Hi, and welcome to another episode of WhereWulf Ambulance.
I'm Katie and I'm here with my friend Alan.
How are you?
How are you?
I'm doing all right. How are you? Good. We say the same thing at the beginning of every single episode, I think.
I'm just starting dropping it in. Yeah. Why do we bother? Well this week we watched a movie that is
available on Netflix called Oculus from 2013. It's from the it's the first
non-wrestling film from W W W.W. Studios so I think it's actually
Oculus. You know I do think you're right that this is the first one that doesn't have a superstar in it and even though I knew that going that going that that that that that that that that that th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th tho tho th tho tho tho tho tho the tho tho the the the the tho tho the tho tho tho th tho tho tho th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the th the the the th. th. the th. th. the th. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the thi thi thi thi the the the to to to to the to theee to theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee tho tho tho tho tho tho you know, I do think you're right that this is the first one that doesn't have a
superstar in it.
And even though I knew that going into it, I still expected like John Sina to pop up in
the mirror and be like, you can't see me, my time is now.
Waving his hand in front of his face.
We're doing that with our hands. Isn't a visual medium? It's one of like the two things I know about wrestling. Yeah, you nailed it. Thanks.
People's eyebrow.
That's the other.
Can you do like a Hulk of Mania pose, which I'm doing right now?
You guys can't see it, but it looks awesome?
So that's where we are.
I actually really liked this movie. I was pleasantly surprised by a W. Wait, are we thi th. I th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th. I th th. I th. I th. I th. I th th. I th. I th. I th. I th. I thi thi, I thi thi thi. thi, I thi, I thi, thi, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thiiiiiiiiiiiiii. thiii. thi. Can th we jumping right into the ratings portion? Yes.
Seven.
No, I don't know.
I haven't thought it through yet.
No, that actually, I liked it as well.
For new listeners, we will be doing spoilers through this episode.
So if you want to watch the movie before you listen to us, prattle on about it,
please do.
You say prattle like it's a bad thing. So this is a movie about two siblings who look nothing alike,
except that they both have silly bangs.
Both very attractive people.
Although, I did think that the brother was, for just like one split second,
I thought it was Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
Then I realized he's like my age and also like five foot too. So not JTT. Maybe you should talk about the plot because I feel the feeling I'm just
going to do this.
This is a movie about a family that has purchased a cursed mirror that through the course
of the film we learn has a long history of murdering people.
There's not much more to than there.
You start up with a brother in the institution, right?
Yeah, he's like getting out. He's being released as not a danger to society anymore.
Yeah, it's like this movie doesn't reinvent the wheel at any level.
It gives you stuff that you've seen in other horror movies.
But it does it well.
It assembles all those pieces really well into a movie. Like, we start off with a young man who's getting out of an institution, who we find out is
the son in this family, and this nuclear family that's cursed by this mirror.
And after he gets out of prison, he gets out of an institution.
And he goes and meets with his sister for the first time in years, we learn.
And she's hellbent on destroying this mirror.
Yeah. That's her sole mission in life and she's tracked it down.
She's like an antique sealer or works for an auction house or something.
Seemingly just to find this mirror. She's taken on this job. Oh, you think so. Yeah, that's what it seemed like.
Do you think she got engaged to the owner of the auction house just to find the mirror? Because that's a weird, that is a level of depth that is weird.
I mean on some level it didn't seem like she had, well I mean she was, her,
she had a singular vision in this film just to destroy this mirror.
She could have probably used the psychiatric help that her brother had just been given.
A little bit.
We learned pretty early on that the brother killed the father in this family, killed his father.
The sister sort of connives the brother into going with her to destroy the mirror.
In the house where it had all happened that their family had lived 11 years prior, I think.
So she's gotten this job as an antiques dealer, she's tracked the mirror down and thrown, thrown to the mirror, theyruths, thi, thoed, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, and then, and then, their, their, sorowne, sorowne, sooomomomorrow, somea, somea, somea, somea, somea, somea, somea, somea, sooomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomomom...........eded, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiia, thrified, tomedea, tomedea, togea, together, together, t alone with the mirror and taken it back to her family home,
which she bought or inherited when her parents died.
No, she said she bought it.
Did she? I think so.
Okay.
Which is weird,
Okay.
Maybe not, I don't know.
the the tell.
to be the youngest homeownerthe weirdest. She is super weird. She is she has serious mental problems. Yeah.
Like this is even in the trailer but there's a scene where she like walks up to
the mirror. She's like alone with it for the first time and she like
lightly strokes the glass and she's like you must be hungry. Like no no no no no that that that that that th is th is thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. tho-I th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the. the. the. to to to to the. to to to to thee. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. thing has ruined you. Don't do that.
Well, the crack that's in it that she rubs and says, I hope it hurt.
I hope it hurts.
I hope it still hurts.
I loved her husky voice.
It's what I thought my voice sounded like until I heard this podcast for the first
time.
I'm a teenager. She's also, I think, I tha, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I think, I think, I think, I think, I think, I think, I thi, I think, I think, I th, I th, I th, I th, I th, I th, I th, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I, I, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I the, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, I thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, th were fantastic Americans. I thought she had the, the guy that's on, uh, Sons of Anarchy, his thing where
he, if he raises his voice above a whisper, he loses his American accent. I felt like she
was doing the same thing. That was the husky thing. It was like, even when she had to yell, she kind of like, she turned the macho man a little bit. Wow, this is absolutely our WWE episode.
Snap into it.
So they go to the house.
She has set up this, I don't know, $20,000 worth of recording equipment and IMAX
and all this stuff.
It looks like an Apple store in the room.
It's just, yeah, Stark white.
And she's set it up to record to record to record to record to record to record to record to record to record to record to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record up to record to record to record to record to she's she's set it up to record
this mirror doing its mirror business yeah and the whole thing is to document
what this mirror is and what it did to her family by showing that it is indeed
haunted to get whatever is inside of it to come out and then ultimately to
destroy it right because she's set up this anchor with like a hundred pounds
worth a weight on it hanging from the ceiling to smash into it check off the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. And their. And then. And then. And then. And then. And then. And then. And. I. I. their. I. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. I. the. I. I. And. And. And worth of weight on it hanging from the ceiling to smash into it. Checkoff's anchor. Because as we find out
later you can't just hit it with a stick because it will move. So the mirror has
all sorts of powers like it can make you do things that you don't know
you're doing. It can make you hallucinate,
like manipulate the time space continuum seemingly.
It can mimic a 911 operator, which I was really not that into.
But we're never really told why.
There's no back story to it.
Right, there's all the different kills that the mirror has that she recounts
through the years. Yeah, but there's no like Indian burial ground. There's no like long ago murder, like there's no cause,
which I feel is like really the gaming hole in this movie.
And sometimes the mirror's just evil, Katie.
Yeah, see, I don't like, I feel like that's what they're doing there
is setting it up for a franchise where like jumping out and ripping someone's throw it out.
A gully, a little toilet puppet?
What?
You've never seen coolies, have you?
No.
OK.
It's a little, it's a movie with little puppets that kill people.
It's great.
Cool. Isn't this, doesn't thisthe same time as the Conjuring.
Okay.
But I know, I think at the beginning it says it's from the producers of Insidious.
Okay.
I think we have mocked on this program.
Yeah, it's it's the paranormal activity production company and insidious and the purge. Yeah, so it's like it's related. It's the the the the the the the the the the the they. It's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. It's, th. th. th. thean. thean. thean. threat. thean. thean.ean. thean. thean. thean. thean. thean. thean. I. I. I. I. I. it is it's related to those movies well I production
so yeah they're definitely setting up for a franchise yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah there's like eight paranormal activities now right and there's I think
I think they're already doing a sequel to Annabel so it's just like what is
Annabelle is that the one of the doll oh the one that you hated yeah I've seen the first paranormal activity and I've seen the first the the first the first the first the the first the the the the the the the the the the the the the th is th is th is the the th is th is th is th is th is the th is th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. I'm the. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm th. I'm. I'm. I'm. I'm. I's th. I's th. I's th. I's th. I'm is th. th. th. I's th. th. th. I's th. I's th. I's the the the the the the first the first the first the first the first the first the first the first the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the the the. the the. the the the. the. the the. the. the th've seen the first insidious and I've seen Oculus and Oculus is by far the best of those movies I would say. Oh yeah for sure.
So they're in this room with this mirror and then for about an hour it's just
like... Well the whole movie is two timelines running simultaneously basically.
Yes. You've got the family when they first move into the house and then what happens to them after them afterward and then you're following the two two two two two two the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the their. their. their. their. their. their. their their their their their their their their their. their their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their mirror. their their their mire.m. their. their. their. their. their their their their m. their their mire. their you're following the two siblings as they're doing their paranormal research trying to get the mirror going. I really like the way
they were intertwined though that like the two older siblings would walk out of a
room into the hallway and then it would they would suddenly be the two
younger sitting in the hallway. I thought it was just a really
stylistically I thought it was really nicely done. Also their dad was Slater from Dazed and Confused. And every time I saw him, I was like,
check you later.
I couldn't stop, you cool, man.
Their mom was Starbuck from Battlestar Galact.
Yeah.
They were both excellent, though.
I thought they were both great.
Both great in the movie.
I thought, actually, I thought all the little girl. The little boy was kind of a... Especially this production company. The acting and insidious is a...bismal. Like in all those
like paranormal activity movies are so terrible. And they kind of play it off as
like, well this is like a documentary. It's supposed to be terrible.
But because real life is terrible? Like I don't know. So yeah, so for a while they're just in the house and you can see on the footage that the mirror is making them do things.
Like they at one point take both
of the large video cameras and turn them to face each other.
But they don't ever remember doing that.
Right, so we see them interacting
and they're having this conversation
and they actually walk out watch the footage of what just happened. And it shows them moving the two video cameras.
Yeah.
Because they walk back into the room and the two video cameras are in the middle of the room.
Now whereas they were facing the mirror previously.
So they watched the footage back and they're the one to move the cameras.
Yeah. And then it also causes them to hallucinate. Like, they's to. to. to be very. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. to. to. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. toe. toooooooooooooooooooe. toooooooe. their. their. their. their. their. the point, the woman bites into an apple,
or so she thinks it's an apple,
but it ends up being a light bulb.
And there's this really protracted, gross, great scene
where she's like pulling the piece of glass
out of her bloody mouth, but it ends up actually being the apple,
so the mirror can do that too.
They have the brother and sister timeline, let's call tha now, the now, the now, the now, the the they, they, they, they, they, they, tho, they, tho, tho, thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and then, and then, tho, and thi, and thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, the, the, the, thea, and thea, thea, thea, thia, thi, th now, let's call that the now. You're watching them
slowly degenerate as this is going on, as this evening is going on, and the sister is getting more and more
manic and the brother is getting more and more like he starts, I guess, to come over to her side a little
bit whereas he's very standoffish at first. Yeah, they did kind of the Mulder and Scully thing at first where she was like describing how it was you know a
supernatural item and he was talking about like basically psychology which right
because he had spent X number of years I think it was 10 years or something
being told that what he thought was true wasn't and if only he could have just
kept living his life like that like I don't know but the the other timeline
is also showing the degeneration of their family yeah as so as they're the their their their their their their ccking their c. their c. their c. their c. their c. their c. their c. their c. their c. their th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I. I th. I th. I was. I was. I was their te. te. te. te. te. their. te. te. their. their. te. their. their. their. their. their their th. te. But the other timeline is also showing the degeneration of their family.
As so as they're cracking in the now, their family is falling apart in the past at the same time.
Again, I think it was expertly done. Like the Now siblings run into a room and then the
camera will pan around and it's them as children being chased by their parents or something.
That kind of stuff was really cool. Yeah. The way that it was handled. And you see their family falling apart,
and it becomes like, it's very tense,
and it just gets more and more tense,
until it reaches like a fever pitch
where it stays for like a really long time,
which was another beef that I kind of had with this movie,
was that it just went on to do it. In the past, the father buys this mirror is like, it seems like he's gotten a new job and they've
bought a new home in the suburbs. It's definitely like a, it seems like a, the
mirror seems almost like a sign of upward mobility for them, where it's like we're not getting IKEA anymore. theate. Exactly. So he becomes, it's in his the the, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. to, it's, it's, it seems, it's, it's, it seems, it's, to, to. te. te. te. th the. the in there, and the kids eventually see him with another woman in the office.
Through the window.
Through the window. And I guess that sort of alludes that there's been infidelity in the
relationship previously. And then the mother becomes thiaughan.
And the mother becomes thiiaughed. The's perceived this thing that the kids that that thi's thininininin. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. The thi. thi. The thi. The thi. The thi. The thi. The thee. The thee. The the. The thi. The the. The the. Thea-s. The-s. the. the. the. the. the. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thr. thr-s sort sort sort sort sort throwne. throwne. throwne. the. theeeeee. theeeee. throwne. the. eventually not even feeding the children anymore. She's just become a total
loon. The father is getting, initially he's very concerned and then that starts to
wane and it almost felt like a movie we've watched on here before Juan.
It felt like we're sort of seeing the precursor to the father
murdering Toshio and his mother, you know, like he becomes just sort of cold and distant and angry all the time and he's also doing this weird thing with his fingers where
they're like bleeding all the time they're like. Oh yeah he's ripping his
fingernails off and stuff, which also reminded me of Juil when the dad's biting on his
fingernails. And it's also finger stuff to me. There's like a lot of a scene where he like pulls off the band-aid and takes his nail with it, which is fucking gross. He pulls off the band-aid and then looks down and the band-aids on his finger again,
so he's tends a really long time, like until he gets pliers to pry the band-aid off and
then realize this is ripped off his own fingernail.
Which is gross.
In case you guys haven't seen this movie, I will tell you, that's gross. This is sort of jumping ahead in the timeline of the film, but with just sticking with
the family, eventually the father chains the mother up in the bedroom because she's gotten
so sort of out of control and this fixation on him cheating on her.
It's really weird.
It's very weird.
They're like, he just tells the children that she's sick.
Like, don't worry, don't go in there. and it th. And it tho tho tho tho tho tho tho th. And it tho, th. tho, th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th. th. th. So, the the th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, th. So, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that's is just just just, that's that's that's, that's just just just just, theean, thean, thean, thiii. thi. thi. thi. thi. she's sick, like, don't worry, don't go in there. And it seems to go on for quite some time that she's in there.
It was like he read the yellow wallpaper and then took it to like that un-teen
degree.
Like, um.
This seems like it will end well.
It was fine in that book.
But at some point, the mother, the teeth. Yes, yes, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, and, th, and, and, and, and, th, th, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thee, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, th. And, to, to, the, te, te, te, te. And, te. And, te. And, te. And, together, together, thoooooooooo. It, thee, tho. It's, like, yeah, there's like a pile of her teeth in the room. And I'm guessing she pulled them out.
I guess.
Yeah.
At one point, she's also chewing on the pieces of a plate.
Right.
Which, oh.
Right, she's smashing the food that he brings to her and then chews on the plates.
Yep. Yep. Yep. This, nothing to see here move along. And at one point the kids try to bring a neighbor over to like tell them they're like shit's fucked in the house.
Yeah. And the dead like talks the neighbor down and talks about going to play
golf with him. The whole time he's got a bloody hand like up on the wall. I had
gotten upset to that point because I was like to an adult you trust. And then she does and it like just nothing happens.
And they try to call a doctor, but the doctor...
Is the mirror?
Is the, well I think at that point the doctor is still a doctor
who's just like quit fucking with me kids.
Or it's the mirror.
Yeah, the mirror can talk to me on the phone mirror. So eventually it gets to the point where, how does the mother and father end?
Does the father kill the mother?
She somehow gets out. She gets off the chain.
I don't remember how.
Right. She gets off the chain and then she tries to murder the daughter.
She's like choking the daughter. And she's like about to kill her when I the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th, how, how, how, how, how does, how does, how, how, how, how, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how does, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, how, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiii, thii, thi, thii, thi, how does does thi, how does thi, how does th daughter. She's like choking the daughter.
And she's like about to kill her when I think the father comes in.
And no, no, no, no, here's what happens.
She tries to kill the daughter.
She's choking the daughter.
And then she has like a moment of clarity
where she looks down and realizes it's like her little girl
that she's choking. And she stops and she says, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, the, the, she, the, the, the, she, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thi, thi, thi, thi, the the the the thi, the the the the the the the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, thooooooooooooooooooooooo, is, is, is Kaley, the daughter's name, and then she gets the
father comes in and shoots her. Right, he's been walking around with this handgun the whole
time. He's been playing with his gun for like three acts of this movie. Yeah. So the father
kills the mother and then starts hunting down the kids. Yeah. And the gun gets loose from the father's hand and... He has the daughter in a sleeper hold, which is another great wrestling reference that we can discuss.
I was like, oh, a superstars here after all.
And the son picks up the gun and shoots the father.
But he holds the gun at his father and then his father pulls a trigger, doesn't he?
Yeah, that's the big reveal.
Oh, did I just blow it? No it's fine. It's fine. Oh yeah that's the big reveal. No no no no no.
No. Sweet Jesus. So that gets the son institutionalized which I guess I guess. Right. I mean it seemed punitive,
but he was trying to save his sister, which is kind of like...
Well, I think he might have also like cracked.
Yeah.
That might be enough to throw a little kid or a little 10-year-old kid over the edge.
Sure.
Oh, and I guess they do take him out of the house and you're screaming, it wasn't me, it was the mirror, which I guess, well, we'll likely likely get that that that that that that that that we'll likely, that that that will likely, that will likely, that will likely, that will likely, that that that will likely get that will likely get that that that that will likely get that that that that that will likely get, that that that that might that might that might that might that might be that might be that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that might that will likely, that will likely, that will likely, that will likely, that will likely, that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that will likely get that, that might that might that might that might that might that might that might be that, that might be that, that, that might that that, that now we can sort of back out into the now timeline. So we're following these
two kids as adults. Kaylee's trying to solve the puzzle I guess of this
mirror and figure out why it's haunted. Which she did never find.
No. So but so there's the thing of her eating the light bulb and there's just little stuff that keeps happening like the brother walks out of the house and he's he's trying to make a phone call
outside of the house and then it comes back and he's his sister starts talking
to him and it turns out he's just been inside the house like slumped down on a
wall talking on his cell phone to no one yeah so like the house is really fucking with their heads and it just keeps the mirror the the mirror the the the the mirror the mirror the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th the the th thus th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th th the th th th th thus thus is is thus is the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the or the mirror I'm sorry, keeps walking with their heads and that just keeps increasing and increasing. Yeah.
And then she thinks she sees her mother coming for her and so she stabs her.
And then it turns out she stabbed her fiance.
Yeah.
And at that point I think you can kind of tell where it's going to go, but it takes forever to
get there from there. That's really really my my my my my my my that's they don't explain why the mirror this like piece of home decor
Has all this power right and they don't they just take so long getting from the dead fiancee to the ultimate the ultimate I don't know the ending yeah, I mean, it's the big reveal it's the big it's the big it's the big? It's the big? It's the crescendo. Yeah, the crescendo. Yeah, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the they. the they. the tree. tree. the ta. ta. ta. the the the ta. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the? Yeah, the crescendo is a good, yeah. I mean, you know what's going to happen, you just don't know which of them it's going to be.
Right, and I don't think there was in any doubt that it wasn't the boy or wasn't the fiance. Like, oh right. You sort of know right away that she didn't actually kill her fiance and then he just disappears. Yeah. He shows up later again to the tho. the the the the the the th. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. the the th. the the the the the the the the the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. th. the. th. th. the. th. the. th. the. the. th. th. th. th. th. too that when the kids in the past were like running
out of the house, they saw all these like wraiths everywhere of like people that the mirror
had killed previously. And they were not scary. I don't know what it was about them, but I was like,
this seems not, I don't know. Yeah, so the two timelines are really like interweaving at this point. Yeah. As like she's killed, I, I, I, I, I, the kids, the kids, the kids, th. th. th. th. I th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, they. they. they. they. they. they's, they's, they. they. they. they. they. they. they. th. they. they. they. th. th. theeeea. they. th. are really interweaving at this point. As like she's killed her, she's killed, I think she's killed her fiance and then he disappears
and so they're like aggressively going after the mirror now and like at the same time they're
showing you the stuff that's happening with the family is that just keeps tumbling towards
its conclusion. Oh and even though her fiance's dead, he keeps calling her on the phone, right, right, right, the phone, the phone, thian, thian, thian, thian, thian, thian, thian, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, and thi, thi, thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thiii's thii's thiii's thi's thi's thi, and thi, and th phone. Right. Because the mirror can dial. Right. Or that was actually him?
No, he's dead. Because he shows up as a wraithleader. Oh, really? Yeah. It really was him.
Oh, I thought it was just the mirror fucking with it. No, because the mirror made her. He came to the
the house, I guess, to find her. And they keep seeing people in the house that the mirror has killed. Right. And there's like the woman that had the miscarriage, a lot of blood on her night gown, and
then they all have these weird mirror eyes. Yeah, which... And he shows up with
them. He's in the house with them. Okay, I assumed that was just like the mirror making an apparition to fuck with her, but I get you're probably right. I'm not, I'm not, you're probably probably, you're probably, I'm not, you're probably, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not Mr, I'm not, the the the the the the the the the the the the the, you, you, you're, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you, you're probably, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you're, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're probably, you're, you're, you, you're, you're, you're, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, th. I'm not, probably,. I didn't write this movie. Bob Oculus.
Enjoy my film.
So right, so the both timelines are heading towards their crescendos now.
So we know what the one with the family is.
It's, you know, the father basically shoots himself to break the curse on him so he doesn't
kill his kids I think. And he also says the devil is the devil the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is the devil is us. the devil is the devil is the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is us. the devil is the devil is the devil is. the devil is the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the devil. the devil. the devil. the devil. He. He. He. He. He is. He's. He's. He's. He's. He's. the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the devil is the the devil is the the the the the devil is. the the the the devil is. the the devil is. the devil is the devil is me which is something that I say in almost every episode of the show so I'm glad that the devil is
us? They made a big deal at the beginning of this movie about hydration and
then also they have all these dead. Well the one woman or the one person
had killed was totally like drained of all their fluids. Yeah They just dehydrated to death. And it kills plants plants that that that that that that that that that that that that. And their. And their. And their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. the the the their. the their. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the one. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the devil. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the devil is. the devil is. the the the devil is. the the the devil is. the devil is. the devil is. the the devil is. the devil is. the devil is. the devil is. the devil is. the devil is. to death. And it kills plants that are near it? Right. And I always have dead plants in my house, so maybe I have a
bad mirror. I don't know, they make a big deal out of hydrating and then it doesn't
really like come up again. I forget why I was mentioning the hydration. It's not
checkoff's hydration. No, no, not checkoffs Evian. So Tim, the brother, he sees himself alone in the room room, and th. And th. And th. And th. And th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the thii, the the thi, the the thi, thi, the thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the the the the thi, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the, the. theat, toge, toge, thae, they, the. they, they, their their, their, their, their, their, the brother, he sees himself alone in the room and he decides that he just wants
to end this once and for all and break the mirror with this hundred pound anchor thing.
So he sets off the alarm, they had this like complicated alarm system.
At one point she starts breaking the alarm clocks too and I was like, those are your alarms.
You set this up. What are you doing? Anyway, sorry. And so he And so he triggers the anchor to go.
And as soon as it flies, you realize
that his sister's been standing in front of the mirror
the whole time.
And he was just hallucinating that he was aluicinating
that he was just huasping her through the mirror.
And it basically hugging her through
the mirror, which is...
Right, drawing her to the mirror.
Oh, and then also he, the brother had called the police, but we thought the mirror was telling
him that the police weren't there.
But then the police really do show up.
Right, and arrest him for killing his sister.
So it's just reset the cycle on him. Yeah.
Being a psychopath.
And again, he's walking away from the house screaming,
it wasn't me.
It was the mirror.
Yeah, being thrown into a police car.
Also, I could not believe that in the past,
they would have like thrown this tiny,
upset boy into the care of the kids or anything.
That certainly existed in the suburbs in 2001.
I am sure of it.
So that's, that's the end of the movie.
Yeah.
Both timelines have crashed into each other and like, they're both sort of showing the
police coming to arrest the boy.
arrest the boy and the man. One thing that I really appreciated about this movie is that I had expected knowing that it was about a mirror was I expected
a lot of people looking in the mirror and then something happening behind them
which it really didn't do much of and I really I really like that. I thought
that was like nice restraint on your part Bob Oculus. It did a little
bit of the your reflection doesn't match what you're doing. Yeah, I'm okay with that. Yeah.
Yeah.
It's gonna be creepy if that ever happens.
Yeah.
We mean when that happens.
When the mirrors rise up.
Yeah.
So one thing, I thought this movie was really smart and well.
And I think it was an instance of the things that it was referencing and referenced well. To me me th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th me th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the the, theat the the the theat the theat theat, their their their their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the, the, the, the the the they. they. they. they. I, they. I, they. I, the, the, the, thin, thin, the. I, touuuu. I'm, teou. I'm, teou. I'm, thauuu. I'm, thau. thau. thau. thathings that it was referencing it referenced well. To me it felt like it was very much in vain with with Poultergeist. It had that sort of
like the tarnish on the suburban dream sort of feel to it like. But Poltergeist
has an Indian burial ground. It does. It explains itself a little better. Yeah. But I found and it has coach. Craig T. Nelson. Craig T. Nelson. Yeah. But it, I felt like they were both. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. And. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It has. It the. It has. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It has. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. I. the. I. Craig T. Nelson. Yeah. But it, I felt like they
were both, they were, they were cut of the same cloth, sort of, they had like that sort
of like, this is the disillusionment with the American Dream sort of thing going on, because
it's just this family. There's almost no one else involved in this movie. Yeah. And it's just this family falling apart.
Yeah.
I was thinking for a little bit that it was like,
it was sort of an allegory of the way we consume entertainment now
and culture.
Because people just become fixated on this mirror,
that was sort of like a screen as well,
and you're just losing touch with your family.
But I thought I was giving like, I'm thinking way too much about this I'm digging a little too
deep into it but yeah I thought it was smart like the way that they handled it
WWE would not promote that that message you can get the network just 999

Yeah, that, was it the sleeper at the end?
Yeah, I was like, well, they're, that's pretty well executed.
Owen Hart would be proud.
Too soon?
We all die in front of the mirror, I guess.
Oh, Jesus Christ.
Oh, man. Sorry, I didn't get so dark there. You know this movie is what it is. There's not a lot like I was looking
for like what it could be a metaphor for what they might be discussing but you
know and talking to my partner about it she was just like it's a movie about a
haunted mirror. Yeah just except that it's a yeah but no it's like this
allegory it's a movie about a haunted mirror yeah so this movie, unlike paranormal activity or insidious,
or any of the Annabelle or the conjuring or any of that sort of new school
of American horror that's coming out now, this one didn't have jump scares.
Yeah, which I liked.
I really appreciated.
Like everything was the subtle scare, everything like. It was building. It was like a psychological terror as opposed to like, I think that's why the the the the the the the their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I their, I that's their, I the their, I their, I the the the the thatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheatheat, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, they, they, they, they, they, they.... Like, they.. Like, they. Like, they. Like, they. Like, like, like, like It was like a psychological terror as opposed to like,
I think that's why the wraiths themselves were so ineffective
is because you were like, this isn't what I'm scared of.
I'm not scared of these things.
I'm scared of like what's going on in their heads
and in what's going, what's making them do.
I felt like the appearance of the mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror mirror because it was like, don't get cheap on me. You're getting cheap, yeah.
I just, I watched the, the Innocence recently, which is a British horror movie
that's, it's a retelling of the, turning of the screw.
It's sort of in the vein of the haunting.
It felt very similar to the haunting,
original 60s haunting, where like, they do show a little little little little little ghosts there, but it's done very ethereally.
It's not, it's not the mirrored eye people way.
Like, and I felt like this film was bringing a little bit of that in where it didn't have those like,
huh, moments. It was like, it was the slow burn. Yeah. And I think, you're right at points, it definitely definitely drug. But it was a valiant effort, I think, that that, that, that that that that thue. thue. thue. thue. thue. thue. thue. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, the valiant effort I think to do that slow burn. Yeah to keep
that stuff going like the whole thing with like the one time they did do the
what's in the mirror isn't actually behind you was with the the two statues
that had sheets on them and then there was a third statue that had a
sheet on it that appeared yeah and I actually really liked that because then she turns around and that and that and that that that that that th you th you th you th th th th th th th th th th th th is th is th is th is thus tho that th. that that that that that that that that that that that that that that tho that is that was that was that was that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that th. that was th. th. that was th. that was that was th. th. th. that was that was th. th. that was th. th. th. th. I was th. I was the the the the the the the the the. I was the. I was the. the. the. the. the. the. the. that's the. the. the. the. the. the. that's that appeared. Yeah. And I actually really liked that because then she turns around and that
statue is still there. Yeah. And so it's like, I thought that was a really nice move. And
then she just like marches right up to it and is like pulling the sheets off the statues.
I'm like, lady, no, get the fuck out. the fuck out. She's got a, you know, a no bullshit. thin' thin. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's, she's, she's, she's, she's, she's, she's, that she's, that she's, that she's, that she's that she's that she's that she's got, that she's got, that she's got, that she's got, that's that's that's like, that's like, that's like, that's like, that's, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I that's, I that's, I that's, I that's, I that's, I that's, I I I I I I that's, I I I I I I I. via her fiance, who also seems to be her boss, that she's been like printing out glossy eight
by tens of death scenes, to use in her little presentation that she does in front of the
cameras when we begin our mirror experiment. And I was like, lady, you got to get those off the printer. Like you work in an office. You can't just leave the their. And their. Like, you go get whatever you just printed all right off the printer, you know?
It's true, and especially if you're making a murder dossier.
Yeah, if you're printing out crime scene photos of a woman who has bled out.
Yeah. You hit print, you hit control P.
You hit control the p- th. You th. problems, put a ring on it, you know. Probably because of her fantastic ponytail.
Her hair was an intense beast in this movie. I thought it was a wig because I
always think that and I looked up and I read and I literally read an interview

I don't know anything about Dr. Who. Yeah. She, one of the people that hang out.

Cool.
Do it then.
Katie, are you ready to come with me to the numeric rating?
I'll be ready when, you know, after you go.
All right. I really liked this movie.
And like, pleasantly surprised.
There's been a few of these movies that have shown up on Netflix that I didn't know then There's a movie called The Pact which has a James Vanderbilt in it.
No, that's Dawson. Oh shit who's the dude who's in Sleepy Hollow and Casper
Van Deen. Oh he's in Scream 2 I think. Is he maybe 3? Who cares?
But these movies that they're they're not fantastic but like they're fine. They're fine horror movies. They're like they're like they're like they're like they're like they're like they're like they're like they're like they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. th. th. thi thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th fantastic, but like, they're fine.
They're fine horror movies.
They're like, they're actually putting their own little twists on it and taking like chances,
I guess.
And I felt like Oculus is that.
It took chances with what it had.
And I would, if someone asked me, hey, I want to watch a dumb movie. You think it's a dumb movie? Yeah, I mean, th th th th th th th th th th th th th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th I th th th th th th thi I th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi they're thi they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're they're thi. I' thi. I'm thi. I'm thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. they're not they're not they're not they're not they're not dumb movie, I would totally recommend this movie. You think it's a dumb movie?
Yeah, I mean, it's not like...
Because it's not really like a slasher or like a, you know...
If someone's like, hey, I want to watch a really smart horror film, I'll say, watch
the haunting.
Yeah, I'm 't the thing. But it's also not stitches. Oh, God. Yeah, it's not stitches, but it's not like, I want to watch something that's fun, that's
not trashy.
Yeah.
That's like, you know, that's not just a bunch of people being murdered and like.
Yeah, so I think it's not dumb.
Yeah, but dumb was call you on your shit.
That's how this podcast works.
I would totally recommend this.
I would give this movie a seven.
Yeah.
On my arbitrary rating scale, I would say that this is a seven.
You're also making me mad with this movie a seven. until we have a scattergraph, isn't it real? And then it went till I could hold it in my hands.
I jokingly gave this movie a seven at the beginning of this episode, which I am actually
going to stand by it because I really enjoyed it.
I was scared, is scared as scared as I ever get, which is, you know, something.
I would totally watch it again.
Oh, okay.
So even knowing the outcome I would watch it again because...
It's beautifully shot. It really is. It really is. And I... Oh, February is Women in Horror Month.
Oh, and I really felt like the women were doing the heavy lifting in this movie.
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Tim was not doing the same as Kaylee.
And even the mom, her dissent into madness, I thought was fantastic.
And the little girl I thought was fantastic and the little girl I
thought was great. Yeah, the young Kaylee was just excellent. So I really was
appreciative of a female cast that was just nailing it which is not to say that
Slater from Days and Confused did a bad job but yeah every time you say Slater
I could just think of AC Slater. This has been our
podcast about characters we liked from shows that
aired between 90 and 99. So yeah, seven. Nice. Yeah. Hey guys we liked it. It was
new and we liked it. And we agreed. More importantly, not more importantly, but more
confusingly, it's new and I liked. Yeah. I love that. I think I liked it more knowing
that you liked it and it's new because it just makes me feel like I'm like, feels like it's sticking it to you a little bit.
Sticking it to your tude.
Well, I mean, it is again, like, it's, you know, it's one of those things that prove
that like I don't give newer movies the shot that I should be because I get burned by ghost ships and the happenings. You did see Annabelle in the theater too, which is like, you're trying.
I did that for my friend Becky.
She wanted to see that movie.
I gave the conjuring a shot and that was a fucking load.
I did not see that, but damn it.
Everyone I've talked to you has, we'll keep watching these movies because there is going to be an oculus in, you know, the pile of garbage that I just
watched. So, on some level it's also like, these are, my wheelhouse is 80s, crap movies. Like, I could
watch Rocktober blood into the fucking cows come home. Like, that's a movie that really, like, that caliber that ca-fewa- like th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th that caliber of like crappy 80s horror film I love.
Yeah. So like when I want to watch a movie I'm not going for the WWE Studios film from 2014 or 2013 or whatever.
Yeah. So but it can be rewarding to do that. Yes, you are right.
Pep App should give newer things a shot every once. I like it when you say that I'm right.
Speaking of crappy horror movies from the 80s, what do you want to do next week? Oh, we're not doing a crappy horror movie. You're doing one of the best. We're
going to discuss that. Return of the Living Dead, one of the quintessential zombie movies,
in my humble opinion. Interesting. Well, you'll have to tune in next week to hear where we may may not agree so much. Oh, man, come on. th that. Oh, that. Oh, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. We're, we're th.
