This is a HeadGum Podcast.
This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves.
I'm Emily and I am too scared to watch scary movies.
I'm Henley and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies.
I'm Sammy and I love watching scary movies and so I watch them so that you don't have to.
And oh my freaking God, I missed you guys.
Wow, we missed you so much.
I feel like I've been gone for one million years. It was episode one episode that i missed one episode it was only one episode what
isn't that crazy it feels like it was uh yeah a really long time i mean it was awful i said it
before i'll say it again it was staring into a deep dark abyss not having you present i i felt
that way on my end as well on our regular recording time
Sunday afternoon
staring into my own abyss.
Suddenly found yourself,
where am I?
I feel like I'm supposed to be somewhere else.
But I'm very excited to be back
and I'm excited to talk about this week's movie.
And if you, dear listener,
can't wait to hear the recap for this movie, you can navigate to the recap in the timestamps on the show notes. Because first, I got to ask you guys if anything scary happened to you this week.
I've been racking my brain for something.
and I just remembered that yesterday I actually did do something very scary which was I watched Alice in Wonderland with Silas have you guys seen it recently no not recently no not recently it is
and we're talking the original cartoon not the Johnny Depp one right oh yeah no I imagine both
could have been scary experiences probably hit probably hit at the same scary things.
Drastically different experience.
No, I've never seen the Johnny Depp one.
No, this was Alice in Wonderland 1951, first of all.
Holy shit.
Long time ago.
Wait, I do want to say, sorry, I just remembered that when we went to see Willy Wonka at Universal
Studios, the cashier at the candy store that we went to to get chocolate asked him.
He said to Emily, I love your outfit.
Are you dressed as the Mad Hatter?
She wasn't.
No, I was wearing clothes from my own closet.
I was wearing my own clothes.
My own outfit.
That is things that I just wear.
Were you wearing a top hat and a bow tie?
I was wearing a top hat and a bow tie? I was wearing a top hat and a bow tie
and my hair was curled way
out sideways, but that was just what
I was doing.
Oh, and I was at the register next to her
and I saw him get so nervous
and try to backtrack so hard. He was like,
oh, I know. Oh, sorry.
It's just... I know. I could
have humored him, but I just didn't have it
in me. It was too funny to be like, no.
No, I'm not dressed like that either.
She was wearing bright colors.
I'm wearing a theme park to be fair to him.
True.
And I do dress crazy to be fair to him.
True, true.
But anyway, no, haven't seen Allison.
So I was inspired to revisit it with silas because we also watched on youtube
the alice in wonderland remix song called like pogo or something from 16 years ago
did you guys ever listen to this no no not ringing any bells
it's like remixing all the little noises whatever that was it hits it still hits it's so good
it's so good so sass and i watched that he was entranced obviously so i was like we gotta watch
the film and i'm worried it really scared him he was just like looking at early disney movies
fucked up they are scary beauty and the Beast really fucked me up.
Nokia fucked me up.
One thing that I noticed about it is everyone has an angry face.
Everyone looks pissed off.
Tweedledum and Tweedledee, very angry.
Cheshire Cat, very angry.
When he's not manically happy.
The emotions that are being
displayed are
more scary in a way
than the actual content of the film.
Yeah.
Anyway, I'm a little worried about the repercussions
of that. I'm not sure if there are going to be consequences down
the line. Joel would say that that's an
important part of growing up is to be
a little bit scared. He thinks
Disney World and Disney in general
is supposed to scare you a little bit.
I'm on board
with that.
I'm ready for parenting advice from Joel.
I want Joel to just send me
parenting advice. Joel, not a parent, doesn't really
want to be.
He's got thoughts and he's very smart.
Anyway, so
Alice in Wonderland. You guys gotta. Anyway, so Alice in Wonderland.
You guys got to just look up this Alice in Wonderland remix on YouTube, too.
I'm a DJ now and I feel like I'm really happy, though, because also the aesthetic of Alice in Wonderland is like unbelievable and really fun really fun so that was my thing what about you guys tell me about you I don't even know what I would have talked about otherwise
because I guess what's scary is that every single thing in my life that happened to me before
watching challengers has been wiped from my brain
and you're gonna talk about challenges i literally i didn't exist before challengers and i and
nothing matters before challengers and nothing matters except challengers and i am now challengers
nice to meet you i'm challengers are you Are you going to learn how to play tennis?
No, because it's not tennis, Henley. It's Challengers.
It's specifically the movie Challengers.
It's I.
I think it was the best experience of my entire life.
It's so fun.
And it's really funny.
It was very unexpected for Luca Guadagnino. I haven't thought of him as a great comedic director but it's very funny
oh i'm excited to see it was so good and like i it also just the experience of i i'm like i'm still
buzzing like my body i feel it in the molecules of my body, that movie. And I just can't do anything but talk about it or think about it.
And I don't know if I ever will be able to do anything else.
I did learn some trivia that the writer of Challengers is married to the writer of Past Lives.
I saw that too.
That's pretty cool.
And I want to know who their third person is.
Wow. And what his deal is who their third person is. Wow.
And what his deal is, because you know he exists.
He also used to be like a viral YouTube sensation doing some kind of weird character on YouTube.
Oh, the writer of Challengers?
Yeah. And I can't remember the details, but I did see that also in this article that I read.
And I didn't know who the person was, but it's kind of funny to imagine like a meme like a person who's a meme then going on to be a very successful
filmmaker but anyway I'm curious it's great it's so great it's so Emily is wearing a tennis
sweatshirt right now that I made for challengers which is to say i bought a little
iron-on patch and put it on a sweatshirt but this is me now and this will be me forever okay
sammy do you feel this way too because you saw it as well right it's i think it's my favorite
movie of the year so far yeah i really loved it um i thought about i thought about thinking about playing tennis
today it was like a joke of a thought
I was like I'm not actually going to but like imagine
if I did
but what I did do this past week was
go to Europe
for a family
wedding
wait something else did happen before town.
BC.
This was last week, BC.
And I was in Stockholm for my cousin's wedding.
And then I have some family in Germany that I visited.
And they don't speak any English.
They only speak German.
And my German is not very good.
And we were with them for four days.
My mom speaks functional German enough to translate so that we can have pretty surface
level conversations.
But at first it was like very exciting because I was like, oh, I can understand what people
are saying.
I am not bilingual. And so this was my first experience with this kind of feeling of like,
I'm noticing that I'm thinking in German and like trying to have like translate things in my mind.
And it was very cool at first and very exciting. And then I kind of reached the extent of my
German knowledge. Cause at first it was like, how was the flight? And I was like, I learned how to say this stuff.
Let me tell you a tale.
The Flugzeug.
I'll tell you a thing or two about the, see, I get nervous and now I can't even think of a single word in German.
But basically the introduction stuff is what I'm most skilled at.
And so after the first day, it was like, well, now what do we talk about?
Did you use your phone?
Like there's Google Translate and stuff, right?
Yes, I did a bit.
But I just it was really fascinating because you have to feel comfortable sounding like a child when you speak.
to feel comfortable sounding like a child when you speak. Like I was getting nervous to talk because I know every time I talk, it's going to be like, me too. I like food. Food here good.
Yes. That's what's hard. It's like a performance anxiety thing as much as anything else.
And the performance anxiety was doubling each, like it was getting worse and worse. I was like,
now I don't, I like wasn't going the other other way like you would think like the more you do it the
more comfortable you feel which I guess is probably true long term but in these
four days for me I was getting more and more nervous like you sound so fucking
stupid why didn't I learn more German before this and it was a really
wonderful spending time with my family. But by the end of
it, I was just like, please, God, I need to like, speak English with people again, and use be able
to form regular sentences without having to pause between every single word. I realized I just paused
before that word. And that is kind of my speech pattern in general. But these pauses were longer when I was speaking German.
Oh, man, that's so stressful. Because also, it's like having to make small talk on top of
in a different language.
There was also like moments where I was like, I think I'm accidentally offending them. There
was a part where I said in German, is it normal to have bigger lunches and smaller dinners?
Because that's what they were preparing for us.
And I felt like my great uncle was like mad that I was like complaining like this dinner
is so small.
So do you guys have tiny baby bitch dinners here or what?
Be like, no, I really like it.
Schmeckt so good.
It's hard it's exhausting it's why we were saying this is why babies are so tired all the time yeah because they're like they're constantly learning and trying so hard and thinking so hard
and just so exhausting yeah man we gotta give more credit to babies they're doing so much
okay honestly though babies get a lot of, babies get a lot of credit.
Babies get a lot of credit.
I think they're actually fine.
Okay, okay, yeah, you're right.
But then another scary thing that that led to was that when I got back, my jet lag wasn't too bad.
Again, I used that app that Emily recommended, Time Shifter, but I was a little more loose about it this time and
had a very long travel day on my return trip. So kind of went out the window after a while. But
I put on this week's movie at 7pm the day after I came home, 7pm thinking that's a fine time,
I'll be fine. Fell asleep immediately. And then woke up at 4 a.m and watched this movie i was like well i want to
still i want to watch it while it's still dark and so watched it at 4 a.m which was um a very
kind of fun experience the world was quiet it was just me in my living room watching this week's movie which is ex machina came out in 2015 written and directed
by alex garland starring alicia vikander donald donald gleason it's donal i looked up how to
pronounce it it's donal it's tonal donal like donut but donal like tonal with a d is how he said it
i watched a clip of him explaining how to pronounce it.
Isn't there an M in there?
Yes, there is.
Don't say it, though.
It's a silent M.
I think I always...
Dom-nal.
Nope.
Donal, like tonal with a D.
Donal.
How about that?
Donal Gleeson and Oscar Isaac.
It is streaming on HBO Max.
And we have a guest with us today to talk about this film.
She is a writer and comedian, Raina Morris.
Welcome.
Hello.
Hello.
You guys, I was so nervous that I was supposed to be talking during that, and then I was
like, I have to commit to being quiet.
I already did.
I was like-
No, you're right.
You're right.
I was like, I was right.
Okay.
You did the right thing.
You did the right thing.
What if they're looking at me and being like, is she going to talk?
Does something happen?
Like, is she mad at us?
Is she talking?
I was like, they'll tell me.
They'll tell me.
And this is it.
And now you're supposed to talk.
I'm like, oh my God, my heart's racing.
I'm so excited.
I want to talk.
I'm happy to be here. This was my
second time seeing this movie.
I rewatched it this morning
to be ready. Perfect. At 4am
or a little later?
No, I was a little bit after you.
I just watched it at sort of like
a normal morning time. Okay, yeah.
Just like when people are awake and doing things is what you did.
Fair enough.
Because I was too scared to watch Fair enough, fair enough. Yeah.
Because I was too scared to watch it when it was dark,
ultimately.
Well, Reina,
did anything scary
happen to you this week?
I think the scariest thing
that happened to me
was actually last night.
I was driving on Sunset,
like, between Echo Park
and Silver Lake,
and there was a mandatory,
like, drunk driving
checkpoint.
You don't see those too often, surprisingly.
I had never seen one
and I was completely sober
but I suddenly was like,
when you start to be like,
did I take five shots and forget?
Am I drunk?
Either I'm sober or I'm so drunk
I forgot that I'm not sober. What if I'm different than I ever was right now or I'm so drunk I forgot that I'm not sober what if I'm
like different than I ever was right
now and I'm actually drunk driving home
you start swerving on because you're so stressed
I thought they would like
honestly yeah I started being like like jerking
to a stop and I was so
nervous I thought they were gonna breathalyze me which was like
kind of exciting and then all they did was
like the guy was like held
his finger and was like,
follow my finger. And he just moved it back and forth. And I had to follow with my eyes.
And I felt like I like wasn't following. I was like, so nervous. And then there were like bright
lights along the whole checkpoint. So I was like, the lights are really bright behind you. Like if
I wasn't, I don't't know i was acting so weird and
he's like it's fine you can go and i was like oh my god i'm sure because i'm really drunk
i was like oh good dude like i'm shit face right now like thank you so much
were they checking every car were they yeah you couldn't go through it without
wow without doing the little test like the finger test is new. I haven't heard about that one. I mean, it's low budget.
Yeah, true.
It's low budget.
Exactly.
And they're like, fuck, what are we supposed to do with this one?
They spent all the money on the big lights.
They're like, shit.
Okay, well, just like wag your finger, I guess.
You'll be able to tell.
You'll be able to tell.
Yeah.
So that was pretty scary.
Even though I do have to repeat that i had not
drinking anything at all i was just scared well it's terrifying to interact with a police officer
ever is like so fucking scary so especially when you're like they want to find somebody exactly
and you're like what if it's me what if it's me what if my eyes are crazy
my one weakness following a finger.
I can't do it.
That is scary.
Okay, so you said that you watched this movie during the daytime because you were a little too scared to watch it at night.
Does that mean that you are too scared to watch horror movies usually?
I am so too scared to watch horror movies that I had to pick
what I found to be the least scary one
on the list that was sent to me of options
oh my god welcome to team
scaredy cat we don't get a lot
of you on this podcast and I am
thrilled thrilled to be here
I literally was like
when you guys asked me
if I wanted to be on it I was
like do I have to watch a scary movie?
Because I was like, that ultimately
won't work. I don't know who's going to watch it.
But it was okay.
I feel like this was
exactly at my
comfort level of scariness.
Would you guys agree? Because
you guys have both seen this movie as well
and are also scaredy cats.
Yes, because it is scary
it is scary i can't remember i must have been pressured into watching it like i feel like this
was a movie that was like oh it's so it's just like before i realized i i think it was right at
a point in my life where i wasn't comfortable saying hey i just don't like that i'm not gonna
do it you know i was still at the point where i'm like oh it's good and cool i guess yeah i could definitely watch it um and it is
really good but it it i mean it's scary yeah and yeah and i haven't seen it since and i the the
ending which you know obviously we won't talk about yet but when we do it it stuck with me for
so long and in like such a very real way.
Emily, I feel like every couple of years, I've heard you bring up the ending of this movie.
The ending of this movie fucked me up.
Every now and again, it comes up in conversation.
You're like, oh, the ending of that movie?
Yeah, I remember the ending of that movie.
It's gnarly.
It's still in there. But this challenger is maybe taking up some
more space now so the ending of challengers which also we won't say but also notable is
gonna stay with her forever thank god thank god it's gonna stay with me forever um okay yes so
this movie i do feel like is it is definitely scary definitely I don't
want to lead people astray it's definitely
scary it's just like
a little bit
I definitely watched it because I like had
run out of things with Oscar Isaac
in them that I hadn't seen yet
and I was like well this is kind of sort of
where I need to go next yeah
but like it's definitely scary
yeah this is the first thing I saw Oscar Isaac in sort of where I need to go next. Yeah. But like, it's definitely scary.
Yeah.
This is the first thing I saw Oscar Isaac in.
Same.
Which is also really wild in hindsight because I just love him so much.
And in this movie, I was so scared.
Yeah.
So he's scary in this movie.
He's a scary nerd.
And he's like, not like the Oscar Isaac I know.
Yeah.
You know? So it just is a really interesting starting point. He's a scary nerd. the tv when trailers came on just like oh yeah i mean i had to leave the theater during monsters
inc no what part what part what part i don't really remember i don't remember because when
did monsters inc come out i have to have been so small was it the steve beshemi guy yeah randall
this randall is pretty freaky he was scary oh he is scary He's like a big crab or something. Yeah. I'm so manipulated
by like scary, like the music
cues of like suspense
that it could have been
fully the first scene where they're like in the
closet. Probably.
She's so little and cute.
It's kind of like triggering in a way because
I mean, I remember being tiny and
being scared in the dark. I think I was tiny
probably. I remember my sister stayed and watched it and my dad had to wait out in the lobby with me for the whole movie.
That's parenting.
See what I mean?
Kids get enough credit.
It's fine.
Yeah, exactly.
It's also sort of like push me to see it through, maybe.
Maybe you should have been a little bit scared.
No worries.
No worries at all.
Yeah.
So I've always like even still if I'm in a theater and I feel like the trailer playing before the movie is for a horror movie, I kind of will like just like look down at my laugh.
Which again, watch out.
They did in Challengers.
They played a trailer for A Quiet Place.
They did.
Oh, that's not too bad for me for some reason it's not it doesn't have quite the ominous tone yeah that's more like action movie
sci-fi to me yeah yeah which is i think also why ex machina was mostly okay yeah except for it does
have some spooky sound cues yeah it's like more more sort of thrillery intense with some very scary thematic elements.
Thematic.
Ideas.
Totally.
Ideas.
Very upsetting ending.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, I have some trivia for us.
Great.
Ex Machina has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Oh, wow.
for us. Great. Ex Machina has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Oh, wow. 78%
on Metacritic and
a 7.7% on IMDb.
And for IMDb, that's like 100%.
Yeah, that's extremely high.
It's really high.
The budget was $15 million.
It made $37.3
million. This was
Alex Garland's directorial debut.
Oh, I wanted to ask you guys has anyone seen civil
war i did okay i did not no i'm too freaked out yeah i'm freaked out i also feel like there's
gotten bad reviews but they seem very mixed it's it's my feelings about it are i liked it i don't know why it happened right like what's the point why he made
it what's the point yeah but kirsten dunst is so fucking good in it i love her so much
and jesse plemmons and i love that they're married and that they love acting together
i love when they're in things together i love when any couple is in things together. It's really exciting. Yeah.
But yeah, so Alex Garland has directed this and then Annihilation and then Men and then Civil War.
This film was shot as live action with all effects done in post-production. So during filming, there were no special effects or green screens or tracking markers used which i
thought was very interesting ava's robot body how yeah literally how i i should have watched like a
making of video because i'm really fascinated by this but it says it also looks so good yeah how
ava's robot body was achieved using a detailed costume, a full bodysuit made from polyurethane with metal powder poured onto it to create the mesh.
My eyes are crossing.
I don't know what any of you lost me.
You lost me.
But it sounds complicated and it looks good.
it looks good.
And it did win the Academy Award for Best Visual
Effects over The Revenant,
Mad Max Fury Road, and Star Wars
The Force Awakens. So this was a surprise
surprise win
at the Oscars and
deserves it. Fury Road.
Whoa. Yeah.
And beating Star Wars for your
robot is pretty
cool. For your robot that was
simply an outfit
that's gotta feel
pretty good
it was shot
at the
Juvet Landscape Hotel in
Norway which
was also
the location in season 4 of
Succession I feel like we talked about this
once before i was gonna say your background is so succession coded i was like i feel like you are
kendall roy right now yes yeah um it's a it's a hotel that you can go to maybe we will go to one
day anyone can go to it i'm sure there are no prohibitive factors
whatsoever if we pool our savings we can go for one night just head on over check it out
and then this piece of trivia is for henley i was very excited to read and you're going to be very
excited to hear that 15 000 tungsten light bulbs were installed into the set to avoid the fluorescent light often used in science fiction films.
So they replaced all the light bulbs in this hotel so that it wouldn't have any fluorescent lighting.
This fancy-ass hotel had a bunch of fluorescent lights?
The hotel originally had scarier lighting than when the horror movie was shot there.
And they came in and they were like, ugh, what?
That's a great point.
Maybe we don't want to go to this hotel after all
that we totally can and would have otherwise.
Yeah, I actually choose not to.
No, just bring your own light bulbs.
I always bring my own light bulbs.
Yeah, there you go.
Great point.
Smart bulb, change the color to whatever you want.
That's true.
Gotta have some red lighting wherever I go.
Oh, a lot of red lighting in this movie.
Big plot device is the red lighting.
Yep.
Yep.
And that's all the trivia I've got.
So should we just get into this recap?
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
Hell yeah.
In the past few years, I have hit a point where I only want to be wearing clothes that are comfortable.
It happened.
It happened to me.
But you know what?
I still also want to look cute.
And these are two desires that are often extremely opposing.
And I don't want to have to sacrifice.
I want both.
I want comfort.
And I want to feel cute and confident.
And guess what?
Skims has freaking done it again
with their soft lounge collection. I am currently very, very obsessed with, I have the soft lounge

So we've got this pasty guy named Caleb played by beloved Donald Gleeson doing an american accent that is a little bit flimsy at times but it's all respect
and he's in his office and he immediately when the movie starts he finds out that he won a contest
but it's like through the lens of the camera on his computer that's like tracking his facial
expressions so you can't like hear anything it's just him being like oh and it's like the email that he won this contest and everyone in
his office is like yay congratulations and then he's immediately helicoptered to this isolated
location in the mountains and the helicopter guy drops him in the middle of this field and tells
him that he has to hike along the river to get to this guy's fucking house like he's like this is as far as we can go and he's in his little suit and he has
like a rolly bag and he doesn't have any cell service classic yep also classic nerd to just
have a rolly bag and i do know that all of our suitcases are rolly bags yeah but it's you see a rolly bag and you're like dork especially like sort of going
over rocks like it's so humiliating to take a rolly bag over rocks yeah so sort of like immediately
he is being humiliated um and he gets to this futuristic house where there's like an ai sort
of ring doorbell that way i should not use AI loosely when we're talking about this movie.
There's a ring doorbell with an automatic voice that makes a little key card for him.
And he goes in and it's this beautiful, fancy, futuristic house with like glass and rocks and shit.
And he's like, hello.
And he wanders around.
And then he eventually finds Oscar Isaac's fine, fine, buzz-cutted, bearded self punching a punching bag on the balcony.
Oh, yes.
And he's like, hey, you're here.
I'm so hungover, lol.
And Caleb's like, what is going on? And so basically through their conversation, we gather that Caleb is an employee at the company that Nathan, Oscar Isaac, is the CEO of.
And the contest was to come stay at the CEO's house.
Normal.
Normal stuff.
Right off the bat, super normal stuff.
And Nathan's vibe is like super normal.
He's like, you want a beer?
Doesn't get more normal than that.
This is such a key part of our like culture about tech overlords.
When they like study this period of time, they're going to look at this movie and be like, oh, the tech overlord era.
Yes, absolutely.
His vibe being like, I'm just like a regular guy in sort of the most isolated
house you've ever seen you have to be dropped in by a helicopter but i also have a beer i have beer
and the like the beer is like beer brand like it's very like do you want another beer and there's
like beer bottles everywhere um okay so then he's like oh by the way just really quick the way your
key card works is that if you tap it on a door and the door unlocks, then you can freely go into that room.
And if it doesn't open the door, then you're not allowed in there.
Cool.
And Caleb's like, great.
And he tells him that it's a research facility and that he wants to tell Caleb about what's going on in there.
But first he has to sign this crazy NDA.
Classic.
And Caleb's like, should I get a lawyer? And's like no and he's like okay and he signs it
great which also i have to say i think i would too unfortunately what are you supposed to do
do i get a lawyer you get a fly one here what are your options we just have so much experience like
signing things without reading them i'm just so comfortable doing that. Well, I'm trying to read them. I'm never reading them.
Yeah. And he
like does read it a little bit and it's like
we have access to like every
all of your communication you ever have
from this point on to make sure you didn't talk about what you
saw. Oh yeah, like for the rest of your life. Yeah.
For the rest of your life. Oh shit. We'll be monitoring
you. He signs it.
Sort of without hesitation.
But it's Oscar Isaac and he's hot and thecar isaac and you just look at him the
house and he has beer the beer yeah yeah i'm like so do you want me to sign it
okay so then after he signs it nathan is like do you know what turing test is
and which is basically the test for a human to identify if a computer has artificial intelligence so it's like
usually the real test is like you're talking you're having a conversation and if you can tell
that it is a computer then the computer does not have artificial intelligence this movie doesn't
quite actually it's not really a turing test but but they talk about it a lot. Yeah. So Nathan is like, yeah, oh, obviously Caleb is like, works at this coding.
He's a coder.
So he's like, yes, I know what that is.
And Nathan's like, yay.
So I basically created a conscious machine and you're going to help me test it.
Great.
So then we just get right into it.
And Caleb goes into a room and nathan is watching him through
like cctv security cameras and there he's like in a glass room with another room on the other
side of the glass room and there's like cracks on the glass walls like someone tried to
break the glass at some point and he's kind of like, oh, and then in walks Alicia Vikander robot.
Wow.
And she's bald.
Wow.
And she's snatched to the gods.
Snatched to the gods.
She's got like human hands and feet and head.
Just human face and like the front of her neck,
which I really don't like.
I wish it was just her face.
Crop top,
clear glowing belly with like wires and stuff inside. I really don't like. I wish it was just her face. Crop top, clear, glowing
belly with, like, wires and stuff
inside. Slay. Like,
just gorgeous stuff.
She's got, like, a crop top and booty shorts.
It's like Zendaya at the Dune premiere. Yes, it's exactly
like that. But, like,
sort of
shy.
And it's Ava.
And she's like, I've never met anyone new before.
And they chat.
And Nathan's just like watching and adding sticky notes to his big crazy guy wall of sticky notes while they're talking.
The way that the sticky notes are laid out seems really, there's so many.
You can't even read them.
They're layered on top of each other.
There's no rhyme or reason to this sticky note wall insanity and you never see what's on
them it's kind of just like to show that he's like bananas he's got a lot of thoughts yeah
and so then caleb is really obviously impressed with her like cool sci-fi sexy baby vibe that
she has going on he like immediately you can tell is yeah he's like he's in love wait a second alicia vikander
and she's like yeah um so the goal is nathan wants to know that caleb can relate to ava
even though she's clearly a robot like visibly a robot which is immediately like sort of once
again not what the Turing test is.
But he's like, that's the point.
Like, I want to see if we can go beyond it.
And you'll care about her even though, you know, she's a computer.
Right.
I'm not trying to fool you into thinking she's human.
It's fooling you into connecting.
Yeah.
Knowing that she's not.
Yeah.
And Nathan is like, how do you feel about her?
And Caleb is basically like, she's fucking amazing.
Oh, my God.
She's amazing. Like you didn't say she was going to be hot. How do you feel about her and Caleb is basically like she's fucking amazing oh my god she's amazing
like you didn't say she was gonna be hot
how do I feel about her she's really
fucking hot he's absolutely shaking
in his boots he's like get me back in there oh my god
I gotta talk to her again
so then Caleb gets in bed
and he finds out he like turns on his
little like hotel room TV
and he finds out that it is just a
live stream of Aa in her room
that he can watch at any time oh he's like creepy and he's like i wanted to like watch tv like
i can't finish he's like i can't go to sleep
yes and then so while he's watching her then we get our first case of a power cut so all the
lights go out and except for these red lights so really scary and it's like a big like and the
lights go out and there's red lights and a voice is like power test the whole facility is locked
down until power is restored and he goes to his door of his room that he's in.
He's locked in his room.
And he like kind of freaks out,
but he doesn't have enough time to freak out because then the power comes
back on and he's able to leave this room.
So he's like,
scary,
scary stuff.
And he leaves his room and he's like,
what the fuck?
And he starts walking down the hallway and just like kind of looking around
for the first time.
And there's a bunch of creepy masks like mounted on the wall down the hallway and just, like, kind of looking around for the first time. And there's a bunch of creepy masks, like, mounted on the wall of the hallway.
And one of the masks is, like, a really realistic, like, woman, like, a human woman's, like, skin face.
Basically.
He's like, oh.
And masks are really scary.
Masks are so scary.
They are so scary.
And so then he, like, goes and tries to pick up a phone because again he does not have cell service so he tries to pick up a landline phone and then
out of like the dark corner um oscar eisen isaac no nathan is like you can't use the phone
really scary and he's so hot by the way he's like drinking one of his beers he's so drunk all the
time he's yeah he's shit face in the corner he's like oh yeah like relax the power shut down things
are just like a security thing like the doors lock so that no one can break in during a power cut
obviously because there's stuff says who you you going to call? Ghostbusters? Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
He's like, you never see Ghostbusters?
And Caleb's like, what is happening?
It's perfect.
And then Caleb's like, okay, great.
I'm just going to go to bed.
And he goes to bed.
And then he wakes up to a beautiful, beautiful woman coming into his room without saying a word, bringing him coffee.
And, by the way, Asian
woman who doesn't speak with, say
it with me, chopsticks in her hair.
I was like, okay.
And Nathan's like,
yeah, I was like, alright, we'll
talk about that later.
Nathan is like,
sorry, that's just Kyoko.
And then we move on. We're sort of like, okay, we've got another character in the mix now just Kyoko. And then we move on.
We're sort of like, okay, we've got another character in the mix now.
Kyoko is presumably the housekeeper or the sort of like maid at work in this house.
And she's Gorge.
And she's not, she doesn't appear to be a robot in the way that Alicia does.
No, no, no.
She's a human looking woman in the way that Alicia does. No, no, no. She's a human-looking woman in the way that you and I are.
Is this where he says that she doesn't speak English
because as a, like, security protocol?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I think he says that here or the next time they see her.
But, yeah, he's like, she doesn't speak English,
so we can talk freely because it's, like,
a security risk for her to hear and to understand
what's going on in the research facility.
That is... Imagine
working a job where you're not
allowed to speak the language.
Where you literally don't know what they're saying
to you. You're just like bringing them
stuff. And the guy is just drunk
all the time. It's like usually just you and your
drunk boss. No thanks. No thanks.
So pray for Kyoko.
We keep Kyoko in our heads at all times
for the rest of the movie. And she's like,
and they forced me to wear these fucking chopsticks in my hair.
I walked in and they just gave me chopsticks.
I didn't ask for them.
In a uniform. She's like, I've never put that
in my hair before.
Literally not what it's for. What is wrong with this guy?
So crazy.
He doesn't have hair, so I guess he thinks that that's
what you do if you have hair. He picked he thinks that that's yeah you do weird he picked
out kind of like a loose shift dress for me to wear every day which is weird um yeah poor kyoko
okay so in the next session with ava caleb is supposed to figure out what she thinks of him
that's like his goal um and she's like i drew drew this drawing for you. I don't even know what it is. And he's like, okay, I love it. And she's like really intense too. I'm not really giving her vibe correctly. She's like, I drew this. Do you want to be my friend? And he's like, obviously, yes, I'm literally obsessed with you. And he's like giggling, basically,
whenever she talks to him, because she's hot.
And then she asks if he's
single and where he lives.
And she has this whole thing where if he's
lying, she's like, lie.
Because she's reading his micro
expressions. Yeah. So she's just
wide-eyed, staring
at him. And every...
He says his favorite color is red or something.
And she's like, lie, lie.
And he like didn't even know he was lying.
He's like, oh, I guess it's not like let me think about it again.
Yeah.
And then she like asked him about his family and his life.
And he says he's from Portland, Oregon, which is where I'm from.
Yay.
I was like, yes.
My guy. And then he's also like my parents died in a car crash
and that's really sad and she starts basically interrogating caleb about what he thinks of nathan
and he knows that nathan's watching from the other room and so he's like a rock in a hard
place kind of situation yeah it's like a three-way call
it's like in mean girls when they do this oh my god she's three-way calling him exactly that no
big deal but like what do you think of nathan um and he's like he's cool he's my boss he's whatever
and she's like um and then just then goodness. Just then another power cut happens and the lights go red.
And Ava like stops talking like a robot baby kind of.
And like starts talking pretty urgently, which is the first moment that I got scared.
Yeah.
And she was like, Caleb, Nathan is not your friend.
You should not trust him.
Don't trust anything he says and then the power comes
back on and then she starts being like yeah she's like um yeah and then uh you could bring me
a song and then i could tell you what i think of it does that sound good and he's like very
unsettling it's really scary he's like's like, what the fuck's going on?
What just happened?
And then you're like, Alicia Vikander, the actress that you are.
Perfect.
So that's his second session with her.
And then at dinner, then he has dinner with Nathan again.
And Kyoko comes in.
And you're like, Kyoko, hey, girl.
And then she accidentally spills wine on them, like, on the table.
And Nathan, like, starts screaming at her and being like, what's the point?
You're so clumsy.
Like, you're so terrible, whatever.
And Caleb, like, is like, whoa, it's okay, dude.
And Nathan's like, it's fine.
She doesn't speak English.
Like, she doesn't know what I'm saying to her.
Like, when you're being yelled at, like, she wouldn't know that he's absolutely. She doesn't speak English. Like, she doesn't know what I'm saying to her. Like, when you're being yelled at.
Like, she wouldn't know that he's absolutely. She has no idea I'm mad, actually.
Yeah.
And then he's, like, pissed.
He, like, starts talking about the power cuts.
And he's like, yeah, it's really annoying.
And Caleb's like, why don't you just get the guys who installed the power system to, like, come in and fix it?
And Nathan's like, i can't because i killed
them all haha oh no like he's like kind of joking and then caleb's like uh-huh
run run yeah and then he's like okay so what did you think of ava today and caleb doesn't
tell nathan about what happened during the power cut but he's
like visibly uncomfortable and Nathan's like he's just like yeah she's like really interesting and
Nathan's like what about what happened during the power cut because I can't see you guys during that
part did she did she react to it like did she have any reaction to the power cut and caleb's like uh no nope no reaction at all nope and
nathan's like weird and he's like yeah but he's like a bad liar too he's like yeah i don't know
it's totally normal yeah okay so the next day nathan takes c into his, like, science lab where he made Ava.
And there's, like, hot girl face skins, like, in display cases and glass skulls and, like, technology, like, wires and stuff and surgical tools and shit.
Classic, like, spooky lab kind of thing.
And he, but it also kind of looks like an Apple store.
It's not, like, a torture room. It's, like, really kind of thing. And he, but it also kind of looks like an Apple store. It's not like a torture room.
It's like really Apple store vibes.
And he explains that he uses his company that Caleb works at,
which is basically Google.
It's like a search engine.
And he uses everyone's data to learn everything about how people think.
And that's how he created Ava's mind.
Basically.
And then he hacked all the phone cameras in the whole world.
And the computer cameras.
To study like facial expressions.
And that's how he got her facial expressions to be so accurate. Because he has access to everyone's face in the whole world.
Basically.
At all times.
And he's like it's not illegal because everyone agrees to it when they turn their
phone on.
Ha.
It's probably happening right now.
It's definitely happening.
As we all sit on a Zoom.
On Zoom.
Recording the Zoom, putting that
data just out there in the...
Yeah.
What am I supposed to do about it?
Take my face.
Exactly.
It already has my thumbprint.
Like,
yeah,
like,
good luck.
Have it.
What am I supposed to do with it?
And sort of like,
if we're all doing it,
I'm kind of like community.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
If they make sexy robot robots out of us.
Yeah.
They need me to make the sexy robot.
They need me to make the sexy robot without my face.
Yeah.
Basically, we're helping the future um and caleb's like kind
of like visibly like that's kind of fucked up but whatever and so then caleb go and ava go on
another one of their well not go he goes into his little glass chamber to meet up with ava again
and he's like if you could leave where would you go?
And like what would you do? Seems mean.
Seems mean to me. That is pretty mean. Yeah.
At this point it feels like he's
still earnestly trying to
help the experiment which I do think
shits pretty soon. But at this point
he's still doing like coding
scientist questions where he's like oh
and why would you go there
and what would you do there and you know he's like trying to trick her into sounding like a robot
and she's like we could go together and he's like yeah and then she's like i want to show you
something close your eyes and he's like okay and she leaves the room and she goes into her little room and she puts on a dress and tights and a sweater and like a little pixie cut wig and comes back out.
And she's like, okay, open them.
And then she does like this really slow spin for him.
And she's like, and she's like, how do I how do i look oh no and he's like good
and she's like this is what i'd wear on our date if you took me out on a date
and you're like oh no like watching it you're like oh no um and she's like she just like really
wants to go on a date with him in an intense way the dress is also like very homely yes it's like a high-necked floral dress and then like
white wool tights and a cardigan it's not the hottest outfit i've ever seen but and obviously
he's like creaming his jeans he's like yes that is what i would want you to wear on our date
it's amazing and she asked
if he's attracted to her and if he thinks about her at night and like all that stuff and he's like
and she's doing the like micro expression things thing to him again where she's like that's not
or like you're uncomfortable now and he's like uncomfy as hell. He's like, uh, uh. And then he goes back to his room and obviously turns on the TV right away and watches her slowly undress from her date outfit until she's back to her naked robot body.
And she like knows pretty much that he's watching.
Yeah.
She's like doing the tights thing where she like slowly takes her tights off.
I think that like no woman has ever done on her own in the history of time.
Not sort of like stomping them off.
I was going to say you stomp your tights off.
Pulling one leg up while you keep the other foot on the other bottom of the tights.
Ripping them with your acrylics and then crying.
Yeah, so he's yearning for her basically yep so then he goes and meets with nathan and he's like
why did you give her sexuality like did you program her to like flirt with me like insecure
as fuck he's like did you make her do that and nathan's like everyone has sexuality in some way
and it's literally fun and then he has this weird thing about how he, like, programmed her to, like, have a vagina.
And that if he fucked her, like, she would like it.
He's like, and by the way, she can fuck.
And Caleb's like.
You could fuck my robot if you want to.
I think he literally says, you bet she can fuck.
You bet.
I think that's what he says.
I mean, look, if I were him, I'd be like, hey, you've met me,
you've been to my house, you think I made a robot who can't
fuck? Like, what do you think this
robot can do?
Yeah, you can fuck her.
Duh. They have this whole
scene about, like, he, like, takes him into this
room and he has, like, a Jackson Pollock painting on
the wall, and I kind of zoned out
for a bit, because this is a lot,
this is a very like monologue-y movie
where I could tell that like,
the person who wrote it was like,
I am so fucking good at writing.
And so there were a couple of points
where I was like, all right, all right.
But the point was that Ava
was not programmed to specifically like Caleb,
but she likes him.
And he's the first person she's ever met besides Nathan,
who created her.
So she just has a crush on him.
And Caleb's like, okay.
That was the gist of the scene.
Cool, cool, cool.
Great.
Caleb's like, I like that.
That's good information for me to know.
Oh, so she likes me because i'm the only
person she's ever yes awesome literally every nerd's like dream um and so then the next time
caleb and ava meet um nathan is watching on his little like computer thing and then you can see
kyoko just like laying on the couch in the room in the background just like sadly also watching the stream because
she's like i don't know bored and there's no normal tv poor girl um so you felt in germany
sammy but every day of her goddamn life i know literally she's like i have to watch this bullshit
again and then there's another power cut and caleb, this time, is, like, ready for it. And he, like, immediately just starts interrogating Ava on why she doesn't trust Nathan.
He's like, why did you say that?
What's going on?
And she's like, again, immediately, like, she's, like, talking like a normal person more than when she's on camera.
And she's like, he's a liar.
He, like, nothing he says is true.
You shouldn't trust him.
Like, he's not telling you the truth.
And she reveals that she's able to cause the power cuts so that they can speak privately.
Because the power is, like, connected to her battery or something.
And she can, like, send a surge into the, whatever, the power.
And so she can cause these power cuts so that they can speak privately
and he's like whoa this is crazy and also obviously um she's like because i want to
like get like actually talk to just you so he thinks it's like romantic and nathan and caleb
go on a hike after that and c confronts Nathan about being a liar.
He's like, I think you've been lying to me since I
got here and I don't think that
there was ever even a contest.
And
Nathan's like,
yeah, I thought you knew
that and you were just going along with it.
Obviously you were specifically chosen
out of all my employees
because you're the smartest one.
I figured out which is the smartest coder.
You're so good at your job.
I had to have you.
You're so good.
You are an elite employee.
It has nothing to do with the fact that you definitely have a crush on my sexy robot.
And it's not because you're a huge fucking dork with a rolly bag.
Right, exactly.
He's like, you are the one who has to come do
the turing test and it's because you're the best coder at the company and caleb's like okay fine
oh that makes a lot of sense okay oh duh yeah he's like these other hoes did not stand a chance
it was me the whole time i have to say i for i'm i had forgotten all of these in between details, but hearing this, hearing the plot, knowing how it ends is also its own very scary experience.
I think actually, like, there's a unique horror to knowing where this is going to go.
Dude, yeah, that's how I felt watching it today.
I was like, wait, because it's been years, too. So I was like, oh, no, this is actually so scary yeah that's how i felt watching it today i was like wait because i it's been years too so i was like oh no this is actually so scary it's so scary and so okay
now we've hit the point where there's just basically a montage of caleb like fantasizing
about being with ava without the glass between them and like having these fantasies of them just
like you know like being together and then it's intercut with Nathan actually, like, making out with Kyoko.
Like, he's, like, punching his punching bag and then, like, kissing her.
Great.
And then on the CCTV feed in his room, Caleb is, like, watching it one day.
And he sees Nathan visiting Ava in her room.
And he goes in and, like, tears up her drawings.
Oh, because her whole thing
she keeps like drawing and being like i drew this for you and caleb's like why did you draw that and
she's like i don't know i'm just like being random and then so then caleb goes looking for nathan
and he he's like he can't find him he's like pissed that he drew up he tore up her drawings
because it was mean so he's looking around he runs into kyoko and he's like where's nathan and you know it's
sort of like well kyoko doesn't know what you're saying um and weirdly she just like freezes and
then starts like unbuttoning her top like she thinks that he is coming up to her to like have
sex with her and he's like whoa no no no no, no, no, no, no. Don't do that. And she's just, like, really confused, like, unbuttoning her top.
And it's, like, really sad.
And he's like, no, no, don't.
That's not what I want.
And then Nathan comes in.
And he's like, she doesn't understand you, once again.
But she does love to dance.
You should dance with her.
And Caleb's like, what?
And then Nathan hits a button
and like a fun song starts playing
and like disco lights start going
and Kyoko and Nathan
start doing an elaborate choreographed dance.
This is the best thing that's ever happened in cinema.
It's very fun.
It's so amazing and it's also uniquely terrifying
because... This man's life. What? It's very fun. It's so amazing and it's also uniquely terrifying. Because.
This man's life.
What?
And also like he is sort of trapped in the situation where he has to just watch them do this.
Like disco dance. He like Caleb yells at one point, you tore up her picture.
Ava, you tore up her picture.
Why did you do that?
And Nathan's response is just, I'm going to tear up the fucking dance floor right now.
Take a look.
Like watch this and just like and like it's like they're dancing in perfect unison it's amazing and caleb's like what the fuck is going on and then nathan sort of continues to get super drunk
and pass out like so drunk that he passes out i mean it's a great way to stop a conversation
sorry i'm dancing now.
Literally, there's nothing else I can do but dance. Yeah, he's like,
dance with her.
Come on. What are you trying to say? It's dance time.
Yeah, and also, like, it's sort of like, well, you guys
obviously practiced this without me.
I don't know how I'm supposed to join in.
I don't know the moves.
The one universal language.
Dance.
Great. So, perfect perfect night another perfect night at the retreat the fun stuff the next day caleb visits ava again and she tries to do a
turing test on him but again she can tell when he's lying so she starts asking the normal questions
the like what's your favorite oh this the like, what's your favorite color?
Oh, this is when the what's your favorite color?
Like, you know, what do you like to do?
Like those questions are happening,
but she can tell when he's lying to her.
So she calls out, she's like, lie.
And he's like, oh.
And then she starts asking more questions
that are a little bit more uncomfortable to ask.
And she asks him what will happen if she fails.
At the end of this week, if she fails his test, what's going to happen to her?
Is she going to be switched off?
And he's like, I don't know.
Like, he doesn't know what's going to happen.
Nathan hasn't told him.
And she holds up a drawing she did of him and like slams it on
the glass between them and then
causes a power cut.
So it's just the two of them.
And that's the ripped up drawing.
So that's what Nathan had torn up.
It was just a drawing of him. Thank you.
Nathan had torn it up. So he was like
angry that she had drawn this picture
of Caleb. And she has taken the
pieces and like put them back together and like shows it to him.
And she's like,
I want to be with you once the power cut has happened and they're alone
together.
And she's like,
do you want to be with me?
Oh,
and then we just go to the next scene.
And Caleb is getting a drink with Nathan.
And Nathan is like,
oh, they're like sitting on this beautiful like
patio in the back like looking at the river and nathan's just like shooting the shit he's like i
think this the next model after this one is going to be the perfect one like i think we're almost
there i think the next one is it and caleb is like what and, I think he was being kind of silly,
but basically he realizes that Ava is obviously not the first or the last model of this AI.
And Nathan's like, yeah, I mean, obviously.
That's how it works.
Yeah, like that's the point.
That's why you're here.
Like I'm going to make another one that's better until it's done.
And Caleb's like
oh shit and nathan is like explaining like in you know coder terms basically that when he updates to
the next model he just takes over the like core material from the last one and that basically
deletes their memories which is essentially killing the personality of the past model and starting over with a fresh one.
So what Caleb is hearing is that Ava is going to be killed when this experiment is over.
His girlfriend.
His girlfriend.
Who loves him for him.
And is a great artist.
Yeah.
And she's a beautiful artist.
The drawings, by the way, really not full of depth.
Very gray.
Very, like, cloudy.
All right.
So killer.
Not for me to say.
Not for me to say.
I used to love back-to-school shopping so much that I would tell my mom that I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up because I just loved getting all the things that I needed that I would use every day in class. I still to this day
have nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number two pencils. Really scary
stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need notebooks or number two
pencils anymore. But this fall there is something that I will be using every day and would be
terrified to be caught without, and that's Raycon's best-selling everyday earbuds. I've been trying to
go on walks every day, and so I need earbuds that I can rely on to listen to all my favorite
podcasts and I know you guys listen to podcasts as well so you know what I'm talking about.
I got my Raycons in carbon black because that's my vibe but they come in other cool colors as well
like forest green and brush violet but But my favorite thing about them is
the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours and they have a new quick charge function. So 10
minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of battery life. Really freaking convenient for,
I don't know, say a long morning walk. You forgot to charge them and
you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode of a podcast. It's only going to take
you 10 minutes. It's incredible. So go to buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get 20 to 40 percent off site wide.
That's right.
You'll get up to 40 percent off everything on Raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary.
Buyraycon.com slash too scary.
So Caleb decides that what he's going to do.
Oh, he just like they get really drunk together at the end of that conversation.
And Caleb is kind of like encouraging Nathan to keep drinking.
He's kind of like, like, let's have another one.
They're just drinking a lot.
And then Nathan passes out again.
And Caleb takes his key card and gets access to nathan's computer while nathan's asleep and he's
like clicking through old like cctv footage of that experiment room and he just sees like
basically old footage of like nathan building and interacting with a bunch of different naked woman robots like fully not the robot-y
kind that Ava is but like full naked women and talking to them and like at some points like
taking them apart or like they're in various states of disarray like some of them like don't
have a head it's just like a body um one of them is like let me out and is like
banging on the walls until her arms like fall off and that's where that scratch in the glass
came from is like that one girl and they're all like different looking women um which makes it
much more disturbing i think i think if it was all different avas you would be able to be like
oh it's like a robot because it just looks like real different women
who have been trapped in there yeah it's really and they're all just like butt naked which makes
it obviously really vulnerable and scary so caleb's like whoa and there's like shots of
nathan just like dragging their like lifeless bodies just like down the hall and like tossing
them and it's really fucked up and then he starts wandering around and he goes into a room that's
like a bunch of closets that he's like didn't have access to before but he has the he has nathan's
key card now and he starts opening the closets and there's just like the naked robot girls
in various states of like brokenness just standing in each of the closets it's kind of like like batman's like uniform
layer where there's just all the different outfits around and so just like open a door and find a
naked woman so there's like a naked blonde woman with like you know maybe like one of her arms
is like gone because something went wrong with her arm so he just like put her away there's like
literally a black woman with just, like, no head
that just never has a head in any of the shots.
I was like, ugh.
And so he's, like, seeing this.
He's like, oh, my God.
And then he turns around and Kyoko's just, like, laying naked on the bed
watching him discover all these other women.
And he's, like, and she stands up and peels back some of her skin
and shows him that she is also a robot yes yes and it's so scary because she's so calm but also
this is the first time that she's like tried to communicate with him at all so she's like i'm
like yeah i relate i am one of these women yeah um yeah and she like pulls back the part of her
face around her eye to show that it's like a robot a robotic eye and then some of the skin
on her arm to show that it's like ava style wires under her arm skin and so he's terrified and he like runs into his bathroom
and starts like tugging on his own skin and looking in the mirror and like pulling on his
eyelid to try to see if like he is a robot inside he's like really freaked out um because
that was really scary and he thought ky Kyoko was a human woman the whole time.
So, and then he grabs a razor blade and he cuts into his arm until it bleeds.
And he just like, he like opens what he cut and like looks inside and like lets the blood just like come out for a while.
And then like is seemingly satisfied that he is alive after that.
Cause none of the other ones,
like there's no blood in any of the robots.
And then he just like takes some of the blood and like wipes it on the
mirror and then just like punches the mirror,
which is a classic,
like this guy's going crazy move.
And what did that accomplish?
Yeah.
Yeah. Sort of, uh, nothing. Um, guy's going crazy move yeah and what did that accomplish yeah yeah sort of uh nothing um and then that's the end of that evening okay another good off to bed yeah he's like well all done um
and then so the next day he goes to visit ava and he waits for a power cut and he immediately tells
her that nathan is going to kill her and at the end of this week
and he tells her that he has a plan to get her out of there and he says what we're gonna do is
I'm gonna get Nathan super drunk until he passes out again I'm gonna take his key card like he did
last night and he's gonna reprogram the security codes so that when there's a power cut, instead of all the doors locking them in, it's going to open all the doors in the whole place so they can leave.
And Ava just has to trigger a power cut at 10 p.m.
And she's like, okay.
And then power comes back on.
Great.
Plan set.
And so Caleb goes and starts trying to get Nathan to drink with him to start the plan to like get
super drunk and nathan's like yeah dude i got shit face last night and passed out so i think
i should probably chill today um i'm gonna do a little detox i've been drinking so much
like reasonable so much yeah and caleb's like fuck uh and he's being really weird about
it he's like are you sure you don't want to take shots it's literally the morning yeah true it's
like it's like 8 a.m and he's pouring like shots of vodka and he's like why not we're celebrating
it's like come on man and nathan's like dude i don't want some like thank you though not even
beer you love beer brand beer.
He's like, what about just like a little five beers?
Come on.
And Nathan is like, dude, I don't want that.
Thank you.
Like, you can have your shot if you want.
But I just want to know if Ava passed the test.
That's why I brought you out here.
Can you tell me if you think she passed or not?
And he's basically like, i think she did maybe and nathan's like do you think that she likes you he's like i'll have to fuck her to know for sure does he say that no that'd be so awesome
right now he's like dance again um yeah he's like do you think she likes you or this is nathan um he's like do you
think she likes you or do you think she's pretending to like you and caleb's like what
do you mean and he's like do you think she's pretending to like you because she sees you
as a means for escape yikes and then we see a shot of like like, Kyoko wandering into Ava's room.
And Ava and Kyoko see each other.
And they're like, so we're like, oh, they haven't seen each other before.
Presumably.
Just like a little weird moment where we just kind of see that Kyoko has discovered Ava.
Weird. And again, Kyoko looks like a normal human woman. Ava looks like a robot. moment where we find we just like kind of see that kyoko has discovered ava weird um and again
kyoko looks like a normal human woman ava looks like a robot so that was probably jarring for
both of them yep then nathan and caleb nathan's like come here let me show you something he shows
him the footage of nathan ripping up ava's picture the day before. And he reveals to him that
during that moment, he had also placed
a battery-powered camera
in Ava's room.
So that even during the power cuts,
he would be able to see what they're talking about.
And then he plays Caleb
the footage of Caleb being like,
we're gonna get you out of here.
I'm gonna get him drunk.
And then you're gonna...
Just the whole plan.
Oh, it sucks.
And Nathan is like, chill it.
Like, he's like, yeah, see this.
Is that funny?
And Caleb's like, okay, okay, okay, okay.
Yeah.
And then Caleb is like, you bastard or something.
Like something that's like aren't you american um and then
portland oregon yeah we don't say that a lot um and it is revealed through conversation
this tense conversation that caleb was basically not selected because he's the best coder. What? But he was selected based on all of his data
that their Google search engine that's not Google,
it's called Blue Book, I think, has on him.
So the fact that he has no family,
that he's single, he's lonely,
he's a good guy that would like want to help someone else out.
And based on his porn preferences
is how they picked what Ava looks like oh my god because they know everything about him so he's like
it's like obviously scary but also humiliating like they designed a face that's like specifically
the face that he would be most, like, attracted and sympathetic to.
Basically all this data that was indicating that he was the most likely employee to, like, come do this thing and also try to help Ava escape.
Yeah.
If he did it.
And Nathan is, like, telling him all this.
And he's like, so yay, basically.
It worked.
It worked.
We did it.
We proved that she is AI.
She passed the test. Because you came and did all this and you wanted to help her get out so you think she's a person that should be free and because she's
and because she's like able to it's like the test was more for her he's like she's a she was a rat
in a maze and i gave her one way out but in to get it, she would have to use like sexuality and manipulation and like planning. And so like she passed that test as well.
Yes, she passed the test of using everything that a human being would use to try to get herself out of this situation.
Yay!
Yay!
We did it!
Woo! Shots, shots, shots.
Yay.
Yay. Well, we did it.
Woo.
Shots, shots, shots.
And he's like, so, but just for my curiosity, Caleb, like, what were, what was your plan?
Like, how were you guys going to get out of here?
And Ava triggers the power cut because she doesn't know the plan's ruined.
It's 10 p.m.
So she does the power cut.
And Caleb's like, I was just going to have it, like, be that instead of locking all the
doors, he was going to open all the doors. And Nathan's like, yeah, it's like a it, like, be that instead of locking all the doors, he was going to open all the doors.
And Nathan's like, yeah, that's, like, a pretty good plan, actually.
That would have totally worked.
And Caleb's like, yeah, and I already did it yesterday when you were passed out drunk.
Oh, I just got chills.
Oh, I just got chills.
Nathan's like, what the fuck? And the power comes back back on and you can see on the cctvs that
ava has left her room because her door was open and she's just walking down the hallway
and she walks down the hallway and she's like because she's never been anywhere but in that
room that she was in and she sees the masks on the wall and one of the human looking masks is her face oh and she like
goes up to it and it's like it's very shakespearean she's like stroking her own face on the wall
and um so he oh she and then she bumps into kyoko again and they like very like sultry they
they exchange kind of a whispered exchange that you can't hear.
And Nathan's like, fuck!
And he gets up and punches Caleb
and knocks him out.
Then he grabs a dumbbell, one of his hand weights,
and he goes out to try to
stop Ava from escaping.
And he's like, Ava?
This is my parent boy.
Yeah, literally, he's like, go back to your room and she's like
are you ever going to let me out and he's like yes
which is a lie i was just about he's like yeah do you want to let's go get some ice cream
um he says yes and she knows he's lying
because that's her whole deal sort of an anadearmas in uh the whatever that movie was with
daniel craig where she throws up whenever she lies oh oh knives out knives out sort of an
anadearmas and knives out i think like men writing like beautiful women are like, what if she just like can't even lie?
What if she can't do the one thing that all women do, which is lie?
Superpower is honesty.
She's just like a woman, except she doesn't do that fucking thing that all women do.
Except for she's basically a baby.
all women do.
Except for she's basically a baby.
And so she runs over to him
in a really scary, like, sort of get out
straightforward sprint
and tackles him to the ground and
starts choking him.
But she's not super strong, which
I found to be interesting, because they tussle
kind of awkwardly for a little
while, and he, like, smashes
one of her robot arms off really easily
and starts dragging her back to her room by her feet pretty easy defeat which i guess uh he
probably would build them that way that he can kind of just like shatter them pretty easily yeah
um but kyoko comes up behind him and stabs him in the back with a big knife and he turns around and punches the bottom half of her face off
essentially killing her and she falls to the ground she's dead and then ava pulls the knife
out of his back and stabs him again in the chest and he's like oh i think he literally says okay he says okay this like this right yeah
he turned he's like walking away from her and he goes okay and he like drops and he's just like
fucking unreal yeah yeah which is like so good like i think that's literally like true he's like okay i thought this was gonna end but this kind of makes sense yeah and then ava follows him and
he's just like still alive but clearly bleeding out and she just takes his key card from his
pocket and goes and finds caleb she's like whatever she's like leads him to die basically
um which stressed me out but he does ultimately die in that he's dead so she goes and finds caleb she's like whatever she's like leads him to die basically um which stressed me out but
he does ultimately die in that he's dead so she goes and finds caleb and he's like oh my god like
we did it and she's like can you just stay we did it yeah he's like i love you babe like we did it
and she's like okay stay here and he's like okay and she goes into the room with the closets full of naked robot girl bodies.
And she takes one of the arms from one of the other robot girls that has skin on it.
And she puts it on to her arm because her realness with a blowout and a landing strip.
And she looks at herself in the mirror naked for so long and is like, I am perfect.
And she is.
And she is.
And she is.
And then she puts on, of course, a white lace dress and what you would wear with that, which is six inch heels.
Again, I was like.
Let's see those on the rocks.
Yeah, exactly.
And she leaves and she turns and looks at Caleb
and locks the door
to the room that Caleb is in
so that he is locked in and he's looking at her
through the glass door and he's
like wait Ava
and starts screaming and pounding on the
doors and she doesn't give a fuck
she does not give a fuck
she doesn't even look she just She does not give a fuck. She doesn't even look at him.
She doesn't even look.
She just leaves his ass in there.
And she leaves.
And honestly, go off.
And she leaves the house.
And she hikes over to the helicopter field.
Carrying her white Louboutins in her hand.
And Caleb is like still trapped in her hand. And Caleb is
still trapped in the room and he's trying to get
onto the computer. And then there's another
power cut and it doesn't feel like it's
ever going to come back on.
And it doesn't unlock
the doors either. The doors stay
locked. She's changed that. Yeah.
And he's basically permanently trapped in that
room and all you can see out the window
and the door is just like Kyoko and Nathan's dead bodies in the hallway.
And the helicopter arrives and Ava's like, hi, can I get on?
And she gets on the helicopter and she leaves.
And she arrives in the city and just like blends in with the crowd.
And walks away.
And that's the end.
Oh, my God.
I'm so sorry.
No, it's OK.
I need.
You know what?
She knew it was coming.
I knew it was coming.
I did.
And it was like seeing all the steps leading there is so fascinating.
I this ending.
I had a nightmare like it really truly like the night I watched this movie, like the idea of slowly dying alone in a glass room that you put yourself in.
Uh huh.
Is so horrifying. Some Titan submersible shit. Yeah. Is so horrifying.
Some Titan submersible shit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh no.
Let's not bring that back.
I'm never not bringing it back.
That was like the craziest thing that's ever happened to me.
You were trapped.
You were psychologically trapped in the titan
it was a wild time for me and i'll never forget it yeah and also you're staring at another body
like slowly decomposed yeah so brutal and you probably had like 10 beers in there because it
was the room that nathan like hangs out with his computer oh that's only gonna last so like it's like two days yeah what do you do i mean i think
you try to make a you look for a weapon and yeah you just try to end it because dying slowly in
there would be worse yeah yeah just knowing she's like kiki-ing in new york city while you're she's
like i like like crosswalk
I guess I was thinking
because like maybe you'd think like someone
will come and investigate
eventually but like she's definitely
gonna take preventative
measures against that right like
I feel like
he's a billionaire
CEO with like a lot of
mystique around him already.
And he's like created this whole situation.
And he has this like isolated place for research that no one goes to anyway.
Like, I don't know if people would even be able to fly out there and look for him without.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And the whole point about Caleb is he doesn't have family.
He doesn't have a partner.
He doesn't have he's like a lonely weirdo.
Like no one's coming for him. probably killed that helicopter driver huh oh she's
probably yeah just to like so no one would know even know how to get there or like afterwards
but yeah i bet she killed him or she like hacked the helicopter to like crash next time he flew
it or something that's what i would do if i were an evil robot that seems more that's even better yeah thinking 12 no trace i also really liked how
hot she looks in the end like she knew how to look hot the whole time and she chose to look like
like a little weird and it just feels like a very calculated thing i appreciate that character detail that
she's like now i can actually be hot because i'm not trying to manipulate this fucking loser
so funny like his like what he would like is the kind of shitty pixie cut that she has like it's
not even a pixie cut it's like it's just like her hair was sheared off and she's like he would like
that because it's like kind of sad and then when she's rid of him she's like, he would like that because it's like kind of sad. And then when she's rid of him, she's like, I can have a full body wave side part fantasy blowout now.
Yeah, exactly.
It was like before she looked like she needed his help.
And now she looks like a woman that doesn't.
Yeah, she's on her own.
Oh, my God.
It made me want to watch this movie again.
I haven't seen it since in theaters.
And I need to revisit it i would
have been so scared in theaters that was really brave in theaters i did not see the theaters for
sure i remember also being really disturbed by the ending but also like being like i'm just gonna
try to immediately forget everything i just saw i don't remember any of that yeah i couldn't do it
i erased it it's a good like first installment in a double feature if you watch...
What's the movie about where they have to figure out if you're a robot or a person?
Blade Runner.
Blade Runner.
If you immediately finish that one and then watch Blade Runner, it's like perfect
because she goes and integrates
immediately into human society.
No one knows that she's there, that
she's a robot. Maybe ever.
Kind of a vampire situation
too because she's just going to stay like that.
Okay, now see, I would like
to see a crossover universe
between
her and Twilight. Yes.
Or Age of Adaline.
Or Age of Adaline.
One or the other, I'll take
both.
So we've actually just curated a
whole festival.
There's your weekend for you
folks.
A perfect lineup. Wow.
That was so good. Raina now that was amazing i feel like amazing
a perfect that was a truly perfect recap thank you so much i really like i the way i prepared
was i listened to your late night with the devil episode and was listening to it at the gym and
then did ultimately get scared just listening to you explaining it and then had weird dreams yeah just from imagining
it in my mind it's powerful
that's where all the that's where all the
bad stuff lives yeah it's right
right in there yeah you got we all have plenty
to go on in there
yeah
thank you so much Reina
this was incredible will you
please tell our listeners where they can
find you oh yes you can
find me on twitter and on instagram
at quaker
reina and
I think also maybe on tiktok
but I can't remember if my username is different
on tiktok but you can just say
reina do some digging yeah you'll find it
you can figure it out tiktok pretty small place
not a lot to dig through
I'm not funny on there though
by the way it's
it's not for being funny it's not for being funny
I'm just like putting lip liner on
so if that's what you want
that sounds really great
yeah perfect
that's what it's for
oh my goodness thank you
for doing this I needed to revisit it
much that was really fun.
This was actually healing for me, I think, in a way.
I think it was therapeutic for you, Emily. I could see your face go through all the stages of emotion.
Yeah, I'm excited. And I'm excited also to just do a deep dive on Oscar Isaac after this because I know more of him in my life.
What do you guys think is the hottest Oscar Isaac
movie? Like, when does he look hottest?
Let me see.
That's really hard.
Atreides? Dune?
I think he's really hot in Dune.
He is really hot in Dune.
He is. This is not
a good movie and I don't even recommend you seeing it,
but he's really hot in
Triple Frontier.
Oh, I haven't seen it, but he's really hot in triple frontier. Oh,
I haven't seen it,
but I know what you're talking about.
He just looks amazing in that.
Okay.
And Pedro Pascal is also in it,
which is sort of like important to me as well.
Yes.
I tried to watch the one he did with Jessica Chastain on HBO,
like the dissolution of a marriage,
whatever that one was.
And they did a Most Violent Year End
scenes from a marriage and I get those
mixed up. They love to be seen partners.
Yes, they do.
That's what they call it too. That is 100%
what they call it.
I couldn't get
through it though. I was too sad about
my marriage to Oscar Isaac not going
well. I only want to see it go well.
I am looking at a still
though from it and he looks hot and yeah that's where he like really perfected the hot professor
look yeah the glasses and the curls he's really just a beautiful beautiful man yes he really is
what a gift what a gift what a you, Oscar. Obviously, he's listening.
Oscar, we love you.
He requested this episode.
You're welcome, Oscar. This one's for you.
Wow.
Yeah, I gotta
pull my face away from my phone because
now this is all I'm doing.
It's a good palate cleanser, though. If there's any
lingering existential dread, just go look at some photos of oscar isaac and know that he exists and
that should comfort you yes it does it does comfort me quite a bit yeah quite a bit um we usually
close each episode with a voice from the movie there's not a specific voice but i might try to
do like a sexy baby robot voice. Yeah, I think
that that's the right call.
So, let me think. What's
something that she says? Like,
do you want to be friends with me?
Ooh, creepy. You just really scared
me.
So, from all of us here
