Welcome back, everybody, to another episode of the Weekly Planet,
where we talk movies and comics and TV shows.
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday.
With me, as always, is my co-host, Nick Macehost.
That's me.
It's great to be here.
We're celebrating.
We're out of lockdown for probably another week.
Well, you know, ish.
We were supposed to have another guest this week.
We couldn't because of various lockdowns and whatever.
We can do it, apparently.
That's right.
We're technically media.
We're doing big dabs in celebration.
You should have seen how many dabs that Mason and
Mason alone was doing during the theme song. He started the
dabs. I wasn't doing it.
Because I would have brought
it up if I had done it. Well,
you know what? I'm doing dabs and I'm loving it.
Something that I wanted to mention, I've been thinking about
this week. I didn't mention
it last week, but I learned last week
that your son has given everyone
in your household a role within the Avengers.
Yes.
So you're the Falcon for some reason.
Yep.
Claire, your wife, is-
Also Falcon.
Double Falcons.
Captain Marvel?
Yep.
He is Ant-Man and your baby is Baby Groot.
Yes.
And then the other week you said to your son, hey,
Mesa's here, what role could Mesa have in the Avengers?
And your son said he can be a pig rolling down a hill.
And I've been thinking about it and honestly it's the funniest thing
he's ever said and maybe the funniest thing anyone's ever said.
So if you see your son at some point in the near future,
just let him know I said, well done.
That's so funny.
I just forgot that.
How did I forget that?
That's the funniest thing in the world.
And I didn't prompt him to say that, did I?
No, I don't think so, no.
He just said it.
He had it ready.
He's like a roast machine, this guy.
He's the king of sting, your son.
Oh, you're not wrong.
Anyway, they kept me going through lockdown
all this week. I'm like, that's good stuff.
Speaking of...
I made a note of it. That's the only note I've made
for this week. That's incredible. Actually, this is unrelated. I made a note in my phone the other night. I'm like, I made a note of it That's the only note I've made for this week That's incredible
Actually this is unrelated
I made a note in my phone the other night
I'm like I had a good idea for a movie
In the middle of the night
Great
So I wrote it down
I'm like I'd never write it down
This is going to be great
But you were inspired by my
The time the other day
When I wrote a thing down
Exactly
And it was dumb
But I looked at it in the morning
And it said
It was like
It's a skate room
But it's real life
And you get killed by the traps or whatever.
And I'm like, that movie exists.
It's called Escape Room.
It's called Escape Room.
What a fucking useless thing that I've done.
It's amazing.
I'm honestly embarrassed.
That's what my brain came up with.
Wow.
The movie Escape Room.
I feel like, though, I reckon your brain probably came up
with a fresher take, but the part of your brain
that records information was like the key part of this here is the escape room part yeah so i'll
write that down and then i'll remember the the other twist to this and i think that's what's
been lost to time yeah i think that was like oh it's like low budget you could do it in one
location it's brilliant like the saw movies like the saw movies anyways uh if you'll do it in one location. It's brilliant. Like the Saw movies. Like the Saw movies.
Anyways.
You'll have, in many years' time, when the escape room trend is over
and there's no more money to be made, your brain will be like,
yeah, and it's Harry Potter themed.
Oh, my God.
Whoa.
I would have been a billionaire.
Whoa.
So our Loki recaps are up.
That's right.
We're doing them every week.
BigSandwich.co if you want them early along with a bunch of other stuff.
What is it a big sandwich this week, Mason?
Do you remember?
It is maybe, are we going to talk about a year in history?
Maybe.
Let's bring it up.
All right.
I'll let you know and then we'll both know.
So last week we did Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This week, oh, so we got this covered, Mason.
Nice.
I remember enjoying this one a lot.
Yeah, so there you go.
We're recording them as they're coming out, so they're fresh and hot.
Fresh and hot and ready to go.
I think there might have been some fact-checking,
some hot facts or something like that.
Sounds about right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It was a good one.
Would you say, James, it was a good one?
I agree.
And the week after that for Book Club, I've just written Black Widow something.
So we'll probably, we'll like maybe-
We'll track down a Black Widow something.
We might just do Civil War or whatever.
Yeah, nice, nice, nice.
Anyways, time codes below if you're doing a jump around because this is a big news episode
this week.
It's the big news episode.
Again, we're going to have a guest.
We're going to do a topic, but whatever, whatever.
Lockdown.
Pig rolling down a hill.
That's worth the price of admission, I feel.
I think so too.
Aquaman news.
Anyone who turned off after that who was like,
you know what, this episode has peaked
and the podcast conceivably has also peaked.
There's no reason to continue listening to this.
Fair call.
Fair call.
Aquaman news.
Indiana Jones news.
Star Wars news.
She-Hulk news.
Lord of the Rings news.
Master of the Universe.
Did you see that trailer this week?
I did.
Excellent. Soldier Boy news. trailer this week? I did. Excellent.
Soldier Boy news, not Soldier Boy with an I.
That was another Soldier Boy.
Blue Beetle, Jurassic World, some more Jupiter's Legacy updates.
Oh, big scammers.
And then we're going to do a bit of E3, aren't we, Mason?
That's right.
Because there's been some E3 stuff.
There's been Elden Ring news.
That's right.
That's what we're going to do.
We all learned what it was after hearing the name of it multiple times.
I'm like, oh, I finally get it.
I get it now.
We know it.
We know it now.
So what's the title for Aquaman 2, Mason?
Not the Trench.
That was cancelled.
No.
They cancelled the Trench.
Aquaman, the Lost Kingdom of the Burger King.
Yes, I enjoyed your-
Sponsored content.
Yeah, absolutely.
Because you made a joke about that, didn't you? I did.
A few weeks prior to that. I've been known to make a joke.
Okay, so what's this Lost Kingdom?
Is it in the trench? What's going on? Well, isn't there seven
kingdoms that he has to unite and we only know some of them?
I mean, I guess. Because it wasn't at
Unite the Seven. To the extent that any of this
is real. Not a seven. No, I remember.
Not a seven. Well, they've moved
that from Unite the Seven. Yeah.
Was that initially meant to be Unite the Seven Seas?
No, that was.
Was it meant to be Unite the Seven Members of the Justice League,
but then they didn't have seven members of the Justice League?
But it was only on his poster.
Yeah, okay, right.
So I think it's Kingdoms, but it doesn't matter.
Okay.
Because sometimes they're in an air bubble, sometimes they're not.
That's true.
They don't know what they're doing.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, but as I mentioned when we did our Aquaman review,
I like how it started with, like,
Clark Kenton is serious and real and he's like,
oh, I don't know whether I want to be Superman.
And then we get to Aquaman and it's just Nicole Kidman standing in a fish skin.
She's just, like, holding a staff, also made of fish.
And it's just like, this is taking a turn, isn't it?
Is that sea monster speaking for the voice of Julie Andrews?
Yeah, exactly.
I still maintain
that it's wild that julie andrews was the voice of a sea monster in aquaman but she was not she
did not make a cameo in the mary poppins remake yeah weird right crazy what do you think that is
probably just doesn't like mary poppins anymore i know a singing boy she's got beef with emily
blunt oh bunt belief bunt belief yeah she's got a bunt belief but Emily Blunt. Oh, bunt belief. Bunt belief? Yeah, she's got a bunt belief.
But it feels like very Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Yeah, it does, doesn't it?
Yeah.
You know, something, something in the whatever.
Yep.
That kind of situation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. 20,000 et ceteras, you know?
Yes, all those things, correct, yes.
All of those ones, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
But are you excited about a lost kingdom?
No, not really.
Because, I mean, in the last one we got, you know,
a number of the well-known undersea kingdoms and we got, you know,
big fishmen and an octopus playing the drums.
There was a green fishman.
Yeah, green fishman, probably blue fishman.
I don't really, like in all of that movie, I didn't hate it,
but it just kind of blew past me.
Yeah, look, it's James Wan.
I like him and I like Jason Momoa.
And so, sure, why not?
Maybe it'll be more alien-esque.
That was what the trench was supposed to be.
Yeah, exactly.
Is the trench off the table completely now?
Yeah, they got rid of it.
Okay.
But there were a lot of things about that movie I did like.
I liked the fun explorer nature of it.
You like Pitbull's cover of Africa?
No.
Huh.
Well, then you're alone, my friend.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Feels good.
It's good to be alone sometimes, you know?
When I picture that movie, when they're flying through, I guess, Africa
or through the desert at the very least.
And then they're in Italy.
I honest to God picture Pitbull just in a suit spinning around on the dunes.
Like any time I think of that, I know he's not in it,
but I just, the song comes in and I just see him spinning around
with just his shiny head and his sunglasses just glinting in the desert sun.
Why wouldn't you just do the original song?
Because then you don't have Pitbull, do you?
Yeah, that's why you would.
Mr. Worldwide.
Yeah.
I'm not anti-Pitbull.
Whoa.
I mean, as a dog, they're a dangerous breed.
But him himself, he seems.
A dangerous breed.
In a way.
But in a sexy way.
No.
Indiana Jones stuff.
Here we go.
Oh, well, what are they going to do now that the Lost Kingdom has been taken?
Great question.
There'll probably be another one.
Sure, yeah.
There was Fate of Atlantis, wasn't there? You played that game? Yeah. So what did you have to do in that the Lost Kingdom has been taken? Great question. There'll probably be another one. Sure, yeah. There was Fate of Atlantis, wasn't there?
You played that game?
Yeah.
So what did you have to do in that?
Find Atlantis?
Yep.
And what was there when you got there?
Was there like a Lost Kingdom?
Was it empty?
Was you like, how much gold can I get out of here?
Oh, I didn't do it.
But I learnt a lesson.
Yes, that.
I can't remember.
I honestly can't remember at all.
Okay.
Tonight I'm going to go home and I'm going to look at a long play on YouTube probably.
Great, great, great.
Be like, huh, there wasn't anything there.
And he did lose everything, but he learned a lesson.
This game takes 59 minutes to complete if you know exactly what you're doing.
Yes.
Which a lot of those games actually did.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's apparently a 49-minute speed run of the game Control.
Oh, really?
And that's it.
I would have estimated that that would take days to finish.
I got turned around so much. Yep.
I put it down. I stopped playing it. I maybe lent
it to you. I've got it now. There you go.
So as for Indiana Jones
though, there's been a few on-set
photos showing up. Yeah. There's
old Indiana Jones in his young man clothes
which, by the way, terrible
look. I hope they're not doing
a lot of that. Well, here's the thing of that, and you may be leading towards this,
but some of those photos are old Indiana Jones,
young Indiana Jones clothes, tracking dots on his face.
Yes.
So that might be a flashback, the aging flashback.
Yes.
There's also old Indiana Jones with no tracking dots,
so it could be both.
But I just don't, again, I thought that was weird about Crystal Scar
where he's just in his pants and his slacks.
It's odd.
But speaking of flashbacks and such, there was a scene.
You think he should be in Cycling Lycra.
That's all that meant in that age.
Yeah, yeah.
Exactly.
He looks good though.
Did you see some of that?
Yep.
See the guns on that dude?
See the pipes on that dude?
He's out of control.
He's 78. Yeah. Crazy. And some of that? Yep. See the guns on that dude? See the pipes on that dude? He's out of control. He's 78.
Yeah.
Crazy.
And he's Hollywood rich.
He's Hollywood rich, exactly.
Not just regular rich.
Hollywood rich.
That's the physique of a man who got points off the top of Empire Strikes Back or whatever.
Yeah, absolutely.
So there's a stunt being filmed where there's a man in a young Harrison Ford rubber mask
riding a motorcycle in front of a train with a Nazi symbol on it.
It's like a World War II mission flashback.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Cool.
So Nazis are back.
Good, but just for this movie, not real life, just to clarify.
All right, all right, all right.
Don't clip that, anybody.
I mean, you wouldn't need to because there's plenty of, you know,
just clips from past episodes where you're saying exactly that.
That's a good point, actually.
But I like...
At this point, there's enough clips of us saying every word that exists.
Yes, that's true.
I mean, every word that we know.
So the thousand words that we know.
There's enough information from all our podcasts
and also the tech is available where you can build, like,
AI clips of people saying stuff and whatever.
No one would do that for us because why would you?
It's true.
But you can do it.
It's possible.
But I really like the idea of seeing some World War II missions.
I think the fact that they didn't make one of these in the 90s is a damn shame
because we didn't get any of that.
They stop in the late 30s and then they started up again in the 50s.
Yeah, that's true.
That's kind of a bummer.
I wonder because there were a lot of like somewhat canonical
Indiana Jones comics, you know, over the years.
And there's one set in England.
There's some.
Yeah.
I wonder if there are like they're going to draw from any of that.
Yeah.
To do a World War II era stuff.
There was going to be like a ghost Scottish castle one at one point.
Yeah, that's right.
And that got worked into Last Crusade, I think,
and a bunch of other stuff that ended up happening.
I looked up the cost of Young Indiana Jones.
I'm like, do I want to see this?
Because they're all canonical.
They're referenced in, one of them is referenced in Crystal Skull.
But, yeah, I think there's probably some good stuff in there.
I know it's a lot of edutainment and I looked up the Blu-rays
and it's like there's 14 hours of documentaries
about the historical era of the people that he passed.
I'm like, oh, why did you do that?
Nobody wants this.
I want to know why each episode costs like $5 million,
which it did at the time or whatever.
It's fascinating.
It's kind of like early Mandalorian shit, you know what I mean?
But, no, all this honestly looks good from what we've seen.
I like the direction that it's going in.
But again, the Nazi thing is only for this movie.
Sure, okay.
Just to clarify that.
Do you want Star Wars Newsmason?
Yes.
You got it.
But anyway, I hope he has a nice old man look is all I'm saying.
Yeah, that's what I mean.
Give him, update him.
You could put him in his professor clothes.
Give him professor clothes.
Professor cloth.
That's right.
Maybe he's got a colleague called Professor Cloth who speaks with a lisp in his English.
Sure.
Yeah.
Star Wars news though.
Go on.
For the series Andor, the playlist is reporting that Forrest Whitaker is back as whoever he played.
Yes.
The guy's like, leave me.
There's an explosion, but I won't make it.
I've had enough, I think.
It's time to reveal I'm British also.
That's what's happening here.
Go.
I don't have time to.
Back story.
Explain.
The other is the director saying that Ben Mendo Mendelsohn is coming back as Orson Krennic.
I mean, this is a Rogue One prequel
starring Cassian Andor, so
all of that, why not?
Terrific. If only we didn't know all these
people exploded. Sure did.
Very spectacularly. How did Krennic
die? The laser went through him.
Sure did, didn't it? How did Forrest Whitaker's
character die? The Death Star exploded the planet
and he got crushed by a rubble. Laser went through.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, yeah.
And Diego Luna was terrified on a beach as that white light engulfed him.
Yeah.
I like to point that out to people.
If you watch the scene where Diego Luna is about to be incinerated with gin air,
so you see his eyes widen as he's, like, just engulfed by a white hot fire.
And the enlargement of his eyes is probably due to the microwaving
of all the liquid in his eyes.
Exactly.
So, yeah, they're all dead.
They're all dead.
But it's the journey, not the destination.
Exactly.
I mean, when you know everybody's dead.
Yeah, we knew how the prequels were going to end
and yet we all loved them at the time.
Speaking of.
Go on.
The Book of Boba Fett has finished Boba Fetting.
It's coming out at the end of 2021, which I think we already knew,
but The Mandalorian hasn't yet started.
It's probably going to then, if it starts filming relatively soon,
it would have to be mid to end of 2022 before it can be done.
Interesting.
But between now and then we're going to have Andor,
Boba Fett and probably
Obi-Wan. So I don't think it's going to be
that big a deal to be honest. You think everybody's
going to be over Mando?
No, not over but I think there's stuff to fill that
gap. Oh yeah, definitely. Obi-Wan has started
and if you saw there were some set photos of that
where he's in his Jedi robe but they've
wrapped him in like a plastic bag
so you can't see his clothes.
But it's like, we know what this looks like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kid yourself.
Don't kid yourself, I said, to the set photos from just Jared.
You know those ones?
Yeah, I'm aware of just Jared.
They get everything.
Are they out there taking it or are they buying them?
They've got to be buying them.
They have to be, right?
Unless Jared is a real man, you know?
Yeah.
Maybe that's the origin, you know?
They're trying to film any, you know, they're on a closed set.
They're trying to, you know, some production.
They're trying to film something, you know, secret,
and then just like a door gets kicked in and a guy just starts, you know,
clicking away on his DSLR.
Who is that?
It's just Jared.
It's Jared again.
It's Jared.
You can't stop him.
This guy's a real pest.
You can't kill him either.
No.
He's famous. He's famous.
He's a murder's a crime.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I don't know if it was them, but it was somebody.
I know when I did some comic book movie stuff,
there was one particular site who used photos where if you uploaded
their photos to your site, even if you credited them,
they would sue you or threaten to sue you,
and then they'd get tens of thousands of dollars out of you because it's just cheaper than going through the court fees.
Yeah, right.
So a lot of the time now if you see the Just Jared photos, they'll embed the tweet link
as opposed to embed the photos themselves to circumvent that particular situation.
Okay.
I'm not saying Just Jared did that, but it sounds like something they would do if you
have to embed their photos.
Yeah, right.
Because if they're paying for them, who knows?
Some real dirty secrets of Just Jarrod over here.
I like bringing secrets to this pod, Mason,
and then telling everybody the secrets.
Wow, real Just James over here.
That's right.
I'm just going to spoil Loki episode two because I've seen it.
Here we go.
Here we go.
I wouldn't do that.
We did go to watch it again and they'd taken it off the screener,
didn't they? That's true, yeah. They took it down very
quickly. Variety reporting that
Jamila Jamil
from The Good Place is going to be
in She-Hulk. She's going to be playing
Titania. Titania?
I don't know. It's a villain. However you like.
Probably a big hulking woman or whatever.
Let me look it up. If it's the woman
I'm thinking of. Big hulking woman? She can Let me look it up. If it's the woman I'm thinking of.
Big hulking woman?
She can become giant sized.
But like a giant giant sized.
Like a giant.
Like 50 feet tall.
That's how big I am.
That's not true.
Oh, yeah, giant woman.
Nice.
Yep, I can see that.
That's cool.
Cool.
Is she a redhead in the comics?
Purple costume redhead?
Yes.
There we go.
Mason, you've done it.
Yes.
So she can even be bigger than She-Hulk, you're saying?
I mean, 50 feet.
Probably bigger.
That's bigger.
But can she, like, Ant-Man-like choose a size?
I think so, yes.
Or she got, like, preset settings?
Oh, like a radio.
Like a radio.
Like a digital radio.
The director also said that Sahar, who is Hulk's kid from World War Hulk,
is going to show up.
Oh.
So I don't know.
So that means he had kids when he was on the junk planet,
apparently, in this universe.
So there you go.
That's a rumour from the direct.
But don't sue me, the direct, because I'm mentioning you.
It's just James over here, all right?
It's just James.
Just settle down.
I'm just making a goal of it.
I'm just bringing secrets, all right?
But it's.
That is a defense in court for anything.
You stand here accused of murder.
I'm just making a go of it, all right?
I'm just bringing secrets.
And they'd be like, well, it is just James.
They established it as just James' defense.
Did you see the Nintendo court case that went through
we can talk about it
later on now
I'll mark it down for later
okay
we'll talk about it
in video game stuff
is this about Doug Bowser
it's a little
I mean he's related
Doug Bowser would be involved
wouldn't he
court case
here we go
I'll put it in for later
there's a bit of bloody sizzle
for your steak mate
I'll tell you that much
that's right
so yeah I guess
I mean I always thought
that was going to be
like a courtroom drama
but if like all of these big smashy people
are turning up, who knows, mate?
I mean, maybe it'll be more wacky like a Birdman.
Like a Birdman?
Like Harvey Birdman.
Do you want the heater on or are you okay?
Okay.
I can do it.
I can do it myself.
Yeah, that's what I meant.
You put the heater on.
I'll do it.
Son of a bitch, he's passing me that.
I mean, I'll do it.
I'm not happy about it.
Now, I've got to figure this out.
19 degrees, unlikely.
Now, that's good.
Is it? 19 is, like, a good temperature. Okay, then I've definitely set it for 19 degrees. I mean, I don do it. I'm not happy about it. Now I've got to figure this out. 19 degrees, unlikely. Now that's good. Is it?
19 is like a good temperature.
Okay, then I've definitely set it for 19 degrees.
I mean, I don't care.
I can live with it, but I'm just saying you are under it.
Yeah, that's right.
All right, here we go.
Yeah, I don't know.
I mean, at this point I still feel it's probably like some combination of courtroom drama.
Like imagine like the practice.
Yeah.
But then there's just a giant woman.
Do you reckon she's always going to be a giant woman though?
Because she is in the comics.
She's always a giant woman.
Is she?
Yeah.
She-Hulk is always She-Hulk, isn't she?
Oh, I was talking about Titania.
Oh, right.
No, I think she probably fluctuates on her settings.
Over the last few years, She-Hulk, whether she is-
Mason's dabbing.
No, James is dabbing.
Mason's dabbing.
No, James is dabbing.
Recently, She-Hulk has, in various comics,
regained the ability to become human again and back and forth and sometimes she's the savage She-Hulk and all sorts of different stuff.
So who knows what it will be this time.
It's expensive though, isn't it?
Yeah, that's true.
I read an article recently.
It was an interview with one of the people who's on Legends of Tomorrow
and he was basically like, oh, my character can, you know,
turn into light and do all this sort of stuff,
which is a real shame because I never get to do it.
Obviously because it's very expensive to do that effect.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like if I was just like I could shoot fire out of my hand or whatever,
like I could do that manually.
Yeah, well, that's true, yeah.
But because he's like he's got a very specific power, they're like.
Which character is that?
Light Man?
Look, I can't remember.
Turn into Lightboy. I can't remember the
actor and I cannot remember
the character. It was either the Ray
who could turn into Light or it
was like a guy who could turn into... It might have been
like a Living Steel kind of guy and that's
very expensive. So I think it might have been a Living Steel guy.
Is it played by one of the Amal boys?
Is there a third one we don't know about? Maybe, yeah.
Interesting to know about. Lord of the Rings. I don't know about? Maybe, yeah. Interesting to know about.
Lord of the Rings.
I don't know if you saw this.
The War of Rohirrim is going to be a Warner Brothers animated feature film.
It's set roughly 250 years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring
and follows the story of Helm Hammerhead.
Great name.
Hammerhead was once a legendary king of Rohan, in case you were wondering.
It's apparently not linked to the upcoming series,
but I think Philippa Boyan, who worked on Lord of the Rings, is attached.
You're on your own now.
Okay.
Hang on.
We got an email about this.
Oh, yeah.
It's from Philippa.
It says, I love Lord of the Rings, but I hate anime.
Ah.
Philippa Boyan's. I hate anime. Ah. Philip Aboyans.
There you go.
News broke this week of a confirmed movie titled The War for the Rah-rum.
Yeah.
I got so excited about it until I read the movie will be made via anime style.
Yeah.
No offense to people who like anime, but it's just not for me.
I'm the biggest fan of anime.
You're the guy who knows everything about anime.
Does it say specifically in an anime style, though?
Yeah, it is anime style.
Okay, right, right, okay.
Any thoughts on how I reconcile this movie's existence
and how do I go about changing their minds
and making this into literally any other art form?
Well, it's too late.
They've put too much money into it already.
Well, a lot of things are like anime styled but aren't strictly anime.
That's true.
So like Voltron, Legendary Defender, for example.
Last Airbender.
Last Airbender.
I mean, they're the same studios.
I think they're both DreamWorks.
Yeah.
So I wouldn't worry too much.
A lot of the, some of the DC animated movies attempt some moments of anime.
I guess my question is what about anime do you not like?
Do you like Batman Ninja, the anime?
Do I like it?
Was it an anime?
I think.
Or was it styled like such?
It was styled like such, yes.
Let me check.
What is the, I'm not even sure what the core difference between like a.
I think it's where it's made, isn't it?
I think that's the like the strict definition.
It's like the Champagne region of France.
Yeah.
Oh, that is actually a Japanese animated superhero movie.
So that one specifically is an anime, as I already knew.
I just looked it up for a joke.
I looked it up as a joke because I know everything about anime.
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You just do the little typey type thing.
Good joke.
It was a good, fun joke, yeah.
Thanks.
Yeah.
Does that mean, okay, so I guess my question here is then,
is this being done by an American animation studio?
I would say if it's Warner Brothers, then yes.
Okay, I would say so.
But not necessarily.
Yeah, I might.
Look, further question out there, why don't you like anime?
What's the?
Me, I love anime.
Not you, this guy. Phillip,
is it because of the
animation? Is it the 40 minutes of
screaming and one minute of not even
like a big lightning bolt? Yeah.
That's just your classic
Dragon Ball episodes. Well, if it helps,
this will not feature any lightning bolts.
No. Or screaming. Not that you
can say. Yeah.
But there's plenty happening.
Don't worry about that.
Speaking of anime, Master of the Universe got a trailer.
Yeah.
It's not anime.
It's animated.
It's animated, yeah.
That was a trick for all you non-anime fans out there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
James is a real weeb.
It's true. And so this is Kevin Smith's show ran episode, series.
It's got the I Need a Hero song playing in the background.
Yeah.
But I think it looks terrific.
I also think it looks terrific.
I think it looks amazing.
And it looks in the style of the show, like character design wise,
but it looks much better because that show is not good.
I feel it is one of those things where it is the designers
and the animators have gone into it going like,
what did the show feel like when we were kids?
What does it look?
As adults, we thought about it and we remembered the show.
What do we remember it looking like in our childlike minds?
Yeah, good.
What did our brains fill the gaps in?
It moved.
Yeah, exactly.
And then, you know, what did it feel like in our brains
before we went back and rewatched it and went,
oh, this isn't very good?
There's like four frames of animation in this.
And that's what it looks like.
It looks kind of, you know, very stylized but also very...
Fluid.
Very fluid, yeah.
I enjoyed one of my favorite things from the original series.
Go on.
First of all, how camp it is.
My goodness.
But second of all.
Except where they go to the Navy.
Yeah, that's right.
I mean, it's not just that one, but that one's probably the most obvious.
But all the different vehicles that show up that are just entirely impractical.
Like tank trades that turn like wheels.
Yes.
Or like just a big walking machine.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Just insane shit just showing up.
Like people are on hoverboards but they're backwards
and it's just crazy stuff.
There's one that's got a big metal dragon head.
Yeah.
And then the bottom half, that's the top half,
and the bottom half is like this weird treaded vehicle that like
it turns
180 degrees and then the head moves forward on it.
Oh, yeah.
And then the whole thing turns 180 degrees and then the head moves.
It's entirely.
Just put some wheels on it.
Yeah.
But they needed, you know, more grist for the action figures
and the vehicle line.
So that's what it was.
They were taking the piss, mate.
There's some crazy stuff.
Yeah, yeah.
Everybody had a He-Man or like just in your chest full of toys,
there was just four He-Men in there.
You've got a load of this guy with his chest full of toys.
Didn't you have like a box of toys?
Like a box?
I know I did.
That's true, yes.
It wasn't a chest.
It was just like a crate.
Yeah.
There we go, yeah.
It was a crate that had some nails in it at one point.
That's right.
And maybe they're still in there.
It was a stolen milk crate filled with nails.
Filled with nails.
Pretty much, yeah.
And I'd gotten a slightly sharper nail and I'd written Prince Adam
on one nail and, like, Skeletor on another nail.
Just went at it.
Yeah.
Also, Prince Adam and He-Man have different, like...
They look different.
They look different.
And they're different sizes.
As opposed to the original cartoon where obviously it was just different
colored underpants.
Yeah, that's right.
Anyway, that's fun.
It looks good.
Mark Hamill is Skeletor, which is cool.
Oh.
There you go.
We got a first look at Soldier Boy.
From the boys.
From the boys.
A Captain America-esque outfit.
Yep.
I was hoping it would be blue, but it's green.
I mean, it makes more sense that it would be green.
Yes, because of soldiering.
Because of soldiering about.
Yeah, I mean, it's a good costume, though.
What do you think?
Agreed, sure, yeah.
So in the comics, Soldier Boy.
I don't know if I have the answer, but I'll fake my way through it.
In the Boys, the comics, the Soldier Boy, the modern-day version,
is just a guy who wasn't in World War II,
but he's one of the many people who has become Soldier Boy.
I believe so, yes.
Or I think whoever leads the boys, what's his name,
Billy Butcher, just says that.
Yeah.
I don't even know if that's true.
But this version is the original celebrity superhero.
He's the first guy.
He's supposed to actually.
I mean maybe that will turn out to not be true or whatever
that's true yeah
that's what they're
that's the information
we've had about that character
at this point in time
that must be coming back
pretty soon yeah
should I double check that right now
please do James
let me just close
don't make anybody
including me do original research
alright
let me
so I didn't have to close the tab
I was looking up anime stuff
just so you know
as a joke as a joke yeah but I didn't have to close the tab. I was looking up anime stuff, just so you know. As a joke.
As a joke.
Yeah, but I didn't have to.
All right, Screen Rant, what do you got?
Oh, no, I'm not reading that.
Good Lord, Screen Rant.
Okay, Tech Radar.
I'll try this one.
Fourth article down.
It's coming along nicely.
Blah, blah, blah.
Cut to the chase.
When is it?
Third season.
When can I watch it?
A launch date is TBC, but don't be surprised if it doesn't arrive until 2022.
Thanks.
That's really helpful.
Thanks for nothing, TechRadar.
You've let us down yet again.
Every week with these fucking guys.
Every week with TechRadar.
We shouldn't give them any more chances, don't you think?
That's right.
Boycott TechRadar.
Every goddamn time.
So LA Times
have got some news. Some of these bloody
employed some bloody jamming techniques
on that bloody TechRadar, because otherwise
it's never working. You're not wrong.
He's not wrong, guys. Some electronic countermeasures
on that bloody TechRadar. Every week
he brings a new zinger so he can zing TechRadar
when they let us down.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I worked on that for a week.
I was like, I gotta
strive to the
powerful heights of a
pig rolling down a hill.
I don't know if it's just me.
And you rarely achieve it, but you're just...
Maybe I'm biased because it's my son, but that's the funniest thing
that's ever been on the show. I agree.
I'm probably wrong.
I mean, if it isn't, it's close, right?
Yeah.
And yet if we got him in here to do an episode wrong. No, I'm not. I mean, if it isn't, it's close, right? Yeah. Yeah. So.
And yet if we got him in here to do an episode, he'd clam up.
He wouldn't do it.
He wouldn't do it.
Yeah.
He's the dancing frog from Warner Brothers, do you know what I mean?
If it was now, it'd be the dabbing frog, which you would like.
I would like it.
I agree.
I'm going with this one.
I'm going with this one. Oh, I didn't write this down.
Space Jam trailer.
Did you see it? I didn't watch it. Absolute nonsense. I'm going with this one. Oh, I didn't write this down. Space Jam trailer. Did you see it?
I didn't watch it.
Absolute nonsense.
In what way?
It just looks bad, but I'm going to watch it and love it.
Look, all I know is I saw some people in the Planet Broadcasting Great Mates Facebook group
say it looks better than the previous trailer.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's probably true.
It's not for me.
I'm going to watch it.
Okay.
And they're like, they get three day or whatever.
Nice.
I think it will be better than the last one.
Okay. There you go. I'll say will be better than the last one. Okay.
There you go.
I'll say that.
Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
LA Times is saying that the Blue Beetle movie is coming directly
to HBO Max along with Batgirl, which is kind of disappointing.
You want to see a cinema release?
At least the option of, I reckon.
I wonder if we're getting all the Blue Beetles in it.
By that I mean the previous Blue Beetle and the new Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle-a-thon.
So he's kind of like a, what's he the equivalent of?
Who are we talking about?
Blue Beetle.
The modern, the current one.
Yeah, Ted Kord.
Is he the original?
Well, there was one.
I don't think they're doing the Ted Kord one.
I think they're doing the second one.
They're doing Jaime Reyes.
Yes, that's right.
But there's a Blue Beetle prior to Ted Kord, I think,
that maybe was before DC acquired that character. Like there's another. Oh, okay. Yes, that's right. But there's a Blue Beetle prior to Ted Kord, I think, that maybe was before DC acquired that character.
Like there's another.
Oh, okay, yeah, of course.
That's why Watchmen has two night owls.
Yes, the horse mason and the other one.
And the other one, yeah, yeah.
So Ted Kord is the other one.
Yes, because Watchmen, for those people who don't know,
if you're strictly an anime fan,
they wanted to use a bunch of minor DC characters and they couldn't,
including Blue Beetle, including Dr. Question Mark Face.
Yes, that's right.
Including others.
How can you both, James, you be both the guy who knows everything about anime and the guy who knows everything about acquired DC characters?
It's his passion.
Yeah, I guess it is passion.
He's got to follow your passion.
One day I'll have such a passion.
That's right, yeah.
Here we go.
So, yeah, I don't know.
The fascinating thing about that, James, side note,
the fascinating thing about DC's acquisition of those characters
from Charlton Comics and that Alan Moore wanted to put them in Watchmen
is they're like –
And wreck them.
Well, wreck.
They're like, no, we don't want to do that because we want these characters
to be kind of continuously in use.
And iconic and whatever.
But, I mean, what have they done with them?
Exactly.
Jack shit.
Like, Peacemaker's going to be, Peacemaker who became the comedian
is going to be in the Suicide Squad.
But prior to that, nothing.
Nothing for 40 years.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
Insane.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't disagree.
Well, it's good that they are doing stuff with them now, I guess.
That's true.
But I feel like Blue Beetle has the potential to, like, be like, I mean,
like an Ant-Man or even like a Spider-Man.
Like, he's a very, like, specific and, you know, he's got a unique kind of.
And it's a very unique look.
Yeah.
You know, which, you know, hopefully they can do something interesting with.
Like, give us a more interesting morphing than we got with Martian Manhunter in the last thing.
What can you morph into?
Different weapons?
Just guns and stuff.
Yeah, different weapons.
Yeah, different weapons.
The dog's at the door.
I'm going to go let the dog in.
Okay, cool.
Maybe we'll let some of the heat out of this room
that you've fucking trapped us in.
Fine, I'll change it.
You hotboxed us, Mason.
But in the literal sense, not in the weed-smoking sense.
Here we are.
There she is. Here you are. There she is.
There you are.
And immediately leaves again.
Unbelievable.
Oh, no, wait.
She's back.
There we go.
Just likes to be among it.
Yeah, that's true.
Do you ever play Among Us, the game?
No, never played it.
Wow.
Well, I know everything about it.
Go on.
No, I don't.
I don't know anything about it.
Okay.
Something about murders or whatever?
It seems fun, yeah.
Yeah, it does seem fun.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Some people have said you should play it, and maybe we will now that nobody's talking about it. Okay. Something about murders or whatever? Seems fun, yeah. Yeah, it does seem fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Some people have said you should play it,
and maybe we will now that nobody's talking about it.
That's right.
That's what we want to hop on a cold trend, you know?
Hop, hop.
Yeah.
That's what we say.
The Jurassic World Dominion, did you hear about this?
No, go on.
It's going to be a five-minute extended preview for Fast 9,
which might only be in IMAX or whatever.
So if we watch Jurassic World, the new one,
we will get a five-minute preview for Fast 9 before it.
And maybe it's only in IMAX or not.
Okay, great.
Apparently...
Seems like a real roll of the dice.
From the footage description, if you don't mind.
No, please.
It's going to show the origin of the T-Rex
and the mosquito that gets trapped that takes its blood,
which might be the John Hammond one.
I don't know.
So you see the T-Rex fly. What a weird start for Fast 9.
Whoa, he's done it again.
Yes.
And we're both dabbing now.
I'm with him.
Because it was so great.
Yeah, good work, everybody.
It's going to, so the origin of the T-Rex,
because it's going to, we've never seen dinosaurs in the past.
Yep, Great.
No, like, because Jurassic Park is exclusively set in like the modern day, right?
Mostly.
I mean, not Jurassic Park 1.
That's set in like the 90s, man.
Yes, Mason.
But you need, oh, no way.
You're right.
But this is going to be set 65 million years in the past and it fights an even bigger dinosaur
and it's killed.
The mosquito takes its blood.
Then that dinosaur is recreated in the modern time where it's being chased through an outdoor theatre by helicopters.
So that's the original T-Rex from the 1993 movie of the name Jurassic Park.
Okay.
So there you go.
What do you think?
Yeah, it sounds fun.
I enjoyed that short that they put out.
I think they're going to do interesting stuff with it.
I hope they will at least.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But, I mean, it does just have a touch of, you know,
we've got to know the origin of everything in a movie vibe.
You know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
It's like, where'd that mosquito come from?
Where did it come from?
We've got to see its origin.
That's a good point.
He makes good points.
Yeah.
Do you think the T-Rex and the mosquito are going to have some sort of rivalry
in the past and that's why?
Like a gun, like a shootout.
Yeah, like a shootout, yes.
Yes, I do think that.
Great.
Got some Jupiter's Legacy news. the gift that keeps on giving.
Now, we know that the cost of this show blew out to $200 million.
That we know already.
You better believe it, Mason.
This article is via The Hollywood Reporter.
I was going to take notes, but I'm just going to read a lot of this
because they've done a pretty good job.
Why wouldn't I?
But I suggest you read it.
So the show seems to be a victim.
So it cost $200 million.
It got low Rotten Tomatoes scores.
People genuinely didn't like it.
We thought it was okay and got stronger,
and then they cancelled it before they did most of the comics.
That's right.
But it's also getting a spin-off in Super Crooks,
but they cancelled season two and released all the cast, et cetera, probably.
That's right.
The show seems to be the victim of several factors, some of its own making, some not,
and illustrates the birthing pain of building from a highly publicized acquisition, because
they, of course, bought Miller World, which has a bunch of Mark Miller properties, including
this, obviously.
The series was plagued with issues from the start, with then-showrunner Stephen DeKnight
initially asking Netflix for a budget of at least $12 million per episode, according to sources.
The stream, however, backed down to under $9 million.
So he worked on, he did Spartacus.
He did Daredevil season one, two, I think.
Smallville.
He did some of Smallville, yeah.
He's done like genuine, like he knows what he's talking about, right?
It wasn't long into shooting that the show found itself over budget
and running behind with DeKnight. never wanted to shy away from speaking his mind
according to people who have worked with him clashing with netflix over creative differences
the production was shut down about halfway through its eight episode shoot tonight was replaced by
sang kyu kim who uh then had to retool the first batch of episodes. Issues didn't stop there, however, as even after wrapping production,
the show spent an inordinate amount of 2020 in post-production.
Louis Lettier, who you might know from The Incredible Hulk,
I think he did some of the Transporter movies.
Okay.
He's also behind Netflix's acclaimed Dark Crystal and Lupin series,
neither of which I have seen.
Have you seen any of those?
I am going to get to Lupin.
What are you worried about? I'd rather love Dark Crystal as well. I just got an email from Netflix and Lupin series, neither of which I have seen. Have you seen any of those? I am going to get to Lupin. Don't you worry about it.
I'd rather love Dark Crystal as well.
I just got an email from Netflix and they're like,
just to remind us, season two of Lupin is out and you can watch it.
Have you watched season one?
Nope.
Wow.
I mean, they should have sent you that email.
I know, right?
He was brought in the 11th hour as a consultant, according to sources,
but the move was too late to save the troubled show.
With episode spins now reaching above what DeKnight originally asked for,
show insiders say he was proven right in some respects.
Marvel shows are $15 million to $20 million per episode,
notes one producer working in the comic book space.
If you're going to make a big budget superhero show,
you need at least half that much.
It's unclear in what range the final budget landed,
and Netflix insider pegged it closer to $130,000,
though because of shutting down in post-production,
they reckon it's probably upwards of $200 million.
To compound problems, Netflix then underwent an executive shuffle
that saw Jupiter's Greenleaf VP original content, Sydney Holland,
and its two executive overseers exit the company.
So unless the show was an undisputed hit, it's going to fall under the microscope, said
one Jupiter insider.
So anyway, it was underperformed.
It cancelled.
It had some views, but not enough.
Yeah.
So now it's a bit of a worry because they've kicked off this cinematic universe, but it's
on very shaky ground.
Very shaky ground, yeah.
So, you know, they can't be like from the minds of Jupiter's legacy
because people will be like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, like, again, I think we talked about it maybe last week,
you know, you put all the money in at the start and you go, you know,
hope that this gets such a big push that you can just be like,
remember the last good one?
Well, here's the next one and you're going to love it too.
But this did not scratch a lot of people's superhero itch, honestly.
No.
I think there is, I don't know if it's in that article,
but I think I saw a quote from somebody at Netflix and was like,
we still 100% believe in Miller World and we're going to really,
it's not going to change anything.
But I reckon they got one more shot.
I think they restarted the order, the magic one,
because I think that cancelled and now they might have to bring it back.
They're doing super crooks.
What's the other one?
Maybe it's superior.
I can't remember.
Anyway, I think they own them, so they're just going to keep taking it right.
I guess that's true, yeah.
Sure.
That's what I would do if they bought it for tens of millions of dollars
if not more.
That's what I would do if they bought it for tens of millions of dollars if not more.
But if they're, you know, surely there's like a sunk cost point
at which you just go, let's not waste any more money.
Not that I'm saying that's going to happen.
Yeah.
But they could jettison them back to Miller.
Yeah.
I guess if they really want to.
You go to Amazon Prime.
Exactly.
You go to Tubi.
Yeah, Tubi.
That'd be fun, I think. What's that? You could restart Quibi. You've got a Tubi. Yeah, Tubi. That'd be fun, I think.
What's that?
You could restart Quibi.
You could.
I think it would be like if you're Mark Miller,
you would be frustrated because this is,
he's always said that like he wants to be the next Marvel.
He wants to build his own cinematic universe. That's why he made Miller World in the first place to make this,
like, you know,
and he's done a really good job of making high-profile independent comics.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And now, and like, and then they release something like this,
which doesn't land.
It would be like, ugh.
Yeah.
You know, anyway, I thought it was all right.
And obviously he's, you know, he's happy with people changing, you know,
elements of the source material.
But he's not happy with moving out of landscape mode.
And that's the mistake he made.
That is the line that he draws.
Just bring back Quibi is all I'm saying.
I agree.
It's still on my phone.
I haven't deleted the app.
I never used it, but I just can't.
It's still there.
I can't delete it.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah, just a little piece of memory, you know.
I agree.
That's the Quibi era.
Hello, folks.
We're here in partnership with NOW to talk about The Nevers, the new show that's ready
to take the world by storm.
James, you and I, we've really been enjoying it.
And let me tell you, The Nevers is the next big thing.
For those who haven't seen or heard, The Nevers is a one-of-a-kind thrilling drama that focuses
on a tight-knit group of badass outcasts, an unlikely group of heroes who are fighting
for their place in the world.
Featuring names such as Olivia Williams,
James Norton, Nick Frost
and Eleanor Tomlinson,
the cast is simply stacked and what's more
the well of enthralling characters
runs deep. Whether it's Penance
Adair, the brilliant young and rather mysterious
inventor, or Primrose Chatoa,
a ten-foot teen with some special
powers that'll make you say whoa
that's so tall if you're looking for badass girls staking a claim for their place in the world this
is the show for you i agree with you across the board streaming nevers on now was a real highlight
of my week i'll tell you what though what i love about the nevers is the victorian setting and this
isn't like a standard period drama. This is a mystical, badass Victorian
England and it's beset by this
group called the Touched. The Touched are
a collection of mostly women who suddenly
manifest unique abilities, some
charming and some very disturbing.
Oh, and as the new underclass
of Victorian era London, the Touched
must gang together to stay one step ahead of their
ruthless enemies in this rapidly changing
and revolutionary world of steam and steel.
There's war, violence, hatred and strife.
The future of mankind is at stake and this unlikely group of heroes are here to fight
for a better world.
Mason, I'm going to give you a list of things and you're going to tell me whether or not.
I'm going to go with you.
We're going to do this together, whether we both agree that these are things that we like
about the show.
Are you ready for this?
I'm rumped.
Go with it.
The Nevers is an ambitious mix of fantasy and action
meets period drama?
Question mark?
I'm loving that.
Female-driven with a calibre of British talent?
I love seeing talented young British folks on the telly.
Look at this cast.
How about this one?
Might be a bit spooky for you, but I'll check.
Dark and edgy vibes.
I can get used to it.
That's okay, though.
Yeah, no, yeah, yeah.
Layered but accessible.
That's very true.
Complex, but do you know what I mean?
Not too complex.
Do you know what I mean? too complex do you know what I mean
you can come at it
you can come at it
you can come right at it
diverse, inclusive and groundbreaking
and it's funny
and it's funny
what I was going to say
humorous and witty
that's right
also I feel like it does a really good job
of commenting on current themes
in a way that's not too on the nose
the stakes are high
and overall if I had to sum it up
if I had to sum it up Mason
I'd say these two words
I'd say the words
very exciting what do you think of that? I love it up, if I had to sum it up, Mason, I'd say these two words. I'd say the words, very exciting.
What do you think of that?
I love it.
Great.
Thank you for listening to this segment today brought to you in partnership
with NOW, where you can stream every episode of The Nevers.
I promise you, you'll be engrossed and recommending it to friends
before you know it.
On with the show.
Let's do it.
Do you want to talk about now some of that E3 magic?
Yes.
People are saying it's an okay show and whatever.
From the announcements.
Our podcast?
Yeah.
It's an okay show and whatever.
I should say there might be a Guardians of the Galaxy reveal
that's happening that we haven't seen at the time.
In terms of games or movies?
It's going to be apparently a single player experience
and not whatever they did with the Avengers, Square Enix.
Okay.
Good.
Good call, yeah.
Nintendo are doing their showcase,
which will probably be the next Breath of the Wild.
They might announce another.
I'd love to see a Star Fox.
Oh, yeah, sure.
It's been a long time.
Even if they take that one that was on the Wii U, which is terrible,
but, like, repurpose the controls for Switch, I'll take that.
I think those games are so good, especially the 64 one.
Did you say there was some sort of Nintendo controversy?
Did you mention that?
Yeah.
So basically a guy, he had a ROM site, right?
Yep.
Where he would basically upload all the Nintendo ROMs.
No, sorry.
He claimed that he didn't upload them but they were, you know,
it's a place where people could go and then download Nintendo ROMs, right?
So like old NES stuff. and super nintendo stuff so stuff that isn't for sale
anymore yes and some of it is but the thinking behind it and i like in terms of like what
nintendo are doing you're just asking for stuff like this to happen because you're not making
these things available you could provide you could literally upload everything that you own.
Some of the, I think like Goldeneye, there's some licensing stuff and there's
some business, but most of it they own outright.
It'd have to be James Bond.
Exactly.
So you could do that.
Just generic spy faces all over the place.
There's plenty of those games.
But, and you make it easily accessible.
It's like with iTunes, It's like with Netflix.
If you make it accessible, people will pay for it.
Yes.
But they haven't been doing that.
They've got that Nintendo Live thing, which I actually have,
where every month they release like three or four new old games.
It's like you could upload everything at once if you wanted to.
Yeah, I mean I would say that that would be the – that's what people want
and that's what people are going to do unless you do that.
But I imagine their logic is, you know, every once in a while
they want to release one of those Nintendo Minis
or they want to release some sort of little portable thing
and they want to be like, okay, we want to give people 10 games
or 20 games that they don't already have.
But if it's all out there on a ROM site, then people aren't going to buy it.
But I think people would still do it.
I think like the Nintendo Mini still sold like crazy.
I think the idea behind that was it was also old Wii parts
that they had left.
So it was like let's just put this in a box and sell it to idiots
or whatever.
The fascinating thing to me about the Nintendo Mini and the SNES Mini
and all those things is that they don't have interchangeable cartridges.
Yeah, exactly.
Or downloadable options.
But I think like it fascinates me that they don't just go like every six months go,
here's 20 more games and a little cartridge and then they sell like hotcakes.
Exactly.
It's wild.
Again, I think it was just a get rid of parts thing.
And they like to create a false scarcity for their products intentionally.
It's the same with like the PS5.
We actually got a tweet this week.
I might as well bring it up now.
Why not, Mason?
But anyway, what is the controversy around this?
I'll just quickly say blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
You know what I mean?
Great tweet.
Love it.
Oh, Ken asked, do you have a PS5 or PS4?
I know you mentioned you own one on the show.
Also, keep up the great work.
That's from Carlo Belton.
We both have PS4s, right?
We both have PS4s.
I can't get a PS5 at the moment.
They're still unavailable in Australia?
No.
And, I mean, they are.
FX's The Veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship
between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies
on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London.
One woman has a secret.
The other, a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives
are lost. FX's The Veil, starring Elizabeth Moss, is now streaming on Disney+.
Ah, but you gotta, you can't get them. You gotta expend some effort. Yeah. And I don't think
there's enough on them at the moment. Yeah, right. And also, I don't like to buy like the first
iteration of anything. I'll get like the next one.
When any overheating issues and whatever are taken care of, yeah.
That's it.
But so anyway, they took this guy to court who owned this website
and he decided not to hire any lawyers and do it himself.
And a lot of his defense was, oh, I didn't upload any of these myself.
I don't technically own them, which is not true.
They found out that he had done that and it was very transparent that he did.
Yeah.
They also, he also was charging people for memberships.
Oh, sure, yeah.
And it was revealed that something like he'd only made, well, not only,
he made $30,000 but he has to pay Nintendo like $9 million
because he just went in with no game plan.
Wow.
And again, I think these things should be available.
I understand why people pirate them, but you're an idiot.
What are you doing?
Don't even do that anonymously.
Like if you want to provide that service, you could.
That's true.
Yeah.
And yeah, like I guess if he said, well, I never take any money
and I do this.
Yeah.
Like if that were true, there might be like,
okay, we'll just shut it down and don't do it again or whatever.
If it was like – I guess if it was like a BitTorrent kind of thing where you provide
the service but you don't have any of the software and you don't take any money, then
I guess, yeah, like you said, it might be okay.
But even then, they'd probably still get you.
Yeah.
But not if you – I mean especially if it's just you being like, I didn't do it.
Sure. I wonder if you consider the just mean, especially if it's just you being like, I didn't do it. Sure.
I wonder if he considered the just James defense.
But then they'd be like, oh, your license says,
your name is Philip Donovan.
Just Philip Donovan over here, folks.
Just being the best Philip Donovan I can be,
just trying to do my best.
So that guy's, I don't know what he, you can't play that.
Did he just host Nintendo stuff or was it everything?
It was probably everything, I'd imagine.
I don't know.
I didn't look into it.
You could still get them.
They're everywhere.
That's true, yeah.
No problem.
I think I once bought one of those little, like, it was like a Mega Drive Genesis.
Oh, yeah.
Like a tiny little portable handheld thing.
And I think you could just download 900 Genesis games and put them on an SD card and it was
just around everything.
I've got a ROM thing that plays literally everything.
And there's – what else is there?
You know what?
The one Nintendo thing that I do like is that –
You've got a Raspberry Pi situation?
I do, yeah.
I haven't used it in ages.
We used to use it more for Caravan of Garbage.
But that plays like PlayStation.
It plays everything.
Yeah, yeah.
Or it doesn't.
I'm just James up here.
Just James and you all. We here. James and you all.
We're just James and you all.
Don't worry about it.
But, yeah, I like the Nintendo, the Game & Watch that they released.
It has the original Super Mario on it and Super Mario 2.
Oh, the Japanese version.
The Lost Levels one.
Yeah, yeah.
And it's the original, like it looks like the old Game & Watch
that they used to sell in the 80s.
Yeah, right, right, right.
I think I've seen that, yeah.
Yeah, I think I'm actually going to get one of those
because I think they're kind of cool.
I was going to say, I wonder if, like, Nintendo's strategy here
or, you know, almost any, like, retro game publisher's strategy
is you've got to get this off the internet,
this stuff off the internet, because a lot of it doesn't hold,
like, a lot of it is, a lot of these games
are five minutes worth of entertainment.
Yeah.
And I think, like, I think getting, again, getting, you know,
the ability to download a thousand games at a time sort of strips them
away of their, the value proposition.
Because a lot of the time when you get a thousand games, you're like,
oh, how's this one play?
You play for two minutes and then you're like, oh,
what's the next one, blah, blah, blah.
And then 20 games in, you're like, that was fun yeah and you just stop playing them entirely
whenever i go back it's like i'll play the mario donkey kong like a star fox and everything else
like i guess maybe a bomber man or whatever sure yeah but all of those like obscure or not even
just like lesser known nintendo titles i'm just not really interested in. Will they ever play Boogerman again?
Probably not.
Which one was Boogerman?
He had like flick boogers.
It was like a platformer.
Nice.
Well, you can play that in real life.
That's true.
That's true.
I mean, there's some stuff, again, that is still sort of holds up
ahead of its time.
The original Metal Gear is really good.
Yeah, totally.
But, yeah, a lot of that stuff is five minutes worth of entertainment,
and I wonder if it's Mario taking it down And I wonder if it's Mario taking it down.
I wonder if it's Nintendo taking it down.
Mario's not doing it.
Could be.
Just because they're like, you know,
people aren't going to buy a Super NES Mini with 20 games
if they've already skimmed them and they know that 18 of them are very bad.
Those things always sell, though.
I don't even think it's about the games.
No, that's true.
The collectors.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, you can even get, I occasionally get Facebook ads,
but just like, it's just a model SNES.
Yeah.
It doesn't do anything.
It just sits on your desk.
They did make an SNES one, didn't they?
They did, yeah.
And I don't think, I think they're not doing a 64 one,
or they don't have immediate plans.
What system would you get a? I would get a 64 one. How about't have immediate plans. What system would you get a?
I would get a 64 one.
How about a non-Nintendo thing?
Would you get a?
Apparently they're not great.
Like the PlayStation 1 one isn't great.
Okay.
I have a PSU so I don't.
I would get maybe a portable Neo Geo.
Oh, yeah, you can get those, can't you?
Probably.
Or at least knockoff ones at least.
Yeah.
I would love to get one of those arcade one-up cabinets.
Yep.
Because they recently announced the Ninja Turtles one
that's got like Turtles Through Time or whatever it's called
and whatever and the Manhattan something, something.
There's also a new Turtles beat-em-up coming out this year.
I don't know if you saw it.
It's coming out to Switch, which I'll definitely get.
Yeah.
Anyway, let's talk about more things.
Okay.
I was going to say I recently saw somebody on Instagram
who bought like a little cabinet. Check more things. Okay. I was going to say, I recently saw somebody on Instagram who bought like a little cabinet.
Check this out.
Yeah.
It's a company called Arcade 1-Up Official.
Yeah.
And it's like you assemble it like Ikea style.
Yeah.
It comes in a flat pack.
Yeah, right.
That's pretty cool.
What's it got on it?
This one has Golden Axe on it.
Boo.
Okay, great.
Golden Axe is all right. Yeah. Golden Axe is all right.
Yeah, Golden Axe is all right.
Yeah.
I just remember being blown away that you could get like Street Fighter
on a Super Nintendo or whatever.
Yeah.
Like you could get Street Fighter at home.
It's nuts.
And remains nuts to this day.
I don't understand it and I never will.
Did you see the Gearbox conference?
No, who at Gearbox again?
Gearbox do like Borderlands.
Oh, I saw Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Something, something, yeah.box again? Gearbox do like Borderlands. Their CEO.
Oh, I saw Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Something, something, yeah.
Which is like a fantasy version of Borderlands.
Their CEO, founder Randy Pitchford, who's a real,
he's just a guy making a go of it.
You know what I mean?
You mean he's a.
Sucks, yeah.
He sucks.
Well, his name's Randy.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, that's not, yeah.
Anyway, because they're making.
Sorry to the Randys out there.
Because they're making the Borderlands movie and it's got, like,
Jack Black and Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart or whatever.
There's, like, so I couldn't even watch it.
It was him because he's the boss going through and being like,
I can't believe I'm making Borderlands and now I'm talking to director
Eli Roth and now I'm doing this.
And it was just really awkward and boring and they didn't show anything.
It's like you don't even want to show, like,
what they look like
in their outfits or some vehicles or weapons.
And so I think it's just a case of like he's in charge
and people just were like, I guess he wants to do this thing.
Like he's like this guy, one of the guys, like he's a real showman
but he's like he's not good at it.
Okay.
So he's more like bluster than.
He's like P.T. Barnum but he's got all the smarm but none of the.
Yeah, I would say that's probably accurate.
Being the greatest showman.
He's just like if you just looked up Randy Pitchford controversies
or just is an idiot.
Okay.
You'd find some things.
He's the Neo Geo mini jams.
Look at that.
That's rad, Mason.
It's rad but it's also like a.
Is it too mini?
With the sticks?
I don't like the idea of those arcade little sticks.
Yeah. Because then you're playing like this.
Exactly.
Like a mouse.
Maybe you can plug it in.
Good for a mouse mason.
Yeah, I mean, maybe you can plug it into your TV,
but then you're just holding a tiny arcade cabinet while you're playing.
Good for a mouse maybe.
All right, good for a mouse, yes.
I've got a joke for you, James.
It'll be good for a mouse.
What do you reckon about that?
That's good.
Anyway, I'm just going to do a dab.
That's good.
Well earned, if you don't mind me saying.
But that would be better as like a Switch-style thing, right?
Yeah, I think so, yeah.
Like sized.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
As opposed to a little arcade cabinet.
Anyway, do you want to talk about Elden Ring?
Yeah.
Explain the world of Elden Ring to me.
Well, Elden Ring, James, is a game from.
From?
Ring-a-ding-ding, let's talk Elden Ring.
Oh, we're finally bringing back this segment. Ring-a-ding-ding, let's talk Elden Ring. Oh, we're finally bringing back this segment.
Ring-a-ding-ding, let's bring back Elden Ring.
So it's from From Software, a company that makes,
has made a series of kind of third-person action sort
of hack-and-slash games that are very difficult.
EG, for example.
For example, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3, and Bloodborne.
And the one where you've got a whip rope and you're whipping around
and you fight a big snake?
That's Bloodborne.
No, there's another one where you're like a ninja guy.
And you're whipping around with a big snake.
Yeah.
No, you fight a snake.
I'll find it.
Is it Ninja Gaiden?
No, it's not that.
Oh, okay, right.
Anyway, well, they're not difficult.
I mean, they are difficult, but they're sort of a very, it's a very specific type of gameplay.
It's all about timing.
Yes.
And.
Dodging.
Timing, yeah, dodging and rolling and saving up.
Sekiro, Shadows Die Twice.
There we go, yes.
That's the one.
So it's all about timing and dodging and factoring in the time you need
to swing your sword.
It's not just like a hammer the buttons.
It's a big heavy sword, isn't it?
Yeah, it's often a big heavy sword.
They did Metal Wolf.
I've only played Bloodborne, which I enjoy, but I'm terrible at.
How far did you get in that?
Impossible to say.
Wow, so not very far.
Many hours in, but how much progress?
Don't know.
But anyway, they're producing a game with the design input
from George R. R. Martin of Game of Thrones fame.
Is this in its own universe?
I think it is separate from the Dark Souls and Demon's Souls
and all those ones.
Some complaints of this is that it looks last gen.
Oh, see, I don't know.
Yeah, well, for me.
I'm very much last gen.
Yeah, same, so I don't care.
But I think for me, graphics aren't that important.
Gameplay is.
I think gameplay is important. Call me a traditional important traditional and ideas are important as well and what what fascinates me is the extent to
which i'm like the the fantasy tropes have been so well set in that any kind of novelty outside
of that realm i'm like wow yeah like i watched the trailer for this and i'm like that dragon
has two pairs of wings wow this is madnessetries off the chain. Yeah, right?
It kind of had that
die kind of vibe.
The comic book die.
Because you're a dead
soldier man or something. And you might
get more life. In these games you're almost always
dead. You're a dead thing.
But you get more life
because your hair's redder in later parts of the
trailer. It also looks more accessible to me than some of these other ones.
I don't know whether that's.
I think it's more open-worldy as well.
Oh, yeah, right.
Like Dark Souls and, well, Dark Souls especially,
they are big worlds but they're all very kind of dank, dungeon-y.
You're trapped underground.
It's kind of claustrophobic.
And you don't get lost.
It's like you go one direction.
Yeah, the pathfinding is all sort of done with you.
But this seems to be more like a huge scope.
It looks good.
I agree.
Probably too difficult for me, but I'll give it a whirl.
He's going to give it a go, everybody.
Another big announcement, because there's been a bunch of other stuff,
but nothing that really stood out.
There was Nintendo Rabbids.
I should play that Rabbids game.
Mario V. Rabbids.
Yeah, exactly.
Who are the Rabbids?
Where have they come from?
They're an Ubisoft thing.
Oh, so this isn't an original Nintendo product.
No, they've just got that.
But they weren't something else first.
They weren't like a collectible card game or a...
Maybe.
They're in a something and then they're spun off into something.
Okay.
But Ubisoft, this game is one of the only few times that Nintendo has, like,
lent out its characters recently because they used to do it a bit more,
but now they're very like.
And so it's like it's an XCOM style game or whatever.
Anyway, Avatar, I can't remember what it's called.
Remember Avatar, the game.
Let's call it that.
Okay, great.
Which is basically Avatar reminding you that there's more Avatar movies
coming out.
Sick.
It's by the people who made The Division.
Okay.
And it's a first-person kind of open world.
You're flying around on your birds.
Ubisoft, The Division is Ubisoft as well, right?
Yes.
So you're flying around on your birds and your big Avatar birds
and you're shooting arrows.
You probably can, it's probably, I'd imagine if it's anything like The Vision,
it's like an ongoing live service and maybe you can upgrade your feathered arrows
to slightly different feathered arrows.
Yes.
So I'm not ruling this out because, look, man, Pandora's coming back
and we all need to get used to that, all right?
That's right, yeah.
We have no choice.
It's been 12 years now since the last one.
They've started the machine up and it's not going to stop.
So that's coming – I think they said next year,
and then we're going to get an Avatar movie,
and then Avatar movies every two years until James Cameron dies
at the bottom of the ocean or whatever happens to him.
So, yeah, gear up.
Which he won't because he'll never die.
He will strangle that squid that's trying to kill him
at the bottom of the ocean.
He'll use his rich person abilities to shoot lasers, which they can.
They get that installed.
It's one of the first things you do when you become a billionaire, isn't it?
Why wouldn't you?
So, yeah, exactly.
But there was an Avatar game.
I don't know if you remember this.
Was it an endless runner?
No, it was a tie-in movie game that had its own kind of story.
I think you could play as the mechs and the whatever,
and apparently it was fine.
So check it out.
Could you play as?
Jake Sully.
I was going to say Sam Wellington, but then I'm like,
is that the actor's name?
Yes.
Terrific.
Let me check.
So there's a YouTuber that I really enjoy.
He looks at a lot of, like, movie-based titles.
It's not the only thing that he does.
He's called Mini Me, as in M-I-N-I-M-M-E.
Oh.
And he's got a video called James Cameron's Avatars,
a weirdly ambitious game.
Okay.
So it's well worth checking out.
He's a great YouTuber and he's Australian.
I don't, I don't, I've never met him, but I'm one of his Patreons.
Whoa.
Like his work.
Yeah, he's got a whole thing about that particular game that you can check out.
I'm just picturing messages, like Patreon messages from you to this guy.
Like, hey, it's me, MrSandoMovies.
We've never met.
But I love your work.
I love this.
I mentioned your show, but you didn't say anything.
I took that personally.
Just let him do his thing.
I don't try to bother anyone.
Do you have any other games that you do want to talk about?
Because I didn't get a lot from this, to be honest.
Yeah, no, it wasn't.
There was some indie stuff that I thought was cool and whatever,
but, you know, PlayStation's not going to be there.
But, again, we haven't seen everything.
No, because the Bethesda showcase is tonight, I think.
But that's also exclusively Xbox and I don't have an Xbox.
Ah, yes, no need to lie.
Mostly.
Oh, because it's Microsoft now, right?
Yeah, but that being said, if the next Xbox ends up getting better games,
I'll just get that instead.
Yes.
I won't get both, but I'll.
Ooh, E3 2021, everything you need to know about the biggest event
in the gaming world from Channel 9 News.
Let's click and see what.
What does Peter Hitchener think?
I was going to say, what does Peter Hitchener think?
Could you not think of the name Peter Hitchener for a second?
No, I was all set to say Peter Hitchener.
I was working back from the – all this episode I've been working back
from the name Peter Hitchener to try and think of something,
but it's just Peter Hitchener just crushing noobs in Fortnite.
He's in there.
He's got the VR helmet on.
You know what?
Nothing.
There isn't anything here.
No.
No, Gearbox, Ubisoft, Devolver,
whoever they are. Oh, they do funny
like insane
press conferences that are like, that
skewer the gaming industry. Oh. I haven't
watched that one yet, but they're always pretty funny.
Okay. Yeah. Well, Capcom's not till
Tuesday, so hopefully they will
release some Street Fighter related news.
Oh, they're going to release another game
and you can have four players
and then they'll put the rest of them over the court.
Remember the last time they released like half a game or whatever?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it didn't have a lot of the modes that you would just get automatically?
I hate that shit.
Maybe they'll do another Marvel versus Capcom.
Well, they think there might be an XCOM-style Marvel game coming as well.
Oh.
Yeah, there's been rumours of that.
So we're probably, this is not the week to do this, I think.
No, definitely not.
But anyway, I don't have anything else to say about E3.
We'll talk about it next week.
Other than whatever.
Whatever.
You're Liam lynching it.
Remember that guy?
Yeah, I do remember him.
And he remembers me.
I was hitting him up.
He's never said anything to me, though.
It's okay.
Took it personally, but it's all right.
Do the next segment of the show, Mason.
Okay. It's what we're reading. What we're going to read. Here we go. Took it personally, but it's alright. Do the next segment of the show, Mason. Okay. It's what we're
reading. What we're going to read.
Here we go. I'm bringing it up.
I'm doing a thing.
Westworld.
My computer updated,
which was always good. Terrific.
And it was also after I just restarted it.
I'd restarted and it was like, guess what?
You get to restart for an upgrade.
I'm like, you're really pushing it, mate.
You couldn't have done this while I was restarting earlier.
Yeah, exactly.
Mere moments ago.
You're going to go on my stack of old laptops any minute now.
That's right.
You've seen the stack.
You show your laptop.
Yeah.
The stack of old laptops in your life.
I've now got this thing in the corner that tells me the weather.
Oh, weather widget.
It says 11 degrees and warning. And then it's like a news tab and it's like, this is what's happening in the corner that tells me the weather. Oh, weather widget. It says 11 degrees and warning, and I'm like,
and then it's like a news tab, and it's like,
this is what's happening in the AFL or whatever.
What does Channel 9 have to say about it?
It is 9, actually, because it's the wild world of sports,
so you are correct, and 9 news.
But I'm like, how do I get rid of this?
There's just no options.
It's just something that sits in the...
It's put it on the stack and buy another one and don't upgrade it.
You should connect to your account.
What account?
What do you mean?
I don't know.
Manage interests.
None.
Let me stop this.
Okay, I just clicked manage interest and it took me to msn.com.
This segment should be called what are we dadding today.
This is just you in full dad mode.
I didn't sign up for anything.
I can't delete the widget.
I don't want this widget.
for anything. I can't delete the widget. I don't
want this widget.
When I clicked on it to manage,
it took me into whatever
the new version of Internet Explorer is
now to MSN.com
to all these things that I
can pick. Do you want
Sydney news? Do you want Brisbane news?
There's a live operator on MSN.com just waiting
for somebody to log into MSN.com.
Hey, what do you want?
I'll give you anything.
You want free access to stuff for a year?
I'll do it.
Do you remember MSN Messenger, though, Mason?
Boy, do I.
That was hot stuff.
I remember it.
All right, what are you reading?
Well, James, you'll never believe this, but today I was playing The Legend of Zelda,
Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch.
What's it like?
Because you, James, and your wife, Claire, purchased a Nintendo Switch for me for my birthday.
That's right.
I'm very appreciative.
We didn't want to.
We didn't want to, but we felt obligated.
Well, what I've done is my strategy of a year of coming over here
being like, man, I was thinking about buying a Nintendo Switch this week,
but then I went down to JB Hi-Fi and they didn't have the colour I wanted.
And I thought, could I even justify this purchase to myself?
No. I mean, I thought, could I even justify this purchase to myself? No.
I mean, I thought about buying a different console,
but often on my work break it's a console that you can not only
dock to your television but I could take with me on the go.
And then I chipped away at you long enough that you were just like,
just get me.
And you even got the colour that I wanted.
Well, yeah, because you wanted the grey one, right?
I wanted the grey one.
Because then you look like more of a cool stealth dude.
The exact cool stealth.
A cool stealth businessman.
Did you dock it?
I didn't dock it initially, but I've just been playing in handheld.
I'm going to dock it tomorrow probably.
Well, I didn't dock mine for like two years until I think even this year
because then my son and I started playing stuff.
It looks great.
I'm like, I should have done this a long time ago.
I can see why people do this.
Well, I played it for a couple of hours just on the thing,
and I'm like, this looks too good to just be on this.
What's it like, this Breath of the Wild,
this game I have that I haven't played yet?
It's really good.
It's great.
It's very intuitive.
It's got a great kind of – I can't believe I'm reviewing a game
that came out like three years ago, but here we go.
And everybody universally loves it.
Everybody loves it.
But for anyone on the fence who is no one...
Me? I haven't played it.
It's got this very cool, like, techno-magical universe.
You essentially, as Link, you essentially receive a Nintendo Switch
at the start of the game, which you keep on you.
Oh, okay.
It's kind of like a magical stone, but it's got your map on it.
Oh, cool.
And it activates things in the world.
In the Linkiverse.
In the Linkiverse.
And you go to something about totems, you have to un-something?
You have to kind of.
Divine beasts or something?
I think that might be later, but currently you have to kind of go
to various shrines and activate the shrines.
You have a complete task.
You've got like runes that give you like a magnetic telekinesis.
You can cook foods to give you.
You love that stuff.
I do.
I thought because you liked Red Dead, I was going to get you,
I was like that or Mario Odyssey and I thought you'd probably
like Zelda a bit better.
It's cool, man.
I know.
And later in the game or possibly in the DLC.
Motorbike.
You drop around on a motorbike.
Yes, exactly.
It's a rad motorbike.
Why not?
Like it's a cool, like I guess.
What about the breakable weapons?
That would annoy me.
I haven't broken that many so far.
Okay.
But there's enough where it's not annoying where you're like,
I don't have a sword, I need a stick.
Thus far.
Yeah.
I don't know because like you go around the world and you get food
and, you know, provisions and stuff and you can like, you and you can shoot wild boar and fish and stuff to get.
But I'm wondering if – I've yet to see stuff respawn,
so I'm kind of wondering if I'm like, if I eat all the apples
and then I die, is there no more apples?
Yeah.
It's good fun though.
Okay, cool.
And it's really interesting because it's sort of like imagining
what this universe of Hyrule would be
given this technology, and they've gone with, okay,
it's a techno-magical universe, which is kind of really interesting.
And I guess you could sort of...
Because they're all different universes, aren't they?
Yeah, they are.
Yeah, I guess so, yeah.
Are you going to get Skyward Sword, because they're re-releasing that?
I never played the original Skyward Sword.
Here's how many Zelda games I've played, James.
Here we go.
The Legend of Zelda.
Yep.
Then this one.
So the first one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then this one.
I don't really think I've ever played it.
I think I played some of the 64 ones, but I don't remember.
Cool.
All right.
Well, good.
Yeah.
I'm glad you enjoy it.
And also this week, I watched two Robert De Niro movies.
Which De Niro movies?
I watched.
Bad Grandpa and Getting. Bad Grandpa?
And Getting Even with Grandpa?
No. The new one where he has to fight his grandson in a attic or something?
Neither of those ones.
I watched.
As Good As It Gets.
No, he's not in that.
No.
Analyze This, Analyze That.
Yes.
No.
I watched Ronin.
Oh, yeah.
Have you seen that?
Which one's that?
Ronin's the one that has, it's from the 90s. It's from like 98.
Yeah, I do know that.
He is some sort of former American intelligence agent
and he's brought together with a crew of.
John Reno.
Misfits to pull off a job in Europe.
I do remember this.
They've got to retrieve a MacGuffin in a briefcase.
I have seen this.
It's really good.
It's got that in the tunnel chase that people talk about, right?
Yes, it's got some great car chases.
Yeah.
Apparently, I learned very recently that until this point,
like France did not allow gunfire, like fake gunfire in the city.
Robert De Niro because he's Italian.
Robert De Niro in the city.
They didn't allow like car chases in the city or whatever.
Oh, okay.
But the director apparently like he's quite – because he did –
John Frankenheimer.
John Frankenheimer.
He did like the Manchurian Candidate.
I think he did a French Connection movie or something like that.
And they were, they're so smitten with him.
He's like a real Jerry Lewis.
Oh, he's dead.
He is dead.
In 2002.
Yes.
Yeah.
But I've watched this, you know, like once every couple of years since it came out.
Yeah.
And it took me until this viewing to realize there are three Bond villains in this movie.
Who have we got then?
Sean Bean.
Makes sense.
Who's 006.
Yep. He's got, it's got Jonathan Pryce, the man who wants to have we got then? Sean Bean. Makes sense. Who's 006. Yep.
He's got, it's got Jonathan Pryce, the man who wants to take over the world with computers.
With newspapers.
With newspapers, rather.
Yes, yes, yes.
And Michael Lonsdale, who was Drax, Hugo Drax in Moonraker.
Oh.
I'm like, huh.
Bondapalooza, you said to yourself.
It's a great cast.
It's got Sean Reno, De Niro, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce, Natasha McKellen, others.
Others. There's so many others in it. Yeah. It's really good. It's good, from what I remember. Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce, Natasha McKellen, others.
Others.
There's so many others in it.
It's really good.
It's good from what I remember.
The plot is kind of thin on the ground.
It's a good cast.
Yeah.
And that more than makes up for it.
That's true.
Yeah.
Okay.
What was the other De Niro movie you watched?
Jackie Brown.
I've never seen Jackie Brown.
It's like the only Tarantino movie I haven't seen.
It's amazing though, right?
It's very good.
It's very good.
Because I think Samuel L. Jackson this week He was interviewed and he talked about the top five movies he's been in
Like his five favourite movies and Jackie Brown was in there
And I'm like, I'll give that a whirl
And then I'm like, oh, I remember De Niro's in this again
By chance
And what he had as a compare to the other Tarantino movies
Because also he didn't write this one, did he?
And it's based on a book he didn't write, obviously
Yeah, it's based on an book he didn't write, obviously.
Yeah, it's based on an Elmore Leonard novel.
Yes.
I think it's good.
Again, it's a movie with quite a lean plot.
Like it's very pretty.
So it's not as twisty as like a Pulp Fiction.
It's a little twisty, but I think it's like when Zack Snyder did Watchmen. It's a plot that you can't really mess with too much,
otherwise the whole thing falls apart.
So he's sort of restrained to that,
but then he can add his Tarantino dialogue to it.
So he's like, what up, and then there's a lot of N-words or whatever.
Correct, yes.
You've nailed that, yeah.
He knows what he's doing.
Good movie, in my opinion.
I just looked up the films of John Frankenheimer.
Go on.
And one of the films that he directed was The French Connection 2.
2, yeah.
I didn't know there was a sequel to French Connection.
And apparently it's all right.
He directed Reindeer Games as well.
With Ben Affleck.
With Ben Affleck, yeah.
That must have been his last movie.
It was.
Wow.
What a way to go out.
Oh, Stellan Skarsgård is also in.
That's the name I was trying to pull.
Stellan Skarsgård is also in Ronin. I've seen his trying to pull. Skarsgård is also in. Ronin.
I've seen his bus.
Haven't we all?
In Marvel movies.
That's right, yeah.
Cool.
I finished Maniac of New York, the last issue came out.
Oh, because there's been five, right?
And it just kind of stops.
And I'm like.
In a bad way?
No, it's not bad.
It just stops.
Like I'm like, this is good.
And they're like, and it just ends.
And I'm like, oh, there's surely. And they're like, it's coming back. So it's not a. It just stops. Like I'm like, this is good. And they're like, and it just ends. And I'm like, oh, there's surely.
And they're like, it's coming back.
So it's not a resolution to the story.
Not at all.
Of this maniac who is killing people in New York
and people just had to get used to it.
Yeah.
But it just stops and it'll be back at some point.
Great.
That's it.
But I really enjoyed it.
But I'm also like, I'm annoyed that there isn't more of it.
Same.
This is your fault. You recommended this to me. I did recommend it to you, yeah. like I'm annoyed that there isn't more of it. Same. This is your fault.
You recommended this to me.
I did recommend it to you, yeah.
So that's what we're reading for this week.
I've got some other stuff.
I've got a screener for that Mark Wahlberg's The Highlander movie.
Oh, have you?
Yeah, so I might watch that.
I don't think I will actually.
I kind of don't want to watch it.
So thanks, people who sent me that.
But are you going to watch it?
Maybe.
I mean, you know, a bit silly, a bit of silly fun.
Apparently it's very boring.
Oh.
Yeah.
But I haven't seen it.
Okay.
What do you mean I'm a highlander?
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
What do you mean?
Just that for 40 minutes.
That's very cool.
And he's hit by a lightning.
That's his next life.
What do you mean I got hit by lightning?
What do you mean?
Anyway, what are you going?
What do you mean I'm a Dutch milkmaid now?
What do you mean I'm in the 17th century?
Wait, it's time.
Why am I back in time now?
What do you mean?
Yeah, I don't know.
It seems him playing against type, I don't know.
It seems him playing against type.
I don't know if it'll work.
That's kind of why I want to watch it.
Because it's a milkmaid?
Yeah, because he's a 17th century Dutch milkmaid. But I mean also because he doesn't feel like this is kind of, you know,
a man tumbling through time, an ancient warrior tumbling through time.
That doesn't feel very Mark Wahlberg-y to me,
and I want to see if it works on any level.
I bet it's so Mark Wahlberg you'll shoot yourself.
But I don't want to do that.
Then you better not watch it.
I won't watch it.
All right, next segment.
Letters.
Yeah.
The classic one was letters, oh, letters.
We love you, some letters.
They're only a day away.
I know they're here right now.
We're going to do letters.
They are here right now.
We are going to do letters.
This is the segment of the show where you might say, for example,
hashtag weeklyplanetpod on Twitter or weeklyplanetpod at gmail.com
and shoot over Gmail.
Do you want to do our audio letter first, Mason?
Let's do an audio letter.
Get your headphone ready.
Okay.
Get them ready, Mason.
Okay.
He's doing it. I'm Get your headphone ready. Okay. Get them ready, Mason. Okay. He's doing it.
I'm doing it.
It's true.
You made a motion there like you were pretending to do it.
I'm like, what are we doing here?
Are we not doing it?
Oh, good.
I closed it when I opened that anime link.
I mean, I didn't open.
That was a joke.
It's from Ryan.
Hello, Ryan.
Hello there, James and Mason.
My name is Ryan Smallman.
I'm a freelance illustrator based in Sao Paulo.
Even though I was born in the US,
I grew up here in Brazil.
Fellow great mates may have seen my
Rob at Battenbat fan art that I made a while
back. I was really proud of it. It made its
rounds on social media and such.
And I also had the chance to do a cover
for one of Ben's singles, which was really fun.
So needless to say, I'm a long-time listener
and fan of everything under the big sandwich
umbrella. Anyways, my question for you guys spawned from a lifelong habit of mine which is to
constantly and involuntarily cite quotes from media
be it from movies TV shows or comedy specials it can just
be the smallest phrase or word or even a specific intonation
that most people do not realize is a quote but I'll just sprinkle it into
every conversation.
Mine are mostly SpongeBob and King and Pew related,
so I wondered if there are any obscure quotes that you two find yourselves constantly quoting.
I would love to know.
Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks for making all Mondays fun days,
and I hope you guys are doing well.
Oh, and can I be the official Brazil-based
American illustrator of the pod?
Okay, take care.
Sorry, man.
We'd love to be able to help you.
There's so many of them, though.
My hands are tied. There's a queue a mile long, honestly. Of, take care. Sorry, man. We'd love to be able to help you. There's so many of them, though. My hands are tied.
There's a queue of my along, honestly.
Of course you can. Of course you can.
That's right. And I don't
I don't know. I probably do
because I think I just subconsciously steal a bunch
of stuff and then regurgitate it.
Not even subconsciously. Consciously a lot of the
times. Whoa. What about The Simpsons?
Yeah, that's probably. Yeah, I guess
so. Yeah. What about you? Like a? Yeah, that's probably, yeah. Yeah, I guess so. Yeah. What about you?
Like a specific whatever's?
There's a, did you ever watch, did you watch Brass Eye?
It was the, um.
Yes.
Chris Morris, the, uh. Incredible, yeah.
The, uh, but before he was the weirdo boss in the, the it crowd or the IT crowd, he,
he did a, like a fake news show that was really.
Hard hitting journalism.
One of them was about, they put all the pedophiles on a rocket to shoot into the sun.
They put a convicted pedophile in a rocket,
but then they realised and shoot it into space
and then realised like at the last minute they've put a kid on board as well
and they're like, that's the one thing we didn't want to happen
and they use that all the time.
That's exactly where I was going with that.
That's such a funny bit.
Didn't some people think it was real?
Almost certainly, yeah.
That's a great show.
I think most of it is probably on YouTube.
What's he up to?
That's a really good question.
Yeah, he's very funny.
Yeah.
We could look it up.
Please do.
Chris Morris was like he's just in that show,
but he made a bunch of shows. Did he do Four Lions? Yes, he did. Yeah, that's him. Yeah, he did a – Chris Morris was – like he's just in that show, but he made a bunch of shows.
Did he do Four Lions?
Yes, he did.
Yeah, that's him.
Yeah, yeah.
There you go.
Yeah, but he did Brass Eye the day to day.
He's got quite a big shock of curly hair these days.
Yeah, he's in Veep.
That's true, yeah.
Apparently.
The Day Shall Come he directed in 2019.
I don't know what that is.
Yeah, yeah.
But he's done a bunch of television including – oh, he did a couple of seasons of Veep.
Yeah.
There you go.
So, yeah, he's probably working on some – oh, he did Big Train.
That makes sense.
Yeah, yeah, yes.
Because Big Train is fucking hilarious.
Anyway, essentially my daily life is just me repeating that phrase ad nauseum.
One of the things I have been doing, there's a Tom Sakura bit
where he talks about kids who go into prisons
and then inmates yell at them or whatever.
Oh, yeah, right.
And there's one guy who's like, what are you in for?
And he's like, stealing bikes.
And the guy says back to the kid, he goes, bikes!
But I can't do it properly.
But now when I see a bike store, I yell bikes.
And I do it in the car with my son and he's like, stop doing that.
Because it's terrifying.
I don't imagine it, but I just randomly yell bikes.
He's like, respect the craft of the joke writing.
You've got to.
It's either a pig rolling down a hill or it's nothing.
That's right.
Dad.
So what else have you got in terms of letters?
Ooh, let's have a look.
Thank you, though.
Thank you for that letter.
Yes, thank you.
Because what a conversation we've had from it.
That's right.
This is from David.
Okay.
Local Harrison Ford sighting.
Oh, yeah.
So last week I was driving around the north of England
when I passed an old guy absolutely barrelling down a hill on a bike.
Yep.
As I was passing him, I briefly thought to myself,
that guy looks like Harrison Ford, but didn't pay much attention to it.
Later that day I saw on Twitter that it was actually Harrison Ford.
I think that it's incredible that he's fit whilst being almost 80.
I think he's one of the few famous people who are over 70
who would beat me in a fist fight,
the others being Willem Dafoe and Samuel L. Jackson.
I'm sorry, how old is Willem Dafoe?
It says over 70.
That cannot be true.
That is true. I thought he was maybe old is Willem Dafoe? It says over 70. That cannot be true. Excuse me.
That is true.
I thought he was maybe like 58 or something.
He's 65.
Oh, okay.
That makes more sense.
Okay, right, right, right.
Our world hasn't been completely rocked.
Anyway, David asks, which aging actors do you think could beat you in a fight?
Oh.
I thought initially it was like, which aging actors do you think you could beat in a fight?
And I'm like, most of them.
Most of them, probably.
To be honest.
Could beat me in a fight.
Harrison Ford, probably.
Ars DeLone, definitely.
Christopher Lee, even though he is actually dead.
Yes.
He could probably still beat us.
He's got vampire powers.
He's got vampire powers and killing a lot of people in World War's powers.
Do you think you could beat both De Niro and Pacino?
Because I feel like I could.
Though De Niro's got some boxing on him.
That's true.
Pacino I could beat.
Maybe not De Niro.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But also, De Niro, he's not on him. That's true. Pacino I could beat. Maybe not De Niro. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But also De Niro is not a big man, is he?
Well, yeah.
He might be in those stilts.
He might be in those stilts.
Yeah.
I could beat.
Because here's the thing.
Yep.
When you're considering what old actors you could beat in a fight,
you have to consider both the ease at which you could defeat them
and the negative PR attracted to you.
Ah, don't worry about that.
Okay, then Betty White.
You're in the moment.
Betty White.
Betty White.
Could you beat up Clint Eastwood?
Yeah, I reckon I could.
Interesting.
Yeah.
I don't know, because he boxed with that orangutan
for a couple of movies, didn't he?
Yeah, that's true, yeah.
How can he be grisly?
He'd be grisly.
I don't know.
Did you say YouTubers are fighting TikToks or something?
No.
I saw Floyd Mayweather fought one of the Paul brothers.
That's correct.
Wow.
And everybody...
I didn't watch it, but everyone got fleeced.
Yeah.
Because it was a bad fight.
Yeah.
Apparently.
Yeah.
Yeah, great questions all around.
I think so too.
I'm going to find one more.
I've got one.
Oh, please, go ahead.
It's from TooManyServingsOfJohn
On Twitter
Why is every solo female superhero movie
We've gotten or about to get
I.e. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman 84
Captain Marvel
Black Widow
Not counting Catwoman
Supergirl
Or Electra
Are all flashback movies
And three of them are period pieces
Isn't that weird?
I guess it is
But also you name some that aren't
But those aren't modern really are they?
Like Catwoman Supergirl Electra They're not really, are they? Like Catwoman, Supergirl and Elektra, they're not recent movies, are they?
No, that's true, yeah.
But I guess the next Captain Marvel movie won't be.
And others.
I think the next Wonder Woman might be modern day.
Do you know that for a fact?
How could I possibly know that for a fact, James?
I'm asking if you know it.
You were trying to extract secret information from me
that I may not have.
Yeah.
And I know you've been at me for a while about this information.
Tell me the truth.
Tell me the truth.
Well, the truth is.
Yeah.
No, I shan't.
You're going to get me again, James.
That is an interesting observation.
I guess Black Widow is like It's only like
Black Widow might actually be set in the modern day
Because it isn't like Infinity War set
Slightly in the future
Oh it's in like 2023
I don't know or Endgame is at least
Here's an email from Brian
Hi Brian
Brian says
Hey James and Maiso
Enjoyed our Monty Python talk from the other day.
Thank you.
I've been obsessed with all things Python for the past year.
Some of my favorite sketches include the visitors when Eric Idle interrupts
a romantic evening by saying, remember me from the pub three years ago?
I remember that sketch.
Do you have any favorite Monty Python sketches is the question.
Oh, man, yes, I do.
I mean, whether it's from the show or from the movies.
From the movies.
Yeah, yeah.
I think there's a lot of good stuff even in Life of, not Life of Brian,
even in Meaning of Life.
Yeah, yeah.
There's some actual, like, there's a moment where, like, Eric Idle,
I think it's Eric Idle, as the French waiter,
you follow him in, like, in real time or really long.
It's after a guy explodes in a restaurant, which is a funny bit of stuff.
But then he's like, come with me.
And you basically follow him through the streets of England
and he eventually ends up in the countryside.
And then he tells you like a story from his childhood
and then he's not impressed that you're not impressed
and then he just starts like verbally abusing you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I'm just like the drawn out nature of this sketch.
I just, I really enjoy.
I don't even know if that's the best.
I just think that's really weird and funny.
I'm trying to think of some of the – there's one –
The parrot sketch, Mason.
The dead parrot sketch, yeah.
There's this – I mean there's so –
The old guys who are comparing their life when they were young
and like how they grew up and they had to live in the middle of the –
hole in the middle of the road and they had to get up for work
before they went to bed.
That's a good one.
There's so many sketches where like I've never really,
because my dad loves Monty Python.
Our whole family does.
So I've watched them a whole bunch of times.
But I've never really looked into the production of that show.
Sure.
And I'm sort of, I've never realized,
I've never thought about like were they just given sort of carte blanche
to do whatever they wanted?
Yeah, essentially.
Or, you know, was there any pushback?
Because there's so many sketches here in the show that should never have worked
and would like nowadays nobody would be allowed to put them on.
Because of cancel culture, Mason.
Because of cancel culture.
Like have you seen the cheese shop sketch?
I don't remember that one.
It's a guy who goes into a cheese shop and he just continually asks
for different types of cheeses in his shop that is filled with cheese
and the proprietor just keeps telling him they don't have that cheese
and eventually it gets to the point where he says,
do you have any cheese at all in this shop?
And the guy says, yes, of course we do.
And then the guy says, I'm going to ask you that question again
and if your answer is no, I'm going to shoot you in the head.
He says, do you have any cheese at all in this shop?
And the guy's like, no, and then he shoots him in the head.
Yeah.
It's real odd.
There's a sketch about two gangsters like the Kray brothers.
They're called the Piranha Brothers.
Oh, yeah.
And they both live in fear of a giant porcupine named Dinsdale.
No, wait, called Spiny Norman., wait, it's called Spiny Norman.
The porcupine's called Spiny Norman.
And it's just an animated.
Like one of those Terry Gilliam style.
It comes around buildings.
Yeah, just to make like a.
Look, I've got a list here.
Yeah, go for it.
There's a sketch called Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days.
And it's like one of those 1920s garden parties
where there's a piano player and they're all in striped blazers
and straw hats or whatever and they're all having a delightful time.
And somebody's like, oh, anyone for tennis?
And they hit the tennis ball and it hits somebody in those
and then there's just this enormous fountain of blood
and they all then accidentally kill each other in the most horrific ways.
And at one point, like, the entire, like, keyboard of the piano
has gone through somebody's chest.
Yeah, yeah.
Everybody's hands have been cut off.
It's a nightmare.
It's just a nightmare of a...
I always enjoy the transitions because they say that, like,
often the peak of the sketch isn't the end.
So they'll just cut abruptly.
And, like, the weird transitions into the next scenes.
Yeah.
Sometimes they'll have somebody walk on or like it'll just be like now
for something completely different or whatever.
And that I've always enjoyed.
Like sketches just start like whenever.
Yeah.
Or start whenever.
There's a sketch where like a guy wants to,
it's having an argument lessons but then he goes in the wrong room and it's just getting hit
on the head lessons.
It's great stuff.
And he goes into the insult room or whatever as well,
and the guy's like, you tit, when he walks in.
Anyway, Monty Python.
It's good.
I say bring them all back.
Two of them are dead.
Yep.
So that's sad.
And one of them can't say anything anymore.
That's right.
And lives in Spain maybe.
There is an excellent Steve Martin documentary from like the late 80s
and he's at the end of it, not to spoil this 30-year-old documentary,
he's like, but where are they now?
And he's like, they're in this cupboard.
And he opens up the cupboard and the four of them are just sitting in there.
And like it's just before Graham Chapman died, so it's quite thin.
And that's like the last thing they did together, like all of them together.
And also Graham Chapman, like the week before he died
or it might have even been the day before he died of AIDS,
he got a magazine story published about how he'd returned to health
and everything.
Oh, he just lied about it.
And then it got published that he died.
Wow, that's commitment to the bit.
That's great.
Oh, dear.
So, yeah, good show.
What's going to happen here is we're going to stop recording
and then I'm immediately going to think of ten more sketches.
Come back next week. Next week I'm just going to stop recording and then I'm immediately going to think of ten more sketches. Come back next week.
Next week I'm just going to list them all.
I love it. And I'm going to
explain them badly. If you could. And then
people are going to be like, well now you've both ruined
me being surprised by that sketch
and you've ruined all the jokes. Yeah, that's
right. And I love it. I just want to be clear.
I'm loving it and I'm doing a dab about it. He's loving it.
This is from
Zoltan. Says, listening to your discussion of Sweet Tooth
and how it was good, even though it was very different
than the comic, do you have an example of a film
that was very close to the source comic in execution
but was not very good?
I have, I think, the perfect example.
Go on.
Green Lantern.
That is pretty close.
It's just Green Lantern, isn't it?
It's very much Green Lantern.
It's very, and it's, because it's just green lantern isn't it it's very much green land and it's very and it's
well because it's sort of it's interesting because i think it it it adopted some elements that were
very popular that were current in the comic books at the time so they took the the original origin
from the sixth the 50s i guess and then they just added in the villain from the current day books
and element and so i I don't know.
It just didn't work.
They were like, we're going to use Parallax, the big yellow cloud.
That's going to be the villain.
Why?
Why would you do that?
Why would you do it?
Another example would be, I mean, there's the early Fantastic Four,
but even Fantastic Four 2005 is pretty accurate, wouldn't you say?
Yeah.
Like origin-wise and, I mean, Doom's a weird metal man and whatever.
Yeah, and it's, you know, it feels kind of bright and colourful
like the comic books.
Yeah, and they all look like the characters.
Yeah, it's true.
Electra, I guess, because he dies but he comes back
but there's a guy's tattoo.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What about Hulk 2003?
I mean, he fights his dad.
They change a lot of that stuff.
Yeah.
But it's like Hulk-esque, I guess.
Well, see, again, I feel like it has the same problem as Green Lantern did
in that it's an origin movie, but they've added in very modern elements
like his dad was a bad father and all that sort of stuff.
I feel like the first Hulk should have just been him smashing stuff
for 90 minutes.
I agree.
And then you add the rest of that
in all the sequels.
Yeah.
Or not at all.
Or not at all ever.
And they wanted to just,
they wanted to have everything.
They wanted to have
the old school origin
and the modern day stuff
and it's like.
Those fools.
Those absolute fools.
They flew too close
to the very green sun
that is the Hulk.
That's right, yes.
The universe that he lives in.
Correct.
Where he gets his powers.
I've also written here Jonah Hex probably but I have no idea. I've also written here Jonah Hex probably, but I have no idea.
I've also never seen Jonah Hex.
Never seen it.
That's it from me.
You got anything else?
That's it from me also.
Let's wrap it up.
Okay.
Folks, thank you so much for listening.
Thank you for liking the show and subscribing and telling a friend
and lying to a friend.
Please email in, again, if you've lied to a friend to get them to listen
or if you have been lied to and you've stuck around.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Thank you for leaving a five-star review because it helps us very much.
It certainly does.
We've got a couple here.
This is from Jammer Fist who says, Becker boys.
Excuse me, what's their name?
Jammer Fist.
Interesting.
Always love to hear an entire podcast about the wonderful 90s sitcom Becker.
I assume it's a crossover from Cheers, I guess.
I think there is a crossover from Cheers in it.
Oh, there's a mention of Sam Malone.
Oh, interesting.
Okay.
This one is from JPS1842.
Positive attitudes and good sense of humour.
This is one of only a few nerd media podcasts that does not devolve
into passive-aggressive bickering among guys who are trying to prove
they have more nerd cred than each other.
I mean, I do a lot of that anime thing.
But that's real.
That is real.
Both podcasts.
If we were going to go in any direction,
it would be us passive-aggressively attempting to prove
we know less about this stuff.
That's true, yeah.
Hey, we're still doing this and we know nothing.
Both podcasters have a good sense of humour about what they review
and, more importantly, themselves.
So don't spend the pod hating on everything.
I've listened to them for many, many years, so long,
and will continue to do so.
Thank you so much.
Both lovely reviews, five stars.
It helps out.
Maybe I'll read it on the show.
You know what I mean?
That's right.

Not until July 9th, I think.
Something like that.
All right, let's get out of here.
Oh, James, there's a sketch.
It's self-defense against fresh fruit.
Have you seen that?
John Cleese is a drill sergeant.
He's teaching people to defend themselves against fresh fruit.
And then he gets a guy to come at him with like a bunch of grapes or whatever and just
shoots him with a regular gun.
It's great.
It's great.
And I've ruined that one for you as well and for everyone.
That's funny.
You've played it funnily though.
Thank you.
All right, guys.
Thanks for watching.
Grabbed our jam, you guys.
