I'm Mike from
torontomike.com and here's
another installment of
the FOTM KOTJ
Holiday Edition.
That's right. FOTMs
like you took 30
to 60 seconds of their lives to record themselves talking about a holiday jam that they love. And then they sent that audio file to mike at torontomike.com.
And if you'd like to be a part of the next holiday edition of FOTMKOTJ, it's not too late.
Assuming you're listening to this in early December, send me your favorite holiday jam and you'll be a part of that episode.
Hello, fellow FOTMs.
It's your friend, Brian Dunn. You may not be familiar with my voice, but you've
probably heard me referenced in many Toronto Mic'd episodes as the guy who likes Barenaked Ladies.
And yeah, I do. I love B&L. I've seen so many of their shows, been to thousands of concerts,
and of course, have their holiday album. But you know what? Their holiday album is not my choice for my favorite holiday song.
That title goes to Bing Crosby, the OG of Christmas music.
And his song, It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.
See, his whole Merry Christmas album has been special to me my whole life.
I even have a Japanese pressing of his Christmas album that I got when I lived in Korea.
Whenever I'm having a bad day, even if it's in the summer or on a rainy day or a sunny day,
I'll listen to that Christmas album and it'll lift my spirits.
So when it's Christmas time, man, all bets are off. I'm listening to that thing
all the time. Now, since this is a very special song to me, I also wake up to that song every
morning, but I listened to Michael Bublé's version in the morning because it has a very
nice transitional. You're sleeping. Now you're awake. Beginning to it. So that's how I've been waking up for the past, I don't know, year and a half.
Yeah, if you ever meet me in person, I'm kind of a big Christmas guy.
So Christmas music's just around all the time.
I could talk about Christmas music for hours.
But, you know, just for the sake of this special, we're going to go with Bing Crosby,
It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all my FOTMs and to that Toronto Mike guy.
You're pretty great. Goodbye.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you go
Take a look in the five and ten
Glisten and once again
With candy canes and silver lanes aglow
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Toys in every store
But the prettiest sight to see
Is the holly that will be
On your old front door
A pair of hop-along boots
And a pistol that shoots
Is the wish of Bonnie and Ben
Dolls that will talk
And will go for a walk
Is the hope of Janice and Jen. And Mom and Dad
can hardly wait for school to start again. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
everywhere you go. There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, the sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Soon the bells will start, and the thing that'll make them ring Is the carol that you sing
Right within your heart It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Toys in every store
But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be on your own front door.
Sure it's Christmas once more. Hey, Toronto Mike. Once more
Hey Toronto Mike
For the FOTM favourite holiday song show
Good King Wenceslas arranged and performed by the Sky Diggers
is my choice
I picked this song because I always feel the same way about it
that Blue Rodeo's Basil Domovan feels
It doesn't feel like Christmas
until he hears the Sky Diggers sing this song.
It's done with such honesty
that I crank it up every time they perform it.
And if you do like this and want to hear more
Andy Mays and the Sky Diggers,
please tune in to episode 289 of Toronto Mic'd.
He has Andy as a special guest.
Happy holidays.
Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone The moon that night
Though the frost
Was cruel
When a poor man
Came in sight
Gathering winter fuel
Hither page and stand by me
If thou know'st it telling
Yonder peasant hill is he
Where and what his dwelling
Sire he lives a goodly kins
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By St. Agnes' fountain
Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine, I'll sither
Thou and I will see Him dine
When we bear them sither
Page and one are forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude winds, wild the men, and the bitter weather guitar solo
Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fills my heart, I know not how
I can go no longer
Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly.
Thou shalt find the winter's rage, breeze thy bloodless coldly.
In his master's steps he trod, where the snow they tinted. He was in the very sod, which the saint had printed.
Therefore women, men be sure, look for rank possessing. Hey everyone, Andy Pandy here, and you are listening to Funky Funky Christmas by the
New Kids on the Block.
you are listening to Funky Funky Christmas by the New Kids on the Block. First of all,
I apologize to everyone who now feels violated for being subjected to this mess of a song.
I do realize that it is truly terrible and incredibly cheesy and for some unknown reason one of the New Kids speaks with a bad British accent in part of it despite the entire
group being from Boston but as horrible as it is it still makes me smile. Anyway I hope you all have
a funky funky Christmas and happy holidays to all the FOTMs out there. Yo, hey where's that beat from? Check it out! Hey yo, that's my whole boys, New Kids on the Block!
Hey, this is K-Funky!
Have a funky, funky Christmas
Have a funky, funky Christmas
Have a funky, funky Christmas New kids on the block
It's Christmas time
We're gonna celebrate with a rhyme
Danny D, are you ready?
Ready as a lion
Steady
You know Joey Joe's ready
Jordan and John
Yeah!
Come on!
We got a funky, funky Christmas going on Have a funky, funky Christmas
Have a funky, funky Christmas
Funky Christmas and a funky new year, I swear.
We got ourselves a party here.
Girls on the floor, no side posse at the door.
Should I stop? Nah. Cool, here's more.
Of this song, a funky Christmas melody.
Cause Jordan K feels oh so Christmasy.
Throw your hands in the air.
No pause.
Kick the ballistics, Santa Claus.
Have a funky, funky Christmas.
Have a funky, funky Christmas.
Sneaking downstairs on Christmas Eve,
I saw a sight that you just wouldn't believe
St. Nick by the fireplace
Dusting up his booty with a frown on his face
He said hey, I said what, he said you, I said what
He said you left the fire burning and I burnt my box
So now I've learned, you've got to turn
The fireplace down so Santa won't get burned
Have a funky, funky Christmas.
Have a funky, funky Christmas.
Yo, MC Sam, you didn't know my boy Donnie could play percussion, did you?
I didn't have a clue.
Yeah, get busy, Donnie.
Yeah.
Uh-huh.
Hey, check this out, little string! Go ahead!
Ho ho ho ho ho
Ho ho ho ho ho
Ho ho ho ho ho

It's goin', I'm showin', fresh rhymes I'm throwin' It's snowin' another party of the year is going. I'm showing fresh rhymes.
I'm throwing.
It's snowing outside, but we ho, ho, ho.
Santa's on the way.
Sleigh bells are ringing.
Swinging.
Everybody starts singing.
Have a funky, funky Christmas.
Have a funky, funky Christmas It's Christmas, can you swing this?

This is the MC Santa Claus and my elf, Little Tray.
Yeah, Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas.
We're going to kick the ballistics of our Christmas wishes.
Hey, Little Tray, where's my little?
Yo, what's right here?
North Side Posse.
Oh, yes, yes.
Yeah, Lou.
Oh, Funky Christmas.
Warwick Starn.
Oh, such a nice boy.
Yeah, Posse B.
Oh, Biscuit, Andre, Butch, Johnny right there.
Hog Scott.
Oh, he's a great boy. Yo, the Deaf Duo. Oh, your friendly neighborhood rock enthusiast and three-time guest on your
podcast.
I haven't listened to every single one of your shows, so I'm not sure if you've ever
done one of your patented deep dives as to whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not.
It totally is.
But I know you know that.
One of the holiday songs in that classic movie is none other
than Christmas in Hollis. Now, I know you're partial to Chuck D and Public Enemy, but in my
opinion, there is no bigger goat of Golden Age rap than Run, DMC, and of course, Jam Master Jay.
Does Public Enemy even have a Christmas song? I didn't think so. Christmas in Hollis is funky and playful in its
rhyming without getting overly cheesy. And that video? Rudolph and Frosty can take a backseat to
Run DMC in my house. It was December 24th on Hollis Avenue in the dark
When I seen a man chillin' with his dog in the park
I approached him very slowly with my heart full of fear.
Looked at his dog, oh my God, oh it'll rain soon.
My man, I was killing cold, the man had a beard.
Had a bag full of 30, 12 o'clock at night.
So I turned my head a second and the man was gone.
Pretty much the driver's wife is back dead on the lawn.
I picked the wallet up and then I took a pause.
Took out the license and it called, said Santa Claus
A million dollars in it called hundreds of G's
Another by a boat, magic call was E
But I never feel for Santa, cause that ain't right
So I was going home to mail it back to him that night
But when I got home I bought, cause under the tree
Was a letter from Santa and the door was for me It's Christmas time in Hollis, Queens
Moms cooking chicken in collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright in the
fireplace is the yule log beneath the mistletoe as we drink eggnog the rhymes that you hear are
the rhymes of jarrows like each and every year we bust christmas carols We'll be right back. It's all about the time is now. The place is here and the whole wide world is filled with cheer.
My name is DMC with the mic in my hand and I'm chilling and cooling just like a snowman.
So open your eyes, lend us an ear.
We want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. YYZ Gord here.
Happy holidays to you and all the other FOTM.
Wanted to check in with one of my favorite holiday jams.
It's Maren Caddell, The Cat Carol.
Pretty non-traditional Christmas song
that was first introduced to me by Alan Cross
and it's become part of my regular Christmas playlist since then.
And I hope the other FOTM enjoy this rather sad story,
but sung really great by Erin Goodell. Take care.
The cat wanted into the warm, warm house, but no one would let the cat in.
It was cold outside on Christmas Eve. She meowed and meowed by the door.
She was not let into the warm, warm house, and her tiny cries were ignored.
It was a blizzard now, the worst of the year, there was no place for her to hide.
There was no place for her to hide Just then a poor little mouse crept by
He had lost his way in the snow
He was on his last legs and was almost froze
The cat lifted him with her paw
She said, poor mouse, do not be afraid
Because this is Christmas Eve.
On this freezing night, we both need a friend. I won't hurt you, stay by my side.
She dug a small hole in an icy drift. This is where they would spend the night.
She curled herself round her helpless friend, protecting him from the cold. When Santa came by near the end of the night
The reindeer started to cry
They found the cat lying there in the snow
And they could see that she had died
They lifted her up from the frozen ground
And placed her into the sleigh
It was then they saw the little mouse wrapped up
She'd kept him warm in her fur
Oh, thank you, santa for finding us dear cat wake up we are
saved i'm sorry mouse but your friend has died there's nothing more we can do.
On Christmas Eve, she gave you her life, the greatest gift of them all.
Santa lifted her up into the night sky and laid her to rest among the stars.
Dear mouse, don't cry, you are not alone. You will see your friend every year. Each Christmas a cat constellation will shine to remind us that her love's still here. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Every Christmas morning as a kid, my dad would wake me up by playing Lou Rawls' Merry Christmas Ho Ho Ho.
The first cut on that album is Little Drummer Boy.
And so the opening notes of that are what I really associate with Christmas, but nobody wants to hear Little Drummer Boy. And so the opening notes of that are what I really
associate with Christmas.
But nobody wants to hear Little Drummer Boy.
So instead, here's Good Time Christmas by
the great Lew Rawls.
I'm coming home this Christmas, a good time

Hey everyone, this is Steve Leggett.
Whenever Christmas comes around, I always like to hear carol the bells.
Every time I hear it, I think I can see icicles and snowflakes falling down.
Christmas is here.
Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say throw cares away.
Christmas is here, bringing good cheer to young and old.
Big and the bold
Ding dong ding dong
That is their song
With joyful ring-dong caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From everywhere
Filling the air
Oh holly-pong
Raising the sound
How hell it dings
How their tones
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Ding ding ding ding
Merry merry merry merry Christmas
Ding ding ding ding
Merry merry merry merry Christmas Ding, merry, merry, merry Christmas
What on this end, all without end
Their joyful tone to every home
Quick, call the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say, throw cares away
Christmas is here, bringing good cheer
To young and old, weak and the bold
Ding dong, ding dong, that is their song
Big joyful ring, don't care a ling
One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere, wielding the air Oh, holy power, raising the sound That is their song with joyful ring-dong caroling One seems to hear words of good cheer from everywhere
Willing the air, oh holy power
Raising the sound, oh hear that dandy-ar-lyar tone
Gently they ring while people sing songs of good cheer
Christmas is here, merry merry merry merry Christmas
Merry merry merry merry Christmas
Toad on the sand, toad without end
Their joyful tone to every home
Black carpet bells, sweet silver bells All seem to say throw kids away Happy holidays to all the FOTMs.
It's Moose Grumpy.
Thanks, Mike, for putting together this celebration of songs.
My pick for holiday song is Mary's Boy Child by Boney M.
Growing up, it was just my mom and myself.
Decorating our tree was always a special night for the two of us.
We didn't have many Christmas albums to play back in those days,
but we both loved the Boney M album.
Putting on the album meant it was a special night,
and whenever I hear this song, it brings a smile to remember those special nights. Now as a mom I make sure to include
this song in the mix when we decorate our tree. To everyone, Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad,
Happy Hanukkah, Verola Keer Feast, Joy Noel, and wishing you all a warm and happy holiday season
Joy and Noel, and wishing you all a warm and happy holiday season with your loved ones. For more, because of Christmas Day.
Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible said Mary's boy child
Jesus Christ was born
on Christmas day
Hark now hear
the angels sing
a king was born
today
and man will live
forevermore
Because of Christmas Day
Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas Day
Our shepherds watch their flock by night
They see a bright new shining star.
They hear a choir sing a song, the music seem to come from above.
Hark now hear the angels sing, a king was born today.
And man will live forevermore because of Christmas Day. Thank you. For a moment the world was aglow
All the bells rang out there with tears of joy and laughter
People shouted let everyone know
There is hope for all to find peace
Oh my Lord, you sent your Son to save us
Oh my Lord, your very self you gave us
Oh my Lord, that sin may not enslave us
And love may reign once more.
Oh my Lord, when in the crypt they found him.
Oh my Lord, a golden halo found him.
Oh my Lord, they gathered all around him to see him and adore.
This day will live forever.
Oh my Lord
They have begun to doubt you
Oh my Lord
What did they know about you?
Oh my Lord
But they were lost without you
They needed you so bad
Oh my Lord
With the child's adoration
Oh my Lord They with the child's adoration, oh my Lord, with their claim to great jubilation, oh my Lord, and full of admiration, they realized what they had.
Oh my Lord, when you sent yourself to save us, my love Hello and happy holidays everybody.
This is Johnny O and I am bestowing upon you a tune from one of my favorite bands, Fishbone,
with an excellent holiday jam about my all-time favorite holiday movie, It's a Wonderful Life.
Check it out. The angel told me to get his wish On my life was a twisted thing
We're gonna have a good life
We're gonna have a good life
We're gonna have a good life

Take me home! It's a wonderful life. I'm going home. Send me to my great, great, great, great to share a Beach Boys holiday song. There are a lot of fun and kitschy ones to choose from, and I like them all.
But I'm going with my personal fave, a song written and sung by Dennis Wilson for the abandoned 1977 album Merry Christmas from the Beach Boys.
Christmas time isn't easy for everyone, and I feel like this song exemplifies that.
It's dark, heavy, yet comforting and uplifting at the same time, I think.
So pour yourself some eggnog, light a candle, and cuddle up. Here's Morning Christmas by the Beach
Boys. And with that, I'd like to wish you and all friends of Toronto Mike, happy holidays from me,
Beach Boys Girl. Holy, holy, halo glowing, candle burning, Christmas evening. This evening Cold wind blowing
Old man winter
