Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi Periscope. Welcome to episode 468 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything. Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, Palma Pasta, Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair. Camp Turnasol. StickerU.com and our newest sponsor, Capadia LLP CPAs. I'm Mike from TorontoMike.com and joining me is one of TIFF 2018's rising stars, actress Jess Salguero. Rising stars.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Actress Jess Salguero. Perfect pronunciation. Practice makes perfect. I was sweating that storm all day. I'm like, I'm never going to get this. But that's Portuguese, right? Mm-hmm. I speak Portuguese.
Starting point is 00:01:22 No, I don't speak Portuguese. I shouldn't even joke about that. No, but thanks for being here. Thank you for having me. I'm happy to be here., I don't speak Portuguese. I shouldn't even joke about that. No, but thanks for being here. Thank you for having me. I'm happy to be here. And I don't know. I was looking at your, you know, impressive resume and doing my homework. And then I saw this thing about TIFF 2018's Rising Stars. And like, do they hand out a lot of those?
Starting point is 00:01:38 Like, tell me. They hand out, well, every year it's a little bit different. uh they hand out well every year it's a little bit different but what they did last year was they pick four canadians and four international actors and uh there's there's different criteria that they look for one and one being that you have a film in the festival so what film did you have in the festival um it's called mouthpiece which is actually playing at tiff right now so go check it out um it's beautiful it's some it's one of the most important projects i feel like i've been a part of is it's gorgeous but only only four canadians were recognized as so that's amazing i think that's
Starting point is 00:02:25 really cool thanks yeah it was oh my god the program itself was incredible like we essentially they put us up in a hotel for a week and they pick us up at 7 a.m do our hair makeup and then it's just like press press press press party premiere press party premiere the workshop it's like no sleep for like two weeks pretty much yeah so congrats on that thank you can you is that something you can like repeat you can't win that again like this is uh you don't get that twice no no you can't rise twice no but like some uh a couple years years ago, Stefan James got it, who was in Barry Jenkins' new film. The one after Moonlight, right?
Starting point is 00:03:14 Yeah. If Beale Street could talk. Which was very good. It should have been nominated, right? I think so too. How did it get screwed over? I don't know. I also expected Stefan to get nominated too.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I was surprised. But Regina King surprised. Um, but Regina King won. Yeah, she did win. Uh, you know, she's from two to seven. I don't, before your time, there was a sitcom called two to seven. Really? Yeah. Anyway, Regina King's fantastic. Was she amazing? Well, she was as good as you could be at a sitcom, but she's fantastic. I worked with her once. On what? The Strain., yeah, the strain. Yeah, we're going to get. So, yeah. Okay. So, let me just.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Yeah, I'm sorry. Like, so, the name didn't ring a bell with me. Jess Salguero. Did I nail it again? You nailed it again. Okay, good. I'm going to just say it a lot. It's in your body.
Starting point is 00:03:56 I'm going to keep saying it. Muscle memory. Right. But then, of course, I saw you. And I remember. The role I remember you from is working moms. Mm-hmm. Like, it's kind of a. Right. Mean. Can you be mean to me for this episode? Oh, my God. I saw you and I remember the role I remember you from his work and moms. Like it's kind of a right mean.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Can you be mean to me for this? You do not want to interview mean nanny. She's going to be extremely judgmental. No, I do actually. And she's going to be like ultra spiritual. So does mean nanny have a nose ring or she does? She's a septum ring. So does Jess Salguero. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:22 But you're not wearing it. Okay. I was like like you're right i saw a lot of like publicity photos of the what's it called septum because that's it's not through like the nostril is through the i i used to have that pierced but no it's a septum i'm checking you out here any better lighting any better lighting down here but uh all right we're gonna get back to happy stuff and uh positive things but I need to bring it down a little bit here. A little sentence.
Starting point is 00:04:46 You're from Winnipeg. I am. That's not the sad part. That's okay. Depends who you ask. Right. That's true. I actually spent today with the drummer from the Watchmen.
Starting point is 00:04:55 There's this 90. Oh, yeah. Do you know the drummer from the Watchmen or the Watchmen? What's his name? His name is Sammy Cohn. Do I know? I can't. Danny Graves is a lead singer.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yeah. I worked for him at the Lakeview restaurant. Is that on Queen? A million years ago. Dundas. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Yeah. Okay. So. He owns Motel on Queen. He owns something on Queen. Right. Okay. That's good.
Starting point is 00:05:19 So lead singer, you know, the lead singer, the drummer is a guy named Sammy and I was with him today. I did this thing at Twitter Canada and he's from winnipeg so the all of the watchmen i think except for one guy i think's from here but the the main core of the watchmen are from winnipeg yeah well the winnipeg music scene is is real like it's more than randy bachman because it's got we got randy bachman we got burton cummings right the weaker than the weaker dance are fantastic um yeah and we have like a huge like punk rock scene that's that was a big thing for me in high school is that because it's uh the weather's not good to go outside and do things so you need to like uh walk out yeah
Starting point is 00:05:57 genuinely like you nailed it that's exactly that's what happened in seattle right like it was all rainy and gloomy and they all just went and played music in their basements or their garages or whatever. Yeah. That makes sense. It's just, that's, you know, when you have nothing to do, you just bring down your guitar to your friend's basement. That's it. Oh, for sure.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Now, okay. So Mike, you're going to get sad here, right? Yes. Because, and I was going to let you off the hook here. If you're from Winnipeg, you might not know the legend of Dave Bookmanman bookie why does this sound vaguely familiar so he okay so from like i would say from the early 90s to 2012 he was a fixture on 102.1 the edge okay but then well they let him go for stupid reasons i don't know but then he got rehired he got hired by indie 88 in like 2013
Starting point is 00:06:45 and he was at indie 88 since 2013 but basically he's a big like uh indie music guy he loves music he's passionate and knowledgeable and he's been on our radios telling us what we should listen to and facts like he's just he's actually like the bet what you want from a radio personality like he's just charming. Anyway, he passed away. I know, I know. I told you we would get sad. So I'm just going to play a little bookie in memory of bookie.
Starting point is 00:07:14 He died only a couple of days ago and let the listeners know that next Thursday, Mark Weisblatt from 1236 is coming over and we're going to do a special tribute to bookie. So that's coming next Thursday, but here's a little bookie introducing the real statics at a tragically hip concert. Well,
Starting point is 00:07:33 a while ago, but let's listen to bookie. Rock and roll is about dreams. It's about passion. It's about why we get out of bed in the morning. Rock and roll is about friendships, meeting new people and sharing experiences. Rock and roll is why
Starting point is 00:07:49 we are all here this evening. Rock and roll is why life is great. It's about all you people and all the bands here. Tonight, you're going to meet new friends. You're going to share experiences. It is with that passion that the Tragically Hits Trouble in the Head House Tour welcomes you to Maple Leaf Gardens. And please welcome from Ochoa, Ontario, Wow.
Starting point is 00:08:14 The guy, honestly, he was the best. He was the best. And he was all about the love of the music, really. And I asked him twice to come on this show because he's exactly the kind of guest I'm looking to have on, and twice he politely declined. I got a very strong sense he did not want to talk about himself. And he just wasn't, you know, I know.
Starting point is 00:08:33 The guy was amazing. He did this new music night at the Horseshoe Tavern, and he's been doing that for like, I don't know, 30 plus years. It's like every single Tuesday night he would do this new music just to showcase independent music in this city. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:08:50 He's amazing and he died only 58 years old. He had a brain aneurysm. So Bookie we miss you buddy and we're gonna
Starting point is 00:08:57 we're gonna talk more about this on Thursday and now I'm gonna try to I warned you we have to get out of here. I'm here with you. I'm here with you. I'm here with you.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Are you a basketball fan? No, no. Okay. That's the end of this. No. All right. So,
Starting point is 00:09:10 uh, you're not watching tonight. Raptors one on, you know, that we're playing Sunday and it was an epic win. I remember because I was at a party and everyone was cheering. Um, yeah,
Starting point is 00:09:24 that's, you're right. It was that big win. We won by 20 points or something. And game five is tonight in Milwaukee at 830. So we're going to do our thing. And then I'm going to go watch the game with the kids. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:36 And yeah, so we're 2-2 in the series. So go Raps, go. Go Raps. You have in front of you some gifts. I want to make sure I give them to you right off the top so because we're going to talk about all the great stuff you've been doing that's a frozen vegetarian lasagna i am so here for this i'm so excited how many meals with that uh like do you have friends yeah no this is like i need to throw a party for the lasagna it's a lot of lasagna it's
Starting point is 00:10:02 amazing so that's a vegetarian lasagna palma pasta palmapasta.com they're in mississauga and oakville and they'll cater events so anyone's looking for catering they're like it's just authentic italian food it's fantastic you will you will tweet at me at some point that that's the best lasagna yeah you've ever had i can't wait and they're uh also on skip the dishes if anybody wants to uh give them a go but can't get to you know mississauga or oakville to check them out so they're great partners of the show so thank you palma pasta there's stickers so move that aside okay so what do i have for you i have uh you know now you're now can i now call you a toronto girl
Starting point is 00:10:42 like yeah oh god you've been how long you've been here 12 years i think that's i have to check the uh the rules i think no i i made the rules i am a torontonian now so there you go uh some artwork some cn tower artwork that's a sticker for you this is courtesy thank you of sticker you.com so you know where to go and of course this is i'm dying to know where these end up but there's a temporary tattoo oh my god that's hilarious and a toronto mike sticker so you can put that on your bike or wherever you like just let me know where that ends up oh i will for sure that's hilarious because i'm going to go get a tattoo after this i'm just gonna go to my tattoo artist and be like uh i changed my mind i was gonna say okay so is there a price? Like I'm serious now. Like, and you can get it wherever you want.
Starting point is 00:11:27 So wherever it can be where like bikinis hide it or whatever. But like, is there a price? I just need to know if there's a price. A price? Like, like for example, like if I gave you a million dollars, would you get a Toronto Mike? Oh my God. A million bucks?
Starting point is 00:11:41 Yeah. In a discreet place? It could be anywhere you want. Yeah, you could put it in a discreet place. Yeah, I'd do it for a million. Okay, would you do it for $50,000? No. Because we're negotiating now.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Okay. No. All right, I can't afford it. I was going to see if we can get you down to like 400 bucks. That I could do. So anybody looking to make their own customized stickers, labels, decals, temporary tattoos, you can do it.
Starting point is 00:12:07 You can order one or you can order as many as you want. These guys are in Liberty Village. They're really good people. Stickeryou.com. That's stickeryou.com. I'm actually paying them a visit tomorrow because I want to talk about swag for TMLX3. Now, TMLX3 is the Toronto Mic'd Listener Experience. This is June 27th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Great Lakes Brewery.
Starting point is 00:12:28 They're near like Queensway in Royal York. And everybody who listens to the show or has been a guest on the show gets their first beer on the house. Lowest of the Low, one of my favorite bands of all time, is playing live at this event. So this is really happening. It's amazing. It's also my birthday, but no pressure.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Oh my God. No pressure. I'll be there. No pressure. Remember, is really happening. It's amazing. It's also my birthday, but no pressure. No pressure. I'll be there. No pressure. Remember, I recorded this. I'll be there. I'll be like, Jess said she'd be here.
Starting point is 00:12:50 Listen. Really? That's awesome. So take, now since you said you'd be there, I'm going to give you a six pack from Great Lakes. I love Great Lakes. Even,
Starting point is 00:13:00 I think I gave you one of the coveted, yeah, the coveted Electric Circus beer electric circus uh stop they don't even make that right now you know this is why i moved to toronto for electric circus i swear to god monica dior uh first of all this is i want to before your time because you probably uh are too young to remember the guy who's on the cover there okay i don't know because you're like 25 years old or something i have no idea that's the cowboy he was a dancer on electric circus uh in the early days and uh yeah we we we put him on the
Starting point is 00:13:35 can of the great lakes brewery this is fantastic i might have given you two you know because uh i don't know if i did oh yeah, I did. I gave you two. You know me well. I didn't even give Master T. So Master T was here last week and I only gave him one. And he was on Munch Music. Yeah. You should just know.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Sorry, buddy. Yeah. I'm going to send them over to you to get a second one there. Okay. So you got your beer. You got your stickers. You got your pasta. You say pasta, huh?
Starting point is 00:14:04 How do you say it? I think say pasta pasta oh you know i screw up a lot of words seriously jess i screw up lots of words like you'd be i can't believe i nailed your last name it's it's it's unbelievable i did that all right so you're from winnipeg and maybe we can start if you like when did you know you wanted to be an actress like when does that strike you uh i knew i'm kind of one of those classic cases i knew pretty young that i wanted to do this um my mom said when i was like five years old she used to catch me dancing uh because my parents owned a furniture store and i used to like, she used to find me on the dining room tables dancing to a VHS tape of Elvis, like on the table all the time. And I told her that I was the reincarnation of Elvis. I don't know how I learned that word or knew what I was talking about.
Starting point is 00:14:58 That's amazing. But I always, I was always kind of performing and all that and went through my whole phase of like denying it and being like I can't be an actor oh my god would you mind so you are the reincarnation of Elvis Presley this was the song too
Starting point is 00:15:22 see that I got lucky on oh my god that's so good that's so good that's too funny yeah so um yeah i just i knew i wanted to do it i went to university of winnipeg trying to do something else because i was like being an actor is crazy who does that but did you think it was crazy uh because you were uh weren't sure it would be very lucrative or because you thought it would be such a long shot long shot and also i had no reference points in my life like i didn't know any actors i didn't know any professional actors i didn't know any professional actors. I didn't know any professional artists, period. So I mean, I grew up with like immigrants who own their own businesses and work really,
Starting point is 00:16:18 really hard seven days a week. And, you know, their their work is their identity and all that. So it was. Yeah, it totally felt like a long shot. I just, again, didn't have a role model or anyone's footsteps to follow. But you knew you wanted to be performing. Mm-hmm. I was teaching dance, and I was 18, and I was in university, and one of the dance teachers was like,
Starting point is 00:16:44 I think you want to be an actor I think you should audition for a school in Toronto and I think you should move to Toronto and I was like yeah that sounds right so she didn't want to send you straight to like LA or New York she said start at Toronto and then well I think that's what she did right so but yeah um so yeah so I auditioned I got in and i moved to toronto right away and how old are you uh when you moved to toronto not now like 18 18 okay okay cool um and you went to school here for like uh performing arts or like yeah i went to musical theater i went to a school called randolph so it's for singing dancing and acting like what's the first
Starting point is 00:17:22 thing you you were in because we're gonna roll through some of your bigger credits very soon. Okay. And what's coming. Okay. But like what's like the first thing you were in that like somebody walking the streets would know? Like do you remember the first credit where it was like something? Your friends or colleagues might actually say, hey, I've seen that. uh colleagues might actually uh say hey i've seen that i mean i remember i was on like a virgin mobile commercial that was like everywhere one summer um it was like played for movies it played
Starting point is 00:17:54 like on every station i think i remember this people used to hear like you always have this that was something that people all the time would be like you're the girl from the commercial um but i honestly the thing that i get the most recognized for is working moms yeah without a doubt i was just in new york two weeks ago and even in new york i was getting stopped on the street and i was like whoa okay it's on netflix now that's why but we got okay so let's get into that because that's kind of significant. But first, here's a little bit of Mean Nanny if people haven't seen Wrecking Girls. There's a little bit here. Where's my ice cream?
Starting point is 00:18:32 I threw it out. You told me earlier that you'd like some changes around here. So I took initiative. So great. Lionel. Okay. I just need you to clear things with me before you go and throw out a bunch of perfectly good food. Initially, I just wrote Mean Nanny because she's a mean girl. And there is an effectiveness to being a mean girl. I went
Starting point is 00:18:49 through a year of being a mean girl while I was going through an awkward phase. And I let my wit and my cruelty help me socially. Bullying should never be accepted. But as a nanny, there is something to it. The gentleness is gone and it's bare knuckles and it works with Alice. And I think it's useful for Anne. Okay, tell us whose voice that is. Oh my gosh, that's so funny. That's Katherine Reitman. She's the writer, producer, star of Working Moms. Her dad gave this speech at my convocation.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Really? Oh my gosh, that's a big deal. At Convocation Hall, yeah, yeah. Very cool. That's my connection to Katherine Reitman. Ghostbusters, yeah. Right? Oh my gosh. That's a big deal. Convocation hall. Yeah. Yeah. Very cool. That's my connection to Captain. Yeah. Right on. Right on.
Starting point is 00:19:30 Okay. So how did you get the role? Did you audition? Yeah. Audition. Um, and a callback. Luckily my callback was with Danny kind who plays,
Starting point is 00:19:42 uh, and in working moms and she plays the woman that i work for and she's like a therapist right like on the show yeah yeah and danny and i had like actor crushes on each other for years because we were both theater we were both theater actors and we'd gone and seen each other's plays and always would be like i'm dying to work with you one day i really want to work with you one day and even like we we saw it was like i think a few months before working moms before either of us got cast we'd sent messages to each other being like one day we're gonna work together and we're gonna make a million bucks and we're gonna like take over the world and i mean we didn't make a million bucks, but you almost did on that tattoo deal. Like it was close.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Be so full circle. Um, yeah. And then, so I got, I did like a chemistry read with, with Danny and because we already had this connection, I think it just, the spark was already there and, and I got the, yeah, I got the part and it was really cool. Cause Catherine really, uh, we met and we really kind of,
Starting point is 00:20:49 I got to help sort of shit shape me nanny a little bit. Like I had some ideas of who she might be. I'm sorry, the clip, I wanted more of you in the clip, but it's really hard to find me nanny clips. Oh my God. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Okay. So, okay. So this was a CBC show. Yep yep and it aired on cbc yeah and it's streamed on i mean cbc's got gem now yeah is that where it streams now like i get confused yeah it's on it's on gem now too but tell me about this uh so when does netflix start uh streaming it? It started... Like fairly recently. Yeah, it was 2019.
Starting point is 00:21:29 I think in Canada it was maybe the end of January or something. And then I think in the States it was... Or internationally it was more recent than that. I can't remember off the top of my head. Okay, but that's a big game changer, right? Yeah, it was more recent than that. I can't remember off the top of my head. Okay. But that's, that's a big game changer, right? Like once you're like, so now like you,
Starting point is 00:21:49 did you know there's more people in California than in Canada? Did you know that? I did. Fun fact for you there. Like there's lots of Americans. Like, uh, this is.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Yeah, it does. It does change a lot. Honestly, like I didn't even, I didn't even know that it was really happening um until it was announced and especially i think for the leads on the show it's a huge game changer um because the other show there's more than one but there's also okay so you've you've done at least one episode
Starting point is 00:22:22 of kim's convenience right like that show uh is also now streaming in the states on netflix yeah and i mean like working moms and i know this is gonna be my controversial take but i feel like sometimes canadians think if it's a canadian show it can't be that good you get this oh god of course yeah yeah it happens sadly it happens all the time and sometimes it's a valid assumption but less so lately like i feel like we've come a long way or whatever with production values totally and i think it's just we're taking more risks now thank goodness and i mean we might talk about it but even letter kenny yeah we will talk about it for sure i was just gonna say that show has shocked me in how americans have received it they love it like i get fans all the time reaching out about letterkenny and i was like you guys think letterkenny is funny to me i'm like whoa this is
Starting point is 00:23:17 so ontario canada right but it translates it's amazing the same thing happened with trailer park boys right exactly right we think it's our thing and then they americans love it so but what happens But it translates. It's amazing. The same thing happened with Trailer Park Boys. Right. Exactly. Same deal, right? Exactly. We think it's our thing and then Americans love it. But what happens is, just to complete my little rant here, so like we think if it's Canadian it can't be that good. And maybe we think maybe it's even cool. We might even watch it, but we don't like to admit we watch it, like whatever. But then it will go on Netflix, okay?
Starting point is 00:23:41 And a bunch of Americans will tell you, this is really funny. And then all of a sudden we're like, yeah, it's funny. It's we're funny. Like all of a sudden, we're validated. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Cause, uh, like I'm hearing, I'm reading lots of like positive things about work and moms and Kim's convenience and, uh, Schitt's Creek. That's the other big one.
Starting point is 00:23:59 You know what I mean? But you haven't yet. That's done now. You missed out on it. Is it still going? Is it done? I'm not sure. It's done. It wrapped up. We missed it. That's done now. You missed out on it. I know. Is it still going? Is it done? I'm not sure it's done. It wrapped up.
Starting point is 00:24:06 We missed it. That's okay. Maybe they'll do a TV movie or something. I love that show. God. I'd love to be on it. Anyway. So good on you for having like a memorable role on a show that seems to be gaining some
Starting point is 00:24:20 traction now that the Americans have discovered how funny we are up here. I mean, Pam, our publicist, we just had to talk about this. gaining some traction now that the americans have discovered how funny we are yeah i i mean i you know pam our publicist we just had to talk about this and am i allowed to acknowledge that pam's in the room right now or is that yeah i just i just did so hey pam um we were just talking about this on the ride over that the star system in english-speaking canada is slightly non-existent well i don't say non-existent but it's we definitely default to america when we think of stars and i mean in french-speaking canada and it's very different they have their stars they really champion their filmmakers and their artists right and i just i mean it's i think that's why we lose a lot of artists to the United States.
Starting point is 00:25:06 Well, a good example is Schitt's Creek, which stars Canadians who went to the USA to become megastars and then came back to make Schitt's Creek. Exactly. It's just like, let us make our cool stuff now. Don't make us have to move to the States to do it. Oh, that's funny. Now, I'm going to get us to Letterkenny,
Starting point is 00:25:24 and there's a bunch of other shows, and then we're going to talk about some things that are coming out. have to move to the states to do it oh that's funny now i'm gonna get us to letter kenny and there's a couple a bunch of other shows and then we're going to talk about uh some things that are coming out like okay for example like one of the shows you uh that's like in the can i guess you can say and i want to know if it's when exactly it drops is the ninth oh yeah it's dropped it's so what so today because by the way these episodes go live like 15 minutes after you leave yeah it dropped it dropped okay so what day did it drop
Starting point is 00:25:47 it dropped on like this is May 23 May 20 May 16th May 16th although it doesn't really matter when
Starting point is 00:25:57 as long as it has dropped right like because you know last week okay last week so and it's on Gem it's on CBC Gem
Starting point is 00:26:03 yeah Gem CBC Gem and this is like the streaming service from the CBC and it's out gem cbc gem yeah gem cbc gem and this is like the streaming service from the cbc and it's out there right now so we're gonna get to get to all that but and another thing i discovered when i was doing my jess homework that i think is really really fascinating but first we're going to do a couple of things one is we're gonna jump in the time machine just for a moment here so you ready okay i'm so scared we're gonna go back in time 30 years so way before you were born okay so 30 years ago this week this was the number one song on the billboard hot 100 you ready yes Hey, baby. You got to remember. You got to remember. You got to remember.
Starting point is 00:26:45 Forever you're good. Baby, forever. Forever. And ever and ever. Forever. It's funny that we were talking about... Was that before we pressed record? We talked about Farley Flex?
Starting point is 00:27:03 Yeah, that was before we started, right? On Canadian Idol. Is this with Donna? Nope. Who is this? I'm going to let it play a bit more and see if you have a guess. Pam must be older than you. She knows the answer over there.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Do you want me to help you out? I feel bad for you now. Yes. Okay. I'm trying to read lips here. I'll give you a clue. Did you ever watch any episodes of American Idol? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:31 This was a judge on American Idol. Oh, it's Paula Abdul. Correct. Oh my God. This is Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul. And number one on this day 30 years ago. Good for her. Yeah, she had a few number ones. Like she had straight up
Starting point is 00:27:50 went the number one and then she had this and she had a few more. So remember the time is brought to you by Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair. They've been doing quality watch and jewelry repairs for over 30 years. Do you wear jewelry? I do. Rings. If you ever need them like cleaned
Starting point is 00:28:05 or repaired, do you ever wear a watch? I don't, but I'm in, I'm, I feel like now is a time in my life where I could, I could rock a watch. Get a watch from Fast Time. Okay. Starting point is 00:28:34 And they're fantastic people. So Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair. Thank you so much. And thank you Paula Abdul for helping us out on Remember the Time. Even though Jess thought you were Madonna. Oh my gosh. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:28:47 I was like, I've never heard this Madonna song. This is a B-side, but it's a hit. I'm so confused. What's going on? No, your excuse is like, you're too young to remember songs that came out 30 years ago. Listen, I... I was a wee one. I'm trying to think of it.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Was I a teenager? You know what? I was a teenager when that song came out. So there you go. There you go. That's why I remember it so fondly. Okay. And Capadia.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Okay. Just today, earlier today, Rupesh Capadia came over here. And he recorded some fun facts. Now, Rupesh Capadia, I call him like the rock star accountant. He sees beyond the numbers. And we're going to share some fun facts. And I told him, I said, Rupesh, he's the rock star accountant. He sees beyond the numbers and we're going to share some fun facts. And I told him, I said, Rupesh, he's a rock star.
Starting point is 00:29:30 He had this blazer on with crossbones, like skeletons on it or whatever. And he had these big rings and killer boots. He's the coolest guy to talk to. Like just if you need to talk, sure he's a CPA and of course they get the numbers right. But he sees beyond the numbers. I said to him uh you're not our father's accountant and he digs that so not your father's accountant rupesh kapadia so let's hear from rupesh you ready this
Starting point is 00:29:57 is the first time i've ever done this and i can't wait because rupesh this is rupesh like this is him authentic and i'm all into like authenticity so let's hear from rock star rupesh, this is Rupesh. Like this is him authentic. And I'm all into like authenticity. So let's hear from rock star Rupesh. Hey, hey, hey, this is Rupesh here. And Toronto Mike listeners, this is a real fun fact for you. Did you know that you can claim almost up to $30,000 HST rebates on newly built condos

You jump on, you run by any business ideas, anything you're thinking about doing with the condos and all the HST and all these fun facts. And he'll give you best advice and he'll give you best practices.
Starting point is 00:31:00 And again, he sees beyond the numbers. So take him up on that offer. Do that. Before we get to Letter Kenny, I'm going to play this theme here. Do you recognize this theme? Yeah. It's not Madonna. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:31:23 It's okay. Is it the strain? Is this a strain? Orphan Black. Oh, it's okay is it the is it the strain is this a strain orphan black i was like i know it's a show i did what is it okay how many episodes of orphan black are you on two dos what's better than one that's twice it's It's better than one. It's okay. It's better than one. Okay. Now, Orphan Black is a big deal, right? Like, this is like an internationally successful show. Amazing. And she. Tatiana.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Right. Is amazing, right? And she was also a TIFF rising star. How long ago? This is good. Because now we can think how much time between her TIFF rising star and Orphan Black. I think she was probably a rising star like five years ago okay no okay good i have four years i like to hear like the rising stars brian cranston that's
Starting point is 00:32:11 what she's doing right now okay that's cool too yeah you know he he was the dentist on seinfeld i know he's amazing he talked to wadley so okay he converted for the jokes. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I heard it. I read his autobiography. So good. There you go. Yeah. So he, I just wondered how you just auditioned for that.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Is that how it works? Yeah. I mean, interestingly, I'm sorry. Never apologize. It's authenticity. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:43 What was interesting at that time, I really hadn't done any TV or much TV at all, and I had done a play, and a casting director had come to see it, and she was casting Orphan Black, and that's part of what got me on her, I guess, just put her in my mind, and put me in her mind and um that character is portuguese and it's very rare that you get to speak portuguese on a show or that it's written into anything so
Starting point is 00:33:16 yeah when i saw that i was like oh my god this is me this is me i gotta do this are you a soccer fan yeah like do you root for uh portugal and when portugal is out do you decide to start rooting for brazil oh god you know it you know it because i worked at the gallery of mall okay at dufferin and dupont and it was a very portuguese neighborhood and that's every that's what they did every world cup that is i don't know what the deal is but that is our deal but that's double dipping right like it is but come on we have like the smallest country ever but brazil is a powerhouse and now portugal is pretty damn good but when they had they had a dry period in the 90s or whatever and uh yeah all the
Starting point is 00:33:57 portuguese new canadians decided to wave the brazilian flags i know we do do that okay no judgments i mean i don't know i have none of my teams ever do anything so no judgment what are to wave the Brazilian flags. I know we do do that. Okay. No judgments. I mean, I don't know. I have none of my teams ever do anything. So no judgment. Well, I guess Canada hasn't been in the world cup since 1986 and we didn't score a
Starting point is 00:34:15 goal. And so I would always take on Ireland because my descent is from Ireland, but, uh, they, they haven't been in the world cup in a long time either. So I'm sorry. So you don't watch the World Cup?
Starting point is 00:34:27 No, I watch. I watch. You root for Brazil? I don't. I root for anyone but Germany. That's so of course. Gotcha. Gotcha.
Starting point is 00:34:36 So Orphan Black, and even though you messed up the theme song, is this the theme song to, is this the strain? Yes. That's it. Sorry. There's just something ominous you know what i mean it's scary there's an ominous thing in both of them and i just got a little confused for a hot sack they are similar they are very similar Who are you? You are Sherry in this train. Actually, interestingly enough,
Starting point is 00:35:11 I played two different parts on that show. Really? In the first season, I had a very tiny part of a character named Sherry. I actually had, back to the Regina King thing, I actually had a scene with Regina King that got cut, unfortunately. But anyway, that was in the first season,
Starting point is 00:35:32 and then in the fourth season, I played a different part, and the character's name's Rosalinda, and that was a really cool recurring role. I play this, I mean, I don't want to give anything away. No, don't do spoilers or whatever. But yeah, no, it's like essentially like, you know, the world is in complete apocalyptic times.
Starting point is 00:35:56 And it has a lot of echoes of Handmaid's Tale, my storyline. So I hope that gives just enough away. I know. I know. How do we get you a role on that show? On Handmaid's? Right. Tell me about it. I was at Science Center with the kids once and Elizabeth Moss was there elizabeth moss was there oh wow no no she was not who's the girl from gilmore girls rory oh yeah yeah yeah uh alexis bladel right i can't believe i called her yeah wrong one so alexis bladel was there because she was filming a handmaid's tale here and you know who she's married to because her husband was there too, who I was more excited to see. The guy from Mad Men, the guy, Peter, Pete. Pete from Mad Men. Are you serious?
Starting point is 00:36:50 I witnessed it. Vincent. Vincent Karthuizer. Yeah, I worked with him too. Did you? Yeah, on a movie called American Hangman last summer. Yeah, they have a kid together, and they were like,
Starting point is 00:37:02 all three of them were at the science center. They were married. I don't know if they're married, but they're definitely raising a child together in some kind of partnership. He's so fantastic. Is he? Yeah, he's such a great actor. He was good in Mad Men, but I don't know if I've seen him in anything else. Yeah, he plays a very disturbed individual in this film, and he's fantastic.
Starting point is 00:37:24 It's with Donald Sutherland too. Amazing. You're it's Canadian acting royalty. You're with right there. Donald Sutherland. Wow. So we're going to do a few more highlights. Uh,
Starting point is 00:37:36 but like your IMDB page is getting pretty big. Like you're working a lot, right? It's always the IMDB thing. No, it's funny. Well, where should I go to find out what you're in? I don't know It's always the IMDB thing. No, it's funny. Well, where should I go to find out what you're in? I don't know where else to go.
Starting point is 00:37:51 That is what I, that's what I look at actually. And I'm like, oh, what am I? Yeah, it's good. I mean, there's last year was, the past two years have been really, really busy and some fantastic projects. I've been lucky enough to just work on such a variety of things. So many different genres. So many different.
Starting point is 00:38:09 Lots of features. Like I did six features last year. And I did probably five. Recurrings on five series. So. So these feature movies. What's the most successful movie like you've done so far and i don't know how you measure success you can do it critically you don't have to do it commercially i mean
Starting point is 00:38:30 mouthpiece has done really well critically um which is the film that i was a part of during tiff right which is playing at the light box right now um i would say commercially. Probably it just hasn't come out yet, whatever. Whatever's next. Whatever's next. I think it did a pretty big horror film last year called Larry that starred Gillian Jacobs. She's the girl from Love.
Starting point is 00:39:02 She's from, what's it called the community right yeah yeah and and community um yes and girls um yeah she's fantastic anyway i did that that's cool last fall yeah yeah that's cool that's cool now here's a song i loaded in my soundboard and i didn't name it so i need you to tell me what this is and how it relates to your life. Okay. This is a fun game for both of us. Oh, this is letter Kenny theme song.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Okay. Here we go. Indian Wars is what it's called. So good. Such a good theme song. Bit of a cult classic, right? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Ooh!
Starting point is 00:39:59 It's making me want to go to the Dakota. The Dakota Tavern in Toronto. Of course. No, it's killer. And, and you know just being on this show i think you could forever do like comic con circuit or something like that i feel like you're in a cult show now like this is it because i have a guy from the red i had a guy who was on the red green show his name is jeff lumby okay and he's done a lot of things but like doing this handyman role on the jeff green show like that's your ticket to like, right. Like that was the ticket because there's like the fanatics of that show are like,
Starting point is 00:40:29 uh, totally. So you're, you're in now you're done. You can retire. Hopefully. Is Pam leaving us? Bye Pam.
Starting point is 00:40:37 She's going to miss the best part. We'll see if she downloads and listens. Let's talk about Pam now. She's great. Is she good? Like, so Pam's a PR talk about pam now she's great is she good like so pam's a pr person yeah she's great she's gonna listen till we and she does she work for okay she works for the ninth for the show that the ninth and which is a baseball uh show which we're gonna get to of course we're gonna spend a lot of time on the 9th. But first letter, Kenny. A lot of questions.
Starting point is 00:41:08 So you play the captain of the women's hockey team? Yep. But yet, I'm pretty sure I can tell by your raptor love you don't know anything about hockey. Oh my god. Why are you exposing me? But that's okay. I definitely know more about hockey than I do.
Starting point is 00:41:23 I'm from Winnipeg. Are you kidding me? The Jets is like, that is part, like, if you're born in Winnipeg, that is like. But you were born when there's no team. I don't know how old you are. No, we had a team. You had a team and then it went away and it came back. Yeah. It was like the worst thing that could happen to the city when we lost that hockey team.
Starting point is 00:41:41 I can imagine. I feel the spirit just completely dissipate. Because then you're just left with the Blue Bombers and you're like, what do I do all winter? Like that would be a heavy blow, I think. Oh my gosh. We had a hockey team, like I guess a... Manitoba Moose.
Starting point is 00:41:58 Yeah, the Manitoba Moose. I've seen them. They're AHL team. So they play the Marlies. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway, that was like... Yeah, it was a sad period of winnipeg history not having a hockey team but yeah so the good news for you i have
Starting point is 00:42:13 good news for you the team came back and they're pretty good you know they're they're pretty good they went out in first round this year but they're pretty good thanks and uh letter kenny you okay i got some questions so leaf Leaf, Leaf speaking of hockey, Leaf 1984 says, can you ask if they ever improvise and how often they have to break from laughing too hard? Great questions.
Starting point is 00:42:35 There is really, there's very little improv on this show. It is scripted to, it is like Shakespeare. I can imagine because of the way they talk talk it's not like you can improvise that there's a rhythm the thing is when you read that when you get your scripts it is a complete rhythm like it is it is so well thought out jared the writer uh he's just seriously this
Starting point is 00:43:00 guy is so gifted and you you don't want to break the rhythm it breaks the humor it breaks the whole tone of the show um i mean there might be other characters that improv i'm not sure but at least in my experience in any of the scenes we've done there hasn't been improv actually jay baruchel who played um uh right day what's his name uh right jay all right jay all right jay um Wright J. Alt-Wright J. Alt-Wright J. He improv'd a bit. He's a big star. He can improv.
Starting point is 00:43:32 He was genius. As far as breaking from laughter, oh my goodness. It happens all the time. All the time to me. It's called corpsing. Actors call it corpsing. I corpse all the time. That the time to me. It's called corpsing. Actors call it corpsing. I corpse all the time.
Starting point is 00:43:47 That is my biggest problem on that show. That show is such a dream and so much fun to work on. And the biggest challenge of it, genuinely, is trying not to laugh. It is so hard. So when they were going to have a role, you're called Mary Ann is your name, right? Yeah. So when they're filling the role of Mary Ann on Letter Kenny, they put out a description of when they're filling the role of Marianne on Letter Kenny like is it just
Starting point is 00:44:05 they put out a description of what they're looking for and then you just show up one day and audition? Yeah pretty much. So what were they looking for? Do you remember? Hockey chick she is a lot about like she's comfortable
Starting point is 00:44:22 chirping out other women and confident. One of the guys, but definitely not a guy. I can't remember exactly, but it was pretty clear. Yeah. Like attractive tough chick? I mean, they didn't put attractive in it. No, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:45 I mean, they're called breakdowns. The descriptions are called breakdowns. A lot of breakdowns do. The worst is when you see like, too hot to be a cop, but she's a cop. And you're like, oh my God. But yeah, so they put on a breakdown and your agents submit you. That's how it works. And is it like, I envision like, let's say they say be at this downtown place or whatever at like 1 p.m.
Starting point is 00:45:12 And then you're in like a room with a bunch of people. You have a, I mean, yes, but you have an appointment time. It's not just like a cattle call. It's like, come at 8 a.m. and line up. No, it's not. It's like, it's very professional. I mean, it's like it's very professional I mean it's as an actor it's a lot of your time this is a big deal right
Starting point is 00:45:30 this is a big bell media production sure but it also is just like as an actor you'd be oh my god if all auditions were just like come at 8am and line up and first come first serve it'd be a nightmare well maybe for ads or like that maybe like for like commercials maybe i'd say for non-union stuff maybe like the union has i've
Starting point is 00:45:51 never auditioned for anything in my life i auditioned for uh little league baseball in high park when i was like 12 and i got cut and i was so devastated i can't tell you and it was i declared like house league only from now on they can't cut you in house league and i don't think i've tried out for anything since oh my god so even this thing we're doing now like nobody can cut me from this because it's like i own and operate this is my baby like you can't fire me from this yeah i hear you i'm so upset at being cut how does that make you feel i'm upset i'm upset because i really loved and we going to get to baseball in a bit. And I'm sure you're an actress. It doesn't matter if you know about baseball to play a baseball player. I'm a huge baseball fan.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Are you? I wish. I wish. Can I say something? We've been talking for now that the PR rep has left the room. You would be really good at playing like mean nanny because you you uh are delightful like you're very wonderful to talk to but you look like you're mean like a little bit like a little badass like you look like you're mean but it's like there's a contradiction you sound nice but
Starting point is 00:46:57 you look like you're gonna rip me a new asshole that's really interesting because okay so i okay not to like get too ahead, but I'm on this show called The Expanse that will be, I'm on the fourth season, which is coming out later this year, which is like a pretty big deal. And for my, for me, because it's like. Is this a Canadian show? No, no, no. It's an American show.
Starting point is 00:47:22 It's on. Does that mean more money? Not necessarily. Okay necessarily sometimes it does um but yeah anyway uh i play like a really badass character on this show like i'm a character from the books this series is based on a bunch of books and this character is really really really tough and my first day the the writer of the books who's also a writer on the show was like so interesting like when i'm talking to you in person you seem so nice yeah but then when you're in front of the camera you're like you tap in you're pretty terrifying and i was like it's interesting because when i've met other actors
Starting point is 00:48:02 that i've felt the same way around where i'm like, whoa, they're really nice, but they're like intimidating on camera or whatever. It's always that they're so nice in real life. Like I find that in order to sometimes access that. Right. You have to have the light. Like it's. Or you need to lean heavy on the light when you look so angry you know what i mean like it's like you need to you need to win people you'd be like it's okay i'm nice i promise like
Starting point is 00:48:30 overcompensate like because you look like you look like you're about to curse me out for something like and but so you have to be super nice to like yeah to overcompensate yeah that's totally possible i've never really thought about that, but yeah. Well, you should because when you're trying to,
Starting point is 00:48:48 when you're looking for that role, and I don't want to use the B word, but you use it like crazy. We're going to get to this later too. It's like big teeth.
Starting point is 00:48:54 Yes, which is like my favorite thing you've done, by the way. I don't, I think that was my, like when I'm doing the homework
Starting point is 00:48:59 and I'm like, who is this woman who's going to be visiting before the Raptor game? Yeah. Say it again, bitches be witches? Bitch's going to be visiting before the Raptor game? Yeah. Say it again. Bitches be witches. Bitches be witches.
Starting point is 00:49:07 It's a website I run. That's the best thing. That's the best thing you've done. Thanks. If all apologies to like. I really. Thank you. I appreciate that.
Starting point is 00:49:15 And no one can cut you from that because that's yours, right? No, no, no. Does that feel good? It does. It feels so good. Right. And that doesn't. And this is also what think i'm gonna see
Starting point is 00:49:27 if this feels good uh like that only exists bitches be witches and later i'm gonna play some spoken word stuff and we're gonna talk about all this but bitches be witches only exists because you gave birth to it like you made that and now it exists in this world we live in. It wouldn't exist if you didn't make it. That's amazing. Am I crazy? No, I feel you. And obviously, you know the same feeling. It's a creator, creator feeling.
Starting point is 00:49:56 I feel like I'm God. Yeah, creatrix. Yeah, no, it feels amazing. And I created it because it's something that I wanted. I wanted a resource site. Well, this is a teaser you can't do it yet get the whole line to it because i'm actually even so that expanse yeah you're excited about that even though i'm bringing you back to letter kenny because we haven't finished my life so um i'm gonna play some of letter kenny okay you're in this clip. Where are you there. All right. Oh, oh, I'm sorry. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:50:49 What the? What are you two doing? Sorry, boys. Ladies. We didn't know you were ladies, boys. Not lady boys. We didn't know you were ladies. You think the door is open to everyone here?
Starting point is 00:51:00 Just because Mary Ann looks like she's homeless doesn't mean you can treat it like a shelter. Fuck you, Betty Ann. But she's right. Doors don't open to everybody here. Just because her mitt looks like she's homeless doesn't mean you can treat it like a shelter. Fuck you, Betty Ann. But she's right. Doors don't open to everybody here. Just because her mitt looks like the back of Christ's head doesn't mean you can treat it like a church. Fuck you, Marianne. Your mitt looks like Babe Ruth's ball glove from the dirty 30s of 20 more dudes spat chewing tobacco in it.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Your mitt's actually a work of art, Betty Ann. Like Salvador Dali's melting clocks. But instead of melting clocks, it's melting salad bowls of off-pink ice cream. I love ice cream, Mary Ann. I love all frozen treats. Your mitt looks like I squeezed a cherry red popsicle with a handful of dryer lint. Meet your new team,
Starting point is 00:51:38 pheasants. I could just listen to this for the rest of the show. Is this about a name change? If anybody should change their names, it should be us. What the hell's a shamrock at anyway? A leaf with tits? for the rest of the show. Screaming banshees. That's good, Marianne. Impressive creativity. Couple of hens clocking away. Especially for a girl who had to start kindergarten two years late because she couldn't grasp coloring. I have plenty of good ideas, Betty Ann.
Starting point is 00:52:13 Like convincing your dad to get a vasectomy so I wouldn't have to worry about another you coming into the world while I fucked him. We were just starting to get them under control. You're screwing it up, bro. All right. Holy shit. Do you want me to keep going?
Starting point is 00:52:31 No, it's cool. So, yeah control you're screwing it up bro all right do you want me to keep going so yeah you're mean like you're typecast i'm afraid you're gonna be typecast you're gonna be a mean girl true do you ever play a role where you're like a sweetie oh my god you sound like my mom my mom's like can you just be cinderella or something i'm like no um but that's fantastic here and that was a rhetorical i mean i mean it's fun to i mean i like playing everything uh i actually play a really sweet girl in a new show called the boys okay the boys okay you have so much new things it's amazing okay so let's okay first of all i the guy who wrote the book that private eyes was based on was here just recently cool gear joys so that's the jason priestly show and you played uh you played on that something on that yes was it one episode it was just one that's all right never one is good don't worry i love that character though it was really fun charmaine uh my mom really likes saving hope oh and you're nurse Cabrera. Yes.
Starting point is 00:53:26 And like, that's more than one. Yeah. I did two seasons of that show. Uh, I don't know how many episodes I think it did. 12 episodes, 11 or 12 episodes.
Starting point is 00:53:35 That's cool. Um, yeah, it was good. It was like not a massive part. I kind of come in and be like, follow me or here's the files. But that job taught me so much about being on set. And I just,
Starting point is 00:53:53 just watching the other actors and seeing how a set works, because that was the first time I was ever recurring on a show. And, uh, speaking of recurring on a show, uh, Mary kills people. Like this is a popular show yeah yeah amazing show beautiful show uh yeah also really that character's not tough she's really
Starting point is 00:54:15 sweet okay and larissa is yeah yeah she's she's she's really sweet um well i'm not gonna watch mary kills people because i like it when you're mean. So I'm glad you're letting me know. But please, what were you going to say there? No, just that actually that show is finishing. They're on their last season. But it was a really powerful plot line to be a part of, for sure. I just really respect the creators of that show a lot okay
Starting point is 00:54:47 before we get to bitches be witches let's talk about um let's talk about the ninth okay and i have a i'm trying to think do i play the trailer first or do i play brian gerstein he is a real estate sales representative with psR Brokerage. He actually recorded a question for you. So maybe we'll start with that. Okay. And then we'll play the trailer. Cool.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Hi Jess, Brian Gerstein here, sales representative with PSR Brokerage and proud sponsor of Toronto Might. Call or text me at 416-873-0292 if you're interested in any new condo developments, not just the upcoming Galleria Mall condos that my brokerage is selling. I can handle all the due diligence for you to determine if it is a project worth living in or investing in. I just got VIP access to The Whale in King West with the first building selling mid-June. Jess, first being a huge baseball fan and recreational player, I absolutely love the trailer I saw of you in
Starting point is 00:55:52 CBC's The Ninth. It looks very risque for CBC, which is great and reminds me of Ball 4 with the real goings-on behind the scenes. How much fun is it to work on a show like this, which I expect to be a huge success for you? The Ninth, which is now out.
Starting point is 00:56:10 Last week, I heard it dropped on Gem. It did. Last week. On CBC Gem. By the way, I'm going to watch this. Yeah, you can stream. What's great is it's eight episodes and each episode's 12 minutes,
Starting point is 00:56:22 so it's like you're watching a movie. 12-minute episodes. That's my dream uh length i think that's amazing it is it's honestly like it feels like the perfect the perfect length for this kind of so can you is this like a new emerging format like i don't know like yeah we're used to like half hour shows yeah it's essentially digital series uh but now networks producing digital series. So it's sort of like meeting in the middle of the two worlds. Interesting. Let's hear the trailer, and then we'll talk more about the ninth. First is make-out, second is up the shirt, third is down the pants.
Starting point is 00:56:58 Hey, hang on. You mean a BJ and a Handy are on the same base? This is a game of focus and concentration. You gotta live in the moment so fully that nothing can distract you. I see you could ask me any questions. You drop. You give me 20 right now. Okay.
Starting point is 00:57:14 And you can tell them about your best catch ever. Herpes. I'm surrounded by losers. You put Gold Bond in my Gatorade. How do I look? Like a heroin addict. You? You got no balls.
Starting point is 00:57:26 Thanks, nerd. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're gonna do I look? Like a heroin addict. You? You got no balls. Thanks, nerd. Whoa, whoa, whoa! You gonna up the curtain? Shut up, Andy! You're out of here! Ah! The box brings! Woo!
Starting point is 00:57:36 I'm very, very drunk. Three shots of tequila. You guys want anything? My legs feel weird. Cement mixer, prairie fire, gorilla puke, and the Boilermaker. Reverse cowgirl, flying saucer, and pile driver. For practice?
Starting point is 00:57:53 Hold still, will ya? Just thinking like, open. This is what it's like to be a deer. No, this is not a drug dial. You feeling it? No. No, no, no, no, no, no. We should never let a boy come between us.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Unless we're like tag-timming him in a threesome. Baseball isn't about winning or losing. It's how you play the game. Oh, and then we all say amen. Amen! Alright, good game everybody. Amen to that. I gotta know okay epic yeah and you've watched you've watched this oh yeah like i don't know if you're in a movie like do you watch okay uh not you honestly sometimes i do sometimes i don't
Starting point is 00:58:37 but i did watch the show because it was such a digestible chunks yeah i'm so excited that how many episodes eight eight twelve minute episodes yeah yeah and like on gem so gem like people who don't keep should we rewind a bit and just tell people what gem is like do people know what gem is well i don't know is it because it seems like i would just say the cbc is streaming it is how i would say it but they re they just rebranded this yeah thing gem i think that's exactly what it was and now there's like an app like i have this the gem app on my phone and um so it's easy to it's just yeah it's all there and it's easy to stream who do you play on uh the ninth my character's name is messy jesse message and your name is jess i know is that is that like by coincidence or uh good question i know the writer michael we we've worked
Starting point is 00:59:28 together before and when he wrote this part he asked me to audition and um i was sort of like michael give me break you wrote this part for me and he's like he's like i didn't write it for you but anyway what was crazy was at the callback. So the second audition, when we did chemistry reads with the character, with the other actors. Yeah. Um,
Starting point is 00:59:52 he's, he gave me a bit of direction. He said, um, messy Jesse. It's as if she has. Didn't, didn't,
Starting point is 00:59:59 didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't, didn't that night of the Roxbury song. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:00:04 Um, you're not doing a good job with the night of the rocks can you just can you just do it can you do it um you find it later okay um um but anyway it's like he was like it's as if uh that song is playing on her head and repeat all the time and i was freaking out because i was like michael on the way to this audition i had that song on repeat and i even like made an instagram story about it because i was driving in from out of town and you're not supposed to make okay okay um but anyway i was like i was freaking out i was, Michael, I like just was listening to this song every beat. Did you watch my Instagram story or something?
Starting point is 01:00:48 He's like, no, I didn't. And I was like, okay, if I don't get this part, nothing makes sense in the world. Messy Jesse tap. And are you, you're good at, you're a good. I'm really good. Actually. I'm like the best person on the team. Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:58 So when you're, is there baseball action in this? There is. Yeah. Like, okay. Cause did you have somebody helping you to look like someone who's good at baseball yeah we did genuinely yeah we did we had um a lot of the other actors that they brought on to play the other baseball teams that we were playing were actually really skilled baseball yeah right really skilled baseball players so they were giving us pointers we also had like a couple rehearsals before we started filming with people
Starting point is 01:01:27 who play, I wouldn't say professionally, but play seriously in the city. Yeah. Amazing. Now. Okay. So are you the star of the show?
Starting point is 01:01:40 I'm one of the stars. It's, it's definitely an ensemble show. So there's eight of us, but you're the, I'm one of the stars. It's definitely an ensemble show. So there's eight of us. But you're the mean nanny. I feel like you're the star. You're the mean nanny.
Starting point is 01:01:54 Am I right? Like, that's, you know. I'm the mean nanny. No disrespect to these other wonderful cast members. They're all wonderful. But you're the mean nanny. I think you're the star. No, I'm not. This is a really, truly, really, truly an ensemble piece.
Starting point is 01:02:08 Like we all, I think, especially when you watch it, you'll see the cast of this is just so, so strong. Okay, so if it's streaming only, what's the, like how do you measure success of this show? Is it like, does CBC have some kind of like number of streams? I guess so. I guess so. measure success of this show is it like does cbc have some kind of like number of streams so i guess so uh i would assume that's how it works um and likely that information will inform us if we do a season two okay um which at this point i have no idea now i'm gonna ask a couple of
Starting point is 01:02:40 personal questions now and you can tell me to f off or whatever but like when cbc makes like eight 12 minute episodes of something i just can't imagine um like do you do it mainly for like branding purposes and do you know where i'm going i did it for fun purposes right i did it because i love the like again michael the writer the creator of the show michael wrote the role for you you needed to do this or he'd have no he'd have to write a different character for me but but i just knew i was gonna have a blast doing it it was it was genuinely because i just knew it was gonna be fun and i was very much on a comedy kick all of last summer now i don't have a lot of believe it or not i actually don't have a lot of tv uh actors and actresses on this program like you're a rarity i'm trying to think of i'm trying to think because i i have a lot of radio people yeah and a lot of like sports media people and
Starting point is 01:03:37 i like a lot of musicians and a lot of different people come on the show, but I honestly, very few, uh, I don't know who else from the acting world, but I, uh, have this, uh, perception that, uh, Canadian acting is not very lucrative and you're all starving artists.
Starting point is 01:03:54 Like, do you, do you have a home? Like, do you, do you, what do you, do you live,
Starting point is 01:03:58 do you live in a, under a bridge? Um, I, that's an interesting question because I mean, yes, there is a major incentive for a lot of Canadian actors to go to the States. Um, however, I have been able to work really consistently and make, make a living for the past three or four years completely solely on acting. Which is amazing.
Starting point is 01:04:29 So you're not working like selling like shoes or something. No. I mean, I was a waitress for a long time, but not for the past three or four years. That's amazing. So you're living like your parents aren't sending you money or whatever. You're living off your acting. To me, that's amazing that so you're you're you're living like your parents aren't sending you money or whatever you're living off your acting yeah to me that's that's everything like yeah like because you love acting it's it is it truly it's like the biggest accomplishment is that and i hope
Starting point is 01:04:56 that i can sustain that and um the the thing that's great for being an okay it depends where you are in your career when When you're starting out, Toronto's actually an amazing place because a lot of American productions shoot here and they want to cast locals for smaller parts. Like The Handmaid's Tale. Yeah, sure. Okay, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:05:16 Or like The Boys or The Expanse or The Strain or pretty much most of the features I've done right have been american um do they have to hire locals or is it just it's tax breaks they get major tax breaks if they hire locals that's good i like this yeah so it's really good for for actors at a certain point yeah and then which is sort of the point i'm kind of edging at, where you want to start playing leads, that's when you start to, unfortunately, see a lot of actors go to the States, is because they're still going to cast the leads out of LA.
Starting point is 01:05:53 Like Elizabeth Moss. Yeah, sure. You have to dumb it down. That's because I have to, yes. You're right. The stars are imported from the States with these American things that film here. And a lot of the supporting roles are filled by local actors and often you'll see somebody on one of
Starting point is 01:06:09 these shows like i'll see somebody on actually good examples there's a character on the handmaid's tale because i don't watch a lot of tv but i watched that one and it's like oh yeah she's the girl from kim's convenience or i'll see someone else and i'll be like oh yeah she's in that annoying commercial where they want to change their like financial advisor or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:28 Like you recognize them. Oh, that one's from the Swiss Chalet commercial I saw or whatever. So, okay. Very cool. So would you consider moving to the States to further your career? I mean. Or are you like, like you've got a ticket already? Well, I have a work visa.
Starting point is 01:06:45 I have an agent in LA and stuff. I usually spend the winters in LA. And I, yeah, I mean, it's all about, it's funny because you're asking me a question that's like very poignant at this part of my life where i'm really this is the real talk we got rid of relocate and stuff no good we got rid of pam the uh she was watching very closely we got rid of her so it's just us now she's not gonna listen you're you're leaving us like i already know i can tell by your tone you're leaving us it's fine
Starting point is 01:07:21 because i mean michael j fox did it like i'll run down a list of everyone who left us okay like jim carrey did it you know mike myers did it i'm gonna it's a long lengthy list of people who left us because they you know it's like a fish i think like you have to you needed a bigger uh aquarium right it's okay like i mean i don't all great ones i don't feel i i've never felt like oh my god i need to go see my like the hollywood thing i i love california because of the climate more than anything but i just want to work on great projects and wherever that is in the world is where i want to be and a lot of that is going to be funded by american streaming services or American networks or whatever. But that doesn't mean it's going to be in the States.
Starting point is 01:08:09 Like a lot of the awesome shows actually do end up filming here. But yes, like I said. Go do the Eugene Levy thing. Go. And then you can come back later. Yeah. Right. That might be that might be what happens.
Starting point is 01:08:22 OK. So genuinely. OK. That might be what happens. Genuinely. Okay. I actually, now that we've known each other for an hour and eight minutes, I can tell you, you need to go. I hate to say this, but like you've got your, yeah, I'm serious.
Starting point is 01:08:33 Because how many, you can only do so many of these things here and you're doing a great job. I mean, Letter Kenny is fantastic and everything. And it really is. And the ninth, I hope it's a, I'm going to watch it. Like there's a Raptor game tonight, but I'm going to watch the ninth tomorrow. Right on.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Like just, just to see you in this thing. I'm going to watch it on jam. I can't wait. But you know, you got to go there and just at least give it a go while you're young. Like I'm going to guess you don't, you don't have right now.
Starting point is 01:08:58 You don't have like kids in a mortgage and all that garbage. No, not that it's garbage. I mean, I have all those things, but, but like it's now or never like you'll you'll live with regret if you don't go and see what happens and so if
Starting point is 01:09:11 you fail and you come back that's all good too i mean that's fine that's fine go for it go for it in fact thanks you saw this show you're giving me that extra push maybe i know i'm gonna like i'm gonna i'm gonna make you go i'm gonna follow up yeah um what's the goodwill hunting do you remember the scene in goodwill hunting when ben affleck is waiting for matt damon they're doing the was it construction work or something and ben affleck was like his favorite part of the day is that moment where he thinks matt's not gonna show up because matt's too good for that shit you know what i mean like you need to go you're not that you're too good for us but you need to go where the,
Starting point is 01:09:46 the action is and then give that your best shot and see how it goes. You have to do that. True. Thank you. And okay. Anything else you want to add? Any questions or anything during this pre-therapy session? I know I got to wrap up with you here,
Starting point is 01:09:58 but I have a, before I do the bitches thing. Yeah. Yeah. A mean way to say that, but you mentioned the boys a couple of times. So tell me what the boys is. Yes. Yeah. A mean way to say that, but, uh, you, the, but we mentioned the boys a couple of times. So tell me what the boys is. Yes.
Starting point is 01:10:07 Okay. The boys is gonna, it's an Amazon series. It's based on a comic book, um, by Garth Ennis. It's, uh,
Starting point is 01:10:13 it's called the boys. Um, it is executive produced by Seth Rogen and, um, he left. Yeah, he did. And look at him.
Starting point is 01:10:22 Yeah. And we still love him. Yeah. We'll love you more once you're a big star down there i know like seriously it's ridiculous guys we'll know your name and don't change your name either because thank you i'm not going to okay because it's too late it's not the 30s anymore when you would have because in 1930s or 1940s you would have had to change your name totally um so yeah the show is um oh my gosh it's i i went to the premiere at tribeca two weeks ago at the tribeca film festival in new york this show is
Starting point is 01:10:55 so fantastic i'm just so excited about it it is um essentially it's about superheroes but the twist is that the superheroes have major fallibilities and flaws and are not necessarily good people um it's so smart it's so dark it's so funny and it's it's twisted and it really makes you think and it's also like a major reflection of some of what is going on in the world right now. We like anti-heroes. Like we like the flawed hero. Oh, then you're going to like this show. Like a Tony Soprano.
Starting point is 01:11:31 I'm just thinking of, you know. Oh, yeah. Who do you play on The Boys? I play the lead's girlfriend. Her name's Robin. I can't say too much about the character because it really... did you sign something like did they make you sign something an nda right yeah yeah yeah so be careful now because i don't i
Starting point is 01:11:53 don't edit this show so you gotta be very careful no i can say who i play i play robin um if anyone's read the comic books they know what happens uh to my character um but otherwise wait till july 26th and it's coming to amazon streaming uh right cool that's cool okay bitches be witches yeah let me play actually i'm gonna play this after okay i talk to you're in that wonderful time you don't have any kids it's a wonderful time i'm jealous of you i don't even remember those times that's wonderful i'm so happy for you no i'm just kidding i love my kids but you don't have kids but if anyone listening has children between the ages of 4 and 14 it is late may what the heck are you doing you've got
Starting point is 01:12:44 to put your kids in a summer camp and the best thing to do is the French camps from Camp Tournesol because then you can watch their French skills blossom over the summer now is the time, pause this podcast and go to campT.ca and check out the
Starting point is 01:13:00 overnight programs and the day camps that Camp Tournesol has they've got a whole bunch of stuff, whether your child is francophone, French immersion, or has no French experience. They have a day camp or overnight experience for them. So campt.ca. And when you do register your child or children for a camp at Camp Ternasol, and you really should, they've been doing it since 2001 for tens of thousands of children in the gta use the promo code mike 2019 mike 2019 and you save some money and you let them know you heard about them on toronto mic and this is a terrible segue from a wonderful french camp to this but let's hear a
Starting point is 01:13:40 little and i didn't do the whole it's a very long piece it's fantastic by the way thank you it's like my favorite thing you've done but i haven't seen the boys yet or the ninth i'm sure the ninth is great too but let's hear this these stories were constructed with the utmost corruption as to avoid another disruption of adam's earthly sacred function calling me a bitch brings back to me thousands of years of lies and patriarchy no one one was destined to be a slave. My moral and sexual repression will not be punishment for my first mother's sin. Deception skewed our perception. The past few thousand years are religious men's inception. Let's make the connections. Whenever paganism is mentioned, it's with discredit and objection. Goddesses are myths
Starting point is 01:14:20 met with contemporary rejection. Maybe for a second, let's contend that not everything was as the Bible read or textbook said. That the thread that weaves together locks me after Daddy Hecate is not dead, but was seen as a threat to the crusaders of the West. That's just like an excerpt. That's heavy stuff. Okay, so what is that piece that I took from?
Starting point is 01:14:39 What is that called? Okay, so it's a spoken word piece called Bitch. I wrote it years ago. And when I started this website that I run called Bitches Be Witches, which the log line of that is it's an online publication where feminism meets the divine feminine. I revisited this poem I had written and was like, oh, wow, this is totally in alignment with what we're
Starting point is 01:15:06 doing which is essentially trying to create a space where we profile women who we believe are reference points for younger women it's often people who've followed their own intuition carved out their own path we also have like rituals for different points in your life it's about reclaiming the idea of a witch as an empowered woman and someone who really listens to herself and her environment and is is reluctant to adopt the status quo's expectations of her. She began writing on this website in her mid-20s after not getting her period for two years. There's nothing funny about that. I'm being all serious here.
Starting point is 01:16:02 I have two daughters. I know. I'm here for it. I'm here for it. I'm just surprised you went there. you went there i'm here for it though i know i'm quoting something additionally she was dealing with serious body dysmorphia issues so now uh tell us but uh let me play a little doctor here so So trying to stay thin is a pressure you women deal with? Absolutely. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:16:27 Yeah, yeah. Especially as an actor too. Yes, I can imagine. Have you ever been asked to do a nude scene yet? Oh, yeah. I've done tons of nude scenes. Is that right? You didn't do your homework.
Starting point is 01:16:39 I didn't do enough. I didn't see any on Working Moms. I'm just kidding. But I have done nude scenes, yes. There are nude scenes on Working Moms though. There is. I've seen boobs on on working moms. I'm just kidding. But I have done nude scenes. Yes. There are nude scenes on working moms though. Not you, but I've seen, I've seen boobs on working moms.
Starting point is 01:16:47 Totally. Now in this effort to stay very thin, uh, that, uh, somehow that can mess with your, uh, with your menstrual cycle.
Starting point is 01:16:55 Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, if you don't have enough, uh, fat, really it's fat.
Starting point is 01:17:01 If you don't have enough fat on your body, you're not going to be, um, cycling. Uh, I didn't really like to say properly, but cycling, fat really it's fat if you don't have enough fat on your body you're not going to be um cycling uh i didn't reluctant to say properly but cycling in your body's natural the way that your body wants to naturally do that menstruate is that the word yeah yeah yeah um okay so this is i think this is very good that you have this uh place you can like, what do you say? A never-ending catalog of inspiration that you can share with.
Starting point is 01:17:30 Because today you're a fierce woman. I like the word fierce. You're a fierce woman. Me too. And so that's fantastic. And I really do urge everybody to check out. So Bitches Be Witches. Is it like bitchesbewitches.com?

Amazing be witches.com yeah that's it amazing amazing that's it now um and we encourage people to contribute like it's like we release a theme like the theme right now is sisterhood and if anyone has like a think piece an essay a poem uh anything that's even mixed media that that that meditates on that subject we will include it so yeah jess salguero that's amazing like did you have a good time i did i had such a great time you asked me great questions and i got a lasagna to go home too i'm so excited you got beer lasagna stickers you get a free consultation with rupesh cabadilla like and you can get your uh watch from fast time watch and repair and again you're in an apartment i don't think you should buy a condo
Starting point is 01:18:29 because i think you should move to uh california so brian i'm sorry but maybe an investment property hey yeah totally you can't lose one of those real estate in this uh with all my american money right get those greenbacks get Get your greenbacks. Amazing. That thing, I don't know what you called it again. The nose. Septimering. Does it go, is it in? No, it's not in my nose right now.
Starting point is 01:18:52 No, but is it, so there's a hole in your nose. Yes. Okay. I don't know. I was like, I honestly was expecting to see it because in all the publicity shots, you know. Oh, yeah. Maybe it was, maybe it's just something that sits in there, but doesn't go through a hole. I've been wearing it lately.
Starting point is 01:19:03 I don't know what that's about, but just not feeling the need. Well, you don't want, you don't have to wear it. And if that, that nose thing, uh, I can't remember the word you said, even though you said it two seconds ago, but if it needs, uh, repairs, you know who to go to. You're all set. Thank you.
