This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for
those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily and I am too scared to
watch scary movies. I am Henley and I'm also too scared to watch scary movies, just deeply curious
about them. I'm Sammy and I like scary movies and I like telling my scared friends about them.
And I like making my friends feel very scared. And that's what this very scared and that's what this is and that's what
this is and that's why we're here um did anything scary happen to any of us um i had a scary and a
cute thing happen to me oh thank god it was both cute and scary um i was taking my trash out yesterday and I walked into my driveway and turned the corner
and there was a cute little baby bobcat.
Baby bobcat?
In my driveway.
Aww.
And we just, he was sitting there and looking at me and I looked at him.
He was sitting.
And at first I thought it was a normal cat.
And then I was like, this is kind this kind of large normal looking cat and then um and then
it got up and skittered away and it had like a very distinctive bobcat tail and it was definitely
definitely what it is yeah i think so yeah sorry i i said it with and then immediately
questioned myself like take it back um anyway yeah So it was like a small bobcat.
And it was definitely because our neighbor has seen one as well.
So we have bobcats living in our driveway.
Wow.
You have bobcats.
I had a scary thing.
I went to a bar and didn't drink alcohol.
It's very impressive.
I am doing dry January.
You're more than halfway through i've never
i've never done that before it was crazy i'm impressed it was it wasn't so bad but it is hard
though it was in the moment yeah i mean we're what three weeks into three weeks into dry january
i'm getting pretty over it i will say oh yeah um are you like sleeping better though? Do you feel better?
I'm under a lot of stress at work.
Right. So I think that's counteracting a lot of the benefits.
But the drinking probably would not
make that worse because it's a downer. It's a
depressant. So that would probably not help the
anxiety.
Correct. So that's good.
Yeah. Proud of you. Really proud of you.
Really impressed. Thank you guys so much
i'm doing dry january too but i've drank three times so
does that still count uh i mean it's all about intention um i i had a scary thing happen to me
you guys already um know about it but whatever um i was having a lovely, it's a long weekend. I was having a nice long weekend and
was like, you know, I'm going to do a face mask. That sounds really nice. I took a shower and I
was like, I'm going to do my face mask. And it was one of those like paper sheet masks that you
buy anywhere and put it on my face. And pretty quickly I was like, I don't know how this feels oh and I took it off it looked in the mirror
and it looked like I was still wearing a mask because my whole face was bright red and hot
and um as I immediately just googled that that mask that brand and a bunch of articles came up
about it having been recalled five days prior.
Oh, good, good, good. Because it was burning people's
faces. And
I was pretty nervous
what that would mean for me
for the rest of my day. Well, you look
great. Thank you so much.
It did go away
in a few hours.
I put on some
hydrocortisone
lotion and I tried to remain calm and it ended up being okay.
Yeah, your skin looks great.
Thank you so much.
I recommend having a mild chemical burn.
It's just like a really cheap chemical peel.
Exactly.
And you know what?
I've never felt better.
So, yeah. Oh, boy oh boy well should we get into
our scary movie yeah we should okay this week's movie was the ring it came out in 2002 directed
by gore verbinski written by aaron kruger based on the novel by koji Suzuki, starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Brian Cox.
We love Brian Cox.
We love Brian Cox.
And David Dorfman.
And here to talk about it with us
is Aaron Burdett.
Hello.
Yay, Aaron.
Hi, Aaron.
Welcome.
Thank you for having me.
How are you doing?
I love to watch the horror movie,
and this is a great way to do it.
Some say the only way. Some say the only way some say the only way
did anything scary happen to you this week um so i was thinking about it and uh my sister got married
which in and of itself isn't scary but i was in the wedding party and when the wedding started
i was up on stage like there was a like a big kind of stage thing in the church where she
got married so everyone in the church could definitely see me and I realized I hadn't
silenced my phone and so I was in a tuxedo and no one ever calls me or texts me so like I was
kind of like I think I'm safe but I also have this doorbell that goes off and it's really loud and
there's no way to adjust the volume
on the app oh no and I was like
this thing is certainly gonna go off
and I'm gonna ruin the wedding
and like it hasn't gone off like all
day to remind me to turn my
ringer off luckily
it didn't but like literally like my
heart was genuinely like beating in my throat
and like I was
like yeah yeah the vows the vows, the vows.
But please.
You did not ruin the wedding, but you had a terrible time.
Yeah.
I didn't focus on anything.
I didn't hear anything they said.
Like, who knows if they love each other.
That was the exact time Sammy texted you about coming on this podcast.
It was like right in the middle of the ceremony.
And the ringer I have for her is just a scream.
I actually, I went to a wedding one time where I don't think I should have even been invited
to this wedding.
It was very, very fancy.
And so many people were invited and I felt very out of place.
And I was sitting in the back and I was like, what am I doing at this wedding?
And then partway through the ceremony, my brother FaceTimed me and I had not silenced
my phone.
And it was so loud. And
not only was I the person who ruined the wedding,
but I shouldn't have even been at that fucking wedding
to begin with. That shows them.
Be more discerning
with your invites.
Yeah. So I
feel your pain. It's horrible.
Yeah. It's the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
My sister's wedding is the worst thing that's ever happened to me. My sister's wedding is the worst thing that's ever happened to me.
Aaron, do you like scary movies normally?
Yes.
You love them.
I do.
What's your favorite scary movie?
Hmm.
Well, I always say The Shining, but that feels cliche now, I guess.
I feel like everybody's favorite one is The Shining.
I mean, it's a good one.
I still, I watched it every
Halloween along with Halloween
The film yes
And I love both of those
Halloween is I guess
I kind of love it not like half ironically
Because I think the actual like stuff that happens
In it is pretty dumb but I love
The atmosphere of Halloween that's in it
Yeah but with The Shining it's just kind of
Like it just feels so
deeply dreadful and
terrifying the whole time.
Without ever being directly
horrifying or
jump scary or anything like that.
Is The Shining also, would you call it the scariest
movie you've ever seen? Or is
there a different movie that's one that's really scared
you more? Honestly, the movie that
has, that scared me the most that I can remember being like there
are two movies that scared me really bad.
One is The Grudge and the other is The Ring.
Oh.
So when like Sammy gave me a choice of some movies that you had requested or something.
Yeah.
And I was like, I think maybe I want to watch The Ring again because I haven't seen it since
I was 17 and it scared the living shit out of me yeah it made me never want to watch it again
but now i'm a big adult yeah you're a huge you're a big grown-up huge adult i'm this giant i'm six
nine by the way nice yeah we forgot to mention um but uh i remember i wanted to talk about this a
little bit because when when i was in i was 17 it came out, I worked at Chick-fil-A.
I saw it in theaters.
It was great.
I got fired from there.
That's another story.
I watched this movie and then I had to work a bunch of late nights.
Oh, no.
And this movie doesn't have anything in it regarding a mirror or a car.
But every time I got in my car I couldn't look
in the rearview mirror for like
right two weeks
because I was constantly sure
I would see a ghost yeah like
this movie made me think that even
though like it doesn't make any sense it has some mirrors
and it has some screens I think that's founded
I think I think I think you were onto
something and they're probably
if I any time I'm spooked anytime I'm spooked I think you were onto something and there probably would have been a ghost.
Anytime I'm spooked,
anytime I'm spooked,
like if I'm up in the middle of the night,
I've just in the past probably year gotten okay about it in my own home,
but certainly in anybody else's home
or hotel or anything,
this is so long.
I'm hearing myself say it
and I'm like,
why isn't she fucking getting to bed?
Wow, welcome to my world. anything if this is so long i'm hearing myself say and i'm like why isn't she fucking getting if it's night and spooky i can't look in a mirror that was the point i always take me so long to say that that was all i was trying to say it's like the whole like closing the mirror
and then there's a werewolf behind you thing or whatever that's what i was gonna say where my
mind would go first but that's bad it's not mine is either, but it's always closing the mirror. I always
assume there's going to be a person.
I think that came from Bloody Mary as a kid.
I was always way too scared to do the Bloody
Mary thing. Candyman.
Mirrors really scare me.
I'm so excited to know
that this really scared you.
We've had a lot of people ask to do
The Ring because they similar like, it was the scariest movie I ever
saw. Are The Ring and The Grudge similar movies?
They're both based on Japanese horror movies that had similar like ghost girls.
Oh, well, they both have weird hair.
Yeah.
Okay.
The Grudge.
Spoiler free if you ever do it on the podcast.
But there's a scene in The Grudge where the ghost girl comes crawling down the stairs
like backwards crab walk.
Like The Exorcist.
Like The Exorcist.
But they also edited it so that her frame rate is weird.
Oh, yeah.
And so she looks...
She's like jittery and shaky.
Yeah.
Ew, ew, ew.
That's terrifying to me.
And then there's one scene in particular in The Grudge.
Can I talk about it?
Yeah, yeah, go for it.
That like hung with me and i will
still sometimes think about which is there's a scene where i don't remember which character is
getting in bed and when they get into like this ghost like stalks people and you like you see that
the ghost is like coming for him you know the ghost is on the way but you don't know how it's
gonna get him and then he lays down in bed and he's laying there for a while and then he kind of like feels something
and he lifts up the sheets and the grudge girl is in the bed with him like looking out of the sheets
and she like screams and reaches at him and i was like oh so nothing's safe yes like it doesn't look
like she's in bed with him it doesn't like there's no like silhouette of her underneath the sheets
she's a ghost yeah she can be anywhere at any time.
And you want the bed
to be like a sacred place.
And she chose to be there?
Come on.
That's a sacred spot.
Disney World girl?
Come on.
Oh my God,
we are going to need a cocktail
for this one.
So thank goodness
it's cocktail hour.
And this week
we're really phoning it in
like the phone that you get a phone call on after you watch a haunted videotape
with a vodka soda. This is a well drink like the well that Samara crawls out of
before she crawls out of your TV and it's clear like the water she floods your room with
when she crawls out of your TV.
To make a vodka soda, you
will need two ounces of vodka
and five ounces of soda water.
Easy peasy, garnish with lemon or lime,
whatever you want, and
enjoy.
I have some
trivia for us.
These questions or are you just going to say? Just facts about. I'll say true or false after each one. I have some trivia for us trivia these questions
or are you just
going to say
just facts about
I'll say true or
false after each one
is that okay
that would be crazy
if you actually did
questions for trivia
we should do that
that could be fun
that could be fun
there's no way in hell
I'd ever get one
we've got some
casting what ifs
we like those
we like those
so this the role
of Rachel
Naomi Watts's
character was originally
offered to jennifer connelly could definitely see that that would that would have worked that
would have worked you got it um then it was she turned it down then it was offered to jennifer
love hewitt oh that's a very weird No, don't like that.
They're all true.
And she also turned it down.
And then they offered it to... You gotta feel great if you're Naomi Watts.
I know.
It keeps going, man.
Okay.
Then Gwyneth Paltrow.
What?
Whoa.
Pretty weird.
True.
True.
Then Kate Beckinsale.
Oh my God. Wow. why does nobody want to do
this movie turn it down turn it down and then finally naomi watts that is interesting i guess
at the time nobody knew this kind of thing was going to be successful i think this was kind of
the first big yeah maybe um because this opened the door i think for the grudge and all the
japanese remakes and it started quite a trend because this movie made a ton of money and they were not expecting it to.
Part of it is because they made it PG-13.
It was supposed to be R.
They had to edit it down a lot and cut out a lot of the more graphic stuff.
But it, yeah, it made a lot of money.
All the full frontal nudity's gone.
Hardcore sex scenes.
In direct contrast to that fun fact, Brian Cox was the only actor considered to play
Richard Morgan.
And he actually turned down a part in Ghost Ship.
Ghost Ship, which if you'll remember, is the movie Jess told us about where the opening
scene, everybody gets cut in half.
What happens?
It's like a rope.
Yeah, like some cable snaps or something.
Yeah, it's a rope ship.
I don't know. Brian Cox.
I wish he could have done both, but
I love Brian Cox. Yeah, he's great.
He's very good. And David
Lynch was offered to direct and he turned
it down. This would have been a very different movie.
Definitely.
It's like so weird. I don't think it could have worked.
No. I mean, it could have.
He can do a lot, but it could have worked no I don't I mean it could have he can do a lot but
it would have been a very different thing
interesting
oh my god okay yeah let's watch it
I'm very scared okay let's watch it
before you die you see the ring
the images on the tape they're
leading us somewhere
they show you the horses
that you and your family
what is it you think you know?
Hello?
Before you die, you see the ring.
You see the ring.
Everyone will suffer!
You see the ring.
You see the ring.
You see the ring.
You see the ring.
You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. You see the ring. that was odd music to be put to the trailer it was an odd trailer i don't think it felt like
the firm or something yeah it's wrong music i haven't heard about this movie since probably
it came out being everyone's watching it and it all immediately came like they're like oh right
there's a phone call oh right you'll die in seven days oh right you want to like yeah i don't fuck i'm really scared it was imprinted on your brain
it really was let's do it though i used to love back to school shopping so much that i would tell
my mom that i wanted to work at staples when i grew up because i just loved getting all the
things that i needed that i would use every day in class.
I still to this day have nightmares about showing up in class without notebooks or number
two pencils.
Really scary stuff.
But luckily I wake up and I realize I don't actually need notebooks or number two pencils
anymore.
actually need notebooks or number two pencils anymore, but this fall there is something that I will be using every day and would be terrified to be caught without, and that's Raycon's best-selling
everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks every day, and so I need earbuds that I can rely
on to listen to all my favorite podcasts, and I know you guys listen to podcasts as well so you
know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon black because that's my vibe but they come
in other cool colors as well like forest green and brush violet but my favorite thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged for 32 hours
and they have a new quick charge function. So 10 minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of battery
life. Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a long morning walk, you forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice
to listen to one episode of a podcast. It's only going to take you 10 minutes. It's incredible.

hello bello.com slash too scary um uh okay so the movie opens with amber tamblyn and her friend katie and becca katie and becca
like hanging out goofing around it's like uh just two high school girls hanging out having a great
time talking about boys and then they reveal that there's a tape that katie watched with her
boyfriend at a log cabin somewhere where they were staying.
And she's well, actually, sorry, I'll correct myself.
Becca first knows she's like, oh, have you heard about this tape where if you watch it, you die in seven days?
And then Katie's like, what are you talking about?
Like, she looks like really scared.
And then she pretends to die.
And then Becca's like, what are you like?
Oh, no.
Like, I gotcha. I can't believe you fell for that. Which one?'s like, what are you like? Oh, no. Like, what's happening?
Gotcha.
I can't believe you fell for that.
Which one?
Wait, is Amber Tamplin Becca?
She's Katie.
She's Katie.
OK, got it.
But I found this very weird.
So, like, that's what Becca does.
And then Katie pretends to be scared of this and then pretends to die.
And then like immediately was like, but there is really a tape.
And I am actually scared because I watched it. Yeah. And she's like, and I am actually scared. And I am actually scared because I watched it.
Yeah.
And Becca's like, what?
And she's like, I watched it exactly seven days ago.
Like at 10 p.m. it will be.
Amber Tamlin watched it.
Yes.
With her boyfriend.
Okay.
So then they get separated for some reason that I'm forgetting.
Oh, the phone rings.
And that's the thing is like the phone is posted.
Someone's supposed to call you and say you die in seven days.
Well, I guess that's when you watch it,
but still the phone is spooky.
Yeah.
The phone's ringing.
It's another fake out.
It's like nonstop fake outs at the beginning of this thing.
And Katie is like,
it's left alone because Becca like goes to deal with something and the TV
turns on in her living room.
Static.
Static.
She walks in.
She's like,
what the hell is this?
Stop being a bitch yeah
she's a great 1996 line uh she turns the tv off and she's like okay no problem and then as she
turns around there's like a weird like kind of shadow that like runs across the tv behind her
and she jumps and she's she's confused so then she like walks upstairs and she hears static again
coming from a different room and as she comes up the stairs she's like looking more and more scared
she's like she starts calling out for becca like what's going on she sees that there's water coming
out from under the door where she's going and then she kind of like creeps up to the door
and like very slowly opens it and then she walks in and then all of a sudden it cuts to her face like a real fast zoom in.
She's screaming and her like face kind of looks like it melts.
It like, yeah, turns like gray and droopy.
Oh, no.
She like looks real messed up.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Something bad happens.
And then that's the end of the opening.
And it just cuts.
Yeah.
So, okay.
Then we meet Rachel, who's's Naomi Watts and she's picking up
her son Aiden from school.
The teacher
asks to speak with her and is
like, I'm a little concerned about Aiden.
I know his cousin just died
and he's like not taking
it well. And here's a bunch of
creepy drawings he drew about it.
So it's the
creepy little boy in the trailer Naomi Watts' son
yes he calls her Rachel
he goes Rachel
infuriating
disrespectful he has like a weird
deep little voice he's like Rachel where are we going
yes
so he's always called her Rachel
even before whatever
yes it seems like it's very
weird he's precocious they keep talking about how
smart he is he's he also
is potentially
precognitive
because they
yes with the drawings you're talking
about so yeah yeah yeah it's like drawings
of her in the grave yeah
in a grave and she's like oh
yeah well like it's affecting
him and she's like she died well like it's affecting him and she's like um she died three
days ago he drew these last week oh no and so he yeah like knew she was gonna die and it was a
surprise death how did she die sounds like she's amber this is katie oh you don't actually know
that at the time okay okay like as it's these drawings, you don't know they're talking about Katie
necessarily, but it's the same girl.
Got it. Got it. They go home. Aiden
is like upset and he's got his little
coke head eyes. He's a
weird little kid. He's
really dilated people. He puts on his own tie.
Oh, right. He is a little businessman.
He's a little businessman. He like sets out
her dress for her in the morning for the funeral
and he's like, it's got some wrinkles on.
I was.
I'm depressed.
It smells like smoke. It's my fault.
I was watching it doing impressions of him. I really I I got really good at his voice and now I can't,
I can't.
I think you were doing great.
It sounded very close to like what he sounds like.
Sounds good.
Okay.
So then they go to the cousin's funeral,
Katie's funeral,
and it's Naomi Watts's sister's daughter.
And the sister says to Rachel, I've never heard of anything like this happening
like i looked i tried to find like the doctors couldn't find anything her heart just stopped
and i want you to look into it because she is a journalist which is like okay but she says like i saw her face and then it like loud cuts to a jump scare that really
got me it like cuts to it's one of the better scares in the movie her face in her closet after
the ring has gotten her i guess and her she's like frozen in like melty terror she looks scary
face so horrifying like that's one of the
best things I think in the movie is like it cuts to
what she like the sheer
like she looks utterly terrified
like there's still like terror on her face
if she's like blue
like veins everywhere she just
looks real gross and the shot
is maybe one second and it just
shows it real quick and you're like holy shit whatever
killed her sucked yeah
it wasn't fun to die the way that she died
right
yeah she says like
asks Rachel to
do some digging and find out
what happened what really killed
my daughter the doctors don't know
you a journalist
who wasn't there
so Rachel goes outside to smoke a cigarette and a few of Katie's friends are out there,
one of which is Adam Brody.
And he basically tells her...
Mail teen number one.
That's how he's credited.
Amazing.
Wow.
Right before OC fame.
Yeah, he has like one line.
But basically she finds out that the weekend before they were at a cabin, four friends and Adam Brody says her boyfriend who she was with killed himself the same night.
And the other two also died.
She finds that out when she looks into it.
Okay.
That to the two other kids that he told her about also died, but he doesn't tell her.
And this is something that I found was weird.
No one seems to know that four kids who were friends all died at the exact same time.
No one mentions that.
She has to use her journalist skills to find it out.
That's a huge reveal.
And they all died in different ways?
It doesn't say.
Well, they all think they do.
I only know that one of them died in a motorcycle accident, and I might have read that in the trivia afterwards.
Or do they say that?
It says it on the... I read it on the newspaper that it
I like positive is that all the info
she gets from the friends yeah then she starts
like doing classic journalism
just like reading stuff at the
library she has like a notebook and a pen
yes she goes to work
her boss her boss tells
her that she's fired and she tells
him to like go fuck himself.
She's like, she says, no, I'm not.
She says, I'm cooking up the juiciest story.
Like, there's no way you're going to want to fire me.
And he's like, no, I mean it.
You're fired.
And she's like, uh-huh.
Like, no.
No, I'm not.
No, I'm not.
And I was like, whoa.
What paper is this?
Why was she fired?
Was there a reason?
No.
No.
They're just like, I've had enough of you.
It seems to be. She has a big personality. No. They're just like, I've had enough of you.
It seems to be.
She has a big personality.
Yeah.
Her son calls her by her first name.
It's funny because she's not like brassy or anything.
She's very subdued and like nice.
Right. And for that one scene, she's just like, I'm not fired.
She's just such a she's just such a dedicated journalist.
She's fiery about her job.
Yeah.
That's probably what it is.
She's committed.
One more thing that happened in the funeral is that they go up to katie's room and she notices in all of her like yearbooks and photo albums
she has scribbled out everybody's face in it just kind of a creepy unsettling detail that
comes back later terrifying so then she like gets on the trail of this cabin basically she just goes
to the cabin which is just like kind of nearby.
They're in Seattle and it's like in the
woods in like Washington, I guess. Yeah.
And when she gets there,
she like is trying to, she's asking
the guy who owns the place, like, what's going on?
Like, did you, do you remember these teens coming in?
And he's like, there's always teens.
And she's like, did they do anything unusual?
And he's like, I think they rented some videotapes. I don't know.
We have a videotape library.
Right.
And she turns around and looks at the videotape library and sees that it's all just like a
bunch of Uncle Buck garbage.
And then one videotape that is blank.
And so she's like, I'm going to watch the blank one.
Of course.
Yeah, I'll take that one.
So she goes into, she rents the cabin and she's like looking around in the cabin like
what happened here?
Everything seems fine and normal and then she's
like oh I'm gonna watch this video to
see what it is which is
you know a problem
yeah it's a problem
so she watches the video did you
happen to write down like everything it shows her because it all kind
of matters it's that's true
it does okay I'll say what I don't have to get into them because i think it also is a little
silly that they all matter personally true but um it's just like crazy quick cuts of a woman
looking in a mirror brushing her hair there's a ladder there's dead horses on a beach there's
some nasty bugs there's some centipedes there's some like cut off human fingers. It's just like.
There's like a shot of water that looks like it is filled with blood.
And then it shows it keeps like intermittently flashing a ring.
Yes.
A ring of light.
Uh huh.
And you don't know what that is.
There's one shot of a mirror where you can see like kind of a girl with long hair like
fade into the background away from the mirror like into the dark
and it's all just like
this super I was saying this
when we weren't recording I think but it's like
super David Lynch II like I think it's funny
that they were considering him for it because like
right this video is just like straight up a David
Lynch nightmare yeah you probably like
pitch this in the initial plan and they're like
we're still gonna use that
but then at the end it just stops so like we're still gonna use that yeah um but then at
the end it just stops so like it shows all these images and then it lands on an image of a well
and then cuts to static and then she's watching it and she looks really freaked out by it
and she's sitting there and then the phone rings yeah and she kind of in in terror, walks over to the phone and answers it,
and then a really creepy girl whispers,
seven days, and then hangs up.
Quick question.
Do you think that it's the same video for everyone?
They see the same thing?
I have that same question.
Or do you think everyone sees a different video?
I think that is an interesting question,
particularly with how the movie plays out,
that I started wondering.
I don't think it makes any
logical sense for
it to be a video that changes
because of the fact that like
four people watched it at once right
and all died or whatever
but the way the movie kind of progresses
it almost feels like it should be different
for everyone right right which
I guess we'll get to yeah
so I think that's it then
after after this she enlists the help of noah right she heads back heads back home her creepy
son no her creepy son is aiden oh right okay um that also would be wild if she did enlist her son
i mean he's an old soul she's like i need, but I don't know who else to turn to except my seven-year-old son.
Yeah.
Who knows how to polish shoes or whatever.
He's a chronic smoker.
Wears a three-piece.
Chronic smoker.
What can I do for you, Rachel?
But so, okay.
So Noah is just a friend of hers.
He's a photographer.
He like works in video stuff.
So one of her journalist contacts, I presume.
Yes.
A video journalist.
We're led to presume.
We're led to presume.
And so he lives in a giant penthouse that no no artist can afford.
Yes.
Filled with like video equipment.
Of all sorts.
He has a bad religion sticker inside of a cabinet
which I thought was very funny.
It's deep in the cabinet.
You could never possibly see it.
You'd never notice it. He doesn't want to be too showy.
Yeah, he's like, I like that religion but not too much.
These are the details
we need about this movie.
And
he's being kind of a dick about the whole thing.
He's like, okay, yeah, like. Well, your niece died the whole thing He's like okay yeah like
Your niece died okay
He's like oh a scary movie
He's like okay like let me see it
And she shows it to him
She doesn't want him to
Cause she's starting to believe that it's
They need to stop doing this
She's believing
She has like started believing it's real
And that she doesn't know what's going on
But she knows that it seems like this video does really lead to people dying.
And she wants him to help her try to figure out...
Basically, she's asking him for help to try to figure out where the tape came from.
Yeah.
But he's like, I can't help you unless I watch it.
And she eventually is just like...
She kind of relents and is like, I guess you're right.
I don't want you to, but I don't know what else I'm supposed to do.
Right.
She reluctantly shows him so he watches it the phone rings after he watches it and he like they walk over and she's like too scared to answer it and he starts to pick it up and she just like
slams it down and is like don't answer it because she i think she thinks if you don't answer it you won't die right and he never gets a phone call why not not answer yeah let's just try that um okay so he says
he'll look into it he's he's gonna help her then we're at the next day this is day two now after
watching the tape it starts counting down also yeah like it's like day one day two because you
know they got seven we got seven we gotta know where we're at yeah and she
she goes and makes a copy of the tape right that's the first thing she does yeah they notice when he
tries to like he's trying to like look at the tracking on the vhs like physical tape because
as they're like looking they're scanning through all the images of it one by one trying to figure
out what is any of this and they land on one that is a view of a coastline
where the dead horses are
and they're like oh what is this and they're trying to see like where
this if there's any distinctive features of it
but they can't quite do it it breaks the
machine that Aiden's using
Noah's using Aiden is
of course the child
come on
of course
so she goes to the highest tech vhs place in the world
in seattle washington and yes like she goes she takes it to this crazy high-tech vhs analysis
place yes and they have technology where she can like scan over on the film and see more and she
manages to see a lighthouse and
so she's like oh also
while this is happening she's like watching the video
and she's noticed a few times as she's panned
through it that there's a fly
like on the
screen and whenever she pauses the
video it looks like the fly is still moving
so she reaches
for the fly. This part's not yet.
This part's not yet. This isn't... This part's not yet.
This isn't happening yet?
This isn't happening yet.
But it's at the VHS place.
Did I jump ahead too far?
You jumped ahead too far.
It's okay.
None of this has happened.
We would never know.
She is at a VHS place.
I don't think it's the crazy one yet.
I think it's maybe just like the vhs room of her her work her
newspaper and she's just making a copy and just the time the time code is going crazy of the tape
and she's like oh that's weird and like there's no numbers on like any of the time code and so
then she like brings the tape back to noah and is like i don't i don't know what's going on here
and he's like well i i need she calls it the control track is messed up.
And this is his technical speak.
He's like, the control track?
It doesn't have a control track?
That's like being born without fingerprints.
So we can't trace where this tape comes from.
Okay.
Because it was born without fingerprints.
Without fingerprints.
Got it.
Got it.
And then...
Then that's when she goes to the high tech place.
Oh, they're in his house his crazy
room and then his assistant comes in who is polyparet csi and he's like come cis it's csi
sorry is it csi i promise sorry it's my favorite tv show okay cut that out cut that out we don't
want you to look stupid i just wouldn't really wouldn't want to get that wrong, you know?
Yeah. Also, you purport to be CSI's number one fan.
I know. I'm wearing so much CSI merch right now.
That's a tell.
I really thought you were talking about someone else.
You said goth girl, like from NCIS?
CSI Henley.
You're thinking of LL Cool J.
That's what it is I'm thinking of Law and Order SVU
LL Cool J
that's iced tea
wait I'm gonna google Polly Perret
okay
leave that in
so she comes in and Noah's like, oh, you gotta like watch this weird tape.
Like apparently, I don't know, it kills you in seven days.
Why would he do that to her?
Because he's not taking it seriously.
He doesn't believe it.
He didn't get a phone call.
And so she like walks over and Naomi Watts like ejects the tape and is like, I gotta
go.
Because she doesn't want her to watch it.
Yeah.
And Polly Pratt's like, what's her problem?
Yeah.
It is NCIS.
Is it?
It is.
It totally is.
No, it's not.
I'm vindicated.
It is.
You know what?
I'm proud to have not known.
What a chance to pick.
You know what?
I love being wrong.
I'm like Joe Pantoliano in The Matrix.
Joke's on you. I'm thrilled.
Oh, yes. Ignorance is bliss, baby.
Ignorance is bliss.
I want to eat steak. Wow.
It feels so good to be right about that.
That's the hill
I'll die on. Your listeners won't believe anything else
I say is the biggest problem. Yeah.
We're going to have to leave all that in, Sammy. It makes me look
really good.
I would like you to leave it in.
I look very stupid.
Okay.
So she takes the tape out, she leaves
and then outside in the alleyway
is the ladder
from the tape where it looks like it.
She sees the ladder and she's like,
what the hell?
It's a ladder that is propped up against nothing essentially against the building that
goes it goes nowhere it's just an enormous ladder yeah and then she starts to climb on the ladder
this makes me laugh this made me laugh out loud when it happened she starts to climb on the ladder
and then all of a sudden a painter shows up and he goes, Hey, lady, that's seven years bad luck. Oh my God.
Climbing a ladder is seven years bad luck?
No, it's not.
Dude, you're going to hell.
You got your things mixed up, dude.
You're dead.
You're bad luck forever.
All you do is climb ladders.
And then he's, I guess, taking his paint to climb up
and paint the wall that didn't need painting.
Yeah.
It's a strange scene.
Very weird.
And okay, so then now we're at day
three. And now she goes to the giant
high-tech VHS place that I talked about
before. That's correct. Yeah.
So she goes in. That's when she does the tracking
thing. Oh, she sees the fly
that's like twitching on the video and she tries
to pick it up. She like reaches for it because
it looks like it's moving. And then when she reaches up,
she manages to actually grab the fly and pull it out of the video and she's kind
of looking at it and it's twitching around and then um the lady who works at the vhs place walks
in and spooks her just says like hello and spooks her and then the fly flies away and then when she
looks up at her her nose is bleeding like profusely oh Oh no. And so whatever interaction she's just had with this videotape like made her nose bleed.
Yeah.
But that's also where she finds the image of the lighthouse.
Yes.
So she's got a lead.
She has a lead.
And what do you do with a lead?
You follow it.
You go to the library.
You go to the library.
You got a research montage.
And we have a research montage featuring a stack of about 25 books all about America's Lighthouses.
America's Lighthouses.
Wow.
And she finds it.
She pours through the books.
She finds America's Lighthouse.
And then she's off to find it, right?
Well, she finds also Anna Morgan, who is the woman that is looking in the mirror in the tape and sees that she had horses.
Yeah. And she remembers that there's horses in the video. Oh, and there's horses in the tape and sees that she had horses. Yeah. And she remembers that there's horses in the video.
Oh, and there's horses in the video. And she just
Googles Anna Morgan
horses and you just see her face
go, oh my God.
But we don't see what she sees. How does she find out that it's
Anna Morgan? It's like
in the lighthouse book?
She finds a bunch of stuff about the lighthouse and
then looks up stuff about the town.
The newspaper, the town that it's in.
So she lives in the town.
She lives in the town by the lighthouse.
There's also something that's going on we haven't touched
on yet with people who watch the film
that I think comes into play here
or around here. Correct me if I'm
wrong. But if you watch
the video, if somebody tries to take
a picture of you yes your face is all
distorted like you look all weird in a picture like it's like a picture can't capture your face
anymore and there's a scene where uh noah goes to a convenience store to buy cigarettes from a woman
who tells him they're going to kill him which another thing i found insane what why is the
lady that you're buying the cigarettes from telling you not to buy them? Right. Anywho.
That's not how capitalism works.
No.
But he goes in to buy cigarettes.
She goes, these are going to kill you.
And then he looks up at the CCTV footage and his face is all crazy.
Oh, that's creepy.
And it won't, like everywhere he moves, it won't fix.
And then I think that kind of makes him finally be like, oh shit, something's really happening.
Yeah.
That's what kind of makes him start to believe.
Because he will only believe videotapes.
Yes.
He won't believe women.
He doesn't believe women, but he does believe videotapes.
Yes.
And then while Rachel's doing some more research, I guess she finds out.
I guess.
She's a journalist.
She's a journalist.
She spends six days at the library reading books about lighthouses.
Well, she's going to die in one.houses good job rachel um that's not true so she she finds out that there was like mass horse deaths
in this town and all of the horses died that's the dead horses on the beach that we saw in the
videotapes and that anna morgan committed suicide um and as she's like reading and finding all this out,
she doesn't notice that her hand is scribbling and she looks down and she
has scribbled out everybody's faces in the newspaper or Anna Morgan's face in
the newspaper.
Like Katie had in her room.
Oh no.
Spooky.
Yeah.
Oh,
spooky.
Oh God. Okay. This is a scene that i don't like i'm scared so she goes back home after her research montage and she calls her sister to take
care of aiden because she's like i got a lot of journalism to do and I need someone to watch Aiden. Inri, your dead daughter.
Remember the thing
you asked me to do?
I'm doing it.
I'm doing it.
And as she's talking to her,
she starts coughing.
And then...
She gets a phone call also.
Oh, she...
Oh, because she hangs up.
She's like,
let me call you back.
I'm choking.
I can't remember.
She's coughing and she says,
yeah, she's like,
let me call you back.
I'm choking.
And then the phone rings as soon as she hangs
it up. And when she answers it, there's nothing
there. But then when she looks at the receiver,
water's coming out of it. So like
water is seeping up through the receiver.
And yeah, and she's
like choking and coughing and she
like reaches into her mouth
and pulls
out. It's worse.
It's hair, right right it's a long it's like
a thick thick long clump
it's like probably
eight feet long wet clump
of hair this is Emily's like worst
nightmare it's so gross it's what stuck with
me the most from seeing it when this came
out I really I like my gag
it's the most physical reaction I've had to something
that's been said.
The thing that's weird though
is she loves it.
She's like,
this is great.
She's like,
this feels good.
I love it.
Yeah, she says,
I love it.
I love it.
She's like,
I love this.
She says,
mm, mm, mm.
Hair.
I love hair.
I love.... She says, mm-mm-mm. Hair. I love hair. My favorite dish.
And on the end of the hair is a, what do you call, like, electrode thing that you stick.
Is that what they're called?
Yeah.
I think that's what you call it.
Like, from doing tests on people, like, at a EKG kind of thing.
Yeah.
Yes.
And then, and then, she's like, where's
Aiden? What's going on? She walks
to Aiden's room. There's water
coming out from under the door
and there's a
creepy little girl sitting in a chair
with the TV's on
TV's on static.
She has hair
all around her face. No face on any side of her yeah just 100
percent hair disturbing for me i don't like it naomi wants is like oh yum
more to eat
and um she puts her hand on her shoulder and the little girl grabs her hand and she snaps awake like it was a nightmare.
But she's got a handprint on her arm now, like a burned in handprint.
So she woke up like in bed?
Yeah, she woke up in bed and she's like, oh, that was weird.
And she's like, what's going on?
Where is Aiden?
Walks outside into the living room.
Here's TV happening. There's like a specific noise. where is Aiden walks outside into the living room hears TV
happening there's like a specific
noise there's something else that I think is really
cool something I really like about
the video and the way they depict
it is there's this really specific sound
the video makes yeah it's like
a high frequency yeah this weird
kind of squeal it just I can't
do it but it's just kind of like a
like it just like does this I can't do it but it's just kind of like a oh i did it it's like a very high frequency tone and my cats really hated it while i was watching
it my cat perked up too whenever it would happen yeah it's like this weird little squeal and i
it's very creepy sounding it's like a great horror noise. Yeah. And she hears that
coming from the room
where Aiden's sitting.
Yeah.
Wait, what day is it again?
Is it day six already?
This is like day four.
I think it's day four.
Oh, okay.
Sorry, I might have stopped
writing them down after a bit.
A whole lot of shit happens
on like days five, six, and seven.
So it's kind of weird
to try to keep up with the
timeline anyway.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
So she walks in and Aiden has just
finished watching the video tape.
Oh no! The phone rings and she like
rips it out of the wall or something. Yeah, she just like slams
it down. She screams like not him or something. I don't remember.
We already learned that that doesn't work.
Not answering it doesn't mean it's Aiden. Oh yeah, she doesn't
answer it and then it rings again and
she answers it and says,
Leave him alone! And it's it and says, leave him alone.
And it's Noah.
And he's like, what's going on?
Like, I couldn't see my face in a CCTV thing.
Like, I believe you now.
What's happening?
And she says, he watched.
He watched it.
And he says, who did?
And she goes, our son.
Oh, big reveal, big reveal.
Our son.
Yeah, huge twist.
Huge twist to everyone.
I think I really did guess.
Huge twist to only the audience.
Wow.
But I did, I remember that when, I don't remember that at all when I saw it as a teenager,
but when I saw it this time, I was like, oh, right.
Okay.
Right.
I guess he's got to have a dad.
There are layers to this film.
Yeah.
So then.
It's the fairy scene.
This is the part where she's like, I got to go check out Lighthouseville.
Yes.
Do you remember what it's called?
The actual place?
It's an island.
It's a spooky island.
Spooky island.
Muesco.
Muesco Island.
It's awful.
It's also Pacific Northwest, I assume, even though it looks like Maine.
Yeah, it does look like maine but so yeah she goes to take this ferry that's going to take her to this spooky island
where the lighthouse was and she's like going across the water and she's just kind of want
like wandering around the ferry and she sees a horse in a like one of those horse like trailers that you pull behind a car
and she
walks up to it and the horse kind of
like shies from her touch
like it doesn't like her and she's
like she tries to calm it down she's like
hey easy boy like and tries to pet its nose
and that really pisses it off and it like gets
really scared of her and starts rearing up
close up of its eye being like yeah
which is something that happens in the video yes so like now you've once again seen something from the video and the horse
like goes ape shit and just starts like kicking the door to its trailer over and over and over
again and like no one hears this on the trailer on the ferry except naomi watts is standing there
going like she starts screaming like for help i I think she's yelling for help. Yeah.
And it kicks the doors off
of the trailer and then just starts running
around the ferry like crazy.
It runs past a little girl who screams
my horse! Daddy my horse!
Which I think is funny
because you would yell the horse's name.
My horse!
She so like this horse is running like crazy all over the ferry and no one can stop it.
It's like completely lost its mind.
And finally, it just runs like Naomi Watts is standing at the edge of the ferry and it just charges her.
And she kind of ducks and it jumps over the side of the ferry.
Its legs clip the edge of the boat.
Oh, my God.
And it tumbles into the water.
Oh, my God.
And then the boat continues over the boat. Oh, my God. And it tumbles into the water. Oh, my God. And then the boat continues over the horse.
Oh, my God.
And then everyone runs to the back of the boat.
And when they look over the back of the boat, blood is like all in the water.
Went through the propeller.
That's not good.
So that's also a shot directly from the video.
That's traumatizing.
Also, the noise you were just making, Emily, was exactly the noise the lady in the grudge
makes. Oh, no.
I remember when I saw... I call her a lady also.
She's a lady.
She's a lady.
And then right after that scene, they
edit in a frame of the
ring. Yeah.
And it's spooky. Yeah. I pointed that out.
I watched it with my wife and i pointed that
out she didn't see it she was looking at her phone it's real quick and i was like you gotta
stop i read it's it's two frames oh i would have said one i would have too thank you for your
honesty oh my god but i would have been wrong just like with csi i know there's one frame of the ring in CSI. Me too.
I heard it was NCIS though.
Ice tea is an SVU.
I'll take that to my grave.
Okay.
So Rachel is now going to see Mr. Morgan, right?
Yes.
Which is husband of Anna Morgan.
Widower. Brian Cox
himself. Brian Cox.
Oh, this is where we get Brian Cox.
Yes. He won an Academy Award for this, right?
Yeah.
For the ring. Yeah, best ring.
And what
does he say in this interaction? I don't really remember
it. The first time she goes to see him,
she tries...
He's like, outside feeding the horses.
He's like, I'm tired of talking about this.
Yeah.
Like, clearly other reporters and stuff
have come to try to talk to him
about the mysterious circumstances
of the horse deaths.
Yes.
And he's like,
I don't talk about that anymore.
And she's like,
I'm interested in your wife.
And that, like,
really seems to make him mad.
Oh, and your daughter oh yeah
because she read in an article that they had a daughter but didn't know her name or any information
about yeah this supposed mystery daughter yes oh no and he says i never had a daughter and he's all
mad yeah and then he tells her to get out basically yeah okay and then meanwhile, Noah is doing some digging of his own, looking for Anna's medical records.
Yeah. He's gone to try to figure out Anna's medical history, which then starts to lead him to the daughter's medical history, too.
Mm-hmm.
Because he finds out that, like, oh, one of the reasons that this woman was committed was because of like something that happened with her daughter.
Right.
Well, he looks in her medical files and she's had like so many miscarriages.
It was like miscarriage, miscarriage, miscarriage.
And and so I think he reads somewhere.
Someone finds out that they had adopted a daughter.
That's what the file says at some point
and
as he's looking through the files
he gets a nosebleed
yes that's right
also I wrote down in this scene
everyone in this movie reads out loud
every time anybody's looking through anything
they're reading it out loud
he's even like miscarriage miscarriage, miscarriage, miscarriage.
What is this?
What is she?
She's a so-and-so daughter.
I forget.
How did Anna Morgan die again?
She committed suicide.
She jumped off a cliff, which is included in the tape.
But she was also committed to him.
Did you say she was?
It doesn't really.
We don't really know.
I don't think she was committed.
She sought psychiatric help.
Oh, OK. okay okay got it
yeah one of the things that you see in the video is a
woman that looks like Anna Morgan jumping off a cliff
got it okay
okay oh it's so okay so
Rachel goes to see
a neighbor the Morgan's
neighbor who is
a doctor and
she says that she's the one that
says they adopted a daughter like
that they couldn't have a daughter so
they adopted one but then in
the file he finds out
that it was she was not
adopted I was confused about
all of the adopted or not adopted stuff
like why yeah why
I think not just I don't know I didn't
feel like I could tell if she was adopted or not
we'll never know I think not just I don't know. I didn't feel like I could tell if she was adopted or not.
We'll never know.
Yeah.
It also doesn't really seem to matter.
It doesn't seem like it matters, but they make a point of her being adopted and then later disproving that.
I think it's like, oh, it's mystery stuff.
So we're going to have a couple of twists and turns about whether or not this girl was adopted.
But it doesn't matter.
Right. Right.
Okay.
And...
To me.
Or me.
Or me.
I don't want to speak for everybody.
Or me.
Okay.
So the neighbor is saying...
Or the neighbor says that she would see...
Once they had the daughter, Samara.
Samara?
Samara.
Samara.
That they... She would start seeing images.
The mother, Anna, like scary images.
And anytime the daughter was around, bad things would happen.
And ever since the daughter's been gone from the town, things have been better.
Yes.
So this daughter seems like bad news.
Bad news.
But also it's kind of depicted that maybe it's anna's
fault right like it's a little bit like you can't quite tell if the girl the daughter is bad or anna
is bad right like having mistreated her or something like that right right right there's
like yeah a question of abuse yeah and also having seen brian cox be like a complete seemingly like
asshole right you're like oh this guy's a bad dad right is he scottish in this
no he's the same kind of american that he is in succession okay perfect which is deeply scottish
yes perfect um at some point i didn't write down the scene but i wrote down aiden has a line
that says because he's starting to like see images now, too, because he has watched the videotape.
And he says she doesn't like the barn.
The horses keep her.
She doesn't like the barn.
The horses keep her up at night.
She lives in a dark place now.
Oh, and she's been talking to him.
Yeah.
He also says, like, the little girl has actively been talking to him.
Right.
And then.
OK, so.
Not about good stuff.
No, it doesn't sound like it.
Strictly politics.
She won't stop talking to me about the Iraq war.
She thinks 9-11 was an inside job.
And I'm talking already.
It's 2002 and she thinks that 9-11 was an inside job oh god
okay so rachel goes back to mr morgan's she's got more questions and he's like seemingly not
there so she just lets herself in she's a journalist she's a journalist yeah she's
running out of time yeah yeah this is pressing um and she goes to his tv which has like
a box of files underneath it this is right after a scene also where noah goes like noah finds out
that there's a videotape of samara that exists ah yes and he tries he tracks down where it's
located he goes in and pretends to be Brian Cox. Yes.
He says he's Brian Cox.
Yeah.
And the guy's like.
From Succession?
You were so good in that.
I'm a huge fan.
No, like Brian Cox is obviously like in his 60s and this guy's like in his 30s.
Yeah, like early 30s.
And he's like. I don't think you're thiss. Yeah, like early 30s. And he's like,
I don't think you're this guy. Yeah, I don't believe you.
And he's like, okay,
just don't steal the tape. I'm not stupid,
but just don't steal the tape. And
goes to the tape. The tape is missing.
And he's like, who's the last person that had it?
And he looks at it and he's like, it was you.
Which, obviously, you know
that it wasn't. Yeah, I thought that scene was
great. that dude is
fantastic he's really funny
like the guy who's like the orderly
who's like helping him around is like should
be a movie star
but
so yeah so it turns out
Brian Cox's character whose name I am blanking
on I'm just I've been
calling him Mr. Morgan Mr. Morgan definitely
has a first name he's richard
i think maybe who cares let's go with that uh sounds right so we find out that he has the
tape of samara yes so then that's when naomi watts goes over to his house and is like looking for
evidence of what's going on here and she finds the tape of samara uh because it's like in a vcr
already also there's a nasty centipede in
the files and it's a jump scare and it really scared me oh yeah and the centipede is also
so she watches the video and it's samara being interviewed by like psychiatrists psychologists
in like a big crazy room which is indicative of
like this the testing uh the electro what did you call it electrodes that we saw earlier that she
yanked out of her mouth when she was so hungry right oh god and uh-huh and um they're so they're
interviewing this little girl samara who you can only see like one of her eyes, like her hair is long.
She looks she's clearly like the girl from earlier.
Yeah.
And they're asking her about like how she feels and like what her life is like.
And she's like clearly like kind of creepy.
But it seems like maybe she has been abused like the way that they're talking to her.
But then they hold up some like some film film photos like negatives essentially and they say how
did you make these because and they're like pictures of horses and stuff but they look like
film negatives they don't look like actual pictures right they're not drawings and she says i just
think of them and they happen something to that effect then brian cox shows up again he's behind
he creeps up behind Naomi Watts
and bonks her over the head with
I don't remember what. Something heavy.
A shovel. Uh oh.
Looks like it hurts. Yeah. Knocks her out.
Grabs the tape out of the VCR.
Storms upstairs.
I feel like he grabs like the whole VCR
and like the TV. He also grabs the TV.
He grabs all of it. This scene is
bananas.
So Naomi Watts like gets up dazed. She chases him up the TV. He also grabs the TV. That's okay. He grabs all of it. This scene is bananas. She, so Naomi Watts like gets up dazed.
She chases him up the stairs.
She sees that there's a big pool of water coming out of his bathroom.
She like turns the corner and he's in there and he's, the tub is overflowing and he has
every TV that has ever been created stacked in a giant pile um and there's
just like cords everywhere like it's the biggest like electrocution hazard that you can imagine
and she's like what are you doing and he tells her essentially like it's never gonna end he says
yeah the fact that you're here means it's never gonna stop yeah she'll never stop yeah never stop. Yeah. And she's like, no, you can't do this.
Like, who are you?
What are you talking about?
And then he just like gets in the tub and then knocks over.
I'm not kidding.
It's like 15 televisions.
So much.
So many electronics in this.
Way overkill.
I don't know how he got them all there.
He also puts on a horse.
I don't know the name of it.
A bridle?
Bridle.
He puts a horse bridle in his mouthle which is a really creepy detail that i
didn't like oh i don't like that metal yeah oh that's awful yeah he puts a horse bridle on jumps
in the tub and electrocutes himself and then naomi watts is freaked out obviously and like runs
outside and she's like scared and doesn't know what to do and then right when she gets outside
she runs into somebody and you're like oh god who is, who is it? And it's Noah. So he's made it back over there.
And now they're going to like try to investigate.
Well, she like remembers what Aiden said.
And she's like, oh, she doesn't like the barn.
The horses keep her up at night.
Yeah.
And so they go in to explore it, to explore the barn.
And there's like her creepy little bedroom in the top of the barn where
she was like exiled to the barn yeah which further makes you think that she was abused right yeah
definitely that does seem to sort of solidify yeah usually kids sleep in the house yeah usually
in my experience yeah um this is a barn kid
um barn kid we don't know yet and she has
she was a horse girl
24-hour horse girl um there's a little tv in there and they notice something behind the wallpaper
and they start peeling the wallpaper and there's like a big burned in tree and i only once goes
i've seen this tree and it's like girl no you haven't what are you talking about he's like yeah
this was like on the on the tape the drawing was on the tape and she's like no i've seen this tree
in real life and it's like what? You recognize one tree?
It's a tree that's made of burn marks.
I don't know that I could tell you a single tree I'd recognize.
Yeah.
It really made me laugh.
I don't think I recognize a single tree.
I've been to that tree.
I know that tree.
That tree was my father.
Oh, my God.
Okay.
So now we're in day seven. Oh, no. That's the last one. We're in day seven. seven of course yes yeah it was seven days was the rule if you remember if you recall
um from way back so the the place she recognizes the tree from is the cabin in which the four kids originally watched the videotape uh-huh
um and is it a very distinct tree that's even crazier that she remembered i thought it was
going to be like from her childhood home or something i don't think it's that distinct
of a tree it's just that it's like the only tree there they also describe it they show a moment
that i guess is meant to make you be like, oh, I guess I could remember
why that would be a special tree, which is at sunset.
It hits the leaves at a certain way and it looks like the tree is on fire.
Right.
So she's like, oh, but the one in the wood one did not depict that.
It's like, oh, OK.
Good guess.
OK.
We'll give you this one yeah she's
great at Pictionary but they
go to the cabin again so they're back
to the original cabin full circle
like a ring and
they're like tearing the
cabin apart trying to figure out like what
what happened here why here why
is this so special this has to be the last
step like what are we missing
and nothing's working and then Noah gets really angry because they can't figure out what's
happening.
And I know tantrum they have like at this point,
like 30 minutes before they're going to die.
Oh yeah.
Or before she's going to die.
Cause she's going to die before him.
Yeah.
A day before him.
And,
uh,
he throws a tantrum and smashes a giant thing of,
I guess,
marbles,
uh,
that they had in this cabin and all of the marbles start
rolling towards the like the television that is sitting like in kind of the center of the floor
yeah and they pool and they're like oh there's a dip here like something's here and they rip the
carpet up and they see that there's a the floor has been boarded up and that something was underneath it
and they yank the boards up
and then they jump down and the well from
the video is there
so I don't remember how
they make this connection but they
realize this must be where the girl from the
video went because they never found
a body for her like
right I think because
Aiden has said like she's in a dark place yeah and in
the in the video you see kind of a pov from the bottom of the well that's what the ring is that's
what the ring is oh okay um okay that's so she's she's like we have to like we have to get her they like they like throw a rock into it
to see how deep it is it's so
you never hear how deep it is
yeah never makes a noise
um the tv static
turns on it seems
like water starts coming out of the tv
they're like looking into the
well the tv falls
uh like into this hole they're
standing in and knocks naomi watts in the back
and it knocks her over the side of the well so she falls headfirst into this well which we can't
see the bottom determined is bottomless yeah so she plummets into water at the bottom of the well
and then as she she stands up like it's really dark she can't really see
she's like feeling around and
then she
reaches out and grabs
a big giant clump of hair
her favorite snake
and she's like I didn't
know this was a restaurant
oh my god
and like Noah has like run to go
get help he's like oh I't know, get a rope or something.
It's very dark down there.
Well, so what happens is Noah leaves and while he's gone, the lid of the well closes on its own.
On its own.
And so it's like pitch black.
And before it closed, she saw a lot of fingernails in the walls of this well.
Actual fingernails.
Not like markings from fingernails. Like ripped off fingernails. Holy walls of this well actual fingernails not like markings from
fingernails like ripped off fingernails holy shit that's not good um and so then yeah the well like
fills with her favorite tasty treat hair and she's like this couldn't have gone better what a perfect day I love this day seven the best
and then um
a hand reaches out and grabs her
and I'm guessing
gives her like a
vision of the past right
and the vision is
of Anna Morgan oh it's
of Samara standing next to
this well the cabin's not
there so this is a while ago someone
built the cabin over it later
she's standing there like kind of looking down
in the well like looking circumspect
or something and
Anna is sneaking up behind her
kind of slowly and then she
puts a bag over
her head and like
holds it to her for a while and then
dumps her over into the well and is like
crying while she does it like she's
crying and says like I didn't want
I never wanted this or something like that
and then throws Anna
into the well and then picks up
I don't know Anna throws Samara
into the well sorry about that
and then like closes
the well over her
which is what the ring actually is as as you see the light around the edge of it as it's closing.
Oh my God.
What the fuck?
So at this point, you're like, oh shit, this mother murdered her daughter.
Yeah.
Right.
And now they found her.
Right.
And Naomi Watts is, it cuts back, Naomi Watts is kind of like there with this body, and it's the body of Samara looking like a human like like herself and she's kind of like crying
like Naomi Watts is like on the verge of tears like oh well she feels also that she was still
alive that the that the that the mom didn't actually successfully kill her so she like
was thrown into the well and survived and And so... Yeah, as long as that might be.
Wait, so then Naomi Watts... Naomi Watts...
To delay the reveal for no reason.
Sorry.
That'll be good.
So, wait, hold on.
Naomi Watts is in the well with Samara alive now.
It looks like she's alive.
It looks like she's alive. It looks like she's alive.
But then as she holds her,
she kind of is like cradling her and then her skin and hair melt.
Oh my God.
And then it,
she turns into just a full skeleton wearing a little girl's gown.
Oh my God.
And around that time,
Noah shows back up and like gets the lid of the well off and like shines a
light down on her and then they get her out.
And police show up.
There's a bunch of EMTs and stuff are there.
There's a whole crime scene going on.
They're like, okay, we found this dead body.
Now we have to...
She can finally be laid to rest in a real place.
Naomi Watts didn't die.
She missed her...
The day seven thing didn't happen to her.
She didn't,
she didn't get killed.
So there,
everybody's kind of like,
Oh great.
It all worked out.
She just needed her murder solved.
Yeah.
Like a classic ghost just wants to rest in peace.
Yes.
But then that's when,
that's when Aiden says,
this is good.
Now we really built up the question,
um,
says,
how long do you think you
could survive down there and she goes seven days you could survive seven days yeah and so the seven
days is because that's how long she had to live in a well before she starved to death i guess oh
my god because she had water she had water oh my She could have been in here. She could have had a hair stack. Oh my god.
That's horrible.
The end.
Or
there's 15 more minutes.
So the idea is that
she was like also supernatural
and could create these videotapes.
And so somehow
she has some psychic ability where she can imprint
images like she did at the psychiatric hospital
like the negatives so she like
created this tape with her mind
I guess yeah and that's
why it has no time code and she was trying
control track and she was trying to get people to find
her by giving them those clues that's
what we're led to believe and it wasn't until
Naomi Watts and the power of investigative
journalism that's right never been seen
by a journalist.
They take Aiden home.
He's sleeping in the back seat, but he wakes up for a second, sees
them holding hands, his
mom and his dad. Are they going to be a happy
family now?
This is exciting. The color palette
changes. It's been very blue and green
and dark the whole time. Now it's the next morning. color palette changes. It's been very blue and green and like dark the whole time.
Now it's like the next morning they wake up.
She's Rachel has slept with in her son's bed and they like wake up and it's like brighter colors.
And she's like feeling good.
Feeling great.
I mean, she was in a well with a corpse.
That did happen.
She solved a big with a corpse. That did happen. Yeah, she solved it. Now things are a little better.
She solved a big, big mystery.
Mm-hmm.
She's going to write about it for her boss.
It's a big, juicy story.
Juicy story.
Yeah.
And then Aiden says, what happened to the little girl?
And she says, we set her free.
Like, she's free now
and Aiden like pops up
and is like you helped her
and he's like you weren't supposed to
do that you weren't supposed to do that
and it actually really gave me
chills I was like oh my god
I really fell for the happy ending
me too I fell for
it too so then it
cuts over to Noah's place.
Yeah.
Oh no.
Because now it's been seven days for him.
Yeah.
And he's like kind of doing some work at his place and his TV pops on.
Oh God.
And like the full effect of this scene now still worked on me.
I was going to say this is like the most famous scene.
And I like completely forgot that it happened.
And I was like, oh, happy ending.
Great.
Nobody died.
Yeah.
But so the TV pops on.
And he's kind of staring at it.
He's confused because he feels like they already solved it.
Right.
And then the TV is static, static, static.
And then it stops on the
picture of the well that the video originally ended on and he's kind of staring at it and then
a hand pops up on the well like a little girl's hand oh god and then like samara starts to emerge
from the well oh god then it's cutting back and forth throughout this whole scene to naomi watts like calling him the phone is ringing in the background freaking out she's like freaking
out calling him she's like something's off and he's not answering the phone because the scariest
thing in the world is happening to him and uh so he's he's watching the video and samara kind of
crawls up out of the well and she's back into like
full like hair where you can't
see her face she like
shambles towards or ambles towards
the screen in this really creepy walk that's
like she like leads
she like leads with one
foot in this weird way she's like kind of limping
and he's just kind of
staring at it like what the hell is this
and as she gets closer and closer at it like what the hell is this?
And as she gets closer and closer to it, he like backs away in fear.
And then she leans forward and just like puts one hand out of the TV.
Oh my God.
And then puts another hand out of the TV.
Oh God.
And as she's crawling out, like water comes with her.
So like she's soaking wet. And so as she comes to the tv the water is spreading all
over the room and she kind of stand like she crawls out and she stands up and he's like 15
feet away from her so and then all of a sudden she just is in front of him she like glitches
like a tv yeah and then she still looks like a tv yeah like a tv image oh my god and so then she
like pops towards him and he's sitting there like
freaking out doesn't know what to do like falls down on a chair uh naomi watts is almost there
like she's like running into his building there's like a part where he knocks over a bookcase and
there's like shattered glass everywhere and he's like crawling over the shattered glass which i
really don't like i hate that yeah yeah and then like he just kind of looks up and he looks terrified.
And then it cuts to Naomi Watts like running into his building, running up the stairs.
And then she runs in.
And before it shows anything, she just like screams in terror, kind of the same way Becca did at the very beginning of the movie.
Then that's kind of it for that scene.
You don't see him till later.
I could have sworn that you did.
Like I had a memory of his face. But it does show him eventually. Oh, it does? then. You don't see him till later. I could have sworn that you did. Like I had a memory
of his face. But it does show him eventually. Oh it does?
Yeah. It doesn't show him there.
Because I thought the same thing. I was like oh he looks like
Amber Tamlin looked.
Right. And he does. But they don't show it
there. Right. They show it later when
she's recounting this
to someone and
it flashes on Katie's
face and then it flashes on noah's face and noah
looks like equally as like messed up okay and like green and broken so okay so they both just
got like scared to death yeah seemingly oh god like it was just like i read somewhere that maybe
maybe the book has because it's based on the book and um that the consensus is that she like projects all the
images into your mind at once and like overloads your brain with horrific imagery so that you like
short circuit basically and your heart stops and your like head melts from the inside oh okay wow
hey okay described to me not a great way to go yeah um. So she's, yeah, freaking out, right? She comes home.
She's like, why didn't it take me?
She's like, what, like, what do you want?
What did I do that he didn't do?
Like, we all did.
We did the same.
We went on our journey together.
I buried your ass.
Did she see Samara when she went in the apartment?
No.
Or did she just see him?
She was gone.
And there was water everywhere.
Okay. Okay. Got it. she see samara when she went in the apartment or did she just see him she was gone and there was water everywhere but okay okay got it um and so she's like on the floor like crying and like freaking out and she sees the copied tape on the floor oh and she realizes she the only thing she
did different is she made a copy and she made somebody else watch it yeah so now she looks at
aiden and she realizes like if i want to save my son who she's definitely going to kill next
i have to get him to copy the tape and get someone else to watch it yeah so the last scene of the
movie is they're sitting in one of those copy bays from earlier and she has, she like shows him how to do it so that he's physically doing it himself and
they copy the tape.
And then that's kind of it.
Like,
you're just like,
they're going to,
you know,
they're going to show it to someone.
Right.
I think he says,
what's going to happen to the person that we show this to.
And it just like ends on her face being like,
I don't know.
I mean,
they're going to die,
but that's our only option.
Wow. That's how it ends. Yeah., but that's our only option. Wow.
That's how it ends.
That's how it ends.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's a great ending.
It is a really good ending. It's a good ending.
And I think it's one of the reasons that it made me that it like hung with me as a scary
movie for so long is because I was like, oh, there's no resolution.
Right.
It keeps going.
And that was another.
The like the original title, The Ring for the book.
The author said The Ring is like about the cyclical nature of this curse.
Pretty cool.
Wow.
So she was evil probably when she was born and they figured out a way to try to stop her.
They were trying to like psychologically figure out what her deal was
I think when I saw the movie
the first time I was like
a hundred percent on the girl's
side like I remember when I watched it
in way back in 02
I was
like oh yeah this girl's like they've got
to save her like because I guess that's also like a
story horror ghost story trope
is like you have to like put them to rest and I was like oh man like they did something to this girl they
mistreated her and like she was like yeah she had this power but like she was only using it for bad
because like they made her right they like hurt her right and then that's not it at all she's just
naturally evil yeah it does seem like they had this kid like yeah and maybe the mom went crazy
because she had all desperately wanted a daughter.
Yeah.
And then she has this daughter that's like pure evil and is so tortured by the fact that
she can't let her daughter live, but also wanted a daughter so badly and like goes insane
and then kills her.
Yeah.
Fucking Christ.
That's a worst case scenario.
Yeah.
All of this is pretty much worst case scenario
nobody has a good time in this movie
no so they were that dude in that
scene where he's like I know you're not the
dad
yeah so they put her in the
bar they all the abuse quote unquote wasn't
necessarily abuse it was like they were protecting
themselves from her yes probably
okay got it
wow um
yeah I don't know what you do about that
is she a demon or is she just like
you know what is she I think
it might be based on yeah like a
um a specific actually
like a Japanese demon
there's a it's called a
on unreal a Japanese
ghost that manifests after dying in the grip of
rage and returns to seek vengeance yes it's what uh it's what the grudge ghost is as well yes
okay the ring being the well uh looking up from the bottom of the well was really interesting i
wasn't expecting that that was a good i like that we never addressed by aidan like understand samara we didn't no
it's kind of like uh stephen king style just glosses over it like it's just a thing that
someone can do he's got a shining he's got the shining maybe yeah kids are i really think yeah
the scariest i mean i'm probably not the scariest if i saw it but in hearing about it felt like him
popping up and being like you helped her is like that dread is
huge it got me good also
why didn't he fucking say something if he
knew that much context there are a few
times in this movie watching it on
for the second it's only the second time I've ever
seen it but like I knew where it was going
and there are several times where I was watching it was like
say something like there's a there's a few
times I think on a second watch where it doesn't
quite hold up as well as a first watch yeah because it works as a mystery that you are unwrapping
right once you know the mystery you're kind of like oh that doesn't make sense
why does it show like one of my questions like why does naomi watts see like everything that
happens to her or everything that she sees in the video happens right so like she finds anna
morgan she sees the mirror the literal mirror from the video.
The horse falls off the thing and then you see the blood in the water.
There's a centipede.
It's like that can't be happening to everyone who's on this tape.
Yeah.
So I was kind of like, oh, I don't understand the logic of the tape.
Like, does it show you?
That's why one of you asked if it was different for everybody.
And I kind of don't know because of that reason.
Could be tailored to each person's life.
Yeah. Like she knows that you're going're gonna see I think it's made to order
I think it's a made to order tape I have a feeling
you're gonna see a ladder and a centipede
it's
also funny because it's like a lot of it is
in the beginning is based on like hard
analysis of a physical film
right right and all of that it's like
oh it's a magic ghost tape like
she like left stuff in
the margins like what what editing software did she use yeah oh my god aaron thank you so much
this was thank you for doing this honestly like i really enjoyed hearing about this movie this is
one of my most anticipated yeah yeah so i'm really glad to know it now i was very glad to re-watch it
i yeah that just reminded me of something else that I think scared me a lot
when I was a kid.
Sorry, I know we're wrapping up,
but the movie ends
with the camera
looking at the video.
So the last thing you see
when you're watching the movie
is the video.
The thing that kills everyone.
Yes.
So you have to,
you watched the video.
So now you watched the video.
Right.
And then I was like,
I think for seven days
is literally how long i was
scared as a kid because i was like oh in seven days i'm dead yeah seven days i was like okay
i guess i'm fine there's also like no one else has died yet yeah i've seen like millions of
people saw this opening night and so you would have been one of the first that's true. That'd be crazy. Central. Okay, so you were okay.
You had at least an hour.
Yeah, I was keeping an eye on New York.
Just consider your fate, yeah.
Calling your New York friends.
Yeah.
You still alive?
Apparently there was also a feature on the DVD
where like a hidden Easter egg or whatever you call,
where if you like clicked a
certain thing it would play the tape in its entirety and like freeze your tv so you could
do nothing to like stop it what and then afterwards it would go back to the main screen freeze still
like you still couldn't use the remote and then it would play a phone ringing that's fucked up isn't that scary I hate that I hate that I hate that I hate that
that's the scariest part of all
of this I
hate that that's a horrible DVD
trick see that's
that's why I can't do scary movies
that shit right there
like I would feel
such real terror
were I to experience that.
And like I don't ever.
No, you don't need it.
Feel that way.
You don't need it.
You don't need it.
Oh, yeah.
That's bad.
So much anxiety for even imagining that set of circumstances.
Emily's about to fall out of her chair.
Luckily, we don't use DVDs anymore.
So that's why we got rid of DVDs.
That's why.
This is why. Mm hmm. I love my smart TV. No, I don't use DVDs anymore so that's why we got rid of DVDs this is why I love my smart TV no I don't
no see now I'm scared
it's too smart
these TVs are too smart
they don't do much
should we go out
with you and the little voice of the little boy
yeah we'll just all say goodbye together
and I forgot his name. Aiden's voice.
Here we go.
Aiden.
Aiden.
Goodbye.
Hi guys.
Sammy here. Thank you so much
for listening to another episode of
Too Scary Didn't Watch.
We really had a great time with Aaron
hearing all about The Ring.
And if you liked the episode,

to subscribe, rate, review us.
We'd really appreciate it.
It helps other people find us.
And don't forget to follow us on social media.
Next week's film was chosen by a poll
that we did on Instagram.
So if you want to be able to vote on movies that we do and other cool stuff like that,

We are on Instagram and Twitter.
Okay, that's all.
See you next week.
Love you.
