Starting point is 00:01:30 Funeral Home. Pillars of the community since 1921. I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com and joining me this fine Festivus morning is Elvis. Happy Festivus, Mike. Happy Festivus, Mike.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Happy Festivus, Elvis. Nice to see you. Good to see you. It's been a long time. Has it been exactly one year since I saw you? Did I not do any podcasts at all this year? I don't remember you coming in. You were in the backyard in 2020.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Is that what, I guess that was the last year. How did we do last year's Festivus? Was it on Zoom? I think so. Because we didn't have any vaccinations yet that's right yeah yeah yeah i was thinking i was thinking that on the drive-in i didn't i didn't remember how we did it i assumed that i was here i don't think i opened up this studio until we got our vaccine like we all got our second shot or something gotcha uh you would have been like
Starting point is 00:02:19 zooming in but this is much better like uh you're much more handsome in person it's weird it's very weird but yeah it's good um do you have your have you won the lottery to get your booster shot yet yeah i won the walmart lottery because uh i got it on sunday oh wow nice i know was it coincidence that you were in walmart at the time that they had them available or no because i've heard that before oh walmart told me i went to two so this is kind of an interesting story and that we just we decided to gamble so monica booked me something at uh what's the name of this place gerard square have you ever been to gerard square sure okay so it's not near where i live it's uh somewhere between you and north oshawa and me here in southern etobicoke on gerard maybe yeah something like that i can tell you i can tell
Starting point is 00:03:03 you i took kothra north because I took a photo of my bike under the Kothra Bridge because of the Lowest of the Low song. Right. Under the Kothra. Kothra. Did I say Kothra? I mean, Karla. Kothra is in Mississauga.
Starting point is 00:03:16 I was going to say. Come on, you're going to call me out on this. Karla. That tells you how familiar I am. My old hood. Kothra is your old hood. Correct. Karla.
Starting point is 00:03:24 That's where the Lowest of the Low were hanging out because they were at the only,ra is your old hood. Correct. Carla, that's where the lowest of the low were hanging out because they were at the only, which is like Danforth. Okay, so I'm at Girard Square to get my shot, and he says I'm too young. And I played dumb. I knew all the rules, and I knew I was doing something that technically wasn't allowed because they said it was Monday when you could do it.
Starting point is 00:03:42 And I was there on a Saturday. No, it was as of Friday for walk-ins. Walk-ins, right. So this Walmart said, we don't have walk-ins because I did this trick, like pretend I'm a walk-in. And they said, oh, we don't do that. Anyway, I did all this stuff. Like I said, oh, I just biked an hour in the snow.
Starting point is 00:03:57 And all these true like sad tales. And they said, are you a healthcare worker? And I had this moment of like, okay, Mike, this is the moment. Like we're going to find out what kind of an asshole you are. worker? And I had this moment of like, okay, Mike, this is the moment. Like, we're going to find out what kind of an asshole you are. What is your answer to this question? And I said, no, I'm not a healthcare worker. Would you have said you were a healthcare worker to get the shot?
Starting point is 00:04:14 No. That's even below you. Like, that's beneath Elvis. That is even below me. Yes. Anyway, I left this Walmart that was like an hour away on the bike. And I left it without a shot.
Starting point is 00:04:26 But then I went to a Mississauga, Dixie and Dundas. Is that near your old hood? I hung out there. There was pool halls there. So another Walmart on the Sunday and the guy was happy. He's like, he's happy to stick the needle in my arm and I got my booster on the Sunday. Have you got your booster appointment? I have not.
Starting point is 00:04:41 No, I have an appointment in North Oshawa for just down the street from where I live at the hockey arena is an immunization, mass immunization clinic. And I'm scheduled for January 27th, but I've been following Vax Hunters trying to get something a little bit sooner. So Monica's move is just to refresh
Starting point is 00:05:01 the Walmart appointment thing like throughout the day because people will cancel appointments and then that spot's open up. And she's had great, like my son who's turning 20 in a month already got his booster. So, you know, young James got his booster before old man Elvis. The website that I use is basically a scraper for the Walmart website. a scraper uh for for the walmart uh walmart website that it so it proactively shows you like it's like wherever they have appointments available and then you can quickly jump onto the walmart website so you know speaking of quickly they quickly went from like uh 50 plus and then like a week later they said 18 plus do you feel like i feel like we should have like maybe let's
Starting point is 00:05:40 do 35 plus for a little while well what they should have done was what they should have done was said, Hey, we know everyone who has had a vaccine. Right. Here is your appointment for your booster shot. Like that would date. Like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Like, are you saying like, so you get it because you have six months after your seven, you probably have like some people who are, you know, eight months out that still don't have it. And then there's probably some people that are six months plus one day or whatever. That would nicely stagger things too.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Of course, you know, the government's only had two years now to figure all this stuff out. Of course. My sincere condolences. Last time you were in my backyard, I was giving you sincere condolences. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. I was, because your father had passed away and you were very, is that too, it's festive. So your father had, that's his. Your dad died, shout out to the funeral home.
Starting point is 00:06:37 So, and again, again, again, my sincere condolences. And you were. Can you really say sincere condolences? I mean, come on. It's been over a year. That's fantastic. I'll listen to that over again. I have a new sincere condolences to you.
Starting point is 00:06:57 I was sad to learn that the mighty Teemu... Teemo. Teemo. Teemo, yes. Teemo, sorry. Yeah, we had a golden retriever for, and he was 13 years old, and had to make the decision to,
Starting point is 00:07:11 the adult human decision, as you are entrusted to make when you are a pet owner, to put the old man down. That was for Moose Grumpy. So I lifted my glass, because Moose Grumpy asked if we were my glass because Moose Grumpy said, asked if we were day drinking and I was just pointing out
Starting point is 00:07:27 we're actually drinking coffee right now. Right, I drank mine already. What's up, Moose? So yeah, we put him down and I didn't, it's one of these moments of parenting that I didn't fully appreciate because as the adult,
Starting point is 00:07:43 I was prepared. I knew that it was coming and ultimately made the decision, but the impact that this had on my kids. Do they think that you murdered their dog? No, no, but they don't. Um, at least my, my oldest didn't really truly understand why, right. She, like it got to the point where she was saying, you know, just put them in my room. I'll bring him food. I'll deliver it to him, blah, blah, blah. So she, it like, it got to the point where she was saying, you know, just put him in my room. I'll bring him food. I'll deliver it to him. So she, it was, it was really tough.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And still is. She's, everyone is still, you know, mourning him. 13 years he lived with us. But your, your Timo was ill? He was old. He was old. And his back legs. Having trouble getting upstairs.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Yeah. His back legs weren't working very well. Right. So it was, it was, he was, he was, I mean, he still, the vet said, you know, like when she looked in his eyes, she could still see dog in him. Like he wasn't totally gone, but, um, he just couldn't move around anymore. It was, it was painful. And you did that.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Of course, we, we adults understand that you made that decision, that difficult decision out of love for Timo. Correct. Yeah. It is a difficult concept for a child. It's really hard because, yeah, I mean, again, there was nothing. He was old, right? But he wasn't sick.
Starting point is 00:08:53 He wasn't, you know. Right. So it's probably even harder to comprehend, like, why would you do that? Because we certainly wouldn't do that to human, although we probably should for some. Well, you know, yeah, it depends how you define. Like, maybe not because they break their legs, but we do, you know, give a caring exit for our loved ones if they have a terminal illness
Starting point is 00:09:14 or in various situations. And I think that's very humane. And I just want to say I'm sorry. Thank you, sir. For your loss. It was tough. Every time you visit, there's another loss. Have you ever put down a pet?
Starting point is 00:09:27 Well, the dog I left with my first wife was very, very old and was put down, yes. But I wasn't there. Like, were you there? I was, yeah. Like, my wife and I went to the vet, and then we were in the room, and then we had the option to leave at one point, and I stayed. My wife left. And, yeah, I mean, it was very peaceful.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Right. But it was pretty, pretty intense. Well, on that note, Merry Christmas to everybody. How is it like? It's been tough. And I'm sorry. Yeah, that does suck. You've had some losses in your life, Elvis.
Starting point is 00:10:00 But how otherwise, how are things going in the Elvis household? And how was 2021 other than losing your beloved dog i don't i don't like saying this because it's uh it's cliche and stuff but i'm it wasn't a great year for for me and i'm i'm happy to turn the page on 2021 i know it's shout out to bob seger it's an art of he's dead too isn't he no he's fucking alive he's alive yeah he's absolutely alive. Bob Seger's alive? Yeah, he's absolutely alive. All right, well, Ridley Funeral Home. I haven't checked the news today.
Starting point is 00:10:31 If he died, it's your fault. Really? I thought for sure he was dead. No, I don't know who you're confusing him with, but Bob Seger's alive. I'm going to look it up. Turn the page. How about shout out to Metallica? I know that's your favorite band of all time. Oh, by the way, we're going to come back to what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Yeah, he's alive. Who is it that I'm thinking of? Joe Cocker, I'm just kidding. Oh, by the way, we're going to come back to what you're saying. Yeah, he's alive. Who is it that I'm thinking of? Joe Cocker, I'm thinking of. Yeah, he died. Yeah, he's the one. He's the dead guy. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. That's the fucking greatest thing.
Starting point is 00:10:56 That's the thing I started doing and I don't know how to stop it, but I'm doing these like... So every time someone dies, you shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. Well, no, no. But when you trigger a name in my head i now shout out that person like i like as if i have some kind of Tourette's or something like
Starting point is 00:11:10 it's so like you know it's like a jukebox you'll say a name and i'll be like you know shout out to uh kim stockwood or whatever like like i did like whatever name is fantastic like they're listening yeah like just it's just stupid listening to this no one's listening to this if i had a program director they might tell me like stop doing that but the problem here is i'm the program director who's gonna tell me to stop yeah you do everything are you still you're still doing the hummel and fred gig i was on uh yeah i produced their show and i was literally they had like a for patrons uh they had like a an open zoom and i was on that i set my alarm to be on that at 7 30 a.m and uh that was this morning and i was doing that. I set my alarm to be on that at 7.30 a.m.
Starting point is 00:11:47 And that was this morning. And I was doing that literally up until you showed up. And how many podcasts do you produce now? I don't have a number, but some nice corporate ones for some good companies. And I do like Dana Levinson's and Ralph Benberg's and of course, Peter Gross's and Mark Hebbshire's. I'm still doing... We have a member of the Tragically Hip
Starting point is 00:12:03 on our show tomorrow. Who? That's huge. Is it Gord? It's Gord. Shout out to Ridley Pino. Is it Gord?
Starting point is 00:12:16 You know, there's two Gords in that band. I wasn't wrong. No, you're not wrong, but it is not Gord. It is actually. That's true.
Starting point is 00:12:22 That works two ways. It's Rob Baker. Oh, nice. Which is great. So's true. That works two ways. I, it's Rob Baker. Oh, nice. Which is great. So he's on Hebsey on Sports tomorrow morning because now we have guests.
Starting point is 00:12:29 What is he going to talk about? We're going to talk about sports. So I think Rob is a big Leafs fan and we're going to, yeah. Gotcha. Yeah. Well,
Starting point is 00:12:36 there's not much to talk about as it relates to Leafs at the moment. No, there's not much to talk about. Nothing seems to be happening and people say, nothing's happening and then,
Starting point is 00:12:43 you know, people like Humble Howard and these golf fanatics are talking about like tiger and his kid and i gotta tell you this is just mike talking here i don't give a fuck about some uh tournament with like fathers and sons or whatever uh it's interesting that did you watch did you follow it because i had no interest in it no i'm not gonna watch that i thought it was more interesting that chris daly's son is chris d. Is it Chris Daly? Mark Daly. No, Mark Daly is the voice. And I work with
Starting point is 00:13:07 a guy named Chris Daly. Who's the Daly golfer guy? Oh, John Daly. John Daly. His son is John Daly II. I thought that was it. I always find that interesting. John Daly Jr. Yeah, I saw the Roman numerals when I looked it up. It wasn't Jr. Did you ever have a moment where you thought,
Starting point is 00:13:24 you have a son. Did you say, I'm going to name him Elvis? No. No, never. No, never did I. That's the most arrogant, like how big is your ego that you basically give your son
Starting point is 00:13:34 the same name, like give him a unique identity. Yeah, my brother-in-law is named after my father-in-law. That's a weird move. It is. It's confusing too, isn't it? Yeah, it's super confusing.
Starting point is 00:13:43 You got to give him a nickname like Junior or Bubba or something. Yeah, my dad had the same name as his brother and dad. Wow. Okay, I think I interrupted you. I think you were about to tell us about the Elvis household in 2021. Oh, yeah, yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:56 It's just been, it's not been a great year. Is that because of COVID? A bunch of things. I think, yeah, COVID certainly plays a big part of that. I got a new job within the same company that I work with that has been challenging. We're doing a pretty significant renovation. I like things in order,
Starting point is 00:14:15 and obviously there's not a lot of order. You're renovating that new home, doesn't it? I feel like that was just built. It's not new. It's 13 years old now. Oh, my goodness. It's younger than the dog you killed. I know.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Yeah, well, I should have kept him and then i when i burned down the fucking house after the renovation like he could have just i would have saved you know how expensive it is to put down a dog too by the way holy give me a number i need to know 550 bucks i think i paid and i it was the no frills package like it was note to self i need a sponsor in 2022 that euthanizes dogs and here's the thing they ask you what do you want to do with the ashes right or actually what do you want to do with the body you can you can actually take it back if you want like for a taxidermist or something or i guess or bury it yourself i think you can bury i think it's legal to bury it in your backyard i'm assuming so why else would they give me the body but then if you choose cremation you have two routes routes roots that you can choose you can do like a communal cremation where you where they just put a whole bunch of animals into a fire pit and that's it and then they do one like a singular
Starting point is 00:15:16 one where you can actually get the ashes um and then you can you can obviously cremate and not get the ashes at all which is what we. Okay, so you never got the ashes. Maybe it would be good for your oldest daughter who's struggling to have a ceremony in the garden. We'll do a celebration of life or something. So you'll just take any ashes? No, we didn't take any. No, you fake it.
Starting point is 00:15:36 You go burn some paper. Yeah, it's going to be like a Big Lebowski. That's what I want to do. I want to do the Big Lebowski coffee can and then have everything blow in her face. Oh, I love it. Honestly. Okay, so i'm
Starting point is 00:15:45 sorry to hear that it's been a tough year but yeah and then my uh my wife actually left you got covid oh really yeah right just right before we put the dog down so it was a crazy and uh how were her uh how was her zero sim so apparently mean, it's super rare. Of course, not super rare, but it's rare to get COVID when you're double vaxxed. And then it's even more rare, apparently, to have literally no symptoms. Zero. She had no symptoms whatsoever. Not even a misplaced fart. But, you know, it's not as rare now.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Like this new variant is easier to get. This was pre-Omnicron. Right. So it's like maybe Delta or something. Right. It was most likely. I like how we all have to like, so it was like maybe Delta or something like that. Right, it was most likely Delta. I like how we all have to like, oh, I got the Delta. Which brand do you got?
Starting point is 00:16:29 They said, technically, the health department said that she could follow up with them a month after she was tested positive to find out which one she had, but they said, for the most part, it's likely Delta. Anyway, so she had to self-isolate in the house. She got it from school because she's a teacher. She's a frontline worker. The class was sent home because she was the third person in the class to get it. And then eventually her school was the third highest infection rate in the entire province.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Wow. But she's still taught from home online. Right. Because she was asymptomatic. Correct. And she could, she was totally fine. And so we all got tested, and we were all negative, weirdly enough, except for my middle daughter. She came back inconclusive, which they treat as a positive. So she then had to self-isolate with my wife. Yeah, that's shitty. But there was like a three-day difference, so she ended up having to do three days on her own.
Starting point is 00:17:20 But my wife was superwoman at the end of her 10 days, so she could go back and forth between the two groups in the house. I had to take, I had to take time off work cause I couldn't, the kids were not in school cause they can't go remote if you're in person cause they were in person. Right. So I had to take a bunch of time off and then, uh, and play Mr. Mr. Dad.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Oh, you get Mr. Mom. Plus Mr. Belvedere. That's a Michael Keaton. I was literally going upstairs to bring food on trees. Drinks on the table. Never seen it before. Belvedere. That's a Michael Keaton. I was literally going upstairs to bring food on trains. Drinks on the table, never seen it before. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:17:48 And then just previous to that, I was having a tough time getting through my cancer anniversary again this year. For whatever reason, I can't explain it. What is it? Remind me, what day is your cancer anniversary? There's two that I sort of, that come to mind. Double dipping, I think. Mine is September 15th is when I was diagnosed.
Starting point is 00:18:03 And then tomorrow is the anniversary of me coming uh getting my first sort of negative test how many years have you been cancer free 12 okay good for you uh well officially yeah uh three like three years ago the doctor told me that they don't consider me a cancer patient anymore, but you lose your, uh, do you write to say, I'm a, but you're still a survivor, right?
Starting point is 00:18:28 Cause I would like open with that when I meet. And I would also suggest that my families are survivors too, just in different ways. No. Okay. I'm going to just shout out the Elvis household. Uh, cause I know they're listening.
Starting point is 00:18:39 It's been, yeah. No, yeah. Yeah. I finished that. It just hasn't been a great year and you know it hasn't been a great year for a lot of people and you know covid obviously is is impacted i i like
Starting point is 00:18:51 i like people but i i traveled to uh the u.s uh one one trip this year and the only reason why i did travel is because i needed to renew my work visa so it was a must-have right and i just found myself i don't know but maybe not with you because you've been talking to people and engaging with people. But I have found it very challenging to figure out how to interact with people in person. Well, it'll be very interesting to listen back to this episode and see how you did. Well, I mean, just even chatting with your wife upstairs. I can see this.
Starting point is 00:19:21 And then when I was at work, I was like, am I talking too much, too little? Am I talking too close, too far away? Out of practice. And that was like my mojo. So it's tough. That's a great segue because I'm not having that problem for the obvious reason that I did check the stats. So the last Festivus app, because you come on Toronto Mic every single December 23rd to celebrate Festivus in some regard. Today, by the way, we're going to have, we each pick five songs from five musical acts
Starting point is 00:19:53 that people dig, but we don't. Like it's sort of like people love this band or this act, but I personally don't love them. I hate them or whatever. They're generally popular, right? If you were to poll 100 people, you get a vast majority of them saying that they like if you were the guy who hates the beatles you know you'd play him you know everybody loves this fucking band i hate these guys and here's those people exist anymore like once we got past the beatles versus rolling stones uh no debate and when did that end like in the 70s? Yeah, that's been over for a long time. I think what happens now
Starting point is 00:20:26 is I believe is that you can be somebody who thinks, they're an okay band, they're fine, but they don't do it for me. That sentiment exists. There's a minority of people. But I don't think there is anyone really around who's going to say the Beatles suck. But you're going to be saying that about five
Starting point is 00:20:42 acts. We won't tip our hands. And I did the same. So we have ten acts in total, five of them. I, you despise five. I despise. But before that, actually,
Starting point is 00:20:51 we're going to do a really quick, uh, battle of the terrible Christmas songs thing that you don't even know is coming. So that's a special treat. Woo. But since the last Festivus ep, which was,
Starting point is 00:21:00 let's see, I checked out the, uh, permanent archive there and it was episode 776. So you were last on Toronto, Mike, 776. This episode, as we speak now, is episode 973. That's almost exactly 200 episodes. Wow, so you did 200 plus episodes this past year?
Starting point is 00:21:18 Which is why I actually am totally like comfortable talking to people. I literally had 200 long form conversations with people I don't live with. Plus dark episodes. Cause I was actually on a couple of dark episodes, at least this year, one, a couple of weeks ago. And then I think there was one earlier in the year. Well, they're numbered episodes. So they're in this 200. Yeah. That's a numbered episode. No, those are numbered. There were dark episodes, but those weren't them. So you were on the, yeah, it was nice to see you on the holiday, uh, open zoom. So, uh, FOT numbered. There were dark episodes, but those weren't them. So you were on the, yeah, it was nice to see you on the holiday,
Starting point is 00:21:45 uh, open zoom. So, uh, FOTMs could join us and there was a good crew there. Good to see you there. Uh, that's where we made the big announcement that,
Starting point is 00:21:54 uh, pandemic Fridays are coming back and they're going to have a new name. They're going to be known as toast and that debuts in January. So that's something for you. Once a month. Once a month. Yeah. Third Thursday of every month. So how much do you have to pay? Uh, what, isn't it? Once a month. Yeah. Third Thursday of every month.
Starting point is 00:22:05 How much do you have to pay? What's his name? Stu. Stu Stone? Yeah. He is the tough one. Isn't that why he quit? I just have Cam pay him.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Cam does that. Hey, this is, so my very awkward way of asking, and be very honest with me. Yeah. There's 200 episodes. Other than those two,
Starting point is 00:22:24 you know, open Zooms that you joined, which was wonderful. Did you listen to a single one of those 200 episodes? I won't run down the list of 200 because it would take an hour and a half. Oh,
Starting point is 00:22:33 I know that you, usually we try and do this once a quarter, right? But obviously this hasn't. COVID's fucked up. Yeah, we haven't been able to do that.
Starting point is 00:22:40 I'm pretty sure I listened to at least one. I was thinking about it this morning. Wow. 0.5%. But I can't remember which one. I was thinking about it this morning. Wow. 0.5%. But I can't remember which one. It might have been two, actually, honestly. But I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:22:53 So what is it? You know what? You do a good job of pinging me saying, like, hey, you would like this one. And I don't always listen to them, but those are the ones that I typically seek out. So even the return of Ann Roszkowski couldn't move the needle.
Starting point is 00:23:05 No. No offense to Ann. I know Ann is a legend, but she's not super exciting to me. Oh, she's a real talk legend, though. She is super exciting to most FOTMs. So my question is, you're the FOTM who doesn't love Toronto Mike. Well, I love Toronto Mike. Of course I do.
Starting point is 00:23:20 How come you only listen to one? I don't listen to podcasts. It's not my thing. So you're not listening to smart listens? No, no. I don't listen to podcasts. It's not my thing. So there's not another. You're not listening to like smart. No, no. This is the thing. I understand why it's strange that I don't listen to one of my good buddies podcast. I would listen to your podcast.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Even if it was shitty. I probably listen. I appreciate that. But it's not like as if I'm listening. I'm not cheating on you by listening to anything else. I'm not. I mean, you know, I'm not. You're just married to like your satellite radio.
Starting point is 00:23:42 I listen. No, I don't even. No, not really. I don't even listen to. I listened to serial way back in the day. Remember when that was super positive, super popular. Yeah. But beyond that, I haven't listened to, and a couple of other true crime ones around that same time, but I haven't listened really since then.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Okay. Well, do you run anymore? Are you still running? I do. Yeah. So what do you listen to when you run? So we got a, uh, Peloton. I bike, I bike and run indoors. That's another thing.'m never running or you don't do it outside never doing it outside
Starting point is 00:24:10 again and never again um and i thought i would hate the treadmill and i kind of do but it's it's so much easier um so i've been running on the peloton um i can tell you my stats if you want strava just said go ahead i don't know what it will mean, but tell me. How many kilometers I ran or whatever this year. But I listen to whatever the instructor is playing. I usually pick a rock-themed class. There's a good one. There's a Chris Cornell one, which is interesting. The instructor plays Chris Cornell as though he is.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Like a solo act? No, the audio slave singer exclusively, which I find interesting. Oh, not Soundgarden. Yeah, no, he refers to his punk rock roots, he called it, but he doesn't play anything... Yeah, because Soundgarden is so punk rock. Correct.
Starting point is 00:25:01 And then there's a Foo Fighters-themed one, and then there's a couple of other ones. There's a Queen one, and then there's a couple of other ones that are just like mixed bags. All typically listen to rock music while I'm running. That I won't take it personally. You're missing out. There were some great. I've heard that listening to podcasts while you're running is a good idea or even audio. I don't even listen to audio books. Like I put on podcasts when I bike and then I'll do like a let's say 30K later, I don't even realize I started the ride because I've been so kind of caught up in the content.
Starting point is 00:25:28 I've been watching when I ride, I usually put on Seinfeld. Yeah, that would work. I always thought when I used to record in the VHS, sometimes I would listen to them like with my eyes closed in bed and think that they really translated well to like audio form like Seinfeld. Like it's kind of a radio show. But I would set up my, I set up my laptop in front of me on the table.
Starting point is 00:25:47 So you can see it. Gotcha. Hey, so I, you don't know this is happening, but I'm going to play a little bit of a Christmas song. I think you dislike, and you can elaborate as I play it.
Starting point is 00:25:55 And then I'm going to play a Christmas song that I personally dislike. And we're going to kind of talk about which one's worse. So here, let me bring in a song for you, Elvis. This is the annual tradition where I can shit on this song. It's Christmas time. There's no need to be afraid. At Christmas time, we let in light and we vanish it.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy. Put your arms around the world at Christmas time. So the message is, let's put our arms around the world at Christmas time because we kind of should and, you know, we're being compelled to, but no other time of the year. And we live in this world of plenty yet, you know, don't share any of it, of course. Like be selfish.
Starting point is 00:26:59 This is, you know, this is what we're seeing from society, of course, over the last couple of years is it's all about you. It's not about anybody else. All right, let's get to the Bono part, and then we'll come back to you. Poor Bono. We're the only water flowing The bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring there
Starting point is 00:27:22 Are the clanging chimes of day Ladies and gentlemen, the true meaning of Christmas. Thank God it's them and not you. Wow. We've seen a lot of that, right? Like this is really, I feel like this is summed up a lot of what society is doing at the moment, especially south of the border, but certainly here too, right? It's all about your, like thinking about yourself first. You work with a lot of Americans, right?
Starting point is 00:27:52 I do. Yes. What, like, cause I hear anecdotally people will be like, oh, they're just living life like everything's normal down there. But I don't really know how anyone else lives cause I just, you know, live my life here. So. Um, I mean, I work work with with a lot of americans who live in fairly liberal cities but even liberal u.s cities are typically not as liberal as toronto
Starting point is 00:28:14 say um so yeah i mean i don't know i it's hard it's i don't know i don't want to shit on anyone they can do what they want i guess but you, I'm not leaving my house, basically. But you're here now. Was that a difficult decision? It was. Because the TMDSU is still open for people with two shots in their arm. I'm typically not going anywhere but the grocery store. And once my two younger ones got their first, they've only got one shot.
Starting point is 00:28:44 We did go to a couple of restaurants inside, but I mean, because we're renovating, like I just don't want to eat on paper plates anymore and, you know, like fucking warm shit up on a hot plate. You can come here. I'm having a Christmas Eve meal here. You're invited. And it's going to be catered by Palma Pasta.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Literally after you leave today, Monica and I, Michelle or my mom, somebody's going to watch the two little ones because Monica and I have a hot date at Palma's Kitchen to pick up the food for tomorrow. I messaged my wife to ask her if the big family gathering is still happening on Saturday. And if it's not, I'm going to go there myself. And I have something for you before you leave. So this is my gift to the Elvis household. You're taking home a lasagna from Palma Pasta.
Starting point is 00:29:29 This is great. Is that why you're here? It's going to go right into the toaster oven. It's awesome. Be straight up with me. You would do it via Zoom, but you realize via Zoom you don't get the lasagna. No. That's the deal here.
Starting point is 00:29:40 So thank you, Palma Pasta, though. Honestly, once you try Palma. I think Tish Eyston tweeted at me the other day that I gave her a lasagna because she visited last week, and you don't know who that is, but she was on CHFI for 17 years. I'm surprised you're not a big CHFI fanatic. I bet you they played that song I just played,
Starting point is 00:29:56 Do They Know It's Christmas? I bet you they played that several times a day. They start November 1st, right, Christmas Carols? I know. I think they... I'm pretty sure CHFI is November 1st. I believe it'ss? I know. I think they... I'm pretty sure CHFI is November 1st. I believe it's later than that because I believe they let Remembrance Day
Starting point is 00:30:08 happen first. Like, I think it happens more like mid to late November. That's what... I think this year anyway. Like, it probably happened on like the 20th or something.
Starting point is 00:30:17 19th or something like that. That's my guess. And the other thing is it used to be that they coincided it with the Santa Claus Parade because CHFI was a big sponsor
Starting point is 00:30:24 of the Santa Claus Parade. So basically, the Santa Claus Parade would be like a Sunday and then that Monday they'd start the All Christmas and that's always after Remembrance Day. But they cancelled that damn parade, at least the live version of it, the last couple of years. So it's kind of throwing things off. But I believe this year
Starting point is 00:30:39 Christmas music started in mid to late November. So there was a post on November 9th saying that they were going to start it on Friday. So when was November 9th? November 9th was, no, so it started on the 10th. I would be shocked. And again, I'll have to check my records here. I would be shocked if it's, and that's for 2021?
Starting point is 00:30:55 Yep. Sure. Yep. We'll post it on November 9th, 2021. Let's assign this to Moose Grumpy. She's on the Pirate Stream, live.torontomic.com. Moose Grumpy, your job now, and I will check in to see
Starting point is 00:31:05 the results of your research, your job right now is to find out what day did CHFI go all Christmas music in 2021? It's actually on chfi.com. Okay, so they started on 9th. All Christmas music starts Friday at 7am, and this is posted on November 9th. And November
Starting point is 00:31:21 9th. What day of the week was November 9th? November 9th was a... Elvis is checking his calendar on his nice iPhone. Oh, no, no, no, I was looking at December. My bad. November 9th. And November 9th. What day of the week was November 9th? November 9th was a... Elvis is checking his calendar on his nice iPhone. Oh, no, no, no. I was looking at December. My bad. November 9th was a Tuesday. It's a 12th. 12th. I think they let Remembrance Day happen first. It's so weird. What do they... It's like respect to the fallen soldiers
Starting point is 00:31:38 or something like that. Like, start that Christmas music. Well, I want my Christmas music on the first. Jesus. You probably have a station on your serious exam that has. Yeah. One Oh five. Holly. And you,
Starting point is 00:31:50 you let, Oh, that's the name of your daughter. Yeah. Now it all makes sense. That's why you love Christmas so much. You named your daughter. That's right.
Starting point is 00:31:56 The Holly channel is pop Christmas music. So, which the kids love. So it's all like, you know, poppy stars. In addition to the Palm of Boston, before I kick out the Christmas jam I hate
Starting point is 00:32:06 that gets played ad nausea this time of year, I just want to let you know, Elvis, I've got some Great Lakes beer
Starting point is 00:32:11 for you to bring back. Oh, beautiful. Thank you very much. Fresh craft beer, brother. If you, I love Great Lakes. And I told you that
Starting point is 00:32:18 I've been buying local brewery stuff in, something made in the Dirty Schwa. In Whitby, actually. But it's very similar. It's like they have like the funky cans like this
Starting point is 00:32:30 and everything like that too. And funky names. So yeah. Well... If you play Last Christmas, I'm going to punch you in the fucking face. It better not be that song. That's your favorite Christmas song.
Starting point is 00:32:38 It is. And as we heard, because you contributed to the first FOTM KOTJ Holiday Edition. Oh, that's right. Yes. That was another episode I was on. Oh, that's right. Yes. That was another episode I was on. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:47 So you run a few episodes. Okay. You find a back door onto the show. All right. This is the song and I think this is going to get me in trouble with a lot of people, but I did spill the beans to Hawksley Workman
Starting point is 00:32:57 when he kicked this out as one of his favorite Christmas songs. I hate the song passionately. All of it. And here is the song in question. Here we go. The mood is right The spirits up We're here tonight
Starting point is 00:33:30 And that's enough Simply having A wonderful Christmas time Simply having A wonderful Christmas time Okay, I'm bringing this down to say I realize Paul McCartney is an extremely gifted songwriter and the aforementioned Beatles
Starting point is 00:33:50 produced some of the most wonderful music of the last century. And like anyone else, I think that's a great band, the Beatles. But this jam, I think it's terrible. All of it, the way... All of it to me is awful noise and i'm shocked at how popular this song has become i can only assume it's popular because all these stations have to play all christmas all the time and hey this is sir paul fucking mccartney and wings and wings right yeah and yeah band on the run of course a lot of great wings shit out there but the ding dong like i
Starting point is 00:34:21 just need to know elvis do you love this song as much as most people? No. No, I don't. I just looked it up. It was released in 1979. I was going to say that in my little homage to Last Christmas, I said that, I think that was 84 that that one came out. Sounds about right. It was like a perfect 80s song. And listening to this, it sounds like an 80s song, but it came out in 79. I mean, it's like just straddling that decade border.
Starting point is 00:34:44 an 80s song but it came out in 79 i mean it's like just straddling that decade border but this is a song that is an 80s song that doesn't really jive anymore i think like was it ever good like i can't i was listening to uh big bird and oscar in 1979 that's a that's a true damn story i'm not even sure were you born in 1979 of course i was you were still in the diaper what i was gonna ask you what what year are you are you 75 or 74? Are you two years older than me or what? 74. 74. So my boyfriend, Tim, was born in 75, and I'm 76. So this is, I was going to ask you, are you,
Starting point is 00:35:17 one of the things that has really sparked for me in 2021 is my extreme love has grown for Tim and Sid. Really? That's a big disconnect for me in 2021 is my extreme love has grown for tim and sid and and tim really that's a that's a big disconnect for me uh tim is somebody uh he's one year older than me and you're two years older and i'm just thinking that that would be have you had tim or sid uh tim has never responded to any of my requests and sid uh no i got them backwards sorry sid has never responded ever to any of my requests. And Tim has written me very nice notes to say,
Starting point is 00:35:49 buddy, one day we're going to do this. I just haven't really followed up. Well, Sid's picture is on the road up here. He's got a, he's on the Humber College banner on the signpost. Oh, alongside Dina Pulezi is also one of the banners I keep seeing. Oh, is she really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:07 That's a Humber College graduate, I suppose. I was trying not to crash when I saw Sid. I was very excited. But yeah, I love Tim and Sid. So you love Tim and Sid. You know what? I like them together, but I seem to have really grown to love them apart. So you're watching Breakfast Television now? Every morning.
Starting point is 00:36:20 Wow. I mean, Breakfast Television was always on, right? But now I'm home. So yeah. Wow. I'm home. So, yeah. Wow. Definitely watching breakfast television. So, on the live stream, real quick, Moose Grumpy did do her due diligence and has confirmed that it was November 12th.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Yes. My bad. I was looking at the wrong month. Sorry, Moose. Thank you. The brother is also on the live stream. He says, funny story. These two songs lead off my Christmas mix.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Isn't that the guy you have a feud with? Is that feud still going on? Brother Bill or Fearless Fred? Who's the DJ? Oh, Fearless Fred. That goes back a long time. That's before Toronto Mike. That's still going on? I don't know if it's still going on, but he came on Humble and Fred like 10 years ago
Starting point is 00:37:00 and shit all over the comments at TorontoMike.com. I love it. I never actually have had a conversation with Fearless Fred, so I don't know. I just like calling him. I would like Fearless Fred on the show just to ask him, like, what was that rant about? Because it's on my YouTube page somewhere.
Starting point is 00:37:12 Wasn't it Bob McCowan that thought that you planted the comments as well? Like, didn't someone say that you were making up the comments? No, no, no, no, no. Bob McCowan, I invited him to be my guest for episode 500, and he went on Twitter to say, No, no, no, no. Bob McCowan, I invited him to be my guest for episode 500. And he went on Twitter to say, apparently my followers think as if they all have one big fucking brain. Well, you tell us what to do. Right.
Starting point is 00:37:34 I'm like a cult leader. I get faxes from you telling me what to think all the time. Rapid fax. Get Monica Diolo on the line. Okay. So he said that my followers, it's like I'm Jesus and you're my apostle. Yeah, well, hey.
Starting point is 00:37:46 My followers think he's a dinosaur, so he's going to take a pass. Meanwhile, this is not even true. I've never even heard this sentiment. I think he confused me with Mike in Boston who was blogging at a blog. I think it was sold to like gambling interests, but TorontoSportsMedia.com.
Starting point is 00:38:04 That's what it was, yeah. Right. So, yes. By the way, YYZ says happy Festivus to you. Oh, thank you, YYZ. Yes. Thank you. Why were you not at TMLX8 at Great Lakes Brewery?
Starting point is 00:38:18 Yeah, again, I just... It's outdoors. You don't even do outdoors things. You haven't been to any TFC matches or anything? No, I haven't been to TFC since the home opener of 2020. Wow. Which in high,
Starting point is 00:38:28 it was funny because I think I told you the story but just very quickly, it was right at the beginning of the pandemic. It was the home opener. It was the only match that happened
Starting point is 00:38:37 that season at BMO and three weeks, four weeks after I went with my buddy and we messaged each other. We were like, maybe we shouldn't have gone to a game with 30,000 people. But at that point in time, we didn't even know that COVID was bad.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Like the Thursday, which was the 12th of March 2020, I was in Lorne Honickman's downtown law office having a long chat with him. And he was telling me, the the night before he was at the leaf game and literally this is the 12th of march that 13th of march is the day we all we picked up our kids at school and never went back yeah that last that last day before march break right and we had a bit of that going on the last week i will say though i personally and this these words will come back to haunt me so uh edit out these words and play them uh when at ridley funeral home when it's my funeral uh i do not i personally do not fear the omicron variant but at the same time
Starting point is 00:39:31 i'm gonna be careful a i'm gonna make sure i get every booster available to me whenever they say i'm eligible like so i'm gonna get every single fucking vaccination i can for covid19 and then b i'm making sensible choices like i will let one-on-one conversations like this happen with people who have two shots in them, but I'm not going to like, I purposely didn't go to see Lois de Valo
Starting point is 00:39:50 last Thursday at the... Has anyone said no to you? Yeah. Or people like, I was wondering this this morning too while I was taking a shower. Are there any anti-vaxxers
Starting point is 00:40:00 amongst the FOTM? If there are anti-vaxxers amongst the FOTM, they there are anti-vaxxers amongst the FOTM, they have not disclosed this. I know that there's former FOTMs who are anti-vaxxers, particularly a gentleman you probably met at a TMLX in the past, Mr. Lou Skeezes.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Oh, he's anti-vaxxed. I didn't know that. He's quite deep down that rabbit hole there of the whole conspiracy, the plandemic is what they like to call it. But he's sort of, he's still at FOTM and like in name only. I'm not sure he's a friend of the show anymore,
Starting point is 00:40:31 but that's the only guy. And oh, Mike Muzzin. Oh, really? Mike Muzzin's an anti-vaxxer. No, he was a big Trumper too. Yeah. And he has always leaned a little bit crazy. Did you see Trump got booed
Starting point is 00:40:42 for saying that he got the booster and encouraging everyone else to get it? That's the best. It's pretty funny. Like, how dare you buy into this science? You're our guy. And it's so funny
Starting point is 00:40:51 that the angle he's coming at it with is we should be getting credit for everything that's happening right now in a good way. It's pretty funny. It is interesting. Okay, we have a couple. I want to give you another gift.
Starting point is 00:41:02 You've been eyeing it and I think you're excited. I think you're excited about this. There's a Moneris branded Bluetooth speaker that's all yours buddy that's yours that's nice
Starting point is 00:41:11 thank you I thought it was a bar of soap at first no joke don't put that in the shower I'm not sure
Starting point is 00:41:16 it's waterproof but it's basically you're going to love this story there's a new podcast produced by Moneris and it's called
Starting point is 00:41:24 Yes We Are Open and it's hosted you want to know who hosts that show that's a new podcast produced by Mineris and it's called Yes, We Are Open. I see the poster. It's right there. You want to know who hosts that show? That's a great show and you need to subscribe right now. Do you know who hosts that show? You. I wish. I wish I could get a good gig like that. Anthony Richards. Anthony, Michael Anthony. Michael Anthony what? From Van Halen?
Starting point is 00:41:40 Yes. You're thinking of, I think you're thinking of Anthony Petrucci no here is the uh the blonde guy from much music what is his name steve anthony steve anthony that's because you don't have to talk anymore okay can i tell you i know you're doing it yeah i'll come back to it i'll come back to it one of the greatest things ever to come out of christmas time yep was is that technically post christmasmas? But when they threw the Christmas tree off of the MuchMusic roof,
Starting point is 00:42:09 that was must-see TV. That was Steve Anthony and then Rick the Temp would do it as well. Yes. And Rick the Temp made his Toronto Mike debut this past summer.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Oh, I saw. You would love that episode. He was on Breakfast Television with his wife. They're doing some sort of charity thing. What is he doing now? He's a morning show host on the station 103, Z103. Oh, doing some sort of charity thing. What is he doing now? He's a morning show host
Starting point is 00:42:25 on the station 103, Z103. Oh, gotcha. Good for him. I thought that was Mocha and Roz. No, no, no. That's Kiss 92.5. So that's a Rogers company. This is Evanoff Group.
Starting point is 00:42:36 But what's interesting is Wise Blot was here last week and he told me straight up, and I think you'll appreciate this, as a man of Italian descent, he says the Z103 demographic, it's as a man of Italian descent. He says the Z-103 demographic, it's important to be of Italian descent. And he says Rick is perfect.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Oh, like on air? Yeah. Like Rick Campanella. I played a lot of freestyle back in the day. Was it then? Yeah, it must have been. So do you listen to Z-103? No.
Starting point is 00:43:01 I listen to, I subscribe to Apple Music. And when I sit down in the morning after the kids have gone to school and my wife is off to work, I fire up the Apple Music. And I'm generally playing music that occurred between 1993 and 2001. Okay, I start in 2001. There's a lot of good music between. 91 is the best year in music. There's an episode about that as well. You got to queue that up. Uh,
Starting point is 00:43:29 okay. So let me tell you the FOTM who hosts the yes, we are open podcast. And by the way, Oh, it's an FOTM. Yeah. This is going to blow your mind.
Starting point is 00:43:36 When I tell you, it's going to blow your mind. I'm so excited. I'm going to get blown. In fact, I'll tease you a bit. I tell you this gentleman who I will name at the end travels the country, interviewing small Canadian businesses and then tells the story of their origins, struggles, and future outlook.
Starting point is 00:43:51 And Elvis, if you're a small business owner and you don't work for yourself, you work for a huge conglomerate. So this might not apply. But also, if you're an entrepreneur like myself, you'll find this podcast, Yes, We Are Open, both helpful and motivational. It is hosted by FOTM. I need a drumroll. Al Grego.
Starting point is 00:44:11 Really? Good for Al. Al Grego hosts this podcast. I thought Al had like a, I was going to say something that's not polite, but I love Al and I didn't mean it. I thought he had like a full time. I got to move this away from the Moneris thing. No, no, no. I thought he had like a full time I gotta move this away from the Moneris thing
Starting point is 00:44:26 no no no I thought he had like a full time gig yeah at Moneris oh now I understand yeah this is all part
Starting point is 00:44:33 of his full time gig I thought that he was being an entrepreneur I thought he quit the corporate life and became an entrepreneur himself no he's still a slave
Starting point is 00:44:39 to the grind but he loves it there and he does a great job and a couple of FOTMs you're familiar with have been guests on Yes We Are Open podcast. Stephanie Wilkinson, does that name resonate with you?
Starting point is 00:44:49 I remember seeing her. She's a guest. You can find an episode with her. People seem to have a little bit of a crush love affair with her. Because we're all human. How can we resist, please? All right. Keep your pants on.
Starting point is 00:45:02 Shout out to Stephanie Wilkinson. please keep your pants shout out to Stephanie Wilkinson by the way Stephanie Wilkinson Lieve Fumka and Moose Grumpy
Starting point is 00:45:09 have become very very very good friends and they were united by their love of this podcast I'm just saying and they
Starting point is 00:45:16 they listen does Stephanie I don't know if Stephanie does but Moose and Fumka listen to the Elvis episodes right
Starting point is 00:45:22 yes I think they all three and if Stephanie doesn't listen, I'm going to make sure she listens to hear all this. But there's a fourth member. I'm going to pay tribute now. And I'm not even going to drop a Ridley Funeral Home joke because I'm being very serious for a moment. But there is a fourth member of that crew
Starting point is 00:45:36 that became very tight over their love of Toronto Mike who passed away over the past year. I heard this. Did you ever meet Sheila? I did meet Sheila. Kenesha Witch. I can't, I remember the name.
Starting point is 00:45:49 If I saw a picture, I would recognize her. I'm going to show you a picture because she was at Palmer's Kitchen. But it was spoken of, she was spoken of very highly at the last FOTM, the dark episode. Right. Yeah, that's sad.
Starting point is 00:46:02 No, tragic. She had a heart attack and dropped she was uh otherwise seemed a seemingly healthy oh my goodness woman not much been some sort of no genetic thing that no well they said there's some blockage that they didn't uh pick up and they should have actually but that's a whole separate story but she uh she's not much older than you and i and it was very shocking to be quite that, you know, we lost an FOTM in 2021. So I just want to tip my coffee here. Thank you for the coffee, by the way.
Starting point is 00:46:31 And say much love to the... I didn't put anything in it. It's black. I like it black. Oh, you do? Okay. I was going to insert a joke there and I didn't tell. So yes, we are openpodcast.com.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Subscribe. You can hear Al's voice. But there's a guest coming in season two. I'm going to reveal it now, if I haven't already. This gentleman is a very important FOTM, much like Stephanie Wilkinson. you can hear Al's voice but there's a guest coming in season two I'm going to reveal it now if I haven't already this gentleman is a very important FOTM much like Stephanie
Starting point is 00:46:48 Wilkinson but this gentleman is named Ian Service does that name mean anything to you all? yeah that old school that goes way back we had an episode
Starting point is 00:46:55 us three together yeah we did we did we did wow I think we also called him I asked him if he was
Starting point is 00:47:03 Ian or Ian and I had some silly joke that never quite worked about how I am at your service or something. It never quite worked, but I was working on it. Him and Stokely
Starting point is 00:47:13 are sort of like the two guys that have helped you, like actually helped you with the podcast beyond listening. Yeah, well, one of them hosts the show, although I do pay his invoice every month. But Stokely never did send me an invoice. So, and he helped me buy these microphones in the very beginning. Although I do pay his invoice every month. But Stokely never did send me an invoice. He's a good dude.
Starting point is 00:47:25 And he helped me buy these microphones in the very beginning. I met Stokely too. Without you. In the truck, right? Without you, yeah. In the truck. He was doing curling in Oshawa down at the arena. You know, he's a good man.
Starting point is 00:47:37 He is a good dude. He's a good dude. And I'm not busting his balls anymore, but hey. I like it when we share with the OGs. Because a lot of people in 2021 discovered Toronto Mike, and I get these notes and like, oh, I just discovered in the summer.
Starting point is 00:47:49 I love it. I'm going to the back catalog or whatever. But when you talk about like the leave a funkers, the moose grumpies, the Stephanie Wilkinson's, the Ian services, the Al Grego's, uh,
Starting point is 00:47:58 who are we just talking about right now? Oh, uh, Stokely, Andrew Stokely. Like these, this is the early days, man. I remember the first episode that hit a thousand downloads.
Starting point is 00:48:08 It was like episode 69 or something like that. So that wasn't a coincidence. And the only other OG there that you haven't mentioned is Rosie. Rosie and Gray. I mention her at the end of every episode when I play Rosie and Gray. That's why we had Rosie and Gray was the theme song because she was Rosie and I was going gray. Gotcha, gotcha. That's why we had Rosie and Gray was the theme song because she was Rosie and I was going gray. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:48:25 Gotcha. And I did a few podcasts with the two of you at the very beginning. With the first 19 shows, we're at the Humble and Fred studio. That's right. Episode 20 was the first episode recorded in the TMDS studio,
Starting point is 00:48:38 even though it wasn't called that at the time because TMDS is only a few years old. Right. But yeah, that's the origin story. Crazy. I was on Humble and Fred this morning reminding them that the most successful spinoff of their show is this show.
Starting point is 00:48:49 And I said, we were the Mork and Mindy to their happy days. Yeah. Or the Jeffersons to... There's probably... The Jeffersons are from what? All in the family. All in the family.
Starting point is 00:49:00 Yeah, a lot of stuff came out of All in the Family. Yeah, that's right. All right, amazing. Are they proud of that? I think so. They should be. You know you know proud slash jealous is there a difference i was just thinking like how crazy is it that you know when we were listening to cf and y back in the day that oh i know you would grow up and become the producer of the fucking show that we loved yyz chimes in to say he was there at the beginning, but he couldn't attend all the TMLXs until recently because he was in Houston.
Starting point is 00:49:28 And that's a pretty damn good excuse. That's pretty far. That's a long way to bike. Does he work for NASA? Houston, we have a problem. I believe he's retired. I'm always thinking, how does this 35-year-old guy retire so young?
Starting point is 00:49:41 But yeah. And okay, now Moose Grumpy points out that yyz cord is now a solid member of the fotm community and the brother is pointing out that uh where where is this happening you guys met okay so who are these fucking people let me tell you this because you're not in the world here yeah mike okay okay when i Mike Mike encouraged me the other week to join Twitter because he said that there's some sort of, yeah, there's a,
Starting point is 00:50:08 there's a DM group, but that's not where this is happening. There is a DM group. And if you're on Twitter and you love Toronto, Mike DM me at Toronto, Mike, and ask me to add you to the DM drop into your DM. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:19 There's an FOTM DM group. That's really interesting. Convos throughout the day. It's not for the week of heart, but it's, you know, very interesting. Weisblot will say this, and then Cam Gordon will say that. And once in a while, the great
Starting point is 00:50:30 Stu Stone shows up, although it's been a while. YYZ is there. He's filming something somewhere. He's back now. He was in Winnipeg for a while to film something, a movie. Vandits, it's called. And then he went to Vegas to film something. And I think he's back now.
Starting point is 00:50:46 But yeah. Good deal. Yeah, you've got to be DM-worthy. Canada Kev is pointing out. He's in the DM thread as well. So where am I reading these comments right now? This is actually happening at live.torontomike.com. Oh, I've been on this before. The Pirate Stream and that's where they can hear us live. It's the only place you can, you know. And they can see me?
Starting point is 00:51:02 They can see you. Yeah, you want to give them the finger? No, I have to give them a thumbs up. Give them the finger. I'm a little bit more mellow this year. And then Canada Kev hooks us up with like pirated TV shows and movies. Like there's an FOTM thing for that too. It's all over the place, man. You know, we don't all want to subscribe to Apple TV like you, but that doesn't mean
Starting point is 00:51:21 we don't want to see. I don't subscribe to Apple TV. You don't? No. I'm shocked. You're like an Apple fanboy. I never... I don't subscribe to Apple TV. You don't? No. I'm shocked. You're like an Apple fanboy. I never subscribe... I'm an Apple fanboy.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Aren't you? No. I always thought you were. The only time I had it was for the... like that... when they gave it away for free for free.
Starting point is 00:51:34 So how do you watch that soccer thing? What's it called? The soccer show? The guy... the American guy? What am I doing? What's that show called?
Starting point is 00:51:41 Tim? No. Tim and Friends? The famous... No. The famous... Tim and Friends. The famous, no. The famous guy? Yeah, the big show.
Starting point is 00:51:48 The big, the wrestler? The guy, the American football coach is, they want their team to lose. It's sort of like a major league type thing and he... I have no idea what you're talking about. I have no idea what you're talking about. I subscribe to TSN and Sportsnet screaming. Ted Lasso
Starting point is 00:52:04 for fuck's sake. Oh, I don't watch Ted Lasso. I've never seen an episode of Ted. I'm shocked. I've heard. People say that I would love it. People say that I would love it, but I've not seen it.
Starting point is 00:52:12 Okay, well, Canada, if you join the DM group, Canada Cab will get you all the files. I'm not going back on Twitter. Okay, well, you don't have to. I'm not going to make you do it. Yeah, yeah. All right, so I want to get to these like...
Starting point is 00:52:25 Oh, yeah. Jesus. Okay, let's get going here. So basically, StickerU.com are with us all throughout 2021 and they're going to be with us
Starting point is 00:52:33 in 2022 and much love to them. Support StickerU.com. Wow. This is a sticker for you, buddy. Toronto Mike sticker. And since we're supporting Toronto Mike sponsors,
Starting point is 00:52:42 we have referenced them a few times, but in all sincerity the good people at Ridley Funeral Home really are just exceptional human beings and if you have any questions about that world you can reach out to
Starting point is 00:52:56 FOTM Brad Jones and the good people there go to RidleyFuneralHome.com Are they New Toronto peeps? Mimico peeps? Lakeshore and 14th man the heart of new toronto that's just down the street that's a big deal so and i have a i have a meeting like uh we're gonna chat me and brad next week so let let the ridley good work brad brad's a good good fotm it's not an easy business no it takes a certain temperament so yeah lucrative
Starting point is 00:53:21 business but it's not an easy business so okay where okay, where do I begin here? So I have a jam. Do you want to start or me? Maybe you go first. I'm going to play a jam. We're going to let it simmer a bit. This is a jam from a band that Elvis does not love like everybody else. And we're going to hear more from Elvis after we hear from my future FOTM, Ed. Some of these...
Starting point is 00:53:44 You can talk over the opening part here. I don't even know what song this is. Get the fuck out of here. I don't know what song... I don't believe you. Did I pick a song for this band? No, you said pick any song. You're right.
Starting point is 00:53:54 They all suck, you said. I actually... We'll talk more, but... I don't believe you when you say you don't know what song this is. I don't know what the song is. I don't believe you. I'll need you to take. I don't know what the song is. I don't believe you. I'll need you to take like a lie detector test. Let me get into it.
Starting point is 00:54:09 All right, now I know what it is. Is that how it starts? I need a moment. It happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time. I know. This is where I knew that it was going to get rough. Oh, don't ruin the sun. I see your rest of the sun. Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn.
Starting point is 00:54:56 Woo! Fucking great. Oh, and all I taught her was everything Oh, I know she gave me all That she It feels sacrilegious to fade it down even. Is this top five for you, band? Yeah, it's actually top two.
Starting point is 00:55:26 Top two. Really? Who's number one? Tragically Hip. But this is a strong two. No joke. That's why I'm so interested. The microphone is yours. I'm going to shut the fuck up for a bit and listen to you tell me why you think every song by this band,
Starting point is 00:55:42 Pearl Jam, sucks. I just don't like them. I really don't. I never have. So I think I've talked to you about before that in my older years, there was a few bands from our teenage years that I didn't appreciate. And then over time, they grew on me like Alice in Chains and Bush, Bush X. Yes. Do I think that they're the greatest bands ever?
Starting point is 00:56:02 No. Alice in Chains certainly is pretty fucking awesome. Bush I just grew to appreciate. I don't love them or anything. I'm interrupting to tell you that there is an FOTM in the live chat here on live.torontomike.com who agrees with you and cannot stand Pearl Jam. I'm shocked. I have to kick both of you out of the FOTM group.
Starting point is 00:56:19 Who is it? Who is it? Moose fucking Grumpy. Ah, Moose. I knew I loved you. All right. This is a band that still, after all these years, has not grown on me i don't like it i don't like the music i don't like how he sings i don't like how he growls i don't like how he makes you growl but
Starting point is 00:56:35 he has like different styles on different like he doesn't always sound i don't i i see no redeeming quality of the music whatsoever and the the reason why it grinds my gears so much is that when I am lucky enough to get free Sirius, I'm generally listening to Lithium, which is Channel 34, cheap plug, but it's, you know, grunge. Now, Pearl Jam has their own fucking station. Funny enough, I have another band here
Starting point is 00:57:03 that I've picked that also has their own station on Sirius. So I know it's unrealistic station. Funny enough, I have another brand here that I've picked that also has their own station on Sirius. I know it's unrealistic and completely ridiculous for me to say this, but they have their own fucking station. Can you just not have them on lithium? But of course, I will admit, if you're going to
Starting point is 00:57:18 create a Mount Rushmore of grunge music, Pearl Jam's going to be up there. Big time. Probably second right after Nirvana. Right. That would be an interesting conversation. What are the other two? Soundgarden. Do you have to put Mudhoney on there?
Starting point is 00:57:31 No, I'm going to put Soundgarden. I'll put Soundgarden on there. And I'm going to put Alice in Chains on there. That's my four. Not Rain Maida and... Shout out to FOTM Jeremy Taggart. Right. So anyway, I don't have much to say i just do not like these guys they're just not they're not fun or funny they're not fun or funny they're not it's almost to me because you're born in 76 it's almost fyi it's almost more shocking
Starting point is 00:58:00 to my ears now to hear you you and moose grumpy who i think maybe she's got a couple years on on you but uh to hear you say you think this band sucks it's to me the same as some guy coming up to me and saying the beatles suck i like that's how much i think this is a solid band like they write their own shit they you know this is this band has been together for decades they uh so like a catalog you could see them live 10 days in a row and they could have different unique song set lists and it would be a fantastic show for all 10 days if the depth of the catalog the styles like yeah this is one of their early hits this is off of 10 their debut album but you could pull something from uh you know uh yield or something from 98 There's a lot of great Pearl Jam. They're fantastic live.
Starting point is 00:58:46 They're socially conscious. Eddie Vedder, you might think his voice is not ideal to you, although I think he's got a great fucking voice. He's so involved and socially conscious and engaged in all these great causes. I just think this is a solid fucking band, and they produce great music. That's your opinion, and I have mine.
Starting point is 00:59:06 That's like your opinion, man, speaking of Big Fucking Lebowski. It's true. It's your opinion, man. No, I know. That's why I love this. Yeah, there's no right or wrong answer here, right? Except for me.
Starting point is 00:59:15 Yeah, you think they suck, and you've got some backup from Moose Grumpy. I can't explain it, but I just have this deep dislike for that band. I really don't like them. There's one other band on here that I dislike, and then I think there's three other bands that I just don't understand. I neither like them or dislike them.
Starting point is 00:59:37 So let me get my first jam going. We're going to take turns here. I don't get this band, and I hate this band. Pearl Jam, if you're following along at home, Pearl Jam is a song people generally like. Lots of people like myself and Bingo Bob. They actually love Pearl Jam.
Starting point is 00:59:49 Well, Bingo Bob actually has me beat. My brother Steve has me beat. They're my second favorite band of all time. They're my brother Steve's favorite band of all time,
Starting point is 00:59:59 and they're Bob Ouellette's favorite band of all time. There's a lot of people who will tell you Pearl Jam is their favorite band of all time. A lot of people. Quick tangent will tell you Pearl Jam is their favorite band of all time. A lot of people. Quick tangent.
Starting point is 01:00:06 I was going to ask you, does your brother still listen to every episode? Steve? Yeah, Steve. I'm going to see him this week. What's up, Steve? Shout out to Steve who's listening. Okay. So here is the first jam I'm going to kick out at the end of this episode.
Starting point is 01:00:32 I know, I already don't like you for the Pearl Jam stuff. And I don't like you for Jeezy Fist. And you want some more. Do you think you're going to find it? Think you're going to find it. You've got to treat yourself like a whole one. Do you need to be reminded? Need to be reminded
Starting point is 01:00:48 It's not a lot of what you do or say Just forget the things that you've been told We can't do it any other way Everybody's got to rock and roll Hey, sing it, Elvis! Shout it, shout it, shout it out loud. Okay, I think that's enough. So, I actually have a theory because I've spent a lot of time thinking about this.
Starting point is 01:01:16 I overthink everything and I think about it in both showers and on bike rides. I do a lot of thinking. And I think if you were like older than us, but if you were like 12, 13, or 14, like that age range, when these guys broke, this is Kiss, of course, I think you fell in love
Starting point is 01:01:33 with these guys and their makeup and this kind of showy thing they do. And I think it sticks with you because the songs you love is like a 14-year-old. They're with you
Starting point is 01:01:40 till the fucking day you die. It's true. Which is why Pearl Jam is surprising. So when I have a guy on this show, like who will I pick on? Barry Davis is a good example. So Barry Davis will come over
Starting point is 01:01:49 and kick out of the jams. He'll kick out a Kiss song and talk about how much he loves Kiss. And I can kind of see like 13-year-old Barry Davis like shouting out loud with the makeup on and shit. And I kind of get it.
Starting point is 01:02:01 But as a guy born in 74, and then I can't wait to hear what you think of this band, I don't get it at all. I don't get any of it. I don't understand this Kiss thing. Gene Simmons seems like such a jerk. Speaking of Ridley Funeral Home, there's a Kiss-branded casket if you're interested.
Starting point is 01:02:17 But I don't get Kiss and don't understand why so many dudes pray at the altar of Kiss, including Biff Naked's husband, Snake, who has Kiss tattoos all over his body. What say Elvis about this band I don't get, don't like?
Starting point is 01:02:36 Popular band known as Kiss. The Kiss Casket costs $3,000 US, just FYI, so it's reasonably priced based on how much caskets cost. I think you have to be in on the- It's made of cardboard. I think you have to be in on the, I don't want to say joke, because they play music.
Starting point is 01:02:53 Very shticky, though. Very shticky. Yeah. I think you have to be in on it. They're fun. I will agree with you in terms of their sort of window of appeal for the time that my son was five, this was his favorite band.
Starting point is 01:03:06 Loved it. I played the videos for him. Because they're cartoony. Correct. But I mean, like, that's a fun song. Is it the greatest song ever? Is it a song that I'm going to, you know, purposely put on?
Starting point is 01:03:16 No, but it's not a song I almost stuck Journey. I almost did a Journey song. Oh, really? Because... Journey, I would agree with you more with Journey than Kiss. I turned a bit, though.
Starting point is 01:03:24 I'll tell you, the Sopranos finale, and i won't spoil anything but the sopranos finale so you know the statute of limitation on spoilers in my mind is like 50 years or something yeah we had a conversation about yeah rosie used to spoil shit two days later she'd be like oh my god i can't believe this character just died and i'd be like rosie like i'm gonna probably see that in three or four months or maybe three or four years, but I definitely want to see it. And she's like, oh, it's like news. And I'm like, no, it's not like fucking news. Anyway, I don't spoil things if I can help it.
Starting point is 01:03:52 Although I think I spoiled this reboot of Sex and the City. I think I spoiled that recently on Toronto Mic. No one cares. I did do a spoiler alert. So here to say that, what the fuck was I talking about? Sopranos. Sopranos, yeah. The end of Sopranos,
Starting point is 01:04:07 I left that episode and it lingered with me, still lingers with me to be quite honest. I thought it was a great episode and I still, that song now when I hear it, Don't Stop Believing,
Starting point is 01:04:15 because now I think of the Sopranos, I don't hate it like I used to. Fair enough. So I didn't put Journey on this list because I find myself now listening to Don't Stop Believing or whatever and not hating it. Here's why I like Kiss. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:29 Tell me why you like Kiss. They put on a good show. I've seen them live once. It was a Broadway. Super fun show. But two, I love Paul Stanley's voice. I just think that, you know, he's also the Phantom. Like, I mean, how can he go wrong?
Starting point is 01:04:42 Yeah, speaking of Broadway, Stanley's actually not, I don't know, Gene Simmons is a guy I really despise, to be quite honest. But the songs are so sticky and goofy and silly, and unless you were there, I don't understand the appeal. I think, I mean, Detroit Rock City was a good movie, too. It was fun.
Starting point is 01:04:57 I mean, it's fun. Oh, Eddie Furlong, who wore the Public Enemy t-shirt in Terminator 2. That's right. So, okay, so I like this episode because so far, Pearl Jam, I love. You hate. that's kind of fun and now kiss you seem to love kiss what you seem to love kiss that's fine no shame in that i don't love kiss i'm not putting them on
Starting point is 01:05:13 melt marshmallow but i want to put them on my list all right you ready for another jam that yeah this is yours you're gonna recognize let's hear it god damn let's turn it off already let it brew a little bit here. You're going to like what I have to say about these guys. Okay, I'm ready, but hold on here. Talk about pretentious. Jesus Christ. Let's go out and I can be saved Tides that I tried to swim against
Starting point is 01:05:56 Put me down upon my knees Oh, I beg, I beg and plead Singing, come out of things of sin Shoot an apple off my head And a trouble that can't be named A tiger's waiting to be tamed Singing, you Okay, I think that's enough for you.
Starting point is 01:06:25 Horrible. Talk to me. So you may very well have this band on your list. I'm not sure because you've poked fun at me for liking them. But I got to give credit to Coldplay because they have found something that works similar to one of a band that I like to listen to, which is ACDC.
Starting point is 01:06:42 ACDC's, there is a common sort of criticism of ACDC post Back in Black, maybe, even before that, that all their songs sound the same. And I give them credit. They found something that works. I don't think all of their songs sound the same,
Starting point is 01:06:59 but they ran with it. Coldplay I also put in the same category. Quite literally almost every single one of their songs sounds the same to me. Like, I don't know what song this is. They sound all the same. Oh, really? The problem is,
Starting point is 01:07:12 is that ACDC's songs are good. Okay, so... Coldplay songs are not very good. I don't like them. I don't appreciate them. I think this is rush of blood to the head. I want to say this is the second... They also seem to be very pretentious to me like they yeah they seem like they are but that's
Starting point is 01:07:29 like you too is pretentious correct but you two actually has like a catalog well they have a okay so now i think coldplay uh the first two out this actually in the aforementioned secret fotm dm group this conversation came up that, when did Coldplay stop becoming a rock band? I think Cam Gordon was behind this discussion because I had, I owned, I used to own CDs, Elvis. This is how old I am. Do you still have them?
Starting point is 01:07:55 I think they're probably crated somewhere in this closet over here. I probably do have a bunch of them. I don't know if I have them all, but I probably saved some special ones, but the Pearl Jam, of course. But the first two Coldplay albums made their way to my collection. Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head, I want
Starting point is 01:08:12 to say. And this song, I believe, is on the second one, Rush of Blood to the Head. And I thought those first two Coldplay albums were really strong. I thoroughly enjoyed both albums and thought it was a cool band. And then they sort of went in a different direction. Like a band I'm going to play myself next. I got a band coming up next
Starting point is 01:08:28 that's kind of in that vibe of changing directions because you can't be a rock band and appear, I can't be a pure rock band and appear on the Billboard chart anymore. I don't know if you popped into the Billboard Hot 100 anytime recently, but it's dominated by R&B and pop.
Starting point is 01:08:43 Well, if you listen to Bob Lefsetz, what does he say? He would say that it's dominated by R&B and pop. Well, if you listen to Bob Lefsetz, what does he say? He would say that it's completely irrelevant. What matters most is the Spotify streaming lists. But the streaming contributes to the Billboard Hot 100. That's why Drake can have like the top nine of the top 10 spots. His argument is that no one's buying music.
Starting point is 01:09:01 So there's no point in the Billboard charts and they're manipulated as well. Yeah, it's still the measurement maybe of choice in terms of what's getting the most streams. And I think that this band altered their style
Starting point is 01:09:14 in order to suit the new format of popularity. But I don't mind this band at all. I don't listen to their stuff. Their new stuff I don't love, but I like their old stuff. I'm surprised you picked Clocks because you picked Clocks
Starting point is 01:09:24 because I still think that's when Coldplay was good, but I see exactly what you mean about the pretentious thing because I get that vibe from Bono and U2 and I feel like Coldplay is basically like U2 light. Light. Very light though. I mean, U2 actually has good songs from my perspective.
Starting point is 01:09:40 The reason why I chose, like, it was hard to pick songs of these five bands, honestly, because I don't like them. I don't know their music very well beyond, like, what I hear. So I don't know the names. So I had to do some Googling, especially for the final two. How many have I done? I can't remember.
Starting point is 01:09:55 You're on number two here. Yeah, for Pearl Jam, I was like, Jeremy is too obvious. But I don't know anything else by name. And then, yeah, like, I had to Google songs. So what did you listen to before SiriusXM existed? What radio station did you listen to? Q107. Okay.
Starting point is 01:10:13 And they were doing classic rock. It was all classic rock. Gotcha. So you were listening to Q10 Zeppelin and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Q10 Zeppelin. That's right. I could listen to Led Zeppelin all day.
Starting point is 01:10:24 Right. I could. Don't worry. They're not appearing on my list. Just could listen to Led Zeppelin all day. Right. I could. Don't worry. They're not appearing on my list. Just like, by the way, you mentioned ACDC because it would have been funny if I did that. Except I can't fake this. I owned Back in Black. Great album.
Starting point is 01:10:35 And in high school, I spun the shit out of Back in Black. Yeah. I loved it sincerely in high school. So who am I now in my mid to late 40s to suddenly say acdc sucks when i spun that album that i owned uh hundreds and hundreds of times you didn't make my list you would dare not tell acdc to get off get off your lawn right like you know what i don't love them like you do obviously that i don't uh they don't make my list here today i either hate them or love a band like it's there's no in between do you oh go ahead, go ahead, sorry. I do love ACDC.
Starting point is 01:11:06 YYZ Gord, by the way, who's on the live stream, the pirate live stream, just wants you to know that Coldplay is the best rock band ever. So it's interesting with music, of course. So subjective. There's nothing more subjective.
Starting point is 01:11:18 Are they even a rock band? Like, that was a rock? They were a rock band. Like, that jam is a rock song. Really? Yeah. Okay, what's rock? Like, this is a rock song really yeah okay what's rock like this is a great conversation like to me you've got a you've got a a collective of oh you gotta
Starting point is 01:11:30 obviously the lead singer but you have instruments at play you know drums and guitars and keyboardist maybe and you've got these what the hell is a rock band if it's not cold play and it just doesn't say it's maybe rock pop i'll give you? Well, here, save that combo. Here, my jam. In this band, I don't get that, isn't that vain?
Starting point is 01:11:49 And then we'll talk about whether this is a fucking rock band. But here's my second jam from an act. Is this a cello band as well? Of course, but here you go. Okay.
Starting point is 01:12:01 It's a rock band? We'll debate that at the, when I bring it down. First things first, I'ma say all the words inside my head I'm fired up and tired of the way that things have been Oh, ooh, the way that things have been Oh, ooh Second thing, second, don't you tell me what you think that I can be
Starting point is 01:12:25 I'm the one at the sail, I'm the master of my sea, oh The master of my sea, oh I was broken from a young age, taking my soul into the masses Writing my poems for the few that look at me, took to me, shook to me Feeling me singing from heartache, from the pain Taking my message from the veins, speaking my lesson from the brain, seeing the beauty through the... Do you know this song, Elvis? Yeah, I do.
Starting point is 01:13:04 Is this their first one? Big fucking do. Is this their first one? Big fucking hit. Is this their first one? I don't know. They have a number of big hits, of course. And they're a band I would consider to be like a rock band that figured out how to modify their format to still appeal and chart in the pop and R&B dominated Billboard Hot 100 we've been talking about.
Starting point is 01:13:21 I feel these guys, and I feel Coldplay's done that now too, but this is Imagine Dragons, and if this is sort of like what rock has become, and I don't get it. I could have picked on Maroon 5, but Maroon 5 to me is really just not even pretending to be a rock band anymore. No, not at all. But Imagine Dragons, I feel like this is rock now, and I guess my ears that came of age in the 80s and 90s just can't adapt.
Starting point is 01:13:48 I'm a big get off my lawn music guy. I like to pontificate that I don't really listen to music beyond 2000. But there are some exceptions, like Foo Fighters are a rock band. Audioslave, obviously, post 2000. Audioslave hasn't done anything in a very long time. Well, yeah. But I mean, they were post 2000, right? And then done anything in a very long time well yeah but I mean they were post 2000 right
Starting point is 01:14:05 and then you've got like Royal Blood who I like and I like Greta Greta Van Fleet oh that's like the Led Zeppelin
Starting point is 01:14:12 love Greta Van Fleet but beyond those four I find it I'm sure that there's others that I just don't know what about Arkells I have to say I like them
Starting point is 01:14:20 because they're Canadian right I have a controversial opinion that I'm afraid to put on the record. I wouldn't put them on, but I wouldn't turn them off either. Does that make sense? Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Yeah, so I wouldn't say that this is rock.
Starting point is 01:14:35 I would agree with you that these guys have gone the Maroon 5 way. I mean, they're certainly catchy songs. Like, my kids love them. Oh, no, my kids love them too. Yeah, well, my younger two kids. But Maroon 5, not that they had really much credibility to begin with, but they just went down this crazy... Yeah, well he learned that
Starting point is 01:14:50 he's just looking to cash checks. Totally. Good for him. Yeah, he needs to pay for all those tattoos. But these guys are a very... If you do ever listen, and I know you don't, but if you ever did say, I'm going to go listen to the top 40 right now, you might hear an Imagine Dragons song in there, and it will stick out as the closest thing
Starting point is 01:15:06 to rock. Gotcha. Alright, fair enough. Great band fleets? Not all the time. No, I don't believe so. And what about that new Kid Rock song with the Monster Truck? Is that going to make your list? And they're your favorite band, aren't they? From Hamilton? Who's more popular from Hamilton? The Arkells or Monster Truck?
Starting point is 01:15:22 Monster Truck is like the Nickelback of... By the way, I want to go to bat for Nickelback. They don't make my list either because that first album I spun a lot, unironically. Do you remember the song Old Enough? I actually, before, I think
Starting point is 01:15:38 it was How You Remind Me that made them kind of a punchline because How You Remind Me was so fucking big. But before that, I think that was just a cool kind of post-line because How You Remind Me was so fucking big. But before that, I think that was just a cool kind of post-grunge rock band. You talk about me having a bunch of American coworkers.
Starting point is 01:15:53 Yeah. They love Nickelback. Yeah. It's a creed. There is no, they did not jump the shark. No. Nickelback did not jump the shark
Starting point is 01:16:01 in the US. Now that we've gone some time without hearing How You Remind Me everywhere, go listen now. Go to your streaming service or YouTube or whatever and go listen to How You Remind Me by Nickelback. You know what? Not a bad tune.
Starting point is 01:16:13 Oh, boy. Can I just say that in 2021? Not a bad fucking tune. They're not bad enough. You know, I think you make a good point. It's not their fault that they got overexposed. Right. They're not the worst of the worst.
Starting point is 01:16:23 I get why people like them. Good Alberta worst of the worst. I get why people like them. Get Alberta boys. Come on. I get why people, and I mean, there was, you know, that marriage to Avril
Starting point is 01:16:30 was pretty, you know. They're divorced now though, right? Canadian power couple. Yeah, but they're done. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:16:35 they're done. Okay. I think they were married for six months. They're done, but I just want to point out, Rain Maida is still married to Chantel Kravachik.
Starting point is 01:16:41 surprising. They're going long on this, so congrats to them. Congrats to them. All right. So to summarize, I. Yeah. Surprising. They're going long on this. So congrats to them. Congrats to them. All right. So to summarize, I just kicked out Imagine Dragons. Doesn't she do something?
Starting point is 01:16:50 She does. She sings. I just put her. I just put it. So I book all the guests at Humble and Fred. Here's some inside baseball. I am responsible
Starting point is 01:17:00 for the Humble and Fred guest calendar and it includes two components. One is people who pay to be on the show and that happens at like 8.50am. Are you allowed to say that? I don't think it's a secret. And then I put someone on at 8.15 every day who did not
Starting point is 01:17:14 pay to be on. Like that's basically my rule that I do this for every single day except for today which is because of the special Zoom for people who paid money to be there. Okay. So all this is to say that I recently put Chantel Kravacek on Humble and Fred at 815 as a, as a, as an unpaid guest. She's actively like performing.
Starting point is 01:17:34 She was in like, I want to say Niagara Falls. No, where the fuck was she? She might've been in Burlington, maybe Burlington actually. Do they have a theater in Burlington? Yeah. I think she was. Yeah. So yeah, of course I should know this. I got cousins in Burlington. She's a member of. Do they have a theater in Burlington? Yeah, I think she was. Of course. Yeah. So yeah, of course.
Starting point is 01:17:46 I should know this. I got cousins in Burlington. She's a member of the Order of Canada. Good for her. Well, she had some big fucking hits. Yeah, and so is Rain Maida.
Starting point is 01:17:52 Michael, by the name. Yeah, right. He's a Michael. Yeah, he's a Michael. Rain is not his real name. No, it's not. Okay, so Imagine Dragons, just to summarize.
Starting point is 01:18:01 He's born in Weston, by the way. Well, I think he went to Our Lady of Peace, right? That was the school he went to. And therefore the name comes from that, if my origin story is correct. Really?
Starting point is 01:18:10 I believe so. I believe so. So, blah, blah, blah, blah. Imagine Dragons, big fucking band, lots of hits. Your kids love them. My little Jarvis knew every word to a couple of the big hits and loved it. And I think my nephewate was a big imagine
Starting point is 01:18:25 dragons fan i don't get it but i think i think this one put it in like it's not for me guy born in the 70s like it's just not for me and i don't get it but you have a band coming up i can't wait to play and talk about because you're gonna you're really gonna piss off i know i know because i've got two of the biggies here we go i got you almost have to talk up this one because there's a little bit of a... I don't even know what this is. You picked the jam. The only jam I picked for the record for you was the Pearl Jam song because you said pick any...
Starting point is 01:18:55 I know, but I don't know any of these songs. You just picked a name of a hit from this one? Yeah, I Googled it. I Googled, like, best song. Oh, and you went... Here we go. Oh, now I know who it is. Don't understand this guy at all.
Starting point is 01:19:08 Wow. I don't get it. To be discussed. He's the boss of what? But there's two him. Two him. There's really three him. I have a lot to say about this, but let's give him a moment and then we'll come back.
Starting point is 01:19:33 Actually, I'll come back. It's going to be a long fucking time. What do you think of, you know, when you hear Americans talk about the musical craft, right? They sort of have like three that I can think of right now, or that I thought of as I was doing this, there's like three big artists that they sort of elevate above anyone else.
Starting point is 01:19:53 Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen. Okay. And I, I, I thought putting Bob Dylan on there was not going to fly because he's a poet first, I think.
Starting point is 01:20:08 And the reason why I don't get Bob Dylan is because I don't get him as a singing artist. Kind of like Leonard Cohen. If you listen, right. If you, if you just like Leonard Cohen, if you were to read his lyrics, which I have, they're quite beautiful and moving. So I get him. I don't get the musical Bob Dylan, but I get Bob Dylan, this writer, and I get Billy Joel. I don't,
Starting point is 01:20:28 I don't, not, I'm not shitting on Bruce Springsteen, but I wouldn't, I don't, I don't, I don't get this. Okay,
Starting point is 01:20:34 I guess, okay. There's a lot of Americana in his music maybe that I'm missing. I don't know, but this whole like, you know, downtrodden or underdog kind of guy. It's blue collar music. Like Bob Seger, who we talked
Starting point is 01:20:47 about off the top. And Bon Jovi, but I get Bon Jovi. And John Cougar Mellencamp. Oh, Bon fucking Jovi. I fucked up. I never put Bon Jovi on my list. I don't know how, but anyway. Love Bon Jovi, but Bon Jovi's another band that kind of went right. Took that
Starting point is 01:21:03 right turn down the commercial success. So, I mentioned I didn't put ACDC on my list because I liked them when I was in high school. In grade school, I had Slippery When Wet and I enjoyed it.
Starting point is 01:21:13 It was the first tape I ever got for my fifth birthday. So, I feel like... All right, a great birthday in grade five. But does that disqualify? Because I liked a lot of shit and then grew up
Starting point is 01:21:20 and didn't like it anymore. Like, Bon Jovi, I think is awful. I think that's a terrible, terrible band. I don't know how I skipped them. Itvi, I think is awful. I think it's a terrible, terrible band. I don't know how I skipped him. It would be on your list then. I know, I guess.
Starting point is 01:21:29 You can like something and then not like something. I think the whole idea here is it's not that I don't like Bruce Springsteen. I wouldn't turn the radio dial necessarily, but I'm not putting this on. I don't even understand. Okay, so let me explain Bruce to you. He's got these operatic songs.
Starting point is 01:21:45 Yeah, well, you know why? That's like, who's the guy behind Bat Out of Hell? Meatloaf. Yeah, well, I know. But who's the guy behind the curtain who just recently passed away? Jim Steinman. I think it's Jim Steinman. I think that a lot of this stuff is like cut from that Bat Out of Hell cloth.
Starting point is 01:22:02 Okay. So here's my thought on this. I've had over 100 jam kicking sessions and a lot of times it's sports media personalities in their 50s. This is a common person who will come home and kick a jam. They all kick out Bruce Springsteen. And there's three Bruce Springsteens. Here are the three
Starting point is 01:22:16 Bruce Springsteens for you. There is the 70s Bruce. You're listening to 70s Bruce right now. If you were a fucking teenager in the 70s, which we were not, you fucking love Bruce Springsteen, because this shit just grabs you. I almost want to let him finish here. Hold on. So you like Bruce?
Starting point is 01:22:31 I have grown to love Bruce, yeah. So, there's 70s Bruce, which you're listening to now, and does remind me of Jim Steinman stuff, which is like over-the-top Broadway stuff, like Bad Out of Hell or whatever. But then there's our Bruce. This is the Bruce I consider our Bruce would be the born in the USA.
Starting point is 01:22:47 Born in the USA. Bruce. That's the first Bruce I knew. And a lot of big fucking hits dancing in the dark is way better than this. Yeah. And that's for, yeah. And I think that's an age thing,
Starting point is 01:22:55 but yeah, I agree with you. I, so there's, that's big hit guy, Bruce dancing in the dark went to number two on the billboard hot 100. Like now Bruce is a fucking hit maker. Although blinded by the light went to number one, but when the manfred man earth band or whatever fucking recorded it that's
Starting point is 01:23:09 a bruce springsteen song blinded by the light okay and uh what's her name patty smith had a hit with uh because the night belongs to us you know oh yeah that's also bruce strong okay so uh and what's the third bruce third post i feel like he went into this like folksy Bob Dylan type thing. He did, yes. Post Born in the USA, kind of shortly. The brilliant disguise in there after. And that's like Ghost of Tom Joad and all this. Like, so, or Dead Man Walking, right?
Starting point is 01:23:35 Like this kind of like folksy kind of thing. I will say he's fucking talented. I should put on my bucket list at some point to see him live before he dies. I won't deny that he's talented. And it's not for me to say that somebody should or shouldn't go to a show. And we talked about this. The whole thing here is I don't get it.
Starting point is 01:23:56 I don't get going to Broadway to watch Bruce sit down with his wife and play and talk for three hours. I just don't get that. I don't get that at all. There are people that I would pay to do that with, not him. Like Guns N' Roses. I'm not entirely sure that... You know, that was the record. I don't know if I
Starting point is 01:24:13 beat the record since. Probably not, actually. But that $150 for that Guns N' Roses ticket to see them with you is still the record, I think, for most money I've spent on a concert. That was fun. And we were right at the top, too. Yeah. So, okay. So, record, I think, for most money I've spent on a concert. That was fun. And we were right at the top too. Yeah. So, okay.
Starting point is 01:24:27 So I firstly, I think of a lot of people because I will say, I look at the numbers and I see in 2021, the listenership of this program really took off. Again, it was big before, but it's even bigger now. I think a lot of people are listening to their first Elvis episode. I really believe that there's a lot of people
Starting point is 01:24:43 who just discovered the show in 2021 who are now hearing this Elvis guy for the Elvis episode. I really believe that there's a lot of people who just discovered the show in 2021 who are now hearing this Elvis guy for the first time. I apologize. I think a lot of those people have shut it down already because you didn't recognize Black by Pearl Jam and then you didn't recognize... I don't even know the name of the song. What was the name of the song that I picked?
Starting point is 01:24:57 That's Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. That's from, I think, Born to Run, I think, but it's 70s Bruce, obviously. I thought that that was a cover of Garth Brooks. But then I did the dates and I realized that Thunder Rolls is the Garth Brooks song. I'm going to read the comment that came in. First of all, I'm going to tell you that YYZ Gord was being a little facetious when he said Coldplay was the best rock band in the world. Because of the conversation in the DM group I mentioned.
Starting point is 01:25:20 Canada Kev says, oh, come on, the boss? The fact he didn't know who this was or the Pearl Jam song says a lot. And then the emoji for tongue sticking out. His songs are musical paintings. At least I'm authentic. Yeah, he's being his true self and that's what I want.
Starting point is 01:25:37 He's a storyteller. How can you not get the stories slash songs? Yeah, I don't get it. I could go to a Springsteen show where he just talked. Watch Springsteen and Zvon's documentary, Keep Me In Your Dreams. So, okay.
Starting point is 01:25:51 I'm here to say, like yourself, I wasn't around for 70s Bruce. If I were 10 years older, and if you were 10 years older, I feel like you would be thinking of Bruce Springsteen the way you think of ACDC. That's my thought. So, you're a little young, young maybe for Born in the USA, Bruce, which was fucking a hit alongside Lionel Richie.
Starting point is 01:26:10 No, 84, 85. Okay, so 85, I think. But he was a long, there would be a Michael Jackson song, a fucking Madonna song, and then a Bruce Springsteen song. Like that was the mid 80s, okay? Big fucking deal. There'd be Phil Collins and then, you know, and Peter Gabriel's,
Starting point is 01:26:28 yeah. Sledgehammer. Right. Sledgehammer. Sure. Or Big Time and all this. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:33 So I get it completely because I've done all these jam kickings and had all these Steve Simmons type characters look me in the eyes and explain what Bruce means to them.
Starting point is 01:26:43 I kind of like Bruce now. But I understand where you're coming from. So finally, unlike Coldplay and Pearl Jam, I'll let you have Bruce. You can have Bruce. There's some credibility there that there isn't in my mind with Coldplay
Starting point is 01:27:00 and Pearl Jam. I found this exercise hard because actually there's very few musical acts i dislike like i find there's a lot i'm indifferent to but i kind of like if i hear it in the right i will say if you give me a free ticket to a show for a band i don't like i actually like the show like this has happened many times in my life where i don't care for this band i wouldn't pay a dollar for this ticket but you'll go but because i get a free ticket and then i bike to these fucking things right so i don't even have to pay parking or drive or gas or anything. You're a music fan.
Starting point is 01:27:25 And I, but I'm there and I'm like, Oh, I fuck. I mean, this, I loved passionately the kid rock concerts that I went to. But remember,
Starting point is 01:27:31 we're talking. Yeah. Nice. Remember, we're talking about, uh, I know. No bands that we don't get.
Starting point is 01:27:37 Right. We don't get, I also happen to dislike Pearl Jam and Coldplay. Right. Uh, but I don't, you don't get, I just don't get,
Starting point is 01:27:44 just like, I don't get kiss. Right. And they're both, but you just like them though. Yeah. I Right. But I don't dislike Bruce. I just don't get the... But you just like I don't get Kiss. Right. But you dislike them though. Yeah, I dislike Kiss. I don't... Yeah, I think there's no exception to that.
Starting point is 01:27:52 And Imagine Dragons, like do you dislike them or do you just not get them? I dislike Imagine Dragons. And this is another band and I'm playing this band because this band gets kind of brought up
Starting point is 01:28:02 with a lot of a scene known as emo. And a lot of times if you listen to like deep dives into emo, which I tried very hard to appreciate and understand, you'll hear things like, oh yeah, this kind of comes out of like the Weezer slash Green Day scene, which I was really into Weezer and Green Day. And they'll be like, oh yeah, Pinkerton by Weezer is like the first emo album. And then these bands spread up. So the next couple of bands I'm going to play
Starting point is 01:28:25 kind of come out of this emo scene. And I don't get the entire scene, like the whole scene I don't get. But this is a band that is pretty big, particularly in the States. And I'm going to play the jam and tell you I just don't understand what people are talking about. Here we go. I'm in the business of misery, let's take it from the top
Starting point is 01:28:53 She's got a body like an hourglass, it's ticking like a clock It's a matter of time before we all run out When I thought he was mine, she caught him by the mouth I waited a long run, she finally set him free I told him I couldn't lie, he was the only one for me Two weeks and we caught on fire I'm bringing it down because I really don't have the full file here. So I'm bringing it down. That's my bad actually.
Starting point is 01:29:21 Okay. So that's Paramore. Misery Business is the name of that song. Have you ever so that's paramore uh misery business is the name of that song have you ever heard that song before uh i've heard of the band okay paramore paramore is a popular band i think that because we talked the uh rock is kind of dead when it comes to like um the charts and stuff that the new rock is a bit like that imagine dragons and paramore is one of those bands that kind of broke through still. But this whole, I often hear them referred to as one of the key like emo bands
Starting point is 01:29:47 and this song is a great like punk pop classic and all my brain thinks of is like Offspring or early Green Day Offspring. You know, we'll put Weezer in there and those are bands I still actively will put on.
Starting point is 01:30:02 I'll stick on Offspring. Would you say Blink-182 maybe too? A little less because I was a bit older but Ispring. Would you say Blink-182 maybe too? A little less because I was a bit older, but I do will listen to a Blink-182. I even like that Boxcar Racer hit. Do you remember feeling this or whatever? Anyway, I like a lot of Blink-182, a lot more
Starting point is 01:30:15 than this Paramore band, and I've been trying to get it because it's got a woman lead singer, and I kind of dig that vibe. I'm big on pretenders lately, and I like that when a woman's in charge of it, they can start in front of a rock band. I dig that sound. Shout out to the Bangles. But Paramore doesn't
Starting point is 01:30:32 do it for me. I don't get it. Misery Business it sounds weak sauce to my ears. I don't know much about them. I'm googling them. They're very popular. So this is like popular bands you don't get. Do I get them? I don't know. I can understand I guess why they're big. They're very popular. So this is like popular bands. You don't get. Yeah. Do I get them? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:30:46 I can understand, I guess why they're popular, but again, it's not rock to me. Yeah. That's supposed to, that's it. I think there's a,
Starting point is 01:30:53 there's a guitar there and a drummer. Right. Then it's rock. That was rock. And that's, that's got the rest of rock. It's just soft. Like it,
Starting point is 01:31:00 to me, that sounds like Avril Lavigne to me. Yeah. Yeah. It's poppy. It's Avril Lavigne. I think Avril Lavigne rocks harder on some of her big hits. So your jam here is going to really piss off a lot of fucking people.
Starting point is 01:31:10 You've already kind of gone at Pearl Jam. You went at Bruce fucking Springsteen. Coldplay, most people will understand. This one. Legendary band right here. I'm going to start playing it. Then I'm going to use the John. And then we're going to come back and hear from you.
Starting point is 01:31:22 Here we go. These guys are so rock and roll. Is this who I think it is? Please could you stop the noise And try to get some rest From all the unborn chicken, my son's in my head. What's there? What's there When I am king
Starting point is 01:32:36 You will be fast against the wall You picked this song, you know. Yeah. Again, I figured this one was more popular than Creep. Is that one of their songs? Creep. Yeah, Creep's a big fuck. And you don't even like Creep?
Starting point is 01:32:55 No, I don't like any of theirs. That's the one that's most grungy. I don't like any of their stuff. So why though? Pearl Jam and Radiohead are the two bands from the 90s heyday of mine that I just never got. Let's get into it. Now, these guys are rock and roll in the sense that they got inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then just never bothered to show up. It's pretty awesome.
Starting point is 01:33:17 Tell us, how the fuck can you not like Radiohead? I don't get them. I really don't get them. I mean, I get the voice. I don't get the vibe. I just don't get them. I really don't get them. I mean, I don't get the voice. I don't get the vibe. I just don't get it. I don't know. This is not a criticism
Starting point is 01:33:33 of them in any way, but this doesn't seem like a grunge band in the moment where they were the most popular. Am I missing something? I'm not suggesting that they're good or bad because they are or are not grunge. the most popular. Am I missing something? Okay. So for my part, I'm not suggesting that they're good or bad because they're not,
Starting point is 01:33:48 they are or are not grunge. They're not a grunge band. Right. So what I'm saying is, well, I'm saying in the moment in which they were the most popular,
Starting point is 01:33:56 they were an outlier for me because I was so into that type of, you know, music. Although you didn't like Pearl Jam for some reason.
Starting point is 01:34:03 Correct. Correct. Pearl Jam aside. Wow. So then, like, these guys come along and although you didn't like Pearl Jam for some reason correct correct Pearl Jam aside wow so then like these guys come along and I just didn't I had no time for them I didn't get them and now after all these years listening to them I still won't get them okay I like this band a lot I paid I paid real money multiple times to see this band live so I'm a big fan but I wouldn't go if I think about their yeah that's I really wouldn't okay. If I think about their, yeah, that's, I really wouldn't. Okay. So if I think about this band, so Creep was kind of a bit of an outlier
Starting point is 01:34:27 in terms of like the sound of Creep, but Creep, fucking great song, but that's kind of your grungiest kind of song to be played alongside like Nirvana and Prodigy and whatever. But then they had that, that,
Starting point is 01:34:36 uh, the album with, um, uh, uh, uh, I should get, I feel like I should like these guys
Starting point is 01:34:44 because they seem angry. They seem counterculture. And they're talented fuckers. Tom York is amazing. They did different things than other people were doing at the time. I just don't get them. And that's why we're having a good time. I don't criticize people for liking them.
Starting point is 01:34:59 I would criticize you for liking Pearl Jam. So there's different degrees here. This song we're playing now, Paranoid Android, is fucking great. So this second album... What is happening right now? It's fucking cool. The second album had high and dry,
Starting point is 01:35:15 fake plastic trees. These were huge Much Music hits. Heavy, high rotation Much Music videos. You never dug listening to... No, no. Yeah, never, never, ever got these guys. Listen and tell me you don't get this at all. I don't get it. What are they doing right now?
Starting point is 01:35:36 I think it's fucking cool. That's why this episode's kind of fascinating because one man's trash is another man's treasure. It's true. We seem to be going down that route. I mean, Steve's probably bailed when you shit all over Pearl Jam and Radiohead, because I think that might be the two most popular bands in that household. I think so. Could be.
Starting point is 01:35:56 I bet you that might be true. I think Mrs. Steve is like a Radiohead diehard. I'm not trying to suggest that what I'm telling you is common. And you don't like, like you won't want to hear like Karma Police either or anything from OK Computer.
Starting point is 01:36:14 No, I picked these. This is OK Computer too. I thought that this was like their biggest hit. This is a big one. Yeah, that's why I picked it. This is a big one. They had, that guy said,
Starting point is 01:36:21 Pablo Honey has Creep, which was probably, I would guess probably their biggest hit, to be honest. And then the second album had the Benz I mentioned has those big, much music jams, like in CFNY, Edge 102 jams, like Fake Plastic Trees and High and Dry and Jest, and they were big songs.
Starting point is 01:36:40 Then OK Computer is often number one when somebody like, I don't know, Rolling Stone or somebody says, these are the top albums of the 90s. It's usually like OK Computer one and Nevermind two. Like that's typical chart by the critics. I don't remember them being number one. Yeah, like in terms of critics, I'm talking critics. Yeah, OK Computer is often number one on best albums of the 90s.
Starting point is 01:37:03 That's not my thing. I don't get it. I know. It's fucking cool. And this not my thing. I don't get it. I know. It's fucking cool. And this is definitely rock. And they do have a... I won't deny that they're rock. But they're...
Starting point is 01:37:11 Okay. They're not like in-your-face rock either. It's a little progressive, which is fine. It's like an electronic component. Yeah, which is fine. When I saw them at Molson Park, there was a lot of electronics, but it all kind of blended in brilliantly.
Starting point is 01:37:24 Like, unbelievable. Shout out to Tom York and his wonky eyes. You ever seen Tom York? He's got like lazy eye stuff going on. Oh, does he? Yeah, it's pretty cool. Yeah, I don't know what to say. I'm not passionate
Starting point is 01:37:39 about these guys like I am about Pearl Jam. It's hard to, you know, just sit here and say I dislike them. Breaking news. I just dislike them. The FOTM who agreed with you about Pearl Jam. It's hard to just sit here and say I dislike them. Breaking news. The FOTM who agreed with you that Pearl Jam sucks. Also, I think you should leave your wife for Moose Grumpy. I know Moose Grumpy is happily married. And I know you're happily married. But fuck that shit.
Starting point is 01:37:56 Be with the woman who also hates Radiohead and Pearl Jam. Moose here, I always liked him. But now I like him even more. So TMLX9, we're going to play matchmaker. Moose Grumpy and Elvis. Shout out to Mrs. Elvis and Mr. Moose here, I always liked him, but now I like him even more. So TMLX9, we're going to play matchmaker by Moose Grumpy and Elvis. Shout out to Mrs. Elvis and Mr. Moose Grumpy. I believe that Mr. Moose Grumpy is the grumpy part of Moose Grumpy, and I believe that's how they make us a shared nickname, I believe.
Starting point is 01:38:18 Okay, so where are we at in this thing? We just learned that Elvis hates or does not get Radiohead. Thank you. So again, back to emo for a a moment and then I'll leave emo for my final jam but this is a massive I would say the biggest I'm going to say this might be the biggest song biggest band of the whole emo era
Starting point is 01:38:36 was that genre genre and I got to say I never got the genre but particularly this particular this band because it was so fucking big and it was everywhere. And then at the end, I have a bonus to explain what I think might be the reason I don't like this song. But here is a big one.
Starting point is 01:38:53 Brace yourself. Are you going to get a hate mail for this? Do you know this song yet? No. I didn't know any of mine either. Okay, this was a huge song. I would never listen to this. Well, we'll give Muse a moment to uprise here, and then we'll talk. Paranoia is in bloom, the PR transmission is a will within
Starting point is 01:39:47 I'll try to push a drug to keep us all down, down, and older We will never see the truth around Another promise, another scene, another package light to keep us trapped in brittle I'm getting sleepy. There's a part of this song I'm going to have you listen to, then I'm going to bring this down and play something else. So do you kind of hear that sound in the background? It kind of sounds like radio. A little bit, yeah.
Starting point is 01:40:27 No, without a doubt, yeah. So this is Muse. Uprising. Big fucking jam. Like the top jam of the emo genre, in my humble opinion, in terms of popularity. And I'm going to play something that might explain why I despise this sound so much.
Starting point is 01:40:49 So I'll bring down Muse and put it really low in the mix and I'm going to play something. You ready for this? I'm ready. Oh, I know this. Sorry. Oh, I know this. They're apparently auditioning for the 14th person to play this character. Doctor Who.
Starting point is 01:41:18 Yeah. You should apply. So that song reminds you of Doctor Who? This theme song. So that theme song, I hear elements of it in Muse, and I'll bring up a bit of Muse here. Hold on, I'm playing DJ here. They will stop degrading us.
Starting point is 01:41:47 They will not control us. And we will be victorious. Yeah, I don't get this either. Big hit, big hit. I'm going to play the beginning again. So I'm going to bring it back. Listen to this part. I think it's like the Doctor Who part.
Starting point is 01:42:16 It's right here coming up. This part, hear it? Yes. Yeah, Doctor Who. So that means in the first 10 seconds of this song i get triggered okay do you know what post-traumatic stress uh yes yes disorder is yes so and this story is new to you because you don't listen to toronto mike but all the fotms heard this as recently as uh the retro ontario episode from two days ago. But I grew up watching a lot of TV Ontario, TVO.
Starting point is 01:42:46 And one of my shows was Polka Dot Door. So I would be there, and I think it would be something like 5.30 p.m. just before dinner, and I would watch Polka Dot Door, and I loved it. And then TVO would leave Polka Dot Door, so the credits would go,
Starting point is 01:43:00 and then they would go into Doctor Who with that theme song that I played. So it was this one. I remember it well. I have a story about this too. So this is the young Mike in front of the TV, I don't know, late 70s or whatever, and then I'm hearing this,
Starting point is 01:43:17 and it was the visuals of that tunnel thing, and this sound legit traumatized me, like scared the shit out of me. And it would be, I wouldn't see it coming because there's no, you know, Polka Dot Door ended and this started. And it would really fuck me up. It really fucked me up. And now anything that triggered, I haven't been able to watch one minute of any Doctor Who because of this. I've never seen any Doctor Who anything.
Starting point is 01:43:40 And that fucking Uprising song triggers these memories. What do you have to say about Doctor Who? I don't know how old I was, but I was probably similar age to you. And I had a babysitter. My parents were out. And we watched, she didn't make me watch it, but we watched Doctor Who and I peed the bed that night. I was
Starting point is 01:43:57 too old to pee the bed. You were traumatized. I was. And I have not seen any Doctor Who since I was... How many... Yeah, okay. So fuck it. I don't know if we've ever talked about this,
Starting point is 01:44:08 but that's wild because I feel like there might be more of us out there that like no one's talking about this. There's a huge Doctor Who cult. Well, yeah. It's like a huge following, right? To say that you don't like Doctor Who is a big deal. But how many Ontarians of our vintage
Starting point is 01:44:22 were fucked up by TVO throwing on that late 70s Doctor Who. I'm brought back to that. I don't remember anything other than those. You're right. That music, those visuals. If you and I have it, and I've heard from others who have it, YYZ thinks, ZGord thinks I need an online therapy sponsor to get beyond this Doctor Who thing. thinks I need an online therapy sponsor to get beyond this Doctor Who thing.
Starting point is 01:44:45 And Canada Kev just is shouting out the trippy theremin. That's the name of that instrument, I think, that makes that sound and the Doctor Who thing that we all hate. So I just wonder how many, I know Retro Ontario has the same experience, Ed Conroy, but there's probably a large group of guys born in the 70s,
Starting point is 01:45:02 or guys and gals, of course, born in the 70s who were fucked up by that opening. Yeah, it's weird. So I might see if we can start some kind of a special, like, Doctor Who fucked me up DM group. And then you'll have to get on Twitter for that. You've picked two of these emo songs now. Like, I'm not... Obviously, I don't like the emo
Starting point is 01:45:18 genre. I know, but I'm not even aware of them. Like, you're obviously much more tuned in. Maybe you unplugged from, like, the 102.1 oh yeah station before i did like because i'm thinking oh i know i wait 2000 early 2000s okay the aughts as i like to call them because i'm like mr burns like that's when this you know grunge is done and then the they went through the whole uh which i didn't mind as much as everyone else the whole uh limp biscuit what's that called new metal so that was kind of the thing kid rock new
Starting point is 01:45:44 metal and all that shit and then it was really a lot of that emo stuff like that uh anyway don't like that band although i will say another band like bon jovi that i actually despise and forgot to put on my list is good charlotte i really despise okay are you ready for your final jam from a band people generally like that you never heard this song before my life i have no idea what it's about to be just google bands you hate and they're both popular from a band people generally like that you do not get. Never heard this song before in my life. I have no idea what it's about to be played. You just Google bands you hate and they're both popular songs.
Starting point is 01:46:08 Correct. I don't, no, bands I don't get. Okay, sorry, bands you don't get. Okay, let's get into this so more people can hate you. Here we go. Then I have a band that's- You can't possibly defend this band.
Starting point is 01:46:20 Well, let's get into it. Trouble ahead, trouble behind. And you know that notion just crossed my mind. You don't get The Grateful Dead. I don't understand The Grateful Dead here. And this is similar to Bruce Springsteen. In the sense that, stand alone? Okay. I mean, it's not bad. But the whole, like, culture and obsession. Do you smoke weed?
Starting point is 01:47:10 Do you smoke weed? No. That's it right there. But I did. Like, at some point in time in my life. So even when you're smoking weed, you couldn't get into this? No, I don't understand jam bands, period. Like, the Allman Brothers, don't get them either.
Starting point is 01:47:25 But I picked the Grateful Dead just because they're more popular, I think. There's a lot of interesting synergies between my last jam and yours. People put them up on a, I think, higher than the Allman Brothers. At least the Allman Brothers, one of them, banged Cher. That's right. Greg Allman, I think. For like six months or something. You're right.
Starting point is 01:47:43 I will say the Allman Brothers also had hits. Like this band we're listening to now only had one. The Ice Cream. No. They have one hit and it came out in the mid 80s. Touch of Grey. So this is a fun fact about this band. They only have one top 40 song ever.
Starting point is 01:48:00 And it's Touch of Grey. But that alone isn't like crazy because Aerosmith, their only number one hit is that song from fucking Armageddon. Yes, but Aerosmith had lots of top 40 hits. Correct, yes. Like a lot of top 40 hits. Lots, lots, lots, lots. This band only has one top 40 hit called Touch of Grey,
Starting point is 01:48:17 which, of course, the video had the skeletons. It was a high rotation on much, and I guess for the Americans listening. That would have been hard in the days of Van Halen to come out like you know because that's they were always competing like there's no other
Starting point is 01:48:28 jam bands okay so yeah jam band let's get back to that because you know there's a bit of that in the Pearl Jam fandom right like where you just follow them on tour
Starting point is 01:48:35 like this is right so I think I think A you got to see Grateful Dead live I think to get it like this is a live band
Starting point is 01:48:41 that you would literally like drop everything and follow like this is what people did so if you're just listening to the radio you might hear Touch of Grey and say I don't get it. Like this is a live band that you would literally like drop everything and follow. Like this is what people did. So if you're just listening to the radio, you might hear Touch of Grey
Starting point is 01:48:48 and say I don't get it or I don't even know if they play this song on the fucking radio. I understand what you're saying but again, I don't get that. Okay.
Starting point is 01:48:53 You don't get it. So you need a bit of weed in you. You need to see them live and then you might get it. But if you're just like listening to studio versions of this, I think there's a lot
Starting point is 01:49:02 of people listening who simply don't ever come across The Grateful Dead and The Wild because there's no lot of people listening who simply don't ever come across the Grateful Dead in the wild because there's no hits. Right, yeah. Like, where would you come... They're not playing Casey Jones on CHFI.
Starting point is 01:49:12 Well, this is where, again, you have to be in the... There has to be some sort of community, I guess. Right? Like, I know people who love these guys. Deadheads. Yeah, they love them. It's a huge community.
Starting point is 01:49:21 Huge fucking community. I don't know how you get into that community. I don't know. You know who that community. I don't know. You know who else can't stand the Grateful Fucking Dead? Who? Moose Grumpy. Yeah. But again, this one makes the most sense of all your picks.
Starting point is 01:49:32 Well, maybe Coldplay makes a lot of sense too. But this one I get completely because this is a band that has, like, you have to, like, get deep into the album cuts and see it live and get into that whole vibe because you're not hearing, Q107 doesn't play grateful dead songs very often. Like they're just, they're just not a hit band. They're not that kind of a band. I don't get it.
Starting point is 01:49:50 So the fact that they're not a hit band, how do people like people, but that takes it off the radar of 95% of the people are devoted to these guys. I just find that very, I don't get it. That's a bit of a cult thing. Maybe like,
Starting point is 01:50:02 uh, where like you identify as a deadhead, so you're going to smoke your grass while following the dead on tour. This is a lifestyle. Yeah, it is a lifestyle. Sorry, you know what else? Okay, so older guys, not our age,
Starting point is 01:50:14 but the older crowd, they have the parrot head thing with, what's his fuck face? Cheeseburger in Paradise guy. Are we thinking about the same person? Yeah, Cheeseburger in Paradise. Margaritaville guy? Yeah, wasted away in Margaritaville.
Starting point is 01:50:26 Yeah, he has a huge following too, doesn't he? Yeah, so I don't get that at all. But I know it's Jimmy Buffett. Jimmy Buffett, yeah. That's another one where like... But at least he, again, to your point earlier, at least he has songs that you recognize and you can appreciate. You may not like them, but you can appreciate why his songs are hit,
Starting point is 01:50:41 even if you don't like them. So I'm going to go to YouTube just to see if you know this song, because if you talk to the average 40-something and say, name a Grateful Dead song, this is the only one they really have ever kind of come across. I'll play it for you right now. I don't even know. Like when I went to go look for
Starting point is 01:50:55 songs. I think I watched a lot more much music than you did. That's what I think. Dude, I watched a ton of it. How do you miss Touch of Grey? Again, they're irrelevant to me. I'm not going to remember it necessarily. I hear you. Let's see if this plays for me here. In fact, this is the actual video.
Starting point is 01:51:12 I know you can't see, but there's skeletons playing. Here, let's. This is your only Top 40 Jam by The Grateful Dead. In this one, you can see why this was a hit. It's got like a catchy little melody. Why did they do this? Did they need the money? Or like, wouldn't this be...
Starting point is 01:51:38 Jerry Garcia. You recognize this? This is how irrelevant the band is to me. I had no idea that this is the Grateful Dead. Of course I know this song. Everyone knows this song. I know, I know. That's why I was surprised that you didn't know what they had. But this is also, I wouldn't pick them.
Starting point is 01:52:03 Like, I get this. I get this. I get this. This is like Lynyrd Skynyrd and all that sort of, like, you know, vibe. Right?
Starting point is 01:52:12 Right. Is that sacrilegious to say? But again, like, when I think Grateful Dead, I'm thinking the exact opposite of this. You know,
Starting point is 01:52:17 like a 17-minute song for the sake of being 17 minutes. Fish, too. That's another good band. Because you can't name a fish song. No, that's another good one
Starting point is 01:52:24 I can put on there. Yeah, that's another band like the Grateful Dead that people follow. But I have a band. I think the modern version of the Grateful Dead is the band I'm about to kick out. So I think this is like a wonderful little segue. Oh boy. Completely coincidental, by the way. Are they an emo band?
Starting point is 01:52:36 No, I'm leaving emo because I'm going to leave that genre alone. I've devastated it enough. So let me bring down these skeletons. You know, rest in peace, Jerry Garcia. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. Let's play my final jam from a band people seem to love and dig that I don't get at all. And again, this might be because I haven't seen this band live,
Starting point is 01:52:55 and it might be exactly like The Grateful Dead. In fact, I think it is. But here it is. You cannot quit me so quickly. You cannot quit me so quickly There's no hope in you for me Devoted fans. Like the Grateful Dead. But he has hits.
Starting point is 01:53:17 Yes, he has hits. Like he had significant... I like that. I like that little melody thing there. Okay, dude, this was... I can understand how you may not get this. But this is like primo music you put on when you brought a girl home to try and make out with her.
Starting point is 01:53:52 Is it? Yeah. Women of our age. Of our vintage. That's the word I like to go to. Women of our vintage love Dave Matthews. Love him. I know. That Matthews. Love him. I know.
Starting point is 01:54:06 That's why I picked him. You can't pick a shitty band nobody likes and go, oh, I don't get Eve Six. You got to pick a big fucking act. I know, but I get this. I get this guy because it was a song where songs you put on get laid. Gotcha. I'm surprised you got laid before Mrs. Elvis. As far as I'm concerned, you got laid three
Starting point is 01:54:28 fucking times. Yeah, man. And she probably... Okay, I will admit, I understand why you wouldn't get this guy. I don't get him, but I do like his songs. Some of his songs, anyway. Some of them are... I think this guy... He can get into a Coldplay territory
Starting point is 01:54:44 where they sound kind of the same. He does that voice thing. I don't like... See, that's part of the songs anyway. Some of them are... I think this guy... He can get into a Coldplay territory where they sound kind of the same. He does that voice thing. I don't like... See, that's part of the problem here. I don't like his voice. So I don't like that kind of... You know, I sometimes...
Starting point is 01:54:51 My brother, Steve, the aforementioned brother, Steve, will tell me he hates Rush with great passion because he hates Geddy Lee's voice. That's kind of a deal breaker.
Starting point is 01:54:59 Like, if you hate this voice, this is not the band for you. Right. Yeah, okay, fine. But he does... Do you like the music behind... Do you like the Pearl Jam music? No. No. Okay, so it's more of like me and eddie better for you right yeah okay fine but he does the music behind do you like the pearl jam music no no okay so it's more than eddie's right you don't like stone goss or jeff a mentor i can understand why it's why it's popular um yeah he does he does a i just think he's a good singer um dave matthews he does a really good cover of Oh, what's
Starting point is 01:55:27 Ah, shit. It's a weird title. It's the Can you be more specific? Weird fucking title. It's a weird song, but it's super popular. I find this band boring. They don't do anything for me. All Along the Watchtower is the song you're thinking of.
Starting point is 01:55:45 No, I can totally appreciate you saying that it's boring. But you know what song I did in mind? The one I liked the most was, I think, Sarah McLachlan's on it, Don't Drink the Water. I think this is a band that was played on the stations I was listening to all the time, so I was exposed to a lot of Dave Matthews, and it was one of the rare bands or whatever I couldn't really stand. But I think he
Starting point is 01:56:08 has a song called Don't Drink the Water which has elements of that jam I liked. Like it's the only Dave Matthews song I actually could get into or whatever. He does a really good version of A Whiter Shade of Pale. Oh yeah. Is that Percy Sledge? Who's the original artist behind A Whiter Shade of Pale? I don't know. No. Percy Sledge
Starting point is 01:56:24 is the other one. It's a weird band, isn't it? Procol Harm. What's the old Percy Sledge song that I'm thinking of? I don't know. I'm going to look it up while you... You know what? I'll give you this.
Starting point is 01:56:38 This is a good pick. Thank you. Even though I get him... When a Man Loves a Woman is Percy Sledge. I'll give you this one. Thank you. I can see why you don't get him. When a man loves a woman is Percy Sledge. I'll give you this one. Thank you. I can see why you don't get it. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:56:50 And I think it's interesting that I picked a Dave Matthews jam to close with after you picked a Grateful Dead song. Because if you were to say to me, who is the modern Grateful Dead? I would say Dave Matthews band. From the sense of people following him around? From the sense of jam bands that travel and people follow with them. And I feel like, yeah, this is the heir apparent
Starting point is 01:57:09 is the Dave Matthews band. Who's the new... This is the other thing I don't get. Tell me. John Mayer has been the lead singer of Grateful Dead for a long time, right? I didn't even know that. Didn't know that.
Starting point is 01:57:20 Am I getting that right? I'm pretty sure that John Mayer... Wasn't he cancelled? Or did I dream that they cancelled John Mayer? Wasn't he cancelled or did I dream that they cancelled John Mayer? I don't think so. I feel like his girlfriend wrote a piece for some magazine about how what a shitty guy he is. I think he's got a lot of girlfriends.
Starting point is 01:57:32 Part of his problem. Maybe next Festivus we kick out our favourite songs by cancelled artists. I would totally do that. Yeah, he's got a dead in company obviously as a Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia and he's been touring with them since 2015.
Starting point is 01:57:50 There you go. Okay, do you think because we slayed some sacred cows here today, like if I look over the list, like I mean, I went at Kiss, I went at Dave Matthews Band, but you went at Pearl Jam, you went at Coldplay, you went at Bruce fucking Springsteen, Radiohead, Grateful Dead.
Starting point is 01:58:06 Between the Venn diagram, you've alienated 99.9% of the FNC. Listen, man, I come on here and I'm me. I'm not worried about the audience reaction. I can only understand, I can only appreciate how many protesters are outside of my house in North Oshawa right now.
Starting point is 01:58:21 Right, that's right. Shout out to DOFO. Okay, so thank you to everyone who joined us on the pirate stream. This is new. This live reaction is very challenging. Well, this is what Pandemic Fridays were. So Pandemic Fridays were,
Starting point is 01:58:36 most of the fun of Pandemic Fridays were all the FOTMs who would go to live.toronomic.com and in real time engage with us. That was the whole idea. And it's coming back, everybody. Do you want to hear that announcement since you're here and you can react to it i heard about it already but did you hear this can i play it yeah one minute here we go it's your show for 76 successive weeks a weary nation was entertained by pandemic friday episodes
Starting point is 01:59:01 of toronto mic'd a welcome distraction during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Then, on August 27th, in front of an adoring crowd of FOTMs on the patio of Great Lakes Brewery at TMLX8, it came to an abrupt end. It was over. Toronto Mic'd was exhausted and went camping. Cam Gordon retreated to the cozy bosom of MF and PPMM, and Stu Stone fled to Winnipeg to film a movie, A Nation Wept.
Starting point is 01:59:34 But do you believe in miracles? Pandemic Fridays with Toronto Mike, Cam Gordon, and Stu Stone will return in January 2022. That's right. The band is getting back together with more fun facts and mind blows. Only this time, they'll record on the third Thursday of every month, live at live.torontomite.com, and they'll have a new name. Pandemic Fridays are now toast.
Starting point is 02:00:00 Welcome back, boys. Did you get goosebumps? How'd you feel about that? I mean, I hope you gave Peter some extra dough there. There was a lot of acronyms. I slipped on my lasagna tonight. Okay, so I saw your eyes roll with the acronyms. I have realized what I enjoy doing is speaking the language of the show.
Starting point is 02:00:19 And then when outsiders like yourself, why the hell do I have you on the show? You're an outsider. But they're like, what do you mean? Retreated to the cozy bosom of MF? That I don't understand. I understood all the other ones, just not that one. Well, okay. Well, if anyone who listens to the show knows that Cam's girlfriend is,
Starting point is 02:00:36 we call her MF. She's a nationally famous person who we've given this initials to not like name her, although I'll tell you afterwards who it is. So MF, everyone knows MF and Cam Gordon live together. So he retreated to her and PPMM. We started a new series in the, out of the,
Starting point is 02:00:53 like a Phoenix rising from the ashes of pandemic Friday, brother Bill and Cam Gordon. And I started a progressive past of modern melodies where we do these very deep dives into different, like we did a deep dive into Canadian punk, we did a whole deep dive into why would CFNY play a jam or not, and we have an upcoming episode where it's a very deep
Starting point is 02:01:12 dive into Canadian New Wave, and that's where Cam's been heard since Pandemic Fridays ended, and yeah, so I speak the language as if everyone listening understands it, because if you don't get it, I think that's kind of cool, fine, and if you do get it because if you don't get it, I think that's kind of cool, fine. And if you do get it,
Starting point is 02:01:27 like you're in the fucking club inside baseball, you know what's going on and it's like an inclusivity. I think it's cool. So Elvis, I want to just say before we hear some lowest of the low here, fucking enjoyed another Festivus episode with you. You swore less than you usually do.
Starting point is 02:01:43 Yeah, I'm a little bit more mellow this year. Again, I don't want to overemphasize the fact, but it was a shitty year, so I'm just kind of... And your dog died. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. I don't think they bury dogs at Ridley Funeral Home. That's actually not
Starting point is 02:02:00 something they do, but when you die, they'll bury you. Hey, alright. I don't want to get buried. I want to be in the communal burn. I don't even want the ashes to come back to anyone. I want what happened. You remember Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under? Spoiler alert.
Starting point is 02:02:16 What they did with him. That's what you can do to me. Let me organically return to the earth and maybe a tree will grow. My oldest daughter has asked for a new dog and she would like to name it Dexter. Oh, after the character from Michael C... Something, rather.
Starting point is 02:02:32 That guy. He's good in Six Feet Under. Yeah, I never saw the show. I think I saw the first four episodes or something. I think Six Feet Under is my third favorite show of all time. So I should try and watch it again. Number three on my list and And I've watched a lot of stuff. Speaking of that, I'm three
Starting point is 02:02:47 episodes into a new series called The Landscapers, and it's fucking great. Did you ever see Catastrophe? Yeah, I loved it. I love that show. Sure. Irish chick, Horrigan, and the American... Yeah, very good show. I watched all of Catastrophe. Loved it. He's in
Starting point is 02:03:03 Home Sweet, Home Alone. I believe it. It's Home Alone 5. I'll take watched all of it. Loved it. He's in Home Sweet, Home Alone. I believe it. It's Home Alone 5. I'll take your word for it. Shout out to Macaulay Culkin. Kids love it. It's on Disney+. And shout out to Kieran Culkin.
Starting point is 02:03:13 And I want to say that the last season of Succession was excellent. And that season finale was stellar. It's been recommended to me. You should see that. But then see 6 Feet Under. It's fantastic. By the way, Sopranos is number two and The Wire is number one,
Starting point is 02:03:27 but Elvis in my books, you're number one. Thanks for coming over on Festivus. Love you, man. Happy Festivus. Happy Festivus, everybody. And that. So angry.
Starting point is 02:03:40 You're doing the whole Eddie Vedder. I ain't no loud daughter. Smoke head. Everything. That. That's such a Mike Maida thing to do too. He tried to do that a little bit in his poppy Our Lady Peace world. Yeah, you're right. He does try to do that.
Starting point is 02:04:04 And that. I like Our Lady Peace, at least the older stuff. I don't like Our Lady Peace. I saw them in college. I was backstage, like on the stage, watching Our Lady Peace. Okay. And I don't like this band yet. I had the best experience watching them that a fan of the band could ever.
Starting point is 02:04:22 I felt like an imposter. Okay. I like it, and they do this every time, I think, but I like it when they break into 4AM, which is one of my favorite R-Legged Peace songs, and then Rain just kind of puts the microphone out and lets the crowd sing it. But when you're in a sea of people singing the 4AM
Starting point is 02:04:35 by R-Legged Peace, it's fucking cool. It's good shit, Elvis. Not everything can be ACDC and Aerosmith. And that... Jesus. That brings us to the end of our... Do you remember what episode number this is? 973.
Starting point is 02:04:51 You got it, buddy. Get a tattoo. This is 973. And that brings us to the end of our 973rd show. You can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Elvis is not on Twitter. He quit Twitter.
