Welcome to episode 268 of Toronto Mike
A weekly podcast about anything and everything
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery

in the six dot com Toronto real estate done right. I'm Mike from Toronto Mike dot com
and joining me this week is digital and in-game host for the Toronto Argonauts, Jackie Perez.
How's it going?
Jackie, I already feel like we're best friends.
Isn't that weird?
Is it because you have a Filipino wife?
Automatically we're family?
Hey, come on.
I don't see race.
We're all of the world.
But just you're so personable and chatty.
And already I'm digging this episode and we just began.
So thank you for visiting.
Thank you for inviting me.
When I got asked to pick my 10 favorite songs,
I was like, okay, let's do this.
It's going to be exciting.
Okay, let me tell the people because you are the first person
in this exclusive club.
So prior to today,
everyone who's kicked out the jams
has already been here at least once.
It's a return visit where they kick out the jams.
We're meeting for the first time and you're going to kick out the jams today.
Like physically,
literally kick out the jams.
I think I tweeted as I saw a photo of you with a football and I tweeted,
this woman looks like she can kick out a jam.
So I'm not,
I'm just like,
you're not wrong.
Also like, I think this is the 14th kick out the jam. So I'm not, I'm just like, you're not wrong. Also,
like,
I think this is the 14th
kick out the jam episode,
but there's been a lot of like,
there's been a lot of
middle-aged white guys
kicking out the jams.
Okay.
So I'm,
I mean,
I've had a few younger women,
Siobhan Morris and Sophia,
yours,
Tukovic.
Say it again.
Yours,
Tukovic.
Okay.
Very good.
Very good. And now uh now of course yourself
but you are the first non-white person to kick out the jams okay which is long over thank you
do I get a trophy for this yeah you're like breaking a color barrier it's pretty pretty
cool stuff but they don't see that on this podcast no I'm gonna we get a photo don't let
me forget the photo afterwards.
Note to self.
Now, I mentioned off the very top,
you're the, and I want to get the full title here,
digital and in-game host for the Toronto Argonauts.
But I also know from my notes that you were born in Manila.
I was, yeah.
I was born like a very long time ago.
Not as long as you.
Thank you very much, Jackie. Good save that. It goes without saying,
I'm an elderly gentleman.
You've just aged yourself
completely, like a senior citizen here.
You know, if you were a guy, I would ask you right now,
how old are you? And I realize my brain's saying
you can't ask a woman her age.
Is that sexism? Is it? I mean, I ask a woman her age. Is that, that's sexism in a way, right?
I mean, I graduated university a while ago.
I mean, I was born in Manila in the 80s.
Let's say that.
And when I was one or two.
Keep going.
No, I only said 81 because my wife was born in 81.
Okay.
Nope, not 81.
85.
Keep going.
But I was born in Manila around two years old. My family actually moved
to Africa. We lived there for about a year. And then we called Canada home in the early 90s.
Mississauga was the place where my parents chose to raise us, me and my brothers.
And they chose Canada because this is the coolest country in the world. Is that right?
They did some
analysis it is uh but when I asked them now that's what they told us we were growing up
I asked them now they're like actually uh we moved from Ghana which is West Africa to Canada
uh the day our visas were expiring because that was the first one uh to accept our citizenship
or our application between the states and Canada.
Oh, I see. We were just first in. Did you need like a family member here to like sponsor you or anything?
Yeah, I mean, we have family here, but because Ghana is part of the Commonwealth Treaty, I guess it was easier to get in there as opposed to the states because we also have family in New York. So that was also another option.
to the States because we also have family in New York.
So that was also another option.
But now looking back, are you glad that Canada was in first,
that you were raised in Canada? Yeah, no, I love Canada.
I love the multiculturalism here.
The biggest thing my parents had always stressed to us was,
you know, we could have stayed in the Philippines
and done very well there.
But the reason why we as a family moved was so you guys could have stayed in the philippines and done very well there but the reason why we as
a family moved was so you guys could have better opportunities better choices um and and for them
you guys get lots of um tsunamis and natural right like okay disasters i know i alluded to this but
my wife is of filipino descent she's from a city in the philippines called edmonton have you heard of that city yeah it's called edmonton so she's from my geography is uh not correct by the way uh there's a movie i i've
only ever seen one filipino movie in my life and it was called metro manila and it was fantastic
i like a couple years ago was it i've never watched i think it was 10 years old or something
but uh i'm telling you,
and I'm trying to remember where I saw it.
It might have been Netflix or something.
I don't know.
But Metro Manila was fantastic.
And I said to my wife,
are all Filipino movies this good?
And she said, no.
This is like this special.
That's actually how I learned the Filipino language
because I mean...
Tagalog.
Yeah, the main one.
Good one. You said it much better than I did. I know. Because I used I mean Tagalog yeah the main one good good good one you said it much
better than I did I know because I used to say Tagalog and then my wife told me it's actually
Tagalog yeah don't ask me to speak Filipino fluently it's not good but that's actually how
I learned the language or just to understand it my parents would rent a drama and a comedy and
like on the weekends as a group, we would watch Filipino movies.
And that's how I would learn Filipino.
And do you,
but you don't,
you don't speak it well.
No,
it's like my French.
I learned it maybe up to grade nine.
So you have grade nine Filipino,
like I have grade nine French.
Basically.
So I can understand it.
And if you,
if I could read it,
but if you ask me to say it or speak it
it is so uncomfortably
awkward
now of course
you work
for the Argos
so you work for the Toronto Argonauts
we're going to talk a little bit about Argos here
get deep in with Argos
but you joined the Argos
family in 2011 and you're a cheerleader I started as an Argos. But you joined the Argos family in 2011
and you're a cheerleader.
I started as an Argos cheerleader,
which, I mean, that's how I relate myself to Argos.
But the last three years,
I have been the in-game host
and added the digital host aspect to it this year,
which is really exciting.
The opportunity to grow
and find myself and my career
within the Argos has been,
I've been so lucky and grateful
for that chance and that opportunity.
So be very specific here.
Now, my confession to you is
I've not been to an Argos game in a while.
Oh, boo.
But I had tickets to
the first regular season game at BMO Field. Okay. And I fully intended to go and I had tickets to the first regular season game at BMO Field.
Okay.
And I fully intended to go.
And I had four tickets.
And I was taking my older two kids and my wife.
And we were all set to go.
And then I learned it was the same day as my oldest was graduating primary school.
And this is one of those examples where I read the tea leaves wrong.
Once in a while, I totally misread something. I know it's hard for you to believe but it's true and this was an
example where in my mind it was a no-brainer like well of course we'll still go to the argos game
because your grade eight graduation is nothing no i was like of course you're gonna go to primary
school graduation but no my brain was thinking like like i told i said okay we can blow that
off we'll go the argos game. Because what are you celebrating exactly?
That you graduated grade 8 into grade 9?
Like, I didn't celebrate that.
Did you?
Yeah, because you're going from elementary school to high school.
That's a big milestone.
The bar is seeing really low.
Like, I always laugh when we talk about graduating from kindergarten.
Like, any excuse for a party.
That's a little low.
The kindergarten to grade 1.
This is not much higher.
Who do you know who doesn't go to grade nine like don't be fair but i mean it's the first
thing that's actually a valid point but everyone that's kind of uh well here i was wrong so you
did go of course like so i'm like thinking okay we will blow that off and go to the argo game like
whatever and then it's like it turns out everybody was getting, like everyone was going and everybody was wearing suits
and treating it really seriously.
Like they were treating it
like I treated my convocation hall thing from university.
And I realized like I was way off,
like I was way wrong.
Like I can't.
It's a big thing.
It was a big thing.
And I ended up not going to the Argos game.
Okay.
And I went to the graduation.
You're forgiven.
Thank you.
I forgive you.
But I haven't been to a game. I think the last game I went to the graduation. You're forgiven. Thank you. I forgive you. But I haven't been to a game.
I think the last game I went to, Reggie Williams was playing.
Okay.
And that's a while ago.
You just dated yourself.
Right.
There are three more games left, regular season games left in this season.
So I hope to see you at one of them.
And I can only imagine because I've been to soccer games at BMO that like on these nights right now are like summer nights.
These are amazing.
It is 30 degrees today.
Yeah.
And it's mid-September.
Like I think it would be amazing to watch a football game outdoors in weather like this.
Weather like this is amazing.
And I mean, it's on a Saturday and you could bring your kids because after the game, there's a kids in the zone.
So you could bring your kids onto the field and meet the players, the cheerleaders, the mascot, and you get to touch, I guess,
the end zone.
And I now have a hookup. I can say, hey, let's meet the in-game. Oh, hold on. I want to get
this right again. Hold on here. The digital and in-game host, Jackie.
Yeah, that's a big selling point. I'm meeting you right now, Mike. Meeting you right now.
You'll be all over the screen and it'll be a big deal to the little ones i can see them being impressed
so you're 2011 you become a cheerleader you end up uh moving up to become captain captain of the
cheerleaders yeah which is cool yeah there's about uh 35 girls on the or ladies on the team
and there are about two captains and I was one of them.
And it was really exciting because it was my second year. And the coach was like, listen,
you know, you showed a lot of leadership. Uh, you really excelled your first year. And I,
I think you're ready to be a captain. I was like, excuse me. I was like, this is my second year.
I don't know if I can handle this. She's like, no, no, no. I think you can do it. Um,
she's like, you're a great role model. Uh, you're really out there in the community. So,
um, let's see how it goes. And for me, yeah, to be a mentor to a lot of these girls who are, you know, fresh out of university or like in
their late 20s, that was a learning process for me, but it also gave me a chance to pass on my
knowledge and share with them what I've learned as a cheerleader. And during that time, I also
got to utilize my skills. I was like, listen,
I'm doing digital stuff with this full-time place that I'm at, the National Ballet School.
Twitter and Instagram was just exploding at that time. So I was like, let me use my skills
and let me take over the Argos Cheer social media accounts. And we let that grow and
cater to what it is today.
Do you still handle the Argos accounts?
Not anymore.
But the coach, who's one of my closest friends and one of my greatest mentors, Jory Brown,
she's always like, what do you think of this post? And after every game, we have a little routine.
It's like a 12-hour day.
And after the game's done, people usually go home or they go to the um williams to
um just get some eats afterwards and then there's me and her we're sitting in the corner we're doing
our social media for an hour and everyone's like are you not socializing like yeah we're working
right now we're working right now so uh yeah we're still on social uh giving my input sometimes but
uh yeah it's just habit but did i hear you say you do something similar with the ballet. Yeah. So while I was at Argos Cheerleader,
that was like a side job or the hobby
because that was just what happened.
But are you a dancer?
I grew up dancing.
I grew up...
My oldest daughter is a competitive dancer.
Where does she dance?
It's called Gada Dance.
Like Dandas.
Familiar with it.
Absolutely.
I danced in Mississauga at Jean Boutoulier Academy
of Dance, focused really on classical ballet, but I did jazz, the hip hop and the street dance. You
know, you could do that at home. That was me recording on the VCR, all the music videos and
learning the choreography and rewinding it back and forth. So dance was a huge part of my life,
which is also why I auditioned for the Argos Cheer.
Well, I mean, it makes you fit.
I know that my oldest daughter is like, she's really strong for her size.
Like she's got this core strength or whatever.
And I think it's because she does all this like dance stuff.
You build a lot of core and you don't realize.
And for me, everyone's like, oh, you're really fit.
I was like, yeah, I guess.
But I just danced growing up.
And you don't realize that dance, even when you're at that age, you're just dancing for fun
or you're dancing because you like it.
And it actually is a really good workout.
I mean, you can't be out of shape
and be a cheerleader, right?
Because like, first of all, it would look funny.
I think it'd look funny.
Well, I mean, you're on the sidelines
and it's what, a three hour game.
You're constantly moving
and then you've got to perform at halftime
and keep that energy up constantly.
So yeah, you better keep that energy up constantly so yeah you you better uh keep your
energy up that time our uh amphetamines uh popular amongst the girls in the cheerleader they pop in
the pills to keep the energy you know what it's like just a natural energy i find and i think
that's what's really cool about uh b12 then you just b12 uh the argos cheer is that um our energies
are all the same and a lot of people say, oh, you have a really bubbly personality.
You're really energetic.
I'm like, no, that's normal.
Isn't everyone like that?
They're like, no, it takes a certain type of personality to be that bubbly.
Yeah.
And it's one of those things where not everybody can get up there and stay up there.
Right.
Like, you know, this song.
Have you ever heard of this song?
Oh, yes.
The Argonauts introduced me to that.
So shout out to the Argonauts.
The Argonauts.
And they, yeah, this is called, I don't know what it's called.
Go Argos, go or something.
But it's the Argos fight song.
The Argos fight song.
Do you know the lyrics?
Oh, God, no.
But if you want to sing along, go ahead.
I am a dancer slash performer.
I'm not a singer at all.
But you do karaoke, right?
Because you're Filipino.
And I know this.
My wife's family is big on karaoke.
Oh, God.
Okay.
Is my family big on karaoke?
Yes.
We grew up with a magic mic.
I think you know what that is.
It's a microphone that rates your level of singing and your quality of it.
I hated that.
And no, I don't like karaoke, but I'll do, I'll bring it out sometimes.
I'll bring it out sometimes.
I did, I got recorded by my daughter doing Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden.
Is that your go-to?
It wasn't my go-to, but this is some Wii game, like Nintendo Wii,
where you have to it's like
i think it's american idol or something like that and i went with it because i felt that it was in
my range like i could do this one but i don't know how it turned out but okay so this is the
argos fight song is this still played uh during games not as much not are the argonauts where
they kicked out am i you know they're uh i mean you know, they're, I mean, you know what? They were actually there during the nineties back or the nineties back to
back reunion.
It was a 96,
97.
There were alumni that came and then they brought up the Argonauts.
Doug Flutie was there who I hear is your favorite player.
Okay.
So I only own,
I only own one football jersey and it's a Doug Flutie jersey from when he
was with the Buffalo Bills. But I, I loved Doug Flutie as an Argonaut and that's why Doug Flutie jersey from when he was with the Buffalo Bills but I loved
Doug Flutie as an Argonaut
and that's why I loved him as a Buffalo Bill.
Okay. He was my favorite.
I loved him because he was a little guy
like myself
you know we're about the same size and
he just all he did was win like
everybody was like you're too small
and he showed all of them.
Yeah he showed all of them and Yeah, he showed all of them.
And all he, even with the Bills,
if you remember those seasons,
if you remember when he was the Bills,
all he did was win.
Like, I don't, I think the owner wanted Rob Johnson to play
and he ended up playing in that Memphis City Miracle,
yeah, the Music City Miracle game.
And that's the game, really, that's the last,
that game broke my heart to a point
where I never loved the game the same again. And this game broke my heart to a point where like i never
loved the game the same again and this is i don't know how long ago this was now but
doug flutie was on the bench for that game it was all rob johnson and uh anyway i love i love
doug flutie absolutely and you didn't come to that game because we were giving away bobbleheads
we're giving away all these things and you know what I have a little gift for you, actually. Oh, my God. I brought you your very own
Doug Flutie bobblehead.
That's amazing.
Limited edition.
There you go.
No, that's...
That's for you.
Thank you.
I'll post a picture
to my social media accounts.
But these are teams I loved.
His head's very sensitive.
Okay, so don't break.
So I'm going to put them
on display here
with my Maestro Fresh West album
and my Andre the Giant mug
and it'll be treated
very delicately.
Thank you, Jackie,
very much.
And I want to say
that I root for the Argos.
I don't want to,
I'm not one of those guys
who's like,
it's not the NFL.
I have none of those thoughts.
It's a completely
different game.
And I think it's an exciting,
and I've had periods in my life
where I was really into the Argos,
but it's not that I'm,
it's not that I've gone cool on the Argos.
I went cool on football.
Like I don't watch any NFL right now either.
Right.
But if I'm,
I would really like to go see a football game
at BMO Field.
Like this is something I want to do
and something I will do.
You need to,
especially if you've seen a game at Rogers Center.
It's a completely different
experience.
So this is the schedule I'm looking here.
I don't know what
date it is, but is September 16th in the future?
No. This Saturday
is the 23rd.
Good call. So this is
Montreal we're playing on Saturday
at 7 p.m.? Yes, Montreal. Then we've got Saskatchewan
and I believe Winnipeg is our last home game.
Cool.
I know that all the expats
or all the people from Saskatchewan
who have moved to the Big Smoke
love to go to those Rough Rider games,
and they're green.
There's always a big turnout.
You'll find Riders fans everywhere.
Everywhere, I find.
But yeah, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
The Argos are doing
pretty well right now.
Top in the East.
So let's hope
to keep that up
for the rest of the season.
You know,
I was curious,
before you came on,
I'm curious,
like,
where are the Argos right now?
We're actually technically
in second
because there's a,
the other team ahead of us,
Ottawa,
played one more game
and tied it
and somehow that gives them like percentage points.
Percentage points, yes.
But we're almost there.
We're almost there.
We just got to win this game on Saturday.
Right.
If we win the game on Saturday, we are in first.
But I mean, I know you work for the Argos, but this is a losing record.
Okay.
Let's not get too excited.
Right.
But somebody has to win the East.
Somebody has to win the East.
It might as well be us.
It will be the Argos.
Okay.
It will be the Argos.
All right.
So in 2015, that's when you become
game day host.
And maybe in a nutshell,
what that entails,
like, is that like,
so you interview people
and guests and fans
and stuff throughout the game
to kind of keep entertaining
for people in this game?
Yeah, we keep that energy up
throughout the game.
So when the game
isn't being played,
it's my job as well as an amazing double blue crew,
I like to call them, to keep the fans entertained.
You've got Jason, the mascot as well,
who also went through a change.
Is he less scary now?
Is that what's happened?
I don't know.
Like, I think so.
I mean, do you find the old one was scary i mean
i have pictures of both i have pictures of my oldest with jason from that reggie that must
have been a long time ago because he was little i'll show you later except that he was uh i know
that it didn't scare my son was a human he was it it was uh yeah like a human with big head. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so it's that now, but now he's blue.
Okay, cool.
Jason's blue.
Jason is blue now.
Which makes sense.
But yes, it's an opportunity to really engage with fans,
give away some really cool prizes,
interview some awesome people.
So yeah, it's a lot of fun.
It's a lot of energy.
And especially at BMO Field,
you can hear the crowd a lot more
compared to
the Rogers Center so it's so cool well I can't I can't imagine uh the difference because uh that
dome was always so cavernous and was never uh was never a great venue for the Argos uh but BMO and
on paper at least it makes all the sense in the world like there's not a bad seat in the stadium
and I remember when um I was a cheerleader
and walking around the Rogers Center,
you would hear season ticket holders saying,
you know, it's not the same.
It is like those words that you said, cavernous.
You know, it's not as intimate.
But that's all I know.
That's all I knew.
And then going out to BMO Field,
you do understand that, yeah,
you feel like you're right in there in the game.
And like I said, the view from any location is phenomenal is uh don landry still working don landry still there
and now we're co-workers and it was funny because uh i you know we're more than halfway through the
season and i haven't seen him since the season started oh because you uh he's he's in the booth
he's in the booth up top in the sky and i I'm down on the field level. So we hear each other, or he sees me.
But I was like, hey, bud, are we going to actually physically see each other in person?
He's coming back to kick out the jams.
Is he?
I have that confirmed, yes.
And he's such a cool cat.
He's been on the show.
But when I had Brian Williams on from TSN, I knew Don Landry had done a pretty good
Brian Williams impersonation.
So I just like, hey,
you want to do something special for that show?
And Don put together a piece of audio
of Brian Williams and Don Cherry.
And I opened up the episode with that.
And it was great.
So shout out to Don Landry,
who's one of the good ones.
One of the good ones.
And big time Argos booster.
Big time CFL fan.
Huge.
And he's doing amazing.
And not only is he the in-stadium announcer,
but he also writes pieces for the CFL.
So if you want your Argos fix or your football fix,
follow Don Landry.
Don Landry. Don Landry.
Also, since I'm doing this, I know he's going to listen.
I need to say hi to Blind Derek, who's a friend of the show.
Blind Derek was on the Dean Blundell show.
You might remember him.
Hi.
Blind Derek.
Blind Derek does not miss a home game, an Argos home game.
No.
He doesn't miss it.
Have I met Blind Derek?
Have we met?
Have you met a guy, a visually impaired gentleman very nice
there's a blue jay uh thing on the wall behind you that uh blind eric wellsman uh brought over
he works for new cap now and like imaging new cap owns uh boom and the throwback station the move
okay love the move i knew it listen to that on the way here you You knew it based on my jams. I saw your jams.
Yeah.
When you told me to pick my jams,
I was like,
you know what?
We're going to look at what the move's playing. So when you're listening to the move
and all that stuff like that,
you're listening to the move.
Is that him?
He puts that together.
Okay.
Shout out to Blind Derek.
Blind Derek.
Big Argos fan.
And while I'm on the topic,
Bingo Bob works at Rock 95 in Oshshawa okay uh he doesn't go by that name
anymore he's bob willett so bob willett is also a big time argos fan and he's coming in soon on a
friday evening to kick out the jams so bob willett a lot of grunge i hope is that what you're hoping
i think that's what bob brings i i we have nothing, Bob? Nothing. I bet you we get nothing
from the move
when Bob gets in here.
But you can bank on it.
I'm going to ask him
to pull something
from an Argos game,
one of the songs from there.
Well, we'll see.
We'll see.
So, yeah.
And question for you.
Like, it's not all.
I don't want to...
Like, this is about real talk
and I'm not...
You know, you're great
at what you do
because I've watched
the videos and everything.
Thank you.
But there's a perception. Well, it's not a perception because numbers don't
lie that the argos are struggling at the gate okay so this is a work in progress okay still
very new season i wouldn't i don't say new i don't want to scare you off before the before
the kick out the jams begin never scared bring it on but like if it fits and i'm hope i get it right
but let's say the capacity is 20 000 right so we're in the second season of the argos at bimo
i would have thought by now that maybe we would i mean if you're not at 20 000 maybe you're at
15 000 a game or whatever like i don't i just know that uh people tweet at me like TFC and I know there's a larger capacity for TFC but TFC
sells that place out regularly on weeknights in the summer and in the last how many years though
because what five years ago that wasn't the case that might be true that might be true I don't know
I don't know it's also a huge TFC fan you know a big TFC supporter and I remember it they were
having a tough time too so I think it just takes time Is it tough to cut
through the noise
in this city
because Toronto
the big smoke
we got
lately we've had
not this year
but we had two years
of Jays in the playoffs
the Leafs are suddenly
like with Matthews
and Marner
and Nylander
like there's a super
Leafs buzz now
Toronto's a tough
sports industry
and you got the Raptors
you got all those
guys right
so for the Argos
yeah it is a tough sell but at the same
time um it is a different experience than all those other games and i am a full supporter of
toronto sports teams um and i find that each one is very very unique no this is why i always
preface this because people are like uh if i point out like you know all the argos had i don't know
like they had 14 000 at this game or whatever.
Like this is not me. No one's going to be happy.
This is not me.
I don't want the Argos to go away.
Like what have they been here for a hundred years?
They're the oldest sports team in North America.
So I'm not even just saying Toronto.
I'm not just saying Canada, but in North America, they're the oldest sports team.
And you know how Toronto has a lot of blue colored sports teams yes of course
that started with the argos double blue yeah double blue it started there so you can't see
it going away i don't want it to go away it can't go away no and uh i so i really hope that they are
able to sustain uh themselves in this market and let's get to that 20 000 i mean i know there's a
20 000 the tv ratings are high.
Yes.
So people watch on television.
They need to come to BMO and experience it.
And I speak as a guy who needs to do that as well.
You do.
And you know what?
And tickets are not expensive at all.
You know, like for an Argos game,
they start at 20 bucks.
Yeah, that's not bad.
You know?
And there's sort of a tailgate thing.
There's a tailgate.
Not sort.
There is a tailgate. It's in that parking lot, Ontario Place parking bad. You know? And there's sort of a tailgate thing. There's a tailgate. Not sort of. There is a tailgate.
It's in that parking lot, Ontario Place parking lot.
That's right.
So there's tailgate and they're kicking it off four hours before the game.
And our games are on Saturdays now.
So if you're trying to find something to do with your friends on a Saturday,
go get tickets for 20 bucks, head over to the tailgate because beer is only $4
and then make your way over to the game.
Come on, is it Great Lakes beer?
I know I'm putting on a spot.
It's not Great Lakes beer, sorry,
but it is beer.
It is alcoholic.
It is beer, it is alcohol.
And it's wet.
It's a great way to start the game
or to start a football Saturday.
Do you partake before
or do you need to stay stone sober
so you can handle all those in-game activities?
I do for myself. You know what? No, I say
sober for myself just because I'm such
a perfectionist. And I was like,
you don't want to make sure.
Touchdown.
Right? Slurring? I don't think slurring
is good. I mean, before we started
this show, you're like, okay, remember the microphone's really
close. You gotta... You know why?
Because my last jam kicker, who was amazing and I'm like, I'm platonically in
love with this man. Okay. Thank you for clarifying. Right. Just in case. His name is Tim. And somebody
on Twitter said that he's the moral compass of this country. And I was like, I feel that about
Tim. Like I'm in love with this guy platonically. Okay? Have I met Tim? No.
No, you haven't met Tim.
Maybe. I don't know. But Tim Thompson, his name is.
And he has the best
stories that went with his jam. No pressure.
I don't want to make you feel like... No pressure at all.
But he tells these stories about the jams.
And I'm sitting there like
fanboy. I can't believe how good this is.
And the thing about
Tim is, unlike yourself, he's very soft spoken.
And then I get so many notes.
I'll get DMs.
I'll get emails.
I'll get comments.
I'll get tweets.
Like Tim is not on the mic.
Tim was on the mic.
Tim was perfect.
Tim was eating the mic.
I had, see what I'm touching?
No one else can see.
I have a bit of play here for that where I had it jacked up, this fader jacked up.
And that's as high as it goes. Well, it's as high as it goes
without me monkeying around here and I didn't want to F with it.
But Tim
is, I think I tweeted
he speaks softly but he carries
a big stick. Okay.
So that's why when you came here, I'm like
eat that
microphone. As I said to you, it's an ice
cream cone. It's an ice cream cone.
Eat that thing.
Sold on the ice cream cone.
So that's why I was so all over the mic technique there.
Don't sweat the technique, as they say.
No, don't sweat the technique.
But that's the advice that I get for game day.
They're like, treat the microphone like it's an ice cream cone.
You're like, got it.
Are the Argonauts going to win the Grey Cup this year?
I would love if they won the Grey Cup.
That's not the question, Jackie.
And in Ottawa.
No, I can't.
I can't show all my cards.
But I would love it because last year, Ottawa won here in Toronto.
And that was a really exciting game.
It was my first year host or as an in-game host.
And they're like, guess what?
You're also going to be hosting
the Grey Cup game and you're like
okay. And that's a full house.
It was amazing.
It was amazing because I was there in 2012
when the Argos won the
100th Grey Cup. I did not
wear my Grey Cup ring.
I should have shown you. They gave you a ring. They gave us a
ring. We had our very own cheerleader.
It's not plastic or anything.
No, it's not plastic.
Get out of here.
But no, it was a great time to experience being part of the Argos Ordinator Nation 2012.
And then when we hosted it,
you know, it would have been nice if we were there.
But just to experience it in a new stadium,
in a new role, was amazing.
I remember that game because I was,
that was,
we had a string of championships in various sports where the,
they were scripted like movie style to end the most exciting way.
And the great cup is in that group.
I think only the Stanley cup didn't really follow suit,
but as I recall,
I got,
you couldn't have like the way LeBron James won it for Cleveland over
golden state
like yeah i think that was like unbelievable uh i think the super bowl was an exciting finish that
year oh well that was the comeback right that was the comeback yeah that was like everyone checked
out uh everybody said atlanta's got this and you're just like just hold on and you're just
like but that greek cup was uh stellar right it was just exciting well yeah i mean i like um i had to i remember looking at my
phone and being like what happens now that it's a tie like how does this work right and everyone's
just asking the same the overtime rules right oh my gosh and uh i was like does no one know i was
like no it's never happened before everyone's googling it yeah thank god for smartphones but
yeah no it was it was unbelievable that game you had i had no idea who would take the Grey Cup.
Yeah, no, it was great.
So Argos will be there.
It's kind of, I don't know if,
I don't have the answer to this,
but has a Grey Cup champion
ever had a losing regular season record?
Probably, right?
Probably.
I mean, because playoffs are so different.
Like in some sports, that's impossible,
but that is possible in the CFL
because of the eight teams and the three.
It's possible to win the Grey Cup of a losing record, and I'm sure it's happening.
It's the 19th.
I'm sure it's happening.
Before we leave your little, you got a kind of a deep dive here,
and then we're going to kick out the jams.
Kick out the jams.
Very soon.
Very soon.
I've got to build this anticipation.
But I guess my last question for you is about your future.
So you're doing a great job with the Argos.
You're very well spoken.
You're likable.
I can say that.
You're personable.
I liked you right away.
Cheerful.
This is not an act.
This is the real you.
Yes, this is.
Like you don't get in your car and then you get a scowl on your face and you're cursing out drivers on the road.
I feel like that's my natural resting phase.
And people are like, what's wrong with you?
I was like, nothing.
Why?
They're just like, you look sad.
I was like, oh, no, I'm good.
So, for example, the big news in the sports media world yesterday
was another Jackie.
There's a lot of Jackies out there.
So Jackie Redmond has resigned from her post at Rogers Sportsnet
because she's going to move to new york
and be on the nhl network a great opportunity is she covering mlb too oh maybe yeah i uh probably
something good for her congratulations great no great opportunity like uh she's going to move
you know and i think that's great i sent her a dm like that's amazing she's been on the show
uh but there's an opening now at sports net like is that where you want to go like where do you
want to go where do i see myself in five years go ahead question um you know what the media
landscape's always changing and uh like we talked about before um it was only it was only three
years ago that i really decided hey i really want to pursue broadcast um i was i went to school for
communications and journalism but um life took took me in a public relations communication role, which I loved.
And Argos gave me that chance to really explore the broadcast world or the media world, if you will.
And then during the last three years, I became a host and a reporter for Rogers TV.
And I had so much fun with that.
So I've been getting these amazing opportunities to showcase my skills and make me realize, yeah, this is what I want to do with my
life. So have I achieved what I wanted to in my career? No, I'm still on my way there, I find,
and ready for what's next. Time is on your side, as Mick Jagger once said. Is that going to be one
of your jams? We will see. Do they play his songs
on the move? No.
Then we don't know if that's
going to happen.
There was a Stones disco period
in the late 70s. Maybe he could leak in there.
Maybe, maybe. But yeah.
Do I see myself as an anchor?
So yeah, you see yourself on television.
I do, 100%. Do you have any
interest in radio? Radio? Yeah. You know what? yourself on television. I do, 100%. Do you have any interest in radio?
Radio, yeah.
You know what?
Before, no.
I just, I was like, I don't know.
I'm not much of a talker.
And that's a lie.
I can talk for hours.
Radio's a lot of fun.
And I was actually exposed to that during interviews doing Argo's Cheer media hits.
You know, like we had an opportunity to talk on TSN radio.
And it's just a lot of fun.
All right, because it's just a lot of fun all right
because it's owned by bell media yes well even before that even before that when we would do our
rounds um yeah uh radio was never something i considered but uh it it is a lot of fun it's
very similar to tv yet it's like tv without the visual exactly that's what i say like it you could
be drinking this whole time and not know. Right. Like Mike does now.
Yes.
Like I encourage my guests to do.
Crack open.
So on that note, you're taking home with you.
I feel like I needed some music for this.
We reversed the roles from what I do at Argos.
Oh, yeah.
Because you gave out like Argos.
Well, you gave me my Doug Flutie bobblehead, which I'm super psyched about, by the way.
We're trading gifts.
Do you want to do a little Argos promo?
Not an Argos promo, but a promo for your show?
Can I broker something?
Who is the beer sponsor of Argos?
Budweiser.
Budweiser.
Small little independent craft brewery called Budweiser.
Just a small one.
I don't know if you've heard of them.
So I think Great Lakes Beer knows Budweiser.
So they're not afraid of a little competition.
So when you're not
drinking the Bud, you really, well, you're going to try because you're taking the six pack home
with you. It includes the pumpkin ale. Do you like pumpkin stuff? Oh, gosh. I had this conversation
actually a couple of days ago. I'm not a pumpkin fan. Pumpkin spice does not get me excited.
Pumpkin pie also does not get me excited. Pumpkin pie also does not get me excited.
Pumpkin ale, though.
Gets you excited.
It might get me excited.
And it might get you drunk.
With a little spice added to it.
Yeah, no, this is perfect for the fall season.
Not today, though.
I can't have this today.
It's 30 degrees out.
Yeah, that's the thing.
Yeah, it's sort of strange to do like fall stuff and then it's like 30 degrees outside.
But the Great Lakes guys are amazing.
They're a local craft brewery, as I mentioned. You got like an assortment. What's that one?
And a Canuck Ale. Canuck Pale Ale. What is this? Lumberjack. Okay. What else do we got here?
What else? Yeah, you're good at this. I like this. This is like trick-or-treating.
Sunnyside Session IPA. Okay. See, that one's good for 30 degrees. Yeah, that's a summer.
I'll put that aside. What else do we got?
We've got the pompous ass.
We're not implying anything there.
You just... Does this taste of snobbery?
Is that...
Have you had this one?
I usually give that to pompous asses who visit.
So you got someone else's.
That was an accident.
Are you sure about that?
Yes, I'm positive.
You know, like complimenting me and then you give me the beer subtlety what else we got we've got the blonde lager okay you know that's
my wife's favorite is it yeah i like the dark beers to be honest i got two canuck ales two
canuck pale ales so apparently i didn't have six different ones but um canadian thank you so you do
drink beer though i do actually uh so a quick story is I never did.
I never liked it.
But I went to Boston with one of my best friends about, I don't know, it was like five, six
years ago.
We went to Boston.
And of course, we did the Sam Adams Brewery Tour because that was amazing.
And it was free.
And at the end of it, they give you something to taste.
Samples.
Where we sat, though.
Have you been?
No. Okay. But I've been to
the Heineken one and I've been to the Guinness one.
Heineken and Amsterdam? Right. I was there last week.
Get out of here. It was the weirdest experience.
The funny thing is, I went to
the Heineken one and then the very next
day, I went to the Guinness one
in Dublin because I was going to Dublin
and Amsterdam. Which one did you like better?
I have to say, they were both really, really good.
How long ago did you go to the Heineken one?
This visit was...
I felt like I was in a different world when I was at the Heineken one.
I think that was probably before kids, I think.
So maybe four years ago.
So this was before selfies were a thing.
Right, right, right.
Pre-selfie era.
They really cater to the 20-year-olds because I expected to be like Sam adams where you know you you take take a look at
their process but i should point out your sam adams one was free it was it's a free it's a free
tour the heineken and the guinness are not free it is not free it's like 20 euro yeah right right
um but the sam adams one um we got led into this bar and those back we sat at the back of the room
yeah they just you get three types of beer that you taste and it's these little sample glasses but we sat at the back of the room all the pictures came to us
so you could keep going oh i was just that's what happened to me at heineken and that's how i really
in that one the one room so the guinness one hold up the guinness one is completely
like guinness when you go to the top where you can oversee all of dublin and you get your frosty
fresh pint up there and it's like the best view of oversee all of dublin and you get your frosty fresh pint
up there and it's like the best view of dublin in dublin and you're there with the freshest pint of
guinness you're ever going to have and it's just amazing like that's why i think that was far cooler
heineken was amazing but they had a room where you got two i think we had tickets when you get
two you get two little samples but you can um token however the day we were there you could
kind of they weren't really policing it or whatever.
So you could just keep going.
You could like just keep drinking.
Was yours in this weird basement?
Yeah.
I remember it was dark.
It was the weird.
Okay.
And it took you forever to get there though.
Because it starts off with this really great tour of like how they brew the beer.
And then you're led into this horse stable.
And there were horses there.
Why are there horses at a brewery?
Because they still cart the beer out?
Well, you're the Budweiser.
Isn't that the big Budweiser?
Horses?
The horses?
I don't know.
I don't know.
No idea.
The Clydesdales?
At Amsterdam, there were horses there.
And then we got led to another room.
And it was the weirdest thing where you like uh the room for selfies and because
heineken's a huge uh fifa sponsor or uh world cup is it i don't know the champions uh league
sponsor so you have five different rooms where you could play uh fifa um video games and then
you would play foosball and you're like i just want to get to the beer and then you're led into
another room where you could take selfies and uh get on a bike and do some karaoke and are like again where are
the selfies and then you got led into this rave room and then finally you get the beer it sounds
like they're appealing to the millennials oh everywhere it said take your selfie here make
sure to hashtag heineken i was like yep we're done here that's funny so you do drink beer and
you're gonna enjoy that great beer, but there's more.
There's more beer?
What?
There's a pint glass that you're taking home with you.
Oh.
You can pour your Great Lakes beer
into the propertyinthesix.com pint glass.
Thank you.
And that's courtesy of Brian Gerstein.
Brian Gerstein.
Thank you for the glass.
And let's hear,
I just watched The Shining again
and they have that
great scene.
Never seen it.
Jack Nicholson,
he does this,
he goes,
here's Johnny
at the Johnny Carson show.
I know it,
but I've never seen it
because I'm afraid.
It's not that kind of scary.
It is.
It's more of a mind.
Yeah,
that's the worst scary
that exists.
I can't,
I can't do it.
And that cool scene
when they open
the elevator doors and the blood pours out. Then I'll never sleep, And that cool scene when they open the elevator doors
and the blood pours out.
Then I'll never sleep.
Ever.
Because I think
they're going to come for me
because that can happen
in real life.
Well, we're going to hear
from Brian now
and then we're going to
kick out the jams.
This is going to be
something different
because you're not going
to be loaded with
Beach Boys and Beatles
and Rolling Stones.
I think this is going to be
something different.
You never know.
No spoiler. But here's Brian.

Thank you, Brian.
Jackie, are you ready to kick out the jams?
Let's kick out the jams.
DJ Khaled has the remix. the jams. Let's kick out the jams. DJ Kami!
That's the remix.
All I do is win, win, win. I like that you're bobbing your head to the side.
I can never get enough.
We never be in Cali
through the remix.
Everybody hands go up.
Use your hands to go up right now.
Just stay there.
And then go up down.
Excuse me, I'm white, okay? I'm teaching you how to do it right now. Just stay there. And then go up and down. Excuse me, I'm white, okay?
I'm teaching you
how to do it right now.
I hope you learned
all these lyrics
before I came
for your research.
Is this the right version?
All of them work.
There's like a hundred remixes of this song.
This song is my go-to to work out.
It gets you hyped.
It gets you pumped.
They also play this pregame during the Argos warmup.
So you're like, okay, we're getting the mood.
It's a hype song.
I know that because those old ladies are making the spaghetti sauce.
And they listen to the song.
And then I know it's something important.
That's exactly why I chose this particular song. Because I thought you could relate. I love spaghetti sauce. And they listen to the song and then I know it's something important. That's exactly why I chose this particular song
because I thought
you could relate.
I love spaghetti songs.
I love it.
Okay, so let's talk
about this track
for a second here.
This is something
I'm very excited
to have you here
because previous guests
will put down
the Frank Zappa.
Do you even know
who Frank Zappa is?
I know of Frank Zappa, yes.
I did actually do my own research looking up
the song. I was like, wow, there's a lot of queens.
There's a lot of rock happening.
Hold on, who is this?
Is that Busta?
Get out of here.
What version did you get?
There's a lot of remixes.
You recognize.
You recognize it.
It was a big Tribe Called Quest,
and they did Scenario,
and they had Busta Rhymes and all the guys,
leaders of the new school guys.
And that's the only reason why you know.
Well, I love that stuff.
Like, I love Tribe Called Quest.
Yes, they're so good.
But, okay, here's what I know.
And remember, I have a 13-year-old daughter,
so I actually know names like DJ Khaled, for example.
But there's also a rapper named Khalid. Yes, different. Yes,'s a khaled yes they're different totally took me a while to realize
that okay so did you ask her for advice you're like listen i need to break down these songs is
this the one that jackie was going for i know this guy well i knew i got the wrong version but
i'll explain in a minute but all versions are good dj khaled i know him as the you played yourself guy. You played yourself, right?
Right?
Yes, but
that's not how we're going to know.
This song is just on its own level right now.
This song is on its own level.
The version you wanted
is DJ Khaled featuring Ludacris.
That ain't fucking rich, motherfucker.
Side words in this song, Jackie.
This works too, because there's nicki minaj
i was actually i think this is a good version okay i was actually i was like which which
version would they choose i'll leave that up to him
i'm gonna next time i see you you're probably going to be playing this on repeat.
Only when I make my pasta song.
So why this song?
Yeah, tell us why All I Do Is Win by a bunch of people,
but most importantly, DJ Khaled.
Right.
I feel like he got everyone together on this.
No, this song came out in 2010.
Again, this is one of my go-to when I go work out
just to get you in that headspace.
But the biggest thing for me is in 2012,
like I mentioned earlier,
the Argos won the Grey Cup.
When we were celebrating,
this is one of the songs that came on
and you had everyone like the players
the cheerleaders family head office we were all together partying and you they're hoisting the
great cup and this song is going off so for me when i hear the song i think of the great cup
festival the 100th great cup and the argogos winning that year. That's a great reason.
And I would think this has maybe supplanted Queens,
We Are the Champions, right, as the go-to tune
after you win something.
It's true.
You know, yeah, Queens was,
the We Are the Champions was also on my list,
but I was like, yeah, but no, this is much better.
Much better.
I think it's strange to me.
I do like this version.
But it's interesting that your version has Snoop Dogg.
There's no Snoop Dogg on this version.
He probably got a bunch.
Listen, we're going to get as many people as we can.
Yeah, how many remixes does he just, every rapper around,
he groups them up and says, if you remix one, you remix two?
I think now they just have five different versions.
Right?
And next year,
they're probably going to have
two more.
Catchy hooks.
I've learned with all my music choices
that I'm all about the catchy hooks.
I'm a sucker for those, so.
So when you work out, though,
what are you doing
when you work out?
Like, what is...
Okay, so...
In February, I just started weight training. Do you weight out, though, what are you doing when you work out? Okay, so in February, I just started weight training.
Do you weight train, Mike?
You look like you do.
You're just such a bad liar.
You couldn't even keep a straight face when you said that.
No, do you?
They're going to see a picture of us, and they're going to say,
why is she so much stronger than him?
I bike a lot.
Right.
I don't bike. But I don't
do anything else. I, confession, so it makes you feel better. I actually don't know how
to bike. You don't know how to bike? No. Like as a kid in Manila, you didn't bike? No, because
I was never a kid in Manila. Oh, you were in Ghana. I was here. I mean, I got to the
training wheels level and then never graduated. Interesting. Never graduated. Maybe because
I didn't get a ceremony
and made it a big deal.
It is like, I don't know.
I thought that was a rite of passage
for children around the world to learn to bike.
I know a lot of people are shocked.
They're like, you're very athletic.
You don't know how to bike.
I was like, yeah.
They're like, what were you doing?
I was like, well, I was dancing
and I was playing baseball.
But I know my question is like,
how did you get places?
Like, did you have to be driven places?
Yeah, we were driven places yeah that's
we were driven places like if you had a t-ball game oh yeah i was always because the reason i
biking is usually the reason biking is so important to kids and teens is because that's their car
essentially like that's how you get to the park i had my family or parents okay or friends who
would drive us to places and it's tougher to learn to learn how to bike as an adult than it is as a kid.
Is it?
I think so because there's a whole balance equilibrium thing.
I think it's tougher for an adult.
So when I was in Amsterdam, everyone was like, you should ride a bike.
I was like, yeah, that'd be great.
No.
That's the wrong.
I think, who was I talking to recently?
That's the wrong place to learn how to bike.
They don't wear any helmets.
They're all, yeah, I almost got run over a bunch of times.
But no, February I started weight training and, you know, I was like, this is very new to me. don't wear any helmets they're all yeah i almost got run over a bunch of times but uh no uh february
i started weight training and uh you know i was like this is very new to me i just i'm just like
i'm very much more of a i'll take a class and that's how we're gonna get fit um but it's it's
very fascinating what you can get your body to do just with or or uh or i guess like phase your
body to do i'm not using the right words right
now but um i guess mimic your body to gain muscles in certain areas or just even challenge yourself
with how much you're lifting it's it's a lot of it is mental i'm going to do this because i need
to do this okay i don't do any weight training and i look like a complete wimp i have to go
somewhere i can't do you gotta got to go to the gym.
Oh, really?
Actually, I've never had a gym membership.
No, I actually have a really good friend of mine who's a trainer.
So shout out to Habitual Fitness.
Can I do that shout out?
Shout out to Habitual Fitness.
They'll have to send me a check, though.
We'll work.
I'll send them the beer.
How about that?
They are so great.
It's such a great community and gym.
And this is a Mississauga thing.
It's a Mississauga.
They're amazing at not only keeping you on track with your goals, but just like you have fun with it.
It doesn't feel like it's hard work.
I mean, it is, but you know.
Jackie, I have to go to the second jam because I love this track.
Did you rearrange the ones that I sent you?
No, I kept the order you sent me.
Interesting.
Okay, you love this track. I love this track. Did you rearrange the ones that I sent you? No, I kept the order you sent me. Interesting. Okay, you love this track.
I love this track. So do I.
Hey, where did we go?
Days when the rains came Down in the hollow
Playing a new game
Laughing and running, hey, hey
Skipping and jumping
In the misty morning fog
With our hearts that felt better than you
Brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl
Van Morrison, Brown-Eyed Girl.
Love this song.
What were you thinking, Randall now when you heard this song?
There's a lot of nostalgia, a lot of flashbacks, good memories.
And you're a brown eyed girl.
That's why you love it so much.
Right.
And then when I Googled the song, because when I like a song, I end up Googling it and
learning as much as I can about it.
Then I read somewhere that it actually wasn't the title of the song.
It was originally Brown Skinned Girl.
I was like, no way.
And then it made me like it even more.
Because you consider yourself a brown skin girl.
Yes.
I've also been told that.
They're just like, oh, you're pretty dark for your...
I was like, excuse me?
I'm Filipino.
Yeah, as you know.
Yeah, I call it the natural tan.
I can't compete with my wife.
Even in the winter when I consider myself pale,
people think I've been on vacation.
Yeah, it's really quick to tan really dark.
It's funny because I have children with my wife
and one of them has my skin tones.
Just one of them?
But the other one has what I call an olive tone natural tan.
Not as dark as hers, but darker than mine for sure. Do they tan easier or burn at all?
No burns.
Burns are so bad for a kid
because they're linked to skin cancers
and stuff that you lather on all that
sunscreen every time they go outside.
They don't ever have a chance to burn.
Does your wife burn? I mean, I don't burn.
You don't burn. My wife does not burn.
It's very fascinating to me when people are like,
oh, it's so bad. I'm like, what does it feel like though?'t burn. Oh, you don't burn. My wife does not burn. It's very fascinating to me when we're like, oh, it's so bad. I'm like, what does it feel like, though?
It hurts.
I burn.
So in my life, I've burned a few times.
Yeah.
And it's painful because like a little smack like that hurts.
I said, that's not a big deal.
And they're just like, no, imagine getting burned by like a frying pan or like touching
an oven all over your body.
It's like, oh, okay.
Yeah, it hurts.
Burns are not fun.
Not fun.
That's pale Irish. But this song is hurts. Burns are not fun. Not fun. That's pale Irish.
But this song is fun.
This is a great,
great track.
Classic.
And I made these
assumptions about you
because you're a younger
person that we wouldn't
get any like 60s stuff
or whatever,
but this is fantastic.
Did I,
I went up on your
point system there?
No, this is,
again, this is one of my go-to songs. I feel like this is where like Did I, I went up on your point system there. No, this is, again,
this is one of my go-to songs.
I feel like this is where like,
I'm like,
Jackie's on vacation mode when this song goes on.
It just,
yeah,
it's,
it's,
it's a simple,
lighthearted,
fun,
summer song.
Can't go wrong with Brown Eyed Girl.
Never.
Let's kick out another Jackie Jam.
Do you know this one?
Nope.
Nope?
Was this the one you said you had no idea?
I like to kick it off jams with you
because you like to chat right off the top
and I'm like,
I need to hear a chorus first.
Okay, go listen.
Is this a country song?
I think so.
I guess so. I know every curve like the back of my hand. Doing 15 in 30.
I ain't in no hurry.
I'm gonna take it slow just as fast as I can.
Why you been in my jeans?
So this guy is named Sam Hunt.
Mm-hmm.
And the track is called Body Like a Back Road.
Right.
Is it good to have a body like a back road?
I know.
I mean, they're curvy.
Does it mean...
I don't know.
Is he talking about a woman or a car?
How do you interpret this?
I think he's talking about a woman because...
Hang on.
Let me hear him for a second.
It's got to be a car because he's like doing 15 in a 30,
which is like a mile per hour zone.
He talked about getting a girl's number.
Okay.
A girl with a braid.
It's got a, I can see it being crossover,
but it's definitely got a country feel to it.
But it's also got a pop feel, but it's like a country pop hybrid.
So a year ago i know or even
even i guess four months ago i had no idea who samson was country is not my forte uh they don't
play it on the move but um you know i heard the song on the radio and i was like oh this song's
really catchy and i would say that this is my summer 2017 song um it's a song only two minutes 45 seconds it's very short but uh i can play this
on repeat and when i need to like work in focus i'll put this on three hours will go by and i'll
have this on repeat playing and i won't be sick of it yet but they're not playing this one on uh
the move they're not um and then i googled it okay because that's what i do um and i was like
oh like who's the Sam Hunt person?
Like, let me know more about the song.
And yeah, it is a country song.
But there's a part of that.
You kind of hear it now.
They're saying like, hey, hey, hey.
It's a little hype up there.
I hear it in the right side.
That's why I love listening to these tunes on the headphones.
You get to hear stuff like that. But you hear that hey hey hey so i was like yeah that's definitely not a country part of it but it is a little bit of hype going on um and then when i googled sam
hunt and his influences he cited usher casey and jojo r kelly genuine i was like okay r&b
that makes sense now um but it's a good it. Have you heard of an artist named Tamiya?
Tamiya from Windsor, Ontario.
Right, so you do?
Okay, because I just had,
just last night, Monica, my wife.
I was like, Monica the singer?
Right, that's another.
She's like, oh my goodness,
Tamiya is coming to like the Woodbine.
She's performing.
Concert hall or something, yeah.
And she got like, my wife's
excited. I need to see this, whatever.
No word of a lie. I said to her,
I said, don't laugh.
I have no idea who Tamiya
is. I have no idea. So now she
goes to YouTube, plays like
two or three Tamiya hits.
Wait, I only know one. There's
apparently several. And I,
it's because I wasn't listening.
This is not a genre I ever cared or had any interest in.
These songs she was playing for me, like they were hits.
I was hearing them for the first time.
I am completely, and like this is a whole world.
Because you mentioned these names like Genuine and stuff.
Like I know the name Genuine.
I don't know a Genuine song.
Yes, you do.
I don't think so.
This whole R&B world, I don't think I know. Okay, Magic. I don't know a Genuine song. Yes, you do. I don't think so.
This whole R&B world, I don't think I know. Magic Mike?
Pony?
Magic Mike.
You know the Pony song?
Google it now.
Oh, my God.
You know Genuine.
I'm going to.
I know some Usher.
I know some Usher.
I would hope so.
Yeah, because you go to weddings and they do the Yeah song probably over and over again.
My weddings I go to have Led Zeppelin.
What are you talking about?
All right, let's kick out another jam.
Oh my goodness, this one takes me back. Yeah. Whoo!
Yeah. Uh-huh.
Oh, yeah.
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
I won't let it.
The clock strikes upon the hour And the sun begins to fade
Still enough time to figure out
How to chase my blues away
I'm gonna light up till now
It's the light of day that shows me how
And when the night falls
The loneliness calls
Oh, I see you singing.
I could do this, Pat.
Let's hear it.
I had this cassette.
You had this cassette?
Yeah.
This is the self-titled,
no, this follow-up, the Whitney, this is called Whitney. Yes, it's the second album, yeah. The first This is the self-titled, no, the follow-up,
the Whitney.
This is called Whitney, I think.
Yes, it's the second album, yeah.
The first one I had too,
Whitney Houston,
and I had this one, Whitney.
Yeah, in the late 80s,
I listened to a lot of pop stuff,
like a lot of Top 40.
I know this track very well.
Do you know the dancers too?
No.
But I've seen the video a hundred times.
The great video.
Great video.
This is a great pop song,
and she was a spectacular singer.
Yes.
But it's your jam.
I should be.
No, but you don't realize that.
And then you look back and you're like, yeah, she's amazing.
Amazing.
Well, you could not go into a mall or a store.
You couldn't go anywhere without hearing her song from the Bodyguard
soundtrack, I Will Always
Love You. That was
absolutely everywhere.
Well, as a kid in the 90s, that's how you know Whitney.
But then you're introduced to
Whitney's first two albums. Yeah, you're just like, oh,
she's more than just
I Will Always Love You.
Yep.
So tell me, though, how does a young lady like you start digging in?
I don't know what this is, 87 or 88 or something?
87.
Like, you're not even born yet.
But, of course, you had a Van Morrison track, so that's okay.
Saluting you and keeping you guessing.
So where did you get introduced to?
saluting you and keeping you guessing.
So where did you get introduced to? You just heard
her newer stuff and then dove into the
catalog?
As a dancer,
this is one of the songs
that you listen
to or that you warm up to or
create a
routine to.
No, but the song is really good. And even
like now, right? You hear these at the
bars or the clubs or even on the radio.
This is, when I think of this song,
I think of my, like again, Roadtrips with
Girlfriends. Everyone knows the song.
Everyone knows it, whether you want to
admit it or not. And you're all singing at the
top of your lungs.
And again, catchy as
all hell.
So catchy. So catchy. and again catchy as all hell so so catchy so catchy
and then actually i was looking at the music video recently
the fashion and that music video is amazing amazing and the choreography and i was like
you know what we could bring that back to today. And it'll be in style.
It's a little sad, though, because this was when Whitney was like so fresh faced and like
seemed so like.
Innocent.
Innocent and pure.
Pure.
And then it's almost like she listened to her hit those notes, too.
Right.
And then the like, would there be drug abuse and different situations.
Celebrity kicked in.
Something kicked in.
And then you kind of watch
the degradation
of Whitney Houston.
And now she's no longer with us.
Died way too young.
Way too young.
Way too young.
And her daughter died.
Kind of the same way.
Yeah.
Yep.
So sad.
Very, very sad
but then you
remember her this way
do you blame Bobby Brown
you can say that
if you want to pick a person
but
at the end of the day
I don't know
I think
she has to be accountable
for what she does
it's accountable
but I think
just the pressure
got to her
handling that kind of pressure is it, but I think it's just the pressure got to her. Handling that kind of pressure.
Is it too quick, too soon?
It's real.
Very good.
Does this make your top 10?
I'm sorry that I have that rule
that says only one song per artist.
I could do 10 Whitney tracks.
Really?
No, I'm just kidding.
I was like, oh, that's surprising. No, no, no.
To me, to be honest,
I have a whole category
of what I'd call
guilty pleasures, 80s tracks.
Exactly.
When I hear them, I enjoy them,
but I would never,
no disrespect to the song,
everyone likes what they like,
I would never go out of my way
to put that track on.
I would never do something,
say, hey, I want to hear
some Whitney now.
Really?
I think in my life,
since I was a teenager, I've never had that moment of like, oh, I want to hear some Whitney now. Really? I think in my life since I was a teenager,
I've never had that moment of
like, oh, I want to hear some Whitney.
But if Whitney comes on, I like it.
But if you're getting ready on a Friday night, you're like, okay,
we got to get ready. Where am I going on a Friday night?
I don't know.
Where? You're going to the gym? No.
I'm putting on Stone Temple Pilots purple.
That's what I stick on, okay?
No, but you're getting ready with your girlfriends.
When are you going to put on?
We're going to get excited.
This is what we're going to do.
We're going to get Whitney.
Excellent.
No, awesome.
And this next track.
Yes.
Let's just hear it and then we will talk about it. Just a small town girl
Living in a lonely world
She took the midnight train
Going anywhere He took the midnight train going anywhere
Just a city boy
Morning raising softy trunks
He took the midnight train going anywhere
...
A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
Strangers waiting
Whooping down the boulevard
There's shadows searching in the night
You're just gonna let this track play the whole time?
It's amazing.
I'll allow it.
Sleep like a sleeper
Living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night There we go.
Journey.
Don't Stop Believing.
Never Stop Believing, Mike.
Never Stop Believing.
Tell me why you love this song I hear everywhere now.
This is everywhere. It's a good song i mean it's it's
my go-to i mean we talked about karaoke and my lack of love for it but uh no this is like one
of my go-to uh for karaoke songs and you know it was in 2007 when they got the new lead singer
who is filipino don't bury the lead. Yeah, who's Filipino.
So Journey started playing a lot more in the household
or in my family parties.
What's his name?
Arnel Pineda.
I saw his documentary.
There's a documentary about...
He has a documentary.
On Netflix about him joining Journey.
Right.
Because one of my skills,
I can tell you famous people when they have Filipino blood. I know them.
You can pick up on that. It's a radar. You know them.
It's that and I've been educated.
Yeah, that's exactly why this
song made the track because I was educated
the minute he made
the band. My family, every family,
you know he's Filipino, right? The newly
singer for Journey. Yeah.
That's
part of the reason why I made the list today.
No.
No, this song,
like, you can't go wrong.
You can't go wrong
with this song
or Journey.
Can I?
First of all,
that's a sing-along.
You're right.
I've never heard this song
and been unable.
I've never been.
I've always had to sing along
when I heard this song.
You have.
You can't not. you can't not,
you can't not.
If you're having like a bad day,
or even a good day,
you just,
you,
you can't not sing along.
Sofia,
by the way,
Yerskovich also brought a,
uh,
Did she bring this?
She brought a journey track,
not this particular journey track,
but this song,
this is,
first of all,
I,
I understand,
uh,
the new lead singer is Filipino,
it's a big deal, but just remember though, you're steve perry right yes i'm awake no i'm a white
guy just so you know what breaking news no no i'm aware i like this song before great track 2007
thank you it is ruined for me though because not ruined for me but I cannot hear that song without thinking about the series finale of The Sopranos.
Oh.
It is now impossible.
So this song existed before The Sopranos.
It did.
But now it is.
And I know that lots of younger people will say, oh, it reminds me of Glee.
Because Glee went nuts with this song, too.
No, I liked it before Glee.
And that's where I was hesitant.
I was like, I think he's going to call me out for liking it because of Glee.
No, no, no.
But I'm telling you,
if you're,
I'm a big Sopranos fan.
This song,
I see when this song plays,
I see the diner.
I see the members only jacket.
I see Meadow trying to park the car.
I see the family at the table.
I see Tony looking up.
I see it all.
So it makes you a little depressed.
Well, it just makes me miss the Sopranos,
which is not so bad.
Which is a great show.
Great show.
But that's a great track.
Yeah, that's a fun jam he brought there.
Don't Stop Believing by Journey.
And lead singer is Filipino.
And there's not a lot of bands that can say that.
And he sounds just like Steve Perry.
He does.
I don't know if that's a pro or a con.
It's a pro. I saw Allison. I, which I don't know if that's a pro or a con. It's a pro for it.
Cause I once,
I saw Alison,
I'm sad to admit this.
I,
I saw Alison Chains after Layne Staley died and they had a new lead singer
who sounded like Layne Staley.
Like it's a bit,
you know,
sometimes bands got to do that.
I was thinking,
I just mentioned,
uh,
Stone Temple Pilots Purple.
Cause I was listening to that yesterday and I'm like,
what a frigging great song. I mean, album, uh, Purple is from Stone Temple Pilots. And I was listening to that yesterday and I'm like, what a friggin' great song.
I mean album, Purple is from Stone Temple
Pilots and I'm thinking, oh, Scott's
dead. Like, there is no Stone Temple
Pilots and I know they tried some Chester Bennington
thing. He's dead now too.
But you would like to have to do the same.
No, I mean, that's it. I'm conflicted. Like, if you
had someone like that, it'd be cool, but that's not Scott.
That's somebody who sounds like Scott. So I'm completely
conflicted on the whole thing, but I think if a band can find somebody uh to to sounds
like the original lead singer it allows them to go continue making money off their old hits like
the journey guys can keep banking on all these songs that they've created that people love
a tribute lead singer if you will sure right who knows but that's a that's a great jam uh
you know steve perry's not dead people think
steve perry's dead like he just doesn't want to be part of the band anymore he's over it
here's a jam you pick the jam i never heard of and we'll talk about it after the break
yeah i did not know this one but let's hear another jackie jam I'm just giving out stones. Every day I get a bunch of thrones. I want to know you know what you're good.
I want to know what you're good.
Everyone falling in love sometimes.
You better know, you better know.
I don't know about you, but it ain't a crime.
It's not a crime, it's not a crime.
Everyone falling in love sometimes.
Remember that, girl.
I don't know about you, but it ain't a crime.
What all that?
Question I ask.
Tell me what you want and what you really, really want to do.
Tell me, baby girl, if your love is really, really true.
Tell me what you want and what you really, really want to do.
Tell me, baby girl, hey, how to have me like no yo, yo.
If you really love me, let it flow, flow.
And if you don't love me, let me go, go.
Watching the road where I let you know, know that everyone Everyone Falls in Love by Tanto Metro and Devante.
Great job on that name pronunciation.
Thank you.
Never heard this.
You know what?
I shouldn't say that.
It does sound familiar.
I don't know where I've heard it say that it does sound familiar I don't know where
I've heard it
but it does sound
familiar to me
it's probably on the
reggae gold CD
where you play this
then you play
Murder She Wrote
then you play
Murder She Wrote
yeah
and then you got
Just Got Paid
and then you got
Sean Paul
it starts this whole medley
is it Get Busy though
that's the Sean Paul
jam right there
see you kind
I think you know this
if you heard it
in the medley
it was very hard to choose one reggae song See, I think you'd know this if you heard it in the medley.
It was very hard to choose one reggae song.
But this
was the track.
This was the hardest track I think of yours to track down.
Really? I think so.
Like you're all, most of everything so far
has been pretty easy to locate, although I got the wrong
version of all. No, it was the right version.
The one you meant to pick uh but this tanto metro and davante maybe it's because i have no name recognition with those two guys oh right maybe that's so maybe i have heard
this i don't know and i never went to clubs that played this kind of music were you over the club
scene by then is that i just never i all the clubs i used to go to strange paradise and hear like grunge like i never i've never been to a club that played dance music right so
which is probably where you go yeah when i started the whole like let's go out and go
clubbing and whatnot this these were the kind of hits that were playing so these were good times
so they bring you back it's like yeah well but it even like even like uh
it was my first intro to reggae and soca it was uh you know we were talking about your kid
graduating from grade eight going to grade nine right it was a summer going into grade nine i was
in new york city a cousin of mine who's a little bit older she was just like we're gonna go uh pick
up some cds uh up the street i was like excuse me we're gonna buy cds off the street. I was like, excuse me? We're going to buy CDs off the street?
What?
When that was a thing when we were burning CDs.
Right.
So one of the things
she asked,
she's like,
have you heard of
the Reggae and Soca stuff?
I'm going to be asking for that.
I was like,
what is this?
And then she introduced me
to this whole new world
of Reggae and Soca.
And you liked it.
Because you're already a dancer
and it's really danceable stuff.
It's so danceable.
And I mean,
back to that Whitney Houston
dance with somebody.
In 2005, they did Lumity and who was it?
Oh my gosh, I forget.
Fat Man Scoop, I think.
They did a remix for...
I love Fat Man Scoop.
Right?
I was surprised.
I was like, really?
They did a remix for, I think it was a FIFA World Cup one.
So they remixed Dance With Somebody.
So you can put that in your notes for later.
Do you want to know mine?
I mean, I was listening to,
when I was into a lot of hip hop and rap in the early 90s,
I would throw on like Shabba Ranks in the mix.
Like just some Shabba Ranks.
And Raw As Ever, for example,
was a disc I used to spin from Shabba Ranks.
And I love like every cut on that album.
So there's my contribution to this reggae discussion. uh for this uh discussion right do you still have that i would love to for you to yeah
he had a track with uh maxi priest of all people i don't know if you remember maxi priest no but
there was a maxi priest shabba ranks jam that uh and i won't sing it to you but i think you'd love
it i think you'd love it and um i thoroughly enjoyed as a not so guilty pleasure back in the early 90s.
So that's part of that guilty pleasure list.
Yeah, that'll be a different list.
This next jam.
Okay, I got to jump right into this.
This, yeah, okay.
You're showing your age.
I'm already excited.
You're showing your gender.
You're showing your age.
Let's hear your next jam.
Oh, by the way, I picked the version from the album,
so it's got a little longer intro than you hear on the radio.
That's the best part.
Okay.
Can you imagine the choreography happening right now?
Yes.
I am picturing that.
happening right now?
Yes.
I am picturing that.
I want to say jump, jump, jump.
That's your remix.
Right. Very long intro.
But it gets you hyped.
Completely gets you hyped. Rock your body Everybody Rock your body right
Backstreet's back, alright
Backstreet Boys
I was hoping you'd sing a little bit of the lyric
Oh my god, we're back again No, but I can Backstreet Boys. I was hoping you'd sing a little bit of the lyric.
Oh my God, we're back again.
No, but I can... This is your jam and I want to hear your story.
Except that I was listening to Howard Stern on WBUF.
At this point.
Buffalo, at this point when this song was big.
And Howard and his crew, Ed Norris, Fred Norris and the whole crew
decided to do a parody of this song
and they worked on it
every day for weeks.
And that's,
I know this song,
I know their version.
This is when Casey,
you don't know
how it's pronounced,
but Casey,
remember Casey?
You remember Casey?
No, you don't.
But Casey was big on,
anyway,
they did a parody.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So it was, back, what was big. Anyways, they did a parody. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was back.
What was their parody again?
They did a couple of Backstreet Boys songs and Howard would sing and they changed the words.
And that's how I know.
Oh, you're going to have to find it and send it to me.
It's got to be on YouTube.
It has to be.
It has to be.
YouTube.
And you know their song, I Want It That Way or whatever.
Oh, it was a hard? It was a hard selection
to choose between that song
and this one.
The stern version was
I went the gay way
I'm pretty sure I've heard that one.
I'm pretty sure I've heard it.
I'm pretty sure I've heard that one.
But it was a hard choice between
Everybody and I Want It That Way.
I chose Everybody
because like you said,
it did show my age
or my gender
because this was
Backstreet Boys,
all boy bands,
the Britney Spears,
Christina Aguilera era.
Like that was the year.
Are you ready?
Those were the years.
Can I blow your mind?
My wife still doesn't
believe this story
but it's 100% true
and I have witnesses.
Okay, I'm ready.
You were in a boy band? No ready. You were in a boy band.
No, I was not in a boy band.
I got a call one day from my very good buddy, Mofo, who I played slow pitch with for forever.
Still a good buddy.
Mofo was like, hey, what do you do?
It was like a Canada Day weekend.
And he's like, we're going to have a game of ball at this park in Etobicoke.
I think it was near Mill Road.
I can't remember anymore.
Okay.
So I'm like, yeah, okay.
Like, I didn't have kids or whatever.
Like, let's go.
And I went to play ball.
And then buddy Greg Fay was on this team.
And Greg Fay somehow was, his family was friends of the family of this gentleman
who joined our game.
So I played slow pitch with this guy.
I knew who he with this guy.
I knew who he was right away.
Oh my God.
So I spent the entire day playing slow pitch with Nick Carter.
Oh.
True story.
I thought you were going to say Brian Littrell.
Oh my God.
Isn't Nick Carter the more popular one?
No.
You're the only girl who's been underwhelmed by this story.
I'm a little underwhelmed.
Nick Carter?
No. Isn't he the, but he was like the, he's a Justin Timber by this story. I'm a little underwhelmed. Nick Carter? No!
He's a Justin Timberlake equivalent? Not even
close. Not even close. But you're proving
my point, even if it's close or not,
because the breakout
guy from NSYNC
was obviously Justin Timberlake.
Yeah, but it wasn't Nick Carter. I don't think there was a breakout
for the Bakshi boys.
Not on the level of JT, but if you're going to pick the guy for Backstreet Boys,
it's not Brian, it's Nick Carter.
Nick Carter is like a mess.
Maybe now.
No, my favorite then was Brian Littrell.
We're going to have a favorite Backstreet Boys thing.
You know what?
I'm glad you played slow pitch with Nick Carter.
I'm sad that you're not impressed
by that.
No one else who kicks up the jams will ever get that
story. This was my chance to get somebody
excited about it. I'm impressed.
It took me a while. And I don't think I've ever told that story
on this podcast.
Did you take a picture with him?
Did you like, hey man. No, this was like before
we all had digital cameras and stuff. And I didn't want to be that guy. A couple of people did take a picture, him? Did you like, hey man. No, this was like before we all had digital cameras and stuff.
And I didn't want to be that guy.
Like a couple of people did take a picture,
but I did not want to be the guy who was like,
hey, he was just playing ball with us.
Was he any good?
No, he was terrible.
I remember there was a pop-up in the infield
and he completely booted it.
And I remember because I played a lot of slow pitching.
I'm no Robbie Alomar or whatever,
but we all caught pop-ups.
Who was my favorite?
Is he?
I met him.
I met him only once,
but he's,
he's the greatest Blue Jay of all time.
And all times I freaked out and I don't freak out easily,
but I freaked out.
He's like the Nick Carter of the Blue Jays.
No,
no.
How dare you,
sir?
Alomar's fantastic.
I can't say that word about Alomar.
Nicest guy.
Five tools and,
but not my favorite
of all time
because I'm older than you
and my favorite of all time
is George Bell
let's kick out
another jam
that'll get us dancing Let me play now
When I had you to myself
I didn't want you around
Those pretty faces always made you
Stand out in a crowd
But someone picked you from the bunch
When your glass was all it took
Now it's much too late for me
Take a second look
Oh, baby, give me one more chance The Jackson 5.
The Jackson 5.
I Want You Back.
So this song
was my first intro to one of my earliest memories of music, period.
But even to introduction to Motown, which probably explains my love for R&B and that kind of music genre.
But my family would travel a lot.
We would road trip a lot to the States.
So it's like an eight hour drive, nine hour drive, which I love.
My parents had one, I don't want to say album because it was eight cassettes they would play.
And it was the rock and roll of 60s, the 70s and the 80s.
And they would play this cassette over and over again.
And it would have the mamas and the papas. And they would play this cassette over and over again. And it would have the Mamas and the
Papas. It would have Marvin Gaye.
It would have Journey.
It would have the Jackson 5.
This explains so much.
So on these road trips
which you loved, you would hear these songs
over and over again. And now every time you hear
these songs, you're back in that
station wagon. Four years old.
Was it a station wagon? It was not a station wagon.
Oh, no, that's my favorite.
What was it?
A Dodge Caravan.
No, it was like a Ford.
Is that Temple?
Does that make sense?
They have Temples.
Ford Temple.
Yeah, I sure do.
Back in the day.
Red Ford Temple.
Yeah, we would be road tripping and we would play this.
And there would be a lot of Beach Boys, too.
So when you threw out Beach Boys, I was like, yeah, I was going to put that on my list.
What's your favorite Beach Boys song?
I mean, Surfing USA is a classic.
Oh, so you're into the surfing tracks.
Not the deep ones.
No.
Like Goodbye, all the...
The later ones, you mean?
Yeah, because I mean,
they had a bunch of those surf songs.
Yeah, it was the surf songs genre
that I was exposed to on repeat.
Or whatever.
They stole that one jam they have
that they stole from Chuck Berry, right?
Surfing USA.
Was that Chuck?
Yeah, there was Chuck Berry too.
Well, Chuck Berry was...
I will be rocking in...
Yeah, yeah, that's the one.
Pittsburgh, I'm trying to think
Sweet Little Sixteen
So Chuck Berry had a hit
Called Sweet Little Sixteen
And if you can
If you have it in your head
It might morph in your head
Into Surfing USA
Because they name all the towns
Yes
And it's the same tune
But the Beach Boys hit
Surfing USA
Does not credit Chuck Berry
Like so they're
Two different songs
But please
Like it's the same song.
It is the same song.
But both great jams.
But Chuck had it first.
Excellent.
Okay, so Jackson 5.
And that's, of course, some guy named Michael Jackson
who probably wouldn't amount to anything after that.
No, yeah.
Who is he?
Speaking of boy bands.
Actually, let's talk more about Michael michael after this next jam shall we
let's hear another jackie jam Woo! Go, girl!
Woo!
Woo!
Hey, pretty baby with the high heels on You give me fever like I've never, never known
You're just a product of loveliness
I like the groove of your walk, your talk, your dress
I feel your fever move my around
I'll pick you up in my car and we'll paint the sun
Just kiss me baby and tell me twice
That you're the one tell me twice that you're
the one for me. The way
you make me feel.
The way you make me feel.
Sapping in the background here.
You really turn me on.
You knock me off of my feet.
You knock me off of my feet.
My lonely days are gone.
My lonely days are gone.
Michael Jackson, The Way You Make Me Feel.
Yes.
That is from The Bad Album.
Yes.
One of the best albums, in my opinion, out there.
You know, a hell of a follow-up to Thriller because Thriller was the mega selling everywhere.
Like, what an album.
How do you follow up Thriller?
You go bad.
Bad, which, oh my God,
here we are again
of hit after hit after hit.
Wow.
Right?
This guy, Michael Jackson,
could sing and he could dance.
Oh my God.
I don't think we'll ever
have this again.
Like, we heard him
in the Jackson 5.
He's a five-year year old churning out pop singles
And singing that fantastic voice
He had at 5
And now we're listening to this guy
I won't even try to do them
I can't do them
Holy shnikey
We talked about Whitney Houston
What a voice
This guy
You mentioned he sings, he dances
But he's just this electrifying performer.
Just this crazy performer.
And this song, again, high energy.
It's exciting.
It is very much of the 80s.
But I don't know.
It's just, it gets you.
I'm very distracted by listening to the song because I just want to be quiet
and listen to Michael Jackson.
And you can hear in my headphones here,
when you hear the background singers,
it seems like he's one of the background singers.
Like is this him backing up himself?
I would imagine.
Is it already,
you're already hit that period when they get back their own track.
Oh yeah.
Of course. Of course. But but just so passionate so much energy um but then you
watched the video and it's not the i was like i don't know oh you know why because you want to
see the whole like production right like you had the production with uh bad right which was
all the production value for like this but But I mean, for Thriller, right?
I mean, everybody,
the Backstreet Boys one,
where like they're
in the haunted mansion
and whatnot.
I'm like,
this is very similar
to Thriller.
Not in the same scope,
but it's very similar
or inspired by it.
Then I see the
Way You Make Me Feel
music video.
And it's about
Michael Jackson
and his friends
following this lady
in a dark alley
and not leaving her alone. so as much as i like the
song it doesn't age well is that what you're saying well i'm just like um is anyone concerned
for this woman's safety at all in the video no we're just gonna go with it and then they do some
west side story inspired dance moves and you're like okay everything's okay in the world
i just remembered uh well how good a jam Billie Jean was.
Like, what was that?
I know.
This song bringing you back to that entire album.
Well, now I'm kicked out because I owned Thriller on cassette
and I owned Bad on cassette and I played a lot.
And Bad celebrated their 30-year anniversary recently.
Yeah, I'm not surprised.
And I remember, I mean, I was was a big still am but was a huge
simpsons fan and there was such a crossover with michael jackson the simpsons like oh with the
snake snake episode no that's barry oh wait no that's barry white that's barry white when he
was in jail when homer was in jail the mental institution the guy who thought he was michael
jackson and then he came and wrote a song with bart called lisa it's yes and uh i think there was some uh legal reason with michael jackson's
record label why he couldn't sing on the simpsons so they had this guy named kip can't remember kip
lennon i think his name is impersonate michael but michael wrote that song and michael did the
voice but they had to uh give him a fake name.
He couldn't,
it was a fake name.
No way.
It's only like twice where they use fake names because the famous episode about the substitute teacher,
it's credited to Sam and Tim,
I think Sam and Tim.
I can't remember,
but that was Dustin Hoffman.
That was also a really good Simpsons episode.
One of my top 10 Simpsons episodes.
The substitute teacher was very good
You are Lisa Simpson
See, you want to cry now
Tears
Tears
But your tears will turn into dance in a moment
Because we're going to play your tenth and final jam
Already there Red wine.
Let's go to the beach.
Each, let's go get a wave.
They say what they gonna say.
Have a drink, clink, found a bud light.
Bad bitches like me, it's hard to come by.
The Patron, oh, let's go get it on.
The Sloan, oh, yes, I'm in the zone.
Is it two, three, leave a good kick.
I'ma blow all of my money and don't get paid shit.
I'm off the floor, floor.
I love to dance.
Now give me more, more.
Till I can't stand.
Get on the floor, floor.
Like it's your last chance.
If you want more, more.
Then here I am.
Starships were meant to fly.
Hands up and touch the sky. Can't stop cause we're so high. I feel like you're getting hyped right now because your hand's going and it's getting
higher and now your head's going.
I can't lie.
I'm wanting to jump up and down right now. Right?
Right.
This song is so good.
And for those who don't know, which I'm guessing there's a lot of this audience,
I'm very familiar with Nicki Minaj because of my teenage uh teenage daughter right i hear a lot of her stuff nikki minaj this is starships
this is the uncensored version this is the uncensored you can't play this one at bmo you
gotta play the censored version of bmo and for your daughter too no i let her in fact i actually
get mad at her i don't know if this is bad parenting or not,
but I'm like, if you're going to listen to the song,
listen to the song.
Put it into context.
Because it changes it completely.
Yeah, like keep the context of the artist and understand that this is the art.
Like it would be like censoring Huckleberry Finn.
Because then they're going to get culture shock.
So they're like, that's not the song.
I always banned the censored version from my house.
Always. Good to know. But the censored version from my house always good to
know but they censor themselves in this song because that part that goes higher than uh
it's clearly higher than a motherfucker am i right but they don't ever say that yeah
they tease she's like a tease um this song is again here it is hold on
yeah they censored themselves.
Okay, please continue.
I'm going to continue dancing
is what I'm going to do.
No, great way to end it.
This song reminds me of
if I had to pick one song
to, I guess,
define my Argos cheer
career experience
or time with them
would be this song.
So in 2013,
they had a deal where there would be an Argos
cruise ship and
two of the players and then the cheerleaders would go
and fans would go as well
to this Argos cruise.
And it went to the Caribbean. It was the first cruise experience
ever. It was amazing.
I didn't even hear about this.
Did this happen? Yeah, it happened in 2013
in February.
And it was kind of cool because it was around my birthday.
So I was like, okay, I'm on a cruise ship for my birthday.
This is awesome.
We went to Puerto Rico.
We went to St. Thomas. We went to St. Martin.
So six of us
cheerleaders, they decided we're going to
also do an Argos cheer
calendar, like a bikini calendar.
And in addition to that, they're like, well,
there was a time when a lot of the NFL
cheer teams, they were doing lip dub videos or lip dub
videos were a thing.
So we did a lip dub video
to this song.
Because I know the Harlem Shake, but
this is something else. No, the lip dub
videos. Say that word
lip dub videos. Say that word. Lip Dub? Lip Dub videos.
It's a thing.
Okay.
I take your word for it.
It was like a 2013, maybe even 14.
Sometimes I miss the things, like if they're not big enough.
But I do remember the Harlem Shake.
I remember that thing.
It's a dance move.
Lip Dub is not a dance move.
All right.
My apologies.
My ignorance has been exposed.
The Lip Dub is, just Google it.
But we did the Argos Cheers, did a lip dub to Nicki Minaj's Starships.
And it was one of the funnest things that we did.
So yeah, if you needed a song to remind me of Argos Cheer,
that's the song.
And good on you.
Finally, the barrier's been broken.
After 13 episodes,
somebody finally put a Nicki Minaj song on their jam list.
Believe it or not, no Nicki Minaj till today.
I'm actually not surprised.
But thank you.
You are welcome.
You are welcome, Mike.
And somebody, I think it was my daughter,
told me that if you slow down Nicki Minaj,
she sounds like Jay-Z.
Have you heard this one?
Or if you speed up Jay-Z,
maybe he sounds like Nicki Minaj.
Are you testing that right now?
No, I wish I was so
on the ball and flattered you think I could just
do that. I'd have to do some prep work.
Jackie, I am
so happy you came on and
kicked out the jams with me.
And I hope the Argos win the Great Cup.
I'll be watching.
From BMO Field.
The Great Cup's not in BMO Field. Got you there.
I'm talking about the regular season.
I would love
for the Argonauts PR
to send me and my family
to a game
so I can talk about it
and write about it.
For sure.
Let's discuss.
And then I can say hi
to my friends
Dawn Landry
and Jackie Perez.
Very cool.
So thanks for doing that.
And that
brings us to our
