Welcome to the science behind your salad.
The series is about food.
The podcast explores every nation, every crop in the world.
The challenges of growing food in today's context
and really the future security of growing.
I don't think there are many podcasts that really get under the skin of food
like this podcast does.
Be sure to follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey folks, welcome to the Sloppy Boys where we take a deep dive into the drinks that you love.
I'm Jeff Dutton along with Michael Hanford.
And Tim Kalpakis.
What is up?
You can probably tell because of the acoustics.
We're in the same exact room.
And we're warm.
We're getting a little warm.
We're getting a little hot, a little tired.
It's hot.
It's hot in LA.
Is it?
Yes, but we're not getting tired.'re amped we're partying it's a celebration episode 201 yeah we've got we've got
episode the sun is setting on episode 200 it's goodbye it's high energy george w bush
he's the cocaine brother so yeah right he's high energy let me tell you about some heat stuff i
went on i was staying at uh dave ferguson's house yeah he's up in the ferglundsman he's up into some
hills it's sunny there it's hot as can be let's just give his address no i wouldn't i couldn't
even saying the hills i think it's too dangerous uh i was there i was uh taking a jog yesterday
sunday and it was not a good time.
It was probably noon.
And I had,
but we had gone to the movies the night before.
I ate a bunch of,
it sounds like a great jog day.
Well,
hold on.
I was,
you know,
I,
we had a bunch of salty snacks the night before.
This is one of those jogs where I took a splash of water in my mouth and I
said,
I'm ready.
I go out for this jog and I have been running in LA for a long time and it
got too hot for me. Yeah. So on the way back, I'm like, okay, I got to walk.
And then you start getting the like white flashes.
And I was like looking at my phone. I was like,
I got 15 minutes to walk back to Dave's house. All right.
And then eventually I just went into someone's house,
like knocked on their door was like, I need some water, man.
Holy shit. Wow, dude. I was like, I, I, it's, I'm like sweat. And I need water. He's like, are you going to heat stroke? I was like i i it's i'm like sweat and i need water he's like are you
gonna eat stroke i was like just i need water and he got some wow but he did it he it was funny it
took him like a little while to come but he came out with a glass of ice water and like a cold uh
neck towel and were you like i was hoping for evian. All I needed was some water.
I was fine.
But he was like an EMT,
like a former EMT.
Great house pick.
Yeah.
But the thing,
I was waiting to see someone in their yard and I'd say,
hey, can you grab me a bottle of water?
But no one was outside
because it was so hot.
It's good you got him
and not somebody who's just like,
sure, you live around here, son?
Yeah.
We don't have water,
but we have hot sauce.
That's exactly the problem. You don't take kindly, but we have hot sauce. That's exactly.
You don't take kindly to outsiders.
So you got to be careful out there.
It's no joke.
That's scary when you realize you're past the point of no return.
We're like, I'm hot.
And you're like, oh, I'm too hot.
Well, right.
It was, it was like, I was like, I better take care of this right now before I'm woken up on a lawn in a few minutes.
Damn, that's scary.
Or in a shallow grave.
Yeah.
Well, it's, it's one of those things, too,
where my mom will always be like,
or any mom is just like,
yeah, heat stroke's a real thing.
Who's getting a heat stroke?
Just drink some water. You hear about people
hiking in the Grand Canyon
or, hey, even Griffith Park
hiking. It happens a lot of hiking.
You forget that the sun is a mighty
beast. Did you notice the the air you were breathing was any different the smog i'm asking
about oh i don't know i think when it's hot like like this i've just it's hot air and i can't tell
there's a lot of hot air blowing in here right now you said that the night before you had been
to a movie but we should clarify not just any movie it was we went to a drive-in movie and we
snuck you in in the trunk stuck me in classic part of the thing he was in the trunk because i
couldn't i think that it was all sold out by the time we were going and you guys all had tickets
i was like well i still want to go uh it was so fun we were in an suv where mike could like lay
in the back and then we like pulled down the you you know, it's like a curtain of canvas over him.
And then we piled the chairs on top.
So there's no way they're going to find Mike.
But when the security guard peeked in the back window, we are like,
I was in there just sweating.
But then our plan was had they found Mike, I had a ticket in my email.
So I forwarded my email to Mike.
So we were going to say if they found Mike,
we're just going to have him show my ticket.
And then I would pretend I didn't have one.
So then Mike just be like,
no,
this is just how I ride.
And then I heard from in the truck,
I heard that plan being sort of formulated.
I heard like,
maybe like,
yeah,
we'll just say like there wasn't a room in the seat.
So we have to go to the truck.
So we can move the stuff from the seat in the trunk.
And there's just like an empty middle seat in the car but then
you have chairs piled on i thought it was a seating issue not a ticketing issue that's
a ticket i didn't and i and then look i wouldn't do that usually but it was because we were all
here and it's not you know it's just sitting in a big field i was taking up a space on the lawn
i think is what i was paying yeah we were tightly squeezed it was funny then once we parked there was still a lot of a yellow shirt security guys all around
us and the way mike got out was like we all got out of the car and then flipped the back seat
forward so mike could roll forward and then came up with the bag of pretzels and guys you forgot
the pretzels in here like because the security guys Would be like Oh he's just out of breath Because he was searching
So hard for the pretzels
He went so deep
Into the back of that
SUV
Rolled gold by the way
Wait did we mention
What we saw?
No
We didn't even mention
What we saw
And maybe we never will
It's time for booze news
Folks we saw
True Romance
Yeah
Tony Scott
Written by Quentin Tarantino
With a
Cavalcade of stars.
Yeah, real cavalcade. We got our
prescriptions guy in there.
Prescriptions?
Who else? We had Cousin
Balky. He was in there.
That's a sleeper hit for me.
I hadn't seen it. I'd seen some scenes
probably online or something, but it was a good
movie. I saw it when I was a kid. I enjoyed it.
DVD era. Me too. And then I enjoyed it dvd era me too and then i
enjoyed it and more this time but then also uh weird to watch an old movie with a big crowd so
that when they hit on some of the stuff that has not aged well yeah the tension in a in a big crowd
like that yeah there were there were some there were some words that you just do not say anymore and it was it was shocking and some big laughs on those lines that were like discomfort laughs
but also but also like hey don't telegraph it so much it sounds like the wrong laugh if you
laugh too loud right right right right i don't know there's no good way to jeez jim you can't
even say anything more now you can't even laugh anymore you can't laugh at anything anymore you can't laugh at anything that's the problem with comedy you can't laugh at anything
anymore yeah that was a fun uh that's one of those things i would always not do because it's like i
gotta get a blanket and probably a cooler and i don't want to do that but when you got a group
going it's fun yeah it's good because i usually want to go by myself well like i never go to the
beach i live out here and i don't go to the beach. I live out here.
I don't go to the beach.
Right, right, right.
Occasionally, once every two, three years, a friend will be like, come on, Jeff.
We're getting out to the beach.
We're going to have some steaks.
Entire summers go by and you're never in the water.
Absolutely.
This year you haven't been.
I haven't been.
Tim, you've been?
Hell yeah.
We could change that.
Yeah.
You go to the beach?
Yeah, I do.
You know what?
I try to do it early
in the summer
just so that I don't
because if the summer ends
and I didn't
then I beat myself.
You don't give a fuck.
I still haven't had my Slurpee.
My summer Slurpee, by the way.
Your summer Slurpee?
Let's go to
hey, let's do a blowout.
Those are easier to come by.
Yes, they are.
Now, we've talked about this before.
The reason Slurpees are so good
is because the frozen bits
are frozen beverage.
That's the drink itself
folks yeah look no further than the the ice chips themselves you melt that down you're still getting
that taste you love wow not as cold you melt those down you could make the next batch of
never mind you can make the next batch of uh meth like. Ooh. Like Walt?
Walt.
But sometimes, you know, they tell you, hey, for iced coffee, don't freeze water into cubes and put it in your drink.
Freeze coffee.
So when it melts, it just creates more coffee.
But then, have you tried it?
No.
You're going to end up with some greasy, brown, stinking ice cube trays.
It's nasty. I also like it. I like the cubes to dilute ice cube trays. It's nasty.
I also like,
I like the cubes to dilute as they melt.
That's fun.
Yeah.
And it's like,
it's uneven and it's like,
you know,
cause coffee is very oily.
What about this for an idea?
You get a rum and Coke or let's say like a screwdriver or something and you
have the orange juice,
the cubes are frozen.
Put that in.
Yeah.
That would be good with a very good vodka because then you could sip that and then. That'd be be good with a very good uh vodka because then
you could sip that and then that'd be very good with a very good anything very good ingredients
make very good drink well are we getting some booze news sure yep but also just reminder we're
celebrating this is a big celebratory episode uh high energy celebratory yes because the movie's
out thanks for everybody for uh buying multiple
copies showing it to your friends give me those gifts apple amazon you're watching the movie
you're telling your friends you cinephile friends you know i actually like film oh really well you
would like the sloppy boys movie i'll check that out i'll turn it on going to a screening of
true romance yeah we saw a lot of guys there.
Oh, we're at True Romance now.
True Romance.
Okay, okay, okay.
We wish it was your guys' movie.
Shut up.
We know.
The movie has started.
Booze News, hit it.
Can you play a song
with a fucking beat?
Everybody get on off the floor hey Everybody get on off the floor
Everybody get on off the floor
Everybody get your ass to the door
Everybody get your ass to the door
Ooh, nice
Everybody better make some room
Yeah, make fucking way
Everybody better clear out
Yeah, step aside, okay
Did you hear me play the fucking beat?
I'm King, bitch Don't fucking bitch! I'm King Bitch!
Don't kick her off!
I'm King Bitch!
Don't kick her off!
I'll rain down
like grass
a royal shitstorm!
It's booze news,
you iconic
pieces of shit!
Ah!
Alright, uh, you iconic pieces of shit. Alright.
Bitchin' Aminon was sent to us by
Tom from Redondo. We know that guy.
That's the Mastabong Rippa
Beat Saber guy.
And if you
have a Booze News theme, email it
to thesloppyboyspodcast.gmail.com
If people want to play
the Mastabong Rippa in master bong ripper in their beat saber
in their oculus how can they do that can they download that i suppose they could yeah i don't
know i don't know i don't think we did it when we had because i think you had an old oculus version
maybe that wouldn't do it yeah when it was here we had it i forget yeah but he made it so that
the people could play it not just him right right right but yeah you just go on there and
download it i don't know that's the thing about time from redondo he cares about the people could play it, not just him. Right, right, right. So yeah. You just go on there and download it.
That's the thing about Tom from Redondo.
He cares about the people, you know?
Yeah, true.
That mashup sounded pretty on key at first, and then something happened.
And then the chorus was just, it felt like they-
That may have been the singer.
I think we just sort of sucked all the melody out of my voice.
Was I just singing one note that whole time?
Well, you know, sometimes on sheet music you'll
see there's like you know there's the note and then sometimes it'll be that the note is an x
with a tail on it yeah and that sort of means atonal that's probably what we did with your
like drummers like drummers read that oh yeah i sang i sang i sang percussively
at the at the very end when you're like ah was that when you got shocked by the
the collar maybe oh yeah sound like i don't mean collar you're like, ah, was that when you got shocked by the collar maybe?
Oh, yeah.
Sounded like.
I didn't mean collar.
You're on the air.
No, like a collar.
You're on a dog.
I also screamed like that in Chicago when I was trying to sing doot and doot and doot do ah from Loving You.
Tim, that's a very, I'm glad you brought that up.
I've got a little piece of something I want to play for you guys.
Actually, you've got the thing. This is, I'm going to brought that up I've got a little piece of something I want to play for you guys Actually you've got the thing
This is I'm going to jump ahead in the order here
Because it works so well
Yeah it's great
This was sent to me by my mom today
She's been listening to the episodes
And she must have just gotten on to the
Chicago one she sent me this
For you guys for all of us
Hey Mike
Tim and Jeff Here's what i have to say to you
do do do do do
can't sing that anymore i always hated that song congratulations on the win mike
congratulations on the win mike she listens Congratulations on the win, Mike.
She usually listens on a walk, so she was probably out there and you could hear a lot of wind blowing.
Yeah, she gave it a shot.
I hated that song.
That's so funny that you would totally expect your mom to be like, yeah, that's the song I love.
Always hear that song.
Good job, Mike.
Thank you, Mom.
Proud.
I'll share the lottery winnings with you later um for
those who don't know it was last week in uh two weeks ago in chicago we had a singing competition
and mike beat me in singing do do do do ah and not the mentos commercial oh yes wow there must
have been a lawsuit about that one i think when you first started doing that in the i either said
it in the microphone i was like like, is that Mentos?
When we were doing that live.
No, it's Minnie Rifferton.
Yep.
Yep.
Maya Rudolph's mom.
Yep.
Maya's mom.
PT's mother-in-law.
Mm-hmm.
Hmm.
Loving you.
Ooh.
You guys ever play songs for your parents?
I was,
I like to watch YouTube videos if i'm just
like hanging out rather than like hey let's put on a show it's like if we're drinking we're talking
just put on music videos you get more stimulus in the conversation pay attention or don't you know
hey i saw one once i'll put that one on so i forget it i think it's called vjing right like
come on and so i'm so i'm vjing for my parents right and i'm playing old songs expecting to like
burn the fucking house down like like i bet you didn't know stevie dan had a video or like
credence clearwater revival whatever and my mom at one point kind of groans it was just like
it's like oh yeah like oh these songs and i was like i'm playing them for you
and uh i was like you you love this song and she was like yeah 20 years ago oh shit it was like, I'm playing them for you. And I was like, you love this song.
And she was like, yeah, 20 years ago.
Oh, shit.
I was like, mom, I'm getting roasted here.
She's like, it's not like you're still listening to Jamiroquai, right?
That's the thing.
If I like a song, I like it forever.
Very honorable.
I like it to the day I die.
You're so loyal.
I stick to it.
Was your dad like, hey, I'm still listening to uh cheers in heaven
honestly that's such a dad song from 95 oh didn't he wait it wasn't that didn't he have that cd in
the car yes of course didn't every dad or was that just my idea but but uh i don't think he had a cd
player hashtag not all dads um no this but but this makes me think, I think our generation, like nostalgia is speeding up, you know, like they went and got jobs and we're like, I don't need to listen
to rush all the day.
I work at a bank now and then they can rediscover it because they went away.
They went away.
Our generation, we don't go away.
Right.
We don't go away.
We got the stick-to-itiveness.
It is crazy by the time I get out of bed,
people in the bank play Pokemon. Now I know I pray, you know,
I practice the unfortunate behavior where I open my eyes in the morning and
the phone is right in my face. You probably shouldn't be doing that.
I stand up first. Well, Hey,
it's the last thing you do before you go to bed. That's true.
And kind of while I'm sleeping, I have a little snoozy scroll, but,
but yeah, like the first thing
I do when I wake up is look at that thing so I've probably heard you know 10 songs somehow
yeah you've heard it's like no oh no no no no no but it's just funny to think of like what you're
saying Jeff like in the old days people would go away from music now it's just kind of constantly
around you never go away enough to come back. Yep.
You know, it's a boomer musical behavior that my parents does. Sway music.
Are we talking about boomer musical behavior?
This is a good segment.
Boomer behavior.
The stamp comes down.
I've noticed this thing my dad will do is like, you know, music is always like inspired.
You're inspired by something. You you're gonna sound like your influences my dad will like i want to identify the influences
and just only respect the influences but not the person making the reference so like i was in the
car i never try to play music that i think my parents will like but i'll pick stuff that i
think is inoffensive if i'm driving it's my's my rental car. I need to listen to music.
Parents are piled in the back and I'm putting something on that.
I'm going to try to not have them be too sad.
So I was playing,
I was this,
uh,
July I was driving and, um,
it was on that,
that Saratoga trip.
Um,
and I put on the new vampire weekend album.
I didn't get a good a good 17 mile saunter there um i put on the new vampire
weekend album thing and this is parent safe and then um my dad was like uh this guy's voice kind
of tim have you ever listened to uh stephen bishop and i was like stephen bishop who's that he's like
he sings like on and on and i was like oh like a yacht rock song like on and on oh
yeah oh yeah and i was like i like that guy and he's like yeah this guy's kind of sounds like him
i was like oh yeah kind of like they're both kind of like singing softer high voices and i was like
yeah then my dad's like well could we put put steven bishop on so i put some steven bishop on
and then like the next day i was listening to vampire week. And again, he's like, well, can we listen to Stephen Bishop?
It's like,
it's like,
I like,
but I'm like in general,
like I remember like playing Weezer in the car and be like,
it sounds like the cars.
Why don't we just listen to the cars?
You know?
Like,
like he would only listen to the original.
Yeah.
That's interesting.
Really?
When you're like,
well,
Rico casing from the cars produce this album.
Is that something?
He's like,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, He's like, no, no, no. Like it does nothing for them.
That's funny.
Wait, what's on and on real quick?
I don't know, but it sounds like Michael Jackson singing.
I'm confusing it with that song that's like,
I keep holding on.
Oh, yeah.
That's like another.
That's like a.
That almost sounds like it could also be like.
Summer breeze. Like you could mix it
with that
yeah
somebody should make
a mashup of that
crooners
go ahead mike
crooner
i got nothing
i don't think
i forgot what i was saying
well i got a
news story that i wanted
to uh
touch upon
good good
i got a
there's another drink
that i've been out there
sniffing around
and uh
in the drink of the summer conversation here's one that has just come up just enough for me to
need to flag it for us.
First seeing it on, like people say, Oh, this was on this menu.
And then a couple of like videos of people making it, but most notably like articles
floating.
This is, Hey, this is maybe one of them.
Um, have you guys heard of the lone Ranger?
No, I've heard of the lone Rangersanger no i've heard of the lone rangers
the lawn wranglers i've heard of uh is that the band from airheads yeah and what's the
long wranglers that's from rocket which i saw is playing somewhere at vidiot's see that oh
not when i'm here but uh we can't go it's later in august saturday night oh damn sad i think well i'll have to watch it on
my little tv maybe friday listen to this drink guys the lone ranger uh is tequila lemon simple
syrup and sparkling rose now mike doesn't like sparkling wine but he did recently say he likes
rose he admitted it so now wait a minute say Say those things again. Tequila, lemon, simple syrup
and sparkling rosé. So you
got like a tequila sour with spark. It's almost
like a Mexican take on a
French 75 in a way. But Tonga
was something like that too, was it not?
That's tequila and coke
with lime and lime.
Now we should do this one.
I think we should do this because it's getting some buzz
and it sounds, me, that sounds
nice and refreshing, a late summer thing.
It also sounds like, you know, if you're, if you, let's say you've been watching a movie
that takes place in Texas, like a, one of these rock docs that takes place in West Texas,
a drink called the Lone Ranger kind of fits in with that vibe.
So good.
You have your friends over, you force them to watch the Sloppy Boys movie, but then as a consolation
you make them some Lone Ranger. And by the end they say
we should be forcing you to watch
that movie. Yes, if we
do that, I'm going to take the
non-sparkling option for the
rosé. Flat rosé.
Sad.
Very sad. You could always open the bottle,
leave it overnight. That's true.
I'll leave it to you
i'll leave it to me leave it to beaver um i've got a little bit of booze news this is a bit of
a follow-up however didn't you already have a segment uh yeah but that was just kind of a fun
that was that was more of uh that's that was just that was supposed to be the end where it's like
and here's a fun little thing but now this is this is not now this is not fun. This is not fun. Journalism. Serious journalism.
Have you two heard of the ruby daiquiri?
Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby.
Now see if you recognize
these
ingredients. Light white
rum, di serrano,
orgeat, lime juice, pink grapefruit
juice. What the fuck?
That's a hand slammer. Now listen to this.
Light white rum we use
spiced rice drop we made that distinction a long time ago this has both or shot and a long time
ago and lime and grapefruit yeah hanford pumped his fist a little bit when he said spiced rum we
used spiced rum like it's for the people but also the the dimensions are a little off as well
proportions are a little off too so remember when when i brought the hand slammer to you guys i said
this has got to be a drink this is gonna i swear to god because we liked it so much yeah this is
probably the closest we're gonna come somebody somebody on uh on x think, tagged me or tagged us in it. That site's full of filth.
I know, but it is a nice come to reality moment for us
where we kind of saw this coming
and we got probably to the ceiling on that.
Now, are you looking at that saying
this is parallel thinking by me and another mixologist or are you saying that maybe
you ripped that unknowingly i don't think i ripped it unknowingly because i wouldn't have
i i don't know that much about like i wouldn't have seen that somewhere and been like oh it's
gonna stick with me so you were just looking at your shelf of the shit you had right yeah
what's this one called again the ruby daiquiri probably from the ruby red grape i prefer the
name handslayer but ruby daiquiri is a nice ruby red grapefruit i prefer the name handslayer
but ruby daiquiri is a nice name yeah but it doesn't look it doesn't look so rubyish
it's kind of i guess like shit based on how much of that ruby red grapefruit use and let's see
that's pretty funny that it's all the that the only difference is the type of rum
you're you know what mike i've decided you're a thief. And the proportion.
But no, no, I'm not a thief because I said
at the beginning of the summer, this is probably
taken. And that wasn't, you know,
I would have to be
running a political campaign
and be a veteran at it to have
that type of forethought.
Wait, did you check the date on that?
Maybe they're thieving you.
Oh, probably not
i'll look it up but and also the it's different that's on difference that's legit different
oh what it's on difference but oh the difference is different that's their slogan difference is
difference and this is this is more of a this is a dry sour no no you need a sweet tiki yeah so look i think it's going to be a little different
it's not going to be that dry with orgeat and amaretto in there they're doing a third
and a sixth of orgeat and a third of disaronno and a fourth of this is all ounces fourth ounces
of lime juice so we were doing half ounces we were doing the full ounces yeah yeah yeah it's
so different we're in the
clear we're in the clear yeah like it's like they have nothing to do with each other i'm looking for
a fucking shoulder here man not a i don't need one more person telling me you did it wrong he
walks his shoulder he's getting a sharp elbow that's right that's right this is this is not
a time to say hey you need a new suit this is a the time to say, I love the suit. Is that your buddy who said that? Oh yeah.
This happens a lot in comedy writing rooms though.
When you're like, well, you write a joke and then you find out someone did the joke and
then you're trying so hard to make it sound different.
Like, but they didn't listen.
But it's like, well, we both came up with that joke because it's a similar situation.
These people are in.
I say, fuck it.
Well, is that it for Booze News?
Wrap it up.
And with Booze News out of the way,
some good news this week.
Yeah, really good.
Now let's turn our attention towards, hmm,
I don't know.
Anything speak to you?
The blank is the blank.
The D of the D?
The blank of the blank.
The D of the D, folks.
It's time for the drink of the week.
Oh, we're celebrating here.
We're celebrating.
We got a movie out.
What a run.
In the world of this pod, our 199th episode was in Chicago.
Our first live ever.
Then we did, we had Uzo and celebrated Opa Stylies for our 200th episode.
Now here we think, well, time to stop celebrating.
No, we got a movie and we're, and we're taking a victory lap.
We have, if you're a slop head, a slop boys, a slop man fan,
a sloppy boys fan, you got
an album last year.
You're getting a movie this year.
We've been touring all over the place.
What more do you want from us?
Well, maybe I'll think about joining the Patreon.
You're not there yet is what I say to that.
That's weird.
You're not fucking there yet?
I'm sorry to say this, and I know that Democrats have co-opted this word but you're weird oh you're weird we had to do it to him yeah freaky yeah
freaky yeah what if that's what the what the conservatives started saying by the liberals
yeah freaky the democrats are freaky it's back and forth yeah Yeah, well, you're nasty. You're a nasty man. Now you're weird.
Okay.
La Bandera, you've had?
No.
Have had.
Have had? I think you've had, too.
Where?
El Chavito.
Well, I know.
I don't think I've had.
It's like, I want to talk about what it is.
Well, you've heard.
Oh, yeah, yes, yes, yes. I think we're going to talk about what it is. Well, you've heard. Oh, yeah. Yes.
I think we're going to this episode.
Bandera.
Or something like that.
Refuse refers to cocktail.
Bandera shots.
Right.
Or no, I think it's just Bandera because.
And then we're choosing to do them as shots.
We're taking shot option.
Or whatever you want to say on that.
Whatever looks good on the thing.
But I've seen this referred to as La Bandera, La Bandera Dita, or Bandera shots.
But some people choose to sip it.
And that is rather odd to have three little shot glasses you're sipping from.
But it's fine if you want to do it.
But we are talking about the Bandera is you're going to have three shot glasses with three colors.
And we're talking lime juice, tequila, and sangrita.
And, oh, do those happen to be green, white, and red?
Are those the color of the Mexican flag?
Does bandera mean flag?
Oh, it does.
Yes.
Ah.
Yes, green, clear, and red, just like the Mexican flag.
It's always transparent.
Big blank space in the middle.
Saran wrap middle section.
Well, Mike, you mentioned Difford's Guide.
Sure.
So I'll dive back in there and tell you what they say about this drink.
Ever since we left the IBA, I think Difford's has been good.
Liquor.com has helped us.
I've been in such a better mood doing these.
Yeah, me too. We're free of the
shackles. Here's what the history
according, the history of the
Bandera according to Differeds.
It says, a popular and classic way of
serving tequila in Mexico.
Bandera is Spanish for flag
and the Bandera de Mexico
is of course green, white, and red.
Hence the three glasses. Lime juice, Blanco tequila, and sangrita.
I just settled this different.
Here we go.
The Bandera is also drunk to celebrate Mexican Independence Day
with the green lime juice representing the independence movement
and the red sangrita chaser representing the blood of the national heroes
appropriately sangrita means little blood in spanish and sangrita is served with tequila in
practically every bar in mexico so this stuff that we're gonna make uh which is sangrita is
essentially like orange juice pomegranate juice, lime juice, tomato juice, bunch of spices and
stuff. It's more popular.
I didn't know of it outside of this drink, but
I think in Mexico, it's
a popular chaser for tequila,
which I didn't know. When I had done this in the
past, I thought it was hot sauce, and that was
just part of it. It was like lime, tequila, and hot
sauce. And that might have been the poor man's
version, but I think that El Chavo was probably
doing it properly with Sangrita. I think think so and then maybe we just didn't know because by the time
you get to that one you've had a lot of weird shit in your mouth but uh i was picturing like
like kind of like a uh bloody mary mix that's what i think it was was bloody mary mix but i
wonder if they if they did even put in the oj or pomegranate or grenadine but that one um el el chavito was the bar side of
a mexican restaurant called el chavo in los filas actually on that side of the street that's
technically silver lake i believe um but uh we love that place it was it was dolly parton's
favorite restaurant in la and there was a big picture of her behind the bar on the restaurant side.
Is that where she met Jolene?
Stop that.
She looked like she liked Jolene.
Hey, Jolene.
That's how he even steals her man.
Are you Jolene? Yeah. Don't take my man.
We've brought up the Bandera
shots there before on the pod because I think
I once told a story of...
I feel like I have heard of them. it's not like i did the shots a lot and i i've
only seen it and heard of it there and i too at the time kind of thought it was just like um
tapatio but uh there was one night and i've talked about on pod where this is like 10 years ago um
chicago comedy guy chris witasky was in town you may know
him as uh abby elliott's husband on the bear oh um the bear and he was in town and i had a you
know i'm proud of my my my home so i wanted this chicago guy to have a fun time in la so we were
hanging out at el chivito and i was like hey hey but tasky here let me get you a drink and he's
like okay and then i ordered him a bandera shot and we did them together and he's like wow and
he's like isn't that fun he's like yeah wow and i was like isn't that so cool and he's like yeah
and then i'm like let me show you something else i bring over the tiki tea and uh i ordered the
drink at the tiki tea that makes everyone go toro toro toro i'm screaming and i'm like isn't that
fun and he's like uh you know tim you can just order me a normal drink i think he just wanted a beer and i was bringing to all these uh uh these novelty
drink situations great when the bandera comes out that's like it catches people's eyes you're
gonna turn heads if you get a bandera at a bar it's like it's like ordering fajitas at a restaurant
where you hear that like you're buying everybody's like whoa i'm on that man you're buying the you're buying the uh bump in uh
popularity yeah man you'll see if you get them it creates this like waterfall effect now everybody's
getting them because you got them isn't that awesome the bartender's like you're like can
we have he's like i already got them this happens quite a lot. They must hate making them.
Well, it's just three.
It's just three different shots.
Three times the work.
Yeah, right, right.
Three shot glasses per person.
I wonder how they'd price this out.
What was the drink we talked about?
That effect of like people seeing it and ordering, I want that.
One piece.
Was it Arnold Palmer?
That was, they said that somebody saw there was a day at a diner in Palm Springs where
everyone saw what Arnold Palmer ordered and said, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. And then suddenly the whole restaurant was drinking Arnold Palmer. That was, they said that somebody saw there was a day at a diner in Palm Springs where everyone saw what Arnold Palmer ordered and said, Oh yeah. And then suddenly the whole
restaurant was drinking Arnold. Isn't that a Sopranos thing too? Somebody orders an Arnold
Palmer. And then the other person says like, I like those. It never occurs to me to order those.
Oh yeah. It's the guy from Florida. Yeah. Carmine. He's from Miami or something. He
looks down. He wears like pink polos and Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Polo club.
I thought we were talking about,
uh,
car,
Kanye West,
Kanye Asada,
Kanye West.
So,
so wait a second.
We've done it.
I've done the shots there.
Mike,
you have not me and Jeff have done them there.
I'm excited.
Do you have any questions?
Mike,
you just ask your boys.
Well, yeah, I'm definitely going to have you guys do them first.
I'll be like, oh, okay, I'll do that.
Yeah, I'm good.
Okay, I got to tell you guys.
Is there an order to it?
Well, that's the thing.
If you let them finish.
To me.
Well, I was doing my question.
I think you go in flag order of green, clear, red.
It says that red is the chaser.
I thought I was
under the impression
that when I did it
at El Chavito
that it was tequila,
then lime,
then sangrita.
I'd like to end
on sangrita
because I want to
be left with that taste.
It feels weird
to do the liquor
and then lime
and then a chaser.
Like it should be,
I think it should be lime.
I think it's lime,
liquor,
sangrita,
but lime,
a shot of lime juice is kind of intense.
Like an ounce and a half of lime juice.
Normally when you bite the lime, it's at the end of a shot.
Right.
You salt shot lime.
We're flipping it.
Let me tell you this. In my Googling today,
it looked like doing shots is actually more rare.
I saw multiple things being like,
yeah, you just serve someone these three things
and they just sip them. They go back and forth sipping and forth that's so weird to me that you would be sipping
on one tequila shot and a lime juice and a lime juice silly i think i feel like i think we go
green white red if something's in a shot glass and it's front of me it's getting shot yeah i don't
sip on those i mean it may go down two shots but it's quick too okay it's that
do you guys want to hear um i am such a wonderful man that i already prepared the sangrita for us
today made it from scratch with premium ingredients so this should be great this
should be the real deal we were just saying yeah good drinks are made with good ingredients
yeah uh you can't just put two goods make it hot like papa john okay so i don't know
jeff you're gonna have a headache trying to make a graphic for this one or you let me worry about
okay because basically what you're gonna have is a shot like we're calling shots are like an ounce
and a half right so you have a shot of uh lime juice a shot of tequila, Diffords, and you know you've got to squeeze
that fresh lime juice, guys.
Diffords says use Patron Silver Blanco
tequila, so that's what I got.
I had to get somebody to help me get it out of the case
at Albertsons. Patron.
And then, your third shot,
the Sangrita, here's how you make
one serving of it, but I
multiplied this by six because I
wanted all three of us to have
two rounds,
but here is with
a hiccup,
half ounce tomato juice,
half ounce pomegranate juice,
quarter ounce orange juice,
half ounce lime juice,
one spoon or five milliliters grenadine,
two drops, hot pepper sauce there two dash
worcestershire sauce one pinch salt one pinch black pepper guys for our grenadine syrup i
didn't use roses i got some kind of nice looking pomegranate uh grenadine and for our hot pepper
sauce i searched my soul and i figured that tapatio would be the way to go great nice this
is gonna be this is to taste more like a,
uh,
Bloody Mary.
Bloody Mary than I thought.
Cause it's a Bloody Mary mix with pomegranate,
orange juice.
Everything else is pretty much standard Bloody Mary.
Yeah.
It seems like it.
Yeah.
It's funny that there's lime in that mix,
but we're also doing a lime shot.
That doesn't seem,
that's odd.
That seems weird.
Well,
they're related.
They're,
they're friends.
The,
the,
the,
the grenadine and the oj in there jeff you
very astutely earlier said is it like chamoy i think we're gonna have a chamoy-esque type
the sweetness it's like bloody mary mix with grenadine and pomegranate juice so tell me what
chamoy chamoy chamoy sauce at a fruit cart it's the hot sauce they drizzle it's got a thickness
to it yes i i never
have that but yeah you don't have uh it's been popular lately for me popular and says i've had
it once this summer is a pizza with hot honey drip like um oh the chili honey chili yes oh my
god somebody had it i was like oh this is gonna be stupid and i tried i said this is very good
that's a very trendy thing right now yeah i bought a thing of zab's hot honey and i was like i'm putting this on everything it really only goes on like chicken tenders and
pepperoni pizza it's just like but i tried other things and it just doesn't go crinkle cut fries
oh oh that i had them oh shit did we put the uh tequila in the freezer? Yes. Oh, Timmy thought of everything.
Yum.
And is there anything else to be said?
We said all the stuff.
We said all the things.
I think we're pretty good.
Great.
So, folks, why don't you listen to the ads?
We're going to go to the freezer, get out the tequila.
We're going to take all the freshly squeezed lime juice and set up these beautiful Bandera shots.
And when we come back, first sips. sips we come back you can listen to us drink
welcome to the science behind your salad the series is about food. The podcast explores every nation, every crop in the world, the challenges of growing
food in today's context, and really the future security of growing. I don't think there are many
podcasts that really get under the skin of food like this podcast does. Be sure to follow and
subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back with Bandera shots perched just so.
Yeah.
Folks.
This was, we had our, we got, what would you call these shot glasses that we have from
Jose Cuervo, leftover from our infamous Jose Cuervo?
Like how would you describe them?
They're like classic blue rimmed, blown.
Yeah.
They're irregular blown glass with a rim pink, with a blue rim.
Yeah.
They are regular.
And I wonder if you, if we went to where these were made, like they have like a bunch of this shape and a bunch of rim. Yeah. They are regular and I wonder if we went to where these were made
like they have like a bunch
of this shape and a bunch of this shape.
I'm sure it's just...
Some are markedly larger than the other ones.
Yeah.
I know too. We had to like actually not just like fill a shot
like actually had to measure out shots because
they're all so different. And I wanted to make sure that we
we had regulation
tequila shots.
What order do we agree on lime shot green white green like the flag like the flag well depending if you're still
looking southward and it's being blown to the east yes um we're celebrating uh mexican independence
day i guess but we're also we're happy and we're
celebrating our movie um here's my my fear is uh a shot of lime juice just sounds really harsh
and then we're following with tequila like if we had some shitty tequila that would be one thing
but differed told us to get patrone right so we're gonna be like ow oh ouch and then oh that's a very very
smooth tequila and then a shot of something spicy afterwards we're all over the place yeah this is
gonna be i think i'm gonna do a half of a lime half the lime first because i don't think i'd
like a whole mouthful i'm gonna try i'm gonna i'm gonna do it it's gonna be a negative experience
but i'm gonna do the shot all right and has anybody had sangrita before no never and as far as we know el chavito do we think they served us sangrita
we don't know who knows but this will be interesting because we're ending on like
kind of the wildest card of all yeah ready yep here we go first second and third sips
here I didn't like that limer
that's tequila of course
oh boy
I did a bing bang boom
okay
holy fuck
bing bang boom
hey congratulations on the film coming out
Okay
I didn't much like that
You didn't
No it's
I'm liking it more but
In the moment
The line is the harshest by far
That set me off in a bad place
It wasn't as
Challenging as I thought it was going to be
that long it absolutely like that's pretty harsh on the stomach harsh on the mouth and everything
but it was doable you know what i did though i have of the little bits i had a little bit of
each of each each uh thing left you mix them up it's good so i'm now i'm putting doing like a
little shot of everything right now that's probably great
yeah that's uh better it's an intro it's it's more of a uh thing yeah what have you all those
on the rocks and then let it get a little melty so the line's not so harsh it could be good
that was fun that's a good idea with the frozen uh shot glasses
yeah i've never had that before that's a good idea i. I'm going to, I can't do a warm shot of anything really.
No.
Now,
would you say that Sangrita is to,
to those at home who don't want to have to make this from scratch,
it's bloody Mary makes plus something sweet.
So put some OJ and some bloody Mary makes.
Huh?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Uh,
OJ pomegranate.
What was the last one?
What? Oh, the, the grenadine sweeties grenadine and they're doubling up on the the pomegranate juice and the grenadine
when is mexican independence day i was gonna look that up is it is it cinco de mayo oh is that i
think you're right i think you're right i feel like someone said that cinco de
mayo is not like really um uh the real thing in mexico and it's more like known in america people
are celebrating that but a mexican war of independence uh september 16th 1810 to september
27th 1821 wow that's a long war it That was 11 years. Isn't there a war called
the 11 Years War? Maybe that's it.
Ooh, I'm getting a little hot in the face.
Getting a little hot and bothered.
I can feel it right in my ears.
Sometimes when I drink
hot stuff, I can feel it.
I can hear how hot it is.
September 7th, 16th
is Mexican... September 16th? That's what it is this this close yeah we're
close yeah and that's a busy week with talk like a pirate day and my mom's birthday all
clustered together yeah i was reading an article i was again i was at dave ferguson's house and he
had a copy of the uh july 22nd i believe new yorker that was the magazine. Of course I have the New York times app,
but it doesn't allow me access to New Yorker.
And he was telling me about this article about pirates.
And it was just kind of like a couple of pages of breaking down like,
Oh, pirates.
Some of them were these bloodthirsty guys,
but some worked for the governments that they sort of lived in.
And it was saying captain Morgan, who was a real captain.
I think his name, Henry Morgan.
I think his name was, uh, he was a real captain i think his name henry morgan i think his name was
uh he was what gave captain morgan its name like he he was he was probably not that he was like
that type of pirate but he was the namesake well were they moving rum around i see that's the thing
i think it was just because he was a pirate and captain morgan is like a corporate thing they're
like oh there's what guy who we can use right Right, right. But he was, the story, the little story they told,
he went to England to get tried, wasn't punished for whatever,
sent back to Jamaica where he lived and was regarded as a hero.
Wow.
And then, and that was one part of the article,
and then it was like, and later in his years,
he was a slave, invested in slave trading and sugarcane.
I was like, oh, okay.
Henry, what happened? What did you do there, bud? years he was a slave invested in slave trading and uh sugarcane was like okay so i was like so he was pretty uh you know the government liked it but he also did this stuff captain morgan he's out there the morgan man really i had a big warm handle a captain morgan
forever it moved from my last place to my current place it's too big so it doesn't get a spot in
the bar right yeah it gets relegated to the top back of the top of the high shelf yeah and then
when did i ever crack it open when did i ever reach for it the dawn of the hand slammer now
i'm using it all the time it still doesn't go in bar, but it goes on the floor right by the bar.
Good.
That's good.
I don't mind being down there.
And you didn't reach for, you know what you didn't reach for?
Light white rum.
Ew.
That's gross.
Sounds good, though.
It's funny to me because-
Well, different drink.
Captain Morgan has since updated its label.
They've rebranded.
I have the old label.
I'm telling you, this jug is probably like four or five years old.
But finally, the bottle's almost gone so many hand slammers isn't that funny when uh
i don't know what the new captain morgan looks like but i can probably picture it
you're gonna love it's like it's like he used to be cartoon cartoony and cool and now it's like
just a little more humanish probably
you're you're critiquing but i mean it's but i've seen that stuff before it's like hey
let's make wendy a little more realistic it is weird when the update like you know uh you see
like hamburglar was a big one or like fast food logos through the years they're like oh you made
it so slightly around yeah it's like we took away these two guiding lines and now it's like tony the
tiger is gonna be like a fucking furry now is that true they're gonna have his i heard about this these 3d boxes they're gonna do yeah
his bulge is gonna shoot out the front of it tiger man sexy tiger man um have you guys do you know
i read this article recently about this iconic cheap pizza box that i'm sure you've seen yes
can you picture the most when you
order a pizza you want it to come in a beautiful white pizza box but sometimes it comes in like a
brown cardboard pizza box oh i thought we were gonna start talking about your dominoes art like
this art is i've seen it on definitely brown but is it also on white boxes is it just generic
are you picking the one with the cartoon looking guy and the realistic looking
guy?
Yes. That's why I thought of it.
Cause you were talking about making someone look slightly more.
Did you notice that on your own?
I think it was either we,
I think we were talking about once at birthday,
but like we had pizza at birthday boys and so maybe we were talking about it.
So, um, I've always, I've never really looked at the guys. Oh yeah.
I found it. There's, there's a word Okay, so the box says, enjoy your delicious moments.
So it's become known as the delicious moments box.
Oh, that's funny.
But there was an LA Times article about this pizza box recently, and I instantly knew the box.
And I was like, I had even looked at it before and thought like jesus christ this box
is everywhere but i had never noticed the main thing which is yeah there's the one pizza chef
that's up close is like drawn like fairly human yeah he's like a chef he's looking he's looking
he's looking at the camera yeah looking straight at the camera smiling and he's got a little italian
mustache but like they didn't overdo him in any way he looks like a human and then in the background in profile his co-worker is
sliding a pizza in the oven and he's a full-on cartoon character with like his whole face
he's further away so he doesn't get as much detail that i understand but this guy he's his
whole face his nose it's's like the Little Caesars
cartoon, but it's a pointy nose.
It's a brown nose.
This box is white.
It's not brown.
I know what you mean. It's the brown one, too.
They are the
freak work the ovens.
Basically, it's the cheapest one.
It's made...
You only see this, I think, like west of the Mississippi.
It's not so much on the East Coast.
But like, I remember from my dad's pizzeria, we didn't have uniform boxes because you'd be ordering like, they just get them like the different box suppliers, like paint different art on there.
And then when you're ordering from the paper company, we were always being like, what's the second cheapest one?
Or sometimes we get the cheapest one.
we were always being like,
what's the second cheapest one?
Or sometimes we get the cheap,
cheapest one.
Um,
and,
uh,
but so I think the LA times tracked down what factory this,
but it was hard for them to find like the factory this was coming from.
And then the people at the factory wouldn't, wouldn't comment.
Enjoy your delicious moments.
You know what I hate is in old movies when you see like a pizza box and it's,
um,
kind of like the consistency in the sheen of like a shirt box that you get from like Sears or something.
It's like a wobbly, glossy box.
Yeah, and it's like kind of that always made me so uncomfortable.
Like I need a hard box.
I hate those wobbly boxes.
I can't watch that shit.
The Bella Luna truck had the wobble boxes for a second and I hated it.
But a smaller size?
I've seen that more.
Smaller.
Yeah.
And now I think they're onto uh delicious
moments i want a steel case you know like a bear trap that's right um i recently i ordered a pizza
from uh village pizza on larchmont really good new york style pizza place you know oh yeah that's
good it is and that came and it was the most beautiful box I'd ever seen. And it was theirs. It said Larchmont, like village pizza.
Yeah.
And it was their logo.
And I was like, you don't see this anymore.
White box or brown?
White box.
Iconic, well-built, big white box with their logo on top.
I'll tell you something right now.
If you're somebody out there who wants to make the next great slice place, oh my God, because we need another one.
Set yourself apart.
Do a big pink box.
Do a big Brad color box.
No, pink is for donuts.
Okay.
Yes, you're right.
But the shape.
Brad box.
I'm with you on Brad box.
But something like, just make it like, or a black box.
This is goth pizza.
Black box theater though.
Right?
You do see black.
You see Lucifer's and also like uh slasher pizza they
both out here do black and that's and that's makes sense because they're like the devil's
metal yeah guys they're bad guys uh but come on you do robin blue robin egg robin egg blue
whatever but you just gotta set yourself apart. Green's good. They make green egg.
They make green egg.
They make the green egg.
In fucking Dr. Seuss land, they do.
And ham.
Jeff, take us out.
No, I want to know about round two.
I'm doing the same thing, but I'm going to mix it as a cocktail.
And I'm not going to do as much lime.
Ice option or nah? Oh, yes. Do you have a have a big cube yes one big cube to rule them all i'm gonna do the same thing again uh and just experience it
i'm gonna i want to do a little faster this time bit bit bit yeah i did bit bit bit i'm gonna slow
i did bit well bit bit this time i'm gonna to go, bip, bip, bip, bip, bip, bip, boop, boop, boop. Booze news, hit it.
Like a lineup.
Doing a lineup.
Yeah.
They must have this,
but I would like to see
one of those big ice cube makers
that makes like a big,
like ring.
I just said one ring.
Ring?
Yeah, like I think that would
cool differently than
just a big ball.
More surface.
He's always up to something.
I'm always thinking about just
little noodles.
I think I've said this before. I like science stuff i don't research it i just think of what
could possibly be yeah yeah what could possibly be the sky and you wonder what could possibly
never look it up armchair theorist that's good i like that you don't have a theory about how
differently it will cool but you think it'll cool differently. It'll melt faster because there's no cold middle.
Right.
Oh, it'll melt faster.
But it might get your drink cooler faster, more surface area.
It'll dilute it faster.
That's why towels, terrycloth works so well.
Because there's so much scrubby surface area.
So much surface area they don't even notice.
You ever seen Velcro close up?
It looks disgusting.
Surface area.
It's cool.
It's cool how it links together. Oh, it's little hooks and loops. It looks disgusting. Surface area. It's cool. It's cool how it links together.
Oh, it's little hooks and loops.
Is that right?
That's amazing that they happened to catch.
Which is funny because they called it Velcro,
but the guy who invented it was called,
I think his name was Daniel Hooks and Loops.
Hooks and Loops is my approach to music.
But on a serious note, when we're talking about surface area,
this is why I love the apple fritter.
It's the most surface area.
So the most oil.
Yeah.
Bubbles and crags.
Bubbles and crags.
The oil's getting in there.
So I'm having way more oil per donut.
You think the oil's not getting in there, Mike?
It's getting in there.
I didn't think so.
But now I feel like he's had a bunch.
You seem pretty, pretty pushing me.
I think I'll go with it.
All right, folks, we're going to make round two.
And when we come back, final thoughts.
This is Mike. We're back.
I've made my cocktail. Yes, we are.
I've made my cocktail. Look at these split. And these two my cocktail. Lickety-splitting. These two are...
We got the AC on. I don't even know who's hosting
this show anymore.
This doesn't...
I mixed mine as a cocktail. I don't like the...
I don't like the look of it.
It looks to me...
It looks nasty. It's not supposed to be that.
It looks like...
the beef shot.
The bull shot.
You made it weird and now you're like, I don't like how it looks.
It's like, well, Pete Holmes made it weird.
I don't know if it's my fault at all, but I'm getting nice and cool, though.
That's for sure.
I love the natural lime juice.
I will say it was quite chunky, the first shot.
Yeah, I didn't filter it.
I left it filter it.
I left it pulpy.
Pulpy.
Pulpy like my favorite fiction.
Oh, come on.
Flat friction.
Here we go.
Here we go.
I'm going to do my tequila first this time.
Hee hee.
Bottoms up.
There you go.
Cheers.
Woo.
Tequila first.
Very nice.
Now, these guys are going quick as if they're doing a lineup shot.
Zoom, zoom, zoom.
Wow, there they go.
That's quick.
Ooh.
Sangrito lasts his key.
Yeah.
It really just nuke bombs the whole place.
Oh.
This in the cocktail version is the way for me.
Can I have a sip, Mike?
And I put less I put less lime juice in it and probably even less sangrita.
Oh, it's good.
Yeah.
It's just tequila fruit punch with a little spice.
And the spice is nice.
Speaking of drinks and their chasers from be it lime and tequila with sangrita or otherwise.
Did you guys notice what I was drinking the other night at Rustic
was that your funny bone
it's close to it I hit my elbow into the wall
did you notice
what I was drinking the other night at Ye Rustic
you had a
big beer and a shot of something I thought
yeah I got a beer and a shot
thinking like I think I'm this
kind of a guy we were all leaving and you ordered another
beer so we left as you that's what was funny we said it was late at night and i was like
i don't really uh i was like it sounded right i was i knew i was gonna eat some wings so i was
like if i have a shot in a beer then i'll just be like perfect and and the shot will be strong and
then i'll be sipping the beer but then i ate all my food i finished that and then the lady was like would you like another
round and i was like yes and it's funny because you say another round i mean i i flagged her down
and said can i have another round either way another round meaning two full drinks and then
uh you guys were like okay we're gonna go and then uh and and i was like yeah no no go for it but
then it was funny when i was just like sitting there looking at my phone, finishing my drinks. And it was like,
you were just sitting there by your lonesome. Yeah. I liked it. I was just doing a little
scroll chilling, but what was funny was just like how much liquor that was. So like
it crossed me over from being like, not tipsy to tipsy, you know? So it was kind of funny,
like leaving there drunk
by myself that's wild you need to you need that's a look sorry jeff that's a look for when you get
your uh you know that that wool lined uh jacket you got that the black levi's jacket where that
was something like that that type of you got a wool jacket too well you know what i have is a alpaca line maybe it's it's rather odd it's um it's a
levi's corduroy jacket it's like a jean jacket cut but it's it's black corduroy hell yeah um
because i also have a black jean jacket black corduroy i have a black corduroy i think brown
right yeah i think i think uh i think olive green green. It's funny. We all different think of different stuff.
Yeah.
It says a lot about you as a person.
Again, that's exciting.
I'm excited to wear that corduroy this fall.
I'm excited for the fall.
It's good because we are really having a summer so that when summer's getting to the end,
you should be craving fall.
Yeah.
You shouldn't be sitting around saying, Oh, I didn't like the sparklers on the 4th of
July.
You like the sparklers.
I didn't go to the beach.
This was a pretty packed summer.
I still haven't been on a boat yet.
I didn't do that yet.
I thought your whole thing was boat hopes.
I know.
I had the hopes.
I went on an architectural cruise with Ted.
I know.
I had the opportunity.
And I went on the Rip Van Winkle, too, with my family.
That's true.
So, Mike, the boat's not up to you, but the hopes.
The hopes are there.
You had them.
And I tried to get a boat for 4th of July, but it was prohibitively expensive.
Well, I found, I found it.
We could have gone on the hornblower cruise, but it was, it was open.
It was open.
It was open bar and gourmet buffet.
It was a $200 ticket, I think for like the whole day.
Yeah.
Open bar.
Amazing.
But it was just funny to think like if if i looked at a boat that was
like way too expensive dude's like this one's cheap yeah i'd like to do that in the fall
wait were you going on about yeah well here's the problem with that coat okay going off black
corduroy but fur lined yeah um and the like like also black dark dark dark gray fur lined when i
bought it and put it on it was like too warm
and i was like i live in la i'm not gonna need this i'll always be this warm i'm self-tailored
here's the problem i snipped out with scissors the liner leaving the leaving the collar what are you
doing but i snipped it out scissors around clothing and now when i put it on it's like
deflated you know it's like this big
thick neck and then this deflated you cut out the structure i cut out the structure damn timing
structure did you see here i've never done the levi's jacket with just like the the wool like
the off-white cream color wool liner maybe i'll try that i feel like when i was a kid i went to
goodwill and found a women's shirt and it had shoulder pads. I was like, I'll just cut out the shoulder pads.
And it worked. Yeah. One of my
favorite shirts, one of the best shirts I have, the
sister shirt of it, I gave away to Anthony
in Chicago. Anthony. I didn't realize shirts had sister shirts.
In my wardrobe, the sister shirt is that light yellow.
Very nice.
Very thin.
Given by Dave Ferguson.
This is the Ferguson shirt.
And it had those shoulder epaulets.
Yeah, and I had to cut those off.
And he was like, I should have thought of that.
You know, I remember I got one over on Dave that day, too, because he had some brown shadow stripe pants.
Yeah.
And I was like, I'll take those, Dave. Took them into my room snip snip came out cut off shorts and he went short see he's not thinking of customizing i know
he needs we need to put some we gotta talk to him but you're so right about epaulettes man that was
a part of uh like indie uh alti culture i just hated the epaulettes. That's so fucking awful.
Epaulette coats make me think of like
an indie pop band
getting popular in the early 2000s
and their first like magazine
photo shoot is like, you have to wear this
army coat with epaulettes.
The wardrobe person is like,
rock and roll.
The only epaulettes that are okay is if you actually went to
the Army Navy store and you got one of those old green like army jackets and it just happens to have
but if you're going to like h&m and then your shirt has epaulettes on it just because it's
they think that's in style uncool i think epaulettes are there too you know when you
see military guys with that rope sort of around their shoulder yeah the epaulettes i think keep
it in place that's what i really yeah but i don't know what that's true because i had one of those
ropes in marching band never know what it slipped place. That's what I do. Yeah. But I don't know what, I had one of those ropes and marching band.
Never know what it slipped.
I never knew what it did.
I think it was always slinking around.
It's around your waist.
Whoa.
Whoa.
Time.
Whoa.
Um,
okay.
Final thoughts on the drink,
please.
Michael,
submit them.
Uh,
a shoe me with this.
Ficus.
The sophisticated way of saying this. This one's not for me i i well you're sipping on a cocktail that is not designed to be that i know but the other
version wasn't great either so i i don't know if this is a legit option for leave this for
professionals maybe for me but did you like the first drink no well i know you didn't not really not really
and i really think the the the thing was the lime too much lime but i think if you do like it then
mixing them together is an option you just didn't like it in the first place and but and i'm getting
low-key drunk here this is gonna be a an interesting blowout me too yeah um i'll go next
love it especially at a restaurant.
You want to order it.
Turn some heads.
See and be seen.
Here come the Bandera shots.
Now everybody's getting them.
Who got them in the first place?
It was Thutz.
It was Thutz.
Celebrate him.
How should we celebrate him?
We should erect an idol.
Melt down your vote folds. It's an order again and again tim back to you i agree on the fajita
factor man it's it's like did you see that uh there was a a famous tweet that was like
uh when somebody orders fajitas at the restaurant and then the gif was whitney houston turning her
head like um that uh i think it's a fun i think it's the pageantry of three shot glasses is very fun to me
it's beautiful in the three colors the lime juice actually kind of was green it was like clouded up
a little bit green because sometimes you get that brown sometimes it's clear but i'll say this folks
just do a small pour of the lime it's stupid to take a shot and a half of lime it's a big gulp do a half shot half ounce of lime ounce and a half of the other two maybe sangrita though that's the
real star of the show that was a mystery to me yeah what a revelation it kind of all blends
together like i'm not drinking going oh there's the orange juice or there's the tomato it kind
of did uh where's that grenadine? There you are. There you are.
Oh, you old grenadine.
I feel like, you know, sometimes I'm in the mood for a Bloody Mary and sometimes I order
one and drink it.
I'm like, oh.
Huh?
What's that?
Glenn Miller?
In the mood?
Yeah.
Oh.
That's in the mood.
I always thought in the mood was like a,
or I thought it would have been like a quieter,
like I'm in the mood for love.
That's so cool that Glenn Miller was like a famous band leader.
Was he a clarinet guy?
He was a band leader.
You know,
Quincy Jones,
same deal.
Like big band leader.
Also pop star.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
Oh yeah.
One foot in both worlds.
Mike,
go ahead. I was going to say, Oh, I was saying when we do a shot, that's crazy. One foot in both worlds. Mike, go ahead.
I was going to say, oh, I would say when we do a shot that's, like, I like the color difference.
When we do a shot that has the color gradient in the shot.
I saw those on YouTube for this.
There were Mexican flag shots.
Oh, no, but it had different ingredients in order to make the density stack.
Well, I think you could add a thickener.
Yeah, you could add a thickener.
I saw a funny one the other day. It like on uh instagram it was uh family guy shots and one
was like brown white and green and that was peter and then white red and white was bright
it's just like color blocking like that's so you can do that with like bart's and so it's just like
super simplified you get to the point ever where you can blindfolded take those shots and be
able to say which character it was?
You do your impression after you take one.
Hey, yeah.
Loose.
