Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a HeadGum Podcast. This episode was originally recorded as a bonus episode in October 2022. We will be back next week with a new episode. So for now, please enjoy this episode. This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch. Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, bonus episode on Halloween! Halloween! Happy Halloween, everybody. Happy Halloween.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Hey, everyone. Happy Halloween. Happy Halloween. Oh, exciting stuff. Have you guys seen any spooky Halloween costumes roaming the streets in LA? Have you seen any fun ones? I'll tell you.
Starting point is 00:01:06 I'll tell you what I saw today. So I saw a lot of goddamn Halloween costumes today. There was a little kids party in the park across the street from us. And I've never seen so many children in my life. And the thing about Halloween is kids and adults get dressed up. So it was like everyone was dressed up. And the prevalence of those blow up costumes. The blow up costumes are so wild.
Starting point is 00:01:30 People love those. So, okay. But like the creativity there, you know, in Fantasia, the elephants with the tutus that dance. Okay. There I saw there was one of those, which was really making me laugh. Somebody had to manufacture that. And I'm not imagining that's a really sought after. I know. But the best one was there was a woman who had a shark one on and they were blasting music in this park and they were playing Billie Eilish.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And this shark was just dancing so aggressively to Billie Eilish like alone. And all the kids are loving it and it was like i was like what is happening this is so crazy um but it's really cute and i don't know it's just i love seeing everyone else's costumes it's so much fun to see how creative people are. I haven't seen any and I forgot that that was even really a possibility. I guess in LA it doesn't happen as
Starting point is 00:02:34 often. It's not like a place you could go. Do you know what I mean? I think I'm tucked away enough that I don't really get trick-or-treaters, but that would be cute if I did. But I don't have any candy, enough that i don't really get trick-or-treaters but that would be cute if i did but i don't have any candy so hopefully i don't just disappoint them and that would break my heart we're gonna go trick-or-treating with um our our mutual friend we all have this friend who has a child and that i'm excited for because i do like to i like to be out and do it because
Starting point is 00:03:02 then you like see the kids who walk by you and you like see the little families. And also I get to like, you know, eat some of her candy because she's a fucking baby. She doesn't know. She definitely doesn't know. She's too little. She's way too little. She won't even know. She doesn't even know what's good.
Starting point is 00:03:16 I'll convince her all the worst candies are the best ones. And then I'll take the good ones for myself. Yeah. You're like, oh, you love Mike and Ike's. Oh, Mike and Ike's. my goodness those are your favorite yeah yeah you love those also there's like no way a two-year-old can eat mike and ike's right like with that but i'll keep you guys posted for what what good ones i see i'm excited to see some some funny little costumes i can't wait i truly can. But you know what I really can't wait
Starting point is 00:03:46 for? I have an idea. Hearing about this movie. Oh my God. Yeah, we didn't even freaking say what it is but I think you guys know. Well, you guys wanted a super scary one that really won by a landslide. We asked if you wanted Hocus Pocusers
Starting point is 00:04:02 or a scary one. Not scary, which I guess that is sort of the whole point that is sort of the whole thing that's fair I beg to differ but I came really close to watching martyrs and
Starting point is 00:04:17 doing martyrs I'm so glad it wasn't martyrs I am not prepared for martyrs but it's so funny because so what we so what we will be recapping today is Smile and there's like a big part of me that would rather watch Martyrs than Smile. I know.
Starting point is 00:04:33 You did not want to do this. It scares me more because I saw a review that just called it Jump Scare the movie and I hate a jump scare. So I cannot relax in a movie where I know that there are jump scares. So I basically watched this whole movie with my whole body tense the whole time because I don't know when the jump scares are coming. So I'm just like somebody said there's a lot of them.
Starting point is 00:04:53 So I'm constantly braced. Whereas if it's like a torture porn movie, you're just in it. I just like I kind of know what I'm in for and I know what's going to happen and I can relax. Okay. It's torture happen and i can relax okay okay it's torture porn i can relax i can just sit back and relax kick my feet up i know what's gonna happen it's because you can adapt you can adapt to a torture porn but you can't adapt yes it's like normalizes it's like when i went to see a surgery in 11th grade for my anatomy and physiology class that is like the body's already cut open so it's like okay well i'm in i'm in it yeah it's like jarring at first and then you're like all right well now i now i get it and that's what torture porn is like as well but smile is just yep i can yep. I can't relax.
Starting point is 00:05:45 I can't relax. I can't have fun. Oh, boy. Wow. You really, you really did a big favor to us all. A big Halloween treat for us. Halloween miracle. It's a Halloween miracle.
Starting point is 00:05:58 You know miracles happen on Halloween. You're Halloween Santa. It's just funny because I now think in it like made me question my role in the podcast at in the theater watching this film where i was like probably i feel like one of the most scared people in the theater i was sitting next to these two like 14 year olds that were just like laughing having a great time i don't understand not being affected by jump scares it's like literally it's like manufactured to make you tense and then jump like how how can you not like it's like getting hit with one of those
Starting point is 00:06:30 things on your knee that doctors do your reflex thing where it's like like you were gonna jump and here's the thing here's the thing is that actually a jump scare that truly catches me off guard, I do enjoy. And so if I'm watching something... You just don't want to know what's coming. Yes. So if someone says this movie's filled with jump scares, then that's not going to be a fun time for me. But a movie with one good, effective jump scare that really catches me off guard is
Starting point is 00:07:01 like fun because it's just a little jolt of adrenaline and i'm not like tensed waiting for it the entire time yeah yeah yeah so so you weren't having fun i really this was a tough one for me but oh man i did like it and i think i'd like it more upon a second watch knowing now where all the jumps, I was tempted to like do what we, the service we provide to others. I was tempted to try to like Google it first and be like, where are these jumpscares going to be so that I can know when to be stressed and when to relax.
Starting point is 00:07:36 But that's what we're going to provide for you. So if you feel the same way as me and you could see this movie, knowing where all the jump scares are, that's what we're gonna do for you here from today halloween santa halloween santa my favorite santa um smile was written and directed by parker flynn starring zosie bacon jesse t usher kyle gallner and cal. It's in theaters now. 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, 68% on Metacritic, 6.9% on IMDb.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Nice. Nice. Nice. And the budget was $17 million. So far, it's made $186 million. Wow. Wow. It was going to go straight to VOD. But it did better in a test screening than expected.
Starting point is 00:08:31 And so they decided to release it in theaters. And it's just crazy to think that they almost didn't. They wouldn't have $1 million on the fucking table. They would have lost a lot of money in that. People like to see a scary movie in theaters in Halloween times. Come on. Come on. Come on. And Sosie Bacon
Starting point is 00:08:52 is Kevin Bacon and Keira Sidgwick's daughter. Wow. Incredible. I want her and Maya Hawke to be best friends. That'd be cool Don't you feel like it's like a similar vibe? I didn't know that at all
Starting point is 00:09:09 But now that I do know it I can very much see it Oh that's fun That's really fun And yeah it's exciting I love Kevin Bacon and Keira Sedgwick What a great couple Aren't they just like one of those good, solid couples that makes you feel like...
Starting point is 00:09:26 They're a good couple. Like love is real. Yeah, happy and like believe in love. Exactly. Wow. Yeah, I really do see it now. Wow. This is really exciting.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Okay. Wow. Okay. I can't wait. I've wanted... I was so glad this movie ended up being good and people wanted to hear about it. People wanted to see it because every time I saw the trailer, I was so glad this movie ended up being good And people wanted to hear about it Because every time I saw the trailer I was desperate to know
Starting point is 00:09:48 What happens but I was never going to see it You get it the whole point of the thing And I can't freaking wait To hear about it I'm so excited Okay I've seen this trailer I'm ready to see it again This is it
Starting point is 00:10:04 I'm scared Let's seen this trailer I'm ready to see it again This is it I'm scared I'm scared Let's watch this trailer What is it you like to talk about I'm patient Hi I know you're nervous I just want to have a chat I'm seeing something no one else can see
Starting point is 00:10:24 Except for me. It's smiling at me. No! Oh, my God! No! Yesterday, a patient in your care died brutally in front of you. I need to find an explanation for what happened. It's smiling at me.
Starting point is 00:11:18 It's smiling at me. You're going to die! You're going to die! You're going to die! You're going to die! I found 20 cases involving 19 victims with a direct line linking them all together. You said only 19. Why is it that everybody else who's seen it is dead and you're alive? I've seen it too. You?
Starting point is 00:11:42 Get her away from me! How long between each victim's death? You. You? Get her away from me! How long between each victim's death? None of them survived longer than a week. Rose! Today's my fourth day. I am not gonna keep running. I have to face it. How does that make you feel?
Starting point is 00:12:02 Not bad. Does it make you feel? I'm just really scared that something bad is going to happen. Okay. Okay. okay okay that's enough we're finally doing it we're finally doing it oh my god that was worse than i remembered oh oh my god it looks pretty nasty stuff in there so scary and i get to know what happened. I get to know, I get to know, I get to know. Oh my god, oh my god. Sammy, thank you so much. Let's do it, let's do it.
Starting point is 00:12:54 Let's do it. Okay, okay, okay. I also will say that I movie hopped into this movie. This was my second film of the day yesterday. And the first movie I watched was After Sun, which was like so beautiful. And so I cried through like the first 20 minutes of style. Just because I was still like in a very emotional place. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:13:20 That's an interesting state to enter. It was a very, really sad very like a funny whiplashy moment where i just two very different experiences feeling really fragile and so things in smile were making me cry that should not have been making me cry oh it's a very funny. I had space to be in it. But OK, let's recap it. And I will give the old regular disclaimer that it may not be perfect because I just saw it in theaters yesterday. But I shall do my best. Here we go. Okay, we begin on a woman's face who is dead in her bed with vomit
Starting point is 00:14:08 coming out of her mouth. She is clearly overdosed. At this point, you're still crying. Yeah, I'm still crying. And we... The camera rotates and we see a young girl in the doorway looking at this dead woman, assuming that this is her daughter. And then Zosie Bacon wakes up in her office.
Starting point is 00:14:37 And the implication being that this is her dream, that this was her past. Finding her mom dead. That's awful. Overdosed. that this was her past um finding her mom dead that's overdosed uh so c bacon's name is rose she is clearly a workaholic she works at a emergency psychiatric hospital and she gets a call and someone they bring someone in named Carl, a man that's clearly been in a few times before. They all know him. It's Carl again. And he's shaking and talking to himself and saying, I'm going to die. She's going to die. My mom's going to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. They're going to die. I'm going to die. And Rose is really kind to him and good with him it's clear that she
Starting point is 00:15:28 really cares about her patients and she's like carl it's me it's rose like how are you it's gonna be okay and he's she she says i think you're in a in a manic state again like i know this feels really real to you right now, but it's not. And it's it's like going to be it's going to get better. And we're going to keep you here for a couple of days and it's going to be OK. And so she gets him all checked in into a room in the hospital and she's then called into her boss's office. And she's then called into her boss's office, who's mad at her for doing something for a patient that the insurance wouldn't cover. And it's basically just hammering home the point that she really cares about her patients. It's not about money for her.
Starting point is 00:16:17 And he's like, this is like losing the hospital money if you keep doing things like this. And she just she cares too much. She cares too much. And he says, have you been here since the night shift last night we saw her wake up in her office so again hammering home she's a workaholic loves this job and she's uh about to clock out and head home when she gets another call another patient just arriving and it's clear that she's like i don't know if excited is the right word but like she wants a reason to stay
Starting point is 00:16:53 and continue to keep working so she puts her little doctor coat back on and goes and meets this next patient that's coming in this is laura and she's they bring her into this like room where it's just the two of them talking as she's evaluating laura i think she gets some information right beforehand that laura about a week ago had a professor kill himself in front of her he killed himself with a hammer jesus christ yikes yikes yikes and so rose goes to sit down with laura who looks really like she's not doing well she's also similarly rocking back and forth and like, Matt's just the girl from the trailer. Yeah. Talking to herself and Rose is saying like, it's okay.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Like, I know what you're experiencing right now, like feels really real to you, but it's like, we can get you on some medication. And Laura says to her, like, I'm not fucking crazy.
Starting point is 00:18:04 I'm a PhD student. What's happening to me is real. Something is going on. I'm seeing something that nobody else can see. And Rose asks her to describe it to her. And she says, sometimes it's a stranger. Sometimes it's my grandpa that I saw die. Like it comes in different forms and it's, it's just smiling at me, but it's not a nice smile. It's the scariest smile I've ever seen. Oh God.
Starting point is 00:18:35 And it's smiling at me. Jesus Christ. This is a very like, um, it follows e-premise. I feel like that's a lot of the complaints people have had.
Starting point is 00:18:51 It's just like it follows but worse. But hey, it follows isn't a bad movie to copy. Come on. If it's good and fun, who cares? So Rose is trying to she's trying to help laura and and figure out what's going on and she's like okay um uh and then something happens
Starting point is 00:19:17 where all of a sudden laura is stumbling backwards off her chair as if something else is in the room with them that moment. She is screaming, freaking out, and basically saying, no, no, no, no. Rose jumps up, grabs the phone off the wall, saying, like, we need help in here. We need help. And she turns back around and we see Laura now standing, staring at her with a big smile on her face. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. There it is. There it is. And in the
Starting point is 00:19:53 whatever, as she fell backwards, she knocked over a flower vase, so there's shattered porcelain in the room and we see that she is holding a big chunk of it in her hand smiling and she is just locked eyes with rose and raises that porcelain to her ear basically and with the big smile on her face the whole time slits like slices down her cheek under her chin and back up to the other ear
Starting point is 00:20:28 so making basically a smile shaped uh cut through her face it's pouring blood it shows the whole thing it's so bloody she's not shows everything it shows everything she's not flinching and she just she drops the porcelain afterwards and she for a moment continues to just smile very big at rose before she falls and dies from no thanks i assume i assume thanks and and meanwhile little silent tears are coming out of rose's eyes and we cut to title card smile in the past few years i have hit a point where i only want to be wearing clothes that are comfortable it happened it happened to me but you know what i still also want to look cute and these are two desires that are often extremely opposing. And I don't want to have to sacrifice. I want both. I want comfort and I want to feel cute and confident. And guess what? Skims has freaking done it again with their soft lounge collection.
Starting point is 00:21:38 I am currently very, very obsessed with, I have the soft lounge tank and boxer set. Okay. This tank, it's a great little rib tank. Classic. You can wear it every day. You can pair it with jeans. You can wear it out in the world, or you can wear it with this little boxer short that is so comfortable. It is super, super soft, lightweight rib. They're great. I also truly have been for years stealing Joel's boxer briefs to wear as sleepwear and loungewear. And guess what? That ain't cutting it. I'm not feeling too cute in those. I'm not feeling too comfortable. But Desperate Times, however, Desperate Times know more because Skims has done it. You too can get on board with this.

Starting point is 00:23:36 off your first order. Don't forget that's hellobello.com slash too scary. Really loud title popping on. Jump scare. Yep. Wait, I'm confused though. Do they kill themselves? Do they always slit their throat? Because that's the point because they're smiling? Or do they kill themselves? I know, I know. We're going to find out.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Oh my god. They probably do what's available to them. Oh my god. I hate I hate slitting at the throat. Oh, I hate it. I hate it. It's not good. No, I really don't like it. I feel like we've talked about it before. It sounds like it would be so hard
Starting point is 00:24:14 to do. It would be so hard. It would be really hard. No one's talking about how hard that would be. I know. That's a really tough way to go. So, okay. Then we see the cops arrive later to we see like slow motion shot of the other hospital people running in and and Rose very clearly in shock. And. Two detectives arrive to interview her about what just happened, and one of them, she sees as they're walking in and they wave at each other. So it seems like they already know each other. But then when they come in, they don't act like they know each other. So they're just interviewing her. And the other guy is being very unsympathetic and very cruel about just people with mental health problems in general and being like, yeah, she's a basket case, right? Like, we basically just need you to confirm that she's
Starting point is 00:25:08 crazy and that's what happened. And Rose is getting very irritated by this, obviously. And but they ask, you know, what do we tell her family? And she tells them, you know, she was smiling. I don't, I don't know what to tell you. Like she was just smiling the whole time. And maybe don't tell her family that. She's still in shock. She doesn't know what she's doing.
Starting point is 00:25:37 What should you tell her family? The worst thing I've ever seen. She was loving it. She loved it. She loved every second. She was having a really good time. Her last moments. She was loving it. She loved it. She loved every second. She was having a really good time. Her last moments. She was loving it. She loved it.
Starting point is 00:25:50 But so they finished interviewing her and she goes home, obviously really shaken. She has a beautiful home and a very cute cat, which we're all really concerned about immediately or at least I was um and she goes straight to that fridge pours herself the tiniest glass of wine as if it were
Starting point is 00:26:18 whiskey it's basically like one finger of wine or I'm like girl you just had someone commit suicide in front of you you need a bigger glass of wine than that Let's fill that up to the brim Also it's like the trope is like coming in And filling it to the brim it's very funny to be like Just splash
Starting point is 00:26:32 Well I think that's part of it kind of it's like she's like trying to be so Controlled you know it's like Oh I see she's scared of Losing control yeah also Her mom died of an overdose So perhaps she is worried about addiction. But so there'll be parts where she's like continually
Starting point is 00:26:49 pouring herself like one finger over and over. Tiny little glasses. That's funny. Okay, I like that. And it is freaky. It did make me laugh. And so she's in her kitchen and she sees Laura in the shadows like Laura in the shadows
Starting point is 00:27:06 like further in the hallway and she's staring and just sees Laura just smiling at her and then someone comes in the room and she drops her wine glass it scares her and it's her fiance Trevor has just come home
Starting point is 00:27:21 and she tells him that one of her patients died in front of her that day he's he hugs her and says like should we cancel dinner tonight we don't have to go and she's trying to minimize and being like no you know i'm fine it'll be a bit bigger deal if we don't go to dinner like holly will be pissed so we might as well just go so they go to dinner she puts on a happy face as if everything is just fine and this they're at dinner with her sister holly and her husband and they also are very rude about mental health problems in general and are like they say that Rose
Starting point is 00:28:08 should start her own private practice and the guy's like you can get like some crazy people to pay you a lot of money right like what's the point of being a doctor if you're not filthy rich which A like seems like they are already yeah they had a nice house
Starting point is 00:28:23 and B like I don't know well b that reminds me of how recently i was quoted twelve hundred dollars to see a psychiatrist oh my god that's an unfathomable amount of money can you imagine twelve hundred dollars for one session with the doctor oh my god that's so fucked up see my primary care physician thank you it's free it's 25 copay mental health care in this country is obviously um a terrifying twelve hundred dollars anyway yeah that's scary out there you guys that's scary out there that is very scary um but rose snaps at them in a way that's pretty impressive she likes this because you guys shut the fuck up and her and holly have a kind of a tense relationship holly's the older sister
Starting point is 00:29:20 and there's clearly some tension between them and holly mentions like you need to sell that old house mom's old house it's like gross and abandoned and we're in the back of our heads going abandoned gross old house will that come into play in the third act of this film perhaps and holly asks her to come to her son's birthday party on saturday and rose is like i work on saturdays again she loves her job she loves working and holly says well the least you could do is buy him a gift he really likes trains right now he really likes gifts i'm trying to say he least you could do is buy him a gift he really likes trains right now he really likes gifts i was gonna say he at least you could do is buy him a gift he likes gifts he likes presents he loves getting presents he likes when you spend money on him so uh the next day she goes back into work and
Starting point is 00:30:21 the cop that she seemed to know before is there and he kind of pulls her aside and is like hey i just wanted to check in on you after yesterday i didn't mean to when i got the call i didn't know that it was going to be you and they an ex lover yes that's clearly her ex because she's like you don't need to check in on me anymore like we're not together anymore and uh his name's joel oh no oh my god i rarely get a character named joel i don't know if we can go on i'm gonna be too confused it's gonna be really confusing that joel it's a different Joel. Just keep reminding me. Okay. You say so. And yeah, she's annoyed with him and says, I don't need you to check in on me.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Like, I'm fine. And so he leaves and she goes to continue on her rounds. And as she is walking with her little clipboard, she walks past the room in which she set up Carl. And he is sitting at the edge of his bed, sitting up so stick straight with a big old smile on his face. And she goes in to talk to him and is scared and looking worried. And it's like, Carl, are you OK? And he again says, I'm going to die. She's and he again says i'm going to die she's going to die we're going to die they're all going to die i don't want to die and then he but he's still looking straight ahead with a big smile on his face and she's like carl carl carl and then he
Starting point is 00:31:57 turns to her and looks at her in the eye and just starts saying you're going to die you're going to die and he's walking closer and closer to her and she calls out we need a 5150 security and as she's in the hallway yelling for help all these security guards run in and we see that he is asleep on the bed he was not awake and all these guards bust in and start restraining him and pinning him down. And he starts screaming, like not knowing what's happening and saying like, no, no, no. It's really upsetting. And she sees that as well. And she looks really upset.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Like, what the fuck just happened? Why? Why did I do that? And she gets called into her boss's office after that because the boss is like, Carl has never been a physical threat to anybody. God, this boss can go to hell. Sorry. No, it's good. I think that's good.
Starting point is 00:32:55 He's like saying, what did you do that for? Oh, I thought he was getting mad at her again. He's not getting mad at her, but he is questioning. He's concerned. Yes, her judgment in that moment. And he's saying you just witnessed someone commit suicide in front of you. And is it possible that you might have overreacted to this situation? Because you're still dealing with the trauma of that situation? Seems quite yeah and she agrees and she says yeah i think that's actually probably what happened and so he asks her to take a week off
Starting point is 00:33:33 he says i think it's important for for us one of the an important thing we can do for ourselves is to make sure our own mental health is in order before we help other people and like it's important for you to take this time off she reluctantly agrees she's driving home and she stops on the way home to buy a toy train for her nephew and as she is wrapping it at home it's nighttime now she's alone at home wrapping this gift and the house alarm starts going off it's jump scares very loud she jumps up and grabs the scissors that she was using for the wrapping paper and goes to check the front door it's closed it's locked nobody's there and she goes back to the table where she was wrapping and there's a sliding door right behind where she was wrapping and it's a sliding door no a sliding door no where's the cat find the cat where is the cat it's a great question well it's located and she's looking around doesn't understand if any what's going on it was that door open a second ago
Starting point is 00:34:49 and then the phone rings again the alarm is still blaring so loud and the phone is the security alarm people and it's a woman and she says can you give me your passcode she gives her the passcode and she says are you alone in the house she says yes and she says are you sure and Rose is quiet and the woman's voice says are you sure you haven't
Starting point is 00:35:20 let something in with you or something like that and then the phone rings again and it snaps or something like that and then the phone rings again and it snaps to and rose does not have the phone in her hand anymore it's back in the receiver ringing and she answers it again looking really confused and now it's the alarm people for real and they disarm the alarm and it cuts to some police outside and they've just done a sweep of the house trevor is arriving home at this moment too saying like what's going on and she explains some the alarm was off i the alarm was going off i don't i don't know i think someone might have been inside
Starting point is 00:36:01 but the cops are reassuring her we've've checked everything. There's nobody in there. But you can, you know, call us if anything happens. We will be back if you need us. And so she goes in now with they leave and she goes back inside with Trevor. And she starts saying, where's mustache? That's the cat's name okay okay okay she's pouring out the cat the wet food he's not coming she's like banging on the little tin can mean like mustache mustache and it's clear that she's getting she's uh really trying to seem totally fine still in front of Trevor.
Starting point is 00:36:49 She doesn't want Trevor to see that she is really scared or know that anything weird is going on with her. So she keeps going like, I'm fine, I'm fine. But like, have you seen mustache? Like, I'm just, where's mustache? You know, like, I just where's where's mustache you know like i just wish i where we knew her mustache was and she's not doing a great job acting normal but uh she'll be acting much less normal later okay okay okay um i feel like i might mess some stuff up in this in the old fun and games section because now it's just a series of little
Starting point is 00:37:28 scares I think the next day after this she goes to visit her old therapist who seems surprised to see her like I haven't seen you in a while and she's looking a little like maybe she hasn't
Starting point is 00:37:46 slept very well she's starting to get dark circles under her eyes and she's saying i think i just need a script for whatever this like i'm i had a patient commit suicide in front of me and i've been seeing things since then i've been seeing her face and i haven't been sleeping well and i think i just need that prescription and then and that's like that's all i need and the therapist looks uh very concerned and says what that sounds like a very traumatic experience how did that make you feel she She says, made me feel really scared, terrified and, and really guilty.
Starting point is 00:38:29 And she says, guilty. Talk about that. And she said, well, she was my patient. And the therapist says, you're patient.
Starting point is 00:38:36 It sounds like you just met her 10 minutes prior to that. And maybe some of that guilt might be related to the guilt about your mother that i feel like you've never fully addressed and that trauma and don't you think maybe that this is um dredging that up a bit rose does not want to talk about that she's like i'm not here to talk about that that's like a totally separate thing this isn't about that it's not about my childhood trauma it has nothing to do with that huge thing that's similar it has nothing to do that similar other huge thing and the therapist will not give her the prescription. She says, I think we should restart our regular sessions next week. We can see how you're doing then and revisit medication then. listening to a recording of her session
Starting point is 00:39:44 with Laura and in the space where Laura was seeing something and screaming there's like silent moments in between where you can kind of hear the sound of something breathing or something
Starting point is 00:40:00 and Laura's I mean Rose is like turning it up and leaning in closer she's got her headphones on and in this part I'm like my ears are plugged my eyes are basically closed so I might fuck this up because I was barely watching it
Starting point is 00:40:14 because it's just like so clear that something is about to happen and sure enough as she turns it up as loud as it can go Laura jumps at her from her side and just screams, Rose! And she falls out of her chair and turns and looks and nobody's there. And she's like broken another glass.
Starting point is 00:40:38 She breaks a few wine glasses in it. Aw. Ongoing thing. And she's just absolutely terrified. But goes to bed. Nothing. Nothing's there. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:40:50 These jump scares, man. Yeah. I don't like them. Yeah, that was a big one. Then next day, she goes to her nephew's birthday party because now she has the day off. And so she can actually make it. because now she has the day off and so she can actually make it and her sister is very like um uh preppy-ish like rich kind of housewife they have very different vibes and uh she goes in and the the sister holly like sets her up with her friends.
Starting point is 00:41:27 She's like, I got to finish making the hors d'oeuvres or whatever, like talk to my friends. And one of the friends is like, oh, you're the therapist, right? Like I need I need help. Let me ask you about something. It's just a funny thing to imagine being like, hey, any therapist will do here at a party. My friend's friend. Like, tell me what this means. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Interpret my dream. So then it gets to the point of the party where we're unwrapping presents. Which he loves. Doesn't matter what they are. Actually, to be honest with you guys, I remember very clearly at Christmas, I used to unwrap all my presents as fast as possible and then just burst into tears. I didn't even register what any of them were. It was just an exciting... Just knew you had presents and then you didn't. Yeah, that was a yearly tradition for a while. Just absolutely having a meltdown after i feel like christmas is unhealthy like i think it's a toxic holiday that we have because i think all children go through that and all parents go
Starting point is 00:42:32 through the pain of watching their children go through that and like not knowing how to rectify it because like so much work goes into like buying all those presents wrapping all of them and in the back of your head as a parent you're like they, they're going to be unhappy. Like no matter what I do, they're going to be unhappy. Yeah. Like it's just true. I know. I think we should get rid of Christmas. You know what? Fox News. War on Christmas. Emily hates Christmas. Kelly's against Christmas. It has nothing to do with the fact that it's also her birthday. That's irrelevant. That's irrelevant. Oh my God. Cherry picking information, Emily, from from the other side from the other side of the aisle
Starting point is 00:43:06 this is how it's going to work Emily you've got to prepare yourself they're going to come at you from all angles I think we should get rid of Christmas I hate it okay go on okay so they're unwrapping presents and then it comes to the time
Starting point is 00:43:22 where he is about to unwrap the present from rose and everyone's gathered around it's like you know 30 or so people and other little kids all watching him unwrap and he's unwrapping it and opens it and gets these wide eyes as he's looking at the gift and Rose is like looking confused like why is he looking like that and from the box he pulls dead mustache
Starting point is 00:43:51 no really worst case scenario she's like she likes presents but not like this no and Rose lunges forward grabs dead mustache and like cradles him and is like sobbing being like no no no no no no no and holly like runs and grabs her son and like pulls him
Starting point is 00:44:16 aside is like what the fuck is wrong with you and rose is like holding her dead cat and looking over at everybody being like no i didn't do that i didn't do that. I didn't do that. You have to believe me. You have to believe me. That wasn't me. Like, why would I do? I wouldn't do that.
Starting point is 00:44:29 I wouldn't do that. And everyone is obviously looking at her. Like she's absolutely insane. And she's turning around and like looking at everybody and being like, no, no, no, don't look,
Starting point is 00:44:38 don't fucking look at me like that. Don't look at me. It's not like that. And she sees sitting in one of the seats, the woman from earlier that asked her for therapy advice smiling at her really big. And she
Starting point is 00:44:53 says like, you, don't look at me. Why are you smiling at me? And we see that. Everybody else sees that. Nobody is in that specific chair. And she's like, where is she? Where is she? Can you guys see her? You guys don't see her. And then she turns around and it's a jump scare she where is she can you guys see her you guys don't see her and then she turns around and it's a jump scare she pops up in her face and
Starting point is 00:45:09 Rose falls backwards into the glass coffee table completely shatters it oh this is a really bad series of events completely shatters it slicing up all of her forearms it's like pouring blood out of her arms she holds her arms up with her
Starting point is 00:45:26 dead cat like still in her lap and just like it's like a really really intense five minutes that yeah it's a really worst case scenario for a child's birthday party I feel like
Starting point is 00:45:41 really of all the things that could have happened That's one of the worst Things got really bad really fast Honestly the only worst one I've heard of is the one from Parasite Oh yeah That was pretty bad That one's worse
Starting point is 00:45:56 But this one's up there And we cut to Trevor driving Rose home. Like, Collie clearly called Trevor and told her to come get her. And she's mumbling to herself. And they park. They get home and park the car. And she turns to Trevor.
Starting point is 00:46:18 She's like, I need to confide in you about this. And I need you to believe me. Like, I need you to believe me. Like, I need you to believe me. And he looks really scared of her as well. He's obviously been brought up to speed about what just happened. And she says, you know, this patient killed herself in front of me she said that people were smiling at her and now people are smiling
Starting point is 00:46:47 at me I don't know what it means but like I think whatever was happening to her is now happening to me I don't know if it's like a demon or an entity or something that's now attached itself to me he's looking at her like wide-eyed like
Starting point is 00:47:03 oh fuck my fiance is insane and He's looking at her like wide-eyed, like, oh, fuck, my fiance is insane. Right, right. And he basically is like, I don't know what you want me to say. Like, you need, I think you need help. Like, this isn't real. Like, what you're describing is crazy. And she gets really mad.
Starting point is 00:47:22 Sir, you're not, you don't have the training to to help her through this oh god but it's also like mirroring exactly what she always said like she's like i know it feels really real to you but it's not yeah i don't like it i know it is true it's like that's what they tell you like Like if you're having a. I know it's a really terrifying premise because what's the difference of it? If it if it is if it feels real to you. Right. Yeah. Then it is real.
Starting point is 00:47:59 Then it's real. And so it's so scary to imagine people having like mental breaks or psychotic breaks and like how fucking terrifying that is. Gotta be so scary. So he sleeps on the couch that night. They're in a fight. They're in a fight. She's pissed that he doesn't believe her. And he's like, I thought he was like you need
Starting point is 00:48:26 to be on your own no she's really angry at him and she's up in the bedroom and got her laptop out and she's looking at the report that she got about laura about the professor or that mentions the professor that killed himself in front of her so she's able to get his name from that report and she's googling him and finds his like his name and she's doing that when she hears something in the bathroom next to her bedroom and the lights are all off and it's framed in such a way that you just know someone's coming out of this doorway this pitch black doorway and she just turns the lights off in her room and rolls over in bed with her back to that door she's like i'm just not gonna be facing it honestly love that yeah at this point that's the move I feel like everybody knows that feeling
Starting point is 00:49:26 of just being like well I'm just going to hide under the blankies well I don't see it I don't see it and we hear it's a woman and it seems like a naked woman
Starting point is 00:49:43 and she's saying Rose, Rose mommy made a mistake oh no I don't like that and you just see Rose like scared in bed with her head under the covers
Starting point is 00:49:58 no I don't like that next day nothing happens that night that time next day, nothing happens that night. Okay, that time. Next day, she goes to the house. She tracks down the professor's widow's address and goes to talk to her about him and is asking what happened leading up to his death. If he had ever been suicidal before. And she said, no, it was like the week before something changed.
Starting point is 00:50:32 And he got so different so fast. And it all kind of started when someone killed themselves in front of him. There's a pattern emerging. Pretty clear pattern, I would say. Cops really should have been on to this by now. Haven't figured it out. Haven't figured it out. So Rose goes to Joel's house and says, I need your help.
Starting point is 00:50:57 Wait, my house? Yeah, I'm confused. Which Joel? Joel Jensen? She's in my house? Wait, I'm confused. Wait, I'm sorry. Back up, back up, back up, back up.
Starting point is 00:51:10 This was when? Was I not here? Why didn't Joel mention it? That's fucked up. What? And she asks him to look up the case of this woman that killed herself in front of the professor.
Starting point is 00:51:27 And he he's like reluctant about it. He says, my day off, Rose, I don't fucking do this. But he does. He eventually does. And he is very affected by the crime scene photos. We see they're very bloody and graphic and she says okay i need you to look up and see if she if there are any other police reports involving her and he checks and says oh that's weird someone killed themselves in front of her a week before and they
Starting point is 00:52:06 pull up the video and they had their security footage of her at a gas station and a man walking up to her and grabbing a pair of garden shears off a truck next to where she's parked and he takes the garden shears raises him above his head and fucking cuts his own face off and it's from the back so we don't see it but we just see like a spray of blood as the garden shears just go down vertically fucking hot dog style over his face oh my god What the fuck? And so it's clear now that this is a pattern, this little chain of events. This little smiley guy is really fucked up. Yeah. So Joel is like, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:53:00 What is this? Like, how how did you know that this was going to happen? She's like at this point, not really wanting to involve Joel. And so she says, can you just like print some of this stuff out for me? I got to go. And so he prints it out. Can you imagine print it out? You're like, sure.
Starting point is 00:53:17 Yeah. Here's all this crime scene information. And but it's like clear that she's like trying to take this home to trevor to be like see some this is like some amount of evidence of what is going on what's happening to me but as she arrives home trevor is there with her therapist and he says i called her because we're we're just really worried about you. And. I don't know. They're kind of trying to do some sort of intervention thing. And Rose is again. Very angry about this.
Starting point is 00:53:52 And. I think she just storms back out. And goes back to Joel's. And. He tells her that. He kept. After she left. He kept doing more research. And that it goes back and back and back.
Starting point is 00:54:07 And he said, I found 20 cases linked like this. And 19 of those people are dead. And she says, only 19. What is what do you mean? And one survived. His name is Robert Talley. And he murdered somebody. And he's now in prison.
Starting point is 00:54:23 And so she's like, we got to go. He survived his own suicide attempt? No, he did. He or no suicide attempt. But he murdered someone instead of killing himself. He killed someone else. Got it. So she's like, we need to go visit him.
Starting point is 00:54:38 I need to ask him some questions. So they go to the prison and talk to him. and it's just her and him in the room he won't talk with the cop there and she's saying to him like you know i have a friend who this is happening to you could really help her if you tell me what to do. And he basically says, yeah, you have to. The only way out is you have to kill somebody, but you have to kill somebody in front of somebody else. It needs a witness. It feeds on trauma. The more graphic and violent the death is, the better.
Starting point is 00:55:22 But someone has to be there to witness it so it can pass on to that person if you do it in private like it's not gonna it won't pass on and she says i can't kill anybody and he says it's you you have it and he freaks out and is screaming and he's like, get her away from me. Get her away from me. And they pull him back to his cell and she's crying and she leaves. And her and Joel are driving back home. And she's saying, how long did the people live? Or like how long until they died between when they saw the other person die?
Starting point is 00:56:08 And he says no one made it past seven days. A lot of people didn't make it past four days. She's on day four right now. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Not what you want to hear. No. Oh my god. Not what you want to hear. She then goes back to her sister's house to apologize I guess. And
Starting point is 00:56:33 the sister Holly comes out to talk to her on the porch. She won't let her in the house. She says you really traumatized whatever his name is. Which is very true imagine that fucking trauma he's gonna be nervous on his birthday for a long time he doesn't he's not gonna like opening gifts anymore he used to love gifts he loved it it was his favorite thing and you ruined that you're not gonna like it anymore you ruined that by giving him your dead cat
Starting point is 00:57:01 and so she's like i just really need to like, I just really need to talk to you. I really need to talk to you. Like, so she's like, okay. And Rose says, I'm just, I'm seeing clearly now that I'm cursed. Like I, it's a curse and I've been cursed and she's sounding a little manic now. She's like, I figured it out. Like all the pieces are together like they say i have to kill somebody but i'm not gonna kill somebody but i need to
Starting point is 00:57:30 figure out how to have it not kill me holly's looking at her looking like very sad and scared and basically says you know you sound um just like mom and and rose says how the fuck would you know? You weren't there. And Holly is clearly defensive about this and says, you know, I got the worst of it when you were little. That's why I had to leave. And like, I'm sorry I left you there. And I feel guilty about that. And like the fact that you had to find her.
Starting point is 00:58:00 Like, I know that really fucked you up. But like, I got plenty of shit also. And like, that's why I had to leave. And i know that really fucked you up but like i got plenty of shit also like that's why i had to leave and they get this big fight and she's like you're clearly not well and i can't have you at my house when you're like this you need to get help you can't be around my family like this and she goes inside closes the door and Rose gets back in her car, and she's crying. the driver's side window to talk to rose again knocks on the window and rose turns and looks and holly's head rotate like flips off of her body and it's got a big smile and like drops down in the window and it's another big jump scare no but then the second she reacts to it it's gone holly wasn't really out there. Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:59:09 But Rose just starts screaming and screaming and screaming in her car. And you see her nephew in the window watching her. And I'm just like, this poor fucking kid is just going to be really traumatized. Oh, my God. She goes back home. She's going through the files and like trying to piece things together, figure things out. And she sees the therapist comes over. She sees her through like the glass floor ceiling windows to the front door. She like quickly puts away all of her little murder crime scene photos. She's like, oh, fuck, she can't see this and opens the door. The therapist comes in and says, what are you doing here?
Starting point is 00:59:58 She says, you and me both know that I have a I'm legally required to report if I think you're a danger to yourself or others. So I need you to convince me that you're not. And so they sit down, they sit in the living room together and she's basically like tell me are you okay and she's like well like my husband thinks i'm crazy my sister won't let me talk to her uh and like my therapist is here trying to make me convince them that i'm not a threat to myself or others so like other than other than all of that, I'm really good. And she's not doing a great job of convincing her. But at this point she's, yeah,
Starting point is 01:00:34 pretty, uh, got bigger fish to fry. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Other stuff going on. And so she's talking to her and then the phone rings and therapist is like, you can answer it. And she answers it. And it's the therapist. And she's like, Rose, I just wanted to check in on you. I'm like, sorry that we there with her and the therapist just starts smiling really big.
Starting point is 01:01:12 She drops the phone and starts to like turn to run away. The therapist smiling at her saying it's almost time. smiling at her saying it's almost time and she grabs her by the throat and is i don't know just very scary and rose is able to wriggle free and gets into her car and she drives straight to the hospital and she's got a huge knife with her that she tucks up her sleeve. Oh no. That'll do it. It's such a big knife in your sleeve. Oh my God.
Starting point is 01:01:53 Don't bend your arm. Hope you don't fucking trip. That would be bad. So she goes into Carl's room and he is immediately, obviously, very scared of her. Oh, this is sad. And she's looking at him and she's very wild eyed, looking real crazy. And the boss comes in and is like, Rose, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here. And she slowly pulls the knife out of her sleeve and he's looking at the knife and he's like, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here. And she slowly pulls the knife out of her sleeve.
Starting point is 01:02:25 And he's looking at the knife and he's like, what are you doing? And she stabs Carl so many times, stabbing him, stabbing him in the chest, stabbing him in the stomach. And then Carl starts laughing and smiling at her. And she turns and looks at her boss who is screaming and screaming and screaming and he takes his hands to his face and rips his own face off and it cuts back to the car outside of the hospital. But the boss is knocking at her car window now being like, what are you doing? Why are you parked here? And he sees the knife on her passenger seat and looks like he says, I think you should come inside, Rose. Like, I don't think you should be alone right now.
Starting point is 01:03:20 And like, please come inside. She said and she has a moment of like realization of being alone she's like that's what i need i need to be alone because if there's no witness that then i can't pass it won't pass and it won't i won't die and so she drives off and joel is calling her and saying like are you okay like i i i'll come and be with you. And she's like, no, I need to be alone. That's the whole thing. And he's like, that's crazy.
Starting point is 01:03:50 What's you're just going to, like, be alone forever. Like, that's not a good solution. And she's like, it's all I can think of. It's all I can it's all I can do right now. And so she drives to that abandoned childhood. There it is. There it childhood. Old abandoned house. There it is. There it is.
Starting point is 01:04:07 There it is. In a movie about trauma. We got to go back to the scene of where it all started. Mm-hmm. And so she goes in the house and it's creepy as hell. It's nasty. Really run down. There's furniture with sheets over know, sheets over it.
Starting point is 01:04:28 That just looks creepy. No electricity. Obviously, no one's paying for this electricity to be on. So she finds a little kerosene lantern and is walking down the hallways with that and goes into the room that we saw in the very beginning where her mom died. like laying on the bed with a bottle of pills and alcohol and she's kind of like blinking in and out of consciousness and we see kid rose finding her like that and she says rose rose baby mommy made a mistake i need you to call the ambulance rose. I need you to call the ambulance Rose. Like I need you to call and Rose just
Starting point is 01:05:30 looks really scared and closes the door and does not call the ambulance. Oh boy. It's tough. It's tough. Oh that's bad. We also got the implication that she was like maybe really abusive too because that her sister left yeah no i'm i'm yeah no no no i'm not
Starting point is 01:05:53 saying that it excuses it but it's like she was clearly like had a terrible childhood she was a kid right yeah i think she's like 10 or so Yeah, I think she's like 10 or so. That's really sad. So now it's nighttime in this creepy house and she's in that room where her mom died that day and basically says why did you do it rose why did you let me die and we get this like very cathartic conversation of rose saying i was scared of you like you terrified me i was a kid and you were really scary and she's crying and it's really emotional and then the mom starts growing bigger and bigger and bigger and turns
Starting point is 01:06:57 into this monstrous looking crazy um I'm like is this Javier botet it's not unfortunately but it starts chasing her it's huge it's like bigger than the ceiling so it's like just looking very scary and chases her and pins her down at some point and says you can't escape your mind and she's like she says yeah well neither can you which i guess now that i wrote that down it's like i don't know that i even fully understand what this conversation means but i guess he's i don't really get the metaphor i guess it's she's saying like i won't let it pass on to somebody else. I guess so. It's like very heavy handed at parts and then very like what at other parts. Yeah. So.
Starting point is 01:07:53 Yeah. So she smacks it with the lantern and it catches on fire and is very much burning and screaming. And she watches as it completely burns to a crisp. And basically the whole house burns down. She's crying, sitting outside. And after the house has burned down, she goes back to Jules. And is basically like, it's over. It's done.
Starting point is 01:08:29 No. And she's like, I have always put up a lot of walls since what happened when I was a kid. Like, I've been scared for people to get too close. And with you, I could feel those walls coming down and it was terrifying. And so I pushed you away and that wasn't fair of me. And I'm like, it was selfish and I'm sorry. And she's like, and I'm going to be selfish again
Starting point is 01:09:00 and ask like, if I can sleep here and if you'll just stay with me and like, watch me sleep. Can you do that? And he's selfish again and asks, like, if I can sleep here and if you'll just stay with me and, like, watch me sleep. Can you do that? And he's looking like this is something he's wanted to hear for a long time. And he says, yes, of course. Of course I'll stay with you. And then he smiles and he says, ah says i'll stay with you forever and she screams and tries to run out of his house and runs right back into her house into the abandoned house childhood home she's back
Starting point is 01:09:38 she was there the whole time she never left and the entity is there. It's called the monstrosity in the IMDB page. And as she like arrives back there in her consciousness or whatever, real Joel is pulling up like he's figured out that that's where she is. And she sees him and just screams, no, no, no, no, no. And runs into the house and locks the door and so she's in there with the monstrosity and Joel is like
Starting point is 01:10:13 trying to bang down the door and she's just screaming no no no and it comes at her and again like it rips off its own face and has just rows and rows of teeth. So many rows of teeth. Its face is like this long oval with just a hundred rows of teeth.
Starting point is 01:10:38 And then it reaches out to her and pulls her jaw open in a way that kind of reminded me of Possessor the way that this effect is where it's almost like she turns into like clay and he like rips open her mouth in a huge huge way and she starts climbing into it
Starting point is 01:10:59 as Joel busts down this door makes it in and now it's, you're really quiet in there. Uh-oh. Where is she? And he's looking around. Rose, Rose, where are you? And finds her as she has finished dumping the jug of kerosene all over herself.
Starting point is 01:11:23 Her back to him. the jug of kerosene all over herself her back to him and she turns around and has a big smile on her face and a box of matches in her hand and he's like rose no no no and she opens the match lights it and lights herself on fire and And we see in his. The reflection in his eye. He like is staring at her. In complete shock and terror. And we see it like zoom into his eye. And the reflection of her burning alive.
Starting point is 01:11:56 And that's the end of the movie. No. Okay. So nothing you can do. Yeah I'm pretty fucking message there it's still pretty yeah if we're talking about this being a metaphor then yep no escaping trauma sorry dark as hell don't like it one little bit yeah you can confront it it's still there sorry i really thought she was gonna find a way to kill herself with nobody there and it was going to die with her. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:25 I think that that. Like what if she dies and nobody sees her? Yeah. I mean I think that maybe is what she was trying to do. She was trying to do and then Joel should have. Yeah. But she really should have explained it a little better to Joel. He's been like no you really can't be there.
Starting point is 01:12:43 But I guess that's the whole point is you don't believe, you don't trust the person who's having a psychotic break. Yeah. Fuck. He seemed a little bit more on board with it, though. That's true. That's true. Wowie. Sorry, Joel. Sorry, Joel. I'm confused
Starting point is 01:12:58 because he still seems to be alive, right? Yeah. He's like doing okay? I guess I gotta see if he's okay. Yeah, maybe check on him. Well, it'll pass on to him yeah maybe we'll get smile too starring Joel oh I really don't like it I really don't like it Joel Jensen my Joel
Starting point is 01:13:14 wow yeah that was really scary that was yeah fuck no thanks it's like a very fun third act well some parts less fun than others but like that final look at the monster
Starting point is 01:13:29 and him like crawling into her mouth was very cool and I just I like when a movie like really fucking goes there in the end and it's like let's just go all out here let's be weird man whatever I appreciate that and I like I like a heavy handed metaphor I appreciate that. And I like,
Starting point is 01:13:45 I like a heavy handed metaphor. I've said it before. I'll say it a hundred times. I, I like it. Um, but I was a little confused ultimately with what it was trying to say in the end about trauma.
Starting point is 01:13:59 Yeah. I would like to read some reviews about it and see what the filmmaker director was after seems like it's a little nihilistic yeah that's my main takeaway was that like I liked it she's like oh I need to like
Starting point is 01:14:20 be alone which is an interesting part of like, I need to confront my trauma alone, but then it's like, well, it doesn't work. That doesn't work either.
Starting point is 01:14:35 Nice try. Dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark. We did it.
Starting point is 01:14:42 I liked it. I liked it. It was scary. So see, so see. Yes.
