Today, returning to Toronto Mic'd but making her in-person debut is Cynthia Dale.
Do you know that my lucky number is 1,395? That's not true.
Okay, I don't believe you, Cynthia Dale. Cynthia Dale, I went in, I dug deep into my closet and I dug out something I haven't
worn in maybe decades.
I'm surprised it still fits, but I'm wearing my Michael Power hoodie.
I have one just like it.
I know.
And I was kind of, I didn't, like, we didn't arrange this, obviously, but I was like, oh,
will Cynthia be wearing her Power jacket or something at the door?
I should have worn my power jacket. Sorry.
Come on, I can't be doing all the creative thinking around here.
But no, it's nice to meet you. I felt like, oh, there's my friend Cynthia, but we've technically never met.
No, not in person. No.
Only in our dreams. Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Fun fact.
Did you know Bonnie Crombie,
the current leader of the Provincial Liberal Party,
was in the same grade as you at Michael Power St. Joseph's High School?
She grew up like two minutes from my house.
We grew up right around the street together.
So you could, like, she'll take your call
if you have any issues in Stratford.
If she's in power, you can make a call and take care of it.
When she becomes premier, yeah.
Is that inevitable?
Oh, please.
It's a prayer.
There, I said it.
Are you allowed,
because you're married to Peter Mansbridge,
are you allowed to have these independent political thoughts?
Is that permitted?
He doesn't do the news anymore.
That's true.
That's true.
All right.
Lots to cover,
but I thought we'd get to the jams right away.
Okay.
Just going to boost you a little bit.
Okay.
I can talk louder.
Sorry.
Okay.
Yeah.
You can move that thing too, if it's awkward. Okay. So we're going to get to the jams, and then between jams, okay just gonna boost you a little bit because i can talk louder sorry okay yeah i think you can
move that thing too if it's like awkward okay so we're gonna get to the jams and then between jams
we'll catch up and get to know each other better because of course i have some uh some old nuggets
i need to kick out
the jams?
Yes, I am.
Give me a ticket for an airplane
I ain't got time to take no fasting
Oh, the lonely days are gone
I'm coming home
Well, my baby, she wrote me a letter I don't care how much I've got to spend
I won't find my way back home again
Oh, the lonely days are gone
I'm coming home
Yeah, my baby, she wrote me a letter I'm coming home. Cynthia Dale kicking out the Joe Cocker right out of the hopper here.
Talk to me.
Why this song?
It's the first song that came to my mind when you asked me about this, finding a song.
It's the first song I ever remember thinking, I want to go buy that 45.
I was like maybe 10, right?
Like when it came out.
Okay.
So you grew up in Etobicoke.
Yeah.
Like where was your local record store?
Like where would that be?
Cloverdale Mall.
It would have been Cloverdale Mall.
Want to hear a wild mind blow?
I think this is a mind blow.
Last week, I had a guest in here to fact check, Randy Backman from BTO.
The guest who, and this gentleman's day job is he manages the Sunrise Records in Cloverdale Mall.
Small world. But isn't that wild? You're talking about a record store. I know. Day job is he manages the Sunrise Records in Cloverdale Mall.
Small world.
But isn't that wild?
You're talking about a record store.
I know.
I don't know what your, what was your record store?
It wasn't Sunrise, right?
No, I don't know what it would have been back then, right?
I mean, you know, like the big one to go to, to be allowed to go down to was Downtown to Sam's, right?
Sam the Record Man.
That was it.
Do you remember that ritual?
Because I was like, my weekend thing was like, me and my right? Sam the Record Man. That was it. Do you remember that ritual? Because that was like my weekend thing
was like me and my buddies
would get on the subway.
We'd head all the way, you know,
to Young Bloor,
then head south or whatever,
get off at Dundas
and then go to Sam the Record Man.
Yeah, it was a big deal.
I mean, I can literally remember
walking in that huge, huge store.
Sam the Record Man.
There's still one left, I understand,
at a mall in,
what's it called,
Quinty?
Is that what we
call that neck of
the woods?
Really?
Yeah, I believe
there's still one
Sam the record
man.
Oh, I didn't
know that.
Like a rogue
Sam still in the
wild there.
Okay, so I
don't know what I
expected.
I grew up with
a parody song
called Vanna
Pick Me a
Letter.
I had the
45 single of
Vanna pick me a letter, Vanna
pick me a letter, no one does it any better.
I dream about you.
I don't even know the artist.
No, Joe. Gotta be Joe.
Something about the timbre of that voice,
man. Where would you
have heard this song, Cynthia Day?
I remember standing, as we
used to do back then,
standing up in the back of my mother's car,
leaning over the seat to reach for the radio,
to turn the radio up.
Because who knew of a seatbelt back then, right?
And is this chum, 1050 chum?
Yep, that's what it would have been.
Yep, that's what it would have been.
Do you have any memory of like at this age,
this young Cynthia young Cynthia,
not a Dale yet.
This is a real last name.
I was a Dale.
You were a Dale already.
I was a Dale,
but also a Charloini.
Okay.
I'm still a Charloini.
I know.
I saw your one woman play
and I feel like
I could write your story
right now.
Okay.
So I know,
I know more about you
than you do.
Yeah.
But okay.
Did you,
do you remember
any of the personalities
on 1050 Chum
that you would hear
as a kid?
No.
Oh, God.
I'd have to really
think about that.
How much time do we have?
No, I don't.
I don't actually.
Okay, if any,
during this chat,
like you might have
memories that get
triggered by the music.
Music triggers memories.
Okay.
So I love,
we're starting with
Joe Cocker.
We're rolling right
into song two.
We're going to get you loosened up,
and then we're going to hit a few Cynthia Dale hot spots
because it is your second appearance,
but our first in-person episode.
So we're going to learn more about Cynthia Dale.
Okay, jam number two.
Hey, what's happening?
Brother, what's up?
This is a new recording, man.
Yeah, brother, like, stop right on.
What's up?
Hey, man, what's your name?
It's my name, bro. Hey, what's up? What's up? What's up, man? Woo! I can dig it. Brother, brother, brother There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some loving here today
Yeah
Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can help hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some love and get here today
Picket lines
And picket signs
Don't punish me
With brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
You can sing along to your jams if you want, Cynthia.
I know you're a singer, okay?
We've established this in your first episode.
Marvin Gaye.
Marvin Gaye.
But this tune, this sort of laid the groundwork,
set the standard for a whole type of music
that influenced my growing up.
I dig it, man.
This is an iconic song.
Great song.
Truly.
Because an artist gone far too soon.
Yep.
I just glanced.
I wanted to tell people, like, if they're looking for the A to Z of Cynthia Dale's Life and Times,
that's episode 1061.
That's your other favorite number, right?
1061.
Yes, it is.
And I'm looking at her photo because we did it on Zoom.
You were at a castle.
You were at one of your castles.
No.
How many castles do you own?
We don't own a castle.
When I see you on Instagram in Scotland, you're not living in a castle.
No, it was a
pig barn actually,
a sheep barn
that we bought
and turned it
into a house.
Okay, I just assumed
everyone in Scotland
had a castle
but I do watch
The Crown
so I see that
the Queen has these
had, she passed away.
Shout out to Ridley Funeral
but I'm looking at you,
you are wearing
your power jacket
in this photo.
Yeah, I did,
that's right,
for you that day, I did.
You're a sweetheart.
Yeah.
Okay, did you have a good time at Michael Power?
I had the best five years of my life.
I had a fantastic time.
I loved every minute of it.
I was a happy teenager.
I loved it.
Okay, we're going to touch on some of that here.
I will read the description I wrote at the time, episode 1061.
Mike chats with Cynthia Dale about her acting career
with a particular focus on My Bloody Valentine.
I could do 90 minutes on that.
Heavenly Bodies.
I might play a clip in a moment from Heavenly Bodies.
And Street Legal, her performances at the Stratford Festival,
her upcoming one-woman woman show which I attended
and enjoyed thoroughly are you going to do any
more one women shows I don't think so
that was a one and done you did
the eight is that of Cynthia Dale okay
and what they have in common and it turns out the only thing
we have in common is that we're
both graduates of Michael Power St.
Joseph's High School we live to tell the tale of
the lives of Sister Imelda.
You, me,
I don't remember Sister Imelda.
You have a couple years on me, not too many.
Maybe Imelda disappeared by the time
I got there. Okay, seriously, how old are you?
49. Oh God, I have many
years on you, darling.
I can Google your age.
I'm 63. Yes, and you look fantastic. And you sound
fantastic. And
you were done with power before I got there. But
still, we went about it. But I got the brick.
I told you about the brick. Yeah, you took
that's the, because now it's
condos now. Yeah, and one day when I was
driving by on Dundas
Street and they were tearing it down.
I thought, my God.
You should have brought the brick do i have
to produce this whole episode here you should have brought the jacket why am i sweating in this maybe
maybe i'll maybe you'll invite me back sometime i know what i'll wear and what i'll bring bring
the brick i just i'll take a selfie with the brick here i i you know made a swerve into the
parking lot and and climbed over the fence.
Actually, I did it from the Bloor Street, from the Islington Streets.
No, it was Bloor Street.
That's right across from the cop shop.
Police station, yeah.
Yeah.
And I climbed the fence, not caring if a cop saw me.
Well, you're Cynthia Dale.
Like, what are they going to do?
Like, it's like, I'm Cynthia fucking Dale.
No, no, really.
No, no.
Cynthia Turluini.
Like, you know, like, really.
I don't see a fucking day off. No, no, really.
No, no.
Sit in Terluini.
Like, really.
And I climbed the fence and took three bricks for me and my two friends that lived to tell the tale.
Okay, shout out these friends.
Janet Mulligan, who lives out on the West Coast now.
And Leslie Jones, who was Leslie Jessen at the time.
My person.
She is my person.
I wouldn't get through life without my person, Leslie.
I have a question.
So your husband grew up in Manitoba? Is that right?
No.
Where did he grow up?
He was born in England and he grew up in England and Malaysia and then moved to Ottawa.
I need to get him in the basement and find out. Okay, okay.
So my wife grew up in Alberta and every time I tell her about my five years in high school,
she kind of snickers at me like, five years? Like they all did four years.
No, we did five. No, we did five.
Oh, we did five.
In the olden days.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
They don't do that anymore.
But absolutely.
Took the stagecoach.
You and I did five because we had OECs.
And yeah, I enjoyed that like five years.
I loved it.
I loved it.
I had a great time.
You know, I mean, like I was a cheerleader.
I was, you know, a hockey stat. You could have wore that outfit for me.
No, I don't have that outfit anymore.
All right, so I'm going to do this.
I'm going to intersperse
like some of my more personal
Cynthia stuff
throughout your jam.
So we're down two jams,
two great jams.
This next one is like...
Out of left field for you?
Well, not out of left field
because it's actually been kicked out
before by people.
It seems to be the jam,
but it is like more highly cultured than I'm typically used to.
It's impressive.
It's a very good song.
But here, let's all listen to just a little taste of Heavenly Bodies.
What?
Just a little bit.
I'm tired, darling.
Had to be this freaking stage.
Don't you think you've had enough?
Well, there's a reason.
You'll remember in a minute.
Just a little more.
Okay, Mom?
Okay.
Now let's fetch the guns and things, said Huck.
No, Huck, leave them there.
They're just the tricks that we have to go to robbing.
We'll keep them there all the time and we'll hold our o-r-r.
Mom?
Mm-S? What? What are you Oh. Now, how do you say that word?
Orgies.
Orgies.
Just orgies.
Now, hurry up and finish that page, okay?
And we'll hold our orgies.
Mom, what's an orgies?
Do you remember what I told you about a man and woman being in love and making babies?
Yes.
Well, an orgy is people doing that without the love that makes it so nice.
How come Tom Sawyer's going to have an orgy?
I think he's talking about something the pirates are going to do.
Do you have an orgy, Mom?
No.
In fact, your mom hasn't had a lot of anything lately.
Okay, Cynthia, you know why I play that clip.
I'm not trying to embarrass you.
Because he must pay you.
He must pay you to play that clip.
He isn't that.
Okay, so for those who don't know,
the child's voice we hear with Cynthia,
who's playing your son,
is an FOTM Hall of Famer. If you play your cards right, Cynthia Dale,
one day you might be an FOTM Hall of Famer.
This is your goal in life, okay?
But that's Stu Stone.
Like, okay, so we're finally in person.
The Stu Stone.
Okay, have you ever seen this?
I know, I know.
You know all about Stu Stone.
Yes, I do.
You're the one who's editing his Wikipedia page.
So this is blowing up, Jamie Kennedy and Stu Stone.
That's Stu Stone asking Cynthia Dale
what's an orgies? I think that's incredible
that how we're
all connected in this wonderful way.
It's a small world.
You should write a song about that. Okay.
What do you... Put it in my jam.
What can you tell me about,
just briefly, about
Lawrence Dane. This is a Lawrence Dane
direction. Larry Dane.
Larry, sorry. His friends call Dane. Larry, sorry.
His friends call him Larry.
Larry, who's no longer with us.
Larry was a great guy.
I mean, you know, that movie,
we shot that movie in 18 days.
I think I told you this before.
The only way you got a second take
was if the camera screwed up.
Like there was, you had to just,
it was fast and dirty, literally fast and dirty.
But, you know, I'd never done a lead in a feature film before.
And, you know, it was a good break.
It was good to do.
I was incredibly earnest.
I don't watch it.
Well, the sense I got from you is you're not particularly proud of this project.
Oh, no.
Oh, you are proud.
Well, I mean, you know.
You know, I've been wrong with my senses before, Cynthia.
Okay, so tell me.
With a small P.
But, like, I'm incredibly earnest in that film
but you know i was young i was a young earnest performer i feel like it's being rediscovered
and uh better appreciated maybe today than it was back then like i feel like people are
coming around on heavenly bodies and kind of uh enjoying it for what it was
for what it was yeah okay but there was no sequel there was no heavenly bodies and kind of enjoying it for what it was. For what it was, yeah.
Okay, but there was no sequel.
There was no Heavenly Bodies 2.
No.
Were you open to a sequel if they had approached you?
Would you have made a sequel?
No, there was no clamoring for that ever to happen.
The crowds were not cheering and chanting, believe me.
I don't know about that, but it depends.
Yeah, Stu Stone, for what it's worth, very proud of that film.
Well, you know, even though I don't think he got to see it at the time.
I've got to ask Stu how old he was when he was able to watch Heavenly Bodies.
Maybe I'll find out.
But great job by Stu Stone and a wonderful job by Michael Power graduate Cynthia Dale.
There you go.
You want to culture this thing up a little bit with some
real music, Cynthia?
Yeah, this one's for my dad.
Okay, and there's a bit of a build up here
so you're welcome to talk it up a little bit. It's up to you.
Oh, it's for my dad. It'll be
very hard to not cry
listening to this.
But
my incredibly handsome Italian father loved this song.
There was a great restaurant back growing up on the Queensway called Latina.
Latina's that we used to go to.
He used to sing this song. Ordi le stelle che tremano d'amore e di speranza.
SINGING IN ITALIAN I will let the silence that makes you mine go. CHOIR SINGS Estelle all'alba vincerà, vincerà, vincerà! I'm a stranger Wow, Cynthia, you should have closed with this. Where do we go from here?
How did it feel listening to that in the headphones right there?
Oh, God, if that doesn't stir your heart and make you want to weep and sob for love and joy,
then I don't know what kind of human being you are.
So tell me a little more about your relationship with your father.
Did he sound like Luciano Pavarotti?
No, no, no, no, not at all.
But he just, he was a fantastically handsome,
wonderful Italian man.
And he loved listening to him.
And he loved introducing us to this
and kind of music.
And both my parents, you know,
influenced us so much with music but yeah
I never heard my father call me Cynthia my father only ever called me peanut my
whole life never heard him call me Cynthia Wow yeah beautiful isn't there
something beautiful about the fact that you know you could get lost and that's
like you're sitting here in some guy's basement and you were lost
in that song. I was watching you as I was
listening and you were lost in the song.
And I know you could hear your father
singing that thing in your mind.
It's kind of a beautiful thing.
Yeah, absolutely. Immediately I'm
right there with him. And we're only three
jams deep. Oh dear. This is quite
the experience for Cynthia Dale. And by the way, thanks for being
here. You know, we had to reschedule
a little bit. Thanks for asking. I know.
I screwed up scheduling. I'm sorry.
No, but it's a busy time of year, so
I understand. At least you didn't
ghost me. I got ghosted.
He's sorry and he's going to make it up to
me, but Rick Emmett from Triumph
was, he wrote
a book and we were going to do a chat
and then he didn't show for the chat.
And then I was like,
what the heck?
Have you heard from him?
Yep.
He blanked and he's very sorry
and we're going to do it on Thursday.
But still,
I think it's the first time
in 1,396 episodes
I was ghosted like completely.
1,395 is my good luck number.
I saved this number for you, Cynthia.
It's all coming together here.
Yeah.
All right.
So I'll play another jam,
and then we'll get back to the life and times of Cynthia Dale.
Although really, playing this music with you
really is the life and times of Cynthia Dale.
It is.
It is.
Yeah.
It's your theme song.
Hey, where did we go?
Days when the rains came.
Down in the hollow.
Playing a new game.
Laughing and running hey hey
skipping and jumping
in the misty morning fog
with all our hearts
thumping
and you
a brown eyed girl
you my
brown eyed girl You, my bright-eyed girl
And whatever happened
The Tuesday that's so slow
Gone down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight
Laughing
Hiding high At a rainbow's wall, slipping and sliding, all along the waterfall with you, my brown-eyed girl.
And you, my brown-eyed girl Do you remember when
We used to sing
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Just like that.
Brown-eyed girl, Van Morrison.
Talk to me, Cynthia.
Okay, you gotta know, a big thing about me
that probably no one has even ever put in Wikipedia.
I am a big kitchen dance party gal.
I'm going to put that in Wikipedia right now.
So it's you who put that stuff in.
That's an East Coast thing, right?
I don't know what it is.
I feel like this is from the Maritimes, the kitchen parties.
I'm a kitchen dance party gal.
Okay.
Solo or with friends.
But it's a big thing. You know, and one of my dearest friends
that I've done it with for years is a gal,
a woman named Barb Fulton,
who was part of the Stratford Company for years.
She lives in Stratford also.
And during COVID, when we couldn't do
our kitchen dance parties,
when we couldn't see each other,
we would meet in parking lots
and turn the tunes up as loud as possible
and go and dance in a field.
Because it was just, it's good for the soul.
So that's what this song reminds me of.
It's got nothing to do with the fact you're a brown-eyed girl.
I am?
Are you?
Yes.
Yes, you are.
All right.
I think you're a brown-eyed girl because I've seen your eyes and they're brown.
But then I was like, oh, I've got a second guess. All right. I think you're a brown-eyed girl because I've seen your eyes and they're brown. But then I was like, oh, I got a second guess.
All right.
No, I think objectively,
objectively,
this is a great song
and I'm glad you're kicking out
some Van Morrison.
Did you ever see that movie,
Belfast?
Oh, yes.
His jams are all over that thing.
And I do like,
you know,
a lot of the,
them, I guess,
his band was them
and they had like Gloria
and all that stuff
and early, tragically hip, they kind of the, them, I guess his band was them and they had like Gloria and all that stuff and early Tragically Hip,
they kind of would
always cover them
like in the,
the very,
very early days
of the Tragically Hip
and always dug that sound.
So,
he's gone a little nuts lately,
but you know,
who didn't during
the COVID-19 pandemic?
Totally,
he has.
I was,
I was going to skip that bit,
but.
Oh,
no,
no,
we,
we don't,
don't shy away from anything.
We don't print the legend on this show.
And I can say this.
I personally am able to separate the artist from the art.
What say you, Cynthia?
Like, can you appreciate a song by somebody if it is revealed?
And I'm not saying this about Van Morrison,
but if you do love a song and then you find out
maybe the artist was not a good dude,
are you able to still enjoy that song, Cynthia? you know it depends on the artist i think it's got to depend on how what the song
meant to me whether i'm really interested in letting it sort of wash over me still or dance
to it in my kitchen dance parties right or maybe you can't enjoy it because you think too much about
who's singing and maybe what they did or something like that.
That goes with actors too.
You know, people like performers, people like that.
You go, do I really need to look at their work anymore or care about their work?
Like that film that was, they filmed that movie and then they like extracted Kevin Spacey from it.
This was years ago.
But Christopher Plummer.
Took over the part.
Took over the part.
And then they released it.
But that was like an example of like,
yeah, people won't want to,
at this point in the history of the world,
maybe they don't want to sit down for two hours
and look at Kevin Spacey.
Let's put in somebody that everybody likes,
a great Torontonian,
Christopher Plummer.
Yes.
Did you ever work with Christopher Plummer?
I did work with Christopher Plummer.
I did.
He played my uncle in a movie I did
called The Boy in Blue.
Yes, he was a friend.
Always thought he'd be a good Toronto Mike to guest.
I missed it, though.
Yeah.
I missed it.
Shout out to Ridley Fino at home.
Okay.
Let's get to this song.
Can I dedicate it to another FOTM?
Is that allowed?
Can I dedicate this song to Steve Paikin?
Oh, sure.
All right.
This is for Steve listening at home.
Let's kick it.
Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me.
Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore.
You are all I long for, all I worship and adore. In other words, please be true.
In other words, I love you.
Ladies and gentlemen, the chairman of the board, Frank Sinatra.
Yeah, that lick right there, that blast of horns.
I mean, it's iconic.
It's the arrangement, the mix of the voice and the tone and the melding,
the alchemy that happens in that song is fantastic.
It's a big word, alchemy.
Did you learn that at Michael Peller High School?
I did.
Sister Imelda taught it to me.
Did you get good grades?
No.
God, no.
And because you were already a rising superstar,
was there any plans to go to university or anything like that?
Are you just going to go find your fame and fortune?
No, I was working before already.
Like I was working as an actress and, you know, like I was a musical theater kid.
So I was singing, dancing and acting.
And there wasn't a place for higher education after high school that taught it at the level
that you could take it individually.
You could take singing at the
conservatory which i did and i did acting classes with someone else and i did dance classes so i did
it differently frank just took us home there now okay so what did frank sinatra mean to you like
they're i mean he's so iconic but i personally i didn't have any like exposure to frank sinatra
except oh i had lots of it.
Lots of it.
Lots of it.
In our home basement.
Is that because you were Italian?
Was this mandatory?
Frank Sinatra?
Francis Albert Sinatra?
No, but all of that music was mandatory.
Was your mother of Italian descent?
No, she was British.
Veal was her last name.
She was a manja cake.
Okay.
Okay.
I've got to find out everything about you.
Okay.
Sorry, back to the chairman. No, no, no, I mean, didn't everybody have
one of those turntables in the basement in the
60s that, you know, was this huge
piece of furniture with these big speakers
in it and brown wood and you lifted
up the centerpiece and that's where the turntable
was and you could slide open the doors
underneath that and that's where all the records were
capped and that's what Frank was.
That's where, you know, we listened to a lot of frank have you passed on uh you know your love of certain artists
to your son yes absolutely so like if i had your son here right now and i said uh what song do you
most identify with your mom like what song do you think he would pick? That's a tough one.
That's a tough one.
But none of these songs would be a surprise for him.
Okay.
And on that note, so his name's Will, right?
Will Will.
Will Will.
That's funny.
Will Will.
Will Will listened to this jam kicking by his mom.
Like I personally, if I heard anyone in the universe kicked out the jams of my mom, I'd have to listen to that.
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
Because, yeah, no.
And he knows all of this music.
And does he know about the What's in Orgies?
He's familiar.
He's never seen Heavenly Bodies.
I wouldn't put him through that.
He's avoided that search on YouTube.
All right.
We've got more jams to get to, but I do want to ask you about a role.
You're not kicking out this jam, I noticed.
I'm just not.
Now, you're only 63, Cynthia.
You have many years of wonderful projects ahead of you.
But I would think, like like if you got run over
by a truck tomorrow,
shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
The first line is going to be,
the first line is going to be,
I hope it never happens to me,
is that she's best known
as a lawyer Olivia Novak
in Street Legal.
Like I think that's
number one right now.
Yeah, it depends who you talk to.
Some people would say
she's best known as Will's mom.
Right. Okay.
But for some of us,
you're Olivia Novak.
Yeah, I guess.
Okay, so the original
run of Street Legal, 1987
to 1994.
Looking back, I just need to know, I'm going to look you in your
brown eyes, girl.
You proud of being
Olivia Novak on Street Legal?
I had the best job in Canada for those
seven years. The best. Okay. How come only seven years? Like we have a hit on our hand. Let's go.
Let's go. I mean, Murdoch Mysteries, which I'm going to ask you about in a minute. It's going
to go 30 years because somebody realized, hey, people in Canada are watching. Why would we stop?
There was a different time. There was a group of people that decided to
why would we stop?
There was a different time.
There was a group of people that decided to
can it
and do something else.
Who are those people?
I think I've
buried their names
in the backyard.
You can't say a bad word.
You know,
you're not here
to trash anybody.
I don't want to trash them.
You're here for a good time.
Okay.
Now we did,
when you were on,
I sensed it was
a sensitive subject
but they did reboot it
and it didn't get
a fair shot in your opinion. It didn't get a fair did reboot it, and it didn't get a fair shot, in your
opinion. It didn't get a fair shot. No.
It absolutely didn't get a fair shot.
There was good things and bad things about it, but
it didn't get a fair shot, and
I don't know, the head person
at CBC decided to
give it a pass, and they made a mistake.
Peter doesn't work there anymore. You can name this person now.
I know you were careful. I get a sense, like, you know,
while he was at the National
you would be
sensitive.
Can't be bothered.
Cannot be bothered.
And you know what?
You know what?
Here's the thing.
If that gig had
happened I wouldn't
have my house in
Scotland.
I wouldn't have my
life in Scotland.
You wouldn't have
the castle.
I wouldn't have my
Bria is the name of
my house in Scotland.
How many again you
know these are
personal questions but
sometimes you're in
Toronto sometimes you're in Stratford sometimes you're in Scotland. How many, again, you know, these are personal questions, but sometimes you're in Toronto, sometimes you're in Stratford, sometimes you're in Scotland. How many different, like how
many different homes do you own? No, no, no. I live in Scotland and I live in Stratford. I stay
in Toronto sometimes when we have to stay in Toronto. What's your Scotland season? Like,
is it just during the summer? Like when would we the... No, I was there this time last year, actually.
It gets dark really early at this time of year,
but it's incredibly beautiful at this time of year.
Can you sell me on Scotland?
Like, I do have a grandmother, I will say.
Oh, my God.
My grandmother, Clara, who came from Scotland.
Don't even... No, Scotland is God's country.
Okay.
The beaches, the highlands.
It's the Northern Lights, the double rainbow.
You're selling me on this.
It is.
I'm moving to Scotland.
It is the most gorgeous, magnificent, wonderful country.
And when did you first experience Scotland?
About seven, eight, seven years ago was the first time I was ever there. Yeah. The boys
had been going, Pete's been going for 20 years, 25 years, and Will's been going for years golfing
too. I don't golf. Why would I ruin a beautiful walk? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
No, I go and, you know, people act like, go have a nice time on your vacation in Scotland. I don't
vacation in Scotland. I live in Scotland. I live in Scotland.
I do my life in Scotland.
So, okay.
I don't know.
Okay.
What's the big city you're closest to?
Inverness.
I'm up in the Highlands.
I'm really far north.
I'm in the north.
I've been to Inverness, Nova Scotia.
That's different.
That was named after Inverness in Scotland.
Of course.
Of course.
You sold me on Scotland, Cynthia.
You should do ads for the tourism. I would love to do ads for Scotland. Do you want me to Scotland Cynthia you should do ads for the tourism
I would love to do ads
you want me to broker that deal
can you hook me up
if I'm going to do a Scotland campaign
you're the face of my campaign
you just look so fresh
and happy
in my Scottish scarf
in my little piece of sea glass
from a beach in Scotland
you didn't bring any power paraphernal, but you got the Scotland stuff going.
Now I feel silly.
Like if you heard you were going to a Halloween party, right?
And you think it's a dress up party.
So you dress up and you get there, but no one else is dressed up.
That's how I feel.
Like I'm at the door.
I just thought you wore this all the time.
I haven't touched it.
I haven't touched.
I think I've worn it for one uh one photo i did
with my buddy shem hello to shem who is also class of 93 michael power and i haven't worn it other
than that one day i would say since 1993 i know isn't it amazing when you still have it it's like
i still have it i have my kilt pin i don't have the kilt but i have my kilt pin and i actually
wear it now on my skirts in Scotland.
Wow.
Okay.
I'm loving this so much, and we're going to get to the theater here, I see.
So we're going to kick out a jam. The most beautiful sound I ever heard.
heard Maria
Maria
Maria
All the beautiful sounds
of the world in a single
word
Maria
Maria
Maria
Maria
Maria Maria I've just met a girl Maria, Maria, Maria
Maria, I've just met a girl named Maria
And suddenly that name will never be the same to me
Maria, I've just kissed a girl named Maria And suddenly I've found
How wonderful a sound can be
Maria
Say it loud and there's music playing
Say it soft and it's almost like praying
Maria It's soft and it's almost like praying.
Maria, I'll never stop saying Maria. Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria.
Say it loud and there's music playing.
Say it soft and it's almost like praying.
Maria, I'll never stop saying.
Maria.
Cynthia.
I'm going to adapt this.
Okay, West Side Story.
Maria.
Maria is my second name.
And...
Listen to that.
Did I pull the right version?
I was actually sweating bullets.
I don't want to disappoint Cynthia. She says, original Broadway. I think I got it Did I pull the right version? I was actually sweating bullets. I don't want to disappoint Cynthia.
She says original Broadway.
I think I got it.
Is that the right version?
All of it's right.
All of it's fantastic.
You're being very kind.
I did screw that up, didn't I?
It's okay.
But what was it supposed to be?
Probably the movie version.
I think that's, it says original Broadway.
Like it says that in the, when I went to YouTube, it said West Side Story.
It's okay.
It's all fantastic.
It doesn't get any better.
This is important, Cynthia. No, it's fantastic.
You can't screw that up. Anybody singing that song.
Tell me what West Side Story means to you.
Growing up, I probably watched every Busby Berkeley,
every Ziegfeld, every movie musical,
Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney,
every musical that we could watch on TV, we watched,
or we went and saw, my mother took us to, or anything.
And I probably could have excelled at that
if we had a class in that at Michael Power St. Joe's
instead of what I had to study, or didn't study,
but had to try and learn.
But I loved musical theater. This musical, when it came out, was so seminal to me and so changing that all of this music and the jets and the, like, it just meant so much, this
music. And so maybe any song from that show could have done it,
I could have picked, but this one just soars.
What's your middle name?
It speaks to you, it calls you.
Yeah, it does.
Okay, and so you're young Cynthia,
what's the real last name again?
Cherluini.
Cherluini?
C-I-U-R-L-U-I-N-I.
Cherluini.
That's it.
Beautiful.
So young Cynthia, I almost called you Peanut, but only you're done.
I was able to call you Peanut.
Okay, Cynthia Cherluini.
I am working on it.
But when you hear, I don't know, the original Broadway soundtrack for West Side Story,
are you like, I'm going to be on stage?
Like, that's my calling.
I'm going to be on stage doing that.
I knew I was going to be on.
I knew I wanted to be on stage.
And I was lucky enough as a kid, I worked a lot.
But it's like.
But that's Wayne and Schuster putting you to work, right?
Yeah, it was.
And Tommy Hunter and lots of and lots of stage stuff as well.
But you have to sort of when you stick with it through your high school years
and then you're lucky enough to work as an adult,
that's different.
And this was a dream role for me to play,
Maria in West Side Story.
And I almost did it at the Stratford Festival,
but I decided to not do it that season.
Why?
Because I wanted to have a baby instead.
You chose poorly. No, I didn't. No, I didn't. not do it that season. Why? Because I wanted to have a baby instead. And so.
You chose poorly.
Nope, I didn't.
Nope, I didn't.
So I can still sing the music if I have to,
but I've got the best part. Why not both?
Why not have a baby and play?
Because I was at an age where I needed to,
it was either shit or get off the pot.
And am I allowed to say it?
Yeah, you can swear.
This is not, do you think you're on CBC radio here?
No, no, no, no. Anyway, so I knew I had to do it. Yeah, you can swear. This is not, do you think you're on CBC radio here? No, no, no, no.
Anyway, so I knew I had to do it.
You know, your clock goes off.
It's like that something happens, right?
Us guys can laugh at that, but I know what it's like.
And so, and they were doing the show that season and that's okay.
They did it and it was a beautiful production.
I saw it, but I went and did a better production.
So, and I can't, we did talk about this last time, right?
Like your son works
with drake do i have any no he doesn't work with drake did i butcher that completely yeah yeah
he'll kill but but fotm scott moore uh is involved with this yeah it's a it's uninterrupted canada
yeah lebron james was started uninterrupted right in the states that's cool oh it's fantastic get
him on toronto mike what am i wasting my time with cynthia freaking now here okay let's get will on toronto mike okay all right loving
this very much but now i'm worried i screwed up this version too so i'm gonna play it because
you're very sweet uh i think i did all right but it's tough like you kind of like i gotta go find
i don't remember what my next one is all right well you're gonna be a surprise okay everyone else
oh yeah it's beautiful.
Phew.
And in fact, when I told Willie I was doing this,
and I had to pick 10 songs,
his first thing said was,
well, you've got a Moon River in there, aren't you?
Because he knows his mom.
But it's got to be a specific version
from Breakfast at Tiffany's, am I right?
Well, yeah, that's when it just sort of...
One of the greatest movies in the world.
Come on, listen to that.
This is a spiritual experience for me, Cynthia, listening to to your jam i have a big lump in my
throat sitting over here listening to some of these songs well cry will you it's great content
for a podcast cry damn it I'm crossing you in style someday.
Oh, dream-maker, you heart-breaker, Wherever you're going, I'm going your way.
Two drifters often see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
To see We're after
The same
Rainbow's end
Waving round the bend
My humble buried friend
Moon river
And me
It's a beautiful version.
You picked a gorgeous one.
Well, you picked it, Cynthia.
I just executed.
Now, I always think about
George Costanza had that book.
He had to read the book, Breakfast at Tiffany's,
but then he rented the movie, but he couldn't get the movie.
He had to go to someone's house and watch it.
Do you remember any of this?
No.
I'm on my own, but that's what I think of when I think of Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Keep going, keep going.
I have never seen Breakfast at Tiffany's, so can you tell me what I'm missing?
Oh, Audrey Hepburn and George Pappard. It's fantastic.
It's beautiful. It's romantic.
It's wonderful. It's
cry me a river, cry me a moon river.
It's beautiful. Okay.
Loving this so much. Yeah, it's classic. It's from
that era of movies,
right? In the 60s. It's fantastic.
I pulled a fun little clip. I'm going to play a bit
of it and then we're going to talk about it. You ready, Cynthia
Dale? Okay, go.
Doing some research on a film.
She's playing a news director, and she has come here to watch me at work.
That's part of her research. And she specifically has asked me to tell everyone that she should be completely ignored,
just make like she doesn't exist, and go on about our work as we normally would.
So I'd just like to say we should respect that request.
So, Mark, what's the rundown?
Well, I discovered a little secret about Cynthia this morning on cable news.
Jim, Jim, Cynthia just asked us to respect her.
Yeah, no, this isn't about the movie.
I discovered a little secret about Cynthia this morning on cable news that I don't think anybody knows.
Today is Cynthia's birthday.
Happy birthday to you.
Hang in there, Cynthia.
Hang in there.
Happy birthday to you.
Okay, so I say I say boy.
You have no idea.
That's foghorn leghorn.
I know it is.
Your lips are flopping, but there's nothing coming out. I know it is. That one I got.
Your lips are flopping, but there's nothing coming out.
So this doesn't ring any bells for you.
Do you think you should be trashing your news anchor in front of me like this?
No, it doesn't.
But you know that's your voice.
That is my voice.
What was this?
What the?
What does the name Ken Finkelman mean to you?
Do you have any memory of your epic cameo in the newsroom?
No.
You have no memory of this?
This is wild to me.
This is sass Jordan Redux.
I didn't have a good time doing that.
Okay.
So there.
You buried this memory.
No. Don't apologize to me
So you had a bad experience recording this cameo
On Ken Finkelman's The Newsroom
Which was a very popular CBC series
So therefore
When you have that experience I get the vibe that you
Like you bury it
You move on, you bury it
And then
You were looking at me like you didn't know what I was playing. Honestly, I
did not know what you were playing. Seriously, I didn't.
And I, you know,
it was only one episode. It was a
long, long time ago.
And when it wasn't a good experience,
probably I don't, like, I don't remember any of the lines.
I don't remember, I don't remember.
You just blocked it out. You had a shitty time.
Now, Cynthia, what made it a shitty time?
Are you able to speak about it?
Yeah, I don't really want to sort of slam people who created that show.
Let's call them KF.
We won't name any names on this program.
You know, I think you're allowed to say when you enjoyed working with someone.
I'm sure there's people who could say they didn't enjoy working with me,
and that's just fine.
Give me a name of one person you didn't enjoy working with you.
Because I know someone who worked with you and had a great time.
Stu? He must pay you because I know someone who worked with you and had a great time. Stu?
He must pay you.
I swear to God.
I wish he paid me.
Stu, pay him.
This is not one of Cynthia's jams. I'm just going to play a bit of it because
then I'm going to ask you about...
I played this last time you were on.
You did play it last time. It's like your best
thing. It's cool.
You like this one?
It's the one to go to.
Okay. Some enchanted evening
You may see a stranger
You may see a stranger
Across a crowded room.
And somehow you know.
You sing.
I'll bring this recorded Cynthia down.
We've got live Cynthia.
At some point you'll see him again and again.
Cynthia Dale, please tell me, is there more music coming from you?
Like, what does the future hold?
Like, do you want to tease anything that you're working on?
No.
You're not retired, though. No. that you're working on? No, I,
I,
you're not retired though.
No,
performers don't retire.
No,
we don't retire.
They just die?
Yes,
true.
They just get old.
Um,
I,
I don't,
and I don't feel old,
but I,
I,
No,
63 is not old.
It's not old.
I don't feel old.
Um,
and life is really fantastic,
but I,
I,
there's a couple of things
but I don't really know.
Nothing you're able to put
into the public sphere.
No, and nothing that I really,
really, really, really want to do.
Any roles for me
in any of these projects?
I've never acted.
I feel it's time
to start my acting career.
Either for you or Stu.
If Stu gets my role,
I'll be pissed.
He gets enough roles, that guy.
He directs his own movies.
He should put Cynthia Dale
in one of his movies.
That's what he should do here.
All right. I just, you know, you have a great voice and i saw the one woman play that wasn't that long ago and i wonder what is cynthia working on but it sounds
like you're just enjoying life and uh you got a you know a couple of things that you're not ready
to talk about yet yeah and when you have something to talk about you know where to come we can kick
out more jams and that would be my new favorite number and that
would be the day that you wear your power jacket for me and i'd bring you a brick it's too bad you
don't have the kilt uh you just have to wear those i don't know about you listen it was groomed into
my mind as a teenager it's not my fault knee socks and kilts all right so all my gifts for you will
kill you therefore i'm giving you something that won't kill you. Okay? Okay. A wireless
speaker from
Moneris. Oh, wow. So you
can not only listen to Frank Sinatra
and all these great jams, you can listen to
season five of Yes
We Are Open, which is an award-winning podcast
from Moneris, hosted by
FOTM El Grego. He
didn't go to Scotland, but he did go to the
Maritimes, and he went to Newfoundland,
and he collected inspiring stories from small business owners,
and he shares them in Season 5 of Yes, We Are Open.
Fantastic.
Thank you so much.
And that won't kill you.
Christmas came early.
Christmas came early.
And also, Ridley Funeral Home.
They don't want to see you anytime soon, Cynthia.
Good, thank you.
But they do want you to have a nice measuring tape.
Okay. That won't kill you either. You know, when, but they do want you to have a nice measuring tape.
That won't kill you either. When I was 18 years old, in front of Michael Power, I was driving in a yellow Volkswagen Beetle with my boyfriend at the time.
On Dundas?
On Dundas Street, right near Michael Power, with my boyfriend at the time, Pete McGran.
And it was pouring in rain, and a car coming the opposite way made a u-turn very fast and we
couldn't stop and we smashed into him and i broke the windshield with my forehead i went through the
wind wow and they couldn't and we were had just come from apache burger the great institution
and i had i had a strawberry milkshake that went all over the place which he thought were my guts
that had gone oh my god place. Oh, my God.
It's traumatizing.
They couldn't get me out of the car.
And when they pulled me out of the car finally and laid me on the sidewalk,
when I could finally open my eyes, I looked up,
and I was right underneath a funeral sign.
What was the funeral party?
Turner and Porter.
That was them.
That was them right there.
They're the enemy, though.
I didn't say their name.
You said their name.
I didn't say their name.
That's okay.
But I was right there. This is an amazing story story so what was the ram effect like what happened you
got stitches and you're okay i got stitches i had yeah i had and i had glass coming out of my
forehead for a month is it my guessing that you weren't wearing a seat belt no i was wearing a
seat belt you're in a you're in a volkswagen you're like you're really close to the windshield
right it's like right there all right okay well I'm glad that you survived to tell the story many years later on Toronto Mike.
There you go.
That's wild.
Okay.
Turner and Porter.
I know it well.
It's on Dundas there.
But we bury FOTMs at Ridley Funeral Home.
Okay.
Let me be clear about that, Cynthia.
And it's your time.
Thank you for my early Christmas present.
Yes.
And everything else I have for you would kill you.
But I will shout out Great Lakes beer, delicious craft beer, if you can drink beer.
And of course, the most delicious.
Is it tough?
So, okay.
Am I allowed to talk about this?
Yeah, yeah, sure.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
To say why it would kill me, people are going to think like I'm weird.
What does she have against Italian food?
She's of Italian descent.
I eat Italian food all the time.
So you can't have gluten.
Is that right?
Yeah, I'm celiac.
Okay, but so you can get delicious pasta
that is gluten-free.
Absolutely. And I'll bet you, I bet you
Palma Pasta has gluten-free pasta.
And now that I wish I knew, I would have made a special order
for you. Okay, thank you. Because apparently
your mom had an event catered by Palma
Pasta in Etobicoke.
Does this jog any memory at all?
Only because I speak to the owner of palmapasta,
Anthony Picucci,
and I just let him know the great and wonderful Cynthia Dale was dropping.
But I didn't remember the celiac thing at the time.
And I was ordering a lasagna for you.
He'd done something for my mama.
And he said he remembered an event at your mom's place in Etobicoke that was
catered by palmapasta.
Was it my father's funeral?
Oh,
did you cater it?
I'm thinking that might have been.
Or a wedding.
We did weddings and funerals at the house.
Let's go with wedding.
Either or.
If you have a wedding or a funeral,
I really urge you to go to palmapasta.com.
And I'm sorry I don't have a gluten-free.
I will go to Palma Pasta and ask them sometime.
I'm sure.
I'm going to talk to Anthony.
I'm going to do a special delivery.
I'll bike to Stratford with my gluten-free pasta for you here.
All right.
One more quick shout out here
and then we're going to get to another jam.
This is wonderful.
I want to shout out
the Advantaged Investor Podcast
from Raymond James Canada.
Whether you already work
with a trusted financial advisor
or currently manage
your own investment plans,
the Advantaged Investor provides
the engaging wealth management information
you value, Cynthia,
as you pursue your most important goal.
Are you ready for another jam?
I value it. For once in my life
I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once unafraid
I can go where life leads me
Somehow I know I'll be strong For once I can go where life leads me, somehow I know I'll be strong.
For once I can test what my heart used to dream of, long before I do.
Oh, someone warm like you, would make my dream come true.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
For once in my life
I won't let sorrow hurt me
not like it's hurt me before
for once I have something
I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore
for once I can say
this is mine, you can't
take it. Long as I
know I have them, I
can make it. Oh, once in
my life, I have someone
who needs me.
Talk to me, Cynthia, about
Stevie Wonder. No, I'm finding it very emotional.
Buckle up.
The next two jams are going to have you bawling.
I'm just looking ahead here.
Yeah, you know, I mean, okay.
Other than kitchen dance parties,
the thing you should know about me is I cry a lot.
Like, I'm a crier.
I weep a lot.
Yeah, this is probably one of my mama's favorite songs
and the time and this music and what he was
and his music. and it just it's
this time of year it's it's life you know it just pushes a lot of buttons is it is it at this time
of year you miss people that you're uh used to celebrating the season yeah yeah totally get that
yeah yeah and i i mean i don't know you know I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but...
No, no, it's called Real Talk on this program.
It's Real Talk.
My dad died 25 years ago last week,
and this year is harder than the last 25 years have been.
Very interesting.
So, you know, it's just, it's a time.
There's like a lot of stuff.
Life is big, and life is big.
There's lots of stuff. The world is hard, and it is big. There's lots of stuff.
The world is hard, and it just pushes buttons for everybody. Субтитры создавал DimaTorzok Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream blue and the
dreams that you dare
to dream
really do come
true
someday
I'll wish upon a
star and wake up where the
clouds are far behind
me
where troubles melt like lemon drops clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops,
that's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Bluebirds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't
I
if happy little
bluebirds fly
beyond the rainbow.
Why, oh, why can't I?
There's certain music that is part of your DNA.
I think that song is part of my DNA.
It's very emotional in here, Cynthia.
I feel like I can feel it.
I can feel it.
And you kicking out the jams is the catalyst here.
And I feel like I'm in your mind now,
and I'm hearing these songs with your ears,
and it's quite the out of body experience.
It's quite something. Yeah, sorry.
I mean, I wish I could have sort of brought maybe some
rock and roll too. You know what? That's the
next time. Listen, this is the melancholy
jam.
But also, it was
the first hit.
They were the first hits
that came to me. And I love the way
you did it, actually. I like how you approached it here.
We have one jam to go and then there's a little bonus as we wrap up.
I will say this is one of my favorite artists of all time.
And this is my favorite song by this artist.
And I'm delighted you're kicking it out.
And well, let's listen and we'll talk on the other side. Let's listen.
Just before our love got lost, you said I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me, I'll be in the bar
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In a blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh, Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
It tastes so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would
still be on my feet
oh I would still be on
my feet
case of you
Joni Mitchell
there's a timber right
there's a timber there's things that's a timber. There's things that,
like, you know,
they talk about sounds
in the world.
The sound of a loon
or the sound of a whale
or a train whistle.
And there's the sound
of her voice,
the timber of her voice
that hits somewhere
other than your ears.
It's like even
the Joe Cocker song
at the very beginning.
There's a sound.
There's something that,
I don't know,
why do we pick songs? Why do songs very beginning. There's a sound. There's something that, I don't know, why do we pick songs?
Why do songs pick us?
There's a thing that happens that it's not about our ears.
It's somewhere else that it hits.
Did you always love Joni Mitchell?
Always loved Joni Mitchell.
Always loved Joni Mitchell.
There's a terrible, well, I don't know if it's terrible.
It was terrible when Chris Murphy uh chris murphy is the
one of the uh founders of sloan do you ever listen to sloan when you're in the okay so chris murphy
just was here last week and we were talking about what he deems to be a terrible cover of this song
that sloan did in the uh early 90s but it's actually not bad at all. He's just being self-deprecating, I think.
But a very different style.
But this is such an iconic song.
And she's, you know, that great line about Canada.
She's one of us.
Not a power graduate, though.
No, no.
She would maybe wear your sweatshirt.
Now you've got my attention, Cindy.
Was Joni Mitchell wearing my sweatshirt?
Dream come true.
I do want to tell you that you were recently in an episode of Murdoch Mysteries.
I was.
And I got a note from fellow Michael Power St. Joe's graduate, Rosie Ferguson,
who was in my graduating class, who was one of those, like,
what are they called?
Background performers who don't get to talk.
Oh, yeah.
But she was on there with you.
She just, anyway, I mentioned Cynthia Dale was coming on,
and she told me about filming Murdoch Mysteries with you.
Yeah, I loved doing it.
It was great.
It was a fantastically happy set.
I mean, you know, they run like an incredible machine.
Yes, they've been around a long time, and I see why.
Because they got a hit.
Yeah, they got a hit, and it was a really happy, happy set.
Bring back,
so your character
didn't die or anything?
I haven't seen this episode
in my apologies.
Oh no, she didn't die.
I'm hoping they bring her back.
Okay, let's bring back.
So the Murdoch people
listen to Toronto Mike.
Let's bring back the Cynthia.
Do you remember
the name of this character?
No.
Okay, it doesn't matter.
You don't just call her Cynthia, okay?
Let's bring back the
Cynthia Dale character
from Murdoch Mysteries
here. Alright, Joni...
Are you going to start a petition?
I've got some
petitions on the go here. I'm working on
Ontario Place right now and I'm going to
refocus. You know, they're treating
that big black wall.
It's a wooden wall they put. So, you know,
when we're on the Martin Goodman Trail, we can't see what
is happening. But
we know what's happening. They're making it like a blackboard.
So I took photos yesterday of
all the graffiti on there.
The politically charged
graffiti. I'll put this on in the background.
I didn't know. You didn't say
which one. So I actually pulled a couple.
Yeah, okay, whatever. Yeah, all of it.
It's on a loop right now in my house
in my heart
it is
Vince Giraldi trio
so what does Christmas
look like in your home
like
what time should I be there
Christmas is big
Stratford
I'll make the trip
to Stratford
Stratford is the Christmas home.
It's big.
Yeah, I went and got my tree last week.
And yeah, it's all decorated.
So it's a real tree.
Absolutely.
I will do a real tree to my dying day.
I will do a Christmas tree.
I know some people don't do Christmas trees for many, many reasons.
But you know what?
Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
You want the needles to fall off.
I do.
And you want that smell.
I sing Oh Christmas Tree to it every night before I go to bed.
Really?
You know what? Can you record?
I would like footage of you singing Oh Christmas Tree to your tree every night before you go to bed.
I just thank it for being there.
You've got quite the life, Cynthia.
I'll tell you, you look like you're enjoying life.
I am enjoying life.
I'm very grateful.
I am.
Okay.
So I wish you and the family
a very Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas.
Buon Natale.
Can you do more?
No.
That one's Italian, right?
It is.
Okay.
We should be able to do French.
Because my French immersion, my kids should tell me. Something Noel, right? It is. Okay, we should be able to do French. Because my French immersion,
my kids should tell me something Noel, right?
Yes.
All right.
And you will at some point in 2024,
I will coerce you back into the basement
to give you more things that will kill you
and kick out more gems.
And I promise I'll come back with Michael Power.
Stuff. It'd be wild if'll come back with Michael Power. Stuff.
It'd be wild if you came back with Michael Power.
He was a guy, right?
Like a bishop or something?
I guess.
Because we should tell people, like, it wasn't, we call it Michael Power, but it was Michael
Power St. Joseph's.
It was.
It was Michael Power St. Joseph's, yeah.
I feel like St. Joe's is getting...
We went to the football games at Centennial, which if they rename it...
What say you about that, Cynthia Day? Oh my gosh. I've ignored this story, but I want to hear your thoughts which if they rename it. What say you about that?
Oh, my gosh.
I've ignored this story, but I want to hear your thoughts.
Don't ignore it.
What should I do?
Should I sign a petition?
Sign a petition.
I'll be the first name on the bloody list.
I feel like this ship has sailed.
Like, I think we're going to lose this one.
Like, I can usually smell when it's a fight.
Really?
Really?
Can you smell how, like, sick and stupid and, like, wrong it is maybe, too?
There.
There.
That's how I feel about it.
There. There. I said it.
Okay, anything else you want to get off your chest?
Because this is the place again.
No, no, no.
Husband does not anchor the national anymore.
You can say what you think here.
Oh, you know, I probably said what I thought anyway.
As is my way.
And that brings us to the end of our 1000.
By the way, we played Fly Me to the Moon.
We played it earlier.
And I thought I should tell you.
I took a note to tell you and then I completely forgot.
Uh-oh.
My grad quote when I graduated Michael Power in 1993 was,
Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars.
That was my grad quote.
Fantastic.
And then you kicked it out.
Fantastic.
It's like you knew.
And I thought it was interesting
that you would kick out that song.
Like we're in sync, baby.
Sympatico.
That too.
And that brings us to the end of our 1,396th.
Is that what it is, Cynthia?
You know, it's your favorite number.
95, it's my favorite number.
95.
Yeah.
Did I tell you that?
It's my favorite number.
I know, but now I have to go,
now I'm going to go to my website in real time
because I feel like I recorded with Cam Gordon.
It was that number.
Oh no, it is 1,395.
And it's my favorite number.
Okay.
It all came together here.
