Starting point is 00:01:51 that I'm doing Brett the Hitman Hart? Yeah, no, totally. I was trying to cheering you on. Giving you the glasses. I got it the second time. Okay, good. Well, it's good to be back, guys. Another week. We're all alive still. That's great to know. Good to have you guys back.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Now, Stu, you're actually a little bit hot. Like, I don't mean you look hot. You do look hot, but you're just a titch hot. Oh, I can turn down a little bit. Just a little bit, yeah. That's the first time I've had to tell somebody they were too hot. How's that? Is that better?
Starting point is 00:02:20 That's better, yeah. Good. So tell us where you are, Stu. Like, where are you in the world i'm in los angeles california and um where i will be for the next week or so and uh a lot i'm noticing that the vaccine is here and uh people are getting it and uh wondering how it's going over there we're not getting getting it yet. But can you get it there? Like, is there anything you could do
Starting point is 00:02:46 to get a jab while you're there? I think I could, like, if I went, if I, like, gamed the system, I could do it. But, you know, I have moral and ethical reasons to not do that. But a lot of other people are, certainly have no issue doing that. Because we discussed early in this pandemic,
Starting point is 00:03:01 it's hard to believe that next week will be one full year since we started doing these. Unbelievable. We discussed that when the last of us three gets our final jab, Pandemic Fridays will be put to rest. Yeah, it'll just be renamed Fridays.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Wasn't that like an ABC show? Kramer was in it. Kramer was in it. And maybe... Oh God, who's the guy from There's Something About Mary? What's his name? Kramer was in it. Kramer was in it. That's right. Yeah. And maybe, um, uh, Oh God, who's the,
Starting point is 00:03:27 uh, who's the guy from there's something about Mary. Uh, what's his name? Uh, Chris Elliott, Ben Stiller, Ben Stiller. I think Ben Stiller might've been in Fridays as well.
Starting point is 00:03:35 You know what? It's also meant, sorry, I'm just trying to get a better lighting situation. You like it so far. Check the, Oh, are Fridays is also mentioned in the Black Flag Song TV party.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Which is not American hardcore. Oh, that is, I think. Yeah, I think it is. I mean, not to dwell, but Judge Famke, she knows that that music was, as we say in the old country, dreck. Okay. And by the way, we have a clarification. Thank you, VPSLs.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Ben Stiller was not in Fridays, but Larry David was in it. So Larry David, that must be where he met Michael Richards, who would later join him with Seinfeld. So, okay. And American hardcore.
Starting point is 00:04:15 I recorded for three hours with Mark Weisblot the other day. And somebody's like, this must be the longest episode ever. And I just want to clarify that we went almost three and a half hours doing the American Hardcore episode. So shout out to Brother Bill. Definitely shout out to him. He's the only thing that made that tolerable. Well received, that episode.
Starting point is 00:04:34 People who didn't think they gave a shit about American Hardcore wrote me to say that it was amazing. That was a critically acclaimed... A critical darling. Maybe not a commercial hit, but a critical darling. By the way, this is retroactive for the...
Starting point is 00:04:49 Disco. Yeah, I meant to bring this out. My daughter had a little disco ball available at Dollarama. I meant to bring it. You should get it signed by DJ Farsi. Yeah, Cam, you're like three weeks late or something with the Disco Ball.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Come on. So how are you doing, Cam? We just checked in with Stewie. He's in L.A. living the life. How the hell are you doing? I'm pretty good. Yeah, we had a big day. I was saying, Mike, you always get me when we have big news at Twitter.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Today we announced we're opening an engineering team. Wow. In Toronto. To drive the caboose in the Twitter Express. In some ways, yeah. Some people who know how to do some coding and programming and more technical stuff,
Starting point is 00:05:36 which is very exciting. Next time you pop by, whenever we can actually go back. That secret location. It might be twice as big. I don't know. Maybe twice as much people more uh folks with the the snack uh the snack pantry i don't know how they define village when you're over there i don't know how they define exciting at twitter but uh i don't know if that's that exciting uh it's exciting if you're an engineer in southern ontario i don't
Starting point is 00:06:02 know okay we're off to a great start the viewers listeners are just gonna love this episode there you go we have a special you fucking asked me how i was i'm just saying what i'm making conversation no it's a good how are you like not in a business way are you okay yes i'm great thank you are you eating well i mean we it's been a while since we've had a palma pasta, so how are you surviving? Oh, I actually have a falafel I'm going to eat. A palma falafel? No, this is, I don't know what it's called. It reminds me of a Bill O'Reilly type thing.
Starting point is 00:06:34 There's a goo head bit where he, instead of falafel, goo head things, they're saying feel awful. It's not a very funny bit, but I did hear it recently. I'm going to crack open a Great Lakes beer. Thank you, Great Lakes beer, for the fresh craft beer. I cannot wait until you guys are in my backyard and we can share one together. Here it is. Won't be long. I almost wondered.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Will you guys actually share a drink? Is that something you're comfortable doing post-pandemic? No, I'm giving him. He can have his own can. It's okay. Yeah. Two straws. Can Gordon. Can, I'm giving him, he can have his own can. It's okay. Yeah. Two straws. Can Gordon.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Can, because it's the beers in a can. Can con. That could be a, like beer songs could be like a theme, can con. And it's like Canadian beer references and songs. I want to say hello, because on this Zoom that we're on right now, there is a fourth party and she's a week early. She knew next week, which is March 11th, we're going to have an open Zoom
Starting point is 00:07:29 to celebrate one year of Pandemic Friday. So this is an opportunity for me to tell everybody listening, so both of you, that if you can DM me on Twitter, I'm at TorontoMike, or write me, Mike at TorontoMike.com. I will send you the Zoom link and you can, at the same time next week,
Starting point is 00:07:46 5 30 PM on March, March 11th, you can be on the zoom and we can interact and engage. And it would be great to have some FOTM. Apparently Matt Layton is going to be there. If Monica decides to put on the costume. I've seen the sports net footage. There is really a Matt Layden. So hello to Lieve Fumka. Hi, everyone.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And I'm here with my thumbs ready to judge. Intact. She's got both of them. We're all winners on Pandemic Friday. How's Juan doing? I saw him earlier. Is he doing well? Juan is doing fine.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Are you guys going to watch Coming to America tomorrow? Yes. Or today if you're listening to this on a Friday? I wonder if it's going to be good. I hope it is. Otherwise, there's a lot of disappointed people. I think usually like sequels that come out like 20 years later disappoint. I was gonna say, Stu, as someone who's in the biz, like what is your general i mean perhaps it sounds like you just gave it to us but what is your general opinion of this sort of gimmick you know well i think it's been much related sequels like i mean i think that they'll get like the nostalgia bump from guys uh guys and gals uh in our demographic that are going to want to check it out because we just have such fond memories.
Starting point is 00:09:06 But I don't know if it attracts new people. It's probably rare when something comes along that's like a reboot that starts again. Star Wars is probably the most successful that you can think of. But it had three under its belt. Is there any examples where the only sequel came that was good? Any examples of good movies where the only sequel came this, that was good? Like any good examples of good movies where the sequel, the only sequel came like over a decade after? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:30 I can't think of any actually. Um, not, not a single one, Mike. Yeah. I think they made a Gone with the Wind sequel. Did I dream? Maybe it was a book. I don't know if it would made it to the film. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Problematic. Yeah. That's for sure. Has an age. Speaking of problematic, Stu Stone. Yes. Michael Moniz. Why is that? Why is that speaking of problematic That's what comes next Michael Monez Wrote me to say
Starting point is 00:09:52 While Stu's pronunciation is accepted In North America More because Balkan people Get tired of correcting it Being that I am married To a woman of Croatian background, which Krist Novoselic is, if a name ends in IC,
Starting point is 00:10:11 the correct pronunciation is ch, not ik, because I believe, Stu, you said Krist Novoselic. It should be Krist Novoselic. Yes, of course. I said ch, actually. I did the Jewish pronunciation. Chris Novoselich. By the way, Mike,
Starting point is 00:10:29 I know we did a couple of fact checks on the latest 1236 Marathon episode. I'm curious, Stu's take on this, the nurses episode with the goyim leg. How would you say that, Stu? Goyim. I think you just did.
Starting point is 00:10:47 You just did. Okay, because isn't that what Mark said? I feel like there was some correction. Well, I don't know if I have it. I don't know what to say, but I do know that the goyim, I believe, is non-Jewish person. Am I right?
Starting point is 00:11:00 Or am I completely missing what goyim is? What is goyim? Is that a non-Jewish person? I mean, as the token Jew in here that's like required to answer on behalf of all Jews, I guess. Authority. You're sort of putting me
Starting point is 00:11:12 in an uncomfortable problematic spot here. No, I think it just means it's literally described somebody that's not Jewish. Okay, so goyim leg just means this leg did not belong to a Jewish person. It belonged to someone. That's a non-Jewish leg.
Starting point is 00:11:27 So like Gentile would be a word, right? Yeah, so Gentile would. Gentile's more specific, isn't it? Is it? Tell me. I think it's, I'm pretty sure that like one is like a Yiddish word and one is an English word, but they're probably both the same kind of thing. Okay, speaking of Yiddish words and other languages, do either of you, and Levi, you can step in too,
Starting point is 00:11:48 but Stu, Cam, first with you guys, do you speak another language besides English? I speak Carni. I was a Carni. I was a Carni. Yeah, we know. And Joey Jeremiah showed up, and you gave him a free spin.
Starting point is 00:12:03 That was the time when you thought you went to a Rolling Stones concert. I was going to say, let's, let's, let's do that. I was a little upset last week. Let me just get this off my chest because I was telling a story. I was hoping you'd get that shirt off your chest. I'd love to see what's under there. I was telling a story about working at the 1989, working at the CNE, which of course is 20 days. The last day being the day before Labor Day.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Oh, being Labor Day. Labor Day was the last day. So I'm at the CNE, and I remember distinctly having someone cover my shift because I was going to go to the grandstand. And where I could listen, I couldn't see anything, by the way, but I could hear the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels Tour. And I remember listening to it. And then I'm telling the story, and you literally basically said it was skydome like because it was it was at skydome but we've established that both of us are correct because they played both the grandstand and the skydome on that tour yes there was a skydome on that tour in december i think but but that but the whole notion that like somehow i invented this like how could i not know where i was i mean how could i
Starting point is 00:13:05 not know where i was i felt put yourself in my shoes man this is why there's a divide in this country so shouldn't you come together we need to come together and put ourselves in each other's shoes i can put myself in your i would imagine in 89 probably size eight and a half shoes with those goyim legs of yours and i would definitely imagine that yes you did have someone cover your shift and go see the stones but if you put yourself in my non-goyim legs in my shoes you would know that i went to the sky dome and saw that show so how could i know that you know we both were right your response should have been oh i guess there were two no wait wait wait i you know what i okay last time i was at the cne And I don't know like this was a long time ago
Starting point is 00:13:46 I certainly wasn't there But last time I went to the C&E I heard A very faithful rendition Of Detroit Rock City Okay Just let's go with this for a second And I look around and there's a band
Starting point is 00:14:02 All dressed up like Kiss And I'm like a really authentic Kiss cover band was playing at the C&E. This was like two years ago in the beer garden. Now Mike, let's go back to years. It was a long time ago. Was it maybe a Rolling Stones cover band?
Starting point is 00:14:19 Were they playing in a beer garden or was this like the full C&E? Considering those guys who came in to play the game were in their Rolling Stones. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Cam, I think I know what it is that your memory is of. Because I was with you at the C&E probably on one of your last times there. And I remember seeing four guys in Kiss makeup called Kidio play at the band show.
Starting point is 00:14:42 Kidio, sure. Kidio played at the band show. Wow. Kidio played at the band show. Wow. You guys know Kidio? No. You don't know Kidio? Wow. They're like the Wiggles, but Kiss.
Starting point is 00:14:55 It's like Retro Ontario knows what they are. Yeah. Like green wigs and stuff. Well, I got some catching up to do here. I do want to shout out some people. We're live at live.torontomic.com Pandemic Friday fans should know that when we do this
Starting point is 00:15:10 it's always at live.torontomic.com I just want to shout out Canada Kev because he says he had my back with the, I guess it was September, but the September Steel Wheels Tour at the CND in 1989. Thank you, Canada Kev. He says the Skydome was the sequel,
Starting point is 00:15:26 so the actual original Steel Wheels performance was at the C&E. That was one reference right there where the sequel was better than the original. I wouldn't know. I don't know. Now, I want to just say hello to Cam Brio, because he says he's calling out Cam
Starting point is 00:15:42 Gordon for those sideburns. Do you got sideburns? Yeah, he stole my avatar, like an old avatar photo. I'm curious where he got that. That's a little creepy, right? Okay. Tone it down, Cam. Yeah. Cam Brio, I mean.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Supple in the face. And a couple of people enjoying the Kidio reference. T.O. Residence seems to remember Kids Can Rock and Roll. Yes. And yeah, he says that their tagline was yeah kids can rock and roll so thank you for that that technically is true the kids can rock and roll so yeah of course of course okay so uh yeah none of us speak any other languages to finish up that thought there so we're all i do speak the language of love uh and sometimes i can communicate
Starting point is 00:16:23 with leave a fanca without even saying anything. We have that language as well. Lieve, do you speak Dutch? I'm Béthia. Oh, wow. See, that's quite sexy. Lieve Femke itself is Dutch. And a little Spanish.
Starting point is 00:16:36 Oh, poquito más? Yeah. No, matokas. Oh. Okay, right. This is too much. Now, Cam. which means don't uh when you name this episode uh you called it uh watch your language 12 language 12 multilingual jams but i just want to clarify something because multilingual yeah jams with a z multilingual suggests two or more languages. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Or songs that were recorded in two languages. But is that really, because I need to clarify this. I thought it was just songs that included a language other than English. Yes, and that is accurate, and that's a good clarification. Well, then I guess I'm screwed. I guess I'm screwed, guys. Well, no, because if you're jammed. Here goes Mike trying to... He accepts my entry and doesn't
Starting point is 00:17:28 qualify it when I send it to him. But then he waits for me to be on the show. And I'm sure that the song that he's talking about was one that was on his list prior to me taking it as well, which we'll come to that conclusion later. As long as I can hear, I'm of the belief that we just need to kick out
Starting point is 00:17:44 jams that include some language other than English. It could be all in another language, but I'm just clarifying that the title that... No, because we've already done an episode on non-English jams. I don't think so. No. We didn't? No, no. Only in your dreams. We never did? Only in my dreams.
Starting point is 00:18:00 As Debbie Gibson once said, yes. We have not done this yet. The jam you're speaking of, which I actually did have, if that's the way I'm thinking of it. Of course you did, because why else would you be putting me on blast if you didn't pick it yourself? Typical Mike. I'm going to take the L on this one, because Mike's right.
Starting point is 00:18:17 I mean, multilingual is not accurate. Some of these may be multilingual, but these are songs that have some element, either in their entirety or partial, that is not English. Well, there's a good point. Hard stop. Yeah, it's just foreign language jams. Sure.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Okay. Yeah. Oh, what we did was international jams. So thank you, VP of Sales. I don't know what we do about you, but Pandemic Friday, number five. This is number 51. But number five, we did international jams pet so thank you vps sales i don't know what we do about you but pandemic friday number five this is number 51 but number five we did international jams but it wasn't foreign language it was just non i think we just said nothing jams that weren't american or canadian or i think we said no uk either yeah like we had like all right well either way whether my jam is
Starting point is 00:19:02 controversial or not it's gonna blow your mind today because I have a massive mind blow with that jam in question. I can't wait because I gave you that. I had it on my list because I always get mine in first, and I handed it over to you because I like you that much. And just because I like you that much, you're also going to close the show again. Last week, I said you could close the show, and you had this, like, spocky eyebrow like something was coming. Nothing came. Like a big mind fuck. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:27 And nothing's going to come today. I'm okay. I'm okay closing the show. I think you want to have the best person close the show anyway. So that works out well. Yeah. So you can win.
Starting point is 00:19:34 You can win the podcast. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. That's why you do this. Terminator. So much winning. All we do is win.
Starting point is 00:19:41 So before... That's a good jam. Before we kick out the first jam, which will belong to, of course, Cam Gordon, I have a curiosity question, particularly for you, Stu Stone. Are you bilingually curious?
Starting point is 00:19:54 You know, my kids, I have four kids, three of whom, well, two are officially bilingual, like they're fluent in French. One of them is he spent all year in French immersion and he's getting there. I don't know if you can do a long conversation, but he's getting there. And then eventually the youngest will catch up because
Starting point is 00:20:09 they don't have French immersion until SK and she's only in JK. So I'm surrounded by multilingual people. I just don't speak any. I barely can speak English. I can barely handle that one language. My question for you, Stu Stone, is were you or are you
Starting point is 00:20:25 familiar with the band Godo? No. Cam, I'm going to ask you the same question. What's your level of familiarity with the band Godo? For me, they're
Starting point is 00:20:43 an artist or an act that I'm very familiar with who they are, but gun to my head, I would not be able to name a Godot song. I do know Godot was the type of band that would play the Nags Head North in Markham and gigged a lot in Southern Ontario. Like an April Wine kind of thing?
Starting point is 00:21:07 April Wine plays like strip clubs. Yeah, like that kind of thing, right? Yeah, I'm thinking they were the... Gato would open for when Foreigner would come to town, open for a lot of bands, I'm sure, back in the day. What is the reason for this question? Are they with you right now? No, earlier this week,
Starting point is 00:21:24 I spoke to the founder and lead singer and bassist for Godot, Greg. Is he from Thornhill? He is from Scarborough, not Thornhill. Okay, so why did... Greg Godovitz. No, the reason I brought it up is because I've noticed that if you're,
Starting point is 00:21:37 basically, if you're under 50, Godot is an unknown entity. You might have heard that Godot exists, but you don't know much more beyond that. But I've noticed that if you are of a certain age, I'm going to say 55 plus, you got Godot right there with Max Webster and April Wine. Yeah, sounds like something I'd be into if those are the comps.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Yeah. Anyway, so I knew you guys being a little younger than me, I would have been shocked if you guys were more familiar with god and what is you mike what is your relationship with god oh well now i'm an expert but prior to my uh episode with greg god of it's uh i didn't know much beyond the fact that uh i remember like the lampton house which which is this like little tiny like venue in the, in the Valley where I lived for a little while. I remember Gato was coming to play there and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:22:30 Oh wow. Like a band is coming to this little Lampton house. So it's like, I kind of knew they were this like band, but I didn't know shit more. Like I didn't know, but anyway, check it out.
Starting point is 00:22:39 I feel like Gato would be to us is probably like a band like moist would be to a 20 yearyear-old. Do you think 20-year-olds have any? No, because Moist has like bonafide radio hits. Gato was a big fucking deal. I know, but I can't think of their hits is my point. You were in diapers. Is that why?
Starting point is 00:23:01 If you go back further, yeah, they were definitely a 70s band. But if you go back further, Gato. What was their hits band. But if you go back further, God of It. What was their hit? What was their hit? Sing it to us. The Little Boy one. There's like a four-year-old boy in the hit. Oh, Cam likes Little Boy one, so maybe he'll like it.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Can you play it for us? Stop it. I'm going to tell you. The name of that song is Pretty Bad Boy. Here, I'll play a bit of it here real quick. So here's a bit of it. How you good looking in the very front row. You're the kind of sweet thing that I'd like to know. Maybe we could make eyes after the show. You can have it fast or you can have it slow.
Starting point is 00:23:59 I'll bring it down, but you're right. It might be early 80s. It might be like 1981 or something like that. Sounds like the Jay Giles thing. Yes, it does. He says he stole this sound he said from Werewolves of London.
Starting point is 00:24:13 That sounds like Werewolves of London. So this is Pretty Bad Boy, and at some point in that song, there's like a four-year-old who's got a part in that. So that's actually that actually is the perfect spot to stop and play the first jam by Cam Gordon. So that's actually that actually is the perfect spot to stop and play the first jam by Cam Gordon. So Cam, are you ready for your
Starting point is 00:24:29 first foreign language jam? Wait, is this the return of the guy? Is this the return of the king? The Jojo is her baby. Wow. The second time we've got to hear this classic. No, no, no. Stop the music.
Starting point is 00:24:46 That was a joke. That was... I was getting ready for Jordi. I am five. I am small. We should have made one with like a record scratch. I thought about it. Honest to God, I thought I need a record scratch and I kill that song.
Starting point is 00:24:57 I thought we were going to get Jordi again. Yeah. So that was, you know... It's so tough to be a baby. Yeah, so he's of of course, from Thailand. No, he's French little Jordy. Yeah, we've heard Jordy before. I don't think we need to dust him off again,
Starting point is 00:25:14 you know, maybe in year two of Pandemic Fridays. Maybe a whole Jordy episode. Why don't you track down Jordy? He's probably like 38 now. That could be like a Netflix show. That could be your next documentary. Searching for Jordy. I'm down Jordy? He's probably like 38 now. That could be like a Netflix show. That could be your next documentary. Searching for Jordy. I'm finding Jordy.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Jordy of all trades. It's like searching for Sugarman, searching for Jordy. Yeah, Uwe Jordy. But that would have been an appropriate jam for today. But I did notice I avoid songs that we've kicked out on previous pandemic. I try to avoid, but it's hard to remember. Because there was one, one jam I was really wanting to kick out.
Starting point is 00:25:49 And then I remember, Oh, we kind of recently kicked it out on pandemic Fridays and I, I kind of handset it, but we are going to kick out the real first jam by cam Gordon, but I'm going to take a moment to say a shout out to Barb Paluskiewicz and to encourage anybody listening who is considering outsourcing their IT. I am.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Well, then you need to talk to Barb. So Barb at CDNTechnologies.com. Is that 905-542-9759 number still working? Still working. Yeah, give me a call. She'll take your call for sure. And sticker you. This is interesting because tomorrow, which is Friday,
Starting point is 00:26:25 I have a gentleman on the program named Barry Witkin. Is he a gentleman? He's a gentleman and a scholar, and he's the founder of the Purple Onion. Do either of you guys know what the Purple Onion is? Is that a drug? Is that a greasy spoon? It sounds like there is. You know, in the junction, there's a place called,
Starting point is 00:26:45 is it a watering hole? There might be a greasy spoon called the purple onion in the junction. Cause I think I've had brunch there, but this is the, this is a club where like the, like, like Neil Young would have played in the, Oh wow.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Actually, now that you mentioned it. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Like a Yorkville venue. Sure. Sure. Sure. Yeah. Dylan might've played this on his way through town in the late sixties or something. No, I think that, uh, I I think that now it does sound very familiar.
Starting point is 00:27:08 So he's the founder, but get this. You know what he does today? He drives. I feel like Otto. Now I drive the school bus. Barry Witkin now drives the... Drives the school bus? No, the Sticker U mobile.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Wow, how did that happen? Barry Witkin's son is FOTM Andrew Witkin, founder of StickerU. Wow, so you're getting the StickerU's dad on the show. Yes, absolutely. I'm having the StickerU dad on the show. This is like a 1236 revelation, right? He saw a Toronto Star article about how Barry Witkin wants a museum to the music scene in Yorkville in the late 60s, early 70s. Oh, yeah, yeah. By the way, those three old guys around the plaque, I saw that photo. I'm like, that's totally like you, me, and Stu in 35 years.
Starting point is 00:28:01 I almost did like a parody photo, but I was kind of busy at work this week. It's just like I had sort of a moment of reckoning. You got to make time for that shit. I think that's an amazing story. Mark Weisblatt reads this article, thinks... He knows everything, Mark Weisblatt. He's the real... Barry Wicken's 82 years old
Starting point is 00:28:19 and I'm emailing him. And then I mentioned that his son... Wait, at 82, he's driving the StickerU mobile? Correct. I know. So tomorrow, listen in. It's going to be a lot of fun. Shout out to StickerU.
Starting point is 00:28:32 And obviously, you can order your stickers at StickerU.com. Maybe Barry will drive the delivery to you in the StickerU mobile. That would be cool. But it's just, he said, like, how did you connect the dots? Like, Barry was really, like, impressed that I was that I figured out Andrew was his son and all this. And I'm like, I have a secret weapon. It's Mark Weisblatt. Weisblatt.
Starting point is 00:28:51 That Weisblatt episode brought to you by Ridley Funeral Home. Yeah, always. He was wearing the Ridley Funeral Home toque. As he should. He's the Grim Reaper. He's the Grim Reaper. So, palm of pasta is something you guys have earned. So, I can't wait to give you a lasagna in the backyard here.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Thank God. We've shouted out Great Lakes. We've shouted out StickerU. Barb Paluskiewicz at cdntechnologies.com. I want to thank Mimico Mike. Oh, yeah, that fucking guy. Mike Majeski is his name. He's ripping up the Mimico real estate scene.
Starting point is 00:29:22 I'm serious. I bike Mimico, and I see his signs everywhere. So, if you're looking to buy and or sell in Mimico real estate scene. I'm serious. I bike Mimico and I see his signs everywhere. So if you're looking to buy and or sell in Mimico, which is a fantastic neighborhood, go to realestatelove.ca. He's in the know in Mimico. Free drum lessons with every purchase. I didn't say that.
Starting point is 00:29:39 And Ridley Funeral Home, I have a great story, but I'm going to wait for it. It's not a great story because it's based on something extremely sad and tragic. But basically, I was witness this week to just how fantastic the people at Ridley Funeral Home
Starting point is 00:29:52 are. And this is a story I'll tell in a future episode. But I want to just give some love to Brad and the good people at Ridley Funeral Home who went above and beyond this week. And Joe from TO, maybe he'll jump on a future episode to tell us how he was treated by Ridley Funeral Home who went above and beyond this week and Joe from TO maybe he'll jump on a future episode to tell us
Starting point is 00:30:07 how he was treated by Ridley Funeral Home which is fantastic and they've been pillars of the community since 1921 I'm still trying to get hooked up with those guys well let me know if I can help because they're good people and you're a good person and Cam's a good person he's alright
Starting point is 00:30:23 are you ready now for your first jam yeah i'm gonna have to make a request before we start wow what would you like i think this song might trigger stew a bit not so much the song itself but thinking this is an inappropriate i've so many fun facts here that are so fun i want to make sure i can get through them i feel like we could do an entire like i'm not even kidding i feel like we can do a three-hour episode just on this song so stew i'm gonna have to request i'm gonna mute i i can i can mute it just it just you know if you're at a band eight, maybe like take it down to two, just while we hear this song.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Cause how's this, is this good? How much of the song, that doesn't help. How much of the song do you want me to play before I bring it down? So we can listen. Well, Mike,
Starting point is 00:31:14 Mike, as you know, there's one specific part that's essential. So, um, let's just see how it goes. Why don't you drop the needle and, uh,
Starting point is 00:31:22 yeah, let's, let's kick things off. As every day goes by, how can we close our eyes until we open up our hearts? Holy shit, what a banger. We can learn to share and show how much we care. Love this jam. Right from the moment that we start.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Seems like overnight we see the world in a different light. Dan Hill. The green onion. The purple onion. He played there. Hey, Brian! Hey, Brian! White pipes. Hey, Brian!
Starting point is 00:32:24 Wipe pipes. Aaron and Brim. Don't you know the tears are not enough? If we could walk together Actually, Mike, I think the key part's in about, like, 40 seconds. Let's just get there, and then we'll start with the fun part. Okay, when you start talking, I'll bring it down. There you go. Is it, like, Rock Wysine or somebody? Celine?
Starting point is 00:33:06 Too early for Celine. Corey! Wow. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, I'll just go after this part. After this. Getty fucking Lee.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Honestly, guys, we should do a special episode only on this song where we just dissect everything. Like, I think three hours might not be enough. Tears are not enough. Holy shit, what a jam north northern lights northern lights number one i know you have so many fun facts that i'm talking over you just to say i actually had a top of mind because you picked it so i asked gato why the fuck gato aren't you on this and you could tell i touched a nerve like he was pissed at the time like he wasn't
Starting point is 00:34:02 invited to be singing along with these guys well i mean we're gonna we're gonna talk about some of the other folks who were there and i i seen some of these names i don't blame them frankly um so yeah tears are not enough northern lights big massive single from 1985 a canadian all-star jamboree of the we try to guess can we try to guess the personnel? I think that's a special episode. It really would be several hours of us dissecting this song. Can we try to guess some of the names until we run out?
Starting point is 00:34:33 And then you can fill in the blanks. I don't think we'll have time. I agree with Mike. I honestly think we should do a special episode. Do you know Salome Bay? Salome Bay is singing in this jam. Salome Bay. Well, it's a shame that hunger really isn't an issue anymore.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Otherwise, it's a good thing. It all got solved. My point is, yeah, it all got solved thanks to this song. Hunger hasn't been an issue in the world since 1985 thanks to this song. Yeah, well, we're going to get to it. Okay. The floor is yours, Cam. The floor is yours.
Starting point is 00:35:04 I got so much, and this is even going to skim the surface. Okay. The important part, the elephant in the room, that French part. Who was that? Was that Celine Dion? Mitsu?
Starting point is 00:35:14 First of all, not Mitsu. Remember, this is 85. What year is this? What year is this? 1985. Yeah, way too early for Celine. That's the thing.
Starting point is 00:35:23 I have no fucking clue. Is it the Gina lady who sings the anthem at Habs games? She just died a couple of years ago, I think. No, no, no, no, no. It was Veronique Bellevaux. Oh, yeah. Veronique Bellevaux. Robert Chalabois.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Oh, Chalabois, yeah. Good guy. Claude Dubois. I don't know any of them. Claude Dubois. All people who are Quebecbec irish boy can identify oh we do have a couple of irishmen irish irishmen i don't know if we have irishmen we have a couple of quebeckers nailed it there you go right on cue oh my god yeah he's that's not fair
Starting point is 00:35:57 though he's french okay i'm gonna take a deep breath here we go Okay. Did we know that there was a French Canadian charity single at the same time? No. No. It was called Les yeux de femme, which I almost think is like Hungry Eyes, like kind of an Eric Carman type thing. Eric Carman, yeah. Now, Veronique of those three was the only one who appeared on both singles. Well, Veronique was a massive star.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Now, but you know who also appeared on Les Uds de Femmes? Okay, let me... Don't stop. Let me think somebody... Gino Vanelli. Her name has come up already. It's not Mitsu? A pint-sized Celine Dion. She was like 17 at the time.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Mitsu. No, Celine Dion. I thought you were saying she was a pint-sized Celine Dion. No. All right, I'm with you now. So there was that single. But wait, Celine Dion's on that Tears Are Not Enough. She's not on that.
Starting point is 00:36:54 Is she? No, she was on the French single. Okay, I'm with you now. I'm caught on now. It's the beer. Okay, there were three FOTMs featured in this chorus. Mike, do you know who they are? I'll let Stu take the first crack, because I think I know who they are.
Starting point is 00:37:11 That are FOTMs? Three FOTMs. Well, is Gino on the song? Amazingly, he is not. Wow. I'm kind of shocked. He should have been on tour or something. He got grottoed. He should have been there.
Starting point is 00:37:27 Sass wouldn't have been on there yet. Good guess. The ones that I recognize that aren't necessarily FOTMs, that's the thing. It's like the Corey Hart's and the Brian Adams and the Geddy Lee's. Corey Hart was this close, my brother.
Starting point is 00:37:41 Three fellas. There's no Lee Aaron. There's no Le'Aaron. There's no Molly Johnson. I mean, Biff Naked would be younger than Celine. So who is it? I can help with this. For sure, one is Andy Kim. Andy Kim, correct.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Yeah, sure, sure, yeah. Because I know, because Gato seemed pissed off. He was there. Kim Mitchell. Oh, Kim Mitchell. I should have got that one. That's a recent F was there. Kim Mitchell. Oh, Kim Mitchell. I should have got that one. That's a recent FOTM. Kim Mitchell, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Who's the third? Okay, give me a sec. Give me a moment. Marie McLaughlin? Marie McLaughlin. Wow. That's a big get. That's a big get.
Starting point is 00:38:16 I'll just say of those three, Marie McLaughlin was the only one who had lyrics. He was in like a little, I think like a trio with Romp and Ronnie Hawkins and I feel like George Fox or someone. Wow. I don't know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:32 Is Platinum Blonde there in that song? Just the Mark guy, right? What's his name? Mark. Mark. I want to say Mark Howe. No. Hempshire.
Starting point is 00:38:41 Hempshire. Mark Holmes. Mark Holmes. Yeah, he was definitely in it. Okay. Now, you mentioned for Greg Godovich, it's sort of God's nose out of joint about not being in this. Here are some of the people who were in it.
Starting point is 00:38:54 Now, we had Oscar Peterson. I almost want to do what Sue suggested. I want to almost, like, we keep going until we run out of names. Yeah. So, we got Leona Boyd. Oh, I guess we can. Okay. Leona Boyd oh i guess we can't okay leona boyd future future uh future fotm yeah we had fucking motherfucking frank mills
Starting point is 00:39:13 oh we talked about a tiny dancer with no music box music box dancer yeah like we already had one pianist oscar peterson we need a fucking frank mills there we had i you know these great musicians eugene levy and uh catherine o'hara and the late great john candy who died 27 years ago today wow is this a david foster jam he's in there david foster produced it by brian adams the song title by rock and hide paul Paul Hyde and Bob Rock. Wow. There's so much here. Also in the chorus, amazingly, was Peter Gross. Can you believe?
Starting point is 00:39:49 No, I'm just kidding. Now, I'm curious why this guy was in the chorus by Barry Harris. Do we know Barry? I don't know Barry Harris. What band is he in? Barry Harris is one half of Con Can. Oh, my God. Wow.
Starting point is 00:40:06 This is years before Con Can had I Beg Your Pardon and some other hits. Okay, there was so much fucking here. I'm just going to burn through these. I love this so much. Yeah. Okay, Neil Young. You remember his famous line when David Foster tried to crack his pitch? Fuck you.
Starting point is 00:40:22 That's my sound man. Right. That is his sound. He was was fantastic um okay a few more joni i mean joni mitchell the fact joni mitchell's on here is pretty amazing because she really picked her spots she said and she mentioned this is kind of ironic but how starving she was when she was recording this she said i know it sounds, but I was literally starving when we did this session because my yoga teacher had sent me to a psychic dietician who, while rubbing her chin and swinging her arms around in circles, had diagnosed a lot of food allergies. Wow. The result was predictably that I was hardly allowed to eat anything.
Starting point is 00:40:59 So by the time I arrived with an apple and a rice patty, my poor stomach was making all these strange noises. Wait, let me get this straight. Joni Mitchell took a pass on Woodstock, but did not miss. Tears are not enough. Yeah, and she brought rice cake. Now, you may recall at the end of this video, there's a scene with all these hockey players.
Starting point is 00:41:20 Wayne Gretzky's front and center. Now, that was actually filmed at the 1985 All-star game in Calgary. And that group of hockey players was actually the Campbell conference all-stars. Do you know what that means? Do you want, there was a 1985 Toronto Maple leaf who was in that ensemble.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,
Starting point is 00:41:38 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,
Starting point is 00:41:39 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,

Starting point is 00:41:40 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,
Starting point is 00:41:41 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,
Starting point is 00:41:42 Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick Borier Salming? Borier Salming. No. Okay, give me a moment. Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Ken Reggett.
Starting point is 00:41:48 No, no, Tom Fergus. No, it was fucking Miroslav Fritscher. Whoa! Wow. Miroslav Fritscher is in the Tears Are Not Enough video. That's the big mind blow. I slew a former Maple Leafs. Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhrer, Mike Crusher, Khrushchev Nesky,
Starting point is 00:42:03 and former Leaf coach Randy Carlisle. I can't handle this. This is too much for me. I can't handle it. Let me give one more fact, Mike. We got to park this because we got to do this proper. Guess how much money this song raised. 30 grand. I'm going to say...
Starting point is 00:42:19 You're actually not far off, sadly. I was going to go way higher, like $5 million. No way. $3.2 million. I was close. That's not that far off. Oh, no. I was going to go way higher, like $5 million. No way. $3.2 million. I was close. That's not that far off. That was by 1990. I'm just saying you have
Starting point is 00:42:31 all of this talent. Yeah. That's a lot of money. That's the equivalent of like $15 million now. I feel like Neil Young could have just cut a check or something for $3 million.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Yeah. And while most of the money went to Africa, 10% of the funds were set aside to assist Canadian food banks. How many units were sold? A lot. A lot.
Starting point is 00:42:52 A lot. Okay. What sold more? Stu Stone's album or... I would say that this album sold more. Oh, shit. One other key fun fact. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:03 We're going to circle around to something circle around dot dot that that too i and i never knew this there was an album we are the world of course the u.s single sure that was 10 tracks title track was we are the world this song was on the u.s album i knew this wow knew this. And also featured on that album. I mean, talk about a who's who of the 80s. You've got Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Chicago, Kenny Rogers, Huey Lewis and the News. Lionel Richie. Lionel Richie.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Prince is the other name. It's Steve Perry. Why did Steve Perry sneak in there? He was a big star. Yeah, he was a big star. Yeah, I guess so. He's a singer of Journey? What do you mean? He was a huge star.
Starting point is 00:43:44 I'm with Stu on this one. Yeah, okay. He big star. Yeah, I guess so. He's a singer of Journey? What do you mean? He was a huge star. I'm with Stu on this one. Yeah, okay. He's worthy. Okay. That's all I got for now. Well, we should at some point, excluding the French Canadians who have their own music industry
Starting point is 00:43:54 that we're just unaware of, it would be interesting to look at all the artists that represented English Canada and determine which was the least worthy of being there. Like a top five worst. Yeah. I mean, you may recall there was sort least worthy of being there. I don't know if I mean. You may recall there was sort of the new wave section of the song. But there's no Gord. Gord Depp's not in there
Starting point is 00:44:13 because that would be another FOTM. How come he didn't make the cut? What about Gord? What about our Gord? Well, it was 85. I'm talking about Gord Lightfoot? Gord. Well, it was 85. I'm talking about Gord. Lightfoot? Gord Martineau. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:44:29 Because Gord Lightfoot is in the, of course, he's like the first voice, I think, or something. I'll say Lisa Dalbello. No, Dalbello, whose sister-in-law is, you're right, that's a surprise, but her sister-in-law is Danny Elwell. So her sister-in-law is an FOTM. Yeah. I would love to see the list.
Starting point is 00:44:55 Do you ever look at like the Woodstock Wikipedia page of all the artists who were either offered allegedly or otherwise and declined to play? I would love to see all the artists that were supposed to be there. I wonder if you ever had like a Sharon Lewis and Bram Raffi, Anne Murray tree, like a little section. Sandy Beach. Yeah. I'd like that one to work. Anne Murray is on this jam, of course. I just want to shout out a couple of people in the live.torontomic.com chat. So I just want to say hello to Andrew Ward, who is showing up.
Starting point is 00:45:16 And of course, Andy Pandy. Andrew Ward, who got his Ridley Funeral Home toque. I dropped it off. And of course, I want to say hello to Ian Service, who made an appearance. We wouldn't be doing this at live.torontomic.com without Ian Service.
Starting point is 00:45:31 Just something Andrew Ward just mentioned. Do you guys remember the song, Let the Good Guys Win? Let the good guys win. Take the old times out, put the new times in. It's not ringing a bell with me, bud. This was a song that came out like 1990. It was Murray McLachlan, Paul
Starting point is 00:45:48 Hyde, and Tom Cochran. And Mike, I know you and I, I am so fucking fired up about this. I know you and I talk a lot about the Canadian version of Established USX. And that was a one-off single with those three gentlemen.
Starting point is 00:46:04 What do you think that was a Canadian equivalent of? Oak Ridge. Traveling Wilburys? Oak Ridge. Traveling Wilburys, yes. Thank you. Not the Oak Ridge boys?
Starting point is 00:46:10 Okay, just. Like Stu nailed it. It's so fucking obvious. So Paul Hyde made the Canadian version of the. I gotta go get a fluffle. I'll be right back. Feel awful.
Starting point is 00:46:20 Okay. Shout out to Steve as well, who's a Sandy Beach legend. Okay, let's, Sandy Beach legend. Okay. Now it's my jam because we've changed the order. So thank you, Cam, who's going to get us falafel. Great jam. It's about time you played a good song.
Starting point is 00:46:33 It's a great jam. Here's my first jam. You ready? Yes. You need more cowbell. Oh, oh. Hey! Bye-bye, mon cowboy.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Bye-bye bye mon rodeo C'est si dur de tomber si bas Quand t'as été si beau Tu fais l'amour comme un dieu Et tu le fais quand je le veux Rien dans la tête, tout dans les yeux Un corps de maître, une peau de feu Oh, my heart is going so fast right now. You have no idea. Holy smokes.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Is anyone surprised I played this jam? No. Oh, my heart is going so fast right now. You have no idea. Holy smokes. Is anyone surprised I played this jam? No. No, it was, I pondered it, but I figured one of us would be grabbing it. You were like, I'm not touching that because Toronto Mike's got that one. Man, I'm even listening to it. I had such the crush on Mitsu.
Starting point is 00:48:03 Wow. Okay. I won't even repeat any stories told in the first Steve Anthony appearance on Toronto Mic. I'm going to make you all go back and listen if you want to hear a little more Mitsu there. But I have some fun facts for everybody. I'm going to take it since neither of you speak French.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Do you guys know where the name Mitsu comes from? It's like an unleavened bread, but pronounced in French. Oh no, that's matzah. It's close. So, in Japanese, speaking of multilingual linguistic things,
Starting point is 00:48:39 in Japanese, the word honey is Mitsu, M-I-T-S-U. And Mitsu took that word and changed the spelling into the French version of M-I-T-S-O-U. So that's where Mitsu comes from.
Starting point is 00:48:56 Honey in Japanese. Now, she... Was she like the Canadian Madonna? The French Canadian Madonna Or was she the French Canadian Debbie Gibson I think she's more of a Debbie Gibson Than a Madonna I think she's
Starting point is 00:49:11 French Canadian Samantha Fox Whoa yes sir Hubba hubba That's a good one That's a good one So this is her debut single So bye bye Mon Cowboy. And by the way, this song is multilingual
Starting point is 00:49:28 because the bulk of it's in French. But I mean, I took grade nine French. Bye Bye, that's English. Cowboy, that's... She's definitely put a little English in there for us. But I love this song. I saw it on Much Music often. There's, I mean,
Starting point is 00:49:46 I won't even, I got a translator to tell me what she's saying, but the English translation is she's saying, bye-bye my cowboy, bye-bye my rodeo. It's hard to fall so low when you've been so high. And I'm going to say a sentence that'll tell you I'm talking about 1989.
Starting point is 00:50:02 Are you guys ready for a sentence that'll take you back? Hell yeah. Yes, please please there is a fantastic shep pettibone remix of this song that came out in 1989 like chris chris no so i i thought maybe that would resonate with you but obviously it didn't but i had so many like i used you know i had so many cds where i like i would buy the singles and i would see oh there's a there's a shep Pettibone remix as one of the versions. So I actually don't know. I should Google it. What does this even mean?
Starting point is 00:50:30 Shep Pettibone was remixing everything in my collection for a period of time. Like, Stu, do you know the name Shep Pettibone? No. All right. Just Canadian tracks or Canadian tracks? No. Lots of stuff. I had Shep Pettibone remixes. I'm going to do a quick Google now.
Starting point is 00:50:51 Can we get a show of hands? Anyone who's watching in the chat? Does anyone in the chat? Just chime up. I have no clue what you're talking about. Does anyone know Shep Pettibone? Okay, I just did a quick Google. I'm on the Wikipedia page now.
Starting point is 00:51:04 Shep Pettibone, who, by the way, is 81 years old right now. So shout out to Shep Pettibone? So, okay, I just did a quick Google. I'm on the Wikipedia page now. Shep Pettibone, who, by the way, is 81 years old right now. So, shout out to Shep. Oh, is he driving a sticker, you, Mobile, also? Possibly. But he's an American record producer, remixer, songwriter, and club DJ. He's one of the most prolific of the 1980s. So many things I had, be it, I don't know, Madonna, all these different things I had. There was, like, George Michael, Madonna.
Starting point is 00:51:25 I would buy the singles, and there would always, Madonna, all these different things I had. There was, like, George Michael, Madonna. I would have the, I would buy the singles, and there would always be a Shep Pettibone remix. Oh, shout out to Shep Pettibone. I knew nothing about him, but he remixed a lot of shit. I'm just looking at Miami Sound Machine. He remixed some, uh, the Bee Gees, Bananarama, B-52s, Art of Noise,
Starting point is 00:51:41 uh, Bros. You remember Bros? So he's a big 80s guy. A lot of stuff here. Cindy Lauper, David Bowie. They could have been on this list because they were German or something. Prince? All right. Let's talk about my selection here. Before you play it, I just
Starting point is 00:51:57 want to say this is an exhibition round. I've decided since Cam had such a really great entry, I'm going to lay down this time because I'm realizing this is probably not a great selection anyway. Well, he had it before you did, actually. I'll just chime in. Oh, Cam had this before I did?
Starting point is 00:52:14 Yeah, if it's the right one, if I have it in the right order. No, you don't. Okay, just tell me in a DM or in code, which is supposed to be your first one. Well, I'll say that rather than wasting time dissecting whether my song qualifies or not, I think we should talk about the movie that... Oh, okay. I know
Starting point is 00:52:32 what you're saying now. The movie that it inspired. It is definitely a song that's not in English and it has a lot of fun facts to it, but... I definitely am going to make this an exhibition round for clerical purposes. I'm still going to make this an exhibition round for clerical purposes. I'm still going to win the episode,
Starting point is 00:52:48 but I'm laying down this round because Cam had such a great pick. You're going to do the finger poke of doom? Exactly. Okay. So this is the movie one. You ready? Yes. Para bailar la bamba Ay, arriba, ay, arriba, por ti seré, por ti seré, por ti seré. Yo no soy marinero, yo no soy marinero, soy capitán, soy capitán, soy capitán.
Starting point is 00:53:39 Bam, bam, bam, bam. Bam, bam, bam, bam. Bam, bam, bam, bam. All right. You know, we were talking about like coming to America and then the sequel comes out 20 years later and does better than the original. Like it's rare to think of something that does that. yeah so here's an example of that happening because the lost lobos version of the song labamba charted at number one on the chart richie valens version of labamba only made it up to number 22 on the chart so here you have a cover of a song where the cover performed exponentially better. But the cover was recorded originally because of the folklore around this song being such a hit.
Starting point is 00:54:36 And it really wasn't such a hit. It wasn't even Ritchie Valens' biggest hit. Isn't that crazy? Interesting. What was Ritchie Bell in? Oh, Donna. Oh, Donna. Okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Did you know that? Go ahead. He was on the plane with, like, Buddy Holly. We'll get to that in just a moment. But, I mean, this is Los Lobos, who just covered the song, and I guess Lou Diamond Phillips in the movie sings, but it's the Los Lobos guy who he's sort of, you know, he's singing. That's the guy who's really singing. Right.
Starting point is 00:55:13 Yeah. I saw Los Lobos in concert, by the way. Can we talk about can we talk about the great Isai Morales? OK. Who played Bob, Richie's brother, in the movie La Bamba. And absolutely steals the movie. Everybody remembers who's seen the great film La Bamba. You know, he's on the bridge.
Starting point is 00:55:35 The Sleepwalker song is playing. And Richie's plane goes down and he yells, Richie! It's a very iconic scene. And that wasn't Luis Guzzman no you know what everybody this is one of those uh this is one of those uh uh mandela effect things where everybody thinks that it's louis guzman and i thought that it was him too yeah and it really wasn't wow morales i could have sworn it was louis guzman i love Luis Guzman. He seems like just universal. Isai Morales and Luis Guzman
Starting point is 00:56:08 are two different people. That's the real mind blow tonight. Of course, Lou Diamond Phillips had quite a run during this time. Some great films two in a row that I can think of are La Bamba and Young Guns 2,
Starting point is 00:56:24 which is a sequel that's better than the original. And what a run for Lou Diamond Phillips. Some interesting other sort of cameos in the film. I would like to mention Rick Dees, the disco duck himself. He played, he was in the film as well. The Stray Cat himself, Brian Setzer of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. And the Stray Cats played Eddie Co Setzer of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Wow. And the Stray Cats played Eddie Cochran in the movie.
Starting point is 00:56:48 Wow. You know, you had the big bopper also in there, Buddy Holly. Well, Summertime Blues. Yep. Right. But yeah, it's a really good movie. I wonder if it holds up. But I remember it's like one of those movies I saw like multiple times back then. La Bamba was a repeat watch back in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:57:04 Do you know Lou Diamond Phillips is actually a Filipino descent? He could be. I mean, Yokozuna is a Samoan. I'm here to report the facts. I don't know much, but I know everyone of Filipino descent. I don't know much, but I know I love you. Spoiler alerts for your next jam. I feel like this movie came out around the same time as the Buddy Holly biopic with, I think, Gary.
Starting point is 00:57:30 Was it Gary Busey? Well, I think Gary Busey was ahead of this. I feel like. Yeah, but slightly. But, like, generally around the same time. The movie was a smash hit, by the way. Cost $6 million to make. Made $54 million at the box office.
Starting point is 00:57:43 Wow. Big fuck. Wow. That was Gary Busey who was fantastic. Gary what? Did you call him Busey? Yeah, Busey. Is that how you say Gary Busey? How do you say it? Gary Busey! Then he had that motorcycle accident
Starting point is 00:58:00 and he's... Who, Gary Busey? Yeah, he hasn't been the same since that motorcycle accident actually a couple of good comments here from jokeroo in the chat room uh richie is one and then a couple lines later richie again so thank you for those yeah stand in the lane that was that was like there's buddy holly was way ahead of this because uh vp of sales says buddy holly story was 78. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:58:27 I think you're way off. You must be thinking, maybe you're thinking of, you know what you might be thinking of? He might be thinking of Gary Busey. No, the killer. There was Great Balls of Fire. I think that's what you're thinking of. Great Balls of Fire certainly did come out around that time. That was like, what, Dennis Quaid? No, yeah, it's Dennis Quaid. Yes.
Starting point is 00:58:44 Can I ask you guys, do you like music, what are they called, biopaid? Yeah, it's Dennis Quaid. Yes. Can I ask you guys, do you like music, what are they called? Biopics? Yeah, I used to. I liked Ray. I've liked a bunch of them, actually. They're good. I even thought the Johnny Cash one was pretty good. I saw a bit of the Queen ones.
Starting point is 00:59:00 They're all kind of the same. They're all kind of the same story. But it's still fun to watch. Anne Romer didn't know anything about Queen until she saw the recent biopic, and now she is in love with Queen. Sorry, she didn't know anything about Queen? No. She never heard of this band, this music?
Starting point is 00:59:18 I had the same reaction because she kicked out the jams of me this week, and she picked Another One Bites the Dust. And she basically discovers Queen because of that movie. Like, think about it. This woman is, you know, I don't know how old she is, but she might be in her 60s. This woman was almost our governor general. And by the way, the general is still with us.
Starting point is 00:59:37 Spoiler alert. He's still with us. Gary Busey. Have you been going your whole life calling him Busey? Is today the day that you've been corrected for the first time? Say it again properly. Boosie. Yeah, like, I don't think I care.
Starting point is 00:59:51 Like, Boosie, Boosie. Like, I don't think I've said his name out loud until today. Wow, we have a few fact checkers. Boosie, Bussy, whatever his name is. They are saying that was 1978. Yeah, they're right. I think you've conflated. Great Balls of Fire. Yes, you've conflated Great Balls of Fire. And Mike, you could
Starting point is 01:00:09 have played Jerry Lee Lewis with that hair. Goodness gracious. And Christina Ricci played the cousin that he marries. Did he marry like a 12-year-old? 14, 13. Yeah, not very old. That's for sure. 14, I want to say. Give or take a few years. Hey, Stu.
Starting point is 01:00:25 Yes. Who's that? Cambrio has a question for you. Whether or not you ever met Jake Bussey. Yeah, have you met Jake Bussey? Have you met Jake Bussey? I've met Jake Bussey. I have met Jake Bussey, but never Jake Bussey.
Starting point is 01:00:42 But Jake Bussey was a rapper at one point on this show uh there was a show on upn network i forget what it was called but i'm sure someone can find it but jake bucey played a rapper on this show one one tree hill maybe it wasn't jake bucey maybe scott maybe i'm thinking of scott khan yeah you forgot you confused your sons of somebody somebody's kid was rapping but yet Jake Boosie was just in something that I watched recently I wonder what that was
Starting point is 01:01:11 hmm what is he in? Jake Bussy Jake Boosie I think is how we say it but it's funny how though it's funny to me how I knew Cam was really thinking of Grey balls of fire and like because i i do believe you've conflated those movies and that's why i think i think you're right
Starting point is 01:01:30 okay so quick is it possible wait do you know the boondock saints yeah love it yeah i mean you know like the documentary about the making of the boondock which is excellent yes that's where i saw jake bussey uh he's in that movie. Yes. I think it's called Overnight. Yes. Yes. Fantastic. I've actually seen that, if you could believe it. Yeah, Jake Bussey's in that.
Starting point is 01:01:50 It's fantastic. Quick note on Los Lobos. I listen to a Los Lobos song every Friday morning. Does anyone know what that means? Why is Mike listening to Los Lobos every Friday morning? Is he a super fan? No, because of Hep C. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 01:02:06 Thank you for being here. The Hebsey on sports theme song is Do the Murray by Lost Lobos. He's personal for Steve Berlin, of course, who's a great producer. He produced a hip album, right? Yeah, two of them. Two of them. Dance and Power and Music at Work. Mike, sorry, I might have missed it.
Starting point is 01:02:21 Where did you see Lost Lobos? Oh, Lost Lobos opened for Neil young when i caught him at the acc as it was known there canada center so and um uh speaking of guess who i know we were talking earlier about the guess who but randy bachman joined uh i don't think no didn't join los lobos joined neil young on stage for a jam or two, as I recall. Their relationship is so interesting because they go so far back and really were like nobody. Can I say the line? Ready?
Starting point is 01:02:53 Portage, Maine, 50 below. Shout out to Winnipeggers everywhere. Shout out to Winnipeg. Shout out to Sammy Cohn. And at least the two people who knew that Los Lobos opened every episode of Hebsey on Sports, which I'll be doing live tomorrow at 9.20 a.m. on my Facebook page, facebook.com slash Toronto Mike, with a D at the end.
Starting point is 01:03:12 There you go. Anyway, Mike, I think Stu's pick here and my next pick were very well sequenced because these are both tracks that also were movies of the same name. Oh. Oh, yes. This makes me think of Juan and Lieve Pemka at the nightclub. Woo! It's awesome. The Forbidden Dance. Yeah, we we're gonna get to it
Starting point is 01:03:47 are you gonna talk about the dual the dueling uh movies two movies came out at the same time i'm gonna get into it all all the things are you gonna talk about the jennifer lopez remix that came out a few years ago? I'm going to talk about this. Can we see Juan do some moves? I want to see Stu Stone do some moves. Okay, let me bring it down, but they're giving me a hard time. Apparently, I mispronounced lots of words. It's not Randy Bachman.
Starting point is 01:04:26 It's Randy Backman. Did you guys know that? It's actually Randy Bachman. Is he a member of the tribe, Stu? I don't know about that. I think he's a Mormon. I believe Efika seems like defiantly saying no to that. I think he's a Mormon.
Starting point is 01:04:44 Or if not a Mormon, like a Mennonite or something. Mennonite, maybe? The Boosie Brothers. Okay. So let's hear from Cam Gordon on this fantastic selection. Lombada by Keoma. Now, were you guys the Lombada craze we all might remember in the late 80s? When did the Lombada, the erotic dance of grinding loins out on the dance floor,
Starting point is 01:05:13 first get on your radar? Do you remember either hearing this song or hearing stuff? I have a very specific moment when I first heard of Lombada. I can't wait to hear that story. I'll just say I do remember the phase it didn't seem like it lasted very long but there were i remember two movies coming out that were kind of capitalizing on this song i know this is probably blowing away your fun facts but i do remember like the dueling lambada movies but what's your memory here yeah for sure i i saw something on either
Starting point is 01:05:40 inside edition or entertainment tonight that was almost trying to create like a moral panic about the Lombada taking over America, basically. And it would describe it. And they talked a lot about loins, like a lot of talk about loins grinding together. I think it's like Dirty Dancing came out with such a hit. And they were like, oh, you think that's dirty watch this dancing yeah let's take yeah i i hate to say stew nailed it with that point like that is exactly what that is and it even sort of references this
Starting point is 01:06:15 you know cod the idea of the dirty dancing was uh very much in the culture and this this really up leveled it uh the the forbidden dance someone mentioned it. You know, shout out to Steve. You know, he's probably doing the Lombada right now. Such a nondescript name. Like everyone's got these creative names in there and this guy's name is Steve. Yeah. So I think part of the controversy with the Lombada
Starting point is 01:06:38 and it's even referenced on Wikipedia, if you could believe it, you know, with the Lomb, just to describe it a bit. Dancers generally dance with arched legs, with steps being from side to side, turning, and even swaying.
Starting point is 01:06:56 Now, at the time when the dance became popular, short skirts for women were very much a fashion. Men wore long trousers. Tight trousers. That too. And the dances become associated
Starting point is 01:07:12 with these sorts of clothing, especially for women wearing short skirts that swirl up when the woman spins around, typically revealing 90s style thong underwear. This is from Wikipedia. This describes what lambada is. That's what happens when Cam makes Wikipedia entries.
Starting point is 01:07:30 You can check the cash. It's getting steamy in here. There's a moment where Ann Romer's kicking out a jam and she literally starts removing her clothes because it gets too hot for her to handle,. Please continue.
Starting point is 01:07:45 She's never heard of Queen. This song, big hit. Number one in Brazil. All across Europe. Austria, Belgium, France, Norway, Italy. How was it in Colombia? I didn't get there. Juan will let us know.
Starting point is 01:08:01 Juan, let us know how it did in Colombia. Now, top five hit in the UK number four interestingly this song only went to 46 in the US Canada was even further down the charts even though I remember
Starting point is 01:08:11 seeing the video for this on much music I'd say an even heavy rotation at number 78 well you recorded it to VHS so you kept playing it
Starting point is 01:08:18 over and over again well just well you know there's less I used to watch this movie but like scrambled so you could like kind of see like a tush oh wow get the right that's what i did with mitsu's follow-up hit uh dimoie dimoie not to be confused with sand on what
Starting point is 01:08:38 that's it that sounds like a cam gordon already kicked that one out. Okay, the main movie just called Lombada. Yes. I actually, I think I know who this is, who the female lead in this movie is. Which movie? Lombada. Okay, because there's two, right? The movie.
Starting point is 01:08:56 Wow, that's crazy. Mine was La Bamba and yours was Lombada. Yeah, it's bananas. Okay, the lead was not it was obviously not j-lo so uh and it was not selma hayek so i don't know yeah uh it was luis guzman was it it was whoever played uh jan levinson on nbc's the office all All I know is Dana Levinson. Okay. Jan, she's in... Melora Hardin. Yes.
Starting point is 01:09:27 Okay, quick. She's in a show I loved called Transparent. Transparent. Is that about a parent that's trans? Correct. That's a really clever title. Yeah. Transparent.
Starting point is 01:09:39 If you get a chance to find it somewhere, you need to watch it. It's the guy... Oh, my God. The guy from Arrested Development. Who's the old guy in Arrested Development? Gary Busey. Jeffrey Tambor. Jeffrey Tambor.
Starting point is 01:09:52 He's fantastic. He plays a transgender woman. And Transparent is awesome. It's great. And she's in this as well. Harden. What's her name? Malory Harden? Malora? Malora Harden. malora hardy she's great what was the other lombada movie called the forbidden dance i think oh that was i thought
Starting point is 01:10:12 lombada the forbidden dance was the tagline for lombada yeah it wasn't maybe bps sales can confirm the correct names here uh in the interest of time i I'm going to go through these rest of the fun facts really quickly. Let's visit Siskel and Ebert here. What they thought of the movie Lombada. Siskel praised the performance of the lead performers, described it as an instant guilty pleasure. A film I'm almost embarrassed to admit that it
Starting point is 01:10:38 held my attention because I'm prepared to defend it now against Roger's sure attack. Ebert comes in. Very great. and he fucking does a stew stone tears it to shred views its dance sequences as badly lit badly photographed badly choreographed and attack the camera
Starting point is 01:10:54 angles and storylines he noted that he was stunned anyone would make this picture wow so thumbs up from Cisco thumbs down from Roger Ebert love those guys this song was like really litigious this song like ripped off another song that was ripping off another song Mike
Starting point is 01:11:09 I can't remember if I sent you a link to like the original I honestly it's the same song I don't even think we have to hear it no you didn't send me it no and we'll just end like the way like Mamba number five was like ripped off by ripped off by ripped off a little bit yeah like, the classic
Starting point is 01:11:25 photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy. Now, this band, Keoma Keora, what were they? Oh, yeah, Keoma Keora, yeah. Keoma. Now, the female voice in this, her name was Lawana Braz. Okay. Now,
Starting point is 01:11:41 this is sad. This is not a fun fact. Sad fact brought to you by ridley funeral homes yeah this is well yeah you're right this is shitty fact anyway in january of 2017 braz was found dead in her car oh police arrested three suspects oh murder oh god were suspected such as botch robbery or a revenge killing. Oh my god. Yeah, anyway. Thanks for bumming us out, man. Leola. Leola. What a horrible way to end that entry.
Starting point is 01:12:14 Oh, anyway. Maybe you should have led with that. Well, let's circle back to the movie and wind with something a bit more light-hearted. Circle, circle, dot, dot. On the soundtrack of the movie Lombada, not on the soundtrack of the Forbidden Dance, was something a bit more light hearted circle circle dot dot on the soundtrack of the movie Lombada not on the soundtrack of the Forbidden Dance was actually a single
Starting point is 01:12:29 a track by Kathy Sledge solo of Sister Sledge Sister Sledge of course a song called Lombada Dancing yeah I know that song did Niles Rogers produce that song yeah probably
Starting point is 01:12:44 he did all that Sister Sledge stuff underrated band Did Niles Rogers produce that show? Yeah, probably. Because I know he did all that Sister Sledge stuff. Yeah. Underrated band by Sister Sledge. And also, I think very Christian. I think it was difficult to get them to come. I remember they're very Christian, so they didn't want to. Nothing Christian about the Lombada. Absolutely not.
Starting point is 01:13:00 Too many lawyers involved. Right. Okay. And Mike, that's Niles. What did I say? Niles. Oh, I was thinking of the guy from Frasier. Which. And Mike, that's Niles. What did I say? Niles. Oh, I was thinking of the guy from Frasier. Which is coming back, by the way.
Starting point is 01:13:08 I want to point out something real quick. I wasn't wrong about Jake Boosie after all. Apparently, he was a rapper on a television program on the UPN. Someone found it on the chat here. Shasta McNasty. I remember auditioning for that show and making it all the way to the final callback, and Jake Boosie gets the part. Fuck him.
Starting point is 01:13:30 And the other two guys in it I'm friends with, Carmine, who ended up becoming a lead on CSI New York, so he made lots of money. And then Dale, who is the other guy on the show, he was on the Mickey mouse club. So really interesting show there. Shasta McNasty. I bet you it was not very good, but I remember wanting to get the part because I was really into rapping back then. And I thought, hell, I want to be on a rapping show.
Starting point is 01:13:58 If you got that part, you might be, you might not be here today on the 51st pandemic Friday. I know because I could be where Jake Boosie is right Mike before you go the next track I just say one thing about Nile Rodgers yes this actually has nothing to do with Nile Rodgers you remember the song by Pure Denial of course
Starting point is 01:14:15 of course when we were here's like a trip down memory lane when we were in high school Stu Stone used to sing a parody version of it where he'd go the N school, Stu Stone used to sing a parody version of it, where he'd go, da-da-da-da, the Nile, and we'd like to sing about Egypt. Yes. Very clever.
Starting point is 01:14:32 I do, actually, yes. I got a kick out of that. I enjoyed that. That was kind of a popular parody. Yeah, it was fun. And we also did Lombotomy, where we were like dancing with Lombata, but with our brains. It's kind of a weird owl. Before I kick out my second jam, I want to shout out Andrew Ward, who says, Mike, don't worry about pronunciation.
Starting point is 01:14:51 Oh, of course you're going to shout that out. Somebody who's babying you. In radio. You've done 700 million episodes. You should know Gary Boosie. He says in radio, there's always someone who spells things out phonetically. So it sounds natural. Did you say phonetically?
Starting point is 01:15:06 Are you pronouncing it like that now? What is happening right now? I'm in the Matrix. Phonetically? Yeah, because in The Simpsons, when Carl, remember Carl, who was like the secretary to Homer Simpson when he got the promotion because he got the hair when he took the
Starting point is 01:15:20 demoxin? Yes, sure. So Carl, I believe, spelled things out phonetically for Homer. Phoenetically? Yeah. Come on, Mike. You're putting me on. There's no way you say phoenetically.
Starting point is 01:15:33 It's a word. Carl did that in The Simpsons. Are you ready for my second jam? Yeah! Or are you going to judge me? me it's getting to the point where i'm no fun anymore i am sorry. Sometimes it hurts so badly. I must cry out loud. I am lonely.
Starting point is 01:16:16 I am yours. You are mine. You are what you are. You make it hard. Remember what we've said. what you are give back your heart remember what we've said and done and felt about each other if we'd have
Starting point is 01:16:36 mercy when does the bilingual part come in? don't let the past bring it down I'll bring it back up when we get there because the last verse, I think, is in Spanish.
Starting point is 01:16:47 But okay, so... You think it's in Spanish? Are you suggesting that song does not include a language other than English? Is that what you're suggesting? So far, I'm not hearing it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't...
Starting point is 01:16:58 Have you ever heard Judy Sweet Eyes... Sorry, Sweet... Sorry, I got it backwards. Sweet Judy Blue Eyes Before by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I mean, it sounds very... I thought it was
Starting point is 01:17:10 the Allman Brothers for some reason, but what do I know? So let me tell you some fun facts about this song. It's funny that earlier we talked about Neil Young
Starting point is 01:17:20 because he was on the first jam that Cam Gordon kicked out. I mean, the Crosby, Stills, and Nash Young song that Cam knows is American Dream. I like, you know, I know Neil Young doesn't like that song. I like that song.
Starting point is 01:17:30 So does Cam. I do too. Used to see you on every TV. Your smiling face looking back at me. I liked it. But anyway, this is not with Young. Young has nothing to do with this. Okay, so, but Neil Young, of course, was in Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills.
Starting point is 01:17:44 Stephen Stills wrote this song, Sweet Judy Blue Eyes. And then Crosby, Stills, and Nash, they're performing it here for us today. It reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'm going to try to remember to turn it up when we get to the Spanish part. Yeah, please do. Now, the spelling of this Sweet Judy Blue Eyes, of course course is sweet is spelled s-u-i-t-e colon and that's sort of a play on words because of course um it's they i believe it's about steven still's former girlfriend judy collins do you guys know uh judy collins, wake me up when this becomes interesting.
Starting point is 01:18:27 She famously covered Both Sides Now by Canada's own Joni Mitchell. Oh, that's true. It's a definitive version. She does cover a lot of great songs like Turn, Turn, Turn and stuff, but of course, she was in one of those... Yes, I was going to say, one of the jams kicked out by Ralph Ben-Murray when he was here to kick out the jams was Send in the
Starting point is 01:18:43 Clown. Ah, yeah, that's a good one. Also in The Simpsons. Speaking of Simpsons. Yes, I know. Everything comes back to The Simpsons. You know, back when we were in high school,
Starting point is 01:18:51 I used to do a parody of this song called Sweet Judy Bloom Eyes. Who's, I believe, still alive. I hope so. I think she's like a... She had a copy of Superfudge. She died drinking freckle juice.
Starting point is 01:19:06 Somebody find out how old Judy Bloom is. I need to know so put it in the chat if you guys are paying attention are you there god it's me margaret okay so again i will turn this up when it gets bilingual or whatever but i have a fun fact about why it's not all in english so it's a good jam I want to turn it up anyway. But the final section, the coda, if you will, is sung in Spanish. Spanish! Stephen Stills said that he intentionally made the final stanzas unexpected and difficult, even using a foreign language for the lyrics,
Starting point is 01:19:40 just to make sure nobody would understand it. And ready? You know what else? Not even Spanish-speaking people. So, Lieve Femke is Juan there, because I'm going to turn this up, and I want Juan to tell us if he understands it, okay? Okay.
Starting point is 01:19:55 Is this Luis Guzman singing? Here we go. Turn it up. It's Juan Guzman. It's a long one. I have a little time here. Crosby,by stills and ash is a great fucking band like uh love love their shit and speaking of woodstock which uh joni did not attend uh joni was dating stephen stills at that time stephen stills got around judy collins uh joni
Starting point is 01:20:20 mitchell because she see she writes the song woodstock for Crosby, Stills and Nash, if I'm correct. Because her boyfriend was there and she was not. Okay. Neil Young was not at Woodstock, though. No, he wasn't. Oh, yes, he was. Yes, he was. He told the cameraman, because they were filming the documentary, right, which is fucking fantastic, came out in 1970.
Starting point is 01:20:38 He said, don't show me. So, like, he didn't want to be seen, but he was 100% on that stage. I think half the songs, Crosby, Stills and Nash did were their own thing. And the other half were like with young, if I remember correctly, but he was there for sure.
Starting point is 01:20:52 He was there, but you know, he's not on the movie because he didn't want to be filmed or whatever. Okay. So we're going to listen to a bit more of this cause it's a beautiful song. And then, uh, we'll find out if Juan understood any of it.
Starting point is 01:21:03 Here it comes. Enjoy your great legs of beer we got good jams tonight voices of the angel Angel Ring around the moon Asking me Said she's so free How can you catch the sparrow It's coming Trust me Imagine it never comes Here it comes
Starting point is 01:21:42 They see little Imagine it never comes. Here it comes. Lacey Lelting lyric. Losing love like manatee. Change my life. Make it right. Be my lady. That's a good part of the song right there. That's the legendary part of the song right there. That's the legendary part of the song. Stay tuned.
Starting point is 01:22:11 Okay. Yeah, this is a big jam now. Hear this? Well, I mean, they're clearly saying do-do-do-do-do. Did you hear the Spanish? I actually think that's like a cover of a Spanish song, that part. Isn't it? That's like a famous song. What's he saying? No, that's them.
Starting point is 01:23:14 That's them. Because like Cypress Hill or somebody like sampled that. I'm going to try to find it. Que linda me le traiga Cuba, la reina de la mar cariba. Salio sol no tiene sangria. Que triste que no puedo vaya a ova ova. This is painful. That's a bunch of war. Yeah, a bunch of war.
Starting point is 01:23:43 Hold on. Let's hear from Juan. He's a bunch of words. Hold on, let's hear from Juan. He's the official Spanish representative. Juan, does that mean anything? It's Spanish, but it's just a bunch of random words running together. Like the WKRP
Starting point is 01:23:59 end credits, as mentioned by Canada Kev. Hey Mike, I'm sending you a link, okay? In the chat here. Oh, I'm excited. Okay. And it's a song that's sampled that. Okay, let's play it.
Starting point is 01:24:13 Let's kick it. Cam, cancel your 8 o'clock, okay? You're going to be with us for a little while here. Okay. Oh, I have to turn up the volume. I got till 8.30. I got time. Indeed. little while here okay oh i have to turn up the volume i got till 8 30 indeed this song would have been qualified would have qualified as well okay
Starting point is 01:24:39 see they're they're paying respects to the Spanish quality of the sweet Judy Blue. That was Cypress Hill, by the way. Yeah, with Pitbull. And Mark Anthony. And Mark Anthony. Mark Anthony. Wow. Is that right?
Starting point is 01:24:54 Not Mark Anthony. Mark Anthony. Okay, that's another guy. Okay. Okay, I'm excited for the- Wait, when was that? Yeah, what year was that, Stu? Do you know?
Starting point is 01:25:05 I don't know. I just remembered it. Now, listen. Here's what we're going to talk about next, folks. 2010, I think. This next song... This next song... Good answer.
Starting point is 01:25:15 This next song is one of Cam Gordon's favorite songs. This is one of Cameron's favorite songs that we're about to play. This is a song that is one of his guilty pleasures and a song that I've known him so long that I, I remember him liking this song. So when you guys think about cam and all of his sort of, uh,
Starting point is 01:25:33 uh, completely ignored gimmick where he listens to songs that were completely ignored all the time. This was a song that he loved that was not completely ignored at all. This was quite a hit. Yes. And, uh,
Starting point is 01:25:44 definitely showcases the real Cam and his real music taste, not this hipster bullshit that he's peddling every week on this show. This is the real Cam and the real music that he really grew up
Starting point is 01:25:59 obsessed with. This is one of his favorite all-time songs. I chose it too. I knew it. I have like a similar sound pack. You can tag team it. That's okay. But they got You can tag team it. This song taught me what C'est la vie meant C'est la vie, c'est la vie, c'est la vie Cam, is that one of your all-time favorite songs?
Starting point is 01:27:19 Yes, and I will say that The artist, Robbie Neville, somehow when I was a kid, I remember mixing him up with both Robbie Dupree and with Aaron Neville. Yeah, I remember you thinking that Robbie Neville was the other Neville brother. It was like Robbie and Aaron Neville. Yeah, or like, yeah, like he was sort of just one of the guys. This is like a solo track. Clearly not. No, this is Robbie a solo track clearly yeah no um this is robbie neville say lovey good song holds up still cool it kind of has a nile rogers mid 80s to late 80s sort of uh production sound i don't know if he produced the song but it certainly
Starting point is 01:27:58 has that uh vibe to it of one of his hits uh Here's some fun facts Cam for you. This is the most popular Robbie Neville song that he ever put out. No way. No surprise there. I'm clutching the walls. I can't believe it. I can't name a second. Can I? This song actually went to number two on the chart. And it was kept out of the
Starting point is 01:28:22 number one spot for two consecutive weeks by two different songs. Do you know what those two songs were without looking it up? What year was it? This would have been in 1986 or 87. 87. 87? Somewhere Out There by James Ingram.
Starting point is 01:28:39 By Phil Glasser? No. Love Bites by Def Leppard. Correct answer, Shake You Down by Gregory Abbott. Oh, love that song. And the often mentioned At This Moment by Billy Vera and his beaters. Wow. The one who said the Drifters guy was like a closet homosexual and like a heroin addict.
Starting point is 01:29:00 Muckraker. Incidentally, the song did go to number one in two countries switzerland and canada wow this was this was all over 680 cfdr yeah it was a number one a number one hit in canada how about that how about that now this is actually not robbie neville's biggest money-making song. Interesting. What is his song? He actually had a very successful career as a songwriter, much more than a song artist, I guess. And he wrote the best of both worlds, Hannah Montana.
Starting point is 01:29:41 Wow. The party's just begun. The Cheetah Girls were in this together by the high school musical cast and start something new with zach efron and vanessa hutchins wow this guy was the king of disney gems wow i i am literally staring at the same fun facts on my notepad this is like killing me okay so cam did he miss anything you want to add to this since i will let everybody know girls you let everybody know that you had this jam on your list, and I had a jam, too.
Starting point is 01:30:10 By the way, I knew that Cam had this on his list because when you told me, Cam, pick, I said, was it C'est la vie? And you were like, yep. Yep. Okay, I'm going to let Stu run with this. No, no, go ahead, go ahead. I'm going to come in at the end. I've already reached any excitement that there was to say about this. I'm going to... No, no. Go ahead. I'm going to come in at the end. I've already reached
Starting point is 01:30:25 any excitement that there was to say about this. Mop it up here, Cam. Do some mop-up duty. Fuck. Okay. Smash Mouth? Yeah, he worked with Smash Mouth in 2006 or something. Okay.
Starting point is 01:30:42 I've mentioned I've never seen the TV show Cheers. Wow. Okay. Now... Is've never seen the TV show Cheers. Wow. Okay. Now. Is that the fun fact? Yes. Because that's mind blowing.
Starting point is 01:30:52 Say lovey. You know, that's where Frasier came from. No. Robbie Neville's brother, Alex Neville, was a character actor. It said most famous for notably playing Rebecca Howe's lecherous younger boss, Martin Tealal on Cheers. Yeah, I think the fan remembers that. Is he the British guy?
Starting point is 01:31:11 Yes. Because he was in a lot of shit. I guess so. I know he's no longer with us. He had like a skunk like just one white patch, right? I don't know. He had like dark hair with like a... I remember he played like a proper British gentleman. Like this was a shtick or whatever.
Starting point is 01:31:26 Like having an Avery Haynes type gimmick. I'm working on the same thing here. Okay, I had some of the same... So wait, Robbie Neville's not... He's not one of the Neville brothers? He's not. Well, unless you are friends with Brian Neville, Steve Neville, or Alex Neville,
Starting point is 01:31:41 or Neville Eisenberg. That's the mind game today. Now, Stu's right. I mean, this dude is probably fucking filthy rich. The British guy I'm thinking of is Roger Rees, not your guy. He was the guy I'm thinking of, the proper
Starting point is 01:31:56 British guy from Cheers, who was in a bunch of shit. And Robbie Dupree is not Sail Away. Robbie Dupree is Girls Sail Away. Robbie Dupree is Girls in Cars. He's also... Glide Away? No, Sail...
Starting point is 01:32:11 Why don't we... Steal Away. Steal Away. Steal Away. Steal Away. This is Y'all Rock Part 2. Which, by the way, is a complete copy of the Doobie Brothers. Yeah. Yeah. What a fool believes. Yeah yeah which has the doobie bounce in it that's right that's right
Starting point is 01:32:31 i'm learning so much from you stewart i'm just gonna build a little bit then we'll move on about robbie dupree and the fact that he wrote all that disney stuff you know kind of in the 2000s. He also wrote a lot of songs for people prior to C'est La Vie, including El Debarge, Alice in Moyet, Earth, Wind and Fire. And here we go. Like, this is gonna fucking blow your mind to anthrax needle. And the Pointer Sisters.
Starting point is 01:32:57 Now, the song he wrote for the Pointer Sisters was a song called Just a Little Closer. Probably not familiar with it. Where do you find that song called just a little closer probably not familiar with it where do you find that song incessantly get a little closer don't be extra dry good guess but no i don't find it on fucking we are the world the charity album produced by Robbie I almost called Robbie Dupree on fucking
Starting point is 01:33:28 We Are The World which we just talked about that also featured Shut her down. Tears are not fucking enough. Shut her down. This is over.
Starting point is 01:33:35 Hannah still cares, man. And that. And that. Okay, Canada Kev he just I want to shout out the Pulp Fiction soundtrack he says say love you say the old folks it goes to show you never
Starting point is 01:33:50 can tell I know I butchered that's right yeah that's from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack part of it yes yes oh you know what that's the song that's a that's the song they dance to it right that's yes yeah Johnny T and that's of course that's the song. That's the song they dance to, right? Yes. Yeah. Johnny T.
Starting point is 01:34:06 And that's, of course, that's the late great, one of the founders of rock and roll. Who founded rock and roll and sang that song? Somebody help me. My Ding-a-ling. Who's the My Ding-a-ling guy? Chuck Berry. Chuck fucking Berry.
Starting point is 01:34:21 That's Chuck Berry. Isn't Little Richard the godfather? Well, they share the credit, I guess. But Chuck Berry is the guy who recorded that song, as I recall. So, yes. The My Ding-a-ling guy. He must be rolling over in his grave right now. I called him the My Ding-a-ling guy.
Starting point is 01:34:36 Okay. Cameron, are you ready for your third jam? Bad dude. Bad dude. Yes. Lucy. Bad dude. Bad dude. Yes. I said a Soviet Jewelry A Soviet Jewelry I said a Soviet Jewelry
Starting point is 01:35:15 I said a no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no A shout of yes A Soviet Jewelry I bowed my head Okay, I think Mike knows this song. It's not the Soviet Jewelry I've got on my wrist Okay, I think Mike knows this song. Stu and the UK fam, I feel like, do not. I even have a fun... Can I just start us with a fun fact about it?
Starting point is 01:35:35 Because it's a... So I mentioned Godot, and I mentioned Greg Godovitz, who was my guest earlier this week on Toronto Mic'd. There was a New Year's Eve performance at Maple Leaf Gardens, and the headliner was max webster and the band before max webster was gato and the band before gato was bb gabor
Starting point is 01:35:52 or the act go and that that's who we're hearing right now bb gabor uh toronto base new wave sensation stew's turned off his camera. I think this guy, I think B.B. Gabor was pellet, like they threw stuff at him to get him off the stage. I can't remember what they were throwing. I mean, I'm doing that right now to Kim. I could say, well, this was a song, I mean, Mike, do you remember, like this song
Starting point is 01:36:18 would be on CFNY on like Retro Night? For sure, but I do know that because that new wave didn't really mix in with what Max Webster and Gato were doing. So I think the fans who came to see Max Webster and Gato hated this and literally pelleted them with something. This doesn't sound like some new wave. I think Kim Mitchell had to go on stage and talk to the audience and basically tell them to stop throwing shit at B.B. Gabor. Like, cool them down.
Starting point is 01:36:45 I could see that. It's certainly quirky. Name the song, Nyet Nyet Soviet. So a little Russian. Even though B.B. Gabor was actually Hungarian. Close enough. Hung like a Garian. Close enough.
Starting point is 01:37:01 Like the Garys. Like the famous Gabor. Not just Garys, like both of them. Zsa Zsa Gabor jaja gabor and eva gabor well that that's a good segue because the name bb gabor was actually he took two famous people and mashed them together almost like kind of a marilyn manson type gimmick right jaja gabor famous hungarian was one the other was bb king bb king bb king's hungarian there was BB King. BB King's Hungarian? In his own way. You know who is Hungarian?
Starting point is 01:37:33 I tried to do like the geography section. Tell me, darling. Tell me, darling. Tell me, darling. Yeah, the two most famous ones I would say would be Harry Houdini. Wow. Is Hungarian? Hungarian.
Starting point is 01:37:43 And also Bela Lugosi. He's dead. Now, I thought those were good because I feel like we both heard Harry Houdini by Con Can and Bela Lugosi's dead by Bauhaus on Pandemic Fridays. I think you're right. Of course, who can forget
Starting point is 01:37:53 Hungarian man frozen dinners? I was going to say, I'm feeling kind of hungry myself. So we got to get this going. Now, Bibi Gabor has, he's taken home some hardware, if you can believe it award-winning artist mike probably again mike might be the only one who's familiar with this the you know awards i'm sure david marsden who just turned 82 like three days ago he invented the you knows
Starting point is 01:38:18 yeah so they were the predecessor for the casby awards handed out by cfny bb gabor took home the first ever male vocalist of the year at the first ever you know awards that's amazing that's a fucking i can see pete and geats giving them the award right now yeah and here's the rundown of other winners that year female vocalist was carol pope of rough trade oh my god yes group of the year teenage head hamilton zone wow single of the year was Martha and the Muffins, Echo Beach. Worthy recipient, yeah. And Album of the Year, also from Teenage Head, was Frantic City.
Starting point is 01:38:52 Wow. So, B.P. Gabor, I would say this was easily his biggest hit. He did come out with an album called Girls of the Future that had a couple of middling hits after that. Then sort of into the 80s, he moved to Vancouver, tried to retool, actually record an album with Todd Rundgren, who's produced for MOTM. I was going to say Love Junk was produced by Todd Rundgren. Love Junk, by Pursuit of Happiness.
Starting point is 01:39:17 B.P. Gabor recorded album 1985 with Todd Rundgren in Woodstock. So that sort of ties back to C.S.A.Z. It all comes together. Wow. I love this. That almost kind of shelved till years later. Um, so subsequently came out,
Starting point is 01:39:31 um, I think after his death, which we'll get to now, um, God, everyone's like getting murdered or like killing themselves. January 17th, 1990.
Starting point is 01:39:40 Uh, geez, like, you know, over 30 years ago, Gabor's body was found by Toronto police in his apartment. His death was ruled a suicide. He was only
Starting point is 01:39:49 42 years old. Wow. The 42 club. That sucks. B.B. Gabor, Netanyahu, Soviet, sort of a commentary on, I guess, the Cold War was going on at that time in I guess pre-Cold War. I don't know. 1980.
Starting point is 01:40:05 Shout out to Juan, who's always apparently just chilling and cleaning up in the background. He's like always cleaning. Yeah, Cambrio notice. He's a clean freak. I think we've heard that. Although I guess we also record during dinner. Well, also, she just, you know, she keeps him in line.
Starting point is 01:40:21 She's got a good thing going. I'm going to pause to tell everybody listening that on March 11th, which is next Thursday at 5 30 PM Eastern standard time, I'm going to let anyone into the zoom. So not just leave a Fumka who got in there a week early. Anyone can get in the zoom. Just DM me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike or write me an email,
Starting point is 01:40:44 Mike at Toronto Mike and I will send you the Zoom link and we could have a bunch of FOTMs in here thank you do you have anything more
Starting point is 01:40:54 you want to say about B.B. Gabor I know Stu's not a fan of that song yeah I mean he has a short discography
Starting point is 01:41:01 and his demise was not that fun so no oh you're just you're not talking about me you're talking about Gabor he's got a long discography and his demise was not that fun. You're not talking about me. You're talking about Gabor. He's got a long discography, Stu Stone. Look at that IMDB page. Stu also didn't like...
Starting point is 01:41:13 He also wasn't a fan of the American Hardcore episode that he missed. I like the documentary, but not the episode. I'm just trying to get Stu a little culture. Even though it was critically acclaimed. By who? By the critics. I'm just trying to get Stu a little cult. Even though it was critically acclaimed. By who? By the critics.
Starting point is 01:41:27 Which critics? Well, next week I have Alan Cross on the program. I'm sure he... Well, he seems like a type of guy that would like it. So that's not fair. Right. On my turn, right? Because I gave Stu the final go here.
Starting point is 01:41:40 By the way, can you please tell Alan that I say hello? Well, do you want to record? If you record something, I'll play it for him. He doesn't know me. Oh, well, still, record something because the listeners at Toronto Mic know you, so record something and I'll play it. I know Brother Bill's going to...
Starting point is 01:41:53 I wouldn't mind because I really love him. Yeah, do it because... Yeah, let's do it. I'm actually considering... Like I'm in love with him. I'm going to crowdsource this episode of Alan Cross on Toronto Mic. No, like I'm in love with him. I'm going to crowdsource this episode of Alan Cross on Toronto Mic'd. No, like I'm in love with him.
Starting point is 01:42:08 Like romantically? Yes. You know, he's from Winnipeg too I think. That's why. Like Randy Bachman or Bachman, I don't know. Yeah, record something for him. That would be fun, my friend. Remember when Sammy
Starting point is 01:42:24 Cone like went hard at Chantel Crippi? That was uncalled for. You want to hear something fun? I actually reached out to Rain Maida to ask him to come on Humble and Fred to do a hit because he's promoting something and he won't do it because
Starting point is 01:42:39 he's in LA and it's too early for him to do Humble and Fred. Do they live there? He's there. Does he. and it's too early for him to do Humbling. Did they live there? He's there. Does he want to hang with me? He did ask, like, do I know any, like, Torontonians in L.A. he could hang with during this pandemic? And I said, yes.
Starting point is 01:42:57 I'm very clumsy. Hey, there is an FOTM from that band, but his name is Jeremy. Okay, let's kick out the, remember the early days of Pandemic Friday when Jeremy Taggart was like a character? Yeah, he got feisty on Twitter. I miss that stuff there. He's been to
Starting point is 01:43:17 Twitter can office. Him and Jonathan Torrens came by to do a CFL live show. Wow. I know that's also critically acclaimed, but a commercial bomb, as I understand. Yeah. It was co-hosted by this guy, Max, who went on to work for the Wii organization.
Starting point is 01:43:33 Oh, I thought it was going to be Max Kerman, who went on to work for the RFL. I thought it was going to be Max and Chucky from My Pet Monster. Or Max and Me. Remember the big McDonald's infomercial? Yeah, again, wrong again, Mike. It's definitely Mac and Me, not Max and Me. Remember the big McDonald's infomercial? Yeah, again, wrong again, Mike. It's definitely Mac and Me, not Max and Me.
Starting point is 01:43:50 Jesus, man. There was a Steve Smith show. It's a fucking amateur. Let me be wrong again. What the fuck is happening over here? Let me be wrong again. Steve Smith. Lame stream media.
Starting point is 01:43:58 On CHCH, there was a great Steve Smith show called Max and Me. Does anyone else remember this? It definitely was not Mac and Me, though. Pre-Red Green. He traded for Dave Mansey. He scored his own net.
Starting point is 01:44:12 Steve Smith did. He banked it off at Grand Fierce Gate, as I recall. And Steve Smith, I think, was born in Scotland. He was born in Scotland, right? He was one of the great Scottish hockey players. Yeah, I feel like he was born in Scotland. Yeah, I think you're right.
Starting point is 01:44:28 Rowdy Roddy Piper. Him too. Stop the music! Stop the rock and roll. Me and Max is the name of... Not Max and me. It's me and Max. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:44:36 You're thinking of the outside chance of Maximilian Glick. Yes, okay. Let's keep doing Max things. Actually, what I'm going to do is I'm going to play my third jam. Here it is. What's the non-English in this song?
Starting point is 01:44:50 Stay tuned. Stay tuned. You've got to let me know Should I stay or should I go? If you say that you are mine I'll be here till the end of time So you've got to let me know Should I stay or should I go? It's always tease, tease, tease You're happy when I'm on my knees
Starting point is 01:45:31 One day it's fine and next it's black So if you want me off your back Well come on and let me know Should I stay or should I go? Should I stay or should I go now? Should I stay or should I go now? If I go there will be trouble And if I stay it will be double So come on and let me know So it's coming soon, okay?
Starting point is 01:46:12 It's actually this part, I think, the backing. Listen closely. You hear that? You hear that? The backing vocals by... It's Joe Strummer and Eli. What is his last name? I have a note here somewhere. Joe Eli.
Starting point is 01:46:36 So they... Eli, I guess. Joe Eli. Okay, so the Spanish backing vocals. I have a little note on this. On the spur of the moment, they were going to do these backing vocals in Spanish. They have a little note on this. On the spur of the moment, they were going to do these backing vocals in Spanish.
Starting point is 01:46:48 They needed a translator, so Eddie Garcia, the tape operator, called his mother in Brooklyn Heights and read her the lyrics over the phone, and she translated them. But Eddie and his mom are Ecuadorian, so it's Ecuadorian Spanish that Joe Strummer and Joe Ellie are
Starting point is 01:47:03 singing on the backing vocals. What are they saying? What does it translate to? I'll tell you more fun facts while VP of Sales looks up exactly what's being translated in the background there, but there's a lot of Spanish in this song. No me molesta.
Starting point is 01:47:22 Doesn't bother me. Thank you, new VP of Sales, Lieve Femke. Perfect, perfect. Okay, so chime in anytime with the Spanish authority here. But I have some fun facts about this great Clash jam. So let's see here. Mick Jones is on lead vocals. It was a double A-sided single. And the other side of this single was Straight to Hell,
Starting point is 01:47:48 which of course is now most famous for being like the start of the MIA song. MIA. Yeah. Paper Planes. Which my daughter loved. And then I had to blow her mind by playing Straight to Hell for her. So this song, Should I Stay or Should I Go slash Straight to Hell,
Starting point is 01:48:04 it did get on the billboard hot 100 but it didn't actually meet it didn't didn't reach the top 40 so but yeah there's um there's definitely spanish on this and here's a little fun fact too is that uh there's a word in spanish yes i thought we almost i almost chose that just to piss you off. Yeah, we almost did that. Can I just buddy in and do my inner stew? What kind of song is this? One line in Spanish. Yeah, it's pretty awful.
Starting point is 01:48:35 I agree. Holy shit. I agree. I think you're right. I think Mike is a disgrace. No, he's not. How many fucking Russian words in that The night he went too far. I think you're right. I think Mike is a disgrace. No. No, he's not. It qualifies.
Starting point is 01:48:47 How many fucking Russian words in that goddamn B.B. Gabor shitstorm? Also, another song. Okay, now the gloves are off. So let these two eat each other, and that leaves a winner. Because terrible selections. All that matters is that the song contains a language other than English. I mean, pretty awful.
Starting point is 01:49:10 Stuart, Stuart, I just signed. Yes, Cameron. Yes, Charles Cameron Gordon. You can shit all over. The host of the show is paying for the bandwidth. I'll remind you. You fucking loved We Heard Tears Are Not Enough
Starting point is 01:49:28 I did, I did love that for two lyrics of French the real VP of sales but that's different so Joe's background vocals are to this indecision's bugging me those were lead vocals if you don't, yes, and the background is in Spanish
Starting point is 01:49:44 if you don't want me, set the background is in Spanish. If you don't want me, set me free. Exactly whom I'm supposed to be. Don't you know which clothes even fit me? Come on and let me know. Should I cool it or should I blow? Blow what?
Starting point is 01:49:59 All that's repeated back in Spanish. This song's full of fucking Spanish. Yeah, it's terrible. And also his last selection, also his last selection also, which was like a Crosby, Stills and Nash Young where it was like mumbling. It wasn't even Spanish.
Starting point is 01:50:17 Do you know how easy it would be for me to pick fucking Rico Suave by Gerardo? You should have. That would have been a great pick. I would have loved to have heard Rico Suave. I'm going to be his advocate. I'm going to go to bat for Mike here. I do enjoy the fact he's
Starting point is 01:50:32 chosen two songs that we've all heard millions of times. They're probably not aware that they had different language. He's trying to give you guys a bit of culture. Are you telling me, Ken, that you wouldn't have wanted to hear? You don't point at me. Are you telling me that you wouldn't have wanted to hear? You don't point at me. Are you telling me that you wouldn't have wanted to hear Gerardo Rico Suave? Frankly, I don't.
Starting point is 01:50:53 I don't need to hear that. We don't need to hear that. That's a fantastic song. We don't need to hear it again. We all know it's fucking famous. We could have also heard Menta Rosa. Another great song. We could have heard the fucking Macarena.
Starting point is 01:51:03 But you know what? No one wants to hear that shit. I'm picking songs, like the great Cam Gordon just said. I'm picking songs that are primarily in English that people have heard hundreds of fucking times. I actually want to substitute my next song with Rico Suave.
Starting point is 01:51:18 Fuck my next pick. I'd rather listen to Rico Suave than my next pick. Just out of spite. Well, unfortunately, you don't control the boards. You can see it right there. That man, he plays the music here. Are you being serious? Because I'll go to YouTube and play your Rico Suave
Starting point is 01:51:34 if you want. I think you should. I would like to forego my next pick and play Rico Suave in a move that has never happened in the history of this show. 51 weeks in just to spite you guys. And I'm going to dedicate it to Juan. I'm going to dedicate it to Juan.
Starting point is 01:51:50 Juan is going to dance up a storm to this one. Rico. Suave. Rico. Suave Suave Rico Suave Seguro que han oido que yo soy educado Soy un caballerito, un chico, un imputado Un joven responsable y siempre bien vestido
Starting point is 01:52:18 Yo no se quien ha mentido I don't drink or smoke and into dope What's I know coke? You ask me how do I do it? I coke! My only addiction do I do it I coke My only addiction has to do with a female species I eat them raw like sushi No me gusta These lyrics, these fucking lyrics
Starting point is 01:52:32 Eat them like sushi Alright, do you have any fun facts? This guy's a bad motherfucker This song is actually called Rico Suave It's a 1990s single by ecuadorian rapper and singer gerardo from his album a mo ritmo now the track actually went to number seven on the billboard hot 100. how about that okay number two on the hot rap singles chart how about that how about that stew are those your children? What's going on?
Starting point is 01:53:06 It's not my kids. It's not mine. How about this? On the 100 greatest songs of the 90s countdown. Number 100. Ridiculous. On the 100 greatest one-hit wonders, number nine. How about that? It contains a sample of Give It Up or Turn It Aloose by James Brown.
Starting point is 01:53:31 Good track. We just heard it on 1236. I'm really happy that we're listening to this. Gerardo actually went on to have quite a prolific career as an A&R and launched a ton of big acts, by the way. I'd love to tell you all about it. He definitely did big things in the music business. I think he's responsible.
Starting point is 01:53:51 He actually is the one who signed Enrique Iglesias. He signed Bubba Sparks. It had nothing to do with his father. He signed Bubba Sparks. There's a couple other ones. He had a lot of success as a record A&R guy. So predictable, Stu. What a fucking predictable jam.
Starting point is 01:54:10 I'm going deep. I'm working. I'm going through the crates. GFY. This is a great song. I'm happy that it replaced Arcade Fire Reflector, which was my original pick in this slot. Which contains some French and a fun fact that David Bowie sang on the track,
Starting point is 01:54:28 which maybe people didn't know. I don't know. They did a fashion, some fashion special together, I remember, Bowie with Arcade Fire. Like fashion cares. Yeah, something like that. Gerardo Rico Suave, let it be known, the first time there's ever been a replacement jam in the middle of
Starting point is 01:54:45 an episode, and I did it despite Mike and despite Cam, and I dedicated to Liva Fanta. So, sorry, I thought this was like a work that you had chosen this, you were just pretending like... No, I didn't choose this. I swapped it in because I'm a real man. This happened on the fly, Cam. This is like...
Starting point is 01:55:01 Wow. I would have gone Minuto. I would have gone Minuto. I would have gone Menudo. I would have gone La Isla Bonita had I looked at the chat instead. I should have done that. But Rico Suave, just to spite Mike and his awful picks this week. Well, Cam, can I just kick out your fucking final jam here?
Starting point is 01:55:17 Yeah, this turd in the basement or in this condo with the rat out of the bag, but sure. Oh, great one. That's a great one, Cam. My bad. You had a great showing this week for the most part.
Starting point is 01:55:33 You too. Shout out to Mike Stafford. There's a Black Eyed Peas remix of this now. This is like Leave FM Pen 1 jam. You could almost lumbotan this. For sure.
Starting point is 01:56:16 I figure like Ace of Base could have done a cover of this. I believe that. Breezy. Spanish love of mine. Why don't we just start talking? La Isla Bonita by Madonna. The Beautiful Island. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:56:36 What a jam. What an album this was. This was from the album True Blue. When you think of the five singles on this, La Isla Bonita that we're hearing now, Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, the title track True Blue, and maybe my favorite Madonna song of all time,
Starting point is 01:56:54 Live to Tell. That's mine too! That's mine too! Love it! Oh my god, I love it! Heartbreaker. What a jam! You know why? Because you guys are younger than me. Because if you were a little older, you'd pick Holiday. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:57:09 We know the Holiday rap. Well, Mike called this out today. I found this hard to believe, but I did go back and check the tapes. It's true. The first time we've heard a Madonna song on Pandemic Fridays. Yeah. You believe it? That's true. I was thinking, what big artists have we
Starting point is 01:57:25 omitted? Like, just haven't been kicked out? Madonna's top? Menudo. Menudo. Name a Menudo song, quick. Yeah. Well, it's Bebe Gabor, but no. I think Madonna might be the biggest artist that has yet to be, wasn't played until the 51st week. Is that
Starting point is 01:57:41 true? That doesn't sound right. Well, which part? That it's a big act or that it hasn't been played? No, that we haven't played it. Like, didn't we play her like song from Vision Quest? Check the Google Doc. Check the Google Doc.
Starting point is 01:57:52 The great Tyler Campbell maintains it meticulously. Now, before we talk a bit more about Madonna, I'm going to get like one of those whistles that goes, like for the geography segment.
Starting point is 01:58:04 Okay? So Madonna, I think, is generally known while she did you know what's discovered in new york um she's actually from detroit area yeah and specifically from bay city so that's a city in bay county in the u.s state of michigan it's located near the base of saginaw Bay on Lake Huron. Couple of fun facts and some famous residents of Bay City. The Bay City Rollers. Kid Rock. The Bay City Rollers. A Scottish band was named
Starting point is 01:58:34 after the city if the band randomly threw a dart at a map. Wow. Wow. I don't know if that's true or not. That sounds like bullshit honestly. My mom was a big Bay City Rollers gal. Oh, no, not like huge. I think we've heard the Bay City Rollers probably on the boy bands episode.
Starting point is 01:58:53 I don't remember if we did. S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y. That's right. Famous residents. There's a bunch of names on Wikipedia from Bay city. I didn't recognize most of them except for two fellas that Stu and I know very well. Richard and Scott Rex Steiner. Known more generally as the Steiner brothers, Rick and Scott Steiner,
Starting point is 01:59:19 also from Bay city, hometown of Madonna. Any chance that we can hear his little live to tell? Well, I just want to clarify something. We have not kicked out any Bay City rollers on Pandemic Fridays. Well, I think that, can we dedicate Live to Tell to them? Well, when the, yeah, you can kick it out during our Live episode where we pick songs with Live in the title.
Starting point is 01:59:41 Why do you think we kicked them out? I don't know what you're remembering. 1236 anecdote about the Bay City like someone died with some Yeah, you're conflating your 1236 episodes with your Pandemic Friday, which is strange because you're only on the Pandemic Friday episodes. I know.
Starting point is 01:59:57 That got fucked up. Final comment of Bay City. It has a sister city in Ontario. It's Goderich. Oh, that's on Lake Huron as well. Yeah. And nice sunsets. If you're ever looking for a good sunset in Ontario, get your... And that concludes another...
Starting point is 02:00:13 Geography Corner with Cam. Yeah. La Isla Bonita, big hit. Number one in Canada, UK, France, Germany, and Poland. Only went to number four in the u.s their loss yeah and you know who's also took an l on this michael fucking jackson not the baseball player he used to play for seattle um the king of pop this song was offered to michael jackson first for his album bad he said that. I don't want to record that.
Starting point is 02:00:46 Madonna took it. She took it all the way to the top five in the US and number one around the world. Mike, I just sent you a link. Okay. Let me get my link. No, it's not live to tell. Okay. A few more fun facts
Starting point is 02:01:01 about this song. There was actually a version of Lais La Bonita that came before Madonna's version by Liviefke Femke. Maybe you know this is Masella. You know Masella? A Dutch singer who had a cover version, a version of the song, because the Madonna version existed in 1986,
Starting point is 02:01:18 went to number 25 in the Netherlands. Oh. So we can dig that up maybe. A couple more fun facts. so this again was from the album true blue now madonna did a massive world tour tour true blue including a stop here in toronto that took her and i mike i feel like this is around this like phantom rolling stone concert you and stew were yelling at each other j July 4th, 1987, Madonna played C&E Stadium. Were you
Starting point is 02:01:47 working at C&E Stadium? No, I was 89, 90, and 91. Okay, so a bit before your time, she jam-packed 45,000 fans into the C&E on that tour. Wow. No surprise. She was a monster. Very, very impressive. And you may recall the
Starting point is 02:02:03 video for this song. To be honest i don't oh i do is it black and white it's on a beach for sure like she's rolling around a beach i want to say yeah i'm not sure but apparently if you squint hard enough you can see uh basically a fella who was basically an extra in the video but it was it was actually a young Benicio del Toro. Wow. He appeared in the video as an extra portraying a teenager sitting on a car hood. Wow. Years before he played
Starting point is 02:02:34 Future Oscar winner. Whatever. Yeah. Traffic, I think. Lawyer and all sorts of other stuff. Yeah, for traffic, I think he won it. Hey, just pause for a moment, Cam, because Is this the right jam, Stu? Oh, I hear it. Oh, is this... I hear it.
Starting point is 02:02:52 Is this Micella? Or is this Black Eyed Peas? It's Mamacita by Black Eyed Peas, which is... Music video produced by Adam Rodness from Faking a Murder. Really? Wow. Yes. Okay, that's good. I like that. That's pretty big. Wow. That's pretty big. That is big. Future FOTM Adam Rodness. And you got to mention, if I heard Mark Weisblatt correctly, there was a mention
Starting point is 02:03:19 by somebody. Oh, yeah. I think it was just in a discussion with one of the members of the crew, Howard Stern. Somebody was talking about your documentary there. Yes. It's true. So congrats.
Starting point is 02:03:33 Thanks, man. To be mentioned in Howard Stern is quite the thing. And that's a little teaser to say if you listen to 8-11, episode 8-11
Starting point is 02:03:41 with Mark Weisblatt. In the first half hour, I play a clip of the Howard Stern show from 1997 in which you can hear a very young Mark Weisblatt from I weekly. That is all. Are you guys still there? No,
Starting point is 02:03:59 we are just waiting for you to, you know, finish giving the King his props. So I'm just setting up the after show here. Okay, so Cam Gordon, thank you for your final jam, Madonna. I'm going to kick out my final jam. Cam, you had a very nice showing this week.
Starting point is 02:04:14 Thank you. Much better than Mike's. Here's my final jam. Okay. Wow. I mean, come on. Totally counts. Does it? Yeah, I got my come on. Totally counts. Does it?
Starting point is 02:04:26 Yeah, I got much closer too. The whole chorus. Yeah, but... I still love this song. All right. In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey. Butane in my veins and mouth. I killed the chuggy with the plastic eyeballs.
Starting point is 02:04:51 Spray paint the vegetables, dog food skulls with the beefcake panillos. Kill the headlights and put it in neutral. Stock car flaming with the loser in the cruise control. Babies in Reno with the vitamin D. Got a couple of couches, sleep on the love seat. Someone came saying I'm insane to complain about a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt. Sing it with me. So I'm a loser, baby. I'm a loser, baby. So why don't you kill me?
Starting point is 02:05:36 So I'm a loser, baby. So why don't you kill me So you just heard Beck Hanson say it twice But he says the line in Spanish Soy un perdedor Which means I'm a loser in Spanish So now you know I picked some songs That people don't think about the fact there's actually
Starting point is 02:06:05 a language other than english in these things and i think this is a fine choice mike do you know who did a twitter q a about three hours ago beck beck did a twitter q a yeah for the grammys you may if anyone follows me on twitter you may have seen i gave it a retweet because that's fantastic this song which i'm sure we all love but it had that interesting two lives If anyone follows me on Twitter, you may have seen I gave it a retweet. That's fantastic. This song, which I'm sure we all love, but it had that interesting two lives. Sometimes you hear about a song that had two lives. Beck puts this out completely independently, he puts out Loser,
Starting point is 02:06:39 and some local modern rock stations start playing this thing because it fucking kills. Then it becomes so popular with these local markets that Geffen Records subsidiary, the DGC Records, comes a-knocking and signs them up, signs up Beck, and then they re-release it under DGC. And then the song goes all the way to number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 1994.
Starting point is 02:07:04 I fucking loved it then. I love it now. The video was everywhere. I'm a loser. Beck, I'm Alan Cross. What a unique song. I mean, there's nothing that sounds like this. Yeah, I don't know. It's just one of
Starting point is 02:07:20 a kind, the song. It really is. I think it's age fantastic. More obviously biased because it's sort of a kind, the song. It really is. And yeah, I think it's age fantastic. More obviously biased because it's sort of our generation. But yeah. What say you, Stuart Stone, about Beck's Loser? It's a great song. I mean, when it came out, it was a huge hit. Still holds up.
Starting point is 02:07:38 Good song. I don't know if it's right for this category. I guess it kind of is. I think we look at the category completely differently because I'm looking for songs. I'm just trying to win, I guess. So that's fine. It's apropos for you to pick a song called Loser
Starting point is 02:07:55 as you did lose the episode. But it's a good song, so hard to be upset listening to a great song. I can't wait to play your final jam, Stu, because... I've got a story to tell before you play it. I'll just say that I had it on my list and then I took it off my list. Even though you tried to discredit it at the beginning of the
Starting point is 02:08:14 show, but that's okay. I love this song. Continue. I want to tell you a little story. Can you hear me? Yes, I can. I want you to really pay attention to this story. There's a story in which, you know, a little girl sets these balloons free. There's so many of these balloons that they are mistaken for UFOs.
Starting point is 02:08:37 Would you say there's like 85, 86? I'll get to that in a moment. Causing a general to send pilots to actually investigate. So many people thought it was UFOs. They sent pilots to investigate. Once they got there and they found nothing but balloons, the pilots put on a large show of firepower just for show. The display of force ends up worrying the nations along the border,
Starting point is 02:08:59 and a war starts out between the two countries, all because some little kid decided to release some balloons. Some little brat. Now I'm going to blow your mind shortly, but this is the number one song for this category. I'm Alan Cross, and I'll be on Toronto Mike next week.
Starting point is 02:09:21 Turn it up, FOTM. I mean, you could go right into the other version if you want. We have to because that version is disqualified. So let's kick out the other version. The better version. So the English version of the song actually doesn't translate to the story that I told you, Lever Famke. Only the German version really tells that story. song actually doesn't translate to the story that i told you is leave a famka only the german version really tells that story because they translated it sort of in like a way kurt cobain used to write his songs they just made words kind of fit in with the with the same sort of cadence as the german song that's kind of interesting huh very interesting very interesting
Starting point is 02:11:00 anyway can i ask you stew what your my memory is I remember initially I only ever heard the English version. And at some point I heard the German version. And I really like for the rest of my life, I would just reject the English version. Yeah, there's some interesting stats, actually, about the German version is the one that was the big smash hit. And in the German version went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. English version went to number one in Canada only, in Australia and Ireland and the UK, but not in the States. The English version did not do well in the United States.
Starting point is 02:11:33 The German version did. How about that? Wild. I feel like the Canadian charts don't paint a picture of a country that's very tolerant of songs that aren't easily digestible because we saw this with Lombada we saw this with the German version of this song it's almost like we can't handle we need sort of the homogenized version of music all right you ready for the mind blow yeah are you guys ready to have your minds blown? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:12:08 Who's the artist that sings this song? Nina. Kim? Nina. Nina. Nina Cherry. Nina. What if I told you guys?
Starting point is 02:12:16 Nina. Nina. Or Nena. Nena. Nina. We'll call her Nina for the sake of this. Nena. Nina is the name of the band, not the girl.
Starting point is 02:12:28 Nina is the name of the band, not the girl. I think you're thinking of Sade. It's like Sade all over again. Everybody equates this song with a female named Nina. That's Leigh-Erin you're thinking of.
Starting point is 02:12:43 Yeah, you're thinking of Leigh-Erin. Be honest with us, Stu. Come on, that's ridiculous. Everyone knows this woman's name is Nina. No, that's Lee Aaron you're thinking of. Yeah, you're thinking of Lee Aaron. Be honest with us, Stu. Come on, that's ridiculous. Everyone knows this woman's name is Nina. Don't be silly. Come on, stop joking around. This is the 51st pandemic. The girl's name is Gabrielle Kerner. Wow.
Starting point is 02:12:56 Not Nina. AKA Nina. He changed her name to Nina because it's a Sade thing. Where the band became so popular, she just adopted the name. You changed your name to Sue Stone. That's what Alice Cooper did. I mean, you guys are... This is a...
Starting point is 02:13:10 This is a... This is a mind blow. I know you guys are underselling it, but you did not know that Nina was the band name until right now. I didn't know that. I do know that 99 Luftballons
Starting point is 02:13:19 is fucking awesome. And the band's name is Nina. Are you one of the kids singing this chorus here, Stu? The band's name is Nina. I wonder where the yelling children are from. If those aren't your kids. I will say, I heard a lot of kids on this episode. Not one was mine.
Starting point is 02:13:42 I got lots of kids, but none of them were on this episode. I know. There must be kids in like Stu's suite there or something like that. Are there kids nearby, Stu? I don't know. Anyway, Nina. Okay. You want your extra...
Starting point is 02:13:55 Gabrielle Suzanne Kerner. Do you want to kick out your final... Why are you not blown away by that? Well, because Lee Aaron did it. Sade did it. Sade did it. Alice Cooper did it. I know, but you didn't know Sade was the name of the band until I told you, and you were so mind-blown by that.
Starting point is 02:14:14 How are you not equally floored by Nina not being the girl's name? You know why? Because we only know her for one song. I don't think any of us could ever name a second, could we? I feel like she's a one-song person. What do you mean you don't know a second? Are you kidding me? You don't know the second songs? Should I?
Starting point is 02:14:30 Führ und Flam, Eisbrecher. You guys don't know Schallpaten? These are great tunes. Nur Girmatunt. And she sang them all. Wills du mit mir kein? And they're all to the same tune of 99 Left Balloons. By the way, Wills do meet mere guy
Starting point is 02:14:50 is a great... Mids do meet mere guy is a great album. Monster Mash. Okay, you ready for your final line, Bill? Oh, Ian Service has a bird. Yeah, they've got so bored of Stu's fun facts here that they started showing their pets.
Starting point is 02:15:05 Listen, if you guys are going to complain, then I won't tell you about Nürge Trümpft, which is a great song that they had that went all the way to number seven in Germany. Sure, but you're not David Hasselhoff over there. It goes, Nürge Trümpft. Uh-oh. So, Ian Service.
Starting point is 02:15:23 Nürge Trümpft. I almost picked that. You know what was on my short list that it almost was played tonight? Yeah, Die Commissioner by Falco. Yeah, Die. Anyway, D-I-E.
Starting point is 02:15:36 Mike, did you almost pick Dew House by Rhyme State? No, I thought it was too... I thought about it and it didn't last on my list very long. I think it's a bit overrated In honor of American hardcore there is a way to end this song with some punk rock and roll Ska punk Ska punk
Starting point is 02:15:56 Ska pop punk Hardcore punk Definitely not hardcore punk Shout out to Darren Pfeiffer. That sounds like Machine Gun Kelly's new music. Right. Now, ironically, this guy's name really is Len Goldfinger. Is it really?
Starting point is 02:16:43 No. No, but there was a period of time where I would go to, went to like every year i'd go to edge fest for example and i think i accidentally caught goldfinger like four different times just because what was their big song because this wasn't it you're in your bedroom yeah that was that's one they had a bunch of as i recall they had a bunch of cfnyNY radio hits. They had about half a dozen. Did they do Born to Be Down? Think I could get there before now? Local H. Oh, that's Local H. But they have a Ska influence, and I've been, at some point, I'm going to make you guys
Starting point is 02:17:18 do, like, kick out the Ska-influenced James. That will be a Brother Bill episode. You're missing out. Mike, do you remember the song by the band Ash Goldfinger? Of course, yes. I always found it very confusing. That single came out around the same time as the band
Starting point is 02:17:35 Goldfinger came out. Sounded nothing alike, but I think we're on the radio, if not at the exact same time, right around the same time. Well, this was a lot of fun, guys. And that's... How do you say and that in a different language? We need Juan here to help us out.
Starting point is 02:17:56 And that's... So again, next week, anybody can join the Zoom. And I think it would be fun. So if you're an FOTM who wants the link to the Zoom, hit me up and I'll give it to you and it'll be fun next week to have you on there. I can't wait one year of this stuff.
Starting point is 02:18:09 You know what I think next week? I was thinking, yeah, right, one week, one year. I think we need a light and breezy category for next week because we'll have some FOTMs on the Zoom.
Starting point is 02:18:18 I think because it's our episode before St. Paddy's Day, I think we should do like Irish jams or I think St. Paddy's Day, I think we should do like Irish jams or I think St. Paddy's Day jams next week. Just like bar jams. No, St. Paddy's Day jams. You know, there's a great Dublin band called the Pogues I want to kick out.
Starting point is 02:18:39 Oh, you prick. You're going down there again. This sounds like a really shitty episode. Oh. I'm going to really shitty episode. Oh. I'm going to pull rank on this one. Okay, do you want to do it? Do you want to do this? Can I play?
Starting point is 02:18:52 Am I allowed to play Disco Tech? Get Alter back? You can play anything you want, but yeah, we'll get Alter back. That's exactly what we'll do. We'll kick out the, yeah, the St. Paddy's Day Jams. You can explain as you will.
Starting point is 02:19:06 And that. And that. And that. And that. Somebody says 12 Pogue songs. Yeah, if that's what it requires, that's what we'll do. And that. And that. Brings us to the end of our 812th show.
Starting point is 02:19:23 And our 52nd Pandemic Friday. Our 51st. It's next week. Yeah, it's next week. That was our 51st Pandemic Friday. And you can follow me on Twitter. I'm at Toronto Mike. Stu is at...
