This is a HeadGum Podcast.
This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves.
I'm Emily and I am too scared to watch scary movies.
I'm Henley and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies.
I'm Sammy and I love watching scary movies and so I watch them so that you don't have to.
And we've got a pretty scary one for you guys today.
Ooh, okay.
Felt like we hadn't had like a very scary one in
a while. And you know, this one could be scarier, but it's pretty scary. Oh no. Yeah. And if you're
just like, Ooh, I can't wait. I got to hear that recap right now. There's timestamps in the show
notes for you to navigate to that. Because first we've got a little bit of haunted housekeeping,
to that because first we've got a little bit of haunted housekeeping a little bit of horror news which is just that there is a movie coming out or in production possibly with kristen stewart
and oscar isaac oh my i know no so many people dm'd us being like did you guys manifest this
did you manifest it into the universe i I felt similarly with Long Legs. When Long Legs was announced, I was like, wait,
are they making this for us?
Did I do this?
Yeah, like, this is crazy.
It's directed by Panos Kosmatos, who is the director of Mandy. And it's an 80s vampire
movie. They are vampire lovers that go into 80s nightlife i just in los angeles
during can you even fucking believe that that's gonna be real it's like face you guys they scrubbed
our data they've been watching us they knew we we have been doing so many searches about Oscar Isaac and Kristen Stewart in 80s
nightlife that they were like, the numbers were way up. The numbers were way, way up.
Great. I'm beyond ready for it. I just feel like we're so blessed.
We are so blessed. It was like the kind of thing that I was like, do I believe in God now?
God's plan.
God's plan. That one
was God's plan. The rest of it, it's hard to say,
but that was God's plan.
Speaking of, have you guys seen all the
Kendrick Lamar Drake beef?
Do you know what it is? No.
Because I don't know. I don't know. Okay. All right.
Then we can't talk about it. Somebody tell us. We can't talk about it,
but if somebody knows. We can't talk about it. Someone if we can talk about it, someone knows it's a lot.
It's a, it's a big piece of culture right now is Kendrick Lamar, Drake beef.
They have some serious allegations they're throwing around about each other.
I just feel like I never know what's going on.
Do you know what I mean?
I mean, it's wild to me that people would be like, I mean, this happens with Taylor Swift
too, but people are like sending messages to each other through their songs like it's yes yes yes it is funny i did i did and
now it makes sense to me because a friend of mine did post a tiktok that was a guy he's saying when
you realize that rappers who are like insulting each other in the music are just two men writing
poems about each other exactly it's like oh yeah it's kind of beautiful
it's kind of yeah it's kind of like really romantic sweet i think they're in love we wish
them the best and they're beautiful romance yeah although it's i mean what they're each accusing
what i've seen very briefly they're each accusing you of terrible terrible things so
okay yeah it's very some poems can be mean yeah. And some people who write poetry aren't perfect.
Wow.
Yep.
Some poets aren't perfect.
Yep.
Yep.
Yeah, that's really true.
You heard it here first.
You heard it here first, folks.
And that's our take.
And that's our take on all of it.
You guys, did anything scary happen to you this week other than this crazy Drake and Kendrick Lamar?
That we're all aware of.
We're all swept up in the drama other than that.
I was really, I couldn't think of a single freaking thing.
I'm like, we went out of town this weekend.
And so I feel, we just talked about this
before we started recording,
but I feel sort of like outside of my body in a way
that I'm outside of time.
I'm outside of my body.
I've just returned to my home.
I don't really know what's going on or where I am.
The only things I could think to talk about were wedding related or like about my cats.
And I, in thinking about talking about both of those things, I started to have a crisis.
I was like, don't talk about those things.
Emily, our experiences are deeply mirrored right now because I also am existing outside of
time, outside of space. I've just returned to my body just in this moment. Last thing I can
remember is doing this podcast. I'm pretty sure that I'm pretty sure I haven't been alive in
between last recording and this recording. So what if we're not? Right now, this is the only
moment that we're living and it's great to be here and it's great to be alive with you i so i was just gonna say that
you know just it occurred to me i showered before doing this and i realized i haven't been perfect
i have not been perfect but i think of every year that we've done the podcast this year so far 2024
has been my best year of moisturizing yes i just wanted to put it out there that I have actually been so much better at moisturizing
this year than ever before.
And so it's not scary.
It's great.
I just wanted to take a little moment.
You've got it.
You have to acknowledge the growth.
You have to acknowledge the milestones.
And, you know, it's just it's going better.
It's going better than it ever has.
That's huge.
Something clicked for me as well,
and I also am very good about it now.
And this is my most moisturized year.
Wow.
Two.
Wow.
Wow.
And it feels great.
And it feels great.
And it feels great.
Yes.
It feels great, and it feels great.
Yes.
Both.
Do you know what I mean?
I do.
It feels great and it feels great.
Yes.
Both.
Do you know what I mean?
I do.
Actually, that's a good segue into my scary thing, which is totally skincare related.
I was influenced by TikTok I saw and I don't know whether it's going to work.
It's a grand experiment. But I saw a TikTok of this girl being like,
you only need like two products and they're $10 and that's all you need. You don't need to buy all this expensive skincare. Great if true.
You just, Vanicream. Do you guys use Vanicream or seen that anywhere?
Never heard of it.
People on skincare addiction really do love it. Yep.
Yeah. So Vanicream and then castor oil.
Oh. You know castor oil. Oh.
You know castor oil?
Yeah.
Okay. So you can buy like organic cold pressed castor oil online and you just put a couple
drops with the Vanicream, slather it all over your face. And castor oil is antimicrobial and
antibacterial. So it's like cleansing and it's really good for redness.
Wait, I have redness.
I've been using it for like three nights. It feels great. It feels really good for redness. Wait, I have redness. I've been using it for like three nights.
It feels great.
It feels really good on the skin.
Also, it was like $15.
Okay, keep talking.
And I don't know.
I'm just going to use it now.
That's what my like, because I needed a new moisturizer.
So I was like Googling moisturizers
and I was overwhelmed by the options.
And then I just saw this TikTok.
It's so overwhelming.
I was like, I'll just fucking try this.
Like this is cheap and like, great.
I'm going to try it.
And it honestly, it feels really good.
It doesn't smell weird.
We'll see.
Okay.
I love this.
I love this.
I'll send you a pic of my products.
Send me a pic of your products.
I mean, I can't get into it, but you know, I just have no idea what the fuck I'm supposed
to be putting on my face.
I have no idea.
No.
And I'm just grasping at straws here.
And, you know, I, every time I get really overwhelmed, I just, I'm going to do it right
now.
I just take a big gulp of water because I'm like, at the end of the day, maybe all I need
to do is just drink more water.
So.
Can't go wrong.
Can't go wrong.
But I could go more right, which is what I'm after.
And so I would love to, yeah, send me a pic of your products.
And I hope that that's the solution because, oh, my God, skincare is so fucking expensive.
It's really crazy.
It's so expensive.
Yeah.
Lots to be scared of in the skincare world.
A lot.
Well, I'll take a real left turn here and say this isn't something scary that happened to me.
But something scary that is happening to me tomorrow is that i have jury duty
oh no have you had jury duty before oh no you've just the first time so this is my first time
because i was uh not a citizen until a couple years ago and so you know and they got you you
don't have to do it if you're not a citizen and And now I have to do it. And I'm like excited for it in a way. Like something about it is kind of cool. But I know that they ask you questions to try to figure out if you're an okay fit for the case or whatever. And for some reason, I'm just really nervous about it. I'm like, what do I...
Don't be nervous.
Have you done it?
Yeah, once.
Emily, have you had done jury duty?
I have, but I never got asked questions.
I was just in the waiting room all day
and they got the people they needed and I went home.
I was on a jury.
I was on a jury for like 10 days.
Wow, so we've had all the experiences.
10 days.
Was it a civil case or criminal?
It was a civil case. It was a really long case for a civil case.
Wait, I remember this.
Yeah. It was a car accident. And basically what happened was that...
Okay, what happened? Oh, it was like an elderly man rear-ended another person, and then the other person immediately filed charges
against this elderly man,
who then immediately called one of those numbers
that's on a billboard on the highway
of those injury attorneys.
And so it was this elderly man and this injury attorney,
and the injury attorney was a stereotype of those billboards.
He was really like... Was it like billboards. Like he was really like.
Like sweet James or whatever.
I feel like that's.
Yeah.
Smooth talking, like trying to like.
Sounds like sweet James.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it went on forever because they called about a thousand expert witnesses.
Oh my God.
All these doctors who were, you you know questioned about all these like these
injuries sorry I'm like talking about this forever but it was so interesting to me because I was like
I can't believe this is a whole life people have being expert witnesses because they do the
questioning and then they do the cross-examination and they're like how much are they paying you to
be here and it's crazy amounts of money like they're being paid a shit ton of you to be here? And it's crazy amounts of money. Like they're being paid a shit ton of
money to be expert witnesses. And so then they have to be like, oh, like I got like $10,000 for
being here today or something like insane. And it's like, okay, well, do we trust you then? Like
what the fuck is going on? It was actually really interesting. So I'm excited for you, Sammy. I hope
you get put on a jury because it's actually really interesting. Wow. You'd be a great juror. Yeah. I obviously will keep you posted.
You going to Stanley Mosque? I actually don't have to go in. So I think the post-COVID,
it's now you basically, instead of sitting in a room and waiting, you just have to call once to
check, which seems much more efficient. Yeah. You call in the morning. This happened to Joel
a few months ago and he never had to go in.
He called every day.
And by Friday, they were like, yeah, we don't need to.
So I think I'll be kind of disappointed if that happens,
like a little bit.
You just never know.
Like relieved, but also a little bit disappointed.
Like, well.
It's actually, we're given such few opportunities
to do anything with our community.
Wow. such few opportunities to do anything with our community. So it's like being forced to like interact with a bunch of strangers is actually kind
of, there's something kind of nice about it.
Yeah.
Well, I wish you the best.
Thank you.
Whatever happens, you know, whatever happens, it's going to be, it's going to be great.
It's going to be great.
As long as they don't jury duty me the freebie kind
as long as it's not some sort of big elaborate prank because no thank you no thanks i we don't
like pranks here on the pod what if what if they pick you for a juror and it like 100 is not a
freebie situation but you are convinced it is and you spend the whole time trying to figure out where
the tv cameras are because i think that'd be a fun, I think that'd entertain you. That'd be a fun way
to entertain yourself while on a tour. Yeah. I like that. It's pretending you think you're
being pranked. Just like to all my fellow jurors, like, okay, you can, you can be honest with me.
Like what's your real name? Be real now. Have I seen you in anything else? Like what do you do?
Improv or what? Like that would be a perfect way to get out of being a juror. Probably. They ask you questions and you're like, this is a prank.
I know it is. Where are the cameras? Where's James Marsden? Where's James Marsden?
I know you got him here somewhere. Oh, that'd be very fun. If he was there.
It would be fun if he was there. He can probably never serve on a jury now without people thinking
that it's a TV show. Yeah, that's true.
He probably got out of jury doo-doo for life.
Forever.
Yeah, good for him.
Yeah.
Should we talk about this week's movie?
We should.
Yes, please.
This week's movie is Alone.
Came out in 2020.
Directed by John Hyams, who I didn't know also directed Sick, which we previously covered.
Sick was kind of fun.
Yeah.
I remember Sick not being too terrible.
Mm-hmm.
And yeah, this is not a terrible, there's some bad stuff in it for sure.
Mm-hmm.
But it's a tight little thriller.
I feel like 90 minute.
Love a 90 minute.
I like this kind of horror
movie. It was written by Matthias Olsen, starring Jules Wilcox, Mark Manchassa, and Anthony Heald.
And it is streaming on Hulu. And I don't know if you guys remember this, but
I almost watched this movie when I was living alone in Washington.
And it is a movie about a woman alone in Washington being followed by a murderer.
And so I turned it off and decided to revisit it at a later date.
That was such a healthy choice.
Yeah, I'm really glad that you did that for yourself.
Really glad, yeah.
Some of the movies I watched there in that house,
because I was working in Washington and staying in a house with the production team.
That was this big house.
A bunch of windows.
A bunch of windows.
And I was still doing the podcast every weekend.
And so I'd watch a horror movie in this big,
unfamiliar house.
That was some of the most scared I've ever been in watching horror movies yeah watching paranormal activity 2 there i got a taste of what people that are
scared of horror movies must feel like i actually thought regular feeling yeah yeah like i actually
thought i like might die that night like it felt actually like i was in danger. Yes, I've felt that before. I've definitely felt that before. It's awful.
It's awful. It really is. So I understand you guys a little better after that. But okay, so Alone,
it has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Wow. But I did notice that's the critics' score. The audience score, 53%.
Quite a large disparity there.
Quite a large discrepancy.
I also, you know, we all know that Rotten Tomatoes is like, it's not science.
No.
Ever since Challengers doesn't have a full 100%, I'm like, well, actually Rotten Tomatoes doesn't work.
Because so many other random movies have 100% actually Rotten Tomatoes like doesn't work because so many other random movies
have 100% on Rotten Tomatoes I mean we should just take a look at them but Challengers I'm sure is a
lot better than a lot of other ones yeah because it has to do with yeah how many reviews there are
and like the wording of the I don't know yeah you know so anyway that's all i'm saying but yeah just kind of interested i thought that
was a little strange 70 on metacritic and a 6.2 on imdb okay couldn't find the budget it made
642 502 dollars in theaters 2020 release i guess Yeah, when in 2020 did it come out? I think it was in
fall, like August or September. Yeah. So yeah, not to be expected to do well in the theaters. It was
released on VOD at the same time. I don't know if those numbers are included in this figure,
because this is the box office total. So no, it probably made more money. But I mean, I don't
remember this movie making too big of a splash yeah there is also another horror movie called alone that came
out in 2020 so that might have added to negatively affected both movies we were all feeling a very
specific way in 2020 i don't know uh alone and it's scary, and you're alone.
And the reality TV show Alone became a huge hit starting in 2020. Everyone started watching Alone that year.
Because we all felt a little bit alone.
Alone.
And this is a remake of the writers. The writer on this, Matthias Olsen, wrote a Swedish film
called Gone in 2011.
And this is a remake of that.
And he wrote this one as well.
I'm like curious if it's a funny games style, like word for word, or if he changed.
Well, one word is definitely not the same.
It's gone.
Yeah.
But it's not alone.
So it's not word for word.
It's per se.
Actually, Forsvunnen.
Ooh.
I don't know. swedish is extremely terrible i don't understand the language at all it's you look at a word and you're like that's how you say that
yeah i can't even begin can't even begin it's very confusing but it's fun to listen to
and then because there was that other horror movie named alone, this just, as I was looking at the IMDb for this page, there's an actor credited, Tyler Posey, who is in Truth or Dare that we talked about.
And so I recognized him and I was like, he wasn't in this movie.
Like, I didn't see him in this movie.
And I was really trying to figure out who he was.
And then I clicked on the other Alone's IMDb page, and he's the main character in that one.
So he just got credited for both of them accidentally.
I found a goof.
I found a goof on IMDb.
Yeah.
But no other real trivia.
So I think we should just get into it.
Great.
I'm ready to get into it.
Me too.
Let's do it.

hellobello.com slash too scary. I used to love back to school
shopping so much that I would tell my mom that I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up
because I just loved getting all the things that I needed that I would use every day in class.
I still to this day have nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number two pencils. Really scary
stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need notebooks or number two pencils
anymore. But this fall there is something that I will be using every day and would be terrified to
be caught without. And that's Raycon's best-selling
everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks every day and so I need earbuds that I can rely on
to listen to all my favorite podcasts. And I know you guys listen to podcasts as well,
so you know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon black because that's my vibe,
but they come in other cool colors as well, like forest green and brush violet. But my favorite
thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours and they have a new quick
charge function, so 10 minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of
battery life. Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a long morning walk.
You forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode
of a podcast. It's only going to take you 10 minutes. It's incredible. So go to
buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get 20 to 40% off site-wide. That's right, you'll get up to
40% off everything on Raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary, buyraycon.com slash too scary.
I will do a trigger warning for discussion of suicide.
And okay, recap.
Let's do it. So we start with our main character, Jessica, woman in her 30s or so, packing up her house,
loading everything into a U-Haul trailer, the kind that you like attach to your car.
And she's not looking particularly happy, not super excited about this move, or, you know, we don't know.
And then a title card comes up that just says, The Road.
We see her driving, hitting the road with all of her belongings in tow.
We're in the Pacific Northwest.
We get a lot of aerial shots of just what seems like infinite forests, trees, feeling pretty alone in this landscape.
And as she's on this isolated road, she's behind a Jeep that's going pretty slow.
And she's trying to overtake them, but the road keeps curving.
And so she can't see if someone's coming and she's got a long attachment on the back of her car.
So it's going to be even trickier than normal to pass someone. But she sees a bit of an open
stretch and she goes for it. And as soon as she gets next to him, he starts speeding up.
Oh, man.
Have you guys done this before?
It is like the road I grew up on was like this where you had to pass people all the time.
And this is like such a central fear of mine that it would like go wrong having to pass people.
It is scary.
Yeah, it is scary.
It also is so strange
the human psychology
would be like,
no, I'm fast.
Like, it's like,
just let them go around you
because then you can keep
driving your regular speed.
Yeah.
But there is something
in the human psyche
that as soon as you think
someone is moving faster
than you,
all of a sudden
you feel the need
to show off
how fast and strong
and big you are.
Really strange.
What are your guys' driving temperaments?
Slow.
Oh, I'm angry and impatient.
I'm like so scared all the time when I'm driving.
Oh, I'm like comfortable and chill.
I feel like somehow, I think it happened from not having to drive to work anymore.
So like I'm only driving when I'm going somewhere that I like I'm excited about going there.
And so I'm usually in a good mood when I'm driving.
Yeah, that makes sense.
And I don't have to be clocking in at a certain time or whatever.
So I'm like not necessarily in a rush when I'm driving.
And I just give a lot of peace signs.
Love that. Peace signs? Not in a lot of peace signs. Love that.
Peace signs?
Not in a way of like blessings to you,
but it's more just, no, it's like if I'm like saying thanks or whatever.
Oh, you do a peace sign.
That's nice.
I just do a hand.
I do a little peace sign.
I do a hand.
I do a hand.
That's cute.
A little peace sign's cute.
I shouldn't say, I'm not angry, but I'm an impatient driver for sure.
I'm impatient too.
I'm also impatient. I'll
occasionally get mad and impatient as well. Yeah. It totally depends on the context,
but I got to say I lean scared. Definitely lean scared. Yeah. Yeah. Well, in this situation,
I would have slowed down and gone back behind this car. because she she now sees that there is a huge 18 wheeler
coming on the other side and she just floors it more and is like come on come on like let me over
let me over and it does get to a point of like well now you have to do it i guess but i i just
that eco thing of someone having to prove they're the biggest, strongest. Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, just don't.
Just go back behind him.
It's not worth it.
And what I have a feeling we're going to find out, it's really not worth it.
It's really not worth it.
Yes, exactly.
So she does finally overtake him.
Of course, just in the nick of time, the truck plows past right afterwards.
A real close call.
She's very rattled by it and continues driving.
And now this guy just drives up her ass, honking, like flashing brights at her. It's daytime,
but he's just like on her ass, just being such a jerk. And she's starts getting a little scared.
Like,
okay,
this is not a rational,
normal person here.
And so really scary how you just simply never know.
Yeah,
exactly.
And so she pulls over and he passes and she's,
you know,
shaken up and she's on the side of the road,
just kind of breathing like,
um, and thinking, well, that's the end of that for sure for sure he's gone and so she continues driving and at night she pulls into a gas station she's filling up her tank and she calls her dad. And it's kind of a strained conversation
where we find out that she was supposed to leave on this move the following day. And so her dad is
a little upset saying, you know, we were supposed to help you. You're already gone. Like you didn't
say goodbye. And she's like oh I just you
know felt antsy wanted to get on the road and she tells him she's already 300 miles away he's like
oh wow you must be like hauling it and he says why did you call me and not mom and she says because
I didn't want to talk to mom I wanted to talk to you he says are you alone name of the movie name of the movie
hate it and yeah she is and he says that they're him and her mom are worried about her
and something's you know going on in this family dynamic and as she's having this conversation she sees the jeep pulling up
like turning on the street of the gas station and driving very slowly past where she is
she turns and looks and just sees the guy driving staring at her no and then he speeds up and drives off.
No.
Fuck. I don't like that.
And it's nighttime, right?
Nighttime now.
And she finds a motel for the night.
And we see that her mom is calling her and she's ignoring that call.
And she gets settled in her room.
And she's holding on to this necklace she's wearing
which has two wedding rings on it and then she's looking at videos and photos of her and a husband
and so we're kind of putting two and two together and realizing she might be a widow
and yeah she she's just looking at photos of him and crying.
Oh, dark. God damn it.
She goes to bed.
She's on edge.
She likes every car that pulls in,
any headlights she sees through the window,
she checks and makes sure it's not this Jeep.
But eventually she falls asleep.
She wakes up in the morning goes back
out to her car gonna hit the road again when a man knocks on her window and does the motion of
roll down your window just so scary and she doesn't look like she wants she rolls it down
you know two inches enough to be able to hear what he has to say.
And he says something like, do you recognize me?
And she says, what?
No.
And he moves out of the way to show her.
He says, that's the car I'm driving.
And it's the Jeep.
This is the guy.
And he says, I'm sorry.
I just wanted to apologize for yesterday.
I was texting on my phone, and so I was going slower,
and then when you started to overtake me, it brought me back to the moment,
and I was actually late for something, and I didn't handle it well,
and I just wanted to apologize.
She's pretty short with him, just says, it's fine. What's done is done. with him just says it's fine
what's done is done
don't worry about it
and
he says
do you live nearby
she says no
he says
well where are you going
she says
north
says do you have a name
oh god
oh I'm so
so
it's awful.
She tells him her name is Jessica.
And he says, well, I'm always around here.
Like, I'll see you around.
She's like, okay.
It's nice meeting you.
His name is Sam.
And she rolls up her window, gets back on the road.
Like, what do you do?
You know, what are your options?
This is a great question.
What do you do?
Because, like, you go to the police and they're like,
oh, we can't help you, lady.
Like, what the fuck?
A guy was weird?
A guy was weird with you?
Like, we don't give a fuck.
I mean, unfortunately, I think a lot of people
have been in that position.
It's like, yeah, famously, like, like cops don't care about stalkers.
Not great in this type of situation.
So not five minutes later driving, she is stopped.
A car is broken down in the road and it is his Jeep and he comes out of the car and now
he's wearing his arm in a sling,
which I don't think he was a moment ago.
And he waves her down and is saying,
roll down your window again.
Like I need to talk to you.
She pulls over.
He's blocking the road.
His Jeep is sideways.
Oh, okay.
And she stops and talks to him,
clearly very nervous and uncomfortable.
And he says,
could you help me push it to the side of the road?
Like get it out of the road.
I can put it in neutral.
It's hard to do with my arm in a sling.
No, I can't.
And it should be easy.
We'll just be able to push it over the side.
She says, no, I can call a tow truck company for you.
And he says, please, like, it'll be so fast.
And she says, no, what can I, is there a gas station around there?
Someone I can call for you.
He's like, why don't I, I'll just get in there.
If you can take me to the nearest gas station.
She says, nope.
Like, I'm not doing that.
I was very proud of her.
I really thought she was going to give in to one of these things.
And she didn't.
I hate to hear that.
I'm starting to shoot something about what's going to happen to her anyway.
But it's nice to know she tried.
Yeah.
And so he's not stopped. He's's not backing down he's just like please please
like coming closer like leaning on the car like just give me a ride i know where the gas station
is it'll be so fast and she just kind of floors it around a little bit of off-roading like he's
some of the road is still open so she just drives around she's like she says i gotta go i'm late for a meeting and drives away which i was
proud of but we're still doesn't work on this very isolated road have you guys been in like this part
of the pacific northwest the twilight part i don't think so no it's so gorgeous but it is so vast
that it is a little scary.
I remember being there.
I might have told you this story, Emily.
When I was with my friend, we stopped and turned off the lights of the car to look out
at the stars, which were beautiful because there was not a single light.
It's just forest for miles and miles.
And I got so scared.
light like it's just forest for miles and miles and I got so scared like I'm not normally scared of the dark but being in like true true darkness surrounded by woods I was like I'm getting back
like turn the lights on get I want to be back in the car like I just felt it was like similarly
it felt like floating in the middle of an ocean like I was just like I don't know anything that's
around me right now I was so scared it sounds scary it's very
scary it's like hurtling through space yes exactly it just you feel so small you feel so small so
small and also so much like I think it's because we recap horror movies all the time that I feel
this way but in those quiet still dark moments I am 100 certain there is a man standing just out out of my field of vision who
will attack yeah i am i am actually certain of it every single time i'm in a situation like that
yeah so hard to hard to enjoy the stars yeah weirdly i always think it's animals i'm like well
a bear is a wolf is hunting me right now, a mountain lion. It's probably more likely.
I don't mean, yeah, maybe.
There's a whole argument happening online right now
about what's more dangerous, a bear or a man.
Oh, well, a man.
To a woman.
Obviously, it's a man.
But which is more likely to be in the woods
where you are?
Probably a bear.
Yes.
Nonetheless, a man is still probably more dangerous
in that situation than a bear is
i think a man is more dangerous in every situation yeah it's true every situation true so she
drives some more nighttime again she stops at a rest stop no so isolated so like it's it's
essentially also only men that she sees there's like like a long haul trucker also at the rest stop.
And he doesn't even like look at her.
He like just goes to the bathroom, gets back in his truck and drives away.
But it's just like there's nobody out here.
Not comforting.
Yeah.
And so she finally calls her mom back.
Her mom says something like, I think this was too soon for
you to move. I wish we had talked about this more. And she says, it's been six months. It's time for
me to move on. Which like, if it's been six months since your husband died, it's not time for you to
move on. That seems really fast. So there is no time. No. You know?
No.
But maybe it's that she wanted to be away from reminders of him or something like that.
But it seems that whatever this tragedy that has occurred is has, you know,
strained her relationships with her parents.
And it just seems like a tough time for all of them, understandably.
But she wasn't living with her parents.
No, but nearby.
They lived in the same town.
Okay.
Okay.
So she's moving further away from them.
Quite far, it would seem.
Quite far.
Two days worth of drive so far.
Yeah.
And wouldn't you know it, as she's talking to her mom,
in pulls a Jeep into this rest stop.
She says, Mom, I got to go. No. Hangs up on her mom in pulls a jeep god damn into this rest stop she says mom i gotta go no hangs up on her mom yeah that was that could be a mistake i'd say i would say mom someone's been following me
on the road for two days here's her license plate can you look him up i mean i guess if you have a
strained relationship with your mom but yeah i don't like it. No. She immediately gets back in her car,
and he gets out of his car, and he's yelling at her,
like, hey, stop, stop.
I just want to talk to you.
Oh.
And she's driving away.
He runs right up to the car again,
and she gets stopped behind another car,
and he bumps into her car and is like knocking on
the window like please like I just want to talk to you and then the car in front of her moves and
she peels out again and she's freaked out and driving really fast and what do you think what
do you think you would do in this moment? I would call 911, honestly.
I would be like, I'm being followed by a man.
This is his license plate.
Like he's harassing me.
Yeah.
And I don't know what to do.
Like, can you tell me what to do?
And they would probably be like, nothing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But maybe they could help.
And also just like tell people, like tell as many people as possible.
Yeah.
I think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So some headlights appear behind her
and she's driving faster and she calls 911.
She does do exactly that.
Great.
And I also feel like this isn't logical
and it might like really backfire
because you could fuck up your own car.
But what if you just like hit his car
while it's parked and fuck his car up? Yeah. And then try to drive away. Or you could fuck up your own car, but what if you just like hit his car while it's parked and fuck his car up?
Yeah.
And then try to drive away.
Or you could slash his tires.
That would probably be better.
Might be hard to get out of your car though and get at him to slash his tires,
you know,
without him like drive into his car.
So here,
I hope we're never in this situation,
but in this moment I'm thinking,
are you driving his car?
Are you fuck his car up somehow?
And either then he can't really drive it, or also maybe you cause a scene
and cops just come and you can say, hey, this guy's been following me
and scaring me, and that's why I hit his car.
And either way, there's more people on the scene.
Yeah.
I mean, if you actually knew he was dangerous, I feel like you would need to,
like, this is so crazy.
Drive into him?
No, no.
You would need to like stop at a like car dealership or like a used car place and be
like, I'll give you my car for another car.
Like, let me switch cars.
Yeah.
And if someone comes, like, don't tell them or else I'm dead.
Thank you.
Love you.
Bye.
Thank you so much.
Bye.
Let's do it as fast as possible.
I don't give a shit.
I think you have to cause some sort of public scene and i need to leave my u-haul trailer here knock with
all my possessions i know later but it is an identifying thing yeah honestly if you like think
you're gonna be murdered by someone it's kind of like yeah you can come back for that later yeah
but i guess the whole point is you never really think you're gonna be murdered right you just
think this guy's scary and he's taking it too far.
But you probably don't think he's really going to take it.
I don't know.
As far as I guess he might be about to take it.
Part of me thinks that like if even the second he showed up at that motel,
I really think in my head, I'd be like, he's going to murder me.
Like, I really think I think that.
I genuinely think I would think that.
Yeah, I think I would, too. Maybe because we do a horror movie a week. Yeah, maybe.
But also because I just fucking read the news and that shit happens to women a lot.
People murder people. People murder women. It's true.
I will say that Jenna and I had some car trouble on Friday and as we were reading through the manual, trying to figure out how to
fix it, a man was walking down, we were in an alleyway and knocked on her window and did the
roll down the window sign. And she rolled down her window and I had just watched this the night
before. And I was just like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And he was just trying to help,
but it was scary. That's scary. Okay. 9-1-1 and ever then everything's solved
exactly it well she dials 9-1-1 and it's ringing and this really made me laugh she goes pick up
pick up pick up like they're gonna pick up they're just out they're just out and about wait no i did
see that there is shortage of 9-1-1 responders like there are people who are on hold to 9-1-1
because people don't want to do that job
because it's a really fucked up job and they're not getting paid enough.
Yeah, it does seem like a hard job. So she is saying exactly, I am being followed by someone.
I think he's behind me right now. I don't know who he is. And she says, what's your location?
She says, I don't really know. I don't know what to do. And the car behind her overtakes her, and it's not the Jeep.
It's somebody else.
It was just someone that wanted to drive faster.
So she says, okay, it wasn't him.
That was a false alarm.
And the 911 operator says, well, why don't I connect you to one of our officers and you can tell them more about the situation rather than just like, all right, bye.
Sounds good.
Wasn't him.
Guess you're fine.
So that's good.
That's reassuring.
That's good.
At least they want to know more about the situation.
And so she's waiting on hold now to be connected to an officer.
And so she's waiting on hold now to be connected to an officer when the U-Haul starts flailing around, almost like it's hydroplaning.
It's really loud.
And it's like maybe the connection is coming undone.
You don't really know what's happening, but it's causing her to swerve and lose control of the car. so she kind of half crashes onto the side of the road
and the car doesn't seem damaged but she just like loses control of it and
is off to the side of the road now grabs a flashlight goes out to look and had the tire
a tire on the u-haul has been slashed like very obviously slashed and so was it the jeep and it
slashed at her tire while passing her no no the jeep wasn't what passed her it was an that wasn't
him oh that must have happened back at the rest at the rest stop when he ran up to the car and it Oh, okay, okay. And she's, again, panicking,
headlights approaching.
This time, of course, it is the Jeep.
He gets out with a tire iron
or like a metal wrench thing
that you would use to potentially change a flat wheel,
change a car tire.
And she's in her car, locks the doors, looks very
scared. And he just walks up full speed, smashes her passenger side window. She's screaming. He
unlocks the door, like lets himself in, punches her. Oh my God. And she's trying to fight back, but he pulls out a thing and injects her with something.
And she is unconscious, cut to black.
Oh my, he is so bad.
He's very bad.
Oh God.
I mean, obviously this was going somewhere bad, but oh, I just really hate it.
I hate it too. it's best to get worse
i know i know i know oh well part of me it's like oh like why do we keep making movies or like
couldn't he be a guy and she'd be a woman in a way that would make it more interesting but it's like
of course men are constantly doing this to us yeah stop it stop it i feel like in horror movies it's usually a female protagonist and
i understand why i feel i feel like it's you know nice to see at the end of a horror movie a
woman prevail against but of course i would also love to see just other versions of that doesn't
always have to be this obviously i don't want to just reverse because that wouldn't be like, I mean, it'd be interesting for one movie, but it wouldn't necessarily solve the problem, which I'm trying to solve, which is that I'm just sick of hearing about like men being bad.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay, great.
So it's about to get so much worse.
Yeah.
We get another title card that says The River.
Great. Oh, fucking great. I don another title card that says The River. Great.
Oh, fucking great.
You know what?
I don't want, that doesn't seem like a better place to go.
I forgot about the first title card.
And we see Jessica waking up in a basement.
There's nothing in there.
She's not tied to anything, but it's a locked room. There's one small window at ground
level, so it's above her. She has to kind of pull herself up to be able to look out of it.
And she's, you know, screaming for help, but she can see that they're still in the middle of the
forest. There's probably not anybody around except for this guy. He eventually comes into the room and she says, what do you want from me? Do you want money?
I can pay you anything. Just say what you want. I'm not going to tell anybody. You don't have to
worry about that. I won't tell anybody. And he's just looking at her
with this very creepy look on his face. And he says, do you think you're the first one to say
that? Oh, really bad. Really bad. You really, really don't want to hear that he's done this
before. No. And then he tells her to take her clothes off she says she needs to use the
bathroom first and he looks kind of amused by this he says okay yeah sure like go use the bathroom
and steps out of her path towards the door which is unlocked into the rest of the house. And she runs for the door.
He obviously knew she was going to do this.
And so he's right behind her and he actually pushes her while she's running.
So with like extra force,
she smacks her head on the wall and is,
yeah,
just hurt now and trying to fight him off, but he just basically bear hugs her and is
holding her still. And he pulls her phone out of her pocket, I think. And, or it's,
there's no reception, I think. So it's not like she could have been calling for help this
whole time. But he opens her like recently watched thing and sees a video of her with her husband.
And he's making her watch it. She's crying. This is, I think, the most awful scene in the movie.
This is, I think, the most awful scene in the movie.
It's just so, oh, it's so uncomfortable.
It's filmed really close up.
So you just see they're laying down and he's holding her, like forcefully holding her so she can't move. And like holding this video right in front of her face.
And he's laying his head on top of her head.
So they're like cheek to cheek watching this video.
And he says like, oh, you're cute together.
Do you think he's worried about you right now?
And she tells him that he's dead and he died.
And he says, how did he die?
And she says, by suicide.
And she's crying all while saying this. And he says, how did he die? And she says, by suicide. And she's crying all while saying this.
And he says, how did he commit suicide?
No.
And she says, with a gun.
And she's sobbing.
And he says, oh, that's tough.
That's really tough.
And he's stroking her face a little bit.
And now she's really really crying and as if he's comforting her
about her husband and not the horrible situation that he's put her in he's like it's okay it's
okay like let it out like it's gonna be okay and then you see her kind of lose the energy to fight
back and she kind of goes limp and he gets up and he leaves and locks her
back in there it's so interesting because like women are always like what do you want like i'll
give you money like what do you want and it's like they just want you to want to be there
or they just want to exert their power over you and know that they have it.
Exactly.
But like one form of that is like them comforting you and you being their like little pet and like it's so fucked up.
I think you'd have to in this situation.
Yeah.
Play that game.
Try to do whatever it is.
Yeah.
You'd have to play that game.
Absolutely.
Take it as far as you have to to get out of there.
It's kind of your only option.
Yeah.
Really hate that.
I hate it too.
Yeah.
So the next day she sees his Jeep drive off and she gets in this kind of mode of trying to figure out a plan.
She pulls a nail out of the wall.
Really smart.
And uses it to pick the lock on the door and picks it like so fast.
And I was very impressed.
I was like, I feel like I should learn how to pick a lock.
This was really impressive.
I would not know how to do that.
And as she does, she hears the car coming
back. And so she's walking through his house, but then through the window, like sees the Jeep
parking again. She's not going to be able to get out. He's parking like right by the front door
and she's right by the front door and there's a closet right there. So she hides in the closet as he walks in, and he has some groceries with him,
and he sits down at a table like right, you know, 10 feet away from where she is
and pulls out this huge hunting knife and starts just eating cheese and beef jerky he's slicing cheese making little
cheese and beef jerky sandwiches honestly looks pretty good that's my little turkey taco i had
this is my kind of meal but we watch it for so long i noticed it's very tense because you're, if this were to happen, it would just be like a
painfully long moment of like, well, he could just sit there and eat that for 30 minutes. Like you
don't fucking know how long he's going to sit there. And you know, the way movies are paced,
you don't usually sit in those types of moments for very long. Yeah. And so I just thought that
was interesting that you just sit and watch him eat cheese for what felt like five minutes. I'm sure it was faster than
that, but it felt like a long time. That's how long it takes to sit and eat cheese. Yeah.
And it's, you know, demonstrating that he has this huge knife. So it's serving that purpose as well.
And then his phone rings. And of course, he answers it.
Hi, sweetie.
How are you doing?
Oh, the work trip's going great.
I wish you could be here.
I miss you.
Like, how's our daughter?
Put her on the phone.
And then he talks to a little girl and says like, oh, I miss you so much.
Daddy's going to be home soon.
Horrifying stuff.
Really bad.
Really, really bad.
And he ends the phone call and he gets up, finds the key to the basement.
She's, you know, watching him through the little crack of the closet so she can see what he's doing and can tell that he's about to go back into the basement where he thinks she is. And so as he turns the corner and goes out of sight, she just runs out the front door in a way that's like he's obviously going to be right behind you. It's shouldn't do it too quietly, but he would have found out that she wasn't in the room momentarily anyway so i guess it doesn't matter yeah and she
fucking runs barefoot as fast as she can she's through the woods it's i feel like the second
i can't see a road from the woods i'm like well i'm lost and i'm gonna be trapped in these woods
forever like like how the fuck are you ever supposed to know what direction anything is?
It's so easy to get lost.
But, you know, all she knows, she needs to get away from this man wherever,
anywhere is better than here.
So she's just running, running, running, running, running.
We see that he is following behind her, but she's got a pretty good head start.
Until she gets a twig embedded in
her foot like stabs through her foot fucking damn it in a way that i hadn't seen done in a movie
before it's horizontal it doesn't go in like through the bottom of the foot out the top of
the foot it goes in like parallel to the sole of her foot so you see it
under her skin like like for four inches it's just this like round or lifted oh it's so gross
and she has to pull it out screaming in pain but you better not scream baby baby. It'd be hard not to, but yeah.
I mean, you should really try not to.
You should really try as hard as you can.
But yes, she does scream, and so he's close behind her,
and he's getting closer now because he can hear where she is.
And she pulls the twig out and runs a little bit further
but gets to a river that blocks the path, a big, like a rapids type of river.
And he catches up to her and so now is blocking the other way to go.
So she's caught between him and this river and he's looking at her like, I got you.
There's nowhere else to go.
And she jumps in those rapids, which was the right call.
But so scary.
You don't know if there's like a huge waterfall immediately.
Like you could definitely die, but you definitely don't want to go back the other way.
I mean, I think I'd rather die that way, probably.
Yeah.
I mean, I think you're also in the psyche of this woman whose husband just killed himself and she's probably
like i would rather fucking like go this way and have to deal with this other dude yeah let's just
go yeah yeah so she's we see an overhead shot of her uh going that river, going under, being absolutely pummeled by the force of the
water and cut to black again. Another title card, the rain. Oh, we see her sometime later waking up
wherever she has washed up at the end of this river. So she's like on the rocky shore and
she's all beaten up. She looks bad. she's got like a black guy and a busted lip
because he's punched her he's she's got her foot wound now so she like finds a big stick to use as
a walking stick she's limping it's it's not looking great she's in the middle of the woods
uh there's no idea where she is i mean now is when i now i would start being worried about a wild animal this is yeah this is when i was like oh now it is alone in the tv show it is
turned into that because nature is quite a formidable opponent as well
i would still personally rather rather go up against nature than I would man. I would too.
Although killed by a bear would be really bad.
No, that would be really bad.
Well, I mean, hopefully the bear would like get you somewhere.
That's not how bears do it.
That's not how bears do it. You haven't listened to enough tooth and claw.
You want to get killed by a mountain lion, maybe even a coyote or a wolf.
But a bear, that's not how bears do it.
How does a bear kill you?
Just tell me.
Well, they eat you as long as you stay alive.
They just snack on you and leave you alive.
And they just take bites and snack and you stay alive for a really long time.
There was one woman, I mean, anyone that is interested in horror stories of a different
kind, Tooth and Claw, our friends at Tooth and Claw tell.
Our friends at Tooth and Claw told the most horrifying story I've ever heard in my entire life.
And it is real and it is so.
It was a woman that a bear essentially sat on top of her and ate her arms and legs while she was alive.
Alive for hours?
For hours.
Yeah.
So.
And that's when she lived?
No, I think she died.
No, no.
Oh, OK. but they know that
she died a slow painful death a slow painful terrible death that's what that's what bears do
they they just want to snack on you and they want you to be alive as long as possible so that means
stays fresh and warm really bad i think it is probably it it might be the worst way to is that
all bears not all bearsag not all bears.
I don't know. We're going to have to ask.
We got to ask a bear expert because I don't actually know.
Because I have been hiking before and have seen bears.
And I've been scared, but I haven't been like, I'm going to die a slow, painful death scared.
I think you can avoid the situation by knowing bear behavior which you can learn more
about yes bears aren't um vengeful the way that men are you know and most bears don't want to
kill a human at all yeah but i think should you find yourself in a situation where a bear has
decided it must kill and eat you it's a really bad way to go yeah but again far less likely than a human deciding
to do that yeah and humans can kill you slowly too you know they sure can oof but so she's walking
barefoot now in the forest with a wound on her foot and i bet it's cold yeah and like she's wet
so yeah hypothermia yes i think rain is coming probably. Yeah, in this section it's called the rain. Someone mentioned rain.
And the actor Jules Wilcox who plays Jessica,
she did break her foot while filming.
No.
And I always think about that when like part of the story
is you just running as fast as you can through the woods
for a lot of it.
Seems like, yeah, you could hurt yourself.
through the woods for a lot of it seems like, yeah, you could hurt yourself.
Doesn't sound like the most fun thing to do in a movie.
So she is running on empty.
She is now, she's not running anymore.
She's got her little walking stick. She is trudging through these woods looking absolutely exhausted.
And she hears footsteps a
like twig crack and footsteps and she hides herself behind a tree she holds her walking
stick as a you know weapon now and she's hearing these footsteps approaching and as they get to her
she just swings the walking stick and hits this guy who is not sam it's a hunter like a
man hunting in the in the woods he's got his bright orange vest on and his gun and she realizes you
know immediately obviously it's not him and he's so surprised it's like what the fuck are you doing
and like aims his gun at her because he has a gun and he's being attacked so and she
immediately like drops the stick puts her hands up she's like please please please like you have
to help me please help me please help me he looks so confused that has no what's going on what's
happening she says like i'm being i was kidnapped by a man he's following me he's gonna come here
i'd like need do you have a phone can you call 9-1-1 doesn't have reception
but he you know puts his gun down and and just like okay i'll i'll help you like tell me what's
happening and she you know tells him her situation they go back to his car. He gives her his wife's boots are in the car and not his wife's,
not his wife's.
This is a real,
I'm so scared.
I'm so scared.
I am so scared.
This is very funny because yeah,
I was like,
he's talking about his wife too much.
Is this because then he gives him her a sandwich because this is my wife's
sandwich.
And he says,
my wife makes such great sandwiches.
My wife's my real wife, my living makes such great sandwiches my wife's my real life my living wife she's a real person and he's gonna drive her to the police
station and so they're they're driving now and there is a tree obstructing the road like a fallen
tree huge tree that she immediately starts screaming, panicking,
runs out to try to lift the tree.
It's enormous.
It's like a redwood or whatever they have there,
and you're not going to be able to lift that.
She's calling to him, like, help me lift the tree.
He's like, we're not going to be able to move that tree.
And she says, I feel like he did this.
Like, did he do this?
This is, he's going to catch us and it's dangerous.
And as she's saying that the Jeep is pulling up behind them and out comes Sam and he's talking on the phone and he says, yes, yes, I found her.
Thank you, officer.
Yes, she did it again, but it's OK.
I got her.
It's like she's safe.
She's safe.
No.
And this guy that picked her up is his name is Robert.
Robert is looking confused again. He's having a very unexpected day and he's like, who are you?
What's happening?
And he says, I'm so sorry, sir.
Like that.
You'll have to excuse my sister.
Jessica is screaming.
I'm not your sister
motherfucker and sam is cool as a cucumber saying she's been having a really hard time lately
this is she's been you know having these episodes and you know she is in treatment for this, but she ran away. And like, can you just help me get her back into the car?
And all while Jessica's like screaming, he's lying, he's lying, he's lying.
But like, he's created a situation where she just looks crazy.
It's going to look crazy.
And Sam says, we've, you know, I'm sorry.
We had a tragedy in the family recently.
Her husband killed himself and she's just
hasn't handled it well. And she's screaming, he's lying. He's lying.
Emily just fully has her hands over her face, head hung low.
I am so upset right now. I'm so upset right now.
It's also just like men have done that to women for so long
said they're crazy and put them into mental asylums and like it's fucking makes me so mad
and just like so mad about it knowing that this man is going to trust this other man as opposed
to the woman he found beaten in the woods screaming alone he meets a man with
a story and he goes oh that sounds right to me oh that man looks calm to me that man is a calm man
you'll be glad to know he does not do that okay great great he is very suspicious but is he gonna
die anyway right and so sam grabs jessica and she like punches him and runs and he's about to run after her. Robert pulls the gun on him, says, don't move. Oh, God, Robert. Oh, God, Robert. And Jessica is yelling, like, ask to see his phone. Like if he just got off the phone with the cops, like ask to see his phone. See if his last call was to the cops and call the cops. Like if it wasn't like call the cops.
his last call was to the cops and call the cops like if it wasn't like call the cops and oh no he did call the cops and robert says like you're right i would feel better if we just got the cops
out here to make sure that this is a safe situation for her like i'm not gonna help you get her until
we have someone confirm that you know what you're saying is true so great for robert and sorry
robert so sorry for what's about to happen to you so
as sam is handing him his phone he lowers the gun for a second and sam of course attacks him
punches the shit out of him grabs his gun from him shoots him in the head robert is dead oh
robert you did so well robert you did everything you could yeah that's so sad though I suppose what
we do is we don't even try to take his phone we just use our phone to call the cops and we hold
a gun on this man until they arrive he doesn't have reception oh motherfucker you shoot him in
the leg shoot him in the legs Sam probably also does not have reception I need to buy a gun
we need to be somewhere with reception. It actually does remind me.
Well, I'm not going to.
I was going to talk about a part in Shogun, but you haven't finished it.
So never mind.
I'm not going to talk about a part in Shogun, but just finish Shogun, okay?
No spoilers.
Also, I'm kidding about buying a gun.
I would never buy a gun.
Yeah, don't buy a gun.
Nobody should buy a gun.
Obviously, I would never buy a gun.
I do want to learn how to pick a lock, though.
Yeah.
I do want to learn how to shoot a man in his legs.
They've got classes for that, I'm sure.
I'm here for the legs class, the shooting in the legs class.
I would like to learn how to shoot legs of a man.
Just legs of a man.
Not women, just men.
Sorry.
I'm sorry.
Anyone who's causing harm.
Any, the legs of any harmful attacker. Even a bear. Including bears. Including bears. Even'm sorry. Anyone who's causing harm. The legs of any harmful attacker.
Even a bear.
Including bears.
I want to shoot. Teach me how to shoot
bad legs.
Just legs.
So now we get
another title card
that says the night.
I guess it was raining through all of that
as well.
Wait! Where's the rain? I really got upset for a minute that there was no rain. I guess it was raining through all of that as well. Oh, okay.
Wait, where's the rain?
I really got upset for a minute that there was no rain.
Also, I thought she was going to actually be alone for a while.
Would have been better.
I thought that was why it was called Alone.
Would have been better is what we're learning.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I was like, ooh, this movie's getting interesting.
It's like now she's alone and it's against Mother Nature.
That is interesting.
No, no, that's not.
It's a man again.
No, it's still a man.
It's still a man again no it's still a man at least now is pouring rain and she's once again being pursued by sam he's right behind her but the
the rain provides some nice sound cover so she can at least run without him being able to necessarily
hear where she is okay and it's nighttime again so it's dark so
she's it seems like a best case scenario for she's got boots now yeah for actually being able to
outrun or hide from him and like evade him and she hides in this hollowed tree stump
sees his flashlight pointing in her direction so she's just like
laying low laying low flashlight goes away she goes to continue running away and he shoots her
right in the in the shoulder and she keeps running and stumbles upon this small pond that she goes into.
So, and there's, you know, bushes and trees everywhere.
There's like so much, so many plants covering where she is.
So she's in this little pond surrounded by plants.
So she's pretty out of sight and the rain stops, which now if she moves, he will hear her most likely.
And he's nearby, he's probably 20 feet away,
and he's yelling out into the woods like,
I know you're close.
I know I shot you.
I know I got you.
I give you about two hours before you bleed to death.
Might as well come out now and fight me while you still can.
And he says, I'll even play
fair. And he holds up his gun, or I guess, no, he took the gun from Robert and he lays it down.
And he says, you have one minute to come grab the gun. And she's close enough. We're just seeing
her eyes like staring at this gun that looks pretty close to her and him giving some space between the gun and himself.
So it's like she could go and grab it, but is that the right idea?
Do you stay hidden?
I would stay hidden.
I'm absolutely staying hidden.
and he's taunting her again about her husband's suicide saying you know people that commit suicide usually have warning signs and usually have cries for help that they might have given to whatever
like the people closest to them like that must make you feel really bad like he probably
had some sort of sign that you missed and you couldn't help him.
So he's like egging her on to thinking like,
oh, she'll come, you know,
essentially baiting her with the gun and taunting her.
And he says, show me you're better than your coward of a husband.
Bitch.
She doesn't move.
She stays hidden.
Good.
And then he yells out, I'm going to get you, you delicious fucking bitch.
Ugh.
Ugh.
But again, proud of her, she stays put.
And the rain starts up again.
He walks off, doesn't see her.
But for this being, like, a huge force, he always seems to be, like, right there.
Yeah. He's tailing her pretty good
Uh, we get another title card that says the clearing don't like the sound of that sounds like nowhere to hide
But we see her wake up. It's morning now. This is giving eden lake so many things
It did remind me a lot of Eden Lake, but she's
didn't bleed to death. So that's good. That's great. And we're again, seeing more overhead
shots of just the never ending trees around her. And she starts walking through the forest i guess just picking a direction seeing if she can see anybody and comes across
sam he doesn't see her but she hears someone and sees that it is him he parks his jeep somewhere in
like near her and pulls out robert's dead body from the trunk. So he's disposing of Robert's body.
He's got a shovel.
He's digging a grave about, I don't know, 30 feet from the Jeep.
And so Jessica sees the Jeep open and him far away from it.
So she sneaks towards it Climbs in the Jeep.
Oh, my God.
I wouldn't do this.
No keys.
No keys.
Of course no keys.
No.
And now he's done and just walking back.
And she finds his phone is in the car.
She grabs his phone and she slinks into the back seat without him seeing as he's getting back in the car.
And she's able to climb into the trunk of the car.
And she has his tire iron thing and his phone.
And she's just wide-eyed, pressed against the back of the back seat
so that she's not visible in his rear view mirror.
And he gets into the car and kind of looks around as if.
Yeah, but she left like mud and she was in a pond and rained on and bloody.
I don't know.
We didn't see it.
It didn't look too, but he can tell something is weird.
Yeah, there's probably something.
And he's just like, huh?
Oh, man, you just really hate that because if she hadn't tried to
get into the like he was just gonna drive away yeah this was a mistake like he gets into his
car to drive away but i guess she thought that she was gonna die if she was left alone in the
woods so she like needed to get out yeah i don't know i mean yeah and if the keys had been in the
car it would have been worth it.
But who does that?
Nobody leaves their keys in their car.
No, they really don't.
No.
I locked my keys in my car recently, and I've really never do that.
And it was quite a pain in the ass.
Yeah.
So don't leave your keys in your car.
Don't leave your keys in your car.
And don't bank on a murderer leaving his keys in his car.
High risk gamble to take.
Yeah.
So he starts the car.
We're driving off.
She very quietly dials 911.
The sound of the engine is covering her a bit and so she's whispering
i've been kidnapped please trace this call and he's not hearing it so that's good so she's at
least able to make this call to 911 and then we see him reach into the glove or center compartment thing where his phone
was, where she found his phone, like looking for his phone, seeing that it's gone. He stops the car.
He's looking all around for it. What the fuck? Where is it? And then he gets this, like narrows
his eyes and looks up into the rear view mirror. Like he's putting two and two together, although it's a kind of crazy conclusion to draw.
But he is looking like he knows she's back there and she senses this.
And so she just launches at him with that tire iron and like hits him in the head over and over with this metal pole.
And his head is like bleeding. It's looking. These are good hits. She pole, and his head is, like, bleeding.
These are good hits.
She's not holding back, obviously.
Great, great.
And he floors it.
So now she's attacking him while this car is moving.
She uses it to strangle him.
She's, like, pressing the bar around his throat
and trying to strangle him.
He's just driving faster and faster
and faster. He looks like he's reaching for the knife in his belt. She sees that and grabs it
first and stabs him in the arm. And they crash. Of course they crash. And the car flips a bunch,
they crash. Of course they crash. Of course. And the car flips a bunch, but they both survive. But he's pretty incapacitated at first and she's able to crawl out. And my girl, she brings her,
she brings the cell phone and that tire iron. She's not leaving the car empty handed. She's
not letting go of her weapon and she's not letting go of the phone, which I appreciate.
go of her weapon and she's not letting go of the phone which i appreciate and we see a helicopter flying overhead but we're still in thick forest and so you know she's not going to be easily
visible from the sky and so she's calling out i'm a clearing and god damn it this is maybe good
the helicopter will be able to see her when it comes back this way but it's not there right now
and she looks at the phone in her hand dials holds the phone to her ear, and we hear a little girl answer saying, hi, daddy.
She says, let me talk to your mom.
She says, what?
Who are you?
She says, let me talk to your mom.
Puts mom on the phone.
She asks her, do you know where your husband is right now?
Says, what?
Who is this?
He's what?
He's at a conference in California. Says, no, he's not. No, he's not. Your husband is a kidnapper. Your husband is a murderer. And we see now that Sam has gotten out of the wreck as well and has knife in hand and is coming towards her.
once he gets into earshot and hears what she's saying,
she says, oh, do you want to talk to him?
Like, he's here right now.
Puts it on speakerphone and says, like, talk to your wife.
Like, tell your wife where you are right now.
And we hear the wife on speakerphone being like,
Sam, what's going on?
Where are you?
What's happening?
And Jessica says, my name is Jessica Swanson, and if this is the last time you hear from me, it's because
your husband killed me. Fuck yes. Just like he
killed a man named Robert
who they're probably looking for
in the woods in this location.
And I was, yeah, it was so
satisfying. I kept
being like, say your name, say your fucking name.
Give some credibility.
Yes. Hell yes.
And the wife is you know like sam oh my god
like what is happening what is what is going on and sam says i mean bad phone call to receive
yeah that would be really bad uh sam just hangs up she like tosses the phone to him and he just
like says i think he says like i'll call like says, I think he says like, I'll call you later.
Really?
He says something?
He says like, bye.
And hangs up.
Does the phone immediately ring?
Because I'm doing an immediate callback on that.
Hang up.
I'd be like, uh-oh.
No, no, no.
You're going to talk to me right now.
And they kind of square off Sam and Jessica just facing each other.
He has tears in his eyes now.
She's ruined his life, that bitch.
And they're both in these fighting stances,
her with her tire iron and him with his knife.
And we go into hand-to-hand combat.
I mean, I guess that's what it can come down to.
Which one would you rather have?
Tire iron, I think.
I think so, too.
I think it can get more damage with less skill.
Yeah, I agree.
Yep.
And more distance.
Although you did say it was a big hunting knife.
It's a big hunting knife.
I know.
No, a knife is, I mean. You're a blunt object kind of hunting knife. But you know, I'm a... I know. No, a knife is...
I mean...
You're a blunt object kind of girl.
Yeah.
You know, I like a fire poker if given the choice.
And a tire iron is not dissimilar.
Yeah.
Just a little shorter.
That's what I would choose as well.
So seems like she's got the upper hand at first.
She does get another good blow in with the tire iron.
And then he punches her. you know it's we're
fighting fists are flying knives are flying and he's strangling her and why isn't he like killing
her with his knife though i think she must have like knocked it out of his hand okay he also
probably wants to enjoy it you know he's probably no at this point motherfucker don't
you want it to be over i don't know don't ask me i mean this ain't my cup of tea put yourself in
this man's shoes i would i would want it to be over yeah i wanted to be over the whole time And she at one point bites the part of his arm that she stabbed and takes like a chunk out.
Like spits it out.
Ew.
Ugh.
Gnarly.
And he's screaming in pain.
And after she does that, she sees the knife on the ground, grabs it, stabs him in the stomach.
Woo!
Great. Okay, Jessica. She sees the knife on the ground, grabs it, stabs him in the stomach. Woo!
Great.
Okay, Jessica.
This is why maybe you want the knife, honestly,
because the knife can do more damage than a tie-dye. But I think you can use the tie-dye to get that knife.
Yeah, and I think if push comes to shove,
I'm aiming for head smacks just as much as possible.
Yeah, right.
You know, if you slice an arm, a leg,
if you hit somebody with the knife,
but you don't get the blade,
like it just feels,
if you know what you're doing with a hunting knife,
definitely,
definitely.
But if you don't know what you're doing,
if I'm just swinging out ahead,
defending myself,
I'm trying to hit a head.
I'm trying to hit a knee.
I'm just go.
I'm just going.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You can go wild with that.
You can go absolutely wild.
And you know,
it,
it worked.
She ended up with the knife and
she stabbed him in the stomach and she's on top of him not dissimilar to the way that he was on top
of her earlier and she is staring into his eyes as he dies and she's Okay, so he is dying. He is dying. And she rolls off of him and lays next to him.
And they turn and look at each other while he dies.
He fully dies.
And she is covered in blood and mud and.
Has been shot in the shoulder.
Has been shot in the shoulder.
And she's. Crazy so wide-eyed yeah has not blinked in you know 30 minutes and and she's laying on her back looking up at the sky
and we just hear a helicopter getting louder until it's overhead and we see her like hair blowing in the wind of the
helicopter and that's the end of the movie oh wow i am worn out me too i really feel like i went
through something yeah i like these kinds of movies i like when it's, you know, less characters and just kind of a chase cat and mouse type thing.
I tend to enjoy those.
It does feel, I feel, I guess because I tend to enjoy those, I seek them out and I've seen a lot of them.
And so it feels a little like I've seen this movie already.
It didn't feel too new or exciting in any way.
Like you mentioned Eden Lake and I was like, well, Eden Lake I just watched and I think is better and I think it's better than this. But I don't know why I need to be mean about it. It was,
I had a good time. I don't think you're being mean. I just, it is, you know, I'm just saying
it's not my favorite movie, but I had a great, I had a great time and I thought it was very well
made. And I do remember thinking when we watched or when we talked about Sick, I remember thinking
that that was really well directed. And I, I, I think this guy is a good director what's his name John
Hyams and sick is also just kind of like non-stop pursuit and I like those high adrenaline movies
where it's just like you don't get time to relax yeah I think that's why i feel so tired there's no there was no lull like it just kept
just kept hitting it and it was nice because i didn't i didn't actually know aside from
the basic premise i didn't know much about it and so 20 minutes into it when she's just like being
followed by this guy i'm like what is this movie gonna be like
if like if we're already because usually it starts with like first act is
like getting to know our protagonist in their daily lives and like at the first act turn it's
like oh now we've run in with a stalker guy and this started pretty much immediately with being
stalked and i was like okay where do we go from here we just go and go and go and go and go and go and it just escalates and yeah so i yeah i like those kind of movies
that feel like yeah just non-stop i also liked she did make really smart decisions basically the
whole time like i we've talked about loving a competent
victim in these situations and she really did a great job yeah she did a great job and robert
did too it was nice to see and that made it more interesting because they didn't immediately do
the thing where the whole audience is like no don't do that thing it's like now they're doing
the thing that you would probably do too but But it is interesting because you do, obviously,
after being in a situation where she is kidnapped by this man,
obviously you're not going to trust the next guy that comes along.
And he was talking about his wife so much,
wouldn't shut the fuck up about his wife in a way that I was like,
well, this guy's obviously dangerous as well.
It's also so funny that it's called
alone. I mean, I know why it's called alone,
because she is
alone in a certain way, but she's not
really alone. There are other men
there. No, but she's able to be
kidnapped because she
was alone. There's no one with her
in her car.
Harder to kidnap two people at once.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Than just one.
This motherfucker just goes on quote unquote work retreats and takes syringes full of sedatives
and just looks for some lady to kill.
Also is like omniscient.
I mean, that's the other thing that frustrates me about these movies.
It's like you just keep showing up exactly where she is like all the time yeah i would have liked a little
some something to make that feel more realistic because it is just like this force is fucking
huge i feel like if you lost someone it would be so hard to find them again. If she went downriver? Let alone finding them like six times.
Yeah, maybe if he had put a tracker on her or something and she didn't know and it was explained as like, oh no, he actually, and then she has to dig it out or whatever.
Like that was in her neck when he injected her.
Something like that.
Then it would be like, oh, okay.
Because this forest is fucking big.
Really big, yeah.
But I still liked it.
I still liked it.
Wow.
Sammy, thank you.
You're welcome, Henley.
I love you.

That should send you into sleep.
Just have more faith in humanity for sure.
Yeah.
That won't make you think about men who have done terrible things to me.
Nope.
A real safe space.
Definitely not about a real life man who murdered women.
Yep.
And no real voices in this, I don't think.
