Bam, bam.
Uh-oh, I just saw a text come in.
Oh, shit, I don't have my phone with me.
Oh, there it is.
Rich Holton, Stephen Plyler, Hector, Andrew, Hector.
Bam, we're live.
We're a little early today.
First, I would like to say, give 10 seconds to the beautiful, sweet sounds.
That's the sound of a 360-degree barbell brush by Hybrid Athletics.
Two of my guests have given feedback on that.
Rich Froning said it like, wait, what the fuck?
Oh, hold on.
It's Brian.
Let's see what's going on.
Hey.
He sent me the link for last week's episode.
Ah, the link for last week's episode.
All right.
Thank you.
We'll fix that right now.
All right.
Send him the link for this week's episode.
And this week's episode.
And this week's episode.
And we're so last week. How's that? Bam. Heidi. Hi, Bruce. Hi, Will. Hi, Caleb. Hi, Brian friend. Hi. Uh, finally, um, if you go to paper street coffee and you buy coffee and you use the
code seven, you get 20% off.
That's pretty damn cool.
And that only works until March 27th.
And when you do that, you get entered to win a barbell from rogue, the Ohio bar, a custom
one.
I don't know what's custom about it.
I don't know if it looks like coffee, smells like coffee, tastes like coffee, but it's custom.
So there.
This is a show that will discuss Colton Merton in detail.
For three and a half hours, we will be prying into his scores, his movements, all things Colton Mertons.
What place is he in?
To dissect Colton Mertens, we have
Brian Friend.
Brian, the
dissector friend.
It's a new one.
And
Angelo,
give us the scoop on Roman training
at Mayhem De Chico.
I wouldn't know yet.
I haven't been there. I'm at work.
Someone sent me a link. He posted on his story
that he landed in
heaven or something, and it was him, I think,
looking around the Mayhem gym. Is he in Cookville?
Yeah. Yeah, he's here.
That's dope. I think today was his first day.
That's awesome.
That's awesome,
awesome, awesome.
What's he doing there? doing there fleeing his country oh man can you play that i caramba i caramba i don't know is this is this
place better oh yeah that place is better right there oh man everything's better with rich he
could have just brought rich to russia and everything would be fine. Yeah.
Was that the plan all along?
Are you surprised to see him there, or is that the plan all along?
I think it was the plan within the last couple weeks.
I believe he reached out and said he wanted to come and train with us.
I think he's going to train a little bit.
I don't know if he's staying until quarterfinals,
but I know he's going to do quarterfinals here and then probably stay till the games i think that's the plan and i get and i guess
we'll stay until quarterfinals because they're very soon and i guess we'll see what happens
what crossfit's reaction brian have you heard anything what crossfit's gonna do this year in
terms of letting people move around last year we had the the covid stuff so certain people
no your hair looks good your hair looks good. Your hair looks good.
The COVID... It's very square on top.
I don't know what's going on here.
You usually wear a hat.
We usually don't get to see your hair.
I got a haircut.
Very lovely lady from the gym
gave me a haircut.
Did she do it at the gym?
No.
It's...
You know Scott Polanski who occasionally comments in here that if I discuff with it, it's his wife.
Yeah, my favorite.
That's my favorite listener.
Don't tell anyone.
So Colton Mertens is in fourth place with 35 points.
Holy smokes.
It's incredible.
Saxon Panchik, Matt Poulin.
Am I saying that name right? Poulin?
Yeah. Justin
Medeiros. I'm the only person in the game that says
his name right. And Colton Mertens.
Wow. We'll just continue
on with the top 10 and then we'll
talk about why these guys are all in the top 10.
Phil Toon.
Victor
Jungdal. Victor Lungal.
This isn't a subject to change or anything, is it?
This is done, right?
All scores should be entered by now,
but there is, of course, a review process that could still happen.
Okay.
Is that L silent?
What country is that?
That blue flag
with the yellow stripes the yellow cross on it do we know sweden okay
uh june gal loon gal loon gal we'll make the j silent okay long doll long doll jay crouch
who we had on the show. Scott Tetlow.
I keep seeing his name.
He hasn't been on the show, right?
No.
Cedric Lapointe and Dallin Pepper.
Those are the top ten.
Amazing.
And then all the way down at number 13,
we have Mayhem's strongest entry into page one of the 2022 CrossFit Games Open.
Rich Froning.
If we're going to talk about mayhem, we should go to number 14 as well.
Tyler Christofal.
We should notice that Charles Curran is no longer the fittest in mayhem.
Wow.
Sorry, Charles.
What got him?
Still very fit, though.
Still very fit.
I think it was just a tough workout for him i mean overall just may just not be his strengths like the last two weeks were
the last two weeks happened like i mean we talked about last week they were pretty similar um and he
was good at those workouts and then the workout came out that he wasn't just just wasn't as great. He did well, though. And number 50, holding down page one, Scott Panchik.
Scott Panchik, who is apparently signing up for quarterfinals
despite being retired.
How do you know?
Did he say that?
Has he talked about that?
I think someone sent me something on Instagram today that he'd –
I didn't even look at it.
Someone just said that he was you know, that he'd, I didn't even look at it.
Someone just said that he was signing up for quarterfinals.
Is Scott Patrick the Tom Brady of the CrossFit world?
We'll see if Kristen Holta signs up too.
Yeah, I don't know.
But anyway, so in these top 10.
Yes.
One of the top 10 is here. Yes, he is shit look at that hair pretend like you don't see him what's up fellas i'm seeing double so on screen is in the bottom screen uh so go go ahead
and say what you were saying brian and we'll introduce our guest no i'm actually happy that
colton's here and he can he can perhaps provide some perspective on this.
Nine of the guys in the top ten –
I would say eight of the guys in the top ten I would consider to be
either slight or short relative to an average CrossFitter,
like an average games male CrossFitter.
The exceptions would be Justin Medeiros,
who's basically like the ideal build and Dallin Pepper,
who's way bigger than everyone else in this group.
And,
but it's really not like look at what the tests are.
It's not that surprising.
Whether it's the gymnastics or the thrusters,
they were the,
I don't know what was the crux for everyone in the final workout,
but it's probably a little bit more advantageous to be smaller for that.
If you're sprinting the workout,
which all of these guys are.
Deadlifts and burpees, both going to favor a slighter, smaller athlete if it's a moderate weight, which it was.
And the first workout, same thing.
There was nothing there that would be favorable for a taller athlete.
We knew that it wasn't going to be rowing or wall balls.
There was nothing that was super heavy.
Not to say that any of these guys wanted to do well on a strong lift anyway.
Heavy, not to say that any of these guys wanted to dwell on a strong lift anyway,
but I'm not by any means am I surprised of the makeup of body composition of the guys in the top 10 with the exception of Dallin Pepper.
And look how young they all are.
There is also, yes, a youth movement for sure is going on in CrossFit.
I cannot believe Dallin Pepper is 20 years old.
Colton has pigs on the farm
older than that
Colton am I off base here?
another way I could say it is
these are the guys with the best capacity
yeah I mean
the tests are what they are
and usually the best way to find out
whether it's a good workout for a shorter athlete
taller athlete, heavier athlete is just look at the leaderboard there's a lot of short
guys a lot of tall guys and i haven't looked at it yet but yeah if there's a lot of short guys at
the top it's probably safe to say that the programming favored shorter levers
well and i've and i've written an article that i think will come out in the next day or two about the stark and noticeable differences in this year's Open from what we have come to expect from the Open based on the previous 11 years.
Yeah.
That mustache is so vato.
It's so vato.
It's cool, huh?
Oh, my God.
I hope you're getting a low rider.
That thing is amazing.
Holy cow.
Okay, sorry.
I interrupted.
Do you remember what you were saying?
Who, me?
I don't know what I was saying.
No, no.
Colton was about to say something in slow motion.
Go ahead, Colton.
No? Colton? Just, hello? no colton just hello colton okay fuck it i'll ask another question colton did you want fourth place oh shit his connection's bad
hey colton can you go out on the roof and fix that take the clothes put another clothes hanger on the end of that uh
okay hey can you hear me now yeah oh shit We just lost your picture. That's good. Oh, look at that shirt. Holy shit. He's repping the TDC shirt.
Oh my goodness. Hey, um, in all seriousness, what size is the good size to get for a dude
who's 185? Is that, are you wearing a large? Yeah, it's a large.
And it fits you good. Is it too small or is it good?
No, it's perfect.
Um, did you want fourth place? Were you it's perfect. Did you want fourth place?
Were you working hard to get fourth place?
There's this kind of – because the open – and I say this somewhat tongue-in-cheek, doesn't mean anything anymore.
It's been kind of become –
No, no, no.
What it means is uncertain.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
Yes.
Right, right.
And you corrected me on that last week too i like that brian saying it's uncertain because we don't know with how all the changes in
the world with covet and war and whatnot what the actual implications of the open are because they
could change in any minute is that what you're saying brian we could break into world war three
and it could be the top 40 in the open they go and fucking that's it right i mean is that right
no yes well that would be pretty brutal considering
the number and scope of the tests oh dude how about this sorry colton what if what if something
crazy did happen like a pandemic world war three two and they had to take the top 40 and rich went
uh uh into the um individual holy shit hey if they did that i bet you he way. Hey, if they did that, I bet you he'd do it.
No way.
If they did that?
Yeah, because he'd look at the list and he'd see that most of the guys that had a chance to beat him are gone.
And he's basically locked for a second.
Only one left who can challenge him is on the screen right now, Colton.
Hey, I beat him three out of three.
I beat him on all three workouts.
I beat him three out of three.
I beat him on all three workouts.
Every time you talk shit about Rich,
all I do is stare at Angelo's face to see if like,
he's going to start melting,
you know,
careful.
He can handle himself.
He can handle himself.
He'll probably be in the comments soon.
Colton,
did you repeat any of the, did you repeat any of the workouts?
Oh yeah. I had some back issues so um like like obviously the first two workouts
were pretty like low back intensive and uh had some back issues so i gave those ones a second
try just because i'm going to see how i could deal with uh managing my back a little bit better. Had some tightness going on, some sciatic nerve issues going on.
But yeah, but other than that.
Most people have back issues and therefore only do it once.
Mertens does it five times.
I wanted to know what my actual capacity on those workouts were.
I wanted to know what my actual capacity was
and I wanted to give it a good effort
so I could truly get tested
and see where I fall. Did you do better the second time? Yeah, I've never done a workout twice and
gotten worse. Interesting. And what did you do between the first workout and the second workout
to mitigate like the injury? Uh, some of it was, uh, like just stuff at the farm. Uh, some work we
had to do was really tightening it up.
So once I got that done, that helped relieve it a bit.
And then also just going and doing some hot tub sessions after I got done with my swimming workouts when I was at the rec.
And I got one of those vibrating foam rollers from CrossFit Kilo 2 when I went up there for a day.
And that actually helped a lot too.
It's basically a ball
and you just put you just dig in with it and let it vibrate yeah it actually worked pretty good i
was surprised and then the third workout um you took a fourth place in it you got 424 which is
insane it's actually the only person two people in the top 10 one of them tied you cedric lapointe
and scott tetlow uh beat you but everyone else in that top 10 you one of them tied you, Cedric LaPointe, and Scott Tetlow beat you.
But everyone else in that top 10, you crushed.
Did you do that one?
How many times did you do that one?
Yeah, I did that just once.
Wow.
So you think you could even do that one faster is what you're saying?
I don't know.
The day I did it, that was the fastest time I could go that day.
Except I tripped on my double unders. Other than that, that was the fastest time I could go that day. Except I tripped on my double unders.
Other than that, that was the best I had that day.
Awesome.
Brian, you know Colton.
Just from these three workouts, do you think this is a better Colton than we saw last year?
I mean, that's hard to say.
Too early?
No, I mean, I would have – I would say this. I would have expected him to do well on all three of these workouts
and I would also be shocked if he's
not better than he was last year
I actually wasn't expecting
to do well on the first workout I was pretty
nervous about that one
I haven't done well on box jumps
in the past and that new
wall walk standard was a little bit difficult.
But I was, I was.
Yeah, that's, I have faith in you.
Colton, what did you think about the overall programming?
Well, there wasn't anything super long.
My dad just found me.
No, there wasn't anything super long. My dad just found me. No, there wasn't anything super long. The first one was 15 minutes, which isn't that terribly long.
We've had 20-minute open workouts before, and it wasn't anything heavy,
so that was kind of strange.
I really thought there was going to be a 22.4 with a lift in it,
and I think they kind of made a mistake not doing that
and only having three events.
Good test of capacity overall, though, I think.
Angelo?
Yeah, I agree.
There wasn't a long test, and there wasn't really a heavy test.
And I understand that it's only three weeks now, so they can only do so much.
But I would have liked to have seen one longer test and one heavier test.
So changing one of the workouts and then adding a lift.
So I think Colton's kind of, I agree with him.
Is that the new gym, Colton?
No, this is the garage where I've been training at.
My gym won't be built until probably late summer, early fall is when it'll get finished.
You're not in that small little hut with the uneven floor and all that shit anymore?
No, that's where
i am right now oh that is oh okay yep yep there she blows um colton do you know do you know which
semi-final or is there any way that you would know what semi-final you're going to go to after
the quarterfinals already brian's looking at me like no i have no idea yet. Hopefully I'll place top 10 in the quarters,
and then they'll give us a choice if they do the same thing as they did last year.
But, you know, they may not even do that, so we'll see.
And then if they did, which one would you go to?
I'd probably choose Granite Games because it's pretty close,
and I feel like the program was pretty decent last year.
I expect they're probably going to have a long workout this year
because they didn't have anything last year,
and they kind of got roasted for that.
But that'll be fine.
They've been working on that a lot.
Well, what I would expect is that the programming across all the semifinals
is a little bit more thought out from CrossFit's perspective,
meaning that obviously there are going to be two standardized workouts,
but I'm hoping that in addition to that they'll say,
you know, here's workout one, here's workout two. You need to be two standardized workouts, but I'm hoping that in addition to that, they'll say, you know,
here's workout one, here's workout two.
You need to have four other workouts.
One of them needs to be in this time domain.
One of them needs to be a heavy implement.
One of them needs to, like, can they give them a little bit more structure so that we don't have those outlier situations
where there's one semifinal that doesn't go long.
There's one semifinal that has a super high skill,
very difficult gymnastics movement,
and then none of the others have those things or the other way around.
Yeah, that would be ideal.
I think that's what all the athletes want for sure.
It really sucks when you go into a semifinal and you just don't know.
You're going to be subject to the biases of those running the event,
and you definitely saw that from event to event last year.
There's definitely biases, and there's major differences in the event. And you definitely saw that from event to event last year. There's definitely biases and,
uh,
there's major differences in the program.
I mean,
you even see it in the off season events,
you know,
you know what you're getting at rogue compared to Dubai compared to the
water blues is going to be a little bit different.
And really the nature of the semifinals isn't,
isn't any different than that.
And I think that even the CrossFit even needs to be specific and say,
you need to have a workout with deficit handstand pushups,
but they can't be strict or something like that.
Because if one semifinal has a strict deficit handstand pushup,
another has regular handstand pushups, and another has handstand walking.
I mean, those are three very different tests.
And CrossFit should have, if they have, this season should be well thought out
and there should be progressions throughout the season.
So we've already done wall walking.
There needs to be some kind of upper body pressing or movement This season should be well thought out, and there should be progressions throughout the season. So we've already done wall walking.
There needs to be some kind of upper body pressing or movement in the semifinal stage,
and there needs to be one at the games. And you can't have semifinals that have done four different versions of handstand pushups,
and then one of those versions is also tested at the games.
Exactly.
And, you know, I mean, CrossFit has, you would think they have a plan for the open quarters in the games, but the semifinals is out of their hands.
So that seems kind of silly.
And even just having, like saying, okay, you have to have strict handstand pushups.
You know, there was an event at the MAC last year.
I think it had four handstand pushups per round.
Yeah.
So, I mean, handstand pushupsups per round yeah so i mean handstand push-ups weren't tested there that'd be
like at grand games if they programmed 10 wall balls per round as opposed to 33 i would have
blew through that workout and i wouldn't have been tested on wall balls so that makes a difference
too so it's really i mean they i hope in the future crossfit will just take control of programming all of them and hopefully have a vision for the whole season
i think i i like uh i like the semifinals having uh a little bit of freedom because then
but not as much as last year that's pretty much all i have to say is i think last year was kind
of like the wild west like it was just you know here's a couple movements you need to do
you choose what you want to do i like that they kind of left them out let them do whatever they want but it needs to be a
little bit more uniform because like colton just said yeah they may have they probably told them
hey you need to do handstand push-ups or hey you need to do wall balls but like
the event itself was so broad um i think they need to dial it in at least a little bit
colton thanks for popping on christmas came early for the uh
savant podcast always love having you around buddy i appreciate you
lending some of your star power to us and i would say colton in that in this
order i'm very impressed by your hairstyle your t-shirt and your open
performance I'm very impressed by your hairstyle, your T-shirt, and your open performance.
I second that.
I second that.
All right.
Well, I think that's a good night to leave on.
All right, brother.
Good night.
Thank you.
See you.
That was a nice surprise, Ivan.
Appreciate that.
I was going back and forth.
Should I tell them?
I said, no, they'll be like the surprise.
There's some surprises that are not good surprises.
That was a good one. Okay. Now that he's gone i'm asking the hard question and this is this really i just really
wish that like i i and you guys can slap me around for saying dumb shit like this but i wish like the
top five of the open automatically get to go to the games or something like that i just want to
add some value to the open of danger i don't like that um but who in this top 10 is would is is
i have two questions for you guys who wouldn't maybe we should do top 15 even but in who in
this top 10 of the men we're looking at we'll do the same with the women is a going to the games
and b gonna finish top 10 in the games of the top 10 or the the top 15? What is top 15 too much to manage?
No.
Can we see the top 15?
Let's do top 16 because we know
Rich is doing teams, so Rich doesn't count.
Let's do top 16.
Rich is fucking everything up.
Okay, of the top 16,
I would expect
that Saxon Pancik,
Justin Medeiros
Phil Toon
Jay Crouch
Dallin Pepper
and Jeff Adler
and I guess Jason Hopper
would make the games
wait wait
so can you do that one more time
because I want to write these down
because I'm going to ask a question
you had Saxon
you had Justin
and then I missed someone in there
Phil Toon
okay Phil Toon
Jay Crouch
I'm skipping some people intentionally I'm going to come back to here Dallin Pepper Justin, and then I missed someone in there. Phil Toon. Phil Toon. Okay, Phil Toon. Jay Crouch.
I'm skipping some people intentionally that I'm going to come back to here.
Dallin Pepper.
Okay.
Jeff Adler and Jason Hopper.
Those would be the guys that I would say I expect them to make the games.
So about 50%? Hold on.
Okay.
There are other guys on this list like Matt Poulin, Colton Mertens uh cedric lapointe alex catullus and tyler
christophel who i think have a legitimate good and good chance to make the games but i would put
them in a different like i would expect the top group and i would say these guys have a good
chance to make it so that's it and now you're looking at most of the list so so matt pool and
took second let me let me play let me bug you and angelo a little bit here matt pool and took second you think it's okay that a guy
takes second in the open and he's not a shoe in 100 okay yeah i don't i hate that well well it's
a you know it depends on what's going on but there are guys who have finished like third or fifth in an open before and finished 33rd in their regional two months later wow because i for the first thing is i've
said this a million times and i'll always stick to it i really don't care what you do in an online
competition i want to see you do it in a live competition right and it's and look i i'm also
saying that most of the guys in the top 20 are legitimate and good in live competition.
But there are always and I've written about this and I've talked about this.
There are always one or two guys that pop in there or women that pop in there that then when the next time you see them in a live competition, you go, how is it possible that this athlete got second in the world and also can't do this?
that this athlete got second in the world and also can't do this.
And the reason is because the scope and breadth of the test,
and particularly this year, is not enough to qualify anyone to the games.
Yeah, I agree with everything you're saying, and that's why I don't like it.
I just want there to be more pressure so I can enjoy it more as a fan and more as a pundit.
My follow-up to that is, Brian, out of the top 15 in quarterfinals so let's just fast
forward the top 15 quarterfinals how many of those do you think are going to be at the games you
think it's you think you probably more out of the top what how many angelo out of the top so we're
talking the top 15 or 16 in the open at the top 15 of the quarterfinals i would say it'd be i would say it'd be more like
10 or 11 of those guys it might even might even be higher than that yeah the so the thing about
the quarterfinals is there'll be more tests there'll be heavier implements there'll be higher
skill tests there'll be a greater range of time domain tested and what you heard colton just say
the athletes perception even though crossfit has not this, is that there's value for finishing in the top 10. So they want to finish in the top 10.
So more of the better athletes will give it a further go. Someone messaged me today and said,
I watched all of Rich Froning's workouts and his heart rate never exceeded 152 on any of the three
workouts. It seems like he probably had more in the tank he had a heart rate monitor on yeah he would yeah he wears it and they display that side by side
with his workouts and you can see it going down as he's doing toes to bars and down as he's doing
thrusters and up as he's walking across the gym like uh angelo is he making bank from that
rich if you're in the comments god i hope he's fucking making bank you want to
see my heartbeat oh yeah i'll be 50 grand to work out do you want to see this like that's awesome
yeah oh that's a great question brian what the fuck is rich doing is he on fentanyl again
he has a ridiculously low heart rate so like he he's concerned that he's just a big old boom boom
he thinks he's he thinks he's just weak like he thinks he's mentally weak and his and uh
it's it's funny it's funny to hear him talk about it because it like stresses him out
oh this guy lied to me look the first clip we pulled is over 152 oh it's cool you're close
enough wow whoopi is fucking killing it they got the the rich froning. I love this when it happens.
He starts out a set of gymnastics, and it's in the high 150s,
and you just slowly see it goes down as he does an unbroken set of 15.
It's like, how is this happening?
Well, look at that.
He's transitioning here.
His heart rate's going down.
When I get off the bar, my heart rate goes up 15 points.
He just drug some gum off the bottom of his shoe before he started.
Here's the jump rope that everyone forgot.
It wasn't a part of this workout.
And he's got the liver King,
20 pound ankle weights on.
Oh shit.
His heart rate,
heart rate is going down.
Brian.
Holy shit.
I'm telling you,
it's crazy.
Oh my God.
He's so good at doubling.
He is so good at doubling.
Let's see. I hope it spikes here because this is so, these were so doubling. He is so good at doubling. Oh, my God. Let's see.
I hope it spikes here because these were so hard.
This is ridiculous.
His heart beats down to 129.
How much are those thrusters?
Is it 135?
Yeah.
This is crazy.
So it went down to 126 before it started going up again.
Yeah, this is nuts.
We got to see someone else.
I think there's a little bit of a delay to it, though.
So, like, I think when it spikes here in a minute, that will be actually during the thrusters.
Man.
Fascinating.
Okay, so when we saw his heartbeat going down, that was probably in the transition and not when he was actually doing the double unders.
Well, and then I,
nothing.
Caleb,
you're muted.
It was within the same timeframe.
Like if you look at the timer on top of the whoop,
it says four 48.
If you look at the clock in the bottom left of the video,
it says four 48.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So,
so my,
the only thing that I have noticed about the whoop is even though it says it on there,
um,
I wear one too.
So if it says it on there,
I still think it's a few seconds behind. I could be on there, I still think it's a few seconds behind.
I could be totally wrong, but I think it's a few seconds behind.
And I love my Whoop just as much as anybody else.
Any wrist heart rate monitor is not as good as the actual chest strap.
Hey, listen, Whoopie.
You want me to wear one of those during the show?
I'll take 50 grand a show and i'll fucking wear a
whoopee and you can see how a paper street coffee raises my heartbeat and shit like that
and when someone uses sex instead of uh gender you get all i'll get all twisted wow okay so
so back to the subject and brian derailed us with dudes with their shirts off and whoopies um so we're okay with this we're we're
as a we're okay with the fact that the open is just like these stepping stones like colin
lawrence said in the comments this is good for the affiliates it gives people a chance i just
don't like it because i want to see some more pressure on the athletes and i want to know that
everyone tried their hardest instead of fucking rich running's heartbeat dropping down to 126
that's like me when i'm asleep right but you guys are cool with it
you as a as a coach gym owner and a commentator and analysis analytics guy brian you're okay with
it you're okay with it as an athlete angela yes yes but we do admit that not everyone went their
hardest the rich could have placed higher than there are a lot of things about the open that i
that i'm less than satisfied with this year but in general we you have to look at the total picture and you and crossfit laid it out there and they put the
rule book out earlier than they ever have and we understood that the open was a qualifier to the
quarterfinals which is a qualifier to semifinals and if you're looking for people to try their
hardest the best athletes in the world to try their hardest you might get in quarterfinals
but you're really not going to get it till semifinals.
With a couple exceptions.
I mean, there are, you know, like...
Go ahead, Angela.
Go ahead, Brian.
No, no, you were talking.
Go ahead.
No, no, I wasn't. Mine's not that important.
Say it.
Well, now I forgot.
Because I'm flustered.
Well, basically, Brian didn't want to go.
Brian's being very civil.
He's basically saying we knew in advance these were the rules.
We know how it's supposed to play out.
And according to their rules and how it's supposed to play out, they did a good job.
Although it's not the way he would have played out the whole thing, right?
Like if you were in charge, maybe you would.
I'm not saying that they did a good job.
Oh.
I'm just saying we knew what we were getting okay okay fair okay and this and this open in particular this year's open is uh uh i think is this is what they really intended last year i
think they softened the blow last year by having a fourth workout but this is what i think that
we're going to get going forward.
What I was going to say, okay, let me give a metaphor for it.
So it's like if you take a girl out and you know her, she says, hey,
I have to be home by 10, you might not like it,
but you knew before you went out that she has to be home by 10.
Is that what you're saying, Brian?
You'd like to like drop to 11.
Right, okay.
Go ahead, Angelo.
I think another thing is to uh consider how far away
from the games we are a lot of people don't peak this time of season some people um i know when uh
matt was at uh mayhem like he he wouldn't even really train until the open started so like he
you were getting like his least fit version i'm sure there's several people like that. One person that kind of came to mind is I think Will Morad was like in like 120,
120, anyway, 100, he was over 100.
And I thought he would be higher because kind of we were talking about the short
lever guys are doing really well.
And he's a shorter guy, stronger guy.
And I feel like these tests were not bad tests for him.
I would expect to see him higher. But I think he's one of those guys that saves it yeah 153rd he's kind of one of those
guys i would believe that would save it for the peak of the season so i think there's a lot of
guys like that well he better hurry up will you're 33 you better stop saving that shit um uh how far
are we from the games how many days are we from the games day one of the days
i couldn't tell you days okay we're basically four and a half months five months
sure oh yeah yeah i just wanted the keyboard sound effects do it that's caleb's brain working
oh if you spit up your drink on the show, that would be fucking amazing.
Man, I have this question I want to get out.
So first of all, the name of this group, CrossFit Libertad, I can't ever read it right.
It's like I just see what I want to see.
But what happened over there?
I saw five teams got jacked, and one of them is one of your teams.
Are you on that team, Angelo?
You're on one of the Mayhem teams.
You're not on the team that got kicked off, are you?
No, I didn't.
I saw a comment about it.
If you want to talk about this, we should pull up CrossFit's announcement of it.
It's on CrossFit Games Media.
It's like a two-sentence announcement.
Well, that's good.
I like that.
That's easy.
Can I bring you on that or should I get on that?
I know you're multitasking.
You're counting over 100 days right now.
He's counting the hours.
He's counting the seconds to the games.
I asked him a question and there were two yeses.
The answer to both of them. And he nodded.
Um,
I,
it's just,
it's,
um,
there were,
there were,
is that accurate though?
There were five teams that were disqualified already.
And what,
why I'm tripping about that.
And I don't follow the team competition well,
but what I'm tripping is because my understanding was,
is that like,
basically you don't even choose your teams yet.
You could put a hundred people on the teams and how would they know?
There are specific rules about rules about the team competition.
And if we can pull up that slide, you'll see that CrossFit has basically said that those five teams were not following one of the rules.
That is outlined in the rulebook that was released early and before the season started this year.
And do they tell us which rules each team broke?
They all broke the same rule.
Okay.
I'm looking for it, by the way, right now.
And there is a – yeah, here we go.
Today, five – this is on March 12, 2022.
Today, five teams participating in the CrossFit Affiliate Cup
have been declared ineligible for 2022 competition.
The following teams were training under an affiliate that does not offer physical training locations. Oh, wow. Wow. Teams were therefore training primarily in secondary
locations unrelated to the affiliate. Oh, so this is a much, much more complicated issue than
I'm going to talk about tonight.
But look at the look at the affiliate.
They're all listed as.
OK, they're all it's all listed as the same one.
And if you look at me and what is that, what is SDC?
It's an affiliate in Argentina.
OK, it's an affiliate that I believe you can find on the affiliate maps page or whatever.
that I believe you can find on the affiliate maps page or whatever.
Okay.
And, but they were, you know,
but the location that's associated with this place is what's being drawn into question.
It has a phone number. Should I call it?
Have you called this number? I don't even know this it says location is
huma huaca 4162 caba bs as 1192 well i see the problem right there um does can we google earth that what do you know angelo did you was do you know anything i mean that that that has mayhem in front
of it this is brand brand new news to me oh all right this is brand new to me sorry no it's okay
fuck you don't not a big deal at all and what is that what is the bigger issue
brian that you were going to say that you were not talking about on this show
well that's a silly question
all right where where are you going to talk about are you going to do an article are you
coming back on the show to talk about it are you you doing it? I will talk about it when I have the green light to talk about it.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
All right.
All right.
So, but those teams are out.
And what we, what we think it's because that might not be an actual location based on what
I just read.
I mean, it's hard to understand what that says, but that basically says my interpretation
of what that is, is that they Google earth that, or they had someone drive by there and there's no fucking CrossFit gym there.
That's what that's.
So, you know, or that they're not, there's, there's just, let me just, just let me tell you, there's a lot more to this situation than just this season or just this example.
Like there's a much bigger problem in play here.
And I hope that over time it will be talked about and um and fixed but for this
year those teams are out and in particular the mayhem libertad team uh i think that lena rodriguez
can still compete as an individual and has a very good chance to make the games i think jimena de la
mer has a great chance to make it as a master's athlete if she wants to. And the other two guys, Santi Comba and Nicholas Badarte, are both, you know, top 10 guys in South America as individuals, probably.
So for them as a team, it's a it's a blow for the Mayhem, you know, you know, Empire team.
They were going to have four teams and that was probably the team to beat in South America.
So they'll they'll miss out. But the individuals are still very good and have another route to compete
this year.
I believe.
That was just Brian,
just showing off,
but I,
but I'm impressed how you threw all those names out and shit.
Those are all the people who are on the mayhem team,
Brian,
that you talked about specifically,
not the other four teams.
Yeah.
Did that team have a chance?
Did any of those teams have a chance of going to the games as a team?
I think they had a good chance.
The other four teams, I don't know.
I don't, I usually refrain from making those kinds of predictions about,
until I see kind of the semifinals because of what you said earlier,
which is so many of these teams that are listed on the leaderboards now
either won't compete as a team or they'll have, you know,
all the relevant members of the team will compete individual or they're missing some of maybe one of
their best players is injured this right now but they'll be back later on in the season there's
just too many variables um switching back um to the uh individual men in the open how did roman do
are are we are we still i know after he finished like fifth in
asia whatever roman's never he's never really done that well in the open the couple years where it
was valuable to be the national champion he seems to try a little bit harder because there was more
on the line which is what people like you want to see but i really i think roman's in the uh group
of people who is not interested in the open and 138 is still fantastic oh this is look
at this guy martin nielsen someone wrote me about him holy shit i got a note on him
is that's i think that's a master's athlete yeah someone was telling me that this guy's
as good as fucking dan bailey and james hobart you know about this guy searching in the men's
35 to 39 yeah he's up in the i think he's fifth in the men's 35 to 39
division wow how is that and you know what's crazy is you go to his instagram account i don't know
if i sent you the link well when we get to the women you'll see there's a 35 year old woman or
maybe even 40 year old woman that finished like fourth in the world or something holy cow oh yeah
this guy's just a boozer this guy just sits around and drinks all day.
What country was that?
Denmark.
Wow.
Are we sure this is the same guy?
Are we sure?
Okay.
There's some work.
Wait, is this the guy with the Jeep from last week?
The G-Wagon.
The G-Wagon.
Oh, man.
This guy parties.
Hey, wait. He's still waiting on that T-shirt design by the way yeah oh yes yes hey wait you know what's funny too those are i wonder if those are like twelve thousand dollar bottles
right there like some people show fancy cars and like tons of girls and bikinis around them i
wonder if that guy's just just strutting his with alcohol. All right. For whoever DMed me and said to look at Martin, I'm checking that off the list.
I did it.
Okay?
I see who's in the chat right now.
Your friend?
Who?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I do see him.
There he is.
Where's Rich?
I think the phrase is, what's Rich doing?
Wait, what would Rich do?
I think. phrase is, what's Rich doing? Wait, what would Rich do? I think Rich is on vacation, so I don't know if he's even watching.
You can say anything you want now because no one's going to pay attention to the show for the next 10 minutes.
They're going to just bomb Dave here.
I didn't even know Dave knew how to use a computer.
Okay.
Is there anything specifically here?
Oh, how did Fikowski end up?
We were seeing some crazy numbers from him too the first two weeks.
I'm curious too.
Let's search his name.
I don't know.
Caleb, do you know that guy, Brent Fikowski?
Can you pop him up?
Make some noise on your keyboard. You know what you need? You need a fake keyboard. Thank you.
Even a fake keyboard, so whenever I just click on your picture, you can just start tapping it out.
Someone's asking, that's a good question. Someone's saying, did we talk about – there were rumors last week that Fikowski might have an injury.
Did we get confirmation on that?
No, not a confirmation.
Is that fake news or not?
I'm not too sure.
There he is, 992.
Oh, he's pretty good.
Okay.
So this is a guy who took – he took the last week more seriously, right?
I mean, that's just obvious.
Or he's not injured.
I have no idea.
I really don't know what to make of this.

I honestly think he may have done just
really bad in the first workout to to be honest with you no by the way it looks dude he's a top
three games athlete this guy no i don't know i mean no i mean because 953 really isn't that bad
on that workout and then 534 is i mean i that's good. So I just think he did really bad in the first week.
I could be wrong.
And he may just not care that much.
Yeah, that's what I'm going with.
I'm going with something's wrong or he didn't give a shit.
Brian, I thought you were good with the Canadians.
I thought, like, you had just a red phone.
I could ask it, but I'm just – I'm not worried about it.
I told you week one, and I told you week two,
and I'll tell you week three.
Let's see how he does in the quarterfinals.
I think he'll be fine.
And as long as he gets to compete in the live semifinal,
he'll be a favorite to make it to the games.
Yeah, just like you should just repost what Sarah Sigmund wrote.
The open doesn't matter to you.
The open doesn't matter to Brian Friend.
The open doesn't matter to Sarah Sigmund's daughter.
It did matter to me, and I am very sad about how it ended up for me. And the open doesn't matter to you the open doesn't matter to brian friend the open doesn't matter to sarah sigma's daughter it didn't matter to me and i am very sad about how it ended up for me
and the open doesn't matter to brent fikowski even brian isn't interested
on why brent fikowski did bad because the open doesn't fucking matter
maybe maybe maybe maybe brent had diarrhea that seems to be the favorite excuse of athletes um how how so and we also talked um both weeks about
um the gentleman from mayhem who was in 13th how did he finish up it's amazing that he got
knocked off the front page charles uh coran is that am i pronouncing his name right, Caleb? I'm not sure. Hey, did you watch him do the workout, Angelo, this week?
Yes.
Oh, look at that.
And who else watched?
Everybody, I think.
I think a lot of people.
Like gathered around and were like, okay, buddy, let's see how you do.
Man, the pressure must have been on.
I think he redid it. I think he did better a redo i'm not yeah i think he redid it and uh and he would just that would just be amazing if they go okay last week at the open
we got top heat tyler rich charles let's go well we were we didn't have anybody to do the youtube
video and uh everyone's like well who are we gonna get to do i was like i mean
let's just have charlie do it i mean he's he's gonna we might win the open why don't we have
him do it and they're like that's a great idea and so did he do it i don't do it oh so if we
went to the mayhem youtube channel you can see that dude do it you can see that dude yeah it's
on youtube yeah yeah oh that's awesome hey can we him? I want to see him because every time I see his avatar, I picture him naked.
Oh, that's him?
He's a fucking man child.
Wow.
How old is this guy?
Twelve.
Twelve?
Yeah.
That's crazy.
Also, he's on the Mayhem Leaderboard.
Yeah, I'm not sure how that happened, but here we are.
How do you think of this guy?
This guy looks like he fell out of a fucking log cabin
up in the mountains and all he does is fight bears look at this fucking guy now it all makes sense
all right all right all right um anyone else um are we tripping on all three panchic brothers in
the top 50 we got spencer at 28 um uh we got samuel quant at 25 sam dancer at 23 any anything weird in here wow say you said
sam dancer at 23 yeah i know that's better this week wow that's awesome why where he was lower
than that last week in the rankings overall dude this is this is yeah this is a really really
impressive performance uh for him.
But he told me at Guadalupe and he's told a bunch of people since then, like this is his season.
He wants to go for it in the Masters division.
And he's sending a statement to those guys early on that he's in good shape.
Hey, who's the George guy in the UK?
Zach George?
Yeah, Zach George.
How did he do?
I'm trying to get him on the show.
He won't respond to my DMs.
How did he do?
He's yoked, right?
He's a big old jacked.
Yeah, yeah.
Gorilla.
Silverback is what he calls himself.
How did he do?
There's so many Georges.
There's this Willie George.
There's John George.
What's this guy's name?
Zach George?
What's the guy's name?
Zach George.
What's the guy's name in the UK?
Z-A-C-K, I guy's name? Zach George. What's the guy's name? What's the guy's name in the UK?
Z-A-C-K, I believe.
Zach.
Zach George.
And that's his last name?
Yeah, Zach George.
Yeah.
Wow, he's fit.
Okay, so we kind of have a Fikowski thing here. Not as extreme.
But he got better every week.
It is kind of extreme.
7-18, 4-29, 17th.
Jeez, look at that dude's body.
Look at his lats.
Hey, what do those numbers mean?
How tall is he?
I have no idea.
A centimeter means nothing to me.
That's probably like 6'1".
And that means – and he's probably about, what, 1'2", 12-ish?
Yeah, something like that.
Wow, he's huge. And's crossfit bfg it
should be bfd but whatever you name your own gym if you want five nine oh so he's not he's not super
tall but wow he's 210 or 15 pounds at five nine that's huge oh that's it he he looks like a um
he looks like a professional athlete like some dude dude who just stumbled into CrossFit off an NFL team.
All right.
Anything else?
I didn't see Noah Olsen on here.
How did Noah do?
He's in like 40th, maybe a little higher than that.
He is?
I don't see him.
Am I wrong? I mean, he crushes. he is i don't see him am i wrong
i mean he crushes last two weeks 108 though wow he crushed last two weeks but
how about this this brute team how are they doing in general um with matt torres out of naples are
they i keep seeing all these are all guy people we've had on the show and I keep seeing their names
all over. Is that the new...
Are they the new...
Let's see.
They had a very impressive open.
Let's see
how it continues to go. I think that
Phil Toon and Dallin Pepper are...
They'd be two
of the 20 men from North America that I would pick to make
the games right now. And James Sprague is probably in the next 20 guys
um doesn't mean he can't make it but like
those guys are really good james sprague beat bjorgvin carl
gudmundson how the fuck is that oh because the open doesn't matter that's
right uh ricky garr, 26th.
Janikowski, 19th.
Jason Hopper, 16th. Good on him.
35th, 30th, and 83rd.
Who are the three?
Oh, how did Taylor Self do?
He's in the top 50 still.
He is?
Where's he at?
Is he in the top 50?
I swear I just saw his name somewhere.
Maybe he just missed out.
Last question, unless you guys want to say something
before we go over to the girls.
I am seeing that Samuel Cornwallier and Rich Froney Jr.
are both in the top 50 and they're on a team.
Does any other team in the world have two dudes in the top 50?
Two dudes in the top 50, two dudes in the top 50?
Probably not.
No.
So that's looking good for that team.
That's a good team. A team with as long as they pick good girls.
You know what?
There's,
there is one team that possibly does.
Let me see here.
Of course, you have to go to their profiles.
There's a bunch of Spanish guys that have been doing well.
Three of them are in the top 50.
And Spain in general has been having some pretty strong performances
the last couple of years.
So that's the only other team that could potentially.
Jesus, Herrera, Fernandez, Mark, Carmona.
Wow, these guys got names.
Why do they get three names? Mark Mark Carmona. Wow, these guys got names. Why do they get three names?
Mark Carmona, San...
Yeah, they got three guys in the top 50 from Spain.
San Andrew.
And you think...
And then Anoli Akai.
That guy's Spanish?
Oh, he's got his picture in all fucked up.
His picture in all cock-eyed.
Okay.
And so you think maybe two of those guys might be on a
team maybe i don't know i just i've been noticing the past year that uh spain has seems to be
producing a lot of athletes that are very good in this style of testing yeah there is a guy over
there um follow on instagram he he's he looks like mr yeah mr weak or something
yeah he looks like a fitness model i think i i hope he speaks english i want to get him on the
show i think i think i sorted by oh yeah in europe alone there's like they have like five or six guys
in the top 25 they've got like they've got like 10 of the top 50 guys are from Spain or maybe even more.
Like it's crazy.
And are the women putting out like that too over there?
There's some good women.
There's one who's in ninth in Europe, one who's in 19th, one who's in 23rd,
one who's in 40th.
And the 40th is probably the best one actually.
How do you do, Sevan? I do i do good i do good thank you for asking um all right
should we cruise over to the women um you didn't want to ask how angelo and i did this week uh
guys save that for the last at the very last right after we go stop going live i asked how you guys
did let's uh let's do the women and then and then and then
we'll um we'll screw around hey angelo did you have you seen any women do the men's weights of
this workout no why i'm just curious it would be crazy like i mean you see those people it'd be it'd be pretty
funny if you came on here and we're like yeah taylor taylor williamson i saw her do it and
she if she would have done it and ranked in the men's open she would have gotten 47th and we'd
be like holy shit i mean she can do it yeah i mean both of those both of those girls can do it
no but i did not see anyone do that no yeah brian do you know anything
about that like um what's the what's my my girl's name who's not coming to the games um uh anganese
what's my name yeah and it like seems like something she might try to do
have you seen any women do the men's weight anyone doing that shit on instagram
no but maybe we'll get a heavy 22.3 at the games this year.
Oh, that would be cool.
That'd be cool.
That'd be cool.
You like that workout?
A heavy version of that at the games?
They did heavy 17.5.
Why not?
And the women's times were very good with the men's weights.
They would have to change the double unders. It could not
stay the same at the games. That is
embarrassing. Is there
a 70 to 75? There isn't.
If there was, I would
try to... I can't even beat the fucking women
at that age.
Basically, what he just admitted is that his
mom beats him in most workouts. Yeah.
My mom has better form than me, that's
for sure okay uh the greatest living crossfitter is mallory o'brien
well you won the open she won the open oh right right difference i um i like it i. Here's why I like it. She is basically – this is – when Dave used to introduce people like Rich or Tia or Matt maybe even, he used to say, won their last 13 events, hasn't ever taken worse than second place, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, everything they enter.
And I just think Mal O'Brien is doing that.
Like she basically has just got her pocket knife out and she's just taking notches on her bedpost.
And I think she did this on purpose.
I wonder if I'd ever get a chance to interview her.
Is she of age yet?
No one can be on the show unless they're 21.
How old is she?
18.
Oh, shit.
Three more years.
But there's a lot of drugs and alcohol in the show um yeah she's incredible yeah i i i'm do we know if she's repeating the workouts do
we know anything about her i doubt it i doubt she's repeating them you did really
that's just the main thing who are too cool for school angelo what
i think she's just really fit i think she's probably doing them once
and she's really fit it's kind of that's kind of matt style so i would say that's
probably what um what she's doing
brian do you have any insight
not really she had an amazing open last year. She did great in the quarterfinals.
These styles of tests are very, very good for her.
But what we found out last year was she was great at the Granite Games,
and she did exceptionally well at the Games for her first year.
So now if you start looking at, like Dave talks about,
the last several competitions that she showed up to,
there's not really anything unimpressive about what she's done.
So I'm more surprised actually by Tia's performance,
given what she's been doing the last three months than Matt's.
Meaning it hasn't been CrossFit focused.
She just rolled out of bed and took second place in the World Wide Open.
Yeah, I mean, I really have no idea.
But what I had heard is that she'd been very doing very little crossfit specific training and that she
gains a significant amount of weight to try to excel in that sport significant i mean 10 to 20
pounds something like that and so i wouldn't have expected her to have a great open year i don't
think it's that important for her to have a great open year but the fact that she did this and won two of the three workouts is is more surprising to me than than malice performance it is really it is really
impressive and it's kind of a trip that she you could win two workouts and not yeah and not win
the open it's kind of crazy you you almost you almost could like start arguing that she beat mal
well here's here's the thing.
Prior to the Open starting, I told you that usually on the women's side,
you need somewhere between 25 and 50 points to win the Open.
And usually on the men's side, you need somewhere between 80 and 120 points to win the Open.
Why do we see people winning the Open with 5 points and 25 points respectively?
It's because the test sucked.
Sorry, sorry. I mean, it's because there was It's because the test sucked. I mean, sorry, sorry.
I mean, it's because there was no diversity to the test.
Oh, Caleb, can you find a synonym for diversity?
It's true.
I'm triggered.
I'm triggered.
There was no, look, a lot of times in the open,
there's a wall ball rowing workout.
There's a heavy lifting workout.
There's a high skill, high volume gymnastics workout.
There's something that if you're really good
at the capacity tests, you might not also be good at that. Or there'll be
a lot of people in the open who excel at that thing that bump you down and inflate the scores
for the best people. So there weren't a great assortment of tests. There weren't a great
variety of heterogeneity for the test. Heterogeneity. Yeah, that's a good one.
Anyway, these are three capacity tests.
Mal O'Brien is elite in the women's field for capacity,
just like Saxon Panchik is, and that's why they won the Open.
Is that who won the Open in the men?
I didn't even look at that.
What?
Yes, we did.
Why isn't that sticking in my head?
Saxon Panchik won the Open.
Wow. Yeah. I think that it's an okay sorry i think it's no no no go how come the one time angelo talks he freezes there's not the bandwidth for his mouth to move
try again angelo hey i'm back okay go again i'm back. Okay, go again. I'm back. Can you hear me?
Yes.
I said I think overall the test sucked,
but we're still going to get the right people to quarterfinals. So whatever.
Hopefully quarterfinals is better.
Hey, is everyone always going to say the tests suck?
No, definitely not.
No, it's not every year.
Right.
Last year I think was actually pretty good.
We like three before we dig into the women?
We're okay with three?
Depends on what the three are.
Right.
Okay.
So it can be done with three is what you're saying by saying that.
Not these three.
Right.
Okay.
Fine.
We need one more year of three before we dig into that.
Each of the workouts on their own was very good, very painful, challenging.
But when I look at them in totality and I see that there is one monostructure element included in the entire test of fitness here, and it's 108 double unders, then I don't, what happened to CrossFit's tenants for programming
balance. There's no monostructural test. When I look at the gymnastics, there are six tests,
six movements out of a total of 10. So 60% of the test is gymnastics, but of the 330, no,
388 reps that the average person did, or that people would have to do of gymnastics in this
workout, 33 of them are to be considered high skill movements. So there's no
high skill gymnastics tested basically. And then you look at the weightlifting and it's basically
half of the entire test of weightlifting was deadlifting 225. And the other tests were a 50
pound dumbbell and the thrusters. It's just, it's just weird. It's like, it's like they forgot about
all of the, all of the tenants of programming balance that they outline in all of their documents historically.
There's no Olympic lifting.
There's no diversity of time domain testing.
There's no balance of monostructural weightlifting and gymnastics.
There's no heavy implement.
I'm just like I'm really, really confused about how they're going to sell.
Like whatever the meaning of the Open is now, I don't understand.
It clearly doesn't value the core tenets of programming that CrossFit has forever prided itself on.
Maybe this was Dave's way of leaving a turd in the punch bowl.
Okay, bye guys. Here you go.
Well, I would love to ask Dave, you know, if these were in fact his workouts, what was the thought process here?
And my mind tells me that the open is now, like what we understood the Open to be is no
longer what the Open is. This is the year that's communicating to us that it's just a capacity
test. Yes, there'll be little sprinkles of skill here and whatever here, but basically, regardless
of what it is, we're going to get the people that matter to the quarterfinals. And now let's see
what the quarterfinals testing looks like this year when this is what I think the Open is going
to look like going forward. So now I want to see what the quarterfinals is going to look like yeah um uh
this person says brian getting spicy now you know what's funny too is i wanted to close my eyes and
and because i felt like i was reading a morning chalk up article because that was like he was
given the information right there that was good that was really good brian okay thank you that
was solid um so so we have these we have these two
on the top uh it's obvious that we're fortunate um as as fans of the crossfit games of the crossfit
community to have these people you have mal o'brien who won it and then brian saying man
it's just as impressive what tia did that's cool that we have competition levels this high
then we got hayley adams in third place laurie Laurie Clement in fourth, Brooke Wells in fifth, Emma McQuaid in sixth.
Seventh is Alexis Raptus.
Tied for seventh is Ellie Turner.
Ninth is Andrea Solberg.
Tenth is Jamie Simmons.
Jamie Simmons, that's the Jamie Green.
You're Jamie Green.
And look there, look there, by the way.
Three oceanic women in the top 10.
They only get three spots to the games.
How many examples do we have to have of how big of a problem the selection process is for athletes going to the games before CrossFit is going to actually acknowledge it and do something about it?
Dude, you're going to be elected prime minister or whatever they got in Australia.
You love that.
That's good.
That's a good point.
Matilda Garns in 11th.
One of Brian's all-time favorites he would put in the Hall of Fame if there was a Hall of Fame.
In 12th, Christy Arama O'Connell.
Oh, I thought you were going all the way to 14th with that wind-up.
13th, Christoph Horvath's chick, Gabriela Magawa.
14th, the great beacon
of moral hope, Danny Spiegel.
Fifteenth, Addison
Desrosiers.
All the way down to eighteenth, we get Annie Thor's
daughter. Twentieth, Amanda Barnhart.
Emma Tall, twentymental, 27.
You're going to really offend some people in the comments.
There were like three or four comments that were really proud of Seher Kaya
finishing 20th out of Turkey here, and you just skipped right over.
I apologize, Seher.
I apologize, Seher.
Congratulations.
Amazing.
Amazing.
Who's the youngest person in this top 50?
Amazing. Amazing. Who's the youngest person in this top 50?
Well, I mean, probably Mal O'Brien, but there might be someone else.
Annika Greer, is she older than me? She's one year older.
Oh, Sayer, if you could, if you have some pool in Turkey. Aaliyah Soren's 18. Continue. What do you want about Turkey?
Sayer, Kaya, if you have some pool in turkey could you please um suggest to your premier whatever you got there to open the borders
with armenia and stop selling weapons to our enemies i appreciate it love you girl thank you
for any assistance you can give is olivia kersetter still in the top 50 or no no dang oh good question
yeah so it might be mal will she get kicked out of the gym for that?
Wow, 69.
Who?
Oh, and hey, going to Brian's point,
he's saying that there's three from the oceanic region,
and that's all they get for the games,
but we know who's taking one of those,
and she's down in 43rd.
Right.
And her name's Kara Saunders.
Is she going to come up there and be like,
excuse me, i'm taking
one of those yeah she is yeah right i don't know what you want me to tell you like as long like
unless there's an injury and if tia is forced to compete there which she should be uh because
that's what the rules say then you got tia jamie and cara and I'm sorry, Ellie Turner, and I'm sorry if some of these other women
in Oceania, by the way, Marnie Sykes and Madeline Schelling
are both very, very good.
They competed on a team last year.
I don't think they are this year.
You still have Maddie Sturt in the equation.
There's a lot of women from Oceania that are good enough to be at the games,
and they will not have a chance in hell against those three women.
Hey, fair enough.
Brian, look at 48.
Wow.
Rug.
No.
Does no matter.
Does no matter.
Sada, Sigmund's daughter.
Doesn't fucking matter.
The open.
And she's in 48.
That tickles me.
And I really love who she tied with.
One of the show's favorites even i can
barely say her name sydney mickle mckaylson seven how's your memory mckaylson i like her she's cool
as shit uh wait sydney's young hold on brian i want to answer that question uh sydney's only oh
she's 22 all right she's a grown-ass woman she can come on the show she's over she's over 21 um my memories it depends it depends
what are you gonna ask me ask angelo and then if i know i'll answer and steal the show
i didn't i just i might have miscounted here but by my count there are 16 north american women in
the top 50 and 23 european women in the top 50. And the European women get half as many game spots as the North American
women.
It's outrageous.
It's ridiculous.
And it's so frustrating.
The cross refuses to acknowledge and that actually competitive performance
on the field of play should matter.
And that we want the best people at the games.
But Brian,
how are you?
Do you reconcile this argument?
I want to agree with you with the fact that the Open doesn't test shit.
Let's wait until the quarterfinals then where all the workouts are the same and we'll do the same comparison.
Yeah, yeah, good, good, good, good, good.
I like that.
How many workouts in the quarterfinals?
Last year there were five.
Okay.
And we don't know how many this year?
No.
I'm going to ask you the same question um that i asked
you at the end of the men i'll start with it this time uh any of you a man or a woman
or i think it's gp are you the small 0.001 that's both um what um or neither
no no that's not an option, is it?
Or something else.
Yeah, everything's an option.
Whatever you want.
Are there any two women on here?
Oh, where's Nistler and Taylor?
Nistler's in the top 50.
You skipped over her as well.
Oh, I did?
Where is she?
31st.
Attagirl.
Taylor Williamson never does well in the open, and that's not a problem at all, obviously.
Yeah, let's just look at her real quick.
And in the meantime, I'm going to ask you the question, are there any two women who are on a team together?
Oh, how about those Swedish girls do?
Don't they have a mega team?
Swedish or Norway?
Where's Kristen Holta from?
Norway.
Yeah, the Norwegian girls.
There's a bunch of Norwegian girls that do well in the open, but they're not the ones that are on that team.
No, no, they're not in the top 50.
How about these two women here, Emily Lundberg and Maria Longfors?
Yeah, Sweden has a lot of good women as well.
I don't know if either of them are doing a team.
The top team from Sweden has probably come out of CrossFit Nordic,
and they're Antoine Falk-K has probably come out of crossfit nordic and they're
uh antonio antonio fault koletsky and anna vigadel and uh they're not going to be up here that high
but they are very good team athletes are you surprised um helga doter didn't do better
no she's fine yeah i mean she did do fine i just kind of picture her as kind of like the same kind
of athlete as uh ramos i bet you actually
let's i bet you if we look at terry's um profile that her consistency is very very yeah all of her
open performances are basically between 29th and 80th in her career 30th and 80th all the time
and then she comes to the semifinals of regionals and she's always finishing right around fifth and
then she comes to the games and she's always finishing.
Well,
she's now has a very diverse spread at the games from,
but she's usually kind of in the middle of the pack.
The last couple of years,
she's been better.
Any two,
what's the highest back to the question,
any two women who are in the top 50,
who are on a team together and who's the,
who's the highest finishing team woman.
Do we know?
Oh,
Annie's 18th.
I recognize the name Edison Desrosiers, but I'm not sure from where.
I feel like she might do a team.
Yeah, Annie.
Katlyn Van Zyl and her husband and another couple, they were, I think, sixth at the games last year from CrossFit Urban Energy.
They're running it back this year.
Chloe Galvin-David in 25th. She'll compete on CrossFit Pro in Montreal.
They will have a good team, probably a better team than they had last year. They were in the top 10
at the games. Brittany Weiss is on CrossFit Invictus' top team.
Andrea Nistler's with Mayhem.
I'm not sure about that girl, Svetlana Veselova, if she's
part of the top team in Russia over there or not.
So there's,
there's definitely some team athletes in here.
Carolyn Prevo took 34th.
Look at her go girl.
Yeah.
I'll bet you that.
Russia's flag muted.
Yeah.
Is that just me?
Is that mine?
Wow.
No, I was curious about this yeah okay oh that's what that white is that's like wait that doesn't look like that hey and that you can't have a white
square you gotta have a black square that's yeah come on yeah come on man everyone knows that
wow well my the two that impressed me the most and I'm sure they're not going to impress you guys the most,
but as Sarah Sigmund's daughter and Brooke Wells, those are the, um, I, it,
it warms my heart to see them both doing so well.
It's crazy to me that Brooke Wells can, I mean, maybe she's not,
but that she can push, uh,
till the wheels fall off the bus after an injury like that.
I would just think that you'd be freaked out to all get out.
How's Haley doing?
Do you have any insights for us on Haley, Angelo?
She's fit.
She's very fit.
That's the insight.
I don't know anything else.
Ed, did she do any of these? I assume she didn't do any of these twice.
No.
Was she happy with her finish?
I think so, yeah.
happy with her finish uh i think so yeah um brian anything you want to say about any of these gals and any concerns you have anyone that you're like uh-oh like we looked at uh um fukowski and uh who
is the other person we looked at who is like in crazy eye zach george i don't know well
one more talking about tonight people we looked at tonight? Yeah, I can't remember.
I don't know.
Any women that were concerned
about? Any women who did just really
bad in the open that you're like, huh, what's this?
Can we pull up Emma Carey?
Oh, yeah.
And so she's with the
Brute team that we talked about, right?
That's like all these young, amazing
people under Matt Torres.
Yeah, and people were very concerned about her last week.
Obviously, you can see her range of performances here.
I think that that was strategic.
That's my guess.
That second workout.
Just managing the back injury from Dubai, not overdoing it there,
just getting to quarterfinals.
And I would guess that we'll see a different story in quarterfinals.
Yeah, that is interesting.
When do quarterfinals?
Oh, Caleb, did we ever find out when the games start,
how many days away we are from the games?
How did Sam Briggs do?
Well, pretty well.
She was in the top 30 for Europe at least.
Do you do that, Brian?
Do you break it up by country and look a lot?
Yeah.
Is that your preferred way to look at it when you're studying?
Yeah, because it's not relevant.
The worldwide leaderboard is not relevant yet to me. I want to see kind of how things are shaping up in each continent.
And then, you know, because now I understand at quarterfinals that only 60 people in Europe can make it through.
So I have a spreadsheet I've been working on of, you know, all the people who made it through last year and then the ones that won't be in the field this year.
And then I look at the next ones and I try to see if there's some people
that I expect to maybe make that jump this year.
146, August 7th.
That's the end of the games.
Yeah, it's 142.
I just did the math too.
It's Wednesday, right?
142 days until the CrossFit Games begin.
Daniel Brandon is sitting in 56th place.
And she did really well this weekend.
She took fifth.
Is that no surprise?
I mean, I wouldn't have – I would have expected to do well in this workout.
I don't know if I would have picked her as a top
five finisher for this workout
and and Bailey
rails in 55th place
I'm over on pay okay and Olivia
Kerstetter actually did damn
good six season 69th holy
cow crazy
yeah crazy oh my goodness
she's 16 Wow. Crazy. Yeah. Crazy. Oh my goodness.
She's 16.
It's nuts. And look at Kelly Baker. Holy cow. Right below is Kelly Baker.
Has she ever been to the games? Kelly Baker.
She has been on teams never as an individual. Is she going teams again?
I think so. Yeah, I think so.
She went to the games in 2016 with CrossFit Parallax.
Sydney Wells in 76th place.
Mm-hmm.
Does she have a chance of making it to the games?
Now, that's a good question.
Finally, an hour and 14 minutes in, and I got that's a good question.
Meaning I don't have a really good answer for that question I don't know you know she's one of those that
you know considering this short amount of time that she's been
trying to compete in CrossFit had a really impressive year last year
but didn't but it wasn't really close to making it so
can she make that big of a jump in one season?
Maybe, but I think that a lot of it's going to depend for her
on the draw of the field of North American women she has to go against
and probably the program.
Because I would imagine that there's some things that she's really,
really good at and some things that she's still probably not at the level
that you need to be to make the games.
But if she avoids those in whatever semiffinal she goes to then maybe she has a chance
damn i really hate that answer when it's up to the programming well we already talked about that
uh katrin david's doter 138th place she has a 136th finish and by the way it's always been like
that because we said we've we've talked about it In 2013, Katrin was fit enough to make the games if Legolas rope climbs didn't show up, but they did.
In 2014, Sam Briggs was the fittest person on earth, but she didn't make the games because of the handstand walk event.
So programming has always been a factor.
The thing is that in those years, everyone had to prove that they could handstand walk.
Everyone had to prove that they could Legolas rope climb.
It wasn't random that you maybe had to prove it here and got away with it over there.
Any other examples besides those two?
None that are as good or on top of my head.
Maddie Sturt, that's someone's boyfriend, right?
Jay Crouch.
Jay Crouch.
And she's really the games athlete right out of the two i
mean he went he's went one well maddie had made it four years in a row but now she's in that
oceanic region that we talked about where she's got basically zero percent chance to make it jay
crouch on the other hand i would consider to be the fittest guy in australia right now holy shit
yeah what a mess who can you talk to over there? Over where?
At CrossFit HQ.
Me? I don't know.
They know these things. They definitely know these things.
I don't know why they are making these decisions.
And I want to believe that they're thinking about changing it or have some.
But then I hear Justin Berg talk when he gets interviewed by Chase Ingram.
And I'm just like, what is going on? When, when he taught, you mean when Chase has
asked him that online and you haven't got it, you haven't, you don't hear an answer that makes sense
to you now. He's like, look, look at the surge in Europe. Look at how many people are registering
for the open in Europe. I'm like, that's, what's going to push you over the top to, to acknowledge
the fact that that's where the most women should be coming from, game spots.
Not the fact that they've been dominating for the last half decade.
Hey, well, that could be fixed if they took the top 50 in the open who did well in the open, automatically went to the games.
Just saying.
Bethany Shadburn, 107th place.
Laura Horvath, 103rd place.
Emma Lawson, 102.
Emma Lawson was in the first week of the Open, right?
No, second week of the Open against Laura Horvath.
That's who that is.
Yeah.
Any thoughts about these finishes or no?
This is just the way it is.
What do you mean I mean yeah like
not a big deal open doesn't matter that's
what I mean like I want I want
to be like holy shit catcher took 138
but it's not holy shit it's like good finish
girl good job you're in it to win it
they did what they needed
to do Carleen Matthews 38 years years old, took 115th place.
Oh, who's the girl?
So you're saying there was a lady who is on page one who's over 40?
No, 35 years old, fourth place overall in the Open.
And I don't really know much about her.
Lori Clement.
Someone might have sent me some information about her, and if so, I apologize that I've forgotten it.
But this is the type of person that we had talked about the first two weeks, and I was like, let me see how she does when a different test comes along.
But again, this is a capacity test.
They're just sprinting through this workout.
for the just sprinting through this workout.
I'm looking at her profile and I don't really see anything
that would have led me to think
that she was going to have this kind of an open.
So I don't really know what to say about Lori Clement
except for incredible job.
Can we troll her?
Can we look at her Instagram
and creep on her a little bit?
On Lori Clement?
Alex, but the open doesn't matter.
Nice family, by the way.
Congratulations.
Three kids.
You're fucking doing it, dude.
Doing it.
Caleb, can we look at this lady, Laurie Clement?
You've never seen her before, Brian?
I guess you can click on it.
No, she was on a team, a French team, at least listed on a French team.
But, no, I don't know her.
What do these
numbers mean under the badges it says crossfit open five that means it's her fifth open
and she's been to the quarterfinals once the semifinals once and the regionals once okay
i can't see her still can i see a bigger picture of her I want to see if I recognize her just from years around. Keep going.
Maybe like a close-up of her promoting some product, like of her face.
Their team got seventh at the semifinal last year, I mean.
Oh, that one right there with the dudes.
Oh, they did?
Oh.
Look at the glasses.
Is she going? That's con porter right there some amazon tattoos on them holy cow um so she's she's a team athlete brian is that what you're
saying sorry yeah but she also was first place in europe for all of women and first place in the i
think in the world for um her age group so maybe she wants to do masters this year all right beat up on hobart angela looks so bored we can see the
reflection of porn hub in the people's pupils uh no i'm not that born i'm actually having fun alright good okay back to this women's leaderboard
Brian
did we go over oh no okay
so let's do this question same with the
women that we did with the men let's look at
these top 15
let's look at these top 15 and who's
going to make the games
and who's going to be top 10 at the game so let's say who's going to make the games and who's going to be top 10 at the games.
So let's say who's going to make the games first.
Okay, ready?
Mal O'Brien, Tia Toomey, Hayley Adams.
Okay.
Brooke Wells, Asterix.
Ooh.
Emma McQuaid.
Okay.
Alexis Raptus.
Okay.
Ellie Turner, no, because she's in Australia, but she should be at the games. Okay. Jamie Simmons. Okay. Alexis Raptus. Okay. Ellie Turner, no, because she's in Australia, but she should be at the games.
Okay.
Jamie Simmons.
Okay.
Possibly Matilda Garns, very difficult.
Who?
Matilda Garns in 11th.
She's very good, but very difficult out of Europe.
Okay, let me see her too.
I need to judge her and see if she – can I see Matilda Garns?
How old is she?
Matilda.
You can't go to the games with the name Matilda.
Matilda's like a sesame seed.
She's really good.
I think she actually does have a chance in Europe this year.
Let's click her profile real quick.
I want to see what she's done in the past.
Sorry, Brian.
She had a 35th, a 10th, and a 42nd.
She's from.
She almost made it last year.
Look at her semifinal finish last year.
11th and last year's Open also.
She beat Kristen Holt in the Open two years in a row.
Semifinals go down.
7th in the German Throwdown.
5th in the Last Chance Qualifier.
Almost made it on two different regards.
So she's got a chance with Annie and Kristen out of the equation over there in Europe.
Let me see her body again.
She looks like one of those little girls too.
She looks like she is a strength or issue.
That's kind of hard to tell.
So she's a,
she,
so she's a team girl.
That's her team.
No,
no,
she,
she almost made it in both semifinals and last chance qualifier qualifier as
an individual last year.
And I think she has a good chance in Europe this year,
but not a guarantee like all the other women I listed.
Christy Aramu-O'Connell, Gabby Magawa, and Dani Spiegel.
Okay, sorry, sorry.
Matilda, Christy, Gabby, and Dani.
Not Addison.
The ones I skipped over are Lori Clement,
uh,
Addison,
and Andrea Solberg.
Okay.
So just to,
just to remind you guys.
Oh,
nice,
nice Caleb.
Uh,
so for the men in the top 16,
we took out a rich froning.
So top,
let's say without rich,
the top 15,
you had Saxon,
Justin,
Phil,
um,
Dallin, Jay Crouch, Adler, and Jason.
So half of them, you're guessing, will make it to the games.
And the women, you have Mal, Tia, Haley,
Willie Brook out for now, Emma, Alexis, Jamie Simmons,
Matilda, Christia, Ramo, Gabby, and Danny Spiegel.
You have 10.
I would,
I would,
I would say Brooke,
the last tricks for Brooke is that I don't know what's going to happen when she has to snatch a heavy barbell.
Okay.
Fair.
Okay.
And,
and,
um,
of these women,
how many of them do you think are going to finish top 10 at the games?
Can you pull up that list so he can see it,
uh,
Caleb on his screen?
I have it here.
Okay.
Top 10 at the games.
Of those, top 15.
I can just go through and ask.
Mal, Tia, and Haley, yes.
Okay.
If Brookwells makes it to the games, yes.
Okay.
Gabby, yes.
And then possibly Jamie and Christie.
I would say Jamie, Christie, and Emma McQuaid are the maybe top 10.
Yep, yep, yep.
The reason maybe is because I don't know about Sarah Sigmund's daughter yet.
I don't know about – I want to believe Kara Saunders is the top 10 but i i don't know these other girls like these are good like um emma mcquade is is still
getting better uh so it's tough at that kind of the last three spots of the top 10 for the women
is pretty tough i think um you would have uh mlk 524 zero you'd have to donate 52 to get that question answered
um and then i still can't promise he'll answer it um yeah where did my mom i don't think my mom did
the open this year she she did that's fucking blasphemy i told her not to give money to the
mothership hey um type in my mom's name. Let's do a little check on that.
Let's see what the hell, bro.
She better not.
Of these seven who you said are going to make it to the games of the men,
let's play that same game with the men.
Which ones will make it to the top 10?
Saxon?
I think so.
Justin?
Yeah.
Phil Toon?
Probably not. Dallin Phil Toon? Probably not.
Dallin Pepper?
Probably not.
Jay Crouch?
No.
Jeffrey Adler?
Close.
Jason Hopper?
Close.
Okay.
So isn't that fascinating?
No, it's not fascinating at all.
This is exactly how it is every year, every season, every competition.
There's way more depth on the men's side,
and so the better women are always going to do better in these types of competitions.
They're going to filter to the top.
Well, it's not that the women did better.
It's that the Open is more, according to these predictions,
the Open is more a representation of who's also going to do well at the Games.
And I'll tell you this.
In Greg's world, it was limited in the games.
My mom says I didn't do the open.
Is that really a mom?
Yeah,
that is cool.
I will tell you this.
When,
when Greg was always so proud that the open so closely matched the games
that basically you could look at the open and be like, yeah, these are the best guys.
Greg was proud of that.
Yeah.
He was always very, very, very, very proud of that, that that worked out that way.
And you can't.
Is that why he designed the format for 2019 the way he did?
Oh, did he also think that a handful of tests, random tests with variable scoring systems and cutting half the field after each event would make for excitement that would heal the top 10 athletes getting to do the rest of the test at the end?
I'm taking these down. These are all things we'll talk about when we talk about when we come back and do the show on CrossFit Libtard on what happened to them when we go into details there we'll also uh i'll bring up these other two things 2019 what was greg thinking and uh different scoring systems
um and so so basically it's not that the i don't think it's the depth of field
well it's the depth of field there are a hundred men who don't make the games every year that if
they did make the games would look no different than the last 10 men at the games.
Right.
I hear you on that.
But why would that change the predictive value of the open for who's going to do well at the games?
because basically what you're saying,
what we're saying is that the openness bed,
the open with these three workouts is that it gives you a better predictive value of who's going to do well at the,
at the games this year for the women than it does the men for the men.
We only have two.
Okay.
Regardless.
Okay.
Okay.
I see what you're saying.
Okay.
So you think that will change as the,
as the women,
um,
as women's field gets more depth,
if it does, if CrossFit's growing. Yeah. I think that will change as the women's field gets more depth, if it does, if CrossFit's growing?
Yeah, I think that – I've said this before.
I think that the evolution of fitness because of CrossFit for women has been more dramatic than men.
And therefore, there's still not as many women that are doing this at the same level or trying to do it at the same level as there are men.
Do we know how many men entered the Open versus how many women?
Is that a stat we know?
Just in the Open division, we could find out really quickly.
We could?
Yeah.
144,000 men, I think.
Not bad. Not bad. 144,000 men I think not bad not bad
this is not factoring in the divisions
that don't have to do the
main workout so if you're 55 plus
and if you're 15 or younger
that doesn't include those
ok
let's see if the leaderboard on the women's side
yeah there's probably
about 25 or 30,000 more men who registered than women in the open division.
And these things that we're talking about, the first thing that you said is because the women have less depth of field.
I guess you could make – you could turn that into empirical data, and you could prove that, and we could definitely prove the registration numbers.
This next thing I'm going to say you can't prove it's subjective but i what's interesting is i find the women's
competition more um appealing to me which is kind of weird because i don't know any other sports
where it's like that although there are some amazing ufc fighters thug rose is amazing to watch
oh yeah um but um you're a ufc fan angela i wouldn't say i'm a huge
fan i mean i know the main names though i know the big ones yeah that that they don't have a lot
of depth there either but when the good women do fight it's like holy shit but i guess that you
could say for some reason i want to say 10 p.m 7 say good night to heidi oh good night heidi
good night girl thanks for checking in.
I mean, I want to see Haley and Laura Horvat and Tia and Brooke Wells and Gabby and Katrin's daughter.
I want to see those girls get it.
I want to see someone chase Tia down.
And I don't know if I have that passion for the men.
How about you guys?
Would you guys have a preference over the men or the women's competition?
I mean, I like the men's competition.
I mean, I'm splitting hairs.
Maybe the men are a 9 and the women are a 10.
I mean, my opinion is biased. I like seeing the men because I can relate to it very easily.
As an athlete?
Yeah, yeah, because I wouldn't say that I'm super close and everything,
but I can kind of understand when I see them lift certain weights
or see them do certain movements, I can relate to how hard it is
or where they fatigue, stuff like that.
I can kind of watch that and understand them a lot better than the women.
The women seem like they're robots to me like some of them just don't get tired
i don't understand it that's a backhanded compliment if i ever heard one that's great
i so so if the women are competing like you take a p that's when you take a p break
or get a hot dog or something no no not necessarily no i like i like watching it because
uh it is crazy to watch just like
robots out there like like when i train with hayley like i don't it's the thing that stops
her from going faster is if the movements are far far away so like if her bike and her wall
ball are too far away that's the only reason it slows her down it's not it's not anything else
it's just the walk between movements hey is it is it can you fuck with people during workouts like if you if you and hayley are doing something and you guys run over to your wall balls and you
kicked her wall ball is that is that a legit or is that really fucked up is that like hey you've
crossed the boundary with her that's really fucked up she wouldn't like that but since the other guys
uh the other guys would probably like that she would i'd be
too afraid to do that i'll say that i'm too afraid to do that so okay that's interesting but like if
you and luke were going and you got off the rower and it was wall balls and you got there before him
you would kick his wall ball like 10 feet away yeah yeah yeah that'd be that'd be funny that's
awesome and the girls don't do that shit to each other no way no way way way too cutthroat
you know it's funny too it's i'll tell you i would much rather interview the men than the women
interviewing the women is scary there's exceptions of course terrifying i mean annie is was always
good no laura would never approach i would like be like five feet away and wait for her like the maybe she might signal me signal me over i'd never just like walk up to her fuck that seven puts on a
like a full bomb suit beforehand yes yes i'm telling you one year at the games when i was
doing the behind the scenes i just told my wife i'm like i can't interview the women i'm just too
scared you got to do it you got to do after the, Hey, Angelo, can you bring me your fire suit for the games this year?
I'm thinking of interviewing Laura.
Yeah.
Or just have Sam Briggs stand between us.
Sam, can you ask Laura a few questions for me?
Sam was always great, too.
Carl Saunders was great.
It's not that the other girls aren't great.
They just scare me.
It's like you said.
You don't kick their ball.
You don't fuck with them like that.
They're terrifying.
They're so intense. Intense is the word for it intense they're very intense
yep well said all right um how did you guys do in the open this week
angela first no angela first please uh i finished the workout in 529 um i fell on the ground and
rolled around for like 15 seconds it's a hilarious video it was one of the most most embarrassed things i've done uh why where
were you hurting you were just like like you had the wind knocked out you or and no i had i was
everywhere i was hurting everywhere it was i was really hurting bad all my whole body for like the
next hour like like vomitous like you didn't feel like yourself, like one of those.
Yeah. Like, like I had a migraine like immediately after I couldn't open my eyes too sunny,
like headache for a while. It was embarrassing. Absolutely embarrassing. But, uh, but my time was
okay. So I was, so I'm fine with it. Um, yeah, I think I did. This was a pretty fun workout.
I thought this workout was actually a decent test.
When I looked at it initially, I was afraid that it was not enough volume or maybe not enough weight.
And I think it ended up being a lot better test than I thought it was going to be.
Humble Angelo.
Brian, how was yours?
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, yes. uh brian how was yours oh no oh no it's terrible it was everything i had to they are yelling at you to go faster damn you go fucking low and like my legs aren't working you can tell my legs aren't
working by the way that i can't stand up without my arms when do you know you're gonna put the bar down there i i didn't so you actually you're like oh
shit the bars just leave like you so you don't that wasn't a decision all of a sudden the bar's
leaving so what happened my legs are so my legs were so just jello.
There was nothing left in my legs that I just started to fall backwards in mid squat and I couldn't save it.
So I just got you.
You can't even get up.
You can't even get up.
Oh, it's so bad.
You're like an old man.
Look at.
OK, let me see.
Oh, shit.
Look at Lukeke smiling he's
looking at someone else and like enjoying your pain i love it so uh the other night
then rich said right after he goes i have no idea how you got up and finished because i had two reps
still it still wasn't done because i have no idea you finished the last two reps i thought you were gonna have to quit the workout so you lost 10 seconds there at least
right you could so that was it was bad so you got a 529 so theoretically if you did it again
and you pulled your shit together you could have got closer to 5 5 5 15 yeah like so i i set the
bar down at um i did 10 i set the bar down and then I planned to do five more. And,
um, obviously I did three and I had two left. So without rolling around on the ground, it was like
10 seconds. And, uh, if I would have done it again, I think I could have pushed through all
15, but who knows? I think my time, my time is okay with me. So I wouldn't redo it. I'm,
I'm all right with that. Uh, Brian you have any video that's as good as that?
Can you talk?
No, it's not entertaining at all.
It's just embarrassing.
I did see you on all fours in some picture recently I commented on.
Yeah.
Well, look, from the top athletes, I saw a couple athletes. I think Colton Mertens, when he finished the workout, he just top athletes. Like I saw a couple of athletes,
I think Colton Mertens,
when he finished the workout,
he just kind of stands there like almost looking like that's it.
Yeah.
But a lot of the,
a lot of the people,
whether they were finishing in five and a half minutes,
like Angelo,
whether they were finishing in like seven or eight minutes.
Yeah.
I'm not even in this picture.
I took this picture.
This they're doing Barbara.
Bulgarian split squat.
Oh,
I thought that was you. Damn. No, you damn no no these are the guys i trained how did you do on the workout
did i miss it no i haven't said uh yeah i did not finish the workout um the first
the first time i tried it i got uh seven of the thrusters and i got uh i had like two minutes and I only got seven thrusters.
I was completely obliterated and didn't have anything
left in the tank.
This is from the second week.
The deadlifts were good, but I didn't post
a video of the burpees because they were also embarrassing.
These are pictures from this past week.
I looked
back at my video and I realized that in the
12 minutes that I was doing it, I spent six minutes I, I looked back at my video and I realized that in the 12 minutes that I was
doing it, I spent six minutes and 10 seconds resting.
Wow.
So I came up with a plan that I thought would work to try to eliminate a lot of the rest
time, keep my heart rate a little bit more regulated and have a lot more in the tank,
getting to the bar muscle ups and, um, and the thrusters at the end with the small number
of double unders in between.
But I miscalculated on the time.
And by the time I finished the thrusters at 115 and turned around to do the bar muscle,
because I didn't want to look at the time because I trusted that the plan I had to work out,
I didn't have enough time to finish or to even improve.
And so I just totally miscalculated it and didn't even really get a good chance to improve.
And I ended up missing the quarterfinals by probably 100 spots or something like that
maybe more than that it actually keeps filtering they keep you know but maybe a thousand does that
bum you out you really want did you really want to qualify for the quarterfinals yes but this is
actually the reason why the open does matter is because i have three like very known weaknesses.
One is conventional deadlifting because it really messes up my hip.
So I don't ever do it.
And the other two are chest bar pull-ups and thrusters.
And in the three weeks that were tested,
thrusters and deadlifts were the critical factors for me in two of the week.
I was like fourth percentile in the first week of the open,
and I wasn't even close in the second week. And then I had poor execution, and I didn't improve
on either of my redo attempts for various reasons. And so I didn't make it. But there were other
people that are very similar fitness levels to me in the women's field at my gym and in the teenage
field in my gym, who also were like right on the the line they weren't sure if they were going to make it this so one kid 14 years old we did the workout today he never strung two bar
muscle-ups together before friday he got eight muscle-ups on friday he got 15 today and did the
double unders and he because of that improved his score enough to make it through to the age of
violent qualifier and there at every division there are people like us that are trying to make
it to the quarterfinals and sometimes the program is going to be good.
And sometimes the execution is going to be good.
And sometimes it's not.
And so I recognize that the programming was tough for me this year.
And the last two weeks, I think I could have made it through with a little bit better strategy and execution on those workouts.
But I didn't make it this year.
And I'm okay with that.
I'll still do the workouts and kind of see how I would have done if I had made it.
But that was like my kind of see how i would have done if they if i had made it but um
that was like the my kind of open journey and i'm sure that there are thousands and thousands
of people that are in a similar situation many of whom reach out to me on instagram i'm glad i'm
glad you said that and i'm and i like these comments because as much as we talk about the
open not mattering and like i like i keep saying you know, the right people are getting to quarterfinals to move on to the next stage.
We do have, so I mean, like, like Brian saying,
there's people who train all year for the open and that's their, you know, that's their goal and they want to do as well as they can in the open.
And there's people who train every year,
kind of like Brian who want to make it a quarterfinals and are right on that
cusp of maybe making quarterfinals or not.
And if the test isn't diverse enough or,
or what,
what do we say?
What was the heterogeneity?
Heterogeneity enough.
Yeah.
It's not heterogeneous enough to,
um,
to make it fair for those people who are right on the cusp.
That's the one thing I don't like.
So one thing I don't like about it is that it wasn't, it wasn't broad enough to test the people who want to be on the cusp that's the one thing i don't like so one thing i don't like about it is that it wasn't
it wasn't broad enough to test uh the people who want to be on the cusp and who it really i mean
particularly the open who it really matters to um and then no i mean look look some of the things
that i'm that i'm really good at are rolling workouts and double under workouts and they were
not present and irrelevant this year and that under workouts and they were not present and
irrelevant this year and that's okay um you're not going to get the same the test that you want
every year that's what we were talking about for athletes like katrin and sam and those examples
and you know and that's totally fine though the it's meant to expose weaknesses john young was
commenting in the comments he finished this workout in 9 25 that's a really good time he
didn't make the quarterfinals either because week one exposed his weakness.
And that's just how it goes for a lot of people. So there is a huge group of people in the middle
ranges there, or maybe that 10% range. Cause I only made it last year by about the margin.
I missed it this year in a small margin. So yeah, it doesn't matter. I'm not saying,
I'm not, I'm not saying that it's not, uh, I'm not saying that it's not – I'm not saying that this – I can't compare this to another year.
I mean, yeah, we all agree that kind of this test sucks, but I don't know.
I just think that they could have made it a little more broad and gave everyone more of an opportunity to make it, whether it's in your wheelhouse or not.
Like that shouldn't change it.
It should be if it's broad enough and it tests you enough the right people are going to make it and
i don't i don't i just don't think that's true this year i think that in my left people out
of quarterfinals who could have been there if they would have had a better broader test
well the this is the one thing i will i will say is if there's a potential that a bunch of people
could have made it through who have super high capacity and will score zero on two of the five upcoming tests because they might not have the skills or the weight.
I mean, this happened to me last year.
I scored a zero on the snatch burpee box before workout because I couldn't snatch 185.
And there was a girl in my gym who scored zero on two workouts despite making it through because she just didn't have those skills so so there's a certain percentage of people that are make it through that that uh that won't won't really
have this requisite prerequisite skill set to be to even do some of the workouts in quarterfinals
but i guess that's okay i mean i don't know yeah i don't know uh we uh we charge angelo based on
how many followers he puts on.
So we charge him a dollar a follower.
So if he puts on like 1,000 followers, he pays us 1,000 bucks.
Brian, someone just sent me a screenshot of your Instagram.
It says, thank you all for all the encouraging messages.
I will address most of the questions you all have been asking on the Real Sebon podcast tonight.
Is there anything – did we address anything in particular no i think a
majority of the uh we we covered them throughout the show and then they're um giving us a chance
to talk about that experience because i think that the experience i had this year was one that a lot
of people had which was they maybe did well on one or two workouts and had one that wasn't that good
um i i heard from a lot of people who you, made it last year and didn't make it this year.
And, and like, I think that's totally fine because that's how it, that's how it is. That's how it's
always been. There was always a certain turnover at the games. There's always a certain turnover
at regionals or semifinals. And now we're seeing that certain turnover at quarterfinals. And from
CrossFit's perspective, if they want the, the open to be less about the people at the top of the
leaderboard and more about the middle third of the leaderboard or so, you know, there are a lot of people.
I know a lot of them personally and others have reached out to me who I don't know, but have, you know, had kind of shared their story with me with the Open this year that are, you know, really trying hard to get into that group of people that gets to participate in the quarterfinals.
So maybe if that's,
even if that's what they want,
then it seems to be working.
Did I hear,
I thought I heard a girl.
Do one of you guys have a girl?
Hello,
just testing angels at the firehouse.
Yeah.
As long as it leaves me and you, there's angels at the firehouse yeah as long as me and you seven
there's girls at the fire uh i'm looking for um oh uh two two things i want to tell you guys about
i want to talk about pat velner really quick um uh how how did pat velner do what pat velner took
second last year in the crossfit games right We saw him go to war at the end.
It was basically at the end there, the last day,
was the Pat Vellner-Justin Medeiros show.
They both did – they put on an amazing show for us.
And it's going to be interesting to see what happens this year.
My prediction, and it doesn't mean shit,
is that Pat's career is waning
and Justin Medeiros' is waxing, and unfortunately that is going to hurt a little bit to see.
I don't think we're going to enjoy seeing that as fans.
But hopefully I'm wrong and they'll put on a good battle again this year.
How did Pat – so 69th, 4th and 47th.
Right, but he did that first workout live in the open
announcement and like we've talked
about before most of the time
not all the time most of the time
the people who do the live open workout announcements
have a worse
score than they would have had if had they done
it in their box almost always when they repeat
it it's significantly better my guess
is he could have potentially gotten even one more round if he chose to redo that workout and then he would have been finishing
well within the top 20 probably and uh that you know and it but he i think he wasn't interested
in trying to win it this year yeah i mean what he had only 51 points besides that that would
51 points would put him seventh i think he could have scored probably around 40th or 50th in the
world in that workout if he wanted to so he'd be finishing right around the top 10 all right
uh tomorrow we have matt o'keefe on um he is now no longer with wadapalooza and loud and loud and
live is that the name of the parent company loud Loud and Live Sports. And he's now over at Matt Fraser's company, HWPO.
If you would like to see, there's a video.
I'm going to watch it tonight.
I haven't seen it yet, but there's an interview with Matt Fraser regarding some of the changes at HWPO.
I know they're changing their platform this week, or they changed it a couple days ago where he does his programming.
I think he originally signed up with Steph Cohen's company and he's moved to his own platform
and his own app. And there's an interview with him. I think it's Lauren Khalil over at the
Morning Chalk Up. I'm trying to find it that she just did with him and I haven't seen it.
But if you want to hear Matt talk about it, I suggest you go over there and check that out.
I'm guessing that's what they talked about. And if you want to hear Brian and I
talk to Matt O'Keefe about it um who has recently jumped on board with uh fraser and hwpo and sammy
over there um you can tune in tomorrow at 7 a.m pacific standard time and we'll be shooting the
shit with o'keefe and that's always fun he's so chill so chill uh and then we have Justin Bieber on, on, uh, on Wednesday morning.
It's crazy, crazy, crazy.
Oh no, no, no.
That's not Justin Bieber this week.
Uh, we have David Anama.
Um, he is Uganda's first UFC fighter.
He's nine and one.
We will see him on Wednesday morning.
On Thursday, we have Dr. Roger on.
That's going to be a fascinating show.
Dr. Roger lost a hundred pounds and he a fascinating show Dr. Roger lost 100 pounds
and he is working with the indigenous tribes
up in Canada
trying to spread the good word of CrossFit over there
in communities that are being ravaged by type 2 diabetes
and then on the
18th we have Brian
Monarch on he's a comedian
that's going to be a great show too
and on Saturday the 19th we don't have
anything so you'll probably do a live call-in show.
And on the 21st, we have Elliot Holson on Monday and Michael Easter.
Man, this is packed.
Anything else for tonight, Seva?
That's it.
Love you guys.
Sarah Cox, thank you again.
You're a queen amongst princesses.
Thank you.
