Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Podcast. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch. Hi everyone, welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily, and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Henley, and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy, and I love watching scary movies, and so I watch them so that you don't have to. And I'm very excited to talk about today's movie. And if you are so excited that you can't wait one single
Starting point is 00:00:46 second you can check out the time stamps in our episode description because first we've got a little bit of haunted housekeeping the smallest little bit which is that okay we i just wanted to say a quick congratulations to robert pattinson for becoming a hot dad oh my gosh he's a hot dad it's officially a hot exciting huge huge huge it's really huge for for the whole community um really exciting stuff do we get it do we have a name on that baby i was about to ask the same thing i don't think so i don't think we have a name i don't know if we're we'll find out soon enough yeah i mean i they're pretty private folks but we'll we'll watch this space we'll keep you updated watch this space as soon as we hear.
Starting point is 00:01:26 You better believe. We better believe we're going to let you know. Okay, now that that extremely important piece of news is out of the way. Yeah, that was huge. That was going to be the elephant in the room the whole time. It's like, is she going to bring it?
Starting point is 00:01:40 Yeah. We got it. We got it out there. Oh boy boy did anything scary happen to you guys this week i i like broke my brain yesterday because i listened to cowboy carter too much it's so good wait i'm so glad you got brought up cowboy carter so good. But you guys know that I don't listen to music and I do most things in silence. But I was so obsessed with Cowboy Carter. So today is Sunday. Cowboy Carter came out on Friday. Right?
Starting point is 00:02:15 It's only been since Friday. Or Thursday? I feel like I know all the songs. So I know. Well, so this is Beyonce's album, correct? Yes. Yes. I'm sorry. This is Beyonce's album. I have not listened yet. Well, so this is Beyonce's album, correct? Yes. Yes. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:02:25 This is Beyonce's album. I have not listened yet. Great. Well, OK. It's crazy that I listen to music. You know this. You know this. This is crazy.
Starting point is 00:02:31 But I listen to it. And I so I listen to it in my headphones all day on Friday when it came out. And I loved it so much. I just kept I kept listening. Then I got home from work and Joel, I was like, Joel, did you listen to Cowboy Carter? And he was like, yeah, it's so good. And we like put it on while we were just hanging out at home and then on saturday we had to drive around a bunch we ended up driving all over town and i kept i kept listening to it and saturday night rolls around and joel has it
Starting point is 00:03:01 playing on our speakers we're getting ready to go somewhere and I was like I think I'm about to have a breakdown like I felt this like like like I just I got like oh like overstimulated from Cowboy Carter like I was like because I realized I hadn't sat in silence in like 48 hours and I I I just got overstimulated I just I really I really like, and I'm like, I feel like I'm like detoxing. It's so good. I recommend everybody listen, but like you can overdo it. I'm just saying like. Pace yourselves. Pace yourself.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Pace yourself. Because it's also like, it's a lot. Like it's a lot of album. Take breaks. And it's doing a lot. It's doing so much. I just need to like sit quietly for a while. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:03:45 You can't listen to that all the time. It's too much. But, oh, it's really good though. It's really good. And I've been listening to it with Silas, who, if anyone doesn't know, Silas is two and a half years old. And he fucking loves Beyonce. He's like, calls her Yonce. Because now I know. Oh, very cool. Like it's like, because that's what a two-year- like, calls her Yonce because now I know. It's like,
Starting point is 00:04:06 because that's what a two-year-old can say is Yonce. So he's like, Yonce, listen, Yonce. And then he dances and he dances like an old man. He puts his arms out in front of him and then kind of just like shakes his torso back and forth. And we've been listening to it a lot in this household and huge fans over here but i completely understand you gotta you can't you gotta have silence too you can't be all the time have silence it really made it real i like was really i yeah i'm still i'm still kind of there you might be able to tell i'm still kind of there right i'm nervous i'm nervous to listen you're scaring me you should be it's a lot um it's very good but man take pace yourself pace yourself yeah don't smoke the whole
Starting point is 00:04:54 pack you know so anyway that's where that's where i'm at mentally. Yeah. It's too much music. That is scary, honestly. Yeah. Henley? Yeah. Okay. So my scary thing is that I started a sub stack, which you guys know, it's called Endless Amounts. And I- It's so good, Hen.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Oh, thank you. It's so good. good. It's my like, foray into trying to do something with the very limited amount of free time that I have. And I have been, you know, I've published three of them now published, I've put three of them up. The thing that's scary about it is that people who I didn't really anticipate reading it, have read it. And that's scary. Do you know anticipate reading it have read it and that's scary do you know what I mean where it's like I got comments I got comments from someone my former boss I was like oh oh yep oh right right if you put something go on the internet online anyone can see it anyone and also like people I went to high school with yeah I'm like oh I forgot that that's a thing and I guess with this podcast you know I don't know
Starting point is 00:06:14 who I don't I don't know I I feel like it's I it's different like it's like there's something about someone I went to high school with reading what I wrote that's just so actually genuinely scary, like actually scary. So, I'm just reckoning with that in my own brain. And also, I think I might take like a short break from it for a second because I have to figure out like what I'm even doing with it. Like what's the of it? So I'm figuring that out. But it's been really nice. I've heard from a lot of TSDW listeners who have been very nice to me about it. And that has made me feel really good. It's made my heart grow like a thousand sizes. So thank you to anyone who reached out who is a TSDW listener. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And if you went to Henley's High school, don't fucking say a word. You don't reach out. You stay quiet. Don't say anything to me. That's it. That's it. That is scary. It's a vulnerable thing,
Starting point is 00:07:17 but luckily it's really good and you're very talented. So. I'm such a good writer. You have to say that. You have to say that because you're my mom you're right no i could just say we could just say we're proud of you for doing it we don't
Starting point is 00:07:33 have to go into detail about it being good there are plenty of ways to support somebody vaguely that's true specifically that's true i was gonna say you guys being my like bestest friends being nice to me about it. It does feel a little bit like, well, you're you're my mom. Like you have to be nice to me about it. But why do you think we're your friends? It's because we think you're smart and cool. We're not your mom.
Starting point is 00:07:55 You know, we chose this. Yes. And this is really important, too. I did include Sammy and Joel's Letterboxd reviews in the latest sub stack. Because Sammy has a review on her letterbox. If you haven't read it, you've got to go to her letterbox right now and read it.
Starting point is 00:08:11 It was a surprise of a lifetime for me when I read it. I laughed out loud by myself. I did not see that coming. I think about it a lot. Should I say what it is? No, I think, no. People need to go to your letterbox and read it. lot i think about it a lot should i say what it is no i think no oh we're just gonna people need
Starting point is 00:08:26 to go to your letterboxd traffic going to my letterboxd stack yes right or that there's a screenshot there yep uh well i broke my brain yesterday as well in a different way because i watched an entire season of The Traders in one sitting. Which one? Which season? Wait, that's a lot. That's a lot. It was nine hours.
Starting point is 00:08:51 It was a long time. I worked overtime on The Traders. Wow. Well, it was a rainy Saturday. So, you know. It was honestly. What else are you supposed to do? It was great.
Starting point is 00:09:01 But it was Australia season two. And anyone who has watched it will know why it was a scary experience it's everyone on it is so stupid it's the dumbest people i've ever seen playing this game it's unbelievable how bad they are at it. I was essentially rage watching it being like, how is everybody this stupid? I need to find out what happens. I don't know. I just couldn't stop. Wasn't season one really good?
Starting point is 00:09:34 Yes. Wasn't that? And then they canceled it after season two. Australia traders got canceled because of these dum-dums. Wow. Wow. Wow. I actually do recommend watching it, even though it was the most frustrating and infuriating TV experience I've had in a while. But that said, I was absolutely glued to it.
Starting point is 00:09:57 I could not turn it off. Because were you waiting for them to get smart? Were you waiting for there to be a Well, there was like a handful of slightly redeemable players and so it would be like there's someone to root for and like how are they gonna get ahead? And I don't want to give any spoilers but the finale is something that i has never
Starting point is 00:10:32 happened before i don't think in any other traders it's really a one-of-a-kind season i'll say that wow okay and you're the you are i think now the foremost traders expert. I'm, I'm obsessed with it. And Emily, you recommended it at first. I truly, they keep adding more seasons to Peacock. I've watched all of them,
Starting point is 00:10:53 except I'm going to start New Zealand next. That New Zealand season one came out. I've heard that's a, I've heard that's a good one. So I'm excited for that, but no, there's a, there's a lot.
Starting point is 00:11:04 There's non-English language ones. I think there's a Dutch one. I can't for that but no there's a there's a lot there's non-english language ones I think there's a dutch one I can't remember but um that might be the original anyways yeah I love it a lot but nine hours of just being so angry watching it was really a crazy thing to do but I did it and I don't regret it but you didn't wait. Maybe that I know this is just a stereotype, but the stereotype of Dutch people specifically who they literally don't bullshit you. Right. They just tell you exactly what they feel to your face. Like nothing. Like they don't hold anything back.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I haven't heard that. But I guess. I'm just imagining that scenario in traders and how difficult that would be. That is an interesting cultural experiment. Yeah. Yeah. It is fun to see the differences from country to country. We got to check it out.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Check it out. And another scary thing that that specifically led to was me watching today's movie at 8 a.m. this morning because I could not stop watching Traders last night and it was too late I started at like 1pm and so I watched till basically like 11 I was like well now I gotta go to bed so I gotta
Starting point is 00:12:15 watch this in the morning I had seen it before I'll tell you what it is this week's movie is Revenge came out in 2017 written and directed by Corley Fargiat. Starring Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Kevin Janssens,
Starting point is 00:12:32 Vincent Cologne, and Guillaume Bouchardet. It is streaming on Shudder.com. And we have a guest with us today to talk about this film. She is a comedian, actor, writer, director. We're so happy to have her. Avital Ash, welcome.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. Yay. We're so happy to have you. You said my name so nicely, too. It's always uncomfortable if I'm like, do I correct them or do I just have it be wrong? You got to correct them. You got to.
Starting point is 00:13:03 I feel like you can't go through a whole podcast being like, I guess my name is different now. There was one time where I corrected them and then they still proceeded to say it worse than the first time the rest of the episode. What do people usually say? Sometimes people say Avital. Avital. Which I really don't like. And some people don't hear the difference.
Starting point is 00:13:23 You know, and I'm like, oh, it's Avital. They're still like, yeah, Avital. And I'm like, okay. As far as we're not going to get it. We're not going to get anywhere. Well, did anything scary happen to you this week? So, yes, I've been a little backstory is that I did this solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe and it went great and I planned to keep doing it and then I got a job um so I've been working full-time on this show that'll that'll be it's like a comedy horror so for horror fans that'll be fun I don't the name will probably change it'll be out in like October of 2025 because animation takes forever, which I did not know. But so I've been working all the time and this Netflix show is ending soon and I'm going
Starting point is 00:14:12 to go back to doing the solo show. But for the last six months, I haven't performed at all. And it's not like riding a bike. It's very scary to take six months off. it's very scary to take six months off. And so I finally had like a couple standup shows and just devastating, like completely forgot what I planned to do when I got up there. And people are like, you've been doing this a while, right? I'm like, doesn't feel like it. You know, that sounds genuinely very scary i guess it feels like the scariest possible thing you can do like it's almost like it's like jumping out of a plane
Starting point is 00:14:52 or doing stand-up comedy are the same in the same category to me yeah i think i would have rather jumped out of a plane last night then i was gonna say yeah at least jumping out of a plane it's like no one's really watching you yeah it's like one action you're free to experience that like however you need to yeah last night i just did like crowd work because i was like i like fully everything i was gonna do just left my brain yep but it was just like a conversation It was more like a therapy session on stage. It was kind of fun, but terrifying. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Do you ever take a beta blocker? We're big fans of beta blockers here. I'm a fan too, and I didn't, and I don't know why. Damn. Damn. Missed opportunity. Next time. I lost my beta blockers, and I need them back, baby.
Starting point is 00:15:47 I need those motherfuckers. I'm not even doing stand-up comedy. Yeah, what do you need them for? Just for life. Yeah, life? Just in life. No, I really needed them more for when I had a job. When I had a job, which I no longer have a job.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Now I'm just a stay-at-home mom. Congratulations. Not just. Yeah. Thank you. No, you are a stay-at-home mom but not just yeah thank you you are a stay-at-home mom i am a stay-at-home mom and um but at my job i would have meetings all the time where they would make me so stressed out and you have to give presentations and stuff i would give have to give presentations and also just like in a corporate environment, having to present yourself in a certain way really stresses me out. If I'm going into something where I know I can just be myself, I'm way more calm. But when you know you have to act in a very specific way, oh my God, it really stressed me out. So beta blockers helped a lot. If you were taking them regularly,
Starting point is 00:16:42 this is such a hypocritical thing to say. I was going to say if you're like taking them regularly for your work, then it's probably good that you're not doing that anymore. But then it's like, yeah, I definitely should have taken it for my show and like will. For your work. Yep. Yeah. If something makes you want to die, that's a good sign for the field you're in. It depends on the kind, the flavor of wanting to die yeah
Starting point is 00:17:06 the flavor of death yeah it's there's different versions you know different spices to that uh craving of death speaking of craving death um do you have do you like horror movies in general what's your relationship to horror yes i'm excited to talk to you guys about it because for so long i would i would like see a commercial for a horror movie and, I'm excited to talk to you guys about it. Because for so long, I would I would like see a commercial for a horror movie. And I would not want to see it because I didn't want to be scared. And I didn't want to have nightmares. But I would also be like dying to know what would happen. And so I would just read the Wikipedia. And there's so many movies that even now I've like kind of spoiled for myself because I do I'll watch it, but I know what
Starting point is 00:17:42 happens. And I really wanted to feel braver like like as you were talking about jumping out of a plane I'm like oh yeah I should do that and it'll make me braver and I thought like oh watching scary movies would be a good way to kind of like the cave you fear to enter hold the treasure you seek kind of a thing and my friend Jessica who's awesome um and a new mom also a stay-at-home mom, loves horror. So we started a podcast together that was basically like she was the pro and I was like the newbie and scared. And we've been on a hiatus for a while.
Starting point is 00:18:14 But it was so much fun and it really changed things for me. I've gotten super into horror and it's like mostly what I want to watch most of the time. Man. Cool. It's the best. Yeah. I agree. And it really... The most of the time. Man, it's the best. Yeah, I really the more you get exposed to it. Yeah, I'm still too scared to watch a lot of things. But I would say that I love horror and I'm like so interested in it.
Starting point is 00:18:37 And I think it's such a cool genre. And it really is like the more you learn about it, the more you're into it. Yeah. And it is also like the one genre that continuously doesn't need to have names to make money and that's really cool that they're like yeah i've never seen anybody in this movie in anything else right yeah exactly i mean granted they're foreign actors but still yeah it's uh i do feel a lot braver i listened to your episode on Speak No Evil. And like, I would say my tolerance has gotten so high that the only movies to really fuck me up now are Speak No Evil and Bone Tomahawk, which we talked about doing.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Like, otherwise, I'm pretty okay. I was going to ask what scares you most because, yeah, I have the same thing. Like, when you're exposed to so much, it's like you need to keep kind of upping the stakes to feel scared. But I still struggle with jump scares. They're just like, I just have a big jump reflex. And I really don't do well in a jump scare heavy movie. And it's also just like, you know, depending on how it's done sometimes there's some really good jump scares but for the most part it's kind of like a it can be feel like a cheap trick yeah
Starting point is 00:19:51 and just a way it feels like it shaves years off your life sometimes you're like oh that's a year gone yep yep like well my heart is not handling this well the worst is when you know it's coming too and you're like, it's about to happen. It's okay. I know it's coming. That's what I hate. And then it still gets you and you jump and you're like, I knew that this exact thing was going to happen at this exact moment and I still jumped. Yep. Yep. Also, I feel like I can sort of see, I think you're wearing a Suspiria shirt i am oh yeah for you guys um i love it we love that movie it's so good and the new one is legit scary like the yeah the original is is really beautiful and effective but not necessarily scary and the new one is also
Starting point is 00:20:39 like actually terrifying yep yeah i really love both versions. Also like very different films. Yes. But both great. Both great. Yeah. It was like home invasion stuff that really scared me versus like, like anything supernatural doesn't really. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Like not in a way that I take to sleep. I used to take it to sleep, but now. Are you excited for the new strangers movie it kind of looks like a remake though i feel like it might be oh is it a remake wait it has a very cool cast doesn't it i feel like every time we bring it up i'm excited and now i can't remember i can't remember it's i know it's madeline patch from riverdale i don't know i don't know who else is exciting that's the only one that matters yeah that's all I care about.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Haven't seen the original, which is crazy. There were like a handful I was really scared to watch. Like funny games, I was always terrified. And then I did okay, I think, because I was so terrified of how terrified I was going to be that it was actually kind of fine. Yeah, you like over-psyched yourself. Yes. I know you guys have done Martyrs. I've been a bit too scared to watch Martyrs.
Starting point is 00:21:44 That's a tough one. That is a tough one. It's also like, I would say it's not super scary. It's just so feel bad. It just, it makes you feel like absolute shit. As someone who likes to feel bad, I feel like that one was a bit much even for me. When we first started this podcast, we had a guest who came on who loved horror movies, loved, loved, loved them. But she said, she was like, the one that I couldn't handle was Martyrs.
Starting point is 00:22:19 She was the one that was like, too far was Martyrs. And so from that moment forth, I was like, I'm terrified. I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't. And then we did it. And how did you do? It wasn't as bad as Speak No Evil. Speak No Evil still haunts me and it will till I die. I mean, I think for the rest of my life. Do you think from listening that was the worst one? Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Speak No Evil. Yes. And I feel like when I was listening, I mean, you guys did a great job.
Starting point is 00:22:45 And usually it is like your imagination fills it in a little bit. But was like i don't know the movie might be scarier than yeah the recap it's i think it's just so what happens is so bad yeah that in any form it's it's just really yeah and the acting is just really really bad Like sometimes you're imagining it is scarier because in the movie you're like, oh, I can tell that they're acting. But like their performances are flawless, pitch perfect. So there's no relief where you're like, oh, I see. I see what's behind that. It's just nonstop. That's the one that the remake is happening this year with a bit pretty good cast.
Starting point is 00:23:24 I just remember Scootcnerry and uh james mcavoy mackenzie davis i think oh that'll be cool really interesting yeah i wonder if they'll change the ending yeah i'm i'm a little confused i feel like the american there hasn't been very good american remakes lately i feel like the ring was kind of the last one yeah it's been a while the ring and funny games being like a shot for shot remake yes by the same filmmaker is speak no evil gonna be the same filmmaker i wonder no no it's uh who is it we just talked about this we because we i feel like covered another movie that this director did i think it was the director of eden lake yes eden lake yes okay cool
Starting point is 00:24:13 which is also upsetting so it it does feel like they at least will have that that's pretty down that helps the corley fargiat uh who directed revenge has another movie coming out with like an amazing cast that apparently started production in 2022 but there's i can't find any updates and what's going on with it but it's so cool when it's like a female filmmaker who just knocks it out of the park especially for her first movie right out the gate just coming out swinging she does yeah i'm so i'm so interested in this movie i don't think i've ever heard of it and i'm very curious i'm very curious about it and i'm curious what made you choose this movie i was really like spinning out because i was so excited about the possibility of
Starting point is 00:24:58 like six different movies um but i thought well it's weird to call like this is a slight spoiler but sort of a rape revenge movie weird to call it fun but it is so fun it's almost like an action movie which i also don't normally love um and i think i'm really curious to hear what you guys think and especially sammy you having seen it before but like it's something that I think I wouldn't love like if I read the Wikipedia I'd be like this sounds fine right it's really in the way that it's made and there's pieces of it that are just like unbelievable that could ruin it for me where you're like well that would never happen right but I think she really picks and chooses those moments that are like so heightened that they could never happen and then pieces that are so grounded and real and relatable i told i have definitely seen those criticisms of like this
Starting point is 00:25:50 is impossible and for some reason yeah none of it ever bothered me i was i never felt taken out of it i yeah it was just along for the ride and you saying that it reminds you of like an action movies i did see that she said the director said she in pitching it i can't remember all the movies she said but one of them was drive and i feel like i can definitely feel that kind of vibe in it yeah it has a neon vibe in a similar way to drive oh'm excited. I don't know anything about this movie and I can't wait. I did think about Bone Tomahawk and now I'm just playing out the parallel universe
Starting point is 00:26:32 where we do that one and it's just such a different experience. But I'll be listening when you do do it. I have not seen it and that's one that I'm also nervous about. I'm nervous. Yeah. Ooh, I don't know. There's like two shots in that movie that I still also nervous about. I'm nervous. Yeah. Oh, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:45 There's like two shots in that movie that I still think about all the time. Much like Emma. Yeah. I'll be listening. Or if you don't end up. Yeah. I mean, we're going to have to do it someday. There's no avoiding it.
Starting point is 00:26:58 I think it's really good, at least. It's not just like pain for pain's sake. I don't know. I never wanted shit on anyone because making a movie is so hard. It's hard to make a movie. But like Irreversible, I get why people love it. I don't. Like that just feels bad.
Starting point is 00:27:12 I've never seen that one either because I can't psych myself up enough. I'm just like, well, I know what's going to happen in I think the first 10 minutes of this movie and I just don't want to don't want to do that and there are people who are like it's a masterpiece it's such which is kind of how I feel about speak no evil but for some reason irreversible I'm like no I just don't feel good and I don't like it yeah and that's totally fair and of course now I really want to know everything about irreversible I know now I'm like I'm like am I to Google it? Would you count it as a horror movie, I wonder? I think we've had it requested, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Yeah? I never thought of it as a horror, but it's just like a painful drama. Yeah. Like, it just is relentless. That's essentially horror. That's essentially horror. It is. We can work with that.
Starting point is 00:27:58 We can work with that. We can work with that. I will tell us that Revenge has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, 81% on Metacritic, and a 6.4 on IMDb. Real standard IMDb stuff. Of course it does. Yeah. I did see a lot of hate for it on Reddit, too. I was surprised.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Just a lot of people being like, this is not good. Why do people like this movie? Interesting. Yeah? Interesting. Yeah. Interesting. Okay. Well, we will watch the trailer at the end and that will be available on our Patreon. But I feel like let's just get into this recap.
Starting point is 00:28:37 All right. Let's do it. Let's do it. Oh, yeah. In the past few years, I have hit a point where I only want to be wearing clothes that are comfortable. It happened. It happened to me. But you know what? I still also want to look cute. And these are two desires that are often extremely opposing. And I don't want to have to sacrifice. I want both. I want comfort. And I want to feel cute and confident. And guess what? Skims has
Starting point is 00:29:03 freaking done it again with their soft lounge collection. I am currently very, very obsessed with, I have the soft lounge tank and boxer set. Okay. This tank, it's a great little rib tank. Classic. You can wear it every day. You can pair it with jeans. You can wear it out in the world, or you can wear it with this little boxer short that is so comfortable. It is super, super soft, lightweight rib. They're great. I also truly have been for years stealing Joel's boxer briefs to wear as sleepwear and loungewear. And guess what? That ain't cutting it. I'm not feeling too cute in those. I'm not feeling too comfortable. But Desperate Times, however, Desperate Times know more because Skims has done it you too can get on board with this you can see
Starting point is 00:29:47 just how cute and comfortable you can be shop the skims soft lounge collection at skims.com now available in sizes extra extra small through 4x and if you haven't yet be sure to let them know that we sent you after you place your order select podcast in the survey and select too scary didn't watch in the drop down menu that follows. I used to love back to school shopping so much that I would tell my mom that I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up because I just loved getting all the things that I needed that I would use every day in class. I still to this day have
Starting point is 00:31:26 nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number two pencils. Really scary stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need notebooks or number two pencils anymore. But this fall there is something that I will be using every day and would be terrified to be caught without, and that's Raycon's best-selling everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks every day, and so I need earbuds that I can rely on to listen to all my favorite podcasts, and I know you guys listen to podcasts as well so you know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon black because that's my vibe but they come in other cool colors as well like forest green and brush violet but my favorite thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours and they
Starting point is 00:32:27 have a new quick charge function. So 10 minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of battery life. Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a long morning walk. you forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode of a podcast. It's only going to take you 10 minutes. It's incredible. So go to buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get 20 to 40% off site-wide. that's right you'll get up to 40 off everything on raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary buyraycon.com slash too scary oh well we open on this vast desert it was shot in morocco and you really get the sense of like you're in this place where no one is around and it's a chopper moving through the air and on the helicopter are jen and richard and as they disembark from this chopper and to this like incredible house which we'll have to discuss because it ends up feeling like a character in the movie the pilot gives richard some peyote in a little bag
Starting point is 00:33:46 and they go into this house it's like full glass like the whole all the walls are glass and there's two panels one is pink and one is blue and it just like i don't part of it makes it feel almost like barbie-ish or something it feels very feminine yes yes i love the little pink and blue windows also like stereotypical man and woman colors and this is a uh exploration of that in a bit yep that's a very good observation that i didn't think of but that's so true i love the immediate introduction of drugs too in a horror movie peyote right off the bat immediately yeah like isolated and drugs like oh let's see what happens already a recipe for something and they go into the house with their cool glass walls and they immediately start having sex and then he takes a call from his wife
Starting point is 00:34:38 who's uh planning their kids communion and like talking about the menu that they're gonna have and she's immediately bummed out like kind of on her side and sad but you get you realize that she does know um because he says everything would be so simple if the kids weren't there and then he says and if you didn't have such a nice ass which seems to do it for her she's kind of like haha okay i'm back i'm back she also says or no he says a really crazy line he's like saying talking about her juicy ass peachy juicy ass and he says he says it's like a little alien that came from another planet i did not notice that line the first time
Starting point is 00:35:19 i watched it but was just like her ass is like a little alien that came from another planet. It like made me think he's trying to say your ass is out of this world. But it's like your ass is a little alien that came from another planet. Because they're French. And I don't know where she's from, but she's got to be from somewhere else. Yes, because they speak English to each other. But he speaks French on the phone to his wife. And I believe she is Italian. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:35:46 I actually had no idea. I don't know if they ever even say it. No, they don't say it. But she was born in Italy, but I think went to school in America and then college in Italy. Because I got confused also. I was like, wait, I feel like, why aren't they just speaking French? But obviously, yeah, she doesn't speak speak french which is convenient for us as viewers i feel like this and speak no evil are the only movies i can think of that are like foreign films but in english they're almost
Starting point is 00:36:13 entirely in english yep um because it's like the common tongue uh but anyway she's like uh in her undies now i'm not sure if it's the same night or the next morning i think maybe this is the same i think it's the following morning she's in her undies and like a t-shirt and she goes to get a glass of water and she takes a bite of an apple and then she sees through the glass like a man with like guns strapped to him and like bullets and she drops her glass and the apple now i'm not sure yeah but definitely the glass shatters um and then you see there's a second man and she calls for richard she's like richard uh what and he comes yeah she's like half naked and there's just two men there um and there you realize they're for to do this
Starting point is 00:36:57 like male hunting trip but they've shown up a day early in their hunting gear yeah like let me show up with all of the bullets strapped to my body yes and guns blazing yeah which doesn't actually make sense story-wise but it is a nice visual unsettling for sure yes and then uh they like richard comes out and he's like there's like an awkward beat where finally he's like this is my friend jen and like she's in her underwear it's very clearly not his friend but they sort of smile knowingly and they're ogling her and you know she's half naked and very beautiful but it's like creepy yeah so she excuses herself she's like i'm gonna go take a shower and leaves and then stan so yeah one of the guys i'm like how do we even differentiate them one is named stan stan and and dimitri i don't know they don't need much differentiation they're just both two guys ogling her yeah stan
Starting point is 00:37:54 and dimitri dimitri's a little quieter yes that's the one thing yeah um i i also just want to say he Richard in the scene when they have sex walks out fully naked. We see full frontal very early on in this movie. I just wanted to point that out. Yeah, there's a lot of nudity parody in this film, which I really like because sometimes it's just the women and here not the case. No, great. Nope, not the case nope great nope not the case and uh we get a comment from stan about like oh how's elizabeth and the kids you know like as obviously he's there with this girl and richard goes uh to where she is like to go check on her while she's taking a shower and
Starting point is 00:38:38 on his way he picks up the apple that she dropped and like just tosses it to them and stan catches it and he's sort of like examining the apple and Dimitri turns on the TV which like these are very small moments but on a rewatch you're like oh this is weirdly foreshadowing um you know like biting of the apple and and sort of him passing it along proverbially hinting at what to come and Dimitri just kind of checks out and turns on the TV and then we're at that night and they're like by the pool and they're sort of partying. And now she's in a bikini. But the whole time she's wearing these cool like bright pink star earrings.
Starting point is 00:39:14 And that's like the one constant of her wardrobe. She's wearing kind of pink everything for the most part. And she has this like I heart LA shirt at one point. That's very funny. She like really wants to move to L.A. Because she says they notice you there. And at one point Stan is like, notice does what? And she's like, just to be noticed.
Starting point is 00:39:34 She just like wants to go to L.A. and be seen. And while they're by the pool, you get like a quick shot of like the apple starting to brown and the tv which has i don't know anything about i'm like is this wrestling is this mma i think it's wrestling yeah i don't know either uh one of those for sure some kind of men fighting in a ring um rolling around which i'll be curious to hear what you think of some of the tv shots because they do use it very well. But some of it I'm like, wonder why they chose like that this is what's on the TV. And they're all just like having a good time. And you see Dimitri's like kind of watching her through the binoculars at the table. And one of them notices the peyote and they get excited about it. But Richard is like, this plus weapons equals guaranteed accidents. And he tells a story about a Polish guy who got
Starting point is 00:40:24 so high on it that he sawed off his own leg and didn't feel anything and just bled out when they found him. There was not a drop of blood left in his body. So he asks Jen to put it somewhere safe. And she goes inside. She's wearing a locket and she puts it inside of her locket. And then before she comes out, she turns the music on like all the way up and she comes out and she's like kind of doing a sexy dance for these three men. And she tries to pull Richard up to dance with her, but he's like, no, no, no. So then she moves on to Stan and is doing this like sexy dance with him, which feels to me and maybe I'm projecting Sammy. Let me know if like it almost feels to me like this is for Richard.
Starting point is 00:41:02 Like, yes. No, I think that's true. It almost feels to me like this is for Richard. Yes. No, I think that's true. She's looking at Richard and he does look like he's kind of enjoying this a bit. Yeah. And maybe a little bit like, you don't want to dance with me, so I'm going to dance with your friend.
Starting point is 00:41:15 How do you like that? And then it kind of works as the song ends. Richard's like, okay, my turn and picks her up and throws him over her shoulder and they go to the bedroom. Yep. Richard's like okay my turn and like picks her up and throws him over her shoulder and they go to the bedroom yep um and creepily I guess Stan is sort of like I mean it feels normal level creepy but he's like oh we were just starting to have fun and then in the morning uh she wakes up Richard's not there we get another shot of the apple and now there's like an ant on it. And she comes out by the pool. I hate this fucking apple. The ants are somehow disturbed by the ants in this.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Just waste some ants later. This is why horror movies are terrible is because of the filmmaking. It's because of decisions like this. Filthy dirty. Filthy dirty. Oh, no. But it does feel somehow so feminine where you're like, these are like details that like a man would overlook traditionally, maybe. Right.
Starting point is 00:42:13 There's like a nice shot of the moon earlier, too, and like a crossfade. But yeah, it's like all in these little details. She comes outside and she doesn't see Richard. She just sees Stan, the guy who's been like, oh, we were just having fun. And he's like immediately very eager. Like he gets up and pulls her chair out for her, for her to sit.
Starting point is 00:42:32 And he's like, oh, you missed a spot. There's like a spot of sunscreen on her back and he rubs it in. Dimitri is in the pool. He's like on a floaty kind of passed out. Stan says he's nursing a hangover and he has a magazine like folded over his face like shielding out the sun which is also a metaphor for uh what's to come stan says that richard has just gone to give their passports to the gamekeeper so he's not here
Starting point is 00:42:57 so it's just the two of us he says which is funny because dimitri is right there there's yeah but it it kind of might as well just be the two of them as dimitri's like kind of hidden and checked out yep and there's all these like long uneasy stares oh god it's so tense and she does immediately so uncomfortable you're just he's just smiling at her so big and oh and she's doing it too but you can feel the force behind it yep yep like her politest tightest smile that I feel like we've all had versions of that where you're like. Yep. Oh, you hate to be alone in a house with a guy who's making you feel that way.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Yeah. Also in like the complete middle of nowhere. There is nothing around. It is desert for miles and miles around. Yeah. You need a helicopter to get out of here yeah like oh really bad really bad it's so bad and then she finally like just checks her phone but you can feel like the stiffness even of like almost like is this okay like am i allowed to be
Starting point is 00:43:58 on my phone and she can just feel him still staring at her so then eventually she's like and she's so like polite and nice and she keeps up this like sort of bubbly but you can feel her discomfort and she's like i'm gonna start packing if i want to be ready on time i think we get another shot of the apple and we get a shot i like this again on like the second viewing of the floaty from underneath the pool like you just see um dimitri like you know i guess kind of like his butt and the floaty, but you're like under in the pool looking up. And she goes into the bedroom, she changes out of her swimsuit. And she's topless now she's like taken off, you know, the swimsuit about to get changed. And Stan is like behind her watching. Sorry, didn't mean to scare you, which makes me so angry because he's not like, sorry, I'm watching you be naked. Like he doesn't even seem to think that that's a problem. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Just that he might have scared her is the only. Yeah, he's not. He's not turning around and walking out of the room. He's like, he's not covering his eyes. He's like continuing to come into the room. And she apologized. I feel like she apologizes to him and it's like or no not maybe apologize but she's like excuses it yeah you just surprised me that's all like she's still
Starting point is 00:45:09 it's basically an apology like sorry for existing kind of yeah yeah yeah oh it's so uncomfortable but then instead of leaving like she's in the middle of so she goes onto the bed basically to grab a shirt and like cover herself she sits down i'm acting it out and i'm like nobody can like when i said she does this and you're like she he doesn't cover his eyes thank you for i forget she gets on the bed like covers herself puts on a shirt and he comes in and sits on the bed next to her oh and he's like wow this is a nice bedroom and she's like kind of doing the like polite giggling don't murder me thing that we've learned and then he says it really is a shame we didn't get to know each other better and he gives her a business card which i tried to like zoom in and see it seems like it's just it's like european affairs or
Starting point is 00:45:53 something vague but he says call me when you can we could do a thing or two together which to me gives me like a little bit of a sense of safety of like okay this is a future problem this is not a now problem right right of like call me down the line we can and she says oh i i don't know if i'll have time with work and then he goes oh work so now you're a fucking politician here we go it's weird he's i feel like i did a bad job of it because he's very polite which is almost more unnerving like he's not yelling at her he's like oh so now you're a fucking politician like it still feels yeah polite it's like a which makes it feel like he's too in control that's what's scary about it yeah it's the perfect like slow frog in boiling water like yes what's the moment here where it's going too far. Pulling out a chair, then entering the room, then sitting on the bed.
Starting point is 00:46:46 Yeah. And it is. It's interesting. I guess just I keep bringing up Speak No Evil. Again, there is this theme of politeness. It feels that way. Yeah, yeah. But there you're like there are things they can do, whereas here you're like she can't go and there's nowhere.
Starting point is 00:47:03 She could, I guess guess be more firm but like would that keep her safer than just being polite so you really feel how stuck she is and then i i love this part it's so fucked up i just love the specifics of he's like what is it you don't like about me which again gives kind of the illusion of choice right of like yeah i'm interested i just want to know like we should hang out in the future no okay well what is that you don't like but obviously you know it's more sinister it's not just like an innocent question um and he doesn't let it go and then finally she and you can feel her like settling on it you're you're too small you know
Starting point is 00:47:40 and she's kind of like pleased with having found she's like i like a taller guy you know like you're you're just not my type don't say that it is like it is a i feel like men tend to be insecure about that exact thing it's not the smartest yeah you should almost be like you're too handsome i like uglier men i'm intimidated you're you're too muscular i would i would i couldn't handle it i'm afraid you would break me with your big strong muscles and then he says i think that i i love this part of the scene because it's so creepy but he says but i haven't changed heights since yesterday have i and she's sort of like stuttering and he's like and yet you seem to like me yesterday and she's like no like stuttering and he's like, and yet you seem to like me yesterday. And she's like, no, but I and then he's like, yeah, when we were dancing together last night,
Starting point is 00:48:30 everything was very clear. I wrote this down because it's so creepy. He says, you came on to me like a pussy and heat rubbing yourself against me turning me on. And now suddenly I'm not your type like that boom during the night I've become too small for you. like that boom during the night i've become too small for you oh god oh god oh god i have goosebumps it's so bad oh it's so bad it's so bad and he says yesterday you were dying for it and he puts his hand down her underwear and she tries to stop him and she says stop richard will be back anytime soon which i just like the it's like the kind of broken english richard will be back anytime soon and then he makes fun of her and he's like oh richard and he flips her against the wall the glass wall that we've seen and he unzips
Starting point is 00:49:11 his pants and then suddenly you hear like a creak and you're like okay and they both stop and look and it feels like maybe there's a reprieve and she's being saved and you see um uh what's his name dimitri dimitri they're like eating like a chocolate nougat bar and you get real close on his mouth just watching chocolate that he's chewing and it's this like limbo moment of is he gonna do something and then finally says stan says if you want some come in otherwise get lost in french And there's a long beat and she's crying and he's still just like eating his chocolate bar. And then he turns and leaves. He looks a little bit troubled. He can hear her screaming and he looks like a little bit upset.
Starting point is 00:50:00 And he kind of turns around like maybe he's going to do something. And he just turns the volume on the TV all the way up and this is like cars racing i guess maybe like the the tv stuff is just the traditionally masculine thing i'm not totally sure it does feel like yeah yep men men men's stuff men's oh god and it is like exactly the thing of like you know the magazine over the head in the pool he's just gonna ignore it and then he like he goes outside and and jumps in the pool and the shot is framed in a way that you can see uh jen and stan in the reflection in the in the window as he's jumping into the pool just ignoring it yeah but i will say it like doesn't show much of an actual rape scene it's still happening and it's
Starting point is 00:50:54 still it's still horrible no yeah but it's not as graphic as other movies of this kind and i appreciate that it isn't me as well yeah yeah and it is it's almost disturbing how beautifully it's shot because the cinematography is incredible and the setting is beautiful yes yes the desert it's like it's framed like you said it's just so beautifully framed but you know what's happening yeah and it's him willfully going for a swim while this young girl is being raped yep also i again you know i love that this movie is called revenge because we have a little bit of a hint about what this movie might be maybe more to come so i can tolerate this for the time being
Starting point is 00:51:39 because it's happening at the beginning of the movie rather than at the end of the movie yes totally have you guys ever seen The Nightingale? Yes, that we've talked about. I do not recommend. We've talked about that before. That's a big one for a movie. I won't be. I'll never watch that again.
Starting point is 00:51:53 I know. I thought it was a great movie, but I just, I can't imagine ever watching it again. I was so angry at it, which I guess is the point, but I was like, nope. Yeah, yeah. This is not that thank thank goodness no great and richard comes back uh i got my partner to watch it with me because i'd seen it before and i was excited and i was like i think you'll like it and he was shocked that richard came back for whatever reason he thought like the passport thing was just
Starting point is 00:52:18 a ruse and that he was gone okay okay which is just funny i guess it may be a male thing like i that never even crossed my mind yeah me neither but he comes back and understatement of the century stan goes listen there's been a slight problem with jen which is so fucked up but also so funny like what there's been a slight problem i mean it is funny it's a funny way to introduce that like she's a microwave that like doesn't how do i massage this message i'm gonna control the narrative right now yeah and uh then he goes to check on her and we don't like hear exactly what he's told but it sounds like a version of the truth like he knows enough when he comes and he goes to check on her and she's like call the helicopter i want to go home and then we can hear him kind of yelling at them but it's still
Starting point is 00:53:09 kind of gentle for what has happened it's like mildly yelling like what the fuck is wrong with you kind of a thing and she falls asleep when she wakes up he's like over her and he says don't worry i fixed everything i made a few calls to find you a job in canada it's practically la and then he yeah because you know she's been saying oh well we were talking about she's wearing the i love la shirt but she also says she wants to live there like that's her dream the night before she's saying so canada is practically right next door and he says that he's transferred funds to her account and she can use them how she wants. And she's like,
Starting point is 00:53:45 no, I want to go home, which this is one part that I'm like, well, can't you use those funds and then leave Canada and go home? But obviously no one's thinking clearly. And we also, they don't say where home is.
Starting point is 00:53:57 So maybe it would be Italy in this case. I'm not sure. And he says, this is like the one part that confuses me. He says, you know, that's not possible. If you love me, think about me. He says, you know, that's not possible. If you love me, think about me.
Starting point is 00:54:07 So I don't know why she can't go home. But he doesn't want her to go home. Maybe she lives in France now. I don't know. And then he's like, OK, they fucked up big time, but you're so damn beautiful. It's hard to resist you. It's pretty much your fault. It's kind of on you, Jenen and he's not wrong like why
Starting point is 00:54:27 does she have to be so pretty you know exactly maybe if she was less hot i do really appreciate that this movie paints her as someone who like likes to be dressed skimpily and likes attention and is provocative and who still doesn't deserve this right of course like she does dance with him she is flirting and it's like yeah because fucking get over it like she could do whatever the hell she wants exactly like i think the simpler version is she's like a nun you know and i love that it's not she's sleeping with a married man she's you know she's flawed but that doesn't make any of this okay and then he says they'll come and apologize and we'll forget the whole thing which also is very funny it's like if he's just like i'm sorry sorry about that sorry about that rape i did
Starting point is 00:55:14 sorry yeah she's like water under the bridge that was two hours ago and she's like insistent no call the helicopter and she's like call the helicopter I'll call your wife and tell her everything. And he slaps her. And she falls to the ground. And she starts running. She just runs out into the desert. And he starts chasing her. Yes.
Starting point is 00:55:36 Very important. Barefoot for this whole fucking movie. Oh, it's tough. You know, I like acting. I like like being a performer and i love watching this movie and no part of me wants to be that's what i was thinking of like she really just had to run barefoot through the desert there's there's no way that's not hot no and at night it's probably very cold and she's wearing very little yeah so this couldn't have been fun to shoot and she does a great i think she's a wonderful actress great she does such
Starting point is 00:56:12 a good job and and the guy who plays stan the rapist is also really good i thought the guy that plays richard is also really good i feel like they're all pretty good i was buying buying all of these performances. Yeah, wow, wow. Stan is a little like twitchy in a way that almost makes you feel kind of sorry for him versus just being like a mustache twirling bad guy, which I think is more effective. And Richard starts to run after her. And then this shot is also very funny. You see like the two men inside seeing them run.
Starting point is 00:56:43 And then it's like very like it almost feels like it's about to become a comedy for a second where like they get up and they start running too yep and everyone's chasing her and then finally she gets as far as she can go it's like the edge of this very very high cliff oh it's so scary and she's fast but now she's stuck and they all catch up to her and i mean i'm so bad at this but like how high is that looks like a hundred feet or something i'm really bad at this too my favorite thing to bring up is when emily and i tried to guess how many seats are at dodger stadium and we said a thousand uh it's a lot more than that we're way off it's like 30. Yeah. We might have said like 2,000, but we were way off.
Starting point is 00:57:27 We were way off. This is like 10,000 feet high. This is 10,000 feet. Or 100. I can't tell. Truly 100 or 10,000. It's probably 100. You won't live.
Starting point is 00:57:38 If you go off the cliff, you're not going to live. That's all that matters. Yep. Yep. Yep. It's so scary. And then finally, he's like, you know, acting like she's like that matters yeah yep yep yeah it's so scary and then finally he's like you know acting like she's like a dog who's ran away like trying to like soothe her
Starting point is 00:57:50 and kind of almost coax her back from the edge and he apologizes and he's like stan give me your phone and he calls the helicopter and is like i need you to come sooner i need you to come now and hangs up and is like okay he'll be here in 30 minutes. I don't believe it. But okay. And he kind of smiles. Oh, what was that? No, I just no, I just don't believe it. Not because I think you did. I just don't believe it. I could see your lips move, but I couldn't. And I was like, I think that was what you said. And yes, yeah, you're definitely skeptical. Like you're like, I hope he called the helicopter, but I'm not sure what's happening right now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:20 Skeptical. Like, you're like, I hope he called the helicopter, but I'm not sure what's happening right now. And she looks skeptical as well. She's giving him side eye like, I don't know whether I can trust you, but I don't know what other option I have. It feels very like, I hope you're telling the truth because exactly like what else can she do? And he like turns and looks back at the men for a second and then turns back to her and then just pushes her yeah and she falls so far and there's like a you know okay i did not see that coming to be completely honest holy shit it's me neither pretty fucking crazy and there's all of these like you know kind of dead trees because
Starting point is 00:59:06 it's so dry and there's one tree and she just falls on the top of it like a point and it goes through her body what like a steak yeah it's like impaled through her stomach what when does the revenge happen yeah wait what and then you can see even the rapist feels bad like he's not this mustache twirling he's like horrified and like what are you doing and then richard is like she could have put us all in jail for 15 years and i don't know if they even really show um i keep forgetting his name the third guy i keep on guillaume which i think is his real name uh dimitri dimitri i don't know if they even show him but stan you can tell feels bad So I keep forgetting his name, the third guy. I keep on calling him Guillaume, which I think is his real name. Dimitri.
Starting point is 00:59:47 Dimitri. I don't know if they even show him, but Stan, you can tell, feels bad. Stan feels bad. I would say Richard, obviously, because he did it, feels the least bad. He looks like he does not care at all. Nope. He's like, let's just do our usual hunt. We'll clean up the mess along the way and bring back our trophies like every year. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:06 Clean up the mess. Like doesn't feel fucking anything. No. So Stan is looking the most upset by this. And Dimitri looks somewhere in the middle. He's kind of a dummy. I don't know. He's he's seeming a little like, oh, I'm not thrilled about this.
Starting point is 01:00:20 But yeah. How do I just kind of just myself? And nothing. Most of the time. Yeah. Just sort of they myself a nothing most of the time he's just sort of there doing nothing which is also horrific yep and then richard burns her i love la shirt and they like prep for the hunt and he calls his wife and just has like a perfectly normal conversation with his wife and then stan tries to apologize he's like i'm really sorry about jen and richard is like who i've never heard of her who and then we're back on like the desert landscape with a little ant
Starting point is 01:00:54 and a drop of blood falls on the ant and it's weirdly so sad it's i had to Google if ants were okay. And I didn't get like the clearest answer, but other people on Reddit were concerned about this as well. Because there are a few shots of insects that seem like they die. And I was like, are you allowed to kill insects in movies? I don't think you are. But at the same time, an ant seem like ant style all literally all the time but seeing it so close up you're like no and it's like he's being like he starts to be like pummeled with these droplets of blood and you're like oh it just feels like such a slow horrible death for an ant i think it i think it is fake but if anyone can confirm that, I would love to know that no ants were harmed in the making of this.
Starting point is 01:01:51 It is hard to watch. That ant deserves a palm to ant. Palm to ant, yes. We should be giving out awards for those insects. There's also a cute image, like the giant trophy and the tiny ant. Oh my God. Be very cute. those insects it's also a cute image like the giant trophy and the tiny ant oh my god be very cute and so you see this like poor little ant and then you see her and there's ants like crawling all over her and there's blood everywhere but then suddenly she gasps in and you realize
Starting point is 01:02:18 she's alive oh my god but she's there's ants like on the wound, like the place where her where the branch is like going through her stomach. There's ants crawling like in the flesh. It's so gross. And this is that moment we're talking about where you're like, there's no way she could survive this fall. Although on the second watch, I'm like, actually, maybe the tree softens it because she can't like hit her head. But probably there's no way she could actually have survived this fall. There's probably a lot of force onto that tree regardless. A lot of, she loses a lot of blood.
Starting point is 01:02:53 A lot of blood. So much blood. And then she is struggling to reach. She had her iPod with her and a lighter. And she's like struggling to reach for it. And she finally gets the lighter and starts to set fire to some of the like dried brush at the base of the tree. And it feels almost like this Joan of Arc thing that you're prepared to see of like, is she going to burn herself alive? Like what's happening?
Starting point is 01:03:16 But it burns and catches the tree just enough to then like snap. So she's freed because she's like suspended on the tree. Oh, shit. That's smart. Yeah. I would never think to shit that's smart yeah i would never think to do that no i would have i would have just died slowly i definitely would have died i would 100 be dead yep and then you get from her like kind of freeing herself the men coming to where she is and i was so it's like one is a motorcycle one is what is that like a dune
Starting point is 01:03:43 buggy atvV type thing. ATV. I kept thinking RV and I was like, I know that's not what it is. I think it's ATV. Yeah. The four wheeler ones. Drive to Palm Springs. They ride them in The Bachelor all the time.
Starting point is 01:03:57 They love to ride them in The Bachelor. Basically the same movie or show. This is like The Bachelor. Yeah. So it's like an ATV, ATV? ATV. Motorcycle, ATV, and a truck. And they like all peel up to the site of where she's fallen. And at the same time, you see her like limping and like struggling. So it's this like race of like them coming to find her and her going to move. And she makes just in time she like presses herself against a wall and i don't know if she's supposed to be able to hear what they're saying but they don't see her and stan is maybe is like maybe it's not too late
Starting point is 01:04:33 we can take her to a hospital we'll get lawyers and richard is like firmly no uh but they know that she's alive at this point i feel like i'm'm with Richard and that it's like, you know what? I think there's no coming back from this. The best case scenario is she dies. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, good for him that he still kind of wants to do the right thing. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:57 After doing an atrocious. That ship has sailed. Yeah. It's done. And they, I think, decide to like wait until dark here. Not sure why. There were a couple moments where it gets to be nighttime and daytime again very quickly. That just kind of threw me off.
Starting point is 01:05:15 So I can't say for sure. Okay. It's dark, whether they want it to be or not. Darkness is happening. Darkness is happening. And they split up to be or not. Darkness is happening. Darkness is happening. And they split up in three different ways. And you have a Stan alone in his car. And it really feels like you're going to get this jump scare.
Starting point is 01:05:35 You're like kind of on the edge and you're like, she's going to be like in the backseat of his car and you never get it. And it's kind of cool just because it's the opposite of how you expect it to go. Yes. And as someone who, like I said, is not a big fan of jump scares no jump scares in this movie no jump scares yeah i don't think there are but there are there is that tension because yeah the framing of the shot has you know when it's the profile when someone's in a car and you can just see most of the window and you're like well someone's coming up to that window doesn't happen it doesn't happen which
Starting point is 01:06:03 is like good and bad because you're like i want her to fucking kill him yes yes but you don't get the jump scare and it's kind of nice and then you have dimitri off and he's like peeing into the lake beside the lake and he has his gun propped up right next to him and she manages to find him and she's sneaking up on him and she grabs his gun and points it at him and I can't remember now if he's like talking trash or he's like I think he's saying calm down calm down it's
Starting point is 01:06:31 trying to settle her down as if they didn't try to murder her she has no need to do anything drastic here she has like a hole through her abdomen she still has the branch in there okay the branches and that's honestly important that's like it is important keeping her alive
Starting point is 01:06:53 yes it's like she's still impaled running around like in her underwear and her earrings impaled barefoot yep oh and she finally goes to shoot him and it's empty and he's like you didn't think i would just leave like a loaded gun around did you i really did you do seem like the type same yes i really did too and he starts like dunking her in the water like almost drowning her at some point he radios maybe i think he radios stan and is like i found her i got her we're all good stan is like phew we got her it's it's under control because they're all pretty far away from because they spread out to look for her so dimitri is the only one uh that's got eyes on her yeah and he's like i got it and he's dunking her head in and
Starting point is 01:07:44 you get that same shot of like you're in the water looking up at the floaty but now you're in the water looking up at her yep as he's like almost drowning her but kind of pulling her up just to talk shit in between and then i wanted waterboarding her yeah and then one of the times he pulls her up she grabs a knife off of his like holster on the side and when she comes back up she stabs him in the head in the eye great great once in each eye she does one eye and then the next eye and leaves the knife in the second eye and this is like a hunting knife this is like a six inch knife that i feel like should have killed him instantly but he screams and screams for like 30 seconds but he can't see anything so he's just waving his arms around wildly in pain and she's watching terrified
Starting point is 01:08:33 until he like finally collapses and dies and we get a good look at his face and it's gross it is gross and i'm always like just in case take the knife just you don't know what's gonna happen and then she does she goes and she takes the knife and i was like yes all right hell yeah but we don't leave weapons lying around we just keep them also this like water in her wound is gonna be nasty and then as she climbs out of the lake she like collapses onto the sandy shore and i'm just like this wound is getting so nasty this like cannot feel even the slightest bit like how are you moving yeah but it is this nice you know i mean i saw some people complain that it's heavy-handed and i'm like i don't know i think it's perfect i like it that he like turns this blind eye and then she stabs him in the eyes
Starting point is 01:09:22 and while she's getting raped he like goes for a swim and she kills him in the water and leaves his body in the water which you know just makes for a disgusting corpse because it gets all like bloated and nasty yes yep um which we'll see in a little bit and she takes uh his bike and his backpack and she like goes off and finds this cave and then we're up on like again this is that thing where it's like night and then it's morning i guess once uh why do i keep once dimitri gets her they're all like great we're safe let's just go to sleep like right and like wakes up in his car and now it's day yeah so stan didn't go find them he was like oh dimitri will just kill her
Starting point is 01:10:07 and i just can't go to bed right now yeah they're assuming that dimitri will like come back to their original starting point that makes sense and then he they just fall asleep waiting for him probably yeah i guess so still a little strange yeah still a bit like okay you half killed this woman and then your friend killed him and you're just calm enough to fall asleep but okay stands asleep and i think what wakes him up is a bloody cat on his windshield and i love that this is just like as if richard isn't evil enough and maybe it's not a cat maybe it's some game that they found but this is like instead of a save the cat moment it's a literal like kill the cat moment yeah yeah he's just shot some game and like tosses it onto stan's windshield so now that's
Starting point is 01:10:49 like covered in blood yep um and then stan gets up to pee everybody lots of peeing and he like washes himself in the lake and then we see dimitri's body and so now they're a little scared and i wrote down that he kills a spider but now i don't remember i just remember it was upsetting as he's peeing he pees on the spider and this was the other thing because it looks so real the spider like like tries to run and he's following it with his pee with his pee and then it like shrivels up and dies the way that spiders do and it looks seems like it's real looks really real i really hope it's not real i know that we hate ai but i'm like can we can we just use it for this yeah i really hope that it is that but
Starting point is 01:11:35 also the way that this uh the like physics of this when uh dimitri's body floats up, Stan is crouched down at the side of the lake. And as he sees Dimitri's body, he screams and falls forward on top of it somehow. The way that just doesn't seem like would happen, but it does make it, it's pretty funny. Yeah. It's way better than like yeah just having to observe it from like to actually touch it way oh yeah way worse fallen face first on top of them
Starting point is 01:12:13 and it does look disgusting yep it's so scary um and he gets back into the car and he like has the windshield wipers on washing off all this blood from whatever it is that richard has shot and he's like i don't think he's even really freaking out in this moment well richard tells him to turn off the car because like it's bad for the environment or turn off the turn off the ac drives me crazy that he used he says it's not ecological, I think, is the phrase. Wild. And then he punches him in the face. What?
Starting point is 01:12:54 Rich, I think Stan's like, you broke my nose. He's like bleeding from the face, which is very funny because he finally gets like all the blood off the outside of the car. And now there's like all this blood. And then he's bleeding? Yes. Inside the car. They put or Richard rather puts rocks in Dimitri's pockets and stuff like he's just going to sink the body into the lake. And again, I think Stan is kind of freaking out about this. And that's maybe why he punches him to be like, calm down, but not really the best way to get somebody to calm down no no uh but he and he says richard says to stan we told him not to go hunting alone yes this guy's just like cold
Starting point is 01:13:35 blooded he doesn't seem to feel anything for his friend either no and now we get she wakes up in the cave. This is like a crazy sort of iconic sequence, I feel. She still has this thing in her, the branch sticking out of her stomach. And she opens the peyote that's in her locket because it dulls the pain. And she's like in excruciating. You see her trying to move it and it's just so painful. Yeah. in excruciating you see her trying to move it and it's just so painful yeah also in the backpack dimitri's backpack there was um no water but some tall boys so she's like chugging a beer to help with the pain and also i love that i don't even know how you're supposed to consume peyote but she's like chewing it and she like spits it out because i guess it's disgusting but then she like
Starting point is 01:14:24 puts it back in her mouth because she knows she's yeah it's so funny to me that you can be in like excruciating pain and still be like ew yucky but she like eats it again and and there's all of these like they do it um even early on when she's by the pool when she's dancing earlier where they just like splice in like little shots of like the apple or something going on like so so there's like quick shots of like flashbacks to stan being a creep and i can't remember what else but it's just this like splicing and and the music and like some sort of like echoey voices like it feels very atmospheric yep and she takes the knife that she's pulled out of um why will his name never stay with me the other guy she takes the knife and starts cutting around the branch because it's so tight and it needs room to give after chugging this beer and the beer again pretty on the nose but i sort of love it the the
Starting point is 01:15:27 beer has this like big bird like it looks like a phoenix on it um and she uses the knife to like kind of cut around the branch but also like cuts the beer down the center to open it up into like one long aluminum sheet typeuminum sheet type thing. Sheet is a great word. So it stops being a cylinder and starts to function as a sheet. And what does she use? She has something. Oh, maybe on the knife.
Starting point is 01:15:54 She folds it and like sticks it through the knife. Yep. And puts that in a fire. She's like made this fire and she uses the knife as a skewer. Perfect word. Because she does have a lighter. This like made me think like I should carry a lighter with me more often just in case you never know you never know if you're gonna end up in a situation where you're gonna need a fire that really is such a good point if we learned anything from this carry a lighter at all times she holds this this flattened beer can into the fire she pulls the steak essentially out of her stomach and then
Starting point is 01:16:28 presses the beer she's like unflinching in all of this too just like wide-eyed not feeling anything tripping yes oh my god she's like cauterizing her own wound yes and it gives her basically like the brand of this phoenix so now she's like has like a phoenix on her stomach like kind of rising from this horrific wound which does look really cool a little bit too cool like it doesn't look painful yes afterward it's very like clean it almost looks like a tattoo and those are some of the moments that i'm like, I'm surprised they don't bother me. But it just, you're just like, she's so cool that she's doing all of this. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:17:12 I like wasn't mad about it at all, even though it's like, yeah, theoretically, there's going to be some internal problems in there that we're just. Yeah, Steve went all the way through you. So the branch is completely gone. It's no longer inside of her. It's gone, she's cauterized up and good to go, baby. And on the back? She would have had to do both sides probably, right?
Starting point is 01:17:33 Cauterize on the back too? We don't see her do the back, but we do see like burns on the back later. So I guess she must have done it. We have to assume she did. Yep. And then she wakes up with these like few false starts. It seems like
Starting point is 01:17:46 she does pass out from the procedure she performs on herself and then wakes up and is you know grabs the gun and the knife and is about to go out of the cave and richard and is about to go out of the cave. And Richard walks up and says something like, Hey, darling. And then shoots her in the head. Her head like explodes. Oh, okay. Sorry.
Starting point is 01:18:16 She's dreaming. For a moment though, you're like, what? Yeah, just like you. And she wakes up screaming. And then it's almost like she's caught in a loop of it. It happens like three times that she sees him. She gets shot in the head. Head explodes.
Starting point is 01:18:32 She's seeing the bloated corpse of Dimitri sitting next to her, like vomiting water. It's just this scary, nasty montage of her drug tripping and ends finally with her like waking up screaming for real but i mean i guess yeah you wouldn't be in a great headspace for a trip no with all of that happening i it would probably be a pretty bad yeah experience not ideal conditions even with like the best shaman in the world like you're not yeah this is not great yep um but that but she is okay and it is a relief that you're like okay nobody's there about to blow her head off and then we see where they actually are and it's um uh stan wants to split up i mean uh richard wants to split up and stan doesn't and maybe this is the part where he says something like that we say that if you're in
Starting point is 01:19:20 a forest never to split up and he's like does it look like we're in a forest, never to split up. And he's like, does it look like we're in a forest? And sort of just makes fun of him. Yeah, Richard's just a real asshole through and through, start to finish. Yeah. He comes off nice in the beginning, but like really just worse and worse as it goes on. And so then we're with Stan and he's driving his truck through this very windy mountainous road. It looks really narrow. Like it looks like he could just go flying off at any moment. And he runs out of gas. And we see that Jen is like stalking him and has the gun. And she's watching and he like gets out and he's filling it with a jug of gas that he has in the car. filling it with a jug of gas that he has in the car and then finally she shoots and she gets his shoulder and like the blowback knocks her down which i also thought was cool because yeah why would she it's a huge gun yeah and it takes like it gives him a second because she has to kind of
Starting point is 01:20:16 collect herself so he like takes off and starts running and it seems like maybe the kind of gun that has like are the bullets what is it called shot put or something like where the bullet hole is it'll explode not just like a single hole it like kind of almost explodes inside and so it like tears that is like shotgun shot it's like they shoot a bunch of little yeah that's what right that is like a thing with a shotgun i don't know anything about guns but i do know that that's the thing with a shotgun yeah it's not like a clean gunshot it's like it basically is like his shoulder looks like it explodes yeah yeah he is not having a good time even though it's just a shoulder shot he's like yeah struggling and i
Starting point is 01:20:58 think this is where he he's like running but he is bleeding so much that he takes his shoe off and his sock to like use it as like a tourniquet because she's following his blood trail he like doesn't want to he he is trying to lose her so yeah he's like does oh yeah it's hard i was like wanting to take notes but i also would get so absorbed and then i'm like yeah i need to remember where certain things happened yeah no it's it is it's tricky but also i feel like her hair in this movie starts blonde and by now it's like dark brown because it's soaked in blood and dirt yes i love that too because she just truly looks like a brunette at
Starting point is 01:21:38 this point yes i because i was surprised because i had seen the poster this movie has a great poster i had seen the poster so many times where she looks like a brunette. And so I was very surprised in the beginning of the movie the first time I watched it, like, oh, she's blonde. I thought she was going to be a brunette. And then as it went, I was like, oh, yeah, it's really cool because it's gradual enough. Like you don't see it, but then you're just like, yeah, she just looks like a different person now. Yep. And he then sort of gets the jump on her he goes around a corner and hides as she's chasing him and then she ends up like farther ahead of him and he shoots her in the ear and that like iconic earring now like's like chasing after her uh shooting at her she's running and
Starting point is 01:22:30 then this is another real cool move she's got she's full of cool ideas she has a flashlight in the kit and she like hits it against the like rock face of the mountain or i don't know what you call things but you know she like smashes it and so leaves these shards of glass and he's chasing her but he's shoeless on one foot and so as he runs after her he steps right in it and he screams not unlike yours right now and he just like you know falls over like grabbing his foot and he stops and like tries to get the glass out it's really a huge incision from this piece of glass it's so deep and they really take their time showing him like wiggling his finger and like being like oh it hurts too much so he pulls away and then he has to psych himself up more and like press in further in his foot screaming and screaming yep it's a it's if you're squeamish like that is a tough scene
Starting point is 01:23:30 yeah that's i don't i don't like that it goes on for a while and i read this didn't occur to me at the time but like the way that the gore looks i don't know how to say this without sounding like a misogynist but that kind of looks like a vagina. It does look very vaginal. Yeah. It's just like a vertical slit in his foot. Just in his foot. It's a vagina.
Starting point is 01:23:56 Great. It's a vagina. And he's having to reach in to dig out the thing that is causing him pain. So once again, it feels a bit like. On the nose, but also i love it yes exactly like hell yeah yeah yeah like this is what you deserve um and he finally gets it out and that's funny because he's so you can feel the joy of like getting the piece out but he's also still like bleeding and in pain and he gets in his car like i'm gonna fucking run this bitch over he gets
Starting point is 01:24:22 in his car to go after her and every time he presses on the gas you just see the blood like gushing out of his foot it feels so painful i feel like i could drive with my other foot if i needed to i would absolutely be pressing the gas with yeah why why that foot i feel like sometimes i've even gotten where my leg just feels tired and I'll like pull it up and switch feet. Yeah, let's get the other leg in there just for... I've done that a little bit. You're not supposed to, but... We all get arrested for this. Yeah. Yeah, they find us. But he doesn't think to use the other foot. And I mean, look, maybe the adrenaline and he's like,
Starting point is 01:25:02 yeah, gotta get her. And he just is trying to run her over. He's going so fast that it looks like he might just like fly off. Yeah. But he doesn't. He's doing a good job and she's got the gun aimed at him. And then finally she gets him just like straight through the windshield and the car stops. Good job.
Starting point is 01:25:21 Wow. Once again, I do feel like his head kind of explodes. There's just like a big burst of blood because these bullets aren't... They're not fucking around. Some interesting happened with those bullets. Yeah. Luckily, it must have like just missed, like just been to the side of her ear for like
Starting point is 01:25:38 the pieces of it. Yeah. Because it doesn't seem like she has a head injury. She does like fall and you hear the like high pitched shriek of like when you're hearing goes for a minute, but otherwise it didn't, it didn't ruin her. No.
Starting point is 01:25:53 Okay. Great. Great. Great. And then we're with Richard who can't reach anyone. And this is also a weird day night thing, but it looked so cool that I'm not even mad at it where he's like, he gets on his motorcycle and he's wearing a helmet
Starting point is 01:26:05 and I guess it's like the red lights from the bike and he looks kind of like the scary bug with like red light on his face. Yeah. It's a really cool shot, but I don't know why it's night. It is just nighttime for just this shot. Yeah. Which like, it does look cool,
Starting point is 01:26:24 but I was like, are they so far away that he had to drive through the night which i don't think they are i wonder either what i mean is it this summer is this a place in the world where night is very very very short this i mean it couldn't be that short but perhaps nights are very short this time of year yeah let's just say let's give it that yeah i like that or it's a metaphor because it's his dark night of the soul there we are that's it but either way we've we figured it out it makes sense we figured it out yep yeah totally logical he gets back to the house he jumps in the pool with his like cool motorcycle jacket and his whole outfit and he calls the helicopter to
Starting point is 01:27:05 basically say everyone else left and i'm ready to go um and i think again he's like he'll actually be there in 30 minutes unlike in the beginning when he lied yeah and he goes to shower and smartly brings his gun to the shower this is a one one shot a oneerer. Oh my God. It's like five minutes long. It's really great. And yeah, you just see him showering again. Like you see him completely naked and he's completely naked for the whole rest of the movie and like framed in a way that's not shying away from it.
Starting point is 01:27:40 And I just love it. I love it. I sometimes push back on one-ers because sometimes it feels like a gimmick and it like can take away. And this. You're doing it to do it. Yes. Just so you can say that you did it.
Starting point is 01:27:52 And this like absolutely works so well. Yep. It's so tense. Like I'm on the edge of my seat this whole time and it's really like taking its time, but it feels, it's so earned because you're like, we're at the big bad now, you know, we want this. Oh, it's really like taking its time but it feels it's so earned because you're like yep we're at the big bad now you know we want this yeah oh it's so good and then he hears something he's definitely like on alert so he exits the shower he has his gun aimed he's like really ready and then he goes outside fully in the buff like you said he's kind of like stalking around the pool
Starting point is 01:28:22 and you see his peachy perfect perfect from a different planet ass. Little alien. Little alien ass. That's right. Not even different planet. Not out of this world. I just see a little alien. Peachy juicy.
Starting point is 01:28:35 It is a nice butt. And he doesn't see her. He's like looking all around the perimeter and he comes back inside. And he goes, I guess, to like sit down to have like a good view of everything in case she sneaks up he goes like to sit down with his gun and he sits on the remote and the tv turns on and he jumps up because he thinks that it's her and i don't know why this is so funny this is the role that i would want in this movie it's a shop club usa ad and it's like two it's like what's what's our what's the thing
Starting point is 01:29:05 called i can't remember what the likes that we have the thing oh like qbc yeah yeah yeah it's like qbc but it's called shop club usa or scusa which they keep saying over and over and i think it also like plays the rest of the movie yes just this like loud sales infomercially thing which you know only occurs to me now i guess the first two videos we saw are like stereotypically male and this is stereotypically feminine i got goosebumps why this it's so funny i was confused by this one as well but yeah that's like a channel for women like men don't't, for whatever reason, like watch QVC. Yeah, right. So they keep saying, you know, or MyScusa, MyScusa.com or whatever it keeps going.
Starting point is 01:29:52 But as he jumps and like realizes what's happened, he turns and like, is it the pink pain or the blue pain? I wonder. I don't remember. I think it's the blue pain. And actually, I didn't like think about that being significant until now we're really just discovering all the little pieces here on the fly i didn't think about the like male female of it till you said it so i like didn't even clock just that it was cool looking but i think it is the blue one right i think it's the
Starting point is 01:30:22 blue one she's now standing outside behind that blue panel. Gun pointed. She's got her gun right at him. Oh, it's so good the way it plays out because we're still in one take until we cut to the reverse of him. So, I mean, this is so like propulsive and frenetic, everything from here and it's so hard to capture but it
Starting point is 01:30:45 just it's like a wild chase where they both just have these guns because now she's shot him and he's injured but he's still like able to grab his gun and run and again losing so much blood there's blood everywhere
Starting point is 01:31:01 on the floor they're running like through the halls so she shot him through the pane of glass yes and i think it hits him in the same spot where oh yes it does yeah okay cool and he yeah he is bleeding for sure and they're chasing each other around i i have like a few moments that i'll like dog year of the chase that i think are great but if i skip anything that you love please yep chime in but there's one part where she finally like catches up to him she's like it's like a bit labyrinthine labyrinthine labyrinthian whatever like a labyrinth and she like is like about to turn a corner and you see him at that corner like ready for her with his gun aimed oh there we go oh my god he's naked i forgot
Starting point is 01:31:53 he's naked and covered in blood he is butt naked oh my gosh i love this shot so much that was so fast good work oh and she's like tiptoeing she knows he's like somewhere but doesn't know where and she's starting to step forward and then finally like her foot's in the air as she's about to take a step forward and enough blood pools at his feet and starts to drip towards her that she sees the blood and she steps oh my god great great and so she goes around the other way to get to him but he realizes what's happened to like just in time he sees the blood and he goes to move um that was like one of my favorite moments and this chase is still on but he's bleeding so much that he goes he starts like throwing a bunch of shit around to find saran wrap which he then pulls out and just saran wraps around his wound
Starting point is 01:32:45 to keep from bleeding out. Not as cool as the phoenix. Not as cool as the phoenix. That's right. Very true. And she hears the clanging, so she goes in that direction. And then we're like back in this wild chase. And as Sammy said, there is so much blood that part of you wants someone to slip because
Starting point is 01:33:07 the floor is just like covered it's like a slip and slide a blood slip and slide oh it's so bloody and she's chasing him and then she does she slips in the blood and i love the way they play it it's not just one simple slip it's like she falls and as she tries to get back up she's still just slipping because there's so much blood and there was and then a part where she she shoots they like uh have they're like close together and they're shooting at each other and she hears that he shoots so many times that he's now out of bullets so that's what like gives her this she's like going for him now and that's when she slips and so i didn't even clock that oh that's awesome yes and so he catches up to her but he doesn't have bullets in his gun so he just knocks her in the head with the butt of the gun
Starting point is 01:33:57 that makes so much sense i didn't know why he didn't just shoot her yeah i was like maybe he just wants to do it with his bare hands kind of a thing right yeah he like knocks her out with the butt of his gun and she comes to and he's like strangling her and this stuff is a bit on the nose but it's still satisfying where he's kind of like you know who do you think you are you thought you could win against me and then he says that was possible when i offered you to leave but you had to put up a fight women always have to put up a fucking and then as he's saying the word fight she digs her hands into his saran wrap wound yes and he screams and drops her and then she like reaches for the gun points it at him they lock eyes and she pulls the trigger and he's done. Great.
Starting point is 01:34:45 And the house is drenched in blood. Where's the helicopter? Where's the helicopter? It's so like pristine and beautiful at the top, much like her hair. It's like she goes from being blonde. It goes from this like white house to this red house of blood.
Starting point is 01:35:00 And yeah, she goes out, walks to the edge of the pool and we hear the helicopter and we get the title Revenge. Oh my god! God. Hell yeah. We don't often get a movie that leaves me with more energy than I started with.
Starting point is 01:35:23 Oh good. Whenever it happens, i'm so grateful this one falls firmly in the camp of competent victim which is we love that we love it when someone is just like i'm fucking better than you you thought that you could fucking kill me i will fucking kill this shit out of you instead and there's nothing I love more in a horror movie than that. So very satisfying. It's weird. I feel like it's kind of a feel-good movie
Starting point is 01:35:51 which is weird. Yeah. I saw some reviews being like this is just like relentless and brutal the whole time. And I'm like, I think it's so fun. Also like horror movies are that way. Like welcome to the whole fucking genre. Watch for.
Starting point is 01:36:07 Yes. And it weirdly feels pretty, aside from certain things not feeling believable, like her being impaled and going on to fight without one sip of water for however long this was. Just beer. It's a good beer ad. But the way in which she kills. The three men all feel pretty realistic. Like it doesn't feel like she becomes. This.
Starting point is 01:36:35 Completely different superhuman person. It's like she's struggling. And it doesn't look easy. But she just. Is smart and makes. has nothing to fucking lose good decisions and has nothing to lose and yeah so they each each scenario feels plausible in terms of like her getting the upper hand on these absolutely bad men it's never really the way that you expect it to be. Like she gets the gun on Dimitri, but it's not loaded. And then like she shoots at Stan, but it doesn't kill him, you know?
Starting point is 01:37:12 And you think he's going to like drive off the road and he doesn't. Like and same here. She has the gun pointed at him, but it's not enough to kill him on the first shot. And then you get this like insane chase. And it does feel really earned. I didn't clock the thing about the bullets, but that makes much sense i don't know how i missed that yeah i she like hears i might not have caught it the first time but yeah i saw i noticed it this time and it um yeah it gives her that like moment of here's my window where she just like runs at him which kind
Starting point is 01:37:43 of also speaks to that male confidence where he's like not even being conservative with bullets he's like i'm just gonna fucking shoot until i get the bitch and it's like you're underestimating her even after she's killed your two friends while severely injured yep continuing to i gotta say i feel like it's set up perfectly for a sequel that's just a really upsetting courtroom drama. Where it's her, it's the ants. The ants are there.
Starting point is 01:38:15 The ants deserve revenge. They do. I want them to get their come up ants. Come up ants. Sorry. And she said she wasn't used to stand up anymore that would go over so well write that one down write that one down okay so there's a movie where i do the whole podcast
Starting point is 01:38:39 i really need an hour and a half for this set for this one joke just the joke Avital, thank you so much oh my gosh, thank you that was fantastic it was such a good one this was a real good one I'm very happy you picked this one, this was great
Starting point is 01:38:59 thank you, thanks for being on board with me and for helping me find all these new layers. We helped each other. Together. We did. Together we found those layers. There's a lot of exploration happening, which is just really exciting. It's really beautiful.
Starting point is 01:39:15 I do wonder why the fixation with insects, like what the spiders and the ants mean. I don't really know. Maybe it's about just viewing them as vulnerable small and like insignificant you know yeah yep yeah right like she's sort of an insect to them too right as disposable pee on her till she dies exactly yeah oh yeah there it is we all did it we did it we found it um god this was so fun i'm really excited that we did it and i'm glad you guys liked it and if you i wonder if you'll ever watch it or even just like that last scene or that actually i do kind of want to watch it i do i don't i don't
Starting point is 01:39:59 but maybe 8 a.m on a sunday Sunday when I'm 56 years old. Check in with me. Oh, interesting. Okay, yeah. Put it down. We will check in with you. We'll circle back. I do feel like that last scene is less scary.
Starting point is 01:40:16 Like if you just watch the end. A, because you know she's going to win. B, because he's naked the whole time. So there's something funny and like vulnerable. And it's not gory like the other parts of the movie. Yeah last part sounds like i could definitely do it it's great and the eyes are the two parts that i'm like i don't know but the last 10 minutes i wonder if it's also 10 um from when she says if you don't call the helicopter i'm gonna call your wife and tell her everything i'm pretty sure that's her last line in the movie.
Starting point is 01:40:46 She doesn't speak for the whole rest of the movie. Oh, fuck yeah. Wow, yeah. Don't you want to see her call his wife, too? There's part of me that just wants to see that. We'll get that in the courtroom drama sequel. I like to imagine she shows up at his house just like this.
Starting point is 01:41:07 I gotta say. Covered in blood. Covered in blood, just shows up. This is continuing my theory that all horror movies should have sequels in a different genre. Sometimes they're rom-com. Sometimes it's a courtroom drama. Wouldn't you love to see a sequel
Starting point is 01:41:24 of this? There's more story here. Definitely. There's's a courtroom drama. Like, wouldn't you love to see a sequel of this? Yeah. There's more story here. Definitely. There's more story to tell. I wonder, like, there's even a world, well, this is against your different genre idea. This is just the horror pitch is there's a world where, like, the wife knows. See? And.
Starting point is 01:41:39 There you go. And maybe we didn't see the part of the conversation where he's like, it went south and I had to kill her. And she's like, that's okay. Back to the communion and the menu. And so maybe she's villainous, too, but probably not. You never know. Women are women are only good.
Starting point is 01:41:54 Exactly. Never a bad thing. Again, that's part of what I love is like she's not I wouldn't say she's a bad person, but she's not necessarily a good person. She's actively engaging in this affair with a married man but like that's okay you still don't you still don't rape someone i mean i think that people like implicitly or imply that it's okay like someone might be deserving of something if they're not like a madonna perfect like you said yeah like she's not like uh or virgin mary sorry yeah yeah right that's yeah and it feels very intentional for her to not be that type of character yeah to prove that point wonder if she is supposed to be a sex worker uh there is i think because of
Starting point is 01:42:42 i got that impression one when he transfers a bunch of money to her, like already having her banking information. But, and then when Stan gives her his card and is like, maybe we could do something sometime. Yeah. That is what it seems like. Kind of gave the impression of like him assuming that. He can buy her. Yeah. yeah yeah but it's unclear at least they're treating her that way whether or not that is her understanding of the arrangement yeah right because she does say i'm not sure with my job and then he says oh so you're a
Starting point is 01:43:18 fucking politician right but it doesn't say what her job is but again it like can also like uh can't rape a sex worker either like exactly she can be a sex worker and and that still doesn't mean you get to do sex to anyone who wants it yeah yeah yeah yep so i yeah i do really like the decision to make her character not a perfect angel yes yes i agree oh that's so good wow um well obviously will you tell our listeners where they can find you and what you've got going on yes i'm at avital ash on twitter and tiktok and instagram i don't know why I led with Twitter. I don't really use it. X? Yeah, X. That's right.
Starting point is 01:44:09 Find me on X. The Real Avitalash on YouTube, which I also don't really use, but I forgot my login, so I had to make a second one. So it's The Real Avitalash.
