I'm Mike
from TorontoMike.com
and joining me this week
for Pandemic Friday is
Stu Stone and Cam Gordon
Yeah! Hello!
Woo!
Welcome back!
Is it TorontoMike
or Toronto Mike?
How do you say it?
Because you say, well, I'm just saying like,
sometimes I hear you say, you say like Toronto Mike,
like T-R-O-N-O, Toronto Mike is how you say it.
Oh, okay.
How do you say it, Cam?
I say Toronto.
No, actually, I don't actually say that.
I do feel like I'm more in the Trana,
like from the Trana.
I can go both ways.
The Trana mic show?
Trana.
Well, we're joined by the fly on the wall,
I call her, Lieve Fumka.
Lieve, firstly, say hello to everybody
and tell us how you say the name of the city
that we're in right now. Toronto. Okay, but wait a minute everybody and tell us how you say the name of the city that we're in right now.
Toronto.
Okay, but wait a minute.
I didn't ask what's the name of the city.
I asked what your name is.
My name is Lieve Fumka.
No, no, no, not your name.
I'm talking about his name.
Is his name Toronto Mike or Toronto Mike?
Toronto.
Toronto Mike.
Toronto Mike.
Okay, just wanted to be clear.
Can I tell the listeners what your Zoom
names are? Can I just share?
No, well, why don't they just see it
in their Twitter pic?
Okay, just don't
forget to take one. Yeah, get some clicks on your website.
Yeah, man, we're trying to get you clicks. This is SEO,
bro. Yeah. Don't forget
to take that screen. I'm leaving
that in your hands, Cam, because you're the
responsible one here.
I'm in a good rhythm. I feel like we've got the last
three to four weeks.
Did we kill Jerry Stiller?
Because George Costanza
was the cold open before the episode
last week.
I want to know, do we get
credit? I don't want credit.
That's terrible.
I don't want credit for it, but we responsible no i think there's uh there's definitely been uh us mentioning people
and people passing away yes i don't recall saying jerry stiller's name no no i just played george
costanza i know and he played his father but maybe i was thinking more of the other guy that
we may have talked about that passed away.
Well, do you want to start like,
do you want to start by sharing like how you know Jerry Stiller professionally?
Cause we lost him last week and then we'll talk about the other legend that
we lost.
Okay.
So I'll set the stage for you.
It's the late nineties.
I'm in LA.
I'm auditioning for all sorts of stuff.
There's independent movies that are being made all the time.
Like with the success, independent films were starting to get big, you know?
Ben Stiller was doing a movie called The Independent.
And I auditioned for it. And I got the part to play this young Hollywood agent,
wannabe agent that's sort of like a bad guy in the film.
Wow.
And Jerry Stiller is the lead in the film.
So I had scenes with Jerry Stiller.
One in particular, like the very first time I met him,
like we had a scene in a limousine and the limousine came in
and like I got in the limousine and he was in it like that. And we were just off to the races.
Very nice guy. I spent a couple of days with him and he's so funny. And, uh, obviously he's a
legend, uh, in comedy. Jerry's been around since the beginning of time. He's, he's, you know,
Ben Stiller's dad for, for crying out loud.
And Anne Meara was his wife and partner forever.
And she's damn funny.
She was damn funny.
And I did tweet.
So if you follow Toronto Mike on Twitter,
you will have seen this limo scene
with Stu Stone and Jerry Stiller.
And Jerry Stiller.
But yeah, Jerry, comedy legend.
He's up there in the annals of guys
that not only inspired so many people in comedy,
but he also had longevity like a motherfucker.
I mean, this guy worked until last week.
You know, he has a very incredible life.
His life's work is duly noted by all of us.
So Jerry Stiller, definitely.
Absolutely.
Rest in peace.
Now I'm going to play a song, a theme song,
for a show that's very near and dear to your heart, Stu.
And it ties in brilliantly with another legend we lost this past week.
So let's hear this jam.
Seat belts, everyone! Please let this be a normal field trip with a print. No way! So let's with that jam.
I'm going to let them know.
That's the Magic School Bus.
It probably skipped them, but Magic School Bus is a show that's literally been airing for over 25 years in 7 billion countries
and has literally raised generations of kids through school.
And the theme song for that show, which you just heard, was sung by Little Richard, who passed away this last week.
Of course, Little Richard is famously known for pretty much inventing rock and roll,
Of course, Little Richard is famously known for pretty much inventing rock and roll, but his contribution to the Magic School Bus, certainly worth noting, you know, it was Little Richard and Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton and these types of celebrities that were part of the original series that helped get it sort of a bigger awareness.
And, of course, Little Richard singing the theme song for the Magic School Bus was a huge get and still is a huge get
Now Stu, I have an 18 year old
son and a 15 year old
daughter who
even when I played that jam for my daughter
when I learned it was
Little Richard because I had no clue that was Little Richard
until you told me but they both
were flushed with nostalgia
the Magic School Bus means a big deal to those guys i could see you know cam and leva
are just too old quite frankly for the magic school bus so unless you had a kid who kind of
was but cam knew me when i was recording the voice of ralphie for the magic school bus so he was aware
of the magic well bobby oh yeah i'm not supposed to read these names on zoom they're too great
though but uh here's what i want to say, though, is that I always knew the fun fact
that Franklin was performed by Bruce Colburn.
Bruce Colburn.
I've been saying Colburn like L's in there.
It's actually Coburn.
I don't know why I threw the L in there.
But Bruce Colburn records a song for Franklin.
Hey, it's Franklin.
But I had no idea that your great show, Stew Stone, The Magic School Bus,
the theme song, I had no idea it was Little Richard.
That's amazing.
Yeah, Little Richard.
Now, listen, Little Richard, there's a great, I think Cam may have sent it to me,
but somebody sent me this great speech of Little Richard was sort of hijacking the Grammys one year.
He was supposed to announce.
Yeah, it was with Robbie Robertson.
Yeah.
We talked about recently.
Right.
And you sort of see people sort of start like, you know, he's not wrong.
What he's saying there.
This guy got his whole gimmick stolen.
Listen, he was an influence not just on the style of rock and roll. You know, he was, you know,
this piano playing was revolutionary at the time,
the way he was sort of playing and singing and his flamboyance and his
over-the-top character, almost like a gorgeous George of music.
An influence on pro wrestling.
One of Cam's all-time favorite wrestlers,
Johnny B.
Bad is completely a little Richard gimmick.
And I know Cam used to shoot off
t-shirt cannons and stuff.
Well, yeah, remember the
confetti gun in Stu?
The confetti gun. Yeah, we saw
WCW at the Skydome
at the time, and Johnny B. Badd, I kept
the confetti
gun, for those of you
who don't remember, this was a wrestler.
What was his gimmick?
He was basically like a Little Richard impersonator.
He was Little Richard.
So not Coco Beware.
No, it's like how the honky-tonk man was Elvis.
This guy was Little Richard.
Yeah, very flamboyant.
Yeah, but he looked like him,
and he did a real good impression.
It was, yeah,
and he was quite the high flyer, too,
for someone who was a bit...
Interesting enough,
legit tough guy, Mark Merrow, gold glove boxer,
was the guy that played Johnny B. Badd.
Good footwork.
I know you guys, Cam and Stu specifically, particularly Stu, actually,
likes to joke that my only wrestling reference is that brief period in the mid-'80s,
and I keep referencing it because I'm going to do it again, okay?
Oh, that's the ending in Toronto. You were at the show.
No, no, no. This is in Toronto. You were at the show.
No, no, no. This is something else.
Paul fucking Orndorff. Oh, sorry. I forgot we're not supposed to swear anymore. Oh, yeah.
I'm going to read that tweet in a moment, actually. Thanks for reminding me.
Bobby Thigpen, 57 saves
in 19.
Sorry, go ahead. We weren't supposed
to ruin that. I was going to share
the fun fact that
Mean Gene Okerlund covers
covers him.
Rock and roll, hoochie-coo, Tootie Fruity.
Tootie Fruity from Little Richard's
Tootie Fruity was covered by Mean
Gene on the wrestling album.
Well, Ric Flair directly credits
Jerry Lee Lewis for
his woo, and we all know
Jerry Lee Lewis got his woo from Little Richard.
So indirectly, Little Richard influenced even Ric Flair.
Wow.
And Jerry Lee Lewis is still alive,
and everybody he ripped off is gone.
I know they called Little Richard the architect of rock and roll.
That was what the scholars would refer to Little Richard as.
Maybe he's not the...
I mean, you've got...
It's like Chuck Berry,
Little Richard.
Bill Haley, maybe,
in the comics?
Sure.
Yeah, and you're right.
And then, so you could talk about
how if Chuck Berry
is the father of rock and roll,
then you can give
Little Richard the architect role.
But yeah, a couple of big losses.
But since I played
the Magic School Bus,
and remind us,
what was the name of your character
on the Magic School Bus? Ralphie, Ralph what was the name of your character on the Magic School Bus?
Ralphie. Full name Ralphie Tinelli.
A possible proprietor
of a Palma Pasta location.
Oh, yeah.
Last week I shared Gino lost his mom to
COVID. I don't know.
Yeah, you said that last week.
Yeah, it's still sad.
It's like you hear it again and it's still oh no.
Okay, yeah.
And I'm going to play another theme song
that ties into something that happened on Toronto Mike this past week.
The Edison Twins.
Now remind us, what was the name of your character on the episode?
I don't even know if my character had a name.
I mean, he was just so, he was just like Joey or something like that.
He was like, Joey, it was Joey.
See, I think Linda thinks that you're the main guy from the Edison Twins.
Yeah, I'm not. No.
Linda needs to know that I'm not.
But ironically, and I've said this before,
the main kid from the Edison Twins, the little brother,
he played max on
my pet monster so me and him were whoa whoa whoa whoa yeah back up
okay like the kid with the fun fact the kid with the wings on his hat his name is sunny
best and thrasher wow and you worked with him Monster. So I was on the Edison Twins with him.
I played his buddy on the Edison Twins.
That was my role.
I was like his friend when he went down to the river.
Right.
Wow.
So he was Max and I was Chucky on My Fat Monster.
So we were Max and Chucky.
That was us.
If I can blow your mind a little more, who do you think wrote, recorded, and performed
that theme song we just listened to?
That would have had to have been based on what we're talking about.
I'm going to go with Chuck Berry.
Bob Segherini, my guest on Toronto Mic this past year.
Bob Segherini did that song?
And he had a recurring character on Edison Twins.
Everybody did. I mean, that's what I'm
trying to say. It's like, if you don't have Edison Twins
on your bio, you're not a Canadian legend.
Was Al Waxman on it? Like, he
must have done Run-In at some point.
I have Al Waxman stories.
How would Art Hindle ever appear
on the Edison Twins? I don't know,
but Al Waxman,
the King of Kensington,
I once did a film with him,
and he thought I was so great that he was going to start doing a production
of some Neil Simon play.
I think it was like Lost in Yonkers or something.
He was going to direct the play, and he wanted me to be in it.
So I went in there, and I had never done like a professional theater
like that before, you know.
So I went in to the thing, and had my script and I was sort of like
reading it.
Like I was on a set and this other kid,
the kid who played monkey years on ready or not.
If you remember that kid,
of course he knew all of his lines off book.
Oh,
wow.
And goodbye,
Stu Waxy sent,
sent me packing and brought in Benji.
Brought in a real thespian.
And then Benji Planner ended up playing the role marvelously, might I add.
He did a great job.
Hey, champ.
But my Al Waxman story started out big and then ended with me out the door.
Hey, champ. Wow.
I heard your wife's quite the thespian.
Because you know who was my guest right after?
Like, literally, I hung up the phone.
The champ. With Bob Segherini. because you know who was my guest right after like literally i hung up the phone the champ with bob segurini and then i ended up uh zooming with uh brother jake edwards who's the
champ uh yeah did he do champ for you yeah he sure did wow so anyway uh i'm gonna read a tweet
uh from a melissa mccallum melissa mccallum tweeted and we all got tagged on this by the way and
okay just listening
she misses a word
here and there so I'm going to write it like she intended
because she actually missed the word too here but
you're paraphrasing
I'm mildly paraphrasing sick
I think we'll put sick in parenthesis
here what does sick mean
this is the way this mistake was
in the original source.
It's like, this mistake is now mine.
What does S-I-C stand for?
Probably Latin. Do you speak Latin,
Cam?
No. I feel like someone needs to look this up.
Hey, Stu, do you feel like,
because we're recording at a different time, do you feel
Cam's energy level is a little lower than normal?
No, I think he's
got to take his steroids, or whatever he does, his PEDs.
Oh, you're going to be getting a letter from my attorney on that one.
Always trying to get us.
You haven't learned your lesson yet.
Good thing I have a lawyer.
And I have a backup lawyer now, too.
So I have my lawyer, Ron Davis, and then I have my backup lawyer, Lord so i have my lawyer uh ron davis and then i have my
backup lawyer lord horn i mean listen i'm sure i'm sure if i was to climb my family tree there'd
be lawyers doctors all sorts of people so be careful the stones right okay so melissa mccallum
tweeted just listening to the latest kick out the jams with stew stone and cam gordon and toronto mike with clearly entranced i'm guessing clearly
entranced is maybe her husband and i almost got the feeling like maybe clearly entranced is the
true fan of the program and maybe melissa's listening because he wants to put it in the car
good taste clearly entranced uh and honestly hearing swear words come out of Mike's mouth is like
hearing Mr. Rogers or Mr.
Dress-Up swear.
So, that's the tweet.
You know, because I can say that
I've never heard Ernie Combs
swear. Right.
But I've sworn so many times.
He's like, Casey Finnegan,
get the fuck over here!
I've never heard Freddie Rogers cuss.
That would be really something.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's almost like, can you imagine?
He probably swore.
But can you imagine, let's say, for example, can you imagine a swear word coming out of
Jerry Howard smell?
Like, he's the kind of guy that-
He probably does.
Well, I don't know.
It's like there's outtakes of Jerry Howard being like, God damn it, Tom.
See, I'm going to say no.
I'm going to say that doesn't exist.
Like, I just don't think he would ever.
No, come on.
Did you ever hear that?
I swear we've talked about this before,
but there's like a Casey Kasem outtake
that Howard Stern always goes to.
You never would expect Casey Kasem to swear,
and he's like, God damn it, you piece of shit.
Right, because he can't do the Sad dead dog letters coming out of
An uptempo song I know
This is fantastic
I feel like we talked about this
The song
U2 by the band Negative Land
Do you guys know that one?
I don't know it
It has the intro from Casey Kasem
Talking about the band U2.
And it was like an outtake.
He's like, what the fiddly dee flying fuck?
Why should I care about this Irish band?
You guys know this?
At all?
I got to check it out.
It's a real cut up classic negative land.
If Ian Service were here, I bet you he would have known it.
I feel like we're really missing Ian today.
So Tim,
if you're out there.
Can I get a,
can I get a quick plug in before we like dive deep here next week?
I'll talk more about this,
but I have another movie,
believe it or not.
Okay.
Tell us what is it?
It's,
it's called scarecrows.
It's a,
it's a,
it's a comedy horror film.
It's not that scary.
It's more kind of funny than scary.
A popcorn flick.
It's going to be coming out on Tuesday across Canada and Toronto. And it is going to be
available on demand. If you have any providers that you use or wherever you go to look for
these new releases, it will be there. It's called Scarecrows. It was shot locally here in Ontario.
And it features a cast of nice local Ontario actors.
And I directed the film.
I wrote it with my brother-in-law and partner, Adam.
It's a local, homegrown, organic film that sort of made some headways and did pretty well.
And now it's going to be in Canada.
It's called Scarecrows.
Lieve Fumka has a floor.
But it's not on IMDb.
It is on IMDb. It's called Scarecrows.
Oh, Crows. Okay.
Sorry. What did you think it was?
Scarecows? Scarecrow.
Maybe singular.
But no, this implies that there's more than one.
So let's reiterate
this fantastic fact.
I'm sure Linda is ordering it right now.
Can she get it in advance?
Can she order it today?
There's no advanced copies available at the moment, but that's a paywall that we're discussing.
It's all about paywalls in 2020, Cam.
Right.
Awesome.
Congrats, man.
Is this the one with the Great Lakes beer cans in it?
No, that's next.
You're prolific.
with the Great Lakes beer cans in it?
No, that's next.
You're prolific.
Where do you find the time with all these pandemic Friday obligations?
Amazing.
I'm excited about it.
So maybe next week when it comes out,
if the listeners could do me a solid
and spread the word,
that would be cool.
But I'll definitely remind everybody next week,
assuming there's still a pandemic next week. Right, never
assume. It makes an asset of you and me.
Is Art Hindle in Scarecrows?
He is. He mentioned
off camera.
Okay, congrats to that. That's amazing.
Anything, Cam, anything you want to say to
Melissa McCallum? At first
I thought she was upset at me for swearing
because I think her handle
is something like mom of three boys or something.
And I envisioned that she's in the car with the kids.
And all of a sudden, I say an F-bomb or something, and it's upsetting.
But it turns out she's not upset at me for swearing.
She just can't imagine me swearing, which just says she doesn't listen that often, actually.
But anything you want to say to Melissa before we move on?
No, no.
Nothing comes to mind. mind and yeah it's more
character observation uh i suppose more than but that's a is it a compliment i don't know is it's
sort of that bob saget kind of thing because like people who only know bob saget from full house in
america's funny some videos if they saw him in person and spoke to him in person they would
faint you know what i mean it's like mike is sort like that. Mike is actually not a great guy. He's a dick.
He swears. He says four-letter
words all the time. I think Mike
has range. Kind of the loving
father of four, family
man on the one hand, but just
kind of a malicious,
angry,
middle-aged.
Kind of a bitch.
Kind of on the victory lap of life.
You know, he's bitter.
Down his basement, you know.
We're all there, you know.
Cam, I love the Run DMC outfit there.
That's, seriously.
You see that?
And I want to congratulate Stu Stone
before we get too deep here.
Is that the beard?
Thank you.
The beard is really,
no, not, Scarecrows is great,
but I want to talk about the beard. It's coming
in very thick and full and it's really good.
You know, my Jose Bautista impression is getting...
It's going to start not being able to happen.
Why don't you get a screen cap of that, Cam?
Oh, definitely.
Anyway, people are missing out the best part.
I got to figure out how to live stream the the zoom here but that's a paywall does anyone know if david alter heard the uh
the pandemic friday episode last week yeah i i meant to ping him about it but then i i wasn't
i wasn't so sure because we kind of you know we were gentle weren't the most complimentary to his
uh his choice this horrendous choice yeah no we we weren't, but we didn't.
It's like he went to McDonald's. He's so
hungry. He would eat anything at this point.
He went to McDonald's and he got the filet of fish.
It's like that's what he did.
That's what he did with his selection.
That's what Catholics order on Fridays.
I used to work at McD's.
That's the big Catholic order on Fridays.
Okay, so David Alter, if you're
listening, it was nothing personal.
We just thought your taste in music was horrendous there.
Happy 35th anniversary to Palma Pasta.
That's this weekend.
And this is a cool story.
The matriarch of the family, Palma,
and her husband, Marsilio,
they literally, they started Palma Pasta
when they were 54 and 61 years old.
So imagine yourself at that age and then deciding, okay, now we're going to open up a restaurant. Literally, they started Palma Pasta when they were 54 and 61 years old.
So imagine yourself at that age and then deciding, okay, now we're going to open up a restaurant.
It's a super high risk, and they gambled their life savings.
And again, this is a time when most people are retiring.
And here we are 35 years later talking about it on Toronto Mic'd. What an age we live in.
So enjoy the best Italian food you can buy this side of Italy, and happy anniversary to Palma Pasta. Happy anniversary, guys. Mazel tov from your friends over
here on Pandemic Fridays. And we look forward, Cam and I specifically, look forward to collecting,
I think we're up to 10 lasagnas each at this point. We're going to be able to open up our
own Palma Pasta franchise location with all the pasta that you
owe us. I owe you a lot of lasagna.
I owe you a lot of fresh craft beer
from Great Lakes. Yes.
They're fantastic people.
For the long weekend here, you should really
go and do the curbside pickup at the
30 Queen Elizabeth Boulevard
retail store from Great Lakes. They're good
people. I owe you guys how many
Toronto Mike stickers from stickeru.com?
And I know this is
true, especially now that
Ian or Tim has signed up, but
you've all signed up at garbageday.com
slash Toronto Mike to
support the show and get those
alerts about your garbage day, right?
Absolutely.
Oh, man. I mean, first day that it was available. Oh, man.
I mean, first day that it was available.
All right.
Just making sure.
I actually created this bot to make sure that I got in.
I don't know if you're smart enough to create any bots.
I got people.
I got people.
Quick, speaking of bots. The newest Star Wars, the one that came out in late 2019 or whatever,
no one in my family had seen it.
And we all watched it on that Disney Plus last week.
And because a lot of us had seen them all,
but my six-year-old is really into Star Wars right now.
And I got to tell you, that was a really bad movie.
Like, I really, really thought it was bad.
I don't know what you guys think of the Star Wars universe
and the new Star Wars, but I thought it was really weak.
You know, I've actually never seen any of the star wars movies so whoa whoa whoa whoa back back up i know i'm really bringing it today this is good like
you are a fucking monster pardon my language too what's her name leah mccollum i apologize
to her let's get her name right hold on you are a fucking monster cam and i I apologize to her. You are a fucking monster,
Cam. And I'm sorry to our kids that are
in the van. Kids, if you're
with Mom McCollum
and you're in the car, close your ears
for a second. Uncle Stu's got to say
something for the grown-ups. Cam, you are
a fucking monster.
Sorry, you guys can listen.
Yeah, I don't
know. I just have to like not i don't know but
how did you escape childhood for me i've never seen any harry potter movies that's fine lord of
the rings movies me neither me neither but how i need to know i know i have a few years in you guys
but i'm not i'm not that like star wars was hard to avoid like when you were kids like when you
were like a hipster when you were five?
Don't you go to birthday parties?
I've been in the room when it's been on, but
I don't believe, and you can
check with my parents. I don't
think I ever sat down and actually watched them.
What were you doing?
Collecting rocks?
I was watching a lot of animal
shows. Lauren Green's New Wilderness.
Neil Chavoma's Wild Kingdom.
Fraggle Rock.
Yeah, some Fraggle Rock.
Fables of the Green Forest.
Sure.
Jeremy, you know, all the hits.
Jeremy the Bear was amazing.
That was a French show.
Listen, TV Ontario, we should do a whole deep dive another time.
Dr. Snuggles.
Watch Party or something.
Right.
Dr. Snuggles was a big deal.
All of it. All of it.
Simon and the Land of Chalk Joins.
Everything about it.
That wasn't TVO though. The Great Space Coaster was WUTV.
That was our mainstream.
That was WUTV.
That's right.
That was, yeah, 29 where I used to watch Benny Hill.
That was my station for Benny Hill back in the day.
Alright, we're going to get Cam to explain the theme
of this week's Kick Out the Jam episode, Pandemic Friday.
I'm just going to remind everybody that if they want tips
for setting up safe work from home networks,
check out the free report at cdntechnologies.com
slash WFH.
And if you have an immediate IT need,
anything at all,
just call 905-542-9759.
Talk to Barb and tell her Toronto Mike sent ya.
Wait, wait, hold on a minute.
Can you just, I didn't have my pen.
Can you say the number again?
905.
905, yeah.
542 yeah 542
542 right
9759
975 what
599
it's Patrick he bought life insurance
alright
that's that guy
what's the other area code
like 416 is the main one
what's our second one 905 no
646647 right this is episode 647 there we go just wanted to let you know okay cam the floor is yours
what is the theme today before we kick out these gems well the theme the theme today, sorry, I had to check myself for a second.
Yeah, it was something, I feel like Stewie mentioned this, and we all thought it was a good idea on either a past episode
or perhaps it was just in a DM thread.
And to be honest, I forgot what song or what artist might have prompted this,
but the idea of songs by teenagers,
maybe we were talking about silver chair or
something i don't recall specifically but when you really think about it there's there's a lot of uh
top 40 hits over the years including in the present day uh maybe that's a spoiler to some
tunes we're going to hear um who have been you know not not even the age of majority. They couldn't even vote, but they had songs in the top 40 chart.
So basically today's theme is, we came up with a snappy little name, Tots and Teens.
So these are songs by either like little kids or teenagers.
And just to specify, we're not talking mini pops,
and we're not talking kid bops, and we're not talking mini-pops, and we're not talking kid-bops, and we're not talking...
Tamas Wonderland singers.
Yeah, like fake bands or band whatever.
Teddy from Full House at the talent show.
We're not talking about kids' albums either.
These are contemporary songs performed by kids.
That's right.
So no Raffi stuff, no Sherrod, Lois, and Bram.
Those artists are certainly
not teenagers.
Shout out to Sunshine and Broccoli.
You won't be hearing them on here.
Splashin' Boots.
Yeah, I was going to say Puss in Boots, Splashin' Boots.
Splashin' Boots.
FOTM's Splashin' Boots.
Boot Sauce, you know, whatever.
Oh, I like Boot Sauce.
This is a good topic and it was fun putting
these lists, because again, all of a sudden
you're like, oh yeah, a lot of
teenagers have had hits over the years.
It's quite amazing.
I've actually crafted
a great narrative through my picks
this week. I have a great story to tell
that shows the true evolution
of a certain sub-genre
within the Tots and
Teens category.
Before I begin,
I'll just say it. Stu wins again.
I win again,
obviously. I'm going to let you guys know
right now, if you want to
continue listening to the show from this point on,
you can. Spoiler, though,
I'm going to win again.
Are you ready for Cam's first jam?
Yes. I hope
Cam does not let me down here.
I really hope he doesn't let me down.
This feels like so real. I'm obsessive. Chained in love
Chained in love
Chained in love
Alright, this is the artist I call RiRi.
You might know her better as Rihanna.
SOS.
Talk to us, Cam.
Yes, this is one of Rihanna's early singles.
Came out in February 2006.
Perhaps a future topic.
You know, songs that sample songs that you didn't realize were covers.
Because I know we
talked about soft sell in section tainted love which is a cover of who who was it gloria jones
i think correct good memory yeah so great i mean great song i mean rihanna is i don't know i i
almost feel like rihanna's underrated which sounds crazy because she's wildly popular, but she seems like she's literally never off the charts,
and she's been with us in the public consciousness for 15 years now or so.
I don't know about you guys.
This was the first Rihanna song I became familiar with.
This is also one of those songs I loved the first 15 seconds,
and the rest of the song I'm slightly less enthusiastic about.
That was a great opening.
It just gets right in there.
There's no slow buildup.
It just like bang.
You get that kind of like, bop, bop, like the little soft sell sample.
Stu looks unimpressed.
I'm just like so.
What's on your mind, pal?
I can't believe how...
What a piece of shit entry you opened with.
Oh.
You think of Rihanna, you don't think kid artist.
I don't, at least.
I mean, there's so many things that you could have gone with,
and you went with Rihanna.
How old was she there?
I'm not even sure.
Yeah, so she's born in 1988.
So she was like 17, 17 probably when she recorded that.
She's like fairly legal.
She's almost on the cusp of not being eligible for this list.
But she is eligible.
She's eligible.
I do agree that Rihanna is an impressive powerhouse,
an iconic brand, and made her.
If you would have thought from hearing this crap song that you just played
that she would go on to have such a prolific career, you wouldn't have thought from hearing this crap song that you just played, that she would go on to be,
have such a prolific career.
You wouldn't have thought that she definitely over,
over it,
overcame this song and became one of the most prolific artists.
As you said,
uh,
I'm not,
I think what you're saying is you're not an SOS fan.
I mean,
listen,
Stu,
it's not that bad.
It's just a poppy dance hit from a 17 year old.
Then it's got a good groove to it, a good sample in there.
What do you hate so much about it?
I just think that it's just...
Not meant to be the Ramones.
No, I hear you.
I just...
I'm not going to...
Listen, it sounds like I'm angry against the song,
and I'm more angry about the song being used for this particular...
Like, you could have picked five songs.
You should.
Yeah. Wow. Five songs like you could have picked five songs. It should. Yeah.
He picked five songs that he could have gone with.
And it's just like,
when I think of toys for tots,
I don't think of Rihanna.
And I don't think anybody except.
Wait, wait, wait.
We're not talking toys for tots.
You know what I'm saying?
Let's again.
Tiny tots.
Okay.
Well, listen,
definitely a hit song.
I'll give him that.
Okay. Definitely a team. So. Well, listen. Definitely a hit song. I'll give him that. Okay.
Definitely a teen.
So, therefore, a great pick.
Tots.
Stay with me now.
Teens.
Rihanna was a teen.
Big hit.
Great artist.
Big hit.
Yeah.
Prolific artist.
Well, as a referee of sorts, if I may, I can see Stu doesn't like the jam.
That's fine.
That's very subjective. It's not that I don't like the jam. That's fine. That's very subjective.
It's not that I don't like the jam.
Again, it's not about the jam.
It's about the jam in this context.
But I would argue that we're doing teens and tots, which is sort of like the world juniors.
I know, but come on.
If you were to do Family Feud and you said Rihanna, it's not on the top answers.
It's like Survey says, and nobody's putting Rihanna in their top 15 answers.
When we watch the World Junior Tournament
every December and January,
we have one expectation.
These will be men under the age of 20,
which means they're at least 19 or younger.
This is the rule.
The same rule applies for today's episode
of Pandemic Friday.
And Rihanna was 17 when she records that song.
It's a fine selection.
Listen, it definitely...
Okay, all right.
If you really break it down,
you can make a case for it belonging here.
I'm not saying that it doesn't qualify statistically.
I'm saying that if you were to ask people
to name a song by a tot or a teen,
Rihanna's name would never be brought up
other than by Cam right now.
I went to...
She was known as being a teen songwriter. Look, you're shaking your head over there. Rihanna's name would never be brought up other than by Cam right now. I went total, like she was
known as being like teen.
Look, you're shaking your head over there. Are you agreeing with me
or disagreeing with me?
Leva? Yes.
She's muted. I don't think she's
talking to you right now. She's shaking
her head. Is she not talking to us? She's talking to
somebody else? Stu needs you, Leva.
I don't know. I disagree
with Stu. I'm sorry.
Yeah, but she's wrong. That's okay.
It's okay. Wait till Linda finds out.
Holy smokes. When you think of Rihanna, you think
of a teen artist? Because I don't.
Not anymore.
She's old. This is her second album.
She's like 30. Like Avril Lavigne.
Anyway, let's slide this.
Wow. Spoiler.
Spoiler. Sorry about that.
Let's kick out the winner's first jam.
This is Stew Stones.
Sponsored by Winners. Thank you. Get the opening right.
I want to tell them, don't bore us.
Get to the chorus.
On the monkey bars.
This is a real kid act right here, okay?
We're talking about another bad creation.
This is the brainchild, and the intro to sort of a theme,
I'm going to give you a history of kids in rap.
And I think Lil Bow Wow is not going to be on my list, although he could have been.
I want to start with another bad creation who are put together by a kid star himself, Michael Bivens,
who is part of a kid group called New Edition, which was sort of like the 80s answer to the Jackson 5.
We'll get to them later, I'm sure.
Michael Bivens, of course, one of the most successful guys in music, if you really think about it.
I mean, he made a ton of money with New Edition.
Then his side group, his Foo Fighters, if you will,
Belle Viv Devoe, they did extremely well.
They had a nice run. Then he started a production company with a young man, Dallas Austin,
who went on to become a huge producer and mega star in his own right.
And they signed Boys to Men.
And they signed this group, Another Bad Creation.
Another Bad Creation, of course, they are little kids.
They're little kids. So they're tots. They're tots. They are little kids. They're little kids.
So they're tots.
They're tots.
They are definitely tots.
There's five kids in the group.
Roro, who is Cam's favorite.
Roro and Mark of Another Art Creation
actually appeared in the Michael Jackson
Black or White video.
The youngest member of the group
is only eight years old.
His name is Red. And this member of the group was only eight years old. His name is Red.
And this is the youngest group ever to have a song in the
top ten on the
Billboard charts. Is that right?
Do they count the little guy from
Mbop?
Yeah. Spoiler there.
Hanson. See, Cam could have played Hanson
and it would have been better than Rihanna.
How do you know I'm not going to?
I hope you do. I really pray you do.
I have great memories of this Aisha jam
here by Another Bad Creation. I remember them.
We called them a core piece
of the East Coast
family. Boys
commend ABCBBD.
East Coast family. Never skip the beat.
Of course, Another Bad Creation,
this was their first single, but their second single was even bigger than this,
and it was called At the Playground.
And that really, like, you know, these kids were rolling around on go-karts
and oversized big wheels, and it was just very kid or geared towards kids.
The lyrics are very kid-friendly.
Unlike any successful rap act I've heard before then and since then, probably.
But they're literally rapping about watching cartoons, playing on the monkey bars.
And we'll tease, this won't be a spoiler, it's more of a tease, but of course, famously dissed in a big hit.
Yes, yes, we'll get there.
We'll get there.
Yeah, obviously these are T.O.T.S.
This is a single I know very well anyways
from my years listening to Top 40 radio at the time.
I think 640 maybe was a Top 40 station
that played a lot of this song, as I recall.
I feel like this is almost in some ways similar to,
almost has that muscle memory that we experienced last week
listening to the Moody Blues, Your Wildest Dreams,
one of those songs that you don't really hear much anymore,
needless to say,
but then you hear it and it comes washing back over you.
And I certainly remember,
and obviously that very distinct early 90s sound.
Right, that drum, New Jack Swing.
New Jack Swing.
Yeah, exactly.
I like to call them ABC,
not to be mistaken by that band that sang.
I'm dancing. Oh no, that to be mistaken by that band that sang. I'm dancing.
Oh, no, that's not them. That's the Kinks.
That's the Kinks. ABC is a...
I roll through my heart.
That's right.
And also that song had the balls to sample Public Enemy.
There's Public Enemy samples in Aisha.
Aisha, Aisha, so glad to meet you.
Listen, big hit.
And kid rap arrived in a major way.
Wow, okay.
Let me kick out something a little different here. A clean-up woman is a woman who
Gets all the lovely girls laid behind
The reason I know so much about her is because she picked up a man of mine.
Chomping slick was my ruin.
Cause I found out All I was doing
Was making it easy
We lost Betty Wright.
So this is Betty Wright.
We lost her last week.
She passed away last week.
So we lost Little Richard,
we lost Jerry Stiller,
and we lost Betty Wright.
This jam, which you might know,
if you don't know this song,
which you're missing out,
it's fantastic,
but it's been sampled in many
hip-hop songs you know and love but uh she was only 17 when betty wright recorded
cleanup woman which we're listening to right now yeah like i i saw the bits for betty right
not to be mistaken with betty white obviously um i i'm not familiar with this artist.
I don't know where...
I know the song.
Should I be?
Should I know what this is?
It's a bit of an Irma Thomas type deal,
I always say,
where there's that one or two cuts
where you hear it and you're like,
oh, that's like a staple,
but you don't ever know the name
or the catalog.
So yeah, she's...
I think that this is definitely
an influential song, as you said.
Definitely, it's been sampled a billion times.
But a lot like Cam, I feel like you guys are just like squeezing these 17-year-olds in a kid's fucking category.
And these are kids with facial hair.
And it's like, you know, these kids have gone through puberty already.
You're bringing in not kidettes.
I mean, she's 17, sure.
But you could have, if you were to do a survey,
this song is never named, ever named.
And it's a great song.
Don't get me wrong.
I just think it's like another bad creation.
You'd never think that another bad creation would ever defeat Rihanna
or the great, or this song.
But it just happened.
So are, sorry, I might've missed the memo. Are we just trying to find the youngest children? Like, do we need? No, but it just happened. Sorry, I might have missed the memo.
Are we just trying to find the youngest children?
No, but I'm just saying, when you say teens and tots,
you guys are squeezing in these 17-year-olds that are not,
no one's thinking about that.
They should be 14-year-olds, 15-year-olds.
I think that Stu worked under a different criteria.
I was a child performer myself.
So I would say
that
I have the authority
here.
I have the authority
on what qualifies.
I mean, yes, she was 17, sure.
By the time the song came out, she was 17
and a half. I don't know.
I don't understand. A 17-year-old
recording a song is ineligible?
It's tots and teens.
First of all, 19
qualifies. Well, if you're
right, but right, no pun intended.
But 17, to me, this is
right in the wheelhouse of this topic.
That's well within the criteria.
Basically, he's from
zero to
19.
I was going to say
18 and 364 days.
Anybody within that
spectrum.
That's such a broad thing.
I feel like I'm coming this week with a bunch of kids.
Tots and teens.
You guys are bringing full-grown adults.
Tots and teens. She's 17.
That is a teenager.
Well, at least I've got the tots covered.
At least I've got the tots covered.
Tots and teens.
Okay.
Oh, yeah.
Let me hear the reaction.
I'm waiting for one of those classic Cam Gordon.
Stu, you're stupid.
I'm just waiting for it.
But let's kick out another Cam Jam here.
Damn all these beautiful girls. They only want to do what you do they'll
have you suicidal suicidal when they say it's over Beautiful girl, that's why it'll never work
You have me suicidal, suicidal
When you say it's over
Damn all these beautiful girls
They only wanna do your dirt
They'll have you suicidal, suicidal When they say it's over Sean Kingston
Yeah, so let's talk about beautiful girls sampling Benny King
Sean Kingston, you know, he was almost 19 when he sang this he was 17
and a half what do you say about that stew first on the scene his first single on the charts also
a number one track uh basically like an ichichiro suzuki type thing wins the mvp in his first season
um this is like very memorable song i mean one of those songs you hear for the first time
and it gets stuck
in your head, I mean everyone sort of knows
the Stand By Me sample
Mike's digging it
Mike's bopping his head
perhaps a little less impressed
she's multitasking
what's your gripes to Sean Kingston
obviously had the big jet skiing
accident several years ago made a full recovery luckily what's your gripes to Sean Kingston? Obviously, he had the big jet skiing accident several years ago.
He's made a full recovery, luckily.
Okay, what's the problem?
Well, Cam, clearly you have an affinity for J.R. John Rodham,
the producer of both SOS and Suicide, or whatever this song is.
The same producer, the same guy who uses samples that, you know,
obvious kind of samples like sos and and and
benny king uh stand by me jr rodham so clearly you have a hard-on for jr rodham this week and
both of your picks are john rodham productions so just thought i'd let you know did you know that
on purpose did you know that i'm gonna try to verify maybe that true. You know, and that's me just knowing this without,
my fingers have been in camera the whole time.
There's no Googling going on.
I don't need that.
I know who produced these songs.
Are those Google glasses you're wearing, Stu?
No.
So Cam clearly has a certain taste for a certain sound
that comes from a certain producer.
Well, Tainted Love, yeah, Tainted Love.
Why is this a problem?
It's not a problem.
I'm just saying, like, again, this is like a...
I think Sean Kingston qualifies more than Rihanna does
just because I feel like he, to me, was like 14 or 15,
even though you said he was 17 or 18.
Can we stop this nonsense right now?
This is my show.
I'm putting an end to this garbage.
It is teens and tots, tots and teens.
As long as you're 19 or under, you qualify.
I don't want to hear that, oh, my guys are younger than your guys.
At my store, in my window here, we check ID of anybody who looks like they could be over 15.
Yeah, listen, Sean Kingston, great.
I mean, listen, I just expected more out of you,
not these contemporary songs.
I expected you to dig into them.
So again, you just want to hear
eight-year-old singing. Yes.
I think that's her thing.
Why didn't you just say, hey, let's make the topic,
pick the youngest. Because it's Cam's topic.
And it's funny that Cam picked his topic
and his first two choices. This is what he
picked the topic for so he could play Sean Kingston.
As you heard off the top,
this was your idea.
No, it wasn't.
This is your week.
This is your week.
This is your week.
We had a completely different topic.
I was trying to do you a solid
because I thought it was a good topic.
It is a great topic.
It's just shocking
that you've led with Rihanna and Sean Kingston.
This great summer jam.
You've got three.
I'm trying to bring some
levity to this pandemic.
Here's a great feel-good jam.
You've got three shots left.
Okay.
All right. Should we hear the winner
of this round? You ready?
Yes.
We just heard it.
Nope.
Oh my god, give me a break.
I mean, you're right there.
You heard the opening line of their rap.
They're dissing another bad creation coming out of the gate. So the Kid Rap Wars, the first shot is officially fired with this smash hit.
A much bigger hit than you could ever imagine.
Jump by the great Chris Cross who exploded
onto the scene, had kids,
tots and teens wearing their clothing backwards.
Started a whole
sort of, they had a nice run
for a couple years there.
And all off the strength of this
big smash hit song
Jump, which of course
again opens with a rap diss
on another Bad Creation.
Don't try to compare us to another bad little fad.
And there's plenty of more disses that are in this track with regards to Another Bad Creation.
But let's talk about Criss Cross.
There are, now you want to talk about contemporary and trailblazing.
Jump is much like a very modern hit from today's era
because it has 15 writers on the song.
Wow.
But that is because the song sampled so many tongues.
So all of those people who sampled got credit for the song.
Barry Gordy got sampled for this song.
You know what I mean?
Let's talk about Jermaine Dupri.
Jermaine Dupri is the guy who was sort of the Michael Bivens role here.
Jermaine Dupri was a young teenager himself producing tracks,
and he met the Criss Cross guys.
He wrote this song.
Jermaine Dupri wrote the raps.
He wrote the beat, or he made the beat and he put out a crisscross.
Of course,
uh,
this was the,
uh,
this was the fastest selling single in 15 years when it came out and it
stayed on top of the billboard chart for eight weeks.
Wow.
This was number one.
It was a big,
sold over 4 million copies.
It was number one worldwide. And it big, big, big jam. The single sold over 4 million copies. It was number one worldwide, and it even withheld,
when it was number one, it withheld Bohemian Rhapsody,
En Vogue, You're Never Gonna Get It,
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Under the Bridge.
Those are all songs that did not get to number one
because of Criss Cross's Reign of Terror in the summer of 1993.
How about that, guys?
It was a big hit.
Go ahead, Cam.
Honestly, I remember that song vividly.
I think I still know all the words.
It was absolutely a big pop music phenomenon.
One of these poor,
one of these guys is no longer with us.
I can't remember.
Who passed away here in this band.
I can find that out for you, but I do want
to say that according to VH1,
this is
number 75
on their top greatest songs ever,
and number two of all time
on their child stars top ten.
So,
definitely checks all the boxes
as far as credibility goes.
I don't know what Cam's problem is.
I know he liked this song as well.
You cannot deny that.
Wasn't it last week though?
Chris Cross Jump.
You said this song was the same as House of Pain?
No, I said that House of Pain Jump
came out the same time as this.
But they're completely different songs.
But I'm just saying you had two songs
telling you in the chorus to jump, Mike.
Come on.
Oh, yeah.
I just remembered.
You're playing 17-year-old songs from 70 years ago for a song here,
and you're telling me that jump and jump around being on the chart at the same time
is more than a coincidence?
Nothing like whoop.
There it is.
That's what we forgot to address, you know.
Did we ever get like a resolution?
Oh, yeah, we did.
You were wrong.
Everybody likes my version better. Cam, are you able to speak right now? Shake your head if you can't. Okay, we ever get like oh yeah we did you were wrong a resolution everybody likes my version better cam are you able to speak right now shake your head if you can't okay we'll get
back to cam but i just want to know if we have a result from the poll maybe we'll check in later
wait is he checking out some he's like got some other thing going on uh yeah we let him multitask
him and leave a funk permission to multitask i know that crisscross jump is appreciated by
everybody listening. Uh,
and the history of,
of kids doing rap is going to just continue moving forward.
I think it's like,
again,
I'm not,
uh,
I think that's a fantastic,
both of your selections so far,
Stu,
I think were appropriate and great.
I just think the,
uh,
razzing and giving,
giving cam a hard time for picking a couple of 17 year olds.
And I picked the 17 year old as well.
I think that's out of bounds, and that's unfair,
and I think that action needs to stop immediately.
Well, we'll see.
Let's see what your next pick is.
All right, let me kick it out.
Can't stay at home, can't stay at school
Old folks say you're pulling a fool
Down the street, I'm the girl next door
I'm the fox you've been waiting for I went with the classic Cherry bomb Donates love and straights out to
I went with the classic,
the Runaways song, Cherry Bomb.
Joan Jett is probably the most famous member
of the Runaways,
and I believe she wrote this song.
And although I didn't do the homework you did, Stu,
because I don't know,
I just know they are definitely teenagers
when they write and record Cherry Bomb.
I need to do a little Googling to find out how old they were.
What do you think?
I mean, definitely qualifies.
This is the best.
Other than my choices, this is the next best selection we've had so far.
So this was good.
This qualifies.
This checks the boxes.
These are definitely teenagers
and they're definitely doing some groundbreaking shit.
So this is a good example
of an impactful
song for the list and
there was obviously a movie, a sort of
panned movie that came out maybe in the
last 10 years. Not a lot of people liked it.
Some people liked it. I don't know.
But The Runaways. I feel like
there's some Canadian link to that story but I don't remember. No, the Canadian link is you got the wrong arrows. I think it. I don't know. But The Runaways, you know, I feel like there's some Canadian link to that story, but I don't
know.
The Canadian link is you got the wrong arrows.
I think it's I Love Rock and Roll has an arrows.
You killed that poor guy.
Yeah.
In New Jersey or New York or whatever.
And thankfully, you didn't kill the Ottawa arrows.
It was close.
Well, somebody, somebody, somebody keep it.
Call Joan Jett.
Make sure she's.
Oh, God.
We have blood on our hands.
Do you feel guilty ever?
Like we're taking down some great artists here?
Well, that's why I tend to name artists that we could do without.
I'm just kidding.
I'm totally joking.
I would look out for the other guy in Criss Cross.
I would make sure we do a wellness check on him.
I'm just a little bit concerned.
I love that song too. And it shows up,
it is one of those songs that does show up in a lot of like a TV show or a
movie where you need to portray some sort of like teenage girl,
badass or whatever.
Like that's the kind of,
if there's ever like a teenage girl smoking a cig,
this is the song that should be played.
Oh,
absolutely.
Absolutely.
So,
uh,
we'll, uh, yeah, that's Cherry Bomb.
I believe Cam, uh, actually one of his first, uh, romantic encounters was to that song.
Uh, no, that, that, no, that, that, no, that's not true.
Well, Stu, no, I think Stu was there.
Oh, sorry.
Sorry.
I'm thinking of, I'm thinking of Nina Cherry, Buffalo Stance. My bad. Okay. Yeah. That's not true. Well, Stu, no, I think Stu was there. Oh, sorry, sorry. I'm thinking of Nina Cherry, Buffalo Stance.
My bad.
Okay, yeah, that's more like it. Do you guys know who Nina Cherry's brother and father are?
Yeah, yeah.
But Nina Cherry could have been on this list.
Wasn't she 17 when she recorded that song?
So tell us, who's her dad?
Don Cherry.
Don Cherry.
But not the collar guy.
Eagle Eye Cherry.
Right, that's her brother.
Buck Cherry.
Eagle Eye Cherry is Nina Cherry's brother.
Oh yeah, did you guys mention Chuck Berry?
I do apologize.
Wait, Cam, did you say anything about Chris Cross?
No, I didn't.
I just thought it was a personally we we talked
about crisscross i just think it's you know it's a little well when i'm doing like a history of
kids kids and rap sort of byline it's sort of my timeline is sort of uh built a certain way
you know i'm telling you i'm gonna be honest i was so disgusted last week when you suggested that Jump Around by House of Pain and Jump by Criss Cross was basically the same song.
I didn't say it was the same song.
I said that it was more than a coincidence.
I said that it was more than a coincidence that two songs telling you to jump were both in the top five at the same time.
Cam, when you went to the washroom there for a little bit, I called him out on that exact
same thing.
It's still bothering me.
Which, by the way, which may have, and I'm probably wrong about this, this could be just
some more stew hot air, as your listeners like to say sometimes.
But you had jump around and jump crisscross, charting around the same time.
It's possible that's the second time in history that happened because it's possible it is possible that uh pointer sisters jump for my love and van halen jump might have been playing
in the same time as well that's a thoughtful lucid interesting suggestion it might not be
accurate but it's also not what you said last week.
You even said that the two guys from Criss Cross used to be in House of Pain.
Is that more?
You didn't say that. You're going to get yourself in a house of pain if you don't watch yourself, brother.
These are little children, Stu.
Oh.
Little children.
Yeah, unlike the full-grown adults you've been selecting.
Stu, you just said brother, right?
That high school student, Sean Kingston.
Right.
You just did a Hulk Hogan brother, right?
You just dropped one of them.
Yes.
Right?
Yes.
And I just had Brother Jake on Toronto Mic this last week.
Next week.
Yes.
Next week on Toronto Mic'd.
Brother Love?
Well, hold on.
Oh, you ruined my punchline.
But next week on Toronto Biked is Brother Bill.
90s CFNY personality
Brother Bill, who's now going by
his birth name, Neil Morrison.
He lives in White Rock now. We're going to
talk next week. That'll be awesome.
But then when I went to Twitter and said it was like
a brother theme, and I did the Brother Jake
and the Brother Bill,
and I asked aloud. I just asked,
does anyone know what's up with like brother love? Cause brother love loves you. And you
connected me to him via Twitter. And apparently, you know, brother love.
Well, I mean, I know, I know who he is. He's a, he is the executive, uh, he's the executive
producer of WWE SmackDown every week on Fox every Friday night.
And recently he made a cameo back in character as Brother Love on WWE programming.
Whoa.
So maybe I will do that.
Did he have the talk show and stuff?
He didn't have the talk show.
He just made a cameo during a match going on.
What was your favorite talk show?
I was a big Piper's Pit guy.
I know we're going back to that same three-year period.
Brother Love had a show. Roddy Piper had a show. Jake the we're going back to that same three-year period. Brother Love had a show.
Roddy Piper had a show. Jake the Snake had a show.
The Barbershop, remember?
The Barbershop, yep.
Jesse Ventura
and Don Morocco co-hosted The Body Shop.
Did Jimmy Hart have a show?
The Flower Shop with Adrian Adonis.
The Flower Shop.
The Funeral Parlor.
The Funeral Parlor. Yeah, the Funeral Parlor. The lot of shops. The funeral parlor. Funeral parlor.
Yeah, the funeral parlor. The Heartbreak
Hotel. Do they still
have these?
They do. They do. They're not as good.
Did Jimmy Hart have a show?
No, but he was
with Adrian Adonis. They had the flower shop.
Alright, speaking of flowers,
let's kick out Cam's
third jam.
I just like to watch Stu listening to the gym. Is there anything I can do for you, dear? Is there anyone I could call?
No one, thank you, please, madame I ain't lost, just wondering
Round my hometown
Memories of fresh
Round my hometown Memories of Frankish
Around my hometown
Ooh, the people I've met
How the wonders of my world
How the wonders of my world
Melissa, cover your children's ears
because I just want to say,
holy fuck,
can this girl sing?
Honestly, Adele can sing.
Yeah.
This is Adele with the song Hometown Glory.
Oh, it says my internet
connection is unstable. You guys hear me?
I've been watching it.
Unfortunately, we can't
hear you.
Yeah.
I mean, you talk about teenagers who you would never guess I've been watching it. Unfortunately, we can't hear you. Yeah, so, yeah.
I mean, you talk about teenagers who you would never guess were teenagers.
Has anybody ever filled that role more than Adele
who showed up and, you know,
sounded like, you know, a mature artist
even though she was a teenager
so therefore still eligible
for today's Todd's and Teen. And then just to clear, even though she was a teenager so therefore still eligible for based thoughts
and then
just to clear remember the
Big Crit song
Hometown Hero
you guys know Big Crit
no anyway he sampled
that song
which is I enjoyed that one
too but yeah I mean
Adele was I mean mean, most famously,
it's just gonna love this Adele,
her first,
this is from her first album called 19.
So teenager,
you know,
but boy,
she was almost not a teenager.
Very close.
Yeah.
This is like,
this is like,
what has happened,
Kim?
And now it's just like,
he's so bothered by all these talented teens.
You're just like, you are just...
It is ridiculous.
Like, what has happened to you?
You've changed, man.
How have I changed?
We pick a topic.
I don't know, man.
It brings great tunes.
I come prepared.
Very disappointing effort.
You, you, you, you...
This is shocking to me.
I mean, Adele... But Stewie, you have to agree. That's shocking to me. I mean, Adele...
That's a great song.
Best song that we've
heard so far, as far as
quality of best songs.
But I'm saying, and obviously her
talent level supersedes everybody
we've heard so far. She's the number
one so far. Talent.
But when you think of teen stars, Adele
again.
But like her debut
album again.
I get it, but you're like, let's think
of a star and then find a recording they did when they
were 18 in the bathroom and that'll be the song
we pick.
No, because the song was on a meet.
That's ridiculous, Stu.
These are not acts.
These are not acts
that have hung their hat on being teens.
That wasn't the criteria.
Wait till you hear mine.
My last jam, he certainly did.
I think I'm the only one that took this.
I'm thinking this is a runaway.
I could stop playing songs right now, and I already won.
But it's okay.
We could have done tots and tweens.
Would that have been better?
Maybe I just misheard.
And that's what I thought you said.
Well,
this was all in writing.
He's got the receipts.
Cam has the receipts.
On the tweet,
it said sick in brackets.
So I,
I didn't know.
Oh,
come on.
What do you stop?
While we're talking about Adele,
I want to ask you guys about a current event topic
that is raging debates are happening
on talk shows across the country.
Adele recently posted a picture on social media.
It was the first time in a long time.
And she's lost a considerable amount of weight.
And the controversy, as I understand it,
is that people are saying,
good for you, Adele.
You look fantastic.
And people who are curvier are saying, wait for you, Adele, you look fantastic. And people who are curvier
are saying, wait, she didn't look fantastic before. Like, is there some, some reverse
body shaming going on? Do you guys have any opinion on this topic? Are you aware of this?
I will say like, listen, I don't want to step into a mouse, a minefield that is a topic like this,
but I will say if she posted that picture picture then obviously she's proud of whatever progress that she had set for herself or else she wouldn't have been
posting it like that so obviously she worked hard and wanted to be wanted to make improvements
everybody's got shit if you're happy big if you're happy small if you're happy small we don't care
i'm happy if you're happy and if adele is happy then i'm happy i don't need her to be skinny fat
anything she could just be happy and I'm happy.
And it goes about...
Yeah, I was just going to say one thing I like about her.
It's not really related to that, but I mean, it tangentially is.
For an artist that's that massive,
and one of the few artists who still sells hard copy CDs, I believe.
Her album 19, and then her next album, 19,
and then her next album, which I think was 21,
they're all named after her.
Well, she is shocked you didn't pick a song from that
album.
I'm not
going to, no, I'm not even going to touch
that because that's absurd.
I just think it's impressive.
She keeps a pretty low profile.
She posts a photo of herself on the internet,
and that's news, regardless of what the context is,
which is pretty staggering for an artist of her magnitude
in the present day, where, you know,
like we were talking about Rihanna, the teen,
who showed up in her teenage years,
seems like has never really left the public eye in about 15 years.
Adele seems to come and go in the consciousness,
but she seems like she's gone most of the time.
Like we don't hear that much about her, which is, I mean,
neither here nor there.
It's a different approach of managing her career.
Different artists, different artists, different thing,
different marketing, different.
It's a different thing, Adele.
And I think I speak for men everywhere, heterosexual men everywhere.
This will get me in trouble to speak for all of them
with one sentence, which is that pre-weight
loss, Adele was gorgeous.
She's gorgeous now. She was gorgeous
then. I got a lot of time for
Adele.
Like I said,
it's like
it's a sensitive world that we're living in right now.
So no matter what you say, someone's going to find one side or the other side.
You're going to offend somebody no matter what.
You can't make everybody happy.
So you should try to make yourself happy.
We have a woman on the Zoom.
Should we get an opinion, Lieve Fumpka?
Do you want to chime in on the Adele situation?
She kind of pissed me off earlier, so don't really need to hear from her.
Well, she's no Linda, but she's all we have.
Lieve, are you able to speak or no?
Yeah.
What do you think?
Can you compliment Adele on her weight loss,
which clearly she's proud of because she posted this photo,
and she does look great,
and without it offending the the the curvier uh people we love
stew i'm gonna go back on your side and you're gonna this is good yes but i agree with uh stew
yeah see and that's basically how this show works nowadays yeah if you either agree with
stew or you don't agree with stew that's pretty much the that's toronto this show works nowadays if you either agree with Stu or you don't agree with Stu that's pretty much
that's Toronto Mike's show on Friday
there's no in between
I don't remember Stu and I disagree
Stu
you know throughout his life
back to the Edison twin days
Waxman days has been a polarizing figure
Waxman days
not much has changed Waxman was. Not much has changed.
Waxman, he's in, he's out.
He was in, then
who showed Fluffy Ears?
And then he died.
I passed away.
A long time ago.
You're talking about
monkey ears.
I call him Fluffy Ears.
Alright, I've lost track've lost benji plenner
and his brother noah plenner that's the kid who played floppy ears benji plenner they're all
they're grown up now but these are the guys that i used to be up against for parts all the time
they were a powerhouse brother duo they would i mean okay okay here's the thing you get all
all worked up because i bring adele you're talking about this fucking kid who's like eight doing Neil Simon,
like monologues and stuff.
That's a kid.
That is a kid.
That's a kid.
That's a kid.
That's a tie.
With the taste of like a 55-year-old like men.
Like fucking Neil Simon, like Lost in Yonkers.
Lost in Yonkers is great.
And Neil Simon is great.
And Neil Simon's the man.
And if you went to high school in Canada, Lost in Yonkers is great. And Neil Simon is great. And Neil Simon's the man.
And if you went to high school in Canada,
then you definitely went to drama class or drama class,
depending on which territory you live in.
And Neil Simon was part of the curriculum.
Drama, drama, that's a bit like the pasta, pasta debate that we have often on Toronto.
I've decided it's pasta.
Do you want to kick out Stu's a third jam?
Sure.
Okay.
Just waiting for somebody to say yes.
Here we go.
No denying this one.
Listen carefully. this part.
You heard that part right there?
We're going to talk about that part. When I had you to myself I didn't want you around
Those pretty faces always make you stand out in a crowd
All right, we all know this song.
Okay, talk to us about this.
I mean, it's not an eye-rolling song like we all know this song.
We all knew the fucking Rihanna song, and you played that song.
I play what I'm told to play, man.
Tell us.
I'm shutting down Stu Stone.
This is a group.
This is sung by a guy named Bruce Jackson
and his brothers Cliff, Phil, Don, and Lloyd.
Oh, Phil Jackson.
He went on to coach the Bulls.
This is absolutely the Jackson 5, I Want You Back.
Ironically, in my little through line of songs I've been playing,
in the little story that I've been geniusly sort of been crafting for you,
Stu fans out there, you know the bass line of this song.
Da-na-na-na-na-na-na-na.
Down, down, down.
Down, down, down.
You know that part, right?
So the part that goes, da-na-na-na-na-na-na. Down, down, down. Stop right there. Down, down, down, down, down, down. You know that part, right? So the part that goes down, down, down, down.
Stop right there.
Down, down, down.
Stop right there.
Down, down, down.
Criss-cross, jump.
The last song I played samples this song.
The iconic bass line for criss-cross, jump comes from the Jackson 5,
I Want You Back.
So there's a great tie-in right there.
And of course, we all know Michael Jackson went on to be involved
in this category in some appropriate and possibly inappropriate ways.
We're not here to address that.
Am I allowed to play this song? I don't know.
The Jackson 5 we're going to talk about back when things were innocent.
And Michael had his pet rat, Ben, running around the house.
They were from Gary, Indiana.
They've got their consummate stage father, stage mother.
You hear these nightmare stage moms.
Well, their dad invented it and basically had these kids like in the military,
learning how to sing and dance and play their instruments.
And it paid off in a major way.
Jackson 5 exploded onto the scene.
Diana Ross introduced them to the world.
Who's Loving You, Michael sang, stole everybody's heart.
And the Jacksons went on to have a great run,
just as the Jackson 5 before Michael went solo.
And of course, they got back together famously in 1986, I believe,
in 1985 and played at the Exhibition Stadium,
where yours truly was, for the Jackson's Victory Tour.
84, 1984.
I think it was 84 where Michael took his brothers on the road
because he was a real mensch and brought his brothers along
for one more ride.
And that's the lone time that anybody in Toronto,
unless you traveled outside of Toronto,
that's the lone time you would have been able to see
Michael Jackson live in concert in Toronto
would have been at that appearance at Ex live in concert in Toronto would have been at
that appearance at Exhibition Stadium.
Is that true? He did not come back again.
He did not come back again.
And if you saw Michael at that show,
then you're considering yourself Stu.
My mom was there. Maybe you saw her there?
I don't know, but she was there at that show. Her brother
took her. I remember this. I think, was she smoking
weed? Was she smoking weed?
Possibly. I don't know.
I highly doubt it though.
So Cam,
what do you have to say
about Stu's pick?
Yeah,
I just need to check.
Okay,
Stu,
who,
who's the oldest
member of the band?
I think it's Tito.
How old was he
when this song was recorded?
I think Tito is,
oh,
I get what you're saying.
1953.
I get what you're saying here
but Tito is like still about 7 years
younger than Rihanna
that's not true
good question I need to know before I play
my jam I will say though
that there is folklore
and I can attest to this being somebody who was a
child performer as well but
Michael Jackson apparently
they say that he was actually like 11
and said he was 9
it's very possible there was like an El Duque
thing happening there
yeah well it looks like Tito was
probably around 17 when this
came out which means he was obviously younger
you know it seems
like he was around the age you know Rihanna or Sean
Kingston were when they did their song
yeah but I mean I don't think that I ever
led or any human being on earth
is like leading a conversation
about the Jackson 5
with Tito.
I think, you know,
Tito is like the answer
to the who was
the oldest Jackson.
That's pretty much
the scope of the Tito
breakdown here
because it's all about
Michael here.
Michael steals the show
and he's the man.
Okay, so I know that
I now realize
there's a trend here.
I see Stu is actually like, he's got a story going.
It seems to be Tots.
And yeah, Tots who rap.
I know Michael Jackson didn't rap, but it tied in with a rap song.
Also, I said earlier, Another Bad Creation was in the Michael Jackson video as well for Black or White.
Yeah, this is good.
I mean, I do like the thought that's gone into this
and I'm seeing the narrative, Stu. It is appreciated.
I appreciate you, Cam. Thank you.
I love you, buddy.
I don't like it when you two get along. It's more fun
when you guys are... It won't last.
Don't worry about it.
Alright, let me, I like it loud
I'm the man with the box that can rock the crowd
Walking down the street to the hardcore beat
While my JVC vibrates the concrete
I'm sorry if you can't understand
But I need a radio inside my hand it down, to be quite honest with you.
Still love this jam.
Teenaged LL Cool J, Ladies Love Cool James, kicking out
I Can't Live Without My Radio.
It's interesting.
LL Cool J sort of is like a bridge between the uh broken glass everywhere era and
the rakim era it's like he's sort of the bridge because he's still rapping with that same sort
of flow that you're familiar with from the early days of rap but he's got more attitude and edge
in his lyrics and his delivery that sort of leads to the Rakim era, which is modern hip hop,
in my opinion.
So it's interesting.
He is the bridge.
I wouldn't have considered him on this as well.
I'm not going to go in hard on you here because he is a teenager rapping.
But again,
it's like,
I don't think of when I think of LL,
I don't think of this category and it's fine.
I've got,
I'm moving past the fact that you guys are looking at birth certificates and
squeezing as many 17 year olds as you can.
I would say he's one of those artists just cause he's been with us for so
long.
You know,
between his,
his music and his acting career where,
yeah,
you go back in,
you listen to the radio or whatever.
And then it's like,
Oh my God,
he was such a baby when he first showed up.
But at the time I don't think that was the case.
Even when he did,
mama said you knock You Out and stuff,
he was probably like,
what,
21?
Like he was like super young. But I think that by the time that song came out,
I think his rap flow evolved a lot.
Yeah,
because I was like,
what,
his third album or fourth?
Yeah,
I mean,
he's been around.
Yeah,
sorry.
And of course,
now he has Rock the Bells Radio on Sirius XM. And he course now he has rock the bells radio on Sirius XM and,
uh,
he has,
uh,
he's doing real well,
obviously.
Oh,
he's completely sold out.
He was one of the very first kind of battle rapper,
kind of mainstream battle rap kind of guys too.
He would got,
got in plenty of fights,
uh,
battle raps back in the day with cool mode.
Uh,
right.
And I know that he infamously had a big battle in the 90s
with cannabis.
I know Cam was a big cannabis fan.
That's right, yeah.
Also Cam Ron.
You remember Cam Ron?
Yeah.
Of course.
I recently saw
a very interesting interview
with LL Cool J
talking about how much more difficult
his life was
because of the Beastie Boys
when they toured on that first album.
Like, the Beastie Boys,
as you might know, in that first album
they were like this frat boy.
They would tour these places
and fuck shit up.
Then when LL would want to tour the same
places, it was very difficult for him
because of the
Beastie Boys, the trail, the
wake that was left.
Promoters wouldn't want to book it anymore.
They were all lumped
together go ahead i was gonna say def jam you're talking about like def jam records which was
founded with run bmc beastie boys and ll cool j were the three acts that were the def jam records
you know uh rick rubin and russell simmons so if beastie boys went and trashed the place then
def jams calling to book their next act right It's not looking so good on LL.
And I believe that's the only album that Beasties did with Def Jam
was Licensed to Ill, right?
The first one there.
But this guy, LL, who seems like he has been around forever
because I can't remember pre-LL.
Like, I can't remember.
I mean, didn't he get Kennedy Honored
last year?
Him and Rush Limbaugh or something?
It's funny now to look now.
I was a big rap fan in the 80s. If I look now
that you've got mainstream artists
and maybe guys you see on broadcast
TV or whatever. Ice-T
is kind of a mainstream guy.
Ice Cube
with his Daddy I'm Not Home or Daddy I don't even remember anymore. He's a mainstream guy. Ice Cube, his daddy, I'm not home, or daddy,
I don't even remember anymore, but he's like a
mainstream Bob Saget type
man. Oh yeah, LL Cool J for sure.
He was the first guy to do it. Sure.
So it's just interesting. I would say like after
Will Smith had success with
The Fresh Prince, LL Cool J had like
a show like that on like a
shittier channel. Oh, UPN
or something. Yeah, he had his own show. And then he also was that on like a shittier channel. Oh, UPN or something. Yeah.
He had his own show.
And then he also was like doing like,
uh,
uh,
uh,
collaborations with boys to men.
And he was doing,
you know,
he was in the fucking monsters that we discussed last week.
Yeah.
Hey,
do you guys remember like,
I,
I,
there was a time where I'd hear like,
there's a show on UPN,
but I had no idea like what or how to act like this might not apply to Stu
who lived in LA for a while,
but like,
how do you,
how do you,
you in Toronto,
how did we ever see a UPN show?
I feel like it was when Toronto got that,
that first batch of,
uh,
when like TBS and that Boston channel came to Canada.
Cause I remember watching all the things.
WGN Chicago.
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah. There was a, yeah, there was like the three watching all the things. WGN Chicago. Yeah. Right. Yeah.
There was a,
yeah,
there was like the three.
Yeah.
Was it WGN?
KTLA.
So it was the three super stations.
KTLA,
WGN and TBS.
Right.
And you got.
That was a real game changer,
by the way,
when those stations came to Canada,
I must say.
Like I remembered it cause now suddenly Chicago Cubs games were on all the
time.
That was WGN.
Yeah.
And also the Andy, the Andy Griffith show was always on.
And the Braves games were on TBS.
It was like all of a sudden.
Yeah, WCW.
That's how we saw Ric Flair.
That's right.
Yeah.
Wow.
Yeah, because like WWF was the only game in town on Canadian television.
Which, by the way, is the reason, as you know, the gap was short for me.
But I never knew these other wrestling leagues. Like I would hear about Ric Flair and wonder, who the hell is the reason as you know i have the three the gap was short for me but i never knew
these other wrestling leagues like i would hear about rick flair and wonder who the hell is this
guy like i only knew those wwf guys because i didn't i couldn't see him on my tv you know what
i mean i needed red uh red what's his name i almost called him red horner billy red lion
don't you dare miss it yeah from hamilton uh miss it. Yeah, from Hamilton. Oh, speaking of Hamilton,
guess who's going to be on Toronto Mike next week?
You're not going to guess.
Speaking of Hamilton.
Oh, no, I know.
What's his name?
Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Close.
Daniel Lanois.
That's a good guess,
because at least you're thinking Hamilton Somebody from
Hamilton Tiger Cats
Billy Van, no Billy Van's no longer
With us, who's on, the answer is
Red Green himself, Steve Smith
Oh
Didn't he retire
Recently or he is about to retire
Maybe COVID shut down his retirement tour
And he has to delay it.
I don't know.
Tune in to Toronto Mike to find out
because I'm going to find out.
That's a Tuesday.
You should mention to him.
You should mention to him
and he might be surprised to know this
or maybe he's not surprised.
But, you know, when people,
a lot of times when I'm with,
in the States with American friends
or whatever, just talking
and they say, oh, you're from Canada.
A lot of them bring up the Red Green show.
Somehow they know it.
I don't even know what channel it would have been on
for them to see it, but they know it.
PBS, I think.
I think so.
You're right because I had Jeff Lumby on the show
and Lumby was a character.
Yeah, big in the States, but I thought it was PBS.
I could be wrong.
It's like Red Green or Corner Gas
or stuff that you don't expect people to be watching
over there, but they do. You know who recorded the Red Green or Corner Gas or stuff that you don't expect people to be watching over there,
but they do. You know who recorded the theme
song for Corner Gas?
Buck Owens.
Pat Benatar. I saw on Twitter
today, somebody tweeted that whenever someone
says, you know who I just ran into, they always
answer Robert Plant. That's their
go-to answer every time someone says
Robert Plant or Robert Palmer?
Robert Plant is the answer.
I can't remember what I said.
Craig Northey from The Odds. I should have asked Leva.
She's a big fan of the
Trans-Canada Highwaymen. I know we've talked
about that. I collected them all and Craig Northey
did the theme song for...
Okay, so enough about The Odds.
Great band though. Ties in
nicely with Kids in the Hall too. Let's kick out
the fourth jam from Cam
Gordon.
Alright.
This is Dinky Dobson? No, but good guess. I think it's a general era, but it's definitely Canadian.
I'll break it down because I know you guys want to talk,
but I will say, hearing it now, Cam,
thank you for picking it.
It was always a guilty pleasure for me. I always liked it.
Yeah, so this is the band Serial Joe from out of Newmarket, Ontario,
the home of Glass Tiger and just north of where Stu and I grew up.
And the song's called Mistake.
So this was a pretty sizable Much Music hit, from what I recall.
Indeed.
Yeah, the singer of this band was a young man.
His name was Ryan Dennis.
Most of us became familiar with young Ryan Dennis.
God, he was probably like 12 or 13, so hopefully Stu, he's okay with that, his age.
Most of us saw him first when he was in the video for Superman's Dead by Our Lady Peace.
There's kind of the little kid in his sort of post-apocalyptic bedroom being all angsty.
That was young Ryan Dennis in sort of years before Serial Joe showed up.
Well, hopefully it wasn't too many years before Serial Joe showed up because then he'd be too
old to be on this list how many years are we talking about well we're talking you know this
song here this came out in 1999 and that late wow yeah I mean he had another video on Much Music
called Skid Row that was even more sort of like grade school-ish from
what i recall um i feel like skid row and that song uh remember that bang gob had those videos
of course like vancouver band i think yes yeah like all that sort of stuff um even though it's
a very different type of music so yeah this album came out in 1999 uh the the album was called face down
um and yeah like again like i feel like this was all over much music in cfny i saw these guys at
an edge fest at molson park in barry like classic edge fest type band um also interestingly serial band. Also, interestingly, Serial Joe played at Woodstock 1999,
which is kind of bizarre
in retrospect. They were apparently in some
side tent alongside
other Canadian talent, including
Our Lady Peace and Alanis Morissette
and our favorite...
Wasn't the Tragically Hip there? The Tragically Hip.
What's that? Yeah, I was going to say, I think the Tragically
Hip played at Woodstock 99.
That's right, but somehow Serial Joe
got booked. It's amazing
because they weren't really around that long.
They broke up shortly after this album
came out a couple of years.
You don't want to confuse
Serial Joe with the Moffats.
That's right.
Yeah, I mean, the Moffats could have been
a fine choice for this.
So yeah, like Ryan Dennis
when this came out was only
I mean
when he recorded it I mean he probably looked older
than he was
because he would have been he's born in 1984
how old was he
okay so born in 1984
okay fair enough
there's no debate here he qualifies
yeah he was probably 14 when this was recorded.
But definitely has that sort of post-grunge sound
that was very popular during our age
and post-teen years back in the 90s.
Thank you, Cam, for somehow tying this together
with an early staple of the Pandemic Fridays episodes,
Mr. Jeremy Taggart.
I know, yeah.
Stu, have you and Taggart been in touch at all?
Well, we were planning on having a social distance hang,
just working it out.
But as far as that last song goes,
I'm not familiar with it,
so I can't speak on it.
Was this your L.A. years?
I guess.
And that one missed me.
Yeah, that would explain it.
It did have a distinctively Canadian rock sound to it that was unmistakable.
So I was happy to at least be able to pinpoint that.
Happy to hear that Newmarket blessing the charts this week.
Yeah.
So, and again, one more fun fact about Ryan Dennis.
He actually went to Unionville High School.
Again, not too far from where I grew up.
Yeah, that's where I went to the one-day withdrawal gifted program
with William Shestell.
Oh, William.
Yeah, where Mr. Albury taught us.
I don't know if that's a fun fact.
I would imagine that Ryan Dennis wouldn't have been in your class.
Not in our cohort.
Myself and William were well gone by the time.
I would hope so.
Otherwise, there would be some cause for concern.
Yeah, on the 14-year track.
All right.
Let's kick out Stew Stone's fourth jam.
Now, wait a minute. Before you hit it. Before you hit it. Oh, no, no. Pause out Stew Stone's fourth jam. Now, wait a minute.
Before you hit it, before you hit it.
Oh, no, no.
Pause, pause, pause, please.
Yes, sir.
Now, we've heard from another bad creation,
and we've heard from Chris Cross.
Kid rap in 1991 to 1993 dominating the chart.
So Canada naturally has to answer with a Canadian version of that.
And that's what we've got right here with my next entry.
Go ahead.
Come on, y'all.
Too bad to be true.
Let's bust this, too.
One, two, three. Wow.
I think they did come up.
Yeah.
They're never far from the top of of your mind i find uh this is uh
stew introduce uh not to be confused with abc this is tbtbt too bad to be true
canadian hip-hop group based in toronto ontario best known for this song, One Track Mind, which get ready for this. Are you sitting down?
Won the Juno Award for the rap recording of the year that year.
This was the Canadian rap song of the year at the 1994 Juno Awards.
I feel like that could have gone to Kish or something.
I don't know.
That's surprising to me.
A year later, they had a second single that I know is a favorite of Cam's
where they said, you got to get down to it.
You got to put your mind to it.
It's like fun summer jams.
Like, you know, this is Cam's answer to another bad creation.
We may there may be a legacy going here because the head rapper,
I guess we can call him Jeremy Robinson, has two
sons who are currently pursuing a
career in Canadian rap themselves.
So we may have a second generation
rap group spawning
from the seeds of TBTBT.
What are their names?
Do they have... Yes, they do as a
matter of fact. They have
names and their names are Casper
TNG and K-Money.
Woo!
K-Money.
Well, is K-Money kind of a big deal?
Like, that sounds familiar.
He could be.
Okay.
But, yeah, this is...
Yeah, don't confuse K-Money with chaos.
Yeah, of course.
I'm glad this is on the internet.
This is Canadian CanCon.
This is more towards my theme of... This is Canadian CanCon. This is my theme.
There's no CanCon regulations here.
But if I...
I feel like...
This is the era.
Tell me, when was Sugar Jones a big hit?
That was like...
Later?
Because they were like a reality show band, right?
Yeah, I think they were manufactured.
But were they teenagers?
Why do I think Sugar Jones might have been?
I feel like they were probably in their early 20s.
They were, I think, from the...
Which is probably why you guys are confusing them for teens,
because you guys have been confusing people in their 20s.
Do you guys remember a band called the Macaulay Boys?
No.
Macaulay Boys?
They were like an R&B vocal group from Toronto,
I think like around the same era.
Are they like sort of in that Charles and Eddie era?
Yeah, a little bit from whatever call.
I feel like they were also Juno Award nominated,
much like TBTBT.
The fact that TBTBT won the rap recording of the year that year for this entry would you show us how we've come a long way charles and eddie is what
i lied to you right yes great would we be able to google this and find out the nominees the like
who did tbtbt tbtbt who did they beat out i personally i personally wouldn't
be able to do that because uh much like my uh my uh al waxman experience i am off book when i do
this show and i'm spouting from the dome but uh if uh you know cam wants to wiggle his fingers
around you can probably find out they want they went in 1994 again to Sue's Point. One track line.
The other nominees were Be Cool, Got to Get Over.
An artist has definitely come up.
Devin, Call the Cops.
Probably from the album Keep It Slammin'.
An artist, again, we've talked about,
shockingly doesn't have a Wikipedia page,
which is a travesty.
Rumble, Safe, I'd argue. I'm page, which is a travesty. Rumble,
Safe, I'd argue. I'm not sure that's a... We talk about Rumble a lot.
Safe lost to this song.
Come follow me. Are you kidding? Are you
fucking kidding me? One of my favorite songs of all
time is Rumble's Safe.
Well, actually, Rumble's in fucking
red because he doesn't have a... Holy shit.
You know, every time I have
a DJ Ron Nelson or a Mishi Mi or a Kish, every time I have a DJ Ron Nelson or a Mishy Me
or a Kish, every time I have a maestro, if I have a Farley
Flex on this program, I ask them straight out
on the recording. I say, how do I get in touch with
Rumble? Where is Rumble? I want Rumble on the
program. What about Darren Rumble?
Anyway, the fifth nominee was something called Split
Personality. That's the band with Try and Stop Us.
And then the next year was actually won by Ghetto Concept
who had a good run. And also, this was a good song. I'd give this a
spin. What?
What did you do?
What?
Freaks of Reality, Chilachi Lachilo.
Do you remember freaks of reality chelachi lachi lo do you remember that that was that was nominated the next year so yeah i mean definitely when it went up and then
you started seeing people like uh socrates and rascals and carnell uh choclair started coming
in the equation did you say choclair? Again, it's drama.
Potato, potato.
Yeah.
All right, Stu, before we wind down,
we only have a few more jams to go.
Here's a little taste of what lost to TBTBT.
You could free my mind
Just as long as my baby's safe from harm
No, follow me
I went to a dance, don't buy chest I lay with Miss Fuzz and my light steel Yeah, this is much better.
What? Are you fucking kidding me?
This is one of the greatest songs in the history of English recordings.
And you know what?
I would have put him on my list
because I believe he was only 18 and a half when he recorded this.
But I went with TBTBT instead because they're actually kids performing.
Well, also, is this a rap song?
How is this a rap song?
Well, he's technically rapping, but he's speaking.
Yeah, he's rapping.
It's a Jamaican rap, an island rap.
He's got a bit of a Patois in there.
But Mishimi made that pretty famous.
He's rapping, just in another language.
Oh, by the way, guess who's joining us? This is
very exciting that we get to a
late joiner to our Zoom
call, and we'll say
hi to him, and he can hear the last three jams.
I want to say Mishimi would have been a very
appropriate choice for this
category.
Welcome to the
program, Ian
Service.
Hey, great to be here.
You're late.
Go get a tardy slip from the principal.
Okay.
All right.
Okay, so you're coming late,
so I don't have time to bring you up to speed on everything,
but we're kicking out songs by Tots or Teens.
It's been very heated.
Stu doesn't like it when Cam and I kick out
a song by a teenager.
He wants us to stick to the tots.
But we have,
what do we have left?
We have one jam left.
No, I have two jams left
and Cam and Stu have one jam left,
but Stu has a bonus jam.
But let's kick out
my second last jam. Bye. There's no bathroom and there is no sink.
The water out of the tap is very hard to drink.
Very hard to drink. I'll bring it back up for the big chorus there.
But of course,
it's building up again, guys.
I'm sorry. You notice how my my songs I linger longer on my jams
hold on hold on
I'll be right with you
Australia silver chair
tomorrow frog stump correctamundo Australia Silverchair, Tomorrow.
Frog Stomp.
Correctamundo.
What say you about my fourth selection?
This is your best choice so far.
This is a great song.
There's nobody who is of a certain age
is going to say that this is not a good song
this is a great song and I would say during like the
peak era in my opinion
and I might get shit from you and your audience
but the peak era of CFNY
would have been in the
mid to late 90s
oh you are going to get shit but not from me
Silverchair is definitely
the teen
band entry into the
grunge category.
With the success of Stone Tummel Pilots and Pearl Jam
and Nirvana, of course there needed to be a teen band
that came in.
Even if I'm not that familiar with any other
song in Silverchair's, I'm sure I've heard
other stuff, but this is the one that I think of
and no shame.
The song still bangs and it's a great
song. I love it. They had a few hits, definitely a few hits, including one of them. This is the song still bangs and it's a great song i love it yeah they had a few hits
definitely a few hits including uh yeah this is the one i remember yeah this is the big one of
course i saw again i saw these guys at edge fest at molson park and barry too and they were i think
i don't know they were 17 or something 16 17 and uh like you said i know you're gonna get a lot of
blowback from the older set who will tell you the David Marsden era of CFNY.
Well, it's a different thing.
It's a different thing.
Okay.
Cause it's like CFNY when it became like the grunge channel.
That's what I'm talking about.
1991 or whatever.
That would have been.
Okay.
So maybe I'm, maybe I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm remembering wrong as far as when that era started.
But CFNY went from sort of a alternate rock to like alternative grunge.
Yeah. Yeah. No, I would say it's 91. They decide we're going alternate rock to like alternative grunge. Yeah, yeah.
I would say in 91 they decided we're going to go hard on this grunge sound.
And I personally, as a teenager at the time, loved it.
So I was a big fan of all that shit.
Yeah, so I listened to it too.
We all did.
So my point is this was the teenage act of all – the consummate teenage act.
Kim, what say you?
teenage act uh kim would say you actually you know what i the uh in between the the pre-chorus and the chorus that like breakdown that's a pretty cool part it almost be a beatles-esque
go ahead gam i feel like people kept this band a lot of slack because they were so young um
you know i feel like if this is a bunch of slack because they were so young.
You know,
I feel like if this is a bunch of 30 year old guys,
like they would have gotten torn to shreds,
but because they were a bunch of 30 year old guys,
you would have picked this.
They would have been,
they would have been Creed.
I think if they were,
they would have been Creed.
Yeah.
A few years in advance,
but yeah, I don't know.
Like this,
this is not Cam Style.
It's a good choice for the list.
Silverchair is never my cup of tea
or pint of Fosters or whatever.
Yeah, I mean, again, one of these bands,
I feel like we don't hear this band much anymore.
I know they went and they had that second album
that had the anthem
for the year 2000. Yes, that's correct.
And there was a song with a woman's
name in the title that was a big jam
from the Frog Stomp CD.
Yeah, I want to say like
Anna or something. Yeah, Anna's song
or something. Anna's song.
I was going to say Anna's a speed freak.
No, that's Anna's.
I'm going to say Anna's a speed freak. No, that's Anna. I'm going to have a moment.
I think this is a great choice for the list,
even though I'm not a fan of this song
or this band.
I mean, you think about teenagers playing.
I mean, it's a nice complimentary piece
to Serial Joe, I'll say that.
And perhaps Serial Joe
was even influenced by Silverchair.
I wonder what song
I'm thinking of.
But there was this,
I know that
Peer Massacre,
maybe,
I thought there was a song.
Peer Massacre, yeah.
Yeah.
There was a song
called Cemetery.
That was more like
sort of a ballad,
well, not really a ballad,
more like a dirge
of sorts.
What the hell
am I thinking of
with the woman's name in it?
I think it was called Anna's Song. Maybe it was from a different
CD though. Okay, because it's not on
Frog Stomp. I don't see it here on Frog Stomp.
But hold on. This is
us Googling on the fly here
and failing miserably. Okay. Can we
hear? I want to hear a little more of his
sexy voice.
Am I allowed to say that? Of course I can. No.
That is actually crazy. How do you know what I'm talking about? How do you know what I'm talking about?? Am I allowed to say that? Of course I can. No, that is actually crazy.
How do you know what I'm talking about?
How do you know what I'm talking about?
No, I'm talking about Ian Service.
Oh, okay. I thought you were talking about Silverchair.
Me? I thought you were talking about Silverchair.
No, Ian, what do you think?
I'm going to just go to Lim and say I think that's your kind of jam tomorrow.
I was singing along.
I actually got a message from my wife.
Why are you caterwauling? there you go oh man okay well that actually is a big answer right there we just got
some information there for all of you uh singles listening to the show ian off the market tim
married back off yep sorry sorry yeah that's too bad and a song by the way open fire in parentheses is is the name of the song
we're uh thinking of here uh that could be a theme for you know songs with uh where their title has
parentheses actually whoop there it is would be a good whoop there it is i think is a good example
it's whooping i think that's that's right yeah okay here's what we're going to do. I'm going to recap for Ian's service.
I'm going to recap the cam jams
before we kick out his final one.
So Rihanna's SOS,
so he picked out a Rihanna song,
which upset Stu.
Then he kicked out Sean Kingston's
Beautiful Girls, which upset Stu.
And then he kicked out Adele's
Hometown Glory,
which is a beautiful song, but I think
it pissed off Stu. And then
he kicked out Serial Joe's
Mistake, which did not piss off
Stu, but Stu's Pleading
Ignorance. This was his L.A.
era. And of course,
Serial Joe was a Canadian phenomenon,
so he didn't hear any Serial Joe. So,
this is Cam's final
jam.
Finally,
finally shut it down.
You want fucking little kids like this kid was like three. And he's French.
Yes.
And this was a monster hit.
And I only say that because it was played all the time on Top 40 Radio 640.
Tarzan Dan.
Yeah.
So this is Jordy, a French toddler.
I'll dig this up here
while you're digging that up
can I just say
my name is Jordi, I am 5 and I'm small
that's his lyrics
right
he's bilingual
he had to do it in two languages right
I don't know the version you're playing
the version you're playing doesn't sound like uh the version that uh was on dominated the hog am640
so jordy was five years old when this song came out so again this is a a french artist
it's so tough to be a baby
it's hard to be a baby it's so tough to be a baby. Yeah, so this song also could have been
on our non-American,
non-Canadian, non-UK
jams because Jordy and,
assumedly, his parents, maybe he lives alone.
I don't know.
Yeah, this came out in
1992 when he was merely five
years old. I don't know.
Would you guys say...
I don't even really think this is a novelty
song because it was like a legit top
40 hit.
It's so tough to be a baby.
It's as appropriate as a song
with monks or whatever.
Or like...
This is clearly like a gimmick.
This is like a YouTube video before YouTube.
This is like the crazy frog.
She's a meme.
You know, this is...
Who's that, Ian?
It's so tough to be a baby.
It's like pre-memes.
Yeah, so there's actually an interesting backstory.
And Stu, you might appreciate this
as a former child actor yourself.
So Jordy's parents were taking him
to do some auditions for some uh tv commercials about diapers and there's a line in one of these
commercials hard hard to be wet and his father his name is claude um had the idea of using that
line hard hard to be wet and putting some dance beats in it. Why he came up with that idea, we'll never know.
But obviously the lyrics change
into something that proves a bit
less
diaper-based, I suppose.
He laughed all the way to the bank, that
Claude.
Jordy has an interesting, he's also in the Guinness Book of
World Records, is the youngest singer ever
to have reached number one on a singles chart.
Wow.
He beat in France in October of 1992,
which was also when Stu and I were hosting Overcome.
But it only went to number one in France.
It wasn't like a USA number one hit.
Well, Billboard Hot 100, it was number 58.
So it charted.
Just making sure that Mike is taken care of.
But it did go to number one on a bunch of other countries,
including Belgium, Greece, Italy.
Anywhere where there's like anyone whose flag is hanging in Tim's basement.
Okay.
I think the timelines are adding up here.
I think Lieve Fumke was living in the Netherlands at this time.
I'm not sure.
Was this a big jam?
Is she possibly, is she the mother of Jordi, maybe?
Are you the mother of Jordi?
That would be,
that would be a very fun fact
if we find out now.
Levi Femke's son is Jordi.
It's so tough to be a baby.
Listen, when Levi Femke is your mom,
it is so tough to be a baby.
She's, you know.
All the powdered milk.
She's very busy.
It's all that fucking powdered milk, Levi.
She's giving you powder.
She's not,
she's not serving you from the tap.
That's powdered milk.
And I don't think listeners know what we're talking about
because that was before I pressed record that we learned
Levi Femke was raised with powdered milk.
I have one final
quiz for you guys.
What movie was this featured in?
Look Who's Talking.
That's a good guess.
It has to be something like that.
Look Who's Talking 2.
Bebe's Kids. You're getting that. Look Who's Talking 2. Bebe's Kids.
You're getting there.
Look Who's Talking Now.
Yes.
The third and final installment of the Look Who's Talking Now trilogy.
I think the gimmick with this is the dog started talking.
Ironically, that Look Who's Talking series,
which featured both Bruce Willis and John Travolta.
Yes, I know where you're going with this.
Both of them ended up being huge stars a few years later, thanks to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.
Did you guys know who voiced these two dogs in this movie?
No.
John Lovitz?
No, Danny DeVito and Diane.
Roseanne Barr.
Academy Award winner, Diane Keaton, if you can believe.
I like Diane Keaton.
I mean, Travolta, if I can,
I believe that this is what rescues Travolta from his spiral.
The reason we have that joke on The Simpsons with the waiter
and the guy, they go to them,
you look like John Travolta.
And he goes, yeah, looks like.
Like that whole joke exists because Travolta was nothing.
But look who's talking.
That was a number one movie.
That was number one.
Yeah, but that's not what launched.
I mean, that was, I guess, but Pul but pulp fiction is what really made him pop again he was making 20 million
a movie after pulp fiction happened does does he does he cast i know this is what tarantino does
i do the same thing i take washed up old uh broadcast i wouldn't use the word washed up
because quentin tarantino of course famously worked at a video store and he was a fan of uh
of 1970s cinema.
So the people he grew up on, his heroes, he put them all in his movies.
Travolta, what's her name, and Jackie Brown.
You know what I'm talking about.
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, of course.
Pam Greer.
And Robert Forrester was in that movie, too.
There's 70 stars that were dusted off.
Oh, yeah,
absolutely.
We love them.
I think this category...
Did we not?
Yes, we did.
This category right here
was picked
specifically
because Cam
quietly referenced
Geordie is so tough
to be a baby
a few weeks ago.
That is quite possible.
This is,
you know,
when we picked this category,
without naming the song,
when we had our exchange,
I was like, Kim, don't let me down.
At the very end, I knew
that he was going to come with this, and so he's redeemed
himself completely, because the whole
reason this category exists is because
Jordi is five and small, and
it's so tough to be a baby. He is a
tot. He is a tot.
At the very end, I'm hoping we take a moment before we
say goodbye to everybody to just talk about some of the notable omissions.
There are some glaring omissions because sometimes I think we think someone
else will pick it or we just didn't like it or whatever,
but we'll,
we'll talk about that.
So for Ian's sake,
I'm going to tell Ian that cause I'm about to kick out the final jam from
a stew stone.
Although there might be a bonus jam at the end.
Who knows?
I don't want to tell you for sure,
but Aisha,
another bad creations, Aisha, another bad creation.
Aisha, cause you got the groove that's in your heart. That was his first jam.
Chris Cross' Jump was
the second Stu Stone jam. The Jackson
Five, I Want You Back.
And TBTBT,
One Track Mind
was Stu Stone's. Yeah, all of those
songs sort of tied together. You might
not be familiar with that last song, but you might want to go and check it out. It won the Juno Award. Well, all of those songs sort of tied together. You might not be familiar with that last song,
but you might want to go and check it out.
It won the Juno Award for Best Rap Recording in 1994.
It beat Rumble Safe, one of my favorite songs of all time.
I'm so angry.
I'm so angry.
I'm going to talk to the people behind the Junos about this.
Maybe we can fix that in retrospect.
All right. the people behind the G knows about this. Maybe we can fix that in retrospect. Okay.
All right.
This is a,
okay.
So I've been sort of doing these kid rap kind of songs. And so this sort of fits in with the daddy rumble.
The song you're about to hear is,
was released and recorded in 1982 by a bunch of kids went to number one in the
UK,
top 10 in the U S 5 million records sold.
And let's,
let's just jam out my final
kid bop. Music and some red food of love Sounds to really make you rub and scrub
I said
Pass the dutchie pan the left hand side
Pass the dutchie pan the left hand side
It a go bon
Give me the music make me jump and run
It a go done
Give me the music make me jump and run
It was a cool and lonely breezy afternoon Pass the dutchie, a line we've all probably uttered many, many times
when we're at like a Tim Hortons or something and you're enjoying some pastries.
Talk to us, Stu.
Cam, are you familiar with this jam yeah he's putting his thumb up right there he's he's super familiar
well it's uh by a group called musical youth uh who uh you know they uh were definitely a group
of kids this like i said the song song propelled them into superstardom.
As well,
though, this is a kind of
a bittersweet story of success
for them because as much as
the song went on to
sell 5 million copies and
launch them into superstardom, they didn't
make any money on the song.
And subsequently, lawsuits would
go on in the future uh of course
this song passed the duchy the word it is a song about duchies is a baked good as you were as as
as you're referring to it's also people who are dutch but uh you're passing the duchy it is not
about marijuana as one might think that it is however yeah i thought it was there is a probably
a reason why you're wondering,
like, why was there lawsuits over this song?
Like, how is it that
they didn't make any money
on this song?
Well, interestingly enough,
Stu's Mind Blow of the Week,
as I seem to be
blowing people's minds
with my number one pick,
what would you do
if I told you
that this song
didn't make them money
because it is a cover song?
Get the F out.
I don't want to upset our...
And I have just been...
By the great Our Lady Peace drummer
to keep unveiling songs we didn't know were covers
when you didn't ask for them.
I almost wish you didn't.
I almost wish...
Actually...
Yeah, is a cover.
Can you play...
You want to play it?
Yeah, I'm surprised you blew the wads so early
to borrow a Great Champ episode punchline
because I was going to just play.
We've been on the air for five hours already.
I'm hoping people, you know,
they're still with us. so i i hit a hit song by a group called the mighty diamonds this song was in fact about passing a
joint around called past the coochie to the left-hand side they changed the
lyric for the kids to do past the dutchie and made it sort of a not drug
song even though what's a dutchie like is it the pastry that she is a pastry
yes it's a food a song about being hungry and wanting food.
This song is about...
Are you able to speak?
Can you tell us, as a representative of the Netherlands,
can you tell us, are duchies popular in the Netherlands?
I've never seen a duchy in the Netherlands,
only at Tim Hortons.
Yeah.
Wow.
So this is a Jamaican song, so maybe it's a Jamaican thing.
But pass the coochie to the left-hand side.
So obviously, musical youth, they filed this lawsuit many years later.
We sold five million records.
Where's our money?
They're saying, no, ours is original.
Ours is past the duchy.
And the judge disagreed with them.
They lost.
They never made any money from their loan.
And it was a cover.
So there you go, guys.
Past the Dutchie to the left-hand side.
Wow.
Past the fucking Dutchie to the left-hand side.
Not the big takeaway.
The big fun fact, actually, I think, from this episode is that Dutchies are not
common in the Netherlands, where
the Dutch are. Well,
I mean, Foster's is not actually beer in Australia.
Yes, it is. I saw it in
Crocodile Dundee. Yeah, but they don't, yeah,
exactly. That's not a knife.
Are you being a bit,
like, that is a popular beer. No, no, no. First of all,
in Australia, they don't have shrimp on
the barbie either. They don't even call it shrimp in australia they call it prawn there's no shrimp on the barbie
okay but they do drink the they do drink no they do not sure they do no they do not foster's beer
is like an american fucking gimmick yeah that that is true there is no there's no foster's
beer in austral. It is bullshit.
And they hired Paul Hogan to sell beer and it worked. Wow.
Okay, that's shocking to me. Almost as
shocking as I see that Ian Service
has covered up the
Pink Panther fiberglass backdrop.
It has a flag of England.
Are you of English
descent, Ian?
Yeah, my grandma came in
into Nova Scotia, straight from England.
And we had
your average
3pm happy hour
and we were supposed to wear a jersey.
Oh!
Is that where you were? Is that why you were late?
Yeah, I had to
go drink with co-workers.
Wow! Okay, I thought maybe the Euro was going on.
The Euro Cup. I wasn't sure. Ian maybe the Euro was going on, the Euro Cup.
I wasn't sure.
I don't know.
Ian's got a pretty nice smile
for someone from England.
That's another great Simpsons joke,
the great book of British smiles.
Lisa needs braces.
Dental plan.
Okay, great jams stew stone. Nowan for your purpose for your sake i'm
going to tell you betty wright who passed away last week we lost betty wright she had a great
uh a great jam that i played called cleanup woman the runaways joan jets the most famous person from
the runaways had cherry bomb ll cool j that if you didn't know, stands for Ladies Love Cool James.
I've told my firstborn that many, many times.
I kicked out radio.
Silver Chairs Tomorrow.
You heard that.
You were here.
And I'm going to close with a jam from a man who just turned 70 years old.
Living legend.
Let's do it. Wow. Hey, just a little bit louder. Clap your hands just a little bit louder.
Wow.
Kind of like the Cupid Shuffle kind of samples that part.
Yeah.
This is a big time jam that was sampled all over the place.
He was 12 years old,
knowing as little Stevie Wonder,
when this jam went to number one
on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
It's called Fingertips Part 2.
And it's classic.
It's great.
And when I think of tots and teens with big hit songs,
I think of Little Stevie Wonder, who just turned 70 years young.
There's so many things that I could say about this song
because I, too, picked it on my list.
And it's like the consummate song in the category because it launched...
This is crazy, okay?
Stevie Wonder was actually...
Little Stevie Wonder was brought up on stage to showcase that he could play the harmonica and the bongos for this song.
This is actually an edit of just a jam session that ended up being called Fingertips Part 2 because they
just cut Stevie's portion
and made it into a single. This kid
came on the stage and he stole the show with his
bravado and his talent and the fact
that he was obviously blind.
It's just
a remarkable talent. Of course, he
went on to play every instrument and the keys
and the
organ or whatever you want to call it.
But this is,
this is the,
this is the introduction of Stevie wonder to the world.
And it's pretty,
it's pretty special because he is,
he's the man.
Yeah,
I know.
And it's like,
you know,
you think of Stevie wonder as the,
the concept at seventies music.
I don't know how many number one albums he had in a row. He had this
run, this imperial period
where he could do no wrong and he was
everything. But look, we're going back
to I think early 60s with this jam.
Well, you know, this song is
so
historic in itself, this recording, and I'm
sure Cam is going to be really shocked to learn this.
But you know who's playing the drums
on this song?
Marvin Gaye is the drummer right now. What we're listening to right now is Marvin Gaye playing the drums.
That's a fun fact.
So that is a very fun fact.
Stevie Wonder could have arguably been picked a couple times
during Pandemic Fridays.
We did 70 stars with 80 hits.
He could have been there with...
I just called to say I love you.
He could have been there with Neutron, or say i love you he could have been there with neutron or uh
sorry uh uh part-time lovers uh of course uh we did sellout songs some people might argue i just
called to say i love you was a bit of a sellout of stevie wonder's style uh but uh but you know
here he is on the tots and teens playlist little stevie wonder, what do you want to say about
Little Stevie Wonder there?
I think he's not quite as little
as Geordie, but you know...
That's true.
Although Stevie was the youngest person to ever
go to number one.
Stevie was more...
He's a fine choice. It'd be interesting
to throw all the artists together and see
who was the youngest, who was the oldest. I believe that cam would have the youngest and the oldest right
adele right so well i i don't know we're got to check tito uh some some glaring potential
omissions anybody who's ever been uh 17 and recorded a song but uh you know tiffany could
have easily been on this oh like well so many have easily been on this list. Oh, like so many.
Debbie Gibson should have been on this list maybe.
The New Kids on the Block could have been on this list.
It sounds like Britney Spears could have been on it.
Britney Spears, Timmy T, Tommy Page.
That's true.
You know, you could have had Minuto could have been on this list.
There's all sorts of.
I'm trying to think of other like teen rock bands.
Well, you know what we missed?
We missed Hanson. Hanson should have been on this list. I mean, that's... I'm trying to think of other teen rock bands. Well, you know what we missed? We missed Hanson.
Hanson should have been on this list.
That's what I'm saying.
So Cam and Mike sort of wasted these choices
with Rihanna and Adele
when they could have really capitalized on the category
by playing these acts that we're naming.
I have a fun fact.
Timmy T, Tommy Page.
Also, Tommy Page is no longer with us.
I believe he...
Did he pass on?
I'm thinking about taking his own life. I believe Gerardo Did he pass on? I think he might have taken his own life.
I believe Gerardo may have been qualified for this list.
Is that Rico Suave?
Let's stop it.
The leaders of the new school.
Oh, new edition.
We never kicked out a new edition.
New edition.
Glaring omission.
The boys.
I don't know if you remember the boys.
What about those two Mormons?
The Mormon brother and sister.
Apple.
Oh, who are they again?
One bad Apple spoils the whole bunch.
The Osmonds.
I know.
Osmonds.
The fucking Osmonds.
Donnie and Marie Osmonds.
We already kicked out a Donnie Osmond jam recently.
The Brady Bunch.
All of those like TV, 70s TV show, like there was a Partridge Family jam.
I actually am quite shocked
that Tiffany didn't get played here.
Okay,
so I have it here.
I'm playing it.
You can't hear it
because it's in the background,
but.
I actually,
I had it as a sixth choice.
This is Debbie Gibson.
No.
This is,
could have been.
Yeah.
Which is Tiffany.
Could,
could have been so beautiful.
Yeah. Tiffany's in a Growing Fames episode or something. I just remember. which is Tiffany. Could have been so beautiful.
Yeah.
Tiffany. This is one of the growing themes of episodes with her.
Tiffany should have been on this list for many reasons,
but Tiffany sort of reinvented the way that pop stars are marketed
back in those mall eras.
She went on that mall tour and blew the fuck up.
Yeah, and she was dating the gay guy from New Kids on the Block.
Right, which is confusing in itself. Yeah, and she was dating the gay guy from New Kids on the Block. Right.
Which is confusing in itself.
But listen, this is the type of guys that pick songs for you folks.
So your disappointment in not hearing Tiffany and Debbie Gibson can be thrust upon Toronto Mike and Cam Gordon from Twitter Canada.
Should we take a screenshot on that note?
Well,
Hey,
maybe I do the outro and then I could pose for the screen cap because I got
to go read my script right now.
But honestly,
I want to say big thanks to the flies on the wall.
I'm picking next week's category,
by the way.
I can't wait,
man.
I can't wait,
brother.
Uh,
this was actually cam sec.
We had another topic that I picked five jams for.
I found out we were chucking that and doing this one.
So,
uh,
but that's,
I'm,
I enjoyed this thoroughly.
Thanks so much.
Thanks Ian service.
Even though you're late,
you had a good excuse.
Uh,
well,
Stu and cam couldn't have done this without you.
So thanks again for,
uh,
for being here.
Thanks.
Thanks.
As always.
And that!
And that!
My wife thinks
I'm like, she doesn't know what this is
when I go, and that! Like, what is that about?
Okay. And that brings us
to the end of our 647th
show. Maestro Fresh West was
episode 416. That was a
big fucking deal. 647
doesn't get the respect it deserves
because it came so late in the game.
But I think that should be a big deal for Toronto Mike too.
647 is our other area code.
