Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet where we talk movies
and comics and TV shows.
My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday.
And with me as always is my co-host, Nick Mason.
Hello.
I just want to give a quick shout out to Royal Collings for editing this and also our episode at BigSandwich.co, which people want to know, etc.
He's doing this on his Boxing Day morning.
Oh, my goodness, yeah.
And, look, I offered.
I said, listen, I can do it.
Yeah.
And he insisted.
He said, you'll ruin it, James.
He said, listen back to one of the old episodes where you used to edit them
and it's bad.
You'll lose all the listeners.
He could be doing what is traditional, which is, of course,
watching a Bond movie, which is what a lot of people do on a boxing day.
Is that true, is it?
And I'll tell you one thing.
If you're in Australia and one of your traditions is to watch a Bond movie,
you might have been like, well, they took them off all the streaming services,
but I took a bullet for everybody.
I went to JB Hi-Fi and I spent $90 on the 25-disc Blu-ray
James Bond collection.
And then I waited a day.
That's included the latest?
No, and then I waited a day and they all came back on the streaming.
Is that true?
Yeah.
You're an idiot.
I am an idiot.
A lot of people don't think that.
It was on sale.
It's like $3.50 a movie.
It's not bad.
$90 is pretty good, to be fair.
Wow.
You and your physical media.
It'll be the death of you.
There'll be an earthquake and all your stuff's going to fall on you, Mason.
I'm going to be killed by – I'm going to have 25 James Bond Blu-rays
that have gone all the way through me.
A tornado's going to hit.
Absolutely.
So just before we get stuck in –
And the coroner will be there and he'll be
pulling out the Blu-ray right in my head and he'll be like, oh, it's the one where Sean Connery
pretends to be Japanese. The worst one. What a way to go. He's going to hell now. Probably.
So this week, we normally do the last episode of the year this week. I mean, and technically,
this is the last episode of the year, but we I mean, and technically this is the last episode of the year,
but we are going to come back very early January
to do our best and worst of the year.
Which will be the last episode of the year.
That's right, exactly.
We've got a permit from the government.
We're moving where the end of the year is.
Exactly.
We applied at the beginning of this year and it's just come through.
And they're like, well, no one's ever done this before,
but all right, granted.
That's right, granted.
But we need people's help for that because there's a voting thing
that Collin's put together where you can vote for all the weird
and odd different categories we have.
You know, we obviously talk about, like, best and worst in animated,
but we've got a few of our own little awards sprinkled in there.
Our silly little awards.
That's right.
Frivolous little awards.
Like Best Hair and Most of the Game is On as in, like,
a movie that, you know, plans for sequels that will obviously never happen.
You should nominate some stuff for the Find and Replace Award,
like the most generic script.
Absolutely.
You can put it in.
Just a few things up ahead.
People will know from last week we put up a Die Hard commentary.
We did.
You've done a fun little animation.
It's all on YouTube for free.
Yep, that's right.
If people are like, oh, I wouldn't mind some big sandwich content for free.
Yep, that's all there. You put a little animated thing up there, which is good. If people are like, oh, I wouldn't mind some big sandwich content for free. Yep, that's all there.
You put a little animated thing up there, which is good.
And also I remembered, I think in this commentary,
you say the funniest thing you've ever said.
But specifically, I don't remember what it is.
I think it's a bit about the, we're talking about RuPaul.
Okay, right.
Yeah, you really, that got you.
You know, as I was saying it, I'm like,
this is the best thing I've ever said.
All right.
Well, people should check that out.
If your tradition is not James Bond movies,
but in fact I am, get into that.
Also, I was on an episode of my friend Lisa's podcast,
Reanimates, which is her podcast about Jeffrey Combs,
the character actor.
We watched an episode of Ultraman from the 90s.
Oh, wonderful.
It's just wonderful.
A heck of a time.
You can search for that on all your podcast platforms.
He's in The Frighteners also, isn't he?
He's in The Frighteners.
That's right.
Now this week we're going to talk about a number of things,
including the new Doctor Strange trailer,
including the Uncharted trailer,
including the Death of the Nile trailer.
We've got some DC news in terms of casting.
We've got some people coming back where you'd be like,
that person's coming back and I can't even believe that, I reckon. We've got some Ghostbusters news, which is my favourite kind of casting. We've got some people coming back where you'd be like, that person's coming back and I can't even believe that, I reckon.
We've got some Ghostbusters news, which is my favourite kind of news.
We're going to do some information.
It's informational.
We're going to do some information.
About how Spider-Man is doing worldwide and rumours for what's next
for the Spider-Verse.
What's next for the Nightmare Alley-iverse?
What is happening?
Oh, I want to see that, Mason.
Let me see it.
Too bad you can't.
They're cancelling showings.
There'll be more showings on our way home.
Isn't that also Disney?
Like, don't Disney own that?
Might be, yeah.
It's Guillermo del Toro, but I think it's being put out through
searchlight or something.
Was it like a 20th century whatever?
Yeah, I think it might be searchlight.
Just check.
Okay.
I mean, I said you just check.
I'll check.
Okay, you check.
I don't have the capacity to check that.
Yeah, I wish you could.
I wish you had what it takes.
I don't know how to do it.
But you don't have the capacity to check that. I wish you could. I wish you had what it takes. I don't know how to do it. But you don't.
This is distributed through TSG Entertainment,
Double Dare Productions also.
There's an episode of Double Dare in it?
Yeah, apparently.
Wow.
What a show.
Anyway, and then we're going to talk about Matrix Resurrections
and, of course, because of the end of the year,
we're doing Snake Eyes.
We're doing Snake Eyes, yeah.
We've been teasing, we've been japing, and we've been joshing.
But we're going to talk about Snake Eyes for real.
Because we can't talk about the best and worst of the year next week
without having disgusting.
Because maybe it's the best of something, maybe it's the worst of something.
I mean, we know because we've already seen it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But we've got to put our thoughts out here on wax.
That's right.
And vote for that thing, please.
Oh, yeah, definitely.
Yeah, please, yeah.
Yeah, cool.
All right, let's start with trailers ahoy.
So we've got officially this was the post-credit sequence
for Spider-Man No Way Home, which we're not going to spoil.
There are time codes if you do want to jump ahead regardless,
but this trailer appears at the very end of that movie
and they released it officially.
I'm not doing a trailer breakdown because it's Christmas
and fuck that.
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
is what it is. Doctor Strange is having a spot of
bother in the multiverse I think would be more appropriate.
Why don't they just make him British?
It's too late. Yeah, I guess it is.
Maybe a British version of him will come over.
Would that be cool? I've settled into the accent I think.
Yeah, it's fine, whatever. Yeah, you're right. At this point
how many movies has he done? Anyways, we see
Scarlet Witch. I've also settled into his hair.
I know you go back and forth on his hair.
That's bad.
But imagine just regular Cumberbatch.
Yeah, you'd have to do things to it, obviously.
Yeah.
You wouldn't just walk in as off the street.
That's true.
Anyway, Scarlet Witch is in it.
We talked mostly about this last week.
America is in it.
Yes, that's right.
Yeah.
So who's that?
She is some sort of multiversal traveller, I believe.
I think that's her power set.
I'll look it up while you talk.
Great.
Mordo was in it, but he's got longer hair now, and that's cool.
It's also, did you see there was an action figure revealed
of Doctor Strange with a ponytail as well?
Who?
We're going to get into a whole lot of new hair game going on in this.
Middle-aged Doctor Strange divorced dad.
That's right.
He's got a ponytail and a Pontiac Firebird.
And we've also got the evil Doctor Strange, of course,
from the What If universe.
We also see what looks to be Shu Magorath,
but a lot of people are saying that it's not.
It's like another dimension of whatever.
From his race.
Yeah, well, I mean, Shu Magorath traditionally.
By traditionally, I mean in Marvel versus Capcom, he's pink.
This guy's sort of a brownie grey.
Great.
I love that.
Okay, America, America Chavez, sometimes Miss America.
Her powers include superhuman strength, speed, longevity,
and durability, flight, and vulnerability.
She can open star portals, produce star blasts,
interdimensional travel, and time travel.
So how many of those she'll actually have?
We don't know.
But I would say she can basically kick open holes in reality,
so that's probably her number one.
And probably in people as well, I reckon.
Yeah, probably just a regular kick.
Probably extends to that.
Chavez has developed the ability to make an enemy burst
into tiny star fragments with a punch.
Fuck, that's crazy.
Don't do that, unless you have to, obviously.
Yeah, yeah, go nuts with it.
If you need to, go absolutely nuts.
Yeah, because she kind of just looks like a Captain America kind of apprentice or something.
Yeah, a real Captain America stand.
She's got that denim jacket with a star on the back.
That's it.
The other thing is, and we talked about this last week when we talked about this trailer,
there's rumors of a lot of cameos in this as a result of not just the original filming
but also the reshoots they're doing at the moment.
So I think we're going to get a multiverse of madness
in more ways than one, Mason.
Oh.
There you go.
Oh, my goodness.
Anything else to say about that?
Do you think we'll get Kevin Feige in it as himself?
Oh, do you think he'd do it?
I mean, of all the things to do it.
Yeah.
Would they, like, turn up into his office and he's like,
my things are coming.
Multilinear, I thought you were going to say.
I'm Italian Kevin Feige.
I'm not the regular Kevin Feige.
Maybe.
You know, like in the comics that we talked about.
It's a me, Kevin Feige.
I chart the course of the Marvel Cinematica Universe.
I'm Italian.
Yeah, you're Italian.
So, you know, we talked about this recently
in one of the Spider-Man things we talked about,
like the characters visit Stan Lee and he's like,
I invented Spider-Man and now he's here, Gene Willikers or whatever.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I think it might be a step too far and maybe he probably doesn't want
to do that.
Yeah, probably not.
Yeah.
But, you know, it wouldn't matter if they did.
He doesn't seem the guy who's sort of like.
Needs to be in it.
He needs to be in anything, yeah.
Because people also, he's famous outside of it. He doesn't need to be who's sort of like. Needs to be in it. He needs to be in anything, yeah. Because people also, he's famous outside of it.
He doesn't need to be in them.
That's true, yeah.
And also, you know what?
If that's what he craves, you know what I mean?
If he wants to be famous, he is famous.
You know what I think?
I reckon that depending on the movie.
Yeah.
And depending on the appearance in the movie,
I reckon people might turn on him like all of a sudden.
Oh, like this is vanity.
Like, yeah.
This is hubris.
I think if it was just a really, really good movie,
like maybe, you know, top-tier Marvel movies,
I think people would be like, oh, it's Kevin Feige,
he's put himself in there.
But then it's also a case of he's put himself in.
Yeah.
Like I think the fun part about Stan Lee is they clearly went,
Stan, can you come and do this?
Yeah, and he's not making these movies either, is he?
Yeah, exactly.
So I think if Feige put himself in there,
people would be like, the hubris of this man.
I think at this point he's allowed to put himself in a movie.
What if somebody steals his hat?
Wow.
Well, he'd kill that person, I reckon.
In the movie?
No, real life.
Oh, no.
And if it was suggested as a scene,
if somebody suggested it on a podcast,
he might kill that person.
Just for talking about it.
That's right.
So there you go.
We also got, if there's nothing else to say,
because I don't really have much else to say.
It looks pretty solid.
It looks exciting.
I think there's so much in this.
Yeah.
And this is just like, this is like such a small sliver
of what this movie's going to be.
Do you think, because obviously we've got,
we're seeing the evil Doctor Strange from What If?
There's some sort of wedding scene.
It's him and Rachel McAdams.
Yeah, but are they getting married or is it a case,
are they guests or is this the evil Doctor Strange
having a flashback to when maybe.
Did they get married?
I don't know if they did.
I don't think they did.
Or maybe they did.
Or maybe I think, I mean, it's possible there was one
of the parallel universes where they did get,
I don't think it's in the show, but I mean,
it's possible they got married and then she inevitably
died again.
So maybe that's one of them.
Or if they decided that Doctor Strange and Rachel McAdams
are going to get married in the regular universe
and that's all going to fall to bits, who knows?
I don't know.
We'll have to wait until May 6th when this comes out,
which might be a little bit earlier here because sometimes they are.
My question actually was going to be,
do you think we're going to see any of the other
What If Parallel Univers universes from the TV series?
I mean, probably, I'd reckon we're probably going to see zombies that we're going to see.
Like, you'd have to make them obvious, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
Especially if it's a glimpse.
Yeah.
Because if you jump over to the What If reality where, what's the, I don't know, where, I
don't know, Iron Man's dead.
He's already dead.
There's a, if you pop over to the parallel universe where it's Captain Carter
and it's the modern day and you're like, what happened in this universe?
I mean, we have nothing to compare it to because we're in this universe.
We don't know.
Look around.
Can you see anything different?
What do you mean specifically?
Yeah, what do you notice that's different?
Yeah, yeah.
Anyways, let's talk about the next trailer, Uncharted,
or I like to call it Uncharted Who Farted,
this goddamn adaptation out.
Nice.
It looks all right, I guess.
But also, it's the whole movie, isn't it?
It really is.
Sony back to their old tricks.
If you're like, oh, maybe Uncharted trailer,
haven't heard about this, maybe I'll check it out,
and you want to watch the movie, just don't.
Yeah.
I mean, it's every action set piece from the movie in order, it seems.
It looks like the end credits kind of, not even end credits,
the end scene where somebody maybe has a moustache.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's even, yeah, I mean, and it's all the characters meeting,
and then they're having some sort of misunderstanding,
and then there's action, and then they're meeting more characters
and there's a treasure.
They've got to find the whatever, don't they?
Who's got the secret of the treasure?
Maybe we've got to work together and all that.
And it's the movie, so.
This could do well though, right?
How are they going to get the treasure out of the,
oh, okay, I see, because they've shown us how they're doing it.
So there is no surprises in this.
I like that there's no surprises.
Same.
And the other thing is, like, I've played all of these games,
so there's no surprises in these for me regardless.
And yet now I know even more somehow.
Would you say that, because I've played, like, snippets of some of them,
would you say that all the scenes in the trailer have been lifted directly
from the movie or is there some new stuff?
There's a lot.
Yeah, most of it.
It's from the games.
I think the one major plot point that's probably changed is that he's a bartender,
whereas in the games they meet when he's like an orphan teenager.
Oh, okay, right.
Whereas this is probably late teens, I guess.
Oh, no, early 20s if he's working in a bar.
I mean, if he's in Europe, he could be earlier.
Or he could be lying about his age.
He could be an orphan working in a bar.
Could be an orphan working in a bar.
How do you feel about Tom Holland getting another big franchise?
Is the world ready for that?
Do you know what I mean?
Chris Hemsworth is like, well, guess what?
I'm going to do Men in Black.
And people are like, fucking stop it.
And then he went, well.
Pick a better franchise.
I'm Jake Rake, international killing man.
Yeah, all right.
We don't mind that.
Sure, why not give him a name?
He can be Spider-Man.
He can be this guy.
He can be Fred Astaire.
He's got one more.
One more.
The Mind Snake Boy.
The Mind Snake Boy.
He's allowed four. No, he's allowed five. He can be Fred Astaire. He's got one more. One more. The Mind Snake Boy. The Mind Snake Boy. He's allowed four.
No, he's allowed five.
He's allowed five.
He can be the head of five major franchises, I think.
So he's got one left.
Okay.
Surprise us, Tom Holland.
Please.
Isn't it fascinating, though, that we live in a world where if you're reviewing a movie
and you go, oh, this movie's got a pretty good car chase in it, people are like, spoilers!
No!
But the trailers can also be like, here's everything that happens in this movie's got a pretty good car chase in it. People are like, spoilers, no! But the trailers can also be like,
here's everything that happens in this movie.
But if we were like, I feel like if we were to review this movie
and go, oh, Wahlberg's got a pretty funny line at the start
where he says this, people would be like, oh, spoilers.
Spoilers.
It is a, it's a strange, not strange,
it just feels very old school Sony.
You would have thought from off the back of Spider-Man,
like them revealing not nothing but a lot of nothing
that they could hide something in this.
I mean maybe there's some surprise.
There isn't.
I couldn't even get through the sentence honestly.
Couldn't do it.
I'd be amazed if there's anything else.
Yeah, was this how like old movie trailers used to be,
like pre-'70s trailers?
Yeah, I think so, probably.
It'd be like.
Steve McQueen.
Steve McQueen.
He's a cop on the edge.
Yep.
And he's the car chase.
And they're at the airport at the end and he shoots a guy.
Bullets.
He shoots the guy he was looking for.
He shoots him.
He found him.
He got him and he shot him.
Please see our movie.
Regardless.
Yeah, I probably would see it though. Yeah, yeah. You know? and he shot him. Please see our movie. Regardless. Yeah.
I probably would see it though.
Yeah.
You know?
And now Bull's hanging off the back of a cargo plane.
Bunch of crates.
And he's falling off the crates.
He's going to be all right though.
Yeah.
Oh, here he is.
Here he is.
He's here.
He survived.
He survived.
He's okay.
Anyway.
It's Bullitt.
It's Bullitt.
He's all right.
Anyway, then we also got a trailer for Death on the Nile,
which I think is a movie that Disney are trying to quietly kill.
This is a 20th century Fox.
I think it's a holdover.
I'm pretty sure.
Yeah, because they did murder on the Air and Express.
Yeah.
But I think this is the one they may have acquired.
And then obviously off the back of Armie Hammer's been in a spot of bother.
Yep.
And now we've got Letitia Wright who's doing some anti-vac stuff allegedly.
And so is Russell Brand.
Russell Brand.
And, boy, who else?
Who else?
I mean, that is the problem with an ensemble cast.
They've all got skeletons in their cloth.
They're all the dice, aren't they?
I mean, you know, so many of these people, they got where they are by, you know, stabbing
people in the back, maybe.
I love that.
Yeah, me too.
Question for you.
You're a Poirot fan, I assume.
Are you going to say you're a private investigator?
You are a private investigator.
Well, that's what you wanted to be as a child, wasn't it?
That's true, I did.
So all of his murder mysteries, they set on, like,
transportation where nobody can get off and there's, like,
12 people he can accuse of doing a murder.
Because the two I know of, this and the other one we saw.
Lucky they're all on a boat because, like,
if that had been just, like, I don't know, in a street,
they could have all just dispersed.
But also, he gets on the boat and everybody's like, oh, it's Hercule Poirot, the best detective
in the world.
Time to do my murder, I guess.
It's the perfect time, actually.
Perfect time.
Because if you can trick Poirot.
You can trick everybody.
That's true, yeah.
But also, I think the point is that you can't.
Isn't that right?
Yeah, I would have killed Poirot as well.
Yeah, I guess you'd have to. I would have killed Poirot as well. Yeah, I guess you'd have to.
I would have killed Poirot first.
Yeah.
Can he fist fight?
A little bit.
He has a gun a lot of the time.
Well, yeah, you'd need one for the fist fights you're trying to avoid.
To answer your question, yeah, you know, a bit of transport,
sometimes smaller locations, like sometimes a murder takes place
in a phone booth.
Okay.
Seven, 12 other people.
Wow.
Yeah.
I think that's probably just suffocation or somebody's ribs get fucking popped because they're stuck in a phone booth. It's him and 12 other people. Wow. I think that's probably just suffocation or somebody's ribs get
fucking popped because they're stuck
in a phone booth.
He's like, I suppose you've wondered why I've gathered
you all here today. And they're like, get us out!
We'll all
admit to it. Just let us out.
Okay.
You Belgian bastard.
I've got a segment. I, an idea for a segment.
It's called DC Booze or DC News.
So you get to decide whether it's booze, like we're going to give it big booze.
Oh, not booze, like a.
Oh, it could be that.
Okay.
Or it could be like, oh, this is good news.
It should be DC Booze or DC Good News.
I'm changing it.
What do you think?
I mean, I think of booze like a celebratory thing.
So maybe it should be DC booze or DC booze.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, okay.
Because we're booing a thing because it's bad
or we're drinking some booze because it's good.
Okay, great.
I also don't know why it's DC specific
because really this could apply to anything.
Comic book booze or comic book booze?
Yeah, exactly.
Okay, great.
Here we go.
Anyways, Michael Keaton is joining Batgirl.
He's going to be his version of Batman presumably,
which I guess Batgirl is set in that universe,
or there's going to be some Flash multiverse stuff,
which means there's things that's crossing over and whatever.
He's on track to be a lot of recurring characters in various universes.
I think that they're looking, and we've talked about this before,
that they're looking for him to be the Robert Downey Jr.
of the DC whatever, like the linchpin.
You know what I mean?
I think they probably wanted him to be Affleck probably four
or five years ago, but that's not happening.
So this is what you do.
You know what I mean?
So good, I guess.
Good, I guess.
Yeah.
But are we doing is this Batgirl going to be in the Burtonverse?
Yeah, that's my question.
Yeah.
Presumably.
I mean, like, because, and again, like DC have sort of,
they've not committed to the full, you know, MCU style.
Yeah.
It's all in the same universe.
Maybe things will be said in separate things
and maybe we'll bring them all together.
Yeah.
So, I mean, maybe we're doing, in the Flash we established
there's multiple parallel timelines.
Yeah.
And this Batman, the Keaton Batman, is in a different timeline
to the regular DCEU.
And then this one is like and back in his universe,
now there's a Batgirl.
He's retired and Batgirl's taken over.
Maybe like that?
Yeah, maybe.
I think they're probably going to merge universes and just be like,
otherwise we have to open a portal every movie or whatever.
Or everything's set in the Burton universe.
I don't feel, I don't like the idea of, okay, it's a Batgirl movie.
That sounds fun, like a fun crime action caper.
Yeah.
But then also there's portals involved.
Yeah.
I would much rather than just go, okay, well, it's in the Burton universe,
so we're going to have to deal with, I don't want him showing up and being like,
well, I'm a Batman in another universe and you're a Batgirl in this universe.
But I've got a portal machine.
Exactly, yes.
You guys don't know that, but I've got a portal machine.
He's the least likely Batman to have a portal machine also.
Nah, cushion bail.
There's no supernatural shit in those movies at all.
No, that's true.
But, yeah, you're probably right actually, I guess.
Yeah.
I mean we don't really know what he's been up to besides that.
Did you stay up to date on the Batman 89 comic?
I was two in, so I haven't stopped reading it,
but I guess I have.
But no, I'm not up to date.
Okay, right.
Yeah.
Do you think he's close to a portal machine?
Doesn't seem to be.
I was going to say the 66 wouldn't have a portal machine,
but he absolutely would have a portal machine.
Yeah, yeah.
Just for one episode and they never mentioned it.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah.
He solves a major problem and then forgets about it
for any other time.
The other thing is.
Oh, they should have done Batman 66 Mirror Dimension episode.
Yeah.
He's just got a little moustache.
Well, none of you had a little moustache.
So we're getting the return also, this is for the Flash movie apparently,
of both Zod and Faora. Ohora and the actors who play those people.
Whoa, Michael Shannon and the lady, the nice lady.
Her name is pronounced, it's spelt A-N-T-J-E-T-R-A-E-U.
I've lost track.
I couldn't even visualize those letters.
I did look up her pronunciation, but I'm like, I don't know if I should attempt that because I'm a moron.
Anyways, my question is to you.
Do you think they could be the parents of this new supergirl in that movie?
Oh, yeah, maybe.
Because she's got dark hair as well, you know what I mean?
And she's got superpowers and she probably wants to be, like,
not the person whose parents tried to terraform the earth.
Maybe, like, maybe adopt a daughter.
Yeah.
And they've taught her all the wrong stuff and then she arrives on earth
and she's like, oh.
That's a mean thing to do to someone.
Learn all the wrong stuff.
Learn all the right stuff.
Yeah.
Maybe they pop out of a portal with a baby and go,
we got this baby, we reckon, we think.
No, we do.
Great.
This is all terrific stuff.
Maybe Faora could have a child with Chris Maloney's character.
Oh, I would love that.
Right?
You thought we died in that explosion,
but we all got shunted off to parallel universe.
Nothing to do but have kids, so we had a supergirl.
I could see them getting divorced, though.
Not those two, but Zod and Fayora getting a divorce
because of Christopher Maloney.
Because you see that guy and you're like, hot stuff, actually.
Yeah.
This guy's brave. And Zod would be guy and you're like, hot stuff, actually. Yeah. This guy's brave.
And Zod would be like, but I'm also hot stuff, actually.
But you'd be like, yeah, but Zod, that's because of yellow sun radiation or whatever.
It doesn't count.
This guy's just doing knuckle pushups all day.
He's fucking pure charisma, this bloke.
You've got a stupid haircut and a dumb face and you scream too much.
That Maloney character probably does like the hang upside down, do the crunches.
I would say he almost certainly would.
Yeah. He was happy to die in thates. I would say he almost certainly would. Yeah.
He was happy to die in that explosion.
He was like, I embrace this.
I'm going to make this happen, if anything.
I'm going to kiss the explosion as it approaches me.
It seems as if, though, the DC are just bringing back anyone
and everyone except Henry Cavill for some reason.
Real slap in the face to Cavill.
What's going on?
He's repeatedly said that he would definitely come back.
He's always talking about it.
And he's a good part.
He's the right choice.
Maybe he's in it.
You know what I mean?
It might also be a secret that he's in it.
But I feel also.
They brought back Ezra Miller.
He choked a woman.
Yeah.
And then I'll bring it back to Henry Cavill.
The thing about Cavill also is that, and I think he might be right,
because he could have been in, if they wanted him to be in Shazam,
he could have been in Shazam.
I mean, maybe it was a scheduling thing.
Maybe it was a scheduling problem, yeah.
Yeah.
Wild, right?
Yeah.
I mean, but also he's doing The Witcher.
He's done two seasons of that.
There's probably another couple on the way.
There's big posters for that around Melbourne.
Yes.
And they all say, destiny is a beast. And every time that around Melbourne and they all say, destiny is a beast.
And every time I see it, my brain goes, destiny is a beast.
Seafood soup is a bisque.
Is that true?
Yeah.
Wow.
That's great.
It's good to learn.
I've never had a seafood soup and I'm not interested, quite frankly,
unless you're getting it from a place like on the water.
Yeah, I'm aware of your attitude towards seafood, yes.
Do you got to do it properly, Mason?
No, I just go nuts with whatever.
Just a big seafood stick.
You're going to fart so hard you'll die, Mason.
It's not a good idea.
I don't really endorse seafood sticks.
I don't think they're good.
Okay, fair enough.
Oh, you could do, I'll do like a fish stick any day of the week.
That's like a frozen fish stick because it's safe.
Oh, fish stick.
Yeah, sure, sure, sure.
Yeah, but I'm talking like. Crab stick because it's safe. Oh, fish stick. Yeah, sure, sure, sure. Yeah, yeah. But I'm talking like.
Crab stick, no.
Yeah, I don't know.
I mean, like if you're going to get seafood like a pub,
what are you doing?
And unless it's like a piece of flake or fish.
If you're like, I'm going to try this weird fucking crayfish or whatever.
It's like, don't do it.
This is your local pub.
You'll fart yourself to death.
Anyways, what was I going to say?
But if you fart yourself to death in less than 30 minutes,
you get it for free.
So they put you up on the wall.
On the wall?
Yeah.
Terrific stuff.
I was going to say something else about Henry Cavill and Superman.
Oh, yeah.
I think Warner Brothers are afraid of Superman.
They think that he's boring and won't sell.
So they do anything else but at this point, you know?
Yeah.
The tried and true.
More Batman stuff forever.
More Batman stuff and everybody who knows Superman but not Superman,
it turns out.
Anyways.
Do they think, though, that Supergirl is more interesting than Superman?
No, I think.
Or do you think it's just a different demographic?
Well, that and, like, it's in a Flash movie with Batman,
so they can do it.
Yeah.
Do you think Henry Cavill wants to be, like,
a minor player in a Flash movie with Batman in it?
No, he'd know.
I mean, probably, actually.
Maybe, probably.
He's doing a TV show, isn't he?
Anyway, this news is just news for you, Mason, because I know you'd appreciate it.
Oh, okay.
This is Ghostbusters news.
Yes.
Because as the foremost authority on not giving a fuck about Ghostbusters, me, you are the
opposite of that.
And that is correct?
That's true.
I love Ghostbusters.
Yep.
I love comments about Ghostbusters.
Yep.
Just people's-
You love the discourse. I love the discourse around Ghostbusters. I think it about Ghostbusters. You love the discourse.
I love the discourse around Ghostbusters.
I think it's cool and normal.
Me too.
It's cool and normal for a middling franchise that they make one every decade or so on average.
When you average it out, yeah.
So this is by Ernie Hudson.
He said, I just got an email.
ErnieHudsonNews.com?
Yes, that's right.
Nice.
He says, I just got an email.
You did it, Ernie.
Thank you.
Well done.
Well done. We did an interview. I just got an email. It did it, Ernie. Thank you. Well done. Well done.
It wasn't an interview.
I just got an email.
It's my first email.
I just stopped and looked at his phone.
Five minutes.
Because we're doing another video game, he said this via Eurogamer.
They're scheduling it now to do a recording, and I'm not too sure who's going to do it.
I know me and Dan Aykroyd.
I think.
I'm not sure if Bill Murray will do anything on it.
So famously, there was a Ghostbusters game in 2009 which featured all the returning cast members,
people consider it the third movie and et cetera and so forth.
I played it for a bit.
I thought it was fine.
I like it more.
I know you do because you're the number one Ghostbusters fan.
That's true.
Obviously.
So, yeah, there you go.
I thought you'd be excited about that.
Very excited about that.
It could just be a mobile game.
Oh, yeah, yeah, loot box based mobile game.
Yeah.
Oh, you know what it will be because you can open the traps.
Oh, yeah.
You can blast open the traps.
What's in the trap?
In-game currency, I reckon.
In-game currency or like a different nozzle for your proton pack or something.
Terrific.
Different cosmetic add-ons for all your devices.
Absolutely.
Different colors for the PKE meter.
Oh, that's good stuff.
You want pink lights on the PKE meter?
Going to cost you, baby.
Well, yeah, obviously, because, you know, that's what I want.
This is also via Paul Feige.
He had something to say about.
Paul Feig?
Feig, sorry.
Paul Feige.
That's nobody.
I mean, there is somebody called that, but he's nobody famous of note yet.
If you're listening, Paul Feige, we're waiting.
Work hard.
Work harder. Come on, mate. Lift your game, alright?
Put your frickin' socks up, mate.
There was a Ghostbusters box set revealed
that's going to be released in the new year.
And it does it. It has
the three Ghostbusters films,
but not the 2016 Paul
Feige
character. Yes, absolutely correct, yes.
Who says, so, at Sony
Pictures, I know this must be a mistake.
We do have a lot of fans.
Do it in public.
That's right.
And Bill, Dan and Early were in it and it won the Kids' Choice Award
for Best Feature Film that year it came out.
So I guess this was just an oversight.
Hashtag we are real Ghostbusters.
I'm going to say it probably wasn't an oversight.
No, it definitely wasn't an oversight.
I think people, I think they've crunched the numbers and gone,
we will sell negative copies of this box set
if we put the 2016 Ghostbusters on it.
I think the people who buy physical media are generally an older demographic.
Yes.
And generally, I would say, if you're buying Ghostbusters,
you're probably a dude.
And also, you probably hate the 2016 version,
which would mean that you, yeah, all the things,
I think they definitely crunch the numbers.
Yeah.
So, but as a man who buys physical media for some reason, Mason.
For me.
For the people out there who wanted to watch the James Bond series
on streaming.
The one read is Japanese or whatever.
Yeah.
And look, I'm not someone who buys physical media
and I don't care about Ghostbusters.
I don't feel like I have a horse in the race.
I mean, that being said, I have a completely random selection
of physical stuff at this point.
It's like I'm not like, well, I've got to get the essentials
and all the great stuff.
Okay, what about this?
There's two sets of Ghostbusters DVD packs.
Okay.
One of them has the 2016 version.
One of them does not.
What do you engage in?
Because for me, if I was buying it, which I never would,
I would want the four.
Yeah, right.
Even though I don't particularly like that movie or the new one
or really any of the others except for the first one i don't think i think i would because
i've also i think i my copy of blues brothers i bought it was more expensive than buying the
double pack of blues brothers and blues brothers that's how they fucking so i bought i just bought
the first one i think i would buy ghostbusters original and Ghostbusters Afterlife individually as opposed to the three-pack or the four-pack.
Yeah, interesting.
I think I would skip two.
Having we recently re-watched them all, I would skip two
and Ghostbusters 2016, I think.
I can't see myself ever re-watching any of those movies.
But I agree, those two in the middle, I definitely wouldn't.
But I think I said this to you off air, what they should do is they should
release it in like a, the pack should be two segments.
It should be broken into two and it should be Ghostbusters,
Ghostbusters 2, Ghostbusters Afterlife, like a little break,
then Ghostbusters 2016 and then like a half a dozen like empty slots
for Ghostbusters 2016 sequels and spin-offs.
Oh, terrific.
Like upcoming, upcoming folks.
Get ready for it.
I think the way they could do this also was if they put in like a comic,
which is the universes combined.
The IDW comic where they team up.
Yeah, because people like that also, don't they?
But also, I don't even know where I put this in.
This time, though, this is important to let people know,
spoilers for No Way Home.
Oh, okay.
I have to spoil it for this segment.
But there are time codes below.
Yes.
People might know if you're doing a skip ahead.
And we're trying not to spoil it outside of this.
Okay.
So there's a big unconfirmed rumor by a few people,
including MyTimeToShine, who got some Reddit stuff right apparently.
Okay.
I can't stress enough because often when I put in a rumor,
people might be like,
don't you know that that's a rumor way of putting an unconfirmed whatever?
Because it's fun.
We love fun here at WeeklyPlanner.
We love fun.
And if you don't like fun, get out.
Shut up and get out.
If you don't like fun, we fucking hate you.
Right?
You fun-killing bunch of buzzkills.
Makes me so mad when people don't want me to have fun.
What are you, bloody right for buzzkillnews.com?
I bet you do.
I bet you invented that website.
Yeah.
Anyways, the rumor is that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield
will be back for Secret Wars.
Secret Wars in the comics is obviously where some kind of fucking monster
from wherever gets them all to a battle planet
and they all fight each other.
Yes.
Everybody fights everybody.
It's a mess.
We did it for Book Club on BigSandwich.co.
We did it, yeah.
I know you probably liked it, but I probably didn't.
No, I didn't like it at all.
I liked that one.
You liked the DC one, didn't you?
I like Crisis on Infinite Earths, yes.
But the Secret Wars, as I think we mentioned on the episode,
it was essentially just a mechanism to sell a toy line.
Yeah.
And it was just, it's the original one at least is kind of like the,
it's the comic book equivalent of just getting a bunch of action figures
and smashing them into each other.
Also, he gets the black suit there in a machine that makes anything.
That's true.
And funnily enough, there's a machine in the new Spider-Man movie
that also makes anything.
Oh.
And that's cool.
You think they're connected?
Yep.
Anyway, so.
Okay.
You think the little splotch of goo gets in the making machine?
No, the machine can do that.
It doesn't need it.
Great.
The goo shows up.
It's Christmas and the goo shows up looking in the window
and it's like, oh, maybe I'm making you a friend.
Peter Parker will be my friend.
And then Parker's just like, well, time to make a black suit
of this machine.
Easy does it.
Yeah.
Now, look, if this isn't true, which absolutely could be the case,
they would 100% be considering bringing them back.
The money that this has brought in, because I also want to talk
about this, it did another $100 million domestically in the US
this weekend, gone, right?
It also has crossed $1 billion worldwide, right?
Movies are back.
At least giant franchise movies are back.
This movie is back.
This movie is back, yeah.
And like we said earlier, everybody's sniffing around.
DC's like, can we combine some old stuff and make a billion dollars?
Exactly.
So, look, again, this is, I'm not saying it's going to happen,
but 100% these conversations are happening.
Yes.
They're working out what characters they can introduce
in what universes, how these characters can get back together.
They're doing all of it.
They're tracking Google searches for different obscure characters
and they're like, who can we add into the next one?
Exactly.
So that's fun.
Also, yeah, as I mentioned,
Spider-Man is just an insanely popular movie
and this week on the channel we're doing the biggest hits
and biggest bombs of the year, which are two of my favourite videos
to do for the year because it's just good to fucking rip into some shit,
you know what I mean?
Hell yeah.
Some stuff that I could never possibly comprehend or make.
I also should mention that it also has the highest score ever
on Rotten Tomatoes for
audiences at 99%.
And Kevin Feige
also had something to say about the Oscars this week
because they're making a push to put in the Oscars.
I read somewhere that, I can't remember
who said this, but they think that
the idea was that Marvel would have pushed
the Eternals.
The director, and it's from that particular, she won
Best Picture last year.
And has a certain ponderous quality about it.
You mean boring?
Got him!
It's that some people are saying he's deep.
Yeah.
Yeah, you're right.
But also, I mean, you know, we sort of have drifted from, you know,
Oscar contenders of decades past where like Jaws.
Exactly.
You know, it was a huge blockbuster and people,
and Jaws was I guess the first big sort of people-pleasing blockbuster
in that sort of way, right?
Every movie before that was like a very slow car chase.
It's bullets.
And then someone got shot at the airport at the end.
That's right.
Yeah, well, I've got a quote here from Kevin Feige
because he's basically saying what you're saying.
He says, I agree with Nick Mason.
Thanks, Kevin.
I hate him, but I have to, you know,
the worst guy you know made a great point.
Feelings mutual, you dumb, bald bitch.
Put another ad on, idiot.
Think about the artistry that goes into storytelling
that connects with a wide range of people
on a very emotional level.
This is to The Hollywood Reporter.
It's a good thing when people are in the theatre
and they stand up and cheer.
It's a good thing when people are wiping tears
because they're thinking on back to the last 20 years of movie going and what has
meant to them that to me is very is a very good thing the sort of thing the academy was founded
uh back in the day to recognize and i think look and i i think maybe we were probably too nitpicky
on that movie uh in our review because i genuinely thought it was great i had a really fun time with
it and we probably also said that look i i still still, I maintain I have a bit, you know,
I had a lot of fun with it but also I also enjoyed picking stuff up
Totally, yeah.
For a bit of fun.
Those two things to me, because I'm broken, they're not separate.
Not mutually exclusive.
You know what I mean?
Like I like the movie old.
I think it's terrific.
But anyways, my point is I guess, first of all,
it wasn't anything who cares.
But why shouldn't this be up there?
Yeah.
You know?
I mean, everybody saw it.
It's certainly an achievement.
Yeah.
In terms of, you know, it's a, just in terms of, like,
so many wheels within wheels, so many gears turning
and putting all that together and making it make sense
on any level.
Yeah.
It's actually pretty impressive.
Exactly, exactly.
Also, I was driving over here, speaking of Jaws,
I was driving over here and there was a bus.
There was a bus in front of me and it had an ad for Clifford
the Big Red Dog on it.
Oh.
And it said on the side, it had a funny little tagline,
it said.
What if this dog was eaten by a shark?
It said, we're going to need a bigger bus.
And I'm like, to kill the dog?
Because that's the context of the line in Jaws,
we're going to need a bigger boat to kill the shark.
You can't just slot stuff in.
We're going to kill this dog.
We're going to hit the dog with a bus.
You know how hard it is to kill a dog that big with a bus?
All right.
You're the biggest bus you have.

Wow, it is absolutely time to talk about the Matrix Resurrection.
Wow.
Resurrection.
It's back.
Listen, Mason.
Somehow the Matrix has returned.
That should be the tagline.
Anyway, just to quickly talk box office,
it has made $13 million over the weekend, which is third to both Spider-Man and then Sing 2.
Pretty close though, right?
Not at all.
Pretty close to Spider-Man.
Not close at all.
Pretty close to Spider-Man.
Spider-Man had like a $15 million weekend, right, Spider-Man?
To the movie's credit, I mean, it's an R-rated movie,
so it's obviously going to lose out to a movie like Sing 2,
and it's also going to HBO Max,
and it also beat that Kingsman prequel,
which only made $10 million.
Oh, is that out?
That's out some places.
It's not out here until the new year, but there was a screening.
I don't know.
I didn't tell you.
Maybe I told you, but anyway, I didn't go.
All right.
So The Matrix Resurrection, it's back.
What do you think the story was?
Oh, somehow The Matrix has returned.
Boy, has it.
So Thomas Anderson is a – Some people call him Tom.
Yeah, Tom Anderson.
He's this guy and he's a – well, here's the thing.
How much of this can we spoil in summary?
I mean, I've got a list of things that I'm happy to talk about in –
Okay.
I'll tell you this.
He's a man.
Yep.
Thomas Anderson is a man.
Yep.
Let's talk about things like we can say from the trailers.
Because, for example, you know that it's probably the same Neo
and you know that he also gets out because you see him come out of the pod
and the whatever.
Oh, yeah, that's true.
In the trailers.
So I think there's things that we can talk about.
Look, I'm going to say what the man's job is at the start of this movie.
And I'm going to see if people get mad at that because it's a spoiler.
Thomas Anderson in this movie is a man
he has some troubled mental health
issues. He has some mental health issues
earlier in his life. It's because he's in the
Matrix though. Well yeah I mean because it's in the
but anyway he
has trouble distinguishing fantasy from
reality probably because he's in the Matrix. Probably.
And then and so in his life
he chooses he takes
those concepts that he thought of
and he turns them into like an online game.
I think it's just a game.
Just a game called The Matrix.
But it looks like the first movie.
Like the first movie.
Sometimes.
Yeah.
So when was this movie?
We'll get into it.
When was this game released?
It said 20 years prior.
Okay.
But was it?
Because that, what is it? was it an FMV game?
Was it Night Trap?
Well, I think the idea is that the society within The Matrix
has characters and graphical capabilities
which are indistinguishable from reality.
Yeah.
And so that's the story.
And then he's like, am I in the fucking matrix?
Is this real?
Is this really the matrix doing a matrix on me?
I'm going to do a matrix right back.
I reckon I've got new push powers.
Do you see those in the trailer?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I've come out of a pod and I'm spitting chips.
Yeah.
So I,
so this time around,
only one of the Wachowskis has returned.
Lana Wachowski.
Lana Wachowski.
Lily Wachowski was just like, I'm exhausted.
I don't want to do this.
I've just been doing Sense8.
We've just been doing movies that bombed since the mid-2000s,
even if some of them are quite good.
And we've talked about this before as well,
and our friend Hollywood Pete mentioned this,
that this is probably the only movie that Warner Brothers would let
the Wachowskis do at this point.
Yeah.
I'd imagine.
So on this kind of scale.
Yeah.
And there's also like allusions to in this movie that some of this is like.
Something might be in The Matrix.
Something might be in The Matrix, but also some of this is a subtle dig
or not so subtle dig, I would say, at Warner Brothers,
who it seems as if, if I'm reading this correctly,
were going to make a Matrix movie
regardless of whether or not any of the original people were involved.
And it's pretty much said in this that that's what's going on.
And they name Warner Brothers specifically.
Would you have liked to have seen that?
What, another version of this?
A completely fresh take on the Matrix, but nobody's involved.
Neither of the Wachowskis.
Keanu's not involved.
Carrie-Anne Moss is not involved.
I mean, I don't think that's...
Like a fresh reboot.
Because this is a reboot of sorts.
Yeah.
Reboot because of The Matrix.
But it is also a sequel to all three of the originals.
Yes.
And some of the main Matrix.
As I understand it, there are no plans for another.
This isn't the start of a trilogy.
It's absolutely the start of a trilogy.
You think so?
I mean, I don't know whether they'll get it.
I don't think they will get it. You don't think the end of this movie is not like the start of something?
No, it is, but I don't think, I don't think this will do well enough to. No, that I agree with.
But what I'm saying is this is, this is a, this is a clear attempt at making more of these. Yeah.
Right. Anyways, I guess to sum up my feelings, I think there's a lot of very interesting concepts at work in this which also build
off a lot of the things that are previously not only in the movies
but also the animatrix which we looked at recently
for Caravan of Garbage.
And I think like everybody who's returning is good.
I think there's one particular new character which is good.
But I think then there's some other inclusions
which I did not care for quite frankly.
A lot of people, and I agree with, I think the action is,
it's just very run-of-the-mill.
Well, apparently.
Yeah, the original fight choreographer.
Yen Wu Ping, I think, died.
But also Lana Wachowski, I think, or both the Wachowskis,
had a specific way of storyboarding action sequences
sort of in the style of a comic book.
Did they do that this time?
No, she's changed since then.
And I'm like, maybe you should have stuck with that.
What I feel like the issue, I actually have a question for you.
Okay.
This is now the canonical continuation of this franchise,
probably the final chapter.
How do you feel about that?
Do you have like a...
Well, I think in terms of,
uh,
it being like a soft reboot,
uh,
then that's bad because it does leave a lot of things kind of open ended.
Uh,
it opens a lot of doors which were closed at the end of the last one.
And I also,
but I also think that if you could,
um,
I also think that it's interesting that it builds on the world in interesting
ways,
uh, that weren't as much in the last one.
But at the end of this movie, not to, I guess, spoil it too much,
it seems as if it's just like the end of the original one
where it's just like now things are really so bad.
So a friend of the show, Nando V Movies,
did a video about this new movie,
and I think one of the points he made was some of the CG in this movie
looks pretty average, and his question was,
is this a satirical dig at how modern movies have too much CG,
or is it just bad CG?
And the answer is probably the simplest answer,
which is it's just the average, like the budget's
kind of low-ish and it's just kind of
Is it though?
Let me take the budget on this.
My question, like a lot
of this movie feels like
is it
kind of
satirising the original
movies and what they did
to action movie culture or is it
just kind of average action?
What I did like actually about this movie is there-
What is that even?
Why?
I don't know.
But I was going to say one of the things I did like,
there are a number of sort of still shots in this movie that I quite liked.
Yeah.
It's sort of reminiscent of kind of Renaissance paintings.
Sure, okay.
Like there's, you know, there's a moment in the trailer where I think you see Thomas Anderson,
he's about to walk off a roof and everybody's sort of static and kind of, you know, they're
all, the entire crowd is sort of reaching for him and it looks very much like that.
And there's a sort of later action sequence with a kind of SWAT team and it also kind
of looks like that, you know, there's action sequences that have moved into,
sort of turned into still lifes and I think they look really good.
But if I was going to describe this movie and my review of this movie,
it would be muddled.
Yes.
In the sense that it's, the action sequences are just kind of,
they're there and they don't really.
They feel like a bit of shaky cam and kind of sloppy
and like there's quick cuts.
Yeah.
And I also feel like just to finish this one thought,
the single thought that I've had, is that what it's trying
to say to me is also muddled.
Yeah.
Like if we just want an action movie and, you know,
it just happens and there's some car chases and gunfights and, you know, it just happens
and there's some car chases and gunfights and then it ends, that's fine.
But is this movie trying to say anything?
And if so, what?
And has it done that effectively?
And I don't know if it has.
I didn't really feel like.
I've seen sort of articles, you know, since the release of this.
This is one from pcgamer.com and it says,
The Matrix Resurrections is one of the best critiques
of video game culture ever.
And I'm like, is it?
Like, and I think, and again, maybe upon a rewatch,
the various themes that people seem to have,
think have been interspersed to this movie,
maybe I'll see them and go, oh, I see there's a through line there
or something like that.
For me it was just like, okay, well, there's a scene where people ask what the matrix – there's
a bunch of people in a room, like a boardroom, and they're discussing what should be put
in a Matrix sequel.
And some people are like, oh, it's bullet time or red pills or, you know, crypto fascists
or whatever.
And I'm like, I mean, that's not –
That's satire.
That didn't really – it didn't feel like a theme
that was permeated through the movie.
It just felt like they were like, ah, just.
And again, we should be reviewing these movies in terms of what they are,
not what we hoped they would be and then they turned into.
No, I don't, I didn't really,
because I didn't really know what this was going to be going in.
Yeah, I kind of felt like this would be like a big middle finger
to everybody who has taken like the concept of being red-pilled
and associated with some, you know, some little seedy corner
of the internet where it's filled with hate or whatever.
But I feel like most people who watch this movie would not go,
well, this is really confronting for me.
I don't think they would think about it.
I think they would just not like it because there's not enough good action.
I mean, you know what, there is the bit where Bugs,
which is a character I really like,
Jessica Henwick jumps over a car at the start.
And for people, because she does have short blue hair
and sunglasses for most of this movie,
she is Colleen Wing in Iron Fist.
She's in Star Wars as well star wars also she's an ex
yeah that's right something like that and you know i i think also there's a there's strong
emotional storytelling uh to a point with like kiana reeves and carrie ann moss i think them
those two together are very interesting um it's good seeing them back together and you kind of
get the sense there was this kind of this great loss that happened between them and they're struggling to reconnect
in this just absolute nightmare reality they've been forced into.
There are a lot of also why, and we'll get to them in spoilers,
but a lot of kind of why questions that weren't answered
but also nobody seems to be curious enough to ask the questions.
I was going to say, can you give me an example,
but you obviously cannot at this point in time.
Well, yeah, we'll get to it.
But was it – it's one of the best critiques of video game culture ever,
is it?
No.
I didn't feel like – see, I didn't –
I don't even think this is about video games.
I think it's more about – if it's about anything,
it's about just like big budget like art in general,
whether it be movies or video games or books, I guess.
But I don't
feel like that i feel like maybe they should have picked one thing and really i would have preferred
if this was like minimal action and a satire and just just a strong satire okay like the whole way
through but it just didn't really feel like it was committing to anything it wasn't like a like i
guess i guess in you're right in the in the largest possible sense. In the broadest possible sense, it was about, yeah,
just art versus commercialism.
Yeah.
But is it even really about that?
I mean, I don't know.
Yeah.
This was some imagery.
So Bugs, the character, is named after Bugs Bunny.
Oh, yes.
And she is one of the characters who discovers early on who Neo is
or who she thinks is Neo at the very least.
And she is also, I guess, could be envisioned as like standing
for Warner Brothers, as in Bugs Bunny,
like dragging Neo back into this franchise.
A la Space Jam.
Yeah, a la Space Jam.
She Space Jams him essentially.
Here's something else I did like about this as well.
So the Matrix at this point, it's grown beyond what it was.
It's not like everyday boring living and then every now and then
if you do step out of line, like three agents will show up
and shoot you in the head.
It's just a fucking nightmare.
Like it's confusing.
Half of the people are probably bots.
It's so much noise and information that you can't kind of wrap your head
around anything. You can't get a clear thought in. Well, I information that you can't kind of wrap your head around anything.
You can't get a clear thought in.
Well, I mean, Thomas Anderson can't.
Yeah, but I think that's true of everybody because there's so much going on.
You don't have the time to just be like to kind of make sense of this around you.
Because everybody's always on their bloody phones.
Well, that and it's just like they've made it intentionally confusing.
Oh, that's the thought that I had earlier.
Like aggressively confusing.
I feel like, do you mean the movie or do you think the Matrix?
Well, the Matrix, but I guess both.
I think the thought that I had earlier was that.
I don't think it's a confusing movie, I guess.
Like I wasn't lost.
No, but I mean, yeah.
I guess it kind of feels like that Thomas Anderson is in control
of a video game called The Matrix just because everybody thought,
people were like, what if it was a movie?
Yeah.
But they went.
Bit on the nose.
Bit on the nose.
Let's just say it's a video game.
Yeah.
But I also, to be honest, I don't even hate that idea
that if you had this guy and he was the one and he could ruin everything
and you wanted to kind of keep him around for whatever reason, then the way that you would do that is you'd give him all the information so that if he
ever comes to that conclusion that he's in the matrix you could just tell him oh you mean like
that video game that you invented you know i think that's an interesting idea because you would
second guess yourself yeah which he obviously is doing for a big part of this movie i think i don't
think that is a terrible concept at all.
But what you're saying is what this movie is about is like we're
in a world with too much information.
It's like one of the things it's about.
Yeah, and they've built this matrix to overload us all with information.
Like if we're in the matrix, we're not going to think about the matrix
because we've got too much else going on.
And they told us also about the matrix. Sure, yeah, yeah. So you can't ever tell somebody that you think you're in the Matrix, we're not going to think about the Matrix because we've got too much else going on. And they told us also about the Matrix.
Sure, yeah, yeah.
So you can't ever tell somebody that you're in the Matrix.
Yeah.
But I also think that there's like another idea that I thought
was interesting was that there is, and this is in the Animatrix,
there has been splintering factions of the machines
and we get like glimpses of that after the last movies,
the machines turned on each like glimpses of that after the the last movies the machines
turned on each other for survival and obviously with different conflicting ideas of how to move
forward like there was there was a time of peace and then things kicked off again which i think is
also we saw in the online video game and that idea that then some of those machines splintered
off even further and are working again with humans. And they're able to create like a different and newer kind of resistance
and those machines or programs can now be recognized
as their own form of life.
And the humans themselves have recognized that,
whereas in the past that wouldn't have been the case.
And we saw even glimpses of that in the movie where you see programs
that are just like, I fucking hate this and I don't want to be part of it
and yet I'm trapped in this thing. And so I just thought like that as a concept was a really strong idea. And
it's not just all like anti-machine. Humanity has reached the point where they can see the grey area
in all of this. Do you think this movie might have been better served by being a TV series?
Maybe, yeah. I think this movie needed more space to flesh out some of this stuff.
Yeah.
I feel like the idea of like, you know, Thomas Anderson,
he created this, he couldn't distinguish reality and fantasy
and then he created this game and it is The Matrix
and maybe he really was in The Matrix.
Like that sort of level of confusion.
Yeah.
I feel like it could have been, I think if they took more time
to flesh it out, that would have, it would have felt more.
I wonder if you could have an extended version of that.
Because I think that could be genuinely interesting.
Because it felt like, I don't know, it kind of felt to me like it was just,
it had a bunch of ideas that weren't really tied together all that well
and it just sort of whipped through them quickly
and then it had some action sequences that it kind of whipped through quickly
and then we got to the end and it's like, sequel maybe?
Probably not.
What do you think?
Best movie ever or worst?
Just a few more things I want to say.
I also feel like when you're in The Matrix, whether you be a part of it,
whether you're in it or whether you're like a runner,
whether you're part of the Resistance, there's no sense of danger to you
like there was in the original.
Like you could have 1,000 people chasing you and it just seems fine.
You could have four agents shooting you at the same time and it's okay.
It doesn't seem to make sense of danger.
I'll just jump through a window and escape and whatever.
I just think all of those things which were threatening,
there wasn't a newer threat that was as interesting.
We have joked in the past about how are people going
to escape the Matrix in the modern day.
You have to do a little TikTok dance or whatever.
Yeah.
It seems to be like I don't think there's as much of a spot.
You can just leave.
Yeah.
Someone opens a thing and you leave or whatever.
It's like you go through that window and you just escape.
That's right.
Unless they close it.
All the hard lines have been –
Yeah.
And I'm not even opposed to that idea because I think that, yeah,
that things have probably –
Which seemed to be like a callback to the key maker in Reloaded,
which is where he could make an assortment of keys
and he could unlock a door, and then rather than going to the room,
it went to another part of that reality.
And it seemed like that had been expanded to the entire world
and now all the Resistance had access to it.
But why?
How did that happen?
Probably in a book.
Might be in a book, Might be in a book.
Sure.
In a book we didn't write.
Yeah. The Outer Matrix comics.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I just wanted to quickly say there's a,
the first use of bullet time in this is just like,
it looks like something from like Keanu Reeves doing a sports bet ad.
So he's like standing in front of, which I don't think he would do,
but he's like standing in front of someone and he's like,
you to me away like three or four feet. And they hold the gun up
and fire. And he just moved slightly to the side. And it's just like, if you're going to do bullet
time again, which obviously you have to, that's the first reveal of it. And then in addition to
that, they tried to do like, I guess what this movie's version of bullet time is where one
particular character is moving very quickly while everything else is moving really slow and it just doesn't look very interesting yeah there's not i don't i i do i
wonder if like this movie is kind of hamstrung in the sense that we've really done everything
in terms of like i mean do you do that you can't do the quicksilver super speed thing
you know last week we watched spider-man No Way Home in which two characters jump
into a mirror universe where one person has total control of all reality
and we're in it for a couple of minutes and then they leave
and we're like, yeah, that was pretty cool, I guess.
So, like, what is this going to do?
That's what I mean, yeah.
There are no worlds left to conquer in terms of special effects.
Well, then you make the action better.
Yeah, that's what I think.
That's what they did.
Again, it was just there's no.
At least on par with what we're seeing in a lot of movies now.
And, again, it's probably a function of having seen it a bunch of times,
but also if you were like, okay, in the dojo scene in the first Matrix,
how's that play out?
I could probably like.
Yeah.
Like I could explain move for move what happens in that.
Yep.
Or really any scene.
Do a big push.
Do a big push.
Neo's got a big push power now.
There's no, like so many, or really any action sequence or, you know,
there's, you know, in the original there might be a fight in a hallway
between Morpheus and an agent or something like that.
Yeah.
It's very, it's always really clear what's happening.
Yes, long takes.
Long takes and a lot of, you know,
you know where everybody is in the space and they feel really iconic
and memorable.
And in this I couldn't, there's a scene where some of the rebels
fight like an opposing team in a sort of an abandoned building
kind of thing.
And it's just sort of muddled.
They're all just sort of swinging and punching.
I wonder whether it was edited down and that was –
From something better.
I don't know.
I mean it doesn't seem to have been but I don't –
maybe there's like two and a half movies worth of stuff here
that they whittled down.
Yeah, but there's another – it's in the trailer.
There's a scene on a train.
Yep.
And then again it is just sort of of some of it looks kind of nice,
but a lot of it is just sort of running and shooting.
And also I'm like if you were to tell me that some of the resistance,
the new resistance characters outside of Bugs died or say didn't,
I couldn't tell you whether that is true or not true.
It's true.
Whereas if you think back to the other movies,
I know all the Resistance characters, if not
by name, by look at the very least.
Yeah.
And aside from Bugs, I don't know.
Yeah.
There's maybe a guy and a couple of girls and-
Yeah, maybe.
And then-
Two guys and a girl and a pizza per lace.
Yes.
Anyways, in summary for the non-spoiler section, I think a lot of the new ideas are strong, like genuinely.
Yeah.
But I think the action is pedestrian and the ending is whatever.
So for me this is like I think there are so many really interesting ideas
in this.
Yeah.
I just think it really, but in every other aspect it falls short I feel,
you know.
And I couldn't even say that leaving it, I was like, that was bad.
I hated it because I didn't.
I just think it's the worst one that they've made by quite a lot.
But then again, maybe in 15 years I come back to this like I did
with the sequels and I'm like, there's actually more here
than I initially thought.
Yeah, I wonder about that also.
But I can't even point to a scene though where I could go,
even when I didn't like Reloaded, I'd be like,
well, the highway chase is incredible.
Yeah.
I point to the bit where they flip over the car.
Right at the start, yeah.
Which was cool, but like.
We've seen people flip over cars all the time.
Sometimes we see people flip cars over themselves.
Yeah, that's right.
So, yeah, I don't know.
I think it just never felt like it was, I don't know,
it just never felt like it was meant to be.
Like it felt like it was set out to be some sort of strong critique
of something, but then it never actually.
I think it's just media and corporate media.
Yeah.
I think that's like the umbrella.
Sure.
And then within that you've got multiple other things going on.
But then again, I guess the question being like Warner Brothers
would never let anything genuinely subversive come out of their.
I guess not. their movie house.
Let's do spoilers.
Are you going to say worst movie ever?
No.
I mean I'm going to say best movie ever in the sense that it was not the worst movie ever.
It was nice to see Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss.
Love Jessica Henwick in it.
Jonathan Groff.
Everybody's quite quippy in this as well.
Well, I want to talk about Jonathan Groff.
Let's do spoilers.
Okay, let's do spoilers.
So I also agree with you as in like I didn't hate it,
but that is not a stirring endorsement.
I just want to also clarify that.
So it's 60 years on.
They've been keeping Neo and Trinity alive because it's something to do with.
Well, they brought Trinity back from the dead.
Yeah, she was dead.
They rewired her brain and built it back.
And it is explained that that was very costly.
Yeah.
But what does that mean?
Time.
Oh.
Time is money, makes sense.
Yeah, time is money.
That's true.
Well, I guess it's energy and processing power.
I'm assuming.
Now, specifically, we'll get to the thing you're going to say, James.
Yeah.
Specifically, why did the war keep going?
Why did the peace break down?
Because of infighting?
Yeah, I think it was infighting and I think it was also that, you know,
the resources, that being humans, are too valuable to just let them free.
So the ones that got free, right.
Yeah.
And I also thought that, and I want to talk about Morpheus as well,
the idea of what happened to original Morpheus where he became the leader
of Zion.
He's long dead, like most people from the first movies.
And he was warned that something else is coming.
There's a new, something else is brewing.
They're evolving.
You know, we need to change with it.
And he couldn't get past the idea that everything he'd believed
and been told about Neo being the one and bringing peace, that was it.
Yeah.
And I think that's also very fitting for that character,
even though we don't see that particular version,
that he would get stuck in that headspace and just go,
no, we fixed it and I will not move beyond the ideas
which have served me correctly until this point.
Did he just die of old age?
I don't even know if he's dead, to be honest.
Well, I mean, because we see a statue that is a sort of –
it's a statue to him.
Yeah, he's got his vest.
He's got his Zion vest.
But the thing is, though, Neo doesn't even ask how he died.
No.
Which I thought was odd.
Yeah.
I mean, I guess he's just dead at this point.
He'd have to be, right?
Yeah, but I mean –
Because he was at least 40 at least in the other ones.
Yeah, he's not making it to 100 in this universe.
But I mean Neo didn't even say – he's learned that the piece that he thought was going to be brokered when he went to the machine,
the central intelligence of the machine, he thought –
I would have thought that he would have thought that went forever.
But he learns more.
It's been 60 years and Morpheus is dead.
He doesn't even go, did Morpheus die in a battle?
Yeah.
Did he die of old age?
Did he, like.
Did you throw him in jail?
Did you throw him in jail?
Yeah, did he get killed by a squid?
Yeah.
But yeah, aside from that, like I loved the idea of bringing back Niobe
and she was able to get past all of the ideas of the past
and rise up and become the leader and build this, it's a new Zion,
I can't remember the name of it.
Zion 2.
IO.
IO, thank you.
And that, you know, they're growing fruit again of the digital information
available to them because of the programs that they're working with.
And I thought that's great.
And I thought so.
And Morpheus in this is a version that Neo built for his video game.
Yeah, yeah, Abdul-Mateen II.
And I think he's good in this. And I think he's also, he's not Morpheus, which is why I could let built for his video game. Yeah, yeah, Abdul-Mateen II. And I think he's good in this.
And I think he's also not Morpheus,
which is why I could let a lot of stuff go,
whereas the Jonathan Groff character,
which again I want to talk about, some of that I couldn't.
So he's essentially, if you're still here and you haven't seen it.
So Morpheus, the character we're looking at in the trailer,
so you're like, it's a new Morpheus, what's his deal?
So he is a character created by Neo within the world
of the game he created in the Matrix.
But also who looks like the version of Morpheus created in the game.
Yeah.
And because when he's, when he, and that basically they managed,
he gets out of it and he gets out of the Matrix in the Matrix,
which is the video game.
But this character was created by Neo, right?
Yes.
Or at least he thinks he did.
Yeah, so for this game he created, apparently he created a character
who combined elements of Agent Smith and Morpheus.
So I guess he did make him.
So in this game, in the story of the game within the Matrix,
he was an agent a la Agent Smith
and then he's woken up and then he becomes a resistance fighter,
I think.
Yes.
But then when Bugs meets him, he's already been turned?
Or he's already thinking outside of his programming,
which makes me think that video game characters in this world
are obviously beyond anything that we've got right now.
And so Neo created him and the ability to get to him
as a subconscious way of getting himself out of the matrix
because he needed Amorphius to tell him that he needs to get out of the matrix
but he couldn't form that thought.
Yeah, that is a very interesting concept, yeah.
But then you bring that guy in and then he can also physically translate
into the real world.
As in the post-apocalyptic real world, yeah.
As Baltheus because he's made up of tiny little balls.
And I thought that was just a terrific idea that you could
like physically embody something.
And there are some other Baltheus type characters as well.
There's at least one more.
So were they also?
They said it was recent technology as well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They also were.
Well, I was wondering, so is the video game technology in this world that more advanced or is he a special case?
I don't know.
Dysmorphia.
We don't really.
But the other thing, when we talked about this before the show,
which I don't have an answer for,
is that some of the video game looks recast.
So we see at the opening scene is like we see the Trinity opening scene
and Trinity is played by a different actor.
From the first movie, yeah.
From the first movie.
And Morpheus is played by a different actor or looks differently.
But then later when Neo goes to get out of the Matrix,
he enters a room where they're playing the original Matrix
and they're like, look, it's the original Matrix, the video game.
And it's just clips from the movie.
Clips from the movie.
With Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus.
But also like some people look different to other people
in this universe.
Like Neo doesn't look like Keanu Reeves.
He looks like an old bald guy.
I don't know whether this is just to like screw with the perception
of reality as an audience member, but I just found that muddled.
I mean, his digital self-image wasn't at all so people
couldn't find him?
Yes, that's what I'm saying.
But what I'm saying is why does the video game look different
than they were projecting in the theatre room to what Morpheus looks like
and what Trinity looks like within the game?
See, I was saying to you as well, I think the opening sequence
would have been more interesting if we're trying to be subversive
in some way, and I don't know if they were, but I think it would,
and maybe it's some sort of rights issue, like they'd
have to pay everybody again or something.
Yeah, I guess. But I think
for me the opening sequence
would have been way stronger
if instead of seeing this version
the version we see
is that it's a recast version
of Trinity in a room, she's
just done some hacking, she's communicating
with Cypher or whatever it is.
And then the police go to the heart of the city hotel
and they try and track her down and she attacks them
and there's a fight and then she escapes.
In this version, it's a recast version of Trinity
who I don't think we see again.
No.
Being pursued by different agents including Baltheus.
Yeah.
And then she doesn't escape.
She is sort of knocked to the ground and they sort of surround her. Yeah. And then she is, she is, she doesn't escape. She is sort of knocked to the ground and they sort of surround her.
Yeah.
And then,
then we,
then the action continues with bugs.
But I think it would be more interesting if the sequence we see is just
Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity.
Like it's exactly,
it's exactly the same footage,
except we insert the new agent Smith Morppheus into the scene and then we would
be what as an audience members we would be watching it going isn't this just the if this is the first
movie but some of it is different like if you did it subtly enough you'd be like
i'm especially for like long-term matrix fans you'd be like i've seen this scene so many times
and it looks it's the same but it's not quite the same.
And I don't know why.
Yeah.
But then there's the reveal.
But in this, we were like, well, this is obviously just reshot footage for whatever reason.
And there's no, we, and we only learn later that it's part of a video game.
And it's like, yeah, it's fine.
I also, I think I just figured it out because I'm an idiot.
The Morpheus in this is an agent.
He's not supposed to be Morpheus.
Neo built him in as an agent
so that's why he doesn't look like Morpheus
because he discovers that he's a version of Morpheus
he's not Laurence Fishburne Morpheus
who also exists within the video game
but it also doesn't explain why Trinity has been recast
my point is that like
he's not Morpheus
he's not supposed to be Morpheus because they'd find him
so he's an agent so Morpheus in the wasn't, he's not supposed to be Morpheus because they'd find him. Yes. So he's an agent.
Yeah.
So Morpheus in the video game also exists, but this guy also exists.
And there's also real Morpheus.
Oh.
Does that make sense?
No.
Because he's an agent.
He's not Morpheus.
Huh.
Because remember he's like, I'm an agent, but I'm actually Morpheus.
I think I've figured out who I really am.
Yeah, right, right, right.
So that's why he doesn't look like him.
Okay.
It doesn't matter.
Doesn't explain why they recast Trinity.
No, that's my point. Okay. It doesn't matter. Doesn't explain why they recast Trinity. No, that's my point.
Okay, so Jonathan Groff is Hugo Weaving's agent Smith,
and they work together.
He's the head of whatever game studio they work for.
Is it called Binary?
Sure.
Okay.
But I think this would have worked so much better if they got
Hugo Weaving back and had those two characters who you've seen
beat each other to death.
And they just have an awkward work relationship.
And they're just working together.
Yeah.
But otherwise it's just like, oh, he's Agent Smith, is he?
And he's got a certain, like Jonathan Groff,
who I think, is he a musical guy or something?
Yeah, he's in Hamilton and he's in Mindhunter.
He's terrific.
Oh, yeah, of course.
He's Mr. Mindhunter.
He's Ford Escort or whatever his name is.
Yeah.
Holden Ford.
There it is. But, yeah, he's got that sorthunter. He's Ford Escort or whatever his name is. Holden Ford. There it is.
But, yeah, he's got that sort of glossy.
He can do that sort of glossy kind of he's emotionless,
but he's also insane.
Like I think that look works for him.
But, again, yeah, it's a guy we've never met before.
Doing sun lines.
He's supposed to have this deep past with Neo.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Again, but, I mean, you you know and he's also like not aware
what's going on initially because they're keeping him alive i guess for the same reason they're
keeping neo alive because you know they're getting some use out of him i guess because he you know
something with processing power probably i don't know yeah but it's yeah you're right the but again
like you know with a lot of hollywood stuff it could just very well be Hugo Weaving was busy
or he was stuck in Australia while they were filming
in San Francisco or Canada or whatever it was.
Whatever was going on, yeah.
Yeah, I thought that was, yeah, and just like any call.
But it also doesn't rule out you record all his audio in a,
I mean, we've just seen that Unreal demo.
Yeah.
You put him, if you put him in the shadows,
you had Hugo Weaving record all his audio in his house in Sydney
or whatever.
Get away with it.
Yeah, I think you could get away with it.
Just use old footage of Agent Smith and sort of, you know.
Piece it together.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't know.
It may not be great, but some of this isn't great.
But I just think also you missed a trick to see those two
working together again.
Because they do work so well together.
And even things like, and you could have even,
they don't do this, but he looks different
because Neo looks different to everybody.
But even him is like, he's aware of how he looks.
He's not like, I see myself as I used to look.
He's like, this is my new face. This is what I look like. What do you think? Hello, Tom. And he's calling him Tom. And I'm like to look he's like this is my new face this is what i look
like what do you think hello tom and he's calling him tom and i'm like that's weird i don't like
that and it just as a as a the weirdest workplace tension ever just maybe these two guys and they
just you know they know that they don't like each other but they they're not quite sure why and as
the audience would be like this could become a really brutal fight yeah but it
just never does like it sort of does i guess yeah but like it we'd watch all these opening sequences
and yeah we'd have this this you know smith guy just being like and i need you to do this and
we've got a way just a just a meeting would become really tense yeah totally pleasant now but yeah
you're right it doesn't work with yeah with neo a character we're very familiar with, and just some guy.
And there's a moment where they have a big punch-up,
like earlier on in the movie, and the way that that fight ends,
Neo just does his big push power and he, like, flies through a wall
and then he just doesn't come back into the room.
And, like, afterwards the fight they're standing there and they're like,
man, this is a heck of a whatever.
And I'm like, you better fucking move because he's, like, isn't he
coming back? That guy who could kill you
probably? Who's also got time speed
up powers also for some reason?
Neil Patrick Harris plays
I guess this version of the architect.
The newer version. It's not the architect, it's a
newer program.
It's a newer program called The Analyst because he's
Thomas Anderson's therapist.
He gets great results in terms of batteries.
And he's working for somebody else.
He's working for the suits who we would maybe meet in the sequel.
That big screaming face, I reckon.
You know, the big screaming face that screamed at Neo?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Maybe he was the big screaming face.
He said he was there when Neo died.
Yeah, right.
So he could have been anything, I guess.
But, yeah, that was all right, I guess, as an inclusion. But also sort of, again, it's this, it felt like this very muddled
mechanism of like, well, you've got bullet time,
but I've got actually super bullet time,
so no matter how fast you move, I actually can move faster.
But then at the end it's just like, oh, you can move faster.
Yeah.
Okay, how?
Was it the power of love again?
I think it was. I think them together, yeah. At the power of love again i think like at the very i think
them together at the end of revolutions at least the mechanism for defeating smith was
neo connects to the the the machine mainframe and then when smith absorbs him he connects to
the machine mainframe and he gets annihilated or what have you yeah at least that that that
system was set up and kind of paid off yeah Yeah. But I didn't understand. He just walked into the room and was like, hello, I'm also fast.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And there was no, again, it's just Neo and Trinity believed
in themselves more.
Yeah.
They found each other.
It was a little bit forced dyad from Rise of Skywalker.
Look, I don't know, but maybe it's the Trinity literally
of those three together oh which could mean he
could do that i'm not sure i'm sure people will send us their theories and reasonings but i don't
think there's a very clear understanding of why this happens yeah and again it's sort of it to me
it erases kind of the the tension of the you know the final action sequences of like well neil patrick
neil patrick harris's character holds all the cards and he can, you know, he makes an agreement with them that he won't harm them.
If Trinity wants to leave, he'll let them go.
But then he's like, actually, I've changed my mind.
Okay, well, there's some tension.
But now how are Neo and Trinity going to get out of this?
I guess they just are.
They're going to get on a motorbike and drive away.
Do big push powers.
I mean, Neil Patrick Harris could probably just stop them,
but he doesn't again.
Oh, because he's distracted by Smith.
Agent Smith.
Smith does a big punch in him.
But why doesn't the analyst powers work on him?
I don't know.
That's what I'm saying.
Also, the French guy turns up screaming at one point.
The Merovingian, yeah.
And I thought, wow, that's really interesting to find out what happened to this guy.
He survived multiple versions of the Matrix, and he used to be within the Matrix,
and he was somebody, and he was all about high society and art.
And when he turned up, some of the people he seemed to be with were also remnants of
the old Matrix.
And I think some of them were actually from those movies.
I'm pretty sure there were some returning.
Look, I couldn't tell you about returning actors, but I think they're all, they're supposed
to be his henchmen.
Yeah, that's right.
And, but then he just starts screaming and it's like, it's, you can't understand him.
Yeah.
Again, this movie again is in some parts for me is a victim of,'s you can't understand him yeah again and this this movie again is in
some parts for me is a victim of if you don't have the best sound system in your cinema yeah or you
don't you're not watching at home with subtitles maybe you don't understand what's happening you
right it was something about we used to have art and we used to have books and we used to have music
and theater and what have you but now it's all sequels and blah, blah, blah. Oh, I get it. Yeah. That's what the movie's about.
Yeah, yeah, but also, I mean, we know.
I kind of feel like anything this movie was trying to say
has been said better by YouTube essay, like video essays
about similar things.
Yeah, and also in these movies.
Yeah, in other movies in this franchise.
Yeah.
Even like the idea of like a new thread in this where a lot of,
like half, maybe half the people are bots and you could be living
with one and you might know something's not right but you can't tell
because they're AI and you're as close to human as you can be.
But then they all get zombified and then there's like a crowd
swarming thing.
Like that is not interesting or it's not darn interesting.
Not much is done with it
interesting other than they use them as like bombs at one point yeah which is which i feel i've seen
somewhere else uh as you're thinking of fast and furious and the car zombies that's what it reminded
me of yeah no you're right it was yeah maybe it was yeah but i didn't think that was a bigger
threat than three agents who could beat you to death with one hand you know know. But I did find it interesting that they gave Trinity,
because I'm pretty sure her kids were not real in this as well,
they give her a family and she's like,
I don't even know if I wanted a family.
I turn around and I'm stuck in this and I don't know,
like I can't do my own thing.
And, again, it's about the noise and you can't think.
And she strikes me as a person or they paint her this way where she never
wanted this and they gave it to her and then at the end you see because she punches Neil Patrick Harris.
She punches her husband and kids.
Yeah, yeah.
She punches them into the ground, through the ground.
But just like.
She does that thing on one of her kids where she flicks her fingertips
into their throat and they go.
But she's a good person.
And so they know by giving her a family that even if they're fake she won't break
free of that yeah right and she's mad because they did that to her yeah and i think that in itself is
a really interesting concept where they took something they took a floor of hers and just
completely like trapped her and they know neo would never try to escape as long as he gets an
unlimited supply of little coffees he's having a little coffee in a windowsill.
Ooh, espresso at a counter.
Yum, yum, yum.
So it kind of just becomes the end of the first movie
at the end where Trinity can fly because she's also the one
because of the power of their love together and whatever.
And Neo's like, who's doing this?
You're doing this?
And just like, I'm doing it.
I think the biggest laugh in the theatre we got,
the session that I saw it at, was when Neo tries to fly
and he's just like, no, not working.
And that was fun.
That was a fun little thing.
Yeah, sure.
I don't disagree.
He's good.
I mean, they're both good.
They're terrific.
Yeah.
You know what?
I think I wanted more boardroom scenes.
Yep.
Just more scenes of him i want i again like and again i'll i'll never be happy and this is this is the sequel to a movie that came out 20
years ago and it's been done to death with video essays and people have watched it a hundred times
and we've all got we've there's there's you know matrix Online has its own continuity and there's all the Animatrix stuff and probably comic books
and all kinds of stuff.
Most people probably aren't going to get the combination
of those factors into a sequel and that's the thing that they wanted.
Yeah.
But I kind of would have liked just Keanu Reeves in a room
with all these people from different generations talking to him about what they think the Matrix is.
Honestly, that's the kind of stuff that I found the most interesting
where he sits down with like Naomi, maybe,
and you see a very brief flash of her as a little bit older
as how probably old Jada Pinkett Smith is now
and she's watching the machines fight each other.
And I'm like, I would love to see that.
Like show me more of that.
And she's talking him through how, you know, you didn't do it.
It wasn't for nothing.
And I appreciated that because it wasn't like The Force Awakens
where it's just like, it's just the same.
Like, we're doing the Rebels and the whatever.
Yeah, right.
She's like, no, look how far we've come.
And she's explaining it and you're seeing it.
And I'm like, this is genuinely fascinating that they didn't just go,
yeah, we're staying in Zion.
We call it New Zion, Zion 2, and it's the same,
and there's a council and fucking whatever.
That's all great, like genuinely.
And like you mentioned, the boardroom scenes and just the idea
that he's got this horrible mate who's just a bot,
who's essentially an agent, who's just designed
to just fucking waterboarding with nonsense all day.
Like that's really interesting as well.
Yeah.
I would have just liked, yeah, just like the, and then, you know,
they would never have made it, but like just minimal action and just,
just long conversations about what people think the matrix is now or, you know,
what, what it should be in the future or that, that kind of stuff.
I don't know.
I also thought, and I think this is the part that I enjoyed least of all about this movie,
is they turn up to Neil Patrick Harris' house at the end and they, like, punch his jaw off
and then they give him his jaw back because they've got unlimited Matrix powers.
Why do they have unlimited Matrix powers now?
Because he did in the end of the first one, sort of.
I mean, it's beyond that, but, you know, they can do anything.
Why do they have more powers?
Is it because they embraced the duality of themselves and they were finally connected
in a special way? Yeah, and they can. So why did that never happen before? Because they embraced the duality of themselves and they were finally connected in a special way?
Yeah, and they can.
So why did that never happen before?
Because they embraced the duality of themselves, et cetera.
They both have it or whatever.
Yeah, yeah, they're both the one now, I guess, yeah.
Yeah, and then they just went, we're going to remodel the world
and we're going to give it rainbows, which I assume is like, you know,
a nod to like a lot of the people who make these movies
and what these movies have become, you know, to different communities.
But then they just fly off and it's like, yeah,
that's what happened in the first one.
They said, I'm going to show people whatever and then he flew off.
Yes.
And I know it's like slightly more advanced because they can do
slightly more things but like, all right, great.
Like you're going to change the whatever again.
Why could they just defeat him?
I don't understand.
Why could she cut his throat and then bring him back?
Because they had more abilities.
Don't you think they had more abilities? think it was because they had more abilities. Don't you think they had more abilities?
Probably it's because they had more abilities.
They should have spelled that out.
They should have been like, we can do this because we have more abilities.
Yeah.
Neil Patrick Harris.
Neil Patrick Harris.
So I've got some reviews here, unless you've got some other things.
No, no, no.
Look, I have some other rambling thoughts.
I'll probably bring them up another time.
Please do.
From David who says, hashtag weekly planet pod,
everything with Neo and Trinity equals good,
everything else equals bad.
C-Ray says, Merovingian subtitles.
That's it.
And Benson Maid says, go see West Side Story if you get the chance.
Unlike Maestrix 4, it's easy to follow the plot.
However, Sophie Arista sings a great rendition of Wake Up.
Yeah, that's the end song.
So she's in a band called Brass Against.
There is a video of her on stage on like a live show
and she is pissing on someone.
So don't.
Oh, that's not great, is it?
Don't Google that.
Don't Twitter that.
Wait, are they cool with it?
Yeah, no, I think so, yeah.
Okay.
I don't know the context of it.
Maybe a series of escalating dares.
Maybe.
Yeah.
Well, there you go.
Let him put that in the credits.
What else?
God, this movie.
This movie.
Worth a watch, I guess, yeah.
Maybe we just didn't get it.
Maybe we didn't get it.
But the things about it that I didn't like were not.
Things you need to get.
Yeah, it's like the whatever action and whatever.
That's like, I love the concepts of this genuinely.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Maybe it's too woke.
It is.
But again, I don't think anybody who like.
No, I don't think.
Is anyone complaining about that?
Probably.
I think they're obviously the standard people who complain about this sort of stuff.
Or like there are people, there are definitely people out there
who are like, I didn't like this.
And then people quote tweeting that and being like, yeah,
because it's too woke.
Yeah.
You haven't seen it.
Yeah.
I think this is too woke.
Also, they're all woke.
They're all like that.
Yeah.
They're all, I mean, this was not as, yeah.
There should have been more.
Like I think if you somehow combined Space Jam and this movie,
to me there would be enough like there would be enough satirical content
about how an algorithm is creating entertainment these days.
The Merovingian dunks on LeBron James.
The Merovingian dunks on LeBron James, exactly, yeah.
The agents are in.
They're on Space Jam, right?
Well, maybe this is set're on Space Jam, right?
Well, maybe this is set within the Space Jam mainframe. I hope so.
Yeah, so there you go.
Look, yeah, I'm disappointed.
I'm not going to lie.
Maybe we should gather our thoughts and then have like a little segment
at another time where we just go.
Why don't we give it ten years?
Yeah, let's give it ten years.
We'll see everybody in ten years.
Yeah, look, I would love to turn around and be like,
actually, there's so much about this that i that i maybe
didn't you know that i missed the first time but i think the the reason i think the reason that i've
picked up on all the thematic elements of the previous movies one because there are some great
videos about it sure yeah but also because I've watched those movies for great action sequences
so many times that eventually the stuff around it has kind
of slowly seeped in, whereas this one, nothing really jumps out.
Yeah.
Also, like we said, they can just escape out of a window or whatever.
Could have been worse, though.
It could have been in 3D.
Could have been in 4D.
Wow.
I'd love that, actually.
Smell-O-Vision.
Smell-O-Vision.
Anyways, I think that's pretty much it for our review. That's pretty much everything, yeah. Should we move to the next segment of the show? Yes, which is called What We 4D. Wow. I'd love that actually. Smell-o-vision. Smell-o-vision. Anyways, I think that's pretty much it for our review.
That's pretty much everything, yeah.
Should we move to the next segment of the show?
Which is called What We Readin'.
Yep.
What We Gonna Read.
I should do the theme song.
I have not lined that up in any which way or loose.
God damn it, Chad.
People like that about me though.
No, they do.
They like my spontaneity.
And by that I mean when I forget to do a thing.
They like little songs you do.
They do, don't they?
They like your little songs.
I'm doing a thing. They like little songs you do. They do, don't they? They like your little songs. I'm doing a thing.
Westworld.
Very good.
Now, I said I'd stop doing that when the next season of Westworld starts.
There's a trailer this week.
Uh-oh.
Uh-oh.
But, you know, doesn't mean I'm going to commit to that.
What if they were never to produce another season of Westworld? You'd be committed to this bit, and I call it doesn't mean I'm going to commit to that. What if they would never produce another season of Westworld?
You'd be committed to this bit, and I call it a bit very loosely, forever.
You think I can't do that?
No, you could.
You could.
I'm just saying it would lose whatever remaining grounding
in reality it had or it currently has.
That would go entirely.
Absolutely.
I'm just checking on the date on that.
It just says this is a reel for the 2022 slate. Summertime. It says season four, I'm picking up, blah, blah, blah, entirely. Absolutely. I'm just checking on the date on that. It just says it's in the scissor reel for the 2022 slate.
Summertime.
It says season four, picking up, blah, blah, blah.
The video also confirms that.
Yep, no, I don't know.
I didn't say it.
Anyway, sorry, you were saying, Mason.
Oh, you know what?
I have started listening to a podcast.
Wow.
I was listening to it on the way here, actually,
that is very near and dear to our hearts
and hopefully some of our listeners as well.
It's called Hayley Wood.
Okay.
And it is a podcast about the time in the 90s that Bruce Willis
tried to buy a town in Idaho.
Did he?
That's what the podcast is about.
But here's the thing.
It was recommended to me and I looked at it and I'm like,
and I went to Spotify.
It's on Spotify.
It's on iHeartRadio I think.
But I looked at it and I went, oh, this is a joke, obviously.
This is a parody.
It's sort of an alternate reality narrative where Bruce Willis attempted
to buy a town in Idaho.
But he did.
That's the twist.
Well, it's because it's out of the way.
It was like non-
because he already had a home in Idaho.
Did he want, like, everyone to leave the town?
No, I think he wanted-
like, he sort of started-
I'm only a couple of,
it's an eight-episode series.
I'm like two in.
But he already had a home in Idaho.
Yeah.
And I think other people, Schwarzenegger does and Stallone does,
I think.
Because it's like as far from Hollywood as you can get in terms of like,
you know, nobody cares if you're famous really and et cetera.
Yeah.
But it's sort of about, he sort of attempted to like buy a bunch of stuff
in this town and like sort of improve it and all this sort of stuff.
But he came up against, you know, the press.
Yeah.
And this is weird.
You're doing a weird thing.
Yeah, exactly.
And he sort of tried to do it a bit in secret and kind of, you know,
the press got – he sort of tried to do it through, you know, some shell companies
and the press got wind of it and he got mad at them.
And it also sort of charts his sort of his rise in Hollywood.
Okay.
So it's like early 90s Bruce Willis.
Yeah, like late 80s, early 90s of like moonlighting and all this sort of stuff.
Thus far it seems to be like parallel narratives of what he's doing in Idaho
but also like what sort of led him to hate the press
and hate the Hollywood life and all this sort of stuff.
I think if you're trying to buy a town, people are allowed to ask questions.
I think they are too, yeah.
I think that's absolutely justifiable.
In episode two he buys a building and he puts like a sort of just
like a business centre or like a shopping area building
and he like leases it out to like a jeweller and a furniture store
and all this sort of stuff.
But it also happens to be the building that the local newspaper is in
that broke the stories that he was trying to buy stuff in Idaho
and then when they went to get their lease renewed, he's like, nah.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Wow.
Normal stuff.
Normal stuff.
Normal stuff from a normal man.
Normal stuff from Bruno.
That's right.
When is he going to bring back Bruno, his musical alter ego?
He might already be back and we don't even know it yet.
The re-return of Bruno.
This is from the HBO Max Westworld Wiki.
Unnamed sources within the company indicate a project
with air date in May of 2022.
Oh.
Think of that, make of that what you will.
Now, I just finished now.
I'm not quite ready to talk about it, but don't look up.
That didn't stop you from talking about the Matrix Resurrection.
It didn't stop me.
No, I saw that on Tuesday or Monday.
I can't, Monday I think. So I've had, I saw that on Tuesday or Monday. I can't.
Monday, I think.
So I've had a week to sit on it and go, oh, yeah.
But what was I going to say?
So, yeah, I watched Don't Look Up, which is Adam McKay's Netflix. So that's Adam McKay and it's got DiCaprio and various.
Who else is in it?
Jennifer Lawrence is in it.
What's his name from Dune is in it.
Meryl Streep's in it.
The other guy's in it.
And it's about an asteroid that's going to crash into Earth,
but a lot of people are like.
It's a parallel for like climate change and whatever.
I fucking loved it.
I thought it was terrific.
Like I'd heard kind of like, yeah, it's all right and whatever.
Yeah, yeah.
But I just thought it was like it's very darkly funny
and a lot of the characters are like an obvious, you know,
very thinly veiled.
Yeah. You get a very thinly veiled version of like Mark Zuckerberg
in this played by Mark Rylance who's like a version of like
the Apple CEO.
Yeah, right, right.
I just thought I found it very funny and also like a lot of –
it felt real.
Like there's a lot of lunacy in it.
Yeah, right.
But it did feel like, oh, yeah, the world is run by corporate sociopaths
and if this happened, this is not like,
the way that this plays out is not out of the question.
Because the title, the premise of the title is.
Yeah.
Is that a spoiler?
Not really.
It's just kind of like there's people who don't believe the asteroid's coming
or that they believe it and it's good.
It's good for the economy for various reasons.
And it's just like.
Okay, I should definitely check that.
Yeah, look, I can't, honestly, I can't recommend it enough.
And look, again, it's not particularly subtle.
You won't be like, oh, what's this trying to say?
It's very obvious, but I just think there's a couple of moments
where I genuinely laughed out loud.
There's a moment where, I won't spoil who,
but a particular Avenger shows up for a very brief cameo,
which I thought was very funny and felt very like Matthew McConaughey.
He's just like, why don't we all meet in the middle?
And it's like, it's a fucking asteroid.
Like there's no middle when an asteroid has got to hit the earth.
You know what I mean?
I just, I thought it was terrific.
I always, I think a good metaphor for climate change
is very similar of like you're in a car with a bunch of people
and the steering wheel's broken and it's driving towards a cliff and you're like,
you should hit the brakes.
And somebody's like, let's tap the brakes.
I mean, we're still going over the cliff, aren't we?
That's right, yeah.
Also, I'll probably talk about that more on Suggestible,
which the final episode is also this week.
Nice.
Where we do our wrap-up for the year of stuff that's not like big box office noise.
This is what we do here.
Yeah.
I was going to watch Jupiter Ascending, but I didn't get around to it.
Sure.
Maybe you should.
But also I got my son for Christmas because it's been Christmas here.
It's been Christmas.
A number of things.
But it's been Christmas most places.
Team Sonic Racing.
Because you were looking for a kind of.
Yeah.
Like it's basically Mario Kart, but it's not as good.
Like it's not.
It doesn't control as well.
But your son hasn't been well behaved enough to get Mario Kart. No, we have Mario Kart. We it's not as good. It doesn't control as well. But your son hasn't been well
behaved enough to get Mario Kart. No, we have
Mario Kart. We've played it to death. But
it's still fun. It's a fun kart racer.
You pick the different characters and whatever. I also got
for myself as a KK gift,
I got Sonic Colors, which a few people
recommended as a Sonic game to get, which is a mixture of
2D and 3D. And it may not be the best.
A lot of people recommended Sonic Mania,
which is more like the original ones, but I already have that.
So, yeah, I've been playing some.
I haven't played Sonic Colors yet, but Team Sonic Racing.
James.
My son and I have been playing.
It's good.
Snake Eyes.
We forgot to talk about Snake Eyes.
Oh, my God, Mason.
Can we squeeze it in?
I don't think we can.
Before the end of next week.
Before next week.
Can we do a special episode?
Oh, a midweek episode of Snake Eyes.
Yeah, we can do that probably.
Unless either of us gets busy. Yeah, and obviously it's a pretty big week as is coming up toweek episode of Snake Eyes. Yeah, we can do that probably. Unless either of us gets busy.
Yeah, and obviously it's a pretty big week as is coming up to the end
of the year.
But keep your eyes on that feed.
That's right.
Keep those snake eyes on that feed.
Your two slithery eyes.
Yeah.
Wow, that's interesting.
All you snake guys out there, snake guys and gals, snake gals.
I've got so many opinions.
Stephen, snake gals i got so many opinions steven snake gals oh good stuff anyways what's the next segment except it's letters so i'm gonna play oh there's
a great payoff joke in the post credits of like there's two pictures and no don't look up the
second one is a really good payoff i felt yeah anyways go on we didn't talk about the matrix
resurrection post credits but we don't need to because it's not anything.
Yeah, I heard there was one and I just went, nah.
Nah.
Anyway, let's do letters.
Yep.
The classic one was letters, oh letters, we love you.
Some letters, they're only a take away.
I know they're here right now.
We're going to do letters.
Wow, I want to do letters.
And if you want to do letters too,
you can hashtag
Weekly Planet Pod
on Twitter
or go
weeklyplanetpod
at gmail.com.
Send a Gmail
over to Nick Mason's
personal Gmail.
Gmail.com.
Gmail.com.
Yeah, just email
anybody at gmail.com.
It'll get to him.
He'll find his way.
It's like one of those
Santa's, you know,
those letter boxes.
Yeah, I'll get it eventually.
It'll get to him. And I'll get you eventually. Wow, man. I've got a long list. Wow, man.'s, you know, those letter boxes. Yeah, I'll get it eventually. It'll get to him.
And I'll get you eventually.
Wow, man.
I've got a long list.
Wow, man.
Yeah, you and everybody else.
Okay.
Am I at the top or the bottom or somewhere in the middle?
I'm going to get you.
Okay.
I know that.
This is from Gavin.
Hello, Gavin.
He's emailed in.
Subject line, thinking about the weekly planet behind a dumpster before my brother's wedding.
Okay.
Hey, James and Mesa.
Messaging you while very excited two hours before my brother's wedding. Okay. Hey, James and Mace, I'm messaging you while very excited, two hours before my brother's wedding,
but for some reason thinking about the podcast.
Just wanted to ask, what's your favourite romantic subplot
in a comic book or action movie?
Oh, wow.
And can I be the official best man sending tweets
behind a dumpster of the pod?
Sure.
Yeah.
Do you reckon he's punching a dart back there before the reception
or whatever?
Yeah, I reckon.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Or vaping?
Yeah, or eating garbage.
Yeah, he could be eating garbage.
Probably eating garbage, actually, yeah. I can just say, wait for the reception. There'll probably be some food there. Yeah, I reckon. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or vaping. Yeah, or eating garbage. Yeah, it could be eating garbage. Probably eating garbage, actually, yeah.
I can just say, wait for the reception.
There'll probably be some food there.
Yeah.
I think.
Yeah.
I mean, you can't go past Lois and Clark in any...
Oh, I guess in any medium.
Any medium.
Not any medium, but most of the mediums are there.
Yeah, okay.
That's a good one.
Always pretty good.
How do you feel about a Peter Parker, Mary Jane in the original Spider-Man trilogy?
I thought Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had a good chemistry.
Comic book or action movie?
Action movie.
Yeah.
How do you feel about Under Siege?
When that woman jumps out of the cage.
Yeah, it seems like I was like, I'm just a cook.
Yeah, that's pretty good.
I'm just a cook.
That's very romantic.
And I might be a real sex criminal.
Yeah, that's good romance, I think.
I mean, best comic book romances, obviously,
are Reed and Sue from the Fantastic Four.
Well, that has yet to be translated to the movies, I think,
in any proper sense.
I don't know, does that dance?
Remember, does that dance?
It does dance, yeah, that's true.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's a good movie, I reckon.
I think it's a very good movie.
Those are some good examples.
I'm trying to think of an action movie.
I guess some people would say The True Lies, I guess.
Oh, yeah, okay, yeah, all right. And that, you know, some people would say The True Lies, I guess. Oh, yeah, okay.
And that.
It's got the striptease as well, I guess. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
If you were so inclined.
What else?
Neo and Trinity.
That's a good one.
I feel it's more believable in this one than it is maybe even is
in all the previous movies.
Maybe their chemistry has grown between themselves.
Yeah.
You felt like they missed each other and enjoyed being together.
Yeah.
Can't fault him.
He also should have cut his hair.
It's weird.
It's giving him John Wick hair.
I don't like it.
No, I like it.
It's a different universe, man.
He just looks like John Wick.
He even dresses like him.
It's true.
I don't know.
Just thought it was strange.
Yeah.
Anyways, I've got one here from Eddie who says,
hashtag Wick with Manipod.
Ooh, so having covered the Animatrix and it being a Batman heavy year
next year, I reckon you could take a look at Gotham Knight's animations,
hashtag work with Manipod.
Have you seen those?
No, what is that?
So in between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight,
it was like an Animatrix of Batman vignettes and with different animators and whatever.
And again, it's Warner Brothers,
so it's probably where they got the ideas from.
And it's a number of little Batman stories
that are very loosely connected to the Batman Begins universe.
Oh, I see.
But they're a little bit more fantastical.
There's like, he fights a guy with a...
Yep.
Does he generate a portal machine?
Probably generates and makes a portal machine, yeah.
It's cool.
I like it a lot.
I remember liking it a lot.
So I think it was good fun.
Nice.
So, yeah, I'd like to look at that because we're probably going
to do the Dark Knight trilogy this year, I'd imagine.
Gotham Knight or Gotham Knights?
What was it called?
Yeah, I think it might be.
I remember the cover, actually.
I think it's Gotham Knight. Yeah, Batman Gotham Knight. Yeah. Yeah called? Yeah, I think it might be. I remember the cover, actually. I think it's Gotham Knight.
Yeah, Batman Gotham Knight.
Yeah.
Yeah, so it came out in 2008, so it was just before.
Yeah, I do remember that.
Okay.
Yeah.
I don't think I ever watched it, though, which is interesting.
Yeah, so the Japanese animation studios, so in between Batman and the Dark Knight,
the segment filmed, yeah, so it's supposed to be, it's not,
but it's supposed to be, and it's got Kevin Conroy and whatever.
Anyway.
All the greats.
What's next, Mason?
James, this is an email.
I love email.
From a different person.
Oh, yeah.
You can even believe it.
I don't.
I don't believe it.
Wow.
This is from Retro Prawns.
Oh.
Subject line, Metroid vasectomy.
Hi, James and Mason.
Just want to say thanks for the great content that's been keeping me occupied while I recover
from my second vasectomy.
Okay.
My first one failed because my balls are too powerful.
Doctor's words, not mine.
Anyway, while I've got you, with Metroid Dread launching a couple months ago,
have either of you played it?
I haven't.
I have not, no.
Neither of us played it.
Just curious who you think could potentially play Samus in a movie adaptation,
given that Sigourney Weaver is like 70 now.
You could still give it to her.
She could still do it.
That sounded rude.
I didn't mean like that.
Yeah, I see.
Can I please be the official double vasectomy guy of the pod?
I think we might even have one. We've had a lot of vasectomy emails. That's given me
spores about my double vasectomy.
Oh. I think it'd work
first time for me. Yeah, okay, cool. I don't think my balls
are that powerful. I understand. Sure, sure, sure.
Yeah.
Great
question. Yeah.
Was Sigourney Weaver ever in the running?
Maybe if they were making it in like the 80s or 90s. Yeah, right.
I think, well, I just saw her in Don't Look Up,
but Jennifer Lawrence I think could be good.
Jennifer Lawrence would be good.
You know, she can do action because she did the Hunger Games.
Yeah, yeah.
What about Florence Pugh?
Yep.
We're just going to name famous blondes, aren't we?
Sure.
What about Elizabeth Shue? Because it rhymes with Florence Pugh. Yeah. What about Florence Pugh? Yep. We're just going to name famous blondes, aren't we? Sure. What about Elizabeth Shue?
Because it rhymes with Florence Pugh.
Yeah.
What about Elizabeth Banks?
Yeah, okay, sure.
I think she'd be cool.
What about Emily Blunt?
Not blonde, but could be blonde.
Could be blonde.
And also doesn't necessarily have to be blonde,
but also does future action sci-fi stuff also.
You have to be able to fit in the Metroid suit.
You don't have to.
So you have to have those big bulbous shoulders. Or CGI. You don't have to fit into anything. You don't have to be able to fit in the Metroid suit. You don't have to. So you have to have those big bulbous shoulders.
Or CGI.
You don't have to fit into anything.
You have to be able to fit in the suit.
Yeah.
You have to be able to roll into a ball.
You have to be able to just contort yourself into the ball
and then spit around and roll on the floor.
Yeah.
I didn't get that game because I'm not a huge fan
of Metroidvania-type games.
I don't like all the backtracking and the maze work
that a lot of them have
is the thing I am
but the mechanic is
it's called Dread because there's a sort of
a few of them
you get stalked by this kind of
sort of robotic creature
that you can't
quad pedal
you can't hunt it
it hunts you but you can only destroy it under certain circumstances.
I'm like I love a Metroidvania but I don't love that mechanic.
Oh, see, that's the bit that I liked.
All right, okay.
But again, I haven't played it.
Oh, we should play.
James, we should buy a copy together.
Yeah.
And then I can play all the, I can do all the backtracking.
Yep.
And you can fight the.
I would love that.
So it'll just be me just in a room.
Oh, okay, collect the key.
I'm like, James!
James, the monster's here!
And then I'll throw you the controller.
And then you run from it for a while.
I played them a little bit, but not that much.
But I quite like the first-person shooter-y ones.
Yeah, okay, right.
Yeah, and I wouldn't mind if they remade a bunch of those.
I think they also have the Metroidvania elements
But I think I find it less confusing in a first person perspective maybe
I don't know
Anyways
And also like there's some
Metroidvania has done like
Been done so much and so well
Yeah, yeah
In so many other games
That I don't know whether that would be the first one I would even go to
Like I'd probably go
Google what's the best Metroidvania game
and just get that one, I guess.
Anyways, this is a tweet from River who says,
what's the verdict on these?
I've never tried Australian candy before.
Hashtag weekly planet pod.
And it's a picture.
Of a violet crumble.
Of a violet crumble.
Love them.
Now there's two kind of popular.
Honeycomb, chocolate covered honeycomb chocolate treats.
And we don't call them candy.
We call them chockies.
Chockies.
We call them chockaroos.
That's right.
Even if they're not made of chocky.
That's right.
We call them chocolate and non-chocolate chockaroos.
That's what we call lettuce.
Everything is chocky in Australia.
Anyway, the violet.
That's its pud.
Yes.
The violet crumble is, I would say, easily the less popular one.
Okay, as opposed to the Crunchy.
I think it's better.
I love a Crunchy, don't get me wrong.
I think the Violet Crumble is also better.
Yeah, it's the way it shatters the matters.
That's the way that it's sold.
It's a much crispier snap.
And the other one is like a softer honeycomb.
Again, I think they're both good.
In fact, the crunchy is more of a crumble, if you ask me.
It crumbles more.
When you think about it, we're in the Matrix, James.
They didn't know how to make a crunchy or a violet crumble.
They switched them around.
In a way, the violet crumble is crunchier.
You're right.
You're absolutely right.
I've got to go.
Violet crunchy.
That's what I should have called it. Ah!
Yeah.
So I hope you let us know.
What was it like?
What did you think?
Yeah.
What's next, mate?
Here's the thing, though.
Yeah.
If it's made in America, it might be different.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
Because sometimes they're like, they bring it to America,
but they change the formula.
Yeah, because you wouldn't ship them over, would you?
No.
So I don't know.
Let me check where they're manufactured.
Okay.
This is an email from Victor.
Hello, Victor.
Dear James and Maiso, I've been listening to your podcast
since pretty much the beginning, but this is the first time
that I'm emailing, which feels strange.
Vast amounts have changed in my life since I started listening
to your podcast, but I feel like you have been one
of the few constants.
You've never failed to make me laugh and have directly affected
my vocabulary.
Yes.
Probably because of chockaroos and so forth.
Yes.
I hope you soon start saying chockaroos.
I'm not even that into movies anymore,
but I find you two so entertaining and refreshing to listen to
that I think I could listen to you talk about anything for hours.
Wow, thank you so much.
Yeah.
I'm sorry you fell out of love with movies.
That's right.
So do I.
At least you love podcasts from idiots.
Exactly.
I feel like I've grown up with this podcast,
and you two have helped me get through many hard times without knowing,
and for that I thank you no end.
I feel like I should have written sooner,
but it never occurred to me until I became an adult recently
and realized how important your podcast has been to me,
so I just felt like I really wanted you to know.
I'm sure you get plenty of emails like this,
but I can't thank you enough for what you do,
and no podcast will ever get anywhere near you as my favorite.
Keep up the work. Good work.
Victor from London in England. I don't think that's true.
I think you'll one day find a podcast that is
superior to this podcast. Like a podcast about
Bruce Willis trying to buy a town. Exactly.
Or my podcast of the Sex and the City
recaps that I do with my wife. Or the Bruce Willis thing
that I said. That's right, but the one I said
more so, I reckon. Aside from
Australia, it's common, the violet crumble, in Hawaii
and a selection of other places including Hong Kong and California.
Cool.
So I'd imagine that they were probably, they can also be found
in import specialty stores, et cetera, across the United States.
So if it came from an import specialty store,
they might not actually be manufactured in the US.
I think that one there, look at the picture of that.
Do you have the picture?
I can bring it up. Okay. I think that one there, look at the picture of that. Do you have the picture? I can bring it up.
Okay.
I think that one has like an American label on it.
Wow.
I think it says like, mate, Australia's own Violet Crumble.
Australia's own, mate.
Australia's own Violet Crumble, mate.
Come and get a bloody bite of this, I reckon.
Cobber.
Mason, is it time to wrap up the show?
It is time to wrap up the show, James.
Folks, thank you so much for listening.
This is our last episode of the year.
It certainly is.
But, of course, we've got another.
At the start of next year, we have the final episode of the year.
Well, you're right.
Australia's Violet Crumble.
Yeah.
Interesting.
And on the Australian ones, it says Violet Crumble from here,
where you are currently, where you live.
It also says net weight, 1.75 Oz.
Like Australia. Not a unit of measurement. Which is ironic, isn't it? No, we don't use Oz.75 Oz. Like Australia.
Which is not a unit of measurement.
Which is ironic, isn't it?
No, we don't use Oz.
We use gram.
Yep.
That's interesting.
I'm just going to find a version of the Australian one.
We use Merica.
It's a 45 Merica chocolate bar.
We use Yank.
That's right.
It's 45 Yank.
It's a 45 Yank bar, James.
Folks, thank you so much for listening.
Thank you for liking the podcast and subscribing to the podcast
and telling your friends about the podcast
and giving us a nice
review on a podcast, of the podcast.
Five star review of the podcast,
which you can do anywhere now, including
apparently Spotify.
If you're like, I use Spotify, I can't
review anybody on Spotify. Now you
can. Now you can. I wonder what our rating is
currently. Oh, please tell me.
1,000 reviews, 5.0.
Fuck yes.
Look at that.
Pretty good, right?
You can just, how do you rate this show?
I rate it good, I reckon.
I don't want to mess with the algorithm.
Yeah, that's true.
I don't rate my own shows.
That's right.
I mean, they're good.
It's a bloody good show.
Ah, mate, don't rate them.
Don't reckon they're no good, mate.
James, you got any five-star reviews there?
This is from
Hitman, like the games.
This podcast over the years has taught me much
about fashion, with James' keen sense
for wigs and haircuts, and Mason's
innate style for suits and watches.
This pod has helped me become a master
dresser and haircut slash wig wearer,
which is important in my profession
because Hitman, like the game.
Oh, very good. That's a five-star review.
That's a good one.
Combined, we make one Agent 47.
I don't know if you know that, James.
This is from either Spencer Briscoe or Aiden Alias
because that's the username, but it says Spencer at the top.
Also five stars.
It says, listen to a man go mad while his friend negs him.
I've been listening for a few years now,
and one of the hosts, James, has slowly gone mad
over the course of the show.
It's great.
Whether it be weird vendettas from years ago,
rants about local specific things, or a gorilla eating Greek cuisine,
James continues to spiral week after week.
I love how that's the way people see me.
They're just like, this man is fucking broken to his core.
And we love it.
We're here for it.
That's right.
Better him than me, they say.
The co-host, a.k.a aka the real host, as he is beat on
two more episodes, Nick Mason, seems to
subtly add to James' madness by derailing
the show like a twisted Jiminy Cricket.
The show is
great, with good personality
and chemistry. Also, one of them is a puppet
or something, and the other sometimes uses a fake
name. 10 out of 10, unless they don't read this,
then boo. Well, I did read it,
and thank you for the reviews.
That's right.
Terrific stuff.

Yes. Five cents? Five cent.
Maybe. Does that work? I don't know. You can
give us five cent. You can give us five cent.
I actually don't know if that works. If every single person
gave us five cent, oh, we'd be rolling
in dough. If we're like everyone on earth.
Yeah. Give us five cent. Five cent.
That's interesting. Six billion. Eight billion?
Seven billion. Do you want me to do the math? Yeah, you do the math. Okay, you keep going. I'm just going to get out a pen and paper. That's interesting. Six billion. Eight billion? Seven billion. Do you want me to do the math?
Yeah, you do the math.
Okay, you keep going.
I'm just going to get out a pen and paper.
That's how I do things.
I'm like one of those guys.
What do you even need a calculator for when you've got a pen and a paper?
And a pocket full of dreams.
Hey, idiot.
Nobody thinks that's a good idea.
Or you can sign up to BigSandwich.co.
Nine US dollar reduce per month.
How many O's in that billion?
Maybe I do need a pen and paper.
I can just look it up.
Hang on.
I can just look it up.
Nine?
Nine zeros.
Sure.
It depends on your definition of a billion though.
It does, doesn't it?
Eight zeros.
I don't know.
I've got it.
It's fine.
It's nine.
You're right.
Okay.
Folks.
Yep.
You sign up for tobeaksandwich.co for nine US dollar reduce per month.
We've got all sorts of bonus podcasts and movie commentaries,
diehard commentary, as mentioned, a lot of fun, big time fun.
I agree.
Holiday tradition, I think.
I think so.
Also, if you want to track it down, if you weren't listening this time last year,
also on YouTube, we've got our Jingle All The Way commentary.
Oh, that's right.
Yeah.
And there's, yeah, movie commentaries, bonus podcasts.
It'll keep on rolling even when we take a couple of weeks off.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
For holiday times.
That's right.
That's the plan, isn't it?
Yeah.
And thank you to The Brute and The Basilisk and Arachnoprolo Musical Themes.
We've got t-shirts on TeePublic.
You just search for The Weekly Planet.
Yeah.
Get one of those.
Get one of those.
I'll show, I reckon.
I think so too.
Next week, big time wrap up, awards, Snake Eyes.
Snake Eyes first, obviously.
Priority number one, Snake Eyes.
Priority number two, Snake Eyes spoiler review.
We're going to do non-spoilers and we're going to do spoilers. Spoilers, obviously. Priority number one, Snake Eyes. Priority number two, Snake Eyes spoiler review. We're going to do non-spoilers and we're going to do spoilers.
Spoilers, yeah.
Also, it's $350 million.
Yeah.
God, I would love that.
I've even split two ways.
That's actually a lot.
I'd buy that town, the Bruce Willis one, and then just burn it down.
And they'd be like, why should we sell it to you?
And you'd be like, I'm not Bruce Willis.
And they'd be like, all right.
Yeah, and you can say whatever you want about me.
I'll do all the interviews that you want.
That's right.
Apparently he rode a horse during a parade.
They did a parade and he was at the front of the parade
on a big horse waving.
That's so weird.
And they took his photo and they put it in the paper
and he's like, how dare you?
God, that's weird, isn't it?
Yeah.
I wouldn't do that.
No.
No, I would if I had $350 million.
Anyway, thanks everybody for watching.
Grab that jammy, guys.
We will see you next week.
And have a safe and happy new year.
Yeah.
What are you doing?
Let us know.
You going to be behind a dumpster doing your stuff?
In a violet crumble behind a dumpster?
Having a crumble dump?
That's what we call it.
We call it having a crumble dump.
Good stuff.
Goodbye.
Bye.
It's my favorite character from Harry Potter.
