Welcome to Too Scary Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for those too scared to
Starting point is 00:01:29 watch for themselves. I'm Emily and I am too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Henley and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies. I'm Sammy and I love watching scary movies and so I watch them so that you don't have to and we have a movie that Emily is going to really hate today for a little change of pace. It's been a while. Yeah, it's my turn.
Starting point is 00:01:49 It's my turn. Fair enough. I'm looking to breathe a big sigh of relief. Yes, because Emily's probably going to absolutely love it. Oh, yeah. I'm going to be floating on sunshine the entire episode. And if you want to skip straight to our recap, there are timestamps in the show notes because first I got to ask you guys a question because I don't think we have haunted housekeeping.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Because how tell us over? I don't think we do. How tell us over? There's no announcements. Oh my fucking God. Nothing to say. Let's just wrap it up. No, it's okay.
Starting point is 00:02:18 We will continue. We'll find a way. Yeah. I'll start looking into horror news again and maybe announcing that, but I got nothing today. So, tell me, did anything scary happen to you guys this week? Well, just real quick, you guys, Silas's fingernails started falling off.
Starting point is 00:02:39 What? What do you mean? The whole nail, obviously, Not trimmed nails falling off. What? So this started happening at the beach. I was noticing his finger... Two of his fingernails looked funny. It looked like the top part had kind of shed off of it and was hanging off.
Starting point is 00:03:00 And he's three, so he will not let me hold his hands still. He would not let me look at them. It's like a cat. And yeah, exactly like a cat. And so I kept trying to, like, sneak a look. Like, I kept trying to, like, distract him and, like, take a look at what the hell is going on with his fingernails. But he was on to me, so he was, like, not letting me look.
Starting point is 00:03:18 And then finally, when he fell asleep... With a cat, you get on their back and you hold them down. Yeah, we tried just sitting on top of him and grabbing his hand from behind and going, it's okay, it's okay, shh, shh. You could try that. Yeah, that might work. I'll do that next time.
Starting point is 00:03:34 I'll do that next time. Long story short, I realized that like two of them were falling off and I was like, what the hell is this? And then I noticed that it was happening on his another fingernail as well. And I obviously spiraled. Is he turning into the fly? I spiraled, I was like,
Starting point is 00:03:49 this is something terrible is happening. Like this is obviously awful. So I looked it up and I also reached out to his pediatrician and it's been confirmed. So this is a side effect of having a super high fever when you have hand, foot, and mouth. So if you guys remember. Just keeps getting worse and worse.
Starting point is 00:04:09 It never goes away. He had hand, foot, and mouth two months ago and he had a super high fever, like 105 degree fever. It was so high. It bakes your fingernails off. I was gonna say it's so. And it makes your fingernails fall off. Well, basically what it does is it stops them.
Starting point is 00:04:23 I love how you were like, oh yeah, just real quick. I'll just say the most horrifying thing. Yeah, I guess I do have something to share. So I don't fully understand it, but basically like it halted the growth of his fingernails as they were while a new fingernail started growing underneath of it. So basically like it like shed the old fingernails. Like baby teeth. as they were while a new fingernail started growing underneath of it.
Starting point is 00:04:45 So basically, it like shed the old fingernails. Like baby teeth. But then there are new ones that are there. It's not like he doesn't have fingernails. He just has like really short new fingernails underneath the old fingernails. It's insane to me that his body was like, well, we got to shut something down. Fever's too high. The fingernails. First to go. So let's start at the edges and just let's stop.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Let's just see if that works. Can you believe that? It's like, it is. No, I cannot. It is crazy. Kids are so scary. The things that happen with children, it is terrifying. He's fine.
Starting point is 00:05:22 It didn't hurt. I kept asking him, like, does it hurt? And he was like, no. And I think that me asking that was probably making it worse. Mom, stop being weird about this. Yeah. And don't put that into my head. It's just my fingernails falling off.
Starting point is 00:05:33 It's not a big deal. Why are you being so weird about it? It's no big deal. So he's fine. He like didn't even, he didn't bat an eye about it. He did not care. I was the one that was definitely more freaked out. And he has fingernails, he's fine, all's good.
Starting point is 00:05:49 And it is just a normal side effect of- Super normal. Hand, foot, and mouth. So fascinating. Wow, this reminds me, Joel wore uncomfortable shoes two days in a row. And it's a thing that I do seven days in a row, basically, always., his toenails hurt
Starting point is 00:06:07 because they had been like, you know, and he was so overwhelmed by it. Last time he was like, are my toenails gonna come off? And I was like, from wearing uncomfortable shoes for two days? No, I think your toenails will stay on your feet. Sweet man. He's fine, he'll be just fine.
Starting point is 00:06:24 He's not gonna like that I just said this, but I was gonna say, Joel's not gonna be happy about you talking about his feet. I remember there was an episode that I was off and you guys talked about my feet and you were like, Sam, he's not gonna be happy we're talking about our feet. Joel and I both don't like people talking about our feet.
Starting point is 00:06:38 If you're not here, I'm gonna talk about your feet. Sorry. You know that I'm more than happy to talk about my feet because my feet are, I've told you guys this and I'm going to say it now on the podcast. I know what you're going to say. Which is that my mother-in-law, God bless her, told me that I have peasant feet. She said that I have peasant feet.
Starting point is 00:07:00 We all know what it means. She said, you're so slender, but you have peasant feet. Like worker's feet type of thing. Like a worker. I think it's a foot that can go up a mountain. A well-worn foot. Almost puff-like, really. Trot up a mountain without a shoe on.
Starting point is 00:07:22 God, it's funny. Kind of like a goat. Kind of like a goat, too. Kind of like a goat. And maybe. a goat too. Kind of like a goat. And maybe. Bit of a compliment if you think about it. It's kind of a compliment, exactly. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:07:31 So, Emily. Anyway. Oh, boy. Anything scary? I mean, basically just that it is currently September and I am getting married in September, which is crazy! Everything's great.
Starting point is 00:07:45 It's gonna be great. I can't wait for it to happen and be done and to stop talking about it. I'm so tired of talking about it. And yet here I am talking about it. I just redid our seating chart for probably the ninth time, but this is the one I think.
Starting point is 00:07:58 I think this is the one I think it figured it out. This one feels right. And hopefully this is the one where like, no more knock on wood surprises about like, oh, just kidding, I am coming, or just kidding, I'm not coming. Yep. I mean, who am I kidding?
Starting point is 00:08:09 That will happen. But you know, we'll just freaking, we're just riding with it. We're just riding with it. Hell yeah. Four more weeks, baby. It's great. The countdown has begun.
Starting point is 00:08:19 I am so excited. Countdown has very much begun. It's gonna be great. And I feel so stupid when it comes to like literally anything else. It's like my brain is just, there's no more room in there. So I need to clear, I need to clear some space. But it's going to be great. Twenty something more days.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Twenty-seven more days. 27. 27 more days. Yeah, I don't know what I'm wearing yet. I mean, I kind of have an idea, but I want you to figure out the wardrobe. That you said you were gonna wear. I know, I know I need to try it on. I don't know if that's happening or not. What are you gonna put on those peasant feet?
Starting point is 00:08:59 I don't know. That's the biggest problem. Yeah, that's really, you gotta think about how you're gonna cover those hooves. I think that just a huge pair of wooden clogs. That's all you can do really. The only thing they fit into. Oh, that's why you're always wearing huge wooden clogs.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Just trodden around in those big clothes. Oh boy. Oh man. Sammy, how about you? I have two and one is that I went to the strip club last night and between me and my two friends that I went with, we spent over $1,000 and I was sitting in the front row, obviously,
Starting point is 00:09:48 and thinking about how, like, you know how sometimes you hear stories of like, this man spent $10,000 at the strip club, and you're like, oh my God, how? I was like, I know how, I know exactly how. And I would do the same thing if I could. And man, it feels good to spend money there. I just had a really great time.
Starting point is 00:10:09 That's like good karma. I was saying that you're not allowed, you're not allowed to go to the strip club and not throw money at the strippers. You're not allowed to sit in the front row and not put a thousand dollars on that table. You gotta do it. Otherwise, shame on you.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Shame on you. Shame on you. And then my other scary thing is something I wanna talk to our guest about in a minute. Spoiler alert, we have a guest. And that is that I saw a tarantula hawk in Griffith Park. Wait, what is that? Despite what you might imagine from the name,
Starting point is 00:10:47 it is a wasp. What? The biggest fucking wasp I had ever seen. So big they call it a hawk. They call it a tarantula hawk. Exactly. Two big things. Oh.
Starting point is 00:10:58 What? Luckily it didn't come close to me. I saw it. How did you know when it was? I looked it up later. I Googled huge wasp with black body and orange wings. Oh, that's distinct, yeah. And I've just never seen one before
Starting point is 00:11:14 and I don't like that I have seen one now. But it did stay away from me. I will give it that. It was not in pursuit. Thank God. I need to look this up. Would it be in pursuit? I don't know. I think wasps are pretty scary in general. They've been getting into my house lately
Starting point is 00:11:29 because apparently in August and September, the queen wasp leaves the nest. Now I'm talking regular wasps, standard run-of-the-mill wasps. Maybe this happens with all wasps. I don't know. Oh my God. I don't like Googling pictures of this. Sorry. Oh my God. I made a mistake by just looking at it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, no. No. Can you imagine seeing it in real life? I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what planet I was on. My window sills are covered with wasp carcasses. They're like 30 wasp carcasses in every window sill in my house. They're everywhere. Oh, boy. Well, apparently the queen wasp leaves the nest around now and then all the rest of the wasps are like,
Starting point is 00:12:09 what do we do? What do we, where do we go? Are you my mommy? And so that's helped me feel a little sympathetic to them. I'm like, oh, this poor guy who lost his queen. Where's my mommy? Anyways, okay. Let's get into our movie and introing our guests
Starting point is 00:12:22 because I've got to hear more about this. We've got a lot of WASP questions. Yeah. So today we are talking about The Reef came out in 2010, written and directed by Andrew Trowke, starring Damian Walsh howling, Zoe Naylor, Adrian Pickering, Guyton Grantley, and Kieran Darcy-Smith. It is streaming on VOD.
Starting point is 00:12:44 And as I mentioned, we have a guest with us today, someone who knows a lot about sharks and wildlife in general. This is his third time on the podcast, which makes him officially a horror-respondent. Oh my gosh. Oh, you guys know him and you love him. He's the host of Tooth and Claw, Wes Larson.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Welcome back. Hey. And congratulations. Thank you. On your new correspondent status. Do I get a plaque or something I get to put on my wall? Oh my God, we should make a plaque. That's a kind of like, naming ceremony.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Yeah, we'll get plaques in the works. We'll, eh, good suggestion, good suggestion. I hope it's made up of baby fingernails that I get to hang in a little more. I saved them all. I definitely have a box full of them right next to where I sleep. Wes, how are you doing and do you know anything about tarantula hawks? I'm doing great.
Starting point is 00:13:39 I know a little bit about tarantula hawks. We've done a Yellow Jacket episode. So same family, they're a wasp. Tarantula hawks. We've done a Yellow Jacket episode, so same family. They're a wasp. Okay. Tarantula hawks are really neat. I know it kind of grossed you guys out a little bit, but they're named that because they actually
Starting point is 00:13:54 put their eggs into a live spider and then the eggs eat the spider alive and that's how they're incubated. Wes, you're so funny. You're like, they're pretty neat. You guys are a horror movie podcast. Because of this horror thing. This is horror movie shit that they're incubated. Wes, you're so funny. You're like, they're pretty neat. You guys are a horror movie podcast. Because of this horror thing. This is horror movie shit that we're talking about.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah. This is where inspiration comes from. It's like, they're like, literally, they're like alien. They are, yeah. But to a spider. Yeah, yeah. In fact, we just did an episode about animals that inspired alien,
Starting point is 00:14:23 and this is one of the ones we picked because they- Wow. There's because they use a living host. Yeah, there's a number of animals that do this, a lot of them in the wasp family, so it's pretty cool. You know, if you don't like spiders, then this is an animal you can really like. As far as their aggression towards humans, you have to kind of mess with wasps
Starting point is 00:14:42 to get them angry at you. They're not like bees where if they sting you, they'll die. So they're a little bit more ready to sting than a honeybee will. But they're not chasing us for no good reason. There's no reason for them to sting us unless we're pissing them off. That was the vibe I got. Yeah. Yeah, he seemed pretty chill.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Yeah. Wow. There have been so many wasps in my life recently. I guess now you've explained the reason why, Sammy, but like every time we try to eat outside and we haven't been able to eat outside. Every time we eat outside, we're just attacked by wasps. They're lost. They don't know what to do, Henley.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Oh, now I know. I can say, I mean, they eat protein. This isn't just an, they don't just eat nectar. So they'll, that's why sometimes at a picnic or whatever, they come get on your food because they're actually eating it. But they're really, they're great little animals because they handle a lot of pests. They'll kill like mosquitoes. They kill a lot of stuff that is a threat, a threat to us.
Starting point is 00:15:37 So even though their stings are awful, like they do us a big service. So yeah. Wow. I did read that the tarantula hawk sting is one of the most painful us a big service. So yeah. Wow. I did read that the tarantula hawk sting is one of the most painful in the world. Apparently, yeah. So I'm glad that I didn't get too close.
Starting point is 00:15:53 Didn't feel that one. Yeah, I'd rather not. Wow. And Wes, I believe you were just in Africa. Did anything scary happen to you this week? Yeah. You were probably doing some scary stuff. I feel like plenty you could you this week? Yeah. You're probably doing some scary stuff. I feel like plenty could probably touch on.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Yeah. Honestly, the scariest thing for us, we were on a trip that we led with listeners. And by the way, a lot of them mentioned Too Scary Didn't Watch. A lot of them said that they listened to you guys or that they found us through you or likewise. So I thought that was kind of heartwarming.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Amazing. That's very sweet. That's very cute. We don't take people on trips. You should. It's really fun. Now that is me. That is what I call me.
Starting point is 00:16:33 I mean. We really enjoyed it. It's great. But we went in this vehicle that wasn't built for a lot of the roads that we were on. It should have been, but it wasn't. It was like a kind of like a modified semi-truck that was really lopsided and swayed a lot of the roads that we were on, it should have been, but it wasn't. It was like a kind of like a modified semi truck that was really lopsided and swayed a lot
Starting point is 00:16:48 and was pretty gnarly. And we got stuck in the rainforest in Kenya, which I didn't realize there's rainforest there, but there are. We got stuck on a muddy road and like really, really stuck in the middle of nowhere and had to push this vehicle that was up on two wheels with like mud flying
Starting point is 00:17:05 back at us. And it was kind of one of those things where like this thing's either going to fall over, it's going to get back on the road. And luckily it stayed on the road. But that was probably the scariest moment of the trip. How many people were there? It was like 25 people. I mean, I think we would have been there for a while. Would have screwed up our trip a bit. We would have gotten Lord of the Flies real quick. Yeah. But luckily we got it back on the road and got out of there. But yeah, it wasn't that scary.
Starting point is 00:17:33 That was honestly probably the only scary moment for me. I do like asking you this question though, because you always have pretty real answers. I feel like once it was that you had been chased by a bear into your truck. Yeah, being like, yeah, we had to. Ours are like, I spent $1,000 at a strip club. A little scary. What animals did you see while you were out there?
Starting point is 00:17:58 We saw a lot. We saw lions, we saw cheetahs, elephants, giraffes. Like kind of all of the major African animals outside of leopards. I still have yet to see a leopard. And I've been a lot of places with leopards. It's kind of like my unicorn that I'm chasing. They're sneaky. Yeah, but we're going back in like a month.
Starting point is 00:18:17 So maybe I'll see them then. Wow. Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed, yeah. Wow. Elusive leopards. I went on a little like day-long safari in South Africa and my favorite thing that I saw... Saw a bunch of leopards?
Starting point is 00:18:32 Was. I saw so many leopards. Baby leopards. It was easy for me. No, no, no. I saw so many elephants and baby elephants in a full cuddle puddle. Just fully, so many baby elephants just on a full cuddle puddle, just fully, like so many baby elephants just like on top of each other, cuddling each other and like playing with each other.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And I was like, this is like the craziest shit I've ever seen. This is the cutest thing I've ever seen. So wholesome, the opposite of a tarantula hawk. So let's all think about elephant, baby elephant. Just keep that in mind with whatever think about elephant, baby elephant. Cuttle puddles. Just keep that in mind with whatever's about to come our way. Yeah, today we're gonna be talking about sharks,
Starting point is 00:19:10 which sharks are my favorite animal. I know. I love sharks, but I'm also very scared of them. But no one's as scared as Emily of them. No, I really don't like to think about it. Can you retell the story of when, I think it was 47 meters down that was currently in theaters, but you were driving?
Starting point is 00:19:29 Yeah, it was one of those meters below or whatever. The poster for that movie is just a huge shark with a big open mouth. And they put that shit on the side of a bus. And I just think that's irresponsible because I was next to this bus in traffic for so long. And like, I can't be looking at that and driving safely. And I really think that marketing teams listen up.
Starting point is 00:19:56 That is that is a dangerous thing to do to citizens. It was really upsetting. It was a really, really scary, really scary picture. And I had to look at it for, I was like, in West Hollywood at the end of the day, like I'm talking most of my drive is stationary next to this bus. Do you think that there's anything
Starting point is 00:20:19 that Wes could teach us today that would change your tune? No, I have a lot of respect for sharks. I do, I think they're amazing and important and extraordinary. I just don't ever wanna look at them or think about them. You know, fair enough. Live and let live. But I really.
Starting point is 00:20:40 You're gonna think about them a little bit, I think, for the next hour or so. The ocean is already so scary, and I would be so fucked if I was in the ocean for any length of time. So there's that, and then it's like, I don't like that they come from under you. Anything that gets you from underneath,
Starting point is 00:21:03 it's like that, We're supposed to be, which I know you guys just talked about tremors when I couldn't be there. And yeah, that turns the land into the ocean because what you really don't want is something to come up under you. But even that I'm like more okay with that because of I'd be like standing.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Do you know what I mean? It's just like, and it's just a bite would be such a bad way to get hurt in general. And it just, there's a lot about them. And they look scary and their faces are like pointy or they're not or they're hammerhead. And that's also what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:21:37 Like that's not, that shouldn't be. They also never stop moving. They never like sleep and stop moving, right? I think some do. Or do they? Some of them do, yeah. Oh, they do? Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Okay. Wes, what's your experience with sharks? I feel like you've gone diving with sharks. Yeah. Et cetera. I love them. You love them? My second favorite animal is a great white shark.
Starting point is 00:21:59 I grew up with them being number one. Up until the age of six, when people would asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I'd say a shark because I thought I could be a shark. Yeah. So I love them. I think they're truly like some of the most beautiful misunderstood animals on the planet. I dove with a lot of different species.
Starting point is 00:22:20 I've been in great white shark cages dove, like freed, free diving with bull sharks and sandbar sharks and all sorts of like hammer, great hammerheads. I've swam with them. Um, what do you think is the best like beginner thing of those to do? Cause I'm am interested in maybe seeing a shark in the wild one day, but I think a cage diving with the great white is way too much for me. There's some, There's some free dives in Hawaii where you dive with Galapagos sharks or silky sharks. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They've been doing it for a really long time. Silky sharks, those sound nice.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Yeah, they're beautiful species. If you get really lucky, a tiger shark will show up, but it's a group that's been doing it for a long time. They know the animals really well. It's a group that's been doing it for a long time. They know their animals, the animals really well. And I think because you're not in a cage, it just makes you feel like you're, you're experiencing them the way, you know, that they're meant to be experienced. And I, I, I've talked to a lot of people that have done that specific dive and you don't have to dive, you snorkel where they've said it has completely changed their perception of sharks.
Starting point is 00:23:22 So I think that'd be a good one to start with. Yeah. That sounds really nice. Yeah. That's really nice. But perception of sharks. So I think that'd be a good one to start with. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah, that sounds really nice. Yeah. That's really nice. But I love sharks. How many times have you gone in a cage? I've done two cages. So I did a great white shark cage in South Africa
Starting point is 00:23:36 and then one in Australia. Both times were amazing. I just, yeah, I just think they're such a cool animal. Oh my God. Wow. They are, but just keep it to yourselves. I just think they're such a cool animal. They are, but just keep it to yourselves. They do though. They do keep it to themselves. They do. They definitely do. I will tell you guys that the reef has a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.8 on IMDB, no Metacritic rating,
Starting point is 00:24:07 even though the sequel to the Reef does have a Metacritic rating. Kind of weird, but okay. Budget was 3.8 million and it made 124,000 in Australia because it was released on straight to DVD in a lot of places. So they probably made most of their money back in the home. Because it was released on straight to DVD in a lot of places. They probably made most of their money back in the home video rentals, whatnot. The movie is based on true events that happened in the 1980s off the coast of Queensland. I'm sure Wes is going to tell us more about that. And the sharks in this movie are real.
Starting point is 00:24:50 And they did a thing where on one of the days, they did like live streaming of them filming this movie so people could tune in and watch how they were filming things. I couldn't find a lot of information about that, but I've never heard of a movie doing that before. I thought that was kind of fascinating. And that's all the trivia I really have. I think we'll sprinkle things in as we go.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Is this an Australian movie? Yes, Australian movie. And the director had said something about how the Americans took an Australian story to make open water, that Jaws was filmed somewhere in Australia, and so this director was like, Australians need to have an Australian shark movie through and through.
Starting point is 00:25:37 Okay, well, pretty great. So we get the reef. The shark, like the actual shark footage in Jaws was collected by the Neptune Islands in Australia. That's where I went and saw Great White. So that's where they collected some of that footage. Yeah. Oof.
Starting point is 00:25:52 I think we should watch the trailer at the end because... Yeah. Oh yeah. We have some time to mentally prepare. But if you want to watch that, that's available on our Patreon. But let's just get straight into this recap dive in, if you will. Let's dive in. Let's do it.

I'm also in a thriller novel phase, and I love this setup of,
Starting point is 00:28:48 this is what it looks like happened, how did we get here, who did what, wait, this person was there, this person said they were with that person, and all the little twists and turns, really is so fun, it is just exactly what I need in this moment. I am currently in chapter four where we've learned
Starting point is 00:29:07 there may be a secret affair, a secret admirer. We don't know. We are still trying to put together the clues, but each new level is full of intrigue. And also who doesn't love a good eye spy? I mean, honestly, I love just looking through these little 1920s rooms. We even went to a cemetery, which you know, how wonderfully spooky and appropriate is that? If you too want to relax and lose yourself in this captivating quest of mystery, murder and romance, download June's Journey for free today on iOS and Android. So we get a title card that says, based on a true story.
Starting point is 00:29:53 We meet our main character, Luke, at an airport. He's welcoming some friends that have just landed. And these are his friend, Matt, Matt's girlfriend, Suzy, and Matt's sister, Kate. And it's pretty clear right off the bat that Luke and Kate have kind of a thing. They seem to have history. And where in Australia are they? I didn't write that down. I don't think it ever really says. But like, my take was Queensland because they're by Coral Reef. So it's really says, but like my take was Queensland because they're by coral reef. So it's either Western Australia or like Queensland.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Okay. Yeah. And they are all visiting on like vacation to visit Luke because his job is that he sails around the world delivering boats, places. And I was like, he sails and brings a boat with him. No, it's the boat that he's sailing. I mean, I was a little confused by it too,
Starting point is 00:30:49 because I don't think that's what he's doing currently. They're just having a little fun vacation. There's no delivering. We'll see about that. Or maybe there is. Were they meant to be delivering this boat, Wes, do you think? I took it as like, he had this boat to deliver,
Starting point is 00:31:02 but he had a little while before he had to do it. So they went to go have some fun on the boat. Oh, okay, okay. Yeah. Great. Sorry for the people whose boat this was supposed to be. Irresponsible. That is irresponsible.
Starting point is 00:31:12 He's not a great boat courier, in my opinion. Great. But they're all excited. We're gonna have so much fun. They go into this like boat supply store and there's a bunch of shark teeth, you know Jaws, what do you call those jaws? Yeah, I suppose Hang on the walls of all different kinds of sharks and the shop owner says to Kate Kate
Starting point is 00:31:35 Who's looking at them like oh my god. Where did you get these and he's like from here like they're all in the water here and She looks a little nervous for a second and he says don't worry You know what they say you're more likely to die from a bee sting than from a shark in the water here and she looks a little nervous for a second and he says, don't worry, you know what they say, you're more likely to die from a bee sting than from a shark. Yeah, I hate that statistic. Not very nice to bees. It's not nice to bees, also like we live with bees,
Starting point is 00:31:56 you know, like we're out around bees every day. So yeah, we're more likely to get stung by bees and die. If we lived in the ocean, we'd be much more likely to get killed by sharks than bees. You know, so it's like- That makes a lot of sense. That is an excellent point, Wes. I just keep imagining every time you talk about how we, like sharks live in the ocean,
Starting point is 00:32:15 we shouldn't bother them. I keep imagining them, like not living in the ocean, like getting out, walking up to Emily's door, opening the door and like- I would not like that. Like it's like, that's not what's happening with sharks. Sharks are not... They're minding their own business.
Starting point is 00:32:28 They're doing their thing in the ocean. Doing their thing in the ocean. But they're keeping to themselves. That is a really great point that it's like, yeah, there's a lot of things to factor in when we're talking about statistics. Right. Like, how many people interact with sharks?
Starting point is 00:32:42 Exactly. If you surf every day of your life, you're much more likely to be killed by a shark than a bee, you know? I'm more likely to be killed by a bear than your average Joe, but yeah. If I got killed by a bear, whoa, you know? What was I doing to get myself in that situation?
Starting point is 00:33:03 Odds are low, that's all I'm saying. Yes. Okay, great. So she breathes a big sigh of relief from this faulty statistic. And they get on their sailboat and Luke and Kate get a moment alone together below deck. And she says this really brings back a lot of memories. So we're getting confirmation. These two have definitely hooked up in the past, don't know what their current status is. And Luke says something like, he's confused why she's there. Is this like what's going
Starting point is 00:33:39 on between us? You wanted a break, but now you're back here. And then somebody else walks in. She makes it clear, like, I'm just here for vacation. We're like, okay, okay. We meet another guy named Warren, who is another sailor that's going to be sailing with them. It's like a coworker essentially of Luke's. They're heading out to Signet Reef to go snorkeling and have some fun. It's like a little island, Turtle Island. You know, they're beautiful reefs. It is beautiful out there.
Starting point is 00:34:16 It does look really nice. And while Kate is snorkeling, she sees a black tip shark. She gets a little nervous about it. Music is tense and then Luke scares her behind her and there's a little jump scare. She never mentions that shark or being scared about sharks. She's just like, oh, hee hee hey, they swim to shore. I will say I have seen a tiny little leopard shark when I was snorkeling in Catalina. And I had been saying like, I'm so scared to see a shark.
Starting point is 00:34:51 So I don't wanna see a shark. I don't wanna see a shark. When I saw the little leopard shark, I immediately swam towards it. I was like so excited and it swam away from me so fast. Really was not the reaction I thought I was gonna have, but just throwing that out there. Sometimes it's really exciting to see a shark. Are black-tip sharks dangerous?
Starting point is 00:35:10 No. I mean, they're on the list of sharks that have bitten people, but it's like, usually the person's aggravating the shark for some reason. They're a shark that you see a lot around reefs and they're really just doing their thing. Just eating little fish, not messing with people at all. Yeah. I mean, my cat bites me when I try to pull at her tufts, you know? It's like, that cat loves me. Yeah, exactly. So they all swim up onto the shore of this island and Warren is back on the boat. They've
Starting point is 00:35:43 left him behind and they're breaking off into a couple. So Matt is with his girlfriend, Susie, and they're being lovey-dovey. And then now Luke and Kate get this moment alone and they start making out and they're getting heated. And then Luke is saying, what is this? Is this just sex or is this something else? She's like, I don't know. We were having fun and now we're not having fun. Why do you have to be such a bitch about it? And, okay. Luke is pressing her and saying,
Starting point is 00:36:12 you know what I think? I think you're scared. I think you're scared of us, of love, essentially. Luke's intense, yeah. Luke is really intense. And she's like, nah, I'm totally fine. Stop being weird. And then we hear a distress call from Warren.
Starting point is 00:36:32 The tide is going down very quickly. So we've got to rush to get back to the sailboat. They have a little dingy blow up boat thing that they all get into and they're rushing back. But because the tide is so low, the bottom of the inflatable boat like scratches on the reef and starts deflating as they are going back to the sailboat and they make it back just in time. They get on the boat.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Phew, now nothing bad's ever gonna happen. I was like, God, wait, wait, wait. Maybe sailor. I think this is just to like, let us know that there's no more floaty boat. Right, no more floaty boat. No more second boat, lifeboat, gone. So apparently the engine won't start of the sailboat
Starting point is 00:37:21 because it's too low on the reef maybe. I don't really know how sailboats work, even though I am a vessel head through and through. Yeah, I feel like they just didn't have enough water. So they're worried about starting it when it was that low, I don't know. Right, yeah. So they raised the sail instead,
Starting point is 00:37:38 because the sailboat does have another way to move. It's just great. So they just raised the sails and that works. So they're like, okay, great. Everything's groovy again. It's nighttime, they're spending the night in the boat. I don't know where their destination is, but we're just hanging out on this boat, I guess, for a couple of days or something. So next morning, Kate comes out to talk to Luke and says, Hey, I'm so sorry about yesterday. And admits like, yeah, maybe she's a little scared. And she's like, Do you not have any doubts about us? And he's like, Well, of course I do. But I
Starting point is 00:38:18 just really missed you. And like, maybe it's maybe it's worth it. Maybe we can really do this thing. Yeah, Luke's sending a lot of mixed signals. Yeah. Not if a shark gets one of them first. Not if, yeah, that would certainly pump the brakes. Yeah, that would hinder things. And Luke is about to make breakfast for Kate. Things are looking up.
Starting point is 00:38:46 And then the boat crashes and capsizes very quickly. And the film, the like filmmaking here is very interesting. I was like, what the hell just happened? I feel like they just did like an underwater shot of like, and then cut to the boat being upside down. I was like, how did it get upside down? I don't know how this happened, but they scraped on the reef
Starting point is 00:39:07 and the boat flipped upside down, I guess. Pretty simple. I mean, sailboats are pretty top heavy boat, right? You'd think perhaps? Maybe. I think the whole thing is that the bottom's gotta be a certain weight to outweigh the top though. I think that's part of the design.
Starting point is 00:39:27 Yeah. Oh no. Anyways, it doesn't matter. The boat's upside down now. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep.
Starting point is 00:39:32 And based on true events, we know a boat can do this. They can, they definitely can. And this one did. And so they all get out of the boat. It's a tense scene. They're, you know, they're, they're trapped below deck, which is now underwater, and there's just a little gap for air, and they don't know where everybody is,
Starting point is 00:39:50 so we're all calling out to each other, panicking. But eventually, all five of them make it out of the boat so that they're floating next to the boat, and then they eventually climb on top of the boat, which is now the bottom of the boat. Got it. And is there land anywhere nearby? Or we just surround, we're just fully in the ocean? Yeah, no, we're fully in the ocean.
Starting point is 00:40:12 Oh boy. But we were at that island yesterday, so. Okay. It might be closer than other things, but no, there's no land in sight, which... Oh, that's bad. Have you ever been, I guess we've been on boats where there's no land in sight.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Yeah, and I didn't like it. I have, I have. I don't like it at all. I don't like it at all. I don't like it. But for me, every time that's happened, I've been in the Chesapeake Bay, which is, land is nearby. Like it's not. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:44 You're not like true, true middle of the ocean. I did go on a cruise when I was 14. I went on a cruise when I was 16 and I didn't think a thing of it. I was just like, whoa, this is awesome. There's a dance club and a buffet and a water slide. So many swimming pools. This is awesome.
Starting point is 00:41:02 And now it would be my actual true nightmare in every sense. Yeah, it's pretty scary. This is kind of my dream. I feel like I constantly I tell my girlfriend, like, if you die, I'm buying a sailboat and I'm living on a sailboat from now on. Like, I love being out in the open ocean. So you're constantly telling her this. When you die.
Starting point is 00:41:22 open ocean. So you're constantly telling her this. Just so you know. And my life insurance policy on you. I can cash out. It's every morning. And here's a really cool boat that I found, but no big deal. I write it on a little sticky note and put it on the bathroom mirror every morning. Good morning.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Good morning. Love you when you die. I'm buying a sailboat and I'm going out. You're the one thing in the way of my dream. This is nice, but eventually I'd really love to live on my boat. But of course you don't want to be stranded on a boat that's upside down. That part's not your thing.
Starting point is 00:41:55 In the middle of the ocean. No, but I do, I have always kind of fantasized about this scenario, cause I think. Like what you would do. I think, yeah, I think this is the most pure survival scenario of anyone out there. Like you have to survive with literally what you have right there.
Starting point is 00:42:09 And I read this book about this guy in Mexico who his boat got washed away from shore and he spent like 400 days adrift at sea. And he survived and he like had this completely, you know, he changed how we view the world and everything. And it was really beautiful and it always made me think, wonder how I would do in that kind of scenario. Probably not well, but I'm still curious about it.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Hey, Wes, you'd do better than anybody else here. I'll tell you. I'd rather, I think I'd rather get like lost in, it's hard to say. I was going to say in the forest or something like... I would, I would as well. A plane crash in the middle of the forest. I would rather get lost in the forest. There's a lot of bugs in the forest or something like. I would as well. Plane crash in the middle of the forest. I would rather get lost in the forest. There's a lot of bugs in the forest though, but.
Starting point is 00:42:49 Yeah, but there's also like. There's not sharks. Trees. Yeah, and water. And you're also not getting waterlogged. You're not like, your body isn't in the water. Which we all know. I would get so sunburned.
Starting point is 00:43:00 If I got lost at sea, just me, only this is unique to me. I would get so lumbered. I don't even think about that. Although, I feel like they do depict that in some of those types of movies. Yeah, ouch, ouch, ouch. Castaway, for example, he gets so tanned. You know, I've never seen Castaway. It's great.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Great movie. So I hear... Wes, you've got to read The Wager. Yeah, I want to read that too. Have you heard of that book? No. Oh, it's about the craziest survival story in the mid-18th century where a British man of war crashes in Patagonia and they have all the like, they have the captain's log
Starting point is 00:43:37 book and all of them kept very intense journals. And so you got to just read it. It's really good. I'm adding it to my list. It's really good. It's really good. The wager. The wager, it's great. That would be an intense place to be surviving. Oh yeah, oh yeah, it was freezing cold.
Starting point is 00:43:56 And also there were native people there who were gonna help them, but then they were rude and horrible. Rude. And they left, because they were like, well fuck you guys. They were rude and horrible. Rude. And they left because they were like, well, fuck you guys. They were impolite. And it's like, are you fucking crazy?
Starting point is 00:44:10 Anyway, stories like this make me imagine the only thing I fantasize about is being able to have a cyanide pill in my mouth at all times that I could crack into if this ever happened. It's like, I want instant death. I don't even wanna try. I don't even wanna try. It seems really hard.
Starting point is 00:44:30 It seems really hard to try. Also, I just wouldn't do well. I know nothing. I bet these people are probably gonna do great. Yeah, they seem extremely well-prepared. Poor Warren, man. Yeah, I'm not even really sure why he's there, but. He's probably wondering the same thing right about now.
Starting point is 00:44:51 Yeah, he's not, he's kicking himself. Luke says that he doesn't think they should stay here. He like looks at the way the water is moving and he says currently the current is like taking us further out to sea. And so if we stay on the boat, it might sink eventually and we'll just be further in the middle of the ocean, further away from anything.
Starting point is 00:45:14 He says that like immediately too. Like it's like, all right, take a breath. Dude, let's have a second to adjust to the boat flipping over somehow. to adjust to the boat flipping over somehow. He goes into the, like back under, into the boat to get some supplies, because there is a distress signal that they have, but it's only, it's like an old one, so it has to, essentially a plane has to fly overhead and then you can send a distress signal to
Starting point is 00:45:46 their radio type of thing. But they're not in any flight path. They have not seen any planes. But it's something. So we're going to grab that, grabbing some other supplies because Luke wants to swim back to the island that they were just at. He says it's about probably 10 or 12 miles away. Suzie says she's not a great swimmer. She doesn't know if she can make it that far. He says, I'll get some things to help with that. They have a little boogie board and some wetsuits, cuts this boogie board in half, gives half to Suzy and starts to give half to Kate. Kate goes, I'm not going. I can't do it. Warren also by this time has already been like, there's no fucking way. I fish these waters. I know what's in these waters.
Starting point is 00:46:37 I'm not swimming. I'm staying right here. There's nothing you can do to change my mind. Sorry. I don't want to fight about it, but that's just what I'm going to do. I'm going to sit right here. Great. That's what I'd say too, without a doubt. Yeah, me too. I'd be like, I'm sorry, wait, 10 to 12 miles maybe? Also, it's like, how do you know for a fact you're going in the right direct, like you
Starting point is 00:46:56 can't see it. He does have a little trick with his watch that he's like, you do noon or 12 to the sun and split the difference between, he does a little like, little watch come to this thing. Yeah, would not fill me with confidence. And as they're getting wetsuits on, Warren is like, it's like, oh, you know, you're gonna look like a seal, sharks like seals.
Starting point is 00:47:23 And Luke is like, come on, man on man, you don't have to go, but please don't just scare everybody else. And he's like, I'm just saying. Jesus Christ. And so yeah, Kate says she's not going, so it's Luke. Why don't they make wetsuits like neon orange? I was wondering about this, because I know that they do make some like that But why does the default seem to be black? Is there a good reason for it to be black?
Starting point is 00:47:51 Tell us you're a wetsuit expert I'm not I'm not a wetsuit expert, but I have learned there's this To dispel a myth right off the bat here. I know we're gonna get more into some science later, please For a long time there's been this idea of this mistaken identity thing that sharks attack people right off the bat here. I know we're gonna get more into some science later. Please, please. Yes, yes, yes. But for a long time, there's been this idea of this mistaken identity thing that sharks attack people because they think they're a prey item. And personally, I don't think that gives this animal the respect that we should give it. I mean, this is an animal that's been unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.
Starting point is 00:48:22 They're so honed to do what they do best that I don't think a great white shark thinks that we're a seal or a sea lion or whatever. And I don't think it really matters what you wear. They have so many different cues to what a seal acts like and looks like and smells like. They know when they're looking at a seal. Oh, fucking yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Unless it's being like dragged through the water quickly and they don't have the time to kind of analyze. What they do with us though, is they do what's called an exploratory bite, where they don't think that we're a seal, but they don't know necessarily what we are and they think maybe this is food. A lot of other animals have other ways to explore that.
Starting point is 00:48:59 They can use their hands, they can use different things. With shark, all they have is their mouth. That's the only way that they can interact with the world. So they'll go up and take a little bite to just figure out, can I eat this or not? Good, bad? Yeah. And with the great white, which is the shark that,
Starting point is 00:49:15 you know, is going to be featured here, spoiler. We are so bony for them that almost always that bite is enough for them to think, I'm going to waste more energy processing this than I'm gonna gain. So I'm not gonna bother with this. But it because they're such a big animal and have such a powerful set of jaws, that bite can be so devastating that the person still bleeds out. So that's kind of what's often happening this with these these kind of bites, just so you know. That's, we need to figure out a way to communicate to the great white, two bony.
Starting point is 00:49:48 Two bony, don't even try. No bite necessary. I feel like last time we covered sharks with you with this came up and that's really, you know, that's tough, cause what else are they supposed to do? Right, what else? Yeah, they don't have any other way to figure it out. It's not their fault they're so big, we're so small.
Starting point is 00:50:05 Right. Yeah. They don't have hands. They don't have hands. They would look so funny with hands. They would. It would look so funny. We would be a lot less scared of them if they had hands.
Starting point is 00:50:18 Or feet to come out of the ocean, walk up to your door and attack you there. Sometimes they do eat people though. They do, occasionally they will just say, you know what, I'm gonna eat this. And those are the ones that like luckily for the person, it does happen really quickly and it goes really quickly. We love to hear that.
Starting point is 00:50:35 Yeah. I love a fast task. I mean, yeah, that's way, that is way better. Wow. There's so much in your brain, Wes, that I would never ever want to begin to know or think about. And you're just so chill about it.
Starting point is 00:50:55 I have noticed recently when I'm in the open ocean, I think about it a little bit more than I used to. Sure. Interesting. It's becoming more real, less abstract. Yeah, but it doesn't stop me. Watching movies like The Reef. Yeah, yeah. Doesn't help.
Starting point is 00:51:11 Oh Lord, okay, so doesn't matter what you're wearing. Good to know. Honestly, good to know. Do we all agree that we'd stay on the boat in this moment? Definitely. 100%. I would stay on the boat until I absolutely had to get off the boat.
Starting point is 00:51:26 Luke is presenting it like, if we stay here, we'll die of dehydration. I don't know. Yeah. And the other way is also really bad. I can see this. It's like you want to do something. You want to do something. He's able to convince them.
Starting point is 00:51:41 So they, he grabs his like little backpack. Did they have any water at all? I had one bottle of water. It bothered me because there's like apples bobbing around in the water and stuff. Like all of this boat is like fully packed with food and they're like, all right, let's get out of here. Yeah, they seem unconcerned with like survival supplies.
Starting point is 00:52:00 Yeah, it's like, then what happens when we get to the island? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. He also grabs a like, then what happens when we get to the island? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. He also grabs a knife, which he seems to forget that he has immediately after cutting the boogie board in half. And so they jump in the water, they set off- All of them?
Starting point is 00:52:17 Just the three, the three that- Oh. So Warren and Kate are staying behind and they make it like 30 feet before Kate's like, wait, I want to come, I want to come. And I really like this because I think the metaphor here is that like falling in love is like swimming through 10 miles of shark infested waters. That's like the level of scary it is because she's like giving in to being with Luke. It's a powerful metaphor. I'm coming. I will go with you.
Starting point is 00:52:50 It's a romance. Very funny to me. But I mean, yeah, like if Joel were about to swim through shark-infested waters and I was going to stay behind on a boat in the middle of the ocean and like, oh, hello Mac. And in theory, like we're equally likely to die or at least like no situation is good. I probably would be like, I guess I'll go where you're going. I don't know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:15 Yeah. Not West, West would be like, hell yeah, boat for me. Because also you get to the island exactly. And what are you going to do? Then survive on the island while the other people like survive on the boat? I mean, it's not like you can go get them. I think they're worried about the boat sinking, but still.
Starting point is 00:53:31 Like, wait until the boat sinks and then maybe swim for it. But I will say, I take a little issue with the phrase shark-infested waters. Sorry. No, it's all right. They just live there. But we just said it twice, but it's like, that's just waters. You know, that's their home. Yes.
Starting point is 00:53:48 If anything anymore, it's human-infested waters. Very true. Human-infested waters. Yes. That's where they belong. Trash-infested waters. Yeah. Yep.
Starting point is 00:53:57 That's their home. We'll just call it. Noted. The ocean. The ocean. The terrifying ocean. It's fine. Yeah. I just, you know, I got to stick up for my sharks.
Starting point is 00:54:05 You got to. So now just poor Warren is by himself on the boat. But I mean, poor everybody, I guess we're all in pretty bad shape, but they're like, okay, bye Warren. Four of us setting out. And at first we're kicking a lot and Luke is telling them,
Starting point is 00:54:25 you know, not so much splashing, not so much splashing. We're kind of laughing. It seems fun for a minute, for literally a minute. And then there's a splash in the water somewhere else, almost like a fly fishing type thing or like a skipping rock, like across the surface of the water. And they're like, what the fuck was that? And then there's a bigger splash.
Starting point is 00:54:48 Something's going on. Only Luke has goggles and he kind of, you know, takes the lead and looks underwater, but visibility is not super great in these waters. So what time is it also? It's day, mid day afternoon Afternoon, afternoon. Afternoon, afternoon. Okay, okay. And he says he thinks it's the school of fish. Now we're feeling a little unsettled,
Starting point is 00:55:14 okay, I don't know. There's stuff in here, reminder, it's the ocean. And then Matt sees in the distance a turtle shell, And then Matt sees in the distance a turtle shell, like a big one, sea turtle shell, floating, which seems like a bad sign. I don't really do that, I don't think. And Matt parts from the group to swim towards it, which I think is dumb.
Starting point is 00:55:43 He's there. You gotta conserve that. You're swimming 10, 12 miles, my dude. But they need to stay together as a group because it makes them appear like a bigger animal. That too. You don't wanna be by dead animals either. That's just not a good place to be in the water.
Starting point is 00:55:58 Right. Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, these are a lot of really good things to think about. All in all, Matt did not have a good idea here. He swims over to the turtle shell, turns it around, and there's this big jump scare revealing its eaten head and fins looking pretty gross. Everyone screams. I don't know how they didn't know that that was going to be what they were going to see.
Starting point is 00:56:30 But it's also like once again, you're in the ocean where like everything that's in the ocean eats things that are in the ocean. Yeah. Where else would they eat? You know, that's like what it is. So Suzy starts panicking from this and just it's such a nightmare. All of this is such a nightmare. It's just like, I guess we just keep swimming. I hate this so much. We cut back to Warren on the boat and he's hearing a lot of splashes and the camera's doing a thing that every time he turns to look, we're just seeing the kind of water moving. We've just missed whatever has splashed out of the water. Does it feel like seven times in a row? Just like, what was that? What was that? What was that? Finally, we see a very big shark cut to the four of them swimming and Susie sees something in the water and says, I just saw something. They're all like, Susie, you're freaking us out. Stop. And she's like, no, I'm serious. There's something here. Something is following us. And she's looking in the
Starting point is 00:57:42 distance and she goes there. And of course, as everyone turns and looks, it's gone again. She's like, don't, there, there. And nobody else is seeing it. Luke puts on his goggles and he's looking underwater and sees the shape of something pretty big, but it's far enough in the distance that he can't quite make it out yet. And this is when I was like, Ooh, that's like an interesting position for Luke to be in. I might be like, it's totally fine. There's nothing. Well, I mean, yeah, the thing is, I mean, that would be very bad and it would be hard not to be thinking about and be scared of it. But it's also like, it doesn't matter
Starting point is 00:58:19 if something is fault. Like you have, there is only one option. Just keep going. Yeah. Just keep swimming and hope that you make it. Right. This is too with sharks, pretty much every species of shark that do attack humans, something that triggers them is splashing and a lot of commotion.
Starting point is 00:58:37 So if you get panic and you start splashing a lot and like really creating a lot of commotion, they think that you're in distress and that for them is an opening. So you wouldn't want to panic anyone. You would want to keep people as calm as possible for as long as possible. Because once that splashing starts happening,
Starting point is 00:58:55 the shark is going to come in closer. But yeah, Luke unfortunately does tell them there is something in the water. Oh great. And a panic does ensue. Of course there's something in the water. And a panic does ensue. Of course there's something in the water. There's all kinds of stuff in the water. And then they're splashing
Starting point is 00:59:17 and the thing is coming closer. Eventually we see a big fin pretty near them. We're all screaming, freaking out. Luke is trying to see underwater, but there's a lot of bubbles from the splashing, and he's looking, trying to see what is it. And we finally get our first clear look. This is a great white, and it's a big one.
Starting point is 00:59:37 And it's right there, and it's circling them. We're screaming, we're splashing. How big are great white sharks? I don't even know what the scale is. So big, so big. Adults are like 12 to 18 feet long on average. That's pretty big. But they've reported them 20 feet plus.
Starting point is 00:59:55 So they can get really, really big. My God. How big were the ones that you saw? The biggest one I saw was probably like 16, 17 feet long. And they're wide, they're really heavy shark. I can't remember how much they weigh, but they are the biggest macro predatory shark on the planet. So that's like, like whale sharks are micro predatory
Starting point is 01:00:19 where they're eating like krill and little fish and stuff, and they're much bigger. This is a shark that eats meat, that eats fish, it eats marine mammals. So of the like macro predatory sharks, this is the biggest one. They seem big. Also responsible for the most attacks on humans.
Starting point is 01:00:35 Interesting. Yeah. Interesting. Is it close with tiger sharks? Yeah, so the top three are great whites, tiger sharks, and bull sharks. There are a lot of shark attacks that go like the species isn't known, and a lot of those are probably bull sharks.
Starting point is 01:00:50 So bull sharks are probably higher than what we think, and oceanic white tips are probably higher than what we think. But great whites are the most by a decent margin, and they're definitely the most when you're looking at fatalities too. Because of that big bite. That big old mouth. Yep. Big old mouth. And of that big bite. That big old mouth, yep. That big old mouth. And is that more like location based?
Starting point is 01:01:10 Is that the reasoning behind that? Or are they just, you know, they need to eat more because they're so big. They are, they're like a highly migratory shark species so they're constantly traveling and feeding. Whoa. That's part of the reason why they don't eat us too because they really need the dense
Starting point is 01:01:26 fat of like marine mammals and whatnot to support a big body and their migratory nature. So they're not necessarily looking for stuff that doesn't give them a really good return on their investment. But they often hang out near seal rookeries and places where people hang out as well. So we're sharing a lot of space with this animal and surfers, swimmers. And they're pretty widespread too. You can find them like from Patagonia all the way up to Alaska.
Starting point is 01:01:58 So yeah, they're all over. But something that I learned recently is that there are, is this correct, only 3,500 Great Whites in the world? There's not really a good number on them, to be honest. But it's like not as many as maybe you think. Yeah, but I would guess it's more than that. Well, that's good. Honestly, 3,500 is too low. Yeah, because they're so migratory and they're a really elusive shark,
Starting point is 01:02:24 we don't have a really elusive shark. We don't have a really good idea how many there are, but there are some hot spots for them. Australia being one of them, South Africa, California. Yeah, there's a few places where they're doing really well. So I actually heard there's probably roughly that number on the coast of California. And then throughout the world, there's a lot more. Mostly in San Francisco though, right?
Starting point is 01:02:47 I think that. It was, right? They seem like San Francisco types. They're doing pretty well in California and they use Southern California as a nursery. So like Malibu, La Jolla, a lot of those beaches on any given day, if you put up a drone, you'll see a young great white shark out there.
Starting point is 01:03:08 Wow. Yeah. They use it as a nursery. They do. Sweet. Yeah. And those little ones, the juveniles don't attack people. So.
Starting point is 01:03:17 Aw. Great. But every once in a while, there's an adult too. So I'm not gonna say. Well sure, they gotta come from somewhere. Yep. Wow. Wow, wow. Okay, noted.
Starting point is 01:03:33 Luckily I don't go in the ocean. It's too cold. I'm so scared of it. It's cold and I get scared immediately. And it's not even that I'm thinking about sharks. It's the, I guess it's sort of about sharks, but it's anytime I can't see below me, I don't like it. Right, and it's like, I'm a land creature.
Starting point is 01:03:53 This is not where I'm meant to be. I feel it immediately. Unless it's crystal clear, deeply calm waters. Yes, I can handle that. I don't like a wave. I don't like any, I don't like the waters. Yes, I can handle that. I don't like a wave. I don't like any, I don't like it. The ideal for me is when you go to a beach where the tide is really low and it's really still
Starting point is 01:04:12 and the water's really clear and you go out a little bit and then there's like a sandbar. So you're in the ocean, but you're really still on land. Like that's the kind of ocean experience I'm trying to have, yeah. Well, I'll give you guys some tips later that might help you be a little bit more confident. But I'm a big believer that if the ocean makes you uncomfortable, don't go in the ocean.
Starting point is 01:04:30 I don't think that's a bad way to live your life. It's a fair rule of thumb. Yeah. And it's like, truly, it's just so easy to avoid. Not for me. I love the ocean. Well, yeah. I do love the ocean too.
Starting point is 01:04:44 I got to say, I do love swimming in the ocean. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. I do love the ocean too, I gotta say. I do love swimming in the ocean. I love... I actually really like a big wave. That's a record show. I like a big wave. Yeah, me too. I'm happy to do it. So do both of you think space is scarier than the ocean? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:59 Yeah, but I'd love... I'd jump on the chance to go to space too. Wow. Wow. I would not. I don't think I could do it. I don't think I could do it. And the chance to go to space too. Wow. Wow. I would not. I don't think I could do it. Nope. I don't think I could do it. And also don't get me wrong.
Starting point is 01:05:10 I don't have any interest in like exploring the ocean. I just would like to swim in the ocean. I do like swimming in the ocean. That makes me happy. Great. Hey, everybody's different. Mm-hmm. So these four are in the ocean.
Starting point is 01:05:20 Right. Okay, so this is bad. They're having a pretty bad time. There is a great white shark currently circling them. So these four are in the ocean. Okay, so this is bad. They're having a pretty bad time. There is a great white shark currently circling them. And then it launches past Kate and grabs the boogie board from her. That's kind of funny. Gets right on top of them.
Starting point is 01:05:40 Yeah, he wanted to go boogie boarding. He's like, hey, I want that. This is the only part that looks, you can see the CGI in it. But for the most part, these are all just real shots of great white sharks. And Kate is, I mean, everybody's screaming, Kate is fully in shock, not moving, breathing. Luke has to be like, breathe, breathe in, breathe out, breathe in. And so he's focused on Kate. Suzie's just freaking out. And Matt sees the boogie board pop up like 20 feet away and looks at the group and looks at the boogie board and he's like, oh,
Starting point is 01:06:19 we need that boogie board. And once again,, decides to leave the group. Oh Matt. And I think again with the splashing, Luke did not, I feel like make it clear enough about, what was that from? A bunch of balloons just came up on my screen and I don't know why. Well, it's also like the boogie board should indicate
Starting point is 01:06:50 where the shark is because it took the boogie board. So. No one's thinking clearly here, you know, it's a stressful situation. Yeah, but he makes a decision to swim as fast and splashy as he can towards the boogie board. Splash, splash, splash, splash. Which you're never going to be able to swim faster than a shark. No.
Starting point is 01:07:14 And the splashing has got to stop. And he obviously gets attacked. Oh, God. I think we just see him get pulled under and then he pops back up a little ways away. Everybody's screaming, Matt, water is filled with blood. And they're swimming towards him coming to rescue him. And he's saying like, no, no, no, get away.
Starting point is 01:07:40 My leg is gone. My leg's gone. His leg is gone. And he's like, just leave me. Ah! But they don't listen. They're all swimming towards him. It's very, it's like devastating. That's really scary and sad. Yeah, that's so sad.
Starting point is 01:07:55 And they're holding him. The water is so bloody just in this pool of blood. And he's like begging them, like, oh wait, it's gonna come back. Like I'm, I'm. Well, we learned that maybe it wouldn't. It's possible. Maybe it would. True.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Maybe it would have been like, that was bone. That was bone, I don't need it. True. But sadly he bleeds out very quickly and dies in their arms. It's devastating. I'll remind you, Kate is his sister. She is. Oh, Kate is his sister. She is...
Starting point is 01:08:25 Yeah, oh, I forgot about that. Yeah, she is sobbing. I mean, everybody's just freaking out. It's very upsetting. They let go of his body. He drifts away. They're crying. And Luke sees the shark come back
Starting point is 01:08:44 and take Matt under again. So, seems like he is interested in eating these people. Get back to the boat? How far away are they from the boat? Too far at this point. Too far. I don't know, hope that it's distracted and alone. Are they usually alone?
Starting point is 01:09:02 Yeah, great whites are super solitary. Yeah, they're always alone. I mean, if there's a really good feeding opportunity, then you can have multiple sharks in one spot. But they're not socializing. They're just all there for the same reason. Not here to make friends. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:17 Introverts of the shark world. Yeah, I get it. Now, you guys, it's getting dark. It's getting to be nighttime, which is so scary. And Suzy is hearing things. She says to Kate, did you say something? She's like, I swore you just said something. And we're like getting maybe a hint of dehydration
Starting point is 01:09:42 or swallowing saltwater. Like there would be other things that would be bad, obviously, in addition to the shark circling you. And Susie loses it, starts screaming at Luke, "'You said it was gonna take us three hours, and now we're lost in the middle of the fucking ocean, in the middle of the fucking night.'" Fair enough, I would be mad as well.
Starting point is 01:10:04 Mm-hmm, same. And Kate turns to Luke and says, fucking night. Fair enough. I would be mad as well. Same. And Kate turns to Luke and says, it's not your fault. It's not your fault, Luke. It's okay. It's all right. And tries to calm everybody down. Calm Suzy down. You know, we're in this situation now, so nothing really to be done. And they hear splashes around them, but it's dark now so we can't really see what's happening. And we just see the shot from underneath them.
Starting point is 01:10:30 So we just see their legs kicking, and then it fades to black, and we come back the next morning. So, well, it comes back showing two of them floating on a boogie board, but then quickly reveals that Kate has just drifted slightly away from them, but they're all pretty near each other. So everyone has survived the night.
Starting point is 01:10:52 Just the idea of your body being in the water for that long freaks me out. Just that freaks me out. It's like that is not what's supposed to be happening. You get so gross. Well, you know in the USS in the I know. Don't remind us. Don't remind us.
Starting point is 01:11:11 That is obviously exactly what I'm thinking about. Yeah. I mean, I feel like my skin starts getting gross after. Oh, yeah. 20 minutes in the baths. Yeah. Easily. Oh. So.hmm, easily. Oh, so. And you would just be so tired.
Starting point is 01:11:28 Yes, and Kate does say that around now. She's like, I'm so sore. They're so tired. It seems like they managed to sleep a little bit, which is interesting. Sure. And also that they survived the night would be like, I guess, because you're just being still,
Starting point is 01:11:44 maybe you're just being still, maybe you're less interesting. This isn't a shark that hunts much at night. Okay. Yeah, they have poor night vision. They do use their eyesight quite a bit when they're like making their final approach. So.
Starting point is 01:11:56 Seems like that could have been a good time to really swim through the islands. Yeah, this is when you want to go for it. There are other species out there that do pretty well at night, but this one isn't. Sure. One that does a well at night,
Starting point is 01:12:05 but this one isn't one that does a lot of night hunting. Really hope to never need that information. So they wake up in the worst situation. Imagine going to sleep and then waking up and being like, oh, right, oh, still, this is real. But Kate sees an island in the distance, so we have renewed hope. Great. And we see some little rocks jutting out of the water because we're in the reef area.
Starting point is 01:12:39 So there's one pretty close to them, but a small little rock, but just a little stepping stone on the way to the island. And so they swim onto that and they're so relieved. It feels so good to be out of the water for a second. They're like barely out of the water. It's not really big enough for the three of them, but still to be able to just sit on something would probably feel really good.
Starting point is 01:13:09 And Suzy surprisingly is like, we should keep going. We gotta make a, we gotta do this. Like, I'm like, okay, yeah, we do. And so they get back in the water pretty quickly. There's little splashies and we see a fin coming out of the water. And then we see a blowhole and it's a dolphin. Oh my God, we're all laughing.
Starting point is 01:13:33 So what a cutie. Even though dolphins are evil, right? They're really bad and evil. So we should remember that. Westart dolphins evil. Would you use that word? I wouldn't use that word, but I'm Team Shark. I like sharks more than dolphins. But I do love dolphins.
Starting point is 01:13:49 Yeah. Do dolphins... What are the ones that kill sharks? They don't... They can be like... Orcas. Yeah, orcas will kill great whites. And they are a member of the dolphin family. I know. Orcas are evil. Nah.
Starting point is 01:14:02 They're sinking billionaire boats out there for us. They're doing the Lord's work. That's true. Orcas are evil. Nah. No, they're sinking billionaire boats out there for us. They're doing the Lord's work. That's true. Orcas are kind of badass. There is a common misconception though that if you see dolphins, there's not going to be sharks in the area. And the inverse of that is actually true where if dolphins are there, there's something that have brought them that's brought them there that would also be a tempting thing to maybe sharks.
Starting point is 01:14:26 So if you're seeing a lot of sea life activity, that doesn't mean that that's gonna push sharks out. It means that it's probably more likely that there might be sharks in the area. It's not like, it's not a given, but you shouldn't ever feel like, oh, there's dolphins around, I'm good. Right. Like these guys are feeling right now. Yeah. Because, yeah, just moments later,
Starting point is 01:14:49 a bigger fin comes out of the water, Suzy sees it and says, is that still the dolphin? And of course not, it is the great white again. And we're splashing, we're freaking out. Now I can't totally, oh, I think Suzy drifts a little bit away. There's a lot of the like looking under,
Starting point is 01:15:09 we're getting a lot of shots of the underwater, the great white getting closer. And it takes out Suzy. What, okay. And I think she pops back up like 15 feet away from them. Luke swims as fast as he can to her, but she gets pulled down before he can reach her and then does not come back up again.
Starting point is 01:15:33 Oh, God. All right. Bye, Suzy. Suzy's done for. They make it to another small rock before the island, so they aren't rock before the island, so they aren't quite at the island yet, but it's really close.
Starting point is 01:15:49 We're almost there. And we see that Kate's foot is bleeding because she's cut her foot on the reef. And Luke bandages it up. And in this moment, Kate says, I love you, Luke. He says, I love you too. Wow.
Starting point is 01:16:13 It was all worth it. It was worth it. It brought them together. Oh, God. So now we are here in the final stretch. We're just going gonna go for it. And we're swimming as fast as we can. We make it to this island,
Starting point is 01:16:30 but it's not the easiest to get onto it. It is like a big rock with slippery sides. So, and the shark is in pursuit. We're seeing the fin. They know it's there. They know it's coming. We're scrambling to get up this rock. Kate gets up and then Luke is saying,
Starting point is 01:16:47 like, pull me up, pull me up, pull me up. But it's so slippery. Oh, God. No. And he's trying and he's panicking kind of for the first time. I feel like, well, I mean, he's been scared, but he's been trying to keep his cool in this. Now he's like, oh, my God, pull me up, pull me up.
Starting point is 01:17:02 And the shark comes and gets him. And Luke also dies. And Kate is just now alone on this rock that is not Turtle Island. We don't know what island this is. And she's just screaming and screaming. And that's the end of the movie. Oh no, that's the end of the movie? We get some text that says, Kate was rescued the next day. Oh, no. That's the end of the movie? We get some text that says,
Starting point is 01:17:25 Kate was rescued the next day. Oh, God. Okay. In the movie or in the real story that this is based off of? Well, we'll talk about that in a second. Okay. What about Warren? The text also says Warren was never found. The boat or Warren were never found
Starting point is 01:17:42 despite extensive searching. So Kate is the only survivor. Yikes. That's the reef. New final girl. To me. That was...
Starting point is 01:17:52 That was uplifting. And... That would suck so much. I hate that this is based on a true story, but I do need to know what actually happened. Same, same, same, same, same. Yeah. So this is one we actually covered on Tooth and Claw. It's one that I'd heard about a bit when I first saw this movie. So I had always thought about it and we decided to cover it. The biggest difference in the true life story and the movie is that the shark
Starting point is 01:18:22 in the true life story was a tiger shark. And this kind of behavior is much more typical for a tiger shark. They're much more slow moving shark, but they're very opportunistic. They can process a lot of different things. They're turtle specialists, so they can even chew through turtle shell. So yeah, there's a lot of things that make a lot more sense in this kind of situation with a tiger shark, or a shark like an oceanic white tip or something,
Starting point is 01:18:52 that would do this. A great white probably wouldn't follow a group for this long. And, you know, it might come and do that exploratory bite and then be done. But it's not out of the realm of possibility still. Anyway, this happened in 1983. It was this guy Ray Bounty, But it's not out of the realm of possibility still. This happened in 1983. It was this guy Ray Boundy, his two friends Dennis and Lindy, they were all pretty young.
Starting point is 01:19:15 They got on a trawling boat. They were going to go trawl for prawns outside of Townsville, Australia, which is a stupid name for a city in my opinion. Townsville. Townsville. Anyway... I'm gonna go troll for prawns in Townsville. Yeah, Townsville. It's like Richard Scarry's busy town. Townsville. They go out and it didn't take long for some really high winds to kick up. Their boat flipped, just like in the movie. And just like in the movie, they decided that the boat's gonna sink,
Starting point is 01:19:45 they need to make for sure. The big difference is they thought the closest shore was like 45 kilometers away, which is like 27 miles, which to me seems nearly impossible to get to. But they had enough supplies where they built kind of a makeshift raft out of a surfboard and a few other things. And the three of them hopped on this raft, which got taken apart by high winds, and they ended up floating in the water. Dennis
Starting point is 01:20:12 was the first to be attacked by this tiger shark that showed up. It did bite off his leg just like we saw in the movie. And he screamed out my leg, my leg, it's got my leg. They went to go help him and he pushed away from the group and kind of sacrificed himself. And the Ray saw the shark actually lift him out of the water and take him down. And then Lindy was attacked next. It grabbed her by her midsection
Starting point is 01:20:38 and pulled her away from Ray. And she like went down with just like one little yelp and she was underwater. And then Ray saw a reef, swam forward as hard as he could with the shark in pursuit, managed to get up on this reef and almost as soon as he was up, a helicopter showed up and rescued him. Wow.
Starting point is 01:21:00 So he survived to tell the tale. Whoa. And I do think there's like this footnote here where no one else saw any of this. So this is all based off of his telling of the story. So it's hard, you know, you can't always take these things. I don't think he killed him. I do think the shark got him.
Starting point is 01:21:18 Now that's interesting. That's interesting. Let's get into the humans are the actual predators. Mm-hmm. That's true. We cover a fair amount of stories like this where there's one eyewitness. Let's get into this. Humans are the actual predators. We cover a fair amount of stories like this where there's one eyewitness. And so you do always kind of have to point that out where who knows. One eyewitness of something like the most dramatic thing
Starting point is 01:21:36 that could ever happen. Yeah. So, yeah. And he was alive when this movie came out. And I know he said that if it was even close to how it happened, it would cause him a lot of pain. Yeah. Yeah, I would not want someone to make a movie out of my personal experience.
Starting point is 01:21:52 Yeah, I will say we've covered a number now of shipwreck situations like this. And if you are in tropical or temperate waters and you bob around in the ocean long enough, sharks are going to show up. That's just going to happen. I would say do whatever you can to stay out of the water as long as possible because there are these sharks like a tiger shark, oceanic white tip that they essentially live in a desert. There's not much food out there for them. So when they find something that is potentially a source of food, they will follow it for days or weeks as long as it takes for them to finally get at it. And you're just stuck with them at that point.
Starting point is 01:22:33 That's what happened with USS Indianapolis. It's what happens. So sharks aren't, I tell people like, you really don't have to be afraid of sharks in the ocean if you do some precautions. But if you're out there bobbing around after a shipwreck, you do have to be afraid of sharks. There's a good chance that you're gonna run into some.
Starting point is 01:22:54 And there's a good chance that if you're in the water long enough, they're gonna get at you. So it is a scary situation. It's devastating that I'm obsessed with boats, but I just don't think I can go on them, unfortunately. I just have to go to ship museums. Yeah, I was gonna say, there's a real way to explore a love of boats on land.
Starting point is 01:23:14 This is also, all I can think about is, Silas has this book called Rescue Squad Number Nine that he's been making me read nonstop to him. And I actually, we got in a kind of a fight about it when I was putting him down for his nap, like it's two hours ago, because- I'm actually kind of pissed at him right now. We did. We got into it a little bit because he was like, this book. And I was like, Silas, I have been reading this to you nonstop. Please, please, can we take a break? And he
Starting point is 01:23:41 literally, the second he heard resistance from me, he just started like screaming. He was like, ah! And I was like, okay, fine, fine. I will read this book to you again. There's no actual story. There's no like words even. It's all just pictures of a helicopter and a boat and people in like rescue gear going out to save a person
Starting point is 01:24:05 who is trapped in their boat on rocks with their dog. And a man has to jump from the helicopter and save her and save the dog. And there's no story. So I have to like insert the story basically myself. Next time insert the story of the reef. Then he won't like it anymore. And he is the last survivor and his two friends went first and there was a tiger shark.
Starting point is 01:24:30 Every page has just the sounds of the machines. So it's like thup, thup, thup, thup, thup, thup. That's all the words. That's the text for the helicopter. Weird. Or vroom, vroom for the boat or whatever. Classic boat sound. And anyway, we've been reading it
Starting point is 01:24:45 over and over and over again. And that has a happy ending. The woman is saved. The dog is saved. Everyone cheers. There's a big celebration at the end. There's a thank you rescue squad number nine. Interesting concept for a children's book.
Starting point is 01:25:00 Yeah, it's really weird. Kids are obsessed with like danger and how to protect yourself in dangerous situations. It's like Silas' whole pathology. It's like the only thing he wants to read about or hear about or he just wants to know about the people who, like, rescue you from dangerous situations. And I don't know what that means,
Starting point is 01:25:21 but it is something that I'm really immersed in right now. Sure. Yeah. And I don't like hearing about it outside of children's books, I gotta say. Don't listen to our podcast then. I know, I, God, truly like, you're such a good storyteller, Wes, and these stories are so fascinating,
Starting point is 01:25:47 and I cannot handle the reality of these stories. I can't, it's like, I just can't believe that this happens. Yeah. I can't believe it. I think though, like the thing to remember here, and I think this is something I really liked about the reef, is that they don't portray the shark as, like, some bloodthirsty monster. You know, I think this is a really good depiction
Starting point is 01:26:16 of what this could look like in real life. Where it circles for a while, it's curious, it starts coming in closer, it does an exploratory bite, and then the shark decided what it got, you know? But that's natural behavior. This is an animal acting like an animal. It's not, you know, revenge-driven or like, it's not bloodthirsty or a monster.
Starting point is 01:26:42 It's just being... Or evil like dolphins, like how dolphins are evil. Exactly. It's not sexually assaulting anyone. or a monster, it's just being... Or evil like dolphins, like how dolphins are evil. Yeah, exactly. Your words. It's not sexually assaulting anyone. It is acting like what a fish does. This is a big fish. And I think a thing that we have... Hey, you're just a big fish!
Starting point is 01:26:58 That's all they are. And the nice thing is, because this is a relatively simple animal, there are things that we can learn about them that can reduce our chances of having an experience like this. For example, in this movie, like Sami was saying, you see a lot of shots where Luke is looking underwater and he's seeing the shark. And that is what you're supposed to do.
Starting point is 01:27:18 You want to keep your eyes on the shark. You want to keep front-facing the shark. And that way, when it comes in, you can put something in between you and the shark. So in this circumstance, I would have grabbed one of those pieces of boogie board and I would have tried to keep it in between me and the shark and even bump the shark with it.
Starting point is 01:27:34 And the way that works is these are surprise predators. They are ambush predators. So they wanna sneak up on you and hit you when you're not paying attention. If they see that you're paying attention, it kind of kills it for them. They don't really have an open. Yeah, exactly. So that's one thing you can do, especially if you're stuck in the water.
Starting point is 01:27:56 Would you maybe remember that you have a knife in your backpack and have that handy? Yeah, I would definitely like being stabbed or they don't like being stabbed. They don't like it, but it probably wouldn't be enough to stop it. And honestly, like even with the thing that you're keeping in between you and it, you don't necessarily want to hit it with that because that can, it can antagonize them.
Starting point is 01:28:20 You're really just keeping something between you and the shark. So if it comes in, it bumps that and it thinks, okay, there's a barrier here. There's not a way for me to get in at this prey item. That works really well. You want to avoid going in the water, dawn and dusk. You want to avoid swimming in murky water, or water where there's some sort of weird marine activity going on.
Starting point is 01:28:38 If there's like a dead animal or lots of animals around, you might just want to avoid it. And then another thing that really helps is if there is a shark coming in at someone, people that intervene can actually stop that from happening. So if you jump in the water and help your friend out, even if your friend's been bitten, that's often enough to discourage the shark
Starting point is 01:28:59 where it doesn't come in again. So that's something else you can do. But- You've got to be so brave. Yeah, I will say there are animals that we talk about on our podcasts where there's like things that you can do to stop that interaction. If a shark decides that it wants to come in,
Starting point is 01:29:14 it's going to come in. So really though, the one way that you can stop this is by not going in the ocean. So if you are this scared of this animal, then yeah, maybe the ocean's not the place for you and that's okay, you know? But the worry in my mind is always that people are going to think this is a more dangerous animal than they are because they're not. If they thought that we were prey, every single day there'd be people being attacked by sharks
Starting point is 01:29:39 and there's really not that many. There's somewhere between like 80 to 90 unprovoked attacks a year worldwide. Like there's millions of people going in the water every single day. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Yeah, that is really low. That's a really good point. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 01:29:56 And only a handful of fatalities too. Like less than 10 fatalities a year. So generally it's the shark just bumping or biting, person gets bit, they get out of the water, they're fine. They're totally fine. That's what's important to remember is they're 100% fine. Yeah. I do feel like a lot of people that get bitten by sharks go back in the ocean.
Starting point is 01:30:19 Yeah, well, cause a lot of time it's like the ocean is their favorite place. Yeah. So, you know, that's why they were in a shark's path to begin with. Yeah. Yeah. I love sharks. I really do. Wow. They are. They're fascinating and like incredibly impressive. And I I'm obsessed with the fact that they how long they've been alive
Starting point is 01:30:39 and how unchanged they are. That is so wild. Yeah. Sharks and alligators? Yeah. Are they like the two prehistoric or whatever? Where God, God went, I got it right. I don't gotta worry about those. Oh man, thank goodness there are sharks and alligators
Starting point is 01:30:57 that that work is done for me. Great, moving on. Yeah, they're amazingly beautiful, wonderful animals. And they have so much more to fear from us than we ever will from them. Yes. Yeah. How many sharks do humans kill every year? It's upwards of a hundred million a year. Holy shit!
Starting point is 01:31:17 Yeah. A hundred million? Just in the time that we recorded this, over ten thousand sharks have been killed. So, it's completely unsustainable. Oh my God. Wait, how? How is that? How are we killing?
Starting point is 01:31:30 Will some people eat them? Yeah. A big part of that shark finning. So especially in some Asian countries, shark fin is considered a delicacy. It's often eaten at weddings. And a lot of sharks are killed for that industry. There are like a lot of changes happening there to try and stop that. But then a lot of them die is like just bycatch from the commercial fishing industries too.
Starting point is 01:31:54 So they're fishing for whatever and they just catch a lot of sharks and they don't survive that. So it's an insane number of sharks that are dying and it's gonna have a huge effect on our oceans. So they're an animal that I wish was a little bit more lovable. I wish they were a dolphin or a whale, because I think you'd have a lot more people caring about their plight, but unfortunately they're not and people are scared of them,
Starting point is 01:32:21 so that kind of feeds this fire of like, well, who really cares if that many sharks are dying? That is so many. Bears are cute. Bears are very cute. And fuzzy. And a lot of the other scary animals are also pretty cute. And that- Should we just not be, should we not be eating fish? That's the personal decision that I made
Starting point is 01:32:42 when I learned about all this. I stopped eating seafood in 2011, and it's in large part because of what was happening with sharks. Wow. Because even when things have like sustainably caught or there's like no way to actually prove that, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:57 Or like there's not a lot of oversight in that area. The only way I'll eat is if I catch it myself. And I think everyone has to fight their own battles. There's so many out there that it's impossible to fight them all. But there is... It's really hard to know what you're eating when it comes to seafood. And you can eat sustainable fish. You can even eat sustainable shark. But you have to be really careful about it.
Starting point is 01:33:19 And for me, it was so... For like three or four years, I tried to use the apps and the charts and everything to pick sustainable options. And I felt so annoying at restaurants that I finally was just like... It's a lot of work. It is. So I just cut it out. And yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:33:35 They're an insanely beautiful animal. And they're so important. And they have a really important place on our planet. The one thing that we like that Eli Roth did was make a documentary about sharks. Yeah, but fuck that guy, right? But other than that, he's on our shit list. Well, you did one good thing.
Starting point is 01:33:56 Good for you. Yeah. Wes, once again, this has been so informative and fun. So wonderful. You're the freaking best. Thanks for having me on again. Thank you been so informative and fun. You're the freaking best. Thanks for having me on again. Thank you, Wes. My goodness.
Starting point is 01:34:09 Well, you'll get your plaques soon. Oh, yeah. It'll be coming in the mail in like six to seven months. As soon as Silas loses all his fingernails, we'll put the plaques together. We'll put it back to work on making those plaques. Will you tell our listeners, if they don't already already know where they can find you and about Tooth and Claw? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:28 So I host Tooth and Claw with my two co-hosts, my little brother Jeff and our best friend Mike. It is a podcast about animal attacks, but it comes from an animal perspective. We like to think that we're telling a fair side of that story and we're looking at it from a biologist's point of view. I'm a wildlife biologist. We're trying to desensationalize these stories and teach people what they can do to prevent having a similar encounter
Starting point is 01:34:53 with all sorts of different kinds of wildlife. I am a bear expert. That's what I've worked with in my career. But through this, I've learned a lot about a lot of different animals and we tell all sorts of different stories. And it's a really fun time. So check it out. It's the best. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:35:09 I was on an episode, if you need an entry point that you're like, I love to watch, could I go straight into another episode of a podcast? Yeah, the leeches episode. You're going to want to start with leeches. Very nasty stuff. It's a fun episode. We actually, the three of us talked recently and we all decided that you were our favorite guests so far.
Starting point is 01:35:30 Wow. I'm honored. We're definitely gonna have you back. Maybe we'll make it like an October tradition or something. Yeah, a little, some Halloween spooky themed animal thing. I'll be back anytime. Oh, Wes, this is great. I always really, I feel like I really learned. Me too, me too.
Starting point is 01:35:52 And you know what? I do, I actually truly, and I'm not just saying this, I do have a better appreciation for sharks than I did 90 minutes ago. So. Good. Yeah. Yeah. And I will not be going in the ocean. And that's fair. And that's okay. Yeah, and that's okay. Yeah. And I will not be going in the ocean.
Starting point is 01:36:05 And that's okay. Yeah, and that's okay. Yeah, that's all right. Yeah. Well, we end every episode with an accent and I forgot to ever do it, but they all obviously have Australian accents in this movie. Obviously, and pleased yours is so good.
