This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, bonus episode for October number two.
Ooh yeah, baby. Ooh yeah.. Ooh, yeah, baby.
Ooh. Oh, yeah.
Spooky, spooky, spooky.
Every episode's spooky when you're
listening to Too Scary to Watch.
Welcome to Too Scary to Watch, where every
episode is spooky.
But they're a little extra spooky in October.
Speaking of spooky, it just
started to rain.
So you might be hearing that hit my air conditioner in the background a little bit.
Hell yeah.
I have gotten actually Emily inspired by you.
I've gotten very into putting on like cozy rain background music on my TV throughout the day.
Yes.
Yes. It's very good to do. It's very
good to do. And there are a lot of options on YouTube. There are so many. I really got into,
you guys know this around Christmas time, putting on, yeah, like holiday ambiance, ASMR,
like YouTube videos. And usually if I sit on my couch in the evening to read, I'll put one on.
Oh, that feels good.
But like a rainy cafe or like Gryffindor common room or just like sound.
For example, I might have done that.
Just might have done that.
They might like exclusively be Harry Potter.
Then I sit and I read with them and it's really nice.
It's a nice way to do it.
That does sound really nice. I've been
loving it recently. And those
YouTube videos are like 10 hours long
so you're never going to run out. Oh, they last forever?
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
You don't have to worry. Well,
should we just dive right into it, you guys?
Yeah. Yeah, what the heck are we diving
into, Hen? Okay, so
I watched Squid Game. The whole dang thing. And I'm here to tell you about it. I'm
so excited. This will be part one because it is a nine episode series where each episode is
either an hour or over an hour long. So it's a lot of content.
You know, I don't like that shows are doing that. I will say that's been a thing now. Midnight
Mass was the same way. Foundation
is the same way. It's too long.
Make the episodes shorter.
It's because, yeah, obviously
there aren't commercial breaks anymore in the age
of streaming. So it used to be that an hour-long
episode was really 40 minutes. And
now it's like, no, an hour-long episode is
an hour and 10 minutes.
It's a movie. Yeah, over an hour. Yeah, it's like, no, an hour long episode is an hour and 10 minutes. It's a movie.
Over an hour.
Yeah, it's basically a movie.
And that really is asking a lot.
It's asking a lot.
Because of that, I will have to skip some things and I will just do my best to try to keep everything.
And it's going to be hard, you know, I don't know.
It's going to be an experiment.
There is so much to say about this show. Obviously, it's an extreme success. It's Netflix's most watched show. They have said that 111 million people have watched it, which is just an obviously gargantuan number. And Netflix doesn't often release that kind of information, so very interesting.
A little peek behind the curtain.
A little peek behind the curtain there.
Also, I've been a little curious
of what that means,
to be honest, because Ted Sarandos says
it has 111 million fans.
And part of me wonders if that means
people just watched the first episode.
Right.
Did they watch the whole thing?
Like, what does that actually mean?
So not a release the data, not a full behind, just a tiny behind the curtain.
We can't write a full peak, not a full peak.
Exactly.
A peak of a peak, if you will.
Yes.
And just a few things about it.
So it's a South Korean series and it is written and directed by Won Dong-hyuk.
He actually started writing it and came up with the idea of it in 2009.
But he was unable to find anyone who could fund the idea until 2019 when Netflix came around.
They were like, we got big pockets full of cash.
Let's make it.
Damn.
Imagine that.
Imagine working on something for 10 years and being like, this shit's never going to see the light of day.
And then it becomes the most popular show ever made by Netflix.
That's so crazy.
Also, that's also why these shows are so good, though.
Do you know what i mean
like when someone has been working on it for 10 years like you can tell like the writing is so
tight everything is so well done it's directed beautifully um the song choices throughout it are
impeccable like it is really uh just a masterpiece to watch and as well as having like an insane story
yeah it's like really brutal right it's very brutal it's extremely fucked up i will be watching
it but the thing is it's like it's um tell me more um it's not like a horror movie though in the sense that it doesn't fill you with um dread
dread in the same way and it's not as much um i mean it does it's very very sad and you do feel
dread but it's not like it's not made like a horror movie um in those ways it's made more
like a thriller i would say um but some extremely fucked up things happen and it is extremely sad.
And let's see here. What else?
So on Rotten Tomatoes, it has 92 percent or 92 percent of 50 critics have given the series a positive review.
So that's a very high number.
review so that's a very high number um and that's kind of all i really wanted to say about it up top i guess is there anything else we don't really know any like the budget numbers netflix doesn't
reveal that stuff huh so we don't know because i always find that so um crazy disney does so
those disney shows like loki and wandavision are like some of the most expensive shows ever made and Mandalorian.
And
So in Wikipedia, they do reference it and they say
in a Bloomberg News article, Netflix spent about $21 million
to produce the series. Damn. Which
is not that high. No, that's actually dollars to produce the series. Damn. Which is
not that high.
No, that's actually not that high because
it's nine episodes, so that's something like
two million per episode.
That's actually extremely low.
The Mandalorian is 15 million
per episode.
Per episode?
Per episode.
Game of Thrones towards the end was also...
Also, those are 30 minute episodes
right so that number is yeah 20 million dollars is not not high at all um part of the reason why
those numbers get so inflated though is when you're filming a u.s production and it's like
all the above the line talent is all the like cast the directors or writers are all u.s or you know people or like it's the
production company's based in the u.s you get paid so much fucking money like they get paid
so much money compared to what they probably got paid in south korea yeah i'm sure it was
getting paid a fuck ton of money to like be on a tv show every exactly. Exactly. Exactly. So that
makes a big difference. And then also,
even though the show is extremely well-directed
and the sets are really
cool, it's not like there are a lot
of different sets.
It's pretty contained.
All things considered. So there's that
too. Sorry, just have
to cut in with this.
This is fucking crazy,
but I knew that this was the most expensive show ever made,
but it's the upcoming Lord of the Rings show on Amazon.
Oh yeah.
Uh huh.
The C for one season,
465 million.
Jesus Christ.
That's human beings are fucking deranged.
Crazy.
It's so,
we are deranged. Crazy. It's so.
We are deranged.
So crazy.
Like, and I will watch that show.
I love to watch TV shows.
I love to watch movies.
I love that they happen.
I love when they look good and are cool.
But we are a cursed species that we like.
Hey, we need to be entertained while the world burns.
It's so crazy.
It's like,
everything is wrong.
Everything is wrong.
I need to distract. We are like from the horrors of reality.
Horrifying,
horrifying.
Human beings are so bad.
And that amount of money is that's.
Well,
it's also no coincidence that the corporations that are like the wealthiest
best corporations making the most money are the ones that are now in the entertainment game like
amazon just has endless money to spend on this shit you know and they're like they're like lord
of the rings like oh we spent 465 million if it uh tanks meh uh yeah we got another 465 million
right in our back pocket here like
no big deal we're fucking going to space and shit
this is
that's so true I haven't
even like it's been so long since I've even taken
a step back to consider that
Amazon which is
like where I buy my
groceries if I go to Whole Foods
and where I
will order this stripper
pole that I'm going to order
is also making the Lord of the Rings TV
show. It's just like, okay,
so what?
Amazon owns IMDB
and Goodreads
and Washington Post.
Well, Jeff Bezos owns
Washington Post. That's right.
So bad.
It's really bad.
And we don't have laws against monopolies anymore, basically.
And now it's like the cat's out of the bag.
Anyway, this is not what this podcast is about, you guys.
This podcast is about Squid Game.
No, but I have a feeling it's a little bit about what Squid Game's about.
It does not feel unrelated.
No, no, it is related.
