Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Podcast. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch. Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily, and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Henley, and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy, and I love watching scary movies, and so I watch them so that you don't have to. And I'm really excited about today's movie. I cried in it and I got a little nervous that I might cry in the recap.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I don't think that I will, but something really got me in this one. So if you want to jump to the recap of this week's movie, there are timestamps in the show notes because first we have a bit of haunted housekeeping. Hellchella, ever heard of it? Hellchella goes strong. I think we're like right at the midpoint of Hellchella.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Yeah, it's mid-July, so that checks out. Yeah. For those who don't know, Hellchella is our summer series where every episode for June, July, and August, we are covering new releases. They are all going to be available as video episodes on our Patreon. I think I'm going to use some visual aids in this one. So I haven't done that in a while. And by that, I mean, I'm going to change my background image a few times. Cool, cool, cool. Great. And then one other bit of info that you
Starting point is 00:01:47 might like to know is that we have another live show coming up on July 28th at 4.30 Pacific, 7.30 Eastern. We are going to be recapping Long Legs. I'm really excited. I saw it over the weekend. I'm going to see it again before the show. It was a movie that I like left and immediately wanted to see again. Such a great feeling. Yeah, that's a real Sammy thing. That's a real Sammy feeling.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Yeah, it's true. I guess a lot of people never have that feeling. My coworker saw it over the weekend and I saw her today and she said that she really wished she had waited until we talked about it. I think she's pretty upset. It's pretty upsetting. Yeah. It's really so Ashley, I'm sorry. Sorry. So curious. Yeah. And Joel's seeing it right now. And so I'll have to get his thoughts without getting his thoughts, which is always an interesting thing. It's been divisive some people i've spoken to have really hated it so we'll see what you guys think we'll see on july 28th at 4 30 p.m pacific and i think oh there's a little bit more haunted house a little bit more there's a little bit more emily what is that and that's that that maybe by the time this episode is out, I think by the time
Starting point is 00:03:05 this episode is out, that we'll have merch, Hellchella merch available for purchase. I will be purchasing. You gotta perch your merch. I will be purchasing. I'll be perching some merch.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Gotta perch that merch. It's Hellchella Summer and you gotta show it off. And the link for that merch will be in our bio. Yes, we don't have it yet and our website and on the internet you'll figure it out we'll let you know but um hell yeah hell chela merch hell chela
Starting point is 00:03:34 okay i think that's and that's it okay so did anything scary happen to you guys this week i i got called to jury duty i got called to jury duty. I got called to jury duty. Yeah. I do think I talked about it a little bit in our live show already. So sorry. We had a lot of fun on our live show and I can't remember entirely the details of what I talked about. Who can say? But I did get called to jury duty this week and I really thought I was going to make it without getting actually called in because they make you check the night before. Every night I was like, whew, whew, didn't get called in, didn't get called in, didn't get called in. Thursday night rolls around. Spoiler alert. I was again, if you're watching the video, you can see that there's another person here and I was
Starting point is 00:04:11 hanging out with her and I checked my freaking phone and I got called to jury duty on a freaking Friday and I was not happy about it, but I did not get placed on a jury. I actually got dismissed quite early. So it was not, it was not too bad. I did. I actually got dismissed quite early. So it was not too bad. I did. I want to shout out Taylor. I met Taylor. Lovely. We were there together in solidarity, me and Taylor.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Wow. People are going to think you mean Taylor Swift, but let's just. Well, I won't say which Taylor. I won't say which Taylor. Let them think what they want. People can think what they want about which Taylor I'm talking about in Los Angeles. Taylor and Lautner. Could have been either one of them.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Could have been either one of them. But it's really just why I was just sitting there thinking like some of these people will be on a jury. And they did mention that they were getting a jury together for a 70 day trial. That's insane. Which is certainly where something very bad happened. And I mean, I hope I, I know you want to be in a jury, Sammy.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I never do. It's really wild to me that just like the people in that room are the people who decide who goes to prison and who doesn't and who it's just like, it's really crazy. It's really crazy.'s really crazy yeah and i mean somebody decided that that was the most just way for it to be done somebody did who am i to say differently i don't know that i have a better i don't know i have a better i don't think there is one i don't think there is one but it's a notion. And being in that room and realizing it could be you is like, oh, oh.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Who me? It's a lot of responsibility. It's a lot. It's our civic duty. It's ways that you're not used to thinking. Like I was on a civil trial. I mean, the case got delayed and I didn't get to be on the jury. But one of the differences between a civil trial and a criminal trial is that instead of proving things beyond
Starting point is 00:06:06 reasonable doubt, you just have to prove that something is more than likely. Now that's interesting. It's like a very interesting way of shifting the way you're thinking about something. And I'm like, I don't know if I'm capable of changing the way I've thought how courtrooms work. Like I thought you have to prove beyond reasonable doubt. And now you're just telling me I just have to think it's more than likely. I don't know what the differentiation is there. More than likely?
Starting point is 00:06:34 That's like a very vague range. Wow, I don't remember that at all. I was on a full court case that lasted a long time. And I deliberated and i didn't change my thinking one little bit i just thought about it how i was gonna think about it hey and you know what i think that's probably how it goes yeah you gotta assume that's what people are mostly gonna do yeah because yep that's i'm not capable of anything else yeah yeah and so i got dismissed i'm i'm free from being called again for the next year but did you know it's just a year you can get called every year technically
Starting point is 00:07:10 that's really often actually yeah that's very often especially imagine you're on a 70-day case i mean maybe if you are they wouldn't call you again the next year but like still that'd be rude that's like that's most of the year, anything scary happen to you guys to see? Oh, speaking of court cases. So I guess my, it's not good, but I guess my, I've been trying to think of what's scary that's happened to me. And usually when I can't think of something, I just talk about like a TV show I've been watching or a movie I've seen or a book I've been reading. And I think the scary thing is that I have not watched any TV in weeks, weeks and weeks and weeks. Totally against my will. I want to watch TV so badly. It's all I want to do. It's all I
Starting point is 00:07:57 want to do. And I just haven't had any time, any free time I want to be asleep. And so I'm sleeping. had any time, any free time, I want to be asleep. And so I'm sleeping. And usually I have some TV time and I don't. And do you know what? There are consequences. The ripple effect is I can't listen to The Watch, my favorite podcast. That was my first thought. Can't listen to your TV podcasts. I'm missing my deep parasocial relationship with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald. I can't talk to you guys about Presumed Innocent. Every night I go to bed and I think, I want to watch Presumed Innocent. I want to watch Jake Gyllenhaal. I want to watch him.
Starting point is 00:08:37 I'm so tired. I want to watch him, but I'm too tired. I'm too tired. And I'm really behind. And, you know, even I've just never been in this situation before. And it's really hard. It's really hard. And it does start to feel insurmountable because it's like, well, what? Am I going to start now?
Starting point is 00:08:56 It's racking up. There's so many things I want to watch. I want to watch Dark Matter. I do want to watch House of the Dragon. I want to watch The Bear. There are just so many things Yeah I haven't had time
Starting point is 00:09:07 I haven't had time I'm so tired I'm really sorry Henley I also unfortunately heard that the season of Love Island USA is really good Don't tell me that I don't have time for that How many episodes? 72?
Starting point is 00:09:23 500? I don't have time How many days has it been on i don't know if us does it the same way as the uk does but maybe yeah maybe 52 that's a lot um wow that's good to know that us is finally like picking up steam yes and someone told me that was a U.S. Love Island, USA skeptic. So. OK. So you got to trust the season, I guess. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. So add it to the list, Henley. OK. Is there any hope in sight? Any free time coming up for you to watch TV?
Starting point is 00:10:04 No, I don't know. No, because Tim is leaving. He's going to London for 11 days. Wait, but you're going to your parents. Can't you just force them to watch your kids and just watch TV the whole time? Isn't that how that works? You know, guys, it's hard to take care of a nine-month-old and a three-year-old. And my parents, God love them. They're not up to the task. Sure. So I'm going there more for just like moral support and to have other adults in the general vicinity so I'm not like so deeply alone. And also so someone like cleans up the kitchen. I was thinking about that when I like went downstairs. I was like, oh shit.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Like I don't have anyone else to help clean up. You know what I mean? Yeah. Kids are messy. Kids are so messy. And like when the small and a nine month old is eating, it's the splash radius is so huge and like it's so gross. Like that in and of itself is a like 20 minute task of just cleaning up maze, like crazy
Starting point is 00:11:01 eating everywhere. But anyway, so I don't know.'t know no no i'm really sorry to hear i'm sorry about that that's okay freaking stinks man really stinks i love tv i'm sorry thanks sammy what about you well you said speaking of, and then I'm not sure what the court thing was. Oh, presumed innocent. Okay, because mine is also speaking of the law and crimes. So I was trying to piggyback off that segue, and I think I did it really well. I think so.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Because I committed a crime this week, and I am going to admit it here on air okay nobody's allowed to arrest her scary in and of itself is i'm taking a huge risk don't arrest her i committed a forgery I forged my prescription cat food for Chewy.com. Oh my God. If there are any police officers listening, please. Oh my God. The door just busts down right now, even though it's not live. They're listening. They're always listening.
Starting point is 00:12:18 Chewy.com is always listening. But like how so i have cat food prescribed for bunk and the prescription had expired chewy you have to upload a photo of the prescription for some reason my vet will not email you prescriptions you have to go and pick them up in person and it's an eagle rock and i'm like shit i'm out of this cat food i don't want to go do that right now. I'm not going to call this in. And so I took a different prescription from them. This is really funny. I really hope I don't get it. I am a little nervous. You did a little Photoshop, a little Photoshop for that. No, I like, I did a cut and paste. I fully like cut a date.
Starting point is 00:13:06 A literal cut and paste. With scissors and glue, yes. Scissors and glue. And then took a picture of the cut and paste. Took a picture, ramped up that contrast, did a little white marker. This is a real catch me if you can moment. This is like you, Leo, in the hotel bathroom. Forging checks.
Starting point is 00:13:24 This is Ripley like cutting out a picture and gluing it on top of the other passport picture. I sent it in and then I noticed that the four that I changed to 24 for 2024 instead of 2023, which is what I said before, it was a little crooked and I was like,
Starting point is 00:13:40 oh, fuck. They're going to get me. They're going to get me. You think someone's going like, that four looks a little strange to me. Zoom in, zoom in, zoom in, zoom in. Enhance, enhance. That like, I can't imagine a world where a person working at Chewy.com would ever imagine a woman at home literally cutting and pasting. Veterinarian prescriptions. But what if they did? I'm surprised that that's even a thing.
Starting point is 00:14:08 I didn't even know prescription cat medicine or not medicine, but food existed. I have it too. Not me, personally, but for my cats. So, I guess I don't know. Just you guys be cool about this. Nobody report me to Chewy.
Starting point is 00:14:25 I'm a really loyal customer. I love Chewy a lot. And I don't want them to be mad at me. They might even just be really impressed by your dedication to your cat. That's true. And I'm not encouraging this behavior, though. I did just give you a step-by-step how-to. But I just was, you you know in a pinch and i felt like i needed to do it and i am filled with regret and but also that's what matters i got away with it so it's hard it's
Starting point is 00:15:00 hard i know it's hard it's hard as long as remorse, you know, I think they'll go easy on you. It's a victimless crime. It is. But if you guys, if I get arrested and go to court and a jury has to decide my fate, I hope it's people like you up there. Yeah. You can only hope. Can only hope.
Starting point is 00:15:21 So that was a little scary. And speaking of cats nice this week's movie is a quiet place day one starring an incredible cat well two cats playing one cat we'll get into that in a second a quiet place day one was directed by michael sarnoski written by by Michael Sarnoski and John Krasinski, starring Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Jaiman Honsu. It is in theaters now, and we have a guest with us today to talk about this film. She is a writer. She is the creator of the Netflix show Teenage Bounty Hunters and the new Netflix show The Decameron, which if you are listening to this on the day it comes out, will be out tomorrow. Oh, my freaking God. Your week is booked.
Starting point is 00:16:19 It is. Kathleen Jordan, thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. You're going to have to find time to be away from your children to watch my show. I know. I know. I am realizing that I'll just have to send them somewhere. Abandon them.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Yeah. I can put them somewhere. Someone will take them. Somewhere. Closet a box. Yeah. Closet a box. I do live at a church. They can take care of them. Yeah, I can put them somewhere. Someone will take them. Somewhere. Closet a box. Yeah, closet a box. I do live at a church. They can take care of them. Yeah, you do. I'm sure there's all sorts of cubicles. Oh, yeah, there's cubicles for sure. Hide and seek spots. Kathleen. Hi. I miss you. Hi. And I love you. I miss you too. It's so great to see all of your
Starting point is 00:17:03 beautiful faces in one box. We love you so much It's so great to see all of your beautiful faces in one box. We love you so much. In little boxes. To be honest, all of our beautiful faces were in one box in real life. It wasn't a box. It was just the box of life. Very recently. A week ago.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Yes. For Silas's birthday. But we don't often get that opportunity. It was. It's true. Not at all. Very special. It's fun to be here.
Starting point is 00:17:21 It was very special. Besides having to drive all the way to Long Beach, has anything else scary happened to you this week? That wasn't scary. It was fun. It was fun to drive. Driving to Long Beach didn't scare me at all. Okay, good. Wow.
Starting point is 00:17:35 I was trying to think of what's been scary. And I feel like what is most scary is anything that's scary to my daughter, who's three and a half, because it really spooks her out. She's been having, when she goes to sleep, scary, she says that scary pictures are coming at her. Oh, no. I know. And so it's like, it's not, like, it's scary ideas, I guess. I don't know. She's very into scary things.
Starting point is 00:18:06 She's like leaning in but leaning out silas is also like very because kids like like to be scared like it's fun to be scared but then also of course they can't be too scared and right do you think that it's like pictures she's seen in a book like actual pictures that she's remembering or do you think that she's just like conjuring things in her brain she's conjuring it's the conjuring she's in the conjuring no i think she's coming up with stuff because she has a very active imagination and she really like she really likes spooky things i think i was telling emily this her her favorite thing right now she's obsessed with well she's obsessed with spooky weddings interesting what does that mean a concept we're all familiar with yeah the other day she was
Starting point is 00:18:52 sitting in the back of the car and she was like no one knows anything about anything and i was like oh my god that's so like profound and wise like how do i like respond in the perfect way and before i could come up with an answer she was like i'm the only one that knows about spooky but and proceed to talk about how she she's the only one she's the only one who knows about it she and she invented it it's yeah the weight of the world is on her shoulders she has to carry the idea and it's the idea is that is that it's people who are going to get married. And they are two people that are in love. And they hug each other. And they're going to be together forever.
Starting point is 00:19:31 But then there are also skeletons and witches at the wedding. So that's pretty scary. Yeah. The idea of a spooky wedding is new in our lives. But she's been talking about it. She's constantly talking about spooky weddings. When we try to get her ready for school, she won't do anything we say in the morning, but then she'll be like, oh my God, I've got to get to my spooky wedding.
Starting point is 00:19:51 Perfect. Perfect. Wow. So that's spooky. It's spooky to her, so it's spooky to me. That's very supportive of you. The only way I can get Silas out of the bath at night is to, I suddenly get very serious. Like I have to do it in the right way. I have to like really put on my little acting hat. But I'll like sometimes like interrupt a sentence and I'll go, Maui and Loki are coming out of the drain right now. Every night you do this?
Starting point is 00:20:19 Every single night. And he goes, and he looks at me and then he like leaps out of the bath. And he goes, mommy, looks at me and then he like leaps out of the bath. And it's the only, and he goes, mommy, tell them to get away. And I go, Maui and Loki, get away. This is my son. This is Maui from Moana and Loki from Marvel? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:36 What a team. What a team. When did Loki become a part of the conversation? So there are these like five minute Marvel books that are at the library. And so Silas is obsessed with like, he just looks at these superhero books. And so he knows who Loki is just from that. And also he watched Spidey Amazing Friends. And I think that Loki's shown up in that a few times.
Starting point is 00:20:59 But Maui and Loki, they are causing mischief and mayhem in our household all the time, all the time. And you got to like use it like a tool, you know? You can use that little fear like a tool some ways. Yeah, just a little bit. It loses its sharpness if you do it more than once a day or something like that. No, that's true. That would be a good way to get Sammy out of the bath to tell her that Loki is coming. She's not a big Tom Edison.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I've come around on Tom. Unless youleston. I've come around on Tom. I've come around on Tom. Oh my gosh. I'm a former Tom Hiddleston hater. Now I'll love her. Honestly, Loki. Loki, yeah. I loved him in Loki, yeah. That would
Starting point is 00:21:39 keep you in the bath. Yeah. I'd be like, my skin's getting pruney, but i guess i'll have to stay a little longer it's meeting you here oh my goodness so kathleen you saw this movie have you seen you've seen the other quiet place movies i have i'm guessing i. Did you like this one more, less, the same? This is number two of three for me. Okay. What's your ranking?
Starting point is 00:22:10 I would say number one is one, number two is three, and number three is two. Makes perfect sense. So if you're going to go in time order, three is one, one is two, and two is three. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah. Three is one, one is two, two is three. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You're following. Yeah, three is one, one is two, two is three. Exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:32 This one is kind of sweet. It's very sweet. It's kind of like darling. It was like a darling little movie. I mean, despite the death angels. Yeah. It was kind of like, it's really sentimental. Is it PG-13? It is PG-13, yes.
Starting point is 00:22:46 I do think it is less scary than the other ones. It is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who wrote and directed Pig, the Nicolas Cage movie. That's also very sweet and like the opposite of what you expect it to be. I feel like it was a movie that has a plot similar to john wick starring nicholas cage you think you're gonna get this very vengeful violent movie and it is also just kind of like a sweet little character study okay yeah i really liked this one as well my ranking i think is different just because i'm sorry i hate john krasinski so number one is last for me wow oh interesting too much John well and also two has Killian so that and two has Killian so two is one Killian two is one for me
Starting point is 00:23:32 three is two two is one two is one three is two one is three also wait this has Joseph Quinn in it that's the guy from Stranger Things right the last season of Stranger Things I remember really liking him and that and i feel like i've never seen him in anything i remember him like blowing up from that there was a time when instagram was like only joseph quinn was popping up on in that wig yes it was the wig to the point where i couldn't like locate him where i knew him from and i kept the entire time I was watching the movie, I was like, who is this guy? Who is this? This is someone's son. I kept saying, but it wasn't. It was just the guy in that wig. I think I like the wig. The wig's son. He's cute. He's cute. He's doing, he's doing a good job. Okay. Is he British? Or does that just sound like the name of someone who'd be British? He is British.
Starting point is 00:24:25 He is British and I had not seen that season of Stranger Things. I loved him in this. He's also going to be in Gladiator 2. So I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of him in the future. Great. Quinnheads.
Starting point is 00:24:42 Covered in oil. Future Quinnheads. Wielding a sword. Fantastic. A Quiet Place quiet place they won i'm gonna tell us some stats about it it has an 87 on rotten tomatoes 68 on metacritic 6.7 on imdb budget was 67 million so far it's made 220.7 million far, it's made $220.7 million. I think it's been in theaters for about a month. But still, that's really good. That's really good, yeah. And especially because we've talked about it's such a crowded horror summer.
Starting point is 00:25:14 There's like so many horror movies. Yeah, and Maxine hasn't been doing as well as they expected. And it's like, why not? Why not? Yeah. Quiet Place is like so much more blockbuster-y though, you know? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:27 It's Lupita. And it's a whole, well, I guess that Maxine's a whole franchise too. Yeah, that's true. That's true. Yeah, they're both third in a franchise. Third in a franchise. But PG-13 I think also helps. That's true.
Starting point is 00:25:39 When PG-13 more people are going. You can take your kids in the summer. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And I'm sure people do. It's why I won't be going to the Americana to watch movies. I won't do it anymore.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Too many kids. Oh, because there are too many kids? Every time I've been to the Americana, there's children. Really? Really, really. You know, they have baby days. They have like days at movie theaters where you just bring your baby. So Tim's brother. Too quiet place, day one. No, they took they
Starting point is 00:26:05 took their like they took their like three week old to furiosa sure no i mean if you've got little little earplugs for him or something why not just like just turn it around like a car seat you know make it face the back it's probably a very colorful movie an idea though at that point can you even like see color oh right you can't take it anything it's all black and white that's right tim and i the first movie we watched with sass when he's only a few days old was den of thieves which also was it i i didn't want to do this but i think i was delirious and tim wanted to watch it and it was just like machine gun shooting for like two and a half hours and i was like this can't this can't be good they're so small they they don't know they
Starting point is 00:26:52 don't know they don't know anything and then when they do they who knows like adelaide saw a still donald trump's bloody face and ear today like on the television and was like, what's that? Oh, hello. And like went off to another room. No clue. Better for them to see it at home, you know? That's right. Absolutely. I saw this movie moments after Donald Trump got shot.
Starting point is 00:27:20 I got the news and then went straight into Quiet Place day one and then got a little drunk in between screenings because I was seeing long legs afterwards. And so if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me tweet a lot about the cat in or not tweet stories of the cat in Quiet Place day one. I have so many cat questions for the cat owners. So I'm excited. i'm excited right now yeah we've got answers for you okay great they're not all like the one in this movie no i mean well just a broad one to kick it off before we get into the movie of all the cats in this chat who's most suited to acting in a feature film it's not mac and bunk right no no is it mabel it's either yeah it's probably mabel it is probably mabel because mabel is so
Starting point is 00:28:16 food motivated she's very food motivated and she's very like cuddly which i feel like she's like she wants to be around people like social yeah chichi right right here is the smartest but she's also a little bitch so i feel like she would like intentionally not do what you're asking probably mabel yeah mabel okay and who would be best in a quiet place situation where they have to be extremely quiet because that's also not mac and bunk bunk would die in one second because all he does he's just constantly maybe theo because he he's he's the least vocal of our cats he will pipe up every now and again but only when he feels very safe oh yeah this is so true all the cats would be dead so fast in this situation yeah wow my dog toughy would be fine she's's pretty quiet. Yeah, she is.
Starting point is 00:29:05 She'd be good. I haven't seen Tuffy in so long. I hate to brag, but she'd be good. She's an angel. Okay, thank you. I just didn't know where your cat stood. Yeah, I can't wait to get more into it about this cat.
Starting point is 00:29:21 Well, just a little bit of repeating this trivia, just because it's important to me, is that Lupita Nyong'o was afraid of cats before getting this cat. Well, just a little bit of repeating this trivia just because it's important to me is that Lupita Nyong'o was afraid of cats before getting this role. She asked if they could change it
Starting point is 00:29:31 so that it wasn't a cat. They said, they said no. And it's pretty essential that it's a cat. That's not a, that was not a
Starting point is 00:29:41 movable thing. It'd be so funny if it was like a dog or a rabbit and they just kept, I don't know what the specifics are yet, but it was like just movable thing. It'd be so funny if it was like a dog or a rabbit and they just kept, I don't know what the specifics are yet, but it was like just doing cat things. Very obviously like being a cat.
Starting point is 00:29:52 Chasing a little brat in the street. So she was very scared of them. So they had to do cat therapy where she basically was like slowly introduced to cats with cat professionals around that she could ask a lot of questions to. And slowly she got brave enough to touch one and she was petting another one. And before you know it, she's petting a whole
Starting point is 00:30:10 bunch of them. And now she really likes cats. Her life is so much better now. Yeah, that's true. She has cuddly opportunities. I like that the experts are there to answer questions as if her fear is predicated on not understanding what's going on right like if she if she just learned a little bit more than she'd be more comfortable like what sort of questions do you ask one of the quotes that i feel like you posted about was she was like i just feel like she was like suspicious of them and was like why like i don't understand what they're doing or why and so i watched an interview with her where she said she feels like they're just like mini lions like they're predators well did she have a bad experience as a child with cats because I feel
Starting point is 00:30:49 like I but that was really mean cats and so it took a long time for me to fuck you up yeah not all cats are the same no no my cats all the cats I knew growing up was like not all cats hashtag not all cats yeah they would bite your hand off if you tried to touch them yeah so oh god yeah some cats are mean so are some dogs that's true yeah that's true true true yeah the two cats that played the cat in this movie are named nico and schnitzel and they are cuties such cuties does that mean that one of them has makeup on to match the markings? How does that work? No, they're twins.
Starting point is 00:31:31 They're just actual twin cats. But the markings are so crazy. I didn't know cats could come out like that. We'll post a picture of them together and you can see for yourselves how similar they look. Do you think someone's like breeding Hollywood cats? Cats made for the screen? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:48 That's interesting. Yeah. That's a career path. That's a career path. To consider. It is. There they are. They're so cute.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Oh my gosh. So they look pretty similar. Wow. Really? Schnitzelel if you're out there I love you really cute he's a listener he's a listener
Starting point is 00:32:11 he's a listener okay shall we watch this trailer before we get into the recap yes okay I'm sorry. Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me!
Starting point is 00:32:47 Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me!
Starting point is 00:32:55 Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me!
Starting point is 00:33:03 Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Help me! Please! Please! Please! I oh this looks good i want to see this it's surprisingly good i think given that it's yeah the third in the series that we've seen a lot of stories being told in this world like it feels different and yeah well that's really smart to do it this way in the city was very smart yeah new characters Lupita Nyong'o is just like incredible yeah she's so good she's so good and she's going through something she's going through something dark yeah oh wow okay I'm really
Starting point is 00:34:24 glad that you got to see I know we okay i'm really glad that you got to see i know we'll get to it but that you got to see her her face of all the ashes because i when i was watching i can't stop thinking about do you get served up tiktok content if people of dermaplaning where people spray their face with the spray first and then they shave it off i don't but i have dermaplained and so i i haven't sprayed with a thing first but i it's just to show like how much fur you have on your face how much hair is getting off but it's all over tiktok where i feel like it's every ad supported thing maybe it's telling me that i have a beard. But you spray your face with this Santa spray, and then you shave it off, and you can see how much fur you're getting off.
Starting point is 00:35:13 And that's what she looks like to me. So satisfying. So satisfying. Yeah. You know what? Weirdly, late night on TikTok, I get more zip-popping. I don't get them ever. But if I ever look at TikTok at like 11 p.m., it's like I know what you're up to. Maybe you want to watch some zits. That's interesting. It changes based on like the time of day, you think?
Starting point is 00:35:36 I really think it does. I really think the algorithm is different. That makes sense. It shows me a lot of plastic surgery at night. Really trying to get into those before sleep thoughts. Yeah. Feel insecure about yourself. It's always like, come with me while I get like chin liposuction.
Starting point is 00:35:54 And I'm just like, gotta be there. The trend of like seven days before my nose job, six days before my nose job. Five days before my nose job. I've seen those ones. Oh, God. Heaven help us. Heaven help us. Wow. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Well, I'm very excited about this, and I do really want to watch it. And because it's PG-13, I feel like I might be able to convince Tim to watch it with me, maybe not until 2025. Take Silas to a little daytime screening. I know. Baby day. Everybody can go to baby day. No, Silas would.
Starting point is 00:36:27 That would actually crush his spirit. That would crush his spirit. You can't do that. That's fair. All right. Should we get into it? Yes, we should. Let's do it, baby.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Let's do it. In the past few years, I have hit a point where I only want to be wearing clothes that are comfortable. It happened. It happened to me. But you know what? I still also want to look cute. And these are two desires that are often extremely opposing. And I don't want to have to sacrifice. I want both. I want comfort and I want to feel cute and confident. And guess what? Skims has freaking done it again with their soft lounge collection. I am currently very, very obsessed with, I have the soft lounge tank and boxer set. Okay. This tank, it's a great little rib tank. Classic. You can wear it every day. You can pair it with jeans.
Starting point is 00:37:17 You can wear it out in the world, or you can wear it with this little boxer short that is so comfortable. It is super, super soft, lightweight rib. They're great. I also truly have been for years stealing Joel's boxer briefs to wear as sleepwear and loungewear. And guess what? That ain't cutting it. I'm not feeling too cute in those. I'm not feeling too comfortable. But Desperate Times, however, Desperate Times know more because Skims has done it you too can get on board with this you can see just how cute and comfortable you can be shop the skims soft lounge collection at skims.com now available in sizes extra extra small through 4x and if you haven't yet be sure to let them know that we sent you after you place order, select podcast in the survey and select too scary didn't watch in the drop down menu that follows. I used to love back to
Starting point is 00:38:12 school shopping so much that I would tell my mom that I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up because I just loved getting all the things that I needed that I would use every day in class. that I would use every day in class. I still to this day have nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number two pencils. Really scary stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need notebooks or number two pencils anymore. But this fall, there is something that I will be using every day and would be terrified to be caught without. And that's Raycon's best-selling everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks every day, and so I need earbuds that I can rely on to listen to all my favorite podcasts. And I know you guys listen to podcasts as well, so you know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon black because that's my vibe, but they come in other cool colors as well, like forest
Starting point is 00:39:15 green and brush violet, but my favorite thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours and they have a new quick charge function. So 10 minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of battery life. Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a long morning walk. You forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode of a podcast. It's only going to take you 10 minutes. It's incredible. So go to buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get up to 40% off everything on Raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary. Buyraycon.com slash too scary. in uh the world of a a young beautiful woman played by lupita nyong'o she is quite beautiful i don't need to say it again but sometimes it's worth saying yeah um and her name is sam and she's forlorn you can't tell why um we follow her around the streets of new york for a moment
Starting point is 00:40:41 is that right no it i think, has like a wide shot of New York and just some text lets us know how many decibels come out of New York constantly. It's like the volume of a constant scream. Which is, I feel like, a little unnecessary. We all know New York
Starting point is 00:41:00 is pretty loud. Yeah. It also felt, like, not accurate. Yeah, it's not that and then you immediately cut into a room where lupita nyong'o is inside a building so you're like it's not loud where she seems pretty quiet in here yeah so she's living in court she's living a quiet life and she's sitting in a circle with a bunch of people who look quite ill we come to learn that she's in hospice care oh that she is dying yes they're doing a sort of like pump up activity with her and the other cancer patients where the guy leading them his name is something ruben ruben but the actor is alex wolf who was
Starting point is 00:41:44 also in pig oh from hereditary yes and hereditary he's really good he's really good in this i loved him in this role it felt like different for him yeah he's sort of like the like cool teacher version of um the guy that works at hospice that's like trying to keep everybody's spirits up oh what, what a job. Yeah, it's a fun one. And they're going around and he asks if Sam, would be this character, wants to share.
Starting point is 00:42:11 And she shares a poem. And it is a very grim poem about how everyone's dying and one of her friends in the circle always rocks around with poop in his pants. I think the poem is called Shit. And she's, yeah, she's just like, everything's shit everything's shit that guy smells like shit because he shit his pants yeah i wake up i feel like shit i go to bed i feel like shit it's just like very yeah sad it's a sad time she's not feeling great no and so the group closes and ruben in an effort
Starting point is 00:42:43 to kind of like get her excited about something is like, come on, we're going into town. It's gonna be great. We're gonna see a show. And she's like, fuck you. I'm dying. I don't want to do anything, which can't blame her for that. And he's like, come on, it'll be fun. And she's like, fine, I'll come with you only on the condition that we get pizza at the end. And he's like, we're not getting pizza. And she's like, fine, I'll come with you only on the condition that we get pizza at the end. And he's like, no, we're not getting pizza. And she's like, we're getting pizza. So those are the terms. She wants pizza.
Starting point is 00:43:09 You're going to say no to this dying woman's wish to get pizza in New York City. There's pizza on every block. It's the only thing. Get pizza. She wants a specific pizza. Yeah, she wants pizza from. Patsy's. Yeah, from Patsy's in Harlem.
Starting point is 00:43:23 Oh. Because, yeah, he's like like we ate pizza last night and she's like not the pizza that i want yeah so he's kind of like all right we'll think about it like maybe not to brag but there's a patsies opening up down the street from me so nice it does a little bit like i didn't realize that there's like a live-in hospice situation that's like that grim. I had no kind of no idea. I've been around people who are on in hospice care and it's like at home hospice care.
Starting point is 00:43:52 But she, this lady has got no body. Like she is really, truly alone. It's her and her cat. It's so sad. And that's it. And they look, it's like a very dingy, sad place. Yeah. That's so sad. And that's it. And they look, it's like a very dingy, sad place. Yeah. Oh, that's depressing.
Starting point is 00:44:08 So then before they leave, she decides she's going to go, but she goes to her room first to swap out her fentanyl patch. Ruben is asking her like what her pain level is at. So we know that she deals with a lot of pain, and this is the medication she needs to be able to move through the world. And she gets ready to go and puts her little cat on a leash, and they get on the bus to head to Manhattan to see a show. And it turns out it's a marionette puppet show, and she feels like she has been tricked yeah oh no which is also a little bit like why couldn't he take her to something better
Starting point is 00:44:52 i guess i guess that's just what what they can afford i think most of the people are like old in their 70s and 80s so it's other people from hospice care as well and so that's was you know what most people wanted to do i guess yeah i guess so but it's kind of cool this show comes on and she experiences a moment of childlike wonder um we like get to access a little bit of hope and like happiness and lightness of spirit and her she's watching and the puppeteer is manipulating the puppet and kind of cool it blows up this balloon and then it pops in the middle of nowhere and it's very loud and kind of the first scary moment of the movie yeah but it's sweet there's something sweet about it i'm like i feel like i'm gonna be saying that a lot there's
Starting point is 00:45:42 a lot of sweet touching moments yeah but she kind of like it all lights up her face she's enjoying the show yeah and at one point there's a little kid in the row in front of her that turns back to look at her because she has a cat and obviously kid wants to pet this cat and the kid's dad is jaiman hansu who is in a quiet place part two and so we know oh right we know where he ends up i guess i won't say we'll talk about it more at the end it doesn't i mean it doesn't really matter but he is a character that we know from this world wait he's in A Quiet Place 2, which is... Yes. Takes place third. Takes place second. Takes place third.
Starting point is 00:46:30 That was Ari. Takes place third. Yes. Two is three. Yeah. Two is three. One is two. And three is one.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Great. But this is one of two for Jaiman. One of two. One of two. Right. And his one is three of three yes perfect exactly we're all following yes no but he's in it i feel great he's in it okay great and so this is his and so him we see him and his wife and his son are sitting in front of Lupita. She introduces the cat, says her cat's name is Frodo. And the little boy gets to pet him.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Frodo is such a good boy. And then I think the show finishes and she goes next door to the bodega. We see a bodega cat, which I liked. Two little cats doing a... The shop owner says you can't have a cat in here. She does a funny little side eye at the cat that is in there. And then as they're in there,
Starting point is 00:47:30 you hear a lot of police sirens. And then I think even like army looking vehicles drive by, something is clearly going on, but they don't seem too concerned about it because it's New York. It's New York, baby. Crazy shit happens. It's a York, baby. Crazy shit happens. It's a city, baby.
Starting point is 00:47:46 Baby, it's a city. It always sounds like a scream. Constant scream. And then she heads back to the theater, and Ruben is there looking pretty stressed on the phone. He's gotten a call from the hospice center. They're being told they need to come back. I think the hospice center is like outside of the city somewhere.
Starting point is 00:48:06 I mean, they took a bus, so it can't be that far. Yeah. Like maybe an hour outside of the city or something. Yeah. By the way, just to pause for the cat, up until this point, it's been a complete horror movie for a cat. Oh, yeah. The cat had to get on a leash. It had to get in the bus.
Starting point is 00:48:23 It had to go sit in a marionette show like this cat has had a horrible day and nothing has started yet oh no yes already either of my cats would already be having the worst day of their lives themselves yeah yeah it would be completely crazy and this cat's just chilling just relaxed yeah no meows no freaking out like presumably like a servant or a yeah yeah like trained in some way as a service animal but oh i thought that was just a joke no i think it's a real thing or like an emotional support i mean i thought she was like it's a service cat i don't know maybe it maybe it was a joke but i'm wrong it's a very chill cat yeah it's an extremely chill cat i'd have seen people with cats outside yes like at
Starting point is 00:49:06 a coffee shop with a cat on a leash it's rare but some cats are more chill when you see that though don't you always kind of go like that's not what's best yeah well when we were going we went to long beach last week to see henley it's afterwards we're walking back to our car and we saw we're like walking up perpendicular to the main street and on the main street we saw a bengal cat which are like very expensive fancy cats really really smart walk by without a leash without it just like down it's like not a cat that you see just like being a street cat these are like very fancy cats so we were we you know we saw a cat we got excited me and joel were like oh let's go see what's up that cat and we saw this cat was on a walk with its like family it was like a mom and a
Starting point is 00:49:49 kid right walking and this cat would like trail behind and look at stuff and then like run up and walk alongside them some more and then like do its own thing and then run and walk alongside them this cat seemed to be having a great time and it wasn't even on a leash it was just like doing its thing whoa wow that's what my cats would do growing up. They would follow us on walks. Yeah. Mine would do that growing up, I guess. They would just assume we were leaving and they were like, well, they feed me. So in Manhattan, but not in Manhattan, not in Manhattan, not in suburb.
Starting point is 00:50:16 I really don't. I know nothing about. I don't know why I'm like, that's fine. I don't know anything. Maybe that is what's best. I mean, I just get nervous about dogs when I see cats because I'm scared of dogs. Yeah, for sure. And I feel like that is my main concern is like they're going to get attacked by a dog.
Starting point is 00:50:34 I think cats like to like wander and do their own thing and walk inside, outside. I don't think they like to be brought around. On a leash. On a leash or in your bag or on your person. Or like on a boat like i they're definitely speaking of tiktok there have been like tiktoks of like cats on boats and that i'm like that cat doesn't want to be on that boat like there's a man like sailing across the pacific ocean like with his cat they don't like my cat just threw up oh no mac it's hairball season
Starting point is 00:51:02 summer it is hairball season we have one this morning actually there's a season for it well it's just hot they get they're sheddy and they groom themselves a lot and then they get hairballs I was just thinking we're due for a big brush brushing session with my cats just get as much of it off as you do them all at once you have to because the
Starting point is 00:51:20 second you start brushing one of them the others all come because they're excited they want they like it. They want to get brushed. And so then they start getting in each other's business and hissing at each other and trying to get in the way. And so it needs to be me and Joel. We each need to have a brush and we need to be like managing the cats.
Starting point is 00:51:39 It's a whole thing. I love that. Okay. So yeah, Ruben's gotten the call. They need to go back. And she's like, you said we're getting pizza. We got to get pizza. And he's like, something's going on.
Starting point is 00:51:48 They want us back. And so she gets on the bus, kind of sulking. She's mad. She's like, fine, her and Frodo, get back on the bus. It reminded me of the thing that he said at the beginning. Ruben was like, we're going to New York for the last. And he said something about it being for the last time and she was like last time i was in new york was the last time like that there's a sense
Starting point is 00:52:10 going on this trip that she's kind of saying goodbye she has to say goodbye again and she already did it and so i think she's like i want to do it on my term so her anger like feels legit because it's like i wanted to come in and get pizza. This is my last time doing anything I want to do and I'm dying and I'm saying goodbye. Yeah. Yeah. And you're like not letting me. You're getting in the way.
Starting point is 00:52:31 Yeah. Yeah. And then these fucking aliens really get in the fucking way. And then there's some fucking aliens. Yeah. And they really get in the way. So everyone like runs to the back of the bus. Something is going on.
Starting point is 00:52:44 She's listening to music in headphones. So she kind of doesn't notice at first, but then, you know, finally notices and looks at the back of the bus. And we see just all these meteor looking things flying through the sky and one crashing very close to the bus. Explodes the bus windows. There's all this ash and debris in the air. It just gets into this moment of chaos where you can't see anything. She's stumbling out of the bus. It's madness. And it's like that ear ringing thing happening where it's like, you're ringing, but felt like new and cool. Like it was done really well. I was like,
Starting point is 00:53:23 really like genuinely paying attention the whole time it was interesting yeah and be kind of beautiful yeah and yeah these these alien guys are crashing we don't quite see them yet yeah and we've lost frodo frodo is on the side she's not holding him anymore but you know the other things are. It doesn't seem like the number one priority right in this exact moment. And, you know, there's people screaming. She's looking, but it's hard to see because the ash is making kind of like a dense fog. But she's like seeing what looks like things taking out humans, like launching at them, knocking them down. There's like a car that's flying through the air. People are dying for sure. And at one point she tries to hide under, like crawl under a car for protection from whatever these things are. Cause she can, she can like hear that there's definitely like creatures. There are creatures. And as she crawls under the car, a man grabs her ankle and is like, please help me, help me. What?
Starting point is 00:54:29 And the back half of the car like crushes down. Like either one of the creatures jumped on top of that or something happened where. I think the tire came out. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. And then. It's like. So she's, her ankle gets pinned and she's trying to get out and then we see
Starting point is 00:54:50 there's a hole in the front tire as well so the front of the car is like more slowly falling down on top of her oh very good like tension like you're so stressed one thing that's really nice is you never ever think that she's gonna scream she is doing such a good job being quiet you are obviously you go to the movie like understanding the premise and you see like the movie teach the premise because a guy screams and then immediately is attacked and like eviscerated but she's like really the horror that she's doing without any sound is pretty extraordinary. God,
Starting point is 00:55:26 she's so good. She's so good. And she gets out at the last second, gets her ankle free and she's, it's not like broken or anything. She it's, she's limping a little bit, but she's still able to,
Starting point is 00:55:38 to run. And I think at some point someone knocks her over or something. She just gets knocked unconscious, right? Yeah, she's knocked unconscious and she can't. Yeah. And then she wakes up inside the puppet theater with Jaiman Honsu. And he's putting his hand over her mouth. Yeah, she coughs because of the like ash. And covers her mouth and is like does the little shush
Starting point is 00:56:07 face no so he's figured it out right away he knows what's going on thing is here in new york they figured out real quick yeah in a quiet place part one they still haven't figured it out 18 months later i believe oh really they figure it out instantly know. Like, I don't know what. They're just smart. They're New Yorkers. They're world-weary people. No, but I didn't realize that in part one, that's what's happening. I guess I'd forgotten that part.
Starting point is 00:56:34 I thought they knew. I thought they knew, too. That was like, had they set up their whole little farmhouse? Yeah, they had a whole farmhouse. Oh, yes. You're right. You're right. You're right.
Starting point is 00:56:41 But, okay. You're right. When you're right, you're right. Because they do. They do have their little sand trail. They're right, you're right. But, okay, you're right. When you're right, you're right. Because they do. I'll say it. They do have their little sand trail. They're being very quiet. Yeah, and they're like, you know, they all speak in sign language and stuff.
Starting point is 00:56:50 I think that they're still learning the rules a little bit. They don't know anything about the creatures other than that, I guess. Right, that's why they have their board. Yeah, I was thinking about the board, the whiteboard. And they don't know the water block sound. Sure, sure, sure. We're learning it with them it's a tricky needle that's read where it's like everyone's already seen the first part of the franchise how
Starting point is 00:57:10 do you do it yeah yeah i guess i i can appreciate them being like look let's just get right to it because nobody wants to watch us teach people how to do this again yeah yeah it's a little bit like how in part two we're seeing the kids, because significantly older, playing themselves before. What are you going to do? What are you going to do? That's the movies, baby. What can you do? You just got to throw up your hands and go, sorry.
Starting point is 00:57:31 That's funny. What do you want me to do? And I will say, I suppose instinctually, you maybe wouldn't know you have to be silent, but if there's creatures around, I would be quiet. Yeah. Right, right. I'm not making noise. I would be quiet.
Starting point is 00:57:44 If I can help it. if i can help it if i can help it being in a city versus being on like a farm there would be much more opportunity to see people making noise being killed and so making mistakes making mistakes that's a really good i think you would learn faster they've got a lot of at-bats with the, yeah. Okay, so they're in the puppet theater and... Sorry, I'm like trying to lead the conversation and not knowing what I'm going to say next. Do it. Go for it. Well, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:58:17 Okay, so they're in the puppet theater and the whole theater is full of people. It's like... Oh, okay. There's like a hundred people crouched in there being very quiet it's it's really a devastating sight like there's just people like quietly sobbing like this is the worst day of everybody's life and they just can't make a sound and so it's just all these people in a room like so scared and grieving
Starting point is 00:58:46 probably have just lost people and just like have to be quiet to not die and as she's led into this main gathering room where everyone is she sees Ruben and like this look of relief comes across both of their faces and they have this hug and I burst into tears. This part really got me. And I remember in A Quiet Place part two, something about this particular depiction of like an apocalyptic event. Really? I can,
Starting point is 00:59:21 it just feels really real. And I get really emotional imagining how you would feel in this situation and I think they do a good job like showing us people going through this horrible horrible thing and just like how alone you and scared you would feel and then waking up with a stranger that you recognize from earlier but you don't know him and then like being reunited with someone you actually know how like relieved you would feel. What a relief. Yeah, what a relief. Just like stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:59:53 It just really got me. Oh my God. No, no. It makes me. It's because all you can do is want like the people you love close to you but like you can't control that when that's like so out of your control it's terrifying it's the worst thing and it like ups the stakes it's like going to summer camp or like all of a sudden everything's dialed up to 11 yeah so it's exactly like it's just like summer camp but it's overall thinking yeah hell summer but how like you like you like
Starting point is 01:00:23 make a friend like at the beginning of the day because you guys were in the same bunk or whatever and by the end of the day you would like take a bullet
Starting point is 01:00:28 for that person and it's like that where it's like it's summer camp stakes yes you guys know what I'm talking about
Starting point is 01:00:33 yes Halchella Halchella yeah Halchella it's the same with Halchella and we see that Ruben has Frodo
Starting point is 01:00:40 and so Frodo is reunited and they have really nice sweet sweet little cuddles. Anytime they she gets to pick him up again, she'll she holds him and gives him a lot of kisses on his head. It's really cute, which really makes you think about the actress. Yeah. Well done. Lupita comes so far. Well done. She really sells it. But it's like she's really burying her face in that fluffy fur also this cat is really cute really like yep really really cute roundy face not too big ears a little bit chunky
Starting point is 01:01:12 a little bit small little snowy paws one oh that's a really cute cat yeah really really cute i really like he's a very good boy i'm always hooked he's an angel and we hear military helicopters overhead announcing stay like stay quiet and they can be as loud as they want because they are in the air. Well, that's where the things came from, so I still wouldn't even be so sure. That's true. That's true. And we do kind of see them now from afar, like, crawling at the top of buildings
Starting point is 01:01:56 and, like, trying to get at the noise from the helicopters, but they can't reach them. And they're, yeah, just telling telling everyone stay stay silent stay indoors until we figure out evacuation and stay off the bridges for some reason because they're well we're gonna find out in a second yeah yeah definitely find out and i think the commotion of this scares frodo and he's he runs and tries to get out of this building and runs to the front door and he does a little meow I think he's like
Starting point is 01:02:31 he does and I think it's his only vocal moment in the whole movie yeah he does a lot and he's scratching at the door and Jimen Honsu and Lupita Nyong'o are like holding their breath like fuck fuck fuck fuck she's trying to getong'o are like holding their breath like, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. She's trying to get him, but he's like holding her back.
Starting point is 01:02:48 And we, I think, hear one of the alien creatures approaching. And then there's some loud sound down the street. I guess maybe the helicopters, maybe something. street i guess i love new york baby maybe the helicopters maybe something but then we just see hundreds of these alien creatures like stampeding through the street towards that sound yeah i mean i think you're right i think you would figure it out faster in new york city like i do think a place where there's a lot of sound you would be like you would at least try that theory out you know yeah definitely nice clean. Nice, clean logic. Nice, clean logic.
Starting point is 01:03:27 But right before the stampede, Frodo, his paw is up like he's about to open the door and you see the outline of one of the creatures and it's so close on the other side of the pain, the window pain, and it really feels like he's about to get chomped. But saved by the bell saved by freaking bell but yeah there's there's hundreds of these things so like in the other
Starting point is 01:03:50 movies we were dealing with like five of them now it's a ton this is a lot more and then oh the noise is explosions and because now they once all the run, they run upstairs to get a look at what's going on. And we see that the bridges are being bombed. Yeah. Wow, would they do that this quickly? It's like, they're like, oh, aliens are here, let's bomb the bridges. They want to contain it. Yeah, just like.
Starting point is 01:04:18 Yeah, contain it. Yeah, best as they can. It's confusing, like, though, because, so just to take a step back and do our day minus one this day one the aliens are on their planet and they're each getting into their own spaceships by themselves yeah i don't know like are they getting into their own little like mini cars by themselves it seems like they're small maybe they're free balling they're just free balling through space they're the ship? Raw-dogging it through space.
Starting point is 01:04:47 Raw-dogging. Or like they jumped from somewhere and just kind of cannonballed down. I don't know. Oh, maybe the space, yeah, the ship is up in the air. They come in with quite a lot of force. And they're fiery. Like they're catching, everything's catching on fire all over the city. They're not just landing. They're like causing a lot of commotion.
Starting point is 01:05:07 So maybe they're inside of a space rock that cracks open when they hit the Earth. Yeah. And what do we think they want? Sorry, I just want to clear up their logic really quickly. What are they doing? I don't know what the hell they're doing, and we'll find out.
Starting point is 01:05:24 And I guess we know from Quiet Place 2, so this isn't a spoiler they can't swim so why did they come to a planet that's 70 water this is really silly and also we can talk about what they eat later but it's not like they're attacking people because they're hungry right they're attacking just because they want them dead are they just annoyed with the noise they like don't like noise and they're just like, that's annoying. Stop. They just want peace and quiet. Just stop.
Starting point is 01:05:48 And then we can all live in harmony. If everybody calmed down. Yeah. Yes. Everyone just chill out. Okay. Sorry. So they're on the roof.
Starting point is 01:05:56 And then there's a newcomer person who is being too loud. She's crying. And Jaiman is trying to, is being too loud. She's crying. And Jaiman is trying to, everyone else is on the roof and they're seeing her. And it's very tense because it's like, we just saw these guys zoom by. Jaiman's son is down the stairwell and is seeing his dad.
Starting point is 01:06:22 And he says to him, Jaiman says to his son, run, go away. He has to take care of the situation this person will not shut the fuck up he's like what are we gonna do we're dying whatever he's saying and jiman is just trying to get him to be quiet but unfortunately the king breaks his neck like knocks him against the wall and um it's unclear when he looks back at where his son is it's unclear if like maybe his son saw him or he's worried he did um but he like just kills somebody which is like that's a bummer it's a real bummer it's a real bummer of a moment lupita and sam and
Starting point is 01:06:59 ruben are watching right there also and they all just kind of share this look of like fuck yeah like god but it's like something that's so nice about this movie that like there's a real clean clear enemy like there's no like infighting there doesn't need to be like he just killed someone and everyone's like i get it like you had to do it sucked yeah sorry you saved the rest of our lives like it's kind of nice that they all understand each other. There's like a real, there's like real humanity at the center of it. Well, also, you couldn't like argue anything else. You can't make noise.
Starting point is 01:07:34 So even if you are like wanting to fight back, like, how are you going to fight back? Like, you can't make noise. Then they go in back in the building for the night that you're going to sleep in there overnight and ruben and sam are sitting across from each other and she writes on a notebook that she has a little note to him and says i'm going to harlem and he gives her a look that asks what? Why? A lot of facial acting in this film. Incredible stuff. And she
Starting point is 01:08:12 writes, getting pizza. Oh yeah, baby. And he laughs and then he realizes that she is serious. I mean, she's already dying. Yeah. Yeah, she just wants pizza. Yep. And at this point, it's already dying. Yeah. Yeah, she just wants pizza. Yep. And at this point, it's clearly just about, like, getting it.
Starting point is 01:08:28 It doesn't even matter if it's good because you can't imagine that someone's going to serve you a hot slice. Yeah. Everyone's a little bit busy running away from the island. And it's probably a little bit about, like, just having some autonomy before you die. Yeah, just doing something. Just having a goal that's not like focusing on aliens yeah just like waiting out here to not die a little bit sooner than you otherwise know you're gonna die like yeah yeah exactly so a backup generator turns on at some
Starting point is 01:08:58 point like the power goes out and the backup generator turns on and it's really loud and ruben runs to shut it off which this and jiman in the last scene i'm like i guess i understand why we're running towards the things making sound in an attempt to shut them up but i would also never do that and be like if you're making a sound i'm crouching in a corner away from you. Yeah. Agree. Agree. But they're very brave. Well, but it's like, Jimen's protecting his son and Ruben's protecting her.
Starting point is 01:09:31 Oh. Even though she's going to die. It's kind of sweet. But yeah, it's like, it's not your instinct. It would not be my instinct. No. To run.
Starting point is 01:09:40 He runs towards the generator. He turns it off. Everything's good. But everything's not good because i believe he rips his shirt on the generator it makes quite a loud that's the loudest shirt i've ever heard i know compared to the generator well and then and then the other thing i'm thinking which to be fair they don't know this yet probably but louder constant noises are good for them i know i was gonna say like actually that's, especially in New York where there's certainly
Starting point is 01:10:05 going to be louder noises somewhere else. Yeah. Yes, because it would mask your noise and allow you to kind of talk under the thing. But yeah,
Starting point is 01:10:13 I don't think you'd be thinking that far ahead. And it seems like they're not bothered by inorganic noise. Well, I guess they are because, like, you can smash a bottle
Starting point is 01:10:21 and it makes them. Yeah. But it seems like they understand the logic of noise where it's like if something is just constantly loud it doesn't bother them but then if it's i don't know right but i guess they didn't know this yet to your point yeah and so a creature comes and takes out ruben ruben dies oh, no. That was too soon. That was too soon. Then Sam takes Frodo, I think
Starting point is 01:10:50 the next day or maybe right then, and walks over to the bodega, grabs an I Heart New York tote, some cat food, some supplies, all this obviously very quietly. Not prescription cat food. Not prescription cat food not prescription cat food
Starting point is 01:11:07 over-the-counter stuff and starts her journey towards harlem she stops by this water fountain once she has the cat food and like very quietly opens a cat tin or a little tin of food which is stressful it makes a little noise every little noise is stressful but she gets it open and frodo is eating away very cute really cute but also making making making some noise but it doesn't matter um because there's a loud fountain next to them and as frodo is, Sam notices two small children crouched in the fountain. Oh, God. With the water, like, pouring around them. I don't like that.
Starting point is 01:11:53 She walks in. She ducks in. And she gives them a candy bar to share. And they're very thankful. And I feel like that, like, a little small act of kindness and friendship. Like, they're immediately like a pod together. Okay. And so then they journey on.
Starting point is 01:12:10 So she has two small children friends. I would not want to be in a pod with two small children in a circumstance like this. I mean, I don't think I'd ever want to be in a pod with two small children, but I certainly in like a noise situation apocalypse, I'd be like, would you prefer a child or a cat? What, Sammy, what kind of question is that? You're talking to the wrong person. Obviously a cat. But the liability.
Starting point is 01:12:37 What about a six-year-old? A six-year-old. I get like a two-year-old is not it, but like a six-year-old you want over a cat. Yeah, something that can understand to be quiet. You can't control the cat at all. Yeah, I suppose so. I mean, the cat would die right away, probably. Yeah, bunk would. That's the only problem
Starting point is 01:12:54 with this movie, is that Frodo really keeps showing up right when you are looking for him. He's really right there, and it's no problem. And he doesn't get immediately killed. Yeah. He is pretty quiet. he does little tiptoe around pretty quiet but so okay now she's she's with the children and we've got frodo and again there are military helicopters overhead now announcing for everyone to make their way south to the seaport and that we will be evacuating
Starting point is 01:13:23 people by boat because they figured out that they can't swim so again a lot of figured it out like in like a day really quick but again this is like over a million people that would be observing them in a small space and chances are that someone made a noise and they chased somebody into water or something and like drowned like again if it'd be easy enough as long you just need to see it happen yeah it's central other intelligence is centralized yeah so she takes the kids and they start heading that direction and we see some other survivors kind of coming out of rubble and alleyways, also hearing this announcement. And so everyone's kind of funneling together to walk towards the boatyard. And Lupita sees this and kind of says goodbye to the kids because she still wants to go to Harlem.
Starting point is 01:14:23 But she's like, OK, they can now go on this short journey to safety. It's kind of nice. She's like, she keeps trying to like die. She keeps trying to like say goodbye. So she's like, okay, everyone's going to salvation and I'm going in the opposite direction.
Starting point is 01:14:42 The kids are thankful. Also, they're making a lot of noise. The people that are walking, they sure are walking with loud feet. Oh, no. It seems like everyone's really trying to be quiet, but eventually it becomes like
Starting point is 01:14:55 probably over a hundred people walking all right next to each other. And that just is not something you can do completely soundlessly through Rebel. This is reminding me my my mom is a really light sleeper so it was always like her getting enough sleep is was always like it you know a challenge i mean still is for her i just don't live with her anymore but when i was growing up like we would have to be after a moment to, we'd have to be so quiet in the house.
Starting point is 01:15:25 So quiet. Because the smallest noise would wake her up. So I got so good at like turning a doorknob really, really slow. And like opening. And then like closing my door really, really slow. And I have this really vivid memory of one time, I guess not closing it quietly enough this is my parents are lovely people but not closing the door quietly enough and somehow my dad who was better at this than any of us because he'd been living with it the most like appears i don't know how he got to me
Starting point is 01:15:58 so quickly appears next to me he just comes right when and he just goes. Literally the movie. The shush finger. Literally the movie. And I just, I have such a, I'm sure he doesn't remember. I have such a vivid memory of that exact moment. So look, I get it. Sometimes you think you're being really quiet and you don't even, your quiet is too loud to somebody else. Oh God. Did your mom, when she was was awoken was she not in a good mood she like i heard that door no i mean i think like the next morning i feel like it'd be like oh i didn't sleep well it was like you know like it wasn't she didn't like tear tear through the house no she wouldn't like get out of bed and come scream like you woke me up no yeah um it was just like you know she was a school teacher she needed to get her sleep we all need to get her
Starting point is 01:16:43 sleep i get it sleep is really important. Sleep is important. Sleep is really important. And it's like, if all you have to do is shut a door as quietly as possible, that's what you should do. But, you know, sometimes you get it wrong. That's all I'm saying. Well, the people of New York City were getting it wrong. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:56 I feel like as a child, I also spent a lot of time trying to be quiet, mostly because I was sneaking from my room down to my parents' room. And they lived on the opposite side of the house, like on the first floor. And I lived on the second floor, so far away. And they'd be watching TV in the living room. And I would sneak down the stairs and go through like an office and a dining room
Starting point is 01:17:16 and another room and then down a hallway to their room. Just absolutely like banging into everything, just like knocking things over. Just being so quiet. Like, they can't hear me. They can't hear me. They can't hear me. Just being so quiet. Like they can't hear me. They can't hear me. They can't hear me. They can't hear me. They can't hear me. And then once I'm in their room, they can't kick me out because that's kind of like the unspoken rule is that like once I'm asleep in here, they can't kick me out. That's so sweet. But if they catch me like midway,
Starting point is 01:17:40 then they're going to be like, you have to go back to your room. What like broken logic? then they're going to be like, you have to go back to your room. What like broken logic? I think that my mom just felt too sorry for me by the time I was like asleep on their floor. She worked so hard to be so quiet. She really earned it. All I'm saying is that maybe a six-year-old would be really good at being with you in a quiet place. Maybe.
Starting point is 01:18:02 Maybe. Yeah. If you're a new parent, a bad day means you either ran out of coffee, diapers, patience, or all of the above. Stocking up on cold brew and deep breaths are all you, but at least Hello Bello's got your baby's butt covered. Hello Bello believes all families

Starting point is 01:20:23 So Sam is starting to look pretty uneasy. She's noticing that, you know, the more people that converge into this flow of people, the louder it's getting. And sure enough, we notice a couple little aliens crawling on the buildings around, and then they attack the crowd. And there's like a almost trampling scene because
Starting point is 01:20:48 lupita was already walking against the crowd and now everybody starts running as she's like going the other trying to go to the other direction and trampling is like one of my biggest fears i hate it so much that's a really good fear to have because it happened. Yeah. It's so scary. That's the worst part about trampling is like, it's completely illogical. It just would fucking, I'd be so mad to die that way. Just like out of like.
Starting point is 01:21:13 So annoying. I'm just trying to stand up. Just let me stand up. Stupid fear. Oh, it's really scary. Really bad. Have you been to concerts where you were like lifted up by the pressure of
Starting point is 01:21:23 people around you? Oh my God. I would not do well with that. No. That's my worst nightmare. Not do well. I've been to concerts where you um were like lifted up by the pressure of people around you oh my god i would not do well with that you would hate that not do well i've been to a lot like that where it's like i was at a nine inch nails concert like really towards the front and there was a lot of pressure all around me and i felt my feet lift off the ground um and you kind of like are asking well well, you're not asking for it, but a little bit like depending on like geographically where you are at a metal show, you like are kind of asking for it. It was really scary. Was it really scary? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:55 Yeah. No, it seems very scary. And it's probably part of why I don't like going to concerts. Yeah, I don't blame you. Well, that and the music. concerts yeah i don't blame you well that music so she loses frodo in this again frodo runs and look at this cat actor i've just changed my background to a photo of like it's like a crowded set and she's really holding this cat and like running through a crowd of people and that cat is really real do we think it's real right there i think so i mean it seems real the whole
Starting point is 01:22:31 time i'm sure there are moments that it's not obviously but like any of the underwater stuff can't be i think it was i think some of it was wow some cats are okay with water when i was three i threw my cat oliver into the pool later that day he ran When I was three, I threw my cat Oliver into the pool. Later that day, he ran away and was killed. And my brother and my dad told me that he killed himself. Oh, my God. When you were three? When you were three?
Starting point is 01:22:58 That is not okay. I think they didn't frame it like that until later. Sure. When I kind of better understood. When you could feel guilt. Yeah. And I think that like, you know, it's like it's a cruel framing, but like, I don't know that it's entirely not accurate. Like the cat like had like a totally like upsetting.
Starting point is 01:23:22 Right. Experience. It's like, I got to get out of here. I need it. I got to get out. I don't want to be here. I was like, I gotta get out of here. I need to, I gotta get out of here. I don't want to be here. I don't want to be here. Yeah. It sounds like you gave him an Australian accent.
Starting point is 01:23:32 I don't want to be here. I don't want to be here. I mean, small children shouldn't be around cats. I mean, the way that they pull at their tails and their ears. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:23:43 So Frodo's gone and she like runs into an alleyway and we see now through the commotion her fentanyl patch has come off it's like all oh shit it's done so i was worried about that and so i was hoping she had an extra one, an extra. I don't think she does. We really wish we had brought that, but we did not. And so she's hiding in an alleyway or just like crouching in an alleyway. It seems like she's losing steam. And we see Frodo. The chaos is kind of cleared now. Most people are dead again.
Starting point is 01:24:24 And so the street is empty again. And we see Frodo running down chaos is kind of cleared now. Most people are dead again. And so the street is empty again. And we see Frodo running down the empty street, chasing a little rat. It's really cutie. And he stops at the top of a subway station entrance that is completely flooded to street level. So it's just like a staircase that goes down to water. And Frodo just like sits at the top of it and he's grooming, licking his paw. And then from the water bursts Joseph Quinn.
Starting point is 01:24:56 This scare really got me. It's like, it was a jump scare. I screamed, screamed, screamed. Whoa. It's because you just really aren't expecting it. This is my favorite kind of jump scare, one that has no buildup to it. There's no tension or dread. It's just like, oh, I'm watching a cute little cat going about his business.
Starting point is 01:25:17 Yeah, they really got you. Oh, they got you. And they got me good. And then Joseph Quinn looks up. He's obviously terrified. He's like everybody else having the worst day of his life. And we're not, it's not clear how long he's been holding his breath,
Starting point is 01:25:33 but it seems as though it's a little bit of one of those movie things where you come out of the water and then you're like, and it's like, what does that mean? Like, where were you? How long were you gone? Did you like swim here? What does that mean like where were you how long were you gone did you like swim here what does that mean yeah yes i want to know the mechanics of what you've
Starting point is 01:25:52 just been through yeah i think it's a little bit like it's just like shorthand movie shorthand for like this person's been underwater for a long time i don't know that that's how it really yeah okay yeah and oh and he has a sweet little connection moment where Frodo is there and they're, like, face to face. And it's just so fun. It's like a real moment. He just, the first thing he sees is Frodo looking at him through the little grave. Oh, there's Frodo. Frodo's in a little face.
Starting point is 01:26:20 He's such a little face. And he's just, like, immediately soothed by this cat yeah and this cat is so he's so cute frodo runs off and he just decides he's gonna follow frodo because why not why not yeah it's such a like simple little connection he like doesn't have anything else in this life. I really get the impression here that something had been cut out. Yeah. That's my feeling. When seeing Matt was like, this is a little bit weird. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:53 But maybe, I don't know. Yeah, because we haven't seen him at all. We haven't seen him at all. And he's like a businessman in a business suit. Okay. So he's not like some hipstery guy. It's New York City. It's New York City, baby.
Starting point is 01:27:05 Yeah, he's been doing business for sure. It's very like, he's like a nondescript man. Yeah. And so he follows Frodo and Frodo finds Sam in the alleyway. And again, we're like being completely silent, obviously. He seems to know that already. And Sam is like, why is this guy following me? She gives Frodo kisses on the head when Frodo comes back to her.
Starting point is 01:27:34 And then. She's struggling to really like having a hard time here. Yeah. Pain wise. Yes. And this guy is standing close to them and she doesn't really know his deal. They can't talk about it. She points in the direction of where everyone is supposed to go to the shipyard or whatever. And he's not going anywhere. it's not creepy he's not doing like a like rapey thing like it doesn't feel like he's a threat or anything so there's nothing scary about it it's like really just like he's you can tell he's so desperate he's just really really scared yeah he really is scared yeah and so sam and frodo
Starting point is 01:28:19 eventually get up and start walking again towards Harlem. And then it starts pouring rain, luckily, because that provides some sound cover for them to have a very quiet little convo where we find out his name is Eric. And he says he's so scared. She says, you know, survivors are getting carried on the boats. And he says, like, he's so scared she says you know you survivors are getting carried on the boats and he says like he's so scared it's really his performance is really good in this he's just he's too scared to go alone anywhere and so he's like i'd rather go with you in the wrong direction basically because i can't i simply can't i'm way too scared to go alone. Oh, that's, I like that. That is like realistic.
Starting point is 01:29:07 That would be a reaction you would have in this, in this situation. It's like summer camp. It's just like summer camp once again. It's that same. Yes. They're going to be friends for life. And you can't go anywhere alone in summer camp. Exactly. So then she's, she kind of also establishes that he doesn't it's like clear he doesn't have anywhere
Starting point is 01:29:27 else to go he's british yeah and so he's like my family is all in england i'm here for law school oh yeah so i have nobody oh okay so they find their way up into a building we can tell from the way she's looking under the mat in front of the door of an apartment that it's her apartment but she doesn't have a key and it's starting to thunder and lightning this is a cool little moment where she's like kicking the door he's like all right and he kicks it it hurts and it's loud and she's like. And then they look up. I guess there's like a skylight. And they look up and wait for lightning. Wait a second. And then synchronize the kick with the thunder.
Starting point is 01:30:13 Cool. Cool. Yeah. And so two kicks get them in. Kind of like how the Cullens play baseball. Exactly. During thunderstorms. Exactly like that.
Starting point is 01:30:22 Oh, yeah. And they get in. And again, you're getting the sense of like well this woman has already said goodbye to this part of her life she definitely didn't intend to be back here again you know she's in hospice she's gonna die and she's kind of looking around and looking at her medications and it's clear that she does not have fentanyl at the apartment then there's a sort of like Garden State moment where we learn, you know, we learn that his parents are from Kent. He doesn't have any place to go. He's here for law school. Then they're able to kind of talk a little bit quietly.
Starting point is 01:30:56 And she hands him, he's like, what's your deal basically? And she hands him a poem. I could have maybe done with this just being a conversation instead of a poem. But the poem basically is about time running out. And about how like, the doctor said four to six months, and it's been six months, the doctor said three to four weeks, and it's been four weeks. And the weeks turn into days turn into minutes turn into, et cetera. And so she's telling him basically, I'm dying through her poem, which is fine. I don't need to be a hater about that. She likes poems. She had another poem in the beginning. She's a poet. And so I guess we're just trying to show that.
Starting point is 01:31:37 Sure. We're getting on board with that. And she holds a published book. She is actually like a poet by like profession. And so that's beautiful and that helps that helps explains the poetry there's kind of a funny moment where because she i think before this she tells him like i'm going to harlem to get pizza so don't come with me and he's like very confused by this and he, I think the world is ending. And she's like, yeah, I think. And I think that's when she like hands him the poem to be like, yeah, no, I know.
Starting point is 01:32:13 But like I was already have come to. The world was already ending for me. And so. They're like sitting in their despair for a moment. And this is the Garden state moment to which i'm referring which is that the in keeping with the synchronizing with the thunder and the lightning the lightning happens and she screams like a very loud scream and then he waits for the thunder to come and then he screams a very loud scream so it's like this kind of cathartic yeah it's all sweet but it's good
Starting point is 01:32:45 i like it and then they fall asleep and she wakes up first the next morning and quietly packs up her stuff grabs frodo and she is going to leave him there she does leave him there oh and she walks to a nearby library and is sitting, and Frodo's sitting across from her and looking at her being all cute. And I feel like they have a moment where she's just like, oh, he's so cute. Yeah. And then he turns like he sees something behind her,
Starting point is 01:33:19 and she very slowly and quietly turns. And it's Eric. He's followed her. He followed her. She kind of rolls her eyes, but you can see that she's also like a little bit happy to see him. But then as she like stands up to, I don't know, talk to him or not talk to him. Definitely not that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:42 To chat. To greet him. Catch up. To greet him to greet him she collapses into a bookshelf which obviously makes a very loud noise both of their eyes go wide they know they're fucked and they just grab frodo and start running immediately pursued by many alien creatures through like what looks like a finance part of town, like huge tall glass buildings. Oh, so he'll understand that he's a businessman.
Starting point is 01:34:16 Right, right, right, right. He was totally in his element. That's where you really see his backstory come into play. He's so confident in that building. his backstory come into play. He's so confident in that building. Before this, do we see the aliens chilling at all? Do we see them hanging out and not seeing them?
Starting point is 01:34:32 Or do we only see them come out? We have a nice moment where we just see one cashing its breath. We'll talk about that. There's just one where it's like... The sense is kind of like, that's relaxing that's like what they do it's too yeah they have limits yeah they do yeah that one had set a boundary for the day and set an intention to take care of himself first yeah i'm done important okay it's very cinematic the
Starting point is 01:35:00 chase through the bank building there's a lot of breaking glass, a lot of sound. Going inside, they get caught in a turnstile situation. It's all very, it's quite intense. Edge of your seat, thrilling stuff. And you're getting, you're seeing these guys, their little faces up close,
Starting point is 01:35:20 their little artichoke faces. Yeah, artichoke is a good description. Yeah, it's kind of, it's getting nasty. They're nasty. They're little artichoke faces. Yeah, artichoke is a good description. It's getting nasty. They're nasty. And I think they make their way to another subway entrance and run down this one. Not quite as flooded. It's flooded basically up to
Starting point is 01:35:38 the train level. And so as if they're on the platform, they can like step off into water like it's a pool. And they know that the things can't swim. So they're like, we'll go in there. To my estimation, this is the worst part of the movie or the most upsetting part of the movie. They go into the subway and they step into subway water.
Starting point is 01:36:08 If you've been to New York and you've seen the subway station, I honestly cannot think of anything more terrifying, upsetting, every single horror movie reaction that you're supposed to have than getting into subway soup. It's like a sewer. Like a rat's bisque. It's a sewer, but to me, plus more rats, like way more rats.
Starting point is 01:36:31 You just think about how the slickness at the bottom of the Union Station, you see that it's black and wet. And so it's that, but it's water. And you just got to go. There wasn't enough disgust. You're right. I mean, they're whatever they're there. But that is so upsetting to me. That was like the most horrible thing to think about. Yeah. Oh, it's so gross. Yeah, that's very bad. And you're just getting a full like bacterial infection the second you're touching.
Starting point is 01:37:05 Yeah. Like there's no protecting yourself from that. And they find a little violin case or something that they're using as a little makeshift boat for Frodo to keep him out of the water. Oh, that's funny. That's funny. And Frodo's a lot of the time in the I heart New York little tote. Okay. the iHeart New York little tote okay so he's now like in the tote in the violin case and they're making their way through this nasty subway water when they look above them and see a big boy a big guy resting taking time for himself yeah he really is and you have to be
Starting point is 01:37:43 like what's he like i guess he is like just relaxing have to be like, what's he doing? I guess he is just relaxing, but I don't know what he's thinking about or what he's doing. He seems upset. He seems like maybe he is upset. I don't know. There's something going on with him. Maybe that's Quiet Place 4 is the interior life of the aliens.
Starting point is 01:38:00 It's really a character study of them. I'd love that. I can't wait. And this is a real study of them I'd love that I can't wait and this is a real leap of faith for our heroes because like they're swimming towards a space where there is it's the gap of air that they can breathe is getting
Starting point is 01:38:16 slimmer and slimmer and slimmer to the point where like there might just be swimming towards drowning and it's obviously less scary than being like eviscerated by one of the like Japanese spider crab things. Yeah. And Eric has a full panic attack here.
Starting point is 01:38:33 And it's, it's like getting to the point where, uh, Sam is trying to calm him down because he's going to make noise. He's trying to be quiet, but he's like, like being as quiet as he can but he's having a full-blown panic attack and she eventually is able to soothe him and calm him down she's like
Starting point is 01:38:54 very good with him and like gentle and like giving him like signs to like breathe breathe breathe and like putting her hands on him and like he's calming down but then when he finally like fully calms down he like lets out a sigh of relief he's like ah and wakes up that big guy who jumps in after them and they have to go under and yeah just like swim and hope that there's an exit on the other side with frodo now in the bag submerged underwater and you see porcupine? And you see that the water, they can't, the creatures can't swim, but it's not like it's like poison
Starting point is 01:39:32 to them. So it's like, it's swimming, but then it realizes it can't swim. But you do have moments of the claw coming like right at their feet, right at their ankles, about to get them, about to get them, about to get them about to get them about to get them before they're underwater it's like they don't understand that they can't like breathe
Starting point is 01:39:49 underwater yeah they drown they drown uh-huh they're not as smart as us that's that's something sorry i don't want to say that but it's true no it's just true. It's true. And so luckily they do come up on another subway like exit or something and climb up into what is a church that other people are in. There seems to be a service happening. Did you notice that? Yeah. What? Yeah. They've already like established like a civilization here with its own rules.
Starting point is 01:40:24 Well, it's time for church. Time for silent church. Yeah, seemed to be a priest not giving a sermon, but standing in the sermon spot. Sure. He fancies himself a priest. Being silent? Yeah, everyone's silent. That's for sure.
Starting point is 01:40:39 Oh, and Frodo comes out of the bag and he's all wet and shakes off and runs. He's fine. But he's okay wet and shakes off and runs. Fine. But he's okay. He is number one most resilient character in this movie. Yeah. Everyone's really resilient, but he absolutely is giving that. He's just been put in a bag and submerged in subway water. That's pretty bad. I want to just quickly pause to say that there's no besides the idea of pizza and
Starting point is 01:41:06 maybe it's because pizza is so central to the plot it's the only time we are talking about food no one's eating any food and that's true in the other movies too so i guess i have to just not be that annoyed about that but i find it kind of frustrating like you would want you would be you need to eat something you gotta eat you gotta eat i guess you drink water at least she fed frodo she did exactly she fed frodo and she gave those kids her candy bar i would just think she's dying and she's hungry i did i did notice how in the bodega when she stocked up it felt like she grabbed like what i would grab at 7-eleven for one light afternoon yeah totally yeah she could have filled up the bag yeah that's right yeah and also get like would grab at 7-Eleven for one light afternoon. Yeah, totally. Yeah, she could have filled up the bag.
Starting point is 01:41:47 Yeah. That's right. Yeah. And also get like nutrient-dense things, like things that are actually going to like keep you going. Don't get just like Takis. Yes. But get some Takis.
Starting point is 01:41:59 Some Takis. No, that's the loudest snack possible. Oh, yes. That's true. You do have to get really quiet snacks. So she gets up out of the water. They're like, sigh of relief. Wow, we made it.
Starting point is 01:42:20 And she again immediately collapses because she is in extreme pain and doesn't have her medication. And so when she comes to, it's like later in the evening now, she's laid on a church pew and Eric writes on the notepad that she has, what meds do you need? Very sweet. And then Eric sets out by himself to a pharmacy. He goes and gets to the pharmacy. He's looking all around. He finds what he needs. He's in a spooky, dark place. It's fun to see sets that you've seen be spooky before,
Starting point is 01:42:52 but they're spooky in a different context because you're just thinking about noise. Yep. And then there's a sound. And it's Frodo again. Frodo followed him. Cutie. Frodo. I know. He's keeping us af. Frodo followed him. Oh, cutie. Oh, Frodo.
Starting point is 01:43:06 I know. He's keeping us afloat in this movie. He's our, like, glimmer of hope. So thank God they're reunited. They start heading back to the church, but then Frodo... Is it a... What distracts him?
Starting point is 01:43:19 He just, like, runs up a hill. Yeah, he just runs off. Like, into, like, a fire pit. This is the point at which even as someone who loves cats very very much i would not yeah i would not be trying to get frodo in this situation because frodo has already shown that he's pretty good at getting himself back to where they are which yeah I thought the same thing too though like if he could find his way to a pharmacy he
Starting point is 01:43:52 definitely could just like run up a little hill and then run right back down to the church yeah but for whatever reason I think he feels he needs to well because, because he's, I guess, cares about Sam. He follows Frodo. And Frodo is basically found, do you remember in Lion King, the Be Prepared song? Of course. Where all the hyenas are in the lair. It's like he's found that version of the Quiet Place universe. Where it's like all of these nasty little little guys are all like doing why'd you freaking go over there they're doing their nasty alien things what are they doing like a feeding ground
Starting point is 01:44:34 or like maybe they're laying eggs there but also they're eating their own eggs and also frodo goes to eat one of the eggs nasty Frodo! Yes, Frodo! Nasty, you already had food. You ate, you're the only one who ate here. I know, he's so, and he's, it's not a good, it's not his best moment. So Frodo runs up onto this like metal beam above this nasty nest. The nasty nest. And Eric is. Goes after it, goes into the nasty nest. The nasty nest. And Eric is.
Starting point is 01:45:06 Goes after it? Goes into the nasty nest? He's climbing up this beam to like balance to try to grab Frodo. As there's like huge alien monsters right next to him. He at one point makes like a tiny little sound. And one of the big ones comes up right by him. And his little artichoke head opens up. Ew.
Starting point is 01:45:30 And like he's listening and Eric is being so quiet looking at Frodo. Frodo's being pretty quiet too. And did you hold your breath in this scene, Kathleen? I was like really trying to not make a noise. Yeah. Well, and in this moment, you're also, I feel like we've seen it in one of the other movies, but you're really getting like a good picture of what that nasty little echolocation ear looks like.
Starting point is 01:45:54 It's wet in there. It's got black stuff in there. It's so nasty. It reminds me of, have you ever seen a video of a crow's ear? No, no, but I'm curious. Either look it up or don't. It's really nasty. It reminds me of, have you ever seen a video of a crow's ear? No. Oh, no. But I'm curious.
Starting point is 01:46:06 Either look it up or don't. It's really nasty. A crow's ear? Wait, you know what? I've seen owl ears. I wonder if they're similar because I was like horrified by owl ears. Was it the same as like the horse hoof thing that you've, fairy fingers? Wait, what about horse hooves?
Starting point is 01:46:25 Oh, God. They're nasty. And when horses are born... When horses are born, their hooves come out all nasty. Gross. Really gross. Nasty.
Starting point is 01:46:36 I didn't know that. I have a lot of Googling to do after this. They look like the mushroom... They look like the guys from fucking The Last of Us. The things that come out of their mouths. That's what their horse feet look like. mushroom they look they look like the guys from fucking yeah yeah the last of us the things that come out of their mouths that's what their horse feels like it's disgusting the most disgusting thing about crow's ears is how simple the horror is i mean it could either it either won't bother you at all or it will haunt you for the rest of your life so you either look at it or not but it's but i think there must be some like creature inspiration from bird's ears
Starting point is 01:47:05 because there's a lot uh there's it's similar okay yeah that makes sense fuck it's kind of like just an unending hole and it's like way bigger than you think it is and it's right i think the most the worst of it is that it's like it's such a deception because it's like right under the feather like it's right there it's such a deception because it's, like, right under the feather. Like, it's right there. It's bleh. Anyway. So good. Anyway, yes, we're looking in the air.
Starting point is 01:47:34 We're seeing, we're feeling the horror of the moment. He gets away. I mean, the creature moves on, doesn't find him, and he is able to grab Frodo and make it back to the church and we just yeah we might be missing some footage here too because he does just like return to the church yep which is fine that's fine i'm i don't need to see the journey sure cut the shoe leather baby yep and he's got that he's got the fentanyl patches she's psyched she's very happy and they have another little conversation that i can't remember if it was written or if they're just whispering really really quietly but as she's like kind of coming back to herself and feeling like uh more okay is she she had mentioned at her
Starting point is 01:48:20 house that her dad was a pianist and he might ask her or she might just offer up now more information on that that he was a jazz pianist and he would play in harlem and that afterwards they would go to patsy's for pizza and so that's why this is important to her yeah she says specifically he played piano beautifully and eric is on board with this and so the next day after they sleep i think they go they head to harlem they make it to patsy's and it is unsurprisingly a pile of rubble yeah but the jazz club that her dad played at is still standing and so they go in there and she sits at one of the tables they have some scotch is that scotch just someone left it did you get that impression that they were drinking someone's dregs of a scotch or do you think that they poured it fresh i think they poured it fresh i think they got another bottle
Starting point is 01:49:28 but you know i can't say for sure this scene is like very pregnant with like anticipation where you're like what the fuck is gonna happen and it does what happens is not what i thought was gonna happen at all no it is surprising what happens they start fucking they start making that aggressively fucking yeah uh eric goes out and he finds some pizza somewhere not at patsy's but a nearby pizza store haven't eaten in days I would take any pizza you have. And he comes back to her, finds or uses her marker to write Patsy's on the pizza box. Very cute. Really cute. This is the cutest first date.
Starting point is 01:50:15 Did you get scared when they bit into the pizza that there's going to accidentally be like a Dorito in it or something? I got really scared that there was going to be such a loud crunch. I did not get scared, but that is, now I want to try Doritos on pizza. Yeah. It's like a Taco Bell. Yeah, that's a Taco Bell. French Supreme. Somebody's done that for sure, yeah.
Starting point is 01:50:37 And then they continue their little cutesiness. We do see the thing that's like leading us to believe something bad is going to happen is that the first thing she does when she gets there is she pops her iPod into a speaker to charge it. Yeah. And we're like, oh, yeah. That kind of goes into the background for a while. Yeah. happening while they're eating their pizza and then eric finds a deck of cards and does a little magic show performance for her once again that childlike wonder they're having this like moment of sweetness where they're quietly laughing it's like slightly like did we
Starting point is 01:51:26 can we believe this what do we know about Eric that would make lead us to believe he could do a magic show and then it's like I don't know whatever yeah we don't know anything we don't know anything about either of them I like was ready to be critical of it of like well what what would lead us to believe this is a magic show
Starting point is 01:51:42 and then I was like I don't fucking care he can do magic you do a little magic. He'd do a little magic trick. He can do a little magic. Yeah, why not? And then they hear, again, like a loudspeaker or something. And they go outside to see they're near the shoreline. And there is a boat filled with survivors. And I think they're just calling out,
Starting point is 01:52:05 like, come to the boat if you're there, if any survivors, come here. So they get their stuff together. They're going to head that way. And by the way, the pizza, there's a moment where she eats the pizza and it's like, it's not that good. I kind of like that she acknowledged, like,
Starting point is 01:52:22 it's not very good. Yeah. It didn't look that good. It's kind of sweet. It's snow patsies. It's snow patsies. It's been sitting out for several days. like, it's not very good. Yeah. It didn't look that good. Yeah. It's kind of sweet. It's no patsies. It's no patsies. It's been sitting out for several days.
Starting point is 01:52:29 Yeah, for sure. Just out. Yeah. In the alien-infested universe. So it's not great. And Sam gives Eric her sweater, and she's holding Frodo, and they make their way towards the shore. There's like a, the city goes to like, there's like a freeway highway that's between the city and the shoreline. And so it goes basically city, highway, beach, shoreline.
Starting point is 01:53:21 And as they're making their way through this freeway where there's like all these cars, abandoned cars that they're kind of winding through quietly, they see that on the shoreline, because this boat is using a loudspeaker, there's tons of the little alien monsters trying to get at it. Just like looking like, like frustrated that they can't get to the boat, but like blocking the path for anybody else to get to the boat. Right, right. No. Mouths like run. And she grabs a tire iron or something on the ground and just starts smashing car windows, setting off all these car alarms and just runs in the opposite direction, drawing all the aliens after her. He's running with Frodo in the little bag, running towards the pier.
Starting point is 01:54:03 But then he crunches on something. There's like glass on the ground or something that makes a noise. And so some of the aliens circle back and are chasing him now. Sam's trying to make noise, but he's now just like running for his life as fast as he can and making more noise than he would like to otherwise, but he's just got to fucking run. And all of the aliens are redirected from her to him and so she is able to like just be watching him and like fucking
Starting point is 01:54:31 like gripping her seat hoping to god that he makes it and he's running down the dock with them just inches behind him when he he's got a little frodo in his sweater and he jumps off the dock and makes it into the water at the last second oh yeah that's why this movie is pg-13 and not our baby it's pg-13 it's to have a slightly happier ending. Well, don't hold your breath. Oh, no. Then they all die. Then they all die. Damn it. And he gets up to the surface of the water. He's got Frodo. And
Starting point is 01:55:15 this was the shot that I was like, this looks like an actual cat, like, in water. In water. You're right. No, you're right. It was a real cat. And just, Nico and Schnnitzel absolute pros incredible incredible stuff and uh sam sees that he's made it and she's obviously like so relieved and smiling but it's you know bittersweet bittersweet and you also can see on her face like like her sickness more than we've ever seen it
Starting point is 01:55:45 like her lips are really chapped and she's looking like more even more thin and like like really like she's she's seen better days yeah yeah then he he's swimming through the water he finally they jiman hansu brings him up onto the boat. She earlier gave him her sweater and kind of her goodbye moments. And so I think that both the cat and the sweater kind of make him recognizable as like a relic of her to everybody on the boat. And there's like sort of a warm moment. Jaiman's son is there, too. He takes the cat to Joyce. there too and he takes the cat to joyce he says you're safe and it's like the first time that eric feels safe he just holds frodo and like cries because he's safe oh and i mentioned earlier the
Starting point is 01:56:42 jaiman hansu is in quiet place 2 they're on an island which we know in Quiet Place 2 so that's like the safe place and this is them going to that now so we know that they are actually going to safety at least for the near future we don't see Joseph Quinn but
Starting point is 01:57:00 he could have just been on the other side playing for Cheesy on the other side of the island exactly yeah yeah then we will we're back with our girl and she's clearly back in Harlem and it's a chill day and she's listening to her iPod on the speakers with her headphones on. She's listening to that Nina Simone. I'm feeling good. A little overused. A little overused. But I think it reminds her of her dad for sure.
Starting point is 01:57:37 And she's just like breathing in the sun and having a really nice lovely moment to herself. And you can hear diegetically that it's in her headphones. And then it's like, it's a new day. It's a new dawn. And then she pulls out the headphones and the speakers say, and I'm feeling good. And then an alien comes and the movie is over.
Starting point is 01:58:02 Wow. Ooh, I got chills. baby wow really good baby was really good great i think i would rather be killed really fast by a big alien than die slowly from my pain yeah at that point yeah if you don't have fentanyl you don't have anything to like yeah i think it's probably like much faster i really thought she was going to in the piano scene where all of a sudden yes magic i thought she was going to play the piano and that's what i thought and i i felt like yeah she would go out playing her um father's music but maybe that's like a bit of a rewrite it felt like or even a reshoot like it felt like that could have been like where the movie was actually gonna end but I think it's so much better the way it did but but it was interesting
Starting point is 01:58:51 wow I yeah that was great that was great I loved it that was great I loved it and also it's just so sad to think about the end of the world in that way yeah it makes me really sad and it's like especially if you have kids like what do you do my my dad um my dad was a politician and um so i felt like he knew things about the government that we didn't know and uh when it was y2k i later found out that we had a bunch of cyanide pills in our um in our garage to be used oh my god yeah and it was like oh we were really worried about that it might have also been associated with 9-11 like i think it might have had something to do with like nuclear like like a threat of nuclear warfare as well but it crazy it does make you think like what you know in those situations like yeah maybe i'd rather my children just be like quickly ripped apart by um by a alien yeah then to like starve to death yeah god
Starting point is 01:59:52 yeah and live in like fear forever there is a horror movie that i watched recently that is about that and i won't say which one it is because the kind of the fun of it is that you don't know that that's happening until the end. Is it a new horror movie? Yeah. I really like this movie and do you think that they'll make another one? Quiet Place? Probably if it made this much money.
Starting point is 02:00:18 Yeah and they can keep There'll probably be one that's like all set on that island and that's where Joseph Quinn's character will do it. Right. Like they'll keep to explain why he wasn't in the other one doing like in this anthology where you can just have yeah where they're just like different characters connection different vignettes of like what they kind of painted themselves into a corner calling this day one because like you could do a whole you could do a day one trilogy like day one part two quiet place day one part two four of six the fourth movie
