Let's do a weekly visit here
with Willie Colon.
I'm excited.
I'm excited to talk some ball with you.
Part of the pre and post for the Jets.
He has some other responsibilities
that we'll get to as well
with Fox and SiriusXM.
Okay, let's start with your Jets
because I just thought
that was a really impressive win.
Once again, it's this defense.
I think Zach Wilson finally had kind of a passable game where, you know,
I think sometimes when they're competitive, it's like, hey, he's playing better.
I'm like, I don't know if he's playing better.
I think it's the defense, and then we give the quarterback credit here.
But what are you seeing with this group that's keeping them in this season
when it didn't feel that way when Rodgers went down?
You know, I was nervous because when you don't play with DJ Reed
or Sauce Gardner, it's like, well, who do we have, right?
And then they pretty much had a practice squad guy step up
by the name of Craig Jones.
And I was like, who?
We're about to get lit up, you know, by Devontae Parker and A.J. Brown.
But I give a lot of credit to Robert Solomon for a guy,
and I've gotten to know him a little bit.
At one point during his tenure, especially getting to know him as of recently, I felt like maybe he was too nice for the job.
Maybe a guy who he's somebody who just no matter what happens to this ball club or who it happens to, he always preaches some form of positivity.
And I was like, man, I think the
act is starting to get old. But then when you see him have a significant win against the Eagles,
you're like, this team needs that. This team constantly needs the affirmation, the sense of
positivity at all times, because you forget how young this group really is.
And I'm sitting down saying to myself, well, maybe he obviously knows what we don't know.
And I think we caught a glimpse of it in the hard knocks where at the presser, he's nice and he's clean and he gives you the rah-rah stuff.
And at the same time, when you go behind the curtain, he's dropping F-bombs and he's keeping
100 with his team.
And he's been consistent thus far.
I like Robert Saleh a lot.
I really do.
I think the only thing I get worried about,
and we talked a little bit behind the curtain,
is that he's sold us so hard on Zach Wilson that, listen,
he's doing these things in practice.
We know he can be the guy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then you see Sunday, he goes one for four in the red zone,
and one touchdown, they score.
The Eagles pretty much let up so the offense can get back on the field to score.
And so I'm really confused at how long we're going to kind of keep this gimmick up
that Zach Wilson is going to be the future, that he's going to be fine until Aaron gets back.
Because the defense is obviously right where it needs to be.
The defense is stellar.
They're fast.
They're young.
They make plays. You talk about C.J. is stellar. They're fast. They're young. They make plays. I also saw that.
You talk about C.J. Mosley forcing a fumble.
You talk about Quentin Williams getting the ball.
Quincy Williams, Quentin Williams'
brothers is balling out at a high level as well.
So they have pieces, and they have guys that can do it.
And the defense is starting to emerge and have that
swagger about them. I just think when
it comes down, when the rubber hits the road,
it's going to come down to
Zach Wilson, man. It's going to come down to Zach Wilson, man.
It's going to come down to Zach Wilson.
Can he make the plays?
Can he win the game with his arm?
And as of right now, I don't think that question can be answered.
Yeah, I mean, the other version of this story, you're like,
okay, the Jets went 2-for-11 on third down,
and Zach Wilson at QBR in the 30s again,
and it wasn't like passables being nice, but when you're plus four in turnovers,
when the Eagles give it to you four times and you don't turn it over once, like, and it's still a one score game.
That's it's hard to lose by one score when you're minus four and turnovers.
But he went three of 12 against the Broncos.
Right.
So as much as we want to sit here and say like, he's emerged, I'm like, I don't know.
We can't get in the red zone.
Right.
Like a part of being a quarterback is, you know, put together efficient drives and score the football like that's that's called good offense and i don't hate the kid i
just don't think he's just a good quarterback and then like we've been sold this bill of goods like
no he's good right it's like it's almost like all right dude now you're right you're right you're
right he's had one good game the kansas city game's the only game that you can look back on
and say like okay but even then then there was two red zone throws
that even Collinsworth was willing to say, like,
yeah, Rodgers isn't going to miss those.
And granted, we're comparing Aaron Rodgers.
But as the defense keeps them in this, Willie,
he just gets propped up by it.
And again, two for 11 on third down tells me pretty much what I need to know.
Yeah, but it's like that old cliche, right?
Like you talk about, like, is he helping the team get along or is the team getting along and he's there for
the ride you know i mean there's two different ways of looking at it and obviously right now
the team is getting better and he's there for the ride and for me when the trade deadline comes up
in october 30 on october 31st and robert we had robert solo on my show on the craig carter show
and we interviewed him. And he's
like, listen, Zach's our guy, and we're not going
out and get another quarterback. And I
really, and I cringe because I'm just like,
your defense has arrived, right?
They have arrived against one of the most prolific
offenses in the football right now in the Philadelphia Eagles
who's putting up damn near 27
points a game. How do you not
consciously, if you told the team,
if you told the Jets
fans this year, right, that this is going to be our year. Now we expected that to be the year
with Aaron Rodgers. He's out fine, but here you are three and three. God himself. I mean, any,
I mean, I didn't expect this team to be three and three, right? Maybe with Rodgers,
especially without Rodgers, I didn't see them being three, but you have landed at three and
three. How do you not make a play on somebody like a Kirk Cousins?
How do you not make a play on somebody who can just generate enough offense?
Because you know your defense can win you games.
That's proven.
But how do you not get somebody that say, hey, even if it's Aaron Rodgers,
excuse me, and Kirk Cousins, how do you not at least treat him
as a half-a-year rental and at least get us there?
Because we just haven't been to the playoffs in 13 years.
So I'm saying, man, you're finally in a sweet spot.
You survived the storm.
They're going into this bye week.
They got the Giants, Raiders, Chargers, all winnable games, right?
I mean, you are possibly sitting in a really good position and playing a meaningful game in December and going into January.
How do you not make a play for a confident quarterback?
Because I think we know who Zach is.
We can't make him up to be anybody else than who he is right now.
I think we know who he is.
And I don't think he's a bad person.
I don't think that's an indictment on his character.
You know what I mean?
Sometimes you talk about sports.
You're like, oh, if he sucks as a quarterback, he must be a bad person.
I don't think that's the case.
I think the kid is just not built for the show.
I don't think he has it right. And I think it hurts the team because the team is
ready. You have enough pieces in play to be a legit and competent outfit. The one thing that's
holding them back is the quarterback position. 75% of the offense goes through the quarterback.
So it's just like, at one point, how can you sell that to the team?
Okay. But I mean, what is Salah supposed to say to you? Yeah, we're actually
kicking the tires on a few guys. Like you have to say whatever you can until you actually get
some sort of, like, he's not going to say it publicly. Like, yeah, we were open to improving
that spot because he may be married to this guy for the rest of the year. And I don't love the
kid gloves all the time either, but I just don't think the coach is going to say what you want him
to say publicly. No, I get that. And I understand that's not Robert Sala's MO or how he rose, period.
But I try to put on the player's hat.
Being a guy who was, when I landed to the Jets and I was older in my career,
I know I had, you know, and this, my reality was different
because I had Geno Smith at quarterback.
And, you know, this was an organization really trying to pick themselves up
after losing to the Pittsburgh Seahawks in 2010 for the AFC Championship.
And they just couldn't recover because so many people had significant pieces
that left the locker room.
So my situation is way different from what the Jets look like now.
My point is if I was in this locker room right now as a New York Jet,
as an older guy, you don't have many opportunities to hit the pinata, right?
Like this feels like if they get a competent quarterback, an efficient one, at least not
a world beater.
There's a guy who like, I'm not even at, cause I'm not even asking for you to bring in shit.
I don't know who else, but I'm saying like, give us somebody who can win us games.
Who's better on third down, who can extend drives because you're asking what you're saying
right now.
In my eyes, you're asking Zach Wilson to be Trent Dilfer, right? And I don't think we get Trent Dilfer enough credit, but it feels, you're asking Zach Wilson to beat Trent Dilfer, right?
And I don't think we give Trent Dilfer enough credit,
but it feels like we're asking Zach Wilson to beat Trent Dilfer.
Just don't turn over the ball.
Just do enough, and the defense can get out the building.
We can win.
Asking your defense to get four turnovers a game is extremely hard, right?
Yeah, right.
That's not realistic football, especially when you go against good teams,
like they take care of the ball as well.
So I'm just, I don't know.
I just felt like we should still make a play
and, you know, just give us somebody
who's like a shot in the arm
where we can take off and say,
all right, the Jets are coming.
What is Cleveland doing on defense to put together?
I said at the beginning of the week,
like they're allowing 200 yards per game,
which is stuff we have not seen in 50
years. So I don't know if that's necessarily going to hold up, but whatever they're doing,
it's working. What are you seeing? Bottom line is it starts with Jim Schwartz,
man, defensive coordinator. He's been a monster at the coordinator position for a while. You talk
about a guy versus Kyle Shanahan, he's seven and1 as a coach or a defensive coordinator. He owns Kyle Shanahan, and he proved it Sunday against the Niners.
And I think what we've seen the Browns do thus far is they play a physical brand
of football that's up to par of how we received the AFC North.
You're talking about Baltimore is now second in total defense.
You're talking about the Steelers pretty much, if it wasn't for their defense,
they may be a winless team, right?
So I think right now when you talk about Miles Garrett,
even I thought one of the best acquisitions they got in the offseason
was Dalvin Thomason.
Like he tore up the Niners' interior line this Sunday.
I think what they're doing, they're playing big boy football
in crucial moments.
What's scary about that defense, man, it seems like they can't get better
because they're fast.
They can play zone.
They can clamp the backside and play man.
They can do mixed things in the coverage.
They can blitz you.
And then they can just leave Miles Garrett 1-1
and beat the hell out of you, just be that sledgehammer.
So they can do a multitude of things.
But I think a lot of credit goes to Jim Schwartz, man.
I think his ability to just dial up blitzes at times,
let that front rush, and do things that really just
cause you to play physical football, and they get after it. If you look at some of the man-zone
ratios, I know Schwartz is always going to lean on the heavier side of man defense. It's something
they did week one, and you thought, okay, wait, is that against Cincinnati? Is it a burrow calf
strain? The weather played a part in that as well. But I thought there was some really interesting data after that game about like they were going to have the corners that were going to stand up on an island man to man against those receivers, which is usually not what you would want to do to your secondary against Chase.
And of course, T. Higgins.
And, you know, look, I mean, it's a deep team at that position.
So then you're like, oh, wow.
OK, so Schwartz is playing man all the time.
And then, of course, Debo goes out.
McCaffrey goes out.
I think there was an even more intense increase on man stuff defensively.
Then it can kind of lead into like, all right, well, why don't more teams try to do this stuff?
And it reminds me of when your guy Rex was in New York in the beginning.
He was just blitzing the shit out of everybody.
And you're like, wait, does this work?
Does this actually work all the time? If you're like, Hey, we're going to blitz
you all the time. That's just what we're going to do. And then you're going to have to survive
that. We may get burned every now and then, but over the course of a game, 70, 80 snaps,
like we're going to get you, we're going to force turnovers, but there's, there's just no
like massive tilt one way that becomes the way, unless your personnel is that good.
And maybe Cleveland's personnel actually is that good because I do really love their corners too on top of the front.
So what is it like kind of when you feel like,
hey, there's this coordinator and this is what he wants to do.
Like Spagnuolo, we always know on third down,
like, oh, it's really predictable.
Like there's just coordinators that have been around long enough
and you can hear the announcers just kind of say like,
hey, this is third and seven, they default to man,
or hey, it's always a corner here or whatever. And yet like, it can't really be that simple. It can't
be as simple as like, I'm Jim Schwartz and I just play man. And now it's going to work. And now
we're going to have a historic defense or he would have never lost a job in the first place.
So what happens is that journey of like tendencies plays out.
You know, for me, it's, it's it first of all it can't be that simple
being at pittsburgh i mean dick laboe sent the house it seemed like every play right like did
between cover one or zone blitzes or whatever like pressure at the end of the day just wears
you out from a mentality standpoint and it's a tendency breaker right when you constantly have
to be account for somebody coming off the edge down the middle you're constantly turning your
line you're putting your back.
You're blocking back on bigger guys that they can block or not block.
You know, it's just things that happen.
And if you consistently have to deal with that as an offense,
your quarterback's always thinking, you're always looking,
and you're always saying, like, damn, man, when do they let up?
And having – Right, but can I just – can I interrupt before you give me the rest of the answer?
So, like, how specific does your backside talent have to be though like i mean is it is it as simple as
the great safeties pittsburgh has always had is it is it is it always about the corners you know
like it's funny whenever we see a jersey being held and people be like why did he do that it's
like can you imagine that all the other times it never gets called oh my god that's why he does
that so you know i think sometimes there are corners that are just going to play. It was like,
I'm going to be physical. They're not going to call at all. So we can send pressure and we are
going to hold up versus other teams that are always freaked out about having a pass interference
call. So anyway, I don't know how much it's specific to LeBeau or it's like, Hey, I can
live a certain way because Pittsburgh has just for a long time done a really good jobs with certain
positions.
Yeah, I mean, they just live and die by the sword.
And Blitz is one of their swords.
And I think we were fortunate enough to have a guy like Ryan Clark,
who was kind of the center field guy who allowed Troy to be Troy, right?
Like sometimes Troy didn't have a necessary position.
They were just like, whatever Troy decides to do, that's what Troy is going to do. And we just trusted his mindset and his skill set to make a play or at least be in the
right place at the right time. On top of that,
you know, it's a different league. You know, when I
play, like, you can be a little more handsy. You can do a little
more things you simply can't do right now.
But overall, when, like,
even when I used to go against Baltimore, like,
Baltimore, from a
blitzing standpoint,
man, one of the things I
used to hate, and I talked about because I work with Bart Scott, I hate that. They used to have a blitz, standpoint, man, one of the things I used to hate,
and I talked about it because I work with Bart Scott. They used to have a blitz, man,
where they usually have a linebacker
or somebody over your head, and they would have another guy
or two outside of you. And they would literally grab
as they rushed, they would literally grab the tackle,
right? Pause you for two seconds
and then let you go. And by the time you turned
your head, it was somebody screaming
off the edge like a goddamn eagle, and that was your
ass, right? And so a lot of that has to do with the personnel and ability to communicate.
Like I was watching a viral clip of Ray Lewis talking to Rayquan Smith, the middle linebacker for the Ravens.
And he said something that kind of resonated me, especially during my time as a Steeler.
When you're on the battlefield, man, and you're playing with somebody, especially somebody that's younger, you expect them to know what they should know.
But there's another thing when you have a guy that's old enough to coach you
through it and talk you through it while the play is going on.
And he simply said in the clip, I think he was talking about being able
to communicate and saying, hey, stay backside.
I got this.
See things that normal coaches don't see or tendencies, man.
And good defense, they communicate little things like that.
And so what you're seeing with the Browns overall,
you're starting to see them communicate, especially on the back end.
And now that you have a Myles Garrett, you can just let him be the dog
and let him go.
You're starting to see a defense that's really starting to really figure it out,
right, because Brock Purdy, for all accounts, I love him.
Like, you know, I'm a Brock Purdy guy.
I know he's 6'1".
I always stayed, and everybody thinks he's just like –
he kind of has this Jeremy Lin effect, like eventually he's going to wear off.
We're never going to talk about him again.
I don't think so.
I think the kid is legit.
What I do say about the Browns and what they do defensively, man,
they just – they're not afraid to play the man.
They have enough – they have the four that can get after you.
And on top of that, Miles Garrett, I think,
is probably one of the most unblockable guys
in all of football.
Like, seriously,
you can't block him.
And that's what was so disheartening
about him,
Trent Williams getting hurt
because I thought
if there was one guy
that we could hopefully see
neutralize him,
it was going to be Trent Williams.
And then obviously
he didn't get hurt
because I watched
Michael Parsons get played,
play Trent Williams.
Trent Williams put him
in the baby seat.
And then, shit,
George Kittle was blocking him
one-on-one.
Then Yusek was blocking him.
So I was like, Parsons,
what the hell is going on?
This shouldn't be happening
to you of all people.
But nevertheless, man,
I think the Browns
are just a legit defense
ran by a really,
really competent coach
who really understands
hard-nosed football.
Okay, so that sounds like
a definitive Garrett
over Micah Parsons
position from you.
I'm definitely pro-Garrett
over Micah Parsons,
without a doubt. I have no problem with saying that. I'm definitely pro-Garrett over Micah Parsons, without a doubt.
I have no problem saying that.
I'm writing that one down.
Take a closer look.

Let's take a look at Sunday night.
So we've got Miami and Philadelphia, one of the biggest games,
maybe the biggest game right now of the regular season.
So the line as of taping here, Philadelphia is laying 2.5 at home.
The total on this one is 51.5.
I feel a little bit
like my SC Utah play here where it's like, okay, a lot of turnovers, disappointing loss, getting
home and getting right here. So I'd probably rather lay the two and a half against Miami
at Philly getting right after what was a disappointing loss against the Jets.
But I think some of the same game parlay stuff in here, I don't always love the four different
guys have to score a touchdown,
even if the payout, although this might be the game to do it, or maybe you pick two of the three
anytime touchdowns. There was also a really, really out there one for me where the correct
score, which always seems to be like, maybe you throw five on it, a little fiver on it.
If you could go 2720 Philadelphia, correct score, it's plus 9,500.
That's a lot of faith in your future telling. Let's look at one. Let's try to find one here.
Let's go, say Dolphins get something going. There's a bit of adjustment. How about Miami
over 12 and a half? So you could try to mid a little bit,
lay the two and a half of the Eagles, figure out a way to win in a close game at home.
But knowing that Miami, the way they get it rolling early, they're good for at least two
touchdowns, right? Or two field goals and a touchdown. And that's kind of where I came up
with the 20. I'm trying to guess the correct score just because the payout's so insane when
you can hit those. So you've got a couple little pieces there, but I like Philly for the game overall,
hedging it a bit, though, over 12.5 first half for Miami's points.

this also happens a lot, right?
You're going, okay, I need to pick out a head coach here at some point
and be like, you know who's incredible?
It's Jim Schwartz as a defensive coordinator.
Look, Detroit, probably not going to give a ton of coaches the best chance
at ever making it happen.
He ends up getting through five seasons there.
He was 29-51.
Vic Fangio, after all the different stuff that Denver tried,
they were like, you know what, let's just bring in a guy
who everybody talks about being one of the best defensive coordinators.
Hell, I think Denver fans would take 19 and 30 right now over three years.
Oh, hell yeah.
It doesn't sound like it's a lot of fun.
There's plenty of offensive quarters.
I always wonder, what did Brian Billick do to people?
He never got another shot.
And so what do you notice?
I think it was the hair.
He was jealous of his hair.
I remember part of the interruption used to just destroy his personality, like all the time.
And I'm talking like two decades ago.
So whatever.
Look, I could go, I could go down the list of failed coordinators, but
there's also a long list of former head coaches that are also failed head coaches, the same
way college head coaches, you know, we can label it different ways.
We're going to treat the results a little bit differently.
Like, Oh, it was never really going to work.
What do you notice about the coordinator that figures out how to be a head coach versus
the one that doesn't?
Um, you know, for me, I had Todd Bowles, right?
So he's the only one I can lean on.
One thing about Todd, what I thought his time as a Jet man, as a Jets head coach,
he was just somebody who I felt like won from a, he was really loyal to the locker room.
He was really loyal to a lot of guys.
And I don't think that hurt him.
I think what hurt him was, you know, the team at some point, from the defensive side of the ball, just became stagnant, man.
We had a lot of young guys who were just stubborn.
And we had a lot of guys who were impact guys who just flat out gave up, you know,
and then guys who got paid a lot of money to be the face of the franchise.
And it turned out those guys were frauds.
And I always felt bad for him because I think he helped.
I think he tried to help the Jets as much as he could.
And then we just weren't good, and we weren't good in the right places.
And so now I'm happy to see what he's doing down in Tampa,
especially with Baker Mayfield.
And I'm happy that it's under his tutelage.
I'm happy it's underneath his reign.
But Todd Bowles, for me, is the guy who I can speak to the most,
obviously outside of Rex,
because Rex was different.
Rex had a lot of guys
who were in the middle of their careers
who still had a lot of gas in them.
He had a young quarterback,
Mark Sanchez,
who was kind of like this wild cowboy.
And then it's just that the timing was right.
I think Todd has been through the bottom
and climbed himself way back up
being the head coach
of the Buccaneers right now. I'm proud of him.
I got a lot of respect for him, especially with Baker
pretty much turning off the social
media, being a guy's
guy in the locker room. At one point,
the whole thing about Baker was he had more
commercials than touchdowns.
Now he's actually playing football.
He looks good doing it in a Bucs uniform,
so I'm happy with him. I'm glad you said
that about Todd Bowles because during those Jets years
where, you know, the first year you actually put together a really nice season,
I didn't think the team was great by any means.
And then it got worse and worse.
I just always felt like every time he had to speak to the media,
it felt so sincere.
Yeah, and it was in a brutal spot.
I was like, I can't believe how well this guy handles himself
when I don't know how much of this is his fault.
And I don't know him.
Just, you know, of all the years of paying attention to this stuff,
there was always something with Todd Bowles.
So to hear you say that actually confirms everything I sort of felt.
Well, he would never throw anybody underneath the bus.
Not like Brian Dayball.
Like Brian Dayball.
So you're upset with what Dayball did to Tyrod Taylor at halftime?
I was more upset with what Brian Dayball did to Daniel Jones the game before.
Remember when it was at Miscue?
He said, I called running.
It was a pass.
And they asked him, like, what happened on that play?
And he was just like, I called.
He said, I called pass or something along the lines.
He's like, well, what happened?
He was like, that was Daniel's fault.
Something along those lines.
I'm paraphrasing.
But he pretty much passed the blame.
Like, he was saying, like, I called one thing and it didn't happen. It was him. that was Daniel's fault. Something along those lines, I'm paraphrasing. But he pretty much passed the blame. Like, he was saying, like,
I called one thing and it didn't happen.
It was him. He said he heard it wrong, something like that.
And I was just like,
ugh. And it felt like a coach that's
starting to feel the pressure, right? There's a coach
who, you know, you talk about a team. First of all,
the Giants didn't have, they didn't have a hard schedule
last year. They was able to overcome
a lot. They got into the playoff. They had the one playoff
win. They paid Daniel Jones to be, like, a big-time quarterback. He were able to overcome a lot. They got into the playoff. They had the one playoff win. They paid Daniel Jones to be
a big-time quarterback. He has yet to deliver
fine. They'll figure it out. I'm not
worried about that. But I was shocked because
I loved Brian Dayball. I loved
him as an office coordinator with the Bills.
And I
loved him thus far as a Giant because
I felt like he kind of changed the culture. He was kind of hard
on guys. He got after guys, needed guys,
and mature. He kind of pressed the button on a lot of things.
And I thought the Giants just looked like, you know, from the outside,
they looked like a more mature team.
But now, you know, lately, him calling out, you know,
Dave Jones the game before, and even this weekend on the sideline,
like it reminds me of, you know,
the viral clips of seeing Nick Saman in his time as LSU when he's just
ripping dudes' heads off as they're walking back to the sideline.
And I was just like, Tyrod Taylor's been in this league a long time.
He doesn't deserve a little grace.
You know what I mean?
This isn't your first or second-year quarterback who's just learning the NFL.
Tyrod Taylor has been around the league for a while.
Like, yeah, he may have messed up, and I understand you can't mess up in opposition
and you left some points to get away from you.
But I just felt like that was just a little too much, man.
And even at the end of the game, like his exchange with Sean McDormand was just like,
yeah, bro, you're a pisser.
You know, fuck off.
You know, we should have won that one.
If you called that holding call of Darren Waller, we're walking out of here with a W.
But that didn't happen.
And so I don't know.
Brian Dayball seems like he's starting to feel the
heat um and it seems like he at times you hear him i feel like throw his guys underneath the bus
especially his quarterback i always remind you know myself or you know when we used to talk and
it was more of a talk show format like the nfl is not the normal workplace so when you start
applying like normal weight workplace conduct and trying to think like it NFL is not the normal workplace. So when you start applying like normal weight
workplace conduct and trying to think like, it's just not going to happen. Like when guys get mad
at each other on the sideline, like it's just, this is different, man. Guys are putting their
bodies on the line. Everybody's competitive. This is a hundred really tough people. It's going to
play out differently because of what we're talking about and what we're looking at it. So it never, it never really bothers me. Um, it just doesn't, it doesn't. But again,
I've, I've never had it happen to me either. And you're right. Like Tyrod's played a long time.
I couldn't help, but think like, I wasn't entirely shocked that Tyrod was like, I'm going to change
it here. And that's, I think the frustration where it was like, Hey, is part of your holdup that you are,
are capable of making this mistake that doesn't, you know, like,
why would you make this decision?
Why would you do this? And you're watching it all play out.
Maybe he still thought he could get it spiked in time.
I don't know. I don't know what he was thinking. Yeah. Right.
At 13, 14 seconds. But here, here's what I actually do want to ask.
Like, have you ever gotten lit up on the sideline?
Oh, me?
Hell yeah.
How bad?
What's the best one?
Man, that's a good question.
So one of my favorite stories is my rookie year.
We're playing Arizona in Arizona.
This is when they just, they were so proud of this goddamn Bermuda grass, right?
It was like, oh, we got Bermuda grass.
We're the best damn team.
You know, oh, shit, look at our grass, right?
And it's my rookie year preseason, by the way,
so they just opened in the building.
And we had, so on the backside of our play,
first of all, our center was Marvin Phillip.
He was Aaron Rodgers' center at Cal.
So Marv got drafted in the sixth.
I got drafted in the fourth round.
We were paired together, right?
So we're going against the Cardinals.
And on the backside of our power play, we had a cat call.
Now, pretty much a cat call is the center's going to block back.
I'm going to step, hit the three technique,
and swivel back for the outside linebacker, DM, coming at me, right?
Fine.
Where the play goes, and mind you, we got Deuce Daly at
running back, right? I forgot
who else was at center. I forgot who was at center.
It may have been Charlie Batch. But fast
forward. I make the cat call.
I'm like, cat, cat, cat.
I can hear Marv say,
gotcha, right?
Cat, cat, cat. Ball snaps.
I step down, slam hinge, and
I turn back.
Well, Marv never comes back.
Marv never comes back for the three technique.
The three technique shoots Duke, smashes Deuce Staley.
Mind you, Deuce is old at this point.
Like, Deuce is an old head.
Like, he's like, dude, you know I'm old when I'm out here with you young fucks. Like, he could tell that the right was on the wall.
He was too old to be out there with us, right?
We did not do him any service if he was trying to make the team, right?
So it was just bad.
I felt bad for Deuce, right?
Because we were all, you know, new in the NFL, trying to figure it out,
trying to make a team with the Steelers that had just came over Super Bowl.
He was like, you know, I thought I earned my stripes.
I'm out here with, like, a guy, a kid from Hofstra, and, you know,
three other dudes who I don't even know where they went to school.
So I felt bad for Deuce.
Fast forward.
So, yeah, so the three techniques, screams Deuce, smashes Deuce.
Blah!
All right?
Three and out.
Run to the sideline.
And Russ Grimm was our offensive line coach, one of the original Hawks.
And so I'm sitting on the sideline, and he's going through the plays,
and he goes, Willie, what the fuck?
Have we not worked on this? Have we not?
He goes, what is
cat? He goes, what is cat?
I was like, I
made a call, coach. I stepped down, hit the
two techniques, swiveled back, stopped anything
coming off the edge. Marv comes back
out the gate. He goes, all right.
If you fucking know it, how come you don't do it?
As he's talking to me, I'm looking at Marv and I'm like, at any point you want to step in to let this man know that I made the cat call on the backside. And Marv ducks his head. He pulls
his head down into his chest. He looks the other way. And I said, son of a bitch. I was like,
I was like, you're my roommate.
Like me and this dude have partied together. He put it, you know, cause he's from the islands.
He, he, he, you know, he didn't like cold weather. So he like put his mattress on a
terrace so he can have 24 hour AC. Right. Like we were, we was, we was, we was homies.
Like this is my brother. Like we had, we were coming up together with two pups and a kennel.
So I'm like, coach, I made the cat call. And I started to be
like, but I was like,
you know, you don't never throw your homie out. You got
to jump on a grenade. So I was like, bet.
Get back on the field.
And I look out. I'm staring at him. I'm like,
so you're not going to say nothing? And he
was just like, he's like, what are you talking about?
So he played the whole, he had amnesia.
Fast forward, I played like shit
because I'm frustrated.
I got Russ mad at me.
My man doesn't zone me out.
You know what I mean?
I never forget sitting in my locker.
Kevin Colbert comes over.
He goes, you had six mental errors.
If that happens again, you will no longer be wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform.
Let's play better next week.
And walks away.
I am...
Bro, I'm...
I almost threw up. I had
so much anxiety because I
knew from that one play... First of all, that's
not all I'm over. I got to get my head out of my ass.
That's like one play out of
20-something we played, so I got to be better.
But it was just that one instance where
the first time, I never
wanted to let Russ down because Russ was everything to me.
Right. And how, you know, they had just won a Super Bowl. I had Alan Fanica, Jeff Harden, Kendall Simmons, all these guys, you know, and Russ was kind of like, you know, the general patent.
So like you didn't want to let the general down. So that was the first time. That was the only time he dug into me.
That was the first time he dug into me on the sideline. And I could just remember this look he had. Because Russ was just like big square Lego ass head, big shoulders.
And, you know, he had this kind of bravado about him.
And I just remember him digging into me for like two minutes.
And while I'm getting this lash, I'm just waiting for my man to be like,
Coach, I'm sorry.
I heard the cat call.
You know, I just didn't do it.
Da-da-da-da-da.
Never happened.
And I spiraled the whole game.
Like just spiraled out of control and that was
and that's probably the one the worst ones the worst ones i've dealt with so there's been there
was way worse but that was hey look yeah you're one of the best storytellers ever we may we may
just have to make its own piece and by the way no one has ever been more proud of their grass
than arizona proud super Super proud. It was unbelievable.
Right?
I mean, I think I watched a documentary on it.
Okay, final thought here.
Yeah.
Miami, Philly.
Yes.
Who you got?
I'm going to be honest, man.
I like Tua.
I know he's on pace of breaking the passing record.
I know Tariq Hill's due to break a record.
I just don't trust the Miami Dolphins' defense.
They can't hold up.
People want to make a big deal about Jalen Hurts for turnover, so to speak. record. I just don't trust the Miami Dolphins' defense. They can't hold up. People
want to make a big deal about Jalen Hurts
for turnover, so to speak.
One was C.J. Mosley punching the ball out.
That wasn't on him. The second one was
Dallas Goddard hit off his knee
into Quentin Williams' hand. That wasn't on him.
The one bad pick he did throw
was late in the game when Tony Adams picked it off for the Jets.
That wasn't like he was being bracketed.
The next one, he was just taking a shot he had to.
It was picked off by Jordan Whitehead.
I don't think there's a cause for concern with Philly, right?
Like we just watched the Dallas.
We asked the Cowboys to get a whooping.
I don't think it was a whooping by the Eagles, but they just didn't.
What bothered me about the Eagles is you come in this game being a run team,
you don't run the ball at all.
It's almost like they heard Salt's going and D.J. Reid was out the game.
We're going to air it out.
It didn't happen.
The Jets held up on the back end.
I think Jalen Hurts is going to be fine.
I think once they lost Lane Johnson,
you could tell there was a little steam taken out of them.
But nevertheless, man, I think this Eagles defense –
by the way, who let Brees Hall score, right?
They let him score.
They didn't give up a score.
They let him score.
And if they don't let him score, they pitch a shutout,
like the Eagles win that game.
And also by the Dolphins, when they went against a really good defense
of the Buffalo Bills, they only dropped 28 points,
and they lost that game to Josh Allen.
So, for me, I know what the Dolphins can do.
I just don't know what they look like defensively,
if they can hold up against an outfit like the Eagles.
I think the Eagles are more complete on both sides of the ball.
And I just got Jalen Hurts, man.
I got Jalen Hurts in that, that, that office coming alive and that defense doing what they do.
And that's, that's getting after the ball. See ball, get ball. The let them score thing is always like, I feel like it gets thrown out too often. Did you not think they let them score? No,
they definitely, no, no, no. They definitely let them score. There's no debate on that. So just
we're on the same page as we finish up here, but I feel like it gets thrown
out a little too much now where it's like, well, Hey, here's where you're at in game time situation.
If they kick the field goal, you're going to lose. There's not going to be any time left.
There's some games that I'll watch and be like, I might trust my defense and not trust the other
quarterback so much that something stupid could happen that that might be the better play to just try to still play defense and if there's a quarterback that i'd be
like you know again they let them score at it's like a minute 46 yeah 146 it's first and goal
to philly eight so if they hadn't right so at that point it was a two-point conversion because
they're thinking like look if we let them bleed the clock out here
and kick the field goal, it's 15-14 and we're not going to get the ball back.
Correct.
That one makes way more sense.
It's just something I notice every Saturday and Sunday at times
where it's like, hey, let them score.
And I'll be like, wait.
How about you just hold up?
There's certain scores.
Yeah.
Right.
But like I feel like the football community has bailed on like
hey that other guy screws up a lot okay like what if we get a sack you know what if we you know what
if they're kicking right and i i would have to go back and look at the timeouts at that point
because i think um you know philly knows what they're doing here so i i doubt i would have
yeah i think it would be i'm not gonna i'm not to run through. So you like Philly against Miami.
I didn't want to go through the entire play-by-play
timeout pattern to
everybody listening here. It's just something
that I bring up. So you like Philly this weekend.
Yeah, I like Philly solo because of their defense.
I think their defense is going to hold up.
A lot is brought about. Julio Jones
now being a part of the team.
It seemed like a panic move to me.
I think you still got Devontae Smith, got A.J. Brown.
Put DeAndre Swift where he belongs in the backfield and pound the rock.
And that's one way of neutralizing Tua, keeping him on the sidelines.
I don't think it has to be bigger than that.
Because you're not going to be able to stop him,
but you can neutralize him to some degree.
Yeah, it would be a nice time for some of those Vikings possessions,
those Rams possessions where you're like,
they ran 17 plays for this possession, 18 plays for this possession.
If there's a team in the NFL that's built to do it,
I feel like Swift is just such an incredible addition to a team.
It started off –
You could argue it didn't even –
Yeah, I guess it just started off on a 19-play drive.
You know what I mean?
You can win games like that.
You can definitely do it against the Dolphins defense.
That's easy money.
Yeah, I'm glad you did that in the Hurts' turnovers.
It's just that he has more picks now than he had all of last year,
and I think the bracketed pick was brutal.
You were like, what?
That was his worst one.
That was like, what are you doing?
He's falling back.
Yeah, but again.
You're the best.
That's Willie Colon, pre- and post-Jets on the Craig Carton Show,
Fox Monday through Friday, SiriusXM as well.
Look forward to our next visit, man.
Appreciate you, brother.
The Alliance has been questioned.
Tough stretch.
I saw Defiance Parlay. We could just call it
Defiance Parlay. Just do the opposite.
So you want to
recap? Because I guess the
thing that people are thrilled about overseas
is they're listening to this after the weekend. So they already know the results and then it can
hear our hope. And there you go. So recap your week, everyone. I had the, I had Indiana plus
33 and a half against Michigan. Indiana gets off to a great start. 7-0. The 6.5 Hoosier over was the play you gave it.
I told you you liked it.
All of the other bets that I give out hit.
It's just my best bet never hits.
I'm currently 1-7.
But again, Indiana, they're up 7-0 at the end of the first.
I'm like, all right, is Michigan going to put 40 on them?
And then they did.
They put even more than that, actually.
It was embarrassing.
So, took another L.
Your boys won in seven, is what it is.
Kyle?
I lost last week, again,
by more than a couple points, I think.
I even, do you remember what I did?
I mean, I was jazzed about it at the moment.
Kansas.
You had Kansas, and they were winning late.
Kansas, yes.
Based on the basketball team avoiding heavy sanctions.
Yes, yep.
But I did say, you know, there might be a little karma there because the Oklahoma State dudes had some stuff to say about it.
And then they came in.
Fair.
Fair to say you weren't wrong.
Yeah.
Did say that.
Just the pick was.
Well, don't call it your best bet.
Call it your best effort.
Maybe, you know, basketball.
I had Oregon, so it ended up being a push.
I like Washington.
It was really frustrating.
Yeah.
You like Washington in that. Well, you know, it would have been a push push push feels like a win when you
can't get a hit you know you're just walking up to it bat you're in your softball league right now
going i'm over seven i'm grounded out to the third baseman every single time you know you do step
away from the plate get a little bit more space extend the arms next thing you know you're hitting
into the alleys again all right maybe slap a butt down you know third baseman's playing a little off
maybe not a bun maybe Maybe not a softball.
I'll take anything I can get at this point. I know. You know what?
Wins are wins. So let's get some fucking wins.
Who wants to go first? All right. I went
first last time, so I'm not going first.
Okay, I'll go first. Fuck yeah. Oh no.
Kyle. Kyle's going to go first. Get out of his way.
I asked a different guy this
time, and that's where I'm getting a lot of my juice
this week. I asked a different guy what I should do.
And he said
Tennessee plus eight and a half at Alabama alabama that's gonna get you minus
110 uh just keep it i can ask that close and i like that bet shout out to that guy who gave me
this uh gave me this tip okay shout out to the guy tip all right i'll go give me sc minus six and a
half at home against utah uh i'm going with coming off a bad loss, and it was a bad loss. Caleb Williams, probably his worst game ever. They actually, when you look at the turnover numbers for this game, as we've covered, you turn it over five times and they turn it over zero. Tough to win. Shocked it was only 28 points.
to win. Shocked it was only 28 points. The defensive injury report is worth paying attention to. We're giving this out on Wednesday. I don't know where the line is going to go because there's
been some linebacker issues, some secondary issues, but Branch, their returner and playmaker,
he was basically on full return duty in this game and getting him back is actually a big deal.
So Utah's offense is just not it. If you were going to bet against SC, you'd be like, okay,
they're not going to stop anybody.
I think you have a better chance against what Utah has been
for most of the last few weeks.
I know they had one decent output recently.
But I think getting right, being home,
and the health updates on that defense are going to be important
by the time you want to play this on Saturday.
But I like them coming home,
especially after a Notre Dame embarrassment,
and they're still 4-0 in a conference play.
Like SC, for all the writing them off stuff,
still very alive for even the playoffs still with this,
despite what you think of their defense.
So I think it's getting right back home.
Love that it's under a touchdown.
Wonder where that line's going to move,
and if it's because of betting
or if it's because you get some bad updates
and their lack of depth defensively.
So, you know, the number the number could be even shorter depending on who you like.
But I'm going to see minus six and a half.
I love both of those picks.
That's not a great sign.
I'm going to take I'm going to take Penn State plus four and a half.
I'm going to take the points.
I know they're on the road at Ohio State.
I know the argument is they haven't played anybody.
But I I just like this team.
And I also think Ohio State, they're down a couple guys with injuries. I don't even know if Ohio State. I know the argument is they haven't played anybody, but I just like this team and I also think Ohio State,
they're down a couple guys
with injuries.
I don't even know
if Ohio State's that great.
They've let some teams hang around.
I'll just take the points.
I'll take the four and a half
and, you know,
I'll probably...
Congrats to Ohio State.
I had a Penn State joke in there,
but I'm not even going
to make them anymore
because I still don't think
you like them.
I don't care.
I don't care.
It doesn't hurt my feelings anymore.
It is what it is.
I will say I was very happy.
What about your cousin? Oh, well, that's... I didn't know you were talking about that. It doesn't hurt my feelings anymore. It is what it is. I will say I was very happy. What about your cousin?
Oh, well, that's...
I didn't know you were talking about that.
Yeah, that's not cool.
Right, right.
I just wanted to...
You know, I wanted to like...
What do we do?
Right, exactly, Kyle, right?
Like, he still doesn't like it.
So now we've updated...
Has enough time passed.
You're just wondering.
Yeah, I didn't even...
It just went over my head.
I didn't even think it was a thing anymore.
Yeah, because it hasn't been.
But that's why we checked in
and we found out that we can't do it.
So we're good.
We're good for another year.
The funny thing is, I usually root against Penn State.
No offense to Mike Wargaun who's producing this.
I actually don't like Penn State.
I just think Penn State fans are typically pretty annoying.
Maybe I'm around them a lot.
So this is kind of like a zag pick for your boy.
I had to sleep in my car at Penn State, so I don't like Penn State either.
I have a lot of follow-ups to that question.
Or that statement was cold, too.
We don't have enough time for right now.
But we promise on next week's Alliance Pick, maybe we'll get into that one.
All right, there you go.
Check out the latest on sportsbook.fanduel.com.
When we first launched Friday Feedback, we expected to do it maybe like once a month.
So I think we're pretty good. I think we're actually going to get two months in two and a half months into its
existence. So the concept is kind of this, just, it's almost a mailbag for the show. That's it.
Just stuff that doesn't necessarily fall under life advice. There's some gray area overlap there.
Sometimes there's some life advice emails that I think work better here. But let's just have some
fun with it, answer these and it's all bonus content. So you can't even get mad at us if it doesn't deliver enough. Okay, here we go. Our guys check it in. I guess
we have the same check-ins for this. Six, five, 200, no gym stats because I have two young kids.
And honestly, I never enjoyed the gym experience as a lanky white guy. Do lanky black guys love
the gym? I don't know why that's never really like, I think I never really have a quarter.
I'm going to ask the lanky black guys at the
gym but if they're there like hey i have a question for you real quick uh all right so
he played high school basketball with former first round pick robert swift oh dude don't tell me
every hey dude i'm telling you straight up robert swift would have been good i used to draft him in
2k all the time just for just for the But anyway. Did you keep him for a career?
Was he awesome?
Yeah, I would do all the training stuff and get him kind of decent,
be in my rotation.
He was just hilarious to look at, too, in the game.
I'm just telling you, there was a few weeks stretched there.
Sonics fans will back me up on this where you're like,
okay, apparently Ainge loved him.
And then I don't want to make any jokes about how bad the rest of it went because that would just be that would be mean be piling on anyway this is uh his
high school teammate so anyway at the end of every show two to three producers are listed Kyle Steve
and then mystery third guy uh that's true there has been a rotation of mystery third guys on the
show I was wondering what the job duties are for the three producers on each podcast I don't have
any interest in starting my own pod or being a producer. I'm just genuinely curious
about the roles and responsibilities of the guy behind the scenes. Yeah, maybe it's like the first
time we've really talked about it. It wasn't some huge show. Well, I guess it is in a way,
but I don't know. Suri, do you want to start this one off? Because you guys have better answers
than I do. I actually don't know the answer to this. Yeah, so it's a good question,
and we haven't really explained it, I guess. So, basically,
you know, Kyle
produced both Bill and
Ryan, and, you know, it's just
a lot of editing, it's a lot of recording time,
it's a lot of stuff. And then once Tate came back, he started
doing one shotting pod again, and
you know, Kyle's bandwidth just, you know, was
sort of shorter. And so, we
were like, alright, we'll keep Kyle on Life Advice.
We'll move some things around.
We'll give some other guys some opportunities to work on a big show like Ryan Rosillo's show.
So basically, Kyle is no longer editing the podcast.
He's still a part of the show.
He's still obviously, you hear him every single show on Life Advice, This and Friday Feedback.
More of a guest.
But yeah, you're a character on the show now.
Maybe we should change the credits around
now that we're talking about it finally.
Can we get an alternate graphic up?
Yeah, Ryan Russo podcast with Kyle.
Compensation review, maybe.
Throw me on as a guest.
There you go.
Okay, yeah.
We'll get you a talent contract, all that stuff.
Is Life Advice popular because of Ryan
or his next review with Cerruti?
Credit him for, you know,
kind of the execution, but the real
backbone of this thing...
I see him in the mirror every morning.
Some would say it is Kyle, you know? Some would say that.
So, basically, you know,
we have some other guys. We have Stefan,
who does a bunch of stuff on the
New York podcast we have with John Dostromsky. He
produces the Monday show, which essentially
is like editing the show, putting it together, doing all the ad stuff.
There's just like a lot of stuff that goes into that. Cliff, who does our Philly podcast,
does it on Wednesdays. Cliff is a good vibes all around guy. He almost jumped in on Wednesday when
we were talking about the Embiid stuff because he was a little mad. And then we got Mike Wargon,
who does a bunch of stuff in our gambling feed, who's with us today. And so basically,
those guys are responsible. We give them our audio after the show.
They mix everything down. They make it sound studio
quality. They put the ad markers in.
They put all the bells and whistles and noise
in. They upload it to Megaphone, which
is the place that we upload the pods
to put them out on Spotify or wherever.
So yeah, that's
basically what it is. So Kyle is basically just
you're just kind of like a guest slash vibes
guy slash character on the show now.
And Steve Fields five Rosillo calls a week, basically, right?
Just get ready for the...
A week?
I don't know how you describe my job.
It's mostly, yeah, just, I don't know,
just constantly texting and calling Ryan
with different stupid things like, you know...
No, no, no.
You are the one guy...
I talk to Cerruti more than anybody in my life.
And, you know, I'd just be sitting around and be like, more than anybody in my life. And, uh,
you know,
I'd just be sitting around and be like,
Hey,
I have this idea.
And then he has to like,
it's not,
I,
I don't breathe for five minutes as I spout the idea out.
And then Suri and I work it out from there.
So,
uh,
the appreciation I have for Suri,
sometimes I don't know.
And again,
it's just different Kyle,
because I worked with Suri on the regular show the whole time,
but the show was very,
the show wouldn't be nearly as good. The amount of people that check in with me about you and their
fascination and just the i think your approval rating is the highest of anyone on the show
so the saruti and i relationship is different because you don't want me calling you twice a day
like eight nine and then 10 a.m on an off day where i'm like wait what about this but what if
i did this and then what about what about this week one i'd probably be into it week one i'd
be like fuck yeah like my come on you come out of the room my my wife be like who's that like
was ryan again again well that's i've told that i've told valentine's day story i think i definitely
told that at espn but i could tell it again for people that don't know this was probably i don't
know 2016 i don't know somewhere around there and uh that was
back when we both lived in west hartford and ryan called me twice while i was out to dinner on
valentine's day like evening with my then girlfriend and the second time i'm like my now wife looks at
the phone is like ryan's called twice just pick up so i pick up and you proceed to tell me something
about you know some orlando magic rumor but yeah by the way it didn't happen didn't happen didn't happen you called twice you
called twice on a non-pickup for that he called twice i didn't i didn't know it was valentine's
day didn't have any idea it was valentine's yeah i was like hey man i gotta go i'm like out to
valentine's dinner with with you know with uh with my girlfriend he was like oh my god he was like i
was i was in downtown like i was wondering why there were so many cars out and i think that makes sense so so yeah so that's uh couldn't even get a table for
one at the bar in any of these restaurants fucking crazy so that's that's what it's like
wouldn't even talk to me the number of holidays like i went to go shop for a car on easter once
and i went what the fuck i'm like so what are these guys just never show up every sunday really
yeah they're closed every sunday what kind of establishment is this yeah yeah i swear to god like sometimes when i
when i hear them explain back to me i'm like i've never thought i was on the spectrum but not knowing
it was valentine's day and not putting it all together because then i remember like i used to
anyway now we're just going to start telling like origin story valentine stuff but yeah look um i
don't think anybody else would want the
relationship that saruti has with me but it's very important that i have at least one guy because the
other thing is i don't want saruti to push back either like i don't want him to push back and
tell me i'm fucking wrong all the time that's why whenever i try to explain saruti as a producer
i'm like just hire him just hire him get him in the room and hire him. And then you can tell
me how right I was after the fact, because it's hard to describe what it is. I think it would be
like a writer having an amazing editor, you know, where that's correct. Yeah. Like the editor can
have all sorts of fucking ideas, but he knows deep down, like I have to figure out a way to
make his ideas better. I can't force my ideas on him. Sometimes he'll be like, Hey, we should do
this. And sometimes I'm like, great idea. Sometimes he'll be like, Hey, we should do this.
And sometimes I'm like, great idea. Or sometimes I ignore it. Um, but that's our language for,
Hey, Ryan didn't vibe with it. And now I'm not offended that he didn't like my idea. So he has
for the producer part of it. So Rudy has, I think the best just combination, like
composure is kind of the wrong word, but his makeup, right? His just, his makeup, his personality for the job, at least for me is perfect.
There might be another on-air person who doesn't like Cerruti because of whatever fucking reason,
like it's a taste thing.
That's why I always think it's kind of funny.
Like whenever you're in this business and people are like, oh, I really like this guy,
but this guy sucks or whatever.
And it's like, yeah, but I mean, maybe, maybe one guy is great.
One guy does suck,
but there's a lot of in between there where it can be a taste thing.
So,
um,
but nobody's,
nobody's got a higher approval rating than Kyle.
So I'm a guest now,
right?
That's what we're going to,
that's what we decided.
Is that the point?
No,
you're a character on the show.
You're a,
you're a,
like a,
what would you call it?
Like a reoccurrence.
You're like a staple of the show.
Yeah.
I guess.
I don't know.
Which one gets paid more?
I'll find out.
I'll ask HR after this.
We'll circle back.
This is a quick one. When Kyle goes off to the frolic room,
what does his wife do?
Works.
Might find out later today.
Works.
Working for Goop from home. That's been,
actually, I was kind of looking forward to, you know, full-time office wife, but she is home
living room wife because I got the office. So that's, that's actually driving me out the door
a little more. I'll take a, take a walk or something. Actually yesterday when I like had
a big stretch after we finished recording the podcast and she was like, oh, I'm in a meeting.
I was like, oh, okay.
I did one of those stretches, which I'm not going to stop doing.
And then she was like, also, we heard you singing in the shower.
And I was like, wow, sounds like you need to get an office.
But I'll be back later.
And I went to the frolic group at like 3 o'clock.
What song?
I don't want to say.
It was actually.
I don't want to say.
Fuck it.
I'll tell you it was uh
it's just just the hook from uh from that creed song oh yes for uh what higher yeah totally
was it that one or was it something no it's that one yeah it's that one okay
well how do you want to just not i wouldn't know i go a little higher and i you know i mess you go
higher than scott strap i go a little higher than that strap Bob Creed is that his name I'm kidding um just to kind of make it my own butt rocks coming back
by the way more more more people are like wait a second like did you see that was it the Rangers
game with the playoff game when the entire stadium was singing Creed was kind of awesome cool yeah
because deep down everybody liked it like all you're doing is
revisiting like it is crazy how that works at the timeline it's like hey this is awesome no it isn't
you're a fucking loser for liking it hey you know it was fun that but we're gonna make you go through
all three phases yeah well it's like it's like nickelback comes on and people are like this is
shitty and then secretly they're like humming singing to themselves in the shower like i'm
not saying i'm a nickelback super fan i don't think they're the fucking worst band of all time
which is what they got you know labeled as so couldn't cut
as a poor man stealing that's all i'm saying what was less funny than like oh hey you like
nickelback oh no you're the guy making the you like nickelback joke like that's lamer than liking
totally totally yeah yeah so full circle all comes from people so if you're famous and you're
listening to this and everybody thinks you suck right now, give it a decade.
Who knows?
Sing in your songs.
It'll come around.
Maybe I should have just used this one next, the timing of this.
But I think it kind of leads to the incomplete answer when we got in a Cerruti love fest followed by the Kyle backbone, you know, pouring the forms of the content here.
We got an email just labeled very simply who the F is Stefan.
So I think, I think we could probably do the rest of the cliff Stefan Mike thing where
they're alternating editors slash producers that have taken over that part from Kyle because
we couldn't have Kyle for all of it.
Right.
Yeah, pretty much.
Yeah.
By the way, I want that to be known.
That decision came from not me. Somebody else said that i'm not doing that anymore well i'm not
taking it because i didn't even fucking know yeah he called me one day and i was like oh my god
ryan's calling me and he's like so what's going on you're not my producer anymore and i was like
ah okay i'm not sure talk to steve uh yeah because now it feels like it's an under, it wasn't, there was no,
I'm not saying it as if there's somebody under the bus,
but I'm also not going to take shit for anybody
thinking for a content standpoint
that I wanted you to not be on the show
because we know that was never true.
And I'm very happy to work with all three of the guys
because I have a relationship with them from the past.
And if Saruti signs off on somebody,
that's good enough for me.
So there you go.
Saruti, you have a look on your face
for you how about that yeah i feel like that's pretty great right stefan also from poughkeepsie
by the way that's right awesome what a great coincidence friday feedback started pretty hot
but and they started doing like who edits what um okay a couple interview ones here
because we got a lot of people on the pedro thing
so let me just instead of reading i don't know maybe i'll read one of these let's see um
bucket list pedro i know you've discussed before what ryan's bucket list of the pod would be
but i don't recall a final list ever being locked down after listening to the pedro pod and ryan's
genuinely heartfelt enthusiasm while interviewing him pedro had to be on the short list of the bucket list,
right?
To be clear,
it was a fantastic interview,
but you could tell that Ryan was gazing through the zoom at Pedro,
like Saruti watching Chalamet's latest movie.
Love the pod.
You guys are the best.
I'm also guessing Gronk was not on the bucket list.
Absolutely not.
Dude,
Gronk,
like that day,
the amount of time I spent prepping for that day was beyond and it's not like hey i
fucking prep because i do that too much already but that was a long prep deal because i knew i
had stewart copeland to start i had pedro and then i had gronk was that the order no and stewart it
was stewart and then gronk and then pedro and then we had to do other stuff too like we obviously do
the open and then we had to do the show right Right. Right. So I had to do all three of those knowing that Stuart Copeland has
been kind of like a mini side bucket list thing. Like I put in for him like over a year ago.
And then the Pedro thing, even though we had had him in studio once at ESPN,
Alison, who is the best booker I've ever worked with, who treats the job like a lifestyle more
than she does a job. I cannot believe how dedicated
she is to this, to making all of our shows better. And I just, I think the world of her.
So she has a big, big role on the success of the show. Cause I think you would admit over the last
couple of years, the guest part of it has been cranked up because it was hard. I mean, I was
booking it on my own there for a while. It was really, really fucking hard to do the show and then make sure you were mapping out guests for three shows every single week. So she asked me for a straight bucket list for a while. And I actually had Stuart Copeland and then Pedro. And the funny thing with the Gronk thing is he landed in the same day. So I was like, I guess we're doing the 617 pod, which again, no one ever goes like, hey, let's get Pedro and Gronk tomorrow. Yeah, cool. Let's do it.
No one ever goes like, hey, let's get Pedro and Gronk tomorrow.
Yeah, cool.
Let's do it.
The amount of time that went into it, and then it just randomly lands on the same day within an hour window of each other.
I was really geared up for the Stuart one because I wanted to get it right.
The Pedro one I've had in my head for a year plus, if not many years.
And I had met him once before.
And so there was a least of that.
And luckily with Gronk, there's been a couple social interactions over the years, more so when I was younger, where I knew I was going into it with a bit of advantage. And I thought Gronk delivered as much as anybody did for that one. But if we had a bucket list, who else? Because Pedro was definitely, I think Allison asked me for three names of the bucket list and Pedro was one of the three. So she's delivered. Most bookers would probably never get, you know, but, uh, she, she's gotten almost everybody.
I mean, I think we said to Caprio, just Chris, she got Chris Paul to come to a live show,
right?
That was pretty big.
That's true.
Chris Paul live show, another bucket list from her.
Uh, I don't know.
I mean, honestly, I don't, I don't think, cause I wouldn't just go like, well get Clooney,
get Hugh Jackman and then get Gosling.
And you know,
maybe then we'll talk about next week.
Right?
Like I wouldn't ever do that to the Booker.
Although some shows would,
uh,
Oh,
there was a guy at ESPN back in the day who was a weekend guy too.
So he wasn't,
he was like filling in on shows and he showed up.
This is great.
This is great.
The day,
the day of,
I forget if it was the ACC tournament
or the actual NCAA tournament,
and Syracuse played like seven hours
after their show was going on.
And he was like,
hey, do you think we can get
Boeheim or Carmelo today?
Boeheim.
And I'm like, dude,
the Syracuse game's like later tonight.
We're not going to get Boeheim today.
And I think he just showed up
and thought, oh, I'm at ESPN. We just have
everybody's number. We can just call them whenever we want.
They're all so happy to do this.
He was a local guy, too.
He understood how it worked.
He was like, dude, we can't get Carmelo Anthony
a couple hours before tip-off of a massive
Syracuse game to come on and do six minutes
with some guy with all the respect
that he's never heard of. Yeah, by the way, maybe Dan Patrick gets it. Maybe Mike and Mike gets it.
And honestly, that might be your list. Cowherd maybe now at Fox, but not Cowherd when this was
happening. Van Pelt, Rosillo, probably a reach that we were going to get him. But I love the
story because I think they were heading to the final four or something.
And Suri was like,
this dude asked and he worked and he worked.
He just thought like the magical powers of ESPN or whatever.
So like,
that's another thing all together in itself of like,
it's great to shoot for the bucket list stuff all the time,
but you've got to be realistic about it.
Like I'd love to have DiCaprio on the idea that DiCaprio is getting on a
fucking zoom link.
Like you got the bad phone or something yeah and give me like the 45 minutes i'd want to just do it all
to break it all down i'd almost be embarrassed if he did do it you know like things are rough
rough stretch for you huh what are you in between scripts here buddy let's say you're really you're
really selling this movie slow look up to the camera being shot above you mesmerizing so i don't know i mean look i'd like
i'd love to have gosling maybe even more than dicaprio um yeah just but i'd want to do the
full scope of it i'd want to do the whole the whole story uh you know place between the pines
or is it beyond the pines fuck yeah i don't remember beyond yeah i think it is beyond you're
a big spade guy right you think you would probably do that anyway i just think like it might not be
your bucket list but it would be like one of the most fun ones you're a big spade guy aren't you
david spade i think david spade telling stories on his podcast is one of the funniest things going on
in audio right now not to sound like some pretentious dick which too late because i said
audio in our space is really it's really dominating space he's absolutely dominating the space like i just feel like he's
uh when when when spade gets going telling a story or the way he fucks with other people
but i don't know i don't know what the interview is yet because there's also another question where
and i'm going to tie this in and you know just go wherever you guys want because there's also another question where and i'm going to tie this in and you know
just go wherever you guys want because there's no plan here but another emailer let me just get to
it and we'll kind of keep this packaged in with the uh the deal here um basically it was like how
let down were you at the end of the stewart copeland interview so um let me see here
fuck where is it uh here here it is so this this will all still play into it as i'm still thinking
of the bucket list people for allison uh i greatly enjoyed the copeland chant uh chat chant is a
different email and it's obvious that he's a thoughtful guy and that he's not really into
the cult of his personality still when you recognize your memories of listening to the police with your dad, I was a puddle of emotion,
but he gave you a rhetorical stiff arm and an auditory shrug. As an interview, what do you do
and how do you feel when you put yourself out there and get so little back?
Yeah, he wasn't super into my police story with my dad. That was pretty evident immediately. I
wasn't entirely shocked because I think his personality is, and I don't even mean it as a bad way, like his personality is such that he's kind of like right in front of you. And he's also doing a bunch of these things. And, you know, for me, if it's something that I have a personal attachment to, I like to tell the person that at some point in my life, this is what I cared about. And I want to know that they're appreciated. Cause like for me, at least when somebody comes up and says like, Hey, I really like what you do.
Like you should never, you should never get tired of hearing from people that enjoy what you fucking
do. And especially when you're somebody like Pedro, you know, who's doing like real shit or
Stewart Copeland, who's in one of the great bands of all time. Like I'm almost like, you know,
I don't know, like cool. We had answered some fucking questions at a decent open last Wednesday.
But I think you've got to get really weird if you can no longer enjoy somebody else appreciating you, even though at that level of celebrity, maybe it just gets, there's no entree into the conversation where you could say like, oh, hey, this is really, really cool in this moment.
Pedro was pumped about it.
could say like, oh, hey, this is really, really cool in this moment. Pedro was pumped about it.
And if you're asking about some of the interviewing stuff, I'll tell you right now,
I have different game plans. I have different go-tos and they don't always work. But when they do work, I feel justified in using the same approaches at different times when they don't
work. So yeah, there's a bit of like, I listened to Jason Bateman on SmartList when he was talking to the guys from Radiohead.
And I knew what he was trying to do because I would have been trying to do it with Tom York and Greenwood as well.
Being like, help me understand your creative process.
Understanding the notes and like, hey, now this spirals into this and now this means this.
Now all of a sudden, you've got a couple of the most amazing albums in the history of music. Like help me through that creative journey. Help me understand it. And essentially
what you get stuck doing, because you're speaking a different language and somebody who's so special
at what they do, you're basically being like, Hey, can you tell me how great it is to be great?
And then it sounds like a fucking awful question. Cause it's really hard to try to get the other
person to like, they know what you're asking, but they're not going to take you for the ride. And all of us could do a better job of asking
this stuff. And when I was listening to Bateman, as much as I love Radiohead, he clearly does.
I was like rooting for him. I'm in the car. I'm like, come on, man. I know what you're trying to
do. I'd be, I'd be asking the same fucking thing, but when it doesn't land, it sounds like you're
just an idiot fawning over the thing that you think is special, but it doesn't mean I'm never going to do it.
It's just up to me to figure out different creative ways of doing it.
And like, look at the end of the Copeland thing, I wasn't, he was like, yeah, man, cool.
Whatever.
And I was like, yeah, whatever.
All right.
Okay.
Got it.
I tried to have a moment with you.
You were like, whatever, dude.
But I wasn't bummed out about it, even though I knew exactly like the emailer did in that
spot. I'm like, he's he doesn't give a shit in his defense, though.
Like, you know, somebody comes up to you and is like, yeah, you know, me and my brother used to
listen to you all growing up through high school, college, blah, blah, blah. Like, you're not going
to be like, oh, my God, man. Like, and just give some heartfelt answer. You're going to be like
the days. Cool, dude. Like, that's awesome. Like not and not even that you don't appreciate that.
It's just like, what else is there to really say? Like, oh, yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome. And not even that you don't appreciate that. It's just like, what else is there to really say? Yeah, that's awesome. That's great.
Okay, perfect segue, because we have this email. Sean checking in here with CerrutiStats510155, NBA comp is Summer League Jared Bayless. That's good.
in LA for Eric Clapton's guitar festival and I had a random Rosillo interaction from which there is now some debate to set the scene. The wife and I had just had lunch and we were walking around
near the beach. I look over and see RR walking across the street into a local shop. As a listener
for a decade, I was debating what to do. I said to my wife something along the lines of 99% sure
that's Rosillo. I'm going to scope it out. Her response was quote, please don't be weird and
creepy.
I step inside the shop and immediately realize I've entered a situation where it's now just two dudes in a flower shop.
That's right.
I do remember this.
And I'm one of them.
Rosilla was talking to the employees.
So I'm trying to follow my wife's advice and not interrupt anything. Still unsure if this is a Ben Affleck in the town type florist.
It is not.
It is not.
I find myself looking at the sunflowers and scent diffusers.
I couldn't help but overhear that I may be witnessing one of Ryan's famous ideas that
we're all just trying to avoid being screwed.
The worker stepped away and Rosilla looked over.
My icebreaker was, quote, are they trying to pull one over on you?
He explained that he did make a purchase previously, but since then there have been much larger
charges and he didn't authorize any of them and is trying to get to the bottom of it.
Yes, I bought a couple of diffusers for the new. And then randomly I had like a thousand dollars charged in my card
in different increments. It all got worked out. It was all returned. There was nothing nefarious
about it. And I was being nice in the beginning of trying to get to the bottom of it because it
wasn't sweet like all of us. So I was like, I'll just show up and ask what is going on.
So our guy asked me that I explained it
to him while the employee is researching this I take the opportunity to thank Ryan and say they've
been a long time listener and then I said SUP and Rosilla helped me get through pharmacy school
when Ryan was going through the ESPN transition I was also dealing with my own career stuff
I told him that I followed his advice to always bet on yourself and it's worked out so far
we talked a little Montana music some football then the employee came back took his information and vowed to sort it out. The two dudes left the flower shop
and I said, thanks again and rejoined my wife. Here's the debate. She cannot believe that I was
not awkward and intrusive. I never want to overstep or cross that line with someone that I don't feel
like I did here. I thought it was a unique situation and a good conversation. I'm a belief
that people like to be told what they do when they're doing a great job and have impact of others.
But if Ryan was with a date
or at the urinal,
I'm out of there.
It's nice to know you have standards.
You got a code.
Any feedback on the disagreement
would be greatly appreciated.
Also curious if the shop
refunded the charges.
Yes, they did.
I'm going to be honest with you.
I thought it was weird.
Oh, wow.
Well, did he buy any flowers? No, he didn't do anything. He just waited to talk to me in the
shop and had no intention of actually shopping at the floor. So to follow me into the shop
while I was dealing with this, I was kind of like, I thought he recognized me in the shop
and he didn't, he recognized me outside, followed me into the shop. And then like,
it was cool. And thanks. Like I didn't leave going that was fucking weird but now if you
want me to settle the debate between your wife and you i think to follow me in there when you had no
business i'd be in there yeah guys i mean would you have rather i mean you wouldn't know this
unless it was a friday feedback would you have rather he like you know fake like the cost of
talking to you was buying like some stationary in there and be like, yeah, I'm gonna need these fucking napkins.
And he'd be like, oh, one rose.
Would you rather he like pay the cost?
It's a great question.
It's a great question.
Does it make sense?
Would you rather he pay the cost?
He was really nice.
And so I don't want to bum him out now.
He was really nice and it was cool and everything. But once I'd left the transaction, I was like, wait, that guy followed me in there because he saw me and had nothing to do with the actual, he was pretending to shop.
So like, and then I saw that he was staring at me.
And obviously in that moment, when I think a place is ripping me off for over a G, I'm probably not in the best mood.
And so I was like, Hey, what's up?
And then he said really nice things that we talked Montana.
It was great. And then we had another thing that we were connecting on and it was, it was up? And then he said really nice things. And we talked Montana. It was great.
And then we had another thing that we were connecting on.
And it was cool.
The conversation was really cool.
Yeah.
But if your wife is like, wait, you followed him into a florist, didn't buy anything, and chatted him up.
Like, I don't think she's totally wrong for wondering.
But it was the conversation was great.
It was great.
It was complimentary.
Thank you so much.
Did you cut it off at the right time, you think?
We walked outside for a bit.
Oh.
Okay.
It's hard to get the right time.
I mean, that almost never happens to me when it's the right time.
There was one time in Summer League where two dudes came up,
and I almost wanted to follow them.
I think I was waiting outside for one of my buddies was going to the bathroom.
I was like, all right, we're going to go hit the sports book or something. And two guys
came up, they said they were a huge fan. I was like, oh fuck yeah, dude. And then I was like,
so where are you guys going? And they were like, well, actually we're going to get out of here.
I was like, oh, you sure you guys don't want to go to the thing? They're like, nah, we're good.
So it's really hard, but it is possible to nail it to where like, damn, that guy thought I was
great. It was good. But the, the, the only thing only thing was yeah like just you followed me into the
store which i once i put it all together i was like oh okay again it wasn't like i spent the
rest of the day being like what's wrong with that guy but you know mirrors as you're driving
i thought i had somebody following me the other day yeah but i could have been watching the born
trilogy again i don't think it's that weird. I don't.
Okay.
Would you have fought?
Would you follow Chalamet into?
No,
no,
but I also don't,
I don't really,
I'm not that interested in like talking to Chalamet,
you know,
I,
and I believe that I believe that I,
I just admire him as a,
who knows if he has anything.
What if it's a guy who has something to say though?
Like,
yeah,
maybe Chalamet doesn't have a bunch going on back there but like what about somebody else
i'm trying to think of who else i would because like you gotta i mean i know you understand this
and i'm just saying like these people feel like they're friends like they listen to you all the
time and so like yeah i'd want to like talk to that person who i who i've spent hours upon hours
listening to probably hundreds of hours listening
to. I don't think it's that strange. I mean, I do feel a little bad for the flower shop to be like,
you just walk in, walk out, and that's it. We kind of got used in this transaction. But
I don't know. If he kind of kept it, if he dragged it on outside, I don't know,
maybe it was a little bit long. But if it was just the interaction, the flower shop,
he said, what's up? He had a nice little short conversation. He just says, thank you and leaves.
I don't have an issue with that. Also, I think
if this was a bigger shop, it was probably pretty
small, right? This was like a grocery store.
You got a little more space
in between you, but it's a confined space.
You felt the presence when you walked in. I wonder how much the shop
like if it's a bookstore, you're like, okay,
whatever. Check a couple titles out.
Sure. You never made a book.
I'm just wondering, Kyle, if you
were at an outside patio bar, maybe some apps, and I can't believe during the threesome email we didn't make the joke about him asking the bartender if they had the trio app special just over and over and over again, even though it wasn't on the menu.
over again even though it wasn't on the menu um if you saw nick hexum from 311 walking into a laundromat and you were like i have to go say hi to him i'm gonna follow him into the laundromat
what would your wife say who's that um also i have a good one that's not nice be nice go ahead
does that really give us the scenario i think think both Kyle and I would appreciate this.
If I saw John Mayer outside of a flower shop
and he walked in, I think I would follow him.
Fuck yeah, dude.
And I think I'd be like,
hey, man, you got me through a lot of shit
for like a lot of money.
And he's probably heard that a thousand times.
But I would just be like, hey, man.
That's the play.
That's the play.
Back to our Creed conversation.
Like, oh, you, oh, John Mayer.
And now you're you just you're
dominating it would have been it would have been way shorter though it would have been like hey man
fuck yeah like if it was 50 i'll just give him the g unit i've been waiting to do it forever
like if i ever see him out and about i'm just gonna hit him with the g unit from the
fucking from my diaphragm but uh and that's it i'm not gonna be like dude forever read your book
loved it i'm just gonna be like i'm just gonna hit him with a g unit yeah and that's it. I'm not going to be like, dude, forever. Read your book. Loved it. I'm just going to be like, I'm just going to hit him with a G unit.
Yeah. And that's it. I don't want to do.
I don't want him to have really have any more thoughts about me
other than that guy likes what I do. And that's it.
Not like, did you yell G
unit on purpose
on in college
college? Yeah, probably not.
I didn't. Yeah, I think so. These guys were
like trying to tell me other other dudes were
better. And I was just like, I think that's like a conversation ender.
Like flip mode squad?
Yeah.
Dip set?
Deluxe.
We spent a long time on that one.
And I don't know.
I just don't want the emailer to feel bad because it was much appreciated.
But on the wife side of the ruling part, I think we have to be fair.
A quick one here.
How did Ryan's fantasy baseball team do?
We listened to two plus hours solo pod of you going through the draft that we never get an update fair question came in second place
so one guy listened all the way huh that's great oh man that's pretty i forgot about that
we'll do it again next year make it even longer can't wait good luck with that one wargon you
know what i want to see i want somebody to show me how that one did if it's the worst performing
but didn't i give it out as a bonus episode too it was a bonus this wasn't your thing and for the
and i wargon if you're listening uh whoever was going to be doing it i didn't listen to one bit
of it i was like okay i'll do this i'm not listening and I was like, okay, I'll do this. I'm not listening. And he was like, no, don't listen. Just put it up. That's amazing. I told Kyle, don't edit any of it. Actually.
That was the thing that I was like, I have to, I have to do it all in one take. There can't be
any edits because I don't want to make anyone who works here have to listen to this. And it was
bonus. That was a huge relief because I would have did it if you asked me to, but you, that was your
opener. And cause I saw the size of the file and you're just like hey don't don't even worry about it no that's the deal
and i love it because it puts pressure on me you can't say anything you can't that'll end your
career right well it's not like i'd be doing a fantasy draft being like oh yeah usually i let
it fly with some fireable stuff like no i just mean like you can't have any stumble. That's so bad that you're
just like, Hey, I have to do the whole thing all over again. Although everybody like with
podcasting has like different, like Bill wants to keep everything in. And if I have a monologue,
I'll be like, ah, let me rephrase this better. Usually. I mean, usually it's all one or two
takes, but every now and then I can want to hammer the end a little bit better.
Usually gets one or two edits too, by the way way he's usually good for one or two of those uh i think we're we're good how about just one last
one is that all right i don't know if we what what should the bucket list thing be though
gosling definitely i think gosling would be better i just can't imagine dicaprio ever being into it
i don't know that gosling would be into it either but i've always felt like i had a better chance
just no i think i've seen interviews of gosling that are good and interesting i don't i don't know that Gosling would be into it either, but I've always felt like I had a better chance just relating to him. No, I've seen interviews of Gosling that are good and interesting.
I can't really recall any DiCaprio things.
Busta Rhymes is up there.
I just think that'd be a lot of fun.
I think he'd actually end up enjoying it a lot.
I think there's a few rappers that I'd love to kind of do the police version with
and just ask GZA what it felt like to know he was the best,
but not the most popular.
I could do an hour straight on liquid swords uh there's that you've done rick ross right phrasing yeah we had him in the studio a couple times danny cannell asked how he could
join his entourage yeah this wasn't awkward at all do you have like a sports one like for ours
like we know allison's on it and i think she could actually pull it off like rick patino is our white
whale this year especially with all the saint john stuff like that's it's that's a clear number one
like do you have a clear sports one that you haven't already just pulled off recently the only
thing i'd like to do is have an honest brady conversation about the breakup and how must it
must have felt fucking incredible to win a superbowl after Belichick basically forced him out. If he would do that
conversation with me, honestly, and mentioned like, I mean, Brady's one of the most competitive
human beings. There's stories that I hear about him after the fact where I'm like, Oh my God.
Um, if Brady were honest about that and admit like it felt incredible and I couldn't believe
they were asking to move on from me and all this stuff and then look what happens after the fact both to me and him but you don't think it would
be more about like fucking resistance bands and uh like you know we could do some stuff on
resistance bands i get your point right like if it were strictly brady but it's if it's just to
get them booked not like how good is it going to be if it's just to get them booked like i'm not
because we do pass on stuff we pass like it's like okay that's a big name okay but the problem is they only want to
promote this tv show that they're an ep on i'm like so they're not even in the show and they
got the executive producer tag because of their resume and maybe it helped get a deal done or
they put money in or whatever and then they're going to tell us they want an oscar if this thing
works out but i can't ask this person about any of the other stuff i have to focus on this thing
they're not even part of i'm like then I don't want to do it.
What about the real Brandon Marshall?
Did you already do that?
The real Brandon Marshall?
Did that ever happen?
I can't remember.
We've been doing this probably for a while.
No, we never ended up with the real Brandon Marshall.
And it's still one of my favorite parts of the history of the show.
That's not Brandon Marshall.
That was...
I mean, if you ask me, like, is there one part of ever doing the show with
spotify ringer where you were freaking out you've been doing this long enough right how many i mean
how hard is this really like how many situations am i going to be in where i'm actually kind of
freaking out a little bit that was it that was probably it because i'm like what the fuck is
going on why do we who's who's, wait, and then.
What's it like being away from the team?
Is that where you started?
What's it like being away from your team or something?
Dude, I wasn't even that specific.
I was like, so what, yeah, what's the latest?
What's up with you?
So what have you been doing, man?
We should re-air that.
I just see the little bubbles and it's texting going i'm like oh
fuck and i'm texting going what the fuck is going on and then i'm double checking to be like did i
screw this up and i'm reading the booking confirmation while i'm interviewing brandon
marshall and thank god i figured it out that i was like oh wait that's that guy from the broncos
yeah that was like when he was in the broncos, I really liked him. Like, that linebacking duo was pretty nasty.
I was like, okay, but you want to talk about two minutes fucking flying blind.
I think you almost hit, like, 18 minutes with that conversation, too.
Like, it was pretty good sound.
It ended up being pretty good.
Yeah, he ended up being really good.
And I don't know, have we ever heard from him that he thinks it's hilarious?
He might think it's really insulting.
I thought you talked to him.
No? You didn't talk to him i thought you did i thought somebody said they knew and they i don't
know if that might have been off the air where somebody told him and he did think it was funny
and it was a mutual friend that knew him or worked with him or whatever because it's not like it's
the first time it's ever happened the first time it happened to him at all but specific to that
playing out that way that has to be the first time because i have on air yeah our
confirmation was brandon marshall the receiver prepped out the interview not a huge deal figured
out all the different paths i want to go to zoom pops up and i'm like what the fuck
and i'm getting a countdown and i can't tell him on the zoom hold on i have to figure out who you
are yeah i think a bunch of people
were wondering whose fault it was i was like did i there's no way i did this i read i was like this
is brandon marshall the receiver but like uh crazy it was we went back and kind of looked over the
timeline i feel good about our our role in the whole thing culpability in in what did or didn't
happen on that one okay uh last one
i don't know are you guys having fun with this yeah that's some laughs some chuckles okay this
is um this is feedback that will help maybe god i really i really like this one and that's why i
saved it for last although the email address makes me think it might be fake, but it's pretty funny.
All right, last one here.
6'2", 202, long torso, short legs.
Great swimmer's body, I believe.
The recent dream sharing discussion in Kyle's prison break, feeling extra chatty this episode,
fight with his wife, really hit home with me.
What did you say?
You just kept having to pause prison break with the wife i
don't think i even paused it i think i was just looking at her blankly and then after like the
fifth interruption of her giving thoughts on the show it wasn't even like non-show things i was
like wow got a lot to say this episode huh that was the end of the good times v you've got a lot
to say this episode is just like that's you're signing up for something the end of the good times. V, you've got a lot to say this episode.
It's just like, you're signing up for something the rest of the night.
I don't think shut up would have been better,
but I'm not sure that what I said was better than shut up.
I think it's worse, but some people really have a hard time with shut up.
I said to Van Pelt straight up, I'm like, shut up on the air.
I was pissed.
I was like, there was little simmering stuff with him.
I felt like he was sunning me a bit on the flag football game.
And I was like,
I don't need a fucking speech from you about what I need to do or not do.
We went through it with the basketball game and now it's football again.
And you're fucking like,
guess who's going out there.
Guess who's not.
And then he was like,
he gave me a look.
Like you just said,
shut up to me on the air.
Yeah.
Some people like think fuck you is fine.
Some people are like, how dare you? No, he was not having it me on the air yeah some people like think fuck you is fine some people are like how dare you
no he was not having it and I think
one of his like it's not okay
I think one of his best friends who I've become really
good friends with was like when you said to him
shut up on the air and you
meant it like we were dying
but we kind of were like fuck you too
like taking Scott's side
and I was like yeah
yeah I mean,
the thing that always kind of sucked is that I,
Scott knew that he couldn't kick my ass.
So I think that was always in the back of our minds a little bit that like no
one's ever really going to fight,
but at least for one of you,
it was confirmed.
Although he could have given me kicked off the show,
which would have been a lot worse than getting my ass kicked.
But,
um,
yeah,
whatever.
I don't know.
I mean,
he might not even like that last part.
I'm admitting,
look,
I've admitted,
I think a lot over the course
of the years of the show
with Scott and I,
that,
uh,
that,
that some of the stuff,
well,
look,
a lot of the stuff,
but look,
we never broke up
because we didn't like each other.
We fucking loved each other.
Uh,
but you know, like brothers, you start to fight a little bit, but we didn't like each other. We fucking loved each other. Uh, but you know, like brothers who start to fight a little bit,
but we didn't really fight that much at all, which is pretty amazing. Okay. Anyway. So,
uh, my wife does not listen to the podcast, but started listening to life advice with me to the
point she requested that I pause the episodes before life advice. So we could listen together
that, uh, that would be fine. But about one and a half sentences into Ryan reading an email,
she will without fail,
start talking over the podcast saying why the emailer is a jerk.
Why the advice Saru's giving is terrible.
Oh man.
Yeah.
What the fuck?
As you can imagine,
this makes the podcast unlistenable for me.
I'm not even sure how she can hear over her own voice,
but I imagine she must have the broadcast news gene where she'd be great
at delivering a story on Libyan pilots with Holly Hunter yelling in her ear. That is a tough skill
to have somebody in your ear and not sound like you're being disrupted by it. The first time it
happened to me when I was on TV, I was like, what is this? But a good producer stays out of the ear.
Quick, precise, concise, efficiency. That's what we're all looking for in life.
So I've tried everything I think of. I paused the episode, but 15 seconds into restarting,
she starts again. I've used her phone to subscribe and download the episodes and I'll text her the
timestamp for life advice, but she only wants to listen with me and I can tell it hurts her
feelings if I would listen without her. I couldn't bear missing another Ryan Zinger or a Frolic Room fraudster update, so I started
dropping hints.
When she would ask to listen, I would tell her I hadn't downloaded yet and I don't have
it queued up.
I would wait for Ryan to say something saucy and then say, of course, he would say that.
After a few weeks of groundwork, I told her I don't really listen to the podcast anymore
because I can't stand Ryan's politics.
Oh my God.
Is that a Mulaney?
I think that's Mulaney, right?
This is unbelievable.
Yeah.
Because somebody else asked us what a Mulaney is
and we were like,
we'll make that one really quick.
Mulaney's standup routine,
especially when he hosted this
and Ellie did this whole thing,
laid out the two different timelines
and tied it up at the end of the punchline
was bringing the two things together.
Full circle.
A lot of comedians do it.
A few do it as well as creatively as Mulaney does.
So that's what we mean when we're like,
ah, Mulaney did it.
So basically the guy was like,
I'd wait for Ryan to say something saucy,
then say, of course, he would say that.
So he was starting to criticize me of like assuming
everything i was saying was leading towards one of my political standards you're an on-rampant
yeah right so then she started kind of buying it and then he i don't know this is some fucking
masterwork here right now i told her the non-life advice segments had taken a right turn and i
thought ryan was trying to become the next Joe Rogan. She responded, quote,
I knew it all along.
You know how many people
have said that?
I know, I've heard that a lot.
And hasn't asked to listen to
a life advice since.
Wow. I'm so impressed.
Just to not say shut up.
That's crazy. He just blamed my politics,
which are not super political, but some will suggest that they are. But whatever. I'm not
going to argue with you because you've already made up your mind. I think this is just this
isn't even about me being the next Rogan. This isn't about my politics. This isn't about it's
about that. You found a creative way to get your wife to stop listening to something that she liked because you knew if you planted
enough seeds, she would tune me out based on an assumption. And now you're back at peace
with that segment all to yourself. You should be writing books. Great job by you. Yeah.
Well, she clearly sucks if she doesn't like my advice too so happy yeah wow I think you're just
straight and narrow
I think it's like
my dad's always like
just do the right thing man
it's like Saruti
you're dad
you do the right thing
mostly
yeah you know
I try to play it
pretty straight
is what it is
but you know
some people don't like it
it is what it is
what are you gonna do
I'm telling you right now
based on other ones
that we didn't read
and I didn't do this purposely
there's a big
Saruti momentum
push happening
okay
we didn't get to any of those. Maybe you'll be a guest one day
too, Cerruti. Maybe, maybe one day.
Mulaney'd it.
Nice,
Mulaney. Okay, that's Friday
Feedback. Emails, fridayfeedbackrr
at gmail.com. Enjoy
this special Friday show and the live
edition of the show. We will have
