I think. Hello and welcome to another episode of Werewolf Ambulance.
I'm Alan. Hi, Alan. Hi, Katie. And we are here t drive-in classic that people don't give
the love that maybe it deserves? It's a roller coaster of emotions. This is one
I feel like I just got off a roller coaster. I would have to start for the
beginning would say that I thought it was fantastic. There are a lot of
great moments in it. It was better than expected I will say that.
Excellent. So to start this, I will say that. Excellent.
So to start, this movie was directed by Graydon Clark.
Big, big fan.
You've never heard it.
I've never heard of him.
If you're a Mystery Science Theater fan, I am actually.
He directed Final Justice, the Joe Don Baker movie.
He directed, I did like that movie a lot. I think it's called Angels Revenge.
Yeah, he directed a bunch of crappy movies, like low budget.
And without warning.
Movies that deserve to be mocked, clearly.
Well, come on.
There's some good effort put into those things.
I don't know if they totally deserve to be mocked.
But the Angels Revenge movie is actually where he met Jack Palance, who is in, without warning.
And every other movie on the planet according to his IMDB page, which is awesome.
Our younger viewers, our listeners might remember him from City Slickers.
Yeah.
Curly.
Curly, the legend of Curly is cold.
He is Curly.
So this film also stars Martin Landau, who you did not care for very much.
No, he served, I'm sure we can get into this later, but I felt that he served almost no purpose
in this film except to determine what war he was a vet of until he mentioned
the jungle.
Because he looks really old and I was like a Korea?
I don't know.
And then he, like, with about 15 minutes left, he was like, I was in the jungle.
And I was like, oh, no.
So let's, oh, it also stars a young,
I think this was David Caruso's first film.
I was convinced that David Caruso was dead
until Alan pointed out that he's on CSI Miami.
So I guess he's alive.
So it starts David Caruso.
Larry Storch shows up in this movie.
And for fans of, I don't know accelerated age like myself
You'll remember him from F Troop and a few other things in the 70s
He's just he's a fun comedic actor and
Kevin Peter Hall is in this movie and he was the alien he was the guy in the alien suit. Oh. And he was also the alien and predator. OK.
He is dead.
He is dead.
Somebody's got to be dead.
Who's not Jack Pallance?
But it's interesting because this movie is cited as being an influence on the film predator.
Swarzenegger brought it up in interviews.
I could see that.
Alien, hunting people. So let's just give a quick the quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick quick the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. the thoom. thi. thi, thoom. thoom. thoom. hea, he hea, he hea, he hea. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He was. He was. He was, th. He was th. He was th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the th. the th. He was was was was the th. He was the th. He was totally. So let's just give a quick recap of
Without Warning. You might also know this movie real quick as it was known as
Without Warning, it came without warning and alien shock. Alien shock?
Yeah. Oh, man, this movie. I should say that I, when you had emailed me the trailer and said I think we should
watch this and do this for our next podcast, I watched it and I was hanging out at my
friend's nine-year-old daughter was there and she watched it over my shoulder on my phone.
And when the trailer was over she goes, that looks weird. and nobody tells the truth like a third grader and she
was not wrong. This is weird. It was weird but this movie was totally in my my
wheelhouse like I felt like it completely hit every every mark that I wanted to
yeah in a sci-fi horror movie.
All right, so a quick recap of the film.
It starts off with a father out for a walk in the wood,
smoking his cigar, holding a shotgun, as you do.
This movie is largely about hunting. People hunting animals, aliens hunting people, people hunting.
People hunting.
Who's the hunter?
Who's the prey, Katie?
I was about to say who's the hunty,
but pray is a better word.
And the today's the huddy, they.
And the toy, yeah.
Okay, so this guy, yeah.
I think I just said stumped up.
I mean stumped double. I'm sorry. And a Tom still like Stump Double. Yeah. Yeah. I think I just said Stump Double. I meant Stump Double. I think he said stepdaughter.
So he goes he bangs on the side of a trailer or a Winnebago and embrouses this obviously middle
age gentleman in a Hawaiian shirt unbutton to the naval. just wants to read his books? So yeah, we won't get the full recap, but it starts off ridiculous and just stays
ridiculous the rest of the time like the the villain of this movie is?
An alien that you don't see until the very end, but the alien controls these little baby
alien guys.
Yeah, they're his weapons.
Yeah, his weapons.
They're basically like Chinese throwing stars that are also starfish, that are also aliens,
that he throws through the air and they've, you never see them throwing, thrown,
you just see them flying through the area. And they like jump onto your skin and they go
fee-fee-foo before they hit you. And they like have these tentacles, the dig into
your skin. But when they fly through the air they basically just look like, at
first I said laundry disks and then I said pizza dough because I don't know.
I called them the flying hairy discs when we first said,
because they had kind of like weird wiring on them or something.
Yeah, they were, they looked, when they caught onto the skin,
they had like these tentacles that would dig in and then all this ketchup and what looked like hot Chinese mustard
that you get in the packets when you get awesome. Yeah, they'd pulsate in these tentacles would be like, I'm doing it with my hand right now
so you can totally see it,
a podcast listeners at home, how cool it looked.
But flying through the air, it was just like,
it's a nice, a pizza pie.
Yeah, but I don't know.
I don't want to get effect over CGI most days. Oh yeah, totally. And we should also mention, I don't know if we did that this was 1980, so it was...
Right, filmed in 79, released in 80.
Yeah.
So, the father and son, they get attacked by the flying discs, cut two teens, hopping into
into a van for a day, at the swimming hole with David Caruso in upsettingly short shorts.
Oh, so he's so pale and they are so short.
And a sweatshirt with no shirt underneath it, he was just kicking it.
Almost nude.
So they pull up to a nearly abandoned gas station as every group of teens in a van does in every horror movie.
Right, yeah, which I appreciate. I mean it's even sort of mocked in a cabin in the woods.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And this is one of many classic horror troops that appears in this movie,
of which I have made a list in front of me. Yeah, I feel like it hit, like I said again,
it hit all the right boxes for me. It was like they set set out to make a horror movie and they watched a few horror movies
and they said this is what you do in a horror movie. Yeah, they made their checklist and they hit
them. You know, and the slasher, who's the weirdo in the woods.
He's a hunter, he has all kinds of taxidermy animals all over his gas station.
And he threatens them to not go down to the lake because there's hunters down there.
The gas station guy always has to sort of be the omen.
Yeah.
I actually wonder if this movie was what Kevin in the woods was referencing because it's so spot-on
to that.
The Harbinger and all that stuff.
So then they go.
It's a deep cut though.
I mean this is like, was this movie ever popular?
I think it was big in, um, so I found out, or yeah, I found out about this movie from EvilSpeak Magazine.
They were doing a write-up of sci-fi, horror, drive-in movies.
Okay.
And I think this movie was pretty big in the drive-in
when it came out in the 80s, like, it was just made the rounds and a lot of people saw
it. So it wouldn't be, you know, beyond a reason. Yeah, that they had seen't, this movie. And they get, they get their gas,
they ignore the harbinger, they go down to the lake,
reservoir, pond, puddle.
I couldn't make out what they were swimming in.
Yeah, I think of, they say it's a lake.
It's also like clearly cold.
There are no leaves on the trees. You you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, th. they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, they they're they're they're they're they're they they they they they they they they get, they get, they get, they get, they get, they get, they get, they get, they get, they the trees. You can tell that it's cold and they're like wearing,
they like get in there like, it's so nice and everybody looks like they wish they were dead.
For our second movie in a row, I'm going to assume that the actors wish they were dead.
They're also, for the second movie in a row, we're going to be critical of their outfits, like a bikini top and just khaki pants.
Just like long khaki pants.
That's not a look.
That's not a good look.
Chee-Kinos, I believe.
I did say chinos earlier.
I didn't know if I was going to use that woody.
I do, I should mention quickly that while they were out the gas station, the potty. And they were like, he he he he because that's what girls do. And that's where they first encounter a crazy
Vietnam vet Martin Landau. Yes. And that's where they see their graffiti, no chance, no help, no escape.
Which is a Metallica album. So yeah, they're back there, they're at the lake, they're swimming.
They're going to the bone zone. Yeah, Daviduso and his hot lady friends start making out in the water and then immediately
move to the Star Wars blanket that's on the beach. Yeah and then the other
couple's like, I don't know, why don't we take the radio for a walk? They like
walk about 50 yards quickly say oh well this wasn't very fun the radio wasn't working. Oh good why won't the radio the radio the radio the radio the radio th. the radio the radio th. the the th. the the the th. the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi's thi's thi's tho. thi's. the's the's th. th. th. I's. they's. th. thi's. thi. I's. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. I's is. th. th. th. th. th. the the the the the the the the thin. thin. the. the t. t. t. too. too. t. too. t. t. t. too. t. too. the the the too. the th. I's. th radio isn't working. Oh good, why won't the radio work? Let's walk back quickly." And they turn and walk back to find the Star Wars blanket empty.
Right. Right. Well, oh they must be in the van. Well maybe they took a walk. Oh
where is everybody? Oh yeah, we're going out of chronological order, totally
confusing the plot of this film. Where we forgot to mention that earlier we encounter Larry Storch as the scout leader
taking a bunch of Cub Scouts through a walk in some water
and he tells them to go find a rock or a stick to take home to their parents.
Well, he tries to light a cigarette by hitting a rock into another rock,
which I don't even see how the fuck that's gonna work. And then Larry Storch Ties and the children run away screaming with women's voices. It was really weird. Yeah like children's
children can scream but I don't know why they didn't use children screaming
they used like cigarette smoking. It was like Patty and Selma screaming it was not
it was not good. So then of course back to the the van and them running away and
once again if you're a teenager and you start screwing around you're gonna
die in a harsh. Sure. So yeah we we lose track of David Caruso and his date for
the evening and they the other couple are, yeah, our protagonist. Greg and Sandy.
Go out for a walk trying to find them after they have some lunch and change their clothes.
Yeah, like, this is, it's so, it takes forever.
Sandy falls in a hole. I'm like, oh, she's going to be in this hole for a while.
They pull her right out of the hole.
It's like, what, no, it doesn't doesn't, it doesn't, it doesn't, it doesn't, the, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the, the, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, what, no, it doesn't matter. Post hole, they find a check, and the check
is where they find all these bodies.
They find David Caruso and the lady,
and the son and the father.
And the Holy Ghost.
Larry Storch.
Oh, it's Larry Storch. Even better than the Holy Ghost is where the plot just, you're like, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the th, the, the, the, the the the the, the the the thi, thi, they they they they they they find, they find they find they find, they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they, they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they the, the, the, the, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, uh, where, uh, where, uh, where, uh, where, they find, uh, they find, they find, they find, they find, they find, they is where the plot just, you're like, oh, this is awesome. Right, because it just got real, pretty good,
it was brutal.
Gross out effects in there.
It was gross.
Like somebody's eye is missing.
Some of the blood-sucking Chinese mustard starfish things are still stuck to them
and they're tanned plulsating and shit. And then like, this is where the plot is where th is where thia thia thi plot, thi plot, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th. th. th. this is. this is where. this is where. this is. this. this is. this. this. this is. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th for a while. This is where they got into, I'm sure, budgetary things.
They were like, well, we showed you a bunch of stuff,
now people are going to talk for 45 years.
Yeah, I think they like opened to the box that had money on it
and like a moth flew out.
And they were like, fuck,'s the guy, the Greg is like, oh Sandy, I'll get help.
You wait here, alone, in the dark.
Like, what no, you fucking idiots.
Don't be so stupid.
That's all.
It's just another one of those things that makes me mad.
You can both go in the bar.
Just get in the bar. Just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, just, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the. the, the. the, the. the. the, the, the. the. the, the, the. the. the, the. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th. th. th. th. th. th. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. th to. th to. th th the, the, the, the, the goes into the bar and explains to the patrons
that there's flying discs that are killing people.
And they're like, oh, you've seen them.
Oh. Well, no, they call Sarge over and they're like,
Sarge, they've seen your flying disc, you're a whack job,
this kid's a whack job.
Oh, I thought's going on? And then they went out to look for Sandy in the car, and she had run away because she saw something spooky.
And she passed out on Jack Palance.
Yeah.
And then he brings her back to the bar.
And then Martin Landau shoots a cop.
And there's been like 35 minutes of discussion about things.
And then we thought we saw Dusty Rhodes.
It was just a man with big blonde hair.
Yeah.
It was, it would have been pretty sweet if it was Dusty Roads.
And like, and then just about another hour of garbage happens, I would say.
Like that we don't even need to describe.
I mean, I enjoyed the scenes of the bar because I was chewing it hard. Yeah. And I do see, I'm looking
at Alan's notes right here, there, there is just an eye and then a drawing of a heart
and then the words Martin Landau. I really do love him. That's, I just felt like, he, he
served literally no purpose in this movie. What? He was the foil for everything up? He messed everything up. He messed everything up. He didn't need to be there. But the the the the f. He the f. He the f. He the f. He the f. He the f. He the f. He, the f. He, the f. He, the f. He, the f. He, the f. He, the the the the the the the the the the the the foil. He, the the the the the the, the, the, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there. There. There. There. There. there. there. there. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the the the th. th. the, th. th. the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th. I was, the. I was, the. I was, the, the, the bad guy, the aliens were the bad guy.
Like, he didn't need to be there.
He did because he didn't have a makeup budget.
That's true.
Raiden Clark knows how to make a movie.
Yeah, I guess so.
He knows how to get the most out of a book.
I guess so. I mean, so basically, Martin Landau's character is a Vietnam vet.
It's called Sarge, who believes, is really the only person at first to believe in the alien
and these alien creatures.
But you would think that that would make him an ally to our protagonist.
But actually, he believes that the alien has killed them and taken over their bodies and
they are now the alien has killed them and taken over their bodies and that they are now
The alien right and he is like trying to thwart them at every every turn
Right invasion of the body snatcher stuff right exactly which just becomes like very very frustrating at some point because you're like wait you keep waiting for action and every time action is about to happen he like picks them up in a cop car basically. Yeah, there's a lot of a he's definitely. He's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's definitely, he's definitely, he's definitely, he's definitely, he's definitely, the, the, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, th, th, th, the th, the the the the the the the the the the the th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th happen, he like picks them up in a cop car basically.
Yeah, there's a lot of a, he's definitely the red herring for this whole thing.
Yeah.
But he's a red herring with a gun that kills a cop for no reason.
Yeah, yeah.
Although I don't think the cop died because Dusty Rhodes, the other, the EMT, who was also, you better hope you don't die, Sarge. And that was like how that was left. So I think we were supposed to be like, well, Sarge didn't really kill a
thought.
I look that you just combine like two or three people to the Dusty Roads character.
That doesn't matter. They were extras.
So yeah, then there's some more running in the woods with Greg and Sandy, they find an abandoned house and... Well this is after though, one of my least favorite horror movie troops that shows up
in this movie, which is that Jack Palance takes Greg and Sandy back to the shack to look
at the corpses because he's like, oh we need to go back and look at them because the cops
will never believe us, they'll think where's crazy as Sarge, which is like, you can't just go to the police and say, hey, we found this shack with all these bodies in it. You should
probably come check it out. And cops aren't going to be like, are they're going to be like, oh,
that's crazy talk. We're never going to go look at that. Because like, What are you going to do, Jack Pallons. I think you missed the subtext. Well, Jack Pallis didn't really care about the cops or not. He was hunting the hunter.
That was his whole thing. He was hunting. But he was then going to use these kids as bait.
Sure, he was going to do what he needed to do to kill he was the one who believed he just didn't, wasn't a crazy person and wasn't
yelling about it like Martin Landau. This shit is a roller coaster. Because he, he, so he was
collecting the, uh, the flying discs and he had one in the formaldehyde and he-
That was the first one he got though, when he got it off that. But he had the scar on his arm from where one had attacked him before. I thought he was th. the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. He th. He th. He th. He was th. He was th. He was th. He was th. He was th. He was thi. He was thi. He was th. He was th. He was th. He was thi. He was thi. He was thi. He was a s. He was a s. He was a s. He was a s. He was. He was. He was. He was a s. He was a s. He was a s. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He was a th. He was a th. He was a s. He was a s. He was a s. He was a s. S. S. S. S. S. S. He was a s. S. S. S. S. S. He was a th. S. S. S. S. S. S were so confused by it. You also told me it was his vagina. No, I told you it was his arm gina. I thought,
I thought he was his arm gina. I didn't hear what he said. And I said what did he say and you
said that's his arm gina and then he didn't explain it any shack. All right, well, I miss that.
And then Jack Palance gets hit with a flying disc and goes down and the kids take off running
and that's when they find this.
Because they're shitheads too.
Also, not good friends.
We keep saying their kids.
They are in their 30s.
Sure. But they were to the abandoned house, they put on some flannel shirts, Sandy finds a music
box. She weeps incoherently on and off. Yeah.
Takes her braids out.
She's wearing a wig. She's wearing a wig. She's wearing a wig through most of this movie.
She takes her braids out, she tries to take a nap, but has a nightmare.
Greg's drinking coffee to stay awake because coffee is...
It's magic. I was gonna say meth. You said magic.
So she takes a nap, wakes up, goes out and... Oh Greg's falling asleep in a chair. So she's got to go wake... Oh my god, Greg's got's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he. She's he. She's he. She's he. She's he- he's he- he's he- he's hea. She's he- he's hea. hea. She's he- He's he- he's he- he's he- he's hea. hea. She's to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. She's th. She's th. She's th. She's th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. ttri-hea. tri-hea' tri-hea' tri-hea' tri-hea' thi thi thi thi thi thi th oh, Greg's falling asleep in a chair. So she's got to go wake, oh my God, Greg's got an alien on his face.
Greg's dead.
And then, in the scene, it's pulsating.
I'm doing it with my hand again.
It's pulsating.
And I, I thought this was a face and then turns around and there's a giant blue alien standing behind her going, ma'am, and pointing his finger at her, and Katie just starts laughing
and calls him...
I thought it looked like a McDonald land character.
I like, I thought it kind of, kind of, I thought it kind of suffered from that
thing where something's really scary until you see it, because it had a big blue face and I was like,
oh, where the fucks hamburger?
Like, it looked like a McDonald land character.
It really did.
And it was like pointing at her and had like gougly eyes.
But in the grand scheme of movie aliens that I've seen,
it was pretty good once you got to see it.
I though the sculpt was really nice on it. I don't know.
It was really fast too.
You just saw it for a second and it was,
I thought it looked like a McDonald-in character.
Sure.
Where are the fry kids?
I'm like, that's all I want to know.
Mayor McChee's.
Yeah.
So yeah. And then there's more running that ensues. Greg's dead, unfortunately. Yeah, fortunately, who's the same?
Jack Palant saves Sandy.
They start hunting the alien.
He gets dynamite to blow up the shack where the alien keeps his.
But the bodies, yeah.
But then later, I thought when they showed the alien outside the shack,
it was really tall.
And I felt that they did a really nice job of keeping keeping keeping keeping keeping they did a really nice job of keeping it like sort of obscured by smoke and doing like
Earth's fog I guess and doing like long shots of it where it stayed scary.
Right. It was just that one shot of it like in a room pointing with a blue face where I was like this silly silly thing. Kevin Hall was like seven feet tall. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, it was I thought I thought the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the long. I the one. I the one. I th. the one. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. the. th., I thought, I thought the long shots of it were good. I just thought that one quick close up.
Oh, I didn't mind it.
I was digging it.
I was digging it.
Oh, did you notice the, uh, the, the owl noise that, like, is it in every movie
that needs an owl noise?
I did not get it. I wrote down it, it's the, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, to, the, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, I, I, I, I, I was, I, I, I was, I, I, I was, I was, I was, I was, I, I was, I was, I was, I was, I was, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, the, the, the, the, the, to. to. to. to. to. to. too, to. to. too, to. to. to. to. to. to, to, to, to, to, to, to, the, I did notice that right before the alien was blown up in the shack explosion, it
made an elephant sound, like just like a clip sound, like a clip art version of an elephant
sound.
It was really weird. Why? Why would it make that sound? I don't know. I'm sure Grain Clark was like,
we need a noise in, make it make a noise. They were like, what do we have? What do we have?
We have an elephant?
Get that in there.
Like they had an elephant just on the side.
That's why they didn't have to, that's what they did with the money they saved on Martin
Landell's makeup.
They bought an elephant. Jack Palance or Martin Landau shows up and fucks things up again. Oh God, he's the worst. Like, ugh.
It wasn't because he kept thwarting our characters.
It was because he kept thwarting the movie.
Like, I'm like, something sweet's going to happen.
And he was like, no, oh, not what's going to happen?
Like, I don't know.
I enjoyed every second he was on the screen. I love that dude. Yeah, I guess. He's still alive.
This podcast is now about people who are either are or are not alive.
It's the Abe Fagoda alive or dead of podcast.
Is Ape Fagoda dead?
He's dead.
No, he's still alive.
He looks a lot like my Uncle Frank, who is dead.
Rest in peace. So Martin Landau eventually eats it. The alien throws a bunch of discs on him and he dies staring at the alien.
Yeah.
And then Jack.
He sacrificed himself.
Oh, no, no, I'm sorry.
Sacrific himself.
And then Jack Bounce gets the idea to sacrifice himself to get himself over to the shack.
The alien into it.
And then Sandy eventually blows up skills throughout the entire movie, learn, like, it...
Yeah, she knew how to rig a plungeor.
A plungeer for dynamite, yeah, of course she did.
She just looked at it and was like, oh, this wire goes here and this wire goes here and
this way I've seen enough, you know, roadrunner cartoons.
Sure, sure. Sure, sure. And that's how the movie the movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie the movie th. Yeah.
It was a nice, I thought it was a nice final scene.
Yeah, I thought the special effects were really good in this movie.
Yeah, no, I agree.
I really, I can't overstate, when I saw the trailer, I was like,
when I saw the in the movie,
I was like, oh, these are excellent.
They're really gross.
When they were cut open, there was legitimate gross outfact.
I had to like look away.
Because I kept thinking about eating like,
eating clams or muscles when you pull out like the goal,
part and it's like all gross and gummy. That's what the inside, th is the inside, the inside, the inside, the inside, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, th, th, the, th, th.... th. It's, th. It's, th. T, th. I thought it was really cool. Yeah, I thought they were really well,
they were ahead of their time.
I mean, I'm sure this movie was not made
for much more than a million dollars.
And I bet we can find out on the internet.
I've seen a few that he makes. Whoa, do you want to know how much this movie was made for?
Yes, how much was this movie made for?
Why don't you take a guess, actually?
I said a million dollars.
You said a million dollars.
Is that, that's your actual guess?
This picture was made for $150,000.
Fuck yeah.
Of which, and was filmed in three weeks. What? And, uh, come on. You've got to give this,
this movie some credit. No, I absolutely, I said it was a roller coaster. I like roller
coasters, roller coasters are fun. Who did the special effects? Oh, right. I think it's somebody
who went on to be famous. Special effects by Joe Quinlevin. He also worked on, ah, face-off?
John to Rollton, Nicholas Cage, interview with a vampire, tombstone, pro, city of angels.
Okay, so not super famous.
Robocop 2. Oh, wow.
Young Guns. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Oh nice. Favorite of Mike Bolum. Yeah. This was his
first special effects film actually. Oh okay. Yeah, you did a great job. Yeah, great job.
Yeah, great job. Wow, that's also a great in Clark movie. Wow, you need to just marry this guy.
you love him so much. Is he dead? No, he's not No he's not. He's still alive. Yeah. Oh God. This movie also had the director of cinematography was Dean Kundee who went on to...
Oh, the tunn Kundi! He went on to work on the early John Carpenter movies, like The Thing and
the Thing and Halloween and those those movies. And then I think he went on to work on like Titanic and stuff like.
I was about to say that this is the third episode in which we will reference
the Thing and then I looked over when you're wearing the Thing t-t-shirt.
Close in the Dark.
Oh and that concludes this episode of our The Thing podcast. Thank you for listening. As soon as they make a better horror movie. To go with our numeric rating system,
if you were going to rate this film,
keep in mind that you gave Warlock a five.
Oh, man.
Where would you put without warning?
It's so hard because I feel like I'm more likely to watch Warlock again because it was funnier. Okay. But this was a
I mean a better movie. Give it give it the Katie rating. I'm not prepared for
this. It's like I didn't know this was going to happen. It's like I didn't know I was
coming here. Well I would say that I would I would give this a strong eight.
Whoa. You're saying there's only between this imperfection,
there are only two notches.
This was great.
This just, I think Shout Factory just put this out on DVD
and I'm thinking about picking it up.
I really enjoyed it.
I can't, I cannot match your enthusiasm for this movie.
Because there were just so many periods where I was just like, something has to happen soon. Something has to happen soon. Maybe I'm just tired.
I was up really late last night watching pro wrestling.
And I just felt like, and I also felt like some of that
was more subtly acted than some of this ones.
I feel like I was raised on the movies for this era
to get into like the, all right.
We've got budget for the end and the middle of it we're just going to drag that son of bitch out. I'm just going to get some dialogue and there's a lot of dialogue.
But when you have Martin Landau and Jack Palance to dialogue it up man, they...
I know, but I feel like I've seen every movie they're just dialoguing.
They're just dialogue.
It was a hundred and seventy two move movie.
Yeah. Just slightly more watchable. Yeah. I would
I would highly recommend that the people who are fans of you know lower rung, hard sci-fi
movies definitely check this out. Especially if you have a stomach for gross.
Yeah, it's definitely gross out ketchup and mustard violence. Yeah, if you have a stomach for gross. Yeah, it's definitely gross. Gross out ketchup and mustard violence.
Yeah, if you like condiments as, um, it's violence.
Condiments as violence, this is definitely for you.
This is the movie for you.
Yeah, so yeah, I think that's about all I have to say about without warning.

that's definitely staying in. Oh, one point Katie yelled at the movie, Come on Sandy, use
your legs.
Her legs just stopped working at some point, which I...
She was scared.
Come on, Sandy, use your legs.
Leave poor Sandy alone.
Oh, you know, I don't know.
