Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, it's Bookie and welcome to something we hope our friend Martin Streak would like. A show that is about the music he loved and the people that mattered. Over the next three hours, not only will we listen to some incredible music, but we'll also hear from you, the Edge listener, as well as some of Martin's friends and colleagues. It's been almost two weeks since we learned of Martin's passing, and while there's been a lot of questions and emotions since then, tonight is about the music and what Martin brought to the Edge listener,
Starting point is 00:00:24 through the video roadshows back in the 80s and the nightclubs and Thursday 30s in the 90s and into the new millennium. Now it would be impossible to cover everyone's thoughts and memories in the three hours we have not to mention all the music he loved but we'll do our best to pay tribute to our friend Martin and as Marty would say we're gonna go non-stop full tilt for 180 minutes and along the way, here's some Niervanski, musical perfection from Nine Inch Nails, and more. Let's get it started.
Starting point is 00:00:50 A track that Martin would start each and every roadshow with back in the day. The Cult and She Sells Sanctuary. It's a tribute to our beloved Martin Streak. For Toronto, he kept everybody's ear to the ground. He kept us informed in tune. And you always expected plenty of insight and plenty of cool music with Martin. It's a shame that he passed. And we hope that his spirit lives on through the edge. Let me take you on a trip Around the world and back And you won't have to move, you just sit still Now let your mind do the walking Let my body do the talking
Starting point is 00:06:00 Let me show you the world in my eyes I took you to the highest mountain To the depths of the deepest sea Everyone need a map, believe me Now let my body do the moving I let my hands do the soothing Let me show you the world in my eyes No, it's all there is Nothing more than you can feel now, that's all there is Let me put you on a ship On a long, long trip Your lips close to my lips All the islands in the ocean All the heavens in motion Let me show you the world in my eyes That's all there is

Starting point is 00:09:19 on board at The Edge, one of the first people I befriended very quickly was Martin Streak. I'll never forget I came down to 228 with Neil Morrison. You might know him as brother Bill and I came into the studio. He stuck out his hand. He shook my hand. He knew exactly who I was and what band I was in and he knew I wanted to come on boarding. He offered his assistance. He said if you need anything at all, you know pick my brain. You know see how things work around here. Let's have lunch. Let's catch up. Let's play pool, you know, anything, let me know. And I was so blown away on how friendly the guy was. And over the years we became very, very fast friends and good friends and he'll be in my thoughts every single day, every single day. I miss
Starting point is 00:09:59 him dearly and I think the world has lost a radio gem. So thanks for listening and enjoy the music and thanks for listening to The Edge. And I said, I want to make it. I want to make it with you. Sometimes I say it's different. But mostly it's the same.
Starting point is 00:18:03 The same, the same, the same These mysteries of love That just ain't my thing Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh If I told you I knew about the sun and the moon I'd be your true love Oh oh oh oh oh The only thing I never showed you
Starting point is 00:18:33 Is what I won't do Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh Oh no, I wanna make it with you I wanna make it with you Anytime, anywhere, and I said I wanna make it with you I wanna make it with you Hey, hey, yeah I wanna make it, no I wanna make it with you Oh, oh, oh, no
Starting point is 00:19:15 I wanna make it I wanna make it with you Hey, hey, yeah With you Hey Oh Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh with you Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, no I wanna make it now, I wanna make it with you Yo, yo, hey, hey, hey, yo Canna-na-canna-na-canna-na-canna-na-can My name is Ivor Hamilton. I'm an Edge alumni member who walked the halls right out of high school as an intern in 1977
Starting point is 00:20:57 and began my career full-time at CFNY in 1979 and stayed through the end of 1988. Martin Streak and I became fast friends through his brother Rob and like myself Martin was always a passionate music person which got him through the door at 102 and onto the roadshow in 1984. We worked hard and had many good times in those days playing high schools, universities and private functions all over Ontario, sometimes into the US and into Quebec. It was a great way to promote the radio station and meet listeners face to face. We made many new friends through this and to this day, I still see emails from people
Starting point is 00:21:32 thanking them for bringing the great new music to parts of the province who never got much of anything and shaping their musical taste for life. With the events that unfolded and his untimely death, two things stood out and both of these come from listeners of Edge 102. First, I received a Facebook notice this past week from a Diane Wood-Riberty, a woman who I have never met nor spoken to, who has very much wanted to bring something to my attention. It turned out it was an email exchange she was having with Martin the last week before he left the station, asking for requests from the 80s, and for some reason my name came up in the conversation, and she asked him if he knew me.
Starting point is 00:22:08 His response was, he considered he and I to be brothers. The second note that I received was from former music publicist Kevin Shea, who is now a hockey historian and also does PR for the Princess Margaret Hospital. He recently posted a story that spoke to Martin's unfinished business in his drive to reach the goal in the ride for cancer. Oftentimes when a person dies people look to make a donation to a charity in the deceased person's name stated one post. What better cause to donate to than one Martin had recently selected himself? Better one that showed he had a goal yet to be achieved. Very quickly words
Starting point is 00:22:45 spread. In fact, the viral community reacted with the speed of light. Ten dollars here, fifty dollars there. A few even donated a hundred and two dollars and ten cents to reflect the radio station which they had listened to him. As the numbers grew, 47% soon became 65%, then 80% and within days the total had surpassed a hundred percent%. It just shows that we can make a difference in our lifetime. If everyone is as giving as the people on these pages wrote a friend. It is indeed a beautiful way to honor Martin. I think he would be proud that his friends and fans cared so much for him. Helping
Starting point is 00:23:18 others. What an extraordinary legacy for Martin Street to leave behind. I'm a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a- Always work His head is not his memory He is common one, two, three Trickle up, trickle down We really become unwell Sensoria, sensoria Sensoria In hard times, hard thrills Reach for the tubes and pills Drag them to pull you in

Respect. Always work. Build a church. Do right. Respect those with far goals. It's a tribute to Martin Streak. It's the music he loved and a few stories to go along. Hi, my name's Debbie and I'm calling from Orangeville and I'm just calling to say that Martin Streak was an amazing man, an awesome DJ.
Starting point is 00:31:18 He was there for me through years of partying even though he might not have ever known it. He helped bring me some of the greatest nights of my life down at the Phoenix on Edge 102 Saturday night and it brought tears to my eyes knowing that he's no longer with us and I only wish that he would have known how much the city of Toronto and just the greater Toronto area really did love him as a DJ and as a person. He just brought us all so much joy with the music that he's done each night and he will be greatly missed. I thought that you knew it all Well you've seen it ten times before With both your feet on the ground
Starting point is 00:32:47 I love slow, slow but deep Pain, depression, wash over me Dream on my dear, And renounce temporal obligation Dream of my dear It's a sleep from which you may not awaken You build me up then you knock me down You play the fool while I play the clown We keep time to the beat of an old slave drum You raise my hopes then you raise the odds You tell me that I dream too much
Starting point is 00:34:18 Now I'm serving time in disillusionment I don't believe you anymore I don't believe you I don't believe you anymore I don't believe you I thought that I knew it all I'd seen all the signs before I thought that you were the one In darkness my heart was won You filled me up and you knocked me down You played a fool while I played the time
Starting point is 00:35:17 We keep time for the beat of an old sleigh drum You raised my hopes and you raise the odds You tell me that I dream too much now I'm I don't believe you anymore I don't believe you So Never let it be said, I wasn't true I never found a home inside of you I'll give you all my time I'll give you all my time Hi, I'm Josie Dye. About nine years ago, I was new to the Edge. And as you can imagine, this place can be just a little bit intimidating for a small girl from Pickering. I had Edge listeners telling me that I wasn't edgy enough. I had to work with all men, which was the first for me.
Starting point is 00:37:44 I honestly thought it was like the first day of high school all over again. That was until I met Martin Streak. He stands at just above 6 feet tall, tattoos everywhere, loud in your face and definitely intimidating at first glance. Martin talked to me for about 40 minutes my first day here. Then after my shift, he and the DJ picked me up from the Edge Studios and drove me to a pool hall to meet all his friends and fellow announcers. He made it okay for the rest of the Edge community to accept me. And this sounds stupid when I talk about him now, but back then I was sincerely grateful. Martin had these mannerisms
Starting point is 00:38:19 that none of us will ever forget. He makes it okay to be included. He basically included the board opt to the intern to the head of the company. He talked to everybody. Martin also had a star power about him and that's why he lasted in the clubs for over 15 years. Very few people have that ability. You know, I've only met two people in my life that when I look at them, I'm completely drawn to them.
Starting point is 00:38:42 One of them will be Tommy Lee and the other Martin Streak. We'll miss you. I left your house this morning About a quarter of the night Could have been the Willie Nelson Could have been the wine When I left your house this morning Was a little lout tonight It was in Bapkajan I saw the constellations Reveal themselves one star at a time
Starting point is 00:40:12 I drove back to town this morning With as I'm pulling down the bind Yeah, the sky was dull and hypothetical And falling one cloud at a time That night in Toronto With its checkerboard floors Riding on horseback And keeping order is starved Tell the man they couldn't hang Step to the mic and sing
Starting point is 00:41:02 And their voices rang with the Arian twang. I got to your house this morning Just a little after nine In the middle of that riot Couldn't get you off my mind So I'm at your house this morning Just a little after nine in the eastern middle of the night cause it was in Bob Cajun where I saw the constellations reveal themselves one star at a time I'm going to be a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:42:28 little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:42:36 little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:42:44 little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:42:52 little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Starting point is 00:43:00 little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a I'm going to go Martin's street, listening to his radio show every Thursday and seeing what the club's on the weekends. I don't think anybody else will match his voice or even come close to what he can do on the radio.
Starting point is 00:43:49 I mean, he was just full of energy. Really sad to see the guy go, and I'm gonna miss him. And condolences to his friends and family. Toronto lost a hell of a guy. Well well, it was I guess February 1985. I was in for an interview with then music director Ivor Hamilton.
Starting point is 00:48:58 Ivor had been to Humber as a guest speaker and asked our class if anyone wanted to work in the music department with him. I thought I'd won a million bucks. The day of our interview I was blind with nerves. Iver set me at ease immediately. About two minutes into my interview Inwok's this loud, strong, determined force with long, thick, black, curly hair. His piercing eyes look right at me. Hey, I'm Martin. How are you? I said who I was and he clipped back.
Starting point is 00:49:28 So you want to work here? I said more than anything. I could see the smirk in Ivers' face. I was just a terrified college student, so I wasn't going to blow my chance. And without taking his eyes off me, Martin says, So you know your music? I said, I think so. He said, OK. What label is Killing Joke on? My lucky day, I had just scraped together $20 to buy the import album at the Record Peddler.
Starting point is 00:49:52 I said, I think the import label is EG. Streak looked at me and said nothing, paused for what felt like an hour and said, yeah, OK, you can work here. And walked out. That began a 24- year relationship with a guy who was passionate, a consummate host, a giving person. Someone who always made you feel he was truly listening to you, cared about you,
Starting point is 00:50:16 and most of all, made you laugh your ass off. Martin's streak was hilarious. Whenever you're at Martin's place, he was in his element, always making you feel welcome. He had an amazing knack of keeping the conversation going, and it was rarely about him. His passions were true and deep. He had impeccable taste.
Starting point is 00:50:35 He was kind, and he loved his friends and family without conditions. If you were ever at one of his live-to-wear broadcasts or dropped by 228 Young, he welcomed you without hesitation and suddenly he made you feel a part of his world. And if you ever had the privilege of getting into a screaming match over music, count yourself lucky he stood by the music he supported.
Starting point is 00:51:00 Martin C. Streak, we miss you. We remember you. We wish you were here. Rest well, my friend. You have had all the money you can too, but that wasn't enough. You became a thrillseeker. Thrillseeker. Thrillseeker. Thrillseeker. Thrillseeker.
Starting point is 00:51:57 Kill for us, Rick. This thrillseeking became the one great thing in your life, piling one thrill on another until the murder. The kill of the love of killing, the kill for a thrill. A thrill seeker comes from all walks of life, comes from the home, the home where the parents are too busy to trade their children. Prepare us, Zara, you busy? Pray that you'll respect Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Skunk sucking depravity debauched Ain't no f***ing fest, real Olympics

Starting point is 00:55:20 Yeah! Humanity is always rooted in adult delinquency. Something is going wrong with the environment. Adults create the world, children live in it. Humanoid delinquency is always rooted in adult delinquency. And in this process, parents play the key role. When children grow up among adults, they're used to recognize anything that is fine and good or worthy of respect Yeah! Yeah! So what is your problem? To learn to live with, destroy us or make our sense? We don't care, it's not our fault
Starting point is 00:56:39 That we were born too late Screaming headache on the proudest date Killing time is appropriate To make a mess And f*** all the rest We say We say So what?

Martin Streak was my favorite DJ and I always remember him playing Pool of the Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:59:21 I played against him one time and he thoroughly destroyed me. He bought me a beer anyway. He made me like to class and tool and so many other bands I don't even remember. And I'll miss Jerry and his life on the radio. Thanks for the music. Starting point is 01:04:33 Solidness all over me, hoping I can clear the way by Stepping through my shadow, coming out the other side Stepping through the shadow 46 in 2 just ahead of me Hey there, this is Jason Barr from the Dean Blundell Show. And I've worked here at the Edge or CFNY for about 15 years or so, so I've known Martin Streak a long time. But one of the things that sticks out in my mind about Martin, I was just a young buck and it was a Thursday night in probably 1994, but Martin would do the Thursday 30 and he always have a co-host and his co-host this time was Pete Fowler and we
Starting point is 01:05:55 had a remote studio down at Bloor and Bathurst and I was in the main studio at in Brampton on 83 Kennedy Road South. I would have to play the songs and Martin and Pete would do the countdown. So there was a Nine Inch Nails show coming up and Martin, he really, really wanted to go to the show because anybody who knows Martin knows that he loves Nine Inch Nails. Well, it turns out he had work and he couldn't go to the show and this really made him upset. And so I'm sitting there and I can hear Martin and Pete talking to each other through the talkback system before they go on the air. Martin says to Pete, I got something to say.
Starting point is 01:06:37 And Pete says, what is it? He goes, just go with it. So they go on the air and Martin starts talking about the countdown. I don't remember what song. It might have been a Nine Inch Nails song. And he starts going off about how he can't go to the Nine Inch Nails show and he's really mad. And then it gets silent for a second.
Starting point is 01:06:54 You can hear him push his chair back and I'm going to try and replicate, so you're going to have to bleep this. I'm going to try and replicate the exact moment. Martin leans back in his chair and he yells, F***! Just like that. And there's silence for a few seconds because I'm kind of stunned myself. And Pete Fowler comes back and says, And you want me to go with that.
Starting point is 01:07:26 And then we went to commercials and we hoped no one from management heard about it, but they did. And not long after that, we got a letter posted in our little dirty kitchen there from our program director Stuart Myers explaining why we don't use the word on the air and that is a lesson I will never forget so I just have to say thank you to Martin for that thanks buddy Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be? Am I not seething with this animosity? I think you owe me a great big apology Terrible lie!
Starting point is 01:08:25 Terrible lie! Terrible lie! Eventually
Starting point is 01:18:06 the tape ran out and I used that as an opportunity to give him an out, you know, to stop the conversation and to send me on my way. Instead he looked at me and said, what, can't you flip the tape over? I was shocked. I didn't argue. I flipped the tape over and we continued the conversation until the other side of the tape ran out. And that was Martin. I didn't argue. I flipped the tape over and we continued the conversation until the other side of the tape ran out. And that was Martin. Once you got him started, he was unstoppable. Miss you. Love you. I came in there, I gave him my CD. He listened to it and I knew he would appreciate it because we like the same kind of musical taste and you know he got back to me the next week and I asked him can you put it on the air? He said it was great and I got a phone phone call, and he gave me my five minutes of fame at the Kingdom,
Starting point is 01:23:49 and for that I'm forever in debt to Martin Street. I will miss him, his great musical taste. There is no other Martin Street. Martin and I actually came to the station roughly about the same time. We came with our big hair and even bigger passion for music. Now, fortunately, we both lost the big crazy hairdos, but not the passion.
Starting point is 01:29:58 We spent a lot of years working together on the CFNY video road show, Edge Fest, numerous Lollapaloozas, hours together in the studios, but I must say it's kind of weird and I'll tell you why. I was asked to maybe share a story and there should be tons of them, but no particular one comes to mind. Instead I'm getting these great snapshot memories like sharing moments, hearing an awesome van together, just joking and goofing around and lots of laughter. I'm remembering Martin's charm, his super positive energy as he bounced into our street level studios and his genuine kindness. I have these
Starting point is 01:30:31 wonderful images and feelings and that is what I will always carry with me of Martin Streak. So So So So So Hi, I'm Fred Patterson, a CFNY slash Edge employee from 1979 to 2001, part of the Humble and Fred Show, you might remember. My association with Martin Streak was a little bit different than most of the people at the Edge. Although I met him the first time he walked into CFNY, I can honestly say we never hung out in the
Starting point is 01:40:21 classic Marty way. I'm eight years older than Marty, and I became a father in my mid-20s, so other than seeing Marty in the halls of CFNY, or playing baseball and road hockey with Marty, or attending radio station functions or road trips with Marty, we really didn't hang out in the classic Martin Streak way. What is the classic Martin Streak way, you ask?
Starting point is 01:40:44 It would be in the nightclubs he worked or the infamous parties or get-togethers he'd hold at his condo. You see, I never got to go to those things because I was the old married guy who had to get up at 3 30 in the morning to do a morning show. Not that I would have been invited anyway because I was looked upon more as an older brother than a buddy per se. So to be honest, I really don't have a Marty story that would do this show justice. But believe me, I've heard some Marty stories and several of them involve a big jacuzzi tub
Starting point is 01:41:17 that he had in his condo. Apparently a lot went on in that tub involving more than two people at a time. The type of stuff that someone like me could only dream of, and believe me, I dreamt. I dreamt of being single. I dreamt of being good looking. I dreamt of being just like Marty.
Starting point is 01:41:35 Of course, none of that was possible, so I settled for something much more realistic. I dreamt of being Marty's bathwater. Cause every little thing gonna be alright Singing don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing gonna be alright Rise up this morning, smile with the rising sun Free livin birds, be by my doorstep Singin sweet songs, of melodies pure and true
Starting point is 01:42:41 Singin, this is my message to you, boo-boo Singing don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing is gonna be alright Singing don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing gonna be alright Rise up this morning, smile with the rising sun Three little birds, beach by my doorstep, singing sweet songs of melodies pure and true, saying, This is my message to you. Don't worry about a thing
Starting point is 01:43:47 Every little thing is gonna be alright Don't worry about a thing Every little thing is gonna be alright Every little thing gonna be alright Don't worry about a thing Every little thing gonna be alright Don't worry about a thing You're listening to a tribute to Martin Streak on 102.1, The Edge. Walk in silence, don't walk away in silence See the danger, always danger Endless talking, life rebuilding
Starting point is 01:45:36 Don't walk away The Oh, in silence, your confusion, my illusion War like a mask of self-hate Confronts and then dies, don't walk away away People like you find it easy, naked to see Walking on air Hunting by the rivers, through the streets, every corner Abandoned too soon, set down with too care You care, don't walk away And silence, don't walk away I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. I'm not sure if I wanted to take a second to share some of my memories of our beloved
Starting point is 01:48:48 friend Streak with you. Now, Marty and I worked together for years, and now the one thing I'll tell you, the man did not like sports. I would call him in with updates all the time, and he would just take them, write them down, and then I'd listen, but he'd never give them. That was one thing unique in this hockey-crazed city. Streak was always always always about the music but the one passion of pop culture we did share with star trek
Starting point is 01:49:08 and there was a great crossover we had a few years back where and there's an episode where clint howard ron's brother the little guy he plays a mysterious little character called bailout can and curtain down one of the guys from the enterprise bailey have to go over to investigate him and uh... it turns out that there are a lot alike in the share things and they sit down together and Balak says let's have a drink and the drink was called a Tronya well my brother who was also a Star Trek fan it took a like a beer bottle of Budweiser or whatever and it made a label put it on and called it Tronya so one day when Streak came in I had the bottle
Starting point is 01:49:42 of Tronya waiting for, and as he sat down to do the crossover, I said, Martin, before we do anything, let's have a sip of our favorite drink. We poured it, and as I said that day in the air, as I say to you now, Marty, wherever you are, where the rock and roll is playing, as Balak said, Martin, first we drink. Hold me a seat at the bar will you friend? I wanna talk about media distortion, and campaigns telling lies about abortion. Hey guys, if you don't have compulsion, get up and step to me right? You know Martin Streak was one of those guys that even though you didn't know him personally,
Starting point is 01:53:59 you always felt that you did know him from listening to him on the radio and going to the different clubs he played. In terms of a memory of Martin, well that's easy. About three years ago he was doing the Thursday 30 and after he played the song by the darkness, one way ticket to hell and back, he railed for about two or three minutes about how much it sucked and he lost about three to four minutes of his life and begged people not to vote for it so he'd never have to play it again. It was just classic Martin. Anyways, thanks for this opportunity and Martin, we'll miss you. So Falling off to almost the end Cool enough to not quite see it

Starting point is 01:58:54 Try to understand Where I can I will It's a tribute to Martin Streak. It's the music he loved and a few stories to go along. Greetings from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. My name is Neil Morrison. I was otherwise known as Brother Bill on the edge from 1990 until early 2004. Now if you're listening to this special, there's a
Starting point is 01:59:45 pretty good chance you may have known Martin Streak in one way or another. You may have been your best friend, you may have been your best friend on the radio. Martin and I worked together on the CFNY video roadshow when I started at the station in 1988. We went on air in and around the same time. This would have been late 1990, early 1991. The one thing we both shared was our love for music, specifically the Clash. When singer Joe Strummer dropped into the Edge Studios on Yonge Street a few months before his death, Joe Strummer's death, Martin was like a nervous kid in front of his rock hero, but as per the Martin
Starting point is 02:00:26 we all knew and loved, he walked past everyone, he confidently walked up to Joe Strummer, introduced himself, and made Joe feel more welcome at home than any of the rest of us Edgstavvers at the time could do. There are many stories, but I will always remember my friend Martin's thirst for new music and his passion for a band he called his favorite. And I call my favorite as well. For Martin, that band was The Clash. Why drive? I wanna ride, ride, ride, ride alone Black man, donna, donna, donna, donna Hey, don't mind what I bring White people, go to school

I'm calling from Buffalo, New York.
Starting point is 02:02:52 I just wanted to say that I remember back in the early 90s, 1991 to be exact, Martin would come down to Buffalo to a club called The Icon and do live to air. And we would not miss it ever. We miss you. You've magic drilled a ripped up concrete A baby waiting straight on howling The screeching breaks and lamp lights blinking Let's mutate in my, let's mutate in my A smash of glass and a rumble of boots An electric train and a ripped-out bumper Placed back to walls and a cry of a top cat

Starting point is 02:05:02 La la la la la la Love, love Waking up in badges and smoking cigarettes Cutting off the wets, man, it's now time to Hot summer's days, a sticky black tarmac Pretty ducks in a park, and we'll ship you a faraway That's entertainment That's entertainment Far away, let's entertain for a while, let's entertain for a while Two lovers kissing amongst the stream of midnight
Starting point is 02:05:34 Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude Getting a cab in, shvelling on buses Bring the graffiti of ass, let, see to face I say let's entertainment Let's entertainment Hey, what's going on? It's George Strombolopoulos here. Martin and I co-hosted the Thursday 30 together for a number of years on the edge, and it was actually one of the most fun times I've ever had in my career, because being on the radio with a guy who was as passionate
Starting point is 02:06:34 about music as Martin was was a dream come true. I always look at Martin like he was the defender of the Holy Grail. You know how the Holy Grail had those soldiers around it that protected it throughout eternity? If the Holy Grail you know the holy grail soldiers around it that protected it throughout eternity uh... if the holy grail quality music if holy grail are about the content authenticity martin is one of the very few soldiers left that was defending
Starting point is 02:06:57 particular thing and uh... and so the music world lost an incredible soldier uh... on top of the fact that we all of our friend uh... and and somebody lost their family member. I'll never forget the day when I first started at the Edge, I showed up at Whiskey Saigon. He was doing one of them Sunday night club gigs because Martin was synonymous with the good time in Toronto. If you needed to know where to go any point during the weekend in Toronto, you just find
Starting point is 02:07:19 out which club gig Martin was at and he went. So one Sunday I had just started at the Edge, I showed up and Martin was dressed like Jesus in that he had the long hair and he had the beard and he had kind of a loincloth on. And I remember thinking, is it Halloween? But it wasn't Halloween. What had happened was earlier that day, Martin was longboarding down the Don Valley Parkway and took a major wipeout and tore the skin off of a whole bunch of his body. But he still showed up to work that night and I looked at him and said, are you crazy? Like, what are you doing here, man? You should be, I don't know,
Starting point is 02:07:49 in a hospital or something wrapped up. And he said, now this is too much fun. Why would I want to miss this? And he also said he would be going crazy if he sat at home covered in blood. But Marn Street taught me very early in my life in this business, go to work. You make the gig no matter what happens.
Starting point is 02:08:04 And he had so much fun doing it that he wasn't going to let something like a colossal accident get in his way. So it's a long, rambly way of saying that the world is less fun without Marty. I'm not gonna lie, I'm gonna be a man Oh Come on out and do the test Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh All I do is never fail I love you so much it makes me sick Come on over, do the twist Beat me out of it Beat me out of it Beat me out of it Beat me out of it

Starting point is 02:12:27 I remember when Martin Streak was at the Velvet Underground for Halloween a couple years back and he was dressed up as the Twin Towers all lit up in LEDs. Starting point is 02:18:38 I first met Martin about a billion years ago when we were doing the old video road show. Since I was the new guy and since I was from a rural part of the prairies I ended up doing a lot of rural roadshows and Martin was the guy in charge of giving directions Something that wasn't always his strong suit I remember a gig in Dundas where Martin's route took me halfway to Kitchener before it doubled back and Then there was another show in Brantford, but the directions led to a street with the same name in Burlington. I was late for that one. But then I had my issues too. We did a show at a school in Shelburne and we were set up on the stage in the gym, but it was a very small stage. There wasn't much room to maneuver
Starting point is 02:19:19 out front. On my second appearance in front of the crowd, I didn't take that lip into account and I, I fell off the stage and I hit the floor about five feet below. Martin never did let me forget that one. Those roadshow nights hanging out with Martin and the crew were pretty cool. I won't forget those for a long, long time. One of many children Everybody had their own opinion
Starting point is 02:20:11 Everybody had their own opinion Holding it back hurts so bad Jump one out of my flesh and I'll slam Gasham Cash in now honey Cash in now Cash in now baby Cash you now honey? I was asked to say something about Martin and what hasn't been said or what can you say about someone who has obviously a tremendous legacy. I've known Martin to be incredibly unselfish. I've known Martin to be incredibly helpful. I've known Martin to be gracious. I've known Martin to be incredibly unselfish. I've known Martin to be incredibly helpful. I've known Martin to be gracious. I've known him to be spirited. I've known him to be happy. I've known him to be sad and all the things that and all the times that
Starting point is 02:23:56 I've had experiences with Martin, whether it be meeting about people we both genuinely don't like or whether it be meeting about things that we genuinely do like. I can tell you this, every emotion Martin ever displayed was honest and everything that Martin ever felt was honest. I wish more people were like Martin Streak. You meet fake people every day and that was one thing Martin would never be accused of is not being genuine. The best parts about Martin too
Starting point is 02:24:26 were how into stuff he was, especially Halloween. We had a Halloween costume contest every year here at the Edge. And Martin never, ever lost the contest. One year he went as 9-11. Hard to do, but he did it. One year he went to a company bowling function in assless chaps and a fetish leather mask and imagine him bending over to try and get a spare.
Starting point is 02:24:55 Another time he went as Hunter S. Thompson where he shaved the top of his head into that bald crown. He was into it, but that was Martin. Martin made us laugh. Martin made us feel something. Martin compelled us. And if there's one thing you could remember about Martin, that's there will never ever be another Martin. And you will never meet anybody that has anything bad to say about that man in the nine years that I've known him. So great memories for sure. And we will miss Mr. Martin's streak as he is no longer with us
Starting point is 02:25:25 We can still celebrate his memory as we're doing today I'm gonna be a man, I'm gonna be a man I can't distract legs, the spider man comes Softly through the shadow of the evening sun Stealing in past the windows of the blissfully dead Looking for the finty shimmering bed Searching out fear in the gathering gloom And suddenly, I'm over in the corner of the room And there is nothing I can do But I realize I'm frightened, and the spider man is having me for dinner tonight So quietly he laughs, shaking his head, it creeps closer now, closer to the close out of his head And softer than a shadow, I'm purr than flies
Starting point is 02:27:33 His arms are around me and he's turning my eyes I still can't be quiet now, my precious good boy Don't struggle like that I will only love you more But it's much too late to get away Turn on the light The spiderweb is having you for dinner tonight And I feel like I'm being eaten by a thousand lions and shivering furry holes
Starting point is 02:28:09 I'm late in the morning, but I wake up and the shiver you call And that's why the man is always hungry This heartache I'm coming to my bottom, once had the spark to fly But I've got no summer fear Hey, what's going on? My name is Adam from 102.1 The Edge, and we celebrate and remember Martin Streak tonight. And I think, well, first of all, I mean, Martin was one of my heroes. I mean, he worked at this radio station longer than I've been alive. And when I first started working here, he was the first on-air personality that I met, and I was really excited to meet him. And I'll never forget it.
Starting point is 02:29:42 He was sitting right about 20 feet away from where I'm recording this right now and he shook my hand and said hey kid you're gonna work here now and I said yes I am and he said all right if you need anything don't ask me because I don't know about and that was it and then he got up and walked away and then I was scared to death of Martin Streak for about a month but he and I he and I got along very well and we I saw him often and he was a really good guy, and I think my favorite memory of Martin is Don Letts came in who worked very closely with the clash and was in big audio dynamite and Martin was like a kid in a candy store. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life To see a man who has worked around new music and music his entire life
Starting point is 02:30:24 But to have one of his heroes come in and just absolutely melt and go back to being just a young, crazy music fan, it was very cool to see. Marty Streak is a great guy and we miss him dearly. But while we miss him, the music that he loves still lives on. I'm walking young and strong But just a little too thin I may be happy but I haven't a clue To this life In my mind Stay with me
Starting point is 02:31:26 We could learn to fight Like every good boy Should cling to me We are blacked out in visions Of giant soul and knives I'm a heroes again I never thought of before I remember the fashion but don't have a clue Fill your life In my heart and mind Stay with me
Starting point is 02:32:34 We could learn to fight Like every good boy should Clean to me We are blacked out in visions of giant tournament We'll go backwards, say nothing Our visions of China We're young and strong in this party We're building our visions of China We're false and quits saying nothing Our visions of China
Starting point is 02:33:40 We're young and strong in this party We're living our visions of China People backwards say nothing Of visions of China We're young and strong in this party We're building our visions of giant love I just want to talk about my experiences with Martin and we'd always liked him, myself and my friends and we'd gotten a club 102, where I'm at when I was younger but we had one time for martin's birthday um...
Starting point is 02:34:26 did that fall paper on the guest list though we bottom out when grexby uh... in canada bobblehead after they'd won for the olympics but obviously a fair amount of time ago and uh... i mean you never thought guy who is so appreciative i mean it was a bit of a joke yet but now i could the time and you know playing pool in the back there and we were just talking it up and he was always a really nice guy and he made everyone feel close to the music and he didn't talk about
Starting point is 02:34:51 every song being great, you know, he actually told you what he personally thought about the music as much as possible and I'd really appreciate that and it was actually very sad to hear that he was gone and yeah, we're gonna miss him and most my friends mentioned it as well so I think he was a lot bigger on the scene than even most people who thought he was big on the scene realized so Martin where we are thanks a lot for all the memories and thanks for all those great Thursday 30s when I was driving home from work So Oh, can't anybody see We've got a wall to fight No way, regardless of what they say How can it feel this wrong? From this moment, how can it feel this wrong?
Starting point is 02:36:53 Stone in the morning light I feel no more, can't say Frozen to myself I got nobody on my side Surely that ain't right Surely that ain't right Oh, can't anybody see? You've got to walk and find Never find our way We can't make a sound of what they say How can it feel this way?
Starting point is 02:38:20 From this moment How can it feel this way? On this moon, I've got a feeling it's falling How can it feel this moment? From this moment, how can it feel this moment? Oh, can't anybody see We've got a world to find Never find our way Regardless of what they say How can it feel this wrong? From this moment, how can it feel this wrong? Yeah, Mr. Martin, you know, he was always a clean inspiration to me. You know, I had a problem with drinking for a while there, and I always heard his voice on the radio, and he was always, you know, so positive about the whole thing.
Starting point is 02:40:23 And I met him in the club a couple times and you know he was such a solid looking guy and so together that I said hey you know if this guy can do it anyone can do it so you know I appreciate him for that and well for everything he's ever done but that's a big thing to me so we will be mismanaged. Everything you know you have to do For one, two, you're being just like sand Like a snake between two stones, entions in your bones Take a deep breath and swallow Your sorrow tomorrow It's your last cup of sorrow
Starting point is 02:41:52 What can you say If you change your taste It's your last cup of sorrow So take your face And get out of your way It won't end until you make the ends Until you know how to win the win With the new styles you might surprise yourself
Starting point is 02:42:52 Rock a snake between two stones, hit inches in your mouth Take a deep breath and swallow your sorrow tomorrow Reasoning up to the next composer's door To the people you hate the most It's your last cover sorrow One day you'll say Baby, this is your day It's your last cover sorrow You said, maybe this is your day Your last of the sorrow So make your bed
Starting point is 02:43:37 And get on your way You might surprise yourself You might surprise yourself You might surprise yourself You might surprise yourself You might surprise yourself You might just surprise yourself You might just surprise yourself You might just surprise yourself You might just surprise yourself
Starting point is 02:44:55 You might just surprise yourself My name is JD, I've been hosting Punk-O-Rama at the station for the last couple years. And when I started the station six years ago, Martin was one of the first people to reach out and be both accommodating and inspiring to me and other new young radio hopefuls at the station. And I'm sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of former employees that can attest to that. But he was always willing to discuss music new and old, and he could always make time for you. Another great thing about Martin is that you could always tell what music he was passionate about. A lot of the time on the Friday Night Live show, he would get to sneak in some of his favorite songs and some hidden gems on the show. And I remember a few months ago, I turned on the radio and heard an amazing live version of Monkey Gone to Heaven by the Pixies. And without a doubt, I knew that Martin had somehow snuck it on the air. I called him up immediately and we talked about the version of the song and where it was recorded and of course he arranged he managed to arrange a copy of
Starting point is 02:45:31 the station for me the next week it was one of those little things that made Martin the great person that he was and we didn't just lose an amazing talent but we lost an incredibly sweet spirit as well. I'm close and I'm sitting with a kiddie Now you know you're look pretty Like a lover, not a dancer Superboy, take a little chance I don't wanna I don't think so I don't wanna I don't think so
Starting point is 02:46:42 Cool, stay, let me play with your radio Move me, turn me on, baby, or I'll be your slave Give you a shit I don't wanna, I don't think so I don't wanna, I don't wanna I don't think so Yee Tell em' bout it Get away with her Hey cool thing, come here. Sit down beside me.
Starting point is 02:47:28 If there's something I gotta ask you. I just wanna know, what are you gonna do for me? I mean, are you gonna liberate us girls from male, white, corporate oppression? Tell it like it is. Huh? Yee. Don't be shy. Word up. Fear of it being our crime.
Starting point is 02:47:51 Fear of feeling black. Fear, baby. I just want you to know that we can still be friends. Let every friend know. Come on, come on. By no-one We will sing We will sing When you're a star
Starting point is 02:48:50 I know that you're a piece of everything Cool things sitting with a kill Now you know to show that you're great Rock the beat just a little faster Now I know you are the master I don't wanna I don't think so I don't wanna
Starting point is 02:49:16 I don't think so Cool thing, walkin' like a panther Come on and give me an answer Cool thing, walkin' like a panther Come on and give me an answer Cool thing, walkin' like a panther What'd he say? I don't wanna I don't think so I don't wanna
Starting point is 02:49:41 I don't think so I don't think so Hi, we first met Martin in 1986 at McMaster University. I was producing concert events there and Martin showed up. As did Ellen Cross, bringing a lot of sunshine to that campus. As we continued to produce concerts later on in the 90s away from the campus, Martin was always supportive of bands like Skinny Puppy coming to the Hamilton area and we were pleased with that. He always supported those types of shows and was always a friendly, cordial guy.
Starting point is 02:50:17 Sorry, Marty. Hope you're looking down with a big smile. Smile. One great story I have was a recent one. Came into the office one day and I was doing a project for my nephew. It was a Flat Stanley project and I needed someone, some people around the office to have a picture taken with Flat Stanley because I needed to send it back to him. So I come in and there's Martin sitting in the studio behind me and I said, Martin, Martin, I need you to help me out on this.
Starting point is 02:56:10 And without a hesitation, he's like, what do you need? What do you want? So I said, I need some pictures with Flat Stanley. So right from then on, he grabs the Flat Stanley, starts doing some great shots with him pointing out of laughing, having a great time. And those are some of the best pictures that I have in my pocket right now. Those pictures of Flat, Stanley, and Martin. So thanks Martin, thanks for making the great times great, thanks for making the bad times
