Joining
me today making
their return to Toronto
Mic'd, but Brock's in-person
debut are Sunshine
and Broccoli.
Welcome back.
Thank you so much for having us.
Welcome back, Sunshine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you
for accommodating us today.
Well, listen, I need to address
the elephant in the room,
which is that Brock sounds amazing.
Here he is in the TMDS studio.
Sunshine, up until about a half an hour ago, I thought you were going to be sitting beside Brock here in the TMDS studio. Sunshine, up until about a half an hour ago,
I thought you were going to be sitting beside Brock here in the basement,
but you are obviously joining us remotely.
What excuse do you have for not being here today, Sunshine?
Ah, I blame it on the kids.
Good.
Yeah, yeah.
I got a sick one home, a husband who is traveling for work,
and mama is on duty.
Well, that's the best darn excuse I think I've ever heard.
So, yeah, and as I told you before I press record, if those kids need Tending To by Mama Sunshine, don't hesitate.
In fact, they can be on the program if they want.
Okay, well, right now, Peppa is babysitting, so hopefully Peppa is doing a good job
and we are in the Peppa trance.
But if something comes up,
it's real life.
I'm a real mom
and we got to do what we got to do.
Here's hoping it's a 90-minute episode
of Peppa Pig.
Okay, so let's set the table.
This is not your first time on Toronto Mic,
but it is the first time Brock's been in the studio.
But if people want the initial deep
dive of Sunshine and Broccoli
where we talk about your origin story,
your inspirations,
your relationships with the other
children's entertainers,
I'm thinking, you know, Splashin' Boots
and Fred Penner and all these cats,
Sharon and Bram, we can talk about
all that again because I recently spoke with Sharon and Bram.
But we talked about your Juno nomination.
What's next for you?
Everybody needs to go to episode 843 for that deep dive.
But here's our catch up.
How are you doing, Sunshine?
Everything, thank God, is amazing.
I am a mom of two now.
Last time I'm certain we spoke, I had one.
So I have an almost three-year-old and a 10-month-old tomorrow.
So life is busy, but life is amazing.
And really, it's so wild.
So we just released our sixth album.
But they are such an inspiration for me.
Songwriting.
It's really changed up the way we do things.
Cause really we have like sunshine abruptly dance parties all the time.
And my three-year-old's like,
mama,
stop singing.
That's the first time I've heard that.
Okay.
All right. You alluded to the sixth album. Now we're going to kick out the jams and we're gonna uh also hear some music from uh born to be brave but
that's the name of the album it's available now born to be brave your your your sixth studio album
but uh right off the top i have some like specific questions here but congratulations miss sunshine on
the uh birth of your child.
I did the math.
I think like when we connected via zoom last time,
maybe,
maybe the conception was at night.
Like,
I just think maybe you had such a great experience on Toronto,
Mike.
All because of you,
Mike.
I did the math.
You're an aphrodisiac.
I did the math.
Okay.
First question actually goes to Broccoli.
Now this is from Eric,
an FOTM. You also FOTMs, of course, friends of Toronto Mike.
Mike, if you get a chance, could you ask
Broccoli if he has any fun
Fergie Oliver or
Just Like Mom stories?
I'm assuming Brock got to visit the set
and interacted with Fergie Oliver.
So, for those who are like, why would
Broccoli know about this?
Broccoli, who is your father?
My father is Paul Burford, and he was the producer and creator of the game show Just Like Mom.
And he's also an FOTM who's been on multiple times.
Yes, he has.
Can I shout out his buddy who drives him here?
Of course.
Give him a shout out.
Tim Heron.
Am I saying Heron right?
I feel like I butchered it in the past.
Yeah, I believe that's right.
Tim Heron, good guy. I actually saw him at Vandits,
which was Stu Stone's movie,
but I'll get to Stu in a minute.
Any stories at all, Mr. Broccoli,
about Fergie Oliver or Just Like Mom?
I just remember being on set every morning
and I remember Fergie was kind of a rock star to me because
he was you know he did all these commercials and he was how about those blue jays those blue jays
exactly and he knew all of them and i used to kind of ask him questions just about the the blue jays
and everything and i was just in awe and seeing him on set and um he was just such a a presence
um him and both his wife at the time um who was like a miss canada or something she was a miss
canada right like she was and she was just so her demeanor was so kind and just the set was i i was
just like what is going at first i was young i was like what's happening why are these people all
here what's my dad doing on stage talking to this man?
And then a year later, I guess, I was older and it sunk in.
And it was just the atmosphere was so palpable and exciting.
And I just had the best experience being on set.
That face when you realize your dad created Just Like Mom.
Right?
Yeah, that was just like, whoa, okay.
All right, now I'm thinking
when Paul Burford came on the first time
to talk about Just Like Mom,
he wore this amazing Just Like Mom sweater.
And let's let the people know,
and hopefully they'll see it in the photo,
which I'll snap with Brock afterwards.
Lisa Sunshine, once again,
avoids taking that selfie with me by the tree.
So well done, Lisa.
But this sweatshirt I'm wearing, it says, it's cool to be kind.
And luckily there's snow on the ground.
So I'm like, what a great day to wear this wonderful hoodie.
But I will just say, this is the warmest hoodie I think I've ever worn. And as I sit
here speaking with you, I am literally
melting like the Wicked Witch of the
West in Wizard
of Oz. But what a comfortable
wonderful sweatshirt. And most
importantly, that's a great message. It's cool to
be kind. I've been telling my kids that. It is
cool to be kind.
It really is. And that was our Juno
nominated album. That was is. And that was our Juno-nominated album.
That was the merch from that.
Can I bring in Stu Stone for a minute?
Yeah, bring him in.
So Lisa Sunshine,
do you remember meeting Stu Stone?
I sure do.
And I actually just saw Adam Rodness the other day.
And actually, we were just talking about that.
And I was like, I'm going on Toronto Mike.
and actually we were just talking about that and i was like i'm going on toronto mic um yes we met stew stone at a canada's wonderland event with doo doo the clown who's like his
cousin or something yeah yeah he was like you guys are amazing and it was so cool i mean i know
his sister well i know his his fam. And it was awesome.
Like, we really chatted with him.
And then he gave us a shout-out on your show, which I just thought was so awesome.
And they are having, like, tremendous success.
And we're just so proud of them.
So Stu's back here on Monday.
So just to let people know, they only have to wait until Monday to get some more Stu Stone in their life, which is he'll be on toast with Cam Gordon.
I wonder what's new with Cam.
Maybe we'll find out Monday.
Maybe we won't.
Stay tuned.
But I want to find out from you two, what was the real reaction to when Stu Stone texted you or messaged you and congratulated you on winning a Juno Award that was actually won by Splashin' Boots.
You were nominated, but you didn't win.
What was it?
Was it like thanks to?
I'm just curious.
I need the real talk.
What was it like when he congratulated you on winning an award you actually did not win?
I think I got the message.
I feel like it was at night.
I don't think I responded for a few days later.
I was like, wait, did I win?
No, I didn't win.
I wasn't even nominated that year.
But he's wicked.
He's so awesome.
He's so cool.
And like, I mean, we're going to win this year, Stu.
So why don't you just give me an early congrats?
Is it?
I mean, I've talked to Stu about this.
We leaned in on, I think it was Pandemic Fridays back then.
But clearly he confused Sunshine and Broccoli
with Splashin' Boots, like S&B.
Yes.
I'm just legit curious,
because Splashin' Boots have also kicked out the jams
on Toronto Mike, like you're about to do.
But does that happen often?
Like, is there a confusion at all?
Because you're S&B and you're targeting the same demographic.
So it's very funny because I think as the years go on um you know i remember
doing a show uh it was a few years ago and they think brock looks like splash so they're like
brock will be on stage and they're like it's splash and i was like i'm like, okay. He's blue.
Yeah.
They're like, where's keys?
Like, where's that piano?
Not so much anymore, but it's a compliment.
They're fab.
So, I mean, we don't, me and Tess don't get mixed up for each other, but I can see how they think Broccoli and Splash look alike.
Well, luckily you're like Betty and Veronica, you and T tess so we get the hair color difference exactly yes all right shout out to splash of
boots but this is all about of course sunshine and broccoli and my kids is it tough i'm legit
curious what it's like when you have a fan base uh fervent fans of your music because i have a
couple in this household and then they age out like is
there that moment of like oh we don't we only get to like borrow them for like five years or whatever
and then they they literally will be like into pokemon only or something like that like is there
some sense like that that you wish you could you could uh have that fervent fan base like age with
you we do which is really cool.
I mean, obviously we're going to cap out.
You know what I mean? Like we for sure have a cap as we should.
I think with this new album,
what makes it really cool is it's very new age.
So it's very up with the times.
And with our CD release show,
we actually had a bunch of older kids who were rocking out.
So I love this album because with our fan base, we always say our fan base is like two to ten.
But we'll always get the younger ones.
So getting the older ones is like a privilege, you know, because we're like, you know, we're like, you know, at some point.
But what's really cool is you know
we've been doing this for 21 years so when kids come up to me older kids I'm talking like during
universities I'm like do you remember me and I'm like and I remember all the faces so I'm like
oh my god you're like you're an adult like you're a full and they always remember our first album
because that was like the album that
they listened to and we had a song called i want to be and it says i want to be a sour key so it's
always like oh my god remember sour key or like it's funny it's funny well you know 21 years okay
again i'm so good at math i'm gonna do it again but let's say i'm into you and i'm like five okay
21 years later i could be having kids and now you're going to have like,
like,
like,
like a sunshine and broccoli fans bringing their like two and three year
old to see you just like pass.
This is,
this happened with like Rafi and Fred Penner.
And now what happens with you?
Yeah.
It's like passing on the torch.
And also there's a sense of nostalgia.
Even some of my guitar students were some of the,
they used to come to our concerts when they were kids and now they're 18 and
whatnot.
And they just remember having a blast and loving it.
So yeah.
So the new album,
if somebody listening has a child,
like particularly in that,
like two to 10,
you know,
10 might be pushing it a little bit,
but let's say two,
because I have an eight year old.
I think the six year old would love to listen.
I know the six year old would be like way into like born to be brave.
But if you were going to direct somebody to pick up your new album and we're
going to play some jams that you love,
and we're going to play a couple of jams from born to be brave,
but where would you direct them right now?
Either of you.
Brock, I'm giving this to you.
Okay, give it to me.
To which song?
Like, wait, no.
If somebody now listening is like, I want to buy or stream,
I want to get Born to Be Brave to play for my five-year-old.
Oh, well, then it's available on all mainstreaming platforms
such as Spotify, Amazon Prime,
iTunes,
and Apple Music.
Yeah, it's available everywhere.
And it's like, they want to see it live
because that live show is amazing.
Like, are you doing
any live shows right now?
We just did our live show,
our CD,
our album release party,
and it was amazing.
Sold out two shows,
and it rocked.
And we have footage from that
that will be available very soon.
Speaking of footage, I need to ask you, Brock,
if you listened to Roger Christian on Toronto Mic'd.
I did listen to Roger Christian.
I thought it was amazing.
And I think he's an impeccable person.
So you did a wonderful interview with him.
Well, shout out to Paul Burford again,
even though he got one earlier,
because he was like the special guest on that episode.
But I was blown away that this guy
who helped design the lightsaber
and R2-D2.
Millennium Falcon.
He's just like in
Mimico. Yeah, he's just over
here, a stone's throw away. Did you know that
Sunshine, that guy we're describing,
this creative genius who
designed all those iconic
things for Star Wars, won an Academy Award for it.
Did you know he lives in Mimico?
I didn't know he lives in Mimico, but I was blown away that he's good friends with Brock's dad.
Unbelievable.
Okay.
And in that episode, I think your proud father alluded again to your hockey career.
So just before we get to these jams, and I have gifts for you, Brock, that you'll have to share with Sunshine because he's not here to receive them.
But how good a hockey player were you?
Well, they used to call me the Bullet because I was kind of stocky,
but I was super fast, and I had no fear in playing hockey.
So I played all the way up to junior, and I had a great hockey career.
I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I was pretty darn good back in the day.
I'm a little better than I am now.
I've played in a couple beer leagues, and I've lost some of my stamina,
but I still got the speed.
Sunshine, have you ever watched your buddy here here brock play uh hockey i have not but
i know a lot of people that used to play with him when they were younger and they're like that
broccoli he was something the legend the legend uh precedes him okay now i'm gonna play a little
song here and then you'll tell me whether this is on the new album or not okay because i was
listening to this and i'm like i hope that's on the new album so i'll play it and then you'll tell me whether this is on the new album or not okay because i was listening to this and i'm like i hope that's on the new album so i'll play it and then you can tell me
this song doesn't make any sense this song all right i'll bring it to the background because
brock is shaking his head so this song doesn't make any sense uh what album does that appear on
that was the last album, Hug Life.
And that's a wicked song.
Do you love it?
Yeah, I do love it.
And that album, so I had copies of that album.
That would be like when you're in the car,
even short road trips or whatever,
that was the album that was played for my two kids who are now six and eight.
So we're going back maybe when they were four and six
or whatever.
But this was one of the great jams on that album.
And I will just tell you, they have not heard the new album yet.
And they are a little older, but I'm sure they'll love it.
But they absolutely adored this album.
So you guys do good work.
Well, that's great.
And also there's a music video for this song that just came out on our YouTube channel.
That's what fooled me.
So yes, that's why I thought maybe it was going to appear on the new album
because it's like three weeks old, this video.
But amazing.
Okay, so I got to get my hands on the new album is what we're learning here because I don't actually have any jams from the new album.
But it's available right now.
And again, everybody, it's called Born to Be Brave.
Now I want to ask you guys about the process in coming up with your five favorite songs of all time.
So each of you
gave me a list of your, and I know that can change by the hour. I'm not foolish, but Lisa,
first start with you because I want to know like, like how you came up with five songs.
And then Brock, I got to ask about yours because yours changed multiple times over the past 48
hours, which I find interesting. So Lisa, was it difficult to come up with five songs?
Yes, I was stumped.
We get interviewed all the time.
And when I got these questions, I was like, I'm stumped.
Because I was thinking about it.
I was like, I love music.
Like music is in my innards.
But I was like, I love musicals.
I love like, I felt like this song, I felt like I was going to be judged. That's the truth.
You know what? Because, yeah,
the masses right now, you know, you're on
the hugely popular Toronto Mic, and you're
going to talk about why you love your five songs,
and you don't want somebody to say, like,
what weak songs, what
pathetic songs, you have terrible taste
in music. Like, you're putting yourself
out there, right? And you're feeling like you will be judged.
I felt like it wasn't going to be good enough.
My choices are
maybe nostalgic
to what made me love
music.
I will tell you, we do not judge
someone's jams on this program.
People come and kick out the jams and I always
say, your jams are your jams.
There's no shame in that game.
You love what you love.
And we'll find out the reasons when you talk to us.
But I love the five you chose, Lisa and Brock.
I got like your five songs.
And then I got like, okay, swap out these two.
And then literally this morning, I'm like, okay, we're making another change.
So tell us about the process for you.
It sounds like you really struggled with this.
Well, I did.
I struggled in the sense that, do I want to put down songs that were meaningful to me at a certain time?
Or that mean something to me in sort of a technical way of how I'm inspired by that song.
And so I just struggled with it.
Naming your five favorite songs,
being a musician is so hard,
but I think I'm happy with the choices I made.
Okay, so if people haven't heard
a Kick Out of the Jam episode of Toronto Mic'd,
and shame on you if you haven't,
because we've done this over a hundred times now.
But after I give some gifts to Brock,
who is here live, and I can actually hand him some stuff, I have some gifts to Brock, who is here live,
and I can actually hand him some stuff, I have some stuff to give him,
then we're going to go one by one.
So I'm going to start with Lisa, with Lisa's first jam.
And Lisa Sunshine, again, everybody hears that name Sunshine,
thinks it's fake, but Sunshine's your real name, right?
Sunshine is my real name.
Okay, and for those who can't read my words as I speak them,
which would be impossible, Sun is S-O-N.
I think it's amazing you really are a sunshine,
and Brock, it's natural that you'd be a broccoli.
That was my nickname in college.
It just came naturally, Brock Broccoli.
Wow, and I joked when I found out
you would not be able to make it live in studio, Lisa, I
told Brock, we'll open with Ain't No Sunshine.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone.
Keep going, Brock.
Keep going.
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone.
She's gone.
She's gone.
She's at home with her kids today.
I know.
I know.
I know. I know. I know. I know. I know. I know, I know I know, I know, I know
What a jam
It's Bill Withers, right?
Yeah, Bill Withers
Oh, wow
Love that song
Amazing, that guy's got a bunch of great jams
Okay, Brock, you said some kind words to me
Before I pressed record about Palma Pasta
Tell me what you told me then
I think it's probably the best pasta I've ever had
My father and I And you're legit here I'm legit I didn't tell you to say that Tell me what you told me then. I think it's probably the best pasta I've ever had.
My father and I, I remember. And you're legit here.
I'm legit.
No, no, no.
I didn't tell you to say that.
No, you didn't pay me $5 before the show.
Never, never.
Okay, keep going.
But I think it's absolutely so tasteful
and I've never had something so delicious.
I honestly finished the whole thing in one sitting.
So I highly recommend it.
Do you want another one?
Yes.
Okay.
Did you get, remind me, meat or veggie?
Meat.
Okay.
You are leaving here with a large meat lasagna from Palma Pasta.
Thank you so much.
I'm so excited to eat it.
It's worth the drive for you.
And I got more gifts for you. I also have some fresh craft beer for you from Great lakes brewery i was actually at great lakes yesterday they have a great well they have now two
locations oh they're in lcbo's across this fine province but they have this like the hq in southern
etobicoke i was there yesterday and they have a new like brew pub at jarvis and queen's key which
is really great but i was at hq yesterday to talk to the owner, Peter Bullitt,
and my buddy there, Troy, to arrange for the fact that when FOTMs,
and you're invited to this, Brock, and I'm hoping you and Paul make an appearance,
and maybe Tim, and dare I hope that Lisa makes,
because I never actually met Lisa Sunshine.
I feel like maybe she's a hologram.
I have no idea.
But on December 3rd, which is a Saturday,
at noon,
FOTMs are collecting at
Palma's Kitchen, which is one of the
four Palma Pasta locations.
I put a map on TorontoMic.com, but
Palma's Kitchen, and we're going
to have a live recording, and people are going to come
on the mic and chat, and I'm looking forward
to this. But yes, we're at Palma
Pasta's Kitchen, so Palma pasta will feed
us delicious authentic
Italian food but yesterday
I made a deal with Great Lakes
all FOTMs who come out to this
live recording are going to get some
fresh craft beer from Great Lakes
beer how amazing is that
amazing amazing yeah
all the more reason to go now we can't
smoke I know I know i know uh
you know this this episode is not necessarily targeting that three to ten year old this is
for the parents and and we live in canada and it is completely legal but do either of you
partake in a consumption of cannabis you've never seen because you i will say this real talk
real talk yeah your children's entertainers.
Yes.
This episode is for their parents.
You don't have to answer it.
It's a personal question.
But I will say if you do consume cannabis, which is 100% legal in this country, you should
buy your cannabis and cannabis accessories at Canna Cabana because they won't be undersold.
And there's over 140 locations across the country
so i'll let you off the hook there that's all i'm going to say on that shout out to sticker

I actually think Sticker For You did our first stickers that we ever had, actually.
Great company in Liberty Village, and they make quality products. So that's awesome that you guys use Sticker For You.
Yes, yes.
So that's, okay, that, that speaker is from
Moneris.
Okay.
You might have,
you know,
Moneris is like a
payment company
across this country,
but Moneris wants
you to listen to
their awesome
podcast,
which is in
season three.
It's called
Yes,
We Are Open.

FOTM Al Grego,
who's going to be
at TMLX 11,
which is what I'm
inviting you guys to at Palmer's Kitchen on December 3rd.
You can subscribe at yesweareopenpodcast.com.
Great podcast.
It's inspiring.
He travels the country talking to small Canadian business owners
and telling the story of their origin, their struggles, and future outlook.
So that's what you're going to listen to on that wireless speaker.
That sounds amazing.
Thank you for this.
This is actually very nice.
Nice box.
Quality.
You're going to dig it.
Box, man.
And while you're listening to great podcasts,
a couple more I'm going to tell you about really quickly.
One is called Life's Undertaking.
It's hosted by Brad Jones from Ridley Funeral Home.
We're going to record a new episode this afternoon.
I get to co-host that.
So if you want more Toronto Mike in your diet,
you might want to, in fact, I highly recommend
you subscribe to Life's Undertaking.
Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
And last but not least on the podcast front,
The Advantaged Investor from Raymond James Canada.
The Advantaged Investor provides valuable perspective
for Canadian investors who want to remain knowledgeable, informed, and focused on long-term success.
Hosted by Chris Cooksey.
He might, you know, speaking of being great at hockey,
Chris Cooksey will be at TMLX 11 unless he's at his son's hockey game.
His son, Cole Cooksey, is a heck of a player.
I don't know if he's Brock level, but he's very, very good.
Oh, really?
Yeah, Cole Cooksey.
So just write that name down somewhere.
Yeah, look out for him in the OHL NHL. And if anyone
has any questions at all,
speaking of music, this guy knows music
because the drummer for the Watchmen.
Do you guys like the Watchmen? I love the Watchmen.
I remember we saw the singer.
He came out. Okay.
A TMLXX yes the 10th one
where I saw you Brock didn't see Lisa there that's okay Lisa's avoiding me that's okay that's okay
but uh Danny Graves is the lead singer the drummer for that band is Sammy Cone and if you have any
real estate questions you can find Sammy Cone actually even drumming questions you can ask him. Sammy.Cohn
at properly
homes.ca and Cohn is
K-O-H-N.
Lisa Sunshine.
I'm still here.
Are you ready
to kick out the jams?
I'm always ready. I'm always ready.
Love it, Lisa.
We're going to let it go for about a minute here.
To never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine.
That's your way.
You always walked a step behind.
We've got to let Bette do her big part here, and then I'll fade it down.
Here it comes.
Not yet.
Not yet, yet.
Wait for it.
I like your interpretive dance you're doing here.
While you were the one with all this terrain.
one with all his terrain A beautiful face
without a name
for so long
A beautiful smile
It's coming.
Here it is.
It's coming.
Here it is.
Here it comes.
Did you ever know
that you're my hero?
And everything I would like to be
I can fly higher than an eagle
You are the wind in my way Talk to me, Lisa.
Why Bette Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings?
Why did you stop at the fly?
Oh, yeah.
Fly.
Oh, hello. Oh, thank you. I'm glad. Thank you. Oh, hello.
Oh, thank you.
I'm glad.
Thank you.
Oh, good.
Some more sunshines in my life.
There you go.
So, Bette Midler was what made you love singing.
Can you hear Peppa in the background?
Yeah, but I'm okay with it, to be honest.
Like, I can hear little Peppa,
but no one's ever complained about a little Peppa in the background.
Okay, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to answer the question.
I'm going to put myself on mute.
Okay.
And then we're going to figure this out.
Yeah, yeah.
Give me the Bette Midler story,
then I'll go to Brock,
and you got yourself like five minutes to do it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bette Midler, she
is, she, okay,
so my aunt introduced me to Bette Midler.
You go to Brock and I'll come back.
Oh, I can't go to Brock
because I'm still playing Bette Midler. Okay, no.
Lisa, don't worry about the kid. What's your kid's name?
This is Zade.
Say hi. Hey, there's Zade.
Hi, buddy. Zade, look at the sweater, there's Zade. Hi, buddy.
Zade, look at the sweater I'm wearing.
Look.
It's cool to be kind.
Can you say hello? Don't look at the Canada Cabana poster.
That's for later.
Hi.
Okay, so Bette Midler.
Mom.
I know, sweetie.
I love Bette.
Okay, sure.
Bette Midler is, oh gosh, okay.
Lisa, honestly.
You're right, folks.
This is real life.
Don't worry.
I love it.
It's so-
Bette Midler,
my aunt introduced me to Bette Midler
when I was like seven, six or seven.
And I remember sleeping at her house
and just listening to Wind Beneath My Wings
like 900 times.
I maybe have sang that song
seven million times in my life.
Love it. Because when they found out that I could sing at a very young age, 900 times. I maybe have sang that song 7 million times in my life.
Love it.
Because when they found out that I could sing at a very young age, it was always like,
women eat my wings. Now I could never sing it. But I think it's nostalgic for me because really Bette Midler was like my, oh my God, I can do this and I can sing this. And so
I don't know, for me, I think it was more when you said, what are your favorite songs?
It was like, what inspired me?
Like, what songs did I listen to 7 million times that, like,
gave me all the good feels?
Lisa, with no wind beneath my wings,
we might not have a sunshine and broccoli today.
I agree.
Shout out to Bette Midler.
Yeah.
What is her nickname? The Fabulous. Yeah. What is her nickname?
The Fabulous Miss M?
What is her nickname?
I might be butchering that.
What do we call her?
The Divine Miss M?
She's got a nickname.
I got to Google the nickname real quick.
Yeah, yeah.
I forget what it is.
I saw her on Broadway and I just cried like a baby.
Okay.
The Divine Miss M is her nickname.
All right, Lisa, great job.
I love that you're multitasking with the
kids because it's so freaking real. I love the
authenticity. So don't worry about that. I'm going to go to
Broccoli now to hear his first jam and then we'll come
back to your next jam. But
do what you got to do. I'm here when you're back.
But firstly, let's
get to the same question
for our very own Brock. I'm just double
checking I've got the right first song.
Yes, I do.
Okay.
Love it.
Brock Lee.
Yes.
Are you ready to kick out the jam?
I am ready.
I was born ready.
That's it.
That's it.
That's it.
That's it.
That's it. There must be some kind of way out of here
Say the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessmen there drink my wine
Clown men dig my earth
None will level on the mine
Nobody up in this world So because you're in person, Brock, it's easier for me.
You can talk and then I might come back for more Jimmy and then come back to you.
But tell us why you went with Jimi Hendrix.
Well, as a child, I would sort through my father's records,
and there was one, there was a Jimi Hendrix experience,
and I put it on, and I heard this song,
and my eyes were wide open,
and I'm like, oh my, the guitar lick at the beginning?
In itself, it just had so much visceral energy,
and then I just listened to the lyrics um they're a storytelling
a beautiful storytelling without having being so didactic and it was poetic well that's that's uh
of course that's uh bob dylan yeah it's bob dylan who wrote the lyrics yeah and he covered it and
he made it a better yeah he is he's my favorite actually but i gotta introduce
you to fotm lauren honickman who uh what i mean there's a lot of big dylan fans it's like saying
i'm a neil young fan it's like okay join the club yeah yeah but uh man does he love his bob dylan
and this song is well i mean bob dylan's one of those guys where the covers of his songs are often
better than his versions because but man when i hear this this song, I'm like I'm having flashbacks to Vietnam
and I wasn't around.
I know.
It has that effect.
Like again, it's like out of Apocalypse Now.
It's just, it encompasses that time period
and just the whole, the sound,
the sonic output of the guitar.
It's singing to you.
Like all of this guitar is just amazing.
Okay, well, let's bring it up a bit here
because the next song is going to be completely different.
Here we go.
Beautiful.
So you're a young boy, you find this album I had the same experience with Hot Rocks
I remember discovering Hot Rocks in my parents' vinyl collection
When I was really young
And it was the song Painted Black
Oh, yeah
I'm like, whoa
So same story, really
It's like you discover this music from before you were born
And then it suddenly opens up all these doors.
And I say the word doors because I can now reveal to the FOTMs listening
that you had a door song on your list that got cut at the last minute.
Which door song?
It was called Break on Through to the Other Side.
Try to run, try to hide.
Break on through to the other side.
But it didn't quite make your cut, but this song did.
It did.
It was between that one and this one.
And again, that one has beautiful poetry in it,
as Jim Morrison was a poet as well.
But nothing beats this.
Nothing beats this with a little can of cabana.
Am I right, Brock?
Yeah, and a little can of cabana.
Come on, man.
That's a good Saturday night for me.
Now I'm going to check in on Lisa to see if she's
with us. Okay, there she is. Okay, so Lisa,
this jam of yours has a long
build-up, so you could probably go for a little
fun run and then come back here. But
hang in there, because once we get to that
beefy part here, which we'll probably
be singing along to, we're going to come and find out
why you chose this jam. Here we
go.
Oh, okay.
I'm going for a quick bike ride.
I'll be right back.
Speaking of great covers.
Just like yours.
Great cover.
You're right.
Dolly Parton.
Dolly Parton, absolutely.
Look, we're talking over the intro.
How rude of us.
Every step of the way.
Yeah.
And I Will always
Love you
Are you crying there?
I'm getting a little emotional here.
It is beautiful.
Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
We lost Whitney.
She's just warming up here.
Yeah.
My darling you.
Bittersweet
memories. Sing along to it. Come on, Brock. Bittersweet memories
Sing along to it. Come on, Brock.
That is all I'm taking with me
So goodbye
She's a little out of my range.
We better leave this to Lisa here.
Hold on, we're not there yet.
We both know I'm not what you need.
And I will always love you.
I will always love you
Holy smokes, Lisa.
Can you hit that note?
I mean, at this present moment, no, but yes.
Wow.
You've been carrying this broccoli character
on your back all this time,
on your shoulders there.
But tell me why you chose this wonderful cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You by the late, great Whitney Houston.
Honestly, the moment this song came on, I was like, this is, like any listener would be jamming to it.
Because it was such a pivotal part in time.
Like, it was like, anyone can remember
kind of loving this song and this anthem
that I feel like played such a big part in people's lives.
Yeah.
Monster hit, and it was played everywhere.
And, yeah, you couldn't help but sing along, right?
Even now, Brock and I are singing along here.
Hold on.
Here we are.
Here's the key change, I think.
Here we are.
Woo!
Wow.
You know, Lisa, I did notice, okay, you wrote, you kicked out Wind Beneath My,
You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings and now I Will Always Love You.
Both of these songs you're dedicating to your partner here, Broccoli, right?
Obviously.
It was as if Whitney wrote them and Bette wrote them for Broccoli.
Yeah.
She's speaking to me.
But of course,
you're happily married
with your two children.
Do you ever,
what's that dynamic like?
You have your romantic partner
and you have your musical partner
and never the two shall mix.
Brock's my work husband.
Yeah, exactly.
So Brock,
he got friend zoned early.
Is that correct?
Brock has been,
we have been friends for almost 25 years.
So, you know, when I got married, I think Brock said in his speech, like, we've disappointed a lot of kids.
Yeah.
Over the years.
Well, you know why?
Because we talked about Splashin' Boots earlier.
And, of course, at some point, they were actually a husband and wife.
Yeah.
And they, and I give them so much.
I think that they, you know, made the right choice for their lives and what worked for them.
And also, like, shared it with their community, which I think is, like, really brave to do.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
And brave reminds me of the great new album from Sunshine and Broccoli.
What's it called again?
Born to be Brave.
Born to be Brave.
So good for you.
Now I'm going to kick out the second jam from Broccoli.
Love it, bro.
Oh, yeah.
Love it.
Know this one?
Are you kidding me?
I'm all over Alice in Chains.
Do I know this one?
Get out of my basement.
This song actually has the word sunshine in it, if you listen.
Hey.
Let's listen to the late, great Lane Staley.
Yeah, amazing.
Amazing harmonies.
Oh, yeah.
Cheers. Alright, there comes a time
Got no patience to search for peace of mind
Laying low, wanna take it slow
No more hiding or disguising truths I've sold Hit it!
Me sitting by myself No excuses that I know
Right in my wheelhouse, Broccoli.
Oh.
You've earned that lasagna, brother.
Thank you, thank you.
All right, so the harmony,
I mean, it's your jam,
I should shut up,
but Jerry Cantrell and Lane Staley
were shout-out to Ridley Funeral Home.
Tell me why you chose No Excuses.
Well, my best friend at the time in high school,
my friend Jesse Carlson,
we were in an Alice in Chains tribute band.
Really?
Yes.
But we fell in love with this song specifically
for its harmonies and its words.
We kind of resonated with that at the time.
Again, I was in high school during this grunge period. Right, because you're much younger than me with that at the time. Again, it was at, I was
in high school during this grunge period. Right. Cause you're much younger than me. I must remember
that. Oh yes. Oh yeah. I guess you are a little older than me. Oh, I'm a lot older than you.
I'll tell you. Do you remember the seventies? Um, no. So no, apparently I guess you do. So,
uh, I have memories of the seventies. So, uh, but that's good that you're still able to understand this music,
even if you're older.
Just to get broad.
Okay, now you've offended me.
Okay, so what are we in here?
94?
This is the Jar of Flies EP.
Jar of Flies.
Yeah, 1994.
Because I feel like, yeah, okay, so just so everybody knows,
I'm literally 19 years old when I buy this CD.
So I'm not exactly over the hill.
19 years old.
Oh, okay.
You're 19 years old.
You're not that much older at all.
Well, I said you remember the 70s.
I didn't say I remember 1971.
Okay?
I have faint memories of 1979.
I just made you literally feel like you were 100.
Which is fine because as you can see, Lisa,
my pigmentation has left me long ago.
But I am holding on to the actual hair itself.
You've got a ton of hair.
You've got great.
It's just changed its color over the years.
But what do you think?
I know you were in the tribute band,
but I will tell you, I went through a period of time where I played Dirt on repeat for months at a time.
And I liked how it was kind of dark and plotted along.
And I adored the guitar work.
I love the harmonies you're talking about.
Amazing.
So I'm just so excited that you kicked out some Alice in Chains here.
We need something to offset the Whitney Houston and Bette Midler.
Yeah, I thought.
I know.
I feel like you guys are like so aligned.
You're like, yeah like yeah brother I love this
I was 19 before
I'm no no no
and you're like
oh okay
what's next on sunshine
well let me tease it though
as we wind down this jam
let me tease it by saying
I think
your third jam Lisa
is a song nobody
could say a negative word about
this is just some
beautiful music we're about to hear.
But any final words from you, Brock,
on No Excuses before we go into Lisa's third jam?
If anyone hasn't heard of Alice in Chains
or hasn't been in their wheelhouse, please...
Then stop living under that rock.
Yes, listen to them because they have explored
some of the best harmonies ever released in rock music. So if anyone listening
has not heard of Alice in Chains, it means
that they're here for you guys
and they're not Toronto Mike listeners because I don't
think there's a single Toronto Mike listener who's
would be unfamiliar with Alice in Chains
because we kick them out often here.
But okay. And I love the fact that like in the
background, Lisa's got mothering going
on and I sometimes hear like maybe there's
phone calls happening. Who knows? I love it. Adds to the ambience. Here's Lisa's got mothering going on and I sometimes hear like maybe there's phone calls happening. Who knows?
I love it. Adds to the ambiance. Here's
Lisa's third jam.
Oh, okay.
You ever heard of this band? I think I have.
I think I do now.
Did we pass the audition?
Did we pass the audition?
I hope so.
When I find myself in times
of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me.
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me.
Beautiful.
It is.
Would you like to slow dance?
Let it be.
Excuse us, Lisa.
I'm going to be right back.
Oregon in there.
Beautiful.
Billy Preston in there?
Yeah.
Billy Preston in there?
Yeah.
I don't even want to fade it down.
I want to listen to it.
That's beautiful.
The bass comes in there.
Let it be. Let it be. Let it be.
Let it be.
Let it be.
Let it be.
Let it be.
Yeah, there will be an answer.
Let it be.
It feels sacrilegious for me to be fading this down,
but I want to hear Lisa. Lisa, why Let It Be by some Liverpoolian band,
The Beatles?
I love singing this song,
and I think it's a song that so many people can resonate with.
So it's not necessarily that I'm like,
oh, I resonate with the Beatles singing this song.
I love people covering this song.
I think this song plays such a huge role in people's lives.
I don't know.
It just was something that I thought, okay, I'm not going to totally give every sappy song that I think is amazing.
I got to mix it up and make sure you guys approve.
Well,
firstly,
we approve of all your jams because your jams are your jams and we want you to
be purely Lisa sunshine.
We'd accept nothing less.
Okay.
Secondly is,
uh,
what a great song.
I chose the remastered version.
They,
the rematch,
I think it's a Giles.
I want to got Giles.
So the original producer...
Phil Spector.
No, no.
Well, he did the album.
He produced Let It Be, the album.
That's true.
You're right.
So this is Let It Be.
You're right.
In fact, yeah, there's a stripped down version of Let It Be, I think, without the Spectorisms.
Because Spector's a bad, bad dude.
But he did do some great stuff.
Yeah, Wall of Sound.
Yeah.
We have a girl group.
By the way,
go to the Toast episode on girl groups
because I kick out the Ronettes
and I kind of tell the story
of the Ronettes
influencing the Beach Boys
and Brian Wilson was obsessed
with Be My Baby
by the Ronettes
and there's a great story there.
Okay, so back to the Beatles
here for a minute though.
Did you know Lisa,
so you're children's entertainers,
Broccoli and Sunshine,
Sunshine and Broccoli. Did you ever consider calling it Broccoli and Sunshine's entertainers, broccoli and sunshine and broccoli.
Did you ever consider calling it broccoli and sunshine?
No, I hate when people say broccoli and sunshine.
I know.
I correct them all the time.
I'm like, sunshine and broccoli.
Get it right, okay?
It's not, you know, it's not Ebert and Siskel.
Yeah, exactly.
And it's not, so now speaking of great duos,
there's Ernie and Bert, okay?
Yes.
Also two characters from It's a Wonderful Life.
That's the name of the taxi cab driver
and the police officer.
That's Ernie and Bert.
Oh.
Just, you know, okay.
I didn't know that.
So why am I talking about Sesame Street?
Because, well, that was for children as well.
But the guy who writes the music for Sesame Street
wrote a song called Letter B.
Letter B.
Letter B. Okay? About the letter
B. And it was
pretty close to Let It Be. And they got, I
believe, I was on the documentary, that
they did receive
a note from the lawyers. The Beatles,
Apple Records or whatever, sent a legal
letter. That's not cool.
Too close for comfort, basically.
Was it?
I think I've heard that song, Letter B.
Letter B.
Letter B, yeah.
Oh, about the letter B.
About the letter B.
Now I get it.
It's hard to say it.
Sorry, I meant like a B.
Lisa, can you explain to Broccoli the letter B?
Not let it be, letter B.
Like A, B, C.
I think you're better explaining things to Broccoli.
All right, on that note, I'm going to better explaining things to Broccoli. Alright, on that note,
I'm going to get myself to another
Broccoli jam here because he's
ready to lose it over here, Lisa.
Before he loses it,
let's kick out his third jam.
I think he's going to fight me after this song.
This is my pump-up jam.
I'm pumped up already.
I used to
listen to this before some Sunshine and Broccoli shows just to pump me up.
I want to hear that story.
Here it comes.
Nice piano intro too.
Yeah.
Coming too early.
Look. Coming too early Look If you had
One shot
One opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted
One moment
Would you capture it
Or just let it slip
Yo
His palms are sweaty
Knees weak
Arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already
Mom's spaghetti
He's nervous
But on the surface
He looks calm and ready
To drop bombs
But he keeps on forgetting
What he wrote down
The whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth
But the words won't come out
He's choking how
Everybody's choking now the clock's run out He knows that, but he's broke, he's so stagged that he knows When he goes back to this mobile home, that's when it's back to the lab again, yo
This old rhapsody better go capture this moment and hope it don't die
You better lose yourself in the music the moment you own it
You better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime
You better lose yourself in the music the moment you own it You better never let it go You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow What's your heart rate at right now, Brock?
Oh, my BPM?
It's like 198.
Okay, now let me find out.
Lisa, has your heart rate increased at all during this song?
I literally, all I could think about was my spin class that I used to take.
Because when I heard this song, it's like, you know when they make you stand up and you're just like,
I love it.
Good choice.
Great choice.
So Brock, before, okay, so let's say Sunshine and Broccoli are playing, I don't know, to a crowd of young children,
excited to be there.
And you're behind the curtain, like the Wizard of Oz again,
and you're behind the curtain. You're about to
go on stage. Are you
singing this song in your head, or is it
literally blasting out of a boombox?
Well, I've done
both before, but I've
sung it to myself, just because it
always secured me.
It pumped me up.
It's a pump-up song. It's all in all in the lyrics i mean he's a wordsmith i even used some of his ideas even for sunshine
and broccoli the internal rhyming like he's just so complex and just this song is just one thing
that embodies like if you want to pump yourself up and if you want to get off your high horse
and get going on the day put this song on
because it'll it'll get you going pretty sure this is the first rap song to win the uh the oscar for
best uh song from a movie it is it is it is it was before um the other one the three uh yeah
heart out here yeah which is another great game you ever sing that one before uh sunshine
Heart Out Here for a Pimp.
Yeah.
Which is another great jam.
Did you ever sing that one before Sunshine and Brock?
You know it's heart out here for a pimp.
Yeah.
It's the whole jersey.
Okay.
What more can we say except I think this song is having like an anniversary.
Like I think this song is now 20 years old.
Wow. Could that be possible?
Wow.
Maybe.
That really ages it.
But it's still so relevant as it was back then.
Great song. So you love this song.
This is one of your jams. Lisa,
what do you think so far of
Broccoli's jams?
They align exactly with Broccoli.
Like, nothing
shocks me off that list, but it's a good list.
Okay, now the same question.
Broccoli, what do you think so far?
Because we're three jams deep. There's only two to go
from each of you. What do you think so far? Because we're three jams deep. There's only two to go from each of you. What do you think
so far of Lisa's
jams? I love Lisa's jams. Listen,
I'm a huge fan of music in general
and especially
Bette Midler and then you throw
in Whitney Houston.
Beautiful. And then the Beatles, Let It Be.
I love all those songs, actually.
Well, I like
two of them and I love one of them
you notice he had to temper that
at the end he doesn't want the word to get out what a big
Bette Midler fan is
I was like who did
he's like you know when you walk it back
politicians walk that statement back
or whatever Brock's like well
I like that one
no they're all amazing.
Like, they're amazing artists.
Lisa, your second, I'll call this your penultimate jam,
we're about to kick it out,
is also one of my wife's favorite songs of all time.
So now I think in my mind, I think you're similar ages.
That's how young you are.
You're both similar ages, and I think that this song might have hit you at a similar time.
But why would I guess your story when you're here to tell me your story?
But first, let's kick it.
Oh, I like how the coffee...
Yeah, I know.
Oh.
Hey. That's sporty spice.
That's baby spice.
Yeah.
Scary.
Posh, right?
Or no ginger.
I don't know.
We'll find out. Get your act together We could catch you fine I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna
I wanna really, really, really wanna
Because it's fine
If you wanna be my lover
You gotta get with my friends
Make it last forever
Friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover
You have got to give.
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is.
What you think about that?
Now you know how.
Shout out to Sporty Spice.
I always thought she was the best singer in Spice Girls.
But let's hear from Lisa Sunshine.
What do you love about this Spice Girls jam?
You know, I was thinking about it while you played it.
I think, you know, when you're like me and your wife,
I think anybody, like my list is more, I think, nostalgic.
I think it's more just like when you hear this kind of song,
what does it do to your innards?
And I think all of us, when you hear this song,
just want to get up and pump it out and it's a feel good happy is it
the best song of all time absolutely not but i think my list is more nostalgic it's like
anyone hears something they're like yes but that's so true of music right like the music you loved
and again i'm gonna assume you're about my wife's age and then maybe you're you're you're i don't
know teenager into music and then spice girls put this one out you see it on much to assume you're about my wife's age. And then maybe you're, you're, I don't know, teenager into music.
And then Spice Girls put this one out and you see it on Much Music.
And you're talking about the Spice Girls and it hits you like at the right time.
You're going to carry it forever.
Like you're going to be on your deathbed in like 85 years.
And you're going to like have a smile on your face listening to Wannabe by the Spice Girls.
It's also one of those songs that even the kids now know,
you know, like if you come to a those songs that even the kids now know. You know?
Sure, yeah.
Like, if you come to a Saturday party,
even the little ones know it.
So I think it's like, you know,
is it the best song of all time?
I mean, it's a party song.
And what does that mean, best song?
Like, art is subjective, right?
Right.
Like, this is the best,
one of the best songs for Lisa Sunshine.
Agreed. Thank you. Thank you. True. And at the very beginning, right like this is the best one of the best songs for lisa sunshine agree thank you thank you
and at the very beginning they have that you know the footsteps part before it kicks in
and then i think one of your kids did a great cough right in that that was cute that gap it
was very cute i also think my songs too are like high vibing songs. So like if I'm in the car and I need to like
high vibe, like lift up the
vibration, if you put
wannabe on, like tell me that doesn't
lift up your spirits.
See, I had my heart rate going after Lose Yourself
but after wannabe,
I'm ready to run through this wall right here.
Yeah.
Yeah, I can see it in your
face. They say it's cool to be kind
but that doesn't mean I'm a pushover
Brock's list is like
fully Brock as a teenager
and like hardcore
okay
so this jam from Brock
I'm going to kick out right now his penultimate jam
was a late breaking addition
and it's basically the addition
of this song prevents me
from saying I loved all of Brock's jams.
So I'm just prefacing it.
I can't wait to get into it with him now that I'm all
pumped up. But here is
Brock Lee's penultimate
jam. This Romeo is bleeding
But you can't see his blood
It's nothing but some feelings
That this old dog kicked up
It's been raining since you left me
Now I'm drowning in the flood
You see, I've always been a fighter
But without you, I give up
Now I can't sing a love song fighter, but without you I give up.
I can't sing a love song like the way it's meant to be.
Well, I guess
I'm not that good anymore.
But baby,
that's just me.
Yeah, I
will love
you.
Sing it, Brock.
Baby. I will love you, baby.
Always and I'll be there forever and a day.
Always.
Only I'll be there till the stars don't shine
Till the heavens burst and the words don't rhyme
I know when I die you'll be on my mind
And I'll love you
Only
Don't worry, Brock.
Jon Bon Jovi can't hit that note anymore either.
Yeah, I know.
I think he has to lower the song live.
Also, again, your jam, but isn't this the same song as
I'll be there for you.
These five words I swear to you.
Aren't they the same song?
It sounds very similar, and it could be.
Tell us why you love this song.
So fun fact for this,
Sunshine sung this at my wedding.
This was my wedding song.
But I've always loved it
and I'm not afraid to say it.
Okay, congratulations on the wedding.
I feel like you were engaged.
That's why you couldn't come to a TMLX event.
Yes, it was.
Yeah, I was.
Not a good excuse, Brock.
I know.
I'm sorry for missing that.
I should have made a better choice.
But no, honestly, this song, I love Bon Jovi.
I do.
And I'm not afraid to say it.
No, own it, man.
Yeah, I'm owning it.
And I just think it's a beautiful love song.
It's a nice lament.
And the words are gorgeous.
And I think the melody is stunning.
And when Lisa sang it at my wedding, I teared up.
I couldn't help it.
It was beautiful.
You're not the first man that cried
with him.
Never mind. Okay.
Bon Jovi, terrible
band. Like, terrible, terrible, terrible band.
But, but, but, but, but, art is
subjective. So who cares what I
think? True, true. No, no, no.
I know a lot of my friends don't like Bon Jovi.
They think he's cheese.
But listen what he's accomplished.
But I like cheese.
This is just stinky cheese.
Oh, ouch.
Lisa, I wish I could hear you sing this song.
I bet you it would change my mind on it.
I am shook with Brock's choice.
That threw me off beat.
That totally threw me off.
So is that for Lisa? Is that like a little
love for Lisa
kicking out this time? Well, it is a bit love for Lisa
because she did sing this at my wedding.
She sang it beautifully too. A bit of a
different version. But honestly,
I love pop music
and this is a great pop
song. Subjectively
for me. Brock, was there ever a moment
in your friendship with
lisa where you wish you were not in the friend zone you'd say let me out of the friend zone
well it's hard because lisa and i were like brother and sister so that would be like a little
you know yeah but you're not
like is different okay i'm just trying to cause a little controversy. Now, Lisa,
happily married to somebody else.
Broccoli,
married to somebody else.
You two are not a couple,
but I do spend a lot of time with Dean McDermott
and Mary Jo Eustace
who were married
and then they broke up
and had a bad divorce
and now they're friends.
So I sense a similar chemistry.
You two are dear friends
and it's beautiful.
No, it really is.
I could never...
She's a kindred spirit and
we just compliment each other
in so many ways. So you can't see her. I should just tell
the listenership that I can see Lisa Sunshine.
Brock can't.
Brock can only hear Lisa
just the way we're set up over here.
I want to hog her all to myself
here. You're lucky.
Lucky guy.
Sorry, was there someone else? Yeah, shout all to myself here. You're lucky. Lucky guy. Sorry.
Is there someone else?
Okay.
Yeah.
Shout out to Lisa Sunshine.
Doing a great job over there.
Okay.
Bon Jovi.
Who cares that I don't like that song?
These aren't my jams.
I can kick out my own jams.
These are Broccoli's jams.
And you're a happy man hearing that song.
And hearing that story of Lisa singing this at your wedding warms my heart.
And almost enough to make me like this song because that's such a beautiful story.
I might convert you by the end of the song.
Now, I have a question.
So all I got from, like, I'm hoping I have the next song right because Lisa gave me an artist, one artist, and then a one word.
And I decided she meant a duet where that word is in the title.
So you hear what I'm saying here?
So I'm going to play this as if this is Lisa Sunshine's jam.
And then when I fade it down, she can say, Mike, you idiot.
That's not my song at all.
Okay, so this will be fun too because I've messed it up before.
Here is what I think might be lisa sunshine's final jam
in all then there's a glimpse of stalking was looked down at something shocking no heaven no
hold on i think i have the wrong song hold on anything. Anything goes. Lisa, I can tell by, is this the right song or no?
I don't even know.
Okay, okay.
So let me explain myself.
I said the artist,
and I said anything.
So, okay.
Anything from the artist.
Oh, you know what?
Oh my God.
Anything goes.
That's the way you say that?
Okay.
Lisa, this is what I got.
Lady Gaga, anything. So that's what i have i guess i could
have reached out but i'm like okay she means lady gaga has a great duet with tony bennett called
anything goes we're hearing it now that's the that's her let's go with it okay so let's listen
to a bit more okay so any great show. Okay, so,
what do you mean anything?
Can't you just pick a song?
I don't want that pressure.
Tell us why you love Lady Gaga.
I think Lady Gaga truly is magnificent.
I think that,
you know,
when I first heard Lady Gaga,
everyone's like,
Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga.
Like, I love an amazing voice.
Like, vocally, I, as a singer,
love a, like, soulful, like, shiver kind of voice.
And Lady Gaga's first few albums,
I can't say that I really felt like that
until I heard her do a ballad live.
I went to her show.
Which ballad?
I don't even remember. Because that's the song you should have given me. I should have. I went to her show. Which ballad? I don't even remember.
Because that's the song you should have given me.
I should have.
I should have.
By the end of my list, I was frustrated.
And I just wanted to be done with my list.
Okay.
So anyways, Lady Gaga, I think, is just simply brilliant.
Do your kids like Lady Gaga?
You know, she's named after a Queen song.
Yeah.
Goo Goo Gaga.
What's that one?
Radio Gaga.
Radio Gaga.
Yeah.
And her real name is Stephanie Germotta, I believe.
Oh, I didn't know that.
She would probably enjoy the palm of pasta here.
Okay.
I think she's a really cool broad.
And I think that the way she's kind of built her following for people who just
like, feel a little bit different or feel she's really, you know, I just went to her concert
when she was in Toronto. I mean, you're a mom, you're a monster, a little monster. Exactly.
Amazing. I think it's amazing, Lisa, that you were able to kick out these jams and talk about Born to be Brave, even though you're mommy-ing and the kids need you.
So, you know, obviously, I'd love to say goodbye to you after I do the final jam here for Brock.
But if you had to go now, you've served your tour of duty here, right?
Shout out to Vianna.
I have to say, you know, life here, right? Shout out to Vietnam. I have to say, you know,
life happens, right? And we all,
most of us who have kids know that we
just got to roll with the punches. So thank you
Mike for letting me roll with the punches.
Okay, Lisa Sunshine, one day I'm going to meet
you in the flesh. If it's not
TMLX 11 on December 3rd, then I'll just
start counting the days till we can make it happen.
No, I'm coming on the 3rd. Can I bring my kids?
Yeah, it's very kid-friendly.
Okay, we're coming. December 3rd. Say bye-bye.
There he is. Bye.
Bye, Zade.
There it goes. Lisa
Sunshine and her beautiful
family kicked out her final jam.
I think it's because she said
Lady Gaga anything. I did
kick out a Lady Gaga jam because that is Lady Gaga with Tony Bennett.
Yeah, that was actually really good.
She's also done music with Metallica, for goodness sake.
She's so versatile.
We talked about art, you know, and she's an artist, right?
Like you could tell like she's a true artist and the little monsters adore her
and Lisa's a little monster.
But we have one more jam to go
and unfortunately Lisa's not here to hear it.
But it's different
and there's a million versions of this, as you know.
So I picked a version.
I just made an editorial decision.
And just like I did with that jam,
when you're kicking out the jams,
you can't put artist name anything.
You need to finish that sentence and say,
you can pick anything from this art like i need more than anything considering she has a song that's a
popular you know recent song called anything goes like i just thought she forgot the word goes
hilarious because that's not the sunshine style of music that's why i was like yeah well i was
kind of shocked that's why i was you can't see her, but Lisa was doing a whole like,
what is this?
And I knew right away I had screwed up.
Okay.
But you can tell me after I play a bit of this,
whether I screwed up again,
but here is your final jam broccoli.
Sure thing.
Yes,
it is.
You know,
there's only a million versions of this.
Thanks for being so specific.
You could have linked me to YouTube and say, I like this version.
I like this.
Well, then Beethoven's original, whichever cover is.
I'm old enough to remember when seeing Beethoven live at the Ontario Place Forum.
Oh, are you serious?
You saw him live.
Wow.
That's impressive.
You also, I think you sat behind Jesus in class.
All right, we'll get a little taste of this
before we find out what's got you so cultured
and awesome here.
So what's the name of this Beethoven jam?
This is called Moonlight Sonata.
And it's just one of my favorite songs if I need to relax if I need to
focus it grounds me and it has movements just like any other song see there it goes to major to a
minor and subtle so you know your music I listen you talk about music you talk about it from like a
musician's perspective of the structure and and where some guys like me just,
oh, it's got a good beat and I can dance to it.
Exactly.
This one doesn't necessarily have a beat.
I could dance to this. You could.
But not the way I dance,
which is banging my head up and down.
Yeah, that would look a little strange, I think.
It smells like teen spirit.
Yeah, like a mosh pit for Beethoven.
Oh, man.
I used to go to the strange paradise of the Phoenix every Monday night.
And multiple times the bouncers kicked me out for moshing.
Oh, really?
Early 90s was the time, man.
You missed it.
Oh, I loved moshing.
I was a mosher.
Not to this song, obviously.
Imagine moshing to this song.
So, like, were you schooled in music?
Where were you?
Is it just that
your your dad would play Beethoven at dinner time like what's going on here no during my time at
Sheridan College we were introduced to a lot of piano and classical music and I I just I fell in
love with classical music Chopin um you know just um John Sebastian. And I love playing it on guitar. And it's one thing that... Oh, yeah, he's the lead singer for Skid Row, right?
Oh, yeah, that's the...
Yeah, JSB.
Yeah, Skid Row.
I don't like a thing about your sister.
Oh, I was going to go...
I remember you
Through all the sleepless nights
Oh, yeah, nice.
And all the endless days
I want to hear you say I remember you Oh yeah, nice Also 18 and Life
Yeah, yeah
The other big one I remember from that album
Because I had that album
I had that CD
We are the youth gone wild
We are the problem child
We spend our life on trial
We'll walk that endless mile
We are the youth
gone wild. Oh, very
good. Look at that. Mike can sing, guys.
You mentioned Sebastian. Can I jump
on stage if you guys want? Yeah, of
course. No, no. We'll have a special guest singer.
I know Elise is being nice because she's a sweet person,
but are you guys really... Can I tell the
FOTMs that Sunshine and Broccoli
are going to make an appearance at TMLX 11?
We're committed to it 100%.
We're going to be there.
So now that I have Sunshine,
Broccoli, and Peter
Gross, I'm set.
That's it. That's all you need, right?
And Tim, I don't know if Tim,
he said he might have a conflict, but anyway,
if Paul Burford comes, but you know,
cancel your plans. Be at TMLX11.
That's for all FOTMs.
Thank you for making this show
a little more cultured
with the Beethoven, you know.
It's good that we can kick out
Spice Girls and Beethoven
in the same show.
Exactly.
Why not?
I mean, all of its music,
as you said,
art is subjective
and art is part of our culture.
So.
Sixth album.
It is called Born to be Brave.
Available right now.
What is the website?
Do you guys have a website?
Yeah, www.sunshineandbroccoli.com.
You don't have to say that part anymore.
Oh, okay.
Sunshine and Broccoli.
It's just sunshineandbroccoli.com.
And yeah, all of our information for the new album is there.
It's amazing.
Our title song, Born to be Brave, was actually written with the youngest Juno Award winner
of all time.
Who's that?
His name's Cairo McClain.
Oh.
And he won Best Reggae Artist last year.
And it was also written with multi-Juno Award winner uh, Kurt diamond, who is a huge in the,
um,
a reggae scene.
So it's a reggae song.
Okay.
Yeah.
It's really,
really good.
And,
um,
and again,
I met him through,
I was at a doctor's appointment with my dad and the receptionist overheard us talking about music.
And she's like,
my son was just nominated for a Juno award.
Do you know what I can do?
I'm like,
uh, yeah, I'll, I'll talk to you you so i talked with her for about half an hour my dad went in the appointment i didn't even go in with him and when he came out i was still talking with
her and um yeah it was it was such an amazing organic cultivation of a relationship and we've
done many shows with him since i'd be remiss if I let you go without getting an update
on the animated children's television show
based on the rockin' adventures of Sunshine and Broccoli.
Yes, we are currently still in the works of that
because we've had to pivot and manipulate a bit over COVID
because COVID obviously took people out at the knees.
So we had to switch gears a bit and focus more on an album
because we received a grant from the Ontario Arts Council
for making an album.
And we're like, oh, well, we have a grant.
Now let's force to make some music.
And Necessity is the mother of invention.
Frank Zappa.
Oh, there you go. Frank Zappa. Oh, there you go.
Frank Zappa.
Yes.
Mother of inventions.
Good one.
See what I'm doing here.
I love Zappa.
Yeah.
You're very clever.
You're very good at that.
I was just waiting for you to say that.
I was very clever.
Now we can actually conclude the conversation.
But, Broccoli, you know, love it.
Thanks again for this amazing sweatshirt you dropped by after your first appearance.
I do love this sweatshirt.
And I believe it's true.
It's cool to be kind.
Thank you.
And thank you so much for having us again.
And for continuing to wear the sweatshirt even though you're sweating bullets.
I'll do anything for you, man.
You know that.
And I want to thank your partner, Lisa Sunshine.
That, you know, yeah, she was supposed to be down here with you.
She would have left with a lasagna from Palma Pasta.
But she didn't bail.
She didn't Buffy. She
zoomed in, and even though I could see her
kids were crawling all over her, and Peppa Pig
only kind of keeps your attention for 15 minutes,
she pulled through. She
chatted us up about her five jams. She did a
great job. So, thank you,
Lisa Sunshine.
Thank you. And did a great job. So thank you, Lisa Sunshine. Thank you.
And buy that great album, Born to be Brave.
All parents of children between the ages of 2 and 10,
you have your orders.
And that brings us to the end of our 1,152nd show.
You can follow me on Twitter.
I'm at Toronto Mike.
Now, I know you guys are at SB Music,
but is there somewhere else you'd rather send people
on social media, like your Instagram maybe?
Instagram would be, yeah.
Look for Sunshine and Broccoli on Instagram
and follow all our upcoming shows
and all our information is on there.
You know, for 10 years, I've been telling people
how they can follow us all on Twitter.
And as we speak,
uh,
Twitter seems to be imploding.
So at some point I might have to pivot and change that up,
but,
uh,
I'm still there at Toronto Mike and,
our friends at Great Lakes brewery or at Great Lakes beer,
Palma pasta is at Palma pasta.
Sticker you is that sticker you.

See you all next week for another episode of Toast. That's Monday with Stu Stone and Cam Gordon. Everything is rosy and green Well, I've been told that there's a sucker born every day
But I wonder who
Yeah, I wonder who
Maybe the one who doesn't realize
There's a thousand shades of green
Cause I know that's true, yes I do
I know it's true, yeah
I know it's true
How about you?
Oh, they're picking up trash and they're putting down ropes
And they're brokering stocks, the class struggle explodes And I'll play this guitar just the best that I can
Maybe I'm not and maybe I am
But who gives a damn?
Because everything is coming up rosy and gray
Yeah, the wind is cold
but the smell of snow
warms me today
And your smile is fine
and it's just like mine
and it won't go away
Cause everything is
rosy and gray
Well, I've kissed you in France
and I've kissed you in France and I've kissed you in Spain
And I've kissed you in places I better not name
And I've seen the sun go down on Chaclacour
But I like it much better going down on you
Yeah you know that's true.
Because everything is coming up rosy and green.
Yeah, the wind is cold, but the smell of snow warms us today.
And your smile is fine, and it's just like mine.
And it won't go away.
Because everything is rosy now
Everything is rosy, yeah
Everything is rosy and great Thank you.
