I've never been in love.
She won't get married because she's never been in love.
I think I wrote that. It was to sell nylons.
For a lot of people, love isn't just a slogan.
Oh, you mean love. You mean a big lightning bolt to the heart
where you can't eat and you can't work
and you just run off and get married and make babies.
The reason you haven't felt it is because it doesn't exist.
What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell nylons.
It's time now for Pandemic Fridays, starring Toronto Mike, Stu Stone, and Cam Gordon.

I'm Mike from torontomike.com
and joining me for this 48th Pandemic Friday
is Cam Gordon and brother Bill.
What? Him again?
Back by popular demand. How's it going guys pretty good pretty good what was
that mad men you played off the top what was that mike yeah and that was the pilot episode smoke
gets in your eyes and it's one of my very favorite that along with the carousel speech and my two
favorite don draper spiels in the history of Mad Men.
And Mad Men,
that's a series you actually watched,
right,
Cam?
I,
yeah,
I see it.
I find it interesting in an episode where we're going to be talking about
love.
You pick a two timing Lothario,
like Don Draper was a,
I guess he,
he loved lots of women based on his philandering.
He loved many.
And he,
remember love was invented by men like him
to sell nylons.
I haven't seen
that show at all. So Mad Men,
what's his name? Don?
Don Draper. Is that Jon Hamm?
Yep. The guy from
the Skip the Dishes commercials?
I knew you were going to say that, yes.
Yeah, because those are good. I like those,
but I've never seen an episode of Mad Men,
and obviously if Cam has seen it,
it's a must-go-to viewing pleasure.
It's a short list of shows
that I've actually watched
in the last quarter century.
That's worth it by the sounds of it.
That just means it's not particularly funny, right?
That's part of it because
cam doesn't like funny very much i don't laugh so okay so much here so much here firstly i just
want to tell people that uh we're live so if you're hearing this and you didn't know we were
live then you can't see us because we're gone now but live.torontomic.com is a live stream we're
doing this for every pandemic friday and i am keeping my eye on the real-time comments.
For example, Michael Lang here wants to know,
Cam, are you allowed to be on Facebook?
Because I'm also trying to live stream on Facebook here.
Is that allowed?
Is it allowed?
It's like AOL in the 90s.
I get five hours a month.
Yeah, you have a certain amount of time.
Automatically gone. Yeah, I'm a certain amount of time. Automatically gone.
Yeah, I'm on Facebook.
You're okay with that?
It's good to know how all the platforms work.
You got to keep your eye on the competition.
And YYZ Gord, I think that's the same as Midtown Gord, I have to confirm.
But he says, is it just me or was Mike mouthing the lines from that show?
So I was not mouthing the lines from Don Draper at the beginning,
but I could have.
That's like an iconic line
he delivers in that very first episode
of Mad Men.
And if you haven't seen Mad Men,
you really should
because it's freaking awesome.
I will.
I was going to say,
how did it end?
But maybe that would be a spoiler.
I'll tell you.
I don't want to tell people.
No, don't.
Yeah, don't, don't, don't, don't.
Don't.
I really want to watch it because so many people,
including yourselves and yourself, Cam, have said it's worth the time.
So I want to see that.
Is there a way to talk around it without giving it away?
No, I'm not touching the finale.
What was that, Cam?
I was going to say, I can give a thought that fellow podcaster Bill Simmons,
he fantasy book,
the ending of Mad Men. And it wasn't really anything to the plot,
but just that it would end right at the stroke of midnight on December 31st,
1969. And then when it went into the seventies and then the show was over, which I kind of liked, I kind of liked that idea. It didn't end that way, but.
Did you watch Cam? I know this isn't our subject, but did you watch the Sopranos at all?
Yeah.
Like the shows I saw the Sopranos, Mad Men, the Wire, and I think Breaking Bad.
Those, those are probably the only shows I've really watched.
So do you remember who the, I believe it was either the producer or the creator of the Sopranos was?
David Chase.
It's David Chase, right?
David Chase.
So I just started watching a show on this station we get out here in the West called MeTV, which is sort of like, maybe you have it too.
They show a lot of classic television shows.
And they're really starting to go deep with their dives on the show because
I'm getting a show and maybe this is,
I'm a little older.
Maybe you guys don't remember this at all.
Maybe you've got big brothers or sisters who do,
but do you remember a show called cold check the night stalker?
I do not know.
That sounds scary.
It was,
it was terrifying.
And I used to watch it when I was about five or six,
and I literally would have nightmares.
Well, I just started watching it again
because it's on this station called MeTV,
and the creator of Kolchak the Night Stalker
is a David Chase.
Ooh, the same guy?
I don't know.
That's why I was sort of bringing it up
because, Cam, I know you know a lot about everything.
He was too young. I don't think it could be him. Throw it out because, Cam, I know you know a lot about everything. He was too young.
I don't think it could be him.
Throw it out there.
Yeah, I don't know.
I don't even know why I Googled that.
That sounds too scary.
I'm delicate.
That would sound scary at night, soccer.
Breaking news, everyone.
YYZ Gord is not Midtown Gord.
So we have two Gords.
I just want to point that out.
You can never have enough Gords.
Complicated.
Just like Brother Neil is not neil talks
right so brother bill who we have with us today is of course the the uh famous brother bill and
you know the feedback on last week's uh pandemic friday on brit pop the feedback was
such that i had to get i did basically i, I told Stu, take another week off, buddy, because I had,
I had to bring back brother Bill because people loved what you and Cam
brought to the table with regards to Brit pop last week.
It was amazing.
I was tired after last week.
I'm not going to lie.
I was,
I was spent,
I was exhausted.
And,
and Cam,
I thought you and I were like a couple of guys battling at Wimbledon or something in the final of the men's singles, going back and forth about Britpop.
And Mike, you would throw some stuff in there too, which just like would throw both of us.
It was exhausting last week.
I was really grateful that you guys asked me on, but I went for a walk before this episode just so i was kind of limber because i
wasn't sure how badly i was going to get beaten up again this week i was gonna say this was a
sort of a sneaky bullseye for the fotm universe i know uh avid listeners including andrew ward
seem to have a deep knowledge of this topic uh i'm trying to think james uh oh my god blank on
james's last name there's a few yeah james edgar throughout some uh ton of fun facts i mean uh
cambrio brought it as usual oh yeah always always i mean it's yeah that was that was those good
times one thing i meant to bring up on that episode have an overall thought is just how much
i miss being really into British
bands. Because I was trying to think who was the last
British band I got super into.
Similar to TV, it hasn't
happened in a while, but I
think it was the Libertines when they
had their first two albums.
Which were awesome. But even that is like
20 years ago now.
The first Libertines album came out.
It's been a while but can i just
say again i thank you guys so much for having me back but you know i i i want to make sure that
people and thank you to everybody who i i heard from some people via twitter and and watching the
the the conversations going back and forth on social media and and i really appreciate all
the kind words and even some of the bad words too um but you know that's you got to take critic critical acclaim too
i suppose but i want to make everybody sure that they know once again that by no means am i here to
replace the mighty stew stone there's just no way i hope I've been clear about this. Stu is in the US of A doing
a gig. He's making money doing
a gig. And quite honestly, Stu
is unable to record with us.
And brother, you've been amazing that you're filling
in for Stu. We're honored that
we have you as a substitute, Stu.
Well, I'm honored that I would be even
considered to be in place
of Stu Stone. But I know Stu is probably
listening to this and uh i know
that you know you guys have done multi editions of this what is this 40 46 did you say mike 48 48
okay i just hope stew knows how important he is to this this show because i don't think without
the three of you it doesn't the chemistry isn't there unless it without the three of you, the chemistry isn't there unless
it is the three of you doing the show.
And that's why I'm such a big fan of it.
So to fill in for Stu is such a great honor, but by no means am I at all interested in
any way, shape, or form of replacing Stu Stone because he is one third of a wonderful podcast.
And that guy needs a lot of credit for what he brings every week.
Brother, I think when I listen back to the episode, I think we took out some of the Stu
Stone funny and we filled it with like good insight and knowledge and facts regarding
Britpop.
So I feel like that's
the difference i think is that maybe we're not as funny and we'll be funny again i promise but
right now maybe less funny but a little more a little more knowledge but i you know but then
again with yacht rock stew kicked ass and took name so it depends on the subject and i'm just
a floater here pressing the buttons i think this is is like a classic David Lee Roth versus Sammy Hagar.
You know, both are great.
Both have a lot to offer.
Right.
I really like both.
You don't have to pick one.
You can enjoy them both.
I've got better hair than Stu, but I'm 20 years older.
That's what it is.
Yeah.
You do have great hair.
You guys also went to school together.
So you have an unfair advantage you've known each
other for 20 years you know again i i can't uh i can't let stew know enough how how what an honor
it is to be filling in for him and i'm not just blowing smoke wow yeah just the vps sales just to
let the vps sales know i'm the gary chiron Is it Cherone? Is that how you? Cherone.
That's me.
That's me.
Yeah, Borge saw me in a Gary Cherone.
I need to make a, I don't often have to do this,
but I got to correct something I said wrongly on the last episode that's really important.
So I have a little thing I wrote up here.
Okay.
So my apologies to Clint Malarchuk and his entire family because last week, well, this is a strange one. Okay. My apologies to Clint Malarchuk and his entire family because last week,
well, this is a strange one, okay?
So I think I piped in when we talked about Clint Malarchuk's injury
where he had the cut to the neck and he was bleeding out on the ice
and his life was saved.
Yeah, the jugular.
I mentioned that he had passed away because I remembered at that moment
in the podcast recording, I remembered he commits suicide, okay?
I actually remembered reading about his suicide.
And then somebody pointed out that Malarchuk is alive
and hopefully well at the age of 59 right now.
So I'm like, how did I make that mistake?
Like, I remember Clint Malarchuk sadly took his own life,
but here he is alive.
Like, what's going on?
Is this like a Berenstain Bears, Berenstain Bears thing?
What's happening here?
So I obviously did some digging.
And okay, what happened was Clint Malarchuk took a.22 caliber,
he put a.22 caliber bullet through his chin, his tongue, several teeth,
the roof of his mouth, and a nasal cavity.
And it was millimeters from his brain.
Sorry, this actually happened?
Yeah, this is in your mind.
No, this is what happened.
I'm sorry. This is a fact in the news. what happened was clint malarsha did put a bullet in
his head in an attempt to take his own life but miraculously survived and clint is with us today
and i'm hoping he got the help he needed and he's uh he's feeling much better now but so that's what
happened with the conflation there is
I must have read about the suicide attempt
and the bullet in the head
and thought he had died.
And he did not die.
So if you're wondering if Clint
Malarchuk's alive or dead, he is.
At this moment, he's alive.
Mike, when did that happen?
Was that shortly after you retired or something?
I don't think I've ever heard that.
It was several years ago i should
dig up the date but maybe somebody in the chat can can do that for me but so go ahead yeah you
know what mike i know how badly you must have felt when you first were informed that he's not
gone and he in fact is still alive right something similar happened to me working out here in vancouver at seafox um i had reported that
the drummer original drummer of doa um chuck biscuits i think either him or one of his brothers
who was also in doa is dead one of them's not and it was confusing and i mistakenly said on the radio
you know that he had just passed away. And of course he had family
in Vancouver and the program director was in within like five minutes saying, did you just say
such and such or so-and-so is dead? And I'm like, well, yeah, I saw it. It just came on Twitter or
whatever social media was, couldn't have been Twitter. Sorry, cam um and uh and i had to apologize and i felt horrible
absolutely horrible that that that that had happened and um it does happen uh it's a broadcast
mistake and uh you own it which you've just done mike and you've apologized for it and and hopefully
that's that's good for the family it was 2008 by the way, when Clint Malarchuk attempted to take his life. Oh, wow.
So this is like well after his playing career.
I thought maybe you were confusing him.
And I don't know why you would do this with Ray Emery.
No, no, no.
Which was another bizarre.
I mean, actually, it did pass away.
I found him floating in the Hamilton Harbor.
Oh, yeah.
He was the goalie, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, with Ottawa. Ottawa. Yes. I knew, yeah. He was the goalie, right? Yeah, with Ottawa.
Ottawa, yes.
I knew that that had happened.
Razor, they called him.
I didn't hear the circumstances, and maybe this isn't for this show.
I mean, we could sit here all day, but then we're going to get...
Yeah, this is...
We have to turn the...
We have to make a steep
swing left here, because
this is our lovey-dovey
Valentine's Day episode.
Wait, wait, wait.
Could I ask the brother
just one more DOA question?
Yeah, of course.
Have you ever,
or are you friendly with Joey Shithead?
I've met Joe.
I've met Joe.
Yeah, rightly so.
He is a legend out here
and he's a legend in the,
when you talk about 80s punk rock,
you're going to talk about Joey Shithead for sure.
Joey is a politician out here as well.
And I know, Cam, you're probably going in this direction
about the documentary that's coming out about his life.
Yeah.
No, honestly, I didn't know there was a documentary.
I mean, I certainly felt. There is. Just so just so i mean it's just larger than life personality but he is and in music something
better change is the name of the documentary their car uh what do you what do you call it
they're trying to raise funds for it right now crowd crowd crowd crowdsourcing crowdfunding
and i'm happy to say that i put some money into that as well because I'm a big fan of DOA and Joey as well.
He's a super guy.
He's definitely a guy that would be wonderful
on Toronto Mike one day, that's for sure.
Oh, I'd be honoured.
He just got the Order of Canada or something.
What did he get?
He's getting the Order of Canada.
I think that was Art Bergman.
Oh, sorry, that is Art Bergman.
You're right.
Another legend for sure. You're right. But another light. You're right.
I confused my own.
One Vancouver punk after another.
Right.
Lieve Fumka is on the Zoom.
And Lieve.
And your cat.
And your cat.
Say hi, Lieve.
And then please, I have a question for you.
And it's kind of a tough one.
I'm putting you on the spot here.
But are you in love?
Yes, I am.
With whom? With Luna. My cat. are you in are you in love yes i am with whom uh with luna luna your cat okay i'll let one know he
misses out there but you're in love okay and i ask that now uh again brother bill and cam gordon
are you guys in love yeah it's the cat making an appearance cocky Lunas because I've been thinking about this episode and I'm about
to play a message
from our very own Stu Stone which might explain
why I'm going to bring up this topic
here but I was thinking so I'm in love
and I was thinking about all those
people
all the FOTMs to be honest
but this is at this time
like it's Valentine's Day.
That's why we're doing the love songs.
But we're in a pandemic
and we've been stuck in this damn thing
for a while now.
And it's our first Valentine's Day of the pandemic.
And I would think being single
during the pandemic would be very difficult
because you can't just go to meet people
the way you would in a non-pandemic situation.
So I just think today,
Valentine's Day is probably, especially this year during the pandemic, it's probably like a tough day
for the single FOTMs amongst us. If I may, I was single for a long time,
on and off my whole life. And you know what, to me anyway anyway this is just speaking for myself valentine's day sort of it's
it's i hate to to use it word of this you're being robbed by the way um miss fam because
there's someone behind you um maybe that's the first is that the person you really love
yeah that's one that's all right handler cat is second or first he's's second. I get it. No.
So Valentine's day to me is a little bit of a forced holiday.
Like a lot of them are, and, you know, going out and spending, you know,
eight, nine bucks on a card and $30 on $15 flowers. Is it worth it? I think there's better ways to show your love to someone else than just doing
that. You know, I don't know. that's just sort of my take on it i was
gonna say on the most recent uh dana levinson podcast had some techniques that maybe you could
oh yes that's what uh i listened to a few minutes of that a few minutes hey did you
use any of those tips because that was the sex with yeah sex with dr Jess, who we connected with her. She was in Jamaica, by the way.
Oh.
Yeah, I know.
That's why she looks so happy.
But yeah, that's the new episode of On the DL.
By the way, a future guest of On the DL is our very own Stu Stone.
There you go.
We're just waiting for him to get back to Canada when he gets on his good microphone,
which will be in March or something.
So out here in British Columbia, we're told no essential travel what the
hell are you guys doing out there just i'm in jamaica stew's on an american tour right now
playing like the various coffee houses or something i don't know yeah don't get me involved
in that one i don't go any if it's not on my bicycle going all the way maybe to mississauga
uh i never leave my neighborhood so so I'm not going anywhere.
I don't know about you, Cam, but I haven't gone anywhere.
Yeah, no, I'm staying put for sure.
Last week, Mike, I admitted that I had a tough time picking the four songs for the subject.
And once again, you start going down the rabbit hole hole and I was getting completely, do I do this?
Do I do? I mean, I had a really tough time again this week, picking four songs because I, I, I
didn't know if we wanted to go sort of the schmaltzy kind of like cam. I think I saw a tweet
from you mentioning mush, uh, mush music. I think it was called right. And I was thinking, is that
where we want to go with this? Or do we want to kind of get personal?
So I just, you know, I just ended up myself.
Anyway, I just ended up picking four songs that I have stories as to why I picked them
for the subject of love.
But yeah, but I wasn't, I have no idea if I'm even close to picking the songs or similar
styles of songs that Cam and Mike, you've done.
So I guess we'll find out soon enough.
So yeah, we're going to, I think like last week, although last week I started with Stu,
but he actually worded his message as if it was coming last.
But this week, I think it's better to go first with Stu Stone.
So Stu will lead us off, but I'm going to crack open a cold Great Lakes beer because their birthday is
tomorrow.
So happy birthday,
Great Lakes Brewery.
Here I go.
No tragically hip beers,
please.
Yeah.
This is my new great.
I'm going to drink a beer.
Great Lakes,
a head by a century lager.
Hundreds of Meridian wheat ale.
And by the way, Mike, as you sip that down,
congratulations on GLB re-upping their relationship with you.
I mentioned this to Mike.
I ordered a couple of, they weren't even six packs.
There were eight packs of the Hayes Mama
and the Octopus Wants to Fight.
So I'm going to enjoy those.
Oh, good for you.
Can you not, because I don't know what the lockdown situation is for you in Ontario,
can you not go to the brewery and pick up beer?
Yeah, you can.
You can?
Yeah, you can go to that.
Camp just doesn't leave the house?
Well, it's the other part of the city.
Oh, it is.
Yeah, it's south of Tobacco.
So Mike, can you go there
because i remember early in the pandemic that when they had closed it because they were putting all
their resources strictly to deliver you couldn't even go into the retail stores the retail store
yeah they opened it now so i think they have they allow three people in at a time or something you
got to mask up as of course and then wow yeah uh, yeah, they got a process there, but you can go there now. Uh, yeah.
So they did re-up with Toronto Mike. So thank you. Great lakes.
And all the FOTMs who live in Ontario anyways should support great lakes
brewery. So that puts brother bill off the hook. Uh,
and you mentioned re-upping a Ridley funeral home. I, I didn't even expect this,
but they, they wanted to sign up for the entire calendar year of 2021.
Wow, that's great.
It is great because, you know,
we're fiercely independent here,
much like Great Lakes.
And Ridley Funeral Home
have been fantastic partners.
So shout out and much love
to the pillars of the community,
Ridley Funeral Home.
And Palma Pasta too.
I had a great chat the other day
with Anthony from Palma Pasta.
And tough times for
everybody, but they're going to make it and then we're all
just like, we're all gung-ho for
this post-pandemic. We're
going to go fucking nuts.
Do you ever think, what do you do when you find
out it's safe to go do whatever?
You're just going to strip down, run
down Yonge Street. What are you going to do, Cam?
Are you going to go crazy?
I do that anyway, pandemic
or otherwise.
That's called Saturdays in Cam's world.
I don't know. It's
kind of sad and I feel like Andre
Picard wrote an article about this where
our path out
of this pandemic is just going to be this
slow trudge. It's not like it's
going to be over tomorrow.
It's not like a war. The war is over. You have a big parade. like it's going to be over tomorrow it's not like a war like when you the
war is over you have a big parade right like you're not going to get that moment it's going
to be a trickle yeah i i think the moment is actually be drawn out it's going to be you know
the first holidays where you can you know congregate with your family again your first
you know whatever like the first the first concert's gonna be like epic like it better be yeah yeah i was thinking that too we think about like the sars concert of
you know 2002 or whatever it was with three okay with the stones and uh acdc and etc etc rush
tea party blah blah blah you know you think i wish you on the bill too yeah oh yeah oh okay well
then it just took it to the next level uh star power but you've got to think this worldwide
you know epidemic we're going through pandemic we're going through there's just going to be a
worldwide concert with everybody i mean it's just going to be like every band that's ever existed
and probably bands
that, you know, I've been gone for a long time. They'll just bring back the holograms of people
and it'll just be insanity. And it's finally reunited. Here's what, here's what I could be.
You never know. Uh, the, here's what I predict. I predict a worldwide shutdown for a day
to celebrate the end of the pandemic, if that makes sense. I think
that's what's going to happen. And it's going to be probably the biggest hug fest the world has
ever seen. I'm still, I'm going to say no to the hugs. Okay. I'm just warning everybody. I'm going
to have a little hug free policy there. I'm not just, just in case, just in case. It'll be like
hands across America, except no one will be holding hands. That's right.
It's like fist bumps across America.
Six feet in distance, too.
It would actually be funny if they did that.
Do you think that people will continue to wear masks
after this is all done?
I think so.
I think so long as the health experts recommend it,
I think that we'll be wearing masks.
I'm pretty sure we'll just listen to the health experts,
and if they say you should wear it, you're right.
Yeah, I've sort of thought, you know,
you leave the house, you get your wallet,
you get your keys, you get your mask.
That's just going to be part of the fabric
of reality going forward.
Whether you're wearing it or not,
but I think it's always going to be on your person.
Totally, I completely agree.
We're going to get to Stu Stone's first love song.
I just want to give love to Beck who actually,
so everybody seems to have collected at live.torontomic.com,
but Beck is all alone in the Facebook,
on the Facebook page commenting away.
And she's,
she said it is tough to be single on Valentine's day during a pandemic.
So I'm sensitive to that.
So I hope this like trigger warning,
you're going to hear from a bunch of guys who are currently
in love here but we're glad beck is spending some time with us too and hopefully right yeah
beck we love all the fltms he's not a loser baby so why don't you kill me right mike majeski is in
the know he's not a loser either he's in mimico and you can visit realestatelove.ca to contact. I'm calling him Mimico Mike.
So not to be confused with myself.
Mimico Mike, contact him and tell him Toronto Mike sent you.
He's with Remax and he jumped on board as a brand new sponsor this month.
So shout out to Mimico Mike.
And of course, Barb Paluskiewicz, who I talked to earlier today at CDN Technologies.
They have this great new service where they can basically let you know your vulnerabilities
and your network before the bad guys discover it.
So you can fix it before trouble.
So contact Barb at CDNTechnologies.com.
And last but not least, before I press play on Stu Stone's first jam,
StickerU.
StickerU.com.
Get your stickers, your decals, your badges, your temporary tattoos.
They're great people, and we appreciate the support.
They're helping to fuel the real talk.
Are you guys ready for the first Stu Stone jam?
Ready.
Absolutely.
Let's do it.
Let's do it. There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me
Love remains a drug that's the higher, not the pill
But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large and
The light that you shine can't be seen
Baby, I'd like to bring you to a kiss from a rose on the tree
Ooh, the more I get, I feel so strange
Mike, Cam, brother, it's Stu Stone with my entry for this week.
And I understand we are celebrating Love Song.
We are celebrating Valentine's Day.
Well, you guys might be.
I actually have a confession to make.
I've never actually celebrated Valentine's Day with a significant other, sadly, in my entire life.
I've never had a girlfriend on Valentine's Day. Either any girlfriend that I have had, we were broken up before Valentine's Day, or we got together at a different time when it wasn't February.
when it wasn't February.
So I've never actually participated other than, you know,
as a youngster in grade school,
you know, sending valentines,
you know, obligatory valentines
to everybody in the class.
So I think I got valentines then,
but only because you had to,
you know, otherwise, I don't know.
Maybe my inbox wouldn't have been,
you know, filled with Ninja Turtles,
valentines or whatever
people were sending out at the time
Anyway, to make a long story short
It's tough for me to pick a love song
Because, you know, you kind of need to be in love
To really know what a great love song is
And I got to do a lot of thinking on that
And we don't have that kind of time here
It's a short show
So I've decided I have a guy here that i've met that uh he himself
has been in love before so i was wondering maybe i could just you know by proxy have him tell me
what his love song would be and then maybe i'll just commandeer that love song and claim it as
my own uh sir do you mind uh answering a question here oh yeah yeah sure sure
uh you have a mask i can put one on for you that would be really that would be a good first step
uh just safety first here at the uh pandemic friday show it is pandemic friday there's the mask
uh wow okay uh so uh have you ever been in? I have. And you obviously, you listened to music maybe while you were in love?
Yes, that does happen.
You know, maybe when you're like rolling around in the sheets, there's some music playing.
I'm looking for a love song, like the one that means the most or that is so important to you, sir.
Well, I'd say, you know, the song i was listening to my first time i could i could give
you that song sure uh it's um kissed by a rose by uh seal kiss kiss by a rose is it kiss from a rose
or kiss by a rose uh kiss kiss by a rose yeah it's kiss by a rose. Yeah, it's kissed by a rose. You're saying that you listened to that during your first sexual encounter?
Yeah, yeah.
It's a great song, though.
I guess so.
I'll take it.
Kiss from a rose.
Seal.
Did you guys happen to be, maybe, did you play the song intentionally?
Or did you happen to be watching Batman Forever and things got out of hand?
And, you know, maybe you were MLing when that song just happened to be playing during the movie?
I wish I wish that we were like you know in the back of a movie theater during
that movie but no I just inspired by the the love scene in that movie and
and played it you know it was like a planned like I was like I hit the hit play and I like started my move you know. It was like a planned, like I was like,
I hit play
and I like started
my move, you know.
That's interesting.
So you like went
Bruce Wayne with it?
Yeah.
Was that Val Kilmer,
Bruce Wayne?
Oh, of course.
Yeah, that's Bruce Wayne
there is.
Oh my goodness,
what a controversial opinion.
All right, well there you go.
Kiss from a rose
by Seal.
Kiss by a rose.
Kiss by a rose
by Seal. From? The artist, not the animal. Kiss from a rose by Seal. Kiss by a rose. Kiss by a rose by Seal.
From.
The artist, not the animal.
And I would like to wish all of you guys a happy Valentine's Day.
Lots of love to all the friends of Stu Stone that are listening.
And I will speak to you guys soon.
Thank you.
So, guys, I got that earlier today and loaded it up.
And I have to be very, very honest as always,
but I was sad for Stu.
Like when I was listening to Stu at the beginning,
how he had never had a Valentine's Day with a partner,
with a lover, if you will.
And I felt sad for Stu.
What's your reaction to the Stu Stone jam kicking here?
Who wants to go first?
Cam, you've known him the longest.
I only just met him, but you've known him 20 years.
I mean, the song aside, I think the song choice is a bit weak.
But it sounds like, again, this was done by Proxy.
I'm curious who that gentleman he was.
Quote, end quote.
Yeah, who gave that.
Who made love to seals kissed by rose
from what i was gonna say yeah from it's kissed from a rose right from by tomato
kissed by tomato whatever stew pointed that out who leave a fun fact is of course seal was on the
masked singer uh so i'm only only uh leave is watching that show
so yeah but by the way the an aside did you ever go to your french teacher like hey how do you say
seal in french do you remember this old it's a swear word right what is it it's like and fuck
yeah oh i think my six-year-old cute yeah my six-year-old uh let me know about that uh recently because he just that went through
his grade one class yeah it's it's a what the seal you could say what the seal exactly or seal off
yeah i don't know if i have any rebuttals to stew's point i mean stew's awesome and yeah i mean
this is like loves life and stew's had like an incredible, but, but Cam, I know, I don't know.
Like,
what do you want me to say on the new year's Eve special?
I took a mental note when he,
he shared the fact that,
uh,
he had never had the stroke of midnight,
uh,
of new year's Eve with,
you know,
we never got to share a kiss at that moment.
Cause I think you were talking about you and MF and I was talking about
Monica and I felt that moment.
I,
I felt this tinge of sadness.
And now that he's brought it up again,
I think, Stu,
I think we need to do something
when this pandemic ends.
Just like maybe some kind of a date.
Like who wants to go on a date with Stu
and then maybe do some matchmaking or something?
These always go very well
for people like the subject.
Let me tell you.
Yes, this has happened to me a few times.
This goes very very
well ends ends brilliantly usually the police are involved i was gonna say maybe dana levinson
has some friends maybe when he's on her oh i see what you say okay so i do want to shout out some
people go ahead wait a minute before you go there mike may i just give you my quick perspective? I, again, very, very thankful that Stu has let me sit in the chair for him this week
again.
I can tell you that when I first heard the song he had picked and then he told that story,
I thought, well, maybe Neil Diamond, Sweet Caroline would have been better given, you know, hands reaching out,
touching me, touching you. But then he kept going and you mentioned, he mentioned the proxy
and whoever that was, I'm presuming maybe a cab driver taking him to the bad part of town for
reasons unknown. But here he is living his life.
And that's the kind of giving human being Stu seems to be,
living his life through somebody else,
giving someone else the opportunity to fill a void that he was asked to fill.
So I think that was really honorable of Stu to do that.
But I would have thought Neil Diamond had said that said that and um and good on him he's a fine
Canadian but I will say this last week I said who's a fine Canadian Stewart okay I thought
you were saying Neil Diamond oh you all are no Neil's from New York so we can't I mean his last
time I checked New York was part of the U.S. still anyway it's been a while but uh what I was
going to say is that uh is that uh uh you know I can't remember what I was
going to say so let's just edit that part out don't worry I'll fix it in post I'll just think
I'm going to thank some people on the the live feed here live.torontomic.com just want to thank
Cambrio is here and Quebec Irish boy is here of course we've already said hi to leave a Femke VP of sales,
of course is here.
Uh,
Ian service of course is here.
Why,
why is that Gord?
We said hi to him earlier.
Uh,
this too shall pass is great.
It says great to be back on with this great real talk.
And,
uh,
everyone Langer,
of course is still in the house here.
So let's kick out Brother Bill's
first love jam
This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
A simple prop To occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love
All right.
Talk to us, Brother Bill.
Well, I thought I'd start at the shallow end of the wading pool, if you will,
with REM and the fairly obvious, the one I love. I kind of
picked that because I remember, Cam, you mentioning on a few episodes ago, you were talking about REM
and I think you were mentioning how you kind of found it surprising that they've just kind of
disappeared and no one really talks about them anymore. Do you recall those comments?
Yeah. I don't know if I imagine this or if it's not true. I've tried to corroborate disappeared and no one really talks about them anymore do you recall those yeah yeah this i i
don't know if i imagine this or if it's not true i've tried to corroborate this thought by looking
at like spotify play accounts and youtube and certainly like losing my religion and everyone
everybody hurts everyone hurts that's sort of like kiss with a rose kiss by a rose. Kissed by a rose. That too.
Yeah, but I, yeah, just knowing how massive they were,
I just, anecdotally, I feel like we don't hear about R.E.M.
to the level that we hear about Nirvana or... Or U2.
Tupac or, yeah, or U2 or even like somebody like Pearl Jam
or even like a band like Weezer.
Like I just, you know, I feel like there's a lot more,
well, Weezer's a bad example because they're still around.
You know, agreed.
And that's why I sort of picked that song.
I mean, it's obvious, the one I love, There You Go.
I was pretty simple that way.
But yeah, I agree with everything you're saying.
And the reason why I picked that song too
is I wanted to do a little bit of research.
You know, REM sold 90 million records worldwide.
They released 15 studio albums and sold 90 million records.
This is not Weezer numbers.
Weezer are probably 40.
They've doubled and then somewhat Weezer have sold.
I mean, they're not, you know, U2 numbers either.
But it's pretty impressive to sell 90 million records
and yet, as you mentioned,
sort of be almost cast aside
for whatever else is the big thing.
But just for those who don't know,
REM are from Athens, Georgia.
They formed in 1980.
All of the guys went to the University of Georgia,
which of course is the Georgia Bulldogs.
Very famous running back
for the Dallas Cowboys. Also
went to that school. Gentlemen,
any idea? Emmitt Smith.
No.
I was hoping you'd tell me because
I can't remember his name.
It's not Emmitt Smith though.
The other guy. It'll come to me.
Is he older or younger than Emmitt Smith? He's younger than Emmitt Smith. Georgia Bulldogs other guy. It'll come to me. Is it older or younger than Emmitt Smith?
He's younger than Emmitt Smith.
Georgia Bulldog.
Anyway, I'll try to remember.
Someone in the chat room will know this.
Someone in the chat room who they happen to know.
Tom Brady.
Did you see how hammered he was after that boat thing?
Did you see the footage?
He did.
Holy smokes.
Who isn't that hammered after a boat ride?
That's all I want to say.
Yeah, but it's his seventh.
He was hammered.
Lang? He was.
Who's Lang? No, it's...
Lang, that's a joke about Jim Lang
and Greg Brady hosting the
Fan 590 Morning Show. Okay.
Gotcha. Is that what's happening?
No, that did happen, and then
it unhappened. I like
Jimmy Lang. He's a buddy of mine that's why
i was wondering i'm going oh he's in uh he's in markham still but uh hey that's a quick question
before we move on to love songs is uh what's the reaction in bc to the uh tsn radio disappearing
there i guess it's turning into a funny station have you heard i took notes for this rem song uh
no um i ought to we're sidetracking here all right go back to rem okay no no that's fine that's
fine um we can go back to it um no i uh look at that we offended you know badly she left do you
know we're all about tangents on this show brother bill like that's the lifeblood of this program
it's just it's yeah i i know what the tangents. We're on one of them right now. I'll go along.
So anyway, on a serious note, yeah, it was a big deal.
Team, I'm sorry, TSN was the big sports station here.
Now, when I say they were the big sports station here,
I mean, the numbers don't lie. And the numbers for sports radio across this country are not good.
But that doesn't justify taking $123 million of the government's money
and using it to pay off your employees and their severance
and doing it at the end of Bell Talks, their campaign,
which doesn't look good.
It doesn't look good.
It didn't look good.
They're taking a
roasting obviously right now. And I feel for many, many people or each and every person who got let
go. But you have to understand guys that in the business of radio, this has been going on forever.
The first time I witnessed it was when I worked at CFNY in Brampton, and 22 people were let go in one day. And, you know, I survived it due to, uh,
probably the fact that I wasn't making a lot of money and actually was promoted because of it.
Um, well, you know, to let people go the way we heard they were let go in any market. Cause I
know it affected Hamilton, Winnipeg and Vancouver to let people go in that way. I don't think it was very professional.
I think that I don't know if you guys heard, but out here after they announced that everybody
was let go, the first song they played was Good Riddance by Green Day.
Yeah, I heard the clip.
I have something to say about that, which is that 99% the uh great unwashed the common people as pulp would say
think that song is called the time of your life yes and i assume that the the the intern that
programmed that song also thought that because anyone with any sort of broadcasting experience
would have known that it's called good riddance. And that was just a, like a kick in the gut to these people. And, you know, uh, it it's, it's been this way in the radio business for, for many
years. Um, this one was particularly nasty given how quickly it happened and how many people were
affected. And all you can hope is that, uh, that, uh, that it all works out for everybody involved
and, and that they, they survive and move on to something
that they feel as passionate about,
whether it be radio or not.
Well said.
And I know you want to get back to REM,
but I will read this comment from Dan Jay,
who says, congrats to FOTM Mike Wilner,
because Mike Wilner landed on his feet.
Sportsnet dumped him,
and he's now a Blue Jays columnist for the Toronto Star.
And that's not easy.
That's huge.
That's not easy to do, to be able to, there's the word, 2020, pivot,
and land on your feet like Mike did.
And I know that Mike's a friend of yours.
Mike, not only at FOTM, but he's a friend of yours.
I don't know him personally.
I know what he did.
Um, and good for him for being able to pivot to another job that quickly, because let me
tell you, I'm somebody who's been, I was let go by Seafox in 2014 and it's 2021.
And I worked briefly at another radio station, which was horrendous, but I don't want to get into that right now. But I don't work there anymore. And I've been it's been a it's been a tough adjustment for me to to get back in this industry. And I'm not there yet. So, you know, for a lot of these people that were let go, the reality is they may never work in radio again.
They have to realize that.
And my advice to them is don't wait to make your next move.
If you're going to do a podcast, contact Toronto Mic Digital Services, get it going, or somebody, or start something, and don't wait.
Because if you think, well, I'm going to wait until my severance runs out
and then I'll try and do something, it's going to be too late.
So I hope that maybe one person's listening to me
that's been affected by these cuts and will take my advice.
And I hope it works out for each and every one of them.
I really do.
I don't know what it is.
It seems like amongst all the media, when stuff, when there's, when stuff like this happens,
it seems like it's always right.
Like radio is the most like jarring.
Like it's,
you know,
it's overnight format changes.
And it's all of a sudden,
like with this one,
we,
we noticed right away that,
you know,
the,
the,
all the Twitter accounts for these stations were just gone right away.
Like at,
at the stroke,
they made this announcement when,
uh,
I forget.
Yeah.
Like it just, it's all in one motion.
It's very cutting.
I know, jarring, cutting.
Yeah.
You're right.
And you're right.
He says, I remember when Jason Barr got it from 102.1,
literally because I broke that story because they took his bio off the website.
Like that's like your first tell.
Okay, this guy, they just rip it off the website.
Like he never existed.
Well, that's what
they do yeah that's what they do and it is jarring of course i mean try being the person on the other
end of the i mean i i heard that and i can't substantiate these rumors or or not can't say
they're true or not true but i mean i'm hearing stories about them finding out through twitter
from other people saying hey really sorry to hear what happened
and from like robo calls saying congratulations you no longer work for bell media um i hope that's
not true because that's that's low yeah or shall i say lower but that's a pen maybe that's a pandemic
thing like what do you do throw them all in a zoom room and go oh thanks for coming on the zoom call
uh you're all sadly no longer with the company.
We're emailing you a package for you to sign or whatever.
Like it is, the pandemic has made that tricky for sure.
Not that I ever want to side with the HR reps
because they're all evil, but REM.
So the best way to get us back to REM.
Great band.
Oh, okay.
We're back there again.
You mentioned the University of Georgia.
A couple of people in the chat have come up with guesses.
I know the name.
Okay, so first of all, the name I know is wrong,
but I just want to acknowledge that she did a good attempt at it
because we know this is a more recent person than Emmett Smith,
and this guess of Herschel Walker, that's going in the wrong direction.
But good try.
That was a big Trump supporter, I believe.
Right, yes, he was.
Herschel Walker was the right answer, I think.
Okay, well then you misled us, Brother Bill. So thank
you, Moose Grumpy, for getting it correct. But you misled
us by saying it was somebody younger
than Emmett Smith. Is Herschel Walker
older than Emmett Smith?
Oh, I'm sorry. I think previous gender.
Was it Herschel Walker was the big, like the
massive... Yeah, he never lifted weights.
Remember? That was his big thing. Like he was
like cut, but he never lifted
weights. Right. I apologize guys, though. Now you know why I never worked for TSN. Right. remember that was his big thing like he was like cut but he never lifted weights because i apologize
guys though now you know why i never worked for tsn right and 40 here in vancouver because my
sports knowledge is minimal to say the least but uh anyway yes he is the guy that went to the
university of georgia as well um any idea i I mentioned they've had 15 studio albums.
The top two
selling albums for REM.
Monster.
Take a shot of that? Monster.
Monster is not on the list.
Not on the top two. I'll say
Out of Time.
Number one.
Number one, Losing My Religion, the big
song from that one.
And then number two is the next album, which was 1992's Automatic for the People.
Of course.
That was a dark one.
It was.
It gave us drive.
Everybody Hurts, which could have been played today.
We played it during the Sad Songs episode.
Oh, there you go.
Okay.
All right.
So that was the second top song.
Did you say that could be played today?
That's not a love song.
That's a sad song.
Well, I got a couple of songs that are on the border,
the borderline that today of sad or love.
I don't know.
I guess you guys can let me know.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
And that song I played you, by the way,
the one I love is from 1987 the document
album which was their fifth album
well done brother Bill this is why
I love that song great great
great great jam great band
and one
more fun fact sorry guys quickly before we move
here one more fun fact is REM
in 1996
signed a record deal with
Warner Brothers Records which was the highest amount of money for a band for a record deal ever at the time.
$80 million US.
Crazy, right?
When you think about it, that's wild.
Unbelievable.
Old college rock band.
And here they are, big time.
Okay, here's Cam Gordon's first jam.
Oh, wait, wait, wait.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Okay, I'll bring it down.
Well, I know what it is now.
I'm sorry.
Okay.
This is like, name that tune.
I'll just say that there's some breaking news
before we get into this.
I hope everyone's sitting down in the chat room.
Okay.
FOTM Eric Alper,
as of timestamp 6 p.m. Eastern today,
has tweeted,
what's a cover song that's better than the original version?
Last time he tweeted this out was December.
And yeah, it's a great question.
You know, this has been a topic of...
That's a whole Pandemic Friday episode.
Yeah, a lot of chat about Eric Alper on Twitter.
Should we get Eric Alper on a Pandemic Friday?
Is it because they think that he's recirculating his tweets?
Well, he definitely is.
Yeah.
Well, this one was sent by Hootsuite.
Shout out to Vancouver's own Ryan Holmes, who founded Hootsuite.
But I'm just pokey about Eric.
Eric is awesome.
And this is like this.
I love that question, too.
I actually had a chat with Eric this week about sea shanties,
because I was looking for a good sea shanty expert who was willing to sing a
sea shanty for another show I produce.
And I was talking to Eric about who he suggested.
Did he have anyone in mind?
Oh yeah.
Uh,
Eric Rankin.
Uh,
I don't remember Jim Rankin.
Yeah.
One of the Rankins.
There's so many of them was willing to talk sea shanties,
but didn't want to sing. And Eric himself was willing to talk sea shanties, but didn't want to sing.
And Eric himself was willing to talk sea shanties, but wasn't going to sing.
So I'm still looking if you know anybody.
Okay.
Okay.
So let's hear a little bit.
I'm on the wrong coast for that kind of stuff.
Because, brother, I don't know if you follow this on the TikTok,
but sea shanties are so hot right now.
They're having a moment.
I am not 14
so i do not follow the tick or the talk
all right cam we're ready to hear about the Cure's love song. Yeah, and I apologize for talking.
No, it was okay.
Yeah, much like The Brother, this is a very literal love song for the first choice.
It's literally just called Love Song, although all one word, which I'm never really sure why that is.
You know, those gothic guys are such hitters.
Huge hit for The Cure.
This song, I didn't realize what a massive hit this was in the US.
I knew it was a big deal, but this actually went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
So huge jam.
Went to number 10 in Canada.
Number one in Poland.
Poland.
The Poles.
Love a little Cure.
Cure's one of those bands not quite to the level of
a Bush or even a
Catherine Wheel, but I feel like
they were almost never as popular in the UK
as they were elsewhere.
That was certainly the case with this song. This only went to number
18 in the UK.
Surprising to me. I was going to say
probably the Cure were bigger everywhere else
before the uk but not that they couldn't play arenas in the uk too eventually they did
but you look at the the rise to fame of robert smith and company it started fast and furious
in north america i saw them at kingswood music Theatre in 1983 so that's early days
big stage up there for sure
I feel like they were
I think they still are really big in South America
too with also like
Morrissey and the Smiths have always been huge
and
well you can understand
when you look at the South American
sort of the colour of their skin
and the tan lines and such just to to, to be able to have that,
like I've been dead for three weeks, look that Robert Smith always had.
They must be envious.
Yeah. Yeah. Robert Smith has my complexion. So I appreciate that.
Absolutely. And anyway, that's the song that kept this song,
love song off the top of the charts.
This is actually too bad because this is, I don't this is a great song uh miss you much by janet jackson you remember
that of course yeah it's like whatever better song fine yeah that one for better songs um yeah
their biggest hit ever in the u.s uh surprisingly friday i'm in love only went to number 18 in the
u.s i would have thought that might have been a number one hit.
Yeah, for sure.
Yeah, and interestingly, their biggest ever hit in the UK
was the same album as Love Song,
which is, of course, the Disintegration album.
Oh, yeah.
A different track, though.
Fascination Street?
No, Lullaby.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, which was a number five hit in the UK.
So all over the place, all mixed up,
which I think was also their remix album. Can I i can i tell you a quick robert smith story yeah please like
that's why you're here brother nothing major just probably one of my favorite interviews i ever did
was robert smith at uh the molson amphitheater the cure were playing there i can't remember with
who it might have been i don't't know. I can't remember.
Is this like Blood Flowers era?
Yeah. It would have been that era, I suppose.
I was there. I was there.
He was such a nice fella. I guess that's the best way to describe him.
He's very nervous.
He's got like,
he's always moving his hands and he's chewing his nails.
And I remember we got into have a conversation
about his favorite movie, which would probably you'd never think would be Robert Smith's favorite
movie cam, Mike. And that is his favorite movie is the big Lebowski. Wow. So at the very end of
the interview, I said, can I call you dude? And he said, I don't think I'm worthy. And that was
the end of the interview but he was just i
just remember him being a very very kind man wearing white makeup lipstick all over his face
and having his nails it's very interesting interview just looking at his character and and
how he portrays himself with that wiry hair right you know i feel like he's a big soccer or football
guy too like always has to i don't know which team he supports but i remember reading like cure
tour stories where you had to sort of build that in it's like i thought you were like
you know gothic guy but of course the cure i think famously especially robert smith
never self-identified as gothic and never really wanted to be stigmatized that way
and did you see the the footage of the cure at the rock and roll hall of fame induction when they
came off the stage and there was this young I guess she was the one who did the interviews with
them as it came off the stage and she was very over enthusiastic and Robert Smith was just
terrified it was pretty funny to watch it's on youtube if
you ever want to see it yeah they're uh they're a unique band and still going strong i mean it's
interesting because you hear a lot of the stories of just all the turmoil in that band too and
certainly had a lot of members and uh i think it was like loyal tolhurst who was what the keyboardist
or original founding member with robert smith yeah and i feel like there was some
acrimony when when he left the band and just i don't know like a lot of a lot of folks have
come and gone in the cure obviously robert smith is the constant um but yeah i mean i don't think
they probably ever had a album bigger than this one disintegration and a lot of singles on this
this album uh too i have to admit that i'm glad you chose The Cure, Cam,
because I thought you would, and that's why I didn't,
because honestly, not that anybody cares,
but The Cure are one of my favorite bands of all time.
There you go.
Yeah, for sure.
Cam, do you still get the albums and still into the new stuff
that they put out?
I'm just curious.
No, I was sort of, you know, from the beginning,
Boys Don't Cry up until my favorite albums,
Head on the Door from 1985.
I was probably really, really into The Cure
until maybe, what was the album after this one?
I can't remember what it was called.
I think it was called Wish.
It might've been Wish.
And then I kind of, yeah, I was kind of done with them.
But good 20-year run with Robert Smith and The Cure.
I think that's okay.
But they have like a shitload of albums in the 80s.
Like they probably put out like seven or eight albums.
Every year it seemed like they, and one was a double album.
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me was a double album.
Cam, do you want a taste of your mind blow?
Yeah, I'll just say, I'll just set it up here.
This song has famously
been covered
or maybe not even
that famously
because I didn't know
there were so many covers
of this song
from everyone
from Tori Amos
to Good Charlotte
to A Perfect Circle
to Adele
to Death Cab for Cuties.
Adele had a big hit
with them.
With the artist
as well as this band
and I've never heard
this song.
This was actually
a number one Billboard alternative hit. 2004 And I've never heard this song. This was actually a number one Billboard alternative hit.
2004.
I've never heard this band.
It got a lot of airplay on CFNY.
Like a lot.
Because definitely remember it.
Where were you, Cam?
Were you in your LA years?
I don't know.
I went.
Clearly he wasn't there.
Brother Bill was there.
But 3.11 was a point of... I don't remember this either. Let it go. 3.11 he wasn't there. Brother Bill was there, but, you know, 311 was a point of...
I don't remember this either.
Let it go.
Yeah, 311.
311.
Oh.
Yeah.
Overrated 311.
So, Mike, you've heard this before?
Yeah, big time, yeah.
Wow.
I was there.
Yeah, apparently from the soundtrack of the movie 50 First Dates.
By the way, that's my first I was there.
I just want to point out it took a long time before I did my first one.
Well done, though.
Dumb question.
What's QPR?
Does anyone know what that is?
Queen's Park Rangers.
Langer says that Robert Smith supports QPR. Oh, that is it. So that is Queen's Park Rangers. Okayanger says that Robert Smith supports
QPR. So that is Queen Spark Rangers.
Okay, okay. See, I didn't know what QPR
meant. Rod Stewart's team, too, or
he owned them or something at one time.
They're in London, based in London. This community
comes in handy.
Really good stuff here. Okay.
I was just going to say one final comment about
sort of the... Robert
Smith, you look at him and like, oh, gothic guy.
But then he's just kind of like a nice sort of quiet guy as well.
Like famously, because you've seen photos of this pop up every once in a while on Twitter and elsewhere, how he's worn the Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, I think a few times.
a few times right and there's a reason for that cam because what i heard was whenever he would play somewhere in the rider he would always ask for a shirt of the local sports team so whether
he was playing in toronto or detroit or chicago he would always get a shirt from one of the local
sports teams and occasionally he would wear them on stage. And that's why you've seen him with a leaf.
That's smart.
When I'm a rock star, I'm going to do the same thing.
That's smart.
I think that's a great idea.
That's a fun fact.
Anyway, this example, nobody tweet that at Eric Alper.
311's version, not better than 311.
I do remember 311's version.
And I do remember Adele's version.
So those are the two I definitely remember.
I remember the Adele.
Actually, the Adele I didn't care for either, I feel like it was like a
sort of a jazzy
You know, if I ever do get called
back in the future to do another
one of these, can we do overrated
American alt rock bands? Yeah
Because I'll take 311 for
500 Alex. Okay, well hold on to that
we might need you next week for that one but I'm going to
kick out my first jam.
Come with me
My love
To the sea, the sea of love.
I won't ever tell you how much I love you.
I love you Okay, gents, this is a cover, of course,
but the history of the song,
and then I'll explain why this version is the one I go to,
but this is Sea of Love.
Many covers of the song, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, the original,
a guy named Phil Phillips back in 1959,
and it was his only top 40 hit.
I think it peaked at number two.
Let me just bring it down a little more here.
And of course, the version I remember growing up
is not Phil Phillips.
Same as mine.
I remember the Honey Drippers.
Yeah, Robert Plant.
Robert Plant, right.
So, in fact, I had this weird thing that happens
when you're a certain age
and you're introduced to an artist where you know a guy from, like, I knew that guy from Honey Drippers before I knew Led Zeppelin.
You know what I mean?
Wow.
Yeah.
So I don't know what year that was.
I'm going to say 82?
84, I think.
Okay.
So I'm 10 years old, basically, depending when it comes.
Maybe I'm 9 or 10.
And I'm hearing, like, that song was all over the place and I knew Robert Plant as the guy who who sang Sea of Love the Honey Drippers I know it happened with a couple other songs before that
who's the guy from the New York Dolls quickly who's in your dog David one david yo yeah so yeah david johansson i knew him first as uh what was
his character oh buster point dexter i knew buxter point dexter first and that's a good another
example where i i know a guy as buster and it's funny how once it's cemented in your head as like
a young man that this buster point dexter then you're like oh shit like he was actually this this cool new york dolls guy like
for me like robert plant for at least 18 months as i was learning about music was just tall cool
one yes okay that's like late like 87 maybe i want to say yeah 87 88 and they did the coke ad right
he did the coke yeah like i i'd never heard of like we weren't to like a q107 household so i had
no idea who led Zeppelin was.
Although then I think I went to like a school dance and heard Stairway to Heaven.
Yeah, and then you hear like, yeah, Black Dog.
And then you hear, yeah, rock and roll.
Or like commercials for Q107 with like, yeah, they do the rock and roll.
Which kind of scared, as a kid, that kind of scared me when I would hear that.
Like sort of the same way.
The Immigrant Song?
Yeah, the same way, the Immig the immigrant song the same way that the doctor
who theme scared me something about that i saw someone try to sing that at karaoke once that was
oh no that's scary like just yeah yeah just don't don't try zeppelin okay so what version did i play
right because i uh played it i played that Cat Power, who put it out in 2000.
It was in the movie Juno,
which must have been inspirational to my wife and I
because when we got married,
that version of Sea of Love by Cat Power
was in the ceremony.
We played it for the ceremony
because we also did the Moldy Peaches have a duet,
which I kicked out, actually.
Stu made fun of me for kicking it out, but I kicked out the Moldy Peaches have a duet which i kicked out actually stew made fun of me for kicking it out
but i kicked out the moldy peaches um during our duets i guess we had a duets episode of pandemic
like guys and guys and gals duets yeah and monica and i actually performed that at the
at the wedding ceremony so uh footage for this there might be footage of this actually somewhere
so i thought you i thought you were going to say, Mike,
that you have a child out there named Cat Power.
No, but I know Levee Fumka left the Zoom,
but she seemed to have some cat power because there were...
Literal cat power.
So there you go.
Sea of Love, which I think is a very pretty love song.
I'll say when I hear Cat Power,
who I think has come up,
she's come up a few times on Pandemic Fridays,
although I think I just remember when Ben Rayner was in your backyard
and he was getting almost, speak about sad songs,
the song Color and the Kids.
Remember when he played that in your backyard?
Totally.
He was saying you'd cry.
That was, yeah.
Man, those ben raynor backyard
sessions were something special man classics must essential listening i've known the name ben raynor
since the 1990s and it was this is sort of why i like listening to you mike because i get to find
out about these people that i are where where i guess can I say colleagues within the music? Contemporaries.
Yeah, contemporaries.
Yeah.
And to hear Ben, he's been on twice, if I'm not mistaken.
I think three times, actually.
Just in the summer alone, I think.
And it was great to hear his story.
And it's always great to hear stories from people that were around in the 1990s and covering music in one way, shape or form.
So, yeah, I really enjoyed those. Now, brother now brother this jam i'm gonna kick out for you i just want you to know when i was setting it up
my 16 year old uh was quite amused you chose this song so i don't know what that means but
uh we're gonna kick it out and then Only miss the sun when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know your lover when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know your lover when you let her go.
And you let her go.
Let her go.
Yeah.
I did not realize that you guys had done a sad song episode.
I probably just forgot because I'm usually listening to all of them.
I guess I really should have played it during a sad song episode
rather than our love song kind of stories.
But, you know, I thought that there's a, first of all,
there's a Vancouver connection to this song
and I can explain it to you in a little bit, but I'm working at the radio station. I just finished with, it was a
adult contemporary station. And that was the first time I'd ever heard this song was last year.
And I just remember loving the guy's voice. And that of course is the band Passenger or the man Passenger and a song called Let Her Go from, I want to say, 2012.
I think it would have been.
If you don't know, like I didn't know until I did some research, Passenger is just one person.
It's Michael Rosenberg from England, from Brighton, England, son of Quakers.
Yeah, didn't know that.
Originally, Passenger were a band,
but Mike, actually, the rest of the guys left,
and he kept the name when they left
and when they split up in 2009.
Like Alice Cooper.
Very similar, absolutely.
You're right.
I don't know about the sound,
but he left school at 16,
busked his way through australia
and england and actually somehow through his father who was in a roundabout way in the music
industry got himself on a bill of a very big australian music festival that's escaping my
name too right now but people saw him and he started doing clubs in the uk and uh and and
the rest as they say is history and the reason why I say there's a Vancouver connection,
Cam, you'll remember the name Network Records.
Sure, of course.
Out of Vancouver.
So his, let me make sure I get this straight,
he had an album out in 2012 called All the Little Lights
and that's the big song from it, Let Her Go,
which was released in 2012
and it was released on Network Records out of Vancouver.
So he did have a Vancouver connection there.
Now, you have a connection to FOTM Lee Aaron, right?
Well, in a roundabout way.
I mean, Lee went to high school in Brampton.
I went to high school in Brampton.
I worked at a Sam the Record Man
there and she used to come in and buy CDs from me. But I mean, I don't think she didn't remember.
You know why I bring it up? Because just like Alice Cooper and Passenger, she took on the name
of the band. She did. Same thing. It was a band first and then the Metal Queen. It was really odd
seeing Lee Aaron in the record store I worked at at the sam the record man in the bramley
city center coming in and buying jazz cds you know and not dressed up like the metal queen she was
just dressed normally she was just wearing so no no tassels kind of a leather jacket with the
no that was that was just her image i think on the stage off stage
it was like i remember her wearing a very lovely black all black one suit dress suit almost and
coming in and she used to ask me for jazz musicians and cds it was it was i mean keep in mind this was
the early 80s so this was the early days of cds as well but yeah, it was nice to hear her voice again,
that's for sure.
And she is a proud Bramptonian,
as most of us are, believe it or not.
Anyway, with Passenger though,
I'm interested in finding out
why your 16-year-old was interested
in knowing why I chose that
or why they were surprised or what have you.
I don't have great specifics on it,
but she seemed to think it was,
I don't know, the impression I got from her
was that it was a titch cheesy.
Oh, okay. That's cool.
I know. It's like, first of all,
I don't judge, as I told the great Mike Willner
when he kicked out the jams.
Your jams are your jams.
I'm not the jam judger here.
Unless you're kicking out some Bon Jovi,
I'm going to keep quiet.
Unless you're David Alter and you say that U2 song is a piece of that's true i did tell him that you hypocrite
your your favorite song sucks mr alter yeah so some things are just like over the line so here's
a fact for your daughter to show her that this old guy's a little hipper than she thinks. As of last month, the video for Let Her Go has been viewed on YouTube 2.8 billion times.
Wow.
That is 23rd on the list of most watched videos on YouTube.
Like just videos of any kind.
Any genre, 23rd.
You know what's weird, though?
videos of any kind.
Any genre.
Well, you know what's weird, though?
2.7 billion of those views are coming out of White Rock, British Columbia.
Number one?
Any idea what the number one watched
YouTube video is?
You'd have to really...
I feel like it was Gangnam Style
for a while, but probably...
It's from that part of the world but it's actually
called baby shark dance by pink thong okay yeah that that was big in this house not anymore but
it was when uh when morgan was like two years old that was a big deal hopefully that saved a little
face with me by giving you those fun facts you know who i get Passenger mixed up with? That guy, Hosier? Oh, yes.
He's Irish, I think.
Take Me to Church?
Yeah.
I get those two mixed up.
I like that Take Me to Church.
I like that song.
Yeah.
I just love his voice, and I also picked that because I thought that, you know, not all relationships end well.
I was going to say, it's not really a love song.
It's the opposite.
It seems like it's a breakup song, maybe. Right, and again,
I didn't know you guys did a sad song.
Oh, that's okay. Moving on.
Let me repeat ourselves one more time. Okay, I'm excited
to kick this one out. You ready, Cam?
Yes, and there'll be some visual
accompaniment for this.
Wow! In the chat room.
It's a good thing we're on Facebook
because it archives it there.
I love you from the bottom of my pencil case. chat room. It's a good thing we're on Facebook because it archives it there.
Shout out to Alan Cross.
He was there. You put me in my rightful place And I love the PRS checks that you bring Cheap, never cheap
I'll sing your songs till you're asleep
And when you've gone upstairs I'll creep
And ride it on
Down, down, down
Oh, Shelley, oh, Debbie, oh, Julie, oh, Jane
I wrote so many songs about you
I forget your name. I forget your name.
I forget your name.
Jennifer, Alison, Phillip, or Sue.
Deborah, Annabelle, Sue.
I forget your name.
Jennifer, Alison, Phillip, or Sue.
Deborah, Annabelle, Sue.
I forget your name.
Well done, Cameron.
This is Song for Whoever by the beautiful South who we mentioned last week.
So I think they were on my mind when I went through and tried to pick up.
Generally, all my picks are sort of CFNY-ish songs.
And certainly this, I'm sure, was in the mix back in the day just before we go into some fun facts
a couple of
relations in my mind
a couple of FOTMs
with the singer from the beautiful south
Paul Heaton
one we talk about how
you know Robert Plant to me
for a good stretch was
tall cool one guy
this song when I first started listening
to CFNY and kind of cool music,
I thought for the longest time this was
the Barenaked Ladies. Oh my god!
But wasn't it way ahead of the Barenaked
Ladies? It was, yeah.
But when I sort of hear this song on
the All Request
Breakfast or whatever,
at times it sounds so much like
Stephen Page singing. Am I wrong?
No, I can hear that for sure.
Absolutely. Can I give you a little fact?
A little factoid about Paul
Heaton. Paul Heaton dated
somebody who worked at CFNY
for a period of time.
Yeah, I really
shouldn't mention. She wasn't
an on-air person. It wasn't
Danny Elwell. I'll go with that.
But he did.
He dates someone from the offices.
No, not Vishna either.
I'm not going to tell you.
May Potts.
Let's just go with May Potts. She's the one who
would give me the least amount of crap if I said that.
Well, I'll say this. Not only does
Paul Heaton sound like FOT steven page he does i i dropped
this in the chat room he also sort of looks like fotm kevin frankish yeah i'm just looking at that
image in the chat right now and you're damn right yeah i agree i agree anyway and this of course
this is a good choice though man that's a choice. Great song. And this is the band that Alan Cross
had the Bad Experience interview with.
Yeah, and I could sort of see that.
They seem...
I don't know, one of those bands, even though
a lot of their music is just really
sort of beautiful and love songs.
I don't know. They always seem to have a bit of an edge
to them. They're from, I think we mentioned
this last week, but they're from Hull in the UK.
Tried to find
some other famous residents. The best I could
come up with was Mick Ronson.
That's a big one.
Long time guitarist for David Bowie,
amongst others. And also actor
Tom Courtney. Who I don't
know. I'd have to see. British actor.
Also, there was a song by the
band Yola Tango called Tom
Courtney. So there you go. by the band yola tango called tom courtney well so there you go um
big singles band in the uk this was a number two single in the uk overall not like the alternative
charts of the indie charts like this massive hit yeah only went to number 87 canada right similar
to the cure the song that kept this out of the number one spot was
Right on Time by
Black Box.
This is 1992 we're talking
about, Cam? No, this is 1989.
I don't think I quite realized how old
this song was. I guess it was their
first album after the Tausmarkens.
I definitely remember this band being much
big because my best friend
at the time had an exchange program with Germany.
He had a German guy come over and he was really into this band.
It was clear that this band was much bigger in Europe than they were in England.
I feel like they would, if not headline the Reading Festival,
they'd be second from the top if they weren't headlining.
They were huge.
They were well known for sure.
In the chat, I just want to shout out Andrew Ward who says
actually Stephen Page sounds
like Paul Heaton. It's not the other way around.
There you go.
Steve has shown up in the chat and he's asked a question.
I'll just ask it aloud. Did you guys
cover which song kept Oasis'
Wonderwall from the number one
spot?
We didn't cover that. I don't remember that fun fact.
But maybe if, Steve, you want to type in the answer,
I can share it with the universe.
I think it was 96. Would that have been 95?
96?
I wonder what it was.
As we wait, some thoughts on the
beautiful South from Andrew Ward.
They'd sell out Masonic Temple.
Or the concert hall.
We must have done well last week, though, because people are still talking about it midway through the next pandemic
friday yeah i know that britpop was that they're talking about britpop during our wonderful
valentine's day special come on guys get in the get in the mood here we're all in love with
passenger yeah before we go back to the the this song specifically i'm going to actually
circle back to something we talked about on the last episode about brit pop so with the beautiful
south they sort of mentioned they're sort of a band who's a bit hard to categorize because
they're definitely not a brit pop band but they're not an 80s band i guess they're a 90s band if you
look on spotify people who like the beautiful south you know they said you might
like you might also like yeah yeah the top three were the lightning seeds who were sort of also
not a brit pop band kind of just before from what i recall and had mid to late 80s yeah yeah and had
a world cup anthem the three lions like the soccer song. The Proclaimers.
Great band.
Oh, you don't like The Proclaimers?
Well, actually, I really only know two songs, to be honest.
I'm On My Way and
I Would Walk 500 Miles.
Let's Get Married.
Way more than that.
And the third band you might like
is The Style Council,
which is, of course, Paul Weller.
That makes sense. I took a pick at James
Who I famously scolded Mike
Not a Britpop band
But when I look at the You Might Like
Artist for James were the Charlatans
The Seahorses
Which was for John Squire's band
After the Stone Roses broke up
And then Ian Brown's solo
And then Cast.
So I don't know.
Maybe James R.
A Britpop band.
Thank you.
You know, retroactively, I'll accept that positive reaction there.
And I got to ask Steve in the chat, what chart are you talking about?
Because he says the Mike Flowers Pops.
We played that off the top of last week's episode.
Mike Flowers Pops version of Wonderwall kept Oasis' Wonderwall from the
number one spot. But what
chart are we talking about? Because that's not a Billboard
fact. There's no way Mike Flowers
hit number one on Billboard with his
Wonderwall. This is like the Dr. Demento.
Steve, get back to us.
We've got to get Andrew
Ward in here. He really knows his shit. Here's a
good fun fact. I remember when
this is Andrew Ward speaking. I remember when... This is Andrew Ward speaking.
I remember when World Cup 90
was in America. The beautiful South
toured North America specifically
to see various matches. Wow.
Okay. Andrew Ward... I believe that.
Andrew Ward, send me an email and
remind me of your address because
I'm going to drop off a Ridley Funeral
Home toque before spring
hits here. We got to get it to you. So just send me an email of your address and I'm going to drop off a Ridley Funeral Home toque before spring hits here. We've got to get it to you.
Just send me an email of your address
and tomorrow I'm going to bike over
a Ridley Funeral Home toque.
What a mensch.
Her product placement for her
dishwashing liquid is
perfect. Are they the new sponsor
of...
Social media influencer here.
If it's not a cat, it's
sunlight detergent.
Anyway.
All right. I'm going to go in a little
mix. My second jam is in.
OK, so by the way, Steve's apologizing.
It wasn't the Mike Flowers. It was a
UK chart he's talking about. So UK
charts are funky. We don't we don't deal with
the UK charts. Here is my
second love song. As the shadow crosses mine What it takes to form a lie
It's the way I'm feeling
I just can't deny
But I've got to let it go
We found love in a hopeless place you guys dancing over there oh yeah you're Good. That's what I want to hear.
I love this song.
My neighbors are calling 911.
We found love, guys.
Of course, this is Rihanna.
But of course, it's
one of those modern
phenomenons where the song doesn't get
credited necessarily to the artist.
I think this gets primarily credited to Calvin Harris, I believe. modern phenomenons where the song doesn't get like credited necessarily to the artist i think
this gets primarily credited to calvin harris i believe uh maybe it's a collab but uh calvin
harris is a scottish dj and he produced this song and he wrote this song but it's rihanna's uh voice
we're hearing on the jam we fell in love in a hopeless place I've always thought this is a real sweet love song there's something about
like love conquering
all like regardless of
if it's a pandemic
or a war zone or
shit flying left right and center like
true love
can conquer all I don't know if I'm being a
sentimental fool because Valentine's Day is
coming but I love this song for that
reason so the guy you mentioned Calvin Harris yes what you said Mike was very touching I'm
very moved by this on behalf of Stu Stone may I say very lovely um Calvin Harris is one of the
you know this is a completely different show altogether but and I don't know how much I can
even go into a cam you probably can go into much more depth than i can about the whole dj scene
in europe um in the 2000s and right up to this day but calvin harris as far as i know is one of
the big names so i think the reason why it's a rihanna song is for North American audiences where it would probably be a Calvin
Harris song in Europe.
I feel like for
me, and obviously it's a bit different
since there's no concerts, almost like
the
power rankings
for how big some of these artists are
every summer when we see
all the music festivals and see where everyone's
ranking.
Because I remember seeing when Calvin Harris actually headlined one of the days
on the Coachella Festival. It's like, holy shit,
this guy's a big fucking deal.
Well, you know who's a big fucking deal?
Sadly, he took his own life because he had a lot of
struggles and challenges.
The Swedish gentleman?
Avicii.
Too soon, Cam.
Sorry, I killed it.
Now you owe us all an apology.
Oh my God, I'm sorry.
Avicii.
There's a special place in hell for comments like that.
I'm awful.
Anyway, go on, Mike.
It's okay.
Avicii is the guy.
Right.
He took his own life.
Terrible way too, but we won't get into that in this nice lovey-dovey episode.
But there are a lot of big jams from Avicii that are catchy as all hell,
but completely not credited to the artist
because the artist,
the gentleman who's Aloe Blacc,
I think his name is,
not as big a name as Rihanna,
who's a monster success big name.
And Aloe Blacc was never anywhere near these credits,
but he would be the singer
on a lot of these big Avicii hits, for example.
But that guy was pretty prolific, actually, Avicii.
Yeah, so Avicii was... He was in his 20s, pretty prolific, actually, Avicii. Yeah, he was like in his 20s, wasn't he?
Yeah, he was young.
Wasn't he Swedish?
Yeah, I know, he was Swedish, definitely Swedish.
Well, there was another guy from Sweden
that nobody really knows,
and I bet you, Cam, you know his name,
but he's like responsible for writing,
I mean, 25, 30 of the biggest hits for, you know...
Yeah, Martin, his name's Martin, something Martin.
Is that what it is? Max Martin. Like Taylor Swift and Katie... Max Martin. His name is Martin. Something Martin. Is that what it is?
Max Martin. Taylor Swift and Katie. Max Martin.
Max Martin. That's his name. Yeah. This guy
has written songs
for all of the big pop artists
in the last 10 years really
and no one knows who
he is either but again
that's more a situation where he's a songwriter.
I think he started with like Backstreet Boys or
something like that
Britney Spears I feel like
he had broken English so like
Hit Me Again
what's the title of that song by the way
Hit Me Baby One More Time
that's like you know Hit Me Baby
what's that mean but it's his broken English
way of being like hit me up
call me kind of deal
don't like hit me sorry Cam call me kind of deal right right don't like hit me so yeah
sorry cam um what i was going to say is we're talking about djs uh my favorite film of all time
is about a dj from abitha spain who goes deaf does that ring a bell at all with anybody no beethoven no it was a movie actually done by
the same guys that did foobar these two guys are these three guys from calgary this is peter tong
or that's what it's called it's called it's all gone pete tong and if you want to see a great
movie with a great message sold and you feel like a little bit of a cry um yeah it's all
gone p-tong it's a story of this dj in ibiza spain who goes deaf and it has all of the other
big djs at the time in it like armin van helman or whatever his name is you know all those kind
of people wow awesome i didn't realize that was the food bar like i remember the name of that
guys i didn't realize wow yep same guys can i can remember the name of that movie. I didn't realize. Wow. Yeah, same guys.
Can I just say a comment about Rihanna
before we go to the next game?
Of course.
She's like prolific, this woman.
She's wonderful.
Yeah, I don't remember if it was on Pandemic Fridays
or maybe, believe it or not,
I have other friends that I speak to.
I don't believe it.
We were talking about this.
They speak about music with specifically.
I almost feel like Rihanna is underrated.
Wow. Just the sheer, like if look at her like wikipedia page just the sheer number of songs she's been on like and not just
you know massive massive hits and she sort of never has gone away and she's not she's still
young yeah yeah i feel like she's like what 33 or something because she started so i agree with you because my aforementioned 16 year old back before she got into cooler music when she was
into like the pop stuff that was a common ground was rihanna because i i can dig the rihanna vibe
and she's like she's everywhere with you know monster hits yeah i think we did talk about this
on an early pandemic fridays where we played sos where she's famously sampled
soft cell tainted love which was i think one of her first jams right um i probably had the
same epiphany because this is why i think of rihanna i just think how how is this person
massively successful but still my mind underrated yeah good good call because she's so much more
like hit laden than a madonna for
example who seems to be um overrated or like beyonce for example it's like great great too
just hasn't put out that spoiler alert you might hear some beyond it beyonce royalty of the the r
and b or the pop scene in the u.s but she is right yeah beyonce and she and i oh beyonce okay because
i was going to point out
the fun fact that everybody knows,
which is Rihanna is not American.
People think she's American.
She's from Bahamas, isn't she?
Barbados, I want to say.
Barbados.
Barbados.
Yeah.
Yeah, she's Barbados.
Good for her to be able to make it that far
and not even be from the United States.
That must have taken some work as well.
You got it.
Well, yeah, honestly.
In Barbados, what's the population
of the Barbados?
Like a million?
Three.
Three hundred thousand, maybe, honestly, in Barbados, what's the population of the Barbados? Like a million? Three. 300,000 maybe?
Hey, you know, can I just interject for a second here?
I know there's a video portion
and there's the podcast portion,
but our friend leave here.
I don't think, like, her and her partner there
must do the dishes like once every year
because this guy's still doing dishes.
He's been doing dishes for the last hour and a half.
Well, you know, she turned her camera off.
I think they had a quickie.
I think they turned the camera off.
They got inspired by the music.
That's why he's smiling so greatly right now.
Look at that.
I think so.
The music.
We couldn't help ourselves.
These love jams got to them.
Seriously, do you do the dishes more than once a year?
He's taking his time because he likes to listen and he's watching.
Okay.
And he knows he's on time and watching are two things.
He's doing the dishes for me.
I don't have to do the dishes at night.
Wow.
Happy Valentine's Day.
Sorry to go take this show into other realms.
Well, brother, are you ready for your third jam?
If the guy doing the dishes is ready, I'm ready.
He's ready.
Oh, it's got a slow build here.
So I don't know if you want to talk over it,
but this should be played, I think, on our boat jams episode.
The ship, your boat jams.
Yeah, boat jams.
Yes.
Boats and lighthouses.
Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. No matter where I roam I will return to my English rules
For no bonds can ever tempt me from sea
I sailed the seven seas
Flown the whole blue sky
But I return with haste
To where my love does lie
No matter where I go
I will come back to my English Rose.
For nothing can ever tempt me from she.
I'll search the secret mists.
English Rose, the jam.
By the jam.
Yes.
Yeah, that's by the jam. By the jam. Yes. Yeah, that's by the jam.
Again, I guess you could say it would have fit more into the sad songs,
Pandemic Friday, but I went with that one because I grew up in Brampton,
and I grew up in an era where all of my friends, including my parents,
were immigrants.
We're all the children of immigrants, first generation of immigrants. They were all the children of immigrants,
first generation of immigrants.
And my mother is from England
and my dad was, albeit born in Toronto,
he was first generation.
His parents were from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
And I picked the jam English Rose
because he mentions love in there,
but not so much a love between people, but a love
for one's home. And being on the West Coast, but being originally from Ontario, I picked that one
because there is a love for the place that you come from, no matter where you are. And I'll try
and expand on that a little. And what I mean by that is, is that, for instance, people say to me, do you miss Ontario? And my obvious answer is to say,
well, no, not really. That's why I left. But you will always miss where you are from. You will
always miss home. And for me, although I live in White Rock, British Columbia, home for me will always be Brampton, Ontario.
And so I picked that song from a different perspective because going back to what I was saying about the children of immigrants, you know, although my friends who had Scottish and Irish and English and wherever Italian Portuguese parents
they always had the soft spot for home and they always talked about going home and home for them
obviously was somewhere in Europe and you know I just thought that I thought I'd take a different angle at the love sort of angle or the love the pandemic
Friday deal with a story of love and go with the love of a place as opposed to a person. So that's
why I picked that. So the jam were three guys from Surrey, England, which is the home of where my
actually relatives live now, led by Paul Weller, of course,
who is an absolute legend in the UK.
Meanwhile, I think if he played in Canada,
he plays maybe to a thousand people tops sort of thing.
He'd play the, I can't even remember the name of the venue,
Phoenix, if it's still around.
Yeah, it's still around.
That kind of thing.
The Jam formed in 1972, and they actually broke up at the height of their success in
1982.
An album called, I believe it's called The Gift, and their big song from it was their
first big hit.
It was called Town Called Malice.
And they were around for maybe another five months after that.
Paul Weller, good friends with Noel Gallagher,
tying back to our Brit pop from last week.
And a quick story, Paul Weller came into our studios
in Brampton once in 83 Kennedy Road,
another wonderful human being with absolutely no ego whatsoever.
And he was with his father.
His father was named John, and John was his manager.
And wherever Paul went in the world, John went with him.
And John wore a watch.
He wore a watch.
And I remember looking at the watch and saying, what time do you have?
Because it was not our time in, you know, East Eastern time, whatever.
And he kept, he kept, he told me the story that he kept
his watch on greenwich meantime which is london which is europe which is england rather and he
kept it that way so he never got jet lag so he would go to bed when it was midnight english time
wherever he was in the world it could be in aust Australia where it's noon and he would go to bed.
And I remember that story, him telling me that.
And just the bond that he had with Paul Weller, his son, I thought was very special.
Unfortunately, he passed away in, I believe it was 2009.
But just a little story about Paul Weller and why I chose English Rose by the jam.
That's why you're here, brother, because those stories like that,
Cam and I don't have any stories like that.
So we need you for those.
We're like repeating ourselves.
That's amazing.
So what year was that you said when he came in?
It would have probably been around 92 or 93 because we were still at our brampton studios
at 83 kennedy road south okay and he would have been touring i think one of either his first or
his second solo album because paul released 16 he's released 16 solo albums he's still going today
the jam released six and that was english rose by the way was not a single from an album called
all mod cons which is an English term.
Cam, you'll know what that means.
But Mike, do you know what All Mod Cons means?
Tell me.
I don't know.
Do you know, Cam?
I don't know that exact expression.
I mean, I certainly know what a mod is.
Liev just said it.
Say it again.
All Modern Conveniences. It's a british english term
yeah for all modern conveniences so if i if i was a real estate agent i would show you into a home
and say it's got all all mod cons oh interesting yeah well mimico mike i think would use it now
sammy had his shot and now it's mimico mike here yeah so that's why i chose that song looking at
it great choice neil great story oh sorry cam go ahead yeah i was gonna and now it's Mimico Mike here. Yeah, so that's why I chose that song, looking at it differently. Great choice, Neil.
Great story.
Sorry, Cam, go ahead.
Yeah, I was going to say that it's interesting
because I just remember reading about the jam
when they first formed,
because they were like really, really young.
I want to say they were 15, 16.
Teenagers, yeah.
And reading about his dad being the manager back then,
and sort of getting into it
with all those sort of infamous punk,
because they came up, they were kind of like a punk rock band that first uh i think it was called in
the city like their first album or their first single yeah which is which very much was of the
era just really prolific i'm trying to think because paul weller's solo is a real blind spot
for me somehow like he never did he his solo stuff did it get played on cfny early early stuff
did and then it sort of disappeared we never played i think we played maybe songs from the
first two or three albums and then we didn't anymore what was this uh carnaby road or something
or he had i feel like there's the one big album it It was like a street name. Well, I remember the big song in 92 was,
uh-huh.
Oh yeah.
That was his big song,
but I don't remember album titles either to tell you the truth.
I was more a jam fan than a Paul Weller fan.
I'll be,
I did like Paul's music,
but more in passing than the jam,
the jam were started as a punk band and then they ended up leading a
movement called the mod movement.
As a matter of fact,
Paul Weller is known as the mod father uh and again harping back to a movie we talked about last week
quadrophenia with the who if you want to learn about all the mods which the jam ended up becoming
the sort of the token band if you will the the figurehead musically for the movement quadrophenia
talks about the mods and the rockers and all that in the
uk there you go of course in between was uh the style council too so and the style council is a
band that paul formed just after the jam uh which also featured a guy whose name escapes me who is
actually from my family's hometown in the uk which is is Wimbledon. So that's where he was from.
It's weird.
It all ties in.
Brother, it's weird how your family lives in Surrey in the UK,
but now you live in Surrey, BC.
Wait, is it not true?
Because I was there a couple years ago.
I thought that White Rock was in Surrey.
No.
No.
We are like Barcelona.
We are a separate state.
Okay, but you border Surrey?
Surrey surrounds us.
Surrounds you.
With the exception of the Pacific Ocean behind me.
Surrey surrounds us,
but White Rocks separated from Surrey in 1953
because they didn't feel that they were being treated too fairly.
Now you know how I feel when someone says I live in Mimico.
I understand.
So Brother Bill,
Ivor Hamilton, he's at
UMG, right? That's where he is?
Universal? Universal Music, yeah.
Okay. They just put a
They just fired everybody?
No, no, no.
This live stream. So the reason the
great Ian Service has us at
live.torontomic.com is that
we're like pirates.
You can't touch us, UMG.
But we also tried putting it on Facebook, and they just blocked it in like 200 countries
because of 58 seconds of audio that UMG owns.
And after the program, I'll find out exactly which song got us killed.
But I just, that's why we're pirates.
I'm going to guess it was the Beautiful South song. I'll let you
know after because I'll check it after when I can listen
to the audio. But here, let me kick out,
unless Cam, you want to say something, I'm going to go into your third
jam here. No, no
intro for this. This song needs no
introduction.
It's going to make me cry.
You call this a love song?
It's been seven hours and 15 days
since you took your love away.
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you've been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing, I said nothing can take me where the truth
Cause nothing compares to you
Nothing compares to you
I was going to say the next part, but it's rude.
Get in some head.
Yeah, that was it.
Honestly, Cam, honestly, I want to hear about...
That's where we are in this program now
listen okay it's after 7 30 we've talked about this cam and i but any song that gets put in the
mix of like a good girl talk jam i go directly into what he mashed it with and i do it for even
songs i've always loved like this like i do it for this song too tell us about shenaid o'connor's
nothing compares to you nothing cares well i just going to throw out a provocative statement here.
I'm not saying I agree with this,
but I think you could argue that this statement is true.
This was the biggest alternative music song of the 1990s.
The whole decade, not the year.
The whole decade.
It was the biggest
song?
Just sort of like, you know,
there's no way to really quantify this, but
you could argue... What about Wonderwall?
Sure, you could go back for
a little Wonderwall, a little...
Smells like teen spirit?
Ever heard of it?
But I just say this because
when I look at the chart performance of this song,
the number of countries Sinead O'Connor went to number one in.
US, Canada.
This is just for 1990 of the year.
This is not overall.
This is the number three song in the US in 1990 for that year.
Number three in Canada.
Number one song of the year in Australia, the Netherlands.
Number two in the UK.
Okay, but I feel like a Landis Morris set
would be just as big, if not bigger.
Yeah, yeah.
And then, you know, again,
there's no way to quantify this,
but this song was...
Was a monster.
Fucking monster.
Fucking monster.
Crack.
And for the record,
I wasn't tearing up a picture of the Pope there,
in case you were wondering.
It was just a piece of paper. Oh, fuck. That right there mike i i i i i did contemplate trying to
get a photo of uh like mark weisblatt or something like do you guys remember when she got booed
after that she got booed doing something and chris christopherson came on the stage and gave
her this big fucking hug.
Yeah, it's like a Bob Dylan tribute concert or something.
This moment's etched in my brain as like forever that Chris Christopherson is a good dude because he just gave her a hug.
And as these idiots were booing her because she ripped the picture of the fucking Pope.
Come here, dude.
Like, come here, kid.
But yeah, I mean, that moment, a lot of people said that kind of ruined her career.
Destroyed her career.
Fucking bullshit.
Destroyed it.
She's had a lot of challenges in the years since.
Also recently, a lot of just sort of weird gone missing.
And I think she's a...
She has mental health issues.
Yeah, we talked about her a bit last week.
But yeah, I mean, what a voice.
Is she a priestess or some she's a priestess or some kind of a
religious something like that i i had i had the the i don't want to say pleasure
but i have met shanaid i i interviewed her just before i i left uh the edge in about 2002 or
something i think she put out an album uh i can't remember what it was called but um you know some
interviews go very well and some interviews don't go very well that was easily top two worst
interviews i've ever done she was not very accommodating at all to the point where where
the interview was over and i asked her kindly if i could get a picture taken with her she looked at
me right in the face and said absolutely not wow yep I mean I've had a few say no I've had a few
Billy Corgan made me sign away wanted me to sign a 25 page wager I said no it's not worth it but
just to get a photo Connor yeah just get a photo but Sinead O'Connor was outright not hostile but just not liking me for some reason at
all I I did I didn't do my best work that day I know that but it was just she was not nice was
this one of the interviews where like you let the fans in was this like the street level yeah we had
the studio at 228 young street which is one young and shooter and we would let the kids come in and i mean i
don't mean to be disrespectful but she was well past her big days of night the early 1990s with
nothing compares to you written by prince by the way yeah we'll get to that oh sorry sorry
anyway she was not very nice no and and And, you know, she's had troubles.
She's had mental health issues.
I want to say since she was dating Peter Gabriel in the mid-1990s.
It's been not good times for Sinead on and off.
I hope she's in a great spot.
Yeah, I feel like she had a few moments where she could have rebounded.
We talked about last week how she was on the Lollapalooza tour in 1995,
replaced by Elastica.
After like one show?
Yeah, she just dropped off.
And then I know she did some vocals.
I want to say on one of the Massive Attack albums.
Maybe Mezzanine, like she did.
Didn't you kick that out?
Didn't you kick it out?
The girl from that was from the Cocteau Twins.
Well, she was like Lisa Gerrard.
She was on it too, but there was like,
she did do some vocals with Massive Attack at some point too.
I'm pretty sure it might've been the next album,
like 100th Window or whatever that was.
It would make sense.
It would make sense.
Yeah, but just kind of drift in and out
and then you just hear weird stuff.
And yeah, all the mental stuff.
And I feel like she went missing
it like near chicago she did go missing for sure yeah for sure so so she played a show at the then
diamond in the show her first album that was her second album i do not want what i haven't got her
first album oh serpent serpent and the yeah serpent the lion right right there you go so she had some big songs off that Mandinka
Troy
which scared the shit out
like talk about like videos that's like scary
it's scary build up yeah
she's all covered in paint and stuff
she played the diamond
and then
after her show there was like a
dance club and she came out and danced
with everybody for like she's only 18 then.
She couldn't get into clubs and bars.
Diamond is what turned into the Phoenix.
Yeah, the Phoenix.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that's a little story.
No, it's again, it's very easy to forget what a BFD she was in shorthand.
That's a big fucking deal.
Well, this song.
Go ahead.
I'm sorry, man.
I was going to say, I think maybe you
compared her Alanis Morissette because the
video for Nothing Compares to You
and one of Alanis' from Jagged
Little Pill are just a shot of her face.
Yeah. Right. Hand over
feet.
Right. I will just
say this because I own the CD.
I do not want what I have in God. I bought the disc.
And I want to say, as a follow-up single goes i thought emperor's uh new clothes i think
that was what it's called the emperor's new clothes i thought it was a kick-ass great follow-up single
i don't know how it did or whatever but uh anyway so she's not a one-hit wonder when you come off of
a monster song like nothing compares to you though it doesn't matter what you're going to release
it's not going to have the impact.
I remember I have a very
specific Much Music memory.
I'm going to give two fun facts
and then I'll move on.
One of those video packages,
like a montage, where they mashed up
Sinead O'Connor dancing
in the video for
Emperor's New Clothes and Michael Stipe dancing
in the video for Losing My Religion
because they were both sort of like
that anyway.
A little Gordone-esque.
Anyway, when you said she wouldn't take a photo
with you, it reminded me
the one time a professional athlete
wouldn't let me take a photo
with him.
Can I guess?
Can I give you a fun clue yeah
paul coffee no it's someone who's actually taller than me oh usain bolt how tall are you
i'm six five are you really a huge wow he's a tall guy i did not know that he's taller than you
yeah so michael phelps michael Phelps. No, it's actually not basketball.
Michael Phelps is a good guess.
He's tall.
I'll give you a clue.
Dan Shulman was there at the time.
Well, that's baseball.
It wasn't Dan Shulman.
Oh, Randy Johnson.
Randy Johnson, yes.
He was a guest at Jay's Talk.
Wow.
And I was like 13.
Wow.
This is a bomb you're dropping here.
I think he signed
a baseball card.
I'm like, oh,
my voice probably hadn't even broke.
It's like, have a photo.
That's how I sound now.
I thought he would have turned to you, Cam,
and said, have you ever killed a bird?
That's right.
I think this is pre-dead bird.
Because him and Dave Winfield are in the bird that's right well i think this is pre-bird dead bird because him and dave winfield
are in the uh the bird killing killing a bird i'm gonna quickly circle back um the brother
mentioned the song famously written by prince i think we all know that by now
shanae o'connor was on norwegian radio in 2014 this sounds like made up the norwegian radio part
but let's just go with it.
She never got a photo either.
Yeah, but talks about her experience
of meeting Prince and they apparently
did not really cross paths. This is
what she said on Norwegian radio
about six years ago.
He summoned me to his house.
We consume it's like Paisley Park
and it's a foolish thing to
do this to an Irish woman. He said he didn't like me saying bad words in interviews so i told him to fuck off not quite but no this takes
a turn he got quite violent i had to escape out of his house at five in the morning he packed a
bigger punch than mine what now she said this six years ago which is sort of you know i'm not saying
it's not true who knows because prince there's a lot of stories about Prince, too.
Possibly an unreliable narrator.
Is that what you're suggesting?
Yeah, but also think about what a combustible pair,
like putting those two together.
Because I know Prince can ball.
I didn't know he was that kind of balling, though.
Yeah, so anyway, Sinead, you know,
apparently that was her one encounter with Prince.
Wow.
Yeah. But Monster Jam,
good choice. Beautiful song.
Made them both a lot of money anyway, right?
Okay.
Now in hindsight, I just want to say for the record
because I got some complaints from people who said
they want the five jams back, but honestly
we put it down to four and we're still going
long because there's so many fun facts.
I'm a fan of the four.
Yeah, me too. Because more time to banter.
Blue Jays banter.
Here's my penultimate jam.
It's looking like the limb torn All or all
Together just
Taken apart
Wheeling through an endless fall
We are the ever-living ghost of
What once was
But no one
Is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one's gonna love you more than I
do
band
of horses
wow
just a song I've always liked that I think is
very sweet this is no one's gonna
love you which if you just took that
title at face value you'd say it can't
be a love song no one's gonna love you but then
of course it continues to say
no one's going to love you more than I do.
And I just think
it's a great sentiment. It's from
Band of Horses, their second
album, Cease to Begin.
Just sounds fucking great.
Ever since the first time I heard this, it's got the
great vocals. It's got that great
romantic
sentiment or whatever. There's a good guitar in there and it's just a cool kind of, I don't know, sentiment or whatever.
There's a good guitar in there and it's just a cool fucking jam.
I don't know what you guys think of band of horses.
What was your introduction to band of horses?
A funeral,
I believe,
unless I'm misremembering the order of things.
Sorry,
you heard it at a funeral?
No,
no band of horses had a song called funeral.
Oh,
okay.
Sorry.
I completely missed that.
Mike used to go to random funerals.
I heard it at Ridley Funeral.
Yeah, me and Brad.
Ridley Funeral Home, you know, free for what they call it,
amateur Wednesday funerals or something,
and you just walk in and sit down.
Yeah, Brad Jones and I were kicking it out in the visitation.
So you have to help me, Mike.
I don't know Band of Horses at all.
Who are they?
So Ben, the big jam, okay, and the way i was introduced to it is a strange but i think others
might have experienced the same thing but there was like a skateboarding video that went viral
and the music over top of the skateboarding video was a song called funeral by band of horses and i
fucking instantly loved this song funeral to a point where if you ask my teenagers
i always said oh you can play the song at my funeral because the song called funeral by i
mean it is called funeral so that was noted right on the nose although i don't actually want a
funeral but don't tell ridley funeral home that it might jeopardize the deal we just signed so
who are band of horses um what can i do okay now i gotta i gotta do some fucking homework here
brother okay sorry about that no i know the name but that's all i know i've never heard them before okay so they were
played a lot on your former station 102.1 quite a bit so they're but uh what what year did you
leave edge 2004 okay that's the year that this band kind of started things off so i think you
just missed him when you were working there though yeah i guess so so what kind of music was cfox playing um sort of a hybrid between the edge and q107 but i guess the best
way to say it was we were the edge but we played metallica oh yes okay so like hits hits way to
describe it hits 97.7 maybe or maybe like uh yeah yeah we we we we would play the odd, you know, heavy Iron Maiden.
Black Crows were big on certain shows.
But I mean, we played a lot of the modern rock.
And 2000 obviously was alt metal, was the new metal stuff.
So we played a lot of Linkin Park.
A lot.
Along with Metallica.
But you know what?
I don't mind the Linkin Park, to be quite honest.
Me neither.
I liked it, actually.
But okay, so basically, I'm just now looking at their discography here so they've been around
since like oh four they're out of seattle at least that's where they were formed okay and uh they got
five studio albums under and uh yeah there's an alternative band that just fucking sounds great
like a lot of their i'm very surprised you say they're from Seattle, given that I'm only 90 minutes from Seattle.
Again, I know the name, but it doesn't resonate with me at all.
There's an entire band of horses clumping around.
Okay, so here's a...
A lot of rural areas in between.
The big singles from the radio.
I mentioned the funeral, so there you go.
But is there a ghost?
Do you remember this?
Is there a ghost in my house?
I don't think I realized these guys got radio play.
The funeral, is there a ghost and no one's going to love you?
Wady Ghost, I remember.
Yeah, well, right.
That's right.
Wady Ghost, a Canadian band, right?
Wintersleep.
Wintersleep, that's right.
So those three bands.
And I think they're still active Band of Horses but that song
is particularly sweet.
I have a shitty concert experience related
to Band of Horses.
We talked a little bit last episode about
infamously, I was going to say
famously but I'll just say infamously
Noel Gallagher getting pushed
off stage at Virgin Festival.
This is probably
like three years when they still
used to use the island for concerts.
I feel like I mentioned
other elements of this concert over the years
on Toronto Mic when
Pavement reunited and played a
big show on the island with
Broken Social Scene
and Band of Horses and
Beach House played. It was quite a lineup.
But just the worst organized
like i deserve the entire band of horses set i spent in it was either beach house or band of
horses i think it was band of horses i was in the line to get beer tickets oh no this is one of
those deals where you have to line up to get the beer tickets and then line up to get the beer
they're like okay where's the beer it's like oh up to get the beer. They're like, okay, where's the beer? It's like, oh, that line.
And like, you know, I'm like,
you know, I'm at like Conco Fun Fair. I'm like,
fuck this.
So I think we like sold them to like
someone else in the line. And it's like, oh, you know,
all of the missing entire band of horses
set. It was just, it was such a bad set up.
Because you were waiting in line to get alcohol.
It was cool to be on the island.
Check out Funeral. Brother Bill, that on the island. Check out Funeral.
Brother Bill,
that's your homework.
Check out Funeral
by Band of Brothers.
I will for sure.
I'll check them out.
I want to discover them
for sure.
I was going to say,
so I don't remember
ever there being
shows on the island.
Did they only do this
as sort of a trial
kind of thing
for a couple of years?
I think they did
a few virgin festivals.
Well, Chin Picnic
used to be at the island.
Like Chin Picnic used to be there, right. Like, Chin Picnic used to be there.
Right? Yeah. Right. No, I meant
more like the indie
alt-rock kind of bands and stuff.
Probably like a five-year stretch, because Arcade Fire
played a big show there with
I want to say like Janelle Monae
played with them, which is kind of interesting.
Do you kayak
over there? What's the deal? You get to take the ferry?
You swim, actually. You swim? Just like walk across in the dead fish. do you kayak over there what's the deal you get to take the ferry you swim actually you swim just
like walk across in the dead fish they should do in the winter you could walk across the ice i think
be like doing eddie money uh walk on walk on water right i'll never a quick story for you i'll never
forget what uh going on a cruise through the the islands the toronto islands once it was an edge
cruise we had a couple bands we had a band from ajax that weren't some 41 i can't remember what they're called that era anyway so not by choice not by choice it was not
by choice absolutely wow that's great did you also know daryl dwarf was there from no anyway uh so
we're we're we're looking in the water and there's a dead pig lying in the water and i remember my
producer at the time was a guy who he just looked down at the dead pig looks
over he goes what is this jersey anyway I thought it was funny at the time um but uh yeah I will
discover band of horses I'd like to hear what they what they sound like because that song sounded
very good but yeah I don't know I'm sorry guys kind of tying into the reason I asked about the
island was because in British Columbia a couple of years ago or a few years ago now,
it used to be the same way where you'd line up for your beer tickets and
then you'd had to line up for the beer.
So the government actually has,
we're now allowed to like,
if somebody puts on a festival like that,
you can just grab beer wherever and you can walk around with it and stuff.
There's no beer garden.
That makes so much sense,
man.
I think our beer,
whatever these laws are so archaic,. I think our beer, whatever, these laws
are so archaic.
Pure tannical. We had sneaky
Great Lakes beer at TMLX6
in a public park.
There's photos on Twitter
of Mike and I drinking GLD.
That's true. MF.
You and MF, you're enjoying a cold
on my birthday.
Just be responsible. Can you get beer in corner stores. On my birthday. It's all on the internet. That's right. Just be responsible.
Can you get beer in corner stores there yet?
In some grocery stores, you can get beer.
Grocery stores?
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's getting better.
But you got to buy it in small quantities.
Yeah.
That's better than us.
We can get wine in supermarkets, but we can't get anything else.
Oh, yeah.
We got the same thing. And then we have
government liquor stores and private liquor stores.
You can buy the wine in supermarkets,
but I think it has to be made in Ontario.
It has to be Ontario wine.
That's the same with us with BC.
I was friendly with a guy
who used to work with whatever
the BC brewery that made...
I think it's called Red Rocket.
Is that a beer?
No, Red Truck. There's one with a girl who rocket is that a beer that's like a red one with
a girl who's on a bicycle it's like a green can red truck is that what it is yeah i think yeah
that's sounding red truck to me and he just told me like a 30 minute story about how hard it was
to get that beer into ontario anywhere like it's just it's so wild like it's i don't have the most barriers we have the most
bizarre without this turning into a beer podcast but it really we have the most bizarre rules where
we can uh send we can't send our alcohol to alberta for some reason but we can send it to
ontario it's really it's a really messed up thing anyway i'm glad i'm not involved with it it's red
racer is the song about.
Brother, we're going to kick out our final
jams here. It's been fantastic as
always, but do you want to say anything before your final
jam or can I just kick it? Oh, it's my final jam?
Correct. Okay.
I think I finally nailed a
love song here.
The REM song was a love song.
Sure, in a dark way.
This is a guy that I think is one of the most,
if not the most underrated artist of not all time,
but definitely this generation.
This guy has never written a radio hit in his 63 years on the planet.
He is a phenomenal hit in his 63 years on the planet.
He is a phenomenal man in black.
This is a song actually that he performed at Michael Hutchins' funeral.
You'll never find that though,
because he asked for the cameras to be turned off when he did this song live.
Go ahead, Mike. ¶¶ I don't believe in an interventionist God But I know, darling, that you do
that you do But if I did
I would kneel down
and ask him
not to intervene
when it came
to you
Well not to touch your hair and your head
Leave you as you are
If he felt he had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Into my arms, oh Lord.
Into my arms, oh Lord.
Into my arms, oh Lord.
Into my arms.
There you go.
That's the legendary Nick Cave
and a song called Into My Arms.
I think it's pretty straightforward.
Just, he's...
I think the song speaks for itself.
I really don't need to get into what it's about.
It's pretty obvious.
Nick Cave, to me is is again as i
mentioned before we we started playing it i think one of the most underrated songwriters up one of
the under most underrated songwriters of all time this guy has has been around since the early 70s
he was the lead singer of a punk band from Australia between 1978 and 1983 called The Birthday Party.
He formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Then he disbanded them and started another band called Grinderman and then reformed the Bad Seeds.
The Bad Seeds have released 17 albums.
He was living in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the time in the 1990s
when he released Into My Arms from an album called The Boatman's Car,
I want to say.
I could be wrong on that one.
I think it was The Call.
Call, I'm sorry.
That's it.
From 1997.
It went to number five on the Australian charts.
It did not chart in Canada, which is no surprise
because I think Nick Cave is like football or soccer, popular everywhere else in the world except North America.
I'm with you, man.
Yeah, and he's written some fantastic sad songs, love songs.
He's a very melancholy guy.
He wears black.
I mean, a sad story. He lost his son in 2015 when he was living in, of all places, a guy I mentioned before, Brighton, England.
His son was 15 years old and fell off a cliff and died. I think he's living in Los Angeles now,
but he's worked with absolutely everybody. He's collaborated with the likes of Shane McGowan, Nico Case,
Deborah Harry, Kylie Minogue, Marian Faithful.
His songs have been covered from the likes of Metallica, Johnny Cash, Snoop Dogg.
He's a screenplay writer.
He actually wrote the screenplay to the sequel for Gladiator
because Russell Crowe,
who's also Australian,
obviously was one of his best friends or is one of his best friends.
Unfortunately,
the studios in Hollywood didn't like the screenplay,
so it never got made.
But I mean,
just the guy is just,
he's,
he's done it all and everything he does is with passion and just,
he's an incredible songwriter.
I feel like he's had amazing lasting power to the degree.
And yeah, they're definitely not as popular in North America,
but got popular enough to the point where they actually played
at the Arcana Center.
Oh, did they?
Three years ago, more like in sort of the reconfigured like six thousand right
um because i knew some people who went and said it was actually like badly undersold i think they
may be overestimated but yeah i don't know i have a weird like bookends with nick cave in the bad
sea specifically and sort of the end of concerts because i was lucky enough i got to see him at
convocation hall i was just checking as you were sort of giving some of the background there.
This was September of 2019.
So probably one of the last shows I played.
It was an evening of music and talk where he had a big piano play.
I think he played Into My Arms.
I feel like he might have even...
He either opened this or The Ship Song.
Right, which is another one yeah
which is a great one and that would sort of field questions from the crowd he'd give advice to
people um and i don't know like having seen the bad seats a few times over the years it was sort
of a it was kind of cool to see like a different type of nick cave experience and you know
convocation all is pretty small i mean it's not you know it's not basement but but into more
intimate obviously yeah so there was that and then i think i had tickets to two shows that were
gonna be last year that got wiped off one was a stormzy who's like a like uk hip-hop artist right
sort of another guy who's like massive in the uk and not really that popular but the other one was
uh einderstein naboudin with looks of bargel who used to be in the bad seeds not really that popular but the other one was uh Einderstein Nebauden with Bargiel who used to be in the Bad Seeds was sort of I think in the iteration of the Bad Seeds
that this song was on. Einster Zende Neubauden. Is it Nebauden? Wow. The only way I know how to
pronounce that is because we actually had a cart back in the CFNY days with someone actually
telling us how to pronounce it correctly you would plug it in and
then it would say it's einster's end they know about yeah which he was in absolutely well that
one that one i don't i'm not ashamed of botching it no it's that's a fair fair play for botching
that one but nick cave to me i i could just talk about him all day he's one of my favorite artists
of all time and he's just so talented and he writes a good sad song and a
great love song and he and he did uh on that song i thought into my arms okay a few things here one
is uh ian service wants me to say to you brother bill rifflandia rifflandia does that mean anything
to you it's like really hazy, he says best fucking festival ever.
Riftlandia.
Does it mean anything to you?
And if it doesn't, that's cool.
I just promised I'd ask you about it.
He'd have to remind me.
I'll know it when he says it.
So Ian, write in a comment that'll jog a memory here.
One more, a couple of quick things here.
Shout out to Joku.
My eyesight's going bad.
Jokaru, I think that's what he calls himself
who says pandemic fridays aka thursday nights is uh like he said it's jokaru jokaru that's right
and uh who else did i want to say cousin yeah that's right yyz gourd just wants to say neil
is out allen in allen cross chance, but thank you.
Well, Neil was there, so I think that explains
that right there. We covered this last
week. Don't make me say it again.
And brother, I have a question before I kick out
the final jam from our very own Charles
Cameron Gordon. The question
I have is, okay,
I've started to like you very much,
and I know you're a radio
god of sorts.
And that radio keeps blowing up things, like in the sense that there's fewer radio jobs than ever.
There's like, there's, you know, the story of radio.
Like, like, have you ever thought about, I'm serious.
Have you ever thought about getting a gig that wasn't a radio gig?
Yeah, absolutely.
I was working out of radio for a while over the holidays.
I took a job working for the government.
Um, as we were talking about earlier with, with Cam and yourself, I was working for the
liquor store over the holidays.
Uh, and I was quite ready to pivot my career from broadcaster to liquor store employee,
but it's a, it's, it's a big union job out here. And unless
they're hiring, you're not getting a gig. And so I can get seasonal work, but I can't get, um,
full time at this point, but, uh, I I'm a radio guy. That's, you know, that's, that's my passion.
That's what I, I, I know how to do. I haven't, I haven't worked a quote unquote real job since I
was 21 years old so you know
again this is why i feel for a lot of these people that are have been let go and they're in a very
similar scenario to myself except i wasn't let go with a way tidal wave of other people right
it's tough um well and i'm sorry i'm thinking of your, your former colleague, Rob Johnston, who basically decided to go into the postal service.
Right, which was an option for me as well, except he didn't hire me.
Yeah, Rob had to do that.
And then Rob, because I mean, it comes down to there are certain people that are just so goddamn talented, Mike, that they're going to get back into the industry.
And Rob Johnston is one of those people.
So, you know, he's back in there now at Chorus
working for the podcasting side of things.
And good on him.
Rob's a great guy and he deserves to be there
because the guy's a visionary when it comes to production.
And the thing I never knew,
I never knew that radio would turn into something
that was a job where you had to know how to do
everything. So now it's a job where you have to be able to produce. You have to be able to
content. What you do is exactly what a radio broadcaster has to do. Now it's not just
opening up the microphone, doing a little bit of prep and then talking it's right. It's social
media. It's, it's promotion media it's it's promotion it's marketing
you're doing everything yourself now how do you think i feel brother what's that i'm doing
everything over here too so i totally you are no i i'm credit to you for doing that and i'm learning
i've had to learn that i've had to pivot a little bit i have a couple of opportunities maybe coming down the road and we'll see what happens. But
until then, I
enjoy working with you guys.
It's a lot of fun for me.
I can pay you in lasagna, but
I've got to figure out how to ship that.
We're okay. By the way, the way to pronounce
the... I mentioned a name and I butchered
it. I think I said Joe Kuro. It's
Joe Kuro is how you say it.
His real name is Christian. And he wanted me to,
he's asking where Stu Stone is.
So just for those who didn't catch it.
I'm Stu Stone.
What are you talking about?
Yeah, Stu just changed his voice.
So Stu Stone is still, of course,
very much a part of Pandemic Fridays.
He got a gig that pays money
and it put him in the USA
and he's going all over the States
interviewing people.
I think he said it was on the public record.
He said it was for Vice, I believe.
I think I'm allowed to say that.
That's cool. Good for him.
And there's a wrestling angle.
Has he said this yet?
I feel like he did.
Yeah, I think he has.
I think I've heard that.
Thank you.
Thank you for bailing me out
because then I'll have to do another apology next week.
But bottom line is he's busy
and we have Brother Bill filling in for Stu
until Stu can get back to it.
Stu will be back. I am merely just a figment of your imagination.
Right. Anything to say, Mr. Gordon,
before your final jam? Okay, Mike, let's get dramatic with this, and I'll
keep this quick. We've heard some great songs today.
I've picked a bunch of songs I really like. Some of my favorite artists have
been kicked out, everyone from R.E and uh the jam and whatnot um you know we talked about the love of
another a partner we've talked about the love of a cat with luna um i i love what brother bill said
just loving of home and loving of a place that we heard with English Rose. Brampton. I sort of touched on off the top,
perhaps the ultimate type of love.
You know what that is?
It's self-love.
Hit the music, Mike. I love myself.
I want you to love me. When I feel down, I want you to love me
When I feel down, I want you above me
I search myself, I want you to find me
I forget myself, I want you to remind me
I don't want anybody else
When I think about you, I touch myself.
Oh, I don't want anybody else.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Okay, the Divinals.
Second song in a row.
Another Australian artist.
I touch myself.
I did not know the divinals were
australian there you go you're gonna learn a lot about the divinals right now uh from 1990
big hit uh i remember i was about 13 when this came out one of those comes in the car when my
parents are like driving me around york. What in car in car? What?
Just like one of those like awkward moments. Just hearing this one,
when parents were,
um,
I always loved this song.
Like one of those,
I,
I don't know if you'd call this a novelty song.
Certainly.
Sort of a wonder for sure.
Yeah.
I don't,
I don't think this is a novelty song.
No,
no.
Uh,
this song went to number four in the US, number 13 in Canada,
number one in their
home, Australia.
We're going to have a bit of a mind blow
at the end of this. We'll get back to Australia.
A bit of background on this band.
They actually, they've been
a band for about 10 years when this song
had formed. First got together
in 1980. This is kind of
interesting. They were actually the first band
to play at the U.S. Festival.
Do you remember that?
That was the one that Steve... Us Festival.
I call it the U.S.
Borge
Salmin. That's the man's name.
It was
them and Triumph.
I think Triumph was on there.
Some little can-con.
They were Canadian, right?
Triumph?
Yeah, definitely.
Gilmore is a buddy of Humble Howard,
a golfing buddy of Humble Howard.
Sorry.
So yeah, the ESS Festival,
this was the big festival thrown by Steve Wozniak,
one of the co-founders of Apple,
or I guess the co-founder.
So Divinals opened the new Wave
Day, which in order was the
Divinals' first band.
They had a little NXS. Again,
a lot of Australia.
I think that was like the first
Us Festival, maybe. Or, no, the Ramones
might have been on like the David Bowie day.
Oh, okay. Yeah, somehow they weren't on this.
There were some good bands on that bill. There were some really good
alt-rock bands. Yeah, so we got NXS, Wall of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo,
The English Beat, Stray Cats, Flock of Seagulls,
and then Headliners was The Clash.
Yeah.
And then the other three days,
you had Van Halen, David Bowie, and Willie Nelson, Headliner.
There was sort of that metal day, and then the rock day,
and then the country day.
The Clash were like the new wave day.
Wow. Can I just say this? If you're looking to go down a rabbit hole with YouTube, day and then the rock day and then the country day the clash were like the new wave day wow can i can
i just say this if you ever go to if you're looking to go down a rabbit hole with youtube
check out some of the footage of the us festival and look at the crowd it's it's it's definitely
a a moment in time for not only music but fashion as well and hair it's pretty crazy and it was a
like it was it near like pasadena
or something was somewhere in california like really dusty i just started like seeing footage
and a lot of dust and uh i started seeing footage of this festival i think it was what like a new
music like recap show of uh david lee roth sort of uh shooting on the clash how the clash i think
had been like very vocal but the money
involved in david lee roth was kind of chewing a strip off joe strummer and there was actually
from what i understand a fight between the crew for the clash and the crew for van halen i don't
know how that worked out why it happened but something to do about it was something that
that joe strummer said on stage about cash or something, yeah.
Okay, yeah, because this was the first day,
the new wave day,
and then Van Halen came up the next day.
The only other song that the Divinals had
that charted in North America
was something called Pleasure and Pain
that came out in 1985.
That only went to number 76.
So, I mean, totally a one-hit wonder.
In North America, but in their native Australia,
they had more than two dozen charting singles.
So, a really big deal.
So, they are to the Australia as the tragically hip is to Canada.
No.
I think they're the creepiest.
That's one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard.
And usually, it's a guy singing a creepy song.
But that song is just like...
It just just sticked to me when I used to play
that song I'd be like ooh
was this on CFNY
was this an alternative
I don't know
I thought it was
too poppy depends on what
era I guess we're talking about I remember CFDR
was like all over this I think we played
it I think we did I'm
thinking more the last radio station I worked at we played it. I think we did. I'm thinking more the last radio station
I worked at,
we played it
and I just thought,
this is a creepy tune, man.
So,
Cambrio.
It's a love song.
Cambrio.
It's a love song.
It definitely is a self-love
and that's important.
I think we're,
you know,
it's important.
Why our Stu Stone,
rather,
didn't pick this
is beyond me at this point.
After that story.
Yeah, right.
Cambrio says, has shown a picture in this chat. He that story. Cam, yeah, right. Cam Brio says,
has shown a picture in this chat.
He's got a picture of the lead singer of the Divinals.
What's her name,
by the way?
Do we have a name?
Yeah.
No,
her name is Chrissy Amflet.
And I don't know if this is generally known.
She actually passed away in 2013.
You know what?
I remember this.
Yeah,
because I do remember that.
And that's sad because I'm going to,
I was going to point something out which now
won't make any sense.
She's actually Lieve Fumpke. Lieve Fumpke
is the lead singer of the Divinals. You can see
a photo in the chat.
Lieve Fumpke has left the chat.
Kind of has that look, yeah.
She was older too.
I want to say when that
Divinals song was big, you said
1990, Cam? Yeah.
I think she was already well into her 30s and
maybe close to 40 when that song yeah like i didn't jot it down here but i feel like she was
like breast cancer i think i'm trying to remember i remember when this went it says breast cancer
and complications from multiple sclerosis that's awful um so in response about a year later and
this is could be i it's almost poor taste to call this a
mind blow but about a year after she passed away a bunch of famous australian female artists got
together to record a charity version of this song um a bunch of names honestly i didn't recognize
any of them aside from olivia nude and john where they did a tribute um to the divinals and self-love, but more importantly, to raise
money for cancer. Mike, maybe we could hear a little bit of this rendition of this.
I love myself. I want you to love me. When I feel down, I want you above love me When I feel down
I want you above me
I search myself
I want you to find me
I forget myself
I want you to remind me
I don't want anybody else
When I think about you I touch myself very touching when you hear that
story and what yeah for sure yeah yeah the video for this song is actually kind of cool because
again i i don't really recognize a lot of the names i i saw olivia newton john what about natalie
and bruglia did she make that no she wasn't no no what about literally nobody like kylie minogue
was not in there.
What was the lead singer of the band?
Do you remember the band Frente?
Of course. They had some minor hits.
Bizarre Love Triangle.
I think the singer, the first line of that song may have been her.
I'm not sure, though.
Okay.
And I don't know her name.
Yeah, it was sort of a mixture of older ladies and young artists.
Again, this version of the song is about six years old.
I'm still getting my bowls
busted because of my coming out of their
shells pick, which I still think is one of the
great selections in Pandemic Friday
history. That is all.
Please continue. It's a great
song, Mike. I mean, regardless of whether it was
a fit or not.
Mike, I played Passenger today. Don't worry
about it.
Okay, so Brother Bill sounds like not a fan of this song.
Mike, what say you?
It's fine. It kind of reminds me, I remember
Touch Me, I Feel You,
Who is that? Suzy Q or something?
Was that Samantha Fox?
Yeah, maybe that was Samantha Fox.
It was like in the mid-80s maybe.
But it's fine.
I don't know what it is. And I always love
the intro to this song. It's just like I don't know. I love that swelling guitar. I don't know what it is and I always love the intro to this song it's just like
I don't know I love that swelling guitar
I don't know regardless of the lyrics
quote unquote
now you're going to do it like an Uncle Vince
I think of that one
the guitarist was really my boyfriend
anyway Divinals
I touch myself
you know self love
what better love is there so it's my turn here
to close out the show with what i deem the the greatest love song in alt-rock history are you
ready oh I'm straight, I'm not
Oh, say, say, say
Oh, say, say, say
Oh, say, say, say
Oh, say, say, say
Oh, say, say, say
Wait, they don't love you like I love you
Wait, they don't love you like I love you Wait They don't love you like I love you
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah
That's right
They don't love you like I love you
And this song still fucking rocks.
Even hearing it now in the can, still amazing.
Okay, so this, of course, is Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Even hearing it now in the can, still amazing. Okay, so this, of course, is Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
And that's Kierno you're hearing there.
And she wrote this song about her boyfriend, Angus Andrew.
He was lead singer of the band Liars.
And it's a love song that she wrote for him, I guess,
because he left her to accept a job offer,
and she missed him immensely.
And a fucking great song anyway,
but in the spirit of this holiday
and this love that Don Draper invented to sell nylons,
I would say you're not going to do any better
than this kick-ass jam right here
what let's say you i like this song and rem the one i love is brookends because again i think both
are like very very at their root simple songs you know like kind of you know sort of the lyrics you
know not a lot of words sort of you know kind of the instrumentation is pretty straight up but
just yeah i love this song i love both those songs but i think this is a fine choice mike
i didn't know it was uh i didn't know the song but i knew right away it was carolyn from yeah
yeah she just has that very very distinctive voice um yeah i think it's i'm with cam i think
it's a great pick and the bookends work really nicely and and it's a great pick, and the bookends work really nicely,
and it's a great selection.
I don't know too much about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs other than the New York City. Oh, catch up.
What's that book, Cam, about the New York scene?
Meet Me in the Bathroom.
Yes, honestly.
Brother Bill, you got homework, brother.
You got to do this.
I feel like you and Mark Teo just talked about that a little bit.
Yeah.
Is it a book?
Yeah. Yeah, it it a book? Yeah.
Yeah.
It's called Meet Me in the Bathroom.
The author is Lizzie something or other.
Okay, I'll look it up.
Yeah, it's kind of like New York.
Kind of the whole history of the Strokes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, cool.
CD sound system, like all the New York stuff.
Let's ride out this jam.
There's only about 20 seconds left.
Let's ride it out into my mind blow.
We close things up here.
Oh, is it?
What's that?
Okay.
So here we go. Oh, they don't love you like I love you Slow down, they don't love you like I love you
Back up, they don't love you like I love you Step down, they don't love you like I love you
Can't you see there's no other man above you? What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you
Hold up, they don't love you like I love you Hold down, they don't love you like I love you Oh don't, they don't love you like I love you
Something don't feel right
I warned you we'd hear a little Beyonce
before I shut things down here.
This is of course from my favorite Beyonce album, Lemonade.
This is Hold Up,
which she gave writing credit to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
because that song is embedded in Hold Up.
You can hear it there.
It's a little like, I guess you call that interpolation, I suppose?
I could hear Can't Stand Losing You in there as well.
Can't Stand Losing You.
The English beat covered it.
I can't remember.
Oh, maybe. Maybe that was sampled. Maybe you're right. Can't Stand Losing You. The English beat covered it. I can't remember. The whole... Oh, maybe that was sampled. Maybe you're right.
Can't Stand Losing You.
I thought I heard a bit of Stu Stone's Airhorn.
So did I. Yes, honestly.
For sure, Stu Stone's Airhorn.
The ghost of Stu Stone.
But there's, yeah, this Hold Up by Beyonce.
And actually, the funny thing is, because I like Lemonade so much,
this song, Hold Up, which, of course, reminds me of Maps, which I already love, is now just that's my go-to Beyonce.
If we have to play some Beyonce, it's going to be Hold Up.
I remember I saw, I was lucky enough to have seen Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
I don't think it was this album.
I think it was the next one.
But when they played this song, like, again, that riff is just like,
I forget the guitarist's name, but just, like, playing that almost pretty much straight
for, like, three and a half minutes.
And then those sort of, like, pounding drums again.
Like, it's almost like a very, almost like a primal song.
Yeah, I don't know.
I'm going to have to go back and listen to that.
Hey, somebody showed up in the Zoom room to say goodbye.
So we'll let this person in.
And it's not Stu, don't get excited,
because I would think, oh, it's Stu Stone.
But your lunch bag let down is it's Ian Service.
Oh, there you go.
So hey, just to let you know,
Can't Get Used to Losing You was done by Andy Williams in 1963.
Wow.
Originally.
But it was covered by the English beat as well.
And I swear that the main sample in that song is Can't Get Used to Losing You.
I could be wrong, but I think so.
So Ian, how was the show today? Did you catch any of it?
Yeah, I've been in and out all evening. It's fantastic.
Okay, is it as good as the Britpop episode or was this a Valentine's Day letdown?
I actually haven't listened to the entire brit pop episode because it was running a simultaneous
stream at the exact same time as yours and we peaked at over 400 simultaneous viewers last week

the specifics there okay it's complicated okay dude so you like a scam drywall
