Starting point is 00:02:06 Joining me today for this 11th episode of Toast are Cam Gordon and Stu Stone. Hello. Woo! Welcome back, guys. Who is this brother? Like, which brother is this? I know there's about like four or five brothers. It might be brother... Brother Neil, I think.
Starting point is 00:02:15 It could be Brother Neil. Brother Neil. Just the brother. Brother Bill, what time is it? So we should tell people we're actually finally having toast for breakfast. This is our first... Like, this is about 11 0 8 a.m eastern time might be a little early for brother bill i don't know what his schedule
Starting point is 00:02:29 is like but thank you guys for joining me this morning of course yeah no this this one was tricky scheduling we went back and forth on this one i think it's stew's fault stu tell us your schedule uh because you did warn us that you will not be in person for December or January's toast. Maybe. I hope not more than that. But, yeah, I've been working, man. I'm a working man. I'm a working stiff. Like Rush says.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Yes. Working man. Okay, I have so many questions for both of you. My goodness gracious. First quick question is, are you guys watching the World Cup? Didn't it just start? Yeah, well, I mean, are you planning to? I'm planning on it, sure.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Did you watch any yesterday or earlier today? I saw some of the highlights. Yeah. Has Canada played? I should know this. Wednesday. Yeah, not Wednesday. I'll check it out for sure.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I hope that Canada pulls off some sort of upset. But, you know, I think we're in this place where, due to the exposure we've had to the team, we think that they're like world beaters and they're going to be so great. We want our group. Because all we've seen is them win. But apparently when you speak to people
Starting point is 00:03:29 who actually know football, they say Canada stinks and they don't have a chance. So I'm confused. Maybe I'm just like name three players. Okay, I can do that. I can do that. Alphonso Davies, David, there's a bunch. Jonathan David.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Jonathan David, right. There's a bunch. There's a bunch. I can name them all. Also a Bell and Sebastian song, Jonathan David. Wow. Here's what I learned. I'll do this in a nutshell. That's Craig David. We are the underdog versus Belgium. We are the underdog versus Croatia.
Starting point is 00:03:57 But apparently we could draw Morocco. Who knows? We could upset and get a victory there. The magnificent Morocco. Okay, so unlike Qatar where you cannot have beer when you watch the World Cup matches, you can have beer on Toronto Mic'd. So, gentlemen, I know it's early,
Starting point is 00:04:13 but it is after 11 a.m. There are cold Great Lakes for you if you're thirsty. I had several drinks this weekend, Saturday night, and you were there, Mike. So, I think I'm good. There you go. Okay, that's a cue. We're going to start this, and you were there. Mike's. I think I'm good. There you go. Okay, that's a cue. We're going to start this, and then I got Stu questions.
Starting point is 00:04:33 You know, this song was in the film The Boys Club. Bet you didn't know that. And that starred Chris Penn. Yes. See, that's how much I know about you, Stu. I have read your IMDb page more times than I want to admit. Is Rusty listed on there? I should check.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Bruce LaBruce directed the video for this. That's right, yeah. Which is a fun fact. Okay, let's talk, Cam, about our time together on Saturday. Firstly, let me ask Stu, did you know that this was happening, that this surprise Rusty show was taking place Saturday night? I didn't. I thought they were going to play with
Starting point is 00:05:06 the Lemonheads, but I heard that they got snowed out. Oh, I have a question about snow later, so hold on to that one. Sure. And I guess they were with the demand for Rusty, they went and played upstairs at the poutine shop. And I heard it was
Starting point is 00:05:22 a great time. Nachos, I think. I heard it was a great time. It was a great time. Cam, I got to tell you, I fucking loved it. I can't believe I pick up a ticket for 15 bucks. I met so many great FOTMs there. Great value, yeah. You know, Beef Eckley was there.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Shout out to Lee. I met the people from Acid Test that were there. It's a good space up there. I wish they had more shows up there. I prefer upstairs the CQDs to the Horseshoe Tavern. Just the shape of the room. I think in similar vibe because they're both like sticky floors. Totally.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Checkerboard floors. How long was the set? Only like they had a curfew, right? An hour. Yeah, because there was by 10 they had to shut down. There was like a hip-hop night right after. There's a big lineup when we left. A younger crowd was waiting to come in when I left and that older crowd there. uh what other fotms were there uh shout out to uncle rob but you were there cam yeah the acid test yeah lucy and steve from acid test but the guys
Starting point is 00:06:14 from rusty i had a good chat with the three guys who visited the basement here and i will say they still sound amazing i yelled the whole time and i just had the best fucking time, Cam. Yeah, yeah. And it's, I think one hour of Rusty is kind of perfect because their songs are fairly short, except for this one, Misogyny, I feel like, it's like five minutes, but. They opened up with Misogyny. Yeah, all the jams, a few tracks from their 2019 album they put out that sounded great.
Starting point is 00:06:40 And Cam, I'm glad you're a witness to this. Can you tell us, Stu, what happened during Empty Cell? empty cell all right yeah a big toronto mike shout out wow wow did mike tweeted about this because anytime his name is ever mentioned by anybody this there needs a receipts on this well i don't have the i don't have yet any uh video of this so if anybody was at the show and took video of empty cell i want to see it like I want to hear it. There was someone with a video camera and you accosted them like minutes after the show. Can I get a copy of that? I said hi.
Starting point is 00:07:12 If you have any video of Empty Cell, because I saw her take a video, I said this is my email address. I would love it if you could share it with me. And she said okay. And she had me type it into her phone. But I have not heard from her since. Excellent. Your Google alerts will go off as soon as they post the video, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:07:27 I would say, though, Mike, that sounds like a really great show. I wish I had made it. I was busy getting older. Right. Is that Saturday? It was Thursday, but I wasn't in town. Happy birthday, Stu Stone.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Thanks, man. I saw you posted pictures of you and Aunt Sandy. I saw her, yeah. It was good. pictures of you and Aunt Sandy. I saw her. Yeah, it was good. It was great to see her. She's not in great shape these days, but it's great to see her. And she's still with us. The legend.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Yes. Since we were all together. It seems like it's a low energy start to the show. I think it's because it's 11 in the morning. Yeah, we need to really wake this up. I'm waiting for Cam to crack a beer. Yeah, well, we all have coffee. You know what? I'm going to finish my coffee, and then I have a burst right here.
Starting point is 00:08:08 But I know you like Hayes Mama, Cam. Or is it MF who likes Hayes Mama? We're both fans. So there's an octopus, a Hayes Mama, and a Canuck Pale Ale. I might pass on today. Well, it's too early for you. I have some more concerts coming up. You could drink at 7 a.m. in this city during the World Cup.
Starting point is 00:08:24 That is true. Where do you get the Yeti with your name on it? Oh, Barb Paluskiewicz. She's back? There you go. No, we still like each other. Okay. And she sent one over.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Those things aren't cheap, you know. That's like 50 bucks. I'm going to put it on Kijiji later. I'm sure that would actually sell because Mike is not a common name. Totally. Maybe there's another Mike out there that wants his name on a cup. Okay. Because we have, I should tell people, we're going to try to do this in two hours because we have other things.
Starting point is 00:08:54 People have things to do. But I need to get to the Vandits premiere. I got to talk about Vandits. Sure. But before we get to Vandits, I would like to play a clip from an episode of Toronto Mike that recorded that recorded about a week ago this start uh mary jo eustace and dean mcdermott doing the rounds doing the round yes that's right the tmds uh they're actually on the feminine warrior next week well actually i think it's just uh dean but this is what dean had to say stew listen closely this is about you buddy i know stew from his rap days when he went by Stu the Jew.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Now, does Stu have a big cock or just Tony? I never saw Stu's. Stu did date a porn star. What? Kendra Jade. What are you guys doing to my life? I did see Stu's dick. And?
Starting point is 00:09:39 Stu, she was very jealous and possessive of Stu. Who? Kendra Jade? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Keep going. We need this info.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And then we'll get to you. So when he'd go out of town, she would get very jealous, but she'd miss him. So he made one of those casts of his appendage. Appendage. Okay. Yeah. Like Jimi Hendrix had and all that stuff. Stu's a little guy, and yeah, you know, Stu, he's good.
Starting point is 00:10:09 Aw, okay, good. Yeah, Stu, there's nothing, you know, I wouldn't, you know. Write home about it? No, I was going to say I wouldn't throw him out of bed eating crackers, but, you know, it's good. Okay, good. Yay, Stu. Yay, yay, yay.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Yay, Stu and the HM. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm so happy for both of them. And thank you for not saying anything about, you know, me. Yay, Stu. Yay, yay, yay. Yay, Stu and the HR. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm so happy for both of them. And thank you for not saying anything about, you know, me. You? Yeah, being hung like a light switch. Thanks, Mary Jo. Stu, please address this. This aired, this was on Toronto Mike.
Starting point is 00:10:37 People have been talking about how a porn star had like a caster of your erect penis because she would miss you. Please just set the record straight. What's going on here? I can't comment on that. I don't understand. Why don't we move on? I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:10:50 It's in the morning. What is Dean doing? Did he invent that? I don't know what's going on with that story. I have no comment on that. Can I actually bring the nose around to back to the lemon heads? Yeah, of course. I don't know if you remember.
Starting point is 00:11:04 So recently we lost Cynthia Plastercaster, right? Right. And she would do this. And I think when Wise Blot was on, you played the song by Kiss. Right. Plastercaster. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Now, do you remember a Kiss tribute album in the 90s called Kiss My Ass? Vaguely, yes. The late single was like the Mighty Mighty Bostos doing Detroit Rock City. But who covered Plastercaster on that album? DJ Lethal. No, the Lemonheads did.
Starting point is 00:11:32 The song Plastercaster. Okay, well done, Cam. I like it when you tie a bow and all that. I'm trying to just class this up. I don't want to talk about this either. I just found it interesting that Dean on a very public podcast talked about a porn star having a cast of Stu's penis. Like, how could I not bring that up? I mean, who doesn't have a cast?
Starting point is 00:11:47 They sell it at like XXX fun time stores. It was a deal. I had a contract to sell toys and whatnot. Never went anywhere. We'll move on from Stu's penis. We've done Rusty, Stu's penis. Jesus. Earlier you mentioned snow.
Starting point is 00:12:07 A little of this and then I have a question about a great night that we all enjoyed together. Stu, I was at your Bandits premiere. It was a full house and it was a blast and your movie is great. Thank you very much. I was shocked that Cam was at a comedy movie as well. That was exciting. Did you laugh, Cam? It was a big week for me that week. But yeah, I Cam? It was a big week for me.
Starting point is 00:12:46 That week. I laughed. It was good seeing all the... Also, a bunch of our high school pals were there. DJ Farbsy and Jason Morrow. I should have recorded live from the lobby. I was taken aback by the paparazzi and the red carpet. That was wild, man.
Starting point is 00:13:02 They treated it like Tom Hanks was in this thing. I don't know, like Tom Hanks was in this. Actually, wait, can I give a nice, I don't think I told you this. So I'm sitting with Mike and who, Moose Grumpy. Moose Grumpy
Starting point is 00:13:12 and Ian Service. Yeah, and we're sitting right next to Rodness' parents. Yeah, I'm right beside Rodness' mom. Oh my goodness. So like we lean over and I just talked to Adam Whitener.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Oh, great. In the lobby. So we're like, oh, we're Adam's parents. So I said, oh, I used to work with Adam at High Road. He, great. In the lobby. So we're like, oh, we're Adam's parents. So I said, oh, I used to work with Adam at High Road. He's great.
Starting point is 00:13:28 He's awesome. We used to work on, you know, like LG Electronics. Oh, things I would completely ignore. I didn't realize it was Rodness' parents.
Starting point is 00:13:36 I thought it was Whitener's parents. Oh, that's so funny. I was like, oh yeah, there's two Adams. Did they know? They were very polite. They were like,
Starting point is 00:13:42 who the fuck is this guy? Okay, so many questions. People want to know some specifics like if they missed the premiere when can they see it on Hollywood Suites
Starting point is 00:13:50 yeah they can see it on Hollywood Suite on starting on demand on December 1st and I think it's going to air I think December 15th I want to say but you can watch it
Starting point is 00:14:00 at your own free will starting December 1st on Hollywood Suite it's a free preview that month as well. So if you don't have Hollywood Suite, you can sign up. If you don't know how to find it on your local cable provider, it's available through Amazon as well. And it's only available in Canada. So that's very exciting that we're trying to make some noise here.
Starting point is 00:14:20 And we've been making a lot of noise here. And the movie has been getting a lot of great feedback. And I'm really excited about it it i was really taken aback it was a mind-blowing 24 hours for me to come in because i was on the road for cam to just traveling to come to make it to that screening was a whole process because i was there was a fog if you remember in toronto that day flights were getting canceled i was trying to catch a flight from Tampa. I got in about two hours before the show started and rushed over to the theater.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I was blown away by not only the attendance, which was a capacity crowd, but the applause and the laughter. It was like a whole scene with the red carpet and the step and repeat. I felt like, oh, I've got to get away from this, where the happening is. It was really like a whole scene with the red carpet and the step and repeat. I felt like, oh, I should like, I've got to get away from this, like where the happening is. Like it was really like.
Starting point is 00:15:08 It was chaotic. But listen, that's exciting. And I think it's because, you know, you don't see too many Canadian films get attention. So it's exciting that when it happens and when there's a movie that's kind of fun and that's not some like real serious melodrama that's sort of a fun movie that speak you know you can just order a popcorn and watch people get behind it and they got behind it especially in winnipeg it got extended an extra week in the theaters by cineplex in winnipeg wow and i'm excited about it
Starting point is 00:15:41 you guys were on like CP24. I watched. I think with Rob Wells. CP24, the whole gamut. Was it George Lagaganas? Who was talking to you? I think so. He didn't ask me about it. Electric Circus, yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:59 The cast of The Penis didn't come up. But I'm happy that I came here so that that would come up. You know, as rumors go, that's not a bad one at all. That's not a bad rumor. Like a porno star wants your penis. I'm okay with the rumor, but I just can't believe that Dean even would say that out loud. And I'll tell you in a minute because it ties back to Vandits. It's all about Vandits, of course.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Yes. But since you were last here, Stu, for Toast in October, I've had two stars of Vandits sitting here in the basement studio. And the reason penises came up was because Tony Napoo came over just like the day before the premiere, I think. Yeah. He was awesome, but he kept talking about, you know, whipping his dick out at hockey games and stuff. And then, then of course, Dean McDermott was talking about how he's hung like a fucking moose. Shout out to Moose Grumpy.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Tony is? Yeah. And then somehow it tied into your penis. Now, being hung like a moose, is that good? Like, do moose have notoriously big... Moose Grumpy, we need to know. Big cocks, I heard.
Starting point is 00:16:52 But anyway, so that's... Tony Napa was amazing, so shout out to Tony Napa. But then just last week, Jesse Camacho sitting here in the TMDS studio. That's great. Both are great people. I love them both.
Starting point is 00:17:04 And Camacho is an amazing talent, and I'm so excited that he got to come here. DS studio. That's great. Both are great people. I love them both. And, uh, Camacho is, is an amazing talent and I'm so excited that he got to come here. And Tony, of course is a polarizing guy and I'm happy that he didn't whip out his junk here. He's great. Did you guys like Vendits though? Like,
Starting point is 00:17:18 are you just saying that because I'm here? I thought it was funny, clever, and it included a hell of a, I won't call it a cameo because it was a bigger role than that, but. Oh boy. Like just a little to warm us up here, but when the great Jan Arden is dropping F-bombs. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Absolutely. She's a very funny woman. And I told you guys that all this was happening and a lot of people, you know. I believed you. Yeah, she was working blue in the movie, but she was really great. So I have a question about the movie. Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:50 How were you able to afford... Oh, because this song's in the movie. Insensitive. Well, of course, Jan being in the movie helped. But I asked her. I said, hey, how can we use the song Insensitive? And she put us in touch with Universal and we had to cut a little check. But it wasn't too big of one because they did us a huge solid because Jan's in the movie and she was very supportive.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Great scene, by the way. Yeah, and it's funny because that scene used to be a lot longer and more graphic. But I toned it down a lot after she gave us permission to use the song. And she's such a good sport. She came in. She didn't know us from Jack. She trusted us.
Starting point is 00:18:34 The movie came out great, in my opinion. She came out great. The song is hilariously placed in the movie. Great use of the song. Right, Cam? Totally. Loved it. Very high concept movie, too. Yeah. It's more than one place. You've got to have great use of the song, right Cam? Totally. Loved it. Very high concept movie too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's more than meets the eye.
Starting point is 00:18:49 You gotta have an IQ of at least a certain level. Shockingly, that's my fifth movie that I've directed, which is insane to say out loud, but I think that this one, I mean they keep getting better and better, I hope. So are the budgets getting bigger? Well that was our biggest budget project yet, but you couldn't really see it
Starting point is 00:19:06 because I had no fucking gear to make the movie. You wouldn't know. You wouldn't know, right? See, that's the problem. Well done. Okay, so I know you talked about the fog. You were almost late getting to this thing because of the fucking fog.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Yes. I want to know about the fucking snow because me and Ian Service are leaving together, okay? Oh, did you guys hook up? I can't tell tales like that out of school here. But we're leaving. We see Darren O'Brien, better known as Snow, the man behind Informer, which I played about 10 minutes ago.
Starting point is 00:19:37 And Ian's like, Mike, we should go say hi. And I have a moment of like, leave Snow alone. He's here at Bandits. He's by himself there. Rare for you to have. Well, no, I actually don't approach in the wild like that. I like to, they come over, then we're friends. Now I can't approach them.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Oh my God. Who do I approach in the wild? Oh my God. Everyone at that Rusty show. Like 10 people. But they've all people I met before. Okay. They've all people who've been down here.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Well, let's make sure we talk about Fresh Phil too. Oh my God. Yeah yeah And he's another guy Who loved his experience here And we know each other Because he came over So it's not like I'm Snow doesn't know me From Adam Rodness
Starting point is 00:20:13 Okay Right So here's Adam Rodness' parents Yeah who were Lovely I need to know Stu Stone
Starting point is 00:20:19 Why was Snow At the Bandits premiere Well at one point We were actually considering Using some of Snow's music, but it just didn't work out.
Starting point is 00:20:27 But Francesco Antonio, who you should have on the show sometime, who played Vini in the movie Bandits, the sort of, you know, the leader of the
Starting point is 00:20:36 impromptu leader of the Bandits. He's hilarious. The Jersey Boys guy? Yes. And not Jersey Boys, Jersey Shore.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Jersey Boys would be like, you know, Frankie Valli or whatever. But he not Jersey Boys, Jersey Shore. Jersey Boys would be like... Okay, well... Frankie Valli or whatever. But he works with Snow, I guess. Well, I know he works with Snow on some other musical ventures. So I think that Snow's interest in coming was to see his buddy Francesco. That's what I was looking for. Because Jesse didn't know.
Starting point is 00:21:00 I was wondering. No, I think that's why. And I was pretty surprised that Snow was there too. But he was really cool. He liked the movie a lot. And he brought his dog to the movie. I don't know if you noticed that. I noticed that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:10 And his dog was like, sat through the whole movie. And I said to him after, I said, hey. I said, so you brought your dog to the movie? He's like, yeah. And he didn't even bark once, so he loved it. And I was like, can I use that on the poster? Like, Snow's dog. Dog approved.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Liked the movie. But he's a really cool guy. And I've had a lot of almost encounters with him. And so now I actually got a chance to see him. And he was really nice. And he has a huge entourage that rolls with him, which is good for us because they bought a lot of tickets. Filled up the theater. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:43 So we got our Bandits update. Can't wait until this is on Hollywood Suites. Yeah, you guys should check it out. I saw David Kynes there too. He's the man. He's a good man. We love that guy. What a fun crowd.
Starting point is 00:21:52 I want to name check. Tim Heron, I want to name check. Like Tyler, I'm sorry, VP of Sales was there with his wife. It's the first time I ever met his wife. I mean, just the people. And did they all like it? YYZ Gord. Yeah, everybody that I talked to.
Starting point is 00:22:03 I used to work with their publicists, too. It was great. Just what a crowd. You know who was there? Dale Cadeau, who lives in British Columbia. I'm not saying he flew for the band. Shout out to Dale. But he was there.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Nevertheless. These people love you, Stu. So shout out to all these great FOTs. Out of all of the tickets that were filled at that show, only four of them were comped. And that was Toronto Mike and his three contest winners. Every other ticket was a paid ticket. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:31 So that was Cam, by the way. You were one of them, I believe. But Ian Service and Moose Grumpy. That's wild. I love that. That's a great fact. And now I want to thank Darren O'Brien. No, Darren Shanahan.
Starting point is 00:22:42 It's all these Irish Darrens. Darren Shanahan, we know him better as Quebec Irish Boy. He could not make this premiere because he lives in Quebec, but he wanted to support you. So he bought two tickets that I got to FOTM who wanted to see you. I've got some news for him.
Starting point is 00:22:58 So Mark Carey took one. So for Darren, my boy Darren, Vanitz got into the Montreal Film Festival, which is taking place in January. Wow. So there's a good chance that the movie will be playing on the big screen in Montreal in January. Wow. Well done. So,
Starting point is 00:23:13 there you go. So congrats to you, Stu. Great movie. Thank you. We're about to get to the jams. By the way, the topic today was Cam's idea, and I think it's a good one, but he wanted to kick out the jams. The jams. And I've got to be careful
Starting point is 00:23:27 because my six-year-old likes to say dee jams and then I'm like dee jams. Okay. Which means it's a two-word title. Two-word titles, first word the.
Starting point is 00:23:36 That's how easy this is. So we're all going to kick out our favorite two-word titles with the first word the but I need to ask you Cam because it's been all about Stu and all these great updates. Anything new in your life? No. Okay. But I need to ask you, Cam, because it's been all about stew and all these great updates. Anything new in your life?
Starting point is 00:23:46 No. Okay. I'm ready to move on, but I want to thank... Thank you, though. Later today, I am heading to Palma's Kitchen. Well, there is something new in Cam's life.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Tay Oscar Hernandez got traded from the Blue Jays. What are your thoughts on that? I'm okay with it. You need to see what happens next. Yeah, exactly. If this is part of... Didn't he seem like a really fun-loving guy? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Hit for power. Like my daughter's favorite player, for example. I feel like the writing was on the wall for him in September when it seemed like he wasn't really legging out a couple of plays there in September. I think that's what I think happened. I'm not kidding. I think he was just collateral damage
Starting point is 00:24:26 because they want to get some left-handed hitters. He's a free agent. But he's so good. It sucks. Again, seems like an awesome guy too. I don't know. I think a good mature influence, even though he's like 30.
Starting point is 00:24:38 It's just such a young team and everyone seems to love that guy. So good luck in Seattle. I'm glad he's going to a good team too. Now, I'm going to make a site visit at Palma's Kitchen later today. I want to see the room. We are hosting...
Starting point is 00:24:51 You haven't been there before? There's a new room. No, of course I've been there. Where's the new room? TMLX 5 upstairs. There's a new room where TMLX 11 is going to take place. Does Wilner know? I'll have to make sure everyone knows.
Starting point is 00:25:02 So Great Lakes is supplying the beer. That's happening. Fresh craft beer. Thank you, Great Lakes beer. Palma Pasta obviously is feeding everybody, and they're hosting us. This is December 3rd at noon. It's going to be a blast. I got some tricks up my sleeve.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Remind me. I know, Stu, you're out of town, right? Yeah, I'm doing Dark Side of the Ring, so I'm going to be not available. So I'm sorry, but maybe I'll record a video message. Sure. Send me some audio. And Cam, you're a game time decision? Yeah. My daughter's with me that weekend. She's going to be hungry. She doesn't like
Starting point is 00:25:34 pasta. She wants to hang out in the subdivision in the... Oh, shout out to Rush. It is very tasty. She does like lasagna. That's two Rush jams today. So shout out to James Edgar and of course Rush Mike, who will both be at TMLX 11. With McDonald's coupons.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Otherwise he's not invited. But he's one of the three gentlemen who are 10 for 10. So he has to be at TMLX 11. No more Big Macs though. It's coffee.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Depends how close you are to him. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Big Macs. Somebody saw the picture of Dean McDermott When I was promoting
Starting point is 00:26:06 His appearance on Toronto Mic And they said he looked Like Mark McGuire I was gonna say He looked like Kevin Nash Kind of Like he's pretty Like bulky
Starting point is 00:26:12 Yeah He's had his moments Yeah he looks good He's a funny dude Dean I'm gonna have to Have a talk with him Have a chat with him
Starting point is 00:26:19 He's gonna stop talking About your penis In public at least Save that for off the record times We were live. Okay. It was a short segment. By the way,
Starting point is 00:26:29 knowing him the way that he thinks, you know, the way that he, you know, he does know me. So he probably just thought it was totally fine to say something like that. Yeah. And again,
Starting point is 00:26:37 as rumors go, it's not a bad rumor. A rumor that you have a huge penis, that a porn star took a caster of your erect penis to remember you by when you're not around is actually the very best. I would think you planted that rumor yourself. So they did an interview with Dana Levinson too. So it was on the DL, that's back. Was that like the first episode of the new season?
Starting point is 00:26:54 Or what's the status there? Speaking of plasters. Sad news in that we spoke to a guest in May, May 2022, who was battling cancer. And sadly, she passed away. And not that that's the reason Dana took a hiatus, but she had traveling to do in the summer and she was in Vancouver filming.
Starting point is 00:27:16 I thought she was in like Italy or something. She was in Italy. She was in England. Like this woman's been everywhere. So On The DL is back now and it came back with Mary Jo Eustace and Dean McDermott. We have another one dropping this next week. One of the DL's back now and it came back with Mary Jo Eustace and Dean McDermott. We have another one dropping this next week. One of the good ones.
Starting point is 00:27:27 She's a big fan of yours. I like her too. She's cool. And we saw her recently at an event but I can't remember what that event was about. Okay. So we're going to kick out these jams but I want to thank a few more partners really quickly. StickerU.com has been amazing. If you need stickers, Stu, for bandits, you know where to go, man. StickerU.com.
Starting point is 00:27:44 That's where you go. Yes. I noticed how weed-friendly the whole bandits. Not that there's a lot of weed in the movie, but the posters and everything show cannabis. This is a very, as Jesse reminded me, it's a great movie to get high and watch when you're high. Well, you can watch it sober, too. I never said you had to be high. But it is a great movie to watch high.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Speaking of that, I want to give a shout out to uh uh humble howard i understand that you uh let uh he's got some things going on and i hope that he's gonna be okay yeah he hasn't put that in public yet because he wants well i'm not didn't know what it was i'm just saying i hope he will talk about it yeah uh absolutely uh and he loves you too and you were on his show recently with adam rodness but humble howard at 7 30 a.m on his show humble and Adam Rodness but Humble Howard at 7.30am on his show Humble and Fred will talk about what happened but he's doing fine I talked to him from
Starting point is 00:28:31 Mexico and he's in Mexico Okay good so he's fine He's alive. Great. He'll talk about it more tomorrow but yeah he went through something and that's why we did a Best of today instead of a live show but more on that on Humble and Fred tomorrow. Canna Cabana is where you go. They won't be undersold on cannabis or cannabis accessories.
Starting point is 00:28:48 We love Canna Cabana. Oh, tomorrow night, Tuesday night, Colt Cabana is going to be in Toronto. Why is Black telling me about this? Oh, I saw the poster. Like Megan Boyce. Yes, I'll be there. Who's he fighting?
Starting point is 00:29:02 Chris Masters. The masterpiece. Okay, and what's his gimmick? He puts you in the master lock. Like Billy Jack Haynes? Love it. Rikishi will be there. Okay, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:13 And John Morrison will be there. John Morrison. Yeah, maybe after your time. Okay, Rikishi I know with the dancing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow, wow. That's fun. That's tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Okay, maybe you guys will see Sammy Cohn there, man. Sammy drumming up results, of course. He's a drummer for The Watchmen, but also he's there to answer all your real estate-related questions. And you can find him at... He's fighting Jeremy Taggart, fellow of the drummers.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Jeremy Taggart is actually on Humble and Fred Show Wednesday. By the way, did you see his tweet? He threw some shade at Our Lady Peace. Oh no, it's a bad breakup. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he says Rain doesn't focus on the drummer. Like he doesn't care about focusing on the drummer. But they had a bad breakup over there.
Starting point is 00:29:53 But Sammy Cohn, not broken up with the Watchmen. They're still going. Shout out to Danny Graves who played TMLXX. But Sammy is available for you now with any real estate questions or drumming questions. Sammy.Cohn, that's K-O-H-N. I think Cam might have worked with him at some point, but I can't remember that either. I did.
Starting point is 00:30:10 ProperlyHomes.ca. Write Sammy today. And last but not least, a couple of great podcasts I want to tell you about. Al Grego is one of those guys who's 10 for 10 at TMLX events. He's a great guy. He will be at Palma's Kitchen on December 3rd for TMLX 11. He's also here on Thursday. We're going to talk, and I can't wait to get him back on the show.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Love it. He hosts a great podcast called Yes, We Are Open, and it's a Moneris podcast production, and he tells the stories of Canadian small businesses and their perseverance in the face of overwhelming adversity. Everyone can subscribe now at YesWeareopenpodcast.com. We love Al Grego on this show. Yeah, big fan.
Starting point is 00:30:50 Big fan. Chris Cooksey is another good FOTM who listens to every program on this podcast channel. And he hosts The Advantaged Investor and that's from Raymond James, Canada. And if you want to remain knowledgeable, informed, and focused on long-term success,
Starting point is 00:31:06 you want the Advantage Investor, subscribe today wherever you get your podcasts. Last but not least, before I kick out the first jam, which is a Cam Gordon jam, The Jams. I'm so excited to do this. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Brad Jones himself has a great podcast called Life's Undertaking and you can hear me on that show I get to co-host it's great fun what do you guys talk about oh it's everything like we'll talk about life we'll talk about death we'll talk about the ceremony of it all we'll talk about his week it's just like a really like thoughtful interesting you know dive with Brad Jones from Ridley Funeral Home Cam Gordon yes any words to say about your first VJ? Yeah, I actually have a good anecdote for this.
Starting point is 00:31:48 So Stu Stone went to school with a guy named David Silver. Oh, that ties into Tori's spelling. Yeah, so it also ties in. Obviously, Stu did a scene with David Silver on 90210. That's true. The David Silver we went to school with. Sweatpants. Wore sweatpants every day
Starting point is 00:32:05 through OAC. Was also a pretty by-the-book guy. He was a member of the Youth PC Party. Really? Wow. This is true. In 1993, he asked if I would like to volunteer at an event at the Western Harbor
Starting point is 00:32:19 Castle for then-Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Kim Campbell, who replaced Brian Mulroney. Yeah, so I'm like, okay, I'll go do it, even though, you know, in years since, I wouldn't really be a card-carrying member. Can I just say a quick Kim Campbell thing? Absolutely. I know your story's going to be great.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Absolutely. I was in L.A., and I was not around for some of this Kim Campbell stuff. It was short. Yeah, so one of my friends went to UCLA, and he said, oh, the Canadian prime minister, a former Canadian prime minister came in and spoke at our school today. I said, oh, who? He says, Kim Campbell. I said, who's that?
Starting point is 00:32:55 He goes, she was a Canadian prime minister. I'm like, no, she wasn't. He's like, oh, bet you. Like, what, she lied? I'm like, she had to have been lying. Wouldn't I know? I was like, she's never been elected to prime minister. I would have known that.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Not elected. He's like, no, no, no. She's the prime minister. So he bet me. Wow. We bet like a hundred bucks or whatever. And I lost the bet. And I had to pay him a hundred bucks because she was, I guess, Mulrooney resigned.
Starting point is 00:33:18 And then she was the interim manager. Yeah. Until they hired Cito Gaston. Like Paul Martin. The Paul Martin. That's exactly right. Or Joe Clark. Sorry, what year was this? This was in whatever it was. manager yeah until they hired cito gaston like paul martin the paul martin that's exactly or joe clark sorry what year was this was in whatever it was whatever 98 97 that's hilarious okay that's
Starting point is 00:33:32 a great story yeah sorry go ahead yeah no that's okay anyway um so david silver and i were like you know signing people in doing whatever you know high school students do at these events and then you know it's a big stuffy rubber chicken dinner the westin harbor castle and then you know someone introduced her i don't know who was like you know mike duffy or whoever um but this first song this was her walk-in music and i i thought even at the time it's like a little pompous okay let's hear kim campbell's walk like if she's a wrestler this is what we exactly 1993 this is the music Kim Campbell aired. It was over the loudspeakers
Starting point is 00:34:08 as she walked to the podium at the Western Harbor Castle. Yes. Ladies and gentlemen, coming to the stage. There's only two words to this song? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:23 So there's no simply in this title. That's very braggadocious of Kim to come out to this. It's a bold choice. It's a bold choice. I feel like there's Larry Zbysko's theme song as well. It's a jam, though. I was happy that Tina followed up Like the
Starting point is 00:34:46 She had a real good run From age 40 to 60 Well I don't want to tread on Cam's fun facts But when he's done his fun facts We can address the elephant in the room When it comes to the great songs of Tina Turner I feel like she's like a high approval Does anyone dislike Tina Turner?
Starting point is 00:35:03 No She's just fucking cool And I to be really dead now so yeah um so the best and actually stew makes a good point because i did think the name of the song was simply the best but no i at least when she recorded it it's the best um the song came out in august 1989 i don't know why i always thought this came later i thought this was like a mid. Well, because it's a song that just like... It's like timeless kind of song. It just plays so often. A lot of like sports highlight packages and stuff.
Starting point is 00:35:31 Yeah, like Foo Fighters, My Hero, like when you have like a great... You know, it's wrestling theme songs. It's sports, like you said. It's Kim Campbell's entrance theme. Serena Williams will get this song, right? Now, I think this was a big topic that came up a lot during Pandemic Fridays, the fact that this was originally a Bonnie Tyler song. Yes, that's a fun fact.
Starting point is 00:35:50 Wow, that's... Really? Yeah, and from the same album, the 1988 Bonnie Tyler album, Hide Your Heart. So this was still a very young song. Do you have that version? I wouldn't mind hearing that. Yeah, I'll definitely... Find it? It was on the same album that had the original version of Don't Turn Around, the Ace of Base song.
Starting point is 00:36:07 Also originally, we've litigated that. This song was co-written by Holly Knight. I know Holly Knight. Whose other songs include... Pat Benatar. Yeah, Love is a Battlefield. Very good. The Saturday Night's Main Event theme.
Starting point is 00:36:20 This guy knows his shit. Exactly. Obsession as well. Rag Doll by Aerosmith. Yeah. Wow. I've never... This is blowing my shit. Exactly. Obsession as well. Ragdoll by Aerosmith. Wow. I've never... This is blowing my mind right here.
Starting point is 00:36:31 She sounds like Tina Turner. It's a pretty like... Not much changed really in the tonality here. Wow. That's wild. Wow, that's wild. Did Jim Steinman have anything to do with this song? Well, not this one,
Starting point is 00:36:54 but the Tina version was produced by Dan Hartman. We've talked about it with a sax solo by Edgar Winter. Wow, Frankenstein. Who I think just toured with the Stu Stones friend, Luthaker, and Ringo's like touring band. Wow. The All Stars. Wow. Couple more fun facts about the Tina Turner version.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Researched by Co-op Funeral Care, not to be mistaken with Ridley Funeral Home. They did a survey, what are the most played songs at funerals in the US? And the best was top 10 most popular song. I don't know when I'm like being put in the ground. I want the best. Well, it's funny because I'm going to kick out a jam
Starting point is 00:37:29 that would be appropriate for your funeral. Yeah. And final fun fact about this. This year we saw the retirement of Serena Williams. Oh, yeah. This was the tribute song. Exactly. She's walking off at the US Open over the summer.
Starting point is 00:37:42 And unlike Kim Campbell, where it's walk out music Campbell where his walk walk out music that was like it's like walk out music for Serena Williams so there you go bookends Kim Campbell chose this as her song or do you think like the Megan boys just hit play
Starting point is 00:37:55 remember she's trying to get elected in a no win situation because if you remember the reason Brian Mulroney let her take the fall in the next election was the PC party had been in power a long time and were very unpopular.
Starting point is 00:38:06 And you remember, Jean Chrétien was about to go. How many majorities in a row? Three? I think three, yeah. I mean, this was a political juggernaut. Yeah. But I bet she would have to sign off on that, like Kim Campbell. I hope so.
Starting point is 00:38:17 But it's not grossly inappropriate. Like, she's supposed to be like, I'm the best. Vote for me. You ever heard of this? You know, I think Donald Trump plays this every time he does a speech. He's another. It's kind of fun because Tina Turner, which this is no longer
Starting point is 00:38:31 Tina Turner. I can go back to Tina. You should. Yes, sir. We got Kenna Kevin litigating the lyrics of the past. These are not for a political leader. I get washed away. Just as I'm here in your arms, it's like, yeah, we don't, are we embracing? Oh, let's shout out the FOTMs.
Starting point is 00:38:48 This is a breakfast recording, okay? These people have work to do, I'm sure. And they're still very active. I see Dale Cadeau's there. Cable guy Jeff Stewstone is there. That's my boy. Andy Pandy's there. Cable guy's seen the-
Starting point is 00:39:00 Al the Royal Pain. Cable guy Jeff has seen the plaster. I bet he has. We almost saw it ourselves on that typhoon day. Yes. We were pretty close. You know what's interesting
Starting point is 00:39:09 about Tina Turner is everything, but she, you know, when What's Love got to do with it was obviously such a huge hit, right? Even young kids
Starting point is 00:39:19 like Cam and myself, we loved it. We didn't care that it was a 40-year-old woman singing this song, walking in a leather short skirt Yeah yeah Prancing about
Starting point is 00:39:26 And you know She had great legs She was very iconic Even then in that era Of Michael Jackson And Madonna Cyndi Lauper Right
Starting point is 00:39:33 Boy George Duran Duran Lionel Richie Tina Turner Right there She'd be like Top 10 icon Halloween costumes
Starting point is 00:39:38 People had the big hair She was right up there She was right there But yeah The fact that she was able To follow It's very hard to follow up That kind of success
Starting point is 00:39:47 Right And she did With this song And We Don't Need Another Hero So if I may though If I may The elephant in the room With Tina Turner
Starting point is 00:39:53 Is that all her hits Are covers Like does it matter Not really because She's a singer But not like Someone writing it for her Like Aretha Franklin
Starting point is 00:40:01 Might record a song That was written for her Or whatever But this is literally Every single song of hers? Almost every hit from Tina Turner is a cover. Private Dancer, we've litigated here before. This one here is a cover, fun fact.
Starting point is 00:40:13 But the big one, what's the big hit again? What's Love Got To Do With It? What's Love Got To Do With It is a cover. Really? Yeah. I didn't know that. I don't care because she sings. She's amazing.
Starting point is 00:40:23 Oh, and what's the first big thing you think of when you think of Tina Turner? We don't need another Heroes, not a cover. Proud Mary. That's where I'm going. The best version of Proud Mary is, of course, Ike and Tina Turner. By far. Shout out to CCR. They're the original composers of that song.
Starting point is 00:40:37 But Proud Mary's version, of course, it's a cover. It's a CCR song. Amazing. Fucking amazing. She's a great singer. What's the song Mountain High? Not Rocky Mountain High. Mountain High enough? a cover it's a ccr song amazing fucking amazing she's a great singer i love this song mountain high rock not rocky mountain high high enough no like that was another big like 70s hit she did also a cover so yeah if you are a singer that can captivate an audience then that's an art that's
Starting point is 00:40:57 art too she's an artist okay we don't need another hero is a tina turner original there you go yeah so there you go you You're wrong then. No, I said most. Okay. You heard me right now. Lots of love for Tina. I recorded it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:09 Okay. And again, we have the two hour deadline. Remember that 90s song she had, I Don't Really Want to Fight? I liked that song. That was a good song too. I liked that song. I heard it at the dentist's office. I liked it a lot.
Starting point is 00:41:17 I remember Steamy Windows. You remember Steamy Windows? Private Dancer was a big one. Now wait. Private Dancer and What's Love Got to Do With It were two big singles, but also I Can't Stand the Rain, Against My Window. Definitely a cover, though, yeah. Which Missy Elliott ended up interpreting later on.
Starting point is 00:41:31 What's We Don't Need Another Hero? We don't need another hero. Okay, so for example, you ready for a mind blow before we leave this first jam? Because we have others to get to. Totally, yeah. Private Dancer is a fucking cover. You want to know who sang the original? Dyer Straits. Yeah, okay. I didn't know that. We've litigated that here. I know, yeah. Private Dancer is a fucking cover. You want to know who sang the original? Daryl Dire Straits.
Starting point is 00:41:45 Yeah, okay, I didn't know that. We've litigated that here. I know, but we've litigated lots of stuff. And also, funny.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Mark Knopfler. Now, if you go and listen to the Private Dancer, Tina Turner song, you can distinctly hear Mark Knopfler's guitar playing when you listen to that
Starting point is 00:41:59 song, which I actually heard it on the radio at some point in the last week and noticed it for the first time. Here's a distinctive. If we had our normal take three, four hours, I would be doing all this.
Starting point is 00:42:11 Oh yeah, he loves you. Who just asked if I've won. I've already won. I haven't even played a song yet and I've won. Let's move on to my first The Jam. This is Cam's Funeral Jam? No. I'll tell you. That one's coming up.
Starting point is 00:42:29 Oh. That'll be my second jam. Is this a big movie jam? It's been in a few things, for sure. If you want to set something in the 80s, you might go with this jam. It's not like 16 Candles? Maybe not. Maybe not.
Starting point is 00:42:47 Maybe not. Feels like a song Cam would like. Yeah. And Sean Pasternak would probably like it as well. This is Canadian, right? No. Well, what am I thinking? You're thinking of Spoons.
Starting point is 00:43:07 Shout out to Rob Green. Like Images in Vogue. It's a good jam. Retro Night Classic. It's a Manchester band. It's a Manchester band. I promise. I promise you I will.
Starting point is 00:43:36 It's called I Promise? The Promise. The Promise, yeah. The, has to be the. Absolutely. This is the debut single from, I mentioned they're from Manchester, but the British band When in Rome came out in 1987.
Starting point is 00:43:49 I wonder if it was in a movie. Probably in a bunch of movies, to be honest. Find out from me. But I do want to shout out an FOTM. This FOTM did show up at Palma's Kitchen for TMLX 5, and I hope we see him at TMLX 11. His buddy Peter Gross will be there. But this is the all-time favorite song of FOTM Perry Lefkoe. Really? The Promise.
Starting point is 00:44:09 Okay. Perry Lefkoe, big Stu guy. And his brother is a big concert promoter in this. Absolutely. Right there at the Gary's, right? It's a big deal. Elliot Lefkoe. Yeah, Strange Advance.
Starting point is 00:44:20 Right. And a guy who I'd love to get on this fucking program, but hasn't agreed to do it yet. Who's saying I touch roses who's that now I know where I know this from it was in Napoleon Dynamite okay big song in that movie absolutely
Starting point is 00:44:36 Andy Pandy just called that out like 5 seconds ago well keep your eye on the chat I gotta get in there too to find out what's going on and who's saying I touch roses I touch myself that too there was a bit of backlash the chat. I got to get in there too to find out what's going on. And who's saying I touch roses? I touch myself. That too. There was a bit of backlash when this broke because people felt
Starting point is 00:44:52 some people felt it was a little too much like New Order. I actually thought it was New Order until you just said When in Rome. Because it sounds like New Order or OMD or one of those. It sounds like the psychedelic furs Richard Butler, dude. Yeah, Book of Love, I Touch Roses.
Starting point is 00:45:08 Thank you, VP, not sales. Nice. Now, because I want to hit the two-hour deadline, I'm going to truncate this jam, and I'm going to just do a quick little fun fact or mind blow, if you will. Let's see which one of you two can name the artist. I know they don't sound the way I plan them to be. Let's see which one of you two. Can you name the artist? Canadian?
Starting point is 00:45:32 It's like Goldfinger or something. That's a good guess. Keep going. Yellow Card. That's a good guess too. Mr. T Experience. Newfound Glory? Yep.
Starting point is 00:45:48 That's my boy. He's the bass player from that band. Oh, what's his name? Ian Grushka. Okay. I love when you're connected to an artist. They're a big deal. Yeah, well, they put you in that yellow card. Yeah, the Warped Tour crowd.
Starting point is 00:45:59 Yeah, it's a bit like an emo punk thing. But they do hilarious covers like this. Right. So just a fun cover of the promise by newfound glory. They're out of Florida. I believe, uh, Cambrio is asking if anyone played the greatest love of all.
Starting point is 00:46:14 Well, they wouldn't because it's gotta be a two word jam starting with the word the something right. Two word title. First word, the two words. First word, the sounds like trying to do. Two words, first word, the.
Starting point is 00:46:26 Sounds like. Trying to do like two words, first word. Sounds like. Stu Stone, any words before I kick out your first jam? Yeah. Yeah. I would like to say that the artist I'm about to play not only served up this hit, but also served up some real tasty chicken back in the day and uh was quite delicious and my mom's favorite artist of all time it's your mom's favorite
Starting point is 00:46:51 artist of all time well your mom who i'm her least favorite uh attendee of a tmlx event of all time but i would like to dedicate this to your mom despite the fact that she bad mouths me to my own mother. When moms collide. That's not true. But yes, this is a really tasty chicken. What is it? A proprietor? Is that the right word? Yeah, like Colonel Sanders' Eat Your Heart Out. Eat Your Heart Out.
Starting point is 00:47:16 This gentleman is a monger. And a great pitcher, right? The Rangers? Yes, the pitcher from the Rangers' nickname was also this song. Okay, let's the pitcher from the Rangers. Nickname was also this song. Okay, let's get to it. Also a WCW jobber. On a train bound for nowhere. Love it.
Starting point is 00:47:36 I met up with a gambler. There's such like a Lionel Richiness to him. That makes sense because Lionel wrote a bunch of his songs. Well, Lady was written by Lionel Richiness. But this was not written by Lionel Richiness. No That makes sense Because Lionel wrote A bunch of his songs Well Lady was written By Lionel Richie But this was not Written by Lionel Richie No It was not So YYZGore nailed it
Starting point is 00:47:49 For what it's worth By King Schmaltz I like the Like Yeah yeah It's like a Wooden
Starting point is 00:47:59 Yeah Here it comes Kind of a clippity clop Shout out to Hayref On the live stream Yeah. Here it comes. Have a clippity-clop. Shout out to Hayref on the live stream. Live.toronto.com. Hayref. Hayref.
Starting point is 00:48:12 What do we know about Hayref? We have much to learn. Hey! What a great song. Honestly, I actually, because it's from that greatest hits my mom used to play when I was a kid I could cry right now, you want me to? Please Although maybe I'll wait till my mom dies Shout out to Ridley Tudor home before I do that
Starting point is 00:48:36 You got to know when to hold them Know when to fold them Know when to walk away Know when to run You. Know when to walk away. Know when to run. You gotta count your money. When you're sitting at the table there'll be time enough
Starting point is 00:48:53 for counting. When the deal ends. That's actually good advice that he just gives you. Don't count your money at the table. You don't do that. This looks like when Netflix first started. They would mail you like there was an option. Don't count your money at the table. You don't do that. This looks like when Netflix first started, and they would mail you, like, there was an option,
Starting point is 00:49:08 or zip.ca. They still do that, I think. Do they really? Netflix still does that, I think. Blockbuster could have bought them for a million bucks or something. Here's some stuff to tell you about this song, if you'd like to know. I would love to know. This is Kenny Rogers.
Starting point is 00:49:23 You know, he had a career prior to being a solo artist. You knew that, obviously. The New Edition. No. But, you know, I'll let you guys do some research on your own on that. Not the New Edition? I just checked in to see what condition my condition was in. Isn't that New Edition?
Starting point is 00:49:36 New Edition is Bobby Brown and Albert DeVoe. There's two. Okay, but I don't think that's correct. I think it's correct. Big Lebowski, right? Yeah, and it's great jamming. You want to look that up? I'll do a fast's correct. I think it's correct. Big Lebowski, right? Yeah, and it's great jamming. Do you want to look that up? I'll do a fast-forward.
Starting point is 00:49:48 I'm sure it is. But this ended up becoming Kenny Rogers' signature song. You know, he's had other hits, but this is... First edition. Oh, first and not new edition. Exactly. Oh, shit. Signature song, and it's kind of a depressing song
Starting point is 00:50:03 about a guy who's riding on a train and gets some advice in exchange for a cigarette and then the guy smokes a cigarette and dies at the end of the song. Spoiler. Spoiler. Does that come after this part? And there's some good background vocals here from Loretta Lynn back there?
Starting point is 00:50:26 No. Do you know that there's a bunch of movies? This song became so popular that there was movies, okay? We're talking about Kenny Rogers as the Gambler, followed by Kenny Rogers as the Gambler, The Adventure Continues, then Kenny Rogers as the Gambler, The Adventure Continues, then Kenny Rogers as the Gambler Part 3, The Legend Continues, then the Gambler
Starting point is 00:50:50 Returns, The Luck of the Draw, then the Gambler 5, Playing for Keeps. So between 1980 and 1994, there were five Gambler movies? I haven't seen any of them. Well, they're not really aimed at our demo back then. This I know, this is true. This is true and uh yeah this is absolutely true did your mom watch it
Starting point is 00:51:08 i don't know i should ask her but i could tell you that he also filmed a show in aging court i want to say like where uncle bobby shout out to uncle bobby cox also on the live.com was that where he filmed yeah like a lot of stuff was filmed and i think johnny cash might have had something going on there too but i think I think Kenny Rogers had a show there. Bizarre. I think John Biner took over the song. I have a few mind blows about this tune. Yes, please.
Starting point is 00:51:31 Well, if you want to just go ahead and play, much like Tina Turner, not an original Kenny Rogers song. What? Wow, that was pretty good dynamic recording. By the way, the background vocals we heard is from the Jordanaires. Oh, that's Elvis' backup. Elvis Presley, not Elvis Costello. So here's the original version of the song,
Starting point is 00:52:16 which was recorded by a gentleman by the name of Bobby Bear. The song was written by this guy called Dan Schlitz. Am I saying that right? I think that's a beer, Schl beer. And the song was a dud. Wow. You know how it ended up getting recorded? Tell me. Shel Silverstein urged...
Starting point is 00:52:35 My name is Sue. Where the sidewalk ends, the giving tree. Shel Silverstein, whose face haunted the back of books, his giant face on the back of his books. Super scary. Yeah, like a heel. It was very frightening for kids, but boy, The Giving Tree is my favorite book ever. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:51 But he's the reason why this song even happens, because he loved the song so much when his friend played it for him. He said, you have to record this. So it got recorded, and I got another mind blow for you because before kenny rogers even put out the song and it became a hit and several artists swung and missed with this including the one we're listening to now bobby bear bobby bear lots of swing and misses and that's kind of like tina turner's maybe mo is like you know the songs people believe in them and then there's a swing and miss, they go again. That happens a lot, like the Pointer Sisters.
Starting point is 00:53:27 Totally. That covered Prince songs. Dust off these. Yeah, songs that like the A&R is like, I'm not going to give up on this song. I know it's a hit. We have to record it until it becomes a hit, and some songs get recorded so many times until it happens, which is this is one of those songs.
Starting point is 00:53:42 So now let's blow everybody's mind with the version that was a swing and a miss that came out. And let me know if you know who's singing this one, Ken. About 20 years ago, on a train bound for nowhere, I met up with the gambler. We were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns staring through the window at the darkness. Leslie, the theme is songs that are two
Starting point is 00:54:15 words that start the something. If you're just joining us. Two words. First word, the. Cam, name that artist. I mean, this has got to be Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash Money. He's a big deal. So Johnny Cash puts out the gambler.
Starting point is 00:54:33 Doesn't take off. You've got to think at that point they're going to give up on this fucking song when Johnny Cash can't convert it. Because he's money. But, you know, Kenny Rogers ends up taking it and it becomes a song that everybody now knows all around the world.
Starting point is 00:54:49 And it's a timeless jam that makes Mike cry now. It's a karaoke favorite. I like the texture of that man's voice. Like, that's a great voice Kenny's got. By the way, Bobby Bear, I don't remember, he had a son, Bobby Bear Jr., who had a very mild hit on CFNY, a song called You Blew Me Off. I don't remember that one.
Starting point is 00:55:08 Do you remember hearing this? You Blew Me Off? No, I remember Electric Blue. Okay. Anyway. Now, quick tie-in. Michelle Silverstein wrote My Name is Sue that Johnny Cash had a hit with. So there's a Michelle Silverstein connection here.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Okay. Is Michelle Silverstein Canadian? No. You know who is the Shel Silverstein of Canada? Robert Munch. Billy Van. I was going to say Mendelssohn Joe. Judy Blume. Because Shel Silverstein, he did all his music
Starting point is 00:55:35 like freaking at the... Is Judy Blume Canadian? No. Judy Blume's not, but she died, right? 104? Gordon Corman. Gordon Corman is from Thornhill. Went to Thornley. Went to Thornley. Huge.
Starting point is 00:55:48 That was some of the conversation, I think, before Rusty, Cam and I discussing. All the names. All the names that seem to go to Thornley. For like the 5,000th time. Yeah, like, I feel like, I swear to you, there's no joke, and we're going to get to Cam's second jam now, but I feel like I went to Thornley. Like when people stop me in the stream
Starting point is 00:56:06 and go, what high school did you go to? I go, Thornley! And I have to correct myself. I think we were talking about Jose Contreras. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:11 Because Lily Frost, right, was, by the way, did anyone here listen to Lily Frost on Tronamite? I listened to part of it.
Starting point is 00:56:17 I like that Jake Gold went on to manage a tragic leap as a dishwasher at that pickle barrel. The home of the Mark Wiseblood Stewstone Summit. Gordon Corman is
Starting point is 00:56:29 Hayref's neighbor. Okay, that's cool. Or his dad is his neighbor. Leslieville chimes in with Judy Blume owns a bookstore in Florida. Heard her on a podcast. Which city? I'd like to go visit that. As a kid. So she's alive. Who died then? Beverly Cleary.
Starting point is 00:56:45 I'm confusing Judy Blume. Now, these were celebrities when I was a kid, these authors. Beverly Cleary. She was the, what, the Babysitter's Club or something like that? Maybe not. Ramona. Super fudge. Ramona, super fudge.
Starting point is 00:56:56 That's what it was. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. There you go. And then Judy Blume, Freckle Juice. That was like part of the curriculum was to read Freckle Juice. And those were your gateway drugs to Gordon Corbin. Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret. Bruno and Boots.
Starting point is 00:57:09 Totally. It can't be happening at McDonald's. Charlotte's Web, that was another required reading. Jacob Tutu was a required reading. Spooky one, yeah. I was going to say B.C. Andrews, but I feel like that's a bit older. Like Flowers in the Attic. The Velveteen Rabbit.
Starting point is 00:57:24 Yes, of course. Eric Wilson? We've talked about Eric Wilson before. What about those mini books? Remember like Peter Rabbit and all those things? They were like little miniature books. Beatrix Potter. That's what it was. Hey, I'm gonna have a little bit. And you guys know the bowls. Like we had bowls.
Starting point is 00:57:40 Like Beatrix Potter bowls and cups and stuff. This would be something you buy a newborn or whatever. Okay. Beatrix Potter. Frog and Toad are friends. Do you know Frog and Toad? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:50 Yeah, yeah. Familiar? Can we stay on this for a minute, Mike? I feel like we're going to start talking like Song of the South. Oh, Zippity-Doo-Dah is still a great jam.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Like we might not be able to see that on Disney+. But that song, Stand Alone, Zippity-Doo-Dah is wonderful. It's not on Disney+, for some obvious reason. Have you ever heard the podcast You Must Remember This?
Starting point is 00:58:10 At some point, I probably did. There was also those little Mr. Messy and Mr. Oh, yeah. Those were little books. Absolutely. I'm just thinking, because the Scholastic Book Fair used to come around, and I was the kid that went and ordered every book. I would be like, Oh, yeah. It's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:58:26 Yeah. So they would come and they would deliver like each kid would get thing. And then I, out of a box. So can I ask you, cause in my school, in my school, we had like a fair,
Starting point is 00:58:34 like a fair, like a book fair. Right. But some people had, cause I would share this on certain social media channels, et cetera. And then certain people would be like, Oh my God,
Starting point is 00:58:41 we just got like the catalog and we had to order our stuff. Like we didn't have the fair part. There was both. Yeah, we had both. We had the fair. Okay. But I loved. It really encouraged reading because it got us excited about books.
Starting point is 00:58:54 There was two catalogs that were required viewing during my childhood. The Scholastic Book Fair was one of them. Oh, Consumer Distributing. Same memory. Catalog was the second best. You'd go through and you'd pick, even play, which toy would you pick? Circle. hood the schoolastic book fair was one of them oh and the consumers distributing same memory catalog was the second best you'd go through you'd pick what like even play like which toy would you pick circle yeah this is a shit that this podcast was built on like this is why uh ed conroy got in the hall totally unrelatable to our children but you fucking but you have to be a certain age from a
Starting point is 00:59:20 certain place in time like uh for example these these same things that resonate with us miss with my wife, for example. Like, you really have to narrow in on like GTA Gen X. Nate the Great in the sticky case. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:32 But yeah, nowadays they have, what's that guy? So ironically, I gave all of that money to Scholastic as a kid and it ended up coming back to me tenfold
Starting point is 00:59:41 because the magic school bus was a school bus. Yeah, royalties. Yeah, you got points on this. So it ended up, you know, it ended up working back to me tenfold because the magic school bus was royalties yeah you got points it ended up you know we ended up it ended up working out totally oh yeah alligator pie that was a big one oh my god yeah dennis lee yeah but he had uh also he had a garbage delight design so this was like the fall of alligator pie which i bought with that scholastic fair i bought garbage Francesco eats Vincenzo eats stinky meat or something. That was a Robert Munch book.
Starting point is 01:00:06 Oh yeah, well Munch was... I still cry. I Love You Forever. You guys must have been Choose Your Own Adventure. Of course. I Love You was one thing. What about Encyclopedia Brown? Encyclopedia Brown!
Starting point is 01:00:22 Yes! Love that guy. One time he solved the case because somebody called him alvin when we only knew him as alan he's like how do you know he's not an albert like i'm alan he's an you knew he was an alvin so you were the hardy boys busted hardy boys oh i even read some nancy drew books and i didn't care what people said about very progressive gender's human construct anyway so whatever whatever. Okay. Oh, God. I was about to shout something. Encyclopedia Brown.
Starting point is 01:00:47 That's a good one. That's old school. Yeah, I love that. The Monster at the End of This Book. Did you have that one? No. Oh, that's a good book. Yeah, it was Grover or whatever. Okay, so Grover spends the whole book being like, don't turn the page, whatever you do. And he's like building a thing and then you turn the page. He's like, I told you,
Starting point is 01:01:03 don't turn it. Was it a pop-up and he's like no but pop-up books were great yeah premium item yeah then at the end of the spoiler in case you guys were waiting for the movie i don't know if it's ever coming but at the end of the book you know who the monster is grover or sometimes it would be like a mirror and like it's it's you that'd be great here's a fun fact from 12 times okay give us a fun fact then introduce your second jam. You're the one with the deadline. Controversially left $1.2 billion
Starting point is 01:01:32 come to a Toronto woman who worked for him. Okay, that's fun. I didn't catch much of that. Anyway, this song might be the most contemporary jam. Someone actually called it out on the Twitter service. Sweet Valley High.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Yes, Sweet Valley High. That's great. There you go. jam someone actually called it out on on on the twitter service sweet valley high resident type thing valley high that's great there you go oh and this was actually on my shortlist cam so glad you're kicking it out trying to think of what it's called like the what see if stew can get it by the end of this i know the song in the chorus in the chorus don't write yourself off yet In the course. This has been in movies. Hey! I gotta get one of those Cabana cannabis things to give to Corp Cabana. Do you have any swag?
Starting point is 01:02:22 Do you have a hat or anything? Yeah, but can you get me a photo? You just smell weed. What's the song called? The what? The name of the song is The Middle. The Middle by Jimmy Eat World. I thought the song, The Middle is,
Starting point is 01:02:43 Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle. I actually considered that too. That's a good jam too. Is that called The Middle? I think so, yeah. So Jimmy E World, I can't wait to hear your fun facts, but there were two jams on the same album that we used to pump before slow pitch games, which was this and The Sweetness. Sweetness, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:57 And was that one word, The Sweetness, or was it The Sweetness? One word. Okay, Sweetness. Yeah. Go ahead. Canada Kev's giving out his Beatrix Potter books, by the way. Oh, Canada Kev. Yeah, I see that now.
Starting point is 01:03:08 He's got them all. Wow. You just had those within arm's length? Also, HeyRef wants to know how many years did consumers distributing exist, but it was all my core years of wanting Christmas presents. I would say like 70s right into the 90s, mid-90s. Definitely made it into the 90s. Yeah, I feel like the internet killed that.
Starting point is 01:03:25 One of the rare stores where you would just buy things based on a photo of it, kind of ahead of its time. Because now on the internet, you go on Amazon, you buy things just looking at a picture of it. And it was like the beer store. I remember thinking, it's like a beer store because the stuff came out on the rollers. Yeah, and the rollers.
Starting point is 01:03:40 Sounds like you may have to do a Book Fair deep dive. A lot of people are just like, can't let it go, the combo here. I'll get Gordon Corman as our special guest for that. Yes. Go ahead, Cam. I'm sorry. Okay. So this is something I've featured on my blog a lot,
Starting point is 01:03:54 but this song was such a big hit and continues to be such a big hit just for like relative terms. So this song has over 600 million streams on Spotify. Okay. So by comparison, the most streamed but the smashing pumpkins 1979 1979 is like 4 4 20 million one day we should do a thing where we name the artist and you have to guess what's the most stream song on spotify i like that idea because 1979 would have been my guess but that's a great game but like pearl jam jeremy the most streamed song,
Starting point is 01:04:27 412 million jams. So basically this song is like 50% more. Just to show, which I think is also when it came out, because it came out during the internet era. This song's already over, so I'll wrap this up quick. I thought it was an older song. I think it's like 2002. It was during my slow pitch career,
Starting point is 01:04:42 which means it was early 2000s. Actually, it came out before 9- Well, I also... 2002, 2003. Actually, it came out before 9-11 because these songs were banned because the name of that album was Bleed American. Yeah, which was one of the ridiculous banned songs. Well, that went in the great song that introduced us to Stu's Penis,
Starting point is 01:04:56 which was Bodies by Drowning Pool. There you go. Because we had a typhoon, and then you got naked. We did not peak. I'm going to cram Ezra E. Geography Corner in here. Why don't you just play the song again? It's only a minute long.
Starting point is 01:05:07 We don't have a fun fact. Do we know where Jimmy Eat World is from? San Diego. I would guess California as well. They are from Mesa, Arizona. Also the hometown of Buck Owens. Jose Mesa. Big deal.
Starting point is 01:05:20 I don't know if you guys know this guy, Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters. Yeah, I didn't know about him guys know this guy, Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters. Yeah, I didn't know his name. He's from there, as well as Mike Brown, the NBA coach who used to coach LeBron and succeeded Phil Jackson in the Lakers. Wow. This is on the Wikipedia page. I'm not sure why, but it said Prince did a cover of this song at an Oscars after party in 2009 and a bootleg of this just surfaced like in the last few months.
Starting point is 01:05:45 I'd love to hear that. Can you find that, Mike? I think that'd be good. Breaking news though that Consumers Distributing actually is as old as 1957. It went from 57 to 96.
Starting point is 01:05:55 So about 40 years or so. A little older than Woolworth. There you go. Not as old as Sears Roebuck though. Can you find that Prince cover? Oh yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:06:04 Keep talking while I look it up. That's the fun facts. Cam, do you love this song? I like it a lot. I don't know if I love it, but sure. It's a great jam. Jimmy Eat World. Jimmy Eat World, the middle.
Starting point is 01:06:19 Oh, you got it here. That's really cool that Prince covered this. Prince. That's really cool that Prince covered this. This is so crazy that Prince covered this. This is good. They must be thrilled
Starting point is 01:06:32 that he did this. Well, he didn't release it, though. It's just live. This is just on YouTube, then? Yeah, it's just like a potato recording on YouTube. Wow. This is so, like,
Starting point is 01:06:44 not a Prince song. Like the swing of it, you know? Does he sing it? There's a funny comment on YouTube. It goes, when Prince covers your song, it sounds like you covered a Prince song. Remember he covered the Foo Fighters song at the Super Bowl. Like the best of you in that medley he did?
Starting point is 01:07:03 Okay. Wow, this is great. Okay, there you go. It's better than the original. Remember he covered Radiohead? Yeah, creepy. And then he demanded it comes down. And then Tom York said, fuck it, that's our song.
Starting point is 01:07:18 We don't want it down. It's our song. Wow, this is great. It's so great. I'm like smiling here in Prince's mission. Good job, Prince. I think Prince is probably the GOAT. He could be.
Starting point is 01:07:40 Just don't look him in the eyes and all will be well. Okay, good stuff, guys. And now time for my second jam. Good one, Cam. Let me just elegantly exit from that great Prince cover of The Middle by Jimmy Eat World. And Leslie Ville agrees that Prince was a musical genius. Shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. And speaking of shouting out Ridley Funeral Home,
Starting point is 01:08:02 this is the jam that would be appropriate at a Cam Gordon funeral. Trying to figure out, is it like... I think I've seen this band up to, I think it is. I think I've seen this band up to, I think it is. It's not. Is this a newer song? 2000s. Sounds like Flaming Lips. Is this like the Sex is on Fire guys?
Starting point is 01:08:47 Nope. That's pretty close. This is from 06. We'll let it brew a bit because it kicks in and I fucking love this song. Big chorus. Or only one Ooooooooh Ooooooooh Here it comes.
Starting point is 01:09:33 Right, don't tell me. Okay. Sounds really familiar. Like, in my world, which was basically, like, at this point was, like, CFNY, I guess, but in my world, and YouTube and stuff, but in my world, this was a massive, massive song. I'd like to get it on my phone.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Was this on the radio? Was it a hit? I think so. What is it? I think of it as a big song. It seemed to be everywhere. What is it called? The Funeral. Oh, well.
Starting point is 01:09:56 This is Band of Horses. I would never have guessed that. But it sounds like so many other artists. Yeah, Kev says My Mourning Jacket. That's a good comparison. Oh, I saw them open for Pearl Jam a couple times. Yeah, they were good. These guys opened when Pavement reunited
Starting point is 01:10:09 the first time, not the most recent time, at the Island. They were one of the openers them in Broken Social Scene. You know another band that might be in the circle would be like Death Cab for Cutie, maybe. Yeah. Like that mid-2000s. Some are more like gentle, but yeah, sort of. Or Bon Iver, like kind of in the mix too.
Starting point is 01:10:27 System of a Down? Is that too hard? No, that's too hard. But okay, so this was, yeah, the band put this out in 2006. It was on their debut album, Everything All the Time. This was their lead single. Where did I think one of the things that really helped it was somebody put together like a skateboarding video. There was like a skateboard video where this was the soundtrack.
Starting point is 01:10:47 And it was everywhere when viral, at least 2006 viral. But I bet you there's a lot of Gen X or younger that would put the funeral by Banner Horse. This probably stays strong from Spotify suggestions. I bet this gets aggregated into playlists and stuff. I feel like it's an iconic song. It sounds new to me. I don't know this song, but it sounds like it would be on any one of these alternative rock,
Starting point is 01:11:18 like it came out this year type of thing. It's also got a Harry Styles last album kind of vibe. There's a bit of thing. It's also got like a Harry Styles last album kind of vibe. There's a bit of that. VP saw this band, Band of Horses, at a Samsung corporate show at South by Southwest with The Roots. Wow. He says in attendance with him, VP of Sales, was Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Starting point is 01:11:40 Those are some big names. Huge names. That's the biggest Gordon since Cam. Oh my goodness. Okay. Just looking. Let's see. Canada Kev says Band of Horses are great. You know why they have three named actors like that? Do you know why? Because you can...
Starting point is 01:11:55 Michael J. Fox. There was already a Michael Fox. Right. That's all. Was there already a Stu Eisenstein? No. But there is another Stuart Stone. A casting director who I'm often confused with. Reminds me, I've been staring at your Starbucks cup for the last hour. I know, it's spelled wrong. And it's spelled S-T-E-W.
Starting point is 01:12:15 Yeah, that's just rude. Like you'd eat a stew. Yeah. I'd totally go for some stew. Can you tell us what drink that is? I'm looking at it. A caramel macchiato. What does that cost you?
Starting point is 01:12:26 That was $7.50. What a joke. I couldn't believe it. That's a big Mac and I couldn't believe it. $7.50 for a fucking cup of coffee and I had to pay it because where else was I going to go? Kev points out that assassins and killers get three names too. I think he's talking about
Starting point is 01:12:42 John Wayne Gacy. And Lee Harvey Oswald. Stuart Lewis Stone. SLS. $7.50 for a coffee. I just get black coffee. Which is like $2.50.
Starting point is 01:12:57 That's $5 more for a squirt of caramel? Flavor shot. Ridiculous. Alright, before I pass the baton, shout out to Donovan Bailey, who's here tomorrow. Is he? Yeah, 11 a.m. You want to come by and say hi? In fact, that picture of me on the star gets swapped out
Starting point is 01:13:12 for a picture of Donovan Bailey crossing the finish line in Atlanta. That was a big moment. I think it's the biggest Canadian Olympic moment. That and then maybe Sidney Crosby's goal. You know what? I would say that the Ben Johnson moment was first, but then it got taken away.
Starting point is 01:13:30 But I know where I was when I watched that. Sure, but I know where I was when I watched Donovan too. Yeah. But Donovan Bailey made us all so proud. And he did it clean
Starting point is 01:13:39 and he won the 4x100 meter the next Saturday. So a quick little mind blow fun fact for you. I think Stu will name this artist. I'm not sure if Cam will. We'll see. Play Pat Wood up.
Starting point is 01:13:52 Oh. My heart thumped not from being nervous sometimes. I'm thinking God made me special here. Is he sampled that last song? So I got to download this now. So what's this one called? The Prayer. This would have qualified as well in our title today. The Jams. Kid I got to download this now. So what's this one called? The Prayer. This would have been
Starting point is 01:14:05 qualified as well in our title today. The Jam. Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi. Oh, right. So Kid Cudi's The Prayer is built upon
Starting point is 01:14:14 the aforementioned Band of Horses. Pretty true rendition. Like it's not Kid Cudi was one of the first guys to jump off the Kanye bandwagon before anybody did.
Starting point is 01:14:26 Right, because he's all over that dark, twisted, beautiful nightmare and all that. They had a whole album together,
Starting point is 01:14:31 the two of them. Was it Ghosts and Kids or something? Yeah, I remember that. Kanye. I think Kid Cudi is a good artist.
Starting point is 01:14:47 Yeah, he's great. He's great. Another good funeral song, so here you go. Okay, shout out to Ridley Funeral Home. Now, I'll bring it down because we have the great Stu Stone setting up his second jam. Yeah, I would say that another great Canadian Olympic moment would have been did Lennox Lewis do something?
Starting point is 01:15:08 Yeah, he won a gold medal in boxing, yeah, for Canada. And then he became British. Is Sean O'Sullivan
Starting point is 01:15:14 remembered? Of course. Shouted out by Maestro Fresh West. That's right. Like Sean O'Sullivan. So, and then,
Starting point is 01:15:21 let's talk about my homie, Egerton Marcus. He talks about how Egerton Marcus didn't get the press of Sean O'Sullivan. Wasn't Razor Ruddock Canadian also? Yeah, he had the two belts with Mike Tyson. And he never got knocked down. Well, George Chiavallo
Starting point is 01:15:35 style, he finished and Tyson won by a decision both times. George Chiavallo as well. So what do all of those guys have in common? They're all Canadian. they're all boxers good trivia question my apologies here we go I am just a poor boy
Starting point is 01:15:59 though my story is seldom told I spot it by my distance and then nobody has there's been no controversy yet My story is seldom told. Okay, I see. It's like, right. And then nobody has... It's like, what is this called? There's been no controversy yet, because everybody's jams are two-word titles with the... All lies and jests. Still the man hears what he wants to hear
Starting point is 01:16:15 and disregards the rest. Not to be confused with the hurricane. Shout out to Bob Dylan. We also covered this song, Bob Dylan. And it was here. That all happened here. The Hurricane. It was Toronto.
Starting point is 01:16:28 Hurricane Carter. But also, Bob Dylan also covered this song. Ironically. There you go. This song's called The Boxer,
Starting point is 01:16:36 by the way. But I never knew it was, I thought when I was a kid it was just called Lai Lai Lai Lai Lai Lai Lai Lai. Yeah, I totally had no idea
Starting point is 01:16:43 what this was called. Well, let's play it. And then we'll talk about it. We've got to get to the good part. Okay. Lie, lie, lie. Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie. Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie.
Starting point is 01:17:25 La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la the interviewer was like, you know, you have a partnership with John Oates. He's like, no, I don't. And John Oates and I just did some music together, and that was it. I'm like, huh? And that's similar to this Simon and Garfunkel thing. A lot of these musical duos that you think are, it just doesn't end well. Like the Everly brothers who are actually brothers and then go to hate each other. Ike and Tina. Well, that's a bad account.
Starting point is 01:17:45 He abused her. Simon and Garfunkel. Their fifth album, this song is on. So by 1970, they had five albums already. I guess people just recorded so much music back then. You know? Well, I mean, I just did an episode on the Guess Who? And it's like they
Starting point is 01:18:05 were putting out like two albums a year like it was just that's like one beatles used to do that yeah just this song was recorded uh was released in 69 as a standalone single sold 400 000 copies and it was uh very rare that a standalone single would end up on an album and then this was so popular that they included it on their album. Which I think Mark Weisblatt listens to quite frequently. It's interesting that it's not actually about a boxer.
Starting point is 01:18:37 It's about a dog. It's actually about, Paul Simon says that he wrote it about himself. Being that like, he all the critics and people were constantly beating them down. And this was... Like metaphoric boxing. Yeah, metaphorically, he was like, you know, we're going to keep going here.
Starting point is 01:18:54 Quick fun fact. When I was a kid, I used to hear Scarborough Fair, and I thought it was about the borough in Toronto. Well, there was like a subdivision called Scarborough Fair, I remember, because they had that commercial. Very haunting. The Boxer was a follow-up single to Scarborough Fair. Mrs. Robinson, which was a huge
Starting point is 01:19:13 hit. Also covered by Lemonade. Yeah, that's true. That's where I first got into that song. The original recording of this song, which we're listening to, is the most highly produced... The original recording, which we're listening to right now, is the most highly produced song that they ever did. It took over 100 hours to record this song. 100 hours, Mike.
Starting point is 01:19:35 Let me hear a bit of it. The recording was performed at multiple locations. It took different studios to put this thing together in New York City, Nashville, and Columbia. Not Columbia the country. The district? Yes. Also at this recording session, Art Garfunkel invited a woman named Linda Grossman to come to the session, and they ended up getting married.
Starting point is 01:20:02 Any relation to Al Grossman? I was going to say Albert. No. Sister orman. No. Sister or something. Okay. Paul Simon claims that he was reading the Bible at the time, and that's where phrases such as workman's wages come from and seeking out the power quarters.
Starting point is 01:20:16 I'm not paying attention to any of those lyrics. Have either of you guys ever read the Bible? I mean, I saw the movie. It was long. Song was number seven in the United States of America, number three in Canada, 400K copies of the single sold, which was a lot at that time. Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie.
Starting point is 01:20:34 Nice. Now, that song is called The Boxer, number seven. Number three in Canada, 400,000 copies sold. I want you to really pay attention to those numbers because the mind blow is kind of depressing. Well, you're going to have to play the mind blow. The mind blow is kind of depressing. So that song is called The Boxer by the great Simon and Garfunkel,
Starting point is 01:21:01 number seven in the USA, number three in Canada. 400,000 copies sold. This song is called The Box by a rapper called Roddy Ricch, which was the number one song. I was going to say this was a hit. Which was the number one song for most of a year. Sold 4.7 million copies. And got nominated for a Grammy, including Song of the Year.
Starting point is 01:21:27 The Boxer? No. The Box? Yes. If you were to play The Boxer in the box and to ask which one, you know, charted higher, which one sold more, which one was more, got nominated for more awards, you would pick The Boxer probably 10 out of 10 times. True.
Starting point is 01:21:43 But the game has changed, my friend but the game has changed, my friends. They weren't streaming the Boxer back in the 60s. So there you go. Roddy Rich. So there's no sampling here of the Boxer. No. I just wanted to say the Boxer.
Starting point is 01:21:59 Yeah, would have qualified. No, just the Boxer and the Boxer. Like Cam says, you could have kicked this jam out. There's a song by Orbital called The Box. Did Roddy Ricch, was he like a one and done? Lemon in a box. Was he a one and done guy? I know nothing about it.
Starting point is 01:22:13 No, I don't know. I feel like 1236 will know. The artist that's doing this song, Roddy Ricch. I wonder if he ever, did he come back with more? I got to plead ignorance because, and I hope nobody gets upset with me, but I'm a big fan of hip hop, but this style of hip hop doesn't actually appeal to me. And I don't particularly. It's like what, early 2010s probably?
Starting point is 01:22:37 Like, sort of, anyway, just, you know, to each his own. Fun fact from Moose Grumpy, the Everly Brothers played with Simon and Garfunkel on their reunion tour, so everybody got back together on their reunion. So they're dead now, the Everly Brothers, but thankfully,
Starting point is 01:22:51 you know, thankfully, Garfunkel, no, I was going to finish that sentence and say that Garfunkel and Paul Simon are still alive.
Starting point is 01:22:59 I think Paul Simon retired like he did his farewell tour, do you know? And he was married for a period of time to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. I don't know if he was married to the Bohemians.
Starting point is 01:23:09 Well, that didn't go well for them. I don't think it went well for them at all. But I always remember that line from that big hit she had was, On the top of a cereal box, religion. Apparently, pretty cringe lyrics. Really? Big hit, though. Didn't they have like legal troubles?
Starting point is 01:23:26 What I am, right? Paul Simon and her though, didn't they have legal issues? Oh, I'm sure. I don't think it ended well. Okay. Good stuff, man. Good stuff. So now we're rounding the corner. I'm going to do a quick time check. We each have one jam. We're doing great. We've got plenty of time. You know, we got one jam
Starting point is 01:23:42 each and just mind blows and stuff. Okay. So I'm going to kick No, Cam Gordon's got plenty of time. We got one jam each and his mind blows and stuff. Okay, so I'm going to kick... No, Cam Gordon's got a third jam. By the way, I'm distracted here. They just announced the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. I always like looking at the worst names on the ballot. Like some of these names... Is Ernie Witt on there?
Starting point is 01:23:57 No, but a lot of former Blue Jays. Ari Dickey, Jason Wirth. Wasn't Mike Napoli technically a Blue Jay? He never played here. Yeah, I feel like he was in the blue jay uh he never played here he got true yeah i feel like he was in the vernon wells trade yeah i think he got swapped uh jj hardy johnny peralta bronson a row royo whatever his name is uh john lackey uh i don't think these guys will make it to a second year no carlos beltran's the big one and even him seems kind of borderline um carlos delgado is not in
Starting point is 01:24:26 the Hall of Fame, right? That's your bar there. That guy they said was in a Hall of Fame. I could see him getting in Veterans Committee. Same with Fred McGriff. I think they belong in there. Big sluggers. Okay. This band, huge for a few years. Without it, we wouldn't have had the band
Starting point is 01:24:42 Savage Garden, who I realized was listening to the song. Chris Angel's neighbor, the guy from Savage Garden. Really? Yeah. Was it like Darren? Darren. Darren.
Starting point is 01:24:49 Okay, very good. I love those fun facts. Savage Garden, I think, was Australian. This band famously was Swedish. Let's listen. Oh, wait. I knew you. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:02 I thought maybe you were going to go Sign by Ace of Base or something. Oh, that'd be good. Swerve. That would be good. This is the look. I always thought this was like very reminiscent of like a Prince song. Like Prince could...
Starting point is 01:25:16 I guess he did... Like Sign of the Time. Well, I guess Prince did the look also. That's right, yeah. With Sheena Easton. That's a good song. You got the look. She's got the loop.
Starting point is 01:25:25 I think you should get that up there, Mike, after we're done with this. We should preview that Sheena Easton song. Now, this is not the guy from Savage Garden? No. Doesn't that sound exactly like him? Like the chicken ginger? Savage Garden is Australian?
Starting point is 01:25:44 I thought for some reason, I thought they were from like a Scandinavian country. I always thought the guy from Savage Garden was the guy from Roxette. It sounds exactly like him. It's very, very similar. The look in I Want You. I think that was the name of that. Oh, yeah. You're right.
Starting point is 01:25:59 You're right. Darren Hayes. You're right. So they are Australian. You're right. Okay. Wait, Darren Hayes. Wasn't the guy from Men at Work also Darren Hayes. You're right. So they are Australian. You're right. Okay. Wait, Darren Hayes. Wasn't the guy from Men at Work also something Hayes?
Starting point is 01:26:09 And also Australian? Any relation there? John Derringer is a Hayes. I think Colin Hayes. Colin Hayes. Colin Hayes. Not Susan Hayes. Charlie Hayes, I was thinking.
Starting point is 01:26:18 Charlie. Yeah, it's Colin Hayes. Hall of Famer. This song, number one hit in the US is their first single. That's incredible when bands do that. Really, it's like our debut single straight to number one. Totally unknown before. It was the third Swedish
Starting point is 01:26:33 act to have a number one hit. Can I guess? Yeah. Who are the other two? I'm going to guess ABBA. Correct. ABBA with Dancing Queen in 1976. The other one... The sign people. No, these were prior to Roxette. Weren't they prior?
Starting point is 01:26:49 No, I guess not. Okay. I'll give you a clue. This band, you might not know this name. Blue Swede. This is... Yeah. Very good.
Starting point is 01:26:57 Hooked on a Feeling as featured in what? Reservoir Dogs. Reservoir Dogs. Yeah. Super sounds of the 70s. KB. By the way, Paul, Simon, and Edie Burkell still together according to VP
Starting point is 01:27:07 of Sales. So I guess... You know what we're thinking of maybe? Billy Joel and... No, I thought that Paul Simon... We've got to look into that. 1236 stole my thunder here. This song was... I remember there was this Casey
Starting point is 01:27:23 Casey would talk about this. It was, it was like a Minnesota radio station broke this, which was very rare. 1236 is literally telling that story. Yeah. So anyone who's like listening, they'll go in the comment section, but 1236 actually did an interview with a guy who broke Roxette in really worldwide,
Starting point is 01:27:39 but North America. Now that this band, allegedly this was inspired by ZZ Top, the sound of this song, which ZZ Top in the 80s, this was very like electronically. Very dancey rock. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:52 It wasn't like your old ZZ Top. Yeah, not at all. So I can kind of see that. There's electronics in there. Are you talking about ZZ Top? ZZ Top, that's right.
Starting point is 01:28:00 Shout out to Dusty Hill. After Burner and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like Recycler and all that. Sharp Dressed Man. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:06 I could kind of see it. That Leagues video was a big deal to me as a kid. All of it was. That fucking video. I'm like, oh good, the Leagues video. ZZ Top was awesome. They were great. And the guy without the beard was the beard.
Starting point is 01:28:16 The car. He's sleeping back. The car, that red roadster. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They spin their guitars somehow. Yeah. Fuzzy beard. Furry guitars.
Starting point is 01:28:24 The dice in the mirror, yeah. Just one, I don't know if you're going to shout out Ridley Funeral Home, but we lost this woman. Marnie Fredrickson. Yeah, to breast cancer, I think. It's 1236 with some conspiratorial thing. He thinks there might have been some payola in this song. He's like Fox Mulder.
Starting point is 01:28:42 There must have been love, but it's over now. Listen to your heart. That's a good one. There's a song called Sleeping in My Car. What's the jam you wanted me to load up, Stu? Oh, Prince, The Look. Yeah, Sheeny Easton. That's a great song.
Starting point is 01:28:58 It's like an alphabet. We should have an episode someday. You got The Look. We should have an episode someday where we have a battle of the songs with the same name. We literally... Okay, but we did do that. No, but like a battle. I like that idea. You have to vote.
Starting point is 01:29:13 And then they can vote in the live chat. Maybe when you zoom in in December. 1236 says Roxette's career died when their CD was distributed through McDonald's. I can imagine Cam going to put that up. I think it worked for Garth Brooks. It worked for my buddy Phil Glasser
Starting point is 01:29:28 with his American Tail movie as well. Fievel. Shout out to Fievel. And I have a VHS Field of Dreams I got for $6.99 at McDonald's. Good value. Very funny story here. I've told it on the show before,
Starting point is 01:29:39 but my buddy Phil was the voice of Fievel the Mouse, right? Of course, he's been on Toast. Yes. So I think I've told this before, but the real quick version that McDonald's was offering American Tail Fievel the Mouse, right? Of course, he's been on Toast. Yes. So, I think I've told this before, but the real quick version that McDonald's was offering American Tail Fievel Goes West with Happy Meals that you could buy for
Starting point is 01:29:51 $1.99 or whatever it was if you ordered a cheeseburger. About a third of the price of a cup of coffee at Starbucks. He ended up getting a check for like $2 million or something like that from the sales of... That's fucking incredible. Yeah, yeah yeah yeah well especially given like what that movie sorry the backstory that movie it's just like selling hamburgers because i'm so like a pretty heavy backstory
Starting point is 01:30:12 yeah to it so good god bless cash flow checks wow two million bucks something crazy us like out of nowhere like you just got a check in the mailbox like here's a check for two million like once in a while they'll be found money and it might be like $500. Or maybe it's even $1,000 that you weren't banking on, but it came in and you're like, oh, found money. But $2 million? Like, that's a life-changing. We've got 1236 going to town on this rock set. I think he likes the breakfast episode.
Starting point is 01:30:40 A lot of copying and pasting from Wikipedia, I'm guessing, because there's footnotes in here. He's back here soon. First Thursday. No, I think we're pushing it. The first Thursday is a first. This is a good song, though, right? Yeah. I like this song.
Starting point is 01:30:55 She's Australian, too, maybe. No? She needs. I think that's right. Oh, did I do that? Did I do that? Oh, did I do that? Did I do that? Oh, I see. For whatever reason, the way I'm playing this,
Starting point is 01:31:11 it's not a YouTube video, so if I leave the screen... She's from Australia. No need to look it up. All right, well, I'm bringing her down. We've got VPSLs showing the vacation photos of Paul Simon, Edie Burkell, who looks a bit like... I'm not aware of too many things, like Melissa Etheridge. They had hits at the same time. simon edie brickell who looks a bit like um i'm not aware of too many things like melissa etheridge um they had hits at the same time like who's the female lead in water world who's that
Starting point is 01:31:31 apparently she's scottish according to 1236 sorry go ahead yeah uh i know i can think i was gonna say andy mcdowell but no no no no no no water world was a movie that promoted cigarettes well because they couldn't have dirt. But there was a bit of a problem because there was no dirt, right? So how do you grow the tobacco? I wasn't quite sure how they were getting the cigarettes. Well, they were like leftover from the old earth. So it was like stale sex.
Starting point is 01:31:55 They're going to run out. Shout out to Canna Cabana. Okay. Now, I am going to kick out my final jam, one of my favorite songs of all time. So I was so happy when I saw Cam pick this title. Are you guys ready for my final V-Jam? Hell yes. Okay.
Starting point is 01:32:18 Woo! I pulled into Nazareth Was feeling about half past ten. Dabba dabba dum. I just need some place where I can lay my head. Hey mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed? He just grinned and shook my hand.
Starting point is 01:32:42 No one's always saying. Hey! Take a load off's always saying. Hey! Take a load off, Benny. Hey! Take a load for free. Take a load off, Benny. Yeah. And you put the load right on, right on me.
Starting point is 01:33:03 Even the name of this band would have qualified for our The Jam. This is the band. Double whammy. Double whammy. Okay. This song is called The Wait. If you don't know it, you're missing out. Came out in 68.
Starting point is 01:33:14 No relation to John Wait or Doug Wait. Yeah, Doug Wait from the Oilers. I remember him. Okay. So this is from Music from Big Pink, which was the debut album by the band. Everyone in this band is Canadian except the singer of this song, who is the drummer. Shout out to Sammy Cohen.
Starting point is 01:33:32 He's not Canadian? No, he's from Arkansas. In fact, here's the connection. So he's from Arkansas. Ronnie Hawkins, not our Ronnie Hawkins, okay, the romping Ronnie Hawkins. He's from Arkansas. Bill Clinton's from Arkansas, too. There's all Ronnie Hawkins. He's from Arkansas. Bill Clinton's from Arkansas too. There's all your Arkansas people.
Starting point is 01:33:48 So the band... Is Garth Hudson? No, he's Canadian. They're all Canadian except for Levon Helm. Garth Butcher. You know this, right? But the band was the Hawks and they were Ronnie Hawkins' backup band.
Starting point is 01:34:04 And then when Bob Dylan wanted to go electric he's like I want your band Ronnie Hawkins I'm gonna go electric which was a big
Starting point is 01:34:12 fucking big deal very Linda Ronstadt the Eagles kind of story here so he's like he takes the Hawks from Ronnie Hawkins and they're now
Starting point is 01:34:19 Bob Dylan's band because he went electric one of the worst bands in terms of SEO hard to get in from them like stars and one of the worst bands in terms of SEO hard to get in right stars and then of course they go write the music from Big Pink and this fucking song which I think is one of the greatest and this is
Starting point is 01:34:34 very subjective as all jams are but one of the greatest songs of all time the weight by the band I absolutely adore it so I'm gonna just shout him out real quick done with that leave on helm Helm, you know, drummer. He also sings and he's the Arkansas guy. But then Rick Danko. There's not going to be a lot of shouts out to Ridley Funeral Home here.
Starting point is 01:34:52 But Rick Danko, right? He's in there. Levon's gone now. Rick's gone now. Okay. Richard Manuel. He was doing the Hammond Organ. He's gone.
Starting point is 01:35:00 Yeah. He was in Tane. Yes. He's one of the names I added in. Or sorry. Rosie Gray Teo added in. Careful, you're going to dox yourself here. Garth Hudson, who's still with us, right? He's still alive.
Starting point is 01:35:12 Garth Hudson. Played with the Northern Pikes later. On piano. And of course, Robbie Robertson, who's very active out there telling the story. And you can... I keep thinking I can actually get Robbie Robertson. BP of Sales' dad played drums for the Hawks in...
Starting point is 01:35:25 Yeah, that's no joke. It's in Port Dover. Port Dover. Wow. That's where all the motorcycle guys are. That's right. Port Dover on Friday the 13th. Love it.
Starting point is 01:35:34 Okay, so a couple of quick things here. I hate to bring it down, but I'm going to bring it down. I love Girl Talk. Do you know what that means, Cameron Gordon? Of course, yeah. I know. The board game right so girl talk beverly cleary book greg gillis is that his name i want to say yes so girl talk
Starting point is 01:35:52 he's got a few albums that i still spin on the reg and uh this is one of my favorite girl talk songs i just cut out like less than a minute of those girl talk okay i cut out less than a minute because now i've been rewired my brain gets rewired so when i hear smells like teen spirit for example i now hear salt and pepper with it like because i put it in the girl talk song so now when i hear the weight which was one of my favorite songs i now hear this ready one and a quarter speed, I think. Pitched up like Kanye style. Shout out to DJ Lupin. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:36:52 I will say the original, much like Fairy Tale of New York, a great original that people should not try to cover. I just find covers of The Wait so cringe. I feel like we've seen so many Canada All-Star jams singing The Wait at the end of concerts and it's never good in my opinion. Just like Leave It. Is there a different version?
Starting point is 01:37:12 Well, here. This is where I'm going. So when I listen to The Wait, I actually usually listen to this version. This is from The Last Waltz. Not The Last Pogo. That was at Horseshoe Tavern. Shout out to the Garys. The Last Waltz, my friend.
Starting point is 01:37:31 A 1976 film directed by anyone? Scorsese? Martin Scorsese. Absolutely. His birthday was the same day as Stu Stones. And he's completely sitting on the SCTV dock. It's not going to see the light of day. Must not be good.
Starting point is 01:37:44 I don't know. I haven't seen it. Well, why wouldn't he put it out? If he liked it, he would put it out. Set it free. Let us be the judge.
Starting point is 01:37:51 Set it free. So why am I playing it? Okay, this is the Staple Singers. Right. And they came in. So here's a bit of Mavis Staple.
Starting point is 01:37:59 Sorry, we lost Mavis recently, man. She's still with us. She's still here. I love Mavis Staple. And this is her. I'll give it a moment and then I'll play
Starting point is 01:38:06 another little cover and then we'll get out. No rush. He keeps giving me the side eye over there. She's tapping his wand. She's tapping his wand. Hard out.
Starting point is 01:38:20 Fuck. Okay. So that's Mavis Staple. That's the Staple Singers. I love it when Pops in there too. So I'm just going
Starting point is 01:38:28 to give a little taste of... It's like over 40 years ago. It sounds great. Just a little bit because I mean you mentioned all these
Starting point is 01:38:36 cringy covers and I just thought I'd shout out somebody who passed away the day Molly Johnson visited me. I pulled into Nazareth.
Starting point is 01:38:43 I was feeling bad I had passed out. I just need some place Molly Johnson visited me. This is a pretty cool interpretation of him. This is not bad. I'm okay with this. Much better than the Girl Talk version, no offense. You're missing out, Stu. You're missing out.
Starting point is 01:39:19 Cam Gordon, Real Talk. What do you think of the Girl Talk stuff? I like Girl Talk in general. I'm into it. I have to be in the mood, but when I'm into it, I'm really into it. Good workout music, or do you think of the Girl Talk stuff? I like Girl Talk in general. I'm into it. I have to be in the mood, but when I'm into it, I'm really into it. Good workout music or if you're on the bike or something.
Starting point is 01:39:32 Feed the animals. Yeah, Girl Talk's great. Throw it on at a party and you're having a great time. This artist is Aretha Franklin. I've never heard of her. Who is she? You can ask Molly about it. One of Molly's heroes.
Starting point is 01:39:46 Of course. Molly's heroes. King Curtis. King Curtis Ikea. Checking in on that. Apparently she also covers Simon and Garfunkel on the same album. Candidate Kev just coming. Candidate Kev versus 1236 today. He brings the heat.
Starting point is 01:40:00 For the fun facts. They both smoke weed together. This mysterious Hey Ref claims Robbie Robertson is my wife's first cousin. Get Rob. That's not true. Hey, Ref. Who are you? How are you, Hey Ref?
Starting point is 01:40:13 Can you please put in the feelers and see if Robbie Robertson... If you're still hearing us in the chat room, just like a roll call, please press one in the chat so we can shout you out. This is the shout out time. Cable Guy Jeff asking us to play The Joker by Steve Miller Band. Oh, it was on my short list. Which could have been played. The Joker was on my short list.
Starting point is 01:40:32 Good family tree for that, for The Joker, which is a great song. First of all, we were talking about the Scholastic Book Fair. Yeah, sure were. I would say that the Columbia House catalog is probably second to the Scholastic Book Fair. The little stickers. And I would say that the Columbia House catalog is probably second to the Scholastic Book Fair the little stickers
Starting point is 01:40:46 and I would say that Bob Marley Legend and Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits are probably two of the best selling albums you had that dialed up I'm ready to go but I loved Steve Miller's Greatest Hits so Steve Miller's guitar player a gentleman by the name of Boz Skaggs
Starting point is 01:41:03 wow ends up going out on his own I kicked him out and the name of Boz Skaggs. Wow. I know. Ends up going out on his own. I kicked him out. And then who is Boz Skaggs' band? A little outfit known as Toto. Oh, Toto. I kicked out Boz Skaggs on the Yacht Rock episode of Pandemic Fridays.
Starting point is 01:41:17 Lido Shuck. Yeah. That's one of the lowdown. Yeah, the lowdown. I kicked out the lowdown. Okay. Okay, so we got some shoutouts here. Okay, good shit. Okay, Stu, the floor got some shout-outs here. Okay, good shit.
Starting point is 01:41:26 Okay, Stu, the floor is yours, brother. You gotta take us home. Shout-out VPSL. Shout-out Andy. Shout-out Leslieville. Shout-out HeyRap. Shout-out Moose Grumpy. I like the Homer Simpsons version of this song, too, as I recall.
Starting point is 01:41:42 The Eagles' greatest hits. Steve Miller's greatest hits. I don't know. I like Steve Miller's. I hits Steve Miller's greatest hits I don't know I like Steve Miller's I like Steve Miller's Because I think more teenagers In the 80s and 90s Bought the Steve Miller's
Starting point is 01:41:51 Greatest hits album For some reason At least a Thor and Lee Steve Miller and Bob Seger Mixed up like for years The Rock would have been Qualified for this The Rock?
Starting point is 01:42:01 Funny that Like a Rock Like a Rock I'm thinking of a certain former CFL player. Did anyone here watch the Grey Cup?
Starting point is 01:42:08 I saw the end of it. I actually watched a bit of it. I watched most of the second half. Toronto Argonauts. Champions. You know,
Starting point is 01:42:15 they've won their last seven appearances in the Grey Cup. There's only six teams. There's eight, I think. Eight or nine. I think there's nine.
Starting point is 01:42:23 All right, we're going to end this show with a bang. You know, if you're going to just come to, if you're, if this episode is going to come to the end, we may as well do it properly.
Starting point is 01:42:32 Right. Am I right? Or am I right? All right. All right. It's true. You are correct. The end is here.
Starting point is 01:42:40 Cam, what's this song called? Uh, this is the end or just the end. Shout out to Apocalypse Now. Yes. Very ominous. Because every time I hear it,
Starting point is 01:42:50 I just picture that scene there. I got lots to say about this song. Go for it. I didn't want to... It's 12 minutes long and Cam's got a timeline. We're going to have to cut it off at some point.
Starting point is 01:43:04 Oh, it is 12 minutes long. Way to go. The we're going to have to cut it off at some point. Oh it is 12 minutes long. Way to go. The end is an epic song guys by a group that some people don't like. There you go.
Starting point is 01:43:12 Some people think they're hacky. The Tea Party like them. Clearly. The Doors another the band. There you go.
Starting point is 01:43:21 The The. Right. Jim Morrison not to be confused with John Morrison who will be appearing at the Megan Boys wrestling event
Starting point is 01:43:28 tomorrow night. This is the end. My beautiful friend. There was a baseball player, Jim Morrison. He was like the last guy on the 84 Tigers. And he had like
Starting point is 01:43:40 funny glasses. Yes, he did. Yeah, famous baseball. Some good baseball cards for sure. That was a great team that 84 Tigers. Holy fuck.
Starting point is 01:43:46 They started the season like 45 and 5 or something. I love fucking Trammell. Lou Whitaker, sweet Lou. Jim Morrison claims the lyrics are about a breakup with an old girlfriend he had,
Starting point is 01:43:55 but it took like several performances at the Whiskey A Go-Go, which ironically was the debut venue for the Stone Movement, if you ever watched that Cable Guy Jeff movie.
Starting point is 01:44:05 Wow. So I've played that stage many times, but The Doors played it also many times, a lot more successful than I was. And they came up with this song, The End, from Apocalypse Now. Now, here's some fucked up shit about this song. Because according to other people within the group, and eventually Jim Morrison,
Starting point is 01:44:30 you know, there's a line in this song that we're probably not going to get to, because the song's so long, but where he says, I want to fuck you, and he's referring to his mother. Apparently, Jim Morrison was very obsessed with Oedipus Rex. Really? And other bandmates claimed that he had his own sort of Oedipus Rex issue in his own life. And that's what this song is, is a way for him to sort of get it off his chest. Okay.
Starting point is 01:45:01 So maybe Jim liked his mom. You know, that's a very popular subgenre on browsers these days. You know, stepmom. I'll take your word for it. I will say I have been to this guy's gravesite in Paris. I visited. Okay. Well, it's his lyrics that are in here, and I didn't make this up, Kim. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:45:21 He says it in the song. Sure. So, yeah, this is also one of the last songs performed at their last concert on December the 12th, 1970. And then what happened? I think he took a bath and never came back. How old was he? Probably 27. He was 27.
Starting point is 01:45:42 He's in that club. We've talked about this before the band the doors of the 21st century were they reunited oh the cult guy yeah with the that guy ray ray manzaic who's the keyboardist eric yeah yeah he was all over the scene i'm not like a fan of that i i get him and john sebastian mix up but ray manzaic just seemed like a oh he did the welcome back thing seemed kind of like a jerk. I think I've heard a little bit of that.
Starting point is 01:46:08 I'm sure he's a big fan. Can I shout out, I know this is Stu's song and he's going to give some more fun facts, but I just want to say that, yes, Apocalypse Now is a great film.
Starting point is 01:46:15 I really liked it. Lawrence Fishburne is like 15 years old in that thing. It's unbelievable. But I want to shout out the documentary Hearts of Darkness,
Starting point is 01:46:23 a filmmaker's apocalypse, which is better than Apocalypse Now. And it's just the whole documentary about the filming of the thing with Martin Sheen and his heart attack and Francis Ford Coppola. And it's unbelievable. What a cluster. And Marlon Brando, like losing his mind and stuff. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:39 He comes out of shape. Yeah. It's such a... Who wrote Heart of Darkness? Joseph Conrad? Yes. That's correct. Crazy. It's such a... Who wrote Heart of Darkness? Joseph Conrad? Yes. That's correct. That's great.
Starting point is 01:46:47 Crazy. Crazy times. The whore. Val Kilmer. The whore. Val Kilmer? Well, just the doors. He played Jim Horton.
Starting point is 01:46:56 He was in Maverick, but he couldn't speak. What was that movie he did with Marlon? I Love Dr. Monroe. Oh. Moreau? With Marlon Brando. Yeah like it's one of his last films and uh the guy who's married to kerry bradshaw who the fuck is that guy matthew broderick that's how i call him he was in that movie isn't he i don't know i never saw it i know i don't see
Starting point is 01:47:16 movies i think i've seen apocalypse now though i feel like it was i'm not maybe it's a different movie i'm thinking of all right uh let's get right. Let's get serious for a minute. This song is called The End, but it's not the best song called The End. Oh. Okay. Okay. I submit that this is the best song called The End. Oh yeah Oh yeah Alright Are you gonna be in my dream
Starting point is 01:47:53 Tonight Steve Lukather's boy I think that's his only drum solo In the history of the Beatles Shout out to Richard Starkey what an iconic riff this is
Starting point is 01:48:13 it's like Sloan's whole career like right here yeah ripping off this the lines you amend yeah so there's some fun
Starting point is 01:48:21 facts about this song you mentioned that Ringo's solo but all of them have a guitar solo in a row here. So here's the first Beatle. This is like the George, right? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:48:35 I only know which one is clearly John. This is probably Paul. So each of them gets a turn to solo. That's cool. And I think the last one's John. It's kind of cool, right? Yeah. Wow, what a jam.
Starting point is 01:49:28 Now, this is the last song that was ever recorded by all four of the Beatles. Fitting that it is called The End. Perfect. Wow. The love you take is equal to the love you make. Wow. There you go. I get emotional and choked up thinking about it.
Starting point is 01:49:47 Now, it's almost strange to hear it on its own because it's part of that medleyley right they uh glue those three songs together right carry that weight what are the songs carry that weight good morning good morning uh what else is in what else would you say is in the uh her majesty next anyways uh yeah i know fucking great song. Two words. First word, the. Perfect. It fits. It fits. Okay, quick check. Quick time check here before we go.
Starting point is 01:50:10 Okay, good. We actually timed this pretty damn fucking perfect. But any words on your way out. The End. Great way to conclude our show today. I was going to say, the first time I ever kicked out the jams, the last song was also called The End by Best Coast.
Starting point is 01:50:21 It's a very popular name for a song, but I think those... Oh, Golden Slumbers. I just want to say it because it was killing me. It's Golden Slumbers, then Carry That Weight, and then it's the end, and they're all glued together. Big medley. Shout out to everybody. I want to say
Starting point is 01:50:33 don't forget to check out Vandits when it comes out December 1st because I won't be here to promote it. And if I don't see you guys, Merry Christmas. On that note, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, whatever you celebrate. Happy everything, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, whatever you celebrate. Happy everything. Happy New Year. And when I see you guys next,
Starting point is 01:50:49 it's probably going to be 2023. Is Jan Arden coming on Toronto Mike? Not the way you behave, so probably not. I had it set up with your PR person. I guess, you know, I don't know. Leave her out of it. I used to work with her. Well, she wrote me and said, yeah, let's get her on at the end of November. I don't think it's... And then I guess, you know, I don't know. Leave her out of it. I used to work with her. Okay. Well, she wrote me and said, yeah, let's get her on at the end of November.
Starting point is 01:51:07 I don't think it's... And then I tweeted. You know the story. I know the story. I heard it all. But I mean, I just, you know, I don't want to make it sound like I made it up. You didn't make it up. Everyone's saying great show.
Starting point is 01:51:18 Let's get into this here. Let's nail the dismount here. Shout out to Jan Arden. Yeah. Don't be insensitive. And that. And that. I haven't had a voice since Rusty.
Starting point is 01:51:34 There you go. You sound like Ken right now. You know what? I yelled a lot and I didn't have a voice after that and it hasn't come back. It was a hell of a time. I loved it. Loved it. Loved it.
