This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, bonus episode of January.
Of January. of January. I'm Emily here for you Tony heads. I'm Henley and I am here for you Tony heads now and forever. And I'm Tony Collette. Oh, there we go. Here she is.
Here all the way from Australia to be on my favorite podcast
oh my god wait sammy you know that my mom loves it when you do accents
my mom is gonna be so happy there's no way tony collette sounds like that that was like crocodile
dundee the thing about actors that are from different countries is i feel like they all have american
accents like charlie starin has an american accent now i feel like they their accent just
changes this is not true obviously of all actors from different countries but i don't think tony's
accent is very strong you know the weirdest one to me is me is Nicole Kidman because I never hear her
speak in an Australian accent. That's true.
That's true. She has
an accent. She just has like an actress
accent. You know what I mean?
She just speaks like an actress. Yeah.
She just speaks like Nicole Kidman speaks, but
hearing her use an Australian accent
is disorienting to me.
It's like I find
Robert Pattinson speaking with his regular British accent to be disorienting to me. It's like I find Robert Pattinson speaking with his
regular British accent to be disorienting.
So, second
bonus episode of the month. First one, we did
History of Slashers. Now
we are going to do a
recap of the
movie that inspired
the slashers to come,
which is Psycho.
And Sammy, give us those stats.
Well, it came out in 1960,
directed by Alfred Hitchcock,
written by Joseph Stefano,
based on the novel by Robert Block,
starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh,
Vera Miles, and John Gavin.
Great.
Love those stats.
Great stats. They're good stats. Perfect stats. It's available to rent for $ Gavin. Great. Love those stats. Great stats. They're good stats.
Perfect stats. It's available to
rent for $3.99.
I rented on Apple TV this time.
I usually rent on Amazon.
I did Amazon. And I decided I'm
going to split my money between our
corporate overlords.
Wow, yeah. It eats a
little piece of the pie.
A good old tech oligarchy that controls the world.
But yeah, we're just going to get right into a little bit of trivia on it.
Let's do it.
First, I will say it was nominated for four Oscars.
Wow.
Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction.
Did not win any of them.
Big loser.
That's interesting because the Oscars have a history of not recognizing things that are technically considered horror movies.
I don't know if they called this a horror movie or not.
They would have had to.
Yeah, I think at the time, people were disgusted by this film.
Right.
I will say I've seen so I watched it for this, but I also watched it in high school for film class and it scared the shit out of me.
I was so scared watching Psycho and I almost was bummed last night when I watched.
I like couldn't even recall
why I would
have been that scared like it was like
I was so far from feeling
scared by it and I do think partially it's because
when you know what happens that makes it a lot less
scary but I also just was like
this is it's great
but I
mean I've just been my brain is
in a different place now I mean that I've just been my brain is in a different place now.
I mean, that's a tremendous growth, Emily.
Thank you.
That's the purpose of the pod.
That's the purpose of the pod.
But yeah, it doesn't really hit the same way.
So do we know when it came out?
It sounds like it was really successful because it was nominated for these Academy Awards.
Yes.
But was it like a budgetary success?
Yes.
And you know what? Damn it, I didn't
write down the budget and the gross
but I
so it's a universal picture
and picture.
The picture is a movie.
A picture show.
And
they were certain that it was going to be a big flop.
And so Alfred Hitchcock deferred his normal salary for back end points.
So he would he normally would get two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in 1960.
That's a lot in 1960.
Yeah.
And there's a lot right now.
I would take it.
That's true.
Yeah, I take it. That's true. Yeah, I'd take it.
And instead
he got 60% of
the gross. Oh, and that's probably
good. And he ended up making
15 million instead of
250,000. That's why
you believe in yourself, baby. That's why you believe
in yourself. And where does
this line up in
Hitchcock's filmography?
It was right after North by Northwest and Vertigo.
And so he had just done, yeah, two like huge commercial success.
I think because there was not like women getting murdered on screen was not that did not have mass appeal.
Yeah, this was people were like, this film is disgusting.
Walt Disney said he would never allow Alfred Hitchcock to film on his lot because he made that disgusting film, Psycho.
Yeah, Disney.
They thought it was going to be a big flop.
Interesting.
Yeah.
a big flop interesting
yeah
and then the score
is by
Bernard Hermans and
Hitchcock was so happy
with the score that he doubled
his salary to
$34,501
which is
amazing here take some of my
$15 million I was gonna say,
you did such a good job for my movie.
That's the doubled, so it was
$15,000.
Yeah. Then that
extra $1 on there. I mean, it is really rare.
That doesn't happen anymore. Now,
if you do a really good job,
if you go above and beyond, people are like,
good, that's what you should have done. Always.
You go above and beyond or people are like, good, that's what you should have done. Always. You go above and beyond or you're fired.
Exactly.
Work till you die.
Any more trivia?
The only other thing I mean, I'm sure there's lots of trivia about this movie. I was scrolling
through a little bit on our trusty IMDB and the list just kept going and going and going.
Sure, sure, sure.
But one thing I wrote down to get us into our next order of business is that the original trailer for this movie was six and a half minutes long.
That's what played in the theaters was a six and a half minute trailer for this.
The trailer that we will be watching is not.
Great.
But imagine making a six and a half minute trailer.
It's too long. Can you trailer. It's too long.
Can you believe?
It's too long.
Too long.
Let's watch the dang trailer.
Let's do it.
You have a vacancy.
Oh, we have 12 vacancies.
You know, this is the first place it looks like it's hiding from the world.
I think that.
We're all in our private traps, clamped in them.
And none of us can ever get out.
Is anyone at home?
Oh, that must be my mother.
Is anything wrong?
Am I acting as if there's something wrong?
She's not missing so much as she's run away.
Put me down!
Mother! Oh, God! Mother!
What are you running away from?
She looked like a wrong one to you?
It's not as if she were a... a maniac.
She just goes a little mad sometimes.
She just goes a little mad sometimes.
That's fun.
I love his snacking.
He's a good snacker.
Also, good long neck.
He really is like that shot.
His neck is really well.
Also, all I can think about is that the line from Scream, I can think about Skeet saying
it. We all go a little mad sometimes.
All I can think
about is how much I miss Universal
Studios and going on that
backlot tour and
seeing the Bates Motel.
Yeah, did you guys watch
the series Bates Motel?
No. I never saw it either Queen Vera though Queen
exactly assistant queen to Tony assistant vice queen if you will she's next in line in the
succession Emily I can see why this would scare you in high school if you like didn't hadn't seen
it before and you're like don't like scary movies it's frightening for sure it really
definitely was very scary
the first time I saw it
I just I think I just
anticipated it still being
somewhat as scary for me and it
just very much was not but
but I think that is
has more to do with
knowing what happens
and I think so because it takes
away all of the suspense it takes away
all of the suspense and and and
because like a lot of scary movies now
or other scary movies I guess
even when you know what's coming it's still scary
like I don't know there's something about this where like
if you know it kind of
ruins it it just kind of becomes it
becomes a drama like it's just like
fun to watch there the
the acting i mean he's so good in it he's so he is so good and it's obviously it's hitchcock so
it's directed so well the music is really great so it just is like a great movie and yeah it
doesn't feel super scary but he's so good in it oh my god he's so good in it. Oh, my God. He's so good in it. How fun.
It is fun.
I will say this only time I've rewatched it to watch knowing and being like, look what you're doing.
Look at your acting.
You're doing so great.
So that was fun.
Well, I yeah, I've never seen it before.
And I know kind of like the beats of the movie, but I don't actually know.
I really don't know what the actual story is.
So I'm excited to hear about it let's
freaking talk about it let's do it to hear the rest of this episode and to get access to all
