Starting point is 00:00:00 After decades of shaky hands caused by debilitating tremors, Sunnybrook was the only hospital in Canada who could provide Andy with something special. Three neurosurgeons, two scientists, one movement disorders coordinator, 58 answered questions, two focused ultrasound procedures, one specially developed helmet, thousands of high-intensity focused ultrasound waves, zero incisions, and that very same day, two steady hands. From innovation to action, Sunnybrook is special.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Learn more at Sunnybrook.ca slash special. The ScoreBet app here with trusted stats and real-time sports news. Yeah, hey, who should I take in the Boston game? Well, statistically speaking. Nah, no more statistically speaking. I want hot takes. I want knee-jerk reactions. That's not really what I do.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Is that because you don't have any knees? Or... Ugh. The Scorebeck. Trusted sports content, seamless sports betting. Download today. 19+, Ontario only. If you have questions or concerns about your gambling or the gambling of someone close to you, please go to connexontario.ca. Ugh. Wow. Hello. So just going to address some comments. Kenneth the lap. Well, that was fun. Colton winning is just the norm now. Shut up, Kenneth.
Starting point is 00:01:19 That's not true. Judy, why are we late? Sorry. No idea why we're late. Crossfit. Taylor's trying to find sharp objects. Correct. What we're really going to be discussing today on Shut Up and Scribble is why JR is so bad at programming for me. And still waiting for him to come on. All right, I couple minutes, we'll see if JR shows up. He's supposed to be showing up.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Okay, here we go. Sick. I think. Wow, how professional are we? Alright, so. J.R. Howell, Z. Quartez, great show, Taylor, Molo, at least there was a lot of engagement on KT. Yep, that is what really matters. Better to have a bunch of collars than for me to hit a home run. I don't know. Probably better for me to hit a home run. Taylor, I know I keep asking, but just curious how you fueled that last workout.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I had like a cup and a half, I only ate once today and it's 3.34. I had a massive breakfast around 11 o'clock or around 12 o'clock. I think I ate around noon and I did that workout at 2. I had like oatmeal with a scoop of protein in it and a banana cut up and then I had 4 eggs and maybe a third pound of ancestral blend beef. What's up bro? What's up? When are you going to write a workout that I can actually win in? CrossFit, that's correct. I actually venmoed him before.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Because I was so confident. He venmoed me, so to speak. What, what, what? I'm done, I'm done, uh, I'm done programming for any of the kill tailors. Dude, stop! Do not say that! Look, this is the thing. It's really hard to program for that because any of the big guys Who would beat me in that workout not many would and then any big guy or any little guy workouts? It's like you know it's like what are you gonna? Do I'm right in the middle? I'm not a big guy, and I'm not a midge either so well. I think it's all it's also Reasonable to say the first workout that I sent you yes
Starting point is 00:04:02 I would need needs to be needs to be next week's workout because your hands were destroyed. Holy shit. Oh my god. The camera's falling. Sorry. I'm trying to fix this. Um so what are we talking about this week? Really? I thought you guys talked about with Angelo rogue. God, this thing is yeah, we went through the qualifier workouts and just kind of went through like a first glance what we thought about them. What we thought good strategies were, what we thought like the best times or best scores would be like on the AM rap we were saying seven plus would be a good score and stuff like that. I still think we can we can pull up the leaderboard and go through who's I think there've already been some penalties levied though
Starting point is 00:04:39 so I think the leaderboard has already changed, which is, uh, I guess expected. Rogue invitation on the queue leaderboard. Last year there was a ton of movement on the leaderboard after the video review. The queue. Cause I think Jason moved up two or three spots to get in from where he started. Okay. So present share, leaderboard, boom. Okay, Giorgos Caraves still in first, Tudor Magda basically points Ty for first, but in second.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Cole Grey Shaver third, Jorge Fernandez fourth, Trayvon Benton fifth. This is how I'm really, God, I'm so annoyed. There was no way I was going to be in any position to do these right after, uh, NCC, but man, I know for a fact, I could beat all four of these guys, all five. Dude, I'm su I, I don't care when he was doing them. If tutor was doing them in between or if you did one before that's, I mean, it's, that's super impressive to me that he can even qualify with that going on last weekend. That's really, really pretty impressive.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Um, the times was that Cole went sub 15 on the echo dumbbell snatch workout. That'd be a good workout just for you to do in training to see if you could get on it. Yeah, I'm going to do that workout. It's like power output on the eco bike type thing. Ish or dumbbell cycling. Wow Guillaume Briant, a lot of names here. Ooh Nick Matthew down 14, that's not a good look. Jack Rosemont 17th, also not a good look.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Crazy. Do you think this is okay these guys just aren't in peak shape right now? Or do you think that it's the workouts for them? I think it's probably the workouts for them. Interesting. What do you think about the workouts? Generally, I thought it was good, for a four like workout online competition. I loved that there were like heavy movements but there wasn't a max and in years past they've at least way to do kind of a battery type test. Me and Angel talked about AMRAPs traditionally in competition, not maybe being a great idea because of the amount of wear and tear on the body. But for an online qualifier, I think they're good. And I think maybe doing one out of four was a good call.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Try to find where I can pull the workouts up. How have you worked? I was surprised to see the amount of squat repetitions versus the amount of pulling from the floor repetitions. That's what I'll say was the biggest surprise for me. So there's 150 dumbbell snatches, 21 deadlifts, 15 cleans, nine squat snatch. And then there were... Would you not count any of these reps? I know it's not a squat, but it is a similar movement pattern where you're pushing.
Starting point is 00:07:55 It's just unilateral. Yeah, no, no, I think it's really good that they did a unilateral movement. Like I think lunges or step ups in a competition is a good way to maybe expose a weakness. But do you think a movement pattern like a dumbbell box step over is similar to a squat the way a dumbbell snatch is similar to a deadlift? Like they're different enough that they're not the same, but they are both fundamentally
Starting point is 00:08:18 a pulling movement pattern or a pushing with a lower body movement pattern? When I think of a heavy step over, I think of posterior. I think of low back and I think of glute. Really? I don't, I think it's all quad. You think it's more quad? Yeah, that's just, maybe that's just like our body types or whatever. I think I usually feel a step up in the same, in the same area that I
Starting point is 00:08:38 would feel a hinging movement. I think it's for me, I think it's all quad, especially if it's like you hold one object here or, or even you can swing one dumbbell. I would hold it on the shoulder if it were me. Yeah, I didn't watch any videos or see anybody do it, but I was wondering how hard or easy those heavy single dumbbell stepovers were. I did that Saxon Panchic workout with the Echo bike and sandbag step ups and if they feel similar to that I mean I would imagine just weight wise they feel similar You know not really a hard part of that workout. I would say probably the harder part of that workout is
Starting point is 00:09:15 Staying unbroken on the 9 and 15 To me I would say the 12 are probably almost a point of like where your heart rate can come down a little bit Yeah, I really liked that there were four and that two of them seem to be dependent on the gymnastics and that's good and then two of them seemed to be dependent more so on like battery strength and then one was a little longer like I thought that was good. Tough workouts. Yeah it's pretty crazy tutor qualifying if he doesn't get penalized after that weekend. What else is up dude? Nothing dude just getting ready for getting ready for the competition we're a month out today
Starting point is 00:10:06 tonight athlete emails go out so it has like checking information event release information all that kind of stuff and then also tonight we're going to post a little teaser for some of the events. Wow. What kind of just a not like, not like no like clues or like partial workouts, but um, maybe the names of the workouts will come out to all the names. Maybe. Well, dude, you are on your podcast. Why don't you give people some love and give us an exclusive all of the event and names will be released tonight.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Sick. On the Crash Crucible. So it'll be, people will be able to, I would say deduce a good bit of information from the names, especially if you can think creatively and if you're a little bit clever with your puns and your play on words. Crazy. How do you feel after the competition now that you're almost a week out?
Starting point is 00:11:09 Or you are a week out. I feel pretty good. I have I'm doing a competition this weekend. So I think that's Whether or not that's a good idea TBD. I Think it's it's a fun thing anything team, especially if your goals are individual I think can just be a good time. The problem is I don't know anything about team. So it's either going to be a disaster or Travis Williams and Mackenzie will be able to teach me a thing or two, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Probably will be able to teach you a thing or two. It'll probably be good just, it'll probably just be good for your, your working on your patience. May, they don't, Travis doesn't strike me as a very patient guy. It's probably good you guys are good alone then. What did you think about those workouts? Do we want to pull those up?
Starting point is 00:11:54 Yeah, let's pull those up. Let me go to their website. I don't think that, I don't know if they have a website. I'm going to go to their Instagram. Yeah, they've always had a pretty cool backdrop for their competition. They've got like a huge turf outside and I think in the back of their facility that I know they do a lot of the workouts on. Hopefully the weather will hold up and they'll-
Starting point is 00:12:18 Oh, what's the weather supposed to be like? I don't know, in Charlotte, I don't know. I know it's supposed to rain here all weekend. So maybe you guys are far north enough. I remember FitFest I think last year doing, using a log similar to what you did at Charlotte Classic and doing either burpee get overs or like sandbag overs or stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I'm not gonna go to go in order. I don't know what the order is. Okay, here we go. This is event four. So for the advanced co-ed, four, sorry, three four-minute intervals. So four on, one off, four on, one off, four on, 20 worm deadlifts, 15 synchro burpee over the worms, and then 10 worm clusters. Then in the remaining time, max distance lunge. I don't know how they're scoring the lunch. That's something I've got to get some clarity on, but what do you think about? That's a pretty nasty workout. I feel like.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Yeah, that's nasty. And I, I've never seen, um, clusters of the worm programmed in a hang their hang. Okay. So that, that does make it a lot, um lot more doable as far as cycling goes. Right. Like you won't need to do singles. Let's watch them do some hang clusters. Let's see. They'll probably...
Starting point is 00:13:35 Yeah, this is what I'm most nervous about is anything with a worm. And you don't have to do it in one smooth motion like the squat. Oh, okay. Yeah. And you don't have to do it in one smooth motion like the squat. Yeah. So you could potentially do a hang squat clean or a hang clean squat shoulder to overhead if you wanted to. Gotcha. That's for a different division.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Okay. So that's one event. Where was the there was another workout. I'm missing, here we go. These are, these are AMRAPs where basically this should be pretty cool. Two seven minute AMRAPs, I believe. One pair does one AMRAP, the other pair does the other AMRAP and that's it. And they're each a score. So it's almost like within this four-man competition or four-person competition,
Starting point is 00:14:30 this event is just like pairs. Oh, sorry. Okay, yeah, right. It's a 15-minute clock. Three, two, one, go. Pair one does an AMRAP of 12 ring muscle ups, 12 synchro, dual kettlebell hang snatches and a 60 foot handstand walk. So you know, if you have a good… if you have average handstand walkers
Starting point is 00:14:53 on each team, one person does 30, the next person does 30. Then go back to the ring muscle ups. Yeah and that's a… this is a good example. Like we've talked about programming for competitions before and the level of athlete like you're on a team with three other like Experienced games athletes individual and team at some point in their career And there are other people that are gonna be here that have been to the games on teams
Starting point is 00:15:17 Like there are good people here in this combination of movements while 12 12 and 60 Probably would not be appropriate at all for an individual seven minute AMRAP there's enough like It would it wouldn't be 12 ring muscle ups. It would probably be like, you know, eight twelve six eight twelve. Yeah or something Yeah, it's cool that they put these three movements together because I do still think there's area to separate like can you and your Can you and your female partner just split everything? Because if you can, you're going to be able to crush people. Whereas a lot of teams are going to have that maybe the guy has to do more ring or
Starting point is 00:15:52 maybe the female does more snatches because I still think 53s are harder for the guys. No, it's synchro though. The hang snatch is synchro. Okay, I see that now. So what I'm imagining is me and Mackenzie are going to do this one and Alexis and Travis do the other and I would imagine I would probably do seven or eight and she would do five or four and then we do these 12 in a row and then uh and then probably I don't
Starting point is 00:16:16 know if she'd go right. I feel like a 35s for women's easier than the 53s for a man would you agree? Yeah, for sure. So that's why I think the order, whoever goes right from the rings to the snatches kind of gets hammered. So like, does it make more sense for her to go five and then you have to go seven right into 12, or does it make more sense for you to do seven or eight and her to go four or five right into 12? That might make more sense for me to do eight and for her to do four and then go right in and then maybe switch.
Starting point is 00:16:45 I'd probably be fine to handstand walk after the 50s. So that's the first, then the second. Amrap, we'll see. Get a one minute transition and then pair two goes. Let's see. Looks like Synchro's at the top. Looks like synchro's at the top. Is this the guy who runs it, Mike? I don't know. I've actually never met him before.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Pair two. Another 7M rep, this time 12 bottom muscle ups split between 6 synchro sandbag to shoulder reps. And then this hand sandwalk includes a pirouette. That's the one sticking point. I don't know, like I'm honestly good for all of it. And so I got- Two pirouettes, huh? So it's like, it's pirouette for 130 and then pirouette back. I would assume so.
Starting point is 00:17:36 So maybe it's a halfway, I think it's 30 foot sections again. So maybe you do a pirouette at 15. Sure. Or you start- That's what it looked like on the last video. I don't know. Yeah. That's what, that's what makes this tough is like, you would look at the first AMRAP and say, okay, that's the highest skill because the ring muscle ups way harder. But then you look at this one, you're like, Oh, this has pirouettes. So it's,
Starting point is 00:17:55 it's like, it's tough. It's very good. I think it's it's yeah, for sure. It's good. You can't hide a pair. That's just not as good. Right. Yeah, that is good. Crazy, okay. That's three of the workouts. The next three, this is the first workout. This one's cool. It's pair one. You'll basically do three rounds for time as a team.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Pair one starts on a skier going to GHD. Pair two starts on a yoke. And pair one does a on a yoke, and pair one does a 75 foot yoke push, then a hand over hand sled pull, while pair two is doing 50 med ball GHDs and a 35 cal ski, so one partner skiing, one partner's doing sit ups. When each pair is finished, you guys switch
Starting point is 00:18:38 and do the opposite movement, so pair two goes to the yoke, pair one goes to the med ball and the GHD and the skier, and when both pairs are finished with a full set of 75, 75, 50, 35, you got, we go to the worm and we do 10 worm clean and jerks and that's one round. So we do three rounds of that. That's kind of a long workout. Yeah. I really liked the, I liked that movement combination a lot. Yeah, it's nasty. Having the ski and GHT together is good. Yeah. Thoughts on that workout? It doesn't seem like the sled is gonna be too much of an issue, but again it might just be a timing thing.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Right. Like, hey do you guys know, like, take all the slack out, ready, go, and a big pull. Or do you just go hand over hand the whole time? Like, do you do big two arm pulls, or do you hand over hand pull? I think, I really think it might come down to stamina on the med ball GHD for some people. Oh, if that's the case, we'll crush. Like, just speed of rep, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:19:46 Yeah. I don't know. This workout's nasty. It's only, I don't know. I mean, it's only 75 a piece if you split it up evenly. Yeah, yeah. All right, so this workout, snap squat, this is the second event.
Starting point is 00:19:58 This one is three, two, one, go. Pair one does 21 synchro snatches, then pair two does 21 synchro snatches. Then pair one splits 21 deficit handstand pushups up, then pair two splits 21 handstand pushups up. Then you all go to the barbells and the sandbags and you do basically 21 synchro squats. Two people are on sandbags, two people are doing an overhead squat. So like one male, one female overhead
Starting point is 00:20:29 squatting, one male, one female sandbag squatting. Round two, same exact thing. You just do 15 synchro snatches, then again 21 handstand push-ups, then 15 squats, then 9, 21, 9. Interesting workout. Interesting low too. 120 for guys, 85 for ladies. Probably needs to be touch and go. I don't know. Thoughts? Or is it way more handstand push-up dependent? 4 inch deficit for 63. And it's 4 inch deficit and the ladies don't get less of a deficit. Yeah that's what I was noticing that there's no... yeah I still think it's
Starting point is 00:21:11 probably a handstand push-up workout. It is just... gosh that's just a shoulder stamina. I love it. I'm definitely gonna try to be on the barbell. I would recommend that I overhead squat here for sure. I think that's definitely what you should do. I do like the amount of overhead in this competition, bodes well for me. Let's see, that's a workout and then final workout. This one's like a strongman sphere almost style of workout, just no handstand walking. It's very interesting movement selection. You do like a synchro 480 yard run or synchro. You run with a rope. See. So three two one go. All athletes run to a drag rope
Starting point is 00:21:55 and we all hold on to the drag rope. We run basically down and back six times. Or sorry down and back three times maybe. Is it a hundred and, I don't know, it's 180 feet I think. I can't, maybe it's down and back three times. Yeah, I think down and back is 80 feet or 80 meters. So it's 40 down, 40 back. And that eight times, sorry. Yeah, eight times six is 48. Yeah, it'd be six down and backs.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Yeah, so I think it's six down and backs with the drag rope. And then pair one goes to two barbells, a lady bar and a male bar, and you do 12 synchro hang power cleans with 205 135. Then your second pair does those. You have to do 12 12. Yeah, then your second pair does 12 synchro. And then the men on round one do the farmer's carry and the women on round one do the farmers carry and the women on round
Starting point is 00:22:48 one do the yoke carry mm-hmm then when you guys are done with this carry you go back to the run back to the synchro hand cleans and then on on the last round you just switch implements yeah I wonder if if like the flow will be so the female start on the farmers. Yeah, no, the female start on the yolk. Right. And then yeah, so that I wonder if you take the weight off and put it on the other thing. You do know they're going to do that in the video. He announced the cave.
Starting point is 00:23:26 They're going to change the way through the advanced division and raise the yoke if needed. Oh, they're going to do it as in the equipment crew or the team. Yep. Yep. The equipment crew, which not sure during, during the run and the hand clean. That should be enough time. A little nervous about it.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Um, yeah, during the run, during the run and the hand clean. Yeah, that'll be fine. Crazy. And, and listen, it might be one of those things like last year for the Zurcher, I just did, Hey, what's the, what's the lowest, what's the lowest height that the shortest person is able to walk with it in the Zurcher position. And then everyone else can just use the same. So like someone, I mean, if you're six'2", 6'3", the yoke may be 8 to 10 inches off the ground but at least you can do it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Carl, it is a barbell overhead squat, not a sandbag overhead squat. Who is on your team? Travis Williams, the infamous, Mackenzie Riley and Alexis Johnson. All with like tons of team experience and some individual Mackenzie Riley actually all three of qualified individual Alexis was 2017 I want to say Travis was like 16 17 18 maybe Mackenzie Riley maybe around that era as well all super fit fitter than I am so how did that team happen Mackenzie uh Travis and Mackenzie just sent me a message on Instagram was like hey do you want to do this I was like uh maybe but I don't know how I'm gonna be feeling after
Starting point is 00:24:48 NorCal but I'm feeling okay so my chest is gonna be a little sore not much chest tomorrow though. Is the ring well slept tomorrow? No second day. Okay so you're good then. Yeah I'll be fine. Tomorrow is the snatch handstand pushup and the ski GHD sled. So it'll be fine. Oh, and wait, uh, let me go back to their page. It's three events tomorrow. Um, let's see. It is okay. The snatch. It's three events tomorrow. Let's see it is okay the snatch it's that ski
Starting point is 00:25:27 GHD, worm clean and jerk, snatch squat oh and this event the yoke event then Sunday it'll be turf worms so the clusters and then it'll be that ring muscle-up that'll be those two AMRAPs to finish off the competition. Gotcha. Yeah. Yeah. It should be good. Uh, some good athletes there. Maybe. Not all clean, but you know, whatever. You excited for crucible bro? Not yet. I'll be excited a couple of before. Still a lot of stuff to do. So we're good. Same. I'm not ready at all. No you're not. But you will be. All the workouts will be out on the 27th, which is two weeks,
Starting point is 00:26:20 exactly two weeks before, but they'll start to come out the week before. So it would do like one on Sunday, one on Monday, one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday, one on Thursday, one on Friday. You know how much I hate that? I wish they all just didn't come out at all. Yeah, but a lot of questions need to be answered before you get here or else I make you come in at 7 a.m. for a briefing and you don't compete until one or two. And we know how much you love that. I would rather do that, dude, to be honest, no way, dude, no way.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Will you just listen to me? We just listened to me. I will. I'm just going to get, I will say the nicest part about NorCal was two things they did. They didn't announce the workouts at all until the night before, and they allowed you to do the briefing via Instagram Live. So me and Colton, we just sat in our basic room or at the Airbnb and watched the whole briefing on our couch. And before each event, they give you a quick brief.
Starting point is 00:27:18 And I'll say this, for an athlete like me or Colton, who doesn't ask dumb questions, that was perfect. For athletes, like a lot of, you know, was perfect for athletes like a lot of you know I mean look a lot of the semi-final athletes just ask really stupid questions and appease them I know you got to do what you got to do um but yeah I don't know I guess it sticks one way half doesn't the other yeah I do I do kind of like that idea of a virtual brief. I think that is cool. Angelo says Brent wants you to tell him workouts a year before. Hey, he's friends with Brent Angelo
Starting point is 00:27:51 and this camera angle is not very flattering. It's just straight and dome. How do I fix this? Yeah, anyways, not gonna fix that. It's very crisp. What is that 4K? What is that we got? Yeah, this is a Sony a seven Bryson's camera it's nice John Young
Starting point is 00:28:11 why are you hyped for crucible you're not even doing it bro is John Young coming he's commentating with Bill oh wow like on site hey John Young you know what you can't do as a commentator yeah I did this did this workout and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. He said he would have beaten you today. We don't want to hear any of that. Yeah, he would have beaten me. He said he took a nap and he was psyched to see the workout and he came to the gym and then all these hitters came and did the workout.
Starting point is 00:28:37 He didn't beat anybody. That's funny. Wait, what are you talking about? Jackson probably knows. This is probably the first time you've looked at the workouts. Yeah, but they're ordered. I'm just reading the order. Is there a heat schedule that's been sent out? That has it on there? Yeah, I have no idea. I gotta text. I need to. I don't even know where my phone is, dude. It's over there. I gotta get my phone and text Mackenzie. I don't even know where my phone is dude. It's over there I gotta get my phone and text Mackenzie and give I don't even have her phone number, dude. Oh This is gonna be crazy. Oh
Starting point is 00:29:10 This is to freshly shorn nutsack What time do you guys start tomorrow? Uh Noon so not an early start like 1130 noon ish And then we go basically two hours after that and two hours after that That's good. Yeah and then we go basically two hours after that and two hours after that. That's good. Yeah. Great question, Augustus.
Starting point is 00:29:29 When I poop in the woods, should I wipe? No, I don't think so. All right. Cool, so. So yeah, you're back. Two weeks without you. John Young helped me get through week one. Angelo helped me get through last week.
Starting point is 00:29:47 You'll be around until Crucible. So for the next four weeks. Yeah, next four weeks we'll have our regularly scheduled programming shows. I actually told Brian Friend, he's doing a bunch of competitions over the next 14 weeks. So I told him, hey, send me the name of the competition and me and JR will do our best to break down the programming,
Starting point is 00:30:05 but I haven't gotten a text. So we'll see, see if that happens. Yeah, we need, uh, we need, we need content and we're a programming show. So talking about, especially competitions that are going on, I mean, most people would just be looking forward to rogue because we, we know the so Cal workouts, but the sensor doing like showcases since they're doing like showcases and they're very like simple as far as, hey, you send one person out,
Starting point is 00:30:30 they max their snatch and clean and jerk, or you send one person out and they do, you know, whatever, 500 meter run, 50 bar facing burpee, and then, you know, 50 cal like, oh, whatever. There's not a whole lot to break down. Like it's really just strategy of who you send out. There are a few workouts that we could talk about. Um, but in general, I think people just look forward to the individual competitions.
Starting point is 00:30:52 So I'm not sure like Dubai, I think just is happening and then water Palooza Miami is happening. So we'll need a, we'll need to fill weeks doing talking about other stuff. So if you guys have programming questions, send them to our Instagram, either our Instagram, my personal or JR's personal. We love to have any questions you guys have, or we're going to, we will reveal them on the show.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Jeremy, great question. When's the Charlotte Classic not doing it this year? August has been using HDR CBD Recover on my wrist, and it's been helping a lot. I love that stuff. HDR Recover, it's my favorite salve. Do it all the time, use it all the time. Tomorrow's order, Jackson Drohan, is adrenaline,
Starting point is 00:31:33 then walking. Do you say adrenaline? Adrenaline, dude. Adrenaline? Yeah, I know it's adrenaline. Then walking and dancing. Oh, so it's the split AMRAP. So tomorrow is the strongman, then the split AMRAP, then turfworms,
Starting point is 00:31:51 and that's the lunging squatting one. Okay, all good. Doesn't matter what it is. It's freaking five muscle-ups. Not gonna be an issue. Sick dude. After Norcal, getting back to the roots outside down and dirty on the
Starting point is 00:32:17 lake. Do you wish more competitions did that in less stuffy less like everything is all pretty with like marketing and stuff like that. Or do you do you think there's like, hey, there's some things that I just want to do and not have it be like preparation for I just want to compete. I know how to compete. I don't need practice being corralled. I don't need practice. Advancing advancing the bar, like where are you at on that? Cause it seemed like when you guys got done, you were just like,
Starting point is 00:32:49 that was so much fun. It was so fun. Yeah. Where I am on that is that, you know, there are different elements, you know, having, uh, having the experience competing in a setting that's really similar to semi-finals is good. I don't know though that like what my opinion on that after a weekend like this is that I don't think those instances of advancing a barbell forward or necessarily being corralled have as much of an effect on your weekend as you would think. I think overall on a whole the fittest people at a competition are going to be the fittest.
Starting point is 00:33:29 They're going to rise. And I do really like what I don't like is, you know, there's a lot of things to think about and not being corralled and not having corralled times kind of stresses me out as an athlete because I have to be like really accountable as to when I'm going to be like under the tent and ready to get called. Like you don't get called. So you could just potentially miss your heat and you're done for the weekend. You know what I mean? Um, so you just have to be really on that. That's one negative, but the positive is that it's, I don't know. It's just like, I don't know the feeling of it.
Starting point is 00:33:59 The feeling of it was just like, who's, who's better? You know, it's not like there's no extra fluff. I do like events that make like you get grindy, you do events, things that people have never done before. That was, I think a really cool thing. And that sailors revenge workout. I really thought that was cool. I thought that hang snatch with the kettlebell was a cool twist because I'm not a lot of people do a lot of those. Like, you know, it's just not, and especially with rope climbs, like a super redundant, the trail run was
Starting point is 00:34:27 really cool. It was not like a trail that you would just go out and run on a trail run day. It was like through sand down boulders. Like it was a legit trail run. Um, yeah, it was really grimy. That was nasty. Uh, the swim was cool. I mean, there was just a lot of cool things about it. I like that no one really had time to practice, or at least not a lot of time to practice backward handstand walk bar complex stuff. That was announced with not a ton of time. But just things like that I think are cool. But on the other hand, like your event specifically, I would say your event and this event
Starting point is 00:35:06 are probably my two favorite events I've ever done. Yours because the workouts are always amazing. It's like you have great judging, you handle the athletes really well, the attention to detail is really high. I don't worry about like, okay, another guy's skirting standards and that's giving him points. Like there, there definitely might have been points or times at More Cow where I'm like, not sure. That guy probably had a lot of no reps didn't
Starting point is 00:35:36 get called for it. But I think at the end of the day, it's still the fittest guys were the fittest guys. And yeah, that's something I know there's a lot of there's a lot of pressure put on the competition organizer slash programming to try to like stay true to themselves as a programmer, and what they value, while also making it a movement that isn't very subjective. So it's not relying on the judge, and also not make it too crazy. Like there's a really, really fine line and a balance
Starting point is 00:36:13 because there aren't any written rules yet at least of, that's not a movement that is considered crossfit because by definition crossfit can include so many things that we don't really do. A lot of things. So I said this too when Angelo's on, I have a lot of respect for people that I'll just say take risks in their programming and sometimes they're going to be awesome and sometimes they're not because that's really the that's the only way or you can just be safe and program things that everyone's always done.
Starting point is 00:36:45 So like there's- I like risk takers. And I think Blair and Ben are, and you are too. I like that. I like that you do things that are like, oh shit, you've never done that before. That's cool. Yeah, and I think some of it,
Starting point is 00:36:55 some of it is knowing where the line is and knowing when it's too much and not too much. I like also- Because as long as the, as long as the stuff is the same, like same nylon ropes, same kind of kettlebell, same terrain, like then it works. But I think a lot of times in competitions, there are variables maybe that people aren't thinking about
Starting point is 00:37:20 because whether they haven't tested them or because they've never used them before, it becomes like sandbags bust and you don't have one right there, you can switch out. You know what I mean? Little things like that, I think are even more important than the programming. It's like expecting things to happen
Starting point is 00:37:35 because Taylor had so much fun that he kicked a water bottle. I wonder if this person just heard about it, heard me talking about it on the show or actually saw it. I hope they weren't one of the few people, not even that few probably, probably like 100 people saw it. It was so embarrassing. Yeah. Oh, I also liked how Ben and Blair kept the swim. Me too. I think that's great. And I enjoyed hearing him talk about it on the spin, because that makes a lot of sense to me. And I think you're either on the side that says,
Starting point is 00:38:05 no, let's show everyone that it can be done and people can be safe and not have to worry about it. And then I understand people saying, yeah, let's just stay away from swimming for a while. So. Ortega was there taking lots of sick pictures. He got some pics of me. I'll be posting those and tagging him.
Starting point is 00:38:23 A lot of nude shots. Yeah, he'll be posting those and tagging him a lot of nude shots yeah he'll be here for crucible with Ryan draw your dagger taking taking pics on site so yeah it'll be here it'll be here soon I'm antsy for sure and excited to go ahead and get the workouts out but I know that I shouldn't get him out too early so I think two weeks good yeah two weeks is definitely good gives everybody a chance to do them and not many people have a chance to run their head into the dirt doing them. Uh, like you can if you're like a week three semi-final, but all right.
Starting point is 00:38:51 I mean, for me, that's it. You got anything else? Nope. Thanks so much for the sponsors. Proven business plans. They'll be sponsoring crash crucible. Brooks Manley marketing. We talked about that special he's got going on right now, but you gotta go to
Starting point is 00:39:04 the website, uh, to see what that is. Pat Barber, the knowledge, mentoring the one and only Taylor Self. Yeah, we did our first session today. Oh really, how'd that go? It was great. Did he watch a class that you did? Yeah, I videoed a class. I don't have my phone on me.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Yeah, I videoed a class. I'll just give some of the notes. These are things that I hadn't thought about previously like Andy gives me different feedback He made a couple points I saw I you know, I briefly taught a couple things at the whiteboard Not over crazy. My whiteboard brief was under five minutes was still good But there are some things he was like, hey, you're gonna have to repeat that before you start the workout Anyway, so you might as well just save it for there
Starting point is 00:39:44 Other couple things were like when teaching a progression start the workout anyway, so you might as well just save it for there. Other couple things were like when teaching a progression, I wasn't overly wordy, but there was some room for hey, instead of telling them in such detail what to do, just have them do it first and then educate while they're doing it. There was one point where I was having him do progressions and I could have lined him up in a more efficient manner to see kind of movement faults a little better. Oh and then the big thing, two big things for me were like during a general warmup when people are just kind of quiet and doing you know whatever band of good
Starting point is 00:40:13 mornings or this or that that's a good opportunity to connect with people and kind of build that sense of community. It's just kind of dead space they're doing exercises that they don't need a lot of teaching or coaching on but it's an opportunity to talk and And then threshold training, which is being like as a coach. And this is a, not a new concept for me, but one that I haven't focused a ton on. Cause you have athletes that kind of sit in their box of what they're comfortable with and you know what they're comfortable with and they know.
Starting point is 00:40:40 And it's you get complacent, but making sure each athlete has an individual adaptation or scale or modification for the workout to make it best for them. Even if it's like an RX plus person, like there's having touch points on each athlete saying that way every athlete leaves class saying, Holy crap, I got a lot of coaching or this workout was individualized to me. Um, you know, if you have 12 people in a class, you can easily do that. I'm typically it's like reserved for the 80 year olds or the You know, if you have 12 people in a class, you can easily do that. Typically, it's like reserved for the 80 year old
Starting point is 00:41:06 or the new person. But you know, you could go to the experienced person and say, hey, that 135 is looking really easy today. Why don't you go on 45? Or 135 is looking like crap and you're typically a good mover, but maybe today's not the day. Go a little lighter so you go faster.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Stuff like that. Yeah. Essentially, you said that. I found myself today in the classwork that. Yeah. Essentially you said that. I found myself today in the class work that I programmed. It's a hard one to advise. And people are asking you like, hey, I can do strict pull-ups, but like weighted strict pull-ups with a 53 or a 35
Starting point is 00:41:42 or 30 reps after keeping chest of bar. Like I have no idea if I can do that or not. Yeah. And you have just you have to give them a plan and then a backup plan. So like, hey, I know you can crank out strict pull ups. It's always better to go faster. Let's just let's just plan on the weighted pull ups being really, really tough from the beginning and use a lighter weight. And if you have to just strip the belt and go straight, go, you know, do that. Like, I think it's good for, like you're saying to go around and be like, hey,
Starting point is 00:42:12 like you've been using that band for a long time. Let's take that away today and just see what happens. Do something different. Yeah, for sure. Right. Hi, I got to go do Glenton and Things podcast at 5 30. You guys, we're going to talk politics. It's gonna be great.
