That stands for Friends of Toronto Mic'd, Kick Out the Jams.
I encourage all of you lurkers to be a part of a future volume of FOTM KOTJ.
It's super easy.
Just whip out your phone, find the part of your phone where you record audio. If you can't find it, just record video. I'll convert it. So send me the audio
file or the video file via email. My address is easy. It's mike at torontomike.com. Email it to me. I'll convert it
to audio if it's video. And if it's audio already, I'll do any little edits that are required.
And I'll put it on a future F-O-T-M-K-O-T-J. These episodes are doing wonders for my psyche during the physical distancing.
Keep them coming.
And now, let's kick out the jams.
We've only just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
We've only begun
Before the rising sun
We fly The sun we fly.
So many roads to choose.
We start out walking and learn to run.
And yet we've just begun. Hi, Mike. It's Bev and Jack Drew
and we heard of your podcast from our son Chris.
Here's our song for Friends of Toronto Mike,
kicking out the jams.
April 2020 is very special for us
because it's our 40th wedding anniversary
and Jack's 70th birthday.
We've postponed our celebration party and are finding other ways to celebrate,
so kicking out the jams comes at a great time.
Our song selection is our first dance song from our wedding 40 years ago.
It's The Carpenters' We've Only Just Begun.
Here's an inspirational verse from this song for our present times.
Working together day to day, together, together.
And when the evening comes, we smile.
So much of life ahead.
We'll find a place where there's room to grow.
And yes, we've just begun.
Thanks, Mike.
Watching the signs along the way. Well, thanks, Mike. Thank you. Together And when the evening comes
We smile
So much of life and it
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, we've just begun We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, we've just begun A CIDADE NO BRASIL First thing I remember, I was lying in my bed
Couldn't have been no more than one or two And I remember there was a radio
Coming from the room next door
And my mother laughed the way some ladies do
When it's late in the evening
And the music's seeping through
The next thing I remember,
I am walking down the street.
I'm feeling all right
with my boys
and with my troops, yeah.
And down along the avenue,
some guys were shooting pool
and I heard the sound
of a cappella blues, yeah.
Singing late in the evening by Paul Simon holds a really special place in my heart for many reasons.
This song will always make me smile. I grew up listening to Paul Simon with my grandpa.
He and I would take these really long road trips together three hours or more and we'd always listen to paul simon this song was my favorite as a child and we'd sing and dance together on
the 400 series highways as i got older and actually picked up on the lyrics i loved it even more
not just because of its undeniable sound of joyfulness, but also the imagery of a late summer evening,
being at a bar and jamming out to amazing tunes.
More recently, I was at a Vampire Weekend concert in June 2019,
which was totally mind-blowing in itself.
But then they did a cover of this song, Late in the Evening,
and I was almost brought to tears.
First thing I remember when you came into my life I said I'm gonna get that girl no matter what I do
Well I guess I've been in love before
Once or twice I've been on the floor
But I've never loved no one the way that I love you
And it was late in the evening
And all the music seeping through Thank you. Days of conflict you've been in
Traces of conscience you don't want to hear.
You hear it now.
You listen and hear a shout.
You missed it.
Taken by conscience or taken by guilt.
You live in the problems you decided to build
You hear it now, you listen
And hear a sound that can't be still
The flame was found
You got it, you got it wrong
When she was new
And used for good
Yeah
Hey Toronto Mike, it's Bruce from Toronto
with a song for Kick Out The Jams.
I don't have a single song that I'd call my all-time favorite,
so I'm just going to pick a song from an artist that I like
and that has a few Toronto Mike-style tangents
to connect it to some other episodes.
In a recent Cam and Stu Covers episode, you made a passing reference to a How Soon Is Now cover
that was included on the Spirit of the Edge Vol. 2 CD. That Amazing Smiths cover was recorded by
one of my all-time favorite bands, Quicksand. Quicksand was in heavy rotation on so much music
shows like Loud and The Wedge back in the 90s, and it was played occasionally on 102.1, but they
never really broke through into the mainstream. They broke up after only a couple
of albums, but the singer, Walter Schreffels, went on to lead a few other bands, including this one.
The band is Rival Schools, and the song I picked is Used for Glue. Thanks, Mike. A sound that can't be still guitar solo The blame was found
You got it, you got it
Wrong when she was new
But wasn't so when she was through
The blame was found
Wrong when she was through, the flame was back. Oh, when she was new, the fire was back.
So when she was through, the flame was back.
Oh, when she was new, the fire was back.
So when she was through.
Yeah. was through Yeah guitar solo So she said,
have I got a little story for you
What you thought was your daddy was nothing but a
Wild new city, home alone in 1813
The real daddy was dying
Sorry I didn't see them
But I'm glad we talked
Oh, I, oh, I'm still alive
I, oh, I'm still alive Oh, I'm still alive
Oh, she walks through
Across a young man's room
She said I'm ready for you
I can't remember anything to this very day
Except love, love
Oh, you know where
Now I can see
I just stay right, I'm still alive I'm still alive
Okay, my favorite song in one minute.
Early 90s, I'm 22 years old, I hear Alive by Pearl Jam for the first time,
and it literally changed
my life. It's the reason I play guitar today. I'm in two bands I play full-time
and when I heard that song I had to know how to play it. I got my roommate at the
time to learn it and play it for me because he played guitar and as soon as I heard him play
it I made him teach me and a couple months later could still not play it but I loved it it was
years before I could even play the solo at the end but to this day it's my favorite song to play
and it's changed my life and there's still Pearl Jam are still my favorite band.
So that's the song that is my favorite of all time, Pearl Jam Alive. I, I'm still alive
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah guitar solo Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah guitar solo guitar solo The whole place is dark
Every light on this side of the town
Suddenly it all went down
Now we'll all be brothers of
The fossil father of the sun
Now we will all be sisters of
The fossil blood
Someone must have set them up
Now they'll be working in the cold gray rock
Now they'll be working in the
hot mill steam
now they'll be working
in the concrete
in the
sirens and the silences
now
all the great set up parts
All at once
start to be
After tonight If you don't want this to be
A secret out of the past
I will resurrect it
I'll have a good go at it.
I'll streak his blood across my being.
Dust my feathers with his hand.
Feel his ghost breathing down my back.
Feel as ghosts breathing down my back I will try
And know whatever I try
I will be gone
But not forever
I will try
And know whatever I try
I will be gone
But not forever
Hey, how you doing? This is Justin Rutledge.
One of my favorite songs of all time is Farewell Transmission
by a songwriter named Jason Molina
who had an outfit called Songs Ohio at first
and then he changed the name of his band A songwriter named Jason Molina who had an outfit called Songs Ohio at first,
and then he changed the name of his band to Magnolia Electric Company.
Sadly, Jason died at 39, but he left some great songs behind for us. This is one of them, Farewell Transmission.
It's kind of like there's definitely a Crazy Horse vibe in here
and you can hear Neil Young's
Tonight's the Night.
But
an unbelievable storyteller, a great
talent, and we
lost him too soon. This is Farewell
Transmission by Songs Ohio. We will be gone, but not forever.
Come on, let's try.
No, whatever we try.
We will be gone But not forever
Real truth about it is
There ain't no end to the desert I'll cross
I've really known it all along

Let me say it, let me say it
Let me pour in the cold
Let me reach, let me be each, the shoes of true fallen.
Let me say it, let me say it, let me crush upon your shadow.
Let me reach, let me be each, for the only innocent. Thank you. Hi Mike, this is Karen Ben in Mississauga, and the song that I want to kick out the jam to is
Orinoco Flow, Sail Away by Enya. 32 years ago, I'm 17 years old and I'm in grade 11. It's Saturday morning and
I turn on the radio. I'm listening to WMJQ Magic 102 in Buffalo New York. I'm listening to all the
monotonous sounding pop hits of the day and then this song comes on and it was like nothing I'd
ever heard before and it totally blew me away.
This is the song that turned me and many other people into lifelong Enya fans.
Now, a lot of people are very quick to mock Enya and her music.
They think it's depressing, overproduced, New Age garbage.
But for me, it's her voice. It's positively angelic.
It's calming and relaxing, and it's definitely
something people need to hear during this very stressful time that we're living in.
Anyway, keep up the good work, Mike. Take care. Bye. The deep sea of clouds, to the island of the moon Carry me along the waves to the land I've never been
Carry me along the waves to the lands I've never seen
We can sail, we can sail with the oar and no couple
We can sail, we can sail, sail away, sail away
We can steal, we can eat, we can drop, we can sail
We can sail, sail the eat, we can drop, we can sell, we can sell.
We can save the body, we can save the body.
We can save, we can save, we can save, we can save.
We can reach, we can reach on the shores of Tripoli.
We can save, we can save, we can save the body.
We can save, we can save, we can save, we can save. Thank you. We can sing. Sail away, sail away, sail away Sail away, sail away, sail away
Sail away, sail away, sail away
Sail away, sail away, sail away
I remember driving down
The ruddy roads late at night
Following the summer moon
Bright as any pair of headlights
I felt the air
on my face
And the night
pressed inside
my palm
A moment
captured in a place
This memory
stays strong
Oh my darling,
oh, my love.
Oh, my darling,
oh, my love.
Oh, my darling,
oh, my love.
The things that we are made of.
The things that we are made of I remember feeling
I'm alive and in no need of saviors
If the past's another country
I'm at the border with my papers
Where is your heart if not inside you?
Where is home or are you lost?
Where is love if not beside you?
I had no answers
But they let me cross
Oh my darling
Oh my love
Oh my darling
Oh my love
Oh my darling
Oh my love
The things that we are made of.
Like the silence of my shadow, when the twilight world is calling. The loneliness that knows me
By the cadence of my walking
The scar upon my elbow
The sound of my own breathing
My reflection in a window
And the way I'm always leaving
Hey, it's Buffalo Kathleen in Maryland again.
My jam is The Things That We Are Made Of by Mary Chapin Carpenter,
the title track from her 2016 album.
I've been a fan of Mary Chapin Carpenter since I was about 13, so it's going on 26 years now.
I love this song because it so delicately captures those fleeting moments of life,
and the line, I remember wishing for some other life than this one I've claimed,
makes me think about things in my life
that I've regretted or wish that I had done differently. Anyway, I just think it's a beautiful
song, and I want to thank all of our health care workers, especially my sister, who is a nurse
working on the front lines. Take care, everybody. Some other life than this one I've claimed
How often have I been convinced
How eagerly I'd make that trade
Then all at once I see your face
In the summer night
In the open door
Dimmer now but not erased
And I know what these are for
Oh my darling
Oh my love
Oh my darling Oh my darling, oh my love Oh my darling, oh my love
Oh my darling, oh my love
Oh my darling, oh my love
Oh my darling, oh my love
Oh my darling, oh my love
Oh my darling, oh my love
The things that we are made of Thank you. If you could return
Don't let it burn
Don't let it fade
I'm sure I've not been rude
But it's just your attitude
It's tearing me apart, it's ruining every day
I swore, I swore I wouldn't be true
And I know so did you
So why are you holding her hand?
Is that the way we stand?
We're lying all the time Was it just a game to you?
But I'm insensitive, you know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger, do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?
Hey Toronto, Mike Garnett, Barnsdale here,
contributor to Down the Stretch podcast,
which we have done many times at your luxurious studios down there by the lake.
One song that always kind of resonates
with me and that I always have to turn up is Linger by the Cranberries. And there's many
reasons for that. For me, it's kind of like the ultimate 80s song. And being that I'm in my mid
50s, I was in college in the 80s. And that was always a song that seemed to come on a lot. And
it resonates with me for many reasons. It just brings
back a lot of good memories on one hand because college was probably three of the best years of
my life. I made a lot of good friends, had some good times and learned a lot. And you know it's
also the words of that song kind of resonate a little bit because while I was in college
the girl I was going out with, who was my first love,
kind of just up and left me for another guy in third year, my third and final year of college.
So she actually passed away two or three years ago. So yeah, Linger by the Cranberries. And
you know, the last thing I guess, with the lead singer Dolores O'Reard and passing away,
it also kind of reminds you of your own mortality.
So that's one of my favorite songs, one that always kind of takes me back,
Linger by the Cranberries. You got me wrapped around your finger Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?
You know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger? Thank you. I want a book that'll make me drunk
Full of freaks and disenfranchised punks
no amount of hate, no load of
junk, no bag of words
no costume trunk
could make me feel the same
way, an inch
an hour, two feet a day
such a milkman
in this most fashionable
way In this most fashionable way There's this fucking man you gotta see
That used to scare the living shit out of me
No robin dog, no cruel insanity
No rock and roll, no Christianity
Makes me feel the same way
An inch an hour, two feet a day
To move the night
With very little else to say
Kick out the jams, the ten of them that I did
I think the first one ever
On the Toronto Mike podcast
So I'm adding this 11th
song. It's a Tragically Hip song. It's a deep, deep cut. It's cut 11 on the album Day for Night.
And the lyrics go, I want a book that'll make me drunk, full of freaks and disenfranchised punks.
It's an inch an hour from Day for Night by Tragically Hip. I love this song. It's an Inch and Hour From Day for Night by Tragically Hip I love this song, it's underrated
I don't even know how many people play it
But it starts off so great
And it's just got such a rockin' beat to it
So if I can add this number 11
To my Kick Out the Jams Top 10
That'd be great, thanks
It's an Inch and Hour
To be a day
To move in life
With very little else to say We'll see you next time. I don't know. Oh! Oh!
Oh!
Yeah! guitar solo When the waves roll up
Over the waters
And the ocean cries
We look to our sons and daughters
To sustain our lives
As if a child could tell us why
That as sure as the sun rises
As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again
In the faces of our children We rise again in the faces of our children.
We rise again in the voices of our song.
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean.
And then he rise again
Hello, my name is Diane Sachs, host of Green Economy Heroes.
One of my favorite songs, especially right now,
is the choir of women physicians singing Rise Again on Voices Rock.
It brings tears to my eyes every time.
We incarnate just to explain our lives
As if a child could tell us why
That as sure as the sunrise
As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again
In the faces of our children We rise again
In the voices of our song
We rise again
In the waves out on the ocean
And then we rise again
We rise again. We rise again in the faces of our children.
We rise again in the voices of our song.
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean. And then we rise again.
And then we rise again.
And that brings us to the end of our 623rd show.
