Okay, because the theme today, for those who don't know, it's Hip Hop.
That's the name that Stu Stone gave this episode.
But to be specific, it's Hip Hop.
I mean, why did you give it such a horrible you made that sound like the way i pitched it to you was an exciting name hip-hop okay let me explain it and then we
can get excited about it so uh it's hip-hop jams from 1980 to 2000 that reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100? Hip-hop.

And there's a jam that qualifies,
and I'm going to play it off the top,
and then I'm going to introduce our special guest,
and we're going to have a little chat about this.
This is a song that would be totally appropriate today
because it's a hip-hop jam that reached the top 20
on the Billboard Hot 100 between that you're used to. I look funny, but yo, I'm making money, see?

you too i want to talk uh wrestling with you someday well i'm an old mark i was at the uh
i was at i was in montreal for the screw job we're in the in montreal i was i was he was the
guy said ring that bell i did bob screwed brett that's true yeah i, he did. Yes, I'm a long-time old mark for wrestling.
That's exciting, man.
That's really, really awesome.
Sadly, though, I don't want to gloss over this whole Humpty Dance thing for a second.
No, bury the lead.
But Shock G, of course, you're speaking of, he passed away, correct?
That's what you were alluding to?

So Bob's here, and I want to hear your thoughts off the top, Stu.
But Bob's here because Bob and I have a similar history.
I even invited the VP of sales because all three of us have a similar history.
We all danced the Humpty dance together.
Yes.
So let's do, we'll start with you and then Bob.
We were all at Wonderland for like a digital underground
concert or something he he did once get busy in a burger king bathroom i think that must be what it
is all right so here do you guys see this of course you can see it because you have eyes but
i pulled this out of my personal mic i got boxes of shit in the closet here and uh this is the 12
inch so my quick quick story is uh and then we'll get to you stew i've
decided to jump ahead of you i hope that's okay but my quick story is uh what was the name of
that record shop at wellesley and young like where the djs would buy their 12 play the record
play the record okay so i was in there in 1990 with my buddy ed and they were playing do what
you like like they were playing the long version of Do What You Like,
and I literally fell in love with Do What You Like,
and I left with this in my hand,
so I picked this up that day.
And then, of course, I had Sex Packets on cassette,
so it was before I had transitioned to CDs.
I got it on cassette.
Anyway, I fucking loved Sex Packets and digital.
I loved the sound.
I loved the whole like concept of like
shock g having alter egos and sticking on his like glasses and his big nose and suddenly he's this
goofy humpty hump who'd be here on this uh this jam right here but i just fucking love digital
underground like they were saying something they were fun now i want to hear from you, Stu, and then you, Bob, but it really hit me hard to hear
Shock G, aka Humpty Hump, had passed away. I think he was 57 years old. He's gone.
Yeah, that is sad. Of course, you know, the Humpty Dance, that was like the song that sort of
propelled them onto where they would have made today's episode because it was a huge, huge hit.
The production on that track still bangs to this day.
It's like, doesn't sound dated at all.
It just says, awesome as it was the first time you heard it,
it would be a hit, I think, if it came out today
and we never heard it before.
But Shock G also, you know,
Tupac was a part of Digital Underground
and Shock G famously appeared on Tupac's I Get Around.
And that was for people that only knew the Humpty Dance.
They were like, wait a minute, that's the Humpty.
They didn't even realize because they weren't Digital Underground fans necessarily.
And I think that opened up a whole new sort of lane for him.
But I've seen them live before and people maybe don't realize, but he was actually a really talented musician.

When you see the, you know, that's, I guess, all around the world, the same song.
Yeah, and that's the song that introduces Tupac.
Right. And so he plays the organ on that.
And when you see them live, he does it live and he's pretty good at it.
Where did you see them?
I had to have been in L.A. at some point, but they were around, you know.
Yeah, yeah, playing. But they were, you know, really talented guys
and sad, another loss.
Smooth voice.
When he rapped as Shaak Chi, he had a really smooth voice.
I think he was heavily inspired by Prince.
Like how he, you know, how Prince would go in the studio
and do all the parts himself and kind of bake it up.
Like, I think that was a heavy influence on Shock G.
Bingo, Bob.
I guess I don't call you that anymore.
It's just Bob Lillet.
That's fine.
Bob, share with us your thoughts
on what Digital Underground meant for a young Bob.
So, you know, so 1990, I was 14 years old
and starting high school.
I grew up in an Ontario housing project in the east end of Toronto behind Gerrard Square,
which I think, by the way, forget your Cloverdale Mall.
You should be doing a deep dive on Gerrard Square.
Anytime, buddy.

I mean, any place that had a food court with a restaurant called Poonies in it has got
to have some stories.
That's very insane. Poonies in it. It's got to have some stories. That's very insane.
Poonies are good enough for me, man.
You know, I just, same kind of thing.
I imagine,
my memory of it is, even though
technically, the Humpty Dance
is the second single off the album, right?
Do What You Like First.
Wait, wait, wait. Is it though? I feel like
the first, I did hear Do What You Like first
and I had that before I had Sex Packets,
but I feel like Humpty Dance
might be the first single off that album.
It wasn't, no.
Because it was,
my memory of it is that Do What You Like,
well, I didn't know Do What You Like,
but if you just look at,
you can look at the release dates.
I'm pretty sure that it was,
Do What You Like was released
at least to radio in the States.
I don't know about up here,
but anything that I read, it was released to first and it was moderately successful, but not great.
And then they released the Humpty Dance and it blew up. And I think for whatever reason, and now when I listen to these lyrics and I think about what were my parents thinking while I was listening to these.
Grab them in the biscuits. Grab them in the is nothing listen to freaks of the industry I have
all those lyrics still buried deep in my head and that's a great Diana Ross sample in that by the
way some of the samples but first of all like George Clinton and like they're the the funk
they are like one of the funkiest you're right George Clinton and everybody and Bob not to derail
you but you're a father so do you do what I do like forever if my one of my funkiest. You're right. George Clinton and everybody. And Bob, not to derail you, but you're a father.
So do you do what I do?

one of my kids is hungry,

And if you're dirty,

And they've always been like wondering what the hell is dad doing with this?
I think you're the only one.
I'm sorry.

I will drink up all the Hennessy you got on your shelf.
Yeah. I just just you know what they were so ahead of their time in certain ways I loved their
second album Sons of the P as
well which had Kiss You Back and
Nose Job I have the 12 inch of
Nose Job there
and then I've
just I've always been a big fan and
they were doing stuff again you know they bring
Tupac in.
Sons of the P, which is the follow-up,
it has the last song on.
It's called A Good Thing That We're Rapping.
And it is one of the most hardcore songs
that you're going to hear.
You got to listen to it.
It's 11 minutes long.
And it's like this long-ass story about them
when they were pimps in the early 80s it's crazy good
and i for whatever reason it just resonated with me i didn't really get into rock music until i
was in later in high school i used to listen my favorite bands in 1990 would have been digital
underground bell biv devoe and uh emc right in that order exactly exactly black sheep throw a little black sheep
in there that's right yeah so you know i think just um i i think they were uh they were groundbreaking
in their like the the way they melded funk and hip-hop and for whatever reason same thing as you
you heard it you loved it and i actually instantly i would put sex packets in probably my top 10
favorite albums that's why you're here bob That's why you're here, Bob.
That's why you're here.
And it's funny because the other day I spoke to Chris Wardman.
And Chris, by the way, Stu Stone, Chris Wardman produced Fluke for Rusty.
Oh, wow.
I know.
That's a great album.
So I'm going off on Fluke.
To me, it's like, I don't know, it's like the White Album by the Beatles or some shit like that. And I'm thinking like there's these strange, like depending on timing and stuff,
when you hit certain pieces of music and they mean something to you like
forever and sex packets is right there like that for me.
And I think it's like that for Bob.
And I know it's like that for the VP of sales.
I mean,
I actually remember the first time that I ever experienced that Humpty
Hump.
I was on a school trip to Washington and we were staying in like,
it was like a seventh grade trip to Washington.
And we went to Washington and we're in the hotel room.
We had MTV in the hotel and they played the Humpty hump.
And everybody was just like, what was that?
And we all like, couldn't,
I think like three kids bought the tape at the mall the next time we had an
outing and it just took off. But I do remember.
I think Dan Kutuchar was never the same.
Wasn't there a pee fight on that trip?
I feel like I'm imagining.
I remember you telling me about this trip to Washington.
By the way, I need to clarify something.
The store where I bought the 12-inch single for Do What You Like,
it was called Star Sound. It's called Star... You actually stole it?

were all in the same gang.
Digital Underground had probably the best verse of anybody in that.

And I'm telling you, they're...
I'm sure you'll be hearing a lot of those names again.

So this is a fantastic introduction to the topic.
Because do you guys know at what number Humpty Dance peaked on the Billboard Hot 100?
I'm going to say number four.

I know it's outside the top 10 because we had to read the focus of this.
Right. So the answer is number 11. And that's why we changed it from top 10 to top 20.

Obviously, he has a rich history with a lot of the tv moments in music that we've seen in the
last 20 years 30 years 40 years okay but do you i did my best sell job uh for the next two stone
project i don't know if it's gonna get greenlit but i'll let you know if it doesn't let me know
because then i'll intervene and i'll be like what the fuck you're an fotm we help each other out in
this community yeah mike can I give you
just before you get underway a couple of shout outs for your performance with Chris Wardman
which I've already listened to one uh you're a real trooper for powering through all those AV
issues that sounded remind me of like when Sammy Cohn and I used to do our podcast because I know
that his uh his internet connection out there on
Vancouver Island is kind of choppy so you
are a real champ. Did it work
out okay because it's sort of like with
Carol Pope where you start sweating
because you got tech issues and
then it starts to kind of iron itself out.
It's a bit of a tricky listen but I mean
the stuff he brought I thought was, I mean if you're
into all those albums which I
assume most people who listen to your podcasts are there's there's all sorts of uh good stuff there and i
do admire you for biting your tongue when you were talking about molly johnson and you didn't do the
alta nova alta moda i almost like a chortle like you almost did get it out but you didn't want to
cut them off i almost did yeah so you're right molly molly who part of the reason i was so
crushed by my molly experience was because of the mad respect i had for her so it's like it's all
coming from this place of like admiration and love and that's why i was so like hurt by the
whole thing because i'm i'm a big fan and i think that is a sneaky awesome toronto jam the breeding
ground song love it it's great great great tune. And Molly's fucking amazing on that.
She brings it, yeah.
Well, that band used to be almost like a gothic band, I think.
Like, they were kind of like quite dark at the start.
So there was a real shift in their sound.
It's almost like a rootsy thing.
It sounded like big country or something.
