Welcome back, everybody, to another episode of The Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday and with me as always, Nick Mason.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Hello. I just noticed you've got a Robotech t-shirt. I wore this for you, James, because I knew you'd recognize it because of your encyclopedic knowledge of anime and so forth. Yeah, that's right. Even though this is an American cartoon, James. Don't do me any favours, all right? I don't want you wearing clothes just to try and appeal to me. I don't need that. It seems desperate.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Oh, okay. So I shouldn't wear my T-shirt that says, like, Dad ATM or whatever, you know? I mean, yeah, that one's good. That one's pretty good, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Big week, Mason, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:01:47 Lots of news. Normally lots of news. Lots of one movie we're going to talk about. Oh, yeah. It's called There's a Bloody Alien. He's coming. You won't freaking believe this. He's coming to your house.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Yeah. Bet you're not ready for this. Going to go through all your stuff. Yeah. He's got sticky fingers probably. Sticky little alien fingers and everything to go through all your stuff. Yeah. It's got sticky fingers probably. It's got sticky little alien fingers and everything. Go through all your photo albums. Now, while we're doing this amazing riff, what is it called?
Starting point is 00:02:11 No One Will Save You. Thank you. It's on Hulu in the United States of America. And in Australia, it's on Disney+. That's right. But before we get there, we've got some other stuff. Everybody else working out yourselves. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Figure it out. What are we? The international streaming conversion body officials? Yeah. Is that what you think? Yeah. We're not. We got fired from that job. Yeah. We don't want to talk about it. No, we can't legally. We can't. We signed an NDA. The chairman of the
Starting point is 00:02:38 international region streaming body, he said don't. He said don't? Just don't do it. Okay. You've been fired? No. I've been fired. Interesting. Twice, I think? Cool. He said don't? Just don't do it. Okay. You haven't been fired? No. I've been fired. Interesting. Twice, I think? Cool.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Both times, not really justified. Maybe I'll talk about it at the end of the show. Okay. Also, I was like, fuck it, I hate this and I don't need it anyway. So I wasn't like, oh, please take me back. I was like, fuck you. I wasn't like that, I just left. So what were you like?
Starting point is 00:03:01 I'm getting a lot of mixed messages and a lot of stories that don't really add up here, actually. I'm just trying to be truthful. And yet everything you said was lies. Very interesting. Were those emotional truths, James? Yeah, maybe. Sure. So anyways, time codes below if you want to jump to anything in particular.
Starting point is 00:03:18 We're going to talk about the budget for Marvel's next movie, The Marvels. Is it high? Is it inexplicably high? Is it too high? Yeah, it is. But they thought it was inexplicably lower initially. Then we're going to talk about what's going on with why Daredevil is being rebooted, and we've talked about this specifically.
Starting point is 00:03:35 For a good reason. We're going to talk about what's going on with Aquaman 2 and the test screenings. Okay. I smell walkouts. That's right. What's this one? I've written a bunch of stuff here. I smell walkouts. That's right. What else are we going to, what's this one? I've written a bunch of stuff here.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I don't know. Oh, Tim Burton's thoughts on The Flash. Really? Because there's some, we can spoil this point, there's some cameos and some characters that appear from, that he, you know, had a big hand in. I'm just going to write it. For example, the character of Michael Cade. Yeah, that's a big one. It's probably the biggest one.
Starting point is 00:04:04 He's a character. Yeah, he certainly is. Yeah. It's probably the biggest one. Yeah, he's a character. Yeah, he certainly is. Yeah. Then we've got first reactions to a couple of big movies, which I cannot wait to talk about. Oh, my goodness. Is this from the – so was the Toronto International Film Festival? Was that a race?
Starting point is 00:04:16 The TIFF. Yeah. That was quite a race. Yeah, but I've picked two, but there is more than two. One we're going to talk about actually next week. We've got a trailer for Percy Jackson and – The Olympians. He's Harry Potter or whatever.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Yeah, yeah, yeah. He thought he was just a regular kid, but he's a special kid. Yeah, that's right. And Chris Evans talks about what it means to be, like, characters in Captain America and all of that. Oh, yeah. He's doing the rounds this week because he's got a thing out. So, you know, in every interview they're like,
Starting point is 00:04:38 what was it like being Captain America? And it's like, it was a big part of my life. If I didn't want to do it initially, then I did, and now I'm not. That's right. You know, he does that. So he's got something out, but presumably these were recorded prior to the strike. I guess they were, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Or Scabton America, am I right? Captain Scab-merica. Mine was better. Mason. Wait, wait, wait. Captain Ameriscab. I think I've saved it. Scabton of, that doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Scabton America. Scabton Amergab is the best one, I think. They work together. He doesn't seem the type. Isn't his mum a teacher or something? And his dad's a dentist. Or a nurse or something? Yeah, cool. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Anyways, speaking of, apparently there were major steps taken this week in negotiations to end the strike. It's been 150-plus days at this point. Apparently this is just the rumors that both sides are seeming to be coming to agreement. So it could, by this time next week, or by the time this goes out even, it could very well be on the way, but my hope is that it lasts forever. Oh, you think so? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I mean, obviously you want everyone to get paid properly, but you don't want it to end early and then that not be the case for people. That's true, yeah. And also, apparently we have to factor in a lot of the time that whenever like, you know, some publications like they're nearly at the end of the strike or whatever, sometimes that that's been, the studios have fed information to their scab newspapers. That's right.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Deadline more like scab line. Whoa, very good, yeah. So anyway, we'll see how that all rounds out soon. But The Marvels. Oh, yes. That's coming out in November maybe. Yeah, so Nia DaCosta who's directing that, she did an interview recently where she was like,
Starting point is 00:06:13 I don't know what's happening. With the movie? No, she was like. I haven't seen it. I don't know what's happening. She was very honest and she was, you know, it was very much like. The thing we all know but, you know, they don't't really mention until they normally don't mention it until after many years afterwards where she was like yeah a lot of this this is kevin feige's movie and i'm really just here to
Starting point is 00:06:33 fill in some gaps kind of thing to answer easter egg videos yeah absolutely for the rest of my life yeah kevin doesn't have the time to do one of those for every movie so he parcels those out to people he designates sacrifices that have to talk about Easter eggs for the rest of their lives. That's right. Anyway, it's cheap. It only costs $130 million. Whoa, that's a bargain.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Nah, you're wrong, idiot. Forbes said actually it's expensive. I can't believe I thought that for a microsecond. I'm so stupid. It actually costs somewhere around $274 million. That's a lot more. That's crazy. That's twice as much, actually.
Starting point is 00:07:08 That's almost exactly twice as much. Yeah, man. Yeah. Good news. Like if you went to buy anything, like bigger than like a loaf of bread, and you went to the counter and they're like, this is twice as much as you thought, you'd be like, I don't like that. It reminds me of the Marvels.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Yeah, yeah, yeah. You would say that. I mean, this is Marvel's branded Wonder Bread, so that explains that. But good news because they actually got $55 million from the UK government. Oh, just giving that out, aren't we? Giving it out, mate. Lucky for some.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Bloody must be nice. Is that just because the Prime Minister's a big fan? I guess. Yeah, great. Just cutting checks, mate. Yeah, right. So that means it'll have to gross at least $439.6 million of the box office to break even.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Okay. As studios get around half of the theatre takings. But that, of course, will depend on if they can do the marketing campaign. That's true, yeah. If the strike is over or whatever. And, of course, as we know, the original Captain Marvel, huge failure because it only made $1 billion as opposed to the potentially predicted 750 million to 1.25 billion dollars again it threaded
Starting point is 00:08:10 the needle there and is therefore a massive failure as we know exactly only a billion dollars but will that translate to this is the love of captain marvel still here i don't think i mean that came out between endgame movies so you know uh i think you know it could do well if it's good yeah but if it's good. Yeah. But if it's like whatever, then no, it will sink. Like they need to be better now. People aren't going out for movies that are okay at the moment.
Starting point is 00:08:33 So, you know, we'll just see what happens. That's true, yeah. Yeah. And I also think, you know, Barbie and Oppenheimer, they, you know, they're both, you know, very enjoyable movies and, you know, they had the ground up, you know up promo. Do you like how there's two flies in here? There are two flies around in here but I feel bad swatting a fly because I'm always like, I can't make a fly.
Starting point is 00:08:52 You can't make a fly. I couldn't make a fly so why am I destroying a fly? Because it's annoying. I guess. You can eat them. That's true. That would be the circle of life and I think that's cool. I'm waiting until they both leave and then I'm going to close the door but they won't. Maybe if we turn off the light, do some night podcasting,
Starting point is 00:09:08 and then they'll leave. Is that if flies do that? Oh, this is sinister. I don't like how dark this is. Wow, it's like we're in NORAD. We're waiting for a call from the president. We've got a KH. What are we talking about?
Starting point is 00:09:23 I've lost it. Oh, yeah, the thing about the Barbie and Oppenheimer is they got the ground up marketing campaign, but also they were allowed to promote. The stars were allowed to promote it pretty much right up until the release. It was a very short window. It was like right there. It was right there like they were doing. They walked out of one of the premieres.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Yeah, that's right. Yeah, yeah. And they were like strikes on and Cillian Murphy's like, thank God. Yeah. I've got to go. That's it. And they were great.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I've got to make doubly sure my kids are not in America currently. I do love how, you know, they're doing other things like, you know, they're like, oh, it's Saw and Paw Patrol. Like it's Saw Patrol. And it's like what you're saying is two movies are coming out, which happens literally every week. Right. You can't.
Starting point is 00:10:07 No. What are you doing? Exactly. Yeah. So that's fun, isn't it? Yeah. Anyways, now you're familiar with Stephen DeKnight? He worked on Daredevil, Spartacus.
Starting point is 00:10:17 He's an EP of some sort. That's right. He's written and directed and maybe directed? I don't know if he's directed. He's at least created a bunch of stuff. Yeah, now there was some controversy or controversy, depending on where you're from, this week because he said something. So he was one of the producers on the Netflix Daredevil series,
Starting point is 00:10:33 Daredevil, the Daredevil series. And then they're going to change the name from Daredevil to Daredevil and he's unhappy about that. No, but what? No. So he's been, he was quoted and then he was misquoted, if I recall. So he's said something along the lines of he's very excited for the new Netflix series, the new Daredevil series,
Starting point is 00:10:55 Daredevil Born Again. But he did point out that perhaps one of the reasons it's being renamed is because that is a way to avoid paying people their full amount. Exactly. Their full kind of pay grade. Because when you get to a certain, depending on what contract you sign, you get to a certain number of seasons and then that amount increases, which is why you see shows get cancelled after two or three seasons
Starting point is 00:11:18 or rebranded, Dexter New Blood, Borscht 2.0. Borscht 2.0, Borscht in America. That's right. He's a cop or something. He's a cop or something. He's a cop or something. What is he doing? I don't know. He's solving someone's murder that he knew.
Starting point is 00:11:30 But, yeah, so this is what was actually written. Someone on Thomas on Twitter said, someone called Thomas on Twitter said, not only did they cancel Dead Ever Once, the crew got a full raise in holiday slash vacation pay, the Disney Plus reboot is back to one season IATSE contract terms. It's a fucking scam. I wonder if Stephen DeKnight knows that. And he replied, he does.
Starting point is 00:11:49 It's an old Disney scam. I'm getting a phone call from Sri Lanka. Do you think that's- Yeah, yeah, check. Do you think that's NORAD calling? Yes. We should turn the- I missed it, but we could turn the keys anyway.
Starting point is 00:11:59 We better. He does. It's an old Disney scam. Do you think the flies have gone? Or do you think we should- I don't know. Should we test? Let's test it.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Oh, there's more. We should close it. Close the door. Is that one? No, they're still in here. Dang it. Yeah. We can't see them if the lights are off.
Starting point is 00:12:13 So the lights are going back off again, folks. God, this is incredible. Isn't it just? Great podcast. What an experience. Look, folks, it's total darkness. Yep. Except for the-
Starting point is 00:12:22 Oh, they're attracted to my computer light. Wow. Maybe I'll chuck it in the bin. Maybe I'll crank up the light in the other room. Oh, nice. Good call. We know what we're doing. We know what we're doing.
Starting point is 00:12:31 No, we don't have a can of fly spray. People are probably asking. I looked for it earlier. I don't think flies are even attracted to light, to be honest. James, I think, have you considered flies are attracted to big piles of poop? So maybe you could put your bloody personality outside and they'd bloody follow it out, wouldn't they? Ha, ha, ha, ha!
Starting point is 00:12:52 They probably would. Yes! You got me. Not only did you get me, it's true. That's right. Well, the best and most sophisticated insults are based on truth. And poop.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Yeah, that's true. Yeah. So, yeah, so he says there's an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to the first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds slash unions and crushed. In another tweet, as you mentioned, he said, to be clear, I cannot wait to see Charlie Cox
Starting point is 00:13:19 and the amazing Vincent D'Onofrio reprise their iconic roles, but to claim this is a complete reboot and you don't have to pay the original creatives is some corporate shenanigans, to say the least. Apparently, like, underneath that tweet, I saw a lot of people going, like, talking about, like, Disney kids shows, all of which did this exact same thing. Like, a lot of people going, oh, my God,
Starting point is 00:13:39 I loved the sweet life of Zack and Cody, but then it became Zack and Cody on a ship or something. And they're like, oh, no, that's – I thought it was just a change of pace, but no, it was to, you know, destroy the livelihoods of the people that worked on it, which is cool. They thought they were going to have fun nautical adventures, and maybe they did, but at what cost? That's right.
Starting point is 00:13:57 You know? So, yeah, that's fun and something that probably won't get addressed. James Wan was speaking to Screen Rant. He's the director of many things, including some of the Saw franchise. One of the Fast and Furious movies was a good one. He did a good one. And when you say he was speaking to Screen Rant, do you think he was speaking to someone at Screen Rant
Starting point is 00:14:14 or do you think he was talking to like an AI prompt? Wow, that's a great question. Does it matter at this point? It does not, no. Okay, cool. Okay, yeah, I don't know the answer. But, yeah, in regards to Aquaman 2 and the way, you know, because when he was putting it together, the reboot was happening.
Starting point is 00:14:27 So there's rumors. Well, not rumors. Like it was going to, first Michael Keaton was going to be in it and then Jason Momoa revealed that Ben Affleck was going to be in it. Do you remember that? I remember that. And that's not happening anymore because it's all been rebooted and George Clooney's Batman now, remember?
Starting point is 00:14:41 I do remember that. Of course I remember that. I mean, in a way, he's always been Batman. It's true. In my it's true my mind yeah i agree so he said i'm aware of everything that's happening around me i mean i use the analogy that i'm living in a house that's getting renovated okay so that's ongoing apparently now you might say it's the sweeter life of james wan yes now grace randolph went on twitter and said uh she's heard stories of people walking out of the Aquaman 2 free test screening. And this was confirmed by a few others. That's bad news, obviously.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Well, that's true. I mean, the version I heard, well, I mean, the memes that I saw suggest that the reason people were walking out is because someone's baby dies in the movie. But that cannot be true. Oh, Aquaman's baby dog. Yeah, there's no way they're going to kill a baby in the sequel to a billion dollar movie upon which a new universe hinges. They're not going to be like, well, we'll shoot that baby with a harpoon.
Starting point is 00:15:34 I think people will like that. They'll like our fresh new direction for that. You know, most people think of babies as being alive, but we'll we're going to burst that bubble. We're going to twist that trope like we twist the baby's head around. Who do you think did it? Would it have killed the Black Manta?
Starting point is 00:15:49 Aquaman. Oh, Aquaman killed his own baby. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. It's unlike him. Or like this version? Don't know yet. I can't tell.
Starting point is 00:15:55 He's a drunk. Yeah. I reckon somebody, you know what, I reckon some people walked out to go to the bathroom or something. Yeah. Well, that's the thing. You don't know with this stuff. But the word is, and this has been happening for quite a while.
Starting point is 00:16:07 The movie's so wet. It is very wet. And there'd be probably continuous. There's the drip, drip sound. Drip, drip noise the whole time, you know? And everyone's always pissing in the ocean in those movies. That's right. But you can't, like, there's been rumours for a long time
Starting point is 00:16:20 that this is, like, in trouble. Right, yeah. But, you know, to what extent remains to be seen. And, you know, maybe it could be fixed or be okay. Yeah. They could okay it by the time it comes out. I think they could fix it with computers. Oh, yeah?
Starting point is 00:16:32 Mm-hmm. What type of computer? Like a Tandy Radio Shack. Oh, yeah. You know, one of those old ones with like the orange and black screen. Yeah, okay, cool. And it's all, the whole thing's beige, but it's like dirty. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Anyway, just dump a bunch of those in the ocean. That's what I'm saying. Oh, cool. The whole thing's beige, but it's like dirty. Okay. Anyway, just dump a bunch of those in the ocean. That's what I'm saying. Oh, man. But let's talk about The Flash. Okay. As we always do. Tim Burton spoke to the British Film Institute, which does seem like something he would do.
Starting point is 00:16:55 It would, wouldn't he? Yeah. Can't get him off the bloody phone with the BFI. No. They're like, Jesus, it's Tim again. He's like, excuse me, I can't hear you. I have to brush my hair out of my ears. You know what he's like.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They asked him about a couple of things that happened in the Flash movie, but namely the appearance of Nicolas Cage as Superman, which is pretty much the version that he nearly filmed. Apparently, I didn't remember this, but apparently they were two weeks away from starting to film that movie in 97. The whole thing's up. There's a great documentary, The Death of Superman Lives What Happened,
Starting point is 00:17:30 which the late great John Stranett put together, which you can find if you want to, which is really good if you want to do. If you do want to and want to do, check it out. That's right. But he said when you work that long on a project and it doesn't happen, it affects you for the rest of your life because you get passionate about things and each thing is an unknown journey. And Superman Lives wasn't there yet.
Starting point is 00:17:50 But it's one of those experiences that never leaves you a little bit. And then he went on to say, but also it goes into another AI thing. And this is why I think I'm over it with the studio, he continued. They can take what you did, Batman or whatever, and culturally misappropriate it or whatever you want to call it. Even though we're a slave of Disney or Warner Brothers, they can still do what they want. So in my latter years of life, I'm in quiet revolt against all this. Wow.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Brave. But as he considered, we can fix everything with computers. Exactly. Just dump them in the ocean. Let me check Tim Burton's network. I don't know if cultural appropriation is the correct term there. That doesn't make any sense. Says he's got a net worth of $100 million.
Starting point is 00:18:33 It's good that he's talking out against it, obviously. But yeah, he's been making Disney movies for like, he used to make Dumbo. It came out like two years ago or whatever. I can understand that, though. I mean, that would have been a very difficult project to walk away from. That's true. Cool 90s Nicolas Cage mulleted Superman.
Starting point is 00:18:49 That's right. Oh, my goodness, Mason. So we've got some first reactions, as mentioned. Some first reacts. Do you want the good news or the bad news? From what? What are we talking about? Two different movies.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Oh. What do you want to start with? Good news. Okay, good news. Here we go. The good news is that Expendables 4 is bad. Oh, good. We don't have to say it then or we will i don't know but is it entertainingly bad no but that's not good news yeah i know if it would be great news if it were entertainingly bad and
Starting point is 00:19:17 we could watch it and and rip it apart for an episode well it pauses with courses we would all something something and whatever you fucking idiot m Mason. That is true. That was too aggressive and I apologise. I shouldn't have put it on my second T-shirt that I'm wearing. Look, as I started that expression, I realised I had no idea where it went or if it applied. It's if horses were courses, we'd all have a lot to drink. Would we? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Oh, this is from the director of Need for Speed. Wow. Yeah, a movie you liked. Did the movie Hidden Strike? Isn't that Jackie Chan, John Cena movie? Oh, vag is from the director of Need for Speed. Wow. Yeah, a movie you liked. Did the movie Hidden Strike, you know that Jackie Chan, John Cena movie? Oh, vaguely, yeah. No, it just came out. Yeah, but I remember the trailer and being like,
Starting point is 00:19:54 oh, a lot of that they've done with computers. Yeah, yeah. But not in a good way. So this is out next week actually for us at least. I don't know if we're going to talk about this one. We'll see. But here's some reactions. Hunter B Video says, well, I was very disappointed
Starting point is 00:20:04 in Expend for Balls. It makes an absolutely boneheaded decision right at the beginning of the movie and keeps going with a weak script. Tony Jo and Jason Statham do the heavy lifting to make this one barely watchable. Needs more firepower. Barton Review says, Give me a hell no for Expend for Balls. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:20:21 It's absolute trash. Is that a thing they say in the movies? Is that why? Might be what they all say. hands down the worst one yet full of action sequences in a team absolutely no one wants to watch these expendables are way past their expiry date i mean that's the point isn't it that is kind of the yeah it really is that's the maybe they could somehow work with that in the in the writing of the movie yeah to make that a plot point or make it funny or interesting yeah or they could just have them, just sort of wave M16s
Starting point is 00:20:47 at, like, disposable bad guys and just mow them all down. Yeah, they pop out the top of a tank and then nobody's in the same scene together. Yeah, nice. I love that. Phil the Cool says, Sadly, Expend Four Balls is a serviceable but instantly forgettable sequel that dilutes the formula that brought us to the dance. Mediocre CGI, inert performances.
Starting point is 00:21:06 But they tried to fix everything with computers. That's what they said. And a wafer-thin plot only derailed the enjoyable moments of action sprinkled throughout. Such a missed opportunity. But I will say this, Mason, the not all bad is a nice one from Jif Swartz who says- They pay me to say good stuff.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Expand four balls. More like, no, Jif says it was awesome. Fun movie. Jason Statham must have killed at least 1,000 people. Hell yeah. Spend four balls. More like, no, Jesus says it was awesome. Fun movie. Jason Statham must have killed at least 1,000 people. Hell yeah. The cast is stacked. Biggin' Fox and Tony Jaa were really good. There might possibly be one more movie left in the franchise to end it.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Bring this cast back. Five spender balls. Bring them back to the bloody graveyard, am I right? Bring them back to the retirement home. Bring them back to b retirement home. Bring them back to bingo night. Yeah. Bring them back to the hairdresser and they get that blue rinse in the hair.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Oh, yeah. Bring them back to the RSL. Okay, that's it. They'd have membership, wouldn't they? I think so, yeah. I have membership to the RSL. Do you? Yeah, they took me into it. What did you fight in? You could just pay and be a member you accuse me like you know me you know i didn't fight any war the war you bloody fought in was
Starting point is 00:22:12 bloody capitalism on the side of the capitalist thank you i appreciate that but also you know i don't feel like there's been a just war in quite a long time so i like to okay jump on the next one the next one that that comes up, you'll jump right in. I mean, if it's a good one, I'll jump in. Okay, good. Terrific. I love that. Also, I might be too old at this point.
Starting point is 00:22:28 I don't know if they'd take me. Yeah. Anyways, Mason, here's the bad news. The creator. Maybe you could join the bloody grey army, James. You know those blokes? Yeah, yeah. Carpentry and stuff, but they're all old.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Yeah, I know them. They've asked about me. Yeah. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. The Creator. The bad news is that this movie is good and we haven't seen it yet, but we will for next week.
Starting point is 00:22:56 And the extra good news is it's coming out a day before it's coming out on the rest of the world. Oh, I'm going to spoil it. Classic. That's the classic Australian release for the present day. That's right. Joseph Deckelmeyer says, The Creator is a masterpiece and one of the year's best movies.
Starting point is 00:23:13 It hits on so many levels with AI being such a hot topic. Gareth Edwards does a masterful job of keeping the audience engaged every step of the way. Madeline Yuma-Volez has to be in the conversation for the Oscars. She just has to be. She won't the Oscars. She just has to be. She won't stop yapping about it. Any conversation about the Oscars, she has to be in it. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:23:31 God. Gareth Edwards, if you don't know, he directed the Godzilla reboot, which is the franchise that's still going. He directed Rogue One sort of, except they took him off it. And replaced him with Tony Gilroy. Yeah, who's now doing Andor, which is an incredible show and whatever. And he also did some independent stuff prior to that. Because he hasn't done anything since Rogue One.
Starting point is 00:23:51 So it's great that he's made something. Gareth Edwards, not to be confused with Gareth Evans, who directed The Raid. Correct. Different. They're different guys. Brandon Davis BD says, The creator is astonishingly good.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Best film of the year and the best sci-fi film in ages, in my opinion. Gareth Edwards flips expectations really impressively for a visceral, touching, and creative story of humanity. Genuinely loved it. You have to see this one. Vicky Brain says, the creator is a massive feat for the sci-fi genre. It's incredible, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Perry Nemeroff said, it's phenomenal. Hunter B Video says, Gareth Edwards doesn't miss with the creator, so on and so on and so forth. It's all good news. That is good. And it only cost like $130 million. Yeah, he did it on the cheap. He did it for half of the Marvels. He used to do his own special effects
Starting point is 00:24:35 and stuff. So yeah, he's good at shooting things on the fly and having an idea. He doesn't need to go bloody shit on the fly. Whoa, not wrong. Reckless Kelly style. Have you ever seen that movie? Of course I've seen Reckless Kelly. I if you've ever seen that movie. Of course I've seen Reckless Kelly. I caught myself watching that the other week. How dare you accuse me of never seeing Reckless Kelly. It's all we had back then.
Starting point is 00:24:51 It's true. Hugo Weaving's in it. We talked about him recently, didn't we? Hugo Weaving. Somebody wrote in about Yahoo! Series. Yahoo! Series, yeah. We talked about it. Oh, speaking of Hugo Weaving,
Starting point is 00:25:01 did you see the trailer for The Royal Hotel? Which one's that? It's from Neon. It's being released through Neon. It's got Hugo Weaving, but it see the trailer for The Royal Hotel? Which one's that? It's from Neon. It's being released through Neon. It's got Hugo Weaving, but it's also got Jessica Hennig. But it's like a modern wake and fright. Okay. So Jessica Hennig.
Starting point is 00:25:13 What's it called? I think it's called The Royal Hotel. But it's Jessica Hennig and another woman who I didn't recognize, and they're taking a working vacation. Oh, I did see the trailer for this. Yeah, she's in Jason Bateman's doing drugs. Oh. What's that show called? Oh, uh...
Starting point is 00:25:33 Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Yeah. I think her name's Julia Garner. Oh, there you go. But yeah, it's very wake and fright vibes. Like they go to an Australian town to like, it's like a working visa situation and I think it's going to be cool but then everything gets really. It's bad.
Starting point is 00:25:46 It gets really weird in the way that it can only get weird in Australia but not in a funny way. No, not in a funny way. Yeah. No. I mean it's all bad news for Australians this week. A few Jackman news, you know, obviously. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:57 I don't want to get into it. I don't want to speculate on someone's personal life but I'm Devo, mate. Devo? Hang on one sec. It's my wife. Let me just answer this phone. Hello, James speaking. I tell her, Mason, I say, don't call me when podcasting.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Whoa. Because it embarrasses me. And we're podcasting all the time. That's right. Take the hint. So anyway, what are we doing? Next thing. Trailers Ahoy.
Starting point is 00:26:20 Here we go. Percy Jackson and the- Olympians. He's a Greek god or whatever. Is that what he is? I don't know. There were two movies. I never saw them.
Starting point is 00:26:30 Now there's this show on Disney+. Yeah. Looks like people seem to like it. I can't tell. I think I've seen some- Look, this is not a great start to this segment. I disagree. I think I've seen some of the first one.
Starting point is 00:26:42 And? I loved it. Yeah. I loved it. Just to clarify. Yes. i loved it yeah i loved it just to clarify yes you loved it i loved it you're like logan lerman in the role of percy jackson i cannot believe this one will be better than the one that i think maybe i've seen some of and to be clear i loved it doesn't percy jackson defeat medusa with like the back of an ipod or something oh my god i love that puts it around the corner and she looks at it
Starting point is 00:27:05 and she turns to stone or something. I don't know. All I know is that we're definitely going to be covering this. Yeah, look, if I'm wrong, that's a free idea for you, the season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. A shiny iPod from 2007. Yes, that's right. I found it in a bin, he could say, you know.
Starting point is 00:27:22 He could say that, yeah. So, yeah, people seem to be excited for it, but also it's like one of those Disney Plus things where are they doing, are they committing to anything that's not Marvel or Star Wars? That's true, yeah. Or The Simpsons. But also one of the last performances from Lance Reddick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:36 He seems to have stepped right off the set of John Wick. He's just got a suit on there. Well, he didn't have much of a role in that movie. That's true, yeah. He probably could have, yeah. He probably filmed Percy Jackson and the Olympians and then he went on his lunch break and recorded the scene in John Wick 4. That's probably what happened.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Probably exactly what happened. But he's Zeus. He's taking the role of Zeus. Who was the role of Zeus last time? Don't know. Was it fucking Pierce Brosnan or something? No, it feels like it could be. No, he was Chiron.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Yeah. He was Chiron Mason You don't even know Okay Sean Bean was Zeus Sean Bean was Zeus Sean Bean's famous You ain't wrong, brother
Starting point is 00:28:12 Anyway, should we move it along? Last bit of news? Sure, last bit of news, yeah I've just put in here all caps Chris Evans is Captain America I don't know why I wrote that You ain't wrong, brother Is that the news?
Starting point is 00:28:23 Yeah So he had an interview with GQ, and he was asked if he'd ever returned to Marvel, and he said, yeah, maybe. Ooh, nice. I'll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. No time soon, and ultimately I hope to just maybe act
Starting point is 00:28:38 a little bit less in my life. I have a lot of other interests. Oh, let's hear about them, Chris. That sounds amazing. Just tell me what it was like to lift Thor's hammer and shut up. Yeah, that's right. Shut up forever. I'm speaking for the general audience.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Okay. I'm interested in his hobbies and sweaters and such. Me too. Yeah. He says, look, by no means have I climbed any sort of mountain in this field. I have no Oscars and I'm not lumped in with other names at the top of the mountain in any way, but I also feel very satisfied. I think he's a terrific actor.
Starting point is 00:29:04 I think so too. Just because he doesn't have no Oscars doesn't mean nothing necessarily. That's true. Tom Cruise doesn't have no Oscars, does he? That's right, yeah. And he's insane. That's true, yeah. I think the lack of Oscars drove him insane,
Starting point is 00:29:15 if I'll be perfectly honest. I don't know if it was just that. And the Scientology also. Definitely that was a factor as well, yeah, definitely. After this, I'm going to tell you an actor, when we finish recording, who I just learned is a Scientologist and it's going to ruin your night. I'm going to tell you an actor when we finish recording who I just learned is a Scientologist and it's going to ruin your night. You're going to take this out, Collings.
Starting point is 00:29:30 I did know that. Oh, no. I'll ruin my day. I knew for months. Oh, no. Is this in? Do we keep this in? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:29:36 I don't know. And then he talks about like what it means like to be an actor or what it means to be like a brand or a character oh yeah because tarantino is mentioned like there aren't any movie stars it's just the character it's thor it's whatever yeah yeah you have all these actors it's captain america scab you know it's the shadow yeah yeah no it's captain america scab what whatever we're calling it oh he's picking his scabs he's them. He's picking them off with his shield. He's scraping them off.
Starting point is 00:30:06 His shield's a giant scab. He's using his shield as a plate covered in scabs, and he's eating the scabs off the plate, and he's going as if they're gourmet hors d'oeuvres, but they're scabs. That's movie this hour, isn't it? That's scab to the mirror scab. It is.
Starting point is 00:30:21 So he said, you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters, but they're not movie stars, right? Captain America's the star, or Thor is the star. That's Tarantino saying that. Yeah. No, no, he's saying this. Oh, okay. Chris Evans is agreeing.
Starting point is 00:30:33 I'm not the first person to say that. I think it's been said a zillion times, but it's like, you know, it's these franchise characters that become a star. I would say he's a movie star, though. I think he's selling himself short. There would be very few people in the world who'd go, who's that i mean i think a lot of people might go chris uh pine chris uh yeah you know exactly yeah yeah um did you see speaking of we spoke about tiff recently yeah did you see uh chris pine's uh directorial debut oh it's pretty yeah i'm very excited to see it
Starting point is 00:31:02 because i mean i think it's called again it's called again? It's called Pool Man, all one word. And I think it was like it's Chinatown plus Ted Lasso or something like that. What? I don't know. But it seems to be the plot of Chinatown. Oh, okay. But it's this pool man. He's kind of a beach bum kind of guy.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Is it like the dude kind of situation? It seems that way, yeah, like a little bit Big Lebowski style. And he uncovers like a conspiracy about they're siphoning water off and then it's fair. Apparently it started out as a joke between him and Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman 84 on the set. And he's made a full movie about it. But I wonder if it is. It's like Kevin Smith's Tusk.
Starting point is 00:31:40 Yeah, it might be bad. It could be awful. But I'm also wondering if it's the one of the festival that everybody's like, oh, we have permission to kick this now. Yeah, it might be bad. It could be awful. But I'm also wondering if it's one of the festivals that everybody's like, oh, we have permission to kick this now. Yeah, okay. Like, you know. And I've seen other people go, oh, no, this is fun in a kind of surreal kind of way. Okay.
Starting point is 00:31:55 So I'm excited to look at that. Well, let's read some reviews. Okay. I brought them up. Oh, you've got them up. Owen Gleiberman says, not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season, but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Oh, no. Wow. Wow. What about this one from Sidhant Adlakaha, who says, it's only 100 minutes long, but upwards of 99 of those minutes are likely to be spent in silent boredom, if not irritated disbelief at being subjected to such guileless, artless nonsense. Wow.
Starting point is 00:32:25 But Sarah Knight Adamson says. This was awesome. No, she says, Pine immediately reminded me of Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. I fucking nailed that, Mason. You did. His character as Pool Man or Pool Dude, just whatever, whatever his name is, definitely has shades of the dude.
Starting point is 00:32:42 Co-stars Annette Bening and Danny DeVito at the comedic moments as DeVito never stops with the one-liners. It would be weird if the name of the movie was Pool Man but the character was called Pool Dude. That would be strange, wouldn't it? Here's one more bit of news, James. I love news. This is from The Telegraph.
Starting point is 00:33:00 Interview with the great man Michael Caine. Oh, where he's like, let me alone. He's sort of retired, he says. I'm 90. I'm bloody 90 now and I can't walk properly and all that. Or maybe he sounded a bit happier. Okay. I'm bloody 90 now and I can't walk properly and all that.
Starting point is 00:33:15 He's having a bit of fun with it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've had the best possible life I could have thought of. Isn't that nice? He probably did. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I like? We didn't talk about it last week, but Martin Short, not dead,
Starting point is 00:33:27 but he got the- He got cancelled? No, he didn't get cancelled. He got all the praise and adulation that you get if you do die. Oh, wow. Because somebody wrote an article that was like- Oh, a mean article. I saw that.
Starting point is 00:33:38 It was like, I don't like Martin Short. I don't know why anybody likes Martin Short. And then it was just thousands of posts and tweets of people going, well, here's why we like Martin Short. I like Martin Short. I like Martin Short too. Unless I shouldn't, in which case I don't know why anybody likes Martin Short. And then it was just thousands of posts and tweets of people going, well, here's why we like Martin Short. I like Martin Short. I like Martin Short too. Unless I shouldn't, in which case I don't. That's right.
Starting point is 00:33:50 No, he's good. Yeah. He's good, that guy. I agree. Only murders. Good show. I was just reading as well. There was Guillermo del Toro was talking this week about his Star Wars movie
Starting point is 00:33:59 that he went and pitched. Oh, that's right. And apparently he was going to do a Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through and gain control of the crime syndicates or whatever. Well, I prefer the version where Boba Fett becomes a gangster who doesn't want to do any crime. I prefer that.
Starting point is 00:34:12 I just prefer it, all right? I just prefer it. Do you think that's unusual that you prefer that? Like would you say you're in the minority there or do you think you speak for the wider audience? I think so, yeah. I'm the general audience. That's what I want.
Starting point is 00:34:26 It's just a shame they never made that. They never the wider audience. I think so, yeah. I'm the general audience. That's what I want. It's just a shame they never made that. They never made that show, you know. Also speaking of Star Wars, Tony Scott. Actually, this isn't about Star Wars at all. Tony Scott was going to direct Man of Steel. Did you say that? No, I didn't know that. This was...
Starting point is 00:34:39 David Goyer's been doing the rounds, right? That's why all this is coming. Yeah, I think it is. Because he mentioned he wanted Jake Gyllenhaal for Batman in the Dark Knight trilogy. Warner Brothers wanted DiCaprio for the Joker in Dark Knight Rises. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they were like, we don't want to make that.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Yeah. David S. Goyer revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Tony Scott was Christopher Nolan's priority direct Man of Steel. Ooh. There you go. And also, I think they, I don't have this here, but I remember it, apparently the initial plan was going to be to do a Man of Steel sequel, but then DC and Warner Brothers was like, no, no, we have to do a.
Starting point is 00:35:13 Yeah, we have to make something. We have to do an expanded universe. Insane. Yeah. You're going to let the dog out? I'm going to let the dog out because the dog wants to get out. Whoa. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Ollie, you betrayer. It's not dog time anymore. Don't you dare again. Oh, that means it's dog time. Ollie, you betrayer. It's not dog time anymore. Don't you stop it here. Ha, ha, ha. That means it's dog time. Ollie. Ollie, what you doing? Where?
Starting point is 00:35:30 It's dog time. What are you doing? Ha, ha, ha. Oh, it's so cold. You're so cold, Ollie. Look at you go. Ha, ha, ha. Oh, he's sneezing.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Yeah. Seasonal allergies? Potentially. Wow. Well, thanks for giving me seasonal allergies, dog. You absolute dog. You absolute dog of a dog. FX's The Veil explores the surprising and fraught relationship

Starting point is 00:37:21 Bring it up on the screen. I'll be one of those guys. We'll do it live. Remember when Bill O'Reilly went mad and he's like, we'll do it live. Yeah, which time? But yeah, that time specifically I remember. Remember when he got fired for all the sexual harassment he did? I do remember that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:32 And then he was like, people are just out to get me because I'm telling truths. Don't you love there's a lot of that going around? Yes, as a general audience, I do. I like that. Anyways, No One Will Save You. It's a Hulu exclusive slash Disney plus star situation. Budget of $22.8 million.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Obviously, and I hate to be the one to say this to you, Mason, there is no box office return for this because it is streaming. That is true. I feel like this is probably something that maybe they should have put in theatres potentially. Yeah. But, you know, who am I to say? Maybe they didn't because it is a scant 90-something minutes.
Starting point is 00:38:08 That's true, but I feel like that's a good thing, right? It is a good, yeah. They'd get plenty of sessions in, wouldn't they? Exactly. Yeah, so let me just check on something. Oh, why don't you bloody do that then, eh? Directed by Brian Duffield. Yeah, so Brian Duffield, he directed the movie Spontaneous from 2020,
Starting point is 00:38:24 which is apparently quite good, but he's written on a bunch of stuff that people might be familiar with. The Babysitter series, anyone seen those? No, because they didn't get cancelled or something? Yeah, they did too. They're pretty good. Okay. It's got Samantha Weaving.
Starting point is 00:38:38 Samara Weaving? Samara Weaving. Australia's own Samara Weaving. That's right, exactly. Very nice. The first one in particular I would say is very good. He wrote Love and Monsters, which is a movie I enjoyed. He wrote the Divergent series Insurgent,
Starting point is 00:38:49 which might have been the last one. I haven't seen those. But this is his second movie that he has directed. And I would say really solid. Yeah. Pretty goddamn good. Yeah, starring Caitlin Dever. Yeah, who's great.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Who people would know from Booksmart. She's in the movie Booksmart. She's in Justified. Yep, Dope Sick. Dope Sick, that's right, yeah. There's a TV series you did with Toni Collette. It's called Unbelievable. It's very grim.
Starting point is 00:39:14 It's about catching like a serial rapist. It's a true story. Wow. It's like horrendous. Sounds unbelievable. Oh. No, it's believable. The unbelievable thing is because the character's not believed in this thing that happens to her she's based on a real person
Starting point is 00:39:31 it is my point you know my reaction to that oh yeah well it's a bit like that isn't it but yeah it's really it's really great um people should definitely check it out i talked about on suggestible when it came out i believe um but yeah, so this is, I'll tell you this for free, James, if you were going to ask me what the story was. Oh, sorry, yeah. What do you think the story was? Oh, come on, mate. I got you again.
Starting point is 00:39:54 Oh, come on, mate. That's unbelievable. Oh, give us a chance. So I initially, watching the trailer for this, I thought it was set in the 50s. Oh, yeah, because of the aesthetics. Yeah, so You liked her little vintage outfits. I did like
Starting point is 00:40:08 her little vintage outfits. Hang on, I'll just bring something up here. Are you bringing up vintage outfits? Yeah, I'm bringing up all my vintage outfits. How many vintage outfits have you got? I don't have any vintage outfits, I don't think. Oh, I don't have any vintage outfits. I've got so many. And by that I mean I have clothes from 10 years ago that I still wear. That'll do it, yeah. You've got your jacket
Starting point is 00:40:24 that looks like two jackets. No, Mason, I You've got your jacket that looks like two jackets. No, Mason, I'm talking about my jacket that looks like two jackets. I'm fairly confident Claire threw out my one jacket that looks like two jacket jackets. You don't know that. She might have burned it. All I know is I would not have thrown out that jacket. That's true, yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:38 And she doesn't even throw out my clothes. Like she's not one to be like, I'm going through your wardrobe. She would have made an exception for that jacket. It was a good jacket. It had the warmth of one very thin jacket, but it looked like two. That's true. It didn't work. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:50 But I loved it. Anyway, Caitlin plays a young woman named Bryn in the present day. And she lives in a little town in like a little kind of sort of semi-rural town. Yep. And everyone thinks she sucks. Yeah. So she spends all her time indoors and she builds a little, like a little model of the town.
Starting point is 00:41:12 Yeah. She gets shipped little parts and she's putting together a little model town with little lights and all the stores and all the houses and stuff like that. It's fun. It looks fun. It does look fun. Yeah, she looks like she's having a good time. But, yeah, the town doesn't like her because of something that happened in the past.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Yep. But then one night she wakes up. She's like, what the frickin' hell's that? There's a frickin' bloke in the house. Except it's not a bloke. Yeah. It might be a bloke. It could be.
Starting point is 00:41:34 We don't know. It's an alien. Yeah, yeah. And it's very tense. Yeah, it is a bit tense, isn't it? Yeah. Do you reckon there was ever a point where the Cloverfield people came along and went, can we have this?
Starting point is 00:41:44 Oh, can we rebrand this? Can we have this, please? Absolutely. This is ours? I definitely. This is ours, question mark? That's right. Maybe your company is a subsidiary of our company somehow,
Starting point is 00:41:54 so we maybe just have this. Can we have this? Can we have your movie? Can we have it? Who wants the Cloverfield movies? Bad Robot? Yeah, but the last one was Netflix. But there must be like a.
Starting point is 00:42:03 Yeah. But yeah, I mean there are certainly some alien designs that I think would fit in quite well with the Cloverfield universe, especially Paramount owns them. Sort of long-armed marionette kind of situation. Yeah, we get a couple of designs, don't we?
Starting point is 00:42:18 I call these ones Gralians, because they're like the grey aliens, who you might see on the X-Files in the 90s or whatever. The traditional alien look. But this time they're doing home inv or whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The traditional alien look. But this time they're doing home invasions. Yeah, that's true. Smash and grabs. Do smash and grabs.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Yeah, so there's some aliens they want in her house, but she is having none of it. Yeah. What did you feel about this overall? I didn't feel it was particularly scary. No. But I found it very interesting. I did watch it during the day.
Starting point is 00:42:43 I also saw it during the day. To be fair, so yeah. I drew all the curtains. Yep. Drew them all. Why don't you pull them down? Instead of drawing pictures of curtains all day, mate. Don't you know anything about light displacement?
Starting point is 00:42:53 Fucking idiot. James, that's not what you meant. You know it. I was being obtuse. Oh, you're being obtuse. Well, that's great on an audio format. I was being obtuse. Oh, you're being obtuse. Well, that's great on an audio format. Someone being deliberately obtuse.
Starting point is 00:43:10 Isn't that good? Good for you and me. I've lost my train of thought. Anyway. You drew some curtains. I drew some curtains. And they're in this art book. I thought you might want to see them. They're really good, actually.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. But go on. So you made the room dark-ish. I might put them in my drawing room. Wait a minute. There's a joke here. And maybe I can
Starting point is 00:43:34 parlay it into an insult. So work it through. We'll do it later. Anyway, but yeah, I didn't we were both it during the day and I was busy drawing curtains so I didn't catch all of it. But I didn't find it scary.
Starting point is 00:43:51 It felt more to me like a sort of darker E.T. Yeah, okay. But I think it's very interesting what it is doing, especially the sort of narrative device, which I think we'll have to talk about in spoilers. Yes, a lot of it we will. And you kind of don't notice it for a while that they're doing that thing. Yeah, it's like the – well, we'll't have it. And you kind of don't notice it for a while that they're doing that thing.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Yeah, it's like the – we'll talk about it in spoilers. But, yeah, I was thinking about like if I had an alien home invasion. Go on. And my first response is like, what would I do? And I thought I would call my dad. And I'm like, no, we probably wouldn't now. I'd probably have to deal with it myself, wouldn't I? That's right, yeah. Yeah, which is annoying.
Starting point is 00:44:24 Yeah, yeah yeah yeah but maybe your dad's also had an alien home invasion at some point that's true he might have some tips you know yeah yeah yeah you wouldn't be like dad can you come over and deal with this
Starting point is 00:44:32 yeah but then of course you'd say dad do you have any tips for this and he'd be like I'll be right over and you'd be like dad no I don't want you to come over
Starting point is 00:44:38 you don't have to come over it's fine and he'd bring his kits put his cricket bat in it and so forth it'd just be a cricket kit. It'd be the pads and the Wicked Keeper pads and the cricket bat. Exactly, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:52 And the hat with the things so magpies can't get you. That's right. What did you think of all the different designs of the aliens though? Because we kind of, it's almost like different casts or ages. Yeah, and I liked that they weren't explained. Yeah. There was like one might be a child at one point. There's like a big spidery one.
Starting point is 00:45:11 There's a moment where one goes up on little tippy toes and I'd imagine the sound of, you know, when like a cartoon walks on tippy toes. Like that kind of sound. They have a kind of a, they have a manner of, I wouldn't say speaking, but noise making that sounds like they're trying to talk or they're trying to taunt or laugh.
Starting point is 00:45:32 Yeah. And it's very off-putting. I completely agree. Great sound design in this. Yeah. I also love that a lot of the time they're just stupid fucking idiots running around with no clothes on. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:45:42 Just being susceptible to being stabbed. You don't have stabbing on your planet? What are you doing? What's going on there? You don't have cricket pads you could wear to prevent being stabbed? Exactly, yeah. And on top of that, you've got that going on and then you've got this kind of an invasion of the body snatchers kind of element to it too, which we'll get to.
Starting point is 00:46:04 But it does get to a point where she has to go home alone on all these aliens, which I quite like. But it's not just that. It's not just like home invasion, fight back. There is more layers to this and things that unfold towards the end. And it's very compelling in the way that the story is drawn out and told. It's very compelling in the way that the story is drawn out and told. And you see it's very good at letting you ask,
Starting point is 00:46:32 like figure out the questions you need to ask. Like a scene will occur and go, wait, why did that? Okay, but why? And then they answer it though. They answer it by the end. You're not just like, I don't know. Then it's like, I don't know. That's right.
Starting point is 00:46:43 Unless the movie would go, I don't know. Unless the movie would just end, the screen would go to black and the director would come out and be like, I don't know. I don't know what to do here actually. I don't even know why I got this gig. And I was going to say you tell me, but I don't care. They gave me a million dollars for this, so I'm leaving. I also thought there's like alien technology. There's like some telekinesis stuff in this and the use of like the alien beam.
Starting point is 00:47:08 The classic tractor beam. Yeah, that's really interesting. I think what they do with all of that. That's a lot of fun stuff. Yeah. I feel that they get out of that, like manipulating gravity and like the pain of being hit with one of those. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:21 And all that I thought was really interesting. Yeah. Yeah, look, here's the thing. Just having this thought now, I wouldn't put it up there with like Nope in terms of an alien invasion movie or an alien encounter movie that, you know, really asks a lot of interesting questions and sort of like, you know, blows your mind
Starting point is 00:47:40 with some interesting ideas and stuff like that. But I think this was like very well put together. Agreed. And, you know, some interesting ideas and stuff like that. But I think this was like very well put together. Great. And, you know, quite tense. Yep. And I think, yeah, again, not being like, oh, this is a terrifying situation, but I thought it was just sort of, just generally well put together and great ideas.
Starting point is 00:47:56 It does kind of reveal like a lot of the looks and that early on. So maybe that adds to it. Yeah. The fear element kind of disappears when you kind of see pretty early on what's happening. Do you think, without spoiling it, do you think it comes together completely at the end? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:09 I think there's also some ambiguity there which I like, which we'll talk about. You not as much? I think there's maybe a loose, to me there was a loose thread to it in the sense that we have the alien home alone situation and we have the there's a reason why the town has turned against this woman kind of thing. Interpersonal stuff.
Starting point is 00:48:28 And I kind of thought that they would come together more cleanly towards the end. Okay. But maybe people aren't looking for that. But I'll talk when we talk. Let's go into spoilers now. Let's do spoilers. Anyway, it also looks great.
Starting point is 00:48:38 It does look great. You can also see it even though it's mostly set in the dark. That's true, yeah. Best movie ever. I'm going to say best movie ever also. Yeah. And it's free. And it's free. You can just check it out on Hulu mostly set in the dark. That's true, yeah. Best movie ever. I'm going to say best movie ever also. Yeah. And it's free. And it's free.
Starting point is 00:48:46 You can just check it out on Hulu or Disney Plus or whatever. That's right. Spoilers. Also, look, I don't know how they're calculating numbers these days or if anybody's calculating numbers at all. I mean, they are, but we can't see them. Yeah, yeah, but I mean, you know, one more view towards this movie couldn't hurt,
Starting point is 00:49:01 couldn't it, on the official streaming sites. I agree. Okay, now we're in-time spoiler time, folks. Well, I would like that in the sense that then they'll pay for things like this. That's true. It's not just Marvel and Star Wars. Yeah, well, yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:49:13 Yeah, yeah. I'd love to have this as a Disney Plus exclusive. That's right. But, yeah. You have to go through ten menus to get it on Disney Plus. It's just under the Inhumans TV series. Anyway, now we're in big-time spoiler time, folks. No excuses. Big-time spoiler time. So the town hateshumans TV series. Yeah. Anyway, now we're in big time spoiler time, folks. No excuses.
Starting point is 00:49:25 Big time spoiler time. So the town hates this woman. Why? Yeah. Because she killed her friend with a rock when she was 12 or something. That's right. Which you might think is cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:33 It's actually not that cool. Yeah, I think they should go back to school. Yeah. Because you're acting a fool. Yeah. Killing your friend with a rock. I was hoping to find a rhyme there, but I couldn't. You didn't get there?
Starting point is 00:49:42 No. Yeah. So, again, like she comes across the parents of the girl and they're very irate at her, obviously, because they killed her daughter with a rock. Her mother has also passed away, so she's on her own in this house. And there's no one else that she can kind of really turn to when this situation kind of happens for multiple reasons.
Starting point is 00:50:03 Also, that revelation that she killed a friend with a rock, that's quite late and that's very late in the game. But, I mean, I think the bigger, the narrative advice that I thought was very interesting is that nobody talks in this movie. No. There's one line of dialogue, a very short line of dialogue towards the end, but the rest of it is just, and I think this adds to the idea of, well, this is a very, you know.
Starting point is 00:50:24 I mean, the aliens are chatting away, aren't they? They are, aren't they? And sometimes you'll see people in the background saying maybe a little mumble and presumably there are moments where somebody would have had to talk. There's a moment where she buys a bus ticket and she wants to leave and presumably she had to pay unless she used a terminal. Maybe she used a terminal. Little computers.
Starting point is 00:50:42 They can do anything with computers these days, buy a ticket sort of stuff. Maybe online. Maybe online. Printed it off. I don't think she went online and printed it off. She seems quite analog. She doesn't have a mobile phone. It's true.
Starting point is 00:50:52 But, yeah, nobody talks. And I think that, you know, so she has to do a lot of kind of huffing and puffing and a lot of eye acting and a lot of kind of. And you don't. Well, I didn't. I didn't notice for a while that nobody was saying anything in this movie. There's a lot of efforts in it, as they would call it in the video game industry, like a lot of, whoa.
Starting point is 00:51:07 Whoa. Exactly. Whoa, I'm Nathan Drake. Whoa. Whoa, she does say that a lot. That's right. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, she says. Hope this knife opens this door.
Starting point is 00:51:17 It did. Yeah. So it's because she's eventually captured at the end. Yes. She's taken into the alien ship and they're like, let's read this girl's mind. Yeah. And they see that she killed her friend with a rock when she was 12.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Now that is because, and I assume this is the reason, is it because her and her mother had an alien event happen to them? I didn't get that sense, yeah. Well, in that flashback sequence, we see them at home, the mother and the daughter at home working on their little houses and then the beam of light comes down. Oh, I thought that was just like a part of the memory machine. Oh, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:51:56 Yeah, I don't know. See, that's the thing and I guess to me the idea was the implication there was that she told her friend about this alien situation and her friend didn't believe her and then there was an argument and then she killed her friend by it. No, you're probably right. Because her friend pushes her to the ground and then she gets up and she kills her with a rock. But see, in terms of the plot coming together, because, again,
Starting point is 00:52:21 nobody's talking so there's no exposition, which was very good, I thought, because you can build your own story there. But. The reveal I thought was going to be was that her friend was taken over by an alien. Yeah. And then she killed her friend. Like she had another, because also what happens in this movie, she doesn't seem hugely surprised that aliens are in her house.
Starting point is 00:52:44 So I was like oh maybe this has happened before so i my the the storyline i built in my head like her die hard three yeah yeah there's the storyline i built it oh she's got that placard doesn't say anything though because she's mute um but the storyline i built in my head was that her friend was maybe abducted by the aliens and replaced yeah and then she killed her friend maybe you know the friend tried to kill her and she fought back and killed and now everybody thinks she murdered her friend was maybe abducted by the aliens and replaced. Yeah. And then she killed her friend. Maybe, you know, the friend tried to kill her and she fought back and killed. And now everybody thinks she murdered her friend, but actually she murdered an alien. And this whole thing is like a revenge.
Starting point is 00:53:12 Yeah, this is some sort of revenge situation. Yeah, no, that did cross my mind, but from the way it played out. Yeah, right. And there's a couple of things that I thought was a bit ambiguous, was that the alien saw her memories and saw that she killed her friend and she's experienced this great loss. And they're like, well, that's cool. Well, that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:53:30 Were they like, oh, man, we feel for this woman. Let's create a world for her that is beautiful and whole and she can be part of. Or did they see her kill her friend with a rock and go, that's freaking sick actually. Right, yeah, maybe. Or maybe they were like, maybe it's predator rules. Because in the movie, so what the aliens can do in addition
Starting point is 00:53:49 to being like little grey freaks that are all mean and go, hee, hee, hee, hee, creepy little goblins, what they can do is they can cough up a big glob with tentacles in it and then it goes into somebody's mouth and it takes their dna and maybe their memories and what's what have you and then it then the the little creature go goes back to the alien ship and then they can generate an exact copy of that person yeah who looks pretty much like them but has the the little alien little thing in their throat and you can see it moving around yeah so maybe and it happens to
Starting point is 00:54:26 her and she confronts her copy and then she kills it so maybe predator rules they're like she beat it that's cool yeah no she gets she gets delivered but we'll take over the rest of the town but yeah it did seem like they were like when they were watching her memories they were debating like what they were going to do with her like that conversation i was like man i wish they said subtitles i wish i knew what they were saying but uh with it. Like that conversation. I was like, man, I wish they said subtitles. I wish I knew what they were saying. Maybe there's some comedy subtitles. We missed them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:51 I think there would have been a moment where one of them was like. You're seeing those memories? I'm blazed out of my mind. Wear those aliens on those T-shirts that say, you take me to your dealer. I'm smoking a big doobie. Like imagine, like the way I imagined the conversation was, you know, this woman has experienced great loss.
Starting point is 00:55:09 Maybe we should let her go. And another mom was like, you fucking seriously killed like five of us. Like, you know, it felt like there was like actual. She threw boiling water on that child. Yeah, that's right. Exactly. Hit him with a door. So, yeah, I think there was a moment of like, I don't know whether we should let this slide or not.
Starting point is 00:55:24 Yeah, right. But the finale is that she's left alone in the town which has now become overrun with aliens and how much maybe the rest of the world the rest of the world and she's the only person there and all the other people in the town are now like they're all friendly and they're all they're living she's basically living in her idyllic model community which she was made to be a star. In her vintage – little vintage dresses and so forth. Exactly. They've kind of – they've rebuilt her house and they all sort of do her gardening and all this sort of stuff and then they put on a little –
Starting point is 00:55:55 Predator rules, baby. They put on a little garden party and she's having a dance to her old-timey music. Yeah. Why not? Yeah. Another thing I thought – It's like when Batman beat the Predator.
Starting point is 00:56:06 Yeah. They give her a sword. He had to be his butler. Yeah. That's what happened at the end of that, wasn't it? That's right. Yeah. I thought also, and this is probably not true,
Starting point is 00:56:15 but initially I thought, you know how they had that little glob in their throat, which they would then put in a person or whatever. Uh-huh. I thought that maybe those grey aliens are also not the original, like the host. Oh, is the glob thing. Is the parasite alien thing. Do you remember, I think it was called, was it Roswell or Dark Skies?
Starting point is 00:56:37 One of those shows from the 90s where there was like an alien that did, there was the greys and then there was like a parasite kind of thing. Roswell was the teen drama X-Files. Yeah, it wasn't that one. So it would have been Dark Skies. Yeah. Or probably one of those ones, I guess. I thought, dude, just great ideas.
Starting point is 00:56:49 And you're absolutely right, especially considering the ending. It really does seem like something that the Cloverfield people would be like. Yeah. Go on. Go on now. Would you have liked to have seen the big Cloverfield monster at the end? Yes. He's got big long legs, doesn't he?
Starting point is 00:57:03 That's true, yeah. Yeah. Great stuff, Mason. Yeah, you know, I think if you like movies. Yeah. If you like signs, there's a good one. If you like, I would say the movie Prey, which was another whole exclusive. If you like the movie Die Hard.
Starting point is 00:57:18 If you like like a globby thing with tentacles. A globby thing. Going down your throat and you're like. But you like it. Yeah. Then that's the thing. It would going down your throat and you're like. But you like it. Yeah. Then that's the thing. It should be absolutely the movie for you. Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:57:29 Yeah, I see. Check it out. Cool. Should we move on? Yes. What's the next segment called? It's called What We Read It. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:34 What We Gonna Read. Wow. You don't think? It is wow. Yeah. You're not wrong there. I'm doing the thing. What are we reading today?
Starting point is 00:57:48 What's up? That's a great question. What is up? Yeah. We had a whole conversation in between segments. That's right. Not to brag, but I'm going to put that in my what we read. We had a conversation.
Starting point is 00:57:58 So you can't use that one, James. Oh, what? But also, incidentally, I watched the first episode of The Continental, which is the Peacock. Because we were going to talk about that this week. Yeah, the Peacock John Wick prequel. Yeah. On the channel Peacock, it doesn't feature a peacock.
Starting point is 00:58:12 Oh, it doesn't? No, no. Although Winston is something of a peacock with his cravats and so forth, isn't he? I think that's very appropriate. More fun than I expected it to be. Okay. Has it got big TV vibes? It feels a little bit like Pennyworth. How much? Well, that's a good show, isn't it to be. Okay. Has it got big TV vibes?
Starting point is 00:58:25 It feels a little bit like Pennyworth. How much? Well, that's a good show, isn't it? Yeah, apparently. Isn't Mel Gibson in it? He is, yeah. Like, get me The Continental on the phone. The Continental breakfast.
Starting point is 00:58:35 Get it for me. And then Winston's like, Continental, hey, what a great idea. Now, he's the current boss of The Continental. And so the premise is basically that Winston has been in London doing assorted scams and con men stuff. But he's been brought back to America because his brother, who's a real no-good Nick, stole the thing from – he stole – A coin from a whatever?
Starting point is 00:58:58 He did steal – in a manner of speaking, he stole the coin press. No way. The thing he used to make all the coins in the John Wick universe. But that makes completely unique coins every single time every coin is different yep i think i don't know there's no way maybe there'll be maybe next episode they're basically nfts they're also unique oh my god worth so much oh yeah wow oh indeed um but he's back so so his brother stole the thing and killed a bunch of people on the on the hotel property which is you know big rules already in place even though it's the 70s or whatever.
Starting point is 00:59:27 Yeah. And so Mel Gibson's brought him back to be like, you find your brother, and he's like, I won't do it. I won't do it. I'm not going to do it. He's not as witty. I won't do it. I don't want to.
Starting point is 00:59:39 Tired. I just got off this flight. But he's reading How to Win Friends and Influence People. It's like sometimes do a quippy thing. Say a joke. It's like, not bad. Action's pretty good. Okay.
Starting point is 00:59:52 I think maybe what I know, I think the action is because there's like a stairwell fight. There's like his brother is kind of escaping from the Continental and he's shooting a bunch of people and what have you. It's not as good, but you wouldn't expect it to be as good. No. For two reasons. One, because they don't have the Hollywood money
Starting point is 01:00:08 and the stunt people. But also because it's the 70s and nobody knows, like, mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and whatever. And Keanu Reeves isn't in this as far as I'm aware. To the best of my knowledge. But I wonder if, because, you know. You think they're going to see a little John Wick? Maybe there might be a Wick.
Starting point is 01:00:21 Maybe there's another Wick in the family. I wouldn't put it past them. I mean, it's only three episodes, so... Is that all? I think it's a three-episode event, so I don't know if there's going to be time for that.
Starting point is 01:00:30 But you know how in life... Events can be good or bad. Yeah. You know, when you're like, we had that event. Was that as a run name? We had that event. Oh, boy, what a time.
Starting point is 01:00:38 Because, you know, in Star Trek Strange New World, it's set prior to the original Star Trek series, but they've put a James Kirk in there. That's true. So I'm wondering if maybe John Wick is not the first Wick in the family to be a professional super assassin or whatever.
Starting point is 01:00:51 Yeah, okay. I don't know. I love that. Yeah, I'm willing to give it two more episodes, which is fortunate because that's all that's left. Great. Well, we were going to, but I am going to check it out 100%. I love that.
Starting point is 01:01:03 Well, I read the first issue of a little comic called Predator vs Wolverine, which I would only read four issues of that and luckily that's the amount there's going to be. It's Benjamin Percy and Greg Land. Oh, the famous Greg Land. That's right. You a fan? Well, I mean, obviously.
Starting point is 01:01:19 But Greg Land, for people that don't know, was very famous back in the day. He wore his influences on his sleeve and by that I meant he traced a lot of stuff. There is a panel in this where Logan's thinking about his childhood and it's literally that shot from X-Men Wolverine Origins where he's a child and he'd stabbed his dad and he's like yelling up at the fucking, I can find it for you if you want.
Starting point is 01:01:42 Oh, I remember it. It's seared into my memory. No, I know, but I'm saying I can show you the thing that he traced. Oh, okay, right. But basically, so it's set over, I think every time he shows up, it's in different time periods. Also, there's a lot of, I think it was Greg Landon, another guy, but a lot of the women were obviously drawn off pornography.
Starting point is 01:01:57 Yeah, he's doing pornography. Like a lot of them are like, oh, my God, like they've got that face. Anyway. Yeah. No, you're right. I don't remember seeing many pornographic women in this particular comic. But, yes. Just Predator and Wolverine.
Starting point is 01:02:08 That is a thing that he has done. Yes, that's right. So, where is this bloody thing, mate? So, yeah. So, the first one is set in like. Oh, is this era spanning? Yeah, it's era spanning. I was going to say Old West, but it's not the Old West.
Starting point is 01:02:20 It's like a frontier kind of. Okay. Victorian era. Yeah. Back when he was a little fancy lad. Exactly. Oh, no. He's like a like a frontier kind of okay victorian era yeah i think back when he was a little a little fancy lad exactly oh no he's just a young he's got he's got a smooth face young here we go there it is there's the panel that i was talking about so that's that's logan that's young logan and that's thinking about even younger logan oh yeah that's straight from the
Starting point is 01:02:38 movie yeah okay yeah but that and all i actually don't know okay that's true but anyway so but this is this has happened because marvel uh because Disney's purchased 20th Century Fox and so they now have all the Predator and Alien licenses. Alien stuff and whatever. But I enjoyed it. I think I'm interested to see where it goes. I mean, I think they're a really good pairing and I think it's interesting that they're both not completely ageless but they can live for like hundreds
Starting point is 01:03:01 of years and what is a battle between these two? Oh, is it the same Predator every time? Okay, that's interesting. Okay, so it's a real grudge match. Yeah. It's a real nemesis system. Exactly. It's a real nemesis rise of the imperfect.
Starting point is 01:03:14 That's the perfect way to put it. The second time he turns up, Wolverine's like, I've lived so long that I'd completely forgotten about this guy. Where the Predator was clearly like, I'm going to come back. Come on, man. This probably isn't, that wasn't the strangest thing that happened to me that week. Yeah, right. Oh, yeah, because he lives in the Marvel Universe.
Starting point is 01:03:31 Yeah. He's encountered a lot of aliens since then. It's like when you, you know, you realize that you're not at the same level of friendship with like a, just a person you know. You're like, oh, invited to their wedding. Huh. All right. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Oh, and their close friends list on Instagram on instagram interesting interesting yeah but they also said no partners huh what's that i don't know any of their other friends yeah yeah oh guess i'm gonna be at the loser table by myself with all the other weirdos yeah thanks for coming to my wedding by the way yeah no problem love it i'm being at the table. Who was I sitting with at your wedding? Probably Barry. Yeah, probably. Friends from uni. Friends from my uni, I think.
Starting point is 01:04:09 Yeah. Insensitive Dave. No, I don't think you were with him. Wow. I put him on his own. Because he's so insensitive, basically. Yeah, yeah. That's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:16 Yeah. I also read most of the book On the Road, Jack Kerouac. Okay. I had a bit of spare time this week, so I'm like, I'm reading a book. So you gave it to Jack Kerouac, did you? That's exactly right. Okay.
Starting point is 01:04:29 What's that about? It's about, it's a sort of set sort of like late 1940s, early 1950s, and it's just a series of journeys, sort of semi-autobiographical sort of just getting out there in the United States and having little adventures. Great. It's not like – it's not end-of-the-world stuff, but it's kind of like – it's in the writing.
Starting point is 01:04:56 It's like kind of evocative imagery and like evocative kind of prose. It's the – He's like, and then I saw something distinctly American, et cetera. A hamburger. That's right. And I knew that would be for the rest... And I knew we'd reached a new era. That's right, of hamburgers and so forth and fries and shakes.
Starting point is 01:05:18 And if it isn't Ray Kroc, the inventor of McDonald's, and I shook his hand and I said, you, sir, are a true gentleman. Sounds good. Yeah, it's so good but it's it's so you sure it's not just a McDonald's marketing tool I mean I got it in a happy meal but uh I don't know um it's it's a I don't know it's about like it's sort of just about like and most of the characters in this book are sort of analogs of real people yeah who seem to be like smart kids with really bad impulse control. Okay, sure. Like there's a character in it who like saves up all his money and then just buys like the latest brand new car
Starting point is 01:05:56 and then drives it into a ditch like three days later. I saw that. Those kind of people. I don't know. It's just a fun kind of slice of that era. Yeah, okay. What people thought was normal then. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:09 Bad stuff. Yeah. Yeah, cool. All right. Well, what's the time for now? It's time for Letters. Yay. The classic one was Letters, oh, Letters.
Starting point is 01:06:19 We love you. Some letters, they're only a day away. We're going to be here right now. We're going to do letters. All right, a bit of respect for the letters, then. I'm sorry, I apologise. Mason, if you do want to reach this show, which you don't need to. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:06:37 But if you're not Mason or me, you can reach this show by going hashtag weeklyplanetpod on Twitter or weeklyplanetpod at gmail.com. What have you got, Mason? Here's an email from Will. Will? He says, T-shirt encounter after Aunty Donna in London. Oh, yeah. They're doing big shows at the moment. gmail.com. What have you got, Mason? Here's an email from Will. Will! He says, T-shirt encounter after Aunty Donna in London. Oh, yeah. They're doing big shows at the moment. They're doing big shows.
Starting point is 01:06:50 They're doing thousands of people. They're doing 3,500 seaters, I think. Damn. That's very exciting. If you're them. Yeah. And they are. So that's great.
Starting point is 01:07:00 That's great for them. That's very good. Must be nice. Must be nice. Hello, Mason and James. Just came back from seeing Aunty Donna in London. Incredible, very good. Must be nice. Must be nice. Hello, Maceo and James. Just came back from seeing Aunty Donna in London. Incredible, as I'm sure you know. Oh, yeah, we know.
Starting point is 01:07:10 Yeah, I know. You don't need to tell us. They're doing some of their biggest shows ever this weekend, aren't they? Yeah, it must be nice. Yeah, it would be. Must be nice. I actually, if it's the show I'm thinking of, I've seen that show and it's very good. Oh, I haven't seen it, but I've heard it's not very good.
Starting point is 01:07:22 Wow. Who'd you hear it from? Well, it doesn't matter. I don't have to promote it. They sold it all out. That's true. I haven't seen anything, but I've heard it's not very good. Wow. Who'd you hear it from? It doesn't matter. I don't have to promote it. They sold it all out. That's true. It's true. And on the tube on the way back, that's very British, the tube.
Starting point is 01:07:30 I agree. A person sat across from me wearing a Weekly Planet T-shirt. This has never happened to me before, so I wanted to acknowledge and not be weird, but he was avoiding my eye, probably on purpose, but we both had headphones in. It was my stop, so my solution was to point probably too close to his T-shirt and just give him a thumbs up. It was weird. That sounds weird. If he's listening,
Starting point is 01:07:48 I hope he knows I just wanted to compliment his great taste in apparel. Thank you so much. I love the podcast. I wonder if it came across as a threat. Like that kind of aggressive close point. Yeah, you. You know what he did. You got some nerve. Yeah, yeah. That's cool. Will says, I started listening after I
Starting point is 01:08:03 got married in 2015, and this year I got divorced, so I guess I have to stop now. Will from London. Hope says, I started listening after I got married in 2015, and this year I got divorced, so I guess I have to stop now. Will from London. Hope you're doing all right, Will, and thank you for the kind words and pointing at a T-shirt. That's right. Yeah. If only everybody could point at a T-shirt, life would be a lot better,
Starting point is 01:08:15 wouldn't it? I agree. It would be a different place, wouldn't it? Yeah, it would be. For better or worse. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it would be different. I agree.
Starting point is 01:08:22 This is from Dion Evans who says, hashtag weekly planner pod. Hi both, love the podcast. Thank you. Wanted to ask what's the best TMNT comic to start with? I read The Last Ronin after the book club and I'm looking to start a main run. Is the IDW stuff any good? Keep up the great work.
Starting point is 01:08:38 Yes. I'd say start with that. It started like 2011-ish. It's still going. It's good. Just read through that. Read through that. There's all sorts-ish. It's still going. It's good. Just, you can read through that. Read through that. It's all sorts of its own continuity. There's a fun
Starting point is 01:08:50 colourful cast of characters that are brought through. There's also a bunch of other good Ninja Turtles. You could read the original comics for example. Yeah, I like, maybe grab the first Mirage trade paperback. The origin of, you've got the origin of the turtles, you get the shredder. And that's a good, I mean that's sort of the basis for the turtles, you get Shredder, and that's a good – I mean, that's sort of the basis
Starting point is 01:09:06 for the original live-action movie. And I really like the art, that old-style art. I think it's, you know, the Eastman and Laird art. Exactly. I think it's great. I don't know if we've talked about these, but there's also a bunch of crossover stuff. Oh, yes.
Starting point is 01:09:18 They've crossed over Stranger Things recently. There was a crossover. They've done Batman. There's also a movie, which I still haven't watched, but apparently the Ninja Turtles Batman movie is really good. There's also a comic book. There's a Ninja Turtles Street Fighter comic, which I have not read.
Starting point is 01:09:32 There's a Ninja Turtles Power Rangers comic as well. Ninja Turtles Savage Dragon. Oh my god. Green guys all the time. There's a Ghostbusters one as well. So yeah, if you're interested in crossover stuff, apparently a lot of that is quite good. But look into it, obviously, Mason. Look into it.
Starting point is 01:09:48 Yeah. Cool. Here's an email from Matthew. Hi, Matthew. Hey, pals. I was on a Wikipedia rabbit hole which led to me reading about the crazy troubled production of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Oh, yes. It would be a good one if you ever needed more Caravan of Garbage to film. Well, funny you mentioned that. I was on a live episode of Do Go On.
Starting point is 01:10:03 Yeah. Like a year and a bit ago and we talked about the island of Dr. Moreau, so people can just go back and check that out. Insane situation. And if somebody would like to make it a fun project, they could cut it up and make their own caravan of garbage about that. Just cut out all the good bits. Put James in there.
Starting point is 01:10:17 Yeah, yeah. James, say a witty thing now and we can just plug it right in. Val Kilmer would never. Nice, nice. More like island of Dr. More don't. More like Island of Dr. More Don't. Or like Island of Dr. Less-O. Why are you saying more stuff? Everybody got recordings of you.
Starting point is 01:10:32 No, we'll pitch shift it and I'll sound like you. Okay, then we'll be me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Higher? Yes. More like Dr. Reversed. Is that what I sound like? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:38 Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cool, man. That's great. More like the Y-land of Dr. Moreau. Whoa. But less. But less, yeah, obviously.
Starting point is 01:10:45 Nice. From Nick. Oh, hang on, but he just says, I go to NYU film school and I'm currently studying abroad in London. Whoa. I'm studying abroad or two. Nice. That's good.
Starting point is 01:10:58 Mason. No, I like that. Can I be the official tourist of the province? That's good. That's a good salacious kind of lecherous behavior there, James. Thank you. But what I was going to say is maybe he's the guy in London because the other guy in London on the tube saw the guy with the T-shirt.
Starting point is 01:11:11 I'm wondering if they're the same guys. They might be the same guys. Or there could be three guys. There's three guys? We have that many listeners at least. There'd be at least three guys over there. But not in London. The biggest listeners are the US and then it's the UK and Canada
Starting point is 01:11:23 and then it's like Australia, New Zealand, something. I don't know. Is that right? I love that. I don't know. I don't look at metrics. I only look at all the YouTube ad revenue. It's the only metric I need.
Starting point is 01:11:34 That's great. This is from Nick Jamali who says, Hashtag with the Planet Pod. First time tweeting the pod. Well done. You made it. Long-time listener. Currently watching The Dark Knight Rises,
Starting point is 01:11:44 which could be the greatest, worst movie of all time. Why haven't you done a Caravan of Garbage on the Dark Knight trilogy? Keep up the great work. Well, we tricked everybody. We did the Twilight movies when we were pretending we were doing the Dark Knight movies. But we will.
Starting point is 01:11:58 We just haven't yet. That's right. Probably when the next Batman movie comes out. Nice. Two years. Maybe before. Maybe before. I honestly don't know. Maybe if we next Batman movie comes out. Nice. Two years. Maybe before. Maybe before. I honestly don't know.
Starting point is 01:12:07 Maybe if we have like a couple of weeks. Yeah. Not a lot of content's coming out. Yeah. No, I haven't revisited those in ages and I've been purposely not, even though I want to watch them. Yeah. Because, yeah, I want them fresh in my mind for when I watch them
Starting point is 01:12:20 for the Caravan of Garbage. Anything else, Mason? Here's one more email. This is from James. Now, James emailed a couple of weeks ago because he was having a – Cool. He was all burned out because he'd been pulling 12-hour days in a row. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:31 And we said lighten up. We said lighten up, you big jerk. Okay. We said, yeah, yeah. He's emailed back. He says, hi again, James and Mason. You read out my email on the podcast a couple of weeks ago and joked about when would it get fun and lighthearted.
Starting point is 01:12:41 So I just wanted to give you guys the fun and lighthearted update. I'm doing much better now, and while the 12-hour workdays I was pulling were long and stressful, they were for a dream job I started this year editing for a YouTube channel, which I got partly due to some really helpful advice your editor, Ben, gave me about editing for YouTube. So all the days were long and was doing something I love. That's sick as hell, man. Thanks again for helping me through a rough time and keep up the great work. We will keep up the great work.
Starting point is 01:13:03 That's right, and thank you to Ben. Thank you to Ben. He's one of the best in the biz. That's right. And thank you to Ben. Thank you to Ben. He's one of the best in the biz. It's true. He was a bit crook this week. That's why Caravan of Garbage was a bit late. That's crook. But he's back at work.
Starting point is 01:13:13 I made sure of it. Okay, good. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. No, he's all right. He said no more advice to aspiring YouTubers. You do not have time.
Starting point is 01:13:19 Yeah. But so Lauren's edited this week. Get back to editing a video on a character no one cares about, if you wouldn't mind. Exactly. Got one more from Manda Man who always writes in and she says such lovely things. This one says, ahoy, hoy, thinking about the MCU,
Starting point is 01:13:33 we all recognise how well the cast, many characters, actors are. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, is there any you feel are woefully miscast or if not that are severely underused for their talent? Pip, Pip and Cheerio, lads. Walton Goggins should come back. Oh, he was Ant-Man. He was in Ant-Man for two minutes, yeah. I know he's dead, but he was a Hydra guy.
Starting point is 01:13:54 He's in Iron Man 2. Gary. Sinise. No. Shandling. Yeah, right. Gary Shandling. Well, they could bring him back where they are.
Starting point is 01:14:00 They could. As a shambling zombie. That's lucky. Bring him back. Yeah. The cast of The Eternals. Oh, yeah. The entire cast.
Starting point is 01:14:08 Yeah, they deserved better, didn't they? Yeah. I mean, you know, is there time for – when are we getting the critical re-evaluation of Eternals? Because I will not be part of it. When should we do a Caravan of Garbage on Eternals? I don't know. We should at some point, I think.
Starting point is 01:14:21 Eternals 2? Yeah, sure. When Eternals 2 comes out. Yeah. There'd be others. Okay, what about, let's say main cast though. I feel like, okay, who's the guy who plays the arms dealer in like Black Widow and stuff?
Starting point is 01:14:34 Oh, Rick Mason. Yeah, and then he shows up in, what's his name? Secret Invasion. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. You think he's underused? I like him, yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:41 See, the thing about. He's in Handmaid's Tale. Oh, the thing about the MCU in handmade style oh the thing about um the thing about the mcu is if they do anything right even more so than dc yeah but even more so than special effects or costume or anything like that yeah even more than like the iron man suit at its best the the best thing they do is casting i think great like there's you know they they generally speaking hire people who are good at it, who work well in the role, who are nice people who go visit kids in hospital.
Starting point is 01:15:09 Yeah, for the most part, haven't done crimes. For the most part, haven't done crimes. But there are exceptions to that. There sure are. Yeah. But sometimes they break up crimes and I think that's cool, you know? Oh, yeah. I wasn't thinking of that one in particular, but yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:22 Well, there's, okay, there is more. But I mean, they've also hired most of the people in Hollywood at this point. Exactly. You're going to get some crimes in there. Yeah. What about the guy, Kingsley Ben-Amiya, who was in Secret Invasion? Yeah. Well, I mean, Olivia Colman as well.
Starting point is 01:15:35 Yeah, that's true. Yeah. I mean, some of them could come back. I guess the thing here is that we've reached a point where they've gone, okay, well, there are some still A-list stars, like very talented people, you know, who were busy when we were starting the MCU or weren't as big stars when we started the MCU. Let's find them a role. But unfortunately they're being lumped in at the kind
Starting point is 01:15:55 of the assembly line end of the MCU. Exactly. But I love that. Yeah. But also the thing is you can just recast them. Yep. Because no one saw Secret Invasion. Well, that's what they're going to. They did with Gemma Chan. jemma chan got a second go so a few of them have yeah um but also
Starting point is 01:16:09 i i mean there's rumors that you know the deadpool 3 and then secret wars or invasion or whatever they're doing will be a reboot will be yeah so that's deadpool 3 will be like a send-off of the fox universe and then a bunch of those characters will show up in secret wars and then they'll reboot all the characters and then they'll eventually go back to the original, original characters. That's what they'll do. Cool. In my opinion.
Starting point is 01:16:30 In my humble opinion. Wow, there you go. Anyway, that's. I'm trying to think of one more guy. Who's one more? One more person who's. Yeah, miscasting is rare, isn't it? I mean, Don Cheadle's not into that much.
Starting point is 01:16:42 I know he's getting a series or a movie. But I would like to see more Don Cheadle because I like him. That's true. Yeah, it's more underused than it is. Yeah. Yeah. But also the thing about that is as well, like a lot of these characters you could just.
Starting point is 01:16:54 Oh, William Jackson Harper. Let me see again. He's in, he's the good place guy. He's cheating in the good place. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's a great one. That's the one. That's a really good one.
Starting point is 01:17:02 Where it's like, oh, you give him a guy who's in Ant-Man Quantumania for five minutes. And he's stuck in the quantum realm forever. That's the one. That's a really good one. That's the one where it's like, give him a guy who's in Ant-Man Quantumania for five minutes. And he's stuck in the quantum realm forever? That's right. And he's just a guy, but he's, I don't know. But again, like a lot of people are like, he could be Mr. Fantastic, and I think he definitely could have been. And I know that's kind of sort of playing into the type he was in The Good Place, but why not?
Starting point is 01:17:19 I don't care. He'd be great. Yeah, exactly. No, he's a weird guy stuck in the quantum realm. Okay, that's my final answer. If anybody needs another shot at the MCU, not that everybody necessarily is just begging for his four-picture deal or whatever. But you could paint him blue and make him another character.
Starting point is 01:17:33 Paint him blue. Or give him a mustache. They did it with Gemma Chan. That's the method. The methodology. But, yeah, give him a bigger role as anything. Yeah, exactly. Cool.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Or you know what? He could be Mr. Terrific. Have they already cast Mr. Terrific? Maybe they have. Fuck, that's a great question. Let, exactly. Cool. Or you know what? Make him, he could be Mr. Terrific. Have they already cast Mr. Terrific? Maybe they have. Fuck, that's a great question. Let me check. Okay. There's so many now.
Starting point is 01:17:51 MCU, Mr. Terrific. DC. Oh, yeah, sorry. What am I doing? You think you're Mr. Fantastic? Yeah, I am. DC, Mr. Terrific. Did they, I think there was, were there rumours?
Starting point is 01:17:59 There might have been, yeah. He's definitely on the cards as a character, so. Oh, it's the dude, yeah, it's Edie Guthage who played Darwin. Oh, it is too. Okay, well, he's great as well. All right. That's a good choice. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:12 Then let's not double up, shall we? Mm-hmm. Anything else? No, that's the whole show. Ah! You got a problem with that? No. No, no, no.
Starting point is 01:18:22 Because you laughed, but I wasn't trying to be funny. I just. Now I'm embarrassed. Folks, thank you so much for listening to the show. We absolutely appreciate it. Thank you for telling your friends about it because that is how we get new listeners. And another way we get new listeners is if you leave a fabulous five-star review
Starting point is 01:18:39 on your podcast catcher of choice. Do it in app and then people go, this podcast has got a lot of stars. Is it good? Do say that. They go, Siri, is this good? Siri, is it good? No.
Starting point is 01:18:52 Hey, Bixby, is it good? What's Bixby? Bixby's the Samsung assistant. I've never used it and I've never installed it. There's a dedicated button. Is there? Don't touch that. You want to start Bixby?
Starting point is 01:19:02 I'm like, I don't. Absolutely not. What did you say to me? That's right. Unless it's the voice and want to start Bixby? I'm like, I don't. Absolutely not. What did you say to me? That's right. Unless it's the voice and image of Bill Bixby, in which case I'll take it. Absolutely. Anyway, reviews.
Starting point is 01:19:11 But then your phone gets mad at you. Yeah. Yeah, you can leave it in there. That'd be great. This one is from Mumbles who left us five stars and says, one of my favorite pods. This is one of my favorite podcast shows. I discovered them right at the start of the pandemic
Starting point is 01:19:24 and they certainly got me through some rough patches. I can always count on a laugh or two from listening to them. They talk about a bunch of nerdy stuff I'm into yet doesn't take themselves too seriously. Thank you to James and Mason for all the laughs and interesting chats. Also, kudos to the rest of the crew. They put together a bunch of fun videos. I literally listened to the podcast show and then rewatched the video version. It has such great clips. That's true. I take it very seriously. Me too. And I'm Samson78 says, you will want to listen to this one. I've been watching on YouTube on and off for the past few years.
Starting point is 01:19:51 In 2022, I made the jump to the podcast as well as Caravan of Garbage. I'll often listen to episodes, then watch them on YouTube. Oh, my God, two people doing this. These two are great together, but he wrote G-R-A-T-E, which might be a little bit of an insult. I never fail to elicit a chuckle. If I had to make a criticism, it would be they need to teach me more Australian swear words and phrases.
Starting point is 01:20:09 I request that they make this a regular part of the show. Yeah, you bloody drongo. Big old Aussie ding dong. That's right. That's good stuff, Mason. Yeah, that's right. Even by your standards. I agree.
Starting point is 01:20:21 Folks, if you want to get in contact with the show, you can get a weekly planet pod at gmail.com, at Facebook, at Twitter, at Bandcamp. You can go to the Planet Broadcasting Great Mates Facebook group and you can go to the Weekly Planet Discord and Reddit. Do you hear that? Dog stuff? Maybe.
Starting point is 01:20:35 Yeah. Sounds like something walking on the roof. Oh, maybe it's a roof walker. Maybe it's a roof walker. That's what we have in Australia. Maybe it's the roof seal. Arf, arf. That's what we have in Australia. Maybe it's the roof seal. Arf, arf. That's Australian. Don't worry about it. There we go.
Starting point is 01:20:47 Don't worry about it. But speaking of all the subreddits and discords, thank you to Maisie and Sarabi and Fidel who moderate over there, and they also do a bunch of stuff including TikToks and clips channels and all sorts of stuff. They have to. They have to. That's what we told them.
Starting point is 01:21:02 Yeah, that's right. Starting point is 01:21:52 Just get over there. He's got a dustpan and a brush and he's moving a spider. Get over there. What do you think about that new game? People are like, it's good, but also the Switch version is dog shit apparently. I saw that, yeah. And some of the voice acting is not great apparently. Well, it's Mortal Kombat.
Starting point is 01:22:11 Some of the voice acting is good in Mortal Kombat. I agree. Yeah. It was that first one when that guy goes, I'm about to beat you, man. And it was that kick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, with all these feet happening.
Starting point is 01:22:19 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's pretty cool. I don't know. I haven't played it yet, but. I didn't play the last one, so I'll play that first. And the reason I didn't play it is because I bought a physical copy on the Switch, and it showed up, and it was a box, and it had a code in it.
Starting point is 01:22:31 Oh, yeah. And then I was like, great, I'll order another one. And so I messaged, I said, is this the box? Yeah. And this has come with a box. This has come with a cartridge. No, I said, yeah, whatever. I worded it in a way that I shouldn't have, and the same thing turned up.
Starting point is 01:22:45 That's great. And I gave one of them to Mark Bonanno. Go. Well, it must be nice. It must be nice selling our arenas over a free copy of Mortal Kombat. It must be nice. I don't know what he did with it. If I'm going to buy one more game by the end of the year,
Starting point is 01:22:57 it'll probably be Armored Core 6. What about the Bluey game? What about Spider-Man 2? That's coming out. Oh, man, okay. Well, they're both PS5, so I guess. There's a new Mario game I want to get. I'm not going to get that. My son wants to get this new Transformers game, That's coming out. Oh, man. Okay. Well, they're both PS5, so I guess. There's a new Mario game I want to get. I'm not going to get that.
Starting point is 01:23:06 My son wants to get this new Transformers game, Earthspark something. Oh, yeah. Cool. Can I get that? Yeah. Nice. There's a new Bluey game. It's four player.
Starting point is 01:23:12 I can play with my family, Mason. There's only one Bluey, though? No, but you can play as Bluey's family. Oh, yuck. What? No, they're all characters. They're all fun characters. Okay, great.
Starting point is 01:23:20 I can be the dad. Is it like that Simpsons arcade game? Yeah, but you just beat people up. That's cool. Yeah, just tearing through the neighborhood. All right. Anything else? That's the whole show.
Starting point is 01:23:32 All right. Thanks, everyone. Next week, The Creator. Love it. Bye. Bye. As women, our life stages come with unique risk factors, like when our estrogen levels drop during menopause,
