I'm Mike from torontomike.com, and joining me this week to kick out the jams is actress Alexandra Beaton. Hello.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Welcome, Alexandra. Thanks for having me. And I said this before we started recording, but it's the truth. It has never smelled so good down here. It's what I do. It's what I bring with me. Because I have a teenage son who sleeps around the corner and he won't believe it when he comes back after school. But it's a pleasure to meet you.
Starting point is 00:01:44 And let's just tell everyone right off the bat, who is your mother? My mother is Kate Wheeler. I call her mom, which she tends to like sometimes that I'm her daughter, but everyone else calls her Kate Wheeler. You never call her Kate? Sometimes I call her Kate. If we are working together or something like that, I'll call her Kate. But what about Ms. Wheeler? Is that a... That's never something that's come out of my mouth. What about...
Starting point is 00:02:10 You know what I always thought? Like when people have the last name Wheeler, don't they get the nickname Wheels? Or is that just a guy thing? I think that's just a guy thing. Oh, girls don't... Okay. Because Wheels, of course, the fictional character Derek Wheeler from the Degrassi series. We called him Wheeler.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Wheeler. Interesting. And it's a sad story, of course, because Derek, the actor who played Wheels, died. But we didn't find out he died until five years later. Like, this is a real life. Yeah, this is not like some character development in the series. This is real life yeah this is not like some character development in the series this is real life like five years after he passed like they went public with this news oh my god i know and he was the coolest he was one of the zit remedy oh i and i know you're um i should tell
Starting point is 00:02:57 everyone you're not in addition to being cute kate wheeler's daughter uh by the way, after your mom was here for her episode with Christine Bentley, we, um, we found out somebody, uh, picked up an Australian accent in her voice, which I had no idea. Like I talked to her for like 90 minutes and never, I don't hear this, but I, you know, but somebody detected it and yeah, I guess there's a Australian roots. I had no idea. Did you make her mad? Cause her Australian accent comes out when she's mad. I think she was mad when she realized this is what she was recording. I think she had higher standards, but more like Christine was mad about that. But yeah, I had a great episode with your mom, Kate Wheeler, who everyone listening knows from CTV, CFTO news. And it's
Starting point is 00:03:44 a pleasure to meet you. And I actually had to Google you because I knew about you because my daughter watches your show and we'll dive into this in a minute. But in my mind, because I've seen your show in the background, like when my daughter's watching it.
Starting point is 00:03:56 So in my mind, you were like 16 years old. Right, right. I'm not. But you're not 16. No, no, no. That's a fake out. And it's important that we know for the record, because I'm going to give you something soon. For the record, you are over the age of 19.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Yes, I am 22. So you can legally drink. I can legally drink. Thank goodness. That's going to be important in a minute. Now, before we talk about that series, my daughter watched The Next Step. I'm on your IMDb page. You were in 300?
Starting point is 00:04:27 This is every guy's favorite fact. It's the best movie. All my guy friends, if they introduce me to somebody, regardless of the fact I've done countless other things since this movie, me being in 300 is the number one fun thing about me when it comes to guys. What a great movie. Great movie. Great movie. What are you in there?
Starting point is 00:04:45 Like you're a child, obviously. I was quite little when we filmed it in Montreal, actually, which not a lot of people know. No, I never would have guessed that. Yeah, Montreal. I'm a burned village child. You probably thought I was a boy. Surprise, I am female. I was a boy. Surprise, I am female. And I had really short hair and I come out of this destroyed village and I speak to Gerard Butler and then I die in his arms. Okay. How old were you when
Starting point is 00:05:14 you filmed 300? I was 11, 12. I can't exactly remember. I would have taken the under on that. So, wow. Okay. So, yeah, that's amazing. So next time I watched 300, I'll be looking for this burn child and I'll say, I know that person. I know that person. That's cool. So that was for me. So for dad, you were in 300. There's a movie I love now, my daughter. Okay. So my daughter's now 13, but, um, she was always, she would watch this show called the next step. And the way I'm going to just, you're going to describe it accurately because you are Emily. I am. I'm going to describe, you're going to describe it accurately because you are Emily.
Starting point is 00:05:46 I am. I'm Emily in The Next Step. In The Next Step. So the way I would, when I watched it and I would tune in and I would kind of get into it a bit. It's like, I want to call it like a faux reality show. Yeah, it's pseudo reality. So it's filmed exactly like current day reality television, but it's scripted and I'm a character on it. Can I play a bit of this? Of course. This is you in, I'm a character on it. Can I play a bit of this? Of course.
Starting point is 00:06:05 This is you in, I'm trying to find the next step. Let's hear, it's only about 45 seconds. I would call this the best of Emily. Do you want to be my duet partner? I don't even know what to say to him. This is probably the 1031st time I've turned him down. If I have to do it one more time, I might just kick myself. Stop talking to him. He's my look Michelle he doesn't want to be your partner get over it if he didn't want to be my partner then why would he say yes
Starting point is 00:06:33 obviously he just felt bad for you why would he feel bad for me well what's wrong with me I mean the shirt nice sweater by the way it's really red they're just trying to mess with our heads and i totally respect that that bus was disgusting i don't like i'm never doing that again so emily's like you except with some sass right there's yeah she's attitude she has a lot of attitude you gotta eat this microphone sorry i know you're she has a better mic she has a lot of attitude. You got to eat this microphone. Sorry. I know you're using a better mic. She has a lot of attitude in her, which I love, especially because we do get to improv a lot in the show.
Starting point is 00:07:11 So it's almost nice to play such a mean character with absolutely no consequences. So I go to set. It's like therapy. And then I leave. I know you have to be more diplomatic than I can, but is it fair to say that you're like a star in this show? Like you might be the most popular character on this show, possibly.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Michelle, who is my good friend, Victoria Baldessara, is the other lead. But yeah, me and her are the two leads of the show. And okay, how long is it still? You still film. So when did it? How long has it been running for? Five years now. And now my daughter's playing it.
Starting point is 00:07:46 I don't know where she's playing it. Like, where do you see the next step? You can watch it on Family Channel. Family Channel. Okay, okay. Or if you're in the States, you can watch it on Universal Kids. Now, you're also a competitive dancer. I am.
Starting point is 00:07:59 My daughter's a competitive dancer. The one who watches The Next Step. Her name is Michelle, by the way. Oh, that's funny. So I was talking to her last night and I said that you were coming on. And this is, I'm going to quote her because I don't know quite what this means.
Starting point is 00:08:11 But can you do a, can you shout her out? Yeah, I can shout her out. Hey, Michelle, how are you, girl? Hope you're listening to this. I'm sure you do. It's your dad's podcast. You know, she never, she listened. I had my three-year-old son.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Her brother was on to kick out the jams. And she listened to that. And I think that's the only episode she's ever listened to. That's very. So this might be number two. Well, hey, Michelle, shout out to you, girl. When she said have her shout, she said, shout her out. Yeah, that was great, I think.
Starting point is 00:08:38 I don't know what you kids are looking for. But she said, like, shout her out. Like, you don't know what that means. And then she did, like shout her out like you don't know what that means and then she did she just she did like hey michelle and you did exactly what she wanted you to do like you knew what that meant it's like you have there's a code i'm missing out on so that's very cool how did you get the role in the next step i think the way most actors get their roles i auditioned quite a few times i think four or five times when they were casting for season one.
Starting point is 00:09:08 So I went in and I had a dance audition. Then I had another dance audition. Then I had two acting auditions. Oh, I guess maybe it was only four times. Now I have a request. Can we do the rest of the interview? Can you give me the attitude I hear from Emily? Honestly, it's so funny.
Starting point is 00:09:22 People ask me that all the time. They're like, can you do it? Can you do it? And I'm like, I can't just like pull her on like a second skin. I have to be, I have to be like in her hair and makeup and her wardrobe and studio. Hey,
Starting point is 00:09:36 like it's, there's so many things that, that come into play when you're reaching that level of sass. Well, when Jim Carrey played Andy Kaufman, right, he assumed the persona of Andy even when he was not filming. Like he became Andy.
Starting point is 00:09:51 So you are not going to do that kind of method acting where, you know, right now you're going to be Emily, who's a bit of a B word. And you seem rather pleasant. Thank you. Nice. And I'm like, where is this attitude? I guess that's why they call it acting. That's why I've never acted because I'm always the same and
Starting point is 00:10:10 consistent. I don't know how to put on a mask. So the next step, it's still filming and it films here. Yes. In Toronto. Cool. Like now you're all aging. So like, is it like, is this, you can keep going with this, I guess. Why not? Right. I don't know. It's not up to me. We have an amazing team of writers on the show, so I kind of just listen to their direction. All right, cool, cool. Now, there's another... You tell me what this is about. Spiral?
Starting point is 00:10:35 Sure. So Spiral is my latest project. It's about my character, Emma. She has a reoccurring dream with this girl in it, and you find out later in the series the girl's name is sophie and basically one day in school she sees this girl and the next day she finds her dead and it is a solid trip down the rabbit hole post that is there some rule you have where you will only play characters named emily or emma um no rule i think i just
Starting point is 00:11:05 look like somebody who would have an you look like an emma yeah you do look like emma uh and i mean every second girl being born right now is being named emily anyways which emma yeah i think it's very very common right now super common so why not everyone can relate to an emma or an emily and just make sure like your next role i don don't know, you're probably auditioning for things all the time. I don't care what it says in the script. Like they might have it down as I don't know,
Starting point is 00:11:30 what's another name people have like Sophia or whatever. No, you change that. It's Emily. Okay. I'll let them know. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Now, my daughter, one more thing about my daughter Michelle when I told her you're coming on and she, on the internet, she screen caps like an ad that you're in. So this is like a skin cream.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Yeah, I'm the face of Vichy Canada, which is actually a great skincare brand that I do actually use. People ask me that all the time. I'm like, do they actually use it? Do you use it? I'm like, yes, every morning and night. But yes, I'm the face of Vichy Canada. I'm now checking out your complexion that's okay um looks good to me no blemishes on that face there so very good now you're making you're making some mad coin for a young woman right because uh i don't know you know you must uh require big bucks there and uh you even drove here like and but i go two ways on this like at the beginning now i'm an old man now like right so i. So I'm thinking, okay,
Starting point is 00:12:26 she's not 16. She's like 22. So in my mind though, 22 is like so young and I'm like, Oh my God. But then I look, I remember like I was married and living on my own at 22. Right. Like,
Starting point is 00:12:35 it's like, it's sort of funny when you look at it from here. You're not married. No, smart because I'm not, I'm married to someone else now. It's never a wise thing. Uh,
Starting point is 00:12:43 but, uh, it's funny how like it works like that like at the time when i was 22 i felt very old and mature yeah but now i mean i felt like that at 13 and now looking back i'm like you were far far far from it was you're quick to make that realization some of us don't realize how stupid we were until we're in our 30s well i want to be stupid like I don't want to grow up too fast. I think, I think everybody has, especially with social media and stuff,
Starting point is 00:13:10 everybody has this desire to be older and I don't necessarily want to be older. Every year I get older, there's more and more responsibilities I have to face. So I just like being my age when I'm my age. Very wise, very wise. Um, Going back to your mom for a minute. You don't mind if I go back to your mom? No, not at all. Okay. So what kind of, is it, you know, mom, your mom modeled? Yeah, she did. She's absolutely beautiful. No, I mean, you look like your mom and your mom is beautiful. And if your mom's listening, she probably will check in on this. If your mom wants to come in one day and kick out the jams with me. She should. She has some great taste in music.
Starting point is 00:13:47 She should. She should come in and kick out the jams and we'll see if there's any overlap, mother and daughter. That would be funny. Because we're going to hear your jam soon. Yeah. But what kind of, I guess that helped you enter this field, like because your mom was like familiar with it? I would say so. If anything, it's just the understanding of the field. A lot of people don't really understand the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes just to get one job. I mean, you can audition hundreds of times and come out with nothing, even if you are doing your best. So it's more just the understanding and the constant support that that goes on with both my mom and my dad.
Starting point is 00:14:26 constant support that that goes on with both my mom and my dad um but i imagine it would be a lot harder if i didn't have somebody who already kind of knew the ropes yeah for sure and uh she can also she knows all the like pratfalls like she knows where where you got to be careful and where people will try to take advantage of you and stuff so she can give you know have your back that way exactly she won't be caught off guard she knows all the tricks did you uh are they still filming new degrassi episodes i honestly don't know they might be right this is like a bad canadian actor thing but i am not a huge fan of degrassi like i don't even think i've seen one episode not even the uh the drake years not even the drake years i don't know where i was or what I was doing, but not even, which is crazy. But yeah, I was never a huge Degrassi fan.
Starting point is 00:15:09 I'm sure it's an amazing show. See, I can't speak for the new stuff. I have to go back and tell you that I recently, so there's a YouTube account and I can't remember the name, but they recently uploaded all the Degrassi Junior High episodes went there. So like on the weekend, like that just passed. No, two weekends ago, maybe. I re-watched the very first episode of Degrassi Junior High,
Starting point is 00:15:32 which you've never seen. I already know. But it was the one with Stephanie Kay running for class president. And it was all the way of Stephanie Kay. And she would like come to work, dress conservatively. And then would like come to work dressed, she would come to school dressed conservatively. And then she'd go to the bathroom
Starting point is 00:15:47 and change into like more revealing outfit and makeup, put makeup on. Because I think, and I never went to a junior high, but I guess you're grade eight or something. I don't know quite how it works actually. I have to plead ignorance on the junior high thing. But did you go to a junior high? No.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Where are these things? I don't know. I think junior highs must be a made up thing junior high thing but did you go to a junior high no where are these things i don't know i i think junior highs must be a made-up thing because i don't i don't know anyone who went to a junior high i thought maybe like toronto just didn't have very many junior highs like that was my i don't know i always went to and a lot of my friends went from like grade one to grade eight then high school well this degrassi junior high was fantastic when I watched it and I guess I was wondering if you ever auditioned for Degrassi because every young actress in Toronto ends up auditioning I think I
Starting point is 00:16:29 have auditioned for Degrassi a few times yeah but yeah I don't know why it never whenever I was flipping through channels I was never like oh I should check out you were probably pissed they didn't they didn't hire you like fuck you guys you was like, fuck you guys. You can swear on this podcast. Okay. It's okay. I was going to say, like, you're rooting against them. You want them to fail because they turned you down. In general, I love Canadian-made TV shows and movies and anything creative. I think it's so good for Canada. The next step, which is where most people know you,
Starting point is 00:17:07 is it fair to say that demo is like the young females? I can say this, right? It's a young female. I wouldn't necessarily like say female. I would definitely say young, maybe like 8 to 15. I know that's a broad age range, but we do deal with some mature stuff. But male and female, I mean, dance in general seems to be branching out other than just a female-dominated thing. Because there's male characters in this.
Starting point is 00:17:27 And there's, yeah, there's tons of male characters and they can really, really move. And we've had some great reactions to young boys who have started dance because of it. And I think that's amazing. Because there's an obsessive wiki page I discovered. Yeah, that wiki page is something else. I've seen it.
Starting point is 00:17:44 So there's a few things on Alexandra that I learned from the Next Step wiki. Oh, really? Just a few things. And I got wiki page is something else. I've seen it. So there's a few things on Alexandra that I learned from the Next Step wiki. Oh, really? Just a few things. And I got to see how accurate these are. Okay. Alexandra has read all the Harry Potter books 10 times. That's true.
Starting point is 00:17:55 That's true. That's very true. You didn't get bored. Like the ninth time you were like... I still read them. I love those books. I have not read one. Oh my gosh. But I was like an old man when they came out. They're read them. I love those books. I have not read one. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:18:05 But I was like an old man when they came out. They're so good for any age, honestly. Ten times, eh? I gotta revisit these Harry Potter books. I know my older two kids have read them. I love them. Ten times. Now you list, this is Alexandra's favorite artists,
Starting point is 00:18:21 and there's three artists here, and we're not going to say which one because we don't want to spoil it, but only one of these three artists here and we're not going to say which one because we don't want to spoil it but only one of these three artists appears in your 10. Really?
Starting point is 00:18:30 So let me name the three artists. Okay. And don't tell the people. I won't. They're going to have to guess and we're going to play it later. Mumford and Sons,
Starting point is 00:18:37 The Spice Girls, and Ed Sheeran. Uh-huh. So only one of those three makes your top 10. Okay. Only one of those three are right, so. Very interesting.
Starting point is 00:18:50 We got to check the sources on this Next Step Wiki. And then the final fun fact from the Next Step Wiki is that, and I don't understand this at all, so you're going to have to help me. Okay. Alex's favorite couple is West Millie? What the hell is that mean? West Millie. It's a couple on The Next Step. So West and Emily.
Starting point is 00:19:08 That's true. That's true. Okay. Is this West is a dude that your character is dating on the show? Yeah. Is West the first name or the last name? West is the first name. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Okay. I've never heard West is the first name. All right. So is that one of those um on again off again soap opera type it was on and then it was off and that's it there was one on one off and people really are supposed to call you guys west that's like a a name that like yeah exactly exactly like benifer that might be the first time i heard that was it uh or bradgelina but benifer was might be the first time I heard that. Was it, uh, or Bradgelina?
Starting point is 00:19:45 Yeah. But Bennifer was, might be the first time I ever heard that. And now it's commonplace. And, uh, Tomcat, was it?
Starting point is 00:19:52 Yeah. And, uh, now there's, uh, Westmiley. Westmiley. I realize now it's like Emily.
Starting point is 00:19:59 I didn't know it for that. It was like Westmiley or whatever. No. Okay. Now, before we kick out the jams, I thought about like having a last name like Beaton. Because Beaton's a cool last name.
Starting point is 00:20:08 You think so? Because it's got Beat in there. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, sure. Because you know how people say like, you say it quickly, you're beating me up or whatever. Right. And then I thought about like, there's that line in a great, I'm going to play a bit of
Starting point is 00:20:22 this while I talk about it. Hold on here. Take that down a bit. This is not one of her jams, by the way, people. This is one of my jams. Okay, I love this jam. So this is The White Stripes. Fell in Love with a Girl, and here it's coming in a second.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Let's listen to the lyric here. Heart Still Beaten. Yeah. So this could be like your theme song. Oh, could it? When you enter a room. This is what I want to play. And you could do far worse. This is a tremendous song.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Yeah, this is an amazing song. Maybe this song will appear in your mom's jam list when she comes home. We'll see. All right. Then I thought about it. Then I got off into a rabbit hole, if you will. And then I'm like, oh, there's other good beat songs. And then I'm like, oh, of course, there's this one. Bring this out.
Starting point is 00:21:23 The Go-Go's. Where they went to go to rock it in time. They got the beat. They got the beat. They got the beat. Yeah, they got the beat. And Beaton's your real name. This is not some... No, no, it's my... Clearly, because you don't seem to love it the way I do.
Starting point is 00:21:57 No, I mean... So you didn't choose it. I've never... Well, no, it was given to me when I was born by my father. Your father's a Beaton. Yes, John Beaton. Yeah, I don't know. I've never thought of it as a really cool last name, to be honest. I always
Starting point is 00:22:09 thought like Star or Moon or something like that was such a cool last name, not Beaton. I think it'd be like take off the Beaton path. I don't know. You're making me feel better about it. I instantly liked it. Is your dad in the business?
Starting point is 00:22:25 No. Or is he a regular guy? He's a regular dude. He hooked up with Kate Wheeler. He did. He's just a regular dude. He's a very cool regular dude. I'll give him that. He's going to have to be pretty freaking cool because...
Starting point is 00:22:36 Anyways, I've said too much. I've said too much. One more I'm going to play because it's from my buddy Custom, who many people know from his big hit, Hey Mister. But let this brew in the background a bit. But this was from his, I think it's the only album he ever put out officially. It's called Fast. And he came up recently because
Starting point is 00:22:54 we just had the anniversary of Michael Hutchence's death because Michael Hutchence was lead singer of In Excess and he passed away far too young from asphyxiation. We're not sure if it was suicide or not. There's a whole thing on that. It's Beat Me, which is a great track. I don't know if it aged well.
Starting point is 00:23:36 But it's nice, yeah. Another candidate when you're looking for your theme song. So to wrap up that initial thought there is that he was he directed a movie that never saw light a day it's called limp it got held up in some court stuff and never saw the light of day but Michael Hutchins starred in it it was called limp custom whose real name is Dwayne the volt he directed it I had a lengthy discussion this is going back now like 12 years I had a lengthy discussion with custom about working with Michael Hutchence at the time this is like 97 I want to say whatever so I shared that interview yesterday and then that put custom in my mind and then I listened
Starting point is 00:24:16 to fast because I really like fast and then I heard beat me and then I thought of you and here we are full circle see how it works? Yeah. Where do you go from here? Like you're in a couple of series or auditioning for other roles but what's the goal here? To win an Oscar? I mean that would be great. But critical success has never been something that drives
Starting point is 00:24:38 me. I mean it's awesome if it comes with what you do but just the fact that I honestly do love to act and that's what I would love to be able to do with my life is kind of the next step. Did your PR representative write that? Cause that's like such a, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:24:55 That's just my, my, what do you look like? Can I tell you who I think you might look a bit like? Taylor Swift a bit. Is it the glasses? I think it might be the glasses. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:02 What do I know? I've never, I've never heard that before ever. Well, it was the first time for everything. And besides, what do I know? I've never heard that before, ever. Well, it's the first time for everything. And besides, what do I know? Taylor Swift. But I was thinking like movies or TV, like you have a preference? No, not really.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Just good roles. Good roles. It's a preference. And are there good roles? Yeah, there tends to be, especially now that as a female, you get written as a full character, which is kind of nice instead of just somebody's wife or girlfriend or daughter. And there's more of that now. Yep.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Big Little Lies is a perfect example of a great show. That was really good. That was a great show. I really enjoyed that. Yeah. And somebody, when they kicked out the jam, somebody, I believe it was Lowest of the Low, Lawrence from Lowest of the Low, I believe, Lawrence Nichols,
Starting point is 00:25:46 who, the theme song from that series was one of his 10 jams. Oh, no way! Yep. And then every time I, because I watch that series, and I'm like, where do I know this song from? It's like, it's from, what's the series called? Big Little Lies? I always want to call it, what's that show my daughter watches, Little Liars? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Oh, um, Pretty. Pretty Little Liars. Yeah, I don't watch that. I get those titles mixed up. They're not at all the same. No. But when I watched the, I don't know if I was watching
Starting point is 00:26:12 the Golden Globes or the Emmys, but this song got played, not this song, but the theme song there got played a lot during that. And every time I heard it, I was thinking of the jam kicking by Lois de la Loz.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Cool. All right. We're almost ready to kick out the jams but I want to tell people listening if they want to help crowd fund Toronto mic'd so we can have interesting conversations and I'm glad I got you now on your way up right because very for all I know you could break and a year from now you could be way out of reach that's just that's the dream. No offense. Your dream is to say no to the podcaster. That's what I want in life. So I got you now.
Starting point is 00:26:50 And then when you do break, and everyone's talking about Alexandra Beaton, the Toronto Act, Sarah Pauly, the new Sarah Pauly, whatever. I can say, you know, she was on my podcast. And I can make some noise about it. So I'm glad I got you. But if people want to help crowdfund this, let's go to, let's all go to patreon.com slash Toronto Mike and give what you can. You can even give a dollar a month or you could do $10 a month, whatever you can afford
Starting point is 00:27:19 and help keep this going. I'm glad, Alexandra, that you are over the age of 19. Yes. I was thinking, what would I do? Like, if you came in here and you were 18, I could not responsibly give you this six pack of beer. No, you couldn't.
Starting point is 00:27:32 It's probably a crime. I think it might be. I mean, you could give it to me for my parents if I was under the age of... I'd have to be very clear. Yeah. You are to deliver this...
Starting point is 00:27:41 But this is for me. This is for you? Yeah, thank you. Okay, yes, of course. Great Lakes Brewery. Right. Now now that's from great lakes brewery enjoy it responsibly i will they have a an event i think the kingsway theater where they play i think there's a uh i want to get i should have got these facts prepared ahead of time your mom mom and Christine Bentley don't make this mistake on their podcast. My mom never makes mistakes.
Starting point is 00:28:09 No, she would have been prepared. But there is some kind of a film festival for Great Lakes celebrating 30 years. They made some kind of a little film and they're going to play it at Kingsway. And if you buy a ticket, you get a certain number of beverages. And I'm going to this it's in my calendar and i'm going to have more details for the next episode uh but people should come out especially west end people yeah whereabouts do you live approximately in this big city i live in toronto but like i mean you can make which quadrant north side of it so you're in the north
Starting point is 00:28:43 yes east or west or central? Central. Central. Okay. So that's actually, I think that's the prime, a prime location that my, my buddy Brian Gerstein looks after. So Brian Gerstein, he is a sales representative with PSR Brokerage. I believe he lives in, I want to say Thornhill, which is not Toronto at all, but definitely takes care of GTA listings and a lot of North York stuff and everything. And Brian has a
Starting point is 00:29:11 message. So let's hear this straight from Brian's mouth. Here's Brian. Property in the six dot com. Brian Gerstein here, sales representative with PSR Brokerage. With the country's bank regulator tightening the mortgage rules effective January 1st for all lenders, this will have a huge impact as it will affect those buyers with a down payment of 20% or more who were previously exempt. In January, expect your affordability to also drop by 20%. You can call me at 416-873-0292 for more information on the changes, as I fully expect a rush of buyers to purchase before you're in. I can also refer you to our in-house mortgage broker
Starting point is 00:30:01 team who can qualify you so you know how much purchasing power you have now and what the number will be in 2018. Now that's a more generic message from Brian, but the last episode with David Schultz, he writes for the Globe and Mail and he's a sports journalist. And Brian recorded a specific message for David. He's a big fan of David's and it's very, very specific message for David. Oh. He's a big fan of David's and it's very, very specific to that episode. So, you know, I can't play for this episode. I can't play for this episode. I'm not a sports writer. Brian did not record a specific message for Alexander Beaton.
Starting point is 00:30:37 Offended. And when you win that Oscar. I'm going to shout it and be like, no thanks to Brian. Property in the six, you're going to say, property in the six, screw you. Look at me now. That pint glass. Right.
Starting point is 00:30:51 That is a gift from Brian. So he didn't record a personal message, but he did. I'm feeling better about Brian. He bought you a property in the six. And he's got a daughter
Starting point is 00:31:01 who is in that prime, what's the name of that show i gotta know the next step the next step in the prime the next step demo right so maybe brian for all he knows it's like it's been around him he just didn't realize that that that emily person is you so his mistake but he to just uh people listening just to share something about the david schultz episode so david schultz comes in and we do like 45 minutes about canada sports media stuff okay so this is like a deep dive and it's really interesting if you care at all about canada sports media and of course you do of course i do you're probably a big
Starting point is 00:31:36 jay and dan fan yes whoever they are yeah okay and then we kick out the jams and david is a super like blues guy and he's educated me on blue stuff i didn't know anything about like these these old time southern like guitar guys that you don't know the name yeah but they're like legends he's got this great detail and it's like i was like blown away by this education and then david plays his last jam and i swear to you i don't think this will happen in this episode, but I'm sitting here, I'm listening to it. I know,
Starting point is 00:32:08 I know David's story that he's never put in public before. So I know this story as I'm, and I'm listening to this jam and I start, I'm sitting here, I'm crying. Like I'm here, I'm starting to cry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Okay. And David, who is making eye contact like we are right now, the whole episode, the eye contact has now gone away. He's no longer making eye contact. And I'm listening to these words in this song, and it's so specific to David's situation that he has lived through that I know what's coming, and I'm now starting to cry.
Starting point is 00:32:42 So we play the jam, and then David tells us why he chose that song and what it means to him. And the way he articulates this, uh, it's the most heartbreaking moment. I think it might be the most heartbreaking moment in the history of this podcast. David's now crying. We're not making eye contact, I think, because, uh, maybe, I don't know why guys don't make eye contact when they cry. Like, I think, because maybe, I don't know why guys don't. Make eye contact when they cry. Like, I think maybe there's some thing there that we need to overcome. But his story, and that's why some people might look at this and say, oh, two hours.
Starting point is 00:33:15 I got 45 minutes of sports media. Like, I don't care about sports. I don't care about sports media. If you do nothing else, download that episode with David Schultz. And I don't care if you skip ahead to the last, I don't know, the last five minutes or whatever. Get that last, listen to the last jam and then listen to David Schultz talking about why that song matters to him. I did it 10 times. 10 times I went to that last five minutes and listened.
Starting point is 00:33:42 And each time it, like I I completely just felt it, man. Yeah. So I just want, if anyone's skipping it because it's two hours and they don't want to hear about the blues or they don't want to hear about sports media, just go listen to the last five minutes. Do it. Just do it.
Starting point is 00:34:00 Do it. I think that's what custom does in Beat Me. Oh! Do it. I think that's what he does off the top. All it. I think that's what he does off the top. All right. I'm one more mention and then we're kicking out the jams. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:34:10 We're just building some anticipation here. PayTM. TM does not stand for Toronto Mic'd. I know you think it does. It doesn't. It should. PayTM is an app designed to manage all of your bills in one spot. You don't have to visit each separate website to make a payment.
Starting point is 00:34:28 All of your bills are on the Paytm app. And the best part is that Paytm pays you to pay your bills. You get 3% cash back on everyday goods like coffee at Tim Hortons and gas at Esso. So visit Paytm.ca and download the Paytm app for free on your smartphone. What kind of phone do you have? I have an iPhone. My daughter has an iPhone. Great phone.
Starting point is 00:34:57 I'm so against these iPhones. Really? I love them. I can tell you I have no influence over my teenagers because I said to them both, get an Android phone. Here's why both went Apple. Yep.
Starting point is 00:35:10 Uh, anyway, promo code Toronto, Mike, remember that promo code Toronto, Mike gets you $10 off your first bill payment with the pay TM app. That's free money. So if you want 10 bucks from pay TM,
Starting point is 00:35:24 because you listen to this show, Toronto Mike is the promo code you need to remember. Alexandra Beedon? Yes? Are you ready to kick out the jams? I am ready to kick out the jams. On your side of the bed, there's a picture of our wedding day a clock that don't work in the Bible that your daddy
Starting point is 00:36:09 gave it's on the window side where the moon creeps in at night staring at the ceiling, lying here all alone I said a prayer for you, then I said one of my own But you don't reach for me when you lie down quietly Tell me how, how'd you get so far away? All we have left are the memories of the love we made. Are you sleeping with your own regret on your side of the bed? Little Big Town. Yeah. Your side of the bed. Little Big Town. Yeah. Your side of the bed.
Starting point is 00:37:08 By the way, if you want to sing along. Oh, no, no one wants me. Sarah Boesveld sang along to her jams, and it was a nice element. I don't think anybody wants me to sing along. Tell me why you chose this jam. This song, when I first heard it, it just spoke to me in so many different ways. It's about so many things, about being lonely, falling out of love with someone, about just based human emotions.
Starting point is 00:37:35 And ever since I first heard it, I am obsessed with it. I listen to it probably eight or nine times a week. It's also a beautiful song, Little Big Town. It's one of my favorite groups. This is a country. It is. Yeah, there are more countries. When I turn the lights down Your side of the bed Are you lonely? Like I'm lonely
Starting point is 00:38:13 How can you get so far away? It's funny how some songs just strike you. Yeah. All the memories of the lonely days And then whenever they trigger in you, you want to feel that again. how some songs just strike you. Yeah. And then whenever they trigger in you, you want to feel that again. And the way to trigger them back is to listen to the song again. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:32 It's a really beautiful song. A bit of an oxymoron. It's a little big town. Come on. Is it little or is it big? Who knows? It's like a jumbo shrimp. That's exactly right.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Are you still awake on your side of the bed? Nice. Beautiful song. Beautiful song. Beautiful song. Are you ready for your second jam? I am. My lover's got humor She's a giggle at her funeral Knows everybody's disapproval
Starting point is 00:39:37 I should have worshipped her sooner If the heavens ever did speak She's the last true mouthpiece. Every Sunday's getting more bleak, a fresh poison each week. We were born sick, you heard them say it. My church offers no absolutes, she tells me worship in the bedroom. The only heaven I'll be sent to is when I'm alone with you I was born sick but I love you command me to be well amen amen amen Amen. Amen.
Starting point is 00:40:26 Take me to church. I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your life. I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. Offer me that deathless death. Oh, good God, let me give you my life. Take me to church. I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your life I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death, oh good God, let me give you my life
Starting point is 00:40:54 Take me to church, Hosier? Hosier. Hosier, how do you say that? I think Hosier, I think Hosier, I don't know. I've heard it pronounced so many different ways. Tell me why you chose Take Me to Church. Well, I love anything by him in the first place. This is actually the first song I ever heard of his, which introduced me to his whole album, which is amazing. But I mean, you just have to listen to the song and you can love it.
Starting point is 00:41:22 The beat is amazing. The lyrics are amazing. It's saying so much while saying so little. Is there a homosexuality theme here? For example, with the lyrics about... Maybe I picked that up from the video or whatnot, but it seemed almost like... Let me listen to the words here I thought possibly there was
Starting point is 00:42:00 like a gay rights theme in here. That would be amazing if there was I never picked that up when I was listening to the song, but I wouldn't put it past him. When I first heard this jam on, I think Indie88 played it. Yeah. And I heard it, and it was like a new jam. Instantly, I liked it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:21 It's just one of those. And I knew it was destined for big things. Also his voice. His voice is just... Amen. Amen. Take me to church. I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your life. I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. Offer me that deathless death, oh good God, let me give you my life. Take me to church. I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your life. I'll tell you my sins and you not to sing along.
Starting point is 00:43:20 Because that's one of those jams when you hear that in the car or whatever. It's a full performance in my car when it comes on. It's a sing-along because that's one of those jams when you hear that in the car or whatever it's a full performance in my car when it comes on it's a sing-along yeah and it's one of those songs where you don't feel silly because it's easy to know what they're saying like sometimes there's songs where you're singing along and you realize you don't have the lyrics quite right yeah that happens to me quite a lot but this one you can be it's pretty clear he enunciates properly for us so awesome take me to church yes and here is, that was a recent song, but we have a throwback now. We do.
Starting point is 00:43:49 I think if I'm remembering correctly. Your third jam. Yeah Woo! Yeah Uh-huh Ooh yeah Uh-huh Yeah It won't end The clock strikes upon the hour and the sun begins to fade
Starting point is 00:44:31 Still enough time to figure out how to chase my blues away I'm gonna light up till now It's the light of day that shows me how And when the night falls The loneliness falls Oh, I wanna dance with somebody I wanna feel the heat with somebody Yeah, I the heat with somebody. Yeah, I want to dance with somebody.
Starting point is 00:45:07 With somebody who loves me. Oh, I want to dance with somebody. I want to feel the heat with somebody. Yeah, I want to dance with somebody. With somebody who loves me. I want to dance with somebody Whitney Houston. Yeah, it's such a fun song. Because you're a competitive dancer, was this a song you would dance to? No, I never danced to this song, but I heard it when I was obviously pretty young and it just stuck with me.
Starting point is 00:45:45 It's always been on my recently played on my iPod. Like I, I don't know. It just, every time I'm in my car or if I'm working out, especially like this song is my go-to. Now here's what blows me away. This is the second time in the long history of Kick Out the Jams episodes. It's only about 20-something episodes. But the second time that a Whitney Houston jam has been played. Really? But here's what gets me.
Starting point is 00:46:13 It's the same song. It's the same song. But I lived throughout her entire career, and this was a big hit, but there are lots of bigger, maybe, or just as big of hits. It's amazing to me that this is the jam that seems to resonate. I think it's just sometimes music, especially it makes us feel certain things. Sadness is a big one or just lonely things like that. But this one is just it makes you feel happy.
Starting point is 00:46:38 It is a very happy jam. It is. Sadly, Whitney is no longer with us. I know. It's very hot. Let me ask you your thoughts on something here. I watched
Starting point is 00:47:03 parts of this American Music Awards. Okay. Which I believe was like this maybe two weekends ago. You know, it's all a blur. Was it this past weekend? I don't know. Okay. There was this American Music Awards.
Starting point is 00:47:16 Right. And Christina Aguilera did a tribute to Whitney Houston. Oh, wow. Okay. Maybe the Bodyguard songs. Right. The Bodyguard songs. Whatever. So Christina Aguilera does this tribute to Whitney Houston. Sings wow. Okay. Maybe the Bodyguard songs. Right. The Bodyguard songs, whatever.
Starting point is 00:47:26 So Christina Aguilera does this tribute to Whitney Houston, sings I Will Always Love You, her style and everything. Okay. Fine. I mean,
Starting point is 00:47:32 she did a good job, I thought, whatever. Then I read on social media that some people thought maybe that the tribute should not have come from Christina,
Starting point is 00:47:41 but maybe from a black woman. Right. Do you have any thoughts on this? I mean, I'm torn. I totally get what the people on social media would be saying. Somebody that represents her culture and everything that she did as a strong black woman, what she brought to music.
Starting point is 00:47:58 But then also Christina Aguilera has an amazing voice and maybe she took something away from Whitney Houston that impacted her in an amazing way just like Whitney Houston impacted a lot of people regardless of their race religion sexual orientation um so you can I think you can look at it both ways and try and be as understanding as you can be call me simple or naive or whatnot but I don't see the problem I mean if you're inspired by somebody does it matter that you're from a different background like I don't know why I don't I don't necessarily think so at all I think everybody should be inspired by everybody um right when
Starting point is 00:48:34 I play shortstop and I channel my inner Tony Fernandez I can do that despite the fact I am not of Dominican descent right right I think probably what the people on social media were saying, and obviously I'm speaking as a white woman, was just that somebody of the same background as her maybe could have brought in a little more soul to it.
Starting point is 00:48:57 Though I'm sure Christina Aguilera did an amazing job. The pendulum might have swung too far in our attempt to correct years of oppression. This is my thoughts. I believe the pendulum
Starting point is 00:49:08 maybe there's an overcorrection at play. That there's controversy because Christina Aguilera performed Whitney Houston songs. I think between we should need one more person of color here to have this conversation with us we can't just have it as two white people
Starting point is 00:49:24 sitting here talking about it. Yeah, we still did it. We need a different opinion. Let's kick out another jam, shall we? Yeah. This is such an amazing song. Cause she's all you'd ever want She's the kind that likes to float
Starting point is 00:49:52 And take the dinner Take the dinner Well, she always knows her place She's got style, she's got grace She's a winner She's a winner She's a lady Oh, she's a lady, oh, she's a lady Talking about that little lady, and the lady is mine
Starting point is 00:50:17 Well, she's never in the way, always something nice to say What a blessing, what a blessing. I can leave her on her own, knowing she's okay alone. That's no messing, no messing. She's a lady, oh, she's a lady. Talking about the little lady. And the lady is mine She's a lady, and this is performed by Lion Babe. Yeah, so hilariously, I actually first heard this song in an H&M commercial,
Starting point is 00:50:57 and I knew right away that I needed to have it on my iPod. And so, thankfully to Google, I Googled song in H&M commercial cover and it found it for me. It is a bit obscure because when you send me your list, I go source them out. And this one is a bit obscure, this cover. It is, yeah. But Lion Babe in general has some amazing stuff.
Starting point is 00:51:19 So you guys should check them out. Have you heard the original? Yes. It's a little different. Yeah. Well, it's a totally different thought process on the song. Like in this one, it's all about how she's empowered and how she, especially if you see the commercial, how it's like a woman empowered.
Starting point is 00:51:36 And then in the original, it's more like, oh, she's my lady. Where this one is like, no, I'm my own lady. Right, right. And that's okay, right? I'm just keeping lady right right and that's okay right i'm just keeping track of what appropriation is okay well yeah any anyone belonging to themselves is good and uh and my last note on this is uh when chris cornell does an amazing uh the late great chris cornell does an amazing cover of uh michael jackson right that's is that okay that he's paying tribute to a great song by a black artist paying tribute to a great song
Starting point is 00:52:05 by a black artist? Paying tribute to anyone is a beautiful thing. So Christina's okay to do something In my opinion, Christina's okay, but I'm not gonna bash
Starting point is 00:52:12 anyone's opinion on the controversy. Very good. Now, ready for your next jam? Yeah. This is a good song. I'm Texas forever like Bombay and I'm Rambo in the old. I'm Billy and Rick like John Jack. I'm Camo in the old.
Starting point is 00:52:47 These thoughts can't clock me nowadays. You wish I was your pound cake. Boy, you know I look good at four. Wish I was your baby mama. Want me to come around and give you good karma. But no, we escalating up in this bitch like elevators. Of course, sometimes shit go down when it's a billion dollars on the elevator. Okay, so I always play the song and then I fade down kind of after the chorus. You can't fade down. There's no fade there. You just gotta, you're there for the

Am I right? Yeah. I love it. It's such a, yeah, it's such an amazing song. Is that like your, who's here? Brad Faye had the,
Starting point is 00:56:42 Brad Faye was in recently and he played Lose Yourself by Eminem. That's like a hype song. This is your song i do love lose yourself by eminem as well but yet this is definitely my hype song because i'm hyped right now we have to stop right now i gotta go for a ride holy smokes so that's queen bae can i call her the queen yeah well she is and nikki minaj yep also another queen some salty language in there but that's okay you're old enough for some salty language that's flawless to drink you're old enough for some salty language in there but that's okay you're old enough for some salty language that's flawless to drink you're old enough for some salty language whoa that's good now i can uh my heart's gonna come down but it can't come down yet i realize the next jam this are you sure this isn't your dad's jam no this is yours okay let's kick out another jam Another jam. This could take all night Think I need a devil to help me get things right
Starting point is 00:57:47 Hook me up a new revolution This one is a lie Sat around laughing to watch the last one die Now I'm looking to the sky to save me looking for
Starting point is 00:58:08 a sign of life looking for something to help me find out
Starting point is 00:58:14 right I'm looking for a complication looking cause I'm tired of life
Starting point is 00:58:24 make my way back home and learn to fight The Foo Fighters. Yeah. Learn to fly. I'm a huge Foo Fighters fan. In general, I love Dave Grohl. Have you ever seen the Foo Fighters live? No, I never have. It's not too late.
Starting point is 00:58:44 They're coming soon. Really? Like, maybe not soon, but the tickets went on sale very recently. Oh, okay. I'll have to look into that. Maybe soon. I think December, maybe? Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:58:53 Huh. But tell me why this jam, though, because the Foo Fighters have a pretty big catalog of big hits. They do. Honestly, another song that just speaks to me. Because you want to be a pilot yes yes um that is the actual dream no it's just you know learning about second chances and i think especially if you know anything about dave grohl i mean hook me up a new revolution this one is a lie i sat around waiting and watched the last one die. I mean there's so many
Starting point is 00:59:31 Interesting things you can take away from it. The beats amazing. You can never fault Taylor Hawkins ever But yeah, I just you wear a dress in this video or is that a I confusing my videos I think you're confusing your videos, but I'm not a hundred percent sure They do what he wears a dress in quite a few of their videos I noticed that yeah that there's that Nothing wrong with that at all I love this song All about learning to pick yourself back up again So you're picking the Foo Fighters And that got me thinking of the last
Starting point is 00:59:56 Jam kicker to play the Foo Fighters Who was Bob Willett And chose Everlong Which is my favorite Foo Fighters song as well. And Bob, I was with Bob on Sunday because we were at the Argos game together. And that made me think, okay, I have a 22-year-old young woman here with me.
Starting point is 01:00:17 Do you even know the Argos exist? I do, yeah. I know they exist. I don't follow them. Is there any sports team you follow? The Leafs and the Raptors. Pretty basic like that. There's nothing wrong with that. I was just curious whether you were watching TFC last night. No.
Starting point is 01:00:38 So the Argos fans will be glad to hear you don't like TFC either. Right. That's how that'll work. Did you know Dave Grohl was in another band before? I just effed with you. That very small band, might have heard of them. If my 13-year-old gets hit with that fun fact one more time, I think she's going to slug me. Let's kick out another jam. So tired trying to see from behind the red in my eyes
Starting point is 01:01:52 No better version of me I could pretend to be tonight So deep in the swill with the most familiar swine For reasons wretched and divine She blows out of nowhere a Roman candle of the wild Laughing away through my feeble disguise Oh, what aversion to me I would rather be tonight Lord, she found me just in time Cause with my menial crisis all said and done
Starting point is 01:02:35 I need to be youthfully felt Cause, God, I never felt young She's gonna save me, call me baby From her hands to my head She'll know me crazy, soothe me daily But yet she wouldn't care We'll steal her exes, be detectives Ride around picking up clues
Starting point is 01:03:00 We'll name our children Jackie and Wilson Raise them on rhythm and blues That's Hosier or Hosier, depending on your preference, and Jackie and Wilson. Yeah. Tell me why you dig this jam. Oh, just about being in love with someone that's like you, you know? Opposites don't necessarily attract. And it's just about that. I think to me, it just beats that like fun stage of falling in love with someone where everything's fun
Starting point is 01:03:31 and that person's so interesting and you're learning about them. Did we learn nothing though from Seinfeld when Jerry fell in love with Janine Garofalo who was so much like him. I know. There needs to be some difference. Yes, he realized,
Starting point is 01:03:46 I hate myself. I can't date myself. You're the worst. So. Yeah. Now, of course, this song's called Jackie and Wilson, but there is a Jackie Wilson.
Starting point is 01:03:56 Yeah. So is this, that can't be a coincidence? No, but in the lyrics he goes, we'll name our children Jackie and Wilson, which I'm sure is a reference too. For sure, for sure. You must really like this album, right?
Starting point is 01:04:18 I love this album. Both of your jams are on the same album. Yeah. Can I ask you, he's not American, is he? Is he Irish or something? I think so, but I'm not 100% about that. Alexandra, you've got to do some homework. I know.
Starting point is 01:04:31 I just like his music. digging up the art for what's left of me and our little vignette. But whatever poor soul is coming next, she's gonna save me, call me baby, from her head to my head. She'll know me crazy, sue me daily, but yet she wouldn't care. We'll steal her Lexus, be detective, ride around picking up clues. We'll name
Starting point is 01:05:08 our children Jackie and Wilson, raise them on rhythm and blues. Now that I listened to the lyrics, yes, of course. Yes. We'll name our children Jackie and Wilson. That's an homage to Jackie Wilson. Yes. Let's kick out another jam. This is
Starting point is 01:05:24 another little Big Town. Little Big Town. I'm probably better off on my own Than loving a man who Didn't know what he had when he had it And I see The permanent damage you did to me Never again I just wish I could forget When it was magic
Starting point is 01:06:02 I wish it wasn't for him. Standing in the mirror saying to myself, you know you had to do it, I know. The bravest thing I ever did was run. Sometimes in the middle of my hand. And I'll just miss you and I'll just wish you were a better man. A better man. So yes, that is a little big town with Better Man. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:51 Yeah. It's a beautiful song. I actually, when I was filming Spiral last year, we had a really long day ahead of us. So we were just listening to songs we like in the makeup room. And I put this song on and everyone started to cry. It's just one of those songs that I think everybody really can relate to. You know, liking someone, loving someone, or even just caring about someone who isn't good for you. And you just wish they were a better man.
Starting point is 01:07:17 Or a better woman or a better person. And it's just... When I saw your list come through email and I saw you had Better Man, I got really excited for a moment. Why? Because there's a fantastic Pearl Jam song called Better Man.
Starting point is 01:07:35 Interesting. I didn't know that. And then I read further and it said Little Big Town and I said that's a funny way to spell Pearl Jam. Do you have any personal, maybe it's too personal a question,
Starting point is 01:07:55 but do you have any experience with dating somebody that you wish was better? I do. I do. I'm sure that's why
Starting point is 01:08:01 I love this song so much. my best and we both know you can't say that you know people will give you advice that uh a leopard doesn't change their spots that's what they're gonna say to you i'm here to just tell you that uh i wish every day men throughout the world there are forget men leopards throughout the world are changing their spots every day okay i'm just to putting it out there, putting that out there that that's a bit of a simple BS. Some guys won't change and some guys will evolve and better. So just saying,
Starting point is 01:08:58 as the kids would say. now your your homework when you leave me today yes is to find pearl pearl jams better man okay give it a spin because i actually think you'll like it. Okay. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous song. We're about to play your ninth jam, a jam that my daughter plays all the time, and I know it quite well. Let's hear it. Drake. Oh, man.
Starting point is 01:09:55 Yeah. You my right hand. You my go-to. Told me everything about you you That's a bold move I know that you're out here And there's things you gotta go through Just know that these streets just don't love you like I do And they never will
Starting point is 01:10:18 But I swear you gotta chill You wanna grip a band's will And I know you can't wait You dream big and sleep late You got a lot on your plate That's why you're always working We'll be right back. Drake. Yes. Right hand. Yes. Tell me why this Drake jam.
Starting point is 01:11:03 Well, first of all, I don't think you can have grown up in Toronto and not have at least one Drake song in your top ten. I know you can kind of divide some people, but I absolutely love him and I love his music. Right Hand, I don't know. It's new Drake and old Drake combined into one, I personally think. I love the beat. I love the lyrics. This is not on an album, right?
Starting point is 01:11:27 Is Right Hand on an album? No, I think it's a single. I think it's one of his artists. Drake likes to drop songs that don't necessarily belong to an album. He dropped a whole EP that just wasn't even necessarily an album.
Starting point is 01:11:43 Yeah, I love this song. You have a lot in common with Drake because Drake, of course, starred on Degrassi, a Toronto film show popular with young people, and you star in The Next Step. I will also be starting a rapping career. I'm kidding. I'm not. I'm not. No one wants that.
Starting point is 01:12:02 You could be the next Nicki Minaj. No, i can't actually what's the australian's name the blonde oh iggy right yeah i wouldn't necessarily compare her and nikki minaj though no but uh you have australian roots i do so i'm working with what you got come on was it difficult to choose which drake track you were gonna bring this one is for me is always being above and beyond it's always on my recently played so i kind of knew going into it but i love a lot of his stuff
Starting point is 01:12:36 i really like drake as well that's's a fake finish by Drake right there. Just to psych me out. Keep you on your toes. Oh, he did it again. Yeah. Now this next jam, your final jam, is the answer to the fun trivia question off the top, which is of these three artists on the wiki page for the next step.
Starting point is 01:13:04 Only one will appear in your jam list and it is this one right here. Are you ready for your final jam? I am ready. I am ready. Yeah! I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want Now tell me what you want, what you really, really want I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna I wanna really, really, really wanna Zig a zig a
Starting point is 01:13:28 If you want my future, forget my past If you wanna get with me, better make it fast Now don't go wasting my precious time Get your act together, We could be just fine I'll tell you what I want What I really, really want So tell me what you want What you really, really want
Starting point is 01:13:50 I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna I wanna really, really, really wanna Say, can I say, can I? If you wanna be my lover You gotta get with my friends Make it last forever Friendship never ends If you wanna be my lover You have got to give. Taking is too easy,
Starting point is 01:14:09 but that's the way it is. What you think about that? Wannabe, the Spice Girls. Yep, the Spice Girls. Girl power, right? Always girl power. Who's your favorite Spice Girl? It's a tie between Baby Spice and Posh Spice. I always felt Baby was the weakest singer on the Spice Girls. Oh, well, that might be. Maybe, maybe. And I always thought the strongest singer was Sporty Spice. No, or Mel B. Mel B can carry a track, too.
Starting point is 01:14:39 That's true. That was quite the phenomenon when the Spice Girls invaded North America. Yeah, yeah. And this was the first jam most people heard. I still remember watching Spice World, the movie. There's therapy for that. Is there? Yeah. You get a discount.
Starting point is 01:15:05 You can have those, you get a discount. You can, uh, have those memories erased. Oh, if you, uh, no, I like them.
Starting point is 01:15:10 I know. I'm just goofing on you. If you want to be my lover, you gotta get with my friends. Make it last forever. Friendship never ends. If you want to be my lover, you have got to give
Starting point is 01:15:26 Taking is too easy But that's the way it is If you wanna be my lover You gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta Make your last words clear, boy Slap your body down and whine, it's all around Slap your body down and whine, it's all around Ha, ha, ha, ha
Starting point is 01:15:43 Slap your body down and whine, it's all around Slap your body down and zig-a-zig-a Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is a pop song. Holy smokes. That is a pop song, yeah, for sure. Another sing-along. You have to sing that one. Yeah, you do. So you don't really like Ed Sheeran and... I don't.
Starting point is 01:16:04 I don't not like Ed Sheeran and Mumford & Sons. They're just not on my top ten. No banjos in any of your songs today. No banjos in any of my songs. That is a very interesting observation. But we did get two country tracks because you did Two Little Big Town. Yes.
Starting point is 01:16:17 And as we mentioned, that's sort of country. That is sort of country. Like they're not playing that on Virgin Radio or... No. The Kiss. Kiss FM? I'm trying to remember our pop station 92.5 did you listen to any radio no i have an aux cord remind me what an aux cord is you can plug it into your car and then you're done onto your phone aux i was thinking uh this is some ox i was like yeah aux okay auxiliary cord okay yeah i mean my uh son, who is almost 16, never touches the radio. Like, this radio is a completely foreign entity to him.
Starting point is 01:16:52 Thank you for doing this. Oh, thank you for having me. And should I have recorded this? Because I didn't. I just wanted to hear these jams with you. Yeah, I know. We should have recorded it. Can we do it again?
Starting point is 01:17:01 Yeah, let's do it again. And that brings us to the end of our 285th show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Alexandra is, and this is complicated, pay attention. I am A.L. Beaton. B-E-A-T-O-N.
Starting point is 01:17:20 Is L like your middle name? Yeah. See, I'm clever. I figured that out. So I am A. Beaton was taken? Well, A.L. I figured that out. So I am Abeaten was taken? Well, A... Oh, you wanted L in there. ALbeaten is my Instagram handle.
Starting point is 01:17:30 It's all making sense to me now. Mm-hmm. Is that where people should follow you? Yes. Because you don't tweet very much, right? I'm not a big tweeter. I can't spell and my grammar is awful, so it's very stressful for me. So your Instagram handle is ALbeaten?
Starting point is 01:17:43 Yeah. Are you going to mention anything on this Instagram that you were on this show? Maybe, yeah. You're going to hear how it sounds? Property in the Sixth is at Brian Gerstein. Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer. And PayTM is at PayTM Canada. See you all next week.
Starting point is 01:18:03 Bye. is at PaytmCanada. See you all next week. Bye!
