Welcome to episode 261 of Toronto Mike's
A weekly podcast about anything and everything
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery
A local and independent brewery producing fresh craft beer and property
in the six dot com Toronto real estate done right. I'm Mike from Toronto Mike dot com
and joining me to kick out the jams is broadcaster Sofia Yurskovich. Very close. Oh, crap. What did I get wrong?
No, say it again.
Sofia Yurskovich.
There's a T in there that most people miss.
It's Yurk Stovich.
Yurk Stovich.
Perfect.
I missed the T.
The T is silent.
It's tough.
I was practicing.
I got it right. I think I got it I was practicing. I got it right.
I think I got it right last time.
I can't remember.
But I just had Jay on right on.
And he was so impressed with how I said on right.
Because I guess a lot of people butcher that somehow.
Because a T should be silent.
Speaking of silent T's.
Wait.
It should be or it shouldn't be?
Well, that's a French name where it's like on ray.
Yeah.
See, I would say on ray. But I think that's wrong then. Is that what you're saying? That's wrong. Right.
So what's correct is Jay Henri. Well, when I meet him one day, I'll make sure to nail that.
Well, I'm not going to give any specifics, but I just learned you moved to the almost exact same
spot where he just moved. You know what that means? I'm going to be stalking him now. I'm
literally going to be riding around on my bike
with binoculars
and looking for where he lives.
He should be so lucky, Sophia.
It sounds like he's half a block away
from where I live.
Yeah, I mean,
that's a popular intersection
in the city.
See how vague we're being?
But absolutely,
when I found out,
I remember you lived
near the old mill.
Yes.
I don't even know if...
So that's where you lived.
And I thought that's where you were biking from,
which we'll get into in a minute.
But then I learned you actually have moved
and you didn't send me a I've moved notice.
I didn't.
I'm sorry.
I forgot.
Do we do that?
Do people do that now?
Like send I moved party and send some mail
or cards in the mail rather?
Do you get any Christmas cards in the snail mail?
Yes. or cards in the mail rather do you get any christmas cards in the snail mail uh yes one family that i love with all my heart frank and brianna friends of my ex-boyfriend
not awkward though because i'm very good friends with my ex marty um him and i are
great friends still we dated like 10 years ago uh anyway frank and brie they
still send christmas cards of their pictures of the their kids who i love and they're the only
people that send cards so yes when you would uh call marty's name did you ever like channel the
the science scientist guy doc from uh back to the future like marty the time. He loved Back to the Future too.
So his name is,
actually I don't want to give his last name away.
Marty McSomething.
It is Marty McSomething.
And so we would just,
like Marty McFly,
it's just hilarious.
So Marty, what up?
What up, Marty?
I'm sure he's listening.
I'm going to send this to him.
You should.
This is not one of your jams,
but it should have been.
Why wasn't it one of your jams?
Good question.
I should have channeled some bike jams.
A lot of good jams will be left off a list of 10.
I mean, there's so many great jams.
It must have been tough.
Tell me how tough it was to get your list down to 10.
Very, very, very hard.
But I'm very happy with it.
Other than the Drake selection, I...
No spoilers.
Oh.
That's okay. I won't censor Drake selection. Why? No spoilers. Oh. That's okay.
I won't censor that out.
We'll leave it.
Shoot.
Wait, was I supposed to send them in a particular order?
Because they aren't.
They're not best to first to last.
Oh, snap.
Oh, I fail.
The order you sent them to me is...
I know.
Now I'm trying to think.
Here, what if I did this?
No.
I can't do anything while I'm playing the song because it'll be too abrupt.
After I stop my Queen, I might pause and then get your order and then come back.
No, but I can't give you one. I can't give you an order. That's the problem.
Okay. Well, the order you sent it to me in is the order I put them in.
That's great. That's fine. I just want the audience to know that they're not in a particular order.
I couldn't choose one over the other.
But is there one of these tracks
you wanted me to close with?
Psy.
Let me think.
And if it is, don't say the name of the track.
Okay.
Talking Code.
That's hard.
That is hard.
We could see each other,
so maybe I'll give you a wink or something.
You can text me and I'll check my phone. You know what uh yes i do yes i'm gonna look at the my list and
i'll tell you which number you should close with well text me the artist text me the artist uh
just just to be safe how well am i doing right now no this is this is the kind of real talk
people are looking for hey also you didn't um chirp me for all the cancellations i had this
time because i had a few this time
as well. Remember last time? It took me like four times.
Do I remember last time?
I'm haunted by it. Are you kidding me?
Yes.
Hold on, there's bicycle bells. I like this.
Have you texted me yet?
No, no, I'm looking at my list.
I can't remember. You don't remember your list?
I can't remember. It should be tattooed on your body somewhere.
Alright, alright, alright. Let me think. your body somewhere. All right, all right, all right.
Let me think.
This is tough.
They're all great songs, according to me, obviously.
Well, they're your top ten.
I hope that you like them.
All right, we're going to end with...
Here we go.
I'm texting you right now, okay?
Okay.
I'm looking at my phone.
This doesn't...
Looking at each other's phones makes for great radio.
You know, you could pass me your phone if you type it out.
Okay, sent. Done.
Remember, we are playing a wonderful song by Queen, so nobody is bored.
Are we not supposed to be talking during this song?
You can talk.
Okay, because I like talking.
Did you text me?
Yes, did you get it?
No, it's in your Twitter.
Oh, I'm sorry.
No, it's okay.
I said, okay.
We're going to figure this out.
Last time, I was actually telling people what great chemistry we had.
I take it all back.
All right.
Give me a second to change the order here.
Yeah, I screwed it up.
And I have a story for each of these songs.
I'm supposed to, I think, right?
Yeah, yeah.
So here's, obviously, you've never listened to an episode of Kick Out the Jams.
Is that true?
Have you been exposed?
Maybe.
So I start playing the song.
I might go 30 to 60 seconds uninterrupted.
Then I will fade it down and I will say the artist and the title.
And then the floor is yours.
We want to hear from you.
Why did you choose that song?
What did you love about it?
Great.
You know that song? Give me a did you love about it? Great. You know that song?
Give me a second here.
Oh, you know what?
You could just keep the order because I just screwed everything up.
Let's just do that.
No, you're ready for this?
Okay.
He's counting, guys.
There are 10 jams I have for you and that is not one of them.
Oh.
So let me go to your jams.
Okay.
This is great.
Should I tell a story while you figure this out?
You can't see that if I made it really big, maybe.
How good is your eyesight?
You're a young woman.
It's good.
It's good.
Oh, it's right there.
Yeah, it is right there.
That's okay.
What did you choose for me?
I'm very curious.
I may not have a story about it, but hey, improv.
One, two, three, four, five, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
9, 10. You know why? Your list is 11.
Okay, I'll load that one in.
You can have 11. Give me a second. Hold on.
Oh my goodness, you guys. I have that
album in my collection, so give me a second.
Hey, so I'm assuming you never
interview yourself.
That would be weird, but what would your top
10 be? I have a top 10 and I'm
saving it for sweeps week
oh okay is there a sweet sweeps week in podcasting uh i don't know if there is but let's
you're you can be the first one hey so how did you you you have your list did you have a hard
time making it as well oh yeah it was a pain in the butt actually um and i went through several
revisions and then some tunes that i had because i loved them when i was 15 i started like it's tough to weigh that against the songs
you loved when you were 30 and i struggled with like it was just tough and then i got rid of a
bunch that i loved when i was 15 because i felt like they aren't my favorite jams they're like my
my potent nostalgia drug or whatever like yes and And you need a shot of that. But those are important too. Did you have any? Do you have any?
Yeah, I do. I do. I now
have your 11 jams. I hope nobody
will be mad at me that I gave you 11
jams. I just break every rule
in the book, don't I? But I was like, that was weird because the
one you chose to be last is one I did not
have in my soundboard. Like if you chose any of
the other songs, I would never know
I was missing one. That's
actually very funny.
And that's less than 10.
It's one out of 11, which is what?
9%, 8%, whatever.
That is amazing.
You chose the one I did not have.
And you don't have to worry about the order.
You can just add it to the end.
Correct.
Please, before we proceed, we need a Mr. J update.
This is Jeff Merrick's former teacher at Humberside.
Last time you were here, he had just suffered a heart attack.
Yes.
We need an update on his health status.
Well, first, I wish the audience can see me smiling ear to ear that my dad and his legacy
follows me everywhere I go.
And I don't know if I said this last time I was on the show,
but I do get direct messages from fans on Facebook and Instagram.
I would say more than half of them are,
hey, are you Mr. J's daughter?
I loved your dad.
Like way more than I love you on whatever show you're on.
And it makes me so beyond happy.
Mr. J is still, I mean, he's 76.
So he's not a spring chicken.
My mom is 70 and a spring chicken.
You wouldn't know by the way she moves and whatever that she's 70.
So my dad, his age shows, but he's doing much better.
And the best part is he's in better spirits because that is,
he is so funny and so witty and so awesome to be around
that getting that back has been the best thing in the world.
His sardonic wit has returned.
Oh, he's too good.
Will he ever hear this?
I'll make him hear it.
He doesn't even know how to turn on a computer.
And I mean that.
I wish he made a better effort
because I think he spends a lot of time at home.
He loves radio.
I think he'd like a lot of time at home. He loves radio. He loves,
I think he'd like a lot of the cool documentaries on Netflix, but he just won't make the effort to
learn how to figure it out. So on his own, he'll never find this, but I'll make sure he does.
It's too bad. I forget Toronto Mike for a minute, but there's a lot of well-produced,
excellent podcasts out there with like stellar content and this niche thing. Like if you told
me your dad was really into model airplanes or I made that up, but into something like that, there's a podcast for that.
He really would benefit from being introduced to this wonderful world of podcasts.
I know, he loves conspiracy theories.
There's a million and one podcasts about how the man on the moon,
man did not walk on the moon, it was staged.
Holy smokes, don't even get me started on 9-11.
I know.
I know.
My next gift to my parents is going to be an iPhone because I find it very easy to use and I can just teach them and hopefully he can freaking figure it out and enjoy some
free time, his free time in another way, rather.
So I'm glad your dad is feeling better.
Me too.
You know, I played, I got distracted by this missing song,
but we were playing Bicycle Race by Queen.
Yeah.
Because you rode your bike here.
Yes.
You're the first, this is episode 260.
What?
You are the first guest to ride their bike here.
What?
I wouldn't make that up.
Well, I'm honored and proud because I love my bike
more than anything. And to all the drivers out there, I apologize on behalf of all the terrible
cyclists because there are many in the city and it drives me crazy. But I want them to know I'm a
good, great, responsible cyclist and I obey the rules of the road as we all should. Don't paint
us all with the same brush the same way because you drive as well, right? I do. And I'm a driver too. And there are bad drivers out there,
but nobody paints all drivers of that brush. Like, I don't know why it becomes an anti-cycling
sentiment. There's bad segments of everything and you can't, you know, broad stroke like that. So
I'm, uh, and, uh, again, I, I know where you came from and that's a great ride. Uh,
and I think last time you mentioned you were going to bike when you're at old mill, but you
thought, you know, it might be disrespectful or rude maybe if you were like hot and sweaty during
the recording. And I remember my thought was like, that would make me so, I would have the big smile,
like nothing would make me happier than a, this is going to sound worse than I mean it, Mr. J,
but nothing would make me happier than like a hot and sweaty Sophia. From biking though. That does sound terrible, but I mean that in a
good way. Because, because you know where it, because it came from the effort of biking. Yeah.
I bike every day and I love it. I love that somebody finally biked. And even way further
than Old Mill. I went way further now and it was, well, look, it's a beautiful day here.
We've had a terrible summer, so I had
to take advantage. My heart rate's
up. It's good. It hasn't been, because I
hear this on Twitter and different places.
What a terrible summer we had. I didn't notice
it was bad. Come on. You know what I think
it is? There were periods where
there was a lot of rain. There were some weeks, because
I bike every day.
Did I mention I bike every day? But because I
do that, I'm really aware of like weather.
I feel I'm aware of climate.
It was never, there were some days where it was rainy.
I remember a week or two where it felt rainy,
but generally speaking, it actually felt like a pretty good summer.
Am I nuts?
No, yes, you are.
I thought it was very blah is the right word, if that's correct.
Are you looking for like a string of like 40 degree days?
Is that what you're looking for?
No, but we didn't even have, we had really cool 20 degrees,
maybe windy, breezy, overcast, maybe no rain in June and July
when normally it should be like this, 22 and sunny.
I don't need it to be 30 degrees, but really just not that pleasant, really.
Okay, I stand corrected because I like maybe because that's ideal cycling weather,
but that 20 degrees is pretty good.
It feels pretty good.
I measure my summer success based on my tan and tanning abilities,
and it's not up to par.
I have what's called a farmer's tan because I just went camping,
so I was shirtless for a period of time.
And I have a great tan up to here,
and then it's like people were wearing sunglasses
when they looked at me
because I was so bright white.
But did you even it out?
What?
Did you even out your tan by being shirtless?
No, because the sun didn't come out very much.
And I didn't even know the tan.
Crappy summer.
Yeah.
Okay.
I see what you mean.
So if you judge your summers by biking,
you probably liked the summer.
And if you judge it by like beaching or lounging,
you'd probably wished it was warmer.
Yes, agreed.
All right, we need to do a little real talk here.
Okay.
I follow you closely, just like you're stalking Jay Onright, I'm stalking you. And you've recently done some cool work with Yahoo Sports.
Yes.
So what are you doing with Yahoo Sports?
Well, a mix of things.
I am doing work with Yahoo Sports, CBC Sports, and some other companies in the future yet to be named.
I can't name them now.
But I, as of July, Sportsnet and I amicably parted ways.
And I've gone freelance and I've really enjoyed the variety of
work that I'm doing with Yahoo it was just one project but we have other ones coming up
we covered BioSteel Camp which is the NHL I mean not all NHLers go there the ones that are
sponsored or signed with or the BioSteel ones. Yeah.
We covered their camp and had some fun,
definitely not hard-hitting journalism,
more fun pieces with players that kind of get them smiling and laughing,
which I love doing.
And so that was the most recent project
we worked on together.
And we are looking ahead to collaborating
down the line throughout the NHL season.
And you mentioned CBC in there.
We can't just gloss over that.
You were doing some work.
What are you doing with CBC?
So I'm working for their sports department as well, CBC Sports.
And right now I'm on Newsnet as their sports anchor update person.
And that's what I'm doing with them at the moment.
And who knows what will happen?
Obviously the Olympics coming up around the corner.
I would love to be part of that,
but taking it one step at a time.
And there's a company you mentioned,
but you couldn't,
you can't say the name.
Like,
is this because you're negotiating?
This is a negotiating tactic?
No,
no,
it's not.
The ones,
there are several in Toronto that I'm working with,
but because nothing's officially signed,
I don't, I don't want to jinx it,
nor do I want to say I will be doing work until...
I mean, you've been in this business.
You know how quickly things change.
So I don't want to say it until it's signed.
I've never been in this business,
but I do know how quickly things change.
They do change quickly.
But I don't want to bury the lead here, so...
So?
So we have breaking news.
The breaking news is there is an amicable split between Sophia.
Such dramatic music.
I'm butchering that now.
Sophia J.
Can I call you Sophia J?
Sophia J.
Has amicably broken up for the time being with Sportsnet.
And that, to me, I think will be news to a lot of listeners who aren't aware of that.
I have had some fans on Twitter reach out to me and ask,
but I wasn't really ready to talk about it in 140 characters because it is a longer story.
But Amicable Split still might be looking at doing freelance work in the future.
Who knows?
Freelance is a scary, scary world, but it's very exciting.
And I just wanted and want to broaden my experience in trying different things.
And therefore, yes, I am freelance, but no hard feelings on either side
and would be open to working with them and collaborating in the
future should that opportunity arise. Well said. You read that perfectly off your scripted,
just kidding. She's doing this off the top. I'm kidding. Yeah, my hands are folded.
No reading. Yeah. So that is the breaking news, I guess, to some people. I think to a lot of people,
just, you know, we see you on Sportsnet and then in
the summer people take vacations and maybe people tune out, especially because there's no hockey
going on and that's a big Rogers property. So I just think that, uh, it sounds like you got some,
uh, some, uh, what's that? What do you put in the fire? You put stoke? Coals? No, you,
you got coals in the fire. Okay. I think so. You've got coals in the fire. You got some things
going on, uh, freelance and this unnamed company.
Did you, when Jay and Dan left Fox Sports, did Fox Sports reach out to you as their replacement?
They did not.
Oh.
They did not.
No.
But I did.
Thought I had a good one there.
I did explore some work opportunities in the States and came very close to accepting a job.
Again, I feel like I close to accepting a job. Um, again,
I feel like I'm a FBI or something. Again, I can't mention who, but, um, it was, you know,
it's, it's funny because it was probably the most traumatic, traumatic is not the right word, but the most emotional experience of my life to date. One of the most, because it was a job that
six years ago, when I, 10 years ago, when I started in the industry, it was my job that six years ago when I, 10 years ago when I started in the industry,
it was my dream job and I would have killed to have it. And as I've grown up and have been in
the industry and learned a couple of things, I felt as though I wanted to take my career in a
different direction. And so it was a very emotional decision to those people listening who think I'm being dramatic. I don't know how else to explain it because this is my
craft. This is my passion and the amount of things I've given up in my life just to have a career
like this. I can't even name. So, uh, it was very difficult to work towards something for so long
and then realize when you got there that maybe it wasn't exactly where you, what you wanted. And so I ended up saying no and really spent some time
sulking about it and being upset and wondering if I made the right decision. But here I am now,
and I am confident in where I'm going. So I'm so curious though. That's amazing. Can you tell me
after the show? Yes, but you can't tell anyone. But if I did, I would lose your trust and confidence and you would
never come back on. So why would I ever
compromise? And who else would come on my show if I
started telling stories out of school?
But I need to know because that's your
dream job. My dream job
10 years ago, yeah. But I'm trying to think
of what it is. Clearly,
it's a huge sideline reporter for NFL
games on Fox, maybe.
My mind's running wild here.
You can't drop a clue for everybody.
No, I can't even give clues.
Let's just say it was a great opportunity,
and whoever or the person who has taken it,
I wish them all the best.
And I do sometimes wonder, I'm like,
did I do the right thing?
But I followed my heart in wanting to try other things,
and here I am.
And you know what?
If you see me serving coffee in a couple months,
you'll know I made the wrong choice.
No shame in that.
I might be joining you there.
I have a question, though.
How much of your decision was because you wanted to stay home?
Like, is that a factor that you want to stay home?
Yes, it was a big factor, but not the factor
because there have been other opportunities,
and I've been talking, perhaps,
or considering going to the states for other jobs
and and I will I would move but for the right thing so but being home is huge I mean gosh
I love my mom and dad so much it's important for me to be close with them and yeah I love the city
I I'm very comfortable I'm very happy here but that's not the end-all, be-all.
I would 100% consider moving
for what I felt would be the right thing
at the right time.
All right, everybody speculate away.
I will not be able to confirm or deny any guesses
because Sophia is going to whisper this in my ear
as soon as we stop recording.
But if I'm this curious,
listeners are pretty curious.
Yeah, and I hate to be, and I want to apologize to everyone listening that I hate to be so top secret, but I just'm this curious, listeners are pretty curious. Yeah, and I hate to be,
and I want to apologize to everyone listening
that I hate to be so top secret,
but I just don't think,
you know, this industry is all about not burning bridges.
I don't think it'd be fair to the company to chat about it.
So here we are, lips sealed.
Say no more.
I don't want to get you in trouble.
That would be uncool.
Now you did tell me, once again,
it was tough to get you in here.
Like we rescheduled many times, but it seemed like on Instagram, it was tough to get you in here. Like we rescheduled
many times, but it seemed like on Instagram, it seemed like you were always traveling somewhere.
Like you, you, you travel a lot. I think you're not the first person who's told me that. And I
didn't see it that way. I was like, do I, but I really have in the last two years, I absolutely
have, but I'm taking a bit of a hiatus being freelance. You want to make sure you keep track of your dollars.
So I'm stopping that.
But I have, which trips are you referring to?
Okay, because this recent one, not a big deal.
You were in cottage country, I think, maybe Muskoka or something like that.
Yeah.
But there was one before that.
I sound like I really do stalk you.
There was one before that, which was you were like, I don't know, were you in like Mexico?
I don't know. Where were you? Did you go to South America or something? Okay. So actually the one before that, which was you were like, I don't know, were you in like Mexico? I don't know.
Where were you?
Did you go to South America or something?
Okay.
So actually the one before that was Banff.
I'd never been to Banff.
I just talked to Jay about this.
Banff is beautiful.
Wait, is Jay also in Banff?
He's from Alberta.
He's a, yeah, the stalking can continue there.
You went to University of Alberta.
Yeah.
So I went to Banff just for a week on my own. Um, because I love the mountains.
I love nature. So I always, so you went by yourself to Banff. Yeah, I did. I wish I could,
you know what? I hope no one's listening. I wish I could do that. I can't do that. Like I can't
just disappear for a week. Kids, man. That's amazing. Like, okay, that's cool. You got a
cool life. I'm going to live precariously through you. Please continue. So I went to Banff, um,
to experience our great outdoors. I usually, uh, in, I've gone to Europe and Austria and Germany and Italy and hiked through the mountains there.
And I was thinking of going back, but I'm like, wait a second.
I've never been to Alberta and the great Rockies and everything we have to offer.
So I decided Canada 150, why not spend the dollars at home?
Really annoying flight though.
God, a thousand dollars
where did you fly to calgary yes yeah oh a grand it's cheaper than it's cheaper to fly to london
that's your answer by the way why why do people go to paris instead of i don't name it like newfoundland
or whatever yeah that's the reason it's ridiculous you can probably get yourself to paris for like
250 bucks you can definitely have a cheaper flight.
But I did it.
And then on the way back, I did plan on meeting a friend for the weekend for Calgary Stampede.
Also first time experience.
So much fun.
So that was kind of a bucket list thing.
Both of those items.
And I checked them off this summer.
It was great.
All right.
I'm just jealous.
You seem to be enjoying yourself.
But I did.
I don't want to talk about traveling too long if we don't have time. But I did go to South America. So I went to Brazil. Okay. I'm not jealous. You seem to be enjoying yourself. But I did. I don't want to talk about traveling too long if we don't have time.
But I did go to South America.
So I went to Brazil.
Okay.
I'm not dreaming this.
No, no, no.
I did.
You are traveling a lot.
I did go to Brazil in February.
That was also.
I decided maybe 20 days before the trip that I was going to go.
And the visa took 15 days.
I actually got the visa the day I was leaving, which is crazy because they got it just in time. Wait, wait. Can you explain this? You need a visa to visit Brazil?
I didn't know that, but you do. Wow. Yeah. So I got it the day of, I asked them to rush it and
they're like, we don't rush it. So hope it comes in time. I was like, well, my flight was $1,500.
So I hope so too. Um, but I, the reason I went there, you know, most people look at Brazil as
an unsafe place is because I have a friend who I met when I lived in France.
God, do I ever sound like a traveler?
No, it's amazing.
Please continue.
This is a side story, but I was a fio pair.
I was a nanny when I was 18, and I lived in France.
And the boy that I nannied, Noé was his name, had a cousin who was my age.
Noé was two, and his cousin was 16. I was 18. His cousin
was Morgan. And Morgan and I kind of lost touch. I mean, I moved back to Canada. Morgan's a boy or
a girl? A boy. And he and I were great friends when I lived in France. You know, two kids,
two teenagers just hanging out. We had the best time. But we lost touch because, of course,
I moved back to Canada. But through Facebook, has the social media does, we kind of regained contact. I visited him
in France, uh, last summer had the best time realized I missed him so much in, we kept in
touch. Anyhow, he was going to Brazil and he is a native. He could speak Portuguese fluently. His
father is South American. And I figured what, what a good opportunity to go with someone who's going to spend two months there and knows the place.
It was a small surfer town.
And why not go when I have my own personal tour guide?
So that is why I went on a 20-day notice.
I was like, that's it.
I'm doing it.
Try to make that short.
No, that's great.
And is this a platonic relationship?
Yes. Am I allowed to ask that? I don't's great and uh is this a platonic relationship yes i have i mean am i allowed to ask that i don't even know what is it my business i just want if people are
looking at my instagram working is drop dead gorgeous he's beautiful he's like the stereotypical
beautiful south american hot guy but we are way too close he's like a brother to me we fought like
brother and sister on this tour like i on this tour on this trip i almost punched him in the face 10 times out of love and vice versa but uh we are definitely
friends i love him to death and um it was a great time if you were a couple yeah you would be morgan
and sofia which you know where i'm going with this the the young the beautiful young girl you uh just
met again because we have a nice photo of you last time you were here.
You and my daughter, my youngest.
We're going to get another photo after this.
Okay.
But her name is Morgan Sophia.
How funny.
How cool is that?
So now I need you to realize that you are in love with Morgan
and you belong with Morgan.
I apologize if you have a boyfriend right now.
No, I don't.
He's listening.
No, I'm...
I'm trying to set you up with another guy here.
No, it's all good.
Morgan and I, we have the best time together.
But if you are willing to pay for my flights to France,
here and there, I will do it.
As we mentioned, it's very cheap.
Yeah, you're right.
You can go.
Perfect.
I went to France once for no joke.
And this is total after taxes and everything.
So it was $149.
Everything was called a champagne flight.
I swear to you, this is in 2011 or 2012
or maybe 2013, maybe 2013.
Maybe, you know what?
I can't remember now.
2013, I think.
Swear to you, it was called champagne flight.
It was $50, but then they have this BS $100 charge
that goes on tickets or something.
So I ended up paying $150, but that's
all I paid for my flight to Paris. Yeah. Return? Uh, yeah. Uh, no, just one way. Okay. Just one
way, but 150 bucks total for this champagne. They gave you champagne on the flight too. Was it a
last minute thing? No, we got to, before we leave, ask Monica cause she booked this and it was
amazing cause we both went. I proposed to her at the top of the eiffel tower come on true story which i thought was romantic and then some buddies
told me it was really cheesy so now i think maybe that's not romantic maybe that's like cliche or
whatever no you know what i don't believe in uh painting romance with the same brush either if
monica liked it then isn't that all that matters she did like it there you go but i like the uh
cheap flight so So that happened.
But okay, I have a quick
question for you from Twitter.
A guy named Daryl. And I can tell you he wrote
this question not realizing
you were no longer with Sportsnet.
But I will read it. For Sophia,
does she think women sports
casters are severely lacking
in a radio-dominated
male broadcaster era.
And I believe this is tied to something I wrote about your previous employer has a radio station in Toronto called Fan 590.
And I just noticed all the hosts were white guys.
Like, forget the fact that they're all male.
They're all white males.
So I wrote about this and ruffled.
I didn't mean to cause any trouble.
I wasn't suggesting Rogers has racist or misogynist hiring practices.
No, I just thought maybe we should talk about this.
Does this represent the city of Toronto?
What are your thoughts on that?
Do you feel, what's his exact thing, that women are lacking?
Should there be more female voices on one of the biggest sports radio station in the country.
So I'm going to have to tiptoe around this one,
but yes,
I do.
But I also,
and I say this with all due respect.
And if you guys,
if you women,
if you ladies are out there,
then make yourselves known.
But I also feel like,
you know,
it's a supply and demand issue where there are many female broadcasters employed at Sportsnet or at TSN who are absolutely fantastic, but know, it's a supply and demand issue where there are many female broadcasters employed
at Sportsnet or at TSN who are absolutely fantastic, but it, it also correlates with
their desire to do that. Um, and your ability to do that. And I will say this because of previous
experience, it's very different reading highlights and, and, and doing highlights on a show than candidly,
openly.
And what's the word I'm looking for?
It's,
it's raw,
raw,
raw.
Authentically?
No,
no,
just,
um,
organically,
naturally,
organically talking sports for an hour or some of those shows are three hours.
So the desire to do that and the knowledge to do that,
and I'm not saying that we don't have that knowledge.
In fact, I would love to be on radio.
In doing this podcast, and I do CBC radio as part of my Newsnet hits.
I do sports hits, but it's only about five minutes.
It just rekindled the relationship I had with radio,
which is where I started, and I love it way more than TV.
And television, I'm starting to realize. So for me, for instance, I would love to do that. But you would have to,
you can't make someone be on radio. If let's say there's a female that wants to be a broadcaster,
but she wants to do sideline or she wants to do highlights or she wants to do features,
then that's what she wants to do. If there are those women who want to be on sports radio
and they're not getting the jobs, then it is a problem.
But I don't know what the case, what that case is.
It's a bit of a chicken and egg thing because you're right.
Maybe there's less women to draw from,
but maybe there's less women to draw from because they have,
they don't see, sorry, you don't see radio people,
but you don't hear any female perspectives and voices on the radio so it's kind of a i think it's time i
think to daryl did you say daryl i definitely think it is time and i definitely think there are
many more females to choose from than there would have been let's say 20 years ago um but
so i do think that it is time to do that
and those who want that work
make yourselves known
and go get it myself included
TSN radio has Andy Petrillo
you know you remind me a bit of
I was you mentioned CBC
like I know Andy better watch her back
you could take some
no I don't want her to feel that way
because I love her so much
and I have the utmost respect for her her and i had lunch actually a month ago um i love her i just tell her to come
do this show tell her she'll enjoy herself okay i will i will tell her but no i in fact if i take
it as a compliment that i you i remind you of andy because i just love her so much and i it's a huge
compliment um but i want her to
know i would never want to take her job i know i'm just trying to cause i'm trying to cause trouble
no but i'd love to collaborate with her like she's she's awesome she's so good and she knows her
stuff episode 203 which was your episode that you did here if people want to go back and hear more
about sophia j and her career go to 20 203. Honestly, I listen back to every
episode and you sound like you belong on the radio. And after 203, there should have been
program directors. Your phone should have been burning up. People saying, I need you on my
station or whatnot. And I think that if you want to be in radio, I'm pleased to hear you want to
be on radio. I a lot of uh young female
broadcasters feel tv is like top of the heap and that's where they gravitate towards because that's
where i don't know where them i don't even know if it's true but where the money is i'm sure that
maybe there's more money maybe there's more fame and glamour to be on television but radio's cool
man like this is it cool and and you know what for me it's funny i i really love the fact that i
wouldn't have to do my makeup and can
bike to work and not worry about my helmet hot and sweaty hot and sweaty on the radio but also I do
believe you know people have no idea um and I mean that with all due respect I like why would you
know unless you worked in the business I don't know a lot about um you know, sales or whatever marketing, but, but you don't know, television
production is great, but it's also you're, you're constrained to time, there's commercials you have
to get in, there are, you know, you may have 30 seconds to chat about a topic, let's for example,
because the show is an hour long, you got to get to other things. In radio, you can really let your
personality go as well as expand on a topic,
which is why I like it so much more than TV
because it's hard for me to get my thoughts
and opinion in 30 seconds
before I throw to something else.
So I love it and that's why I love it.
Cool.
I just remembered right now
that you're doing a Kick Out the Jams episode.
This really felt like a deep dive,
but we had some things to share with the audience.
We will be kicking out the champs.
But first, a word from our sponsors.
I urge everyone listening to go to patreon.com slash Toronto Mike

terry fox run in high park so if you go to torontomike.com,
there's a button at the top that says Terry Fox Run.
Click that and give your money to the Terry Fox Foundation.
They'll send you a tax receipt,
which I won't do when you give me your money.
I'm not sending you a tax receipt,
but Terry Fox Foundation will do that.
So do that.
You also have a six pack of Great Lakes beer in front of you.
I can't wait.
Oh, my God.
I had this last time and it was fantastic.
And I got into a fight with my brother about it because I brought some for my dad and I left them in the fridge for my father.
And then when I came home, my brother was drinking them and I was really pissed off.
See, now you can mend the wounds with the new six-pack that you're bringing, you can bring
over. I just have to say, don't touch them,
Sebastian. These are for dad. That's great.
Enjoy that. And I'm also,
I can't remember, if you came
last November, you probably
did not receive, in fact,
I know you did not receive a
pint glass. I didn't.
That's courtesy of Brian Gerstein,
who's with propertyinthesix.com. Oh, I like it. The six, I didn't. That's courtesy of Brian Gerstein who's with propertyinthesix.com
Oh, I like it. The six, I like that.
Speaking of Drake. Oh my god, I know.
Which maybe will be
one of her jams. I don't want to reveal anything more
than that. But there is
that pint glass goes home with you as well.
Thank you. And let's hear

Boom. Sophia J, are you ready to kick out the jam? Yes, I am. So I'm all surrounded By the things I thought I'd put away
And I'm all surrounded
By the things I thought I put away
There's a pile in the closet
That's where I threw some yesterday Maybe under the rug
That's where I swept some the other day
So the mess is drawing forces
Outside I hear them say
Just come out with your hands up
So we can blow you away
And I walk out the door Get blown wide open
By the things I put away
And I wasn't even around
Just blown wide open.
Now the best is where I lay.
Big wreck.
Blown wide open.
Okay.
So I did say earlier that I did not have a top,
I couldn't number them one to ten because I love them all,
but I correct myself because this is definitely my number one.
So this is my number one.
I love this song.
Am I supposed to tell you why?
Are you kidding me?
I am.
Absolutely.
Okay, well, I'm a big, I love listening to the music.
I love listening to the instruments,
and I think this song is beautifully written.
But I'm a very big lyrics person as well.
And the lyrics here, if people do pay attention and listen, are so powerful.
I think anyone and everyone can relate to procrastinating and not dealing with something.
I don't want to sound like Oprah here, but everyone
has, you know, something in their past, a memory, a bad decision they made, a bad decision or a
decision they didn't make or whatever that I think sneaks back up on you sometimes.
And in this case, Thornley is singing about, yeah, just ignoring certain things, sweeping them under the rug.
And then they show up one day in his life and blow them open.
And I just think it's very, very, very powerful.
I feel like when Thornley is singing this particular song, he is feeling every single lyric, every single strum of it when he's singing it.
Like this part here in his voice, oh, it's just so genuine,
and it gives me goosebumps every single time I listen to it,
and I love him for it. Ian Thornley had some cool solo tracks too.
Mm-hmm, he did.
And I liked, I listened to many of them.
This is with Big Wreck,
but I listened to his solo album as well.
Albums, I believe.
And I love his voice.
I love, love, love his voice.
I was trying to choose between this
and that song,
also by Big Wreck.
That's my favorite Big Wreck song,
that song.
So that was a very...
I really love that tune.
So good, right?
I'm sure that was pitchy, but...
I wanted to pick that one because I love it just as much,
but because this one is a little bit lesser known,
I thought I would pick this.
Plus, it's just so good.
At the time, I was listening to 102.1 quite a bit.
And this song was played early and often, as they say.
It was a big CanCon hit.
So good.
I love this lead up.
So it's a great combination of music and lyrics for me, this one.
And reminds me of, when would it have come out?
The 90s?
Reminds me of being a teenager.
Great question. If it's 90s, out? The 90s? Reminds me of being a teenager. Great question.
If it's 90s, it's late 90s.
Maybe early 2000s then.
Yeah, it could have leaked into the aughts, as we say.
You know what? There's a live version on YouTube
that when I am just chilling out with my headphones and singing music,
I'll put that one on instead.
I wouldn't want to play it on this show because the quality,
obviously being a YouTube video and filmed at a concert, isn't that great.
But to what I said earlier about him just like feeling every little moment in the song,
it's so evident when it's live and it's so good.
He just gives it everything he has.
Have you seen Big Wreck live?
Oh, he gives it everything he has.
Have you seen Big Wreck live?
I saw a reunion tour of sorts, Super Bowl, I can't even remember,
but let's say four years ago.
They played at the Sound Academy, I think, for a Super Bowl party,
and they played one or two songs.
They played that song, and it was fantastic.
But no, in their prime, I had never seen them live they renamed the sound academy it's the rebel now oh but i mean i just was thinking
they're renaming the acc they keep renaming all these things making my life difficult i don't
know the rebel did the rebel did pay uh the rebel media paid eight hundred uh thousand dollars to
rename sound academy. Just kidding.
Oh, I was going to say, what?
That's very similar to the $800 million.
That's right.
It was $800 million.
Let us move on to your second jam.
Okay. I'm out. Don't say you want me, don't say you need me
If you ain't ready, turn around
We're unable, calls on the table
And I believe in what we've found
If we can't trust the love in us
There'll be no looking back, no looking back, no
If there's enough, it's time to be touched
There'll be no looking back, no looking back, no
If we're falling in love, we're falling in love
There'll be nothing above
And I won't give you up, oh I won't give you up, no I won't give you up If we're falling in love, if we're falling in love
We're falling in love, there'll be nothing above Disclosure, Willing and Able.
Oh my gosh.
Are you listening to this for the first time, by the way?
Yes, I am.
No, I wasn't even sure.
Usually I know these songs and i know
when to fade down or whatever but on this song because i'm actually listening listening to it
right now for the very first time i wasn't sure like is there a chorus or a natural place to bring
it down you did a great job well how do you feel about it i like uh i had the headphones on right
so i like how it uses the the right and left uh and And it's not a genre I'm very familiar with.
I've never heard of Disclosure.
I feel like I'm kicking out of the jams here.
I don't know anything about this artist, Disclosure.
I honestly don't know Disclosure.
Oh my gosh.
Should I?
Well, yes.
I'll tell you why.
Because they have a very popular song featuring Sam Smith, Latch.
Do you know that song?
Latch isn't a very good, it wouldn't give away what the song is.
So what era is this song from?
Is this recent?
This album is maybe three years old,
and Latch with Sam Smith is about four or five.
And Sam Smith put Disclosure on the map,
and Disclosure put Sam Smith on the map.
And I wanted to choose that one because, again, what I'm doing is I love the whole album but truthfully Latch is my
favorite song in the entire world with Disclosure and Sam Smith.
I was gonna say that isn't one of your jams.
No it isn't and the reason it isn't is because it is a song that many many many
people know and I like exposing them to maybe other hits or other great
sounds okay but so you're violating the number one rule which is your your favorite songs are
your favorite songs okay wait but this is this is there this is one of my favorites for sure
i can't i'm way more than 10. um well you do have 11 actually i do have 11. yeah no i love love love
love love this song and disclosure i know i don't really like this sound as traditionally either, but they do it so well. I couldn't even tell you
the genre. It's not really house. It's house slash.
There's an R&B vibe going on there.
So Disclosure has a guest singer on each of their songs so he the featuring uh whoever this is whoops um would
not be on other songs so um they are two kids that are djs and producers and they bring in artists
and this is one of them and sam smith has been featured on their songs twice um is that like a
like a chain smokers type thing where they bring in different? Yeah, it is.
Or Calvin Harris or something like that.
Exactly.
Less poppy, I would think, though.
So the only pop music that really comes in my home is stuff that my older two kids bring to me.
And they bring it to me and we listen to it because I'm interested in what the kids are listening to.
And they haven't brought me any disclosure. Well, maybe you can bring it to me and we listen to it because I'm interested in what the kids are listening to. And they haven't brought me any disclosure.
Well, maybe you can bring it to them.
This is what the wonderful thing about kicking out the jams is now I know disclosure exists and I can share it with my, I think my 13-year-old daughter might like that and introduce her to disclosure.
Perfect.
Are they British?
I know nothing about disclosure.
I think Swedish.
All the pop makers are from Sweden.
I think Sweden.
I think.
I hope I'm not wrong.
It's a hit-making factory in Sweden.
But Sam Smith is British,
and they really brought each other,
they put each other on the map.
Sam Smith is also the name of a local park.
Oh.
That's a fun fact that you could bike to from here.
There you go.
Colonel Samuel Smith.
Let's hear another
Sophia J. Jam. I In the day we arrive on the planet
Can blinking step into the sun On the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking step into the sun
There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There's far too much to take
in here
What if I'm
thinking ever
before
But the sun rolling
high through the
sapphire sky
keeps great and small
on the endless round
It's the circle of life.
And it moves us all.
Circle of Life from the Lion King soundtrack.
And I'm afraid I don't know who the artist is.
I am afraid I don't either.
I think Elton John produced everything on that soundtrack.
Produced it.
He's not vocally
featured on this one.
Oh, I love this song.
Okay, so
I should have spent more time listening
to these jams, but I grabbed this
song that you asked me to grab and I
loaded it. And as I was listening to it, I was
afraid I had the wrong version
because in my mind, this song is
sung by Elton John.
It is as well.
Yes.
But I like the radio hits by Elton John.
I like this one so much more.
I love you, Elton John.
But I like this version so much.
I mean, it reminds me I can picture the visuals because I watched The Lion King a million times growing up.
But this one, too, is just lyrically and musically an unbelievable combination.
And for me, you know, with my aging parents and making decisions that are going to change my,
put my life in one direction or the other,
this one sometimes when I'm not in the greatest mood, I will just put on.
And it changes everything for me.
It puts me in a good mood.
But it is a reminder of so many things we can't control. Time passes and it is everything for me it puts me in a good mood but it is a reminder of so many
things we can't control time passes and it is a circle of life like with death or his rebirth and
like I said with my aging parents it's been sometimes hard to accept that they're not super
human um and it's a very humbling song and really brings me um makes me present, so to speak. And I think it's just, it's so beautiful.
I love that it's featured on a kids movie as well.
So I have a very, very deep love for this one.
Great kids movie too.
Because I've seen a lot of bad kids movies.
This is a great one.
It's so good.
It's the life lessons and the moral of it.
And still funny and entertaining.
Like, I think it's a perfect.
You know what?
It's not just a kid's movie, though.
Don't you think adults enjoy it as well?
I mean, I've seen the production that Mirvish Productions brought, The Lion King.
And that was amazing.
For adults.
Yeah.
So good.
Gives me goosebumps, too.
Oh, gives me goosebumps too.
And props to me that I accidentally got the right version because I could have easily gone for an Elton John version.
You're right.
And you know what?
That would have thrown me off.
I would have been like,
good job, but not the right one.
So great for finding out.
Another strike of luck here.
But let's listen to another jam Just to kill you looks alright
I am drunk with lust tonight
Your wounds are overly wide
And they might be just my size I sigh
Now I'm afraid Of open water
But I often bathe in sin
Let's be honest, you know you shouldn't bother Cause with me, it's impossible to win
Dressed to kill you, I'm so right
Are you drawn with love tonight? Alexis on fire.
Sidewalk when she walks.
You know, listening to this now, I mean, because I've listened to it for so many years, Alexis on Fire, Sidewalk When She Walks.
You know, listening to this now,
I mean, because I've listened to it for so many years,
it has a special place in my heart.
But I wonder the people hearing it for the first time,
very teenage angsty.
Doesn't it have that sound a little to it?
I love Alexis on Fire. I have a Canadian from St. Catherine's Band,
Dallas Green, the lead singer,
who does City in Col Color and Dallas Green things.
This is him here. His voice is unbelievably incredible.
I love his City in Color work as well.
But this is what introduced me to Dallas.
And I love this. I really loved rock growing up so much.
And I still love it.
And this is a bit of has obviously that that sound and that flavor.
And reminds me of going to all their shows when i was younger i've gone i've gone to at least eight ten and i broke
my nose in one of them really mosh pit uh which will forever be with me that's a rite of passage
definitely a mosh moshing um and uh i love their sound so much they actually had a reunion they have a reunion tour
going on but they had to cancel the toronto date because of illness i believe or a flu or a cold
so i'm hoping to go when they come back but i love dallas green i love alexis on fire and i would
encourage anyone who likes the sound of this to listen to the rest of their things their albums
even though they are old.
They're not making new music together.
I don't think.
I hope we're not wrong about that.
But I know they broke up because Dallas went on to do things.
But amicably as well.
This track from Alexis on Fire is, yeah, you've got Dallas Green on vocals.
You don't have Yelling Guy.
George.
Yeah, I chose one without George.
I love this one. i'm not cheating here but
there are so many featuring george screaming uh as well but i just figured that for those who
don't like that type of sound this would be a nice introduction into what else alex on fire has to
offer um but george is featured in a lot of them and And I want to support something you said, which is that Dallas Green has an amazing voice.
And I love it because he can go from
ear-bleeding hard rock tune
to the quietest, sweetest little ballad like that.
And the voice works in both.
It's quite amazing, really.
It is quite amazing, his talent and his range.
He has a track with gourd downy called
sleeping sickness don't know if i know it which uh i don't want to give any spoiler it might be
one of my 10 jams that's how much i enjoy that song oh i've got to look that up then i will yeah
i'll make sure if you don't have it i will send it to you because uh it's it was a it was a hit
i want to say it was a cancon hit But just the blending of the two voices, perfect.
Gord and Dallas.
I'm mad at myself that I don't know about it.
Oh, here.
Hold on here.
I might have it.
I have some of my jams loaded up for the day.
I want to surprise people.
Let me see if it's there.
Well, then don't give it away.
Well, hey.
Let me see.
Okay.
I'm just reading.
This is fun.
Radio 2.
I don't have it there.
So it wasn't one of my 10 jams.
It was almost.
It was on my short list. That's for sure. Sleeping sickness. I will remember have it there. So it wasn't one of my 10 jams. It was almost, it was on my short list.
That's for sure. Sleeping Sickness.
Sleeping Sickness. Amazing.
Alright, another jam
for Sophia.
Let me go back to your tab.
For Sophia J. Thank you. I guess you don't need it
I guess you don't want me to repeat it
But everything I have to give
I'll give to you It's not like we planned it
You tried to stay but you could not stand it
To see me shut down so low
As though it was an easy thing to do
Listen when all of this
around
us will fall
over
I tell you
what we're gonna do
hey
you
will shelter
me my love
And I, I will shelter you
I will shelter you
That's so pretty.
Ray Lamontagne?
Yes.
Shelter.
Do you know Ray at all?
Yes, I know of him.
I hear great things about his songwriting ability,
but I've never actually put on a Ray track.
Isn't he great?
Another one I would recommend to people is Trouble.
And I can't believe you're getting me to open up here,
but this has an intimate memory for me.
This is an artist that someone I was very much in love with
introduced me to.
And he was a friend of mine.
And I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life,
and he really stepped up and was there for me.
And I just love him very much.
We are not together, but a great friend of mine.
And he introduced me to this artist,
and every time I listen to Ray I think of him and it with
fond fond fond memories and this song just reminds me of us being there for
each other shelter and helping each other through it and I love it that's
the beautiful thing about music and how it personally affects you I always refer
to it as a bit of a time machine. You're now feeling that.
Yeah, and it brings you, oh my gosh,
I just was sitting here and closing my eyes
and just thinking of hanging out with him
and being there for each other
and puts a big smile on my face.
Beautiful song.
It's great. His voice is killer.
How do you get a voice like that?
Do you got to drink some vodka and smoke?
Is that the trick?
Right?
So raspy and strong, though, at the same time.
And he plays his guitar.
I would love to see Ray.
Maybe you have to be a colicky baby.
Because I heard Emma Stone in an interview once,
and they were asking her about her voice.
And she said she has that voice because she was a colicky baby.
And cried all the time?
I guess so.
And cried her vocal cords to shreds or something.
That's actually so funny.
I thought you were kidding.
No.
That's funny.
Oh, Ray.
So, anyway, Trouble's another one people should listen to.
This is off the album, Trouble.
How old is this song?
I think Trouble is 2000.
I should know these details.
I'm going to look this up.
No, no, I think Trouble was 2007. I should know these details. I'm going to look this up. No, no, I think Trouble was 2007.
I think it's way back.
Well, the good thing about the Kick Out the Jams episodes
is because you play the song in its entirety,
you actually have Google time.
Like, you actually have time to Google something.
Oh, wait, it doesn't say.
Oh, it does.
August 15th, 2004.
Wow, long time ago thank you Ray time for another jam
When the lights go down in the city And the sun shines on the bed
Ooh, I wanna be there in my city
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
So you think you're lonely
Well, my friend, I'm lonely too I want to get back to my city. It's sad
There's been mornings
Out on the road without you
Without your touch Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh one of the reasons, and it was. I'm a proud Torontonian, born and raised here.
I'm definitely in love with my city in very many ways.
And this song just reminds me of biking in the sunset home
and seeing the CN Tower by the lakeshore or Blue West Village where I grew up.
And this was also introduced to me by my
ex who I mentioned, Marty, who I'm great friends with.
Marty! Marty McSomething.
Where'd it fly?
He introduced me to this song
and he also
grew up in my neighborhood in Blue West
Village and so we would listen to it together
walking through High Park or something like that.
It's a very
isn't it? I feel like you can have a beer on a dock.
Can I guess Marty's name or no?
Yes.
Marty McDougal.
Why would you guess that?
I don't know.
Because my buddy Tim McDougal had a younger brother named Marty.
You know Tim McDougal.
Okay, ready for this?
The last, no, two episodes ago, Larry Fedorek was in here kicking out the jams.
And I told a brief story.
I'm freaking out here because I told a brief story about how
in grade seven, I was listening to
George Michael's Faith.
And Tim McDougal passed me his
Walkman and said, listen to this.
And it was Sex Pistols. And it completely
steered me into
a whole new direction based on
Tim McDougal putting a Walkman earbud
in my ear because we were in the same
class at St. Pius
at Jane and Blue.
That is Marty's brother who I've had many
Christmases with Tim McDougal and Laura, his wife.
I witnessed when
Tim had a great
fall in the St. Pius schoolyard.
I was with him and I've never seen
so much blood
come out of his lip oh well he's okay i'm happy to report he's okay so wait a minute is that the
right marty are you kidding yeah i dated marty for six years and he's um such an awesome dude i love
him so much but we uh and he's happily dating someone else right now and we are still friends
and i you know met his girlfriend like it's we're just great and he's such a great dude yeah tim
tim and i many christmases together i don't know what to say because marty mick something it's mac
actually but yeah i thought we cheated we called macdougal we called the mcdougal it is mcdougal
but i mean it's spelled Mac.
Okay.
All right.
But that's, you realize that, I don't want to sidetrack us too much, but that is amazing.
That I know the Marty, and I didn't know Marty because he was much younger.
He was younger.
He was younger. I knew Tim because Tim was born in my year and was in my, we went to grade eight, up
through grade eight together before he went to Humberside and I went to Power.
Isn't that so funny?
But I mean, we used to, like him and Alex Kacharski, we used to, there's a whole group of skateboarding, skateboarders going on.
Tim was key in the skateboarding clique.
At Pius, yeah, we're talking like mid to late 80s.
Yeah.
I'm going to have to tell Marty and he's going to have to tell Tim.
Oh, and I just had a flashback.
This is so crazy. And now I'm going to have to tell Marty and he's going to have to tell Tim. Oh, and I just had a flashback. This is so crazy.
And now I'm going to pretend no one else is listening.
But I spent three years working at the C&E, a game booth attendant at the X.
Okay.
Like 89, 90, and 91, I think.
And all three years, Tim McDougal was working at the X.
And I would see him every day at the X and say hi to Tim, my old buddy from primary school,
because we were in high school at that point.
He was working like the gates. What? So he would punch your, he would punch. I had a pass. It was a paper pass that got me into all 20 days.
It was 20 days back then. And Tim was the guy who would punch your, you'd see him every
morning punching your pass because you were there. Yeah. I'm going to have to ask Tim
about that. Yeah. Tell Tim I said hi. And then tell Tim the weirdest part of this story
because it's all breaking my brain right now. is that two episodes ago which i only recorded a couple
of days ago okay of larry fedorik uh i told a tim mcdougall story i haven't mentioned i haven't said
the word tim mcdougall in 15 years maybe i don't tell tim mcdougall stories i've had 260 episodes
i've told a tim mcdougal story two episodes ago for the first time.
And it was just because we were talking about who introduces you to music.
And Tim introduced me to Sex Pistols.
Yeah.
Wow.
You know what's funny?
That you guessed.
I was like, yeah, okay, go ahead and guess.
And you did.
I was like, what the hell?
Wow.
All right.
All right.
Where do we go from there?
Next jam, I guess. All right. All right. Where do we go from there? Next jam, I guess. All right. All right.
Then I can recover for here. Let's hear your next jam. I might be too strung out on compliments
Overdosed on confidence
Started not to give a fuck and stop fearing the consequence
Drinking every night because we drink to my accomplishments
Faded way too long, I'm floating in and out of consciousness
And they saying I'm back, I'd agree with that
I just take my time with all this shit, I still believe in that
I had someone tell me I fell off, ooh, I needed that
And they wanna see me pick back up, well, where'd I leave it at?
I know I exaggerated things, nah, I got it like that
Tuck my napkin in my shirt, cause I'm just mobbin' like that
You know good and well that you don't want a problem like that
You gon' make someone around me catch a body like that
No, don't do it, please don't do it because one of us goes in and
we all go through it and drizzy got the money so drizzy gonna pay it those my brothers i ain't even
gotta say it that's just something they know they know they know they know they know they know yeah they know yeah that the real is on the rise
drake headlines and i fucking love this track it's so good isn't it
okay so drake oh my god my love for drake will never end. Call him a sellout or he's too popular now or whatever.
Who cares?
Because he is fantastic.
Always will be to me.
Some of his songs, people criticize him for some of his recent songs sounding the same.
Yeah, okay, whatever.
But he's put out so many great hits and put Toronto on the map and is a proud Torontoite.
But, okay, wait, hold on.
I got to backtrack.
Did not put Toronto on the map. But in terms of pop. But, okay, wait, hold on, I gotta backtrack. Did not put Toronto on the map,
but in terms of pop culture
and urban culture,
he's definitely done that.
Yeah,
because Maestro Fresh West
did that,
okay?
Okay.
No,
but I was wrong in saying that,
but he's,
you know,
resurrected a certain image
and made it cool amongst,
I'm thinking,
basketball players.
Vince Carter was a big part of that.
Actually,
Drake executive produced
a film that's being featured in TIFF called The Carter Effect.
And I'm hoping to interview him.
I really, really hope I get to do that.
But anyhow, he credits Carter to making him realize when he was younger that Toronto is really cool.
And Drake makes that very evident in all his songs.
I love this one.
You know that I emailed you many times about my decision making with picking the right Drake song.
There are way too many.
I love all of them to pick.
But I picked this one because it puts me in a good mood.
But also his lyrics, just the right amount of cockiness.
I agree with you 100%.
He somehow pulls it off where you like the swagger.
It's not too much.
He still seems like a nice Toronto guy.
Yes, yes. And this one and some of
his lyrics are just a right
amount of like, I'm really wicked
but not too over the top.
I heard once that they would rather hear about memories
than enemies. Oh, I don't remember this part.
Rather hear what was or what will be
than what is. Rather hear
how you got it over how much it cost you.
Rather hear about finding yourself
and how you lost you.
Rather you make this an open letter about family and struggle and it taking forever.
About hearts that you've broken and ties that you've severed.
No doubt in my mind, that'll make them feel better.
That's the first time I heard that.
I introduced you to something.
I should tell you, my son, who's 15 and a half,
because of him, I have in my collection everything this man,
every mixtape, everything Drizzy has ever released, ever.
So you could have picked any Drizzy song,
I would have pulled it up from my collection.
And so your son loves Drizzy?
Absolutely.
And my daughter loves Drake as well.
And you're right, he's one of those guys, crossover guys,
where the 13-year-olds like him where the 13-year-olds like him,
the 23-year-olds like him,
the 33-year-olds like it,
and the old farts like me like him.
Like, I think he's just amazing.
Me too.
I love Drake and I'm so glad to have him in the top 10.
And he's the reason there's a property in the six.com.
Right.
The six.
That's right.
And you can spell it numerical six, I-X, if you wish.
Which I like.
I like how that looks.
Exactly.
Yeah, I know.
He's done a lot for the city.
And yeah, big, big fan of Drake. I don't know how many people have kicked out the jams.
I want to say like maybe 10 or 11 or 12 people have done this.
Any Drake?
No, this is it.
This is the first.
I hate to say this because I'm a big fan. This is the first
rap song that's not
by a white person that's ever
been kicked out in the history of Kick Out the
Jams. Norm Wilner
brought a Beastie Boys track
with him and we played Beastie Boys
Intergalactic. I love Beastie Boys too
but they are white rappers. You're
the first person to have a
black rapper on your list of jams.
Oh my gosh.
I'm honored to be the first Drake pusher on this show,
but how can you not be?
I love him.
No, I know.
There's only one way to follow up.
Do I have time for a quick story?
Yeah, of course.
Really, really, really, really quick.
The good thing about recording a podcast in your basement
is there's no boss.
Time is up to you.
Okay, well, I'll make it quick, though.
I'd never seen Drake live.
It is another thing on my bucket list,
but I'm always away when he does OVO Fest here.
Anyhow, I went to see with a friend reluctantly,
and if you're listening, Jess, I love you.
I was just exhausted.
She was exhausted.
We almost canceled our date together.
We were going to go see Georgia Smith,
who is featured in one of Drake's songs,
and this beautiful young artist from England.
Anyway, I almost bailed because I was exhausted, but I was like, let's just go.
And it was at the Velvet Underground. The venue maybe had, what, 500 people.
And she played her whole she sang her album.
And then she's like, I might as well sing the song.
I'm in Toronto that I was featured on with Drake. Let's do it.
And she started to sing and then she screwed up up and I'm doing air quotes here and started again
and I just my heart started racing cuz I'm like I know what's gonna happen so I
pulled out my phone and sure enough Drake came out in front of 500 people
and finished the song with her the place exploded and I it was just last week I
couldn't believe that I saw Drake in front of 500 people it was a great
moment in my life that's amazing yeah. Yeah, that's amazing. Great story. I'm glad you took the time to tell that one. And I'm glad you picked a Drake
song. But we have more jams to kick out. Let's go. America, God bless you if it's good to you.
America, please take my hand.
Can you help me understand?
Throw a stake off the ark to a pool full of sharks.
Here, take it.
Leave them in the wilderness with a sworn nemesis, he'll make it Take the gratitude from him, I bet he show you something more
I'll chip a nigga little bit of nothing
I'll chip a nigga little bit of nothing
I'll chip a nigga little bit of nothing
I'll chip a nigga then throw of nothing I chip a nigga little bit of nothing
I chip a nigga then throw the blower in his lap
Walk myself to the court like bitch I did that X-rated
Johnny don't wanna go to school no more, no more
Johnny said books ain't cool no more Johnny wanna be a rapper like his big cousin. Johnny caught a body
yesterday out hustling. God bless America, you know we all love him. Yesterday I got a call like
from my dog like 101. Said they killed his only son because of insufficient funds. He was sobbing,
he was mobbing, way belligerent and drunk. Talking out his head, philosophizing on what the Lord
had done. He said, kid, I can't you pray for me? It been a fucked up day for me. I know that you Kendrick Lamar.
Triple X?
Yeah.
So Kendrick,
oh, he's great.
He's a great artist,
but I too just started to have lots of respect for his music
because of his recent album titled Damn.
I love this song because
I wish we could play the whole thing,
but I know we can't,
but it changes so many different times.
It started off slow,
changed it a little bit again.
Now it's got this heavy beat
and then it changes again.
The jazzy kind of feel here
and Bono's featured on it.
Let's hear this, right,
because this features you too.
Yeah.
Yeah. This country is to be a sound of drum and bass. You close your eyes to look around.
Hail Mary, Jesus and Joseph. The great American flag is wrapped in drag with explosives.
Compulsive disorder, sons and daughters. Barricaded blacks in and borders look what you taught us it's murder on my street
your street back streets wall street corporate offices banks employees and bosses with
homicidal thoughts donald trump's in office we lost barack and promised to never doubt him again
but is america honest or do we bask in sin? Pass the chin, I mix it with American blood
Then bash your men
You crippin' or you married to blood?
I'll axe again
Oops, accident is nasty when
You set us up, then roll a dice to bet us up
You overnight the big rifles, then tell Fox to be scared of us
Game members or terrorists, etc., etc.
America's reflections of me
That's what America does
It's not a place
Bono
This song, I don't know if he chose Bono to be featured on this one
because of Sunday, Bloody Sunday
and the political message in that one
and this one obviously politically very heavy,
politically with Kendrick Lamar
and what he's talking about,
the current state of America.
But I love the collaboration.
I think it's...
Did you like the sound?
Very different, right?
This, by the way,
he name drops Barack Obama in that song.
And this is Barack Obama's favorite rapper,
Kendrick Lamar.
Oh, I did not know that.
Yep.
And one of my son's,
I need to say, one of my son's favorite
rappers as well. So I hear a lot of Kendrick
in this house. He's excellent.
He is so good. And my daughter, we had to watch
this MTV Video Music Awards
like I think it was Sunday night or something
and Kendrick opened it and it was the best
performance of the night. He's fantastic.
I missed the show. I saw, I recapped
it as a millennial, I guess.
I don't even... are you a millennial?
I don't,
you know,
I don't,
are you 30?
Yeah.
I think that's millennial.
I think that's definitely millennial.
I recapped it on social media,
so I didn't see it live,
but I saw the Instagram posts.
That's how you millennials,
uh,
yeah,
just information,
right?
That's why,
these sports highlight shows,
I'm always surprised there's,
we can speak about all those shows.
There's a lot of them.
And I'm surprised who's watching when my son goes and does all his stuff on YouTube.
He's not watching them.
I know.
And he's a sports fanatic, but I digress.
Let's kick out another jam.
What number are we on?
Well, because you had 11, this is actually number 9 coming up. Baby, love never felt so good.
And I died if it ever could.
Not like you hold me, hold me.
Oh, baby, love never felt so fine.
And I died if it ever might.
Not like you hold me, hold me. Thank you. Michael Jackson.
Love Never Felt So Good. But there's also some Justin Timberlake in here.
Yeah, featuring JT.
This song, hands down, guaranteed, no matter where I am, what mood I'm in,
it will get me smiling and dancing for sure.
Like, you saw me dancing in my seat, right?
So one of those as well, that if I'm ever like, ah, I need a little bit of pick-me-up,
I'll put it on, and it changes my mood instantly but it's it's an homage to MJ who's
fantastic an amazing artist obviously and and Justin I have a huge love for
Justin Timberlake I think when he was with NSYNC a lot of people just saw him
as a flat pop star that was produced but he's so talented we know now he's
hilarious he's a great at acting and being funny, but so talented at
singing and making music and producing music.
And so wanted to give a little homage
to him as well. Great collab,
which I believe, as eerie as
it is, was after MJ died
that this was a song that wasn't released
and Justin's voice was put
on top of it. So that's the posthumous
release for MJ. Yes. I believe.
Please don't quote me on that.
But great song.
Makes you dance.
I believe you're the first person
to put a Michael Jackson song
on their jam list.
I know.
We're in early days here.
11 or 12 people.
But nice and poppy.
I don't love all pop.
But this is a pop song
I can get behind 100%.
Also tied to that
little love affair
I had.
Which one?
I'm losing track
of them all.
I'm such a,
I'm such a,
serial monogamous?
Serial dater.
No,
the one with
the Ray LaMontagne.
Yes.
This,
him and I
had some fun
wine nights
hanging out
in downtown Toronto
listening and dancing
and music.
Here's a personal question.
How many relationships have you had
that lasted more than a year?
Two. That's it?
One with Marty, six years.
Marty, my friend's brother, Marty?
Your friend's brother, Marty. And one with another guy
that lasted four years. So two long
ones. And then the rest have been
just dating and figuring it out.
You're still very young, lots of time.
I don't feel that way, but I'll agree with you.
Well, from where I'm sitting, I don't know, 30 seems pretty young.
I hope you're right.
You're bobbing your head.
I feel like this song makes you dance in your seat too.
MJ makes me bob my head.
I can't,
I can't.
Like,
how can you,
whether you like the music or not,
how can this not put a smile on your face?
It's just like a happy,
cheery song.
And you're right about Justin Timberlake.
He's not my cup of tea.
I don't,
maybe there's a couple of Justin Timberlake songs where I think they're half decent.
I really don't,
I gotta say,
like,
he's very popular and his songs are big hits.
I don't ever, I'm not a big fan. I really don't. I got to say, he's very popular and his songs are big hits. I don't ever,
I'm not a big fan
of his style of music.
But where I'm going with this is
I think he's ridiculously talented,
whether it be dancing,
singing,
and all these SNL things
he does with The Lonely Island
is like he's funny too.
And my kids watch Trolls a lot
and he's a good voice actor in Trolls and singing
songs. I didn't even know he did voice acting. See? He's in Trolls. But you know what? I think
that's all an artist can ask is the respect of their talent. Doesn't mean you have to like it
though, but I think that's still a compliment to them where you can respect that they are talented
people. You know who absolutely loves Justin Timberlake? All the girls? Yeah. Well, Monica upstairs is a huge fan.
I feel you, Monica.
He's such a hottie too.
So I hear.
All right.
Another jam.
This is your 10th jam, but it's not your last jam.
You have 11 jams.
I don't even remember what it is.
Here we go.
Let's kick it.
Okay. My baby told me
You gotta get better if you ever wanna win
and I know that
but she not getting
any better man she just said
I still love her
cause I know
I was once there wearing
them shoes I'm still
hurting
cause the woman I love's
giving me the blues
I'm sitting here sober
but I wonder
what shape she'll find me in
I need her under
my skin
like a junkie needs heroin
and I'm never going back
to snaking
Chase the amount of money I spent
I could have bought the place
Not to mention that they know my face
And now it's hell
getting out the place
So I'm walking the streets
tonight
I'm catching some fireflies
Some would say that I'm living the lie.
But no more today, no more tonight.
You could say that I'm under the gun.
Nine million miles away from the sun.
Hesitated much too long.
But still having fun.
Hope you're having fun.
The revivalistsing Fireflies.
Oh, I found this song because one day I was on my Spotify
and I have some of the revivalists and I just decided to shuffle all
because what I do often when I get on Spotify,
I pick the songs and the albums I know and I listen to the same songs. So I thought, why not explore, shuffle all
and see what I like. And this song was like the sixth one and I
was tempted to skip through a couple. I was like, I don't think I'm going to be into this. And I paused
on this one and I fell in love with it as well. I was like, wow, I love this sound.
I like the bluesy feel it has. There's a country
feel to this. Country feel too.
And I'm not a huge country fan
in the sense that I'm not educated
in terms of the music.
But every time I hear a good country song,
I love it.
I just don't go out of my way to listen
or to find new music.
It's got a country feel,
a bit of a bluesy feel.
I love this guy's voice.
And same thing, kind of fun,
fun song. So Revivalist, great job. I'm so glad I found this.
Yeah, it definitely has that modern country feel. Like I feel like I'd be in a pickup truck maybe
listening to this track. But if you listen to their other music it still has
this kind of feel but not quite it's a little less country a little more rock
so I love the combo but he's got like a correct me if I'm wrong but do you hear
a twang in his voice like absolutely yeah yeah and he gives it right here
fun song though Very fun
And I love
The same with the lyrics
You know he's
Begging for a girl back
I just
It's just
Fun
You know 80% of the great songs
Are based on that premise
You know
Love songs
Yeah
You love songs for sure
But begging for
Your girl back
I mean
I'm trying to think what the percentage
would be for non-love songs what like three maybe but seriously aren't they all love songs
a lot of music is love songs so that's for sure that's for sure probably a small percentage i
love this too this guitar riff this is the type of band I would love to see live.
I like this kind of...
I got a little Skinner coming off of this.
I got a little, little, little, little,
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Freebird vibe coming off of this.
Yes.
Won't you fly me, Freebird.
I don't have Lynyrd Skynyrd on my top 10,
but that would be in the short list as well.
Maybe Tuesday's Gone.
That's an underappreciated
lynyrd skynyrd track i would love to hear yours but we're gonna save that you can come back and
co-host mine hepsy wants the gig but i'd give it to you i would well i would 100 do it i would love
to co-host your top 10 you're you're the one telling stories this time no more we're gonna
make that happen i can't believe this is my 10th, but really 9th song because I cheated.
I can't believe I didn't know you cheated until
you told me what you wanted to be last, and I realized
I didn't have it. I can't believe that's a
great story in itself, but the best story in this
whole podcast, this is, I'm going to have to
re-listen to this one. This is a crazy one.
I did press record, yes I did.
Okay, thank God. That whole Marty
Tim thing, it's still kind of,
I'm still kind of, I'm going to send it to Marty.
I'm still computing that.
Let's hear your final jam. guitar solo In my place, in my place Were lines that I couldn't change
I was lost, oh yeah
And I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
I was lost, oh yeah
Yeah, how long must you wait, boy?
Yeah, how long must you wait for me?
Yeah, how long must you wait for me?
For me
Coldplay, In My Place.
Old Coldplay, old school.
Chris Martin.
Love the albums Rush of Blood to the Head and Trouble.
Or was the album Yellow?
No, the album was called Rush of Blood to the Head.
Parachutes.
Parachutes was the one where Yellow is featured.
I love both of those albums.
It's funny because I didn't realize this until now. Listen to
the lyrics. This is a big lyrics one for me.
And it bookends the first song
by Big Wreck. I love this one
because, you know,
yeah, how long must I wait for it? I was
lost. I was lost. Crossed lines I shouldn't
have crossed. I love the
honesty in it and I also feel like
everyone can relate to
this feeling that Chris is
singing about,
about just being a little lost and,
you know,
looking back and trying to figure things out and how not to do what you did
in the past and,
you know,
figuring life out.
Hearing Coldplay makes me think,
here's a pro tip for you.
If you ever want to make me cry,
the final scene from the first season
of Ricky Gervais' series,
Derek.
Oh.
It's set to Coldplay's Fix You.
Oh.
I will cry every time.
Even thinking about it now,
I'm going to tear up.
But that's just,
there's some great Coldplay tracks.
You know,
it's kind of an easy band,
kind of an easy band to hate.
I think there's a popular consensus
because they're so big.
Same thing happened with U2, I think.
But beautiful
songs, especially those two
albums you mentioned. Yes, especially those first
two, and they've definitely changed their sound.
But I love Chris and the band so much
that I, like you about Justin,
I don't really love their new sound,
but I respect them, and
I love their first two albums.
So they will always have a special place in my heart.
What album is Shiver on?
Is that Russian Blood to the Head?
Yes, yes.
That's one of my favorite Coldplay songs.
There's not a bad song on their first two albums.
I can listen to them back to back.
And I do.
So what a nice way to end, I think, for this great song.
Sophia, I'm without words to express how enjoyable that was.
That was so fun for me too.
And I felt like a kind of a double cup.
We had a,
like a deep dive and found out some things about your life,
your professional life, your personal life.
And then we got to hear you kick out the jams and you got a bonus jam in
there and you had some Drake in there and I loved it.
And thank you very much for doing this.
Thank you for having me.
I'm not, it's not just lip service, but I would love to come back and I loved it. And thank you very much for doing this. Thank you for having me. I'm not,
it's not just lip service,
but I would love to come back and co-host.
But if that spot's taken,
I'll come back anyway.
No,
Hebsey's lobbying for it,
but I haven't,
I haven't given it to him yet.
I am.
Do I have to fight arm wrestling?
I might sell tickets if that happens.
And yet tell Marty,
I went to school with Tim and I say hi and
that story that I told in two episodes ago about Sex Pistols, real motherfucking deal,
that happened. Okay, this all happened.
So Tim introduced you to the line of music and Marty introduced me to Journey and many
other songs not featured on this top ten but Marty taught me about music I love, too, so how funny.
Now that I'm thinking about it, this is going to sound terrible,
but as a young man in grade 7 and 8,
I thought Tim had a hot mom.
Oh my gosh, Marty used to talk about it
all the time, how all his friends
crushed on Marcia, his mom,
and she's still super hot.
You can add me to the list.
And that brings us
to the end of our 261st show.
You can follow me on Twitter.
I'm at Toronto Mike.
Sophia is at Sophia Yerksdovich.
I know, I need a different Twitter handle.
See if Sophia J is taken.
Our friends at Great Lakes Brewery are at Great Lakes Beer
and propertyinthesix.com is at Brian Gerstein.
See you all next week.
But I'm a much better man for having known you.
But I'm a much better man for having known you Oh, you know that's true because
Everything is coming up
Rosy and gray
Yeah, the wind is cold
But the smell of snow
Wants me today
And your smile is fine
And it's just like mine
And it won't go away
Cause everything is rosy and gray
