Today, we are doing a very special episode of WhereWaf Ambulance. I'm to be talking about the 1982 cult classic slasher feminist movie boobs.
Boobbs. Slumber Party Massacre and then we're going to be talking to Kelly
Moore who is a writer and producer on the indie horror film
other halves which is currently in production. So Katie, like you said we're
going to be talking about Slumber party massacre and if you're a first-time listener, we are going to be doing spoilers. So if you care
about that kind of stuff, watch the movie first. This one you probably don't need to. It's pretty

Yeah. I mean my very first note says titties are the opening credits even over
yet and then nope. I might have to put a bell sound affected for every time we say
titties. Yeah I think I estimated I would say it 14 times I think I met too.
This movie is directed by Amy Holden Jones, aka Amy Jones, and it's written by Rita May
Brown, which for those of you who don't know was a feminist writer, she wrote a book called
the Ruby Fruit Jungle, and now she writes like cozy mysteries, you know, SolvehMystries
with a Kitty Cat kind of thing. And this was originally a, supposed to be a parody of the slasher genre.
And then Roger Corman agreed to do the movie, it was like, nope, it's just a straight
slasher.
Yeah.
They took all the parody out of it.
Yeah.
And yeah, it's.
So the premise of the movie is that that is that the movie is that is the movie is the movie is that the movie is that the movie is that the movie is that the movie is that the movie is that the movie is that that the movie is that the movie is that that the movie is that the movie of the movie is that there are these pretty high school girls who take
gym class basketball super seriously.
Because if there's anything that high school girls of attractive nature take seriously, it's
gym class.
Maybe they were practicing for like a team sport, but I'm just going to go ahead and say
it was gym class.
I think they were, I think they were the girls basketball team because next next week was baseball tryouts. They were going to be on the baseball team next week. Oh I see. Really like what
this movie is is it's a cautionary tale about not inviting the girl who can do
lay-ups to your party I think at its core. I mean am I wrong? I mean I'm wrong. I think it's a cautionary tale about why you
should read Playgirl magazine. I am going to, I just watched this movie right
before I came here and I am seriously going home and looking up that issue to
see if I can find sly with that vacant look in his eyes. So okay so these high
school girls are having a slumber party.
They have excluded Valerie who is the new girl and then some dudes come over.
Yeah, they're like, hey guys, come on in.
Of course, because everyone invites the peeping tom shit bag into the party.
Sure. And then everybody gets murdered by a guy who has escaped from... Jail. Jail! Because he loves them, it's very confusing. Also speaking of confusing, every...
all of the women in this movie kind of looked alike. So for the first 10 minutes I was like, is that the
gym teacher? Wait, is that the gym teacher? You really tell apart from the get-go was Diane because she looks
like an 80s snooky.
Oh God, she did look snookyish.
And also, I'm just, I'm going to just tell you everything I think about this movie
right now.
I think it was cast based on like how good their legs were because everyone had fantastic
legs in this movie. Oh, and th, and th, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, thi, thi, and, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thithis movie. Oh, and titties. Three.
Yeah, I mean, so it was supposed to be this parody critique, sort of feminist take on the
slasher genre written by Rita May Brown. And I got Roger Cormanned. Like, yeah, there are, there
there are, like, my first note is boobs in under
two minutes. And the shot of the boobs is the woman just staring into the mirror at her boobs.
At her boobs. And it's so weird, it's like... I mean, within the first, I would say eight minutes,
there's boobs, but at least 12 sets of titties. Yeah. Four. And... I'll be digging them. You don't have to count them.

No way, leaving them in.
And two, like, two ladies being murdered within the first eight minutes of the tooie.
Yeah.
With a cordless drill.
I didn't even know, first of all, I wasn't born yet in 1982 I know.
I didn't. I know. I didn't know that they had cordless tools. I kept being like, where
is this plugged in? There's a movie call. They, I didn't know they had them, this other culture.
First of all, 1982 is totally the 70s. Everything just looks like the 70s. Yeah, a lot of feathered hair, a lot of really short basketball shorts. Yeah, it was, it was, it sometimes forget that the decades just bleed into one another it's not like
the hangover of the decade. All the sudden 80s hit and everyone had huge
shoulder pads and skinny ties. Yeah. What were we saying? I was talking about
cordless drills. There's a movie called Driller Killer in the 70s
which is all about a dude who kills people with a power drill. He finds out that you can hook a power drill up
to a battery pack that you wear around your waist.
So, that's the, yeah.
I just sort of remember in like fright and mare,
I feel like she had it plugged in.
Yeah.
It's just plugged into the wall.
It's not very portable.
And on the note of feminism,

I think they talked about Dusty Baker for a while.
They smoke weed, they look at porn.

But they're still punished for sexual,
but they're still punished for sexuality,
so I don't know.
Not so feminist.
They're almost punished for being sexual beings. Right. Existing as something that, yeah.
But also the dudes get killed too, so whatever.
Everybody dies.

I think other than one of the final kills,
it's only guys that you see get murdered.
All the kills of the women happen off screen.
Wait, okay, so first there's the phone see that. Then you just see her body later.
Then Linda, who is punished for her commitment to academics
when she goes back to get her school books.
And you don't see her, you just see the blood come out under the door.
Oh yeah.
You see her get like blapsed with the drill.
Also, drill, I understand the metaphor of the drill,
swinging between the guys legs. But the the the the the the the the the th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thu, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, and then, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, and then, tho, tho, to, to, and then, to, and then, tho, tho, tho, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, and, and, and, and, th, and, th., th., tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thin, tho, tho, tho, thoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooeners. And then you see the girl get slashed the girl who was hungry for pizza right after the death of the pizza driver.
My favorite person in the movie. She was excellent. She was like, I feel better
already eating that piece of pizza. I thrown out of his the. there's definitely some satire going on and there's some like decent comedic things going on in it, I think.
Like little like, not comedic, more subtle, funny things.
Like the whole thing with like the women being so focused on sports, like the, like, just like breaking those stereotypes.
Yeah, I couldn't tell if that was meant to be comedic or if it was just like a point being made,
but being made poorly.

I thought it was great.
Yeah, so that was fine. I thought the acting was fine. Yeah, it was fine. It was hard
to tell because it was so blurry on YouTube, but I could see them emoting a little bit.
Like the directing seemed to be fine. I think that just the script got like, I mean, there
were some neat stuff of just like people like cutting away to different characters
that were doing the same sort of motions and actions and like going between them that was really neat.
I thought the way she did that.
There was one cut that I really liked where the headless Irish boyfriend is in
the car. She like finds the his body and as it's like it cuts like from the stump of his neck to the strawberry dacker. Yeah, the blender I was like, oh I was like, oh, that that was like that was like that was like that was like that was like that was like that was like that was like that was a a that was a that was a that was a that was a that was a that was a that was a nice. So in that movie the rapes she's rape scenes were all shot in silhouette and they were all
kept off screen basically and Roger Korn was like nope and went back had somebody else go back in and
reshoot the rape scene so they're on the screen so you saw a test an ass and ass. And it's just like, uh, yeah, I mean, and I understand he's getting asses and seats,
and I understand that, and it's the lowest common denominator and all that.
I mean, the shower scene in this movie is,
it's the, they're walking into the shower and one woman says to another,
I think, what'd she say?
I think my tits are getting bigger.
Oh, I then there's just boobs and butts and like people just washing
their butts and all that.
And I was like, wait, is washing your butt erotic?
I don't know.
And then sharing the bar of soap with your friend to wash her butt?

Like, we hadn't gotten a Friday the 13th part 6 at this point,
so it wasn't like, oh, I'm gonna beat you to death in a sleeping bag.
Like, we haven't up, like, up the ante that much yet,
or like all the Night has no real motive he just
gets out of jail and starts killing but there's no no connection. He doesn't
talk until the end of the movie. No and he looks fucking upsettingly like my
next-door neighbor. Upsettingly. He reminded me of a Bob from Twin Peaks too.

and it was fun.

It's definitely a yellowel at the screen kind of movie.
You don't need to hear the dialogue. You know exactly what It's disappointing that a feminist slasher
would have so little substance. Well that's I I've been reading a bit about it
like different like bitch magazine has a big write-up on it online and just and
then going to Rotten Tomatoes and reading the reviews where it's like I don't
see this as being feminist at all or it seems people either coming
down like it's not feminist at all or it's very feminist and you're just not getting the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. I th. I th. I th. California, Leggy. The Laurie Strode sort of Halloween thing. Yeah. But she is not,
she is the least wholesome of them, despite being like the youngest, I think

Well, no, because they're she is the, she's the only one who isn't being ogled through the entire film. The rest of the girls constantly have,
whether it's the killer or the two creep dudes or the shitty next door neighbor.
There's all these men. You thought Mr. Contact? I could not understand them. Something like that. Mr. Conrad? I wrote down Mr. Contact.
I believe his name is Mr. Conrad. He was a creep.
He seemed like, they all just, all the dudes in the movie, like,
I have a note that just says, uh, all the dudes in this movie are scuzz buckets.

just staring and raiding the women. Yeah. And what could be more feminist than
that really? I was like oh when are we just gonna have the porkies like drill a
hole in the wall staring scene like yeah we didn't have to do that because the film just did that for us? tell us first what Other Haves is all about? Yes, so other halves is a techno horror film.
It basically tells a story of a team of programmers who develop a dating app,
which basically tracks all of your online activity, your post on Facebook, things you might
say on Reddit, you know, Yelk reviews you write, articles you read on the New York Times,
and aggregates all of that data to find your perfect match by, instead of you
posting a profile, it connects with what you actually do and say.
But then the film is a round of idea that, you know, that's kind of a scary idea,
so it starts to go terribly, terrily wrong, and things that are scary start to happen.... Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It. It's, it. It's, it. It's, it. It's, it. It's, it. It's, it. It's, it. Where did the inspiration come from?
Were there any films that particularly inspired you or where?
I mean, you wrote, you have a writing credit on this, right?
Yes. So this is, I co-wrote this with Matt Price, Matthew T. Price, I think his official credit who was also the director on this
film, and this was, oh six to 12 months ago it started, I live in the Bay Area
now and Matt lives in Los Angeles that I was down visiting and we went out
and had this kind of long discussion around, so it but it started as like this philosophical discussion of you know like
Scenes and movies and we had this idea of a person chasing himself, but in the end he kills or a person is being stopped and he kills the soccer, but the stocker turns out to be himself
So these kind of like nuanced things and then we knew it wanted to have something to do with technology and the technology and the the the the the the the the to to to to to to to to to to to to to to technology??? this this this this this this this this this this this to this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this this???? this this this this this philosophical philosophical this philosophical this this this this philosophical?????? this this this this this this this this this this this this this this the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the theylolololololololof. It originally started in the first draft, it was like a really crappy Instagram knockoff
that you would take pictures of, know pictures of you know pictures of yourself and it would like make you look better and that was your other half
but that was not nearly as fun and exciting as a dating app in the end so it
sort of started with that and then kind of more from from there.
Awesome were there were there any films or anything that inspired this?
Like anything you were like sort of making reference to or... I kind to think if there were the the their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. th. th. But. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. But th. I kind of think if there were films.
I know we discussed it in terms of context in terms of books.
It's really there's a lot of Jekyll and Hyde kind of themes going on in regards to that.
Just like as we were, you know, writing and approaching the different particular scenes
we would think about particular movies, like the opening scenes of Scream are always very,
very kind of well done in all of the, what is it, four movies that they have out?
So watching those and using those is kind of like a how do you really build up this suspense and terror, but I don't know if there were any one particular film that we identified as like, yes, this is what is what we th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, this is what we this is what we thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, we would thi, we would thi, we would thi, we would thi, we would thi, we would thi, we would thi thi thi thi thi, we would thi thi, we would thi thi, we would thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, thiiii, thi, thi, thi, thi and terror but I don't know if there were any one particular film that we identified is like yes this
is what we are trying to be or not to be. Okay. What's it like trying to make an
indie film? How have you funded it? How have you gotten actors? Just kind of
walk us through how you make a movie. Yeah, well I'm still, it's been a crazy process.
So you know, after we kind of developed the initial script, we brought Kurt on, or excuse
me, Kurt was already working with Matt as a producer on another project, and so we started
talking about this, realized it was something that we could film relatively inexpensively.
I kind of came on as a producer because I lived in the
Bay Area and we do have, we had a contact up here in terms of a location that
we could shoot in for free and it's a pretty awesome location and that kind of was
like that made it a reality for us. So from there we decided to go out and
basically fundraise so we bothered all of our friends and family
and asked them either for money or to put us and basically fundraise. So we bothered all of our friends and family and asked them either for money
or to put us in contact with people who had money
and raise the budget.
That was also kind of done concurrently,
or concurrently with actually casting and putting everything together.
We originally slated to shoot in the fall.
It sort of like all happened really, really quickly.
Realize that was going to be nearly impossible.
And so ended up pushing the shoot to January.
But in terms of finding actors, you know, you go out on casting websites that are kind of established.
We did try to cast both in San Francisco since
that's where we're shooting and in Los Angeles. And we auditioned people in
both places. You put the sides up online for each character and people send in
audition tapes and so there's you know fun couple nights where you get to sit
there and watch people in them. I feel like I would love that. Yeah it was kind of fun especially in you know casting some of the male roles like th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. We're th. We're th. th. We're th. We're th. We're th. We're th. We're th. We're thi the thi thi th. We're th. We're th. We're th. We're th. We're th, especially in, you know, casting some of the male roles, like
there's a male role whose basic job is to be very good looking.
And so that was, to me, like, we trust you, Kelly, that you can determine good looking,
because they want to play into like, oh, I don't know. I was like, it's all right, I got this. I don't see attractiveness in other men.
Exactly. Are there things that you've wanted to do but haven't been able to because of budget limitations or how is that working out? In terms of the actual production of it? Yeah.
Oh yeah, I mean, sure there are. You know, it would be every time that we would go back and do a revision of? Yeah. Oh yeah, I mean sure there are, you know, it would be every time that we
would go back and do a revision of the script, like Matt and I would be like, hey, we wrote
a scene in a totally new location, so we want to shoot a scene in a cafe and Kurt would
be the voice of reason to, you know, to us crazy artistic types and much money, both in terms of actually finding a location and then you have to pay the actors for it and the crew for another day.
So it certainly restricted us in terms of like where we could shoot
and how long we could shoot and that is, I oftentimes find in creative projects like having
restrictions is somewhat liberating in a sense because you know what you have to work with it.
Sometimes if you're given in endless budget it's like, well, why don't we do this?
You know, we have the money to do it.
So we really had to think creatively in terms of how to solve some problems and how to
make everything work.
Oh, that's awesome. this scene, and we can't shoot it, you know, shoot with it the next day because it has to have not blood on it because, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, we, and the the the the the th, th, th, and th, and th. that you didn't, I don't think they probably have in Hollywood. But, who knows, maybe they're quibbling over $25 sweatshirts too. Maybe. I'm sure someone is for sure. So like hmm but
this was always set out to be a horror movie like do you have a history with
horror films or are you a lifelong horror fan or? Yeah so I come into this I'm a
horror fan but not an officionado I guess would be the best way to put that.
Me too. And I think Matt, you know it's probably similar guess would be the best way to put that. Me too.
And I think Matt, you know, it's probably similar to what I have perceived your relationship
as being in terms of what I've listened to your work is one who's really, really knows
horror and the other, maybe likes it, but it's not as knowledgeable yet about all of that. horror fan, very into the history, you know, knows all of the obscure films. I
like to watch Saw and you know the Ring and that kind of thing, but I've ever
written horror before this, so I had Matt and I met in a screenwriting group
like 2007 or something like that, like eight or eight years ago. And I've before this written along the line, more things along the line of drama.
Like I have a couple of like actiony adventure sort of things.
Nice.
There's like a couple of thrillers, but you know, those are all out of the possibility of things that are easy to make for not a lot of money.
So we did, to kind of go back to your initial question their their their that are easy to make for not a lot of money.

yes, we did know that this was going to be a horror film,
and I think that a lot of independent films are proportionally higher than many others,
a, because you can, there's kind of a good market for it.
Like there are people out there who are really into this particular genre.
So there's an audience which makes it a more sellable thing.
And it's not too difficult to shoot for relatively inexpensive.
Right, right, right, right.
Sort of that Roger Corman School of Filmmaking, yeah.
Exactly. So how can people see other haves? When do you anticipate it being done? Yeah, so basically where we are is we are in the post-production phase right now,
which means like I get to hear about things, but I probably won't see a cut for a month or two.
So where we are, all of our footage is with our editor, and he will be working on his cut,
and then he will work with Matt, the director, to do a director's cut.
We're hopefully anticipating that'll be done
around the beginning of May.
And that's when you get to start adding all the fun things
like doing your color correcting,
adding your sound mixing, getting your soundtrack,
and laying that in there.
Okay. With the idea that we'll have a final version of it done late summer, like around August.
And then basically what happens is we take it out to film markets and try to get somebody
to pay us money for it.
And then it will either end up distributed online in theaters.
You know, that's something that we hire other people who help us figure out how to take
those next steps.

Yeah, and I think especially given the movie the slumber party massacre.

But yeah, so I mean one of the things that is very important in my writing and also in
mass writing and that we've kind of bonded over is really the creation of complex female characters in our work.
And we really wanted to play with that in this script.

five of whom are female and two of whom are men.
And so really it's the women who are taking on the roles
of both our heroes and our villains.
And everybody kind of has two different sides of black, white, and gray zones.
That was really something that was important to us. And I know that that that that that that that that that that that that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that women that w w w w w w. that something that was important to us.
And I know that women in horror have often played kind of a,
you know, sometimes they are the ones who survive in the end
and may defeat the villain.
But there's also kind of this history of, you know,
they're there to show off some nice little boobs.
So there's that side of thing.
And then also, because we're set in the the the the the the the tech, the tech, the tech, the tech, the tech, that side of thing and then also because we're set in
the tech world in which is a very male-dominated field the idea of having an
app that was essentially developed by women right was something that gave us a
lot to play with with our actual characters and what they're saying and doing.
Oh that's awesome. That's really cool. Yeah yeah I think we need more of that in film for sure.
Yeah.
Right.
And our goal was not to make something that was heavily, you know, heavy-handed in terms of pushing any particular agenda.
So it could still be enjoyable and fun, but really developing roles for women that were not seen every day. Yeah, I like that a lot. Yeah, just
treating women as people. I think that's a good idea. Imagine oral. No, no, don't be.
