podcast at a coffee shop in studio city, California name of the joining is Marie
T. C. this used to be headquarters but now we switch they were down office with
big time for the summer no more writing jokes outside in the fucking 90 degree
you can't say I used to have to come here like at six in the morning to write
and leave at eight those days are gone between the podcast and the baby but the
church is in full motherfucking effect people what's going on Lisa yet tell me
something good nothing I love this new this new setup we got going on it's not
a new setup it's just for today until the office will be ready on Wednesday we'll
be back Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. we're dropping this one and you know
you stream no full effects no music no phone call it's just me Lee and a live
guess you should be here any minute but until that time what's happening baby
boy now I just got back from Boston it was a you told me something last time I
went home that every time I go home it's gonna be shorter and shorter and this
time I was there for like 48 hours and it was perfect I'm glad I did it it's just
the right amount of time it was awesome you happy to see your mom oh yeah it was
a ever I think everyone should do that I think it doesn't cost that much I know
plane tickets can get expensive but I booked mine four or five months ago and
I got my own trip to Boston for 275 that's not bad on virgin that's not bad at
all that's not bad I'm virgin and they wanted a lot more for the fucking
upgrade though later on yeah but don't bang any and you were fine you were
living like a doctor at the middle seat open both flights you're paid for your
food would you know the flight on the way there I got a snack like snack
things like chips all right and stuff and then cheese couple crackers some
raisins they're right out of the cheese you didn't get the fuck what type of
fucking organization is that but on the way back because virgin in Boston has
like nothing at the gate on the way back I got one of the put I got like a
protein box whatever came with like salami cheese and crackers it was good
there was a hummus one but I was like I can't do that with Joey no you can't eat
on the flight either in case you listen to the live podcast we went down the
foods you cannot not to eat no more as part of the church and the new one which
one soy no more soy milk no more blue cheese you got to give this up no more
ranch no more ranch no more nothing it's over we ain't fucking around if you
hear the broads laugh in the background they're two chicks I just saw a dick on
YouTube is only like giggling with my show my fucking Cuban rocket you weren't
sure what you could do just a little please I'm thinking about I'm going
fucking command or two that one with the blue jacket she's like 18 I show my
nose you said we're fucking nerd nerd the nerd deluxe unbelievable places of
beauty I love coffee shop this is the only place you want to get coffee they
play French music but the bathroom always tells my shit I've been talking
about this for years and it retakes the shit on me because I come here I drink
the green tea and I got a pee a fucking bunch and next thing you know I go in
the bathroom it smells like 10 dead fucking shit birds well you know what man
who takes a shit at the fucking coffee shop who the fuck comes here with
French music playing takes a tremendous dump in the coffee shop that's my point
we have that that's so you don't take a shit outside of your house no I don't
try to why would I do something that disgusting well sometimes you have to
listen I schedule my ass all close to the casa but it's funny even when I go
out of town I'll take little shit that I needed but that one big one I take as
soon as I get off the plane as soon as I get home as I'm unpacking I feel it
brewing and right before I take a shot with all comes out baboon it's like
black tar oh god after the week of like after the week of everything I'm not
relaxed till I get home it's really weird it's very weird you know who I felt
like you remind me of and I just figured it out who do you watch the big bang
theory I know you don't but Sheldon you're like you're like a tough version
of Sheldon then the super nerdy guy why is that he don't like nothing no he
doesn't like anything he has his meal scheduled to the day he had he schedules
his poops like in the morning 815 is like his time my time is like 10 to 9 by
10 to 9 I'm blowing a leg out you know I'm saying 10 to 9 it's amazing I have
like two cups of coffee I have like oatmeal or something and it'll take me a
while and then I love it a little music he's I'm saying one of fucking street
corner people we know what I've been well I hear it as imagination we got a good
equipment leaving over today lifted the rock thank God it's amazing how we talk
about it I think it's Seattle just raised the minimum wage to 15 an hour one
of those places and I think it's great not because it's great because people
are getting it paid more but I hope that they like places like like stores start
actually caring who they hire and and they start training them because I want
to get a guitar center in Sherman Oaks and I spent an hour there and the girl
didn't know anything at the register and I know people are new but I don't think
she was new and then I want people don't train people no more we've had this
discussion people don't train people you know years ago when you got hired
somewhere whether it's a coffee shop or there is a fucking hardware store they
took you aside for two weeks a training program or there was a fucking paint
customer service whatever you want to do when they talk to you about you know how
to treat people today man I walked into a GNC a week ago and nobody came up to
me for like eight minutes I really spent no time with me so my friend told me
this they have a pill that's like Advil only it's natural okay and I went over
to the GNC and it was amazing how I couldn't get help and it doesn't surprise
me no more nothing surprises me no more customers we've had this discussion
customer service in this country it's an all-time low and it's because of the
corporate structure I think in a lot of ways it removes it it removes it and it
kills me it fucking kills me at every level man something must happen to
all today the Agostino call me and he said there's a church that's having a
fair they got rides for kids and animals on more park yeah more park I go I go
do you know what time I say because it should start like 10 o'clock it started
10 o'clock today I went down there fucking ten 30 they were doing mass it's
100 degrees outside these fucking ballsy priests is one man they got 50
people in under attack is their VIPs they got the other 50 people a bunch of
Mexicans and Filipinos out there burning to death they ain't fucking brown
enough they're out there fucking burning to death right yeah I take a walk
finally because I'm not gonna sit there they wanted money in a basket they
wouldn't give a cookie I'm not in the mood I got the baby I'm just not in the
fucking mood for that nonsense so I took a walk with my wife we got caught we
came back the fucking fair didn't start till 12 o'clock so church ended at 11
so that people walking around till 12 that's how stupid these fucking Catholics
were mercy lost after that left 45 minutes she snapped like a fucking twig
as usual because there's no food there's no action so we had to leave she went
home she slept three hours and I went to jiu-jitsu that was my date I went to the
open mat today and leave my knee didn't bother me at all what's irritating my
knee is the fucking kettle bells oh that makes sense that's what's irritating
something that every time I do a kettle bell is doing something so I think the
next couple of weeks I'm just gonna try to mug it up at jiu-jitsu somewhere
every day I had a really good time today Lee you know Lee I'm scared to go and
every time I go fucking scared man I'm not good at it I can't breathe I'm out
of shape but every time I go I last one more minute than a week before you know
I could feel that I stopped smoking reefer mm-hmm I could really feel it in my
lungs so it feels good talking about something interesting how fucking good
was that live podcast how high were you well first of all I had one in them in
the morning so I was like I had just gotten over it by the time we got to the
live podcast and I know with you that you're always gonna give it to me always
as soon as we get there's good we're in the little green room give me half I was
like okay I'm feeling okay I ate before you're prepared would you eat before you
prepared your chicken I had chicken chicken nice something heavy so then we
get on stage and halfway through give me the other half and I'm fucking high she
came giggling on the podcast I listen to it today and then this fucking girl who
is very like her her boyfriend and I had like this little joke so the entire
podcast is we kept looking at each other she had another green hornet and you
brought her on stage and I had another half so I had one and a half so I had
about 400 what did you feel like when you got home you know what I think and
I it's interesting I want to ask you is there a certain point where you just
can't get any higher yeah absolutely pretty fucking hot but I didn't it
wasn't like it wasn't like a lot more than after a full look I've had a full
goomy and I've been fucked up and I had a one and a half and I was fucked up but
I didn't feel like I thought I was gonna be seeing things and I think I reached
my plateau I think what well here's the real scoop that the more you do it the
more you've now the goomies are the stronger for you so if you butt between
you and I honest to God honest to fucking God yeah the best trips I've had on
these things is right the least the least sometimes is more I swear to God
this time I'll eat a half a cookie and at lunchtime I'm like I'm fucking coming
yeah I'm fucking God how am I so God I'll eat that same whole cookie the next
day I won't be even a third is fucking hot maybe your body fights against your
body does something so it's just amazing I had a great weekend let me tell you
something I I've been working with Joe Rogan man seriously seriously since
1999 first time I worked on was 98 I started going out with him full time
probably 2000 one again I've done a lot of shows with that man but the last
three shows I've done with him have been the top of the food chain so you were in
Baltimore Baltimore Orlando and Santa Barbara the last three shows I did with
Joe Rogan were the top of the food chain in my life honest to God what made them
so great the continuity the fans the people that came to the show I shouldn't
call them fans the part of the network the people who paid for tickets that came
to the show the energy they had they they knew what they were gonna get and they
knew what they're gonna see and how they're gonna prepare for it I went
crazy up front you know I have a phobia against theaters I just from the back of
my mother and Lee in this life you'll decide on what you want to do and what
you don't want to do and we all do this we all decide on what we don't want to
do and we don't want to do and then after all the procrastinating and all the
bullshit one day we go you know what what the fuck is wrong with me I'm gonna
try it you know I still try out I still don't like Brussels sprouts I still don't
like ranch dressing I'll never fucking try it again and I'll never try fucking
hummus ever ever ever cocksuckers I had it today for lunch I know you did my
breath no I could just imagine when your ass smells like you filthy fuck if you
were a nasty bastard you could probably put your mouth in your ass and blow
together like a and blow a DUI of hummus up your muffler so so what was I
talking about and I hate these fucking theaters man I would go into them and
I would rant and I would purposely lose them and then I couldn't recover and then
I lose my head and because I've been going out so much and I've been working
on the material and I've been pounding it out that my confidence level so going
out there up front I've just been taking them for a ride and then Rogan pulls
him in the car and takes him to fucking Jupiter so when you're doing a 15 20
minutes set as opposed to an hour do you do small bits or do you like one big
bit like what do you do I do one big bit in the back and I go for local shit up
front okay and but for some reason I was going up front thinking like I've
really matured a lot as a comic the last year and a half because I had to
because of the people that are coming to the show the listeners of the church and
the Joe Rogan podcast they've made me better I know they make an effort to
come to the shows and if I show up to the shows listen man up to about three
years ago four years ago I did a show it was a 50 50 situation for me yeah I'm
not gonna lie to you and tell you because I never knew what I was gonna do but I
got sick of that I got sick of fucking people paying to see me and me going up
they're going let me flip a coin and see which joey's gonna show up tonight
there's always one Joey that has to show up and this is the same way in life you
always got to show up every day with both fucking guns out you don't ever want
to make you know if you're not gonna do it just calling sick just I don't feel
like fucking do it I didn't know this man and for years I wouldn't go to gigs
and it was the fear I would I would the reason why we cancel not show up was
because I'd say I got no material I'm not going tonight well those days are
done but now you have to prepare and that's why the shows the theaters are so
good I know I'm gonna call Joe in like three days and go I've been thinking
about him I looked at my notebook and I gotta tell you something man those shows
we did were off the fucking charts and I gotta thank you for giving me the
opportunity you know because every time I did three and oh I did really well so
I grew as a comic okay and sometimes you have to know this on your own thing you
have to make your you have to assess your own progress you can't wait for lead
to come say yeah watch your set you're doing a lot better no you have to say
wow I grew in a way today I was I went I went to jiu-jitsu I ran out of gas at
the end but I did four five I wrestled with four guys today I went out
sparred with four different guys one black belt for a long time because he was
teaching me stuff but one guy said to me now what are you right when you go home
today and I don't write nothing he goes get a thing and right today I kept the
pearl per belt in your guard you know he couldn't go nowhere because your
positioning was perfect okay and he was also say you pass my guard you know
write those things down because those are little accomplishments and these
little things that you don't see in your life that sometimes you don't tap your
own self in the back and I'm guilty of this man but I beat myself up so much
physically that we never see daylight I know all of us do that we all fucking do
that because we're all trying to get better at what we do so sometimes you
have to tap yourself on the shoulder you know what man so what I didn't do this
but this is what I did do and it's a count because I put the fucking work in
and I put the time and I believed in myself I'm gonna you know I'm gonna go
kill a hooker tonight I'm gonna go eat somebody's asshole you know I'm saying
look at you Lee you didn't even need to get I think it's time for a good way to
care because you're fucking confused to me tonight I think we talked about it on
the phone or I forget we're maybe there's a podcast I forget now but we talked
about how in this in this country now that there's always the everyone gets a
trophy I forget when we were talking about it so people nowadays are doing it
too much depending on themselves in the back too much but it is amazing like
we've been doing this podcast for almost two years somewhere around there were 175
or something and it's amazing like it's it'd be like it feels the same as at
the beginning but it's a lot different and we have more listeners now and
doing live podcast so it is good to do well we've grown we've grown and you
know listen it's like when we were moving offices we had doubts we're like
oh we're not gonna get I'm wanted I looked at you and said perfect let's
fucking experiment yeah let's fucking experiment let's take a chance and we'll
be talking about it and see and see and see what we're doing yeah this is and
we've been talking about this for a long time and look the opportunity presented
itself and we fucking jumped on it because that's what you need to do to
grow as a fucking human being or whatever the fuck you want my man thank
you very much for coming so to grow as a human being to grow it's not about
sometimes as much as preparing but sometimes when the opportunity presents
itself you gotta fucking jump on it absolutely and that's it and that's why
I wanted to take a chance and do this podcast outside we have no quality we
have dick today we just have us no music and I was lucky enough there's a as you
know I'm a friend daddy Brabo's and whatnot and he has 10 planet and I've
been very lucky that I've become friends with a lot of the owners of the
different 10 planet personal friends and but one place I've been going to his
van eyes you know I was telling them today I went to the open mat at my
school and I made little accomplishments today I held somebody in my
guard that's a purple bell for a little time to the bell went off you know I
mounted them you know I lost them out but I wrote them and until the bell came
out and in my world those are little accomplishments and sometimes even if he
said to me goes did you learn something today yeah I learned that sweep he was
not when you go home and do a positive affirmation say hell you worked on your
guard your side controls better he goes I used to you have a hundred pounds on me
and I used to fucking push your way he goes you're holding on to my pants you
got your fucking leave your leg is blocking so these are the little things
where you do this and one of the places I go and I love your school and that's
all the handful I call the old all the handful today I was looking for your name
on my phone all the handfuls here give him a round of applause Lee don't just
fucking sit there you know I'm sad thank you guys thank you so where you
coming from I was just actually at the champion blueprint it was a two-day
seminar put on by Jeff Spencer Dr. Jeff Spencer and it was a really interesting
way it's like a formula success formula so he's got these eight principles and
it starts with your legacy and it goes all the way through to you know the top
so reaching that pinnacle reaching that place where you have a true success and
you did this yesterday and today yesterday and today how many hours yesterday was
from 8 30 until about 5 30 and the afternoon or evening and then today
was 9 o'clock till about 4 30 and this another do it you just let's have to do
a personal growth on your own level yeah personal business growth type thing yeah
this is really interesting you know it's crazy I go to different
places with salami and I go to different schools and I watch you know not
the train I watch and I always feel real comfortable at your place and it's and
sometimes I sit there and watch what you're doing with your students and I
see how much you love your students and like I don't know if you know this I'm
a fat fuck but I'm an old-school martial artist right as a comedian it's
helped me I mean it's really helped me because I've taken where I learned the
martial arts and flipped it around you know and when I go up to your school I
like what you do I like how you treat your students I like how you break
everything down the commitment you have towards your students your fiance is
there she's away you know she's Filipino they take a start a fucking party by
themselves you know Filipinos are great with 12 or a crowd of 200 and they
could be all their cousins I mean it's fucking amazing my baby's godmother's
Filipino and I go to her house all the time for the parties it's always family
they hang with that fucking family and not just the three cousins but the
distant cousins and they drive from Riverside they come from all points
they get bumped off with helicopters and the jungles of Tarzana these Filipinos
don't fuck around Jack but it's amazing how warm it is up there and I go in
the back and I have fun and when I walk out I watch what you guys are doing and
I love it I'm a big fan of what you do and you know I wish I had the time to go up
every day and the energy I'm 51 but to be a young guy not to be going to your
school if you live in the area is a real shame I mean you have other 10 planet
affiliates or whatever but there's a lot of people up at the San Fernando Valley
and and and you know what is uh I asked you today you know you asked me what you
want to talk about and I wanted to ask you what was your mission with 10 planet
what was your mission you have kickboxing you have a geek class we have a
conditioning class you have a Muay Thai class this is 10 planet
you get to but you offer all these things so you obviously you have a mission
so my mission was basically to to create an environment in which we could uh not
just breathe success and champions and stuff like that but I wanted to breathe
I wanted to create a place that you wanted to go hang out at a place that you
could go have fun at um so I put a lot of time and effort into you know structuring
the class and also in that structure I make sure everybody's having fun uh I
make sure that everybody's talking to each other meeting each other we have
this little rule and I don't enforce it too hard but uh it's there where you
walk onto the mat and you require to shake hands with every individual on the
mat before you start the class so I just try to put everybody in together so to
put them on one same goal which is to learn jujitsu and then we kind of you
know find that mission our uh together as a team because I feel like we can do
so much more as a team than we ever could alone and you need that support system
not just for jujitsu but in your life you need people to be there for you and I
feel like martial arts especially jujitsu brings people together like nothing else
there's nothing like rolling around with another sweaty dude to create bonds you
know it's embarrassing when you are sweating on another man and today it
happened and I even said in the middle of everything I go John I'm really fucking
sorry I'm sweating on you and he goes Joey knock it off you know drop one in
his mouth or something oh it's horrible and it was two and it was one in the
afternoon it was hot in Burbank today you know but uh it's really weird how we
have jujitsu schools you have uh taekwondo schools you have karate schools
but then you have martial arts schools and that's a complete different genre when
I came from Cuba I went to go to karate Rashad's father who was a black belt
in New York City a real tough knuckle guy would take you running in the park barefoot
your your friends will be playing the playground you gotta run past them with a
karate gear on the next day you gotta answer questions you know what I'm saying
we didn't know you went to karate tough guy let's see show us what you got oh
fuck that was a style and then I went to
Jersey that learned gushinru karate and that was a style ishinru gushinru karate
then I went to Boulder Colorado and I hooked up with this guy
that was a hippie and his father only invented the fucking doorknob and gave
him a half million and told the kid what do you want to do because I want to
open up a taekwondo school I've been doing it for 30 years or 20 years why not do this
and he opened up a state of the art place and it was like family or when you
went in there was like and he would take it he would teach you takedowns but it
was tangsudo the thing that Chuck Norris evaded but it was I was starting
comedy at the time and it was weird because it was giving me the power and
the push I needed I was a pussy when I first started comedy I was like anybody
else it's like my jujitsu career you know I got up on stage nine times my
first year in comedy there's a lot of people don't know you know because you're
scared you're undecided you don't know sometimes you know I joined your school
and he guys in good shape whatever it takes him a year to really get going it
takes that first try him for the girl from the break up and all of a sudden
you got yourself a beast and when your people said you why why is he only a
blue belt he's been here for three years some guys take longer to develop than
others but the martial arts aspect of this tangsudo pushed me and it's amazing
when I stopped doing blow years ago I knew the only way I would stop is if I
got involved with martial arts because it was what I did before I got involved
with blow what I respected the people that I went to martial arts with and the
kids I did blow it were not the same people right so when I go to tournament
with them and they talk about how evil drugs were I know meanwhile you know I
couldn't wait to get out of there to smoke pot listen to that example and the
day I quit martial arts was nine months later my mother was dead and the
fucking horror began so when I got my bearings back and it's weird when I
went up to your school you had the same you have to bow you have to wipe your
feet you know you have to shake everybody's hand I saw like nobody was
trying to hurt anybody and that's something that you have that you you
have a smile on your face you know it's a with no lack of effort you got to you
got to keep talking about it and you got to keep telling guys to to go 50
percent not try to kill each other you know I got a thing where you know
before every every role we do a check see who's injured you know see who we got
to watch out for and the thing that they do that for is just to keep a keep an
eye for safety out there so you know I'm mentioning it I'm keeping it in the
mix and then guys tell you their injuries and say okay watch out for his
right shoulder okay my left knee all right his left toe and then once we get
done with that I'll go through my speech which is basically like if you're going
a hundred percent you're fighting Cambodian terrorists okay and you're
scratching and clawing for your life that's a hundred percent right you're
using anything you can to kill somebody right so I don't recommend anybody go a
hundred percent in my gym ever if you have please sign the waiver after that I
would say like 80 percent would be a sport martial arts fight like a MMA
fight something like that right you're going 80 percent but you're not trying
to actually kill anybody you know you're going pretty hard but you're not going
that hard so I would say that's I don't know 80 percent or something I just made
this up and then 70 percent maybe a jujitsu tournament you took it down a
you're competing you're going crazy but you're still in control your body you're
not you know completely going nuts and then there's training for a competition
that would be like 60 percent and then training every day like on a regular
Tuesday night that would be 50 percent so if we're training 50 percent that's
just your regular every day thing you know you're you're in control yourself
you're not flinging your body all over the mat you're not getting in wild
uncontrolled scrambles and trampling people and stepping on anybody's necks
you're you know and and the number one rule before we say before we start the
role is what's the number one rule guys and they're all in unison take care of
your training partner so you know it's it's not for a lack of you know effort
we're definitely keeping that at the forefront of the mind and not only is
that healthy you're not getting hurt it's good for business it keeps my people
in there it keeps them there every month or every week or whatever it is and
the more you're there the better your team gets if you're not there you're
injured how can you be getting better right
so i try to keep it it's still competitive we're still trying to push
each other but in a smart way and and what's the word
accountable you're you know you have you have to answer to something you have to
start for you uh it was all a dream
i used to reword up magazine uh something pepper up on the limousine
it started in uh portland oregon at the time you're from original yeah from
portland oregon and i trained uh man what was the
style now was this it was a form of kung fu um and it was taught by all
lesbians and these were some tough girls man
it was just a whole gang of them and my parents signed me up there
and uh they had a great kids program and uh you know from then on it was you
know the hoist gracy story like everybody else and you know
brazilian jujitsu and took a lot of different martial arts because i couldn't
afford bjj because you know god knows how expensive that
was when it first started i was paying a hundred dollars a month in 1996
at jaunjox for one day a week so you know that's that was the climate back
then and it was either that or you went to
you know torrents which was just as expensive
or you found you know one of these crazy dudes who
had a cage in their basement and uh you know you paid them 25 dollars and they
would just kick your ass all over the place so yeah that was kind of where
it was but i actually have a traditional martial arts background so
um i was a terrible student back then i would just bounce around all over the
place but that's why you see the the sort of homage to kung fu and karate and
all that at my gym you would teach it you would take something from karate now
and slip into the technique or something just something you know actually
he taught us uh i taught a class in the morning
with all old karate techniques that i learned back when i was a kid
so you know wrist grabs and uh what's the two-handed choking uh bear hug from
the back so it was kind of fun the guys were appreciative
you can't do it every day but it was kind of funny you know the techniques
aren't that ridiculous they're all right but you know
i wouldn't try them in the streets so you get home you you go
you know you go to one of your uncles get me in the head yeah yeah watch watch
this watch this fucking that grab my wrist know the other wrist you know the
other wrist not like that like under under it's so funny how uh
it's even Lee has a taekwondo background i did taekwondo
for like i got up all the way up until red belt i wish i went for black belt
and i remember like it was yesterday practicing the forms for the belt test
and my my like highlight of my sports career was in like first grade i got
the first place trophy for it was probably forms i had to get a big
tournament like the trophy was as big as i was and i kept it until i graduated
high school it was awesome but uh it was kind of interesting and
granted i know that nfl players are way different from people just going to
jiu-jitsu on a daily basis but i think it was like last year i forget
why they were bringing it up but they were saying that if you in practice if
you don't practice hard it leads to injuries
during the game if you don't practice hard right if you don't if you're going
like it like during the game if you only play 80 percent or whatever
you're it's gonna lead to injuries because you're being a sloppy
so not let's say for joey but let's say a ufc fighter
are they not going a hundred percent in the in the ufc or like how to
because obviously if you go a hundred percent every day you're gonna get an
injury you would think but like what level are they going in like in a
professional fight yeah uh i guess it just depends i heard a
i heard a quote the other day from the last hendrix gsp fight
that hendrix was throwing his fist at about 70 percent
now why wouldn't you in like a title fight why wouldn't you just be like
i'm going a hundred percent i think he didn't want to commit
to get taken down or to get countered or something like that i think he was
kind of afraid that if he threw something a little bit too hard that he
would be out of control oh and so you know
it's not the way to go out and beat the champ which he actually
if he paid for it because he didn't win that fight right so
you know i mean they got what like the jeremy stevens types
who just throw caution to the wind and just start swinging
uh you know and then you got here like dwayne bang Ludwig's who were throwing
hard but with control and very precise you know not to say jeremy
stevens doesn't have good technique he does he just puts everything he's got
into it he's winding it up like a pitcher
okay that's interesting because i mean for someone who doesn't know anything
about it you always hear like that everything they said
when i was playing sports was give it a hundred percent do
like do your best so it's kind of anti like it's kind of
backwards thinking don't go a hundred percent because you might hurt yourself
right you want to train smart that's always what you want to do in effort
you know you don't have to be giving a hundred percent to be pushing yourself
hard you know okay and you do want to push the envelope that's
right but you don't want to you don't want to get injured i mean that's always
you gotta you gotta carefully walk that tight room
it's really funny when i was studying gush and ru karate i was living in
north bergen new jersey and i was a a young cuban kid you know nobody messed
with me you know i was a i didn't bother nobody i didn't talk too much and
but i went to karate you know bruce lee at the time i mean i'm that old that
he really inspired me to go and i had been in messes before
uh like in new york when i lived in new york but once i moved to jersey
i was scared of fighting for some reason and i joined this gush and ru school
and i'm my block in those days was uh you know i was in the sixth grade all
there and i'm my block i had mario d as a chinese cuban kid who was a wing chung
kung fu kid and then up the corner from him
we had a cuban kid that was a judo kid and two blocks from him was this kid
glenn cologne poor reagan kid that his house
was covered with those three foot trophies we were
eleven ten twelve he was fourteen he was a black belt at three different
fucking schools every night he just dropped into schools
like that's what glenn cologne did every teacher loved glenn
he had a purple belt in karate but he went to kung fu schools
judo schools but at the end of the night glenn would go to mario d s's house
and we would meet there at nine o'clock so you had to go home do your homework
go up to your mother and go mom this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
can i go to mario now when you walked into mario d s's basement
it was a basement everything had been removed and there was fucking holes
every three inches from punches the other thing that stood was a beam with a
maki roar i mean we would get down we'd do
is that the house by your old school you showed me no no no it was on that hill
i i don't think i showed it to you was on that hill and it went this way so when
you fought you fought on a slant okay which even you know what i'm saying
because you fought in the basement so you were fighting on a slant
we would beat each other up bloody noses that's the first place i got my nose
broke i fainted i got up they had to give me ice cubes to walk home i had a light
on my mother my lip got broken there but those things
toughened me up and got me ready for life i always think of those nights and
those fucking in the summer in jersey human
11 30 and i went and then after it was all we'd do the push-ups and the sit-ups
and the with the rope you guys were fucking fanatics
the iron palm technique with the bag with the fucking beams in it come on guys
what do you think you're fucking with some novice here at the iron palm
technique when did you hook up with eddie bravo and his
fucking and his uh what is he calling the jet clouds what is it what is it oh
the uh i know what you're talking about the
chem chair what did you think of my man bravo
i actually started working in uh west hollywood right across the street from
bomb squad and uh i knew who eddie was from back at
john jacks when i trained there for a short while and he had the long hair and
he would stuff it up into that uh into his
what it was it called is uh like we wear a shower cap or something like that
and then over the shower cap i think he had a um
what is it uh ear guards right so he wouldn't get the cauliflower
and uh but yeah he was rocking that long hair and he'd come into like whole
foods and i'd see him around and stuff like that so i know who he was you
didn't really know who i was at that point and so i'm i'm i just start
working again and uh i was a blue belt at this time at john john's
actually hanato magnos street sport where the salami goes now yeah uh
actually it's a funny story because john jack
and hanato they were together for a while and then hanato moved
out and it opened up his own academy out in san amonica
where i moved to so he was the one who taught john jack's classes most of time
when i was there so i had a you know i liked him so when he moved out to san
amonica and i'm living out there bam that's where it was so anyway
fast forward a few years went back to school didn't have a job
got a job working in west hollywood needed to find some bjj
now that i could afford it again walked over to the bomb squad to see what was
up and lo and behold there's eddie bravo
and uh i talked to chuck you remember chuck remember the name
what's his last name big chuck uh yeah he's still around you see i see him
like the university of mma and stuff but uh i talked to him and he had also been
over at uh hanato so we kind of bonded over that and
i watched the first class and uh i went up to eddie and eddie was like yeah you
know it's a really great way to stay in shape and i was like
i don't need to hear about any of that it's bjj how do i sign up let's go
let's do it and he's like oh okay and so yeah that was it ever since
it was 2005 so 2005 so that was uh nine years ago so yeah i've been
training under eddie for nine years wow and you're a certified brown belt
no games rubber god lockdown spider junkie zombo
fucking everything so joey talked about earlier how you have
looking multiple monster arts when you're like if i was thinking
about jiu jitsu how important is it that like you're uh
eddie bravo to that planet and then you've mentioned john jock and all
like how how much of a difference is there because when i was doing taekwondo
there was just taekwondo and i'm sure there's different versions of it but
i don't think most people know about it um well eddie has a very distinct style
that's onto his it's his own thing that you aren't going to learn at
many other schools if they haven't trained either directly under him or
have learned his styles and techniques from his books and dvds
hold on we got nine fucking 11 over here you know there's the chem trails
fucking plane right over here welcome to birdbank colorado whatever the
fuck we're at what the fuck the plane was gonna hit the
coffee shop somebody stole the hummus and went nuts and
that's how i'm sorry to interrupt you i just didn't want you to wait you
want to do something good we're talking about the differences the styles
yeah everybody every gym has its style right eddies is very uh
distinct it's uh you know no gi first of all so it doesn't do any gi classes
which most bjj schools do mostly only gi so some of them do a little bit of
splits but you know eddie's straight no gi which you don't
find too often and uh you know he's got his style which is you know
rubber guard lockdown spiderweb uh deep hook transitions and
all the all the stuff that goes along with that
and then anything else that works for no gi jiu jitsu
so he's uh been putting other stuff into the style and as long as it works
with our system then boom there it is so there's so is there a difference like
let's say they went to a school eddie was teaching and they went to 10th planet
vandys is it all the same or are you putting your own
spin on it well you know yeah yeah we all kind of have our
own thing that we do um you know i think that's what makes
martial arts so beautiful is everybody has their own interpretation of it
and you know he taught me his his style and uh and i learned it and i teach my
students his style and i uh i also teach them
stuff that i like okay so you know i think every every gym has its
has its spin on it you know depending on their their body type and their
philosophy and stuff um do you notice a joy because you go to
a different one i don't know the head got your place well here's what i did
this is my path and this is why i chose it i was in
memphis and i didn't know who the fuck i was sitting next to i was sitting
next to marsala garcÃa and then the kid from
long island was there the ufc fighter knocked out gsp
he was there and he was there and they were having a conversation
and i'm sitting there i'm 418 at the time i'm about 390 at the time
and they're talking about you just one and i asked sarah i go hey let me answer
something if a guy came in and and you know he said to me that
it was better for me if i learned the g for 90 to
180 days and then if you want to then go to no g
but at least get some of the basics with the g down and then move on to the g
so i thought about it and everybody and i asked around i went online and you
know i procrastinated i spoke to you you said i got a big guy for you to come
up here with and i thought about it and the school opened up on my house and i
would always drive by and i went in there one day and talked to the guy
and he was very nice and i wanted to go i knew how bad i was
i i knew how bad i was because i was going to kick boxing
and on tuesdays they offer a kickboxing jujitsu class
and i said let me go just see what this jujitsu shits about
i almost had a fucking heart attack i was on testosterone at the time
i almost had a fucking heart attack i had to i had to run outside because i was
hearing shit once you start hearing shit you got to run outside and get
out i was like i'm going home i went home popped the last one i ever told nobody
they go but me i don't like that i don't like that
it's like getting pushed around and thinking about it for three weeks now
i gotta go back with a fucking gun i didn't like that
so i saw it they were open one day and i walked over there and he was a
john joc black belt so i said so he's gonna teach me
the same shit and he's gonna teach me and john johnson will teach me
and when i get in better shape i can just go to heavy and learn that shit
that was my plan in my heart i just want to learn the basics with the g
i never fucking wrestled guys some people wrestled in high school
i knew nothing about that i hit you with a head and with a chair
oh i punched you and i ran i wasn't i didn't wrestle i didn't do none of that
shit oh yeah no but uh what what i was thinking
was you go there and then you also do privates with someone at a different
school with uh salami right do you notice
it's all due to but do you know it's different style absolutely okay
absolutely and there's a kid that is a co-bringer kid that drills
mike evans and there's um north hollywood parking by his house
basically at his house on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11
and it's an hour it's just drilling but he gives you a pass the drills
so you might do a a hip escape to a one leg
a single pop-up side control and a fucking baseball choke but you'll
break it into steps for the beginner something that you would do
you strongly believe that shit and i started going there and that made me
even better they weren't doing that over there
i when i go to salami i go to salami because i know salami will beat me up
and he'll watch me and watch my breathing my breathing was that bad
i was scared i had to fucking take two asses and hug the fucking cats
before i went to fucking wrestle that's how scared i was i was gonna have a
heart attack then they said i had too many red blood cells that's why i got off
at the stash now i'm going to a kettlebell class
now look at this shit check you out so what do you think
what is what's going on i don't know but it ain't fucking good
no i see i don't know and it's back here is it muscle
what is that i don't know and you know last week at the ufc
i felt it in my thigh so i'm like so i'm getting mri Tuesday
let's see but today i went to the open man i was like a doctor
i think i caught one fucking uh lockdown i don't even know how i
wiggle myself out of it
i love it all i'm 51 years old i wish i could go six times a week
but when you're 51 you're not doing tests and show like that
takes you three days to fucking recover uh something like that day i went to
drill class and i did fucking uh whatever kettlebells
but that night i had to take out of there my knee blew up like this
so but you know uh this generation people in the gym that's 70 i heard john
johnson a 72-year-old black belt oh yeah i saw that 72-year-old and a 62-year-old
and this is what keeps you alive guys this is what you have to do in today's
society the doors there for you you know in japan they
have a league of bodybuilders 75 to 85 wow a bodybuilding league 75 to 85
i ain't gonna tell you they look like on a Schwartz vega right they got little
titties and shit but just think about they got lots they got that big barrel
chest yeah trapezoids you know
now school is how long has your school been open uh we started uh august the end
of august in 2010 and then we opened our own school we were over at
saxons muay thai right um so we we rented
the space out of there for a while and then uh you know i just felt like it was
time to grow my own program and do my own thing
and uh i couldn't i couldn't be happier and there's nothing against them
they're good people and they treated me real well over there
but it's just something about you want to be free that's what it was your parents
house with me 35 yeah yeah it's like trying to sneak
girls in and it's just not you know it's not tight so
yeah we opened our own space uh with my fiancee gene who uh
we just announced our engagement i saw that congratulations so uh
she and i uh opened this one together and i had some built some systems to try to
kind of put the put the thing together and you know
yeah been an open 14 months now or something so
i uh talked to a lot of people and i drive a lot
and as lee knows i'm i'm fucking a criminal and stuff
but i would i'm an econ major guys so i've always been interested in business
and you know i drive to the kettlebell gym in 930 and i drive past a couple
jiu-jitsu schools i drive past a couple martial art
schools and you know what they're always fucking closed
and these are the same motherfuckers i see on group are pushing their system
giving their shit away because they're trying to get people in the door
but their school is closed at 11 o'clock and they're so fucking stupid that
they're probably somewhere doing something else trying to make a living
which if they focus on their martial arts it's there
when i go to your school order you're never crying and you're there and
that's why i give you the respect and the love i give you that's why you're
sitting there you've never cried and everybody's fighting for a diamond
this fucking jiu-jitsu game right now and the best jiu-jitsu game is the one
you teach it some people want to pay 300 some people can only pay 120 140
it's what they could get what they could learn every time i go to your fucking
place i look at that schedule it grows you have
a conditioning class you have a fucking team class
you have a Muay Thai class you have an advanced class
you have an open beginner class which you alternate
so you can't make Tuesday at 7 30 how about Monday at 8 30
that's beautiful i went there on Friday at 11 or Thursday and
the guy's stretching and doing fucking yoga that's how you run a martial arts
school you have to be there you have to have your
geek pants on you have to answer the phone a mother fucker comes in you have
to look at them and go are you busy right now
i wasn't gonna do dick i'm my life is the school
get on the floor right now give me beginner class right now people will
fucking look at you yeah people will look at you like this
motherfucker you're fucking around because most places they're gonna go and
they're gonna tell you to come back at 7 30 and then they
complete the same people that complain then they complain because
gay you know Gracie Barra's getting 180 a
geek and 180 a fucking uniform what are they doing
something right get to it bitch don't tell me how he's got 300 students
because he's charging one fucking eight you have to be there and that's
all i love you and respect you that's why if i'm gonna go anywhere when i
i love going up there try to get up there i get a coconut water i get a water
i go in the back i sweat i see the young fucking kids i see her son at
my place learning the ghee that's why you're here man so
you're a bad motherfucker why do you have muay thai there and all this
shit that's the question i'm stoned i'm sorry we don't have muay thai no we
never had muay thai oh i thought you had something
we have we have a mma though so we actually teach us we teach the system
of mma so not just we wanted to do something more
than just teach bjj wrestling and muay thai because and you have fucking
wrestling on sunday yeah and we have wrestling too who's better than this
fuck we didn't want to do uh what everybody
else is doing and it kind of it alienates the the parts of mma
that have uh the hybrids that have arisen since
you put all those things together so ground and pound was never
thought of it's not in kickboxing you don't do that it's not in wrestling you
don't do that right so you got to really focus on that
in the mma class and the transitions between setting up your strikes
with your takedowns your takedowns into your strikes your punches into your
kicks into your takedowns and and that's new stuff that we
have to acknowledge now because the guy the best guys in the game
are doing that they're not just coming out with a style anymore it's a it's a
hybrid style and you know fighting off the cage
using the cage as a weapon using it to cut off angles
you know smashing people up against it so that they can't use their jujitsu
you know putting somebody in the center of the ring so you can fight freely and
you know all these things that that aren't being addressed i think at a lot
of schools some of them are great but you know
the ones that are still doing it the traditional style where you do
bjj in the morning and you do muay thai at night
you're just you're you're missing out on all that other stuff and you can't
fight a traditional bjj style anymore i mean the hoist gracey days you know
love them to death or over you know and uh same thing with muay thai if you're
coming out there with that really stall i mean really tall technique
you know you're on the tippy toes you're getting taken down in two seconds you
know it's not going to happen so you really got to you got to practice
fighting like how you're going to do it in the cage
more in the ring whatever you fight how much this is evolved it's crazy right
you know how much this has evolved from 15
i'm being at the store doing blow and having rogan telling me about some
fucking savages that are going to beat each other up in the cage
i would look at him like are you fucking crazy he's ruining my eye
why are you telling me about this shit and chokes and he would wrestle with this
kid he bravo what the fuck are you talking about wrestling with men
what are you fucking nuts i didn't know what he was talking about i knew when i
was a kid there was jujitsu but like in brooklyn
brazilians were like fucking martians to me in 1970
i was worried about chinese people and russians i didn't know what a brazilian
was who knew what a brazilian was so it's amazing where this game it's amazing that
there's leagues and van eyes now i don't know what a fucking brazilian was in
nineteen seven everybody was focused on bruce league
a little fucking brazilian was brazilians were like fucking martians bro
like mexicans in 70th pre-wedding mexicans been here the whole time
they just popped up they just started popping up
there wasn't you couldn't get a burrito in boston till you still can in 97
you couldn't get a burrito in boston till 97 when i left new york city there was no
mexican fucking food we're talking about 10 playing jujitsu with all the
handful how the fuck are we getting on mexican food we got it together
it was interesting you had me over last week to watch the fights
and i it always seems like for most fights not every fight there's always one guy
walking forward and one guy walking back and it seems it's always the same for the fights
do some guys prefer when they're striking to like be the one going backward because it's not
the guy who wins isn't the one who's always like coming forward but it's crazy how that works out
it never seems to be very rarely is a two guys or both going forward yeah it's uh you know in the
judges eyes the guy coming forward is usually the one who's winning the fight if nothing else is
happening so you want to if you go out there you take the center of the ring and you start pushing
your opponent around forcing him to move towards the cage or move backwards uh then you're considered
winning at that point because the reason i'm like i said i don't like him as a person
but a couple years ago was the nick Diaz carlos condit fight and carlos condit just kept running
away just kept running away but he won the fight right so it's it's it's just like you i don't know
if people like he's like okay i'm not going to win at striking i'm going to run away not run away
but it just think of it like cards right like uh ring general ship which is controlling the octagon
okay that's like a six right and then you got uh strikes that are semi effective like carlos
condit was throwing that night that's a that's a nine right so the nine trumps the the six in that
instance even though he's running away he's still hitting him with the counter shots and then spinning
out and it was a you know it's a great technique i guess if that's what you want to you know the
goal is to win but the goal is also entertainment well here's what happened guys and all the agree
with me because all the knows i'm talking about traditional kickboxing that type boxing is very
interesting all the put some of that in here before i fucking start seeing mirages do you want to go
get you know no no bro you're my brother none of you know i take you know traditional uh
took muay thai is straight up angle it's not really even as money angles it's straight up on your
tippy toes once machita came in and added the kung fu points the karate type style it's evolving
now for two years when i started my weight loss uh when i lived in denver i had about these two black
guys and then now in vermont and they own ejo ajo school of martial arts big fucking deal
but if i if somebody came to me today and said i wanted to be a fighter i would send them there
because of his striking his striking style is kajikembo but he's a kung fu guy so he flipped it
it's all about being evasive in their style anderson silva has a thing that he leaves he
doesn't come home with marks on his face he works more on being evasive it's not it's 2014
we're not cavemen we're not going to both stand the ring and that's not what taking punches about
and carl's condo was brilliant in that fight because he stuck to his plan no matter what
deus was doing he frustrated him he ran away from him but when he did come in bam you follow
me here's deus going what are you going bam getting hit and he runs away again he was frustrated
it's a very smart style so that's the evolution of the martial arts in muay thai in that's why i
asked you and what you're teaching over there at times do you amen karate has a lot of fucked up
things but karate has a lot of good things to it too karate has a lot of great things that
you're not gonna you're not gonna uh whatever over but you can learn a few you know when i was a
kid i used to go to those tournaments when machita came and everybody thought it was just amazing
what machita was doing machita was doing point fighting he learned how to convert it this is
something that they've been doing for 30 years at aron banks every fucking saturday new york city
you go when you throw punch if it just won't you the guy raises his hand it's a point all you gotta
do is pop out again that's a style okay that's a style it's a very evasive type style so that's
where the flavor of the march and it's gonna keep evolving it's gonna keep evolving some brazilians
gonna really add capoeira yeah he's gonna do a somersault and fucking grab your leg and sweep
you it's gonna keep evolving that's the beauty of this i've seen the spinning kicks like not just
the ones to the guts but like the ones that have been going to the head lately i mean the last
what year those just popped out of nowhere vtor belfer hit one and then everybody hit one was it
him a hit one it was a yes he hit was he looked rock old oh wait wait terry edam he got one terry
edam got but that kid who just lost this last weekend who's the german kid the little guy that
went for seaver yes he's a good with that he's good with those two but it's just amazing how even
that kick that kick is not a movie time kid that's a tycoon doe could be a crookish in whatever
that's karate is i'm using it now because everybody's doing movie time so they're not seeing it from a
different angle if i attack you this way kick that lower leg three times but on the fourth time i step
you're gonna wait for the leg kick i'm gonna kick that leg and hit you with a side kick to the
fucking rib there and that's it's lights out for you if i get you with my heel that's with
ease your teacher's and whenever i talk to him he goes if anderson silver would stop over here for
three days he'd be a fucking killer because his brother does the swat stuff with the knives for
right i mean his brother's the real deal with knives he does training with swat every sunday
his brother one that was teaching the kajikembo that guy was a plain fighting guy but you're gonna
see this guy at 56 he's a purple bunch of jitsu somewhere you know because that's part of kajikembo
once they take it down they finish you off that's the one where they wear MMA gloves and a gi right
that's that's it right yeah it's real brutal they do like five on one and you know yeah it's
hawaiian it's hawaiian and then what happened was the hawaiians got sick and tied again their
ass kicked by the navy guys so they devised an art where the smaller guy could fucking prevail and
they took judo boxing karate and jujitsu kajikembo i don't fucking know the affiliations and shit
i'm just trying to help a mother fuck out you know what i'm saying but uh no all the men what you're
doing is great up there and if the school gets better and better it's fucking clean oh yeah it
smells good you're walking like you're just too slow you smell the ass and feet not at all this
it smells like fucking uh what's that shit from dollar shave club oh one wipe charlie no the other
one wipe charlie you try one wipe charlie i have not you wipe your asshole with that it's
peppermint tremendous a chick smells that she's like what the fuck dog all this show is some heat
the shit down there that's the other one man keeping these school clean is like you know that's
preventing injury in its own right we had you know we had some problems with staff and impotigo
and stuff like that back back in the day at other gyms and it just ruins the whole vibe it makes
everybody hate the instructor or the owner uh takes you off the mats for possibly a couple months
and uh you know if it's not that difficult you just got to keep a routine and we make it so that
the students uh make it a part of the culture to clean so they they're running over grabbing the mop
soon as class is over grabbing the vacuum you know grabbing the sprayer and making sure everything
is all cleaned up because they know if they put in their part that you know we we all as a team
can be successful and be on the mats and stay training and you know and it's got it's not that
kind of vibe like you know we pay you so you need to you need to clean up after us it's not like
that it's like we're all a part of this so this big family and we we all contribute it's not a
customer relationship it's uh you know it's a community almost that's nice it's just bringing
a different flavor into something that i remember when i went to mr orange you got to bring him your
report card going if you didn't pass you couldn't go to karate class i heard about that and he would
fuck you up i mean this is it's just to show you how much it's evolved and i think you have a kids
program yeah we just started the kids hold uh we have as young as four and up to ten um i think the
oldest one is ten what how many days a week two days a week and how many students do you have so far
we got about ten and what do you teach kids we're so young you just run around what do we do
oh man kids are kids it's uh you gotta keep them in order that's the main thing you spend most of
the time doing uh making sure that they're listening being respectful to each other uh
making them pay if they don't so you know if you're talking then your training partner has to do
push-ups and if that doesn't work then the whole team has to do push-ups and then if that didn't
work then everybody on the team except you have to do push-ups and they all push you around during
the warm-ups and stuff so but it puts it so that everybody's responsible for everybody and they
start to want to help each other out and that's what i'm trying to do here i'm trying to there's
two philosophies in my gym have everybody come together to work on a single goal together as a
team so that we can do bigger things and uh damn it was the other one
oh and teach and and and learn how to learn so i'm not spoon feeding you techniques i'm teaching
you how to learn so how to break things down and and how to come up with a style and how to game
plan and giving guys homework sometimes and you know i want guys to think for themselves and i
there are instructors out there that they want you to be under them and not so much in bjj is
as other styles but they would only teach you what you needed to know right then and there
so that they could keep you coming back for more and they wouldn't teach you anything else and they
wouldn't give you a big picture and uh i always felt like this weird control thing and you've been
around martial arts you know the cultish thing was going on you know everybody wants to keep the
the all these these instructors want to keep you under their thumb and it's just a weird bizarre
thing but i want to do the opposite of that i wanted to teach guys so that they could be creative
and they could come up with combinations that you've never seen before and you know put things
together from different styles so that they would have their own artistic expression it's how it's
funny you said the cultish thing when i went to that gush and rugh guy from the ages of like
11 to 15 that guy was an ex vietnam vet the real deal you know he told me at the years at home
you know he was fucking nuts but uh he had become like the guy in the karate kit the bad guy yeah
he was like that guy towards the end he would tell you you know fucking knock that guy's head off
it's like that you he wanted the first guy to fucking knock the guys head off to scare the rest
of the team right so he would get lee and go lee when you go up there slip the first time
who cares get this qualified suck it up it's for the team flaunt they kick him in the fucking
mouth as hard as you can jesus and knock him the fuck out early school those that what's coming
after you is fucking pure heat and you know one guys it worked it worked and then one time i got
disqualified for hitting above the neck and i didn't like how he treated me after that and i gave myself
a date i was like i'm out of there i'm gonna go to a different school i was just i quit just to do
drugs i didn't want to go to school but he had become you know they they start believing their own
shit man and uh it's sad it happens to a lot of them you know what happened to remember that school
on sunset it's still there it's a taekwondo school it's a tanks to do by law school el compadre uh
yeah yeah yeah my buddy's a black building under that place right across the street from uh guitar
center okay that's uh that's his name his name start the v or something the italian dude right
really good guy he owns the place now okay he's got the mustache he's 53 yeah i mean he's seen
business was dying for tanks judo and he went down to the brothers and torrents he took the jujitsu
class and he started teaching i mean he told the federation to go fuck themselves they wanted
2500 a month up off the top and he's like guys you know that shit's done yeah taekwondo is done
i got i've done it for 20 years i know what the teach it's over so but thank you his name is nijir
what is it his name is nijir n a gg i r okay and there was a guy there before him that's who i was
there from like the 70s or long after the Philadelphia this motherfucker went nuts he once gave me two
cds of his music no like uh you know training tapes and it was him on the sunset strip with a leather
jacket walking down the street and two guys were hey give me your money he would beat him up two guys
that look like motley crew and stuff and this guy was i wouldn't know when they were trained
and he was yelling at the black belt nijir told him you call these students right fucking down
you get my fucking 85 hours a month i mean it was embarrassing what's amazing it doesn't
happen more i mean it's kind of crazy like watching a UFC fight and they hug afterwards they're very
nice and polite you'd think people who are doing this would be like monsters and they wouldn't hug
be nice to anybody no but this guy became crazy he was just a karate teacher crazy this guy said
fuck i'm gonna move to Philly and open up the biggest martial arts academy in the east coast
too bad he didn't have to get to a muay thai there he had everything else taekwondo world
and it went under he lost his life he lost his wife the fucking money the bank that he was doing
fantastic because he had a couple movie stars always and they would come by the school and he
would fucking follow the grandson and baby's happy but uh all on all man there's a lot of
fucking shams out there and i again the reason why i had yon here tonight i was thinking about
here a while you don't like getting up early but tonight when we decided to do this i said let's
fucking call alter because i always like what you do and i know that uh you love your students and
that's a lot of people go to places and they just cash registers you know it's a shame with 24 hour
fitness what it does to people you're just a piece of meat they don't give a fuck you know i know if
if i signed up for all this and i didn't go for two weeks i get a call hey man everything all right
i insult you the place smell like ass and somebody butt rapier that somebody put their
dick in your mouth through an arm bar in there you know you need to follow up with people and uh
it's just i i know that you're that type you really care about you know you have fighters also
what's that you have every week you're always going to somebody to coach you have people competing
in yeah we have fighters we have a few guys right now uh we got georgey who just went pro georgey
garcia he'll be fighting uh june um his second pro fight uh and then lobes mike frosto you've
probably seen him around a few times in a while yeah he's uh this will be his sixth amateur fight
coming up so he's gonna he's probably gonna go pro after that as well then we just had two guys at
the u of mma fight um milton and arguello and um sven manseo manseo i always pronounce manso
sven manso that's what it is so yeah we got we got semi decent group of guys it's you know it's not
huge but we're building and uh gape calvento is my mma coach he's the guy putting it all together
making sure the fundamentals are tight man you gotta have fundamentals man let me tell you
that's so important and not just like fundamental moves you gotta know how fundamental movement
works you gotta break down a punch into what you know what is your body doing to get to
generate that power you know your your footwork setting it up getting in the right stance then
you know putting that hip in it and twisting the torso and all that stuff i'm not a striking guy
myself but you know when i'm doing jujitsu that's like that's how i break everything down it's just
by simple fundamental movement you know take it to the break it down to the smallest point
and then you kind of then you combine two movements together three movements and then you have a
technique you know then you have a like a bridge right a bridge is pushing up putting your feet
into your butt so that your balls of your feet are on the mat so you can get maximum extension
with your hips so when those hips come popping up you get a lot of energy on that right and then
when you get them up you need to curve that energy into your opponent so that you get up on your
side right so you gotta basically create a pathway on your body to allow you to to generate that power
and put it somewhere right so it's it's two movements but they have to convert as one right
so you get the most amount of power out of that thing and it's like all right well where's that
pathway you know how do you curve and turn your body to open that pathway up so that you're not
losing any energy and you can just come barreling into your opponent but with control at the same
time so yeah it's something like you know eddie eddie was had a very complex system and um you know
he he mapped everything out beautifully and from there i was able to to turn that around
invert it and kind of look inward at the movements so instead of you know instead of putting more
movements on it and making more avenues let me see how how far i can perfect these moves like at what
point is it you can't you just can't get any any deeper with these techniques you know you can't
get any more extension you can't get any more tighter you can't get any more squeeze you know
and it's not about strength or power it's about efficiency so that's what that's the
trip i've been on lately your beginner program is very detailed you know we've spoken about a
line that he sometimes in the classes does that work for them later on i believe it does i believe
the more time you spend with a guy up front once you get him involved like i didn't know what was
going on for six or seven months not because they didn't teach with me because i was just focused on
fucking breathing right i was just trying to breathe man i don't give a fuck about my arm all
right you want to take my arm take it you know i'm i got a hard time fucking breathing cocksucker
so but now i'm starting to see different paths and stuff and i'm interested you know your body
could just do so much that's a good thing about jiu-jitsu it's all body types so you could pick
the three moves and there you go two moves and you can work them all the fucking time you run the
rousies once how many fights on an arm bar you know the motherfucker's coming so i don't care what
all the things but uh why do you spend so much time with the beginners where a lot of people don't
they throw them out for the fucking lions you know that's the that's the foundation right there
you know those guys are the ones who are going to become your black belts in the future and you
know that's you gotta have you gotta have success at the early stages otherwise you're just gonna
quit you know and it's tough when you're you're the low man on the totem pole and you know all
you want to do is learn submissions and submissions won't work because who are you gonna submit
you're the worst person in the class so you gotta have small victories and i i just took out
straight rolling in my fundamentals class i think a lot of guys have started to do that
but you know there there's a thing like how are you gonna do jiu-jitsu when you don't even really
know the rules or don't even understand it you know i would rather you kind of focus on showing
me that you can learn some of the philosophy and show me that you understand the game and then we
can talk about rolling you know and i believe in control rolling like situationals like all right
you're inside control and you're gonna try and mount the guy all right cool it's very small so
there's not a lot of room for injuries to happen or for wild scrambles to happen because in boxing
it's the punch you don't see coming right in jiu-jitsu it's very similar it's a technique you
didn't you didn't know was there and before you can tap you've just got you know your arm
arm locked out or whatever it is and so you know i want my guys to have some awareness
and so you know you want to build those guys up and i want everybody to be able to do jiu-jitsu
so i feel like it's really important to put a lot of time into those beginner guys you know
all of them happy you came tonight man i always want to get you on the podcast
just as a pros this isn't a comedy fucking podcast tonight there's my main man all the
dropping some knowledge on you i love what you do in another life all the would you be a fighter
or what you know now you know what i probably would have tried it you know we never had a
fight team really you know we had some guys who fought you know einstein and connor and
jason chambers and stuff but you know it wasn't like a team and and if i was gonna fight i needed
somebody i needed a team to support me you know i needed some guys to help me out pick me up help
me along tell me what to do you know so i don't know you know i love fighting i love mma to death
and it's changed my life and i mean it's consumed my life but i don't know how much passion i have
for actually fighting myself you know and i get you get that like oh you should do it because
you know you know otherwise you're like a brain surgeon who's never who's never opened up a brain
in your life and i disagree i feel like everybody has their part to play in this game and some guys
are going to be the fighters and some guys are going to be the coaches and some guys are just
going to be the support team and there can't be everybody everybody can't be a warrior who's
going to pick the berries and you know sew the rugs and carpets or whatever you know somebody's
got to take care of the domestic shit or somebody's got to take care of the team take care of the
fighters right and if you spend your whole life fighting then you weren't spending your whole
life coaching so that's that was my thing and you just you know eddie made incredible instructors
and that's you know that's where i saw my calling you know i wanted i wanted something i wanted a
goal that was outside of myself uh because i you know i wasn't competing too much and you know
belts are cool but like you know a few years in between belts sometimes so you can't make that
a goal every time and so i wanted to start instructing because then i could help my technique out
at the same time be accountable to somebody else that's outside of myself so you know i can't fuck
up myself but i have somebody that i got to meet there and i won't then i won't flake on them you
know but i'll flake on myself sometimes so you know and that just kept going and i felt like i got
pretty good at it and people started following me around so i was like hmm maybe i could do this for
real and uh yeah just kind of went blew up after that i'm happy you got to do the podcast we're
getting thrown out of here we're getting thrown out yeah we got 15 minutes tremendous man but this
