We're just people all around, so...
Where did you say you are?
The airport.
What are you doing there?
Traveling home.
What's today? Today's Tuesday?
Yeah.
Why didn't you come home yesterday?
It's usually too soon for me.
I'm not ready usually.
Did you go to the venue on monday
so basically you're done did you have meetings in madison
nope hey uh do you know how to wipe your own butt you don't can you wipe his butt
no oh okay i just need a couple minutes with d, and then I'll come over there and wave your butt. Hey, congratulations on an amazing event. Spectacle was fantastic. Athletes look great. Fun to watch. It's more TV than I've watched in the last two years I watched last week, so congratulations. It's awesome.
Thanks.
So you're in Madison, and you're flying back to california
i'm in chicago now oh are you at a fbo are you at a little private airport are you flying private
not this time you don't ball like that not currently what airline are you flying united oh so sorry i'm so sorry um i i had a question for you thanks for jumping on
with me do you know how um did you know that instagram they now they sent me an invitation
saying that um i can now make money using my igtv have you ever seen that
that's cool what are you gonna do it yeah i'm gonna do it i signed up for it
that's cool what are you gonna do it yeah i'm gonna do it i signed up for it
so how much money you gonna make i don't know i think my followers uh see i'm shadow banned to all get out so it's pretty funny that they would send me that invitation it's a mistake in the
system the teams aren't talking to each other correctly you mean to offer me that yeah exactly
okay hold on one second sorry i gotta me that yeah exactly okay hold on one second sorry
i gotta go wipe someone's butt hold on one second are we live i asked the boys if they would uh
if they could not cry for like eight minutes while i did this quick little podcast with you
and instead they've all gone poop since i've gotten on with you um oh davy i lost you can
you come back on?
Here's my, here,
what are the big things that you're thinking about?
Like, what are the thoughts,
like after the game's being over
that you're like processing now?
Or are you even doing any of that?
Use this hyper, like focused moment and time
of like living in the competition to just.
What's your brain saying to you now you're you're
24 hours out 48 hours out from the last event what are the types of things you think about now
my brain's telling me to do something that i typically don't do right after the games
and i'm trying to and i think i will but for a few days stay super focused on it and just all the things I saw and all the things I want to make better, just put down.
I mean, I already have a bunch of good ideas for next year.
I need to get them on the board, on a piece of paper, however I do my system.
But just like use this creative, like I'm in this moment of creativity still and channel it into something positive for
next year so basically you're exhausted you've been on a fucking just a and and what you really
want to do is just sign out and maybe go do some shooting or spend some time with your family but
you know that you need to use this clarity that you have to just push through and i kind of started it today this morning already did you see my story uh i
saw a little bit of it go look do you know some of the workouts for next year's games already
and you're with with some pretty oh, yeah. I saw your after action report post.
Yeah, I saw that.
Yeah.
Oh, and you've redacted stuff.
Yep.
Gotcha.
Is that a military thing or is that just normal corporate stuff?
I mean, like I learned all that stuff from you working at CrossFit.
I mean, I originally learned it in the military. The concepts have been around forever.
Obviously.
Um,
is it,
is it something like,
is it something that everyone does at,
uh,
HQ now?
I don't think so.
Oh,
what?
Oh,
how,
how long will the games be in Madison?
This next year for sure.
And we'll take it from there.
So 2022 for sure.
And you don't have any complaints, right?
No.
You like the spot, the venue?
Yeah, it's a good location.
The hospitality, the hotels, all of that stuff, the road network, it all functions?
My only complaint is that it's so far from california right so just on a for a personal
personal self yeah um did you ever have any problems with carson i know greg had problems
with carson i personally liked i loved the venue oh i fucking loved carson that's always going to
be one of our homes and uh i mean to be
honest with you i'd love to return at some point it's other than obviously the ranch is the original
home but carson is like the home of our growth you know what i mean by that is like right carson
is like the home of us like this thing blowing up it's not why we blew up but it was there to
nurture that growth and and take it all in.
Can you tell me, Cliff Notes version, I know you got aboard the plane, why you switched from the ranch in 2009 to Carson in 2010?
Oh, yeah.
From 2009 to 2010, we were supposed to do the 2010 games at the ranch, but the county basically hit us for permitting.
They said the ranch was permitted for ag and not events.
Obviously we didn't have a permit. I mean,
it wasn't built with the intent, the intent to have events there. So,
so we got a little permitting thing and they wouldn't let us do it there.
But, but you tried, right?
It was a blessing in disguise because imagine this seven
what if we would have kept doing it there and what if we wouldn't have been forced out
and you know what would have happened even greg might have been like no let's keep doing here i
don't want it bigger than this i don't want it bigger i mean that's a distinct possibility you
know for sure so so i've never thought of this but as we're talking through it
had it not been our hand been forced to move it might have held us back yeah kind of like
me being fired from hq i don't get that at all i do i'm not making an action oh you should
hey um i wouldn't have this wonderful podcast if it wasn't for that.
So I always imagined that you guys would keep building out at the ranch.
Oh, shit.
I'm sorry.
I just gave you this sign.
What's that mean?
It's A-OK, but I also think now they're going to probably label me a white supremacist.
Oh, you can't be.
You're Mexican.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
And you're full-blooded Mexican uh, Mexican for like mom and dad,
right? Yeah. I was going to ask you your mom's maiden name, but I know you'd yell at me for that.
Um, so, um, I always just pictured the ranch getting billed out. Like I thought you, you,
I thought CrossFit Inc was going to buy the property across the street. I thought you guys were going to build bleachers. I mean, that's what I thought when I worked there.
That's what I thought the direction we were going.
And it is a festive scene.
Davey, I'm going to ask you something about the Monster Energy drink deal here.
Please.
Please.
The CrossFit Games are unique from Darnold Classic and the Mr. Universe competition.
Have you ever been to either of those?
No.
So they're basically giant vendor villages. They're basically hundreds of thousands of square feet of vendors and really, really buff guys.
And there's not this familial component that the CrossFit
Games has. The CrossFit Games feels more like a Grateful Dead concert. You can say hi to anyone.
You can talk to anyone. There's kids there. There's old people there. Are you feeling me on
that? Do you have any pushback on any of that? And you could take my word that the Arnold and
the Mr. Universe are not like that. They're basically – it almost feels like a – it feels more like a supplement convention, right?
I don't know, a fitness convention than the way I still perceive it.
And I don't know how you perceive the games, but as sort of it's more of a gathering of the tribes.
No, it's still totally a gathering of the tribes. And six or seven monster girls there don't make that go away or diminish that or ruin that.
Right. I get that.
But that group to me, when I saw photos of them on Instagram and I was not at the event, was giving me that Arnold Classic, Mr. Universe vibe.
My brief interactions with them, with those girls in particular, via selfies they asked for, they seemed very pleasurable and nice, and I didn't get that vibe.
They asked to take selfies with you?
Yeah.
Is it a selfie if you're in it?
No, it's their selfie, and I'm in it.
Right, right.
I said, hey, can we get a selfie?
Right, right.
I said, hey, can we get a selfie?
At the end of the women's competition, I saw – I had heard about it, and then finally I saw pictures of it, of Tia going over and bringing Danielle Brandon into the fray.
Did you witness that?
I didn't witness it, but I ended up seeing the pictures you were talking about.
Are you surprised to see that from Tia?
Am I surprised to see that from Tia?
I would say yes, like no, but it's also never a situation I've ever been placed in for her to do something like that.
See what I'm saying?
Yeah. Well, here's two – when we watch her from home and the times I filmed the behind the
scenes of the CrossFit Games, she's very, very focused.
She interacts with Shane, her husband.
She's not really – she was never really – it felt like too receptive to doing interviews.
I know she tried to walk off from doing interviews.
She's just super-duper focused, not rude at all.
This isn't to dig at her.
But now I'm like almost like it's just all show show time, right?
It's all go.
I saw I saw something really impressive.
OK, tell me.
At Air Miles, we help you collect more moments.
So instead of scrolling through photos of friends on social media,
you can spend more time dinnering with them.
How's that spicy enchilada?
Very flavorful.
Yodeling with them.
Ooh, must be mating season.
And hiking with them.
Is that a squirrel?
Bear! Run!
Collect more moments with more ways to earn.
Air Mile.
So at the end of competition, after all the award ceremony,
everyone was hanging out.
Not everyone.
Actually, at this point, no athletes.
It was just volunteers and staff were out on the floor.
This competition had been over for over an hour. at this point no athletes it was just volunteers and staff were out on the floor this competition
had been over for over an hour all the athletes were getting their drug testing who needed it
the podium finishers i was doing pictures with fans and with volunteers and it was all winding
down and uh i decided to leave and i walk out of the tunnel and I walk out into the warm-up area and nobody's there no athletes
no coaches it's completely empty and there's three volunteers picking up trash in the volunteer in
the in the um athlete warm-up area and like an hour ago that athlete warm-up area was thriving
with bodies and people and energy and now it's completely empty except for those three
volunteers picking up trash and i look and i'm like wait a minute i go shane and he looks up and
i'm like what are you doing and he's like oh i'm picking up our trash i go what do you mean he
goes well this isn't their trash he pointed to the volunteers because this is all the trash we left
so i figured i'd not do anything so i'd help. And I was like, and it was completely like real and genuine and authentic.
And I was like, hey, that's really fucking cool.
But like, that's what this team's here to do.
Like, we'll take care of it.
You don't have to, you don't have to do that.
But we really appreciate it.
So it was just like a super cool thing of Shane.
It was really neat to see that.
And like, there was no camera,
not that I'm saying Shane does things for cameras or anything like that, but sometimes other people
do, but there was no one around, there was no cameras. It was super, just a authentic moment
of seeing what a good person he is. Let me ask you this. And I've just heard this third person
I heard. So, so when Brooke hurt her arm, we know she's training partners with Tia, and it's pretty crazy that Tia and Laura just went straight on right after them.
Like the show has to go on, right? Even though Tia's training partner just had possibly a career-ending injury. I heard that as soon as Tia was lifting, she ran into the tunnel to look for Brooke.
Is there any truth to that?
Do you,
have you heard that story or?
Yeah,
it's absolutely true.
It's not as soon as Tia was lifting,
as soon as the event was over,
we both made a beeline to the tunnel.
She was in front of me.
She got in the tunnel before I did.
And like,
as soon as we got in the
tunnel she like broke down and started falling and went running and like seeing that was like
it fucking it was like wow and so she was he was crying and she went running for time for us
and i was going to the same place because i wanted to see what was going on and uh we ended up over
at the area where they're taking care of her.
She was inside the x-ray room getting stuff done.
And her family was all there at that point.
I just want to point out to people what Dave said.
She was inside the x-ray room.
That's at the facility, people.
So Dave, people have questioned all over the internet and the CrossFit properties,
whether that situation was handled right.
And I keep explaining to them that a world-class orthopedic surgeon who graduated from Harvard,
whose wife's also a Harvard doctor grad, was on the scene within 30 seconds and that they
have stuff like x-ray machines and shit on the facility.
That's accurate, right?
Oh, that's incredibly, completely accurate.
And you know what's nuts is Brooke actuallyoke actually told me they were taking x they were using the x-ray machine to determine how to put it back in
so so sean rockett and then even back up here's what's crazy when she did that snatch
i see her scream i see her go down and she's screaming and uh everyone's kind of just looking at her
i look to my right and you know he's standing right next to me on the other side of the barricade
who sean rocket i grabbed him and i say and i pull him over the barricade and i said get over
there now and he jumps over the barricade and runs right there. And so like you just said, a world-class orthopedic surgeon was on her within 15 to 20 seconds, grabs her, takes her off, and then started handling the situation.
I also heard that Katina Thornton, who I have the utmost respect for, who's an affiliate owner, a physician, another brainiac, was basically Danielle Brandon's docent the entire week. And Danielle, although she was less than happy about the situation, she was extremely pleased to have Katina Thornton at her side.
Is that accurate that it was Katina Thornton at her side. Is that accurate that it was Katina
Thornton? Getting ready to board, but yeah. I couldn't hear you, Dave. Getting ready to board.
Anyway, to finish that. On the Katina thing, yep. Yeah, she was assigned to Brooke.
I'm sorry, not Brooke, Danielle.
And Danielle was – hold on.
We got time.
And Danielle was extremely happy with having her and how she treats her.
I talked to Danielle briefly about it.
She appreciated having Katina.
And so just to tie up the Tia thing, it's pretty amazing that she won fittest fifth time in a row.
There's all these eyes on her. She's probably trying to soak it in and process it. And yet
she has the wherewithal and the situational awareness to grab Danielle Brandon and include her. I just thought, yeah, what like amazing, right?
Yep. For sure.
Um, who was the drunkest person you saw that I would know at the after party?
I'm guessing you went to the after party.
I guess it was probably me.
Did you wake up hung over the next morning? I guess it was probably me.
Did you wake up hungover the next morning?
A little.
Not as bad as some years, but a little.
Does any part of you not want to go to the after party?
You're like, I'm done.
I just want to go lay down.
No, I think there's one year I didn't in Carson and I regret it.
I did just lay down and I passed out and I never got up to go back down. Um,
so no, I, I like to go.
Have you heard any feedback from Rosa and the,
and Berkshire about whether they were pleased with the event?
During the event, not really after Eric sent me a nice note but um yeah and and do you get to keep your job like did you do a good job
i think so that's good right i hope so i mean there's got to be that intense pressure on you
right it's the most forward-facing event of the CrossFit ecosystem.
This guy has basically just come in and bought the company.
Yeah, all that.
But let me tell you something.
Let me tell you something.
I'm not ever thinking about like, oh, shit, I got to do a good job because of Eric and Berkshire.
You know what I mean?
I'm doing a good job because I fucking care about this thing and i care about the community and i care about the event so like what there's the situation you're stating there isn't isn't like one i'm
living through where i'm like oh no what about eric right what about you know is the crossfit
games your baby yes like like you really really take it's a part of your identity
for sure and it's almost too much of my identity i especially when i was running training i would
get really i didn't like how much i would associate
i was upset with how much i was associated as a games guy and didn't get enough credit for the training.
Right.
But what I'm asking more is inside, inside of your brain, are you really wrapped up with the games?
Like the way you are.
I know you better than most people.
I know you're pretty heavily invested in your kids.
Is it like that yeah but in a different way right right well yeah of course
um i have one personal question are you boarding soon yeah but i got this we're good okay i have
one personal question to ask you real quick and before i go back to that uh games thing today I'm going to have Avi do Fran for the first time, and he's never done Fran.
I'm guessing it will take him like maybe 15 minutes.
But should I use a five-pound bar or to try to get more in the Instagram algorithm,
should I use the five-pound bar with the five-pound training plates?
Because that seems to get me in the algorithm.
If you want to go viral, force him to do it with the 95 pound training plates because that seems to get me in the algorithm if you want
to go viral forcing to do it with the 95 pound bar oh some things never change some things never
change um if the crossfit games are your baby whatever way if you use whatever way he can do, seven to eight reps unbroken. Okay. Okay.
Where would you say the CrossFit Games are?
Are they still a baby?
Are we going to see tremendous changes in the next 10 years,
whether it be viewership, athleticism?
Yes.
Is this thing still just a baby?
It's a seedling still?
Well, in terms of the athletic performance,
that stuff, there's going to be improvement, but the jumps are going to be a lot smaller.
So, for example, remember in 2008 or 2009 games, a 225 snatch for the men was huge, right?
And now, basically, some of these guys can snatch 325s.
And a 15-year-old girl almost did 225. She did 202.
Yeah, so that's not almost, but I hear what you're saying.
But in 10 years, we're not going to see guys snatching 425.
Okay, yeah.
I wasn't so much talking about that.
I'm talking really big picture.
I'm talking the size of Ender Village.
You did kind of say athletic performance. That was one of the lines. Okay, well, then I asked it wrong. I'm sorry the size of Vendor Village. You did kind of say athletic performance.
That was one of the lines.
Okay, well, then I asked it wrong.
I'm sorry, Dave.
What I mean is, is Vendor Village going to be twice as big?
Are there going to be twice as many people in attendance in 10 years?
Is the prize money going to increase?
Is this thing just a baby?
And is it really just a baby?
Or is it a teenager?
Yes, all of the above.
Teenager or baby?
I can't hear you.
Yeah, it's in a grow.
But I'm trying to pin you down to what stage it's at.
Oh, it's in a teen stage. it uh yeah it's in stage that's good i'll buy that
okay i think it's just in its infancy i think it's a seedling
okay uh it sounds like you're um boarding i going to let you go now because our connection is getting really bad.
And I already have a reputation for having shitty audio.
Do me a favor and don't close the app, though, okay?
Okay.
Safe travels.
Thanks.
Can Avi come over and shoot soon?
Yes.
Okay, thank you.
I'll see you tonight at the ranch to shoot.
