Nice.
Red hot comic book movie news. Shooting up your butt hole. episode is brought to you by ExpressVPN. Nice. Welcome back everybody to another episode
of the Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is James,
also known as Mr. Sunday. With me as always is my co-host Nick Mason. It's good to be
here. It's good to be here. What do you think about that?
No guests.
Oh, yeah, I know.
Finally.
Yuck.
Because I feel the listeners are the true guests, you know what I mean?
What does that mean?
They're the guests.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
That's why we leave all these awkward pauses in.
It's so the guests, the listeners can add their own zingers.
Mostly just yell at us, right?
Yeah, yeah.
For sure.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Absolutely.
Add their own zingers, correct our very, very obvious factual mistakes.
You can also tweet our factual mistakes out as well.
That's absolutely fine.
We like that.
We love it.
Big week this week, Mason, because we finally saw the movie Tenant.
That's right, yeah.
You can skip to the time codes because there's time codes every week.
We're also going to talk about WandaVision, Scorpion King,
something about a franchise that's coming back you're going to love.
I won't spoil it here.
Oh, my God.
And maybe we'll talk about a little video game called Spider-Man,
more or less.
That's right.
I'm saying that right, aren't I?
That's exactly how you say it.
If I'm not, let's leave a little space for the listeners to add their own singer.
Absolutely.
There's also like some Justice League news, some Star Wars news,
some Wonder Woman news.
There's just news in general.
There's one more bit of news I just want to pop in about Chadwick Boseman and Black Panther
2.
So if you don't mind, I meant to copy this over.
Please.
And I didn't.
And I don't know who to blame for this.
Well, who's not in the room currently?
The dog's here.
We could have pinned it on the dog.
We could have pinned it on the dog, yeah.
Wait till she leaves.
The traditional blaming of the dog.
Exactly.
I don't think anything's your fault, dog.
No, you're all right.
You're good.
For a dog and just like a-
For all these scrapes on my pants.
You've seen my pants, Jack?
Those are your work pants, Mason.
What are you going to do?
You're going to get fired.
No, I'll just wipe them.
They'll be fine.
I don't know.
I don't know about that.
You know, I haven't ironed a shirt in like four years.
It's great.
I love it.
I mean, they all look like shit.
But I don't have to be anywhere or do anything.
It's true.
So I've still got all my teaching shirts and I'm like,
I should just get rid of these.
Like my license has expired.
Right.
I'm like, I can't go back now anyway because my face is out there.
The scandals.
Scandals.
People will make fun of me for being a nerd.
Can't do it.
That's right.
The children will tear right through me.
By your teaching shirts, you mean like your T-shirts and they say like,
I love to teach.
That's right. And then you turn around say, like, I love to teach. That's right.
And then you turn around and it says, just call me teach.
That's right.
You've seen all my shirts.
I've seen all your shirts.
Yeah, great.
Okay, let's get into it.
Again, time codes if you want.
Give me an apple because I'm the teacher.
I won't eat it.
Never eat anything that a child hands you.
Absolutely not.
I've probably got snot on it.
It's definitely got snot on it.
WandaVision has got a release date.
It's going to be next year.
It's going to be the January 15th.
That's not so far away.
That's planned.
That's my normal break time from doing all this shit.
And from school.
And from school.
School to school.
Because I take the month of January to iron on my teaching shirts.
That's right.
Yeah.
Also, they're-
One plus one equals fun.
That's what the shirt says. Brackets teaching. Teaching's right. Also, they... One plus one equals fun, the shirt says.
Brackets
teaching! Teaching, yeah.
But the
first episode was also filmed in front of a studio audience
because we know they're doing different...
I think they used specific lighting and
lenses
from the era as well to get that authentic
kind of look. I hope they got
an authentic 1950s audience
who would just be like, boom, I like this.
This isn't I Love Lucy.
I was going to say The Sullivans.
Was that the 50s?
I don't know.
I couldn't tell you.
I don't know.
There's two shows that I know.
There's I Love Lucy and that one where that guy's just
threatening to hit his wife.
Yeah, that's The Honeymooners.
The Honeymooners, that's the one.
Yeah, yeah.
There's a woman and a robot together.
We don't like it.
Boo.
Boo.
Apparently they side very intense clauses.
Oh, NDAs.
Locking it down.
And they're also a bunch of the staff dressed in the period appropriate clothing.
So just big woolen suits under a blindingly hot light.
Big billowy shirt, short sleeves, necktie.
That's right.
Glasses.
Probably a pen.
Probably a pen, yeah.
Jack a pen in there, mate, if you need to make a note.
Everybody dressed like they were a NASA.
Exactly, yeah.
So we also know it's going to be six episodes.
I didn't see anything specific, but I'd imagine it's week to week.
What do you think?
I hope it's week to week.
That's a Disney Plus situation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There was also an Entertainment Weekly cover where it's like Wanda
and the Vision and kind of like that cute sitcom couple photo,
which I thought was fun.
Like that show about that guy who wants to hit his wife.
The Honeymooners.
Yeah, exactly, yeah.
Was that guy's name?
Art something?
No, I don't think it is.
Yeah, but what if it was?
You're thinking of Art Garfunkel.
I am thinking of that.
Don't email in.
I don't care.
So good, I guess.
But is this good?
Answer me this.
I'm going to say it's probably good.
Okay.
Scorpion King's coming back.
Could be good.
Could be good.
I mean, the last one was bad.
Which one?
Weren't there five?
There were five Scorpion King movies or something.
People wanted us to cover them for Caravan of Garbage.
Look, we'll definitely do the Scorpion King at some point,
but I will smash my head into a rock.
The rock?
No.
Ah.
Yes.
It's still equally dangerous.
I agree.
But before I watch any of those,
I don't want to watch the one with Billy Zane
or any of the other ones that maybe also have Billy Zane in them.
Sure.
I don't know.
How many have Arnold of Oslo?
The titular mummy.
Did he step in?
Is he in any?
I don't know.
Let me check.
I couldn't tell you.
I bet he is.
I know he's in A Dark Man.
Oh, no, he wouldn't be in it because he's in the...
No, he doesn't.
Because he's the mummy.
He wouldn't be in Scorpion King.
Why am I looking this up?
I don't know why you're doing that.
I'm an idiot.
James, I don't know.
Anyway, this is from Deadline.
It says, Universal Pictures and Dwayne Johnson and Danny Garcia's
Seven Bucks Productions are looking to relaunch a Scorpion.
Seven Bucks Productions.
That's right.
With a new lead.
The Rock won't appear but also could possibly appear.
Nice.
That's where we're at at this point.
Schroding is The Rock.
That's right.
I think it would be nice to put him in as like a cameo
or maybe just put a big like a big crocodile head
and he's just like a big Egyptian god.
How about this?
How about this?
You put him in as like a framing story where he's like a real big nerd
and he's researching the Scorpion King in the modern day.
Oh, my God.
Big glasses held together with tape.
Yeah.
Big suit but it's still too small.
Do all the other scientists in the office make fun of him?
Yes.
Yeah, cool.
And he's doing that.
He's on that ladder that goes around the library.
You know one of those?
He's nearly fallen off the library.
He's too big for it.
Maybe he's breaking some bones.
It's weird.
Yeah, it's way weird.
I don't even know where it is.
I look at him.
I don't know where it is.
Is it in his head?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Yeah, so this is what Dwayne the Rock Johnson said.
He said,
The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen.
I'm honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology
to a whole new generation.
I wouldn't have had a career that I'm lucky enough to have
had it not been for the Scorpion King.
He's good in that mummy movie.
I mean, he's not in it much, and then at the end he's a big CGI scorpion.
Yeah.
But, yeah, it's a pretty decent performance,
and he speaks another language and he eats a mushy scorpion in it.
He does too.
That's right.
But I don't think I've ever seen the actual movie,
like the first one that he's in.
Oh, right.
Have you?
I can't remember.
Yeah.
I know there's a bit where they're buried up to their necks
and he's like, we're in trouble now or whatever.
Okay, sure.
But he probably gets out of it, I imagine.
Unless he dies and that's why he's not in the follow-up movies.
I wonder whether they'll get like an up-and-coming wrestler
or they'll get a relatively unknown person and hope to build their career
as this new action star.
I wonder if they'll go in that direction.
What do you think?
Maybe they'll get a wrestler on their way out, you know,
just saying controversial statements.
Absolutely.
Are you talking about like a Hulk Hogan?
Yeah, maybe.
Did you see that Chris Hemsworth is going to be Hulk Hogan in a Hulk Hogan movie?
I didn't see that, but that's fun. Big moustache, no doubt. Big pants. Shade the top of, maybe. Sure. Did you see that Chris Hemsworth is going to be Hulk Hogan in a Hulk Hogan movie? I didn't see that, but that's fun.
Big moustache, no doubt.
Big pants.
Shade at the top of his head.
Yep.
Just the long bits at the back.
Love it.
I love it.
Yeah.
All right.
Deadline are also reporting that, I'm going to say some things and you've got to guess
what this franchise is.
Okay.
The lead in it, not the actor, but the character's name is Mike Banning.
Mike Banning?
Mike Banning.
What's he up to?
What's he the kind of man?
What kind of man would Mike Banning be?
Is it a franchise?
Yes.
Race car driver.
This is the fourth one.
This will be the fourth one.
Oh, so it's already out.
There's been three.
There's been three.
There was one this year or maybe it would have been the last.
No, it wouldn't have been because there's nothing this year.
So late last year probably.
Is he a wizard?
He's not a wizard.
Is he a journalist?
No.
He could be a journalist.
I'll give you a clue.
He's out there protecting.
That's what he's up to.
Oh.
Police cop?
No.
Okay, I'll give you another clue.
Is he a goalie?
He's not a goalie.
Sometimes he's with Aaron Eckhart.
That doesn't help me at all.
Okay.
I'll give you another clue.
Okay.
He's always trying to protect the president.
Oh, it's something is fallen.
Yeah.
Okay.
Fallen.
Yeah, that's right.
So we had Angel has Fallen was the first one.
No, it was Olympus has Fallen.
Olympus has Fallen, Angel has Fallen, London has Fallen.
Well, they probably did London Bridge is Falling Down but Sad in the trailer. But it was Fergie still. Yeah. But it was Olympus Has Fallen. Olympus Has Fallen, Angels Fallen, London Has Fallen. Well, they probably did London Bridges Falling Down But Sad in the trailer.
But it was Fergie still.
Yeah, it's Fergie.
And this one is going to be called Night Has Fallen.
Great.
So does that mean they're getting rid of the night
or they're getting rid of the day so it's only the night?
Oh.
You think they're going to blow up?
They're going to blow up the night?
Yes.
Terrorists have blown up night.
It's only daytime forever.
You always have to be at work.
Oh, no.
Boo.
Can't I just put the curtains down?
No.
They took all the curtains too.
Ah, boo.
What about if I, Jerry Butler, suggest that?
Good idea, actually.
Good idea, Mike Banning.
He doesn't seem like a Mike Banning.
Well, that's his name.
That's a fake American name, isn't it?
I was going to say he seems more like a Jerry Butler. Well, that's his name. That's a fake American name, isn't it? I was going to say he seems more like a Jerry Butler.
Oh, that's his name.
Okay.
As someone who has seen maybe the first one, good, man.
They're like mid-budget action movies.
People enjoy them.
Why not?
Why not?
Are they bad?
I don't know.
Are they?
Are they?
I don't know.
See, that's the thing.
Yeah.
The last one, they had drones and he had to go rogue and all the drones tried to kill
the president. And they're like, this is your fault, Mike Bannon. And he's like, it's the thing. Yeah. The last one, they had drones and he had to go rogue and all the drones tried to kill the president.
And they're like, this is your fault, Mike Banning.
And he's like, it's fucking never my fault.
Right?
It's literally never my fault.
Every other time it's not been my fault.
Except for the time that maybe the president's wife died
and I was involved in that somehow.
Do you remember that?
He shot her in the head.
Yeah, he shot her in the head.
He shouldn't have done it.
It's a Mike Banning move probably.
That's right.
Here we go.
We've got some bloody casting.
The marvellous Mike Banning.
He's going to try his hand at stand-up.
He'd be good, wouldn't he?
I think so.
You know when you're protecting the president but his wife dies?
Boo!
Boo!
So Deadliner reporting.
Go back to your day job, protecting the president.
Fantastic piece.
We heard last week that Johnny Depp was, well, he exited the role.
It seems as if that he was asked and then, well, no, he said that.
He was asked to leave and he stepped down.
But we got off the back of that a couple of things.
First of all, there was a pay or play clause in his contract.
So he gets paid regardless.
He filmed one scene and he gets, they reckon it's about $10 million.
So why not?
It's pretty good.
It's not a good franchise.
So he doesn't have to be in it and he gets money.
So they also moved the release date to next year, July.
No, sorry, the year after.
I don't know when it is, but this will be out in July of 2020.
As in now I don't know when it is, July of 2022.
What we should do is we should have a little clip.
Yeah.
Where whenever anything gets delayed, we say,
it's been delayed to the future.
And then they put some reverb on it.
They, I mean you.
Collings.
And we just Collings.
We just play it.
And then every time.
And then we don't have to think about when it's coming out.
It's actually really good.
It's out when it's out.
Yeah.
Do you want to do that now?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Go.
The future.
That's going to sound so great.
That's going to sound great.
Yeah.
So also David Yates, who's directing,
who directed some of the Harry Potter movies,
maybe six of the ten.
How many are there?
It's not important.
But what is important is that Mads Mikkelsen is his first choice
to replace as Grindelwald.
That's pretty cool.
That's a good choice, man.
Apparently Colin Farrell's busy doing the Batman or whatever
and maybe he's fat for that and he can't do it.
I don't know.
Maybe it's all prosthetics.
I don't know how he's doing it.
That's right.
But he can't do it.
So I think Mads Mikkelsen would have been a good choice like up top.
Yeah.
Because I didn't really like Johnny Depp in these.
Oh, maybe I didn't mind him that much in the last one.
Anyway, I don't like these movies, and that's the point.
That is largely the point.
I saw a trailer recently for a Mads Mikkelsen movie
where it's just him and a bunch of middle-aged men
and they decide to get drunk every day.
That sounds awesome.
I think maybe it's not a comedy.
Maybe it's a dramedy, but it's about they discover that the,
they discover that, you know, how like, you know, it's okay,
you have a glass of wine a day and that's good for you or something like that.
They all decide to see what life would be like if they're just drunk all the time.
And again, I don't know if it's comedy.
It's hard to say.
It's not in English.
Ah, boo.
I can't do it then.
I think that would be bad.
That's just alcoholism.
I think it is, yeah.
But doesn't it get to a point where you can just function?
I guess we'd have to watch the movie to find out.
That's how Mads Mikkelsen has gotten us.
Yeah, well, he hasn't gotten me.
I'm not going to see that or the Fantastic. I'll see Fantastic.
Is there an Eric Banner movie coming out recently?
Yeah, I did see that trailer and he was...
It's a detective or it's a cop drama or something.
Let me check.
He's like, I'm in a small town.
I drive a Tirana.
I just had to remove Arnold Boslew from the...
From the search bar....sort of trailer. The Dry. Okay. Yeah, it's a... town. I drive a Tirana. I just had to remove Arnold Bosley from the – From the search bar.
The dry.
Okay.
Yeah.
I look pretty good.
I agree.
I like Eric Banner.
It's nice when Australia produces anything.
Yeah.
You know?
Like the Auntie Donna podcast, well, podcast, but Netflix series,
which people have been watching and loving it turns out.
That's right, yeah.
It's getting up there on the charts on Netflix.
It's like look at how many people are watching this.
How many people do you think?
I mean we talked about it heaps probably? We talked about it at length last week,
so we probably won't bring it up again, but I did watch it for,
I was going to say for the podcast.
I watch it because I like them and I like supporting them
and we're friends.
But I enjoyed, one of my favourite things that I enjoyed about it
is they put in a bunch of Australian references
they didn't localise for America.
Car City Ringwood.
Grant Denyer.
Yeah, Grant Denyer.
Aquila Shoes.
Yeah.
There's a mention of Bovril and people are saying, was that in relation to us? for America. Car City Ringwood. Grant Denyer. Yeah, Grant Denyer. Aquila Shoes. Yeah.
There's a mention of Bovril and people are saying, was that in relation to us?
I don't think so.
We are not involved.
Just to clarify.
That's right. But if people want to know how that show came together, there's a video which Collings has
edited.
It's out by now.
It's where Mark and Broden basically talk me through how they got the show and how they
started.
And so if you want to know how to pitch things at Netflix,
this is their way of doing it.
Do exactly what they did.
Call yourselves Auntie Donna, be a sketch group for 9, 10, 11.
Be friends for a long time.
Yep, yep.
You had a member but he left but then you decided to double down
and really make a go of it.
That's right.
There you go.
You made it.
Yeah.
That's good.
It's really interesting.
Here we go.
Another sequel that you're going to love. Okay, I'm ready. Yeah. That's good. It's really interesting. Here we go. Another sequel that you're going to love.
Okay, I'm ready.
This is via superhero hype.
Vin Diesel is back.
The Pacifier 2?
No.
I think there is a Pacifier 2.
What about Vin Diesel and The Rock team up and they're both?
No, they can't.
They can't be in the same room.
They don't have to be in the same room.
We'll fix it with trickery.
Okay.
But they're both the character when, you know how like a big muscle man has to do a show where they're like, I'm protecting a kid
or I've got to raise these kids, but I'm big.
Look at me, I'm wearing a papoose.
I've only ever carried grenade launchers.
I've never carried a baby.
That's right.
This baby's a poo launcher, you know what I mean?
Grenade's a poop.
You know, he's got like the gun belt or the bullet,
whatever it's called, the bullet belt, but it's all bottles.
You know what I mean? It's all baby's bottles. Anyway, those two characters should team up. That's too many milks. And also, if you're going bullet. Whatever it's called, the bullet belt, but it's all bottles. You know what I mean?
It's all baby's bottles.
Anyway, those two characters should team up.
That's too many milks.
And also, if you're going to be making baby's milk,
it needs to be fresh or you need to keep it refrigerated.
You can't just strap it to your body and run around town.
That's right.
Also, 12 is too many.
You don't need that.
Also, if you're running around with a baby,
you should probably support his head.
Exactly.
Don't hold it by the neck.
Don't swing it like nunchuckers.
You'll hurt the baby.
I mean, you'll hurt the ninjas that are coming after you,
but you'll hurt the baby also.
The baby will be unsettled.
No, it's not that.
What is it?
It's Bloodshot 2.
Yes.
Yes.
I like Bloodshot.
It's all right.
You just don't know.
No, I don't know.
It's true.
But even though it underperformed at the box office,
it did come out, and we did an episode on the cusp of everything going
and shut down.
Yeah, yeah.
Before this week, it was the last movie that I saw in cinemas.
Yeah.
So it went off a cliff in terms of revenue.
And also I want to see at the very least a sequel
and maybe one that does better because I want to see more Valiant
comics properties.
Yes.
I want to see more stuff.
Yeah, there were elements of that movie that I definitely liked,
including that they kept wiping his memory and he's like,
are spoilers for Bloodshot?
The movie that came out.
You've probably seen it because it got a very good home release
and that's why it's making another one.
So why not?
Why bloody not?
And there was a moment briefly where he turned grey.
Do you remember?
Like the comic books.
And his chest was all glowing.
Bloodshot, yeah.
Bloodshot, that's right.
So there you go.
I'll watch another one of those.
But I like mid-tier, like, I like the idea of mid-tier action movies.
Yeah, for sure.
No, it's cool.
Why don't you spend too much money on Bloodshot?
And if this is successful, maybe we get a Turok.
Is that a sequel to Bloodshot?
No, but it's valiant.
But Turok's in the past.
He's fighting dinosaurs.
No, he's in the present.
And what are the dinosaurs doing there?
They're dinosaurs.
They're from another dimension.
Oh.
Yeah. So where's he from? Earth. Is he are the dinosaurs doing there? They're dinosaurs. They're from another dimension. Oh. Yeah.
So where's he from?
Earth.
Is he from the modern day?
Yeah.
But he has ancestors who are from the past.
Yeah, okay.
So maybe you're thinking about them.
I don't.
I'm not.
But listen, THR reported that Chris Pratt, he's boarding New Thor.
Oh, yeah.
Right. So he'll be, I don't know whether it's going to pick up directly after Endgame and then
the ship together or there'll be a time.
They normally, not strictly, but they normally take place
roughly the time that has passed.
Yeah, that's true.
Not always there are exceptions.
I know because like Ant-Man 2 is set before Infinity War
and there are bits and pieces.
But yeah, do you think they're going to be doing some adventures
in the galaxy?
And then he's like, Thor's like, I've got things, I'm leaving now.
That's right.
Well, I mean, also that's a good odd couple.
I think we were talking some weeks ago about, remember, Tango and Cash, etc.
I love Tango and Cash.
This could be a new Tango and Cash.
Do I love Tango and Cash, though?
Yeah, you do.
Okay, you might be right.
Speaking of Tango and Cash, Stallone is in the new Suicide Squad.
Is he?
That just came up.
Yeah, it's brand new hot news.
James Gunn, the role is unknown, but James Gunn said,
what's not really known about Stallone is he's actually
a really good actor also, which I agree.
He is a good actor. Yeah, but when he's got a role
that he cares about, which isn't all the time.
You know what I don't know. But to be fair,
he's pretty choosy with what he does.
He's not like Bruce Willis. He doesn't do anything.
I feel like when he does something, he's
committed to whatever that, even if it's Expendables,
which I do not like. He's
doing it. You know what I mean?
It's true, yeah.
He's all in.
Is he going to go T?
Probably.
Or it's a Rambo, Mortal Kombat 11.
He's all in, mate.
You know what I did watch the other day?
I watched Creed 2.
Yes.
It's a fucking great movie, man.
Creed 2 is a good movie, and he's good in that.
I wish they took out the Drago-Rocky-Foyer fight.
The scuffle, yeah.
Which I think I would have enjoyed, but there you go.
Would have stolen focus, I think.
Yeah, I think so, yeah.
But I'd like to see that deleted scene, though,
if they could release it.
The animatic.
Yes.
Just two 8-bit cartoons, Rocky and Drago punching on.
Did you see Michael B. Jordan?
Did we talk about this?
He might be doing Creed 3, might be directing it.
Yeah, 3-ed.
3-ed.
Did we talk about that?
Yeah, we did.
It's going to be in 3-ed. That's. He might be directing it. Yeah, Threed. Threed. Did we talk about that? Yeah, we did. It's going to be in 3D.
That's right.
There's a poster.
Yeah, yeah, cool.
So this is good and sad.
So there was a rumor that they were going to replace Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther 2 with a digital double.
Oh, okay.
And people are like, well, that's how dare, why would you?
They're not.
So Executive Vice President of Marvel Studios, Victoria Alonso, she said, no, there's only one
Chadwick and he's not with us. Our king unfortunately
has died in real life, not just in fiction.
We're taking a little time to see how we return
to the story and what we do to honour this chapter
of what has happened to us
that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible
really. So yeah, I think that's good.
There's also, it'd be different if he
was halfway through filming. Yeah, for
sure. You know, but they'd have to create an entire movie around, he's the lead.
Yeah, for sure.
So even with like Fast and Furious with Paul Walker, he'd shot some of it and he's not the only person in that.
That's true.
You know what I'm talking about though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's pretty pivotal when the movie is named after you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So yeah, they're still obviously working it out.
It'd be so hard for anybody to just step into it.
Yeah, for sure.
You know what I mean?
So I don't, there's no, there's not an answer to this.
There's no one person or one piece of casting
or one person who exists in the universe that could step in
that could kind of do it justice.
Beat T'Challa again.
Yeah, I just don't, I don't know.
So anyway.
THR are reporting that John M. Chu is in talks to direct Lilo and Stitch.
The live action Lilo and Stitch?
Presumably.
I don't care.
Did you see it?
Watched it recently.
No, I haven't seen it.
It's all right.
Claire hated it.
Who's John M. Chu?
He did Crazy Rich Asians.
Oh.
Yeah, I like him.
I think he's done some of the G.I.
Joes maybe.
I might be wrong.
Maybe the second.
Oh, he did.
Yeah, I think maybe he did.
He did the second one.
Yep.
Bruce Willis.
That's right.
He did Now To See Me.
He's like, I'm G.I. Joe.
I'm the original G.I. Joe.
Look at me, I'm Schoeniger.
See that?
See that back of my head?
That's not me.
No, it's never him, is it?
Yeah.
He's also done In The Heights, which is the Lin-Manuel Miranda,
the other musical that he did.
I think it was supposed to come out this year,
but it's now been pushed back.
So, yeah, more Disney live-action remakes, Mason says.
Hooray.
No, I don't say that.
You've always said that.
No, never said it.
Don't want them.
Don't want them.
Do you remember a few weeks back we talked?
I mean Treasure Planet.
Have you watched Treasure Planet yet?
Nope.
You said you'd watch it.
You said you'd watch it, Mason.
It's a good movie.
I'll watch it this week.
No, you won't.
I might.
I'll watch it with my son.
He's bloody loved it, mate.
He's like, I'm loving this Treasure Planet.
Yeah, so that's cool.
All right.
I told you.
Well, I was there too, James.
And?
Pretty good.
It's pretty good.
So remember there was a series that had been described as a female-led Star Wars series
coming to Disney Plus with Leslie Keplund who did Russian Doll.
She talked a little bit about it in the vaguest sense
because you can never say anything about these things.
I would like to say it's a pocket of the universe
and a pocket of the timeline that we don't know much about.
And I'm combing through it.
But let's just say Natasha Lyon is at a party and time keeps resetting.
I'd watch that in Star Wars, but it's Star Wars time.
I'm actually kind of combing through it geographically and going on a literal journey.
So what we're pitching as a designer create an Indiana Jones style.
We go here and we go there with a little dotted red line in our journey.
That's where we're going.
Is it Dr. Aphra?
That's what I was going to say.
Is it Dr. Aphra?
So there's other options.
You could do Bo-Katan. You could do a new character. You could do Ah was going to say. He's a Dr. Aphra. So there's other options.
You could do Bo-Katan.
You could do a new character.
You could do Ahsoka.
You could do a new character.
But I think Dr. Aphra is like an Indiana Jones-esque adventurer.
So that's where my mind immediately kind of went from that. Yeah, she's a mix of like Indiana Jones, Han Solo.
Yeah.
But a lady.
So just Harrison Ford.
Yeah, Harrison Ford.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So I would love to see a Dr. Aphra Harrison Ford. Yeah, Harrison Ford. Yeah, I get you. So I would love to see
a Doctor Aphra stealing artifacts and
yes, you know, just doing the
Star-Lord thing or whatever. Yeah, for sure.
So there you go. Did you hear the other sequel
trilogy news that came out this week
for George Lucas' sequel trilogy?
No. This is what he originally planned
and this was mapped out in
as he was doing the prequels, I think he had these
ideas, but Darth Maul is going to, he's lived by the way, was going to train a girl and this was mapped out in – as he was doing the prequels, I think he had these ideas.
But Darth Maul was going to – is lived, by the way – was going to train a girl called Darth Talon who was in the comic books
as his apprentice, and she was the new Darth Vader,
and most of the action was with her.
Okay.
So these are the two main villains of the trilogy,
and Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe
as the Empire falls.
He takes over, and by the end of the trilogy,
Luke would have rebuilt much of the Jedi Order,
would have had the renewal of the New Republic,
and Leia would have become Supreme Chancellor in charge of everything.
And she ended up also being the Chosen One.
So that was a lot of those ideas got folded into Clone Wars, like Darth Maul returning and running the underworld.
That was done in Clone Wars.
Being real sassy.
Yeah, being real sassy, a little bit of Rebels.
What I do like about this, as opposed to the sequel trilogy,
is they didn't just go, the Empire's back and we're a rebellion.
It's an evolution.
The new threat is the underworld and that's now the villains in the galaxy.
I think that's cool.
Which makes a lot of sense because if the Empire was destroyed,
all the equipment goes, where does that end up?
Where do all the soldiers go, the troopers?
They would go to crime.
That's right.
They take their Stormtrooper helmets and they put a big spiky mohawk on it.
Yeah, nice, nice.
That's what they're about.
Put some Chuck Taylors on.
Yeah, and they're out in the world.
Yeah.
So I like that idea.
I don't know whether he could have executed it well,
but it's kind of a shame that, I don't know,
we always, I mean, again, I like some of the sequel trilogy,
but one of the ideas in it is just like then the Death Star's back
and there's a new everything.
Yeah, yeah.
It's like, okay.
What is the new trilogy like about?
Because you know how like the original trilogy is about the Vietnam War?
Yes.
And the prequel trilogy is sort of about, what's it sort of about?
Trade routes.
Yeah, it's sort of about trade, but it's also about, it's sort of about the George Bush
era of politics.
Sure, right.
In particular, the third one.
Well, the sequel trilogy is about fond reminiscences about the Vietnam War.
Oh.
And just doing that again.
Doing that again.
Yeah.
Great.
And the villain from the Vietnam.
Going on a Contiki tour to the Vietnam War.
But the villain from the Vietnam War is back also. That's right, the Vietnam War. But the villain from the Vietnam War is back also.
That's right, yeah.
Because he got into another body.
Yeah.
Yeah, cool.
Anyway, I just thought, do you know what I mean?
Yeah.
I mean, to be fair, like the prequel trilogy only towards the end went,
actually this is about the George Bush era of politics,
which also didn't start until like during those movies actually coming out.
But I don't know.
Look, I think the issue with the sequel trilogy
is that they didn't have a unified idea of what it was about.
I mean, individual movies like, you know, The Last Jedi,
it's like, well, it's about letting go of the past.
But the other two aren't about that, surely.
No, they're not.
But, you know, if they'd have nailed it,
people would have been like,
they didn't even have a plan and they nailed it.
That's right.
Yeah.
But they didn't have a plan and they didn't nail it.
Well, you know.
Then what do you do?
Just keep making Star Wars movies again.
Never stop.
Never stop.
Justice League has apparently, Zack Snyder's,
so there's going to be a trailer on the 17th,
but it's mostly the old trailer.
Of December?
No, sorry, this month.
So on Tuesday.
Oh.
But he said they've only shot like four minutes of footage,
extra footage.
Okay.
So it's four hours long.
Yep.
And it's four minutes of reshoots, which it's not very much, is it?
No, it's not.
But again, there is that four hours you mentioned.
Yeah, so he's got obviously quite a lot in the can.
So does it feel like then they're just using literally everything?
They're not cutting anything out of this?
Sure seems that way.
It's like every single scene we're putting in.
God, I cannot wait for this to come out.
I don't know how that's going to play.
They reckon mid next year, maybe after.
Who knows?
So I guess all the money is mostly going into special effects
and bits and bobs.
Nice.
There you go.
We'll see how that turns out.
Yeah.
I don't know about this, Mason.
Can't wait for people to stop talking about it.
No, no, they won't because then this will be the unit
because he's also talked about what he'd do in the follow-up.
So I think people will then demand.
Make Justice League 2 four parts.
It's an eight-part saga, Mason.
I love a saga.
I think you'll have an eight-part saga.
Variety reporting.
Delays but don't dismay.
Not yet, at least.
The future.
Because, yeah.
Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman 84.
Warner Brothers are weighing up a couple of options of how they're going to release it.
At the moment it's out on Christmas Day.
Australia we call Christmas Day Boxing Day
because that's the day that they release movies in Australia,
don't they, around Christmas.
Why are you saying these things?
I don't know what I'm doing.
What are you doing?
We don't release movies on Christmas.
We release Boxing Day. That's generally the rule, isn't it. What are you doing? We don't release them on movies on Christmas. We release Boxing Day.
That's generally the rule, isn't it?
What are you seeing on Christmas?
I feel I've seen, I haven't seen any movies on Christmas Day,
but I feel like they have released movies on Christmas Day.
Okay, because all those Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies came out.
That's Boxing Day, yeah.
Boxing Day, but anyway.
So Warner Brothers are weighing up whether to push it to June
or release it on Christmas or, as we know in Australia, Boxing Day.
Stop saying that.
And then put it on HBO Max early January.
What do you think of that?
I want that one.
I want them to do that because cinemas are open here now.
So what are we doing?
What's your option, your preferred option?
Delay to June or release it on 25th of December or Boxing Day as Australia.
And then HBO Max early Jan.
Okay.
Yeah, that works.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The one that's early for us.
Yeah.
But does that work though?
I think so.
Why wouldn't it?
I don't know.
Like monetarily.
Oh, yeah.
Well, that's not my concern, is it?
No.
You roll the dice on, do you get the vaccine out there?
Do you squash the virus before June?
And then also theaters chains are still alive and people are also going.
Yeah.
Or the other thing.
Yeah, good point. And, again, is it response?
Again, for like Melbourne now, it's somewhat,
it's a fairly safe bet if you want to go to the movies.
But for a lot of places it is not.
So maybe that's a, and just attempting to lure people in when it's not safe
to go out is probably a bad move.
Like a movie we're going to talk about today?
We weren't lured out.
I mean, they were in other places in the world.
I mean, most of the world, Christopher Nolan is personally responsible
for luring people out.
Yes, that is true in a lot of ways.
Yeah, so you reckon December would be where it's at?
I think they should just do a home release.
Yeah.
I think, but coupling it with this, you'd make more money
than doing just a home release.
Yeah.
Did you say they had something like 73 million Disney Plus subscribers?
Those are the numbers that were released this week.
I think it's now second in the streaming services.
That's pretty crazy.
It's not bad.
It's not bad at all, is it?
It's not bad given they are a huge media juggernaut.
How did they do it, do you think?
That's probably all their money.
What are you up to on Mandalorian?
I'm like one behind, I think.
Okay.
Great.
Very good.
Very good.
On May 10th, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
is coming to IMAX and theatres everywhere.
What a wonderful day!
This summer, one movie event will reign.
It is our time.
Apes hunt humans.
That is wrong.
Bend for your king.
Never.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Only in theaters May 10th.
Tickets on sale now.
Only in theatres May 10.
Tickets on sale now.
Okay, so it's November.
That is correct.
Currently it was March and then there was a brief pause and now it's November, yes.
Correct.
Which means we can officially start watching Christmas movies, Mason.
Yes.
I know.
I love Christmas movies, Christmas episodes.
But you might be like, I go to Netflix and my favourite Christmas movie isn't available for Christmas time.
What, is it available in a foreign country?
Funny you should say that, Mason.
No.
But yes, I'm kidding, it is.
Because get ready to have your mind blown.
You can use ExpressVPN to watch any Netflix library in the world.
So this weekend I'm actually going to use ExpressVPN to show my son the Christmas classic Elf.
Elf.
The alien life form.
No.
Elf.
Oh, Elf.
Right.
Yep.
Sure, sure, sure.
Yeah, but if you're somewhere else in the world and you're like, we don't have Elf
on my Netflix, we can use ExpressVPN to switch to Australia and then you can watch Elf.
That's right.
With Will Ferrell, directed by Jon Favreau.
So there you go.
About that alien from Melmac.
That's right.
But you've also got other movies.
You could do The Gremlins.
It's just Gremlins.
Sure.
If you switch to France.
You could do a Doctor Who A Christmas Carol episode with Matt Smith.
You could do that.
There's a lot of things that you can bloody check out, mate.
It's so simple.
You just open the app, pick a country, and have a bit of a bloody poke around, mate.
That's right.
And change your location.
Refresh Netflix.
That's all there is to it.
ExpressVPN lets you control where you want sites to think you are located,
so you can choose from almost 100 countries.
So just imagine all the Netflix libraries that you can explore.
Just imagine them.
Slovenia.
What kind of Christmas movies do they have?
Who knows?
Probably The Grinch. But the Slovenian Grinch. He imagine them. Slovenia. What kind of Christmas movies do they have? Who knows? Probably The Grinch.
But the Slovenian Grinch.
He's even worse?
Yep.
Okay.
And of course, it's not just Netflix.
Express VPN works on any streaming service.
Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, you name it, you can Express VPN it.
There are hundreds of VPNs out there,
but the reason that we use Express VPN to watch movies and shows
is because it's ridiculously fast.
There's never any buffering, and you can always stream in HD.
That's right.
Because we have pretty terrible internet as is.
Oh, my God, Australia's the worst.
You don't want to choke that anymore than it needs to be.
So, yeah.
ExpressVPN also works on all of your devices,
including phones, tablets, media consoles, and smart TVs,
and you can use it to watch whatever you want on the go
or on the big screen.
Call to action, Mason.
Yes, go on.
If you visit our special link right now, expressvpn.com
slash weeklyplanet, you can get an extra three months of ExpressVPN
for free, support the show, watch what you want,
and get your holiday fix at expressvpn.com slash weeklyplanet.
And Merry Christmas. And Merry Christmas.
And Merry Christmas.
It was March and now it's Christmas.
Are we at the show?
Yes.
Mason, Christopher Nolan.
Yeah, I've heard of him.
He's back in cinemas.
Yep.
I mean, he's already, this came out.
He's not personally back in cinemas.
He'd go to a cinema.
I don't think he would, I think.
He's seen Bloodshot.
He's keeping cinema alive.
Oh, he's, okay, great.
He's just seen Bloodshot over and over again, right.
Before we talk about the movie Tenet, which hopefully most people have seen,
but also maybe not because the box office numbers aren't great.
But don't stress because it's going to be out in digital
and whatever on December 15th.
But I saw an article this week where Nolan talks about the sound design.
I have this right here.
Here we go.
IndieWire?
Yeah.
Christopher Nolan says fellow directors have called to complain
about his inaudible sound.
Yep.
And largely this is referring to Interstellar.
Yes.
But Interstellar is just a beautiful soundscape.
You can hear Interstellar.
Yeah.
I didn't have a problem with any of the sound in Interstellar.
The sound design of Christopher Nolan's movies is known
to generate frustration among moviegoers,
but it turns out Nolan's fellow filmmakers have also expressed
annoyance with being unable to hear the director's dialogue.
Are Nolan movies too loud?
The director has defended his sound design in the past,
and he says in Tom Sean's new book, The Nolan Variations,
that he's surprised how conservative moviegoers are about cinematic sound.
We get a lot of complaints, Nolan said, about the interstellar sound design.
Actually, he got calls from other filmmakers, blah, blah, blah.
Your dialogue is inaudible.
That's one of the things they said, yeah.
He says it's a very, very radical mix.
Here's the thing, Christopher Nolan.
You know what all your characters are saying because you wrote the script.
Yeah.
So you can look at the screen and you were there.
Yeah.
As they did it multiple times.
You're in the editing booth as you watch that go through.
So you know. Yeah, but nobody else knows.
I watched this movie a day ahead of you and I said to you,
you might want to consider getting one of those closed captioning boxes or go to an open caption session so you can understand
what is happening in this movie.
I don't think it overall detracted from my confusion that stemmed from this movie, but
there were certainly scenes, including like the opening scene where everyone's wearing
masks and they're shouting orders at each other.
I'm like, I think this could be pivotal and I can't, I don't know what they're saying.
Look, we'll get to the rest of the movie, but just as a side note, there were scenes
where people were wearing gas masks, where they're wearing oxygen breathers, where people are talking through an inch of bulletproof glass.
They're backwards.
Yeah.
Minor spoiler.
There's people sitting on the deck of ships as, like, waves crash over them.
There's, like, they're not future boats, but they're on, like, a future boat.
Like a skiff.
They're yelling at each other, and I'm like, I have no idea what this is.
There's even moments that are like they're in a relatively quiet location
but Christopher Nolan has chosen to get Hans Zimmer to give it a bit of
over the top as they talk.
You can't hear what's happening in this.
And look, James, I don't have many skills,
but I do have medically certified excellent normal range hearing.
They test me at work, so I have to know.
MESO!
Yeah, exactly.
They yell at me.
He's good.
But every time, the doctor, it's always a different doctor,
is like, huh, perfect hearing.
So what I'm saying is, Christopher Nolan, you're wrong.
What are you doing?
I love this.
This is another quote from that article.
I was a little shocked to realize how conservative people are
when it comes to the sound, which you mentioned.
Because you can go into a film that looks like anything.
You can shoot on your iPhone, no one's going to complain.
But if you mix sound a certain way or if you use certain sub-frequencies,
people get up in arms.
The difference is, though, if a movie looks like shit,
also people will be like, this looks like shit.
But if you can still see it, people won't complain
because you can see it and you're like, this is what's happening because I can see it. If you can still see it, people won't complain because you can see it and you're like,
this is what's happening because I can see it.
If you can't see it properly, people complain.
It's the same with sound.
If you can hear it, people don't complain.
But if people can't...
If you film on your iPhone but also across a desk
and your character's over the one side of the desk
and you've got a glass and a mug filled with pencils and a water...
And the room's filled with water yeah right
then people will be like i can't see what's happening and if there isn't a point to that
like initially i'm like oh maybe the point is we will discover at a certain step of the movie that
there's a reason we can't hear these things or there isn't no and again if i if you were filming
in behind a bunch of props and crap and then
afterwards you go oh i see why they did that because at the end we reveal it behind it
they've been nude the whole time or whatever i get it but if it's the austin powers
yes exactly i understand austin powers now but if there isn't it is just we would complain i think
if you like i didn't understand what was happening because the characters were handing each other objects and I couldn't see them.
Yeah.
You know, whatever.
And they never explained it.
Yeah.
So box office, just quickly, because we are going to get into this.
We haven't done, like, an actual cinema release in a long bloodshot.
But $200 million worldwide.
James, James.
Sorry.
Before you finish.
I'm going to do it.
Don't worry.
I've written it down.
I'm doing this first.
Then I'll add surprises. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would not forget. Okay, cool, man. So'm going to do it. Don't worry. I've written it down. I'm doing this first. Then I'll add surprises.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I would not forget.
Okay, cool, man.
So it cost $200 million.
It made $350 million.
So it probably didn't make its money.
It's just traditional.
I know, Mason.
I can't feel cracker.
It's the third highest grossing movie of the year behind The 800 and Bad Boys 3.
What's The 800?
I think it's a Chinese release.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, I know what you're talking about.
But it might not be that.
So we're going to do non-spoilers, then spoilers.
Yes.
Mason, what do you think the story was?
Oh, James, no.
It's been so long.
You made me do it.
Okay.
Well, here's the thing.
The plot of this movie is not complicated.
No, it's not.
Okay, the plot is there's a bad man and he wants to do a bad thing.
How Russian is he?
He's quite Russian, I think.
He's certainly foreign.
I'll give him that.
And if he acquires the thing, it'll be bad for the world.
But the only people that can stop him are a couple of backwards boys
up to mischief.
That's how I've written backwards boys.
That's it.
Just a couple of backwards boys.
That's the plot.
I mean, that's it.
There's no – the difficulty in understanding this movie
is the nuance and hearing the dialogue.
Totally.
And I also think it's not just the dialogue which makes it hard.
There's an action scene, a particular one at the end,
I guess it's a slight spoiler, where people are running
in different time periods
and they're kind of marked who is who,
but it's also very unclear about what's happening
and how they're kind of achieving their goal.
It was just people running in different directions
and backwards shooting rocket launchers.
Look, in spoilers we will talk about the mechanism,
like the gimmick of this movie,
and it is not entirely clear what is happening.
But again, if there was more, and again, we don't necessarily need dialogue,
but it would be nice if you could hear all the available dialogue.
I think a really good example of this done well is Inception.
Yes.
Because the core idea isn't any more complicated than what this is.
Yes.
But the execution of those ideas is very transparent in Inception.
And we have made fun of that movie for providing too much exposition.
But at no point am I like, my God, what is, why are they,
why is that van falling so slowly?
What's happening?
We know.
And I think also if you went back and you looked at this
and you broke it down frame by frame, I'm sure mechanically,
like, it all works.
Yeah.
Like, these people are moving in the right time frame.
Yeah.
Like, as opposed to these ones and this guy, yep,
he's supposed to be there.
But it's the why that eludes you if you don't understand.
Yeah.
But it's also like, and because I'm talking about the last scene
in particular, like the finale, because it's so complicated,
it's too much to actually kind of take in.
Like for me, I'm like I understand the gist of what they're trying to do,
but fucked if I could tell you exactly what each kind of group of people is doing.
Even though I think they did say that – I can't do it.
I can't talk about spoilers.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anyway, it's well cast.
It's good.
I like John David Washington.
He's good.
Robert Pattinson.
And he's very Denzel Washington.
Very much so.
Having not really seen him in anything else.
Have you seen Black Klansman?
Yes.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
He's in that.
Yeah, that's right.
But I also really liked Elizabeth Debicki.
And I like – she's also six foot three.
I like seeing those two together.
Like you don't often see that in the movies, do you know what I mean?
I think that's really cool.
That he didn't demand boxes on his face.
Yeah, exactly, yeah.
What's Elizabeth Debicki been in?
She's the gold woman from Guardians 2.
Oh, she is too, yeah, right.
She also plays a similarly distressed,
because she's trapped with a lunatic in The Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston.
Yeah, right.
It's essentially the same character.
Sure, yeah.
Of like, how am I going to get away from this arms dealer?
And he's like, I'll save you from this arms dealer.
Don't you worry about it.
And she's like, you don't even love me.
And he's like, maybe I don't.
Maybe initially I was just doing it for me,
but maybe I've got a bit of a heart of gold.
It's a wrong part where he's rescuing her to win a bet.
Yeah.
But now I actually do love you, so.
Yeah, I mean, so all that I'm like, not very interesting.
Yeah. But whatever. But Kenneth Branagh is love you. Yeah, I mean, so all that I'm like, not very interesting. Yeah.
But whatever.
But Kenneth Branagh is in this.
Yeah.
Even though I knew he was in it and I like Kenneth Branagh,
they kind of hold off on the reveal that he's the villain.
And I'm like, who's this going to be?
Because remember in Interstellar when they're like, it's Matt Damon.
A black hole.
Yeah.
The villain's that black hole that made them all go really old.
But do you remember in Interstellar when there was that reveal?
I'm like, oh, cool.
I thought they were going to sneak in a secret actor.
Yeah, right.
And then I'm like, oh, no, I did know this.
Yeah, right, right.
I just haven't thought about this movie in six months.
But there's another act.
They were going to sneak in Widd Al Yankovic from that video clip
where he talks backwards the whole time.
Exactly.
But I thought they were going to.
Was that Amish Paradise?
I can't remember.
It probably was.
Yeah.
But I thought they might have. I mean, Amish Paradise? I can't remember. It probably was. Yeah. But I thought they might have-
I mean, they did do that because there's another pretty major actor
who might be Australian in this.
He's got a beard.
He's part of the army.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Right, right.
He might be Australian.
He's not Australian, but I think he's maybe trying to be Australian in this.
Okay, right.
I don't know that for a fact.
Uh-huh.
But, yeah, you know what this is?
Yes, go on.
It's a Bond movie, which he's talked about.
It's like the ones, you know, where they storm the volcano at the end,
whichever that one is.
It's a real, yeah, it's a Roger Moore era.
The whole thing is like a massive homage to one of those.
Yes.
But you've gummed it up with all this other stuff,
which maybe didn't need to be here.
Again, I don't think necessarily it is as gummed up as we think it is.
It's just so much of your brain space, for me anyway,
is being devoted to be like, what?
And again, if I do see this again at the cinemas before it comes to streaming,
I will go to an open caption thing so I don't have to look down.
I can just look at the screen and the dialogue is written down for me.
Yeah.
I think if people don't understand this,
it's because they're using too much brain power to be like,
what are you saying?
Well, what I would say is that what I mean by as in it's too gummed up,
what I would think would be interesting is what if Christopher Nolan
just did like a Bond-style movie?
A real, yeah.
Just take all that other shit out.
Because this is essentially like a guy's got a do A real, yeah. Just take all that other shit out. Uh-huh.
Because this is essentially like a guy's got a doomsday weapon and they have to stop him.
Yes.
Except they're a couple of backwards boys.
A couple of backwards boys.
Yeah.
So what if you didn't do any of that?
Do you think that would make it?
Like, you know, like Inception is a heist movie,
but it's also about dreams.
Yeah, right.
If it was just a regular heist movie.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah, I don't know.
I wonder if that holds no interest for him, I guess.
Yeah.
I'm sure he's been approached about Bond, but he's like,
I'm beyond Bond now.
I'm on different soundscapes.
You couldn't possibly comprehend.
That's exactly right.
It's a bit of a simple soundscape over a Bond movie, isn't it?
Bang, bang.
Oh, not for me.
No, thank you.
I would also say this.
I don't think the trick in this of a bunch of shit running backwards
is that spectacular to look at.
Like a car uncrashing is not that interesting no that's true but again it's it's like it's a little bit like
inception and then most of the good effects shots are in the trailer yeah and when you combine them
all in there like rapid fire one after the other like oh bullets are going backwards and cars are
flipping backwards and whatever that does look kind of cool but yeah you're right there is a
sequence in this where there's just a car going backwards down a freeway.
Because I can do that.
Yes.
Like I could film, I mean, I'd have to crash a car.
It would be expensive.
But do you know what I mean?
But it's not, there's nothing that complicated to that.
Yeah.
And when you add that, it's not even an effect.
You just reverse it.
It's not that interesting.
The effect is you put the gear into reverse.
There's a moment where a backwards boy fights a regular going boy,
and I think that's a good use of it because one of them is fighting backwards.
Well, that's the thing.
I think in the aftermath, when you get to the end,
there are some revelations where you go, oh, I understand what was –
now I understand what was happening in that sequence.
Now that the truth has been revealed about a particular thing,
I go, oh, that's actually quite impressive,
but I would need another watch too.
I would probably like to see, I wonder if maybe if they do a home release,
they could do a version where you see some sequences happening in parallel
so you can fully understand what's happening.
Well, our friend Hollywood Pete had an idea,
which I'll talk about in spoilers because he messaged me about it.
But I guess we should do spoilers?
Let's do spoilers.
I'm going to say best movie ever.
I enjoyed what we had. I did like it.
Visually it's very spectacular
except for driving a car backwards.
Even though I know there were
the dialogue
and I feel like that. So bad. I cannot
overstate how bad it is. But I don't
think my cinema was as bad as yours because I think
going into it as well I was really like
I was really focusing because I'd heard
especially when you messaged me like you were like, get the box.
Sure.
I was like, I'm not going to get the box.
I'm going to, but I think it's, I got the gist of it.
Oh, sure.
So I wasn't like, at the end, I'm like, I don't know what happened.
Oh, no, I know.
I get the gist, but yeah, but there's the minutiae in it was like, I'm sure I've missed
some things here.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Anyway.
I just think it would have been more enjoyable if you could understand what the dialogue was.
Yes.
Anyway, best movie ever.
What do you think?
Yeah, best movie ever.
Anyway, spoilers.
It's probably my least favourite of his movies, though.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I think I will, it might grow on me again if I watch it at home.
I still think I like it more than Interstellar because it's not as sad.
I like Interstellar.
Anyway, so the mechanic.
Yeah.
Nobody's travelling through time, but are they?
Put a pin in it.
Yes.
But are they?
Yes.
Are they, though?
Because I think Robert Pattinson is from the future
and he's just been running backwards.
Oh, yeah, he is too.
That's true.
Oh, yeah.
Do you want to explain the premise before we get into this?
So the premise, so we're wondering when we watch the trailer,
how is it that John David Washington is catching those bullets,
he's not firing the bullets?
Well, it turns out it's because the bullets have had their entropy invert.
Nothing's traveling.
Like there's not a,
there's not a machine and it zaps it.
He's not,
he's not reversing the flow of time.
Well,
there is,
he's not reversing the flow of time.
The bullets are irradiated with something from the future that makes their
entropy reversed,
inverted. And so the bullets go backwards. from the future that makes their entropy reversed, inverted,
and so the bullets go backwards.
So if you get caught in the path of a bullet going backwards,
that hurts a lot, I guess.
But here's my question.
Let's say you buy a box of inverted bullets.
Where are they?
Like where do you buy them?
Like let's say because there's an arms dealer in this
and supposedly she's selling people these inverted bullets.
Where are they?
Do you buy the casings?
That's what I'm saying.
Do you hold onto the casings?
Because you can't get a box of them because they're out in the world.
Yeah, well, that's what I'm saying.
Yeah, I agree.
There's a few things like that.
There's another bit where they're like, when you get caught in an explosion, you freeze.
I'm like, that's what?
Yeah.
That doesn't make any sense.
That's not how time travel works.
Right. Where fire is backwards. Uh-huh. Doesn't make any sense. That's not how time travel works, where fire is backwards.
It doesn't make any sense.
There's a few things like, yeah, I agree.
Like if you buy your reverse rocket launcher,
do you just buy an empty rocket?
You know what it is?
You could just sell people empty rocket launchers and be like,
well, this is my reverse time rocket launcher.
You just buy an empty gun and then you just carry it around
and on instinct you use it.
That's what it. Yeah.
That's what it must be.
Well, exactly.
But also I guess the question, because there's a scene in that car chase,
there's a moment where you just see one of the side mirrors of the car
has a big crack in it.
And then you go, oh, time has been altered.
Because it was normal for a second and then it was altered
and then it gets hit by that car.
I didn't even notice that.
And then it's fine again and you're like, oh, okay.
So does that mean when you purchase some inverted bullets,
then a bunch of bullet holes just appear in the world?
I don't know.
Exactly, right?
Yes, maybe.
But anyway, so how you invert a thing or a person in a lot of cases is that
and so the idea being that if you find these inverted bullets,
that means maybe other things can be inverted.
And they're finding inverted artifacts and all this sort of stuff.
Bits and bobs.
Bits and bobs and gears and such.
Yeah.
So I guess, so it turns out later you can invert people.
Yeah.
But I don't think, they're not actually travelling back through time.
I think you have to, like if you invert yourself,
you have to exist in you invert yourself you have to
exist in the backwards time travel universe universe for as long as it takes yeah so so
presumably robert pattinson got in the inverted time machine yeah in years in the future and he's
just been living backwards some of it for months or years potentially and then he's been like
subtly reversing and not reversing himself yeah during the course of and then he's been like subtly reversing and not reversing himself during the course of the movie.
He's been uneating his meals.
He's been uneating all his tea and crumpets.
Yeah.
But also when you're running backwards,
you can also exist in the regular universe but you're backwards.
So presumably if you go through the backwards machine,
you're running backwards in time while the universe is kind of crashing against you like a wave going
in the other direction. So I don't think you're an entirely backwards universe. You are just
moving against it. Does that make sense? No.
Moving back. So you're moving backwards as it's moving past you.
Yeah, right. Uh-huh.
That makes sense?
Yes, I think so, yeah.
And so Alfred and Hollywood Pete had the idea that what if you got
to the halfway point of the movie and then it switched
and then it's the whole movie again but backwards
from the different perspective.
So you only have that one change.
So all the weird things that happened like the corridor fight,
there's like more of that but it all pieces together backwards.
Would this involve a significant re-edit, I guess?
Oh, yeah, definitely.
And, yeah, you'd have to remake it.
Yes.
The whole movie.
But that way you don't have to do the minutiae of every little thing
that goes backwards and bullets are this and fire's cold
and cars are backwards.
Yeah.
Where you just have like an action movie where a bunch of weird shit happens
and then you see the other side of it.
Yeah, right.
On the opposite end.
And I'm like, that's very interesting.
And they maybe should have done that.
Oh, maybe, yeah.
That's why he's Hollywood, Pete, and we're not Hollywood James and Mason.
We're regular men.
Yeah, that's right.
But I also thought that like there were a few things that I was like,
okay, I don't, why would that?
One of them is that she's trapped by a painting that she sold to her husband.
So for those who are still listening to this.
And you haven't watched the movie for some reason.
Don't worry, we'll reverse all this later.
Yes.
You won't be spoiled.
The wife of Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth Debicki, they have a kid together,
but she wants to get out of a relationship because he's a horrible Russian arms dealer.
Yeah.
And so, but there's a moment we find out.
I thought he was such a nice Russian arms dealer.
I know.
He didn't turn any of us.
Son of a bitch. He bought from her for some reason, because she's some kind of art dealer,
a forgery, a painting forgery.
And he knew it was a forgery.
And the reason he bought it was because he could hold it over her.
And then if she ever tried to leave, he could send her to jail
because she'd go to jail for selling a forgery.
Selling a forgery.
But it's also like you're an arms dealer.
Like you don't need to buy.
You could make up anything.
You have unlimited power and resources.
If you leave me, I'll shoot you with this gun.
Exactly.
Of which I have so many.
Do you know what I mean?
Like I could just put you in jail.
Yeah.
I could keep you on this boat in the middle of the ocean.
Like you don't need to have a painting to take to the authorities.
Sure, right.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was really strange to me authorities. Sure, right. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That was really strange to me.
I don't know.
And there was another moment where, so at the end, in the climax,
they have to get through a gate and they can't get through a gate
because the gate's been locked, maybe reverse locked.
I don't know, but it's locked.
Yes.
It's where they're performing a time pincer manoeuvre.
Yeah, one group of troops are going forward in time.
Oh, yeah, so the weapon that's going to destroy the world
is the physical manifestation of an algorithm
that if you put it together,
that means you know how to invert things.
But there's also a doomsday device linked to Kenneth Branagh.
Yeah, and his Fitbit.
And if he dies, that goes off and the universe collapses in on itself
or something.
Yeah, the flow of time, while the flow of time normally goes forwards,
as we understand it, and there's some few people going backwards,
which is more difficult, what would happen is that that would reverse
and time would flow backwards mostly and then we'd all die.
The planet would explode, I guess.
From going backwards too much.
Too many backwards boys.
Way too many.
Initially you'd be like, oh my god,
there's so many backwards boys, let's all be backwards.
Then the world would explode.
But there's a moment where
you can't get through the gate and then
there's a dead body there and you see a little shrinkant
on it and you're like, who's this?
And I'm like, that's Robert Pattinson.
Robert Pattinson from earlier, yeah.
And then the body springs to life and then gets backwards shot
and then they're able to get through the gate.
And then at the very end it's revealed that it's like,
that was actually Robert Pattinson.
And I'm like, I know.
Yeah, we saw the trinket at the start of the movie.
Like this is the thing that you explain well, this really obvious thing.
Yep, yep.
Do you know what I mean?
It was just like, oh, what an emotional moment.
Yeah, I know.
I figured it out.
Yeah.
Because I think you showed me it also.
Yeah, it was right at the start of the movie,
Robert Pattinson Scott, he's in the opera
and he's got the trinket in his backpack.
Yeah, but I guess that's also the reveal that you didn't actually know
that it was him at the opera.
But I presumed that it was.
Yeah, same.
Yeah.
Yeah, same.
Yeah.
But I guess you could say.
It was the scarf that clued me in.
The scarf gave it away.
But I guess you could also say that reveal is for John David Washington's
character, who, by the way, is named the protagonist.
That is how he is credited.
Yeah.
And he even says it in the movie, I'm the protagonist.
He does say that.
You know, like a movie.
Why now do you do you
give that why now do you decide not to give one of your characters in a movie a name i know i know i
know the premise of this is like well you can't tell anybody your name or your secrets but also
we'll just let you in on everything if you can do the gesture and say tennis so what i thought was
also strange was the way that they were tackling backwards crime yes was that they didn't really know what they were doing.
They're just like, I don't know, it's mostly instinct.
It was a bit of like Dirk Gently in terms of you just kind of stumble around and things happen and you kind of sort of make it up or just go with it on the fly.
Like you can sort of plan, but it's all predestined.
What if you're the worst murderer in the world and you don't know
and you're like, I'm back with shooting all these orphans.
I don't understand.
I went on instinct.
No.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
That would be mad, mad, mad, mad, mad.
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah.
So I don't, I don't, do you know what I mean?
I do know what you mean.
So I'm like, is this just, do these guys even know what they're doing?
Yeah.
I mean, I know they're making pizza maneuvers.
It did feel a bit like, you're right.
They didn't know.
They're like, we don't know.
You're right.
It did feel like a bit, yeah.
Yeah.
Terry Pratchett kind of good omens like, well,
sometimes the universe just sends you a sign kind of thing.
Yeah.
All right. cool, great.
Did you notice also it simultaneously went, like there's a woman they meet at the start,
that the protagonist meets near the start, and she explains to him about backwards bullets.
If you're a backwards boy, you're going to need these backwards bullets.
He's like, cool, wouldn't they be regular bullets then for me?
And she's like, don't think about it.
There's a moment where she's literally like, try not to think about it.
But this movie simultaneously says to you, hey, don't think about it. There's a moment where she's literally like, trying not to think about it. But this movie simultaneously
says to you, hey, don't think
about it too much. But also,
you need to really think about this. Do you know what I mean?
It's like two things happening at the
same time here, which I guess is
very tenet. Isn't it though?
Really makes you think. But do you know what I mean? It's like,
pay attention, but also
don't think about it. Which is it?
It was alright. It was alright, wasn't it? Yeah, it was a pretty alright movie.. Yeah. Which is it? It was all right.
It was all right, wasn't it?
Yeah, it's a pretty all right movie.
Yeah.
I probably liked it more than the movie Insomnia with Al Pacino
and Robin Williams.
Oh, yeah, okay, right.
That is actually, if you want a straightforward down the line,
no twists and turns.
I guess that's probably true.
It's just like.
Okay, so did the big rock face with all the bullet holes in it just appear?
Like clearly they've dug it out of somewhere.
Yeah.
But where? They don't know. It clearly they've dug it out of somewhere. Yeah. But where?
They don't know.
It just happened because you just go with instinct.
Yeah, but I mean like because it wasn't like it's.
I don't know.
Were the bullets always in there?
I guess.
Because there would have had to have been a point
where the bullets weren't in there, right?
Yeah, because it's a rock face.
But if it was backwards, that means those bullets would have always been.
I don't know.
I think what happens is when you buy the backwards bullets,
then all of a sudden a million bullets appear in this rock face
because you're always destined to reverse fire them.
Like with the mirror.
Yeah.
Where like it wasn't there and when it was there.
Yeah.
Yeah, cool.
Pretty good.
Did you like the reverse stuff when things would jump into your hand?
You're like, wow, that's like an effect.
Yeah, I sure did.
That you'd see at high school.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, when somebody does a stunt but it's backwards,
they need someone to jump up on a roof.
Yeah, that's true.
They'll reverse it up.
Jump up the roof.
Yeah, yeah, they'll reverse it.
Yeah.
Did you like it how sometimes they were clearly like walking backwards
and then they made it go forwards so they were walking real odd?
Yeah, yeah, I liked that too.
Backwards car chase?
Yeah.
I don't know, man. It was, I heard it wasn't great. Yeah, yeah, I like that too. Backwards car chase. Yeah. I don't know, man. It was
um, I heard it wasn't great.
Yeah. So I wasn't disappointed
but I was like,
this is alright. Maybe, again, like you said, maybe
I'll watch this multiple times, which I also don't
want to. I'll watch it one more time
with subtitles on. That's all I'll give it.
And then I'll have a final judgment, I think.
Very good. All in all,
Backwards car chase. Another bullet in the wall.
No, very good.
Should we move to the next segment of the show?
Yes, because I've got to go in a little bit.
I've got to go to work.
Oh, yeah, you do have to go to work.
Well, what's it called then?
It's called What We Reading.
What We Gonna Read.
I'm doing the thing.
What We Reading.
Now, actually, I only have questions for you for what we're reading
because I bought Spider-Man Miles Morales.
Go on.
But I have not had a chance to play it as of yet.
But I know you, Mason.
Did you get PS4 or PS5?
PS4.
Did you get PS5?
No.
Would I or?
Did you?
No, I didn't.
Or would you?
Yeah, I would maybe, but not today.
No.
No, not now.
No.
Yeah, I have seen some gameplay or some cutscene footage of PS5 Miles Morales.
Yeah.
And where, like, the opening cinematic is Miles Morales gets off the subway
and you can see, like, the fingerprint smudges on his headphones.
Oh, man.
Like, that's the level of fidelity.
But I'm like, I'm not going to see that.
And it looks great.
Yeah, it does, yeah.
Yeah.
What are your questions, James?
I mean, it's good, isn't it? It's i mean it's not it's not reinventing the wheel as
far as spider-man games go it is essentially the same one as spider-man ps4 from their fall damage
no it's uh but but it's you know it is simply more it's it's more of the same but there is a
storyline obviously you get to play as miles morales he's got some new powers there's new
costumes um it's super fun just to swing around the city yeah it's a different style to it right Obviously you get to play as Miles Morales. He's got some new powers. There's new costumes.
It's super fun just to swing around the city.
Yeah.
It's a different style to it, right?
He's got more of a kind of. Yeah, he's more flailing, but you sort of learn more like, you know,
in the air flare, like he can do flips and tumbles and stuff.
But, yeah, it's not like, and it's a series we always compare it to,
but it's not like Arkham Asylum to Arkham City where it's like,
it's a huge new universe.
It's just kind of like.
It's the same, but there's snow.
It's the same city, but there's snow and there's like new bodegas
and stuff like that.
Oh, very good.
Pretty good, right?
Yeah.
How's the combat?
Still very solid.
Yeah, good.
There's some bosses in there which you didn't expect?
I haven't gone that far, to be honest.
Apparently it's like half the length of the last one,
which I'm fine with.
Well, I've played it for quite, maybe not even two hours,
and I'm like 15% in or something like that.
Yeah, okay, yeah.
It does seem quite brief.
Movies, I mean, games don't need to go forever.
Well, yeah, I mean, I figure if it's an eight-hour playthrough,
that's like $10 an hour.
Yeah, exactly.
It's a pretty good deal.
And you've got the open world stuff that you can do.
You can collect all the drones that you want or whatever you're supposed to do
in these games or whatever.
And, you know, it's pretty, again, I feel like maybe this is a game
where I won't rush because we're going to have to do an episode on it.
I'm not going to rush to finish the storyline.
You know, it's the thing.
What I like about it is it does sort of ease you into,
like the previous game, it sort of eases you into all the various systems
where it's like, okay, here's how you attack and whatever.
And now here's. So it doesn't just start where it's like,
you should have remembered the last game.
No,
no,
exactly.
Yeah.
And it like,
you know,
I mean,
there,
there is,
but it's,
it is,
but you know,
you,
you,
I think you start in midair maybe.
And it's like,
hold on to,
right.
You're going to swing or whatever.
And then,
and it sort of teaches you through and then you get some like combat
training and then it's like,
you gain this skill and it's like,
you know,
like a video game,
James,
I don't actually played any video games kind of thing. And you sort of get additional skills as you go. And it's, and then it's like you gain this skill and it's like a video game, James. I've played video games.
And you sort of get additional skills as you go.
And it's good fun.
I'm really looking forward to it.
Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
And basically as you progress partially through the story,
it's like now you can go around the map and here's all the training sessions.
And you go, okay, that's a new thing.
And here's an app for your suit, and it's all the people who are in trouble in the city
and need your help and you can swipe through that.
Do you look at it?
It's in your, you swipe on your controller and it pops up.
Ah, like a little heads up kind of fun.
Yeah, like a little heads up thing.
And here's, oh my God, remember all these presh mems we left around the city?
Why don't you go collect all the presh mems?
You know what I mean?
What kind of presh mems have they got?
Like, oh my God, remember when we made rocket skates?
Remember when me and my high school friend, we made rocket skates? I? Like, oh my God, remember when we made rocket skates? Remember when me and my high school friend,
we made rocket skates?
I don't remember that.
James, you and I made rocket skates together.
We never made rocket skates.
No, we did.
We rocketed around the city.
We rocketed around New York City, if you remember.
So it was like Peter Parker collecting backpacks
in the first game or whatever it was.
Yeah, it's kind of thing.
And you collect like little tech pieces
to upgrade your suit and that kind of thing.
Great.
And have you unlocked a bunch of bonus suits yet?
No, I've only unlocked, I didn't get the pre-order,
but you can with which you get some pre-order suits,
but you can unlock those in game.
So I've unlocked one of those and the classic Miles Morales
Spider-Man suit.
Looking good.
Love it.
All about it.
I'm very excited to play it.
Thank you for that. You're very welcome. I also. All about it. I'm very excited to play it. Thank you for that.
You're very welcome.
Also, I wanted to mention that we read Secret Wars this week for BigSandwich.co, our comic book, classic book club.
That'll be up right now if you do want to check it out, if you wanted to see us rubbish
a comic.
Spoiler alert, it's not very good.
No, it's not good.
But we do talk about it.
That's right.
We also talk about the flow-on effect from the things that establish themselves.
I like getting in-depth with this sort of stuff. We talk about the creators
and all that sort of stuff. And the better
works that they've done.
Maybe we should have changed gears
and read Craven's Last Hunt instead
but we didn't. Exactly.
Maybe next time. Should we go to the next
section of the podcast then?
It's Letters. It is Letters.
The classic one was Letters
Oh Letters, we love you.
Some letters, they're only a day away.
I know they're here right now.
We're going to do Letters.
I don't know if you've seen this, Mason, but Space Force has been renewed.
Oh, the season two.
Okay.
Stim Corral.
What did you read this week, by the way?
I talked about it just then, but I also talked about Unsuggestable.
Oh, yeah.
In Base 8, I watched.
Have you watched that?
No, what's that?
It's great.
I talked about it last week.
Oh, you did too?
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's really cool.
All the great boys.
What else did I read?
What else did I watch?
I watched Good Time with Robert Pattinson.
Oh, yeah, that's a good one, right?
Which I'd never seen before.
A Safdie Brothers production.
Which, again, I'll talk about Unsuggestable.
But, yeah, man, whoa.
Whoa. Whoa. Yeah, good movie. Anyway, that's what I did. Sorry, I was talk about on Suggestible, but yeah, man, whoa, whoa. Whoa.
Yeah, good movie. Anyway, that's what I did.
Sorry, I was trying to speed it along because I knew you had to go to work
and I didn't want to... No, let's bog it down a little bit.
Let's bog it down, let's slow it down.
Well, I've got some letters here and you can actually reach the show
by hashtagging WeeklyPlanetPod
on Twitter or shooting over
at Gmail to weeklyplanetpod at gmail.com.
That's right. What have you got this week, Mason?
This is from Kiso.
Hello.
Listening in Labor.
Oh, my goodness.
Hi, James and Mason.
Kiso here from Hong Kong.
Just thought I'd drop you a note to say that your podcast is currently getting me through
the early stages of Labor.
I've been listening to you for the whole of my pregnancy.
Thanks for the entertaining chat and fun distraction from the discomfort of being pregnant, particularly
during a pandemic.
Yeah, and boo.
I've also been working backwards through the podcast, Tenet style.
She doesn't say that.
A couple of backwards, boys.
Yeah, a couple of backwards.
That's good.
While also listening to new episodes as they come out.
Just finished listening to the episode with the Geostorm review,
where James practically lost his mind.
That's not true.
I was very composed for the entirety of that.
I'm also a big Sandwich subscriber.
Your review of Batman Year One inspired me to download
and read my first ever comic, so thanks for that.
Oh, cool.
Great.
Yeah.
That's really cool.
Good luck in labor, man.
Well, I mean, I assume it's over now.
Hopefully.
This is from four days ago.
They could be extended.
Yep.
Good luck.
I hope it's all over and everybody's happy and healthy and doing great.
In the meantime, can I be the podcast's official lady listening in labor?
Yes, you absolutely can.
You can.
Yes.
Oh, good luck.
I hope it all went really well.
Me too.
Because labor is someone who has not done it, but has been next to someone who's doing labor. Yep. No good, mate. Yes. Oh, good luck. I hope it all went really well. Me too. Because Labor is someone who has not done it,
but has been next to someone who's doing Labor.
Yeah.
No good, mate.
No.
Nah, people like, there's lots of lies around Labor, mate.
Let me tell you this.
Labor lies.
Labor lies, exactly.
Oh, I heard about some bloody Labor lies.
That's a good political attorney.
Yeah, yeah.
But I hope it went really well.
Let us know how it went.
I hope everyone's doing well.
Yeah, I've got a tweet here from-
How long did you stay in that room?
The labour room?
Yeah, yeah.
A long time.
Really, did you?
Okay, so one time, one time, they said, because it was like a...
They said you can leave and that was a trap.
It was like an 18-hour labour and title, but it wasn't all in the room
because we were at home for a little bit.
So I was probably 12 hours in that room.
They said, go and get something to eat because we're going to be here for a while.
And you're like Claire, you want a quarter pounder.
Yeah, so I went down the lobby and I got a chicken
schnitzel sandwich and I came back up.
And the only thing that Claire really remembers from the labour
because it's just like a blur of like
just pain is looking over at me
just like hoeing into a big...
And I'm like, I was next to you literally the entire
time except when I was ordered to leave
the room to get food.
And it wasn't even very good. I didn't even finish it.
And then she named your child Chicken Schnitzel.
Chicken Schnitzel Betrayal.
That's the middle name.
But no, other than that.
And then it was with the last time Claire to Caesar.
So they prep her for surgery.
Caesar salad.
Caesar salad.
Sandwich.
And so I'm outside the room and then you just get ushered in
and then you sit next to them while they just like squeeze a baby out of you
like a tube of toothpaste.
Good luck to everyone. Yeah, good luck. Good luck to everyone. it in and then you sit next to them while they just like squeeze a baby out of you like a tube of toothpaste. Oh.
Yeah.
Good luck to everyone.
Yeah, good luck.
Good luck to everyone.
Anyway, Eli says on Hashtag Weekly Planet Pod, I practically given up on Star Wars movies
until Taika Waititi started writing one.
What are some franchises you could be convinced to start leaving in again if certain creators
were attached and who would need to be involved?
Highlander.
But who would you get involved with?
Like the Ryan Reynolds reboot they were talking about?
No.
Remember that?
I like Ryan Reynolds' back.
What about Hugh Jackman?
As Highlander?
Yeah.
As Mr. Highlander.
I reckon he'd be better in the Sean Connery role at this point.
Do you think so?
Yeah, age him up a little bit.
Oh, he's 50.
He wouldn't have to age him up that much.
That's true.
Yeah.
But then he has the wisdom of his years.
What do you mean? He wouldn't have to age him up that much. That's true. Yeah. But then he has the wisdom of his years. Yeah?
What do you mean?
I think you want your Highlander characters to look kind of aged.
Okay.
Because also they get to a point that they die and that's the age they stay at.
Yes.
So if you're a kid, you're stuck as a kid or whatever.
I think we talked about this recently.
Okay, sure.
Fair enough.
Yeah, I'd like to say that.
Well, the one I had, for example, of something that came out,
and it wasn't great, but I liked it enough,
was when Tim Miller and James Cameron were doing the new Terminator.
Yes.
I was like, oh, yeah.
But also I think if there were no Terminator movies in between,
I would have probably enjoyed it more as well.
Yeah, for sure.
Because they're like, the Terminator's old.
I'm like, I know, he was old in the last one.
I was just, when you brought this up, I was just thinking,
I thought Terminator, but then I'm like,
I don't know if I could watch another one.
Like I think the premise is too.
You'd have to go in a different time period, right?
We've talked about this.
I think we talk about it literally.
Every time, every episode we talk about this. Who could
come on board the Harry Potter franchise
for you to go toot-toot
all aboard? Oh, like as in
a direct actor? Whatever.
What if like Daniel
Radcliffe and Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were
back for the Cursed Child? Would you be like, toot-toot,
here we go?
Because at this point I'm kind of like...
No, I wouldn't watch it.
I mean, I don't know anything about Cursed Child.
But I.
It's decent.
It's a spectacular stage play.
Yeah.
At this point, if the original cast came back,
I'd want it to be like very self-aware.
A bit of a nudge and a wink in each other.
A bit of a nudge and a wink kind of thing.
Or maybe just them as the actors.
I would like to see a Harry Potter themed movie
where it's them navigating the world
where everybody loves them from the Harry Potter movies
but they've moved on.
Did you see the trailer for the Fresh Prince reunion?
I didn't see the trailer, no, but I saw the...
It looks awesome.
Does it?
Yeah, and I think someone made the comparison.
Is it a new episode of that show?
Okay, right.
But they get back together in memories,
which I don't always love because I know HBO Max
are spending a lot of money to get the cast of Friends together.
I feel like them sitting in a circle being like,
we got paid $5 million an episode or whatever.
I don't know.
I can't.
Like it was so, the trailer, it looked so fun.
And they really kind of like each other.
And I mean, I'm sure the people from Friends like each other,
but it just looked really cool.
I saw a trailer for the Saved by the Bell reboot.
I don't know if you saw that.
Isn't it good or something?
It's somewhere between
self-aware and not self-aware.
Clearly they're like
they're doing the bit where like this guy used to be
the cool guy and what's he like now kind of thing.
But it's also very... So like Zack Morris
is back. I've never... I don't really
know it that well. Zack Morris is definitely back there.
But it feels like halfway between sincere
and not sincere.
I don't know if it's going to work, but I'm probably not going to watch it.
I didn't really watch the original.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Anything else that you would be excited for?
What's a dead franchise?
Who would need to be on board for Bloodshot 2?
It'd have to be Vin Diesel.
Vin Diesel, yeah.
Yeah.
What about Riddick?
No, I don't think I'd watch another Riddick.
I mean, you would for this.
Yeah, I would for this, but not in real life, no.
I'm sure I'll think of one.
What about this?
Okay, for the next big Marvel event, what would you want it to be
where you're like 100% back, like endgame style, like invested?
Would you want a Secret Wars, a Secret Invasion?
Oh, I would want a single actors for real.
Yeah, that would be cool.
Yeah.
X-Men as well?
Or Doctor Doom.
That would be great.
I would love Doctor Doom.
Yeah.
Mads Mikkelsen.
As Doctor Doom.
Yeah.
But he's already been used as Kaecilius.
Oh, yeah.
He's already in a different Marvel movie.
He's already in a different Marvel movie.
That's the problem.
They use all the actors.
Yeah, they use every actor that's ever been.
Even in like tiny minor roles.
Yeah, that's right. I think this been. Even in like tiny minor roles.
Yeah, that's right.
I think this would be good fodder for a full episode actually.
Okay.
If people want to email in, maybe we'll do it next week.
Maybe we'll do it a different week.
I'd love to do it next week though,
but I have another tweet from C-Ray who says, no spoilers, but I cannot wait to hear James and Mason
rip the New Mutants to pieces.
Laughing emoji.
Is that next week?
I think it's streaming or something.
Let me check.
We can steal it.
Yeah, we could steal it or pay for it.
We could pay money for it.
Yeah, we could pay money for it, I guess.
Yeah.
But we've paid money for a lot of other X-Men movies, haven't we?
Yeah.
So it did come out in cinemas, digital release date.
But I would love to talk about it.
I haven't seen it.
No, neither have I.
So I would love to talk about it.
November 17th.
That's this week.
We'll talk about it next week.
Nice, we'll do that.
All right, but maybe put a pin in it.
That other thing you said, though.
So people, let us know of a dead franchise that you would love to bring back.
Who's directing it?
Who's in it?
What would bring you back to a Terminator?
Keep it brief.
But keep it real.
Keep it brief and real.
Tweet us or email us, whatever you wish.
We'd like to hear your thoughts.
Yeah, we would.
Maybe even like a – what would it take to get you back watching Scrubs again?
You know?
Just bring him back, I guess.
Bring him all back.
Cast of Scrubs.
Because he's doing like – for like Scrubs, it's done.
Like he's doing Ted Lasso, the guy who made Scrubs.
Oh, yeah, right, right, right.
And that's a fucking great show and it's new.
So I'm like I don't – just leave it. Okay. So we'll talk about it. Scrubs. Oh, yeah, right, right, right. And that's a fucking great show and it's new. So I'm like, I don't...
Just leave it.
Okay.
So we'll talk about it.
Scrubs is out.
We're not bringing back Scrubs.
What about if it's Scrubs but it's time travel and it's MASH?
It's MASH Scrubs.
JD's in the Vietnam War or whatever.
Yeah, nice.
It's more of a metaphor for the Vietnam War,
but it's set in Korea.
You know what I mean?
That's pretty cool.
Yeah, okay, I like it.
I mean, that's what the original scrub mash.
Anyway, maybe we'll remind you guys next week about the other thing.
But next week, new mutants.
Yes.
The newest mutants there are.
More like bloody old mutants.
It's been taking its bloody time.
Am I right, Mason?
Oh, yeah.
One last email.
Yeah.
This is from Owen Brady.
Hello, Owen Brady.
James is in Business Insider, and I'm studying marketing, and it is a lot.
What?
Hey, James and Mason. I'm doing a master's in digital marketing at the moment.
I have an undergrad in English, so I'm completely out of my depth.
And for one of my modules, we had to look at a case study for Planter's Peanuts.
Little did my professor know that I was already familiar with the monster that is Peanut Jr.
Anyway, I was doing some research into Planter's and found an article from Business Insider
where they cover the hashtag block Mr. Peanut campaign
James started during one of his episodes,
mental episodes, it says here.
This also happened while James was going through
his Mr. Pumpkin movies phase,
so the article refers to him as Mr. Pumpkin movies.
I thought this was pretty funny
and just thought I'd let you guys know if you didn't already.
All the best from Ireland.
Can I be the official digital marketing master student
of the podcast?
Yes, you can.
I did.
I forgot about that Mr Pumpkin Movies
Yeah you just did one
It wasn't even Halloween
You were just like
Mr Pumpkin Movies
I thought it was funny
I changed it back
Just before October
Very funny
Good stuff
I'm glad
I hope there's a print edition
Of that
Out there somewhere
Being pulped as we speak
But if there is
Let us know
If you've got it
Take a photo
I would love to see it.
I would absolutely love to see it.
Yeah, I'm proud of that.
Any flack have you received?
Did planters reach out to you?
Nobody reached out.
They didn't offer you free planters peanuts for life?
I could just get peanuts anywhere.
Yes, but I mean free peanuts.
I don't even eat that many.
They're not that good.
No, I don't either.
Yeah.
Again, cashews are better, I think.
Cashews are better.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's great. And thank you for the support. And I know every now and then people shoot are better. Cashews are better. Yeah. Yeah. That's great.
And thank you for the support.
And I know every now and then people shoot me through that they've blocked Mr. Peanut.
Yeah.
Appreciate it.
Keep it up.
Yeah, that's right.
Someone should pay for what they're doing.
You know, it's 2020 and they're like, Mr. Peanut's dabbing.
And it's like, fuck off with this.
Like, no.
Yeah.
What are you doing?
He should be flossing.
I know, right?
He should be doing the Carlton dance. The Fresh Prince dance. Exactly. Yeah. What are you doing? He should be flossing. I know, right? He should be doing the Carlton dance from Fresh Prince.
Fresh Prince dance, exactly, yeah.
I'm not interested.
Anyway, that's the show, isn't it, Mason?
The whole show.
Thank you, everybody, so much for listening.
I hope people enjoyed New Movie Talk.
New Old, more like Old Movie Talk.
That's so true, Mason.
That is so true.
Thanks, everybody, for subscribing and telling a friend
and leaving a nice review.
James, have you got one there?
I've got a couple here.
This is from Bandbeard, says,
from the great beyond of water.
Stateside listener of both the podcast as well as YouTube channel,
like mine and Knuckleheads, like myself when it comes to comics,
comic book movies and the lot.
But I need to know how the drop bears are holding up in Australia
during the whole 2020 ordeal.
That's a good question.
They're waiting for the tourists to come back.
Yeah, that's right. They're probably in hibernation up in ordeal. That's a good question. They're waiting for the tourists to come back. Yeah, that's right.
They're probably in hibernation up in them trees.
That's right.
Because they wouldn't be getting a lot of sustenance.
No.
Because there's not a lot of people out there.
They're going to hibernation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then when they see someone with a big camera strapped around their neck.
Yeah, that's right.
We're going to get some bush photography happening.
Strike.
And they strike.
Yeah, that's right.
I've got another one here from Boomer Whackadoo who says,
a therapist, by the way, now I just say whackadoo because I say,
or whatever it is, because I said often people give their fandoms a name.
Yes.
And I was like, I hate that.
And, you know, that would normally be a dumb name.
And I said that off the cuff.
Weekly Whackadoo.
And now I say it.
That's right, you do.
And it's a thing that I hate.
I love it.
And that was like five years ago.
It's dividing the fandom, James.
It certainly is.
Anyway, I just saw it.
Because I saw a thing recently that was also like,
if you want to get involved with your fandoms,
what do you want to do?
You want to take a more personalized approach.
It's like you want to talk to them one-to-one.
James, are you reading Business Insider magazine?
I'm reading, yeah.
But I just feel like that's very patronizing to be like,
what's up, fellow gamers, or whatever the fuck.
I don't know.
It just feels disingenuous. Some people are better at it than others. Anyway,
A Therapist's Therapy. I've never written a review for anything, but this podcast about
comic book movie news has proven worthy. It's the first podcast I've ever listened to. And
although I've found a few others I enjoy, this one remains my absolute favorite. I've been a
licensed mental health therapist for the past 15 years and listening to the Weekly Planet has been
a valuable part of my self-care and mental health, never fails to make me laugh or slightly smirk,
and has provided mindless relief after hours of listening
to people share their misery.
I'm also a father of five, and my two oldest sons are deaf.
I can say as a father that there have been many times
they're in the car with me and ask why I'm laughing
or I have a big dumb smile across my face.
Trying to explain whatever joke or wordy comment I had to them in sign language
has always been futile
but even though they don't get it they know it makes dad happy
and laugh a lot
that's really cool, that's great
thanks for the weekly entertainment where I can de-stress and feel refreshed
so I can have better therapists for my clients
keep up the good work
that's so great, you're doing good work
and look I'd just say maybe play the podcast for your therapy clients, I think.
Exactly.
Just play it to them.
It'd feel better.
You could have a good laugh together about it.
That's right.
Or they'd hate it.
They might hate it, yeah.
And you could talk about that.
Yeah, that's right.
You could just do it in an app.
Yeah, absolutely.
Just bloody reveal it, Mason.
That's right.
What have you got next?

Yeah.
We've got to find a big-ass bear.

No, that's where you jump in.
Oh, grab that jam, everybody.
We'll see you next week.

I was trying to throw you under the bus.
