This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for
those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily, and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Henley and I'm also too scared. I am Sammy and I like watching
scary movies. Oh God. She really does. It's really crazy. She really does. Can you believe
it? I can't believe it. What a world. There are different interests for different people.
Who knew? Who knew? Did anything scary happen to us this week?
I have one.
I discovered Survivor
and it's downhill from here, you guys.
Uh-oh.
I watched all of season seven, Pearl Island.
In one week?
Why season seven?
Why'd you start there?
In like two days.
Oh my God.
I Googled best seasons of of survivor and that popped up as
one of the number ones um what inspired you fucking great show like really really highly
how many episodes are in a season 15 okay that's not as crazy that's just two eight hour work days
basically with a lunch break. That's totally normal.
It's thrilling.
Honestly, there's nothing not to like.
I mean, it's it's unbelievable.
And I can't believe I have twenty nine more seasons to watch.
I'm so excited.
Wow.
Amazing.
So that was less scary and more just really great.
Congrats.
Sammy?
You mean scary?
My scary thing happened with Jenna.
We saw Cole Sprouse.
Oh, my God.
And you called me and I almost dropped everything I was doing and went out to the street to
see him, which is not a normal reaction.
The scary part about it was that in the moment I felt so cool
and calm and relaxed.
And then the second we
got to the place we were going,
my whole body was shaking and I was sweating.
I was like,
I thought I was going to pass out.
So much adrenaline. I'm not even the hugest
Cole Sprouse fan. I'm a Riverdale fan.
We're Riverdale fans here.
I love Cole Sprouse, but Emily's the big Cole Sprouse fan. I'm the biggestdale fan. And I do love Cole Sprouse, but Emily's the big
Cole Sprouse fan. I'm the biggest. I would marry him.
So I was shocked that I had an actual
physical, uncontrollable reaction
to it. It was very
unexpected. Well, you said he was so beautiful.
He was beautiful.
I love to hear it. I hate to hear it.
That's why they call it a heartthrob.
That is why they call it
a heartthrob. That's exactly right is why they call it a heartthrob.
That's exactly right.
I mean, wow.
I think it's just scary seeing celebrities because it's scary.
You it seems fun.
And then you see them and you're like, oh, they're just strangers.
And I don't know them.
It's so weird.
It's so weird to see such a familiar, complete stranger.
Yeah, it's weird.
It's like not fun.
So disappointing.
It's tough. And what about you emily um i mean nothing so so life-changing as as that i i had survivor a survivor um as
survivor i i just had sort of like a stressful week it was i was just like stressed all week
you know how sometimes you just are? And that's
maybe the scariest thing of all is that sometimes you
just feel trapped in your own anxiety
and you don't know when it will end.
But I did go...
She was terrifying. Because of that
I went to a dispensary
in person for the first time.
Because I never have.
I also never have. I'm like a
little baby who has been scared of drugs her whole life.
But it's very legal, guys, to smoke weed in California.
It is.
And I went to this lovely dispensary, this women-run dispensary.
And they were lovely.
And they talked me through.
I told them sort of what I was looking for.
It was very wonderful.
I've been to that dispensary on Sunset.
Yes.
It's my favorite dispensary. Guys yes it's my favorite dispensary guys it's a good dispensary they have all those little games that you can play it was
the first time i started to spin the wheel it feels good and it feels good it feels really
some dispensaries don't don't feel good okay good to know i'll only go to that one forever yeah um
it was really lovely and she gave me such good like things that she thought I would like and it's it was nice so
you know that sounds really nice
it was nice oh and another
scary thing happened to me this week oh are we there
because I was gonna say I watched the movie yes
is it time yeah it's time I'm watching the movie
I know I'm so proud of you and I was really
scared I'm thank you for being proud of me because I was
legitimately like really scared I really didn't
want to do it I really I remember I tried so
hard to find a way to not have to do it I was like i mean henley if you want to you can like it's
totally fine if you want to do it you can do it um but i watched it what freaking movie was it
the freaking movie is cape fear uh the remake apparently there was an original in the 60s this
is the remake came out in 1991 based on the novel by john mcdonald uh written by and this is sort of
confusing james r webb wrote a screenplay and then wesley strick rewrote the screenplay so
both of them wrote the screenplay um directed by martin scorsese scorsese i don't know what
do we say i've heard of him i've heard of and i've heard both of those. Starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis
and Joe Don Baker
and
here to talk about it. Wow, I didn't
prepare an intro but I'm going to just go off the cuff because
I know her.
Here to talk about it with us
is a wonderful,
hilarious, beautiful
if you need to know, writer
wickedly talented
wickedly talented
Adele Dazeem
our wonderful friend
writer of soon to be a Netflix
teenage bounty hunters
teenage bounty hunters is what it's called
that's right you're gonna learn to
love her airing in July on Netflix
learn to love me it'lliring in July. You're going to learn to love me.
It'll take a little time.
It'll take a little time and some elbow grease, but you'll learn to love me.
It's Kathleen Jordan.
Whoa.
Sorry, I screamed into the microphone because I was so excited.
Kathleen, hi.
We're so happy that you're here.
I'm so happy to be here.
We're so happy. You're truly like our dream guest, and I wish that we could have you on every week. Oh, that's're here. I'm so happy to be here. We're so happy. You're truly like our dream guest and I wish
that we could have you on every week.
Oh, that's so nice. This is my
dream podcast to be on.
Kathleen is honestly
we could say that you created this podcast
because you are the reason that we're friends.
I often say that. So this is your
podcast. It's your podcast.
That's true. You brought us together.
This group of women met at my bachelorette party.
So you're welcome.
Thank you.
That was the real marriage that took place.
Not your actual marriage.
Not my marriage to Steven.
No.
Previous podcast guest.
Previous podcast guest who, you know what?
We'd also love for him to come back.
We'd love for him to come back.
We love him too.
Fat chance.
He's never coming back. I know. He's he's so high maintenance yeah he's extremely famous just kidding he'd love to come back wait so okay tell the listeners how you feel about scary movies
i love scary movies um i do not like torture at all. I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate it so much.
But I love scary movies that are scary because it could actually happen to you.
And I love that.
I love that.
And that's what makes me most scared.
Yes.
And so like, oh, this is one of my favorite movies, not just scary movies, but one of
my favorite movies of all time.
I love it, though.
It's funny as in preparing this i are preparing for this i went online and looked and
not people don't like love this movie but i love this movie i think it's so fun and thrilling and
when was the first time you saw it um i saw it with my dad when i was like probably 12 or 13
oh that is an interesting because the father that is an interesting, because the father-daughter
is an interesting part of this movie.
Yes.
And an interesting time in your life
as a teenage girl to see this movie.
I saw a lot of like,
probably kind of not appropriate movies
with my dad and family,
but I like remember my dad
specifically loving this movie.
And so I would like to just point out also
that this is falling into a theme we have with guests on the podcast who um continually have a favorite horror movie that
they saw at a younger age and i think it's because it kind of like imprints on you and that at that
age and it kind of means more to you than later in life i also think that like because this is
probably stupid but because it's directed by martin scorsese i'm like i like think it's elevated right right right right and i like that like say in my mind is like oh it's
it is good it has to be good you're like it's prestige early 90s horror so going into it i was
like oh my god scorsese robert de niro this is going to be and like people were he was de niro
was nominated for an academy award juliette Lewis was nominated for. And like this.
Yes.
And they are very good in it.
So they're so good.
But I, too, going in was like, this is going to be so impeccable.
And and if I didn't know it was directed by him, some of the directing choices, I was
like, what the fuck?
They're crazy because they're all they're all like Hitchcock references, which is why. And it's very
campy. It's got a camp element
to it, which is like silly. But which is
sort of makes it more fun. Yeah.
Hi, everybody.
It is cocktail hour.
And this week's cocktail is a
Boathouse Punch. This recipe
is for,
I don't know, a large
serving. So better for a party or something like that. It's really
delicious. To make it, you'll need nine ounces of gin, two tablespoons of sugar, one lemon,
six ounces of Aperol, nine ounces of Saint Germain, nine ounces of fresh lemon juice,
nine ounces of orange juice, nine ounces of grapefruit juice, and a quarter bottle of rose
champagne. In a large pitcher, you'll muddle the lemon peel with the sugar. Let stand for at least
30 minutes and then add the remaining ingredients and fill with ice and stir. And you'll garnish
each drink with an orange wheel. Cheers. I have some trivia. I want to hear it. This is one of
the crazier trivias I feel like I've ever read.
Oh, my God.
I wonder if this is true.
Don't check.
I'll never check.
Robert De Niro paid a dentist $5,000 to make his teeth look suitably bad for the role.
Holy shit.
And after filming, paid $20,000 to have them fixed.
Well, he had money to burn.
I'm not adding that that is true.
I've read that in multiple places.
That they filed his teeth down.
Ow.
He is so fucking scary in this movie.
He really is.
Whatever the scary equivalent of a sight gag is, he is a scary gag.
Just seeing him is bone chilling.
So I believe that.
And it's true.
is bone chilling so i i believe that and it's true a personal trivia is that my mother had the poster for this movie hanging in her bedroom for my entire childhood
it's like it's honestly she doesn't even really care about the movie that much it must just be
something that someone gave her that she's like i guess i'll hang it and so when i would like go into my mom's room after like having a nightmare it would be like
robert de niro's crazy eyes big huge eyes like
oh so that's my like personal experience that's fucking nuts i never would have guessed that in
a million years i wouldn't expect you to.
Do you think she's lying that she like there's not a reason that it's there?
Like, do you think she has like a thing for Robert De Niro?
Maybe I honestly kind of hope so.
That's a good choice.
Make more sense.
Be better.
I think a picture of him in the movie would be better.
Maybe that's too obvious.
That's too on the nose.
And then another trivia I had was that both reese witherspoon and drew barrymore auditioned for the part of the daughter who plays who plays that character juliet lewis and she's really good in
it and i think like they were both reese and i mean juliet lewis is beautiful but I think Reese and Drew both would have been
too lovely looking
at that age she needs
to be she needs to look like an awkward teenager
I think for it to work the way that it does
that's like so central
to her performance yeah that she like
looks like
she like has the body of a woman but
looks like an awkward teenager and it's like that
exact moment in time feels very important for this movie.
And I don't like where that leads.
And you shouldn't.
You shouldn't.
It's very spooky.
I have a piece of trivia about it that's kind of interesting.
That it was originally going to be directed by Steven Spielberg.
And Martin Scorsese was attached to Schindler's List.
And they switched.
What?
Yeah.
Isn't that crazy?
Whoa.
They both would have been so different.
It would have been very weird.
And who's he?
What's the other one?
Wow.
I get Martin Spielberg.
Steven Spielberg.
Steven Spielberg.
What's it?
Steven Spielberg wanted Bill Murray to play Max Cady,
the role that Robert De N niro played that would have been
it would have been a different it would have been a different movie um i will say there was a moment
in this movie and it you know robert de niro is such a good actor obviously obviously um and there
is something about being such a good actor that you can make a choice where out of context is the
stupidest thing a person has ever done.
There is a moment at the end of this movie where if it were not him, it would be you'd
be like, this person's awful.
This is the worst acting I've ever seen.
This is insane.
I hate this.
But because it's him, you're like, man, he really goes there.
And that is I like truly had this revelation about acting, watching this movie of like,
man, who's to say?
Really, who's to say?
Oh my God.
I'm so excited to talk about this movie.
I'm glad I saw it.
I'm glad I saw it.
Let's watch the goddamn trailer.
Let's watch the trailer.
Sam, somebody's out there. What's watch the trailer. dad you should have just punched him out yeah you know how to fight dirty you do that for a living
this guy uh he threatened you he's clever so that the law can't touch him come out come out
wherever you are um oh my god i'm fucking so excited to talk about this i'm excited to hear
about it um kathleen do you want to get us started? Set the scene. Set the scene.
Set the scene.
We've got Juliette Lewis, a young Juliette Lewis.
She's like 18, but she's...
She's playing 15, almost 16.
It's like almost her 16th birthday.
Okay.
Yeah.
Dani.
Okay.
She's talking straight to camera, reminiscing and romanticizing about a vacation place that
they go to called Cape Fear and how magical
and wonderful it is.
And yeah, it's got a pretty spooky name.
It's weird that it's called Cape Fear because the only thing you'll hear is that like the
days are ending because it's so lovely.
So wonderful.
Okay.
And then cut straight to a jail cell wall covered in war generals like robert e lee photos a bunch of books and then you cut to or rather
pan to the back of a prisoner with these huge high contrast uh tattoos on his back um there's
the scales of justice um on each like lat. Yeah. Huge.
This dude's ripped. He's clearly
using his time well in his jail cell.
Yeah. And turn around
and it's Robert De Niro who's playing the character
of Max Cady.
Our scary, scary villain.
A jail clerk. What do we
call him? A jail guy? A jail guy.
A jail guy. A jail guard.
A guard. Let's call him a guard. We can call him? A jail guy? A jail guy? A jail guy. A jail bird? A jail guy comes. A guard? A guard.
Let's call him a guard. Comes and lets him out.
We can call him a clerk if you want. Sure.
A clerk. A clerk. A jail
receptionist. A jail intern comes.
A secretary. Gets him
out of his cell and as he's walking
out to the front,
all the other inmates are looking like,
this is a guy who has some presence at the jail.
Okay. And then when the jail bird gets him, he says like, it's your lucky day, Katie, or something.
So like he's he's being released.
He's being released.
And on his way out, one of the jail jailbirds, the jail clerk calls after him and says, oh, Katie, what about your books?
And he says, I read them all.
Oh my God. So he's powerful
and smart. And he's wearing some peach
loose bell bottoms.
Yeah, just to save us some time, we should quickly
just note his fashion throughout
is extremely... 10 out of 10.
It's so good.
It's like what my mind thinks of when people
say like Miami Vice. We're all probably
a little too young for the reference, but that's like what I kind
of what I picture.
But like it is like Miami.
Georgia prisoner version of Miami.
That's right.
That's right.
That's exactly what it is.
There's a lot of like all white outfits and like like giant aviator sunglasses.
At one point he's wearing a little Speedo like Leopard Prince Speedo.
He's really going big on the fashion.
He's going big.

I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up because I just loved getting all the things that I needed
that I would use every day in class. I still to this day have nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number
two pencils. Really scary stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need
notebooks or number two pencils anymore. But this fall there is something that I will be using every day and would be terrified to be caught without,
and that's Raycon's best-selling everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks every day,
and so I need earbuds that I can rely on to listen to all my favorite podcasts, and I know
you guys listen to podcasts as well, so you know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon black
because that's my vibe, but they come in other cool colors as well, like forest green and brush
violet. But my favorite thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours and they have a new quick charge function. So 10 minutes of charging
gets you 90 minutes of battery life. Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a
long morning walk. You forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode of a podcast. It's only going to take
you 10 minutes. It's incredible. So go to buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get 20 to 40%
off site wide. That's right. You'll get up to 40% off everything on Raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary buyraycon.com
slash too scary um then we get to that kind of like swelly music the lovely intro of a perfect
American southern family um a maid is getting let out at this
beautiful Southern house. Graciela
is her name. Graciela, just a lovely
woman who works at
the house. No reason to remember her
because she won't come back later. Nope.
Forget her. Forget her. She'll never be
back. Uh-oh. And
Juliette Lewis's character
Danny, she's like,
she's doing that awkward thing of like really showing off the Spanish that she's learned.
Hola Graciela.
Hola Graciela.
Hazrop Olympia.
And Graciela responds in English, which is just like, yeah, she speaks better English than you do Spanish.
Shut the fuck up.
and then yeah we go inside and we meet Lee the mom this beautiful
woman who has
that cursed haircut
of the early 90s that
feathered short
like a feathered pixie
it's so ugly and she's so beautiful
she is so beautiful throughout this movie
for viewers
so like objectively hot
in every way to this
goddamn day.
Oh my God.
She's so hot.
She's so hot.
Yes.
We meet mom and she's doing her sketches.
We learned that she was,
she's like a marketing person.
She's trying to come up with a logo for a travel agency or something,
something like that.
Like a brand concept.
There's a playful moment between mom and daughter where we learned the
daughter,
she's in the real rebellious
annoyed with mom and dad eye rolly phase of teenagerdom which is really fun to watch and
we meet their cute fluffy dog again don't worry about it not gonna come back later stop thinking
about it it's done anytime there's a dog you know everything's fine and then after we meet the dog
we cut to dad at work uh sam boden played by by Nick Nolte. He did well at a case.
He's got a co-worker.
Everyone's happy.
Look at this wealthy American family.
Everyone's white.
Everyone's rich.
So the family goes out to see Problem Child in theaters.
Max lights up his cigar and he's laughing.
He's being very inappropriate at the movie.
Right there.
It showed in the trailer.
He's like sitting around in front of them. Yes. Yes, exactly. Got it. laughing he's being very inappropriate at the movie right there it showed in the trailer he's
like sitting around in front of them type of thing yes exactly got it um so this guy's so annoying
and juliet lewis afterwards they're all getting ice cream and she's rolling her eyes at that
annoying freak at the movies and uh they're joking about how um sam the dad should have punched him
out because he that he fights for a living or something some cute line
about him fighting for a living
you fight dirty for a living
he's a lawyer
and also we're sort of
I don't know if we've fully gotten the impression yet but
their marriage isn't like
so happy they sort of take jabs
at each other in this way there's like a lot of tension
below the surface
it all like seems fine but you can definitely tell that like this way there's like a lot of tension below the surface yeah it's right i know what that's fine
but you can definitely tell that like when she says that like oh you know you could you should
approach me you fight it's like she's not she's not they don't like each other yeah so much but
they're gonna pretend that they do yes they're happy family passion there's like passion and
hate like right under the surface. It's hot.
And then you see it boil up.
Yeah.
When dad goes to pay for the ice cream, it's been taken care of.
It's been paid for.
Why has it been taken care of? Uh-oh.
He looks out the window.
Crazy stylized zoom in on a guy sitting in a topless.
A topless.
What's that called?
A topless.
A topless.
Convertible. A convertible?
A convertible?
A topless car.
A fucking slutty car.
Max Keating is sitting there
staring at him from like 30
feet away. And it seems like he doesn't really
know who that is. It's nighttime.
It's too far for him to really see him.
Walks a little bit closer.
Looks at who that guy is and gets his family and he's like, let's too far for me to really see him. Walks a little bit closer. Looks at who that guy is.
And gets his family. He's like, let's
eat our ice cream inside. This is like sort of
weird. Okay. And he was still
at that point. I'm like, I think he does know who he
is. I mean, I don't know. They go inside
and he like turns back around to
go. There's like an air of recognition.
Maybe. Okay. Maybe. You're not
quite sure. But the way that
he's like, hey hey let's go inside is
rather than oh who's this man who bought my ice cream
thank you for not getting me ice cream so he brings
him inside and he turns around to look again and the car is
gone I don't like that no and you shouldn't
you shouldn't you shouldn't and you'll grow
to like it less and less yeah you're at
sort of your peak of liking it in this moment
it's like how when you learn to love me
like you said at the beginning of the podcast
you'll learn to hate this guy.
You will quickly learn.
Yeah.
Cut to Nick Nolte playing an extremely flirty game of squash with Ileana Douglas.
So flirty.
And you're like, wait a minute.
Did I just see him with his wife?
I truly was like, oh, am I?
Is this a different person?
It feels like weird.
Yeah, that's a good way to think about it.
It just happens very fast that you're like, oh, okay.
Oh, great.
Okay, we're in a different movie.
Is it a co-worker?
Turns out it's a co-worker.
Okay.
She is a clerk.
Not to be confused with a jail clerk.
A jail clerk or what?
Not to be confused with a jail clerk.
Sorry, sorry.
There are many clerks in this movie.
It's hard to keep them.
Everyone's a clerk.
They almost called it clerks, but then they realized that it was going to be taken later. Going to be taken
in the future. Yeah, exactly.
That will be taken. Right, exactly.
They're playing this
sexy game of squash
and like in front of other
co-workers too, which is kind of weird.
It's like very public. And then they
kind of break up their sexiness.
I think co-workers seeing them makes them
kind of tone it down like maybe 20%.
And then they leave the squash court and they go upstairs
and leave
the gym or whatever.
And Nick Nolte
slash Sam says,
like, you know, we shouldn't really do this anymore.
And Ileana Douglas' character
Lori is like, well, we're not doing anything.
We haven't even slept together.
So it's just a flirtation at work, but it's obviously, he's like, come on is like, well, we're not doing anything. We haven't even slept together. It's just a flirtation at work, but
it's obviously, he's like, come on.
There's more to it than just like
something's going to happen.
There's a lot of something there.
She was like, why?
Is your wife going to care that we're hanging out?
He's like, my wife doesn't even know you exist.
That's going to come back.
Well, that's a fucked up thing that does not
answer the question.
No, and she doesn't love that. I't blame her i wouldn't i wouldn't like to know that either
right they they leave and they sort of then at his at her car she's like getting ready to drive
off and he's sort of like okay fine like let's hang out again and they like make plans to get
because he can't help himself um he loves to he loves to fuck he loves to fuck so yeah so we it's not it's not
over it's not over but then he takes um his keys to put them into the ignition it's in his car to
drive away it's in his car to drive away and the keys are taken and there's max katie standing over
his car oh um with the craziest accent i have ever heard. It is an extremely strong Southern accent.
I wouldn't say being from the South and feeling pretty good about my knowledge of accents.
I wouldn't say it's a good accent.
So he takes his keys out of his ignition and is holding them, which is threatening.
It's very scary.
In its very nature.
And he says, I'll try to do his accent.
Free as a bird.
You can go wherever you want with whomever.
That's pretty good.
I liked that.
But immediately his comment to Sam is that.
Like, I know your shit.
Yeah, I know that you're like, oh, you can do whatever you want.
Look at you.
You're just walking around.
And the implication, too, is is like i know you're married i
know you're flirting with this bitch like right i know i know shit i know shit about you yeah so
they get to talking and it turns out um sam was his lawyer 14 years ago he plays like he doesn't
remember who he is but at this point it's pretty clear that he does yeah he's he's acting he's like
oh i oh my gosh yeah oh you good for you you got released from
prison and he's like no no no counselor counselor counselor he says counselor a lot during it um
and he was his like public defender oh i see so he was assigned to the court appointed lawyer
obviously since he went to prison for 14 years, maybe he's dissatisfied with his representation at the time of the trial.
It would seem I would think that would be a fair assumption.
Smart. OK. Yeah.
Honestly, I think it would be kind of scary to be a public defender.
Oh, my God. Yeah. Yeah. Because you always wonder the cases you lost.
Because you always wonder the cases you lost.
Are those people going to come for me?
You're going to get some more info.
About this particular situation. So Max kind of tries to intimidate Sam.
And Sam doesn't want to be intimidated.
But as he's driving away, Max says to him,
you're going to learn a thing or two about loss. Which is a thing I had to put subtitles on because he said, you're going to learn a thing or two about loss.
Which is a thing I had to put subtitles on because he said, you're going to learn about loss.
You're going to learn a thing or two about loss.
Excuse me, sir.
A what?
What are you saying?
Not what you want to hear.
Not what you want to hear, my friends.
No.
So then back at home, Lee and Sam are kind of just chatting about the day and Danny's
home from school. And Danny mentions that, you know, she really misses the times that they spent
as a family on the houseboat at Cape Fear. Got it. So the aforementioned marital tension is
on full display in the scene. Okay. Sam says, you know, hey, why don't we take a week off
and go up to
the houseboat um and you know give danny that time at the houseboat of cape fear and lee says
she thought he didn't have time and now she doesn't have time and and it's clear to us that
he's saying this to get away from max yeah he's like oh let's get into town for like he's sort of
freaked by seeing and he's sort of like let's go to town's gonna houseboat and she's like no we have shit going on
then they just have sex
he like sees her in the mirror getting ready for bed
like sort of like taking her
shoulder strap off her shoulder
and he's like do that again and then they fuck
yeah they fuck and then it goes black and white when they're fucking
and then it goes inverted black and white
so stylized
it's wild
then they stop having sex
and then it fades to like a
bright yellow, which is very weird.
Then all of a sudden she's sitting in front of the
mirror and she's got like a bunch of mirrors in her
vanity. So this is the start of what I
thought was one of the scariest parts of the movie
because I was so unsettled. I was just like
what the fuck is
happening? She's looking in the mirror and
you don't really get what's going on in her head
but you kind of, it's like a
if I had to put words to
her, it would be like, am I still pretty
or something? Like, there's like, she's
like putting on this crazy pink colored
lipstick that you would definitely only wear in the late 80s
or early 90s. Yeah, and it's like in the middle
of the night. And she's like pretty
well lit. Is it supposed to be like an insecurity
thing because maybe she feels that he's having an emotional affair that's smart yes you're smarter
than i yeah that's probably what it is probably completely right and i'm not thinking about that
until you just said that now but yeah that's totally what that's totally what i think you
know when those things are happening yes and you're yeah and you're right um she does yes and
she and there may be a history there.
So this may be a pattern.
Or forget that we said that.
Or that may never come up again.
Don't forget. So forget about that.
Forget about the dog and forget about Graciela the maid.
Oh, I already forgot about Graciela.
Oh, OK, good. Then don't do anything.
Anyway, she's having this very like personal, sensual moment of putting on lipstick and like touching her lips.
And Sam is in bed.
And as she's kind of like having such a private almost like masturbatory moment by herself she notices out the window um in with the backdrop of all of these crazy the craziest fireworks as
if someone is doing a show just for them like no fireworks look this way um max katie is sitting
on their fence just looking inside their house oh no
just like very relaxed like fucking like stretched out like he's in a fucking chaise lounge truly my
biggest nightmare whenever i'm home alone that's all i picture is someone like just casually
watching yes it that i'm telling you that that was the moment 10 minutes in it's 10 minutes into
the movie yeah where i texted all of you was like i don't think i could do this. I was like, I don't think I can watch this movie. I'm too
scared. It's extremely scary.
It's so scary. And it gets so much
worse. She tells
Sam they wake up
and he wakes up and they go down and
he's gone. So
then I think it's the next day that he
tells her about Katie's case
and he's like, you know,
he said something. I'm going to teach you about loss or something. He he's like, you know, he said something.
I'm going to teach you about loss or something.
He's faking as though he doesn't remember.
That it's not like seared into his brain.
And faking that he doesn't, that who Katie is, isn't seared into his brain.
He's like, I mean, I don't know.
It was 14 years ago. I defended him, but I don't really know what it was.
Yeah.
So he's hiding something. Something that was being hidden was yeah so i can't remember he's hiding something
do you guys get that he's hiding something i get it okay um then the next morning they see
they're talking and sam says to lee you know danny can't just like walk around alone here um
like we we need to be safe he's kind of slept on it
and it's like this is serious we she you know we have like we have a teenage daughter um we can't
let her reason to be this think about that in connection with this man but just in case normal
teenage daughter stuff just a regular thought that i'm having unrelated unrelated to what's
yeah happening with this and he even says he's like he's. Like, he doesn't want to go back to jail.
He's not going to do anything.
Right.
He just got added.
I just want to go back to jail.
But like, you know, let's just be careful.
Don't let the dog out and don't let her daughter out.
It's fine.
Come on.
Just get used to it.
So clearly, once he gets to work that day and is talking to a colleague because he's
a lawyer, his tone has changed and he is very concerned. He's trying to get a case against him, but there's nothing. You know, he's talking to a colleague because he's a lawyer, his tone has changed and he is very concerned.
He's trying to get a case against him, but there's nothing.
You know, he's talking to a colleague.
He's like, what, a guy might plan to murder you or might plan to rape your family?
Like, yeah, something like that.
And he's also like, OK, so he was he bought your ice cream and he was looking at you.
Maybe he wasn't.
And oh, he's like, oh, he was trespassing on your property.
He was like,
no,
he was on the fence boarding my property.
He's like,
okay,
I don't know.
Guys,
to me,
that seems like a case.
Like if a guy that you were supposed to defend 14 years ago,
just got out of jail and then does two strong power moves.
That's a case.
And it's like lurking around you.
He does say he's like, get a restraining order. And he was like lurking around you. He does say he's like get a restraining
order and he was like I filed for one but it takes
like 10 days or something. So he's like
yeah I know but also like
this dude has like been stalking
me and I can't wait 10 days for a restraining
order. This is interesting because I feel like this is the
same thing that happens to women
all the time. And Henley?
We're gonna get there. I think
it's gonna happen to some women in
this it's gonna no but that's that's a smart to some women they're smart to say that you're right
and i do yeah this is like an everyday problem for so many women that they trying to get
restraining orders on men who are clearly dangerous and no one cares the justice system
broken yes and in this movie definitely touches on that. But so this is, I believe, the scene where
we do learn finally
about his history with Katie and what
they do. Because the lawyer's like, or his
co-worker's like, what's the fuck? What is the deal with this?
Like, why is this guy doing
this to you? Yeah, and it's
the crime is rape and aggravated
sexual battery. Of a 16
year old girl. Of a 16 year old girl.
Oh no. And that's when his his corker's like you your daughter's
about 16 right and he's like uh-huh that's right yeah that is why i'm freaking out and he at the
time he got um he cops to the secret um that he's been keeping which is that uh sam got a report that the victim of the crime was promiscuous before and he buried it
but you see like you see his moral character in this moment because he's like yes it's like she
was promiscuous but she um he kept saying you should have seen what he did to her which we
never actually a weird thing about this movie is we never learned the actual details but he's like
if you had seen what he did to her.
Yeah.
It's crazy that that could even be an argument against that.
That's so fucked up.
And the question here is like, and his lawyer friend keeps saying like, but it is your you took an oath.
It is your job to defend him to the best of your ability.
And you didn't do that.
I create the strongest case.
He's like, I mean, moral freaking.
Yeah.
And he's like, I know I didn't. But fuck strongest case and he's like i know i didn't but fuck it but fuck it this guy
is a piece of shit and like he deserved what he got and in this moment when they're talking about
the you know he buried he buried this this um detail um and but at that point max katie was
illiterate so there's no way that he could know now that the report was buried.
Because how would he even.
And they keep being like, yeah, he's buried.
Right.
So, yeah, no one would ever know.
And there's no way he could ever know.
I have a feeling that he does know.
You could be right about that.
Well, given the fact that the book, the books, like all the books.
Which he read.
Oh, the Stacks of Books.
And guess what?
Can I tell you another piece of trivia?
The tagline for this movie in some settings was he learned how to read.
Wait, that's really good. It's kind of awesome. I love it. Really scary. Cape Fear. He learned how to read.
That's so funny because no audience would have any context for that.
But in the context of this movie, it's like
extremely scary and
very descriptive.
That is the worst case scenario for you.
But it's like you have to see half of the
movie to get the tagline.
He learned how to read.
Okay.
So at this point, he thinks he's safe. He thinks
he doesn't know. He just thinks he's safe he thinks he had he doesn't know he just thinks he's
like a crazy man who's after him but like yeah not safe probably fine everything's probably fine
yeah uh then at home um lee is saying to danny that she really needs to be careful kind of
relaying that message and it's just a weird the the first um hint at danny's sexuality
she's like what you think i don think I haven't been flashed before,
Mom? What?
You think guys don't flash me?
And she's like, okay, yeah,
you're right. You've probably been flashed.
Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you. I'm sure you've been
flashed.
It's so funny.
It really is a very funny teenage
daughter and mom moment of like, oh, fine, yeah,
whatever, you've been flashed. You're a woman it's fine oh my gosh um then out on the street
um katie rolls up on sam in his topless car his topless car titty's out sexy and he is looking at a group of teenage girls. And this is not TV version of teenage girls.
No, this is actual teenage girls.
They're like awkward.
Yeah.
They're really being played by 15 year olds.
Not like 25 year old looking teenagers.
Not Riverdale.
These are not Riverdale people.
These are real children with braces.
Like that.
Like breast buds.
Julia Lewis's character
Danny, she wears a retainer the whole time.
It's like they're real teens.
They're like real teens.
Also, it should be noted
that he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt
with the pattern of
like a hot orange sunset.
It's very
intense. His vibe is crazy crazy the palette is ketchup and
mustard it's like a really really bright uh primary color but yeah he rolls up on on sam
who's walking down the sidewalk and as he's starting to talk to him a group of teenagers
walk out and he takes a moment he's like oh i love him at he says i love him at that age
sam's like why are you coming after me why aren't you badgering the judge like I love him. He says I love him at that age.
Sam's like, why are you coming after me? Why aren't you badgering the judge?
Like, I don't get this. I was your lawyer. I defended you.
And Katie laughs and laughs and laughs. Oh, he laughs. He does that Joker laugh. And then he says it tells him, you know what?
I actually learned to read and in jail first it was spot
goes to the farm first it was spot goes to the farm then runaway bunny then law books mostly
and he's like you know we're just a couple of lawyers here talking shop like let's talk about
it and sam's like look how much money do you want
like i'll give you money um and i'll give you ten thousand dollars and katie thinks that's hilarious
and he's like have you ever been a woman what and sam's like what and he's like have you ever been a
woman some fat hairy hillbillies wet dream and so implying that he's been raped a lot and then
he doesn't just imply it he talks about it he says oh god something did you write down the exact quote
because yeah um yeah sam's like okay sorry sorry i get it like he's like no no let's talk let's
talk about how much money you owe me let's like really work this out
he's like huh so
what's the compensation
for being held down and raped by four
white guys how about four black
guys well actually I think he says
sodomized oh sodomized yeah you're right
sodomized by four white men
how about four black men
oh no
Sam's a little out of his element Sam's a little out of his element.
He's a little out of his element, one would say.
Learn this in law school.
One would say.
$10,000 does seem low.
It seems low.
It does seem low.
And you know what?
Max Cady agrees.
Yeah, Max Cady really agrees because he amortizes it over years and is like, even if it's $100,000,
that's less than $10 a day.
That's less than minimum wage.
So he doesn't like the idea of being paid.
He's also like, I have money.
And like, honestly, he's driving a convertible.
He's got a dope ass shirt.
He's like doing fine.
Yeah.
He doesn't need money.
No, he doesn't need money.
That's not what he wants.
Wait, the implication is that he was raped every day when he was in jail for 14 years.
No. I'm glad you asked because the answer is that he was raped every day when he was in jail for 14 years. No.
Emily, I'm glad you asked because the answer is no.
No.
I think the implication is that at least twice he was gang raped by some groups of men.
No, the money per day is just based on like salary, like he's lost out on a job.
Oh, I was thinking we were getting paid per week.
But that is a good question.
I'm really glad to be clarified because I would have had
a completely different idea of what happened
in the jail. Also, very interesting for
a rapist to be questioning
about what he should be compensated
for having been raped.
Yeah, it is interesting.
It's funny that he went there.
Some might say that would be a comeuppance.
Some might say. And he should comeuppance. Some might say.
And he should not
be compensated for it.
Let's not compensate for a
comeuppance. I agree with that. I really do.
I agree with that very much. So anyway,
he says, because he
defended himself in many
appeals unsuccessfully.
He was like,
I, did you know I became my own lawyer when i set
myself up for appeals and i studied my own case and i became i like learned how to defend myself
and so you are starting to get the picture of like oh i read the files bitch i i read the files bitch
you know something like that better tagline than he learned to read
he read the files bitch um so then sam's at work and he gets a call his wife is on the line
it's urgent he says no no i've got more important things to do and the secretary sorry but that's
what she was called at the time says no no your wife is on the line it's urgent baby and so he
then cut to him driving home like a maniac and uh you get home lee is crying she describes a very
high-pitched squealing she called like screaming she said she said i wrote this down because it's
so crazy it's like he was a clock winding down like an old clock and all of a sudden he just
stopped yeah no one makes that metaphor the dog the dog unfortunately we lied we said that the
dog wasn't gonna come back but we lied i'm shocked wait the dog i feel cheated of natural causes i
don't trust you guys i don't know the vet said that he was poisoned he was poisoned um that i didn't see that coming
well and there's a crazy also moment of marital tension so oh yeah this is crazy she he's like
the dog died he was the vet said he was poisoned and he was like i told you not to let the dog out
and she stands there she's like i didn't let him out and it like, they're like grabbing each other and screaming. And she's like, I didn't let the dog out!
It's like really insane.
What?
It amps up to a thousand instantly.
Okay, but wait.
Is then the implication that he came into the house?
That is the implication.
Yeah.
Okay.
And we haven't quite gotten there yet.
But yes, so that is the implication.
But while they're fighting and screaming, Danny like gets up and runs and like goes to her
room because she's like, my parents hate each other.
I hate my life.
I'm a teenager.
I'm going to tell you how scary this movie is
is that when you said it's the implication that he's
been inside the house, my heart stopped
because that's how scary it is for the
idea of Max Cady being in your house.
That's truly the scariest thing that happens
in this real world.
That's very scary.
Is an intrusion an
unexpected violation and someone being there without your permission
and without your knowledge?
That's terrifying.
Absolutely right.
And Sammy, buckle the fuck up.
Because more is coming.
More is to come.
So they pull up to, or Sam goes to the jailhouse and he's talking about the police, police
lieutenant played by Robert Mitchum
who played Max
Katie in the original.
Just a little fun fact.
A little fun fact.
And they're looking at Max through a
one-way mirror and they've brought him
in for this crime.
Nick IDs him.
And Nick is like very on
edge and like doesn't want to id him and then
the lieutenant is like it's a one-way mirror he can't see you but like you get the feeling he
like he because who else would bring him in right like and it it is so unnerving that you're like
who else's dog did he kill you know yeah and he keeps looking through like he's looking at the
mirror but but and you know he knows he's looking at the mirror, but, but, and you know, he knows he's looking at the mirror, but you also know he knows he's looking at him.
And like, it is a very scary.
Yeah.
It's fucking terrifying.
You're like, there's no escaping this guy.
No.
And as you're looking at him, he's stripped down.
And we get all these like crazy zoom-ins on all of his tattoos and you get to read them
all.
And that's sort of the moment that we learn that he is so Christian biblical, like that
there that that is an element to his character.
One of the books he has read is the Bible.
It is the Bible.
And I think he's read it more than once, probably more than once in the 14 years.
And the scales of justice on his back are also a cross.
There's like a cross along his spine
I think what's really scary for me is when
someone else has no
fear because they feel
like what they're doing is right and nothing
can stop them that's a big old theme for Max
yeah that's exactly
that's a big theme he's got nothing
to lose and feels 100%
justified in his actions
and it's all about the justice of God, too, because he says vengeance, the tattoos.
The Lord is the avenger.
Time is the avenger.
Truth versus justice.
Vengeance is mine.
And like all of this stuff about like, I think God being the ultimate judge, judge, which is so crazy.
Right.
So this man, right.
This man raped and beat the shit out of a 16 year old girl so crazy. So this man raped and
beat the shit out of a 16-year-old girl.
Right. Went to jail for it
and spent his entire time in jail
reading and learning about how
it is that he shouldn't
be in jail and
is correct in the eyes of
God. Well, that's what's so interesting about the
Bible is you can make it mean whatever you want it to
mean. That's true.
Tune into Teenage Bounty Hunters July 2020 on Netflix.
July 2020.
He was wronged by his lawyer.
Yeah.
Ignoring the fact that prior to that, he did some bad stuff.
He raped and beat up a 16-year-old girl.
Very crazy.
Spooktacular.
It's absolutely spooktacular. It really is. It crazy spooktacular it's absolutely spooktacular it really is it's
spooktacular this is one of the most spooktacular movies i've ever seen um okay so so dad's at home
and boy is his tune changed and he's like oh you know the sheriff sheriff's positive he's gonna
slip up on something we'll get him don't Don't worry about it. Everything's fine. Do do do. Everything's. Let's go back to the dog.
But whatever.
Sorry about the dog.
It's going to be fine.
And then they have a Fourth of July parade.
They're just having a fun family time.
Great Fourth of July parade, by the way.
They had like all these like real people setting up famous like patriotic works of art.
It was very cool.
It was cool.
I wish I had been there. I wish I had been there.
I wish I had been there.
I would.
I wish I could have been there until I saw Max Katie across the way.
Staring.
Staring straight.
Right at the Bowdoin family.
God, the staring.
I hate it.
Well, this is a big stare, stare of heavy movie.
And then Sam immediately breaks through the crowd to the other side and walks up to Katie.
And the mom and daughter don't see where he goes.
They don't see who he's after.
He's sort of just like gone.
And they're like, where'd he go?
What's happening?
And by the way, they have not they have not seen Katie.
They don't know what he looks like.
They know that there's some guy.
Max says to Sam, hot as a firecracker on the
4th of July
and you know Sam is
assumes that Max
is talking about his wife Lee
we're not clear on if he's
talking about Lee or if he's talking about his
16 year old daughter Danny
and so he kind of like goes to Nick
hits him Nick Nick Nolte hits him
Nick Nolte the actor yeah Nick Nolte, the actor.
Yeah.
He gets out of character and says, this one's for my homies.
I'm going to punch you as me, the man.
It really takes you out in the moment.
It's really weird.
It's definitely my least favorite part of the movie.
This is personal and don't cut this out, Martin.
personal and don't cut this out martin um and he beats him and then max immediately and it very adeptly takes on the victim oh my god what i'm sorry sir in a parade crowd there's people around
he's like why'd you come out oh my god and like random passers-by are like holding back sam and
they're like don't hit him what's going on right very easy for him to play the victim right
yeah he just came at him out of nowhere
yeah right I'm just enjoying the parade
so then immediately
something about the scene this movie that is
scary is that it lulls you into a sense
of like you think you understand the rhythm
or like what's happening but then you'll just
cut to another scene with Max Katie
we just cut right into a scene with Max Katie
flirting it up at the bar with Ileana Douglas.
They're both drunk.
Sexy squash.
The sexy squash girl.
Sexy squash partner.
And they're having a great time.
She's really lamenting.
God, I had no business getting stuck up on a guy who was married.
And Katie's kind of teasing her.
Really charming her.
You can tell they've been here for a while.
She's drunk already.
They're flirting.
kind of teasing her. Really charming her.
You can tell they've been here for a while. She's drunk already.
They're flirting.
She asks where he's from and he says Georgia State
Correctional Facility. That makes her laugh
harder than she's ever laughed before.
Her drunk vibe is just like a red flag
to me.
Everything is so
funny.
So funny. Oh my god, everything
is so funny.
She's like, it's funny, I've heard a joke about i heard a joke like let me tell you and oh this scene is really unnerving
and the scene is improvised i fucking that's interesting this scene is completely improvised
okay you guys will need to watch you need to watch this movie and if you watch this movie
understanding this scene is improvised
You will be legitimately scared
Of the man Robert De Niro
He's really a genius because it's really
Fucked up
It's really fucked up
She says I heard this joke
Frankly I'm just going to let you know
Don't wait for a punchline it's not my fault
That there's not really a good punchline it doesn't really have one
We're going to blame you
It's not my delivery it's the joke really a good punchline. It doesn't really have one. We're going to blame you.
It's not my delivery. It's the joke.
You be her. I'll be Robert De Niro.
Okay, so there's... Wait, hold on.
I need to get into character. Okay, yeah, me too.
So a woman is out on a date with this man and he just
got released from jail.
And the woman asks him, well, what did you
do? And he says, oh, I
hacked my wife into 52 pieces.
He thinks that's the joke.
He thinks that's the joke.
He thinks that's the end of the joke.
Like, oh, that's funny.
He cut up his wife.
She doesn't register that that's insane.
She keeps going.
And then she goes, ha ha.
She laughs that he's laughing.
But doesn't understand.
And then she goes, well, what did you do?
And he says, cut my wife up into 52 pieces. Ha ha. She laughs that he's laughing. But doesn't understand. Well, what did you do?
And he says.
Cut my wife up into 52 pieces.
Then that makes her laugh more and more and more.
And then he says, I can hack you up into 40.
No.
Yeah.
She goes, ha ha.
Ha ha ha.
Because she's so skinny and small.
Yeah.
She's like, well, I'm like, I'm pretty petite.
And he goes, I could probably hack you up into 40.
And then, yeah, cut to them having a really physical, intense.
I'm going to tell you guys right now, this is a very upsetting scene.
So just get ready to.
Yeah, this is really bad.
This is a really bad scene.
So they're having this like super physical makeout session. And he's like on he's on top of her and she's still laughing at the storm
and apparently that was iliana douglas's idea to keep laughing and it really throws you off
because you think that maybe it could go okay i was watching it being like don't wait no no no no
stop laughing read the cues read the keys read the keys it's like you see how this shit can really happen and it is
so upsetting terrifying he flips her over he says you gotta stay sober because i'm one hell of an
animal he flips her over and she's on her stomach handcuffs and she's like this is she's like
like how crazy at this point it's like i mean we're terrified because we know who he is but like
and i mean i think if i was having sex with a stranger and it was like this i would be like
but at this point it is just sex but he's being just a little aggressive yeah and it's not
physical it's not physically sexy yet they're just like hooking up but
you can tell it's getting there you
don't you can
see why she doesn't have total
cause to be alarmed
terrified yet that's right
but we're definitely getting
there getting there and then he
takes her arm and
um he
handcuffs the one arm back
I guess. Yeah. And then
he takes her other arm
and I, the
words are escaping me exactly what he says.
He says something like, it's
something like, you're not gonna like
this or something along those
lines. And he takes her
arm and it makes a sound that you don't
you've never really heard before yeah he really breaks her arm yeah he really breaks the shit
out of her arm and you and oh my and he's so good the transition he's like sort of laughing and like
being rough but like playing along with her and like handcuffing her and then like when he said
whatever that line is like yeah you're not gonna like handcuffing her. And then like when he said, whatever that line is, I'm like, yeah, you're not going to like this. Like his face turns fucking terrifying.
And you can tell that it's just like anger.
And then the cherry on top,
he does the arm thing,
which is,
it's really,
it's a sound,
it's a sound that you're like,
oh,
that's exactly what that would sound like.
And she's,
and at this point she's screaming.
She's terrified.
In extreme pain.
And then he reaches,
leans forward and he bites out her cheek.
A big old chunk out of her cheek.
And his face is all bloody and nasty.
And it's not good.
It's not.
It's bad, actually.
Good.
It sounds bad.
And he said he said something about
Matt or about Sam doesn't he or
like something like he alludes
to it being about him so
really I that part is so
extremely I don't know I kind of like
watching time to watch that yeah
but oh my god
she's in a lot of pain she's in a lot
of pain and she's like looking at him and she's
like why like what and he just like, why? Like what?
And he just and then you see we zoom out and we are outside of the window and it's sort
of like frosted glass and you see his silhouette just like punching and punching and punching
her.
It's horrible.
It is.
Oh no.
And we're like 45 minutes into that.
We're like deep into the movie at this point.
And I remember like he's been so scary the whole time
But
You haven't seen this
And all of a sudden you're like
Oh this is this fucking guy
It's scary
It is so scary
It's intense
Cut to they're at the
Sam's house and
He's like ding ding ding
And a key or he's like ding ding ding and a key
or he's like and there's no
sound because the key is out on
the piano. We saw him playing
the piano earlier. Sure there's a piano
motif. There's a reason we're talking about
it. Or we're not. Forget it. Or
you can forget it. Or you can just absolutely
One of the keys doesn't work but forget it.
Forget about it. Forget about it.
Okay. Sheriff calls the house. There's a break Forget about it. Forget about it. Okay.
Sheriff calls the house.
There's a break in the case.
Katie's raped another girl.
They're like, this is great news.
He's going to go back to jail because he raped another girl.
Thank God. Thank God.
We're so glad he raped somebody.
That's awesome.
We love that.
We love to hear it.
We love to see it.
The lieutenant is like, Katie, I mean, Katie definitely raped her.
She saw him like, oh no a neighbor saw him
heard screams saw him leaving the place or like it's definitely katie we've got him but
the girl is saying she fell down the stairs and it's very clear up on seeing her shouldn't fall
down that she's like oh no yeah i got i hit my knee yeah so they're like no he's like going and
talk to this girl he opens the door
it's the girl it's her she's very
embarrassed please don't look at me
um she says like
one of the scariest
moments she's really mad at him
um she's like you left me you stood me
up you stood me up and I
wanted to show you and then
she's like sobbing and she goes I guess
I really showed you I guess I really showed you.
Yeah.
I guess I really showed you.
Oh, my God.
It's heartbreaking.
I don't like that.
It's really a sad, sad sight for women in the world.
Yeah.
And then she says things that are very relevant
to this whole conversation where she is like.
Which, this movie is 30 years ago.
Yeah, it's cool
as she was saying it i was like fuck this is exactly the conversation yeah this is like what
we're talking about where he was like he's like you need to testify against this guy or he's gonna
do this kind of thing again you can't believe that and she says look i don't like i don't want
to go up there i don't want to explain what i was wearing I don't want to explain why I was alone at a bar why was I that drunk
yeah like I can't in front of
all of my colleagues like
that this is the shame
and embarrassment like professional embarrassment
I can't bear it and I've seen this happen
before and I know how they talk about
those girls and they and we go back
in the back room and we laugh about them
and we make fun of them and like I'm not
going to be one of those women. I can't do it.
It's so fucked up. It's
awful. Wow this movie
really touched on all of my biggest
fears.
Maybe it's really good that I watched it instead of you
because it is. That part I was like
oh my. It's really upsetting.
That's the point of this movie of like
yeah. So outside the police
lieutenant is talking to Sam and is like wondering if this would
best be handled quietly.
And the lieutenant says, you know, treat this guy like a tiger.
You've got to entrap him.
And Sam's like, no way.
And he's like, look, I'm not advising a citizen to take the law into his own hands.
I couldn't.
I could never do that.
I work within the law.
So obviously he's implying that. Yeah. take the law into his own hands i couldn't i could never do that i work within the law so
obviously he's implying that yeah um and is this does he give him the number of the private
detective or is he like i know a guy yeah that's right okay um um jodan baker plays claude the pi
claude is a real dope um and it's like one of the weird like comedic moments of the he's kind of like a comedic relief
and it doesn't really work it doesn't really work
that's okay and yeah and not everything
can work not everything and this
is one of them okay yeah and
then at home at dinner so he hires him
then at dinner
you know Lee tells
Danny look we've just hired a PI
everything's fine you guys let's
just have a normal summer everything's fine. You guys, let's just have a normal summer.
Everything's fine. Our dog was poisoned.
A guy is trailing us.
It's fine. Everything's fine.
He even says he's like, oh, we're not going to be
nervous now. We hired a PI.
He's such a good at his job.
We can be absolutely calm. The phone rings
and they all jump so high that their heads
go through the ceiling. It is absolutely
psychotic.
It goes Dutch.
Danny goes, I thought we were calm now.
Which is very funny.
And it's the PI calling
to say that there is an unsolved
crime that Katie fits the description for.
Subject's on the move. He's got a ghost.
This guy is like proving, you know, look, I found
I dug up more information on this guy. I'm on it.
I'm on it.
So they go after dinner. Sam goes upstairs and calls laurie at the hospital um unfortunately his wife is watching from the doorway um he's like how are you doing he tries to cover it up
at the end by going oh yeah yeah yeah that sounds good i gotta go okay bye bye bye bye and she's
livid she is very mad um she's beenvid. She is very
mad. She's been waiting to have this
fight, it seems, for a long time.
And it revealed
that this
is not the first time that
Sam has strayed. And in fact, it
is the reason that they moved to
this county, New Essex, instead
from Atlanta. She also goes like, that's
why he raped that girl, right. Because you're fucking her.
Like she like is on to it immediately and is like, I see what's happening.
She's he says to her at this point, though, he thinks that Katie raped Ileana Douglas
because she wouldn't testify against him.
She's a clerk.
He knows that.
Yeah.
This was going to cause a rift.
He's doing this on purpose to fuck with us us which is the first moment that you see this guy's
really gotten into his head if he
thinks that like to be so
like he did this to cause this fight
he's thinking how Katie thinks yeah he's like
this is like I'm
I'm she's a clerk she looks up
to me of course I like
feed into that but that's all it is
and Katie raped her because
he knew she wouldn't testify. So you would
think I was sleeping with her
and he is winning and we can't let him
win. And you are sort of like,
OK.
And he's like, we can work together
as a team. Let's do him sleeping on
the couch. He's mad about it.
He's not OK. Not OK.
Then we see the P.I., the aforementioned
P.I. who has been hired by Sam, and he is at a
bar.
Waitress brings him his food.
He's like, I didn't order food.
And she's like, oh, it's that gentleman over there.
Paid for by that guy.
Paid for by that guy.
And Katie is walking out the bar.
Also, as a PI, you definitely don't want the person you were secretly tailing to buy your meal.
No, that means you're not very good.
That means you're bad at your job. Yeah, exactly.
And he just
gets out there and tells Katie,
get out of the city, get out of this county,
get out of this state.
And Katie's not
bothered by it. He's like...
So then, Katie's rolling up on somebody
we like, and this time, it's Lee. And she's never met him katie's rolling up on somebody we like and this time it's lee and she's
never met him before he pulls up with the dog collar and he says here you go and he gives her
this collar and she says oh my gosh thank you my dog just died actually well it has an address on
it is that he's like i found this dog collar yeah and he says oh i can picture him now curling up at your feet while you finish those
pesky little sketches and she's like who are you yeah i think she's like you're max katie yeah
she's like oh fuck um and then yeah she's you know just basically telling him you know you can't you
can't bother me whatever get the fuck out of here. Get the fuck out of here. Fuck you. And then Danny runs out saying, mom, there's someone on the phone.
And that's when it all kind of falls apart.
And he has this moment of like, oh, yeah.
That's my type.
Yeah.
Oh, that's my type.
All right.
Because and she because she knows now Lee knows by now that he's raped a 16 year old.
He her husband told her.
So she sees she sees Danny outside and turns around is like danny get
in the house like don't be out here and turns around and he is he's gone it's not good news
it's not good news at all there's not a lot of good news coming no coming up um so the pi catches
sam at work he says the katie made him he saw him at a place and he knows who he is um and he says look maybe we should
get somebody to do a little hospital job um and three guys yeah three guys a lead pipe a bike
chain hospital job and sam says look i can't i a lawyer. I can't operate outside of the law. Then I think it may be one of the scariest scenes ever.
Danny is sitting alone at home and she gets a phone call and it's Katie on the phone.
So we've learned at this point that she is in summer school.
She's in summer school.
She's going to start the next day.
And she's about to start her first day in drama class.
And Katie
learned this somehow. How did he learn it?
I don't recall. It doesn't matter. It's important to
get drama class in.
In the summer.
So the reason why she has summer
school, and this is important, the reason
that she has summer school, she got caught
smoking weed and her choices were get
expelled or do summer school.
And her parents were really mad at her. It was a whole thing. They chose summer school. She got caught smoking weed and her choices were get expelled or do summer school. And her parents were really mad at her. It was a whole thing.
They chose summer school. So that's why
she's doing it.
Little did they know it would be legal in California.
Little did they know.
They were so stupid. In just a mere
30 years it would be legal
in California. And they live
in Georgia and so it's
fine. But if in 30 years. And they live in Georgia and so it's fine. Yeah, they should have waited.
But if in 30 years in the future and in a different state
it would be legal. That's my biggest
note. If only they'd known.
They should have waited. They should have waited.
So
Katie calls her
up on the phone. And he claims to be her new
drama teacher. Which even if he were
very weird phone call. And
it is a very very sexually
tense conversation with a lot of flirtation and a lot of like him doing the professory
kind of vibe of like i get you and no one else does like your parents oh they don't get you
i bet you're frustrated i bet he talks about her like body turning into a woman's body and that that's difficult and like what
let that go in your work yeah
use her anger in her work
and she's like he's
like sorry he's like I'm sorry you know
must be tough like having to go to
to summer school or whatever and she's
like shit happens you know the t-shirt
says which is one of my favorite
that's a
very good part of this movie is she is
a 100%
15 yeah it's really amazing
they're not trying even a little bit to be like
she's like kind of she's not she's a
she's a child dorky ass retainer
wearing 15 year old girl
right and that's what he wants and
it's nasty and we haven't seen
physically seen him in this conversation until
you cut to him and he is hanging
upside down in his
apartment. One of those pull up bars like upside
down. Doing pull ups while he's talking to her.
And he says
she's like so I'll see you tomorrow
right in room whatever whatever and he says
actually class has been moved to the theater.
Not good.
Then the next day at school
she's in an all white super super tight outfit she is excited to be
there she goes down to the basement no one comes with her dark always getting down to the theater
getting the sense that maybe drama class isn't down here today she's definitely not feeling
seems like an empty confident in this choice yeah seems like an empty room. Yeah, she doesn't feel great.
It's spooktacular. And then
they go, she goes inside the theater
and inside a
Hansel and Gretel house
on the stage, like a set,
there's Katie
and he's smoking a joint
and she's like, you can't smoke grass in
school.
And he's like, he's his inhibitions officer some and she's like you can't smoke grass in school and he's like eases inhibitions office um officer
some and she's like can't handle it and he's like i think we're alone now and she's like
oh wow he's cool he knows tiffany and so he uh she takes a hit she takes a hit he puts it out
on his tongue and she's like whoa ow
She can't believe it
Then he just basically talks to her like she's an adult
If you're talking to a child like they're an adult
It's just the like fake thing of like
You know what you're doing
And talks about smoking weed and it's like
That's a crime that's not even a crime
I bet your parents were so mad at you when you got caught
They don't get it man
I fucking get it
She says where are you from?
And he says, I'm from the Black Forest.
And she says,
you're not the drama teacher,
are you? And
he says, maybe I'm the big bad wolf.
And she's
like, she sort of starts crying.
You're the guy that's been hanging out around
the house.
She's like, I'm really scared. You killed my mom's dog. And he out around the house. She's like, I killed my mom's dog.
You killed my mom's dog.
And he denies doing it.
He's like, no, I would never do that.
And she fully believes him. She's like, oh, okay.
Okay, cool. But he admits to being the guy
hanging around the house.
He wants her to like that.
It works. Right. He's like, I'm hanging around because I like you.
Right. And I'm like,
your dad isn't a good guy. And I'm just, I'm trying to help you right and I'm like your dad isn't a good guy and I'm just I'm trying to help
your dad yeah you know how your dad
isn't good like he got he
freaked out about you smoking weed and
that's not cool and like I've learned some
lessons I'm trying to help your dad
she says are you gonna hurt me
and she says no way he says no way
Danielle and then randomly
says as he said this multiple times
the movie every man has
to go through hell to meet his paradise and she's like oh okay um and then he's like you thought
about me last night didn't you and that makes her blush so hard that her crush just said that to her
and she admits that she did yeah and he asked if if it's okay if she if he puts his arm around her. No. And she gives that like, oh my God, this is so embarrassing.
Yes, fine, you can do it.
And so he walks up.
And instead of putting his arm around her, he takes his thumb.
I watched it and I hate it.
He puts it in her mouth
Oh no
And she clearly doesn't really know
What to do with it
So he does it twice
So he pulls it out
And she didn't really know she kind of sucked on it
And the second time perfectly
Pitch perfectly she both sucks on it
And also doesn't want it in her mouth
It's very clear. But she is
really enjoying the sexual attention.
And then
he says
goodbye. Well, he kisses her.
Oh my God. Right. I'm so sorry.
Then he fucking kisses her.
He grabs her by the kisses.
On the mouth, full tongue.
She has no idea what's going on.
She's like into it but not participating because she doesn't idea what's going on she's like into it but not participating
because she doesn't know what's going
on and then he leaves
and immediately she
starts flipping out and becomes like a hurt
abused child and like starts crying and
freaking out and like runs out of there like
it's so it is exactly how
it is like she's like
caught up and is like oh I think he's
hot I don't know he's paying attention to me
yeah I'm into it and then he leaves and she's just
like oh fuck
this was not okay yeah it's bad
it's bad oh my god it's so
upsetting it's so upsetting it's so
hard to watch
so cut to home Sam clearly
knows what happened at school today and he calls
the PI and says look let's we're gonna do
the hospital job
he followed my daughter what the
hell is this and the PI is like you told me to watch
him nights like this
the day time I'm like fuck man I don't know
meanwhile cut to the PI
he's putting Jim Beam and Pepto
Bismol into a mug because that's his drink
and he's done it he does it again later
he does it again later it's disgusting he's not good
nasty yeah
um then Sam's And he's done it. He does it again later. He does it again later. It's disgusting. He's not good. Nasty. Yeah.
Then Sam's at a diner and Katie is there, too.
And he's waxing poetic about life. And he says that he's going to be that like Sam's going to be hurting like you wouldn't
believe and that he's going to be forced to understand commitment.
It's just like yet another scene where it's Katie's intimidating Sam.
Yeah.
And that's when sam threatens
him and he's like he's yeah he goes like hey you want to leave town before tomorrow like you want
to leave town tonight or you're going to be hurting like you wouldn't believe and katie goes and this
is the point i was like oh no katie goes say that one more time. Repeat that. And he goes, leave town tonight or you're going to be hurting like you wouldn't believe.
And he was like, OK, thanks.
See ya.
I don't feel good about that.
So we're now we're at the hospital job, you guys.
It's happening.
There's three dingoes with a lead pipe and a bike chain are descending on Max Katie.
And Sam has the bright idea to hide behind a dumpster and watch it all happen.
So stupid.
It's really that's that's is one of my big notes that that wasn't that wasn't like the slickest, coolest.
Yeah, that was very stupid.
Stay home for this one.
Yes.
Just wait for the phone call, my dude.
They so these three guys are descending on Max.
They start beating him.
It seems like they're winning.
Looks like it's going well.
But you know what?
This guy's been working out in jail for 14 years.
Working and reading.
Exercising his body and his mind.
He's become the perfect man.
And so he takes a turn and he starts winning.
Yeah, he starts. He like takes their lead pipe.
He's beating the shit out of them.
And he's like been bloodied. Like he's got like
his shirt is like he's fucked up
but he also does not care.
And he starts beating the shit
out of all of them. And then
there's some noise by the dumpster.
Sam sees it happening
he's like oh this this changed and he goes to get up and like kicks a can yeah he does something
real obvious it's like scooby-doo level like i'm over here max is like counselor counselor
yeah i don't really remember what happens he starts like walking towards him and
like saying things to him like i can't be brought down counselor it's not gonna go like this
and like making this big old speech and he like starts walking forward as like
and as he gets so and sam is like freaking the fuck out as he gets close he just finally goes
like feel there doesn't even matter and like throws the lead pipe and just leaves.
Just leaves.
Because he has something bigger planned.
Yep.
He does not care to get him in that moment.
Oh boy.
But it is very scary.
So the next day, Sam's talking to his colleague
and he goes like, hey, call this guy.
This guy is an amazing lawyer.
Get him on your side to to like i don't know fucking expedite oh he's trying to expedite the restraining order yeah he's like i've got this
guy's like this shit is about to get out of control um so that he calls the lawyer and he's
like my my colleague said you're the best lawyer i can get. Played by Gregory Peck. Played by Gregory Peck.
And he goes.
But he goes, my colleague told me you're the best.
I need you to help me get a restraining order against Max Cady.
And as soon as he says his name, the lawyer goes, oh, I'm sorry.
I can't be having this conversation.
Oh, boy.
Max Cady put me on retainer as of this morning.
So I can't help you.
I'm so sorry.
I can't even have this conversation.
And I have a meeting with him right now.
So I guess I'll get more information anyway.
See you.
Bye.
Hangs up.
Oh, boy.
They go to the trial for the restraining order.
And guess who was taping a certain conversation we had earlier.
In which Sam was threatening Max with pain.
With pain.
And we look at Max Katie
in the trial and he's just had the shit beat out of him
by the hospital job
and he's playing the victim so now the implication
is Sam threatened him
Sam beat the shit out of him
and now
he's got a restraining order against
Sam instead of
against Sam and now Sam
is on threat of being
disbarred because he threatened and beat the shit out of a man so it seems oh no things are not
oh no things are not looking good this is not going well things continue to not go well and
i'm just gonna have to tell you that yeah that's true i'm worried um he goes through his pi friend
amped up he wants a gun uh pi walks
him through the consequences of what it would mean to like shoot somebody and he's like god
i just you need to just come you need to come be at my house we've got to like set a trap here um
yes because so they so he's like if you shoot him you're going to jail like if you kill shoot
and kill him you're going to jail regardless Like if you kill, shoot and kill him, you're going to jail regardless. Right.
But if he trespasses on your property and then you shoot him, then you're fine.
And he's about to have to go to North Carolina for his potential disbarment hearing.
And it's mandatory.
And he was like, and Katie knows it's mandatory.
Katie knows you're going to have to leave town. So he'll only enter your house if he knows you're out of town.
So if we make him think you're out of town, he comes in, we shoot him.
Then you're fine.
A foolproof plan.
Yeah, a foolproof plan.
Perfect.
So the family drives him to the airport and they pretend like he's getting on the plane.
We think, I mean, we kind of think maybe he is getting on the plane.
Turns out, we see, we cut to them back at home.
He's getting out of the car. He's getting out of the truck. Hiding in the trunk.
Oh boy. So they got him.
They got him. I don't know why I said that.
He got himself home. He got
himself home. So the PI
sets up traps all through the house.
So he sets up a trap being so he
puts like fishing line against all
the doors and windows okay and ties
them to like a little teddy bear today teddy bear and so if the teddy bear moves any single door
window opens the teddy bear will move he'll be able to know that katie is has entered the house
yeah okay spooktacular again foolproof and spooktacular and spooktacular. And spooktacular. So everyone goes to bed.
P.I.'s downstairs.
The teddy bear moves.
He goes towards the movement.
It's nothing.
It's just a shutter.
He closes the shutter.
The window's opening the window.
Then all of a sudden, Nick Nolte, the actor, jolts up and he says to his wife, I feel like
he's already in the house. already well we have this weird scene
this weird again like hitchcocky moment he opens his eyes and oh right and i and fucking max katie
is standing there staring at him smoking his cigar and he like blinks super hard and opens
his eyes he's gone but then he wakes his wife up and he goes I just had the craziest feeling that he is already inside her house
so downstairs
the PI is checking the remaining
doors and windows and just
you know double checking everything he
sits down at the table to
pour himself a lovely Jim Bean and Pepto
Bismol
Graciela the maid is
mopping the floor he's like talking to her
he's like oh Graciela crazy night huh yep and Graciela the maid is mopping the floor. He's like talking to her. He's like, oh, Graciela.
Crazy night, huh?
And Graciela
turns around
and Graciela
is not Graciela.
Oh, shit. It is.
Max Katie a la Mrs. Doubtfire.
Max Katie dressed up as Graciela.
And it is fucking
scary. He's wearing her hair, so you know where
he got it. Oh no, he's wearing a scalp.
A Hannibal Lecter style scalp.
And he kills the
PI with
the missing piano wire.
Strangled.
In the hubbub,
the PI shoots his gun.
Nick Nolte, the actor, hears it.
He runs downstairs
with his family
and sees
well so they hear the gunshot
from upstairs in the bedroom and they're like oh
fuck no no and he starts calling out for the
PI he's like hey his name is Kersick
Kersick Kersick no answer
one of them I think Lee looks
out the window and sees Max
Maxie Maxie running.
So they like know that Max Katie's not in the house anymore.
Yeah.
So they go downstairs, see two bodies.
Graciela and Graciela.
The daughter comes.
Danny comes down.
She starts screaming because she loved Graciela.
She talks about the Robo Olympia.
Yeah.
One of the worst things that happens in this movie is that Nick Nolte
and worst and
craziest
but also kind of realistic
in a moment like this. He comes down
and checks on the PI
to see if he's really dead even though the
entire floor is covered in blood.
And he fucking
slip and slides everywhere
with the blood. And his wife comes and tries to help
and it is like a comedy of errors
where they're all like
they're like screaming covered in
other people's fresh dead blood
and it is
it's like that Park Stratocaster
scene when they're all on the ice skating rink
and they're all trying to get to the podium
on the ice skating rink
they just start it's like it's it's really awful cut to they're in a car driving away
they're gone baby they're going to cape fear and he says something about like technically yes we're
fugitives because you can't flee a murder scene we had to get the fuck out of town yeah this was
not good and he um they're at this, like, market. Gas station situation.
Yeah, and he's on a phone booth call,
and he's like, yeah, we had to get away.
We're like, yes, we're fugitives.
But, like, he's starting to see,
he's starting to see that, like, legally, this is not good.
And that's what the genius of this movie
is that in this moment,
you are lulled into a false sense of security
because you believe that the worst thing that could happen is that in this moment you are lulled into a false sense of security because you believe that the worst
thing that could happen
is that
he is like going to be
responsible for these crimes in this moment
you feel such relief there's
no music it's just they're breezy
they're walking around
they walk to the car
I'm oh my god
say it
they walk to the car. I'm. Oh, my God. Say it.
They walk to the car.
They drive. They put the groceries in.
They drive away.
The camera doesn't move.
It just stays.
It's a locked off shot.
And under the car.
Strapped to the chassis of the car is Max.
He is under.
He is literally under car engine of the car.
And I...
Wait, okay.
The Simpsons does a whole fucking episode.
Yes, about Cady.
Yes, I watched it last night.
And Sideshow Bob is...
Yes.
It's all coming together.
And that's based on that.
Yeah.
I truly...
And I haven't seen that episode of The Simpsons.
When I was watching this,
I... Literally, my jaw dropped.
Is that the end?
No.
Oh, my God, no.
I kind of wish it was the end. It would be cool.
But I truly, when I saw him in the car, I truly was, I almost sent you guys a picture
of me just being like, like, I truly was like, no!
Like, you know it's not over
you know he's coming back but seeing him under
the fucking car was
so insane they're driving
to Cape Fear
driving to the houseboat they haven't even gotten to fucking
Cape Fear yet that's how far away
we are from the end of this movie
don't worry I only have one more paragraph
left okay Kathleen only has one more
paragraph left so we're getting to the houseboat.
We get on the houseboat.
Yeah.
And it's tense, you guys.
It's not a fun, happy family time.
I would imagine not.
Truly, I don't know why I choose to have a houseboat.
Oh, but there is a funny moment.
So he gets, so they park and they get on the houseboat.
And then Max Cady unstraps himself from under the car and like gets out.
He's like wearing all camo.
And he gets out from under the car and like stands up. And it's all camo and he gets out from under the car and like stands
up and it's like he looks like he
I mean it's hot and covered in
car oil and dust and dirt
and has like scabs from being
like under the car but he doesn't fucking
care and he gets out and he stands up and he
looks and a woman across the street sees him do that
and looks at him crazy and he's just like
yeah that's me and just like goes
to the bathroom and cleans
himself up and doesn't fucking care and gets ready for the next part ready for the next part um
so the big part they're in uh they're in the the houseboat they're i wouldn't say they're having
fun i would say they're a little bit nervous um the weather's not so good um it's raining
really hard and kind of stormy and things are kind of
knocking the boat around.
And he
goes to untie
down the boat. Put down the anchor.
Put down the anchor. Yeah, because they're
settling in for the night.
And she says as he's going up,
we're going to make some tea.
And it's also raining really hard.
At one point they hear a noise and they look
out and he's like oh no it's just sheets of rain
it's not it's not just sheets of rain
but they think it's just sheets of rain he goes
to put the anchor down
and unfortunately
the anchor is no longer
there the line not not nope
oh just kidding I'm sorry the anchor's down
but Max Cady
pulls him up from the roof arm around Cady pulls him up from the roof.
That's right.
I'm so sorry.
Arm around his throat, pulls him up onto the roof, strangling him.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Max Cady is on the boat or in the water?
On the roof of the houseboat.
Okay, okay.
So when we earlier heard a noise and then he looked down and was like, oh, it's just
rain.
It wasn't.
It was Max Cady getting onto the roof.
Getting onto the boat.
Got it.
So he goes to lower the anchor.
He does it.
And as he turns around, Max Cady strangles him, pulls him up onto the roof, knocks him
out, hog ties him.
Then he goes down into the houseboat and talks to his friends, the girls.
Yeah.
Max Cady walks in and is like, hello.
Hello, ladies.
Hello, ladies. I'm here.
They are not happy.
No. I imagine not.
He is having a direct conversation
with Danny and so she is playing
this flirtation and
hard to know if it's knowing flirtation
or whatever. She loved Graciela.
She loved Graciela. And is not happy that Graciela was murdered.
Right. Right. Right. Right. Probably a turning point
for her. And as she's kind of flirting with him, all of a sudden she has this crazy turn.
She takes the boiling water and pours it on Max.
She like throws it in his face.
And it's boiling water, so he should react.
And it's like in his face.
It's in his face and all over his body.
He doesn't react?
He does not react.
I don't like that. I don't either.
I really don't like it either.
And he goes, oh, you wanted to serve me
something hot. He takes a
flamethrower and as he is
a flamethrower, that's not what it is.
A flare. It was a flare.
And as he is discussing
the many pains that he has gone
through in his life, he lights
the flare and boiling wax is pouring down his hand.
And he's just holding it up, not reacting.
And he grabs Dani and he throws her into the hole.
He is making a lot of comments about he locks her like where the life vests are.
He locks the daughter down in the hole
and is now getting ready to rape the mother.
The mother.
And then as he's going to, he pulls back a curtain
and you see that Nick Nolte's face is smushed up
against the window so that he would have to watch
his wife being raped by Max.
And inside the hole hole we see that Danny
is she's found some lighter fluid
so we're glad about that
she's lighting a bunch of matches to try to
see she's being really smart and seeing like
what is down here what can I use she's locked
in but she's just like what can I find
find some lighter fluid sort of like tucks it into
her waistline of her pants and hides it under
her shirt okay
but he is starting to try to rape Lee also.
Right.
How does Sam get into the houseboat again?
He brings Sam in.
So when he comes into the houseboat,
he, she, Lee is immediately like,
my husband has a gun.
And he was like, oh, this gun?
And he has taken the gun.
And has it in his,
he has it in the back of his waist,
waistband of his pants. So when he's on top of her
trying to rape her she starts like grabbing
for it he gets up and he's like
I see what you're trying to do why don't we bring your
husband in here so he then goes
out and like grabs Sam and brings him in and is
like oh you're about to essentially
watch me rape your wife and daughter
yeah so then he brings
then he brings her out.
From under the hole.
And he tells them to take off.
Well, he takes.
He handcuffs them together.
Handcuffs them together.
And then.
And then Lee does this whole fucking crazy thing where she's like, listen, ever since I met you.
I really have been thinking a lot about you and the troubles that you've gone through.
And it must just be so hard to be you and I relate and
I've had troubles so
and she does this long appeal and the
conclusion of it is
so because of that don't rape her
just rape me just rape me don't rape my daughter
please because you and I have this connection I feel connected
to you doesn't work
he gets them to get down on
their knees and ask them to take off their clothes
and he's as he's lighting a cigarette Danny takes the lighter fluid he gets them to get down on their knees and ask them to take off their clothes.
And as he's lighting a cigarette,
Danny takes the lighter fluid and sprays it.
And he catches on fire.
His whole face and upper body just like huge flames.
He jumps into the water.
Yeah.
At some point here or before, who yeah uh sam nick nolte the actor
cuts the cuts the um rope holding down to the anchor right um and so
fucking max katie burned jumps in the water sinking down you just see one shot of a hand
reaches up and grabs the rope frayed edge of the rope that is
still connected to the boat this motherfucker will not die he will not die because he has nothing to
live for so why would he let himself die so then he's back up on the boat he's got him you know
at gunpoint i guess he like crawls back up and he does a mock trial of sam and it and we should also point out
his face looks burned and melted he looks not nasty and he does this mock trial where he
prosecutes sam for not defending really defending him when that was the job that he was meant to
have right um and he uh he speaks directly to camera as if the camera
like the audience members the jury were the jury yeah which is a little on the nose but frankly
i kind of like it in the moment i think it's kind of fun and um he's holding a gun to sam's face
um the somehow the girls managed the girls, they managed to
unhandcuff themselves.
Yeah. Basically
what happens now is the storm
that we had seen coming has
now gotten bad and they're not anchored to
the ground. Right. So
the storm itself, I think, starts
throwing them around. And as he's like trying
to intimidate them, he's
dad is like, please let me drive this boat. We're gonna all get killed. We're all gonna die. And as he's like trying to intimidate them, he's the dad is like,
please let me drive this boat.
We're going to all get killed.
We're all going to try to drive the boat.
And he's like,
don't know,
like keep the trail going.
So they start getting thrown around at some point.
They get thrown off the boat.
No,
Danny and,
and Lee jump off the boat.
They're like,
we have to escape when we can jump into the water. Fuck it. And they both jump off the boat. They're like, we have to escape when we can. Jump
into the water. Fuck it. And they
both jump off. Nick Nolte,
the actor, can't because he's
handcuffed. He ends up being handcuffed
or something. Right.
And it's basically like a washer
dryer
situation of the
boat starts flipping over and
over. They're over flipping they're fighting
each other they're punching each other they're flipping there's a gun it's the craziest sequence
now it's just the two of them on a flipping boat in the middle of a storm yeah um who's gonna get
tossed out who knows who knows somehow again where do these handcuffs come from? Who knows? Sam handcuffs Katie's leg to a pole.
Yeah.
And then, yeah, the boat literally gets, like, chopped up in the water as if it's, like, going through a fucking, like, wood chipper.
Yeah, it's nuts.
And it's just this metal pole left, and they both get thrown onto the shore.
But Max Katie's leg is handcuffed to this pole, and
it starts sinking into the water.
And then, no guns left, so they
just start beating each other with boulders.
Huge rocks. Huge ass, gigantic.
Throwing rocks at each other.
Um, and
you think one gives the final blow, and then you think
the other gives the final blow, and
finally... And Cady's, like, laughing.
He is not. He does not feel pain.
He is extremely terrifying.
And then Nick Nolte, the actor, deals the final blow.
Picks up this huge boulder.
Because Max, Katie's like lying on the ground.
Yeah.
And you think he's about to smash his head mid-Somar style.
Yeah, yeah. With a big old rock.
He goes to smash it.
I'm not positive because I closed my eyes.
So he goes to smash his head.
And he does
hurt him, but it also dislodges
the piece of the boat from the shore.
And the shore, they're floating
away and floating away.
He's floating away. Max Cady's now like in the
middle of the water tied to this pole. He's floating away. Max Cady's now like in the middle of the water tied
to this pole. He's being dragged along.
He lifts his head up.
You think he's dead? He lifts his head up
and he starts speaking in tongues. And this is
the point at which I was like acting is
crazy. Tell me more. I want to know every detail.
This is where I'm interested.
It is. It's he
I mean he is overtaken. If he weren't Robert De Niro
if this okay if this was this man's first movie everyone would be like okay sir. Alright man It's he. I mean, he's overtaken. If this OK, if this was this man's first movie, everyone would be like, OK, sir.
All right, man.
That's crazy.
Too big of a swing.
Yeah.
But because he's fucking Robert De Niro.
It works.
You buy it.
You buy it.
It's fucking cool because he really feels, as he said in the movie multiple times, like
you have to go through hell to reach your paradise.
Like I've gone through hell and I'm I'm going to meet the kingdom of God.
Like I am there.
Right.
Yeah.
This is my time.
He felt as though he was ascending into heaven.
This is him reaching oblivion.
Yeah.
He dealt God's hand.
This is like Jesus camp before Jesus camp.
Before Jesus camp.
They almost called it Jesus camp, but they knew it would be taken.
And then as it floats off and he's still speaking in tongues.
And he's like like he's sinking
he's clearly like about to drown there's no way around it and he keeps then he's talking straight
to sam more just intimidating shit and then you just a beautiful shot of just seeing underwater
his ankle pull the um handcuff up to the the highest point on the pole and then he just goes down into the water.
Like he gets away off of the
pole. No, no, no.
He finally drowns.
He sort of goes up. He fights it as long
as he can and then it's just like, oh, you're
just going to sink and he drowns.
And the family. They all find each other
somehow. They find each other on
the shore. They're alive.
They all hug.'re all okay they
look crazy and then this is the last part of the movie the last two lines this is the craziest part
of the movie and this is the part of the movie that made me when i texted you guys after i was
like this movie's fucking wild it is because of this final set of lines with danielle yeah so
danny goes just voiceover over all of this that we got at the beginning
seems she says we never spoke about what happened at least not to each other we never spoke about
what happened i'm sorry we never spoke about what happened i see what you mean that that's a little weird. That's a little weird. We're hearing this line as they sit on a muddy shore.
Like rediscovering their family being alive.
Hugging.
A huge thing just happened.
Huge.
It's very big.
Never spoke about what happened.
How is that possible?
Well, I'll tell you why she says fear i suppose that to remember his name
and what he did would mean letting him into our dreams and me i hardly dream about him anymore
still things won't ever be the way like they were before he came and that's all right because if you
hang on to the past you die a little every day and for myself i know i'd rather
live and then she literally says the end and it zooms in on her eyes and it's weird spectacular
spooktacular um this movie blew my fucking mind wow it sounded crazy and honestly terrifying
it's very very scary real life terrifying OK, I do have a question about
this. Robert De Niro really
wanted to make this movie, huh?
It is. It is alarming to
want to play this role, but you should
watch it. But all actors get it like
actors want to play weird things. And also
like you don't leave this movie being like, well,
I see where he's coming from.
You're like, oh, Max is a horrible demon.
Like, you know, yeah. Watching this a horrible demon like you don't yeah watching
this i was like especially the moment in the hospital with with um uh what's what is her name
eliana douglas um laurie it is so relevant to what the conversation still is and so it doesn't
it was actually i was very surprised when i read the description of this movie was like,
oh, it's about like a rapist.
That's going to be not good.
I mean, it's not good, but it's great.
It's great.
But but it does.
It doesn't diminish that crime.
If anything, it really, really makes us feel worse about it.
If anything, it makes it more frustrating
that it's still the problem
that it is. I mean, the fact
that people are still having to use that
same reasoning for not
telling
people that what's actually happened to them
is because
the same thing will happen to them. It's been
30 years and it's the same fucking
situation and it's depressing
it is depressing it is depressing i'm so sorry let's end the podcast and it's it's depressing
wow um kathleen thank you thank you for um giving me a reason to watch this movie and and you know
it it wasn't it's scary in a real way it wasn't scary in a way that I couldn't watch it.
But I think because of how scared I was and then I still did it.
It was a growth moment for me.
I think so.
And maybe next time I'll be able to do even more.
Wow.
Henley, are you going to watch this movie?
Yes.
Tonight when I go home.
You guys, I know you can't see Henley, but it's clear from looking at her that she's
actually not going to go see the
movie tonight. I'm unconvinced.
She's putting on my jacket and my backpack
and I'm out the door already.
She started the movie on her phone.
She has a DVD copy of Cape Fear
in her hands. Ouch. And
watching it already.
I'm going to get in my Dodge Caravan with a DVD.
She has her chauffeur in my Dodge Caravan with a DVD. She has her chauffeur
driving the Dodge Caravan
so she can watch on the DVD
player from the back seat.
Should we
end it with
Max Cady's voice?
I'm going to teach you a thing or two about laws.
