pandemic
Friday
is Stu stone and cam gordon
well done well done hello mike hello hello hello one hello uh where's that enthusiasm i said i
want to hear you loud and proud. Yes, come on.
Maybe move your microphone in front of your mouth.
Cam is exhausted from staring at the election results as they hand count it.
Everybody wants to know the reactions. Let's start with you, Stu.
What do you think of what's going on south of the border?
Well, it's funny you should ask.
Did you happen to...
I know we had talked privately.
We offline talked about how some of us called it perfectly last week when you asked for predictions.
I don't know if you ever pulled that or not.
Tell us what you said last week.
Remind us.
I don't...
I mean, this is verbatim.
I mean, this is not verbatim, I should say.
I'm paraphrasing a bit because that was many years ago.
But I will say that you asked what would be the outcome of the election by the next time we got together.
And I proclaim that there would be no outcome by the time we next got together, that there would be legal mishmash going on from one side uh and probably
a path to victory for the other so that's where we're at um i don't think that it took a legal
eagle pundit some expert to come up with that because it was pretty clear what was right in
front of us but i'll tell you it's going to be quite ironic if while we're on the show
right now, because Fox News called Arizona last night or two nights ago. So if Biden wins one more
state in a crazy twist of irony, Fox News would be the one that would call it for Joe Biden first.
Right. So that might happen while we're here now. I don't know. But
the momentum seems to be going in one direction. So listen, either way, I think not much is going
to change. If the House and the Senate and all that sticks around, you're going to have a
different figurehead potentially. And not a lot of crazy radical things are going to get to go
past. And hopefully the coronavirus will be the thing that's going to be for the next two to four years out of our lives.
So let's see what happens.
Let's hope so.
Because we'll run out of topics if it goes another two to four years.
I don't think so.
We've got that giant spreadsheet.
Yeah, I think we're good for a couple of years.
It's a powerful topic today.
Well, before I ask Cam for his reaction,
because that's what the world's waiting for,
I do want to point out that today's theme
is TV themes.
As Stu and I privately,
as he slid into my DMs to tell me,
it's worthy of a sequel,
maybe multiple sequels.
There are so many choices
that it's like...
Some of my choices are just selfish choices this week. I may as well just play this on the show. But overall, the universe was so much better than a category that you and Cam picked. Put it that way. A lot more variety on the show. You like the broad strokes.
You like to have a huge universe.
I personally like narrow casting.
I like it if we just did TV theme songs
for Fox dramas.
Yeah.
That would be good too.
You could have had Canadian TV shows.
You could have had cartoons.
You could have had sitcoms.
Stu Stone TV shows that he was in?
We don't have enough hours for that.
Okay, before I forget, Cam, what are your thoughts?
They're counting ballots in Pennsylvania and Arizona and Nevada and Georgia
and other places nobody seems to talk about,
but North Carolina and Alaska, I believe is that runs at all.
Yeah.
I feel like someone should check on Alaska.
Like it just seems like they're kind of a standstill.
I made a joke too,
because it's like,
obviously Trump's going to win Alaska and it's three electoral votes,
but it's kind of frozen,
like halfway done.
Like they just said,
ah,
well,
that's quite,
that's quite ironic.
You know,
it's pretty cold there.
There's polar bears and whatnot. But what are your thoughts cam yeah i think stew nailed it and and i don't know like i i don't think anybody should be surprised i i thought
going in this seemed like a real what's what's the term like a pick-up like is that like a gambling
toss up coin toss coin toss yeah like it could go either way and it's still
very well might i mean there's obviously you know both uh gentlemen have certain paths they can
follow and you know when that happens who knows i do wonder if this will just be the pattern in
u.s elections going forward where you know you sort of just like buckle up and this is, you know, this is kind of like a full week of programming.
So, yeah, we'll see what happens. I mean, it's, it's wild. I don't know.
I mean, it's, but yeah, it's just,
you look at sort of the electoral college,
like for the last 20, 30 years,
and it doesn't really matter that much who the leader is.
I mean, you get the same kind of basic stuff
pretty much every year.
And then, otherwise, it's that other 20% that you look at.
So I don't know.
Yeah, before we move on, I'll just point out
that I was very wrong in my prediction
because I, well, I was kind of wrong.
Okay, I'm very wrong. I'm very wrong
because I... No, no, I don't think you
were, actually. Well, because I thought
Florida... You called a landslide.
But I
called a landslide for
Biden, but I also called that
feeling that Florida was
going to Biden, and if Florida goes to
Biden, I figured we would go to bed
on election night knowing that Biden was the elect, the the president-elect i will say this and then this is
like a maybe a weird analogy right now but i posed this question to you sports fans and i heard this
from a friend so i'm just you know stealing this from someone who said it to me but would you rather
be shack and kobe going into the fourth quarter down three or would you rather be Shaq and Kobe going into the fourth quarter down three,
or would you rather be the Minnesota Timberwolves up three against Shaq and Kobe?
No doubt about it. Put me down three.
I think the final score in that game is a blowout.
So I think you have to wait and see how this all shapes out
because Mike, if he could hit.306, he could hit more.
He could win everything except North Carolina.
This might be a blowout in the end.
It might not. I don't know.
Don't forget Alaska. That's going to Trump.
But you're right.
It'll be a bigger margin of victory in the electoral college
than Trump had over Hillary four years ago
if things fall like they could.
So stay tuned, folks.
This guy got a lot of support okay he is not
a joke donald trump is definitely a very smart guy and definitely has a huge huge following so
whatever happens whether he wins or loses he's gonna still have a base that's gonna even grow
bigger because that's how these that's how you spin these things so you know all the credit to
him for getting this far i don't know what what's going to happen, but it's looking like, according to the Vegas odds and according to the patterns that we're seeing as these counts are coming in, that it's looking like there could be a new president.
By the time we finish counting down TV theme songs today.
A couple of final thoughts about the electoral college too and i i meant to mention i i i was the kind of
two-timing on you guys because i was actually on uh i did a tv spot in calgary on breakfast
television out there and we we talked got into this a little bit um just all of a sudden people
are like very in tune with sort of the you know this kind of composition and it does feel like falling pro sports in a lot of ways but i was talking to a friend of mine by dm and him and i were saying
it will be interesting we'll see in four years what impact the coronavirus have in terms of the
future of work and maybe people moving out of cities and whatnot might we see some of these like
triding through you know red counties in various states
all of a sudden have this influx of folks who would like formerly lived in new york
that's like natural conversation i mean basically anywhere where there's a city
that there's a city in a state that you have heard of yeah trump didn't win there right you know so
it's like if these cities started spreading out, like Los Angeles is all spread out,
obviously not by counties, that's a bad example.
But as Cam is saying, if people are to spread out
and get out of these big city situations because of COVID,
he could be right.
Well, they're saying that's why I think Arizona flipped,
they're saying, and it wasn't COVID really,
but just because of the influx of just people from
other areas that you don't... I mean, Arizona
is just sort of remarkable because I just think of
Sheriff Joe... Are you calling it, Cam?
Are you calling Arizona? You're saying it has
flipped? Is that... Well, I mean,
he's on track to flip it.
Also, let's look at
McCain. That's his
former state. So it would be
a pretty... Listen, I don't need to say it. It's his former state. So it would be a pretty...
Listen, I don't need to say it.
It would be pretty wild
if Trump doesn't win Arizona.
Could be some poetic justice.
So as we proceed tonight,
we got lots of great TV themes.
And I noticed a trend between you two,
especially, and myself a bit as well.
You know, we always have the mind blows.
Well, there's mind blows on top of mind blows.
There's a multitude of mind blows. There's a lot. It's good that TV themes are typically pretty
short because we have a lot of jams to get to. But I will keep my eye on that New York Times
election page just to see if anything transpires while we're recording. But I have some housekeeping,
kind of a few housekeeping items here. This one's a strange um oh by the way al grego who's a
great f.o.t.m he wanted a minute of silence uh somebody put in the periscope they wanted election
talk they'd be watching cnn go fuck yourself who are you we can talk about what we want to talk
about uh oh yeah so a moment of silence for matt laden's twitter account it's currently uh he's not
able to log in right now uh matt laden's a great FOTM, and I miss his tweets.
Yeah, Matt, if you're listening, go, you can file a ticket at user support.
Just Google it, and you'll find our support page.
Matt Layden, I would like to just pose a question to you.
What's going on tomorrow?
I told Matt, Cam, that you'd give him a personal call tomorrow,
so he's expecting it.
That's not how, that's not my question. Give him Cam's, actually'd give him a personal call tomorrow, so he's expecting it. That's not my job.
Actually, give him Cam's cell phone number.
Done.
Done.
He wouldn't be the first.
I love when that happens.
I had a listener wrote me, slid into my DMs, her name,
and I hope I get this right.
It's Apricity, like A-P-R-I-C-I-T-Y. Apricity. And
she basically asked if on Pandemic Friday
we could play her new song.
I'm going to play a little bit of this song.
Is that a paywall?
I didn't receive a penny for this.
We'll get to that in a moment.
But here, just a bit of
a song called All My Life.
No, All My Lies
by Apricity.
And I promised her we'd play a bit of it.
So let me give it about 20 seconds here.
And I guess I'd be curious if you guys can even hear this.
Oh, I can.
We'll wait till she gets to the hook here. If you empty yourself, I won't believe it.
You're going to end up alone.
Because I'm the one who leaves you lost in the end.
I'm the one who breaks you.
Okay, so if an FOTM creates some original music and sends it my way,
I'll probably play it on a Pandemic Friday.
So that's what we learned here.
Usually I get paid to listen to music and give opinions on what to do with their career and whatnot.
Do you want to make some judgment here?
Well, it sounds to me like a very nice effort.
And it sounds to me like a song that maybe if there's a pandemic 10 years from now,
it seems like a song that would end up on Cam's list of great female rock performances of the year 2020.
Can Con, local Can Con.
So, you know, it's very nice singing.
It's very nice.
Good job.
Good song.
Okay.
I can listen to it on a Peloton. It's very nice. Good job. Good song. Okay. So who was this?
I can listen to it on a Peloton.
Apricity?
A-P-R-I-C-I-T-Y.
The song is called...
Is this a friend of a friend?
No, I never know.
No, she literally slid into my DMs
and asked me if we'd play it on Pandemic Friday.
And the song's called...
Did she specifically say Pandemic Friday?
I had to go check the receipts. I think so. Because that's
going to affect my opinion. Because
if she said specifically Pandemic Friday,
then I'm all for giving her the love and support.
She's just trying to hustle you for a
free spin. No, she very well could be.
Free lasagna.
That's what this is about. Look, I'm not that easy.
The song's called All My Lies. It's by
Apricity. I'll keep it quiet in the background
because I want to say hello to a lurker
on the Zoom that is actually being broadcast
on Periscope right now.
Welcome back.
She's not allowed to judge,
but she's allowed to sit in here.
Welcome back, Lieve Fumke.
Hello, Lieve.
Hi, Mike.
How are you?
Good.
How are you?
Go ahead, Stu.
Finally, law and order has returned to Pandemic Fridays.
Law and order.
Law and order.
I would love to use these, but I've been banned.
In my heart, it's Stu.
We're just going to move on from that because that sounds ridiculous.
Cam's not happy with me either.
No, those are sensual words.
Did you say those are sensual words?
Sensual words.
Sensual.
I don't know what that means either.
So, Leva, you know the fellow FOTM, Sheila.
Yep. Okay. While a Priscity is in the fellow FOTM, Sheila. Yep.
Okay.
While a Priscity is in the background, I hope I said that right.
My apologies.
Good song.
I'm going to play a clip of Sheila talking about the newest Toronto Mike sponsor.
So let's listen to FOTM Sheila.
Hi, Mike.
As a longtime FOTM, I welcome the opportunity to tell you about Joanne Glutish, a sales representative at Royal LePage Real Estate Services.
Joanne has built a long and successful career by helping people achieve their real estate goals.
Her knowledge of the market, experience in negotiations, and her genuine
interest in people's needs are what set her apart. She consistently ranks among the top producers
in sales and service and is a lifetime member of the National Chairman's Club, which is awarded to
the top 1% of agents at Royal LePage Canada. So whether you're looking to buy your first home, move up, purchase an income property,
help your parents sell the house they've been in for 40 years, or just have your questions
answered, visit her at joannegludisch.com and then give her a call.
So welcome to the family, Joanne Gludisch.
And Joanne Gludisch works closely with Sheila. Go ahead, Stu.
I have so many
questions.
If I may.
Go ahead. Who is the
person we were just listening to?
Sheila.
I got to tell you, I could listen to Sheila read a phone
book. She is fantastic.
What a set of pipes.
If anyone ever wants to start a robocall company or a, you know, please hold the next customer representative is going to get with you.
You know, she's got a real career here.
I really, you know, I would take a robocall from her any day.
And who is the woman that she's speaking about?
Joanne Glutish.
Joanne sounds like a hell of a gal
if sheila if sheila is gonna tell us all this great stuff about her she's listen if sheila
says it's kosher it's kosher wow so they're helping a good life for stew so i wanted to
this is the week where we introduced joanne to all the fotm so i've been uh this is i think the
third episode of the week.
There's one more. I wouldn't mind getting Sheila to record my voicemail.
Like, hello, you've reached Stu.
She should be on like Cameo.
I swear, she's really good.
She has a, like, she can even be like a,
she's got a really trusted sounding voice.
Like if I picked up the phone, I was like, hello.
And then it was like robo call Sheila.
I would not hang up right away. I'd want
to hear what she was telling me.
And this gentleman, and this
dear friend here,
this guy's no chump. This guy has been a
voice actor for
almost 40 years, almost his whole life.
So this is no...
And a rap star. He sold
300,000 copies of a rap album.
He's in recording studios.
I recognize Sheila. Now, the girl whose song you played, He sold 300,000 copies of a rap album. He spent a lot of time in recording studios. Yeah.
So I recognize Sheila.
Now, the girl whose song you played, that was a good song.
But Sheila's spoken word performance, that was on another level.
On another level.
So welcome.
Yeah, go ahead, Cam.
I do have a question before we leave Sheila and Julie Goulash.
Come on.
Joanne. Joanne.
Joanne Glutish.
Whose phone is that?
Well, I bet it's the Keitner group.
Like, what the fuck is this about?
Dirt bag?
Like, what's...
You love the real talk, Mike.
What's the
sitch? Well, it's Mike. What's, uh, what's the sitch?
Well,
uh, you know,
it's November.
It's no longer October here.
We're,
uh,
we're all about Joanne Glutish,
uh,
and,
and welcome to the family,
Joanne.
And thank you,
Sheila,
for recording that.
Uh,
I wish you guys,
is she,
is she going to be dressing as Elvira anytime soon?
I don't know.
Maybe.
Speaking of,
all right,
well,
speaking of Elvira,
I guess that you're referring to Barb Paluskiewicz.
She's from CDN Technologies.
If there's a computer or network issue that you have,
you can call Barb at 905-542-9759,
or you can write her an email.
This is what I do,
barb at cdntechnologies.com.
They're your outsourced IT department.
Is there any chance you two are in my backyard next Thursday?
Hold on a minute.
What if I did like a three-way call where I called Joanne and Barb?
Am I killing two?
Am I like satisfying Toronto Mike?
Like crossing streams.
Honestly, it would make you a great FOTM.
I think that's exactly what people should do.
I think like a conference call needs to be had so they can
all just talk about life.
Go one of two ways, I'd say.
Just be in a moment of ecstasy.
Or you could get a
house and get your
technologies figured out.
When you do this, make sure you're drinking a fresh craft
beer from Great Lakes Brewery and enjoy
maybe some delicious lasagna
from Palma Pasta. And by the way,
while you're doing it, I recommend
you design some kind of logo,
you upload it to StickerU.com
and maybe get yourself some of these
awesome stickers made up
at StickerU.com. Do all that,
you'll be a great FOTM.
Mike, I was actually looking
for just an old photo, I forget what,
on my phone.
Can't hear you.
Louder.
Be a professional like Sheila.
How's this?
That's better.
I don't know. Is that better?
That's better. Anyway, Mike, I was just looking for a photo on my phone,
and I stumbled upon the photos of you and I hanging out at Sticker U
just over a year ago.
I feel like that was kind of
like pre-pandemic. That was like in January?
First of all, it was definitely pre-pandemic.
Yeah, of course.
I mean like just in
those final days
where we could actually... The good old days.
...hotmail receptions at
sticker vendors and whatnot.
Yeah, no, that was a good time there.
And StickerU.com, they've been a great sponsor
for a good, I think, 18 months now and counting.
So shout out to them.
I will later in this program,
I'll tell you about an event
that's hosted by Ridley Funeral Home.
So I'll save that one for later.
And before we kick off...
That's got to be a real uplifting event.
Well, I got to wait for the details on that.
Do you remember Casey Kasem couldn't talk
about the death of the dog coming off the uptempo?
So this is a similar... I need to wait for the right jam to tell you guys about the candlelights tribute that's going to happen with Ridley Funeral Home.
Wow, that would have to be a quite, is that like Littlest Hobo theme or something like that?
Well, if we get something like that, we'll see what comes up.
But I'm kind of excited to start this off because I'm looking at the jams that have been submitted.
And of course, we always lead with
Cam Gordon.
How's my audio, by the way?
Is this better? Breaking news, by the way.
That's not better. Breaking news.
Trump now leads by
90k in PA
with 300,000 votes to go.
It's not too breaking. I feel like
that was
announced earlier today.
I just saw it right now.
It said breaking news.
90 grand.
Yeah, yeah.
So the New York Times site had that 90 grand a few hours ago.
But maybe there'll be more breaking news as we progress.
Please don't be shy.
I do appreciate you bringing that to our attention.
I now regret that I pooh-poohed it.
All right, let's get to some jams.
Okay, so I have very specific instructions, let's get to some jams. Okay.
I have very specific instructions,
and I hope I don't screw this up, but I'm going to start with this jam.
Cam, did you want to preface the first jam? Maybe we want to know
if Stu knows this song. Is that right?
This is going to be a two-parter. We're going to play a little
piece of music.
It's going to be a guessing game for Stu Stone.
16 seconds. A bit of
Name This Tune.
Okay, but before you do that, if someone has to go to the bathroom or get a snack, It's going to be a guessing game for Stu Stone. 16 seconds. A bit of name this tune. Yeah.
Okay. Okay, but before you do that, if someone has to go to the bathroom or get a snack,
Cam's First Jam is a good time to do that.
You won't be missing much.
It's only 16 seconds long.
I was going to say, they're very short, so you might want to sprint if you're doing that.
So, Mike, why don't we let it rip?
This will be a bit of name that tune for Stu Stone to kick things off.
Here we go.
Listen closely, Stu.
We want to know if you know this song.
Does that mean anything to you?
Sounds like a great show.
Sounds like the type of show that I would want to watch,
maybe on a Sunday.
I don't know.
That's out of my wheelhouse.
That was the opening theme, and as well,
I believe it was also kind of incidental music
for the original Kids of Degrassi street oh now stew you've never amazingly for all you know your your time on the
the big screen and the the what's this tv called small screen small screen that's also the silver
screen um so the big one in the degrassi universe right uh no i uh you know growing up degrassi was a non-union show
and so right that were in the union couldn't be on it so as much as i wanted to be on it
uh they would rather you know they were getting these kids i'm sure when toronto mike eventually
speaks to joey jeremiah he'll tell you next week they're probably getting paid they're probably
getting paid ham sandwiches and kool-aids right uh so that's right no that's why that's why it never happened but i'm a huge
fan huge fan of the show yeah and i think the original kids of degrassi street which uh i
imagine most fotms and listeners would probably know this but for those was was the was even the
predecessor of degrassi junior high and yeah i
believe that like the story was a lot of the kids on that show were literally just kids from the
neighborhood right um now before we sorry i don't mean to interrupt you cam uh but i did it anyways
i have a very i want to i have a very specific memory of like my primary school class
walking to runamede library okay not not far from running me and bluer
and we all collected and watched episodes of the kids of degrassi street on the uh the tv they
rolled in like a very specific memory of this and some of the faces like wheels he didn't play wheels
but the actor who played wheels i think he played a character named griff that's right griff and
joey was i believe joey was like there are some characters that
lived you know i think that's a poor choice of words actually but went on to be in degrassi
junior high and degrassi high i feel like lucy had a different name in the original
yeah um but yeah pretty and you remember alex alex was tessa campanelli's original boyfriend he wore glasses kind of short curly hair
when he got a bit older he'd wear
a blazer with shorts
yeah
that's my look
is Kids of Degrassi sort of like
the Good Morning Miss Bliss
to Saved by the Bell
yeah that's a good comparison
so anyway that little
piece of music was actually not my choice here,
but I mean, it'll be a lead-'m searching for a place where I'll fit in. There's a way if I look then I can win. Yeah, I can see I'm not alone, I can face the unknown.
can succeed in yourself you must believe give it a try yeah so it's a peppy little number and a i'd say like an iconic song of canadian
television so that was the theme song of degrassi high a slight variation from was also the theme song of Degrassi High, a slight variation from was also the theme of Degrassi Junior High.
Slightly more sophisticated lyrics
because now the
kids had advanced to
high school. But a bit lazier
because we all knew already, of course,
Degrassi Junior High was an iconic
theme. I'm surprised you didn't go with that one, but it was like
at Degrassi Junior High!
And then they changed it to at Degrassi High!
What a Cam thing to do! What a Cam thing to do.
What a Cam thing to do.
No, I actually have a personal connection
to Degrassi High.
I feel like I may have mentioned this.
Before I got into PR,
I went to PR school,
which is a thing,
at Centennial College,
which is on Carlaw Boulevard
in Toronto's East End,
which was in the building where Degrassi High
was filmed. And
currently, this is even, I think it's even in my
Twitter bio, I'm on the advisory
committee for the communications program at Centennial.
Same building,
Degrassi High. So I've spent
a lot of actual time in Degrassi High.
I've been on the ramp many times.
I've got a timeout here, a quick timeout.
The facade of Degrassi is in my hood.
So is it that the facade,
like the outdoor shots are done in my hood
and they did the indoor shots in your hood?
I think Degrassi Junior High is in your hood.
Oh, okay.
Degrassi High is on Carlaw, north of Danforth,
which is actually fairly close to the actual
Degrassi Street.
You guys just ruining Christmas.
But the actual Degrassi Street has
a space between Degrassi.
That's right, yeah.
And they removed that for the show. Do we know why
they removed that or do I need to ask Pat Mastro
Annie next week? I don't know. Yeah, maybe
he knows. Maybe it's more
salable for the Boston
PBS station or whoever else
was airing it.
I would say that
good start. I mean, I'm a
big Yik and Arthur guy,
so I'm a fan.
But I do want to say, do you have
any fun facts? Like who's singing the song?
Well,
it was difficult to dig up who that voice was i do
know the composer who generally do yeah a gentleman named lewis man so and man is m-a-n-n-e
him and his wife wendy watson wrote not only degrassi junior high and it's it's sequel degrassi Jr. High and its sequel, Degrassi High. They also wrote that incidental music,
Kids of Degrassi Street.
More importantly, they also wrote the Zit Remedies.
I was going to say their biggest hit, their only song.
Yeah, that's their only song.
Everybody Wants Something, they wrote that.
Lewis Mann actually wrote it with his teenage nephew,
who was a guy named Robert Mann,
which when I used to work for an
agency that was part of um edelman a few i know i don't know communication agency i know um there
was a guy who worked there named rob i think rob man probably the same guy same guy yeah sure it
would be sort of around the same age i i don't really know him even though we're probably connect
on linkedin so i might have to send him a random note.
But anyway, so Lewis Mann
and his wife, Wendy Watson,
they wrote this together, but they've
also done all sorts of other commercial
music. They own a company
called Zap Production where they've done
stuff for organizations.
They're kind of obscured, including
Air Canada, the CBC,
Cirque du Soleil, M&M Meat Shops, and the Ontario Provincial Police.
Wow.
I thought Kim Mitchell would be doing that, but go ahead.
Let's not mess around here.
The M&M Meat Shop song is pretty fucking good.
Yeah, I mean, they wrote some jams, for sure.
So, a lot of talent there.
Well, dude, if I wrote the fucking Zit Remedy song, I wouldn't shut up about it.
It would be my icebreaker at every
social engagement I ever attended.
No, you'd be like Paul Henderson.
You'd never stop talking about that one goal.
Right. Oh my god, I could spend the whole
two hours talking about
your awesome selection there. I think it's a
great start. So to be
specific though, you do
prefer the Degrassi High song
To the Degrassi Junior High song
To be honest
I don't have a strong preference
Like I'd say gun to my head
I'd go with Junior High
Again with my personal connection
You just decided to play the other one
It's whatever showed up in YouTube first
Okay
That's a great start
And I love where Stu's taking me next
The show I watched every I think it was Thursday nights, and I loved.
Are you ready, Stu?
I thought this would be a good place to start.
Not only because, you know, you've got Republicans and Democrats fighting over the election,
but this is a TV show that featured Republicans and Democrats fighting every week for our laughter and our love.
So I thought this was a good place to open because I'm thoughtful like that.
It also reminds me of good times and good people like lita famke you know this is a really
if there was a show to start this is the sheila of songs this is a really strong
a strong opener right here so uh go ahead have at, can't name this tune.
I bet we've been together for a million years
And I bet we'll be together for a million more
Oh, it's like I started breathing on the night we kissed. And I can't remember what I ever did before.
What would we do, baby, without us?
What would we do, baby, without us?
And there ain't no nothing we can't love each other through.
What would we do, baby, without us?
Sha-na-na-na.
Oh, wow.
Sha-na-na-na.
What a jam.
Love it.
Sha-na-na-na indeed. I think it's sha-la-la-la. I don't think it's sha-na-na-na. What a jam. Love it. Sha-na-na-na indeed.
I think it's sha-la-la-la.
I don't think it's sha-na-na-na.
Isn't it sha-
Whatever it is.
Semantics.
There's something very yacht rocky about that song.
Right.
It has all the makings.
You know, it's got that doobie kind of bounce to it.
I gotta tell you.
Steve, you're a luther.
What a jam.
Who's singing that jam? Well, we'll get to that. Steve, you're a jamm. What a jamm. Who's singing that jamm?
Well, we'll get to that.
Oh, okay.
The show is called Family Ties, for those of you keeping score at home.
This was a very popular sitcom that launched the career of the great Canadian Michael J. Fox.
Ever heard of him?
Will J. Fox.
Ever heard of him?
Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter hit the parents on that show.
A lot of great supporting sort of celebrity guest stars ended up becoming celebrities.
It's a real who's who of Hollywood.
Can I guess one?
Can I guess one?
Tom Hanks.
Sure. That would be correct. Yes. Three episode arc? Tom Hanks.
That would be correct.
Yes, three episode arc for Tom Hanks as Ned Donnelly.
First time I saw her.
What's her name?
Not Gilda Radner.
Who's the big
red-headed actress who was in League of Their Own?
Oh, Gina Davis.
Gina Davis.
Karen Nicholson. Gina Davis. Oh, my God. She's in that. Gina Davis. Yeah.
Karen Nicholson, two episodes.
Okay.
Now, you can continue because those are the two that pop up at the top of my head. By the way, remember when Gina Davis wanted to go to the Olympics as like an archery?
I remember that.
Courtney Cox, obviously.
Of course.
River Phoenix.
Whoa.
Jeff Cohen, who you might remember from The Goonies.
Corey Feldman.
Tom Hanks.
Martha Plimpton.
Will Wheaton.
David Faustino.
Wow.
Gina Davis.
Maura Tierney.
Wow.
And one of the great actors.
Now, this is ironic right here.
This gentleman played Doug in an episode called The Birthday Boy and would go on to star as Michael J. Fox's father in Back to the Future.
Crispin Glover was in an episode of Family Ties.
That's a bit of a mind blow.
I didn't know that.
I did not know that.
The theme song Without Us is composed by Jeff Berry and Tom Scott.
They recorded it and composed it in 82.
It was originally performed by Dennis Stefano and Mindy Sterling, but
as soon as that show became a hit, they were
shipped out and
Johnny Mathis and Denise Williams came in
to re-sing it for seasons
two through the rest of the way.
Mathis and Denise Williams actually
made the song into a full-length song
and put out a duet that actually
charted slightly. Mike, if you want to
play a little bit of that, mind blow.
That's not what we just heard then.
That's not what we just heard.
They did a full version of the song.
Wow.
I mean, we don't have to hear the whole thing, but
I can't hear it at all, actually.
Okay, I remember this one.
I bet we've been together for a million years denise fucking williams holy smokes
she's the just just uh uh just let's hear it for the boy let's hear it for the boy that's i know
my memory is fried tonight let's hear it for the boy of Let's hear it for the boy. I know my memory is fried tonight.
Let's hear it for the boy, of course.
Yeah, okay.
So what was the peak chart position for Without Us?
I know I'm putting you on the spot here.
Do you know by any chance?
Hold on.
I don't have it in front of me,
so I'm going to go with not very high if I didn't select it as something I needed to be talked about.
Well, you look that up, Cam.
Would you say this is Yacht Rock?
I'd say the original version perhaps more is.
It sounds like it wouldn't have been out of place on those albums Christopher Ward put out.
Like just very like…
like,
well,
also,
if you think about it,
though,
the original version,
the original version was recorded in 82 during like the heightened prime time of Yacht Rock.
This re-record happened in 84,
85 for Yacht Rock.
That ship had already sailed.
So maybe stylistically it changed in the,
you know,
not making excuses.
I could definitely remember this trope where around season four,
they would freshen up the, the,
the theme song.
I remember who's the boss did that too,
where they had a version that had,
uh,
I don't know if it was like Kenny G or someone playing the Alto sax.
you know who did that?
Uh,
if we're allowed to mention the show,
I hope we are.
But,
uh,
the Cosby show would do that.
Like every season was a different arrangement.
And then one year it was was Bobby McFerrin.
It was a thing to do, I guess.
The best Cosby show theme
would have been
That one was a good one.
Right, that was a good one.
Oh, the other show that did this was Roseanne,
right? Roseanne, every year their theme
would be...
I don't know what we're going to hear I don't want to say names of shows
I know I feel like we're going to
let me kick out
my first jam
great choice
now it's interesting how Stu you chose
you actually have the ripped version from the television
and I noticed that you as well Cam
I have the actual
full version of this theme I pulled but this is the one I chose and I'm going you as well, Cam. I have the actual full version of this theme I pulled,
but this is the one I chose and I'm going to talk about it.
Baby, if you've ever wondered
Wondered whatever became of me
I'm living on the air in Cincinnati
Cincinnati, WKRP
Got kind of time to play in the air
I'll bring it down to talk to you guys about it.
But I will say, I actually am of the belief that I would not be speaking into a microphone hosting this program right now.
If you find gentlemen and you to leave, if it weren't for this show, I was in love with WKRP in Cincinnati.
And then it made me fall in love with radio.
And then sort of like being into radio sort of in a strange way eventually led to Toronto Mike.
So, yeah, like I noticed you do bring it up a lot.
Because I don't know, I think of this show,
I have no relationship with this show.
I was Howard Hessman, I think, more of head of the class.
Right.
Now, Mike, I guess you probably saw this in reruns
because you're too young to remember the initial run of this.
Yeah, I watched it in syndication every day. This show came
on and it was like a Gilligan's Island, this,
Three's Company, Little House on the Prairie.
These shows were on all day long. Yeah, like
Jefferson's, Archie Buckner.
Right. So a few, so
I did love the, it turns out it was
only four seasons long, but I guess
you know, you watch it enough. You know, shout out, by the way,
you guys are big baseball fans. You know, there was
Sparky Anderson had a cameo and I say Sparky, I say because I. You know, shout out, by the way, you guys are big baseball fans. You know, there was Sparky Anderson had a cameo.
And I say Sparky, I say because I guess he was, of course, a manager of the Reds.
Big red machine.
Right.
Now I bring up Sparky Anderson to tease the fact that maybe by the third round,
I'm going to, we've never done this before.
There's an FOTM named Anderson who's a big Tigers fan.
I don't know if he's, maybe he's named after Sparky Anderson.
We'll have to find out.
But Anderson asked if he could submit his five favorite TV themes.
And I said, you know, email them to me and I'll read them off.
So maybe the midpoint, I'm going to read off Anderson's top five TV themes.
And he's got a fun fact for each one because he totally gets the vibe of pandemic fridays
great avatar photo too sort of the uh slimmed down cecil fielder oh okay mike here's a question for
you yeah yeah and then i'll give you some facts resident uh wkrp aficionado i know when uh 1236
was over to the backyard recently you talked about these disclaimers that are popping up
in front of
such programs as the brady bunch and seinfeld kind of acknowledging right some of the themes here and
this is a different time and place do you think these would apply for wkrp again i'm not really
that familiar with it but i feel like this show got into some kind of edgier like message topic
well okay you know the forward thinking right but right? I don't think it needs a disclaimer
because I think... You wouldn't put a disclaimer
on forward thinking. It would be a disclaimer
on jokes that are no longer funny or racist
or something. See, obviously
Jennifer Marlowe,
the character of Jennifer
Marlowe was a voluptuous...
She knew that she used
it to manipulate the dudes.
She was in on it, using it to her advantage.
So it wasn't like she was the buxom blonde
that a misogyny could rain down upon.
She was in control of it all.
She was the power holder.
And then you have the famous episode,
a couple that come to mind that were progressive
and therefore not requiring a disclaimer, as Stu said,
is the one where they take nude photos of Jennifer Marifer marlo and she was changing do you remember this like he
takes secretly takes photos of her changing and creepy and then the final one is the um oh you
know what arthur carlson who's on wkrp my brain just pictured him uh trying to seduce young boys
and i realized that's an episode of Different Strokes
where the actor who plays
Arthur Curl... Bike shop.
That's right. The great Gordon
Jump, although not great.
Later the Maytike Repairman. Correctamundo.
So scratch... That's not
a WKRP episode, but I want to give you some
fun facts about that theme before I do a
quick... Wait.
Is Dudley's bike Shop still in business?
The pop
over? So that theme
if you listen to that, that's basically the
Andy Travis story.
Andy Travis was the program director
if you will, the president at
WKRP and that's his story
about his decision to settle down
in Cincinnati. So that's what
that theme's about. It was composed by Tom Wells.
There's lyrics by the series creator, Hugh Wilson.
And the performer of that song
is a gentleman named Steve Carlyle.
And that song peaked at number 65
on the Billboard Hot 100.
Oh, not bad.
What year would that be?
Like mid-70s or even early 70s?
I feel like late 70s.
I should have that at my disposal because it only ran four years and I think it leaks into the 80s.
Well, yeah.
And if you're talking Sparky Anderson on the Reds, that was sort of like 73 to 76.
By the way, we lost a key member of that big red machine recently with Joe Morgan passed away. We all
probably listened to on Sunday Night Baseball
growing up with John Miller too.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
On that note, since you brought up
the loss of...
Thank you because I was waiting for
somebody to bring up the loss of somebody
great like that. This is an
opportunity for me to tell you guys...
This is literally...
You're a disgusting person, Mike.
This year's...
You used the death of Joe Morgan
as a segue to a Ridley Funeral Home spot.
But I'm not...
Little Joe Morgan.
If you listen closely,
if you listen closely to the message here,
this is an event.
It's called
Holidays and Hope Candlelight Service of Remembrance.
It's a live online event.
And you guys can join.
You guys could sign up.
The good people at Ridley Funeral Home will give you comforting messages.
They'll have some live music. You can reflect
on your loved one's life and legacy.
The day of...
Will that girl whose song we heard,
will she be performing there? And if not, why not?
Possibly. There'll be some great live
music. It's Wednesday, December 2nd at 7 p.m.
And if you wish to attend
and you want the link,
I think it might even be Zoom.
It's some technology.
RSVP, you can phone Ridley Funeral Home
at 416-259-3705.
Or you can write contact us
at ridleyfuneralhome.com.
Okay, that's the WKRP opening theme.
I'm just going to play a few seconds of the closing theme
and tell you how much I enjoyed that as well.
So here's the closing theme.
So I'll bring it down to tell you that there are no lyrics.
There's no words.
It is all pure gibberish.
So if you ever try to figure out what the hell the guy's saying at the end of WKRP,
you know, keep to save your energy for something more productive because it's just gibberish the whole way.
But shout out to the WKRP closing theme, which I also
quite like. Who sings this?
It's sort of a Bob Seger vibe.
It's definitely not Bob Seger,
but I'm not too sure
who's singing this one.
You know, you mentioned Howard Hessman
in Head of the Class.
That's the big show he's on, right? That's right, yeah.
Do you remember? He was in Flight of the Navigator.
Do you remember this? I know you're not a big movie
watcher. Stu, you remember Flight of the Navigator?
Of course, yes.
Was that like a young
Ethan Hawke or
something? What am I
thinking of? Well, you know what?
Is that fucking Ethan Hawke?
I'll Google this during your next jam
here, because I can't wait to get to that one.
I think I might be thinking of a young Josh Brolin in something.
Well, Jeff Bridges is in Starman.
Is that what we're thinking of?
I don't know.
All right.
We got to get to your second jam.
There's so many great jams to get to here.
So thank you.
Pennsylvania, breaking news.
That lead is now down to 78 grand.
That is okay. I 78 grand. That is...
Okay, I see this.
Okay.
It says there's about 326,000 mail ballots
that still need to be counted in Pennsylvania.
So if you extrapolate the math,
Biden's going to win Pennsylvania.
I was going to say, again,
I was having the same DM conversation
with Christopher Doyle,
who I think Mike,
you've probably met a former head of sports at Twitter.
Can I said Pennsylvania,
I'm getting a real Leafs Kings game six vibe.
We're like,
Biden's like swarming,
swarming,
but you know,
will he just run out of time?
Right.
I mean,
I guess on that one,
like Wendell scored late to tie it up,
but we'll see.
Oh man. I, now I'm thinking about game, like Wendell scored late to tie it up. But we'll see. Oh, man.
Now I'm thinking about game six.
What a series.
Well, Damien Cox wrote a book about this.
He called it The Last Great Series or something like that.
Do you remember this?
Or Last Great Season?
Yeah.
Yeah, no, I do remember that.
God.
Yay or nay to Cox coming back to my backyard because I'm thinking of having him back before
it snows. And some people are like, oh, he's gone a little bit. Marty York. But yay or nay to Cox coming back to my backyard because I'm thinking of having him back before it snows and some people
are like, oh, he's gone a little bit
to Marty York, but yay or nay?
Oh, yay for sure.
I mean, I don't know.
Who's going to come back first? Is he going to come back to your backyard
or is Levi Fenton going to come back
to this Zoom?
What's going on here? Oh, did she leave?
Oh, okay, it's bedtime for her, I think.
I think that's fine. She's probably making dinner or something.
Anyway,
Cox,
Cox will always be a yay for me,
obviously with one of the greatest moments in Canadian Twitter history.
There she is.
I missed you.
That's better.
Just in time for the next,
uh,
number one.
Okay.
Here is second jam.
Do you want to say anything or can I just kick it out?
Let's just go right into it.
And then,
uh, yeah
Here we go
Sometimes the world looks perfect
Nothing to rearrange
Sometimes you just
get a feeling
Like you need some kind of change
No matter what the odds are this time
Nothing's gonna stand in my way
This flame in my heart, like a long lost friend
Gives every dark street a light at the end
Standing tall on the wings of my dream
Rise and fall on the wings of my dream
The rain and thunder, the wind and haze
I'm bound for better days. It's my life, my dream, and nothing's gonna stop me now.
All right, Cam, explain yourself.
Okay, Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now, that is the theme song to the sitcom perfect so as to say
the motion picture the sitcom perfect strangers now mike i i know you and i were chatting a bit
by dm saying i was gonna blow your mind i mean you're right with this is like just this is like a
land full of landmines this whole whole episode with blowing mines left and right.
But I said I was going to quickly thread a needle between perfect strangers and universal honey.
You just had on this week.
OK, can I play a little just before Mary goes in the background while you talk about this?
Yeah, absolutely.
So so here's here's the connection.
I'll get to this quick.
So this song was written by someone named Jesse Frederick.
Can I ask you a question about Jesse Frederick?
Because this Perfect Strangers theme song,
it really fits the mold of these Miller Boyette Friday night shows.
It sounds like the same as the Full House,
same as the Steve Urkel show.
Perfect Strangers, Full House, same as the Steve Urkel show. Perfect Strangers, Full House,
Family Matters,
and Step by Step
all sound like it's by the same guy.
Anyway, that was my fourth
fun fact, but Stu, I like the
cat out of the bag, so thanks, pal.
I didn't know that. I didn't know it.
I just recognized
there's nuances about the song.
Why don't I do a screen cap? I'll just send you all the fun facts.
You can just read them out.
How's that?
I need to know.
Firstly, Stu, do you know this song?
Like, let me play it a bit louder.
And I just want to know if you know this song.
Yeah, of course.
What do you mean?
Donkey Bar Takamuse.
Come on, Cousin Larry.
No, I know.
Not that song.
Not that song.
This one.
Do you know this song? Okay, Universal, honey, they were on Toronto Mike this week. You should listen to that episode. Just before Mary goes, she comes around. Yeah.
Do you know this song?
Okay, Universal Honey.
They were on Toronto Mic this week.
You should listen to that episode.
Please, I need to know, what's the connection between Universal Honey and the Perfect Strangers theme song?
Okay, just work with me here. Again, Perfect Strangers song written by a guy named Jesse Frederick.
Very wealthy guy because his father was like a chicken magnet.
Was part of kind of
Purdue, like chicken processing and stuff.
Oh yeah. Of course.
The Boilermakers.
Chicken world. Anyway,
I think a lot of people end up
writing for TV and music
had aspirations of being
a recording artist, a touring artist.
So Jesse Frederick, he actually put
a debut album in 1973,
years before this track.
But that album was actually produced by Todd Rundgren.
Okay.
Who later on produced, what was it, the first or the second?
First.
Love Junk.
Love Junk.
And then obviously a couple of members,
Pursuit of Happiness broke off and formed Universal Honey.
So there's your perfect strangers Universal Honey
connection. Now this guy
Jesse Frederick also dabbled
in acting. He was
in a movie and I've never heard of this
movie but it sounds fascinating. I kind of want to say
it's a movie called Roadie.
Do you know what this is?
No, I know Roadhouse.
Yeah, I was going to say I know Roadhouse with FOTM Jeff Healy.
Oh, he's not, technically it's his drummer that's the FOTM.
Yeah, so this film came out in 1980,
was I guess a star-making vehicle on the big screen for Meat Loaf.
I guess it's Meat Loaf playing a version of himself,
kind of, you know, touring fobos and life on the road and stuff.
I've heard of this, you knowos and i've heard of this you know what i've heard of
this because of of somebody who's going to be very relevant to stew's next jam oh yeah yeah
it's you know what i was about to say the same thing this is like a perfect segue but
you can't leave a perfect strangers without uh hearing the rest of his fun facts yeah so anyway
this movie roadie and you can look this up on your own time,
had an incredible array of musicians and including Roy Orbison,
Blondie and Hank William Jr.
As well as had Art Carney,
who this,
this came in 1980.
So I guess Art Carney was still kind of in the pop culture.
Right.
Again,
Stu kind of stole my thunder on the Miller-Boye production companies.
And Stu's, I mean, credit to Stu, they recognize that because he's right.
Jesse Frederick wrote a series of themes for all these shows produced by Miller-Boye,
who if you watched a lot of TV in the 80s, you'd recognize that name from kind of the slugs at the end of shows.
Perfect Stranger seems to be his first big one followed by valerie and then later
valerie's family or vice versa well no valerie then valerie's family then the hogan family
that's right yeah then the aforementioned full house and the aforementioned family matters so
jesse frederick wrote all of these um he also wrote his probably his most notable one outside
their miller boyer roster of shows was Hanging with Mr. Cooper.
Oh, good one.
A show I have not thought of for probably 20 years.
Oh yeah, that's a good one.
Mark Curry.
Yeah, so a couple more fun facts.
Wasn't Tim Curry
with Meatloaf
in, what's the
cult?
Yes.
Which is, just to bring it back to meatloaf and
the gentleman who we're talking about next was he at fan expo in toronto and he was like
he has i feel like he's like advanced parkinson's or something oh i didn't know that i feel like he
was not the same one that richard drake that that's not a very fun fact. No, that's not fun at all. Sad fact. Anyway, so this song was sung by someone named David Pomeranz,
who was, you know, a fairly successful recording artist in its own right
and was also a big touring artist,
opened shows in the 70s for Billy Joel and Rod Stewart, amongst others.
Doesn't get much bigger than that.
Yeah, and then Jesse Frederick was kind of, you know,
just doing his thing, kind of, you know,
had sort of faded a bit from the tv industry until about three or four years ago when they
did the full house reboot and they actually brought back jesse frederick to do a revised
version of the full house theme where they actually brought in canada's own carly ray
jepson to sing it wow never seen the show, but Carly Rae, call me maybe.
You haven't seen the show.
Got it.
Got it.
You haven't ever seen the show.
Right.
Full House I've seen a lot.
The reboot I've not seen.
Fuller House is the reboot, of course.
And remember, the connection there, of course, is Bob Saget did a song with Stu Stone.
That's right.
So, again, follow the money.
All this shit's related whether it's perfect
strangers and uh universal honey or stew stone and uh if i now i need just before i kick out this
next jam which will means we can talk about somebody who is related to meatloaf and has a
very interesting history i'm surprised we haven't kicked out one of his jams already but i need to
ask you like you had to pick five TV themes that you loved and like perfect
strangers.
Isn't that just like a,
a pedestrian run of the mill theme song?
Like,
like what's no,
I,
I think it's still better than any Metallica,
one of the park videos that you've done.
I have,
I have no issue with cam selection of perfect strangers.
Yeah.
I,
I,
I just think it's a great song.
I mean,
I think like full house or family Matters would have been great too.
But yeah, Justin Bieber.
I thought you were going to hit us with some crazy mind blow about like who's doing the harmonic solo.
Like is that Stevie Wonder at the end or something crazy?
Or it's like John Popper from Blue Strappler.
I was going to say, he did one of the Roseanne theme songs.
Did he really?
Yeah, I think one of the Roseanne's.
Yeah, he did.
He did.
For sure he did.
Yeah, he did.
And to God, I've never seen an episode of Roseanne yeah for sure he did yeah i've never seen an episode
of roseanne can i tell you i've never seen an episode of perfect strangers but i know
i love i loved roseanne actually i watched a lot of roseanne but okay um now this i can't wait to
kick this out it's going to be a little bit more obscure this one's going to be a little more
obscure you really have to be a hardcore sorry before obscure. This one's going to be a little more obscure. You really have to be a hardcore...
Sorry, before we get there, can I make one?
This is not a fun fact, but just
your guys' point of view on this.
Does this have to do with the Ridley Funeral Home?
No, I'm just tying a bow on perfect strangers.
Stu, if you attended that event,
it's very calming.
How about we liven it up?
I attended last year.
It was a live event last year.
I'm telling you, I'm a happy atheist year and i'm telling you i'm a i'm a happy
atheist but i'm telling you it feels good it feels good go ahead okay um so bronson pincho
pincho right his character belki bartokomos from what me posts
it's just so daunting me and i've never seen the borat movie or the borat movies
is this not just the same character like is it very similar bulky and borat i don't know i've
never seen borat so i don't really know like borat sort of obviously more so you know what you should
probably start by watching borat and then make your own decision because it's actually a really
fun movie that you probably would enjoy the first one, especially.
Okay. Yeah. The second one's not bad either. It's easy viewing.
That's for sure. But I think, uh, you know,
it's definitely worth checking out. I mean,
it's not like we're asking you to watch like six Lord of the Rings movies and
make, you know, this is like a 90 minutes and I think you'll,
you'll laugh a bunch.
Cam doesn't watch popular movies. You know that. Come on.
I don't watch anything. Well, that's why he watches Stu Stone movies
Heavenly Bodies
on VHS
Heavenly Bodies, Making a Murder on Hollywood Suite
okay how's it going
do you have any
buzz about Oscars
there's definitely Oscar buzz
in the air
we'll see what happens but if you haven't watched it yet, obviously, please do so.
Let me just say, if
an FOTM listening has not watched
Faking a Murder yet, you lose your
title, right? FOTM, we rip that
from your chest. Right.
It's the whole reason why, allegedly,
I've even been on this show to begin with,
to be able to promote a movie that I didn't know.
Cam sold me on that. That's like a QAnon conspiracy
theory, but I'm buying into that.
Careful.
Yeah, don't drink any Kool-Aid that Cam is serving.
But for this next pick, if I may,
I do hope that Cam knows this song,
but this is really a bit of a deep cut,
and it is from a cartoon program
that did feature live- action interstitials based on a
very popular celebrity craze.
This is Fritz the Cat.
Okay.
Let me kick it out because it's so Cam and Stu.
And I loved it too.
Here we go.
I don't know if he's going to know this, but let's hear it. I love this show.
Just fading it down to hear you, Stu,
because we're going to hear more of this kind of vibe and the fun fact you're going to throw at us in a moment.
Fair.
This is so dope.
Oh, I can turn it up.
Okay, I'll let it play out then.
We have 16 seconds.
I love this. Hulk Hogan's
rock and wrestling intro
if you're wondering
what they're yelling there, they're yelling Hulk.
Hulk.
This was the theme song for Hulk Hogan's Rock and Wrestling,
which was a WWF wrestling-themed cartoon series
that did run for two years and reruns for another year after that.
So another one of these WKRP and Cincinnati show,
My Pet Monster, perhaps you add to the list of shows you felt runs for another year after that so another one of these wkrp and cincinnati show my pet monster
perhaps you add to the list of shows you felt there was 100 episodes and it was really only
like 13 to 25 obviously wkrp bad example there but uh the my pet monster thing is that there's
only was only one season we only did 13 episodes in the same 13 episodes there for 27 years. Oh, yes. Wow. Anyway, more about Hulk Hogan's
rock and wrestling.
Hulk Hogan, Junkyard Dog,
Captain Lou Albano, Andre the Giant,
Wendy Richter, Jimmy Superfly,
Snooki, Ilbally Jim, Tito Santana,
Rowdy Roddy Piper, The Iron Sheik,
Nikolai Volkov, The Fabulous Moolah,
Big John Studd, Mr. Fuji,
Bobby the Brain Heenan, and Mean Gene
all were animated in this show, and Mean Gene all were animated in
this show, and all of them
were voiced by different people.
Wow.
Fun fact, I'm sure it's not
that fun if anyone's a fan of the show, but
Brad Garrett was the voice
of Hulk Hogan
in Hulk Hogan's Rock and Wrestling.
He went on to become the honest mechanic
on Seinfeld.
And then, of course, everybody loves Raymond.
He's Raymond's brother.
Oh, he talks in a deadpan voice.
Yeah, he talks like this, I think.
I have Sean and I.
Who's that guy from Sean?
Now, here's something interesting.
This song was featured on the wrestling album.
Yes, yes.
The first wrestling album. The one with such hits as I Am a Real American, etc., etc.
Now, here's where things get kind of funny.
Hulk Hogan's rock and wrestling song was originally intended to be Hulk Hogan's theme song to go to the ring right i am a real american which everyone knows is hulk hogan's theme song
was originally for a tag team called mike rotunda and barry windham when windham and rotunda left
wwf uh over some contractors some other dispute hulk hogan took the song i am a real american
and that left this song on the floor well the, the guy who wrote the song, Jim Steinman,
who you might remember from such meatloaf hits,
as well as Celine Dion's It's All Coming Back To Me.
Yep.
Epic rock and roll guide.
You with me here? Yeah. I am totally with you man bad out of hell he
decides he decides you know what f this shi i'm going to use this song and make it count because
these guys are screwing me so he took the hulk hogan's Rock and Wrestling song and repurposed it and it
became a single for Bonnie
Tyler. Check it
out. Long intro.
Long intro.
I'll turn it up when her voice comes in,
but it's worth noting that all the great Bonnie Tyler songs, those epic songs,
you know, they were all written by,
written or produced by, or both,
Jim Steinem.
Oh, here we are.
You got total eclipse of the heart.
Yeah.
And I need a hero,
holding out for a hero.
Yeah.
Remember, she did the original version of Tina Turner's The Best,
but rather Bonnie Tyler's The Best,
later covered by Tina Turner.
I'm surprised you didn't close with this fun fact
because it's kind of a big one.
Not that I'm judging you, but...
It's so reminiscent of so many other 80s songs.
It's a bit of Gloria.
It's a bit of Europe, the final countdown.
It's almost like they're all mushed together.
Well, it's worth
checking out on your own.
But it is
Bonnie Tyler.
The song is called Ravishing.
It's featured on her
1986 album Secret Dreams
and Forbidden Fire.
Hey, what's the
what's that soft
rock, early 80s soft rock australian band uh
men at work oil neither not definitely not credit credit credit course uh
that's not it's not australian um silver chair silver chair keep naming australian uh no the one air supply were they australian i thought
they were australian but they were like the air that i breathe was that them or was that 10 cc
not not 10 cc air supply is here let me this is important oh because no no we don't need to do
this come on yeah i'm always i'm right air. There's no Air Supply. Okay. It's another Jim Steinman act, Air Supply.
Yes, but the...
I bet he wrote
Love Out of Nothing at All
or whatever the...
This is what I'm trying to say.
Love Out of Nothing at All
is a Jim Steinman production as well.
Like, all those big epic 80s songs
you can think of
are all kind of coming out of this factory
that made Bad Out of Hell.
So, yeah, that's my point with Air Supply
is the Jim Steinman connection.
It's almost like musical
theater. I was going to say, it's all
very theatrical.
I was going to say, one, is he still with us?
Two, he must have been involved in the
Meatloaf musical.
Well, they're all his songs.
It's all his music. It's all his songs.
Yeah, he was involved in that, of course. But hands-on with like the production stuff this seems like it is dealhouse
i just heard a podcast about him and it sounds like the one he was able to conquer the charts
you know the billboard charts uh numerous times and had great success with beatloaf and others
like bonnie tyler but he never he wanted success in broadway and it always alluded him like all
his broadway productions failed now i don't think Bad Outta Hell ever made it to
Broadway. It was like an off-Broadway thing, but it was
of course popular. Breaking news.
Breaking news.
Georgia has now leapfrogged
Nevada and now becomes
the state with the least amount
of votes between first and second
place. Georgia, Trump up by
9,000 now.
Sorry, in Nevada? 9,000 in Georgia. In Georgia by 9,000 now. Sorry, in Nevada?
9,000 in Georgia.
98% reporting.
Okay, that's wild.
We have to drag out this episode until
Georgia has... Once we see Biden
leap ahead in Georgia,
although that's... You know what? Georgia on its own
is not enough electoral college votes.
It is if you're watching Fox.
It is if you're watching Fox. It is if you're watching Fox.
Which you should be.
Which you should be.
Well, okay. And I will point out,
Associated Press made the same kind of,
pulled the same boner, if you will, and called
Arizona a little prematurely.
Now Biden might probably... Listen, it's not
a boner until it's not right.
So far, he's
been leading the entire way.
Right. I just remember that Perisc, he's been leading the entire way. Right.
I just remember that Periscope comment about if they wanted the political chatter, they'd
be watching CNN, but that's okay.
All right, guys.
Are you guys ready for my second jam?
Yeah.
Hell yeah.
So we've done my WKRP, which was a very important jam to me.
And here's a show I loved just as much as I loved WKRP.
You never saw them in trouble Were the law since the day they were born
Problematic
Straight in the curb
Yeah, the car is problematic.
That is true.
Yeah, I can't believe I owned
that flag was in my home as a child.
It was part of my collection.
Is this Duke's Apparel?
Yep.
Making their way
The only way they know how
That's just a little
bit more than the love of love
okay so you're listening to
Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings who did the
theme song this is actually the
full version again I took
the full version I should have taken it from the actual
Dukes of Hazzard, of course,
the reason why windows
were invented in cars, so that
you could slide through the window.
So, Stu, you watched as well?
You know, the huge Dukes of Hazzard
fan. I had the car. I had the whole fucking
thing, man. Well, I only ask because...
They run over the ramps. They drive over ramps.
Other cars were crashed into barrels.
I knew I liked you. I knew I liked you. Because Cam asked,
if you noticed, a moment ago, Cam asked if this was
the Dukes of Hazzard theme. Yeah, I did.
Never seen it. Oh, man.
I watched a lot of this fucking show. Okay.
You know, Dukes of Hazzard, Fall Guys,
Simon and Simon, good quality block
of programming. I had the sheets.
So I had Dukes of Hazzard sheets growing up.
Was it Boss Hog?
Problematic sheets. I bet you... Did of Hazzard sheets growing up. Was it Boss Hog? Yeah. Problematic sheets.
I bet you.
Did you have any other sheets?
Yeah, I had Pac-Man.
Oh, I see.
It's very close.
Walked right into that.
Very clever.
It sounds like, yeah.
Somebody points out on Periscope, it sounds like a Trump rally song.
Well, yes, of course.
This has all aged very poorly, and it probably wasn't appropriate at the time.
So this would get a disclaimer. Yes. D at the time but so this would get a disclaimer yes dukes of hazard would get a disclaimer that's right exactly
now um what can i share with you about this let me see if i basically oh here's what i can tell
you i can tell you that of course waylon jennings this came out in august 1980 he put it on his
album uh music man it was the second single from the album. Of course, it's the theme song to the Dukes of Hazzard.
And if you're ready for this, okay,
it hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country singles in 1980.
And if you just want to talk the Billboard Hot 100,
which is like that definitive chart,
it hit number 21.
So that song, which is the official title,
is theme from the Dukes of hazard.
And then in parentheses,
good old boys,
that song hit number 21 on the billboard hot 100 in 1980.
Wow.
And I love this amazing about Waylon Jennings and Mike,
I'm going to tie this.
And then we asked you a question about another person you're speaking to
this week.
Waylon Jennings actually played the Lollapalooza tour.
He was part of, in 1997, they did a rotating guest spot
where they had like Orbital or like The Prodigy.
All the Orbits.
I forget who else.
Yeah, or Cheap Trick.
And yeah, we'll get to him in a second.
But yeah, Waylon Jennings was one of the rotating artists,
which seemed very, very out of place.
Was that?
Yeah.
But I just, for some reason, that popped to mind.
Wow.
Yeah.
Speaking of Lollapalooza, you had a former Lollapalooza artist,
James B.
You were chatting with him.
Yeah, I had a really, really good.
This was actually, yeah, it was for Ralph Ben-Murray to talk to James. You know, that's kind of a Friday night reunion. And we recorded that this episode. Yeah, I had a really, this was actually, yeah, it was for Ralph Ben-Murgy
to talk to James.
You know, that's kind of
a Friday night reunion
and we recorded that this afternoon
and I just dropped it
on the Not That Kind of Rabbi feed
this afternoon.
But because Ralph had some computer issues,
so I had a length of time
to chat up James B.
He's just one-on-one.
Really great chat.
That man is just a delight.
He's a very nice guy, easy to talk to. I asked him if he'd come on Toronto Mike to just discuss what is fame and is he famous? And he's all into that. He's all into that theme. So that's going to happen.
is James B famous? But I don't know. I feel like this is a good question for the present day,
because it's something we, you know, we certainly talk about a lot at Twitter Canada when,
you know, we're looking to work with different famous people or highlight different famous Canadians. And, you know, arguably some of the most famous Canadians are, you know, like YouTube
creators and esports athletes and, you know, beauty experts on TikTok and stuff.
Right.
I feel like the definition of fame is changing not just by the year, but almost by the month of what's notable and what's not in our present day.
So I'll definitely be tuning into that chat.
Oh, it's going to be interesting because I think he's got a pretty good grasp on his fame and the whole thing.
I think it'll be interesting to get his perspective and to dive deep into that.
And it'll just be the culmination of all these weeks of the open thought, is James B. famous?
So I'm looking forward to that.
Now, Cam Gordon, it's in your ballpark here.
Are you ready for your third jam?
Oh, good segue there. they might ballpark for sure so kick it or did you want to do a an opening monologue
okay here we go right into it Thank you. oh i forgot how long this goes i was gonna let it i know this is the extended cut so um
i don't know to anyone who grew up in toronto or perhaps grew up in canada
in the 90s was watching a lot of sports uh this might bring back memories this was the
cbs major league baseball theme song between the years of 1990 and 1993
i know for myself and hopefully you guys recognize it the second I hear those
shimmering open chords
I'm transported back to
1992 and 1993
the Toronto Blue Jays
their deep postseason runs
I get a little
chill up and down my spine
I'm transported back to what was
amongst the highlights of my
youth growing up in, in Thornhill, watching all the games.
Wait, wait, wait. You grew up in Thornhill? Yeah. I had no idea.
I had no idea. Yeah. Um, watching obviously Joe Carter.
Certainly, you know, it's a golden, golden era for those types of things.
I mean, like you had a,
which was NBA onc around that time michael
jordan then you had uh uh of course this was the baseball then hockey of course
lots of big sports songs yeah and definitely it you would it's deputy I was almost going to put like a WWF, like the Royal Rumble theme,
like sort of those like event centers for the Royal Rumble or like the WrestleMania
song.
It's almost like fanfare, right?
It's like fanfare.
Yeah.
And they're all like very like, not quite like you'd play it like a presidential like
inauguration, but there was a lot of pageantry.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah like yeah those songs absolutely if i make this the song that you mentioned that
nostalgia and i feel it too but the one that brings me right back and it just hits me real
hard is the this week in baseball theme yes the twib theme really gets me how about like uh old
school listeners of the uh uh, the fan,
the fan back in the day with the baseball report.
Yeah.
I would love to get a handle on sports.
Actually.
That's prime.
You and 1236 have done a deep dive on that song.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's just open source.
Like I have the full proper version.
Like it's just a,
an open source piece of music that yeah, they licensed shit all all over but i thought you were going to mention the 2020 updates had
this stinger this music that would play for the 2020 updates i don't think they play it anymore
uh not that i listen that much anymore but i remember uh that was like when you heard that
this is before twitter cam if you can believe it or. But you'd hear the 2020 music and you'd just get ready for your update.
And it was like a Pavlov dog type reaction.
How did it go?
How did it go again?
I can't remember.
I was hoping you'd remember.
Obviously, it wasn't that effective if you can't remember.
It was effective because when it disappeared,
I missed it for a very long time.
I remember especially if it was something like
the baseball winter meetings, and
it was hard to get information. You just knew
when you heard that it was like, you know, the
dinner bell ringing.
Yeah.
So yeah, a few fun facts about this song.
That's Sports Desk, right?
Yeah.
Bob Christensen was the
composer of this theme.
He did a shitload of sports themes around the same time,
including the college basketball on CBS theme that ran for many, many years.
He did the NHL on ESPN later that decade.
He did the NHL on ABC that ran from 1999 to 2004.
He did 2002, he did FIFA World Cup soccer on ESPN.
And he also did some non-sport stuff most notably he wrote a lot of the music including the theme song and i i tried to confirm this
because this seems from what i recall not the same thing but i guess it was he wrote the theme song
for sex in the city wow i'm trying i never really watched that either, but I can sort of think what that song is.
Yeah, I can...
He's also never breathed air.
He's never drank water.
He's never gone to the beach.
I don't even know what that means.
I mean, you have never seen Sex and the City.
You've never seen so many things that you haven't seen okay i've seen can i tell you i will say i i've seen uh in my first marriage
we watched sex in the city i've seen every single episode and i enjoyed it i i think i have seen
episodes but one final thought about this theme it's not so much about the theme but it was about
the host of of cbs major league baseball pat o'brien uh someone that you sort of don't think
about anymore but was such a big deal for so many years had just like fell off a cliff with a lot of
his like personal issues like i say this is not he was on uh in one of those uh inside edition or
one of those uh like entertainment shows or access hollywood or something yeah one of those but but
i don't know if you remember like he he had a lot of struggles over the year with alcoholism and
drugs and was caught on like tape or something that was then got played on the howard stern show
and uh i remember speaking of hulk hogan yeah and just really never worked again um yeah and he was big when the jays were winning world
series he was a prominent member of that uh of that telecast well i almost sent you they have
a lot of the openings for the blue jay world series games on youtube and he voices it right
yeah like i totally remember like his exact words just you know these
how pithy little remarks about life in toronto life in Atlanta, but it was kind of fun because there was a lot of comments about
other World Series around that time, so a lot
of Cincinnati Red fans
talk about Rob Dibble and
Barry Larkin and Jose
Riho and stuff. It all comes back to
Cincinnati, WKRP in Cincinnati.
I have breaking news.
No, it's not
election related. Matt Layden
is back on Twitter. Matt Layden is back on Twitter.
Matt Layden is
back on Twitter.
At Matt Layden, numeric one.
Welcome back, Matt.
Whatever you did, Cam.
Cam made a call.
The important
question is he asked you what's happening.
Is that how
you know that he's back?
I just
subtweeted it, but he tweeted,
Hey Toronto Mike, I'm back! With four
exclamation marks. And I'll be honest, I read
that and I took a few moments to make sure it wasn't
a parody account.
Like somebody having fun with me,
because it would be easy to parody Matt Layton.
Like Matt with one T.
Yeah, yeah, who knows? But it is
the bonafide. It is Matt Layton. He is back. Who knows? But it is the bonafide.
It is Matt Layden.
He is back.
So breaking news there.
I love your selection there.
I see Michael Lang on Twitter says he wants to hear Cheers,
Hill Street Blues, Hawaii Five-0, and the Hockey Night in Canada.
He says if they're not represented, he's going to give up on us turkeys.
Oh.
So that's Michael Lang.
Those are all great shows that he named
and uh he's not wrong well do we stew you decide do you want me to kick out your third jam or do
you want to hear anderson in michigan michigan anderson in michigan's uh top five i can run
down it real quick sure yeah let's just plow through that okay let's plow through that so
anderson fotm in michigan where which went went to Joe Biden. So congrats to Michigan.
Where the hell is it?
Stand by.
I have it here somewhere.
Here we are.
Number five, the A-Team.
Fun fact.
That was one of my original picks.
A-Team was on my list.
So was Perfect Strangers, by the way.
Really?
Yes.
Wow.
Okay.
Composed by Mike Post, who inspired the Pete Townshend song,
Mike Post theme.
Of course, Mike Post has composed
a lot of great TV themes.
Law and Order, I believe, is a Mike Post.
I'm trying to think of the other ones,
but that's a fun fact.
Okay.
Number four, WKRP in Cincinnati.
I also agree, Anderson, as you heard.
Fun fact, it peaked at number 65 on the billboard chart.
Coincidentally, I had the same fun fact,
but I did not steal it from you, I promise.
Okay.
Wow, I almost feel like there could be some spoilers,
but here's one that I almost kicked out.
This was on my short list, and I almost kicked it out.
Kids in the Hall, which is having an average weekend,
I think is the name of that jam,
by shadowy men on a Shadowy Planet.
And his fun fact is that they won the Instrumental Group of the Year
at the 1992 Juno Awards.
So how are we doing so far?
Okay, number two on the Anderson list is a song I slid into Cam's DMs
to say I hope Stu picks this song,
because I wanted to kick it out tonight, but it didn't make my top five.
Greatest American Hero.
Believe it
or not, I'm walking on air.
Now that
show, I know mainly from
Seinfeld because it was a bit
in an episode. George could say... I loved that show
and I loved that song.
Right.
Sorry, what was the premise of the show?
It was like a bumbling superhero?
Is that what it was?
Yes, like a reluctant superhero.
Yeah.
Okay, I saw one scene from one episode,
but it's stuck in my head where
a car swerved to miss a dog and it crashed
and somehow this superhero was telepathically telling the dog
to drag them from the car
before it blew up.
And I only saw this one scene from the one episode
but literally 40 years later
I remember that scene.
And big hit song
and the song charted on the radio as well.
Yeah, so the fun fact from Anderson
I feel like that's from the Matrix, Anderson
also written by Mike Post.
It peaked at number three.
And the final song in Anderson's top five,
Welcome Back, Cotter.
He says it's a great song.
I played it actually waiting for you guys to show up in the Zoom chat here.
Great show, great song, and definitely those are all great picks.
Anderson already beating Cam.
Endless Love kept that song from becoming the number one song,
so it got stuck at number two.
We're still counting ballots over here.
And let's kick out I Can't Wait, Love This.
I think Stu and I have a lot of common ground with these early shows.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Before you play this.
Stop the music, stop the rock and roll.
I need you to know and the listeners to know and Sammy Cohn to know.
Oh.
This is a song that I heard early on in life and it stuck with me.
This song is an institution.
This is a song that inspires.
This is a song that speaks of great weather and friendly faces.
This is a song that sings about magic carpet rides.
This is a song that really sort of tells you directions on how to get to a
happier place.
If you may play the song. Sunny day, sweeping the clouds away
On my way to where the air is clean
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?
Call and play, everything's A-OK.
Friendly neighbors there, that's where we meet.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street get How to get to Sesame Street
How to get to Sesame Street
How to get to Sesame Street
And then usually you hear like a harmonica like
And then we go into like the show.
And that is Stevie Wonder, right?
Probably.
Probably.
Sesame Street, guys. Come on. No, I love it. I love it. What do you think, Cam? go into the show. And that is Stevie Wonder, right? Probably.
Sesame Street, guys.
Come on.
No, I love it. I love it.
What do you think, Cam?
I love the track.
Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?
Can't go wrong.
Fine, fine, fine choice.
The oldest song in Sesame Street's history dating back to the show's beginning on this week in 1969.
How about that?
Wow.
Happy birthday, Sesame Street.
51 years of Sesame Street.
Now, Stu, I don't have many years on you, a couple years,
but it won't matter for this show, I guess.
But literally, if I could call my mom up like I did when Kenny Rogers passed away,
if I could call my mom up, add her, patch her in here,
she'd tell you that I just got put in front of the tv for sesame street it's like that was like all of us did
raised me sesame street raised us you know i got my news from hi ho kermit the frog here for
sesame street news uh ernie and bert uh just great guys ernie and bert so funny so progressive
did you have a favorite segment like a favorite uh yeah ernie and Bert. So funny, so progressive. Did you have a favorite segment? Like a favorite? Yeah, Ernie and Bert.
Anytime they were on, they were just hilarious.
You know, a hairy monster, good for a few laughs.
A cookie monster, always getting into those cookies.
Oscar the Grouch, just a real, you know, you had to deal with Oscar.
Of course, the human beings on the show.
Let's not leave out Susan and Olivia and Gordon, Maria, Linda, who was hearing impaired.
Let's not leave out the late, great Mr. Hooper, David, who took over the store.
Louise, Maria.
Did I already say Maria?
Did you say Gordon yet?
I did say Gordon.
And, of course, the man who originally sang the Sesame Street theme, Bob McGrath.
Of course.
Of course. They obviously went with the children's choir
version.
Can we shout out, I almost kicked her out
when we kicked out our Canadian woman, which I think
was, was it last week or the week before? I can't even
remember now. I think it was two weeks ago.
I almost kicked her out and I was introduced
to her because she had a regular appearance
on my show, Sesame Street, when I was a young
man, but Buffy St. Marie.
That's right.
Buffy was a big deal.
Want some stuff
here? It's composed by a gentleman
named Joe Raposo,
who actually... I know that name.
Yeah, he's done a lot of big
songs,
let's just say. I don't have
them in front of me. That list is too long, but the man's a legend. The lyrics, let's just say. I don't have them in front of me.
That list is too long, but the man's a legend.
The lyrics, it's funny.
In his book, The History of Sesame Street, Michael Davis called the theme jaunty and deceptively simple.
Raposo wrote the lyrics to the song with John Stone and Bruce Hart.
Not of the Hart family, I don't think.
Stone considered the song a musical masterpiece and a
lyrical embarrassment.
I'm Alan Cross.
Raposo enlisted
jazz harmonica player Toots.
Oh, who just passed away.
Like two months ago.
No, not like Toots
and the Maytals.
I think that's who we're talking about.
Well, he was like a reggae artist.
Would that make sense?
I don't know.
It doesn't.
You can't be named Toots when there's a Toots already.
Yeah, that's true.
There's only going to be one Toots.
And then you've got, the song is a big song.
You know what I'm saying?
Originally, I told you it was sung by Bob McGrath.
Now, Cam, actually, there was a version of this song that was remixed
that was in Cam's heavy rotation back when we used to hang out,
you know, 20-some-odd years ago.
You know, Cam is a very big into Euro dance.
I was going to say, there was like a rave version.
There was, and we're about to blow your minds with Smarties' Sesame Treat.
was and we're about to blow your minds with Smarties
Sesame Treat.
Like a jungle beat.
Shout out to DJ Farby.
Oh, no.
I don't know if you can hear it, but...
Can you hear it, Cam?
Oh, yeah.
So, a very popular TV single that meant many of us bought at LA Music.
Sesame Street by Smarties.
Wow.
I remember
there was a
around the same
time, maybe a
bit later, there
was sort of a
dance version of
the Price is
Right theme.
Yeah.
I hope we're
not counting that
down.
I don't want to
steal anyone's
thunder, much
like Stu kind
of fucked with
me before.
My fun facts.
But yeah, there
was definitely a
bit of a trend in the 90s for a bit
every once you know every few years you hear one of these like old retro um my question for you
yes i feel like you once had our mutual friend uh retro ontario at conroy on and you
you talked about the funky chimes that's correct i was thinking of that when we got the outro music
uh yeah now why why did you talk about that with director on here i'm trying to remember we kicked
out we prior before there was ever a pandemic and a pandemic friday uh we kicked out the jams
so uh essentially in fact i'm gonna close with a song that ed introduced me to but uh basically he was bringing in like theme songs
and telling stories about them and he brought in that funky chimes closing to sesame streets which
which is just slaps as the kids would say i remember you said it's a funky as all hell i
think that that was what i was about to say now i'm consistent it's funky as all hell by the way
speak of sesame street i don't know if you guys saw,
I just dropped a link here
that I saw floating around Twitter
to a large degree,
which was John John and Harry counting.
I think sort of a...
Oh, right.
The election counting.
60!
Yes, exactly.
Like, what a feel good end.
Oh my God,
has there ever been,
with the exception of like a six-year-old stew stone god has there ever been with the exception of like a
six-year-old stew stone has there ever been a cuter kid on tv than john john number one for
sure john john's the man john john like fucking killed it and uh what a what a character what a
piece of work i love that kid love him love john john yeah i know that i remember this clip is
harry monster's no slouch.
No slouch.
No, he brought it too.
He was like kind of the Ron McClane to Jon Jon.
Harry brought it.
You know, like Harry, he was a man that when he appeared,
or a monster, I should say, he appeared with purpose.
He was underappreciated because he never got the headlines
that, you know, a cookie monster or a Grover or...
A cookie monster was a whore.
You know, he put his face everywhere.
He was on every bath mat, every shampoo bottle.
Harry Monster is an acquired taste, you know, like Yacht Rock.
Harry Monster is like the Jim Clancy of Sesame Street.
Like, you know, you don't really notice him,
but at the end of the episode, it's like,
holy shit, he's, you know, 220 innings, 15 wins.
Shout out to that Worrywart Tell like, holy shit, he's, you know, 220 innings, 15 wins. Shout out to that Worrywart
telemonster. Yeah, he's
stressful.
Okay, here, let me see.
That was the bonus again. A lot of,
like I said, a lot of, what do we call them again?
You called them not fun facts. They're called
mind blows. That's right.
You coined the phrase mind blows.
You don't have to talk over the Smarties song. They're called mind blows. That's right. You coined the phrase mind blows. Yeah, we can get off this below.
You don't have to talk over the Smarties song.
All right.
I enjoyed that, though.
Okay.
Here you go.
Here's a jam from something a little more current,
because I did WKRP and Dukes of Hazzard,
and 10-year-old Mike was loving both shows.
But here we go with something a little more current. All right, guys, this is Come On, Come On.
Can you name this band, Cam?
Yeah, this is the Von Bondies, I believe, out of Detroit, Michigan.
Correctamundo.
Now, what TV show is this a theme of?
Great question, absolutely great question
Oh I forgot that part of this
Here let me bring it down
I have multiple windows
Do you think it's easy to produce this show here?
Come here, okay bringing that down
and I'm just here to tell you
you mentioned the Von Bondys
this was
on their 2004 album Pa Pawn Shop Heart.
It's fair to say this is the only Vaughn Bondys song
that the average Joe knows.
It was by far their biggest hit, if you can call it that.
I sure knew of it, but it was the theme song
for a show I watched with Dennis Leary of all people.
Who can name the show that starred Dennis Leary
and had this as the opening theme?
Anyone? Bueller?
Stu, you got a guess out there?
The one where he's like a fireman?
That's right. It's called Rescue Me.
Matter 45 or Rescue Me?
Rescue Me.
In fact, here's a fun fact.
I enjoyed the use of this song as the theme song
to rescue me so much that many moons ago when i thought i would have a spin-off podcast so there
was toronto miked and one of my frequent guests was my buddy elvis uh i thought hey let's have a
new podcast which is not toronto miked but which is called your blog sucks and there was an origin story for that name but basically we would uh we would have an episode where you know I would say
you know what sucks Elvis and you go what sucks Mike and I would say something that was like a pet
peeve something that I thought sucked maybe it was like oh you know it's impossible to get a flu shot
appointment and the supplies I would rant about something and then he would do it and we would go
back and forth great premise right your blog? Your blog sucks. Great idea.
I thought it was great.
Well, I think there was a... I'm not
even kidding. I believe there was a cable access
show on Newton Cable at the
same time that Stu and I co-hosted
Overtime Sports Talk called The Wine
Club or The Wine Line.
So same kind of idea.
Yeah, it was sort of like a guy
kvetching.
So that's what this
was we went back and forth kvetching as you say and we did 10 episodes and i realized like people
for some reason people just wanted toronto mic so i said well i canceled the series after 10 episodes
but those i didn't like i knew very few people had subscribed to the your blog sucks uh feed but
there were a lot of people subscribed to toronto Mike so I just took those 10 episodes and dropped them into the Toronto Mike
feed so if you actually want to hear not that anyone would but if you do want to hear those
10 episodes of your blog sucks which had an intro by Humble Howard and that song by the Vaughn
Bondi's as the theme song uh they're on the feed. Just search this Toronto Mic'd feed for Your Blog Sucks.
There's 10 of them and enjoy.
There was a listener who loved them.
Robbie J, his name was, and it's not Rob Johnston.
It's just his name's Rob J,
who absolutely loved Your Blog Sucks.
Like I think he liked Your Blog Sucks
better than Toronto Mic'd.
So, but there you go.
I was gonna say, the only other thing I really remember
about the Va Bondys is
I think it was this band
the singer famously got
punched out by Jack White
they believe there was some
wow I can't imagine that
Jack could punch anyone out
yeah it was like pretty chill dude
this was because I think
I don't know if they were rival bands but obviously both
kind of Detroit bands that were there sort of in the mix I feel like it was this band that I think they're i don't know if they were rival bands but obviously both kind of detroit bands or they're sort of in the mix i feel like it was this band that that i think you're
right practice happened i think you're right well that is a fun fact okay uh wake up stew it's time
to kick out another cam jam okay um just checking out my notes breaking news like donald trump is on
tv right now going through state by state saying he won every state and he's saying
he's basically saying like I won
Georgia by big numbers
and all of a sudden
on election night I won and now the numbers are shrinking
and shrinking. He doesn't understand.
They're just counting votes.
Right. They're counting legally.
Yeah, they're just...
Anyway, we're not going to talk about that.
They're doing what they did every election ever.
They always did this.
This happened.
It's just he never...
Obviously, he never paid attention
because he had clearly won in 2016
and didn't have to wait for any of this.
Quite the time we live in.
We live in a crazy time.
I do have a note.
So, yeah, I just saw it pop up on my New York Times thing
about how he's holding a news conference
and they say MSNBC is not airing it.
ABC, CBS and NBC are
airing it apparently but they have a caption
that notes that the
votes are still being counted.
So basically in a nutshell they're basically
like here's your president
don't listen to him. He's wrong
about everything.
Sorry I know we're not talking
about this. Can I get a small soapbox?
And I don't often do this
because I'm going to step into...
You know, as a guy who works for a social media company,
there's definitely lots of things we can do better too.
But I was listening...
Sorry, this is the annual part
or the weekly part of the show
where I talk about another podcast.
That's okay.
I was listening to the press box from the Ringer Network
this morning as they got ready for work.
And they were sort of talking, you know,
should TV networks be held to the same accountability
as, you know, platforms like Twitter and YouTube?
You know, maybe don't put this stuff on the air
if he's just, you know, kind of blatantly lying.
Because I know CNBC did like a cut-in
on election night
where they actually said,
okay, we'll go back to this in a second,
but by the way,
what he just said is not true.
So I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that.
I say that as someone who, you know,
works for a tech company,
but I mean, it's kind of an interesting point.
But you guys have started,
you guys do it too.
I saw when Trump was talking about how there was like a fraud.
I saw the Twitter warnings about how like that's unproven and, you know.
Yeah, I mean, like his timeline right now, I mean, you can look at it.
Tire fire.
But there's a lot of warnings currently.
On the bright side, though, there was a while we were recording a
huge batch of votes came in for pennsylvania and uh 70 of those votes were for biden
so i i would say i was i was keeping a pretty close eye on the pennsylvania votes and um there
was one twitter i forget what's called but it's just it's like an automated one that just
has like regular updates and i was like each time there was an update i was calculating it was all between like 62 to like 69
or 71 for pennsylvania with these new batches so again like game six leafs kings yeah vibes
they're coming you can all right you know you do that but i you can you can also say you know when
the leafs were up 4-1 in that game seven against the Bruins 7 years ago, like, they were just
they were coming, and you could feel it coming
and you felt like there was nothing we can do, it's
coming, it's coming, and it happened, and
yeah, okay. So, are you ready
to kick out your fourth jam, Cam
Gordon? Yeah, god,
sorry, I'm just thinking about that, that was
awful. Like, that game, that was so
fucking bad. Anyway, go ahead. But I always think
if we did end up, let's say we won that game
like we were supposed to, they might not
blow that shit up. And that team was never
going to win a Stanley Cup. I'm not saying this team's
going to win a Stanley Cup, but this team doesn't exist
if they don't blow up that Kessel-Fenuf thing.
You know what I mean? So I feel like
by losing that, they said,
okay, get rid of the Fenuf-Kessel thing
and then you get an Austin Matthews
and you draft a Mitch Marner.
Was the goaltender the guy?
James Reimer.
I wasn't sure if it was Bernier.
No, I think he came
the next year or something.
Reimer, Reimer, gotta be starting Reimer.
Shout out to
Dan Gould Brown.
Here is Cam Gordon's fourth jam.
We deliver the goods on street sense.
I'll buy that.
I'm beautiful.
So am I.
Where's my money go?
I just don't know.
It really makes me tense.
I might have my bread if I use my head.
I need some street sense.
I'm a simple guy with a VCR.
I apologize for the potato quality of this audio.
This is a bad source here. Not a ton of street sense.
But here is a show, finally, a show that stars in fotm yeah i always like to weave in if i can where i can so
this is uh and it was mainly this second song we're hearing the other thing was the actual song
gotcha yeah so where's my money go uh which was partially the theme song for Street Sense,
but I think started as the outro music.
That version that we just heard was actually sung by some of the cast members,
including FOTM Jonathan Horrens.
But the actual theme that opened the show for a few seasons
was actually sung by none other than Thrush Hermit.
Wow!
From Nova Scotia,ia right that's right yeah which is kind of exciting um that this was a great show i mainly put this on
just to talk about street sense i know we you know talk quite a bit probably a bit more than
we should about things like silverman helps and watch it buddy i love this shit yeah like this was just a good show for kids you know learn something it was
kind of like adbusters junior um but also like very funny didn't take itself too seriously but
you know you you'd always learn something and i don't know like i i always thought we were sort
of lucky where sue and i went to school where you could take like business classes and you know learn some stuff about like I don't know like banking or economics or whatever
if you wanted to um but you know for kids who didn't have that opportunity this at least you
get some kind of little uh education on just consumerism and you know don't believe advertising
and all that right media literacy kind of ahead of its time for what was no you
nailed it totally ahead of its time and like literally i learned a lot of lessons from that
show like a lot of like check simple things that you know check your sort check your sources when
you learn something new like when stewstone we've lost him to cnn i think but uh when when you get a
breaking breaking news like first question you'll check your sources.
Is it a valid source?
Whatever, all that stuff.
Like all these simple things
that people take,
you know,
that we were lucky enough
to kind of get that education.
And like, yeah,
don't believe the marketing hype
to borrow,
to paraphrase Chuck D.
We all remember Fit for the Pit.
Oh my God, yeah.
And if the product was like
complete horseshit, they would throw it into if the product was like complete horse shit,
they would throw it into the,
it was like a sewer grate from what I remember.
They would pop it open, it would go in,
there'd be a little explosion.
You're off mic again, by the way.
I don't know what the hell he said.
I know.
He gets quiet now and then.
Yes, he's elsewhere.
Okay, yeah.
Projecting that mic, Mr. Gordon.
Anyway, I was just going to say, I also
like this show was filmed in Halifax
because it seems almost like
There you are. Did you turn
it on?
It's got the little dongle
Look, I'll pay for your fucking microphone,
okay? I have a PayPal account.
I'll get one for next week.
Send me the invoice. I'm happy
to do it.
Anyway, other than Jonathan Torrens,
this show had a series of guests.
Stu's not here. Can you hear me, Mike?
You're very quiet.
Is that true, Mike? Yeah, but that's good
right there. Whatever you just did there is good.
Okay. I'm literally
holding it up to my left, so that's okay.
Some of the other notable cast members
or hosts
little loud
okay
like seriously is this okay
this is okay please proceed
ignore that Stuart Stone
I was going to say Stu's trying to throw me off my game
it's not easy to do that
keep going
I love the selection and I love Street to his tricks. I love the selection
and I love Street Sense.
And of course, I love Jonathan Torrance. Please continue.
And Benita Ha, who's a big crush of mine.
Yeah, Benita Ha, who's now
a nurse in BC,
which is kind of interesting. I had no idea.
She still dabbles in acting on the side.
Probably I'd say the two other most
notable hosts were Kim Dion,
who I remember I had some dealings with because she used to be a host on
Entertainment Tonight Canada for a few years,
doing some stuff with her professionally.
We had some talent dealings.
With Roz Weston?
With Roz, that's right, F-O-T-M, Roz Weston.
And also, I don't really remember this,
but I guess Connie Walker was a host of Street Sense.
This show was actually on for longer than I remember.
Yeah, you know what?
We aged out of it,
but like a good show of that nature,
it kept going.
But I did age out of that show.
1989 to 2006.
Final thought on this,
and Mike, I'm guessing maybe you've seen this before.
There's actually a really good Vice article, just sort of an oral history of street sense talks to a lot of people
who worked on the show i think talks with jonathan torrence has a lot of old photos are really cool
um you can google that and dig it up why don't we do more oral histories i feel like we're kind
of doing it but not the same kind of format like i like it wouldn't be difficult for us to kind of do that why don't we do some oral histories yeah i think it's all in the same spirit
and mike i've suggested this before if everyone anyone whether it's a podcast or a blog entry
an oral history of shakespeare my butt i think you'd be the perfect candidate to do that and and
that album needs an oral history because it's obviously such a land and i feel like i might
have done it already i I just need an editor.
Probably.
Yeah, you could cobble it together.
I'm sure you can pick up all the archives.
Amazing.
Okay.
Stu, do we still have you?
I do want to just share.
I know that people don't want us to be CNN,
and we're not trying to be CNN here.
But this is kind of historic, and it's happening in real time,
that NBC, CBS, and all cut cut away from the trump
speech when he uh started making false claims okay tell us because i'm just reading about it
obviously i actually am trying to host a fucking show here stew and basically shit on every he said
he won every state and every state was cheating against him he blamed big media he blamed tech
big tech he blamed the suppression polls.
He's calling the pollsters. They were in on it.
Everybody is in on it. It's all a conspiracy.
He's taking everybody to court and their
cousin. Fox and CNN
both shitting all over this.
And I have a feeling that
shit's about to get called very soon here,
guys. Very soon. I was just going to say,
is this almost like poetic justice
while that's going on? The guy who works
for one of these companies is literally talking about Street
Sense and some of the stuff we learned at Street
Sense.
That's good if my boss is listening to this
and she won't even know what Street Sense is.
What a
night to be doing this in tandem.
You know,
we're 74,000
votes away from it flipping to Biden and it's inevitable. I mean, it's the pencil. The pencil, it's like we're 74,000 votes away from it flipping to Biden.
And it's inevitable.
I mean, the math, it's just math.
I mean, they've got fucking Peter Zezel's on winning face-offs like.
Oh, the late great.
Wendell.
You know, he's passed away.
I always forget that.
And then I was watching an old time.
I think they had a classic game on the other night and I was watching a bit of it.
And Peter, it was us versus Vancouver.
So Canucks versus Leafs.
And Zezel was playing. This is, I guess, 94 or whatever. And Zezel, man, I was thinking a bit of it and Peter's it was us versus Vancouver so Canucks versus Leafs and Zezel was playing this is I guess 94 or whatever and uh Zezel man I was thinking of
Peter Zezel I'm thinking I can't believe that guy's dead like uh more reason than ever to attend
the Ridley Funeral Home service and remember the great Peter Zezel. He also arrived in Toronto
alongside uh the only player I ever had on the back of a Leafs jersey, and I still have it to this day, which is the great Bob Rouse.
Wow.
Gilmore to Bobby Rouse fame when they came over from the Capitals for...
Oh, don't tell me, Mike Gardner.
No.
Ally of Freight.
Ally of Freight was too late.
Yeah, because Gardner was a Capital.
Hell of a slap shot.
Oh.
Oh, and fast.
Fast as fuck, as they say.
That guy was the...
He had all the tools.
I don't know.
I won't get into the whole dressing room controversy with...
What was I going to say?
Gary Lehman's wife would agree with that statement, I would say.
And I have that anyway.
Breaking news.
Hold on.
Stu Stone has breaking news.
The lead in Georgia down to 3 000 now oh my god okay we gotta
go through like hurry up out there and see her this is about to lose boys this is about to be
called we're we're gonna i say a word from a friend i just got word from a friend i'm not
gonna name him but he happens to work in the pr industry for a major gambling website i'm not
gonna name the website okay but they big, as big as it gets.
And I will say that he is telling me right now via text
that they are trying to push any of these channels to call the election
so that they can be the first betting website to pay out the presidential election bets.
Wow.
They want to call it.
Well, okay, because Georgia enough is not...
As you know, I know you keep talking about Fox News,
but Arizona hasn't been called by
most places. Fox News and the
Associated Press have called it. But I'm looking at the
numbers. You can't call it with these numbers.
I'm here to say that when Georgia flips,
it's going to get it to
269. Nevada,
his lead is there. Pennsylvania,
his lead is now down to 64,000 in Pennsylvania
from 500,000
two days ago. It's a wrap.
They have 7% more
to go in Pennsylvania. Okay, let's keep going
here of the jams.
Let's proceed.
Hopefully it happens before we sign off.
All right, listen. I want to thank you guys
in my next song. I want to thank you
guys. I know that Friends of guys. In my next song, I want to thank you guys.
And I know that Friends of Toronto,
my FOTMs,
this is,
I thank them.
And, you know,
many years ago,
me and my buddy,
K-Blad Jeff,
we've been in the podcast world
back in the day.
And this was one of the songs
that we played all the time.
This is such a special song to me
and all of the friends of Stew Stone.
You know who you are.
Cambrio.
Led by Leva Famke. No, it's Linda. Everybody else. special song to me and all of the friends of stew stone you know who you are cambrio by uh lead led
by leva famke uh and now it's linda everybody else everybody else linda and the rest of mike
mike the whole gang right you know who they are this is really for them it is an excuse to play
this song for them more than for this topic so if you're listening right now and you are a friend of Stu Stone's, this song is for you.
Thank you for being a friend
Travel down the road and back again
Your heart is true
You're a pal and a confidant
And if you threw a party That's a banger.
That's a banger.
That's a banger.
That's a banger.
Golden Girls.
Wow.
You know, we only have one left, okay?
One left.
You talk about a fucking jam.
Yeah.
The Golden Girls.
Cam's never seen an episode.
I'll bet you you're right. Cam, have you ever seen an episode?
He's disappeared.
We lost him.
I will say this.
This ain't no two-season show.
180 episodes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
180 episodes.
Yep.
Bea Arthur, Betty White,
Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty.
Wow.
Yep.
And, of course,
Bea Arthur decided she was done.
And that meant the show was done.
The Golden Palace.
The Golden fucking Palace.
Well, I was going to get to that.
Okay, I'm sorry.
We're talking about the great...
Now, I think about FOTMs when I think of some of these people.
Of course, Liva Famke
as the Blanche Devereaux uh she was the sexy one very sultry uh rose i would say roses uh
mike's wife just for argument's sake
it's a nice lady you know he doesn't like to cause too many problems.
Of course, Betty White is Cam.
And she's still with us.
And the very toughest El Getty is Bojana.
Abso-fucking-lutely.
Abso-fucking-lutely.
You know, outside shuffling gravel.
Yes, fun fact, of course, Bea Arthur's character, Dorothy,
ends up marrying Leslie Nielsen, one of the great Canadian treasures.
Absolutely.
And they end up doing the Golden Palace.
Empty Nest, also a spinoff.
Let's talk about the song, Thank You for Being a Friend.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Was it Leslie Nielsen or was it Richard Mulligan?
No, Richard Mulligan was from Empty Nest,
which is a spinoff of Golden Girls.
And there was like a dog, like a really big dog, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
Carry on.
I will carry on.
I will say that Thank You For Being A Friend was actually,
there was a full length, much like The Family Ties, uh was recorded and sung by andrew gold of all people andrew ward andrew
spent two weeks two whole weeks at number 11 on the charts how about that in canada it went to
number five on the charts how about that why don't we listen to a little bit of this mind blow, the Andrew Gold version, which was on the radio.
And Liva Famke used it slow dance to this song back in the day.
She knows.
Oh, yeah, we've won.
Here we go.
Let's have a listen.
Thank you for being a friend.
Travel down the road and back again.
Your heart is true.
You're a pal and a confidant.
I'm not ashamed to say.
I'm ashamed to say I don't know Andrew Gold.
Is Andrew Gold somebody I should know?
Well, Andrew Gold, he's just a golden guy.
No, I just wonder if I'm missing out.
Is Andrew Gold some famous musician?
Yeah, you are.
You are.
First of all, he basically influenced most of the sound of yacht rock in the 70s.
Wow. He played oninda ronstadt's records
uh you know he's most successful for this thank you for being a friend but he was a studio guy
uh who worked with 10cc as cam alluded to them earlier um so just a guy that was like one of
those uh prolific sort of musicians on the lac in the seventies that got a crack. Thank you for being a friend.
Not in love was a big 10 CC jam.
Not in love.
None.
Yeah.
And dreadlock holiday.
Sorry for interrupting.
No,
I'm done.
I just,
I love all of my friends and I thank them for being my friends.
And obviously in the last, during this pandemic, when things could have been down in the dumps,
when life was kicking us all in the nuts, when we could have just given up and said,
you know what? F this.
We decided to come together every Friday for Pandemic Fridays,
and we made friends, deep-rooted connections.
Leave it, Famke, is my friend.
It's because of this program.
We made a franchise
like this is you know
Mike after your big failure of your blog
sucks you know your secondary franchise
pandemic
this show doesn't suck that's for sure
you know I learned from that
to keep it in the Toronto Mike umbrella
like have you noticed this is an episode of Toronto Mike
it's not an episode of a
new podcast called Pandemic Friday.
Absolutely.
Well, Mike, as you know,
that's why I always,
and I think you hopefully appreciate this,
I always like weave in other episodes
of Toronto Mike.
Oh, no.
I will say this.
I totally appreciate that
because, you know,
I know you listen
and that means a lot to me.
So thank you for listening.
And Stu,
I know you don't listen,
but I still love you, man.
Like, I'm so glad
I've listened I've listened to shows now listen to be fair Cam is an actual podcast aficionado
he listens to podcasts specifically yours and if it wasn't for Cam I wouldn't even know about
Toronto Mike of course I have not I have not shifted I have not shifted uh there yet where
I'm like listening so it's not like I'm not listening Toronto Mike I'm not listening to any
podcasts and if I have listened to a podcast,
it has been Toronto Mike.
Oh, you're amazing.
Now, I know maybe I'm getting a little sentimental here
thinking that we're very close
to having a president-elect, Joe Biden.
And, you know, not to bury the lead,
but I mean, a woman of color is the vice president-elect.
Well, it hasn't happened yet,
so let's not change it yet, okay?
No, I know, but in this, I just want to,
Cam, do you realize a few years ago...
Don't give a concession speech yet.
No, it's not a concession speech.
We have time.
This is about you.
A few years ago, Cam, when you came over into my basement here
and you sat here and we got to know each other
on a recording of Toronto Mike,
and you mentioned Stu Stone, and just in passing,
you're like, I went to school with this guy,
and he was in My Pet Monster, he's in Donnie Darko.
You start running these things off, and you're like,
you know, you would really like this guy you should have him on and then from
that conversation of course uh you introduced me to stew and i asked you would you like to come on
and talk and the rest is history but like this is how it works i always thought that cam would
introduce me to my future wife but i'll take this this is better okay this is better yeah no mike i mean i say this with all sincerity
it's one of the things i love about not only your podcast but just sort of this whole ecosystem
that you've built and i've said this before to you but you should be like very proud of what
you've done like it's really impressive and it's kind of weird, but in all the best ways.
And again, I say this is putting on my tech hat.
I see what you're doing is sort of the way
that a lot of media is going,
where you might not be the CBC or you might not be CTV,
but the people that are into what you're doing
are really, really into what you're doing.
And I think you should be very proud of what you've created and and just you've got this whole spectrum of other podcasts and uh
you know and now you're even branching out into kind of the dana levinson and the
you know kind of like more lifestyle-y type stuff and uh yeah it's just i don't know
it's impressive what you've done in my opinion It's not for nothing. You were beaming once before, but it's not like that anymore.
Can't hold the moods you've known.
No, they're not stuck in stone.
You were patient once before, but it's not like that anymore.
What is this downside that you speak of?
What is this feeling you're so sure of?
Does this song resonate with any of you Zoomers out there?
Yeah, Cam or Stu or Levi. Does this song resonate with any of you Zoomers out there? Who?
Yeah, Cam or Stu or Levi.
Do any of you know this song?
No clue.
No clue.
Okay, Cam, no clue from you?
No.
It sounds kind of like a 70s song, doesn't it?
No, it's not. But I will tell you, this is the, here,
this song is by a band from Detroit,
another Detroit, Michigan band.
It's all about Michigan today.
Shout out to Anderson.
The High Strung is the name of this band,
and this song is called The Luck You Got,
and it was on their 2006 album Moxie Bravo.
And this is the theme song to the u.s version of the show shameless i take it none of you have ever seen the american version i have been told
that uh my father my late father was quite a jack gallagher so i have to watch the show now to to
sort of connect the dots there but I'm assuming that's not a compliment
it's sort of tough to say
because it's not a compliment
but that character is
there is some sympathetic qualities
to that character
if you will
now that character is excellently portrayed
of course by the great William H. Macy
yeah he's a great actor
absolutely and this song is a song I did not know about the high strung and I did not know this song by the great William H. Macy. Yeah, he's a great actor. Absolutely.
And this song is a song I did not know about the high strung,
and I did not know this song until...
And by the way, I will point out,
Shameless is a show I bailed on in the fourth season,
so it's probably, I don't know what it's on now,
nine or ten or something.
So I actually haven't watched it in a long time,
but I did enjoy it for a few seasons,
and I loved this theme song,
and I thought, you can't just go WKRP
and you can't just go
Dukes of Hazzard so I thought I'd throw in
some Vaughn Bondys and some High Strung
because they're just kick-ass songs that I sort of
enjoyed as opening themes to
more recent programs.
Are they like a current
band but they sound like
one of these garage...
Well they remind me of the Vaughn Bondies to be honest
and that sort of sounds like a bit of like
I guess that comes from like the
the strokes and
the hives and I'm trying to
think of all the the's
the killers are they in there
the vines is a good one yeah all the
the's
right yeah of course I do I saw them at
Downsview Park
actually at an
Edge Fest.
So this brings us
to the final round
and I think we all
have some,
we all have some,
what are they called
again?
Not fun facts.
Remind me,
what are they called?
What's the title?
Mind Blows.
Mind Blows.
I'm going to write
that down.
I just want to say
real quick,
I bet you by the end
of this show, we should have a
prediction like who's going to be the president by the next
time we record. And the answer still might
be, we don't know, by the way.
I was going to say, I have some
breaking news. Let's hear it.
Mike, if you could just check your DMs. I have a
little intro music to this. This is mainly
to get Stu all
worked up just by playing this
song. Okay, let me play it.
If you ever take a trip
down to Cobb County, Georgia,
you better read the signs.
Respect the law
and overuse of hard times.
I get that reference.
Cobb County.
I'm not even going to offer
any commentary on this,
but in the actual
Cobb County, Georgia,
Biden has 56.3%
of the votes,
Trump at 42. Cobb County is Georgia, Biden has 56.3% of the votes, Trump at 42.
Cobb County is not even... This is, of course... It's outside
Atlanta, right? But it's near
Atlanta, but it's... Am I right?
I guess it's, yeah, like maybe it seems like it's like
a couple of suburbs removed, but yeah,
I mean, Biden killing it in Cobb County,
home of the big boss man,
the angry prison guard.
Rest in peace, by the way, boss man. Yeah, right. And to quote a great friend of the big boss man, the angry prison guard. Rest in peace, by the way, boss man.
Yeah, great.
And to quote a great friend of the program,
this is for you, boss man.
This is for you, boss man.
My final jam here.
I need to preface this by saying
I have a trigger warning to myself.
I have difficulty with this song,
but I'll explain it after you give us the fun facts.
I was going to say, this could also possibly fit in spooky jams i i got a big problem with this jam certainly
would have been better than any of your other crappy spooky games oh yeah we got a lot of
flack for that episode i don't know if you read the don't read the comments well you guys just
like you guys just like out snobbed yourselves you know oh the monster mash i am a man of the people the graveyard smash oh people come people come to swish alley for the chicken what was giving
them the chicken what was the final forget the election in the u.s what was the final results
of the uh poll you did cam about whether the monster match was it was a graveyard smash
i was gonna say like uh the it sucks it won the electoral college, but it did
win the popular vote. It was like 56%.
Yes, it's a good song, which is
ridiculous. Not proud of the people
on Twitter.
I'm going to play your fucking jam here, and then
you're going to tell us about it.
That listener that was listening
in the van with her kids, she's going to be very
distraught hearing you swear like this.
I'm working blue today.
Shout out to that soccer mom in the van with her kids. She's going to be very distraught hearing you swear like this. I'm working blue today. Shout out to that soccer mom in the van.
I've been very public about what this song does to me,
but I'll save that for in a couple of minutes from now.
Here we go.
Hopefully it doesn't make you horny because we don't want that.
It does not make me horny.
That's magic shadows.
Yeah, good one! I just wet my pants
yeah
alright you go first
because this is your jam cam and then I'll
tell you my story
so this is Doctor Who
Doctor Who? cam and then i'll tell you my story so this is doctor who the doctor who
that was the original theme song to doctor who doctor who yeah yeah yeah
uh not bad of you do it again it makes me giggle okay recorded and released by Ron Grainier in 1964.
I don't think I realized this song was quite as old.
If you would ask me how old
the original Doctor Who or when it
came on TV,
I'll preface this. I've never really seen
an episode. I was certainly familiar with this song
as a kid because it's just...
Wait, wait, wait. You picked a song
from a show you've never watched?
No, that's okay. That's valid. I'm going to give
him this one. I'm going to give him this one. Why is that valid?
Tell me why that's okay.
The same reason why you changed
the channel and hid under the bed.
It's a song that impacted him. He definitely heard it.
But you heard it and you liked the
theme, but you never thought
to actually try watching it. I'm in the same boat.
I like the theme. I'm just not... I'm in the same boat. I'm in the same boat i'm in the same boat i'm in the same boat as cam i like never seen star wars never watched
star trek never seen doctor let's not get crazy now i'm not gonna put myself in that you know
what if you guys can't deal with that that goes for double for you leave out camp cut um you can
just deal with it um do you know what the sounds you're hearing in this song are i always can't is
it called a fair ofone or something like that?
What's the term for that instrument that makes that sound?
All right, like a pheromone?
What's in Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys?
Pheromone.
Pheromone, that's the word.
I'm not good at words, okay?
Why am I hosting a podcast?
Terrapene.
Yeah, I think this is primarily,
at least according to the Wikipedia page,
tape loops and a test tone
oscillators I believe it
I definitely could hear the oscillators there
a lot of oscillators
I'll just burn through some fun facts and then
we're going to have a couple of mini mind blows here
the second one probably bigger than the first
new versions of the
song were recorded in 1979
shout out to Smashing Pumpkins
1980, 1986 1987 New versions of the song were recorded in 1979. Shout out to Smashing Pumpkins.
1980, 1986, 1987.
This song was covered by a lot of rock bands and other artists,
including Pink Floyd in concert.
Stu hates this band, the Pogues, every time they come up. Oh, great Dublin band.
Yeah.
Call back. Ben Lizzy, the Dub Syndicate,
and also Orbital.
Oh, everything's Orbital now. What's up with that?
A lot of Orbital talk.
But this song's also been interpreted
by other non-rock artists.
Mike, why don't we play the first one?
I'm sure a lot of listeners have heard this one before,
but...
Hey! Doctor Who! Doctor Who! Hey! The darkness! I'm sure a lot of listeners have heard this one before, but.
I've never heard this before.
I have. It's like a mix
between Gary Glitter
and the Doctor Who song.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Mike, you've heard this.
Oh, is it like
would Doctor Demento
have played this?
No, this is like
Don Cherry's
Rockin' the Sockamera.
You know know but again
I never got to tell my story
but my story
I'll be brief
but it'll make sense
why I've never heard this
is that I loved
I would watch
Polka Dot Door
so we talked about
Sesame Street earlier
well the other show
I would watch every day
I'd go in front of TVO
and watch Polka Dot Door
when Polka Dot Door
I think it was like
6 o'clock
it would end at like
6.30
or maybe it was 6.30
read all about it
I think it was 6.30 and it would end at 7 o'clock but at the end of Polka.30 or maybe it was 6.30. Read all about it. I think it was 6.30
and it would end at 7 o'clock
but at the end of Polka Dot Door,
it would go,
I would be in front of the TV
watching my Polka Dot Door
and it would go into Doctor Who
and it would be that,
you know,
that visual,
like the tunnel vision thing
and that all.
Yeah, so scary.
So scary.
You were playing it there.
Yeah.
And I swear to you,
it would traumatize me.
Like,
it scared the shit out of me.
So for the rest of my life
until now and forever,
I avoided anything Doctor Who related.
Like, if there was anything...
Are you being, like, serious?
I'm being dead serious.
Hold on, my Aunt Sandy's calling.
Oh, take it.
Put it on speakerphone.
I love Aunt Sandy.
I don't know if you'll be able to hear her.
Okay, well, you talk to her,
and we'll...
Can you hear me?
I can hear you.
Hold on.
Hello?
Oh, yeah, I'm just doing something.
Can I call you back in like a little bit?
Yeah, I'm okay.
I'm going to call you back, but who's going to win the election?
Okay, good.
Okay, I'll call you back.
That's my hand.
She's watching the election.
Okay, well, let's...
I'm getting, like, texts from people
saying that the election has been called now.
I don't know if that's...
By who?
Happened.
Remember what StreetSend says.
Check your source.
Who called it?
I'm just being texted that Georgia,
Pennsylvania, and Nevada are all in the bag.
AZ might be a win, too.
This is going to be a blowout.
Okay, well... Let's... I don't think they're in the bag. I think they're likely, but not in the bag. AZ might be a win too. This is going to be a blowout. Let's burn through these.
I don't think they're in the bag.
I think they're likely, but not in the bag.
Mike, do you know who sings this song?
I said bag.
I said bag.
All right.
Okay.
Sorry, Cam.
Who sings what song?
The song that we just listened to,
Doctoring the Tardis, the mashup of...
I don't know anything about it.
You need to educate me.
I avoided anything.
Okay. So it's the Justified the mashup of... No, I don't know anything about it. You need to educate me. I avoided anything.
Okay, so it's the Justified Ancients of Moo Moo, also known as
the Jams, who later evolved into...
KLF.
KLF, who are going to rock.
Wow, that's pretty good. I love that.
I love that.
I actually have this album.
We're Justified, and they're
Ancients. Exactly. Shout out to uh who is it tammy
winette yep yeah all bound for moo moo land yeah and obviously uh big fan of tammy winette uh
divorce too and also stand by your man yeah her her story is like heartbreaking by the way like
just brutal shout out to the late great tammy winnett she died
too young so that's not really a mind blow that song was it was actually a pretty big hit you know
it's funny i honestly i think it's because i really did avoid anything that i'd never seen
any minute of any reboots or modern day doctor who's or anything and i really think i'd block
that out i do not have any i don't know anything about that doctor and the tardis i played that
might have been the biggest fucking hit since Gangnam Style or whatever,
and I just missed it.
Okay, well, then you probably have also never heard of this second song
we're going to hear a little snippet of here. It's like a disco version.
Shout out to dj farg
oh there it is oh fuck yeah so this was uh this is from 1979 i mean this ties in well with that
the sesame street uh track that stew played uh the the name of this band and they are from
i feel like they're from like Denmark or something.
The name of this band is Mankind.
Not to be mistaken with
Mick Foley, obviously.
Wee! Wee!
It makes
Mike want to pull out his hair.
Not a fan of this
jam, no.
Drop a big elbow on Mike's
emotions here.
Anyway, this song was actually quite a big hit
in the UK, Denmark and Australia
went to the top 30 in each one
again name of the band was Mankind
name of the song is just Doctor Who
1979
that came out
missed that one but okay
and Cam we finished
your jams now do you have enough in
the vault that you could do a sequel oh god like i've not even like scratched the surface no i'm
with you i haven't scratched the surface either to be honest with you and i think cam i want to
give him props because that last song i actually went the same route as him on my final jam as well because I feel like his song is so it was such
It was such a prolific song. You didn't even have to know watch the show, you know the song right the song so dope
It holds up. It's still kind of cool, right? I
Am gonna say that that doctor whose song is probably one of the best coolest theme songs there is maybe
second The Doctor Who song is probably one of the best, coolest theme songs there is. Maybe second to my top jam, which is in this.
I put it in the same category as the Doctor Who song as far as its awesomeness.
But go ahead and drop this. Why is Leap Day Fanfare looking so smug over this? Like similar kind of like you know creepy but closed down right
sorry here i'll fade it down so we can hear you better but uh great choice i mean this is a
this is a big jam from a big show for guys our age listen if you don't know we're talking about
knight rider starring dav David Hasselhoff
as Michael Knight,
modern-day crime fighter
who uses a technologically advanced,
artificially intelligent automobile
called Kit.
Kit, who is voiced
by the great William Daniels
who played the principal,
Mr. Feeney,
on Boy Meets World.
Val Kilmer voiced Kit
in some weird 2008 spin-off of the series and TV movie.
But Knight Rider, big show.
But you don't have to watch the show to sort of recognize the song.
This is one of those songs that sort of transcends the show because I'll get to it.
It, too, has been turned into hit songs that Lee Vefamka has danced to before.
We'll get to that in just a moment.
We'll get to that in just a moment. We'll get to that in just a moment.
Knight Rider. Cam, were you a fan?
I still like that one.
Cam, are you a fan?
Never saw it. Never saw an episode.
Do you find it frustrating
how little pop culture,
mainstream pop culture knowledge Cam has?
He's got a great...
Do you know this song?
Yes. Cam, are you in your 40s?
I'm 43.
Okay. How does a 43-year-old...
Contrary to his IMDB.
But you're from Thornhill and you're 43.
I don't know how you'd miss
Knight Rider as a cultural
touchstone.
Cam's bedtime was 7 o'clock.
Like, here's the deal.
Like, we really only watched sitcoms growing up.
Like, the stuff I know very well, I would say, includes,
but not limited to,
Breeze Company, different strokes.
Great show, great show, great show.
Family ties.
I have a Justine Bateman story of an encounter I had with her.
Wow.
A romantic encounter.
No, this was a trade show encounter.
Still.
Traffic, what else?
Full House, definitely.
What about the Cosby show?
Golden Girls, a little bit of Cosby show, yeah, to some degree.
All right, listen, we can talk offline about the shows
that Cam watched. Let's talk about the Knight Rider
theme here, okay?
The Knight Rider theme
of all the songs I could have picked
is the song that has been repurposed
the most times with the most success.
Three
charting singles
sampled the Knight Rider song. Three!
So let's see how many of them you remember.
Leave it, fam.
Can't and can't.
Mike, how about the first one?
Check it out.
Bit more.
98. Check it out. I'll be the street. Busta Rhymes
I know you're
Busta Rhymes
Ben
maybe not
but now that you're
hearing it you love it who doesn't love Busta Rhymes. I know you're a big Busta Rhymes fan. Maybe not, but now that you're hearing it, you love it.
Who doesn't love Busta Rhymes? Ever since Scenario dropped, right?
Anyway, this was a big hit song for Busta Rhymes in the summer of 1998, Fire It Up, which you'll recognize or maybe you won't but big hit song yeah what do you think of his uh
um mind blow here uh cam uh all right well that's just one yeah okay sorry
if you think that's just something i told you oh that we the world was introduced to an artist and producer by the name of Timbaland.
You heard of Timbaland?
Of course.
Timbaland was introduced to the world under similar circumstances using the Knight Rider theme.
Go ahead, Mike. I mean, okay, you get the point.
You should listen to it on your own free time.
And, of course, one last one.
This is really in your wheelhouse, Cam, and leave it, Famke,
and all the people listening.
A third hit song came from the Knight Rider theme,
and this one featured a young rapper by the name of Jay-Z.
Oh, shit.
It's the rock in the building.
Khali.
What's up, little guy?
Rhyme out.
What's up, boy?
Terrell in the house.
Meet me at the corner.
Yes.
Live from the United States.
Brooklyn, New York.
It's your boy.
Yo.
The nephews is in the house.
As soon as the beat drop, we got the streets locked overseas.
A Punjabi MC in the rock.
I came to see the mommies in a spot on the counter.
So, I mean, there you go.
You want to talk about a TV show that has transcended just being a TV show theme?
The Knight Rider theme has been used three different occasions and charted all three times.
So, that's my mind blow.
And for your submission, my five songs were fantastic.
Wait, let's ask the judge.
What does the judge, Levi Fumka, think of that?
Just kidding!
She's banned.
Two big thumbs up.
Lifetime.
An enthusiastic smile.
It's like Gene Siskel over here.
She has a Pete Rose lifetime ban.
That's what she's got going on there.
All right, my friends.
Final jam time.
Let's go in the Wayback Machine. Let's kick
out a CanCon classic.
Perfect!
Perfect! down the road that's where I'll always be hell yeah
every stop I make
I make a new friend
can't stay for long
just turn around
and I'm gone again
maybe tomorrow
I'll wanna settle down
until tomorrow
I'll just keep moving on
down this road
the burning question I have is,
has Stew Stone ever appeared in an episode of The Littlest Hobo?
No, I was not.
I definitely watched it.
I know that The Incredible Hulk, which is not a Canadian show,
often those two shows kind of reminded me of each other.
One of them had a monster that went town to town,
sort of solving people's problems.
Right.
This had a dog, The Littlest Hob hobo that just wandered around town to town doesn't speak english still manages a way to bark his way through life and solve people's problems everyday people's
problems right what a dog yeah i will say that i was on cats and dogs uh which is also known as
rington canine cop another show with a dog as the star.
But this particular show, The Little Soba, I was not on,
but I do know the song, and I'm happy that you played it
because I did reference it at the beginning.
I was worried it would get Hanson, and I'm glad it didn't.
That Cats and Dogs song, that was inspired by Turner and Hooch, right?
Speaking of Tom Hanks, who was in Family Ties,
what were you going to say, Cam? Tom Hanks was not in Turner Ties what were you going to say Cam?
Tom Hanks was not in Turner and Hooch
yes he was
yes he was
you better take that back
I can't believe you
this is such a benign question
it's like a spelling question
Cats and Dogs was like K-A-T-T
yes of course
well done Cam
see Cam watched that show like K-A-T-T. Yes, of course. Correct. Well done, Cam. Like Keith Katz. See, Cam
watched that show.
Like Cats and Dogs
was to Turner and Hooch's Doug and the Slugs
were to Huey Lewis.
Sammy Cohen would agree 100% here.
Now, The Littlest Hobo, we all know that Canadian
television series.
Did you know, though, that it was based
upon a 1958
American film that was also called The Littlest Hobo? So, though, that it was based upon a 1958 American film
that was also called The Littlest Hobo?
So basically it's an American movie,
and then the Canadian show kind of spun off it.
But here's what's interesting.
The series in Canada, it aired from 63 to 65.
But it was popular in syndication
that CTV decided they would bring it back.
And we remember, at least I remember, the resurgence, the new version of The Littlest Hobo, which ran from 1979, shout out to the Smashing Pumpkins, to 1985.
The concept, of course, as you mentioned there, Stu, was that of an ownerless dog.
A dog without an owner.
A hobo, if you will.
Now, that song, whose voice are we hearing on that song?
That is Terry Bush.
Earlier in this episode, go ahead.
It better be fucking Terry Bush.
We referenced earlier that the great retro Ontario.
We've got Bush.
Did you guys ever see the show That's My Bush
about W? That's My Bush?
Yes, of course.
Well, not of course. I think we might be the only two guys
you remember of That's My Bush.
I remember it. It was like South Park.
Yeah, it was Trey Parker and Stone.
Stone? Any relation?
Okay, so...
So, when Ed Conroy
came over to kick out TV themes,
he brought in this gem. He said, you're not gonna
believe this. So let me kick out the song
he brought to me.
That's right, bass for your face! Yeah, yo!
That's right, rock that!
I'm stopping it to say, I think,
because he knows I love Public Enemy,
he added this part, okay?
I didn't know. Okay, so I'll play it again,
but obviously if you hear any Flavor Flav,
that's not part of this one.
That would be a mind blow.
Yeah, I had no idea that was there.
I just pulled it up and said,
I got to play this again.
Here we go.
I'll play it again.
That's right, bass for your face.
Yeah, yo, that's right.
Rock that shit, homie.
Ed did that.
Whoa.
I'm dedicating this to Juan, so this is for Juan.
Juan knows what he's saying.
Right.
If Juan could translate,
that would be very helpful.
Hasta mañana.
I know what that word means.
Hasta mañana is maybe tomorrow, right?
Absolutely.
So yeah, this is the littlest hobo theme in Spanish. Hasta mañana is maybe tomorrow, right? Absolutely. So yeah, this is the littlest hobo theme in Spanish.
Hasta mañana.
You know how last week I played a little spooky Ruben off the top?
Like just the very first intro part there was spooky Ruben because we did spooky songs. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Okay.
Hasta mañana.
Que llevo ceba.
Wait for the drop
oh crap
that is it
I do want to hear it Mike
I really want to hear it
more than the spooky Rubin story
I want to hear
so hold on
so I played just like 10 seconds of spooky Rubin
to see if anyone would be clever enough
to know why
so today's intro which I'll play again I'm trying to hang on long enough for them to call this seconds of Spooky Rubin to see if anyone would be clever enough to know why.
So today's intro,
which I'll play again. What the heck?
I'm trying to hang on long enough for them to call this election for Joe Biden. But this is the intro
I played today.
Make them clap to this. To show our
appreciation for your support.
Make them clap to this.
Thank you, DJs.
I don't mean to put you on the spot,
but do any of you know the significance?
Why that? Every week,
I'm going to play something off the top
that's a little... That's Eric B.
for President. Eric B. is President.
Yes.
Come on. I know
hip-hop the way that Cam knows songs
you've never heard. I knew that. I have that.
I have that album. Thank God.
Thank God. Paid in full. Yeah, that's i have that album thank god thank god paid in full god
i know yeah that's paid in full is a is a fine album you know without without eric being rakim
you don't have any maestro fresh west right so it's like outrak him there's no modern hip-hop
he is the guy that would bridge the gap between and good rap he's the bridge
mic drop i'm calling it.
Okay, we're going to be the first.
