Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to episode 450 of Toronto Mic'd, a weekly podcast about anything and everything. Proudly brought to you by Great Lakes Brewery, Propertyinthe6.com, Palma Pasta, Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repair, Camp Turnasol, and Sticker U. I'm Mike from torontomike.com and joining me is Mike from torontomike.com and he, who is me, which means I am going to kick out the woman who rock jams.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Let me explain here. Episode 450 was going to be Ben Rayner from the Toronto Star. He writes about music. All set, he got sick and he had to postpone. So he'll be on soon, but then episode 450 fell to doug smith of the
Starting point is 00:01:29 toronto star doug smith writes about uh basketball and he was gung-ho he did like reference checks like he he talked to uh steve buffery of the sun he talked to laura of the Star he talked to Michael Grange of Sportsnet and Stephen Brunt of Sportsnet that's four different guests he talked to and all four wisely told him to do Toronto Mike and he was gung-ho but again he's got a family and some stuff came up beyond his control
Starting point is 00:02:04 that he had to tend to. And I fully get that. I get that better than anybody. So Doug won't be able to make it here today because I told him I had to record by right now due to the fact my teenage daughter has a dance competition in Markham and I'm supposed to be there all afternoon. It's awful. I don't say that for any other reason other than you got to get them there early. It's the other
Starting point is 00:02:34 side of the world. Then they dance a couple hours later. Then they wait for a long time. They might dance again, but then they do this award ceremony. And if you add it up, you're basically in Markham for like seven hours on a Friday afternoon and evening. So that's where I'll be if you're looking for me. So I thought, okay, fine. I can give episode 450 to Damien Cox. Coincidentally, also of the Toronto Star. And Damien, because he's coming on on Monday,
Starting point is 00:03:10 but I'm kind of itching to record because I'm used to doing two or three a week. And there were three scheduled this week and only one happened. So I'm recording a non-canon jam kicking. So this is not my 10 favorite songs of all time. These are 10 songs I love with like a woman at the helm, a female lead singer,
Starting point is 00:03:34 and not just great, you know, female-led songs. There are so many I could do. I could do Sarah McLachlan or Joni Mitchell. I mean, there's so many, so many wonderful female singers. But these are like kick-ass rock songs I still love. And I'm going to kick them out in a moment. First, I want to say on a happy note, I want to wish my boy a happy fifth birthday.
Starting point is 00:04:02 So since I last recorded, my son Jarvis turned five. Happy birthday, Jar Jar. And on a more solemn, sad note, every time I have a birthday for my boy Jarvis, I know three days later there will be a death anniversary, if you will. days later, there will be a death anniversary, if you will. So Mike Kick, my dear friend, who less than six years ago was, you know, kicking ass at my wedding, healthy as a, seemed as healthy as a horse and coolest guy I ever met. Biggest Raptor fan I knew too. He used to cover Raptor stuff for TorontoMike.com
Starting point is 00:04:47 back when the Raptors weren't particularly good. And he died on this day five years ago. Esophageal cancer. Took him from us way too young. I can't believe he's been gone five years. But thinking of you, Kickster. I want to just thank the, before I start kicking out these expression. And I just read that like off the StickerU fact sheet. sticker you fact sheet.
Starting point is 00:05:44 So in my own words, because I've been there, I've talked to several of the people working there. It's in Liberty Village. If you can stick it, you know, you can customize it and get it from sticker you.com. And they're really cool people.
Starting point is 00:05:59 I'm thinking, you know, stickers for the podcast, Toronto Mic'd. If I had a band, if I had any kind of brand uh or just just cool like I always think of those Andre the Giant stickers that uh and now I'm gonna forget his name uh the guy who did the hope the Obama hope I actually have one of his prints upstairs he did a print of Neil Young Sh Shepard Fairley. That's the guy's name. Anyway, cool
Starting point is 00:06:27 stickers or decals or magnets, anything you can stick up, temporary tattoos, go to stickeryou.com, stickeryou.com. They're, like I said, good people, good product. And thank you, Sticker You. Like I said, good people, good product. And thank you, StickerU. Also, and this is not a song that made my list of 10 songs. Female, how do I word this? Female lead vocal songs that rock. I have to work on the wording here. But I want to play a little bit of Nana Muscuri.
Starting point is 00:07:04 but I want to play a little bit of Nana Muscuri because this is the season for, you know, putting your kids in camp. Everything's about like, what are you going to do with the kids this summer? Unless you're a teacher, then you just stay home with them, I guess. But for everybody else, it's where do we put our kids this summer?
Starting point is 00:07:21 And I recommend Camp Tournesol French Camp, campt.ca. Go there. They have a day camp or an overnight experience for your child. They've got 15 campuses across the GTA. They are, of course, the biggest French camp in the province. And it doesn't matter if your child is francophone or French immersion or has no French experience.
Starting point is 00:07:48 They have an experience for them. So go to camptea.ca, and when you book your kid for a camp, use the promo code Mike2019. Mike2019. That'll save you $20 off your first order, and it lets them know that you learned about Camp Ternasol
Starting point is 00:08:09 by listening to Toronto Mike. So I'd appreciate that. They'd appreciate that. Everybody wins. Campt.ca Goodbye, Nana Muscuri. You didn't make my top 10, goodbye Nana you didn't make my top 10 but that's because you don't quite rock
Starting point is 00:08:29 hard enough again this is an impromptu episode so I have no notes at all it's all kind of I'm going to make it up as I go along but of course I do need to thank Palma Pasta for not only sponsoring the show, but for catering my hockey pool draft on Monday night.
Starting point is 00:08:49 It was amazing. Like all these hungry people over and we had chicken parmesan and meat lasagna. That lasagna is incredible. Like unbelievable. Who was it? Ted Wallachian who said they got the sauce right at Palma Pasta. And if you get the sauce right, then they know you got everything right because that's the hardest thing to get right. This is the real deal if you like or love Italian food.
Starting point is 00:09:17 So go to palmapasta.com for a location. They have locations in Mississauga and Oakville. Or cater your event with Palma Pasta, go to palmapasta.com. And I won't play the game of myself about on this date back, you know, 10 years ago, 20 years ago. I'll save that for Damien on Monday. But I want to thank Fast Time Watch and Jewelry Repairs. They've been doing quality watch and jewelry repairs
Starting point is 00:09:43 for almost 40 years. Go to fasttimewatchrepair.com for location you. Milan was on the last episode, which was our sports media roundtable, which had some good response. Joining Milan from Fast Time on that episode was Brian Gerstein from propertyinthesix.com. So if you're looking to buy and or sell in the next six months, Brian is your man. How do you contact Brian?
Starting point is 00:10:12 Well, obviously he's at Raptors Devotee on Twitter and he's propertyinthesix.com, but you can call him or text him. 416-873-0292. Brian's a real estate sales representative with PSR Brokerage. And finally, last but not least, Great Lakes Brewery. They've been with Toronto Mic'd here for years now. And the TMLX3 is scheduled for June 27th at Great Lakes Brewery. So
Starting point is 00:10:48 if you want some tasty, fresh, local craft beer, you've got to buy Great Lakes. You can go to their retail store, which is not too far from Royal York and Queensway, down the street from the Costco, or you can find them in LCBO, but make sure you get yourself some Great Lakes and be at TMLX3 on June 27th. All right, let's see, where do I begin? Let's kick out my first jam. Jam. Breathe it in and breathe it out And pass it on, it's almost out We're so creative So much more
Starting point is 00:12:08 We're high above But on the floor It's not a habit It's cool I feel alive If you don't have it You're on the other side. The deeper you stick it in your vein, the deeper the thoughts.
Starting point is 00:12:37 There's no more pain. I'm in heaven. I'm a god. I'm in heaven I'm a god I'm everywhere I feel so hot It's not a habit It's cool I feel alive
Starting point is 00:12:56 If you don't have it You're on the other side I'm not an addict Maybe that's a lie. Kay's Choice. Not an addict. And as I've said a hundred times, I was listening to a lot of
Starting point is 00:13:22 102.1 in the 90s. And this song came out like in the middle of the 90s. And I loved it the first time I heard it. And every time afterwards, including right now, just kick-ass jam. K's Choice is actually from Belgium. They're Belgian. They're from Belgium. And this voice you're hearing is Sarah Bedden's. That ends. So to me, this is a one-hit wonder
Starting point is 00:14:31 because I only ever heard the one song on the radio. So fucking cool, by the way. Still holds up. 97 it came out. But I went to the Wikipedia page and I'm like, okay, are they a one-hit wonder? Because sometimes I just miss something because I have a blind spot or whatever. And apparently on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, in 1998, they had a song hit number 28 called Everything for Free.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I still consider them a one-hit wonder. And Sarah, who's singing, is actually the sister of Gert Beddins, who's a guitarist and keyboardist with Kay's Choice. Also, this song is similar to another song I'm going to play by a previous guest of Toronto Mike's. When I get there, I'll let you know. And there's a few songs that sound like this, and I guess I'm a on shady faith
Starting point is 00:16:14 Kind of likes to restrict your breath Never been a better time than this Suffocate, I want to go to bliss in the city It's worth it so much, yeah, you see me rise above And take its place The heart pumps until it dies Train to blood, the heart is wise All my friends are murder
Starting point is 00:16:36 Hey, all my bones are mirrors And all these things want an edge, man All my friends are murder It's our way All these things want an edge, mate All my friends are murderers I'll wait The Distillers I never met a poor quiet like you Could shimmer and rot at the same time through Brody Brody
Starting point is 00:17:10 founded this punk rock band and this song is called Drain the Blood and again, first time I heard it, I loved it. And I still love it. Like, the whole thing appeals to me. now she was uh she was with tim armstrong a brass rancid and uh that didn't work out and then she ended up with josh homie of uh queens of the stone age and i don't think that worked out either ended up with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.
Starting point is 00:18:08 And I don't think that worked out either. This song came out in 2003. It was on the album Choral Fame. And it kicks ass. And the sky was made of amethyst And all the stars were just like little fish You should learn when to go You should learn when to go You should learn how to say no My last day Mine is forever My last day
Starting point is 00:19:45 Mine is forever They get what they want They never want it again They get what they want They never want it again Come on, take everything Take everything I want you to Go on, take everything
Starting point is 00:20:12 Take everything I want you to Amazing, Violet Hole. And the sky was all about it Which Courtney says is about her relationship with Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins. It kicks ass. It was on the Live Through This album,
Starting point is 00:20:39 which by far my favorite whole album. And really is amazing I know a lot of people like to claim that live through this Kurt Cobain that's his album but I don't buy it
Starting point is 00:21:03 I think Courtney Love is extremely talented. Multi-talented woman. And this whole album kicks ass. Go on, take everything. Take everything I want you to. Go on, take everything. Take everything I dare you to. I told you from the start just how this mood ends
Starting point is 00:21:29 When I get what I want, when I never want it again Go on, take everything, take everything I want you to Go on, take everything, take everything I want you to This was, take everything Take everything you want me to This was, of course, the third third single from the album because Miss World and Doll Parts preceded it.
Starting point is 00:21:57 But this might be my favorite cut on Live Through This. Tough to say. Take everything I want you to Go on, take everything I'll live through this. Tough to say. Take everything! Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:22:59 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:03 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:03 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:03 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:03 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:04 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Starting point is 00:23:04 Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh My mama followed her lover to India The mongoose and the road to Walla on your front porch Tear me from a growling tiger's mouth From then on I'm in love Don't ask me how I am today. Don't want to talk about it. Don't ask me what the matter is today.
Starting point is 00:23:34 It's the big day. Daddy's getting married. All the white good tears are wet. My daddy's getting married. I don't know what to say. My daddy's getting married I don't know what to say My dad's getting married Till the day is the big day My dad's getting married
Starting point is 00:23:54 From a wife who tears away So this is the song that I'm Not an Addict reminds me of. Not An Addict. They both came around the same time. But I couldn't decide which Biff Naked to go with, actually. Choti almost made the cut here. But Daddy's Getting Married is the first Biff Naked song I ever heard.
Starting point is 00:24:22 Again, on 102.1, and I loved it. Again, I loved it. Again, I loved it the first time I heard it and I love it today. And there's not a lot of songs that I can say that about. Or maybe there is. Oh, there she comes again. I don't know what to say My dad's getting married
Starting point is 00:24:46 Today is the big day My dad's getting married I'm gonna wipe your tears away It's also nice to kick out the jam for somebody who I've met, spent quality time with, who I now, can I consider her a pal, a friend?
Starting point is 00:25:07 She'd take my call. I think we're very friendly. I don't know, I'm not going to suggest we're BFFs or anything, but she's been over twice. And I bet you she comes over a third time. But Biff Naked is amazing. Just the coolest chick. Married to the day is love today My days get married, married, married Married, married, married
Starting point is 00:25:51 Married Oh, I good is life? What good is living? Oh, what good is life? Here we go. With another brand new flow. Measure up the equalizer like tic-tac-toe. Connect the dots, don't spot. As I blow off the blocks.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Beyond bionic. Like I was supposed to on chronic. Let's take it to another level. Are you a rebel? Thank you. Another artist who has been on the show, Mishy Mee. And this is Ragged Death. Ragged Death did a great job. And we talked about this with Garvia Bailey, I think. I chatted about this with her. They fused that heavy metal, that hard rock, if you will. Grunchy kind of, let's go with...
Starting point is 00:27:47 Well, she's doing like dancehall reggae or whatnot, but you could... It's a great blend. And their biggest hit, of course, was One Life, which I love. But this is the Ragged Death song, if you're going to pick one. Now, Mishimi is going to come back and kick out the jams. I didn't mention during the Biff Naked jam, but she kicked out the jams. Still amazing, you know, to me, that I think Biff Naked and Maestro Fresh West came by to kick out the jams within like a week or two of each other. Mishimi is going to do the same. She really does kick ass.
Starting point is 00:28:46 I saw she's in some Strombo series. There's some Strombo and former, well Strombo's been on the show, but also Mako Jr. They produced some television show where Mishimi is like in it.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Like what's this about? I saw the trailer. I'm like, what? This is cool. And of course it closes with just this it's done and then it's like bitch perfect. Bitch. If you can't feel this, you live your life on that level. Are you a rebel? Now you better dance with the devil. Bitch.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Mother, mother, how's the family? I'm just calling to say hello. How's the weather? How's my father? Am I lonely? Heavens no. Mother, mother, are you listening? Just a phone call to ease your mind. Life is perfect, never better Distance making the heart grow a bun When you send me off to see the world Were you scared that I might get hurt?
Starting point is 00:31:21 Would I try a little tobacco? Would I keep on hiking up my skirt? I'm hungry, I'm dirty, I'm losing my mind. Everything's fine! Amazing. So, this is Tracy Bonham. Mother Mother. Another mid-90s jam.
Starting point is 00:31:52 So like 96. And a female-led song that rocks hard. Loved it the first time I heard it, and I love it today as I listen to these headphones. It's like that post-grunge era. You're coming off grunge or whatever, and now you're just kind of filling the void with these types of jams. It works, man. with these these types of jams and it works man it's and I don't know if she had another hit.
Starting point is 00:32:46 Like, I never heard another hit from Tracy, but I could be wrong. Let me know. This album was called The Burdens of Being Upright. burdens of being upright. I miss you I love you See there is neither loose nor tight See there is neither black nor white I try to keep her on a short leash I try to keep her on a short leash I try to calm her down I try to ram her into the ground, yeah Can't fight this either
Starting point is 00:34:20 Can't fight this either Can't fight the fever Can't fight the fever I can't see her Till I'm folding at the mouth Baruch Assault. Of course, named after the character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But you already knew that.
Starting point is 00:34:42 Nina Gordon in Louise Post, but man. So this is Cedar, of course, 1994. From the album American Thighs. She's a girl to see the, see the She's got that grungy sound. There's a Can't fight the fever Some overlap with Hole. Can't fight the fever Can't fight the fever I can't see her of horror. I can't see her, I can't see her too I'm moving at the mouth Yeah Yeah. We'll see you next time. In every city and every town. Cramping styles is the plan.
Starting point is 00:37:28 They've got us in the palm of their reigning hand. When we pretend that we're dead. When we pretend that we're dead. They can't hear a word we say. When we pretend that we're dead. L7, Dinita Sparks. When did this come out? 92.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Produced by Butch Vig, by the way. Produced by Butch Vig, by the way. It'll appear on any list of best grunge songs. From Bricks or Heavy. By far their biggest hit and their biggest album by the way there's some great songs that I didn't put on the list that could have been on the list
Starting point is 00:38:43 Cannonball for example there's a lot of great Songs that I didn't put on the list that could have been on the list. Cannonball, for example. There's a lot of great rock jams with a female lead singer. Belly. There's lots. Joan Jett. In 92, the L7 was performing at the Reading Festival. Reading Festival. How did the Brits say that? Anyway, Danita Sparks removed her tampon and threw it into the crowd and yelled,
Starting point is 00:39:55 eat my used tampon, fuckers. We'll be right back. Come on. We'll be right back. guitar solo Another head hangs lowly Child will slowly take care And the violence Cause of silence Who are we mistaken? But you see, it's not me It's not my family In your head, in your head
Starting point is 00:41:54 They are fighting With their tanks and their bombs And their bombs and their guns In your head, in your head And I cry, yeah In your head, in your head Zombie, zombie, zombie What's in your head? In your head
Starting point is 00:42:25 Zombie, zombie, zombie Oh Okay, before I talk about Zombie, a kick-ass single from the Cranberries came out in 94. about Zombie. A kick-ass single from the Cranberries. Came out in 94. Lead single from that amazing No Need to Argue album. Dolores O'Riordan wrote this song.
Starting point is 00:42:54 She sings on it. She kicked ass. But I was thinking of protest music. This is a protest song. It's about the 93 IRA bombing in Warrington. And there's a weight to the song. Like, she's saying something. And we're living in 2019 here.
Starting point is 00:43:15 We're in an era, like, from where I sit, there's Donald Trump in the White House. There's Doug Ford at Queen's Park. There's Doug Ford at Queen's Park. The Fertilizer is there to grow protest songs, protest music. I was talking to Ron Hawkins last week. His new album is full of protest music. Agitpop.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Music to agitate by. It is protest music. We need more protest music. Anyway, this is a great song. Tommy, Tommy. Have I recommended the show Dairy Girls often enough? Anyway, that's same time period. In Northern Ireland. I thought about closing to this song my list, but... I want to close with a Canadian. But I'm a sucker for this aggressive, angry, kind of driving rock sound.
Starting point is 00:45:27 One more jam to go. Episode 450. Keep the round number for myself. guitar solo When I come up I want to see Out of my hips all inside me Should I hold on before it's almost over Give to me a famous cold shoulder. I'd jump for you, table for two. Do you get high from his eyes?
Starting point is 00:46:41 More than my boy in my arms. So I almost picked Numb, her biggest hit from 1997, and I decided, nope, we'll do 2002's Do You Get High. But a word about Holly McNarland. When I had Sammy Cohn from The Watchmen on a couple weeks ago, I told him straight out, I think The Watchmen are Canada's most underrated band. But Holly McNarland is our most underrated lead rock vocalist, solo artist. She's our Dolores O' in my heart. She's our
Starting point is 00:47:46 Dolores O'Riordan. She kicks ass. She's from Manitoba. Do you get it? And I'm embarrassed to say I don't even know what she's up to these days. But I would love her to come on Tronamite.
Starting point is 00:48:13 If I should be so lucky. Do you get half of his eyes? Morning, my boy, in my eyes I turn to him to see you Do you get half? Do you get half of his eyes? Morning, my boy, in my eyes Bye. I turn to him and say, do you get it? When I come up, I want to see. So there you go. Unscripted, unrehearsed.
Starting point is 00:49:44 I probably left a lot of great jams on the cutting room floor. Cause I, in two minutes, I just like thought of 10 songs and loaded them in the soundboard and did it. Uh, 10, my 10 favorite rockers with a female lead on vocals. I have to figure out how to word that, but I'll let my editors worry about that
