Where we talk movies, comics, TV shows
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday
With me as always my host, Nick Mason
What's going on?
Not much, have you taken a look at Netflix's Stranger Things? Yeah, yes, I have.
You know I have. I watched like the first two. It was great. It's out July 15th, exclusively on
Netflix. No, I know. I did like a video on it. Hey, is there something going on with you? You
seem like a little off. No, I'm good. Listen, Stranger Things is great. If you don't like it,
it's fine and it's cool, but you're wrong. It's fine that you feel that way, enjoy what you want, but you're wrong.
Alright, here I am James, 15 minutes late, right on time, ready to start the show. What
is this?
What? Wait a minute.
Who is this little man? It's clearly some sort of Victorian era street urchin. He's
got a little top hat on with the top popped open like a can of soup. It's not me. I mean,
I have worn one of those from time to time, but that is clearly not me.
What are you, get out of here, kid.
Get the bloody kid out of here.
Ruining this stellar show that nothing ever goes wrong.
What a stranger thing to start the show.
Certainly a stranger thing.
Well, welcome, Nick Mason, real Nick Mason.
It's me, real Nick Mason.
Yeah.
That'll bloody teach you for showing up late, won't it?
Who knows who could have been here? That kid have murdered me who knows the kid's murderous some
are i guess some are murderous well he's not getting paid for that attempted murder that i
told him to do on you but he got him what do you run up to oh not much man just not today okay
sunday if it was saturday yeah you better believe it because you went out on friday night and i had hoped that you'd be drunk long enough to be still hung over now the worst the worst part was i got home at like 2 30
a.m and there was a car alarm blaring in the street like right at the front of my house but
was it like the siren anyone that stopped after 10 minutes it was like someone would just hit the
horn oh no and it went for eight hours. What?
Like, nobody... I called the police and they're like,
no, you know, the funny thing is
we can't really do anything about it.
I'm like, yeah, that's fucking hilarious.
That is funny in a way.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You'd think that...
Because my understanding of a horn
is it's like a car horn.
It's got some sort of gas in it
and you'd think it'd run out of gas eventually.
Like an air horn. Like an air horn. Eventually, like... And like when you'd be like ah i didn't know anything this weekend but i did i i went past the forum theater
in melbourne right which is like you know thousands thousands capacity theater like 8 a.m and there
was a line around the block of like teenage girls and i'm like that seems like something you want to
be a part of yeah i know right but i'm like I didn't I didn't hear about this on the on the bloody the bloody great yeah so and then I went
past again at like midday and the line is longer around the block what and then like a couple of
hours later it's even longer around the block like this this whole day you're just cruising
back and forth back and forth exactly I just want to want to see what's going to happen but then
I learned it's something called mag con right And I didn't know what that was.
So I Googled just MagCon and I found a website.
And it's like, that's the MagCon tour.
And it doesn't say what it is.
It's just like pictures of clean cut young men.
And I'm like, are they a boy band?
But it doesn't actually say.
So I was just like, Google, what is MagCon?
Help me.
I was just like, Google, what is MagCon?
Help me.
So it turns out MagCon is like an assortment of Vine stars.
You know, Divine, the six-second video app.
And it's just they tour the world and people take selfies with them.
And so they filled up the Forum Theatre for two days in a row.
Like a bloody... That could not be like less disappointing
if you turned up to that, surely.
You go up and you get a selfie.
What do you say?
I love you, Steve Harrison.
You're the best of all...
I don't know anybody else.
Like that's not a good time for anybody.
It's not a good time for Steve,
the people lining up.
People are bloody loving it.
That's why people should never meet us in real life
because they'll be like, how unimpressive.
I was going to say,
if there's a multi-million dollar marketing tour system
for these bloody untalented hacks
and there's hope for us yet, hey?
That's right.
But you know, those guys would be rolling in it.
Yeah, I know, right?
That's like a different level of internet fame.
Not even you.
We don't understand it.
You'll do like a six or seven minute video.
Too long.
That's five minutes and 54 seconds too long.
Yeah, you've got to lip sync to something or do a rap battle.
I don't know how things work, but yeah.
Anyway, Mason.
Anyway, that's literally all I did this weekend.
Just cruised past the Forum Theatre.
Just cruised past the line of teenage girls.
I hear you, man.
So, Tony Stark has been replaced in the comics towards the end of Civil War II.
Oh, with whom?
Riri.
Riri?
Riri?
How do you spell it?
R-I-R-I.
How do you say that?
Riri?
Riri.
Riri.
Rihanna.
Yeah, Rihanna.
Singer superstar Rihanna.
Battleship star Rihanna.
Rihanna, yeah.
A 15-year-old black girl.
And nobody really seems to mind. Because I think because they did, they replaced Captain America, they, yeah. A 15-year-old black girl. And nobody really seems to mind.
Because I think because they did, they replaced Captain America,
they replaced Thor.
And I think it's got to the point where everyone's like, right-o.
Like, everyone's finally just kind of...
Or is it a case of people are ultimately kind of sick of Tony Stark?
Like, right, with Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Tony Stark,
they're like, oh, this guy really grates on the nerds, honestly,
a little bit. Like, good on him for saving the world all Tony Stark, they're like, oh, this guy really grates on the nerds, honestly, a little bit.
Like, good on him for saving the world all those times,
but poor boy.
Yeah, yeah.
Stop, stop it.
Do you think this is the get all?
I feel like they're slowly replacing these characters.
It's a bit of a new Hulk as well.
Yeah.
For when the new slate of movies,
like the next slate of Vine stars become movie stars.
I don't think that will be the case, though.
You don't think it's good to have someone like...
Are you talking about the totally amazing Hulk?
Yeah.
Totally awesome Hulk?
Totally awesome Hulk, sorry, yeah.
I don't think that'll...
I'm talking like in 10 years' time,
and they're like, oh, Ruffalo's kind of not into it or whatever.
We could recast him or we could get Kid Hulk or whatever.
Okay, yeah, maybe.
Okay.
Or it's just like...
Does that mean a couple of transitionary movies?
Do you think they're going to throw in a Junior Hulk
in maybe one of the next ones?
I'd see Junior Hulk. Me too. He's got a little backpack. Have you seen... A lot of people sent this to us on Twitter. movies do you think they're gonna throw okay hulk in maybe one of the next ones i'd say junior hulk
me too it's got a little backpack have you seen a lot of people sent this to us on twitter uh
the uh new version of the red hulk right as a mustache finally finally because his alter ego
thunderbolt ross has a mustache but the red hulk generally did not have a mustache now he's had
he's had a glorious mustache
finally
a comic book character
that makes sense
in the world of physics
you know what I mean
and appeals to us
perfect
perfecto
because the reason
they didn't have it initially
was because
you would know
wouldn't you
because it was a secret
who the Red Hulk was
you throw a mustache on it
who else is it going to be
but I mean
how hard is it
to add a scene
where you've got Thunderbolt, General Ross,
and he's there with his moustache on and he's like, surprise, the Hulk.
It was me.
And he takes the moustache off and then he turns into the Red Hulk because it was a fake
moustache.
Just add that in.
But why would he be wearing the fake moustache?
But why does his moustache disappear?
These are all questions.
They're all questions, right?
Do you want subterfuge or do you not?
Yeah, I guess I do.
Bring back the fake mustache.
Maybe in this he's shaved his mustache as General Ross,
and it's a fake mustache when he's the Hulk.
Oh, I thought you were going to say it grows through.
No, no, he adds a fake mustache.
He puts it on, a little sticky fake mustache.
Good stuff.
Also, Doctor Doom's going to be replacing Iron Man as well.
There's going to be an infamous Iron Man comic coming up. Also, Doctor Doom's going to be replacing Iron Man as well. There's going to be
an infamous Iron Man comic
coming up.
Oh, very good.
Now,
I thought the Fantastic Four,
they'd kind of sunk it, right?
Like those characters
kind of turn up.
Oh, they don't have
their own book anymore.
Yeah, that's true.
So do you think,
I mean,
this isn't a Fantastic Four book
or it doesn't seem to be.
Do you think that
might have anything to do with,
not everything ties to the movies.
Right.
Do you think it could have
anything to do with,
maybe there's been some wheeling and dealing behind the scenes?
Oh, good question.
Or maybe it might just be a case of
we'll put out some Fantastic Four villains in the comics.
We'll slowly reintroduce the Fantastic Four to battle them in guest starring
and then see if people want the comic book to come back.
And if that is a success, then we go back to the movies.
Then we'll take back the movies for free from Fox.
Yeah, right?
We'll do them a favour.
Do we have any...
Is there any concept art or anything for this new Iron Woman man?
Yes.
Doctor Doom man?
Yes, there is, yeah.
Right, that's all I need to know.
Oh, you don't need to see it?
No, it's fine.
I'll do it in a minute.
Good stuff.
Well, Mason, it's going to be a big week for Star Wars this week our star wars celebration that's right europe but not not this week no for
news wise right now yeah it's been a real slow week for news i'm really kind of this bit of news
is there's a trailer coming for star wars robert downey jr endorses riri williams as iron man i
bet he would it's not really his call though, is it? No. Ultimately, no.
I don't care.
I didn't care when they replaced the other ones.
I don't care when they replaced this one.
As I always say, if it's a good story, great.
Great, exactly.
That's all I care about.
So yeah, there's going to be apparently a three minute Rogue One trailer coming out.
That's a lot of minutes.
That's a lot of minutes, yeah.
Is it too much, Mason?
I'm worried.
My voice has gone like this.
It depends what it is, I guess.
I'm thinking clip from the movie.
Yep.
And then intercut of trailer footage afterwards.
Yeah, I reckon it'll be...
Yeah, I think you're right.
Brief scene from the movie.
Yep.
Stuff we've already seen in the previous trailer.
Now in...
Yeah, well, that's exactly right.
And that's...
The scene might even be the one where she's captioned,
she's talking to Mon Mothma,
and she's like,
could you steal the plants for us?
And she's like, I'm a rebel.
And they're like, we're all rebels, man, come on.
Do us a fave.
Yeah, man.
So that's exciting.
So next week's going to be a big bloody Star Wars
and Ghostbusters week.
Oh, that's right.
That's going to be very interesting.
Hang on, what else potentially could come out
of Star Wars Celebration?
Well, they'll talk about the comics.
Great.
Maybe another spin-off movie.
Maybe a new colourway for the BB-8 Sphero robot.
Oh, yes.
Maybe BB-9, and he's blue and white, maybe.
Or pink and white, Mason.
Yeah, good.
They're gendered.
They're all gendered, aren't they?
Aren't they?
C-3PO.
Isn't BB-9 a girl?
BB-8? BB-8. I don't't know i think that was the character i just i think that was definitively
said that they that he's not okay i mean he's a ball so it doesn't really matter correct or she
thank you i don't know yeah it doesn't matter ultimately it doesn't matter yeah yeah uh but
this which reminds me uh this week i was on a new episode of It's a Duck Boy. Oh, you got in before me, mate. But instead of speaking about gendered robots,
instead of talking about DuckTales,
we talked about an episode of Transformers called City of Steel.
Was that to, like, appease you?
No, what they're doing, because every fifth episode they're going to do,
because they normally talk about the cartoon series DuckTales, every fifth episode now they're going to talk about a It's because they normally talk about the cartoon series DuckTales.
Every fifth episode now, they're going to talk about a different cartoon.
Just because they're sick of it.
It's breaking their bones.
Almost certainly.
But they did a Captain Planet episode a while back.
I hate him.
Anyway, so if you want to watch it, it's probably on YouTube somewhere.
Watch it.
Well, you'd want to listen to the podcast.
But if you want to watch the episode, it's called City of Steel.
Oh, right.
And it's probably on YouTube or something like that.
But watch that, listen to the podcast. we'll sort of play along i enjoy your
time on the duck blur podcast let me tell you old episodes of transformers cartoon are real bad yeah
they are they're not good are they look i'm known as someone who has very little nostalgia for
anything it's true uh my the most nostalgia i probably have is for old transformers or the
mandarin and let me tell you, I like the Mandarin.
I like all his little rings.
I like his Fu Manchu moustache.
Yeah, it's pretty good.
I like Mandarin's the fruit.
Yeah, me too.
But let me tell you, my enthusiasm for that cartoon has slipped right away.
It's real bad.
You think the 80s movie holds up, though?
Yeah, because it's a different animation.
Yeah, it's a different quality.
Well, while we're plugging stuff, Mason, I i dropped into i dropped into jedi council this week the jedi council podcast
we know a little cushion i was on a little cushion yes uh no i did a floating cushion
or non-floating cushion floating cushion obviously great i mean it was done with green screen of
special effects and wires and stuff but yeah floating cushion but uh yeah well they have
this section uh this segment they bring back called address Council where I basically floated a question to them
and then they kind of like
they addressed it
it was really cool
that's
I'll link that below
and also
myself and Christian Half
who
who runs that podcast
we did a video
on my channel together
about all the best comics
and stuff
and whatever
it goes about 30 minutes
and it's pretty good
well I enjoyed it
I had a good
I had a good time
and just quickly
while we're plugging stuff yeah Steel Wars is going to be at minutes and nice it's pretty good well i enjoyed it i had a good time and just quickly uh while
we're plugging stuff yeah still uh steel wars is going to be at still saunders who does a steel
wars podcast he's going to be at star wars celebration this week and he's podcasting
every day oh wow so he's going to be on the ground floor ground floor ready to see all the action and
business that's going on if there's any boba fett news please let us know please if they're going to
premiere some sort of boba fett wacky physical comedy where he's a mr magoo inspector gadget style character
yeah please let us know absolutely priority number one so yeah so if you yeah if you want
all that information mason you can get that or just wait till sunday and we'll just kind of
recap it from stuff that we've read online stuff we've heard yeah right uh so there's another
killing joke trailer yep that's right but the one that was more interesting to me and you brought recap it from stuff that we've read online. Stuff we've heard. Yeah. So there's another Killing Joke trailer.
Yep.
That's right.
But the one that was more interesting to me,
and you brought this up before the show,
someone recolored it,
like the comic,
which I thought was really cool.
Yeah.
It's a different,
it's a different look.
That being said,
I am really looking forward to this.
So you're looking forward to this.
Yes.
And that comes out at the cinema in a couple of weeks.
24th.
Yeah.
So maybe I think that's also our star trek episode
track that's track isn't it star trek yeah yeah that's our star trek episode so we'll probably
maybe try and do both because we've done we've done some we talked about some animated stuff
before but this is like a kind of different yeah and again my feeling if with these is kind of
mixed yes like i when they did batman year one i didn't really i wasn't on board with the fact
that they directly sort of transliterated all the dialogue from the comic books to
the animation i don't think it really works and then it kicks down the tray
that that part's pretty great sure so i guess it's gonna go but i guess it depends on what
type of comic it is and yeah. I think this will totally work.
Yeah, no, generally I like them. I like more the ones that are based off the classic comics
than this is like a vague Suicide Squad kind of story
or like Assault on Arkham or whatever.
Generally, that's what I've enjoyed more.
Okay.
Well, I'm the exact opposite.
There you go.
That's right.
And you love Ben McKenzie as Batman.
Incorrect.
You heard it and you were indifferent. right and you love ben mckenzie as batman incorrect you heard it and
you were indifferent correct that is correct second time's the charm that's what i always
that's right so sulu from star trek is gay new star trek yes and everyone was like and then
george sakai was like no i don't like it and then zachary quinto was who's also gay was like well i
like it and then other people probably like people probably liked or disliked it.
I liked it or disliked it.
Gene Roddenberry might have had an opinion if he was still alive.
Right, right.
William Shatner might have had an opinion if he was still alive.
He is still alive.
If he wasn't so full of himself and self-importance, I'm sure he'd have something to say.
Maybe Kirk could be back and he could be gay.
He could be gay, but also having sex with lots of women.
And I could be there having sex with lots of women.
It's me, William Shatner.
I didn't go to anybody's funeral who died from Star Trek.
You didn't go to Lennon Nimoy's funeral.
Brutal.
What is that?
Don't know.
They're supposed to be mates.
I'd go to your funeral.
Thank you.
If we did a Star Trek show.
Okay.
Other than that, obviously I'm busy.
Should we knock one out real quick?
Yeah, we better.
Would you go to my funeral if I died after we do our Star Trek episode?
I'd have to wait till it airs.
Okay.
Yeah, then yes.
Okay, great.
Would there be a little in memoriam?
There would.
In the episode description?
I'd play it.
I'd go Patreon, Amazon affiliate link.
Bad camp.
In memoriam of Nick Mason.
I'd appreciate it.
And I'd link Spock's funeral.
Nice.
Good.
It'd be great.
It'd be good stuff.
I mean, they'd slightly change the universe.
Of all the people I met, Nick Mason was the most human.
Those movies.
Some of them are probably good.
Some of them are pretty good.
Have you guys seen Stranger Things?
Yes, we've seen...
Just stop being here, kid!
Get out of here!
Fucking kids.
So, do you have an opinion on this?
I've lost the thread of what we were talking about.
Zulu's gay.
It's not Zulu.
Zulu.
Well, I guess, is George Takei's objection the fact that the original wasn't gay?
Yeah, I think so. Or that he had to be... If he was, he had to be's objection the fact that the original wasn't gay? Yeah, I think so, yeah.
Or that he had to be, if he was, he had to be closeted the whole time?
Oh, right.
But, I mean, you didn't really learn anything about the personal lives of any of the...
No, I remember there's a scene of him shirtless and fencing.
Yeah, that's when he went mad.
He already went mad one episode.
Yeah.
No, Spock went mad like every second episode.
That's true, he did, yeah.
I don't know, but I guess, for me, star trek the you know the the most i guess the most important episodes
are like you know it's it's the personal turmoil of the characters yeah but the vast majority of
the episodes of any given season of star trek it's just this is a goop monster you don't learn
anything about any of the characters they're a team and there's a goop monster and they figure
out how to reverse polarity and they defeat the goop monster and they figure out how to reverse polarity
and they defeat
the goop monster.
That's pretty good.
You don't learn anything
about the characters.
No.
I mean, I guess, you know,
I guess it's been done
in tribute to George Takei.
Yeah, almost certainly.
And he does not like it.
Yeah, so see how that goes.
Well, they change, like,
because Spock has a relationship
with Uhura.
Yep.
Like, that was never a thing.
So, yeah, I guess it's just kind of like that. Maybe he's upset because Uhura yep like that was never a thing so yeah I guess it's just
maybe he's upset
because he's implying
that Eric Banner
going back in time
and destroying that
Federation fleet
made Sulu gay
right
like he wasn't
he wasn't born gay
radiation
radiation made him gay
I guess yeah
well that's
that can happen I hear
if certain forms
are to be believed.
Last bit of news.
Thor Ragnarok has begun filming.
Yeah, great.
As I said, it's a slow news week.
I wouldn't normally report that.
It's the eye of the storm.
Not the eye of the storm.
The peak before the trough.
The calm before the storm.
There we go.
There it is.
Okay.
Bit of sizzle before the steak. That's right. Obviously, we go. There it is. Okay. Because... Bit of sizzle before the steak.
That's right.
Nim, nim, nim, nim, nim, nim.
Obviously, we got Star Wars Celebration the week after that.
We got Comic-Con.
And Ghostbusters.
And Ghostbusters.
Yeah.
When is that coming out next week?
This week.
Yeah.
We're bloody getting into it.
I'm excited.
Yeah.
I'm something.
I'm excited.
Yeah.
So...
I think it's going to be a lot funnier than we think it's going to be.
I think it's going to be fine. Great. That's what I think. Yeah. So, I think it's going to be a lot funnier than we think it's going to be. I think it's going to be fine.
Great.
That's what I think.
Yeah, it doesn't look, honestly, it doesn't appeal to me in, like, it doesn't look original
enough.
Okay, sure.
Do you know what I mean?
Like, it just looks, I'm sure it'll be funny, but what's it bringing you to the table?
The same with, like, Total Recall.
Though, to be fair, that did bring a lot of new stuff to the table.
It just wasn't very good.
Tunnel Through the Earth.
Yeah, that's pretty.
Bryan Cranston.
Kate Beckinsale.
I don't hate the Total Recall remake.
It's fine.
It's more accurate to the original story.
Yeah, but that's less fun.
Yeah, true.
Yeah.
Where's the lady so big that Arnold Schwarzenegger
could fit inside her?
Exactly.
Where's that?
How many boobs do most of the women have?
The average number of women in that movie.
Two.
Two.
In Total Recall, it's slightly
more than two. That's right. And they actually snuck
that into the PG version.
PG version as well, yeah. Well done.
That's a commitment. A few PG virgins,
if you ask me. Doesn't make any sense.
Alright, Mason, you've got a...
You requested a topic
this week. Well, because this week we're sponsored by
Stranger Things, which is a sci-fi type
thing. We're like, what have we got? we got in the list the old list of topics that is
vaguely sci-fi related that we can shoehorn in here yeah and i said with an episode a topic that
i'd like to want to do for a while is and it takes a little bit of explaining it's it's got to be
easy for me to title yeah stories set in the future that are now the past.
So when like a movie or a book came out and they're like,
this is set in the bold world of 2002.
Everybody's plugging the internet into their ears.
Right.
And now that time has passed and we can look back and mock those brave filmmakers
who had a vision of their future,
who tried their best to think of some things that didn't exist.
Yeah.
That's why if you're going to set a movie in the future, you make it post-apocalyptic.
Yep.
So maybe there's still some pianos and shotguns.
Exactly.
Or you go like a thousand years.
And there's no way of knowing.
No one will even remember this when it comes out.
Everyone will be dead.
Yeah.
Everybody of this generation, potentially everybody in the world.
That's right.
Because singularity happened and there's grey go in the world that's right singularity
happened and there's great goop everywhere that's right yeah what what's one of the most famous ones
because you've got a list don't you have a list look uh i try i tried to avoid one like i've got
a list in my head yeah i'm trying to avoid ones that are like this is in 99 this movie's set in
made in 1998 and that happened you know it's set in 1999. Yeah, like 2012.
Right, exactly.
Which was made in 2010.
Yeah, I totally get that.
What about,
what's your opinion of the movie
or the story, 1984?
I have only read the book
and I bloody love it.
So that was 1949.
Yeah, that's incredible.
The novel was 1949.
The movie was 56, I want to say.
Wasn't the movie 84?
Wasn't there actually a...
I'm sure the movie came out in 1984.
Oh, an actual 1984.
I haven't seen that one.
I've seen the version from 1956.
That's got William Hurt.
Oh, William Hurt.
Or the other one.
John Hurt.
John Hurt.
One of those, right.
I'm getting confused.
Yeah, but I mean, that's...
Yeah, that's...
But I'm...
Like the original version.
Okay, sure.
1949.
Right, right.
Big fan.
Massive fan.
The thing about... I think what we should do is we should mock these things based, sure. 1949. Right, right. Big fan. Massive fan. The thing about...
I think what we should do
is we should mock these things
based on accuracy.
Right.
And maybe be like,
okay, here's...
Yeah, here's what happened
in the actual 1984.
But I mean...
We should probably break down
what that...
Because a lot of people
might not actually know
the actual story.
Right, so 1984,
written in 1949,
is set in the future of 1984
where it's set in Great britain yes which has become
new great britain all right i'm gonna look it up i'm gonna do this i'm gonna believe in myself
i remember i borrowed this book from the library yeah and then the last like 20 pages were torn out
so i had to go back and get another copy i was really pissed off yeah i mean i didn't i didn't
read it i just hit a nerd with it, obviously.
I would never read a book.
That's so uncool.
Oh, Oceania.
Oceania.
Yeah.
And this is a sort of a dystopian future
where everybody's constantly under surveillance.
Yes.
They're under the watchful eye of Big Brother
who's sort of their Stalin-esque kind of dictator.
John Hurt to the diary room.
Oh, I get it.
And then sort of, yeah, they're constantly being surveilled by the thought police.
Yeah.
And they have to, you know, they have to stand in front of their television every morning,
which can see them.
And they do an exercise.
They have to do their exercise routine.
And yeah, John Hurt in the movie plays Winston Smith,
who's a guy who he works for a department that rewrites history
as it happens, like something will happen in the real world
and he will take the information of that and rewrite it
so it better befits sort of the totalitarian regime.
And sometimes he'll have to go back.
They'll be like, we have to cut.
Big Brother says we have to cut rations by 10%.
And then the next day they'll be like, well, we actually need to cut it by 20%.
So he'll have to go back and be like, Big Brother always said that we had to cut it by 20%.
Right, right.
And so he works at this Ministry of Truth.
So he works at this Ministry of Truth,
and then he's accosted by someone on the street who's like a woman,
and they start an affair,
and then he sort of has to conceal that from all the surveillance and blah, blah, blah,
and he sort of realizes that this whole world is... Too many thoughts.
Yeah, too many thoughts.
And he thinks he's bloody in the clear and he's ahead of the game,
but maybe he isn't, spoiler alert.
But that's up to everybody to watch that.
Read the book. Oh, definitely book it's not a long book
it's more a novella than anything
that gets a lot of stuff right
yeah well see that's the thing
it is
a lot of these
that we'll probably talk about
are completely inaccurate
but this one gets everything right
it's just 30 years too early
yes
it's almost like
a lot of people use this
as a manual
yeah for the future but it's different because a lot of people use this as a as a manual yeah but
it's not but it's a it's different because instead of like you having to put yourself out there and
be watched by the government and whatever and there is a bit of that everybody instead is
voluntarily giving up this information that's true yeah that's really the key difference yeah
which i guess you couldn't like that's something you wouldn't have comprehended in the 50s that
people would comfortably be like this is where i live live, this is who I am, this is everybody in my family.
This is all my education, here's all the photos of myself, blah, blah, blah, right?
My TV does have a camera on it.
Yeah, that's right.
Because I've got Skype with people and just send that through a server somewhere.
Exactly.
Well, everybody's phone is essentially a listening device.
Yeah, exactly.
If you have Hey Siri on, which I do, whenever it's plugged plugged in It's literally always listening for you to say hey Siri, but also I I can't imagine there isn't technology
And this is not me being paranoid. I'm saying the government I would say could almost certainly this look at this tinfoil hat weirdo
I'm not being paranoid, but the government
Good we could like listen to you through your phone. You you're carrying a transmitter around. That's true.
Do you know what I mean?
I'm not saying that's what they're doing.
It doesn't really bother me.
I saw recently, I don't know when this came out,
I can't remember who has the patent,
but it's a patent for, it might be Google actually.
Right.
And it's basically, it's a patent
and it's got like a storyboard, a diagram of how it works.
And basically it's a TV.
There's somebody at the couch watching the TV.
You might have seen this.
No.
And it's like an ad comes on for McDonald's.
And you can skip the ad, but what you have to do is stand up.
You have to stand up and say, McDonald's.
And then the TV recognizes, this is a real real Peyton like it's not a real thing
but it exists like somebody has has been like you know this would be a good idea
to in order for somebody to skip the ads they have to stand up and acknowledge
the product of McDonald's you have to stand up and be like McDonald's I would
put my foot through my TV before I did that well now you would but I mean
imagine the first mention the imagine it imagine you're watching Game of Thrones
or some TV show you have to watch it
and you have to talk about it on a bloody dumb podcast or whatever.
And then this ad comes on and you're like,
it's a series of ads and you're like, I've got to get through this.
You go, God damn it, you stand up and you say McDonald's.
If you do that enough times, eventually you just get used to to it i guess you would if you grew up with that but
also we live in an era where you can watch things ad free even with like netflix you pay for a
service and then you pay for not having there be ads so i can't imagine unless it's sony sony of course it is yeah pricks but um that's that's that's real like yeah see
here's the diagram i don't know if you can see that that's crazy there's a picture yeah
there's a man sitting alone he's looking at a picture of him there's there's some sort of drama
happening on tv then a picture of a burger appears and the screen says, say McDonald's to end commercial.
He stands up, he raises both hands in victory and he says,
McDonald's.
And then he's back to his action drama, which is probably NCIS.
Yeah, no doubt.
In the future.
I can't imagine that will ever take off, that being said.
Yeah.
And that being said, back to 1984, the thought police of people rewriting.
And it's actually kind of
quaint because he's rewriting history after the fact yeah at this point history is being rewritten
as it's happening like people will get a news story and like a like a photo will come in of
what's literally happening and 30 seconds later somebody will have photoshopped it so it's a
different context yeah and tweeted it and just been like, this is what actually happened.
That's right.
And then it's sort of a race to see what gets the most retweets,
the real photo or the fake photo.
Yeah.
And there's also obviously every news station has agendas,
no matter how like left or right leaning there are
or even how neutral they're supposed to be.
Yeah.
There is always an agenda.
I mean, every bit of information is through somebody else's filter.
Do you know what I mean?
So from that perspective as well, nothing is – you've got to kind of look a little
bit deeper if you really want to know the actual story or just keep living your life
and –
Yeah, just have a bloody good old time, hey?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a harrowing kind of tale of the future that's not completely inaccurate.
Yeah.
Brazil tried to do it, and everybody loves Brazil.
Except me.
No, I don't like Brazil either.
So it's a good book.
I can't speak to the movie, but I've heard it's good.
You can't speak to any kind of movie.
I certainly can't.
Until those ads start.
And then you're going to have to speak to every movie.
Every bloody movie.
Oh, that's a good one to start with.
Yeah.
If you've got one less horrifying.
Well, we're doomed.
Do you want to do this in the year that they came out
or in the year that they're set?
Or just randomly?
Oh, whatever you think.
Actually, we were talking about Star Trek earlier.
Yeah.
We should talk about,
there's an episode of the original series.
So Star Trek, the original series was sort of,
I think this episode came in like 1967.
Right.
There's an episode called Space Seed.
It's most notable for the appearance of Khan.
Yeah.
Khan, who made a return in Star Trek 2.
Boy, did he.
And then in Star Trek Reboot 2.
Yes.
Into Darkness.
Was that Khan?
Because they said it wasn't Khan.
It wasn't Khan.
No, then it turned out to be Khan.
He tuned out for a second.
But when you were tuned out, looking at your phone,
skipping ads on your phone,
Benedict Cumberbatch looked directly at the camera and went,
my name is Khan.
They could have made him one of Khan's, like, associates or followers.
Now, that's a dystopian future, the future of Kahn's. Yeah, that's
right. But don't you think so?
Like, they could have been like, it's not
actually Kahn, he's a man who works for Kahn.
Like, he's enhancing everything. Like, he didn't have to be
No, it doesn't matter. But yeah, Kahn's is a dystopian
future. There is that theory that all the people
have been destroyed. Anyway, so
in the
1960s original
series of Star Trek,
it's set in a vague, undefined point in the future.
Oh, they don't actually date it.
They probably do.
I'm sure they do.
It happens long.
Yeah, I'm sure they do.
But in their past, there was a eugenics war on Earth.
It was like World War III,
and what happened is they produced genetically engineered supermen
to fight their battles for them.
Yes.
And the eugenics wars took place between 1993 and 1997.
Yeah, they did.
They could have set that further ahead.
No, but I mean that's 30 years.
Yeah, I guess.
But that is, I think the key is you want a terrifying future time
that you could conceivably live to.
See, I don't really buy a thousand years in the future.
No, you're right.
Who cares?
Everyone's dead.
I'm dead.
Yeah.
Look, number one thing they got wrong.
Yes.
Eugenics Wars.
Well, Star Trek Next Generation was set in 2364 and beyond.
Oh, okay.
And that was 100 years after.
I can say 2200.
Okay.
Right.
Okay. I wouldn't mind seeing that explored. I know it's years after. Okay, so 2200. Okay. Right. Okay.
I wouldn't mind seeing that explored.
I know it's been explored in novels, the eugenics war.
Uh-huh.
War, wars, whatever you want to call it.
Yeah.
I wouldn't mind seeing that.
Yeah.
Look, notable events of 1993, Bill Clinton playing the saxophone.
Yep.
Jurassic Park came out.
Jurassic Park came out.
That's true.
Very little eugenics wars that year, wasn't there?
So few, right?
A bit disappointing.
What else we got?
Oh, boy.
Let me think of one.
Let me think of a bloody...
I could throw one your way.
Okay, throw one my way.
See what happens.
2001 Space Odyssey.
Yep.
1968.
Yeah.
Yeah, okay.
A lot of that...
I think it's 68.
A lot of that...
That's a pretty accurate stab at a lot of stuff in the future.
You've got sentient robots, which obviously we don't have yet,
but that's kind of coming our way.
People have kind of talked about it
because it's got the rotation-y, wheel-y, gravity thing.
So a lot of the tech is not ridiculous.
What about AI that can read your lips?
I think that would...
I'm going to Google lip-reading technology
and I'm going to find out when that came out.
That movie goes all sorts of places,
but I wouldn't say it's completely...
No, that is...
It's early.
Yeah.
But it's not...
Like, we didn't have any of that shit in 2001.
We don't have most of it now.
But there's a really good Futurama episode
that's based off of it as well, which I enjoy.
Yeah, I mean, we had, you know, space program.
Yeah.
We had space shuttles we had bloody
monoliths we had monoliths exactly monkeys and bones yeah it's pretty it's a pretty good movie
or it's long and makes no sense which one is it i can't remember it's that one i've seen it a
number of times i still don't understand what it is if I'm honest with you. I'm trying to think. I've seen it, but it's very kind of, it doesn't really stick with me.
I don't know what it is.
It's a wonder of filmmaking, though.
Yeah.
And, of course, the biggest event of 2001,
Björk wore that swan goose dress to that awards ceremony that time.
Sure.
That was a big deal.
Big deal back then.
I think Russell Crowe won an Oscar that year as well. Yeah.icole kim and tom cruise broke up oh no that's right yeah that's a
shame yeah renee zellweger won a golden globe award she was in the bathroom when her name was
called hugh grant had to be like hey renee um oh actually uh uh lovely uh, uh, lovely, uh. How much cocaine do you think Renee Zellweger was doing
in that bathroom at that point in time?
Well, she was at the Golden Globes.
That's what I'm saying.
Which are built, like the foundations of the building,
I believe, are built on cocaine.
So a lot of cocaine.
Just bricks of cocaine, yeah.
Yeah.
Popping it up.
Yeah.
All right.
We got to talk Terminator then, I guess.
Yeah, okay.
So the Terminator, 84. Yes. And I guess, I guess. Yeah, okay. So, The Terminator, 84.
Yes.
And I guess 91.
Yeah.
Yeah, okay.
And 2003, or whatever that was.
Right, sure.
And then 2009, and then 2015.
No, because it's too far.
It's too far.
Too far.
And fractured.
So, the apocalypse happened in 1997.
Yes.
August 29th, 1997, specifically.
And also, that's not like, you've got technology wrong.
That's just there was a bomb.
Yeah, exactly.
I guess the technology was that Skynet was made self-aware.
But everything else is pretty much the same.
Right, exactly.
And the only reason it happened is because the machines went back in time in the first place.
So, this is a rabbit hole, isn't it?
No, that's fine
that is fine
I wanted to talk about Blade Runner
but Blade Runner is actually set in 2019
ah so I could be right
no but
the replicants in the movie
were built in 2016
right right
so we're right on the button
we're right on the button
well we've still got a bit of time then
no because
Roy Batty was built in January.
Oh, okay.
So it's too late for him.
Yeah.
God damn it.
Yeah.
We could talk about, do androids dream of electric sheet?
I've never read it.
Okay.
So that's, I mean, it's, that was from the 60s and that's set in, that's set in 1992.
Right.
But I think later printings, they went, oh, let's just make it like 2020.
Right.
Okay.
But I feel that's
cheating not cool man it's not cool yeah but i mean basically it's a it's a it's a society where
the environment has totally been ruined and we have replicant animals that's like it's a status
symbol to have a real animal but if you don't have if you can't afford a real animal because
they're a nightmare yeah yeah you need a you need a plastic shape of some sort that doesn't sound as fun yeah could you even if i had an
animal and it could fully mimic the spirit of my dog which is impossible but let's say it could
right didn't we have this discussion last week maybe yeah but even though like it could be
affectionate or whatever and look like a dog i would you still love it even though like it could be affectionate or whatever, I'd look like a dog. I would just still love it.
Even though you know that it's just a series of like binary kind of
programming going on behind.
I wouldn't,
but I wouldn't be cruel to it either.
Yeah,
that's right.
Cause it would kill you.
Yeah,
definitely.
I don't know.
I just don't,
I don't see the appeal of having a robot animal.
Having a robot is fine.
Yeah.
Cause that's its own thing.
Right.
But what if it didn't look like,
what if it was like that, that like a robot dog was all silver
and it was definitely a robot?
Oh, that's cool.
That's cool.
I'm better with that.
So this is a, this is sort of a...
I think I wouldn't treat it as well though if it, unless it looked like, if it looks
more like a dog, I'd treat it better.
Unless it looked like, like it was off, then I would be upset by it.
Right.
Right.
Was that movie The Seventh, Sixth Day with Arnold? I'm, see that never gives, that never gives a definitive by it. Right, right, right. Was that movie The Sixth Day with Arnold?
See, that never gives a definitive date of when it happened.
Oh, okay, because that's pet cloning.
Some people have estimated 2015, so we can throw it in.
Yeah, yeah.
It's pet cloning and also Arnold Schwarzenegger cloning.
That's true.
Yeah.
And the only indication is a little thing in the eye.
A thing under the eye.
I don't think I ever finished that movie.
You should do it right now.
Yeah, right, I should.
Was he the clone?
One of him was.
Well, one of them had to have been the clone.
Logically.
Yeah, okay.
This is off topic.
What do you think about pet cloning?
Do you think if, say, you've got a kid and he's got a dog
and then that dog gets hit by a bigger dog.
Sure.
And gets squashed. In the form of driving a truck. That's got a dog and then that dog gets hit by a bigger dog. Sure. And gets squashed.
In the form of driving a truck.
That's right.
Dog driving a truck.
Like, do you think it's okay to then go clone that dog and be like, your dog's fine?
Ultimately, I think there's a lesson in things die and you need to kind of get past it and
grieve and don't be such a baby.
Yeah.
And also like, I don't even think that the dog isn't going to behave the same.
Well, environmentally it wouldn't.
No, yeah.
Because, yeah, it's grown up with a different set of circumstances.
And it would have grown up in, yeah, exactly.
It would have grown up with, like, a kid at a different age.
Yeah.
Who's treating it differently.
That's true, yeah.
And I would say it wouldn't even look the same.
Well, depending on what it ate.
Well, but also, like, if it's a spotted dog, it's not going to look, the spots aren't all
going to be in exactly the same.
But if it's a clone, if it's an exact clone, then it wouldn't be.
No, they'd be randomly positioned, I think.
Oh, I don't know about that, Mason.
But if it's exact.
Oh, then great.
It's an exact copy.
Okay.
See, my dog was on the streets for like four weeks because my dog's a street urchin dog.
Yeah.
So like, I'd imagine if i had that dog from
the start it would be a very very very different dog it's like i don't know what happened in that
four weeks we probably kicked around and didn't eat like really sick when we got her probably
selling pencils yeah so you know that's over that obviously would be yeah there are a lot now that i
think about it there's a lot of stuff that's set, that they've gone with like 1997 as the date.
Because it's impending.
It's impending and it's not, and 2000 is a cliche.
Yeah, you can't do it, yeah.
So V for Vendetta is set in 1997.
Right, okay.
So that's another, and that's post,
that's post-1984 1984 but it's still
a dystopian
yeah
when was the movie set
it must have been set
it must have been after
it wasn't
it's not too far ahead though
yeah
I would say it's
we've probably hit that date
I'd imagine
yeah but that's like a
parallel of Thatcher's
bloody London
and whatever
yeah exactly
Thatcher's England
and all that bizzo
the TV series Lost in Space
is set in 1997
oh is it?
Well-
That's when the movie came out as well.
Oh, fun fact.
I think so.
Okay.
Yeah, so the ship launches in 1997.
Right.
The thing is Lost in Space.
So maybe the show itself is set in like 1998.
Yeah, okay, right, yeah.
Oh, no, sorry, Lost in Space is from 1998.
But I mean, it does have some things we had in 1997.
Yes.
So like flailing arm things.
Yeah, that's true.
An anxious flailing arm thing.
In Lost in Space, it was a robot.
But of course, we have wacky waving inflatable arm tube men.
It's got pretentious scientists.
Yeah, we got a lot of them.
Yep.
Always banging on about climate change.
Give it a rest, fellas.
Jeez, am I right?
Scott.
And ladies.
Thank you.
There we go.
What else happened in that show?
I don't even remember it.
I don't remember.
I really loved the movie, though.
There was some great...
There's glimmers of good stuff in that movie.
Right, yeah.
The Iron Man mask.
Yes, great.
I like the original robot.
The actor Lacey Chabert.
That's true.
From Party of Five.
Yeah.
Gary Oldman's in that.
Gary Oldman is in that, yeah.
William Hurt, not John Hurt.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Matt LeBlanc is in it.
It's just blank, Blanc.
Blank, Blanc.
Yeah.
What else?
I'm just looking up what happened in 1997.
Just fun little facts.
Nothing happened in 97.
Oh, no.
Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. Nothing happened in 97. Oh, no. Princess Diana was killed in a car crash.
Nothing happened.
Wow.
Mother Teresa dies.
Yeah, like a week apart.
Good.
What a bitch.
Bad person.
What?
Mother Teresa was a really bad person.
What do you mean?
I don't want to get into it here.
Just give me a...
She was all like, don't give dying people painkillers.
Because pain is...
Give them to me.
No, because pain is part of your penance for being alive.
She's one of those people.
She's awful.
Yeah.
I didn't know that.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Well, thank God she's dead.
That's what I'm saying.
Imagine if she was around for another 19 years.
Yeah. Imagine what she'd be for another 19 years. Yeah.
Imagine what she'd be saying now.
She'd probably be like,
vaccines cause autism.
Shut up, Mother Teresa.
Oh, Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear.
That was a good year, wasn't it?
Yeah, right?
Won't see that in Lost in Space.
Won't see that during the eugenics wars.
Or will you?
Potentially.
I think potentially you would.
I think you'd get a person who was genetically modified
to do that exact thing
yeah
have you read
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
the comic book
oh like bits and pieces
okay
so in
I was just thinking about 1984
because in
because you know it's
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
is sign of
it's like a patchwork of
literary
genius
characters and
and events and things like that
to sort of build this real world out of fake events.
Yeah, I've seen the movie.
I know.
Okay, so in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen world.
The LXG.
Yeah, thank you.
W.
Very good.
1984 actually happened and Britain was briefly taken over by Big Brother.
Okay.
So it became this dystopian 1980s briefly.
Right.
And then the government was overthrown.
That's cool.
And back to normal again.
Yeah, I think that's fun.
That's really cool.
I like that a lot.
All right, you should get into that.
Read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Don't watch the movie.
Which one?
They get weirder and weirder.
Good.
Now give them all the world.
Give them all the world?
Yeah, give them all the world. Just every comic. Yeah. All right, I got it. I mean, look, I, yeah, they get weirder and weirder. Good. No, give them all the world. Give them all the world. Yeah, give them all the world.
Just every comic.
Yeah.
I mean, look, I, yeah, they get weirder and weirder.
And the thing about it is Alan Moore, the writer of it, sort of, he clearly runs out
of pop culture knowledge by a certain point.
Yeah, well, we all do.
Yeah, that's right.
What's Ben 10?
I don't know.
Yeah, I think in his runs out sort of mid-90s.
Right, right.
But then the later issues are set in like 2009 okay
he's got no idea that guy lives in a cave what about children of men oh what use have we hit
that yet maybe we haven't i don't think we have yeah i don't think we've gotten there yet i don't
student of men took a real conservative stab yeah uh and it's oh look in the wake of the
brett the bloody brexit mate it's getting more and more
likely if you ask me just this walled off britain it's in searching for that i searched children of
brexit in google and my mind was otherwise occupied what do we got it oh sorry it's 2027
well that's bloody ages away also and that's but that's also in an era where they've stopped
innovating because they're like
what's the point
so it does feel kind of like now
yeah
and a lot of the stuff
they've got there
is just like
billboards on the side of buses
that move
and stuff like that
it's not massive
and also
this is
I read an article
la di da
yeah I can read articles
no but it wasn't
it wasn't like film drunk
or something like that
so it wasn't that
la di da
but it was about
Big Trouble in Little China.
Right.
And the original script for that, it was set in 1890s, an 1890s western.
Okay.
That was the plan originally.
But one of the reasons they pushed it to the modern era is because then you can concentrate on the story
and you don't have to concentrate on, okay, is that door, is that accurate 1890s door?
Is that accurate 1890s clothing? Is that, you know, you can just be like, okay, is that door, is that accurate 1890s door, is that accurate 1890s clothing,
is that, you know, you can just be like, okay, he's a character,
he dresses like now, he talks like now, et cetera.
And that is kind of, I guess that's one of the concerns of like,
we'll throw this into a future world.
Are we going to, is it going to be a world where we have to go,
okay, is this futuristic enough?
Is that an anachronism?
Are they wearing, is he deliberately wearing retro clothes?
What's going on?
If you go, okay,
children are men,
it's set in the 2020s,
but we've stagnated.
Yeah.
You don't really have to change anything.
That's exactly right.
You can be like,
clothes are the same,
buildings are the same,
cars are the same.
Buses are buses, whatever.
But we've got big screens.
Right, yeah.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, no, that's a good point.
Well, probably one of the most famous ones,
and we talked about this at length last year,
Back to the Future.
Double Dragon, huh?
Double Dragon.
Not Double Dragon?
No, I wish.
Which can we talk about in a second, though?
Is that actually in the future?
That set, well, that came out in 1994,
but I believe it was set in 1997.
What a stab.
And that was a...
They postulated in three years between 1994 and 1997...
How many holograms?
Many holograms, but also that the gang war problem got so bad
that the American government just gave up on fighting gangs
and just said, okay, just agree that you won't bother anybody
during the day, but at nighttime you can have the cities.
It's the purge.
Yeah, it's basically the purge.
They just went, oh, you know what?
Three years, sure.
Just gangs can have every city.
It's fine.
But they didn't count on Mark Dacascos and Scott Wolfe
from Party of Five, once again, cleaning up them streets.
You know what I mean?
How much kung fu does Scott Wolf know, like realistically?
Surely none, right?
I mean, Mark Dacascos a bit,
because he was probably in like a movie called like Steel Hammer
or something like that or Rapid Fire.
Fist of Punch.
Fist of Punch, exactly.
I'm just checking what year Lawnmower Man is set.
Oh, boy.
Now, that would be set the year it came out, I think.
That's one of those ones.
Yeah.
What else we got?
Oh, we were talking about...
Back to the Future is wrong, by the way.
And I don't know why people are so upset by it.
Like, where's the holograms and sharks?
That being said, though, side note, in that movie,
there is a car that looks exactly like the Toyota Prius.
Oh, really?
Like, exactly.
Do you think that's the good people at Toyota?
I think, yeah, I think it's a piece of that.
Hail Toyota!
Arms up.
Everybody listening at home, do it.
Yep.
But do you think they saw that?
I think they did, yeah.
Yeah, because it's got that kind of blocky but swoopy,
it's blocky and swoopy.
Yeah, yeah.
You know?
That still looks like the future,
like a shitter future than what we actually have. Yeah, right. But it's still more futuristic swoopy. Yeah, yeah. You know? That still looks like the future, like a shitter future than what we actually have.
Yeah, right.
But it's still more futuristic than the current future,
which is ahead of...
Do you feel like we're always on the cusp of the future,
but we're never there?
Have you noticed that?
Look...
Like, I'm always expecting...
They're always promising holograms of virtual reality and whatever.
We're never quite...
Yeah, right.
I feel like we've been promised that for, like, one of my favorite authors william gibson will famously said uh the
future is here it's just not evenly distributed and i think that's true in that like we didn't get
flying cars and we didn't get robot servants no but we did get like we got there like we got an
ipad yeah like if you he said also he's pointing to his dick yeah yeah we got this, like we got an iPad. Yeah. Like if you, he said also.
He's pointing to his dick.
Yeah.
We got this baby.
This is the future that you want.
Like he said in an interview once, and I think this is really true,
that if you went into, like if you went 50 years in the past,
if you went to 1966, like to like Mad Men era,
and you went to like a science fiction
publisher and you tried to pitch them 2016 as a sci-fi universe they'd be like this is too much
right if you went okay that we we learned that the heavy industry of the world uh caused a hole
in our ozone layer and and you layer and that caused increasing temperature
and it caused the polar ice caps to melt.
Is that about Highlander 2?
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
And they'd be like, that's crazy.
And so the whole world banded together to stop that and be like,
no, we just sort of –
Just got to ride it out, mate.
We just ride it out.
Okay.
And also there's a disease and it destroys your immune system
and if you get it, you can die from a cold
and you can actually get
it transmitted through sex they'll be like oh my god that's so the whole world banded together to
stop that and be like this sort of it's kind of it's comes and goes some ad campaigns and maybe
like somebody like a charity single and now there's a there's a there's a sort of drugs you
can and it's yeah some pretty good basketball has got it and um everybody in the
world has a device that fits in their pockets and you can access all the world's freely available
information and you can talk to millions of people at once most people use it to send their dicks
to other people this is the future it's the future but is that they'd be like this is too
like all of these are too much information yeah Yeah, yeah. How would you, yeah, how would you explain that?
You couldn't.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
That's a really good point.
We've said this before on the show, but I'd love to go back to like the 20s and show them
like a modern horror film.
Right, exactly.
And just like kill a man.
Just like his head's just explode.
Right, exactly.
Yeah.
Because I think, yeah, like the pace in which kind of movies are made and everything, it's
way different.
Like it's, it must be how like, like we think like Transformers, well, I think Transformers is like, it's too much.
Yeah.
But imagine if you'd never seen anything like that before, like that would just melt you down.
That's why, you know, we're plugging Stranger Things this week.
Sure.
That has that sort of 1980s vibe of like a Goonies or something like that
but the pace
is kind of a
it's kind of a crack
like if you
if you
if you took that
and showed it
in a movie theatre
in the 80s
I think it'd be like
this is going to
people would be like
this is going too fast
it's happening
this is breakneck
yeah
this is breakneck
and like to us
it's like
oh this is the normal pace
yeah
of a TV show now
we've cut out
all the extraneous things
we've cut out
the walk to the telephone
to answer the telephone we've cut out all those things do you think it's- We've cut out all the extraneous things. We've cut out the walk to the telephone to answer the telephone.
We've cut out all those things.
Do you think it's all going to be Vine stars making movies?
Do you think that's what we're going to get to?
Yeah.
Well, because if you look at like The Revenant, people are like, it's too-
I haven't seen it.
People are like, it's too slow.
Too many long lingering shots.
Enough of the woods, you dickhead.
Get up and bring the bear back.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Not like bear back.
Like-
No, bring that back.
No.
What else we got?
What are we doing?
Well, if we're talking time, if we're talking back to the future,
I think we should talk about the far superior time travel movie, Time Cop.
Right.
Which came out in 94 and is set in 2004.
Very good.
Very good.
And if you touch yourself, you explode.
Correct.
If you've got a mullet, maybe.
I don't know.
Which one's...
So, is the 2004 version of Van Damme the've got a mullet maybe i don't know which ones so is the
2004 version of van damme the one with a mullet or are they both not from 2004 uh i can't remember
can i look it up briefly absolutely you can okay that was that was unfair of me that was
you to expect me to know something about a movie that i looked up i can't remember he had a i'm
sure he had a mullet in both i don't think so periods oh i'm looking at all these pictures i remember this
great so much of it yeah do you remember him doing the splits that's exactly what i'm looking at
exactly right john claude van damme of course is max walker famous australian cricketer that's right
maybe he does always have a mullet i know there's some pictures here where he doesn always have a mullet. I don't know. There's some pictures here where he doesn't have a mullet.
But that might be different movies.
Yeah.
I've got to see this again.
Do you?
I feel you absolutely do not.
I've heard Van Damme's a real arsehole.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't know whether that's true.
I've heard he was redeemed by JCVD.
That movie where he plays a fictional version of himself.
Right.
Which I keep saying I'm going to say, but I never get around to it.
I don't know.
No, because some of these he doesn't have, but he could just have his hair brushed back.
That's right.
Or in a little elastic.
A little ponytail at the back.
Yeah.
Right?
Exactly.
It's hard to say.
Who's to say?
You know what?
This was a mistake, bringing up time cop.
Boy, was it.
Yep.
What's even in this future?
I don't even remember.
I know.
Also, in 2004, Mars Rover landed on Mars.
There we go.
That's better.
That's better than a bloody time cop.
Is it?
Yes. Would you want the power's better than a bloody time cop. Is it? Yes.
Would you want the power of time travel? No.
I'm firmly against it.
Thank you. Good. But also, what am I responsible for? A robot on Mars?
It seems like it's going to take up a lot of my day.
I'm excited for Stranger Things
Netflix July 15th.
Stop it!

Kids.
Can't live with them. Can't podcast with them. That's what I say.
Also in 2004, Janet Jackson exposed during this halftime show of the Super Bowl.
What do you want? What do you want?
You want Jean-Claude Van Damme doing the splits?
What do you want?
Do you want some sweet Super Bowl action?
I want the splits, man.
I want the splits.
Yeah.
That's an iconic thing that I'd forgotten
that then really liked when I remembered.
What about the Janet Jackson thing?
Doesn't really do anything for me, to be honest.
People lost their minds, do you remember?
Yeah.
That led to stricter censorship on America in American TV.
It wasn't just like, oh yeah, who cares?
Yeah.
Let's get over it.
It's the future of 2004.
Do you think if that wouldn't...
Like, this is a tragedy.
Children are watching.
But she wasn't even fully exposed.
No, she had like a pasty on.
Or whatever, yeah.
And not only that, I feel like if that happened now, that wouldn't be a big deal, would it?
Would it?
In America, yeah.
I guess so.
I guess if it's on national television or whatever.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
Now, I feel like the reason you brought up this episode
is because you just want to talk about Free Jack.
I just want to talk about Free Jack.
Free Jack came out in 1992.
Look, if you haven't seen Free Jack,
pause this podcast right now go find it on
your your stance it's on youtube i would say almost certainly i'll check i think it is on
you it's in like yeah i think it might be i'll check while you talk yeah but free jack is is in
yeah just just watch it just drink it in it's it's set it's from 1992. Right. But most of it is set in the far-flung future of 2009.
So good.
So if you don't know the plot of Freejack,
I mean, you should have because you've just unpaused this
and you've watched Freejack, but...
There's Anthony Hopkins in it.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
But basically what happens is bloody Emilio Estevez
is a hotshot race car driver in the present day of 1992.
Yeah, he is.
And he's doing a race.
He's in a fiery car crash and everybody thinks he's died.
But what has happened is scientists from the far-flung future of 2009
have used the 2009 technology of time travel and they have removed him from the far-flung future of 2009 have used the 2009 technology of time travel
and they have removed him from the timeline in 1992 and they've sent him to 2009
because their boss, played by the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, is dying of a disease.
Right.
And so what they plan to do is they plan to use 2009's mind transference technology
to transfer Mick Jagger's mind into Emilio Estevez's young...
The ultimate body.
The ultimate body.
The ultimate...
Because that was the ultimate body of 2000...
Of 1992.
Yeah, you know it was.
Yeah.
Just a guy who probably did some Pilates and stuff.
Oh, wow.
By the way, this isn't on YouTube.
I apologise.
Oh, that's a shame.
Not even clips of it
not even best ofs
there's clips
but there's not a
I'm not gonna watch this
it's one of those things
where it's like
it's full movie
and you click on it
and it's like
the link's in the description
oh boo
jerks
yeah
so yeah
so this is a future
2009
in which
they've developed
time travel technology
right and also mind transfer and transference technology that's a lot 2009, in which they've developed time travel technology.
Right.
And also mind transfer and transference technology.
That's a lot.
But not a cure for whatever is killing the Jagger.
Drugs.
It's probably drugs or tinnitus.
It's probably cancerous tinnitus from all his rock and roll gigs. All his rocket, yeah.
So nobody went to the fiery wreckage and went,
there's no body in this car crash.
Because it was too consumed by the flames.
So there was nothing left of him.
Nothing left.
Okay.
Free Jack.
Okay, yeah, it is Free Jack.
Yeah.
You're right.
So is he stuck in 2009 or does he have to go back?
No, he's stuck in 2009.
Oh, no.
Yeah, I know, right?
He'd probably have to get a new ID.
Look at that poster, though.
Look at that Free Jack poster.
That is such a...
Oh, everything about it.
You're the only one who remembers Free Jack.
No, I'm sure...
That's good.
You're bringing it back.
I'm sure some of the people in it...
I'm sure Rene Russo remembers the movie Free Jack.
Do you remember when it came out?
Like, did you go to the cinema to watch Free Jack?
No, I don't think I did.
I'm sure I watched it on home video.
No doubt.
Because of the poster.
In the version of the poster, he's wielding a sweet future gun.
It looks great.
Do you think that was Emilio Estevez being on the way out?
Oh, yeah.
Like at that point.
Oh, 1992.
I was going to say, oh, in 2009.
Because he was in Young Guns around then or maybe the sequel.
Mission Impossible.
When did that come out?
Oh, 95, I think that one did.
Yeah.
Yeah. Wow, so good. that come out? Oh, 95, I think that one did, yeah. Yeah.
Wow, so good.
This looks amazing.
Yeah, right?
Oh, I can see the mind transfer and it's like lightning going between two minds.
That's mind power.
Oh, that's great.
Hey, something else that happened, something else was set in 2009.
Yeah.
Actually, technically it was set in 2012.
Right.
But the apocalypse in it happened in 2009 is I Am Legend. Oh, right. Yeah. Actually, technically it was set in 2012. Right. But the apocalypse
in it happened in 2009
is I Am Legend.
Oh, right.
Yeah, yeah.
Right?
Yeah.
That was set in 2000.
So that was in 2012
but in 2009
the zombie virus.
Had a hit.
What were they called?
I don't know.
Running men.
Running men.
Yeah.
The CGI person virus hit.
That's right.
And everyone got it.
Yeah.
Okay.
But that's, again, that's not really a stab at the future.
That's just like, this is a thing that.
Some of the things that got right though.
Sort of.
Batman Superman.
Batman Superman.
A little early.
A little early, but if anything.
And it used like the Brandon Routh Superman logo.
Yeah.
The Superman logo, right?
Yeah.
That's pretty good.
Yeah.
I remember seeing that and being like, don't do that.
Don't be dicks.
You're never going to actually make that.
Another thing they got right.
I mean, we got the CGI man virus.
But what did happen in 2009?
Dogs.
When did Iron Legend?
2007, right?
Yeah, 2007.
You know what happened in 2009?
Swine flu.
I did too, right. That's enough. You know what happened in 2009? Swine flu. I did too, right?
Nice enough.
Okay, yeah.
That's right.
Did you get swine flu?
A lot of people ended up getting it and it was fine.
I did not get swine flu.
I'm sure I got regular flu at some point.
Yeah, yeah.
I got swine flu.
Whatever.
Yeah, look, every now and then there's a bloody flu or whatever.
Yeah.
There's not really...
I was going to say, speaking of running man virus, the running man.
Right.
But that's set in 2017.
Oh, is it?
So close.
We're nearly there.
Yeah.
When's The Purge set?
It must be like, can't be that far ahead.
Maybe that.
I like those.
No, I like the second.
I haven't seen the third one, but I'm like, this is pretty, you know, it's all right.
It's all right.
It's interesting.
Government, you know?
Yeah, government.
Yeah.
Anything else?
Did you watch The Omega Man with Charlton Heston? I don't think I've seen it. Speaking of I Am Legends. Yeah, government, yeah. Anything else? Did you watch The Omega Man with Charlton Heston?
I don't think I've seen it.
Speaking of I Am Legends.
Yeah, the original one.
That's another movie where they just went,
because it was 1971,
and they were just like,
eh, it's a virus that kills everybody and it's 1975.
That'll do, right?
Because that was kind of an era,
and I guess some eras in movies where you just wouldn't go back.
Right.
That was before home video.
Yeah.
So I guess you just watch a movie and then never see it again.
Never see it again.
It's just done forever.
I'm sure that's what they were banking on as well.
Yeah.
I'm looking at Soil and Greed.
What year is that set?
That's further into the future, I feel.
I don't think it's that far ahead.
Oh, really?
God.
People love Charlton Heston, but he's not a good actor.
Like, at all.
Well, he had the...
No, he was a good actor for his time.
For that kind of acting, I know.
Look, I'm not here to disparage all actors of that era.
Oh, it's 2022.
I apologise.
All actors of that era, what you did is you were just quiet for a long time
and then you exploded with rage and that was acting
that's right that's and maybe you were a juror or something exactly it's just you're quiet and
stoic and then you yelled because men were not allowed to do men were not allowed to emote in
any way in in that era so that was it you could express anger yeah and that was it that's like i
think i mentioned this before there's there's an there's an academy award-winning movie called network right it's from the 80s and it's it's it's set
in this this super high pressure world of you know tv production and tv news and stuff like that
and that people want awards for the acting in that but it's just people being quiet
and then exploding right yeah because that movie was made now but it'd be more like um
what was the one about the Catholic Church sex allegation stuff
oh
Subway
Spotlight
Spotlight
yeah I'd imagine
that's how it would go
because there's
that movie's like
there's not a lot of like
people exploding
like Mark Ruffalo
has a bit of a freak out
but that's pretty much
just people being like
hey let's
let's do our job
let's all do our job
and be nice to each other
yeah
but that network is
the fame
you know
if you've ever seen if you've seen a clip you know somebody just going Let's all do our job and be nice to each other. But network is the fame.
If you've seen a clip of somebody just going,
I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
That's from network.
That's not a real thing that anyone would ever say. No one would ever say it, exactly.
You'd get as far as, I'm mad as hell,
and somebody would be like, shh, what are you doing?
Are you all right?
And I'm not, I've taken all the wind out of my sails.
I don't care anymore. I think Pacino still does all that. Don't you doing? Are you all right? I've taken all the wind out of my sails. I don't care anymore.
I think Pacino still does all that.
Yeah.
Don't you think?
Yeah.
Oh, 1997.
Can we go back to 1997?
Sure.
Escape from New York.
Ah, beautiful.
Love it.
The gangs have taken over.
The gangs have taken over New York.
Well, the gangs have taken over.
Day and night.
Manhattan.
Well, Manhattan's now a prison island.
Is it called something else? It's like New Manhattan or something. Madh over. Day and night. Manhattan. Well, Manhattan's now a prison island. Is it called something else?
It's like New Manhattan or something.
Mad Hatton.
Mad Hatton.
Bad Hatton.
Bad Mad Hatton.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And Snake is sent in to rescue.
Well, no, he's sent in.
In Escape from New York, he's sent in.
Wait.
There's two.
Yeah.
In Escape from New York, he's sent into the prison to receive a cassette that contains...
No, doesn't he save the president in the first one?
That's Escape from L.A.
I don't think so.
I think it's the first one.
The president's plane goes down over New York.
Oh, it is too.
Escape from L.A., he has to go in to rescue the president's daughter, Utopia.
Right.
Who has...
A data tape she has the she has the data tape
for
a super
like an EMP super weapon
that can destroy all the technology in the world
very good
so interestingly
because
Escape from New York came in in 81
Escape from LA came in
forget about it
thank you
Escape from LA came in in 1996
but the movies are set that amount of time apart.
Yeah.
So Escape from New York is set in 1997, L.A. set in 2013.
Right.
That's cool.
Yeah.
But they are essentially the same movie.
Yeah, they are.
They are exactly the same.
Except for the bit where he surfs the wave.
Oh, yeah.
Which is better?
First one.
Really?
The second one's funnier.
Yeah.
The second one weirdly dates more.
Yeah, right.
Because it's got weird 90s kind of special effects that aren't quite right.
Yeah.
Isn't that weird that, like a movie in the 80s, we just go, oh, that's, you know, it's the 80s.
It's pretty good model work.
Yeah, it's fine.
It's great.
But in a movie from the 90s, we go, oh, so 90s.
Yeah, because it's got that weird not good CGI,
and that doesn't look as good as a model or whatever.
Yeah.
I wasn't going to say.
Look, we've nearly got that wall between the US and Mexico,
so that's a good start.
That's right.
I think we're nearly there.
It's a bit late, but, you know, come on.
Yeah.
Better late than never.
Do you reckon they'd do another one of them?
And be like, it sitting 20, 33 or whatever
yeah I hope so
yeah
because I doubt
that's Kurt Russell looking these days
he looks great
yeah right
he looks great
he's got great hair
what do you think?
so good
yeah
they should do it
but they put the eye patch on the other side
just so people would flip out
hardcore fans
or alternate every scene
yeah
do we know how he lost that eye?
I'm sure it's in a book
or a comic or something, yeah.
Did they do a comic of that?
I might be wrong.
I might be thinking of Big Trouble in Little Chinatown.
Oh, no, they did an interim comic set in between New York and LA.
Okay.
Did it run for 10 years or however long that was?
No, it was just the one story.
That's pretty good.
Yeah.
How's his hair? And in the interim, somebody builds a robot that can replicate the behaviours of people.
And so it eventually replicates.
And they're like, we'll use it to track down Snake Plissken because we'll have it behave like him and it'll find him.
Because it's always worked in the past.
But then because Snake Plissken is such a badass bad dude it it turns over to his side because it becomes such like snake plissken that
it's like i'm working for you now does it look like snake plissken not really so it's a robot
that assumes actually i can't remember what it looks like now that i what what i i haven't seen
in a while but in the end snake plissken destroys it because he's like, I don't need no competition.
Yeah, he doesn't.
What is he?
He's like a career criminal.
Right.
That's why he was arrested in the first place.
Yeah.
For like stealing, he's like stealing biological weapons and selling them to the highest bidder.
Like he's not a good guy.
No.
Well, he probably didn't lose that eye in a baccarat game.
Yeah, right?
Yeah.
So, just a quick question on Snake Plissken.
In the first one, they give him a virus, and in the second one, is it a bomb?
It's a bomb.
Oh, wait.
No.
I think it's a virus in the first one.
Yeah.
Okay, one of them's virus, and one of them is bomb on his carotid artery.
Right, okay.
So, either way. Either way. Either way, he's going his carotid artery. Right, okay. So either way.
Either way.
Either way, he's going to have to shoot a satellite out of the sky with a laser.
Yeah.
Which he does in the second one?
Who's to say?
Who is to say?
Yeah.
A lot of this is a guessing game, but I'm okay with it. Boy, is it.
But that's how we do it here at this show.
The show that we're on.
That's right.
What else?
Any more?
We wrap it up.
Yeah, we'll wrap it up.
Let me just knock off
a couple of others yeah 1975's death race 2000 i lived through 2000 i don't remember any death
races fast and furious okay right yeah uh conquest of the planet of the apes that was 1972 that was
set in 91 i was around for that i don't remember any apes doing any conquests.
Zero conquests.
Don't remember any bloody, any of that.
All right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Is that it?
Well, we mentioned Free Jack, so I guess that's important.
That's all we need.
That's weird.
That's mostly why I was here, if I'm honest with you.
It's mostly why I've been doing this podcast.
The Postman from 1997.
Oh, right. The great Kevin Costner post-apocalyptic film is set in 2013.
How about that? Oh, The Post The great Kevin Costner post-apocalyptic film is set in 2013. How about that?
Oh, the Postman's great.
Robocop, they never specifically say when it's set.
But all the additional material, like comic books and video games and stuff like that,
would suggest that the first one's set in 1993.
Yeah.
And the other ones are set a couple of years after that.
So like 94, 96 or seven.
Okay, right.
Okay, sure.
So it's definitely done then.
Yeah.
What do you feel about,
what do you feel about like,
not Robocop,
because obviously we don't have robot cops.
No.
Yet.
Yet.
But what do you feel about the rest of the universe?
I feel it's actually quite tame.
Comparatively to what it really is?
There's, like, bad guys, but they're, like, extreme versions of, like, punks.
They're not real, kind of.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's not convincing.
But, like...
I mean, they shit that guy up.
But, like, you know, there's, like, weird reality television and stuff like that.
Oh, okay, right.
I feel our reality television is significantly weirder than that.
Yeah, it is.
And worse.
Yeah, it's weirder and worse.
Exactly.
And there's like ads for like Yamaha artificial hearts and stuff like that.
Oh, okay.
Right.
Yeah, yeah.
Just looking at Predator 2 set in 1997.
Yeah, but when was that made?
1990.
Oh.
I don't remember that being particularly futuristic.
It was not.
It was just a hot, hot night in the city.
It sure was. We're going to do our Predator episode though, don't we? That's got to come up. Yeah particularly futuristic. It was not. It was just a hot, hot night in the city.
It sure was.
We're going to do our Predator episode, though, don't we?
That's got to come up. Yeah, totally.
At some point.
The War of the Worlds was set in 1939, but it was written in 1938.
But that's Martians.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, that's not on us, is it?
Yeah, that's not our fault.
That was pretty good, Mason.
I enjoyed that a lot.
Thank you.
Look.
Well done.
Thank you.
And I'd just like to give an honorable mention.
Sure. This is just for you and me. Okay. Look, we watched that a lot. Thank you. Well done. Thank you. And I'd just like to give an honorable mention. Sure.
This is just for you and me.
Okay.
Look, we watched it every week.
They promised a future they never delivered.
The Australian TV show Beyond 2000.
Every week they promised us, and you know what it is.
A boat that turns into a car.
A car that turns into a boat.
That's what they promised us literally every week.
Please, everybody who's listening, look up Beyond 2000 car boat.
Every week?
Every week they promised.
They showed us like a Cadillac-looking car,
and then it would slowly drive into the water,
and then the wheels would fold in and it would be a boat.
And they'd be like, this will be headed to dealerships near you.
That's right.
As soon as, sure as shooting, it's going to happen.
Unbelievable.
Never did.
And you know what?
It's bloody beyond 2000 right now.
Well, that's.
Can't go down to my local Kia dealership, get myself a car boat, can I?
No.
Well, they changed the name of it after 2000.
Beyond Tomorrow.
Beyond Tomorrow.
Weak.
That's a weak title.
Very weak.
Pick a date.
Keep it as Beyond 2000.
See, that's the thing.
You'd have my respect beyond 2000.
Yeah.
The British comic magazine 2000 AD, you know what they changed the name to after the year 2000?
Nothing.
It's still 2000 AD.
Damn right.
Because they got some balls.
Yeah.
Well, detective comics, they're not all about detectives, are they?
Almost certainly not.
Mostly it's about Batman.
That's right.
He's a bit of a detective, though, isn't he?
And he's the world's greatest detective.
He is.
But, yeah.
Oh, good stuff.
Beyond 2000, what a joke.
It should be called Punching Things Comics.
Yeah.
It should be called Bat-Themed Gadgets Comics.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I guess the lesson in this is, if you're going to write something in the future, set
it so far ahead that you can never be proven wrong. I don't think we... Yeah. So I guess the lesson in this is, if you're going to write something in the future, set it so far ahead that you can never be proven wrong.
I don't think we, yeah.
Or set it like two years ahead and just have slightly bigger TVs.
Yeah.
And that'll do it, man.
That doesn't work though in a lot of cases.
What, like they don't predict it accurately?
No, because they'll be like, it's, because we don't, we think,
see that's the thing, we think we're on the cusp now.
We think we're, like weusp now. We think we're...
Like, we've got the future in our heads
and we know where it's going to go.
But I'm sure, like...
Everybody thinks that, whatever area they're in.
Yeah, but I'm sure, like, yeah.
But I'm sure, like, when they were, you know,
making some of these movies, they're like,
yeah, in the future, people are going to have massive TVs.
And then they show that future and it's a massive TV,
but it's also four foot thick.
Yeah, that's right.
Like, you didn't know that we were going to go to you know inch thick flat screens yeah yeah yeah
the size of your wall you didn't know like and so we we're like yeah just make the tvs bigger and
flatter we don't know that's where it's going that's true holograms holograms curved televisions
curved televisions you know they're trying to sell the curved television again yeah absolutely
ridiculous yeah you can't make me go back to a curved television, all right?
I live for it.
Hang on, which way?
That's curved out.
It's curved the other way now.
No, that's great.
Why?
Because you can sit right in the middle of it.
It doesn't wrap around you.
It's only slightly curved.
Well, maybe it should.
That's what I'm saying.
In the future, TVs that wrap all the bloody way around you.
Why don't we make some predictions then?
Some real predictions.
Oh, future predictions.
Okay.
I think there's going to be a lot of VR stuff.
You've got it now, mate.
No, no, but it's not.
You mean not as a gimmick.
You mean.
I mean like it's going to be like a lot of entertainment and stuff.
Okay.
Wait, are we saying predictions for movies or our actual predictions?
Just whatever.
We're becoming futurists is what you're saying.
Okay.
Oh, I hate futurists.
I hate them. I always see them on a show and they're like, and they're 2020. And I just in my becoming futurists is what you're saying. Okay. I hate futurists. I hate them.
I always see them on a show
and they're like,
you're 2020.
And it's in my head.
I'm like,
shut up.
You don't know.
Give me my car boat.
I don't know.
I've got no predictions actually
but I kind of think about it.
Probably another war.
Probably get another one of them.
Great.
That'd be pretty good.
What about like wearables?
Like wearable computing stuff stuff do you think we're
going to go towards the more apple watchy stuff because everybody seems to hate those i don't
like well i don't like them because i'm a guy who wears a watch generally you nerd but i don't want
to like wear like different watches so i stopped wearing a watch with my phone i'm like why am i
wearing a watch it's pointless no but i'm saying you're saying it's like a fashion fashionista
but i'm saying like i don't want to have to wake up in the morning
and go, okay, I'm wearing brown shoes,
so I've got to switch out the band on my watch
and put a brown band on.
Right, right.
Like on my Apple Watch.
I'll just put a different watch on.
I don't care for the hassle, mate.
Yeah.
You know?
On Beyond 2000 once I saw they had spray on clothes.
They're like, this will fit you perfectly
because you'll spray it on
and then at the end of the day you just tear it off.
Like, yeah, that's going to happen.
I can't think of anything more disgusting than walking around the streets and the average
man on the street is wearing a spray on suit.
Exactly.
Because they got like Matt Shervington to try it.
And he's like an Olympic athlete.
So yeah, he looks great.
Even then.
Yeah.
But like a regular person, no.
Boy, beyond 2000. And then you peel it off
at the end of the day.
Like a Spider-Man symbiote suit.
What if you have to go to the toilet?
I don't know if I do pants.
Oh, it's just a shirt.
Yeah.
I guess it's for athletes.
Just leaving
just sweaty shedded snake skin everywhere.
Ugh.
Ugh.
And they were like, look, you can spray different colors.
And it was like, you know, they'd spray like fluoro down one side.
And be like, that's the future.
I'm like, that's nothing.
That's not the future.
You've invented nothing that anybody will like.
That's my prediction anyway.
Spray on clothes.
Spray on clothes in virtual reality.
Those are your two.
Great.
Great.
You're going to go with one or you're just going to go whatever?
Another iPhone.
They'll make another one.
Curved.
Oh, maybe.
What about bendable?
Bendable.
I think bendable is coming.
I think bendable is, I don't know.
Because you can wrap them around your wrist.
Yeah.
And there's also the ones, have you seen the concepts of you wear a thing on your
wrist, like a bracelet, and then it projects onto your wrist?
Oh, yeah.
So you get a little, but I don't know whether that little, because it's not really tactile.
We just press it into your wrist.
Well, it is tactile, I guess, in the sense that you press it into your wrist, but I don't
know, man.
I hate anything where it's like, turn any surface into a keyboard.
No.
It's like a little and shoots down like a laser.
I need the feedback of actual keys.
You did it.
Thank you.
That's why I had this computer.
Nice.
For that exact moment, I knew I'd need that sound effect.
He's just playing off a soundboard.
Keyboard noise.
He's got a variety of noises.
James, play Angry Mashing on your keyboard.
Play that sound.
Play I'm angry on the internet
oh shit
what did you do
I just shut down my computer
you idiot
I had stuff unsaved
oh boy
did you really
no I can cancel it
it's like
so good
it's like a new
it's like
are you sure you want to shut down
are you really angry at the internet
see that's Windows 10 for you
it knows
I didn't update
oh that's Windows 10
wouldn't do that for you
yeah that's right
yeah
alright that'll do it.
Let us know if we've missed a future storyline that's already happened.
And not like one that's like...
97, 98.
...set like a year after.
Yeah, yeah.
If you've got a fave.
Or even if you've got a favourite one, like a favourite bit of technology that you're
like, what a balls thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Good stuff.
All right, on with the next segment.
Next segment.
What we're reading well we're gonna
read same music i'm doing the thing
what are we reading today mason what are you reading this week or gonna read oh actually
what i'm gonna read actually what i did read. Interesting. In terms of I watched. Right.
I watched two episodes of a Netflix show that isn't out yet.
Yes.
We got an exclusive look at it.
We've finally done it.
We've made the bigger time.
We finally got an exclusive look along with, we assume,
hundreds of other podcasts who got an exclusive look.
We got an exclusive look at a show called Stranger Things.
Yes.
By the Duffer Brothers.
Yeah.
Great name.
Great name. Is that an Australian word? You're bloody silly the Duffer Brothers. Yeah. Great name. Great name.
Is that an Australian word?
You bloody silly Duffer.
I think it might be.
My dad used to say it to me.
I mean, obviously, because they're not.
Oh, no, it's a British thing.
Oh, is it?
The Duffer of St. George.
I don't know what that means.
Anyway, the point is.
Probably some kind of murderer.
Yeah, but it's like a drama set in the 80s.
Yes.
In Indiana.
And I don't think, we can't spoil too much of it. No, well, it's not ours. Exactly, right? But I don't think, I think we can't spoil too much of it.
No, well, it's not ours.
Exactly, right?
But I don't want to even say too much.
But there are trailers of it.
So it's basically,
it's kind of centered around a small town,
a group of kids and some adults
who were affected by the disappearance of a boy.
This is all given away in the trailers.
But it's done in kind of the style of,
it's exactly what super 8
tried to do yeah but this from the two episodes that i've seen we've seen succeeds in doing so
where super 8 completely fell down in my eyes now you were saying it's kind of it's it's spielberg
yes because you know what it is spielberg-esque it's kind of your goonies your at but it's also
like it's got like and it is dead on like the 80s that's how it looks and not kind of your goonies your at your at but it's also like it's got like and it is dead
on like the 80s that's how it looks and not kind of a garish over the top yeah like hey we're in
the 80s it's like the 80s as it is but like it like it's the 80s like on film yeah but but i in
high def and be like it's got the the pacing of a modern show. It feels modern and it's got this tension to it.
You were saying it's Goonies, it's E.T.
It also has, for me, this true detective,
like season one.
Yeah, absolutely.
This impending.
Yeah, this foreboding and this tension.
It's got sci-fi elements to it,
but it's really very compelling.
Yeah.
I think.
And obviously, like we've talked about it before, like this is obviously a paid promotion,
but I've mentioned it a few weeks back that I'd seen it and how much I really enjoyed
it for free.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
Right.
You know what I mean?
Like this is the kind of thing where we, that, you know, they say, can we talk, can you talk
about it?
We said, we'll talk about it, but we won't say it's good if it's not good.
We said, yeah, here's the, here was the clue.
This is the canary in the coal mine.
If it wasn't good, we wouldn't be like,
oh, this is great.
We'd be like, we've been promoting Stranger Things.
Why don't you watch it and see what you think?
You know, because that's the low.
But I watch this and I'm like, where is this going?
This is, why isn't the rest of it out yet?
What have you done to me, Netflix?
Well, that's exactly what I'm saying.
You normally release the whole season at once.
Why have you only given us two?
I'll find you and I'll get you.
Exactly.
And that's the thing I felt.
Look, when I finished watching the two,
I'm like, I really would have just kept watching it.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's the kind of thing also I've been tempted,
I have it, to share it with other people.
Except it's got my name emblaz. It also has my name across it.
So obviously it's not something I can really show anybody else.
But look, I don't know whether it's going to stick the landing.
Maybe it goes all lost.
It kind of loses it towards the end.
But I feel like we live in an era, and this is tightly enough.
We live in an era called Netflix.
We certainly do.
Where there aren't really any bad shows.
No.
And the thing, as I've said with most Netflix shows,
I would say even all,
all the shows that they've made are exactly what they're supposed to be.
Like Full House is not good, but it is Full House.
It's exactly Full House.
Right.
What do you want?
You know what I mean?
Like they nailed Full House.
Voltron, another one.
Bloody loved it.
But this really has the vibe of like,
we're kids and we're on a mysterious adventure,
but also like there's this,
there's this darkness and foreboding about it,
which are really.
I've also said it's like a good episode of the X-Files.
Like,
you know,
one of the classic kind of like,
is it a monster?
Is it a ghost?
Is it an alien?
It's got that kind of,
like,
is that,
it's got that kind of feel to it.
Not every episode of X-Files is good. So let me stress that. I mean, when I say it's like the X-Files, it's like a good of feel to it yeah not every episode of x files is good
so let me stress that i mean when i say it's like the x files it's like a good episode of the x files
and this is a show first of all it's got kid characters aren't annoying which is nice yeah
i know but it's also it's it's in in terms of like it's it's set in the 80s it doesn't really
this is this is kind of its own thing like it's just you don't really see it often anymore but
it's like remember when shows and movies had kids in them but they weren't kids movies yes you think of like the bad news bears
or something like that this is a show that has kids in it but it's not a kid's show it's no no
that's that's very true and there was yeah right there was a lot of that a lot of that in like this
the 70s and 80s and whatnot also what i appreciate about these kids they're kind of nerdy kind of
outcast kids but they're not it nerdy kind of outcast kids,
but it's not your stereotypical,
like they love D&D and whatever and all that kind of stuff,
but it's not over the top.
It's to the level of, oh yeah, I was a kid like this,
or like I knew kids like this, you know what I mean?
And you believe the friendship,
you believe the characters from that perspective.
You're never like, well, that's a pretty shit kid actor.
Like, do you know what I mean?
You never kind of feel that.
And Winona Ryder's in it. Winona Ryder's in it.
Matthew Modine is in it.
Yeah, yeah.
We're talking the 80s and the 90s, man.
You bloody know it.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, look,
obviously if you've got Netflix,
it's free.
You'll be getting this for nothing.
Look, it might be worth actually
even giving Netflix,
they do a free trial, don't they?
They do a one-month free trial, yeah.
Just get it, man.
Just bloody give it a go if you want.
Yeah.
Great promoting, Mason.
I think so.
It's easy when you actually like it, though.
Right?
Good.
All right.
Did you know Stranger Things is out July 15th?
Hit the bloody bricks, mates.
How does he keep getting in?
I don't know.
I don't know.
He's probably...
He's so slippery and greasy.
That's probably how he's doing it.
I'm telepathic and I can teleport.
Oh, you've got many powers.
Okay.
Well, get out of here.
Teleport out of here.
This isn't the time.
I don't want to.
You're the worst.
I don't think I've read anything else.
I watched the CrossFit Games on Netflix.
I don't know why.
What?
It was a recap.
Why is it on Netflix?
CrossFit has come to Netflix.
Why are you watching CrossFit?
Because it's my dream. Are you recording this? It's all recording. Great Why are you watching CrossFit? Because it's my dream.
Are you recording this?
It's all recording.
Great.
I'll probably cut it out.
It's my dream.
No, CrossFit.
You're leaving this in.
You talk about CrossFit.
No, because I had the games from last year and I watched it.
And it's just people going, I want to be the fittest man in the world and whatever.
But it's like, you're the fittest man at this very specific thing.
Like, I don't think that means you're the fittest.
Like, define fit like because you think somebody can run a marathon is better than a guy who can
do a chin up and climb a rope and swim in a river do you know like what's the what is it what's the
definition well i mean realistically nobody has to be fit no not if you unless you want to wear
a spray-on shirt yeah then you're fine see we've tied it in you can't you can't get rid of it now
you put a sweet joke in there.
You know what I did watch?
I finally watched Sicario.
Okay, sure.
Which is that movie with Emily Blunt and Guillermo.
I was going to say Guillermo del Toro.
Yeah, yeah.
What's his name?
Benicio del Toro.
Benicio del Toro.
Yeah.
Guillermo's brother.
It's really good.
Okay.
Tension never breaks.
It's very good.
They're doing a sequel actually to that.
Very, very intense, really.
I haven't seen it yet.
I really want to see it.
Good stuff.
And now it's time for the next segment of the show mason are you ready for it
that was too fast nailed it buddy rub that on your gums, mate. So good.
It played before.
You're finished.
It's a balance.
It certainly is. That's my problem is my reflexes are too good.
I don't wait for you and sometimes I'm too fast.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
Let me just reopen this because I shut it down.
Okay, great.
I've got to find all the letters.
And by letters, I mean tweets.
Because if you want to contact the show, Mason,
you can just text me directly.
But for everybody else, if you want to contact the show, Mason, you can just text me directly.
But for everybody else,
if you hashtag Weekly Planet Pod on Twitter,
then yeah, you can bloody get into it.
Send us a question and we'll get around to it.
We'll get there, won't we, Mason?
We'll get there.
And we won't do all of them,
but we'll do some of them.
In this case, three.
Hang on.
It's still loading.
What is happening here?
Here we go.
Okay. This is from Dem? Here we go. Okay.
This is from Dempsey Tapley.
Dempsey Tapley.
Ask Dempsey Tapley.
Are you guys going to talk about Poke Mongo?
Oh, Poke Mongo.
Look.
Look, I think it's a cruel circus freak show.
And look, I know people are lining up around the block and they're tweeting about it.
And look, I just don't think you should poke Mongo.
You know?
Because he's lived a hard life.
He's a little different.
He's a little different.
And people are just like, yeah, man, I'm loving it.
Going back for seconds.
Poke Mongo.
So on an unrelated topic.
Yes.
Do you know anything about Pokemon Go?
I don't know.
Look, I'm aware it's an app.
Is it a trick to get people to be more active?
It might be.
I downloaded it last night because I got a few tweets about it.
I'm like, I guess I should look into this.
So, I opened it up and then there was a...
It's augmented reality.
So, I look at my phone.
But it seems very basic.
Yeah, it's very, very basic. So, there was a... That's why I suspect it's augmented reality. So I look at my floor. But it seems very basic. Yeah, oh, it's very, very basic.
So there was a.
That's why I suspect it's a trick.
Oh, right.
It's like a pedometer.
Yeah.
Does it count your steps?
Yeah, I think it measures where you've been or whatever.
Okay, right.
So it's sitting on the floor and you flick a ball at it and you catch it.
But like my brother, the one you don't like, he's a Pokemon guy.
He's bloody into it.
But he gave it a go. And apparently there's like a meeting point at the end of his street for Pokemon trainers. And he's like, oh, don't like. He's a Pokemon guy. He's bloody into it. But he gave it a go,
and apparently there's a meeting point at the end of his street
for Pokemon trainers,
and he's like, oh, I don't want that.
Do you meet at a specific time?
Yeah, I guess so.
Like a virtual meet-up area.
I can just imagine that.
They're hiding behind bushes.
They're staring furtively at it.
Should we meet?
Is it meeting time?
Yeah, that's right.
Do I just stand there?
That'd be so odd.
What an odd social experiment.
It caused a pile-up as well,
because people are driving and try to catch Pokemon as they drive.
How do you...
Does it say, okay, there's a Pokemon...
Yeah, I played it for maybe five minutes.
Does it give you clues, or do you just wander around until you find something?
I think it's a lot of wandering, but mine came up on the map.
It's like, there's one right near you.
And then it happened to be like directly in front of me.
I'm like, good, because I'm not going outside.
That's the trick.
Yeah.
Look, I feel that this has been produced by Nintendo in conjunction with the Department of Health or something like that.
Or LifeBeat in it or, you know, like, get moving, do your 10,000 steps a day.
Right.
You don't want to do that because it sounds like a small amount of work.
Well, here's a game.
Follow these little flying things.
Yeah, yeah.
They don't really fly.
They just kind of stand there or the ones I saw.
I don't know.
Look, it's not my scene, man, but people seem to really love it.
Yeah, people are into it.
It's like good on them.
This is like every now and then you get like a bloody Tamagotchi or whatever.
That's my only example of that.
You know,
like a fad kind of thing that comes in.
Yeah.
Right.
Okay.
Do you get,
is there,
is there rankings?
Can you become the best Pokemon collector?
I'm sure that I'm sure there is.
Yeah.
I'll do it.
I'll do it to prove you all wrong.
All of you said I couldn't be the best Pokemon collector.
They're Pokemon collectors.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's Pokemon collectors,
but yeah,
people say, you know what? It's if, if it. Yeah, there's Pokemon collectors. But yeah, people seem to...
You know what?
If it is getting people active or whatever, and if it's building communities and people
aren't being dicks to each other, great.
Go for your life, mate.
Well, I'm going to guess people are being dicks to each other.
I wonder how many fist fights have started.
Right.
Okay, here's a question for you.
Are they all interlinked?
Yes.
Can only one person catch a particular pokemon so if
there's going to be a lot of collisions oh yeah oh yeah there already has been so yeah it's only
gonna increase wow there's gonna be bar fights so i cannot wait actually now that i think about it
i cannot wait for two really drunk aggressive dudes who are also on pokemon go for some reason
to be like oh there's a pigiotto that a Pokemon that I don't know the name of.
No doubt.
And they both run towards it,
and they run into each other and spill somebody's drink,
and there's a massive fight.
What are you doing?
Where are you going?
You want to go?
You want to have a go?
There's a bit of that.
Yeah, there's always a bit of that.
Great.
Anyway, good stuff.
So in conclusion, no.
That's what I'm doing.
I'm going to do literally anything else.
I'm going to go for a walk unadorned by technology,
except I'm going to check Twitter and Facebook every 30 seconds.
I need to have my headphones in as well.
Yeah, I'm going to have my headphones in.
Look, I'll listen to a podcast while checking Twitter and Facebook and Instagram.
Whilst crossing a road.
Crossing a road.
I need to get a cupcake.
But I ain't going to be swayed by this bloody technology, you sheep.
You bloody sheeple out there.
I won't be swayed.
Why would you?
You're your own man.
I'm my own man.
This is from Pancakes.
At Pancakes underscore 91.
Hashtag weekly planet pod.
What do you guys think Marvel has planned for the future after credits scenes?
Are we talking after Infinity War happens?
I guess, just anything upcoming.
So we've got Doctor Strange coming up.
We've got Spider-Man next year and Thor Ragnarok next year.
Do you think they're tied together thematically?
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
Yeah, I think it depends on the director.
Yeah.
I think, because I know Thor Ragnarok, they do sometimes they don't yeah i think it depends on the director yeah i think because i
know thor ragnarok this that post-credits scene was from guardians that james gunn shot so like
that was really thought you mean thought the dark thought the dark wood sorry yeah that was really
jarring i remember being like whoa right yeah yeah exactly yeah like even though it did tie
into the story it was still kind of like this is weird as hell yeah because sometimes and also is it Age of Ultron
where Thanos just shows up
and he's like
fine I'll do it myself
that was so balls
that was
like I like that
we'd seen it though
yeah
I like James Brolin
just Josh Brolin
whichever one
I like both the Brolins
but I like Josh Brolin
just sorry
bloody Sicario
but
yeah it was just
I mean there were
vague hints
I mean that was were vague hints.
I mean, that was the point where they were like,
clearly we've run out of time to explain the Infinity Gems, etc. So we've just got to throw in some exposition.
Thor's just going to throw out their Infinity Gems and blah, blah, blah,
and I've got to go out into space or whatever.
But it was still kind of jarring to just have Thanos show up
and be like, put my Infinity Gauntlet on, here we go.
Yeah, that's a good point.
Because it's weird to have, because that's new footage, but if you don't stick around
to see that, you would never know that existed.
No.
Unless that's going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, maybe?
I have no idea.
Right?
Well, we'll see a bit more of that at Comic-Con.
Yeah.
Well, actually, I don't know whether that's actually going to be released to the
public.
I mean, the Thanos stuff I think works
in the Avengers because he planned that invasion.
Yes. But Age of Ultron, there was a
robot that took over the Earth and then it cuts to space.
Did he plan that invasion?
Yeah, but if he did, which I think he
may have, because that's got
Ultron is Chitauri tech.
Yes. Some of it.
But they didn't make that clear.
Yeah, right.
I'm sure that's something they'll reveal later.
Yeah, like after the fact, they'll be like,
well, it's a Chitauri virus and blah, blah, blah.
It's a Chitauri virus with the mind of Tony Stark.
It's the worst combination of things.
What I guess I want is, yeah,
I want stuff that is leaning towards the plot
I don't want
I don't really want your Howard the Duck kind of
Okay, your funny, your goof thing
Yeah, I want
What if there's two?
Can you have a goof one if there's two?
Yes, you can have a goof one if there's two
Okay
How about we
Oh, yeah
Yeah, okay
Here's what I want
I want mid-credits
Yep
Plot one Yep Post-credits, plot one, post-credits, goof one.
Okay, fair enough.
Because then even if you're a casual viewer,
you might stick around for the mid-credits one.
And you're like, oh, I get to see this.
And then in the goof one, you're like,
oh, Spider-Man fell on his butt.
That's pretty good.
That's my prediction for Doctor Strange.
Spider-Man falls on his butt.
Okay, great.
Yeah.
My favourite ones have been the first one,
which is the Avengers, Nick Fury one.
I like the Thor's hammer one.
See, that's the one that when I think post-credit sequence,
that's the first one.
Because you get a sense of where the next one's going.
Right.
And it's new footage, but you get a sense of like,
okay, I know where we're headed for this
and we know that it's going to be built around the hammer and et cetera.
I guess they can't really do that as much anymore
unless they're introducing a new character.
Yes, that's true.
But even then, that character would have to have something distinctive about them.
Like they're a duck.
Like they're a duck.
Just a pile of feathers.
Like, oh, I know where this is going.
Okay, so what are your other favourites?
I don't know.
I think that's about it.
I like...
No.
Yeah. I didn't like. I think that's about it. I like... No.
Yeah.
I didn't like the preview to Civil War because it's just a clip.
Yeah, that was weird.
I know people are like, that's good and it fits.
That doesn't really fit. And that clip also seems to suggest that they found Bucky in a drill press.
Yeah.
But they didn't.
They put him in it.
Also, they were like, I know a guy who can help us.
Yeah. And they mean Ant-Man-man correct but why him specifically because they get like a team right they get like six people when ant-man he does help but they all that's true do you know
what i mean i thought it was because they'd come and he'd shrink him and to get him out of it that's
what i thought as well exactly you're right but in the in the end they would that was there were
two separate little clips that they'd mashed together. Right, right.
Anyway, that one was balls.
All I want is reverse that one.
That scene works in the movie that it's in.
Yeah, it definitely does.
Don't take stuff out of context, guys.
It's rude.
It's mean to me.
Don't trick me.
Don't like being tricked.
Okay, this is from...
What do we got here?
Just don't trick me.
That's all I want.
Don't be tricked.
This is from David Cano, at David Cano.
1K, 2Ns.
He's got in early there.
Yes.
How many Earth-based Green Lanterns...
Wish I had Nick Mason.
See who it is.
I bet it's a guy who's never tweeted.
Yeah, it's always the way.
Or it's available,
in which case I'm switching.
Right now, live on air.
How many Earth-based Green Lanterns have there been,
and which do you want to see in the Green Lantern Corps?
Oh.
Now, I've got a follow-up question in case we can't enable the Green Latins.
I certainly can't.
Okay.
Look, I'm sure I'll miss...
Hang on, just checking myself before I wreck-a-myself.
All right, Nick Mason, at Nick Mason on Twitter.
Picture of an egg.
Picture of an egg. One following, 108 followers, no tweets.
You son of a bitch.
He's just parked it there.
He's just parked there.
He wants me to buy it.
Don't care.
I'm at Wikipedia Brown, a joke that doesn't work anymore.
I'm happy with it.
If you get famous enough, though, I think you could take that from somebody.
That's true.
I get my verified tick.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's interesting.
Yeah, so, I don't know.
So, we've got...
Look at this.
Because there's two...
So, the actual famous Nick Mason is Nick Mason, the drummer from Pink Floyd.
Yeah.
Right.
He's at Nick Mason Drums.
Right.
Because he's the drummer, which makes sense.
But there's also a Nick Mason Music.
He's clearly gotten it first.
Son of a bitch.
What's he doing? I don't know, but he's got... He's clearly gotten it first. Son of a bitch. What's he doing?
I don't know, but he's also a drummer.
He's got 353 followers.
Well, you're somewhere in the middle of that, aren't you?
Yeah, that's right.
I'm no Nick Mason drums, let me tell you.
Although if I learn the drums and somehow surpass his fame.
What are we talking about?
Green Lanterns.
Oh, yeah, okay.
So, well.
Hal Jordan. Well, there's Alan Scott.
Alan Scott. Great Scott.
Although technically
no, because he's got a different Green
Lantern ring. His Green Lantern
ring was powered by the Star Heart, which is the
opposing magic
of the, it's different magic.
I know what the Star Heart is.
It's still Green Magic, but it's a different
Green Magic. I hear you man. Anyway's still green magic, but it's a different green magic. I hear you, man.
Anyway, there's him.
That's why his ring's vulnerable to wood, not yellow.
Yeah.
Then there's Hal Jordan, the original.
Yep.
Fearless test pilot.
Right.
And he.
Ryan Reynolds.
Yeah, Ryan Reynolds.
My dog's having a dog right now.
And there's also Guy Gardner.
Yeah.
Guy Gardner's Mr. Bowl Cut. My fave. He doesn't have. And there's also Guy Gardner. Yeah. Guy Gardner's Mr. Bowl Cut.
My fave.
He doesn't have a bowl
cut anymore.
Maybe he should.
He initially was a real
jerk.
He's mellowed a lot
since then.
He was the one of two
original, he was one of
the two potential
recipients of the
Green Lantern Ring
originally.
Yeah.
Because both he and
Hal Jordan feel no fear.
But he was further
away.
So he missed out. He was slightly further away. that's like Pokemon go mate I know right he's gonna be real
close I wonder how far he was away yeah I hope it was a matter of yards yeah that would be great
or even how about this he stopped to tie his shoe he stopped to tie his shoe or he cut in line at
the movies in front of Hal Jordan and he's like hey I'm walking here and then he cut in line at the movies in front of Hal Jordan. And he's like, hey, I'm walking here.
And then he got in front and then it was like,
the Green Lantern ring has chosen you, Hal Jordan.
You are a foot closer.
And Gagard's like, God, son of a bitch.
God damn it.
Okay, so there's Jon Stewart.
Yep.
Not the host of The Daily Show.
No.
He's a big fan.
That's Trevor Noah.
Yes.
But not the former host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart.
Right. It's actually, he's an architect named Jon Stewart. Yes. But not the former host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart. Right.
It's actually, he's an architect named Jon Stewart.
Yes.
He's an African-American man.
Yes.
So it's good they're putting him in more stuff.
He's in Justice League Unlimited cartoon, which is good.
He's the one that people want to see.
Yeah, right.
Well, it seems the majority of people would.
Yeah, yeah.
That'd be good.
But if we're getting a Green Lantern core movie, I want Jon Stewart, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner.
That's what I want.
Okay.
Just them?
Yeah.
Like have others, but they're like the core, as it were.
The Green Lantern core.
And the squirrel, Gnort.
But he's not human.
This is just human.
Also Kyle Rayner.
Kyle Rayner, yeah.
Is he gay?
There's a gay one, isn't there?
Probably, but he's not isn't he well he
famously has a so he famously has had a girlfriend who was murdered specifically Alan Scott is the
gay Green Lantern yeah sorry he not originally but then they yeah so um radiation yeah so there's a
trope there's a there's a trope in fiction called Women in Refrigerators, which is essentially...
It's famous.
Bloody look it up, mate.
And it's essentially, it's like when they just create a love interest,
they don't give them any depth.
They just make them exist.
Yeah, they make them exist for the sole purpose of murdering them
so the hero has a goal goal or like some drive or purpose
yeah it's kind of like so that trope is so named because kyle rayner he's given the last at the
time was the last green lantern ring and he's like he doesn't know what he's doing and he's
and he's he's a rookie yeah so there's a like an evil corrupt segment of the government who are
like now now's our chance to get a green Lantern ring, we'll kill this guy.
So they send in a Captain Atom villain called Major Force,
who's essentially just an indestructible murderer,
to his house to kill him.
Right.
But he's not home, but his girlfriend is home.
Right, right.
And so Kyle Rayner gets home and there's a note on the kitchen counter that says, there's a surprise for you in the fridge.
And his girlfriend has been murdered
and stuffed in the fridge.
Brutal.
Brutal, right?
So it wasn't a good,
it wasn't like,
I bought you some beers.
No, well, maybe.
Maybe there's some beers behind the cups.
Real bad.
Yeah.
What did that happen?
This was the 90s.
This was 90...
Yeah, that's a very 90s thing, isn't it?
Yeah.
Because that's before people
would even think about this.
Because it's,
I guess it was like when it was just,
when everything was a boys' club.
Yeah, right.
Like it's one of those things where people,
you didn't even think about it.
You're like, well, you know, here are needs and motivation.
Okay, kill his girlfriend, who cares kind of thing.
Before anybody went, hey, you know how 50% of the population
probably wouldn't want to be murdered as a plot point?
Sure.
Maybe think about that first.
I don't know, I don't know i don't know maybe
but was she was a character in her own right in any way or was it no i mean because she she was
killed after like two issues yeah because wouldn't it be more interesting if you're going to kill
somebody you kind of build them up first yeah definitely yeah i mean the punishers family like
exists to be murdered sure like gwen stacy didn't do much until she was murdered like she was around
but she didn't really yeah do anything yeah but i mean yeah but at the same yeah i guess you make a good point i don't even know what the
point i'm making i'm just saying things that i know but i mean there there is a line you know
and i think there's there's an obvious difference between uh you have a full-fledged character yeah
and then they're killed and we the audience feel something and the character feels something yeah
as opposed to just here's a sketch of a character and now they're dead and now you have a mission in life.
And they're going to clean your fridge.
Boy, that's it, isn't it?
I'm sure there have been
heaps of other Green Lanterns.
Everybody's been a Green Lantern
at some point.
Certainly.
Batman's had a Green Lantern ring
at some point.
Superman's been a Yellow Lantern
in Justice.
That's right.
That's pretty good.
Lex Luthor's been an Orange Lantern briefly. Nice. That's very good. Lex Luthor's been an orange lantern, briefly.
Nice.
It's very good.
Do you like all the different colours or do you like give it a rest, mate?
I'm not really sold on it.
It's too much.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it's like it's the emotional spectrum, except for green, which is willpower.
It's not really an emotion.
And black, which is death.
That famous emotion of death.
Yeah, I know the emotion of death.
It's pretty bloody good.
Do I like it?
We've got Jessica Cruz.
We've got...
What else have we got?
I don't know.
There's a whole lot.
I've just got the Wikipedia here.
I'm not going to go through them.
People can go and...
We've got Flodospan.
I don't know that one.
Flodospan.
I don't know that one.
What does he look like?
I don't know.
I've never encountered him before.
Good stuff. Well, I had a backup question just in case. Okay, let's hear this bloody backup question. I don't know that one what does he look like I don't know I've never encountered him before good stuff
well I had a backup question
just in case
okay let's hear this
bloody backup question
since I named all the
green lands of earth
Flodosplan
is like
is a goop monster
with an eye
from earth
no
well see there you go
it's kind of
yeah I can't
I don't
I like the idea that
the green lands weren't the power wasn't green I like the idea that the Greenlands weren't...
The power wasn't green because of...
It was part of the spectrum.
It was just green because...
That's the colour it was.
It was a good colour.
And the Yellow Lanterns...
The Sinestro Corps had yellow rings because that's Greenlands vulnerability.
Yeah.
You don't have to build the whole...
Some of them are vulnerable.
Some of them are interesting, though.
No, no.
Like the Orange Lantern lantern there's just one guy
because the orange lantern
is powered by greed
okay
and so the one guy's like
why would I give this up
like why would I share this
with anyone
yeah
it's a good point
so it's just
it's just me
it's pretty good
alright
that question was
this is from Isaac
Van Soest
ooh
at mega underscore
soasty what do you guys think about
the idea of Vincent D'Onofrio, Kingpin
playing Alma Fudd
in a live action Bugs Bunny movie?
Pretty good
I say. Who's going to play Bugs Bunny?
Andy Serkis?
No, Billy West man.
Mocap. Mocap Billy West. Interesting.
Would you have to mocap Bugs Bunny? You couldn't have a person playing him. I would you have to mocap bugs bunny you couldn't
have a person playing i think you have to if we're doing live action i think it has to be a live
action nightmare bugs bunny steve buscemi or yeah okay some sort of weird lanky man yeah right just
a terrifying lanky man steven merchant The bunny from Donnie Darko.
He's weird and creepy.
He's weird and creepy. What's his face?
Crispin Glover.
Yeah, he's too old though. That's true.
But Bunny's also affable.
Yeah, that's true. He can't be like... No, I want
this. This is a gritty reboot. Okay, fair enough.
If we're getting D'Onofrio as Alma Fudd,
this is a gritty reboot. I think if you honestly did do itOnofrio as Alma Fudd yeah yeah this is a gritty reboot
I think if you honestly
did do it
you could do a live action
Alma Fudd
but you'd do it like
Yogi Bear
the movie where
the rabbit is a CGI
but realistically
yeah
if you had to
if you had to do it Mason
but I'd rather see
yeah
whatever you said
Crispin Glover
or Corey Feldman
or someone
yeah nice
alright that's the show
isn't it
yeah we did it
listen everybody just this is it these are the things what does that mean I don't know Lubber or Corey Feldman or someone. Yeah, nice. All right, that's the show, isn't it? Yeah, we did it.
Listen, everybody, this is it.
These are the things you can- What's that mean?
I don't know.
These are the things you can find us at.
Oh, we're on Weekly Planet Pod on Twitter and Facebook and Gmail and Bandcamp.
Yep.
What's the way we do audio conferences?
What are we going to do next?
I guess we could either do Ghostbusters, but we might not get it out in time.
Yeah.
Or we can do Star Trek.
We can do one of them.
I'm free Thursday.
Okay.
During the day.
We can do it then, maybe.
Cool.
All right.
All right.
Cool.
Good stuff.
Oh, patreon.com slash midsundaymovies

Buy what you're going to buy on Amazon anyway.
Somehow we get a kickback from that.
It's the same price.
We don't know how it works.
We're probably going to get a bill from them.
Probably.
It's going to be great.
I'm at Wikipedia Brown on Twitter.
I'm at MrSundayMovies.
There's a new Weekly Planet comic which is up on the Reddit,
which stars the one and only Nick Mason, the drummer.
Good.
Finally, some recognition.
I love it.
He promised a Nick Mason story, but he bloody got one.
That's right.
At the Weekly Planet on Twitter is our friend Robert Collins.
Yes, yes.
Thank you to the Bruton and Baskalisk and Rackham for our themes.
Yep.
That's everything.
T-shirts, Golden Legend and Fugle Quigley on Redbubble.
That's, yep, that's one of those.
That's that.
That's that, I think.
You've done it.
Good stuff.
Next week, Star Wars and Ghostbusters reboot.
Ho, ho.
Should be very interesting.
Looking forward to both of those things.
Me too.
For better or worse.
Mm-hmm.
All right.
Thanks, everybody.
