I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me this week to kick out the jams is radio broadcaster Colleen Rusholm.
The crowd goes wild.
You're going nuts just now.
This is why I have security.
I like how all your neighbors are here with us.
Only the unemployed neighbors.
Because it's daytime podcast. We're around at this time of day
unemployed and retired yes because i'm you know i'm a like one of those unemployed retired guys
i do have a job uh and i'm not retired but like i see these people they're like out there like i i
fit right in with the old people on the street don't you find in wintertime all they do is notice
when you shovel the driveway and if you're shoveling your neighbor's sidewalks and they
all talk about you behind your back if you don't. Well, I always do. I do one neighbor,
but the other neighbor has a like healthy, able-bodied son. So I feel like if I do his
lawn, I feel like it's encroaching. Yes. But I do that again. And you know what? He's lazy.
Make him go out there and do it. And it's like if, yeah, I'd be like pissed off if my neighbor
did mine because I'm a healthy, I think I'm a healthy, able-bodied guy. Like, what are you doing touching? I'll do it. I'm okay. I'll do yours.
Yeah, leave me alone. Yeah.
But the old guy on the other side, I do his side happily.
That's nice. You're a nice person.
I am a nice person.
It's nice to be here. It's been a while. You just reminded me. It's been, what, a couple
of years?
That's when you thought I said we last recorded in 1997.
Yeah. And I'm like, no, no.
And I thought it was cute that, like, did anyone record a podcast in 1997? I bet you no.
I bet you if there's anyone that would be the first, it'd be you.
We invented podcasting back in 1997. But in reality, you were last here for episode 97.
It was stellar.
Let me tell the people.
Broadcast Hall of Fame.
Because the people are like, oh, Colleen, I love her.
I want to hear more.
So they need to go to episode 97.
Here's the description.
Uh-oh.
Mike chats with GTA radio personality.
Because I had to modify that because you're like a Hamilton girl.
I've been all over.
Yeah, I still live in the 416 Junction. Holla, but yeah, I work in Hamilton every morning.
So you're a, I've called you a GTA radio personality. That's really funny.
Colleen Rushome about her life in Toronto radio. My Rick Hodge incident. I guess we talked about
that Rick Hodge thing at Easy Rock. What Rick Hodge thing? You don't remember we talked about it.
I'll tell you how lovely he is.
Oh yeah, well he's been on the show. He's lovely.
He's so great. But I was on the room when he had like a
minor hissy fit over
a bit not working out and he stormed out.
He's a radio perfectionist and coming
from his history, I mean listen
to that episode if you want, but we definitely get into it.
I still love Rick. No, we all love
Rick. What's not to love? Rick Hodge.
The irony of Stu Jeffries.
And I guess you have to listen and know what that means. And more. Stu and I just texted this
morning, actually. We're still tight. Do you know you just ruined later in this episode? I'm going
to ask me about Stu. No, I'm not going to ask you about Stu. No, that's OK. You can ruin that.
One of my sponsors, Brian Gerstein from Propertyinthesix.com recorded a little bit,
like a 30 second
private message
for Colleen Rusholm.
And in it,
he's going to ask you
if you still talk to Stu.
Well, I'd love to.
I'll expand on that.
How about that?
We'll save that for later.
Juicy bits coming up.
Everyone forget
what you've heard about Stu.
I'm sure when he hears
this episode,
he'll cry.
Is that fair to say?
I think so. I think he's
very sensitive. Yes.
Do you know, we have met up, we have
bumped into each other since episode
97. You saw me on a
super hungover day.
Is that what it was? I was trying
to see what was different. When you see me out
before noon eating breakfast, it's because I'm
hungover. And you were in a cool place where
cool people hang. Yeah. That's a cool place where cool people hang.
Yeah.
That's a cool place.
Down on Roncy and Queen
right where they meet.
This is what I like
about that intersection.
There's like four streets
that meet there
because Roncy,
Queen,
King,
and the Queensway
all converge.
I don't think there's another
like part of the city
where four streets converge.
I don't think so.
And my husband,
shameless plug,
he has a barbershop
right up on Queen about half a block from there called Rod, Gun Gun and Barbers where you can have a beer and have a shave and have a cut.
Okay, first of all, congratulations. This is a big change since episode 97. And I'm a little bit sad in a weird way because I thought we had some really good chemistry.
A Sam and Diane connection?
You said I looked like Ted Danson.
I know.
On episode 97.
And you know what?
I thought about that driving here.
I'm like, he's like.
But here's the thing.
A young Ted Danson.
Like when he was on Cheers.
No, I'll take the old Ted.
I don't care.
He's still handsome.
Yeah, but he was really hot back then.
So now you know what we're going to grow into.
Still a hot, older, handsome man.
But you married someone else. I did. I
married, I couldn't wait. Spoiler alert. You kept having kids. I don't want to take care of all your
children. But there's, you know, I know what you're thinking. Do I wait to be lucky wife number
three or do I go, what is his name? Rod? Is that his name? It's called Rod's Gun and Barbers. But
he's not Rod. No, his name's Jeff. Oh, I know. You get Rod
as in fishing rod,
Gun as in hunting gun.
Oh my God.
Rod, Gun, and Barber.
That's how uncool I am.
I didn't even think
of fishing rod.
I thought his name
was Rod.
No.
My mom's boyfriend
in high school in 1962's
name was Rod.
True story.
Inanimate Rod.
Yeah, fishing rod.
Fishing rod.
Yeah.
Okay, so his name's Jeff.
Yeah, go in there. Get your haircut. Will Jeff hear this episode? I gotta know how careful I gotta be. Is Jeff a fishing rod. Fishing rod. Yeah. Okay, so his name's Jeff. Yeah, go in there. Get your haircut.
Will Jeff hear this episode? I gotta know how careful I gotta be.
Is Jeff a big strong guy?
You always date big strong guys.
What? What are you talking about?
Is he a big...
Is he like over six foot two? No.
He's six feet.
Oh, short for you, I think.
What are you talking about? But he's handsome.
Is he as handsome as Ted Danson?
I'm going to tell you, he's pretty handsome.
He looks like a young Hugh Grant,
and a lot of people compare him to a young Kevin Costner.
Both handsome men, in my humble opinion.
Both handsome men, yes.
Kevin Costner, he's a guy who'll kind of disappear for a while,
and he'll show up in a great movie,
and you're like, oh yeah, I forgot about Kevin Costner.
I know, and he was a great actor.
You know what was on the other day?
It was Dances with Wolves.
But that's the movie that pisses me off
because that's the year
Goodfellas should have
won Best Picture.
Like, really.
But not as bad
as Shakespeare in Love
What did that beat?
beating Saving Private Ryan.
That was the biggest upset.
Yeah, that's an upset too.
But just...
Okay.
If you watch...
If anyone listening
watches Goodfellas and then watches Dances with Wolves, like, we can't... I mean, Dances with Wolves if you watch if any like one listening watches
Goodfellas
and then watches
Dances with Wolves
like we can't
I mean Dances with Wolves
is a fine little movie
but Goodfellas
is like one of the
greatest movies of all time
I agree
and it's the one movie
that no matter
when it's on
and what time of day
or where it is in the movie
I have to watch all of it
mainly because that
soundtrack is so good
oh yeah
you got the piano coda
from
Gimme Shelter yes Me Shelter.
Yes.
Give Me Shelter?
No.
From Layla.
Oh, Give Me Shelter's in there, too.
Give Me Shelter's in there.
But the piano coda's from Layla.
When the guy in the backseat gets, and they find him.
What's the scene where they find him hanging in the frozen truck thing?
Yeah, I think that's, I think.
It is Layla.
It's the guitar.
The Layla, the piano coda.
The piano.
Right.
Yeah. Wow, let's talk about music. No, Layla. It's the guitar. The Layla, the piano coda. The piano. Right. Yeah.
Wow, let's talk about music.
No, we have a lot of music to play here,
but let me talk about Jeff for a moment.
Okay.
How long ago did you marry this man?
Marry him?
It'll be two years this July.
Wow.
Yeah.
I've known him since I was 28.
I don't know, 40 something.
So am I.
We were together.
Yeah, see, you already have something in common
with him.
We were together.
We split up.
We got back together
and we thought we'd get married
and made our parents happy.
Okay.
Is he of German descent?
Nine.
He is of Welsh descent.
He's fifth generation
Southampton, Port Elgin,
Welsh.
Okay.
I know a Welsh guy.
Okay.
Okay.
Jeff.
Okay.
Not a very...
I think you'd like Jeff a lot.
Is it Jeff with a G?
It's Jeff with a J.
His name is Jeffrey Joseph James.
He's triple J.
My grandfather's name was Joseph James.
Really?
Yeah.
You're not kidding.
That's for real.
Wow.
The last name is James.
No, middle name James.
So it's Joseph James and then his last name.
Yeah, okay.
But yeah, my son's name is James as well.
That's a very cool name.
And that's my brother's name.
I really love the name James, but he never allowed himself to be a Jamie or a Jim.
He's always been James.
Very nice.
So congratulations.
Thank you.
I am like, I don't know why I have a sliver of jealousy considering I'm not available
to you at all.
I know.
You have never been.
Never been.
But it was nice meeting you.
We should tell people that brunch place is called Easy Restaurant.
Easy, that's right.
Great eggs.
They have a perfect breakfast burrito.
And they have an Easy Rider theme going on in there.
Yeah.
There's like, what's his name?
Henry, not Henry, Fonda.
Yeah, Peter Fonda.
Peter Fonda's picture all over the place and motorcycles.
So instantly I didn't feel cool enough. I instantly I didn't feel cool enough yeah I
didn't feel cool enough to be there but you were there with a girlfriend my friend Jen and you were
hung over very much so but I was there and I saw you and I had a moment of is that Colleen I had
this moment because I looked really bloated and like no but the hair was lighter maybe my hair
was quite light yeah I'm used to you having darker hair.
Yeah.
But I'm like, that's Colleen.
And I'm kind of staring you down.
I think you had a moment of like, is that Ted Danson?
Is that Ted?
Should I go get an autograph?
Yeah.
Did he age in reverse?
Sam Malone?
Oh, yeah.
So, okay.
So, congratulations on the wedding.
Thank you.
Condolences.
Did I hear that your dog passed away?
Boris. Oh, how old was your dog passed away? Boris.
How old was your dog?
He was almost 13.
He was a French bulldog who liked nine people.
He was tough as nails.
He was my husband's best friend
and I was the mom
and that dog has never made us happier.
We actually cried yesterday, Jeff and I,
thinking about...
Thinking about Boris?
Yeah, he was
kind of like a little kid for us.
He had a bigger personality than any
dog I've ever seen. He's a French bulldog, by
the way, that had a Latino walk.
And a Russian
name. And a Russian name.
Is it from Boris the Spider or
Whose Song? Maybe. Maybe. Can you...
Yes. How old are
those bulldogs supposed to live? Like, is this a health... 10 to 12. Okay, that's good then. Yeah. Maybe. Can you, yes. How old are those bulldogs supposed to live?
Like, is this a health?
10 to 12.
Okay, that's good then.
Yeah.
So he lived a long life.
I'm sorry that this dog couldn't live forever.
I know.
He does live forever in my mind.
So you have a tattoo.
Did you say that you pointed to a tattoo, but this is not a video.
I have to tell people.
Yeah, so on my left arm, I've got his name written Boris.
This is about three years old, but now i'm going to take off my blazer i did something people
hey here we go um my producer for christmas i i sent her boris's last snore a snore that he gave
i'd say about a week before he passed away and she um through the editing thing at work, sorry, I'm looking for it,
mounted it and
actually put it
in a frame for me.
So, here's...
Can you hear that?
Yes.
That's
one of Boris's final snores.
So what I did was I...
Sorry, I'm moving away from the microphone.
That's okay.
She's removing her jacket.
As I tattooed that audio wave onto my arm.
Oh, my goodness.
What do you think of that?
That's cool.
So that's Boris's, one of his last snores.
And the thing is, that's the snore that I live with.
Those are the squiggly lines I get over here.
That's right.
Those are audio waves.
That's what those are.
That's cool.
And I'm super cool and tough looking, too. Is that the only two lines I get over here. That's right. Those are audio waves. That's what those are. That's cool. And I'm super cool and tough looking too.
Is that the only two pieces of ink?
Okay.
All dog related.
Kind of weird, huh?
I thought maybe you'd have Mike on there somewhere.
Yeah, Mike's in a spot I can't show you.
My husband can't see it either.
It's really weird.
That is weird.
Poor Jeff.
Poor Rod.
Poor Rod.
Okay, so the dog died, which is bad. That is weird. Poor Jeff. Poor Rod. Poor Rod. So, okay.
So the dog died, which is bad.
I'm sorry.
Are you going to replace this dog?
Eventually.
We're probably going to do some fostering.
Yeah, anytime we sort of remotely think about it,
it's amazing when you lose a dog and your friends find out.
All they do is send you, like, pet finder lists,
rescue dog photos, and they're all amazing.
But we're just, our hearts aren't ready.
Will you name the new dog Boris?
No, that's weird.
How about Boris 2?
No.
Okay.
Nothing Boris related.
He was one of it, one and only.
I learned, I didn't ask you about this in episode 97
because I didn't know about it.
And then I learned about it subsequently.
I learned about a show called Food Factory.
Oh, yes. So let me play. Hold on. I'm all loaded up here Food Factory. Oh, yes. So let me play.
Hold on. I'm all loaded up here.
Oh, here we go.
Who's this guy talking? Stu's brother.
Stu's brother. Listen to it.
Sounds like Stu.
For such a popular food,
bagels have a mysterious past.
No one can be quite sure
where they came from. Who's this talking?
That's me. Although there are many theories.
In ancient Egypt, some hieroglyphics
feature bread rolls with holes in them.
I did not know that. Yes.
Some believe they began in 17th century Austria
as a tribute to the king of Poland
from a Viennese baker.
You would know about that stuff.
Well, I've read scripts well.
Okay, so this is called Food Factory.
Food Factory got nine seasons of so this is called Food Factory. Food Factory.
God, nine seasons of Food Factory on the Food Network, Canada, and USA.
It's been a great show.
But isn't it funny that I worked with that voice. Yeah, but is that coincidence?
Or did you say like, hey, I got a.
100% coincidence.
That's amazing.
Todd, Stu's brother, is a very successful voiceover guy.
When I listen to Stern on Satellite, I hear a ton of American Todd commercials.
Fascinating.
Okay, so is this show still going on?
It's in repeat.
We shot, the last one we shot was about nine months ago.
How come I didn't know about this?
When did this start?
Five, six years ago.
You don't watch the Food Network, obviously.
No, I don't watch the Food Network.
Food Factory is a big show.
It's shot beautifully
and kids adore it because we'll take you in
ice cream factories and show you how we make
lollipops. It was really, really
fun to work on that show. Great team.
I have a question from an Arthur
Sinclair on Twitter
and he says to you, as a person
so intimate with the food industry, but you're
just reading a script, right?
I'm intimate with food because I like to eat it.
But let's see if I can answer this question.
I'd be curious of her thoughts on the
minimum wage increase. That's a heavy question.
I think it's about time.
So what are we at now? Is it 14 or 15 right now?
I can't tell you because I forget.
I made $3.85 my first job.
I think I made $3.75.
It went up when you turned 18, if I remember.
Is that still the case? Wasn't there a minimum wage
for under 18? I don't remember that either.
I worked at Chi-Chi's. Chi-Chi's?
Bonas, nachos, Chi-Chi's and Kitchener, smoking
or not. That's how I answered the phone.
That's amazing. Absolutely.
It's time to increase minimum wage,
especially for restaurant workers who count on tips.
I think it should actually be
higher then because
serving wages are always much less, right?
A lot of my friends work bar.
And I think it's time for them to have bigger salaries
to not count on those tips as much.
Yeah.
Okay.
So it's 14 or 15 now?
It's going to 15.
I don't know.
It's affecting my husband,
who has a lot of part-time workers.
All of their hours went up.
And does it hurt?
Absolutely.
I haven't heard him complain about it once because he worked in the service industry so long. Right. So it's time.
Yeah. No. Okay. Good. Very good question, Arthur Sinclair. Yes, Arthur. She did have thoughts on
that. I have a DFS. I don't know who DFS is, but DFS says he has a super crush on you. Super crush
on Colleen. Oh, wow. So can you ask her if she'll leave her current beau?
First of all, that question offends me because if you're going to leave your current beau, come on.
But you love this Jeff character.
You love this guy.
You sound like a mother.
So you love this Jeff character.
Is he good to you?
Is he good to you?
I'll tell you, I've married a really amazing person.
Yes.
In two years, you said?
Yes. And I didn't get an invitation to the wedding.
Was it closed?
Was I on some kind of...
Actually, I got married in the Junction
at 3030.
Do you know 3030?
I know the Junction very well. Where is 3030?
It's past Indy Alehouse
on the north side.
It's a big music venue, and I had a band,
the Dave Murphy Band,
that plays the Orbit Room every Friday night.
Any relation to Chris Murphy from Sloan?
No, but I ran into him on Dundas Street West
about a year ago and reminded him
that I met him at QN07,
and he got to bring out some of the members of KISS.
And he's like, oh my God,
you're linked to one of my favorite memories ever.
I used to have a super crush on Chris Murphy.
Yeah, well, he was here
on this show.
When?
Like less than a year ago,
I think in the summer,
I think.
I love him.
And he was amazing.
I'm still totally obsessed
with Sloan.
Yeah, because he wrote
Underwhelmed.
Yeah, the coolest song ever.
The coolest song ever.
Like that was like
Canada's grunge scene
or whatever.
Yeah.
And that tune,
I can still stick on
Underwhelmed.
I just love it.
I missed the point. i missed the point i missed hey mister he did that one but he did uh he did yeah he did a bunch of the early
the other man i love that that's a newer sloan album twice removed do you know they're making
a new album i uh follow sloan on twitter and they're apparently i follow them on instagram
well well you should follow them on Twitter, too.
Come on.
So no relation to Chris Murphy.
You got married in the Junction.
I did.
Cool.
So you're not going to leave your current beau for DFS?
Unless DFS is something good to offer.
So waiting to hear back.
There's another question here for you.
Where are these coming from, by the way?
Twitter.
Okay.
Pete M.
He wants to know your favorite place for lunch in Hamilton.
So you live in the Junction.
You live with your husband in the Junction?
Yes.
And is it the real Junction?
I live in the Junction Triangle.
So that means, is it more like a Dundas DuPont fakery?
Or are we actually...
Because Dundas and Keele is like Junction Central.
Yes, that is Junction Central.
Which now, instead of the submarine shop, there's an A&W now.
Broke everybody's heart.
I'm on the other side of the bridge.
So I'm DuPont-Simmington.
Okay, yeah, yeah.
Okay, that's not really Junction, but that's okay.
I know they've extended the borders.
It's called the Junction Triangle.
You know, I worked at Galleria Mall for five years.
Oh, God, it's still standing.
Yeah, it's still there.
Looks like a swimming pool inside. It's all tiled. It looks the same. Oh, God. It's still standing. Yeah, it's still there. Looks like a swimming pool inside. It's all
tiled. It looks the same.
It's terrible. It's kind of like frozen
in time. It's like Canada's
time machine. Toronto's
time machine. So I know this
DuPont quite well.
But cool. That's a cool place to live.
Thank you.
I want to ask
you... Actually, I want to do something with you.
If you don't mind.
Oh, I want to answer that.
Yeah, go ahead.
Maple Leaf Pancake House on Main Street West.
My friend Mia owns it.
She's a lovely Greek woman and she makes omelets to die for.
Maple Leaf Restaurant?
Maple Leaf Pancake House.
Maple Leaf Pancake House.
But there's so many great places going on in Hamilton,
it's becoming a foodie joint.
Okay, so you work.
Tell us all the station you work at.
The station's in my history?
No, the one that you're currently
working with. I work at
953 Fresh Radio. And that's in
Hamilton. That's in Hamilton. So you commute
from the junction to Hamilton every day.
It takes me 38 minutes in the morning. That's not bad.
It's funny. I know Alan Cross is an upcoming
guest of yours. Yes, two weeks.
Can you tell him this?
He told me at the Humble and Fred Christmas party
Years ago
He said, if you're going to do that commute
Be very careful on Ford Drive
Going down past the Ford plant
Because it's quite slippery
I think about Alan Cross
Every snowstorm
Every time I go up that hill
And then down past the Ford plant
Tell him that.
See if it creeps him out.
I guess you hear it in his voice, right?
I hear him telling me.
The ongoing history of Ford Drive.
I always take my foot off the gas and glide down it, and I don't speed.
I always think of him saying that to me.
I will tell him.
In two weeks, he's kicking out the jams.
Okay, good.
So that'll almost as fun as this.
He's going to have a great jam list.
I can't wait to hear that.
No, I can't wait.
And I can't wait to...
Before we kick out the jams, I actually, this is stupid, but I'm
going to do this anyways.
I was like thinking of like songs, like Colleen Rush home theme songs.
And then I was thinking of songs that have the word Rush in the title.
Oh, I thought you were going to, because Colleen is hard to find.
The closest is Come On Eileen.
Oh.
Well, it's like you can talk over this.
So I'm going to just, I have like six jams lined up here and I'm going to burn through. I'm not going to play the whole thing. Just a little bit. You's like you can talk over this. I have like six jams
lined up here and I'm going to burn through. I'm not going to play the whole thing.
Just a little bit. You better have all of Duel on this.
I do. And I want to hear whether you
it's like, is it a hit or a miss?
Like, is it a jam or not?
As per Colleen Rush home.
So what this is, this is Coldplay's
A Rush of Blood to the Head.
Chris Martin.
I love Coldplay. Is that bad to say?
Now, people really hate on them,
but I love them.
No, they got kind of
big and popular,
so a lot of people now
kind of like go at them,
but they were good.
It's not their fault.
No.
And Shiver is a good jam.
Yeah.
And Yellow and Trouble
and all that stuff.
All that stuff.
The stuff he's doing
with Chainsmokers.
Right.
It's very good.
So this is a rush
of blood to the head.
Okay, let's hear another Rush song.
Let's hear another Rush song here.
This is 5440.
Oh my God, really?
I saw them in concert when I was 17.
I've seen them a couple of times too.
They're good.
They're a solid band.
My friend vacationed down in the Caribbean
and ran into the lead singer, his name escapes me, and his wife. And they said, yeah, we're a solid band. My friend vacationed down in the Caribbean and ran into the lead singer,
his name escapes me, and his wife.
And they said, yeah, we're doing quite well.
We call our home the house that Hootie built.
Oh, yeah, of course, of course.
Because they covered...
Yeah, I only want to be with...
What's that song?
I only want to be with...
No, not...
What's the song?
Hold my hand...
No, uh...
What was their song?
Hold on.
Oh, my gosh.
That's funny.
What's... 5440?
The song that Hootie covered.
I can't think of it while I'm hearing this underneath this.
Yeah, that's my problem too.
I just had it, now it's gone.
Are you Googling?
Yeah, I'm going to Google it because it's stupid we don't know.
I know.
If I remember correctly, it was from the Friends soundtrack.
Does that sound right?
Probably.
But anyway, 5440,
great alternative rock band,
good Toronto scene,
probably didn't make a ton of money,
but became very rich
because Hootie and the Blowfish
covered their song, which is?
I Go Blind.
I Go Blind.
Aren't we stupid?
Yes, which I got to be honest,
5440 had the better version to me.
No, I agree.
I think Fish Safari has a lot of big Ken Conn hits
and they're fantastic
yeah
okay here's some
more uh
some legendary jams here
oh
turn it up
starts quiet
I like how it starts with a piano
well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor
coming saying something about a queen.
This changed my world most to your turn.
Peasants singing and drummers drumming and the archers split the tree.
There was a fanfare blowing to the sun That was floating on the breeze
I love that.
After the Gold Rush.
That album.
Sickling.
Sicklingly amazing.
You passed upstairs.
You passed a picture of Neil Young
in the hallway on your way down here.
I love that guy.
Yeah.
Neil Young should have been
on my list of the top 10,
which I'm going to get defensive
about once we get to it.
Neil, usually people
in their jam list,
Neil's always number 11.
Ooh, Big Audio Dynamite.
You want to hear a fun fact?
Yeah.
It's technically
Big Audio Dynamite 2.
Okay.
But you never see it
on your listing.
No. Because Mick from The Clash Dynamite 2. But you never see it on your listing.
Because Mick from The Clash has Big Audio Dynamite.
And then he changes the whole
lineup except himself and he calls
the new band Big Audio Dynamite 2.
And this comes from Big Audio Dynamite 2.
Like the sequel.
I had no idea.
That's a fun fact for you.
Here we go.
This should be your theme song. I had no idea. I know. That's a fun fact for you. Here we go. Nice situation nowhere.
Rush, ball, a change of atmosphere. This should be your theme song.
True.
If I have my own podcast, I'm going to start with that.
You could have one.
You could just visit me every day and we'll do it.
We'll do it together.
So Big Audio Dynamite, great jam, Rush.
I think that's their biggest hit.
I think that's fair to say.
Yeah.
She sings from back here.
So, do you know what I mean?
Like a little Aguilera.
Yeah.
A little bit back there.
Not from the diaphragm, right?
No, it's not like in your throat.
Can you name the actor who is in this video?
Is it Keanu Reeves?
I believe it's Keanu Reeves.
I think it is, and I think she dated him for a while.
You know, he doesn't age.
Keanu Reeves.
Yeah, and he also somehow still sucks as an actor.
He hasn't learned how to act either.
Oh, God.
I remember her dancing that white dress.
I'm gonna run.
I'm gonna try.
You're getting right in the 90s art right now.
All my heart.
Oh, yeah.
Super 90s.
Oh, baby, baby, please.
Okay.
I'm surprised this wasn't one of your jams.
One more Rush song.
It should be on your...
It better be like Rush. Why is it Rush? No, Rush doesn't have a song with Rush your jams. One more Rush song. It should be on your... It better be like Rush,
why is it Rush?
No, Rush doesn't have a song
with Rush in the titles.
They're disqualified.
Ready?
Mm-hmm.
Who is this?
I know this.
You will know it.
Just give it a moment.
You'll know it.
We're similar vintage, so...
Okay.
know it.
We're similar vintage, so... Okay.
We'll wait for the chorus.
Give me the initials
of the singer. T.D.
Like Ted
Danson.
Is it a woman's name?
Correct.
T.D.? You'll know it. You just need a bit of the chorus to remind you.
T.D.
I know.
I'm feeling it.
I don't know who sings this song.
Taylor Dane.
Dane.
She wasn't very good then.
She had a bigger hit than this.
Yeah, she did
let's not talk about it
it's Taylor Day
did she judge Canadian Idol?
oh I don't think so
but maybe
I don't know
wasn't she Canadian Taylor Day?
no
she's like a New Yorker
like a Long Islander
or something like that
she's from New York
what did you think
of those Rush jams?
I love them
was that an enjoyable
experience for you?
I feel like that
never happens for me
and I love that you did
some homework on that.
And it's made me very happy.
Now I'll hear about all the Rush songs I missed.
I know.
See?
Because I did it very like spun just off my own collection.
Just kind of threw that up there.
Yeah.
Everybody listening, I order you.
And Colleen would back me up on this.
Go to patreon.com slash Toronto Mike and help crowdfund this passion project. So we can have these kick-ass microphones in this go to patreon.com slash toronto mic and help help crowdfund this passion project
so we can have these kick-ass microphones in this i know this is a good setup but you know what it
can always be better so support this since you were last year these chairs were upgraded do you
like that i just put my feet on the chair like i live here uh from blue skies agency which outfits
like they're in liberty village and they will outfit your office.
They donated these chairs.
Oh, how nice.
They're so cozy too.
I could never afford these chairs,
even with that luxurious Patreon account.
Right.
And these,
last time you were here,
you had your mic on a stand
and you had to like bend over.
Now you have swing arm boom things.
I do.
That's a big difference, right?
Yeah, it is.
Now I'm resting comfortably.
And that's a good place to be when the jams start kicking.
Patreon.com slash Toronto Mike.
Okay.
Do you enjoy an alcoholic beverage?
I love it.
I may have a problem.
Do you love it a lot?
Do you want a six pack of Great Lakes beer?
If you don't, I'll take it.
Do you want it?
What kind of a gift is that?
It's all yours. I'm kidding
with you. Harry Porter,
Great Lakes Brewery, GLB.
6.5? Yeah,
I'll take this. I only
need three of these.
I gave you a variety pack there.
People love Great Lakes.
If you want to share it with Rod, you don't have to share it with Rod. I know it's Jeff.
Canuck Pale Ale?
That's a staple. You've got to take down the Canuck Pale Ale. That's a staple. Yeah. You gotta
take down the Canuck Pale Ale.
And the Pompous Ass English Ale.
He's so nosy.
Pompous Ass? So that Great Lakes beer
is for you. Okay.
But is it really for me or are we gonna like turn off
the mic and go, I just said that for the sake of the podcast.
So episode 97 when you were
here last, I did not give you
any beer, right? Because I've been here a long time.
I think you gave me like a glass of like tepid water.
I'm glad I was tepid.
Half full.
What is tepid?
It was at least three quarters full.
Yeah.
This is a, so you haven't been here for the Great Lakes Beer Sponsorship.
Yeah.
Very exciting.
Every guest leaves with a six pack of beer.
But do I really?
Yeah, I know.
Again, like it's actually mine?
Come on.
Of course.
Just hold on.
Pause this. I'll go out to my car and put them in my car and then I'll come Yeah, I know. Again, it's actually mine? Come on. Of course. Just hold on. Pause this.
I'll go out to my car and put them in my car,
and then I'll come back and finish it
to guarantee I get to take this with me.
It is your...
Yes.
Okay, guys, we're back.
And we're back, and the beer's in the Subaru.
The beer's in the car, yeah.
Yeah.
Yes, absolutely.
But you're going to want to pour that beer
into a pint glass.
So there's more for you, Colleen.
Oh, I was looking at this.
That's yours too.
The Property in the Six.
That is the aforementioned Brian Gerstein from propertyinthesix.com.
Brian Gerstein.
He's a real estate sales representative of PSR Brokerage.
And he has a question.
You'll never guess what he's going to ask you.
This will be a big surprise.
So let's hear from Brian.
Okay.
Propertyinthesix. Okay. Propertyinthe6.com
Hi, Colleen.
Brian Gerstein here, sales representative with PSR Brokerage and primary sponsor of Toronto Mic.
I have exclusive pre-public access via PSR to new condos for 1181 Queen Street West, located at Queen Gladstone.
I can see you at Queen Gladstone.
I'll tell you.
Mr. Gerstein.
Mr. Brian Gerstein.
Thank you for the pint glass.
Yeah, I talk to Stu regularly.
We chat on the phone a lot.
We're texting a lot.
Just this morning, we had a funny text exchange that's always inappropriate that I wish I could share with you.
But yeah, Stu and I have a special bond
that actually will never be broken.
We've been there for each other for the ups and downs,
and this is on and off the air.
Yeah, I love him. Stu's like my brother.
Do you like him better
than his brother? Yes.
He's just... Yes.
I love Stu much more than his brother. Yes.
Just wanted to clarify that.
The Stu Jeffries
has been here. I think I should get him
back to kick out the jam. So next time you're chatting
Oh, he would have a lot to say about music. Tell him he's got to come back and kick out the jam. So next time you're chatting. Oh, he would have a lot to say about music.
Tell him he's got to come back and kick out the jam.
Do you want me to text him right now?
Yeah, tell him we need some good rocking tonight.
Yeah, he loves that.
I have his good rocking tonight glass.
I think I'm the only one that still has it.
That's amazing.
Oh, yeah, he'd be a great jam kicker.
And he's still at Boom.
And he's doing well, right?
Boom's doing well.
Yep.
People love it.
Good mix of music.
I have to cough right now.
I have a cough button,
but it's way over here.
Yeah,
don't worry about it.
I've been up a lot.
I've been talking
because I'm on my own this week.
Darren Laidman is off.
I've been talking
since 530 this morning.
Listen to how low my voice is.
It's great.
And I love that husky styles.
And we're going to And we're going to be
kicking out jams, but first let me tell you about
PayTM.
PayTM.ca
is a
free online bill payment
service that helps manage all of your bills
in one place.
You can pay utility bills,
mobile, phone, internet, gas,
property taxes, education, credit cards, insurance, and rent.
You can pay every bill you can imagine.
And you can use your credit card to pay it or you can just use your bank account to pay it.
But you do it through Paytm.
True story.
I just had to pay property taxes.
I paid with my credit card.
So now I get the points on my credit card to get my free groceries at no frills.
That's nice.
I have a President's Choice MasterCard.
And because I use Paytm, they give me cash back towards future bills.
So it just pays me money.
To me, it's amazing.
I really, really enjoy it.
Oh, good.
So you get cash back.
And here's the cool thing.
If you use the promo code Toronto Mike when you pay your first bill,
you get $10 in Paytm cash
that you could put
towards your next bill.
So actually,
you can put towards that bill,
I believe.
So if you're paying a $50 bill,
you only got to cough up $40
because you used
the promo code Toronto Mike.
It's the real deal.
I've done it.
You should do it.
Paytm.ca.
Do it, Colleen.
You're a big deal around here, man. In this basement, you mean?
Yeah.
I'm like the second coolest guy.
It depends if my 16-year-old is
home or not.
Who went to the Raptors game the other day
against the Celtics.
And we destroyed them.
Yeah. I love what's going on with the Raptors.
And the Celtics are a great team. I know. The Raptors look like they want to win the Eastern Conference.
I love what's going on with the Leafs right now.
I can't wait for the Olympics to kick off.
That is very cool.
Yeah, that's tomorrow morning at 6 a.m.
Yeah, I watched curling yesterday, though.
So I'm already watching the Olympics.
And I think men's figure skating is tonight.
Oh, yeah.
I love it all.
No, I'm a big Olympics guy, too.
Absolutely.
And yeah, I watched the Leafs game last night.
We went in a shootout.
That was... Cappin' in. Wow. I watched the Leaf game last night. We went in a shootout. Wow.
The Raptors are
kicking some ash.
No, it's good times in Toronto.
Are you a Jays fan too? I'm a big Jays fan.
Me too. We lost Barney.
I don't know.
I would say we upgraded
the infield backup guys.
We upgraded the infield guys
you think we did yep is there any way to win against the barney has no no uh the yankees and
the red socks will be tough to beat so i think we're hoping that everything aligns perfectly to
get that second wild card i wouldn't put any money on it i don't see us making the playoffs this year
but there are a couple of blue and i have uh my next guest is a guy named Kenan Matheson, who is a, he covers the Jays and he'll be elaborating on this,
but there's a couple of blue chip prospects,
like only like a year away.
Oh,
uh,
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
And Bo Bichette.
Easy for you to say.
Both of their dads.
Yeah.
Were,
uh,
major league baseball,
uh,
stars actually.
Okay.
Uh,
they were,
but they're like blue chip prospects almost here, so things should get interesting.
Okay, good.
So hang in there, Colleen.
Okay.
I have a question for you.
Wait.
Tell me when you're going to start the music because I have something to say about it.
Okay, you say it.
I have something to say about it.
Go.
I'm upset with how you asked me to do this.
Okay.
When you ask somebody that loves music.
Yes.
Their 10 favorite songs,
you have to be more specific. Is it
my 10 favorite songs that have affected
my music influences throughout the year?
Is it my 10 favorite songs, or throughout my
years, rather? 10 favorite songs to get ready
to? 10 favorite songs that I need to
emote and have a cry to?
10 favorite songs from the Manchester
scene in the 90s? Bands like
Suede. I'm a huge Smiths fan.
Notice how the Smiths didn't make it on that list?
I love OMD.
I love R.E.M.
Not a single R.E.M. song.
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark.
Which I've seen twice in concert.
I love Echo and the Bunnymen.
It's also not on the list.
Here's the deal.
When you ask me, this is what I came up with,
but it's not necessarily my 10 favorite songs every day.
Colleen, listen to me.
Yeah, but I feel like I'm acknowledging Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos.
But there's this reason and a story behind them.
But I got to tell you, next time, say, what are your 10 favorite songs that you love to pump yourself up to?
Then you've given me an assignment.
That's too narrow.
I need you to decide.
This is a self-reflection experience for you that you need to look inside,
look in the mirror
and say,
what are my 10 jams?
But I love The Cure.
The Cure's not even on that list.
This is just a list
that I came up with
that made me feel a certain way
on the day that you asked me.
I just need to defend it.
Your jams or your jams?
My jams are my jams,
but I love so much music.
There, now we can play them.
Are you ready
to kick out the jams?
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
Turn it up.
I never let you go
So won't you say you love me?
I'll make you so proud of me
We'll make them turn their heads
Every place we go
So won't you please be my, be my baby.
Be my little baby.
My one and only baby.
Say you'll be my darling.
Be my, be my baby.
Be my baby now.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
The Ronettes, Be My Baby.
Speaking of the Goodfellas soundtrack, this is in there, right?
At that great scene where he gets the back door of the restaurant or whatever?
That is right.
Nice.
That is right.
Where do I start with my love of Motown, 60s artists?
I was just in Detroit at the Motown Museum.
Northern Soul, love that stuff.
But the Ronettes, for me, when I hear this song, and most people would agree,
it's all about dirty dancing.
This is a movie.
It's the first time. This is a movie.
It's the first time I ever watched a movie when I was maybe 12 or 13
where I felt something from the waist below.
Woo!
Where I thought, whoa.
There was a tingle.
This is sexy.
This is forbidden, foreboding.
It's, it's, it, it,
I had my first crush on Patrick Swayze.
And later I realized my dream
by interviewing the writer, Eleanor Bergstein,
at the Princess Elizabeth Theatre
in front of an audience, hundreds of people.
Wow.
And she talked about the music selection that she...
Because she had a lot to do with the film as well.
And she said that her archetypal male,
she had an idea of this person.
He had to be macho, yet soft.
He had to be good-looking, but not too pretty, you know?
When Patrick Swayze walked in the room,
he didn't have to say
a word. She casted him right
away. And I'll never forget that.
So I've got a whole thing going on with Dirty Dancing,
the Ronettes, this type of
music, the Phil Spector sound that we talked about
earlier, that big, full
studio sound. Yeah, I'm a fan,
man. This is one of my top tens for sure.
I'm not going to be defensive about this one.
This one's okay. So I should tell the people at home
that you said no particular
order. So I have chosen the
order here. I just wanted to let the people know.
Now, is it your personal order? No.
Definitely not. Okay. You just went off about
what you do. I kind of, like I didn't,
certain genres, I wanted to mix it up.
So I wanted to, I did want to start, like I intentionally started with the Ronettes.
Be My Baby.
I think it's your oldest jam on the list.
It's my oldest jam.
And it's just such a classic.
And you mentioned the Phil Spector sound.
Like that's it right there.
That is the, that's the definitive jam right there.
It really is.
He's a crazy creep, but man, because he could reproduce.
Right. You ready for another jam, because he could reproduce. Right.
You ready for another jam, Colleen?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
Billy Joel.
So unlike your first jam, and I shouldn't be talking yet.
This is an opera to me.
Yeah, your first jam was like a two-minute pop single, like, let's go.
This one's a bit longer, so we have some more time together.
I think it's Billy Joel's masterpiece.
I'll be quiet.
A bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead
Get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I face to face
A bottle of red
A bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you anytime you want He paints such a great New York picture, right?
So picture New York in the 70s.
It's a couple meeting at a restaurant.
And you don't know why that's important yet
until the next bridge of the song,
which sounds like a completely different song.
Do you know, are you familiar with this song?
Oh my God, yes.
Yeah, okay.
Of course, of course.
So do you love it too?
Do you understand why I love it?
No, I totally, no.
I think it's, it's hard to say if that's his masterpiece.
For me it is.
It's a tremendous tune.
In fact, I'm actually, as you talk and we talk,
I'm going to find out someone else has kicked out this jam.
So I've gone to the, yeah,
I've gone to the Google spreadsheet where I track this all.
And I will find out shortly.
Here, you have to turn this up.
Let's be quiet while you Google.
It's a couple of...
Yeah, I don't want to say too much.
Okay.
I love the horns coming in soon.
I guess clarinet. I love that.
That sounds so New York too, right?
This song, what I think you like is that this song is like,
it changes up on you and then it kind of comes back.
It's a musical.
And I feel like Billy Joel genuinely loves singing it.
He performs it rather than sings it.
Having seen him at concert a couple times,
it's just the hair on my arms.
And his piano.
Oh, here, listen to this.
Do you know that he was a piano master when he was seven?
No, I didn't know that.
He's like a prodigy.
Yeah, he actually was called a prodigy. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
You know what?
I love songs that I can picture perfectly, that it's a story.
Oh, I love this part.
And here it changes again, right?
Brenda and Eddie. Anyway, are to survive. Brenda and Eddie.
Anyway, are you still Googling?
No, it's not Googling.
I'm looking at the spreadsheet, but I can tell you...
So somebody else?
Someone else did, but Mike Wilner picked a different Billy Joel song.
Oh, we did.
Speaking of the Blue Jays.
This kind of songs always remind me of Paradise by the Dashboard Light.
A little bit less corny.
Yeah.
Well, yeah.
Meatloaf has its place, for sure.
Or a more modern example would be like Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day.
You know, it's like...
I'm not familiar with that song.
What I always say when somebody picks a Billy Joel jam,
I always like to share the story that I found it.
It took me a long time.
Okay.
Sportsnet's Brad Faye kicked out scenes from an Italian restaurant by Billy Joel.
Awesome.
So you're not alone here.
He's my partner.
I doubt I'm alone.
Do you know he's seen Bruce Springsteen 97 times?
Really?
Yeah.
I've only seen him once.
He's a...
This sound, too.
Like, and I won't...
No spoilers.
No spoilers.
But if you like this jam,
I bet you there'll be some Bruce Springsteen jams
you love as well.
There's many,
and there's a reason why I chose the one I did.
Oh, you chose one.
Spoiler alert.
Yeah, sorry.
I assumed we were getting into it. Billy Joel, they did a... There's a reason why I chose the one I did. Oh, you chose one. Spoiler alert. Yeah, sorry.
I assumed we were getting into it.
Billy Joel, they did a science thing where they said,
okay, take the quantity of his catalog and see how many were top 40.
Yeah, a lot.
Right, so Billy Joel was the one who had the highest percentage of top 40 hits in his catalog.
I believe it because late 70s then 80s and then he had hits
in the 90s. I can't name any
2000 hits with Billy Joel but he continues
to write for movies. Apparently he's
out of the song writing.
Now he just wants to do movies.
He's like when Roberto Alomar sat out
on the last day of the season with his 300 average.
Billy Joel stopped
recording new music at some point
and that is what kept
his average up because
you can't be top 40 anymore.
Billy Joel can't be top 40 anymore.
That was a different time.
We judged the look of our
top 40 stars far less when you look at
guys like Phil Collins being on top.
Now look who's in the charts.
Now, can you imagine now
a 45-year- old man being on top
I mean unless his name is Eminem
because he's like 45 right
it's a good jam you picked Colleen
I'd say this is an epic jam
I think it's epic
and then it all comes together in the end
we know what happened to the couple
and they finally sit at that same Italian restaurant
so tell us
do this
tell us the too long, didn't read version.
Like in a nutshell, what is this?
Tell me the story.
How quickly can you tell me?
Well, if you were listening, I wouldn't want to bore you
because you'd probably already get it.
But it's a couple that meet at their favorite Italian restaurant
that meant a lot to them when they were together as a couple.
And then they reminisce and they look back
and you hear how great it was in the beginning,
how money was an issue in the middle,
and in the end they couldn't do it anymore.
So they separated ways, but as you'll hear here,
they go back and they meet at this Italian restaurant.
You look great. I've got kids. I'm married now.
So they let it go.
They still cherish the relationship they had,
but it's over and they've moved on. but they'll always have their favorite Italian restaurant.
I think it's so romantic. Not quite the pina colada song, but not quite the pina colada song.
No. Yeah, it's beautiful. And it's a cool title.
That's not a particularly snappy title for a single.
No. It's from an Italian restaurant, but it works.
And that's why I don't think it ever was a single for Billy Joel.
I believe, maybe I'm wrong.
I think it is one of those top 40 songs.
You think so?
He had a bunch.
I think so.
Oh, okay.
I think so.
I think so.
Wow.
We're going to change the pace.
Epic.
Now, this next jam is one of my personal favorite jams.
I picked one of your favorite jams?
You picked one of my,
not one of my 10.
Well, what is it?
Tell me first
so I can maybe set it up for you.
No, I'm going to play it.
Okay, fine.
And then we'll talk.
All right.
Oh, yeah.
I don't know where to start
with Radiohead though. guitar solo I think you like it when a song changes things up. I do. Perfect, right?
I think you like it when a song changes things up.
I do.
Because this song changes things up.
And how it changes makes the hair on my arms against it.
And I love how it closes too.
It's an unexpected note.
So this is for the unaware.
This is Karma Police by Radiohead.
You know, when the 90s was kind of rocking and rolling, and we remember
it very well,
Nevermind was the album of the 90s,
but I think as time goes on,
this is the album of the 90s.
Okay, Computer. Or how about
The Bends? I'm going to tell you I love this Radiohead
song, but The Bends was my favorite album
from Radiohead. The Bends has
creep on it. I know.
He almost has a smile on his face when he
says that. Strange looking dude, but a
hell of a songwriter. I like to call him
Thommyork instead of Tom, just to annoy
people.
No, do it. Thom.
Have you seen them live i yes i was about to say no but at the international
center in the late 90s i saw radiohead if you can believe that i believe i actually saw them at of
all places molson park and barry wow i saw radiohead yeah that's and i had tickets to see
them when they canceled it because that poor uh the guy got killed on the stage i had tickets to see them when they cancelled it because that poor guy got killed on the stage.
That's right, I remember that.
Yeah, that was awful.
Yeah, that's awful.
Okay, here comes this interesting change.
A note we don't expect.
For a minute.
How did you choose between Karma Police, which I would choose as well, over Paranoid Android?
Because they go together, in my opinion.
Very much so.
I'll tell you why.
Because my big brother brother who lives in
germany he's in a band he loves music he always says that when he hears this song he'll pause and
go i'm thinking about my sister right now that's a good reason yeah is he in rammstein by any chance
rammstein sorry yes he is
it's the only rammstein song I can tell you. For most people.
But Rammstein, I think they're still pretty big in Germany.
I think so too.
I like Nina with the 99 Red Balloons.
Swear to God, still touring, still selling out.
Is she still good looking?
Nina in Germany is, yes, she's actually gorgeous.
I loved, but I only like the German version.
I don't like the English version.
I know, a lot of people are purists.
They like the German version.
It's great.
Yes.
99 Lech Paloma.
It's hard to like anything
that's German version these days.
I know the German.
Yeah, boy.
Okay, this is the close.
I love the close, so I'm gonna turn this up.
I love this.
That's the close. I love the close. So I'm going to turn this up. I love this. Just that little bit of keyboard.
Give me more distortion.
That is the way to end a jam.
Are you kidding me? More jams need to close.
More jams.
I had the goose pimples going on that.
You already dropped this guy's name.
Let's play your next jam and let's
hear about your love of
The Boss.
Well, this
is actually for my husband.
We played this
as our second last song before we got married.
Because when I
hear this song,
this is how I view my husband.
I know it's not E Street, but I love Bruce Solo too. Well, it's Saturday night
You're all dressed up and blue
I've been watching you for a while You're all dressed up and blue.
I've been watching you for a while.
Maybe you've been watching me too.
Someone born when you were born, I won't give up your age,
but would be into Bruce Solo because when we were kids,
born in the USA was the big thing. And he was for a synthesizer and stuff that sounds dated to us now.
Like E Street Band's classic. You've got your horns, you've got
your big full band sound. But I
love both Bruce. I like E Street Band
and I love this. Yeah, and one of my favorite Bruce songs
is the Philadelphia
song. Oh, I know.
Just strip it down.
He's just such a talent.
I think about all these artists
that we lose and I'm like, Tom Petty hit me hard,
but the day Bruce goes is not going to be good for anybody.
He's a legend.
He could go another 30 years.
I hope so. He's very fit.
He's very active and fit.
I think that if my dream came true of being a backup singer,
it would be for Bruce.
I would love nothing more than to stand behind that man for many reasons.
I know.
Watch out, Jeff.
Do you get a pass?
Did he give you a pass for Bruce?
Like a hall pass?
He gave me a pass for Vince Vaughn a few years ago,
but I got to see who...
That's dangerous because that could happen.
Maybe.
Well, and Tom Hardy.
Tom Hardy is somebody that...
I just saw him in
what's the war movie
by the guy who did the Batman.
Oh, Dunkirk. Right. Yeah, that was
really well done. Very well done.
Very well done.
Yeah, no mother man could pass the test
the way Jeff passed the test.
Pauline Rochon is off the market.
Jeff is a joke.
He will say, he'll talk like this as a joke.
He'll be like, honey, they cut off my left arm and still hold you in my right.
He's such a dude.
I'm going to steal that line tonight.
Do it.
She's going to be like, where did you steal that line from?
He's quite romantic.
But I love that he didn't have much say in the music of the wedding.
I mean, he did, but he insisted that this gets played before we get married.
Okay, this is from the album Afterborn in the USA, right?
Or am I mixing this up?
After.
And is that the album with... You know what?
I can't even tell you the name of this album because it's the song that I went to.
Could not cover me.
Oh, Hold Me.
Brilliant Disguise?
No, no, no.
Is that it?
Brilliant Disguise.
And what's the carnival ride one?
Where they go through the Tunnel of Love.
Tunnel of Love.
Tunnel of Love.
I think this is Tunnel of Love.
This is from Tunnel of Love.
Because they came out together?
Am I remembering?
Didn't they come out together?
I think so.
I remember because, you know,
Born Each Day was so massive. And I remember you know, Born in the East Way was so massive
and I remember like we were the right age,
like the anticipation for the new Bruce
and I thought he did two at once.
Brilliant Disguise and Tunnel of Love.
Brilliant Disguise and Tunnel of Love.
And those are both radio hits.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
What's your favorite Bruce Springsteen song?
What's my favorite Bruce Springsteen song?
I can do
like I go back to 70s
I like A Born to Run
like I'll give me a big
big song like that
or
I do
like I said
I like Streets of Philadelphia
a lot
yes
like a lot
this album is from
Tunnel of Love
okay
tougher than the rest
is on it
of course Tunnel of Love
is that
is this
are we talking like
86 or 87
87 1987 there you go good guess that was a big year Is that Is this Are we talking like 86 or 87 87
1987
There you go
Good guess
That was a big year
That's the year
In Excess
Brilliant disguise
Oh
That album changed everything
Didn't it
That's the cassette
I think I listened to
In 1987
Because it was
A listen through
Everything was good
I went back and forth
On that cassette
Like ridiculous amount of times
Kick
We're starting to...
I still like...
I interviewed those guys, minus Michael Hutchins.
But they're just the coolest Aussie boys
you've ever met.
Because all these are like Canadians.
Yeah, they are. They're like our brothers.
Our criminal brothers, because that's where they put
all the criminals, isn't it?
They're all crooks.
Just like the Azores.
That was a penal colony, too.
So that's Bruce Springsteen's Tougher Than the Rest.
Pardon my ignorance.
I never heard that song on the radio.
Was that a radio hit?
Yes.
Because I was listening to too much CFTR at the time,
and they weren't playing that jam.
Because you're a cool kid.
Yes, I was a cool kid.
That means you listened to Tom Rivers?
I did listen to Tom Rivers.
I co-hosted with Tom Rivers.
He was my first radio gig.
He's the reason I'm in radio.
At 99.9.
Where was this with Tom Rivers?
At 640.
640.
Okay.
I was doing airborne traffic and he thought, get her out of that airplane in the studio.
He's the reason why I do radio today.
That's cool because he was my first favorite DJ.
He was everybody's first favorite DJ. He was everybody's first favorite DJ.
He was such a talent.
I hate that he's not alive anymore because he died so young.
Like 50 something, mid 50s or something.
He wasn't even 60 yet.
No, no, no, no.
But is it fair to say he lived one of those typical 70s DJs lifestyles?
Like go big or go home or whatever?
He did.
When I knew him, I think he just had a nip or
two of some drinks and he still smoked cigars but i think in the 80s that boy party yeah for sure
oh tom river yeah i listen to tom rivers on on cftr and i often have cftr he hit every post of
every song i'll have people like i don't know bill hayes or uh bob callahan or like i'll have
probably talk about him a lot and And I ask them about him.
I'm like, just tell me some Tom Rivers stories.
Yeah.
Just go.
I love it.
Yeah.
And did Jesse and Gene take over for Tom Rivers on 640?
That's how my memory has it.
Not.
No.
Humble and Fred came and did 640 Mojo Radio.
But that's Mojo, but that's way later, right?
Not way later.
2001.
No, they did not do mornings at 640, Jesse and Jean.
Yes, they did.
No, they didn't.
Why do I think they did?
They didn't?
Well, I was in the building.
So it was 6...
I was in the building.
You would know, you would know.
So I don't...
I'm probably thinking...
Yeah, I worked at Q then.
So 680.
Yeah.
Maybe that's where they took over for Tom Rivers.
CFTR was 680.
That's probably...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm talking 640.
Yeah, you're talking 640.
Okay. All I remember about 640 yeah you're talking 640 okay
all I remember
about 640 back then
is for a period of time
they were the hog
and they had
that's right
yeah
because I was working
at the X one year
and they had a booth
what do you call it
like a booth thing there
and it was the hog
C-H-O-G
640
that's right
they played lots of rock and roll
lots of Guns N' Roses
are you ready to kick out
this is by the way
I mentioned that
I love that Radiohead jam.
This jam we're about to play
is one of my all-time favorites.
Again?
I picked another one
of your favorites?
Well, we have to have
some overlap here.
Are you ready to go?
Come on, of all the songs
in the world.
Okay, hit me.
Stop.
Yeah.
Pixies.
And now I'm watching
Fight Club in my head.
That's what happens when I hear this song.
I forgot that that song was in the fight club.
Prominently.
Really?
Yeah.
This part, this part.
I've seen the Pixies twice.
Amazing.
Once with Kim Deal.
I liked,
she's in the Breeders, right?
That's right.
Cannonball is a great chance.
Why isn't that on your list?
That's what I'm talking about.
That easily could have been on my list.
Because that influenced a lot of my music taste.
Frank Black solo.
Oh, teenager of the year.
This wrinkle in time can't get me.
Headache.
That's the jam I like.
Headache.
I love covers of this song.
I love this song.
I have an instrumental of this song.
Just like violins. See? covers of this song. I love this song. I have an instrumental of this song, just like violin.
Really?
See?
He's always making his anger beautiful,
doesn't he?
When he gets mad,
it's still pretty.
Yeah, this band,
I think this band,
without this band,
you don't get like,
you don't get the
Nirvana sound and stuff.
No.
This is such a
sentimental band.
I think Doolittle,
that album,
was so unique,
so different.
I think the Pixies are going to come open for Weezer at the Budweiser stage this summer.
I think so, too.
I just saw Weezer at Massey Hall like two months ago.
That's a good venue to see Weezer.
It was good.
Not Weezer.
No, no.
Pixies.
Pixies, right.
It was good, yeah.
I was going to say, yeah.
I've never seen Weezer, though, and I still love those boys.
I've seen them.
I still love those boys.
Yeah, Weezer is just,
they're being measured against their earlier stuff,
which happens to bands,
and it's tough for bands. I'm going to tell you,
I'm not as happy about new Weezer as old Weezer.
No one is.
I guess I fall into that.
But no one is.
I'm not either.
We just want Pinkerton again. I like the Blue Album, or whatever the first one was called. The no one is. I'm not either. We just want Pinkerton again.
I like the
Blue Album
or whatever the
first one was.
The Blue Album
with My Name
is Jonah
or the Sweater
song.
Yeah.
Undone.
The Sweater
song.
And Buddy
Holly's on there.
Oh yeah.
But they did
do, what's that
song about
Summertime?
With the
Muppets?
No, it all
had like puppies
and it was all
like baby
animals.
I can't find songs when I'm hearing this.
I used to be able to hit that note when I was much younger listening to this.
But I like that the Pixies kind of went with that surf beat for certain songs.
Like, you could never put the Pixies in any category.
That's what I like about them.
You can't say, oh, they sound like the Pixies, because nobody sounds like the Pixies.
You're right, Noah.
Great choice.
Inspired choice.
And Where Is My Mind, that's the Pixies jam I love the most.
So, thank you.
Oh, good.
And it sounds so good in the headphones.
And the haunting end here.
See, both Karma Police
and this have great endings. Here we go.
Spooky.
Perfect.
Colleen, you ready for another jam?
Yeah, I'm curious.
I forget what's on my list now.
I like the fact that you're going to be surprised
by your own jams.
I am surprised every time, yeah.
I love it.
Oh, yeah.
Where do I begin with New Order?
Crank it. But if you want my girlfriends to dance, you can play this song or anything you want. I stood there beside myself Thinking hard about the weather
Thinking about a friend of mine
Suggested we'd go out together
But I knew it was far
There's something about that bass line
I will never, ever get tired of it
Ever
Are you a fan of it? No, I I will never, ever get tired of New Order. Ever.
Are you a fan of it?
No, I used to wrestle a long time ago.
And Bizarre Love Triangle was the song the coach would play when we were running laps at the beginning.
Oh, that's good.
So the beat always makes me think I've got to exercise or something.
But I always prefer Joy Division to New Order.
Can you even really compare?
I know that you have to, I think.
Well, no, you can't because the vocals are so different.
I always wondered if it's, is it, I don't know if we're supposed to see gender anymore.
Maybe you're not supposed to.
But I always felt like guys prefer Joy Division and girls prefer New Order.
That's how I always felt. Really?
Is that out to lunch? My New Wave
friends and my brother, they were all
about New Order and Pet Shop Boys.
See, what do I know? Oh yeah, Pet Shop Boys were great too.
Joy Division was so short-lived. I mean, the lead
singer killed himself when he was 21.
Like they didn't, you know, radio
by transmission.
You know, it has its place, but New Order,
they were the birth of this kind of music,
not Joy Division. Alan Cross will probably
fight me on that.
But New Order for me.
So this is Perfect Kiss.
But honestly, anything from any
New Order album could have easily been.
Like, I'm going skiing this weekend
with a bunch of girlfriends
I make all the playlists
this is on the playlist
you have a good life
you do fun things
I do really fun things
honestly
I gotta tell you
I love
I love my friends
and I love my work
like you're at
like a cool brunch place
all hung over
on like whatever that was
a Saturday morning
yeah but I don't have kids.
I can do this stuff.
Mind you, the hangovers last.
I'm starting to think maybe you made the right call there.
Like that sounds like a trade I'd make.
Like think of your life.
You're going skiing with girlfriends.
I'm going skiing.
Three days later, I'm going to Mexico.
Yeah.
I want to go to Italy in June.
I want to go to Greece.
I want to.
I've been to Italy.
Yeah.
Beautiful.
Where have you been?
I have been. I will tell you the order. In fact, I went to Rome. I've never been to Greece. I've been to Italy. Yeah? I've been too. Where have you been? I have been.
I will tell you the order, in fact.
I went to Rome.
I've never been to Rome.
Florence.
Venice.
Milan.
Oh, Cinque Terre.
Am I saying that right?
The five towns.
It's on the Riviera.
You hike between the towns.
If you see a picture of this, you'll be like, oh, I've seen that picture a hundred times.
That might be the most beautiful
place I've been in my life, maybe.
Italy is a country. It's sickening, isn't it?
I'm such a fan of the food.
I would go for the food. I would go for the food, too.
I would just eat a tomato like an apple there.
Just drop on the floor.
Oh, a Coke. It's water
in a Coke bottle. that's how ghetto i am
that's pretty ghetto gelato everyday gelato and uh olive oil what do you call that the pizza
margarita like i think it was six euros typically like six euros and you would be so full afterwards
yeah and their cheap wine is the best one you've ever had see this is the baseline that i'm talking
about this is typical new order and then you put a little cowbell in. Three, two, one, and.
I feel like doing like a 20 minute workout or whatever.
See, this is the part. Because I've loved this music for so long, I can't decipher whether it
would sound old to new ears.
Like to me, it transcends.
So I'd love to hear what a 16-year-old thinks of this.
Does it sound really brutal 80s with synthesizer or is it something that they could get into?
Because I feel like the Smiths don't sound like anything
that's ever happened again.
I think I have a 16-year-old.
I should ask him what he thinks.
I would say this sound we're listening to right now reeks of the 80s, like completely.
Really?
And I know that it's kind of back.
But there's bad 80s and then there's good 80s.
What's bad 80s?
There's bad 80s?
Of course there's lots of bad 80s.
I don't know.
Terrible 80s.
But no, New Order is not bad 80s.
No.
New Order is...
In fact, a lot of modern tracks kind of try to emulate that
song now.
Yeah.
You hear it in
Arcade Fire.
Like a Taylor Swift
or whatever.
It goes all over the
place for sure.
Awesome jam.
Oh, now I have to
play a jam of a
recently departed
individual.
But let's hear it and
let's talk about your
next jam.
Oh, yeah.
It's got to be Tom.
This song is very
special to me.
So listen to this song with different ears when I tell you Tom Petty didn't write it.
It was written by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics.
Dave Stewart? I did not know that.
So listen to this now in picture.
Eurythmics, okay? They I did not know that. So listen to this now and picture Eurythmics.
Okay?
They're in my head right now.
Yeah.
You'll look at the song differently.
The desperation in this song kills my heart. Whatever you're looking for Hey!
Don't come around here no more
I'm giving up
Stop
I'm giving up
Stop
I'm giving up Stop I'm giving up
Stop
I'm waiting any longer
Can you hear your own mix in that?
I do hear it, and I did not know that, so
Yeah
That's why it's
Don't come around here no more
It's the one Tom Petty song that sounds so different than anything else he's done, right?
Yeah
Don't come around here no more Still sounds great, though The one Tom Petty song that sounds so different than anything else he's done, right? Yeah.
Still sounds great, though. I don't feel you anymore I got to see him perform this live in July.
The song, his last show in Toronto, yeah.
I felt really lucky being there.
None of us knew that he wouldn't be here.
He's healthy, still touring.
He did, I think he did say this was going to be his last tour,
but my God,
what a shock.
I,
uh,
that one hit hard.
I was,
yeah,
I was shocked too.
Cause he,
cause he,
like you said,
he was active
and he was still
out touring and great.
And again,
what was his age?
Is he early 60s?
He wasn't 70.
Yeah,
he was in his 60s.
When we were kids, do you remember 60 sounded like ancient?
Like people could die of old age at 60?
I know.
Now when I think of 60, it's like, oh my God, he died at 60?
Like that's a puppy.
My mom's 70 and bikes every day and does swim aerobics and travels alone.
And she's like the youngest.
So it's wild.
I guess it's all about lifestyle.
It's just...
Tom Petty wasn't much of a party
in his later years either.
You know, I'm an expert
because I watched the four-hour documentary
on Tom Petty.
That was pretty good.
It was a bit long,
but it was good.
Yeah, you have to do it in two parts,
I think.
I had a guest on this show,
Barry Davis.
Do you know Barry Davis
he
if you watched
a lot of
Blue Jay games
on Sportsnet
you would have
seen Barry
not last year
because they
let him go
and they just
went with Hazel May
but prior to last year
oh I do know him then
yeah
he's in a
Tom Petty
cover band
oh he is
he's a singer
and
he worships Tom Petty.
He just adores Tom Petty and he
was raving about that documentary
so I had to check it out. It was fantastic.
He was the youngest member of the Traveling Wilburys.
Oh, Traveling Wilburys.
A few of those songs could have been on my list.
Handle With Care and End of the Line.
Oh, at the end of the line.
Yeah.
When it's all right, even when you're old and gray.
Oh, love this part.
Yeah, here we go.
Give me some guitar.
Ah! Whatever you're after Oh Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh Oh Oh Yeah, pretty cool.
I mean, there's so many Tom Petty songs that could have been on that, you know.
American Girl, my geez.
American Girl.
Tom Petty songs that could have been on that.
You know, American Girl.
My geez.
American Girl.
That's what the Strokes last night opens with the riff from American Girl.
Oh, yeah?
It's like the same thing.
If you can hear them in your head.
Ding, ding, ding.
Pause.
Ding, ding, ding.
It's the same thing. It's the same thing.
Right.
And it's killer.
You're absolutely right.
That guy was just.
He was the coolest.
He was cool.
Hands down.
I listened to his radio show too on Sirius Satellite.
Tom Petty had his own radio show.
Oh, did he?
I can't afford Sirius Satellite radio.
I can't afford not to have it.
I'm addicted to it.
Oh, man.
Oh, Tom Petty, we miss you.
We've been talking a lot about Goodfellas today.
So let's play
your next jam. Most important Stone
song.
Did you watch 10 Feet from Startup?
I did, yes. So you know
the story behind this. Mary Clayton.
Yes. Are you kidding me?
Which, by the way, I bought
some of her albums on iTunes
because I wanted to hear her solo stuff.
It's freaking incredible.
There's no reason why these women couldn't draw a solo album.
Well, I'll stop talking and jack it up
when it comes to that whole rape-murder thing she does
with a hitch in her voice where it breaks or whatever.
It's just, oh my God.
You can listen to it isolated.
You can hear just that. And you can hear Mick. You can listen to it isolated. You can hear just that.
And you can hear Mick,
when you listen to it,
you can hear Mick go like,
yeah,
like you can hear him like,
and it's a great story.
She got hauled out of bed
two in the morning
with her mother's name.
And she was pregnant,
is that right?
Eight months pregnant.
Eight months pregnant.
Two takes. ¶¶
¶¶ Great jam.
I think it's my favorite Ron Stone song.
I think.
I know.
And then there's all this stuff on XL on Main Street.
It's so cool.
Did you read Keith's book?
No.
You've got to read that book. It is so fun. It's so cool. Did you read Keith's book? No. You've got to read that book.
It is so fun.
It's so interesting.
Someone else kicked this out.
I want to say Damien Cox.
Let me find that.
Did you watch Muscle Shoals?
Loved it.
Wasn't that insane?
You give me a good music documentary, I'm going to watch it.
That to me is my favorite music documentary.
That's tremendous.
No, you're right.
One of my favorites too.
I just want to hang out with Keith.
It's amazing Keith is still going, eh?
I want to sit in Jamaica and some island with him.
Let him beat my hair and smoke pot.
But did you think Keith would hit 60, let alone 70?
Nobody thought he'd hit 50, for God's sake.
That's funny.
He can hold a day's worth of rainwater in that face.
To quote my legendary friend Larry Silver.
Larry Silver, there's a name.
Yeah.
He was on CFTR.
Yes, he was.
And Evelyn Macro.
Here we go. There's the scream.
Oh.
It was Brad Faye again.
That's the second jam you shared with Brad Faye.
We should be together.
I think it means something.
Yes.
The second jam you shared with Brad Faye.
We should be together.
I think it means something.
Yes.
I'm going to predict Mick Jagger lives to be 100.
He could.
He's small.
Like pure breed dogs that are big, that live long.
He's small.
And I think he's been like treating his body right forever. I get the idea like Evian water.
Yeah. And he's got. I get the idea. It's a temple for nerds.
He's got young kids all the time.
I keep them young like Ron Stewart.
Do we know how many kids he has right now? I don't know. They're all really good looking.
Because he does it with models.
He does it. What does he do?
He does it with models.
He does it with models.
That's how you make good looking kids.
I guess so.
models. Yeah. That's how you make good looking kids. I guess so.
Of course we're talking about Goodfellas.
Yeah, this song's
perfect in Goodfellas.
Speaking of Rolling Stones, I often
sing You Can't Always Get What You Want
to my three-year-old. Oh, that's sweet.
Did she pick that well?
Yes, I did. Or he sang it.
No, don't worry. It's very confusing. We have a lot of children. There's a boy, a girl, and a boy and a girl. So the he. Yeah, that was a he. No, don't worry.
It's very confusing.
You have a lot of children.
There's a boy, a girl, and a boy and a girl.
So the three-year-old's a boy.
She has four kids.
Yeah.
I have four kids.
How do you have time to do this?
This is noon.
This is lunchtime.
Daddy's working.
Shut up.
Everybody is in daycare or school right now.
So that's how I can do this.
No, it's nuts.
Tonight will be nuts. You know, all four are here. And it can do this okay no it's nuts uh tonight will be nuts
you know all four are here and uh it'll be crazy but it's a good crazy but yeah um because he'll
always want to do something and you say no and he's like no but i want it and it's like i always
think you can't always get which is still still a tremendous jam in its own right that's a classic
i keep knocking this over but no one knows that but you and I, Colleen.
Okay.
Sure.
All right.
Speaking of
late great rock icons.
Yeah.
Here's your second
last jam.
Okay.
Woo!
Coolest riff in rock
right here.
I would love to do that.
Like just best our 10 favorite riffs.
See, this is what I'm talking about.
If you give assignments to music people like that,
we can play into it.
But that's a whole different show.
Like you can come back again.
You're only in the junction.
Well, then let me do my top 10 riffs then.
Okay.
Because speaking of Rolling Stones,
Satisfaction is a great riff.
Like there's a lot of... Yeah, but would it make my list?
Probably not.
We got to do that.
Okay.
This guy has a lot of great riffs, this guy.
That's Slash, by the way.
Okay, I know, but it has an Iron Maiden skull up to it,
so I thought maybe it was Ed.
That's the appetite for destruction slash.
Yeah, Guns N' Roses is fine.
Whatever.
I saw David Bowie in concert once.
That blew my mind.
When did you see him?
Which tour?
He was with... No, he was with Moby.
Do you remember when they did a tour?
Are you sure you're not thinking of the Nine Inch Nails guy?
Nope. Trent Reznor? No.
That's a different tour. I would never forget seeing Trent Reznor.
Nope. It was Moby.
I don't remember the Moby.
It was Moby and David Boy at the Molson Amphitheater.
It would have been maybe
2003?
2004?
And I got to go backstage
and I met David Bowie.
Wow.
I had all of 1.2 seconds with him.
I got to shake his hand
and tell him that he was amazing
and super talented.
And he said,
thank you very much.
He said, tell me something I don't know.
Yeah, he's like, I know, I'm David Bowie.
I was about to do the Flight of the Conchords Bowie.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, he was a mensch. He's like, I know, I'm David Bowie. I was about to do the Flight of the Conchords, Bowie. Yeah.
No,
he was a mensch.
He was a dude.
The closest I came to meeting Bowie
was having on this show
Em Griner.
Do you know Em Griner?
She's a Canadian
singer-songwriter.
She was a backup singer
on David Bowie's tour.
You're kidding.
No.
They were like
really tight.
So she was like, and she was on the week before Bowie died tour. You're kidding. No. They were like really tight. Like so she was like
and she was on like
the week before Bowie died
and we were talking
about Bowie a lot
in that episode.
Wow.
Yeah.
And it's like
Let me guess
not a bad word
came out of her mouth
about him like that.
No.
He's like
He was great to work with
I heard.
Yeah.
Freaking right.
And I like how he went out.
Like I want to go out
that way.
Like he put together
that final album and that final video
and he's like, this is how I'm
going out. My terms or whatever
and bam. Photo shoot a couple days before
where it looked quite good.
He kept it a secret.
It was funny because some, it was
rumored that he was ill, but it never came
from him or his people. And that's why
his death was also shocking.
Nobody really saw it coming.
And he was only, I think, 71, I think. Yeah, he was, yeah.
But so many Bowie songs fitting in on this list.
This was a hard assignment.
You know, his name was David Jones.
Yeah, and he had to change it.
Absolutely.
Bowie sounds cooler anyway.
Now, so many girls born in the 80s and 90s are named Bowie, thanks to him.
Speaking of the 90s, so you and I are similar age,
and my list would be full of 90s jams, but you only have two.
But easily, mine could have been full of 90s jams.
I could have put garbage on that list.
I could have put tons of
bands on there. I'm only happy when it rains.
But yeah, so
you have Radiohead and you have
Pixies. And I believe that's your only
90s jams on this list. Well, now I forget what my
last pick song was. I purposely am closing
with this one because this song is like
a time machine to me.
I know we're still on David Bowie here.
Fantastic.
But this jam,
which we're going to play next,
takes me right back
to childhood
and hearing it on the radio.
Childhood?
It's just such a...
Yeah.
Now I really am curious
to hear what my pick was.
If it brings you back to childhood.
Yeah.
And I was a child
in the early 80s, I want to say,
is what this brings me back to.
I'm not sure what year it came out, but are you ready?
Yeah. You're going to be as surprised
as anybody with your final pick. Well, it's my song. I shouldn't be that
surprised.
Oh, yeah.
Well, this is an important song.
It's the first time
I can recall ever hearing what gay was
and what gay means and watching that video
and how he's ostracized.
Remember the swimming pool?
I didn't know that there were people that were different.
I didn't understand sexuality
and I didn't understand why he was having a hard time.
Because when you're kids, you're colorblind,
you're cultureblind, you're, you know,
you're sex blind.
I didn't know.
So this is what I learned what gay was.
And how beautiful is this song?
Beautiful song?
Yeah.
It's funny,
I try to think,
when did I learn what gay was?
I think it was Boy George,
I think.
But he never really came out
as gay.
No, but you're right.
You're right.
Like, this was the first time
we're like, wow,
he's being teased
because he's gay
right
yeah
oh I love this song
listen to that listen to that voice.
Jeez.
Bronski beat.
Small town boy. Jimmy Thorville.
Yeah, his parents turned their back on him.
I mean, in this video, but I don't know what happened in his personal life.
I'm trying, you know, I can't remember the video.
Like, I'm trying.
Really?
I know.
Was it, you're watching this on, like, video hits?
Or, like, where are you seeing this video?
I would have watched this on...
Like, Samantha Taylor's video hits?
Yeah.
Because it's not on Toronto Rocks.
It could have been on Toronto Rocks.
Brad Giffen.
Brad Giffen, yeah.
Yeah.
This was a huge song.
And John Major, too. John Major. Yeah, John Major first. I. This was a huge song.
And John Major too.
John Major.
I kind of have a crush on him.
He's passed away too young too from cancer.
John Major's gone.
I don't think I knew that John Major died.
Oh no, that's awful.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
If I did know that, I'd have forgotten.
That's terrible.
Yeah, watch this video when you get a chance.
Do you happen to know, like, are we talking 84?
Like, what are we, is it 83, 84? I would have been about 10 or 11 when this song came out.
Yeah.
Do you want me to look it up?
I'll look it up.
Okay, that's how I remember it.
Like 83, 84.
Does he beat?
That beat
takes you right back.
It really does. That's a very 80s beat.
1984.
There you go.
I was 11. So that makes sense. 1984 there you go you know what there you go I would have
I was 11
so that makes sense
Jimmy Somerville
you just gave away
your age by the way
that's fine
I'm 43
and I'm proud of it
okay there you go
I'm proud of it
you know I'm 43
um
you are?
yeah
did you have a birthday
already this year?
yeah
no no
November
I think you're
wrong about your age
I'm 43 no I think you're wrong about your age.
I'm 43.
No, I think you're 44.
Oh my God, I think I am 44. You have to be because, not to spoil anything, but you told me your calendar.
I'm not weirding you out there.
I actually don't remember then.
I sometimes forget if I'm 42 or 43, but I know I'm 43.
Oh my God, I'm 44?
And I know I'm younger than you.
I'm 44?
You're 44.
Jimmy Somerville should be crying about my age for God's sakes.
I'm about to be gay.
You know what I say? You're still here.
It doesn't matter. Your age is just a measurement of time
on Earth. You want
that number to grow. Time is relative
though and it goes by quickly.
But what are you going to do? Do you have control over that?
None.
You have no control over time. None.
Enjoy it. You're 43. No, I'm 44. You time. None. Enjoy it.
You're 43.
No, I'm 44.
You're 44.
I'm 43.
Yeah.
The other jam, similar to this, that if I hear it, it's a cover of...
Hold on here.
I got to... Yeah, it's hard to do stuff when you're listening to music, right?
Because I'm stuck in this beat.
Yeah.
A song that brings you back
to that time?
A cover.
Massive hit in the early 80s.
Let's do it this way.
A cover.
It's a cover,
but people think...
I don't know if...
At the time,
I didn't know it was a cover.
I only found out
it was an adult cover.
Okay.
I want to guess it.
Keep going.
Give me more.
Um...
Run away. Run away. Turn away. Run away. Turn away. Keep going. Give me more.
Yaz was big for me.
Upstairs at Eric's.
That was also a big scene.
I had a cool new wave older brother.
That helps, you know. Who eventually followed the death.
I didn't have this,
so I had to listen to the radio
and figure shit out.
Right.
eventually I didn't have this so I had to listen to the radio and figure shit out something love tainted love soft sell 1981 okay that's an old Motown song right yeah I and at
the time when it was on the radio all the time tainted love and I love to don't don't like I
get lost in it like I absolutely loved it as a kid where does your love go yeah exactly but at
the time you don't know what our cover is like I never had it no one was there to say hey you know it's a
cover like i had to kind of like years later i'm talking like i'm gonna say 10 years later i learned
tainted love was a cover yeah but it doesn't happen as much anymore no now it doesn't happen
ever now like now never and now we got weird things going on like portugal the man will have a hit and you'll
be like in the car and your daughter my 13 year old's all into this song and i'll be like that's
i feel please tell me mr postman right yeah exactly it is exactly that like that is what
the song is yeah it's so funny i know but you know how old you sound when you do that to your kids
i do it anyway call me i don't care, I say, no, just so you know,
that is this song. And then I'll play that song.
They'll be like, oh yeah, that is that song.
Whatever, mine's better.
Did you enjoy kicking out the jams with me?
I loved it.
This was really fun.
But I want a more definite assignment now.
So you really, that was a sincere
complaint. Like I thought you were doing a bit
there because I said to me, just tell
me your 10 favorite jams of all time. Yeah.
Not good enough. Deeper.
But that's a different show.
Like this is your 10 jams. I'm telling you, let's
do a different show.
Alright, we're going to do it. We'll do a different show. I would love it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you're in
Hamilton and then you're coming back to the Junction.
But you're on my way home. Right. It's so
convenient for you to, at this time, it's soction. Yeah, but you're on my way home. Right. It's so convenient for you to...
At this time, it's so convenient.
What time do you want me here tomorrow?
This is the...
Honestly, come tomorrow.
Lunch is a perfect time.
Okay.
It just means I have to...
I need more time to get...
You have to give me my assignment first.
I am...
I have to go now.
I'm starving.
On that note...
Oh, I love this song.
Remember these guys?
They were here, and they played for me where you're sitting right now.
Ron Hawkins came in twice.
He's been on the show twice.
And they gave me this magnet that my fridge isn't magnetized, but here it is.
Do the Right Now, their new album.
How is the new album?
It's good.
I saw them at the Danforth Music Hall, I don't know, I want to say four months ago or something like that.
They're still great.
They're amazing.
And that's Shakespeare in My Butt. It's one of great. Like they're amazing. And that's Shakespeare.
My butt is one of my favorite albums of all time.
And that's what this is from.
This is Rosie and gray closes every episode or even closed your episode 97.
