Today,
returning to Toronto Mike
for the first time in almost a year
is FOTM
Hall of Famer, Cam
Gordon!
Woo!
Mike, this is my 100th
appearance. This is not.
This is
your 100th. You are sitting at
99 appearances for the past
11 months and here you are to get
that. You're the first
guest ever to
hit triple digits. That's amazing.
I was just letting some people catch up and now
before i blew into three digits there but uh so good to be back that handsome face back where it
belongs in my basement yeah it's not like we haven't seen each other during those months but
it's good to be back in uh what new toronto here i see the byway is still doesn't have the rogue
byway it's still for sale, everybody.
I took a photo.
Maybe I'll put it in an offer.
Maybe Stu Stone and I will... Maybe make that an NFT.
I hear they're so hot right now.
There you go, yeah.
When Stu, you mentioned Stu Stone.
So he made his first appearance in like 10 months last month.
But unlike you, I had not seen Stu
since we did an episode of toast in november that was the
first but you had must have gone to a jay's game or something i feel like you you must have gone
for a beer with him i i saw him was it just before just after i i did uh have dinner with stew and
the pasternak boys who i think have come up they were former uh newton cable co-hosts back in the
early 90s.
But yeah, we had a delicious dinner at the Keg up in Beaver Creek in Richmond Hill.
That was very nice.
Oh, I know it well.
That's Highway 7. And then weirdly, that was like on Thursday.
And then a couple of days later, I was just at a pub in Leslieville watching the Jays game with MF and a couple of friends.
And who should walk by?
Stu Stone, who was there. And get this. He was and a couple of friends and who should walk by Stu Stone who was
there and get this he was
carrying a box of baseball cards
so I was like dude
what are you doing here and he was
meeting these people they knew through like I think
Mike Wilner and they were having some
kind of baseball meetup
and they're just standing and who should walk
in the star
of Kim convenienceience, Paul...
Sun Hyung?
Yeah.
Big Jays fan.
Yeah, he just walks in.
And we all opened up these packs of baseball cards.
We had a great afternoon.
It was the game that Jose Batista, his number, was retired.
Okay, that was a big game.
I was watching that ceremony.
I know you don't care for this year's edition of the Jays.
I still don't like them.
Yeah. I tuned in yesterday. It still don't like them. Yeah.
I tuned in yesterday.
It was 6-0 in the ninth, and I'm like, it looks good on you.
I don't know what to tell you, but sports has to make –
I have to like my teams.
This doesn't mean I won't watch the playoff games.
I was watching – I tune in.
Yeah, sure.
But I don't like this team.
How do you feel about the 2023 Blue Jays?
It's a weird mix.
I mean, I think they're really talented um it's obviously been very inconsistent i think they have a few
personalities on the team that have been challenging the one part that i i'm not alone
but jordan romano worries me i guess it's like a split fingernail now um but i don't know i mean
i'm always gonna be on the bandwagon But yeah, it's a really, really weird year.
Guess what you face in the playoffs?
You face good pitching.
I wouldn't put my last dollar.
I don't have high hopes.
I'll just say this, though.
In the American League, where both the Yankees and the Red Sox are out this year,
this does seem like a golden opportunity, if not for the Jays,
than one of those other teams to really go somewhere.
It's a weird year with a lot of
parity in the AL, although I feel like
the Braves could steamroll.
They're very top-heavy, so we'll see.
That's why Jimmy Carter is
hanging around. He wants to see
how the Braves do.
Alright, so I didn't see Stu
for almost, I guess about 10 months
and then he wandered into my
basement and we had a great chat i guess you heard that uh i did i'm very underrated treadmill stew
i don't know if we've talked about this i see like some extreme stories of stew on the tree
like his fitness journey yeah i thought it was a fantastic episode yeah i i know that that that uh
12 36 and some others were a bit critical just Stu's appearance. No, just 1236.
I don't think anyone else was critical.
I like it. It was a bit more subdued,
a bit less shtick, but
I thought it was great. We talked about
Aunt Sandy who passed away. It was a
great episode. But then since
then, I bump into Stu everywhere.
I've been going to these events
lately, and Stu's always there.
I've had a lot of bump-ins with Stu Stone
in the past few weeks.
I was going to say, if you can just...
There's like the Elon Musk plane tracker.
I feel like the Stu Stone plane tracker
is wherever David Kynes goes.
So I was with David Kynes tonight.
There you go.
Okay.
There you go.
We have a lot of catching up,
but I didn't see Stu tonight,
which is a rarity when you see David and not Stuart.
That analogy just falls apart, but whatever.
Except for tonight, you're absolutely correct.
But okay, I need to catch up with you, Cam Gordon.
I need to find out where you've been, why the absence.
I have so many questions.
Sure.
But first, I just want to tell you that I was granted a like a spot
on the red carpet for this Canada
Rock of Fame it's going on right now
at Massey Hall I know so I just
like for shits and giggles I applied
I said Toronto Mike wants to be on the red
carpet I saw Glass Tiger was going to be
there I saw April
Wine was going to be there Miles Goodwin
FOTM right and
and Alan Frew is an FOTM.
Oh, and Carol Pope was going to be there.
Rough trade. Just smitten
with the FOTMs. All my friends. Lee Aaron, I think,
is performing. Well, yeah. I didn't... Yeah. So, anyway,
I had a recording to do
till 3 p.m. And then I had to pick up the
kids at 5.45. So, it was all very,
very tight. But I'm like, I'm going to bike to
Massey Hall, get my...
I got to find a where to get my press pass
and i'm gonna plant myself on the red carpet and i'm gonna see who's there like for shits and
giggles i did this and i like i saw want me to tell you some of the people i was hanging please
please are you sitting down cam gordon if anyone would be interested in this drivel it would be me
you know all right so in addition to the obvious which is david kines he was there hi david
kines he's everywhere nice guy nice guy andy fucking kim is there okay let's sugar sugar
hanging with any much much music legends uh well carol pope and alan fru were there obviously
did she cream her jeans and then uh i was i got some real quality FaceTime, like a conversation with Monica deal.
Whoa.
Yeah,
I know.
And then the fun,
the thing is we're chatting and she's like,
I was thinking about you because I'm in town for an extended period.
And I know I promised I'd come visit you.
And she's kind of telling me like she wants to do it next time she's in town.
She's going to do it.
She's based in Vancouver,
right?
Based in Vancouver.
And then I realized, oh, and my calendar,
I'm actually invited, believe it or not, Cam Gordon,
I'm going to be at this electric circus reunion tomorrow night.
And I said to Monica, I said, I'll see you tomorrow night.
Like, I'm going to have back-to-back nights with Monica fucking Diole.
Can you believe this?
It's like 1992.
I mean, this is like really the much music renaissance.
Where is that event?
I saw George Logigianus.
That one?
Which one?
The one from last Friday?
Oh, is that a different one?
So 299 Queen Street had its premiere.
This is the documentary about Much Music.
I was there as well.
And I was hanging with Stu Stone at this event.
Of course.
Roy Thompson Hall.
Yeah.
I saw Brian Dunn was there.
Yeah, Brian Dunn got my plus one.
Because I like the sniffles.
Oh, that was your plus one. That was your plus one.
I know.
Serious FOMO.
I forgot that was you.
And I told Stu it was going to be you.
And with Stu, Stu goes, where's Cam?
I'm like, Buffy bailed.
I did bail.
I was sniffly and I didn't want you to get sick.
And I was at the slow dive concert the next day.
But I was by myself and I wore masks.
So I don't know.
COVID's everywhere.
I just want to be extra careful.
I'm running down the list of the rest of these.
And then I have a song for one of mine
because I know I'm spending a lot of time.
So when was, what time was this this afternoon?
So I probably, let me say, I left at three.
I got there at 3.45.
And then I had to fly out of there at like,
I had to bolt at like 5.10 to get back
to pick up the kids on my bike.
Okay.
So yeah.
So I'll just run down a few names.
Ready for this?
These are almost,
yeah,
these are all FOTM.
Sitting down.
Erica M.
Yeah.
Michael Williams.
Yeah.
No,
no Cleveland,
no Bowie.
Yeah.
What did you say?
No Cleveland,
no Bowie.
Atta boy.
Steve Anthony.
Love him.
Boy in the Box.
Stu Jeffries.
Outlaws and Heroes.
No, no, no.
Mike and Mike.
Good rocking tonight.
Good rocking tonight, of course.
Welichka was Outlaws and Heroes.
Thorny, fellow Thorny alumni.
Welichka.
Who wasn't there tonight,
although I was with him last Friday.
Oh my God, all my friends.
Published author.
Hold on, who else?
May Potts.
Okay. CFNY legend. Love it. Liz Jan author. Hold on, who else? May Potts. Okay, CFNY legend, love it.
Liz Janik.
Do you know that name?
Also CFNY, yeah, a bit before my time,
but yeah, familiar.
Ingrid Schumacher.
Oh, radio, legend of the airwaves in the city.
Roger Ashby.
Oh my, oh, Mike.
Okay, now you've just outdone yourself.
And this woman who's not an fotm but she was there
and we were chatting it up oh wow and then this will help us introduce this topic before we catch
up and everybody i do have questions for cam and he's going to answer every fucking question i have
but first I have. But first... Better.
Was this on CFN Live? I don't think so.
I don't think so.
Stockwood? No chance.
So tell the listenership, why
do I have it loaded up? It was just a coincidence
I have this song loaded up. Well, tonight
you kind of buried the lead here.
This is a Kick Out the Jam episode. Can I crack open a glb yeah i'm gonna do that as well which one you're gonna
crack open the pale ale on the mic i i can never do this that's under the mic ever do this let's
this is under the mic i know you jerk You jerk.
What jams are you kicking out?
So it's, I think the theme is 10 more forgotten CanCon jams.
I feel like we've done other countdowns of this nature together, but there's so many of these,
and these are either a combination of really well-known CanCon artists
and not their most well-known songs or under-remembered songs.
And then some stuff just from like the dustbins of times.
I know I stumped you with a couple of these.
So that's what I'm going to do.
As we play these and you talk to them, I'm going to be very honest with you if I remember the song or not.
So this song that you did remove from your 10, so this is not an official jam you're kicking kicking out but you had it originally in your list and then you took it away so why did you take it
away um no specific reason i was just putting it together my list and it was it was just uh
just became a numbers game i i had like about a list of like 25 songs and uh this song we're
listening to right now which is of course kim stockwood from right so i was hanging with kim stockwood excellent this afternoon what was she i know she like she's
married to the guy who's the president of what caris or something like that yeah like she was uh
she's married and yeah oh yeah because i what does she do now like i'm not does she still performing
like she's still obviously in sort of the music scene if she's on the right i don't know but but uh we didn't get into that except uh i told her that i was in the room when easy rock
had a four-person uh morning show i was embedded as a journalist to live blog this event i think
we're talking like 2005 or two i don't know when we're talking to be honest maybe it's later in
the 2000s but the four people in the booth were humble howard glassman that's how i got the invitation colleen rush home right rick hodge
whoa and kim stockwood wow so she was like a radio personality was she like a guest that time
she was a radio uh host on uh easy rock well good good good for her like she seems cool and uh as
you may recall there was a super group called Shay.
Of course, Dabnett Doyle. Yeah, who's in FOTM.
I feel like they're all
East Coasters. Am I wrong? Who's the third
woman in that trio?
I'll say it was Tara McClain.
Maybe someone in the chat
could fact check. If MF's in there,
we're going to get to it.
I have many, many, many questions.
Who's the third person in Shay? I feel like it was tara mcclain somebody google that and let us know
but okay so cam gordon we're gonna kick out these forgotten canadian
cancon jams this sounds like a bill sorry bill it sounds like a bill
it sounds like a bob willett type topic like bob would be all i think i think
that's fair yeah like it's uh This is for the hardcore, for sure.
This is not a...
It could be a casual listening experience at all.
I'm excited.
Now, thank you, Great Lakes Brewery,
for sending over the Fresh Craft beer for Cam and I,
because Cam needs to get a little tipsy here,
because it's going to get heavy here.
Cam Gordon, where the hell have you been the last 11 months?
God, where have I not been, Mike?
So where do you want to start? Like when... Okay, so let's start this way. Sure. When was the last 11 months. God, where have I not been, Mike? So where do you want to start?
Like when?
Okay, so let's start this way.
Sure.
When was the last episode?
So for the toast, we were doing toast every month.
You and Stu were here in the basement for November's toast.
At the end of it, we discussed, like we just had a high level chat about, oh, soon Stu might have to go to the States to film the wrestling documentary
series Dark Side of the Ring
but then I got a call from you
saying that you need
like to tap out for a little bit like you
basically asked can I get out of this
toast obligation for a bit like
why did you want to remove
yourself from the Toronto Mic'd podcast
yeah I mean it's a good question
this is gonna be some real talk I'm gonna it's hard for me not to be completely like
sarcastic with like everything I say, but I'm gonna try my best. But yeah, I mean, that time
when I think back to a time in my life, I mean, as you know, famously, because you fucking blogged
about it. I had lost my job at Twitter, which is really how you and I know each other,
because you completely ignored my emails prior to getting that gig. After seven and a half years,
and obviously, like, it's always like tough to lose one's job, and especially one that you'd
had for such a long time. And I don't know, like, I just found after that whole living through that
whole experience for like six or seven
months and sort of,
you know,
the new owner buying it and Willie or won't even what's going to happen.
And it was all just so public and,
and you know,
it was pretty deep.
This is a pretty deep cut when I lost my,
it wasn't just me.
It was like everyone I worked with on,
on the communication team globally.
A lot of people in our Toronto office,
a lot of people like in our policy team
and sales team.
So yeah, it was kind of a lot.
I just, it was sort of like reflecting
and it's like, shit, what am I going to do now?
Can you please, when were you fired?
It was the night after the bandits premiere.
That right, yeah.
It was like-
Because I was at that, I sat with you, didn't I?'t i that's right yeah it wasn't even really later that night it was that night because
it was midnight oh like 3 a.m or something i don't know like i got a but when was that do you know
like are we talking like is this december no no it was like really really early november it's like
november 3rd or 4th or so but when you did toast in november did you had you, had you already been musked? Oh yeah. Yeah. I think I probably just said like,
I don't want to talk about it. Okay. We just didn't bring it up. Okay. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
So anyway, point being, I was sort of just like reflecting, like, what am I going to do next?
And I really did start thinking, cause as you know, even though I'm the, I've appeared on your
podcast more than any. 100 times, ladies and gentlemen, and we'll get back to that.
But on the flip side, I'm actually like quite a private person.
So it's sort of just like reflecting a lot on just sort of privacy and sort of my SEO and like my public profile and whatnot.
And I really just thought, okay, I need to take a step back and take stock of kind of where I'm at just with my career and a lot of other things and
just like life changes and whatnot so I think I just needed a man to breathe really and then
you needed to step away from the bright lights of Toronto Mike yeah exactly and just take some time
and it was really it wasn't I'll I say this very sincerely it wasn't a decision I took lightly
because coming down here is just awesome every single time
and obviously doing the whole run of Pandemic Fridays and Toast
and all the shows with Brother Bill and Bob Ouellette
and everybody else.
Progressive past of Modern Melodies.
We haven't done one of those since 2022 as well.
Yeah, so it was a really hard decision to make for sure
and I definitely missed it. It's so awesome to be back, but it just at that time in sort of the subsequent
months, it's just, they sort of pieced everything back together. And then I just kind of got busy
with, um, not just my, my new job, but also, as you know, I got married, you, you were there,
you biked like seven hours to get there in Scarborough. Yeah. The bluffs, beautiful wedding.
Uh, yeah. Congratulations on your marriage to MF.
Yeah, yeah.
So that was awesome and has been going great.
So just, yeah, just like stuff going on.
I was there to represent the FOTMs.
And we can share the story that I had like original notes from MF
on what was going to be the song that plays
when the happily married couple does their walk
out of the ceremony
room or whatever. And I can't remember
what it was originally supposed to be.
It was going to be the Cure Friday I'm in Love.
No, no, but originally it
was Justin Timberlake.
Justin Timberlake can't stop the feeling.
Which you think is a seeming
polish it. I hate it.
That's okay. But you wanted it.
MF wanted it.
So I had it loaded on the iPad.
It was ready to go.
And I had notes.
I printed out the notes
because MF sent me a very detailed Google document
that I printed out
and I had it in front of me
because I'm in the back corner
with the audio video stuff
and I'm firing off the audio on cue.
So I fired this off
and then later it turns out
and unbeknownst to me because i didn't
open it but mf had sent a revised google doc at some point before the ceremony to to that that
in this revision uh there was a new song that you guys were going to walk out to which is friday i'm
in love by the cure which is a much better song than this justin totally agree pile of shit but
i didn't read it like i just didn't open it because i'd already printed it that was the thing yeah once i printed it is like fuck you bride i've got the songs this
is ordering off the menu and then we will as you recall we barely had a dongle to make this whole
yeah so how did you feel when i told you the audio vision video team couldn't you it was your
ipod and you had to plug it in.
What are those little,
what's that called?
Yeah, dongle.
Yeah, but the headphone jack,
the old school kind
that I still rock.
Or like the fire port.
You needed like an Apple
lightning port or something
and you needed a dongle
to convert.
Anyway,
this audio video place
didn't have it
and I saw your face.
You're already a pale guy but you
went another shade of white there there you go shout out to procol uh hair and the lighter shade
of pale right but it was kind of i forgot about this actually you just bring it all back now it
was the moment when i saw your face when i said hey they don't have a dongle because i didn't
have a fucking dongle and i was asking guests at this wedding like there was some uh nice people
at this wedding dongle in the house you got a don some nice people at this wedding. There's a dongle in the house.
You got a dongle.
He got one in your car.
Anybody got a dongle?
Like I was that guy.
I thought it was going to be like just blasting like from your phone or something. Like have a John Cusack say anything type thing.
I was ready to sing it.
I had Googled the lyrics.
Like I was going to sing.
If only you knew Michael Williams, we could have got the nylons and just do some acapella.
Do you know he opens for the spoons?
There you go.
There you go.
Did you hear the second Michael Williams yet?
I did.
Yeah.
Guido Basso.
It was good, right?
Yeah.
Like that music he played was really sort of all over the place.
Like it was awesome.
Like God, what a passionate man.
And I spent today with him.
I feel like I see a lot of Michael lately.
He's become a very dear friend.
Okay, so your wedding,
I want to tell everybody,
classy wedding.
And it's like the first wedding I've been to
where there wasn't even a hint of like
the drunken uncle doing this or whatever.
Like it was so,
like everybody was so well behaved
and it was so classy.
Like there was zero controversy
other than me fucking up the uh the
exit song that was a my and again not was that mad that i fucked up the no no no of course not
of course not okay yeah but you nailed everything you hit the post uh as you may did did you ever
i meant to ask some of the music nerds there if anyone caught the song that uh me and my parents
walked down the aisle to.
You have to remind me. It was like a string version of like a,
I guess like a,
what I call like a pop hit.
What was the song?
I mean,
it was a string version of the Smiths.
Please,
please,
please let me get what I want.
I saw that crowd that was going over their head.
Yeah.
I don't think anyone caught that.
Even like the,
the aging music nerds.
It was a bit of a deep cut.
Okay, so your wedding, you're still happily married.
I know you had an anniversary in Greece.
We did, yeah.
Well, no, our honeymoon in Greece.
Yeah, what did I say?
Okay, anniversary.
Yeah, so we just got back like about a week and a half ago,
and that was awesome.
So tell me about your decision to return to Toronto, Mike.
Did you just say, okay, 11 months is enough I'm ready
to come back yeah pretty much I don't know it's just I don't know it's just again things have been
kind of busy but also just want to take some time to reflect and just recalibrate and whatnot and
yeah I mean no specific reason I would have been at the last TMLX, but it was when Megan, I'm sorry, when MF and I were away.
Wow.
You can kill that in post.
I can't do that.
Everyone knows.
Okay.
Yeah.
So,
you know,
I know we have another observation here.
Sure.
You've already disclosed how private you are for a guy who's been on a hundred episodes of this.
Very,
very ironic.
A very public podcast.
I mean,
I was in this room today
and i had people come over they just heard the michael williams like people are coming up to me
i'm like oh a lot of people like are listening to toronto mike like if you're a private person
don't come in my basement okay yeah meanwhile mf who we fucking call mf is on national television
whoever whoever that person is right so i don't understand and i still you know you know when i
took the photo at Rusty,
and then could you please delete the photo on Rusty,
which is a private time.
The Rusty concert from hell.
Right, which is a great concert.
That was a good show.
I got shouted out in empty cell, as you know.
It's on YouTube.
It's on YouTube.
Anyway, I find it interesting how radically private for such public people.
Yeah.
Well, you know, when you're a media power couple
it's uh i don't know i wouldn't know yeah none of it makes sense but uh such is life and also
may i point out that you when you told me the news you needed to step away i was uh sad because i
enjoy my toast episodes although i have i'm gonna ask you in a minute whether you've heard any of
the new toast but before you tell me that i uh i was thinking cam talks about music
like fun facts uh the tears are not enough this uh the smith's that like i don't think you've ever
said a even slightly controversial statement on this program maybe when you kicked out march of
the pigs as a spring jam yeah but like a non a non-music take. Right, like you don't have any takes
that could jeopardize your career in PR,
as far as I can tell.
I know, I'm just, I'm risk averse.
But it's hard because I also love,
I love hopping on the mic here.
Well, you're talking music today.
Yeah, so it's tough.
I'm complicated.
You know that.
Of course, that's why I like it.
We all are.
We are a long rank.
So 11 months, you're back.
Glad to have you back.
Good to be back.
Thank you so much for having me.
Here's a big question for you.
I have another TMLX event scheduled for December 9 at noon.
It's going to take place at Palma's Kitchen.
More on Palma in a moment.
Palma's Kitchen at noon, December 9. i said it twice it's tmlx 14
how do you feel cam gordon about a pandemic friday reunion at tmlx 14 i mean i i i'd be down if uh
the stew stew stone is down absolutely it's just a holiday special absolutely and i've been to that
venue before it's a great venue.
Always have a good turnout.
I remember... Do you enjoy their food?
I love their food.
Anthony Petrucci?
That's it.
Yeah.
Anthony and the team,
they take good care of us out there.
Absolutely.
I'm down if Stu's down.
If he's in town,
he's hard to nail down.
Cambrio is remarking on the live stream,
live.torontomic.com,
that you were on edge at the Vandits premiere.
So Cambrio was feeling your anxiety that night.
Yeah, I was not, like kidding aside,
I was not in a good headspace.
I was really there just out of solidarity for Stu
because a lot of my high school pals were there that night too.
But yeah, my-
DJ Farsi?
Yeah, I think Farsi was there. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, but my head was elsewhere. Snow was there. because a lot of my high school pals were there that night too. But yeah. DJ Fartsy?
Yeah, I think Fartsy was there.
I'm pretty sure.
Yeah.
But my head was elsewhere. Snow was there.
That's right.
Yeah.
See, that's the thing.
Like I was so like anxious about, you know,
what was about to happen with my gig at Twitter
that I just couldn't enjoy it.
And then like Snow walked in.
I couldn't enjoy that randomness.
And he had a dog with him, didn't he?
Did he have a dog with him?
That's right.
Yeah.
I think he did.
So Ian Service and I were walking out and Snow was just sitting there.
And then Ian's like, go talk to Snow.
And I had this moment of like, okay, Mike, you can bug this guy at the theater.
It's fucking Snow.
And I decided to leave him alone and I regret it.
I should have talked to Snow.
There you go.
And what does Snow, does he still, I feel like he still like performs once a while.
Like he'll show up somewhere.
I don't know.
He showed up at the Bandits premiere,
for God's sakes.
By the way,
Greg is clarifying,
many have actually clarified on the live stream
that Tara McClain was the third member of Shea.
Okay, very good.
And do you remember their big hit?
No.
Pretty Baby.
Oh, yep.
Much more music classic.
I remember thoroughly enjoying my chat with Davnet Doyle.
She's cool.
She was also on the Completely Ignored podcast
with myself and Sammy back in the day.
What's the status of the Completely Ignored podcast?
It's been completely stricken from the internet.
I actually deleted my Podbean account.
Oh, Cam?
So Sammy Cohn had a question for you.
Let me jump to that.
What's Cam's favorite Doug and the Slugs song?
Stay day
by day. That's a song. That's a big
I need to watch that. There's the
documentary. Michael Williams is in it. Is he?
Oh, my God. Denise Donlan is
all over that thing. Perfect. Yeah.
I got a lot of time for Doug and the
Slugs, even though I only know like four songs.
I know three.
Tom Cad Prowl?
Well, Too Bad was a big one.
So Too Bad and... Too Bad's just kind of a piece of shit.
I like it because I liked Norm Macdonald
and he used it as the theme song to his show.
But you mentioned...
Oh, there's another...
Making It Work.
Take a little longer.
Making It Work's okay, yeah.
Making It Work. That's a good... That it work's okay, yeah. Making it work.
That's a good...
That still gets spins.
There's a song,
Gotta Be Monday,
that's like a great sort of 80s AM rock tune.
Has a good video that's kind of a Nosferatu theme.
Very interesting.
Look it up.
It's on YouTube.
I may have watched it like way too many times
for some reason.
Okay, Cam, this is Toronto Mike.
So I'm going back to a topic and we'll see if you plead the fifth and move on
or not.
It's up to you.
But I do wonder what you're willing to share about what Twitter was like under
the rule of Elon Musk.
Well,
I don't really have much to share.
Who's,
is this your question or who's,
who's asking?
It was asked.
I'm going to give,
yeah,
Diamond Dog just wrote, Elon, he he goes elon spill the tea so that's what diamond dog wrote and i'm
just uh extrapolating on that yeah that this is not honestly this is not just me being completely
risky it's just like it it was only like a handful of days so like i can't really say
um because it's just did you know you were did you feel in your heart that you were done the a handful of days. So like, I can't really say, um,
cause it's just,
did you know you were,
did you feel in your heart that you were done the minute that,
uh, you learned Elon was going to buy this?
I'll just say like,
none of us were very optimistic within sort of the communications team,
just knowing,
uh,
kind of his approach to like P all things PR.
Yeah.
Well now you get an auto email with like a shit emoji.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like you've been replaced by a shit emoji. Yeah. So I mean, you with like a shit emoji yeah yeah you've been
replaced by a shit emoji yeah so i mean you know the shit emoji is doing a better job
some some might argue that i don't know it was a tough company to do pr for but um was i at the
do you want my peer spin it's like you know but i i've no group that company they treat me very
well and um a bit kidding aside like i i just i mean god like
i feel like other than my immediate family like half the people i invited to the wedding were
like people i met either at twitter or through twitter which i think you could put yourself into
that category and uh and jennifer hallett will be here on friday perfect my former colleague who
unless she bails because i actually am a little pissed off that my
guest tomorrow morning at 9 a.m i had a uh like a nice long chat with uh somebody i become friendly
with uh ben mulrooney yeah and i'm all loaded up and ready for 9 a.m tomorrow and i got it when i
got home from this uh you know red carpet event i had a text about how buffuffy needs to bail basically. Not bail,
it's the wrong word. He needed to postpone
because he has this
job opportunity thing that's very
important to him. He's sorry.
I got the sorry dude.
Anyway, I will not be
having Ben Mulrooney on the show tomorrow.
He'll be back though, right?
He says he wants to do it. We just have
to postpone. When is Jen coming back?
Friday the 6th of October.
Friday the 6th, okay.
It would be interesting if they were on the same day
because they were on that show.
I think it was called like The Chat Room or what was that?
It was like Seamus O'Regan was on it too.
Do you remember this?
This is like around 2000.
I have a note on this.
Hold on.
Where is my note on this?
Yeah, this was before Jen was even on much music, I feel like.
Oh, yeah.
So a question came in.
So for Jen, this is a spoiler alert.
I don't know if Jennifer will hear this episode.
Maybe she will because her former colleague Cam Gordon is on it.
But Steve writes in, curious if Jen Hollett and Ben Mulroney are still friends.
I know their politics don't mesh, but they seemed friendly back on CTV Talk TV.
Talk TV, right. Which is where I first learned of her and of Ben in the early 2000s. know their politics don't mesh but they seemed friendly back on ctv talk tv talk tv which is
where i first learned of her and of ben in the early 2000s yeah i really enjoyed that show
channel and thought she was great on it i i feel like that show was an attempt to like put a an
aol chat room on tv because it was kind of like hip young millennials uh not when i've been
millennials like i guess they were like gen x types but like you know just kind of like hip young millennials. Well, not even millennials.
I guess they were like Gen X types,
but just kind of shooting the shit live on TV.
And there was like a computer.
I feel like Jen was like on a computer in the corner and she'd be taking questions from like the talk TV forum
around the same time as the show The Lofters.
With Jennifer Hedger.
With Jennifer Hedger, right.
And season two with Mike.
I think was Todd Shapiro ever
no he was on a different reality show I think
I think the host of
Big Brother Canada was on it
Ayesha
Cox
Alisa Cox
I can see her
and Carolyn Jarvis who's on Global
I don't know if she's still there she was on Global News
I might have told you this season 2 And Carolyn Jarvis, who's on Global. I don't know if she's still there. She was on Global News.
I told you this.
Season two, my mom was almost on it.
Not as a lofter.
She almost hit in the background.
I've met your mom now.
Can I reveal that as well?
Sure.
I have met Mr. and Mrs. Gordon.
There you go.
Yeah, my dad said he had a good chat at the wedding under like a tree or something. I think I told him all the males in his family have the same name
or the same comedy scenes.
That is true.
Anyway, my mom's old boss, my mom was a nurse
and worked in a clinic during the 1990s.
And her boss at that clinic, those-
Your mom was a nurse.
And today I was at an event where Platinum Blonde
was going to be walking the red carpet,
but I had to leave and pick up my kids.
As you know, delivered a baby for Mark Holmes that she didn't want us talking about and if i stuck around if i didn't
have these damn kids i would have had a face-to-face with mark and i could have told him that there you
go the guy coming to my house tonight his mom delivered his baby yeah you probably don't
remember mark but uh and anyway my mom's boss at this clinic her daughter uh heather bossiano was
on season two of the lofters love this is why i love you on the show there you go just tangents
the whole fucking time i love it so you're there's not much for you to say except that uh elon came
he chopped does it feel better because he lopped off all these roles. Like it's not personal. Like it's not like you said,
fuck you, Cam, get out of my place.
Yeah, I mean, in some ways it's like,
I don't know, again, like I'm not.
You were musked.
You didn't like me blogging about it.
Is that true?
Yeah, well, it sucks.
Like I never lost my job before.
And again, I did struggle with how public it was
because everyone,
even like we're on the honeymoon in Greece
and you know,
you just get talking to people in ferry lines or whatever.
It comes up. I used to work for Twitter.
Everybody's like, oh, did Elon fire
you? It's like, yeah, because he fired
most people. Yeah. So I'm like,
yeah, he did. And it's like that
that's fine. It's like I really
there's no shame in that. Like I know we're like
a badge of honor that I got musked. Yeah.
Yeah. It's nothing personal. He
just didn't want a Canadian communications. He doesn't want any communication we didn't want any communication
that's fine he bought the company that's the way to go down sure did they treat you fairly in the
severance uh yours with me they did yeah well that's all that matters yeah so it's it's whatever
i mean you're satisfied yeah very and it was again it was an awesome experience. And I know you spent a lot of time at the office, too.
I do miss, like, all the events and all the snacks and whatnot.
I was going to ask you, did I attend the final Twitter candidate, that sports breakfast?
You did with, who was on that?
Adam Seaborn was a panelist, kind of the sports on social recap.
Yeah, who was?
I think it was Adam and Connor, who was our sports guy, and Agnes Wong, who I think works.
She used to work for the NHL in their social team.
I believe she's with Red Bull now.
I remember Simon Hoff.
How do you say his last name?
Simon was there.
Hopped?
There's an F, a P, and an F.
I think it's like a Dutch thing, I think, but Simon Hoff.
Yeah, so he was there and some other journalists.
But yeah, the last ever event at that Twitter Canada office.
See, I'm going to wear that like a badge of honor.
Like, I attended the that Twitter Canada office. See, I'm going to wear that like a badge of honor. Like I attended the final Twitter Canada event.
May I ask, is that office still leased by Twitter
or did they give up the office?
That, I don't know, to be honest.
I think about it every time I'm biking on Strawn
and I turn on The King or whatever.
No, like I went right by it the other night
when I was going to a slow dive concert at C&E. I'm like like oh yeah i i don't know like i'll see there's not that many
people i worked with who i are still there um so i'll have to get back to you on that i don't know
right well you're 101st appearance i want to find out okay so you quit toast essentially and then
stew's like oh that's prevent that saves me from having to zoom in from my busy
trip to the states to do this recording yeah so it all kind of like then toast died but i didn't
want toast to die i just knew i had a cam and a stew that weren't going to visit for toast but i
wanted to continue toast so i got what i called coin vans right yeah true you to the hilt you
that that analogy you just i like that analogy that analogy. Mike, there's so many like wrestling
analogies. Like the new
Heart Foundation and the new
Midnight Express.
You can use that on completely ignored.
Like the under faker. Do you remember this?
When there was like a fake Undertaker?
No, I bailed on like 80.
Like the two Undertakers fought.
88 I think is my
last professional wrestling year.
Okay, so it's been a while.
My question is, with the new toast,
and we've done, I think we've done nine.
I think there's 11 toasts that were done by you and Stu.
And now there's been nine by Rob Pruce and Bob Willett.
Yes.
Have you heard any of the Rob and Bob toasts?
I have.
I missed the last few episodes,
but I did listen to the first few
because I like both those guys very much.
And I think they bring a different sensibility.
Like Rob Pruce is probably,
I'd say the nicest FOTM ever.
Just like such a good spirit.
And Bob's like awesome.
Like I think everyone.
Bob's pretty nice too,
but he at least will try to mix it up
just to get under my skin.
But Rob's just a pure sweetheart.
Bob lives in my neighborhood too.
Like Bob's just like a few blocks over,
although I don't think I've ever seen him around,
but yeah,
I mean,
it's a good listen.
It's,
it's,
it's,
it's a,
it's a,
it's an award winning format that Stu and I authored,
um,
the IP over.
Toast is just Pandemic Friday.
And I came up with a name and we,
uh,
branded it,
but that's why the reunion
at TMLX 14, if Stu
is down, and he says he's down if he's in town.
That rhymes. So we have to find out if Stu's
in town on December 9th. But if he's in town,
the reunion's not a toast
reunion. The new toast is Rob and Bob.
They've got the gig. It'll be a
Pandemic Friday reunion. Absolutely.
Let's make it a super spreader event
just to get in the pandemic. That's when I got my COVID was right after the be a pandemic friday reunion absolutely let's let's make it a super spreader event and just
just to get in well you know that's when i got my covid was right after the last palm of palmas
event so let's keep a little deja vu let's keep rocking vps sales is the man who keeps track of
how many appearances everybody has and it was a wild coincidence to learn that stew was making
his 90th appearance uh the same week that mark Weisblatt was making his 60th appearance
and that you were in the calendar for your 100th appearance.
Like this is a wild coincidence.
So VP of sales wants to know what I'm giving you
to commemorate your 100th appearance on Toronto Mike.
Are you ready?
Yes.
You're taking home a meat lasagna.
It's in my freezer right now from Palma Pasta.
That's going home for you and MF to enjoy.
That's awesome.
Fabulous.
Don't leave here.
It's in my freezer.
Don't leave without it.
Thank you, Palma Pasta.
But waiting 11 months for this.
This is awesome.
You haven't eaten in 11 months.
I haven't.
Exactly.
So thank you, Great Lakes.
Thank you, Palma Pasta.
Thank you, Ridley Funeral Home.
I have a measuring tape I'm going to grab for you in a moment
because you're always measuring stuff, and now you, Ridley Funeral Home. I have a measuring tape I'm going to grab for you in a moment because you're always measuring stuff,
and now you'll have a new measuring stick.
All the time.
Thank you to Ridley Funeral Home.
DJ Dream Doctor wants me to ask you about your years with The Spill magazine.
And then I'd like you maybe also to talk about your years with Chart Attack
because as you see, I have a vintage copy of Chart Attack that was mailed to me from Brother Bill.
Amazing.
Yeah, like I can't remember when a longtime listener and chat room person, DJ Dream Doctor, discovered.
Yeah, we actually know each other because we, I think it's still around.
Do you know what this is?
The Spill.
Have you ever seen this?
I don't remember this name the spill was like a hard copy music newspaper that i think started
probably in the late 90s used to be able to get it like sonic boom records and um you know when
there used to be like a lot of like just like record stores around like edwards record world
and uh places like that you'd find a lot in the annex.
It was run by this guy named Arvin who lives in Mississauga.
As far as I know, it was like self-financed,
but he had just done it for so long.
He was always in the mix for like all the CD mailing lists from all the labels and like Canadian Music Week
and North by North East.
And not that stuff paid, but it was a good way, you know,
if you want to get some free CDs
and get some shows for free and write
yeah I wrote
for that thank you
for that newspaper and website for many years
I interviewed Ron Hawkins once for it
I was with him last week
we met at the Moon Bean Cafe in
Kensington I remember that I interviewed the
Shuffle Demons for that the
Constantines should I spend the next hour askingons for that, the Constantines.
Should I spend the next hour asking you all the episodes since your last
appearance if you heard it or not?
Anyway, but funny enough,
DJ DreamDock was like a fellow writer
and I remember very well, we used to meet at
God, if he's
in the chat room, the pub we used to meet at
at Bathurst and Bloor. I don't think he's
in the chat, but if he is, let us know.
That was a
Twitter tweet from earlier.
Richard Underhill, by the way, made his
Toronto Mike debut this summer.
Yeah, that's who he spoke to.
But anyway, there's the pub that's right at Bathurst and Bloor.
It's still there. It's owned by the same people as the Madison.
We used to meet there. Arvin would bring
this duffel bag with all the CDs.
I remember he'd describe what
they were.
It's kind of like whatever crap was out in the CDs. I remember you'd like describe what they were just,
you know,
it's kind of like whatever crap was out in the air.
This is like sort of 2004,
2005,
but yeah,
one of the fellow writers,
DJ dream doctor.
Wow.
You know who else was a writer at that time?
I don't know.
Richard Chepunsky.
No,
you probably don't know what this is.
Jenny Yoon.
She,
she was a writer for the Toronto sun for many years, and now I think works for Unifor.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, but she was like a writer,
and I feel like there was someone else
who went on to do some other music writing who was there.
But again, small, tiny paper.
It's still around.
But yeah, shout out to Arvin.
If you're ever listening,
thank you again for the opportunity.
It was a lot of fun writing for this bill.
Have you seen the Play the Record documentary?
It's titled Drop The Needle.
It's on my list.
As you know, I don't watch,
although this is like how much things have changed.
Like I famously don't watch movies or television,
but now I'm addicted to a TV show.
Which show?
Jeopardy.
Okay, I watch a lot of Jeopardy.
Yeah, so every night it's a little ritual.
I watch it with MF and my daughter.
Oh, that's sweet.
Yeah, Monica likes to watch it too.
And I kick her ass.
Actually, I think I shared this in our group chat.
One of our former Twitter comms colleagues was just on Monday, Elaine Philadelphia.
She was like our research comms lead and also a big baseball fan.
She was based in D.C. and she was very friendly with Keith Law.
Wow.
Yes, of course, of course.
Who famously used to be the assistant GM of the Blue Jays under J.P. Ricciardi.
Right.
Or like a scouting lead or something.
Like he worked for the Jays in the Ricciardi regime.
I completely forgot about that.
Anyway, you follow the money.
Shout out to Moneyball.
That's how we ended up with J.P., by the way.
There you go.
I want to get to these Kirkland quality
forgotten CanCon jams.
You've got 10 of them we're going to kick out.
Oh, yeah, I need my notes.
Get your notes out,
because I'm about to kick out the first one.
But we are in the Halloween season, Cam.
You know what's a nice trip for you and MF?
Milton, Ontario for Pumpkins After Dark.
This is an award-winning Halloween event.
September, it's already running now.
I don't have to tell you when it starts
because it already started,
but it runs through Halloween.
If you buy your tickets now at pumpkinsafterdark.com,
you can save 15% with the promo code T-O-MIKE.
Pumpkins After Dark for MF and Cam.
Still madly in love.

are you ready? Yeah, absolutely.
And just before we get started,
I didn't finish my sentence. Yes, yes.
Are you ready to kick out the Kirkland
quality can con jam?
Yeah, what are you going to say before I press play?
Oh, no, it was going to be a lead into the first
I'm just like chomping at the bit
here. Dude, wait, say it again.
Chomping at the bit.
That's fucking wrong.
What is it?
It's champion at the bit champ.
How do you know?
I said chomping at the bit when Steve Paken was here.
Now I know you didn't listen.
Okay.
And Steve corrected me and I was educated.
It is not chomping at the bit.
It is champion at the bit that,
that like glimmer in your eyes. I was so
happy. If I suggested that Bare Naked Ladies
debuted in Speaker's Corner
their first. That came up tonight in the
at this event that we were talking
about getting facts right in
documentary. I was going to say you're unbridled
I can only call it rage
about Retro
Ontario doubling down on
Let's Not Let a Good Story
get in the way.
I am angry,
but we've talked since then.
I am angry.
MTV or the YTV
fucking Youth Achievement Awards.
Like, I don't know.
Well, I want to know
what you know.
Is this a clip
from that show?
This is YTV in 1990,
late 1990.
Listen closely, Cam.
Thank you. late 1990 listen closely Cam thank you thank you everybody
we'd like to thank
Nigel and Mary Ann
and Hal from CFNY
that's Hal Harbour
by the way
there you go
R.E.P.
we'd also like to thank
Colin James
shout out to Ridley
Field at home
yes
so this is YTV
you've heard of YTV
of course
hi Andy well you know thanks a lot for this award this is pre-. You've heard of YTV. Of course. Hi, Andy.
Love you.
Hi, Andy.
Well, you know, thanks a lot for this award.
This is pre-Tyler Stewart, by the way.
To accept something like this.
Well, you just can't measure how happy we were when we heard the results.
We knew our friends really liked us, but these were adults saying,
Hey, Barenaked Ladies, you're a serious act.
You won the award.
Really?
Yes, it's a fact.
Now, Cam, I want to hear your thoughts on this.
I'm not suggesting Ed Conroy should go to prison, okay?
I don't think this documentary should be banned from being viewed on Crave TV.
Yeah.
I'm just pointing out to my tiny circle of followers that in this doc,
it is explicitly stated that the Barenaked Ladies made their television debut
on Speaker's Corner.
And I'm just here like the last guy standing
who maybe gives a fuck about the truth,
which is actually the Speaker's Corner performance
of Yoko Ono came after this moment
we're listening to now on YTV.
Should I not give a fuck?
Like, should I not point this out?
Like, I'm not saying arrest that director,
Sean Menard.
Right.
I'm not mad at retro Ontario.
I love that man.
Of course.
He's a fellow hall of famer.
I'm going to see him tomorrow night at this electric circus reunion,
actually.
So you tell me,
should I not be bringing this up with great passion?
I'm just interested in the truth.
Cause a documentary that tells a lie is not a documentary.
The thing is, if you don't, who will?
Doesn't it matter?
Aren't we still living in a world where facts,
you can have bias and opinion and spin and cherry pick this
and conveniently ignore that.
And that happens all the freaking time.
But maybe a black and white statement like,
the Barenaked Ladies made their television debut
on Speaker's Corner.
Yes, it suits the narrative of your Much Music doc,
but that doesn't make it true.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, I'm glad you're holding Ed Conroy to account.
And by the way,
if you've ever asked him about his stint editing the magazine,
it's called The Magazine Not For Adults. Have you ever talked asked him about his stint, um, editing the mag is it's called the magazine,
not for adults.
Have you ever talked to him about this?
You,
if you text me or message it to me and it goes in my document and then next
time he's on,
I did chat with him after I wrote my scathing blog post about,
uh,
this,
that,
cause I just,
my point was,
if you had a whole blog,
just like I wrote about you getting musked,
right?
I write it. I've been, I saw that. That this. Just like I wrote about you getting musked. Right. I saw that one.
That's another thing.
I don't know if anyone knows.
I get thoughts in my head
and it pops out as a blog entry on torontomike.com.
And I don't even take that moment,
like the smart moment like you would do
to read it a few times,
sit on it for a bit,
then press publish.
No, I think it,
I type it,
I press publish.
And then maybe several days later,
I'll start to regret it.
Who knows?
There you go.
But I did write about this,
but I talked to Ed because I love that man.
He's an FOTM Hall of Famer just like you,
and I can't wait to see him tomorrow.
Where's this event, by the way?
I'll tell you.
Maybe during the song, I'll find out.
I was going to say, can I come?
I don't know if I have a plus one.
Joel Goldberg put me on the list joel goldberg wants he wants yeah jay gold he wants to walk me he's gonna he says
he's gonna take me to moses sounds all right oh my god this is tomorrow night oh my god so joel
goldberg has this fantasy where i sit down with moses for an episode of toronto mic okay
wise blot laughs at this because Moses doesn't do any media
he doesn't have like control over.
It took Ed Conway like months
to get like six sentences.
Log TO owner,
Moses Snyder.
Right.
So,
Joel Goldberg is going to walk me to Moses,
introduce us,
and witness my pitch,
which, you know,
my pitch is just my pitch,
but he wants me to have FaceTime with Moses.
Could he like, I'm not even going to record this.
Could somebody take video of this?
I would love to see this.
This would be incredible.
I'm not taking the video.
Oh my God.
Do you, do you think, what do you say the odds?
Moses, if not comes down to the basement,
at least you came on Toronto, Mike,
what do you say the odds?
So I'm not pitching that.
I don't believe there's, I'm not
pitching that. Okay. I've done
this long enough. I'm smart enough to know
Moses is not coming in my basement.
Okay. But my pitch is
that I bring my studio
to the Zoomerplex, set up
in his office there, and we
have a chat with the, I'm
going to chat up the visionary on
all his accomplishments during a
pretty wild and amazing career in canadian media like let's talk about it but i will come to him
well i was gonna say i mean you know there might only be perhaps you know 12 36 and maybe connie
tson at broadcast dialogue a few others would be aware of this. Shout out to Connie. Love that one. Yeah, Zoomer, you know, bought BlogTO,
bought Daily Hive. Are you
trying to
PMDS? Is this what this is all about?
No. Is this kind of the exit plan?
You know what? I don't sell out like that.
What's it worth? You know what? Is there a
number? Probably, but that
number is very large. Very large.
You're not getting Toronto Mike without
cutting a very bad check. You got all this bric-a-brac here.
The Andre Mike comes with it.
I don't even know how to separate Toronto Mike from me.
The wheat from the chef.
It's sort of weaved into a point where...
You are the brand.
Right.
You'd have to buy...
Basically, I'm for sale and I'm not for sales.
We're all for sale, Mike.
Love for sale rent.
Okay, that's not a CanCon jam.
I got to get to these roger miller yeah i believe
king of the road good good jam like that me and your dad were talking about that song
that's a bad wedding okay are you ready to kick out this first uh kirkland um yeah for sure
quick intro for this one okay two things one things. One. Shout out to Steve Anthony.
Before it plays,
are you familiar with this song?
I actually want,
I can't remember.
I need to hear it
and then I'll tell you
my honest answer in a moment.
Okay, two.
As we're listening to it,
think what other song
of the late 80s
does this remind you of?
Okay, I love this.
Cam, I love this game.
Because it's very, very similar
to a very well-known song
of that era, late 80s.
Okay, I love it.
Let's hear it.
Let's hear it. I could run faster than the wind Stare up to the sky
We open spaces
I could live and die
But man, you can't find that in no book
You'll never find that in no book
Someone will drag you down
And try to knock you under
Hey, mama said with the words of a man I need another circle here because it's reminding me of stuff.
But yeah.
And you know who this is even without.
Well, that delivery is unique.
I know who it is.
Absolutely.
So it's the boy in the who it is absolutely so it's
the boy in the box
yeah so it's
Corey Hart
name of the song
is In Your Soul
so this is from
an album called
Young Man Running
that came out
like 1988
end of the year
so yeah
like kind of
a more mature
sound of Corey Hart
the song that this
always reminded me of
okay wait
don't
not yet
yeah Always reminded me of. Okay, wait, not yet. Yeah. Yeah.
Not the backing vocals, though.
Sounds like a great,
sounds like a Sloan song from... No, come on.
Don't be silly.
All right, tell us what you're hearing. Bruce Springsteen
Brilliant Disguise.
I don't know if you've ever
seen this. There's a website called
YouTubedubbler.com
where you can play two YouTube
videos together. And I've done this with these two
songs and it's a real mindfuck
because they
are very, very similar.
Oh, and that's Clarence Clemons.
So big man.
There was a lot of Bruce Springsteen chatter yesterday because my guests were Jamie Campbell and Brad Fay.
Brad Fay has seen Bruce 102 times.
And we were talking about how I'm going to make my Bruce debut in November,
but then right after the episode, they canceled all the 2023 Bruce Springsteen.
What's the problem?
He had like pneumonia or something?
He's got an ulcer.
An ulcer.
Oh my God.
He's got ulcer issues.
We're all getting older.
Where's he playing at?
Rogers Center or?
Scotiabank Arena.
Scotiabank.
Wow.
You've never seen the boss before.
No, I've never seen the boss.
Have you?
No, no.
You seem shocked.
Yeah, he's fine.
You know, we're not from the 70s.
Like, I'm not saying...
Yeah.
Most diehard Bruce fans were listening to popular music in the 70s.
I wasn't.
I was listening to Raffy.
Although he was also like a real MTV star.
Yeah, well.
Like, he had some iconic videos.
Born in the USA.
Baby Courtney Cox up on safe dancing in the dark
biggest uh billboard hit and is a grunge hit streets of philadelphia i feel like i feel like
that week we heard that song yeah we heard that or dead man walking i like dead man walking yeah
and there's a pale horse coming what's up 42 channels nothing on or whatever 57 channels
anyway um i think this song's interesting
because Corey Hart was like massive.
It was really like him and Brian Adams.
What year are we talking here?
It's like 88.
Do you have no recollection of the song?
This was a pretty big hit.
No, but it's,
I have a feeling I know it.
I just,
like I can't picture any video for it.
The video,
he's in the desert
his backup singer. I'm going to
say a couple of words about her in a second.
It's sort of like a very moody. It
looks like the video for Morris.
He had that one video where he's in the desert
like a November spawn
a monster. I think it's kind of that similar
vibe to that. Okay,
who's the backup singer?
Who's oh shoot? Oh, I thought you had it there.
I thought you had it there.
Her name. Oh my God.
I didn't write her name down, but she's done a lot of backup
singing for a lot of other artists. Do you want to hear
them 20 feet from stardom? So we got
Brian Ferry. Okay,
we got UB 40
or big deal red red wine.
We got Stevie Wynwood. Do you Red Wine. We got Stevie Winwood.
Do you like Steve Winwood?
Just that late 80s stuff that he put out.
I don't remember the traffic stuff. Okay, yeah.
Like Roll With It and Higher Love.
Those two.
Yeah, those were the two big ones.
I was listening to Top 40 on CFTR and those two songs.
You would have heard this song.
This song was all over CFTR.
So it's familiar to me,
but maybe I just didn't like it
and therefore chose not to retain it.
This is part of the spirit of this episode.
Everyone knows Corey Hart.
Like it's not a bad song to listen to,
but because I was a huge fan of Boy in the Box.
Okay.
So of course there was Sunglasses at Night,
which was a big,
everybody,
a big jam.
But then when Boy in the Box came out,
I loved like Never Surrender, Boy in the Box, Shout Out to Steve Anthony. But then when Boy in the Box came out, I loved like, Never Surrender,
Boy in the Box,
Shout Out to Steve Anthony.
Monster jams.
But whatever he put out
after that,
disappointed young Mike.
Do you remember a song
called Bang?
She bangs,
she bangs.
Not she bangs,
just bang.
No.
No,
that was another like
later career Corey Hart jam.
Oh,
I'm appalling,
I know Corey,
I keep hearing from
Mark Weisblatt,
the fellow FOTM Hall of Famer, that Corey Hart's
coming on Toronto Mic'd.
I don't want to burn the bridge.
Is that him coming down the stairs? No, it's not.
I feel like Corey Hart, Jan Arden,
Tom Cochran, and
Randy Bachman, these are people
you're circling the drain on.
Bachman's booked!
That's breaking news for you. Bachman's
booked. All those other cats.
Well,
Corey said,
I was told by another person that was close to Corey that Corey was going to
come on and he never did.
Obviously.
And Tom told me he was going to come on,
but he hasn't.
Obviously.
Jan Arden never said she was coming on,
but the PR person for bandits said she was coming on.
Who I used to work with.
Okay.
Yes.
I won't name her.
No naming. No, because I looked, said she was coming on who i used to work with okay yes i don't i won't name her no naming no
because uh i looked i i still think i was made to look like quite the fool for tweeting out
uh apparently it's backman how do you say the name uh of the bto guy who's that politician
michelle bachman well okay so canada canada kev says it's backman by the way where why do i say
bachman where do we find the live stream to this?
It's live.torontomic.com.
Bach, right?
Bach is the composer,
so I just put man at the end of it.
Yeah.
How do you say it?
Be honest.
Don't just...
I say Bachman.
Okay, so you and I both say Bachman.
Canada Kev says it's Bachman.
But I've never...
I don't know.
I think it might be Bachman.
I'll have to talk...
That'll be my first question for Randy.
Randy.
There you go.
Ask him. That's my first question. Randy think it might be Bachman. That would be my first question for Randy. Randy, ask him.
That's my first question. Randy,
Bachman or Bachman?
And you will ask him why... But it wasn't Bachman-Turner overdrive. Wait a minute here.
You will ask him... It was Bachman-Turner
overdrive. You will ask him why it wasn't on
Tane. Well, that's the real
first question. I'm going to assume that's obvious because
Burden had like a... Porsche.
Yeah. Porsche. I know. Canada Kev is now communicating me through chat. He wants to know how I say Porsche. How do you say Porsche? Now he's going to assume that's obvious because Burden had like a Porsche. Yeah, Porsche. I know Canada Kev is
now communicating me through chat. He wants to know how I say
Porsche. How do you say Porsche? Now he's going to
tell me it's Porsche. Porsche. No one says
that. Okay, so back to the subject of
the matter. I eat a lot of food, but I don't get fatter.
Okay, so you're kicking out that Corey Hart jam
in your soul. Good. I
love that song. It's a great song. I
think it's a fairly forgettable
nice song, but you know if I liked it, I would have known. I also had all song. I think it's a fairly forgettable nice song. How dare you?
If I liked it, I would have known.
I also had all these notes about the baseball player Corey Hart.
Well, do it.
Do you have a date?
Well, no.
Just that he was the hitting coach for the Buffalo Bisons.
Did you know that?
Like just recently.
I did not know that.
2018.
And the fellow coach was none other than Devon White.
That's, I mean, Hebzion Sports guest Devon White.
There you go, Devo.
Just checking in on my, somebody was calling me.
Oh, I didn't answer.
Did you phone me tonight?
No.
Okay.
All right.
It's like a new phone stand.
Any more, you know what, Rob?
If you listen to Toast, you would know in the last episode of Toast,
that was gifted to me by Rob Pruess.
And I love it.
It's handy.
I love it.
I need to get one of those. That's good. And did you see what was gifted to me by Rob Pruess. And I love it. It's handy. I love it. I need to get one of those.
That's good.
And did you see what was gifted to me by Sammy Cohn?
Yeah, that I've seen before.
Brian Laney.
Okay, because it's new.
It's not...
It's Michael Williams' idol, I think you said.
That's right.
I'm glad you're listening.
I mean, you're obviously...
That's, you know, that's your archetype.
That's your model.
I aim to please.
Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
Are you ready for jam number two?
Yes, I am.
It's like Phil Collins.
Sounds like a lot of 80s music.
Yeah. It's true
I never planned it I don't understand it
From out of nowhere
There was you
And now I feel fine
The past romancing, in the day, advancing
Liquid cries, radio signs
And now, skin to skin
Over and over Oh, you know the night shines
When our love becomes electric
I feel like I may be asking you for every song to remember this.
You must know this.
Have you heard this?
This was the CFNY, or sorry, CFTR jam.
I listened to a lot of CFTR until I discovered Q107 in the late 80s
and switched there.
And then I made my move to CFNY in the very late 80s.
And I don't really remember this song.
Okay, I'm going to...
I mean, I could both smoke up your ass, Cameron,
but I choose to be very honest,
which is this is not ringing a bell.
Okay, the band, you know the band,
is Strange Advance,
Canadian new wave legends.
Can folks in the chat room...
Wasn't Kim Karpchampness the manager of Strange Advance?
That sounds right.
They had songs, Worlds Away.
I mean, they were definitely more new romantic
when they first came out.
Kind of sounded more like Visage or a band like...
I don't know, like Spando Ballet and stuff like that.
Let's see here.
Images in Vogue is actually the Kim Clark Champness band.
Images in Vogue.
I think they tour, but this song was all over 680 CFDR all hit.
I definitely remember this was a top 20 hit in Canada, too, around 1987, 1988.
but this was a top 20 hit in Canada too,
around 1987,
1988.
Um,
this song,
I remember when this was on the radio, I used to get a mixed up with,
for some reason,
wild,
wild West by the escape club to the wild,
wild West.
What do you,
what do you think of that club?
I like that jam very much.
Actually the,
uh,
wild,
wild West jam.
I remember very well,
but this,
but this,
you have no recollection.
It's not ringing a bell.
No.
I feel like I'm disappointing you.
The iconic wahoo.
Not really.
Wow.
It's very memorable.
Apparently not.
Well, you know what?
I don't remember lots of things,
but I do remember others.
But let's see.
Rerun for sure.
Yeah, this guy Greg is in the live chat
saying he doesn't remember this one either.
Does this exist?
Leslie remembers this song
but forgot who it was.
Leslie was a little older than me.
Yeah, We Run was a big hit.
Yes, and I remember We Run.
That used to get spins on the Retro Night from CFNY.
Anyway.
And I remember it very well.
Mike, you're going to want to remember this.
The name of the album this came from was The Distance Between.
You know who played on that album?
Rob Pruse.
Lay down a little guitar work.
Colin James. Randy Bachman.
See, you said Bachman.
I'm sticking with Bachman. Doesn't matter.
The great Randy
Bachman from...
Where does Randy live? Out below. Where does Randy live?
Out West.
Where does everyone live?
He's out West, but he's going to tour
with his son. Oh, I think he's
on Salt Spring Island or something.
Okay, well, Tall Bachman,
or is it Bachman? Regardless, maybe they're
both going to be touring with
Randy. But Randy
has got a connection to FOTM Universe
in that he lost
this guitar
a hundred years ago and
Steve Cole,
Steve Cole, good FOTM.
Hello, Steve.
He somehow
got some documentation
about it to Randy
and then yadda yaddaada yada Randy ended up reuniting
with this guitar and it was like a big story and thanks to Steve Cole he played a role in it I
don't want to give Cole played a role Cole played a role I don't want to give him too much credit
but he might he might deserve some and I will get the full story from Randy when he's on Toronto
Mike that's a that's an awesome story. One final Randy Bachman.
As we talk about strange advance.
I still find it so weird that you weren't at SARS Fest. I think I
heard, I mean, I knew a big thing was going on
and I think knowing everybody was going
made me not want to be there.
That's actually a very good reason.
It was like, I'll
go anywhere but
Downsview Park
I feel like it was on like every channel
I know but I don't even remember having any
FOMO like I never wanted to be
there isn't that strange it just felt like a big
thing like sometimes I don't want to do the big
thing it honestly was insane
I remember when the guest I think it was
when the guest who was playing like
song one I just went to the washroom
and by the time i was back
like rush was halfway through their set it was just it was so many people um there i mean it was
a good time but oh my god it was just it was it was it was not really like a concert experience
it was more like i don't know too many people well not even too many people i mean everyone
had a sars but whatever it's too busy. Nobody goes there anymore. Exactly.
Exactly.
Okay, third jam, because I want to tell you a memory I have of this band.
Very good. I don't care if it's rain or shine
I can be there anytime
Baby If it's rain or shine, I can be there anytime, baby.
Ooh, I don't care your place or mine.
Call me up, give me a sign, baby.
Ooh, don't stop now.
Not giving you up.
I can't stop now.
Not giving you up.
No, I won't stop now.
Not giving you up. I'll never give you up. I'll never give you up. Don't stop now. No, I won't stop now.
I'll never give you up.
Don't stop now.
I can't stop now.
No, I won't stop now.
I'll never give you up.
Finally, a jam I know.
What a great song.
One for three.
Don't Stop Now by Love and Sass. What a great song. One for three. Don't Stop Now by Love and Sass.
What a great song. It does
sound a lot like Keep On Moving
by Soul to Soul.
Shout out to who's your Soul to Soul friend?
Simon Law. Not Keith Law.
Simon Law. And not to
be confused by Don't Stop Now by Guided
by Voices. You know that one?
Don't know that one? You don't know that one?
You'd have to hum a few bars for me. We'll play that off
camera. And also Love and Sass,
not to be confused with Love Inc.
And I bring up Love Inc.
because Simone Denny,
the voice of Love Inc.,
is performing tomorrow night at this
electric circus event I'm attending.
So who are all the names
who are going to be there?
This is all I know.
Let's run them down. Monica Diol is there.
Okay.
George Lagogiannis.
Okay.
Who was in the
Toronto Mike calendar
and then told me
he's decided not to do
any chitter chatter
and he came out
of the calendar.
But I'll see him
tomorrow night.
Simone Denny,
the voice of Love Inc.
Huge.
Okay, this is funny.
This person's name
is Ludacris, but instead of a fine this person's name is ludicrous
but instead of a c it's a k okay can you do that like uh spelled differently like i can go i can
call myself bruce springsteen but instead of e-e-n it's like e-i-n i i think it's okay i don't know
about that yeah trick is big oh hey you want to go see ludicrous uh by the way this event is taking
i had the address i'll get it to you in a minute but it was uh downtown somewhere okay tricky moriera don't know that i don't know i
know tricky but okay uh mc flip side and nick fiorucci nick fioriucci okay so i don't know i
can't so what's going on is it are people dancing is this like a i don't know. I can't. So what's going on? Are people dancing? Is this like a club night? I'm there for the Moses meet and greet.
Okay.
And say hi to my friend Ed Conroy and Jay Gold.
And hang out with my new friend Monica Diole because we hit it off today.
Maybe give George Lagogenis the gears for bailing on Toronto Mike.
Ben Mulroney style.
And it's on King.
It's 627 King Street.
I remember for years the only place
you would see Monica Deol
when I think she was a bit more off the radar.
I don't even know what the ads were for
at the airport. You would see her
in a billboard campaign. I feel like it was like a
perfume or something.
She does, I think, a skin cream
that's targeting South Asian
women. Okay, very cool.
You would get it at Sephora.
No, I remember being at Pearson.
I would see like, oh my God, Monica.
She's probably the first South Asian woman
that you ever saw on television, possibly.
Like ever?
Well, name someone else.
I don't, like I was a kid when I saw her.
So yeah, maybe, I don't know. Like, but yeah. I don't know like, I was a kid when I saw her, so yeah, maybe. I don't know.
Well, I don't know, but I don't know
except that it might be. That might be true.
Like, that might be the first South Asian.
I'm glad she's finally coming.
What much music personalities are you
missing at this point?
I want to talk to Sookie and Lee.
Right. That's an important one
for me. Yeah, so Sookie and Lee
and Monica Dio are, like like the two big ones I want to
talk to and Monica says for sure she's going to
do it but I want to tell you
my love and sass memory
I do remember her but she
was a city TV personality wasn't she
I think she did facts too
anyway what do you like
you do it first and then I'm going to tell you my memory
of love and sass that's a fucking great song yeah it's a good
song really good song it's a good song. Really good song.
It's a good song.
I remember watching,
I think it was a Juno awards and love in the SAS,
love and love and the SAS,
love and SAS were doing their thing and rocket Ishmael did a rap to it.
Okay.
So rocket Ishmael must be like 1991.
So 90s.
Wow.
So rocket Ishmael's rapping.
Well,
love and SAS.
And he goes,
um, and I remember it was,
so I guess Matt Dunnegan was the quarterback
and then he won a great cup.
That was a big 91 year maybe.
And then Matt Dunnegan moved on.
And we had, our quarterback was Ricky Foggy.
Ricky Foggy, of course.
So Rocket Ishmael's on, he's doing this rap.
And I only remember this from when it happened live.
I actually have never seen it.
I don't know if it's on YouTube or not.
But then Rocket Ishmael goes, ricky foggy hold that pass i'm on the mic
with love and sass nice rocket and that so i i heard this and then uh like every periodically
over the next you know 35 years to this day yeah i would break into ricky foggy hold that pass i'm
on the mic with love and sass.
Your two young children must totally
relate to this.
Now I got to explain who love and sass
is, who Ricky Foggy is,
who Rocket is. Show them the video of when
Rocket stomped on that guy's head.
Oh yeah.
Oh yeah.
He invented the curb stomp.
He seemed like a peaceful guy.
I think he was out of the league next year.
When he was
scoring a touchdown in that great cup game,
somebody throws a coke.
He was too fast, but somebody
throws a coke at him.
That one year, though, with like Bruce McDowell
and like a bearded John Candy
and Gretzky.
That was genuinely exciting.
I had legit Argo fever that year.
Amazing, right?
And apparently we're like 11.
I don't know.
Bob Ouellette's still a big Argo fan.
So he's like, oh, this is a great team.
And he's right.
I looked at the standings.
We're dominating.
Totally.
11-1.
I don't know what we are.
We're dominating.
But it's like if they could have 10% of what we had in 1991.
Let's name some guys.
Who are the guys?
Mike Pinball Clemens.
You got Paul Mazzotti.
You got the kicking tandem,
what was it?
Lance Chomik.
Right.
And Hank Elissick.
You're good at this.
Yeah, Harold Holman.
I used to be like a little into it.
Yeah, I was into it too. I used to watch it.
There was less to do back then.
We didn't have Raptors yet or anything. It was less going on. But well done. Yeah, I was into it too. I used to watch it. There was less to do. We didn't have Raptors yet
or anything. It was less going on, but
well done. Now name two players
on the current team.
Alright, moving on here.
Billy Joe...
I was going to say Billy Joe Tolliver. Who is that?
Oh, I don't know.
I can't even tell you. There's a guy in the Calgary
with like Billy Bob or something.
This next jam is by an FOTM. Do you want to say anything before I kick it know. I can't even tell you. There's a guy on the Calgary with like Billy Bob or something. This next jam is by an FOTM.
Do you want to say anything before I kick it out? I love
FOTM jams. This is a good example
of, I'll say
like an 80s,
this feels like a lane that 1236
would enjoy. This is like an 80s
CanCon artist
trying to morph his
sound into the 90s. We saw Gowan
I think attempt this when he went by saw Gowan, I think, attempt this
when he went by Lawrence Gowan.
That said, this is a great song.
All these songs I really like.
I quite like this song,
and this guy seems like a cool dude.
I always liked this guy's music from what I knew of it. Do you, do you, do you ever wonder why?
Do you, do you, do you ever wonder why?
Do you, do you, do you ever wonder why?
I don't know what color your eyes are, baby
But I'm alive
So, so, so alive
Which I love
Oh, love and sass and then love and rocking
So Barney Bento was in Bios
But you hear it, eh?
He was in Bios, totally
Good chorus
I wanna go where I wanna go it, eh? He was in bars, totally. Good chorus.
Dude, I remember this one, too.
This is a great song. Bar bentall do yeah it's got that uh well that love and rockets thing going on there totally also what is the uh
coca-cola who's the uh cherry coca-cola oh a savage garden interest savage garden vibe going
on too but that catchy as fuck.
Definitely very 90s production,
but I think it sounds great.
The video's a great shot of three guys,
like a big guitar solo.
Okay, so the Barney I talked to,
I can't believe this is him.
It's hard to reconcile.
This is not your 80s Barney.
This is your grungier Barney Bentle.
The Barney I know is like a farmer, man.
And he's kicking out the bluegrass country or something.
Listen to this guitar breakdown here.
This is real shit. It's a grunge song.
This is the part of the song that is really boring.
This is the part that gets really fast.
You know what this sounds like?
Collective Soul.
Like that sort of like Collective Soul.
Yeah, like sort of that.
Baby, let your light shine down.
But it's definitely a far cry from God's Something to Live For
and She's My Inspiration.
But I thought this was a cool song thought i'm enjoying these kirkland
brand okay so you've seen the vibe i'm going for with these and i'm two for four now so it's like
i'm batting 500 here do we have any reaction from the chat room does anyone care do i definitely
refresh here they're gonna be they've gone to sleep i think let me pop over and see here yeah
mf if you're out there say hello uh actually
i'd be curious if mf knows any of these songs i still feel like that cory hart song was a big
deal i know i don't know what it's just not ringing a bell that doesn't mean i didn't hear
it but some i do have this thing where if i don't like a song it's like when i hear it i'm out like
i don't know i just don't like a song and i tap out right away and i don't retain it that's fair
and then watch a video the videos again, he's in the desert.
Corey Hart in the desert.
He's sort of hitchhiking.
I was watching a lot of the video rotation on Much Music.
Like a lot in the late 80s.
I don't know what to say.
I would say about that Corey Hart song,
like his arc was really high peak
and like a pretty steep drop off in terms of popularity. That's not to say
he was not popular in the
90s. But he wasn't popular in the 90s.
But he was like a
big fucking deal and then really
with this album and I
think it was too mature. He wasn't doing
sort of the teeny bopper.
I always thought him in like sort of Duran Duran
like as sort of the heartthrobs of
Yeah, but Duran Duran had that nineties comeback,
right?
With a come undone and stuff like that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The ordinary world,
ordinary world.
That's the one.
Yeah.
Come undone by the way.
Also a,
a guess who song.
I was going to say,
those are perfect examples,
like eighties band morphing their song tonight.
Also like new order.
What's that song?
Regrets,
you know,
even the cure.
We talked about the cure. Like they, they seem to make a good transition, but none that song, Regrets. Even The Cure, we talked about The Cure.
They seem to make a good transition.
None of those are CanCon.
Okay, you want to kick out another one?
This next song, you had no clue
what this was, right? Even though this was on
CFNY. I can't remember.
Let me hear it and then I'll chime in.
Shout out to Liz Janik.
Not far off.
Not far off. Not far off. Yeah. Alice in Chains.
Yeah.
Some of that.
So this chorus is familiar to me,
but it sounds like a bunch of other songs I actually like.
I was going to say,
that's why I thought this would be a good pick because it sounds so much like so many other songs of that era.
There's an Alice in Chains song,
which is now bouncing around my head,
which has a similar vibe to this song.
Yeah, like kind of a grinding,
like kind of a band helmet or...
Not Angry Chair, but one of those jams.
Definitely like a grunge.
But anyway, the name of this band is the Morgan Fields.
The name of the song is Someday.
I feel like a lot of songs called Someday. Well, Mariah Carey has a big Sunday. Yeah, Someday. The Stro Fields. The name of the song is Someday. I feel like a lot of songs called Someday.
Well, Mariah Carey has a big Sunday.
Someday.
The Strokes, Someday.
Like there's just, there's a lot.
This I definitely remember hearing on CFNY when I first started listening.
I think this is a Langer jam.
I feel like Langer is going to pop into the chat.
Although he's 10 months behind and is listening.
But in 10 months, he'll go in the chat and show
us that he owns this cd the morgan field i i would like to know um who recognized it because this
this band according to some stuff i found online had like multiple songs on much music
um they had two albums something called thrash wall So here's the truth. So where are these guys from in Canada?
You know? They are from
somewhere in Ontario.
Okay, here's what fucks me up, okay?
What fucks you up? So this is an early
90s song. Yeah. Okay.
In the early 90s,
any Canadian alt-rock song
that smelled like grunge
I would dive into.
Like it was like catnip, okay?
This is a fact.
So it's like, I don't know why I didn't retain Morgan Fields.
Like I know listening to it now,
it's like it reminds me of much better songs.
Like I prefer the Moist song.
I prefer the Alice in Chains songs.
And those two songs kind of marrying up in here.
Like I just prefer those songs.
And I would say this probably didn't get a ton of spins.
It was definitely on CFNY, but I don't know
if this was ever in heavy rotation.
Do you know the name Alan Piggins?
Have you ever heard
this name? Lunch at Alan's,
of course.
With Mark Jordan, who I saw on Friday Night.
So Alan Piggins
is the lead singer for the Morgan Fields
so you're hearing but he
and actually I had all these other notes
I'm not sure what happened to them but
he did a lot of production work so he
actually he mixed the album
a soap bubble and inertia
but the Gondarvas
he did some stuff with
change of heart
I'm just reading his credentials here.
With one of his bands, he opened for Fugazi.
Yeah, okay.
Apparently, the kids in the hall were fans of the Morgan Fields.
Yeah, I mean, I'm putting this.
I'm going to find out later.
Like, this happened with another song.
I'm going to find out later.
I'm the only guy who doesn't remember the Morgan Fields.
Like I said, this guy has so many ties to so many other FOTMs.
He's worked with Blue Rodeo.
He's worked with Godspeed
You Black Emperor, if you can believe it.
His bio says he's toured
China three times. One time he played
to 8,000 people.
How about this? He guessed it on
a podcast called The Walrus Was
Paul. Okay, get out of here.
There you go. You perked up a bit
is over there you go anyway i think you should dig up alan piggins and have him on the podcast
aussie i feel like there's gonna be a lot of stuff down that song there just to break down all this
shit like all this stuff he's done because again this guy like touches many many i feel like i've
got these like i don't know. I need to see a shrink.
Your kids say Morgan and you don't even know.
I know.
You know what?
You're right.
I need to sit down with a psychotherapist and talk about these black holes in my life
that I blocked out.
And why?
Like, why did I block out the Morgan field?
Like, I'm actually concerned, Cam.
He seems like he's in like Kitchener area.
I did find an article from like the kitchener standard in like 2019
okay um so i think you could dig him i i feel like he'd have some good stories his bio's like
really all over the place like in good ways he seems like he's done a lot of stuff someday yeah
it's not not about my wheelhouse i feel like there's something wrong with me cam and thank
you for this this is quite an awakening because now i'm two for five i was gonna say that this
is i slotted this one as you remember the band uh zucker baby was in my original list i thought that's too well
zucker baby's too well known to be on this episode i thought it was very well known myself
so this is not a cam jam everybody radio head of calgary but this was a huge song
yeah this was like too popular i. I think people sort of remember this.
Yeah, I'm glad you bumped it.
We'll just let Zucker Baby...
Zucker Baby...
Sounds like Mark Zucker.
What can you say about Zucker Baby?
Yeah, I used to say that's such a rip off like the Benz era radio head.
Like, come on, Zuckerman. Well, that's Kirkland Brand, of course, like you said here. Okay.
That's a good song,
though.
I don't mind that song.
I'm now realizing
that I blocked
a whole morning
for Benjamin Mulrooney
and the night before
bailing like that.
That actually pisses me off.
That's been bailed.
Do you know
who the next guest
will now be?
Speaking of 90s,
this 90s,
great 90s music,
guess who my next guest will be?
It'll be Monday.
The highly anticipated Toronto Mike debut of...
I'm trying to think.
David Usher.
That's a good guess.
Yeah, who?
Eventually he'll be over here.
Who?
Hayden.
Oh my God.
Hayden makes his Toronto Mike debut Monday.
Well, tell us again,
fellow Thornley alumni,
Cam Gordon says,
says hi.
I got the Noah Mintz stuff pulled already.
I'm just worried,
you know,
get off black cars.
He's going to be like,
okay,
get off take.
Oh my God.
I have so many questions.
Like what was Thornley like?
And cause he's a,
she's probably like five years older than me.
Yeah.
Well,
he's whatever Noah is.
And I guess that's a Gian Gomeshi age.
So,
so have you,
you've talked about why, you know, Hayden, I don't know if that's like Gian Gomeshi age. So have you, you've talked about why,
you know,
Hayden,
I don't know if that's like private.
Uh,
it's not secret that his son,
his son and my son on the same soccer team.
So last Saturday was the weekend of champions.
So we were hanging out for the last time and now soccer season is over.
But yeah,
we saw a lot of each other became fast friends and he wanted to wait till like he had his lineup for his dream serenade at Massey Hall.
Right.
Something to promote.
I was at Massey Hall today.
But the FOTM Torquill Campbell is, him and his band Stars are headlining this event.
And the funny thing is, on Saturday, I'm hanging out, we're chatting and Hayden goes, he looks
up to me in all sincerity, he goes, Howard Jones that was the question like do you know of Howard Jones and
I'm like yeah and I start singing some Howard Jones he's like he's surprised that Howard Jones
was added to this bill and he was surprised at the number of people who just don't seem to know
Howard Jones do you think Howard Jones uh underappreciated what do you think about Howard
I think it's I I saw that too.
And I thought,
Oh,
that's interesting.
Although Howard Jones is,
he's doing like a solo acoustic tour of,
um,
Southern Ontario.
As we speak,
he was in,
I'll say like Kingston or something.
Uh,
Stu,
you probably know that Stu Stone's a massive Hojo fan.
I've seen him like multiple times.
As are the Pasternak boys.
Okay.
But yeah, I'm not, I'm not surprised people don't know Howard Jones
especially this kind of Hayden crowd
it's a different generation
it does seem like an odd fit
Howard Jones I feel like lives in Ontario
somewhere though I think Freddie P
told me he saw Howard Jones in a park
for free in Peterborough
yeah probably but yeah I mean he's got
you know,
all sorts of great singles.
Yeah, agreed.
Okay, so that was my last.
So yeah, Hayden making his...
Are you going to that?
Are you going to the Dream Serenade?
I haven't bought a ticket yet.
Will I be there?
I don't know, but I want to...
I kind of want to go.
I've never gone.
I actually got to know his daughter quite a bit
because actually this is a little beef I have
is that on weekends, cars are not allowed in allowed in high park this is a fairly new rule okay it's a highly
controversial rule but it really did kind of fuck over hayden's family a bit because getting hayden's
uh special needs daughter to these soccer games so she can watch her brother really do require
you get an automobile to the field and no cars allowed in High Park.
So she actually did not attend this
weekend of champions or whatever they
call it at High Park. And I was like, yeah, you know,
I'm a big cyclist. I love
getting these cars out of High Park, but
we need to make exceptions to make it
accessible for all
Torontonians,
including Hayden's daughter. That seems more than
especially, you know, if you're able to park in sort of a,
one of those like parking spots close to the building,
you should be able to like also drive in Hyde Park.
Yeah, so I was, I just realized that maybe sometimes
we go a little too far and you'd think
a bleeding heart Pingo like me might be like,
get the cars out of Hyde Park.
But I think there should be some exceptions.
Absolutely, as you mentioned the dream
serenade all I believe all
if not a good Porsche proceeds go to
yeah we're gonna get into it with Hayden
but yeah this is a this is
his daughter who I believe is 14 now
and she laughs
at my jokes I'm a big fan of anyone who laughs
at my jokes I'm a big fan and I got
to spend some time with her this summer
and dream serenade is a lovely accounting for taste but that's great just laugh at my jokes. I'm a big fan and I got to spend some time with her this summer and Dream Serenade
is a lovely cause.
No accounting for taste
but that's great.
Just laugh at my jokes.
Look forward to listening.
Are you ready?
I am.
I'm curious if you
remember this song.
Okay.
I'm curious if you
know all these songs.
See, I remember this song
so I'm back to
three for six
I believe that is.
Isn't that right?
Thank you. I imagine feelings mirrored in your eyes
It seems like heaven in my heart
Dreaming of your love
I know wishes can come true
And I'll be holding out for you
It's all I need To see me through
Oh, God
Send me a miracle
Send me a miracle
Cam, before you reveal who this is,
we have some breaking news in the live chat,
which is that Howard Jones recently opened for Culture Club.
That's right. And there
were a number of FOTMs at this
concert, including
Canada Kev and Leslie.
And they saw Stu Stone at the
concert, so he is a true
Hojo fan. He was at that concert.
Leslie
Bill. Is that Leslie Bill
or Leslie Villain? In this live chat,
she's Leslieville,
but I believe on Twitter she is Leslievillian.
Leslie.
Les.
Les. Because Carolyn Taylor, who's a great episode of Toronto Mike,
you should check out Carolyn Taylor.
She corrected me when I said Leslie.
It's Leslie.
She correctly points out Hojo lived in Ottawa as a kid,
much like Tom Cruise and a bunch of other people.
Um,
Tom Cruise.
Did he?
For like,
for a time he was online,
like he was on,
remember like Wiseball put together a list of like,
yeah,
like Keanu Reeves and the obvious one.
Yeah.
The guy,
um,
from the cult,
uh,
Ian Asbury,
Kamala Harris,
David Byrne.
There's,
there's also Elon Musk.
Elon Musk.
Well,
someone said,
uh,
Steph Curry.
Yeah. Which is a good one. Yeah. Cause Adele was here. Yeah. Absolutely's also Elon Musk. Elon Musk. Well, someone said Steph Curry, which is a good one.
Yeah, because Adele was here. Yeah, absolutely.
Paul Janz.
What happened to Paul Janz?
I feel like we haven't heard about Paul in a while. Paul Janz
had 15
top 100 singles in Canada.
Can you believe that?
I almost do because he seemed
to be ever present,
but that's a lot of singles.
I feel like he filled a very specific
but important lane in Canadian radio.
What lane was that?
Where he could be on AM Top 40 radio,
but also on easy listening.
I feel like he was also sort of big in Europe
and other markets.
This song is obviously sort of a Beach Boys influence in the chorus.
It's called Send Me a Miracle, Paul Janz.
I feel like we heard another Paul Janz song, I feel like, on an episode of Toast.
And you probably kicked it out.
You're a Janz fan.
Yeah, I think it was the song Every Little Tear.
Right.
And you do still hear some Paul J jans on uh boom 97.3
schools out soundtrack is there any paul jans on there or no just i don't think so paul jans i
believe went to he became a christian music that's why i lost touch with him yeah so here's what
here's the here i'm gonna bring this one back the esri geography corner love esri he's from a really small town alberta paul jans
called three hills there's only one person that i'd recognize who's also from there and i barely
remember this guy okay is it a sports figure it's a sport yeah it's gonna be a hockey player totally
someone associated with hockey okay uh who is it al mckinnis no it's bill peters yeah he used to
coach the flames and and the Hurricanes.
Right.
Bill Peters.
My only other note
about Paul Jancy
sort of looked like
Mick Hucknall
from Simply Red.
Of course, Simply Red.
Kind of had the curly hair,
sort of a toe head,
ginger.
But hey,
had a lot of hits.
This is a fun song.
Send me a miracle.
Again,
remember hearing this
very specifically on 680 CFTR.
I remember that
song as well. So I'm back in the, I feel
like I'm batting 500 again here, but
yeah, Three Hills, Alberta.
I'm just checking it out. I went to the wiki page
for Bill Peters. Do you see Paul Jantz
on there? Let me click through here.
Famous people from Three Hills, Alberta.
Notable
people. Okay, so Phil Calloway, who's a humorist.
I do not know Phil Calloway.
Erica Durant is an actress who was in Smallville.
Okay, that's a big deal.
Yeah, and in Saving Hope as well, Dr. Alex Reed.
Saving Hope, don't know what that is.
Or Ryan's Hope.
I remember Ryan's Hope.
My mom watched that a lot.
I'm a watcher too.
Okay, well, moms were watching a lot of soap opera my mom loved uh another world that was her jam and i
actually grew up knowing characters in another world and they had a guy like a little person
named walling wallingford i think that one become mystical like they're like some wizards or one
got really weird paradise or passions passions yeah okay so that one I didn't know. But I do remember Cass Winthrop,
and I remember this little person.
We didn't call him a little person back then.
They all grew up in Three Hills.
Josh Pelland is a competitive paracyclist.
Okay, from Three Hills.
From Three Hills.
And then, of course, Paul Janz and Bill Peters.
Okay.
Very interesting.
Who's more famous, do you think, objectively? Paul Janz. Paul Janz. From Three Hills. And then, of course, Paul Janz and Bill Peters. Okay. Very interesting. Who's more famous, do you think, objectively?
Paul Janz.
Paul Janz.
Paul Janz is more famous.
Yeah, worldwide, for sure.
He's a big deal here.
What do you think the population of this Three Hills is?
I'd say 6,900 people.
That's a good guess.
Yeah, how much?
When I see a number like this,
maybe because I was born and raised in Toronto.
So it's like,
I look at this number and I think,
that's the number of people
that will be at Mimico Arena on Saturday
for the evaluation I'm taking Jarvis to.
3,042 people.
Like 3,000 people.
I think we can get 3,000 people to TMLX 14.
From that tiny 3,000 person town.
Does the mayor do other stuff?
Like he can't have a full-time job looking after these 3,000 people, right?
And yet, like Bill Peters and Paul Jans.
Yeah, they're punching above their weight.
Yeah, good for them.
And way for you to dismiss that humorist, Phil Calloway.
He wrote 25 humorous books.
How many have you written?
I don't laugh, so I wouldn't know.
Do you have a book in you, Cam Gordon?
Is there a book inside of you?
I think we've talked about it.
I don't know if we did it in public.
Maybe we haven't, but yeah,
it's still working.
I am dusting it off.
Am I still going to be quoted in it?
You'll be in the mix.
Here's a little clue. I'm speaking to an FOTM
tomorrow for some advice
on this project. I can't believe you have
a meeting of Mark Weisblatt.
I'll tell you off, Mike.
His name is Stu Stone. It's got to be Michael
Barclay. I've tied with
Barclay before. Barclay told me I should write a book
and I realized I have a great book in me and you're
not going to get it. By the way, The Spoon's got a
shout out in his newsletter today.
Uh,
he,
he thought they should be nominated for like a Polaris,
uh,
legends prize.
I forget what they call it.
There's like a,
you know,
the players prize or sort of the section that's carved out for like classic
albums.
And he thought the spoon should get nominated.
Uh,
he's a smart cookie that Barclay,
uh,
he knows what he's,
uh,
he knows what he's talking about.
I'll say this. I want to give a shout out to his newsletter. Honestly, it's what he's talking about. I'll say this.
I want to give a shout out
to his newsletter.
Honestly, it's the best place
to find concert listings
for folks of our generation.
It is very good.
Because you can't find that
anywhere else.
The Thursday edition
has the most robust list
of concert listings.
Oh, I did see Michael Holland
on Friday night.
Michael Holland.
No relation to Jennifer, right?
No, no.
But he's trying to bring that back to his new venture, Next.
Like the concert listings?
Yeah.
He wants to resurrect the Now Magazine concert listing in Next.
That would be a valuable service.
But Michael Barclay does a great job.
Yeah.
I used to look at the Soundscapes website, but they're out of business now.
So yeah, it's getting harder and harder.
BlogTO sort of used that.
It's hard out there for us. It is.
There's no money to make a list of Gen X
concerts. You know what bugs me? No one does anything
anymore unless there's money in it.
And not just a little money to cover the cost or
whatever, but unless there's like, oh, there's real dollars
in it. People just, they don't
happen. I think that's, like, that
just tells you there's no passion behind the project.
Why can't people ever do stuff
for blood, sweat, and tears
and a few bucks and then not
get rich off it?
Times are tough out there.
I don't know. It's getting harder and harder
to live in the city.
Yeah, he's bringing it home.
Yeah, once I wolf that down,
we'll be back to square one.
So mentions in books, I just want to say that I got
my copy of Bill Wilichka's new book
and then I was interviewing him at the
Rex.
What's it called? Like Lovable Has Been or
something? Yeah, something like that.
And he, I'm
in it. Like I'm not in the book, but I'm in
the quotes about the author section.
Like I'm right there with
Kevin Shea and all these
others. I actually saw like a promo video for
it. It was in Kingston. It was shot with a drone.
Like a drone zooming into
Bill Belichick. Am I in that too?
I did not see you in that. Paul Jans. I can't believe
Paul Jans was just kicked out. Okay.
I'm loving this. Are you going to come back?
Is it just 100 and out? Of course.
You just wanted to get to that milestone? No, no, no. I'll be back.
Like when Robbie Alamore sat out
on the last day of the season
because he was batting 299.68 or whatever.
I feel like we don't talk about him.
We've erased Robbie Alomar.
We don't talk about that guy.
The greatest Spoojay position player of all time.
Erased.
All right.
Well, let's move on to happier things.
This is a recording.
It will not be repeated.
This is a recording.
This is a recording.
It's the flavor. Life sa recording. It's the flavor.
Life saver.
It's the flavor.
What we're going to do here is go way back. Little Tommy from Sugar Street
He had a problem, he didn't eat
And when his mother said she'd be right back
Then little Tommy fell through the family crack
Where is the justice?
Don't get me wrong
I've got gratitude when it belongs
I just wanna know
He's got to know me Where it all began
And where it's gonna go
Hey, hey
I wanna know
I wanna know
Like, where did you hear this song?
This was a big Much music hit.
This I heard on The Hog.
Exactly.
It was like 40.
Early 90s.
This might have even been on Tarzan Dan, the hit list.
He was on The Hog.
Yeah, he was there.
Yeah.
And again, this is another one I feel like you said you have no recollection of this.
I don't remember this song.
The name of the artist is John James.
The name of the song is I Wanna Know.
Very much of the era of D-Lite, Groove is in the Heart.
Can you kind of hear that?
I feel like this had a very D-Lite-ish video,
but also it was kind of like the video of Technotronic, Pump Up the Jam.
Well, there's almost like an acid test Yaz type vibe.
I think he was sort of like a retro futurist. Well, there's almost like, I don't know, like an acid test Yaz type vibe.
And he was sort of like a retro futurist.
Like he kind of had the big, big floppy hat and stuff.
Sean James.
Yeah, the name of the album this came from was Big Fat Soul.
He sort of dressed like Remy Shand.
Do you remember that guy?
Yeah, of course, of course.
I remember Remy Shand, one and out.
Like I think he didn't release a follow-up.
John James did have other singles.
He had a song called
Trust Me.
I say that,
that was like the chorus.
Trust me,
I trust you.
Anything?
Do you remember that one?
Like, I feel,
like now I feel shame.
Like, how do I not remember
John James?
Well, if you were watching
the 1991 June Awards, you would have seen John James. I just remember John James? Well, if you were watching the 1991 Juno Awards,
you would have seen John James.
I just remember Rocket Ishmael
shouting out Love and Sass and Ricky Foggy.
Double J was nominated for
Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year
and Dance Recording of the Year for this song.
I understand the dance recording,
but male vocalist?
There's not a lot of...
Well, this is the most promising.
Okay, okay. So I don't know.
Maybe he's up against like wild tea in the spirit.
I see now he was an attic guy, so...
That was on
my fun fact. Oh, I'm not going to shut up then.
I just made a mistake of going to the
wiki page, but I want you to do your fun fact.
Yeah, well, he was an attic guy.
Not he was an attic.
He was on the label.
I'm not an addict.
I feel alright.
Shout out to the late Al Mayer.
Is that the name?
Alexander Mayer.
F-O-T-M.
Al Mayer.
Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
And also the other one
whose name I'll dig up in a minute,
but his partner who started Addict Record
died like last month.
That's right.
Maybe in September. I'll dig it That's right. Maybe in September.
I'll dig it up.
John James from Woodstock,
the Skibby and Esri Geography Corner Part 2.
Where is Woodstock?
Like not New York, like Ontario.
That's a little bird on Charlie Brown.
Not that one either.
Tom Williams.
Okay, so Attic Records was founded in 1974
by FOTM Alexander Mayer and Tom Williams, who just
passed away.
They're both gone now.
And Attic was like Weird Al.
It was Maestro.
There's a lot of surprising numbers because Kevin Shea, the aforementioned, coincidentally
enough, and there's a few different cats who've come on and talked Attic, including Alexander
Mayer himself. but Maestro Fresh West
was famously... I think Chalk Circle
was that? No, but Lee Aaron, who was
at the event I was at,
although I left before she arrived, but
Triumph is another big one.
Teenage Head, The Nylons.
All over the map. A lot of range.
And John James. And I just wrote about
this on TorontoMic.com, but
Katrina and the Waves.
Right.
That song, that was originally,
they're like a British band or something,
but that was originally a Attic distributed single.
And then when they went to a big label and re-recorded it,
and it's the re-recording of Walking on the Sunshine.
That was the big hit.
But the original cut of Walking on Sunshine sunshine which was a hit in canada yeah was an attic records uh release
so no attic no karina honestly no attic no walking on sunshine okay anyway john james from woodstock
two other people we got uh jake muzzin assistant captain do you care about the leafs this year
he's in what we call Robidoux Island.
He's a guy, he just won't
play anymore. He's done.
Is he really? Yeah, Jake Muzzin, I don't think
will play this year. Who's that guy, Jeffrey
Lupo? Yeah, he was on
Robidoux. Yes, exactly. Lupo, who
was a handsome mofo. I believe
Monica said he looked like Superman.
Jeffrey Lupo is a
good example. So Jake Muzzin's on long-term DL.
I think he
goes on some long-term injury
thing and then we don't have that go against him.
He's from Woodstock. And another name,
I always wonder, could this be an
FOTM? Just bear with me.
Garth Turner.
Explain.
It's not typically where I go, but I remember
Garth Turner. Yeah, Garth Turner. So you asked a a good question like where the hell is woodstock and i was thinking
like i feel like i know woodstock but i would say it's between branford home of the great one
and london ontario like that's just between the two is where you would find woodstock
so it's like uh south of like a kitchener but yeah just uh that sounds about right i would
have thought it was a bit closer to like toronto but i really have no fucking clue yeah i do a
drive every summer to uh grand bend ontario which means i kind of that's where i kind of go through
stratford and i might go like right by saint mary's for example sure then i make my way
to yeah exactly to lake huron so like i kind of see a lot of names like that on that but but uh St. Mary's, for example. Sure. Then I make my way to... Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Yeah, exactly.
To Lake Huron.
So I kind of see a lot of names like that on that.
But yeah, this is... You know what's just south of there is Tilsonburg.
Tilsonburg, sure.
And my back hurts every time I hear that name.
There you go.
Shout out to Mike Epple, who is famously from Tilsonburg, Ontario.
Okay, very cool. These are all
some great fun facts here. Well, Toronto Mike,
I think it's shocking that
the next artist is only the second
artist
who appeared on Tane that we're hearing.
I believe Corey Hart was on Tane?
Absolutely.
As a soloist.
This person was also a soloist on Tane.
Again,
do you know this song?
I feel a lot of pressure now
to know these songs.
I feel like I should
fucking fake it. The sun and the moon were bright Take one away
Two holy sisters
Lost in the desert dry
From the weight the old mule will die
Take one away
Oh, mama, sit down
I think it's time you knew
The day I first came to you
I was dead on arrival
And now I can hear you
Pleading on the radio
Mama, I've joined the church, you know And now I can hear you pleading on the radio.
Mama, I've joined the church, you know.
I've been passing out Bibles.
Take one away.
It's not ringing a bell.
I know.
I don't know again. No, I don't know what to say. This one is know. I don't know again.
No, I don't know what to say.
This one is reasonable that you wouldn't know it. Take One Away, an anti-drug anthem from Burden Cummings,
former member of The Guess Who.
This is from a 1989 album called Plus Signs.
Believe it or not, this was a number 16 hit.
So 89?
Yes.
This is a great example of an artist.
This is the first time I knew who this was, hearing this song.
I had no idea who the guest who was.
Wow.
I'd never heard Stand Tall or...
Not even American Woman.
I don't think so.
Like, we just didn't listen to that shit, like, growing up.
Like, it was all, like, show tunes or, like, the chum countdown.
So it's like we were more like a top 40 Andrew Lloyd Webber,
the wrestling album, Raffy type house.
Like, that was our jams.
But, again, there was a video for this on Much Music.
I'm like, you're some old guy.
Again, all this is about, like, about like an anti-drug song.
But a lot of the old guys who had these late 80s hits,
I'm thinking of Leonard Cohen and Neil Young, right?
Like these were big jams.
I probably still know all the words to Leonard Cohen and Neil Young
in their late 80s hits or whatever.
But I don't know what to tell you, man.
I must have flipped that channel
from 29 maybe to 30
to see if Gino Retto was
on TSN. Probably, yeah.
Also, I think it's funny. We call them old guys.
These guys were probably like 37 at the time.
Like at least 10 years
younger than we are. When Lightfoot died,
when Gordon Lightfoot died, Mark Weisblot
kicked out a song that was like a 80s. When Lightfoot died, when Gordon Lightfoot died, Mark Weisblot kicked out a song
that was like a 80s hit for Lightfoot
that I completely 100% remember hearing all the time.
Like it was like, oh my God.
I remember this.
I remember that song.
But this one,
do you remember a song?
Hey, hey, get out of my way.
I just came from the USA.
No? I feel like that's just came from the USA. No?
I feel like that's...
By Gordon Lightfoot.
No.
That'd be weird.
But it's just as weird as Bird and Cummings.
Hey, hey, get out of my way.
I just came from the USA.
So, sorry, Bird and Cummings said that.
Yeah.
No, I don't.
It's just ironic.
He's from
Winnipeg
yeah for sure
do you remember
the issue
with birding
Cummings in the
dance studio
in Moose Jaw
yeah it was
making too much
noise
I do remember
this
okay
that was gonna
be a fun
for those of you
don't know
I think that was
big news
yeah it was
there was a
Canadian press
article CBC
article in
2019
birding Cummings lives in Moose Jaw which I think is amazing right There was a Canadian press article, CBC article in 2019.
Bernie Cummings lives in Moose Jaw,
which I think is amazing.
He was complaining about too much noise from a dance studio.
Kyra Klassen, the owner of Kyra's Dance Fitness Studio,
was fined $150.
It's like literally a guy.
Think of that part of American women.
And that guy's complaining there's too much noise. it's like literally a guy like think of that part like American woman like
like that and that guy's
complaining there's too much noise like really
like come on
yeah
it's like okay okay boomer
come on like John come to like like
Kira's dance studio just for fun I
zipped over to Moose Chaw's
Wikipedia page to see the notable
people from Moose Jaw.
And it's a lengthy list.
That's a place that has produced some...
Who we got?
Oh my God.
All hockey players.
There's a lot of hockey players on here.
But in addition to that,
did you know Earl Cameron,
the broadcaster Earl Cameron is from?
I don't know Earl Cameron.
You don't remember?
I think you might know better the SCTV parody.
Shout out to Brock Linehan.
But Eugene Levy would play Earl Cannon Bear.
Do you remember this at all?
No.
Well, Burt in Cummings is from Moose Jaw.
Is he from Moose Jaw, Richard?
Yeah.
Really?
This is why he ends up, you know, like cats.
Are you sure?
Well, Wikipedia is telling me so.
I might need to do a fact check.
You know how cats go back to where they're like,
where they were born to die or whatever?
Yeah.
Do you know Adam Hadwin?
Yes, the golfer.
Big, successful PGA golfer.
That's a big deal.
That's a big one, right?
Clark Gillies, the late great Clark.
Okay, sure.
My mind's about to blow.
Peter Zowski's from Moose Jaw.
Whoa.
All right, now it has, you know what?
Not necessarily.
Okay, it says.
Or they live there.
I now think we're getting fucked over.
This is like notable people because it goes...
This is a shitty list
that I'm going to abandon
this little thing
because this is Clark...
No, it says Peter Zowski
resided in Moose Jaw in 1957.
Go fuck yourself, Wikipedia.
For one year.
Probably for two months.
He was, I don't know,
doing some kind of Moose Jaw...
His apprenticeship or something.
Because then I go...
Oh my God.
An FOTM that I wanted to talk to you about actually is from Moose John.
Oh,
who's that?
Fergie Oliver.
That's right.
Oh my God.
Did you listen to the Fergie Oliver?
I want,
I was so,
this is why I liked it when you and Stu came over every month.
I wanted to talk to you.
Of course I listened.
Um,
I mean,
there's so much stuff I'd love to unpack,
but the fact that you sort of built up to,
you know,
the question that everyone was waiting about his reaction did you think i might skip it because
stew would have skipped it he told me but did you were you 100 sure i was going there you'd go in
for the kill and when he can you smell it coming uh he's coming well he's building it up when i
pun intended when he used that word um cocksucker yeah yeah which is not not not a word he should use but
i mean like he's besmirched the good name of fergie oliver oliver there's no i in there
carrie was at tmlx 13 what i get though like fergie oliver oh my god i know i can't believe
it like he was there and we talked and uh i don't think you'll find him making many other media
appearances between him and like when you had harold hosanna on saying what do you say he'd and we talked and I don't think you'll find him making many other media appearances.
Well, between him
and like,
when you had
Harold Hossein on,
do you say he'd never
done like an interview
about his career?
Yeah, he said he's never
ever talked about his career.
That is unfucking
believable.
And this is like an 84-year-old
Harold Hossein.
And he's a fucking legend.
Harold Hossein.
Agreed.
Yeah, like just,
not just sort of like
a trailblazer,
you know,
someone who's not just like Millie Dwight guy. Although he took a shot at weather presenters who aren't meteorologists, just sort of like a trailblazer you know someone who's not just like
weather presenters who aren't meteorologists just like he took a shot at them and called
them ripping reeds or whatever and kim mcdonald dear friend of carrie oliver but 25 years or
something at the weather network is such a weather presenter who's not a meteorologist
and i'm not sure she would felt wonderful about that. But God, yeah. I mean, what did you just,
the fact that you get all these folks
to agree to hop on the mic is a real skill.
You know, it does take a lot of effort, you know,
because I got to be like,
I walk that line between like annoying AF
and like passionate persistence.
Like it's a very delicate balance.
Totally, totally.
It's very delicate.
You've mastered it.
I mastered it.
And I find these ways in. I mean, with Harold,
I found out somebody who knew his daughter.
Ah, and that's how I got Fergie.
I had to wine and dine
Fergie's daughter, and then I
got Fergie. Are there other sort of vintage
city, like Lara De
Batista, or
Jojo Chinto?
I'm actively working on Jojo
right now. Does he live in Hamilton?
Like when I was at McMaster, I feel like he lived there.
Like in Westdale.
I don't know where he lives, except I am actively pursuing Jojo Chinto.
Jojo Chinto.
But yeah, Batista is a good one because she was actually host of Here and Now for a while.
Yeah, she was on CBC for a long time.
And then they went in a different direction with FOTM Jill Deegan, who I hope is okay because I never hear her on the radio anymore. I just hope she's okay because she's lovely. Okay. Absolutely. And then they went in a different direction with FOTM Jill Deegan, who I hope is okay because I never hear her on the radio anymore.
I just hope she's okay because she's lovely.
Okay.
Absolutely.
Cam Gordon, your penultimate Kirkland brand CanCon jam.
Are you ready?
Anything to say?
This one's almost the name of a 1990s WWF tag team.
Woo!
Yeah.
Doesn't help me at all. I'm the boy who opens his heart to this life Oh Lord have mercy
It'll bruise you, break you, make you cry
Then you'll wake up to a clear blue sky
With no rhyme or reason to the reason why
Oh Lord have mercy
I'm a man on a mission is the name of the song.
Not to be confused with Men on a Mission,
the two-time WWF Tag Team Champion.
Do you remember those guys?
No.
Moe, Oscar was the manager, and Mabel was the big guy later, Viscera.
This is after your time.
You're not going to remember that.
This song, I feel like we talked about this years ago.
You don't remember this.
This was a more mixed 99.9.
Even listening to this now,
once I hear three or four chords of this song, I'm out.
I have no recollection of this song.
Who's the artist?
The artist is called Hemingway Corner.
I feel like this song's from...
Because Hemingway lived in Toronto.
He wrote at the Toronto Star. He did. He did. But I feel like this song... Oh, because Hemingway lived in Toronto. He wrote at the Toronto Star.
He did. He did. But I feel
like this is one of those songs similar to
Morgan Fields. This song feels
pretty easy to place when it
came out. Like early...
I think early 90s, kind of like Rusted
Root and sort of...
Not Toad the Wet Sprocket,
but kind of like the
adult alternative
what if format.
Now, Man on a Mission,
right? Not Man in the Mirror.
Not Man on the Mirror, no.
These guys...
Am I allowed to say Man in the Mirror is a
kick-ass pop song? Can I say that?
Am I allowed to say it? Yeah.
Because you didn't want to talk about Robbie Alomar earlier.
Yeah, well, if everyone who did bad stuff was cancelled,
we couldn't kick out any jams
because I feel like a lot of musicians are problems.
This song, number 11 in Canada.
Can you believe it?
Yeah, people like shitty stuff.
I think bland crap is popular.
Okay.
The guys from Hemingway Corner.
Were you part of this conversation?
It's 10 years since
uh magic's rude was the number one song on the book yeah yeah i saw that chat and there was an
article somewhere about like being the yeah you have no opinion on this no being like uh the best
bad song or something like that like it's a objectively terrible song but it's still like
it's you can still sing it like i can sing that song yeah I can see why that got popular
I'll just say that
a couple of like quick
fun facts Hemingway Corner was a duo
this is one of those weird
like these guys were actually from Atlanta
but somehow ended up in Toronto
David Martin and
Johnny David Marston who was
at that event I believe I didn't see him because I
had to leave and pick up my shitty children.
David Marsden.
I love the way your brain works.
It's like this guy's name
sounds like this other guy's.
Say the name again.
David Marden.
David Marden or 10?
Marden.
Marden.
Like see Marden.
You do what I do, buddy.
I get criticized
because my T's turn into d's they're like
who's marty streak and i'm supposed to be marty you're supposed to have the t you do it too well
you know why you say bachman not backman that's why i like let me let me say this you know why
you should recognize the name dave martin because he wrote some songs for edwin i'm gonna see him
in november uh i will ask him his memories of d Martin, who wrote his big hit, Alive.
Do you want to hear?
Oh, my God.
I like Alive.
There you go.
Yeah.
There's a lot of Alive.
Hemingway Corner guy wrote that.
Okay.
I'm excited to hear that, but I want to read to you breaking news in the live chat.
Yeah.
12.36 has arrived.
I think he just woke up from his nap and he popped over to hear what Cam Gordon has to
say.
He has to say.
He must remember Heming there he goes he said
hemingway court hemingway corner was two guys trying to make it as a singer as singer songwriters
who were paired together as a group because that's the way these things were played in 1993
probably yeah did you do you remember a neil young album called Borrowed Tunes
these guys were on Borrowed Tunes
and Head were on it
they did Look Out For My Love
that got some CFNY spins
yeah Noah Mintz is going to come up on Monday
because you know he was singing Take
for 1236
tell us what you know about John James
yeah let us know about John James
he's got like 6 John James fun facts let us know what you know about John James yeah let us know about John James he's got like six
John James fun facts let us know
what you know about John James I want to know by
John James right okay
so we've assigned a homework
to 12 people okay before we kick out the
final jam I just want to say
how happy I am that
you have returned you are like the prodigal
son thank you it's long
overdue I say this again with 100% sincerity.
It's great to be back.
And definitely won't be the last time.
Will you ever leave me again, Cam?
No.
I certainly need to ask you about your tape deck over there.
What do you want to know about it?
You haven't been here in 11 months.
I have many questions.
Any questions?
There's a lot of shit over there.
I'm going to play the jam and then we're going to fucking go.
So maybe now is the time to ask your question.
Let's save that for the next time.
Again, I'll be back.
I need to save some material for next time.
The only fun fact Wiseblood has is the one we've already covered,
which was that he was with Signed to Attic.
He was signed to Attic, yeah.
He also did some stuff with Con Can, like the band Con Can.
I know, of course.
Yeah.
Big time, yeah.
He made, he was like wiseblood said a male version
of lisa loheed that that's a good one i i actually considered some uh lisa oh it's six nothing jays
um well we'll clinch tonight right there you go yeah i actually did consider bringing some lisa
loheed uh world i think world vibe or world Party, the band. Yeah, that's not Canadian either.
I went to John James University.
Okay, last jam.
Last jam, I'm going to set up two ways.
This is Big Mike.
All right.
This is a one-time trio.
All three of these artists sang on Tane.
I'm glad I'm sitting down because I'm feeling weak on the knees
just even imagining
a trio where they're all singing on Tane
and this was
one of our favorite topics when we talk about
CanCon what's the Canadian version
of whatever
this was a song
I saw on Much Music and even though i was like 10 years old i'm like
this is the fucking canadian version of the traveling wilburys right wow
okay do you remember this song okay let's hear it do you remember this
it's not spirit of the West. Sing your song.
I saw Alan Pru today.
Alan Pru.
Alan Pru.
He saw me in the elevator and he said,
You gave me the lasagna.
Did he really say that? Yeah, that's what he said.
Not what I want.
Not what I deserve.
May the company not fall a single curve.
By the way, this is the best recording I could find.
That's how popular this fucking song is.
Some VHS copy of a much music playing.
May I tell no lies.
If I can't go on.
Give me strength to try.
Bring the old year out.
Bring the new year out. Bring the new year
in. Bring us all
good luck.
Let the good guys
win. Bring the
old year out.
Bring the new year in.
You, me, and Stu should sing this song together.
We should. A charity sing-along.
Let the good
guys win.
All right.
I'll give you my,
I'll tell you the honest to God truth.
If I know this song.
Yes.
Okay.
So the song.
Give it to me straight.
The song's like a standard or something,
but this version.
What?
Yeah.
I don't think this is like.
Okay.
Okay.
We have to do a fact check on that.
I'll let that slide for now, but a shout out to the Google. No, isn't it like a fact check on that. I'll let that slide for now.
But shout out to the Google.
No, isn't it like a...
Isn't that a...
Anyway, I do not know this.
Let the good guys win.
I do not know this.
No?
No?
I don't know about that, dude.
You talk and I'll Google.
Let the good guys win.
So we've got, again, a trio of CanCon greats.
The first artist here, there was Paul.
Oh, my God.
Sorry, not Paul.
Murray McLaughlin.
And they had a little Tom Cochran.
Wow.
And they had Paul Hyde of the Paolas and Rock and Hyde fame.
Yeah, right.
This is not a standard.
I'm thinking of when the good guys win.
Okay.
I don't even know what that is.
Again, video that did get quite a bit of spins on MuchMusic from what I recall.
It was a big rip-off of the
Handle Me With Care video.
They were like in a barn.
This song was actually a charity
single for UNICEF.
Halloween
is coming. Get your tickets to Pumpkins
After Dark. I used to get those
pennies from UNICEF in the UNICEF box.
So this song was actually written by Murray McLaughlin.
It says,
There's a Christmas gift to the people of Capitol Records.
They decided to record it, give some proceeds to UNICEF.
This is a random, interesting, fun fact.
The cassette single was designed, like the artwork,
was designed by Ralph Alfonso.
FOTM Ralph Alfonso to F-O-T-M Ralph Alfonso, the UCAM, Gordon.
That's right. He was also the original manager
of Karina and the Waves.
Katrina and the Waves? Katrina.
Karina and the Waves, yeah.
That's another, that's like a Kirkland brand
offshoot. So again, all three guys were in
Tane, and then obviously I
had to go on a little Tane deep dive.
Love it. I had no idea that like Paul Hyde co-wrote Tears or Not Not.
Oh, because it was the West Coast contingent, right?
Sure, yeah.
Bruce Allen.
Jim Valance.
Brian Adams.
Like, that whole...
I just see Terry David Mulligan watching it.
Not a single mention or frame of Terry David Mulligan in the New Much Music document.
Honestly, that's appalling.
That's appalling.
I know that not everyone can be in it.
No, I know.
Because there's a special episode
of Toronto Mike next week
with the first female VJ.
Right.
Who has a bone to pick with Erica,
who I was chatting up on a couch today,
Erica M, and we were talking about it.
Did you mention this to her?
Yes.
Of course I did.
I said, oh, Erica,
guess who I'm talking
to on Tuesday? And we had
a private convo. Such a provocateur.
I wanted
to hear her thoughts on it because
Catherine McClanahan
feels like it was
implied in the documentary. Unlike
the Barenaked Ladies fact, which was just a
wrong, this was
never explicitly stated the doc never
said Erica M was the first
female this doc and seems like
you're the one like shaking up the ant farm
like just like all this
like shit Aminar needs me to sell
but now you're doing all this like shoulder
content
what was Erica M's reaction to that
I don't want to share
I'll tell you afterwards.
But we had a very heartfelt adult conversation.
What is... Oh, I just realized something's hanging on me.
I just realized I am wearing...
I had no idea this was on me because I just felt it when I was leaning back.
What does that...
I've seen that before.
I read the liner notes.
This is my...
Oh, that's because of the Molly Johnson.
Is that like an Eric Alpert thing?
This media thing?
No, no. Oh, so you have of the Molly Johnson. Is that like an Eric Alpert thing? This media thing? No, no.
Oh, so you have a lanyard on.
I actually applied to get a media pass
for Canada's Walk of Fame.
Wow.
You've really made it there.
So I just thought for fun,
like for shits and giggles,
I went online and just said,
I'm Toronto Mike from Toronto Miked
and I would like to cover the red carpet.
Sure.
Again, I saw some bands I like
were going to be there.
They said yes. And then I had a reserve spot on the red carpet sure again i saw some uh bands i like we're gonna be there they said yes like and then i had a like a reserve spot on the red carpet for toronto mike
like this is where we're at in 2023 i know but like this is where entertainment tonight canada
i was gonna say like you know with the old year out the new year in like we just heard it there
let the good guys win um why are you surprised by that? That's not shocking at all. That's not shocking at all.
A guy in his basement just starts a thing,
an independent thing,
and suddenly he's there with,
you know,
I don't know if Entertainment Tonight Canada was there,
but he's right there.
Like I was right there.
Who was doing the PR for this?
I don't really know.
I was tipped off.
It's like rocket PR.
I was tipped off.
Not that he had anything to do with it,
but I was tipped off that this event was happening by David K kines who who wrote me an email and just said hey you should
come to this because he saw all these fotms so this was the media day for i think they're putting
these guys in the canadian rock and roll hall of fame so the bands like one by one prism was there
okay so like the bands like let's say for Glass Tiger. So Glass Tiger walks the red carpet.
Yeah.
And then they get a moment where everyone's snapping photos of them or whatever.
And I was at my place at the red carpet where I'm supposed to interview them.
Like people were lined up to interview Glass Tiger.
But I realized I actually don't want to interview anyone at this fucking thing.
I come to my basement if you want to talk.
So I just ended up like chatting with them a little bit and taking like a selfie and stuff.
You know what I mean?
And a lot of presenters were there, which were a lot of radio djs so like like stew jeffries and
may pods and liz janik and ingrid schumacher and roger ashby and i heard that david marzen was
going to be there but i did not actually see him there uh michael williams eric m like you know
that you know these are the people that were also there so yeah that's uh anyway i forgot i was
wearing my pass so for our photo but it's kind of exciting
that Toronto Mike had a media pass for this
fucking thing like I think that's you're not
surprised I'm surprised
oh can I say one more thing where's the bar
is Cambrio gonna get a media pass for
these things now I maybe
well I say one more thing about that last
jam we heard yeah
I need more I need to talk about 1236
calls it just funny you know i need more i need to talk about 1236 calls it uh see shanty just funny um
you know what it also reminds me of it's like an irish like an irish thing do you remember the song
god what was it called um all for one all for love staying brian adams and rod stewart
from robin hood robin hood prince of that was a big hit. From Robin Hood. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
That was a big hit.
Is that what it was from?
Come singing all for me.
Actually.
Oh, everything I do,
I do for you is from Robin Hood.
Okay.
What was Zorro maybe?
Three Musketeers?
Yeah.
Or like.
Something like that.
Anyways, a big hit.
From Zorro.
From the Zoros.
Three Musketeers.
Yeah.
I don't think.
I think you're right.
I think it was Three Musketeers.
Because Robin Hood was everything I do,
I do it for you. Three Musketeers. That was you're right. I think it was Three Musketeers. Because Robin Hood was everything I do, I do it for you.
Three Musketeers.
That was a good jam.
My sister had the single.
So you think that one-off single,
which the only rip on YouTube
is some crappy old VHS
that a Kirkland brand version
of Retro Ontario ripped to MP4
and uploaded to YouTube.
You think that's the Traveling Wilburys?
I would say let the good guys
win and take one away by burton cummings i only saw in much music and again these guys were probably
like in their late 30s but regardless just so different than the music of today like you never
hear anybody in their late 30s like on on like top 40 radio or like if something like much music
existed um that that was even like viable like i was radio or like if something like much music existed that that was even
like viable like I was like 10 years old
I'm watching fucking burning coming
sing some anti-drug song take one away
like I probably like recording
it on it like a VHS cassette so I could like
watch it at my own leisure
here's what I learned from your return
here after 11 months here
I mean I'm you know what I had
an episode tomorrow that got cancelled do you want to come'm, I'll, you know what? I had an episode tomorrow
that got canceled.
Do you want to come back tomorrow?
I'll just stay here.
