From torontomike.com and joining me this week to kick out the jams is Mike Majewski.
All right.
Welcome. How you doing, buddy?
I'm doing awesome. Super excited to be here.
You know, I just did a bike ride on the lakeshore because it's closed to vehicular traffic, which is awesome, by the way.
And it's such a sunny, nice, warm day.
And I was so jazzed.
But I've been informed by Environment Canada that we have a 30% chance of rain during this jam kicking.
So buckle up.
30%.
All right.
I like those odds.
I keep playing those odds.
So how are you keeping up?
Like, how are you holding up?
So you told me earlier that I'm the only one who calls you Mimico Mike.
I actually thought maybe I did, like, invent that,
but I couldn't remember anymore because you're, like, the Mimico man.
But you're not Mimico Mike except in my view.
Is that right?
No, I appreciate the nickname coming from you.
That's great.
I get lots.
I've been called many a things You know By friends and neighbours alike
But
Mimico Mike
It's been thrown out there
But
You know
It's
You're the first one
To kind of like
Really hone in on it
And put it out there
Repetitively
So thank you
Well I could throw a stone
From this backyard
And hit Mimico
Like that's how close
We are to Mimico
Yeah a lot of the time
People will come to me
About New Toronto
And they'll call it Mimico
And I'll say
Well actually It's New Toronto But, they're in the same beautiful pocket
of W6.
W6.
And W6, that includes Long Branch?
Yes.
Okay.
So we'll let them in.
I do notice that like everybody kind of knows Long Branch and they know Mimico, but New
Toronto, it's the most people are like, I didn't know there was a New Toronto.
Like we're kind of hiding out here.
Yeah.
Actually, New Toronto is the reason that I moved to Mimico in my 20s.
Tell me that story.
What did New Toronto do to you?
I got to hear this.
I used to be in construction.
I ran a kind of amateur construction company and project management and property management.
So managing residential units.
And I was at Home Depot and Ikea and I had some time to blow and
I'm like, I'm just going to go down to the lake from here. So I followed Islington all the way
down and I'd never been down here. I've been working Toronto for probably six, seven years
at the time, never, ever gone down to the water in this area of the city and kind of came down
and was like, holy SHIT, what's going on down here? This is a whole like secret community.
I think that's our story too.
Like I had lived in Toronto my whole life and I'd never been to the waterfront in this part of the city before.
Like I do it up near like maybe near Sunnyside or up Harborfront, of course, or Ontario place, but never here.
And then I think Monica and I were just, let's check out this hood.
And it was like like holy shit
uh this is like the jewel just here and right next door to new toronto of course is mimico
and ripping up the mimico real estate scene i guess i'm gonna ask you uh well firstly i want
to ask you because i tweeted a photo i bike mimico all the time so i see this van the the mike
majeski van and i tweeted a photo of it this morning and i just said this van, the Mike Majewski van, and I tweeted a photo of it this morning.
And I just said, this van will bring today's guest to kick out the jams.
Did you bring that van to the jam kicking here today?
I did.
I drove it in shamelessly down your street.
We should get a selfie in front of that.
What can you share about the van?
Like that van, you use it for, like, who can use the van?
Just like, what's the deal with the van?
Well, I'm friends with a lot of people in the neighborhood. So anyone that I'm on a first name basis with in the neighborhood could always call me and ask if they could borrow the van or
if I can pick something up for them. But you know, with every house, there's a little bit of work to
be done. Whether it's pristine, there's, you know, well, all your beautiful new furniture has boxes,
let's get rid of those boxes. But oftentimes there's stuff to go to charity.
There's stuff to go to the dump.
There's stuff to go to a cousin's house.
And so we're helping to facilitate that.
And I just found I was renting so many U-Haul vans.
Love U-Haul.
Great company.
Super accessible.
Just the extra time in Ubers to get there to pick it up.
And I just thought, I kind of have one of these guys and I don't really fit into many boxes.
And I kind of drool over vans.
So it was kind of a thing.
I said to my wife, I'd really like to buy a van for the business.
How would you feel about that?
And she, you and your vans.
I used to have a GMC van.
So we bought it and I deckled it up.
Here's this company, Southwood in Mississauga,
the best service ever.
And it's even deckled on top so you can see it from condos.
Yeah, Google Maps, you name it.
You got a jet pack, you can see my branding.
That helicopter went by.
I think it can read the top of the van.
So that's cool.
Now that I know this, because we bought this at Costco,
we bought this big, like it's a couch
and it's got this extension and we had to rent a U-Haul to get the couch here. But now that I know
you, I feel like I can pick up the phone and borrow the Mimico mic van. Yeah. Because we're
on a first name basis. You got it. Well, it's a great name. I love the name. I want to ask you
about the process of coming up with the 10 songs we're going to kick out today. I want to know,
like, was it easy? Was it hard? I want to know how you did it. But I also going to ask you the big
question, which I know the answer to this because you know where I live. But why would anybody want
to move to Mimico? Like, why Mimico? Start with that one? Yeah, let's start with that one. Okay.
You know, I'll go back to that story where I came down here randomly in my twenties. Um, and you know,
this is thrown around when you live in new Toronto,
long branch or Mimico people call it beaches West.
Right.
Uh,
but it wasn't,
it's not a name that people have come up with,
uh,
as a group decision.
The second I drove down here,
I said,
you just,
you relate things in life to other things you've seen in life.
So I just thought,
wow,
this is like the beaches,
but in the West end, this is incredible. Why haven't I heard of it? And then I started looking up real estate prices and I was like, this is less than half
price of the beaches, but in the West end. And I happen to be a West end boy. Right. So to me,
you have this incredible access to the lake, which is what makes the beaches so famous.
But when you're a West end dweller, like I am, I have access to the lake, which is what makes the beaches so famous. But when you're
a West End dweller, like I am, I have access to everything I love about the West End, which
involves all the business and people and friends and family that I have all the way to Dundas,
where I'm from in Hamilton. So Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, it's all right here.
And then the city is right there on the other side. So that's fantastic. The schools are
incredible. I got to give a shout
out to our principals and our schools and our parent community that goes around the schools
to make sure that they are inclusive, wonderful places for our kids to learn. We have parks in
abundance. We have incredible businesses. I was just at Ed's Real Scoop in Mimico, my good buddy
Mark, scooping some of the best ice cream in all of the city, homemade.
You know, they have locations in Roncie, Leslieville, beaches.
And, of course, they've chosen Mimico as one of their hotspots. So it's on the radar for these family-friendly businesses to say, you know what, this is the next hotspot.
And really, that's been an ongoing thing for about six years now.
We've seen some really consistent growth.
that's been an ongoing thing for about six years now.
We've seen some really consistent growth.
And I think people want to be in beautiful, safe community,
down by the water with everything the city has to offer.
We got that GO train, which is just a game changer.
You can be, if you're in Mimico and you can walk to that GO train,
you can be downtown at Union Station in 16 minutes.
I can go on and on. I know. We went, we took the go to an Argos game at BMO Field.
I think it was six minutes or something.
It's insane.
It's insane.
And I'm a four-minute walk from that station,
and so often people, they're telling me,
wow, we just can't think about Mimico
because it's just too far out of the city.
And I just say, okay, you've talked to me about, say,
this area of Pelham Park or this area of the junction.
Google map how long it's going to
take you to get to work. Right. And I can guarantee you, you can almost cut it in half by living in
Mimico. Yeah. Well, you know, like I said, we're next door. We could throw a stone and hit Mimico
here in New Toronto. And we absolutely love it here. Like we're eight years here now. And I,
I don't think I'm ever leaving. Like this is where I belong right by the lake and
West End. I'm also a West End guy.
Like everything I do and seems to be West of Yonge Street.
So that's where I went to power.
That's when it was, you know, so I'm a West End guy.
Love it here.
And we'll sprinkle more like stuff about Mimico.
I want to ask about your involvement in the community,
but to get to the jams,
because we're kicking out these jams today
and there's some bangers in your list. Like I was playing them last night.
How did you come up with it? Like, was it tough to come up with 10 songs? Like,
how did that process work for you? I have the most eclectic kind of
not cool music taste, I think, of anyone I know. And my friends consistently make fun of me.
For example, one of my friends, Steve McCarthy,
who's an awesome, incredible, and talented actor
who you've seen across the screen,
he played an acoustic Kiss from the Rose seal at my wedding
only four years ago because it's a known fact that I run to seal.
So I run three days a week and I listen to seal.
How weird is that? Yeah, I don't hear a lot of that. Don't worry, we're not listening to seal, So I run three days a week and I listen to seal. How weird is that?
Yeah. I don't hear a lot of that. Don't worry. We're not listening to seal people. Don't tune
out. I don't think that would scare enough people away. Like seals got some good jams.
If crazy wasn't in 1991, it would have made the list, the real estate 80s inspiration list that
we're going to go through today. Okay. So that's an important clarification. So all your jams are from the decade of the 1980s.
Yes, and they're songs that I have used in my 14-year career in real estate
to find motivation or chill moments in this heated, super competitive business that I'm in.
Right.
And, you know, bring me a smile and an edge that is so very Mike Majewski.
Is that shirt from the 80s?
It feels a little Miami Vice, wouldn't you say?
I feel like in like 89, I was rocking a shirt like that,
but maybe it's a faux retro.
It's definitely got that vibe feel.
Our last mailman, Mike, used to say,
my calling card is my Speary's loafers.
So wait, you're Mailman's Mike.
You're Mimico Mike.
I'm Toronto Mike.
It's the old Mike hour here.
Mike's a tract.
Mike's a tract.
Now, there's a lot of us too.
Okay, so we're going to kick out the first jam,
but first I'm going to give you some gifts for coming here.
Where do I begin?
Firstly, there's a Toronto Mike sticker.
Yeah, that's courtesy of StickerU.com.
Next time you get decals, go to stickeru.com.
They're based in Liberty Village.
They're a fantastic local family-run business.
And there are stickers and decals, et cetera.
Kick ass.
I have them in my studio and they're awesome.
Not coincidentally, I just did a ton of signs with them.
Oh.
Because they're doing new signs.
Yeah.
I have a pigeon logo and we have a lot of signs with them because they're doing new signs. Uh, they, I have a pigeon logo
and we have a lot of fun with crazy designs and, uh, I'm not a shy realtor in my marketing and,
uh, found these guys on the internet and they can do anything crazy cut out and fast for me.
So I'm, I, this is not planned. It just happens to be, I also happen to drink Great Lakes beer,
but you know. Okay. Well, Well, yeah, this is all authentic.
I love it.
So, okay.
So, StickerU.com, you're already a client and I urge everybody to try StickerU.com.
They've been sponsoring this program for a couple of years now.
But for four or five years now, Great Lakes Brewery has been partnered with Toronto Mike.
They help fuel the real talk.
Those eight fresh craft beers are out of the fridge.
Like, it's up to you, but you're welcome to pop one here.
I'm definitely going to pop one of these.
There's no way.
You might have to throw me one.
You're allowed.
So thank you, Great Lakes, for fueling the real talk.
Awesome.
I cannot wait to have another event on the patio of Great Lakes Beer.
Oh, my God.
Well, it's one of the best things about this neighborhood is we have them up there.
They're so happy to have them there as a staple in the community that's approachable.
It's not just a, let's pump beer out of here. You you can go there and there's a whole community that gathers around that
brewery and again sort of like sticker you and like palma pasta which i'll mention in a moment
but a family-run business like i just love these like it's a family-run independent they're fiercely
independent as they tell me at great lakes beer so shout out to great lakes beer there is a uh
hand sanitizer that ridley Funeral Home,
they're in New Toronto.
So speaking of locally based businesses,
so they're at like 14th and Lakeshore.
Ridley Funeral Home,
pillars of the community since 1921.
They want you to be safe.
So they sent over some hand sanitizer for you.
But shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
Pay tribute without paying a fortune.
Go to RidleyFuneralHome.com.
I appreciate that sanitizer.
That'll keep me away from there for a little bit longer.
That's the goal.
It's the goal.
They don't want to see you for a long, long time.
Palma Pasta.
They're Mississauga and Oakville, but authentic Italian food.
The Petrucci family has owned and operated it for over 30 years.
They're just fantastic people.
And that's just delivered this week.
That's a frozen meat lasagna for you to bring home. Really? Yeah people. And that's just delivered this week. That's a frozen
meat lasagna for you to bring home. Really?
Yeah. Wow, that's amazing. It is.
You're going to love it. And you'll let me know, Mike. You'll say,
Mike, it's the best lasagna I've ever eaten that came
from a store. It's just awesome.
So a whole bunch of gifts for coming
here. We love having
you as a part of the Toronto Mike team helping
to fuel the real talk. But people want to hear
some jams. So you ready for your first jam?
Yeah. What do we got on the list? What did you crack open
though? Okay, so yeah. This is a Canuck.
The Canuck is the staple, the standard.
Love the Canuck.
Here we go. In order. So I'll just start the
jam and then at some point I'll
fade it down and we'll talk about it. But I'm looking
forward to this because the sun is shining. It's a beautiful
Saturday here in New Toronto.
But I didn't ask you the big question and my
apologies, but here it is. Mike Majewski,
are you ready to kick
out the jams? Oh, I'm
ready. We have
The chance to turn the pages
Oh The chance to turn the pages on We can write what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet
Before we get much older
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun
Got a voice, try and understand it Make a noise and make it clear I warned everybody Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Why do you love this jam from John Farnham? So this is my offer night listing agent pump up song.
So what a lot of people don't realize, buyers out there, I know you've all, you know, all these lucky listing agents.
But the listing agent has the same amount of anticipational kind of anxiety, which is I got to perform tonight.
I got people to please.
And I got maybe 10 buyer agents who
are doing their job with really good people on the other side. I got a lot of responsibility.
So this is my coming together, epic, huge eighties ballad. Um, and it used to be one
of my favorite songs and I saw it. Andy Sandberg had a movie hot rod. I love that movie. So this,
this song is in hot rod when they kind of like come together at the end.
They all walk down the street.
You're right.
And then, you know, the other song they use in that movie,
which I always thought they used very effectively, was the Sister Christian.
Yes.
It's like, holy smokes, it's just epic.
But, okay, so this is the psych-up decision night.
Mike Majewski is getting himself all psyched up. You're driving over.
Yeah. Things are heated.
You know you gotta perform.
John Farnham.
You're the voice.
Was this in a movie soundtrack?
Do you remember this at all?
Or am I...
I'm sure. I'm sure it was
in several movies during the 80s.
It was definitely in Hot Rod.
But something at the time
but man what a jam it's been a long time
though since I heard it like it's almost a forgotten
80s epic jam
but you're keeping it alive
yeah there's some typical ones in here but you're gonna get a couple
off the cuff ones today that you've forgotten
about for sure
alright so we're gonna let Johnny here
play in the background I was gonna ask you about
community involvement.
I know that, Mike Majewski, you guys are doing a bunch of work in the community.
You're not just here buying and selling real estate.
You're making a difference.
Do you want to shout out some of the causes that you're involved in here?
Yeah, absolutely.
Of course, Lakeshore Arts, learners john english david hornell school
uh some of the local businesses of course ads and stuff not that everyone needs support it's about
supporting and just kind of having a congruent community so just because i'm naming someone's
name doesn't mean it's a charity or or some or they're in need uh of course daily bread we work
with we did a big fundraiser for them at christmas we do a big clothing drive every january for new circles it's actually an east end
clothing charity but incredible so just so much dignity they have a big facility where people can
come in new new refugees people in need from all over the city they have different like areas where
you you can go to this facility in that facility
and that's for clothing that's for clothing because there's also the furniture bank uh not
too far from here and i know they help out new canadians with like getting their like mattress
in their furniture and stuff exactly and these are super important uh you just can't imagine
coming to a country with you know very little on your back but a bag and starting a new and
new circle specifically they have it set up like a store.
So there's a lot of dignity in coming in and shopping,
trying stuff on, and then leaving.
And they also have job training and stuff like that.
So some of the charities.
We used to work with Reach for the Rainbow,
which got kids with disabilities.
Actually, say you didn't have the use of your legs and your arms or something like that.
They would get you in a harness up playing hockey for a Saturday or get you,
uh,
you know,
propelling or repelling,
like whatever it was.
Um,
they were working to get kids who would never have an experience like this up
and actually playing and,
and involved maybe at camp or something where they wouldn't otherwise be.
They were a great,
uh,
charity while they lasted.
And then,
uh,
they kind of faded away,
but,
um,
but awesome.
Like it's awesome.
And I hear like you guys are,
you're here,
you're,
you do closing business and you're working hard for your clientele,
but you're also helping the community.
So I think it's awesome.
Yeah.
You don't lay on your deathbed counting the number of houses that you've sold,
but you do,
uh,
count the number of people that you helped and that, uh back full you just feel it you know that it's important and
you're getting something from it Diamond line, lover boy

Sade
Is this the come down song?
Yeah, it's up there.
You know, it's sometimes you need to come down
before you come up, you know,
and Sade is prolific.
Like, if you get her albums, all of them, even Soldier of Love,
which is, I think, the most recent one, incredible.
And I'm not surprised at all to find out that some of my favorite artists,
including Canadian artists like Dallas Green,
I think I've listened to an interview or two where Sade is maybe his number two artist
or number one artist right up there.
You said you're from Dundas, Ontario.
Not too far from St. Catharines.
Not too far.
I was in St. Catharines for work the other day, actually,
and I was listening to Alexis on Fire.
Yeah, I was going to say,
that's the home of Dallas Green and Alexis on Fire, for sure.
Another one of my favorites.
So funny that I can run the seal,
but I also have a workout track that's all a watch out Alexis on fire.
Cause that's one of my favorite albums.
I'm going to blow your mind.
I think with this one,
because this is a shout out to Stu Stone.
Who's been appearing on this program once a week on pandemic Fridays.
We started this up when the pandemic struck in like March,
2020, we've done 61 of these now 61 weeks of pandemic Friday episodes. once a week on Pandemic Fridays. We started this up when the pandemic struck in like March 2020.
We've done 61 of these now,
61 weeks of Pandemic Friday episodes.
And we're going to do it till just about everybody's
had their second vaccination shot.
But the fun facts Stu likes to share with everybody
is that Sade, it's not her name.
That's the name of the band.
But everyone thinks it's her name.
They think she's Sade.
You knew this, right?
I've heard this. Because you look like you knew this i thought i was gonna blow your mind ah damn okay
well no it's it blew my mind the first time i heard it but i still you know for me i just
default to what i when i was a kid sure yeah this song was everywhere when it was uh when it was uh
current it was just everywhere like omnipresent. But good selection so far.
Unfortunately, it's the only female singer that I put in there.
And I just went with what my gut 10 songs were.
But I feel like definitely she represents.
Because there could have even been a Madonna song in there.
We're in the 80s.
Shout out to Dana Levinson, who made a surprise appearance on the last Pandemic Friday
to kick out Erotica by Madonna.
Oh, that one.
She likes to be called...
Apparently you're supposed to call Dana
Medina. Oh, I love that.
Alright, I love this.
Oh yeah.
If you are living
in a sense,
watch out. Oh yeah. When you make love Do you look in your mirror
Who do you think of
Does he look like me
Do you tell lies
And say that it's forever Do you tell lies and say that it's forever?
Do you think twice, but just touch and see?
Ooh, babe.
Oh, hey.
When you let go, do you let go?
Are you wild and willing, or is it just for show?
Ooh, come on
I don't want to touch you too much, baby
Cause making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it
Love me, love me It's breathing into my veins
Love me, love me
It's not a surprise
Love me, love me It's what I need Wow.
Right?
I actually took Monica, I think against her will,
because it's really not her kind of jam.
She's more of like a TLC kind of 90s R&B thing, hip-hop thing.
She kicked out.
What did she kick out?
I want to sex you up.
Color me bad so
but i took her to see def leppard i think heart open for them i think and i had the best fucking
part of my french best effing time give it to me buddy all right def leppard so why why this great
ballad i'll call this the ballad from hysteria oh this is this is high school for me man um
you just can't listen to this song and not
kind of get pulled in by it but also have this smirky grin on your face with how cheesy it is
and how much you love it it's just it's just decadence it's 80s thick cream cheese decadence
of rock there's just nothing i can say better about it. The climax to this chorus is just...
As Maestro would say, who was my guest yesterday, Maestro Fresh,
the crescendo is nice, yo.
This is from Hysteria.
And as I recall, because I own the cassette for Hysteria,
I think every song on that darn CD, or I guess it was a cassette,
but on that album, was a hit.
Oh, man.
It's completely hit-laden, this thing.
And their drummer had one arm.
I know, and the drummer had one arm.
And it's one of those
albums where they'll have hits like
Pour Some Sugar On Me would be the first hit and they'll just go.
And like two years later, they're still
pumping out hits from
Hysteria.
Amazing.
An amazing song
and amazing band.
And I think there was a period,
I think that the 80s
hair metal rock poison
and all these bands like that,
they had that moment
where grunge hit
and they all had to go
like underground for a while
because grunge was everything
and you couldn't be
like a hair metal band.
And then enough time went by,
they could all come out of the woodwork or whatever.
It was okay to say,
yeah, I like 80s hair metal and it's fine.
We don't have any...
Right now, I can't think of anyone that's as epic.
Even movies, the buildup.
There was something about the 80s that
was just so special everything was big right it was just like big hair shoulder pads yeah like
everything was big take it to the max and you like there is no room for improvement on this song
i don't care what producers listed into this like they nailed it is this mutt lang do you know your
music do you know is this mutt lang oh god i might be. Okay, I'll look it up during the next
jam, but it might be Mutt Lang
which would explain all that
man. Go big or go home. Yeah.
Great production for sure.
For sure.
Love it. Alright, we're gonna
let Def Leppard take us into jam number
four, so buckle up Oh, yeah. I feel your heart
It's beating time with mine
Yeah, but love, love
Love is on the line
He holds you down
But I know you want to run
Well, your heart, heart
Loaded like a gun
Oh, you feel, oh, so trapped and confused
Start with nothing, you've got nothing to lose
You can never, never, never, ever, never, never, never, ever hide your heart
Don't ever, ever, ever, ever try
If you don't give your heart wings
You'll never, never, never, ever, never, never, never, ever, ever fly.
Speaking of soundtracks.
Oh, yeah.
Woo, inspired choice.
Okay, this is Never.
This is from Moving Pictures.
So how come this song?
You know, if you're an 80s kid,
there's some piece of you that's been drilled into me anyway.
It's that when you're fighting and you're climbing and you're doing everything you can for your life,
that somehow you're dancing.
So this is that classic scene from Footloose
when Kevin Bacon's pissed.
And he drives, he's got a cigarette,
he's got a beer in the car, guys.
I don't know what that's all about.
But he drives into this empty factory and he like dance, frustrate,
fights himself.
It's probably the most, it's one of the most memorable scenes
in my early childhood.
And it like embarrassingly so like gets me juiced up.
Yeah, it's right up there with
uh the scene in karate kid where uh joe esposito comes in what is it uh what was the big jam there
uh yeah anyways the joe is the best yeah it's anyway it's just like this like a rocky montage
type thing it just gets just psyched up hey i got some fun facts for you about this jam though. Okay. So did you know that this band is Australian? No. No. Can you name another song
by this band? No. No one can. All right. Unless you live in Australia. But here's the fun fact,
I think, is that, okay, this is from the Footloose soundtrack. I'm going to just run down some songs
that were on the Footloose soundtrack. It's going to blow your mind. You ready? Yeah. Firstly,
Kenny Loggins' song Footloose. Big, big, big, big hit.
Big jam.
Okay.
Let's Hear It for the Boy by Denise Williams.
Big jam, big hit.
Almost Paradise.
Huge.
Canadian Mike Reno and Ann Wilson.
And Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero, of course.
Like, what a soundtrack.
That's crazy.
Yeah.
Listen, Bonnie Tyler's holding out for a hero
that song was like this song for me and then like i had this experience at a drag club which was
an amazing experience but it took the fight out of the song and now it's more of a beautiful kind
of song for me instead of like the fight of never but uh that could have made the that that scene
with them doing chicken on the tractors man look at that okay so and and holding out for a hero
for listeners of toronto mike because we bring him up often especially lately because he just
passed away but that's a jim stein jim steinman so jim steinman did uh bat out of hell all the
the meatloaf stuff and he does those big epic jams like Holding Out for a Hero, all those Bonnie Tyler
songs. Huge. And I love
Meatloaf. Not on here today, guys.
Sorry. And that's
there's no Kenny Loggins. Oh, is there one
Kenny Loggins song? Well, tune
in to find out. Yeah, no doubt.
I love that you're not sure. Okay.
The next jam inspired
the name of Maestro Fresh West's
biggest hit.
So shout out to yesterday's episode of Toronto Mic, but here it is.
Now everybody, have you heard?
If you're in the game, then the stroke's the word. Don't take no the word don't take
no rhythm
don't take
no style
got a thirst
for killing
break your
mind
yeah
put your right hand out
Give a firm handshake
Talk to me
About that one big break
Spread your ear pollution
Both far and wide
Keep your contributions
By your side
Strongman, strongman
Could be a winner, boy
And move quite a will
Strongman, strongman
Strong!
Strongman, strongman
You got your number down
Strongman, strongman
Say you're a winner, man You just your number down. Slow down, slow down. Say, I'm a winner, baby, just sit it down.
All right, Mike, before I turn it over to you,
there's a line in the song about let your backbone slide.
It's a line in the song, and that's the line that Maestro took
to name his first big hit, Let Your Backbone Slide.
Really? How do you know that?
He told me.
Oh, that's amazing.
He made his third appearance yesterday, and we covered it. I i think the clip but it's yeah in this song to let your
backbone slide uh but tell us uh this is the stroke of course from uh billy squire bill squire uh
why this jam buddy so this is just from the beginning all the way through to the end just
a super motivated whether you're part, whether you're doing something,
you want to have a good day, start your morning with this song.
I promise you, you're going to be good.
I'm going to confess, it's a rip-off, though,
because it wasn't so much part of my childhood
until I saw Happy Gil...
No, no, Billy Madison.
Billy Madison.
Billy Madison.
He pulls up to school in his T-bird i think he pulls up to
high school and he's like got this player in on the radio and he's got his jean jacket and then
i had this like memory and that was one of my favorite movies obviously do you remember the
clown in billy madison yeah do you know that clown is in the toronto mike schedule to be honest
that's amazing do you do the clown because it was filmed in this area, right? Yeah.
He's a, I think, Thornhill or something.
North York or Thornhill. But Do Do
The Clown is that clown from
Billy Madison. He's on the program, I think, early
June. Ah, that's amazing.
And so he's going to zoom in.
He's very careful.
But he's going to be in full
regalia. Like he's going to have his makeup.
He's going to be in the full thing.
So I'm going to totally be recording the video of that particular visit by Doodoo the Clown.
You're one degree of separation away from Adam Sandler.
It's like having him on the show.
And me and my brother Steve went to see Conan O'Brien.
They did a bunch of shows in downtown Toronto back in like 2003.
And the night that we got tickets to go see the recording of a corner,
Brian late,
late night with corner Brian.
Uh,
that was the night that Adam Sandler was the top guest.
So I was really close.
I just,
uh,
you know,
just didn't get that one degree of separation.
You're good.
I'm working on it.
I'm working on it.
Are you kidding me?
Adam,
get on the show,
man.
I used to buy all the Adam Sandler comedy CDs.
Like they're all going gonna laugh at you and all
these i loved them oh man yeah you can't listen to them now though there's some stuff on there
this is the thing about i know just a lot of stuff doesn't age well i noticed a big joke back then
would be related to uh the f f word slur for homosexuals that we don't use that would be like
a focal point of like a comedy book back then. And you're right.
You hear it.
And like,
I noticed this,
uh,
with Eddie Murphy.
Uh,
I went back and listened to like delirious and raw and stuff.
And there it's almost difficult because of the F bombs you would drop.
And I'm not talking about F U C K.
I'm talking about the slur.
It's prevalent.
And you're listening.
You're like,
well,
we laughed at that back then.
And it doesn't sound funny at all today.
Yeah, you can't even, it's not even funny.
You just go, oh shit, this is a different time.
Some things age better than others.
Oh man, there's a long buildup to this.
I almost feel like we should talk
and hit the post on it or something,
but let me start it up and then we'll chat here
because this song has a,
unless you want me to just shut up
and let this thing bathe over us,
but because this is epic.
Yeah, you got a lot of people, you got to let them hear this.
You got it.
Here we go. I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight
Oh Lord
Oh Lord
With your permission, we talk about why you chose the jam,
but then we shut the F up before the drums come in
and we just play that out loud.
Because that's the part where the heart starts bursting out of the chest.
But why Phil Collins in the air tonight?
You know, I was putting this together, this list,
and it was the one kind of more popular song I couldn't omit.
That I was just like, every time I hear this,
and even now listening to it with the earphones on,
like you're on earphones all the time, but I'm never on.
I'm listening to the radio.
I notice songs that you kind of take for granted
and are almost mediocre when you hear them in the wild.
If you listen to them in the headphones,
they're all of a sudden you're like, that's fucking brilliant.
It's like a 10 layer cake right now.
I'm eating it up.
Oh.
And again,
we will shut up and jack up the volume before the drums come in.
Because I know that we all kind of do the air,
air drums.
Is that what we call it?
We all play.
Yeah.
It's just,
and I know my,
I have a 19 year old who's in there somewhere.
And when he was like,
I'm going to say when he was like four, five, six years old,
we would blast this song.
And the drum part we would do.
And it was like a thing we would do.
And he loved it.
Like there's nothing else like it.
It's just epic.
So Inspired Choice again.
Yeah, big fan of Phil.
Do you like Genesis?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah. Do you like Peter Gabriel Genesis?
Yeah.
You just gotta get deep into it.
The prog
rock stuff?
When he says don't worry, it gives me chills.
There's some beautiful kind of revenge feel to this song. I know the reason why you keep me silent So, no, you don't believe
The hurt doesn't show
But the pain still grows
So I'm stranger to you and me
I can really come in the air tonight Hold on I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord.
I've been waiting in the air and I hold on, hold on.
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, hold on.
Mike, do you like country music?
You know, I like a little rockabilly.
I'm a jazz fan.
Again, anything uncool, I guess.
I'm a big Jazz 99.1 supporter
and always listen to those guys.
And they get into a little bit of country
and then the older stuff.
So like, I love...
Like bluegrass?
Or are you talking about like, uh,
you're talking about like fishing in the dark.
Do you know that song?
No.
Oh dude.
I,
we can't put it on there.
Cause I don't think it's from the eighties,
but like there's some country songs that you can't deny.
Like I'm not a Garth Brooks fan per se,
but like that thunder rolls song or whatever.
That is a great jam.
That one.
And I like the,
I got friends in low places drinking a beer. is that country or is that just a world i
think that's kind of it's like a new country i think it goes in country that's like when we're
all finally getting along that one song that we sing okay so i will shout out troy birch from
great lakes because i was on their patio to kick out the beer drinking jams and that was his
favorite we kicked out friends in Low Places.
I ask about country because our next Pandemic Friday topic is country music.
So I've been kind of diving into some like George Jones
and Tammy Wynette and all this.
And I didn't think I liked country,
but the fact is what country music does
better than anything else is it tells a story, okay?
It tells you a story.
Like these songs, I mean, Ode to Billy Joe, et cetera,
like these are stories.
And I'm listening
to that phil collins in the air tonight and i think part of it other than the fact it's got
that fucking amazing part where the drums build up and then go amazing but it's just telling you
a story you know what i mean oh for sure it's awesome that's why there's so many urban legends
tied to that jam because it's like what is this story And yeah, I just can't go wrong with that. Oh, but you know what?
This guy here, I know for a fact,
because a good friend of his reached out
because we almost had a sneak appearance
by him in the basement before the pandemic hit.
This guy listens to Toronto Mic'd occasionally.
So you have now, you're going to play a guy
who I know for a fact has tuned in
to several episodes of Toronto Mic'd.
Oh, wow.
So here we go.
Let's roll. Let's roll.
This song hypes me up, man.
Dude.
Just a little more time is all we're asking for.
Cause just a little more time could open closing doors.
Just a little uncertainty can bring you down And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how
So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender
And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender
And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light.
No one can take away your right to fight and to never surrender.
Love it.
Some CanCon, too.
That's awesome.
Yeah, of course.
Oh, I confirmed that. Yes, Muttt lang produced uh hysteria like i thought so and mutt lang not can con of course but was married to
shania twain for a very long time really well there you go so there you go close enough okay
so tell me as if it needs an explanation but why never surrender by the great montreal native
corey hart right so i hate you I keep bringing it back to real estate,
not to make it too much about real estate,
but a great real estate coach once said to me,
you know, Mike, you can never be unbeatable.
And whatever you're doing in the world,
sometimes you're going to get that one punch that catches your chin and you're out.
But you can always be unstoppable.
And, you know, I've pounded the pavement to get where I got
and to make the connections and create relationships with incredible people
to earn the trust.
And it's a never surrender kind of thing.
And it's my little kind of ode to that.
No, I will say, like I said, I bike Mimico a lot.
And I do know because you mentioned the pigeon decals or stickers or whatever. And I know Mimico is like an indigenous word for pigeon, right?
Yeah. Like that's what Mimico is. Resting place of the wild passenger pigeon.
That's what it means. Awesome. Okay. So where am I going with this? Yes. I bike the streets of
Mimico and I see your signs everywhere. Like, uh, I know we say in the intro and everybody who
listens here is ripping up the Mimico real estate scene, but that's not hyperbole like uh congrats to you man because i
see a lot of your signs and fotm tyler campbell he is very happy of his transaction he's loving
his new home and you put him there hey so shout out to tyler that's a big shout out by uh it's funny because i you know mimico is
where i center my focus for my advertising and all that stuff but to be candid so that i'm not
misrepresenting myself i sold 75 houses last year and only i think 17 were in mimico whoa whoa whoa
i feel like whoa whoa whoa it's like finding out I won't say it because my kid's in the back here.
But so, okay, so you don't have to be buying or selling in Mimico to reach out to Mike Majewski.
No, but if you want to see all the consistent Mike Majewski branding, drive down to Mimico.
Yeah, and there's a great billboard because when I bike to Great Lakes Beer, I take rural York.
And it's not too, what is that street? It's like just...
Judson.
You can't miss
the In the Know and Mimico, the Mike
Majewski billboard because it's always
entertaining. It's always fun and you're freshening it up
all the time.
We have fun with it. It's a good spot.
Shout out to Royal York
and their
painted bike lane, uh that's the location
of my broken wrist last march uh was me biking along well we've had you know last year we had
a fatality there yes and uh you know right at judson in rural york and right uh guys i'm working
with one of the bike lane coalitions across the city right now with the mra mimico residence
association incredible volunteer only uh community leadership I guess, but it's just people coming together and
anyone can be a member. So please look up Mimico Residence Association if you're interested in
being in the know in Mimico outside of real estate, sorry, but knowing and being part of
the community. It's $10 a year to join and you get all the info, but they're working right now
with the Bike Lane Coalition. And right now, one of the problems with bike lanes is everyone wants them to be specific
to the neighborhood and one of the coalitions in a meeting we had the other day really brought it
to our attention that you know if all the different neighborhoods aren't cohesively
connected through bike lanes there's a it becomes unsafe because you can't get from one neighborhood to the other neighborhood
and we'll never actually use bikes as transportation if we can't get across the city in a really
safe, kind of efficient manner.
And I think, you know, it's been a thing.
We know, yeah, new bike lane here, new bike lane there, but until they're connected and
it's an inner city across the city kind of thing, it's never going to be that kind of utopian bicycle community that it really can be.
So think harder, support your bike lane coalitions, get out there.
It's good for the environment.
It's good for your body.
Wear a helmet, all that stuff.
And now more CanCon.
This is appropriate. Well, they say I should approach you with caution
But not to let you be aware of my fear
Never know what you'll find
Don't understand your kind
Round here
Watching your moves, they look so radical
Hearing your words, they sound fanatical
Something inside reveals you're magical Thank you. Are you a strange animal, Mike?
I am.
Aren't we all in our own right way?
Only the interesting people, right?
So Gowan, man, who's now in, of course, he's now a lead singer for Styx.
Yeah.
And he's a future guest. He's not in the calendar yet, so I don't want singer for Styx. Yeah. And he's a future guest.
He's not in the calendar yet, so I don't want to oversell it.
Oh, dude.
It's going to happen.
Lawrence Gowan will be on Toronto, Mike.
We're going to make it happen.
But tell us why you chose You're a Strange Animal.
I got a thing for Gowan, man.
One, the storytelling thing.
So Criminal Minds, you know that song?
I think that's the first song I think I heard.
Yeah, go ahead.
Whatever one of the 80s radio stations in my van is um boom it might be boom yeah i think it is boom and they were talking about he wrote
that sitting inside a mock cell at the exhibition he came up with the idea for that song so he was
sitting in a mock cell at exhibition and at the CNE and literally was like, came up with this crazy cool 80s storyline to like, and, you know, come on.
His songs are amazing.
The guy's awesome.
Are you a Degrassi fan?
So I'm not a Degrassi fan only because it would be a lie to tell you I was, but I am.
I've sold on Degrassi.
Does that count?
Oh, that's cool.
Okay, because there's, of course,
after the Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High series,
pre-Next Generation,
there was a TV movie called Schools Out.
Schools Out, we talk about it a lot on this show.
I just had Caitlin on.
I just had Joey Jeremiah on.
Oh, wicked.
Schools Out, the soundtrack for schools
out has a whole whack of uh gowan on it including moonlight desires is on there too which is a great
banger too but yeah this guy's just uh just just great you're right but at some point larry decided
to grow up and call himself lawrence i don't know if you noticed that because it was like larry gowan
and at some point he said now it's lawrence Gowan. But Lawrence goes better with Gowan.
Like Gowan is a thing.
You know, that's a whole last name that you wish you had.
Oh, my cousins, I have Gowans in the family.
My mom's sister married a Gowan.
You're one degree of separation from just pure excellence all the way around.
Shout out to the Burlington Gowans.
Mark and Jen, yeah, for sure.
The other thing is apparently he's played the goose.
Oh, the blue goose. Yeah, is apparently he's played the Goose. Oh, the Blue Goose?
Yeah, it's the Mimico Institution.
Which is not there because it's being redeveloped,
which is unfortunate,
but hopefully that redevelopment turns into something even better.
But that institution,
which has a lot to do with why I moved to Mimico originally,
being in my 20s, being like,
this is the bar that I'm going to walk to.
Sweet.
And that's the bar that Dave Bolin's brother works at or something.
There's some legend there of Dave Bolin's brother.
I know when Dave Bolin won the cup with the Blackhawks.
I know the cup made its way to the Goose.
Yes.
It's the closest Toronto has had to the Stanley Cup since 1967.
The Goose, guys, is that weird, crazy bar that if you ever take the GO train to Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, that area,
you used to stop in Mimico before you knew what Mimico was.
And you'd be like, I don't know where I am,
but what's that crazy bar right on the train tracks?
And it actually used to be an old either burlesque house
or like a brothel at one point.
And it had a bar underneath with rooms above and a big parking lot.
And it was hidden kind of off the tracks.
And it was the kind of last of that
almost out West, like Calgary feeling bar
with that bar in the middle of the whole big space.
And totally, totally.
And it's just off the beaten path.
So it's like, you know,
cause you got, you got to,
it's not on Royal York and it's not,
it's, you got, it's not Parkland.
You gotta, yeah. You can't find it unless you know it.
You can't find it unless you know it.
You can't stumble upon that.
Yeah, I love hearing about the Mimico institutions, no doubt.
And is San Remo Bakery, is that in Mimico?
Yes.
Yeah, and they just lost their founder, sadly, in the last year.
But that's one of those places where you talk about Mimico places.
It's like we talk about Great Lakes, which technically is not Mimico because it's too north,
but on the other side of the Gardiner.
But the San Remo Bakery, that's a big Mimico stop.
Big time.
Shout out to San Remo.
I mean, people know San Remo before they know Mimico sometimes.
You just have to say San Remo and they're like, I know that place.
And there's some famous Mimico residents that I've had people come over
that live in Mimico. Like Biff N's some famous Mimico residents that I've had people come over that live in Mimico.
Like Biff Naked lives in Mimico now.
Do you know, like down by the Humber Bay area, if you will, the condos and all.
So Biff Naked moved from Vancouver and now lives happily in Mimico.
And she loves to ride her bike on the trail there.
Also, just shout out to Kim Mitchell who moved to Mimico as well.
Really?
Oh, man. Kim Mitchell's. I don't see it. I'm a little disappointed. I know. I know. Where's the patio lanterns? also just shout out to kim mitchell who moved to mimico as well really oh man kim mitchell's
i don't see i'm a little disappointed there's the patio lanterns listen patio lanterns is an
amazing song go for a soda is an amazing song say the name of that again say that second one again
go for a soda yeah i called it that too and because kim was on the program and i called
i corrected you he corrected me is it there's no. It's go for soda. Right. So just,
I have to now correct everybody
because Kim corrected me.
But here,
your penultimate jam.
Here we are
Born to be kings
We're the princes of the universe
Here we belong
Fighting to survive in a war
With the darkest powers And here we are
We're the princes of the universe
Here we belong
Fighting for survival
We've got to be the rulers of your world
I am immortal
Wow.
Queen.
Princess of the universe.
A song many people are like,
what?
Why do I kind of know this song,
but I don't at all?
How do you know this song?
Highlander.
Highlander.
Oh, yes.
Okay.
So I'm almost sure I watched,
my mom was my 80's movie
guru
I mean
she was the one
putting Star Wars
on for me
she was putting
Highlanders on
like you name it
I think my mom
loaded up
Full Metal Jacket
for me
and was like
this is a good one
you know
here I am 9
shout out to
2 Live Crew
but
yeah
that Highlander
like Highlander
is just
there's not enough
of a cult following
for that movie
I think
I mean guys
have you seen Highlander
it's got Sean Connery
in it
it goes back to
medieval times
it's like in Scotland
then it's in New York
and they're fighting
with swords
so how did I miss it
like
it's a mid 80's thing
right Highlander
have you not seen it
no
never seen it
dude
I just planned
your Saturday night I'm almost embarrassed to be saying it out loud oh my god it's incredible right highlander have you not seen it no never seen it dude you i just planned your saturday
night i'm almost embarrassed to be saying it out loud oh my god it's incredible there's a series
i'll check it out i'll check it out oh my god guys highlander check it out um yeah so there's
a well there's a scene where the bad guy's driving through new york and i think he's like driving his
car through people and he's got that
song on and the reason I bring it up so the the line the tagline of Highlander is there can be
only one and in in real estate that's just not true there's uh thousands of really good realtors
but sometimes as a guy looking for his own motivation out there talking I get a little
competitive and I'm like you know what I? I'm going to go for this.
There can be only one.
And a little Sean Connery in there.
It's definitely worth checking it out.
You've sold me, man.
I'm going to check it out for sure.
I don't know what's taking me so long.
I'm going to check it out, and I'm going to bust to the final jam only because I felt some drops.
Yeah, do it.
So we're racing against Mother Nature here.
So here is your final jam Thank you. It's all the same
Only the name will change
Every day
It seems we're wasting away
Another place
Where the faces are so cold
I drive all night
Just to get back home
I'm a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted
Dead or alive
Wanted
Dead or alive Sometimes I sleep
Sometimes it's not for days
The people I meet
Always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell a name
By the bottle that you drink
Sometimes when you're alone
All you do is think
I'm a cowboy
On a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted, wanted Head of the line Bunch of-y.
Heck yeah.
Wanted dead or alive.
Young Guns soundtrack?
I was just going to say that's what it's all about for me.
Wow. Guys, Young Guns. If you haven't going to say that's what it's all about for me Wow
Guys, Young Guns, if you haven't seen that
Get one and two
My wife just got me for Christmas
A Young Guns
Set acid wash jean jacket
Wow
And it's too small, it could fit you brother
And maybe I should gift it to you
I would never take it off
I thought you were going to say I would never take it off. I thought you were going to say, I would never take it.
No.
No, please.
I have no style sense.
If you gifted me that acid wash tuxedo,
whatever it is,
that Bon Jovi,
that Young Guns tuxedo,
I don't know if I could ever take it off.
That would be amazing.
Are you kidding me?
But dude, yeah,
this jam,
big, big, big fucking jam for bon jovi well to think that he
wrote that album almost for this soundtrack i always blows my mind when an artist can go
to a film right you know this isn't like find your own inspiration in your heart and in your
soul that whatever brought you to your art this is here's what we've come up with and we need kick-ass songs for
it and he he fucking nailed it yes yes no i know i love and i love soundtracks like i just have
always like not just 80s soundtracks like footloose or dirty dancing or whatever but i like
like the alt the pulp fiction soundtrack i've spent a million times yeah like reservoir dog
soundtrack the forest gump soundtrack was when I started listening to music
I think, you know
It's got
but yeah, you got Bob Seger on there
you got Jefferson Airplane
yeah
and just earlier
I had a text from my buddy Cooksey
he sent me this audio piece and a text
and it's just a couple of chords
right away I know
it's from the Judgment Night soundtrack
because he knows how much I love
the Judgment Night soundtrack it takes knows how much I love the Judgment Night soundtrack
it's like rappers and hard rock
bands mashing up into
produced music for the soundtrack it's awesome
that's one of the things that of course I love technology
and it keeps improving which is the best thing about it but
with some of the streaming services when you say
hey play me this soundtrack
it's limited because there's so many songs so like i can't tell you guys how many times i've
been driving on an important day and said play me the footloose soundtrack and you get like three
tracks and let me tell you it's mostly kenny loggins for sure for sure uh the yacht rocker
himself kenny kenny loggins uh yeah i know man and i gotta say you hit it out of the park here For sure. The yacht rocker himself, Kenny Loggins. Yeah, I know, man.
And I got to say, you hit it out of the park here, though.
Like, this is like your 80s jam kicking.
At some point in the summer, later in the summer.
Oh, this is still spring, right?
Yeah, so in the summer, you should come back and do like 90s jams.
Like, you should just have this as an ongoing series.
Oh, get ready, because it's going to be different.
Oh, man, I'd love it.
I'd love it.
But thanks so much, man.
I want a picture of you in front of the Mike Majewski van
before you depart here.
And enjoy your lasagna, your sticker.
I was not expecting these treats whatsoever.

On a Saturday afternoon.
Yeah.
And I'll make sure the 19-year-old's got to come out and say hi to you.
He's listening to his hip-hop.
That's what the kids do, you know.
They listen to their hip-hop.
So I'll drag him out.
But, dude, what a pleasure. We'll get our photo by the tree because this is the one do, you know. They listen to their hip-hop. So I'll drag him out. But, dude, what a pleasure.
We'll get our photo by the tree because this is the one week of the year,
the one week of the year when the tree is in full bloom.
So we have to make sure we do that.
