Welcome to episode 501 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything.
Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, Palma Pasta, StickerU.com,
and Capadia LLP CPAs.
and Capadia LLP CPAs.
I'm Mike from torontomike.com,
and my guest this week is Netflix star Stu Stone.
Yes.
And Twitter Canada's own Cam Gordon.
Hello.
This is crazy. Hello. This is crazy.
Yeah.
501, get ready for some fun, fun, fun.
Do you remember, we're all similar age, but remember the Bud and Fly 501s?
Yes, of course.
They had all those constant ad campaigns brainwashing us.
Yeah.
I realized the orange tab I was wearing from Byway would not be sufficient.
I needed to upgrade to the 501 blues.
501 button down.
I feel like there's a Seinfeld bit about that,
like Zippers and Flies and Male Anatomy and whatnot.
I think that there's something about Mary.
I think you're thinking of there.
Yeah, everything gets caught up in the zipper.
That doesn't happen with the button fly.
No, no.
But I remember they did have very nice advertisements.
The black and white sexy people undoing their buttons.
Yeah, and I have to say I bought in.
I wore button fly.
Yeah, me too.
As I grew up, I realized it was impractical.
I haven't worn button fly in a long time.
I don't think they make them anymore.
Are they still around?
I don't know.
I think button fly went the way of Crystal Pepsi.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Both good products, but yeah.
Yeah, but I think, yeah,
Crystal, I thought, yeah,
might have made a comeback recently.
I feel they keep bringing
these retro beverages.
Orbits?
No, you're thinking of Orbits?
No, Zima.
Oh, Zima.
What about,
is Jolt Cola still around?
Jolt is around.
Jot, Kot.
Well, they just brought back
Clearly Canadian.
That's good.
Right.
Yeah, that was a big seller back at Wonderland where I worked there. Jot, cot. They just brought back Clearly Canadian. That's good. That was a big seller back at Wonderland
where I worked there.
There'd be the 16-year-old trying to impress his girlfriend
with splurge.
Like a strawberry one.
It was fucking like seltzer.
Remember those Sarasota wine coolers?
I used to drink those thinking I could get drunk.
Were these the ones you'd buy?
Yeah, you could buy them at
Miracle Mart or something. 0.001 percent alcohol or something like that sarasota
yeah yeah sarasota wine coolers right the jolt was we were told it was like twice the sugar and
three times the caffeine or something so we all thought it was like our our cocaine or it was
like our crack like in the schoolyard you had had a jolt. It was like, whoa. Can you handle that?
I feel like Brio was like that.
Brio?
Brio was disgusting.
Only unless you're in Italy, I think that's what it is.
Well, it was also a big seller at Tony's Pizza.
Did you ever eat at Tony's?
Hey, I just want to say something.
I think we talked about this last time,
but as you get older, your palate changes
and you start to like things that you hated as a kid.
I bet you if I revisited Brio as an adult, I'd probably like it.
Because as a kid, I just thought it was gross.
And now I probably would like it.
I think it's like vaguely sophisticated.
Because it's like it's not from around here.
It's like an Italian beverage.
Yeah, like you can pretend you're in The Godfather 4 or something.
There you go.
Sipping on your Brio.
Tab, you've had Tab.
Yeah, Tab.
Schweppes and all that stuff.
That's just ginger ale, man.
Vernors, very distinct.
Mug root beer.
Yeah, yeah, my mug's still around.
New York seltzer, black cherry.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I used to like peeling the label off.
Yeah, me too.
Me too.
I knew we had something in common.
Sophistication.
You know, about two years ago, I'll have to let your listeners know, I stopped drinking
pop or soda as they call it.
Carbonated beverages.
I stopped it altogether.
And now I'm exclusively vitamin water.
Anything carbonated.
But now I just recently, I guess we're veering off topic here, but I bought some of those new Perrier.
They have these new Perrier products that have like a little fruit splash in them.
Yes.
I saw it in Home Hardware yesterday.
I bought a sixer.
Mandarin orange.
Yeah, I bought a sixer, so I'll let you know.
I don't consider that to be pop, though.
Okay, but if you enjoy that, there's a really good sale on that
at the Home Hardware in the Cloverdale Mall.
Like I was there yesterday, and it was like, I don't know,
two bucks for a six pack,
like Perrier flavored.
They're blowing it out everywhere.
I know.
I think what happens is when they have large quantities of something that
does not sell.
It must've been in the gardening section.
Home hardware,
this particular one anyway,
swoops in and buys it at like a discount and then offers it.
It's just kind of winners.
Like a blowout.
Yeah.
Like there's a winners in Cloverdale
too. I gotta go over to the Cloverdale mall.
It all comes full circle. A field trip right after this.
But you're not a weest.
You're not a West End boy.
Not yet, but if I go to your sponsor
Toronto Real Estate in the 6.
Yeah, Property in the 6.
Property in the 6, yes, exactly.
Oh, can we open with a question from him because it ties it nicely
to this Netflix thing.
Cam and I both wanted to congratulate you on the huge chuck d uh episode oh thank you absolutely what did you get shocker that was amazing i know you were hyping up a big surprise fantastic you
delivered on the surprise that's legendary stuff man yeah listen that wasn't actually the surprise
no just kidding and yeah oh one of my favorite like musicians of all time like uh
across all genres you're a big public enemy guy massive public enemy guy i i thought it was a
great listen and i'm biased because you know we're all friendly here but right that was really
hearing chuck d talk about like windsor and like winnipeg and like what like what a treat like his
canadian geography was like kind of incredible. Right. No.
And somebody tweeted me,
who the hell was it?
Crap.
Chris,
this friend of mine,
Chris tweeted me that,
or messaged me that just hearing Chuck D say Sudbury was like a dream come true.
Like,
like now,
if you ever wanted to check a song of Chuck D saying Sudbury,
now you have it.
Like I made it happen. I did that. I was at that show, by the way. In Sudbury. Not in it like i made it happen i was at that show by the way
in sudbury not in sudbury the one that you were at yeah it was uh it was incredible but when it
first started i was like wait a minute is this not chuck d i was like who's this guy and then i was
like this isn't public enemy and then he came out and i was like oh okay okay because i did i had
left by then believe it or not uh I was there for Mishimi.
Were you there already for Mishimi?
No, I saw Rock from Boot Camp Click.
That was awesome.
And then I saw Raekwon and Ghostface Killa.
And then I saw a little bit of Chuck D,
but things started to get a little out of hand.
And DJ Jazzy Jeff was there.
Jazzy Jeff, he's amazing.
He's an incredible guy and an incredible DJ.
Do you know him personally
i've been around him let's just say around him because uh it's really cool okay so let me tell
the people we gotta set this up here okay well thank you the chuck d was a like a so cool that
you got to interview chuck big big moment fucking list that's got to be a bucket list thing for you
yeah i'm ready to die prepare to die you're schmucking around with stew and chuck g very
very good that is good yeah i don't know if you know like this is a this exclusive uh mike You're schmucking around with Stu and Chuck G. Very good.
That is good.
I don't know if you know, this is exclusive, Mike.
Cameron's actually not my first name.
It's Charles.
Is that right?
Only somebody who went to high school with me.
So did he go by Charles when you knew him? I called him Chuck a few times.
So he's Chuck G.
It didn't stick.
Well, it would only come out when there'd be a substitute teacher.
And they'd read the attendance.
I'd just be cowering.
I'd try to go to the bathroom.
This is an exclusive, though.
Yeah, Chuck G.
I know.
But yeah, he's, you know, listen, he's also an icon as well.
Not as different than Chuck D.
Of sorts.
But, you know, we hosted, the last time we would have been on live microphones together,
other than, of course, Cam's awesome podcast.
We used to host
a sports show together when we were teenagers.
And Newton Cable, which I think we talked about
the first time it came on.
Stephen Kersner.
Mike Wilner was on it.
And if people don't know the name Stephen Kersner,
we can tell them it's Ed the Sock.
Bacon K-Fave there, Ed the Sock.
Bubby's Kitchen was on that back in the day.
Is that true?
Yeah.
Yeah, Wilner had a show with a guy named Aaron Lobel,
I want to say.
What did they talk about?
Oh, I guess.
Were they sports also?
Yeah, and I think it was called Let's Talk Sports.
Well, I think that's where the idea
for Overtime Sports Talk came from
because you had seen it.
You'd seen this other sports talk show
and you're like, we should do one.
Like, it was something like that.
Like, if this Wilner guy can do it, you could do it.
I didn't even know Wilner had a show
on Newton Cable. That's unbelievable.
I never knew that. Check the Wikipedia page.
It's all there. That's unbelievable. I did not know that
because then we could have crossed paths with him so much
sooner. We probably did.
He's all around.
I got him on a bike. He took
a bike ride when he was in Tampa
and he tweeted
that it was my influence he is one of the most misunderstood personalities he's in your movie
okay this is gonna be full circle so let me play the uh brian i love i love wilner by the way
i think we all in this room is i don't even know if chuck g here is a big baseball guy but do we
all love oh my god he's like the Seattle Pilots.
He's an almanac.
All right.
Well, I apologize.
He's a stat-based God.
I'm just learning about, I almost called him Shock G.
You know, Shock G.
He put the side on your panties.
I was going to say, you know, he was Humpty Hump, you know.
Humpty Hump was not a different guy.
That was Shock G with a fake nose.
No.
Come on.
It was.
You didn't know that?
Okay.
This is like an Andre the Giant, giant machine thing.
Pokeroo and like the male host of the day.
This is bullshit.
All right.
Let's hear from Brian
and let's talk about this new found fame on Netflix,
Stu's Enjoying.
Thanks to Mike Wilner's.
Let's hear it.
Propertyinthe6.com
Hi, Stu and Cam.
Brian Gerstein here.
Sales representative with PSR Brokerage
and proud sponsor of Toronto Might.
The first phase of Galleria Malconas
will launch just one month from now.
We will easily sell out.
So if you want a shot at getting one,
PSR is selling it exclusively.
Call or text me at 416-873-0292 if you are considering it as an end user or investment property.
Soon I will have the pricing and floor plans to pass on.
Stu, I never collected baseball and hockey cards as a kid for any profit motive.
Back in the 70s, it just wasn't done for that purpose.
The vast majority of my cards are worn out from throwing them against doors.
When did it all change?
And cards turn from being just personal collector items
to investments?
And do you wish in a way that it never did?
Because I have no regrets having always opened up
all the packs and worn them out.
That's a great question.
What's your documentary called?
Jack of All Trades.
And it's about baseball cards.
He must have known that.
Yeah, of course he knew that.
What a coincidence.
You look like the type that would know this.
He listens to the show.
This is your third time coming on
talking about Jack of All Trades.
You're just milking that one.
I'm trying to become a five-time get-the-jacket.
Willer's got the jacket.
I need to get that jacket, But we're working on it.
Listen, first off,
I think that he,
that advertisement that he snuck into his
questionnaire, I thought that that was genius.
And you take your shot, man.
All it takes is for one fucking person to text
this guy that they want to buy a condo, and this
paid off.
You don't know what I'm charging him.
Whatever you charge isn't enough if he sells one.
Now, God bless him.
And as far as the baseball cards go, you know, listen,
it all started to change once the baby boomers went to go look for their old cards.
And when they went to go try to find their Mickey Mantle cards,
they had all been thrown in the garbage.
So if you wanted one, it cost a lot of money.
In the early 80s, a Mickey Mantle rookie was selling for a couple thousand dollars, it cost a lot of money in the early 80s a mickey manor rookie
was selling for a couple thousand dollars which is a lot of money in the superman one uh superman
action comics there's another one that was selling for a couple thousand dollars which now it's worth
like you know 23 million or some crazy number i don't that that's probably three nicholas cage
has one yes it's a huge thing and but you know again a couple thousand dollars that was a lot
of money so that's kind of sort of how the speculators sort of sort of started came into the baseball card world
and sort of speculated for the wrong reasons because the mickey mantel card was worth money
because it was rare the don mattingly 1984 tops rookie card is not rare because everybody's saving
it and putting into a plastic so that's. Like, do you wish this never happened?
I mean, I don't wish it never happened because then my life,
well, I don't know, my life would be completely different
if there was no baseball card market because that was my family business.
My dad had up to 11 stores at one point selling baseball cards
and comic books and posters and schmattas, you know.
So that was my life.
And even after he got out of the business,
I would say for an extra year after that,
and Cam may have been with me,
we used to go to this card shop.
We would ride our bikes and buy cards
at some other guy's card shop.
Yeah, there was one at Thornhill Square.
That's what I mean, yeah.
But the guy would like hover over you.
American coin and stamp.
Yes.
And then there was a store across the street.
Some other guy opened up.
Oh, Green Diamond Sports? it was on green lane yes yeah that one that one was
sort of okay but we were already that was towards like the tail end yeah but we go down to legends
of the game yeah sometimes too and i would buy cards so i was still into it and you know what
listen if he opened his cards that's what they were made for at that point but i bet you you
know if he would have saved a couple of those Gretzky's he probably had,
maybe he doesn't need to sell a condo this month.
Stu, when did the whole convention scene, like, start up?
Like, when was the first collectibles convention?
Do you know?
I would say in the 70s is when they probably started to pop up.
Like, very, very small, very niche, very small things.
But then once, you know, 82, 83 hit, there started to be, it very very small very niche very small things but then once you know 82 83 hit
there started to be it was starting to be that's when the bubble started okay now when 1984 85 86
now it starts to get big by 87 it's huge yeah and they're trying to bring in like talent yeah stuff
right and so you used to be able to go the draw to get people to the card shows in the early days
was they would have mickeyle or Whitey Ford.
Usually they would be a package together.
The two of them would come to a show and they'd sign autographs for Reggie Jackson, Pete Rose or whoever.
But now with the cards themselves, you don't even need, you know, people just go for the cards.
Yeah.
Well, I remember, Stu, you and I working a few of these.
We did.
Like the Chimo Hotel.
We sure did.
And the Constellation.
We had our own booth and weird shopping malls.
Get out of here.
We would set up at card shows
in a shitty hotel.
Do you remember we met
Mike Pekka's mom?
Mike Pekka's mom, you remember.
I know Mike Pekka.
It was like, oh, my son plays
junior for some team.
She gave us an autographed card.
She had a whole stack of them.
Yeah.
Because I think we thought he was someone else.
Like there was someone else.
Like Ricci?
Mark Recchi?
Yeah, it was something like Ricci, Recchi, and there was like Joe Ricci.
Like it was something like that.
But like Mike Pekka, this was before he had played in the NHL.
Before he was a superstar.
He used to do those commercials
for Wegmans or something
that aired on the Buffalo stations
or something like that.
Hi, I'm Mike Pekka.
Coming today for Clearly Canadian
on sale at Home Hardware.
So how the hell did you get this dock
that you made?
Did someone else make it with you?
Yeah, I have a whole,
the whole, everybody.
You didn't make it yourself
because that's how I'd roll.
I'd do it all myself.
See, and that's a lot harder to do.
No, I worked with my partner and my brother-in-law, Adam Rodness.
We have a company, Five7 Films.
So we do all of our movies, him and I.
And then my sister Carrie was a producer on the film as well.
And Harv Glazer was a co-director.
He grew up across the street from me.
And it made a lot of sense for him to get involved for uh reasons that your view your
listeners will know because in november it's going to be on netflix okay so in canada okay that's big
news i wish i had a sound effect okay so so because uh it's on u.s netflix right now correct
how the hell did you get about yeah how did you make that happen that's amazing does wilner know
he's streaming on uh u right now? He does now.
Shit.
Is he going to ask you for some money?
No.
I do owe him.
I'm trying to fix him up with somebody
so if there's anybody out there...
That's how you pay back your talent.
Only Wilner. You're like a pimp.
But Wilner, he's a special case.
But listen... What does that evenner, he's a special case. But listen.
What does that even mean?
He's a special, you know, I want to go above and beyond for Wilner.
Okay.
Like whatever he needs.
Sure.
You know, if he needs women, jewelry.
It is kind of amazing.
Finest wines.
Whatever he needs.
Just if I may.
Mike Wilner is in a documentary that is now on U.S. Netflix.
Correct.
Alongside, you know, The Office, for example.
Wilner is up there.
And he's in it a lot.
He maybe underplays his role, but I think he plays a very key role in the film.
He's great.
So how did it happen?
How did Netflix sign up?
How did I get Wilner?
Yeah.
Hey, I can get Wilner.
But how the hell did you get this thing on Netflix?
That's huge, right?
Congrats.
Come on. It's insane. Like, pat yourself thing on Netflix? That's huge, right? Congrats. Come on, it's insane.
Like, pat yourself on the back.
That's amazing.
Does Cam have anything on US Netflix right now?
Maybe I thanked him in the credits.
Yeah, a few executives.
He's on Twitter.
That's it.
Okay, tell me.
So it's funny because nobody wanted a baseball card movie,
and our sales team was having a very tough time getting a sale.
We were lucky because we had a sale from Super Channel in Canada
helped us finance the movie and get it made.
So Super Channel is already showing the movie.
Not First Choice, but Super Channel.
Super Channel is showing it right now,
and it has been for the last two years.
Is that a Western Canada thing?
I think they're out of Alberta.
But you get the channel on Rogers.
You just don't watch it i guess
okay you know some people do it sounds like it's for rich people it is for rich it is for very
wealthy people hopefully they'll text for a condo but uh an investment property or they can even
live in it anyway trying to get the sale in the states was impossible nobody wanted everybody
passed nobody wanted this movie we submitted it to a million film festivals. We got into
two. The Calgary Underground Film Festival,
which was great. I had a good
time. And one in San Jose called
Cinequest. Every other film festival
turned us down. We tried to even get into
the Jewish Film Festival. They turned us down.
Any angle I could think of. Because they changed your name.
They said, go back to your original name. Exactly.
The Baseball Festival. We couldn't
get into anything.
Finally, we met with a company called Breakthrough Entertainment.
They are our distributor for all of the 5-7 Films movies.
We decided to team up with another company called Level Film,
who had some success with the Michael Moore documentaries,
and they were in the doc game.
They were monsters.
Maybe they knew something different, right?
And they didn't, and nobody wanted the movie and so we were all just collectively
like you know what fuck it let's just put it up on itunes here's where it gets crazy so for the
last two years i've been doing social media on cam's twitter platform and other you know social
media platforms with a jack-of-all-trades instagram page and a twitter account and it's very active i
quite enjoy it active but it's a small but mighty group of people that follow i don't have thousands
of followers i have 1500 followers 2000 followers nothing but it's people who are actually engaged
in loving it and this is a great case study for cam to take back to work when he goes in tomorrow
but but when we released it whatever davis is when we released it on iTunes, those people were the ones that supported the movie on iTunes.
And when a Canadian documentary sells 1,000 downloads on iTunes, alarms go off.
Oh, yeah.
You literally tripped an alarm and they're like, investigate, investigate.
Right.
Literally, it goes up to charts.
Now we're on the charts.
We're like number 20 and we're high-fiving and getting ready to have a parade.
Yeah.
So Jeff Garlin, who is uh dad on the goldbergs okay yeah but curb your enthusiasm enthusiasm of course
uh he plays uh larry's agent he saw the movie on his itunes because once we made the top 20 now
anybody who opens their itunes now we're in like scroll yes it's like this like above the full yes
so it's like a huge fucking thing.
He sees the logo of the movie,
which is, you know,
a baseball card fan would see that logo
and be like,
oh, I gotta watch that.
And so he watched it
and he tweeted out
or Instagrammed out
or something like that.
He tweeted out
because we got cams here.
He tweeted it out.
I can verify he tweeted it out.
He tweeted it out
and he picked a picture
of the logo and said,
I love this movie.
And when he did that,
the movie went from number 20 to number two.
Wow.
The girl from Level Film happened to be on the phone with her Netflix,
her buyer at Netflix, and was like, hey, listen,
I know you guys already passed on this twice.
I just thought I'd let you know.
You know, this Jack of all trades movie is like number two on iTunes.
It's the biggest seller we've ever had.
It's, you know, they were like, huh?
And the next day they made an offer. two on itunes it's the biggest seller we've ever had it's you know and they were like huh and the
next day they made an offer and two weeks later we were on netflix and trending like number number
one so that was that was like in the spring no that was just happened man we came out in july
in may we went on the charts by july we were so it happens that quickly i've never seen it happen
that quickly in my life this is wow and you're still slumming it on toronto mike like i thought you'd be able to reach by now well you don't make like
millions of dollars for having a movie on netflix but i'll tell you you get millions of impressions
that you would have never had meaning you can't buy a condo with impressions no you can't unless
he maybe he takes impressions call him i do a great macho man impression we're gonna get to that
yes we're gonna get to that but anyway so that's what it was so it just goes to show you you know
engagement is everything.
And it's not about, you know, a lot of people are fooled and think that the magic sauce of social media is like a huge number, which, you know, it is sexy to have a lot of followers and have a big number.
But it's that engagement, man.
That's that's what really works.
You're preaching to the choir, man.
Honestly, 5000 podcast listeners is better than 100,000. No offense, Cam.
Better than 100,000 Twitter followers. Well, I'm saying also No offense, Cam. Better than 100,000 Twitter followers.
Well, I'm saying also like it's just amazing.
It's like the most organic thing that I've ever –
you know, I've done some pretty crazy shit in my life and career or whatever.
Bob Saget?
Yeah, the Bob Saget thing is a perfect example.
The CircleCircle.com video had like 11 million views when YouTube just started.
It's incredible.
I've had some stuff like this happen in my life,
but I've never seen something like this before
where this thing was dead in the water,
dead to rights.
We already had our screenings in Toronto.
I already came on Toronto Mike twice to promote it.
It's dead.
And now it's alive and very well.
Thanks to Jeff Garland.
Thanks to Jeff Garland.
And thanks to the people who follow the social media pages and supported the movie.
And now I'm happy to, the Super Channel deal ends in November.
So that's when the Netflix will kick in.
So maybe I'll come back here in November to do something with you to promote again.
I can't wait to be able to tweet at my passionate, engaged followers and say,
hey, if you have Netflix, and most of them do, you can now press a button.
And watch it. And the Stewstone doc is just going to play on your television. Exciting, Hey, you can, if you have Netflix and most of them do, you can now press like a button and watch it.
The stew stone doc is just going to play on your television.
Exciting.
Right,
Cam?
I think the crossover between the Toronto Mike audience and the, uh,
Jack of all trades will be first of all,
then diagrams.
It's pretty much the same circle.
I would have to say that like facetious or not,
it's true because the story is a Toronto centric story.
Right. and it focuses
around baseball card shops that were in the toronto area and and and a whole the whole thing
took place in toronto and what i like about this doc with no spoilers at all is that it really is
sold as a baseball card doc and then like you're into this baseball card doc and you don't even
see it coming no what happens next that's the teaser for when this thing's on uh on netflix by the way
we owe cam gordon for having us even know each other like because he came on did i i came on
first did i mention it like the first time you were talking about uh famous people from you know
yeah and you said you went to high school of astoney, and you mentioned his credits were Donnie Darko and the Magic School...
My Pet Monster, that's what it was.
Maybe the Magic School Bus, maybe.
I actually just found out this weekend
another famous Thornley alumni.
And this is a big one.
Current mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson.
Is from Thornhill.
From Thornhill, went to Thornley.
He just came out of the closet this weekend.
Okay, speaking of just coming out of the closet,
what a wonderful segue.
Congratulations to him, though.
Congrats to him.
I mean, we all knew.
I mean...
Sure.
I don't know enough.
It's a bit older.
A bit older.
I do know that...
I don't even know who you're talking about.
It's like this was in the 70s.
Oh, that guy.
That Jim Watson.
You don't know this guy.
But you might know Scott MacArthur, who ironically...
He went to Thornley?
He took over for Wilner.
So it's all about Mike Wilner here.
Mike Wilner, Jay's talk host, gets to do play-by-play, his dream job.
Not gets to, he earned it.
Right, he earned it.
Well, what's the difference?
I'm just sticking up for Wilner.
I'm not even trashing Wilner.
Stop trashing Wilner, okay?
My followers trash Wilner. I'm not even trashing Wilner. Stop trashing Wilner, okay? My followers trash
Wilner. I defend him. So there was an opening at Rogers Sportsnet to have a Jay's Talk host,
and they poached this fine talk radio host from the competition, 1050 TSN. They took a guy named
Scott MacArthur. Scotty Mac. Scotty Mac, we know him as. And he now hosts, although he hasn't done
it in a while because he's filling in for vacationing people.
And I think he's destined for much bigger things.
But he came on for episode 499.
This is 501.
500 had no guests, so he's really the last guest I had.
And he did a tremendous Macho Man Randy Savage impression.
Yeah.
Can we listen to him?
Sure.
And then talk about Cam and I doing impressions? Yeah, yeah. We have a few. Yeah. Can we listen to him? Sure. And then talk about...
Cam and I doing impressions?
Yeah, yeah.
We have a few.
That's why we're here.
Andre is coming up.
Here's Scotty Mac from episode...
You do a good Steven Riegel, don't you?
499 doing Macho Man Randy Savage.
Yeah, Toronto Mike.
Yeah, heaven.
Scotty Mac on the podcast.
Yeah, for a cup of coffee cup of
coffee it was delicious
it was a good conversation
and I'm gonna have to
get back
Scottie Mac is leaving I gotta
get him back 30 seconds you take
it over Toronto Mike because if you don't
he might be Randy Savage
the rest of the way
yeah that's good that is not bad If you don't, you might be Randy Savage the rest of the way.
That's good.
He's got the good.
That is not bad.
It's better than it should be.
And I forgot to pull it. A lot of people do drunken Randy Savage, and 90% of them are terrible.
That was a good one.
Can you do an example of a bad Randy Savage?
The thing that he does really well is that, yeah.
I think because he's also like a parvot.
Like a savage would speak really quiet.
It's like, damn.
Like it was kind of like that.
Like it wasn't over the top.
His speaking voice is like that.
Yeah.
If you've ever heard him just like his regular voice would be like, yeah.
Nice to see you.
Like he's almost like a Steven Tyler.
Is he?
Like a lot of like
like kind of stuff like that what do you mean steven tyler's like hey nice to meet you baby oh
well that's more like james brown okay anyway i mean like savage is the thing that i remember
his is the hotline that which i called as a kid i don't know if you ever called the hotline no it
was like one nine seven six two nine two who you talking to elizabeth why it's you macho man oh yeah
that was the okay i don't remember that yeah and like elizabeth he was gonna knock the crap out of
her if she was talking to you know corporal kirschner or mr wonderful or something
who you talking to, Elizabeth?
Jake the Snake. That would have been a
whole different commercial. Yeah, that's a
different type of hotline, I think.
Everybody's got their kinks.
Rest in peace to the Macho Man, by the way.
Seriously.
And Miss Elizabeth.
Yes, and Miss Elizabeth.
Is Corporal Kirshner still with us?
I watched the HBO Andre the Giant documentary.
Ah, yes.
And Hulk Hogan does a pretty good macho man impression
when he's kind of talking about...
Yeah.
Yeah.
When he slammed the 700-pound giant brother.
He didn't know it was a shoot.
Yeah, I didn't know.
It could have gone either way.
It was supposed to be a two and a half count
and he was going to let him
kick out
and he never kicked out.
Andre told me to slam.
He said, slam me, boss.
Figure it out in the ring.
You guys,
before we proceed here,
do any of you want to do
an impression here?
Yeah, Cam, you got it, Andre.
I could do one too,
but I always liked yours.
Yeah, well,
I feel like this would
also like in high school,
Stu would come up behind me,
pull my hair, pull my hair,
pull my hair, give me like a double headbutt similar to like Andre the Giant, on Lenny Poffo in the Saturday Night's Main Event circuit.
But like seriously concussing me.
Cam was like six feet tall and I was like four feet tall.
So for me to be able to even execute this headbutt is pretty, it's an act of athleticism that should be applauded.
But you'd be like bellowing while you, like it was just, like I would get legitimately like pissed.
No, of course, Leaping Lanny Poffo is related to Macho Man.
Macho Man's brother.
Poffo's.
Poffo's, by the way.
I think he bloodied him.
Yeah, he did with that headbutt.
It was a battle royal on Saturday night's main event.
Andre does the headbutt to Poffo,
and Poffo's bleeding from his skull,
and he's like dead on the outside.
Like profusely.
Yeah, and so I would do that to camp.
Okay, let me hear it.
Hold on.
It doesn't work.
You laugh.
Hold on.
I will take the WLB off.
Stop it.
That's it. Ha, ha laugh. Hold on. I will take the WLB off shopping and stuff.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.
Ugh.
Oh, thank you. But it was mainly, remember when him, like, he was going to sell the speech.
Yeah, I got that speech.
The Ted DiBiase.
I got that speech.
I do present the belt to the million dollar man.
I'm the world's richest man, Red Dead Slappy.
I now surrender the belt to Mr. Ted Di the world's best resident scorpion.
I now surrender the belt to me.
I will squeeze
and squeeze
and squeeze.
No snake, Bobby.
No snake.
What a disgusting individual.
Andre?
What a piece of shit.
Look at me.
And he like ripped off Hogan's shirt
and like the cross. Oh, and he was bleeding?
Yeah, that was a big moment. That was on like Piper's
pit, I think. That was the
heel turn. That was a big deal.
One more time.
That's really good. That's good.
I don't really do many impressions, though.
That's a real effort. That's good. I got real tears do many impressions, though. So, like, that's a real affair. That's good.
I got real tears.
Andre, rest in peace, man.
I know.
Why the, like, what just, what a legend.
Are you a wallopino?
In the doc, apparently a doctor said they could, like, stop this gigantism.
I can't remember the medical term for gigantism.
But they could, like, suspend it a bit so he could have a longer life.
And he turned it, he said, no, he didn't want any intervention. Like, he didn't want any intervention. He didn't want any surgery.
He was big into the self-medicating
with this prodded...
The wine? Drinking, yeah.
Speaking of that, if he were here,
if we were lucky that Andre the Giant...
It took me 500 episodes to get...
He wouldn't be able to get down these stairs.
He's no Leo Roudens.
Exactly.
Great legs brewing.
So, he could down He's no Leo Roudin. I'm going to pop a sauce. Exactly. Great Lakes Brewery. It's too small.
So he could down easily, I'd say, 30 bottles of this Great Lakes.
He'd have like a growler and it would look like a regular bottle.
Right.
But you gents, a six pack is sufficient, right?
You guys aren't giants here.
Cam's close, but no.
Please take home with you today this fresh craft beer courtesy of great legs brewery very
much and by the way guys uh at tmlx3 i saw you yeah we were both there yeah amazing unadvertised
i was like i was so excited to see you and i'm doing something similar but different tmlx4 is
september 19 from 6 to 9 p.m at the same uh great legs brewery i'm doing a live recording
and when people show up like yourselves i'll put you on the mics for a period of time so i'm going
to talk to everybody who wants to be on the recording so listeners former guests like
yourselves it's gonna it's gonna be amazing it's kind of like a vaudeville type thing it's gonna
be there was actually a guy that came up to me at the uh at your at the t at the event do you know that
can you say the letters tml3 tmlx3 yeah what's the x experience it's the toronto mic listener
wouldn't it be an e nope man a small e big x is cooler. Yeah, I agree. So at that, some guy came up to me, and he was like, hey, are you Stu?
I was like, yeah.
He's like, oh, my God.
I heard you on the show.
I loved it.
I was like, thanks, man.
So that was cool.
And there'll be more of that if you come back on September 19th.
Right in front of Cam's.
Cam had his date there with him.
That's right.
Boy, I impressed the hell out of her with that.
Is she still anonymous?
We can't.
She doesn't want her name on this.
Because she's a famous person.
Can we say? Sure. Is she famous?
Samantha Taylor from...
Tell us the
name of your girlfriend.
So people can say I never heard of her.
Yeah, Megan Fitzpatrick.
She works for the CBC.
Do you watch the CBC? The News World
one? Is she an anchor woman?
No.
She's a reporter
in the streets of Toronto.
That's so cool.
Yeah.
Did she come cover
TMLX4?
You can,
as an invited guest.
I can pitch it.
Get your PR team to.
Tallest couple,
by the way,
per capita is,
are these two.
I mean,
between the two of them,
you got about 12 feet.
Yeah,
yes.
We're both well suited.
Good heights.
I'm happy for you.
Okay.
Now,
Stu,
we did a lot of talking here.
Nice girl,
by the way.
I didn't realize that she was on the CBC.
You should have said something.
She was.
I mean,
to me,
I didn't know.
Okay.
I would have loved to have said,
hey,
I got a show on the CBC.
Now you know.
I could have been,
we could have had CBC small talk.
Yeah.
Which show did you have on the CBC?
I mean,
I was like, come on, where do I start?
Mr. Dress Up, The Friendliest Giant, Under the Umbrella Tree.
No, none of those.
I think the Edison Twins.
The Edison Twins was on TV.
Babar the Elephant.
Babar was a CBC smash.
Wayne and Schuster Show was on CBC.
Oh, I know.
So there you go.
But you weren't on those shows.
I was.
I was.
I was.
Were you really?
I was on Wayne and Schuster Show for six years. I was like, any time they had a kid, I know. So there you go. But you weren't on those shows. I was. I was. I was. Were you really? I was on Wayne and Schuster's show for six years.
I was like, anytime they had a kid, I was the kid.
I swear to God, look it up.
Did you know this, Cam?
No.
It's amazing.
I was on it from 1982 to 19, until he died.
And I was even part of the Gemini Awards, like when he died, tribute.
Amazing.
Yeah.
Wayne and Schuster's show.
I never doubted this guy.
CBC.
I've known him for like 30 years and that
like that's news to me that's amazing that's first
that's a first Cam what's the name of your
podcast the completely ignored
podcast yeah so I came
on recently
yeah you guys were both the same season
I believe so you have seasons
yeah it's just like
what is it about seasons lazy podcast
yeah like what would you just need a break?
It's mainly a timing thing
Keep it fresh
Keep people wanting more
It's a marketing thing
Toronto Mic, which is episode 501
is still in its one season
There is no season
You're more like a city TV everywhere
CP24
It wouldn't be Cam if it wasn't like a niche type of offering.
So, you know, whatever he's doing works for him.
Okay.
So I have to do a little real talk here.
Okay.
So I came on.
We'll get to you in a minute, Stu, when you came on.
But I was sort of like pleading my case for Shakespeare My Butt by Lois de Lalo.
Is that what I was doing?
Well, you're the host, right? Yeah, I mean
basically the completely ignored podcast. Everyone
picks an album. That was the album you picked?
Yeah, Stu came in. He talked about Radiohead,
OK Computer, and Mike, yeah.
Oh, that obscure indie darling.
That's what I said. It's like when you deal with him, you
have to know what you got.
That is not true. Believe me, it is
100% true. Because he's cooler than us.
That's what I'm saying. And it's going to be evident when we have our what's what's coming up so okay i know i'm i'm a bad host here
we never did we never did tell people what's going on what is this episode about anyway cam
challenged me publicly on twitter about uh to to to he challenged me yeah yeah we uh and we and we
got to talk we were going to kick the jams against
each other i think it had something to do possibly shakes you in my butt or mike you're you've had a
lot of guests recently you've had the pursuit of happiness you've had a little murray mclaughlin
a lot of can con greats um maybe even some stuff that's on my blog conversations starting andy kim
andy kim uh the great Gino Vannelli.
It might have been like out of Gino Vannelli.
And we said, you know, these are all great,
but what about if we took it down a notch?
Maybe some of the more forgotten.
No, that's not how it went at all.
No, you shut your mouth.
That's not how it went.
That's insane.
That's how it went in your brain.
Because that's how you operate.
What really happened?
We challenged each other to kick the jams off against each other and we were going to do some 90s thing because he had
heard me on your show doing the 90s count and he enjoyed it and we were going to do like oh let's
do a 90s thing right then when we went to your show and looked at your listeners we were like
hmm maybe we should do an 80s thing actually you know what that that is true that's okay
i was like i think that these people would probably like the 80s better. So why don't we do that?
Because they're old.
Well, no, it's just like, it seems like it was just like kids that are like a little
bit older than us in high school that they probably liked the 80s stuff more than the
90s stuff.
So maybe let's do that.
Cause Cam is an audiophile.
Is that the right term?
Sure.
He's an obsessed with music.
Always has been.
And I've always learned, I've learned, you know, dinosaur junior from him.
That's, that's one I'll give him credit for.
But, uh, you know, stuff like that. That was more of a Farbs farbsy thing no but like you kind of like co-signed it sure yeah
so so yeah because it was like if he said it was like yeah but then once you said it was good too
then yeah oh so you're each you're each getting to kick out five jams from the 80s but is there
any qualifiers it has to be a canadian song canadian song right and so we both obscure at
all or yeah i i called it a deeper understanding.
Okay.
Deeper understanding.
Right.
And so me, that's not how I do things.
I was telling him from Jump Street, you know, I'm going to be picking some stuff that changed
the culture of Canadian music when it dropped.
And then we'll play it.
You can tell us your story of why you picked it.
So we're battling basically top five versus top five. Oh, I dig it. And And then we'll play it. You can tell us your story, why you picked it. So we're battling basically
top five versus top five.
Oh, I dig it.
And that's going to be later.
It's like a sensibilities clash,
really, is what it is.
Before I get us back to
completely ignored.
If it was forgotten, though,
I would have come with
a different list
had that been the qualification.
Just so you know.
I would have gone with
some real obscure shit
like what Cam's going to come with.
But instead,
I'm trying to make your listeners happy.
You're keeping it real.
Yes.
I hear you.
Dude, come at me.
Okay.
Although it's not on the table right now, in the freezer, I do have a couple of lasagnas
from Palma Pasta.
I am.
Fantastic.
And I can't remember your orders, maybe because I never asked, but are you meat or veggie
lasagna people?
I'll eat meat.
I'll eat either.
Good. I got one meat, or veggie lasagna people? I'll eat meat. I'll eat either. Good.
I got one meat, one veggie.
I'll take the meat because I got veggie last time
and it disappointed a lot of people that were expecting meat.
I haven't been here in the Palma era.
So, I mean, it's all new to me.
I just give him the veggies.
Seems more his thing.
So, Palma pasta is authentic Italian food.
It's delicious.
Family-run business.
The pasta, the lasagna that i got last time was
amazing good because uh yeah they're they're proud sponsors of the program they want to make sure
everybody who comes on this show is well fed so i guess before you leave make sure you have your
lasagnas take it home with you i feel like you should heat up the lasagna before we get here
and then serve it you know eat eat it live on the show.
Like chew into the microphone.
It's got to thaw for 24 hours.
So no, I'm not ready for that.
But yeah, okay.
You got your lasagna.
Palmapasta.com to find out where they are in Mississauga and Oakville.
Also, they're on skip the dishes now.
So 24 hours, you got to thaw that thing?
So you got to make a commitment.
You know what?
Hey, I'm eating lasagna tomorrow.
Every time I've made it, I put it in the fridge the day before i was gonna make it so it would be in the freezer freezer freezer fridge and then the next day uh like 45 minutes
at like i don't know 350 or something and it's just delicious and unbelievable it's unbelievable
yeah it feels like you just someone just made it and we're a family of six and there's leftovers
like think about it and i'm i'm a pig yeah so it's amazing so thank you
palma you got your beer your palma pasta sticker you uh speaking yeah is it twitter twitter's going
to have a bricks and mortar store or something or something's happening um or is that there's
been room rumors about that i mean there's nothing like we haven't announced anything i mean we've
had kind of like you know pop-ups and okay so there's a rumor there might nothing, like we haven't announced anything. I mean, we've had kind of like, you know, pop-ups and...
Okay, so there's a rumor there might be one,
but we'll talk more when that's official,
when the press release comes out or whatever.
You haven't been here in the Palma Pasta era?
No.
Jeez.
They've been around since November, November 2018.
Wow.
So, Sticker U just opened up a bricks and mortar store on Queen Street.
Oh, muzzle tough.
And it's going to have a museum in the basement
which is the world's
largest sticker museum
and they've promised
to put a Toronto Mike
sticker in the museum.
Oh,
that's cool.
This is not a joke.
So once that's done,
I'm going to come over
and take a look.
Stickers used to be
the rage, man.
I know.
In the 80s,
I had a photo album.
Scratch and sniff stickers,
puffy stickers,
googly eye stickers.
I remember Garfield stickers.
Garfield,
Three Stooges,
Scooby Doo.
I had several
photo albums
full of stickers
yeah me too
me too
Puffy stickers
Puffy stickers
were great with googly eyes
there was Scratch and Smith
there's ones that were
like smelled bad
like there was the skunk one
that's right
or like garbage
it would just be like
stinky garbage
were there garbage
pale kid stickers
or was it just the cards
no the stickers
were the cards
there was also collectibles gang of-abrupted collectibles.
They'd be like in hostess chips.
They'd have like rock bands.
And wrestlers?
And wrestlers, like Mr. Fuji sticker in the barbecue chips.
They had the baseball ones also.
Yeah, like Eric Davis sticker.
Yeah, Eric Davis, Canseco.
Oh yeah, Daryl Strawberry.
Sure, of course, of course.
So there's a Toronto Mike sticker for each of you
and a temporary tattoo
courtesy of sticker you should put them on our neck those are great yeah kind of jailhouse look
where at the tmlx for i'm actually gonna have a contest for listeners uh very shortly they just
opened up the new store on queen street for sticker you but there's gonna be uh as it opens
in phases there's gonna be an exciting contest with giveaways and stuff.
Of $1,000?
Stay tuned.
Stay tuned, Stu.
Are you going to give away $1,000?
Stay tuned.
Okay.
And before we, well, let me see.
Let me get back to completely ignored before we get to these jams and we get a kick out.
But, okay, so I guess I'm just curious.
When I did my thing about Shakespeare and my butt.
Your defense.
Who's your co-host on this show?
Sammy Cohn, who's the drummer for The Watchmen.
The Watchmen, yes.
How dare you?
Love The Watchmen.
How dare you?
I love The Watchmen.
You're pretending like he doesn't know.
Sammy was a great, by the way, Stu, listen to the Sammy Cohn episode of Toronto Mike.
He's amazing.
He's amazing.
You met Sammy?
I met him, yeah.
I met him when I was on your show.
Well, Lowest of the Low came over here
to promote their new album, Agitpop,
but also that they were going to perform at TMLX3,
which is pretty damn cool.
That was cool.
Fucking cool.
And I did bring up,
I played clips of Sammy on Completely Ignored.
I remember.
And I'm not,
maybe you should tell us,
he felt that maybe, uh,
maybe they were hyped a little too much in Toronto.
Is that the gist?
Uh,
I,
I don't know if it was,
they were hyped.
I'm going to go into like PR mode here.
No,
lose that PR mode.
Spinster.
Yeah.
No,
I,
I think he was just,
I mean,
I think his point was as someone who grew up in Winnipeg and was living in
Winnipeg during the ascent of Lois Lowe,
they, he, I think
his point was they seemed like a very
Toronto thing.
I don't think he was saying they didn't
resonate with those audiences. I think it just
they seemed particularly
Torontonian. Did they wear
Leeds jerseys? Well, there wasn't
a lot of Toronto references in
their music. Carla Bridge and
The Only Cafe. cafe well lots of
kids you down on their street it's true yeah um you know even talk about talking talk about
taking streetcars downtown like not every city across canada is a streetcar so i mean but that's
kind of weird because like i listen to acts that are talking about like places i've never been
california strawberry fields etc yeah i i think it just because like even in Winnipeg
where like Toronto is the epicenter of Toronto
is like the New York Yankees when you live in Winnipeg
they're like fuck Toronto that's what they think
I think it's probably like known even in Winnipeg
at that time if you're following music like just how
massive this band was because this band like
transcended
CanCon like they were up there with like Nirvana
and like Pearl Jam and like we all were
listening to CFNY back in the day. It was
true for years. These songs were in heavy
rotation. That's a subject we wanted to talk about.
Remember last time we were talking about the
Canadian grunge scene and how we were so
enamored with it and what ended up happening
with a lot of the guys? That would be
another visit that we should just talk about.
Yeah, that's a completely different podcast.
We can kick out some of those jams.
I only did it for two episodes. I'm wondering, do you think I went too...
I only did it for two episodes.
I did it, I think I did it for Lowest to the Low,
and then I did it because a member of Pursuit of Happiness,
Brad Barker, came on.
That's right, yes.
I think I did it because Brad Barker had just played with The Watchmen,
but they had also just played with Lowest to the Low.
It just came up organically.
Did I lean too hard on these
uh controversial statements was i i just i just what is your opinion i don't want to hurt i guess
i think sammy's a sweetheart and a wonderful guest and a fantastic drummer for a great band
do you think he cares does he care i don't know you'd have to ask sammy that i never mentioned
it to you do them in well you know we had those late night no did he mention it to you was like
i mean ron hawkins like opened what the hell's up with Mike?
I mean, Ron Hawkins opened for the Watchmen last November,
and I know those bands are friendly, like most of these bands are.
All right.
Just want to make sure Sammy's not mad at me.
Yeah, there's like a fraternity between these bands.
I think so.
They go up and down the road together.
You know how it is.
Those car rides.
Yeah.
And van rides.
A lot of Kraft Dinner passed around.
Stu, with this new success from the doc that's on Netflix,
do you need any accountancy help?
Do you have a good accountant?
Always could use some good accounting help.
And, of course, Cam, you're printing money at Cam Gordon Enterprises.
You always need some good best practices advice from a good accountant.
Never hurts. I would recommend
Rupesh Kapadia. Write this down. Kapadia
LLP. Rupesh is
he sees beyond the numbers. I call
him the rock star accountant. He was at
TMLX3 as well. But he's
recorded a tip, if you
will. A common question people have
is should they invest their money
in RRSPs
or in TFSAs, tax-free savings?
Can we guess?
Can we guess what he's going to answer?
Wait, wait, spoiler.
Come on.
We'll hear him out
and then we'll hear
whether you're doing it right or wrong here.
Let's listen to Rupesh Kapadia.
Hey, hey, hey, Toronto Mike listeners.
This is Rupesh here from Kapadia LLP.
We at Kapadia LLP always look beyond
numbers in servicing our clients. One of the ways we do this is by ensuring that they pay the least
amount of tax in their lifetime. Today's topic, I get asked this question all the time, what is
better, RRSP or TFSA? As a general rule of thumb, I think of it this way.
If you are in your prime and are earning the maximum taxable income now,
then invest in RRSP.
This will give you a tax deduction at your current tax rates
and hence you will pay less taxes today.
However, if you think you will be making the most taxable income in the future,
then invest in a TFSA,
as your investment in TFSA will grow
on a tax-free basis. Well, everyone will have a different situation, and hence, it's always best
to consult your tax advisors if you're not sure. Till next time, be calm and save your taxes.
Bye for now. Be calm and save your taxes. And then contact Rupesh. Complimentary 50-minute consultation.
I mean, that right there, that's like 60 seconds of knowledge.
He's just dropping for free.
I feel like the other guy got a jingle when he was talking.
You should give the same service.
Complimentary.
Didn't you used to use Pink Floyd money?
Am I imagining that?
Or what was that?
Or that was for something else.
That was for Paytm.
I feel like something needs to be.
He deserves a jingle bed.
Or like Ted DiBiase.
You know those like Corey's clothiers?
Yep.
That's what reminded me of him.
Saul Corey, of course.
He's like, yeah, come on down.
It's Corey's.
We got a good suit going on.
That guy?
Of course I know Saul Corey.
Of course.
Come on down and see us.
We got a great sale on the down for it.
You got to have a good suit.
Apparently when Bobcat's going to start his own sports radio network,
and Corey will be the financier.
Saul Corman.
Yeah, that's the plan.
Okay, so let's do this.
Are you ready?
Can I start with one of Cam's jams?
Are we kicking the jams?
Are you guys ready to kick out the jams?
Let me get out my notes.
There's real notes.
That's an actual piece of dead tree there.
I'm excited.
You know the drill, right? I'm going to start playing
the song. We're going to kind of feel it for a bit
and then I'll bring it down. This is number five on his top five
countdown of ages. These are in no particular order.
Mine are in an order.
Yours I have in the right order, Mr. Stone.
You, Mr. Gordon, I have put them in the order that you sent them.
Perfect.
Okay, here we go.
Yeah, that's a good one.
I didn't even know this was Canadian.
How do you know?
Wow.
Yes. What did you think I would do?
Sit all alone by the telephone.
Wait for the day that you might come home.
Saving myself for you.
Wow.
Now did you really believe?
I'd never look at another guy.
I've not heard this song in like 30 years.
I love this song.
It's so good.
F-O-U
Wow.
All right, talk to me, Chuck.
Okay, so this is,
and for each one of my five picks,
I've got like three to four fun facts first.
So this was Area Fashion
out of Hamilton, Ontario.
Now, back in the day,
I thought it was Area Fashion.
Like, area starting with an A, fashion as in like...
Sure.
But it's actually someone's name.
Like, E-R-I-A Fashion is like F-H, almost like Alexa Yashin.
I don't think anybody knows who's singing this song.
I would never be able to pull it out.
But this was a big hit.
This was number 50 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1988.
Pretty big for Canadian artists.
And Area Fashion, on the heels of this,
went on to open for Candy in the Backbeat
on a cross-Canada tour,
which I think would be a great fit.
Under Aladdin Moon?
Yeah, so like, fantastic song,
but sort of a tragic artist
because Area Fashion actually died in 1996.
I was going to have her on the show.
Yeah.
Oh, no.
Jeez, that's not good.
Yeah, I know.
I know I'm going to take it down a notch.
Cancer, actually.
Wait a second.
Didn't he advertise these as fun facts?
Someone dying of cancer is not a fun fact.
No, that one's not fun, but actually,
Area of Fashion, the only other song she ever recorded.
This is not on an album?
This is just a one-off?
She had one album, but the only further recording
she ever released other than the album
that this song was from was a theme song
to a Kiefer Sutherland holly hunter movie called
woman wanted oh i don't know if you guys ever watched woman wanted but this song was in heavy
rotation on cftr back in the day like this i remember was like the number one when they had
the call in like the nine and nine or whatever it was top six or top six uh the stupid joke of the
day yeah mike cooper anyway, fantastic song.
And the other guy.
Russ Holden.
Russ Holden, of course.
And Dick Smythe.
This is a very...
Big hit.
Dude, I have a fact here.
Hold on.
You know, Evelyn Macko.
It's in here, actually.
It's right...
Okay.
We're not on Periscope, are we?
So that, I'm not even going to open it.
Oh, wow.
This is a courtesy of Evelyn Macko. Is that a t-shirt? She says it's like a cloth or something, but I'm afraid to, I'm not even going to open it, but this is a courtesy of Evelyn Macko.
She says it's like a cloth or something, but I'm afraid
to open it. I'm never going to open it.
Can you clean your glasses?
I would just leap
across this table and strangle you.
That's probably worth like 25 bucks or something.
I'll tell you what, that
song,
I was expecting Cam to take deep dives
and I was expecting them to be like way, like I was expecting cam to take deep dives yeah and i was expecting them to be like way like
i was expecting not to know any of his songs and so far i am pleasantly surprised he's batting a
thousand that is a hit song that i have not heard in 30 years and i'm really happy like it's like
songs that were popular that we just don't hear much anymore and that's a great example and like
what a great jam like what a feel- song. It's catchy as all hell.
I love it.
And I had no idea.
It was not only did I have no idea it was area fashion.
I had no idea it was a Canadian.
I didn't know it was Canadian either.
And I also thought it had sort of like a Pointer Sisters vibe.
Yeah, like a Kim Wilde.
Like someone was like, get me like a jump for my love.
Yeah.
But it does sound like Candy in the Backbeat. Like, I might have even guessed if you put a gun to my head, I might have guessed that was Candy.
Wow.
All right.
I don't know how we follow that up,
but we're going to try.
Singing this song for you.
Good song, man.
We're going to be humming
that one for a while.
All of us are.
Rest in peace.
Good start.
Yeah, I can't believe
we lost her, though.
Like, I was thinking in my mind,
like, where is she at?
I could get her on the show.
It'd be so amazing.
It's brutal.
And next thing I hear,
she's gone.
Fun fact.
She died in 96. She died of cancer at the young age of 34 years old that should have been
steppy strippy strippy branding just facts fascinating facts rapid facts like monica
you ready stew yes this is my number five
i know this is a pretty big deep dive for me.
Doug and the Slugs.
I don't have any fun facts.
He's also dead.
Is he?
This is a fun song.
This is a really fun record.
It's bouncy.
I feel like it's in a movie too.
It's like
some famous
80s movie.
No, but they are
our Huey Lewis
in the News.
They're Canada's
Huey Lewis in the News.
Are they?
All solid bar band.
Making it work.
Three big hits though.
What were the other ones?
Let's see if you can name them.
I can't.
Too Bad.
Too Bad for sure, yeah.
And that was the theme for the Norm show.
Okay.
There's a third big hit.
The Tom Cat Prowl.
Do you remember this song?
How does that go?
I can't sing a wind another song.
Okay, we'll save that.
So, Making It Work, of course, we're listening to right now.
Day by Day. Day by Day. Oh, that's a big song. Day by Day, I'll save that. So, Making It Work, of course, we're listening to right now. Day by Day.
Day by Day.
Oh, that's a big song.
Day by day, I'm getting stronger.
That's a bigger hit than this.
Day by day.
That's a bigger hit.
We should scratch this and put Day by Day in.
No, this is good, though.
Doug and the Slugs did Day by Day.
I didn't even know that was their song.
That was like a ladder career.
That was a smash hit.
Good video, too. Day by Day. I didn't know that was like a ladder career that was a mash a smash hit good good video too day by day i
didn't know that was them like the video was them getting fired by their record label i remember
thanks a little time
i mean it's kind of got like a joe walsh vibe to it also
it's almost like a ska song oh Oh, the Too Bad is almost a ska song.
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
They were all monster hits, all three of them,
so I can't pick the bigger one.
That was like a seamless transition.
That was a nice transition.
Good job.
You could work at a strip club if this doesn't work out.
Episode 501, buddies.
Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen.
Doug Bennett,
he's from the West Coast.
Died of cancer. I believe
we have a theme. God damn, everyone, fuck cancer.
Seriously.
Day by day.
Oh my God, this is a great one.
Isn't that Sammy
Cohen who hates Doug and the Slugs?
Well, yeah, he's not a fan.
They've come up a number of times on the Completely Ignored podcast,
and I just don't get it.
I like to fuck his shots a bit.
He's got like a Tom Petty, Canadian Tom Petty vibe.
Yeah.
Huey Lewis.
It could be used in a Cialis or Viagra commercial
My memory of this song
Is much better than the actual song
Okay so
Go back to your story
I changed songs on you
No no I like this.
I like this.
I love it.
This is just...
This just makes me proud.
Doug and the Slugs was always just like a funny name.
You know, like the Barenaked Ladies is just like a funny name.
And when you're a kid, like Doug and the Slugs,
it's better than Mike and the Mechanics.
You know, it's like Doug and the Slugs.
Living years.
Great song, by the way.
Mike Rutherford.
They had a couple others too, but yeah.
All I Need is a Miracle.
All I need is you.
Different lead singers, though.
Paul Carrick.
Different lead singers, right?
Weren't they some of the supporting players from Genesis?
No, Mike Rutherford's from Genesis.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
But he didn't sing on, like, I believe Miracle, for example,
is a different, like, his project, he'd get different people to sing lead.
That was Paul Carrick who was in Squeeze
and also had a solo career, most notably Don't Shed a Tear.
You remember that one?
How's that go?
Don't shed a tear for me.
My life won't end.
There was a period of time when Phil Collins had big hits solo
Mike Rutherford
had a hit solo
yeah
Genesis was on the charts
with their own stuff
Peter Gabriel
there was a period of time
where
all of them
all of them
and the band
and there's another guy
in Genesis
who had a hit
and I can't remember
his name or the song
but there was like
a hit from one other guy
in Genesis
anyway
I can't remember
but anyway
so Doug and the Slug
were also by the way
played quite a
bit on 680 CFTR.
Yeah, all of these
are going to be CFTR.
Yeah, I was going
to say like every
single song there
I'm sure is like
big hits.
This is an 80s
countdown.
Number five,
Doug and the Slugs
Day by Day.
This is a good
commuting song too.
It's kind of got a
Dire Straits vibe too.
But Making It
Work is a good
commuting song. Yeah. Maybe they're like a blue collar kind of got a Dire Straits vibe too. Making it work is a good comedian song.
Maybe they're like a blue collar
kind of like get yourself to work.
I don't hear the Huey Lewis comparison
on this song. To me it's like
Dire Straits, Tom Petty.
I don't hear too much Dire Straits
but okay.
Tom Petty is a bit of a blue collar
kind of rock guy.
Day by day. Oh here we of a rock guy. Okay. Day by day.
Oh, here we go.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
Sick bass.
Yeah.
Holy shit.
Big drums.
Wow.
Wow.
Holy shit. It's far from reality. Knowing it was so real Never could be replaced
It's far from reality
Fire in our eyes
The sky up in summer
It's got all the right chords to be a hit.
What's your fun facts?
This one's definitely a lot less somber
than the last two. So this is Boulevard
who I think
went mainly by BLVD
period for what it's worth
out of Calgary.
What's the name of this song?
It's called
Far From Over.
So this song went to number 26 in Cannes in 1988.
Similar to Area Fashion, who opened up for Candy in the Backbeat, Boulevard opened up a string of shows for Glass Tiger.
We'll be hearing from them soon.
Don't you worry.
So Boulevard had a very interesting time in the...
This is ridiculous.
In the 1990s, where they had a few members pass through,
perhaps most interestingly, a guy named Tom Christensen on bass
who went on to play with a conline crush
who sounded nothing like Boulevard.
Named after a Neil Young lyric, of course.
Really?
Okay.
That I did not know.
This is a...
You know, it's got all those pop chords that are needed for a hit song. Can I confess something really quick? Yeah. I don not know this is a you know it's got all those pop chords
that are needed
for a hit song
can I confess
something really quick
yeah
I don't remember
this song
yeah
really
it's very obscure
okay
like
did 680 really
did they play it
yeah
in Calgary
absolutely
I feel like
Sammy Cohen
I'm gonna tell you
I think it's a Calgary thing
this is a Toronto thing
like Toronto
didn't take to this
as well
but maybe
I don't even remember how much music or anything the video was they were playing on like a pier This is a Toronto thing. Toronto didn't take to this as well. But maybe.
I don't even remember how much music or anything. The video was they were playing on like a pier.
Like Chalk Circle.
You remember the video for April Fool?
Of course.
I play it once a year.
Yeah.
So they're like.
Are you thinking of the Luba video maybe?
Let it go.
That almost made my life.
It should have.
But interesting fact about Boulevard here.
Wait, I just want to know the interesting fact of how this song made it to your five.
Like, you just love this song?
Yeah, I was a big fan of this back in the day.
I started looking at, like, 80s bands.
No, I don't think so.
I don't think I started getting cassettes until, like, probably afterwards.
Really?
Yeah.
What about you, Stu?
Because I distinctly remember going out and buying the Stray Cats built for speed in 1983.
I had records.
I had tapes.
I had everything.
Yeah.
I was probably around this time, but no.
I would go to Sam the Record Man and just like.
Did you buy 45s?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, me too.
I had a 45 of You Look Marvelous by Billy Crystal.
Oh yeah.
Vanna
had something, a letter, the letter song
from the Box Tops guy.
Pick me a letter.
I don't care how much money I've got
to spend. Can't stand to stare
at Pat Sajak again.
I had a Fisher Price record player,
and the small records, the 45s,
they would actually fit on the record player nicely,
and I would scratch.
Oh.
So I was trying to scratch.
Wow.
Did you have ALF records?
No.
There was the Melmac.
I had Muppet records.
Melmac girls?
Like Sesame Street had a bunch of great records.
Oh, Sesame Street Fever was a big one in my house.
Oh, yeah. Big one. Actually, we had Grover on the cover and grover in his white suit yeah
those were good times and yeah that was like yeah disco duck was no disco duck was yeah that was a
mickey mouse one that was that was rick dees rick dees right right right let's go duck let's go duck
man okay you look marvelous he was he starred in uh a movie with Andre the Giant.
Yes, he did.
My Giant.
I was good.
Not My Giant.
No.
My Giant was the other guy.
Yeah, of course.
George Mears.
Can I get a peanut?
Anyone got a peanut?
Inconceivable.
Princess Bride.
Princess Bride.
Yeah, he was in Princess Bride.
So Boulevard, BLVD.
Yeah, Boulevard.
And still active.
Last show was actually in Sweden.
There you go.
No, it was like last year.
I think you may have had me in the first round,
but I think I got you on this one.
Well, I got three more, so let's see where we go.
I have a question about obscurity.
So far, Cam winning the obscurity contest.
Is that a point thing?
Obscurity?
No, that's just Cam. I'm about to play a jam by Stu that winning the obscurity. Is that a point thing? Obscurity? Because that's just Cam.
I'm about to play a jam by Stu.
That's not obscure at all.
At all.
Okay.
At all.
As long as it's not a deal.
So I'm going to play it then.
No, definitely not.
All right.
You ready?
Yeah. Extended intro.
Yes.
La Bat's Blue.
This brings me right back, buddy.
I thought this was the police for about four years. So did I. LaBatts Blue. This brings me right back, buddy. I mean, this is a smash.
I thought this was the police for about four years.
So did I. It's got a very police-y vibe.
Giant step for you, Swatchy.
Yeah, yeah. I hear it. I hear it.
Of course. It is totally like a police ripoff for that, but you know.
Can I touch you to see if you're real? rip off for that, but you know.
Oh, this is going to get crazy.
Shout out to Jeff Spindell at Boom FM.
Spinning the hits.
You should have him on your show.
It's like a boom or zoom. What is it? Zoom? Boom. Yeah. You should have him on your show. Yeah. He's like a boom, or zoom.
What is it, zoom?
Boom.
Yeah, boom.
Thornton Lane alumni.
Yeah.
That's a good song right here.
Yeah.
Paolas, by the name of the band, which is the best name of a band ever.
The Paolas. The Paolas.
The Paolas.
Definitely Canadian
because it's on my
O Canada box set.
I'll tell you what.
Paola, of course,
fun fact,
that's how this song
got on the radio
because back in the day,
Paola is how
the record business works
and probably still does.
It still does, I'm told.
You know, the same way
that, you know,
it works today,
but they actually
called their band
Payolas.
And I think it was like
the S was like
the dollar sign
to be extra provocative.
This song was a hit,
was it around the same time
as Owner of a Lonely Heart
was on the charts?
I remember the two
would be like
back to back.
This is like 82,
83 probably.
Early 80s.
They made, many years later, one of my buddies,
Louis Ferreira, Justin Lewis, he's an actor.
He used to be the voiceover guy for LaBat Blue.
And this was the song in all the commercials back then.
It was like, LaBat Blue, the way she looks at you.
Drink a fucking beer.
It was like that.
We drink Great Lakes around here.
Yeah, yeah.
Screw that.
Great Lakes Brewery.
Home of TMX-164.
TMLX-4.
That's what it is.
You better be there, Stu.
September 16th.
Featuring open mic.
September 19th.
Exactly.
Run in by Stu Stone.
Yes.
Oh, and what day does your movie hit Netflix Canada? I don't know.
November something.
Okay.
November.
I'll be here.
It's being promoted on September 19 when you jump on the mic.
Sure.
Sure.
That'll be the fourth time he promoted that damn movie.
I'm getting a lot of legs out of that.
Just like Paola's got a lot of legs out of this hit.
Sure.
Do they have another hit?
Yeah, cameras.
What's their other song?
You would know.
Well, like Paul Hyde.
Like Paul Hyde had an interesting.
So nerdy.
I love that you know it.
Well, remember Rock and.
Alan Cross, eat your heart out.
Yeah, like Rock and Hyde.
Yes.
Had more.
It's Dirty Water.
Yeah.
And also a song called I Will.
I don't know it.
I probably would know it if you sang it.
And then, Mike, we were just talking off.
Mike had a string of solo hits including America is Sexy.
Right.
You remember America is Sexy, right?
I don't know.
America is sexy.
She wears her hair.
I'll wear it.
Check me.
And then we were talking a little bit by DM last night.
Canada's version of the Travelling Wilburys with Paul Hyde, Tom Cochran,
and Toronto Mike alumni,
Murray McLaughlin.
Absolutely.
Married to Denise Donlan with the Let the Good Guys Win, the Canadian song.
This guy knows everything.
Cam is literally an insider.
That's because he listens to Toronto Mike.
Yeah, all these songs also almost made my countdown, too.
So it's all very top of mind.
I understand that I'm a little bit more mainstream than Cam, but are you at least impressed with
my first two offerings?
I mean, these are great songs.
Yeah, this is a really strong offering, Paolist.
I have a stranger.
Excellent.
Bringing me right back.
Like, I'm just a kid again here, man.
In 1980, Kevin.
And Hard Sun, right?
That was a hit at the same time.
Hard Sun was Canadian.
The one that Eddie Vedder covered for Out of the Wild.
Was that Indio
Indigo
Do you remember
Unrelated but Club Nouveau
Oh yeah
Lean on me
Lean on me
Yeah they covered
That was the first time
I heard Lean on me
Me too
It was Club Nouveau
And then I found out
It was a cover
No
You know what almost
Made my list
Hands Up
By Swain
It was in the commercials
For Club Med
Exactly
It was a big song
It was a good song
There was a novelty of that.
It was like, hands up, this is a stick up, give me all your money, money.
I feel like this was a Rivers Air Force thing.
Oh, yeah, around the same time as the Money, Money had its own version.
So at bar mitzvahs, during Money, Money, we would yell,
hey, boobies, 80, eat bagels and lux.
Oh, that's the clean version.
I think it was banned from our high school dances because we were saying something else.
I love that song, too, and found out it was a cover.
I was disappointed.
Yeah, yeah.
Tommy Shondell or Tommy and the Shondells.
Tommy James and the Shondells.
Tommy James and the Shondells.
Right, right.
Who also did I Think We're Alone Now, which was the Big Tiffany hit.
That's right.
Very underrated 60s band.
I thought the Beatles.
Oh, no, no.
No, that's I'm Standing There.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Children behave. How about this? George Harrison, that's why I'm standing there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Children behave.
How about this?
George Harrison, I got my mind set on you.
It's a cover.
It's a cover.
I know that.
How about girls?
Wait, wait, wait.
This could be another episode.
Sydney Lauper, Girls Just Want to Have Fun is a cover as well.
It's a cover, yes.
Yeah, yeah.
So I got my mind set on you.
I seriously did not know either of those.
George Harrison, I got my mind set on you.
You should, if you can, the original is incredible.
Really?
It's incredible.
It's like an old Tito Puente record or something.
It's like...
If I may, I went to the Sam the Record Man at Jane and Bloor
to buy a 45 single of Got My Mind Set On You by George Harrison.
I liked it so much.
I loved it too.
It was a great song.
At the time, I had no idea it was a cover.
And later, I was shocked.
Get this guy out of here.
But yeah, and Tiffany.
Cam's more of a Ringo guy.
More in area fashion.
He was kind of busy at the time.
He liked the, not the Beatles, he liked the Ruttles.
Oh yeah, the Ruttles.
Do you remember that?
Sure, yeah.
The Ruttles.
Remember Kidiodio they were like
kiss but like a kid's band called kiddio they played at the x i swear we had posters yes
yeah kiddio that's not like i am the computer man i was gonna bring up the computer man
i bring it up all the time and i play it all the time i am the computer man i can do anything that
guy taught break dancing classes and me and my sister went to his class.
That makes sense.
Yeah, he did.
I am the computer man.
Computer man is your friend.
Honestly, that was, it's called, yeah, called Kidio.
Kidio.
Was the name of the show on Global, right?
They were like Kiss.
Or Vid, Vid, Vid Kids.
Vid Kids is where Computer Man's from.
Yeah, here it is. I am the Computer Man.
Oh my god.
This is so sick. I was a massive
fan and I thought I was like a hallucinating.
I am the Computer Man.
Boop, boop, boop.
I can do anything you can.
I am
the Computer Man. And he's breakdancing in the video.
He's like
He's kind of doing the robot.
Computer Man he is your friend. And he's breakdancing in the video. He's kind of doing the robot.
Isn't he? Yeah.
He was on Bit Kids all the time.
He was ahead of his time.
It's like an interlude.
An interstitial.
I think we call it.
Like Hulk Hogan's rock and wrestling
when you'd have Andre the Giant.
It's too small.
So do you remember in school when your teacher would wear this,
I want to say it's like a dolphin hand puppet,
and then they push play on the tape or the record,
and then they're reading the book.
It would be like a squirrel.
Whatever it was, but the Computer Man song was on that record too.
Holy shit.
Are you serious?
Yeah. That you serious?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah. That's shocking to me.
I did not know that.
It's like a Henderson public school thing.
Are you ready?
Yes.
For another...
Whose song is it?
Cam Jam.
This is a Cam Jam?
Yeah.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Res-o-me.
This public enemy?
We're going to the beach, G.
We're going to the beach, Gene. We're going to the beach.
Is it not the radio edit?
It's the video edit.
Okay, I was going to say, I don't recognize the opening, but I know it's coming.
Oh, wow.
Holy shit.
That's good.
Props.
Wow.
Amazing.
I'm embarrassed to be here.
I haven't heard this song in 30-something years.
That's good.
It's trippy, man.
Arpeggiators I always thought this was a British band
Newfoundland or something?
No, from Montreal
Holy shit
Good for you, Cam.
It does sound East Coast, doesn't it?
Yeah.
It's like a pivot sea shanty.
Our pageators are insane
And we won't be back
Till the money's all gone
That's right
I wouldn't have even known
This was Canadian
It's very like
New Brunswick.
Yeah, Nova Scotia.
Cape Brennan.
Like you drink
braai
because you're listening to it.
It's like an old
barroom song
that they like
made into like
a new way of hitting.
This image of you
all day long
all day long
all day long
Okay, this is
My Dreams of You but what song's in my head right now?
What is that?
Sun City, that's where we're heading.
And I won't be back until the money's all gone.
The Partland Brothers.
Is that right?
Yeah.
Which I think was probably a one-hit wonder.
It sort of has like a Simple Minds kind of vibe to it too.
It's like vaguely atmospheric or like talk-talk, like one of those Talk Or actually a lot like that Hard Sun
What did you say that was? Indio?
I think it was Indio
Good for you Cam, this is a good song
I have not heard this song
It's a definite CFTR
This probably got played on
What was that guy
City TV had like a video show
John Masters John Majors.
John Majors.
Yeah, this was...
Brad Geffen.
Yeah, Brad Majors.
I used to watch that show.
Of course.
I don't think we've even said who this is yet.
No.
Which is The Box.
Oh, this is The Box.
The Box.
Well, this is a big hit they had.
This had to be their big hit.
Closer Together.
Closer Together.
I just sent that to you.
Yeah, I know.
I didn't know that was the same band.
And they had Ordinary People.
Ordinary People.
We are Ordinary People.
Oh, my God.
That's great.
I'm going to download some Bach songs on my Apple Music.
In my opinion, I think this holds up really well.
Is it just me?
Dude, this is really good.
Like, this is good stuff.
No, this is still a good song.
It's got, like, a hipster 2019 vibe with these arpeggiators.
Yeah.
Now, here's a couple of not fun facts, just facts about the box.
Also sang the original theme song,
and I was going to put this song on the list
for the Just for Laughs festival.
I didn't know that but
Remember that?
The Just for Laughs theme song?
Didn't this have success
in the States too?
I don't know if this song did.
That didn't feel like
a Canadian song when I heard it.
And when I think of the box
I don't think of
Is this part of the same song?
See I ripped it from a video so there's some
their video like have a lot of i want to download that song that's how impressed i am yeah i remember
that ordinary people uh very well i have apple music in the uss in the uss and there's a line
in there i always as a kid misheard that's called a mondegreen when you miss your lyrics i was saying
it's like a vano white i thought it was saying Vanna White.
Which would have made sense at the time.
Right. They're called The Box?
Because I was busy listening to
Vanna Pick Me a Letter.
Well, do you remember they had a song called Temptation, too?
I only know Closer Together.
Like Temptation was in Degrassi High
School's Out.
Temptation!
Blindness Obsession! Temptation! Blindness,
obsession, temptation!
They had also a French song called
La Faire de Mortaires.
They were sort of exotic.
I only knew
Meetsou when it came to French music.
Bye Bye Bon Cowboy.
I'm downloading Ordinary People.
This is topical. I played the C&E two years
ago opening for Pegli Rulo. I thought the CNE two years ago, opening for a peg,
Peggy Rulo.
Who's saying loving you in easy.
I'm a Mike Peggy.
Right.
Thanks.
You've been for Scott.
Yeah.
But they actually did a,
at the CNE,
they did a cover of the safety dance.
Oh,
wow.
Yeah.
Interesting.
Also Canadian,
by the way.
Also spoilers.
Lots of spoilers.
Also Canadian.
We can thank set list.fm for that one.
No, I need to step in and just head straight on something,
which is that I only have loaded up here your top five jams.
Right.
Because you're referencing a lot of songs that were like 6 to 10.
That were on my top 6 to 11.
Now, as you reference them, I am pulling them up in case we have time at the end.
It all depends.
But let us kick out something.
time at the end.
It all depends.
But let us kick out something that it's I
would I would promote
this as a future guest
on Toronto.
This is from my my
chart.
This is from the stew
stone number three
list.
By the way hell of a
last entry you had.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Oh nice.
Yeah this is a good
one.
Was also in Degrassi School, so...
You know what else was in Degrassi School, though?
What?
Swearing.
That's right.
They're like, hey, remember when Tessa fucked Joey?
Fucking.
Yeah, it's the F-bomb, for sure.
This song is awesome.
Good late summer jam, too.
So, my buddy Lowell, who has a movie.
By the way, this is Gowan, Moonlight Desires.
Great fucking song.
Weird video.
He's, like, in Egypt or something on, like, a pyramid.
That's right, yeah.
There's a movie called Wolf Cop.
And they score the whole movie with this and the score,
everything is this song.
Really?
They actually got Gowan
to be in Wolf Cop too.
Wow.
But the whole score
of the movie is this.
It's a werewolf song.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Come on, that's a good one.
I love this song.
He had also three big hits.
Criminal Minds and You're a Strange Animal.
You're a strange... But he also came back as Lawrence Gowan and had another hit.
A Time for Love.
How does that go?
It was like an acoustic.
There's a time for love.
But it was big.
He was called Lawrence Gowan.
People kind of forgot that he was Gowan.
All the lovers in the world.
I don't know.
I remember a hit on CFNY.
It was around the time.
You remember in Drain?
I don't think so.
I think you're thinking of CHFI.
No, no, no, no.
102.1, there was a Lawrence Gowan song that made it through the cracks.
What era are we talking here?
Like, 92, 91.
Not a 92.
We're going to have to look at the charts.
Look it up, look it up.
Maybe during that McLean-Hunter for sale, we're playing Madonna and Phil Collins part.
But that was like 89.
Yeah, 90, yeah.
Lawrence Gowan had a comeback in the 90s.
Not on CFNY.
Yeah, he did.
He would have been mixed 99.9.
No, I wasn't listening to that station. When you stop.
When you stop.
I listened to CFNY throughout the 90s.
It's a square
on the bingo card.
Text Alan Cross right now and ask him. He'll tell you.
He'll laugh when I ask if
1992 Edge 102
played Lawrence Gallant.
He'll never talk to you again.
No, he will.
First of all, Larry is now the lead singer of Styx.
Yes.
So suck it.
Yes, that is true.
You know, Alan Cross does take my calls.
If I were more together, I could call him on the Bluetooth.
I actually think that Alan Cross is one of my Canadian music...
First of all, let's just stop for the bridge.
It's the best.
It's amazing.
Now, I consider Alan Cross to be music royalty,
and I would not feel any shame in you asking him if Lawrence Gowan had a song on 102.1.
Do you mean 92 or do you mean 1990?
No, like he had a comeback during when Nirvana and everything.
No.
I'm sorry that they played on Tiffa. Yes. Absolutely not. Can you step in, Cam? He's lost his like when Nirvana and everyone went to. No. Yeah. Sorry that they played on.
Yes.
Absolutely not.
Can you step in, Cam?
He's lost his marbles.
I'm telling you.
Ask Larry Gowen when you have him on the show.
No.
Don't make me Google this.
No, I know it's legal, but are you high right now?
No.
I wish I was.
You think 1992 102.1 is playing.
Smells like teen spirit.
And then.
Yeah.
The new.
I didn't say.
Lawrence Gowen. I didn't say. Everybody hurts. I didn't say. And then the new Lawrence Gowan. I didn't say that.
I didn't say that.
And then everybody hurts.
And the little Lawrence Gowan.
And Beastie Boys.
Hold on.
I didn't say that it was a heavy rotation.
I just remember hearing it on there.
And I also know that he was like rebranded as Lawrence Gowan so that maybe we wouldn't
realize it was Gowan.
That is true.
It's true.
But that was for M.
The same way Alanis Morissette was on 102.1 after being Alanis.
Same shit.
Different, but M-O-R.
You know what M-O-R means?
That's the format that Lawrence Gowan came back.
Sort of like how Corey Hart did the same thing.
It's for your mom and it's for your parents.
No, adult contemporary you're talking about.
No, but can you call up the song All the Lovers in the World?
Do you have time for a bonus cut?
Yes.
Do you know when Everlast
put down the mic
and picked up an acoustic guitar
and started doing Everlast?
That's the Lawrence Gowing thing too.
No, it's not.
Same shit.
Oh, dude.
It's not even close.
I can't do this.
I know.
I'm going to shut this fucking thing
down right now.
Are you serious?
Listeners have my back.
Wow.
Lawrence Gowing,
underappreciated,
underrated.
What a talent.
Okay.
Lead singer of Styx.
Suck it.
No, there's no comparison.
That Everlast comeback, the Whitey Ford Sings the Blues.
That was huge.
It was excellent.
Pull up that Lawrence Gowan song.
It was excellent.
He even had a song with Carlos Santana.
He had a song.
Do you remember this?
I'm not saying that Lawrence Gowan's thing was as successful necessarily as Everlast.
It's for different audiences.
It was similar.
It was the way that Everlast rebranded and people
who didn't realize
he was the House of Pain guy
because he was now doing
this blues.
That's what happened
with Lawrence Gowan.
He was not getting
any airplay unless it was
in the middle of the night
ironically maybe.
Does Chris Shepard
throw it on as a joke?
No.
Play the song.
Please.
I beg you.
Lawrence Gowan,
whatever the hell
the song is.
What's it called?
All the Lovers in the World.
I don't have it
in my collection.
I have to go to YouTube for this.
Let's do that.
All the lovers in the world.
If that's the song that I'm thinking,
then I'll tell you.
Lawrence Gowen.
Also, A Time for Love.
Which one am I buying?
That was the follow-up.
All the lovers in the world.
Let's hear this.
So 1992, which I'm telling you
because I was in high school in 1992.
So was I.
And I was listening to... So was I, I woke up to Humble and Fred.
Ever heard of them?
Sure.
Okay.
On 102.1, and my station was 102 for the rest of the day
unless I went to, I guess it was 1430 at the time.
They hadn't switched yet.
To hear Blue Jays baseball.
That's the only time I left.
Let's listen to this.
I hope this is good. I hope that this is the hit that I remember it to be
I'm struggling with my
I hope that it's the hit that I remember it to be
And God bless Lawrence Gowan
Moonlight Desires
By the way it's from 1990
So this might work in your favor
This isn't the song
Yes it is
No this is not it
It's not the song Do you remember the name of your song Gawen, not born in Canada. How about this? I'll play a cam jam. Also, I hate to be that guy, but... You can't help but to be that guy.
Sorry, Gowan, not born in Canada.
Oh, well.
That's fucked up.
He should be disqualified.
We're going to accept him as an honorary Canadian.
Just like we accept Keith Hampton.
And also like Paul Hyde, also not born in Canada.
Oh, man.
I'll let it go.
I need you to be that guy.
Okay.
While Stu does some searching here.
I don't know.
What's the other song that Cam said it was?
Wait, let me just play.
Here, we can always come back to it.
All the lovers in the world.
Here's another Cam Jam.
For the third time.
It's already great.
Mike, do you remember this one?
I do remember this band with another song.
Yeah.
From hip-hop.
Herbie Hancock style.
Wow.
Led Zeppelin.
Yeah, a little immigrant song.
They're paying a fortune.
Well, they're paying a fortune.
You know this one?
No, this is not Platinum Blonde. No. point of view i want you to why do we tell each other lies
i thought you knew it when i said that i would call last night i couldn't find myself a phone
now come to think about it can you tell me the holiday wrap
right how do i like we are going on a summer holiday?
Yeah.
Woo!
I mean, it's hot, but it's...
I don't remember this.
No?
Yeah, I don't quite remember this either.
But I dig it.
Yeah, like, this was on their...
I don't know if it was a massive...
Tequila?
Yeah, they're just copying everything.
There's nothing original here,
but it's really ahead of its time in that sense.
No, I was surprised this was an 80s song.
It sounds like it could be on the Ninja Turtle soundtrack or something.
If I may, in the late 70s,
I learned about a song that was very popular
that took a bunch of Beatles songs and some other songs.
Stars on 45.
Fuck, loved Stars on 45.
That's really the beginning of the DJ thing.
Yeah, Stars on 45.
You got it, buddy.
Yeah, I know my Stars on 45.
There's Jive Bunny.
Jive Bunny and the Master Mixers.
Love Jive Bunny.
Come on, everybody.
Come on, everybody.
Yeah, swing the mood.
I think it was right around the same time as this.
Yeah, this is...
You should have gone with a Platinum Blonde song.
Get in the dark!
Platinum Blonde was great.
Name the artist we're listening to.
So this is Con Can.
Oh, of course.
Are you big your part in this?
It's ironic that they're called Con Can.
I know.
That's why I thought
they'd be a hit
or a fit for this
it's like the payolas
yeah
like an inside joke
kind of nickname
sure
con can
I remember con can
they had a big hit though
this is not it
yeah I beg your pardon
is a big one
I beg your pardon
how does that go
wait what's this
hold on
out of its time Hold on.
Out of its time.
No, of its time, I'd say.
Everyone was rapping in the late 80s, even Fred Flintstone.
Yeah, I don't quite recall this one, but I missed out.
Nancy.
Well, do you remember, they also had a song called Harry Houdini.
I want to be like Harry Houdini.
That was a big hit.
Yeah, high five you on that one.
That was a big one.
And be the one who makes the biggest game.
They weren't like cartoon characters, were they? No, like the fan...
What was it you were saying?
Doug and the Slugs is like the Huey Loathes.
Yeah.
I think these guys were like Canada's Pet Shop Boys.
No, no, no.
Don't insult the Pet Shop Boys.
No, you don't think so?
No.
Okay.
I love that jam with Dusty Springfield
that the Pet Shop Boys had.
So do you know who did that rap?
Who did that rap?
Okay.
Do you recognize?
No.
Is it Canadian?
Well, it can't be because... I don't think so. rap? Okay. Do you recognize? No. Is it Canadian? It can't be because back then.
I don't think so.
No, okay.
It was Bronx style Bob.
I don't remember that rapper.
Who had an album called Grandma's Gone.
No, Grandma's Ghost.
Oh, that's so sad.
Remember who he is?
BSB.
But yeah, Con Can.
I liked that.
I want to be like Harry Hootie.
Yeah, yeah.
I remember that.
Yeah, they had like the one album that had like three or four hits.
They also did a collaboration with John James.
Is this the era where like we were all singing boom, boom, boom.
Let's go back to my room so we can do it all night and you can make me feel right.
That didn't fly on Cam's radar.
No, that was a bit.
That was a good jam.
Come, baby, come, baby, baby, come.
Bounce!
Stu, this jam I'm about to play from you...
Is this a Lawrence Gowen song?
No, but do you want me to...
If you could ever name the song, I'd play it.
I think we gotta let that go.
No, no, I can't.
I can't.
What did you say it was called?
All the Lovers in the World?
Was that the other one? one okay for the last time
memory loss
all the lovers in the world
okay let me just play it
on my phone
or no
or time for love
didn't we just play that one
yeah that's not it
that's not it
time for love you said
time for love
time for love
it was a delicate ballad
that's not it man
that's not fucking it this sounds like Robert when there's time for love when there's not it man That's not fucking it
When there's time for love
When there's time for love
When there's time for love
Okay let's see
The Good Catches Up is an album that he released in 1995
The Good Catches Up or I'll Be There In A Minute
The Good Catch Up
What?
Let's see
No that ain't it
No that ain't it.
No, that ain't it.
I'll find it.
I'll find it.
It's important stuff.
It is.
Sorry.
Can you put in Harry Houdini?
I want to be like Harry Houdini.
When There's Time for Love.
Did you already play that one?
Yeah, that's the one that we've been.
No, that's ain't... Yeah.
That one smells like teen spirit,
and here's the next song by Lawrence Gowan.
Yeah, this is not it.
This is not it.
Okay, well...
But this is good.
Is it?
This is not it, but this is good.
Good production on this.
Yeah.
It's like a troubadour.
It's like a troubadour.
Doesn't even sound like him. It's like a troubadour. When your wheels finally touch the ground.
Doesn't even sound like him.
Look me up, I'll be around.
When there's time for love, I want to be there.
When you've got all night for love
What year did that come out, Mike?
You said that's 1990?
Oh.
It's from You Can Call Me Larry.
I'll find the song
with the singing.
Oh, this is here? Okay.
Thank you.
This is like a good Ken Con song.
Con Ken.
I wanna feel like Harry Hootie.
This one has more of a Pet Shop Boys vibe.
Yes.
Absolutely.
I'd argue this is perhaps a Pet Shop Boys rip off
remember the song like I wanna be rich
you know that one
Holloway
Holloway
Stu if I can promote your next jam You know that one? Holloway, maybe? Holloway, yeah.
Stu, if I can promote your next jam,
it is very key to the Toronto Mike universe.
Is it?
Yeah.
And I don't know if you knew that.
I didn't. I can't tell if you picked it organically.
All organic, always, baby.
Just making me happy.
No.
Okay.
So we'll say goodbye to Harry Houdini, if that's okay.
Yeah.
An elegant fade down.
Good song, by the way.
So people don't get pissed at me.
Absolutely.
No, great song.
Now, here we go.
Oh.
Of course.
Yes.
This is like Smash
And like
A big departure
From the songs
He was famous for
This is like
An 80s smash
Yes
They went out to
Write a hit
And they succeeded
Dude
This was the formula
Back in that era
We talked about this
On a previous venture
But like the A&Rs
Had no imagination In the 80s,
and they just scrambled in.
Find me anything that worked in the 70s and bring it in here.
Tina Turner, let's go.
Bruce Springsteen, come on.
Right?
And this is the Canadian version of that.
Even Aretha Franklin had hits in the 80s.
Steve Winwood.
Oh, yeah.
But this is an example of that happening.
Aerosmith for Grind Out Loud.
The guy from CCR.
You know, John Fogarty.
Centerfield.
Yeah.
This is a hit in the States too, right?
Yep.
Had to be like it.
But no, it wasn't as big as I remember from my chat with Gino Vanelli.
Hold on.
Something was fucked up with record companies and stuff.
And this was not as big a hit in the States as it was here.
Was this one of the songs Gino Vanelli would just break into song?
Like while you're interviewing?
Yeah.
Like he would just.
Yeah.
This one and the.
Such a good song.
Just an emotion.
Wild Horses was a big one he'd break into.
That's a great fucking song, too.
Wild horses could not drag.
That's him?
Yeah.
Shut up.
That's a smash.
I now learned something, though.
I love that song.
You know what this means?
What?
Stu has not listened to the Geno Vanillia episode.
No, I need to hear that.
Clearly not.
That's fucked up, man.
That's like the go-to episode.
It's pretty wild.
Wild horses could not drag me away from you. That's fucked up man That's like the Go to episode It's pretty wild That's a smash
Good for Gino
Just a motion away
Just a motion away
Was a big hit too here
Just a motion away
This has like a
David Bowie 80s vibe too
To it also
Like very similar to like
You know the guy from
Le Chic.
Who's the bassist?
Nile Rodgers.
It sounds like a Nile Rodgers production.
Good call.
He did the Big Spoons album.
Nile Rodgers did? Did he really?
I didn't know that. I know he's responsible for
all the... Am I wrong?
He did Duran Duran. But he did the Spoons too.
He did the Reflex. He did the Spoons too.
And he did like NXS and stuff. But he did the spoons too, right? He did the reflex. He did the spoons too. And he did like
NXS and stuff. No, he did the spoons.
Some spoons. I don't know
about that. He didn't do like romantic
traffic. I asked Gord Depp about
it. Wow.
But like when you listen
to Let's Dance, David Bowie,
the production on that song is
like, holy shit. It's like
so good good you know
i saw you had some gino so i pulled a little clip and since stew has not heard the gino van
ellie this is just like five seconds maybe my favorite five seconds of the entire uh
kicking out the jams number two gino van ellie black cars look better the shade i want to know
if you at the time uh, regarded black cars as any
sort of, I joke, don't call it a comeback.
Can we get off black cars?
There was only half an hour more on black
cars before. We can move on to another
cut from the same album here.
I got more black cars questions.
Good for you.
You know what? You're breaking my heart,
Gino. Can we get off black cars?
I'm going to wake up in the middle of the night tonight in a cold sweat.
Did Gino really say that?
You remind me of my parish priest.
Get off of it, I said.
That's a good line, by the way.
Like the cackling handler in the background.
His brother.
Wait, so he doesn't like black cars?
You have to understand.
He's given me an hour, and I decided to spend 55 minutes talking about black cars because I loved it like yourself.
It's a huge hit.
I loved it.
Makes me happy just listening to it.
Gino's got to own that.
Gino was great, though.
That's like when I met Sharon and Bram.
And I brought up Skin and Meringue, which was on my list, which we'll talk about.
Sure, yeah.
They don't want to talk about Skin and Meringue.
They want to talk about Candyman Salty Dog.
It's like Radiohead and Creep.
It's the same thing.
Cam, you ready for your final jam?
Yeah. Thank you. It makes you feel so free You're better, you're better
Than the rest of your fucking skin
Right now
When the sun keeps on fading
And it heals to reach your face
You can do questioning I can't do the have no idea.
What is this?
You stumped the expert.
It's like ahead of its time, whatever it is.
Well, it depends.
Like, you know, it's post-Sex Pistols. I'm not sure it's ahead of its time this one's like
1982 or 1983 like it's so this is the nils who are a band i'm not sure i'll confess i had no
idea who this band was in the 80s i probably didn't hear them till at least the late 90s but
i don't know i i kind of want to throw in something super obscure.
Well, you succeeded.
For this.
Yeah.
Twice.
You had two songs that we had no idea.
So I'm going to bring this around a little bit.
Please do.
To area fashion.
Always.
So this band was led by two brothers, Alex and Carlos Soria.
Kind of had like a very typical story for like kind of a punk indie band,
like kind of record label issues and drug habits and whatnot.
And,
and sort of muddled through the nineties.
They were kind of a contemporary of like the early dough boys.
I swear to God,
when I heard this,
I was talking about that last time.
I was thinking of the,
that this,
the production reminded me of like a dough boys.
Yeah.
So like,
kind of like, but like even before the Doughboys, but yeah, kind of like muddled
through the 90s, had a lot of kind of personal issues and some drug issues.
And we're kind of getting back together in the early 2000s.
And then, well, yeah, like tragically, Alex Soria ventured out onto some train tracks
in Montreal right before Christmas in 2004.
Oh, no.
And yeah, it's no longer with us.
No, no, no.
Train tracks?
That's a punk rock way to go, though.
Yeah, but that song is just like, I could listen to a million.
I just love that song so much.
Scratches and Needles is the name of the song, by the way.
Just like a
classic, CanCon.
I wouldn't even say forgotten because I don't think most people
have ever heard that.
Just like a tragic story
but a great song and a great band.
It's all on Spotify.
Who did I'm Tired of Waking Up Tired?
That was the diodes.
Diodes, yes.
Love that jam. Yeah, fun track. I'm just sad about the diodes. Diodes, yes. Love that jam.
Fun track.
I'm just sad about the whole situation.
Several of Cam's picks I didn't hear of
and several of them had tragic deaths.
You're the guy who picked the Doug and the Slugs track.
Gino's still with us.
I just saw him.
He's still going strong.
He's not himself today.
We got to check for a fever here.
We talked about that. Before you play my song, Yeah, we talked. He's not himself today. We got to check for a fever here.
Come on.
We talked about that.
He died.
Before you play my song, can you just call out my honorable mentions?
Can we do like- Do you remember them?
Because you can call them out.
Yeah, go ahead.
So we had, well, number 11 was just honorary.
Skin a-marinky dinky.
This was one of my honorable mentions.
Yeah, this is one of your honorable mentions.
Glass Tiger, who, you know, you can't have a Canadian countdown without Glass Tiger.
Although he's not born here either.
He's from Scotland.
Is that true?
Yeah.
He's still got the accent.
Alain Fru.
Who's good friends with Dominic Cohen.
Wait, I just thought that he was just like from Montreal,
like Alain Fru.
No, man.
You ever heard him talk?
He's like, and he's a big fan of like Scottish football.
Football and stuff, yeah.
Oh, what a prick. He's got a team and everything.
He has a team?
Not ownership, but he roots for some
Scottish football team. I don't know these
teams. But yeah, he's got a thick
brogue. He's got a brogue.
Remember they did that song with Rod Stewart?
Of course. Sing my song.
Oh, no.
It was My Town.
The other songs I had, by the way,
I had Tom Sawyer, Rush.
Of course.
Very obscure.
Heaven by Bryan Adams.
Another obscure.
I mean, that's why they're not in the top five.
By the way, I have teenagers.
I can tell you Heaven by Bryan Adams was recently remade for the new generation.
Oh, good.
Is that like a dance version?
Kind of a dance-y version, yeah.
Safety Dance, Men Without Hats.
Yeah?
Nice.
And Never Surrender, Corey Hart. Love Corey. version yes safety dance men without hats yeah nice uh and uh uh never surrender cory heart
love cory uh and then of course this one don't uh forget it don't forget me when i'm gone glass
tiger gone i saw alan fru perform this live uh like not too far from here at a free concert in
the park oh good not too long ago you know it almost made my list? Haywire, Dance Desire. Oh, yeah. I remember that. Dance Desire.
I like that song.
Dance Desire.
I like that song.
It's a good track.
So I mentioned that last jam from Stu Stone was like part of the Toronto Mic'd Universe,
and so is this next jam.
Can I just say the opening lines and see if Cam knows?
Of course Cam will know.
Go ahead.
This is a throwdown, a showdown.
Hell no, I can't slow down.
It's gonna go
Wait quiet
I wanna hear
Cam or Chuck if I may
Sure
Do you know what song that is?
Yes
Yes I do
Does that deserve to be
My number one
Can-Con 80s song
Coming from me?
Sure
Why not?
You know I could've been
This is a throwdown
A showdown
Hell no I can't slow down
It's gonna go
First offense.
All the mix.
Go on and break.
Okay.
Party people in the house.
May retention please.
So say in a moment.
Why is there a tweet?
Will be played in many parts.
That's LTD.
On the wheels of steel.
This ain't a game.
I'm on a mission.
One, two, three.
This is so dope. Still so sick. I was going to say, say like this really holds up oh yeah it's got
that break it's like eric b that's uh timeless that Canadian version of an eric b and rakim song
it's just so awesome and it like held up to all the American counterparts at the time.
As far as what rap songs were at that time, this was better.
Agreed.
30 years old, too, now.
By the way, listen to the Farley Flex episode, as well as the Maestro episodes.
This ain't a game, I'm on a mission.
Call me a hip-hop tic-tac-ticianician Was Maestro, was he at the Beer Fest or like Public Enemy?
So I feel like he played last time when Public Enemy was in Toronto
He played with Public Enemy back in the day
They used to put him on
Yeah, but last time I saw Public Enemy, which was at the Sound Academy like six or seven years ago
Maestro came on and did a freestyle.
And Mishimi did one as well.
Maestro was rapping about Rob Ford, as I recall.
This song.
I venture to guess that he made some actual money off this song.
How so?
How so?
Just because everybody bought it.
But just in Canada.
So what?
I'm just saying,
even the number in Canada
would have been impressive.
There's more people in California
than there is in Canada.
I understand that.
My point is, though,
I still venture to say
he sold at least a couple hundred thousand units,
if not more.
Like, this was a hugely successful song,
even by the standards of just Canada.
Just let it slide, y'all.
I don't give a damn. Get back, don't quiver, man, oh, man. even by the standards of just Canada. Damn!
But then when,
if you didn't know
like Kool Moe D.
I go to work.
I'm just saying.
I go to work
like a doctor.
When I would hear
Kool Moe D.
I would think,
is that Maestro?
Not really.
I don't think so.
He was like
How You Like me now too
Oh sorry
How you like me now
Yeah you're thinking
Of Big Daddy Kane
Big Daddy Kane
Sorry I'm sorry
Not cool mode
My bad
My very bad
Big Daddy Kane
Cause they're both smooth
Yeah
Smooth and every guy
I would say that Maestro
Maestro is the Big Daddy Kane
Of the Canadian rap scene
And that's a compliment
Big Daddy Kane's a legend
But not cool mode
Not cool mode
No
I'm like Backpack Backpack Give me some slack Jack Quick Jack compliment. Your daddy Kane's a legend. But not cool Modi. Not cool Modi.
I'm like a backpack.
Give me some
slack, Jack.
Quick, Jack.
Sick.
And he drops
a needle.
Sure.
Conducting things.
Conducting things,
OAO.
These guys.
Even a ballad
in private symphony.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
That's like a sexy
song.
Yeah.
The surface
very light. Yes. When everyone needed a ballad in private symphony. Yeah. It was like a sexy song. The surface very light.
Yes.
When everyone needed a ballad, even rappers.
Dude, this is a fucking smash.
It's like, if this song doesn't happen,
Snow probably doesn't happen.
I thought you were going to say Drake.
Or Drake, for that matter.
I mean, I was just trying to go in order.
There's no Kish without this.
There's no Dream Warriors.
The Rascals.
There's no Cardi.
Nothing.
This is the OG, the guy that broke the mold and did it.
Like, this doesn't sound corny.
Can you guess?
And if you listen to Toronto Mike's, you know the answer, but which American singer introduced Maestro to his label and got him his U.S. record deal?
Is this not Chuck D?
No, not Chuck D. And they met at Electric Circus.
Is this Heavy D?
No, good guess.
To the fresh side, Electric Circus. Was it Heavy D? No, good guess. To the Fresh Side, Electric Circus.
Corey Feldman.
No, Young MC.
That's a good guess because Maestro opened for Young MC on his Canadian tour.
That's a good guess.
And he did the remix for Louie Louie.
The Louie Louie remix.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Oh, shit.
I remember that one.
For the Cadillac movie.
What was it called?
Fort Berling.
No.
It was a good movie, too,
that the brothers had to get the Cadillac
across the country to their dad,
who was dying,
who I think was Alan Arkin.
Redman?
Something Cadillac or Cadillac something.
Cadillac Man?
Cadillac Man, maybe.
Cadillac Man.
Louis Louis was like a common thread.
It was like incidental music.
Remember 2 Live Crew did like Dua Diddy?
Of course.
That's right.
Of course.
So the answer to my trivia question is Stevie B.
Oh.
Stevie B.
Stevie B, the postman.
And Maestro was not the first Canadian rapper to get a U.S. record deal.
Anybody want to guess who the first Canadian rapper to get a U.S. record deal?
It's Mishy Mee. I wouldn't have known that. I guess who the first Canadian rapper to get a US record deal is?
It's Mishy Mee.
I wouldn't have known that.
I know that from listening to the podcast.
Because Cam's paying attention.
How is it you never listen
to the Geno Vanelli episode?
I don't know.
I'm an idiot.
And I will listen to it.
But now that I know he hates black cars,
I might not want to listen.
He doesn't hate black cars.
He sang it,
but he was sick of my pestering questions.
So more about black cars. That's like you asking he was sick of my pestering questions. So more about black cars.
That's like you asking me about Jack of all trades at this point.
I'm fascinated by your success.
You're going to have to cut a big fat check to Mr. Mike Wilner.
More than just hooking him up with a lady friend.
Did you and Kinseiko talk?
Let it.
Yeah, Ozzy.
Was it by design that he opened this song with Let Your Backbone Slide?
Had to be.
Yes, of course.
Just like I'm the same guy.
Right.
Just to let you know.
Let's get into it.
Hey, guys.
Remember?
Here's my other song.
By the way.
Also a great song, by the way.
The director of these videos, both those videos, Let Your Backbone Slide, and this one as well,
is a guy named Joel Goldberg
who's been on the show
a couple times
Joel Goldberg
is probably going to be
at TMLX4
I could introduce you
to the director
of Let Your Backbone Slide
video
I'm guessing he's Jewish
as well
yes he is
and he went by Jay Gold
when he had that
CFMT music video
speaking of Samantha Taylor
it all comes back to
and we talked about
Toronto Rocks already with J already with JD Roberts and,
um,
John major rocks.
Great video.
Samantha Taylor.
That's your girlfriend.
No,
no,
sorry.
That's the wrong.
What was the theme?
What was the theme song from Toronto rocks?
Toronto rocks.
Toronto rocks.
It's kind of like cams.
That song that cam played.
That was not the Nils.
So Jen, so we kicked out the was not the Nils. So, gents.
We kicked out the jam.
We did it.
So, do I declare the winner?
I mean, I don't know if there's...
No, there's no winner.
I think the listeners are the winner.
I think we're all winners.
Yes.
Participation trophies.
I want to say that Cam did not let me down in the sense that he pulled out five songs that I have either never heard before
or that I haven't heard in 30 years.
And the ones that I heard
for the first time in 30 years,
is this the Lawrence Gowen song?
No, but this is a jam you'd hear on 102.1 in 1992.
This they actually played.
I think he did a really good job
with his songs and his fun facts.
And I just,
you know,
I,
I,
I think that we,
you know,
we may,
this may be the start of something beautiful.
Maybe we'll come back and this might be a thing.
I would love it.
You guys just love chatting with you guys and the songs.
It's just a good,
tremendous pop culture,
Toronto centric.
And I think we all learned something about ourselves too.
Yeah,
we did.
So I feel like I'm the type of guy that remembers.
That was a little cool, Jay.
I'm that type of guy.
I'm the type of guy who remembers the cushions on the couch
and Cam remembers to dig in and get the change from underneath the cushions.
So we complement each other quite well.
Well said.
Congrats on the success of your documentary on Netflix.
Can't wait for it to come to Canada.
Neither can I. November. I urge wait for it to come to Canada. Either can I, November.
I urge people to listen to
Completely Ignored. It is a
wonderful podcast from both
Cam Gordon and
Watchmen drummer Sammy Cohen.
He does a great job on that too. I'm
honored I was a guest on that show.
Season six coming this fall as well.
The man does seasons.
I guess this is a little bit late in the episode to divulge,
but we never really got into the backstory,
but Cam and I grew up together.
We went to high school.
I just assume anyone who's listening to this episode
has heard that story from Cam.
Cam and I grew up together,
so this is really exciting for me
that you were able to even provide this platform
for him and I to even get together.
Absolutely.
I've seen him twice this year,
and both times were at your Absolutely. I've seen him twice this year and both times
were at your events.
Your event and then here.
I'm honored.
And I love hanging out with him
and I wish we could do it more
and hopefully we'll be able
to find some time.
Absolutely.
What's your next documentary
going to be about?
I can't tell you
but I am starting to shoot it
in September.
September 3rd I start shooting it.
I'll just say it's more
of like a true crime
type of vibe.
So it's not reuniting
Jim Taddy and Mark Hebbs
on Sportsline. It should be. But it's not reuniting Jim Taddy and Mark Hebzer on Sportsline.
It should be.
But it's not.
Okay, quick insight.
For episode 500, I wanted to reunite Jim Taddy and Hebsey.
And Hebsey was a shoo-in because he lives here.
But for Jim Taddy, he was on vacation.
We were DMing back and forth.
I gave him my best pitch, like what I wanted to do.
And he said I politely declined.
So I think we have a documentary waiting to happen.
Why do they hate each other so much?
What the hell did Hebsey do?
I don't know any of that.
What did Taddy do?
Was Jim Ralph involved?
Love Jim Ralph.
But you know, you're pulling at these threads.
There's a documentary here.
There's got to be something there.
So whatever you have planned, fuck it, do this.
It's because Hebsey was cool, and he had had the earring and he had the Hebsey Awards.
Yeah, yeah.
And, you know, probably he was the celebrity.
He had the cat.
Well, I guess, no, he didn't have the cat.
Taddy was Yes Guy.
Yes Guy.
Yes Guy.
He's got it trademarked, apparently.
We're not even supposed to say it without paying him.
Really?
Okay.
FYI.
Yes Guy.
And that brings us to the end of our 401st show.
500.
Mike, what did I say?
Four.
I'm slipping, man.
My 501st show.
Good catch, Stu.
People would be so confused.
You can follow me on Twitter.
I'm at Toronto Mike.
So, Stu, who are you on Twitter?
I am Stu Stone.
S-T-U-S-T-O-N-E.

Instagram.
We only talk about Twitter on this show, right, Cam?
Yeah, how dare you.
What are you on Twitter, Cam?
Cam underscore Gordon.
Even the guy
in charge of Twitter in Canada can't get Cam Gordon.
He's got too many handles.
I guess the real challenge this week is how are you going to
frame us all in the picture?
I'm 4 feet tall, Cam's 7 feet tall.
We'll figure it out. I'm very creative.
Who else we got? We got
Great Lakes Brewery. They're at Great Lakes
Beer. Propertyinthesix.com
is at Raptors Devotee.
Palmapasta is at Palmapasta. Stickercom is at Raptors devotee. Palma pasta is at Palma pasta sticker.
You with that sticker.
You Capadilla LLP is at Capadilla LLP.
See you all next week.
Shout out to Lawrence Gowan.
But I like it much better going down on you.
Yeah.
You know,
that's true because everything is coming up
Rosy and green
Yeah, the wind is cold
But the smell of snow
Warms us today
And your smile is fine
And it's just like mine
And it won't go away
Because everything is rosy now
