Starting point is 00:00:00 So I've had an idea for a podcast just recently, and I've been discussing it with Tim, and we're going to do one episode about it just today. So to start with, we're going to discuss it, talk about the pros and cons, whether it's a good idea or not. And then, because this idea is kind of an activity and a contest, we're going to actually play it out and see how it works. So let's go. All right. This is good. I'm excited about this. This is good. I'm excited about this. All right. So this idea I have dubbed trash or treasure. And it's based on a term that what's pretty common in Australia called trash and treasure, trash and treasure, which is a thing they used to hold like that hold it in like big car parks and things, wouldn't they? And they were
Starting point is 00:00:42 big like secondhand markets where everyone would set up stalls and basically just sell all their tat and stuff they didn't want anymore did you ever go to any trash and treasure markets oh yeah no i lived at these things we had in our town we had garage sales actually and i know in america they're called yard sales well this is like instead of having it at your house everyone gets together and takes all their stuff to a big area and you wander through and i I, I have to say, I love these and I've been to many of them. So in the UK, they call them car boot sales because everybody takes their cars to like a sports oval or something like that and opens the back of their car and the, and your car boot, basically, and you put a table next to your car and your car boot becomes the thing you're selling
Starting point is 00:01:23 all of the, all of the items out of your trunk. But here it's a boot. So, a car boot sale. So, everyone's got a name for it. In Australia, Trash and Treasure is pretty familiar, but my name's called Trash or Treasure. And it doesn't involve yard sales. It doesn't involve car boot sales and things like that. Let me explain the idea. Basically, your two hosts or your two competitors or your two friends or your two people on the show, each separately go out to a charity store. And a charity store here in the UK, at least, has a reputation of being a place people donate things to like clothing and objects they don't want anymore. It could be anything. So, they become like these secondhand shops. But traditionally, because these are things people were willing to give away and didn't want to sell
Starting point is 00:02:10 they're usually considered like a bit more junky and a bit more trashy and finding nice things in these stores it's a little bit harder to find the wheat amongst the chaff you do still find gems but they've got a reputation for being a bit more lowbrow. So we're not talking about lovely antique stores where everything costs hundreds and hundreds of pounds. These are like trashy stores where you might find something good, but there's a lot of junk there. So secondhand stores, or they're often called thrift shops as well. Exactly. But an important part of this idea, because I want it to have a slightly noble cause to it as well, is these are charity stores. These are stores where what they're selling is supporting some kind of charity. Quite often it'll be things like
Starting point is 00:02:49 cancer research or mental health or very often hospices. A lot of the ones that we went to today that you'll find out later are supporting those kinds of charities. And I like that this idea has this sort of offshoot of supporting charity. Yeah. In Australia, it's the Salvos. Everyone goes to the Salvos, which is supporting the work of the Salvation Army and welfare and community work. But Salvo, go on to the Salvos. Give it to the Salvos if you're getting rid of something that has some value you don't want anymore.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Yeah. Or Goodwill as well in Australia. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's a common one too. Yeah. Salvos or Goodwill. Or Vinny's.
Starting point is 00:03:22 There's St. Vincent de Paul, which I think is the Catholic ones. Give it to Vinny's or you go to Vinny's for some cheap clothes or something like that. Yeah. So, anyway, our two people go to these stores separately with a budget. And we made our budget 30 pounds, which is about 50 bucks equivalent. So, not a tiny amount, but not a large amount either. We each had this budget.
Starting point is 00:03:45 not a tiny amount, but not a large amount either. We each had this budget. You go to the stores and you have to buy gifts, presents for the other person. Things that you think they might like will entertain them in the hope they might keep these things, things they want to have in their house or have some use for. And once our two people have done that, they come together, they give each other the gifts, they talk about about them we have a bit of fun bit of a laugh we talk about why we bought them we see what the reactions are like and then for each gift the recipient can decide whether or not for them this is trash and they don't actually want to keep it or it's treasure and they'll say you know what i'm keeping that that's going to stay in my house or i've got some use for it or something like that. So the idea is to buy something for the other person that you think might appeal to them
Starting point is 00:04:27 sufficiently for them to keep it. You keep the treasure and the trash, the stuff you don't want. Well, I think in this case, in today's case, at least the idea that Tim and I had was maybe we'd have some fun with it, maybe sign them or something and put them on eBay. And if someone else wants them instead of us, they can bid for it on eBay and any money we raise with the trash will also go to charity. And we've chosen the Retired Greyhound Trust here in the UK because Tim's been here in the house for two weeks and Lulu doesn't take well to visitors. So, the trauma we've put Lulu through will reward with some fundraising for greyhounds. I'm very grateful to Lulu and I'm very happy to support a charity that's close to Lulu and I'm very happy to support a charity
Starting point is 00:05:05 that's close to Lulu's heart. Brilliant. So this is cool because this is the first time we've kind of brought an idea fresh to the podcast and we're enacting the idea at the same time. But there is a surprise because I've got a list of items here. I've got a collection of items and so do you, and I don't know what you've got and you don't know what I've got. So, I'm looking forward to that. This is the idea that one person's trash is another person's treasure. And so, I'm trying to guess what things in my pile might end up in which category for you. So, in some cases, another person's trash might also be my trash. That's right. But it won't even become treasure just because it's been given to you by me. Surely you would treasure everything that I might have chosen specifically for you.
Starting point is 00:05:51 The fact that's come from you adds some cachet, but not a sufficient amount for me necessarily to want to keep it. It's moving it up a rank or two, but maybe not enough. Let's wait and see. All right. So we've both been out and done this separately this afternoon. Before we start, how did you find the process? How did you find being thrown out amongst all these stores and having to shop for gifts for me? Like, I love going to these stores. In fact, I'll happily spend a day off perusing stores like this. But the great
Starting point is 00:06:18 enjoyment behind them is that generally there's no agenda. So, you're just browsing to see what you come across and that's relaxing. But it actually, when you go looking for something, it's like, okay, I've got to find something for this process for Brady and whatnot. That actually, it kind of removes some of the joy. Suddenly you're on a mission and so suddenly you're searching and it becomes like all the rest of shopping
Starting point is 00:06:38 that happens in life, which is all hunting and the pressure's on and frustrating. So that kind of changed it a little bit. But however, I mean, it was a lot of fun. Really good. I really enjoyed it. Particularly after I found something that I was really excited about. I have to say, I find it pretty high pressure shopping as well.
Starting point is 00:06:53 But I found today an absolute joy. There were so many things I wanted to buy and I was really excited to get for you. I am worried that I bought things. Everything I bought for you was kind of with you in mind And I attached a story to it to justify buying it for you But I did find myself buying things that I liked and would like for myself Like almost everything I've got for you I secretly want And most of them I was thinking do I even give this to Tim?
Starting point is 00:07:18 Maybe I should just keep this for myself So I'm a bit worried that you're going to want to keep them all Well perhaps you're in luck because I am flying home soon. And so, I've only got a certain amount of room in my luggage. You may end up with some of the gold for yourself just simply because I don't have the physical space for it. Yeah. You may end up trashing a few of the things I bought purely for space reasons. It may be that I treasure them, but I want you to be the custodian of them for a while. In other words, Brady, treasure this. I'm coming back for it one day.
Starting point is 00:07:44 All right. Well, let's wait and see. Shall we start? Shall we start the gift giving ceremony? This is like Christmas, isn't it? You're deciding the order you're going to give the gifts in and things like that. And we are going to keep score, a trash versus treasure score. And because the number of items one buys might be different within your 30 pound budget, I guess it's just going to have to be like a percentage, a trash versus treasure percentage to decide the winner. So just to be clear, I've got a little pile on my side of the table with a blanket over it. So Brady can't see what it is.
Starting point is 00:08:12 And I can't see anything from over your side. Mine are on the sofa under a blanket. All right. Okay. So there we go. I've got them all hidden away as well. Cool. So how about I go first with my first gift for you?
Starting point is 00:08:23 All right. All right. I'll go and get it And I'll bring it over Are you excited? Should I close my eyes Or is this No, hold on Well, yeah
Starting point is 00:08:29 Maybe close your eyes Yeah, close your eyes Alright, my eyes are closed Alright, Tim Your first gift is on the chair What do you think of it? Oh, wow What is that?
Starting point is 00:08:39 Who is that? Oh, that's Jack Nicholson It is too Oh, that's cool Oh, that's great Brady's given me It's great brady's given me it's it's bigger than it's like an a3 size black and white picture of jack nicholson in a flat cap lovely english flat cap which i love and i have one myself and there's an autograph down the
Starting point is 00:08:56 bottom but i'm not willing to think is genuine but it looks kind of official the way it's been presented this is cool it's not in a frame but it is in a mat board ready for framing. And the Jack Nicholson picture is framed. And then underneath in a separate little cutout in the mat is an original autograph. Now, Tim, I did a bit of research in the shop. I googled Jack Nicholson's signature. I looked really closely at lots and lots of samples. And I'm willing to say with 99.99% certainty, that is not Jack Nicholson's signature. That looks nothing like Jack Nicholson's actual signature. Which kind of makes it all the more charming. I love it.
Starting point is 00:09:40 I love it. And obviously, they've storn you as well because they were only selling it for a fiver. So, I have no idea. Like, was this some fake someone made and it somehow ended up in a thrift store? I don't know. But this is a picture of Jack Nicholson with someone else's messy handwriting underneath, supposedly looking like a signature saying Jack Nicholson. That's cool. I love the picture.
Starting point is 00:10:02 It's a cool black and white picture, which I love. Yeah, this is a great gift. I really like this. This is fantastic. So just as a little note to everyone listening, we're going to put pictures of all the items that you hear about today in the notes for the show. And I will also include all the pictures in the YouTube video of this show when I eventually upload it. So we'll do our best to describe them as we go, but you can also go and have a look at them in real time if you click on the links or if you just watch this on YouTube. So, Tim, trash or treasure? Oh, this is treasure right out of the box. In fact, it would be even less treasure if the autograph was real for some reason. It would be like, oh, that's official
Starting point is 00:10:39 merchandise. The fact that it's almost definitely not kind of makes it even cooler, but I love it. I want to know the story behind it. Like, I wonder if it's like some criminal enterprise or what was the person doing that did that? Were they trying to make a quick buck by being naughty? Maybe it is Jack Nicholson's signature. There are a few similarities. I don't think it is, but like for all we know, it could be the real thing and we'll never know. We'll never know. If you're listening, Jack, and you've been to England and you've been distributing these as some sort of, we've found one. I mean, this is quite common for autograph collectors to take an autograph
Starting point is 00:11:14 from another source, like an autograph book, and then frame it with a separate picture to sort of create like a little more sellable piece of art. So, it is possible, you know, Jack Nicholson signed this piece of paper 10 years ago in a pub and then someone got their hands on it and framed it with a picture. But I think it's a dodgy, dodgy myself. I love the fact that the signature paper is of different colour than the photo. Like it's just a piece of paper they've put with the photo and there's no resemblance between the two. There we go. There we go. Oh, that's a cool. I like the photo.
Starting point is 00:11:46 I'm trying to think how can I get this home. I don't know where it's going to fit. Is this one that you would like to keep yourself because you think it's pretty cool around the house? No, that wasn't on my list of ones to keep. It was one that I thought people might like to buy in an eBay auction if you and I signed it as well. We could all sign it. Wow. I know.
Starting point is 00:12:02 We will actually like decrease its value. But if you want to keep it, that's great. I feel like I'm on a win. I've already got my first point. I'll have a think. Look, it definitely is a treasure. I'll decide when it comes to packing as to whether it makes it home or not. And you'll be able to see.
Starting point is 00:12:17 But I do like it very much. It's some of the cast of The Shining plus Tim and Brady. All right. Let's move that. That's cool.'s cool well done man good one out of the block what made you choose it well i know you like jack nicholson he's a sort of actor and character that i thought would appeal to you and the picture is a great picture of him like it's just a i don't know it's just a great photo and i liked the kind of i liked the weirdness of i don't know i just saw it and thought that's just so beautifully dodgy like it's dodgy but in this sort of charming way i don't know i just saw it
Starting point is 00:12:49 and thought i have to have that yeah nice nice well done man good work pressure's on all right you're gonna what's your first one you're gonna start with a good one i've started with a good one and i'm ending with a good one and i'm gonna do all my filler in between no okay all right all right well i was gonna start low but that's a good idea. I'll start with the strong one. Should I shut my eyes? Yeah, shut your eyes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Eyes are closed. Tim's going to the secret pile. Who knows what he's digging out? He's placing it on our little display chair. All right, open your eyes. There are two objects here. Okay, I'm opening now. All right, we have two vinyl records.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Vinyl records are a staple of the thrift charity shop because everyone is offloading them these days. We have Yaz. Yaz Wanted, including the hits The Only Way Is Up. Do you remember we referred to The Only Way Is Up by Yaz as a possible alternative to a Donovan double back and a rick roll. Okay. So, I saw it there and I thought, oh, I can't believe it. Of all of them, I was looking through and found it. I thought, I can't believe it.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Oh, nice. Hold on. The only way is up. Baby. You and me now. The only way is up. Very nice. All right. So, we've got Yaz.
Starting point is 00:14:12 We also have here The Sound of Music. The Sound of Music soundtrack on vinyl. Nice. This is nice. I'm liking the cover. It's got a lovely faded yellow cover to it as well with the gorgeous old pictures of The Sound of Music. Nice. There we go. I'm looking at at the back what have we got on here has it got side one prelude overture what's your favorite song on the sound of music soundtrack oh that's a good question i'm gonna go for i do like 16 Goat Herder song
Starting point is 00:14:49 And it's a bit of a cliche But I do like Do Re Mi as well I always thought that was quite clever. It is a clever song. A deer, a female deer. A drop of golden sun. Yeah. Mine's Edelweiss.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Edelweiss, Edelweiss. Every morning you greet me. I love Edelweiss. That is a lovely song. That is a lovely song. Very good. So what do you think, man? Yaz, The Only Way Is Up and The Sound of Music soundtrack, two classic albums in the rock catalogue. What do you think, man? Yaz, The Only Way Is Up and The Sound of Music soundtrack, two classic albums in the rock catalogue.
Starting point is 00:15:49 What do you think? Trash. Oh, really? Both of them? Both of them? What about Yaz? Surely not Yaz. Yaz is definitely trash.
Starting point is 00:15:57 The Sound of Music almost rescued you. And in fact, to be fair, if we didn't already have The Sound of Music vinyl record downstairs at the moment next to our record player, it may have saved you. Oh, you've got one. Yeah. I'm just going to go Trash, but I appreciate the thoughtfulness and I enjoyed the receiving of it, but I'm not going to keep it. And I think that's what qualifies it for Trash.
Starting point is 00:16:17 I'm definitely not going to keep Yaz. Hang on. Hang on. She's got Got To Share and Fine Time on side one. Side two has Stand Up For Your Love Rights. Man, how can you get rid of this album? Is Yaz a person or a band? I thought Yaz was a band.
Starting point is 00:16:32 No, Yaz is a person. Oh, right. See, the only girl on the cover who's very excited and she used to sing The Only Way Is Up, which is the only song out of any of those I've heard because it was a hit back in the 80s. All right. I can't believe you're getting rid of Yaz. You can take it if you want. Otherwise, it's going to be on eBay.
Starting point is 00:16:48 We will sign the Yaz album so you can have Yaz signed by Tim and Brady raising money for retired greyhounds. Hi, everyone. Just going to take a quick break from the episode to talk about today's sponsor, Hover. Hover is the place to go for registering domain names. If you've got any kind of idea or anything you're doing, you're going to need a website and you're going to want the best possible domain for it. And the ideal place to register domains, the place I use is Hover. Now, as a matter of fact, this very episode, you've heard me come up with an idea,
Starting point is 00:17:25 my trash or treasure idea. And literally right now, I'm signing into my Hover account. A couple of clicks, I'm in already. And then I'm going to go for trash or treasure, see what's available. It's this quick, ash or Treasure. Now, perhaps unsurprisingly,.com is gone for this one. But trashortreasure.fm is among the many, many domains you can register. And.fm, the traditional domain used for podcasts, is available. Trashortreasure.fm. With one click, I can add it to my basket. And then proceed to cart.
Starting point is 00:18:04 All good. Check out. One more click. That's it. It's mine. Trash or treasure.fm. Now, I don't know if I'm going to end up making this podcast at the moment. I'm just sort of sitting on it just in case. But what I can do is I can divert that domain to another web page in the meantime if I haven't already created something. And what I have done for this episode is I have got a holding page and on that page I'm going to put lots of information, images, things to do with the episode you're listening to. So if you go trashortreasure.fm you'll see I've already created the diversion. It's that simple, it's that quick. Hover is so easy to use. It's a clean system. Everything
Starting point is 00:18:46 can be done in a few clicks. It's a really beautiful interface. They've got all the domains you could want, the.fm, the.com, all the typical ones, plus loads and loads of obscure ones you've probably never heard of. Of all the services I use online, Hover is the absolute top of the pile. If you've got an idea, if you need a website, or you might need a website in the future, go to hover.com slash unmade. If you use the slash unmade, that'll tell Hover you came from here, which is good, but it also means you'll get 10% off your first purchase, a 10% saving. So don't let the grass grow under your feet. If you've got a good idea, the domain might still be available, but it might go tomorrow. Don't miss your chance. Go to hover.com slash unmade. Check it out. It's a pleasure to use and you'll get 10% off your first purchase. Thank you Hover for supporting this episode. Now let's get back to the present giving. All right, Tim, you
Starting point is 00:19:44 can open your eyes. It's not on the chair yet. They're in my hand. When I go to secondhand stores, I love going through their boxes of postcards. Oh, yeah. I love old postcards. Sometimes I got stuff written on the back. Sometimes they don't.
Starting point is 00:19:56 And I got you a little collection of postcards that, I don't know, I can imagine in your office because I know you like old Englishness. And I also know you have like a lot of interest in like theology and history and culture and things like that yeah and i thought some of these just might tickle your fancy so let's see how i did six postcards for you okay brady's handing me the postcards i'm looking at them oh these are gorgeous they're really like a motive and they're old colored pictures and they have quotes from the Bible and other sort of positive axioms in them. Yeah. Little quotes.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Yeah, they're lovely. Some of them are quite moving. They seem to, a lot of them seem to refer to remembering people who've died or soldiers at war and things like that. I just thought they all tell a little story and I thought they might just like appeal to your sentimental side. Yeah, there's some little pieces of poetry on them. I do like them.
Starting point is 00:20:44 I like some more than others. Oh, there's writing on the back of some on them i do like them i like some more than others oh there's writing on the back of some of them this is nice yeah one of them i love this one of them was actually sort of sent i think so it's got like a message a personal message on it okay let me see if i can read it hope you will like these meant to have sent them before only been it's very old cursive writing it's hard hard to read. Yeah, they're hard to read. I've been cleaning the house and taking a little letter. But this basically, this person's written an entire message saying, sorry, I haven't sent these before. I've been cleaning the house.
Starting point is 00:21:14 But they've written it on the back of a beautiful. And I think it's love. I think it's Sally. I'm not sure. I can't read it quite properly. These are nice though. I do like them. Any chance you're going to keep them?
Starting point is 00:21:24 I might keep one or two and I might if you keep any i'm taking that as treasure i might i might choose one as a treasure and done treasure thank you point for me it was always a i didn't i never thought you'd keep all six but if you you want, you choose what you want to keep. The rest of them for the greyhounds. That's nice. You don't want to write on them, though. Maybe we'll sign the back of them. That might be a good idea.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Yeah, we'll sign the back. We'll write on the back. Sorry, we haven't sent these before now, but we were cleaning up the house and we found them. Brilliant. Oh, well done, man. They're quite lovely and nostalgic. I thought, I really like this one with the lady's going up the staircase to bed, like looking all sad and her like son or husband or someone in the military uniform
Starting point is 00:22:11 is a picture on the wall. I think it's really kind of sad and sorry, isn't it? Yeah, I think I like that one the best. Really melancholic. Yeah, she looks very sad. Nice work, man. Nice work. They're lovely.
Starting point is 00:22:22 They're lovely. They're two good, serious. I'm wondering if mine might be a little bit more trivial and jokey than yours but i i um i'm feeling very confident particularly with my final gift but we're not there yet so i'm going to pull something else out close your eyes oh i can hear more rustling in the background i hope this one's really expensive tim now you said you hope it's expensive. I'm just taking the price off. No. So, just... I don't know if this will stand up on the chair. Don't break it.
Starting point is 00:22:49 You haven't even... I haven't even seen it yet. All right. Open your eyes. All right. Here we go. All right. This is a...
Starting point is 00:23:03 Do you want to describe it on me? It's a... It's like a... It's a plate, like a display plate, an ornamental plate that Tim's put on kind of a little stand. So how you would have it on your mantelpiece. It's white and blue, that kind of traditional whitey blue colour. It's the Dutch Delft blue. The picture on it is very Dutch. It's a man with a piano accordion and a woman in traditional Dutch clothing and a windmill in the background. It's like something you would expect to see in
Starting point is 00:23:30 like an old person's house. Yes. So, the reason I chose this particular one was because years and years ago, the house that I grew up in with my parents, I remember you saying was you always found it really nice and cozy. And one of those reasons is it had lots and lots of Dutch trinkets around because dad was Dutch. And a lot of it is this Delft blue, which is the Dutch sort of design and make. And I saw this and I thought, oh, maybe this is a bit of a reminder of that. I can see it kind of fitting in your house a little bit as well because you have some lovely old stuff.
Starting point is 00:24:00 I'm not convinced you will, and I know you probably don't have the final word on what goes up in your house anyway. But I thought of this and I thought, oh, that might remind you of that connection back there. And, um, and cause I quite like it myself and I'd put it up in our house today and, and it's got that sort of Dutch feel they're wearing clogs for instance. So there you go. So you're right. It does instantly remind me of your dad and all his Dutchness in your house, which brings back a lot of fond memories of both your dad and that house. My initial reaction was trash. But now I think about it, I mean, you haven't spent a lot of time in my bedroom in this house, but our bedroom is actually decorated with a lot of blue and white China objects.
Starting point is 00:24:40 Oh, right. And I think there's half a chance that it might pass the approval process. So, do you know what? Only just, only just, I'm going to give you a treasure. All right, all right. You were very close to a trash, but also, you know, after you played the dad card, I'm going to just give you a treasure. But it could easily end up in a trunk somewhere.
Starting point is 00:25:07 But I like the thought. It also is very practical. It's a plate you could eat off. I could. I could put my toast on it in the morning. That's right. That's right. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:15 There we go. So anyway, that's- Thank you very much. A treasure. Taking that as a treasure. Mark it down. I have. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:25:24 All right, Tim. So I have got for you three books, three different books. So it's a little cluster of books. I'm going to show you each one in order because I know you love books and I know you love old things. So the first book I've got you is what's called, there's this, there's a series called the Observer's Guide, which these little sort of informative books from years and years ago. We actually collect them, my wife and I, and have a whole series of them downstairs. You'll get The Observer's Guide to Birds, The Observer's Guide to Fish, and they're kind of little pictorial informative books. And I have got you, because we have spent some of this week at the Royal Society and the Royal Albert Hall, and we've seen lots of like crests and badges and official royal things. I've got you the observer's book of heraldry. So you can learn all about how crests
Starting point is 00:26:11 and badges and things like that work in the UK, what the rules of heraldry are, what things mean. So if you see like a star or a crown or a hand or things on a shield or a coat of arms, you know what it means. Because I think heraldry is something you'd get a little bit into cool yeah i like this this is lovely all right this is nice this is a lovely book it's about the palm this bit larger than the palm of my hand yeah yeah and it's got illustrations all the way through it in the middle there's a whole bunch of nice color pictures and things oh right okay yeah oh yeah yeah gorgeous oh yeah no i like this this is good but you've got two more books yeah two more yeah it gets even better all right now while we've been here you've sometimes asked about the geography because you just jumped in the car at the airport and you've sort of said things like
Starting point is 00:26:51 where are we in britain and where are we driving and what are we near and things like that and sometimes your british geography you know away from the places you know like oxford and london that is a little bit rusty so i've got you this lovely little pocket atlas of the British Isles, which is full of tiny little colourful maps, which I think are really, really pretty. This is cool. You went to better shops than me. This is really great.
Starting point is 00:27:13 I went to the same shops as you. Well, you got the cool stuff. This is really nice. I did go first, so maybe I cleaned out all the good stuff. You cleaned them out, yeah. Oh, this is really lovely. Yeah, this is a little pocket atlas, about the same size again. You could take that apart and make little tiny framed maps
Starting point is 00:27:26 and all sorts of your favourite parts of England or you could just keep it as a book. I love the fact it's almost around the same size as an iPhone. Yeah. Which is, you know what I mean? You're used to having that size in your hand and it's got maps and like Google Maps or whatever. Yeah, this is nice.
Starting point is 00:27:41 This is really nice. I wonder what year it is. Oh, 1942. Lovely. Well done, man. So, that's two. Two nice little books. I wonder what year it is. Oh, 1942. Lovely. Well done, man. So, that's two. Two nice little books. I think they're both treasure so far.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Okay. Well, I think it doesn't matter about this third book then. But this third book, I thought might appeal to you. It's from 1958 and it's something we've discussed once or twice like over the last couple of weeks and that. This is the 1958 Guinnessness book of world records oh wow so this is what the guinness book of world records was like when it used to just be like lists of records and it didn't sort of sell out and become all about color photos and the guinness book of records i think it's a bit rubbish these days but this is when it was what
Starting point is 00:28:17 it should be like just lists of records and oh yeah this is cool look the longest speech the longest recorded speech in the house of commons was that of Peter Brougham, I think it is, on the 7th of February, 1828, when he spoke for six hours on law reform. There we go. I think because this book's so old as well, it might be interesting to read what things interested them as records and what records have been broken and things like that. It's got some pictures in there. I don't know. I just thought I could just imagine you like sitting down on the sofa and going through this for fun and sort of enjoying the facts, but also enjoying kind of the datedness of it. Yeah, I like it. I like it. There's stuff about the moon, deepest crater on the moon, different countries. This is nice. Well, look, as a package, they absolutely are a treasure. I like these. I like these a lot. I'm going to
Starting point is 00:29:03 take them home. Thank you. Great. Very nice. Very nice, man. I have to say I'm a little bit jealous. All three of them I would definitely have kept. I would have bought those for myself if I'd found them. Well, maybe you can. Maybe I'll share them with you. No, no.
Starting point is 00:29:16 It's for you. We'll see when it comes to packing how the room goes. The two little ones might get in and the big one might stay behind. But I like this. Well done, man. Well done. You've got. These are really good.
Starting point is 00:29:28 I did tell you while we were doing this, I did send Tim a text saying, I am just nailing this. I'm dominating this contest and we'll see. There's still more to come. I may yet stumble at the last hurdle. My last one is my showstopper, but it also might bring me undone. So let's see how we go. You're up anyway. It's time for another one for me.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Eyes are shut. All right. My next one has a bonus gift with it right okay so i was buying one and they said look you've spent this amount of money so you get something for free out of this big list and i looked at them and i didn't want anything until i found this and i thought well so this one's a bit of a stocking filler bonus there's two gifts all. All right. Here's the main gift. All right. Oh, this is the Jurassic Park trilogy on DVD. I think it's DVD, which is part of the charm. All right. So we've got the first three Jurassic Park films on DVD, the good one and two rubbish ones.
Starting point is 00:30:21 I forever associate Jurassic Park with you because you because firstly even i think it was before the film came out which i remember we saw together when we're really excited about i remember you giving me the book or recommending the book by michael crichton jurassic park which i read then i remember picking you up from work one night after you'd finished a late shift and coming down and you had the lost world it It was like, Oh wow. A sequel, which I didn't read. And I can't even remember if I saw, I think I saw,
Starting point is 00:30:48 but anyway, so Jurassic world on DVD. And I thought, wow, that's a bit of a, that's a bit of a, well, that in itself is a bit of a stocking filler present because it's on DVD.
Starting point is 00:30:56 All right. Jurassic park trilogy DVD. But here I have also a super rare free dvd giveaway from the daily telegraph on ultimate ashes from 2005 and the body line series this is a dvd produced by a newspaper in the uk of cricket highlights and the two things that it's highlights of is the famous body line test series where england defeated australia by using questionable tactics but they defeated australia and the other thing on this dvd is the 2005 ashes series when england also defeated australia in one of the most memorable series ever and the cause of incredible heartbreak for all Australian cricket fans. So I'm going to put them down as trash. Yeah, fair enough.
Starting point is 00:31:50 The DVD of Jurassic Park, two films I don't like and one that I do like, but on a DVD, and some cricket series that I would rather not be reminded of. So they're going to be going for the Greyhounds. Well, the... I mean, I don't think the Daily Telegraph would have made too many of those DVDs. I think they'd be quite rare. Surely one in every million copies, this would be a special giveaway. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:32:15 There we go. Anyway, they were there and I couldn't pass it up. I appreciate the thought and sentimentality. Let me get another one for you. Free to me and then free to you and then free back to the... Back to the vet, back to the listeners. Now, I mentioned that vinyl is a staple of the thrift store of the charity shop. And I couldn't go into one of these shops without buying some vinyl for Tim because he is such a lover of music and pop culture. So, I've got you three pieces of vinyl. Wow.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Two that I don't think will float your boat, and I've got them just for a laugh. And the last one I think is going to tickle your fancy, but for a reason you might not expect. Pressure's on to have something better than Yaz. I think I've, I don't know, we'll see. The first one I got because I know you like all types of music, and this is the classical music this is
Starting point is 00:33:05 the the planets by Holst oh yeah and I thought you might like this because it's such iconic famous music but also it's about space and planets and that's something of me so it's like my way of communicating my love of space and planets in a language that you appreciate cool this is good I like this I like this piece of music I know Mars is the really famous one, but Jupiter's my favourite. But I haven't listened to it for ages and I definitely don't have it on vinyl. This is cool. And it's space, so it's connection with you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:42 Yeah. All right. So, there's one. That's nice. I like that. The next one is just to sort of to remind us of the week we've had together because during this week we've talked about Wholesome and we've made the Wholesome episode of our podcast
Starting point is 00:33:53 and we've talked a lot about Ennard Blyton. So here I have on vinyl some Ennard Blyton happy bedtime stories. Oh, that's fantastic. So this is like audio books before they're audio books. This is Enid Blyton books being read and recorded on vinyl. That's great. Look at this, side one, number three, The Toys Go to the Seaside. Is there any more Enid Blyton?
Starting point is 00:34:16 Oh, that's nasty, that one. Oh, that's cool. This story is called The Toys Go to the Seaside. Once upon a time, the goblin Pico put his head in at the nursery window and cried, Who wants a day at the seaside? This is an album that's destined to be sampled for a Kanye West album. I can hear this just hitting the dance floor. And he sat down very suddenly.
Starting point is 00:34:54 The pink rabbit had come out in a great hurry just between the goblin's legs. Nice one. Now, the last one is a vinyl single. These days, I would say this is my favourite song by this artist, very, very famous artist. But the reason I'm giving it to you is because of what's been handwritten by its former owner on the front, which I think is really going to appeal to you. And it really ties in with the song as well. So, here we go. I'm handing it over. Tell people what it is and then read the inscription that's been written on it.
Starting point is 00:35:24 All right, here we go. This is Michael Jackson's The Way You Make Me Feel, off his Bad album. And it says here in pen, to my very special man, Mr 1988, happy birthday, my love, and happy new year. I will always be in love with you My darling Jay
Starting point is 00:35:48 So it's this love song I will always love you This sentimental gift And Brady's picked it up in a thrift store It's just been ditched I really Did you really Did you write this to me? And you're pretending it's someone been ditched i really um did you really did you write this to me and i'm you're pretending it's someone else but i can tell i can tell your penmanship no this is cool
Starting point is 00:36:12 all right the way you make me feel but i love that inscription a token of our undying love and it's just been thrown on the heap with all the other ones to my very special man mr 1988 i know i wonder i wonder what happened in 1988 it was and then mr 1989 came along and this was sent to the thrift shop there we go i wonder what side b is so if the way you make me feel what did he put his speed demon or something no oh it's just oh it's an instrumental version on side B. Which means we can perform it ourselves. You can sing along once you know the words.
Starting point is 00:36:55 Well, if you lay down some track for us now, Tim, I'll put it later on over the instrumental. Well, we might just hold off on that for a little while. That'll be the first time in two weeks you haven't been singing at the top of your lungs in this house. Oh, I love it. I do love it. You do like belting out a bit of a song as you're walking around, don't you? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Well, everyone loves it. You love it. The neighbours love it. The fans love it. You definitely have a better singing voice than me. I'll give you that. So, the big LPs I'm not sure we'll make at home just because of space. This one I might take home because of the heartwarming message that you've vicariously given to me.
Starting point is 00:37:25 You can take it home and just imagine what Mr 1988 got up to. But all of them, look, I'm going to call them treasure because I'm going to treasure one piece of it, even though we might put on eBay the other two. But I think this is my favourite Michael Jackson album, actually, Bad. I think that was just probably because of my age. I remember Thriller being on the news when it came out and all that stuff. But I think Bad's is my favourite album of his of his all right we're getting near the end is it
Starting point is 00:37:48 one more each from each of us one more each this is my piece de resistance right all right this will make a little bit of noise and i want to make noise when i get it over here not beforehand so it has a bit of an impact okay so this is a bit of a one that i hope you really treasure because I think it's pretty exciting myself. It's a massive box of Lego. So it's a bit of a rubbish box. It's like a big old red plastic box. But inside, oh yeah. Isn't it cool? And it's like old school Lego from our childhood like what lego used to be like i can see space lego in there and there's building lego
Starting point is 00:38:32 oh yeah give it a good rustle it's a pretty decent collection there's like other stuff i've just found a necklace in there as well and all and and hairs oh remember those things like thrusters from rockets? Oh, yeah, yeah. The back of the rocket. They're cool. They're hard to find. Hold on to that, actually, man.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Put it aside. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this or how I'm going to justify. I have got two huge boxes of Lego upstairs, unmade Lego sets that are like posh, like Millennium Falcon rocket ones. But this is like some kid's box of all the bits that you... And this is what Lego is supposed to be like to me, not pre-made kits and instructions, just like a big box of stuff and freestyling it.
Starting point is 00:39:11 No, that's right. Now, eventually those careful boxes up there, I mean, you'll make them and then they'll get thrown into the general pile. And the general pile is what it's all about. I love that some bits of it are like still made. Like here we have like a segment of a wing that was obviously part of some plane or spaceship that some kid made and when the lego was all broken down and put back in
Starting point is 00:39:28 the box this has sort of stayed partially intact so there's still like remnants of former creations so i just thought this is a cool thing to have around the place just to make for now and then when you're feeling nostalgic or you feel like you need to build something to explain something but it is a bit of a nostalgic present and i just couldn't move i couldn't get past it all right well i'm gonna give you a treasure just because we could never sell this on ebay anyway i love the thought and you have taken me instantly down a sentimental road but i don't i don't see how i could keep this i guess maybe i could pour it into some like lovely old wooden crate or something, and it might look a bit retro and cool.
Starting point is 00:40:07 But I'll think about how to use it. But it was definitely a good purchase. Even if it is a trash and not a treasure, it was still a good purchase. I've got a feeling that it's going to linger around the house longer. I've got a feeling you might pull it out. Maybe. Maybe it might go into the storage unit. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:40:26 All right. Now it's time for my finale. All right. And my finale is equally impractical and nostalgic. All right. We'll see how I did. Oh, wow. This is a very, very old retro game of Monopoly.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Oh, this is cool. I know you love Monopoly and your family loves Monopoly. And I know you love old retro stuff. And I saw this old one. I don't know what year it's from yet. I haven't figured it out, but it's got the old board. Oh, it's all like yellow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Oh, this is cool. And I thought, because you've had a British holiday, taking home like a British Monopoly board might be nice as well to show your kids and stuff like that. And now Tim's opening the box that comes with it and this is the best bit this has got all the money and the cards in it and oh look at that it's got like pounds and it's got the origin it's got original pieces in it like monopoly pieces like i've never seen them before oh that's cool they're like the little the hotels and the houses are wooden, which is gorgeous. And the money's here and it's all really used and it's like papery.
Starting point is 00:41:36 And there's the house mortgage documents, which are all sort of yellowy and bent and old and used. Look at the pieces though. Like the playing pieces are great. Oh yeah, where are they underneath? They're like these cast iron original playing pieces, different to how we kind of knew them in our childhood. Oh, they are too. They are like little iron pieces, aren't they? With little stands, so they stand up.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Yeah, and there's like a tractor here and a ship. Is there a ship in the modern world? Yeah, battleships always have. That's what I always played. I was battleship whenever I played Monopoly. What were you? Car. I bet you were the car.
Starting point is 00:42:02 Oh, I guess the car. I'm generally the hat these days. But even the battleship has sails, which is gorgeous. It's got a really old faded dice. Yeah, I love those old dice. The car looks really dated too. It's really thin. There's wooden dice.
Starting point is 00:42:22 And I love the train. There's a cast iron train. And they're all different colours. Actually, that would be helpful. When you're looking around the board, all right, where am I? Where am I? And you look at it and you go to remove. That's not you.
Starting point is 00:42:31 That's me. And then there's a tank. A tank. That's great. This is cool. This is really cool. Yeah. This is the best gift.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Yeah. I love it. Old Monopoly. That's cool. The chance and the community chest are like old papery cardboard sort of stuff. I thought the Monopoly board might look really nice framed. Oh, yeah. I wonder.
Starting point is 00:42:54 It's yellowy. And it's got this lovely old Monopoly logo on it. Manufactured in Great Britain by John Waddington Limited. Can you see a year on there at all? No. What about in the instructions? See, the original instructions are there too. Maybe there's a year there somewhere.
Starting point is 00:43:13 Lovely folded instructions. They're in good condition, really. We could find out when it was. I imagine it's been sold from this company to one of the larger manufacturers. And we can find out when that happened and knowing that it was before then. How am I going to get this home? Maybe we'll have to, like, post it back to you or something. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Let me just have a look here at the history. Do you know what's here? There's instructions for a different game. So there's the proper instructions for the full game, and then it says rules for playing the new short game, which has new rules. It's like a different version. Before commencing, the players stipulate the time
Starting point is 00:43:49 at which the game shall end. And at the end of the game, the richest player is the winner. So this is like on the clock version. At the start of the game, the banker shuffles the title deed cards and having cut them, he deals two cards to each player. So you're well on your way with property from the start. Okay. Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:44:04 This is a different version for short playing. That's handy, actually. All right. So you're well on your way with property from the start. Okay. Oh, that's cool. This is a different version for short playing. That's handy, actually. All right. So there we go. I'm taking it. I take it I've got a treasure here then. Nah. Yes, very much so.
Starting point is 00:44:14 This is a really lovely gift. There you go. I really love it. I really treasure it. Super. I'm really glad. So there we go. We've had, well, I'm five from five.
Starting point is 00:44:24 Are you really? Yeah. Oh, that's ridiculous. Yeah. I knew I'd nailed it. I knew I'd nailed So there we go. We've had, well, I'm five from five. Are you really? Yeah. Oh, that's ridiculous. Yeah. I knew I'd nailed it. I knew I'd nailed it. You had, you had. And I felt frustrated towards the end. I thought I haven't got anything and thought a couple of things would be maybe cute and a bit funny, but maybe didn't pay off. There we go. And Tim, you're kind of, I think Tim was two and two, but he did well. You played well. Thanks, man.
Starting point is 00:44:43 But I think you were up against a master of antique shopping to be honest so this is a podcast idea that you that demonstrates what you know about the other person so you can have discussions about you know why you got it and then also about the objects themselves yeah which can be of interest but like the antiques roadshow kind of idea talking about yeah them but this you to be honest the the things that you found elevated beyond, like, it's like you've gone to an antique store, you've gone to a thrift shop and found antique-y kinds of things, which is really, really cool. Well, there are always good gems to be found in these shops and you're supporting local charities a lot of the time as well. So, I think it's well worth
Starting point is 00:45:18 doing. As I said, some of the objects that are either been trashed or Tim can't take home or things like that, we're going to have a little eBay auction going to raise money for retired greyhounds like Lulu, who is a retired greyhound. So you can keep an eye on kind of show notes and social media and we'll keep you all informed about what we're doing. Tim, this was good fun. Thank you for my gifts.
Starting point is 00:45:43 Well played and, you know. Thank you, man. This is a good idea. Firstly, because it's not just a podcast, but you get cool stuff. And you get to give cool stuff. And you get to spend time looking around through shops. But can you imagine if this became, you know, imagine if this was like a big deal. This was like a big famous podcast.
Starting point is 00:45:57 Can you imagine like famous people doing it? Like you would send, you know, Jay-Z and Beyonce out to go and buy things from charity stores, cheap things for each other. It's kind of a how well do you know the other person? And it's a different way into finding their stories and the relationships between them. Like we've discussed the relationships between us and things like that. It's a really like, you know, it's another way into telling people's stories. And, you know, that's what good podcasts are always about.
Starting point is 00:46:26 It's true. You could have two gifts. One gift that reflects me that I want you to have. And one gift that I just think you really want to have. And you know what I mean? There's a sense of getting to know you and sharing that happens all the way through. Shall we play Monopoly? Oh, we haven't got time, really.
Starting point is 00:46:40 I'm not very good at Monopoly either. And we haven't got a hat for you to be. There is a short Monopoly. the new rules for the short game. The new rules from like the 1940s or whenever this box is from. Well, those rules have dropped out. I don't know anything about an abbreviated version of the game. You're going to have to read them. I actually thought about doing something really quite ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Like, the first place I went to had these mattresses, massive mattresses out the front, and I actually thought, what if I just brought home, like Brady loves to sleep, and I just thought, just the idea that I've carted home a massive mattress made it tempting for about two minutes but I thought about it I'm glad you didn't do that hey people just a little reminder if you'd like to see all the objects featured in today's episode there'll be links in the show notes or you can watch the youtube version of this video and if you'd like to own some of them there'll be links in the show notes or you can watch the youtube version of this video and if you'd like to own some of them there'll be links down there as well remembering all the
Starting point is 00:47:49 proceeds we raise will be going to support retired greyhounds just like lulu the pink rabbit has come out in a great hurry just between the goblin's legs the toys laughed till they cried
