Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey Rosie, how you doing? I'm good. Hey Mike, I never get sick of this song. It's so good. Well, we have a special surprise for all fans of this song. But we'll save that for a little bit later in the podcast. It's good. Did you find the studio okay today? I actually almost called you because I did the exact same thing that I did last week.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Is that true? The Sherway Gardens detour? I swear to God, I completely blanked out, missed Horner, and was at the East Mall. Did a ridiculous U-turn because I didn't want to be late. I refused to be late. That's hilarious that you did it twice. Yeah, I did the exact same thing. I just tuned out.
Starting point is 00:01:02 But I was on time. I need you to focus. And you were all late. same thing. I just tuned out, but I was on time. I need you to focus. We were waiting for turd pants to wrap up in the Humble and Fred studios. It was cool. They were streaming right out. What's that? Are you getting my, uh, cause I have a, I don't know. I have a throat. My voice left me on Saturday night and it's slowly coming back. It's catching. Is it that contagious? Alright, now this, Rosie,
Starting point is 00:01:30 is episode 13. I want to play something for you. This will take you back 10 years ago this year. You ready? Yep. Thomas gave it to Sandin. They go up and down. Sandin scores!
Starting point is 00:01:45 That's Sundin. I miss him so much. That was the great Bob Cole calling an overtime winner by Matt Sundin, and that was against the Senators back in 2002. It's like another lifetime. It's just, I can't believe it. It just feels like that was so long ago.
Starting point is 00:02:11 And that's number 13 for Matt Sundin. That's a no-brainer. He was a fantastic Maple Leaf who I think was underappreciated because you had these great guys my age always talk about the great Leaf captains. Wendell Clark, number 17 from Kelvington, Saskatchewan, or Dougie Gilmore, number 93 from Kingston, Ontario.
Starting point is 00:02:32 And then you had this classy gentleman, number 13 from Stockholm, Sweden, Matt Sundin. I don't think we appreciated him as much because of his lack of Canadian I don't know. It was just all so sad. And then when he went to Vancouver Rosie, it broke my heart. You know why? I know. It broke a lot of hearts. He wouldn't waive his no trade because he didn't believe in joining another team
Starting point is 00:02:58 mid-season. He wouldn't waive that no trade, which would have been good for the Leafs. We could have got something for our future. What he ended up doing was he ended up joining the Canucks mid-season. And he retired a Canuck. It was just such a contradiction. It really hurt me. Especially because he was with us for so long.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And I think Torontonians loved him. He was great. He was amazing. It's so sad how it all ended. He recently became a father. I think he's very happy. But I feel he should have stayed. He should have retired and leave, right?
Starting point is 00:03:30 He should have stayed here. Absolutely. Of course. There's no Winter Classic. I was so looking forward to that. It's not going to happen. I don't think it's going to happen this year. Speaking of, they canceled the Winter Classic, like you mentioned.
Starting point is 00:03:40 But they're also, of course, already canceled the Hall of Fame game. Matt Sundin, since we're not quite done with Matt, this is the year he's entering the Hall of Fame. So it would be really cool. We would have had a ceremony for Matt at the ACC before the Hall of Fame game. No, not anymore. Gone. But are you managing without your hockey?
Starting point is 00:04:02 Yeah, and in a moment I'm going to try something new. I'm going to update everybody on something I've been focusing on with all this extra bandwidth I have that I don't have a hockey team to follow. So without a doubt, I'll be updating everybody. But first, a couple of shout-outs. I want to give a shout-out to Pete McPhedron from Core Fusion. Pete's been really great donating web space to the Humble and Fred project
Starting point is 00:04:30 and I piggybacked on top of this so Pete's listening I'm actually going to throw this mp3 on your web space maybe we can work out something more long term but I wanted to say hi to Pete regardless and a long time commenter his name he often writes as Twins from Bolton,
Starting point is 00:04:50 and I've been seeing that name commenting on the TorontoMike.com blog, I would say in easy like seven years or so. It's been a long time. Yeah, he does contribute quite a bit. Just been there so long, the site wouldn't be the same without him, so I want to say hi to twins from Bolton. Hey to the whole gang. I was on your site earlier and today being the election, the American election,
Starting point is 00:05:14 and there was lots of deliberation going on on who people think are going to win, Obama or Romney. There's an election today, Rose? I had no idea. By the time they hear this, of course, we will know who won, maybe. But as we record on this Tuesday evening, we don't know. But let me be the first.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Hold on. Late breaking news, Rosie. That was very, very impressive. That was mike's first effect hey no i made i had to make that opening theme go and then i also did this matt sundin click clip so that's my third okay uh but that was my ground that was my uh announcement horn to tell everybody i'm calling it i'm the first to call it i'm calling it before cnn before msnbc and fox news i'm calling it. I'm the first to call it. I'm calling it before CNN, before MSNBC and Fox News. I'm calling it before CBS.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Barack Obama has been reelected as President of the United States of America. Great. Good job, Barack. Put your effect on again. No, I think once is quite enough, Rosie. Well, I don't know. I was on the Wall Street Journal. What do you mean you don't know?
Starting point is 00:06:28 I just called it. Is it too early? The Wall Street Journal, their paywall is down for Election Day, so you can read all the stuff on their site for free. And I was on there poking around, and they had some predictions by some of the people on their editorial board. And a lot of them, it was interesting, a lot of them thought that it would be Romney by a very, very small margin just because an incumbent, you know, they felt an incumbent
Starting point is 00:06:54 president should be able to hit more than 50% in the polls. I just thought that was interesting. From what I understand, the popular vote is very close, but the electoral college vote, it's I think what last thing I trusted was 75 percent chance of Obama winning. Totally. But regardless, it's been called. So by the time you hear this, you already know that Obama has back to back. I think it's what the T-shirts will say.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Back to back. Barack Obama. It's very exciting. Very interesting. Rose, I'm upset because I keep seeing these ads for this new pizza I think it's Pizza Hut and they have hot dogs in the crust I don't know if you've seen these ads I love hot dogs
Starting point is 00:07:35 that's so funny I was just talking to you my friend today we were talking about how good hot dogs and macaroni and cheese are okay both are wonderful I love hot dogs you love hot dogs what do you think of pizza. Okay, both are wonderful. I love hot dogs. You love hot dogs. What do you think of pizza? I love pizza. I love pizza too. I get a pizza every day. And I get hot dogs every day if I weren't such a
Starting point is 00:07:51 fit specimen. But here's my problem, Rose. Hot dogs are great, but they're awful for you. And pizza's great, but it's awful for you. Maybe a little less so, but still not too good. The good pizza's pretty bad for you, I think. My question is, it's so unnecessary.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Why are we combining these two wonderfully bad-for-you foods when you don't need more than one? Keep them two separate meals. No, it's more than unnecessary. It's disgusting. It's egregious. But it's a gimmick, and everyone's totally going to buy it because that's what Pizza Hut does with their stuffed crust, their cheese stuffed in, which is disgusting.
Starting point is 00:08:26 I think they even had bacon in the crust or maybe they didn't. Maybe I just made that up. Maybe I want that. The Pizza Hut, if you're listening, put your bacon in the crust. And send Rosie a free pizza bite next Tuesday. But I think I'm disgusting. Would you try it? Because I don't even want to try it.
Starting point is 00:08:42 No, I absolutely would try it. I would try it. Yes, definitely. I thought we'd have agreement there. It's just an unnecessary... Maybe we've been not having a lot of agreement. I know, because somebody said we agreed too much, and I don't think we've agreed since.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Well, no one said that to me. Someone said that to you, and ever since then, you just fight with me all the time. It's R-G. No, it's R-G. No, it's R-G. It's R-G. Like R-G. I can't believe... Go back to the old podcast it's rg i thought i had this straight
Starting point is 00:09:08 no it's rg like initials of a name okay well it's genuine rg the genuine yeah and it's irvine okay mom is um driving me crazy the end my mom has a awful rogers internet plan that caps her out at ready for this two gigabytes a month of throughput so how much internet surfing would that yeah so she only uses facebook and gmail and she still hits the cap. That's what, that's insane. Yeah. So first of all, if my wonderful son's over, he gets warning. Well,
Starting point is 00:09:50 first of all, it's a free country. She's welcome to, I get three, I get 300 gigabytes. Okay. She's, she's more than welcome to spend an extra five bucks a month and get a
Starting point is 00:09:58 reasonable cap. But the two gigs is hilarious because my son knows at 10 years old, he knows when he's over there, grandma's got two gigs i can't go crazy with youtube because i'll use up all the gigs like everything she's always about the gigabytes the gig by i go mom once i go mom if my own mom doesn't listen to my podcast like what's the point because my brother played the first two episodes and she hadn't heard any since and we were on like episode 12 and then she's like mike my gigabytes and i'm like this
Starting point is 00:10:23 probably uses up a lot of no it's No, it's like a mega minute. But she doesn't have that many. No. And I'm like, okay, mom, let me tell you this way. Two gigabytes is like 2,000 megabytes. My podcast might be 30 megabytes. So I give her like some frame of reference or whatever. She's like, oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I thought it might be more. So I think she's caught up a bit. But she's so afraid to do anything but read emails and do Facebook because of her two gigabytes. How does email count? Everything does. Every byte that comes up and down counts. Every downloaded byte. You can download.
Starting point is 00:10:52 I like how you had to convince your mom to get more gigabytes to listen to your podcast. Well, no, she didn't. I can't get her to get more gigabytes. My phone, my shitty phone has six gig cap on it. Like I got three times as much throughput on my my smartphone row has ever heard of a smartphone i'm not gonna be too hard on your mom because i know how it feels when you have perhaps technology that's less smart than everyone else is to have to have them sort of make make make fun of you it's not it's not very nice no it's not all week i'm gonna my friends
Starting point is 00:11:23 humble and fred don't listen So I'm safe It's like a safe zone to say this But all week they've been playing this song It's a cover song They've been playing it And every time they play it They talk about It sounds like early green day
Starting point is 00:11:39 They discuss the song That they like it But they never ever mention That it's actually by Weezer. I actually don't think they know it's a cover. So here is the original. Rose, do you remember El Scorcho from Pinkerton? Really? Oh my goodness. What a big hit. I don't reallycho from Pinkerton? Really? Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:12:06 What a big hit. I don't really like this. Okay. Really? No. Oh, I love this song. Really? No.
Starting point is 00:12:12 I'm so disappointed. Why don't you like it? I just don't. I don't know how you don't know it. You know, you just don't feel it. I don't feel it. So early to make that judgment. I know.
Starting point is 00:12:22 I judge songs really early. Wow. Anyway, this is the song El Scorcho by Weezer. Oh, it's a great tune. I love this song. Is it growing on you yet? I don't know. Maybe if I listen to it a few more times. Not quite yet.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Regardless, that was just an excuse to use my soundboard. I was going to say, I think Mike is really just trying to show us how we can use the special effects. That doesn't sound like early Green Day. That is early Weezer. Okay. And you mentioned earlier, without the Leafs, what am I doing with my time? Well, this brings me to a quick little segment I'd like to introduce, Rosie. I'm excited.
Starting point is 00:13:09 They're playing basketball. We love that basketball. They're playing basketball. So this here is a little Curtis blow to introduce the fact that I watched a 2.5 of the three Raptor games that have been played so far this season. And first game, which was the day a trick or treating day, Halloween,
Starting point is 00:13:33 I guess that's what they call that, right? Halloween, the trick or treating day. So I missed the first half, but we coughed up, we coughed it up in the fourth quarter. Ridiculous cough up.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Then I watched the game in Brooklyn, the first ever game in Brooklyn. And I don't know if you caught it, but they have a horrible mascot, this Brooklyn Knight. He's not cuddly or soft or plushy. The kids like Carlton the Bear so much. They love Duke the Dog at the Marley games. And they love the Raptor. And even Jason from Jason.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Not the Halloween Jason. Why is it that when you say Jason, that's exactly what I think of? Because I dress as him every Halloween. I dress as Jason. His mask was scary. You would have been scared if I saw you in the dark. Oh, that was the idea. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:14:15 And the kids in the neighborhood are always like, you were that last year. Like, I'm going to be this every year until I die. So get used to it. But regardless, okay, so we lost that game against Brooklyn. Then we had a pretty good win. So I just want to say I really like what I've seen from Kyle Lowry so far, the new point guard. Excellent.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Three games is not a very good sample size, but he's been fantastic. I still don't like Andrea Bargnani. I never liked him. No? I know he's Italian. I like him because he's so tall and crazy. And he's Italian and handsome. He's cute.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Do real Italians eat Prego pasta sauce? No, right? Like, that's false advertising. Everybody has their moments. Everyone has their moments when you haven't made your sauce from scratch. The desperate moment you grab the ragu off the shell. You open the ragu, yeah. I don't like how he plays.
Starting point is 00:15:02 I think we keep thinking he'll morph into Dirk Nowitzki at some point and I'm going to say it's not going to happen. Well, I think it is true that he certainly didn't, I think, live up to the... He's 27 now. I think he is what he is now.
Starting point is 00:15:14 He's 27. Yeah, no. But I do like him. But I think you're right. He drives me crazy. I would like to... He was the first overall pick, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:21 just to remind you. And Landry Fields, who we made an offer from the Knicks. We took him. I think they were happy to get rid of him. So far, I'm disappointed. I know it's early, but I want him to be successful because Landry Fields and I share the same birthday.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And I don't think that means much to anybody, but it means a lot to me. So I hope he bounces back. So basketball, it's filling the void. Yeah, that's filling the void. I didn't watch too much last year, but I find I have that. Even with the kids we watched it on uh sunday night we watched it and it's like a family thing because there's no hockey night in canada so yeah it's a it's a
Starting point is 00:15:55 big gap to fill did you notice rosie to your left there's a bearded gentleman i did he's awesome that's where mike wickson used to sit Mike Wixon, I gave him a pink slip. He was a shoot out the door. You know, he acts like he owns the place, so it's time to get rid of him. But Bish, Bish is going to help man the board here so I don't mess it up for Humble and Fred. You're doing a great job, Bishy.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Thanks, guys. Great to be here. I love your beard and I love your wolf shirt. He got us all sorted out when the show got started. There was a few technical difficulties. There was like a plug and a cord. And there were like four guys trying to stick a plug in a hole and it wasn't working. Yeah, that's never good. It's never good.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Rose, you didn't like that El Escort Show by Weezer, one of my favorites. But that's regarded. I'm going to play another song. I need your honest opinion on this, okay? I mean, I'm not going to lie and tell you I liked it. No, I don't want. Don't ever lie to me. Look me in the eyes.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Promise me you'll never lie to me. I'm looking you in the eyes. I will never lie to you. Okay, I want you to tell me what you think of this song, okay? All right. I like it better already. I'm going to give it a few seconds to let it simmer. I know you judge quickly, but...
Starting point is 00:17:11 I love it. Is that true? Because you promised me you'd never lie to me. I love it. I love it, I love it, I love it. It's so cool. Would this make your iPod? Well, I was just about to say, for me, because I still make CDs for my car.
Starting point is 00:17:29 What? This is a whole separate topic. I'm taking notes. I know. It really is. I do still make CDs for my car. So for me, if it makes the cut from my iTunes CD, my iTunes library to the CD burner for my car, this totally would.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Your Weezer song, not so much. Wow. Okay. I'm not going to have this argument because this is robots wearing sunglasses. The song's called 30 Rock, and it is the latest single from Toronto's Ill Vibe. I'd like to welcome Ill Vibe to the Toronto Mic'd podcast. What's up, Mike? What's up, Mike?
Starting point is 00:18:04 That sounds familiar. Do that again. I don't remember how I say it in the theme song, but yeah, it's good to be here, man. Hey, thanks for coming. Yeah, you mentioned it. You are the man responsible for the Toronto Mic'd theme song. You know what? You reached out and we talked about that and you'd already been really supportive of Blunts
Starting point is 00:18:23 and Roses and some of my releases in the past. And I wanted to get into the podcast world myself, which we could talk about in a bit if you want. Yeah, of course. Yeah, I thought what a great opportunity. I listen to podcasts all the time, so it'd be cool to have my music involved with one. Well, okay. So do you mind stepping me through the process? So you're going to make a theme song for Toronto Mike's podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:45 So I know you asked me some questions about the podcast and I said like it's 30 minutes a week or whatever I told you. And then I guess you wrote, so what happens next? You lay down the vibe or? First I get a little bit intoxicated
Starting point is 00:18:57 and then I play a beat. This beat is actually made by a guy named VK who lives in Bristol, England. And he's an amazing producer and I had a couple of beats. This is like pop-up video. I'm a beat. This beat is actually made by a guy named VK who lives in Bristol, England. And he's an amazing producer, and I had a couple of beats. This is like pop-up video. I'm loving this. So while this song plays, tell me all the little things. So I had a couple of beats, and so I thought this one kind of had it.
Starting point is 00:19:14 I figured you're not too gangster, so I'll go with something. I'm a little gangster. You're a little bit. I saw you stab a guy in the parking lot, but besides that, not as gangster. So I figured I'd go with something kind of happy. Yeah, it's fun. And I just wrote it up and recorded it real quick something kind of happy. Yeah, it's fun. And I just wrote it up and recorded real quick out of my home studio.
Starting point is 00:19:28 And it's cool. It was also really cool to get to see some of the feedback from your fans who obviously don't know me at all or listen to hip hop that much. Well, keep in mind, there are going to be, there's a segment of the Toronto Mike fan base that just hates all things rap. Douchebags, all of them.
Starting point is 00:19:42 All of them. That's you, Blind Dave, that's you. He calls you a douchebag. Hi them all of them that's you blind dave that's you he called you a douchebag that's right i loved it when when you when mike put it on his uh site for everyone to check it out yeah it was sample it it was um yeah i was at my desk in my home office and my husband loves hip-hop and he was he was he was he was sort of like not paying attention but i clicked it i i played it and i was like. And I was like, this is great.
Starting point is 00:20:06 He's like, what is that? I'm like, it's the Toronto, right? I dig it. I'm like, it's the Toronto,
Starting point is 00:20:10 my, my theme song. And we, we just let it play like for a really long time. Is it on your iPod Rose? It was really, really, really good.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Is it burned on your CDR? Did you make a Maxell cassette tape? Rosie, 1997 called. They want their blank CDs back. I think I'm the only person left that makes CDs. I can't believe it. Like, every week, you never cease to amaze me.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I can't believe you're recording your music onto blank CDs. Why? Because my car has this. My car is like a 2006 Equinox, and it has a CD player. And I can't bear the radio. We have satellite radio in our other car. That's fair. So when I'm in the other car, we have satellite radio. That's all good. But in my car, I've got the CD player and I can't bear the radio. We have satellite radio in our other car. That's fair. So when I'm in the other car
Starting point is 00:20:46 we have satellite radio. That's all good. But in my car I've got the CD player. When you eventually get a smartphone your life's going to change and you're going to have
Starting point is 00:20:53 a lot of left over CDs. But she can't hear, she doesn't have it Bluetooth enabled. I do have Bluetooth though. What? I do. You mean you're burning CDs
Starting point is 00:21:01 when you're Bluetooth enabled? You know what, let's not get into my phone again because it's really like it's not get into my phone again. Because it's really like it's draining. It's just draining. But back to Ill Vibe. So Ill Vibe.
Starting point is 00:21:11 That's really cool that you did that. Because I dig your theme song. And all rights reserved, right? Like I can play this without having to pay you any royalties. No, it's all you, man. Yes, that's what I was looking for. As long as when you get super famous, I can come on your show and max out your fame, then we're good. Listen, this is episode 13, okay?
Starting point is 00:21:29 I am on my way. Lucky 13. You're on lucky 13. It's good. I'm on my way. So tell me about Rob, Rob, tell me about Roberts wearing sunglasses. Tell me about robots wearing sunglasses. That's the clip we played.
Starting point is 00:21:41 It was 30 Rock. Tell me about that project. That's my new group, me and a guy named Jufre. We heard a little bit of him in that track there. Me and Jufre, he's an MC out of Montreal and Halifax. He now lives in Toronto with me. Not with me, but he lives here in Toronto, the same city as me. And so it's a new group.
Starting point is 00:21:57 It's kind of a hip hop with kind of an electric-y edge. And we have our second single is called Douchebags. There's a bit of like a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor to a lot of the songs. That's my new theme song. Yeah exactly all your fans will really love it. There was a conversation going on my side about the term douchebag. But yeah so it's kind of like a cool different take on music some sense of humor you know incorporated and we're in the middle of our tour to kick it off and it's been a lot of fun and we just played in Kincardine of all places and we're in the middle of our tour to kick it off and it's been a lot of fun and we just played in Kincardine of all places and we're rocking out of the Velvet Underground this Friday night, so it should be fun.
Starting point is 00:22:30 That's cool. So before we even progress, tell me if somebody wants to catch you in concert or something or wants to hook up with you, what's your website? illvibemusic.com You can find out all my stuff's there. Now Ill, I have to tell you that... Don't call me Ill, it's the full name. No, Illy? Illy will work, Illy will work. Now, Ill, I have to tell you that... Don't call me Ill.
Starting point is 00:22:45 It's the full name. No, Illy? Illy will work. Illy will work. The domain name, I should tell you, it's not case sensitive. So I notice whenever I write your name on my site, I'm very, very careful. It's small I, small L, no, big L. No, big L.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Small I, big L. It's small I and big L's and then vibe is lowercase. All right. And the reason. Let's say it is neat because you can hear, you should check it out because you can hear a lot of your music on it, which I love. It's great. The reason I do the uppercase, lowercase like that is that when I was really young, I put up my first poster at my school and I overheard somebody asking who 3Vibe was.
Starting point is 00:23:21 So I thought I'm going to have to do something to correct that. You're right. I never thought of that. That freaking makes sense. Now you know the rest of the story. Pop-up video. That makes sense. Pop-up podcasts.
Starting point is 00:23:32 What's your favorite kind of music? Well, hip-hop is kind of my bread and butter, what I've been doing for years. But what I listen to when I'm not making music and I'm just chilling with my lady or my friends, I listen to a lot of soul music. That's really what I listen to when I'm not making music and I'm just chilling with my lady or my friends, I listen to a lot of soul music. That's really what I listen to. And so as I get older making music, my music, I find, kind of heading in that direction. So I sing a little bit more than I used to, do some of that kind of thing. That is cool.
Starting point is 00:23:58 And do you listen to any rock at all? I do listen to rock. Yeah, I mean, I grew up in Barrie. My dad is a classic rock guy and listened to I grew up in Barrie. My dad is a classic rock guy. I listen to Rock 95 up in Barrie every day. I grew up on classic rock music as well. I listen to a little bit of everything. I love reggae music
Starting point is 00:24:13 and a little electronic as well. I'm a music guy. I was going to say, you must know a little classic rock because you mentioned Blunts and Roses. Just for the listening audience, you and I know each other because we have a mutual friend uh mike kick never heard of him yeah mike kick who uh he i've known him forever uh he's on my ball team i think he got a shout out in one of the earlier episodes so he doesn't get another
Starting point is 00:24:38 one today he's had it filled his quota i'll give you a shout out to my kick now my quote is full too yeah now we're good now he's got it so um he turned me on he's like you got to download this blunts and roses and i this is way before you did any theme song for me or whatever i downloaded it i listened to it while i was working it made its way onto my ipod i actually really liked blunts and roses because i like that fusion of like that classic rock, rap, hip hop fusion. So for Rosie, who probably hasn't heard of Blunts and Roses, it's not Guns and Roses, Rosie, it's Blunts and Roses. So here's a little taste.
Starting point is 00:25:17 Taster. A little taste. So you come in, what is this, Leonard Skinner? Yeah, yeah, Simple Man. Great tune in its own right. Absent-minded, he's a producer, artist I work with. He produced all the sort of mash-up fusion on this album. He did a good job.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Yeah, it's great. I'm watching Rosie listen. Good. It's really good. Is this going on your blank CDs? So I would fill a whole CD just with this. There's lots. Sometimes I do that. I'll put the song over the mic.
Starting point is 00:25:58 I'll put it on the mic. So that, I'm going to play in the background a bit here. That's, yeah, just an example. But the whole album's full of this kind of stuff. The one I really like, I was a big Guns N' Roses fan. And their cover of Dylan's Knockin' on Heaven's Door is like one of my favorite covers of all time. And you do a nice little... Yeah, what did you...
Starting point is 00:26:20 Is that your favorite track from the Guns N' Roses album? I really like that Mama Told Me there. And I really like that Mama Told Me there. I really like Let Me... It's funny because when I did the album, Mama Told Me was not one of my favorites. But I mean, obviously I enjoyed it. You know what it is? I like Simple Man. It depends how much I like the source material.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Yeah, that's true. But I would say that it's one of the tracks where I get the most feedback from people being like, Oh, I listen to that all the time. I know me and my girl broke up and I listened to that song a lot. Is that the first cut on the album? Is that the first cut? I don't even remember if I'm being 100% honest. But yeah, it seems to have resonated with people, so that's cool.
Starting point is 00:26:54 Well, this is the... So you start off here. This is clearly the Guns N' Roses version. We're not Bob Dylan here. So it's a cover of a cover. Yeah, which works. There's someone, Whale, put out it's a cover of a cover. Yeah, which works. There's someone, Whale put out a song called Cover of a Cover.
Starting point is 00:27:10 Yeah, it's at some point. You did a good job picking two songs where I lead the track off. Well, you know, that voice, everybody knows it. I think that's why I like it, because I like your voice. What up, Mike?
Starting point is 00:27:21 What up, Mike? It's funny, because I don't actually talk with as much of a rasp as when I rap. But when I was really young, my favorite rappers were people like Busta Rhymes. And you heard their voice for five seconds. You instantly knew who it was on the record. And I always wanted that. So if you heard even five seconds on my songs, you would know instantly who it was.
Starting point is 00:27:39 It's like a trademark. Yeah. Very cool. If you stay sick, you could have a trademark as well. You know what? I think I'm getting there. What up, Mike? Does your voice, when you rap, does your voice consciously change?
Starting point is 00:27:51 How does it work? I've always wondered that. The way I rap, I think of it the way somebody sings. So when you sing, you have a cadence to your voice. You know how it sounds the best. So as soon as I go into my kind of rap mode, I kind of settle into that lower tone. And it just, yeah, I mean, I've been doing it for about 15 years now. So I just automatically slide into it.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Yeah, it's very cool. Tell me about the video directing. So you direct a lot of videos now. Yeah, that's my new thing. I mean, as everybody knows, there's not a lot of money in Canadian music. So, you know, even though I've been really lucky and blessed with some things, it's a struggle. What I got into was directing music videos for myself because I couldn't afford to hire the video production companies that existed 10 years ago. They wanted $5,000 to come out and shoot a video.
Starting point is 00:28:37 I got into doing it myself. More recently, as I've become more competent, I've been shooting some videos for some other people. I'm really excited. I've got a video coming out for some guys they're called perfect strangers they're like canadian hip-hop i used to watch that show the group is based on that show but i just directed a video for these rappers no i know i know this show i'm kidding but yeah so i'm i'm finally working with from a video side of things working with some people that i grew up listening to their music. So it's kind of cool for them to trust their image in my hands.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Absolutely. Yeah, it's real cool. Yeah, very cool. You're working with any artists I've heard of? I'm very in tune with the underground Toronto hip-hop scene. From a video perspective, I mean, it's a lot of independent artists. Just make up names. I won't know if they're real or not.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Oh, MC Screwdriver. Yeah, he's thedriver Yeah He's the best He's the bomb Rocky McFlave Rocky McFlave Yeah boys Very good You mentioned your podcast
Starting point is 00:29:35 Oh yeah Talk to me How can we hear about it So my podcast You can find it on iTunes If you just look up It's called The Hip Hop Revolution Podcast
Starting point is 00:29:42 You can also access That and anything else From my website So if you go to IllvibeMusic.com Hop Revolution podcast you can also access that and anything else from my website so if you go to illvibemusic.com there's a section for the podcast and for the videos and all that stuff what's the name of that again Hip Hop Revolution Hip Hop Revolution also the alternate title of this podcast we almost went with it right Rosie we had a
Starting point is 00:29:57 meeting we were going to call it Hip Hop Revolution that close and you got you got nine episodes on us you would have vetoed we just we did our fourth episode recently. I'm really excited. We've got Chocolare coming in to do episode five. Oh, very nice. You do?
Starting point is 00:30:09 Yeah, so I'm very excited. Oh, stop it, Rose. I just hit the guest. That's the third guest you hit. We talked about this. Is there an HR department for the trauma podcast? Bish. That's right.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Yeah, I got to file something with you, Bish. He didn't see. He didn't see. File a report with this gentleman right here. No, just I quite enjoy it. That's a thought. I quite like chocolate. I'm a fan.
Starting point is 00:30:30 I grew up idolizing. I had ice cold in my first car, so it'll be cool to talk to him about that. I'm very excited. Oh, that's cool. I just realized you've hit every male guest we've had because, oh, Colleen's the momfessional didn't get a beating, but you hit Elvis. Because she's talking mom stuff, and that's not that revelatory to me. And you're sexist.
Starting point is 00:30:49 You won't hit a woman. Is that correct? Oh, no. I would. Oh. That is another podcast. Yeah. Let me know what episode that is.
Starting point is 00:30:57 I'll tune in. And so you mentioned your website and how we could get at your podcast. Is there anything else you want to share with the audience here? Shit, I don't know. If you do dig the Toronto Mike theme song, I have an album sort of more to my traditional style of music, that kind of jazzy, soulful, bluesy sound, coming out this December called To the Moon and Back,
Starting point is 00:31:16 which you can get for free at illvibemusic.com. So if you're listening right now and it's snowing out and it's December, head over to illvibemusic.com and download that. Illy, if everything's free everywhere in the illvibemusic universe, I got a question. Everything is free. I have a question. Everything is free. I know. That's a problem. I mean, like you're free for real. Like, yeah, I can go get the Weezer album
Starting point is 00:31:36 for free. There's some bay with pirates on it and I can hook it up. But you're real free. Like you put it on your website and it's free. Yeah, everything's free. So, please tell me, in my ignorance, like ignorance, where do you make money? Is it just you're hoping to get booked for concerts or is it doing people's videos? You're going to pay him for this appearance. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:54 First of all. You did get my rider, right? Hey, no. No brown M&Ms. I saw that. I removed them all. I'm racist when it comes to candy. Well, for me, you know what it is? I look at my idols from a guy like Cardinal or Chocolat who 15, 20 years into their careers
Starting point is 00:32:10 are finally getting to a place where there's commercial success from a financial perspective. Money. Money. Cardinal moved out of his parents' house and I've been listening to him for 10 years at that point. Wow. So with realistic expectations, for me it's all about reaching as many people as possible so you know i've got a day job i work in marketing and i have a lot of fun at that so um you know i would love to release as much music as possible and just have people
Starting point is 00:32:35 digging it like that's what it's all about for me so well i love i mean we're rooting for you obviously i need you to become famous so my opening theme has some more weight to it. I can say, you know, Ill Vibe recorded this just before he broke. And I will deny. Yeah. I will deny. That was a different Mike I was talking about in that song. That's funny. Anyways, you were fantastic.
Starting point is 00:32:56 I just think your stuff is great. And I almost think I'd pay for it. That's how good it is. Almost, yeah. Well, that's huge coming from Mike because he doesn't... He's a dirty thief. That's his reputation. Well, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:09 There's some bay and there's... I don't really pay attention to these things. Rosie, we can reach you on Twitter at Rosie in Toronto. Sure can. I'll follow you. I don't follow you yet. Follow her. She deserves to be followed.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Only if she follows me back at illvibemusic. I follow you i don't follow you yet follow her she deserves to be followed she follows me back at at ill vibe music i follow you you do i appreciate that no problem and i'm on twitter as well so follow me at toronto mike and rosie you're a great blog uh that i need to catch up on you know what i just uh i caught you i don't love sites that are selling things, even when they're discounted things, because I feel like I have too much stuff as it is, and I'm allergic to the accumulation of stuff. But Mike, mytorontoscoop.com isn't always about selling things. No, there's services as well. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:33:58 And also just stuff that I've checked out in the city that I think is really cool. So I think it's a nice mix of that. I'm starting to... Well, I'm starting to follow it more closely now. So mytorontoscoop.com. And Bish, where the hell can we find you? Actually, Bish is a funny tweeter. Let's get you.
Starting point is 00:34:15 I try, guys. I think it's funny. Yeah, thanks. What's your handle? At Bish Radio. You're a different Bish on this podcast than you are on some of the other podcasts. I just like when you guys talk and I can just listen, you know. But I've seen you on Turd Pants.
Starting point is 00:34:28 You're talking like about rapes and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. We talk about just bad things. Don't listen to that show. It's really bad. But you guys are so sweet. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:37 I don't know. I see. You know, I come in. I see you doing your thing. They're so sweet. They look so sweet there. And then you listen in. And they're just adorable.
Starting point is 00:34:44 And they're talking about like how to rape grandma and all this. It's like, what the heck is this? That's that Mike Wixon. Is that him? That's a bad influence on everybody. Yeah, he's the one. That's why we handed him the pink. Everybody said grandma and rape in like the same sentence.
Starting point is 00:34:58 You know, I wouldn't recommend you do that. I'm not pro-rape by any means. And on that note thank you ill vibe thank you bish and thank you rosie this was episode 13 so much fun thanks for hanging out with us everyone see you soon see you later See you next week. Bye.
