Starting point is 00:00:00 The Delphi murders are one of the most infamous American true crime cases from the past decade. For over five years, it seemed like the gruesome killings of two young girls from a tiny town located between Chicago and Indianapolis would never be solved. Locals were horrified and shocked that something so tragic could happen in their previously exceptionally safe community. Murders like these just weren't supposed to happen in a quaint little Indiana town of less than 3,000 people, where everyone knew everyone, or at least where they thought they did. Delphi, Indiana is a town where, prior to these murders, kids, young kids, could safely play in the streets, ride their bikes around town, or run around in the local woods
Starting point is 00:00:42 without any adult supervision or worry. It was a quiet town where the biggest most newsworthy event each year was an annual bacon festival. It's a sleepy community off the beaten path lying along US Highway 421 over 15 miles from the nearest freeway I-65. With its three-story historic classic revival limestone courthouse and a quaint main street lined with well-preserved three and four story brick buildings, some of which date back to the 1850s, it looks and feels like a throwback to a safer, more prosperous time. The pristine, picturesque, and well-maintained Wabash and Erie Canal Park sits just ten blocks north of the Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District, which includes the recently restored Delphi Opera House. The crime rate outside of these two murders? Practically nonexistent. According to FBI crime statistics, in 2015, just two years
Starting point is 00:01:39 before the Delphi murders, there were only two reported aggravated assaults, zero murders, one robbery, one stolen car, six burglaries, and a grand total of 56 thefts, which includes crimes as petty as shoplifting or some local teens stealing your lawn ornaments in the middle of the night. A crime on par with a pair of gruesome child murders had never happened before in the city's nearly 200 year history, going back to when Delphi was first platted in 1828. But then that changed on Monday, February 13, 2017, when 14-year-old Libby German and her friend, 13-year-old Abby Williams, had the day off of school. After a sleepover with some other girls the night before, they were eager to get outside and walk the Monon High Bridge trail
Starting point is 00:02:27 located near an abandoned railroad bridge that has long served as a popular spot for local thrill-seeking kids. The girls were dropped off early that afternoon by Libby's older sister Kelsey, and then Libby's dad was supposed to pick them up a couple of hours later. But when he went to grab them, they were nowhere to be found. And then, within a few hours, it felt as if everyone in town was out looking for them. Their dead bodies will be found in the woods the following day near the bridge. Investigators refused to share the horrifying details to protect the investigation, but they did make it clear it was a murder case.
Starting point is 00:03:03 The victims' families and the residents of Delphi were devastated. They questioned how something so terrible could have happened in their town. A few days later, the police released an image, later revealed to have come from Libby's phone, showing a man approaching the girls on the railroad bridge, as well as a brief audio clip of a man telling the girls to go down the hill. And the man on this video will become known as Bridge Guy. And now almost every white middle-aged man in Delphi is a suspect. The families hope that with this evidence, the case will be solved quickly, but instead
Starting point is 00:03:36 they would have to wait over half a decade. And then when an arrest was finally made, the residents of Delphi were horrified to learn that Bridge Guy was no drifter, no disturbed stranger who had passed through town and then likely left forever. Instead, he was a local monster, thought to very likely still be living amongst them. This week, we'll cover the Delphi murders investigation from its beginning to its end, learn how the police found and arrested their suspect, and cover the recent cartoonishly combative and seemingly bungled trial of the man arrested for their murders. Was he convicted? Find
Starting point is 00:04:10 out on this week's true crime. Don't think I've come across a murder trial where the judge and the defense lawyers have hated each other this much before. Horrible crimes can happen anywhere, even in little towns where you'd least expect them addition of Time Suck. This is Michael McDonald and you're listening to Time Suck. Well, happy Monday and welcome or welcome back to the Cult of the Curious. I'm Dan Cummins. Shen Yun, backup dancer. Former Epoch Times editor fired for not being partisan. The gods of Time S suck have decreed that I share no announcements today. They'd like to use that time for some extra Kaliope music. You'll see. Oh, you'll see. It's Topic O'Clock. Let's begin. Starting things off today with a brief overview of the city of Delphi, adding to what I shared about the town already in the cold open, before diving into a big old timeline of the Delphi murders following the investigation and trial as it unfolded in real time.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And if you count appeals or pending appeals, it's still unfolding. Delphi, as I mentioned, is a cute little town of just 2,961 people. As of the 2020 census, it is the county seat of the very rural Carroll County, Indiana. It is the biggest town in Carroll County. The population of the entire county, just 20,306 people. According to the city's website, Delphi was named after the ancient Greek city of the same name. For many years, the Greeks considered Delphi to be the center of the world. It was the home of the ancient Greece's most important oracle, shaman or priest-like figure thought to know the will of the gods. Delphi, Indiana has never been
Starting point is 00:06:17 considered to be nearly that important, but it's very cute. It was first settled by Europeans in 1824. The family of Henry Robinson, the first to arrive, was platted in 1828 by General Samuel Milroy on donated land. Delphi was made the seat of Carroll County the same year it was platted, and the county itself also established in 1828. Named after Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence who would die four years later in 1832. A founding father, Carole was, for a bit of trivia, the only Catholic to sign the declaration
Starting point is 00:06:51 and was one of the wealthiest and one of the most educated founders. Educated by Jesuits in France, he spoke five languages fluently, owned a massive family of plantation in Maryland, and was worth, when the American Revolution began, the equivalent of 375 million dollars, equivalent of that today, which made him the wealthiest man in all of the American colonies for a time. The Carroll County seat of Delphi was built in a favorable location in a large valley between the Wabash River and Deer Creek. The first settlers who moved to the area built their homes and mills along the banks of both these waterways. India's very first state highway as rudimentary as it was was laid in 1826 along the Wabash River from the National Road at Terre Haute
Starting point is 00:07:36 to Fort Wayne guiding settlers to Delphi. Delphi was officially established as a town in 1835 then officially incorporated as a city three decades later in 1866. Backing up to 1840, the original Wabash and Erie Canal was completed, spanning from Fort Wayne to Delphi. Another canal connecting Delphi to Toledo. The Miami and Erie Canal was finished by 1843, which opened the area up to further commerce. These two canals were combined with two other canals, all collectively referred to as the Wabash and Erie Canal,
Starting point is 00:08:08 and it was the longest canal ever built in North America, over 460 miles long. The canals connected Delphi to the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. But following the railroad coming to town in 1858, commercial use of these canals faded, and by 1874 they were barely used for commerce at all and portions of the canals began to be dried out and filled back in. The Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center, an open-air village located on the banks of
Starting point is 00:08:35 the canal in Delphi, Indiana, opened in 2003 and is dedicated to remembering the town's early canal days. The interpretive center includes a model canal with a miniature reservoir, aqueduct, lock, and gristmill. Almost all of Delphi's historic buildings and most of the town's impressive and opulent historic homes were built during the town's canal era, which was the town's heyday, from the 1840s to the early 1870s, built by wealthy merchants and tradesmen making all that canal cash. More recent decades the area has become known less for commerce and more for nature.
Starting point is 00:09:09 It's got a lot of parks and trails for a town of its size. The city of Delphi despite a small population provides five separate well-maintained parks for the enjoyment of its residents and visitors. City Park, Overlook Park, Riley Park, the Riley Park Annex, and Trailhead Park. Together these parks offer various sports facilities for basketball, tennis, baseball, and softball, volleyball, and soccer. Most of the parks have picnic tables. Some have picnic shelters. Most have some playground equipment. There are a ton of paths and trails throughout the park system suitable for walking, cycling, just enjoying nature, the history of the area.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Also a bunch of well-maintained trails and walkways existing outside of the park system. The Monon High Bridge Trail, where the two girls were captured and killed, is a historical trail that follows the Monon Railroad right-of-way from Eastern Delphi, crossing Indiana Highway 25, aka the Hoosier-Hartland Highway, on its way to the Monon High Bridge over Deer Creek. This paved trail has several benches, three kiosks with surveillance cameras, two plazas, a bridge also runs through a heavily wooded area with beautiful and expansive views of Deer Creek and there's even a carving of a steam locomotive, oh my god, of
Starting point is 00:10:22 steam locomotive 765 and there we go, at the far end of the Freedom Bridge that celebrates Delphi's rich railroad history. It's got a lot of shit. A lot more than the town I grew up in. Back when I had about 500 people. We had one park. Still do. It was and is about the size of a backyard.
Starting point is 00:10:40 A big backyard. That's a bathroom. That's pretty cool. It does have a few tables. Work-wise, the largest employer in town and actually in the county is the Indiana Packers Corporation based in Delphi where all kinds of pork-related
Starting point is 00:10:54 products are made. Everything from jumbo hot dogs and premium lunch meat to thick-cut bacon and double-smoked hams. Eat that fucking meat! Vegans, not welcome in Delphi. In order to become a resident, you have to eat a half pound of either bacon or hot dogs in front of the mayor, who does hold a gun to your head while you do so, with his itchy finger hovering over that trigger.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I don't know why I said that. You can be a vegan there. If you want to be the local freak, you really do love meat there. I mean, it's the home of the annual Indiana bacon festival for fuck's sake hog folk land Lou Graham original voice of foreigner the dude who sang feels like the first time dirty white boy double vision I Don't know that's how that one goes hot blooded and check it and see she's as cold as ice
Starting point is 00:11:44 and more actually saying a fucking shit ton of amazing classic songs uh he headlined the festival last year in 2024 probably ate some bacon he followed a few other bands and no surprise here did follow a bacon eating contest as far as proximity to other bigger towns delphi just under a 30-minute drive to lafayette indiana home to a little over 70,000 people. About an hour and 20 minutes from the city of Indianapolis, home to over 2 million people in
Starting point is 00:12:10 this metro area. And now one more thing about Delphi before moving on, just because it really cracks me up. One of Delphi's most notable residents was a dude named William Fritz. William Fritz Afflis Jr. to be exact, who was a professional football lineman for the Green Bay Packers from 1951 to 1954 before he turned to a career in professional wrestling in 1954. He would wrestle all the way until 1989, recently was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021. Very popular heel in the 50s, 60s and 70s, but that's not why I'm bringing him up.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I'm bringing him up because of his wrestling name. It was the fucking best. He was primarily marketed under the moniker of Dick the Bruiser, but wait, it gets better. Sometimes they would take the the out of that. He would literally be billed as dick bruiser. Are you fucking kidding me? dick bruiser six feet one inch 261 pounds of dick bruising man meat According to one bio on him his typical opponent was an up-and-coming young and unknown wrestler who would be pulverized by dick Bruiser.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Ugh. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday! At the Carroll County Fairgrounds, Delphi's own Clarence the Wonder of the West Whistler takes on another local legend, Dick Bruiser! Will Clarence be able to overcome Dick Bruiser's powerful hip thrust based attacks with uncanny strength? Or will the Whistler get his cock rocked? We'll sell you the whole seat, but you'll only need the edge. Okay after all that nonsense. And Clarence Whistler is another professional wrestler from Delphi who was also very famous
Starting point is 00:14:01 in his heyday. His heyday was back in the 1880s though. I hope you have a pretty good picture now in your mind of Delphi. It's a cute little town previously best known as the home of Dick Bruiser. When people come to a slow down or raise their kids, eat some bacon. A place to have a better work-life balance and many are able to find in a more urban area with faster paces of life and higher costs. It's a place where there is a historic but recently renovated and modernized five-bedroom, five-bathroom, three-story, over 3,700 square feet, home with a library and formal dining room, sit in one block outside the
Starting point is 00:14:36 historic downtown business district, currently on sale for $368,000. Too expensive? Fine. Get a three-bath, two-bedroom, 1,700 square foot, non-historic home but is a home in great condition, also in town, for $112,000. This is the kind of heartland town that John Cougar Melloncamp has written so many songs about. The kind of Indiana town where Jack and Diane grow up, if you know that reference. It's where people choose to live a life, a quiet life, where they can raise their kids in a safe community while they can commute to work over to the outskirts
Starting point is 00:15:11 of Indianapolis or into Lafayette, where they can maybe work at a little cafe or shop in town, one they could buy for pennies on the dollar compared to most places. Or maybe they can work at the Indiana Packers Corporation and make those hot dog bucks. It's a town where, like I said, everyone knows everyone or they thought they did before the murders.
Starting point is 00:15:30 A place where kids play in the streets and on and around the many wooded trails and in the parks without supervision or at least where they used to. But now, now a big old shadow hangs over the town. One first cast in February of 2017. One that still hangs over the town in a sense because despite a guilty conviction not everyone is sure the right man is in prison. And with the setting now established let's begin our timeline of the Delphi murders that shook this little town to its core. Shrap on those boots soldier we We're marching down a time-sucked timeline.
Starting point is 00:16:07 On February 13th 2017 14 year old Libby German and 13 year old Abby Williams went on a walk together along the Delphi historic trail in the east end of town. It'll be the last time anyone who knows and cares for them will ever see them alive. Libby and Abby were best friends, finishing their last year at junior high together. They'd grown up together, live in just a few minutes walk apart from one another just outside of Delphi. Liberty Rose Lynn German, known to friends and family as Libby,
Starting point is 00:16:40 was born on December 27th, 2002 in nearby Lafayette, due to Delphi just being too small to have a proper hospital of its own. She grew up playing volleyball and soccer and enjoyed swimming, painting, and crafting. Her grandmother, Becky Patty, described her as an active, smart, and social girl who had a lot of friends. She liked to watch true crime shows and, ironically, hoped to help solve unsolved murder cases one day. Libby's mother, Carrie Timmons, said she was a funny and caring kid who wanted to make everyone laugh and that she was also fearless, a highly independent free spirit who didn't want help very often. She preferred to do everything herself.
Starting point is 00:17:16 For example, when Libby wanted her bedroom painted purple, her grandma was going to do it. But then when her grandma kept pushing it off, she eagerly took on the project herself. Libby's BFF, Abigail Joyce Williams, known as Abby, was born on June 23rd, 2003 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, before her mom and her moved to Delphi where her maternal grandparents live. She was an inquisitive girl who loved being outdoors, played for her school's volleyball team, and played saxophone in the school band. At the time of her death, she was trying to teach herself to play the keyboard. Abby and her sister would sit together, Abby on keyboard, her sister playing guitar, and they would try and play songs they heard in church.
Starting point is 00:17:56 She was an avid reader who was proud of her high reading count number and her language arts class. She liked to go camping in both Indiana and Michigan. She had a number of relatives in both places, liked to swim and ride around on ATVs with family and friends. She enjoyed art and photography, drawing, and creating little masterpieces that her mom and grandparents would proudly display in their homes. And she loved animals, especially her cat Bongo. Great cat name. She and her best friend Livy were looking forward to being high schoolers together. Cameron Venata, a school friend of both girls, spoke to the Journal and Courier,
Starting point is 00:18:28 a little newspaper based in Lafayette, and said that Abby was funny. She was silly. She was kinda like me. She liked making jokes all the time, which I liked. And Cameron said about Libby, everybody knew Liberty. She was really funny too. On the night of February 12th, 2017, a Sunday night,
Starting point is 00:18:45 Abby and Libby had spent the evening at Libby's grandparents' house. Libby and her older sister Kelsey were living full-time with the grandparents. Their mom Carrie was living in Lexington, Kentucky due to a, quote, complex family dynamic. The schools in Delphi were closed the following day, Monday the 13th, for a scheduled makeup snow day. Sounds like according to some sources there were other girls also staying the night. Fun little junior high sleepover. My daughter Monroe has had so many of those in recent years. Such a special time in a girl's life. The next day whatever other girls were at the sleepover they went home and Libby and Abby decided they wanted to go to the old Monon High Bridge, an abandoned railroad bridge over Deer Creek, about
Starting point is 00:19:24 1,500 feet just past the eastern edge of town. Monon High Bridge, often just called High Bridge, is an abandoned railroad bridge over Deer Creek, a creek that runs right through the middle of Delphi. It's an off-limits area next to a paved, well-maintained trail called the Monon High Bridge Trail. While this bridge is officially off-limits to the public, local kids have walked out on it for decades now. Sounds like a rite of passage. I bet Dick Bruiser used to walk out on that bridge and stop trains with nothing but willpower and cock. The bridge sits about 70 feet above the creek below it. It's in pretty bad shape these days. Pretty bad state of disrepair.
Starting point is 00:20:00 There's no railings. Some of the ties are rotting or missing. There's no trail on the far side of the bridge, an area that's heavily wooded. Those who walk down this bridge typically turn around and make their way back across it. Libby's sister Kelsey German recalled how the two of them would go mess around together on that bridge the previous summer. Kelsey said she didn't want to cross it, but she also didn't want to let her little sister Libby cross it by herself and Libby was said to be fearless and she definitely wanted to do it. Kelsey had slept in on the morning of February the 13th. She was in the bathroom getting ready to go to her boyfriend's house before her shift at work when Libby came in, asked if she could go to Highbridge and wanted her sister to come along with her. Kelsey did not want to go, but she agreed to take Libby and also her friend Abby. And Derek, Libby's dad, said that he
Starting point is 00:20:45 would pick the girls up later that afternoon in just a couple of hours agreeing to meet them at 3 15 p.m. Becky Patty, Libby's grandma, is there a more Midwest small town grandmotherly name than Becky Patty by the way? She had no problem with the girls going out to the bridge. Lots of kids in the area, they did it all the time. She said the girls went out to mess around in that area quote every so often. Apparently sometimes when the girls got bored Becky Patty said they would like to do little photo shoots outside. And she didn't mind them going to play around in the woods near town because she thought it was better than them just staying inside all day and playing video games. I get that Becky
Starting point is 00:21:21 Patty. Before she left Livby walked into her grandmother's home or home office to say goodbye. Becky Patty told her to grab a jacket, which sounds like something a Becky Patty would say. It was sunny but still cold that day with a high of 45 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 34. The last thing Libby said to her grandma when she didn't grab a jacket was, Grandma I'll be okay. Libby Sister Kelsey recalled that as she drove the girls to High Bridge Trail, they were singing in the car, having a great time.
Starting point is 00:21:49 She dropped them off, reminded them to grab their sweatshirts, told Libby that she loved her, and then watched them walk off into the woods together. And that was the last time she would see them alive. The girls' final movements were documented with Libby's via, Libby's cell phone activity. They quickly left the paved trail and walked out onto that old bridge. At 2 o' 5 p.m. Libby posted a
Starting point is 00:22:10 photo of High Bridge on Snapchat. Just two minutes later at 2 o' 7 p.m. she posted another photo this time of Abby walking across the bridge. Erica Gibson, one of the girl's friends, said in an interview for a two-part 2022 docu-series about the murders called Down the Hill that it might have been Abby's first time walking out on the bridge. As mentioned, Libby's father Derek was supposed to pick the girls up that afternoon at 3.15, just over an hour after Libby's final Snapchat photo. He arrived at Monon High Bridge trail on time, didn't see the girls immediately.
Starting point is 00:22:42 When he couldn't get into contact with Libby and wasn't seeing them near the trailhead he walked down the trail to look for him. At 3 30 p.m. he called Libby's grandmother Becky Patty and told her I'm here at the trails have you heard from Libby? She of course had not. Becky Patty now tried calling her granddaughter but of course she didn't answer. By 4 15 p.m. according to Kelsey, she was kind of freaking out. Kelsey also said that that was somewhat normal for Becky Patty who could be a bit of a worrier. Kelsey was not worried at this moment. She told her grandma she would pull off work early, head down to the trail, start searching for her sister and Abby along with her boyfriend. When Abby's mother Anna Williams was told
Starting point is 00:23:20 Libby's family could not get a hold of her, it doesn't sound like Abby had a cell phone, She said, I wasn't super worried. It just didn't seem like too big of a deal right to begin with. I mean, they were probably off visiting with friends and lost track of time. And you just don't worry about it when you're here. It's a small town. Again, prior to these murders,
Starting point is 00:23:38 really bad shit like this literally never happened in Delphi. Ever. Neither girl had a good sense of direction and assumed they probably just got lost. She said the idea that it could be anything but that just didn't make sense. Meanwhile, Kelsey and her boyfriend Cody crossed the bridge, started looking in the woods beyond,
Starting point is 00:23:56 but they couldn't find a trace of the girls anywhere. Now they started to worry that something was actually wrong. Kelsey called her mother, Carrie, who was 250 miles away in Lexington, Kentucky, and Carrie was immediately concerned. She knew Livy would not run away because she would have never wanted her family to worry about her like that.
Starting point is 00:24:12 They also knew the girls wouldn't be at a party or hanging out with boys, they just weren't quite there yet. As the sun started to set around 5.20 p.m., the families made the decision to call the police and report the girls missing. When making the report, Becky Patty mentioned that Livy was afraid of the dark and would not stay out in the woods unless something had gone seriously wrong. And the police, to their credit, took the call very seriously and they got
Starting point is 00:24:34 right on it. No need to wait 24 hours to start looking for the girls in this case. It's not like you know when people are living in a big city. A big benefit of a small town police department, in my opinion, is that they probably know you and compared to law enforcement in the city they don't typically have as much to do. Not as many pressing things. So they jumped on a manhunt immediately and the local volunteer fire department also did assisting in the search effort. Firefighters started going door to door to ask if anyone had seen the girls. And before long, hundreds of people in town stopped whatever they were doing to join the
Starting point is 00:25:08 search. Another benefit of small town life, a much tighter sense of community than anything I've at least ever experienced in a city. If a kid would have went missing in Riggins, Idaho when I was growing up there, literally most of the town, I am convinced, like with certainty, most of the town will be out looking for them within hours. Maybe within the hour, you know, if people were really concerned. Businesses would have shut down, the school would have closed for the day, would have been all hands on deck. Becky Patty later recalled,
Starting point is 00:25:36 It was amazing to see how many people at the drop of a hat dropped everything that they were doing and came out and searched. There were flashlights everywhere, everywhere. It was just like the stars in the sky, you know? Well, the outcome of this search will be horrific. The search itself was beautiful. Carroll County Sheriff at the time, Toby Lesenby, initially felt confident that they would find the girls unharmed, but then that opinion changed after nightfall. Now he felt in his gut that something was different about this case something was wrong very wrong The official search was called off for the night around 1 30 a.m. But how cool is this a whole bunch of volunteers? just kept looking they decided to literally stay up the entire night and Continued searching on their own they were not comfortable going to bed not knowing where these girls were
Starting point is 00:26:25 As a night wore on the the girls' families began to fear that the girls were gonna develop hypothermia. The temperature, as I mentioned, was dipping to just a few degrees above freezing. Couple hours after the search officially ended, at around four in the morning, Valentine's Day, I should say ended for the night, February 14th, Sheriff Toby received word that a cell tower
Starting point is 00:26:42 had picked up a fresh signal from one of the girls phones Were they still alive and now only a few hours after the search had been called off for the night Les and B asked his men and the volunteer firefighters to come back out and start looking again The ping was coming from the Monon High Bridge area a few firefighters now searched that area a second time But they couldn't find that cell phone or the girls. Not right away. Before I share what some volunteer will find, time for this week's first of two mid-show sponsor breaks. If you don't want to hear these ads, if you want to help us with donations each month, sign up on patreon to be a space lizard and get the entire catalog ad free and more. And now let's return to our
Starting point is 00:27:23 timeline when some volunteer finds the bodies of the two missing girls from Delphi, Indiana on February 14th, 2017. Hundreds were out looking again the morning of the 14th, Valentine's Day, just after sunrise. After around six hours of more intense searching at 12.15 p.m. The girls bodies are found in a wooded area along the north bank of Deer Creek about a quarter of a mile from High Bridge. Investigators were initially tight-lipped about the details. They actually wouldn't release many details at all for years to protect their investigation but they did say that the girls had been murdered and locals of course were shocked. The girls have been found on a 40 acre lot owned by a local man named Ron Logan. A local volunteer had found them by using
Starting point is 00:28:09 the camera on his cell phone to zoom in on an area down along the creek. Meanwhile Libby's mom Carrie Timmons had almost made it to Delphi to join the search effort when she received a call from her ex-husband Derek who said they had found the girls and just for a moment, a brief wonderful moment, she was relieved. But then when she heard silence on the other end of the phone, she knew before Derek even said anything else that her daughter was gone. My God, what a terrible, painful life moment. A local pastor broke the news to Abby's mother, Anna Williams.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Immediately after the tragedy was announced, Ron Logan allowed reporters onto his property. Logan told a reporter for the Indianapolis news station WXIN, I'm gonna take you down here and show you everything on how they could have got here. They were going to be just as confused as I was as to how did these two little girls got here from the High Bridge with all this rough terrain without somebody making them come here. He thought it would be extremely difficult for the girls to have hiked into the area saying, the High Bridge is right across the creek here and it runs all the way down across the creek and the land joins together The spot where they joined together is the last area where they were photographs of the girls
Starting point is 00:29:14 They would have had to come over through this territory. Not an easy trip On February 15 2017 the day after the girls bodies were found two days after they had gone missing law enforcement officially confirms with the town already knew, that the two bodies in the woods were Libby German and Abby Williams. That same day, the ISP, the Indiana State Police, also released an obscure image of some man walking on a high bridge, virtually impossible to make out who he was, other than a white guy who appears to be middle-aged. They did not reveal where the image came from at that time,
Starting point is 00:29:45 and many assumed incorrectly. It was a still image captured from a trail camera. ISP Superintendent Doug Carter, who was leading the press conference, emphasized that the man was a person of interest, and they were just seeking him for questioning. For years, this man will be known simply as Bridge Guy. The residents of Delphi were, of course, devastated and afraid. No one wanted to believe the girls had been murdered.
Starting point is 00:30:09 No one wanted to accept that the killer was still on the loose, very possibly still in the area, maybe even in town. A week later, on February 22, 2017, the Indiana State Police held another press conference and revealed that the photo of Bridge Guy had been recovered from Libby's phone, which had been found in the woods. She had captured the image of the man believed to be her killer. The ISP also released a segment of audio where you can just make out a chilling male voice saying, Down the hill. It was believed that the girls had been confronted by the man on the far side of the bridge where a hill leads to a shallow
Starting point is 00:30:41 section of the creek. There are bodies to be found in that area. Kelsey German said about the video, I was really proud of my sister, that she was able to know that something was going to happen. It just reminded me how great the girls were. It was comforting to know that we had the evidence and that this was going to lead us to the answers we needed. But while the police had just released some shocking and promising evidence, there were still so many questions. The families wanted to know if there was any additional audio or video the police were holding on to. The police also had not revealed the girl's cause of death. It would actually be a long time before they would do that.
Starting point is 00:31:15 They just didn't want the killer if they were able to catch him to be able to claim that he knew important details because he'd read about him in the paper or you know heard about them on a podcast whatever. After the second press conference every middle-aged man in Carroll County became a suspect. For example Libby's cousin Mercedes Moody recalled to the police question her husband and asked him about a list of his associates. Sheriff Toby was mentioned three separate times on the tip line. He too was questioned by investigators. We're going the FBI. Meanwhile Lib, Libby's grandparents, Mike and Becky Patty, launched a media campaign and mailed flyers with the Bridgeman's somewhat blurry image to sheriff's offices all over the country. They also had teams of people distributing the flyers around nearby towns and cities. Tips will roll in, but none of them will lead anywhere.
Starting point is 00:32:01 Months will go by with no movement on this case at all. Then on July 17th, 2017, five months after the girls were murdered, the police released the first composite sketch of what Bridge Guy might look like. And insanely, it looked exactly like Dick Bruiser, right up to his championship belt, cape, and tall leather lace-up boots. Did the fucking Bruiser do it? Doubtful. He died 25 years before the murders. The sketch of course did not look like a professional
Starting point is 00:32:28 wrestler. The AP reported that a witness thought they saw a bridge guy on February 13th, but they just recently only met with the FBI sketch artist. State Police Sergeant Kim Riley said fear might have played a role in the witnesses decision to hold off for a little while to not come forward. Authorities would not discuss where the witness saw Bridge Guy, who was still considered a suspect. The sketch depicted a white man with a prominent nose and goatee wearing a cap and a hooded sweater.
Starting point is 00:32:52 He had reddish-brown hair, was between 5'6 and 5'10, weighed between 180 and 220 pounds. The witness got close enough to him to say that he did not have blue eyes, but they were uncertain of the exact eye color. Just like the image of the exact eye color. Just like the image of the suspect taken from the video on Libby's phone though, and the sketch looked like it could be a lot of different people and it did not lead to any arrests. More months go by.
Starting point is 00:33:15 There's still no movement in this case. And then those months turn into a year. And then that year turns into two and still more more time passes. And no one is arrested. No one's even being looked at seriously as a suspect. The Delphi murders case is now at risk of going completely cold. But then in April of 2019, 26 months after the murders, the Indiana State Police announced an upcoming press conference and invited the public to attend. It was held on April 22, 2019. Everyone who attended had to
Starting point is 00:33:46 sign in, provide their name and address, which many found unusual. Was this really a press conference or a sneaky way to get a list of names investigators felt would include the murderer? A little bit of both. Indian State Police Superintendent Doug Carter released new important pieces of evidence now in hopes of someone coming forward with some answers. First the ISP released a new extended version of the Down the Hill audio clip. The updated version was cleaned up, enhanced as much as technology would allow, and featured the same male voice saying, guys, down the hill. Then the ISP released a short clip of Bridge Guy walking on a high bridge towards Libby and Abbey. This was the clip that had the original still image of Bridge Guy that had been taken from but he just shows up for just a brief moment. Authorities emphasized
Starting point is 00:34:28 that he was not walking naturally because of the deteriorating conditions of the bridge but still they hope somebody would still recognize him based on his gait based on how he moved. Then Superintendent Carter unveiled a new composite sketch and announced that the sketch from July 2017 would now be considered secondary. They believe this new sketch depicted the person responsible for the murders more clearly. Superintendent Carter said that the new sketch was based on new info and new intelligence. The reveal of the new sketch was pretty shocking because it showed a much younger looking suspect. A young white man between 18 and 40, quite the age range.
Starting point is 00:35:02 They said it was someone who could appear younger than his true age. Once again, this sketch will look a little bit like too many people, so it will not really help. Basically, it's just a white guy who's not too old. And Carroll County, full of almost nothing but white people. Literally 92.2% white as of the 2020 census. Next biggest group is Hispanic. A lot of people who identify as Hispanic also can look white. Next biggest ethnic group out for Hispanic is black represented only 0.6% of the population. So the dozen young to middle-aged black men in the county are off the hook
Starting point is 00:35:41 except for fucking Kenny. Kenny's very light skinned. Almost every other young to middle-aged man is a suspect, including Pedro, whose Hispanic skin only gets darker in the summer when he gets outside more. Seriously, this second sketch doesn't move the needle at all. They might as well have drawn a portrait of Dick Bruiser. Some new information, other information was helpful though, and scary. Superintendent Carter expressed investigators' shared belief that the suspect was almost certainly from Delphi. That he was either still living there currently, working there currently, or at the very least visiting regularly.
Starting point is 00:36:15 Carter said, quote, directly to the killer who may be in this room. We believe you are hiding in plain sight. We are confident that you have told someone what you have done, or at the very least they know, because of how different you are since the murders. To the murderer, I believe you have just a little bit of conscience left. We will not stop." The police also requested help in determining the identity of a motorist who had parked their vehicle along a county road in Delphi near the Hoosier-Hartland Highway between noon and 5 p.m. February 13th.
Starting point is 00:36:46 After the press conference the families of the victims were devastated all over again. They put a fucking ton of effort into spreading awareness of that original composite sketch. Now they felt like they were back to square one. But Becky Patty soon found an image posted by someone who had overlaid the two sketches and that helped to realize they weren't that different. The primary facial features pretty similar. The second suspect was just a little younger with no beard.
Starting point is 00:37:12 Many other people in town, especially parents and grandparents left this meeting more scared than before. If the killer was from and was still in town, at least some of the time, would they strike again and win? Sadly, again, this new info would lead to zero developments in this case. The families of Abby Williams and Libby German would continue to wonder who had hurt the girls, and why, and also what exactly had happened to them. They still didn't know, and they would continue, I imagine, to view many of the people around them,
Starting point is 00:37:41 some people who they had known for their entire lives, with intense suspicion. Man, there were some girls in riggins. I'd gone missing when I was growing up. And then those girls turned up murdered. And the police thought the killer was local. Holy shit. Everyone would immediately have a short list of suspects. Fucking Alan did this!
Starting point is 00:37:58 I know it! He's always been creepy. You know he has! He makes too much eye contact. He has a weird handshake. He fucking did it. People all over town would be building cases in their minds left and right on little to You know he has! He makes too much eye contact. He has a weird handshake. He fucking did it. People all over town will be building cases in their minds left and right on little to no evidence.
Starting point is 00:38:10 They'd be reading suspicious, you know, suspicious intentions and suspicion just in general into all kinds of shit. A situation like that could truly implode a small town, turning everyone against each other. People would be getting in screaming matches at the grocery store, getting into fights and bars. All sorts of horrible shit would be said about all sorts of people and wounds would be left that would take a long, long time to heal if they would ever heal. Two and a half more years will go by until there's another update in the case of the Delphi murder. So for another two and a half years, people just stew, just looking at each other with suspicion. On December 6, 2021, four years and 10 months after the girls were killed,
Starting point is 00:38:45 the Indiana State Police released additional information about the investigation and asked the public for tips about an individual linked to a social media account who had communicated with Libby German just before she was murdered. Interestingly, the individual connected to this account was already in police custody, but just not for murder. They were in for bruising 17 dicks in a six month period. Sorry, it's very hard to get my mind fully away from dick bruiser. The real person in custody was someone who had been locked, excuse me, had been looked at as a suspect,
Starting point is 00:39:16 at least on some level, since a few weeks following the murders. Over four years earlier, on February 25th, 2017, the ISP and FBI had executed a search warrant linked to the username Anthony underscore shots. The Anthony underscore shots account was active from 2016 to 2017 on Snapchat, Instagram, and possibly on other social media sites. The account quote, used images of a known male model and portrayed himself as being extremely wealthy and owning
Starting point is 00:39:45 numerous sports cars. The creator of the fictitious profile used this information while communicating with juvenile females to solicit nude images, obtain their addresses, and attempt to meet them. Creepy. The investigation led the police to nearby Miami County, Indiana. They identified Anthony underscore shots as now 27 year old Keegan Anthony Klein, so 23 at the time of the murders. And when questioned, he admitted he used his social media accounts to contact underage girls. Some he knew, some he didn't.
Starting point is 00:40:16 He said he found girls on Instagram, then he would talk to them via Snapchat. Klein exchanged messages with over a dozen underage girls in the area had received pictures from many of them He claimed he had received around a hundred pictures from underage girls in total that were sexual and natural sexual in nature and around 20 sexually explicit videos and This dude if you look up his mugshot, holy shit He looks more like an actor playing a pedophile than a real-life pedophile. And what I mean by that is he looks too creepy. Like, like too much. Like a stereotypical description of a pedo. Super fucking greasy,
Starting point is 00:40:52 uncombed hair. Very chubby face with dead eyes. Very patchy, ungroomed beard with greasy skin. Bunch of acne. Big underbite. Literally looks like the guy you would assume just beats off in his mom's basement about a dozen times a day. Showers maybe twice a month. Lives mostly on Tater Tots, Funyuns, Little Debbies, two liter bottles of Orange Crush. Dude who gets fucking lit up on Fortnite
Starting point is 00:41:16 by 12 year olds online towards his headset on the floor several times a day. Someone who refuses to look for a job because he thinks it's gonna get in the way of his career as a professional gamer, even though he's not good at literally any games. The guy who fills online comment sections with a lot of misspelled hate and overly capitalized misogyny, who's been banned from several incel forums for being too much of a loser. Klein had communicated with Libby German in the weeks before
Starting point is 00:41:38 she was killed. He was first questioned on August 18th, 2020 about the Delphi murders by a state trooper and sheriff's deputy and was confronted with the fact that detectives knew he was communicating with Libby and her friends the night before she disappeared at the sleepover. Here's an excerpt from the transcript of that questioning. The Indianapolis news station WXIN published a transcript of part of Klein's interview. Police. You had told investigators, and I know you say you don't remember a girl that you ever, um, and I know you say you don't remember a girl that you ever talked to, but I know you remember Liberty German, and then Klein's response,
Starting point is 00:42:12 inaudible. Again, he is cartoonishly creepy. Uh, hey bud, we know you talked to that girl who was murdered right before she died. Uh, what's going on there? I was, I was, I was trying to train. My mom said I had to be inside early in the night. Aha. OK, back to the transcript.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Police. Right. Followed his inaudible fucking mumble. Right, and you know you talked to her and you admitted to talking to her. And then Klein says, I don't think I ever did, though. I think I talked to one of her friends like I told him. And then it just devolves into mumbling.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Uh, I just tried to talk to him and my mom's bus my balls, you know, trying to be off, you know, you can't use the lotion runs out. Sometimes your hands get dry and you know, your balls sore. Uh, please. You admitted you talked to her Klein. Once again, inaudible mumbling. I was, you know, I talked to a lot of people, I was talking to people, and somebody was talking to people, and they were like, your boobs, and you know, you just look at them,
Starting point is 00:43:11 you just wish they had dirty thoughts, and you're just kind of jerking and jerking, and you know, and you come, and mom gets mad because of your sheet smell. Police. For a few hours in a sleepover, and then you blocked her because she was annoying. You remember? Now he actually said something fucking coherent. Klein says, you're right, she was annoying. You remember? Now he actually says something fucking coherent. Klein says, you're right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Police. You remember that? Klein. Yeah. In another section of the transcript, the state trooper told Klein that the account holder was supposed to meet Libby on the high bridge the day she died. Klein responded. See, I don't remember ever saying to meet up with me though.
Starting point is 00:43:43 Earlier, the trooper quoted Klein's message to another person after he learned about the murder. User Anthony underscore shots wrote, Yeah, we were supposed to meet but you never showed up. And then Klein got a little heated said that's a damn lie. The police then told Klein he failed a polygraph test when asked if he knew who killed the girls. He also deleted his phone search history between February 10th and February 15th, 2017. Little bit creepy. Klein claimed he did that because his father was quote,
Starting point is 00:44:10 freaking out when he told him in February of 2017 that he was a suspect in the murder case. Klein also said he did not exchange photos with Libby German, but a friend of hers who was at the sleepover sent photos to him. This is fucking dirtbag. Investigators said they believe Livy was being groomed by the account holder. The transcript states, unfortunately she was completely enthralled with Anthony Schatz. The police also believed at least two people had access to the account based on a forensic investigation into the wording used by Anthony underscore Schatz.
Starting point is 00:44:38 Klein said he gave his password to a lot of people. Did he? Or is he just trying to look less like a murder suspect here? The transcript of Klein's police interview was accidentally leaked to the press in March of 2022. Libby's grandma slash guardian Becky Patty, fucking love Becky Patty, said about learning Libby had communicated with him, quote, it was a real shock because then I had to face the fact that I didn't monitor her phone or her social media enough. This is not your fucking fault, Becky Patty. that I didn't monitor her phone or her social media enough. This is not your fucking fault, Becky Patty. In an interview with HLN producer Barbara McDonald, Klein said his father had access to the account. He also claimed that the Indiana State Police told him quote,
Starting point is 00:45:12 they knew it was my dad that killed the girls. What a fucking family. Family fucking champions, man. McDonald asked, do you think you're going to be charged with anything related to Abby and Libby's murder? Klein said no. McDonald asked if he thought they were're going to be charged with anything related to Abbey and Libby's murder? Klein said no. McDonald asked if he thought they were trying to get him to pin the murder on his dad and Klein said yes. He added, because when I first got arrested, they told me that they knew it was my dad and if I tell them all my charges will be dropped.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Klein claimed his dad was abusive, once pointed guns at him and his mom. Said his dad had domestic violence cases filed against him and a history of violence towards multiple women. Also said his dad preferred young women and once claimed he slept with a 17 year old girl. Sounds like if he thought his dad had done it he probably would have pointed the police towards him, but he didn't. Also pretty bummed that he didn't continue to mumble that interview. I mean my dad's you know my fucking dad's son shit about his whole blog and goes me and my dad you know he's fucking he's creep I'm'm creep and that's how fucking creeps work and sometimes just full full fucking creeps you jerk off August of 2020 old fucking mumbles McGee
Starting point is 00:46:13 Was charged with 30 felonies including possession of a shit ton of child pornography child exploitation obstruction of justice child solicitation and synthetic identity deception March 30th 2023 2023, he will plead guilty, probably almost inaudibly, to child exploitation charges and on July 27th of that year his greasy dead-eyed ass will be sentenced to 40 years in prison where he's probably fucking mumbling right now. I don't know why you gotta fuck my butt, why you gotta fuck my butt, why you fucking home butt, you know I'm fucking your butt sometimes, you can just dig in my butt. Let's now shift focus.
Starting point is 00:46:49 Back to the main timeline of the Delphi murders investigation and jump back in during the spring of 2022. It's been over five long years now since the murders. In May of 2022, the Murder Sheet podcast, hosted by former insider reporter Anya Kane and Indianapolis attorney Kevin Greenlee obtained and shared court documents indicating an FBI agent believed there was probable cause to search the home of Ron Logan. That due to own the land where the girls bodies were found. Girls were found only 1400 feet from his house.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Turns out authorities had searched his property back on March 17th, 2017. The warrant issued for searching Ron's place revealed some additional details about the case to the public, including that the audio recorded of the man saying, guys, down the hill was 43 seconds long in total. Also, investigators revealed that they had found a large amount of blood at the scene, leading them to believe the perpetrator would have almost certainly gotten blood, and probably a lot of it, on their hands and or clothing. They thought the individual may have also taken a souvenir from the crime scene and may have also
Starting point is 00:47:49 moved and staged the bodies. The warrant did not specify what was missing but noted the quote rest of their clothing was recovered. Investigators had also recovered unknown fibers and unidentified hairs from the scene. The FBI agent who thought Ron Logan might have killed the girls also believed Logan's build matched that of Bridge Guy and his voice was not inconsistent with the recording. And two women who were interviewed about Ron Logan said he had been violent with them in the past. One woman said she was frightened of him. Both women thought he was the man in the video.
Starting point is 00:48:19 That's noteworthy. Logan also owned numerous weapons, which the police knew about because they searched his home as part of an investigation into a probation violation. Police also learned that Logan drove a truck to the transfer station in Delphi to drop off trash on February 13th around the time the girls went missing. This admission initiated the investigation of the probation violation because he was prohibited from driving. Finally investigators also said Logan lied about his alibi so did he do it? Well Logan had told police a friend had picked him up
Starting point is 00:48:48 on February 13th between 2 and 2 30 p.m. to take him to an aquarium store in Lafayette. He then contacted a family member on the morning of the 14th instructed them to tell the police about this trip. He asked the family member to say that they returned home between 5 and 5 30 p.m. on the 13th It appeared Logan asked his family member to lie before any crime had even been discovered and that of course makes him look real guilty during the March 6 2017 probation violation search Investigators did find a receipt from the store dated February 13th with a checkout time of 5 21 p.m It would take Logan 30 minutes to get to the store from his home which put his return timeline somewhat in doubt. The man Logan said drove him confirmed the trip with an investigator on March 7th but then on March 9th spoke
Starting point is 00:49:32 to a different investigator and admitted no he didn't he lied. Why did he lie? Because Logan had asked him to lie and he found that concerning because Logan had never asked him to lie in the past, making him look all that guiltier. Cell phone data showed Logan's phone was in Delphi near the High Bridge Trail the afternoon of February 13th. A text he sent at 7.56pm on the 13th indicated his phone was likely outside his residence very near the murder scene. So he looks like the guy, right?
Starting point is 00:50:01 Unfortunately, there was no way he was going to be arrested now because he was dead. Logan died in January 2020 of COVID. Also, dude was 77 years old when the girls were killed. So, probably not the guy a little outside the age range of the person the witnesses saw. Five months after the Murder Sheep podcast revelation on October 28th, 2022, multiple sources now tell local station WXIN in Indianapolis that a different man has been booked at the Carroll County Jail in connection with the Delphi homicide investigation. The first guy actually detained in this case. 50-year-old Richard M. Allen, a Delphi local and another dick interestingly, have been arrested two days earlier on October 26th. WXIN reported that Allen had been moved to a state facility for his own safety. Neighbors saw the police searching Allen's home two and a half weeks before the arrest
Starting point is 00:50:55 on October 13th. The deputy arrived, showed Allen a piece of paper before a search in the yard. His SUV was towed. Officers left his house with bundles of clothes, clothing, or cloth, a stack of books, a shopping bag, a shoebox. They'd also dug up two small areas near his shed in his yard and appeared to be using a metal detector to scan other areas of his yard. One neighbor asked the deputy whether he should be worried and the deputy replied, just remain vigilant, especially with your wife and daughters. That's something a wee bit concerning to hear. Three days after WXIN learned that a man had been booked in the Carroll County Jail in connection with the Delphi homicide investigation. On Halloween, October 31, 2022, Richard Allen is officially charged with two counts of murder.
Starting point is 00:51:41 He pleads not guilty and he'll remain at the White County Jail without bond. Authorities emphasized that the investigation was still not complete and they encouraged people to continue submitting tips. Libby's grandmother Becky Patty and her aunt Tara German spoke to the media about the arrest. Becky Patty said she didn't know Alan but Tara was a regular at the local CVS where he worked and she recognized Alan from shopping there. She said quote, I went into the store to print photos of Libby for the funeral and he was the one who helped me. I was a mess trying to get the images off my phone. Once they were printed he looked at me and said I'm not gonna charge you for this. Towards the back of the Delphi CVS store near the
Starting point is 00:52:19 pharmacy counter there was a wanted poster featuring the image of Bridge Guy front and center and it would stay up for years. Richard Allen most likely saw it every time he came to work. On November 22nd, 2022, this dick was granted the bail hearing, and interestingly the prosecutor said in court that Allen might not be the sole suspect. A week later, on November 29th, the judge released a redacted version of the probable cause affidavit. A week later, on November 29th, the judge released a redacted version of the probable cause affidavit. Allen was linked to the case thanks to investigators finding an unspent.40 caliber bullet less than two feet from one of the girl's bodies.
Starting point is 00:52:51 Not shell, not casing, the whole fucking bullet. During Allen's second interview on October 13th, 2022, he disclosed he had a firearm at his home, multiple firearms, but he also had one of them was a.40 caliber Sig Sauer pistol which he had purchased in 2001 The gun was collected during the search and then lab analysis confirmed that the bullet from the crime scene was cycled through that firearm Allen said that no one else had used his gun and then he couldn't explain why a bullet cycle through his gun would end Up at the crime scene Affidavit also revealed new details about the video shows Libby recording the trail before turning the camera to Abby.
Starting point is 00:53:26 The bridge guy comes into view. Libby tells Abby, the trail ends here. We have to go down. As he approached, one of the girls could then be heard mentioning the word gun. And then the man said, guys, down the hill. The video ends with the girls walking down the hill. By now you might be wondering if Alan had remained in Delphi this whole time for over five years how the hell had the police not zeroed in on him way earlier.
Starting point is 00:53:50 Well he'd been overlooked due to a simple clerical error. Investigators had actually first spoke to Allen back in 2017 shortly after the murders. He had admitted that he had been on the Monon High Bridge and also on the nearby Freedom Bridge between 1.30 3 30 p.m The day of the murders which lined up fucking perfectly with the window of time in which the girls were murdered Allen said he was on another bridge most likely Freedom Bridge when he had seen three girls walking in the area Those girls have been found by authorities and they told the police they remember passing a man who they thought was quote kind of creepy One of them they tried to say they said there were one of them said they tried to say this guy hi
Starting point is 00:54:29 But he didn't respond and quote glared at them And then another woman told the police she saw a muddy and bloody man walking west on a county road not far from the bridges Just before 4 p.m. He appeared to have quote gotten into a fight Was that woman were those girls were they talking about Richard Allen? I think they were. A lot of the local news sources on this case, they're not the best so none of them confirmed if they thought, like if they were shown a picture of Richard Allen, be like yep that's the guy. One source shared that no witnesses recalled seeing Richard Allen on the trail after 2 13 p.m. when the video of Bridge Guy was taken though. Why was the investigation focused on Allen after his initial admissions?
Starting point is 00:55:08 Well a civilian FBI employee either mislabeled or misfiled info collected on Allen and then that info does not show up in the correct spot during future data searches and just gets lost according to a source that spoke to WXIN. How does that happen in an investigation this important? Human fucking error. It can strike at any time in any situation. Richard Allen's information sat in a box with thousands of other names for over five years until it finally caught a volunteer's attention. In September of 2022, volunteer receptionist Kathy Schenck, pretty cool name, filed a new tip in an online database, came across the earlier info on Allen. She realized the importance of the time Allen said he was
Starting point is 00:55:48 on the trail, so she submitted the tip to the detective in charge of the case now and that detective revived the investigation into him. New Carroll County Sheriff Tony LeGette said that Allen quote, got lost in the cracks. Before we move on to the next date in our timeline, time to take today's second of two mid-show sponsor breaks. Thanks for listening to all our sponsors. I don't know why that was hard for me to say. And now let's return to December of 2022. In December of 2022, a gag order was issued to prevent those involved in the case from speaking about it. Then on April 6, 2023, Allen's legal
Starting point is 00:56:23 team follows an emergency motion to modify his safekeeping order, claiming Allen was not being treated like other detainees. On June 13, Allen's defense team files a motion to suppress certain ballistic evidence now. On June 15, Allen comes to court for a bail hearing and the judge, Francis aka Fran Gull, then hears arguments over several issues. Prosecutors informed her that Allen had confessed five or six times, but his attorneys said those confessions could not be trusted due to his mental state. The exact nature of his mental state not disclosed at this time.
Starting point is 00:56:57 Dude was able to keep his shit together well enough to be working at CVS right up until his arrest. How bad could it have been? Allen's attorneys also asked for him to be moved from prison to a county jail due to a decline in his physical and mental health, but that request is denied. Next date, June 16th, 2023, the defense claims that Allen's mental and physical state is worsening in isolation. Oh, fuck, of course it is. Of course his mental and physical state is worsening. Dude's been arrested for killing and doing god knows what else to two little girls.
Starting point is 00:57:27 Everyone in prison, I imagine, despises him. People back in the little town he's from want him fucking dead. Who's mental and physical state is not going to decline in that situation? Isolation or not? June 29th, Allen County Special Judge Francis Gull unseals 118 case documents because counsel agreed quote, that the public interest is best served by transparency. These records revealed that investigators believed a knife was the murder weapon, stating autopsies of the girls ruled their deaths as homicides,
Starting point is 00:57:55 and their wounds were caused by a sharp object. Most details regarding the girls' deaths still not made public, though. Allen told authorities he had guns and knives, admitted he owned similar clothing to Bridge Guy. The documents also stated that Allen allegedly told his wife and mother not made public, though. Allen told authorities he had guns and knives, admitted he owned similar clothing, two-bridge guy. The documents also stated that Allen allegedly told his wife and mother no less than five times that he was a killer. During an April 3rd phone call, Allen allegedly told his wife Kathy several times that he killed the girls, and Kathy ended this call abruptly.
Starting point is 00:58:18 In a separate document, Allen's attorneys argued that around the time the call was made, Allen, quote, appeared to be suffering from various psychotic symptoms which counsel would describe as schizophrenic and delusional. Alan experienced memory loss and an overall inability to communicate rationally with counsel and family members. This was apparently much different than his usual behavior and mental state. The documents provided more information about the crime scene including the fact that a pair of underwear and a sock belonging to the girls were missing from the spot where the bodies had been found.
Starting point is 00:58:48 Libby's phone was found underneath her body. On September 18, 2023, Allen's defense attorneys Andrew Baldwin and Bradley Rossi filed a motion discussing the alternative theory that the murders were part of an occult ritual. When all else fails, throw a satanic panic hail Mary, I guess. Prosecutors called their claims unfounded with absolutely no proof, but the defense pointed out that the investigators spoke with key suspects, whom they believed were at the center of this theory. The defense's 136 page motion opened with, quote, members of a pagan Norse religion called Odinism,
Starting point is 00:59:26 hijacked by white nationalists, ritualistically sacrificed Abigail Williams and Liberty German. And I would say, get the fuck out of here. But also, that's a fantastically entertaining theory. The Anti-Defamation League defines Odinism as a term frequently given to a racist variant of the Norse pagan religion known as Alsatru. Alsatru is a religious sect that attempts to revive ancient
Starting point is 00:59:52 Norse religious beliefs and practices of pre-Christian Europe. Alsatru, and I know I'm not quite inflecting my tongue right, I'm not going to try and say it like somebody from Iceland would, is not in and of itself a racist religion, though some white supremacists consider themselves altruists. Odinism is sometimes referred to as Wotanism, tends to be popular among white supremacist inmates. Odinism combines white supremacist beliefs with neo-paganism, followers worship the Norse god Odin, or at least fucking think they do, many elements of Norse culture and belief used in Odinism also used by the Nazis. Odinism was concerned even in the late 90s with when also true leaders opened more prison ministries. The Southern Poverty Law Center
Starting point is 01:00:34 reported that many of their followers were incarcerated white supremacists. Key leaders had known neo-nazi or anti-semitic backgrounds. According to the SPLC, also true means belief in the gods. It has been officially recognized as a religion in Iceland since 1972. It's a religion that emphasizes magical elements of European polytheism. The religion which revives a pre-Christian pantheon of North gods is appealing to white supremacists because it mythologizes, oh my god, mythologizes, mythologizes? Yeah, I don't know why that word sounds weird to me right now.
Starting point is 01:01:07 It mythologizes the virtues of early Northern European whites seen as wandering barbarians deeply involved in a mythical relationship with nature struggling heroically against the elements. It sings the virtues of tribe or folk strongly emphasizing genetic closeness and it credits whites with building civilization and an ethnic of individual or an ethic or folk strongly emphasizing genetic closeness and it credits whites with building civilization and an ethnic of individual or an ethic of individual responsibility. According to author
Starting point is 01:01:31 Jeffrey Kaplan who wrote the study Radical Religion in America in 1997, an early international promoter of Odinism was Australian Nazi sympathizer Alexander Rude Mills who influenced American Odinist Elsie Christensen, who published the odinist newsletter in the early 70s. Stephen McNallen formed the first also true organization in the US called the also true Free Assembly. In 1978 McAllen said he sympathized with the quote legitimate frustrations of white men who were concerned for their kind, but he tried to lessen the Nazi odinist identification. McAllen will shut down his group by 1987, and there have since been other offshoots
Starting point is 01:02:08 with extremely racist beliefs. Some members have committed violent acts, including murder, but sacrifice of two white girls? Eh, come on. Odinism is considered a reconstructed faith because we have very little evidence of how the ancient Norse actually practiced their religion. The larger Norse neo-pagan community has disavowed groups connected to white supremacist ideology. Referring back to the 136 page motion, the defense alleged investigators failed to turn over
Starting point is 01:02:37 evidence and reports suggesting the crime was part of a ritualistic sacrifice. They alleged investigators consulted with a professor regarding potential Odinism signatures at the crime scene, but this supposed professor was never identified. The defense claimed a parallel investigation by three officers led to some obvious Odinist cult suspects, but those leading the investigation did not follow these leads because of, quote, incompetence or a concerted intentionality. The filing spent almost 60 pages discussing various individuals who were purportedly members
Starting point is 01:03:08 of this cult. Investigators in the Delphi case were allegedly aware of these allegations and a few investigators spent some time looking into a cult connection. According to the defense, investigators hastily dismissed the idea after consulting with an expert. They also cast doubt on the alibis offered by the alleged cult members. At least one of the alleged cult members supposedly knew details about the crime scene that were not public knowledge. Another was the subject of a tip to investigators just two days after the bodies were found.
Starting point is 01:03:34 The individual was allegedly a member of the Vinlanders, which is another term for Odinist followers, and posted social media photos of half-dead women and symbols made out of tree branches. They claimed investigators failed to provide information about Brad Holder, a local odinist whose son was reportedly dating Abby Williams. Brad Holder apparently posted images on social media that mimicked the runes supposedly found at the crime scene. Filings stated the defense believes that the court will be shocked at the number of clues or Easter eggs both before and after the murders that
Starting point is 01:04:08 Holder openly posted on his Facebook page that pointed the finger to his involvement in the murders. The defense claimed the position of Abby's body mirrored a painting titled Odin hanging from World Tree. The defense called the painting evidence of an additional dark demonic component to Odinism. At least if articles concerning Odinism, at least of articles concerning Odinist human sacrifice and imagery found on the internet. The painting shows, quote, a man hanging upside down from a tree who has been sliced to the neck with blood dripping to the ground. This man's arms are posed similarly to Abby's at the crime scene.
Starting point is 01:04:40 This man's legs are also posed similarly to Abby's at the crime scene. His left leg is straight, his right leg is bent at the knee. The only difference is that the man's right leg is placed over the left leg while Abby's right leg is posed under her left leg. The painting appears to be depicting a myth from Norse belief that Odin sacrificed himself on the branches of the World Tree. He stabbed himself and hanged upside down for nine days to obtain the wisdom of the runes. and hanged upside down for nine days to obtain the wisdom of the runes. But Norse paganism does not practice human sacrifice and though some Odinists have murdered people due to their beliefs, those were not ritual sacrifices. An expert told News Nation, the closest thing that you might find among some
Starting point is 01:05:17 Odinists is that there might be some ritual sacrifice of animals like chickens. The filing also stated sticks and tree branches were deliberately, carefully, and proficiently placed on each girl in a certain arrangement, mimicking certain runes. At least one of the branches appeared to have its end cut off cleanly by some type of tool, like an electric saw, providing proof of a preconceived plan. Additionally, the blood of Liberty German was used as the paint to mark a tree with a rune that looks similar to the letter F. With a simple Google search, these runes would be identifiable as one of the many calling
Starting point is 01:05:48 cards of this pagan religious cult. Runes were the alphabet system used by the Vikings. Some runes resemble modern letters. A symbol that looked like the letter F was allegedly painted on a tree in blood at the crime scene, and an F was allegedly made with an arrangement of sticks. The defense argued it appeared to be the rune Ansoos which resembles the letter F. In Norse neo-paganism runes are associated with spiritual and magical significance and the rune Ansoos is associated with Odin. White supremacist groups have used runes to signify their
Starting point is 01:06:23 beliefs but Ansoos not one of the commonly used ones. The defense also alleged that Allen was abused by Westfield guards who were part of this Odinite cult. What the fuck is going on out there in rural Indiana? The Indiana Department of Corrections does recognize Odinism as a religion, despite it previously attempting to ban the group worshiping. You know, group worship by followers in prison. In their motion to have Allen move to a different facility, his attorneys wrote that some prison guards were wearing patches with Odinist symbols. One said in Odin we trust when he got to prison. But when this was looked into later, none of these guards were found to be wearing these patches. Two COs did admit though in affidavits that they did wear patches tied to a pagan religion just not to Odinism. Okay, what the hell is happening? Another
Starting point is 01:07:09 inmate claimed corrupt and ranking officers were called Richard, were calling Richard Allen a child killer, teasing him that he has a visit from his family. Is that really a big deal? I mean, he is in prison because he was charged with killing two kids. Did he expect not to be called a child killer? Not to be teased? I know he hasn't been, you know, tried yet, but if I was charged with something like that, even if I was innocent, I would expect to get some shit. Two guards were almost always by Alan's side with an earshot of conversations involving his attorneys and his wife.
Starting point is 01:07:41 And they were in close proximity to Alan and their alleged ties to Odinism supposedly made it impossible for him to be open with his defense according to his attorneys. These attorneys alleged that during one meeting Alan quote mumbled in a somewhat incoherent fashion that Odinites were threatening him. I do love that another suspect in this case is doing some fucking incoherent mumbling. I mean, I would not say this guy might lose get my defense. No, no, no, sir. Norse guys are after me to white supremacy.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Gonna kill me. They had not discussed autism at that point in the case. I don't buy this cult sacrifice shit for a lot of reasons. You know, they're laying out a lot of pages about this. Here are the three big ones that killed us for me in this case. No one saw a group of weird dudes as in members of a white supremacist fucking Norse cult who engaged in human sacrifice near the bridge close to where Libby and Abby were killed on the day they were killed. And there were plenty
Starting point is 01:08:36 of other people in the area that day. But the bigger reason I don't believe this is that Libby's cell phone was left at the crime scene and left still turned on. Let me get this straight. So these cultists, they're gonna go through all the trouble putting all these fucking signs together in advance of the killings at the site of the killings arranging their fucking sticks writing runes and blood. They do all that. Sacrifice these girls, you know, and not get caught even though it's in a populated area during the day. But they don't think to take Libby's cell phone and smash it. Fucking look through it in a race possible you know evidence against them. Throw it in the river. Something.
Starting point is 01:09:12 Anything. Also why would they sacrifice these girls during the day right next to town around a lot of witnesses? It's fucking stupid theory. This is the kind of bullshit to me that just some defense attorneys pull out of their ass just to try to confuse a jury because they don't actually have a proper defense because they know their client's probably guilty. The defense also attempted to cast doubt on the rationale for granting the search warrant in October of 2022. The defense referenced a key witness as well describing a vehicle that did not resemble
Starting point is 01:09:40 Alan's black Ford Focus in the High Bridge area and the same witness described a man who did not resemble Alan, a white male in his 20s with curly brown hair and a medium build. Allen was 50 at the time with a heavier build. This was the basis for the second composite sketch by the way. The attorneys argued that the presence of Allen's Ford Focus at the trail was in dispute. Allen told police he arrived on the trails around 12 p.m. left around 1 30. Killings likely happened between 1 30 and and 4 meaning Allen would have left already
Starting point is 01:10:08 Witness reported seen a different vehicle the 1995 Ford Comet parked outside the old CPS building near the trail about 2 15 p.m Separate witness saw a man in a tan colored coat not a blue jacket as depicted in the bridge guy image She said he was money The defense wrote there is a reason that in his sworn affidavit, Liggett, the sheriff, concealed key information from Judge Diener and lied about other key information. Had Diener known the hidden and falsified facts, then Diener would have never signed the search warrant, a search warrant that was already insufficient in linking Richard Allen to the murders even before Liggett's lies and deceptions.
Starting point is 01:10:51 On October 5th, 2023, critical evidence, including some crime scene photos, are leaked online and then some YouTubers and podcasters quickly share them. On October 9th, four days later, Mitch Westerman, a friend of defense attorney Andrew Baldwin, called Baldwin admitted to being behind the leak, admitted that he took photos of evidence, shared them with a man who then shared them with an individual in Texas who distributed the photos. What a guy. Westerman had been employed at Baldwin's law firm at one time. They had remained friends for several years.
Starting point is 01:11:17 He no longer worked with Baldwin, but frequently stopped by the office to visit with him. The man Westerman initially shared the photos with fucking killed himself after being questioned by the police in this. My god. October 19th, Judge Fran Gull announced the defense attorneys were voluntarily withdrawing from the case in response to this leak. Right? These idiots fucked up. However, later that month Baldwin and Rossi filed motions with the Indiana Supreme Court arguing they had been removed from the case by Judge Gull in a way that was not kosher. Baldwin and Rossi, they're going to sound like a hot mess by the way. During the October 19th meeting, Gull told the defense her concerns about their overall competence.
Starting point is 01:11:55 She said it dated back to the days after Allen was arrested. She gave examples of their problematic conduct, a press release with information that should have never been revealed, an earlier leak after Baldwin accidentally emailed info to someone who was not even part of the case, and inaccuracies and falsehoods in the attorney's court filings about Allen's prison conditions. Judge Gould said, per the meeting transcript, quote, It pains me to say this, but the totality of these circumstances demonstrates gross negligence and incompetence on the part of the defense team.
Starting point is 01:12:24 I am unsatisfied with your representation of Mr. Allen. I am gravely concerned about his rights to have competent, non-negligent representation." So good. Tate the office for those two attorneys. The judge just essentially told them, you guys are fucking idiots. And the defendant, he deserves fucking better. He deserves people who are not ass clowns. The meeting ended with both attorneys withdrawing.
Starting point is 01:12:48 Rossi claimed they either had to quit or be publicly shamed without a chance to refute the allegations. On October 31st, 2023, Judge Gold pushed the trial back a full year to October of 2024. This meeting, Allen's original defense attorneys insisted on staying on the case at Allen's request despite his new attorneys also being present. Okay November 6, 2023 Baldwin and Rossi's attorneys now asked the Indiana Supreme Court to remove naughty Judge Gull from the case. That'll teach her to make fun of him. Carroll County DA Nicholas McClelland also filed additional murder and kidnapping charges against Allen
Starting point is 01:13:25 that same day. November 22, 2023, 41-year-old Mitchell Westerman, the man behind the evidence leak, is arrested and charged with one count of conversion, which is a misdemeanor. January 12, 2024, Allen's new defense team asked for him to be transferred after he claimed he was being mistreated at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility. That motion is denied. February 8, 2024. On January 18, backing up just a bit, the Indiana Supreme Court reinstated Allen's
Starting point is 01:13:54 original defense team of Baldwin and Rossi, but the justice also denied a motion to remove Judge Gould from the case. These attorneys are now back on a case where the judge has zero respect for them and believes they suck at their jobs. So good luck with that. January 28, 2024, Allen's attorneys file a new motion to remove Judge Gull from the case. For fuck's sake. The very next day, the prosecution urges the court to hold the defense attorneys in contempt for mishandling evidence and making public statements about the case as the court had weighed the gag order.
Starting point is 01:14:24 What's going on in Carroll County? and making public statements about the case as the court had weighed the gag order. What's going on in Carroll County? A week later, February 7th, 2024, the defense called for the murder charges to just be tossed out now, claiming that interviews with key suspects had been deleted, either negligently or intentionally. Judge Gull now told them, quote, No fucking way, clowns. Eat a dick. Get ready to lose this case, douchebags. I'm not sure what she said to them, but she definitely talked about them to her friends and probably used some choice words because they now filed a third attempt to have her
Starting point is 01:14:55 thrown off the case the same day. And that attempt is rejected later the day that it's filed. They're like, get the fuck out of here. Stop. The circus. March 11th, 2024. Judge Goal does grant the defense's request to move up the trial now, blocking off May 13th through the 31st. On March 18th, two counts of kidnapping are dismissed against Allen.
Starting point is 01:15:16 He also waived a hearing to dispute the amended charges that day. The following month, April 25th, 2024, Judge Gold now rules that no cameras will be allowed at trial. A week later, April 30th, prosecutors, Judge Goldnall rules that no cameras will be allowed at trial. A week later, April 30th, prosecutors ask the court to prevent the defense from presenting that dumb shit, Odinism murder theory, at any point in the trial. Like, don't even fucking say the word Odinism! Just a few days later, while the judge continues to think about whether or not she'll let these two attorneys, she has zero respect for, you know, have a defense strategy she believes to be nonsensical about this cult. On May 2nd, she finds the defense to be quote sloppy, negligent, and incompetent, but declines to hold the
Starting point is 01:15:54 attorneys in contempt. Love it. Sloppy, negligent, and incompetent. She hates them. This ruling stemmed from a March 18th hearing where DA Nicholas McClelland filed a motion to hold the defense attorneys in contempt, citing the evidence leak and alleged violations of a gag order. The judge ruled that the prosecutor did not prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the defense team was willful and intentional in their sloppy, stupid actions, and their previous remarks were not violating a gag order. This is so entertaining.
Starting point is 01:16:26 D.A. McClelland, did these attorneys leak important evidence? Yes. Yes, they did, without a doubt, your honor. Okay. But can you prove they did that intentionally? Or did they do it because they are two of the dumbest people I've literally ever dealt with inside or outside of a courtroom. And as any reasonable adult knows, stupid people always be doing some stupid shit.
Starting point is 01:16:50 For no other reason than they be stupid. On May 7th, days before Allen was supposed to go to trial, Judge Gault pushes the trial back to October 14th. Why? I don't know. Maybe to fuck with Andrew Baldwin and Bradley Rossi. Two guys I picture her referring to referring to them as Balls and Cocky now. Andrew Baldwin is Balls. Bradley Rossi is Cocky. June 19th, Balls and Cocky now claim that the Carroll County Sheriff's Office lied
Starting point is 01:17:18 about the circumstances surrounding the transportation of an inmate for June 2023, hearing in the case, and that Judge Gull contradicts the Sheriff's Office report about the issue. But now they want Judge Gull to have to testify as a witness on that matter and she will not. The following month, August 16th, Judge Fran Gull denies another request from Balls and Cocky to have Allen's case just thrown out. August 29th, Gull rules that Allen's multiple reported confessions to killing the girls will be admissible in court. Bollas and Cocky respond by throwing themselves down in the courtroom floor and kicking their legs and beating the floor with their fists while sobbing and screaming things like,
Starting point is 01:17:54 I WANNA! It's not fair! It's not fair! For about 20 minutes. No, they didn't do that. They responded by taking off all their clothes and running around the court trying to keep the bailer from catching them while they held their fingers in their ears and yelled. I know you are but what am I? I don't know what they did September 4th 2024 the defense suffers another major blow when the judge now finally rules against allowing their odinism cult ritual sacrifice defense nonsense at trial saying the defense failed to present admissible evidence regarding third-party suspects and the defense failed to present admissible evidence regarding third-party suspects. And now Balls and Cocky respond by throwing themselves down on the courtroom floor, kicking their legs, beating the floor with their fists, while sobbing and screaming shit like,
Starting point is 01:18:32 Oh Anu! It's not fair! So we said it happened. What really happened was five days later, September 9th, the defense signaled their intention for an interlucutory appeal challenging the decision of the Indiana Court of Appeals to keep Judge Gull in the case, arguing that Gull's decision hamstrung their defense and violated Allen's constitutional rights. The Indiana Court of Appeals responds by telling Balls and Cockie to, quote, go eat a bag of dicks. The whole bag, not just one or two. The court even ruled that they had to open their mouths when they said that they were
Starting point is 01:19:08 done eating that bag of dicks and let a court agent inspect them to make sure they weren't just saying they ate the whole bag of dicks when really they still had a little bit of a dick hidden in their cheeks or maybe under their tongues. And while that of course didn't happen, Judge Gold was yet again not removed from this case. September 11th now, Prosecutor McClelland files an objection to the defense's call And while that of course didn't happen, Judge Gold was yet again not removed from this case. September 11th now, Prosecutor McClelland files an objection to the defense's call for an appeal, citing the potential for another trial delay. Gold denies the defense's request for an appeal and says the trial will proceed as scheduled
Starting point is 01:19:36 in October. On September 23rd, the defense files another motion, seeking to have the jury visit the crime scene and maybe, I don't know, look around for some Odinous cult ruins. The state objects won't happen. September 26, 2024, Carroll County DA Nicholas McGlieland responds to yet another defense memorandum laying out the alternative Odinous theory. They just won't stop calling it quote, a fanciful defense for social media to devour that is not supported by evidence. Balls and cocky.
Starting point is 01:20:07 They're so desperate. They won't let it go. Uh, after an evidence leak, countless legal filings, the removal and reinstatement of the defense team and so many other delays and arguing with the judge, Richard Allen's trial finally starts on October 14th, 2024, 12 jurors and two alternates are selected that same day. Two days later on October 16th, the prosecution files a motion seeking to prohibit the use of the two widely circulated composite sketches.
Starting point is 01:20:32 The judge will later rule them inadmissible. Opening statements began in another two days. October 18, prosecutor Nicholas McGlielin tells the jury that the last thing the girls saw was Richard Allen's face. Then he told him or that he told him girls down the hill and out of fear the girls complied. McLeelan assured the jury that Richard Allen was indeed the infamous and elusive bridge guy that he stalked Libby and Abby that he murdered them. He told them Allen had confessed to details that only the killer would know that he matched the description of the man seen on the bridge mirror minutes before the
Starting point is 01:21:03 murders occurred. Judges or excuse me Jurors would hear Allen's incriminating statements to correction officers, fellow inmates, law enforcement officers, even his own wife. He shared how Allen had planned to have his way with the girls but was interrupted and killed them instead. McClure then revealed that the girls' throats had been cut, that Libby had been found naked and covered in blood, that Abby was dressed in Libby's sweatshirt and jeans indicating she had also been nude. The prosecution further linked Allen to the crime by citing the bullet evidence that a bullet found near the girls came from the gun he owned, a gun he did not allow anyone else to use. The defense sought to cast doubt on the bullet evidence, questioning why investigators didn't
Starting point is 01:21:42 take more images of the cartridge and suggesting the bullet could have come from a law enforcement weapon, except ballistics testing definitively ruled against that. These two dipshits really seem to be desperate again. The defense also raised questions about the absence of DNA evidence linking Allen to the murders. And that part at least is fair. Allen's attorneys argued that witness descriptions
Starting point is 01:22:03 from February 13th, 2017 were inconsistent and suggested Allen only confessed because of a mental health crisis that was still not clearly defined. They pointed out that Allen had provided inaccurate details, such as claiming he had shot the girls in the back when that was not how they died, they had not been shot at all. The defense alleged that the statements handled and lost evidence that the hair found in Abby's hand matched Libby's relatives rather than Alan, but investigators did not realize that for years because they didn't test it. The defense also now proposed another super dumb how are these idiots professional attorneys theory that bridge guy and perhaps some other guys accosted the
Starting point is 01:22:41 girls at the south end of the bridge, forced them into a vehicle, drove them around to someplace for hours, then returned 12 hours later while a huge manhunt is going on in town while the girls are still alive to just kill them near Deer Creek now. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, what? What killer or group of killers after getting away with kidnapping two girls they planned to murder, after driving away from them or driving away with kidnapping two girls they planned to murder after driving away from them or driving away with them, you know, then 12 hours later they drive these two girls back to literally the only place in the country crawling with people looking for said girls where they then risk the still living girls drawing attention to them while they then somehow very quietly kill them in the midst of so many people fucking looking for them then sneak away a second time around a bunch of witnesses. That's as idiotic as suggesting
Starting point is 01:23:30 in a trial centered on a bank robbery that the real bank robbers broke into the bank, opened up the safe, didn't take any money yet, they just left. Then 12 hours later while the police are literally at the fucking bank gathering evidence from a crime scene to find out if you know Money has been taken they then now sneak back into that bank and then take money in front of the police officers And then sneak away second time the defense attorney said that activity on Libby's phone 12 hours after the girls were believed to be dead and The complexity of the crime would be beyond any one normal man's ability But the thing about her phone pinging later, that doesn't mean that like
Starting point is 01:24:06 they were doing anything with the phone. And also what, one man, what couldn't do this, right? Cause one man has literally never ever killed two girls in one day before and gotten away with it, just snucking away, not once. Had these attorneys literally never represented anyone who charged with murder before? Had balls and cocky never listened to a podcast episode about a serial killer before?
Starting point is 01:24:28 Had Balz and Khaki never in fact gone to law school? But instead just written the word, congrats, you're a lawyer now, and crayon on some blank pieces of paper and then signed their name under it and then used those pieces of paper to somehow get a sign to this case. Additionally, Balz and Khaki said the state's timeline did not match security video evidence showing Allen's car leaving the trail before the murders occurred. October 21, jurors viewed some graphic and disturbing crime scene photos now. The following items are found in the creek. A pair of jeans that were inside out with underwear wrapped around the legs.
Starting point is 01:24:57 One Nike tennis shoe. A white bandana piece of fabric. A sock. A black spaghetti strap shirt turned inside out. A tie-dye t-shirt turned inside out, a black sock, and a gray hooded sweatshirt. Libby was again found nude and as I mentioned Abby was found wearing Libby's clothes. The jeans were unfastened, looked too big for her. She had on a black, she had on a black hooded sweatshirt with Delphi swimming on the front and German on the back.
Starting point is 01:25:23 The other black and white Nike shoe was found under Abby's body and Libby's cell phone was found under the shoe. ISP crime scene investigator Sergeant Jason Page, who photographed the bodies, testified that the girls were covered in so much blood from lacerations to their throats that it had completely soaked the ground beneath them. Some blood stains were also found on surrounding trees. Again, they had not been shot, they had been, you know, cut badly. They had their throat slashed and I believe their families were just now learning this. How traumatic. Witnesses
Starting point is 01:25:53 were asked about what firearms investigators carried and when they arrived at the scene about half of them did not have a firearm on them and it wouldn't matter if they did because of the fucking ballistics testing again. The jury heard about additional evidence collected the the crime scene, including strands of hair from both girls' hands, a cell phone, and swabs from their bodies. The full video from Libby's phone also played in court now. Showed Libby walking and talking towards the end of High Bridge. Libby said in the video, there's no path, so we have to go down here.
Starting point is 01:26:19 See the trail ends here. The video shows the male suspect approaching them and then Abby running off the bridge. Another witness was Railey Voorhees who was a high school student back in 2017. She was on the bridge the same days the girls as she was leaving she said she saw an unfriendly looking man walking around in the area. She learned about the murders on February 14th, believed the man she saw on the bridge was involved. She described him as a white man in black clothing. Breonna Wilbur, one of Kelsey German's close friends, testified that she was with Rayleigh on February 13th, saw the same man on the trail. She believed the man from the video was the same man they saw. Witness Betsy Blair, who was
Starting point is 01:26:56 also on the trail that day, testified she saw Libby and Abby walking with Bridge Guy on the trail. Witness Sarah Carbaugh testified that she walks her dogs near the trail every day and on February 13, 2017, she drove past the trails three times to gauge the number of people there based on cars in the parking lot. On her way back home, she said she saw a man on the side of the road who looked muddy, bloody, and unfriendly. She didn't hear about the missing girls until an Amber Alert was issued on February 13. She said she didn't go to the police until three weeks later because she was scared and
Starting point is 01:27:26 upset. In her statement, as noted by the defense, she said the man was either bloody or muddy, not both. She claimed a large part of her statement was missing as well. The jury then heard from Dr. Roland Cora, who performed both autopsies. Dr. Cora said that Abby had one external wound on the left side of her neck about seven inches long. She also had a faint line on her face that could have been from tape or cloth that would have covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming or speaking. Libby had four or five wounds to her neck and
Starting point is 01:27:55 the three main vessels in her neck had all been cut. The injuries appeared to be from a serrated edge about the size of a box cutter, but Dr. Corr was unable to conclusively determine what kind of knife it was or how many instruments were used on the girls. ISP computer forensic examiner Christopher Cecil was asked if any information from the 23 devices seized from Allen's home linked him to the murders. Cecil testified that the only thing found on Allen's devices was a search on Abby and Libby. But it is unknown who searched for that information. Cecil did note that Allen's phone from 2017 was not found in the house and therefore was not analyzed. He had gotten rid of it.
Starting point is 01:28:34 Kathy Schenck testified about the tip that led to Allen's arrest. She was a volunteer receptionist for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. Over two years, she said she had entered more than 14,000 tips into an online database. She found a tip that said, on February 16th Richard Allen reported being on the trail between 1 30 p.m and 3 30 p.m and had seen three girls. That caught her attention because the girls saw a man walking around that time. She sent the tip to a detective the day she found it, September 21st, 2022. That was the only tip that mentioned Richard Allen. Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Daniel Doolan had originally been asked to follow up on leads. He started with Allen that tip back on February 18th,
Starting point is 01:29:13 2017. He had called Allen asking to come to the station or meet at his house. Allen denied the request. He ended up meeting at a grocery store parking lot instead. Allen said he originally stated he was at the bridge from 1 to 3 o'clock, but he recanted that statement, said it was 1.30 to 3.30 p.m. He said he saw three girls on the nearby Freedom Bridge, claimed he parked at the Farm Bureau parking lot, but it was clear he parked at the old CPS building and walked to the Freedom Bridge and then to the Monon High Bridge. Despite those inconsistencies, he was not questioned further at that time. Then over five years later, September 22nd, 2022, Officer
Starting point is 01:29:49 Doolin received a message asking if he recalled his interaction with Richard Allen. He said the name didn't sound familiar to him, but then he met the lead prosecutor and did some further research. He found a fishing license registered to Allen and his wife. When Allen purchased the license, he had changed his height from 5'4 to 5'6 in April of 2017. He thought it was unusual for an adult to change their height, especially by two inches. That is weird. But still, he wasn't questioned further. Steve Mullen, a former lead investigator, testified that he received a call on September
Starting point is 01:30:17 21, 2022 from Sheriff Tony LeGette about Alan. Allen had two vehicles registered to him, a 2006 Ford 500 and a 2016 Black Ford Focus. Mullen went to the Hoosier Harbor store to find video that could place Allen at the scene back on February 13th, 2017. He saw that the vehicle in question entered the frame at 127, which is significant because Allen said he arrived at the CPS building around 1 30. Mullen spoke with Allen on October 13th, 2022, after the sheriff told him he was obligated to go to the station.
Starting point is 01:30:54 Allen said he went to his mother's house on the morning of February 13th and came home to get a jacket before heading out to the trail. Said he had walked past again, three girls, but wasn't paying much attention because he was on his phone. His outfit that day was a blue or black Carhartt jacket, jeans, military style boots, and a skull cap. Allen became agitated during his interview and then left the room. The police then ordered a search warrant for Allen's house. Investigators did find a blue carhartt jacket during that search. ISP investigator Jerry Holman testified that he assisted in the search and explained to Allen that if there were any damages
Starting point is 01:31:21 he would give Allen a form to fill out. And Allen responded it doesn't matter it's over that doesn't look good the court then heard testimony from a former detective now current sheriff Tony Liggett when he testified the jury viewed the enhanced video from Libby's phone Liggett had already seen the video hundreds of times so the prosecution asked him to tell the jury what he thought that the girls were saying and according to Liggett Abby Abby said, is he right here? Don't leave me up here. Libby responded, see this is the path. And that be a gun. There is no path here. A male voice then heard saying, guys,
Starting point is 01:31:56 the girl said hi and the male voice said down the hill. October 28th, a forensic scientist testified that DNA evidence found at the crime scene did not match Allen. What? First forensic firearm examiner Melissa Obert testified that she was given a.40 caliber Winchester Smith & Wesson bullet. It was in good condition. She saw three ejector marks on the head of the caliber, three extractor marks under the rim, miscellaneous marks on the primer, and miscellaneous articles in the
Starting point is 01:32:25 rim around the primer. She determined that Richard Allen's gun and only his gun had cycled that particular bullet. DNA analyst Stacey Bozhanofsky then reviewed 30 pieces of evidence from the crime scene, including sexual assault kits, and discussed what was found. Most of the swabs contained blood from either victim or mixture of both. Hair found on Abby's pinky finger was determined to belong to Libby's sister Kelsey German. There was no DNA evidence of a sexual assault. Furthermore, none of the items she tested contained Richard Allen's DNA and none of
Starting point is 01:32:56 the items seized from Allen's home connected him to the murders. The unspent cartridge had no DNA profile due to the item's size. There was some male DNA found under the girl's fingernails and from external genital swabs, but no DNA sufficient for testing was found. The amounts detected were quote, very, very little. And the presence of male DNA likely came according to investigators from the girls living with the man or sharing clothing with a male, not necessarily from a sexual assault. She tested socks and underwear found in the creek as well as Nike shoes, but the water made it difficult to obtain DNA samples.
Starting point is 01:33:28 72 rootless hair fibers were sent to the FBI for testing. Three of them had DNA inconsistent with either girl, but Bosanovsky decided not to do additional testing because the likelihood those fibers would be destroyed in that testing process. Investigators also determined that a hair found on the sheet inside of Libby's body bag came from another female whose identity was not known. Blood spatter expert Patrick Cicero testified that there was water mixed with the blood on Libby's face and that that water could have come from tears. Cicero testified that he was asked to provide insight on the case in February of 2024.
Starting point is 01:34:02 He was not at the crime scene in 2017, but relied on photos and reports. He did visit the scene to do a reconstruction as well. Based on blood patterns at the scene, he said that Livy was likely sitting when her throat was cut, that she then fell over, leaned over her leg. He said that Livy was likely badly injured when her throat was slashed, but not killed right away, and that she then ran to the spot where she did die. He believes her body was then dragged back to the location beside Abby. Abby only had blood in the area of her neck injury. Her body was in a boxer's position.
Starting point is 01:34:34 She did not have blood on her hands or sleeves. And the lack of blood on her hands led him to believe she was unconscious or restrained in some way when she was killed. Otherwise she would have instinctively grabbed at her wound. He also testified that it likely took, quote, some time for Abby to die. Parts of Allen's October 13th, 2022 interview with Steve Mullen and Tony Liggett were played in court. They discussed a statement from February 2017, asked him to walk them through his day on February 13th.
Starting point is 01:35:04 Allen was asked about searching his phone to which he responded, it sounds like I'm going to be somebody's fall guy. Alan wanted the police to know he wasn't questioning their integrity, but based on the conversation they were having, he said, it's like you think I did it. Mullen asked to search his home, but Alan would not let him do so without a warrant. And then they showed up with a warrant a few hours later. Alan then agreed to let the police go through his phone and was just about to hand it over.
Starting point is 01:35:27 Then he pulled it back, said he needed to speak to his wife first. ISP investigator Jerry Holman spoke to Allen on October 26, 2022, the day of his arrest. He said that Allen denied any involvement in the murders over 30 times, saying, I didn't do it. I don't know what you're talking about. Holman told Allen he could face the death penalty and Allen then said, quote, go ahead, kill me. You'll make my wife it. I don't know what you're talking about." Holman told Allen he could face a death penalty, and Allen then said, quote, go ahead, kill me. You'll make my wife rich. I've been dealing with wanting to die for years. Yeah. Westville Correctional Facility Warden John Gallipo testified that Allen
Starting point is 01:35:57 was largely quiet for the first three months of his incarceration, but then started to behave erratically, like big time. Started doing shit like washing his face in the toilet and also taking his shit on the floor of his cell. Allen also confessed to the murders in person and via notes during this time period. On March 15, 2023, Allen first said he was ready to confess. He said he killed the girls with a box cutter that he then disposed of at CBS. Several officers who were on Allen's suicide watch testified he confessed multiple times to them. Like the warden, they testified that he was normal when he first arrived to WCF, but then after
Starting point is 01:36:30 a few months he began doing shit like drinking out of the toilet and also rubbing his shit on himself. They said that at one point he asked for World War III, okay, and one of the COs noted in their log that they heard Alan say that the funniest joke he'd ever told was killing those girls. CEO Jason Bedwell also noted in one of his logs that he heard Allen say to himself, I'm sorry for what I did. I'm sorry for killing those girls. Was he going crazy because he was an innocent man feeling like he was being framed for two horrible murders? Or was he going crazy because of a guilty conscience? Or because the walls were closing in and he started to believe he never was going to walk free again. CEO Michael Clemens
Starting point is 01:37:09 noted in his prison log that Allen said I Richard Matthew Allen killed Abby and Libby by myself no one helped me. On November 4th a defense expert testified about Allen's mental state in prison. They said that Allen had a history of mental health issues including depression and had experienced psychosis. Dr. Monica Walla was Allen's psychologist at Westville. She told the court that Allen had confessed to the murders multiple times to her. She said that he admitted that he had followed the girls, ordered them down the hill, and that he initially had intended to rape them but not kill them, but then got worried about
Starting point is 01:37:39 getting caught. She said that he admitted to cutting their necks and then quickly covering their bodies with sticks, and that he had expressed a desire for closure and wanted to apologize to the victim's families. She also agreed that Alan's mental health deteriorated over the course of his incarceration, and that he had exhibited erratic behavior such as eating his own shit, banging his head into cell walls, and skipping meals. Huh. Wait a minute. Is eating your own shit considered erratic behavior? Like for real?
Starting point is 01:38:09 Like even if you have super tasty shit? Just, you know, just curious. Just asking for a friend. From April to June, 2023, she testified that Allen was paranoid, depressed, and then began writing suicide notes and giving away his belongings from his cell. Allen had told Dr. Waller during an April 5th, 2023 session, quote, I killed Abby and Libby. I'm sorry. Allen had a mental breakdown, April 24, 2023, had to be involuntary injected with a sedative for his own safety. Then a week later, May 2, Allen confessed again saying, I killed Abby and Libby. I will kill
Starting point is 01:38:39 everyone. During yet another confession, Allen made nonsensical statements that he, quote, killed myself and my family and my best friend. He was fucking cracking up After May 3rd meeting dr. Wall had diagnosed Allen with brief psychotic disorder with disorganized speech and behaviors But no delusions or catatonic behavior also and this is important to note She thought Allen was faking some of the behaviors he presented. She found the timing of his erratic behavior Fairly suspicious She found the timing of his erratic behavior fairly suspicious. Some of his new symptoms increased and he began confessing directly after he'd received information about the evidence the prosecution was going to present against him at trial.
Starting point is 01:39:14 She also testified that the Department of Corrections cannot hold someone for more than 30 days in solitary and yet Alan was held in solitary for 13 months, which could have led to his decline in mental health. Okay, sure, but probably better for his mental health than to have put him with other prisoners who might have shanked the fuck out of him. Wall also acknowledged that she had shared information she had found online or heard in podcasts about the murder case with Allen because she wanted to remind him he had some supporters out there who hadn't given up hope on him.
Starting point is 01:39:44 That's weird to me. She also acknowledged she used the DOC database to search for things for her own personal interests and agreed her actions were against APA policy. While even admitted she shared information about the case online and would have approached her involvement differently if given a second chance. Clearly a lot of people in Carroll County not ready for a case this serious. It's the fucking amateur hour. The next witness to testify was Master Trooper Brian Harshman, who had monitored Allen's
Starting point is 01:40:10 communications in jail. Eight of Allen's calls were played for the jury. He confessed to his wife in four of those calls. He said on one occasion, quote, honey, I did it. I killed Abby and Libby. His wife then told him to stop saying that. But he continued repeating the confession, adding, I need you to know that I did it. I killed Abby and Libby. His wife then told him to stop saying that but he continued repeating the confession adding I need you to know that I did this. I think I've lost my mind.
Starting point is 01:40:29 Alan said in one call, I did it. Just know I did it. I killed Abby and Libby. And then his wife Kathy responded, they're screwing with you in there. Alan then said, I think I did it. I wish they would kill me or let me apologize to the families at least. Alan told his mom on another call, did Kathy tell you I did it? And his mom replied, we're not gonna discuss this okay? We love you. You know that don't you? And Alan told her, I'm worried that you guys aren't going to love me because I said I did it. Officer Harshman, who spent hours listening to Alan's voice, also identified Bridge Guy's voice as Richard Allen's voice, which is a big deal obviously. Harshman also testified that
Starting point is 01:41:04 he was given a report by Dr. Monica Walla with the details of Allen's confession. In that report, Allen claimed he visited his parents in Peru, not the country, another little town in Indiana, on the morning of February 13th, the morning of the murders, Peru's not very far away. Afterwards, he bought some beer, drank three of them, finished the rest later, said he saw the girls,
Starting point is 01:41:22 followed them down the bridge, then laid in wait. He thought the bullet fell out of his gun at that time. He said he ordered the girls down the hill, intended to rape them because he thought they were older than they were, but then a van scared him and he decided not to follow through with his plan. He said he crossed the creek, cut their necks, made sure they were dead, covered them up with some brush, and then bounced. To me it makes sense in this scenario that he would forget to do something with like Libby's cell phone, right? Like the whole cell phone is still being there. It fits with him. Doesn't fit with an organized cult doing some fucking Norse ritual. But this guy just fucking out of his mind eating his own shit. Fucking snapping and pretty you know in his isolation and
Starting point is 01:42:04 he seems like a fucking mess. I'm like, okay, that guy would leave his cell phone behind. Also, the age thing here is so weird to me. Very strange morals there, right? I was gonna rape him, but then I realized, oh no. No, no, no, no, no. They're too young for rape. So I did the right thing. I just slit their throats and then I ran instead. Also just a fucking insane thing to do. Final prosecution witness Also just a fucking insane thing to do. Final prosecution witness was Brad Weber, a Carroll County resident who lived next to the High Bridge trails on February 13th, 2017. Actually, before I should back up. Now that raping them would be a sane thing to do.
Starting point is 01:42:36 I don't want that to come across. It's just weird fucking logic is what I'm saying. I feel like that came out weird. I mean, obviously a sane person would have raped and killed him. No, that's not what I was getting. I feel like that came out weird. I mean obviously a sane person would have raped and killed him. No that's not what I was getting at at all. Okay the final prosecution witness was Brad Weber, Carroll County resident who lived next to the Highbridge Trails on February 13, 2017. He left his job at Subaru, drove straight home, arrived around 2 30 p.m. and he was driving a white van at the time. He was questioned because Alan had told Dr. Walla in one of those confessions that a van was, you know, spooked him into killing the girls. And this proved a van would have driven
Starting point is 01:43:09 by around the time he said he was spooked, which added some validity to his confession. Now it was ball and cocky's turn to flex some fucking legal muscle in this case. The defense team's first order of business, 1-800-BUSINESS, was to call Donnie Pipes, a local Calliope player, and ask him to quote, use his magic fingers to kick out some old school bangers to get everyone in the right headspace for the truth bombs that were about to blow up the fucking court. And this is what Donnie played that day. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 01:43:41 Well, wait. No. Wait a minute. No. No, no, no, wait, no. Wait a minute, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, that's, I'm sorry, that's not what Donnie played. No, no, no. This is the fucking banger, truth bomb soundtrack he let rip. Yeah!
Starting point is 01:43:54 Uh-huh. That's the secret sauce. That's gonna put the jury in the palm of their hands. That's nonsense. Uh-huh. That's the secret sauce. That's gonna put the jury in the palm of their hands. That's nonsense. Uh, the defense began by calling Cheyenne Meldonstand.
Starting point is 01:44:12 She was on the High Bridge Trail with her friend Shelby Duncan around 2.50 p.m. February 13th, the day of the murders. She said she saw five people on the trail, an overweight man, a man, and a woman in the parking lots, and a couple she knew from high school. Doesn't sound like she saw a bunch of Odinous cultists. The defense had previously planned to talk about, you know, strangely. She didn't hear or see anyone on either side of the bridge in the woods. Following morning after she heard about the murder, she called the police.
Starting point is 01:44:39 She claimed the woman on the phone she spoke to was rude. Then two weeks later, the police contacted her. on the phone she spoke to was rude. Then two weeks later, the police contacted her. She said she later deactivated her social media because people thought she knew something she didn't about the murders. Not sure how any of that helped Richard Allen's defense. The defense next called on Steve Mullen, prosecutor McLeelan's in-house investigator, and asked him about Brad Weaver, who lived next to the Highbridge Trail. Mullen said he had called We Weber to ask him about the vehicle he drove and to come for an interview. The phone call was not recorded.
Starting point is 01:45:08 Defense pointed out that Weber owned a six-hour. Mullin then told the court the gun was tested and was conclusively not a match for the cartridge found in the crime scene. Mullin also maintained that the cartridge could not have come from law enforcement because, again, it was an exact match with Allen's gun. Yet again, Ball and cocky. Balls and cocky proved Judge Gold correct in her assessment of them.
Starting point is 01:45:29 This testimony that they asked for makes them look incompetent. They truly seem to be, they seem to me to be fucking morons. I don't know, whatever law school they went to. Must not be that rigorous. Deanna Dwenjer, psychologist for the Department of Corrections, testified next.
Starting point is 01:45:44 She said that in April of 2023, Allen was diagnosed with a serious mental illness and a team of professionals concluded he had a quote, grave disability. Not sure what that has to do with his ability to murder or not though. But at least, you know, I can see how this witness is what they're doing with her. You know, they're trying to cast doubt on the validity of Allen's confessions. The defense then called on former Carroll County Sheriff Toby Lesenby, who testified he believed until August 2023 that at least two people were involved in the murders. Former Delphi Fire Chief Darrell Sterrett also testified that he did not see any clothes
Starting point is 01:46:16 in the creek during an initial search, but Abby's jeans and jacket and Libby's t-shirt were found in a nearby river later. Which I guess you know was they're trying to play this up like the killers you know kidnapped the girls and then left for a while then came back with them. Next up was Dr. Polly Westcott, a neuropsychologist. She started working with the defense in May of 2023. She testified that Alan had an extensive mental health history. He constantly felt like he was letting his family down and arrived at the Westville Correctional Facility with depression and anxiety.
Starting point is 01:46:48 She testified that Alan has a dependent personality disorder. He depended on his wife and when cut off from her, his depression escalated to psychosis. She determined that he was not faking or exaggerating his symptoms. Alan's daughter, Brittany Zapanta, and his half sister, Jamie Jones,
Starting point is 01:47:07 were then asked if Richard had ever molested them, and they both said no. And if he had molested them, how could he have possibly ever molested anyone or even wanted to? Brittany also testified that her father's appearance did not change prior to 2018, basically that he did not try to disguise himself in the wake of the murders, and she said he took her out on the trails after the murders and did not act differently than he had before. And then the defense arrested November 6, 2024. Closing arguments delivered on the following day, November 7th. During closing arguments, Professor Nicholas McLeelan showed the jury graphic photos of the girls' bodies, the video of the suspect taken from Lumby's phone and a recording of
Starting point is 01:47:43 Alan's confession. In closing, McLeelan told jurors that Alan's remark about the van was a detail only the killer would know. And now the defense closes by bringing back Donnie motherfucking Pipes into the courtroom, who plays another old school banger called Goofus. Uh huh. Picture this. While this fucking hot track plays, Bals and Cocky do a synchronized jig they'd rehearsed for months, while staring at the jury forming never blinking once, never breaking eye contact. When the song finishes, they each bow gracefully to the jury, sit down behind their desks, and say, at the same time-L-L-L-L-LAT'S ALL FOLKS! No.
Starting point is 01:48:27 The defense argued that Allen should be acquitted because of a broken timeline, false confessions, and a lack of DNA evidence. There was no physical evidence tying Allen to the murders and his confessions were involuntary due to him losing his fucking mind in solitary confinement. Hurting their closing arguments, Judge Fran Gull stood behind them making crazy faces and aggressively thumbing down all of their important statements. I wish, I wish that had happened. Four days later, November 11th 2024, after deliberating for 19 hours, the jury announces their decision. Richard Allen is found guilty on numerous counts. He is convicted of felony murder for
Starting point is 01:49:06 killing Abigail while attempting to commit kidnapping, felony murder for killing Liberty, murder for knowingly killing Abigail, and murder for knowingly killing Liberty. The following month, December 20th, 2024, Richard Allen is sentenced to 130 years in prison. Libby's mother, Carrie Timmons, then made an emotional victim impact statement. She said, as Libby's mom, I am left with so many what ifs. I'm left without memories of her growing up, getting her driver's license and first car, her first job. She didn't get to graduate and go on to college. We were cheated out of seeing her be the best auntie. She doesn't get to fall in love, get married and have babies. She was robbed of the opportunity to experience life and fulfill all of the dreams and aspirations she already had at such a young age.
Starting point is 01:49:50 While there will never really be justice or closure and nothing will bring my daughter back. I am so very proud of her for not only exposing her and Abby's killer, but also bringing much needed attention to so many cases near and far. This tragedy has not completely stopped Libby from accomplishing at least one dream from beyond the grave. Her courage and strength will live on as she guides us through this lifetime. Until we meet again, she is my sunshine.
Starting point is 01:50:15 And that is fucking beautiful. The girl who loved to watch true crime shows who hoped to help solve unsolved murder cases one day greatly helped in solving her own murder. A week before I recorded this episode, March 13, 2025, directly following the full 43-second video Libby recorded shortly before she died being released to the public, Richard Allen's attorneys filed an appeal against all the charges against him. Andrew Baldwin, aka Balls, gonna represent Alan still. Bradley Rossi, aka Cocky, appears to have moved on. For the past few months he has been busy in the
Starting point is 01:50:50 fucking studio making ear magic with Donnie motherfucking Pipes, ladies and gentlemen, working on a new track they are currently calling Ginger Snaps. That's real music, okay? Not today's fake overly produced auto-tune bullshit. That's real music! Okay? Not today's fake, overly produced, auto-tuned bullshit. That's fucking talent. That has soul. Fucking, that's painful. It's hard to listen to. I don't like it. For real now. According to Bradley Rossi's website, Cockie is currently general counsel to the Logan Sport Community School Corporation, Security Federal Savings Bank, Stony Pike, and Boswell Livestock Companies, and the Town of Royal Center, which is nearby.
Starting point is 01:51:28 Maybe murder trials just aren't his forte. Maybe he's better with other cases. Or maybe he's just good at selling his services, but his services actually suck. Interestingly, neither of the defense attorneys in lengthy bios on their websites reference having defended Richard Allen at all. Wonder why. And that'll take us out of this timeline. Good job soldier, you've made it back. And before I share some final thoughts about this tragic Indiana double murder and the shit show of a trial, we have another ad from one of the sponsors we had last week. It's another ad for the Falun Gong cult's dance troupe, Shen Yun.
Starting point is 01:52:16 Hello. Do you remember me? Your Shen Yun interdimensional law wheel? The alien that likes to be inside you? I want us to make so many law bodies together I want us to consummate our cultivation I want you to feel my giant gong. I want it to fertilize your Xing Xing. And I want us to dance. So dance with me.
Starting point is 01:52:55 Relinquish your lust. Do not deny it, you dirty little piggy. Let's get ancient Chinese together. Five thousand years of gongs. Five thousand years of xing xing law bodies. Consumating cultivating. Get your tickets now to Shen Yun performing at the Carroll County Fairgrounds this Friday. The greatest show in Indiana since Dick Dick Bluesay to the ring, Xing
Starting point is 01:53:49 Xing Gong Consummation. I still don't really understand why that Shen Yun announcer has a German-ish accent. And why he sounds so fucking pervy? There's still a lot I don't understand about Fei Lungang and Shen Yun. Talking about Indiana now, what a terrible and seemingly senseless crime, if the jury got it right. That some guy working at the local CVS,
Starting point is 01:54:19 a guy who lived in a little 3000 person town since 2006, living there going back 11 years before the girls were killed. And he lived less than 40 miles away before that in Mexico, Indiana, town of just 900 people. How strange and scary that a guy whose entire criminal history only included two traffic citations before these murders, a speeding ticket from 2005
Starting point is 01:54:41 and a ticket for driving without a seatbelt in 2003, that he could just fucking snap, pull out a gun, march a 13 year old and 14 year old girl down a creeks bank to rape them along a trail within walking distance of his house. Girls he had to have seen around his small town many many times for years. Then he panicked, slashed her throats with the box cutter, covered up with some brush, then just got right back to work at CVS. CVS within walking distance of both his home and the murder site And he just kept you know ringing folks up talking about the murders at the cash register Talking to the victims families for over five years like nothing had ever happened
Starting point is 01:55:18 It's an especially scary case because it illustrates that anyone right your 40 something year old neighbor with no criminal history who's been holding a steady job for over a decade, someone who's not a sex offender, they could just fucking snap and do that out of the blue. And I do think he did it. The strange mentally ill behavior he exhibited after being held in solitary confinement for months, behavior his defense attorneys pointed out to illustrate how his confessions were not valid because he was no longer in his right mind, that behavior to me matches up with the behavior of the murderer. What kind of person takes two girls down into some brush right next to town along a fucking popular walkway in broad daylight to try and rape them, two girls who live in the very small same,
Starting point is 01:55:59 you know, the same very small town that he does, a fucking crazy person does that, someone who's not mentally stable, someone who might, I don't know, start eating their own shit a few months after being put in solitary. A lot of people get put in solitary. Most of them don't eat their own shit, from what I understand. You know, what kind of person does that? Somebody who could, I don't know, keep their shit together after the fact and tell the police, start to really focus on them, and then they feel all this pressure, and they start to worry that they're never gonna get out, now they start to uh you know fucking go crazy again. Yeah I think Richard Allen based on what I have read is the bridge guy. I hope he's the bridge guy. That the real killer is not still out there on the loose somewhere. I definitely don't think the girls were killed by members of some
Starting point is 01:56:38 Odinist cult who kidnapped them, drove them somewhere, then drove them back while the search party was canvassing the area, then killed them in that area, then snuck away a second time in about 12 hours. How fucking weird was that defense? How funny also to have that judge openly mock their incompetence. And how are both of those attorneys still getting business in that area? They both work for law offices that seem very reputable. Lots of clients. I don't know competition must not be too heavy for lawyers out in Carroll County,
Starting point is 01:57:09 Indiana. I hope that county never sees another terrible crime like that one. I also hope that if another crime like that occurs and the police arrest the wrong guy, they don't hire the fucking legal services of balls and cocky. Still they do, They're fucked. Time now for this week's takeaways. Time shock. Top five takeaways. Number one, on February 13th, 2017, best friends and junior high girls, Libby German and Abby Williams are dropped off to spend a few hours wandering the Monon High Bridge Trail, a popular local spot just outside of Delphi,
Starting point is 01:57:45 Indiana, widely regarded as safe. They were missing for several hours and then the following day their bodies were found in the woods near an abandoned railroad bridge. It's a horrific crime scene. Both girls' throats have been cut. Libby was found naked. Abby had been naked before dressed in Libby's clothing. Number two, Libby German captured a chilling video of her killer approaching her in Abbey on the bridge. Investigators released a still from the video days after the murder as well as audio of the man telling the girls to go down the hill. Five years past before this man known as Bridge Guy is identified as Richard Allen, a local shit-eating maniac and CVS worker. Number three, Richard Allen was connected to the crime through a tip in ballistic evidence.
Starting point is 01:58:28 Allen admitted in February 2017 that he was at High Bridge on the day of the murders. That was the tip, but then that tip got lost in the cracks until 2022. Investigators questioned him and secured a search warrant then finally, five years after the murders for his home, and they discovered a 40 caliber gun that matched a bullet found at the crime scene. Number four, on November 11th, 2024, Richard Allen is convicted of two counts of felony murder and two counts of murder. The following month, he ascends to 130 years in prison. Borrowing a successful appeal, he will die in prison. Speaking of that appeal, number five, new info, more info about Allen's recent appeal. Back on January 20th of this year, Allen's attorneys, and yes, he still has balls leading his defense, filed a motion to overturn the conviction, arguing it should be vacated due
Starting point is 01:59:14 to three critical errors during trial. One piece of evidence the defense took issue with, and the appeal was a confession from an inmate at Newcastle Correctional Facility. The appeal was a confession from an inmate at Newcastle Correctional Facility. In May of 2017, an inmate wrote notes claiming old 77-year-old Ron Logan, allegedly confessed to the murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German, told him that he had used a box cutter to kill them. The bodies of Abbey and Libby were found on Logan's property in Delphi, February of 2017. The defense also took issue with Richard Allen's safekeeping order. His wife hired an attorney after he was arrested but that attorney was
Starting point is 01:59:48 not present when he was charged with murder. Allen was then transferred to the county jail without a safekeeping order. The defense argued this transfer was wrong and his right to legal representation had been breached. And the third issue centers around trial witness Brad Weber. Prosecutors should have corrected false evidence about the van's timing, they said. During the trial, they presented surveillance showing the van in the area at 2.44 p.m., 14 minutes later than what the prosecution said. None of that seems all that significant to me. Then in mid-February, Allen's defense requested
Starting point is 02:00:21 letters and taped interviews with an inmate named Ricky Davis who said he spoke with two men who admitted they were involved in the murders. Davis told the defense he sent up to eight letters to prosecutor Nick McLeelan during Allen's trial. The defense said those letters were never shared with them and the prosecutor refused to say whether he or his office received or shared the letters. Davis also said he did a recorded police interview, which the defense says they had not seen. The defense also says McLeelan refused to clarify whether that interview exists or if it had been shared with them. Davis was sentenced to 50 years in prison for dealing meth within a thousand feet of a youth program. He had turned himself in in 2014 for cooking meth in his home, which was close to a church. Police did not find meth in his home but did find materials
Starting point is 02:01:03 to make meth with. And David has been trying to appeal this sentence, so I'm guessing he's looking for a deal here. Davis said that Ron Logan, who again, was 77 years old when the girls were killed, told him three men were involved in the murders. He believes Logan and Keegan Klein, the young fucking creep convicted of possession
Starting point is 02:01:20 of child pornography and other charges, who loves to, I don't know, mumble, talking about, you know, my dad is fucking, my dad is fucking my dad's fucking grief, what are you gonna do? Were involved. He said he didn't know the identity of the third man. Logan allegedly told Davis he committed the murders, provided details only the killer would know. Davis is currently incarcerated at the Indiana State Prison in Newcastle. Klein was transferred there in 2024. Davis claims that Klein told him that he and Ron Logan shared child porn with each other and Klein supposedly shared details that only someone involved would know
Starting point is 02:01:49 Davis also said that Klein corroborated information Logan shared with him about the murders The defense motion states these conversations between Ricky Davis and Keegan Klein occurred all the way up to the guilty verdict At which time Klein expressed his relief that he Klein would no longer be a viable suspect in the murders due to Richard Allen's conviction. Davis told the defense that he asked Klein if Allen was the third man involved, and Klein said Allen had nothing to do with the murders. Davis first met with the defense in March of 2024, again in February of 2025. During that second conversation, Davis told defense attorney Andrew Baldwin, ol' fuckin' balls, that he was holding back
Starting point is 02:02:25 because he had not heard many details from Klein yet and he wasn't sure Allen wasn't one of the people involved. Davis was shocked to hear the defense never recovered, or excuse me, never received his recorded interview and letters. According to the defense's motion, quote, on the evening of February 12, 2025, defense counsel Baldwin sent an email to Nick McClellan and his in-house investigator Steve Mullen requesting they produce both the Davis, those letters, and any video recording in their possession of an interview with Ricky Davis. McClellan's response was vague, non-responsive to the defense request and did not indicate whether he, McClellan, ever received those letters nor whether he sent those letters to the defense.
Starting point is 02:03:02 In other words, McCLeelan never confirmed or denied the existence of said letters. Neither did he confirm or deny that he provided the aforementioned Ricky Davis letters to defense counsel. Baldwin requested the letters again February 13th, didn't get an answer by the time he filed the motion on February 14th. The state, however, counted that Davis quote, miserably failed a polygraph test when investigators pushed him for more info. And on February 18th, 2025, special judge Fran Gull, that judge who fucking hates balls and cocky, denied the motions filed in January and February by the defense.
Starting point is 02:03:38 Ten days later, on February 28th, the prosecutor responded to the defense's motion to preserve evidence from Ricky Davis. Prosecutor Nick McGlellan wrote, quote, Most of what Ricky Davis told Allen's defense attorney Andrew Baldwin is false. As mentioned, Davis claimed he sent eight letters, up to eight letters to the prosecutor. Records show he sent three. A little bit different number than eight. Two of them were attached to the motion.
Starting point is 02:04:01 And check this out, McLeiland further wrote, quote, the letters in fact accuse Richard Allen of committing the murders. So fucking Davis is playing both sides. He's trying to get a deal from the defense and the prosecution and he's telling each side whatever he thinks they want to hear and completely contradicting himself. In the first attached letter, Davis wrote
Starting point is 02:04:18 that Keegan Klein, Klein's father, Ron Logan and Richard Allen were all involved writing, quote, I am told they all had their hands in this murder. Then his second letter to the prosecutor's office Davis wrote that Baldwin had visited him. He wrote to the prosecutor quote, Mr. McLeelan, this ignorant lawyer was hinting me to lie for him and his client saying that I should know how it is. This ignorant lawyer, fucking balls getting shit on again. Davis wrote that Baldwin, quote, indicated this occult issue, but that it contradicted what Klein had told him.
Starting point is 02:04:50 He's still trying to work that Odinist cult angle. Davis added, I hope that we can speak because although Logan has passed away, the other two need to face the consequences. In text messages attached to the motion, Klein called Davis an idiot. And accused him of shopping stories
Starting point is 02:05:05 to prosecutors to get his sentence reduced. And then the DA, McClellan wrote, there's zero evidence found in the investigation that Ron Logan and Keegan Klein knew each other or shared or exchanged child pornography. Alan's appeal is going to fail miserably. Balls and his bullshit are going to make sure of that. The Delphi murders have been sucked. Interesting and of course, terribly sad case. Starting point is 02:06:04 And now let's head on over to this week's Time Sucker updates. Kicking things off this week with known drug user Joseph Mason, who has another fun Mr. Rogers related update. He sent in an email to Bojangles at timesuckpodcast.com with the subject line of, won't you be my neighbor? Greetings, sir sucks a lot. After hearing your latest podcast on Mr. Rogers, I thought I'd send you a funny related story. We're about the same age, however, I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a legend there.
Starting point is 02:06:41 I too watched Mr. Rogers for many years and loved the show. I remember many mornings sitting on the floor next to my grandmother enjoying his stories and songs. His show had a direct influence on my life. Fast forward about 18 years. I still live in Pittsburgh and frequent a local tavern. It's kind of place that has many regulars. One patron named Jim was there often. We conversed somewhat often and were I would say acquaintances. One night he asked if I liked The Grateful Dead. I said I did quite a bit and had seen many shows before Jerry Garcia had passed. He then said I have an extra ticket to the
Starting point is 02:07:12 other ones, leftover dead band members. Do you want to go? He asked. Of course I said yes. The night of the show we met at our tavern for a drink and then went downtown to see the concert. When we parked he said, do you get high? I said, sure. We smoked a bit, saw a great show. Fast forward another three weeks, I see Jim in the tavern. I sit down next to him and bullshit for a while, then someone comes up to Jim, hands him a framed picture of Mr. Rogers and a letter.
Starting point is 02:07:39 The person said, sorry for your loss and left. I was wondering why someone would give Jim something like that. So I asked, why did he give you that? And he said, that's my dad. I was blown away. I got high with Mr. Rogers' son. I'll never be the same.
Starting point is 02:07:54 Anyway, hope you liked my little story. Three out of five stars. Keep on sucking. Love the show, Joe. Joe, I did like your story. And you saw the dead, at least some of them with Mr. Rogers' son and you guys got stoned for it That's a great story. You get to hold on to forever
Starting point is 02:08:08 If anyone has a story of them a smoky weed with mr. Rogers and seeing the dead or any band Or just smoking weed with mr. Rogers, please send in that story. You're gonna one-up the shit out of Joe Joe is still a great story Now here is Super Sack Jack Jones with the mr. Rogers adjacent email sent in with the subject line of My Dad Update and Mr. Rogers. Hi Dan, I will preemptively tell you to fuck off in regards to any hope of me apologizing about the length of this email. Fair. But here goes. I wish I could be righty with better news, but unfortunately I can't say that's the
Starting point is 02:08:40 case. I wrote you a couple months back, I remember, about my dad having pancreatic cancer and how scared, angry, and deflated I felt. And Dan, I have to thank you for the advice you gave about taking advantage of every moment we had together because on February 28th my dad passed away quickly and unexpectedly. He went in for a routine procedure to get his pancreas checked out with an endoscopic camera and that would go down his throat on the Wednesday before. Well someone fucked up and perforated an artery either didn't notice or he had gone like the Wednesday before. Someone had perforated an artery neither didn't notice or failed to address it and two days later his entire
Starting point is 02:09:16 body shut down. His organs failed and not even an hour after I made it to the hospital and said my last goodbye my dad died while I held his hand. The last few weeks have been incredibly hard. I'm gearing up for finals at school. My house looks like a tornado hit it. I've had neither the time nor energy to clean it. I'm just so fucking tired and sad. But today I listened to your episode on Mr. Rogers and it reminded me so much of my dad. Despite having decidedly the exact opposite childhood, my dad growing up poor, but with many friends, they ended up very similar. My dad was a lawyer and was the kind of lawyer who,
Starting point is 02:09:48 when a client approached him but could not afford his fee, he would never turn them away. He did legal work for an apple farmer. And in lieu of payment, my family got cases of apples and apple cider for the next two years. He constantly gave free legal advice and services to family and friends who would always find a way to help anyone and would always find A way to help anyone with any problem big or small
Starting point is 02:10:08 He always said I would have made a good lawyer Most because I could come up with a new bullshit argument on the spot to suit my agenda at a moment's notice But he discouraged me from the practice because quite frankly it was quote miserable work in his opinion Instead he encouraged me to do what made me happiest and taught me to love every person like they were my family regardless of color, creed, sexual orientation, or any other identifier. He also taught me to be generous to a fault some instances. His first lesson he ever taught me was if you have two dollars in your pockets and your friend needs two dollars that's their two dollars. Needless to say the episode was giving me the sniffles from the start but when
Starting point is 02:10:42 you talked about his fear of dying being based on not having done enough of what he wanted to do for the world, I started bawling. This was the saddest part of my dad's passing to me. There was so much he still wanted to do, so many people he wanted to help. My first college graduation, he wanted to see me walk in, all taken from him because some dipshit didn't pay close enough attention. But that wasn't the lesson I left the episode with. It was instead that much like Mr. Rogers, the legacy my dad left behind and the lives he touched was so positive,
Starting point is 02:11:08 so special, so important, and more than anything, that is what I should be grateful for. Thank you, Dan. This day, week, and month have still been incredibly hard, but I appreciate the little bit of peace that episode brought me. Keep on sucking, Jack Jones. Damn Jack, uh, whoo, uh, you getting that out of that episode gave me more out of it as well. And condolences, so sorry for your dad, uh, may he rest in peace. And yeah, that episode was a nice little break from the darkness, right? Uh, I might need to take more of those breaks this year. Yeah, I'm so glad you got to be there with your dad at the very end. I truly hope I'm as lucky with my own kids one day.
Starting point is 02:11:46 I think that's about as good as it gets. Your dad sounds incredible and so do you. Now go crush those finals. Think how proud of you he is when you're done. You sound like an A plus son. And now extra info. Sackjug Douglas shares a fun Mr. Rogers update. He sent in the following email with the subject line of,
Starting point is 02:12:06 Mr. Rogers made the best Batman possible. Hey Dan, I wrote you once before about the Fellowship of Friends cult in Northern California with their tiny fucking oranges that I'm sure Bob, oh Bob in his bonsai fruit, would love to get his greasy hands on. Still a worthy cult subject worth following up. Jennings Brown did a great podcast called Revelations about some of their kid touchy history but he left out a lot about forced family planning and other craziness. I worked for one of their members for many years, saw some wild stuff. Well I did just send that cult
Starting point is 02:12:35 information along to one of our researchers because of this message and then he continues with I just finished your episode on Mr. Fred McFeely Rogers and loved it. A huge piece of a lot of our formative years. I can't believe you didn't mention that Michael Keaton's first job in showbiz was handing or excuse me, yeah, handing Mr. Rogers props through the hole in the wall. He wrote glory hole during episodes. At the time he was Michael Douglas, no relation to myself. But he changed his name to Keaton because the moniker was taken.
Starting point is 02:13:03 And I did hear that, but I didn't know about him working for mr. Rogers without the work. Mr. Rogers did we would not have Beetlejuice or arguably but not really the best batman that ever existed the more you know I love that little fucking piano melody. Thank you very much to you and lindsay and the whole bad magic crew Huge fan of all things bad magic three out out of five stars. Wouldn't change a thing Jack, or excuse me, I had Jack from the previous, Joel Douglas. Joel, I did not know that Michael Keaton once PA'd for Mr. Rogers. Yeah, I looked into it. Yeah, he was a production assistant for Mr. Rogers, his first fucking gig in entertainment. How cool is that? And I love Michael Keaton. I thought the Beetlejuice sequel was great by the way and loved him as Batman. I pretty
Starting point is 02:13:48 much loved him in everything. Loved him in Dopesick. Yeah, he's great. And now one more. This is a little different. My buddy of guys put a lot of ink on my body now the last five, six, seven years. Willxx. We were texting back and forth this morning about, you know, our polarized culture. And he shared an old sketch that was done by Monty Python member, John Kleese. And he recorded this following satirical piece in 1987. I found Kleese making fun of the far left and the far right almost 40 years ago. Very relevant right now. And just strangely comforting, right?
Starting point is 02:14:22 Like that none of this is new in a sense. And I hope maybe you get some comfort out of this as well. Fantastic little piece here. Seriously though, we've heard a lot about extremism recently, a nastier, harsher atmosphere everywhere, more abuse and bother boy behavior, less friendliness and tolerance and respect for opponents. All right, but what we never hear about extremism is its advantages. Well, the biggest advantage of extremism is that it makes you feel good because it provides you with enemies. Let me explain. The great thing about having enemies is that you can pretend that all the badness in the whole world is in your enemies and all the goodness in the whole world is in you.
Starting point is 02:15:04 Attractive, isn't it? So, if you have a lot of anger and resentment in you anyway, and you therefore enjoy abusing people, then you can pretend that you're only doing it because these enemies of yours are such very bad persons, and that if it wasn't for them, you'd actually be good-natured and courteous and rational all the time. So, if you want to feel good, become an extremist. Okay, now you have a choice. If you join the hard left, they'll give you their list of authorized enemies.
Starting point is 02:15:34 Almost all kinds of authority, especially the police, the city, Americans, judges, multinational corporations, public schools, furriers, newspaper owners, fox hunters, generals, class traitors, and, of course, moderates. Or, if you'd rather be an extremist on the hard right, no problem, fine, you still get a lovely list of enemies, only they're different ones. You see minority groups, unions, Russia, weirdos, demonstrators, welfare sponges, meddlesome clergy, peaceniks, the BBC, strikers, social workers, communists, and of course, moderates. And upstart actors. Now, once you're armed with one of these super lists of enemies, you can be as nasty as you like and yet feel your behaviors
Starting point is 02:16:25 morally justified. So you can strut around abusing people and telling them you could eat them for breakfast and still think of yourself as a champion of the truth, a fighter for the greater good, and not the rather sad paranoid schizoid that you really are. I thought that was fucking brilliant. Sometimes you just gotta take a break from just being angry and just laugh at the absurdity of life and human behavior. Thanks for the messages this week everybody. Thanks time suckers. I needed that. We all did. Well thank you for listening to another Bad Magic Productions podcast. Scared to death, time suck each week. Short sucks and nightmare fuels and the time suck and scared to death podcast feeds twice a month.
Starting point is 02:17:09 Please don't kill anybody this week. But if you do, and you want to get away with it, please don't hire Andrew Baldwin or Bradley Rossi. Just keep on sucking. TARZ! TARZ! TARZ! TARZ! TARZ! Ad Magic Productions Ad Magic Productions
