This is Emily, Henley, and Sammy, and you're listening to Too Scary, Didn't Watch.
Hi, everyone. Welcome to Too Scary, Didn't Watch, the horror movie recap podcast for
those too scared to watch for themselves. I'm Emily. And that's me. I'm
too scared to watch scary movies. There she is. I'm Henley. I'm also too scared to watch
scary movies. I'm Sammy. I like watching scary movies and I like telling my friends about
them. She's a freak. I'm a freak. I'm a real freak. That's become a new addition to our
every week intro. I'm sort of just putting Sammy down. Putting Sammy down every time.
Our friend is bad. Just because I'm so jealous. She's so brave. I know just putting Sammy down. Putting Sammy down every time. Our friend is bad.
Just because I'm so jealous.
She's so brave. I know you really are.
You're like it's turning into a resentment.
Turn Sammy.
This podcast is going to end the friendship.
It's not really though. It's just
making our friendship so much stronger. Thank you Henley.
It is. Thank you. I was
worried. Do you think scary happened to us
this week? kind of i guess
all right so i have one um it's not that scary but i watched the movie i lost my body the animated
film on netflix and it's um i don't know why but before i watched i thought it was going to be some
like whimsical child well because it's animated which makes it feel like it has to. I don't know.
I have some element of that, but that's not true.
It's not that it's scary.
It's more that it's way darker than I was expecting and really, really sad and really beautiful.
Like, I highly recommend the movie.
But dang, like 20 minutes in, I was like, can I do this right now?
I'm so sad.
Oh, no.
I'm so sad.
And I was just like kind of crying for an hour and a half last night.
I'm going to watch it.
You know I love to cry.
I was literally said to Tim, I was like, Sammy's going to love this movie.
Yeah.
Sign me up.
Crying.
Crying, I'm there.
And I certainly won't ever watch it.
Yeah.
And I won't watch it.
I don't think Emily will watch it because it involves loss of limbs and too much sadness.
I can't do it.
But everything needs to stay attached for me to be able to watch it.
Oh, that's my thing.
Man.
What about you guys?
Well, I started watching the Taylor Swift documentary.
Equally as scary and as important.
So I just threw it on the other day.
I was like, I need to put something on in the background.
And then I found myself getting very invested. Oh yeah?
And I guess I just
it's just making me wonder
why. Why I'm
invested and
how do I feel about it?
I watched it too. It's good. It's
good. I haven't seen it yet.
Well it you know because I don't have
any real strong feelings about her or didn't
going into it.
And I guess because i don't have any real strong feelings about her or didn't going into it um and i guess i still don't but i don't know jenna's my point is jenna's takeaway was that her cats are incredibly cute she has some and also honestly they look really expensive those
are like some um pricey like bougie rich person cat she's way more self-aware than i was expecting more self-aware
direct she was really talking a lot about how she built her entire belief system on just getting
other people to like her so many times she's like i just wanted other people to like me that's the
only thing i wanted to be good and i wanted other people to like me and it's like that's real we all could tell and also I really I was
I was watching that was like oh
I've done that
because everyone's guilty of that to a certain
degree yeah
so did I say anything
of value about my experience watching that
movie I don't know I just sort of said that I watched
it yes and we cut that whole thing out
what was I saying my scary thing was that I broke my know I just sort of said that I watched it yes and we cut that whole thing out what was I saying
um my scary
thing was that I broke my or I'm about to break
my personal record of most scary movies watched in
one week I'm gonna be watching my
fourth later today because we've crammed in a few
episodes because Henley's going out of town
so this week I will be
I will have watched four horror films
in a week that is a lot for me
four movies in a week is a lot. It is.
Oh, and then the other scary
thing was that I watched
Us at 7.30 this morning
and at 8 a.m.
a loud bang on the door really
frightened me. Oh my gosh, but also like what if
you hadn't been watching a movie?
That's very early for a bang on the door.
It was an Amazon delivery.
Oh, hell yeah. I knew it. but it was a really poorly timed delivery.
Really poorly for me personally.
Did you scream at him?
Yeah, I opened the door and I said, fuck you.
What the fuck are you thinking?
What is your fucking problem?
Leave my package to get the hell off my stoop.
Can you not tell that I'm watching a horror film now at 8 a.m.?
And you should be respectful and thoughtful.
Good. Wow. Which, sorry be respectful and thoughtful. Good.
Wow.
Which, sorry, did you have more to say about that?
No, I was just going to say, which leads us to what movie were you watching?
That's what I was going to say.
Okay, so this week's movie is Us, came out 2019, written and directed by Jordan Peele,
starring Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan
Alex, Elizabeth Moss,
Tim Heidecker.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Great. That is it.
Well, I have some more to say,
which is that this week
joining us to
tell us about this film, we have two guests
here to tell us about this movie.
We have Greg Gallant, a TV
writer and improviser, and we have
Prati Gupta, a TV writer.
And just lovely people.
And welcome, guys. Hey, thanks for having
us. Yay! Did anything scary happen
to you guys this week? Last night,
we were playing Pictionary with
friends, and
Greg and I were on the same team,
and the first couple people on our
team went up and like
you know we got like four or five
or something like that and then
Greg went up and
he what he started drawing
was so
incredibly confusing
um
but I drew it five times
the same thing
that's the trick about pictionary if you just
keep drawing the same thing over and over again it got it somehow got worse each time that he
drew what did it look like yeah it looked like an angel people kept guessing angel one person
guessed angel over and over again never explored the
idea of anything else with wings was never explored it was it looked honestly like um
a baseball mitt was sort of mid melt um and also a catching catching a ball,
but, you know, the ball was not necessarily...
So your classic melting baseball man situation.
We were playing the Salvador Dali edition of Pictionary.
So we were all guessing that,
because, you know, in Pictionary,
you typically guess what you see.
You do, yeah.
It was butterfly.
Butterfly, Greg?
Butterfly. Butterfly should seem like pretty easy to draw like pretty easy yeah well but then i kind of went like you fucking draw a butterfly and she did it
in about half a second because the wings curl in in the middle like an m i never thought about that
there's a body and also there's a body and there are two there are also two wings it was one like the wings were connecting at the
bottom and kind of a hard look i'm not good at drawing i'm a good guesser though to be fair on
the record and i don't i don't want to like you know gender this or whatever but i feel like as
like a small girl i was drawing butterflies like fucking all the time you haven't even done the
step to explain why this was scary you haven't even done the step to explain why this was scary. You haven't even done
the little mental gymnastics to forgive
bringing this up on the podcast.
That's how it always works. It's scary that
you're dating a human being who can't
draw a butterfly. Is that what it is?
Oh, I just think the drawing itself was
kind of scary. Fair. It's available
on Twitter.com, y'all. She took
a photo of it and it's been tweeted.
Twitter.com, check it out took a photo of it and it's been tweeted twitter.com check it out
open up your browser type in www.twitter.com http slash slash uh great great greg was that
your is this moment now your scary thing no i've i've already been roundly shamed. I feel like I've become used to it.
Mine was that last night after we got home, we picked up our dog from daycare.
I took him on a walk and then we were hanging out with him on the couch and his breath smelled like butterscotch or like something sweet.
So I got into my head like, what did he eat something on his walk?
He didn't eat like chocolate or anything, did he? And then I did the smart thing to do when you're a little paranoid which was i
got high and you webmd'd it yeah we finished us she went to bed webmd.com yeah no no she went to
bed and then like i was high his breath smelled like sweet sugary things and then he was so
alarmingly tired because he'd been playing with other dogs all day
that i was like he's not okay and i started googling like what happens when a dog eats
chocolate and i got on the dog chocolate calculator where you put in how many pounds
and i went on a whole thing and then i was like i gotta make him go up to bed just to prove that
he can walk right now and then like he i dragged him up to his crate and then i like had
a moment where i lied in bed and i was like if i wake up and he's dead oh my god i have to stop
smoking weed that'll be the thing that'll be what i blame at the very least at the very least
hi everybody it is cocktail hour and this week's cocktail is a killer in red.
To make this drink, you'll need three quarters an ounce of Italian red bitter liqueur.
We recommend Campari.
Three quarters an ounce of gin.
Three quarters an ounce of sweet vermouth.
And a half an ounce of Grand Marnier.
You will stir all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish
with just a drop of rose essential oil. Cheers. Wait, so how do you guys feel about scary movies?
Do you like them? I'm really afraid of them. The only scary movie that I've ever watched in the
theater was Get Out. Did it really scare you? It it scared me.
Well, here's how I combated that was I read the entire Wikipedia page for it first. I mean,
been there, done that a million times. And then I went to the theater and so I like knew
what was going to happen. So I wasn't that scared. But I mean i was always really um i was always like a really
scared person um and when i was little i watched um i watched something that scared me so much
that i slept in my parents bed for a month the thing that i watched just the beginning of Twister. Oh, Twister scared the shit out of me
when I was a kid.
Oh my God.
It's really scary.
I was convinced I was going to die
because of a tornado.
Yes.
100% convinced,
even though I lived in Maryland
where there's like never been a tornado
in the history of the world.
But my mom had to be like,
let's look at like the Farmer's Almanac
to prove to you that this is not going to happen.
Oh my God, I wish we could have met when we were children.
We needed a Twister support group.
Yeah, you really did.
Beginning of Twister support group.
Yeah.
I hadn't seen horror movies in theaters for years,
and then in the last few years,
I've started to see more.
I saw Get Out, Arclight Hollywood opening night, which was fucking awesome.
Oh, I bet.
That was so fun.
Great movie to see with a crowd.
Amazing.
I randomly saw the last Halloween, the Danny McBride Halloween in theaters, which was very
funny because at one point, there's something that i won't spoil it but there's
something that happens where michael myers who's the boogeyman of these movies like goes to do
something that i guess crossed the bridge even for him or like they tease that he's gonna do
something and this woman just like normal volume not yelling not whispering just kind of goes like
oh michael no and then later in the same screening it just
kind of a quiet part like someone on one part of this theater sneezed and someone on the other
side of the theater just went god bless you again very normal vlog so that's i saw midsummer in
theaters but we didn't see us in theaters.
No.
The scariest movie I really saw, I like my sister and I were like sleeping over at my
cousin's house one time.
We watched the Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp and that freaked me out.
But the most scared I ever got by a movie, similarly not a horror movie, The Truman Show.
That's psychological.
The Truman Show fucked me up.
There's an actual diagnosis now.
I think it's called the Truman,
it's like the Truman Effect
or something like that
where people get convinced
that they are in the Truman Show.
I believe it.
Like it's happening to them.
And then anytime
any little coincidence
or one of your friends like,
have you tried Sprite Zero?
It's like,
what the fuck's going on?
Yeah, that's a scary one. That's a real life real life like very scary got me good um i just want to say that also something
about this movie us is that this is one of the reasons why this podcast exists actually really
because this is one of the first movies that i was really curious about but really didn't want
to actually have to see it's very intriguing trailer I want to know all the details so I
at Sammy went to go see it like opening night
and immediately afterwards I was like
Sammy tell me fucking
everything want to know all the details
don't spare
one little thing and she walked
me through the whole movie so I feel like I've almost seen
this movie
I have wanted to know about this movie,
but I haven't heard a thing.
This is like,
I somehow was able to never hear anything,
but I similarly,
I'm like,
Ooh,
cause I saw,
I did see get out and it did really scare me.
That's like as bad as much as I can handle.
I don't know.
I'm tension wise.
I feel like you have,
I'm getting there.
It was a couple of years ago. So maybe I'm getting there. You're getting there.
It was a couple years ago
so maybe I'm getting better.
You recently watched
a lot of scary movies.
Emily's kind of changing.
There's been true character
development on this podcast.
True character development.
Yeah.
Do we have any interesting
facts about this movie?
Trivia?
Anybody?
First of all
Lupita Nyong'o in this movie
robbed an Academy Award.
Robbed.
Yeah.
In my opinion.
Truly?
Was so scary.
Not even nominated, right?
Not even nominated.
A true travesty.
Was so scary that I had to look up
just like interviews of her.
Like clips of her normal.
Yeah.
Just to like humanize the actor.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She's so good in it.
That's interesting.
I love that.
And then the other one
that's kind of interesting
is Jordan Peele made the whole cast
watch 11 horror films
so that they would have
a shared language
when filming, which were
Jaws, Dead Again, The Shining,
The Babadook, It Follows,
A Tale of Two Sisters,
The Birds, Funny Games, Martyrs,
Let the Right One In, and The Sixth Sense.
Some of those I haven't even heard of.
That's a good list.
Let the Right One.
I definitely had a thought watching it
of like how it must have been tough to
get all the so essentially everyone in the cast has to play themselves and then the shadow tether
version of themselves and i was like they definitely had to work to get on the same
page about what their interpretation of the physicality of this like right there's a scene
where like tim heidecker of all people has
to do a lot of like physical stuff as the shadow version and i was like that really does link up
with like the way winston duke and lupita are playing it i was like that must have been as a
director like really like i think lupita got robbed and i also think they should give out
awards for stand-ins and these people from this movie should get it because they're so stand-in heavy.
They definitely should do a category
for stand-in. For movies where
doubling... Is said
so prominent. It really...
The
writer who wishes he knew how
to direct in me was watching
this movie going like, God damn, this looks
great. Yeah, that's cool.
I'm very excited are we watching
the trailer i think are we gonna watch the trailer you know what happens so you can handle it i want
to watch the trailer let's watch it they look exactly like us they think like us
we need to move and keep moving
they won't stop until they kill us
so we kill them
be careful
be careful
okay I feel like people have said that this movie is like not a true
horror like it's like this that looks fucking so scary like scissors and like
to set the scene for the listener y'all watch the trailer i watched emily watched the trailer as the only person who was super
unfamiliar with this movie it was delightful i was really scared she screamed three times
oh god oh my god i'm so excited what is in this movie um well should we get into it let's get
into it yeah if you're a new parent a bad day means you either ran out of coffee diapers

I used to love back-to-school shopping so much that I would tell my mom that
I wanted to work at Staples when I grew up because I just loved getting all the things that I needed
that I would use every day in class. I still to this day have nightmares about showing up in class
without notebooks or number two pencils. Really scary stuff. But luckily I wake up and I realize I
don't actually need notebooks or number two pencils anymore. But this fall there is something
that I will be using every day and would be terrified to be caught without. And that's
Raycon's best-selling everyday earbuds. I've been trying to go on walks
every day and so I need earbuds that I can rely on to listen to all my favorite podcasts. And I know
you guys listen to podcasts as well, so you know what I'm talking about. I got my Raycons in carbon
black because that's my vibe, but they come in other cool colors as well, like forest
green and brush violet. But my favorite thing about them is the battery life. They stay charged
for 32 hours and they have a new quick charge function. So 10 minutes of charging gets you 90 minutes of battery life.
Really freaking convenient for, I don't know, say a long morning walk.
You forgot to charge them and you just need a little bit of juice to listen to one episode of a podcast.
It's only going to take you 10 minutes.
It's incredible.
It's only going to take you 10 minutes.
It's incredible.
So go to buyraycon.com slash too scary today to get 20 to 40% off site-wide.
That's right. You'll get up to 40% off everything on Raycon's website when you go to buyraycon.com slash too scary.
Buyraycon.com slash too scary by raycon dot com slash too scary so we start off uh with young lupita
nyong'o uh and her parents at the carnival on this boardwalk and she wanders off from her parents
stumbles into this creepy ass hall of mirrors and then runs into herself in a mirror but not moving in concert with her which you saw
in the trailer the little girls and that freaks her out and then you cut to her parents having
her in like therapy and she stopped talking she stopped talking essentially and they're like what
we don't know what to do and the mom's pissed at the dad for letting her get away and stuff. And that's sort of like the prologue?
Yeah, that's the cold open if you will.
And then another thing that happens in that little prologue is that
before they go to the fair, she's watching
TV and it's a Hands Across America
commercial. Oh, right.
Right, right, right, right.
That's sort of a runner throughout.
What is Hands Across America?
Thank you. It's a thing in the 80s.
I mean, I don't really know. This is 86 but it was like a fundraiser like a what is it it was a sort
of we are the world he's sort of like feel good was it like a to raise money or just like a to
raise awareness to make us feel less bad about being america under reagan and shitting all over
the entire world we had to do a lot of charity things like that. We all held
hands. What if we were actually good?
Great, great, great. So, Hands Across
America, you've got this out if it doesn't matter, but
was a public event on Sunday, May
25th, 1986, in which
approximately 6.5 million
people held hands for
15 minutes in an
attempt to form a continuous
human chain across the contiguous United States.
That sounds right.
Terrifying.
That is terrifying.
Honestly, very scary.
Let's all hold hands for 15 minutes and we will all be holding hands across the whole country.
That's absolutely what like the villain in a horror movie comes up with for an idea of like, is what good people do like to kind of
get other people off their scent. Nothing's wrong
because we're holding hands.
Well I think that Jordan Peele definitely
recognized the creepiness of that
and utilized it in this movie. I wonder if it was a thing
that he recognized as a kid.
I bet it is. In 86 being like the fuck
is this? Like stuck with him.
He was like I'm going to put that in a movie one day.
I will be a director and I'll put that in my movie one day oh that's a classic
jordan peele quote oh yeah jordan peele's a child he's always saying it uh and then i think we cut
to present day great lupita and family are headed to the beach to like their well it's like a board
walk in santa cruz oh it's in santa cruz and so uh they're listening well, it's like a boardwalk. Like Cassie in Santa Cruz. Oh, it's in Santa Cruz.
And so they're listening to I Got Five on it, which features prominently throughout
the film and trailer.
Like in different, multiple times.
And then there's like a creepy string version of it at one point.
Which was some trivia created for the trailer by the trailer company.
And then Jordan Peele liked it so much that he put it in a later important scene that he had music to, like a different song to.
And then he was like, I got to use this.
Oh, cool.
Man, that trailer company probably feels so good.
What an ego boost.
Like every editor's dream, too, of when they put a temp thing in and the director's like, we're keeping it.
Yeah, seriously.
You're amazing and I'm going to kiss you
um um um um um
they go to the
house first and yeah like
get settled and we like learn
that the daughter is a runner
have some conversation
like around the table and
the dad's like you don't need
your license like you're a runner you'll just run places and table and the dad's like you don't need a your license like you're a runner you're
you'll just run places and um and the son finds like a magic trick that he had at the house that's
like a lighter that's not really working um and is he like wearing a mask he wears like a chewbacca
mask like oh like on the over his head right okay um they're setting
up all the characteristics of these characters that would be amplified in their yeah okay and
um lupita is just um like real antsy about going to the beach seems like she had a bad time there
at a point yeah real real trigger for her they also make it like she's a very quiet person like that whole like her stop
she stopped speaking back then like features in her character a lot and i think like at this
moment we get another little flashback to them at the um psychiatrists when she was younger and
them just being like she has ptsd like just you know encourage her to dance and things like that.
And yeah, so we just get that.
The mom's name is Adelaide, by the way.
Yes.
I'll probably call her Lupita a lot, though.
It's going to be hard.
It's going to be tough.
That's just fine.
Having it on subtitles for part of it really was interesting because you got to see what the subtitles considered the names of all that.
Like they just called her shadow Red.
Yeah, Red is her tether's name. titles considered the names of all like they just called her shadow red because yeah red is red is
um the yeah her tether's name
um and then they go to the beach
they go to the beach they meet tim
heidecker and elizabeth moss well
they're already friends with them
and then that's where winston meet
up with them yeah winston duke
is like wanting to impress
them because they're all like kind of they're
all kind of bougie people
and that's like they're like beach house impress them because they're all like kind of they're all kind of bougie people and it's not like they're like beach house
friends neighbors yeah
nicer beach has a nicer boat
Winston Duke gets a boat very important yeah
shitty boat and now the family
is bemused
okay and then
on the beach
Elizabeth Moss is like talking to
I'm just gonna call them by their actor sorry
it's just fine um is talking to lupita and a like frisbee flies onto a towel a polka dotted towel
and lands like exactly in the polka dot so it's like perfectly positioned and um elizabeth moss
is like oh that's weird like a lot of coincidences have been happening happening lately and then the sun like wanders off to use the bathroom and lupita doesn't notice and he sees
um like a homeless man standing like in a scarecrow position with like blood dripping
off his fingers but was it supposed to be the same homeless man that she saw on the boardwalk
as a kid that had the 11 11 there's
a there's a man in the opening scene with a jeremiah 11 11 like sign and yes they they on
the way to the beach drive past him in it getting loaded into an ambulance looking dead still holding
the same like jeremiah 11 11 sign now he's on the beach and is bloody
yeah so the kid
wanders away lupita chases it down she
freaks out and they pack the kids up
and head home yeah they go
back am i missing anything they like
they have two twin daughters that
are like real bitchy oh yeah
the white family
the white family
that'll be easier let's just go yeah the white i don't see
any problems here let's do that um yeah then they go home and she has a talk with jason where she's
like i'm sorry you really scared me i didn't know if you were lost and then she she has a like a
staring out the window freak out where she's like i don't want to go to the beach tomorrow or to the
boardwalk yeah and duke's like what the fuck and she tells him yeah what happened when she was
um and this is the first he's hearing about it and she's really panicked and she's like i don't
feel like myself like ever since we've been here like i feel like a dark cloud over me
and like i've had this feeling ever since this happened since she saw the girl and he's like she was in a mirror and she's like she
was right right yeah she wasn't a reflection and she says she's feel she feels like she's always
been coming for her how does he does he is he like my wife is crazy or does he sort of believe her
a little bit of both like he's he tells her that he believes her. He's like, I believe you. That's good. Yeah, it's really nice of him.
I like that.
He's sweet.
He's a good husband.
He fits that archetype now of supportive husband.
Like, what's the dude's name in Frozen?
He's like the female heroine has kind of a lame, dopey, but ultimately supportive and good husband.
The thing he says to comfort her yeah is i
love this he says well i could beat your ass or like i could take you i could beat the shit out
of you so if she's looks just like you like i could take her i honestly love that she's not
amused and he's like sorry yikes okay and then at this point um the son whose name is jason comes in and says
well power goes out oh right right oh you never want that and they don't have a backup generator
like tim heidecker does and that's why he's pissed and then jason says there's a family in
our driveway no no i knew that's what it was gonna be but i don't like it all right it's probably
just the neighbors what y'all scared of a family right and they're just they're just standing
looking real creepy holding holding hands wearing matching outfits kind of hands across america
yeah a little bit um wearing outfits not dissimilar to sammy's right i dressed for the occasion
i couldn't help myself um lupita is like instantly freaked out like the dad is gabe and gabe is like
it's just the name like probably neighbors like he's not too stressed and she immediately calls
the police she's like this is like i'm dialing 9 911. There's a family here. No, they haven't done anything yet.
You're how far away? Like that's too
far. Like she's immediately freaked. Yeah, it's
17 minutes away that they tell her.
That's far.
I know. That feels too far.
That's definitely too far. Yeah.
Winston Duke's like, I'll go. Jesus
don't call 911. I'll go talk to
them. He goes out once and is like
hey, how's it going? And like they don't say anything and he's like, okay, it talk to them he goes out once and is like hey how's it going and like
they don't say anything and he's like okay it's weird he goes back in gets a baseball bat and
goes out again and kind of tries to like tough it up this time he's like if you guys want to get
crazy we'll get crazy which i also think very funny yeah yeah meanwhile lupita's in there
freaking out that's the line from the trailer where she's like get your shoes oh yeah then the
lupita version of the other ones that they're called they're called tethers does the little
and then they all run scatter terrifying big winston duke's tether starts slowly walking
towards him and that scares him back into the house so they all walk in and then like i think
they're like they're like
worried that they're gonna break down the door and instead winston duke's tether just picks up
the hide a key pulls out a key and i think winston duke goes like a hide a key what kind of
fucking white shit is this something like that fucking great while he's opening the door winston
duke has his baseball bat and tries to hit him and then the
the tether winston duke grabs it and hits his leg with it right yes and so he's like immediately
injured and falls over not great not a great start and they kind of surround them and rally them into
the the living space yeah it's that sort of like lupita's tether comes in and has like the scissors right and it's that
sort of thing where they're not outwardly threatening it reminded me of like have you
ever seen the movie badlands with martin uh martin sheen and it was like terrence malick's first
movie it's like martin sheen is like this crazy criminal on a rampage but he never threatens
anyone he's always just being very polite and holding a gun and everyone just it's like a masterful performance right and it reminded me of that they just kind of like slowly
walk them down to sitting in the living room very creepy um and winston duke is like we don't have
any money here like but i can i can find money like what do you want and do they recognize this
point that they look like them um lupita is very much like, shut up, Gabe.
This is obviously not that kind of situation.
They're not here for money.
They look exactly like us.
Okay, great.
Yeah, it's Jason that says it.
Right.
Yeah, his tether is wearing like a creepy sort of,
I can't think what movie mask.
It's just like a cloth mask.
Like a perlap sack.
Yeah, very creepy.
And then he says the big line of like they're us
but i think it's very good of like he doesn't he i feel like jordan peele got him to like really
throw it away of like they're us instead of like they're us looking right into camera very nicely
like thrown away subtle version of that,
which I appreciate.
For your consideration.
And then Lupita, Tether Lupita Red,
gives just the Oscar-worthy monologue.
Begins to speak.
Begins to speak.
The moment she starts talking is terrifying.
It is so her voice.
I have a little impression please please please
please what there was a girl she like is speaking like her windpipe is like broken and this girl
had to eat rabbit yeah she's like and the girl had a, yes. When the little girl ate hot meals, the shadow had to eat rabbit raw and bloody.
And like, I've done this voice a lot too brothy later that night.
As we were trying to go to bed.
Oh, no.
Isn't it so nice I'm still with him?
It's really nice.
It's really nice for him.
Did you get dog's food oh it's so scary oh my god it's really scary and she basically like runs through
so like this little girl has a shadow and when the girl ate nice food she had to eat raw rabbit
when the girl got christmas presents she got sharp objects
that cut her fingers when she played with them when she got married uh red had to partner up
with abraham is is gabe's tether's name his tether is essentially frankenstein yeah like just like a
just grunts yeah yeah and is big and strong um not a good conversationalist not a great
conversationalist when she has i love that kind of partner no when she has her kids
red has kids that are nightmares like the little boy is obsessed with fire and she says that
because the second kid um she had a c-section and she's like and i like she implying that she had to like rip hers
out herself of her stomach which i didn't catch the first time i saw it and i really really upset
me this time the shadow had to do it all herself uh-huh um which is a very very upsetting very you two guys are dying their faces are really frozen and we've barely begun
i don't have a microphone this time and so i'm just gonna be providing uh facial expressions
for everyone in the room to experience oh my god well i i feel like another oh god oh i was just
gonna say her voice is so scary that every time she had a monologue, though, that I was really scary for me.
That's when I was like, like mentally like, OK, right after this, we're going to watch some 30 Rock.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You got to palate cleanser.
Pluck 30 Rock available.
None of us are affiliated, but really good show.
Great show. Great show. Great show.
none of us are affiliated but really good show great show great show great show i think at this point lupita says one of her other hugely scary lines when she pulls out handcuffs right and hands
them to or like red hands them to addie and says tether yourself to the table and she said she
says or i'll cut something off right yeah she like flashes her'll cut something off. Right. Yeah. Flashes her scissors. Cut something off.
Yeah.
Gabe is like, don't do it.
She's not going to do it.
She's like, game, shut up.
I'm doing it.
I think she definitely will.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What about this makes you think she won't?
So Addie handcuffs herself to the table and red kind of like sets each person off to pair
up with their thing.
Like, like gives Abraham a like nod to go for Gabe.
And he drags him on the ground through the broken glass from the windows.
And his leg is fucked up from the baseball bat, so he can't like walk.
He's not doing well.
He's not doing well.
And he just gets like dragged off.
And then they tell.
This is another great line
what was her name zora is the daughter's name and uh red i feel like now i'm gonna fuck it up i feel
stressed she just says she just says run yeah little girl run and um lupita's like run run
she's a runner that was set up that was set up. That was set up.
She can't run.
But we must assume so can her tether.
Baby, so can her tether.
But the creepy thing is-
Her tether's actually more of an artist.
Oh, okay.
There's more of a drawer.
That girl was great at playing the tether.
Jesus Christ.
Yeah, she was amazing.
She was so creepy.
And the creepy thing is she just kind of slowly walks after her at first and kind of cracks her knuckles and like stretching like she's about to take off.
She's letting her get a head start.
When you're just like so confident that you're like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Keep going.
And then I'll fucking get you.
To set the scene, too.
It's like it's like when you've got a cabin by the lake.
So it's like a completely pitch dark country street
with a couple other houses and a couple other cars.
Very scary.
The little boy is like, she says like, boys go play or something.
And Lupita says to the kid, show him.
Real Lupita says to her real kid like show him one of your
tricks like he's got little magic tricks that are fire based fire based and then uh red tells a
hilarious joke or she like thinks it's really funny she says don't burn the house down and
that's when she does her really scary laugh boy i can't do the laugh.
So they've all paired off to be with their tethers.
And the boys
go into the closet.
We saw earlier that
Jason, as a son,
goes into this closet and sets a little ambulance
truck as the doorstop, because if
it closes, you get locked in there.
You can't open it from the inside. they go in there to like play and jason kind of finds that he can make the boy mimic his
movements and they're both wearing masks and jason takes off his mask and the other tether jason
takes off his and you see his whole face is like burned isn't his tether's name pluto
pluto that's right that struck me as odd i like really tried to gather some meaning
by all their names and i couldn't really what is the girl's tether i don't know hers either
i just know abraham and and red and now pluto pluto and and yeah so the kid takes off his mask and just he's
all fucked up looking all burnt his face like from the eyes down it's just burnt um and then we like
cut to the girl zora running and she catches her like at what's her name umbrae umbrae so zora's Umbre. Umbre. So Zora is tethered. Umbre. Umbre. So Zora and Umbre have their little moment.
What happens?
A few houses down, they're at this car and they're sort of playing a cat and mouse game
around the car.
And then Zora hides under it and looks under and doesn't see feet on the other side and
realizes that Umbre is up on the car menacing her.
And then this schlubby old dude
comes out of his cottage and is like hey what the fuck get off my car my fucking car kid i'm talking
to you come down here come down here zora just fucking takes off running and in the background
of the shot as she's running away you see umbrae climb down and walk up to this man and just scissors stab he's screaming she just cuts
him up she fucks him up it's not good so they all have scissors they all have scissors yeah don't
love that no then we we see the dad uh gabe like comes to he had been knocked unconscious oh yeah and comes to like in a trash bag on the boat oh no and the um abraham is driving
the boat but we've also previously saw that the boat's motor like just turns off randomly it's a
shitty boat um and so the motor stops and abraham goes to try to like restart it. And Gabe uses that moment to like tear out of the trash bag.
And he just hits him over the head,
knocks him off the side of the boat,
but his foot catches like a life preserver.
They both fall into the water, right?
Yeah.
And then as the motor starts again,
and the force of it flings Gabe off the boat.
So yeah, Gabe's in the water.
Tether's in the water.
But Tether is tethered to the boat.
And the boat drives away and pulls him away.
But then we've also established that the boat is kind of like steers crooked.
Oh, is it bring him back around?
No.
Emily, you're going to hate this.
And Winston Duke in the water goes like,
goes to the fucking left.
God damn it.
Oh, no.
And then, oh, so he's trying to climb back on the boat.
Abraham jumps out of the water like behind him
and grabs behind him and has the scissors still
and is like trying to push the scissors into Gabe's eye.
And it's the thing where Gabe is holding the hand,
and it's like, who's stronger?
It's the Saving Private Ryan, Adam Goldberg death of like...
Yeah.
And then Gabe hits his own head.
Kind of headbutts the...
We didn't understand this, but now that this but the mechanics of it are strange now that you reminded me that they set up the thing about the
motor i think he head butts it oh he has the motor to start it like it's something you just
have to hit it oh okay i think it kind of like breaks his nose because his face is now all bloody
right winston duke really takes a beating in this
so they're both on the boat they're like yes okay um and the motor starts and it and then it hits
abraham backwards and he gets sucked right into that motor abraham the bad one bad one great
also i feel like a really important thing here that I didn't catch the first time is that at one point,
Abraham,
who only grunts is like yelling grunts across the lake and something is like
howling back at him.
You're like,
is it a dog?
What is that?
Right.
And that'll come in just a little,
a little communication happening.
And then we see Jason back in the closet closet he is trying to do the lighter trick it's really
captivating pluto and um when the lighter lights he like gets shocked for a moment and he takes the
opportunity to like run out of the closet and close it on the kid so he can't get out he locks
the tethered one in there. They're all kind of besting
their tethers.
Except for...
Uh-oh.
Addie.
She's handcuffed to a table.
She's handcuffed to a table, but she's eyeing a little fire poker.
Well, yeah. Right before
the kid gets trapped in, Addie's
tether is slowly pushing
her face into a glass coffee table causing
it to like cracking it gives her a great cut on her cheek for the rest of the movie uh and then
yeah like when they hear the kid get trapped real lupita goes like i think that's yours
like referring to the screaming coming from the closet so she goes off to find him and then lupita
finds the fire poker and she like uses it to break the table so she goes off to find him and then lupita finds the fire poker and she like
uses it to break the table so she like gets the handcuffs oh okay so she's still handcuffed but
no longer to the table and she has a fire poker great i'm like yeah this is sounding better yeah
oh emily no um in this moment they all kind of make a run for it right uh lupita and jason the son meet up
they're up in the boat right yeah and then zora like comes back to the house she's she's run back
to the house and they hear the dad in the boat calling to them and they all run get on the boat
just in time just in the nick of time and the end and then everyone lives happily ever
after um then we go over to the white house the heidecker moss uh compound kitty and josh are
their names if we care if we care they have a kitty is kitty is yeah about as about as white
as it gets they have a very nice beach house,
lake house.
They have a backup generator, so when their power
goes out, it kicks right back on.
They have
Alexa
equivalent called Ophelia.
Ophelia, give me some Beach Boys.
Play me some Beach Boys. Good vibrations.
But Elizabeth Moss is like,
there's something outside and he's
like it's probably a pizza guy or something the girls order pizza there's a great scene where like
classic horror movie doofus tim heidecker is like oh wait oh my god i do see something out there
he's like whoa and he's like i think it's it's oj it's oj simpson you get the sense that they
really fucking hate each other. Yeah, definitely.
The girls come out of their room.
Yeah.
They're twins.
They're on a little balcony staircase looking down,
being like, what are you guys doing?
They're very annoying.
It's like, go back to bed.
And then a girl in the red jumpsuit walks out beside them.
Tim Heidecker goes, excuse me, and then stabbing.
Yeah, and then pretty much immediately kills them their tethers waste no time unlike oh so they all have tethers too yes
okay maybe that's who he was yelling at across the lake oh fuck um and they they all get stabbed
right in the necks with the scissors so So quick. They're just dead. Like, immediately.
No time wasted.
Elizabeth survives.
And then Kitty is not dead.
She is doing the old blood gurgling, crawling, army crawling.
And in a fucking pure stroke of genius, one of my favorite parts of the movie, she goes,
Ophelia, call the police.
And Ophelia goes, playing Fuck the Police by N.W by NWA and so the entire next sequence plays
out scored by fuck the police
pure fucking gold so do we
think then so
maybe we'll get here do the tethers
exist purely because of Lupita
we'll get there okay
okay but then I take it back
at this point
you're not sure we don't know yeah
so then he the tethers kill Kitty.
They slit her throat.
Oh, no.
Okay.
Well, she lived a little bit.
Elizabeth Moss has a fucking ball playing the tether.
Can I say that?
Yeah.
She does.
She makes a fucking meal of it.
I feel like this was probably a pretty fun movie to act in.
Yeah.
We kept talking about how to play both versions must have been so fun.
Yeah.
I think Elizabeth Moss is having a blast in her whole career right now.
She can pretty much do whatever.
Thanks to the Scientology gods.
Thanks to them.
Thanks be to them.
Thanks be to them.
Thanks really be to them.
Great.
Thanks be to Zeno.
them.
Thanks really be to them.
Thanks be to
Zeno.
So then the
boat like comes
up Addie and
all of them
are show up
for help.
Tim Heidecker's
tether opens the
door.
He's put a little
robe over his
tether jumpsuit.
So they think it
might not be a
tether.
No Lupita
immediately knows
because he has
like a strangeness
about him and
she just no questions
ask fire pokers him in the head oh fuck yeah and and Gabe I think he's like what like what are you
doing and um but he she doesn't kill him she just like kind of injures him and then he goes after
Gabe he Gabe kind of kind of runs kind of tries to draw him away down towards their boat.
And that's when I was talking about Tim Heidecker does the really weird physical walk down the stairs.
He's also making like, yeah, pterodactyl noises is how I would describe it.
It's wild.
Oh, man.
This must have been so wild to action.
Now I want to see it just to appreciate those choices.
That's like crazy. He has some fun with
it for sure. And Addie
gets pulled into the house. The like twins
and like all the tethers like grab her
and pull her in. And right now it's
just the white family
family but the
yes. Yeah. They're wait. Lapita's
tether. Not here. Not here right now.
Yes. Correct. Correct. Zola Zora. Lapita's tether... Not here right now. Not here right now. Yes. Correct, correct.
Zola?
Zora.
Zora's tether is not there.
Okay.
So now it's Jason and Zora are left to go rescue their mom from these tethers.
And they see the dead bodies of their family friends.
Rough stuff.
Rough stuff.
They've been having a bad trip.
Yeah.
That's Greg's review of it. Must have been rough for them. Pretty rough. Pretty rough stuff. stuff they've been having a bad trip yeah that's Greg's review
of it
must have been rough
for them
pretty rough
pretty rough stuff
rough day
so they
she has
Zora has a golf club
and Jason picks up
like a
big like
big geode
okay
that would be like
a heavy blunt object
uh huh
they go upstairs
and see like the twin tethers kind of moving around.
And then like out of one hallway, one of them cartwheels out at her.
And she just hits her with the golf club and knocks her over the balcony.
And she like crashes down below.
So now it's just one of the twins.
Great.
Yeah.
This is Zara's big fucking badass.
She reveals herself to be a badass.
Yes.
So the other one, the other twin,
like we're looking through the hallways.
It's a tense scene.
And the other one like pops up
and she just like beats the shit.
She beats her to death.
And you kind of get the impression
that she didn't like these family friends. maybe this was with like brewing a mini golf putter and she's
she's not using the hitting end she's using the stick end so she's like jabbing her in the face
with just a like stick essentially to death and it's wild damn yeah so elizabeth moss tether has lupita
tied up in the bedroom again this is all happening to fuck the police yep great very great it's just
fun um oh so then it goes out to the boat and we see gabe and tim heidecker's um fight he fires a
flare he lures him into the cabin of the boat and fires a flare
gun at him. And I think he thinks the flare
is going to be like a real gun. Yeah.
He's like, I got him. And it's just like a light.
But instead it fills
the little cabin with smoke and a lot.
It looks cool. It's very cool.
Trailer moment. Trailer moment for sure when he
has the gun.
And you just see them. It kind of pulls out
and you'd see just them fighting
and hear the like pterodactyl screaming
and then we see Elizabeth Moss
tether watching from the window
screaming without making noise,
like making the faces of screaming
and then starts laughing without noise
and it's just a real fun performance um and in this moment of
her kind of being distracted looking out the window zora is sneaking up from behind but she's
looking out a window which you has reflections and so as zora like goes for the swing elizabeth
mott just turns around and grabs it and like is pushing her onto the bed.
Lupita is really freaking out, trying to like flip over the bedpost to save her.
Yeah.
And Elizabeth Moss is giving her the like a smiling like, I'm going to kill your daughter while you watch is the vibe right now.
But Jason's got his geode, guys.
Jason's got his geode.
Jason's got his G-O'd, guys. Jason's got his G-O'd. Jason's got a rock.
And he kills her in one.
One easy little swoop.
Boop.
Dead.
Damn.
And now we're pretty much, the family's just kind of chilling around the coffee table.
Yeah, we get a little regrouping.
Regroup scene.
They're calling the police again. The 911
is no answer. Oh, no. Okay, so
he killed
Tim Heidecker's tether in that fight?
Oh, yes, he comes back in and we get...
It was kind of glossed over, though.
I wonder if something got edited out there,
because you don't see what happened. Yeah, maybe. You don't see it.
Yeah, they're maybe like, ah, we don't end up
needing this. He comes in, like, bloody.
He was bloody before, I guess, but yeah, he comes in bloody and they're like okay like so every tether except for lapidas
zoras and jason's has been killed yes okay so we got three tethers left uh or so we think oh no
uh and then we uh we pop on the old local news and let's see what's going on let's find out
what's happening in the world what do you think's on the local news a lot. Yeah, let's see what's going on. Let's find out what's happening in the world.
What do you think's on the local news?
A lot of tethers. A lot of
stabbings happening.
On air. People coming out of the
sewer on the boardwalk with scissors
and attacking everyone.
There's like some cell phone
footage of like, and
they're all holding hands.
Oh no.
Informing big lines okay so
are they all wearing the red jumpsuits
they are
just for my own curiosity
is the brain is the forecast brain
what am I saying
what is the
brain what is it
pause nothing but the podcast
the news are they reporting
like a normal news coverage of footage of this or are they also being stabbed it's kind of
pandemonium news it's they're like it's too early to say what's happening we don't know what's going
on we hope everything's gonna be okay over there like i see seem stressed. So this seems contained just to the boardwalk zone?
For now, that's what we... Yeah.
I mean, at least for the local news station.
Great. I feel like the
implication is that Hands Across
America is happening as we speak
and whatever these tethers
are, are, like, the shadow selves
of the entire world, so they are
also doing Hands Across America.
They've definitely been inspired by Hands Across America. They've been inspired. Yeah. And I don't really understand the rules of the entire world so they are also doing Hands Across America they've definitely been inspired by Hands Across America
they've been inspired
and I don't really understand the rules of the game here
but it seems like you the tethers
have to do what the like
real ones are doing that's my big
question walking away from the movie
is like when do they have to do
things and when can they act with autonomy
when do they get agency yeah
so that's not really answered I don't that's the
if I had to nitpick a thing that I
feel like I walked away
right after it ended we were kind of like
wait a second yeah
okay yeah I want to know what else
what like the rest of the movie is but I have
like lots of questions about what the philosophical
meaning is behind this movie like what it's
trying to say I can't wait I can't wait
there's also a part earlier when they're all in the room together across the by the like fireplace meeting
them for the first time where they're like what are you people and they and she says we're americans
oh my god is this another commentary on capitalism i feel like horror movies are just about capitalism
why does everyone have this bone to pick with capitalism?
Honestly, what's wrong with it?
We pull out from them around watching the news,
and there's just the dead twins' body between all of them,
which I thought was very funny.
Oh, the one that's on the coffee table.
Yes, they're just casually gathered around her dead body watching the news.
So now Winston Duke wants to stay here and hole up.
And Lupita's like, we got to keep moving.
They know us.
They think like us.
That line from the trailer.
And so she gives Winston Duggar really hard, like, you don't get to make the decisions anymore.
And he referenced, wait, he's like, so wait here, we'll set up up some traps like home alone and she's like you did you seriously just reference home alone and then
there's like a little comic relief for one of the kids it's like what's home alone
um but yeah she's like she's like no we are not staying here we gotta we gotta go and they go out
to the car they all get in the car that she doesn't have the car keys or they're like she
goes back for the car i'll just pop back in the house, grab the keys.
Yeah, by herself.
Won't be any problems there.
Looks at the old coffee table.
Guess whose body is missing.
The old twin is not to be seen.
And she just goes and snatches.
What does she grab, actually?
Another blunt object, I think.
Something.
A weapon of sorts.
A weapon of sorts. A weapon of sorts.
Jason, her kid comes back in and sees her really brutally killing them.
Yeah.
And you can tell it makes an impression on him.
Yeah.
So the twin, like, pops up on her.
She uses some weapon.
And she also starts, like, making crazy noises while she, like, makes a weird noise while
she's killing.
She's just like.
crazy noises while she like makes a weird noise while she's killing she's just like and he walks in like at the moment of her like stabbing this girl and like blood all over her
and she's like okay i got the keys like let's go and jason's like what the fuck
at this point in the movie and even earlier brothe has a theory
oh i don't want to say my theory right now.
We'll come back.
So at this moment, remember everyone,
insert Broti's theory.
This is a moment where she goes, I think
my theory is right. Yeah.
Well, I was thinking that it was wrong for a lot
of it. Yeah. Okay.
I'm excited. There's a fun
part of the car. Zora
is in the driver's seat. Yeah. She's like, she's like, I'm driving. I have the highest part of the car. Zora is in the driver's seat.
She's like, I'm driving.
I have the highest kill count.
He says, I have the highest kill count.
I'm driving.
Dad's leg's messed up.
You're handcuffed.
I'm driving.
I have the highest kill count.
Are our hands handcuffed to each other?
No.
I think it's... Are they?
I think just one is maybe dangling loose.
Oh, I thought they were still handcuffed to each other.
Maybe they are together.
Oh, damn.
Okay. They are. They are. They they were still handcuffed to each other. Oh, damn. Okay.
They are.
They are.
Because it comes in handy later.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. and Josh. They're arguing over the old kill count and then Zora's tether
Umbre is
in the driveway and so it's
like, okay, we gotta go.
No debate. So Zora is driving because that's
the way it is. Gabe
is like, okay, you're gonna want to reverse
like away from her and she's
like, I'm gonna floor
instead. They floored at her and she's like i'm gonna floor and instead they floored at her and umbrae just
delicately hops on top of the car as it as they approach so we get some stabbing through the sun
roof some stabbing through the windshield she turned yeah some impressive scissors yeah yeah
um and eventually she's going real fast z, and does the slamming on the brakes.
Smart.
And like flings Umbre into the woods.
Lupita hops out, checks out the scene, and you kind of see her like head in the trees
and the bushes like reaching out towards Lupita.
And then you see her feet like.
Oh, right. Like she's not in oh right like she's not in a good
she's not in a good position her feet shouldn't be there where her hand is
arguably be going in the other direction great so she's done for and um Lupita kind of comforts
her as she dies she's like because she just is like because it's, shh, shh. Because it's weird. It looks like your daughter.
And she just kind of comforts her and then
she dies.
And then they get back in the car and drive till
daytime, right? Yeah.
And now the sun's coming up. They're driving around
the boardwalk, dead bodies everywhere.
Do they see some people holding hands
right here? Yeah, that's where they
start to see it, I think.
On the beach. they come upon their
own car on fire oh no they drive up to it and it's like the little boys tether pluto is there
and like lupita's like everyone stay here i'm gonna get out and then like the kid jason in
the car is like wait this is a trap and you see that like there's a line of gasoline going from the car on fire
to directly under the car that they are
all in
and there's a very tense showdown between
Lupita and Pluto
I'm just gonna continue
interchanging actors
pretty much how
it goes all the time
it's very hard not to
and then Jason
kind of remembers like I can
make Pluto
follow my movements
and so he walks
he gets out of the car and walks
backwards I didn't get that
and now you're
explaining it to me
and so Pluto
walks backwards into the fire and but in in um
jason's moving backwards he's kind of separated from the family a bit oh no and in a very creepy
shot um red like is against a red car and like pops out. Mary Tobias in Arrested Development.
Blue Man.
Yeah.
And she snatches Jason
and runs with him
and we don't see where they go.
But Addie has an idea
of where they might be going
and kind of chases back to
Carl F. Mears.
Yes.
Where she sees going out into
the water a big chain of people holding hands zora and uh gabe hole up in an ambulance where
they see people by the roller coaster holding hands it's it's dicey and then addy is walking
through the she's walking through this hall of mirrors which i'm still at at this point. I'm like, is this like a supernatural place?
And then she kind of goes into like the boiler room and like the back.
OK, OK, no, this is just a regular hall of mirrors until she gets to.
This escalator that just goes straight down and is probably the coolest shot of the movie.
Yeah.
It's like this gold.
Yeah.
It's just escalator.
Uh huh. Uh huh. movie yeah um it's like this gold yeah it's just escalator uh-huh uh-huh the whole it's like a hallway going down that's only wide enough for an escalator she is bloody and handcuffed and
holding a fire poker and going down the escalator and it's the radish she looks off she looks so
badass yeah she's fucking ready to get her son back. There's also rabbits everywhere in this place.
And so she's going down into this like, I don't know.
Hallways and classrooms.
It does say in the beginning, it opens on some text that just says like there's a lot
of abandoned subways and tunnels like under America.
Oh, yeah.
And so we're in some sort of abandoned tunnel thing that has like
rabbit cages everywhere and like classrooms classrooms yeah and she walks into one of the
classrooms and red is in there drawing a little stick figure hands across america on like a
chalkboard carving with scissors into the chalk subtitles said like scissors and I was
like oh well it seemed like she's doing that thing where like you cut out like
the little paper yeah their hands holding across yeah okay okay yeah seems
like she's doing a craft she's doing a craft in the classroom. Red, read the room.
We don't have time for this.
So then we get Red's like the second half of her exposition on what's going on here.
Oh, great, great, great.
She says that they figured out how to copy a person's body, but not their soul.
Yeah, we're human.
We're humans too. We have blood and soul, but not the soul. And we human we're humans too we have blood it's all but not the soul and
we were created by humans to control this is where it gets away from me a little bit
i wish that this part had been more satisfying yeah so they're basically like a failed science
experiment is what we get so you see you see some flashbacks you see the flashback to like her
the scene where she wanders away
from the boardwalk in the beginning.
As a kid.
And it intercuts with what's happening in the tunnel.
So like when she sees two,
like a couple sitting there
feeding like cotton candy to each other,
you see the couple down in the tunnels
and they're like ravenously.
It's like the disgusting version of everything.
Like nasty bloody meat.
And you see the little girl version of Lupita,
that shadow,
like wandering away and up the escalator
into the Hall of Mirrors
when she's wandering down.
Yeah, okay.
She's saying things like,
God wanted us to meet.
I never stopped thinking about you.
And did she talk about the dance here?
She's like...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
She's like,
when you danced,
and this is all like, when you danced, and this is all intercut with footage of her dancing in the real world as a 14-year-old, I presume.
In a big arena.
Yeah, she's really good.
And that gave young Red the talent to do a dance for all the tethered and like made her seem special to
all of them so this is kind of how she like became the leader yeah because she can do things that
they can't she's like and to think like if it weren't for you i never would have danced
so oh it's tough yeah it's so I don't understand the experiment
me neither okay so that's just not
explained so why did she have to
pull why do they have to eat
when they eat why'd she have to
c-section herself I don't know
I don't know what's voluntary and what's involuntary
okay but
and who started this experiment
like the American government started
it to control human beings.
Has Jordan Peele been asked these questions and does he have an answer?
I haven't looked it up.
Yeah.
It was Reagan.
I presume.
Ronald Reagan.
Yeah.
You get the big bat, the final showdown sequence, which is intercut with the ballet dancing.
The editing is great.
Yeah.
So like real Lupita is charging after her and fighting and shadow Lupita is just dancing
around, nearing with the dancing.
She's like dancing to avoid her.
And Red is like effortlessly winning this fight.
She stabs her in the hand.
Yeah.
With the scissors and is just like.
She's toying with her.
Yeah.
Addie can't like get a single hit in she's like dancing around her
slicing her with a scissors she like cuts her a few times just having some fun with it all to to
a to a very beautiful i got five on it orchestral version that's from the trailer great and then
she like goes into the little bunk room and um red is like hiding in a corner and just as she like jumps out at her addy turns
around fire pokers are through the chest fully impaled yeah she finds real jason hiding in one
of the like lockers not yet oh first so she like she's she's like red Red is dying and she lowers onto the ground and...
Oh, Bertie looks excited.
The cuffs!
Yeah.
Addie takes those handcuffs, wraps them around her neck and the sound of breaking...
She breaks her neck and she's making crazy sounds now.
She's like...
And snaps her neck and it makes the nastiest sound.
And then she just starts like screaming while she's killing her, right?
And then just starts laughing.
And then we see that Jason was hiding in the locker.
And saw it all.
And saw it all.
And he is not, he does not like what he saw.
He didn't like it.
And he's not talking.
Weird.
He's not talking like she was when she was traumatized right his trauma seems larger larger than her
you get that moment where she's like oh my god he's gonna be traumatized just like and she's
like it's okay it's okay like it's it's over now like we're gonna be safe like it's gonna go back to normal but there are still a bunch of them
outside holding hands wow so we cut now they go up their family is in the ambulance driving away
and then she remembers something she looks at jason and so brought these theory that she had
immediately early on and then abandoned through a large swath of the movie and then was right.
And that's why she didn't want to talk about it earlier because it would have been spoilers.
Okay.
We flash back to the first incident in the Hall of Mirrors.
Yeah, where they first, where Addie and Red first meet.
And then you see Red put her hands around addie's neck and then um you know
just enough to knock her out pulls her into the tether world and then she leaves the tether she
like handcuffs her to a bed yeah puts on her shirt and leaves and then you cut to like her in the back
of the car when the parents are like,
you left her there!
And you see her smiling.
It was like, encourage her to learn how to dance.
Right.
So she is red.
Addie is red.
They swapped.
They switched places.
When they were children.
Emily's looking incredibly shocked.
I knew this the whole movie
because Sammy had told me.
So I was like, I was really trying to.
Emily looks like she's never going to speak again.
Not unlike Jason.
She's a tether.
What were you going to say about Jason?
You said she looks at Jason and then it's a flashback.
Jason knows maybe.
Well, you think for a second, is he flip-flopped?
Yes.
Otherwise, he would have burns on his faces
and then she kind of like winks at him a little bit.
I don't think he's flip-flopped,
but she's just kind of like,
I got away with it again.
Oh, my God.
And then a brutal, brutal, they're driving away, right?
And you see this like shot
that's following them, an aerial shot. uh that's following them an aerial shot and then it
becomes like an aerial shot of just the countryside as the song plays who was the artist
um uh minnie ripperton minnie ripperton who i was wondering if maybe she sang something related to
hands across america and that was maybe but as it's panning over the rolling hills you start to see
that the line of people in red jumpsuits holding hands it's very long it's very very long and
there's like helicopters hovering and like some like smoke and fires and shit and that's it okay
so hold on so okay so as a kid the woman who we know she's changing her stance she's crawling
onto the floor for some reason to ask this question we know to be what was her name addy
addy has been the shadow version of her her whole and that's why she's the only one that can speak
none of the tethers can speak except for her because she came from above yeah because and she like
but then how did
this is where it gets muddy
it gets muddy
the tether version was the parent to
the kids married to Gabe yes
so why can she talk
she learned to she was young
she stopped speaking
because she couldn't she learned
and so
when they encourage her to learn how to
dance yes and she's quiet
in into adulthood there's
like a lot of mentions so the one who
comes to attack with this family
is the real one and she
knows that yes
okay
the thing that's weird about it is that wouldn't
the real girl not be forced to do
things that the other one is forced yeah this is where it falls maybe yeah yeah and why doesn't
she just immediately go like once upon a time i was fucking real and you switched places with me
or like when she would be shorter would she find the escalator like the other girl she was
handcuffed and she talks about how like when they made her the leader she planned this all out she's
all these shots of them all standing in a line with their scissors and it was like everything
had to be perfect and but also yeah it made me go like why do they need to wait for her to come
back to the boardwalk it seems like they can go anywhere and do anything okay okay so so so so
so okay okay okay so then the so okay so when then when red so when when addy kills red it's really
red finally killing addy so she wins and she gets to live with no shadow version
forever.
But
the shadows have seemingly
taken over and I don't know if they
know that she's one of them.
Now where do we go from here?
Really muddy sequel if they tried to make it.
Yeah, I bet they won't. It'd be tough.
But I think that there's maybe some sort
of like nature versus nurture concept's gotta be something like that because it's like so much of
what like fundamentally made the tethers was like made them in the like tunnels and living in the
tunnels not only that but like so much of what fundamentally made them different from humans was that you couldn't replicate a soul.
Right.
And so like it.
So then Lupita's character, like above ground, somehow managed to like make a soul.
Or at least like, yeah, live.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She's acting.
She is.
Wow.
She's a great actress.
She's acting.
She is acting. That's interesting. Interesting That's interesting So this is a movie about acting
This is a movie about Hollywood
And honestly what it means to be a good friend
Yeah
Friendship and acting in Hollywood
I'm also trying to
Suss out in my brain like deeper meaning
Because you watch it and you
I came away going
like great much less about race than get out get out as much like it everything makes sense in it
why is that great for you no no no let me finish by that why is that great for you i came out
thinking like it's much less about race and more of a straight up horror movie and then when we
were talking about last night at pictionary uh a friend of mine who's black said made a comment of like yeah us was really a movie for
us like there was so much stuff in there and i was like fuck what am i and now like i keep thinking
about it like obviously all the cultural references like she's wears a thriller shirt and like five on
it and fuck the police and then also like but now i'm trying to read into like the message of like second class citizens
and like rising up and
how they have to change themselves to assimilate
and like we have to go through the same
shit but it's all worse like we're living
the same life as you but you have like a nice hot
meal and we have to like yeah I think it was
much more it was maybe more
about race than get out but much more
like subtle and like
whereas get out was so explicit right
yeah right because yeah i also do wonder like i mean it doesn't seem like it came into play
in the way i necessarily thought but like why this rich white family that lives next to them
that has all this better shit but then like they still have tethers and did their tethers have the
same life well that that it is interesting because it's like the the Tim Heidecker family is a little bit
the above ground family
to them you know
we have a boat with a shittier boat
we have the house with no backup generator
right right right right right
I'm gonna do I need to like look up a lot
of stuff me too
I wish I had we hadn't watched it so recently
so we'd have had time
to research I also though
like that trailer looked, it just looks like
a very cool movie
sort of regard. Like it's okay to me if it
isn't like, oh my god, this blew
my mind. It just looks like a very
cool movie. I
had a lot of fun watching it. This was my
third time seeing it and I
think it's great. And it murdered
at the box office, right?
I think so.
It's like a huge hit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So great.
