During November's episode of Toast
with Rob Proust and Bob Ouellette,
we kicked out our favorite radio jams.
I took this opportunity to play
Pucka Orchestra's Listen to the Radio,
which is a great cover
of a Tom Robinson song
you'll never hear.
So that doesn't qualify
for this F-O-T-M-K FOTM KOTJ episode of Toronto Mic'd.
This is about those crappy covers of a song you love. As with all art, it's very subjective.
And to that point, at least one of these FOT-T-J songs is a cover I quite like,
and another is a cover I absolutely love.
I'll lead things off with a popular cover of a song I came to love years after its release, when it played a key role in the Sopranos series finale.
in the Sopranos series finale. If you listen to Stu and Cam and me
kicking out screen-enhanced jams on Pandemic Fridays,
you heard me play Journey's Don't Stop Believing.
This Glee cover of that song is absolutely horrendous
and a perfect fit for this FOTM KOTJ episode of Toronto Mic'd. train going anywhere.
Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit.
He took the midnight train going anywhere. A singer in a smoky room A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people
Living just to find emotion
Parting somewhere in the night Working hard to get my feel
Everybody wants a thrill
Paying anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues
And though the movie never ends
It grows on and on and on and on
Strangers, we're reading
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Stranger people Living just to find emotion Hiding somewhere inside
Don't stop believing Hold on to that feeling
Stay like people
Don't stop believing
Hold on to that feeling
Streetlight people
Don't stop
VP of Sales here.
My crappy cover song is an abomination.
It's a blight on music.
It's a song that the Village Voice once named the worst cover song of the 2000s.
And I have to agree with them.
I was thinking about a couple of different options for this.
agree with them. I was thinking about a couple of different options for this. And then I heard this song on Spotify this weekend, and it reminded me of how just offensive it is. And so this
had to be my choice. And I'm speaking big yellow taxi by counting crows counting crows
as a band are fine i i enjoyed their first couple albums um this this is this is repulsive it's
joanie's original uh is a beautiful sort of uh anticorporate, pro-environment song talking about how
the beauty of nature is being privatized and paved over, very apt for some of the things
we're experiencing in Toronto these days. But this is just a really abysmal attempt to corporatize and remake a song
that didn't need it. At least not in this way. The Counting Crows put nothing additional into
the song and it's, uh, it's depressing to listen to. It was on the Two Weeks Notice soundtrack with the movie with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant.
And it's disgusting.
So please do not enjoy Counting Crows.
Featuring Vanessa Carlton, by the way.
She also contributed to this monstrosity.
Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows.
Go fuck yourself, Adam Duritz.
Don't it always seem to go
that you don't know what you got
till it's gone
It'd be a paradise to put up a fucking line
You took all the trees and put them in a tree museum
And you charged the people a dollar and a half to see them
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
Till it's gone
You pay your paradise
And put up a fucking line
Hey farmer, farmer
Put away your DDT
I don't care about spots on my apples
Leave me the birds and the bees
Please
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
Till it's gone
They pay paradise
To put up a fucking love
And now they pay paradise
To put up a fucking love
One night Listen, late last night I heard the screen door sway
And a big yellow taxi took my girl away
Now don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you got till it's
gone They paved paradise, put up a parking lot
Hey now now Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise, put up a parking lot
Why not?
They pay paradise to put up a parking lot
Hey, hey, hey
Pay paradise to put up a parking lot
I don't wanna give it
Why you wanna give it?
Why you wanna give it all away? And I don't wanna give it, why you wanna give it, why you wanna give it all away?
And I don't wanna give it, I just wanna give it, cause you're giving it all away
I don't wanna give it, why you wanna give it, why you wanna give it all away?
Cause you're giving it all, giving it all away
Why you wanna? Why do you want it?
Why do you want it?
She gives it all away
Hey, babe paradise
You put up a parking lot it's FOTM Rob Del Mundo here thanks for letting me vent Mike if you want me to talk about crappy
covers please let me get started with oh my gosh Luke Combs doing that god-awful country music
version of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, a classic.
I'm so happy for Tracy that she won a country music award for that song.
But Luke, what are you doing?
I don't really need to hear another artist do another artist's song just for the sake of doing it.
What makes a good cover version great is if it artistically changes the song.
is if it artistically changes the song.
Listen to, for example,
Suzy and the Banshees doing Dear Prudence,
changing the tempo of the Beatles classic song.
That's a great cover.
If it's just Luke Coombs doing Fast Car,
or geez, I don't know,
Weezer doing Africa, another overrated one,
I don't need to hear another artist do another artist's song for the sake of doing a cover.
I can go down to my local bar
and watch a cover band do that for $5. Thanks, Mike. Hope to see you soon. See you at the next TMLX. Any place is better Starting from zero, got nothing to lose Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
And I got a plane to get us out of here
Been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just to cross the border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Fine to see what it means to be living
See my old man's got a problem
He live with a bottle that's the way it is
Said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's gotta take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live or die this way
So I remember when we were driving
Driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your
hump-filled nights wrapped around my shoulder and I, I had a feeling that I belonged, I,
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone.
You got a fast car We go cruising, entertain ourselves
Still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find a work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburb
So I remember when we were driving
Driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I had a feeling that I belonged
I, I had a feeling I could be someone
Be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
We stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm feeling nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I had a feeling that I belonged
I, I had a feeling I could be someone
Be someone, be someone, be someone You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way Hi Mike, it's Leslie Villian here.
My nomination for a crappy cover of a song that I actually like,
because there are a lot of crappy covers of songs that I don't even really like, I'll get to in a minute but I'm going to give an honorable mention first and both of these
come from the same album. Back in 1991 there was a tribute album called Two Rooms celebrating the
songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin where popular musicians artists of the time were
re-recording Elton John songs and putting their
own flair on them some of them were really good The Who doing Saturday Night's All Right for
Fighting was fantastic one of my personal favorites from that album Alita Adams doing
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me also outstanding spectacular and then there were two that I think were really bad. So the runner up for bad cover
was Kate Bush doing Rocketman. It had some weird reggae vibe to it with some Celtic violins in
thrown in for good measure. Not really sure how all that fit together. But my absolute worst cover,
because I actually really love the original song, is Wilson Phillips doing Daniel.
It's insipid. It has no emotion in it at all. And it's just generally a really crappy song by
kind of a crappy band. Like, there isn't really anything other than the fact that they had famous parents that and maybe some
nice voices that Wilson Phillips can contribute contribute to music so that is my nomination
Elton John that's my growing up music that's what I listened to as a kid and Daniel was one of the
first songs I think Crocodile Rock was probably my first song that I remember hearing of his.
But Daniel was definitely one of those songs that I loved from the very beginning. So to hear Wilson Phillips totally butcher it, that is my winner on a plane.
I can see the red taillights heading for Spain.
I can see Daniel waving goodbye.
But it looks like Daniel
must be the clouds in my eyes.
He says it's pretty, though I've never been.
Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh, and you should know cause he's been there enough
Lord, I miss Daniel
Oh, I miss him so much
Daniel, my brother Oh, I miss him so much
Oh
Daniel, my brother
You are older than me
Do you still feel the pain
Of the scars that won't heal?
Your eyes have died
But you see more than I
Daniel, you're a star in the face of the sky I miss Daniel
Oh, I miss him so much
Daniel, my brother
You are older than me
Do you still feel the pain
Of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes can't die
But you'll see more tonight
Daniel, you're a star
In the face of the sky
Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane
I can see the reptile eyes headed for Spain
Oh, God. Must be the clouds in my eyes.
Hey, Mike.
Mike Moniz here from Hamilton, a.k.a. Hamilton Mike.
And when it came to crappy covers, there's so many to choose from that I had to stop and think.
Whether it be Celine Dion doing You Shook Me All Night Long.
Though I don't think that was ever officially released.
It was only during her Vegas shows, so that wouldn't count.
shows so that wouldn't count then there is fallout boys recent reinvention of billy joel's we didn't start the fire which i know many criticize and even billy joel doesn't seem to like the song
but i do like the original as a time capsule and fallout boys attempt to reinvent it and recast it with more
modern lyrics just is so bad but ultimately i think the worst offender my opinion has to be a new metal band that took one of the greatest classic rock songs ever and just stripped it of any real meaning and emotion.
And just, it's just horrible.
It's just so vanilla, whereas the original had some light and shade and it just kind of shifted around.
And you went from this beautiful
soft ballad to almost this rock song and then back to this ballad and when limp biscuit did
behind blue eyes by the who it's just oh it's just horrible i'm sorry and if anyone likes it
honestly have you ever heard the original?
Because really?
You prefer that over the original?
Or you think it even comes close?
So my vote for crappy cover, Limp Bizkit doing the Who's behind blue eyes.
No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man behind blue eyes
And no one knows what it's like to be hated, to be faded, to telling only lies
But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be
I have hours only lonely
My love is vengeance that's never free No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you
No one bites back his heart
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through
But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be.
Only lonely, my love is vengeance, that's never free. I-A-G-I-L-E-G No one knows what it's like to be mistreated
To be defeated
Behind blue eyes
And no one knows how to say
That they're sorry
And don't worry
I'm not telling lies
But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my car just seems to be
I have hours, I'm only lonely Only lonely, my love is vengeance, that's never free
No one knows what it's like to be the bad man, to be the sad man, behind blue eyes.
Hey Toronto Mike, Joe Louis here.
The list of terrible covers is long and painful, but when I focused my search on the Canadian
music scene, it was clear to me that there was no greater musical injustice than the one inflicted on Bruce Coburn by the bare naked ladies with their trite, sappy, and wholly
unconvincing rendition of Coburn's Lovers in a Dangerous Time. B&L's attempt to kick at the
darkness till it bleeds daylight doesn't even have the strength to kick over a broken sandwich board
in Scarborough. And it goes from bad to worse.
Just compare BNL's version to one of Coburn's many stripped-down
acoustic performances of the song.
The ladies are rendered unlistenable.
So, I've gone and slandered the bare-naked ladies.
All that's left to do is lock the doors
and go to sleep with a knife.
Brian Dunn should be here any moment now,
looking for revenge. and open our eyes One minute you're waiting
for the sky to fall
And next you're dazzled
by the beauty of it all
Lovers
in a dangerous time Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This fragrant skin, this hair like lace
Spirits open to a thrust of grace
Never a breath you can't afford to waste Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time Lovers in a dangerous time guitar solo
When your lover's in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Gotta kick it to darkness
till it bleeds daylight
Lovers
in a dangerous time
Lovers
in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
We were lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers, lover, lover Lover, lover, lover
I yield to no one in my respect and love of Roy Orbison.
I was lucky enough to see Roy late in his life at Massey Hall,
probably the greatest concert that I ever made it out to.
Just such incredible range and just so compelling.
No one should try and cover Roy Orbison.
I don't know that there are three voices in modern times that can compete with his.
But Don McLean definitely should not have tried to cover Roy Orbison's crying.
crying. Don McLean, famous for American Pie, kind of the fluky hit along the lines of Jonathan Livingston's Seagull or something like that. I have no idea why it succeeded, but Don McLean has about a half an octave range and Roy Orbison highs and lows and emotion and
Don McLean sucks it all out crying I don't even believe his eyes are watering
I was all right for a while.
I could smile for a while.
But when I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight.
When you stopped to say hello
and though you wished me
well
you couldn't tell
that I'd
been crying
over you
crying over you Crying over you
Then you said this so long
Left me standing all alone
Alone and crying
Crying
Crying
Crying
It's hard to understand To understand That the touch of your hand
Can start me crying
I thought that I was over you
But it's true, so true
I love you even more than I did before
But darling, what can I do?
Oh, you don't love me
And I'll always be
Lying over you
Lying over you
Yes, now you're gone
And from this moment on
I'll be crying
Crying
Crying
Crying
I'm crying
Crying I know that many people feel that Madonna is an icon,
but when I read that she covered this song, I was flabbergasted. I could make those people dance And maybe they'd be happy for a while
Did you write the book of love?
And do you have faith in God above?
If the Bible tells you so
Now do you believe in rock and roll?
And can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him
Cause I saw you dancing in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I did love rhythm and blues Dancing in the gym You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I did just rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage, run-through-luck
With a big carnation and a brick of chalk
But I knew that I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singing
Bye bye Miss American Pie
Drown my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die
This will be the day that I die This will be the day that I die I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
Well, I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
Well, now in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the free men I admire the most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. They caught the Levy But the Levy was dry
And good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this a weekday that I die
This a weekday that I die Fire, fire, this American fire
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing, this'll be the day that I die This'll be right back. We're singing. We're starting to sing it.
Hey fellow FLTM's Midtown Gord here.
Just wanted to share my submission for crappy covers.
And I do have to say that when I listen for a cover song,
I do like to hear something that deviates a little bit from the original,
maybe makes it sound like the band that's performing it,
but not completely different than the original version and after listening to some songs that I thought were not that great the one that stood out to me was
Marilyn Manson doing his version of ACDC's Highway to Hell Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leaving me
Taking everything in my stride
Doubt and reason, don't bow Ain't nothing I would rather do Everything in my sight Telling me reason The rebound
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down
Friday time
My friends are gonna be there too
I'm on my way to hell
My way to hell I'll wait in hell
No stop sign, speed of the river
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me around
I get strange and pay my dues
I'm playing in and a blackened man
Hey mama, look at me
I'm on my way to the promised land
Mama, I'm waiting
I'm waiting
I'm waiting I'm waiting I'll wait here I'll wait here I'm out of here I waited in I'll wait in hell I'll wait in hell
I'll wait in hell
Hey Mike, YYZ Gord here.
For the theme of crappy covers, I was immediately drawn to the style of cover
where an artist does a take on a song they previously rocked
and slows it down into something entirely different.
Sometimes it works well, like when Johnny Cash reinvents Hurt
with a totally fresh new spin on an already great song.
More often than not, though, an otherwise talented artist
chooses to butcher a classic song by ripping any soul from it
Smells Like Teen Spirit is an amazing song and an anthem of my younger years
It is close to sacred, and what Tori Amos does to it is nothing short of crappy
Here's her castrated version of Smells Like Teen Spirit
Sorry
Lord, I'm all gone
Bring your friends It's fun to lose Sorry. A dirty word Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello
I'm worth said while I do best in foolish guilt
I feel blessed, a little girl
Has always been and always will be
Always been and always will be Until the end
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello
With the lights out
It's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us I feel stupid Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
Yes Hello, hello
Oh
With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now Entertain us, yes

Hi, my name is Milan. My pick for shitty cover song is Firestarter by Gene Simmons.
This was a simply very bad cover on a very great song.
This is the prodigy's best song and it's one of the best 90s songs in general.
What made him cover this even more interesting is what made radio stations play it at the time.
It was so easy to pick this version as my pick for shitty song cover. I haven't listened to it
since it came out on radio in 2004 and yet it was my automatic choice when Toronto Mike chose this as the jam topic.
I could barely listen to it, even a bit of it, even now.
In any case, everyone sticked with the original
and the best version by the Prodigy. I'm the trouble starter, pumpkin instigator
I'm the fear addicted, danger illustrated
I'm the fire starter, twisted fire starter Danger illustrated
I'm a fire starter Twisted fire starter
You're the fire starter
Twisted fire starter
I'm a fire starter
Twisted fire starter Firestarter, twisted firestarter
I'm the bitch you hated, filth infatuated
I'm the pain you tasted, fell intoxicated
I'm a fire starter, twisted fire starter Hey, hey, hey
You're the fire starter, twisted fire starter
Hey, hey, hey I'm gonna go I'm gonna go
I'm gonna go

Twisted fire starter
Hey, hey, hey You're a fire starter, twisted fire starter You're a fire starter, twisted fire starter
I'm a fire starter, twisted fire starter Hey, hey, hey It's Rick A, The Elevator Man.
And I was promised you wanted a crappy cover.
And I said I would deliver.
And it's Celine Dion's All By Myself.
Just to test this song.
The only good thing from it is the royalties that Eric Carman richly deserves
for making this great song that he originally sang.
But it's going to be painful to listen to this one.
When I was young, I never needed anyone
And making love was just fun I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Living alone
I think of all the friends I've known But when I dial the telephone
Nobody's home
All by myself
Don't wanna be all by myself anymore
Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure remains the cure All by myself
I don't wanna be
All by myself
Anymore
All by myself
All by myself
Anymore Thank you. When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone All by myself
Don't wanna be all by myself anymore
I don't want to live Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, I'm myself And more
Hey, it's JD here, and for this month's FOTM,
kick out the jams, crappy covers.
I want to first say crappy covers.
I love the alliteration.
Secondly, I love lists that don't go anywhere.
So there's that.
You know, the song that I chose was in my head.
And in my head, it was not that great.
And so I went and listened to it.
And then I realized that I sort of dig this song.
So I don't know that it's necessarily a crappy cover uh but rather just a cover and
maybe you'll enjoy it yourself uh I remember this coming out I don't know how we would have got
access to it because I believe it came out in 95 or so and there wasn't a YouTube and there was no
anything else so I don't know how I saw it but it's by a band called Mike Flowers Pops,
and it's a cover of Wonderwall, and it's pretty terrific,
even though it's supposed to be crappy.
So you make the rules, I break the rules.
Here you go.
This is Wonderwall by Mike Flowers Pops on FOTM.
Crappy covers.
That beat, the word on the screen, that the fire in your heart is out.
I'm sure you've heard it before, but you've never really had a doubt.
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you.
And all the roads that lead us there are winding.
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how
And baby
Are you gonna be the one that saves me?
And after all
You're my Wonderwall I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you
And all the roads that lead you there are winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how
and baby
are you gonna be the one that
saves me
and
after all
you're my wonderwall
Hey there, Mike, it's Mimico Joe.
I had a tough time with this one,
mostly because there are plenty of covers I'm not fond of,
but none that I truly hate.
And then I was reminded of Aerosmith's cover of Come Together,
and I realized that it's not that I don't like the song.
I think it's fine, but that's all it is. I think it's unnecessary. Aerosmith delivers a fine rock
inversion of Come Together, but they don't really add anything to it. I don't think artists need to
reinvent a song when they cover it, but I do think it's lazy to not do a damn thing to really make it
much different. And so I think this song is fine but the original is a masterpiece which kind of means fine isn't good
enough He got head down to his knees.
Got to be a joker.
He just do what he please.
He wear no shoeshine

Hi, Toronto Mike.
This is Cambrio.
And my request for crappy covers is a version of the song My Way,
originally written in English by Polanka,
but not the popularized Frank Sinatra version.
I'd like to request what some call
the more inferior Sid Vicious version.
Although Polanka did say it was a curious interpretation,
Leonard Cohen actually liked Sid's version better.
There was a scene in Sid and Nancy where Gary Oldman performs it.
And not to be outdone, it also appears in Goodfellas.
This goes out to the man who always does it his own way.
And that is the man
and legend,
Stu Stone.
Thanks so much, Mike. curtain You can't
I'm not a quill
I'll state
my case
of which I'm certain
I've lived
a life that's full
of each
and every
highway
and that Well each and every highway
Exerts much more than this
I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
I saw it through, but nothing's done
Yeah, I planned it out So I'm proud of what I've done this year
All plans, each are a cost
Then came the worst, all along the hours were
And more, much more than this
I didn't know Why
There were times
I'm sure you knew
When there was
Fuck
Fuck a little else to do
But threw it down
When there was that
I shook it down
I kicked it out, or faced the wall, and the wall, and didn't lie. I've loved and been a snide I've had my fill of shit and lifting
And now that tears have died
I find it all so amusing
To think I killed a cat
And my eyes say, not in the day
But I'm not, I'm not a mate
I didn't mean to fight for what is a threat? What has he got when he wears hats?
And he cannot say the things he truly feels
But only the words of what he feels
The record shows
I shot the blues
And did it my way Just before I wrap up this most excellent FOTM KOTJ episode,
and I really appreciate everybody who took the time to record themselves
and then send me that audio file.
That's a high barrier of entry. And thanks to
everybody who did it. I'm going to try and do an FOTM KOTJ episode every single month. So stay
tuned. If you're not in the not so secret FOTM group, you might want to follow me on Twitter to
find out what the topic is. I know that's a big ask, but that seems to be where I spill out the topic
and then we see what comes in.
I am, however, outraged at JD's selection.
The rules were very clear.
A crappy cover of a song you love.
And JD admits in his spiel
that he actually likes the Mike Flowers cover of Wonderwall,
which is a cool cover.
It's meant to be like in that James B., Brian Setzer orchestra swingers vibe.
But I figure if JD is going to break the rules so blatantly,
then I'm going to close this episode by also breaking the rules.
And I'm going to close this episode by also breaking the rules.
Way back in 1978, when I was watching Buffy St. Marie on Sesame Street,
Hot Chocolate had a big hit with Everyone's a Winner.
It ended up peaking at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
That made it the band's second highest charting single after You Sexy Thing.
On this side of the pond, anyway.
Well, I never loved Everyone's a Winner.
It's a fine song. I just don't love it. Okay? But I thought
this might be a great excuse
to reiterate something uttered
in the recent Art Bergman episode
and then repeated in the
recent Lowest of the Low episode
and I say this because
I like recurring
patterns on Toronto Mic'd.
Never met anybody in this band.
I would love to talk to somebody in this band.
But people I know and trust have said these words
and now it's becoming a catchphrase.
So I'm going to say it loud and proud right now
as I kick out a crappy cover of a song I never really loved.
This is Bootsauce.
Everyone's a winner.
Fuck Bootsauce. I believe that we are Now baby, I just guess The day that you got to tonight
Cause baby, I believe
That you're a star
Everyone's a winner, baby
That's the truth
I'm making love to you
With six three
Everyone's a winner, baby
There's no lie
We'll never be satisfied
Let's do it again
Let's do it again We'll see you next time. Baby, it's amazing just how wonderful it is The things we like to do are just the same
Everyone's a winner, baby, that's the truth
Making love to you is such a thrill
Everyone's a winner, baby, there's no lie
You'll never feel satisfied No life Will never be Satisfied
Let's do it again
Let's do it again
Yeah
Let's do it again
We're wild, we're wild
We're wild, we're wild
Wild, wild, baby, baby, baby Everyone's a winner, baby, they ask for trouble
We can't let you with such fear
Everyone's a winner, baby, there's no lie
You'll never feel satisfied
Everyone's a winner, baby
Everyone's a winner, baby
Let's do it again, yeah, again
Everyone's a winner, baby
Let's do it, let's do it again
Every once in a while, baby
Let's do it, let's do it again
Every once in a while
Every once in a while Every once in a while Everywhere, everywhere Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere
Everywhere, everywhere Everywhere, everywhere And I can never leave me
Here once I'm with a baby
And I can never leave me And that brings us to the end of our 1,375th show.
You can follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky.
I'm at Toronto Mike. Much love to those who
made this all possible. That's Great Lakes Brewery, Palma Pasta, Raymond James Canada,
Moneris, Recycle My Electronics, and Ridley Funeral Home. See you tomorrow when Steve
Paken and Mary Hines drop by. Cause my UI check has just come in
Ah, where you been?
Because everything is kind of rosy and gray
Yeah, the wind is cold but the snow wants me today
And your smile is fine and it's just like mine And it won't go away
Cause everything is rosy and green
Well you've been under my skin for more than eight years
